"very good 3 star, great staff"

RP-Netherlands, Wemeldinge, The Netherlands 23/09/2020

We booked for one night, a stopover on our trip to Italy. The receptionist was friendly and professional. We got the key to our room across the road. When we entered the room, it looked fine but there was a bad smell in the room. We didn't bring the luggage into the room but went back to the recption and told the receptionist about the smell. She immediately gave us a room in the main building which was perfect. We went out for dinner to a restaurant but that had closed due to Covid. So we came back to our hotel and had our dinner there. Even though we had not reserved we got seated straight away. The waiter was very friendly and attentive and the food was much better than we expected. Altogether a very positive experience. I would not hesitate to stay at this hotel again.

"Excellent food and service"

User 12/04/2020

The daily menu dinner menu provides wonderful food, drink and the service is superb. The menu not only changes every day, but in an average of eight visits a year for the past seven years, I can't recall eating the same dish twice.

"Great food at value for money with excellent service"

trevorw535, maidenhead, United Kingdom 05/11/2019

The restaurant food quality has been restored. The service was excellent. The gewurtzraminer brand has been changed. It is drier than previously. This is to my taste, but not my wife who prefers it to be sweeter.

"Hotel OK, restaurant below any standards"

Carlo S, Brussels, Belgium 06/08/2019

Whilst accommodation and breakfast were OK, the restaurant annexed to the hotel offered an appalling service for dinner. Apparently, it was extremely difficult to serve a ‘'huge group'' (a dozen people): drinks and food were served in a rather disorderly manner and only some 45 minutes after they were ordered. The meal which had been ordered for a 4-years child was modified (at the chef's will) because '' the kitchen did not have what the parents wanted''. Obviously without bothering to consult the parents themselves. Criticism was received with a good dose of arrogance by the Maitre d'Hôtel.

"The excellent normal service fell short"

trevorw535, maidenhead, United Kingdom 29/07/2019

Whilst my food was excellent, my wife's was not up to the usual high standard My bill was highly inflated and I was advised subsequently by phone that the incorrect restaurant bill had been applied to my bill and that an additional charge was due which I agreed to settle on my return on Friday

"change your chef."

edelgardb_12, veyras 12/06/2019

hotelroom very tiny, not in the mainbuilding, 2floor,no lift.but i habe to say no noise from the street.breakfast would have been ok,if the scambled eggs where real eggs.i complained on the first day, but only on the 4. day we got the real thing.we had booked 4 day's.the first lunch we had the restaurant was husband ordered the sauerkraut( which is the hit for the region, which was overcooked meat, dry ham,but the sauerkraut was good.i had veal kidney's which love.the mustard was to much, very overpowering, not much of a taste our last night we said we try one more time, buuuuut. my husbamd's steak was overcooked,( send back, waiter was angry) the mashed potatoes did not taste at all, think it was instant pastete ,the sauce and meat was a disaster.disgusting food,in a nice place what a disgrace for a cute, quaint little village.change you chef or ......

"Poor stay-over"

pensionado2013, The Hague, The Netherlands 07/05/2019

We had booked a room well in advance, which we got, but it was a very simple room and the shower was the smallest I have ever seen offered in a reasonable hotel to a quest. The quality of the restaurant was mediocre and I am sure that 80% of the diners would not have fitted in our shower. To our surprise we were advised the following morning that we had stayed in a (un-booked) luxury room (or something), which made us wonder what a regular room could have been.

"Not for business and quite few issue"

beuz-7, Dubai, United Arab Emirates 09/01/2019

Would recommend the place for the following reasons: Internet is really bad and unreliable, the heater was not working properly so I was freezing. For me those two points we be enough for me to not come again

"good breakfast, nice indoor pool, clean & comfortable room"

toriab082006, San Francisco, United States 06/01/2019

Our room was comfortable, and the front desk staff was very helpful. However, we had Christmas dinner in the restaurant - our waiter was not friendly, and the prix-fix menu that we had inquired about before our trip was not what was offered. We had a reservation, and were seated in a private room all by ourselves for the first half of our dinner, away from the other diners. The main dining room was not crowded upon our arrival so not sure why they chose to seat in an isolated area.

"The Hotel is very nice, but the worse of the six Hotels that we stayed at during our trp."

Anita H, Maumee, Ohio 30/10/2018

The Hotel itself was very nice and clean, the parking was nice and it was free. However, 1) Te air-condition was not working, the receptionist came to check it out and she told us the unit was working. The unit produced some ever so slightly movement, but it did not produce cool air. Our room never cooled one degree during the time we occupied the room. 2) We were given (double room) that was very, very small. We could barely move around the room and had difficulty finding space for our luggage. 3) The breakfast was fine, but very pricey at $15.50 per person. 4) We ordered a couple of glasses of Red Wine in the lounge/bar area before dinner, but again were disappointed as our red wine was served in very small wine glasses and the wine was ice cold. Red wine should be served at room temperature and in a large glas. 5) The restaurant was also very, very expensive and the food choices were not to our liking and we decided not to eat there and go elsewhere. However, there were no other restaurant close by and we had to survive the night by eating snacks that we had with us.

"Nice hotel with good facilities and most mod cons. Also has friendly staff but was very busy"

colin g, Rainham, United Kingdom 23/09/2018

The hotel is pleasant and has a local theme to it . My reception was friendly enough and all the staff I encountered were likewise friendly. My room was pleasant enough though was quite dark and could have done with some additional lighting. It had a kettle with coffee and tea , was very clean and had a modern bathroom. The hotel pool was on the small size and had towels provided but was nice enough to cool down in. There was also a jacuzzi. The down side of the hotel was that there were , during my stay a number of coach parties, which meant breakfast was an extremely crowded affair . Staff could not keep up with demand due to volume of patrons and insufficient staff for the competing demandsof topping up food buffets and cleaning tables. This meant the breakfast area looked a mess with little food or tables being available

"Bit downhill from previous visits, sas to see."

User 08/09/2018

First of all be sure to visit the restaurant if you're in south Alsace it is excellent. But the hotel has gone downhill in the past few years in my experience. The fridges are hit and miss, it appears that when a fridge dies it is never replaced. I have had 2 rooms with dead fridges in the last three stays. The room this July was not ready until 1630, and no towels were in the room. Calls to the reception were abruptly responded to. Called twice and waited 45 minutes for the towels to be provided. The AC has been changed to a fixed minimum of 23 degrees as of this year. To be clear, a room a 31 degrees with an AC minimum of 23 degrees does not equal a room temperature of 23 degrees or anything close to that. It was sweltering. All of these issues rests solely on management, the staff are wonderful outside of reception calls. I would suggest staying elsewhere until management makes the required changes.

Joanbirmingham2016, Birmingham, United Kingdom 07/08/2018

Had a great visit to this delightful hotel and enjoyed its outstanding restaurant. Service from Marcello was 5*. Perfectly situated for business in Basle or visiting Alsace, and yet is in a quiet village with charming people. On street parking as well as locked up area behind hotel. Rooms have kettle which is rare in France.

"Nicely appointed hotel in a quiet location"

rotiel321, Somerset, United Kingdom 02/08/2018

Situated in a quiet suburb, this 'homely' hotel is welcoming, comfortable and a pleasant place to stay. Wonderfully situated, right on the Swiss / German borders - excellent road network to hasten you on your way ! We ate in the restaurant and the meal was good - nicely prepared local produce. If you want a pleasant overnight stopover, then the Cheval Blanc is highly recommended.

"very nice country hotel"

gadmodai, Tel Aviv, Israel 10/06/2018

a small country hotel, swiss style. stayed 5 nights, had very nice time. rooms clean and modern, although quite small. staff friendly, spa and swimming pool in basement. wondeful buffet breakfast. very good location for alsace lorraine wine route, as it is situated in the southern end of the route. all the beautiful towns, villages and castles in easy reach, at a distance of 50-100km. recommended, but obviouly a car is a must.

"A true welcome"

trevorw535, maidenhead, United Kingdom 10/02/2018

On arrival ,the receptionist was most welcoming and I didn't have to give my name. The room was newly refurbished and the bed gave an excellent night's sleep. The welcoming bottle of cremant was an advance on the usual pre-dinner glass.

"Nice Hotel, Great Eperience"

Edgar S, Hong Kong, China 06/02/2018

Upon arrival, we were both prompt and courteous checked in to our room. The room although small, but the good interior (just renovated). Nice bedding, good bathroom, and excellent strong free Wifi. Used their jacuzzi and pool in the basement. Might be small but nicely done and good for a swim or just to relax. Had lunch and dinner in their restaurant. Lunch was fine, but the waiter who served us a bit overpowering, be an individual knowing it all. During the dinner, we had an excellent meal and our table has been serviced by Ms. Binta, a wonderful young lady, very kind, professional and understands customer needs. On a final note, the breakfast buffet offered is excellent in choice and quality as well the wonderful service encountered at check out. We recommend the hotel to anyone, centrally located for a wonderful experience.

"Average hotel"

1000traveller1000, Bern, Switzerland 02/01/2018

The staff in the hotel was friendly. Our room was nice and clean. The TV in the room had channels in the languages French, German, Italian and English. The safe didn't work so we had to put our valuables to the hotel safe at the reception desk. The hotel's restaurant has excellent meals. But, it's open for passengers, too. When we had breakfast (between 7:30-8:30 am), some other people (5 retired man, we think they were from the village) were very loud all the time, laughing and so on. But the hotel's boss didn't say anything. That was really disturbing. The hotel has a wellness area, but it's rather old and in the basement rooms (no windows). The light didn't work correctly at first. The swimming pool was nice, but the light in the Sauna and in the Turkish bath wasn't bright enough, it was nearly dark in it. In one of the showers, the water didn't drain off correctly (10 cm deep). The whirlpool was nice, and warm (about 38°), but the air pressed in it (for whirling) was cold, so after using the whirlpool for 10 minutes, the temperature was going down (to about 30°).

"Awful smell in the room"

linnguin, St. Louis 03/09/2017

We arrived late on Thursday evening and noticed a weird smell to the room (room no. 250). It smelt like sewage so we aired out the room over night and during the next day. When we arrived back, it still smelt like sewage so we called the front desk. They said they would send someone up to look at it. I also asked for a different room but they said they were booked and couldn't move us. We waited and waited for someone to come look at it. Finally we went downstairs to remind them. They merely febreezed the room. After dinner the room smelt just as bad as before. The next morning we packed our bags and checked out early. No apology from the front desk staff or a discount on our room price. On Friday evening we stoped by the restaurant at 18.00 to see if they had room for two people at 19.30. They said no prob. When we arrived at 19.20 for dinner, another person told us that there wasn't any room. We would have to wait for 1.5 hours. They could have called our room to let us know they made a mistake. I stead they choose to ignore it. I'm a positive note, we went to Wittenheim and had dinner at a cute restaurant with delicious food (Le Boreal). Avoid this hotel if at all possible!

"Nice place to stay"

Mayya V, Moscow, Russia 24/07/2017

We are thankful for the staff who was very helpful and nice! The hotel is in a good location and condition, indeed, the room was too small to fit 2 people and 3 suitcases, basically, it was a bed and no room at all. Thankfully, we were able to change it for a bigger room. Unfortunately, the conditioner was leaking and the locker did not work. The rest was good.

Zwickert F, Directeur général at Best Western Au Cheval Blanc Mulhouse Nord, responded to this review
Dear Mayya, thank you for your message and see you soon in Elsass. Sincerely

"Cosy hotel near Mulhouse"

Margot V, Aalst, Belgium 13/04/2017

Good midrange hotel, ideally situated in a quiet town but only 10 minutes driving to Mulhouse and also near interesting places to visit in the Elsace area. The staff are very friendly and the food they offer in the restaurant is of good quality. Be prepared for large portions! They also have a spa area with indoor pool, sauna, hammam and jacuzzi- which is a nice addition. Pool water could be slightly warmer but was enjoyable nevertheless.

Zwickert F, Directeur général at Best Western Au Cheval Blanc Mulhouse Nord, responded to this review

"Decent stay with security issues"

Marie G, Hastings, United Kingdom 03/01/2017

We stayed here on our way to Italy. The hotel is a minute or two's drive from motorway and has secure parking at the back of hotel. We were allocated a room in the annex across the road and although we were a little disappointed it didn't matter that much, however, when we opened the room there was a man on our bed. He was just as surprised as we were and very quickly he packed his stuff up and left for his own room which was two doors down the hallway. When we told the receptionist she just said that he'd been to see her and that it was all sorted. No apology or offer of a refresh clean of our room and no explanation as to how his key opened our door!!!! Bit of a security issue there I think. Anyway, we ate at the restaurant which was very busy. The food was good at a decent price. I wish that someone would have put a little character into the decoration of the place though, it looks like a really dreary 1970s hotel restaurant. We didn't eat breakfast at the hotel but went a few doors down the street and bought really yummy croissants from the bakery. If they sorted out the key issue I would recommend this hotel for a stop over.

"Nice hotel for a overnight"

LuckySleven77, St. Gallen 23/12/2016

The staff at the reception was really friendly. The room was quite big, equipped with all needed accessories. The bed was not queen, but two single pushed together. I would appreciate for a queen size bed without canyon between Wifi is quite fast, enough for the standard needs. Parking is closed during the night time, which I liked! Breakfast and SPA havent been used from us -> no coment

"End of Holiday Stop"

Laurent091, Paris, France 20/09/2016

Stayed here on our way back to Paris from Northern Italy. I knew the hotel restaurant due to a recent business trip in the region. Good price quality the room (exec) was fine with a comfortable mattress and ample space (not enormous though). The staff very friendly the restaurant very good quality (especially the choucroute). We also found breakfast was also very good although a bit pricey. Would definitely return.

"Gastronomic in-between"

Leon W, Vionnaz, Switzerland 11/09/2016

Cheval Blanc Hotel is the ideal in-between South and North, East and West travels when you want to discover the Elzas and wine hopping. Hotel has plenty rooms, neat and clean at a decent price. On top, you don't have to look for a gastronomic dinner as their restaurant is top. Many dishes with good Elzas wine, not only limited only to the Elzas. The menu card is satisfying all seasons desire. Service is professional and friendly. We are going to this hotel and restaurant already more than 5 years, sometimes 2 times a year. We love sightseeing in Colmar, Strasbourg or any other little village of the Elzas on search for a good Riesling.

"We'll be back!"

AES132, Zurich, Switzerland 17/05/2016

We stayed for 1 night on our return journey home. The hotel is ideally situated within 1 mile of the motorway. Our accommodation was located in the building opposite the main entrance across the road. The reception staff was very friendly. The village is quiet and there was no noise through the night. The room was clean and comfortable. We enjoyed the dinner in the restaurant. (Local specialties). Another plus point is the gated parking behind the main building. We found it perfect for our requirements and will definitely stay there again.

"Read the 2015 reviews only of this great stopover hotel."

RussellH, Warfield,Berkshire 30/09/2015

We used this very pleasant little hotel twice for one night at each end of a road trip from the uk to Italy and back this September. The hotel is located in a pretty little and very quiet village. The beauty is that it is only 3 minutes from the motorway so easy to get to. It makes a great transit hotel for all. I doubt you would use this as your destination hotel unless you were on holiday in the Alsace region. So what do you need to know? Well first of all check out the pics on this site. They appear accurate and will tell you most of what you need to know. The rooms have been fully refurbished fairly recently and are in very good condition, immaculately clean and comfortable. We got a great sleep in this quiet hotel and village. What the photos can't show you is that the hotel is two buildings accross the road from each other. We had the second grade up of room and were in the main building both times, great for the bar and restaurant. I had read reviews that the staff were multi-lingual and we found the reception staff had exceptional language skills and witnessed two of them speaking English, French and German. The restaurant staff are a mixed bag with differing ability but we had no issues at all. We used the restaurant on both nights, nowhere else to go, and were pleased. We got a menu in English the first night, in French the second. Could have asked for the English but it was more fun to translate. We really enjoyed every dish we had, they were really good. The fillet steak with pepper sauce was better than most gastropub fare from the uk. The wine list was vast and fairly well priced, local and wines from all over France. We had two fantastic wines. So price, two people, two courses, 1 bottle of wine, bottled water and two glasses of cremant cost €135 so around £100. Not cheap but we felt OK for the quality. Breakfast is adequate with a fairly limited choice. You won't go hungry but I've had better in most places. Mostly continental fare. The coffee was from a machine but really good indeed. Price for two €29 so around £11 each. A bit steep to be honest. Given the room price of £70 I think overall good value. The wifi was adequate and worked in both rooms well although I had to log on every time I wanted the web as it seemed to auto logout. We didn't use the pool and hot tub so can't comment but it's included in the price of your room. There is masses of parking behind both buildings and some in front of the smaller one so you won't struggle to find a space. If I take this route to Italy again I will not hesitate to book in here again. Last little tips. Celebrate with a glass Or two of cremant from the bar. (Regional sparkling wine often better than many branded champagnes) it was €7 a glass half what you pay in the uk. There is a good pharmacy right accross the road and a cash point that has multi language instructions two minutes walk up the road. Thanks for reading.

"just average"

yusuf66552, Port Elizabeth, South Africa 21/09/2015

stayed here for 2 weeks on business Rooms are good and clean but small. The bed is excellent restaurant is excellent for dinner but poor for breakfast. WIFI is terrible. Laundry takes almost a week so you might depart without your clothes.

"Charming Hotel"

scotty129, Lincolnshire, England 11/09/2015

Very pretty hotel in 2 buildings opposite each other. Village is extremely quiet - absolutely nothing else there other than houses. Therefore no eating choice. We didn't enjoy the evening food, so it's a case of having to drive to eat. Room was exceptionally clean and very comfortable. The staff were friendly and hospitable. We really enjoyed the (small) indoor pool/sauna/steam room. A lovely place for a stop off.

"Great Stop-over Hotel Near Mulhouse"

dobbo47, Morpeth 15/12/2014

We have used this hotel frequently en route to Italy and it is very conveniently situated about 20 minutes from the Swiss border. It is family owned and managed and most of the staff and management speak good English. It is very close to the motorway but Satnav is useful for getting the quickest route as there are a few twists and turns. It is good value and we paid €69 for a double and the rooms are clean, pleasant and functional. The restaurant is very good indeed and specialises in Alsace cooking. The mid-priced menu was €36 and the food was fantastic. Alsatian wines are not cheap but it's well worth going local and splashing out; you don't need to go to the very expensive end of the list to have a very, very nice Riesling. A much under appreciated grape especially by those of us who started drinking wine in the 1970s! The staff are very friendly and although this part of France is a bit more expensive than the northern and central Logis hotels this is a great place to stay as well as a convenient location.

"Nice hotel but not modern"

Zoe D, London, United Kingdom 24/11/2014

I stayed in this hotel for work and from the outside it is lovely. The rooms are slightly older fashion but it is clean and has everything you need. The restaurant had good food. The hotel booked me a taxi for the airport and this was on time. Just beware that a taxi is EUR70 from the hotel to the airport. I was checking out at 4.30am so there was unfortunately no one who spoke English or who could work the computer so I had to leave and phone later to pay my bill.
