Best Western Plus Island Palms Hotel & Marina

This is such a gorgeous location. There's palm trees everywhere and a very nice restaurant for breakfast lunch and dinner. Both pools are very nice and clean but the one near the restaurant is especially nice because of the surrounding trees that provide some shade. There are good views on both sides of the hotel and the rooms are kept immaculate. Danny Cozart, the guest services director, took very good care of us during our stay! I highly recommend this hotel :)

We frequently visit San Diego to spend time with family, and Best Western Plus Island Palms is in an ideal location because of the nearby activities and fishing pier. Our first stay a few months ago was acceptable, despite the outdated rooms. The staff was friendly, especially the restaurant, so we decided to stay here again. Unfortunately, this visit was much less enjoyable due to the condition of our room. The room was located on the first floor of the Casa Del Mar building with a parking lot directly outside. We did not mind the parking lot, but the overall cleanliness was disappointing. The patio was littered with, chairs dusty and stained, the sink areas were not properly cleaned, and the room appeared to have been only minimally vacuumed. We bought our own disenfecting wipes and tried to wipe everything down. Most concerning, we found a pill left under the table. As parents of a special-needs child who still puts objects in his mouth, this was a serious safety concern. The walls also had red and brown splatters on them, which further suggested that the room had not been thoroughly cleaned. Additionally, while we had the patio door open to let in the bay breeze, a stranger, possibly unhoused, walked onto our patio. The experience was unexpected and unsettling. We also attempted to park near our room for wheelchair accessibility and to keep our vehicle within view. However, the area was closed because of an event scheduled for the following day. It was frustrating that parking was restricted an entire day in advance. After parking in a nearby area with signage indicating restrictions for the following day, a member of the parking/security staff yelled at us not to park there, despite the posted notice suggesting parking was still permitted that day. Fortunately, we spent much of our time with family and away from the hotel. My overall impression is that some hotels in prime waterfront locations rely on their convenience and views rather than maintaining clean, updated accommodations. While the location is excellent and the staff friendly, the cleanliness issues and safety concerns from this stay make it difficult to recommend this property to travelers looking for a comfortable and relaxing hotel experience. We would have rated this one star however the staff was friendly so we added another one.

We went back and forth for weeks trying to find the perfect spot for our family of 5 today stay for a week in San Diego. 3 adults 2 kids. we initially had two hotels booked due to availability and just days before we arrived , we called the hotel itself and got a new reservation for 6 days we now had a King suite which worked out fine with a pull out next to it for our youngest. although the king size bed did not feel like a King , it's seems like a small King if that This hotel was perfect for your family . I was there for a work convention downtown San Diego so it was short drive about 15/17 mins Rooms could use an update for sure. but kitchen( not full ) there is no oven We were very happy. pool and hot tub Breakfast was good for kids. we didn't eat anyning but kids pancakes :) Wouls stay again also laundry room available for $2.50 each load. takes quarters which you can get from Marina

This hotel was perfect for our stay and visit to San Diego. It's not a centrally located hotel so you'll either need to use a car or local transport. We did both as we returned the car half way through and used the local trolley and bus service. It's about a 10/15 minute walk from the bus stop but the service takes you to the Old Town, where you can then connect to Downtown San Diego. We appreciate the laid back, quiet appeal of this hotel. The rooms are spotless and well maintained. We were located in the Marina View Building, with a view over the Marina to the rear of the hotel. Beautiful sunsets on that side. We had 2 spacious queen sized beds, with plenty of room to spread out with 3 suitcases. The balcony is furnished with a table and 2 chairs and makes for a pleasant sit out of an evening. We spent time around the main pool and never had any issues with finding a sun bed. They were super comfy too! The pool is quite deep at one end at approx 8ft so just be mindful with little ones. We had breakfast each morning in the Blue Wave Bar and Grill and would like to do a special shout out to Stacey, who was welcoming, friendly and provided excellent customer service. She even took the time to give us some tips for exploring the local area, which we really appreciated. We also ate twice in the evening and would like to also thank the French gentleman (who was so busy yet always with a smile!) and also Zee, who again took the time to make us feel welcome and ensured we had a fab meal. Try the Key Lime cheesecake - it was sooo good! Also the Tropical Burger, which came with banana and peanut butter. It shouldn't work but it did! I need to see if I can get the recipe to try at home! My biggest thanks go to Vanessa on the front desk. We were on a road trip throughout California for my 40th birthday. I had messaged the hotel in advance and was told I had been allocated a suitable room. Upon check in, I'm really not sure what it was but I suspect the fan in the bathroom, what sounded like a generator and the air con in the hallway together made the room so noisy. I'm a light sleeper so I knew several nights of this would be horrendous. Vanessa persevered with me and managed to allocate the perfect room for our stay. I'm sorry I was a pain in the rear end but appreciate everything you did. Bless her as I'm sure she inwardly groaned every time I approached the desk thereafter for pool towels or to post a card, never showed this though and remained professional throughout. A credit to the hotel. Will certainly stay here again if we ever visit San Diego again. Thank you.

We had a wonderful stay at the Best Western Island Palms, and one of the highlights of our visit was Vanessa A. She was incredibly friendly, professional, and genuinely welcoming from the moment we interacted with her. Vanessa went above and beyond to make sure we had everything we needed and took the time to answer our questions with a smile. Customer service like hers makes a huge difference and really adds to the overall guest experience. The hotel itself was clean, comfortable, and in a fantastic location, but Vanessa's exceptional hospitality is what truly stood out. She is a great asset to the Best Western Island Palms team, and we look forward to returning in the future. Thank you, Vanessa, for helping make our stay so enjoyable!

This hotel would be amazing if it wasn't for the fact that the rooms aren't being maintained. On my first stay I notified the Director of Guest Services of the issues that that room had: termite damage, non-functioning patio door handle, and a damaged toilet. He assured me that they would do better the next time. On our second stay we arrived to a room that must have been in the 90 degree temperature and the fan sounded like it was going to fall off. They "noted the damage" but the fan was never fixed during the 4 days that we stayed there. The room wasn't properly stocked with missing trash bags and only one towel. To top it off the remote didn't work. To compensate for the issue the director thanked me for "the time to share my thoughts." If you'd like to see a video of the fan then go to the Google review since TripAdvisor doesn't allow video uploads.

Very clean, comfortable, located near airport and other attractions. Off the busy beaten path a bit, so that's nice and quiet. Great walking across from pier and waterway. Helpful staff. On-site restaurant/lounge that actually has decent food and prices. Daily specials, too. I loved the wooden shutters as opposed to funky old curtains. Price was great. You do have to pay for parking...but it also means nobody is using the private lot to access the pier and no hunt for a parking space. Each room has a private access patio with cushioned chairs. Bird watching is great there. Nice place.

I left something in the hotel room. I called the hotel and have not received a call back. I was a long time Best Western customer, not any more.

Location is great and rooms are big. That's where it ends. The rooms are old and dirty. Furniture is falling apart and filthy. There were several moldy spots in the room and on the hotel grounds. This part is technically for the restaurant but I did deal with hotel staff for the issue. This is literally the stupidest reason to receive a bad review. I went to dinner with my spouse and two children. No rush, not very busy. My entire family's food came before mine, no big deal. (My meal was also the only one that didn't require any cooking) But after nearly thirty minutes, and my entire family finishing their meals, I asked for a manager. Manager came, offered to comp my meal. Comping a meal that was never eaten seemed like the bare minimum to me? Then, for some over dramatic waste of my time I had to wait for the hotel director? A hotel director and another half hour of my time? She also offered to only comp my meal. Which I accepted, as long as her name and corporate number were also provided. Some how I ended up with my entire bill covered, but no name and no corporate name or number. Nor was any employee, at any point, willing to take any kind of accountability or take any blame. Everything felt like a placation. Which is silly because at no point was I angry or loud. But they screwed up and were very unwilling to do anything to right their own mistake. Unfortunately this one staff interaction completely changed my opinion of this hotel. It should also be said, ask questions about the menu. Especially if you're picky. The kids menu says "Kraft macaroni and cheese", it's not Kraft. It's cavatapi noodles with cheese sauce. It also says "french fries" and it's waffle fries. Kids are picky. Especially about macaroni and their French fries. This miscommunication could ruin a family vacation. Also, the "avocado salsa" is creama. Not salsa. So mind your allergies because the menu describes almost everything incorrectly.

Objectively this resort deserves 4 stars, but the positive vibes and friendly service elevate it to a 5 star rating in my book. I stayed in the Casa Del Mar building, which badly needs a refresh - the rooms have that worn-in “beachy” smell, and the furniture, countertops, and appliances all look at least 25 years old. But if you're in your 30s like I am, there's something nostalgic about that throwback, beach house rental feel. The rooms, while dated, are spacious and very clean, and offer beautiful views of the harbor or marina depending on what side you're on. The food and service at the on-site restaurant, Blue Wave Bar & Grill, are excellent, and the restaurant is nicely elevated to overlook both the marina and the secluded pool and jacuzzi area. Other nice restaurants, like Ketch, are just a 10 minute walk or short drive away. And there is ample parking. In sum, the Best Western Island Palm needs an update to stay competitive, but it's still a great choice for a chill couples weekend getaway or even a weeklong stay with the kids.

We were so very happy with our accommodations here at the Island Palms! At check-in, Monica was so friendly, fast and efficient. The entire Front Desk staff were very courteous and friendly. Jaime, Jackie, Stacy, Clinton and especially Danny. The restaurant was always consistently fast, friendly and delicious! The clam Chowder was excellent, and the table side Guacamole was the best we ever had. The restaurant staff was so wonderful! Jose, Robin and Chance are great employees in the restaurant. We can see why many of the staff have been in their positions for so many years. Such a breath of fresh air to have so many happy and friendly employees, that comes from good management. We highly recommend this hotel for a great get away, small or large family vacation, or the ever-popular Staycation...

Location is great , blue wave restaurant on site delicious and many restaurants within walking distance. Rooms are hit or miss, been staying since the late 60's. Unfortunately our last experience of 7 nights was not good in the original building. Sewer gas smell in shower, broken ceiling fan, carpet needs cleaning, bed had seen better days as well as linens. For over 275.00+ a night with all the taxes not exceptable. Simon from maintenance was responsive to issues but could not correct them all. Good beautiful

Incredible location. Beautiful grounds…easy get to and from. We were pleased when we initially checked in, but then after the first couple of nights, we began to see the flaws. *no in room coffee maker…there is one in the lobby, but when I walked up to get coffee, the machine had an error message…no one with knowledge there to fix it. *door to room is not sealed and due to rain, the carpet around the door is slightly wet. *gutters need to be repaired…plenty of places where they were leaking (some spots pretty bad) *beds were not comfortable and are in need of replacement. *$25 a night to park? Cmon…this place isn't that busy. Parking should be included. Would we stay here again? Absolutely…it is a wonderful spot. However, I hope hotel management makes some needed fixes to this hotel that could be an absolute gem.

The absolute most overrated hotel I've ever witnessed. It had 4.5 out of 5 rating and it should be .5, and that's probably too high. The room pictures must be from a long time ago. Beyond mad. I'm calling Best Western tomorrow and letting them know that I will no longer be staying in their overrated hotels. What's with the no coffee in the rooms? How cheap can you be? I'm going to demand money back; 4.5 rating is false. This hotel has nothing on Motel 6. I walk in the room and almost trip over the bed. Literally the door was about 4 inches from the bed. Spartan furnishings and cheap. Looks like they put anything in there. Nightstand was far below the bed. Furniture was old. You would think if a hotel doesn't have in room coffee, that they would make some available in the lobby early in the morning. Not this hotel; 6:30AM is when coffee is available in the lobby.

Location was great. Lowkey if you're there to relax. Enjoyed my walks around the area and loved that I didn't have to leave.

I really had to think about this rating for awhile. I don't give 5-star ratings often. That said, they hit on literally everything, aside from the most minor of details. Let's dive a little further. A very pleasant check in. Layout is six buildings, front desk is second building from north to south. I was at the south end of the property, a bit of a hike with three bags. I made it work, though. It is a risk you take. I was given a very nice room that was well-kept, clean, safe, and one with a beautiful view! I could not find anything wrong with the room the entire time I stayed. Props. No shortage of entertainment and amenities within this resort. TWO pools, TWO hot tubs, a fitness center, a spa, tennis courts, and pickleball courts. Not to mention access points to multiple marinas (note that they are private) are also on the property. Grace Beach within walking distance. Busses with connections to other transit located just over a mile away, which I walked to and from daily without issue. The only thing wrong I found, the main pool area was lacking towels. That said, the pleasant weather worked in my favor, and allowed for some extra outside time. I did not dock points as a result of this. San Diego is a great city! And this resort is a great resort! I certainly will return the next time I am out there.

We got a discount room through Expedia and the bathroom was not very clean, only one washcloth, no coffee maker. No breakfast included though we did have a pretty good breakfast in the restaurant.

Island Palms is a magical resort set between the marina and San Diego Harbor. Walked along the paths every morning Loved sipping wine on the our patio while watching the seagulls, pelicans, and seals. Enjoyed breakfast on the Blu Wave deck everyday, and treated local friends to Island Palms Valentine's dinner and bought Valentine's bouquets at their farmer's market. Perfect place to spend Valentine's Day, or any day with a loved one.

It's a nice hotel located near the water in a nice area of town. The staff were always friendly and helpful. The room was clean and well taken care of. The restaurant on site served wonderful food. We had breakfast and dinner there. I was disappointed that they did not have a coffeemaker in the room, and guests could not access the coffeemaker in the lounge until 7:00 am. Our room was not an accessible room, but still felt a comfort height toilet would have been a welcome change.

Beautiful location with Bay and Marina views of boats and yachts and people paddle boarding. Dog friendly. Shelter island has so many restaurants and Humphreys has many concerts throughout the year. Walking distance for so many places

We just finished up a six-night stay at this lovely property. I highly recommend it for people who want a great location for dining out and for just soaking up the beauty of the water. It's also a great place for kids and families The hotel is reasonably priced and has great customer service, especially from the front desk and from Danny and the crew.

Wonderful upgrade to the second floor with a view of the inner harbor. Wonderful!! Only down check was the lack of a coffee maker in the room. It would have been nice if they made that change clear when we checked in and offered to loan us one. The closest coffee was in the main lobby as the others closer to our room we have used in the past were "out of order." Even the lobby coffee maker didn't come on until 7am. Big down check.

My husband and I spent 8 nights at the Island Palms for our anniversary. This is a large hotel with two saltwater pools and hot tubs. We picked this hotel because of its location. Our room looked out at a public park and pier. Each morning, I would walk out the door and across the street and join a real community of people, running, walking dogs, strolling. The marina side of the hotel, had a beautiful mile long walk along 3 marinas. All of the staff were friendly and responsive. Because we were on a budget, we chose the less expensive room option. The rooms are small. Get a suite if you can. Rooms with balconies (non-suite) were the same size as ours and the metal chairs didn't look comfortable. There are plenty of places to sit outside. The rooms and balconies in the older portion of the hotel looked a bit more comfortable. That said, we loved the place. 20 minutes from everywhere we wanted to go and beautiful views in all directions. While we loved the location, the Naval base on Coronado Island could be quite loud at times, but never at night. We lived watching the huge navel ships go by. We will stay here again.

Being a member of Best Western Rewards I used the app and found the Island Palm. I would have given this establishment a “ 5 “ rating had it not been for one poorly thought out service delivered with No thought to the Guest but rather how to ring up a few xtra dollars. Our location was beautiful. Our room was terrific. Vaulted ceiling, Plantion Shutter over looking the marina. Typical amenities you look for. Refrigerator & Microwave but No coffee maker which I thought was unusual. In all an excellent room. However, we ordered from the door hanging card that's offered for morning room service. This was not what I was lead to believe and should be spelled out on the card as your filling out your order. When delivered to my room in a plastic grocery bag. A plastic bag handed to me with a carton inside. Some plastic utensils salt & pepper. For what I got and what they delivered I would have thought they would have at least sent along some paper plates. Imagine trying to eat 2 eggs over easy from the bottom of a cardboard carton.

Checked in this afternoon. King room, Marina view. The room is clean but smells horrible! Musty, old and damp. Will not stay here again!

We have stayed in Island Palms / BW many times (Five in just the 13 months). It is our home away from home in San Diego. Always great service. Super friendly and VERY WELL MANAGED! One suggestion to management: I enjoy early morning soak/ swim. Can you look at opening up the pools before 8 am? Thank you

Oh, I am soooo excited. I just made reservations for my family's annual NYE trip to our favorite hotel in the world -- Best Western Island Palms. Visiting here over NYE -- closing out one year, beginning the next -- has been an important tradition for our family for a dozen years or so. I was so bummed when we had to miss one year (2020 covid year) but have been so happy to be back there the last four years. And we are excited to go again for 2025/26. This place is the best. It's seriously got one of the best settings (lovely marina view on one side, bay view on the other) of any hotel we have ever been to. The amenities (hot tub, restaurant, workout room, etc) are topnotch. And, most importantly, the staff is so helpful and kind. Everybody there is great, but it's really Danny (at the front desk) who has always gone out of his to make sure my family has everything we need for our stays. I seriously love this hotel.

I'll let the photos speak for themselves.... the only descent things about the hotel is the location and kitchen space. Otherwise the hotel and rooms need significant renovations.

Amazing views, spacious kitchen suite, chill vibes, peaceful. This is our favorite hotel on shelter island if you can get the harbor front suite. We had a grand suite with a private patio and it was the bomb. Loved looking at the boats, sea birds and ducks while having coffee and breakfast every morning. Felt lucky to stay here. Tips: free public overnight parking super close, don't pay the fee. The budget rooms looked cramped and it's 100% worth the upgrade for a good suite in the harbor side. Bayside looks at parking lot. Very close by car to grocery stores, etc. Walking distance to live music club, restaurants, coffee shops. It's a bit dated and we had a few minor nuisances and maintenance things noticed but the room and views more than made up for it. If you haven't stayed on Shelter Island before, definitely check it out. My #1 recommendation to management is to update the noisy air conditioner units.

I wish I could have given this motel a higher review, because I like the Best Western chain and I'm a loyalty club member. However, I need my coffee in the morning. I always check the hotel website before I arrive to make sure the rooms have coffee makers, if not I bring my water boiler and instant. In this case, I was sure they'd have coffee makers in the rooms and, sure enough, the website said they did. So I didn't bother to bring mine. Well, guess what? THEY DON'T! I called at 5:45 p.m. last night from our nice marina view room (138) and told them there was no coffee maker (although there was a microwave and fridge). I was told they took all the coffee makers out of the rooms but "there's coffee available in the lobby.) Are you kidding me? First of all, I look forward every morning to having my first cup while I'm waking up and getting dressed. I want to drink it in my pajamas. I don't want to have to get dressed and walk to the lobby. Secondly, I'm gimpy and use a cane so it's always a hike to me. Thirdly, the website claimed there were coffee makers. After I protested, the clerk told me reluctantly that they could bring me a coffee maker. I told her thanks, we went to dinner and to a concert, and returned at 10:30 p.m. No coffee maker. I called the front desk and was put on hold. For a long time. Finally I just gave up, and my friend told me she'd fetch me coffee in the morning. She did go down to the lobby this morning, and was able to get us cups, but also discovered that they SHUT OFF the coffee at 10 a.m. Seriously. The man in line behind her told her that, the previous day, he'd been able to get a cup at 9:59 am but the poor guy behind him got nothing. Really? Really? Even Motel 6 doesn't shut off their coffee at 10 a.m. And this is a resort area. Finally, the coffee I did get wasn't good. Someone is running this place who hates coffee. It was clearly the cheapest, most bitter brand they could get, maybe not even arabica. When we were walking out, I saw a housekeeper's cart and it had coffee supplies on it. So SOMEONE was getting coffee. Just not us. Sorry for this long rant, but not sorry. I'm so disappointed because otherwise this would have become my go-to motel for the area. And I want to know if this is a thing that Best Western is doing, because if so I won't be staying there anymore. We had to drive to Starbucks afterward to get a decent cup!

Beautiful setting! Clean, modernized rooms. Close to the airport. Quiet and felt safe. Beats any airport hotels I've stayed in nearby, for a good price. Plentiful, free parking across the street.

Have stayed at this hotel many times in the past based on the service and location. We were in town to attend a concert nearby and booked a room in the Casa Marina building due to the location/beautiful views of either the water or marina. Room was not ready when we arrived and since we had no vehicle, had to wait until it was ready. The hotel front desk, main pool and restaurant/bar area were all very busy, indicating a pretty full hotel for that weekend. The room was at the end of a hallway, but was quiet and had beautiful views of the marina area. It was however, very dark, shabby and in need of some updates/repairs. Furniture nicked and worn, the toilet handle in the bathroom was barely hanging on and functioning. I reported it to the front desk and the next day it was repaired. WiFi was good, used the pools and the restaurant for breakfast. Service and food very good at the restaurant, would recommend it. We enjoy walking around the area across the street and taking in the beautiful views and weather. Would recommend this hotel, nothing is perfect, although some attention needs to be paid to the wear and tear of furniture, etc. Would stay again!

We had a beautiful spotless suite by the pool and spa with an amazing view of the marina. Dinner and breakfast at the on site restaurant was perfect and the service was very good. Danny the Director of guest services made sure that our stay was outstanding and the entire staff there was very professional and attentive. I can't wait to go back !

location great, but the room smelled like mildew. had to open windows and balcony the whole time. everything else was fine.

I really don't know where to begin. When I checked in I was informed that there was a $25 parking fee. I informed the clerk that we would park elsewhere and not in the lot so we would not be charged the fee. We went up to the room, which was on the second floor and there are no elevators. The room itself was spacious and comfortable. I went to take a shower. Inside the shower there were 3 bottles of shampoo attached to the wall but no conditioner and no body wash. So that was annoying. Later that evening I went to make up the sofa bed for my son and there was no blanket. So I decided to call the front desk to ask about a blanket and the missing shower items but the phone didn't work. At this point I had to walk over to the front desk to ask for the shower items and blanket. Be aware that the rooms are not in the same building as the front desk. There were no apologies or anything but they gave me the shower items and said they would send someone up with the blanket. This was around 9:15 pm. At 10:00 still no sign of the blanket so I then had to go back down to the desk and now I was really annoyed. Still no apology, I was just told that she was busy bringing things to rooms. Not sure why so many rooms didn't have what was meant to be in the room! About ten minutes later someone finally showed up with the blanket. When I went to check out there was a line at the desk but an option for express check out. By now I was suspicious of this place so I waited in line to check out and asked for a print out. Sure enough, there's the $25 parking fee. When I asked why I was being charged when I explicitly told the clerk at check in that I wasn't using the on site parking I was told that the fee is always added regardless of what the customer says. So I had to wait while the fee was removed. I wonder how many people do the express check out and never notice that fee on their bill? Bottom line, the rooms are nice as is the property but the service is atrocious. I really wouldn't recommend this place, but if you decide to go be aware that there is a free parking lot with tons of spaces directly across the street and check your bill so you can get the parking fee removed! But really why stay someplace so sneaky?!

Everything was excellent, and Danny, the Front Desk Manager, as always, was particularly gracious. The only negative is the fact that they've removed coffee from the individual rooms and provided a coffee machine from 7 AM to 10 AM in the Lobby. How friggin' cheap; corporate profit raises it's ugly head once again!!!

I love staying here for a staycation any time of the year, especially during the Humphreys concert season. I, also, recommend this Hotel to any out of town visitors to San Diego. The location is perfect, close to the airport and many great local restaurants all within walking distance. The rooms are spacious and the Marina view is spectacular. All the staff here are so accomadating. It is quiet and serene. The onsite restaurant and bar is also great. There are two pools and two jacuzzi's and tennis courts. This hotel is a gem and I always look forward to my return.

San Diego Hawaiian style had a great business and leisure stay here at shelter island. Tiki culture enthusiasts will enjoy. Family friendly and boaters abound!

The room was always clean, and they respected my privacy notices. My towels were fresh and white, and the bath area was spotless.

Hotel looks lovely on website but our room wasn't great. The room we were allocated, although big, was dark.... at 4pm in the afternoon! This was because the room was long, with a small patio and a tall hedge covering the view of the car park. This tall hedge blocked a lot of light. We've never asked to change rooms in a hotel before but this was unacceptable, especially as we were staying for 3 nights. The only option given to us was an upgrade costing $25 extra per night. We were put on the 2nd floor, with a view, so this was much better. Bed was clean and comfy. Microwave was provided although no tea/coffee making facilities even though I saw the maids trollies with sugar/creamer etc on them so some rooms had them - I'd already been out and purchased my own cups by then! Not happy! Water pressure in shower was virtually non-existent so spent twice as long as normal in there rinsing out shampoo. Not happy!Furniture was scratched/chipped and the door on bedside cabinet felt like it was going to fall off. Bathroom door needs painting. Walls, skirting boards and main door were badly scuffed. Carpet had been patch repaired. Armchair (pale green) looked grubby were many hands had touched. At least we had a decent view. A well located hotel but judging by the website there are more acceptable rooms available.

We had a wonderful stay in a suite at this hotel. The location was great and we were able to attend a concert nearby. We had a balcony and it was nice to enjoy the beautiful scenery that surrounds this hotel. We ate breakfast at the nearby restaurant. The menu for the breakfast was pretty good.

My husband and I were very pleased with this location. We had a Marina view in the Casa Del Mar building. Our room was very clean and the bed comfortable. Shelter island is quiet and convenient to so many places! We will most definitely be back!

We have been going here for over 20 years. We love the location and price/amenities. The suites are perfect for families or just those that want a bit more room. We prefer the Marina view. The restaurant has always been solid and the grounds are always clean. Easy to get to anywhere in San Diego. It's been our "go to" when visiting family at least once a year for over 2 decades.

This was our third stay at Best Western Island Palms since 2017. It was the third hotel that we stayed at in San Diego on our trip and, although the other hotels we stayed at farther north were great, I kind of wish we had more time at this one. I had requested an early check-in, and I received a phone call at 12:30 p.m. letting me know our room was ready! I don't think that has ever happened to us. :) We stayed in a 3rd floor marina view room in the Casa Marina building that had a balcony with a beautiful view. The room was clean, spacious and well-appointed. The television was HUGE! I absolutely love the toiletries offered at Best Western Hotels. They smell divine! Shelter Island is a beautiful area to walk around and it's also nice and quiet. It was so nice to get up in the morning and walk across the street to the bay to watch the sunrise. I would highly recommend this hotel and hope to stay there again in the future!

Great location for us. We were touring California & San Diego was final stop: 15 minutes from airport Parking no issue Room was great with kitchen and dining table. It was ground floor with a patio where we sat at night with food n drink; could see all the boats , fireworks from seaworld on the distance. Very clean Didn't eat there so can't comment on food.

The best part of this hotel, besides the gorgeous view, is Maria! She is the main hostess for Blue Wave. We came for the first time last year and she remembered our son from then. She made our trip so special last time and even more so this time. Our son even picked her a flower on Mother's Day, as she was soooo kind! She is truly a gift to this beautiful hotel and restaurant. We will continue to stay here annually!! 100% Thank you, Maria!

Older BW property on beautiful Shelter Island. Numerous restaurants nearby so no need to drive once you arrive. 2 pools and hot tubs on property. Blue Wave restaurant serving great food and drinks with a patio overlooking the tranquil marina. Danny and Clinton always welcoming at the front desk.

Beautiful location. Loved sitting on balcony and watching the boats and ocean! Soft beds. Clean, secure. Ac was not working properly. Staff was friendly. Parking was sparse and 25 a night. The restaurant was ok, too overpriced, not that great in our experience.

This hotel exceeded our expectations. If you're looking for a real vacation vibe and a wonderful on-site restaurant without breaking the bank, this is the hotel for you. We only had two nights in San Diego and we were on a tight budget. Our room slept six and unlike some other hotels the pullout bed was actually extremely comfortable. The two pools were lovely and the area around the hotel is absolutely stunning. We loved walking to get coffee at a cute little café along the harbor.

The room size was minuscule - two queen beds barely fit. For our last night of our stay we booked a room closer to the airport at a Motel 6 and it felt like a luxurious upgrade (space-wise). Now I should also mention the things we enjoyed about this hotel: its location in a park-like setting on Shelter Island, cleanliness, the amenities (pool, restaurant on site), and the high quality of the fixtures (bathroom, TV). They had a ridiculously large TV in the room, which was nice but further underscored how crammed the room was. I wish there was more transparency in advertising the various rooms this hotel offers. The broom closet we stayed in should not be priced on par with a quiet room on the other side of the building.

We have stayed at the Island Palms in the past and have been very pleased with the experience. This time, we came to dine at their restaurant, that sits up on a deck, overlooking the marina, the pool, and the hills of Point Loma. It was a 5 Star experience. Our waitress Stacy was so welcoming, and had great customer service and recommendations. Their lunch menu had so many wonderful options and the quality was outstanding! Their $20 Burger and Brew special was amazing…a thick burger, cooked to perfection and a choice of several beers. They also feature the best Pineapple Dole Whip, this side of Hawaii. Can't say enough about this place! We will be back! And hope to do a stay cation here soon!

When looking for a place to stay in San Diego we had stayed near Shelter Island in the past but not on Shelter Island. This hotel had good reviews and the prices were OK and we liked this location. One problem is there are so many types of rooms when looking online and it is unclear on really what view you are going to get. Once there I understood the issue - this place is cobbled together from what must have been two or three different hotels over the years. Some rooms face the parking lot and I can see those being called rooms with a "view" since you might be able to see downtown. There are also rooms that face inner walkways and even a loading dock... So beware when booking. Anyway we opted for a marina view room which was in the main building but with a first floor obstructed view of the marina. It was good enough. The room was a good size with a frig, microwave and coffee maker. The bathroom was large and with the best water pressure of our entire trip in the west. Impressive for California. There are two pools but we used neither. They also have pickleball courts - we didn't use those either. Unlike most Best Westerns breakfast is not included. If you want to save the $25/day parking fee you can park across the street in the beach parking lot. There are no restrictions and the lot is as close as most hotel parking lots. You can unload your luggage and then zip across the street. Easy. Overall a nice place to stay if you can figure out the room selection!

unsafe entry ways in the 400 building and fan in room didn't work the food below standards over priced and cold they had no pool service so towels everywhere glass around the pool dirty jeff at the Bar was outstanding fast friendly helpful I waisted 20000 points I have been a B W R since 2010 anf only one other time have we not been 100% satisfied

We had great service, and everything about this place was as expected and better for the most part. Danny is a front desk manager, and he is extremely likable and proficient at his job. The rates are fair and the restaurant is outstanding. My wife and I stay there regularly and we will the next time also. I may add that you should give Danny a raise, LOL.

This hotel was great! The view of the marina was awesome . The staff were so friendly. We loved the Blue water restaurant at the hotel. The food and service were amazing . We felt safe walking along the walkways by the water.The pools and hot tubs were clean !

I have been staying at this hidden gem for over 20 years. The staff has always been amazing. Especially a standout greeter and concierge, Daniel! , He hea also been working there nearly 20 years himself, maybe longer! Daniel ALWAYS TAKES CARE OF HIS CUSTOMERS!! There are plenty of dining options within walking distance The food at the restaurant on site, "The Blue ×Wave" has really stepped up its menu in the last year. CHECK THEM OUT! 5 SYAR LOCATION!!

The hotel is dingy and very dated. Shelter island is largely industrial. I made an error and booked an extra night, which I cancelled either in person at the front desk when we were leaving or by phone. I guess I did not check that I'd received a cancellation because when my husband got his credit card bill, the second night was on there. I called to explain the mistake and was told essentially to pound sand. We travel a lot and I'll never stay in a Best Western again.

I had picked this hotel for an extra day in San Diego after a cruise mostly for the the pictures it showed of it's location online. We arrived via Uber about 10am and were promptly checked in by Alex and Clinton in the nicest way possible! Our room was ready, which was areal blessing to us, since hubby didn't feel well and needed to rest. We stayed in the Casa Marina building, room 863, which had a beautiful view to the channel (I didn't expect a view at all and it was amazing!). We immediately used the balcony and really enjoyed it. The room was large and well appointed, a bit older in it's appearance, but very clean and comfortable! The property has two pools, a hot tub, exercise room, computers and a restaurant on site. Breakfast is not included in the price, but available at the Blue Wave restaurant (we didn't have breakfast, since we had to be at the airport at 6am). We had dinner that night though at the Blue Wave (see separate review). All staff we had contact with was amazingly nice and I had a question about my bill after we got home and Anette took care of it immediately! Yes, it might be an older property, but would love to stay there again!

This place has a terrific location with plenty of dinner options nearby. It is very close to the airport. We stayed here for 5 days. Their pools are very nice and warm! We had a 2nd floor room that overlooked the harbor. The rooms are very comfortable. The staff was very friendly. I would definitely recommend this place.

Such a nice comfortable hotel. The balcony facing the marina was so roomy and relaxing. Very peaceful. We plan to stay here again and were very impressed. We were only there for one night, so didn't have the opportunity to use the facilities they have, but it was perfect and we will be back for a staycation.

The Best Western Island Palms Hotel was an excellent choice for us. We had lived in San Diego for 20 years, 10 of which was on a boat in a marina on Harbor Island. This hotel was as close to that experience as possible. Our spacious and well equipped room faced the marina, which is a great view for morning coffee. Take a walk around the island. Eat in their pleasant restaurant. The location was great; near everything we wanted to be close to. The bed was very comfortable; the room was spotless. There are lots of plugins for electronics. Huge flat screen tv. In short, we loved our stay here and the next time we need a San Diego fix, we will stay here for sure.

This is easily my favorite hotel in San Diego. The staff is unbelievable and kind, the management is amazing, and every time we visit our experience is better and better. Thank you, Danny for always helping us whenever we are making reservations or have specific requests. If you're visiting San Diego, this is THE place to stay.

This place was nice but a few to many bad sides to this place. The light was flickering in and out. There were weird chips in the blinds and the microwave was broken the whole time. We also had room service come only 1 time during our 4 night stay. Other than that the place was very nice. Just as a tip they charge 25 $ a night to park on property so if you are staying multiple nights or if yiu just want to save 25 $ over 1 night park across the street and the beach free parking. I did that for my 4 night stay and they did let me unload my car on property real quick.

San Diego is our favorite city in the continental U.S. and we come here quite often to enjoy all that the city has to offer. We used to try different hotels. But not anymore. Since we found the Best Western Plus Island Palms and Marina, we have a true "home away from home" in San Diego. We just keep coming here year after year and it never disappoints. There are so many reason why we love the place. But one of the top reasons is the amazingly helpful and cool front desk staff, captained for years by Danny -- a man who goes out of his way to make guests feel welcome. There are also fantastic views on both side of the hotel (one direction is the Bay and San Diego skyline and the other is over the marina and up to Point Loma). And there are sooooo many great restaurants within walking distance here on Shelter Island. We look forward to visiting here every year! Thanks to Danny and the staff for all they do!

Our favorite hotel in San Diego (35-years) has fallen victim to age, poor maintenance and uncaring front desk staff. On a positive note, the longtime maintenance man, "Simon" is still on the job and was the best representative of this hotel! Also, housekeeping was amazingly prompt and accommodating! Things get old, this is an amazing location but mold, mildew and greed have moved in. A renovation is definitely indicated. Higher prices could be charged. Front desk staff need to be fired and customer service-oriented replacements hired. In particular, management needs changed as they are the leadership Stewarts and responsible for the way customers are treated and problems solved. Your customers are able to detect uncaring staff (Jennifer) and lies. I'm so sorry to not be returning to this once favorite hotel twice each year for a week or more.

I believe that these two associates went above and beyond to make us feel most comfortable as possible thank you. Best western for providing Service that exceeded our expectations. My son and I stayed at the hotel for 8 nights, and we throughly enjoyed our stay. We chose the hotel for the tropical theme, and surroundings. We had an Easy check in, there was always friendly/helpful staff. The room was clean and had all the kitchen utensils we would need for cooking (queen suite) we were happy they came in to make beds/freshen towels and sometimes even did our dishes. What a treat! The pool area was always clean. I didnt see anything broken or damaged. The property was huge. And I enjoyed walking around in the safety of the compound. The restaurant staff was lovely and attentive. We enjoyed every minute of our stay at this beautiful property.and wouldn't hesitate to stay again.

My family has been coming here for 26 years. I have been recommending this amazing place to everyone!!! The location is like paradise. But most importantly is the staff. All the staff are friendly and helpful. They great customers with a smile and go out of their way to make us feel at home!! A wonderful place to visit and almost every room is scenic. Rooms are large and nicely appointed. It appears that things are usually replaced if broken, but sometimes not! The coffee maker in the room was not functional and getting it replaced was a chore. The screen door on the veranda was off track posing a risk if there was a particularly windy day. Noise was never a problem and the overall atmosphere was quite nice. I would stay here again. It is a LARGE property!

My daughter had her very small wedding at Best Western Plus Island Palms Hotel & Marina. I may not have thought of a Best Western for a wedding venue in the past, but this place far exceeded my expectations on every level. The rooms and the entire hotel were very clean. Impressive for being on the water. Each room had a patio with furniture so you could sit outside and relax. The grounds are beautiful and well-tended. Visually appealing anywhere you look. All the photos below are from the immediate vicinity of the hotel. Shelter Island is very walkable, with water views and parks, a pier, food & coffee. There was also a specialty coffee machine available near the lobby until 10:00 each morning. My go-to was mocha latte. They were fabulous. The event was held in an outside area with an arch overlooking the marina. The event coordinator and staff were extremely friendly and helpful, sometimes going out of their way to ensure the wedding and reception were perfect. From setup to ceremony to reception, everyone was on point. The servers we had were amazing - attentive and considerate. The food at the reception was absolutely delicious. Steak cooked perfectly and the corn risotto was delicious. There is also a bar and grill available right in the hotel (reviewed separately) which was very convenient. I could not have asked for anything more from this hotel. It's in a beautiful location, with wonderful and professional staff.

I always enjoy staying here. They have two pools & a nice restaurant. I get a room facing the marina, but I also enjoy walking along the bay just across the street. It has a great view of San Diego. I have never had any issues with my room & the staff are very professional.

Upon making my reservation, I asked if we could have a view or slight view of the marina. Upon arrival, we were given an older, rather dated room overlooking the parking lot and the side of the facing building. I tried to work with front desk to change our room but the young lady was rude & and no way was going to accommodate us. When asked to see a manager, she refused to find one, indicating no one was around. The building was an older one thus the room was older, carpeting was dirty & bed was definitely old & uncomfortable. The housekeeping was very nice however. Best Western needs to do a better job at accommodating BW members. We will not return to this property.

We came back to our room at the end of the day, 10pm. There Was a large puddle of water on the floor of bathroom and soaking the carpet. It was dripping from the floor above. We ended up finding out the unit above ours had leaking toilet that and the toilet water was going through the ceiling into our room. We had to move to another room in the night with no assistance. The new room was smaller, and without a view (we had paid for view and larger room). The new room also had cigarette burns on the floor and smelled of cigarettes (we are nonsmokers). The next morning at checkout, no staff was aware we had had any problem and the only discount we got was parking. We were in a rush to make our plane so I did not have time to haggle for a more appropriate compensation for the poor experience. I expected someone to care that there was toilet water from the room above was leaking into our room. I expected someone to offer to help us move from an unsafe room in the middle of the night. I expected to be offered the same or better room. I expected a large discount for this terrible experience. I expected some followup from management. I documented my findings with pictures, so please don't remove my review. Also on an earlier occasion, the pool did not have pool towels, walked long way to office to ask for them and they were out.

We love the quiet low crowds laid back vibe of Shelter Island and we love staying at this BW. The location with the marina in back and harbor in front is superb. Our room was large and clean and we loved the balcony to the marina. The counter space in bedroom is nice. Location is close to airport, downtown San Diego, Cabrillo, restaurants. Only place we'll stay.

Great staff. Chong, Reyna and Missael were great on front desk customer service. No breakfast, but great coffee machine serving various coffees Slow internet speed and swimming pool had kids and parents around, so hard to use as a individual.

The location, restaurant and staff are amazing. 10/10! The building and the rooms have gone downhill. This was our second time staying here and we purposefully requested a certain building and floor. We were told this was not a problem however upon arrival we were booked into their older building. The room had a terrible odour that even my husband could not handle, so we asked to be moved. We were moved to where we had originally booked but were told it could only be for 2 days. After 2 days we were moved again! This time the whole entire room and floor had this awful smell to it. I had to buy room spray etc which somewhat helped. Please rip up the carpets! Clean the vents out and renovate the buildings! I love this place and really truly want to come back but am so leary due to this experience.

It was a horrible experience. The staff is unprofessional and unknowledgeable. They were the worst front desk staff I have ever experienced. We have stayed at hundred of luxury hotel properties. This was the absolute worst. NEVER STAY HERE. OUR ANNIVERSARY WAS RUINED. When we inquired about our issue. We were treated super rude and not one apology for our bad experience.

This hotel was spectacular. The location is amazing, on Shelter Island. Many rooms have views of the marina or San Diego Bay (make sure to book one of those). The front desk staff is extremely nice and helpful. The rooms have ceiling fans, which is awesome! Quiet and clear. Just great. The only negative is the restaurant, the Blue Wave Bar and Grill, had terrible service. Long waits to get in (even when it wasn;t particularly full), long waits for a server to come over, etc. Probably a staffing issue.

Location, price and reviews were good so I booked this hotel for 2 nights. Requested a marine view room and they did give me one when I checked in along with free parking. The room was smaller than the photo but it was ok. The in window type AC continious fan mode did not work so I requested a maitenance person who came 3 times and was unable to fix. The constant on and off noise makes it difficult to sleep. The coffee machine in the lobby was broken and there were no towels at the pool. We would not stay here again. The Kona Kai next door looked much better so we will try them next time.

We damaged the front bumper of our car (at a different location). Returning to our hotel room, I called the hotel front desk and asked if we could get some duct tape to temporarily repair the bumper. We didn't want to drive home, 8 hours, with half of the bumper whipping in the wind, and maybe ripping off. The front desk gal said, “Of course. I think I can get a repairman to stop by right now.“ Five minutes later, I met up with SIMON, and he did have duct tape. But upon looking at the partially torn off fender, he got out some screws and his electric drill, and put in 3 or four 4 self-tapping screws, hidden in the wheel well, re-attaching, permanently, the fender to the car. A perfect fix as opposed to $500 body shop fix. I want you to appreciate what he did. I've spent countless hours on the phone getting computer software support. But it's their software. That's their job. Simon is a hotel repairman, with no responsibility whatsoever for guests‘ cars. Yet, he spent 20 minutes, using his repairman problem-solving skills to repair my fender, making it fully roadworthy. He was not worried or concerned that this was outside of his area of responsibility, or his professional skill set. He wasn't worried about a lawsuit if things went wrong. And he wasn't worried about his boss chewing him out for doing something outside of the hotel's role. A stay at a hotel can be deeply harmed by one small bad customer service experience. The opposite is true also. This experience with Simon was deeply appreciated by both me and my wife. An unexpected, awkward problem on our vacation solved in 20 minutes. This made our stay at this hotel special. I could also tell similar, though less dramatic stories, about waitresses at the hotel restaurant, Justine and Stacey, who were sensitive to my wife's many food allergies. And Maria, the restaurant, hostess, who sort of has became friends with my wife. Or I could mention Eugene, who returned my $35 cap. Which any waiter, anywhere should do, but it needs to be acknowledged. So, a deep thank you to Simon, and the other employees. Thank you to the ownership and management that has empowered and given permission to workers like Simon to provide really great customer service. And yes, this was the best customer service experience of my life. Thank you, guys.

Clean comfortable room. The bed was very comfortable. Bathroom was large and clean. The kitchenette was very nice but the fridge was a bit small. Two pools with sufficient chairs. Towels were provided for the pool. The suite was great and the property itself was gorgeous.

Room at the ground floor was humid, obsolete and looked like a usual Motel room. Restaurant was ok. Payed too much for what we got. View was nice but had only 2 garden chairs to share with others. Receptionist did not care if we was happy with the room or not.

This is one of our favorite places for the ambience alone. On San Diego Bay with a great view of the city. Lots of walking paths. Excellent breakfasts. Rooms are slightly dated, but no matter. Very comfortable. Helpful staff. Internet was pretty good. HUGE TV.

When we booked this stay, the hotel was still pet-tolerant (extra fee), but we were informed upon check-in that it will no longer allow pets in the near future. Our first room was in a noisy area by the pool, and when we asked if we could get a quieter room, it was not a problem and were given one directly across from the bay (bottom floor). We did not book an upgrade room, so were fine with a view of the parking lot. It turned out to be perfect, as we could walk right across the street and sit in the grass on the bay, and watch the boats and walkers. The backside of the hotel faces the marina, with some grass areas and chairs to watch the sunset. A sidewalk runs all around the marina and bay side for a nice walk. At the end of the island there were seals to watch. There is a restaurant & bar on the grounds, yet pricey. A coffee machine is available in the lobby between 6-10 am if you don't prefer the tiny machines in the room. A fridge and microwave helped save $ when we brought breakfast makings to enjoy. The location is a quick drive to Point Loma, Mission Bay, Pacific Beach, downtown San Diego and the Embarcadero. The staff was very friendly and personable. The housekeeper for our room was flexible with our schedule and kept us updated of her schedule as well. There is a quaint tiny food spot on the fishing pier (Fathom Bistro Bait Tackle) that serves unique sausage and craft brews. Very tiny dining area inside, and a few tables outside. A must-try when on Shelter Island. The room was comfortable, with a wall A/C unit that kept room cool (a little loud), wood blinds on the windows let light in during the morning, but not too bad. The first night was a bit noisy (thin walls/floors), but after the family left, it was very quiet and pleasant. Enjoyed our stay. There are extra fees for parking (per night). Would stay again when we could afford it, and no dog with us.

Room was clean. Housekeeping was very good, she supplied us with everything that we requested. Unfortunately the restaurant staff was slow. The restaurant was not very busy and now we know why. However, the food was quite good. Too bad the wait staff wasn't in a hurry to wait on us.

We stayed at this hotel from July 23-29, during Comic-Con season. We got this hotel in the OnPeak hotel lottery, our first time trying it and it worked quite well! Our room was in a central location, right outside the main pool's gates and next to the lobby, but it was a little smaller than we were expecting for triple occupancy (last time we stayed here we had a balcony), and with no natural light unless you opened the blinds all the way - not ideal as we were right outside the pool where many people passed by. Shelter Island is a great location, we always love to stay here as it is a little quieter away from the madness of the convention and downtown, and it's very walkable, with many small restaurants, coffee shops, and hotels along it. The distance from the downtown was slightly annoying considering we were going to the convention centre most days of our stay, but the shuttle outside was frequent and we always found a spot. There is also a bus stop on the island and rideshare services, of course. Breakfast in the hotel restaurant/bar was very nice, and with a great view over the marina. Our servers were really friendly (as was all of the staff we encountered). The pool was also nice and empty in the mornings but extremely busy in the evenings so recommend going earlier - it does suddenly drop from 3-7ft however so be careful, especially with kids! You also need a wristband and pool towels, but you can get these from reception. Overall, we really enjoyed our stay and would definitely consider staying at this hotel again.

Great location, view, amenities and staff. We loved Shelter Island and our balcony faced the bay. Breakfast with a marina view was delicious. The pool and hot tub were relaxing and also had a marina view. There was beauty everywhere we looked. The staff was helpful and kind.

We docked our boat in the marina and we stayed just a short walk from the docks. Beautiful marina setting. Woke up to an osprey right outside our room, so cool! Walked along the San Diego bay and walked into Point Loma for dinner. Our room was very comfortable and all of the staff at the hotel and restaurant were super friendly and helpful. We had a great stay and would definitely recommend.

The stay was just average The scenery and the atmosphere is absolutely beautiful you can't deny that The rooms are average nothing extravagant. We only stayed for one night our friends were in town and stayed there as well for a few more nights when we stayed there we noticed that the jacuzzi over by the casa del Mar building was very green unfortunately we went in it anyways and ended up ruining my jewelry I've had this jewelry on for at least 20 years I've never taken it off in a pool and this one seemed to ruin it we did go swimming in their pool which was fine little bit cold not he'd like they said but that's okay it was hot outside but the jacuzzi felt slimy gross we were maybe in it for a matter of 3 minutes until we got out of there it completely ruined my jewelry it had also turned our bathing suit colors like faded them extremely quickly I have video proof of me right before I got into the jacuzzi and then saw what it was doing to my jewelry and took video right after

Convenient location with great views. Pleasant staff, overall quiet location. If you want to be on Shelter Island, this is a good spot. Good spot for families, two nice pool areas and right across from a Bay beach, not the open ocean, so no waves for boogie boarding or surfing but good for younger kids. Not far from the Pacific Beach/Mission Beach/Ocean Beach areas. Great views of Downtown, close to the airport.

My family and I spent a total of eight nights here and couldn't have been more pleased with the experience. The location is awesome, the service is very accommodating and the rooms were comfortable and clean. We spent a lot of time on the road but we did spend one day just hanging out at the hotel. They have nice pickleball courts, a pool, a restaurant, and bicycle rentals. And best of all the price was very reasonable in this day of age. I would come back for sure.

Didn't realize our room door would open to the outside. It was a ground floor room underneath the stairs to the 2nd floor so felt like we were in the basement. Room had a urine-like smell but we were too tired to ask for a new room-no bell carts (at least to this part of the property) and even though we could park near our room, we still had to make several trips to unload so didn't want to go through that again. The highlight of the property, besides the beautiful location, is the restaurant. Great food, drinks, & service.

I absolutely love this hotel, especially Stacy! She was so sweet and went above and beyond for me. I own a small business and I recognize rock stars when I see them, and she definitely Rockstar! This is about my 3rd time staying here and I will continue to stay here for years to come.

Great views of the entire Marina from the room AND while you eat a great breakfast (or any meal) at their restaurant. You can ask for a patio or balcony. Fun poolside entertainment..a walkway that goes along the entire dock for beautiful walks. Very safe

The views of downtown San Diego are amazing! The bay views on each side are also great. It's nearby many great restaurants, parks and things to do. Easy to get to. The parking is tight and a little messy.the pool and hot tubs were great. We enjoyed sitting by the fire near the pools after a soak. The room we stayed in had a little bit of a noise issue because of a walking path that was right next to our room and I am a light sleeper and there was a family on our floor that were inconsiderate to the other guest. Their kids were loud and ran up and down the hall. But it was only 2 nights of our stay. Thankfully.

The Island Palms has always been extremely accommodating and a very relaxing place to stay! You can't find a better hotel for the location and price!

My spouse and I stayed at Island Palms for 4 nights to escape the heat of Arizona. This was an ideal location for us. Tranquil yet close enough to the Harbor, sightseeing opportunities, restaurants, etc. The amenities were fine and the room was kept clean. The bed was comfortable, the tvs were huge. We stayed on the marina side on the 2nd floor and spent a lot of time on the balcony just enjoying the sights. The pool/hot tub were clean and fresh. The restaurant/lounge had good food and a pleasant view. No loud guests at all during our stay. I honestly can't think of a single thing tht wasn't just right. We'll definitely be back.

Paid extra for a bay view and there was no bay view. The service in the restaurant was horrible. The person on the phone at Guest Services was totally rude. On the plus side, they tried to have the food in the restaurant be good.

All things considered, I think this has got to be one of the top Best Westerns in the country. The beauty of the location has a lot to do with that, with the marina on one side , the bay on the other, walking paths all around. My room was not exceptional, as I did not get a water view, but it was clean. I appreciate the refrigerator and microwave , coffee maker. The beds were fine . The restaurant has great food, not cheap, but so much better than the usual BW fare. The IPA beers on tap were a little too strong, alcohol content wise for my liking, but a good bar atmosphere. Parking at 25 per night not a plus. Housekeepers were good. The hotel apparently is skimpy on waste baskets in the one bed room. One tiny wastebasket only. One housekeeper gave me another one , but next day's housekeeper took it back??

We had an issue on the property with a non-guest using the laundry room to do drugs. Some staff seemed to be aware of this issue happening before but no follow up was provided. Front desk manager left a message days later and said he would call back but never did. I left a message for him to please call, but he never did. I believe there are some systemic problems with lack of security and lack of follow up to guest concerns.

Secret Gem- Best Western Plus is delivering 5 star value for a 3.5 star price. We were overwhelmed by personal luxuries of wonderful bed, pillows and linens. Citrus accented shampoo & bathing products that I wanted to rip off the wall and take home.

Great room layout/nice kitchenette area/pet friendly Our room had a balcony with a great view of where people fish. We walked our dog daily across the way/grass area. We were able to order out food from Miguel's restaurant and return to eat in our room. Best Western restaurant breakfast was tasty.

I love Shelter Island and have been coming to the island and this hotel for over 40 years. The hotel has aged gracefully. The island and the surrounding area have a lot to offer. Views are the marina, the bay, downtown San Diego, Point Loma. Plenty of parking, cement picnic tables, fishing pier, and a variety of restaurants nearby.

The location is perfect for doing everything or nothing at all. The views are beautiful on Shelter Island and the property is laid back and tropical.

The room was great: mattress, tv, coffee maker, coffee, carpet, window coverings and AC. All were perfectly cleaned and maintained. Bathroom and dressing area impeccable. The fitness room was cool and smelled fresh; equipment was well maintained and clean. Pools and areas were kept clean. One area has an outside fireplace which we enjoyed two days. The on site restaurant offers excellent menu, food and service. Plus, guess what: a great singer and guitarist who performed all our favorites! We chose a water view with a balcony! Top everything off with Denny, Manager, Alex, Front Desk, and a well trained staff: great experience!

Our go to Hotel in San Diego to relax. It's easy to get to all of the attractions if that's what you want to do.

This place has an awesome location compared to some of the other Best Western hotels in San Diego, rooms are decent and facilities are great. Its really close to the Sea World (in case you are visiting). Well maintained property. Great view of the US Naval base. Nice chilled out beach. Overall great experience.

Shelter Island is a special place. Morning reveille and Star Spangled Banner echoes off Point Loma at 8am. Harbor activity, bike rental, watching yachts in marina. A great place to stay.

Dead bugs in one of our beds and no management on property for the weekend had to complain to the front desk who has no capabilities of making decisions. Finally, after several visits to the front desk, a manager did call and say that they would comp our first night however, when I checked out, I was still charged. I'm waiting for a call.

It was not a good expirence for us. First our room was given away to someone else so even though we pre paid we got stuck with a much smaller room. Next housekeeping comes to kick us out at 9am, check out is at 11 but they needed to get started in order for us to get our original room later. We finally end up with our room and it's not cleaned well. There's socks left over from the previous person, there was a roach in the window on the inside of the room. We asked for a late check out they said no. It was literally the worst place we've ever stayed at!

I stayed here for a business trip and spent a week here. I thought it was a very nice hotel. Rooms were of good size. There were a few pools that you could lounge around for good views of the marina. Food was great for hotel food with lots of Mexican-style foods, loads of guacamole, and a great range of breakfast options. There was never enough water, however. The rooms were a bit dark, but opened to the sunrise every morning. They had cute decks that you could sit out and enjoy. I ended up paying an outrageous price for one extra night which is why I downgraded a star. It wasn't worth the value and I probably would have moved had it been my own hotel

It's pretty decent hotel , I feel like they are kind of lagging in some areas of cleanliness . The main pool has a lot of trash in bushes and on the grounds . Maybe need more trash cans . Overall it was a decent stay the grounds just needs a little love it is a beautiful hotel

Island Palms is my first choice for lodging when visiting my Aztec at SDSU. I love the beautiful marina and wonderful lovely walking path past the boat yard to get my coffee every morning. The huge hotel is always quiet, even when full, and the sounds of the marina activity are soothing. Room is always clean and staff has always been friendly and helpful. And the restaurant, surprisingly meets whatever meal we are trying to find.

Island Palms is beautiful. Danny is our go to for most any concerns or needs. He is so friendly and helpful. He deserves a raise for all the hard work he is doing. Looks like he is doing the work of 3 supervisors. He is one of the main reasons we go to Island Palms. Clint and Ben were also stand out employees who did everything they could to help. This trip had its hiccups and issues, but I know the front desk staff did their best. The view is always so amazing. Love the spa and fireplace. Thank you as always for having the best hotel in the area. The internet in room 420 needs some help as it would go on and off throughout the day as well as be at 1 maybe 2 bars. All the while, other rooms seem like they have been upgraded. Definitely something to look into right away. The lighting could use a little help, just needs to be more and a bit brighter and wider range. Any of my other major feedback has been left on the survey.

My wife and I love staying at this Best Western for a variety of reasons. It's close to my son's college, close to Sea World, and close to many other attractions. My son and I love to go deep sea fishing out of Point Loma Marina only minutes from the hotel.

The hotel was very clean and well kept. We were facing the Harbour and the view was great. The check in process was quick and easy. Hotel staffs were very friendly and helpful. If you want to park in the hotel parking lot, there is a charge. But, you can easily find a free parking spot across the street. The bed was very comfortable. We enjoyed our stay and we plan on staying here again next time.

Dirty room, soiled carpeting, stains on sofa. smelly, lousy service, intermittent wifi, and WAY overpriced for what you receive. Really bad.

Nice place, but watch out for the breakfast if included. My booking clearly says 'bed and breakfast' but that's misleading and dishonest. When I arrrived I was given little slips of paper to take to breakfast which only allowed one item and to a maximum of $17 per person, which when you look at the menu is one item. You have to pay for everything else so I'm expecting a bill of $60-$100+ by the time I leave as they are adding surcharges, tax and tips on top. So breakfast is not included and I've raised with my travel agent as I've never had this happen in previous Best Western hotels.

Don't go as a group. We had worked with group sales for a room block, but they scattered us in different buildings, said no way to put rooms together.

Clean and Comfortable rooms with spectacular Oceanside views! Excellent food and service at the restaurant! Located by long bayside walking path. Fishing pier with beer canteen situated across the street from the hotel. Quiet and peaceful away from the traffic of the city.

Stayed here as a family of four over spring break. Beautiful and safe location. We drove down about 45 min from Legoland. However, it is very close to the airport, Old Town and Balboa Park (~ 15 min). Has frequent views of military aircraft and helicopters. This was a plus to us. There is a waterfront path frequented by walkers and joggers. There are at least four restaurants on the strand including the famous music venue Humphreys. We didn't get a chance to try the restaurant on-site but it looked nice. We didn't want to pay the $20/person breakfast. There were two pools that were both kid friendly and nicely heated. Our room was an extra spacious double Queen with a kitchen. We were very pleased with that upgrade. The fitness room was nicely equipped and clean. Only negative during our stay was there was a boiler repair occurring in our building that resulted in no hot water for several hours. After some negotiations we were able to be adequately accommodated. Overall, this was a minor inconvenience in what was a very beautiful and memorable vacation.

Please stop spraying Lysol disinfectant everywhere!!!! The smell inside the hotel rooms and hallways is disgusting! Instant headache. Also, something in the room gave me an asthma attack. Probably the overuse of aerosol disinfecting sprays. I overheard another guest describe the smell inside the hotel as “like a Starbucks bathroom.” I think that nailed it. The place is old and moldy, I guess they think spraying disinfectant constantly will make a difference. I had lots of trouble sleeping because of the smell. If you have asthma, allergies, or are sensitive to odors, this isn't a place you should stay. I can't ever recall being so uncomfortable or miserable at a hotel.

Shelter Island is a great place to stay. It's close to the airport, quiet and the views are stunning. We had marina views from our patio which we enjoyed immensely. We booked the breakfast rate which was really great because it allowed us to fill up before a busy day out. The couch in our room was a sofa bed and it wasn't very comfortable to sit in for long periods of time. Front desk/guest services was responsive every time we called. We also loved using the gorgeous pool, but being close to the hot tub meant we could hear the people there every night until about 11 pm when it closed. Sound proofing isn't great - a family member staying in another room heard people talking (not yelling or partying) until 3 am. Bring ear plugs and a sound machine!

We recently stayed at Island Palms Hotel and Marina with its spectacular view of the marina. This was our 5th stay at the hotel and hopefully it will not be our last. The restaurant and bar, whilst having a fairly limited menu, serves up lovely food with friendly and courteous staff. The rooms are perfectly adequate for our needs but could perhaps benefit from a refresh in the near future. The location is fantastic having amazing marina views to the rear and bay view to the front and is well located for the international airport. Since returning home (to the UK) we have an issue that we wish to discuss directly with customer service at the hotel. We have sent several emails and contacted Best Western in the UK to confirm the correct email address. To date, no-one has replied to our communications. We would appreciate if a member of the management team would reach out to us at the earliest opportunity in order to quickly resolve our outstanding issue. We are making plans to return to Island Palms later this year.

Can't say enough about how terrific the entire staff was from check in to housekeeping. I wish I had the recipe for the Mai Tais they serve at the bar. THe restuarant menu did not dissappoint, either. Terrific selection. Try the Tuna Tataki appetizer and the smoky Rib Eye.

My husband and I booked a scenic view suite for a recent stay of 4 nights. We were disappointed that the “view” from the room was a tiled roof and the “view” from the balcony was the adjacent building. Not very scenic at all. The front desk was courteous but no other rooms were available and was offered no adjustment to our bill for $300 for one night. We checked out after one night and found other accommodations. As a long time Rewards member, I was very disappointed.

The area is very beautiful. The rooms were clean and nice as well. No issues with the room :) I did however have an issue with my bill, which the manager was very helpful and quick to fix once it was brought to their attention.

This is a nice location but unfortunately someone entered our room and stole cash from our backpacks. We had the "do not make up the room" sign on the door but it was obvious that someone let themselves in. They tucked my wallet into the wrong pocket after taking only the cash and zipping it back up. Good lesson to always lock stuff away but very disappointing though. We didn't have time to stick around and find out how this happened and obviously we weren't getting our cash back (It was both our Canadian and American and approx $120 ish). The beds were comfortable...

This used to be my go-to place in San Diego, but it has slipped. This stay was in the Casa Del Mar building. Its wooden frame creaks and sags, and you can smell the rot in halls and rooms. This building lacks the character of the older parts of the resort and the luxury of the Casa Marina building. You can fix that by picking the right room, but you can't fix the $25 NIGHTLY PARKING FEE management has added! In Point Loma! It takes a lot of nerve to rip people off like that when you're already the only BW in town without free breakfast. That said, I loved the BW Yacht Harbor a mile down the street that gives you both free breakfast and free parking.

Quiet. Comfortable. Clean. Parking across the street. Marina View. Easy walk to other restaurants. Shelter Island is still old school and has not been turned into developments with skyscrapers. Nothing higher than 2 or 3 stories. The Bar/Lounge Happy Hour is the way to go. Prices are very good, even for wine, which was fine and drinkable. The food is quite tasty and we were quite surprised how good it was. Breakfast in the hotel is actually a REAL breakfast. Not those chaotic buffets with tons of people running around and grabbing stuff and fake eggs. You order from the menu! Breakfast served hot and to order. No chaos. Window seats on the water.

My husband and I went to San Diego for a quick, one night, getaway and had a wonderful time! We spent some time in La Jolla to walk along the water and then headed to Shelter Island. We were able to check in an hour early. We then went for a walk along the water right in front of the hotel! It is gorgeous! This is one of the best parts of this hotel. The other major positive is that we can walk to Ketch for dinner! We love being able to walk to eat or get a coffee! There's a coffee and gelato place right next to Ketch. There are a few other restaurants within walking distance too. We love dining with a water view. We have stayed at BW Island Palms about five times now and will definitely be back! The only thing that surprised us this time was the $25 parking fee. We don't remember ever having to pay that in the past. There's free parking across the street though. Overall, this is a beautiful location!. We always request a marina view!

We are locals and were going to a concert at Humphrey's and did not want to drive home late so we booked a room and were totally pleased either the accommodations. We stayed in the Del Mar rooms and had a wonderful view and dinner and total stay.

I'd been wanting to come to this property since the first time I visited San Diego. Even knowing that the marina view were the best rooms I picked the basic one. Huge mistake. The view to the parking lot in the first floor was not enticing and the room in the small side, very basic. But as days went by (we stayed 3 days) I was happy for my selection. First, the bed was comfy (pillows so-so but that's the norm), the housekeeping was great, the reception desk amazing. Then we realized that, yes we have the parking lot view, but cross the street and you'll find the sea and boats. Beautiful. Second, loved the area. Loved it. I'd stay again here in a heartbeat. Then parking lot: yes you have to pay 22 USD (or so) to park in the premises overnight, but you have plenty of free parking across the street and you can also park your car during the day even without a permit: we returned to take a breather every day and that was awesome. Overall, yes I'd stay here again. Small, a bit on the basic side, but clean, good service, next to the sea and marina... Yup, all good!

The location was very peaceful and close to the airport. The only negative comment I had was there was a sewer smell coming out of the toilet. We noticed this on our third night. Since it was after 9 PM we called the front desk and spoke to Alex to have the maintenance check it in the morning. The next day no calls, no voicemails, and no missed calls…no follow up calls. We ended up just closing the toilet lid every time otherwise the bathroom would smell like a sewer. Housekeeping forgot to service our room even though they were right next door when we left and I made sure the sign to make up the room was hanging. I called the front desk, they sent the housekeeping, I told them we were leaving and they could come anytime. When we came back, the bed was made up and the towels were replaced but the dirt on the floor was not cleaned. This is the same day we noticed the sewer smell in the bathroom. When we checked in there we no trashliners. The nightstand varnish was peeling. The coffeemaker has mold and it's obvious that it was not cleaned prior to our check in. Other than that our stay was nice..The hotel staff was nice, the restaurant staffs were very accommodating and very friendly. I would come back here, it's a very nice location. Thank you.

I am mixed on this review. The hotel was great. The stay was awesome. But there was a mix up in booking between the third party vendor and Best Western. Our dates somehow magically were for the previous week. No email from the hotel asking if we were coming, no contact whatsoever. Then when we tried to check in the nice guy behind the counter said oh your reservations were for last week??? So we had to pay for our stay again. Lucky for us the third party vendor, after contacting BW said they would refund it. BW said it was not their fault. Again, when no one shows up for 3 days I am sure you rented those rooms.

Planned a quick trip to San Diego Shelter Island. We usually stay At Humphrey's but the were over priced for the time we wanted. Thought we would try the neighboring hotel “Island Palms”. So glad we did. Room was great, ground floor in Casa Marina building. Facing the marina. Room 478.

The entire building stank especially the hallways and the stairs. We contemplated on leaving in the middle of the night. The air quality in the room was so poor. It smelled of molds and the AC was blowing out dirty air. Everything felt old and dirty. The shower water pressure was weak. Even the pool was disappointing. It was not even heated. Did not see a single staff around to complain to. We are only about 2 hours away from San Diego and regret having stayed at such a crappy hotel for 200 plus dollars when our home and pool are 200% nicer and cleaner. It was the worst decision ever. Never again will we stay in this hotel.

You will be so happy you booked this property. It has a fantastic location, the friendliest staff and great amenities. I've stayed here three times and was never disappointed. I highly recommend this hotel.

Hotel rooms need to have USB ports there was none. Rooms are nice clean. The location is beautiful. Dining facilities are outstanding. Coffee in the morning you can't beat that and the people are outstanding and great they make you laugh. They make you feel comfortable just like being with other friends in your family.

Booked this hotel based upon the reviews that said there was a playground and beach on the peninsula, in addition to the 2 hotel pools & 2 hot tubs. The hotel felt very private, secluded and safe. There was plenty of free street parking for during the day, and the parking lots (across from the hotel) were supposedly free overnight and at your own risk. I didn't rent a car this trip, so I didn't test it out. There is hotel parking for $25/night in their parking lots, and also a garage near the tennis courts for overflow. When booking the room on-line direct with the hotel, there is an option to "Include breakfast" for approximately $15 to $20 more per night. I ended up booking this option, which allowed a $16 credit towards an entree (at the hotel restaurant) on the Breakfast Menu (7am-11am) for each person on the reservation. We enjoyed starting our vacation day with a nice breakfast. Most of the entrees are priced between $14-$16, so we only had to purchase coffee or juice, if we wanted it. The $16 credit, also paid the tip on the bill as well, so that was nice and unexpected. We still tipped on our meal to be generous, as we had excellent service every morning. The front desk could improve check-in information- I only found out days later they have a fancy coffee machine across the lobby for free from 7am-10am, it's kind of hidden, so I didn't notice it ever. There was also a Polynesian show on Thursdays (which we missed) and a DJ pool party/music on Fridays (we also missed). The hotel location is ideal. It's away from the hotel that hosts concerts (Humphrey's?), so the concert noise isn't a nuisance. This hotel does not charge a resort fee, which was amazing. The other fancy hotel next door, was crazy expensive and did have a steep resort fee too. I loved that the area was safe and I was able to run around Shelter Island, which was a 3.5 mile loop and perfect to continue my marathon training while out of town. Only con- the room was a little musty/humid, but the marina is right outside the room, and the other side of the building has open water as well. The air conditioning wall units worked great, so that was a big plus.

We arrived tonight.We we're so excited for this trip,I requested a marina view third floor phoned twice to confirm.We arrive to a bottom floor ,ok no problem.I phoned front desk the lady was rude and short with me saying they have nothing left. When we arrived she was on her phone and I had to say hello ,then she got off her phone. Our room is dirty and gross ,It's like a motel 6.I pulled down my sheets to crawl in bed ,there was a long black hair in my bed (I'm blonde) I wiped down the major touch surfaces.The light switch in the bathroom was a dark color it's now cream coloured.There are stains on the bathroom wall The chairs feel wet.The furniture is very old and tired.I will go talk to another staff member in the morning . Our view is of the marina which is nice. Our package came with breakfast from the restaurant and they were both pretty good. It is a nice area to stay it is quieter and right at the water The people at the front desk the next morning really nice.

My family of 5 stayed here as it was the last leg of our California road trip. It was a lovely end to a week of visiting various California destinations… the BW suite was spacious for 5 (2 queen beds & a pull-out couch) with a kitchen and a large bathroom. Free bikes and 2 pools overlooking a beautiful water setting. Staff was very nice. Would stay here again!

We arrived at 3 pm. I knew check in was 4pm so I was not surprised when I was told I would be called when the room was ready or if I wasn't called by 4 to come back. The only issue was the front desk agent was really hard to understand, she mumbled and seemed a bit spacey. We walked away asking each other “what was she saying?”. After 4, with no call, back to the desk. Huge line. When I finally made it to the front, our room still was not ready. Apparently there was a communication issue between housekeeping and the front desk. After some back and forth, we finally had a room. I want to commend Maria for helping us. She was in training and I could tell stressed but she was friendly and efficient. We had a double suite with a full kitchen. Walking in, we were disappointed. Our scenic view was of other buildings roofs and a tiny sliver of water seen between huge trees. Everything was really worn and outdated. Not only worn, the room was DIRTY. There were splatters all over the old kitchen cabinets, inside them and under the sink. The ceiling fan was filthy with black dirt all over it. The carpets were questionable to walk on with bare feet. The kitchen on inspection was lacking. This suite sleeps six (sofa sleeper) but I found three coffee cups, three plates, four saucers and three bowls. In the silverware drawer was three forks and knives, four spoons. No glasses only cheap plastic cups. No cutting knives. I found some banged up pots and pans, a couple of cooking utensils, coffee pot, toaster. That's it. No dish towels, no pot holders. Under the sink a used sponge and a half-empty tiny bottle of dish soap. In the bedroom, the beds were on the firm size but manageable. Unfortunately, one pillowcase had black stains all over it. The beds were so close to the wall/closet that the second person would have issues getting in and out. That's when I realized that although the room had been “updated” it was only at 50%. For example, they had a granite shower surround and countertop but left the worn out tub and cracked sink. The toiletries were communal attached to the shower wall but the shower gel was completely empty. There weren't any washcloths. There were just so many little things. Paint was chipping all over. The toilet needed two flushes to work. The shower valve leaked. There were broken blinds. The bedroom door didn't actually have a latch so didn't really close. The bedroom fan squeaked all night. We had to keep calling for supplies that should have been replenished like the plastic cups. We finally got washcloths but I had to ask for them. This “resort” was on the cheaper side for San Diego. However, you get what you pay for. I wish we had paid a little more for a cleaner, better maintained property.

We arrived at this hotel on a Saturday and left on Tuesday. Great location. The only issue I had was with parking. I feel if you are going to be charged for parking, then there should be a parking spot for you. You shouldn't have to search for a spot across or down the street like we did.

Never having been to San Diego, I had a difficult time deciding what area to stay in. I was very happy with my choice of this hotel where we recently stayed for 4 nights in a king bed suite (2 rooms/2 full bathrms!) in the Casa del Mar bldg facing marina. Arrived evening of July 4th and saw a beautiful fireworks display in front of hotel on bay. Our room was clean, wonderful & spacious for the 3 of us except the bathroom had not been renovated yet which on phone was told it would be. All the windows could be opened and, with temps in 70's, was a delight since we had just visited Palm Springs (110F). Pull out was comfortable for our daughter as was our king. I chose the breakfast package which amounted to a $16/pp/per day voucher. NOTE: gratuity is included (should be printed on voucher). We were not informed & were giving tips to our servers personally until we got a receipt because we ordered other items. Also, it is not $16 total but a breakfast entree up to $16. Location was great -from here it was a short ride to all the places we wanted to visit. We would definitely stay here again but request a room closer to main bldg where restaurant is. Parking space close to room location was difficult to find after 9pm.

The room was not cleaned properly at all. Found a used hair brush in between the mattress and headboard, staples and crumbs on the carpet, a used tissue under the bathroom sink( no trash can in bathroom) no silverware in kitchenette…had to call front desk to bring up. Also had to call for extra blanket and was told there were no extra blankets. For the price I paid I would've expected a much cleaner room and more understanding from the staff.

The Island Palms hotel has views of water and boats from the balcony. The access to the airport, downtown San Diego, and restaurants is outstanding. The Pt. Loma weather makes for a cool summer, away from heat and closeness otothe ocean. The rooms are clean and the restaurant has good seafood.

The location was great, close to a lot of restaurants, airport etc. etc. However, our room left a lot to be desired. Very dirty and desperately needed painting. Furniture old and tired looking. Things that should have automatically been stocked in the kitchen were not and we had to call housekeeping for dish detergent, sponges etc. etc. we had a nice marina view room. Was not impressed with their restaurant, the blue wave. All in all would probably not return.

Loved everything about this property... Great location and friendly staff. Only con is the decking on the second floor... Ended up in urgent care with my 2 year old to have an inch long splinter removed from his foot. Other than that minor inconvenience the hotel was beautiful and we will definitely be visiting again on our yearly trip to SD.

This hotel was so wonderful that I extended my stay several nights. The service was fantastic every step of the way. I particularly loved the "luxury apartment" feel of the suite I had. My suite overlooked the marina, and the overall vibe was relaxing and very welcoming. A special note of thanks to the fantastic staff at the front desk, who were very kind and welcoming. This place is just a gem in the heart of Shelter Island.

Very nice place to stay , a little outdated . Hallways have an old smell to it . I feel a little too expensive for this type of room . Shower head has no pressure , it took forever just to shower and rinse my hair . The staff though was great !! Just don't go to the restaurant, bad slow service .

My trip was for a church retreat. The hotel staff were especially kind, helpful and went out of their way to assist me with finding the perfect room and location so that I was close to the event. ( I have a handicap and I had a LOT of luggage !) The food served was delicious and plentiful, and service was efficient and gracious. The location is awesome, right on the marina on Shelter Island.

Coming in a little late with this review. We stayed here for a couple of nights in November. It's a nice place with decent view of the water. It's older, but everything works. Very good value overall. I would stay here again if in the area.

The location is great. The rooms are nice and spacious. Occasional street care noise but overall it was really nice. Too bad it rained all weekend. Our boys have brought their xbox to play but the new TV does not allow any external devices to work. They gym equipment is also wanting according to my son.

This was a birthday for my daughter's 15th over the Martin Luther King Jr weekend, we stayed in a mini suite with water view, spacious room and my daughter loved that our building had its own smaller pool and jacuzzi made it feel more quaint which was nicer for me who prefers not to be in a swimsuit in public so I enjoyed the fact that only 2 other guests were in the pool area with us!

Island Palms never disappoints. It's my favorite hotel in San Diego. It's also the best value. The location offers the opportunity to walk around Shelter Island and enjoy the views and art installations. We enjoyed seeing the osprey nest that has been built near the point. Two ospreys were in residence. What a treat. We also enjoyed the sound of barking seals in the harbor. Really what San Diego is all about.

The front desk staff members were nice and friendly. The hotel room was a good size. The beds were comfortable, plenty of desk area and the bathroom had plenty of counter space. The negatives were the fact that the room was a bit dark – they need better lighting. The room and hallway looked a bit worn out, could use new carpets, but not bad. (Probably the lighting was not that great, so one wouldn't notice the little issues.) The location was nice, with ocean in the front and the marina in the back. There were 2 pools and a sauna with views of the marina. In spite of the minor negatives, I would stay here again.

We enjoyed the hotel, it is in a beautiful location right by the marina and the bay. The staff was great both for check-in and at the restaurant for breakfast. Plus it is close to the airport which made it easy to return the rental car.

I stayed here for two nights - one on each side of a flight to Hawaii. For my first stay, I arrived about 4 hours before normal check-in, but Clinton at the front desk found me a room and checked me in early, which I greatly appreciated because it had been a long day of travel. I had a great room facing the marina in back of the property. It had a nice little patio and there was a walkway to the marina, pool, and hotel restaurant. The grounds are lovely and extremely well-maintained. My room was really cozy and smelled really clean when I walked in. The bed and pillows were a dream to sleep on. All of the staff that I had contact with were great! This property is across the street from a lovely park that seems popular with the locals. Very close to a naval training station, so the military aircraft flying around was pretty interesting. I felt safe as a female solo traveler.

We like staying on Shelter Island because of the location. It is quiet, seems more like a neighborhood than a resort area and really convenient to get to other areas in San Diego. And San Diego Bay is right there. This hotel is nicer and a better value than other hotels in the area. The staff is friendly, professional and fast.

The room was clean and very nice, it has a balcony that let's you view the marina. Staff is very friendly. Theres a parking garage and tennis court. Across the street is a small park and beautiful views of the city. Parking is $25

What a find this elegant hotel is with easy access to outstanding restaurants in the scenic yacht area. It is clean, comfortable, quiet and secure. Places to walk and its peaceful ambiance is worth the stay,

There is a bay view and marina view. The bay view looks over the parking lot and road around Shelter Island, marina view has a nice walking path in front of the buildings. We had 3 rooms in the 100 building, all the same but just a tad tired. Loved that the windows opened for fresh air. Woke up to the fog horn at 6am, a pleasant surprise. Good place to stay on Shelter Island, bikes were available too.

Stayed here for two nights in June 2022. Great spot to stay! Clean, beautiful views of marina or views of the Navy base just across the water! Would definitely stay here again! Only issue was one night loud banging at 2AM-4AM from either above or beside our room. It sounded like a washer /dryer running for hours.

This is a beautiful hotel with very clean guest rooms. The rooms have extremely comfortable beds, spotless bathrooms and good internet. The location is in a beautiful area and rooms have a small patio with a gorgeous view of the marina and the San Diego skyline. Great places to walk and excellent restaurants nearby.

I would definitely stay here again. The rooms was nice, the view was amazing. Did have few issues: Guests below us were smoking weed, and it filled out room with the smell. I had a headache all night and was mad. Called the front desk they said they would send security to investigate. I thought this is a smoke free location. They said it is, and they would be charged $350 for violating rules, I asked to speak to a mgr. not on duty. Went to front desk in AM talked to front desk no Mgr. on duty yet explained issues, I was credited for half my stay. Parking is $25 a day, that is ridiculous. No continental breakfast. Elevator was out of order all weekend, suddenly Monday AM working. Vending machines were stocked wrong, hit button for a red Gatorade and blue came out. If you don't like blue this is a problem.

The views of the harbor, multiple pools, and peaceful surroundings led to a relaxing and rejuvenating week-long stay. We held a training for 33 people on the site and the staff went above and beyond to make sure all our participants had what they needed. Maddie and Jaime are extremely supportive, communicative, and attentive to details.

This hotel is in a very nice location. We had a beautiful view outside of our hotel room door. We have stayed here several times and we always enjoy it the hotel property is beautiful. The rooms have everything you need to enjoy your weekend. We were celebrating my nieces birthday and this made it even more special than it was

The location was great. The staff was great. The room was only OK. Clean but dated and there was peeling paint on the bathroom door. There were areas on the wall that had been repaired and the repair was lumpy. They could have done a better job! The lobby looked clean but there was an old smell in the air. Needed Fabreeze!

Third or fourth time we've stayed here, great as always. We had a Queen Studio and our room had been refurbished since our last visit. Great view over the marina from the balcony and we didn't hear any noise from other guests though the hotel was quite busy.

The room was not cleaned well and the odor of mold was so strong that it smelled like a herd of cats had used it for a litter box. We were traveling the next day and stayed here due to its close proximity to the airport and the location looked lovely (it is) By the time we settled in, it was late, and we thought we could stand it for the night, so we didn't ask for a room change. just left as early as possible and killed time until our flight the next day. One of my worst hotel experiences ever.

Great visit. This Hotel so our go to place to stay when in San Diego. All the staaff we encountered were friendly, helpful, and accommodating. Highly recommend staying here. You won't be disappointed.

This is a nice quiet hotel with ocean views. However I had two issues that I will not be going back or recommending. I was charged twice 2 separate charges for room plus $200 deposit fee. Then when I went to check out they said my card didn't go through ( because they had already taken the money) they said I had to pay with credit card which I did. So for 3 days I was charged $1,616.14 in total. The manager told me in 10 days the reservation charges would be refunded. 13 days later still no refund. I called 2xs to management. They now told me I have to contact the card company. What a headache!! Let me throw in that the hotel restaurant is way overpriced for the quality of food. I ordered breakfast and the breakfast sausage tasted like one of those cheap microwaveable frozen food patties. This is a nice area on Shelter Island Drive I suggest looking into other hotels on this street. Good luck!

Danny and his fellow staff are outstanding. They go above and beyond because it's obvious they just want you to be happy and to enjoy your vacation. Unfortunately, I can say just the opposite for the staff in the rewards program. It is genuinely a group of, how does the expression go, corporate pinheads. I don't mean to be judgmental but I have never seen such a lack of common sense in my life. Again, my Kudos go to Danny and his fellow staff members for just having a positive attitude and willing to do what it takes. I've been coming to this establishment for over 10 years and I will continue unless the rewards program what's in somehow. When in SD with family we always choose Island Palms for the location and size of the suites. Location puts you close to all that SD has to offer. Views of the city, the bay & marina are great. Nice salt water pools & spas. The 2 bed suites in the older part of the hotel are great for families with a good sized living room, bedroom, deck, and a small kitchen with full sized fridge and electric stovetop. It is a great value when traveling with family.

We enjoyed a great 3 night stay. The hotel was full but was still quiet. We had a lovely view of the marina and enjoyed coffee on our li'l deck every morning after our morning walk. We were there for SDSU family weekend so used our rental car more than we would have liked but next time we look forward to enjoying the peace of the hotel and its amenities (like the pool) more.

The view is amazing. The right room will give the most amazing experience. Dany is the best, most caring, helpful person. We hope to see him become the manager one day. We love the marina side view. The blue wave has a tasty burger and the Monte Cristo was very good as well

Beautiful view. Walking distance to many places to eat. I would recommend the newer side of the hotel. The pools were nice. Nice bar & very pleasant bartender. Very convenient the bar to the lobby. The view to look at all the boats was amazing.

The room cleanliness was absolutely not acceptable. The first room was filthy, and didn't even look like it had been cleaned in I don't know how long, thus, we had to be moved. They did move us to a "better" location, and it was a nicer room, however, the carpet was so dirty that our feet were black. When was the last time the carpets were even cleaned.

I have stayed here numerous times over the years and its showing its age the room was dated and in need of updating, bathroom fixtures were broken and you could tell where the repairs were made instead of a replacement being made. Housekeeping is not thoroughly vacuuming, visible trash under the chairs in the room. when I asked for a different room I was told none were available but given the option to cancel my reservation without penalty, but where was i supposed to get a room in San Diego on a Friday afternoon with no reservation? The logic of this offer was baffling. This stay was very disappointing.

On the nightstands, in the bed- even made their way into my suitcase (kept off the floor). We told the manager but he didn't care. He didn't ask which room or any questions, as if this were a normal occurrence. We also pointed out the huge gap under the door to the outside that let water and whatever else inside the room. Again- no concern on management's part.

The view from the balcony was amazing, from sunset to sunrise! The bed was comfortable and my stay was great. I tried to book an extra night but they were fully booked, I see why lol. The location of the hotel was literally right across the street from the first attraction I booked which was amazing. I walked right across the street and I was there. I didn't get a chance to enjoy the pool due to my short stay, but I'll definitely check it out next time.

We stayed here just one night to attend a concert and it exceeded our expectations. A wonderful hotel with beautiful surroundings. Two beautiful pools and hot tubs overlooking the Marina. Close to downtown and other San Diego attractions, but tucked away in a peaceful, quiet location.

Was surprised when we checked in there is a daily fee of 18.00 a night for parking, also thought the plus was continental breakfast not so it's a Resturant you pay for breakfast. The room was nice with a view of the marina

I was Checked in By Alec at the front Desk. He was so nice and helpful and he surprised us with a beautiful Room. It was my first time at this Hotel and he really made are stay the best. I was so surprised by the upgraded rooms overlooking the Harbor. The location was so fun, right across the street from the pier. There should be more people like Alec working in hospitality. He was very pleasant at check in. We did appreciate the Hotel having the restaurant on site as well. I love the tiki torches! Keep up the great service ! We will be back for sure! Bad experience this stay on Labor Day weekend, power went out Friday and Saturday. Also original price I was quoted for rebooking on Labor Day weekend was not honored. Although service was great, no apologies, no coupons for future stays, nothing was offered for the inconvenience of no power on and off for the Labor Day weekend.

Pretty nice place still for its age. Our room was lovely with a balcony overlooking the marina. Shower head was broken and once we called about, it was replaced immediately. Room was clean had had coffee maker, small refrigerator and a microwave. Location was awesome. The lady at the front who checked us in was not welcoming at all.. bad start. But, the tall, dark-haired manager was super friendly and accommodating. You can't beat the view of the bay... One tip I have is to not waste your money on parking. We parked across the street every night which ended up being closer to our room than the parking lot at the far end of the hotel. Overall, very satisfied.

The front desk is helpful and friendly. The hotel is in a good location. The rooms are well equipped and very clean. The suite is particularly nice and comes with a full kitchen. My only gripe would be the $25 parking fee.

We had to wait for our room past check-in time. The rooms are nice and large, but could be cleaned better, especially the bed linens. Pillows are awful. Ice machine didn't work, parking is extremely limited and they need more luggage carts. We had one breakfast at the hotel restaurant which could have been much better. The oatmeal I had was the consistency of soup. We also ordered sandwiches to go for our sailing trip on The America, but they were soggy and they didn't follow our request regarding no condiments. Nice to have water on both sides of the hotel. We stayed in the Casa Del Mar building which has an elevator. Both pools are very small.

The hotel location and rooms were wonderful. The Blue Wave restaurant was great for lunch, happy hour and dinner. The restaurant staff were so friendly and helpful. The food was very good too. It's the most upscale Best Western I've stayed in. I'll be back.

The awesome king patio suite was spacious with a full kitchen, living room and separate bedroom. Vaulted ceilings and plantation shutters with lots of windows overlooking the marina. The private patio included two loungers and patio table with beautiful views of the marina. So relaxing and scenic. Wall air conditioning unit in the bedroom was a little noisy at night but wasn't bad. Overall we enjoyed our stay and will definitely return here.

Hotel is in a great location on the island and not a bad hotel. The room was a bit cramped with bulky furniture, which left almost no room for luggage to be anywhere. Bathroom was decent. Shower head was small and did not produce a decent spray. Mattress was way too firm for a comfy night sleep, but as a regular traveler, i've learned to suck it up. Cleaning staff only delivered clean towels during stay, and did not enter room every day, never refilled coffee or condiments.

I absolutely loved staying at the Best Western Island Palms Hotel on Shelter Island for the last four nights. There is so much to recommend it, I barely know where to begin. The location itself was gorgeous. Shelter Island is a strip of land (not really an island) jutting into San Diego's "Big Bay," with a view of the opening to the ocean on one side and a harbor of yachts on the other. At one tip of the island to the Southwest there were some big sea lions lounging about and occasionally jousting with each other. A short and beautiful walk up Shelter Island Drive takes you to a number of restaurants and coffee providers. The island is positioned such that you can get beautiful views of both the sunrise and the sunset, and I enjoyed both during my stay. It's a quick drive from there to Downtown, Coronado Island, Mission Bay, or even La Jolla, so as a jumping off place alone I'd recommend it. (By the way, I saw dolphins off Mission Beach and separately, off Coronado! Keep your eyes peeled - they're off the Pacific Coast all summer long.) There's a long strip of grass on the Big Bay side of the island with a paved walkway that lets you stroll the entire length of the island. There are a few sculptures - all beautiful - to explore here, and great picnicking areas as well. There are plenty of benches if you want to just sit and take in the bay as well. The Best Western Island Palms Hotel had that mysterious element - "charm" - that is missing from so many modern properties. Rather than a tall tower of cookie cutter rooms, this was a two-story property (and one-story in spots, such as where I stayed). Some of the units had patios or balconies, and nearly all had views of the water in one direction or another. There were two pools and two Jacuzzis. The pool nearest me had a rounded, asymmetrical shape that I found appealing. Both Jacuzzis were round and small, but big enough for several people, and the other pool was long and rectangular, with a fireplace (gas) at the end that was lit at night. I thought I could gather with other people there, but one family took it over and ignored anyone else who tried to sit nearby. I had a room right off the pool, and when I opened the door to enter the room for the first time, I was thrilled by its loveliness. The room had two queen beds under a slanted ceiling with wooden beams, a remarkably quiet air conditioner, and a ceiling fan if you wanted to cool off more quickly. The rooms had large plantation shutters, that I could open or close at will. The bathroom was truly beautiful - a dark reddish-brown polished granite graced the shower and sink area. There was no tub - just a shower - which was all I planned to use anyway. In the bedroom area, The HD TV sat on a long cabinet that served as a desk at one end and housed open shelves at the other, with just enough drawer space for my clothes and a much-used refrigerator for small food and beverage items. There was also a microwave, but I talked myself out of microwave popcorn and didn't use it. One minor annoyance: the room I was in was better suited to a King bed, because with two queens, it was a squeeze to get to the closet or the shutters on the window. But this was minor. One other note: I found a large, furry caterpillar on my wall there the last day. It didn't appear to be harmful, so I let it be. That was the only bug I saw in the room, thank goodness! Right outside my door was the gate to one of the two pools on the property. This curved pool had a truly "deep" end (8') as well as a shallow end. The pool was comfortably warm, as was the nighttime weather, so I swam one night until nearly 11 pm, the closing time for the pool (it opens at 8am, for those who enjoy an early dip). Just outside the pool were bicycles for rent (free to hotel guests), but I saw a father and son having some frustration with the phone app that made the bikes available. I didn't try it, but I saw many were missing during the day and back at night, so clearly people figured out how to get them that to work. There is a restaurant on the property, the Blue Wave Bar and Grille, that had killer fish and chips - the fries were as delicious as the freshly breaded cod. It was a little pricey, but I didn't mind because it was so tasty. I had a burger there that was not cooked to my specification (I asked for medium rare and it was well done) and was messy as heck to eat. I'd recommend skipping that, unless well-done and messy is your jam! The drinks were reasonably priced for the area. I loved the blood orange margarita and the pina colada (which you could order with an extra float of rum, if you wanted). Both came from pre-made slush mixes and were delicious! But it was really the people that worked on this property that made my stay fun and memorable. The man who checked me in gave me a choice of rooms but suggested the one near the pool and restaurant, and it was a good choice, as that's where I spent most of my time when I was not off exploring San Diego. All the waitresses at the restaurant were kind and solicitous (I didn't complain to them about the burger, btw). I never tried the coffee at the restaurant because there was free coffee in my room. The view from the restaurant deck of the marina was just wonderful. On Thursday night, a fire dancer performed at the main pool - two 15 minutes shows, 45 minutes apart. Before the show, people were handed Styrofoam-covered light sticks with three patterns. Between shows, I gave mine to a kid who had missed getting one. He was so happy - that made my day! Also between shows, the manager talked to me, and I expressed my pleasure at the place and the people. My only criticism, I told him, was that I should have been able to order food and a drink from my pool seat and not had to walk up to the restaurant. He said they had done that recently but were short staffed that week. I know personally I would have eaten more had that been available, so maybe it was good that it wasn't! ;-) But the manager then personally delivered to me, poolside, a pina colada, gratis, which was a super kind gesture! It was clear that the guest came first at this property, a practice sorely missing at most properties these days. You can't go wrong with a stay here, and it works for older singles (like me) or younger people with large families (like many of the other guests I interacted with). I can't wait to book a trip there next year. I don't usually return to a place I've been before unless there's a compelling reason. But there are a several reasons to return to this place. I just hope the same manager and staff are there when I return!

I'm disappointed in our 7 nights stay, our room smell and had dog hair everywhere...Not unagainst pets ....but for people like me that is allergic to cats and dogs its a big deal.....front desk try to move us to a room that we didn't want Because it smell like pets! We asked if they vacuum the room again MIKE was very kind and did his best but the room still smell and had dog hair. NEATNESS to say my husband didn't want me to complaint anymore so instead I suffer 7 nights of allergies......they never asked or even offer to mover us .....we paid over 2000 to stay I felt they should've had accommodated us.... Not to mentioned the view On the second floor a big Palm tree block the view of our room also......and if your going to have CUSHIONS should make sure THEY'RE AVAILABLE TO ALL ROOMS!

My wife was skeptical about staying at a Best Western. She thinks they're "budget hotels" and in the same category as some other 3 star lodging choices. That may have been the case in the past, but BW has completely turned things around the last decade or so. This place was great!! The grounds were manicured and clean, the rooms were clean and comfortable and the staff was friendly and helpful.

The hotel is right in the middle of Harbor Island. Super location. We visited the bar each night before going out to dinner and Jeff made some of the best Old Fashioned drinks we have ever had. My wife's martinis were perfect - Hats off to Jeff. We booked a room with 2 queen bedsw - and that is about all that can fit in the room. Seriously there was 10 inches of space between the edge of the bed and the closet doors. The room was very cramped and while the sheets and pillows were very comfortable, the mattress was worn down on one side and you could feel it slant down from left to right.

We've been coming to this hotel for years, through the pandemic this hotel has proven that it's worth it. We try to visit at least 3 times a year. The pool is wonderful, the beach is right across the street and the staff never disappoints. After a few months away we finally returned, the experience was amazing! They had fire dancing! My kids loved it. The staff handled out lights for the kids and we enjoyed. As we walked backed to our rooms we enjoyed cornhole and jenga. The dinner was amazing! This truly is a hidden gem!!!! Thank you Leidy for a great experience!!!!

We were originally booked at a place across the bay, and we were very unhappy. Looked this place up last minute on Trip Advisor, so glad we did, and that they had a room for 2 nights. Even though this is not on the beach the water views are amazing. If you are on the Marina side the views of the Marina are beautiful. We would like to stay again, and stay on the first floor at Casa Del Mar by the pool, great view and easy access to everything. Do not compare this place to a Best Western, this is nothing like you see. This place had 2 pools, a walking trail along the Marina and there is a walking trail in the front as well along the water too. It has great view of San Diego during the day and at night, absolutely stunning. We stayed in a 2 queen bed room. Many extras here, within walking distance to restaurants and a amphitheater where they had a concert both nights we were there. We are actually thinking about coming back to stay here. You can save a bit of money vs staying right on the beach, and honestly we'd come back to visit the culture and activities. Great value too.

This is our favorite hotel in the San Diego area! Wonderful staff and a wonderful full service hotel in a beautiful setting! This is a perfect choice for couples, family or even if you're traveling for business!

If you want to relax and get away this is the place. Love to sit on the balcony and drink my morning coffee or drinks and watch the boats go by or watch the sunset over the marina. The check in and check out is very easy and there is a restaurant on site.

Price is expensive your paying for the location and view from the rooms facing Marina, if facing the front the hotel is no big deal other than you can walk across to the water but isn't a beach to hang out and lay out, more for fishing off the dock.

Overall this hotel is in a great location, we have stayed here a couple of times and do plan on a return visit. It is a nice getaway for a couple and lots of restaurants and activities nearby. There is plenty of things to do and see in the surrounding areas and is also a nice place to just stay and relax and have a couples time away from the hustle and bustle of everyday life. It is also a great option for families to have a base camp for all of their San Diego excursions.

This is a perfect setting for relaxation, quiet, and ease of access to Point Loma, Ocean Beach, Airport, Old Town, Downtown, Balboa Park (15-18 min by car or uber/lyft), Sea World. There's walking, bicycling, relaxing by pool, hot tub, relaxing in room (marina view), great breeze, open windows with island feel, didn't move my car the entire 6 days. Lots of lovely people walking the area (often with their dogs) throughout the day and evenings, quiet, safe. Beautiful boats in the marina, Sea World fireworks at night. The restaurant in hotel by the pool is very good and reasonable $ - Both Pools and both hot tubs were well maintained and a pleasure. I had a corner suite in the Del Mar - upper floor - Room 510 (because I wanted to try out a suite for a future trip) - but I took a look at the double rooms overlooking the marina and they looked great - just perfect. If you're a fan of the non-elevator, non-high-rise experience when you're in San Diego, this is a terrific choice. Everyone at the hotel was friendly and made our stay fabulous.

We recently stayed at this property for a short Summer family getaway. We normally stay in Downtown San Diego and discovered this property on Shelter Island and decided to give it a try. Best decision ever! Shelter Island is a beautifully tucked away location and this property sits right in the marina with beautiful views throughout. Although the property seems to be a bit older than newer properties in downtown, its well kept and you can't beat the location and views. The staff was extremely friendly and accommodating which was nice. We look forward to our next visit very soon

A great getaway! Has everything you need so you don't need to drive your car. We had a lovely room with a balcony overlooking the marina. We took walks everyday. The hotel restaurant did take out as well as in person dining and it was delicious. We recommend the fish tacos! This was our 2nd visit and we definitely plan to return.

We love this place and when checking in the room wasn't what we wanted so Danny in the front desk found us a better room which made our day. Then my husband having some medical issues had to fly home - I stayed as we rented a home for our family vacation and they were coming down. In the morning when I went for breakfast- Robin - my waitperson was so kind and understanding when I told her what happened. She checked in with me often and it really helped reduce my stress. Great staff- great location - so don't hesitate to book!!

Only stayed one night but it was delightful relaxing pleasant tranquil enjoyed walking along the harbor we enjoyed the beach atmosphere and the entire experience was quite delightful. This was our second stay at the best Western shelter Island and we have another state scheduled for the end of this month. I am certain we will be back frequently.

We were only here for two nights, but it was wonderful. We were walking distance to many restaurants. The Park and walking trail at Shelter Island was wonderful. Old Town was just a few minutes away. Laid out on the beach at Shelter Island. Didn't want to be around crowded beaches so this fit the bill. I would stay here again.

Very comfortable beds and pillows. As a woman travelling alone, I stayed in Casa Marina and felt very comfortable and safe in an indoor setting. Beautiful location between the marina and the bay. The breakfast menu was excellent.

Stay was good. Had a nice time and the view was good also. I was a bit disappointed with the carpet cleanliness. The room size was ok, I was expecting a little bit more. Staff was good. Had a complain regarding the sliding mess door. It was falling down when ever we open or close it, reported that but was not fixed. That didn't really matter much but from a service point of view did not expect that. During checkout we mentioned that again and person at front desk mentioned he will look into it and get it fixed and I guess because of that the parking fees was waved for me, which was very nice of them. Felt a little of over priced for the room. But over all it was a nice and happy stay.

Very good location and beautiful view from room on the marina. Room nevertheless was old and the in-room breakfast was never received. Housekeeping on request only. They did however empty bins almost daily and we always had more than enough towels.

My family of 5 (4 adults, 1 young teen) stayed 2-nights at the end of a week long vacation to CA. We needed 2 rooms and at booking we knew that they'd be in different buildings, but with 2 adult kids in one of those that wasn't an issue. At check in I was told that our rooms were close to each other, which they were, but they were both 1st floor of motel style buildings so the doors were right along sidewalk and anyone walking by can see directly into rooms if blinds aren't closed. Worse was that these rooms do not match any of the pictures online and are very small. There was hardly enough space to open the door without hitting the first bed, the second bed is so close to the closet that it is difficult to use the closet, and there is barely enough space to lay a large suitcase flat to open it. In contrast to this, the bathroom is quite large with beautiful title, but there is a lot of wasted space. One of the light switches didn't work to operate the fan and lights over the shower and toilet, but I didn't want maintenance coming in during our short stay, and I expected housekeeping to have reported this already. The A/C unit ran constantly, and although blowing very cold air, it struggled to keep the room at a comfortable temp. Also the window blinds are wooden slats so they don't completely block out the sun in the morning. We had no issue finding parking spots in front of our building when we returned at night, the hotel was a short drive from everything we wanted to do in San Diego, and the restaurant hostess was extremely helpful on an evening when we had to eat quick to get back to the zoo before it closed. If we're ever vacationing in SD again, I might consider staying here again but that would only be if I could be sure I was getting rooms that look like the ones on the website.

BUYER BEWARE - absolute unethical scam property in my opinion and experience. We were here for the "big bay boom" 4th of July event. We drove 10 hours to be here. We booked our ~$600/night (+additional $25/night parking) suite well in advance. The Best Western booking site at the time offered just TWO OPTIONS for your paid choice of view, those were: the premium "Water view" (facing bay and fireworks) and lesser "Marina View" (facing a parking lot of boats). The huge firework display is on the bay side so of course we purposely booked the premium "water view" side instead of the marina side where there is no balcony fireworks show. When checking in, they switched the room and instead gave us a "Marina View" side suite without informing us of any issues. When we walked to our room we were of course surprised to see that our view was the parking lot of boats (marina side). This was not what we reserved, and not what we paid for. The staff admitted other guests had this same "problem" (bait-and-switch?). The staff attempted to propose that "water view" can mean either side. Keep in mind this is shelter ISLAND - so it's all water view - AND the water view side has a price premium over the marina side. The site manager, Nawaf, offered through his lobby attendant (at first he would not come to lobby) to compensate just $25 - the daily parking fee. This is laughable and it's very unfair to the front staff to put them in that position to relay these types of messages to customers in this situation - so I asked to speak to the manager directly. He (Nawaf) came out to the lobby and then offered $100+tax in addition to the $25 parking. I refused because IMO this is a clear bait and switch and they may have oversold rooms or sold my room for more to someone else for more hoping that I wouldn't complain when they pulled their "water view can be either side" scam. For that reason, I would absolutely advise all who read this to pick a different location. If we knew we wouldn't have the room we reserved, then we wouldn't have selected this location for our 4th of July vacation. We would have selected one of the dozen other options we were looking at for this event like Bay Club. It's really a shame that this has to be my initial experience and resulting review of the property. I will be posting the same review in comments section of YouTube reviews that suggested we stay here as well, since the (paid? comped?) Youtube reviews are what influenced us to choose this property over others.

We always come to San Diego for the 4th, this was our 1st time staying here and we absolutely loved it. Rooms are very spacious and clean, the view was great and the breakfast at the restaurant on site was delicious and wonderful. We will definitely be staying here on our next trip to San Diego!!!

$25 to park in addition to the already expensive overpriced small room. When you open the door it runs the corner of the bed it is so close. The room is EXTREMELY small and very hot when we checked in ar 1230 in the morning just to get a little sleep before heading back out.

This is a very beautiful, clean, well kept hotel across the street from the water. The rooms are well cleaned and the coffee maker is well stocked. I've always had great experiences with Best Western & this 1 exceeded my expectations. I HIGHLY recommend this Best Western for your stay.

The room was clean, well laid out. Very quiet at night. Nice view of the harbor. Conveniently located - we were able to walk to several restaurants during our stay. No complaints about the room. When it was time to fly home the hotel was a 12 minute Uber ride to San Diego International Airport (even with traffic).

I would go back in a moment, didn't want to leave and well be back. Views were wonderful, I would stay on the Marina side next time. The room we stayed in had an extension that blocked 1/2 our view, which I didn't like. Make sure you ask for a full view room if you want a water view.

This is the 2nd time we've stayed here. The view of the marina is really nice. It's clean and comfortable. The service is very good. The location is great because it's away from the touristy hotels on hotel circle. Overall, it's a great place to stay.

This location could be so much more. The room was dirty. Earring in shower found by my child, scrunch with hair onto of the lamp, trash and dirt in the pull out sofa. Our feet were lack after walking around in the room for a few mins. Light comes in at sunrise... no sleep .. loud! Doors slamming, dumpster bins banging, parking is terrible... and they charge. Don't recommend end

Better than the pictures on their website imply. Far from the hustle and bustle of hotels near convention center but with easy access to all the sites and activities in SanDiego! Convenient parking, relaxing pools, nice patio for outdoor dining and beverages.

It was very nice hotel in location and view and clean and i thinking to back there with my family in the future the staff there was friendly and the area was very quiet and safe I saw the security around there which very important to put security for any hotel so the residents will feel more safe just I think it's not need to put more parking fees

I will be back ,overall good stay my kids were happy . The rooms are clean, a little outdated ,very 80's but still nice . Some of the channels on cable did not work . They could have better toiletries their shampoo conditioner was horrible but we made it work . The views are amazing worth the stay very peaceful and relaxing

My hubby and I stayed for 2 nights at this lovely hotel in May. Clinton at the front desk checked us in and was really nice and friendly. The room was very clean. We had a cute balcony where we sat and watched the boats sail by. This was our first time staying there and it will not be our last. We loved this hotel and it's location on Shelter Island. Yes, it is an older hotel, but it's quaint and has charm. It was sufficient for a weekend getaway for my hubby and I. We were very pleased with our stay.

Don't let them check you into Bldg "A" as the critters are on the floors, bed, in drawers, bathroom... The floors, shower and area outside of my room weren't cleaned adequately prior to my check-in with garbage in the garden area and someone's old drink left on an air conditioner

I love this hotel! Great location - in close proximity to some of the major attractions in San Diego. Nice view anywhere we looked. Guest Services was efficient too. Whenever we asked for something, we got them within a reasonable time. Our suite was also very spacious, perfect size and layout.

We stay here every year to visit family while attending training sessions and have never had a complaint about anything to do with this property, rooms clean, well appointed and lovely views. Walking paths along the marina side and walkway, grass and sandy beach, fishing pier across the street. Can watch both navy and cruise line ships as well as sailboats and jets leaving North Island Naval Air station. Fun yet pool and saunas for relaxing

Parking $18. If you get back late no parking spots, then have to park across street public parking. Homeless there. They say no dogs, not true they are everywhere, left in room barking all hours. Light switches in room that control nothing. No one cleans room , staying 5 nights had to call for cleaning , towels, toilet paper etc

Unbeatable location and helpful staff. Nice grounds and amenities. Our room was badly in need of a refresh. Peeling wallpaper, sticking shower door, and sagging worn-out mattress. Included a kitchenette, which was quite handy, but missing some needed drinkware/dinnerware.

WE have stayed here several times, but for odd reasons we booked at the Dana across town, that really did not work out on this trip, so we checked out the BW Island Palms to switch rooms. They were super friendly and showed us a nice suite with a partial view of the bay. The Dana was kind enough to let us out of the rest of our reservation and we had a wonderful time at a nice accessible suite at the BW Island Palms. Room was great, house keeping was nice, restaurant was good, they have a DIY laundry room. A great time overall.

The pros: bed was super comfortable, location was great, restaurant on site had good food and friendly staff, property was safe and well landscaped. Cons: our room was dark, poor lighting, main pool was small and very few lounge chairs we couldn't use that pool, in general not much pool space. 2nd pool on site down the path had more chairs. Overall I might stay again if I had a better brighter room.

The room was small - to be expected in an older property, but still not a good thing. Worse, since we booked through TripAdvisor Plus, we were placed in a room facing the street on the ground floor. The property staff mentioned that 'since we had booked through a third party', they were doing this. No information was available prior to our arrival about the $18 parking charge (either on TripAdvisor or the BW website), but that's not much of a surprise when dealing with properties like this. The ice machines are well hidden, even though the soft drink vending machines are well marked - ice being free and drinks costing money, I believe. Desk staff were slow at check-in, though polite (other than the mild scolding about not booking direct). Parking stalls are designed for compact cars, and our SUV barely fit. The tissue dispenser in the room was empty and no replacement box was to be found. Fresh paint was in evidence, but the painters hadn't properly stripped or sanded the walls, leaving peeling paint beneath the new. There's no 'plus' to this Best Western, other than its location.

Visited in May 2022 with a large family group. The hotel was clean and rooms seem to have been recently renovated. At the time there was no cleaning service, but they were very attentive bringing towels as needed. Great views, but not a lot nearby.

We had stayed here based on our timeshare trade. We were told that we would have a nice room and king size bed when I called 2 weeks in advance to . Well, we got the king size bed (very comfy by the way) but our room had broken window shutters, tv did not work, we were looking at the parking lot, was just run down, and helicopter noise all day/night due to Navy Seal training across the street. We asked to be moved but was told they were booked til the weekend. They would contact us Sat if they had another room. A day before we were to checkout, and we never were called to switch rooms, we were told the hotel showed that no one was in our room and we had to go downstairs NOW to give them a credit card. So we go downstairs, give them the timeshare information with receipt and let them know were were unhappy anyway but were leaving the next day. About an hr later, they found "us" in another room. They gave the room we were to switch to, to someone else!!!! I asked for a receipt and she accidently printed a receipt showing what the 7 day cost was and it was LESS than what we paid. We got NO refund from them, no comp, no nothing for them giving our room away. We do not recommend this hotel. We plan on visiting San Diego again but will never stay here again or at any Best Western Hotel. When I got home, I called Best Western Corporate who blew it off.

The Front Office Manager had a "I Cant" attitude. I had asked for early checking and when we arrived at 2:30PM we were told by the FOM that the room was still being clead and it should only be a few minutes. That was not a problem. We walke around the hotel to look around and when we went by our future room we noticed that it was clean. We went back to the front desk at 3:25PM and asked if we could gain access. He told us that the room was still out of service. Turns out that they were holding us up so they could show the room to a prospective event client and that they needed to wait until they got the all clear from the banquet manger before they could release the room. Turns out the room was shown over an hour earlier and that there was not hold on the room. The FOM failed to communicate with his staff which caused us to wait for no reason. I am currently the Director of IT for a company which has a Portfolio of 8 Embassy Suites and 2 Marriott hotels. In the 10 years of my association I have never seen less communication with staff then what I saw this past weeken. This was not Hospitality deserving of your hotel. These are my thoughts.

We have stayed on Shelter Island previously (at Humphreys) and decided to try Island Palms this time. The front desk was extremely helpful with making sure we had the correct room (even gave us an upgrade) as well as nearby recommendations. The room in the Casa Del Mar building was clean and comfortable and the view to the marina was fantastic from the rooms as well as balcony. I would easily recommend the hotel as well as return again.

This hotel has beautiful rooms close to all the restaurants. The setting and views of the Marina are wonderful and it's off the main road so it feels more relaxing. I will stay at the hotel again. The front desk is amazing and very helpful!!

Danny at the front desk makes this marina property our go to in San Diego. Always helpful and accommodating. Centrally located on Shelter Island and the ground well maintained. Blue Wave restaurant on property always delicious with a great patio overlooking the marina.

I have catered over 300 weddings in my life. An I have to admit, mine was my favorite! After re-planning our wedding 4 times due to COVID, we finally made it happen and at the perfect place. Best Wester Island Palms Shelter Island! To say that the bride had absolutely ZERO stress about the event would be a lie, however anything the hotel could do to alleviate anything, they did and exceeded expectations. Everything from them was spot on! The room was beautiful without the overkill of flowers. Some simple orchids was all i added. Brides everywhere, if you want a relaxing wedding call Madison at the BW! I cannot say enough about the food and service. I never went for a tasting, my bridesmaids and I had stumbled upon the hotel for my bachelorette weekend and had the Salmon and Short Ribs, they were amazing, so dinner was picked. Which reminds me all of this was planned after August! A December wedding is tough, sometimes there is rain. The inside backup plan was beautiful. I had bought some simple fabric, they had an arbor left from a previous wedding and there we had it. Of course it did not rain and we were able to get fabulous pictures outside! There are a few important things at a wedding. Is the food hot? Are the drinks cold? Are there smiles on everyone's faces? We had all of that and more. Madison Bear, you MADE my day so simply perfect. I never want to stay anywhere else. Between, Danny, Theresa, Summer, The chef I never met (usually you do as the bride but it was all perfect I did not have to), and so many more I cannot remember your names at the moment. I am very sorry. But I will see you soon!!

We checked in and when we got to our room (2nd floor) we had a Marina view. We called the front desk and they moved us to our Water view room we booked. No problem at all just a little mix up. The room was clean and very comfortable. When you open the door to the balcony with the breeze from the ocean was amazing! We enjoyed having the opportunity to be able to sit outside on the balcony with the cool breeze. The swimming pool area was great and they keep the water about 80degrees. I do know they offer beach bikes but we did not use them. The property was very clean and staff was friendly. I do have a small complaint though. Our room was a two bed with plenty of room the bathroom was also big, but we had a walk in shower and there wasn't any place to put your shampoo/body wash except on the shower floor. I wish they would provide some type of shelving unit or small wood bench so your not always having to bend down. Other than that our stay was very pleasant and quiet. If your looking for a quieter place (hotel) instead of in town this would be one of those places. Only 15min away from USS Midway, Mission Beach, Liberty Station. There will always be ups and downs of places people stay at which I get. I recommend Island Palms Hotel & Marina. Also there is and $18 a night for your vehicle. I know some people just park across the street. Enjoy!!

I've stayed at The Bay Club and Humphrey's before and enjoyed both. Always wanted to try The Island Palms and finally got around to it. Check in experience was okay. The staff was efficient though not especially warm. Nothing bad but didn't especially impress me either. I stayed in room 418 in the Casa Del Mar building. It was a spacious studio suite or mini-suite with two queen beds, a kitchenette with a full size refrigerator, and a bathroom with some pretty blue tile. There was a back door that opened to a patio sitting area and beautiful view of the marina. It's also close to the pool, which means it could get a little on a warm summer day. Since it was April, though, there wasn't that much activity. The room was very clean and well maintained. The decor could use a little more character. It's a bit generic but not that big a deal. Still a really nice room. This is a huge property with three different buildings, a restaurant, a garden area, and a walking path by the marina. I didn't try the restaurant, but I've noticed that it gets a lot of good reviews. I think I slightly prefer The Bay Club over Island Palms, but I would highly recommend both places, as well as Humphrey's. Now I just have to try Kona Kai.

Best Western Island Palms Hotel & Marina has been one of our favorite places to stay for many years. it is so relaxing to stay and walk around Shelter Island and enjoy the area and it is so close to many other wonderful sites in San Diego, CA

Impressive location, great views, nice neighborhood!!! The hotel is a bit old but clean and comfortable. Good Free WiFi, nice and friendly staff, great pool and tub area, nice bar and BBQ with great views. On the other hand, the telephone didn't worked, its VERY noisy, you can hear all your neighbors, cars and specially military planes and helicopters all the time. MY ROOM'S DOOR NEVER LOCKED EVEN THOUGH I TOLD THEM! Room 106 can be just pushed to be opened. The continental breakfast is VERY poor, 30 mins before closing there was no milk, no juice and no coffee!! Also the menu at the BBQ area and restaurant bar is VERY expensive considering the quality of the food.

If your looking to relax and unwind this is the perfect place for it. From the rooms to the grounds and pools everything is here for you. It's a short drive to downtown or all of the other many attractions in S.D.. On the other hand I would like to keep this Hotel to myself and family so stay somewhere else. LOL.

We booked this place through RCI to celebrate our 25 year wedding anniversary and were horribly disappointed. The king bed was very hard and uncomfortable and the sound barriers are nonexistent. We could hear everything our upstairs neighbors were doing. It sounded like they were training elephants to jump off the bed and it went on late into the night then again at 4am. We complained to the office several times and heard nothing but excuses. We were also told this was a king with a view but all we had a view of was the parking lot and garbage cans. The room was also by the entry to the building. So every time someone went in or out we knew about it. We probably won't be back to San Diego for a while but we will never be back to this place.

Clean, bright and airy rooms. Quiet comfortable hotel with marina and water views available. Ask for the Casa Marina building which is the newest and has an adjacent parking structure. Casa del Mar also offers delightful marina views (and a small pool with romantic fireplace seating), but is older and a little musty smelling. Great sidewalks for walking or jogging. Nesting osprey with young in April 2022.

I am a fan of BW Plus hotels and this one did not disappoint. Great location along the Marina and across from downtown and the ship channel. Nice restaurant and bar in the main building. If you sail this is the place to be. Only nit is the walls were a bit thin (at least in our room) .

Made a reservation with a king bed and marina view, Got stuck in a room that was dirty, the shower didn't work, the phone didn't work I had to walk to the front desk in the rain. The remote didn't work correctly. I am a Diamond Select Best Western member but at this hotel this means nothing. If you decide to stay at this hotel, make sure you call to be sure you're are guaranteed you are going to get the room you requested. Because this hotel doesn't pre assign rooms for Best Western members

location on Shelter island was terrific. Bikes are available for free. Pools are lovely. Res't by the pool is very good, so are the drinks! We stayed in a large Casa de Mars condo on the third floor with a wonderful view of the fishing pier and bay. Do not get a 1st floor room: no view. Will come back next march for sure!

Our family of three stayed here (first time) in March 2022. Got a suite so that adults could be separate from child. The Pros: --very nice room, spacious and comfortable. --wooden blinds kept most light out while sleeping --two bathrooms in the 1 bedroom suite --quiet!! --Lovely private patio --Blue Wave restaurant was delicious and the hostess in the mornings (Maria, I think) was so helpful and friendly --All staff we encountered were very accomodating. --Gorgeous property overall, with great views and foliage everywhere. --Although the hotel is not new or newly renovated as far as we could tell, it was overall very clean and in good shape (from what we saw) --Lovely walkway along the marina between the buildings --AC & fans worked well in our experience --Live music on the weekend was great at the restaurant! The "could be improved": --Upon late check in, the kitchenette trash contained previous guests' garbage, including multiple wine and beer bottles. --There were sheets for the pull-out sofa, but no blankets or pillows. --We arrived after 11 pm and had crossed a few time zones.. housekeeping was knocking the next morning before 9. (No D-N-D sign was provided.) When I asked if they could come back later (in an hour or so), they seemed put-off and then did not come back at all... for the rest of the stay (6 days). So we started our stay with a full trash can and one towel per person and it stayed that way. We ran out of kleenex the last day, and were getting low on TP. They did knock on the door the very last day of our stay right before we checked out, so I guess they did eventually remember us! (Had we stayed longer, I'd have called the desk to ask about this - but wasn't a huge deal.) --Main pool was closed for a few days during our stay (only small pool was open and it was packed each time we saw it). --Restaurant did not have muffins or pastries half of the days we inquired --- though they were on the regular menu. --Shower was on an adjustable rail, with max height very low (great for a person 5' or so but not much taller). Ours would spray out into the bathroom no matter what we did. We found we had to hold the sprayer while showering to avoid making a mess. (It shot me in the face the first morning - what a wake-up call!) Overall, very nice experience for our first family trip to S.D. We would stay here again in the future.

We stay here about every 4 months. This visit was great as usual. Teresa, Stacey, and Shawn were excellent as they always are. The only issues were the hot tub in the Casa Del Mar pool was overloaded with chemicals and for some crazy reason the Clam Chowder was taken off the menu. This was one of the better offerings. Besides that it was our usual excellent visit. Please put the Chowder back on the menu.

Overall we had a great view from our room. This location was quiet. The only issue we had was the A/C unit was old with the thermostat located on the outside of the unit. I will be going back to this location again and I do recommend this hotel

Needs some renovation. Overall, clean property with friendly staff. Parking is limited but there is public parking across the street. Nice views of the bay. Good value for the money. We arrived late and our room was taken so they gave us a better one and comped the parking!

Had a great time.. this hotel has a great location, close to attractions. Beautiful views of the bay and marina. It was great to be able to wind down and fish off the pier. The room was clean and very nice. Very friendly staff.

I would like to acknowledge & praise Alec for a job well done. The fact that Alec helped me out, was compassionate and understanding, and went above and beyond is a testament to his character and professionalism. He is an excellent employee. .I have been staying at this property since 1981 and consider it the only place to stay when in San Diego. Couple the Island Palms with Point Loma Seafood Grotto around the corner and you have a trip to tell your friends about.

First off, the room was not ready when it was time for check in, had to wait for over an hour. When we did get the room, it was hard to open and close the door, gap under door as well. Beds were comfy, bathroom ok. I've stayed here before several years and it wasn't in bad shape.

We decided to take a stop in San Diego and received an email from Best Western highlighting the BW Island Palms location…so we decided to try it. It was a perfect peaceful location. We had a very private Marina view room. We enjoyed to hotel Blue Wave restaurant and several other walkable restaurants nearby during our stay. Walking along the Marina and across the street to the bay was a perfect vacation surprise. We'll definitely be back.

Start off this is wonderful location and our military discount was good. We booked 4 nights and are Diamond Plus members. The rooms are small no big however, attention to detail are bad. When you walk in all you smell is distinct mold walk in the bathroom the wallpaper is moldy and peeling off the wall the shower is Rusty the toilet is old and it's only foot off the ground. The carpet is very old and feel so dirty on your feet that I put towels on the floor that I had brought for the pool so that we did not have to touch the carpet with bare feet. There is a microwave there is a refrigerator and you will pay $18 a day to park none of this is a big deal. The bad is we are handed towels daily that are shredded that look worse than something I would wash my car with that's a problem and on the 4th day early in the morning we found cockroaches in the bathroom and then around refrigerator area. I can deal with all the other things because I truly enjoyed the property but the moldy smell and Cockroaches we will not ever except. I did write a review and management NEVER responded back. That's not good either.

We were in room 139, Marina View with 2 queen beds. The little patio that looked out on the marina was a highlight. It was nice having microwave and mini fridge. The beds were worn out. My biggest complaint was the free bicycles. The two that were left when we checked them out were for a small girl and the other had a flat tire

This is a classic property with an excellent location.. Very clean and service was exceptional. Staff was friendly and always helpful. Views were spectacular. Grounds were spotlessly kept and amenities exactly as advertised.

The shower head and tub faucet was totally discolored so that I didn't want to use it. The sink basin had two large cracks. Dust around the back of the side tables.... Enjoyed the location but the room itself was not satisfactory.
