Best Western Plus
On several visits to The Marina Gateway Hotel I have never received anything but the highest level of professionalism and respect from the staff at this hotel. I highly recommend this hotel to anyone looking for a great location, great experience and great facility. They are a huge asset to the Best Western organization.
Just off the highway the hotel is convenient for travelling into Mexico or to San Diego, downside is its a bit noisy, what with the railway on the other side. But such is the cost of convenience. Rooms are spacious and clean, unfortunately mine suffered from a noisy a/c unit. So a good ambassador for the brand.
Very nice hotel. I was traveling alone and staff was very accommodating to move me from a ground floor room. The hotel was very clean. The rooms, common areas, and grounds were very well kept. It was in a good general location.
Great hotel off highway 5 but just 10 to Gaslamp and other attractions. I am a Best Western member so I will tell you I have stayed in many of this chain hotels, this is one of the best. You should have no complaints from this location. Rated excellent on hotel.com, I agree Hotel staff was great very clean
super clean, friendly staff. i booked a room thinking it had a balcony, when it turns out that it hadn't i asked to change it to one that have, and the front desk lady i believe her name is Cecilia changed it immediately which is super nice of her to find me another room that quick. definitely recommend this place for the outstanding staff.
My boyfriend and I took a last minute getaway trip for his birthday to San Diego. Found this room on hotels com and it was an additional 15% off so I booked it instantly. The location is good. The staff was very friendly and nice ..the rooms were clean and the lobby was decorated very nicely for the holidays! Will definitely think about Best Western when need a place to stay .
Awesome customer service. Mr. Alquin and Ms. Cecilia are very helpful. Needed to check in earlier than usual and they are both very accommodating. The room is very clean, homie and most of all affordable. It's highly recommended. Thank you so much!
The Marina District of National City is relatively new. The Sycuan Tribe of San Diego County used their casino profits to restore this area since their ancestors used to fish here. This BEST WESTERN PLUS is very nice, with a simple elegance. The Interior and outside grounds are very nice. The parking lot is HUGE, plenty of room for larger vehicles. NO RESTAURANT, No continental breakfast. Next door is "Goodies" restaurant, which is like a Denny's or
The room was beautiful, the 12 o'clock check out was very thoughtful. The customer service provided by the 2 gentleman at the front desk was SUPERB! The grounds were perfectly kept and the room was exceptionally clean and comfortable.
Super fast check in... friendly staff.. the bed was super comfy... and check out was just as easy. Overall had a great experience, plus the location is great. Next door there's also a cool restaurant/bar with live music... oh and the parking was great. Usually in San Diego it's super hard to find parking and expensive... was neither. Really enjoyed my stay.
I have been a returned customer since 2016. I stay in this hotel every time I am in San Diego for business and personal. I want to thank the front desk staff: Oliver, Cecilia and Alquin for providing me with excellent customer service. Thank you for going above and beyond in providing me with excellent customer service. I initially booked for one night but ended up to stay another night. Kudos for Oliver that I was able to get a room for another night and ensuring that I have an excellent stay. The housecleaning also very accommodating and really clean my room. The hotel is meticulously clean, well kept, modern lobby without smell of bleach or Lysol. The rooms are really clean and spacious, comfortable bed, clean bathroom with soft towels, wifi, free lighted parking and safe. It is very comfortable. I will definitely recommend this hotel to family and friends and will stay here again. Thank you Best Western Plus Marina for taking excellent care of your customers and for having an awesome staff. Thanks again and see you guys next time.
This hotel has horrible customer service with no regard for ones' safety, time, or well being overall. They cancelled my reservation that was already paid for one hour before we arrived. We booked through hotels.com and had the message "Your reservation is guaranteed and all paid for." I'm sure they sold our room at a higher rate and therefore cancelled us with no regard to the fact that we had travelled here from another state. The service from hotels.com was even worse. I would never consider staying here again.
We stayed at the Best Western Plus on our recent 3-day trip to San Diego. The hotel was clean and comfortable, with all the expected amenities. Hotel staff were helpful and friendly, and the free on-site parking and continental breakfast were a bonus. The room was well appointed and had coffee, fridge, a nice-sized TV and was a decent size so we didn't feel cramped for space. Overall a very nice stay!
Had a great 4 day stay here. My son and I stayed here for the Miramar airshow weekend. The staff went above and beyond for me. I made my reservation 2 months in advance on hotels.com and guaranteed the reservation with my Mastercard. Well someone hacked my cc # shortly thereafter and my card was canceled. I forgot that my reservation was made using that card and on the day I was to arrive Alquen who works for the hotel was kind enough to call me and let me know he couldn't process the reservation because my card was no longer valid. He took my new card # and saved my reservation. Good thing because they were sold out. I know that any other hotel would've of just canceled the reservation and not called me to reconfirm. I would not have found out until I arrived there at midnight. Thank you Best Western Plus Marina for looking out for your customers and helping me dodge a huge bullet. Aside from that the hotel is meticulously clean and well kept. Very modern and very comfortable. Plenty of free parking and in a very safe neighborhood. Thanks again and see you next year.
My daughter and I recently stayed at this Best Western when we were in San Diego. This hotel was very quiet and comfortable. The hotel has a swimming pool, putting green, laundry, Fitness room, free wifi, and computer room. There is also an ATM located in the lobby. The hotel has a great location, 10 minutes to the zoo, 10 minutes to downtown, 10 minutes to Coronado, 20 minutes to La Jolla beach, 20 minutes to Tijuana. We booked the hotel for $85 per night on hotels.com, the Best Western website had it listed at $185 per night. Next time we are in San Diego, we will definitely be staying here again!
My family and I had stayed here during of August. Had booked 2 standard rooms. The rooms were very clean and spacious. They had upgraded one of the rooms to an executive room-we appreciate the gesture. We arrived early and requested if we could do an early check-in. The staff who attended to us was very welcoming and he managed 1 room for us to check-in early. One minus point about the rooms were the pillows-it needs a replacement; I suggest they look into it. They have this restaurant outside-they have very limited breakfast options for vegetarians but overall its manageable for a short stay. Also, the hotel is in National City but has easy access to highway taking you to the main attractions, so we had no problems there. Overall very happy with the stay, great value for money and the staff were friendly and welcoming. I would recommend this hotel.
All the staffs are excellent with excellent service. We have nothing to complain about our staying. Well kept, clean and tidy. The room is spacious and clean. Good Wi-fi connection in the room. Location is good and convenient, not on a busy traffic street and not far away from public transit.
I was 100% satisfied over all with my stay, the accommodations, and experience with the staff. the property is lovely and very well kept. The pool is on a smaller scale but the area is pleasant relaxing, clean and well kept.
Our family of 3.5 recently stayed here. I was initially very nervous about staying at a Best Western, worried that it wouldn't be clean, comfortable or conveniently located. But this location was all of the above. The hotel was very clean and the staff was friendly and helpful. During our trip we visited the San Diego Zoo, Mission Bay, La Jolla, Old town, Seaport Village and few other San Diego attractions and I don't think anything was more than a 20 minute drive, if that. This hotel is right near the freeway. There are many fast food restaurants right up the street -Chick fil a, In and Out Burger, Denny's Chipotle and more. There is also a restaurant on the hotel property, across the driveway (Goodies), it's ok food but we only went once. We enjoyed the hotel pool and took advantage of the gym as well. I would recommend this for a family looking to take in the sites of San Diego. We didn't spend much time in the room except to sleep but it was quiet and comfortable. I honestly wouldn't stay there if we were to take a trip as a couple, I prefer a higher end hotel with more amenities. But this was perfect for what we came to San Diego to do, explore.
Freeway close and not far from the border. It was clean and quiet with sufficient parking and a restaurant just across the parking lot. It is not far from downtown, Coronado and the various places tourists want to visit.
Great hotel with an exceptional customer service. The people at the front desk are always willing to help and provide you with alternatives to your traveling needs. The rooms are very clean with a nice little fridge, a safe box and spacious enough to accommodate a family of four (three in our case). Seaport is just 7 minutes away (driving) and in general terms everything is 15 minutes away by car (even the airport). The parking is included and the WIFI is too. I believe that this hotel really offers great value for your money.
We had another great stay at this hotel. The places we wanted to visit in San Diego were conveniently close by to this location. The staff was very welcoming and friendly. The front desk staff were so nice to us, especially Cecilia. She went out of her way to make sure we had an enjoyable experience. We appreciate all she's done for us. We look forward to our next stay here!
The management team are always friendly and a very helpful management team. I will definitely visit again and recommend to my friends. Best Western plus is a very affordable choice and in a very centrally location in San Diego.
This is a beautiful hotel, with an exceptional staff, located outside of the hustle and bustle of San Diego, but so convenient to the freeway and trolley. Super clean and FREE parking! The pool is so refreshing with a nice hot tub under palm trees! Near by restaurants.
rhe rooms are quite large and comfortable. there is no breakfast or food option except vending machines but there is a diner nect to the hotrl that is okay. parking is easy. staff is friendly... acually better than the usual BE
This hotel was well maintained and well organized. We checked in 5 minutes early and had no line to wait in. Check out was a breeze. Trolley stop a half mile away in you want to experience more of San Diego's attractions or sights.
Good choice if you want to stay close to San Diego but don't wanna pay high prices or be in the middle of party central. We encountered some issues with our room & the manager, Manny, immediately took care of us. He understood great customer service. The pool looked nice & I liked the free parking & free wifi. Also nice were the in-room mini fridge, coffee maker, & microwave. The king suite we had had a balcony & was spacious. The location is a bit remote but also quiet & super close to the freeway. It was a 15-20 minute drive to downtown SD.
Needed somewhere as a landing spot to visit the zoo, SeaWorld, etc. Was able to find this hotel for <$130 a night which is cheap considering SD hotels are extremely overpriced. Some pros and cons: Pros: Staff - probably the most impressive hotel staff I can recall in recent memory. These guys are on point and extremely helpful, courteous, pleasant, however you want to frame it. Awesome to see people constantly on their "A" game. Keurig machine - my daughter loved the self-service Keurig machine and probably drank too much hot chocolate, but was nice to see this offered to guests. Swimming pool - nice and shaded with plenty of towels and seats to go around. Hot tub is one of the warmer hot tubs I've been in in quite some time; you could boil pasta in it (please do not attempt). Free and plentiful parking - Never had a problem getting a parking spot close to the building. With so many places that charge outrageous prices for parking, great to see it offered for free. Location - It only takes 30 seconds to hop on I-5 and put yourself at the airport, zoo, Sea World, etc. in 15 short minutes. Cons: Pillows - these are almost like couch pillows in that they're squared vs. rectangle. Rooms luckily had a bunch of these, but first time I've seen them in a hotel and would prefer the traditional type. Showerheads - these are designed to be low-pressure/low-flow, but purpose is defeated when it takes twice as long to take a shower trying to get shampoo/conditioner out of your hair. Really wish they would ditch these things to get something more functional. Noise - you can mostly attribute this to obnoxious guests, but I heard people stomping above my room at 6am and guests loudly talking/slamming doors at midnight. I was lucky and didn't face the restaurant that has loud music nightly on the weekends or I would have gone crazy. This was probably a bi-product of being on the first floor in the main hallway where traffic is high; I would recommend you ask for a top floor close to a corner to help mitigate this. Location - you might be wondering why I have this as a pro and con. The con here is that the area is a bit desolate and aside from the restaurant next door, there's nothing else nearby that's really walkable so expect to trek to find some other options. You also can't really see the marina itself, just a wetland and some industrial so it's not overly scenic
This is a great place to stay for San Diego attractions like Mission Bay, Sea World, and Petco Park. This Best Western is right off of Interest 5. This place is nice and clean and the staff is very good and nice. You can see them always working to ensure that their guests feel welcomed and would enjoy their stay.
If I could give Best Western Plus Marina Gateway Hotel ZERO stars I would. Back in February '18 I booked a room for me, my wife, and 3 kids for July 27th - July 29th. I called the 27th about 5pm while still en route to advise of a late checkin and was told the was no need to advise. We stopped for dinner and arrived at the hotel tired just after 11pm to be told rudely by the young man at the front desk that they had tried to preauthrize my card the that morning (unusual practice that was never disclosed, it's not in any of the disclosures when the reservation wad made, but whatever). Apparently when there was a problem they tried calling me (100% BS). Well the was no preathurization on my card, and had they called me I would have more than happily provided my card #, but that didn't happen. Instead they CANCELED my reservation. There was nothing else in the San Diego area available. I tried every Motel 6 and Super 8 out there. Thanks to Best Western Plus my family of 5 (including my 7 month old baby) had to sleep in our car that night prior to walking around Seaworld the following day and then drove out of San Diego after SeaWorld making what was supposed to be a fun and relaxing weekend into a very stressful and tiring situation. The rude unprofessional front desk guy didn't give a damn. I'm fairly certain they knew they could charge some poor desperate soul double my rate so they screwed me over to make themselves more money. AVOID this sorry excuse for a hotel. I will NEVER book with them again no matter the cost. TERRIBLE business practice. I doubt they'll read this or give a damn about their customers, but hopefully it saves somebody from an awful experience like I had. I'm not sure what they did was even legal, but I guess they can make up their own undisclosed policies to hide behind. Thanks for ruining my family vacation Worst Western!
We stayed at this hotel over the weekend and it was great. The staff is super nice. The pool and spa is nice, the rooms are clean and it is in a great area with lots of restaurants and fast foods. There are no hidden fees and the parking was free. We will be staying here again!!
The motel is nice and clean and the front desk staff were all very friendly and helpful. The motel is right next to a shipyard, railroad tracks, and a trucking company. The only close restaurant Goodies was ok. Great motel, not a great location or easy access to anyplace else. Only gave it a 3 because of location and access to restaurants if you don't have a car.
although I didn't use very many of the hotel amenities, this is probably in my personal top 5 hotels that I have stayed with. the staff was friendly and helpful and the rooms are modern. very conveniently off the interstate.
Have stayed here numerous times when in town for meetings. In June had a Church group of 62 with me. Every part of the experience with Marina Gateway was flawless. Ample parking which is rare in San Diego.. Highly recommend hotel and staff.
Having written many positive reviews in my day, I'll take a moment to reveal the negative experience I had while staying overnight on July 4th, 2018 intending to WARN future guests.
Was having a rough morning with family arguments aplenty during checkout on 7/5/18... and realized several hours into the day that I'd left behind my small rolling ice chest in the room. I called the desk around 1:30pm to inquire, and was informed that "Housekeeping has not completed their rounds and no information is available at this time" regarding my cooler whereabouts, but was asked to "Please call back later at the end of the day".
Interesting. So I called back that afternoon at 4:30pm to then be told, "I apologize but our system is temporarily down... you will need to call back later." At that point, I requested the clerk to actually notate this was my third attempt to locate my ice chest and please take down my name, number, room #. Never received a call back.
Called again the following morning at 10am on 7/6/18 to be placed on hold 5 minutes!!! Hung up and called back, determined to elicit an answer from some mystical authority figure. Finally received an affirmative that the cooler was found, stashed in the housekeeping office. WhoooHooo! But wait. Not so fast!
I drove 20 miles back to the hotel, only to find my ice chest was there, yet the costly contents had been nabbed! It was odd that whomever left three cans of seltzer inside, but poached the pricey grocery items : sprouted grain loaf of bread, 16oz tub of Uncle Shammy's garlic butter (sooo goood!!), an unopened package of turkey bacon, 3 gluten free no bake cookies, 4 cans of Watermelon-Rita, and 2 cans of Dr. Pepper flavored probotic drinks. All from Whole Foods <
This is a quiet hotel tucked away in an area with mostly business offices and buildings. It was quiet. We stayed here one night on a girl's trip around southern california. Even though it's tucked away in National City, if you have a car or rent a car you can easily access the highway to various parts of San Diego. It's not too far from an In and Out Burger place. I think you could walk to it actually. Overall good value for the stay.
Nice and clean rooms. Very accommodating for military personnel. Was here for 4 months while in training at 32nd St and enjoyed my stay here. Excellent staff as well. Shoutout to Ms. Cecilia who was very helpful and informative throughout my stay here!
I cannot say enough. Room was very clean and comfortable. Staff were wonderful and certainly added to the enjoyment of our stay. I had a call and all the staff showed concern and empathy. We Will CERTAINLY return!!!
We visit San Diego every summer and this is, by far, the best hotel we have stayed at. We stayed here for five nights with our five-year-old. The hotel was clean and beautifully decorated. The staff members were incredibly professional and always eager to help. The location of the hotel was perfect, it was quick drive to all of our favorite places in San Diego without the hassle of staying on Hotel Circle. Cecilia helped us check out and she was very helpful. We cannot wait to stay here next summer!
This hotel has the most accomodating staff! Cecilia was very helpful throughout the check in process and made sure that I am informed of the different benefits in this hotel. I will definitely come back!
This last week my son and I decided to take a boys getaway to San Diego for a couple of days and booked the Best Western Plus Marina Gateway. This is the first time in many years we have stayed at a Best Western and we pleasantly surprised. We usually stay downtown in the Lamp Light area but decided to try this hotel due to other Trip Advisor Reviews. Pro's: The hotel and room were very clean and modern with all the amenities and a very helpful staff. Convenient and Free Parking. Neg"s: Not Downtown or walking distance to the waterfront attractions. This was negated by a free hotel shuttle to a "Public Transportation Center" two blocks away. For $5 a day you can go anywhere in San Diego on trolley and/or bus. The first night we took the Blue and Orange Line Trolley's to and from the waterfront sea walk for dinner at the Fish Market restaurant (nest to the aircraft carrier Midway). It was no problem. We parked our vehicle at the hotel (FREE) and took and enjoyed the public transport to the attractions. Free parking is a great value in San Diego. This hotel is good value and we will stay here again. It also has reintroduced us to Best Western which we use again on future road trips.
Great location right by the freeway and easy to find with plenty of parking. The very smart and ‘perky' staff booked us in with a smile to a spotless and very large room with a nice bathroom, wardrobe and fridge/microwave/coffee/hot water machine, two large and very comfortable beds. But the best of all was the view. I had requested a room with some sort of interesting outlook ..and we got it! Overlooking three USN aircraft carriers, the commercial port, the Coronado Bridge and the city itself. There was lots to look at with huge trains, massive car transporters, container ships and other craft, aeroplanes landing and sparkly lights at night. The well maintained heated pool was in a small landscaped courtyard which protected it from the onshore breeze. We weren't very impressed with the neighbouring restaurant which serves the hotels guests needing meals but it was convenient. We slept with the window open (and air con off) and were woken in the morning to the strains of ‘reveille' and ‘the stars and stripes' being played on the flight decks of the aircraft carriers. Great. The hotel was convenient for the city centre and Cabrillo National Monument, across on the north end of the bay, which afforded impressive views over Coronado and the whole city. We also drove through Coronado itself (where scenes from ‘Some like it hot' were filmed - lots of shops , eateries and the famous hotel), across the arching and slightly scary (if you are sitting on the ‘outside' side of the car!) Coronado Bridge. The hotel was a great base also for visiting the wonderful and illuminating ‘Flying Leathernecks' Museum at Miramar (yes, that Miramar – if you know your ‘Top Gun') and La Jolla (of Beach Boys fame). Jewel in the crown was the discovery of the charming and unspoiled Imperial Beach – friendly locals, super original pier with views to Mexico and overlooking the breaking surf, stunning beach and an authentic old school California atmosphere which visitors seek.
We do travel a lot and appreciate a hotel such as this. The rom was clean and well appointed. The front desk staff was helpful and friendly, parking was convenient and abundant. The adjacent restaurant had a great breakfast. Overall we enjoyed our 5 night stay. One note to all hotels....the tv remotes should be easier to learn or be universal. That would be nice.
Arrived after a sleepless overnight flight from Hawaii. Was warmly greeted by Cecilia, who allowed us to check in early (very early). Room was nice, quiet, and reasonably priced with free parking. Cecilia answered all of our questions, was genuinely concerned about our comfort, and was one of the most gracious people I have ever met in the hotel business. A delightful stay in a nice place and I would not hesitate to recommend this hotel.
We stayed for 2 nights at their largest suite, which is smaller than the average 2-bed at residence inn or embassy suites. No breakfast included. However, as long as you're getting your room well ahead of time, the price reflects these differences. Area seems safe. Demand to get a room away from the restaurant, because it is loud.
Good points: Room was clean There is a microwave and full sized fridge Reception is lovely décor free parking Friendly staff Comfortable bed Negatives: So far away from the main town a good 10-15 minute drive and on the freeway. Situated in a very odd area not a marina that you would picture more industrial. Dated room décor Room opposite the restaurant were music was VERY LOUD. It did stop at a reasonable hour but until then it was very distracting. We were never pre-warned of this I only found out from other trip advisor reports. Thin walls did hear neighbours especially above Overall I would pay that little bit more to be centrally located next time. I would not return.
Just got in and was greeted by the warm welcoming of staff lead by Cecilia as she took care of my check in as everyone else was all smiles and pleasant. As she checked me in she was very informative of my surroundings and where the good spots are to eat if I am missing a particular cuisine which made the check in feel like a breeze. Room looks great and clean. I will have no trouble staying here again in fact this will be my go to spot everytime I visit family here in San Diego as long as the customer service doesn't change.
The hotel was very clean great customer service. close to free way and fast food stayed there for 3 days was great price swimming pool area was cleaned. no one bothered us. I would go back to that hotel on another vacation.
I arrived at the Best Western Plus needing only a room for one night, waiting for a flight the next day. Unfortunately, it is nowhere near the San Diego Airport. But I knew this and at the time I was booking a room, for that night all the available rooms closer were listing for $400, $700 per night -- and more. This is a great property. I heard it was brand new (or newly renovated) and it surely looks it. The entire property was immaculate and the room I had absolutely fabulous. I obtained a fantastic rate for the night; a combination of a "new hotel sale" and use of points with my on line booking account. Couldn't believe the price. But even the $110 standard advertised price for that night would have been a good value. While everything I has was great and wonderful, and all the staff professional and friendly, my one complaint is what they did not have. Most Best Westerns at which I have lodged include breakfast in the morning but this one did not. They had a restaurant directly in front of the property, and the listing said "includes 15% discount on food," but actually that only applied to breakfast. At check in I was told there wasn't any deal for lunch for supper. That's okay, but they should have been forthcoming in their listing.
This hotel is clean but very ordinary. There are no views from any part of the hotel. They put me in a room across from Goodies bar and grill that played music/boom boom noise until 10:30 pm. There was absolutely no way to get anything to block out the music. Room smelled like onions. I do not recommend this hotel at all if you come here to relax. I'm not sure what the “Plus” is. I have not found a reason to ever come back here.
I like very much the hotel and staff like Cecilia at the front desk. She welcomed us and very helpful... The clean is room and the cost is lower per night. I arrived early and asked if I could get into my room early - they said yes That was nice for them, If you compared to other Hotel, they will tell you to wait until 3pm. Its highly recommended...!!! Good job!
I stayed here with my family for a few days, and it was great as always. The staff, especially Cecilia, was very professional and welcoming. It's a bonus that this hotel allows dogs. The location of this place is convenient and not far from tourist attractions as well. Highly recommend staying here.
A really great hotel - nice, clean rooms with fridge, microwave,TV and Wifi at significantly lower cost than what you would pay closer to San Diego. The light rail (ie tram) station is a 5 to 10 minute walk from the hotel and will take you to almost anywhere in San Diego (including downtown) in 10 to 20 minutes. The best part is by taking the tram, you don't have to find and pay for parking downtown. The tram costs $5 for a day pass (plus $2 for a card that that you can reload) which is available at the tram station. There are also a few fast food places within walking distance of the hotel, and restaurant across the parking area. You do have to walk under the freeway to get to the tram or fast food outlets, but there is sidewalk and pedestrian crossings with traffic lights. The restaurant/bar across the parking lot is loud on Saturdays - if your room is facing them you can hear music till 10pm. To their credit the hotel staff warned me of this - I arrived early and asked if I could get into my room early - they said yes as long as I didn't mind a room facing the restaurant which would be loud. It was an OK trade-off for me, but if you are with you kids perhaps ask for a room away from from the restaurant if you are there on the weekend.
They had great customer service at the front desk. One in particular named Melissa made us feel very welcomed and helped us tremendously feel comfortable. We felt very special every time she greeted us with a big smile and with much respect.
Really enjoyed my stay here. The bed was a little too firm, but it didn't bother my bad back and after the first night, it didn't seem so hard. The hotel was quiet ... no noise from the hall or the room next door ... though if you stay a Friday or Saturday night, be sure to get a room away from the grille next door. They have live music outdoors for a couple of hours, but it stops by 10:30 each night. The room was very clean and well maintained, and the staff was very responsive. The access to I-5 was great, and the road noise was non-existent except for the morning rush hour, and even then, hardly noticeable. The hotel was just about 10 miles south of the airport and was only a few blocks from the MTS light rail/trolley station. We don't travel a great deal, but stay in a hotel perhaps 10 nights a year, and this is among the best rooms, overall, I've ever stayed in.
First room we were checked into wreaked of cigarette smoke despite being a non- smoking room. Management switched us rooms. Pillows are very hard; wife and I both had neck pain after the first night and went to the store to get some softer pillows. Then 24 hours after returning I developed a very itchy bunch of bites that were diagnosed as bed bugs. This was the only hotel we stayed at so 100% that they came from this property.

We were greeted at the front desk by a very friendly, helpful staff. Our room was clean and spacious. There were many little extras. I am a little bit of a germophobe and loved, loved, loved that the tv remote came in a little bag that said "fresh remote". The bathroom not only had the normal toilet paper folded with the triangle (not sure why) but the tissue box had the kleenex coming out of it shaped like a flower, and the hand towels on the bathtub and bathroom counter rolled and shaped, too. I liked the hotel so much that we decided to stay an extra night. They could not give me the same room the second night but instead gave me an upgraded room with a small balcony and let me move our stuff in early. The staff was professional but still nice and friendly. I think the first night we were helped by Alquin and Cecilia? All the staff that we dealt with were also nice.
This hotel was a perfect home base for us for our family trip to San Diego. Easy to access, had a nice pool, staff was great and a restaurant with great food and great service. The rooms were really nice and clean and spacious.
Extremely clean and welcoming location. Felt like royalty throughout the entire stay. Conveniently located to major parks, ocean, and sights that San Diego has to offer. Pool and hot tub were the highlight of my children's vacation and was look forward to every night! Amazing staff that took care my family and made sure that our stay was one to remember
We booked this hotel because of the reviews, price and free parking. Check in was quick and staff very friendly. Hotel is newer and very clean. Our room was quite large and we requested a room with a pool view on check in which they were able to accommodate. The pool is heated and well maintained. We used the hot tub a couple nights which was so relaxing. They don't have free breakfast but do have an agreement with the restaurant next door for 15% off breakfast (the restaurant is good, large portions, reasonable prices and excellent service). The hotel is not in a "touristy" area but is a quick commute to almost everywhere as its right on the freeway - 10 mins to gaslamp, Coronado island, San Diego Zoo, etc. A starbucks is only a 2 min drive away. Overall would consider staying again and would definitely recommend for anyone on a budget. It's great value for the money!
Even though we had only stayed one night, Alquin checked us in and was very friendly with a great personality. Enjoyable stay however the area was not what we had expected and couldn't use the pool, closed due to feces found earlier. :( The room was nice and the bathroom was excellent with the double sinks and separate shower and tub.
Clean room , easy check in and walkable to food with nice customer service what more can you ask for. Location was great. Love the pool and jacuzzi . I just wished you guys had free breakfast at least a muffin in the lobby. and a pool bar and this hotel would be top notch. Love my visit will def stay again!
I don't like writing bad reviews. But I think it wouldn't have been better. I paid less than 400 for a weekend. The room was clean. But the mattress was so hard that it caused my husband to not be able to move his back properly the entire time we were in California. We paid for free breakfast to be included. But we still had to go all the way to the restaurant next door to be able to do that. And only a 10 dollar credit would be applied per person. Given that each breakfast platter was about 15 dollars each. The location was good. It was so close to where we were going in San Diego . Stores were close by as well. I would rethink staying there only because my husband couldn't move after sleeping on the beds. But it was ok.
We stayed here for 3 nights on a family vacation. We arrived late in the evening, and they only had a room with 1 king bed. There were 4 of us, so we weren't sure if that was going to work. I booked through Southwest, and I guess that means you get what rooms are left. However, the employee named Manuel did some checking and was able to find us a room with 2 beds. We were tired after a long day and very grateful for this. My only real complaint was the low shower pressure. Took forever to rinse my hair. Otherwise, the room was very clean and comfortable. All staff that I encountered were very friendly.
Staff and property here are excellent! A little too far to walk to area attractions but Uber made getting around simple. Only reason I didn't give 5* was that the rooms were a bit noisy, especially when dealing with rude neighbors! Would definetly stay here again though. Tim and Alquin were the best!
Just outside the city of San Diego with convenient exit and entrance to freeway. The room was clean and very comfortable. We had a refrigerator and microwave but it was some distance to get groceries. Beautiful clean pool and hot tub We stayed a Saturday and Sunday night and it wasn't crowded. There is no restaurant in the hotel but there was free coffee in the morning in the lobby.. Be warned that there's a restaurant across the parking lot that plays live music outdoors until 10:30pm If you like to go to bed early ask for a room on the other side of the hotel.
This hotel although it had no restaurant was fantastic, friendly, clean, convenient location. As mentioned the only downside was no food service. They have the room in the lobby to perhaps put a small pastry bar just so guests have something to start the day. Staff were very accommodating and friendly. Pool was great and relaxing.
I will say that it is what you would expect from a Best Western Hotel. Awesome front desk service, friendly staff, conveniently located near everything. I will highlight that there is room for improvement with the housekeeping department. My room had a smell that was everything but pleasant, in fact the pillows still had the smell of whoever stayed in before me. I will also highlight that although it was after 1 AM, front desk took care of the problem. I'd give it 5 stars if it wasn't for the housekeeping issue.
We came to San Diego for a long weekend and spent 3 nights here. 1. Good location, close to SD and the airport.... Easy access to expressway. 2. Nice facilities.... Room comfortable and updated. We used the hot tub every night, walked across the parking lot for food, and would definitely stay again. 3. Front desk did warn us that the bar across the way has a band Friday and Saturday night. We delayed check in an hour to get a room on the back side.
I was booked at the Best Western for 5 nights during the Christmas holiday. The room was TERRIBLE. I arrived to the hotel early morning due to a previous trip suddenly ending and the staff was nice enough to accommodate my early check in. I got settled in my room, I turned on the tv and then realized that I could hear everything that was going on around me. Each night was an adventure as each night brought a new set of people next door and I could hear EVERYTHING that went on...including them using the restroom. The bed was hard but I used a great deal of pillows to help. There was something in my room that choked me pretty badly. I'm not sure if it was dust or mold but I ended up going to the doctor once I got back home. I coughed through both of my flights back to the east coast. HORRIBLE experience. I definitely would NOT recommend staying here.

We take great pride in being one of the top hotels in the San Diego area, and we want to personally apologize that your recent stay did not reflect this. We appreciate your compliments in regards to our staff and the wonderful job they did checking you in early to your reservation. Please feel free to respond to the direct message we have sent you at your earliest convenience. Your satisfaction is important to us and we will be using the feedback you gave us to implement improvements and to ensure we offer a better experience for our guests in the future. I am always hesitant booking a hotel because of negative comments, but there's always going to be one person that's not happy with something. This was such a good deal! Free parking, free wifi and free coffee each morning! Most hotels in San Diego charge an outrageous fee for parking AND wifi so they sold me here. It was also decently priced for only a couple of nights. I really only gave it 4 stars because it's in such a random location, but a short uber ride to downtown was not a hassle at all. It is a beautiful hotel, big rooms and really sweet and supportive staff. I would stay here again in a heartbeat. Thank you for a great stay!
We booked this room for a 3 day stay in San Diego to celebrate New Years 2018. The hotel is in National City right off of I-5 in National City. It is close to the Port, so the surroundings are not exactly scenic. However, you have easy access to I-5 and are only minutes away from Coronado Island, Old Town and other attractions. The hotel was a good value for the price.
I have never felt obligated to write a review before on Trip Advisor but I am writing this review to warn other families against booking this hotel so that they do not have to experience the terrible situation that my family was put in. We visited this hotel with a young baby and accordingly requested a quiet room. We were initially concerned with the room allocated due to there being large AV units for the whole building outside our room. The room they allocated to us was also directly next to the left. We mentioned our concerns immediately but were told that this was the most quiet room in the hotel. We decided to go with their recommendation. Unfortunately in the evening we found that this room was above the restaurant and that the restaurant played excessively loud music until 10:30pm in the evening. Accordingly we complained as my baby son kept waking up with the noise. It really was awful, we couldn't even hear the TV over the noise. Upon complaining again they said there were no further rooms and therefore we were stuck. Obviously disappointed for the rest of our stay we had to stay away from the hotel until 10:30pm each evening so that our son could sleep in his stroller/the car and then bring him back once the music finished. Not acceptable at all. When then complaining to customer services after our stay, they refuse to acknowledge the obvious problem or apologies for their error in allocating us to this unacceptable room. I have never experienced such dreadful service in my life. I hope this review encourages you to look elsewhere as I would not want you to have such a similar unpleasant holiday experience due to the incompetence of the hotel staff and lack of customer services. After this experience we will never use Best Western again, that's how bad it was!!!

Dear mwolfemurray, We sincerely apologize for your experience at our hotel and we appreciate you providing us with feedback. We are extremely sorry that you did not experience restful sleep during your stay with us. This case was out of the ordinary and guest satisfaction is our most important goal. Upon check in, our front desk offered you room on the fourth floor facing the courtyard, a room on the first floor facing north, a room on the third floor facing the front of the hotel and a room on the second floor facing the front of the hotel. When you chose the room on the fourth floor, we clearly informed you that on Friday and Saturday evenings the restaurant on property has a live band. We also informed you that the way our hotel is designed you will hear the music from the restaurant until 10:30pm. As soon as we heard of your dissatisfaction with the music, our front desk offered to move you to a different room that evening or the next morning. Unfortunately, you declined our hotels offer to move to another room each time it was offered. Your satisfaction is important to us and we will be using the feedback you gave us to implement improvements and to ensure we offer a better experience for our guests in the future. Sincerely, Best Western Plus Marina Gateway Hotel
We stayed here for 2 nights and the hotel totally exceeded our expectations. It was clean, had great staff and is just 15 mins drive away from San Diego attractions (off of I-5). The rooms were spacious, modern and immaculately clean - and had a microwave and fridge - which were a bonus! Pool is heated at 82 degrees all day and is also very well kept. I would absolutely stay here again - to get away from the hustle bustle of staying in SD, but close enough through a quick drive. Highly recommend!
This was not at all what I had expected based on the website. The rooms are good, the hotel is quite new but unlike most Best Western hotels, breakfast is not provided. There is no restaurant as part of the hotel, only a Mexican restaurant next door. The location is nowhere near any San Diego attractions and the 'Marina' is a shipyard. The hotel does not provide a shuttle from the airport.

Dear Q3965RNdavids, Thank you for taking the time to review your recent stay with us. We sincerely apologize for not exceeding your expectations during your stay. Our hotel does have a full service restaurant on property, Goodies Bar and Grill. They are open for breakfast, lunch and dinner and provide room service for our guests. Our hotel is only five miles south of downtown San Diego and 15 minutes from Coronado Beach, one of the top beaches in America. We are conveniently located only two blocks north of Pier 32 Waterfront Grill and Pepper Park. Our hotel is also only two blocks west of In & Out Burger, Starbucks, Chipotle, Goody's Sushi, Freddy's Steakburgers and Denny's. Our hotel offers a courtesy shuttle for pick up and drop off the 24th St Transit Center that is also conveniently located only a short distance from our hotel. Thank you for the time you spent responding and we will continue to strive to do a better job of taking care of our guest's concerns. Sincerely, Best Western Plus Marina Gateway Hotel
Our stay was very comfortable. We were particularly impressed with the service received from Alquin. He was always ver cheerful and happy to help. It was very refreshing to see that consistency over a period of our one week stay. The location is convenient due to proximity to the Highway but it is in a industrial/commercial type of setting which is not pleasing. Hotel lacks small but very much useful comforts of Breakfast in premises and the hours of morning Tea/Coffee availability are very short. Most hotels have citrus/fruit infused cold water dispenser but not this one.
OK, let's get the one thing I wish it had out of the way. The hotel doesn't provide free breakfast. You do get a discount if you go to the grill right outside and show your room key, and there's Keurig provided in the morning. The hotel is south of San Diego, just a bit off I-5. There's a marsh to the south (there's a mini park with signs that describe the birds living there, and the Native American people who used to live here) and some historic railway exhibits very close by. The staff are among the friendliest I've encountered, and our room (2 queen beds) are very spacious, clean, and very comfortable - lots of pillows, which I always appreciate. There's a microwave and mini fridge in the room. The hotel has a small gym and laundry room, as well as a spa and pool that looks very nice but I did not make use of. Despite it being fairly close to the freeway (and what looks like railway tracks just outside our room) it was very quiet. Overall, a comfortable and relaxing place to stay if you're visiting the area, and don't mind driving to the attractions.
Stayed here while in the San Diego area for a little vacation and relaxation. The hotel was really nice, but I did not have to pay resort fees here. Felt that this was a great value for how nice the hotel is.
Friendly staff that is willing to help. Check in was fast. Only one area for the elevators. Elevators were slow to open and one wouldn't move. We had to press the floor button multiple times before it started to move. Nice pool and spa. Towels had pubic hair and there was a dirty Q-tip under the sink. The area is industrial and you can hear the trains at night. This didn't bother us. We could see the ocean from our fourth story window. The I-5 freeway is just a light away.

I've stayed at other Best Westerns, but this is by far the best! The staff (particularly Russel and Manager Edgar) were so helpful, kind and accomodating. We flew in from Guam and we were checking into the hotel for a training and we were there early in the morning after traveling for a total of 18 hours. Check-in is usually at 3:00 pm. Russel worked diligently to get a room for us ready as we were exhausted! The manager (Edgar) is super sweet, kind and professional. The room is comfortable, clean and around the vicinity is well-kept and the lobby area is decorated for the holidays! BEAUTIFUL DECOR! The location is great - It;s near some food eateries and if you let Goody's Bar & Grill know you are a staying at this Best Western, you get 15% off your meal if you dine in! I love it! We had a wonderful stay and experience here and if we are ever in the area in the future, we will most definitely stay here again.
The hotel was clean, well decorated smelled nice and had 24h gym. The front desk staff always helpful and attentive. The only thing it missed was room service or a breakfast option. But still would come back!
We took a mini family vacation and found a great deal at this hotel! We were close to everything!! The rooms were large and clean and very comfortable. There is no breakfast, which is a shame but Goodies is next door and they have great food and great prices! Would stay here again1
Great place next to many business sites and minutes from downtown San Diego, CA and Gas Lamp District. The drive to all the amenities is only 5 minutes. Very cheap UBER rides to everywhere interesting. Must visit Hodad's for a great burger while there.
Only stayed 3 nights but what train wreck! Believe me, I've stayed at enough hotels for pleasure and business - Find another place - FAST!! It's noisy, smelly, has no breakfast and is in the middle of an industrial area. Yikes! Get this: they bring out a coffee machine from 5 AM to 10 AM each morning. WTF?

Such nice and professional staff at this hotel, I had my doubts about staying at a Best Western (as did my husband) but I'm glad I chose this hotel over the other over-priced hotels in San Diego, this was such a great price, parking was free, the rooms were nice & clean, beds were so comfortable and not to mention the adorable decor in the lobby. This location was just a 10 minute ride from the city which was great for us, even though we had our own car, we also got an uber into the city because we choose not to drink and drive, it's safer & only cost us $15.00 bucks. I would recommend this hotel to all my family & friends.
This BW Plus hotel was a delight to stay at with its convenient and ample parking, tropical landscape, and gorgeous lobby. Breakfast at the restaurant nearby was nice, and our stay at the hotel afforded us a generous breakfast discount. Our stay in December was met with a beautiful Christmas Holiday Decor in the lobby.
Best Western was quiet, restaurant across the way was okay they had live band playing. Wish there was more view from our room of the Marina. Staff was friendly. Rooms were clean. We didn't use the pool, but looked nice and clean.
We found this hotel online and chose it as it's a stone's throw off the I-5. It made for quick connections to most of the places we traveled to. You will need a car rental to stay here. We were delighted with the great customer service (offers to look things up, find info) including getting maintenance to quickly fix a running toilet. Nice view of the pools from our roomy second floor balcony. No free breakfast was a negative, but we did have a fridge and microwave in our room where we stocked snacks and breakfast food. Restaurant across the parking lot was more of a sports bar, but the service was good and the food reasonably priced with a 10% hotel discount. I would love to visit San Diego again and would be delighted to return to this hotel.
Spent 4 nights here for a family vacation with our 2.5 year old. We originally chose this hotel as it offers free wifi, free parking and had a fitness center and pool which are high priority items for us. We were immediately greeted upon arrival by the friendly front desk staff and were checked-in quickly. We were even offered a choice of floor to stay on which was a great extra perk for us. All the amenities were explained to us and overall the check-in experience was excellent. Plenty of on-site (free!) parking which is huge factor for us as we always rent a car while in California. There were plenty of spaces available every night. The room was very clean and well appointed. It had an in-room fridge which is a huge plus for us traveling with a toddler. In-room safe is provided also which we appreciated, the bathrooms were clean and good working order. Room was cleaned and serviced meticulously every day. We utilized the well equipped and clean fitness center. The free wifi in our room and throughout the hotel is probably the biggest factor in our decision to stay here. It was fast and reliable and a must for us as we don't have data while in the US. Knowing it was included in the room and not having an extra fee for it is always a plus for us. Location wise, not near downtown San Diego but it has a restaurant across the parking lot, Starbucks, Chipotle, and In-N-Out was just across the interstate from the hotel. Access to I-5 is just next to the hotel. Overall we had a fantastic stay at this hotel for our family vacation in San Diego. Offering wifi and parking included in the room price earns high praise from us. We will definitely look to stay here again for our next trip to the area.
Friendly is staff, rooms and amenities are in excellent condition. Free parking. Hotel is close to shopping centers, close to Downtown, good location. I really recommend this hotel, will come again. :)
10 plus ...excellent visit, seamless through out from check in to check out, great coffee service and convenience , restaurant across the parking lot, marina half mile down the road... railroad museum across he street, and for all that it was reasonable peace full through out the week end.
We spent only one night at the Best Western Plus Marina Gateway but found everything superb - from convenient location to excellent bed to fine service. We will stay there again and recommend it to friends and family.
This is a great place to stay for business or pleasure. Rooms are very neat and clean. Staff is very courteous, helpful, and friendly. The building is very modern, and has 4 floors. Plentiful parking. There is no continental breakfast provided except for Keurig coffee. Many other eating establishments nearby.
Clean room, nice bed, modern décor. Good fitness room. Overall very good. Only surprise was lack of comp breakfast. Very much an above average experience. No noise from other rooms or outside. Very clean lobby and very professional staff.
I really liked the layout of my room. It had a large area for the bed, desk and easy chair where I could put my feet up on a light-weight stool. The bed was comfortable and the desk had lamps where I could plug in my electronics ad had a flat-screen tv There was a separate area for the closet with a safe, and a microwave and fridge. The room was very clean. The desk clerk on check in was very friendly and helpful with my luggage. The hotel was close to the freeway (and I think to the ocean but didn't have time to explore). There is a grill/bar directly across the parking lot. It seems to be a newer, modern hotel that was a great value for what it offers.
Spent 3 nights here. Hotel was clean, comfortable and spacious. Has an in room safe, fridge and microwave and a single serve coffee machine. Breakfast wasn't include for us. They do provide in the morning tea and coffee between 6am and 10am only. The laundry facility has 3 washing machines and 3 dryers. Each cost $2 to do a load of clothes. There is the Trolley on the blue line run by the Metropolitan transit System that is close by, a 5 min walk from the hotel to the station. Cost $2.50 per trip or a 1 day pass for $5. I would recommend this hotel to anyone with or without a car.
Overall this is a great hotel. During our stay the price was an extreme value for the area. Great Staff (didn't interact with them a ton but they were very nice during checkin. The rooms are large and clean. Much nicer than your average Best Western Plus.
This trip did not go the way I planned...but the staff at this hotel was amazing and helped me every step of the way. I left my phone in a cab as soon as I arrived at the hotel. They helped me contact different cab services to find my phone and gave me ideas on how to find it. They treated me like a friend, when I had only just met them. The way they helped me and took me in in this time helped me from having a total breakdown. They have been nothing short of magnificent. Manny is also amazing. He talked to me and made me feel at home here at the hotel. I cannot say enough great things about the staff here. The rooms are clean and room service does a fantastic job.
Nice Hotel if you need to be in area. Room was clean and had updated decor. You should know that that breakfast is NOT provided as in most hotels of this class, e.g., Hampton, Spring Hill Suites. You get a 15% discount at restaurant across parking lot. BW website implies free breakfast included which is not the case. Internet was free and fast enough to support Citrix so I could get work accomplished.
Great staff Manny and Chyanne thank you for you attention to details and hospitality!! Pleasent clean - great overall love the Jacuzzi pool and vending machines in 2nd floor! Felt like the room was big enough and clean. Thank you
Really enjoyed staying here. It is located near the 32nd street navy base. The rooms are clean and well maintained. Parking is plentiful. Across the street is a bar and grill called Goodies. The food is delicious and reasonably priced. Breakfast is plentiful and can be shared and no one will leave hungry. On Friday and Saturday nights they have live band music til 10:30 PM. Everybody has a good time shaking their booty. Really enjoyed the hotel and Goodies. Highly recommend for everyone.
Husband and I spent 6 nights. Great hotel for the price. The staff was nice, rooms were nice looking and clean. Pool/hot tub were well maintained and not overly busy. The location isn't overly scenic but we did not care. It had easy access to I-5. It is next to railroad tracks which we heard once or twice and they were doing road construction and ripping up concrete pretty early in the morning. Nothing you can do about roadwork! Would recommend to anyone!
Excellent place to hold any kind of Class. Staff was helpful, and we received a Discount for eating at Goodies, which was about 200 yards distance. We had some problems with needing copies made of some paperwork, and had no difficulty getting the staff to make them for us.
This was a fabulous hotel! The staff was very friendly. Hotel and room were very clean and will maintained. We were torn between a room with 2 double beds and a balcony or a king suite. We decided on the king suite. To our delight, it had a balcony! We thoroughly enjoyed our stay and this will be our hotel of choice every time we go to San Diego.
Our entire family (4 rooms-ages 2 and up) was very happy with this location and the quality of the hotel with our limited budget. Placed in a nice location for San Diego stay. Rooms are spacious (lots of room for our grandkids) and clean with quiet setting with some views of ocean. Great for those who want a nice hotel but are on the go...Friendly/helpful staff greeting us day or night. Nice area's for coffee (Keurig) or cocoa in the living area made for great meeting spot for our larger group. Our adult kids really enjoy the fitness room and mom loved sitting by the pool in the patio area. Breakfast in the restaurant next door was offered at discounted price. It was worth it! Great service and great food. Our stay at this BW enhanced a our family trip to San Diego celebrating mom's birthday and we will definitely be back! Thank you BW Plus!

Dear Heather Y, We are so happy to hear that you had such an enjoyable stay here at our hotel. Thank you so much for your thoughtful review of our hotel. We really appreciate you staying with us. We're delighted you enjoyed your stay here and were so positive about our guest rooms and our location. We also deeply appreciate your kind words about our staff and the service we deliver. Thank you, Best Western Plus Marina Gateway Hotel
I stayed at the Best Western Plus Marina Gateway Hotel because I have stayed. I had 8 other friends that I recommend to stay there, because it is a nice hotel. We were there for 4 days. I had to leave after 2 but the rest stayed until Sunday. We were celebrating our 55th class reunion. Thanks for the great stay.
Great hotel staff and even better maid service! The restaurant across from the hotel has THE WORST FOOD EVER, so aviod it AND room service, but there's plenty of places to eat nearby. And, although the "DJ" or band can be SUPER loud, they're great about toningdown the music at 10pm. I've stayed here a couple of times, and it's always consistently a pleasant stay.
Nice smaller hotel, very clean and comfy. Right of I-5, yet very quiet. No breakfast included, but 15% off bill from restaurant next door. Good food- huge breakfasts, great burgers, fish & chips and bar. Hotel has a nice, clean smell. Bathrooms in need of an update, but overall a nice place to stay away from the busy beaches.
This hotel not located in the best area. The beds were uncomfortable and the Ac was making noise . I called some one he's name many in front desk he was very rude to me that way I decide to write review .
This hotel was very friendly, helpful, and clean. My family of 6 enjoyed our stay and managed to stay cozy despite the larger number of guests we had. It was very close to the places we wanted to sightsee and they managed to listen our every need. I recommend this hotel.
marina view, waterfront, it's all a farce. This hotel may look presentable but it is built poorly. Thin walls, thin windows, we hear noise from everywhere! Outside is construction, rooms above and below we could hear clearly, this was probably the noisiest hotel we have stayed in over the past 3 years. And bed made the noise seem like a non issue. Lumpy, misshapen, hard, beds had to have been 10 years old minimum. Don't waste your money. For $150+ you can stay in much better places even if they don't have a "view".
This hotel was just average and not located in the best area. The beds were uncomfortable and the bathroom was dirty. The onsite restaurant that was next door was dirty as well. After waiting a while to be waited on we just decided to leave.
We had a room with a bed and a sofa bed, plenty of room for the 4 of us plus a huge bathroom with separate shower. It was an easy 10 minute drive to downtown along the road by the naval base (quieter than the freeway). No food on site unfortunately and the food place next door was loud some evenings, but stopped by around 10pm.
Nice lobby. Complimentary coffee and tea until 11am, no food on site. Goodies Bar & Grill located across the street. We checked in a little after 3pm and our room was not ready. They said they have one room left with two beds. We took it because we had a wedding to get ready for. Smelled of pets, thick odor. Smelled like the room was cleaned in a rush. I was also told the restaurant across the street would give us a discount if we showed our room key; this did not happen. Waterfront Restaurant nearby was very nice. Great view, food and people.
Overall our stay here was very good; staff was very attentive and friendly, the lobby and rooms were modern and nice. The only reasons I don't give it an excellent rating is that the water in the shower took a long time to warm up and never did get to hot and it would have been nice to have a free/included breakfast on site.
Everything you can ask for is at your fingertips, Great location to stay at and visit the Zoo, Sea World and Outlet shopping centres, and of course the food festival and marina should NOT be missed. We will stay there if ever we get a chance to visit San Diego again.
Very nice quite stay. The staff is very professional, the hotel is very clean & located near lots of entertainment with a nice view of the surrounding area. Yet ideal for some quiet couples time for a walk in the lovely night air.
I traveled to San Diego often for business and family. This is my first time staying at this hotel. By far- this hotel is amazing. Russell in front desk is courteous, knowledgeable and provided and excellent customer service. The hotel is super clean, no ammonia, Lysol or bleach smells. The bed is so comfortable and clean. The ref and microwave and bathroom are clean and in good shape. The big bath towel is a little hard, but the room and the hotel is excellent. I really like this hotel and by far- the most kept secret hotel in South San Diego!!Kudos to management and staff!!1 I will be back again to stay in this hotel.
This hotel could have been rated as Excellent by me as everything OTHER than the pillow/cushion is in good order. Great wifi, great room, air conditioning, bathroom facilities etc, but incredibly no pillows, just white cushions. If I'd known this, I wouldn't have booked. The first hotel in 30 years of travel that doesn't supply pillows.
This is a fantastic hotel at a great location and a great price. The Staff was outstanding! The room was great, the bed was great and the internet was the best I have ever used in a hotel. The location is near downtown but not in the heart of it which is ok with me. This location was also very quite. I will be staying here again!
Good for stopover from adjacent Freeway. Only redeeming feature of part industrial surrounds being proximity of Fast Food outlets. Too far away from all the glorious attractions that bring tourists to San Diego

Dear Phil M, Thank you for taking the time to review your recent stay with us. Our hotel is only five miles south of downtown San Diego and 15 minutes from Coronado Beach, one of the top beaches in America. We are also only two blocks north of Pier 32 Marina and Pepper Park. Our hotel offers a courtesy shuttle that provides transportation to and from the local trolley station. We appreciate your feedback and hope to be able to welcome you back to our hotel in the future. Sincerely, Best Western Plus Marina Gateway Hotel
Very nice staff, very clean hotel but we didn't realize that they didn't have breakfast like every other BW I've ever stayed at. Your only option is to eat at the bar across the parking lot and get a 15% discount...unless you drive somewhere else. All you get is coffee...not all day, but they do put out a Kerig in the morning, but it takes time to make a cup so a line forms. Be aware that you are not within walking distance of anything because it is in an industrial area, but the hotel is very nice and the the people are awesome.
My husband and I had an excellent experience. We arrived and the first thing we saw was the convenience of the location to all nearby eating, shopping, and down town San Diego. I always thought of Best Western as a 3 star hotel but this weekend I would definitely have to raise the bar to 5* Hotel. This was a gift from my daughter who is employed with Best Western she loves her job.
Several years ago, when I stayed at this hotel it was very well kept and clean. It appears that they are now cutting corners and the rooms do not smell clean and the ac units are not being maintained. I had to move to another room due to the failed attempt of maintenance to repair the ac unit. New room was noticeably cleaner and did not smell stale and unclean.

Dear alvinc774, We sincerely apologize for your unfortunate experience at our property. We take great pride in being one of the top hotels in the San Diego area, and we want to apologize that your recent stay did not reflect this. Our staff did our best to provide you with the most comfortable room possible and as you noted we were more than happy to move you to a different room upon hearing of your dissatisfaction with the air conditioning unit in your room. Your satisfaction is important to us and we will use this feedback to implement improvements and offer a better experience for our guests. Again, we express our sincerest apologies regarding your stay, and we hope to be able to welcome you back to our hotel soon. Sincerely, Best Western Plus Marina Gateway Hotel
The best BW I have ever stayed at. Clean, comfortable, helpful!!! If I am ever in the area again this will be where I will stay. I can not say enough great things about this hotel. They also have a great fitness center with all you could ever need to work out on the road.

Dear Thomas H, We are so happy to hear that you had such an enjoyable stay here at our hotel. Thank you so much for your thoughtful review of our hotel. We really appreciate you staying with us. We're delighted you enjoyed your stay here and were so positive about our cleanliness and fitness center. It was a pleasure to have you as our guest, and we hope to see you soon in the future. Sincerely, Best Western Plus Marina Gateway Hotel
Stayed here for one night as we moved into the area. Very nice hotel, friendly staff, nice restaurant next door. Very nice experience. The area is between National City and Chula Vista right off the I-5
We frequently travel to San Diego and so far this has been the best among them (inclusive of other non Best Western hotels). The location is what I like best. I feel safe in the area, and the places where we want to visit were all accessible.
Sounds great on the ads, but really a cheap motel in a Best Western wrapper. Very minimal amenities, noisy road traffic around building, no breakfasts (as some sites indicate), noisy floor stomping above, dirty hall carpets, and poor maid service in room during 5 night stay. I don't like staying in a hotel that cares more about the front entrance than the in-house stay and cleanliness.
Stayed 4 nights with family. Glad we chose this hotel over others in downtown San Diego. It was only a short drive south and close to the freeway. Free parking. Trolley stop a short walk away for a 15 minute ride into San Diego. All the staff we encountered were friendly and helpful. Our room was spacious, clean and very well appointed. Made use of the self service laundry facilities. Pool was a good size with plenty of seating options. Only negative that there is no on site breakfast.
The hotel was very clean and all the facilities were well maintained. Staff were very friendly and helpful. There was a nice, friendly atmosphere around the hotel. The children enjoyed the pool. The only negative is the location. The surroundings are an industrial harbour, so not pretty. There are trains constantly running and you will hear their horns early morning until late evening. It did not disturb us or our sleep but then we only really used the hotel as somewhere to sleep. On the plus side it is right by the highway (not that you could hear the traffic). You could drive straight onto the highway and get to San Diego's main attractions quickly. There is a restaurant/bar next to the hotel. The hotel has a 20% discount agreed with them. We had breakfast there one morning, which was great, but a little pricey even with the discount. In the evening they sometimes have live music. It was lively but had a good atmosphere without being raucous. Just the other side of the highway is an In n Out Burger place, which judging by the queue (the drive thru had cars queued out of the parking lot and onto the main strip even with people taking orders before you got to the window) must be good. There is also a Dennys, which is our goto place for breakfast. As always the food and service was good.
The Best Western Plus Marina Gateway is a beautiful hotel by any standard. it is always immaculate, wonderfully airy and bright, and the staff are always friendly and helpful. I wouldn't stay anywhere else!
We stayed here for 5 nights with our two kids. The pool area/hot tub is quite nice. The rooms are very clean and are of adequate size. The common areas of this hotel are all in top condition and VERY clean. No continental breakfast, unfortunately. The restaurant next door (Goodies) offers a 15% discount upon showing your room card. The restaurant (Goodies) offers good service but the food is mediocre in my opinion. Hotel has a decent location but a car is a must as almost everything is beyond walking distance. Overall the hotel is an excellent value, friendly staff and is VERY clean. I would definitely stay there again!
Every staffer from manager, front desk, housekeeping, and maintenance seem happy at work and friendly. Plenty of free parking. Great food choices in walking distance. Biggest drawback: stairs only in endings of two long hallways, with really slow elevators in the middle to lobby. Housekeeping needs these elevators to move their carts daily. So stairs in the middle would have been nice for guests. My mini-fridge did not have a freezer compartment, which might matter to some guests.
We have stayed in every Best Western in Chula Vista, one in San Isidro, and one dontown SD. This one exceeds the others by far. We have also stayed in Holiday Inn, National City, and the Windham. It exceeds those hotels as well. We love the hotel, the location, and the people who work there are exceptional
Great stay. This is a great hotel. The rooms were very clean and spacious. All staff was very friendly and welcoming. Everything in the hotel functioned properly. We went down to the pool and enjoyed it, clean and in good condition, clean towels are provided at the pool area. I used the fitness center, also clean, I do wish they would have provided a drinking fountain in there but that was my bad for not thinking to take enough water. Overall a wonderful experience. It was 10 minutes south of the San Diego Zoo, which is why we visited SD. Parking was easy and the area looked safe.
We stayed there 6 nights from check in to check out the room and the staff were great. We had a great time in the city as well as San Diego if we had known that part of the country was so much fun we would have stayed longer.
Got an amazing rate thru Expedia for 2 nights. You can believe the reviews. The hotel is very nice with up to date furnishings. It is very clean. I would recommend to anyone visiting San Diego looking for a bargain.
Outstanding in every way possible. The professionalism of each and every employee I had contact with should be the guidelines for every hotel. I felt like a VIP during my two day stay at BEST WESTERN PLUS MARINA GATEWAY HOTEL
Decent hotel for the money. Pretty close to beach and other attractions we went to. Hotel staff was very friendly at check in and at other times during our stay. Pool and hot tub were nice. Had a decent amount of restaurants in close proximity to the hotel. Many different types of shopping in the area like Costco, Wal-Mart and other small discount stores.
very good service n good location close to a good restaurants, close to the beach.rooms super clean, and lobby with beautyfull decoration. best west marina gateaway one of the best, with good pricesin the area.
Nice clean hotel. Staff were very helpful and informative. Pool area clean and very usable. Would be nice if room came with breakfast. Close to marina and beaches. Good value nice fridge in room. Coffee was in room but the coffee in the lobby was much better. We went to Goodies bar/restaurant one evening and the band was great happy hour food was great.
The hotel was in an area which was close to the airport which made it convenient for us upon arrival and departure. The hotel's appearance was clean and nice. I think they could upgrade their rooms a bit.
Stayed for 4 nights Thurs-Sun. The first night I had booked separately so we were actually upgraded to a suite with two queen beds. The suite includes an extra area with a pullout sofa and another television. Also noticed that it even had a nicer hairdryer and better, quieter AC unit. Then for the next 3 days stayed in the regular room with a king sized bed. Huge AC unit, pretty loud. The beds are also a little hard, and the comforter is thin. Personally, I just prefer thick comforters in the bed. I still slept pretty well though. Theres a small gym and a pool but it was a busy weekend i think, so there was usually people in it. The location is great, just off the freeway, about a $13 uber/lyft ride to little italy or the zoo. Housekeeping was great, they cleaned the room so well. Staff was also friendly, easy check-in and check out. Stayed at top floor, I felt like it was just more quiet. Price is decent, I would stay here if you don't plan on staying in your room too much and here for a business conference or something.
A few miles south of the san diago downtown...literally right off the interstate...perfect location. Chula Vista is only a short distance away. Plenty to do in the area . Safe location with a great staff in all aspects. For the money, one of the nicest best westerns out there. Would come back in a minute
If you desire a good nights sleep while on vacation on a Saturday in July at the Best Western Plus Gateway Marina $305 room; you will be sorely disappointed. The queen bed was as hard as a rock; you can get more head and neck support from the ground compared to BW Plus pillow! The hotel had a heavy air freshener scent that saturated the entire hotel! In addition, the shower had zero water pressure and if you plan to wash laundry; there is no coin machine & the front desk does not carry quarters on hand. Worst BW experience ever.

Again, we express our sincerest apologies regarding your stay, and we hope to be able to welcome you back to our hotel soon. Sincerely, Best Western Plus Marina Gateway Hotel
This hotel was a nice find. The location was convenient for me and I really enjoyed the spa. The street freeway noise was a downer but other than that I was completely satisfied. I would surely stay here again but I will ask for a room away from the freeway!
We stayed here during the comic con. The staff are very welcoming and it's easy enough to find. There were a couple of issues with the room but nothing too bad. A constant rattle from the air con in the hotel but nothing that couldn't be ignored. There is a bar / grill next door that does some decent food but is a little over priced for what it is but the staff are real friendly. There is a small pool and small gym but these were no used due to the type of visit.
The hotel is nice, but the service is amazing, great people, hassle free check-in and check-out. I came in thinking this was going to be an inconvenience, since all the hotels were sold our for comic con, but I am glad I stayed here, only 8 min uber trip to the convention or so close to the train station.
This place was awesome. Looked better in person than in the pictures. The room was super clean. The AC was great. The common areas looked great. Staff was very friendly and were able to help me out when I asked them stuff.
Stayed one night with our pet on our way for Global Entry Interview. Hotel is clean, modern and well equipped. Desk staff was very friendly. We especially thought Oliver was great. He took our initial reservation and checked us in when we arrived. He explained everything about property, where our pet could go etc.
We held a conference with 35 attendees. It was a huge success thanks to the amazingly attentive staff that over delivered on everything that they promised. I wish to thank the Sales Manager Denise Halliwell and the staff at the Best Western Marina Gateway Hotel for the excellent hospitality expressed to me and my US Coast Guard group during the week of 10 July. From our arrival to the moment we left, every engagement we had with the hotel staff was warm, friendly and helpful. Everyone went about their business with a smile on their faces and nothing was too much trouble. For example, Denise had the foresight to have our group pre-order our lunch which saved us waiting time at the restaurant next door to the hotel. Our attendees had no complaints about their rooms, and really enjoyed the hotel pool. All in all, while we had long days of training meetings all the staff in Hotel made it a little bit special and I look forward to returning again in the near future. Many thanks to the entire hotel staff, especially Denise, Russell and Manny who worked so hard, for us, during our stay. We look forward to coming back ...
We had a two night stay at this hotel. The rooms are very large and have a small balcony. The pool and hot tub are nice. The parking is great and the highway is right outside the parking lot. This is a great hotel for the money. I would stay again
We stayed 4 nights and had a rental car with us. It takes 15-20 minutes to drive to San Diego Zoo or Balboa park. The hotel lobby is very nice, clean, modern and service checking in what smooth. The rooms are spacious and not dated. There is a microwave, fridge, ironing board and iron. The hairdryer is hidden in a black bag under the sink- (good camouflaging) One thing was the 5 cushions like pillows you see are basically your pillows. Found it odd not to have an actual pillow to use.Would have preferred they provided regular pillows. The night before check out I tried to take out my passport from the safe but my card wouldn't work so needed someone to come and reset and open the safe for us. There is a cool down period of 15 minutes so when they came the first time they said they would be back in 13 minutes but didn't show up.. we had to cal again and wait around for close to another 25 minutes before they came.. that service could be better. We waited around for close to an hr around 1am because of this. We tried the pool and the water is heated which is nice but come sun down there are a few flies everywhere so we left soon after. Good convenient location and close to an In -N- Out burger joint that was busy.
We choose this hotel to be very close to the nearby marina and we were pleasantly surprised. Good size room, very clean and a good value. The bed was very firm and had no sag. Overall the staff was very friendly.
We stayed for two nights and used it as a convenient base to visit San Diego using the nearby local rapid light transit system to transit to and from downtown San Diego at 8$ per person for a day ticket. Much quicker, cheaper and less hassle than using the car and its associated parking costs. The hotel itself is very much a Best Western with good quality accommodation and helpful staff who gave us great advice on the rapid light transit system. Just a pity the hotel has no restaurant or continental breakfast included in its tariff.
We always stay here because my daughter is in the Nsvy and stays on Naval Base 32nd street. Great location and very nice accomodations. We will come back and always stay here. Pool and spa are perfect.
I looked for a suitable hotel online for my family to stay at three nights during familyt wedding festivities. Found this motel located not far from the venues I needed to attend and for a reasonable price. I was a little put off by the lack of included breakfast but found a similar lack in other comparable area hotels and decided it was a good option anyway. The location was convenient to transport on I-5 and the motel cleanliness and facilities were nothing less than impeccable IMO. The staff, especially Jeff, even accommodated a couple of special requests I made as I arrived. I have nothing but good to say about this fine establishment and recommend it highly.
very nice motel with excellent room . the restaurant has a very nice Mexican breakfast but for $12. the location is nice and the room has a lot of space. the toliters need to be refilled again . they provide only one shampoo bottel.
Great Hotel!! It's quiet and nicely appointed. The staff is friendly and attentive. I have stayed here 4 times (for a total of 31 days) in the last 6 months and have enjoyed each stay. It's my go to hotel in San Diego. I have paid much more for other hotels and they simply don't measure up to the Best Western Marina Gateway. I will definitely be back on my next trip to San Diego!
Loved my stay! AND loved this hotel! Cant wait to go back! Staff was amazing and hotel was extremely clean! Beds were so comfortably. Location was perfect easy access to freeway. Thank you staff for a wonderful experience!
Very clean facility. Great breakfast options. Nice staff. Very comfortable beds. Suite was a great size for a family. Quiet hotel. Great location. Only stayed one night but perfect for an overnight for us.
The staff was very friendly and professional. Good place for families and has a large pool area. Located near the highway and safe environment. I would visit this location again. Bay view was wonderful.
Great place to stay. Great welcome feeling, clean, and smells so good when you walk in the front door. We weren't sure where to stay, but this place impressed us. We were visiting our son in the navy. We will be back. Cheyanne at the front desk was a great help.
A great place to stay while on official travel in the San Diego/South Bay Area. A very courteous and professional staff that is always there to assist in any way. The facility is clean and smells great.
At first glance, this hotel is beautiful and clean. Room 424, however, had bugs in the bed, trash under all the beds and couch (including a partially used tin of chewing tobacco). When my husband and kids went to the pool, they were swarmed by hundreds of mosquitos! They were all bit several times...my kids were terrified to be outside at night, because of the swarms of mosquitos!

June 18, 2017 Dear Jessica B, We sincerely apologize for your experience at our property and we appreciate you providing us with feedback. I stayed here in June 17 for 3 nights. Nice hotel, quite basic and clean. Staff were helpful as soon as we arrived they gave us a piece of paper with a lot of places on it to see and how to get there. Tram service is available outside hotel which is handy. Pool is average although staying in San Diego I doubt many will Be by the pool that often :) Hotel doesn't have a bar which I thought was strange, although it does have a nice restaurant and bar just across from it called goodies and you get 15% of if you are staying at the hotel which is good :)
Very clean, friendly staff, nice pool and hot tub, and comfy beds. It's a short drive to Coronado Beach. They do not offer a free breakfast, but you do get a discount at the restaurant next door. Would stay here again.
This hotel was located in a convenient area. It was 15 minutes to the airport and 20 minutes to the kid friendly attractions we wanted to go to. The staff was friendly and helpful and the hotel was very clean.
New well kept hotel, friendly and helpful staff. Strong wifi and good value for money. The hotel does not have any food facilities or a kitchen therefore offer 30% discount at the diner across the way. Rooms at the front of the hotel are exposed to the sound of the live music at the diner every Friday and Saturday.
This is a beautiful hotel located less than 10 miles from the airport with easy access immediately off a single freeway. The staff are all very friendly and helpful, and the grounds are lovely. The hotel has an excellent business center for catching up on work from the office while away. A restaurant is located on the hotel grounds, and there's a Denny's within walking distance. The beds are not uncomfortable and are acceptable for the cost. The beauty of this hotel is the proximity to downtown/airport but with free parking and internet all at a very affordable room price yet with service and quality way above it's competitors in this same area of town.
Reposting the original review I wrote back in Feb 2017, which was deleted later for the reason I will explain later. Original Post from Feb 2017: “If you have young kids, DO NOT consider this hotel. NOT KIDS FRIENDLY AT ALL. We booked this hotel because it has good review but it turned out to be a terrible experience. Our flight was delayed and by the time we got to the hotel, it was already 10pm-ish. After we dropped off our luggage, we had to go out and grab diapers and food for our baby. We came back around 11pm. We had had a long day and our kids were exhausted. We did make some noises as kids were being kids (NOT non-stop or excessive screaming or jumping at all) Hotel staff told us the guest below us had noise complaints against us. We tried to settle them down as soon as we could. We finally put them to bed around 12pm-ish. For the next three nights, we put them to bed before 9pm. Upon check out, we were CHARGED for noise complaint. Guest below us asked for an upgrade and staff charged us. We were NEVER warned about fee for noise complaint. My husband requested to see a written doc to show that hotel would charge a fee if there is a noise complaint and hotel staff said there is none and it's our fault. We have stayed at a lot of hotels (with kids) and have NEVER got any warning or any charge. THIS IS NOT A KIDS-FRIENDLY hotel at all. VERY DISAPPOINTED with the service. “ NEW INFORMATION: After we posted this review, we immediately received a call from Jeff (hotel manager) apologizing for the incident. He offered to refund the noise penalty + refund one night + one free night voucher (ps. My husband did say he doesn't think we will be traveling to San Diego anytime soon. Jeff said we can give it to our family and friends). We were quite surprised that they had such a responsive and good customer service. The credit card refund of the noise charge showed up after a week later and we got another call from Jeff confirming whether we received the refund. My husband then asked about one night refund and the voucher. Jeff then said because we prepaid through online booking website so they were unable to refund through credit card. He will give us TWO free-night voucher instead. (PS. My co-worker said we should have requested for a check refund to see if they are sincere) This time, Jeff mentioned if we can edit or remove TripAdvisor review. After a week of waiting, still no voucher in the mail, we received the 3rd phone call from Jeff asking for our address. A week later, we received the voucher as promised. That's when we removed the review because they were pretty responsive to the complaint. We thought this is the end of the story, then fast forward to four months later (June 2017) We gave the voucher to my friend. I told her to contact the hotel directly to redeem the voucher. The voucher does not have our name on it. It is issued to “The holder”. She called the hotel and Jeff said this voucher can only be redeemed by myself and my husband. So I called Jeff and he said the review is not taken down. I checked my account again, no review. I googled TripAdvisor, no review. I e-mailed hotel and sent a facebook message requesting link to the review, no reply “yet”. I do not want to make another LD call again. So, this is it. PS. Jeff did say “your friend can call, we'll still honor it”, but I don't feel it's a good idea to redeem the voucher anymore. Another PS, after we got back, we checked some of the reviews. There were some reviews about poor soundproof.
Stayed overnight to go fly fishing in the Chula Vista marina. Perfect location/nearby restaurants. New hotel with great facilities and staff. Recommend highly! Based on my experience, would use Best Western for travel destination in the future.
I booked this hotel for a two night stay over Memorial Weekend. I had other relatives already staying here so I just followed their lead. I was very impressed with the property; very clean, new, conveniently close to the Interstate 5 freeway. I arrived around noon which is earlier than the actual check in time of 3pm. Manny at the front desk was was especially kind. His friendly demeanor and eagerness to help should be acknowledged. I had been up for 24 hours and thankfully, a room was available for my early check in. I had booked a room with two beds for three adults and one child. The accommodations were clean, modern, and spacious. There was a small fridge, microwave, and coffee maker. (Fridge and microwave are always the biggest YAY in my opinion.) There is a nice heated pool and hot tub that my son and I enjoyed. The Goodie's restaurant across the parking lot has pretty good food. I called an order to go and enjoyed it in the room. Overall, a nice, simple, newer, clean, no frills hotel that has everything you need. Highly recommended.
Lovely clean room, friendly staff. Great meal options and discount at goodies bar on grounds. Huge amount of parking around the hotel grounds and no extra charge was a huge reason we choose this hotel and location.
Stayed here to start our holiday off for 1 night. Service staff were very friendly and parking was easy. Accessing the room was easy with the lift and the 15% off voucher for the restaurant across the car park was handy for dinner. Beds were comfy and room was quiet. Downside was it didn't have it's own breakfast but even then that didn't effect us.
Rented my room through hotels.com. Rented it 2 weeks before my trip at a rate of around $155. Good parking. Nice room. I asked for a double queen bedroom with a sofa bed. It comes with two TVs. No breakfast included. Has a restaurant across the main entrance that offers 15% discount to hotel guests. Free high-speed wifi.
The guest room was as advertised - spacious and clean. There is a mini fridge and microwave, plus coffee making facilities in the room. There was even a small balcony with chairs. The hotel is nice and new. There's a coin laundry on-site which was helpful to us. The restaurant across the parking lot looked popular but wasn't able to try it out.
I love staying at best western the only thing that was missing was providing breakfast! but other than that the hotel was nice really close to the airport and the beach and all the family events centers
Nice outdoor pool and nice/new hotel. Always have a good stay. My complain is always the same: there is no restaurant/breakfast area at the hotel. The restaurant in front of the hotel is very bad. But the hotel is very well located so you can drive and within minutes, you can find a good restaurant. Rooms are very spacious and well illuminated.
Nice newly built and clean hotel. Friendly staff. Definitely one of the nicer hotels in the area. Workout room has a lot of new and good equipment Close and easy access to freeway. Ample parking. There is s Sports bar and restaurant Nextdoor. .
Nice hotel but the online description makes it sound like there is a restaurant in the hotel. Truth is it is across the driveway, GOODIES. Okay food but since I was here on business it was a bit inconvenient.
Must have a better approach about pricing. Overall the hotel well-maintained, host were polite, housekeepers were excellent and thoroughly clean, the food was average in security was cordial . Hotel entrance and grounds are well-kept
This facility was the nicest Best Western that I have ever stayed at. It was clean, spacious, and the staff was great. It can not be beat for the price! We had an event at the San Diego Convention Center, but everything near there was outrageous in price. This hotel was less than 6 miles away, and very close to the freeway, which made it very easy to get where we were going. I was very happy with this Best Western, and I will definitely be back!
We chose this hotel for rating and price and were glad we did. Very nice, clean hotel. Staff was very friendly and we liked that it was easy to get to and from where we wanted to go (had a rental car...not much within walking distance). We weren't too impressed with the restaurant next door and we disappointed that we didn't know there was a Freddies burger joint only a few blocks away.
We stayed for 4 nights in April & had a pleasant experience. Our suite was spacious and clean, with a location that has very easy access to the highway & not a far drive from Downtown San Diego. The pool was small, but heated, which meant we could swim even on a cool day. The staff was very helpful and accommodating. The hallways were very loud at night, but that could have more to do with lots of families staying there and not related to the hotel itself. Really wish there was breakfast included; would have made it a near-perfect stay!
Without hesitation, I highly recommend this hotel. Everything is worth top marks - facilities, cleanliness, service, rates. Any time that you pass by the front desk, they are not only ready to help in any way possible, they are very friendly. They have thought of so many little things that add to the comfort of the guests. If they haven't already thought of something - you just need to ask and they will do their best to fulfill the request. We stayed for a week - and would definitely come again.
Very pleasant hotel, clean, good size room, good facilities and pleasant helpful staff, and the important one for me while travelling, solid reliable fast wifi. Close to freeway and public transport. Picked this hotel because of the reviews and was not disappointed. A bonus is Goodies Bar next door, where you can get a cold drink with the locals, and something to eat.
Check-in was fast and easy. The gentleman who checked us in even gave us recommendations of places in town to go for dinner, touring, and nightlife. All staff members we came across during our stay were very friendly. Our room was VERY clean when we checked in and throughout our 3-night stay. The pool and jacuzzi area was also clean, as well as the fitness room. Excellent stay overall, no complaints !
The staff were very helpfull. At check in the employee at the front desk informed us that the restaurant nrxt door has live music till 10:30pm and was wondering if we would like to change rooms. That was nice and the place was very clean. Pool was well kept and the cleaning staff were very friendly. Would stay there again when in town.
The hotel was located incredibly close to the highway which made travelling in and out of San Diego super easy. What really made our stay was the helpfulness of Jeff who would offer assistance with where to go; where to eat and even helped us when our car began mis-functioning! Thanks Jeff :-) The room was a good size and we had a balcony overlooking the pool. We mainly used the hotel as a base for exploring which made it perfect.
i brought my girlfriend who i had re-united with after being apart for 35 years to this nice modern facility and we had a nice quiet room on the top floor. The service was excellent top to bottom. Nice jacuzzi, heated pool.We had a great view of the south bay with 5 windows side by side. The best part was our concierge, Cheyenne who was so patient and accomadating, as was her supervisor. We came back especially because of her. Thanks to all!
This was a good place to stay but why do I continually get the room farthest down the hall and I get a lot of handicapped room with no tub. The front desk said I had a sliding door going to the pool. We'll instead I got a parking lot with a doggie no pooping sign. No Continental breakfast but you can save 15% off at Goodies right next door.
Easy to find as just by I5. Bright reception area and room. Very clean - taps were shining! Fast internet. We arrived without luggage (delayed in transit) and desk staff offered toiletries to keep us going. Pool small but gets full sunshine. Goodies restaurant across driveway can provide all meals and there is a discount for hotel guests. Denny's is nearby and walkable. Easy walk to marina which seems to be recently remodelled and is landscaped with seating bear by. Bedroom was big with king size bed, armchair and footstool, another comfy chair as well as desk. Couldn't fault this hotel.
Enjoyed two comfortable nights at BW. Offering a breakfast would have been a bonus. The hotel was convenient to many local attractions. Staff at front desk were helpful to suggesting restaurants etc. We would recommend and choose Best Western for future travel.
This is a great location, especially if you have a car as it's just off the interstate. The room was really clean, internet was quick and the heated pool and spa were well maintained - couldn't fault the staff. Goodies bar and restaurant is located right next door and was perfect to eat at - thanks for a memorable stay to finish off our holiday in America.
I chose this hotel from high rated reviews I read. This was my Thanksgiving treat (for myself, solo trip, just to relax and unwind…) and this 2 nights/3 days trip to this hotel did not fit for my purpose. Hotel itself is nice, quiet from crowds and city, and very easy access to freeway (interstate 5). If you plan to do lots of San Diego sightseeing, this hotel should be great. Also “Free Parking” is great! (that was one of the reasons I chose this hotel). Staying San Diego downtown hotels with $30 plus / night parking fee is a log, so free parking is really appreciated. From the review, I thought I read, this hotel had Coffee machines every floor, but I guess that was discontinued, bummer….That was another reasons I chose this hotel, but I did not see any free coffee. I am a huge, major coffee drinker, and easy access to coffee is a must. First morning, I drove all the way to Starbuck just to get coffee, and saw this hotel put out coffee machine only in the morning (right? I was not informed so I did not know!) but one machine near front desk, with long lines with people waiting to get a cup….well, it did not work out for me anyway. My room coffee maker did NOT work properly! It took forever and my room was filled with terrible “burned smell”, was not good. Small refrigerator was in a strange location (right behind the door) and it was inconvenient to open/shut. I did not think that was the right place for the fridge. Also somehow, I thought they should have the “Freezer” part, and I purchased a couple of ice cream bars to enjoy later on, but well, this fridge did not have freezer section on top, so my ice cream pops were all melted down, and I ended up throwing everything away ($10 gone). In room coffee tasted quite bad, and as I said, the machine did not work. First of all, when I reserved the room via Hotels.com, I specifically requested the room with Patio. And I did NOT get that. I did NOT have any kind of view, other than “Roof” view??? I was very disappointed, actually in the tub, more than disappointed about this. First day, I went to use Hot Tub. 4 or 5 very young kids were playing in hot tub and going round and round, and kept on asking me to move. Also they kept shutting down the jet. Eventually it stopped working, so I just left. Bad experience. Also the tub was “DIRTY!!!!” There was all kinds of heavy yucky stuff stuck around the tub (inside) and it was so nasty. The tub definitely needs to be cleaned up for safety (health risk?) It was that dirty. 2nd day, I also stopped by the tub during the day, when no one was around. Well, there was no towel available, so I tried to get attention from anyone who were working at the hotel, asking for towels, was not a good experience either. I used fitness center. They did not have my favorite machine (stairs), also Stationary bike did NOT work. It was not even hooked up with the outlet. I was so thirsty during the work out, so I wished there were some kind of water service there….I was going to use the fitness center on the last day, but I did not because of broken bike and no water….Room was clean, cozy. Bed was nice. My room was somehow, forgotten from house cleaning though!!! I left the room in the morning hoping, they would clean while I was gone. It was not done, so I also left the room in the afternoon for a couple of hours, again, hoping they would clean, so that I could relax for the rest of the afternoon. When I finally got back to the room around 4:30pm, it was not cleaned. So I gave one more chance and waited a bit….I finally called the front desk and asked when could I have expected the clearing. Well, I was informed that house keeping folks were already left and I could get some clean towels!!! I was so upset, and asked, “so that means my room was forgotten???” then front desk told me that there might be still some people who could clean and would send someone….I was not happy for this whole thing. It was not professional and acceptable in my opinion, since I was paying for the room. So I had to leave the room from 5pm again, sitting outside with the magazines, but it was so dark and I could not even read. This missed house cleaning was really a bad part of my trip this time. The best thing happened during this stay, this morning (last day of my stay), I went to get the coffee (since I learned there was a coffee in the early morning) around 7am. This nice, wonderful lady (another hotel guest) kindly started to talk to me. She made my day. Thank you. Nice, clean hotel in a quiet location. But NOTHING is around (nothing in walking distance), no views. Dirty tub, forgotten house keeping….for the person like me, wanted to get away for Thanksgiving (solo) just to super relax, it did not serve my purpose, and I don't recommend for those who would just go to relax.
This Best Western is a great hotel for those who prefer to be somewhere between San Diego and Tijuana. Nice location not to far from the trolley line that can take you into San Diego or down to the border. The facility over all is clean and the staff are courteous. The hotel is quiet except for on the weekends when the bar and grill next door has a band outside on the patio. If you don't mind a little music then you will be ok. Always try to get a room with a balcony by the pool. Balconies are spacious with lounge chairs for sunning and a patio table and umbrella set up for those who prefer to stay shaded.
Really good staff who were very helpful when we needed info on San Diego or needed a plaster (band aid). Hotel is not far from the trolley line, has a small pool, gym and guest laundry. There's a diner/bar close by where there is a 15% discount for hotel guests. Would recommend.
The hotel is located in National City just off the highway in a somewhat industrial area of town. Nevertheless the property is new and maintained very well. Check-in was very efficient and took less than 5 minutes. I was given a room on the ground floor near the back of the building - very convenient as there is a side entrance making it easy to park and move stuff into the room. I was a tad afraid that a ground floor room would be noisy, especially since it was Saturday night and Goodies Bar was booming music. This was not a problem - some minor chatter outside but nothing overtly distracting. I guess if you're a super light sleeper request a room on the upper floors. The standard king bed room was well appointed, nice sized bathroom with lots of towel, large bed, good furniture and working space. Internet was decent speed for a hotel and free. Only drawbacks is that there is no breakfast included, but thankfully there are plenty of choices in the area. About 5 minutes away by car, there are about 4 or 5 fast food places, and 10 minutes away there are several malls and restaurants. Downtown SD is about 20 minutes away by car on the highway. One knock I have with the hotel is that housekeeping comes quite early ... they seem to like to finish cleaning the rooms by about 11AM - Noon (perhaps this is because I was on the ground floor). One day, they did miss one clean up because I left around 10:30AM. Nevertheless subsequent cleanings were done well and everything was neatly made. I got an excellent price on the room and I am very happy with the hotel. Would recommend to others for family, business, or other travel.
Stayed here for 2 nights with family, had a 2 double bed suite! the room was spacious with ample space for 3 people to move around easily! the bathroom was modern with marble tiles and big enough to move around also! the beds were comfy, clean and the room smelled clean! how it should be! the property does have a pool and a fitness center! sadly no restaurant! but there is a bar/restaurant within walking distance of the place if you need to grab a bite. one negative aspect of this hotel is that it is not centrally located, it is about a 10 minute drive into downtown or where the heart of San Diego is! so commute can be somewhat of a disadvantage! but overall if that is not an issue then this place is great for short stay near the city.
Had a very large room that was nice and clean. The restaurant next door had a band on Friday night that we were told about. They were supposed to stop at 10:30, but it was more like 10:45. Luckily no kids and we weren't overly tired so we just stayed up until the music stopped. If you have kids or need to go to bed before 10:30 request a room AWAY from the parking lot when you reserve your room. We also couldn't get the A/C unit to work in our room, but didn't ask for it to be fixed.
Spacious and clean hotel. Came with a fridge and a microwave. Very friendly and informative staff. Staff told us best places to eat. In an industrial area. The marina aspect should not be included in the advertisement of the hotel. There are no marina views and the marina is a minimum of 15 minute walk from the hotel. When u get to the marina it is basically a military base and you cannot get close to it or enjoy views from the water. It is close to an in and out, starbucks, and Chipotle.. within walking distance.
Hotel looks nice as you enter, but that is where the nice part ends. Upon check in was told the hotel was sold out, so they were putting my family with a young child in a room facing the bar that had a loud concert going on and they would be playing music until 10:30 pm. No choice to move to a quiet room that night. Just this is what you get and deal with it. Upon entering the room it wasn't just loud it was like having a concert in your room. I could hear word for word all the lyrics of the songs and what people in the crowd were shouting. It was so loud you couldn't even hear the TV or try to have a conversation. No way anyone including my child could go to sleep before 10:30 when the music was supposed to stop due to the volume of the music. The base shook the room. Then music also went past 10:30pm. I called to complain about the noise level and how inconvenient it was and just got rude treatment by the desk clerk (young male), who did not care and had no concern about the loud music. He just said things like "I don't understand how it is inconvenient?" and "we told you at check in." Yeah, we were told at check in, but had no choice to change rooms. It was more of here is going to be the worst hotel noise ever and deal with it. He had no solutions other than if we came before noon the next day they might let us change rooms. Wow, so put my morning plans on hold, pack up my luggage and maybe get to change rooms. In the morning I did go to the front desk to inquire about changing rooms and was told they didn't currently have rooms, but I could pack up my stuff and they would hold it in storage and move it into a room later. Again, very inconvenient (but apparently not to the prior nights desk clerk who doesn't understand inconvenience). The desk clerk in the morning Zoe did at least seem sympathetic and tried to help more even though her solutions were not better and were still inconvenient. I would have been less angry if I had got here the night before. However, she did promise to sign me up to Best Western rewards and add enough points for a free night stay and guess what she signed me up and added 0 points. So no free night added for my horrible experience and rude treatment. So, now I will just get annoying Best Western emails to keep reminding me of the horrible experience. I have stayed at many hotels and many Best Westerns and this was by far the worst even. Stay away from this hotel if you like quiet and sleeping. Its the Russian roulette of hotels. Maybe you will get a quiet room like others have and maybe you won't. Maybe you will get a concert in your room. Maybe you will get a helpful concerned desk clerk and maybe you won't. You will get a rude uncaring one. Don't stay here!!! Note: I stayed at another hotel for 3 nights prior and they will be getting a 5 star excellent rating for quality and service! We went from an amazing hotel stay to the worst ever!

October 27, 2016 Dear LBJ66, We sincerely apologize for your experience at our property and we appreciate you providing us with feedback. We take great pride in being one of the top hotels in the San Diego area, and we want to personally apologize that your recent stay did not reflect this. Upon check-in, our front desk staff did inform you that your room would hear the live music from the restaurant. Our staff did our best to provide you with the best room that was as quiet as possible. Upon hearing of your complaint regarding the live music, we asked the restaurant to lower the volume of the music and the music did stop at 10:30pm. Unfortunately, our front desk staff was not able to provide you with an immediate room move that evening due to room availability. However, the following day we were more than happy to provide you with a complimentary upgrade to a suite for the remainder of your stay with us. Your satisfaction is important to us and we use the feedback our guests provide us to implement improvements and offer a better experience for our guests in the future. Again, we express our sincerest apologies regarding your stay, and we hope to be able to welcome you back to our hotel soon. Sincerely, Best Western Plus Marina Gateway Hotel
I highly recommend this hotel. The rates are reasonable & the hotel has a good lobby experience and the rooms are just as good. I've been in hotels where you have a good lobby presentation but the rooms are old & run down. It's clean too! Their restaurant has excellent food & the prices are medium range but ample. We've stayed here 3X's already and we're coming back next year. It's a perfect location for us...close enough to go into Baja and close enough to visit Downtown SD and the Seaport.
Exceptionally clean hotel. The lobby, rooms & common areas were well kept & clean. Free parking.. Nice pool. Great for family & kids... Staff was professional & courteous. Great job to staff & management. Would recommend...
Booked this hotel through a travel agent and everything went smoothly. Comfortable clean room, with good staff. Restaurant across the parking lot was not good but other then that it was an enjoyable experience and I would recommend this hotel.
We were really welcomed and assisted by Francesca on the front desk, someone who helped us with directions, solutions, and suggestions, every time we needed any in our three day stay. Friendly staff in general, being Manny very attentive in our check out. Huge, comfortable room, equipped with microwave and fridge, which provided us with the infrastructure to prepare quick meals. The only downside, at least in our room, was the shower that didn't run enough water. This hotel is set in a good location from which we could get fast and easily anywhere we wanted. Definitely would stay there again.
I did book this hotel for a conference downtown. Using the trolley it took me an hour roundtrip to the hotel. So the location was a little bit of a bummer for me. Overall the hotel was nice and the staff was great. I will admit that the walls were thin. I did wake up a couple of times during the night due to noise, plus during the evening I could hear the TV of the room next door. Even with these slight minuses I would stay at this hotel if I was in the area again. The price was right and the location to the trolley did make it easy to get around if you took the time.
Came to stay for Twitch Con 2016 and it was a great stay. Rooms are clean and staff was friendly. Would highly recommend staying with kids. Great pool and hot tub. Restaurant is also great for coffe in the a.m. And then for dinner at night, with live music. Oh and you get 15% off with your room key. The convention center is about 10 minutes away.
Great location, service and staff but the AC in our room was really loud and it would randomly turn itself off all the time. Our room would also randomly shake in the morning, I'm not sure if there was because of an ongoing construction downstairs but it got frustrating after a few days. Overall, there were a few positives but I don't see myself staying here again.

October 4, 2016 Dear Art F, Thank you for staying at our hotel and for letting us know about your less than spectacular stay. We sincerely apologize that you did not experience full nights of restful sleep during your stay. We are dedicated to ensuring that you do have a good night's sleep when you stay with us. Our hotel is not currently experiencing any ongoing construction and we will try our best eliminate any of these noise concerns from our guest rooms.
Nice clean hotel located literally right off the freeway. Nice thick windows so you don't hear traffic. No breakfast but a nice little industrial K-cup machine in the lobby with like 10 different choices of drinks. Free Parking. A Restaurant and bar next door. I heard they give you 10% off food. I only had drinks and THEY DO NOT give 10% off drinks. Room also had a fridge and microwave. They do have vending machines on every floor, but only drinks. That's the only complaint I guess. They should have vending machines with chips and candy as well me thinks. I liked this hotel and would definitely stay again.
Excellently situated - fast access to the City of San Diego & all the attraction .Hotel room was clean nicely furnished .Staff was very helpful providing information about near by sightseeing * maps * bus services Amenities supply poor good value
So helpful. Hotel was clean and seemed very safe. Close to I5 so travel was very easy. Zoe was very helpful with "locals only" insights! The pool was warm. Starbucks and in n out were convenient. A little off the beaten path from all things tourist but easy enough with the closeness of I5.
We enjoyed our stay at the Best Western Marina in National City. The staff was friendly and informative. The rooms were clean and comfortable. Wifi was easy to access and the amenities were great as well. We would definitely stay here again !!
We needed to travel during the fall school semester and even though I brought all of the study material I needed I wasn't prepared as I thought. I showed up at the front desk in a panic needing to make some copies of histology slides from my textbook. Zoe was extremely helpful and willing to make all 10 of the copies I needed. She really saved me. There is so much to learn in this class and missing out on the few study days I was in San Diego would have been rough. Thanks again Zoe and the rest of the staff.
The price is very accommodating for the area. It's in a great location....you can get to just about everything within minutes! Very nice and clean. ZOE, the front desk attendant, is absolutely wonderful! We loved our stay there....would definitely stay again and recommend it to friends and family!
Make sure you ask where your room is. I had 306 and had a lovely view of a building. I was there for four nights and you think I would have warranted a better view. Other than that, the room was beautiful and the staff very friendly I do wish they offered continental breakfast, as the restaurant next door was so slow.
Great location and very nicely kept hotel in side and out. There are restaurants around and it's not hard to go down the street to find food anytime of the day. Great way to get on and off the HWY and not far from the outlet near the boarder. It's usually 10-15 mins to any tourist attractions in the area. Coffee station in the morning is a nice touch, would've been nice to offer fruit or cookies as well since there's no complimentary breakfast. We usually get free bottle of water in room in any of the plus BW we've stayed before, again something nice to do for those who are BW members. It was a perfect stay regardless, use the pool and gym it's kept clean and neat.
The hotel is in a good location with easy access to the freeway. The gentlemen who checked us in was very welcoming and informative. Our room was quiet and I love that the room had a sliding door because it gave us easy access to our car in the parking lot. The room was spacious and I love that we had access to two TVs. My biggest disappointment was the bathroom. One of the bath towels was torn and there was mildew between the bathroom tiles in the shower. I would stay here again, but housekeeping and management just needs to pay attention to room details.
perfect locaton off I-5,very nice staff, very helpful, very nice lobby\\meeting area, very nice smelling, nice rooms, very clean bathroom, worst for me were the pillows(too small),the bed was very comfy, restuarant next door(goodies bar/grill)very good food, music on weekends, lot's of parking space..a/c unit a little noisy
I enjoyed my time here without any incident. Very relaxing and convenient location. I am very happy and will definitely return to this hotel. Came for my honeymoon with my husband and we do not regret. Highly recommend. Thank you Best Western PLUS
The hotel kept very nice and clean. The staff was always helpful when needed. Location was a bit further than expected but you can get to any part of downtown within around 15 mins. Using uber pool will cost around 8-15 bucks a trip. The hotel doesnt provide breakfast like most best westerns do but do offer a 15% discount to the restaurant next door which have very good breakfast and good choice for dinner and happy hour drinks. Also less than 5 mins away walking from In N Out and a dennys down the street. The rooms are clean and beds are ok and comfortable. There's a train that runs through the back of the hotel but only heard it in the mornings around 10 or 11 and just a couple of times, so dont worry about being woken up late at night or early morning.
2nd time to stay here at this hotel, close to everything and also near a metro transit line. Very clean and relaxing stay. Pool area was clean and well kept. Would highly recommend if visiting San Diego.
This hotel was easy to find good location. Pleasant, helpful, professional staff. Rooms are clean and comfortable. Has a nice restaurant on site not owned by hotel but they give 10% discount if you show your room key.
we stayed for one night, never had the chance to explore the whole hotel and its facilities. we were welcomed by jeff at the front desk. good service, very quick check in and check out process. he'll take the initiative to provide you with all the information about the hotel and the recommended places to visit around the area without even asking him. i was provided with the list of places with the address and driving directions. the room was great, spacious enough for the 3 of us. very clean and comfortable bedding. there was sufficient bathroom supplies and clean white towels. there is a coffee maker, coffee making supplies and small refrigerator. there is flat iron & ironing board. there are plenty of parking spaces available free of charge. the only complain i had was that in the morning, 2 staff from the housekeeping department knocked our door at 2 different times to do the cleaning. i believe the housekeeping department should be briefed on the departure dates of the guest so they can schedule the correct time when to clean the room instead of bothering the guests in the early hours of the morning. i brought this issue to the front desk, they apologized and assured me that important information will be communicated to the concerned department. generally, this is a very good hotel and will still stay there if i ever go back to San Diego.
Nice hotel with average rooms. Location is near the base which is a plus. The restaurant near the hotel offers a discount during your staff. The restaurant has average service and food. The service was EXCELLENT. The complete staff has extremely helpful from check-in to check-out.
I've stayed at Best Western Plus Hotels in the past, this one is extremely disappointing. The bedding was dingy and I question if the sheets had any been changed. It's located in an industrial area, so lots of traffic and the walls and windows are not well insulated. I've had quieter rooms near airports. In the wee hours of the morning, I could hear a passing train, a baby crying in the hotel and a passing motorcycle--in that order. It's better suited for a business traveler or those who will be out and about most of the day/night and just need a place to sleep. As I type this, another motorcycle howls pass my window. If I'm ever in this area, I won't stay here again.

August 22, 2015 Dear Michdivadoc, We are extremely sorry for the inconveniences you experienced during your recent stay with us. As you noted this case was out of the ordinary and our reviews show guest satisfaction is our most important goal. We can assure you that our bed sheets are definitely changed daily. Your satisfaction is important to us and we will be using the feedback you gave us to implement improvements and to ensure we offer a better experience for our guests in the future. We stayed at this hotel for a girls weekend out of the heat of the Arizona Desert. What a gem it was! We frequent San Diego and often stayed on Hotel Circle. The hotels there are busy and charge for parking, and while convenient, don't live up to the price you pay. Marina Gateway is right off the freeway, far enough south of the city to get out of the busy tourist traffic but just a small drive to the main attractions. The hotel is in an industrial/navy location and it felt clean and safe. Just on the other side of the highway is some places to eat, like Denny's, In and Out and Jersey Mike's or you can try Goodies right there in their parking lot. A little pricey at $16.99 for a breakfast buffet but they offer a great menu and good food. The executive suite room was very clean, well equipped with a microwave and fridge. We had a private balcony, equipped with two chairs to sit and enjoy the ocean breeze. The bay is close to the hotel, but our room was facing the highway and parking lot, with a small view of the bay from the right. The room was mostly quiet, however, Goodies had some loud music going on that you could hear late into the evening. Beds were firm, you may find them slightly uncomfortable but that is subjective and can't accurately be reviewed. Parking is free! And there is ample parking available! Well lit lots and all around the hotel made it very easy to park, even at night when most guests were in. They also have a nice pool area, a bit small but heated for year round swimming. The gym offers a few machines and free weights. The highlight of the stay was the service. From check in to check out we encountered several employees who treated us so kindly and with great respect. They offered us suggestions on places to see and eat and even walked us out to the fliers to hand us directions. Above and beyond! We will be staying here from now on for all our San Diego adventures!
The hotel feels very clean and the heated pool is really nice. We have really enjoyed our stay. The parking is free and easy, convenient location, close to highway. There is no free breakfast. The heated pool is above 80 degree and the hot tub temperature is good as well. My kids really enjoy the pool and the pool temperature is perfect. The restaurant 10 meters away is very convenient, it has life music some dinner night and we see people are dancing with the music, brings a vacation mood. They also provided a crib for small kids. The crib is OK.
Literally a minute off the main freeway makes this hotel a great springboard to explore San Diego at a lower price than similar hotels in main areas. Actually getting to this hotel is easier due to less congestion which we experienced often in the city. The rooms are spacious, clean and staff seem friendly. Plenty of free parking. There is NO BREAKFAST but there is a complimentary take away coffee service in the mornings which can boost your morning. Next door is GOODIES CAFE which offers breakfast and other meals along with room service. Show them your room card in the restaurant and you'll get 15% off your bill. TIP : in the evening the pool area can get rowdy and there is live music across the way at Goodies cafe on weekends so if you are after a quiet stay, request a room away from these areas. I would suggest the rooms facing the port.
I enjoyed my stay at Best Western Plus Marina Gateway Hotel in National City, CA. The facility is new, clean, well kept up and beautifully landscaped. The rooms are spacious, pleasant, quiet and comfortable. Family Friendly. Great place to relax. Nice pool and exercise room, a pleasant place to walk around and enjoy the views. A short walk to several restaurants. I highly recommend this hotel for business or pleasure.
This was a decent hotel. Check in was nice and quick. The elevators were broken and only one worked so that took a while. Other than that there's a restaurant right next door that is decent. The room was clean and comfortable.
Always enjoy our stay at this hotel. Staff friendly and accommodating! Clean and comfortable rooms. Free parking - always a bonus! Restaurant on site - convenient! Short drive to other restaurants and markets. Not far from border as well as other San Diego attractions!
Although this hotel is a little pricey for most Best Westerns I have stayed at, it is worth it. The appearance of the hotel is very nice. The staff are all very pleasant and helpful. The double queen I stayed in was large enough and everything I required was available. Even though they serve no breakfast, the Goody's Pours and Grill, on site, had a really fantastic buffet brunch on Sunday, with many selections to choose from and at a very reasonable price. My wife and I stay at many Best Westerns throughout the year and I must say that the Best Western PLUS Marina Gateway Hotel is the finest we have ever stayed at. Totally satisfied. By the way, access to Padres games during the rush hour was a breeze as we were going against the traffic and it was just 12 minutes from the hotel to the Padres Parkade parking, 1 block from the ballpark. Also, I might add, that arriving here from Arizona on I8 is a breeze by taking the 125/54 loop around the SE side of town. We avoided all of the traffic congestion in San Diego.
I booked this hotel for my stay during Comic-Con 2016 (Jul 20-25th). From the beginning to the end of my stay I received nothing but helpful and friendly service. This also includes when I called days earlier to ask a question about my reservation. Friendly service over the phone. My room was comfy and clean. And after walking around downtown San Diego in the heat, coming back to a comfy and clean room felt wonderful. I only wish I had taken advantage of the heated pool and also the workout area. The restaurant next door, Goodies, was fine. Good food. And In-N-Out was down the street. Drive to downtown was less than 10 min. I would say the only downer was maybe wishing a gas station was slightly closer to the hotel. But that's nothing. When I come back to San Diego, I would stay at this hotel again.

July 31, 2016 Dear Melissa S, Thank you for staying with us and posting such a positive review. We appreciate your compliments and feedback in regards to our service, cleanliness and staff. It was a pleasure to have you as our guest, and we hope to see you soon in the future. Sincerely, Best Western Plus Marina Gateway Hotel
We stayed here for one night, and the hotel itself is perfectly fine for that purpose. When we called to get a rate and a availability we spoke to Zoe. My wife and I were both very impressed with her positivity and helpfulness, so we booked a room for the night needed. When we checked in I got to meet Zoe, and she was a pleasure to deal with. This Hotel is lucky to have her as an employee.
We needed a room that would accommodate a family of five. Affordable, clean and comfortable. Within walking distance to public transportation that took us around San Diego, including Old Town ($7.00 per person per day unlimited). Within walking distance to restaurants. Area is not that nice, but it was a good place to crash at night. Would stay here again. Only Con: had problems with the safe, and had to call reception three times to have it reset.
Stayed at this Best Western for 5 nights over 4th of July weekend. Motel is relatively new with spacious lobby, ample parking and attractive rooms. Amenities include free wifi, workout room, outdoor pool with hot tub, a lobby ATM and coffee machine. Clean and comfortable rooms included small refrigerator and microwave. Best part of the stay was the stellar service provided by the front desk staff. They happily answered all questions and provided great recommendations for meals and fireworks. Note that this Best Western is about 15 minutes from downtown San Diego. It has ready access to I-5, and there are decent restaurants within a 5-10 minute drive (ask the front desk for suggestions). Nearest is a Goodie's across the parking lot, and a Denny's and In n Out Burger are a short walk using the freeway underpass. This motel is great for travelers who have their own transportation, although the 24th Street trolley stop is only a 5-10 minute walk. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay!
Just returned from our weekend stay at the Best Western. Very pleased with our stay. Free parking, friendly staff (shout out to Manny @ FD for awesome service). Definitely would recommend renting a car as the area itself doesn't have a lot going on. But it is located right near the freeway entrance and everything is an easy drive on I-5. Airport and downtown/Gaslamp only 15 mins away. Mission Beach, SD Zoo, La Jolla all within 25 mins away. There is a restaurant in the parking lot called Goodie's that serves sports bar type food and it was very good, if you mention you're staying on the property, they'll give you a discount. My only complaint is the pillows were too hard (I know this wouldn't be a problem for some) and the gym facility had no water cooler, sani wipes to wipe equipment and the hand sanitizer was empty. Other than that I would stay again. A great choice if you have a car/access to transportation and want to stay close to SD without paying the expensive prices!
Beds were comfy with good firmness to cushion ratio. Very clean and lots of tv options. There is a pool and hot tub. We tried the hot tub and it was nice. There is no breakfast so be prepared. There are many healthy eats around. Staff was professional. We will stay here again. We were here last week June 2016,two adults, one teenager. It was a road trip.
This hotel looks brand new. Very elegant decor! Cleans rooms! Located only 15 min away from airport and 15 min away from downtown! Very friendly staff, Jeff at the front desk offered to call us a taxi to take us to airport at 5am. They also gave us a complementary roll a bed for our daughter since they only had king size rooms available. It has a restaurant across that offers , breakfast, lunch and dinner and even room service! The rooms have a fridge and a microwave. Rooms also have a safe!
This hotel was clean but had no restaurant or bar inside the hotel, however there was one located in the parking lot. Conveniently located close to the interstate but nothing really within walking distance. The day we checked in there was a strong floral fragrance which was overbearing to the point it gave my wife a migraine. I went down and spoke to the front desk and they noted this and said they would need to have maintenance look into it. We made multiple calls and received the same response but the fragrance remained. They do offer free coffee but this to had a down side. Our third day into or nine day stay I went down and had placed my fit bit down and forgot to pick it up realizing this literally 15 minutes afterwards. We called the hotel and asked if anyone had turned a Fitbit in and they said nothing was turned in. When asking about looking into the security video they stated that would require we contact the police. Aside from having to use stairs to come and go from our room and donating my Fitbit the time in San Diego was a great family experience. Upon check out when asked how our stay was I let them know we where disappointed in the fact that nothing appeared to be done address the fragrance or willingness assist finding missing property. The only response was "I'm really sorry about that" and nothing more than that. For us future trip plans likely will not have this franchise included.

July 11, 2016 Dear Hud P, We sincerely apologize for your less than spectacular stay at our hotel and we appreciate you providing us with feedback. Our hotel does have a full service restaurant on property, Goodies Bar and Grill. They are open for breakfast, lunch and dinner. They also provide room service for our guests. Our hotel is only two blocks or 0.25 miles north of Pier 32 Waterfront Grill and Pepper Park. Our hotel is also only two blocks west of In & Out Burger, Starbucks, Chipotle, Goody's Sushi, and Denny's. Upon check-in, our front desk staff did our best to inform your group of your room's exact location and the best and easiest methods to access your room. During your stay our staff did adjust the fragrance in our ventilation systems and we want to apologize this was not promptly communicated with you. Upon hearing of your report of a lost item our staff did our best to locate the item. Unfortunately, our hotel cannot legally allow any person to view our security cameras.
Great stay. Service was good, hotel is clean and modern. No breakfast is probably the greatest negative (although you can pay for breakfast in a restaurant across the street). Location isn't the prettiest but relatively close to everything (with a car). Would definitively stay again.
My girlfriend and I are from a small town and a little (okay, a LOT) nervous about walking from the train station 3 blocks away, to the hotel at 12:30am. The front desk clerk, Daniel, was so kind to send Jesus to come and get us, and he refused to take our $20 tip earlier (as it was all the cash we had), nor the $3 we had remaining when we returned. What a sweet nice man who made us feel very safe and like we were just family he was picking up. Definately would stay here again!!
A friend and I are staying at the Best Western PLUS Marina Gateway Hotel and just wanted to give a shout out to the front desk Managers: Russell, Wilson and Daniel for helping us find fun experiences to try in San Diego. Daniel even went as far as to make sure we had safe transport back from the Gaslamp District after midnight when we got back (using the Trolley). Jesus Hortada was our driver and he was so kind and warm, very professional and not in the least put out at the late hour he was picking us up from the station. We were so grateful to have been so well taken care of as we explored the area, We know our trip was greatly enhanced by these very kind employees and hope that their Supervisors are aware of what great and dedicated men they have in their service. I would highly recommend this clean, beautiful hotel to anyone!
This is a great place to stay if your in the San Diego area and don't want to be in the downtown district. It's an easy drive from the airport and very easy to find. but yet close enough to enjoy the nightlife in the city. the staff is friendly and will do whatever it takes to make your stay enjoyable. the rooms are roomy, beds are comfortable and the price includes free internet access. Across the parking lot is a restaurant/bar and if your staying at the hotel they will give you discount on your purchase by showing your room key. Available services include a Business center, Workout room, Pool, Spa and walking paths. Views from the northside upper floors are of the bay of if you prefer- there are rooms with balcony's available, Some of the lower floor rooms are pet friendly and have direct access from the walkout patios. So if you want a good value relaxing place to stay, give it a try.
Arrived in the San Diego after driving down from LA after Amtrak cancelled our train. The ride's about 2h30m in very light traffic and would recommend it again. The hotel's got a great feel and vibe. It's labeled 3-stars but definitely felt closer to a 4 or 4.5. There was plenty to like and enjoy about the hotel and enjoyed the stay. The room was very nice and the front desk was very friendly and offered unyielding help and service from the moment of check in. Checked in and got the wifi access code and key cards with no hassle. Room was a large and good size for the two of us, clean and nice (queen beds, sadly). Bathroom was pretty awesome and large Here are my pros and cons: Pros: - Extremely friendly staff. - Sizable room and view options! - Pretty close to transit. - To said transit, though the short's fairly short, they offer a free shuttle to and from the local blue line stop. - Close to a few cheap restaurants, in n out, denny's etc. - A great little workout center. - A wonderful pool and spa area. - Very functional business center, was able to do some work and make print-outs no problem. - Bedroom safe we stored our passports in. - Room service! But didn't use. - Across the parking lot is a pretty ok resto. - Generally an awesome spot, albeit a little ways off. - Fairly good A/C unit, strong, - The shower soaps were extremely good. I asked for a few to leave with. Now on to the cons: - The bed was... sleepable. Haha, but we hopped in it in excitement... Do not jump in those beds, had like an inch give, not very soft, but tolerable. - For the price and relative amenities, We expected a breakfast (like some other Best Westerns we've been to). But, alas, no breakfast here. Some room service and an ok place across the street, but nothing complementary. That's about it. Took a lyft a few times to the hop-on and hop-off area, and that was always about 5-7$ train went straight to the airport for departure as well, and that was a short walk as well. Hope this review helps!
My family has stayed at another Best Western Plus before, and it's a decent place with a good price. We recently took the kids to the San Diego Zoo, and this hotel seemed decent enough. CHECK IN: So we pulled up the ole Odyssey and we were ready to get some sleep. Vegas to San Diego with young kids and an infant takes twice as long as normal. When I checked in, I was greeted by an android who had no facial expressions or vocal inflections. Wow, so futuristic! After finding a luggage cart, we were whisked away to our suite. After putting the kids to bed and unloading the luggage, my wife pointed out some curly hairs in the tub. I called the front desk and they sent someone to clean it about 20 min later. ROOM: The room is ok in size. Two queen beds and a bathroom. It was fairly modern. The temp control is easy to use but the fan on the a/c is LOUD. Like a large blow dryer. But that was cool for us because it kept the baby asleep. The shower's water pressure was fine. Not the best but it works. PARKING: Parking is on property but hard to find anything close to the door. Not that big of a hotel though, so no beed to walk too far. In summary, this place is fine. Decent place for a decent price. It's also 10 min from the zoo.
This is hands down one of the best hotels I have stayed at. The rooms were so incredibly clean and the staff was so quick to attend to anything we needed and they were so friendly! The rooms were very nice and the internet was fast! It was a beautiful hotel looked completely remodeled. The pool was great and clean. I cant say enough about the staff at this hotel though, ive never encountered nicer hotel staff in my years of travel! We will definetly be back!
The best location for the price, close to downtown, Imperial Beach, and close enough to the border while away from the hustle and bustle. Bring your own pillow though, the pillows currently are too small and too hard.
No breakfast included. Nice Property in bad neighborhood. Friendly staff. Room service is supposed to be offered but is not. That is all as I have nothing else to contribute. Pool is nice. Keys stop working on day of check out way before check out time.
We stayed here for a week while on vacation to San Diego area, upon arrival we were helped by Zoe and she was awesome and through the week she took good care of anything we needed, she made some suggestions to hidden gems around the city for food and things to do off the beaten path. Besides Zoes awesome service the hotel is very clean, the rooms are nice and spacious at least our 2 bed suite was. Had a separate area with a table and couch and tv away from beds for dining or end of the night viewing without laying in bed to do so. Beds were on the firmer side which we enjoyed and the sheets were nice, not the rough or paper thin ones you normally come across at hotels, the pool and hot tub area were always clean and stocked with fresh clean towels. They also have a nice self service laundry room if needed for a longer stay.
I really enjoyed staying at this hotel, the rooms are nice, the location is easy to access, nice restaurante bar just in front and above all, very nice staff. If I come back to this area I will stay here again.
To echo other people's comments, the staff was super friendly and helpful! I dealt with three different people in three different instances, and all were courteous and were great with providing details about local transit, places to eat etc. Parking was a bit of an issue the one night as there was a big event at Goodies next door (great food there btw) but otherwise, we had an awesome stay!!
This was my first trip to California and I was not disappointed. The hotel and its staff was extremely nice. The location was perfect for what we wanted to do in San Diego. I would gladly recommend this hotel.
I've driven by this hotel many times on the way to launch my boat at Pepper Park launch ramp which is less than one mile away. This hotel has a great location if you like being close to the water, which I do. My one disappointment was the lack of a breakfast, something I have grown to expect having to spend 100 nights a year in a hotel. The price was reasonable for the San Diego area. I would stay here again.
The staff was very helpful and the hotel was nice and clean. I would stay there again and recommend the hotel to friends and family. The location was ok, but had a nice bike path that lead to the beach. The restaurant left much to be desired, but didn't affect my opinion of the hotel.
If you are in San Diego on a budget, this hotel is an excellent choice. It is located just south of downtown, near the Navy Base, but is also very convenient to the trolley stop which can take you into downtown San Diego for a nominal fee (much cheaper & less stressful than trying to drive downtown!). It is also very convenient to freeway access & about 1 hour quick ride to the mountains for hiking & day tripping! The only thing I'm not keen on are the too soft pillows & the bed could be a little less firm. But if that's your thing, then you'll love this hotel.
This hotel is just outside of San Diego, easy to access from I5. It is not far from downtown, maybe a 15 - 20 min car ride, depending on traffic. The area is quiet and does not have nice restaurants or sightseeing, but it provides a good, cost-effective base to explore San Diego and vicinity. The hotel has a guest laundry, which was very handy for us after a week of tenting in the national parks. The hotel staff is super-nice, the rooms are clean, big and comfortable.
It is outside of downtown San Diego and right off of I5. The staff is so friendly a day helpful. Got an early check in and after a flight it was nice to relax. The rooms are spacious and bed was comfy. Pool area is small but still a nice to relax in. If you forget toiletries, we forgot a toothbrush, they provided one for you. The hotel is very clean and I would highly recommend it. Next door restaurant gets loud on the weekends with bands but it was fun to join in the festivities. Overall a great hotel and staff is amazing to work with.
I really liked the king suite I was able to book at the last minute. It was quiet, spacious, and was nicely decorated with ample and comfortable furniture. A little disappointed in the water pressure and the toiletries, but it was very comfortable bed and I had a good, safe, comfortable night there.
Got 2 nights at this hotel through a travel discounter. I was very impressed by the cleanliness and high standards of this hotel. Property is very well maintained, and parking lot is well lit. staff was very positive and organized. Overall very impressive hotel.
Awesome customer service!!! Zoe knows all the great spots t and has the best customer service, super nice. Would stay here again just because of her. My whole stay was great only thing is our room didn't cleaned the whole time we were here. Still would stay here again, thank you so much for everything Zoe.
Short of a slight mix up in room number upon check in our stay was wonderful. The staff were all very kind and answered all the questions we had. The room was very nice and clean. Also very spacious. We did not have any issues with noise from the live music on Friday night. but we were on the back of the hotel. Best place to be. Did not receive any apparent Diamond club perks. we will see when they award my points.
Stayed here 6 nights due to attending conference at convention center. When we asked front desk staff on direction to train station, he print out map showing us directions which I seldom came across in the other hotel in the past. All the staff are very friendly and explained things very clear. Room is spacious, clean, quiet and neat. Except the air con is a bit noisy when the motor starts. 10minutes walk to train (trolley) station and easy access to downtown. Do your own laundry if you stay here more than a couple of nights.
My friend and I stayed at this hotel for 3 nights. Upon check-in, I noticed how pretty and clean and modern the lobby was. The staff at reception was extremely courteous and professional. They could not accommodate our early check in request, however. Our room was spacious and clean and very comfortable. I slept better in that bed than I do at home... go figure. It was a very good experience, I definitely will stay there again. The location is not ideal, but not bad either.
Just what we expected from a BW Plus. Since I'm a light sleeper I asked for a room away from the freeway on the backside. When I entered the room it was actually facing the freeway so I kindly asked to change rooms. The polite staff found a room and mentioned "ah, I found you a room facing the back, looking out over the pool, so much better". It turned out to be overlooking a blind wall. And 5 centimeters of the pool... But hey, it was a quiet room and that was what I asked for. The outside pool is small but heated. There is a nice gym and the interior of the hotel is very decent. Staff was very helpful.
Beautiful property. professional staff.Very courteous. rooms were nicely appointed and very clean. property is very well maintained. Also very easy to get to and return to airport is a piece of cake. I would recommend this property to anyone who is visiting the SanDiego area.

May 25, 2016 Dear John P, Thank you for staying with us and posting such a positive review. We appreciate your compliments and feedback in regards to our property and staff. It was a pleasure to have you as our guest, and we hope to see you soon in the future. Sincerely, Best Western Plus Marina Gateway Hotel
After my last experience with a BW, I was a bit leery, but since Costco members get a discount and I had previously had a good experience with BW Woodland Hills, I thought I'd take a chance. This was the first stop on a two stop trip. The next stop would be the Woodland Hills/Van Nuys area of California. We arrived around 11:45 p.m. on a Wednesday evening to be greeted by friendly, and still energetic staff who explained where everything was. The room was clean (which is extremely important to me) and the beds comfortable. Again BW Ephrata, WA could learn a lesson from BW Marina Gateway on customer service. Would consider staying at this location again in next time I'm in the area.
We stayed at this place for my husband's Triathlon (TriRock) event on May 22nd. Last year we stayed at San Diego downtown area, it was expensive, difficult to park and a lot panhandling around. With a 6 miles distance (10 minutes' drive), we had a pleasant stay Best Western Plus Marina Gateway Hotel. The room was very clean and spacious with a small living area which was perfect to park my husband's bike and gears. The beds were super comfortable, temperature were perfect. There was a restaurant across the parking lot where we had a great Sunday brunch after my husband's race. However, their Saturday evening outdoor happy hour and live band could get pretty loud. The trick is to request a quiet room like we did, then it's not a problem. We stayed at room 222.
This hotel is a little farther south from downtown but with very easy access to the highway. Plus - great service, nice concierge . Modest but comfortable room, with "wake up" bugle call in the morning (from the marina) around 7 o'clock - we liked it. Overall very pleasant.
My husband and I were in National City to be close to a family member having open heart surgery. I needed help with so many items such as "extended stay", a second room to take care of the patient upon release, laundry facility, directions, so many things. Jeff Moser was especially so caring and helpful. I will forever be grateful. The room was so nice, super clean, great view, and very quiet. Will be returning as soon as possible. Great restaurant on the same property. Our
I was a little skeptical booking and staying here for a family vacation to San Diego. It was great and I would go back. No beach nearby but if you have a car everything is within 10-15 minutes. Clean, updated, friendly!!! Staff is very helpful and knowledgeable about the area and places to recommend.
Rooms were clean and comfortable. Staff was very helpful. Informed us about noise on Friday and Sat. nights from restaurant across the parking lot, and then quickly switched our rooms to the back of the hotel when I said it would be an issue. Overall, trouble-free relaxing stay.

We were in San Diego on business but staying here made it more of a vacation. Very nice rooms, very helpful and friendly staff. Manny at the front desk made me feel like he genuinely wanted to help us anyway he could to make our stay enjoyable. We will stay there again. My husband went and got dinner from Goodies(the restaurant right by the hotel) I would recommend going somewhere else to eat. The food was OK but the staff was very rude but that is not the hotels fault. We had a great stay other than that.
Location is in a more industrial area but it was good for what I needed. A little farther from the city but easy to access the 5 freeway to get to some bomb tacos. Zoe and Wilson at the front desk were awesome! Zoe happily recommended me some great places to eat around here and Wilson made sure I had a quiet location. Front staff deserves the ultimate praise in customer service. I even forgot my toothbrush but they quickly pulled one out before I even finished my sentence.

3 adults stayed 5 nights in mid April on a family vacation. Pros: The location was convenient to the airport, downtown, Balboa Park, etc. because of its easy interstate access. The hotel's lobby area, pool, exercise room and grounds appear clean and new. The desk staff and housekeeping were polite and efficient. The TV and internet worked fine. Cons: The hotel shares a parking lot and is very close to a restaurant which is open from breakfast through dinner. On weekend nights, the live music from the restaurant is VERY loud. So much so that the bass can be heard thumping even in the interior upper hallways. It does stop at 10:30 PM though thankfully. Make sure you request a room facing away from the restaurant if you want quiet. Also note that this hotel does not include free breakfast. 2 of the 3 chairs in our room were torn and badly stained, so much so that we covered the upholstered chair with towels and didn't sit in it because it looked so dirty.
Great hotel great staff, don't see me staying anywhere else when I travel to San Diego. Hotel was super clean, the pool was heated so it was used a lot. The hotel provided towels poolside. The restaurant "Goodies" that is on the same property had a wonderful staff and a wide ranch food for everybody's taste. They made you feel like you were home.

May 4, 2016 Dear Randy B, We are so happy to hear that you had such an enjoyable stay here at our hotel. Thank you so much for your thoughtful review of our hotel. We really appreciate you staying with us. We're delighted you enjoyed your stay here and were so positive about our cleanliness, amenities and restaurant. We also deeply appreciate your kind words about our staff and the service we deliver. Sincerely, Best Western Plus Marina Gateway Hotel
Stayed 2 separate stays within a week, and it is generally very good. I have noticed however, over the course of 2 separate stays within a week, although I have Diamond Elite status with Best Western, they apparently do not recognize membership in the program, and much less Diamond Elite status, nor do they extend any benefits that would normally be associated with Diamond Elite Status. I redeemed points for my room, and so it would appear that if you redeem points, they may strip you of your elite status for that stay. This would definitely be out of normal procedure under corporate program rules. Service was otherwise very good. They have no breakfast at all, with or without purchase, but do provide a 15% off coupon for the restaurant across the parking lot. The business center works great. The room itself was great, except the shower drain was clogged worse than I typically see in any property. Given the value I got with points, it was a very good value. If I had to pay money, it would definitely be overpriced by a large margin for what I got. Cash prices for this room are more on par with what I may find in Canada, where prices for rooms are typically much higher. I do plan on coming back.
Just ten minutes south of downtown San Diego this place was clean, updated and quiet. And we like quiet. The staff is amazing always welcoming and asking if they can help. Also Mr clean lives here. cleanliness is a top priority here. It is a bit remote but if you want quiet that it is. recommend taking streets to downtown area and avoid Interstate 5. It's actually a lot faster as there is little traffic on back roads. You can eat next door where food is reasonable and good. Or you can take a ten minute car ride and hit a restaurant of your choice. Would come here again.
The hotel was excellent, locations was good 15 .min to downtown,20 min to sea world,10 min to a mall. Restaurants next door food was good and reasonable. But just about 2 mile there a Denny and 7evelen.Not closed in with other hotels it separate, that was nice. Will stay there again.
The hotel was comfortable, the pool was nice, and the staff was very friendly and responsive. The location is very convenient to see the sights, right off of I-5. There is a restaurant across the parking lot, which has loud music on weekends, but we were on the other side of the building, and didn't hear it. Our room had a nice balcony overlooking the pool, which not all rooms do. Not sure where the "breakfast available" and "poolside service" came into the picture. Maybe it was the fact that restaurants can deliver and they bring towels to the pool. I would recommend the hotel, but don't think it is any better than a regular Best Western.
We stayed in this hotel for one week. From the check-in to the check-out the staff has been friendly and helpful. We found a well-sized room and a very comfortable bed. There is plenty of space for parking around the hotel which is located south of San Diego. The location in National City is probably not the best for San Diego visitors. You definitely should rent a car. It is about a 20min ride to San Diego downtown. There is a railroad line and a music place next to the hotel. If you like it quite you should ask for a quite room or consider another place to stay. We changed the room after the second night which was absolutely no problem. The complementary WiFi work pretty well. Overall we enjoyed our stay and considering the price we would return if the offer is right again.
Hotel was clean first class 4 star hotel. Room was extremely clean and bed was very comfortable. Staff was friendly and polite as our family arrived early to check in. We used the pool while our room was prepared and staff dropped off our room to me when it was ready.
Close to Las Americas shopping outlet only 10mins drive. Hotel located very close to hwy and in the industrial area. A bit far from Sandiego theme parks. Only 1 restaurant near the hotel. The rest you need to drive. Overall hotel room was quite big and spacious. They provide microwave and also bar fridge. Unfortunately they did not provide any plate or glass that you can put inside mwave. Everything was made from paper/plastic glass. They provide guest laundry, which open 24hrs. The think that I don't like was a bit over priced for the dryer machine. Sheraton only charged $1for 1 hour drying and also was a good machine as clothes dried in one cycle, here you need to pay $2 for dryer and here I had to paid 3x cycles to get those clothes dried. We were lucky on our 2nd nights the hotel upgraded our room to ensuite which slightly bigger and has a separate TV area and balcony.
This hotel was very clean, the staff was super friendly and efficient at check-in and check-out, the rooms were spacious and the beds were soooo comfortable. The lobby was gorgeous and there was even a coffee bar set up in the lobby with a Keurig and many coffee selections. I would stay here again and again!
We selected this hotel for cost savings purposes. It's near downtown, the zoo, and area beaches however, not in the thick of the bustling city or heavy tourist areas. I read reviews on Expedia where it received an "Excellent" rating and I believe that set me up to be underwhelmed after a pleasant check-in. The agent at the front desk happily accommodated our request for a room with a nice view. I had high expectations but after arriving to our room (standard 2 queens) I realized it was just a standard economy hotel. Pros: Decent rates for the area; convenience to the aforementioned attractions; immaculate lobby; nice staff; heated pool; efficient business center; free parking; and free high speed internet. Cons: Firm beds; strands of hair in the bathroom & tub from previous guests; train noise (horn blowing in the early hours); .
We stayed at the Best Western Plus Marina Gateway Hotel, from February 23 through February 28, 2016. The hotel is located in National City, several miles away from downtown San Diego CA. The hotel itself looks nice. The people at the front desk service are excellent, polite and willing to help at any time. We stayed in room 451. We had some issues in the hotel room and they were fixed right away. There is no breakfast offered by the hotel, but there is a restaurant on the site that offers breakfast, lunch and dinner with a 15% discount for the hotel guests. On the weekends, this restaurant has a live music band with very loud drums until 2 am. There is a heated outdoor pool and a small fitness room. There is no drinking water in the fitness room, that is somewhat inconvenient. Even so there is a fountain in the near restroom. If you want to drink you need to exit the fitness room and get back in using your room key or bring the water with you. There are small towels in the fitness room and pool. There is complementary coffee in the morning in the lobby. There is free parking with enough parking space, free WiFi in the room and a computer room with several computers and a printer. There is a small closet and a dresser with four big drawers in the guest room. The windows of our room were looking out on the parking lot and highway. At night there is a lot of noise from the highway, the nearby railroad train and the A/C. The hotel and room are clean. The bath towels in the bathroom are small and overused. They need to be retired. The same goes for the hands towels. Toiletries are poor. The bathroom is large enough and has a large mirror for shaving with enough lights. It would be nice if the shower had more pressure. Our general impression is good if you use AAA discount, otherwise it is more expensive than it deserves to be. The hotel is listed as three stars. I think it is overrated. It looks more like 2-2.5 at the most. I would recommend this hotel for everybody.

Hotel room was nice and clean which we liked. The staff was friendly and helpful. The swimming pool was ok but could be better if the water without some debris. This hotel is not closed to the main activities. Couple restaurants are closed by. Rental car is recommended since parking is free.
We got a Groupon rate here, and unlike some places, the staff here didn't take on an attitude as if we'd insulted them by using a Groupon. They have a free shuttle up to the 24th st trolley stop till around 10 p.m. or so. Just give them a few minutes' notice and they'll take you to the stop or pick you up from there. We didn't get to use the pool or fitness center, but they looked clean and in good repair.

This best western plus met my expectations by far.. The location was nice a little distance away from some attractions but in walking distance to several restaurants. The hotel was so clean and the room were nice and clean as well.. The front desk staff was very proficient with checking in and out and Manny the manager was awesome! Super friendly and great recommendations for dining! I will definitely have this Best Western on my list to stay when visiting San Diego again! Except the next time I will rent a car (parking is free!) instead of using uber and lyft!
We deliberately choose this hotel to get a much cheaper deal than staying downtown. We stayed for 3 nights and the stay has to be graded on 2 different experiences. The first 2 nights were absolutely find. Very pleasant and helpful staff. We chose a suite as staying for the 3 nights. Clean and comfortable and for 2 nights got a good nights sleep. No breakfast on site was disappointing but there were plenty of places around to eat including on Mile of Cars were there are a few busy Dennys etc. Unfortunately the 3rd night was completely different we had Spanish speaking neighbors both at the side and above who's normal speaking volume was SHOUT!! Which could be heard for a big part of the evening. I had requested a room away from the restaurant next door being aware of the music on weekends so were fortunately not bothered by that on the Friday.
took shower in hot water only never needed to add any cold got out of shower and used the hair dryer to warm up! not joking did not stay in the shower very long in the evening but in the morning I had to before I put clean close on how ever I did skip the shave I turned the cold to see if the handles or the lines was on backwards
Past downtown off the 5 freeway right off the off ramp you will find Marina Gateway hotel. Price was right for valentines weekend, was given two queen beds in a pretty nice Best Western room, comfortable and clean. We stayed just one night but we were pleasantly surprised and would return if we could not get a downtown hotel. The area hotel is in is not great but the hotel is nice.
This property was very comfortable and nicely run. We did have a problem with the customers next to us. They were apparently were having marital problems and were speaking late into the night (3-4am). We didn't call the front desk because we hated to cause a fuss but it was hard to sleep. We were a little disappointed that there was only a Keurig coffee pot for the entire hotel and was usually devoid of coffee to use. We had to leave to get a good cup of coffee.Other than that the staff was helpful and we were only a short drive from San Diego.
This hotel was great from beginning to end .the location was terrific the service was awesome and the restaurant which was 5 min walk was great.this hotel was well worth what you pay.the Rooms were very roomy and the hot tub was an added plus.
Zoe and Albert are just the best ever. They helped me find the best restaurants and things to do in town and were so friendly and courteous. Just amazing. The hotel is gorgeous, the rooms are nice and it was very close to a hotel and bar.
Fabulous location with easy on and off access to I-5. There is a nice restaurant next door that offers a discount to those staying at the hotel. In & Out Burger is just down the street, as well as, the ""Mile of Cars" area. My family had just arrived from living overseas and we had quite a bit of luggage. We stayed in a Double Queen Bed Suite that included a sitting area with a pull out sofa bed and a balcony. All of the employee were polite and the entire staff went above and beyond to accommodate my family with some extenuating circumstances
All of the San Diego hotels were very expensive, so we chose to stay a little out of the way. It was great! The place is nice and our room had a large patio with pool chairs. The desk let us check in early and brought us a crib for the baby. We used the pool and had a great time. You will need a car, but there is free parking. This is where we will stay next time in San Diego.
This is a very nice place to stay, not your average Best Western it's above, hotel staff very friendly, professional, and helpful for anything you may need. The rooms are very clean and everything well maintained
San Diego is a great place- to visit, for a short time. Everything's soooo overpriced, so this Best Western was a surprise. It's new and still shiney, so take that into consideration. The location isn't all that convenient as it's in National City, away from downtown S.D. But if your destination is around the port terminals or the Navy Yard it's great. We were in town for business at one of the marinas downtown so it was a bit of a drive, but for the value that was no issue. Downtown is only about 10 minutes away max on the freeway anyway. The facility is fairly new- our room was a "standard" with two queens and an a harbor view- sort of. We could see some BGS's- Big Grey Ships- from our 4th floor room in the nearby Navy yard, as well as a couple of freighters- being ex-Navy I love ships of any type and size, so this was a bonus. And the harbor side is very quiet. The AC/heat pump is quieter than usual, the room even with two beds is spacious, the bath is large enough to have my lady friend's rather large toiletries travel bag on the floor without causing trip'n fall events. The shower head actually sprays more than enough water to get that excessive amount of conditioner out of your hair. My only criticism of the room is that when coming out of the bathroom at 0-dark-30 with the room's lights out, the mirrored closet doors immediately to the right reflected my shadow in the very dim light- I nearly freaked out, thinking that the boogy-man was for sure going to jump me. As to the customer service at the front counter- both coming and going, the personnel behind the counter are very professional, very clean-cut and pleasant, very prompt in acknowledging your presence. Their attentiveness is first-rate.
This is a vacationers' worst nightmare, paying 5 days for 2 days stay, and hotel would deny responsibility, defraud the visitor and will not even refund. This is worst than being mugged. I booked a trip using Expedia, originally I have planned to stay 5 days, but decide to change it on the day I checked in. Hotel management said there is no cancelation fee, but they can't change it unless Expedia call them. I called Expedia right away to request the change, but Expedia did not make the changes. When I call back few days later, Expedia said they will not refund because hotel management said I stayed for full 5 days. I called hotel and they did some research and they indeed have a record that I checked out 3 days early, but the manager said since Expedia didn't call them, they are charging Expedia for 5 days, and I have to ask refund from Expedia. I called Expedia back, they denied I call them to make changes, and since hotel will not give money back to them, they will not refund. So both Expedia and the Hotel are pushing the responsibility, neither of them will give in, and I, the vacationer, is the one getting hurt at the end. I messaged Best Western corporate office and they just said its their hotel policy, and I have to go after Expedia. So the bottomline, never use Expedia, and don't stay in Best Western.
We stayed here three nights (25-28) over Christmas. PROS:The hotel was conveniently located right off of I-5, which was nice. The hotel was clean, parking was free, and the staff was friendly. The lobby and grounds were nice. There is also a decent restaurant next door. CONS: The walls and ceilings might as well have been a shower curtain. You could hear EVERY intimate utterance (in the most literal sense possible) of the neighbors, and sounded like there was a herd of buffalo in the room above us. I did not feel our neighbors were being loud, the walls were just that thin. The bed was harder than a rock, and the refrigerator could not keep anything cold rendering it useless. The TV had this weird blue streak down the right side, which was just annoying. There was no continental breakfast, which I knew prior to booking. I would not stay here again.

Dear R-JT2005, We sincerely apologize for your experience at our property and we appreciate you providing us with feedback. We take great pride in being one of the top hotels in the San Diego area, and we want to apologize that your recent stay did not reflect this. As you can see from our previous reviews, an average stay is not what our hotel aims for and guest satisfaction is our most important goal. Thank you for the time you spent responding and we will continue to strive to do a better job of taking care of our guest's concerns. Sincerely, Jeff Moser Best Western Plus Marina Gateway Hotel
Ok stayed 4 nights nights @Best Western Plus from Dec 23-26th during the Christmas holidays. We really like it because... PROs: - Reasonable cost for what U get; got AAA rate (I think Gov rate n AAA rate we're the same) - Fairly new hotel n very clean throughout - FREE ample parking - Awesome excellent n great customer service; easy checkin - FREE Wifi (or included in rate) - TV has lots of channels; a big plus since we don't have cable @home - NO resort fees - Bed was very comfortable n slept like a baby - Enjoyed the keurig with FREE coffee in the lobby in the mornings - Water pressure pretty good n room n bathroom somewhat new n very clean throughout - heater worked very well - Small refrigerator good - Small microwave good - Business center: was able to meet a deadline for work using computer - Fitness center: My daughter used it but I didn't - Laundry room: cost $2/wash n $2/dry each load; $4/total each load - The food @Goodies restaurant next door is really good n but a lil costly/pricy. My daughter had a grilled fish sandwich with fresh fruit n she loved it; only cost $10.50 plus tax. - Centrally located n close to I5 freeway n noise from trains didn't bother us - They have several luggage racks but didn't use them - Used the elevators a lot CONs: - Walls n ceilings kind of thin; n we could hear our neighbors so got top floor - NO breakfast but Starbucks down the street. We went to Walmart the night before n got yogurt n fruit for breakfast so that's resolved it Overall YES we would definitely stay here again for either business or leisure/personal reasons because U get A LOT for your money; again the only minor downside is there is NO breakfast in the mornings but we'd rather save $50-100/night n get our own breakfast tho.
THE HOTEL IS 100% better than the Best Western South Bay Inn that hotel is a dump and the rooms smell of urine, homeless people hanging around, poor custermer services, the manager is rude, the rooms looks nothing like photos on web site.
We had a pleasant stay at this BW- just off of I5 and easy to find in National City. Not a whole lot of restaurants to find, with the exception of the local Goodies that has a live band playing until 2300hrs - it's loud if you have a room that faces them, as we did. The staff did warn us, and we didn't minded they ended in time. We took off to the Gaslamp District - a quick hop onto the interstate- to get a meal and bit of night life. King bed was ok- but they have the smallest pillows (6) on the bed- we jokingly said they stole them from kids. Our A/C sounded like a jet taking off from the USS Midway when we turned it on - so we just used it on fan mode. The water seemed to take forever to get hot. The room was spacious and clean, and I'll echo the same complaint that the walls and floors seem thin as you could hear other guests easily. The fan helped a lot to cover it up. Free wifi and parking were good. No breakfast at the hotel available- only at Goodies next door with 15% voucher off. Staff offered multiple vouchers if we wanted to dine at dinner and breakfast, which was nice.
the staff was very helpful, I stayed there for almost 4 months and met almost all staff, special thanks to the owner Edgar which was very friendly and I found this as a very good detail, that take very good care of hosts, and also front desk Albert. Will definitely stary there again. Affordable price and excellent rooms and installations.
Extremely friendly staff, very attentive, beautiful lobby and entrance, very inviting, clean hotel and rooms, comfortable bed, nice area, 24 hour fitness, close to good food and shopping, only 1o minutes from downtown San Diego
The hotel is very big and it offers a 50% discount for the breakfast in the nearest cafe. The standard room is big, beds are comfortable, good for its price. Unfortunately it is located far away from the most touristic places and far from Coronado bridge. However if you are traveling by car, it should not be a problem.
It is a rather new hotel, away from the main city but easily drivable to everywhere. The only problem is that they don't do breakfast, they don't say they don't so you kinda think all best western does. They hide the fact about having no breakfast by not mentioning anything about it. It's ok if they don't serve breakfast but at least say it proudly that you don't serve breakfast. That way we can look at other option. I think that they could at least have coffee or tea in the lobby as an amenity, so many other properties do that and being in the hotel industry for over 20++ years the cost is not that much. Come on BW PLUS Marina Gateway don't be so cheap.

December 15, 2015 Dear asiatravler29, We appreciate the feedback you provided for our hotel. We are extremely sorry for the inconveniences you experienced during your recent stay with us. Our hotel does not serve a free continental breakfast. We do however, have a full service restaurant on property, Goodies Bar and Grill. They are open for breakfast, lunch and dinner and they provide room service for our hotel guests. They also offer a discount to all hotel guests who dine in their restaurant. We offer different room rates at our hotel, some rates include breakfast and some rates do not include breakfast. We also offer complimentary coffee in our lobby every morning. We are very sorry for the unfortunate miscommunication regarding our breakfast and complimentary coffee. We appreciate your feedback and we hope that you will consider staying at our hotel again. Your satisfaction is important to us and we will be using the feedback you gave us to implement improvements and to ensure we offer a better experience for our guests in the future. Sincerely, Best Western Plus Marina Gateway Hotel
The hotel is located down the street from 32nd street Navel Station. The hotel ambience is very nice they had all the holiday decorations symbolizing the season. The room with the king size bed was very spacious, clean and all the amenities you need however, the towels were hard the bed and bedding is less to be desired. The mattress was hard as a rock and the comforter and sheets were in need of an upgrade. If your looking for a good night sleep I would not recommend this hotel.
My family and I stayed for two nights at this hotel and really enjoyed it. The staff were friendly and helpful. We had a great time in San Diego and La Jolla and found the location of the hotel good and the free car parking helped as we were able to easily drive everywhere. We enjoyed using the pool, spa and gym. I even used the laundry while I was there to get some washing done while we were spending time in the close by pool area.
We stayed at this best western for 2 nights as part of a getaway before having our baby. We were out and about San Diego so we really just needed a nice place to stay. Upon check-in we were very impressed with the staff as well as the appearance of the hotel. The disappointment came when we went to bed. Our mattress was very uncomfortable. I often travel for work and I can say this was the most uncomfortable hotel bed I ever slept on. Additionally the walls are very thin and our neighbors kept us up all night. The people in the next door room were not shouting but just speaking in a normal voice and watching TV. This was enough noise to keep us up all night.
Two days later I decided to give Best Western another try in the San Diego area. It matched my price point, and location to Downtown was close enough. It's a nice hotel, for being in an industrial district next to I-5. No breakfast. Laundry looked as if the JV wresting team had been in it, also out of soap. Part 2 of the Worst Western experience. I joined the rewards program when I bought a Harley Davidson and became a HOG member. It's kinda like AAA benefits but supposedly some extra benefits to riders. I decided to retire for a year after getting laid off. To travel, finish my Master's Degree, and just live life in case I don't make it to 70 yrs old. so I'm spending a lot of money at hotels, essentially mortgaging my future. Which is cool, until you feel swindled. Without going into detail, it was an aggravating stay. The staff were collegial and well-dressed, but once again ignorant of any BW Status, and more loyal to the local owner than the brand or it's repeat customers. Denied an upgrade and then had the nerve to try and sell me that room of twice the advertised price. Is this a used car lot? So then I was back on the phone with BW Rewards Club...for the 4th time and still not resolution. I felt more like a customer than a guest, and I've been traveling a lot so that's important. If I have to haggle for a loyalty benefit, that's not a benefit. Allegiance to a certain brand is supposed to make things easier, but honestly I couldn't wait to leave this hotel. I will say they were cool about Harley Parking, and there's a place called Goodies next door that has a great happy hour and good service. I had planned to stay two nights, but was so disgruntled with the chain, and the specific property, that I checked out a day early. I'm not sure why I even attempted another Best Western property later that same day...Worst Western 3 of 3 in El Centro, CA

December 9, 2015 Dear Joe H, We appreciate your input on our property for it allows us to pin point where we can improve. We appreciate you being a Best Western Rewards member and for continuing to stay at the Best Western chain of hotels. Our hotel is very sorry to hear that you have been experiencing difficulties with the Best Western Rewards Program. Upon learning of your dissatisfaction with your reservation, I was more than happy to give you a complimentary upgrade to suite. We apologize for the inconvenience with our guest laundry facilities and we can assure you it is cleaned daily. We will be sure to follow up with our entire staff and we will use your feedback as a training tool. Thank you for the time you spent responding and we will continue to strive to do a better job of taking care of our guest's concerns. Sincerely, Jeff Moser Best Western Plus Marina Gateway Hotel
Always spotless & people are very professional. Right off the freeway and there is a restaurant next to hotel that in open early and closes late - food is excellent as is the service. overall - always a great stay.
We checked into this hotel with a family with young children. We booked here as we though it would be quieter than staying right in the city. When we arrived at 1550 our rooms weren't ready. We were told we could have rooms on the top floor but they would be facing the restaurant across the car park which played live music on a Saturday night. We put our children to bed at 1920 ready for a day at San Diego zoo something we have travelled from Australia to visit. The music started at 1932 on the Friday night it was so loud we couldn't hear our tv. I went downstairs to say that tomorrow night our room would need to be changed and was told I needed to let them know at 1200 tomorrow. When you can sing along to the songs over tv on volume 24 it is too loud and ridiculous. We previously stayed in a hotel next to the freeway and the traffic noise was not as loud as this very disappointing. Especially since we had booked this four months ago and it was clear on the booking we had 2 young children.

November 24, 2015 Dear Nadine M, We sincerely apologize for your experience at our property and we appreciate you providing us with feedback. We take great pride in being one of the top hotels in the San Diego area, and I want to personally apologize that your recent stay did not reflect this. Upon check-in, our front desk staff did our best to inform your group which of your three rooms would hear the live music from the restaurant. Our staff did our best to provide your group with three rooms that were close to each other and as quiet as possible. Upon hearing of your complaint regarding the live music, I personally asked the restaurant to lower the volume of their music. Sincerely, Jeff Moser Best Western Plus Marina Gateway Hotel
Nice hotel located off the 5 freeway. Location is a quick drive from downtown San Diego and Coronado Island. We spent one night there on a leisure trip. Room was very clean and quiet in spite of being located close to a busy highway. There is a heated pool outside. Well worth the price.
I always stay here. The staff is very attentive and accommodating. The hotel is clean, well maintained and rooms are spacious with frig and microwave. Very safe parking and next door is a very good restaurant serving breakfast through dinner and late night.
We stayed here three nights. It was right off the highway and convenient for getting around San Diego. The area is 10-15 minutes drive from the major sites - gaslamp, Coronado, etc, so you do need a car. There are a few restaurants across the street, but otherwise not too much to see in the immediate vicinity. It seems like a safe area. The hotel is modern, clean and well priced. We'd stay here again.
We stayed here for the nights, lovely hotel and found it quite central location for everything we wanted to do. We arrived here at 9pm in the evening, check in was simple and or room was clean with a car park view. We collected our car from a Alamo rental depo and this was 5 minutes drive from there. There is a restaurant called Goodies where you can get breakfast and eat in the evening, it is located just across the hotel. We didn't really eat there apart from one evening as we felt it was really expensive plus not that great quality. As we had a car wee could go where we want and would often just do that. Parking is free and there is ample places to park.
Stayed one night at this clean, comfortable and modern hotel. Staff friendly (albeit a little stiff) and helpful... especially if your Spanish is good. Room very tidy with all amenities expected of a medium-range establishment, but why, oh why, do they provide powdered milk and not the stuff from a REAL cow?? Only downside was excessive noise outside our room (boisterous staff??).Big plus was the adjacent restaurant for an excellent (and cheap) breakfast. Location a little out-of-town and industrialised, but suited us perfectly. Recommended.
We stayed here for about a week visiting our grandson who is stationed at the Navy base in San Diego. Room was excellent, very close to Navy base and had free parking and room service available. I liked how handy it was to everything, just off hwy 5. Very easy to get around town from, nice pool.We liked the refrigerator and microwave in the room!
I stayed here for 7 nights while visiting San Diego. The hotel is certainly very nice, clean and comfortable. There is a nice pool area, although I did not use it during my stay as it was still a little cool. There is a hotel / pub on the same block which shares the car park with this hotel. They have a happy hour a couple of nights a week and it is live music and night club like, but it finishes up by about 10pm and there didn't seem to be any sort of ongoing trouble from it. The onsite car parking is extensive and free, which is perfect for those travelling with a car. There is not a lot nearby and in hindsight I was a little further from Downtown San Diego than I would have liked. Having been there several times before and having a rental car, I was not aiming for Downtown accommodation, rather something a little cheaper. But this was further than I expected. With regards to amenities nearby, there is a couple of fast food chains such as In N Out Burger which is just the other side of the I5 from the hotel - less than 5 minutes walk. Also there is Walmart, Best Buy and other similar stores a short drive heading South from the hotel. The premium outlets are about a 20 minute drive on the I5 South as well. I takes about 10 mins to get to San Diego by car on the I5. Other than that it is quite industrial around the area and is primarily navy and shipping by the looks. The initial room I had was on the ground floor just near the lifts. I'm not sure why, but it was a king handicap room. I had booked a king room, but not handicap. But it was on the larger side, so I was happy to stay in it if it was not required by anyone else. I stayed one night in this room and was nearly driven mad by the lifts. The constant dinging of the lift not only when it arrived, but with every person entering and exiting it, was frustratingly annoying. I am usually a reasonably heavy sleeper and very little keeps me awake, but this was ridiculous. In addition the people on the floor above me, were like a pack of elephants. I currently live in an older ground floor unit and I do hear my upstairs neighbours, but this was nothing like what I was subjected to in this room. I promptly arrived at the front desk around 6am the next morning and requested that I be moved to the top floor and nowhere near the lift as there was no way I could stand the no sleep for the following 6 nights. The person on duty at first said that they had no rooms that were the same as mine. I said I did not care what type of room it was, so long as it was away from the lift and preferably on the top floor. They asked me to come back around 9 and they would see what they had. I did so and they were able to provide me their last room which was a twin room instead. However it was on the third floor (of 4) and I was assured it was well away from the lift. I transferred all my luggage to the new room, but it was only one further away from the lift than what my previous one was. At this point I could not be bothered trying to change again, so thought I would see what it was like for a night. The lift was still audible, but to a much lesser degree and with much less activity than the ground floor. The upstairs neighbours were much better and I was able to sleep so I stuck with that room for the rest of the 6 nights. Overall this experience was highly annoying and ongoing the hotel could resolve it by simply turning off the audible noise on the lift or changing the programming so it only does it on arrival, or by at least turning the volume down. Tip for guests... get as far away from the lift as possible if you are on the ground floor! The front desk staff were accommodating with the situation and were nothing but professional about it. The rooms were comfortable, clean and a good size room and bathroom. Overall the place is certainly a nice place to stay, is good value and is ideal if you don't mind how far you are from Downtown San Diego and you have a car to get around.
I thought I was booking a real suite but what I got was a room with a sitting area It did not live up to my expectations and was disappointed that I did not get the breakfast that I normally get at a Best Western- not even a roll, or danish FAIL!!!
The hotel is quite far away from everything so a car is absolutely necessary. Parking is free. The room and the bathroom were of adequate size and showed no excessive wear and tear. A free copy of USA Today was provided and in-room wi-fi was free. There was a bit of nightly noise from Marina Way, though. Also noise from the nearby restaurant "Goodies" might be an evening issue for light and early sleepers.
Large rooms, friendly staff, just out by itself. There is an In and Out burger place down the street and a Denny's as well as a restaurant/bar next door. It has a live band but they stop playing at 7:30 in the evening.
Location is priceless, very close to the zoo, downtown and almost everything, gas station nearby, dennys, starbucks ... This is definitely the place to stay when visiting San Diego. Staff was very cool and helpful as well when we ask for things to see around.
Clean and comfortable hotel, bed was comfy. Friendly staff. Nice pool area and hot tub, small gym too. A bit out of the way and near the industrial area, which ment a car was a must or lots of taxis. I didnt like the bath/shower combination and the shower curtain!!!
Really clean hotel. Not one disappointment! My new hotel for when I'm come to San Diego! Customer service was on point, only thing was the loud music at the bar that's right across but they did let us know before our stay which we did not have a problem. VERY happy with out stay and Highly recommend! :)
Not being familiar with the San Diego area we chose National City knowing that having a car would would make our travelling in the San Diego area easier. We were pleasantly surprised when we entered our hotel. Lovely, welcoming lobby and staff very attentive. Room was first class. Although in more of an industrial area we had easy access to whichever we wanted to go and the shuttle bus took us to the trolley station which was a wonderful way to get around and see the sights. Hop on, hop of idea. Just great. After this experience we stayed at a Best Western by Mission Bay, San Diego, what a disappointed after staying at the Best Western PLUS Marina Gateway Hotel. we would definitely stay here again.
