"Two stays, two different experience"

3
12/07/2018

I stayed here twice, a one night stay in May as I was taking part in Bristol to Paris Cycle challenge and I really liked it. The room was well-designed and modern, a bit warm but still comfortable. Breakfast was plentiful, with a broad variety of cold and hot choices. Having this experience, I stayed here for two nights in June for another cycling challenge. My room this time was rather old-fashioned in design especially the bathroom suite needed an upgrade. Both times my room was clean and staff were friendly.

"An awful lunch experience."

09/07/2018

So myself and my grandfather meet up every week for my lunch break. We have for around the past year gone to the Red Lion for lunch and most of the time it has been lovely. However sometimes the service has been slow and items have not been ordered, but this hasn't ever deterred us from returning until our last visit. The waitress was absolutely lovely and she is a credit to the establishment. We ordered our food, I ordered a salad and he ordered a sandwich. I have an hour for my lunch break and got there within 10 mins of my lunch break started. There were two ladies sitting opposite that ordered there food just before we did. Their food came out and one of the ladies wasn't happy saying it wasn't what they ordered, saying she ordered the salad. I believe what happened was my salad was ready to go however they didn't want to upset the ladies so used my food to serve to them. This means I was left with nothing and we waited over 50 minutes with constant promises of it being ‘just a minute away' we eventually cancelled the order and I want back to work on a empty stomach. What let it down even further is the fact that when we went to sort the bill for our drinks we got a very limp apology as the two were more concerned with how to sort out the till. Plus the fact that any company that is interested in keeping customers loyal shouldn't have charged us for the drinks... but they did. Safe to say, we are never going there again.

"Wonderful historic building in the centre of Salisbury"

The courtyard is absolutely beautiful and a lovely place to relax and have a cool drink on a hot summer day. Our room was extremely comfortable with a larger than average double bed and lovely sofa. A cafetière was provided for fresf coffee and a teapot for the tea. Little touches that make a big difference. .

"Perfect Location with Minor Cautions"

08/07/2018

We stayed at the Red Lion Inn in Salisbury. It's a very short walk to the Cathedral and the downtown market square. The staff is excellent and caring although they are not all equally knowledgeable when it comes to questions about driving directions. The Inn has a lovely central courtyard perfect for enjoying an afternoon drink and conversation. Our breakfast at the Red Lion was very good, although afternoon coffee/tea was disappointing. If you are driving there, the additional charge for a parking space is essential -- but arrange early as they have a limited number of spaces available, and if you have a large vehicle it's pretty difficult to park in the spaces (we have now mastered the 11-point turn). The building is quite old (parts date from around the 1500s) so don't expect air conditioning -- although our room did have a fan, and if there isn't a heat wave you won't have any problems in that regard. The only cautionary note we'd offer is that there are a couple of pubs nearby, so it's possible that if your window faces the street you could be awakened at 2:00 am by rowdy drunks -- we were, on both of the nights we stayed there -- but in fairness, the World Cup was in progress so those nights might be the exception.

"Full of Character"

02/07/2018

This is a nice hotel with a wealth of character, and very pleasant staff. Our room was comfortable and had everything that you could wish for, except air conditioning. But, this is a very old hotel with a great history so I doubt if they considered such things in the 13th century. That said a fan was available in the wardrobe, which was a great help in our heatwave. The courtyard is a great place to sit and watch the world go by and people watch on your fellow guests. Parking isn't very limited, but again not really a consideration when they built this place al those years ago. Location is brilliant with a short walk into town and to the Cathedral. Service is first class, especially when you forget to take some items I had hanging in the wardrobe. They've posted them onto to me, and that is a lovely touch. The only reason for one missing star is lack of parking and also in warm weather we had to have our window open, which unfortunately was next to the kitchen extractor fans so cooking smells in the bathroom.

"Where do I start!!"

27/06/2018

Very poor from start to finish. Shown to our room & blind was collapsed on the windowledge. Dinner that night was a disaster. Only a dozen covers in the restaurant, starters took a while but were ok. We both chose steak for our main, but it was extremely tough. So much so that my wife couldn't eat it & my jaw felt as if it had been to the gym!! I had a glass of red wine which was full of sediment. The big issue though was the waiter - he was sullen & uncommunicative & couldn't have cared less! Dinner the following night was ok & the young man waiting on was pleasant & attentive but again there were only 4 tables occupied & our starters took nearly 40 minutes to arrive. Unacceptable! Breakfast on both days was buffet-style & ok if not altogether exciting. Again though the waiting staff were surly & uninterested. They all need peronality transplants. Overall not a very inspiring stay. Even if we were paying budget prices the quality of food & service was very poor but we were paying in excess of £400 DB&B for a 2 night stay & it was unacceptable & not worth the money. We will not be returning & will advise family & friends to avoid at all costs

"Fathers Day meal"

17/06/2018

We decided to celebrate with a meal.We were the only people eating and we ordered 2 steaks and 2 burgers.Upon delivery of food one burger can only be described as very undercooked and so this was taken away. with an apology .The remaing food was ok although the chips were cold but having already complained once we just made do.After along wait, the recooked meal arrived, but by this time the rest of the party had finished. The replacement burger was cooked this time but the accompanying chips were inedible as burnt. It would have been nice to have received a proper apology at the end and maybe a courtesy coffee as the whole experience was a disaster.Needless to say we cannot recommend eating at this establishment where there is so little regard paid to their custommers.

"What a lovely hotel in quite a nice location"

11/06/2018

We booked a night here as we were attending a wedding reception at the hotel. We nipped into the hotel in the morning when we arrived to check some details. Reception were charming & very helpful. We were able to transfer our car to the hotel car park, extremely 'tight' but just what we wanted. Later in the day, after the wedding in a local village, the bus transferring the guests broke down. Not a catastrophe, but we weren't going to meet the reception meal times. Luckily the hotel were informed and they delayed everything - the courtyard was just the place for the early guests to meet and chat, whilst we were relayed to the hotel. The meal was absolutely wonderful, which was a marvel after the hiccup. The staff again were just super. If there was one picky issue it would be, why did the hotel only have one bar man on duty most of the evening; there was always a queue waiting to purchase drinks. The room we had was lovely: and my wife had such a lovely time she has suggested we book a few days stay later to explore Salisbury further.

"Beautiful Hotel in the heart of Salisbury"

11/06/2018

This hotel caught our eye the first time we visited Salisbury as it has an enchanting courtyard covered in vines that invites you in to take a better look. Since our discovery we've stayed here on every visit to Salisbury as we just love it. The building itself is gorgeously old with wonderful pieces of antique furniture and even bits of the old walls exposed so you can see the original shell of the building. The staff have always been super friendly and helpful and the rooms are spacious and very comfortable. it's right in the centre with parking and perfect for exploring the city. Definitely recommend it to anyone!

William W, General Manager at Best Western Red Lion Hotel, responded to this review
Dear LizzieMcManus, I appreciate your review of our hotel and I am glad you had the chance to find some of our historical pieces within the walls. I hope you had the chance to find the historic workman's caricature of Alice in Wonderland's "Mad Hatter" which is a personal favourite in the hotel. I do hope we will see you again soon. Sincerely,

"Ok."

Not a bad hotel, old building so suffers from creaky floors and the like. The room I was allocated was comfortable enough if a bit dated. Major complaint though is my window was over the courtyard where smokers gather, consequently the smell of cigarettes and noise of chatting was a big disappointment. Breakfast ok, parking on site very limited but there is a council car park very nearby which is free overnight.

William W, General Manager at Best Western Red Lion Hotel, responded to this review
Dear Barnkent, Thank you for taking the time to write about your recent stay. I am sorry we did not fully exceed your expectations during visit. The staff were very friendly and helpful - nothing was too difficult for them. Good comfortable rooms with modern bathrooms. Easy off street parking behind the hotel in a public carpark. Excellent buffet breakfast with plenty of variety. Leafy courtyard with old world charm. Dinner was excellent.

"Very old Hotel"

27/05/2018

We wanted a room with two beds and got a cozy one. We accepted that the window was giving to the road - a source of occasional noise until late at night from the inevitable puberal motorists who need to impress the world with massive rumpus from their tuned vehicles. Further, we were lucky to have a pleasant guest in the neighbouring room.We could not hear him much but felt his heavy steps. The age of the building certainly cannot be hidden - thin walls were standard and transmission of vibrations not considered a problem at the time of construction. We slept fairly well anyway. Breakfast was not included in the room and for £ 10.-- each we got a simple, definitely not exuberant breakfast. As far as parking is concerned, as we stayed only one night we were not offered one of the few parking spaces and had to leave our car on a nearby public parking space. The location of the Hotel is its greatest asset and yes, the staff behaved correctly, the male ones were even friendly.

"Lovely Afternoon Tea"

21/05/2018

Had a lovely afternoon tea in the courtyard of this beautiful quaint hotel. The tea was delicious, with traditional scones and clotted cream, cucumber, egg and salmon sandwiches and cakes. Would definitely return and stay of back in Salisbury.

Stayed here for one night at the end of our trip. Lovely old hotel with good sized rooms. We ate off the bar menu and the food was good. My only issue was the room was a bit stuffy with minimal airflow and no AC.

"A gem in the middle of the city"

5
10/05/2018

From the exterior the Red Lion is understated, but once you walk through the cobblestoned archway into the courtyard you are transported into a different world. Its picturesque and welcoming. Sat in the courtyard having a few drinks, and you could literally be anywhere. the staff are friendly and helpful, we arrived early so left our bags in the foyer, and they were placed in our room when we returned, an unexpected, nice touch, but the things that make a good stay, even better. The room was huge, and very modern despite the hotel having a 12th century exterior, it was exceptionally clean, spacious and comfortable. The location is also superb, walkout turn left and then right and you are in the City square, and abundance of shops, cafe's and pubs. There is limited parking, however, there is a big multi-storey car park about 150yds down the street. Brilliant hotel and highly recommended. We have already booked our next stay!

"Ok to stay here"

3
04/05/2018

This hotel is in the centre and does therefore suffer with noise at night. There was a disco until 3am somewhere close to our room. There is also road noise. Having said that the rooms are above average in size and well appointed. Bar and lounge area are good with a lovely courtyard. Food is ok.

"Modern Olde Worlde"

04/05/2018

A family birthday necessitated an overnight in Salibury, and the Red Lion looked the best option. Through no fault of the hotel, its situated on a one way system which means the sat nav has a bit of trouble finding it, so we ended up parking in the local Pay and Display and walking to check in. Check in is a bit old fashioned - a small desk, lots of wood panelling and the most hideous old clock I've seen for a long while, but it was efficient and the staff were helpful. Having already paid for overnight parking reception drew us a map to get our car to the car park entrance. The car park is very small, and the spaces are extremly tight. If you are an anxious parker and/or dont have parking sensors I'd suggest you park eslewhere. Despite the hotel boasting that its Europe's oldest purpose built hotel, and the approach to reception is through a rather nice old fashioned courtyard, our room was in a modern annex. Inside there were a few nods to historic architecture (wooden beams etc) but it lacked any real charachter, and the furninshings were distinctly modern. The rooms were perfectly clean and adequate. The bathroom was large there was a supporting column in an odd place which made it feel a bit cramped. Otherwise it was a but a bit basic and could do with a re-grout. Although the room was located on the main road noise wasn't too bad, the bed was comfortable enough and although it was warm day it wasn't excessively hot. Tea and coffee making facilities were good, and there's bottled water which is always a bonus. I didn't eat breakfast - although the restaurant looks like it is going down the fine dining route so I expect it would be good quallity, charging over a £10 for breakfast is taking the mick, and theres plenty of choice nearby. All in all a nice enough hotel, but nothing outstanding.

"Really rather pleasant"

4
01/05/2018

We enjoyed a rather special group reunion which the hotel team coped with admirably. Dinner was an interesting mix of classics like belly pork and novel such as bonefish cheek scampi. All very acceptable. Lovely, clean and well appointed rooms, and breakfast was good enough to cure 'the morning after the night record's. Ideally situated for central attractions.

"Excellent food, friendly staff"

5
30/04/2018

Stayed here for the first time. Great, central location for cathedral, local shopping facilities et al, superb food in the restaurant and the staff were very helpful, attentive and friendly. Very interesting and historic old hotel.

"Much nicer than the normal corporate hotels"

4
29/04/2018

From the moment you walk in to the courtyard you know you're in for something different. This hotel has masses of genuine olde worlde charm. There are lots of real old timbers on show throughout the hotel, including in my room and uneven floors. My room (21) was large, comfortable and quiet and the breakfast was very good. There is limited parking but the safe multi storey is free after 3.00 and all day on Sunday. My only real criticism is with the bar staff who were surly and more interested in chatting amongst themselves rather than serving customers. They didn't even have a pen between three of them to sign the bill!

"The Seamstress Suite, What a luxury!"

5
29/04/2018

We booked the Seamstress suite at the red lion as it was in a great location in the centre of Salisbury, although we didn't get a parking space we found Culver street car park nearby which was free from 3pm and all of Sunday which was really helpful. The courtyard is very pretty and upon entering the hotel you can tell that this is an old building, through the maze-like corridors to get to the rooms. We were greeted by pleasant staff who helped us check in, along with another member of staff who kindly showed us to the suite. After getting through the corridors, we were greeted by plush stairs leading up to the Seamstress suite, upon opening the door we were astounded, this is luxury! Extremely clean and ready for our stay! A beautiful bathtub in the centre of the room along with lovely surroundings as well as a beautiful en-suite. We couldn't believe our luck in finding this gem! Our suite looked out over the courtyard, which was great for people watching the wedding party that were at the hotel at the time! The bed was very comfortable and we both slept very well. No noise problems considering it's location and the party as we were well tucked away. After our stay we really didn't want to leave! But the £160 we paid for the stay was well worth the money and we will definitely be looking to return in the future (to the same suite we might add) Thank you for making our 1st year together celebration so special. We thoroughly enjoyed your suite and could not fault it in any way! Service with a smile as all staff were very friendly.

"One night stay."

15/04/2018

This was a birthday present from my wife. We had no worries about the recent nerve agent attack. (Trust the press to blow the whole thing out of proportion!!) The hotel was brilliant. Staff helpful, we had booked a car parking slot at the hotel, we arrived early and could not find any space in the the city carparks, parking was free for the time being as a result of the attack. The receptionist very kindly let us in to the hotel park three hours early. The room was very comfortable and extremely clean. Our night was slightly disturbed by machinery outside our window. Food was superb. Rarely have I had lamb so beautifully cooked and presented. Our waiter was very cheerfull and attentive. Breakfast? Suffice to say it was the only meal of the day. We would certainly recommend The Red Lion to our friends.

11/04/2018

We have just spent two nights with friends in Salisbury and booked this hotel. Room 19 is very olde world and comfy. We had a Travelzoo deal and had a three course meal on night one ... lovely food indeed and good service. Breakfast very good - self service, but happy to take an order for something a tad different if required. Will definitely return, as lovely hotel and welcoming city too. Do visit the Cathedral and the surrounding area, it is stunning. We also did Stonehenge on this trip

William W, General Manager at Best Western Red Lion Hotel, responded to this review
Dear Ruth H, Thank you for taking the time to place your kind review of our hotel. I am glad you enjoyed room 19 and do hope you will have the opportunity to come back and explore some of our other feature rooms and hidden gems both our hotel and the area has to offer. Sincerely, William Weis

"Good location for exploring Salisbury"

11/04/2018

Stayed there 9th April using the Travelzoo voucher , excellent value for Bed, Breakfast, Evening meal and glass of Prosecco. Nice old hotel large comfee bed with old worldy charm. Very friendly and attentive staff. The meal in the restaurant was excellent, although disappointed that they had run out of the fish starter. Well presented and good quality food and not rushed which is what we like.Breakfast was again good quality and lots of choice. Parking was the only tricky bit but parked at the Culver St car park just a 5 mins walk away which was free due to the current situation in Salisbury. Would have given a 5 rating but some areas of the hotel could do with a little updating.

"Best place in Salisbury for morning or afternoon coffee"

5
09/04/2018

Local to Salisbury so know most of the options that are available. The lounge where coffee is served is very comfortable and it is a great place to relax. The ambience is lovely. I am a frequent visitor for coffee for the reasons mentioned earlier but importantly it also tastes very good. Also the food menu has a wide range of choice. It is the team however that really make the difference and are effectively lead by Goldie. Special mention for Claudiu who with his pleasant manner provides excellent customer service and Alex for his friendly approach. Would definitely recommend and like me you will probably become a regular customer when in Salisbury.

"Historic Hostelrie"

02/04/2018

My wife and me stayed at the Red Lion in early March, booking ahead of the current cause of media interest. This Hotel was built to house the Architects of Salisbury Cathedral, so it's history goes back a bit. indicative of the 1220 Bar. We'd never seen inside the Cathedral which prompted our trip. Spent a lot of time researching the numerous hotels available, the choice in the Red Lion was time well spent. Took advantage of secure parking within the Hotel, probably unnecessary, but handy. The accommodation, a twin bed room at the front of the Hotel was comfortable, clean and warm. We had a B & B deal, lovely buffet breakfast bar, so much choice. We had dinner for three nights in the Restaurant, the service and food quality was superb. I can thoroughly recommend the Red Lion as a base for visiting he area

"Lovely Centrally Located Hotel"

4
02/04/2018

We've just returned from spending a short break at this 13th Century Inn in the heart of Salisbury. Great location, and for a very reasonable price. We stayed in one of the superior double rooms, and the room was a good size, comfortable bed, clean and quiet. As has been mentioned it can be hard to find your way around, but that's to be expected from an inn that has been around for a very long time, and I think it's part of the charm. Staff were friendly and helpful, and the addition of leaving Easter Eggs outside all the rooms on Easter Sunday was a lovely touch. No real parking on site like many hotels in the area, but as it was a weekend with bank holiday, the nearby multi-storey car park was free to use which was very handy. All in all, a perfectly positioned hotel at a very reasonable price, so would happily visit again

"Reunion"

2
01/04/2018

14 family members on the annual get together and thus year we chose the Red Lion in Salisbury as the location was equidistant for everyone travelling. We had booked in November for our March visit but when trying to book a table in the restaurant on the Friday we found that there was nothing available as a 'function' had been booked. The same problem occurred the following night and so we had to find a restaurant to accommodate our party. A lounge and bar could have had an area set aside for 'residents' to eat equally we could have been apprised of the problem prior to our arrival thereby enabling us to pre book and not had the stress of finding a restaurant last minute. (The receptionist did help us but this was obviously on her initiative.) The hotel is ideal for a visit to Salisbury as it's location is excellent. The staff could be better deployed as the bar was often left unattended and required a wait before being served. So better management will make this a good visit.

"Seamstress Suite--Simply Amazing"

5
31/03/2018

Stayed in the Seamstress Suite for two nights and wow, it is simply stunning. Not just the room--the service and smiles from the staff who served us afternoon tea and dinner made us feel so welcome and special. The room--well, having stayed here twice now we haven't been let down. The first time we stayed in what we would call a Junior Suite and this was beautifully refurbished and such a lovely room. This time we got the relatively newly created Seamtress Suite and wow. This isn't the quality of a 3 star hotel...this is the quality of a 5 star hotel. They say a picture speaks a thousand words but trust me, the reality speaks even more. In a City with so much history (of the old variety rather than current history in the making!) this hotel blends the old with the new very well, especially this suite! You feel very special from the moment you walk in with its luxury soft furnishings and oh so comfortable bed. This suite is up in the eaves overlooking the stunning courtyard and it was so relaxing hearing the rain falling on the roof above us. We had afternoon in the Victoria lounge and this was simply quaint, and just what was needed mid-afternoon. Scones that were so warm and fluffy and cakes that were so yummy, all in the surroundings of an open fire and comfortable furniture. For dinner we chose to eat again in the Victoria Lounge rather than the main restaurant as we were so chilled and wanted something a little less formal and again it was great food. Hot, plentiful and accompanied by superb service. The duty manager is an absolute credit to the hotel. The only minor point for improvement for us would be the main restaurant itself. Is in one of the oldest parts of the hotel but they could blend some of the contemporary feel of the Victoria Lounge into here--felt a bit too much like an old people's waiting room. We stay in a lot of hotels and don't often try to go back to the same place but will definitely be keen to stay here again. Thank you Red Lion team!

"Lovely!!"

"Perfect - if you don't actually want to sleep"

2
25/03/2018

I stayed at this hotel with friends on Saturday 24th March. I was allocated room 42 which was large and clean but in much need of a refurb. The room over looked the main road which I thought nothing of at the time. We had a lovely day exploring the city before heading out for dinner later in the evening. We returned to the hotel at 23:30 and that was when the problems started. Across the road is the Cathedral Hotel and Bar which was very loud and open until 2am. When that kicked out, people hung around eating kebabs and talking on the street below our bedroom. The last time I looked at the clock it was 03:50 and I believe I finally managed to fall asleep. The hotel itself is cute and quirky. The staff were friendly and breakfast was good. I just wish that I had been pre warned about the potential noise. The cathedral hotel website mentions the bar and noise so why does the red lion not do the same? Then customers can make an informed decision on whether or not to stay. I paid £120 to not sleep which I really don't think is good enough. It might be okay during the week but really quite a bad experience for a Saturday night.

"Lovely 12th century inn, but avoid restaurant"

21/03/2018

We stayed here for 1 night in March, using a TravelZoo voucher (£99 for 1 night, including a 3-course dinner with Prosecco, and breakfast). Pluses: 1) This is a gorgeous, historical coaching inn from the 12th century. It has a beautiful Tudor style, and the medieval "bones" are even exposed in glass in the dining room. I was worried that being a Best Western it wouldn't maintain its historical character, but it has. 2) Wonderful common space lounge area with a roaring fire, coffee/tea/bar service, and wingback chairs 3) Lovely preserved courtyard 4) Comfy beds with fluffy white duvets 5) Excellent location in town center, walkable to train station and cathedral 6) Clean, quiet, secure 7) In-room coffee and tea, including a French press 8) Free wifi Minuses: 1) The restaurant is a nightmare. Our 3-course dinner took 45 minutes just to get our starters, and another 45 minutes for the mains; the dining room was not busy, and all the diners' meals were taking this long. We inquired as to where our food was, and were given a laughing "it's bad, isn't it" response. Then all the waiters hid and we didn't see them again until the food arrived. The food was good, not great, and definitely not worth a 2-hour wait (including desserts). 2) Not a lot of outlets in the rooms 3) The rooms need attention. Our bathtub was literally crushed in, probably by a boot. Paint is peeling, and carpets are stained. Some windows in the hallways don't close, and it was snowing! Overall, recommend, as long as you avoid the restaurant.

"Parking???"

21/03/2018

Nice hotel and good location. Check in was a bit slow but not a problem. Good size well appointed rooms. Only complaint was it said there was free parking. On arrival when we asked we were told there was none. Apart from that a good stay.

"outstanding lunch"

19/03/2018

I live near to Salisbury and had never dreamt of eating at this hotel. What an excellent lunch was had by 5 of us, not just the quality but also delightful presentation, This was as good a lunch as I have had anywhere for a long time.

"Cynical exploitation of those trapped by the weather"

1
18/03/2018

I got stuck in Salisbury due to extreme weather stopping all trains and blocking all roads to my destination. I booked a room here on the train using the hotel website. That bit went well apart from the fact that the website doesn't hold a room for you so if you aren't quick you lose the rate you are on. Checkin was fine and the room was pleasant. I went to the bar for a drink and the barman was ice cold, I felt like and inconvenience to him. He didn't even say hello. I settled down to sleep at night and kept getting woke up by scratching sounds in the roofspace. I thought it was a rat! There were two staff present at night and both of those guys were pretty good. They worked out that pigeons were getting in and I was relieved it wasn't a rat. There were no rooms free so I was stuck with it and didn't get much sleep. I went down for breakfast in the morning and this is when it really started to go off the rails. The lady doing breakfast was extremely unfriendly and the breakfast was sparse and dry. However, by far the worst aspect of my stay was the con artist style tactics employed by the receptionist. Before breakfast I asked what the cheapest room available was on a flexible rate. I was told £85 and that I would have to give 48 hours cancellation notice, effectively making the room non-cancellable. I could tell by the way that the receptionist told me the cancellation period that something odd was going on. She seemed to be making it up. I said I would think about it and went away. I looked on the hotel website and, surprise surprise, there was a room for £70 cancellable up to 4pm that day! I booked it. I went back and the lady on reception was not happy that I had booked this room. She then started to book me in and said that once this was done I couldn't cancel. I said I would wait to book in. I then went and managed to get a train after many hours of waiting in the station. I called to cancel and whoever I spoke to said that was ok I then got back home and got a call off the receptionist saying she was charging my card for both nights! She eventually knocked off £35 from a £200 bill. Now, fair enough I was after the 4pm cutoff for cancellation but the hotel can't have a cancellation policy that it changes to suit itself and then have no flexibility the other way. She said she couldn't do the full refund as there was a £35 charge for booking through the website. We'll I wouldn't have booked through the website if you hadn't lied to me? I feel I was done over by this hotel. I paid £175 for one night in room with pigeons in the roofspace and a poor breakfast. The worst aspect is the outright dishonesty of the receptionist in an attempt to exploit trapped travellers. Really shocking.

"Great location, courtyard; bathroom/plumbing could be updated"

14/03/2018

The staff was great, lovely little hotel and a wonderful courtyard for having snacks, a drink. The food was delicious (we had a fixed price 3 course dinner as part of a school group tour). The room was fine, but the shower was sort of strange and ran out of water (lost all pressure) about 2 minutes into my shower.

William W, General Manager at Best Western Red Lion Hotel, responded to this review
Dear Donkeyowner, I greatly appreciate your taking the time to place your review of the Red Lion. I am glad you enjoyed most aspects of your stay. Although I am sorry there were issues with the shower in your room. I do hope we will have the opportunity to see you once again in Salisbury. I would like to say thank you for not only choosing the Red Lion, but again for taking the time to let us know about your stay. Sincerely, William Weis General Manager

"Cosy and charming "

13/03/2018

I've stayed previously in a Best Western hotel in Bath and loved its charm. The Red Lion was equally charming, typically English and comfortable. The lady in reception was very affable and helpful. We arrived on a Saturday afternoon for an overnight stay and although the hotel doesn't have a car park you can use a nearby car park (4 minutes or so walk) and this car park is free after 3pm and free all day Sunday so we were able to leave our car there and not pay a penny in parking which is always a bonus! We had a free room upgrade because our allocated rooms on was not quite ready. The room was charming, warm , clean and comfortable and my husband was impressed by the cafetière and filter coffee in the room also. Hotel is conveniently situated for city hall which is the reason we stayed in Salisbury (concert in aforementioned venue). Breakfast was very pleasant; one minor thing was that the breakfast tea and coffee could have been hotter. Would definitely stay here again or recommend.

Dear Nicola L, Thank you for your kind review of your recent stay with us. I do hope you had time to see some of our hidden gems of history in the Red Lion. I do hope we will have the opportunity to welcome you back to Salisbury. Sincerely, William Weis General Manager

"Spot on for Salisbury centre"

01/03/2018

This is a very good hotel to stay in. Though only 3 star you get very good value for your money. The hotel seems steeped in history and even the creaking floors add to its character. You can almost imagine the horse drawn carriages arriving in the courtyard. The hotel is full of character and in warmer times there are places to sit outside and you could be anywhere. On colder days, like we had on our visit, there is cosy lounge area with a log fire burning. Centrally located, within walking distance of town centre and the Cathedral. We had to ask for help in getting radiator on and the response from the front desk was immediate and our room very quickly warmed up. Can't vouch for food as we did not eat in the hotel only because we had other plans. Book with confidence, you won't be disapppointed.

William W, General Manager at Best Western Red Lion Hotel, responded to this review
Dear Chris B, I would like to thank you for reviewing the Red Lion. I am glad you enjoyed your stay with us and the character of our historic hotel. 19/02/2018

This is a lovely hotel, very welcoming and friendly. The hotel certainly has charm and the décor is impressive. Our room which we upgraded was well worth the extra £20, very clean and well equipped. The menu for our evening meal was varied and well presented. The waiting staff are polite and courteous and showed great patience whilst dealing with an elderly guest. I would advise pre-booking the parking as the hotel has very limited spaces.

"Lovely Hotel"

29/01/2018

The Red Lion was built for the draughtsmen of the cathedral in 1220. What a lovely place to stay. Rooms are very comfortable and modern in contrast to the old fashioned feel of the hotel. Staff were fantastic, Wi-Fi worked very well, breakfast was magic, best scrambled eggs I have had which I haven't cooked myself. Facilties in the room were great - ironing board, iron, tea & coffee, fan, shampoo, bottled water, tv, great beds and heating easily controllable. Brilliant, beautiful, friendly and right in the middle of the city.

Excellent hotel. The parking is a bit tricky but I found a car park just behind the hotel which worked for me. The TV was not working but I was so tired I didn't really need it. Internet was good. Bed was a bit hard

Dear Philcooper1000, Thank you for taking the time to post your review for our hotel. I am glad you enjoyed your stay and I am happy to report the fault with the television's reception has been rectified. Four of us stayed for 2 nights on a special deal and reserved a slot in the small car park. The staff were exceptionally friendly and helpful - they would have kept the bar open all night for us if we had wished. The en-suite rooms were clean, warm and comfortable. The breakfasts in the lovely restaurant were very good. Dinner was excellent: simply the best sirloin steaks that any of us had tasted in years. Overall the hotel is welcoming and full of character. We loved it!

This hotel balances reasonable price and good quality. I stayed here for one night as a base for attending a function going on nearby. "Christmas Day Lunch"

3
12/01/2018

Disappointing. Although booked and paid for well in advance we were greeted by "we expected you at 12.00pm" We arrived on the dot of 2.00pm as booked. Given it was Christmas Day it would have been nice if the staff had managed a greeting and a smile. The promised arrival drink didn't materialise but we were compensated by a discount off the wine. That said the food (all pre- ordered) was fine and the service okay if unfriendly.

10/01/2018

This was my first visit to Salisbury and on a whole I enjoyed it.Upon checking in I enquire about the car park to be told it was £15 for the night.Bit over the top as there is a car park next to the hotel which cost me £2.50 until 9am the next morning. The hotel itself is nice,My room (70) was excellent.Nice and spacious and spotlessly clean.Didnt eat in the restaurant so can't comment but stopped in the bar for a pint after eating in town and can quite honestly say it was one of the worst pints of lager I have had.It stank and had a bad taste to it. Upon bringing this to the bar mans attention I was told there had not been any other complaints and he felt it was ok. Maybe no other complaints as I was the only person in the bar.Shame as I enjoyed the hotel and it's in a great location.

Great 2 night stay with friends to see in the New Year. Good rooms, good food, good entertainment, good location and great staff. All 6 of us enjoyed our stay and we thoroughly enjoyed our visit. From initial booking to leaving on 2nd January - we were all very well looked after. Well done and we will come back!

We enjoyed our visit to the Red Lion hotel. It is an interesting historic building with lots of character somewhat enhanced by the cold rooms which are in need of refurbishment. Staff were friendly and the breakfast was good. A great location in the centre of town.

"Extremely disappointing stay!"

03/01/2018

We visited Salisbury the week prior to Christmas. We had seen the hotel from the outside on a previous visit and were really excited to be staying there. The receptionist was pleasant on booking us in and said she would book us into a refurbished room. However, the room was dull, grey and looked out on to a side street. The bathroom did appear to have been renewed recently. We were booked for dinner on our first night and went into the dining room which was empty, cold and uninspiring. The waiter took our order for food and we waited expectantly. The starters arrived and mine was a goats cheese tart. The pastry was so tough I could hardly cut it and so left most of it. The main courses arrived and the plates were completely cold, hence the food was lukewarm. The waiter had advised me that the pork which I had ordered was the best choice! We commented to the waiter on the lukewarm food and he didn't seem interested. I left virtually all of mine and no comment was made by the waiter when he removed the plates. Breakfast the following morning was also a disasppointment. There were warmed plates but there were no hash browns, baked beans or black pudding. The bacon was fatty and uninteresting. The following morning still no hash browns but the rest of the breakfast was acceptable. We advised the receptionist when checking out of the disappointment we encountered and asked her to ensure that the Manager was told of the problems in the dining room. She apologised and said she would make sure the information was passed on. Whether or not she did is another matter as we have heard nothing from the hotel. All in all a very sad few days in a hotel which needs some love and investment. On a positive note we loved Salisbury and all the Christmassy things which were on offer.

Great place to stay for a visit to Salisbury / Stonehenge. Fully renovated to 3/4 star standard, but maintaining the look and feel of it's long history since 1220. Has parking on site and next to a casual car park, so perfect for driving tour. Walking distance from town centre and cathedral. Restaurant on site, and also lots of options nearby. Highly recommended

We had a night here and it was pretty good. The room itself was nice and had been recently renovated which was good. The service was a little confused at times and the signage to the rooms around the place didn't help. Certainly no shortage of character

When we stayed before we had a wonderful quirky room. This late booking was in a drab, grey and cold refurbished room. The bathroom was really unpleasant, so cold. The room key had to be recharged by reception every time we wanted to go into it. No joke as it was down two flights of stairs. The staff were miserable. The restaurant closed on a Saturday night. To add a further insult the breakfast was inedible with almost raw bacon. We went out for breakfast. All in a beautiful historic building. This hotel has been better and could be again.

William W, General Manager at Best Western Red Lion Hotel, responded to this review
Dear Pauline R, Thank you for taking the time to post your review of the Red Lion. Please accept my apologies your stay with us did not meet your expectations. I am sorry your room on your second visit was not one of our feature rooms as in your previous visit. As these are popular rooms, we do hope if you have the opportunity to stay with us again, you will be able to request a feature room. Again, please accept my apologies as in December we are extremely busy and due to capacity we do close our Vine Restaurant but our Victoria Lounge and 1220 Bar always remain open for all of our guests. I do hope we will have the opportunity to welcome you back to the Red Lion in the future. Sincerely, William Weis General Manager

We stayed Saturday 16 December one night. Hotel really lovely, staff professional friendly approachable helpful, room really high standard, breakfast delicious. A perfect stay centrally located. "A Character Hotel in the centre of Salisbury"

4
17/12/2017

This Hotel is in a great position to explore Salisbury on foot. Our room was small and we had to walk along several corridors to reach it and yes the car park is small and difficult to gain access to, but this hotel does date back to the 13th century when car parking wasn't an issue. The Vine restaurant in the Red Lion offers excellent food at reasonable prices and was also a pleasant room. We also found the breakfast was extremely good. Most of the staff in the restaurant and reception were friendly and helpful and we will probably return sometime in the future..

"Miserable Barman"

2
17/12/2017

Popped in for a drink with friends, the place was very quiet, went to the bar to be met by the most miserable, uninterested barman I have ever encountered. No greeting,no eye contact,I had to ask for ice and a slice in the G&Ts as the glasses with just the Gin in were unceremoniously plonked down. Alex the barman is doing the Red Lion no favours with his totally unprofessional and sultry, miserable attitude!!

"Paid or a suite and got a superior room"

2
12/12/2017

We wanted a quiet break away so booked a suite through booking.com. However upon allocation we got room 29, which most certainly was not a suite. We did query this at reception but were told this is a suite as it has 2 wing chairs. It is advertised on the Red Lion website as only a superior room no mention of suite there. The bathroom was tired with no hot water in the shower. The room was freezing as heating switched off. A disco started up and was supposed to finish at 11:30, the music carried on until gone 1am. I have emailed requesting a partial refund for not getting what we booked but have not even received a reply. Pretty disgusted basically!

"Poor experience"

11/12/2017

Car park reserved 2 months before was lost and other guests had same problem! Had to park miles away and walk in driving rain! Small tired bedroom with quilt that only overhung bed by 2" freezing cold as not thick enough. Breakfast was rubbish

"Cold and miserable stay in the Red Lion Hotel"

1
10/12/2017

Allocated room 34 on arrival, the heating was turned off in the room which we turned on as it was freezing, however the bathroom remained freezing cold as the only heating was the towel rack. Did not manage to get to sleep until after 01:40am due to the constant stream of Christmas revellers shouting and hollering as they left different functions in the hotel, not also helped by those staying in the hotel having problems with the security doors when trying to enter the hotel. When I complained at reception in the morning they told me that I should have been told when booking that it was going to be noisy!!!!, well I wasn't!!

"Noise noise noise"

2
09/12/2017

Sadly our night away was ruined by the inconsiderate business The Cathedral hotel and its awful music and inability to shut its doors. The night porter acknowledged this as a regular complaint from guests. If this a known issue why put guests in rooms over looking Milford street at a weekend it's profit before customer experience. We will not be back which is a shame as the room was nice and staff good.

"Last minute trip"

3
06/12/2017

It is very old worldly and perhaps needs a bit of work! The stairs and corridors look worrying however once into your room you will be pleasantly surprised. Clean and full of character. The staff are very low key, helpful if required and very pleasant, smiles all round! There are lots of restaurants to choose from in the close proximity of the city centre and the hotel is bang in the centre of things! I ate in the hotel and I enjoyed the experience, however I am here alone on business if I was on a weekend getaway I would have ventured out.

28/11/2017

Stayed at this hotel on a mid week break Travelzoo deal .Booking was easy and efficient and our welcome upon arrival was very friendly. We were given Room 33 which was clean and comfortable overlooking the central courtyard. One minor point about this room was the lack of a mirror in the bedroom for drying my wifes hair. Our deal included a glass of prosecco and a 3 course dinner on our first night, all of which made our deal excellent value .Dinner was good with attentive service. Breakfast was self service and very good with an excellent choice of food. All the staff we encountered during our stay were friendly and welcoming .We can thoroughly recommend this centrally located 13th century coaching inn and will definitely be returning sooner rather than later.

Just returned from a brilliant overnight stay with a deal booked through travelzoo costing £99..for this we got dinner bed & breakfast & 2 glasses of prosecco .The room had been updated..there is other traditional rooms but this room was lovely. I liked the little touch of a cafetière & teapot along with the tea supplies. The meal in the restaurant was very good apart from our drinks getting forgotten twice & our sauce not getting returned after we asked if it could be warmed up...the food was so nice & the staff friendly we will let them off. The breakfast was excellent too. We would not hesitate to recommend this hotel ...Salisbury is a lovely place to visit and this hotel made it extra special....we will be returning. Tip: if your staying on a Sunday night ..hotel has parking(£15) but carpark behind hotel is only £1.70.for 3 hrs..& is free after 4pm.. You then can purchase a 3hr ticket for the next day.

18/11/2017

We were traveling to Lyme Regis and decided to breakup the drive. Salisbury was the town we decided on. What a pleasant surprise. How lucky were we that The Red Lion had available rooms. We had the choice of a modern room or a traditional room. When staying in a 13th century inn we enthusiastically chose the traditional room. The rooms were stunningly beautiful, comfortable and clean. The breakfast and the breakfast room was amazing. What a great way to start our vacation.

This was an amazing evening. I can't remember when was the last time I laughed so much, in spite of resolving murder case. Most of the people turned up in incredible costumes and played their characters very well. The food was really, really good - the best Pumpkin soup I've ever had and staff very attentive. The actors interacted with us and at the end awarded the best played character and costume. Definitely recommend it.

Just stopped here one night , everything was fine for us apart from being woken very early by the beer barrels being moved around in the courtyard under our room ! We were on a Travelzoo offer which included bed and breakfast, dinner and glass of prosseco each, good value for under £100. The receptionist and all staff we met were friendly and helpful. We stayed in room 43 which is located in a separate part of the hotel accessed across the courtyard. The room was fine although dated but clean and comfortable. The bed and pillows were of a good quality. Dinner was in the Vine restaurant which is quirky with beams and interesting artefacts . The food was fine but light on veg .The service was slow but we weren't in a hurry so no problem . Breakfast was excellent and set us up for the day along with very good coffee. The location of this hotel is perfect to explore this interesting city . Thank you for a good stay .

I have been going to the Red Lion for many years and the recent management upgrade has had a terrific impact. Clean, professional and a joy to be at. The room was great and had a view of the cathedral. Knowing that the masons who built the cathedral stayed in the same place made me feel very connected to the history of Salisbury. It is a great place to stay and it a perfect locatioin.

We had the Seamstress Suite, a very big double bed (with a cool bath tub in front of it), comfortable sofa bed and great bathroom. Hotel with alot of history, small corridors and well maintained. Easy to walk to the town.

Lovely staff, all very helpful and cheerful. We had a very good room, number 90 on first floor, in terms of size and everything else. Excellant shower, tea, coffee, biscuits, water, decent sized TV. Only a couple of things stopped it being perfect - there was no power point for the hairdryer near to a mirror and our view from the window was of the Alzeimers Society Charity shop, perhaps they were trying to tell us something. Dinner was pretty good. Bit disappointed that the chicken stuffed with ham and cheese did not have ham or cheese. Waiter took it back and kitchen re cooked it as it should have been. As we both ordered this it was not a problem waiting for it to be re cooked and we were offered a complimentary drink to keep us occupied. Breakfast was excellant. We like to start with fruit and there was a large selection. Cooked breakfast included all the usual with eggs cooked to order. Lovely old building kept in pretty good order.

"Old hotel in a great location"

02/11/2017

We stayed here for an overnight stay whilst on business in Salisbury. The hotel is very old but well maintained and in a great location inn the center of Salisbury. The room was a good size and well decorated, with a reasonable bathroom (always difficult for an older hotel). The staff were pleasant and helpful and there were good areas to relax or have a drink.

Well positioned hotel in center of town and Salisbury is an easy place to cover on foot - a favorite of ours for a few days away. If you want to visit the surrounding area, various bus stops are just along the road from the hotel (5 mins). Good lounge service. Excellent breakfast selection and cheerful smiling waiter giving good service. Hotel has mixture of newer modern or more 'character' bedrooms as they say - which are a little tired in places but fine - good comfortable beds which are important. We've stayed in a variety of rooms over the last couple of years and inner rooms (overlooking courtyard or at the back of hotel overlooking public car park) are quieter. Some rooms involve steps and twisting corridors and only part of the hotel has lift access so you would need to check with hotel before booking if you have mobility problems. Public parking available behind hotel in Brown Street - get a voucher (£10 per 24 hours) from Hotel Reception upon checking in and save yourself having to feed the parking meter.

Lovely quaint hotel with lots of charm and atmosphere. Food and service excellent and very reasonably priced meals and drinks. We had a superior room with a comfortable four poster bed and a lovely beamed ceiling. The wedding was beautiful and the hotel staff worked very hard to ensure all went well. Overall a lovely hotel which I would recommend.

Booked an executive suite for a night away with my husband. Our suite was directly over the function rpom where a very loud disco plaued all night. Why when the hotel was fully booked with wedfing guests was our room the closest to the noise???? Reception most unhelpful will never stay in a Best Western again.

"Weekend Stay"

18/10/2017

We had the best weekend staying at the Red Lion. Our room was newly renovated, clean, comfortable and the noise from the street was blocked out by secondary glazing leading to a good nights sleep. We attended a function in the function suite in the evening which was excellent, we made good use of the beautiful courtyard and the lounge bar. We ate in the hotel for breakfast and dinner both nights, the food was lovely and the staff were very attentive. Overall a great stay with a comfy bed and brilliant staff, we will be revisiting 100% and would recommend the Red Lion for everything from a family trip to a business function.

"Amazing Ladies Weekend"

17/10/2017

We have just got back from holding a Masonic ladies weekend, and i can not thank all the members of staff there enough for making it a perfect weekend. The organisation was perfect, as was the food. The rooms were lovely - clean and comfortable. The hotel itself is stunning - steeped in history and ideally located . All members of staff were excellent, especially Fanica, who stayed beyond her shift to make sure the Saturday evening went as it should, William the General manager and Stuart behind the bar. Many people said it was one of the best ladies weekends they had attended , and said they would return to the hotel, as would we for sure. Can not recommend highly enough, thank you all.

Having had a disappointing lunch last Christmas Day we were all wondering and hoping for better things with the cream tea which thankfully did not let us down. There were nine of us and the food arrived punctually, absolutely masses of it with our choice of unlimited Earl Grey tea.Generously filled sanwiches, individual quiche, good variety of cakes and scones with jam and clotted cream. We all thoroughly enjoyed ourselves! A big thank you to all the staff.

24/09/2017

On the plus side, excellent central location, beautiful building steeped in history, most staff friendly and helpful. Perhaps good for an overnight stay for those wishing to get out and about and explore Salisbury. But disappointing all the same and definitely not value for money. This place could do with a serious face-lift. A 'lounge' with service and refreshments no better than a downbeat motorway cafe. A bar with a huge, loud TV and a couple of regular drunks dominating everything. Definitely not comfy and cosy. Faded elegance in the older rooms - which could do with a thorough deep clean. No fridges in rooms which came as something of a surprise. Furnishings tired, worn and somewhat depressing. Lift not working when we arrived. Not good for my friend with serious knee problems. A pleasant enough courtyard and the vine was glorious. Overall impression: rather seedy, not even 'quaint'. With a bit of effort it could be so much better.

"Lunch"

21/09/2017

The Red Lion relies too much on its history. We have a meal there each time we visit Salisbury. We have found the quality if the food has got poorer over the past few years and is not good value for the price. The hotel is pleasant and the staff helpful.

"A special weekend let down by poor service and lack of attention to detail"

1
18/09/2017

My wife booked us into the Red Lion for a couple of nights for my 50th Birthday. The room was expensive but as it was a special occasion she did not mind. However she did ask for a bottle of bubbly to be placed in the room for our arrival. She was told this was not a problem. When we arrived though no bottle. She went to reception to enquire and apparently her email arrived too late eventuality she rang before we left south Wales to inform our arrival time . So we got our own bottle, asked for an ice bucket in reception and was offered a pint glass of ice. 2nd attempt produced an ice bucket ,enquiry made about long glasses , told none in room but none were offered ( there were 3 staff present)!! The room -- roman blind all disconnected. Could not lift it hence the room was in darkness. Out of 5 led ceiling lights only 2 were working leaving the room even darker. No chest of drawers hence storage space for clothes was poor. I don't know how you would manage if staying for more than couple of days. Bath plug chain missing. I had to dig the plug out with a spoon . Found chain later under the bath and re attached it myself. Room cleaning service dire. Left the notice on the door for the room to be made up. Came back for a coffee at 11:30 room still not done. Came back around 1:15 to find the maid just about to start. Parking is an issue. Only space for 6 cars so I had to park in the public car park behind the hotel at. Cost of £20 for two days. The car had about 8-9 carpark sinks in one door when we left to go home. Not good. Not the hotels fault but something to bear in mind if using your car. Noise on the weekends is an issue with rowdy alcohol plied people coming out of the nearby clubs during the early hours. My wife paid £300 for two nights and this did not include breakfast. We don't mind paying for quality but sadly this hotel does not have it. It is overpriced and is charging for its close proximity to market Square which is it's only plus point. We won't be staying here again and I strongly advise anyone not to book here ,better looking elsewhere. A letter of complaint has been sent to Best Western as we were so disappointed in the hotel and customer service from the staff.

"Lovely hotel"

17/09/2017

I had absolutely no preconceptions about this hotel as I attended with a group of friends and did absolutely no organising! So I was pleasantly surprised on arrival, pretty courtyard, pleasant lounge and recently refurbished and clean. The staff were friendly and helpful although often run off their feet which rubbed a few other guests up the wrong way. We didn't spend much time in the hotel but we did have afternoon tea which I was slightly disappointed with. I am vegetarian and we had phoned ahead and advised the hotel of this not unusual dietary requirement only to be presented with salmon sandwiches (amongst others) when we mentioned this to the waiter and told him vegetarians don't eat fish he basically just shrugged. Luckily a friend swapped with me in the end but I think the sandwich selection for vegetarians definitely needs revising. On the whole though, a lovely little hotel in a great location.

"Nice, but could do better!"

17/09/2017

I stayed at the Red Lion for six nights. I had a very nice double room, with everything you could need, but, sadly, it was on the road side, which meant that having the window open for any length of time meant fumes from the traffic coming in. I was just grateful it wasn't in summer when the weather is warmer, and you need some fresh air. I found the bed a bit too firm for my liking, but that's down to personal choice of course. The staff were all really lovely – willing and helpful, and couldn't do enough for me. The hotel itself is a lovely old building, and only five minutes from the shops, and five minutes by taxi or car from the railway station. Sadly, I do need to write some negative remarks. This is the second time this year that I have stayed in a hotel in the UK where the cleaning isn't done thoroughly enough. On first glance, the room itself is fine, as is the bathroom….. BUT! As you can see from the photo, the toilet roll holder hadn't been dusted for weeks – I stroked my finger along the top, and that's where you can see the bits of dust built up. Also, why can cleaners not see the ridges in places like baths and doors? The ridges at the bottom of the bath obviously hadn't been done properly for months. All it would take is a wet cloth to clean things properly. I would expect a hotel that charges the amount it does to clean to a very high standard. There were a couple of mistakes with my room service orders. One day, my lunch was half an hour late, and when eventually it did arrive, they'd used the wrong bread. I was so hungry at that point that I didn't have the heart to tell them! However, they did give me a discount for another meal to make up for it. Another lunchtime sandwich had the wrong ingredients, and that had to be sent back, and replaced. Simple errors that shouldn't have been made. The food in general was very good, but don't expect the restaurant meals to be very big! As you can see from the picture, the pork that I had was sadly lacking in vegetables – just a few leaves of spinach hiding underneath. I was told you can order extra vegetables, but there is no mention of it under Side Orders on the menu. Unfortunately, the green beans I ordered after that were so hard, they must have been dunked in hot water, and brought out straight away. I could hardly cut them, let alone eat them! Although the food at breakfast was cooked well, I did find that the scrambled eggs were only ever luke warm, despite only adding them to my plate after I had chosen everything else. I found the wifi very good, but the tv picture kept breaking up for some reason. The shower was most impractical as it was fixed high on the wall. How are you meant to wash your underarms and ‘bits'?! Despite the negative points, I did enjoy my stay here, and WOULD recommend it – with reservations. Do make sure you visit the Queen Elizabeth Gardens when you're there – they are beautiful! Also The Maltings shopping area is very picturesque, and worth a visit.

"Slow...slow....slow"

16/09/2017

We came here on several occasions for lunch and each time the waiters were incredibly slow in taking orders for food and drinks. The meals were nice but there was always something incorrect on each order, such as white bread instead of brown, pickle in a cheese sandwich when asked for it to be plain etc. Not huge mistakes but basic ones at the very least! For a hotel of such standing you would think that there would be more efficient communication between the staff and kitchen and generally they need to speed up, not everyone has time to spend 2-3hrs on lunch! Poor show Red Lion.

"The Worst of British"

14/09/2017

Good common areas, but once you enter the residents accommodation it is like going back 50 years. The place is tawdry. Rooms are small with poor noise insulation so you can here the TV in the next door room. Lights not working in both bedroom and bathroom. There must be better value.

"Disaster"

10/09/2017

We booked an executive room. I have to say on first look the room was great, bed comfortable. No food in the dining room due to an event so we ordered room service. The food was great, piping hot and so tasty. Settled in for a good sleep for sight seeing the next day. WHEN ALL HELL BROKE LOOSE. The three noisy pub/night clubs on the street opposite left us listening to screaming, shouting and drunken singing, no point in putting the TV on,you won't hear it. At half past midnight we had to pack up and leave. If you plan to stay make sure and ask for a room at the back or pack earplugs. Such a pity the hotel was beautiful

"Disappointed"

09/09/2017

The rooms shown on the website were not what we got and had we known what we were getting we wouldn't have booked. Very dated decor in the room and en suite and both looked very tired and in need of a much needed makeover. I expected better for the price.

"A little disappointing"

04/09/2017

I expected to love this hotel but in the end it was simply okay. I booked it because of the location (which is indeed very central) and its age - we love places with a history. The first 24 hours we were incredibly lucky with the weather and therefore were able to enjoy sitting in the old courtyard, which was a truly lovely experience. However, the inside of the hotel has been modernised to such an extent that it had very little of the old-world charm that I was hoping for, so on wetter days the hotel simply wasn't such a delightful place to be. Nothing wrong with it, but not a great deal of atmosphere given how important the place's history is. We tried the restaurant on the first night and the food was average to good; we were struck by the fact that we dined virtually alone on that night and the place was notably empty on the Saturday and Sunday evenings too - this seems puzzling. In terms of the individual response we received from service staff, service was good; people were polite, welcoming and accommodating, particularly at the Reception desk. However, they really let us down on an important issue. Having rung to discuss several days beforehand and also spoken to them immediately on our arrival about the fact that my husband's uniform shirts would need to be laundered and ready for first thing Monday morning, we were seriously let down on this, despite all the trouble I had taken to ensure that it could be done. The staff took the shirts on the Friday evening with the assurance that they would be turned around on the Saturday, but it seems they were let down by the local laundry, which took the shirts and then closed early without warning the hotel. Shockingly, nobody then told us this and we only discovered the problem when we asked after the shirts on the Sunday morning. The hotel staff were then completely at a loss as to what to do, and claimed to have no washing facilities whatsoever inside the hotel itself (I am not entirely sure that I believe this). I had to float the idea of the shirts being couriered to my husband's place of work on the Monday - not ideal but the best that they could do under the circumstances, and I would have expected them to have come up with this suggestion rather than waiting for the customer to work it out for them. The room was strangely hot, even though we left the windows wide open for much of the time in what was not always great weather. It was also not as clean as I would expect - layers of dust on the moulded tiles in the bathroom, hair in the bath on one morning and dust inside the wardrobe too. Overall, I think I would try a different hotel for a return visit to the area. Interestingly, this is the second "Best Western" hotel I have stayed in and the second one that I have found somewhat disappointing. I shall be bearing this in mind in future.

"Don't let this put you off..."

03/09/2017

An interesting night all in all. Very nice hotel for the money and close to everything in the centre of Salisbury. Our room was pleasant with the only issue being a shower that bordered on cold. Our problems began as we went to bed and heard the noise coming from the local bars (closed at 2am on Saturday night). After eventually falling asleep we realised how thin our walls were when BBC Breakfast woke us up at 6am. My wife and I never complain but we did on this occasion. I would like to add here that the Duty Manager was very apologetic and understanding. She kindly offered us a discount. I hope this doesn't put people off but be careful where your room is if staying on a Friday or Saturday.

"wedding reception"

02/09/2017

My daughter has just had her wedding reception at the Red Lion and I would recommend it for value for money and service. The Events Manager was delightful and ensured the day went without a hitch, all the staff were extremely polite and helpful. I would like to thank everyone who worked on Saturday 19th August for making it such an enjoyable occasion.

"Amazing lack of awareness and customer service"

1
28/08/2017

You'd might have thought that if a wedding party was going to take over the entire courtyard, dining hall and hotel, the staff might ring to warn anybody who'd booked a room so they'd have the option to stay somewhere else? Not so at the Red Lion where they wait right until you arrive to tell you the news. As a result, own quiet night's get-a-way (ironically for our own Wedding Anniversary) was transformed to the holiday camp from hell, by screaming kids and loud music. It's not the Wedding's fault, they are completely entitled to a knees-up, I know we did when we got married .... this is entirely the fault of the hotel staff who only thought to tell us when we turned up and had no-where else to go. Thanks guys for ruining our Anniversary. Here's an innovative idea.... If you have a large, potentially noisy event (clues would include whether you've booked a disco), in future why not ring the other guests in advance so that they have a choice whether to stay or not? You even took our phone number and email when we booked so it's not that difficult. It's called customer service and ...amazingly ....costs little.

Looking forward to nice evening meal with my wife, very disappointed food not good at all . Starters fair, main course not very good. Cheese board good wine good . Small veg portion. Will not be going again . Used to be lovely in private ownership. Bath Western took over gone downhill.

"Pretty good"

27/08/2017

I like this hotel in a spooky kind of way. It's a blend of old (very old) and new. Quirky and central in location. It could use a bit of a refurb but I suppose that adds to the charm. I liked it enough to write a review. I'd say the breakfast offer could really use a shake up because it let me down, but generally the hotel is good.

"Brilliant staff"

23/08/2017

Me and my wife had our wedding reception at the Red Lion Salisbury. They were helpful form the start of the process and always reassuring. On the day all the staff were brilliant I cannot thank them enough. I would highly recommend this hotel for a important function. The rooms are good as well so much so a number of my guests are going back to stay there again.

Great location , lovely old historical hotel , but come on best western , up date your rooms and bathrooms it like living in the 70's Expensive parking but Salisbury has cheaper options Lovely court yard

"Pretty on the outside, but hot and slimy underneath"

3
14/08/2017

The hotel is easy to find, there isn't a great amount of parking in the immediate vicinity, but it is inexpensive if you can find a spot. The rooms look modern. There wasn't a fridge or a/c unit in the room we had, but I don't know if that's throughout the entire hotel. They do breakfast and have a nice courtyard/bar area. We had a room on the ground floor, the window wouldn't stay open without being propped open. The radiator was on, despite the temperature outside being warm enough for shorts/t-shirt, so the room was stifling hot and didn't cool down. There weren't any fans or an a/c system to help with the heat either. For me, it's impossible to sleep while sweating my butt off. The bathroom looked very nice, but the shower filled up with water more quickly than the drain could handle. I used a cloth to remove the filter device for the drain and it was filthy. It probably hadn't been cleaned in months and then the water drained fine. The next day the cleaners had replaced the drain filter, but the shower was still filling faster than it could handle, so I removed the filter again and it been wiped down, but not cleaned. There was still slime and dirt on it.

Room on ground floor next to entrance. Good bed and shower but noise from people on road to past midnight and the workers coming in to work early taking loudly and waking us up. Very poor. This is a management issue. Solutions Double glaze the window! Simple. Train staff to be quiet and considerate when coming in early. Breakfast very good and scones freshly cooked. Delicious!

"After a bad start, turned into a nice stay"

3
08/08/2017

The hotel is very nice. Right in the centre of town and has a lot of old world charm. The courtyard is a very nice place to eat and drink and the food at breakfast was superb. My first room was however, terrible. The room backed onto a busy road and the exit to Salisbury's only nightclub! The curtain on the window could not be opened and the windows themselves were not double glazed and did not close properly. Consequently, I had a very bad nights sleep, the noise of drunken revellers and cars kept me awake most of the night. The next morning I asked to be moved and was given a much better and quieter room, so things improved from there! In summary, fine hotel as long as you don't get rooms 90-92!

"appalling service at bar for food and drinks"

1
02/08/2017

Went for bar food and although not busy the staff took their time to serve and bring food. They couldn't work the till. They didn't know the menu. They brought a wrong order out. Appalling and even worse- they dealt with the complaint in a very poor manner. I was unhappy with the service- it is overpriced and staff have no idea what to do and how to treat customers.

"Very poor customer service experience today...restaurant"

2
01/08/2017

Very disappointed with the quality of service here today.Staying locally and came in for dinner tonight around 6.30 pm. No welcome as we walked in, and the guy behind the bar was pretty abrupt. He also had issues working the till and in the end had to get a colleague to help him place our order. Our order when it came out was wrong. If they had apologised at this point it might have been ok.However no explanation was offered for this until it was pointed out to them. At which point they said the kitchen couldn't accommodate what we had asked for? If this was the case why did someone not have the manners to either tell as that when we ordered or at some point before the food was plonked in front of us? When we complained the manager offered to take the price of the dish off the bill, but took the meal away also, leaving one of our party sat with no meal! No one asked if she would like to order something else...Absolutely bizarre. They also started clearing the table while some of us were still eating. We were made to feel like we were an inconvenience. I use Best Western hotels quite a bit but the quality of customer service here today has left me gobsmacked. The actual food that we had was pretty good but the horrendous customer service left a very bad taste in our mouths. Plenty of better places to eat in Salisbury. Avoid unless you are a fan of very poor customer service.

"Quaint, lots of personality, great staff"

30/07/2017

Stayed here 7/19-7/20/17. Took us multiple passes through Salisbury to actually find this place. The entrance can't be driven into: good luck finding a place to park on the street. But once you find it the place is very nice; a collection of old and older and very old buildings all connected together around a couple of courtyards. The building is a maze. Staff was very friendly and very helpful to these almost-toured-out American travelers. Included breakfast was very good, room was actually two rooms connected by a hallway and a nice bathroom with both a tub and a shower. Street parking is virtually non-existent but there is VERY limited parking in one of the hotel courtyards. We tried to call in advance multiple times to reserve one of these spaces but no one ever answered the phone. Luckily there was one spot left - pricey at 15+ pounds/night - and we took it. Downtown Salisbury is pretty quiet after about 6PM but it's a nice walk. And this place is walking distance to the justly-famous Salisbury Cathedral, which is drop-dead spectacular and well-worth seeing. Sonehenge is pretty cool too!

"So charmimg"

29/07/2017

The reception manager, Dawn was an absolute delight! So friendly and helpful; she organised our breakfast outside the normal serving hours as we had to leave early. The room was clean and quiet. Our only regret is not staying longer...definitely recommend this hotel.

"Updated by BW but charm retained"

4
26/07/2017

Old coaching hotels are so super cool. We were in room 20. It had good facilities. Updated bath with tub and shower. Great size tub for a soak. The room retained many original features and preserved/exposed interior wall construction and coverings (framed like a painting). The staff were very attentive and helpful at every turn. Bar, restaurant, outdoor seating, parking, and good wifi filled out the experience. As many who visited places in UK and continent during hot spell we experienced a warm room with no AC. But staff worked to keep things manageable (top sheet upon request, a fan, curtains pulled against the sun). For services like breakfast and parking you do pay extra but I guess that is okay. Our room had no view, again not a problem. It is a city hotel. Some rooms might have had views of the courtyard. Our room was quiet for sleeping. I would recommend asking for a room not near any fire door, of which there are quite a few. Opening and closing rather noisily could be a problem for rooms nearby. Also free bottled water. No room safe. Ask for a porter if you need help with bags.

"Historic and pretty but not comfortable in summer"

I loved the look of the property, the beautiful public rooms and the friendly front desk service. My friend and I found plenty of space to store our clothes and toiletries. However, despite the fan provided in our room, sleeping was difficult due to the heat. The windows opened by tilting from the bottom out, thereby letting in exactly no fresh air. Another problem was that every day after coming back from touring, our key cards would not work and would have to be re-magnetized. We were offered various explanations such as that we kept them too close to electronics. Mine was nowhere near my phone or tablet. I was wearing it with the tour name tag hanging from my neck. Eventually we just made it a point to stop at the desk on arriving back every evening to get the cards re-magnetized.Also, on our next to last afternoon we came back to find no wastebaskets emptied and the bathroom not cleaned, although the beds were made and we did have clean towels.Difficult to discard stuff prior to checking out after a week-long tour with two small overflowing waste baskets A number of other people in our group had the same situation. The courtyard and the lounge bar were lovely, I enjoyed the breakfast and most of the dinners we had there. My suggestion would be to visit for a drink or a meal, soak in the atmosphere, and sleep somewhere more comfortable.

My husband and I want to say Ms Dawn Brand Thank you from the bottom of our heart for such a wonderful 2 night stay at the Red Lion. The hotel is not just an historic place with lots of charm, but is also very well located in the center of the city at a walking distance to the main cultural places, Restaurants and shops. We slept in a feature and quiet room with a big bathroom with Edwardian furniture. The breakfast had lots of variety. But the gold medal goes to the hotel staff always ready to help. For a 3 stars hotel every thing was perfect. Of course we will stay at the Red Lion again. 100% recommended.

I made a mistake earlier and reviewed the Red Lion in Avebury instead of the Red Lion in Salisbury. Anyway, here it is: This is a lovely hidden gem. Doesn't look much from the outside, but once you get inside the courtyard, its a great place. We had a light lunch which was very good. Service was efficient and friendly. We will stay at this hotel next time we come to Salisbury. Highly recommended.

"Lovely Historic Hotel in the City Centre"

20/07/2017

I had a very comfortable twin room with a good size en-suite bathroom. The water pressure in the shower wasn't particularly strong, but it was good enough. Due to the age of the hotel there was no air-con in the room; however, a fan was provided to aid cooling. My room window overlook the courtyard so it was very quiet at night, with excellent black out curtains over the windows. As I was staying here on a business trip I was unable to spend time sampling the breakfast or the attached 1220 bar. Although I did take a quick look in the bar and it was a very nice space with a good menu for sandwiches and snacks etc. The hotel is in a fantastic location if you want to explore the town centre or the cathedral, both of which are within easy walking distance.

Stayed here multiple times during a 3 month period whilst working in Salisbury! This is a truly beautiful building with stunning greenery and love decor, it has lots of character but the rooms still have that modern edge on them. Although I often used to get lost in the corridors!! Lol Always received a warm welcome when checking in or just passing by. The staff here are a credit to Best Western, particular mentions to the two night porters who were both top blokes! Used to eat here every night, and never once had a bad meal! Good quality food cooked to a good standard.. can't really go wrong! I think I stayed in every room in the hotel with the exception of the honeymoon loft! Every room was clean, well equipped and very comfortable! The beds were amazing and was just the right mix between firm and soft! When I return to Salisbury to visit my old colleagues the Red Lion will be the first choice hotel to stay! Thanks guys!!

First time I've stayed somewhere that's been a hotel since the 1200s! Their success must be due to their amazingly warm and accommodating staff. Also the location is ideal in the heart of Salisbury, with the cathedral a 10 minute walk away and the Stonehenge bus picking up right outside the door. I left some clothes behind and they've already shipped them back to me in the US! Our only disappointment was no AC, but they provided a fan and it wasn't nearly as hot as London had been.

I stayed four nights at this lovely hotel and without exception the staff were eager to please, friendly and going out of their way to make my experience lovely. I expressed an interest in the extraordinary clock in the foyer (do check it out it's truly creepy) and they started telling me about the weird and wonderful things in various other rooms then - as the rooms became empty, they showed them to me. At dinner they were solicitous and very patient with the dietary requirements of others in my party, and were always attentive. This hotel is gorgeous. Room 27 is my favourite, looking out over the stunning courtyard. Room 19 has a very, very creepy bed head (worth a look) and Room 22 has a magnificent, ancient fireplace. I can't praise this staff enough. Every single one was charming.

11/07/2017

Booked 1 night B&B, paid extra for a more easily accessible room, as there is no lift. Disappointed, as there were several small sets of stairs we had to pull case up. Room was nicely furnished but quite pokey. Little room to move around. Breakfast was a help yourself buffet. For the price paid was disappointing. Hotel is situated right in heart of the City, ideal for sightseeing, difficult for car parking. Only allowed to dtop off luggage. Receptionist was quite distant, seemed distracted. The enclosed patio at front is charming. Were visiting daughter. Would not stay there again, usual like Best Western Hotels, not this time.

Three night stay here, wonderful hotel for the price. Gorgeous courtyard to enjoy a drink and not busy which was lovely. Very nice lounge inside as well. The hotel is really quite stunning. Our room was superior and very nice, a couple of small grumbles - there was a water tank dripping somewhere which could be annoying at times. The bathroom was really lovely - roll top bath and all the trimmings - however the towel rail had black liquid leaking from the top of it which went all over the towels and it took us a while to realise what it was. The replaced the towels but the rail was still sticky when we left. Also the set up of the room is hard to blow dry/style hair in the long mirror (a common problem in hotels I think). But all in all highly recommend this hotel. Very comfortable and huge bed. Great location. All of the staff were extremely friendly and helpful.

03/07/2017

Every room is different clearly when i spoke to my colleagues the next morning. Ask for room 48, its lovely, very clean, stylish and neutral, though looks over the main street. Breakfast was fine, though when i went for main cooked breakfast my tea and juice had disappeared. We were going to have dinner in hotel that night and we walked around and no one greeted us, so we left and went else where. If you do choose room 48, ask for someone to take your suitcase upstairs, promise me it will help. One of the managers who was hanging around reception when i checked in was wearing very tight trousers, can i suggest wearing loser trousers in your role!

"Restaurant Disappointing"

3
26/06/2017

The hotel is well located in the centre of things and the staff are very pleasant and helpful. Our room was good and well furnished. The restaurant lets everything down, a very limited menu and quality of food was mediocre, after a full day travelling I was looking forward to a good dinner and was very disappointed. When I booked I was relying of the Best Western brand, I would not dine here again and probably would not stay because I prefer to dine in-house. My wife is vegetarian and it was even worse for her.

"Drinks in the courtyard "

25/06/2017

We have been living in Salisbury for the last 5/6 months and have regularly frequented the Courtyard and bar for food and drinks. The outside Courtyard is a perfect venue for a casual drink with friends and family. Unfortunately we have experienced a very poor attitude from weekend bar staff that spoiled our recent visit. We will not be returning.

We regularly visit here for lunch, especially when friends visit. We love the setting and their lunch menu offers a good selection of foods, good quality and value for money. However, when we visited this Tuesday with friends we were charged £4 difference for the same round of drinks. We questioned this with the barman and waitress and we're told the manager would have to be called. We were then ignored. No one came to explain. No one came to clear our table. Very poor customer service has put us off returning.

Atmospheric, historic hotel with a beautiful courtyard. Labyrinthine (and quaint) corridors and stairs — worked well because we travel light, but if you have big suitcases, it would be a drag. Security was quite good! We were there with friends for two nights on a weekend splurge. The bar and restaurant were still a bit pricey, so we went out for breakfast and dinner. The rooms we had were clean, comfortable, and well-appointed (tea, coffee, water, extra blankets, plenty of outlets for recharging gadgets) and the bathroom was a wonder and relief (immaculately clean and functional). The front desk staff dealt with us with unwarranted good humor! One of my travel companions handled paying our bill in about the most complicated way I can imagine — the woman at the desk smiled through the whole thing. We used their parking — it was secure and easy. The Red Lion is centrally located in Salisbury, so it was easy for us to walk to restaurants, the market, the Cathedral, etc. I would certainly stay again!

"My favorite hotel in Salisbury"

12/06/2017

Stayed eight nights in May 2017 at The Red Lion. My newly refurbished room (#22) was huge with an oversized king bed, fireplace, desk niche and full bathroom. As always, the service was great, especially Dawn at the front desk and David in the restaurant. After the second morning, David saw us come in for breakfast and ordered poached eggs for us. The food was very good, and bar service was excellent. My room was very quiet although could hear other guests walking past the door. We were able to walk to the bus stop, to the Cathedral, to the market and dozens of restaurants are within a block or two. Thoroughly enjoyed the visit.

William W, General Manager at Best Western Red Lion Hotel, responded to this review
Dear GoLondon, Thank you for your kind review. I am glad you found room 22 and the team welcoming on your break with us. I know both Dawn and David will be extremely proud to be mentioned for their service during your stay. "Charming, but with Issues"

11/06/2017

The Red Lion hotel is nicely situated in the middle of Salisbury, close to Market Square and perhaps 5-6 blocks from the magnificent Salisbury Cathedral. The hotel has an attractive lounge, complete with a fireplace and comfortable seating. It also has a beautiful courtyard, with 200-year-old vines over the entrance and around the periphery. Since the hotel's oldest section, the bar, is located right beside the courtyard, it is a very pleasant place to sip a glass of wine or ale and reflect peacefully at one of the wrought iron tables. And it serves a very nice full English buffet breakfast. Unfortunately, there are also some significant shortcomings, particularly when it gets hot. First, the place is a maze of corridors and small stairways. I had to mount seven stairways and make eleven turns with a bag to find my third floor room. I only discovered by chance that there was a lift (elevator) that could have made the climb much easier. The desk staff, while friendly, never mentioned the lift at check-in time. Second, it is not the most pleasant place to stay during hot weather. While the windows in some rooms (not all) open wide, the bedrooms retain daytime heat through much of the night. Also, the beds are topped only by a bottom sheet and a comforter, as is standard in most English hotels, unlike their American counterparts. Without air conditioning, however, guests have the apparent option of sweltering beneath the comforter or sleeping bare on top of the bottom sheet. I did ask for a top sheet on my second night there, and one was delivered to the room. I also discovered a rotating fan in the wardrobe. It would have been nice to learn about the fan from the desk staff, given the hot weather. Finally, the showers lacked adequate water pressure. While it was more than a trickle, one had to wash with just a weak flow of water that dropped directly from the shower head. I did get clean, but it took a few minutes longer than normal to do so. This hotel does occupy a perfect location in Salisbury, and that is a real advantage. It also has a beautiful courtyard and serves an excellent breakfast. However, the staff could make life much easier for guests by informing them about the lift, mentioning the rotating fan, and offering the top sheet option for cooler sleeping at their arrival outset. The water pressure is a separate, mechanical issue that should be addressed. This is an attractive hotel in a great location. Without these problems being addressed, however, I would be hesitant to stay there again, especially in warmer weather.

Dear Ashburn1, Thank you for your review of the Red Lion. I would like to apologize your visit did not fully meet your expectations. I greatly appreciate your comments regarding the information our reception team relays at check-in especially the supply of fans in all of our bedrooms and the directions the team gives. I can only apologize as the team will normally try and give the shortest route to the bedroom which may not include the elevator. Again, please accept our apologies. Once again, I would like to thank you and I do hope you will stop by again in the future to see all the improvements we are constantly undertaking. Sincerely, William Weis General Manager

The main building was fascinating and classic looking. There was nowhere to park. But it sort of shocked us when we realized that it was a genuine wattle and daub building from the long long ago. The room wasn't especially impressive, but when my husband expressed dissatisfaction with the typical European hotel room things (limited toiletries, a sham and no top sheet for the bed, no elevator, no help to get our suitcases upstairs, no washcloths) the staff went out of their way to help us be satisfied, brought us sheets, extra towels, anything they could think of to improve our experience. We had no problem with noise but other rooms seemed to have issues. And the atmosphere was great, loved the courtyard (nice weather, of course.) Watch out if you happen to be allergic to Virginia creeper, because they've got lots of it and it is very irritating to many people, like poison ivy.

"Historic Inn in the centre of Salisbury, UK"

Lots of character indeed in this historic hotel in the centre of Salisbury. We stayed overnight only, on our way to a short holiday in Cornwall. Our room was near the end of several winding corridors and appeared to have been refurbished recently. It was very comfortable and perfectly quiet. Both dinner and breakfast were fine, with plenty of good choices. Staff were friendly and helpful. The secure parking may not be cheap but was well worthwhile, allowing us to wander around town (shops, market, cathedral, Magna Carta) at our leisure in the afternoon and again in the morning before departure.

William W, General Manager at Best Western Red Lion Hotel, responded to this review

I am glad we had reserved one of the few parking spaces, I think for £15 for the night, as parking would have been tricky other wise. The receptionist was lovely but our room was small and pokey, down a corridor or three to get to it. The view out of the window was not a view at all, just roof tiles and the company of a white dove the following morning. Our neighbour had their TV on quite loudly, and their sash window was at right angles to ours so it was a loud evening and, rather annoyingly, snoring to be heard during the night. The bed was comfy and the bathroom was clean. We were rather rudely awoken by the fire alarm but by the time we were up and decent it had gone off again, so breakfast was earlier than anticipated. There was no apology or 'how was your night?' at check out - we have had refunds for less at other hotels. The buffet breakfast was above average - a good choice if you got there early enough to have full baskets of pastries or full plates of cold meat & cheese. Sadly, we were a bit late for either. The courtyard was definitely the best feature and was a lovely setting for a coffee before heading off. Not sure I'd stay here again; ok for a quick stop-over and a good location for the city centre, but our room was not one to hang around in.

We were planing to visit Stonehenge and decided to search for a hotel for the weekend. We called to book a Family room that seamed available on line, we wanted to know if there were 4 or 5 beds. The counterpart said he/she was a trainee and will come back with an answer which he/she did not do and the room was booked by someone else. We had to settle for connecting room that the receptionist was willing to rearrange other guests to accommodate our need for 2 connecting double rooms overlooking the court The other double Room 37 was spacious and nice although on the street which was quiet until the club next door opened at night but the window eliminated most of the noise. Staying at the court in the evening was very pleasant. It has a pleasant ambiance and the plates we ordered were very tasty specially the Tuna and Potatoes. We opted to stay for the evening and we enjoyed the ambiance, the weather and the food+Service. Breakfast was diverse and well presented and hot. We did not notice that we spent 2 hours having our meal as the set-up was pleasant. I will definitely recommend it for every friend who would consider going to Stonehenge.

"Lots of character in the main building but over priced and disappointing bedroom"

My partner and I stayed at the Red Lion for two nights in a standard room. The location is great and the building has a lot of character and charm. On arrival we were allocated room 19, the room was OK if a little dated however, had little resemblance to any images shown on the website, which we learnt are of the superior rooms or suites, it would be good to make this clear. Unfortunately the bathroom was really unpleasant and dated, the shower was particularly unsatisfactory with mouldy sealant and grouting that made it feel very dirty. After speaking to the front desk, we were moved to the room next door, number 20. This was much better in terms of the bathroom however aspects of the decor were very dated with 80s style curtains and bathroom (thankfully no mould though). The view was also disappointing as it looked out to a wall and roof. We also found it noisy, clearly hearing what the people next door were watching on the TV as well as others late night conversations. On a positive note, the original walls on display was a nice touch to show the history of the building. Overall we felt the room was over priced and said to each other "we're going to be out the whole time and will only be sleeping here" I'm sure that's not the ideal customer quote but it was accurate. Sadly no one asked us if we had enjoyed our stay when we checked out so didn't get an opportunity to flag our views up in person.

Stayed here 27th May 2017 for just one night as we were attending a family birthday party in town. The only positive thing I can say is that the bed was super comfy. The receptionist on the Saturday evening when we booked in had no personality at all, she had no interest in the conversation that we were trying to have with her, and the bar attendant wasn't much better. He did ask us where we'd been when we said we'd just got off a flight from a 3wk holiday, but spoke in almost a whisper. We had to park the car in Brown St car park, which admittedly was free between 6pm & 10am, but then we had to walk back to the Hotel with all our luggage, including Fancy Dress costumes. When we returned from our party we realised there is a Nightclub next door to the Hotel and we had to endure squealing women, foul mouthed men, vibrating deep base music & smoke wafting into our room window until gone 4am. We paid £136.80 for the room & extra for breakfast, but after getting less than 3hrs sleep we cancelled breakfast and made our way back home to Bournemouth. The morning receptionist apologised for our lack of sleep and asked for our email address and phone number so that she could pass it on to the Manager. To top it off when we returned to our car in the morning some fool had thought it would be funny to put their chips on our windscreen. I know this is not the fault of the Hotel, I accept that. But in our room the shower cubicle was dirty, mildew all along the cubicle door, and even the net curtain at the window was hanging down, the wire keeping it up was not the correct width, causing it to sag. Not a room worth £136.80 in my book. Fortunately, we now know of the disturbances of a Saturday night from the Nightclub and so will not be staying here again, or recommending it to friends either, sorry

Had a lovely stay here for 4 days after I was checked into another hotel and it was horrendous I was dubious at first but it was beautiful the rooms have so much character the 1220 bar And the food was lovely the only struggle was the heat obviously as no air con it was slightly unbareable but Overall was a pleasent stay now seriously considering this as our wedding venue will try and book to stay for a night not for work to try and ecperience it from a Lesiure point of view and potential wedding venue

Comfort, history, good food and fantastic atmosphere at the Salisbury Red Lion Hotel on Milford St. The 13th century coaching inn has an ideal location practically across the street from the market square, five minute walk to Salisbury Catherdral and 10 minute walk to the train station. Throughly enjoyed an 8 night stay at this great English inn.

I recently visited this hotel with a friend for afternoon tea. It is very conveniently placed for the shopping centre and market, and the tea is excellent value and nicely served for a very reasonable price. We had sandwiches, miniature quiches, scones, jam, cream and a selection of cakes and biscuits, plus a miniature pannacotta per person. All this was elegantly served, and I cannot fault it.

The Red Lion is a great base for Salisbury. Located close to the historic medieval city centre and Cathedral. The rooms are ample, clean and comfortable. The hotel is full of character and has a wonderful courtyard, ideal for lunch or a drink. The staff were most helpful and keen to please. Breakfast is buffet style. The hotel has limited parking spaces and I preferred to use Brown Street car park a 2 minute walk away.

I chose the hotel because it was so old. I was grateful though for the lift to our room which I knew beforehand was refurbished in a modern style. Sadly though as in the case of so many hotel rooms it wasn't that comfortable. The lounge was very comfortable with real fires, high back chairs and sofas, unfortunately the service was poor; we ordered drinks, I was parched after being on the road for three and a half hours but when they did not arrive I went to get them myself from the bar only to find the member of staff was serving other guests. We had a delicious meal in the award winning restaurant but the ambience was ruined as small children were allowed to run around and be as noisy as they pleased while the parents ignored them..... as did the staff. We had a few issues during our stay which were not dealt with to any form of satisfaction.

William W, General Manager at Best Western Red Lion Hotel, responded to this review
Dear Donald L, Thank you for taking the time to post your review. I would like to extend my personal apologies your stay did not fully meet your expectations. "A restaurant in a prime location - Salisbury"

30/04/2017

We visited for Saturday lunch for my Mother's 90th birthday. A brilliant location, good venue, reasonable food but service was a struggle - but they did try hard. But with only 2 people looking after us the service was slow and the food only warm - I don't like being negative and would revisit to see if they can cater for fewer people. The logistics of serving large volumes of people all at once really need a review and improvement. I do recommend this restaurant but quality service might be a struggle,

"Look else where."

Has old world character, but the rooms are poor value, the upper rooms (no lifts) have unsafe stairs and handrails. There was an arrogant attitude from some staff. Limited car parking which you have to pay extra for, or park in a public open carpark.

24/04/2017

We enjoyed our stay. I was rather hoping to be transported back to the 13th century which was why I chose this hotel, but sadly, once past the lovely ancient entrance and courtyard, the rest of the hotel, including our room, was relatively modern ( probably understandably due to fire regs etc, but more charm and character would've been nice) The receptionist was charming, (if a little overworked with the phone ringing off the hook) and she was kindly able to cancel our dinner booking in order to swap it for breakfast. The room was clean and tidy, but the whole hotel was really too hot throughout. (Heating bill must be horrific!) Fan in the bathroom droned on all night (reported). As a bit of an energy conservationist (sad, I know) I saw that all of the dozens of ceiling bulbs in the dining room were halogens, which apart from adding to the overbearing heat are also hugely expensive to run by today's standards. This hotel could save a fortune in energy cutbacks! Breakfast was very average for the money. Overall a very pleasant stay beautiful day in an excellent part of town. Sadly, there was no parking space available, but there is a municipal car park very nearby.

23/04/2017

We decided to eat here because the hotel we were staying at didn't seem to cater for evening meals. We were warmly welcomed by the waiting staff and were led to a table in beautiful surroundings. The building is gorgeous and so was the food we were served. I thought it was extra special without being pompus or overpriced. I would urge anyone who would like somewhere special to eat whilst they are in Salisbury, to try The Red Lion. They will be looked after and fed beautufully.

Absolutely wonderful! The hotel is perfectly situated in the centre - few minutes walk to the cathedral and the tourist office (recommend the City Walk) The town has a great variety of restaurants, bars and lovely shops (and hosts a market twice a week Tues n Sat) The Red Lion afternoon tea was amazing - breakfast first class! staff friendly and service excellent. Beautiful courtyard - will defo be back!

22/04/2017

Great central location in town. We we were able to walk to different restaurants and the Cathedral and nothing was too far away. We pre-booked a taxi to take us to Stonehenge for our early morning special access tour, but we noticed that there is a line of taxis just across the street, so we could have taken one of those without pre-booking one. This was convenient for our departure date when we needed a taxi to the train station. The room we stayed in was on the small side, but it was nicely updated and the bathroom was modernized. It was a comfortable stay, and the staff were very helpful and friendly. It was also cool to say that we stayed at the oldest purpose-built hotel in the country.

"Fantastic 13th Century Hotel"

21/04/2017

Very warm welcome to this special hotel. Parking is available on site - but only a few places and £15 per night - this is definitely worth booking in advance because public car parks are about £8 a day and you have the benefit of easy access and unloading. Our room on the first floor was characterful, with oak beams in the ceiling and walls, and an amazing wooden bed head dedicated to the Alen and Apis le Vein families. Parts of the walls were exposed under glass to show original medieval decoration and plaster work. The bar and restaurant are well appointed. We liked the space in the public areas and the courtyard would be a great place to have a drink and relax in warm weather - you can completely imagine the arrival of coach and horses and the bustle of the centuries. The hotel is very close to the Market Square, restaurants and the shops and the Cathedral is only about 10 minutes walk - the perfect place to capture an authentic experience of Salisbury which is a pearl of an English city.

19/04/2017

We stayed 2 nights over Easter 2017, we had breakfast both days which is £8.99 for as much as you like. We had dinner on one night which was convenient as we were tired and is at a reduced rate of £15 something. Dinner was ok not great. It seems understaffed as service was slow at the bar. There's a fabulous real fire in the lounge with a carved wood antique surround. It was very relaxing to sit in the lounge. The building is 12th century black & white with nooks & crannies to explore and a lovely courtyard for sitting. They have limited parking for £12 a day and there's a public car park round the back.

"Bar staff"

2
19/04/2017

The bar staff are very slow and just walk a way and leave the bar with no one to serve customers it was are first and last time there I was waiting to be served in the end had to go the reception to ask to be served not good as the service we got was very poor bar person didn't even listen to what you oerdered properly and the prices were very expensive

"A good meeting place "

17/04/2017

We met up with friends here, as the hotel is a very good place to be able to sit and talk, in the bar or the lounge. The bedroom was comfortable and clean, the staff were helpful and the meals we had were good. The menu gave a very good choice. It is situated in a good place to be able to wander into Salisbury.

"Great Hotel"

14/04/2017

Just spent a most enjoyable night at the Red Lion in Salisbury. From walking into the very impressive courtyard at the start of our visit, to leaving the next morning everything was first rate. The staff are very polite and professional, the breakfast was one of the best that my wife and I have had, everything served was fresh and very well selected and cooked. Parking is a slight concern as it is either paying £15 to park in the hotel or it is free in a nearby car park from 6 on an evening until 8 in the morning, this meant having to get up early to put money in the meter at 8, this is far from ideal, you would have thought there would be some arrangement where residents could get a free couple of hours in the morning or you paid a small fee to get parking until 10? This would only add positively to your stay, something to think about?

"Possibly the best scones"

5
11/04/2017

That is definitely a little gem of a hotel. We did come here twice for some tea and desserts. Must say the hotel has a lovely courtyard garden with tables that is hardly found in London for example. Very relaxing, listening to the birds and looking at the scenery around you. Staff was friendly and efficient. We loved the scones, a stand out - so far the best we have tried. Fresh and soooo delicious! Would go back without thinking twice, thank you.

"A pleasant lunch !"

4
11/04/2017

Visited the bar/restaurant in this delightful old hotel for lunch with my partner, daughter-in-law and her 18 month old daughter. We had a variety of freshly cooked main meals including a "fully loaded" burger, fish and chips and pork belly. The staff were very helpful and friendly and made sure the toddler was well looked after throughout our meal. Great central location in a lovely, historical town.

"Lovely old hotel"

10/04/2017

Old but well kept. Friendly staff and rooms with character. Very enjoyable stay. Breakfast very nice and good value. I would recommend staying here. The rooms over the courtyard are lovely and quiet. Will be back.

"Afternoon tea"

10/04/2017

I took my Mum for afternoon tea on Saturday and we were both pleasantly surprised! The Red Lion Hotel holds lots of olde worlds charm, very pleasant warm welcome and friendly staff. Our afternoon tea was of excellent quality, home cooked cakes and pot of tea nice and hot! I would recommend this Hotel for afternoon tea and it's quaint courtyard setting!

"Weekend stay for wedding"

2
07/04/2017

I arrived on a Friday afternoon for a wedding in Salisbury on the Saturday as I wanted to be on the spot and relaxed rather than having to travel from London on the Saturday morning. While I appreciate that the old part of the building is 13th century and the floor is very uneven does this really mean that the bed has to be uneven and lumpy as well? I had the most appalling night's sleep as I couldn't get comfortable at all. At about 1.00 am I tried to ring down to reception to see if there was another room free but my room telephone did not work. In the morning when I went to have a shower the whole shower fitting fell away in my hand and tumbled into the bath. (There was clearly no way the shower had been working before I touched it.) The fluorescent light above the sink was broken and it was not clear how the heater in the bedroom worked, i.e. no instructions, so the room was cold. I was shown two other rooms on the Saturday night but as far as I could tell the beds looked equally uncomfortable. Needless to say I will not be staying at this hotel again and would not recommend it to anyone. This was not the experience I expected from a Best Western Hotel and while I was given a 10% discount I felt I should have been more generously recompensed for my discomfort.

"Overnight stay"

4
26/11/2016

Stayed in the annexe not the main building which was a shame, room a good size modern and comfortable. However was kept awake until 1.00 am from traffic and revellers as the annexed rooms adjoin a busy road. Parking was a problem as there is no car park and the public free overnight car park was full. Had dinner here and although the food was good and cost reasonable there was only one other couple eating so ambiance not great, service was excellent!

This hotel is well located in the city centre. It claims to be 13th century, in part. Booking was straightforward and the service efficient and courteous. The room was clean and quiet, comfortable. Would use this hotel again.

15/11/2016

my husband and I have been the Red Lion for a long weekend away , it was lovely !! loved the colours of the autumn when you enter the court yard , the staff very friendly and the food was exquisite! very nice breakfast too . the only thing I would say is plan ahead your car parking , only 6 places (£15 a day ) in the hotel , after that its an over ground car park 2 mns walk away or a multi storey car park free after 3 pm on the Saturday / free Sunday - however 5mns walk away . Also watch out the measure of your drink especially if you ask for a double spirit - we had to point out that they were serving single for the price of a double ( cheeky ) Other than that it was very nice stay , the room very spacious , big bathroom and very quiet . We loved the ambiance atmosphere - will go there again .

"Good for the price"

15/11/2016

I've stayed here for two weekends now. The rooms are large and the beds comfortable. The showers work well, that is, you don't need to run around in it to get wet and the water is hot. The bar is a little basic but they serve a good range of beers. I'm not sure the breakfast is £20 worth, but you can help yourself, so I guess you could take as much as you want. The hotel is right in the heart of the city, so there are plenty of places around to give you a choice of foods. There is very limited on site parking, and a car park right behind the hotel which is free between 6pm and 8am and only £1.40 for an hour. If you pay after 6pm, it just adds that time to the morning, so you don need to get up at 8am and move the car! Nice little place. Would stay again.

"I LOVE this hotel"

13/11/2016

We looked at many venues in Salisbury and believe that the Red Lion is by far and away the best. Everything went beautifully and all the people who attended our conferences were very pleased with everything. There is some noise in the rooms that face the main road when the bars close, be sure to ask for an interior room.

"Nice place - car park tricky and room key dodgy but lovely"

4
07/11/2016

I enjoyed my stay at the Red Lion. It is central and it is very comfortable. There are lots of nice places to eat and drink on the doorstep. I would recommend it. One heads-up for travellers - you really do need to book the parking as the car park is tiny. I had a lot of trouble getting my vehicle in (it's really big - my fault maybe! - but it was difficult to get into the space). Also the room key needed reprogramming twice a day so do take care with keeping the key in some sort of quarantine from anything that might corrupt it (maybe new cards would help, Best Western?).

03/11/2016

Its a nice hotel, some of the rooms are tired, some a bit plain and some really good, but all clean. The breakfasts are great, room service efficient. We stay there when visiting the local theater. Rooms overlooking the courtyard are the quietest. The place needs work on the rooms, which looked to be in progress when we last stayed as it's not quite as good as they think or as good as they charge for.

"An Absolute Pleasure to Stay Here!"

02/11/2016

From the moment we checked in up to the moment we checked out, this charming hotel caught our group's heart. The reception was efficient and pleasant, the room was amazing, the ambiance of the bar and fireplace area are not to be missed, and you wake refreshed to a fantastic hot English Breakfast! Thank you, especially goes out to the general manager Mark Bramley and to Hany Gambil . Each in their own way they made us feel welcome. Our Business Group, The Boshemian Club, looks forward to our return to this historic and magnificent hotel.

"Good, comfortable night"

4
02/11/2016

Comfortable room with essential facilities but nothing extra. Our room overlooked the road at the rear of the hotel and was a bit noisy during the early night hours. Bathroom uptodate and clean. Breakfast was a good buffet and I particularly liked being able to order eggs freshly cooked. This is an olde worlde hotel with lots of quirky features and rooms leading off rooms like a rabbit warren. Some of the communal areas are a little tired and carpets stained but otherwise good with friendly service. Our only issue was car parking - we booked this hotel because we believed it had its own car park but this turned out to be a public car park down the road - at least we did not have to pay as the machine was broken! Admire the wonderful virginia creeper hanging everywhere in the inner courtyard - fabulous colour in October!

"Failed in all respects"

1
26/10/2016

On arrival the room was cold and I attempted to turn on the storage radiator. I tried all the switches including the plug but nothing appeared to work as the 'on' light never lit. I assumed that the radiator was on a timer and left to meet a colleague for dinner. On return the room was still cold but I had managed to switch on the towel rail in the bathroom which at least made that room bearable. However, the next morning the shower eventually produced some hot water and just as I'd managed to get covered in shampoo and shower gel the water stopped flowing. I tried several times to get the shower to work but eventually resorted to running a very slow bath. In addition the shower curtain was too short which meant a lot of water ended up on the floor, and the bath mat was filthy. On complaining to the receptionist on leaving I was told that the radiator did work but that the plug was wired the wrong way and the light didn't work! Why wasn't I made aware of this? I received a shrug and 'sorry'. I asked for a feedback form but as none were available I have resorted to this review and a similar one to Best Western. I don't expect much from a hotel room, but I do expect the room to be warm and clean and the shower to work. This hotel failed in these basics.

"Great Long Weekend"

5
25/10/2016

We had a very comfortable room overlooking one of the courtyards for three nights. The buffet breakfast was extensive and kept fresh. We had two evening meals which were excellent - one in the main restaurant and the other in the lounge bar. The menus is both were wide enough to provide anyone with a good series of choices. The meals were excellently cooked and set out, and served well. Staff were friendly and very helpful.

"Slow check in "

3
23/10/2016

We booked via Salisbury information centre and then went straight to the hotel, we had our copy of the booking but the man a the desk said they had no confirmation of the booking and we would have to wait until it came through. This went on for about an hour then he went off and a girl took his place, so I asked again if they had our confirmation so she looked at the emails and said yes it's been sitting here for over an hour. The room was okay but expensive £125 b& b. Same chain cheaper in London.

"Friendly staff but too noisy to sleep."

2
17/10/2016

The outside of the hotel and the reception area raised expectations that made the quality of the room even more disappointing. I stayed in a single room and the room looked as if it hadn't been changed in any way in the last thirty years or so. The bed had a noticeable dip in it and the walls had stains on them. The shower was good but the sink grubby. The hotel is a city centre location so I expected some noise, especially as I stayed on a Saturday night but what I wasn't prepared for was continuous, excessive, aggressive noise that made sleep impossible. My room faced the street and as I found out, the smoking area of a nightclub opposite and the drunken screaming, arguments, swearing and racist abuse ( directed at the bouncers who were trying to keep order) didn't finally stop altogether until four in the morning. I felt very sorry for the receptionist who was polite and apologetic but looked as if she had heard it many times before when I complained the next morning. If they are going to sell this room for sleeping in they need more than single glazing or they should make customers aware before they book. The building opposite was also a hotel so i had no idea that it would be so noisy for so long.

"Road Trip Overnight"

4
29/09/2016

We were on a three day road trip out of Tunbridge Wells and selected this hotel for our stay on Salisbury. Dating back to the 13th Century this is a historic yet up to date hotel, perfectly located for touring the city. We also had dinner in the hotel restaurant since we were arriving late and did not want to wander about looking for food. Food was good as was the service. The prices for dining and hotel were very reasonable. Would highly recommend it.

"leisure break"

excellent stay will revisit if in the area friendly staff nothing too much trouble good food clean and comfortable in the centre of town close to cathedral and shops within easy reach of stonhenge theatres and shopping

"Family celebration"

3
25/09/2016

I had a single room at the top of two flights of stairs. It was small and practical. The decor was 'vintage', must have been last done in the early 1990's. The shower room was clean, and nothing a bit of bleach couldn't fix. I slept okay, although even with ear plugs, I could still hear the drunks outside the nightclub opposite fighting. Breakfast was not included in my booking but there are plenty of cafes nearby. I don't know if I would book again at this hotel.

"Excellent Hotel"

5
25/09/2016

We had a one night stop here we had two rooms booked one for me and my wife and the other for my mother-in-law, both rooms were excellent ours had original wooden beams. My wife and I went to the bar for a drink which was okay, we all also had an evening meal and the standard of the food and service was excellent. The breakfast was good with plenty of choice. Would definitely recommend to anybody that wanted to stay in Salisbury and it wasn't far to go and have a look around the shops.

"Good Meeting place"

4
24/09/2016

I stayed for 3 days in Salisbury and used the Red Lion to meet family and have lunch. The food was good, I had a tuna jacket potatoe and other family members had sandwiches. Both dishes were plentiful and good value for money. The courtyard is a lovely place to sit, but more comfortable seating and more practical tables would be appreciated.

"Central areas ok but rooms very dated "

3
21/09/2016

The hotel was ok, the staff were friendly, the breakfast was quite good, the central areas were more recently decorated but the room and bathroom was very dated with one damp and peeling wall. The hotel is quite centrally located but parking wasn't easy! I definitely wouldn't rush back!

"800 years old, but very comfortable!"

5
19/09/2016

Meals and service were great! The history of the inn is intertwined with the building of Salisbury Cathedral, and the hotel manager is an enthusiastic steward of the ancient parts of the hotel. The charming stone courtyard walls are covered with ancient vines. I had a delightful 3-day stay.

"Tongue twizzling tea!"

5
19/09/2016

I had afternoon tea with my friend and we had some finger sandwiches along with a wide range of cakes and biscuits with unlimited tea and coffee!! We spent a couple of hours whiling away the time in this historic building. The staff were friendly, welcoming and helpful.

"Lots of character, good food and excellent service"

5
18/09/2016

We have just come back from a two night stay here The Hotel has so much character and an interesting account of it's long history is available in each bedroom. Situated right in the centre of Salisbury but our room was amazingly quiet at night. We were lucky to have the Seamstress Suite which is a superb room. Spacious, luxurious, air-conditioned and very well equipped. It looked down on the central courtyard which is pretty. From one window we could see the spire of Salisbury Cathedral across the roof-tops and the other window gave a view of St Thomas's clock tower. The room was very quiet for a centre of town hotel. Through out the hotel the service was extremely good and all the staff we came across were friendly and very helpful. Breakfast and dinner were taken in the Vine Restaurant. Breakfast is buffet style continental and full English whilst dinner is a la carte. Both food and service were excellent. A very enjoyable stay in a hotel I would thoroughly recommend.

"Lovely way to spend an afternoon."

4
18/09/2016

We went here for afternoon tea and thoroughly enjoyed being spoilt. We had a selection of sandwiches and cakes and the hotel staff had catered for a lactose intolerant diet too. It is a wonderful 13th century hotel with a courtyard full of plants. Would definitely recommend it.

"The building is old , but the service is good ."

4
10/09/2016

At the reception and restaurant , was please to support comfortably . I think that it is accommodation expenses . It is a little high , but there is on-site parking . Blood sausage is very delicious , was remaining in the impression .

"Magic place! "

5
09/09/2016

What a beautiful hotel! It has a manic little beer garden and a cosy restaurant. It has a Skeleton clock which was built from old ship timbers. Well worth going to check it out. The food in the Restaurant is delicious and very well priced. The whole place is charming. I highly recommend it. I had a beautiful Summer Berry Pudding for dessert there!!!!

"Atmospheric and centrally located"

4
08/09/2016

The hotel is full of historical details and is slap bang in the middle of Salisbury, a short walk from the cathedral and only 15 minutes walk from the station is you do not have too much luggage. The rooms were large and well-appointed, and I was grateful for the table-top fan provided as it was very warm during my stay. However, the key-card I was given for the room did not work, even after I had gone all the way back to the reception to get it revalidated, Eventually, the receptionist came up with me with a new card and I finally got into my room. The free WIFI worked well in my room, but apparently not in some of the other parts of the hotel (I was part of a group staying there). Breakfast was plentiful and included varied options, although none of them were very inspiring. The water pressure in the shower was the most disappointing feature of the room, emerging at barely a dribble. I was not that impressed with dinner in the restaurant either but will review that separately

"wonderful hotel with very pleasant courtyard"

4
04/09/2016

Possibly the room and bathroom were perhaps as standard as would be expected.. after all there's only so much can be done with most rooms, beds comfy, very clean rooms... but what I liked the most was the very pleasant sheltered courtyard outside the reception and bar (bar good prices :-)... fine décor bar restaurant, recep and lounges all made this a pleasant stay. very central too. If parking, they do charge extra for the few limited parking spaces, but the council car park behind is reasonable (and free overnight until 8am)

"Central Stay in Salisbury"

4
04/09/2016

The Red Lion in Salisbury is a very good central place to stay our room appeared to have been recently refurbished and was very comfortable. The staff were very friendly and helpful the only fault is that there are very few parking spaces but we were fortunate to have been able to reserve one for £15 a night.

"Do not have any functions here"

1
04/09/2016

My parents went to enquire about holding my 21st Birthday party here and were treated appallingly. Barman got the 'events manager' who promptly said they would not book in the party for a December weekend as he could 'get more money' from work Christmas parties so wouldn't allow them to book anything. Disgraceful behaviour, we have now taken our party of 90 people across to the Salisbury and South Wilts Sports Club, where we've been greeted very politely and promised a fantastic evening. Shame for the business that this 'events manager' deemed a party of 90 not worth reserving the night for.

"Great location and quaint hotel"

4
30/08/2016

The staff were polite but a little hard to locate at times. The hotel is ideally situated in the centre of Salisbury and the rooms were comfortable although extremely hot. The food was excellent. Getting to the room was confusing due to limited signs.

"Good lunch in their lovely court yard"

3
30/08/2016

The lunch was good-home made fish finger sandwiches. Lovely fresh bread, but could have had more fish. The court yard is a lovely little sun trap in nice weather. It's so peaceful you forget you're in the middle of a busy city! Very polite good service.

"Ok nothing special"

3
29/08/2016

Stayed here for one night never ate in restaurant so can't comment no bar staff had to go to reception to get someone to serve us and then very expensive £8 for glass of wine!! Room clean but on small side understand old historic building but room smelt sheets were still outside our door when checked in and next morning won't be back

"Visiting Great Dorset Steam Fair"

4
29/08/2016

Our fourth visit to this unique hotel, reputed to be the oldest purpose built hotel in Europe. We were given room 17, an executive room in the old part of the building complete with four poster bed, beautiful Victorian style bathroom, with separate bath and shower. Inside the room a feature has been made illustrating almost 800 years of decoration from original lathe and plaster through 16th century plaster to the modern day. Beautiful restaurant and lounge decorated in keeping with the age of the hotel. The hotel offers both continental and full English breakfast, bread selection slightly limited on the continental breakfast, but no complaints on the full English, all items well presented. Dinner menu adequate but not extensive, however the quality does not disappoint, sensibly priced wine list. As we were staying to visit the Great Dorset Steam Fair, highly recommended incidentally, we did not have the chance to sample morning coffe or afternoon tea. However on arrival we did enjoy a excellent bar lite lunch, again reasonably priced.

"Great Option for Afternoon Tea"

4
28/08/2016

My daughter and I were disappointed that we didn't get a chance to have high tea in London during the first part of our trip. I'm so glad I found some recommendations for the Victoria Lounge at the red lion hotel. The waiter was very attentive and yet we didn't feel rushed. My daughter and I chose the sweets and chose to forgo the savory. It came to $22 pounds. The atmosphere of the hotel is worth the trip. The room is good but does need a bit of updating.

"Elegantly looked after."

5
24/08/2016

From start to finnish my stay here was smoothly delivered. Stayed due to work stay and was treated with top most proffesionalism.upon check in the reception staff were cheerful and bubbly whilst carrying out a first class service. Room was a single but had great coffee which helped out after my journey. Not the normal instant but also ground cafetiere in a bag. Room was big enough for myself to be comfortable. Asked for directions to cashpoint and was given pinpoint directions by another member of staff. Eats. Have you booked sir? Er no. Okay. Directed to a table and steak on its way. Lovely steak chips and grilled veg. The courtyard is a great place to take in the olde world ambience and you can see a spooky face eyeing you from the roof window!! A mystery to behold. Great place to stay the decor is old and you could spend a lot of time admiring the objects on display throughout.

"Should have joined the party in the street outside"

4
22/08/2016

Totally agree with all comments from other reviewers - comfortable room, excellent location, good friendly service, great courtyard etc etc, but stayed on a Saturday night and still awake at 3.30 am with the nightclub revellers outside, screaming and shouting. Be warned and take ear plugs if you get a room overlooking the street. No one has mentioned this. Would only stay here again in a room not overlooking the streets.

"Quirky place in Salisbury "

4
21/08/2016

A fantastic location in the middle of Salisbury, not far from the wonderful cathedral. We walked into the entrance of the courtyard and were surprised by how lovely the exterior of this old building was. The courtyard is a delightful place to sit and have a drink. The staff were professional and courteous. The building itself has many quirky features like an old carved clock, an 'Agatha Christie' style carpeted lift and a rabbit warren of corridors. The stay was an unexpected pleasure. Only down side is that it can be noisy outside at night, especially at pub closing time. I actually didn't realise that Salisbury was so lively. A good and unusual hotel with a nice, buffet style, varied breakfast. Rooms very comfortable.

"Good Situation"

3
21/08/2016

Had 2 night B & B stay last week. Breakfast was usual buffet standard but staff friendly and helpful, room appeared to have been recently refurbished, however hot water to the sink never got hot, although shower was fine!! Room overlooked street and was noisy from hotel opposite. Situation is great for walking round Salisbury. Council car parks are really close and much better value than hotel car park.

19/08/2016

We didn't stay here, but we spent a lot of time there as that was where the bride and groom was staying. The service is very good and friendly. The food is very nice as well and though we didn't stay there they treat us like we was. My only complaint was that the drinks were very expensive, but overall a lovely hotel and a lovely place to stay.

"Lovely hotel, but shower could do better"

4
17/08/2016

One of the better Best Westerns I have stayed in and in an ideal location in Salisbury. Can't really fault the quality of the room, the food or the service. My only gripe is that the shower was very under-powered and so it took an age to get ready. My colleague in another room had the same problem.

"Midweek stay"

17/08/2016

Booked a three night B&B stay last week. I think we paid for a superior room, but either way got no 85 on the second floor. Large bed and plenty of room for a sitting area. Shame that we didn't fancy sharing the one chair. I don't know what the problem was, but the room at night was incredibly hot. The radiator was off and Windows and curtains open. We then found that the duvet would have made an Eskimo happy,it was thicker than we use in winter. We sourced a sheet for the next nights and it was more bearable. Breakfast was poor, particularly the hot buffet. Noticeably it varied depending on how long it was sitting under the warmers. We had intended eating dinner in the restaurant on at least one night, but felt that if breakfast was not up to scratch, we would try elsewhere. Finally, the car park is small and very tight. At £15 it is twice the price of the council park approximately 100 yards away.

14/08/2016

Called in for lunch on Thurs 11th Aug 2016......... Absolutely delighted with our choice........we opted for the lunchtime menu ordered it at the bar & sat outside. My husband opted for the haddock & handcut chips, I had the chicken. Service was fantastic, food was superb.....the husband very appreciative of his haddock!!!! Obviously a very old building (dating back to c1220) Gen Manager very approachable and spent some time answering our queries about the history of the building. We will both put this on our list of places to return to...........

"2 nights on business"

12/08/2016

Stayed for 2 nights mid week. Hotel is very central with an attractive courtyard and lots of quirky features. The downside was that my bedroom was very noisy from street noise which included delivery vans through the night and refuge collection at 5.30 am. I didn't eat in the restaurant apart from breakfast.I had a help yourself buffet on my first morning and had planned to order from the menu on my 2nd (more relaxed) morning. Unfortunately when I tried to do so I was told it was unavailable as they had run out of the necessary items - no apology for this.

A perfect place for an extended stay. Very friendly staff and good food. Our room was modern and clean with en-suite services. Comfortable sleeping. We were far out on the end of the wind, and the wifi was weak, but mostly workable. Parking is very tight. Be sure and request a spot when you book. There is a nearby public car park.

I accompanied my wife on a business trip to Salisbury and we stayed at this hotel, where my wife has stayed several times previously. We were allocated our room in the old part of the hotel and were absolutely amazed to find out that we had been upgraded to a feature room, with a four poster bed, a massive bathroom and separate dressing area. The features of the room were quirky and interesting and the bed was really comfortable. The hotel is very centrally situated, but where we were placed, we heard no noise from the main street. breakfast was excellent. The staff were helpful and attentive.Overall, this was an excellent overnight stay and we may return for a longer stay.

Booked late on line and when we arrived at 8.30pm to our delight we had been upgraded. Great room with four poster in the old part of the hotel. Lovely full English breakfast. Great central location. Only drawback is limited on site parking.

Two of us called into The Red Lion mid afternoon as we had not eaten. We both enjoyed a Jacket Potato with Brie, Bacon and Cranberries with a side salad and coleslaw. This was served quite quickly and with our drinks it was a really nice experience.

"Excellent all-round hotel."

05/08/2016

Great staff who are friendly, hepful and professional, lovely historic inn and courtyard, central location handy for all of rest of city, comfortable, clean room and delicious breakfasts. The corridors are a little creaky, but that is to be expected in a building with a structure this old. The odd person returned to their rooms at a late hour in a sozzled state, inconsiderately closing their doors loudly, but it wasn't a big problem and it is not the hotel's fault. (I had been warned by a local that it could be loud and rowdy in that part of the city late at night, but I was near to the front of the building and on this side, it was barely audible.)

"A pleasant experience"

The Red Lion is an amazing place to stay. We stayed there for a night during a trip to the UK in July 2014. Nice clean rooms with all the basic necessities. Reasonably priced and central to Salisbury. The hotel has good amenities however we ate dinner across the road due to the expensive menu at the Red Lion. Friendly staff and lots of history. If I am correct the oldest pub in UK. We would return.

"Not for Light Sleepers"

3
26/07/2016

This hotel has many features to recommend it, central location, beautiful courtyard and rooms with character. However the major drawback is the noise from the street. We had Room 91, on a corner at back of the hotel. For whatever reason this is above an area where the botched and bungled of the town seem to congregate in the early hours of the morning, making sleep impossible. Over a two night stay I managed about 4 hours sleep. The drinks at the hotel are pricey for the area and the bar staff are rude bordering on ignorant. Food looked ok but we did not eat here due to the poor service. Parking is limited and expensive.

Well.. I loved the hotel on sight ,friendly staff, (thank you Laura and Nicki on reception) when i arrived, the Room was amazing,I had the Seamstress room. I had a lovely Chicken dish in the evening, (Please next time, can i have it on a plate not a bowl) Sadly I went to order a glass of wine from my room and the Telephone was not working, so I had to treck down to reception....then i wanted to use the bath,(the soul reason for booking this room)...and only scorching hot water was coming out, so...due to the phone being out .I had to get dressed and trapes back down to reception to let them know about the bath, which i couldn't use,so i had a shower, when i got to get out,the door fell on me !!! Well that was the 3 i guess!!! Don't get me wrong I loved it here Good food and friendly staff, I hope they have managed to sort these glitches out,Sadly they all happened all at once ,on my stay! The staff did discount my stay, which was appreciated, but to have got a discount I would have been Happy with The Manager would have had to authorise this.

We popped in here for lunch with my parents whilst shopping in Salisbury. The service was excellent and the menu varied. There wasn't room outside to sit in the courtyard so we sat inside. We had a sandwich each and some drinks and it was lovely. Would certainly return!

15/07/2016

Stayed here during a short visit to Salisbury attractions. Our room was a lovely two room suite, very relaxing. Staff was quite helpful and welcoming, pointing us to various options for dinner and touring in Salisbury. Lounge area with fireplace is very comfortable for late night cocktail or morning coffee. Had dinner one night in the bar while watching soccer. Duck appetizer and fish and chips were best we've had during two week tour of UK. Parking garage is a bit tight and challenging to maneuver- A man waiting for our spot got out of his car when we saw my husband having trouble backing out and offered to take our car out to the street for us. Turns out he was the owner- very nice!!!

"A very enjoyable stay"

We can not fault the hotel. The room was very clean and comfortable. We enjoyed a lovely breakfast and the staff were all very pleasant. We only had one problem trying to obtain coffee from the bar late in the evening but we got our coffee and an apology!

"Lovely historic hotel"

12/07/2016

I stayed here with students for one night as we were visiting Stonehenge. Quirky room setup with different staircases but really lovely room with seeming brand new bathrooms. The court yard garden is a great place to sit in for coffee or tea. The 1220 bar had great food. Wished they served past 9:30 but Salisbury shuts down early! Highly recommend this hotel and I apologize to anyone whom my students may have disturbed. I will be sure not to let that happen again when we return. Staff was gracious and lovely.

"Absolutely fine, but needs updating?"

06/07/2016

The welcome was good and helpful. Hotel easy to find. Reception informative and welcoming. The room was spacious, clean and in good order. However, the whole floor of the hotel was very hot, even though it had not been a boiling summer's day. The room was stifling, but when the windows were propped open, the noise of the street was very loud and disturbed my sleep. There was no fan, and no air-conditioning. In the morning at reception when I mentioned this, I was told there was a fan in the cupboard. Unfortunately the shower was also very low - I'm 6'2", I think it could only be properly usable by someone 5'6" or less. The water pressure was very poor too. What otherwise could have been a great stay was let down by these two factors, and when spending £100 for a night, you expect to have at least a shower you don't have to bend down to use! Otherwise staff were welcoming and friendly, and the hotel is in a great location.

"Lovely hotel."

03/07/2016

Stayed here for the past two weeks for work purposes. Reception staff are ever so helpful and lovely. The whole process of checking in and out was very quick. The rooms were very clean, room was made up everyday and with tea and coffee amenities topped up too. The bed was very comfy, the only downfall is if your a light sleeper and staying at the front of the hotel- the custom from other bars/pubs kicking out at 1-2am can be a bit noisy. Overall great hotel and location. Would definitely recommend to others.

"Great city centre location"

5
27/06/2016

Large well decorated rooms in old coaching inn right in the heart of Salisbury. Period bathroom with freestanding bath and oversize shower. Good choice for breakfast which was included in the room rate. Only down side was lack of on-site parking.

"Beautiful hotel"

27/06/2016

The hotel is stunning, courtyard is so lovely to have a drink in, wouldn't believe it's in a city centre. Had a room in the old part of the hotel, room was lovely and big, big bed and very comfortable. Room was very hot but there was a fan in the wardrobe. Only downside of the room was the shower, it was on bath with a shower curtain which I detest and you couldn't adjust the height of the shower head. Service left a lot to be desired, reception was fantastic but we had a late drink in the bar, completely ignored by the man running it for ages, no apology or I'll be with you in a minute. At breakfast we had to wait to be seated as again no one around, breakfast itself was fantastic. We sat in the conservatory, buffet style with a lot of choices but you order your eggs, waited absolutely ages for those and it wasn't busy at all. Overall it was really very good but with a bit of staff training it could be amazing.

"Afternoon tea"

Had a very nice afternoon tea here this Sunday afternoon with my husband. Good service & very nice selection on 3 tier cake holder! Also went here for our Christmas Day lunch which was also very nice too! Nice olde worlde surroundings! Nice staff etc

"Fine place to stay"

4
22/06/2016

Staff were very kind, room was clean attractive and very comfortable, courtyard and exterior were pretty. We came in late and left early so we didn't have a chance to check out amenities like the on site bar and restaurant, but the breakfast seemed very expensive. We had to grab a snack supper and breakfast from the Tesco an easy walk away away and open until midnight, so we could get going on our tour with Vic's Taxi in the morning (highly recommend!). I would definitely return to this hotel unless I could find something comparable for less money.

"Comfy & very convenient!"

5
22/06/2016

We needed an hotel in Salisbury city centre for one Saturday night, convenient to a wedding party at another hotel. This was very well placed for our need, plus excellent for whizzing around the immediate sights whilst killing time! Comfy & quirky room...carved headboard including battle axe amazing!! Tasty & plentiful breakfast. Attentive & polite staff. Peaceful nights sleep.

"Weekend away"

19/06/2016

Booked that hotel for bank holiday weekend. I though it is a nice place to stay but I was wrong. Good location and small own car park, nice decor of the room however no air condition, very very poor water pressure in the shower. In the room was like in sauna. Room was clean, breakfast ok. Did not felt welcome. I was sick all week after staying there. Would not recommend anyone to stay there during summer period. Awful experience, rooms are overpriced and reception told me that owner doesn't care!!!

"Good Locatioin"

16/06/2016

This is a great hotel for exploring Salisbury and surrounding areas. Although no carpark, there is one right next door and if you are out and about during the day there is no charge after 18.00 until 08.00, but do remember to put a ticket in at 08.00 otherwise you will get a fine. Room was comfortable, although too hot, try not to get room 87 as it is near the kitchen fan.

"Great coffee!"

"Full of character but that means..."

3
04/06/2016

Stayed here for one night when visiting Salisbury and Stone Henge. We are long running Best Western customers and so believed we were in for a guaranteed great stay. Overall the hotel is beautiful. Very old and vintage and all its character remains intact. Lovely courtyard. Vines, seating and just a nice hideaway from the surrounding city. The room was modern and very nice and clean. Big bed, docking unit, tv, en suite. All great. However, we were welcomed by interesting blinds in the bathroom... No parking. Nearby (cheap) pay and display car park which borders the hotel almost. Brown street. Charges do not apply from 6pm-8am so you don't end up spending too much. Now there was one major issue which is not advertised. Due to its old nature and listing under the English heritage... They have single paned Windows which cannot be upgraded. Therefore we endured a night of traffic, rowdy pub goers and bin men in morning. The level of noise just made me think we may as well have been on the streets ourselves. We couldn't sleep. At all. Now for a BEDroom to not allow a nights sleep, it's kind of missing its primary function. Was not good at all. However I do not wish to slander this hotel. I have since been in contact with them complaining about the stupidity of no sound proofing in a hotel room. Arguing that it is Salisbury city centre is a bad response considering I've stayed in HOSTELS in Rome, Berlin and Paris; hearing nothing when I sleep. The matter was resolved by quick and helpful responses. Great customer service. If it had double glazing, it would be a lovely place. I definitely recommend, I just think it needs fairer advertising. We planned to escape a noisy home life, ended up being in noisier. Maybe just request a room that faces the courtyard and not the high street road.

02/06/2016

How nice to stay in a hotel so central with such a lovely courtyard. Enormous rooms with comfy beds and easy to walk to anywhere we wanted. The cathedral was 10 minutes away, and lots of shops and restaurants were even nearer. Downside was breakfast could have been better, though the toast was brilliant!

"Oldest hotel in Salisbury"

01/06/2016

I had visited the hotel as a meeting place before I stayed at the hotel on the first night of on an annual two-day bike ride from either Weston-super-Mare or Bristol, en route back to Hayling Island, for several years. The hotel is delightfully 'old-fashioned', but has very fine rooms and a great atmosphere. The bar is good, as is the restaurant, which is of a high quality. Their breakfast is one of the best I've ever had, with excellent locally produced ingredients. Worth a visit

Very good location for a one night stop over, bang in the Centre Room was fine and well equipped We did not have breakfast in as it appeared expensive Limited On site car parking is offered, can be an issue, as after 3 cars all the rest are ''difficult'' spaces. Staff were all fine Would stay there again

30/05/2016

Stayed in this old hotel one night. Lobby & corridors a bit worn. Room was fine, with newer bathroom. Getting from lobby to room could be a bit complicated, especially if you had a lot of luggage, with possible multiple stairways and room numbers out of sequence. Free wifi was fine. Door from street locks early (10PM?) and you need to ring for night clerk to get through two doors. Could be sketchy if you were arriving at late hour. Reasonably priced. Left before breakfast so don't know about that, or parking. Near train station with frequent trains to London & Bristol.

The room was great (recently refurbished), the staff were great and thank you to everyone at the hotel for making the 60th birthday celebration in the restaurant a very special, memorable experience. "Great hotel"

22/05/2016

Stayed twice, great rooms both times. The staff are very friendly and always helpful. We had a couple of niggles that were resolved with apologies and smiles. Thoroughly recommend. It is very central for all the sights and just a short walk from all the restaurants. Didn't eat in the hotel restaurant but did have a bar meal, the food was extremely good. The problem we had was that our starters and main course were served at the same time! This was resolved by the catering manager with a smile, an apology and a discount. This will not deter us from staying again Also my husband says it is the best full English breakfast he has had, anywhere.

18/05/2016

Travel a lot on Business to Salisbury and have always stayed at another hotel. After inadequate facilities and customer service at The White Hart, stayed here on the recommendation of a friend. WOW. Fantastic place. Room wonderful and full of history. The hotel offers a mixture of old and new - let them know your preference and they will try and accommodate. Bathrooms amazing. Bed very comfortable. Customer Service excellent and food hits the spot. 3* but should be 5*. Will definitely make this my hotel of choice when staying in Salisbury.

This hotel catered for approximately 70 cyclists on a one night stopover. Securely accommodated our bikes. Served a fabulous buffet breakfast. The rooms were spotless. The staff very friendly. "Family Birthday Meal"

5
13/05/2016

The birthday meal was for my MIL who celebrated her 80th birthday and was attended by around 24 people. My Daughter and I are vegetarian and the Restaurant catered for us with a lovely three course meal. All meals were well presented, hot and the quantity of food was just right. Everyone's meal arrived very close together and was superb. The waiting staff were attentive but unobtrusive and also presented the birthday cake which my FIL supplied. Mark, the manager couldn't do enough to make this a memorable day for us all and handled my FIL `strict requirements` very well indeed. I would definitely wholeheartedly recommend The Red Lion restaurant. None of the group stayed at the Hotel. .

Great room, clean facilities, lovely location. The hotel is charming, you can feel the history ooze out of it. The courtyard as you walk in is stunning, the birdsong was so loud i joked it was piped in by speakers. The breakfast was superb. Great service.

"Good location but....."

3
10/05/2016

This is a great central location within easy walking distance of much of the City. However if in any of the rooms overlooking the main street it is VERY noisy with City revellers - all night (3am - 4am) on Friday and Saturday's. Not helped by drunken , irate guest setting off fire alarm when all the rest of Hotel guests in bed!

"What a wonderful old world hotel"

5
09/05/2016

This is a genuine old world hotel that has been kept up in perfect shape. Lovely redone rooms. Super bar and lobby. Warm inviting lobby with fireplace. Gorgeous breakfast room. So handy to all the events downtown and just a couple of blocks to the cathedral.

"Very nice "

08/05/2016

Stayed one night, no parking on site so had to use public car park at rear, hard to find if you are not familiar with the town. Very good and comfortable rooms, had squeaky floor boards, the bathroom was large but ready for a refit, I had issues with the power. All in all a lovely hotel with history and I enjoyed my stay.

"Charming English Inn"

5
03/05/2016

I booked this Inn for my 1st night in England as it is central to the town of Salisbury and Stonehenge . The staff were welcoming and the décor was rich and inviting. The outdoor patio is lovely. We walked through the tea room up a staircase and through charmingly decorated hallways to our room, which was beautifully decorated with a canopy four poster bed, comfortable upholstered chairs and lovely draperies. Tea service was tucked away in a cabinet. It exceeded my expectations of a quaint, traditionally English Inn.

"History lovers will love it here"

25/04/2016

We received a warm welcome, good service and the room was beautiful. Newly and tastefully decorated, with a comfortable queen size bed. The history of the building, it's previous owners and articles in and around the hotel are of great interest and well worth a look. Nice, filling breakfast, thank you.

"Rather disappointing Sunday lunch"

3
24/04/2016

A group of us met for a pre-ordered Sunday lunch - rather disappointing. The beef was rather "challenging" but would have been helped with a sharp knife. The roast potatoes were barely cooked and huge and the plates weren't very warm. The dessert was definitely not roasted peaches but huge lumps of hard peach in amongst tinned custard and cream - very odd. Expensive for what it was.

"Fab afternoon tea"

5
21/04/2016

I came with a friend for afternoon tea for her birthday. We'd fortunately booked a table in the Victoria Lounge and it was busy Saturday; a great atmosphere, excellent staff and marvellous tea (sandwiches, cakes, scone, jam and cream, shortbread), lots of tea. We followed it up with a celebratory glass of Prosecco.

"Short but comfortable stay"

5
19/04/2016

We were only staying in the hotel for one night, but couldn't fault it. The room was comfortable -- especially the four-poster bed, which was an unexpected surprise when we entered the room. Staff were helpful and courteous. The breakfast was great too. Overall, an enjoyable stay and would definitely stay here again.

"Very disappointing"

2
18/04/2016

I stayed at the Red Lion in Salisbury for two nights on a combination of business and to visit family. The intention had been to book a table for eight people on the Saturday night for dinner but the experience on the Friday night ensured that we booked elsewhere in the city. The barman was, without exception, the rudest man I have encountered in any hotel, anywhere in the world. The room was noisy and over warm. Every time the toilet in the adjacent room was flushed it sounded as though it was actually in the bedroom. Utterly dreadful experience. My impression was that staff morale was rock bottom. My son who had booked with a colleague for the Saturday night (before I had the opportunity to stop him) said that the breakfast was served by an indifferent waitress who clearly appeared to want to be anywhere other than her place of work. The hotel is perfectly situated in Salisbury which is a beautiful city. However if it is friendly service you are looking for I would strongly suggest you go elsewhere.

"Very Comfortable"

07/04/2016

Our room was a long way from the Reception and other facilities but it was worth the walk. Our room was very comfortable and appeared recently refurbished. We had masses of space and our bathroom, with a free standing bath, was on a lower level. Being far from reception caused Wifi to be intermittent but would certainly stay here again. Bar staff was very welcoming and friendly as was the member on staff on duty in the breakfast room. Covered secure parking was, I thought, expensive so we parked in a public car park adjacent to the hotel. The Hotel parking was empty!

"Very old hotel"

2
06/04/2016

This hotel is a very old one with a fireplace in the room and wooden ceiling. Not particularly well maintained, the bathroom needs some renovations. There is a free wifi in the room and it is fast. It is located near the market plaza in downtown. For one night the price is 88 pound. :-(

"Excellent Stay. Just a few flaws."

06/04/2016

A lovely hotel, 13th Century so quirky building with character. Staff extremely friendly and helpful. My room was very small but had everything I needed. Unfortunately situated above the function room where they had a wedding. I thought the DJ was in my room!! I told the hotel that they really should advise guests of weddings when they book as it can affect your decision if it impacts the other guests' stay. They have rooms that are accessible for disabled guests which is good and they sat us near the door each morning in the restaurant as my mum cannot walk far. There is a lovely courtyard area which would be nice in good weather. The lounge area is nice and you can also order food here. I am Coeliac and there was only one item I could eat. However, the chef did make me something off menu but it was very sparse and not filling. The restaurant advertised an Easter Sunday meal with a set price so we booked the restaurant for the evening. Upon arrival we were told that the menu was lunch only. No mention of this on the menus/information left out for guests! We were not too pleased about this. Overall, this hotel has everything a guest would need and is well situated.

"Manager defends hotel."

1
04/04/2016

We stayed overnight. The whole hotel was very warm but as there appeared to be a lot of elderly guests it was probably comfortable for the majority. However, I was unable to properly turn off the radiator in our room, it made weird noises all night long. This was a melody to go with the broken flush in the bathroom. With the windows open for fresh air, you are made aware of just how noisy Salisbury can be in the early hours. Breakfast, according to the menu, is cooked specially for you. This translates into 'help yourself from the buffet'. None of the pastries looked fresh, the cooked breakfast was heaped into serving trays on a hot plate. I had hoped for so much better, we'd previously had a lunch in the Red Lion and it was so good we thought we'd like to come and stay at a later date. We did complain at the time and have had a reply from the manager saying that no one else had complained about the food. No mention of loo! Would not recommend or stay here again but the staff we did have dealings with were very helpful.

"Awful. Don't stay here...Put me off Best Western for life"

1
04/04/2016

From the very beginning this stay was the worst hotel experience I've ever had. The receptionist was SO RUDE and clearly hadn't got a clue about how to treat a same sex couple asking if we wanted "separate rooms" because the booking was wrong. He couldn't sort out the mistake and seemed to get in such a flap calling over various supervisors and managers, at one point there were 5 people behind reception. It was a simple mistake but could've been handled easily, in the end the receptionist in question (short bald rude little man) had the audacity to say it was MY fault that i hadn't selected the right room online. After this i would have thought they would wave the extra £30 just as compensation for his rudeness. In the end I complained to various managers(too many chiefs...) and got nowhere. I then complained to two people at head office...I got nowhere. In the end I received no compensation, shoddy "copy and pasted" apologies (where the name of the manager was wrong) and a lack of understanding or genuine acknowledgement of what happened. Awful awful awful, DON'T STAY HERE. Also the shower dripped all night and the room wasn't even that nice.

"friendly hotel in the centre of salisbury"

04/04/2016

Just come back from week-end away at the red lion hotel, staff so helpful nothing too much trouble, a credit to the managment and went the extra mile, We have stayed mainly at 4* hotels, but this 3* leaves them in the shade, Excellent postion, right in the middle of the city, we let the train take the strain which was only a short walk from the station, breakfast choice was excellent could not have asked for more, hotel, has lots of history and very quirky room layout, just adding to it's appeal, haven for birds in the courtyard, which is also very quiet, ideal for a coffee or something stronger, seems very popular with locals and the afternoon tea was excellent, we will most definitely be back

The Hotel,is run by Mark and the rest of his staff and them like him are some of the nicest most helpful people you will find. The Hotel has a place in our heart for many reasons, but for first timers going there, you will want to book again and again, after having such a warm welcome. The food from breckie to evening meal is great, its location is perfect,be it having a glass of wine in the court yard in the sun or inside snug by the open fire, this will tick every box.Thumbs up :)

Very nice hotel right in the heart of Salisbury. Warm and welcoming staff, lovely lounge area and great breakfast service. Lovely aspects of history dotted throughout the building too. Highly recommended.

"Birthday lunch"

31/03/2016

We had lunch for six in the bar/lounge area. Pleasant atmosphere, though perhaps a little sterile. Billed as the 1220 lounge, but with precious little medieval character except the draught. Friendly service. Nice starters. Inedible steak. Though I believe the fish and chips was perfectly ok. All in all a moderately decent English hotel meal experience.

"2 night stay"

30/03/2016

Comfortable if a little creaky in parts (it is very old after all). Staff very helpful and friendly. Room 90 not too bad big comfortable bed, lovely big TV, however only a shower, I much prefer a bath. Too many doors and stairs to negotiate between reception and room. I had a "street" facing room but noise wasn't an issue midweek. I booked car parking in advance and if you do this there is a very small 6 spaces but handy and secure. I would however suggest calling just before you arrive to ask them to open the gate. I had to pull up on a busy road get out of car and push a bell ( not possible whilst in the car!) this could be improved somehow and car park could be better signposted as I had to do a round the houses trip to get back to it as I missed it on the one way street first time around. Food for both the breakfast, pretty standard fayre ( cooked items and plates should be hotter) but fine, evening dining was ok, obviously aimed at business market to some degree with stylish dishes well presented but, for me, very small portions. Also there were several items on an already very limited menu which were not available. I think they should change the menu from night to night as I found myself having same thing two nights as the alternatives that I wanted were not available. Bad planning by the Chef I would suggest. However it was well cooked and tasty. I would come back but might try a different room next time.

"Lovely place"

29/03/2016

Lovely place in the city centre - the oldest hotel in the UK. Ideal for a day visit to Stonehenge & Salisbury. Comfortable & quiet, good restaurant & excellent breakfast but unfortunately no car park & limited Wifi access. Definitely worth the price.

"Loads of character and history!"

28/03/2016

Spent the long weekend here- the room was large and clean and very quiet despite a wedding taking place. The place is absolutely full of character, from the lovely approach through the archway to the nooks and crannies of the corridors. Friendly staff-if a little stretched at times but always willing to help. A great location too and we'd love to go back in the future.

"Nice hotel let down by very uncomfortable bed"

3
28/03/2016

We could feel the springs of the bed sticking into our backs as we tried to sleep. such as shame as otherwise nice hotel with good breakfast etc. Good central location. Mean attitude of the owners - only one chair in the room, one little sachet of milk per person per night. One small container of soap to share in double room

"The oldest hotel I have stayed in"

4
19/03/2016

Hotel comfortable with good decor and very clean rooms. This place has an "olde world" charm and the nature of the rooms and the layout of the hotel reflects this. The outside has an off street courtyard which would be a nice place to sit in the summer. The staff were very friendly and helpful. The breakfast was very good with a good selection of well presented and well cooked food.

"The Red Lion Salisbury"

5
19/03/2016

Extremely characterful old hotel, very central with flat walking to Cathedral, museums, shops and markets. The courtyard is surrounded by vines complete with a host of twittering sparrows. An oasis in a busy city with charming attentive staff..

"Lovely Weekend Break"

4
18/03/2016

We spent a weekend here and had a wonderful time.Excellent food, both breakfast and evening dinner. Despite being in the city centre, the room was quiet and we didn't hear any disturbances from outside. Lovely super king size bed. Only downside is the parking. The hotel has about six spaces inside and they are tight, or you have the option of a nearby public car park but this can get busy.

"Charming courtyard"

4
17/03/2016

The charming courtyard made a beautiful setting for this hotel in its enviable position in the heart of the city. Once past the reception and lounge bars, the quirkiness of the layout lent interest to the corridors as views of the hotel and the cityscape changed. The room was a good size, the beds comfortable and the the bathroom excellent. The vegetarian options in both the restaurant and the bar were very limited. Service was prompt and courteous at all times and the staff were friendly. Last time we were here there was a delightful soft-toy lion - Henry- gracing the bed; we missed him!

"Wonderful Hotel"

5
16/03/2016

We really enjoyed our stay at this hotel. The twin room we booked was very clean, beds comfortable, bottles of water and tea / coffee provided. Room had ensuite. Free wifi in all areas of hotel. 24 hour reception available and meals could be taken in the room for a £5 charge. The breakfast buffet was wonderful. Good variety of cereals, fruit, yoghurts, cold meats and cooked breakfast. Very tasty! There was a very comfortable lounge that we could use any time of the day or evening and meals could be taken there. There was also a restaurant on site and a bar which we didn't use. The staff were very friendly and welcoming. We will definitely return if the price is right!

"Noisy rooms"

3
14/03/2016

Avoid a room overlooking the high street especially at weekends when the cocktail lounge adjacent to the hotel tips out at all hours. we were still privy to all the loud conversations until 3 am. Not good. Breakfast excellent which saved the day!

"overnight"

4
11/03/2016

overnight stay, room clean and comfortable, bathroom v good, breakfast very good. although arrived late restaurant shuts at 9 and no room service.Hotel looks a little dated from outside, but fully functional, downside is if you are in rooms 40 - 49 you have to climb some steep stairs to get to room, not good for heavy cases or the elderly.

"Lovely property"

08/03/2016

We had a lovely romantic weekend here. Check in was efficient and helpful. The room was really good. There was a large and comfortable bed and a spacious room. Everything was spotless. The bathroom had a nice walk in shower and there was good WiFi. The only let down was breakfast on Sunday. I think it was chef's day off. My boyfriend ordered the haddock which was served without any garnish or toast and tasted foul. My French toast was flavourless. I had expected much better food. That said overall the hotel was lovely and I would definitely stay again.

"Excellent value"

5
25/02/2016

We stayed at the Best Western Red Lion Hotel for just one night on a B &B basis. The room was spacious, the location right in the town and the breakfast was everything you could want. I would stay there again without doubt.

"Overnight Stay Best Western Salisbury"

5
23/02/2016

I can highly recommend the Red Lion Hotel which is part of the Best Western Group. I stayed for 1 night only whilst in Salisbury for business. The accomodation was reasonably priced, staff were all very friendly and helpful. The hotel itself, and my room was lovely, clean and comfortable. I ate in the restaurant for my evening meal upon arrival, the food was of excellent quality and reasonable costs. Breakfast was also of the same quality. I would definitely stay again if I ever find myself in Salisbury again.

"A reunion break"

4
22/02/2016

The four of us meet up at the hotel for a get together. Booking in was a bit chaotic as there was a wedding party. Some extra staff when they are that busy would have been good. The staff were all helpful throughout our stay. The rooms we had were very nice, well decorated and very clean and comfortable. On Saturday night though the noise from the nearby nightclub was loud and carried on until 3 am, which did somewhat spoil the stay. We would stay again, but not on a Saturday. The restaurant and the bar in the hotel were good.

"Valentine's wknd"

4
22/02/2016

My partner treated me to a night away for our 6th Valentine's Day together, from the outside, the hotel didn't look like much but as you walk under the arch you enter a beautiful little courtyard. Inside the hotel are beautiful old antiques such as mirrors, book cases and clocks, with their history attached for you to read which I thought was a lovely feature. As we entered our room I was gob smacked with its beautiful old wooden bed with a 6' headboard, fireplace and parts of the original walls of the hotel encased behind glass, the room was stunning and very Georgian. On a side note I was also informed that there are more modern rooms if that's not your thing. The bed was comfortable and we had a lovely nights sleep. The staff was really helpful and everywhere was spotless, I would defiantly go thee again ??

"A few nights away"

3
19/02/2016

My husband and I had two nights away here mid week. The hotel is very clean and the service very good. We ate in the restaurant which was average, although the buffet breakfast was good. My only real disappointment was our room, which was located in another area of the building and accessed through an external door which led onto the main thoroughfare. This was incredible noisy in the morning with people leaving early. Otherwise a pleasant stay.

"Couldn't believe what we got"

4
18/02/2016

My husband and I met relatives in Salisbury on Sunday (Valentine's Day). I decided to book afternoon tea at the Red Lion. My husband and I go there for lunch when we visit Salisbury and love the atmosphere and food we get there, so we thought afternoon tea would be a lovely treat for our relatives and a great place to sit, relax and catch up. We received a warm welcome, and shown to a table in the lounge all ready set up for us. We made ourselves comfortable in the love,y sofas and chairs and waited for out tea to arrive. My oh my. The smart,y dressedwaiter arrived carrying a tray with the pots of tea, followed by another waiter carrying two cake stands. now, I'm a bit of an Afternoon connoisseur, but Never have I seen such an amazing variety. Sandwiches and quiche on the bottom layer, bake well tart, cherry Madeira and chocolate brownie on the middle layer and a scone, home made biscuits and millionaires shortbread on the top, together with a small pannacotta. Jam and cream were Separate. I've never had more cream than I needed for my scone before. all this for £12.00. We had a wonderful time, chatting and slowly making our way through all the wonderful goodies. It was a pity not many people were there as it would have made a bit better atmosphere. The only reason I have given this a 4 and not a five is that having been served no one came to ask us if everything was OK, and if we wanted more tea? We had to go and find a waiter to ask for more, and were served quickly bit it would have been better if they had come to us. Three days later, I was having afternoon tea elsewhere, paid twice as much and it wasn't a patch on The Red Lion. Keep it up guys. You will be seeing me back and all the people I tell about you.

"Fantastic break away"

15/02/2016

Me and my boyfriend booked this hotel through Living Social which included a two night stay, three course dinner on the first night with a bottle of wine, afternoon tea with sparkling wine on the next day and breakfast on both mornings. The room we stayed in was lovely and decorated very well. It was also cleaned every morning to a high standard too. The only down side was that at night time we could hear the traffic and people coming out of the pubs/clubs which woke me up. I don't think this is something the hotel could solve as we chose to stay in the city centre so perhaps not the best place to stay if you like peace and quiet. The food in the restaurant was lovely and we couldn't fault it. The breakfast was also kept topped up with everything needed. The afternoon tea was excellent and the lounge also gave a nice atmosphere to eat it in. The hotel is situated well and gave us the ability to walk around the city centre without the need for the car. Also only a 20 minute drive to Stonehenge which was also a nice to see. All the hotel staff were extremely helpful and welcoming. Overall we had an excellent stay and wouldn't hesitate in coming back!

"Another nice stay..."

11/02/2016

Another good stay. The staff, as usual, were excellent, very friendly and willing to have a laugh. I had what is becoming my regular room, and I feel very at home here. The buffet breakfast was great, a good start to the day As always, I look forward to my next stay at the Red Lion.

"Excellent hotel"

10/02/2016

We stayed 2 nights in this hotel. The building itself is fascinating, full of history and smack bang in the centre of town. The staff were very friendly. The room was very comfortable and warm. The food was fab - both breakfasts and lunches. Will definitely stay there again.

"restful"

09/02/2016

We booked through secret escapes on a very good deal. A superior room with three course evening meal, full breakfast and wine with the meal. £115 for one night for two people. The room was really lovely spotless clean and the bathroom complete wit walk in shower looked new. You could heat the room to your needs. The bed was huge. The meal was gorgeous and the staff really attentive. Breakfast was cooked to order on the Saturday morning was excellent, it was really hot and the scrambled egg to die for. Sundays breakfast was buffet which was fine but could have been hotter. The lounge was very relaxing as was the stay. The location is great too. I would definitely recommend this hotel and would like to go back. If there was a negative, I would say our room could have done with. Dressing mirror/hairdrying mirror not one on the inside of the wardrobe door.

"convenient reasonably-priced hotel"

5
07/02/2016

Very well-placed near the Cathedral and city centre the Red Lion's staff were obliging and efficient. The single room was a little dark but for an overnight stay, perfectly adequate. The bathroom by contrast was bright with what looked like new fixtures. All was clean. There were generous supplies of tea, decent coffee, bottled water and biscuits. There was an ironing board and iron and hair dryer in the room.

"1220 bar used to have a great relaxing atmosphere"

2
05/02/2016

I recently returned to what used to be one of my favourite places to relax and unwind. It must have changed hands as it has undergone quite a refurbishment in the 1220 bar - tiles on the floor instead of the previous carpet in an effort to make it more contemporary! The service has also gone right downhill with the waiter struggling to understand English - I had to repeat myself 3 times when asking for hot milk to accompany my coffee! The afternoon tea also arrived without tea which we had to ask for. We also had to ask for side plates and knives to enable us to spread jam and cream on our scones! The open fire no longer works either which further ruins what used to be a very welcoming feature especially at this time of year. Sorry, but I won't be in hurry to return and would not recommend it.

"Enjoyable stay"

04/02/2016

My wife and I had a 2 day break here. This old hotel has a nice courtyard, which would be nice to sit out in if weather better. Friendly welcome when we arrived. Our room was nice enough but the windows would not shut properly so as it was very windy it was blowing into the room, but having the electric radiator on meant it stayed warm. The bathroom was a problem though, as only had a towel radiator, which even though we took towels off all night the bathroom was cold in the morning. Shower also poor pressure. Breakfast room was lovely with large choice of fruit, cereals, pastries and choice of cooked. Bar was pleasant and reasonably priced. Wifi very good. Having read some of the reviews below makes me wonder if the General Manager actually reads before he posts the standard comment, as whether good or bad he posts the same reply !!

"Loved our stay!"

We have come back from our two-night stay at The Red Lion and can honestly say we enjoyed every minute of it. From the staff, to the food/drink to our room. We went away as a pre-baby trip and came back feeling relaxed. The staff were all very helpful and couldn't do enough for you. We ate in the restaurant and had an enjoyable experience. If I had to be fussy, the Venison was quite tough but that is my only grumble. Breakfast each morning was plentiful. We had a roast dinner on the Sunday which was soooo good! Would we come back or recommend?.....yes we would! Thank you to all the staff who made our stay an enjoyable one! :o)

I'm not sure how many times I've stayed at The Red Lion, but each time has been excellent. The staff are very pleasant and helpful, and the rooms have always been very nice and always clean. The breakfast is always a delight, I had the Eggs Benedict this last time, perfectly poached eggs and lovely hollandaise sauce. I look forward to many more stays...

"Excellent New Year Package"

11/01/2016

With four friends, my wife and I stayed at The Red Lion Hotel, Salisbury for a 3 day break including their New Year's Eve Gala Dinner. The Gala evening was brilliant. We had a sumptuous meal and each course was delicious. The evening finished with a disco, providing great dance music and the whole evening was a great success. The other guests were a very friendly group which made it all the more enjoyable. The staff on the night and for the duration of our stay could not be faulted. They were very friendly, industrious and so helpful. Our room was very well appointed, very comfortable and as good as any we've stayed in here or abroad.

"Felt Unwelcome"

2
03/01/2016

We were very disappointed to find that our room was above a very loud disco so we weren't able to relax at all after our day's Christmas shopping at the markets. We felt that the hotel belonged to the two very noisy Christmas parties going on and our stay was very inconsequential to the hotel. We weren't shown where breakfast would be served or what time or anything. When we brought the noise issue to the attention to the hotel they were very unsympathetic and basically said it's to be expected. Great Western were also defensive and entirely unsympathetic. We feel we should have been warned about the parties as basic customer service and care

"Good value hotel in great location"

4
03/01/2016

The Red Lion is very centrally located so it is very easy to walk to the cathedral and other places of interest and there are also lots of good restaurants, pubs, bars and coffee shops nearby. We booked a standard double room and it was of a good size with a bath rather than a shower which we prefer and the beds were comfortable. The staff were efficient and pleasant but the main reason we chose this hotel was that at £42 a night with breakfast it was very good value. Breakfast included a hot buffet with plenty of choice although you can also order from their menu which lists eggs benedict, florentine, kipper and pancakes - we rather regretted heading straight for the buffet when we could have ordered something that would have been freshly cooked but we were rather limited for time. There is a pubic car park just around the back of the hotel which is free overnight (from 6pm tiill 8 am) and the ticket machine adds the hours on from 8am so you can pay for 3 hours in advance and there is no need to get up at 8 to fed the metre, although the car park is limited to a three hour stay. All in all a very nice hotel but try to get rooms overlooking the courtyard rather than the front of the hotel as the street side can be noisy and do look at the hotel website as they can have good deals - we got a good third off.

"Great for one night"

02/01/2016

This hotel was a pleasant surprise. It's right in the centre of Salisbury so everywhere was easily walkable. The hotel had no car parking but we managed to park in Brown Street just around the corner for under £5. Given our stay was for New Year's Eve our nights sleep was comfy and quiet; no street noise. We didn't eat at the hotel at all; sadly breakfast finished too early on New Year's Day for us but there's plenty of places in town to eat.

"Nice spot!!!"

we booked as the menu looked good for dinner but this turned out to be the worst part of our stay, restaurant staff showed lack of work ethics took 45 mins to get a bottle of wine then on several occasions there were no staff around to attend to guests only about 40 dinners but most were of the same opinion some 4 guests waited long time for main course we had nearly finished ours staff also stood around in a group talking and making a noise food not up to standard or amount of cheese course room 90 ok but road noise from revellers and traffic bad window dirty inside and out paint on glass not enough mirrors for make up or hair drying bed good breakfast ok told duty manager on leaving of our experience she didn't seem concerned about the complaint

27/12/2015

Spent 3 nights at this lovely hotel. Could not have wished for more. The food very good, well prepared and well presented. Breakfast was a feast and an excellent choice. The Dinner menu was varied and something for every one. All members of staff with whom I came into contact were exemplary. My room was spotless, warm and comfortable. The high standards set at this wonderful hotel can only be attributed to the General Manager who was very much in evidence, thus ensuring that management by example actually works. Thanks to all for ensuring a comfortable and enjoyable stay.

"Funny Denying Receptionist! "

4
13/12/2015

Stayed here one night. Tried checking in, Receptionist said Travel Agent hasn't paid for my room, but had paid for my colleagues. I could see she or the hotel had messed up but sorted it with TA. Unfortunately 4 Japanese tourists arrived so we had to wait for them to be booked in. Once they are done, me next. She says you're on the 2nd floor, but mind if you use the lift "you'll end up getting stuck behind them little nips again!" Blooming heck, thought I was in the 2nd world war again! Room was okay. Other member of staff didn't understand the word 'lift'... So I used the stairs! Would definitely stay again...

On arrival at the hotel we were made to feel welcome, The problems on our first night were dealt with quickly and efficiently. The room was lovely and clean, comfy bed. All the services we needed. Great internet connection, All through our stay we were made to feel very welcome. Food was great, service was great, cleanliness was immpecable. We will visit again in the spring. The location is great and the hotel parking was a real advantage. We did not mind paying the £15 per night for the parking as we knew our car was secure. The security codes on the doors are a fantastic addition. It made us feel our belongings in our room were very safe.

"An overnight sensation"

12/12/2015

Christmas shopping in Salisbury can be a crowd and parking nightmare, but it doesn't have to be. The answer is to make it a mini holiday and drive up on Friday, as we did, and stay overnight at this amazing historic hotel including a pre-booked space in the limited parking area in Brown Street. Our room was a spotless delight with all the facilities one would expect from a "5 star", including the biggest bed ever !. Arriving at 2.00 pm ( the earliest check-in time) we immediately made for the Xmas market and by Dinner Time had nearly completed our gift list. Our Dinner in the Lounge was way up in the top ten meals we had ever experienced during our world wide travels and included a starter of Tempura battered duck balls with udon noodles and an amazing sauce , followed by calves liver, mustard mash & savoy cabbage for my wife , while I continued with an Oriental theme with Char Sui Belly pork, charred Pak Choi and noodles , quite ambrosial !! With an outstanding bottle of French Rose and Ginger and strawberry local ice creams we agreed that Xmas had indeed started. All this and highly professional staff .

Four of us had lunch in the coffee lounge area. Our reservation appeared to be non-existent which was not a good start. Fortunately, we had arrived in good time and a table was available. We had chicken and liver dishes. The food and service were very good and we shall certainly return - hopefully for a five star visit.

"Lovely but tired"

09/12/2015

I like this hotel and have stayed a couple of times, the food is excellent and the staff are friendly. Room décor is extremely dated but the bed's are comfortable and feel like the mattresses have been renewed fairly recently. The bathroom again was very tired but everything worked and the shower was powerful enough not to be disappointing.

"Better than the sum of its parts!"

Top Tip No 1: they didn't tell us you need to book a car park slot so recommend you do so. Not the end of the world to park in a multi-storey 3 mins away (£8/day) but best to book a space at the hotel! Perfect location for exploring Salisbury in this quite good and old hotel. Food was okay. Breakfast standard buffet-style but the slightly aggressive head waitress a bit off putting. With fewer guests on the Monday morning, there was no buffet but we weren't told and found out we had to order specially when confronted by an empty buffet! Felt that the lounge/bar area was a bit understaffed as there was an occasional longish wait for someone to appear to take an order etc... but the staff themselves were very pleasant, especially on reception. An issue over a meal in the bar was very well handled. Room was very comfy if a bit tired decoration-wise but no complaints. Expected to be woken by Xmas parties but seemed to be confined to the other side of the hotel and weren't disturbed. Would recommend and will return.

"Nice Hotel - Good Location"

08/12/2015

Just had 2 nights away to do some Christmas Shopping and stayed here so that we were with in walking distance of everything. The hotel is a short walk from the main square where the Christmas stalls were and it was a good location for everything. The staff were all very helpful and booking in was easy. We had a slightly larger room with a at least King size bed (might have been a Super size) but it was very very comfortable. The room had a separate lounge area with another TV and between this and the bedroom was the bathroom and this all looked over the court yard, so it was a lovely setup. This is a very old hotel and the floors are all wonky and the decoration reflexes the age of the building which makes it very charming. The only thing that let the room down was the paint was peeling off the celling which did not look very good, apart from that the room was very clean. Parking is very limited so book ahead but there is a cheap pay and display at the back of the hotel (£1.70 all day Sunday) so this is not a major problem. We will be back next year as we loved Salisbury and this hotel was good value and good location.

07/12/2015

Stayed for one night on a Saturday in a Superior Double overlooking the courtyard. Very quiet and well appointed room with smart bathroom. All very clean and tidy. Check in was friendly and efficient. Only fly in the ointment was the unavailability of the restaurant for our evening meal due to a pre arranged function. Nothing to worry about though as we enjoyed a lovely meal in the guest lounge. Service was very good. Car parking was in Culver St. multi storey just along the road, which incidentally is free on a Sunday. Excellent location for this hotel for all the delights of Salisbury. We will be back. Congratulations to the team. Recommended!

"decent enough"

05/12/2015

Spacious and well appointed bedrooms with comfortable and large beds. On the down side rooms overlooking the main road are susceptible to disturbance from late night revellers, so a good night's sleep is not guaranteed. You might expect the bar in a 13th century inn to be cosy and snug, full of character and oak beams but you'd be disappointed. It's not conducive to lingering. Limited secure parking is available for £15 per day but there are car parks only minutes away. We didn't eat at the hotel, preferring to sample other establishments. It is a good quality city centre hotel close to all amenities and that's about it. Not suitable for guests with mobility problems.

"Pleasant Stay"

05/12/2015

We spent one night here for a little Xmas break . The Hotel is very well placed , short walk from Station , Cathedral ,shops etc. We had a refurbished room on the 2nd floor . Very quiet , nice bathroom although took ages to run a bath very poor water pressure ! Little tip as well take the lift , it took us forever to locate our room , upstairs downstairs , all part of the fun . Very nice breakfast in pleasant spacious surroundings. Plenty of choice , decent coffee and great bread for toasting . Nice and hot as well . Didn't use the bar as there are numerous hostelries nearby but looked OK We arrived by train as parking looked poor , but plenty of car parks nearby . Overall a pleasant stay in a quaint hotel and am glad we chose it over others in the area.

"Lovely Hotel, but no sleep for me"

3
02/12/2015

On entering the hotel it has the air of a very expensive place and something special. The place has lots of character, and I really want to say when I got to the reception "Can you get someone to tend the coach and water the horses". I was in room 91 which was a clean and well laid out room. Good clean bathroom. Though if you do have that room, please watch the step as soon as you go in the door. No warnings and can take you by surprise. The evening meal was not so good and the experience was poor. I order Fish & chips in the bar, the gent behind the bar thought I wanted crisps!!! It was soon apparent that English was not his first language. So I had to order my food and beer via pointing.... When the meal came the fish was not hot, yet the fish was well over cooked. I shudder to think. That was rounded off by getting 1 or 2 hours sleep. There was a noise coming from I don't know where that was intermittent. There was no noise barrier on the single glazed window from the traffic outside. To be fair it wasn't the hotel fault being a 13th century building, I hardly expect triple glazing. The breakfast was good though so I started the day half decent. I would hope the management know that if your staff can't communicate with the customers then they cannot give them the service they deserve. It may be cheaper, but it might become a downhill slope if the service isn't there.

12 of ate a pre-booked meal in the bar. The bar is not really desighned to hold that number of people seated for a meal and it would have been better if we had been in a separate room. Regretfully the steaks that were ordered 'medium' all came 'rare' and one had to be sent back to the kitchen. The bar staff was helpful but it would have been better if our trainee bar person could speak better english

Four of us had lunch here, including 90 year old auntie. The menu had plenty of choice for all of us; the meals were all excellent and service was very good. We were particularly impressed with how quickly an extra cushion was brought, to make auntie comfortable in her seat. I'd love to stay in this historic coaching inn.

Stayed twice in last week. Had great room recently reburbished. Great bathroom but shower has no pressure and it takes forever to get wet!!! Public areas are ok with mixture of old and modern and need of update in places. However, why have a modern bar in such a lovely old building. Why have open fires and not use them. Ok the are gas but have them on!! Lovely sitting area away from the bar with nice sofas but no atmosphere. Great breakfast on first visit but second stay poor; perhaps weekend staff not same standard. Finally, if you have a bar make sure it is serviced as many people had to go to reception to ask to be served. All little things that could make a great hotel.

"A little worn around the edges"

3
21/11/2015

I have stayed here twice in the last two weeks and both times had completed different rooms, one was a traditional room with a four poster bed, the other a more modern room, both were very comfortable but you had to climb stairs to get to them, which is ok, but difficult if you have lots of luggage! They did have a lift to one of the rooms but it was out of service. That being said it was fine for me, but for the elderly traveler this may have caused a problem - the only problem it caused for me was that I had to look at the dirty carpets on the way to the rooms which put me off quite a bit! The bar area was small too, not enough tables, and if you want a small wine you get an old fashioned wine glass whereas if you plump for the large glass you get the more contemporary nicer glass. Now this might seem picky to some, but for someone who likes to have a glass of wine, the glass is very important. Perhaps that is their ruse!? The food is good, definitely worth having, not your usual Best Western offering. Parking is very limited, although the pay and display is very close by and much cheaper than the £15 their car park costs should you be successful enough to get a space.

Stayed overnight at this hotel , and it was great , the room was large and functional , but could do with upgrading , my friend had a room next to myself and his had been refurnished to a very high standard , so i guess the works are ongoing .. breakfast was very disappointing as everything on the hot buffet was cold , not even warm , so i think the management need to address this issue.

I visited this hotel with a group of 9 friends and we were able to get rooms on a busy weekend. The bar area has been revamped and we were able to get a table to drink together. The restaurant had a bit of a restricted menu when we were there so we went to eat out. The staff were very friendly and helpful and the rooms all clean tidy and not too hot. I had booked to stay in a different hotel in Salisbury however when we got there they had double booked so there was no room for us so we were moved to this hotel the Red Lion- I am so HAPPY we did. We stayed in one of the refurbished rooms which was just beautiful, the bathroom was huge with a large free standing bath tub - amazing!!! The bar area was newly refurbished too, it was so lovely not dear and service was friendly. The best bit of the hotel though by far is the courtyard sooo nice to sit out in :) breakfast was very yummy too, lots to choose from. Would highly recommend!!

Best Western status match got me an upgraded room with view of nice courtyard, large and modern room especially bathroom no major complaints but lacked in room safe and other normal hotel room features. Historic building and area but lack of parking an issue. Nice shopping area and park nearby, decent dining options and close to cathedral. Would stay again just could not rate higher due to parking and not easy getting to/from room with bags. Friendly and helpful staff. Restaurant and bar area, outdoor nice in warm weather.

Stay at this hotel and step back in time. I experienced a comfortable and peaceful two night stay. Easy access to Salisbury cathedral. Recommend the cooked breakfast. Room was very clean. Reception staff were helpful and welcoming. Be aware that the hotel parking is very tight; I recommend you park outside the hotel.

"Very comfortable and super location"

My Wife and I stayed here for a weekend with friends. The hotel is perfectly located for the city but has no parking. The public car parks are only a short walk and inexpensive. We had a very comfortable room which had presumably been recently renovated with a beautiful bathroom and all mod.cons. Although it was a little noisy from passers-by at night,it's in a city so it's expected. The reception and restaurant staff are very friendly and helpful and the breakfast buffet is very good. The only negative for us were the bar staff; they're friendly enough but completely inept! Overall we enjoyed our stay and it's good value.

"Very nice but parking is a problem"

I'm a great fan of the Best Western system, whereby it's like going to a chain hotel but not having the irritations of it being too similar to all the others. You know the minimum you'll get, and also that the flavour of the 'original' hotel hasn't been lost. This can sometimes work against you as that can be a bit too much... Anyway, the Red Lion is obviously an old hotel with a lot of history. It's in the middle of Salisbury which is great for a quick stopover as I did. You can walk to a lot of the historical stuff very easily. I didn't eat there but it seems to have a good menu in the restaurant. My main concern - as indicated in the title - is that if you didn't know it had limited parking (as I obviously didn't) that needs to be pre-booked, you can end up leaving your car in a public car park about a hundred yards away. While this is OK, as I was there on a Saturday night, and knowing the English 'yoof's predilection for strong liquor, I spent a lot of the 'post boozing' hours listening to them rolling down the road outside and hoping they didn't see my car as a puking/peeing destination as I'd parked it in a bay right next to the road. Oh well. Happily I can report that they hadn't done a dirty on my car and all was well except for my disturbed sleep.

I must say as one who has stayed in a lot of hotels on business the service at the Red Lion was excellent, personal and good value for money. The food in the restaurant was first class a real joy The room was of excellent quality too with a larger than average bed good lighting and facilities.

"RED LION REVIEW"

Basically the hotel is fine and the staff are very pleasant. However, the hotel needs to have some money spent on it and in my room several of the windows did not fit properly so there was excessive noise from outside. This therefore leads to the average rating. Good location and breakfast was also fine.

"Familiar hotel in Salisbury"

With a 800 years of history, Salisbury is a quiet town that you can relax and enjoy the old architect in every corner. Hotel Red Lion is a cozy hotel in the heart of Salisbury, when you enter the hotel you get the feeling of going back in time. It suite very well with the town's history. For a different to other small hotels in England, they are offering you the breakfast buffet that suites for everyone's taste. Excellent service, service minded staff.

"Lunch in the lounge - would have liked to stay"

Went here for lunch. Gloriously old hotel brought up to date but retaining the trappings of bygone glory. Lovely courtyard with tables but it was raining so sat in the lounge. Had a selection of four starters in a sort of self-styled tapas: ham hock with homemade piccalilli, wild mushroom and mozzarella arancini, divine duck dumplings in tempura batter with aioli and hoisin sauce, garlic and rosemary baked camembert with a home made roll. Coffee to drink. The bill was £30. We felt we'd had a good meal, elegantly presented.

"A comfortable and pleasant stay"

The Hotel is in a great location being close to the City centre. It is a very nice looking period building with an enclosed courtyard which is a very nice space. There's space for unloading at the front of the Hotel and parking in a public car part at the rear - no problem with this. I had a double room, which wasn't large, but clean and comfortable. The bed was great. Bathroom was functional and clean although the shower could have been a little more vigorous! The restaurant was warm space and the food excellent. Also had a great breakfast.

"A better best western"

28/09/2015

Ive stayed in a few best westerns and generally haven't been particularly impressed, but selected this one anyway as it was really close to bars and restaurants etc. I was pleased I had, it's very characterful and the superior room very clean and spacious, with a beautiful bathroom. One of my husbands funny quirks to determine the likelihood of staying in a hotel again is 1) if there are biscuits on the rooms tea tray and 2) how good they are. And I'm pleased to say the red lion passed with flying colours with not only yummy little shortbread and flapjack bites but a cafetière and 'real' coffee. The bar area and courtyard were lovely for a nightcap, although it would have been good to know that the 11pm closing time only applied to non residents before rushing back to catch last orders.

"OK but wouldn't rush to stay here again"

Would like to give a higher rating as the hotel has character and some nice features, but it felt like it could do with some better staffing and investment to bring it up to scratch - we were unimpressed at not being able to check in at the stated time, as the room wasn't ready.

Great hotel and location in the city centre. You Can walk straight out to restaurants and shops. Clean room, comfy bed, extra put up bed placed in room for 10 year old son. Had room only option as enjoyed eating locally in town! We will be back.
