I booked the Merchant house hotel just for one night for our Wedding Anniversary, we haven't been to Salisbury before. I contacted the hotel the week before and booked an early check in which was £20 but well worth it, I also asked if they could get some flowers for the room for my wife. Check in was 12 noon but we arrived around 10.30 and was allowed to secured a space in the car park. I booked a room on the internet called the Nelson Room. On check in we were given our key card, the layout of the hotel is long corridors and steps up and down. We found our room and on entering were pleasantly surprised, it was a large room, lovely bed, coffee and tea facilities. There was a large tv on the wall. As it was our anniversary the bed was covered with petals and there was chocolates and wine on the table. The bathroom was very bright and clean but with a high step to get into the bathroom. All the staff were very polite. Breakfast was Buffett style and on entering dining room was escorted to a table asked if we wanted tea or coffee and also what type of eggs we would like as they cook them to order. Everything was perfect and we will definitely go back.
Good location but very noisy- do not get room 211
Good location. Much to praise but our room was very small with a thick duvet and a small window so very stuffy. The aircon/heating unit was very near the bed and we did not fancy having it on all night. Very pleasant staff and good breakfast.
Great location and walkability. Staff/Service: Welcoming and warm, Cheewan at reception was lovely! We had drove straight out from a morning arrival at Heathrow, my husband was not feeling well and the hotel had been fully booked the night before. They were able to rush our room for 12pm (check-in is 3pm) for £ 20 GBP. Guestroom: we booked a standard and had requested ground floor, this was met. Very clean, spacious and adequately furnished, bed was comfortable. Coffee pot/kettle in-room with accompaniments. Bathroom amenities was very lacking; only one pump dispenser of Bath gel/shampoo (combined), no conditioner. One pump dispenser on the wall by the sink of hand wash (both dispensers 1/3 full, no hand/body lotion. Plenty of towels set on towel-warmer rack and very clean bathroom. Car park: The hotel has a small lot but we did not luck out with a spot during our stay. There are 7 spots, 3 of which are for Electric Vehicles only (beware not to park in these if your car is not EV, police will issue a violation/ticket). Because we arrived on a Sunday, street parking was free and we were able to park right up front and good until 8am the next morning. There are two public parking lots nearby, the next day we parked in the Brown St. Car park around the corner. There is a machine that you can pay with a credit card or you can download the MiPermit app which worked great for me (iPhone) and used Apple pay with it. The Restaurant: Warm and friendly service, the coffee was great and the breakfast buffet was delicious (eggs are made to order). Overall a great stay that embodied the mood and flavor of this medieval city. The Merchant's House (a Best Western Signature brand) would be my choice again.
Had a one night Friday stay to visit relations nearby. Lovely staff, great hotel and bar etc. Room very clean and fresh. Breakfast lovely - eggs cooked fresh. there is a carpark at rear of hotel. It is camera operated by separate firm. I have a parking fine as I was deemed to be in the space of an EV Charging Bay. The staff very kindly went outside to check where I parked but advised me to be safe and move to nearby carpark. I was only there 12 minutes but they won't rescind the fine so be careful!
Comfortable and clean room, very friendy and helpful staff. The shower was over the bath, but worked well just the same. The only thing I would say is that where a shower is over the bath, from a safety viewpoint there should be a grab rail of some kind on the wall. Breakfast was great, with freshly cooked eggs. I prefer my eggs scrambled, but usually on a breakfast buffet they become rubbery, so these were a real treat. They will also make omelettes.
Nice little hotel in Salisbury city centre with friendly and helpful staff, good food and clean rooms.
Immaculately clean hotel. Very central for Salisbury town and Cathedral. Warm quiet room. Comfy bed. Very clean bathroom with lovely towels. Great value. Friendly staff. We loved this hotel. ❤️
So lovely-home from home luxury.
We stayed in a superior room for 1 night B&B. We've stayed in a lot of hotels, including another one in Salisbury which was twice the price but this was just as good. Service was excellent by all staff. Breakfast was good with a choice of fresh cooked eggs and a random indian omelette option which my husband had and really enjoyed it. A voucher for a free drink in the bar was a lovely touch too.
A great short stay in Salisbury at the 4 star Merchants House Hotel. Well located. I had a single room that was compact but I had asked for a quiet room so located at the back of the listed historical building. The room was comfortable and clean. All of the items in the room worked. Staff were friendly and breakfast was good.
We stayed 2 nights, room small but comfortable with a good bathroom and spotless. All three receptionists we encountered were lovely and friendly, and the lady who booked us in (weds 14 jan 2025) recommended two restaurants and both were excellent. Central location, just a few minutes walk from centre.
Had a lovely one-night stay here. Staff were really friendly and helpful on arrival, rooms were clean and quiet, and breakfast the next morning was excellent. The location is great - everything you'd want to see in Salisbury is walkable. Would definitely stay again!
I have stayed at the merchant house hotel twice now and would highly recommend. The staff are so welcoming and friendly and the room is super comfortable and clean. Nothing is too much trouble. The hotel offers a great range of drinks at the bar and we had a great buffet breakfast with freshly cooked eggs and plenty of hot and cold options. I would definitely stay here again!
Very good location, really friendly and professional staff and great value for money. Our room (101) was not huge but it was big enough for a short stay. We will definitely stay here again if we ever return to the lovely city of Salisbury
Centrally located with its own car park which is first come, first served. Room was fine, but nowhere to put clothes except for a small wardrobe with hangers. Only tiny desk drawers, so we were literally living out of a suitcase. There was plenty of room to put a small chest of drawers, so why is it missing? Lost one star as a result. Otherwise excellent staff and breakfast.
We had a pleasant Sunday night stay at the Merchants House Hotel, despite a rainy weekend. We booked one of the larger rooms via Best Western and got a very good deal with free breakfast, and the five stars takes that into account (if we had paid more four stars might have more appropriate as the décor and amenities do not put the hotel in the upmarket / luxury bracket). The location is good. It is very central, which we wanted as there are plenty of restaurants nearby. Presumably because it was a Sunday evening there were spaces left in the car park, even though we didn't check in until late afternoon. Staff were friendly and helpful. The room had oak beams and was fairly large, clean, comfortable, quiet, again as we wanted, being at the back by the car park (we saw that rooms on the street face a nightclub which might be an issue for those). Despite the character of the oak beams, the décor otherwise felt basic and old-fashioned. Other hotels we have stayed in have modernised to a higher standard while keeping the character of the old building. For example, the bath/shower combo, though fine, with anti-slip mat, felt dated, and the toggle that activated the shower was difficult to pull up. There was no fridge. It had its own door to the courtyard, which was rather dark, making it hard to see the lock – a small external movement activated light would have been good. The furniture felt outdated. The breakfast was fine, with eggs cooked to order, though there might have been more fresh fruit. We didn't use the bar as we just missed last orders, but it had a few people there at that time and looked not a bad place for a last drink before bed. A bonus was that we asked if it was possible to leave the car until lunchtime, as we were visiting the Cathedral late in the morning, and were told that was fine (later would have been an issue given arrivals). A word of warning to those that might park in the street outside overnight – the parking is charged after 8am, which one couple at breakfast became suddenly aware of rather too late.
Just returned from staying a couple of nights in the Courtyard Suite, didn't see a huge amount of the hotel as our room fed right off Reception but everywhere we did see was spotlessly clean and nicely decorated. The staff were very friendly and helpful, Allwyn was particularly welcoming and we promise to stay again over a weekend when we can savour his Indian cooking! Just a few small points which stopped our stay from being excellent.....no water or glasses provided in the room, biscuits would be a nice touch with the tea/coffee facilities, and our room had no wardrobe or clothes hanging furniture! We will however, gladly come stay again...
We received a very warm welcome. The hotel itself felt like a maze. Only 8 carpark spaces at the back - first come, first serve. Thankfully we were able to park for free in front of the hotel on Saturday night and Sunday, but between 8am and 6pm on other days, you can only stay there for an hour. The room was very basic but fine. It was a shame we didn't have any electric sockets near the bedside tables. The bed was too hard for our liking. The shower was in the bath. Soap provided and the towels were great.
Location atmosphere room wete lovely and clean and good size staff were excellent breakfast was brilliant ate in the restaurant which brilliant cannot fault
Stayed for 2 nights in the new Courtyard Suite, which was beautiful. Very spacious with separate lounge, bedroom was at the back which was great so very quiet and peaceful. Leading from the bedroom was a private terrace which would be perfect on a sunny day. Buffet breakfast was lovely eggs cooked to order, everything was cooked perfectly and well presented. All the staff were friendly, helpful and attentive which made a perfect stay. Will be returning
Stayed for 2 nights in a twin room. There is no opportunity to upgrade to a better room if you want a twin, but overall the room was fine. Very clean, spacious enough and good value for the price we paid. Breakfast was better than I expected for a small hotel. Very friendly staff. Free secure parking. Only downside ( we were on the ground floor) is harsh outside lighting directly into the room and noise from 7am as the bins are collected. Overall a good stay and would recommend this hotel if you want a well-located good value option.
Great welcome on arrival, and excellent service throughout - domestics staff, reception, bar and restaurant. Very nice breakfast freshly cooked. Convenient location Nice Indian meals served Thurs-sat evening. Great chef and such good value. Nice bedroom and comfortable beds.
Stayed for 3 nights our first visit we were offered a free drink at the bar, the bedroom was spotlessly clean, restaurant very clean run by chef Allwyn, breakfast by Allwyn excellent buffet with hot and cold food and Allwyns signature breakfast omelette excellent! Allwyn's restaurant he owns and cooks a wonderful variety of signature Indian dishes starters, main meals and desserts all fantastic. My husband and I enjoyed a three course meal and will definitely revist Allwyns restaurant again
This is a listed character property with beams and creaky floors a-plenty. Our room was front facing and above the restaurant, which meant it was a bit noisy. The windows could not be opened for ventilation, due to the fixed secondary double glazing. The bathroom was the second smallest I have ever used, anywhere in Europe; hard to enter and exit the bath without bumping my head on the sloping ceiling, and requiring feats of gymnastics to reach the toilet roll holder. The clothes hanging alcove was inadequate, made worse by the presence of an ironing board c/w steam iron (which dripped dirty water onto my shoes while we slept). Staff were helpful, restaurant and bar were very good. Breakfast was plentiful and tasty. Aircon worked, but bleeped intermittently.
We really enjoyed our visit to the lovely little city of Salisbury. The Merchant's House is very centrally located and within easy walking distance of the city's many attractions. There is an abundance of coffee shops, pubs and restaurants. We were not able to get a space in the small hotel car park but there is a multi storey about 3 minutes walk away which costs £9 a day We were in room 217 which was clean and comfortable with a decent bathroom Unfortunately the AC system was very close to our window and it was very noisy until the early hours We had conversations with two of the receptionists, the barman and one of the cleaners. All were very friendly and welcoming
What a jewel in the crown amazing hotel in the city centre great rooms lovely and clean you don't want for nothing The staff are amazing a special thanks to Darren for making our stay like home from home it's a shame there are not more Darren's in this world Don't miss out on their restaurant which is fantastic the resident chef Joseph is just simply a great cook and guy His Indian origins show right through in his amazing evening menu which he has designed himself if you get too meet Joseph you want be disappointed he really is a top guy with classy cooking skills that would satisfy all palates If you visit Salisbury do not miss out on this lovely little hotel !!!!
We stayed here just one night, but if we come back we'd stay here again. We had a car and were lucky enough to be in one of the rooms off the back courtyard right next to the car park for the hotel. The car park is very small and seems to be first come, first served. So just luck of the draw if you can get in. This hotel is located in a good spot to walk around Salisbury. Our room was not very big, but big enough to repack 3 large suitcases during our stay. Everything was clean and the staff were friendly. We stayed here to do an after hours Stonehenge inside the circle tour on our last night before heading the Heathrow the next morning. We misjudged how much we'd want to see in Salisbury so may be back!
Checked in to the Alfred room for one night, which I believe is one of the highest category rooms in the hotel inventory. The room is a bit weird, with a creepy painting next to the bed, and a very small window in the corner at floor level so very little natural light gets into the room. The bathroom they show in their website for the room is not accurate, it's not the real bathroom you get which is extremely cramped and the shower has no easy way in and out and is health and safety risk with no handrail - elderly people be warned! Also while you shower the fan that's right next to your face hasn't been cleaned and makes you want to move your face far away from it. The bed itself seemed a bit small but worst of all it has a footboard - so if you're 6 foot then you will wake up in the middle of the night when you roll over and hit your feet on the solid wood footer. But actually you probably won't be asleep because every few minutes the A/C in the room makes an awful shuddering noise that will keep you from getting sleep. We were also really disappointed with the breakfast, seemed impossible to get over easy eggs, had to send them back to be replaced with equally over cooked eggs. The staff all stand in the kitchen with the chef and chat, meanwhile the tables are covered in used plates that are not being cleaned. All in all for the £250 we paid for the room and breakfast it's very poor and I would not go back
Fabulous museum displayed as a working homeof the time. . Authentic and unusual artifacts . and things to read and touch. Friendly and helpful guides and unusual and interesting facts. Well worth a visit. Lovely town for lunch and a bit of shopping.
Great place to stay, 3 minute walk to the markets, 15 minute walk to the cathedral, and just down the street to the main strip. But right across from a noisey club, so on Friday and Saturday nights, it is noisy. Rooms are on the small size.......
The hotel enjoys a great city centre location close to shops, bars, restaurants and attractions, the building is well presented and reception staff were friendly and efficient. We were offered an upgraded room type (from standard to superior) for £5 per night and accepted. The room was clean and tastefully decorated, that being said however I am at a loss to understand what if anything extra the ‘superior' room had in terms of features and I am left with the feeling that they tricked me into an extra spend of £5 per night. The hotel advertises free on site parking and while this is technically true they have only 9 spaces for 37 rooms on a first come first served basis. If you are lucky enough to grab a space just leave your car there until checkout and walk / bus / cab everywhere because your space will be gone within minutes. Do not consider this hotel if you are planning to drive, it is a nightmare. The room had almost no storage space, perhaps 6 hangers on a rail, no shelves and no drawers, we had to live out of our cases, likewise there was a single tiny shelf in the bathroom but nowhere near enough for 2 adults. The bed was incredibly uncomfortable almost to the point of painful and the room was s noisy with creaking floorboards from above whenever the guest in that room moved and loud whining banging from pipes when they used the shower or toilet.
The young woman who checked us in was so rude and unpleasant that I was shocked. She was so unwelcoming. And totally disrespectful and unhelpful. The next morning Aga, a different woman, was working the desk. She was so pleasant and helpful. The exact opposite of the first person. The place is clean but leaves much to be desired. The switch for the lamp on the nightstand is behind the nightstand and is very difficult to get to. The outlet we used to charge our phones was also low to the floor and partly behind the nightstand. I had to get on my knees and reach back a ways to get to it. Finally, there is a big old tub in the bathroom. Taking a shower in the tub is almost treacherous.
Six months before our visit, I asked for my booking of two rooms for two nights to be moved forward by one week. I was advised that there would be a £30 admin fee. Really?! The same rooms were available, I had given six months notice and all it required was a few clicks on the computer keyboard. It was only a tiny fraction of the total cost of our stay. All I got by way of explanation was 'hotel policy.' 'Customer policy': advise hotel of practices which are unnecessary, unwarranted and unwelcoming. We will return to Salisbury but not to the Merchant's House.
I stay at this hotel probably three or four times a year when I visit friends. It's fine, the bedrooms are pretty reasonable and I get a good nights sleep which is really what it's all about. The bathrooms however, remind me of my Grandmother's bathroom in her council house in Liverpool. She passed away in the mid 90's so that'll give you a general ideal of what they are like. Luxury, they are not. Cheap they assuredly are. The cooked breakfasts are good - if you're willing to pay for them - and the jovial chef is a treat, although not after a night of drinking local beers. Which brings me to the service. Do I really need to remind the receptionist that you're in the service industry and not running a borstal? I accidently booked the wrong month when I booked my latest trip and immediately called to bring attention to my mistake and correct it, happily they did this but as a 'one off courtesy' and not without me being severly admonished for my stupidity. I was also caught up in the Heathrow closure this week and my flight from Los Angeles was turned around mid flight and sent back to California, I know what you're thinking, you'd rather be in California than Salisbury but I really did want to be in Salisbury to see my lovely friends. I called to let the hotel know and to ask if I could perhaps move my booking to another day when I could finally get there. Absolutely not! was the response. You were already given the courtesy of fixing your mistake once and now you expect to play the system again? I'm sorry but you're not going to and you're not getting a refund! I said, I wasn't asking for a refund but given my rather unfortunate situation, I was just asking if it would be possible to move my booking date... But no, I was met with a stern and cold, I'm sorry these are the rules. Well, I have a new rule... My new rule is not to stay here anymore.

Additionally, hot and cold beverages are part of the package. Upon reviewing your reservation, I noted that your original booking was non-refundable. However, our receptionist was more than happy to assist you in rescheduling your reservation at no extra charge after consulting with management, despite the terms and conditions of your booking. When your reservation was moved again, we were unable to treat it as a flexible booking, as it would not have been fair to other guests who booked at a higher rate to secure additional flexibility.
