Where to stroll in Amboise?
A royal town par excellence, Amboise draws visitors with its sumptuous château, built under the reigns of Francis I, Louis XII and Charles VIII. This site is a must during your stay, as much for its architecture as for its history. The château’s chapel also houses the tomb of the illustrious Leonardo da Vinci. Continue your journey through time with the Château du Clos Lucé and the Leonardo da Vinci Park, to better immerse yourself in the artist’s world. The park “Le jardin de Léonard” deserves a stop to fully appreciate the genius’s various models.
Which kings lived at the Château d'Amboise?
The château’s royal destiny truly began in 1434, when Charles VII acquired it. His son Louis XI then transformed this medieval fortress into a permanent residence for his wife Charlotte of Savoy.
The château reached its peak under Charles VIII, who was born there in 1470 and spent most of his life there until his tragic death in 1498. After him, Henry II and Catherine de’ Medici left a deep mark on the château’s history by raising their children there, including the future Francis II.
The Chanteloup Pagoda
The Chanteloup Pagoda will literally enchant you. From its 44-metre height, the pagoda offers a grandiose panorama over the entire Loire Valley and the Amboise forest. While the small Chinese garden delights those who love contemplation, the old-fashioned games make for relaxing family moments, before setting off for a boat ride on the Grande Pièce d’Eau
During a stay in a hotel in Amboise, history and architecture enthusiasts can finally satisfy their thirst for culture and discovery, as there are so many incredible sites. This is notably the case of the Château Gaillard, dreamed up by Charles VIII, and its Pacello gardens. The royal estate can be visited as a family among its great flowerbeds, medieval bakery, olfactory grotto and hothouses. Enjoy a sensory and initiatory journey like no other, in a lost Paradise born of the Renaissance.
Finally, head to the Hôtel Morin museum, the Mini-Châteaux park, the Clock Tower, the Saint-Florentin church and the Saint-Jean chapel, if you have more free time. And to finish on an original note, the fountain “Aux cracheurs, aux drôles, au génie” will spark the curiosity of young and old alike. This monumental work by Max Ernst brings together nearly 10 sculptures and pays tribute to Touraine and to the famous artist Leonardo da Vinci in a playful and poetic way.
