Description

The Grand Hotel de l'Opera, symbol of "art de vivre" is nowadays one of the most famous hotels in Toulouse. Located on the Capitole square, in the heart of the "pink city", the history of the hotel stands among the oldest of Toulouse. In the 17th century, in the midst of the Renaissance period, this nice monument sheltered a monastery. The 1789's events disturbed its quietness. The building was change into the "Lycee de la Revolution", the school of revolution. New metamorphosis a few years later when the Opera Dance School of Toulouse makes it its own. In this new designation, the Grand Hotel de l'Opera tribute to its talented tenants who only had to cross the street to perform on stage at the "Theatre du Capitole". In 1980, the amazing building is refurbished as a sumptuous 4 Star boutique hotel combining the mobility and the charm of Toulouse mansions. Ever since, the reputation of the Grand Hotel de l'Opera is established. Our hotel continues to warmly welcome guests from all over the world. In 1996, a fire destroyed no less than 36 rooms. Two years later, Rouleau Hotellerie acquires the Grand Hotel de l'Opera, gives it a fully new direction and restores the hotel to its full splendor. The interior design was magnified by Elisabeth Drapeau. The entire team is looking forward to welcoming you soon to our peaceful haven facing the Capitole.

"Two stars at best. Seen better days."
ijloewy, 05 Avril 2024

We stayed here because Frommers travel book made it sound 5 star. Not really. First of all it is very hard to get to. It took us two trips around the city to get to it because the entrance was blocked. We had to stop in the street and unload under the watchful and displeased eye of a police officer and then walk down a long walkway to reach the entrance. Then I had to leave my wife with the luggage while I parked the car in an underground parking lot across the street. While I was gone, the hotel manager sent us to a room on the first floor near the stairway, which was very noisy with people going up and down the stairs. The only view was of the apartment across the alleyway, which probably was for,the best since there was no AC and we had to sleep with windows open. At least the bed was reasonably comfortable. The room had a walk in shower, but it was not well designed and was a bit slippery. The room also was very dark and lacked outlets in which to plug phones and other devices. The hotel was reasonably well-placed for touring the central part of the city on foot, but not for driving. When it was time to check out I had to drive 20 minutes around the whole city to get back to the hotel from the garage exit down the one way street. The breakfast buffet was middling at best. No eggs to order, only pre-cooked scrambled eggs and a poor selection of bread, rolls and pastries. The front desk staff was aloof at best and snooty and rude when not aloof. The only bright spot was the one guy who carried the luggage and seemed to perform as jack of all trades at the hotel. Something didn't work, he fixed it. Needed more bottled water, he brought it. Asked for more towels, he delivered them. There are more modern and better hotels in the city. In the end we decided to leave a day early and move on.

"Olde Worlde courtesy and modern comfort"
Dorucak, 01 Février 2024

Traditional and dignified hotel in the heart of Toulouse by the grand Capitole square. Staff are multilingual and assiduous in their hospitality. The rooms are furnished in warm colours and in reminiscent of old theatres, as is appropriate to the proximity of the opera house. There's no restaurant in the building but a few metres across the courtyard is a smart-looking place - we didn't eat there but the menu did look enticing. Generous breakfasts were served in the hotel. The building wasn't bang up to date in some ways - a few people might baulk at the small lift - but that added to the character. All in all, a welcome change from the interchangeable corporate-focused tower blocks run by many hotel operators .

"Fantastic hotel in an amazing location!"
Fi0na_1976, 10 Janvier 2024

My flight was cancelled, so had to book this hotel last minute and what an amazing find. After a very stressful few hours at the airport, I arrived to the most wonderful staff who made light of the situation and instantly made me feel better and at ease. They were an absolute delight. It was late, so I didn't get to experience dinner, just drinks in the bar, where the excellent service continued. My room was very spacious and really comfortable. Just what I needed after a very stressful day. The next day, I left my luggage behind reception on check out to explore the city centre on the doorstep. Thank you to all involved and apologies for only just getting around to leaving this review. I would love to return!

"Better than expected"
marcmywords, 15 Décembre 2023

The location of the hotel, as we knew, is one of the best for central Toulouse and easy to travel to and from in public transport. It's an old style hotel and it may well be in need of a little updating in one or two areas. We did not eat here so can't comment on the food quality, there are so many places in the immediate area to eat and drink. The room was not huge but big enough for us for 4 days. The bed was very comfortable and the room warm. All the facilities were spotlessly clean and the very best thing about this hotel is the lovely people who work here. Thank you

"Highly Recommend"
Passport09586085172, 26 Octobre 2023

We had a wonderful stay to attend a week long conference. The staff was friendly and always helpful. Our room was spacious, comfortable, quiet, and immaculate. We loved the comfortable bar and delicious breakfast. As close to perfect as hotels get.

"Perfect location in a grand hotel to explore Toulouse!"
Grahange, 03 Octobre 2023

Beautiful grand old hotel which takes you out of the hustle and bustle into a calm and beautiful setting! Rooms were spacious and comfortable. We only had an overnight stop without breakfast so can't comment on the this but if the helpful and excellent staff are anything to go by, it can only be good. Location is fantastic - right in the hub of things but so so quiet!!

"Pleasant enough in a great location"
PeterD808, 19 Septembre 2023

The hotel is very nice, our room was excellent; the reception staff are very friendly; the location is perfect. However, don't rely on being able to unload your luggage “in the hotel porch” as they suggest, for the entirety of our stay the access to this “porch” was completely blocked by vans belonging to another establishment resulting in us having to lug very heavy bags from the underground car park. Also, they desperately need a service lift, we kept colliding with housekeeping staff, and the only bar is completely lacking in atmosphere.

"Excellent staff nice hotel in the center of Toulouse."
392luis55, 31 Août 2023

Staff was excellent and professional. The room was big clean and confortable. Situation of the hotel perfect, right to the place of capitole I definitely recommend this hotel quality and price reasonable.

"A beautiful hotel but the customer service is very poor."
Luchonlady, 23 Août 2023

We love this hotel it really is our favourite in Toulouse, the rooms are beautiful and very romantic but the personnel let themselves down big time. We just booked for a fourth time, I have left them very good reviews and I asked if a discount would be available, they offered me four euros off, that is not customer loyalty in any shape or form. We were also hanging around for our room to be ready for quite a while, no apologies, not even a glass of water offered, it was 40 degrees in Toulouse yesterday...I then asked if I could have breakfast complimentary as a gesture of goodwill , a very stern no was the response. They reception people seem very preoccupied, take a very long time to answer messages and I was put on hold for a long time when I called and then no one called back when they said they would. The communal areas are beautiful but they have no life! No one sits in the bar, lovely tables outside, not used, the breakfast room is bleak, these are the negatives that if improved would warrant the four stars for this hotel. The big guns running this hotel really need to think about customer loyalty.

"Cozy and very Nice hotel "
929zulmiras, 25 Juillet 2023

A cozy and very Nice hotel. Great staff and breakfast. The bathroom.is also good, but there were Ink stains in the mini sofa in the bedroom. Still, well-located place close to the tour points. I recommend it.

"Our Night at the Grand Hotel de l'Opera "
Phil T, 11 Avril 2023

Only in town for one night but room & bathroom were large & clean. Location across from Capitole. Staff very friendly & several were fluent in Spanish & English. Enjoyed late night drinks. Staff called stores in area on our behalf and located a specific gift that we had trouble finding.

"Charming hotel with charming staff"
krisskjellerup, 20 Mars 2023

This was our fourth visit to this hotel - our first was in 2016. With each visit we discover another reason to return. The rooms are lovely, the staff is very helpful and the location is perfect to explore the city.

"Unpleasant stay. No hot water"
L8032FNs, 09 Novembre 2022

We arrived on a Friday. The hot water was out and the staff said it was impossible to repair over the week. The safe was also broken. No refund was offered. There was minimal staff and no help available for luggage. The hotel access is via a long passageway making handling luggage very cumbersome and inconvenient. It is very hard to have taxi pick-ups because of the traffic.

"VERY, VERY NICE HOTEL"
Terry M, 06 Novembre 2022

This was a beautiful hotel. The rich lobby with blue velvet seats was a fine first impression. There was an affable chap at reception for check in, all going smoothly. My room was rich in shades of red, the walls covered with a sponge-like tapestry effect with scenes of trees, churches and farming. There are two steps in the room from the bathroom area down to the bed so be mindful of that. There is a desk and chair. There were not many electrical outlets but managed. Coffee and tea making facilities were welcome. There is a minibar if so inclined. The bathroom glistens with marble. There was a bar of soap for the sink; a squeeze bottle, the shower. Not a big fan of non-enclosed showers, same likely accounting over time for the damage to the back of the door. Had a chuckle at a QR code having been left on the right end of the sink. The wifi was quite strong as long as you did not try to upload two pix at once. The surrounding area is good for touring, shopping and restaurants. The breakfast room was bright, white and glassy. The fare was fine. Parking can be dreadful at the nearby Capitol lot. The hotel has an arrangement there for a discount if you give the ticket to them on check out. Overall, it is easy to see why the hotel is in the Best Western premier collection. I would rate a notch below a luxury hotel, likely better value. Unfortunately my efforts to upload some pix the next night were futile.

"Too Hot to Handle"
sharon c, 08 Octobre 2022

This was a charming hotel in an area close to shops, dining, buzzing with activity for all ages. The hotel is dark wood with toile everywhere. Bathrooms were updated and clean. Mattress was comfortable. There was only problem and it was a big problem … the air conditioning did not work and our room was hot and muggy. There are no screens in the window to keep mosquitos out, plus there was loud talking, bottles being thrown out, and smoking. So the windows had to stay shut. We asked for help and they brought a little fan in the room to move the hot air around. They said the AC was fine!. When we checked out, we mentioned it to the desk clerk and she said they always turn off the ac in October and we're we're “lucky” to get a fan. She was pretty snotty. So there you go, if you can handle sleeping in a hot muggy room, you'll love it

"Great Find"
Chrises, 05 Octobre 2022

Grand Hotel L'Opera is a great place to stay while in Toulouse. The Location is perfect for easy walking access to the old town. The staff is top notch - so helpful and knowledgeable about the area. The room was comfortable, super quiet and very large.

"Elegant, Old World feel in the heart of Toulouse"
thechronictraveller, 30 Septembre 2022

This place feels like walking back to the time of Marie Antoinette...without the guillotine. It's soft colours, cushions and a grand spiral staircase in the middle of the lobby. The room had a decor to match, with reds all around and padded walls. Although the room was a bit worn around the edges, it was still quirky, comfortable and quite romantic. I loved the charm of this place!

"Old Toulouse classic"
Andywoo1, 17 Septembre 2022

Appreciated that this hotel was in the center.......but.......access was hard...down a small access way only room for one car and hard to get into with rental car......no rooms with view to square.....essentially close to the square but not facing it and most rooms inward facing so not a great view.......nice breakfast......friendly staff.....no extras to speak of........rooms of average size.....average decor.........

"Lovely hotel, charming staff"
Passport57946683001, 16 Septembre 2022

We stayed here for two nights whilst settling our daughter into Toulouse university. The front desk staff were so friendly and helpful. The hotel has a great location right in the main square of Toulouse. We were upgraded to a better room which was a lovely surprise. The room was beautiful and comfortable. My only slight criticism was that because its an old building the floor boards were quite creaky and we could hear the people in the room above walking about during the night - but maybe they were just very stomping guests . Highly recommend this charming hotel, thank you for looking after us so well.

"Beautiful Victorian Hotel in the City Center"
Jed P, 31 Août 2022

The Hotel has 18th Century Charm. The Receptions Staff was wonderful in moving my room to a higher floor due to a miscommunication when I made my reservation. The Room was Serviced everyday. The only thing which was a little disappointing was if you wanted to check in before 3:30, it would cost 35 euro.

"Great classic hotel in the Capitol area of Toulouse"
MequonMaizy, 24 Août 2022

Very nice hotel in a very interesting area of Toulouse. Great air conditioning in the room and very responsive hotel staff. The front desk staff were excellent. My only minor issue was that on two of the 7 days we had to ask the cleaning staff to replace our coffee ingredients for our coffee maker (didn't realize we had no coffee until each of those two mornings when we woke up). Other than this minor issue (which the front desk rectified immediately) we love this place!

"Beautiful!"
Roberta M, 06 Août 2022

Absolutely beautiful hotel. Perfect location, clean, charming, and very helpful staff. Staff spoke English and gave us great suggestions and directions. The Pink City is lovely, and there is plenty to see in walking distance of the hotel. Our room was so pretty, air conditioning worked well. Great places to dine nearby, but really enjoyed drinks and chacuterie in the elegant hotel bar. Highly recommend it.

"Stop over en route to Carmargue"
V4023MWsusans, 20 Juillet 2022

A Lovley ornate hotel. Immerse yourself in true French indulgence. Staff were so friendly, an absolutely delightful stay. Comfortable, clean and cool. Great breakfast, relaxed bar area and private outside space to enjoy. Close to parking and the main square. Enjoy!

"Average."
Z4724UAjenniferl, 18 Juillet 2022

I arrived at 12:30 and was told if I wanted to check in before 3:30 that I would need to pay 30 euros even though there was a room available. ???? This is a new experience to be asked to pay for a two hour early check out for something that costs them nothing. I understand late check out fees, but this seems gratuitous. The person who was the employee checking me in seemed extremely nice and very apologetic about this after she checked with I think the manager. It's unfortunate, but since the service was nice I would give them three stars. The lobby is nice, the bed comfortable, the room was interesting due to the vintage design. The location was good. They did get a taxi for me and tried to save me money by contacting another guest to see if they wanted a ride share. That was great. They said that they would make a reservation at a restaurant in their hotel. When I arrived at the restaurant, they told me that no reservation had been made but I was early in the evening so they got me in regardless. They tried but this stay was average.

"Lack of staff"
annemarieir, 03 Juillet 2022

Disappointing visit. We booked the hotel well in advance but the hotel neglected to send us the email with an explanation of how to arrive by car. Arrival was extremely complicated and made more so by the young man who eventually came out of the hotel after I phoned them. There were only 2 staff on duty and unfortunately the famous Alexandre was not one of them. The female receptionist insisted she couldn't help us drive to the hotel although I told her in French and English on the phone that we were just opposite at McDonald's. She then insisted that we had been emailed directions and in discovering that we hadn't she then sent them after we checked in. Such a pity. We missed our dinner reservation despite arriving in the Capitol an hour beforehand ! The hotel has a good location and vast empty unpeopled spaces perhaps due to there only being 2 staff members on duty . It's the people who make a hotel visit special but that was totally lacking for us.

"Can't wait to be back!"
Zoë M, 26 Juin 2022

I had one night in Toulouse before leaving France to go back home to the US and wanted to book somewhere special (because I was traveling with my grandmother) and also wanted to book somewhere that had a good concierge service to help us organize any COVID testing we needed prior to our departure. The hotel was so prompt in following up with me and providing any and all answers I needed. They were also very kind to make sure we were in an accessible room for my grandmother, and even left a lovely note and treat for her birthday. The beauty of the hotel really swept her away, she was so in awe and happy to be there. We had our last dinner in France at one of the restaurants downstairs. Everything was so lovely. Cant wait to visit again!

"Classic 4 Star Hotel with 5 Star Service"
kip136, 16 Juin 2022

First I arrived at the hotel and Hotels.com had booked the room with the wrong description. I was expecting a room with a bathtub, and that was not what awaited me. The front desk associate, Alexandre, seeing the problem when he checked on line, immediately found me a different room. He came up to the room and took my bags and escorted me to the other wing of the building. I took the elevator and he took the stairs. He explained that the hotel was two old buildings joined together, giving me some of the history going back six hundred years. Fascinating backdrop to hear the hotel's storied history. The impeccable service from Alexandre set the tone for a wonderful stay. The hotel is NOT one of those modern, sterile environments. It has the genuine feel of a classic European hotel. My room was lovely. The white marble bathroom and the luxurious tub were amazing. The hotel was on the main square, Place de la Capitole, near shopping, museums, and walks along the river. I'll be returning I hope in 2024 for the reopening of the main museum. I will only stay at the Hotel de l'Opera. And I hope Alexandre, Laura, and Anna are there when I return.

"I feel conflicted slightly"
jenniferwL7337GF, 02 Mai 2022

I feel conflicted in my review. The hotel exterior is beautiful very imposing , and the entrance to reception is very pretty typically french. Ideal to be in the centre of a very busy city. The reason I am conflicted is because there is a member of staff who really stood out over and above the actual stay or maybe my review could have been three star had he not been there to make our stay much better. Alexander we met the first night. He was fantastic. Nothing was any trouble for him. A kind and genuine person, who you can see has a passion for customer service. The hotel lobby and bar was pretty also, very floral, but very empty. We saw two people in the whole hotel? Seemed like the shining! The room 265 was clean, air con was good, bathroom modern, the bed was a little hard, TV had one English channel, it had everyyou needed. Just a little dated, or maybe that is just the theme. It has a great location for sight seeing. The last night we were there. Alexander was on duty, there was not anyone on the bar so he was now the bar man and on reception. It's not fair to have him doing both especially when we know his shift has finished. But once again nothing was any trouble and he made us our last drink there. What the hotel is lacking is a spa. And even their own restaurant. There is so much more that could be done here. They are lucky to have such great staff. All friendly. But our staff member of the trip was definitely Alexander. He was great!

"Big mistake !!!!"
Stephane31410, 18 Février 2022

Very disappointing stay at the Hotel !!!! Very far from value for money !!! This is not anymore the Grand Hotel de L'Opera that Toulouse could be proud of !!!! The decor is getting more old than stylish !! The service is inexistant taking into consideration the very kind members of staff at the reception !!! Well over priced either for the room than for the breakfast !!! Can not be more disappointed

"Good hotel, good staff, good location"
hilgar535, 09 Novembre 2021

We stayed 4 days for a long week-end. Nice room, good breakfast and very centric location. We could walk easily to most of the locations we wanted to visit. Plenty of shops and restaurants around, but the hotel itself is quiet.

"Lovely "Grand Olde Dame" in the heart of Toulouse"
William P, 21 Octobre 2021

This hotel brings you back a hundred years. The paintings, sketches, and photos on the walls add to the atmosphere and ambiance. It is located directly on Place du Capitole which makes it very convenient to restaurants and shopping. The bed was very comfortable and the air conditioning/heating was good. Drawback: parking is across the street in a public underground parking lot, which means you have to schlep your bags from the parking lot to the hotel. Not good, especially since the elevator in the parking area only goes to level -1, which means you have to lug your luggage up a set of stairs. Lisa in reception was friendly and awarded us an upgrade because of the problems we had with the luggage/parking capabilities. Breakfast was adequate, but not great.

"A Sad Tired Old Grande Damme"
Coastal31806287496, 21 Octobre 2021

The location of this “used to be” elegant hotel is superb on Place du Capitole, however it is showing it's age and is need of refurbishment and renovation. Lise, at Reception, is the saving grace, professional and was most helpful to assist (there are no bellmen or anyone to assist with baggage). Breakfast is adequate but not outstanding. We went out for the day and came back at 16.00h (4P) to find that our room had not been cleaned. The man at Reception was most rude when I asked to have the room cleaned and I had to negotiate to have it done right away rather than later after I rested. Recovering from COVID should be an incentive to provide great service not an excuse for downgrading what was once a great hotel (I was last here about 20 years ago).

"Best hotel on Capitol square"
zanlux, 22 Septembre 2021

This hotel is perfectly located for a visit of Toulouse : in the center and close to everything. The hotel has the charm of the old hotels but very clean and with all the modern features you would expect for a hotel of this category. Just one minor suggestion for improvement : the bottle of water in the room should be free.

"Very Good"
Escape34007, 21 Août 2021

Great hotel in a very good location . Thanks especially to Marjorie at the front desk who went out of her way to make our stay more enjoyable . Her restaurant recommendations with excellent . Many thanks we will return to a very nice and comfortable hotel

"Wonderful ambiance."
DrHappy0, 03 Février 2020

Lovely historical decor. Central location on main square. You can easily walk to museums, churches, and other attractions. Many restaurants available, the best on side streets off the main square. Subway stop is three minutes walk away.

"Brilliant hotel in the heart of Toulouse"
dsicklen, 16 Janvier 2020

A great hotel staffed by professional and friendly people. The location is perfect for central Toulouse and they take away the hassle of parking in the city. Shops and cultural sites are all a short stroll away, as are some excellent brasseries and restaurants. No question is too difficult for the staff as they will provide all of the assistance that you could require. Book direct - they appreciate it.

"Charming and picturesque "
CuriousSophia, 13 Janvier 2020

Gorgeous hotel, in the most incredible location in the centre of beautiful Toulouse. We stayed just before Christmas and the hotel is perfectly located on the main square where the Christmas market is held. The rooms are very quiet and well insulated, so we didn't hear or feel any disturbance from the crowds, we loved being so close to all the action! The rooms are plush and decorated in timeless French style with heavy drapes and thick carpets, with original artworks throughout. The bathroom was lovely, mostly marble and very clean, and I loved that the toilet was separate with proper doors, so that couples or friends travelling together can have privacy. We had a small balcony overlooking the entrance to the hotel. The view was not particularly special as we didn't face the main square, but it felt very French and relaxed. The breakfast is good with a broad selection of pastries, breads, meats, cheeses and cereals with fruits. Staff were lovely, and although some spoke very little English, we got by perfectly fine. The bar area on the ground floor is full of character and colour, as are most of the lobby spaces throughout. The antique wooden staircases are a little creaky but stunning. Overall, a very enjoyable stay, would definitely return!

"Great Location with Period Style"
OzSooty, 09 Décembre 2019

This hotel has an attractive 'old world' style and a great location right on Place du Capitole. Our Balcony Room provided plenty of space for two people and included an open verandah. The King bed was very comfortable, the curtains kept the room dark in the mornings and the room was quiet as it faced out the side of the hotel away from the square. There was a nice bathroom with a good shower. And I applaud the use of pump-bottles for the toiletries to reduce plastic waste. The hotel has a lift from the foyer, but there were two small steps on our floor between the lift door and our room. We didn't use the hotel's breakfast room during our stay, and while there is no restaurant in the hotel, there is a restaurant and brasserie right outside the entrance (and despite these two having a very similar name to the hotel, I do not believe they are part of it). There are many other dining options in the Place du Capitole and others within an easy walk. The hotel's bar area was very pleasant for a pre-dinner drink. The car entrance (which may be tight for larger cars) can be used for dropping off bags and people, but parking is provided in the underground public car park in the square. Hotel staff will park the car for you at no extra charge.

"Quirky and charming"
shane n, 01 Novembre 2019

Set right on the Place Capitole square , you get to walk to virtually all the historic sites, restaurants and the very efficient and clean metro. Friendly staff and they offer some of the best beds I have ever encountered . The front desk staff were especially helpful trying to help find vegan restaurants for me. This place is lovely
