Our hotels in Lourdes
Known throughout the world for the apparition of the Virgin Mary, Lourdes continues to attract countless visitors and pilgrims. At the foot of the Pyrenees, in south-west France, the Marian city remains a must for visiting the Grotto of Massabielle and the Sanctuaries of Our Lady of Lourdes, and for appreciating the beauty of the site.
By staying in a hotel in Lourdes, you will be immediately immersed in the story of Bernadette Soubirous and her encounter with the Blessed Virgin on 11 February 1858. But beyond the sanctuaries, Lourdes is a prime destination for visiting the Pyrenees while discovering the town's architectural heritage. So don't hesitate any longer and spend a few days of rest in south-west France, on a pilgrimage or a sightseeing trip.
Your hotel in Lourdes
A stronghold of the Midi-Pyrénées region, the Marian city is dominated by a castle dating from the Middle Ages. A Christian pilgrimage town, it attracts more than 6 million pilgrims every year. During your stay in Lourdes, it would be unthinkable to miss the sanctuary, which covers nearly 52 km and comprises 22 places of worship. Begin your ascent with the legendary Grotto of Massabielle, famous for the apparitions of the Virgin. Water from the spring feeds the sanctuary's baths as well as its fountains. Continue with the crypt and the three basilicas of Saint Pius X, Our Lady of the Rosary and the Immaculate Conception, before heading to the church of Saint Bernadette. Good to know: on evenings from April to October, a torchlight procession takes place, which enchants everyone.
Is the Grotto of Lourdes open to the public?
The Grotto of Lourdes, also known as the Grotto of Massabielle, is currently open to the public.
Visitors can access the grotto to pray, touch the rock and drink water from the fountains. Opening hours are generally from 7:45 am to 7:00 pm, but it is advisable to check the specific times, especially during pilgrimage periods.
The grotto is a place of contemplation and healing for many pilgrims. In addition to the grotto, pilgrims can also visit other points of interest in the Sanctuary of Our Lady of Lourdes, such as the baths, where the water gesture is practised daily.
A grotto, but not only
Even though the grotto and the various places of worship remain the town's main attractions, Lourdes has undeniable charm. Built around a rocky outcrop along the Gave de Pau, Lourdes offers a beautiful natural panorama. Among the walks not to be missed is the one up the Pic du Jer, which lets you take in the view from above. The Lac de Lourdes is more conducive to relaxation, before you set off on the Voie Verte des Gaves on foot or by bike, linking Lourdes to Pierrefitte-Nestalas. Finally, for art lovers, the town has many museums such as the Pyrenean Museum, the Nativity Museum, the Lourdes Museum and the Wax Museum with its 100 figures. And don't miss Bernadette's father's house, which deserves a stop, before taking a break on the Place Marcadal to admire its monumental fountain.
