I stayed at this historic mansion hotel while recovering from a back procedure I had in Germany. Great hotel! Amazing staff, breakfast rooms , beds. All superb! But the staff if so wonderful and proactively friendly! I'm still giddy from the experience!
I booked the penthouse room for two nights for our family while we were visiting for the Taylor Swift concert in Gelsenkirchen. I made our reservation nine months before our visit directly through the hotel's website. I received an email confirmation from the hotel at that time and then never received any other communication from the hotel. When we arrived we were given our key and took the elevator to the floor labeled “penthouse”—however our room was across the hall from the penthouse and instead of having a bedroom, a sitting room and a terrace with air conditioning, it was a hallway with a room with a sad sofa bed and a bedroom, no air conditioning and no terrace. When we inquired at the desk we were told we had two reservations and they canceled one of them and we would have to wait for the manager to arrive the next day. My husband asked about the air conditioner. First he was told we needed to turn the dials on the walls in the room, but that did nothing. Then we were told they would send someone to the room. The man who arrived said “this room has no air conditioning” and handed us a fan telling us the hotel was full as were all the others in the area due to the concert so basically “this is it”. When we tried to open the windows the noise from a band playing filled the room. We could either be hot or be subjected to a terrible band. By this point our daughter was crying and I was furious. I checked my email again for any correspondence from the hotel. I couldn't find anything showing a second reservation. Then I remembered seeing something about the hotel being affiliated with Best Western, so I searched for emails from Best Western. I found one that I had missed from the day before. It had a separate confirmation number and showed a lower level “superior room with double bed” and a higher rate than I had booked for the Penthouse. I called Best Western customer service and they could not explain how the room type, rate or confirmation number changed or when the change occurred. They confirmed that the only email they sent me was the one the day before check in. They called the hotel and tried to resolve the issue, but they also had no luck. I'm pretty sure someone arrived before us and got put into the penthouse and our “second reservation” was created by the hotel to move us to the room across the hall at the current higher rate. Thankfully we found an amazing room at the Residence Inn in Dortmund City and we moved there immediately. I guess with all the fans in town from across the world it was deemed acceptable to downgrade guests traveling from far away who likely would not be returning anyway. This experience made certain we will never return to this hotel.
Very nice hotel, clean and hospitable, good parking, very close to the center, the lobby was lovely as well. I would have liked to have more sockets near the bed, and more options at the bar (a cocktail, something summery, ended up with a whiskey), but it's still probably the best hotel in the area and the building is beautiful as well.
A really wonderful hotel: comfortable room, smartly furnished, beautifully maintained, great breakfast, invigorating spa, and best of all an elegant 24 hour bar manned at night by the very friendly Ülke. Highly recommended.
Overall good experience! I will definitely stay here again in the future. Best Hotel in Recklinghausen, great value for money, and exceptional service. Parking was a bit of a problem, but not a show-stopper!
Friendly and swift service. The hotel is very clean, rooms are spacious and well equiped. Good beds. Hotel is near the city centre, it only takes a 5' walk to get to the shops and restaurants. Simply the best hotel in the city.
Fabulous stay. I can't say enough about this gem of a hotel. The gorgeous architecture in a sweet town in Nord Rhein Westphalen, the exquisitely appointed, comfie rooms, wonderful staff and breakfast. My brother and mum also really enjoyed the sauna. Can't wait to visit again.
Friendly personnel and a nice atmosphere. Rooms are spacious, clean and well maintained. Good location with shops, restaurants and public transportation in a 500m radius. Probably the best hotel in the vicinity of the town's center.
Stayed again on another business trip in March. Breakfast and service excellent. Room was a ground floor room looking at the main road but was surprisingly quiet and the hotel gave me earplugs when I asked. Good location for restaurants in Recklinghausen.
I have stayed at my lovely Burg for a few months now on a long term assignment and it really has become home from home. A wonderful hotel that first and foremost impresses with the friendly attitude and professional dedication of the staff. I have met over a dozen of the hotel staff and it is remarkable how consistently delightful and helpful they all are. That really makes all the difference and is the bedrock that all the other brilliant aspects of this hotel rest on: The rooms are very generously sized and have got everything I need plus a few things that I don't need but find very charming like a free bottle of sparkling water and a rather large TVs. I also really like the small but well-equipped gym and the laundry service has been perfect, too. Finally, the breakfast is sumptuous and really well-priced. Again, the breakfast staff are highly attentive and welcoming. The hotel represents great value for money when you consider that it is right in the heart of this very pretty town and parking is no issue as there is a car park right opposite the place. As there is always room for improvement, for me personally some of the rooms are a little too large and feature bathrooms that are pretty but not as functional as I would like i.e. it takes a while for the hot water to come through. Not a huge deal but I am very grateful to the staff that they try and find me one of the smaller, slightly more modern rooms.
We lived in a quiet, nicely decorated room with a really spacious bathroom. The bed has a good quality and all is very clean. We enjoyed the phenomenal breakfast with plenty choices of cold and hot food, and we especially loved the great sauna in the Basement, which we used every day of our stay. All the staff is very friendly and helpful around the clock. This year we didn't make use of the room service or the restaurant but we know from previous years that it is also awesome. Only downside was that the bar doesn't offer cocktails and that our room was a little smallish (last year we got a suite with a sitting area for the same price and now we're spoiled ;))
This hotel is located directly in the city center with old city walls right next to it. It was once the residence of nobility and its interiors and elegant furnishings are marvelous. Overall, we enjoyed a high standard quality stay. Only thing we would change is to have the restaurant to stay open a bit later. It closes very early in the evening and when we arrived there was nothing for us to eat.
Stayed here on multiple times and will be staying again. Great location and staff and atmosphere is very good. Breakfast is excellent and the 24 hour bar is great for night latte or drink. I would opt for superior room but all are very cosy. Parking limited but access to over the road parking
We decided to stay here for a wedding, rather than staying at a friend's as we would usually do due to us having our daughter with us.The price was more than we'd usually pay for a hotel but thought we'd treat ourselves as it was a special occasion and the hotel didn't disappoint.Massive room with a beautiful bathroom and a very well working shower!Right next door is Boente's, a great bar is you fancy a drink or food. The town centre is only a short stroll away, as are plenty of amazing German bakeries!Perfect location, gorgeous hotel and not forgetting the friendly, helpful staff. It was a delight to stay here and I'm glad that we chose to.
I had a very small room (320) but most trips here I have had bigger rooms and regardless, the rooms are always comfy if a little warm in summer. Breakfast and evening meals are varied and tasty. I have not had lunch. This is By far the best hotel in town.
Very Nice hotel with large and tidy rooms, breakfast was great as well and staff was very kind. I have been there twice in May and I am looking forward to come back there again. City is also beautiful in traditional style. I really like this place.
Nice quiet hotel located just off the town's pedestrian area. Car parking nearby, and the hotel validates the parking card for you, so no hassle when leaving the car park. The room I had was very big. Very comfortable bed. Shower with all amenities, such as body and hair was, soaps and lotions, toiletries from Dr. Hauschka (this might mean something to female readers :-)). Very friendly reception at both reception and breakfast. As is customary with good German hotels, the breakfast buffet is large and varied, and includes home-made jams. The breakfast fare was of excellent quality.
The Parkhotel Engelsburg is a very nice traditional hotel in the center of the old city, right at the start of the pedestrian zone. Limited parking is available on the premises and there is a parking structure right across from the hotel. There are shops and cafes nearby in walking distance. The staff is very friendly and attentive, excellent restaurant and the breakfast buffet is very comprehensive. My room was very spacious and nice with a large bathroom. I can definitely recommend this hotel for a stay in Recklinghausen.
Spent several nights here recently. Room was very spacious and beds comfortable. Food in the hotel was great and all staff really helpful and accommodating. Great location for exploring Recklinghausen. Would definitely recommend.
Stayed a few nights with business, nice staff and excellent breakfast. Room was a bit dated but large and overlooking the lovely garden and city walls. Shame about the noisy locals being served alcohol by the hotel in the garden beneath my room until after 1am on a Monday night/ Tuesday morning. Breakfast very nice indeed thankyou. There is no aircon in this hotel so its difficult to sleep on a warm night especially if there are noisy guests.
Spent 4 nights here with the Toyota MR2 car club. Lovely clean hotel steeped in history. Rooms very spacious, beds comfortable and a choice of pillows. Great choice at breakfast. Restaurant food lovely. Staff brilliant and helpful!
I have stayed here many times - the hotel has a nice atmosphere, reliable quality, clean rooms, nice bathrooms, wonderful breakfast, excellent restaurant and is right in the pedestrian zone close to shops and Cafés. Only downside is the lack of AC in the summer. If you stay here during a hot week (Germany does not have too many of those) look for a north facing room that is not on the top floor. For Sauna lovers - there is a comfortable Sauna.
This is an elegantly decorated and very nice hotel. My room was spacious and comfortable, bigger than the average. Breakfast and dinner were both excellent in the restaurant. The hotel is conveniently located for a walk in the town. Limited car parking but there is a multi storey public car park opposite. Staff were helpful and have good English.
I used almost to live in this hotel for 2 years while working nearby and now return once or twice a year. I recommend it highly. A beautiful 300 year old building surrounding a cobbled courtyard located within the city walls, with large, comfortable, stylish, well-equipped rooms and friendly service run with almost military but pleasant efficiency by a husband and wife team supported by many long-standing staff. Small gym, convivial bar area, meeting room. Restaurant is good but expensive but there are many reasonably priced eateries dotted around the town. Breakfast is a highlight. I am not sure about the exact price as we had very reasonable corporate arrangement but it is not unduly expensive. There are a surprising number of worthwhile places to visit within an hour or two e.g. historical Münster, a coal pit and modern art gallery in Essen, a sculpture park in Wuppertal. Car parking next to the hotel and 10-15 mins walk from the train station.
The hotel is really nice and the location is great (near center city). The double room we had was a little small though. The service was ok, the room, hallways, etc were always clean. The restaurant is real nice and cosy. The breakfast was good too and the staff really friendly.
This is a lovely hotel that I have stayed at many times for business. The staff and service are excellent. Breakfast is good and the restaurant is also quite good if a little overpriced. There are many places to eat within walking distance however. There is not much of a bar at the hotel - just a little corner in the lobby with some chairs but it is open 24 hours. Again, there are many bars in walking distance. The rooms are nicely appointed with classic style furniture - all quite new. Some rooms have small kitchenettes. Plan to pay extra for parking as there are only 4 or 5 free spots in front of the hotel.
Nice place with friendly staff. Good breakfast, although I would like some "normal" juice for the breakfast not just some multivitamina whatever that was. They also forgot to fill the soap dispensers in our bathroom. Except for that, great place. I would recommend a stay here. Not suitable for a tight budget though. They have an agreement with a parking house close by, so traveling by car is no problem. Close to the "city center"
I spent more than a week in the hotel, it's a good one and has a perfect location, in the heart of the city and close to the train station. Quite elegant, with old style furniture (not quite my style) but very clean. Rooms are small, like almost everywhere in Europe, not AC but surprisingly, with a very large bathroom. Personnel was attentive and cleaned the room carefully every day. The did offer dry cleaning/washing, too, but a little overpriced. Also, the rooms are overpriced in my opinion. A big minus is the noise level... The hotel has an inner court with tables where guests can have dinner or a drink... which is fine...except that there doesn't seem to be a limit to how late patrons can sit at these tables and speak and laugh as loud as during lunch time... It was 2.00 am and some where making a noise as if they were on a stadium, with no respect for the guests in their rooms who were trying to sleep... and nobody from the hotel bothered to stop them or to at least calm them down and tell them to keep the noise level at reasonable levels... Overall, a nice place to stay at but feel free to look for other cheaper options, too, maybe you find a gem!
In the past, my experience with Best Western was mixed - to put it positively - and even a Best Western Plus in Washington was a let-down. A very different and positive experience in the Engelsburg. Very pleasant and attentive staff, spacious rooms with comfortable beds. Just all around a pleasant atmosphere. And the hotel is right in the center of Recklinghausen. You can walk through the city with its boutiques and bars straight from the hotel.
We are regulars, visiting from UK. Our recent 3 night trip was as good as ever and we again ate in the hotel restaurant, it is superb nothing like most hotel restaurants at all. Really top notch food and particularly excellent steaks. We love the hotel breakfast and find it reasonably priced at 13 euros, fair value. The hotel is comfortable, nicely maintained and we always feel welcome so it's always a relaxing stay.
Stayed with my daughter on a car trip to the riviera. Venue is nice and conveniently located near the motorway and in the center of Recklinghausen -a pleasant German village. A minus was the lack of AC; it was a stuffy and warm summer night. Mattresses were covered by rubber, like in a hospital. Not very pleasant as it does not breathe. Breakfast was quite pricey, they were out of eggs and beacon when we arrived and they never filled up when we were there, even when asked and they initially promised to do so. Far too expensive for what you actually get, would not stay agin.
Greatly impressed by this small historic castle converted into a hotel. The building is just amazing. The balcony of my room had views of the very nice central courtyard. Room itself was a mini suite with the bedroom separate from the lounge. Service was excellent. A great experience.
Very beautiful hotel in the heart of Recklinghausen. Very clean and fresh rooms, superb breakfast buffet, garage nearby, excellent restaurant, best service. directyl at the town wall from the middle ages, on one side, on the other side directly on the center of the town.
Sometimes when you are on the route it is better to have a stop in a small town then in a big city. Recklinghausen is on the way from N to S and from E to W, so traveling across Germany you can always plan a pit stop there. Quiet, excellent, high level hotel in a lovely quiet city. Recommended!
This is our German home from home, having stayed there every year since they opened around 20 years ago. Super friendly, spotless comfortable rooms with great beds, an excellent restaurant with top notch food and a superb breakfast. All in a fab location - can't fault anything. Top German football teams and celebrities stay here because it's so comfortable and friendly.
I simple love this hotel. The rooms are nice, clean and well equipped (one could only wish to have a coffee machine). The location is perfect, both if you are in transit (close to the highway) and if you want to visit the city (a few meters further starts the pedestrian zone of the city centre). The staff is very helpful and speaks very good English. The breakfast is tasty and quite varied. The only problem is a small parking space in the courtyard. If you arrive late, most likely you won't find a spot for yourself. Right in front of the hotel there is however a reasonably priced public parking - so no worries. All in all, very nice and highly recommended hotel.
Generally the hotel is ok. the fitness room is very small, there is no pool. Breakfast is ok but not something to write home about. If you are landing in Dortmund or doing business in the area of Dortmund, this hotel is a reasonable choice. All is good but not exceptional
From the moment you arrive this place feels like a home away from home. Everywhere there are thoughtful elements that make your stay worthwhile. An example are the drinks available, free of charge, in the lobby. Tea and coffee during the day and water and apple juice later on. We stayed in the classic/comfort room and were greeted with space, clean linen and well kept rooms. The food available in the restaurant was wonderful. We rose to the challenge and went with the "let us surprise you" 3 course meal- do try and you won't be disappointed. Breakfast was worth the €13, especially if you have hot breakfast lovers like I do in the family. Parking can be problematic but there is a public car park opposite that can take overflow at a reduced rate. We used the hotel as a place to stay to visit Munster and then Schalke fC. Public transport to the game was effiencent and cheap. All up, a great break.
We booked the hotel as a stop over on our way back from Denmark. Having a double room with added bed for our kid we had a room under the roof with a lot of roof inclination. It was relatively dark and overall very uninspiring. Given the money we payed, I would have expected a bit more, especially given the fact that it is the best rated hotel in town. Location wise it is situated at a big street, but we didn't hear the noise (phasing the other side). Also the hotel is at the edge of the shopping street, so you can easily walk into the city. We did, but the selection of shops is rather depressing. We also had dinner in the outside seating area of the hotel. It is situated in the court of the hotel and was nice. Food was ok, but unfortunately some nearby guests started smoking which ruined the experience for us. So next time we will likely be choosing an alternative in one of the other cities around.
I have stayed here twice now, once I ended up in the Tower Suite where you do a lot of climbing of stairs but it is worth it for a special experience. It is a beautiful location in easy walking distance from the railway station. It offers very spacious rooms and I had two very pleasant stays there. Staff are friendly and always helpful, in particular reception and conference employees. The food is good, something for everybody. In the summer the courtyards are tranquil and invite to sit and chill.
Having grown up in Recklinghausen and visiting from time to time, I've been at the Engelsburg once again this weekend. It was a very nice stay, and I was put up in room 228 which has a separate bedroom, and a nice living room. I had to work quite a bit on my laptop during the weekend and the extra space was much appreciated. A Plus is also the nice / friendly staff; the location of course; and the 24/7 hotel bar availability.
having stayed at a considerable number of hotels in the past few years, the Engelsburg is the first hotel in my experience that offers a perfectly designed bathroom. The shower is easily adjusted ... with ones eyes closed .. and there is a grip rail to help less fit people to safely exit the bath tub. The floor is easily cleaned because the toilet, etc. are lifted off the floor. There is a fan-heater to create a temperature convenient to the guest and the hair dryer's speed can be adjusted by squeezing the handle. There are hooks to hang items of clothing and the wash-basin is set flush into the table top. The room does not steam up when having a shower. The rest of the hotel is in its homely splendor very efficiently run by professional reception- and restaurant staff. The rooms are well appointed, the beds are comfortable and one is loathed to leave. This is not the first time I was a guest at the Engelsburg, but every time I was informed that I was booked in there, I looked forward to that experience with great anticipation .. and was never disappointed. So sorry that I can't say anything negative ? The staff ought to be congratulated on their superb team effort.
been here once before and it was not quite as tight in what one asked for and got. may have been a bad day. location is great as are the amenities if folks are willing to make them available promptly as promised.
We were looking for an overnight stay en route to the Channel Tunnel, and picked the Parkhotel Engelsburg from the GPS in the car. This hotel is generously proportioned in the German style with large rooms and bathrooms providing plenty of circulation space. Matching cherry wood furnishings throughout, a well appointed bathroom, without a separate shower unit - you have to step into the bath to shower, at least in the room where we stayed. Two armchairs, a table and free wifi makes the room a comfortable work space as well as a place to relax. The restaurant is excellent, both for dinner and breakfast with English spoken by all staff that we encountered. Car parking is limited but there is an underground car park immediately opposite which is available for an extra fee. This was a serendipitous find, and an excellent location for an overnight stop in the northern Ruhr. It's also an interesting building architecturally. I would certainly stay there again.
Stay here many days a year for business. Never been disappointed! Clean rooms, perfect service and very helpful staff. Breakfast is very good with a lot of fresh food. Restaurant is rather expensive but quality and service are accordingly. Great terras! Wifi is free and rather fast for an hotel.
We stayed for two nights over the week end. Check in was efficient and we went up to our room located on the 2nd floor in a square tower. The room was lovely with a separate siting area and balcony that overlooked the courtyard and garden area. There was a wedding going on and it was fun to watch the bride and guests have their pictures taken in the garden. The only negative was the room had a bit of a musty air about it. Parking was easy with a car park across the road at 7 euros per 24 hrs and free parking in the courtyard if available. Breakfast was a nice buffet of typically German cold meets and good bread as well as other options. There was a terrace but unfortunately the weather was not kind for us. On the whole would recommend as a lovely place to stay, just be aware church is round the corner and you will here the mass bells at 9.45 am on a Sunday morning. Also pillows were a bit hard, even their soft comfort ones. The service from reception and restaurant staff was very friendly, helpful and efficient. Could not fault this and would certainly stay again.
I stayed here for one night and I was very pleased with my stay. Check in procedures were very efficient, room was great (comfortable bed, large enough bathroom (for European standards) and the premises are very well kept and clean. Breakfast was good with a variety of breads, fruits, cheeses and hams and yoghurt. Would recommend this place.
Stayed here for one night since I was on a short business trip. Rooms are not that big but very clean. Bathroom however was large! Room was very clean and the service at the lobby was great. Friendly staff and helpful. No complaints whatsoever.
