« Wonderful hotel in Chartres France »

This beautiful hotel is a 5 minute walk to the cathedral and close to all shopping and restaurants. Our 2 room suite was beautiful with a nice soaking tub, perfect bathroom, great bed and pillows, coffee and tea set up. It was elegant and comfortable. The staff tried very hard to help us in English and we did fine. The restaurant is very good and enough waiters speak English. They also have an English menu which we found to be very unusual in Chartres. The bar is quaint, comfortable and charming. We highly recommend the Monarque, we were very pleased.

« Great location and lovely stay! »

Four of us had two rooms at Grand Monarque. My husband and I opted for a bigger room which was indeed spacious. It was quiet, very comfortable, had two sinks in the salle de bain (toilet was in a separate space). There was a hot water pot for making tea which was very handy. Our son and his ?copine' had a regular room and they said it didn't feel tight and was also nice. From the hotel it was an easy walk to the cathedral and the train station. The staff was friendly and helpful. Should we find ourselves in Chartres in the future, I would love to stay at the BW Grand Monarque again.

« Nice property, friendly people and a good location »

We stayed there at the start of a 2 week vacation. There is a lot of good things to say about the hotel; good location, nice rooms, friendly people, free valet parking (pretty rare), and close to the major attractions of Chartres. The building is old (hey, it's Europe!), but the rooms are nicely appointed and good-sized for Europe. The hallways are incredibly long and narrow with many turns, and there is only one elevator, but who cares? It's not a huge property. Our deal did not include breakfast (we booked on points), and it's pretty expensive, so it's better to have it included if you can. The breakfast was good though. We couldn't eat dinner in the restaurant as it was fully-booked; I guess because it was a holiday. So book that early if you're staying on a holiday; not many restaurants will be open. This hotel was definitely one of the better BW's we've stayed in.

    « Highly recommended! »

Finding a convenient place to stop in the car is problematic but we just managed to just squeeze onto a single space between Bollards reserved for unloading (15min max ) just around the corner from the Hotel. Very helpful, pleasant and friendly welcome . We were then offered to have our car taken to the hotel car park, a short distance away €10 a day which we thought was good . The hotel has a great deal of character and well situated for the centre of Chartres. Our room was pleasant, reasonably sized, clean and decorated in suitably period style with a good bathroom . Comfortable bed. Fast WiFi. The lounge bar has a really good very wide selection of cocktails ( the ones we had were excellent ) as well as a very wide selection of spirits/liqueurs, which arrive in large measures. The locally brewed beers are also very good too Throughout our stay we had exceptional service . Highly recommended! *****

    « Loved our stay »

We had a lovely stay at this well situated hotel. I broke my ankle prior to the trip and asked the hotel for a room with a separate shower. We were given a beautiful and large accessible room. When we arrived, we were concerned about parking our car on the side of the hotel for check-in and when we called the hotel with our concern, a member of the staff was waiting outside to help with our car and luggage.

« Beautiful hotel, great location, excellent aervice »

Booked this hotel last minute while driving up through France. On arrival the welcome from Alexandre was perfect, warm, friendly and efficient. Check in and parking was seamless, and the room was delightful, even though it was the cheapest option. Really charming attic style with toile de jouy walls and chic modern bathroom. The building is lovely, typically French lobby, staircase, bar and restaurant. Spa facilities look great but we didn't have enough time to sample, sadly. Would love to stay again for longer!

« Great in everything, book early to save »

We had a wonderful experience in this place. Staff were polite and super friendly especially the concierge who helped parked our car into the garage. If you happen to bring your car here, they have a space for unloading on the side street next to the hotel, and will swiftly park it away for you. If the concierge is off-duty, the very spacious garage (street level, gated) is only 2 blocks away - not at all a hassle. The room looks like one belonging to an aristocrat (the theme of the hotel, no?) with a firm and comfortable bed to my liking. I highly recommend their one star Michelin restaurant Le Georges which offers sophisticated cuisine. If we had stayed longer, we would have tried their brasserie as well. Book early enough at their non-refundable rate on their official website. The discount is huge.

    « Amazing stay »

Very beautiful hotel & amazing rooms which make you feel as a ?grand monarque?. Rooms have a large bed and are very clean. Individual air conditioning in each room allows you to control individually the temperature. Large tv screen. Special mention to Laurence who is very very kind and makes everything possible so that your stay will remain unforgettable. La Cour is a delicious restaurant located within the facilities. Best hotel in Chartres - i will definitively come back again.

« Old style with modern management »

We travelled in Dec 2017 to France and drove to this accommodation. That was a misty cold evening and we just felt the classic and historic atmosphere at the front entrance. Reception managres were very helpful and professional. There are a classy tiny bar and dining room with good wine and food. The room we stayed was tidy and clean. All these brought you to the remembrance on the French history of Henry III whose footsteps stayed many decades ago while leaving his beautiful queen at the nearest Château Chenonceau until her death.

    « perfect location »

We only stayed here for one night when passing through to see the Lumiere. Perfect location in the centre of chartres. We didn't actually eat here, not even breakfast as we went out for a walk and ate a croissant and coffee locally. lovely hotel. Can't fault it really for what we did

    « A Hotel Resort »

So far its one of the best hotel resort near île de france and the hotel offers excellent accomodation and relaxation. We stay here from January 6-8 and I find the staff are very nice specially the woman at the reception was really accomodating and helpful when we check in during the night. I will definitely come back and recommend this hotel to my friends and relatives. PS: The breakfast starts at 7 in the morning until 10pm and they offer variety of foods such as cereals, bread, yogurts, coffee, juices, hams and a lot more to choose.

« Stunning hotel with gracious friendly staff »

We spent two nights at the Best Western Grand Monarque from 29th of December to the 21st of December. We booked car parking at 10 euro a night which is really excellent. The private car park is a few minutes walk at the back of the hotel and is very secure, you need to be buzzed in and out. The spaces are also very large and we were very impressed by it. The hotel itself is like an old lady, full or character and charm....we loved the bar area as there were lots of little corners for romantic chats and it was very comfortable. The bar staff were charming. Our room was overlooking a side street and was so quiet. Huge bedroom with a sofa, so plenty of room. The shower was over the tub which did cause a bit of water on the floor but not a problem. Our first night we had booked to eat in St George and boy were we impressed by it. We have eaten in Michellen restaurants before but this was one of the best we have been in. Excellent food and service. Our 1989 champagne was out of this world!! The second night we ate in the other main restaurant and it was very busy and the food was again fabulous. Breakfast was stunning, so much selection and we had an early start so we had the room all to ourselves at 7 am ! We would highly recommend this hotel and hope to be back soon.

    « Beautiful Grand Lady »

This is a beautiful, old world, elegant hotel. Located perfectly for exploring Chartres on foot, the hotel is just lovely. The staff were incredibly professional and welcoming. Our room elegant, warm, comfortable and quiet. We had dinner in the brasserie and a night cap in the lounge bar - both of which were just spot on. Great meal and the bar was a night way to finish off. Breakfast was just perfect also. Great hotel - I'd come back again.

« One of the best »

Nothing like the Best western hotels we've stayed at in the past, this one was truly special. The staff, the rooms, the location, the bar, the restaurant, the spa - Amazing!! The price per night (just shy of 100 euros) was a good bargain in peak season.

    « Excellent All Around »

We spent one night at the Grand Monarque on our way south. From the moment we arrived to the moment we left, the staff were welcoming, accommodating, and friendly. They parked our car for us in their lot down the the street. The standard room was well-appointed with an exceptionally large bathroom. Wi-fi was fast and reliable. The front desk made dinner reservations for us in the old town and the hotel bar is a gem. (The hotel has two restaurants and one is a Michelin star.) Proximity to the pedestrian area and cathedral is ideal. Wouldn't hesitate to stay here again!

« beautiful hotel and restaurant with lovely friendly service »

we arrived having booked one night, but quickly decided to stay an extra night. The hotel is beautiful, and our room, which was one of the cheaper ones was lovely, with great shower, really comfortable bed and lovely decor. The staff were very helpful and made the change to 2 nights with no fuss whatsoever. The welcome on arrival was warm and welcoming and again, very friendly and helpful staff. We booked into the restaurant and were not disappointed, food and service were both great. We will definitely be returning to this hotel and will recommend as a stopover to family and friends who come down to see us in mid France for holidays.Big plus for us was that the accommodation was dog friendly (although I think ours was the only dog in the hotel).

« Absolutely wonderful place and exceptional staff »

Fantastic hotel and very good value for the price. A very large well maintained charming room with spa tub which is a wonderful bonus when touring by bicycle. Staff went above and beyond to make my stay enjoyable. Breakfast was typical of a European continental. Restaurant meal and service was excellent.

    5
« Extremely comfortable rooms and two excellent restaurants »

On arrival at the hotel, the desk manager parked our car. Our room was excellent and was very well equipped with flat screen TV, ample storage space and seperate wc and bathroom. Toiletries were supplied together with bathrobe and slippers. The bed was very comfortable and everything was spotless. We chose to eat in the Brasserie which was a delightful room. Our meals were excellent as was breakfast with a huge choice including hot meals.

« Great Service and Location »

Excellent hotel ... very comfortable and quiet accommodations, pleasant and helpful service, great location, good food, all at a reasonable price. Desk staff warmly welcomed us and quickly took care of checking us in and parking our car. We didn't need it thereafter during our time in Chartres as we could walk to everything we wanted to see and do while there. Enjoyed an excellent buffet breakfast. Didn't use the main restaurant which is one of the top-rated ones in town (believe it has a Michelin start) as it was fully booked. However, not a problem as there were many fine choices for dinner within easy walking distance .

« A lovely city and really a nice hotel »

As we spent this years vacation in Brittany in the westernmost part of France, we decided not to do the entire driving in one day, but to stay one night in the city of Chartres, about 65 km southwest of Paris. We stayed in the Grand Monarque on both our journey there and also when we returned to Germany. The Grand Monarque is situated at Place des Espars, less than 10 minutes by foot away from the famous Cathedral and only few steps (just crossing the street) from the old town. As parking seems to be an issue at that part of the city, make sure you book a place in the hotel's parking lot when making your reservation. Navigation systems will lead you on the Place des Espars in such way that the hotel will be on your right hand side. Right after passing it, there is a small street - turn into that street and you will find a reserved space on the right, at the hotel's walls and only few meters from the entrance, where the car can be parked for some minutes. If occupied, follow the little street, turn right and then right again and you will be led back to Place des Espars. Before entering the main street again, there is a parking place for taxies on your right and you can park your car there to rush into the hotel (30m) and make your check-in. As the hotel comes with valet parking service, there is not need to worry about where to park the car and how to come there, what we found pretty convenient. The hotel itself is not one of these standard hotels which look the same in every place and city you go, but is located in one of the more historical buildings. Rooms are pretty charming, a bit old-fashioned in style, but full of atmosphere, as is the entire place. Staff was extremely friendly and helpful, making our stay even better. We had a standard room the first night, which was not too spacious ? good for one night, but definitively too small for a longer stay. Therefore, we decided to book a higher category on our way back home and were very lucky to be upgraded into a suite which was simply marvellous! If you stay at the Monarque, you should not miss having a dinner at Le Georges restaurant, which comes with one star in the Guide Michelin and is situated right in the hotel! We had a wonderful 5 ? course dinner there, accompanied by a pretty good choice of mainly local wine! As regards the touristic highlights, the Cathedral is a must! Please note that the famous labyrinth is entirely visible on Friday afternoons, but that the crew there is eager to have all the chairs replaced upon the labyrinth at about 5 pm. And, finally, if you have the time do not miss the evening lightshows in the old part of the town, either, especially that displayed on the cathedral itself (shows come daily from April to October). All in all, we had a wonderful stay at Chartres and the Monarque and hope to be able to return there in the future.

« You don't get what you buy »

We were 3 adults: my mother, my sister and myself. When we booked the hotel with booking.com we saw that the hotel had rooms that accommodated 3 people and in the room description we read: 1 QUEEN SIZE BED AND 2 TWIN BEDS. That is why we decided to go for the triple room. When we arrived at the hotel, we were given a room with two beds only: a queen size bed and a double bed. When I asked the lady at the reception to give us what we had bought, she refused to do so by saying that the reservation was for a room for three adults and that was it.

    « Stylish Hotel »

Always enjoy my stays here. Great location for the town, but be careful and book the hotels own garage. I forgot this time, but the reception were so helpful and got me a place. Well worth the 10 Euros. Rooms are comfy and stylish, as well as being well equipped. Would recommend room 101/102, nice view of the square and cathedral.

« Nice hotel. Location difficult to find by car. »

No question - this is a very nice hotel close to the best areas of the town. But finding it, even with satnav, was difficult. We knew it was close to the Coure de Ville underground car park so we parked first then found the hotel on foot. The parking cost €18 overnight. No real alternative so do factor that in. The hotel room was a good size and well eqipped, but no English TV channel. Also no means of controlling temp or a/c within the room. Weird. Breakfast was excellent. And do not expect the hotel to be close to the Cathedral. It was a good 400 metres away. Overall just good enough for a 4 star review, but only just!

« Great old fashioned hotel with modern conveniences and good location. »

A friend suggested this place, and I was on a bicycle ride from Paris onward. It looked a little bit fancier than my usual fare, but I decided to go for it, and glad I did. Helpful staff, a beautiful room, good location and a nice combination of restaurants and bar in the lobby. Breakfast was great and they even had gluten free bread for me. The bar is very cozy and they have a Brasserie and a fancy restaurant, so you can choose which one to you want. One hint, be sure to look at the wine list, it's supposed to be one of the better ones in France. I was not offered the list in the brasserie, but when I asked for it they gladly brought it. If you're a wine aficionado it's worth a look. Would definitely return.

    5
    « Outstanding! »

The staff sell this hotel. From the moment you arrive they pay attention to every detail. Ensure you have all you need, provided local information and walked us to the lift. Rooms were very comfortable. We had booked last minute and so ours was a little small but had all that was needed. I visited the spa which was very busy but was a pleasant experience. I am recovery from knee surgery and so use the pool for rehab. I think if I was going to relax, then it was over capacity. This was a Saturday as we had stopped on the way back from the south on way to the ferry. I was told that it is always busy on a Saturday. It also cost €15 which I am not sure I had read in the details. Staff said hello and asked if there is anything they could help with whenever you saw any, quite extraordinary and not annoying. The Chartres Illuminations are fantastic. If you are looking for a stop over then this is a must. Check dates for illuminations as tend to be July/August only. Fabulous hotel and within easy walking distance to all attractions and amenities - even in crutches!

    5
« Great place to stop off on the way to the ferry »

Great location, swanky hotel, but booked really early in the year to get a family room (as they don't have many) for 2 adults and 2 young children for under £200. (The alternative would be two separate rooms which at most places would be well north of £200) Breakfast wasn't included but they didn't charge for the children, Make sure you book their secure parking for convenience and peace of mind. The stopover meant we didn't have to worry about getting stuck in traffic and missing the last ferry and a nice bit of luxury to end the holiday.

    4
« Strategically located in the centre »

We booked a bed and breakfast room for €200. Acceptable for the location. The Hôtel is very busy but the staff is very professional. As my husband was not feeling well we ordered room service. The food arrived within 15 mins and the food was adequate. There is a mc Donald's opposite the Hôtel.

« Great location, friendly staff, nice hotel, good value. No trailers in car park, height 1.90m »

We arrived with our 3 year old daughter in our car towing a small trailer. You can't stop outside the hotel so we pulled into the side street beyond and I ran back around to reception. They were very helpful, someone came to help with our bags and we unloaded with pushchairs and various paraphernalia. I was directed to park in the city centre underground car park which is opposite the hotel underground. I was told you can take trailers into park, which I did, but beware as when I went back to get the car the next day I was told you can't park with trailers! They let me off though, very nice parking staff. The hotel room was a family room with double bed and sofa, the room was very good and the bathroom was great, a little old fashioned but we liked it, it had character - and a Jacuzzi function in the bath... Our daughter loved this! We had room service dinner which was very good and a special vegetarian pasta was offered to us as there were no vegetarian meals on the menu. Very good indeed. We skipped breakfast and went out to see the sights, the staff were friendly and helpful guiding us with maps. The Cateral is wonderful, go see it! On Fridays they open the maze for pilgrim's to follow. We also went to see the picassette house of mosaic, great story and an amazing house to visit. We went around lunch time and were the only people there for an hour, great photos! A great hotel, a little old fashioned but we liked the feel of it, friendly staff and a perfect location. Many thanks!

« An excellent hotel that retains much of its former grandeur »

This was a very pleasant surprise. A once prestigious hotel that retains much of its character and style with some attractive deals available. Centrally located (5 minutes from the famous cathedral), wonderful courtyard restaurant area and a very comfortable room. Neither corporate or eclectic, a happy compromise of individuality and high specifications. Friendly service, substantial and well furnished rooms and a good dinner in the open courtyard (with a sliding atrium roof for the rain and cold). Huge and very comfortable bed, proper china cups and glass glasses (no Mercure plastic!), WiFi fine. Only issue was bath plug. Hotel could tidy up the exterior at the side which was a bit lacking in TLC, otherwise in very good order - even it's own bikes for customer use. We stayed in the Mercure next door a couple of years back, a similar price but the Grand Monarque was quite a few notches above in terms of quality, service and the environment.

« Excellent stay in Chartres - with dog »

We were so pleased to find this hotel and they welcomed our dog too . We stayed one night and would like to return and see more of the city . Breakfast was excellent and everyone spoke English- which was helpful . The room had the best bed that I have slept in for years - I SO appreciated this - sumptuous and so cosy - perfect . The hotel welcomed our dog - a Labrador and were just so relaxed that we were too . I think that we will be back .

    « Well-situated and reliable »

I spent my third night here during a brief summer jaunt to north France. The lounges were elegant, and the bedroom (upgraded!) was sumptuous and clean. Breakfast was plentiful and excellent. My only reservation is that the landing area of my floor looked dusty, and areas of the carpet needed a vacuum. Some of the light fittings as one ascends the stairs from the ground to the first floor also needed a dusting. These caveats aside, the overnight stay was enjoyable. Valet parking is offered, and a small charge is levied for the use of the hotel car park.

    5
    « Majestic »

Lovely hotel in centre of Chartre, the staff all very helpful and polite and the food was very good in the Bistro. They are dog friendly and you can even hire an ebike to ride around the city. Rooms are typically French decor and clean and tidy. Would love to come back sometime and try out The Michelin recommend restaurant.

« My first ever negative review »

This is my first ever negative review and I write with a heavy heart as we spoke to the hotel about our concerns. Caveat emptor - I would not recommend to fellow travellers this hotel nor return. We travel frequently and stay in a good range of hotels, inns, b&bs campsites etc as you'll see from my posts. In brief, the toilet in our room didn't work. We were told we could use the toilet in the room next door. I had expected that the hotel would offer a gesture of goodwill of their choice, for the inconvenience caused by having to move between rooms for comfort breaks. We were told that use of a second room was the goodwill. Here are our issues with that: 1. They had to give us access to this room or we wouldn't have been able to go to the loo 2. The hotel manager implied that because we had a good rate (ie Expedia booking) we were doing well to get 2 rooms. 3. The rest of the bathroom in our suite which was working was not a 5* standard. See the photo and judge for yourself. 1960s colour scheme with a 1970s hairdryer. 4. Do not offer discount rates if you aren't prepared to treat all your guests as equals. Shame on you hotel monarch

    4
« Pleasing stopover on the way to or from Calais »

Our late arrival did not faze the staff and we were accommodated in both the car park and the restaurant despite the hour. The car park is 5 minutes walk away, but it is secure and worth the extra. Dinner was very acceptable, although the late evening service was on the leisurely side, even for France. Note that the gourmet restaurant is closed on Sunday evenings. Our room was comfortable and spacious, and we enjoyed the buffet breakfast the next morning. The town centre is an easy walk. We would consider staying again, as Chartres is a convenient drive away from the Channel ports.

    5
« Value for money stopover »

En route to the Loire from Brussels we stopped over in Chartres for 1 night. Great price, great restaurant and great location! Dog-friendly, the hotel is elegant and comfortable and the staff friendly. Parking is the only drawback: it's not free but there is a night rate that makes a short stay affordable!

    5
« Lovely end to our tour of France »

From the start it was great that we could park outside the hotel and the car was very conveniently taken by a member of staff to a parking location and brought back the next morning when we were leaving. All the staff were very friendly and helpful. The decor of the room was fabulous - location excellent for the cathedral and the city centre. The evening meal in the restaurant and the bar were very good. We didnt take breakfast because we felt that it was quite expensive. John Sparkes

    « Luxury »

Beautiful hotel right in the centre of Chartres.Bedroom tastefully decorated. My problem was that we booked through an internet site and got it at a good price,we thought the staff were very snobby about this. The lights in Chartres are amazing

    5
« Fantastic hotel - stylish and extremely comfortable beds! »

It was just a one night stop and we were spoilt. The hotel was comfortable and stylish in its decor. The bedroom was very well equipped offering complimentary towelling slippers. The bed was absolutely supper, including the pillow quality which is often lacking in hotels. Thick mattress cover so not for the 'hard-bed' lovers. It was the most scrumptious bed we have had in a long while, reminding us of New York luxury. We didn't eat at the hotel but would do next time. Well done Best Western. We will be back.

    3
« Good name but not the quality I accepted »

We stayed in the hotel on our business trip for 4 nights. The hotel looks really nice, old façade, interesting interiors. The reception was for me a bit ?forced? friendly but she still provided the needed information for the travellers. Parking is an issue because there is only a small parking lot available which needs to be reserved in advance, but it happened to us that despite of the reservation there was not enough slot for us so we had to walk quite a distance because there was no free parking place on the street. The room was OK but a bit worn out. It was strange to me that the floor is fully tiled in the room. It might be easier to clean but walking on it at night is not the best feeling and it looks a bit cheap. In the separated toilet the valve cover was broken and fixed with adhesive tape and bathroom was dated too. The bed and the wifi connection was good. Breakfast nothing special, fresh bread, croissants different cheeses and hams, jams, fresh orange juice and yoghurts. There is also a gym on the first floor and we were told a spa is available in the hotel for additional charge but the opening hours were not suitable for a business traveller but for holiday travellers. Check out was far too long because the invoice had to be modified 2 times, although I provided the company details during our check in. Summary: for me it seemed to be a bit overpriced for the quality they delivered.

    « Surprisingly Charming »

My family and I stayed here for only one night on our way from Mont St. Michel to Paris because my husband wanted to see the Cathedral. We picked this hotel based on its proximity to the walking area of the town and Cathedral and because we've always had good luck with Best Westerns. Well, we weren't disappointed! The hotel is in a great location and has a lot of charm because it's clearly an older hotel. However, our rooms were large and comfortable and the A/C worked great -- something we appreciated on a hot weekend in June. We even had a top view of the Cathedral and a view of an ancient wall clock, giving us the feel of this old city without any of the discomfort. The staff was courteous and helpful -- all in all a surprisingly nice stay.

    5
« Lovely stay in Chartes »

My husband and I stayed in Chartres on our way to Baden in Morbihan. I selected the Monarque because it revived great reviews and I was not disappointed. The dining room was particularly nice, airy and bright, making dinner & breakfast particularly delightful. I only wish we could have stayed longer.

    4
« Great location, great staff »

The hotel is short 5 min walk to Chartres Cathedral, its very central on a main modern road just outside the old town, The hotel is a classic 'grand' hotel affair with a posh facade, traditional interiors, chateau like building, with a lovely well designed outside terrace/inside bar. Reception was really friendly and helpful, and your car is parked by a valet (must be a tight squeeze). Our room was large and spacious, traditional in style, with large high ceiling windows, round bath, airy and a fantastic mattress so snug and comfy. Breakfast was a simple affair but perfect, great coffee, a selection of meats and cheeses, toast, croissants, jams, fresh orange juice and yoghurts to set you off for the day perfectly. My beef - well the room needed updating really, the separate toilet with a broken fan wasnt good, the bathroom was dated and a tad tatty the toiletries smelt like an old ladies. The decor of the main room needed refreshing, the plain blue chequered material walls could do with a pattern, and just a few more luxurious furnishings and design details. It was €148 a night so for the price I would expect that really. However I would recommend this hotel, the staff alone are a delight.

    5
« A great hotel with wonderful service »

There is secure valet parking which is very helpful in such a busy town. The staff are very courteous and efficient and although it is a busy hotel you do not feel anonymous. Our room was good and quiet and we had a good night's sleep. We ate dinner in the restaurant and it was a first class meal. Breakfast was very good with a huge buffet and lots of choice. A great experience.

« Excellent hotel in the heart of Chartres »

We had a fabulous stay at the Grand Monarque and enjoyed a superb dinner at Le George. Hotel is in the heart of Chartres, perfect location, easy access to Chartres Cathedral and all the sites, shops, restaurants and train station. Room was excellent, as was the service and staff, special "Merci Beaucoup!" to Wendy for all her excellent assistance! We plan to return for the hotel's 50th anniversary next year. Highly recommended!

    « Superb stay - recommended »

Super service from the minute we arrived, chap came and took keys and sorted parking of our rather large car! Great & interesting room, we only had only had one night but wished we had longer! Our friends loved their room too. Excellent breakfast but do eat at the Michelin star restaurant, it was a highlight of our two week holiday. To cap it off, the very friendly and excellent front desk girls advised we see the light show and we walked back to the cathedral. It was mind blowing, moving and one of the most beautiful things we have ever seen. It's on till October so do see if you can fit a one nighter here!

« Great rooms and friendly staff »

We were pleasantly surprised with this hotel . We stayed here twice this year once in March and again in May. The first visit I booked a prestige room and it was superb. Very large with a modern bathroom. The second visit I booked a deluxe room which wasn't as large as the first one but it was still good. The hotel restaurant was excellent and the reception staff friendly and extremely helpful. I would definitely recommend this hotel. Excellent value for money.

What a fabulous hotel in a fabulous city. Lovely rooms, very helpful & friendly staff, delicious food & breakfast. The bar served a great Gin & Tonic too!! Very luxurious all round. Right in the centre so easy to look around. The Cathedral is beautiful & well worth a quick visit. Well worth every euro!

Lovely boutique hotel. Beautiful hotel, generously sized room with lovely amenities. Located within an easy way to the Cathedral and old city. Our room was large with a lovely bath and lovely robe and slippers.

« Great visit; great staff »

We had a one night stay in mid-May in one of the deluxe queen rooms. We really enjoyed the visit; wished it could have been longer. We especially enjoyed the old fashion feel of the hotel and room. Room was very good sized, with a very comfortable bed and large bathroom with large tub. Great bar on the ground floor with a terrace and restaurant and another nice looking restaurant inside the hotel. The best part of the visit, aside from visiting the Chartres sites, was the front desk staff, especially a young man named Alexander, who couldn't do enough. He was helpful, welcoming, checked us in, handled our car and luggage and any and all questions. Wonderful guy and a tribute to the hotel. The other staff we encountered were also very helpful and welcoming. We really enjoyed Chartres and the Grand Monarque and will definitely return.

« Lovely hotel in a lovely town. »

My brother and I stayed here over the weekend 19/22 May 2017 as we were going to the Moto GP in Le Mans. We had driven from Dieppe and were a little nervous about locating the hotel but we found it easily. Check in was efficient and friendly and they had room in the hotel car park for us (10 euros a day) which was very lucky as we hadn't pre-booked. I would recommend booking this if you do have a car, as parking was at a premium in the area directly around the hotel. The room itself was very nice. Very clean, with lovely bathroom (and a great bath). Comfortable beds, and fairly quiet (although there was a little noise on the Friday night as the bar/restaurant downstairs was extremely popular). We didn't use the bar or restaurant ourselves but they looked very nice. There are plenty of restaurants in the vicinity, as well as McDonalds / Subway and a very good supermarket Monoprix. Free wifi in room worked well, and there was a gym which looked pretty modern. Chartres itself is a great town for a weekend away. Fantastic old cathedral, with a lovely old town. There is a light show in the summer evenings which was very good, and as I say, lots of nice bars and restaurants. Was friendly and safe feeling. Next time I am in France with the wife, i will definitely bring her to Chartres and the Grand Monarque.

« A superb experience. Brilliant staff and very comfortable hotel within easy walking distance of the cathedral and shops. »

We arrived late after a delayed ferry crossing. We rang the hotel to warn them that we weren't sure of our arrival time but they couldn't have been more welcoming or hospitable both on the phone and on our arrival at about 9.30 p.m. We were able to eat a delicious bar food type meal in the hotel at about 10.00 p.m. (Unusual for France). We had requested a room with a street view and a bath, both of which were provided. The room was spacious, warm and comfortable with a fridge and tea and coffee making facilities.

    « Exceptional »

We stayed here for one night on our French road trip. Compared to our previous two Mercure hotels this was by far the best. And cheaper per night but when breakfast added slightly more expensive. The staff at reception were exceptionally nice. Especially Virginia. They could not have done enough. The room was excellent and the bed huge and very comfortable. Lovely big bathroom. In the evening we sat in the bar. It was like a throwback to a bygone era. A lovely salon. The staff again were excellent. The food lovely too. In the morning we had the buffet breakfast (€16 each). Really good with excellent fresh choice. We would definitely stay here again and recommend it.

« Well above the average city centre hotel »

This hotel impressed from the start - welcome, service, valet parking.Right through staff were helpful and seemed genuinely pleased when we said how much we had enjoyed our stay. The room was large and furnished with taste. The bar is cosy and the breakfast offers a wide variety of lovely food, even inlcuding home-made jams.

« A cosy night on the road. »

Not your average Best Western. Classic old school luxury hotel recently refurbished with a starred restaurant ( we didn't try it). Plenty of character, excellent front desk service, rooms impeccably clean, spacious (for europe) and very comfortable with lots of plush pillows, great linen and thick duvets. Proper shower (not the horrible tub/shower hybrid), good towels. A bargain. 10 minute walk to the Cathedral. Parking at additional cost. Arriving by car is tricky as the one small drop off space is on a narrow side street. I will stay here again.

    « Michelin »

One of the best pastas eaten. Michelin 1-star restaurant. Not much for a vegetarian but just truly awesome food, ambience and service! Very homely yet sophisticated for the town. Can't wait for the next time!

« Our regular first night stopover »

We have kept on returning to this hotel, whenever we are passing, for the last 20 years. Its always been welcoming, clean, and efficient and now has two good restaurants. Parking is some way away down a side street but the staff will park your car for you. Its hard to stop outside to unload due to new bus lanes.

« Loved this hotel and will return I hope »

Perfect location for exploring the Chartres and the Cathedrale. Based on a tip on TA, I paid a little more and we got a Prestige room - king bed, huge room, great modern bath, quiet - everything was great. Excellent check-in and service. After a long rainy day, we were too lazy and cold to go out to eat for dinner so we decided to just go downstairs, but after checking online realized it was probably the best restaurant in Charters. It was a terrific meal. We will probably return someday to have more time in Chartres and we'll certainly stay here.

« Best hotel in Chartres ... the very best! »

Our favorite hotel in Chartres. Excellent rooms for a great price. Elegant hotel with a superb restaurant and a romantic bar. Wonderful staff. I can't say enough about this hotel. The location is superb. The attention to detail is superb. Everything is superb. And it's near the finest cathedrals in the universe. Do a YouTube search for "Chartres Cathedral documentary." But about Grand Monarque: All the rooms are excellent but our favorite is room #102. It's not the most expensive and it's large with a wonderful view of the town square.

    « Disappointing »

I have stayed here before and was enthralled with the room, and the room service. The desk staff were just as great as last time, but I booked a mid-rate room better than the last time and was given a room whose windows opened on to a walkway with cigarette butts on it. The room was so hot that we needed a fan and that didn't suffice. There was an airconditioner, but it was "off for the season" in October. Beautiful remodel, beautiful bathroom, but much smaller and sooooo hot and smelled like cigarettes with the window open. We were too tired from traveling to complain and didn't want to sound like "ugly americans" so we just went to sleep as best we could. We won't stay there again.

« Pleasant city centre vintage hotel »

This hotel is well situated in the centre of Chartres just a short walk from the Cathedral. The complex road layout of the Place des Epars nearly blew our GPS SatNav off the map, but once you feel happy about crossing a bus lane and dodging into the '5 minute' drop-off it's easy to pop in to Reception ready for check in. The hotel's secure pre-bookable car park (10 euros) is just up a narrow street with an intercom back to reception who open the gates for you. As it was a wet Sunday evening we dined in off the brasserie menu but city restauarants are nearby as well. The room was rather warm and airless so light sleepers might want to ask for the duvet to be switched to a sheet and blanket. A tight timescale meant that we didn't get any sight seeing done, but we have stopped in the city previously.

    5
    « Great Location »

Comfortable hotel with a great location if you are visiting Chartres to see the cathedral. We could see it from our window which overlooked a Sunday flea market. Downtown has a lot of empty store fronts so we ate our meals at the hotel for convenience. Service and quality of the food was good but not the best in France. Our room was very comfortable, nice bedding, good sized and the shower leaked. Main complaint was that the lift was out and the construction started early in the morning. One night was good but would not stay longer.

    4
« Great location and period charm »

The hotel is comfortable with good sized rooms with all the usual facilities. Valet parking was swiftly and efficiently dealt with. Location is very convenient for the Cathedral and other key sights. Very good restaurant. Altogether a strong recommendation.

« Perfect Welcome to France! »

We arrived in France late Saturday morning, and drove directly from CDG to Le Grand Monarque in Chartres. Having only read a few reviews, we were not sure what to expect, but we delighted with our hotel. Chartres is a beautiful city, and Le Grand Monarque is perfectly situated. The hotel is located at the heart of Chartres and only a short walk from its famous cathedral. In the evening, Chartres lights up, and we were in a perfect location to enjoy the light show. The hotel itself is beautiful! We were so impressed with our rooms, which were newly remodeled, and finished with very nice fabrics and details. The rooms and bathrooms were very clean and the beds were very comfortable. And all with a very reasonable price. We had the sense of staying in a historic property, but with every modern convenience and update. The staff was extremely friendly and kind and welcoming. I only wish we had stayed more than one night.

    5
    « Great hotel »

I stayed here for 9 nights over a 10 night period (went away so stayed elsewhere for one night. Both halves of the stay were very good with the rooms well presented and all modern amenities. When I checked back in for the second half of my stay they had already taken my suitcase to my new room. Breakfast was very good with lots of choice. A 5 - 10 min walk formt he station and the same for lots of different restaurants. Only downsides was both hairdryers in the rooms had now power to them so spent longer than I would have done drying my hair. Also the rooms are different sizes so I had a nice big room the first half of my stay then a room half the size for the 2nd half but it still did the job!

« Beautiful hotel, very attentive staff and fabulous city! »

Chartres is an excellent point at which to stop over if travelling from Britain further south into Europe and this hotel makes the stopover utterly worthwhile! They valet park for you since the carpark is a short step from the hotel. The restaurant is Michelin starred, but if you need somewhere a little more modest, you are simply a road width away from the pedestrianised city area with great brasseries. The receptionist was full of information about the city, notably that during July to September the key buildings in the city are all fully lit with the most fabulous son et lumiere displays! The Cathedral, always worth a visit for its serenity, is lit on three different faces and the moving images of its history were spectacular. The hotel room was beautifully appointed. Honestly, the 'stopover' at this hotel became one of the high points of our holiday and we will definitely revisit.

« Enchanting suite Worth spending the night out of Paris! »

Delightful surprise to find the high end quality at a very reasonable price. Staff was above helpful. We stayed in Marie Antoinette suite. My favorite room on our travels all over France. Traditional with artistic flair. Beams, silks, daybed, chaise lounge, Pillows with painting parts, lovely bathroom and views of town. Close walk to Chartres cathedral that was doing the light show on all historic building in September. I would make sure this yearly event was going on when planing my trip. We are so happy we did not just take a day trip out of Paris. Food is unmatched and outside bar is a nice place to hang.

« Quality and convenient Chartres stopover »

If you are passing North/South and looking for a stopover in this neck of the woods, Chartres ticks a lot of boxes. The Cathedral is stunning and over the summer months they have a (free) nightly lightshow working on a loop around the key historical sights. This hotel is well located,in the centre easy to drive to and with valet parking. It's right on the edge of the pedestrianised historical area with short walks to the cathedral, the old streets and shops/restaurants. This may be a 'Best Western' but there is nothing in the feel and style (beyond an outside sign) that suggests 'hotel chain'. It has a lovely traditional character and the deluxe room we had was well appointed with a bath, two basins, large bath etc. - it was also pleasingly quiet for a city centre hotel, a lof of the rooms appear to overlook an internal atrium. Food options if wanted from the hotel are excellent from an outside bar, an internal bar, a nice brasserie located in the light and airy atrium through to a michelin starred restaurant (pre-booking recommended). The buffet breakfast is a combination of quality and quantity including a Nespresso machine and an electric fresh orange juicer. The standout as so many other reviewers have commented is the friendliness and helpfulness of the staff, their passion and pride made us feel very welcome. If the budget fits, this is an excellent hotel choice.

« Top class hotel with a traditional touch »

The room was comfortable and well appointed. All the rooms have been modernized although the hotel itself has a traditional layout. It is deservedly one of the top hotels in Chartes. The only drawback was that the Michelin starred restaurant was fully booked when we tried to make a reservation on arrival. Next time we will book the restaurant at the same time as the room. The hotel was very helpful in finding and recommending another restaurant for us which was nearby. We can recommend this hotel without hesitation

« Hard to find a better stopover place »

We travel regularly between the South and North of France, and we take always the opportunity to make a stopover in the many towns and villages on the west side of Paris, in the large Normandy area. More often than not, we like to stay in Chartres, and this hotel is excellent value. It is located in the heart of the City, but has (a very reasonable) valet parking. All rooms are very well equipped, although there are a few narrow "orphans" (in case of a last minute booking). There is a very nice patio that serves as brasserie, with a basic range of very nice dishes. Not surprising, if you know at there is also a Michelin-starred restaurant in the hotel... Breakfast is very unFrench abundant. After that, you can continue to drive for two days without hunger. Staff is among the most attentive and friendly you can find in France ??. The city centre, carfree, allows a leisurely stroll, with lots of small boutiques and terraces. Often, in the evenings, there is a lightshow against the backdrop of the city's monuments, including the must-visit Cathedral, recently fully restored. Also a good location when you wish to visit, coming from Paris, the Mont St Michel or the Impressionnists' Giverny village and Claude Monet gardens.

« Brilliant service, great room, great place to stay... »

My adult daughter and myself were doing a road trip throughout France in September and visited Chartres in September. Our trip was haphazard taking us where we wanted to go so therefore did not book hotels. We arrived in Chartres and all the 'normal' rooms were booked but the hotel offered us a Junior Suite at an amazing rate. They were so kind about the parking, luggage, eating... recommendations of things to do... They could not have been more helpful. We would stay there again and again and wouldn't hesitate to recommend it.

    « Bad restaurant »

I eat two nights at the restaurant while I was staying at the hotel. I was with a group of friends and we are vegetarians. We were very disappoited with our meal and with the treatment that the hotel concierge had with us. We are used to travel around the world and we were porely treated when we asked for our omelet to be exchanged after arriving smelling as fish. As you can imagine, being vegetarians, we do not want our food to smell like fish. The maître came to talk to us in an irritaded mood and we had to insist that they replace the plates that were bad. The meal was not cheap for what they served and we were guests at the hotel but we were not well treated.

    1
« Front desk ok and bad restaurant »

I traveled in sep 2016 with a group of friends throught out France and we stoped at Chartres. Le Grand Monarque is a central hotel and have a polite front desk personel. However, the restaurant needs a lesson of polite behaviour. Our group is vegeterian and we smell fish on some dishes. When we have requested to have prepared again 5 new omeletes, the waitress fricked out and the maître only decided make new ones after a long insistence. Very different from the well known "french service".

    4
« Great Location, Great Room »

Le Grand Monarque was a lovely hotel (with a Michelin starred restaurant), abutting the upper part of the old town. It is a very short work to the Cathedral. Our room was extremely spacious by European standards. It was quiet and clean. And it has some charm. The staff were incredibly nice and welcoming. I would definitely recommend this hotel to anyone staying in Chartres.

    5
    « What a great hotel »

I'm lucky (unlucky?) enough to travel a lot for business and as a result I stay in a wide range of hotels from seriously horrible cheap and dirty places to amazing and luxurious resorts (but only when they have great deals) - La Grand Monarque is one of my all time favourites. It combines fantastic service (everyone at the hotel is friendly, has a smile on their face and is happy to help), great clean and modern rooms despite being in an old building, a fantastic location a short walk from the cathedral and finally a great little restaurant. If you want somewhere to stay in Chartres, you won't go wrong if you stay here. PS It's also pet-freindly

    « 5th time here »

We always make a point of stopping off at this Grand old Duchess of a hotel on our travels from the south to the north. The staff are so friendly welcoming you back by name,we always opt for a superior double and this year had 120 which overlooks the front of the hotel i named it The Blue room due to it's stylish French interior. Comfortable beds very good showers and excellent service also a lovely spa at 15 euros a person and valet parking at 12 euros a night. Dogs also very welcome. This year we stayed 2 nights due to the Calais lorry protests and loved the place even more.

    5
« Top hotel, top service - fantastic town »

Our first stop on a tour round France - and what a find. Firstly the hotel stay could not do enough for us. Took the car to a very secure car park, made sure rooms were next to each other (family rooms but there are 6 of us). Took the time to explain the town and the evening event that was happening also. During the evening the local buildings (church, theater, bridges etc) are lit up and a story told with lights and or music. For a couple of hours at night you wonder round with visitors and locals alike. It was staggering. We loved it - and so did the kids. Def worth seeing. Town is also lovely, lots of shops and good places to eat. Def somewhere we will return too!!

« Great end to our trip »

We loved our last hotel!! Such a great location to Chartres!! We got to see the light show at night and the hotel staff was so accommodating. They were quite helpful. Our room was good, not large but quite comfortable. The breakfast was a good value and not too expensive. Stay here and go see the magnificent cathedral!!!

    « Delightful »

Generous upgrade from the category below to a lovely suite on the 3rd floor. Catherine de Medici. It was an oasis from the 38C Chartres was experiencing during our stay. Air con worked very well indeed. The suite was huge, very quiet and extremely comfortable, decorated with humour and we loved it. ( Okay we wouldn't have chosen the black furniture ourselves ! ) Very big bathroom with a good separate shower, oversized bath and all comforts provided including excellent lighting and soft towels. Maybe lacking a towel rail under each of the wash hand basins. Everything was Immaculately clean and sparkling with a Nespresso machine and a small fridge for our convenience. The suite was serviced once daily to a very high standard. I saw many rooms on this floor and all looked as if they had been recently refurbished except one perhaps which still had carpet rather than modern hard floors. They were all attractive and airy. Decor in the corridors is in need of refurbishment and the reception area is now so faded it looks grim. I believe these things will be attended to soon. Good self service breakfast of fruit, cold meats, cheeses, breads and particularly good local jams and honey. Hot breakfast items from the buffet. We ate both evenings in the Brasserie and dined we'll from a shortish menu. Desserts are fab and I recommend the Peach Melba ! Best thing about this hotel, I believe is that staff listen and act. Congratulations, you have a great " product ". Oh and Chartres is quite lovely especially with the sound and light show which takes about 3 hours to walk round to see everything.

« Amazing food, great beds, good hotel »

This hotel is as good as the savoy or the Ritz in places! As part of my job I get to go to incredible hotels and restaurants but was with my family and had heard good things of this hotel. It exceeded them in parts. It was overall a delight to stay here. We had had a delayed crossing from the uk so a 2.30pm leave London (Wimbledon) had become a 6.45pm local time arrival in Calais! Chartres was therefore a long and late drive - yet despite arriving after 11pm nothing was too much trouble. A parking space was sorted, bags taken to our room, food made available. Just brilliant! The breakfast in the morning was better than either the ritz or savoy to my mind. Same ultra high quality, fresh unlimited superb food, silver service layout cut glass crystal glasses, but done with French style and panache! The only question in my mind was how could this be a best western! I have stayed in some shocking American ones in the past.. Then I went to the bathroom in our room. 1970 pink and dated bath shower combo. This hotel is almost there but it needs a little investment in the small details of the rooms to make this an amazing hotel. The concierge, restaurant and main bedroom were stunning. Incredible comfortable beds. Great location. Just sort the bathrooms out. Also claims to be a spa. Did not see any evidence of this. The toiletries were poor quality. I would however stay here again if passing by Chartres as the food was out of this world!

    « Full of character! »

We chose this hotel based on the good reviews on trip advisor and it lived up to its reputation. It's quirky and a bit of a maze, but this really adds to the fun of it! We had a lovely modern room which was quiet and with a very comfy bed. The hotel communal areas are beautiful and breakfast was really good, enjoyed in the conservatory. I'm very happy to recommend this hotel to anyone visiting Chartres.

« A real treat to stay here »

This was my second visit to this hotel while en route to the south of France and I love staying here. It has the gel of a special hotel. The rooms are beautifully furnished with the most comfortable beds, and the breakfast buffet is the best I have ever had: so much choice of so many delicious things. Last year we didn't eat an evening meal at the hotel but this year we did, in the Brasserie, choosing the dishes of the day. It proved to be an outstanding meal. Each course was beautifully prepared and delicious; the steak was cooked to perfection. The hotel is also very well located, very close to the city centre. I look forward to staying there again!

    « pleasantly surprised »

Chartres was our preferred stop on our way to South Brittany. It is a lovely city, well renovated and still keeping the character of the old town. The hotel is very centrally located and only a short walk to all monuments. The reception was very friendly, they had a valet to park the car in their private lot. We had a suite, on the 3rd floor. The room was nice although the hotel could do with a renovation. Still, the bed was good and bathroom was modern. The only thing that bothered us is the noise from the floor above, everything somebody walks or moves a chair, the wooden ceilings would not temper the noise, and we had to use ear plugs to be able to sleep. All staff was very pleasant and extremely friendly.

« Very Nice Hotel in Chartres »

Chartres is a lovely town worth a visit. This hotel is on the main plaza and at the center of everything - tourist sites, restaurants, and shops. It was a former post office so is not the typical layout, but has been very nicely renovated. We stayed in the garden suite and it was lovely. Very spacious and a patio with a table and chairs. The hotel staff is very friendly and helpful, the food is very good and there is a large front patio where you can have drinks and watch the activity in the plaza. There is no parking at the hotel. You can pull up on the side street long enough to unload and then they have a secured lot about a block and a half away. You can access this yourself, or their valet will bring your car back and forth for you. That is the only real drawback of an otherwise lovely hotel.

    5
    « Dowager Empress »

The hotel struck me more as a dowager empress than a grand monarch - aged, but nicely, and working hard like Lady Violet to stay "with it." Our superior-class room was big, with a sitting area and a fireplace, and nicely period-decorated. A new elevator had just been installed, but the tiny ancient one was still working. Service was impeccable under Virginie's watchful eye. We learned six hours before arriving about needing to reserve parking but Lucy took care of it. Unfortunately the Michelin 1-star restaurant was closed on Sunday night but the brasserie was fine. It's across the square from the old town, ten minutes walk from the cathedral. If you like atmosphere, don't miss it.

    3
« Hotel rooms do not live up to reception area or Michelin restaurant »

Our room was small and had a poor view, the decor needs updating for the price that you are expected to pay. There was an awful sewage smell in the corridors during the morning, which you could smell in the breakfast area. I have tried to take into account the current poor exchange rate of 1.17 when considering value for money, but when I compare the cost of the breakfast at 16 Euros, it was poor, self service and not the best of quality when in other countries you would expect far more. Expect to pay local taxes for your room (3.3 Euros) and 10 Euros to park a car. For the value, I would get breakfast elsewhere.

    5
    « Absolutely faultless - highly recommend. »

We stopped over at Le Grand Monarque on our way back to the UK and we were so glad we did - what a fantastic experience! Our room was enormous and more like a suite with a lounge area which was perfect for our 11 year old to sleep in later whilst we had the biggest bed ever seen with a beautiful bathroom, complete with plush robes and upmarket toiletries. The staff could not have been more attentive if they tried including the fabulous receptionist who walked with us back to our car to ensure it was parked in a safe area! Nothing was too much trouble for anyone we encountered and it made us feel so special, it really added something extra to the end of an already excellent holiday.

« Could Have Been Much Better »

A nice looking establishment marred by high costs and poor service. The room was decent enough if a little old. However, we had to pay €15 per person per day for the Spa - it should always be included for hotel guests! Worse, we went downstairs to eat and were told that the restaurant was fully booking in a rather brusque manner. There was no attempt to direct us to bar food or even room service, just a dismissive attitude. Luckily we found a bistro nearby that was very nice to us. Finally, breakfast was charged at €16 each which is a bit rich, too. This is my second poor experience at a Best Western and I shall not be using them again. High costs married with poor service. Avoid.

« Excellent in all ways »

We stopped in Chartres for 2 nights and originally chose this hotel as it provided secured parking. On arrival, we were shown where to park temporarily whilst our bags were taken in. The concierge then removed our car to the secure car park. The check-in process was painless and the hotel itself is smart and all the staff were very polite and knowledgeable, advising us on things to do, sights o see, places to eat, etc. The room was a decent size and in the bathroom everything worked and sufficient toiletries provided. In previous reviews, some people have said that anything you need for your stay must be taken from the car before it is parked as there is no access until it is returned. This is not the case. We had forgotten some things in the ca; we were given the keys to our car and directed to where the car park is located. Once we had got what we had forgotten we simply returned the keys to the concierge. Checkout, was also smooth. By the time we had settled our bill our car was waiting for us outside. All in all, the Grand Monarque is an excellent hotel which I would strongly recommend.

    « Beuatiful old building »

We spent one night here en route south. We arrived really really late at night and were were kindly shown in by the night person. We had two rooms next door to each other. One room was very small but was for our two children so it was fine. they left a few sweets for them which was a nice touch. Our room was very big and comfortable. Both rooms were decorated in a luxurious classical style to suit the building. We had a very comfortable night here. Breakfast was served in the covered courtyard, a very attractive place and a joy to sit and eat in. The roof was removed after a while and we were then in an open courtyard. Breakfast was perfectly good. A very enjoyable hotel and I wish I had more time to enjoy it. Would love to go back and spend more time there. The old fashioned bar at the front looked very nice too.

We had a great time in a beautiful room . Lovely hotel to stay , very convenient as near the city centre and the cathedral . Has a fantastic restaurant attached to the hotel with a very high gastronomic level. Highly recommend the sommelier . He would find amazing local wines to complement your meal. Otherwise you have the Brasserie which is good too. Very helpful at the reception in order to explain the city's visit.

    « French stop over »

Stayed at the Monarque on the way to the Dordogne. It is a beautiful hotel in a superb location. We found the staff to be very helpful and certainly their English was far superior to our French. Breakfast whilst not cheap was plentiful and the pastries were lovely. We woukd certainly recommend and visit again

« A traditional hotel which shows its Best Western roots »

We stayed at the Grande Monarque on Monday last week (July 2016) on our way back to the UK from southern Spain. As others here have said, the hotel is situated close to the town centre. We weren't aware that we had to book car parking in advance (does anyone arrive in Chartres WITHOUT needing car parking??) and it was fully booked by the time we checked in. However, that was no problem, as there is an excellent, large, well-lit and secure underground carpark a few metres away. We had tried to book the Michelin starred restaurant in advance, but this being a Sunday night, it was closed, so we had to settle for the normal hotel restaurant. It was very busy, and the food was nothing out of the ordinary. Our room was on the first floor (second, if you're from the US), with a view of the ground floor roof, and was very small, made a bit more oppressive by very "busy" red patterned wallpaper. We were experiencing +30 degree Centigrade temperatures at the time, but the air conditioning coped well and the room was comfortable overnight. Breakfast next morning was the usual French buffet affair with lots of guests walking about serving themselves - not a particularly restful experience. I'd happily pay extra to have table service. All in all, the hotel did all that we could have expected and was reasonable value for money, but it's probably more descended from the Best Western side of the family than its Grand Monarque roots!

    « Great stay »

Beautiful hotel in the heart of this historic city. Gorgeous rooms and facilities. For extra charge a lovely spa. Children under 16 not permitted but got special permission for our granddaughters. Highly recommend. Our daughter got a larger room with couch/bed and spa bathroom. Staff helpful and very friendly.

« Beautiful but with shortcomings »

We stayed here during our visit to Chartres. The hotel is in a nice historic building just across the street from the historic center. The room was quite large but the bathroom was embarrassingly small, especially the separate room for the WC. There was no curtain for the shower!

« Traditional Hotel well worth visiting »

This proved to be a great choice - on the edge of the town centre, private secure parking (needs to be booked in advance), comfortable and friendly. Restaurant good, breakfast excellent, bed comfortable. Air conditioning and tea/coffee making facilities in room.

« Old Fashioned Charm Hotel in the centre of Chartres »

We had two rooms in this grand old hotel, one for a family of three, one for a couple. Our son's room was on the front of the hotel, very large accommodating a king size double bed plus a large double bed settee. It had a beautiful fireplace and views over the square. Our bedroom at the side of the hotel was much smaller by comparison. The staff were cheerful, always a smile, very helpful, answering any tourist questions, queries and suggesting the evenings luminere. The corridors were a bit of a maze but everything was clean and fresh smelling. There is a new elevator much larger than the old one. We ate in the Bistro and the staff were helpful as our young grandson only likes plain pasta and this was cooked, no trouble. We had sea-bass, cod, chicken and mushroom pasta all nicely presented and cooked. The following evening, my husband and I ate in the Michelin star restaurant. Tasty frogs legs, lobster just cooked and we finished with a souffle. I would have liked mine to be a bit more cooked as the inside was runny. I did mention this to the waitress when she collected our dishes, she just shrugged. When the bill came I wrote a comment to say I was disappointed with the souffle, but no-one came to ask me why!. And this a michelin star restaurant! They did their job but did anyone care? Mathieu the sommelier was very professional, also Frederick was particularly outstanding and an asset to this hotel.

« Good hotel and service. Great location from UK »

Stayed here for one night on our way south. About 3.5 hrs from Calais so an ideal location for getting a great way into France from the UK. Hotel accommodation and service were fantastic. Good central location for the town and just 10 mins from the cathedral. The light show in the town is also brilliant. Prebook parking if you are taking s car.. again the valet service is impeccable.

    « Grandiose Stay! »

We were blown away by this beautiful hotel. The word is really "grandiose". The building is majestic with so much history behind it. The rooms are modern and very comfortable. Quite large for European standards. The bedding was super comfortable and we had a good night sleep. When we first arrived, the concierge took our car and parked it for us at a cost of 6 Euros a day! Not bad! Especially, when we paid 26 Euros in St.Malo! The staff was so courteous and friendly upon our arrival. They gave us a map of the city and told us about the night lighting event. The location couldn't be better. Right in the center of town and within walking distance of all major sites. Our only regret was not being able to stay an extra night. Chartress was worth a two nights stay instead of one. Unfortunately, we were flying back home the next day. It was only one night, but we felt like royalty.

« Excellent hotel, great location »

Excellent classic hotel, with a perfect location for central chartres. Would class as a 4* hotel, with the hotel quality itself being part of the appeal, and definitely posher than our typical 3* Ibis and mid range hotel choices - and it showed throughout the hotel. At the top end of the 'best western' chain from my experience. Hotel is not overly modern but done to a high standard and the room and bathroom, were very pleasant. The corridors were a bit of a maze, but not unexpected for an 18th century building. The location is perfect at the edge of chartres downtown, 5 mins walk from the cathedral and the new town with its shops, the old town with its old streets and bars/restarants in between. We visited the lounge bar, but not the hotel restaurant - which we regretted after speaking to fellow guests the next morning. Service was excellent - multi-lingual, friendly and knowledgeable. Best of our entire french trip. Parking - 2 good options 1) Prebook with hotel is valet parking, park on kerb near sign on side road front left corner of hotel 2) Qpark chain large 24hour underground car park on square in front of hotel, which we used. Slightly more expensive than prebooked, but not unreasonable. Tip - If staying in summer/autumn take evening walk 'Chartres in Lights' from right outside hotel - the cathedral and old town sites are lit up spectacularly after dark. Hotel reception recommended and definitely worth it. Tip 2 - Old town walk has steep streets, if these are problem can still enjoy cathedral, shops, some bars/restaurants and lighting. just skirt the edge when streets steepen.

« Lovely hotel and a great and central location. »

This hotel is really lovely. Old fashioned charm and glamour right in the centre of Chartres. We had a room at the front which was a little noisy be sure to ask for a quiet room. Room was spacious and bathroom a good size. It is in one of the central squares and you can walk easily to see all the sights. The bar is lovely and opens late. The staff were especially helpful and particular mention to Kevin who helped us so much on arrival.

    5
    « Beautiful hotel »

We arrived mid afternoon after a fairly long drive and immediately the staff fell over themselves to help. The car was whisked away to be parked, reception checked us in immediately to a lovely room, far better than we were expecting in a standard double and fir a very reasonable price. The lady on reception took some time to explain about the town and the lumiere that happens every night. Whilst we didn't use either restaurant, both looked exceptionally good. We came back late on for a drink in the bar - amazingly cheaper than the bars and cafes in town! We checked out reasonably early in the morning and the car was brought round promptly. A small discrepancy on the bill was immediately rectified without a murmur. All in all, one of the best Best Westerns we've stayed in an we'd certainly stay again ourselves and thoroughly recommend it to anyone else in the area

« Ok, but thinks it is more upmarket than it is »

There are some pros- great location, comfy beds, opening window with a small balcony And some cons - rabbit warren of corridors, delusions of grandeur, small room, twin beds that are pushed together (what is the point of this- if you don't want to sleep together, you don't want to sleep together), aircon/heater noisy but can be turned off, decor is highly personalised and ott. Chartres is a fabulous town do not miss the light show, the market, the view from the cemetery and Maison picassiette

« Friendly, central location, great food »

Stayed here for one night on our way back from a vacation in Bordeaux. Nice hotel in an old building, apparently there's been a hotel on this site since the 17th century. Our room was smallish, but not so small as to be a problem, and the bathroom was large with his & hers basins and a capacious shower. Some of the hotel's features are a bit dated - lots of creaky floorboards and an elevator which looks like something from a 1950s film, but that looks as if it's being replaced so will likely be better in a month or two. The staff are lovely, friendly and helpful. Our room was at the side so was fairly quiet, I'd imagine some of the rooms at the front might be a bit noisier, especially if there are events on in the square opposite. The hotel's restaurant - Le Georges - is fantastic - I'll do a separate review of that - but it gets busy so if you're staying at the hotel reserve a table when you book your room. Parking is limited and like the restaurant needs to be booked in advance, it needs a valet, so make sure you take everything you need from the car before handing it over. A satnav is helpful to find your way around the Chartres one way system. The location is very central, just across the road from the pedestrianised shopping area and a few minutes walk from the cathedral and the old town. The breakfast is well above average for a French hotel I've stayed in some who don't really seem to care too much about the first meal of the day. They have a Nespresso so I got my morning caffeine fix, there was a wide selection of hot and cold items, and some really interesting preserves such as apple and pineapple jam plus several different types of honey. Overall highly recommended, I'd definitely stay here again.

    « Good location »

Well located adjacent to historical centre, this hotel is as advertised: a quality four star hotel. We booked a suite, which turned out to be an unusual but large room at the back of the hotel. Whilst on the ground floor, access to the room required going up one floor via stairs or small elevator, walking along a number of corridors before descending some stairs to the room. The suite had two main rooms, with a tiny additional room with a desk. The separate shower was near the bathroom but separate with access from a carpeted area which also had the wardrobe. The separate toilet was also off this area. Strange layout, but ok. King bed was comfortable and there was ample seating in the sitting room. There were two restaurants, the Michelin starred Le Georges (see separate review) and a casual restaurant. There was also a multi-room bar. Staff were generally pleasant and helpful, although the bar staff were content to stand behind the bar in one room talking to each other with only occasional monitoring of customers in the other rooms. Valet parking was available, although the garage is apparently limited in size, so advanced booking would be sensible.

    « Stop over »

A lovely hotel in a great central location, offering easy pedestrian access to all parts of this beautiful, historic city. There is secure parking at a nearby, underground carpark. Parking is available on site but is limited and must be reserved in advance (best done at the time of booking). Staff were all very friendly and helpful. Our room was modern, well appointed and very comfortable although at the furthest point away from reception, which for a couple of OAPs was a little inconvenient - it was quite a trek at the beginning and end of a long sightseeing day. Breakfast was excellent, though if you prefer something cheaper and more casual, there are plenty of eateries close by across the square, We enjoyed our stay in Chartres with its magnificent Cathedral and our choice of hotel added to our experience.

    « Misrepresented »

I booked a room in this nice hotel using Expedia. The room rate clearly stated "including taxes". I paid the amount at the time of booking. When I checked out the hotel manager insisted that I pay an additional sum for local taxes even though I was quoted an inclusive price. She said she did the same with everyone. This is obviously an unacceptable practice which over time must be quite lucrative for the hotel. Please beware.

« Old glory with modernized amenities »

In the heart of Chartres this hotel still preserves the pompe of old era while offers modern services, including valet parking on a moderate price. Some of the rooms are equipped with jacuzi. The free wifi is not working properly in the rooms when the traffic is strong (like in the evening hours).

    5
« Excellent hotel in a good location »

Good quality hotel with cosy bar, brasserie and Michelin restautant. Rooms may be a little like a rabbit warren but that does not distract from the comfortable beds, xcellent service and quality breakfasts

    « What a gem!! »

I picked this hotel based on the reviews and photos on trip advisor, and without shopping around. WHAT A FIND!! We were delighted with this hotel from the moment we arrived. The service was excellent, the rooms were beautiful and the location was fantastic. The staff were so friendly and helpful. The breakfast the next morning was lovely, the croissants were the best I have ever had. Highly recommend this hotel!

    « Excellent stay - a lovely hotel in a lovely place »

Booked easily some time ago using the Best Western website, our premium room was large, very well furnished and very comfortable - facing the Place des Epars, but quiet for all that. Check-in by friendly staff was efficient and there was an offer to park the car in the secure hotel parking located some 150 metres away. Cases appeared quickly in our room. We did not dine in the hotel, but breakfasts were expansive and good. Serving staff were friendly and helpful. A perfect stay

    « A hotel since 1634 »

Beautiful grand old hotel: plush velour, wrought iron, brocaded wallpaper and hardwood everywhere. Has tiny elevator and valet parking. Room, good sized, was beautifully decorated, had a small desk, minibar, kettle with coffee/teas, TV, WiFi, AC, plenty of places for luggage off the floor. Separate toilet. Big bathroom with tub/shower and two sinks. Staff was super. A lovely stay. Recommended.

« A nice hotel with historic touch »

Best-class and probably most established hotel in the city. Nice staff, good room condition, and decent restaurants (we didn't get a chance to test Le Georges, the one with 1-star Michelin rating as it was fully booked). Nice spa next door attached to the hotel but the access is from outside the hotel. Very small elevator in the hotel due to old building structure. Breakfast is ok at price of 15 EUR.

    « Love this hotel. »

We have stayed at this hotel several times and it is always a treat. The reception staff are delightful and go out of their way to help. We have slept in many of the rooms and they have all been well equipped and comfortable. Breakfast, although a little pricey, is delicious and varied. Chartres is lovely and it is a short walk to the cathedral where there is a good selection of places to eat. We will be booking again for July when we return from the midi Pyrenees.

« Le Grande Monarch Best Western Great location! »

We arrived mid afternoon to find our room was not ready for 30 minutes, so we parked our car( very secure) and grabbed a snack in the bar. Very classy lobby and bar, in keeping with the tradition of Chartres and the history of this hotel. We shared a croque monsieur with fresh chips ( truffle salt) that was delightful. Soon after we were escorted one floor up to a lovely room facing the front of the hotel and the square. We had prebooked, and at 100 Euros this is a bargain!! It is a short walk to the cathedral, whether you wind your way through the town itself, with cobblestone streets and loads of shops, or go directly out the door and to the left. We would recommend this hotel for a stopover in Chartres.

« Very nice Hotel in Chartres »

We stayed in Chartres for two nights to visit the Cathedral. This hotel is well located to walk to the Cathedral as well as other sites. The hotel seems to have a grand tradition, and at some point was bought by the Best Western chain. Fortunately, they have retained the Grand Hotel feel of the property with an elegant restaurant and bar. Our room had a very comfortable large bed and nice bathroom. The room had an air condition unit that we could control which made it quite comfortable. They have a typical breakfast at a reasonable price that was more distinctive than breakfast buffets at other chain hotels in France. The service was very attentive. I definitely would recommend this hotel when staying in Chartres.

« Excellent Staff, Great Location »

My wife and I stayed at the Best Western for two nights following our drive thru the Loire Valley. First, I would complement the staff being very friendly and helpful. Second, the location could not have been better. Valet parking is advised, costing only 8 euros per day. We also had lunch which was quiet good and reasonably priced. All-in-all, we would definitely recommend staying here when Chartres. Larry & Kelly, Georgetown,TX

    « Great Hotel »

We had a lovely stay here in this surprisingly delightful hotel. The reception arranged parking and the drop off was the most tricky part of the visit, with the hotel situated centrally to the large pedestrianised route around the square. Room at first offered was tiny and hot in the roof and the impression I had was this was the 'Booking .com' allocation, when we asked for another room although previously told the hotel was empty we were shown an old room again at the roof level in old decor. So we upgraded back to a decent room not in the 'Booking.com' allocation. Be warned! Generally the hotel is comfortable but these two rooms were not! Restaurant The George although a rather limited menu was excellent and the wine list was good as to be expected. Breakfast in the covered atrium was delightful and great choice, very good quality. We would definitely stay here again. A great shame about the awfully bad cleaning (desecration) of the Cathedral interior.

    « Back again... »

Still superb, in fact it's got better! Room spacious and comfortable, staff efficient, friendly and knowledgeable. Breakfast is excellent as well, in a pleasant dining space there is a wide variety of quality food from the buffet. Superb!

    « Very Nice Hotel »

This was our first visit to Chartres and we wanted to be walking distance to the Cathedral. The hotel was centrally located and also very close to the walking plaza of shopping and restaurants. The parking was a challenge, but we had asked in advance for the valet parking in the garage -- make sure to do so. I am not sure there is any other parking, but my impression is that you have to pre-book it in order to be sure there are spots. The parking was 8 euro per day. The room was very nice, but very small -- probably our smallest of the entire trip through France. But, the shower was great and did not flood the bathroom (this happened at many of our previous rooms). The bed was comfortable and plenty of heat. We would definitely return.

    « Another lovely stay »

We work in Chartres once a month and love it when we are able to stay at The Monarque as we feel it's a treat. The bedrooms are well equipped and spacious and the beds are fabulously comfy. Best of all we love the restaurant and always have something creative, innovative and delicious accompanied by very good service. Very pleased to return soon!

    « Great surprise »

We booked close to the fantastic Cathedral and the hotel was nice, well organised, great large clean room and to our surprise, a bar full of people having fun ! Great place. Not being a Chartres specialist, I was delighted of my choice.

    « Lovely hotel »

This is our second visit, and we weren't disappointed. The hotel is lovely and central for exploring Chartres, and the Spa is ultra relaxing and well maintained. The bathrooms seemed to have been recently modernised, but some of the other décor is a bit tired. Overall though, I'd recommend this hotel.

    5
    « Beautiful »

The suite we had was so beautiful I loved the colors it was so soothing and relaxing. Very comfortable bed could have slept the whole day away. I would recommend this place to anyone in the area. The lady at the front desk I believe went above and beyond for us.

    « A Wonderful Stay! »

My husband and I spent one night at this hotel. It is in a great location and we could walk everywhere that our short time in Chartres allowed. The staff are wonderful. Everyone that we spoke to were friendly and very helpful. One young man, Remy, went with my husband to show him where to park the car and the next morning, went with him again and helped him set up the GPS. Our room was lovely. It was quiet, clean and very comfortable. My only regret was that we didn't have more time to spend at this lovely hotel in this beautiful and historic city.

« Excellent hotel in a marvelous town »

This is a very handsome hotel at the edge of the medieval town. The building has a historic aura, dark wood and very good looking. Staff is cheerful and very helpful. Our room on the first floor was comfortable with good amenities. Room was kind of hard to find.

« Modern touches in a grand old building »

Our room was very comfortably furnished although there was no view out the window. Wifi worked well, staff were very friendly and courteous and the breakfast was very good. Crossing the Plaza from the Hotel, it's only a short walk through the old part of Chartres to the Cathedral and its world famous stained glass.

« Great hotel, wonderful staff, brasserie/ breakfast chronically under-staffed. »

We stayed here with ageing relations this week and are so grateful for all the smiles and kind service during our two night stay. Chartres is a wonderful city and the Grand Monarque is in the perfect location to walk across the square to the shops and cafés. In particular, I suggest Le Parisien, as a perfect brasserie, in which you can enjoy a typical Croque Monsieur or Plat du Jour. Take time to walk towards the Cathedral via the main road to the left of the hotel, here you will find a memorial amongst the garden that illustrates touching personal stories of Chartres residents from 1940/45. We did have several issues with our room, purely needing a better plumber to fit the new spa bath and shower in the bathroom. We dined at the brasserie twice and also had two breakfasts there. The staff in all cases are doing all they can possibly do to make the meals as pleasant as possible. There are simply not enough of them, therefore good practice is broken, empty plates are left on the tables when clients leave, piled up on decorative work stations next to diners or even left for ages at the diners tables. Management is there but instead of lending a hand they point and complain to the over stretched staff. At all times the restaurants are busy and popular, therefore the remedy is simple, employ more of the kind, attentive staff that they are undervalueing. In contrast, the lunch at the Michelin star restaurant, Le Georges was exemplary. All the dishes were beautifully presented and tasted divine especially the Grand-Marnier soufflé. The wine list is immense and it is perfectly possible to find one to suit your budget. We had champagne then a Chablis. All in all we had a happy, memorable stay, made so by the superb staff at the desk, restaurants, bar, cleaning the rooms and bringing the car to the front. A big thank you to you all.

    « Ideal »

Sure, you could say the red brocade corridor walls were a bit much, and the tiny elevator was a bit confining. But the location, room and facilities were excellent. If they seemed that way on the first two nights of a jet-lagged arrival from New York, it must be so. I was particularly impressed with their managing a late lunch for us on arrival in the central atrium-like area used for excellent breakfasts and hotel restaurant meals. The "menu" dish of fish was generous and beautifully prepared and immediately made us aware of why we value the food experiences of our trips to France. The one-star Les Georges is also on the premises and definitely worth a visit. I review that separately. The hotel was an excellent base for walking around the old town, visiting the cathedral and catching a bus for the short ride to the unforgettable Maison Picassiette. The staff was helpful in all respects. Wifi was decent.

« Great night stop in a great city »

Picked this hotel at random for a night stop on a long road trip. Great welcome, great service, very pet friendly hotel (had our dog with us) and great value. The free WiFi was good, as was breakfast. The hotel is well located for the town centre and of course the cathedral which is worth the visit alone.

« Marvellous - way above expectations for a Best Western property »

Maybe i shouldnt be so down on Best Western hotels, but it is not a brand I immediately associate with higher end properties. Perhaps with this preconception in mind i was very pleasantly surprised by this gem of a hotel in central Chartres. Great location, opposite the biggest underground car park in town (think to park towards the far end to be closer to the hotel, GPS will help), this hotel clearly is the best place in town, but doesnt act like it (service is still humble and attentive). Service is spot-on, staff are clearly well drilled and held to very high standards in terms of expectations of greeting, information to give, questions to ask etc. Rooms are well appointed with good wifi and great beds. Fitness centre is fine, the spa is small so if you are looking for a spa break double check their website to see what sort of thing they offer. There is a Michelin starred restaurant and an excellent brasserie, and breakfast is great and reasonably priced. All in all, this is luxury at 1/3 of the cost of what you would pay in Paris. Ideal for a weekend away.

    « Beautiful hotel & location »

This hotel was lovely and centrally located. We had a suite with high ceilings & great natural light. This was our first night after a red-eye flight from NYC and the bed couldn't be more comfortable! The robes and amenities were super comfy. We had cocktails at the bar/lounge that were wonderful and ate at their restaurant, which wasn't as great -- had to send my tuna back twice, and they still didn't get it right. Except for this meal, everything was simply wonderful!

« A professional hotel that has charm and ambience »

Located in a central location adjacent to the old town centre the hotel was everything we hoped it would be. From the point of view of an overseas tourist it was easy to access by hire car and was graced by experienced multi-lingual staff. In addition to the excellent dining and bar facilities the hotel featured an adjacent pool and spa. Unavailability of staff at critical times (ie pick up car) was a cause of concern.

    5
    « Gracious service »

This hotel is on a busy street, and we were only one floor above street level. The double pane windows did an amazing job of blocking out traffic noise. Our room was decorated in pale blue and silver, and was large and lovely with a hardwood floor. It was in the older section of the hotel. The bathroom was luxurious in white marble, and the bed was comfortable. They have a Michelin starred restaurant, but as we were there on a Sunday, it was not open. We ate instead at their brasserie, and had a very good meal. The staff was exceptionally helpful and pleasant.

« A very well located hotel close to all the city's major attractions. Great staff. »

The hotel is well located on the edge of the city. This was our second visit and we are glad we chose it. Staff were very friendly, helpful and suggested what to do in the city. Room is small but adequate. Breakfast was ok with enough selection to satisfy. Parking is a little distance from the hotel but valet parking is available.

« Beautifully restored, great location »

This historic old building is beautifully restored and oh so comfortable. Our room was very pretty and redone with quality. The bed is so comfortable and the limits are top-rate. You will not want to get out of bed! Be sure to explore the antiques in the hotel and have a drink in the lovely, cozy hotel bar. Plus , the staff are exceptionally helpful.

« Nice hotel, good location and good service »

We had a simple over-night stay and were very pleased with both the hotel and the restaurant. The room was small but well equipped and at a very fair price. We booked dinner at the Brasserie and were pleasantly surprised with both quality of food and service, also very good value.

« Beautiful stylish and comfortable »

Entering reception, the hotel clearly has the wow factor with its slighly faded glamour. Our room was on the third floor facing into the courtyard, decent size and beautifully decorated wth antique furniture, a large flat screen TV, tea/coffee facilities and a powerful hairdryer. The bed was super-comfortable. I have to recommend the fab cocktail bar; so atmospheric!

    « First class experience »

Owning a house in Charente we like to stop off on the way back to Calais to make a more comfortable trip. Normally we stay at average hotels but 20 years after proposing to my wife in the Loire Valley I thought this time she deserved a treat Well Le Grand Monarque certainly lived up to expectation, from the immediate confirmation on booking and double checking of requirements (flowers) and which restaurant we wanted to dine in I had a good feeling On arrival we were greated in a professional and personal manner, the type of welcome that makes you feel a guest instead of just a booking. The room was superb at the front of the building, some minor issues with a bath plug. The flowers were superb We ate in the brasserie and had a good meal, some confusion over the black burger as my wife asked for bien cuit but that wasn't possible (it is France) so she ordered steak and got a well done steak in the burger But thoroughly enjoyed it Service was attentive without being intrusive. And I've never had such a large creme brûlée I couldn't finish it. We then retired I walked the dog and admired the light show in Chartres. But when I got back to the room we were then treated to a front row seat to the display of high wire acts in the place des espars. Superb and words can't explain how amazing it was Breakfast was good, cooked items available and prepared in small quantities so always fresh And departure was again freindly and really made us feel we want to stay again

This is a classic hotel in the classic style in the heart of Chartres, a historical city some 90 k from Paris. We had an exceptional room, overlooking the main square which gave a grandstand view of the highlight of the celebration of the Son Et Lumieire. Expect an excellent breakfast and I feel we were the losers as we did not have an opportunity to enjoy a full meal in their restaurant.

« Worth staying here but not cheap »

Stayed for 1 night as we were touring France. Have a Best Western card so got an upgrade, couldn't fault it. Reception staff were very helpful and friendly and told us about the light show 27 places around the city which was worth seeing. Room included breakfast which was very good,if back would definitely stay again. Very central.

« Good Hotel but I'd probably eat elsewhere »

Stopped here on the way back to the UK. Very friendly and attentive staff; nice room if slightly small but good bathroom;cocktail far and restaurants on site. A recommended stay but we didn't think much to the restaurant where we dined because it was pouring down. Having been to Chartres before we think you could eat out better and cheaper, but the hotel is dead cnteal and we slept well.

    « Perfect »

Everything about this hotel was perfect. Everyone that works there was friendly, efficient and helpful. The room was beautifully decorated. The bathroom was very modern even had a lighted make up mirror. The location was right in the center of town within walking distance of everything. The hotel has convent parking also. It has an excellent restaurant too. The bed was one of the most comfortable I ever slept in.

positive excellent hotel with wonderful, helpful staff. Very varied choice at breakfast and good value for money didn't eat in the restaurant as it was fully booked while we were there negative very poor quality of wine in lounge bar

« Old Hotel Charm and Perfect for Exploring Chartres »

Our room was a 2 room suite with a modern bath, wifi and high quality linens. We ate dinner in their garden restaurant, where breakfast is served. Both meals were excellent!!! The location could not be any better. Tip for parking: Purchase a parking voucher when you make your reservation. Their private parking is a block or so behind the hotel....when you arrive, pull into the small street directly to the right of the hotel. There are 2 spaces so you can go into the hotel and their valet will park for you. The underground carpark is much more expensive.

« The Quality you expect from a Great Western hotel »

We stayed here for our last night in France, en route to Caen. Despite both the garage and Michelin star George restaurant being fully booked (Tip: book both in advance) the receptionist helpfully suggested an alternative nearby Bistro which is part of the GW group. Having spent the last 16 nights in 'strange' beds, all standard doubles, it was bliss for my 6'5" husband, and me, to be able to stretch out in a King Size bed and we both enjoyed the best night's sleep of our entire holiday. The bathroom offers both a separate shower and bath which I particularly appreciated as I use sticks so clambering into a bath to hold a shower-head is a challenge for me. We didn't take advantage of the gym or spa on this occasion, largely because our swimsuits were in the car which was a walk away, but it looked very tempting! (Be aware that the guest lift is tiny, so if you have large bags, do accept the offer for them to be delivered to your room by a porter!) We haven't visited Chartres since we became engaged here 40 years ago!! The same receptionist pointed out the illuminations, that now take place nightly between April & October, with 26 buildings lit with incredible interactive displays, some with musical accompaniment. We hope to return to Chartres long before another 40 years passes & we will definitely plan to stay at The Monarque BUT we will pre-book space in the garage & dinner in the George restaurant.

« Grand indeed. Especially at the price. »

The Best Western brand isn't always a guarantee of quality, but with the Grand Monarque, they've excelled themselves. It's a splendid building with elegant interiors, in the great tradition of big European hotels from the golden age of travel, conveniently situated just a couple of minutes walk from the heart of the city and the cathedral. But, unlike some establishments of similar vintage, it's been kept right up to date in terms of decor and facilities. I can't comment on the various eating and drinking options on offer, as I didn't use them. But they were clearly very popular, which must say something. And the staff were lovely (not always a feature of French hotels) - welcoming, attentive and very helpful. All in all, at less than £80 for the night, a real bargain.

    « Fab old hotel »

Stayed one night here and from start to finish the staff were fab. The hotel is an old building with traditional decor and great sized rooms. It is centrally located to the pedestrian area of the city. We didn't eat there, but it had two nice looking restaurants plus a bar. We had a drink before dinner in the bar and it was a lovely setting, again in keeping with the decor of the hotel.

    « Classic charme »

I used this beautiful hotel a lot in the past on business, and this time I visited while in Chartres for a short holiday with my teenage son. We both loved everything (well being in Chartres already is a plus!): attention to details in the full renovation that preserved the old hotel spaces, rooms and common spaces (charming and modern at the same time), top quality brunch under the glass roof courtyard. Staff is pretty attentive even if the young ones don't know much about what's going on around town (Saturday morning open market!). Only parking is difficult, having to offload right at the entrance - no stopping area - and go look for a space underground or on the side streets. However, don't be put off by the central square location, the medieval center is a few yeards away.

« Great food, great location, great staff »

Selecting good hotels in small French towns can be a bit tricky but this Best Western in Chartres exceeded all expectations. Yes, it's in an ideal position for visiting the cathedral, but despite being such an obvious place to stay, the staff from the manager down, were warm, friendly, helpful but also very highly professional. Of course having a Michelin starred restaurant gives them a certain "je ne sais quoi" - and the food was wonderful - but they still manage to remain relaxed and friendly rather than assuming the slightly pompous air that too often comes with one of those coveted stars! There's a lonely warm and intimate bar and some good cocktails. Just a slight pity that sitting outside is only possible on the pavement next to a busy road and traffic fumes. Solution - stay inside and have another cocktail before a great dinner!

« Bring on our next visit »

Our fifth visit to this lovely quiet haven. The usual friendly but efficient welcome whilst we booked in and then we were shown to our room. Each time a different room but all as lovely as each other. Furnished in character with lovely furniture and furnishings. Excellent bathroom facilities and large bath towels! As only a one night visit en route to Calais we ate in the hotel. It was a lovely evening so the tables were laid up in the courtyard. A small but wonderful menu. All food cooked to order and served by lovely waiting staff who recognise us. Advice on wine and other drinks was given without any pressure to up the cost too much. Every mouthful a delight and each plate a picture. Breakfast well displayed. Boil your own eggs, lovely fresh and dried fruit, cereals, meats and cheese, croissant and pastries all washed down by copious fruit juice and freshly made coffee. Everywhere spotless. Just beware if you have trouble on stairs, they can be twisty and narrow. Would thoroughly recommend this treasure.

« Fantastic stay, although only one night, but enough to leave a great impression »

We had one night at the Best Western Grand Monarque and I was gutted we had to leave. Having been delayed on the shuttle for 4.5 hours, we didn't have much time when we arrived. Admittedly, the hotel is tricky to find because it's literally on the pavement and the sign is so high up that we completely missed it. Plus you are on a main road and aware of people behind you trying to get past. You have to park down a little side street, offload your car and then hand the keys over to be valet parked. However, the welcome we received was very professional and friendly and the staff all spoke very good English. The hotel is beautiful and the decorations inside, very grandeur. We ate at the Bistro de la Cathedrale, which sadly didn't live up to our expectations. However, the light show on the Cathedral itself was beautiful and quite moving. It was such a shame we didn't have longer there. The hotel is situated opposite the town square where there are fountains and a sculpture. The children played in the fountains at night and there was a lovely fun but relaxed feel to the place. The room was clean and the beds were comfortable. We had a double room with a sofa bed for the children and the room was big enough for all of us with separate WC and separate bathroom. There was a mini fridge in the room too. We went down to breakfast the following morning which was fine; bog-standard continental, nothing cooked. All in all a very pleasant stay, albeit a rather brief one but we would definitely go back!

    « Love this place! »

Classic French hotel in a historic manor house. Beautiful interiors, and spacious rooms. The beds - linens, pillows immaculate and comfortable. Good size bath-tub for soaking away after a long day out. Upon our arrival, we enjoyed dinner at La Cour, one of the restaurants in the hotel. Very nice place, and we were fortunate to have our family of 6, seated in a private dining area. The prices were reasonable and the food was really good - fresh ingredients and well prepared. The other restaurant, Le Georges, is a Michel star gastronomic experience, but we wanted a more informal dining experience, which we enjoyed at La Cour. There's also a bar with an outside seating area in front of the hotel, facing towards the village, where we enjoyed a digestif after our meal. The "Lights of Chartres" was visible on a beautiful monument almost next to the hotel, which we enjoyed watching while sitting there. The Chartres Cathedral, is not clearly visible from here though, but a short walk and you're inside. Very friendly staff, and always willing to help. The hotel is situated within walking distance to many good shops in Chartres. It's very easy to walk anywhere from the Hotel and remember the shops close anytime from 12 to 1pm for lunch. I will definitely stay at Le Grand Monarque again. Highly recommend this beautiful Hotel, for its location, service, food, class, room comfort, cleanliness and attention to detail.

« The perfect way to end a three week vacation in France »

Chartres is an beautiful town/city and Le Grand Monarque is ideally situated to make the most of your stay there. We had an great stay, from the warm and professional welcome at reception to the well trained waiting staff overseeing a lovely hearty breakfast. We will definitely plan to stay there again in the future and recommend this hotel to our friends.

« Excellent Hotel in the heart of Chartres »

This is a very good hotel in the heart of Chartes. The rooms have all been modernised and are very comfortable. The quirky nature of the lift and the corridors reminds one of the original hotel. We went to the George restaurant which is an excellent Michelin starred restaurant with prices to match. Opposite the hotel there is a big square which clearly hosts events from time to time. A multi-storey car par lies underneath it and that is where hotel guests have to park unless they are very lucky. The one drawback is there is no proper place to draw up and off load baggage. This should be sorted out for a hotel of this quality. Still we recommend the hotel and would definitely stay there again

    « Great Hotel »

We sadly only stayed one night. Staff helpful and facilities all very good. Reception staff and the Car Valet were particularly helpful & efficient. Well placed for all aspects of Chartres and easy access by car. Best Western at its best.

    « Just excellent! »

If there's a better hotel in Chartres, I should be surprised. Le Grand Monarque is perfectly situated in the centre of town, close to shops, restaurants, historic sites and, best of all, the magnificent cathedral. Our bedroom and bathroom were very comfortable and beautifully equipped with everything we could possibly need, including bottled water and, unusually for France, tea- and coffee-making equipment. The buffet breakfast was delicious and extensive, catering for all tastes. The hotel car park was conveniently nearby. The staff were unfailingly helpful, and everyone offered generous support when our car refused to start the following morning. Merci très bien à tout le monde! I look forward to returning and to staying for longer next time.

« A four star rating just for the staff »

This hotel is in a perfect position. the staff could not be friendlier, from the valet to the bar staff everyone was great. The only problem was that we were put in what I assume was the family wing. Our room did not resemble any of the photos online and there was no window in the bathroom. Why do hotels assume that families do not expect high standards. It is a shame and we would have happily paid for one of the reconditioned rooms but nothing was offered at check in.

« Another night in Chartres »

Spent another enjoyable evening in the Grand Monarque which is situated in the very centre of Chartres. Although my trip was work related the hotel would be ideal for a short holiday as you are well placed for cathedral etc.

« Good location for fountains »

We stayed earlier this month for 3 nights and were extremely happy with our choice of hotel. One of the reasons for choosing the Grand Monarque was the secure parking for the car which was a short walk down the side road. The standard of food and service in the Brasserie is extremely high and we chose to dine here on two occasions. We also finished the evenings with drinks in the outdoor seating area of the Madrigal Lounge whilst enjoying the light show on the neighbouring buildings and the lovely fountains in the square opposite the hotel. We thought that the city of Chartres is very beautiful and would highly recommend a visit to anyone touring that area. We would definitely choose to stay at the Grand Monarque again if we return to this area of France.

    « Great Stay »

Really lovely hotel. Good value for money. The decor in the bedroom was impressive. We loved the lighting. The bed was really comfy. The staff on reception were very friendly and helpful - they were very keen to show off their city and gave us lots of advice on where to go. They were especially proud of the many Lumieres around the cathedral and the low town. Very enjoyable experience.

« Outstanding Value for an Outstanding Hotel »

We just completed a 4 week trip to Germany and France and stayed in 10 hotels/B&B's. This hotel was definitely the nicest place that we stayed in and also the best value for our money. The room was large with a king sized bed - unusual to find in Europe in this price range. Unfortunately, we only stayed for one night but did have a drink in their comfortable bar. We did not have their breakfast which we considered to be expensive at 15 euros. The person who helped us with our car and luggage was also great in spite of his limited English speaking ability. It cost 8 euros to park our rental car in their garage which we considered to be reasonable. Overall, a great value in an outstanding hotel.

« Continues to be the best »

We have stayed at Grand Monarque for many years and are still so pleased with the excellent service of the staff and the comfort of the attractive rooms. Easter dinner was elegant and delicious. It is a quick walk to the cathedral and close to all the shopping and flower market of this lovely city. Extra room amenities like coffee and water made the stay convenient.

    « A weekend away Christmas shopping »

We had a thoroughly enjoyable two night stay at this hotel. Our room overlooked a quiet side street and was very clean and cosy. There was a lively buzz in the lobby bar which we enjoyed, the hotel staff were very friendly and helpful providing excellent service when you wanted it. One of our nights we ate in the Bistro where we found the menu to be very good and the service was excellent but discreet allowing you to enjoy your meal and talk with your fellow diners. The hotel has an excellent location opposite one of the main squares which leads into the main shopping area and the Cathedral. Would stay again in this hotel if in the area.

    « Chartres »

An excellent hotel. Good service, attractive decor, comfortable, the staff is friendly. It is also centrally located to the railroad and the cathedral. We were pleasantly surprised to find the style of the building authentic, and nothing like the cookie cutter approach that regrettably some US Best Westerns utilize.

I regularly travel to Chartres with work, The Grand Monarque is in a great position in the centre of town which means that all the tourist attractions as well as local restuarants are on the doorstep. The service and facilities never let me down and its always a pleasure to stay there.

« Good luxury for the price »

We wanted to go catch this year's edition of Chartes en Lumière over our anniversary, and the Parvis where we stayed last time was booked. What the heck - it was our anniversary - so we booked the top of the line room at the Grand Monarque for 220 a night including breakfast. The "Suite" is actually not in the main part of the hotel - it's on the ground level of an attached house at the back. It has a terrace that faces the back garden of the attached spa. It's HUGE. Lovely sitting room, large bedroom with king size bed, separate shower with rain shower and hand nozzle, separate toilet room, and a large bathroom with tub and another shower and twin sinks. Marble everywhere. Complimentary robes and slippers. Complimentary Nespresso coffee. Very quiet, and the bed was very comfortable. Just be advised it's a loooonnng trek through the hotel on the first level, then down a flight of stairs to get to it. We did get to peek in several rooms being made up, and we wouldn't turn our nose up at any of those, either. Several others have raved about the breakfast, and we would have to heartily agree. Nice cosy bar with generous pour on the drinks, though a bit pricey. Also had a nice lunch in La Cour Brasserie - the daily menu is a good deal and nicely prepared. And for the grand finalé, we had dinner in Le Georges where we spent 200 Euros for a scrumptious 3-course meal and wine pairings. It compared favorably with the "gourmet" meals you can find in Paris where you pay 200 Euros and up EACH. Definitely worth a try if you're up for a gastronomic experience at a reasonable price. We'll probably pick this again the next time we decide to spend a few days in this charming town southwest of Paris.

    « Excellent hotel »

Excellent hotel! Approx 5mins walk from Chartres city centre. Service, food and room were all great. Only negative comment is that it is not clear from the Best Western (UK) website that car parking spaces need to be booked in advance. Hence when we arrived, there was no place to park our car. This was sorted very quickly and efficiently by hotel staff, but we understand that on most occasions in peak time that this would not have been possible.

    « Chartres France »

Best Hotel in town but not the cheapest, centrally located with great food and staff. Its ideally located for the centre of town close to Railway station and there is an underground carpark right outside the hotel if your travelling by car. On site fitness and also swimming pool with sauna etc, but an extra charge for this !

    « First Class Hotel »

The hotel is located on a pleasant plaza just a short walk from the Cathedral and historic district. The lobby and public areas are beautifully presented and the bar is very beautiful as well. The staff greeted us very cordially and were friendly throughout our stay. The breakfast was well presented and of the highest caliber. Everything fresh. We would definitely stay again when in Chartres.

    « One night Stay »

We found the hotel very comfortable and the service impeccable. The room although a bit small was clean and the bed very comfortable. We have stayed at this hotel a few times and have always found the food excellent, but this time we ate in the Brasserie, my wife's steak was so tough she could not eat it and my Steak Tartare was cheap beef not steak, not what we expected. It was a shame because we went out of our way to stay there having enjoyed it so much in the past
