Your hotel in Vilnius
Seat of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania, Vilnius is home to many religious buildings of all faiths: Jewish, Catholic, Christian, Protestant and Orthodox. The Palace of the Grand Dukes proudly bears witness to the whole history of Lithuania with its medieval layout and unusual architecture. Be sure to visit it, if only to admire the many objects on display, such as earthenware stoves, tapestries, jewellery, armour and coins. Admire Gediminas Tower, which has become the symbol of Lithuanian independence.
If you step through the door of the Telia NonMuseum, virtual reality enthusiasts can discover Lithuania in a different way by visiting its main sites with headsets.
Continue your climb along Pilies Street, or Castle Street. You are entering the heart of the medieval city. Lined with palaces and houses, this street reflects the whole city: at once classical, Baroque and Renaissance in style. Gedimino Prospektas is a chic, modern avenue, the equivalent of the Champs-Élysées, which will lead you to the cathedral.
Rightly nicknamed the « city of a hundred churches », Vilnius boasts a considerable number of religious buildings, whether Baroque, Gothic or more modern. It would be almost impossible to visit them all, but the jewel of the Gothic style remains the Church of St Anne with its beautiful Baroque altar. As an anecdote, Napoleon Bonaparte wanted to dismantle it and take it to Paris, which tells you how much this church is worth a detour. Finally, the Gate of Dawn is a true symbol of Vilnius. It houses an icon of the Virgin Mary, making it a place of pilgrimage for many worshippers.
Carry on to the bohemian district of Užupis, often compared to Montmartre. Sculptors, jewellers, painters and artists of all kinds have found refuge here. During the day, all is calm, relaxation and pleasure, with many green spaces and the Vilnia river as a backdrop. But when night falls, festivals, shows and literary events take centre stage. Constantly buzzing, the district always has something new to discover.
