Your hotel in Albuquerque
A sprawling city, Albuquerque is best discovered through its malls and by strolling along its long avenues. The mountains in the background provide an absolutely striking and unusual setting. Make the most of your American road trip by starting with a visit to the old town. Old Town is a must during your stay because of its unique character. A small, well-preserved tourist district, the old town surprises with its round shape, its 18th-century remains and its pink and ochre hues. A bandstand, small squares, local produce shops and a large church await you. Picturesque and very lively, Old Town will charm you and immerse you in its unique, timeless world.
Art lovers will enjoy the city museum, and there is also the rattlesnake museum, with vivariums full of various species of snakes. While the snake reigns supreme in this museum, there are also effigies of Crocodile Dundee as well as a few toads and tarantulas. Enough to surprise young and old alike. In the evening, Old Town pulls out all the stops, and it is pleasant to dine in one of the Mexican restaurants to savour sopapillas or any other local culinary speciality.
On the outskirts of Albuquerque, three hillside sites deserve your attention. Drawings carved into the stone, or petroglyphs, 400 to 700 years old, can be admired there. Most of the writings have a religious intent, but the mystery remains complete.
Finally, a quick visit to the Breaking Bad filming location is a must during your stay, before grabbing a snack on the utterly iconic Route 66. Jukebox, gargantuan portions, burgers and a big map of the USA, all in a 1950s atmosphere: you're not dreaming, you really are in the United States. And if your holiday coincides with the festival dates, Albuquerque, as the world capital of hot-air balloons, treats all visitors to a mass balloon ascension over the city. It would be a shame to miss this incredible spectacle.
