A Memorable Hotel Experience
A Memorable Hotel Experience
We have been using this hotel for many years and have witnessed a sad decline in the services available, for example the restaurant closing, breakfast being unavailable and the bar being closed. Also, the previously welcoming staff have been replaced by others that are distinctly unfriendly and give the impression that they don't really want to be there or cannot be bothered to deal with any visitors and their requirements. Sadly, this decline would seem to be terminal which is a great shame as the hotel being close to the ferry port it was an excellent place to stay on passing through. It cannot now be recommended for any services or facilities visitors may want and is best avoided in future.
TWe booked the hotel as a nights stay before taking the ferry. We wanted a clean hotel with WiFi and simple meal at the end of a long drive. This hotel advertised all of these things. When we booked the hotel it showed they offered food in the evening. On check in I spoke to female manager/ receptionist in French. My French is good and I had managed all holiday to not only converse about basic things but also make small talk. I tried to engage with the woman on reception but she was very rude and didn't want to chat accept tell me the basics of our stay. This was very different to the the way she was with other guests both before us and after. They were French and we were British. I can't see how else we could have offended her. I enquired about wifi and food being available in either a bar or restaurant and she snapped at me that they had no restaurant or food on offer. She said the nearest place to get food was either Carrefour or to go into Ouistreham. I was told there was no WiFi. We went to our room to try and find out if we could get some food delivered or the nearest restaurant we could walk to as we didn't want to drive again. Our Son who was staying with us is disabled and needed to eat. We had very little phone signal so couldn't search for food options. I went back to reception to see if I could get better signal and while I was sat there a French family were asking the same receptionist if they had WiFi. I over heard her say they had a problem with the phone lines and there was no WiFi in the rooms but they could have the password so they could access Internet in foyer. She did this repeatedly for French guests but told every British family there was no WiFi in hotel. I managed to find a local shop that I could easily get to and buy a picnic for my family. I rushed out before they closed and when I returned I was told I couldn't take food or drink to the hotel room (sandwiches and bottles of drink, nothing messy). If we wanted to consume the food we would have to go outside. I went outside and waited for my family to join me. While waiting numerous British families walked past me and chatted saying they were going to find restaurants because the rude receptionist had said they didn't do food at the the hotel despite thinking it did. My family joined me and we ate outside. When we had finished and were getting ready to go back to our room we were disgusted to see that inside there were several French families all tucking into meals that
The hotel is modern and clean, tge staff are exceptional. Ideal overnight stay for the ferry. Only a 15 minutes walk to bars and restaurants. Lovely, small swimming pool. Plenty of choice, hot and cold fir breakfast.
When I saw the travel award for this hotel I was disappointed, specially because we didn't experience the 3 stars this hotel is. Stayed for 3 nights and the entire time we were not able to connect wifi. In order to use internet we had to go to the McDonalds near by to use the internet. Staff were not helpful about the issue. THE HOTEL NEVER MENTIONS IN DESCRIPTION ABOUT IN INTERNET NOT WORKING, and they should because we asked other guests and they had the same issue. THE ROOM. It looked nice and clean, only to find out that the next 3 nights we slept in the most uncomfortable bed that sunk in the middle, nothing flat about this old, overused bed. The water in the shower was so hot I couldn't even rinse the shampoo out of my hair. Water never came out cold at all. The stay in this hotel was not a very pleasant one. I am sorry to say.
Stayed for 4 night with a group of friends on a biking tour and found the place faultless, though bigger rooms would have been a bonus. Breakfast was good and staff couldn't be more helpful. Bar was well stocked , reasonable prices and very welcome in the evening.
Only a one night stay but was impressed with the offer, everything was spotless and very comfortable. Given Room 1 which had recently had a makeover so no qualms there. Left pondering over the white box in the desk top! Staff we met were brilliant. Can't comment on food as we had an early sailing so no time for breakfast and in the evening just wanted something light so walked the 5 minutes to LIdl to get a salad and a beer. Car parking was good and convenient. Would stay here again.
Stop off after arriving at the Ferry Terminal. Just a short drive from the ferry which was very convenient. Check in was easy and receptionist was very friendly and helpful. There was a restaurant attached to the hotel but it was a Saturday so we drove to the Carrefour very close by and bought a couple of salads. Breakfast was excellent and the individual tongs at the table to serve was an excellent idea. Checkout was quick and again, the staff at this hotel were excellent.
I made an online booking for this hotel and, unfortunately, made a mistake with the date. I attempted to correct my error within minutes by telephoning the hotel. As it was Sunday the receptionist told me she couldn't over ride the computer without a manager present I rang again on Monday morning but the Front desk manageress refused to change the date and refused to refund my money. In fact she was quite unpleasant. The date I booked was 26th June at about 12 noon, which was the date entered in error. All she had to do was change the date to 21st July but she told me the terms and conditions state that I could only cancel 24 hours before my booking and I was classed as a “no show'. Both reasons being impossible and unreasonable and she actually acknowledged she knew what had happened. As you might expect, I have an extremely low opinion of this hotel and, while I did not stay there, can only alert people to how they may treat other potential clients.
Unfortunately the concept of customer service has evaded this hotel. Its so poor I feel I have to warn others. This hotel to be avoided at all costs and the staff need to undertake some hospitality training. Having the receptionist at the and of the phone shout and refuse to listen is like banging your head against a wall. if you value your sanity avoid this place.
Good stopover while travelling through Normandie. Nicely decorated room with small bathroom. Friendly and professional receptionist. Nearby there's a petrol station and small shopping centre with two supermarkets (Carrefour and Lidl).
Reliable clean quiet hotel for a one night stop to catch the adjacent ferry to the UK with plenty of free parking, small bar and premier inn type facilities. Friendly staff, small bathrooms with flexible floors!
Booked for one night stay before ferry crossing based on the good reviews, and paid a lot more money than anywhere else during our France/Spain holiday. I wasn't impressed. The room was decent enough for a 3 star hotel, clean but some maintenance needed. The staff were unfriendly and unwelcoming, close to what you'd expect from underpaid and overworked staff at budget 2* motorway hotels. On the plus side, we did have a good night's sleep and got to the ferry terminal in 5 minutes drive in the morning. But I don't think the convenience of being close to the ferry is worth paying 4* prices for 2* services.
We stayed here for one night before our crossing to Portsmouth. Ideally located for the ferry, two minutes, the hotel is a little gem. The staff are exceptional, the rooms more than adequate, the pool is a bonus and the breakfast was plentiful.
Apart from the pool not opening before breakfast and no tomatoes on the breakfast menu, it was superb. The staff were very friendly and very helpful, especially Melanie. The adjoining restaurant was also excellent but you do need to book a table in advance.
The Mare O'Poisson,Best Western is very conveniently situated in Ouistreham. Has an excellent restaurant attached but the town is in walking distance. The rooms are clean and spacious. All the staff are very helpful and friendly and go the extra mile to help you. We have been staying here on our way to France and back for quite a few years now and would absolutely recommend it. It also has an indoor swimming pool.
We stayed here to visit the D Day memorials and Hermanville cemetery. Michelle on reception was fantastic helping us with various things throughout our stay. Room was small as was bathroom but totally adequate. Comfy bed and quiet at night, room cleaned daily. Nice selection at breakfast would stay again as Only 5 mins from ferry port.
Brittany ferries were having difficulties in services due to the late return from dry dock of one ferry and the other limping along on 3 engines. Instead of an overnight crossing, we had to take an afternoon crossing which was then delayed by 3.5 hours. We booked into Mare o Poissons for an o/n stay Thank goodness we did. 24 hour recepetion and a cheefrul greeting when we eventually arrived. Very comfortable bed, perfectly adequate room, quiet setting and an excellent breakfast. We will return some time I'm sure.
A lovely place to overnight before or after using the UK ferry to Portsmouth with a great English breakfast. The proximity to the terminal especially with the late evening return (5 min) is very helpful.
Proximity to ferry port, secure gated parking and very friendly staff. Good hotel a few miles from the ferry port with late check-in. Very pleasant lounge area with small bar. Rooms are clean and well appointed. Dog friendly.
There are hotels closer to the ferry port, if you are using this hotel as a night stop before taking the ferry to the UK. However, this hotel is our preferred option as the rooms are clean, spacious and the beds are very comfortable. Had we arrived earlier we would have used the pool which looked very inviting. Tea and coffee facilities in the room- always a plus. A fridge would have been nice too but unusual in France. Very nice staff and a pleasant bar area where we chilled after dinner. Wanted to eat at the restaurant but it was full, so can't comment on food.
The hotel was very pleasant, the staff were very welcoming, the receptionist especially, breakfast was average but it was really nice to have someone cook eggs, We had a meal in the restaurant the night before and it was one of the best meals I had eaten all trip. The presentation and service was excellent and I would definitely stay here again just to eat in the restaurant, in the current climate I would book if you want to eat.
The hotel is definitely one of the best in town. Nice rooms and ok breakfast. The main feature of the hotel is definitely the restaurant which punches above its weight. If you stay here make sure to have dinner in the restaurant, you won't regret it.
Stayed for four nights at this well located hotel, just minutes from the ferry port. Lovely clean and spacious room and no noise heard from other rooms or guests. Staff were all very friendly and pleasant. Good breakfast and the restaurant attached was well worth a visit. Top food at reasonable prices and again, very friendly staff. Hotel has a nice bar where you can end a long day around a fire in comfortable armchairs. If using the ferry or visiting the beautiful Normandy countryside and the many WW2 sites, this hotel is well worth the stay.
The staff were very friendly and efficient. Great location for the ferry port and easy parking. Modern very clean rooms with all necessary facilities for an overnight stay. Very comfortable large bed and room size larger than normal for France.
We stayed for one night stop over ready for catching the ferry next morning. Good secure parking. Good size rooms, clean and tidy. The food was very good in the adjacent restaurant. The staff were very helpful.
I have written many reviews on this hotel. All have been awarded the highest category I can find. No other hotel gives the excellent service the staff provides at La Mare O Poissons. Keep up the good work.
We stayed here for 3 nights and were met by a very serviceminded hostess, speaking english. The rooms are clean and quiet, and the pool was perfect for our children to play in. The restaurant served beuatiful dishes, but lacked taste. The breakfast was okay. We stayed in ground floor with a view to the parking lot. Not charming. The staff was very kind. Great location for driving around i Normandy experiencing D-day. At the moment there's a camp for fugitives around the corner, but they didn't disturb us.
We stayed here for 1 night en route from the Vendee to Ouistreham ferry. Nice hotel. Lovely room. Very clean. We didn't make use of the indoor pool but it looked ok. About a mile out of Ouistreham centre and surrounded by parks with loads of apparently itinerant males - we had no problems and it's certainly not the hotel's fault but....? The adjacent restaurant is very good but separate from the hotel itself. Would happily come back for an overnight stop. Very attentive staff. Adrian and Helen.
We have stayed at this hotel before, since then a pool has been added. The rooms are a good size and have modern decor. The best thing is Claudine is still working there, as she is so helpful and runs the hotel splendidly. We went to the restaurant this time as well and were not disappointed. We will certainly stay here again.
We were made very welcome despite staff being clearly overworked; tending to reception, bar, snack bar and everything in general. Lesley particularly took time to help and advise us. The room was pretty basic but pleasant enough, though a second pillow would have been nice. Handy for the ferry port and a short stroll into the lovely town of Ouistreham.
I booked this hotel for its location. We got more. We were a late check in and the girl at the front was smiling and greeted us when we walked in. Quickly checked us in so we could rest. The room was nice, comfortable and clean. The breakfast was good. Eggs, bacon, pancakes and so much more. I would highly recommend this hotel to anyone looking to stay in the Normandy area
Stayed here as part of Briitany ferries trip and was a slight disappointment compared to the two previous hotels. The rooms were quite small with a tiny shower cubicle but for an overnight stay just adequate. The facilities were fine and it was a short walk into town. The staff were lovely and we received no end of help from Claudine on reception! Breakfast was very good, a clean modern hotel for a short stay.
We used La Mare as a centre for a cycle trip with friends, since it is nice and close to the ferry port. Found the staff to be very warm and welcoming, and happy to share their local knowledge, and attentive when sitting in the bar unwinding (us unwinding, not the staff!) Standard buffet breakfast fare which was enough to keep us going for 50-60 mile rides each day (though we also sneaked some of the pastries into a napkin for later). Staff opened up the pool area for us one day, when we came back from a particularly long day in the saddle, just what these weary bones needed. They were also happy to put our bikes in secure storage area so we didn't need to keep them in the rooms. Only potential downside would be the number of immigrants seen outside on the main roads, but they never appeared to come into the hotel grounds at all. To be fair, they seemed to stay closer to the port where the traffic bottlenecks are (and the Gendarmes). Nevertheless, I'm glad we didn't need to leave our bikes outside for temptation. I'm sure we would stay here again if planning another trip in the area.
Booked for 2 nights and as ferry was delayed ,arrived at midnight, staff very helpful and got us a drink from bar. Room very nice and comfortable, bed is large and comfortable to. Day staff also very nice. Eat in restaurant attached although run separately, food excellent. Secure parking,so overall an excellent stay. Only downside is large groups of migrants on traffic islands nearby.
Warm and friendly welcome. Very pleasant and very clean room with view over pool. All the amenities necessary for a comfortable night's stay. Very convenient for the ferry port and a 2 minute drive to town centre to find restaurants [if you don't want to eat in the hotel]
We stayed here one night before catching the morning ferry. It is only 3 or 4 minutes from the terminal but is very quiet. Staff are very helpful and the room had everything we needed. A very good buffet breakfast is served from 6.30am so there is time to eat before setting off. The restaurant is very good but is run independently and booking for dinner is strongly advised as we saw people without reservations turned away.
We spend a very pleasant night here and although we arrived late we were given a warm welcome and, after getting settled decided to have a nightcap in the bar. The environment is very tastefully decorated with big white squishy couches and armchairs and a modern fake fire and other modern decoration in black and white. The room was clean and comfortable as was the bathroom. As we were only there for a brief overnight we didn't have a chance to use the restaurant or the pool - which looked quite small. Breakfast was served in a dining area just off the bar and, although there was plenty of choice it was not to my taste. There was a cold buffet of meats and cheeses, fruit and yoghurts and cereals. There was also a selection of hot food of scrambled egg, bacon and sausage. Unfortunately, the hot plate was cold as was the food and the sausages were chopped up hotdog style. I sent my meal back in order to get a fresh plate and explained and the waitress turned up the hotplate. I returned a few minutes later and it was a bit warmer though not hot and the eggs had set solid. I hope they can sort this out. On reflection I could have cooked myself a freshly boiled egg with toast. Despite this we found it comfortable and convenient for the ferry port and have already booked for our next trip to the UK.
Checked in for 2 night stay and all seemed pleasant, room was small but ok with very small shower room . But was adequate for what was needed and the bed was pretty comfy . We had busy schedule so didn't have the breakfast. But on our return we asked for a table in restaurant but was told fully booked despite being resident. The hotel was far from fully booked infact I say less than half so I found this odd . I enquired if any takeaways nearby as the town is half hour walk away an rather abruptly got told no but carrefours nearby I could walk to . We had no choice but to do that or taxi to town so we braved the walk through a group of resident immigrants that live on roundabout outside hotel that where very intimidating nd was not a pleasant experience. When we got back at 8.30 pm only 5 tables in restaurant sat at so about 25% full very annoying . Firstly if only got staff to cover 5 tables then this should be spelled out at time of check in so alternative plans can be made. Secondly to be told to walk to supermarket to get supplies through a potentially dangerous area unacceptable. I am a diabetic and being left in a situation like that could potentially have been dangerous. And thirdly the staffing levels where very low only ever one person often nowhere to be found if you wanted to purchase a drink or ask a question. We found this hotels facilities to be a let down and would not return
We're staying for four nights on a Band of Brothers tour. I couldn't be more happy about this hotel. The management is great. The breakfast is the best we've had, including Paris at an Ibis. This wis SA great place to stay.
We have stayed in this hotel 3 times after a ferry trip from Portsmouth. The ferry arrives about 9.30 and by the time it is docked and you are through customs it is quite late so perfect position. It is only a few minutes drive and easy to find when you are tired. Rooms are very comfortable and the reception is friendly and English soeaking
Second time we've used this as a pit stop en route to or from south of France and, just as before, didn't disappoint. We arrived very late this time with our 2 sleepy kids. Car park was full but thankfully we were told it was okay to park in the space by the office. The quad room (2 adjoining rooms, 1 twin and 1 double) was perfect for our family of four as we could get the kids to sleep first while we kept the light on and sorted ourselves out in our room next door. We didn't have time for breakfast as early ferry so can't comment on this. On returning to the UK I realised I couldn't find my small diamond necklace and was fairly sure I could have knocked it onto the floor of our room. I called the hotel not expecting them to have it and perhaps less scrupulous housekeeping staff wouldn't own up to finding it. I was absolutely delighted to be told they did have it and a few days later it arrived back at my home address. Amazing honesty that sadly you can't expect from all hotels these days. Will definitely use this hotel again. The rooms are immaculate, the a/c is great, the beds comfy and the staff very pleasant. Thank you once again to Housekeeping and Claudine on reception for returning my necklace. I am so grateful.
We booked in to this hotel after a 6 hour drive from our camp site in the south of France ready to get the ferry from Caen. The location is superb and the rooms air conditioned. We didn't arrive until relatively late but there was still plenty of parking for us and our car (with roof box). The restaurant was full so we didn't get to use that and the next morning ate our breakfast on the ferry. Check-in was smooth and the room comfortable but could have done with a bit of modernising. If I were to transit in/out of Caen again I would definitely stay here.
Arrived at 7pm, very pleasant hotel for a night, no complaints. We asked for a table in the restaurant to be told it was fully booked. We went out at 7.30 when the restaurant was virtually empty and when we returned at 9.30 there plenty of empty tables. I believe they just the work and didn't really put themselves out.
We have used this hotel many times so it's sad to see that it appears to be going downhill. Our room wasn't comfortable - the air con was efficient but very noisy, the beds were uncomfortable and the toilet broke - although fixed quickly by the receptionist. She was lovely - made us a couple of evening snacks and pots of good tea! The breakfast room is completely without charm - a recently added very small pool has taken away the view of the garden. Everything is self-service. The cornflakes contained some broken plastic, which I discovered when I found myself crunching it. The receptionist/breakfast manager/bedroom cleaning helper simply put it in the bin when I showed her and had a quick glance at the cornflakes container. She did at least come over later to check that I was OK and to try to reassure me that the container wasn't chipped or broken but I felt the cornflakes should have been checked a bit more for any further undesirable ingredients. At check out time she wasn't available because she was trying to help clean the rooms, which was very kind of her but we really couldn't find anyone to check out for at least 10 minutes after hunting around everywhere. I had to go up and down the corridors calling out 'Bonjour!' Basically the place is understaffed and the quality control has gone downhill as a consequence. Of course this is only my opinion. There are migrants in the park over the road and although intimidating, we didn't feel unsafe as there was also a police presence. Nevertheless this is a sad development for Ouistreham because the next day we saw them being bundled out of a lorry at the port. The car park is fairly secure but the lack of staff is especially not reassuring if problems do ensue.
Arriving on late evening ferry, this is just the place you want to find. Helpful and welcoming staff member, comfortable room and beds and aircon on a hot night. Safe parking within the grounds. Lovely breakfast with plenty of choices. Thoroughly recommend
Very close to the Port, but unfortunately arrived on a Public Holiday so there wasn't much open in Local Area, but Receptionist translated the local takeaway menu who delivered food for the evening. Centrally located for visiting the various memorials in local area.
We stayed here as part of my husband's business trip last weekend. An excellent hotel, welcomed warmly by the staff and they couldn't do enough for us. When we arrived the carpark was full of vintage VW cars (some dating back to 1913) as well as a wonderful De Lorean and a couple of English classics. Unfortunately, by the time we got back from our evening meal in the town, all the cars had gone, so we missed a photo opp. Enjoyed the stay, wi-fi was strong and the bed and other facilities were excellent. Thankfully a lift to the upper floors so we didn't have to lug our bags upstairs. We didn't stay for breakfast (had to make an early start) so can't comment on that. Very convenient for the ferry port too.
Not sure what to expect of this Hotel I had booked it through Brittany Ferries but this Hotel has exceeded all my expectations fantastic rooms , great staff , new indoor swimming pool , and the most amazing food , try the three course set menu with great choices for each course my choice was oysters , rump steak , and apple tart it was superb , I would recommend this Hotel to anyone in the area especially those travelling on the ferry from Ouistreham .
With friends, I stopped here on my last night of a motorcycle tour through France. I arrived and it took 15 minutes to find anyone to check me in. I checked into a single room. I asked when the restaurant would open and was told that it was closed that night because a self-congratulatory promotional marketing bash for local dignitaries was being held by the hotel. How about the bar snacks menu on all the tables? No. The kitchen is too busy. Where is the nearest restaurant? 5 minutes by taxi but no taxi was available for 80 minutes. Or a 20 minute walk. So we walked to the nearby Macdonalds through a petrol station and empty supermarket car park watched by what appeared to be illegal migrants looking for a ride. That wasn't the French cuisine that we were looking forward to on our last evening. We walked back to the bar to find that a 500ml Stella was 7 Euros. Far too expensive. The next morning I checked out early to find that it took 10 minutes to get any staff onto the checkout desk. The one staff member visible was occupied in the breakfast room. Then I find that my single room at €105 has overnight become a double room at €120. He had no idea why or how and the manager hadn't arrived before we had to go to check in for the ferry. So I paid the extra amount to escape the place. We saw lots of hotels in Ouistreham when we went to the ferry. Don't use this hotel. It's expensive, isolated, gives you little or no choice of food and drink and worryingly there are gangs of illegals in the woods nearby.
This is a lovely boutique Hotel set in nice surrounding just a short walk from the beautiful town of Quistreham. The rooms are well set out with good decor. The staff are extremely helpful, especially Claudine who serviced and hired us two bikes to cycle into town while answering the phone and checking people in, she is a star for this business. There are also in the process of building an indoor pool which will add to this hotel. we will certainly return soon.
This hotel was very clean quiet and pleasant. Staff helpful from initial booking to departure. The room was small but comfortable. Tea and coffee provided. Tv shower etc. Breakfast excellent. Hotel had some building work which was unobtrusive and indicated that it was being invested in. Restaurant looked good too The bar was closed when we arrived but that was irrelevant as we only wanted to go to bed. Definitely stay here again
The young lady who greeted us at check-in was awesome! She went out of her way to help us. She walked us to our room, told us where to go to find good food, walked us through the D-day places to see, and was extremely helpful in sharing the best cities to stay in and a great route for our continued trip through France. To top off our stay, breakfast was delicious! And,many thanks to the gentleman at the front desk that helped us book our hotel room the following night in a different city
Ideal place to stay, easy to find good parking lovely rooms. Friendly reception staff nothing too much trouble, a nice calm place to arrive. Seemed quite bemused by flustered Brits and were very used to help with any questions! Good value. Pleasant bar café area with real fire, lovely welcome indeed.. The restaurant is pretty up market, but has three course menus from 27€ which I think was reasonable for a very high quality dinner. I really enjoyed mine.. A big general store supermarket with pretty much everything is within a 5 min walk, although I encountered a rough bunch of guys hanging around on the pathway there, would avoid at night. I'm sure hotel parking is pretty safe though. Cheap fuel just around the corner. Will add this hotel as a definite for future stopovers.
We have just spent a night here and, as always, it was excellent. Perfect location for our needs, perfect staff, our room was very clean and comfortable. Our meal in the restaurant was faultless. We have no hesitation in recommending this hotel.
My wife and I stayed at this Hotel for five days and found it very calm and comfortable. The staff were all English speakers and extremely helpful - nothing was too much trouble and any queries were attended to immediately. The breakfasts were excellent with a large and plentiful buffet replenished promptly. The rooms were very clean and our bedsheets were changed daily. The one gripe is that the shower only produced lukewarm water and that after being left running for five minutes.
We did a Brittany Ferries short break & spent 3 nights here. It's a small hotel about 3 minutes from the ferry terminal. The rooms are spotless & the staff are really friendly. There is a small bar which was really nice. The restaurant is lovely with exceptional food. It's not cheap but it's quality. Breakfast is good mainly continental but also with bacon, sausage & scrambled egg. I would come back here again.
Hotel is surely good, though the bathroom is really small. Well located for a bike tour till Caen though a bit far from the beach (if walking). Breakfast is not "super de luxe" but everything you want is available (different meats, cheese, eggs etc).
Very clean and practical and easy reach of the ferry terminal. Book early if you want the restaurant as it was fully booked for us 4 days ahead and it's a taxi ride to anywhere else to eat. Room was of reasonable size with bed averagely comfortable. TV is French only. Noisy bin collection and deliveries at 6am if you have the windows open. Bathroom average size but with two of the tiniest shower gel and shampoo containers I have ever seen. Not sufficient for two and mean. Difficult to find reception and the receptionist was tepid.
Great hotel - quiet, clean rooms, good amenities, restaurant and food options are good, lovely views over the fields but best of all is the friendly service and excellent hospitality. Marine and team are amazing.
Spent 3 nights in August while touring Normandy. It's a very small hotel, rooms are simple but quiet & comfortable enough. The main restaurant was closed for summer holiday but breakfast was provided every morning and was more than adequate & several restaurants in the village are available if you don't mind a 20-30 min walk. They do have a small bar available in the evening that is manned by the receptionist but she did a wonderful job waiting on our group each evening.
We stayed at this hotel as a stopover after using ferry and before travelling south. It was easy to find with good parking. The rooms were good, clean and comfortable. We made the mistake on outward journey of thinking we had booked for breakfast but in fact hadn't - the website was misleading - and were shocked to be charged nearly €12 each for a basic breakfast. On the return journey we had prepaid and booked breakfast but still don't know why the two stays differed. We decided to eat in the restaurant - which was very very expensive so we only had a main course but the food was excellent. We'd have been better going into Ouisterham to eat which (as we discovered later) was only a 20 minute walk. A nice hotel but a bit pricey - on our next trip I think we will look elsewhere. We stayed at Ibis styles before which was better value but rooms were very small.
Stayed here for one night at the end of a holiday touring Normandy. Very comfortable and quiet with good parking. Staff were very good particularly an extremely helpful receptionist who translated the whole menu for us as we considered eating in the Restaurant. Breakfast was also very good.
This hotel is only 5 mins by car from the Caen ferry port. It has parking. It is fairly basic but comfortable, clean and quiet. The breakfasts were good and the staff very helpful and pleasant. It is in the perfect location and was so easy to get everywhere we wanted to visit in this beautiful and moving part of France. It was a 10-15 minute walk to the harbour area with some good restaurants. Would definitely recommend this hotel and would stay there again.
The hotel is pleasant, with very helpful staff and comfortable rooms. The real surprise is the restaurant, which is simply exceptional. Fine dining at a very reasonable price. The fish dishes are excellent. Service is friendly and quick. The hotel is very convenient for the ferry at Ouistreham, but the restaurant is worth a trip in its own right. Do try the scallop starter which was sublime.
This hotel is some way out of the centre of Ouistreham but it is better than the hotels in the centre with free parking and a staff used to arrivals and departures at odd hours. The breakfast is well worth taking, having a selection of both hot and cold buffet at a very reasonable price Prefer a room on the ground floor at the front if you want to keep an eye on your car. We actually passed our bags through the window!
Stayed there before. Will definitely stay there again. The beds are very firm. Otherwise cannot fault this hotel, its staff or the breakfast. The breakfast is self service buffet but it's a great choice - you won't be disappointed. Good speed free wifi. All the staff are really friendly and speak excellent English. Not a big hotel - got the ambiance of a family run hotel. They lock the gates to their car park over night so it's secure parking. Great place to stop over on our way down from / back to the uk via Ouistreham - just a couple of minutes from the ferry port.
For such a small hotel the standard of service was excellent. Members of staff were cheerful, friendly and, in the case of the receptionist on duty when we arrived, extremely helpful. There was plenty to choose from at breakfast (not full English - nor should it be) in a comfortable dining room. The hotel is well placed for accessing the ferry terminal and Ouistreham itself. I would happily stay there again.
We stayed one Sunday evening as a ferry stop over and after a 10 hour drive were met with a smiling helpful face. We asked about local restaurants and were carefully advised and were to drive or walk to. The room itself was clean, tidy and compact with a really good shower. Inexpensive and friendly and does what it says on the tin! Thank you
Great food!! Very helpful staff!! Rooms are nice and it is located close to the ferry terminal. Can recommend this place if you plan to stay before or after a ferry trip. Pricing is reasonable and the restaurant is actually cheap.
We recently had a one-night stay in the hotel. It is very well placed for the Ouistreham ferry and is definitely a cut above the other hotels that weve stayed in in Ouistreham. Its only a 3 minute drive from the ferry port in a quiet lication, easily found. Our booking in and reception was handled very efficiently and professionally by a young woman who was most welcoming, and a good 'face' for the hotel. Our room was very clean and comfortable. I noted the presence of a tea/coffee making tray...you rarely get that in french hotels. The beds and linen were of a high standard. Plenty of towels provided. We dined in the hotel's restaurant in the evening. I had booked a table and i would advise you to so to ensure a place. We were the only uk people in the restaurant. The restaurant itself is lovely. We had a great meal. Food was perfect, the service was very efficient and friendly by a mostly very young staff. I was most impressed. After returning to our room after dinner, there was a knock at our door. I had absent-mindedly left my reading glasses in the restaurant and one of the waiting staff had kindly brought them up to me. Again,I was very impressed. We had a very good night's sleep, very comfortable. The hotel is in a quiet location. Good heavy curtains. We skipped breakfast in the morning as we didn't need it after the previous evening's lovely dinner. Check out was easy and handled with professionalism and friendliness. We will definitely stay at this hotel again!!
Our room was very comfortable indeed. Plenty of room and all perfectly well decorated and maintained. Others have mentioned that rooms are small but the one we had I don't think could be considered so. Great staff, plenty of parking and just a few minutes' walk to the restaurants around the Place du Général de Gaulle. We arrived on Sunday and the hotel restaurant is closed then but it was no inconvenience at all. A very comfortable night's stay.
Haven't been in a Best Western for some time. We were a bit surprised by the size of the room and especially the bathroom. Having said that, it was clean and neatly set out. The receptionist was very helpful and the restaurant had a superb menu. We arrived around lunchtime and took a walk into the typical seaside town. The weather wasn't good but there was enough to look at and walk around to work up an appetite for the evening meal. In the morning, after our wake up call, we pretty much rolled out of bed and onto the 8.30am Ferry!
I booked this hotel in Ouistreham because I knew that we would be tired from our ferry journey and I was so glad I did. Check in was really easy and the staff are very friendly. Our room was immaculately clean and tidy and the bed was very comfortable. We had an excellent night's sleep and after an invigorating shower and good breakfast we were ready for our holiday. We stayed again on our return and had exactly the same experience two weeks later. Different staff, but just as friendly, immaculately clean and comfortable room and a good night's sleep. Consistency is everything. We will definitely be doing this again. We ate in the restaurant attached to the hotel (but not owned by the hotel itself) and had a fantastic meal. We booked a table when we checked in and were lucky enough to get one. We will definitely be going there again too. A very happy experience for two weary travellers.
Our party of twenty came here on the last night of our classic car road trip in Brittany. The hotel provided our own dining room where we could celebrate thr end of our fab holiday. The food wine and service was excellent. A very fitting end to a great week.
My husband and our nine year old daughter stayed here in August for five nights as we were attending a family wedding. We have stayed in Ouistreham before but wanted a hotel with more facilities and air con. Upon arrival staff were extremely friendly and welcoming. Our room was a large double with sofa bed made up for our daughter which was perfect for her. The room was large and spotlessly clean. We had breakfast each morning which was great and there's plenty of choice. On a couple of occasions we had a snack in the bar area early afternoon. Basic snack food but delicious all the same. Restaurant attached to hotel is separate and unfortunately very frosty and unwelcoming to say the least. On returning back from the hotel one afternoon with thirty degree heat to escape from , we walked into the restaurant as it has doors that open onto a courtyard so looked perfect for a cool drink in the shade. Sad to say the welcome was so frosty you wouldn't need ice in your drink to keep it cold. The waitress looked at us like we had two heads. There was hardly anyone in it and we were told that we couldn't order just drinks even though there was a table of people with 'just drinks'. That is the only negative experience out of our stay. If you are visiting the beaches or you need a stop before catching the ferry then this is a great place to stay, either over night or a few days.
This is an easily accessible hotel if you're on Brittany Ferries 21.30 arrival and we had a peaceful enough night but we were awakened early(ish) by an adjacent workshop for motor repairs. Plenty of compressor work which was noisy and unwelcome. Nice enough breakfast which was quite pricey. There was the usual problem with an excess of duvet provision for a very hot summer night (why can't hotels simply supply a sheet on these occasions?) and wayward air conditioning. We had stayed here previously and probably would do so again.
I stayed here with my husband as we were attending a wedding at Eglise St Samson in Ouistreham. The hotel was very handy for the church and a 30 minute walk from the Ferry terminal which was nice in the beautiful sunshine. The hotel had a pleasant boutique feel about it. The room was small but adequate and spotlessly clean. Staff were all very helpful and booked taxis for us etc. We enjoyed a delicious meal in the restaurant which although pricey, was very enjoyable in lovely surroundings. I would definitely recommend a trip to this gorgeous traditionally French town.
Booked this Best Western for the simple reason of its location to the port. However what a pleasant surprise for me and my team on entering the hotel on the cleanliness and on how the staff were so helpful. The rooms are new and clean and well maintained. We had breakfast which was fresh and had a wide variety, and had an evening meal in the adjoining restaurant which was extremely good, even go to say it was equal to some Michelin stared restaurants I've eaten at in the past!
Smart, modern interior and rooms. Comfy beds, room on the tight side but perfect for stop over. Very clean all over, staff very pleasant. Good position for main routes and access to local area. Breakfast more than expected at this price point.
Lovely hotel good modern facilities great helpful staff. Good for ferry terminal. Good value for money great for families we had 2 adjoining rooms. Nice restaurant on site too. Bar and lounge area really nice. Would definetly recommend and would return again.
Straight forward booking of a triple and double room. Charming and helpful reception. A cot was produced in an instant and when a bottle of wine to take to our room was ordered at the bar, wine cooler and bowl of nibbles appeard with equal speed and charm. Delightful place to stay less than 5 mins from Ferry terminal.
I have stayed here a couple of times - using the hotel as a base to explore the region and also as a stopover venue before travelling onwards. It is virtually a stone's throw away from the Brittany Ferries port. The rooms are comfortable and with all of the facilities you would expect. The breakfast gives you plenty of good choices. There is free parking on site and the wifi is good. The bonus is a very good restaurant attached (though not seemingly directly owned) to the hotel. Highly recommended hotel and restaurant.
As you disembark from the Brittany Ferry in the very late evening and have struggled through French customs, the last thing you want to do is try to locate some out-of-the-way hotel, so that you can rest your weary head. The Hotel La Mare Ô Poissons is conveniently located no further than a few hundred metres from the port on the main road to Caen and is extremely easy to find. The rooms are up-market chain hotel standard; very comfortable but pretty much devoid of any character, but the beds are of a good size and appear to be new. Family rooms are in short supply, but we had an adjoining room so our son had the luxury of his own bedroom and a real bed (not the typical and uncomfortable put-me-up). When the late ferry docks, the kitchen is closed, but I guess most travellers will have eaten their fill on-board the boat. Breakfast is suitably timed to accommodate even the earliest departing traveller and is a good and comprehensive buffet, both hot and cold. I think we could probably stand staying at the hotel for a couple of nights, but for an elongated holiday stay, I think we would want something with more 'French-ness' - but the welcome received and amenities will mean that when next we catch the ferry to Caen, we shall almost certainly stay over at this hotel.
A modern hotel with character on the outskirts of the town off the main road to Caen. Ideal for those wishing to catch an early morning ferry or exploring the Normandy beaches. Our room was comfortable with the usual tea tray and wifi. The bathroom was spotless with a good shower. There is air con, but it was switched off and the room would have been stuffy if we had not been able to open a widow. The food in the restaurant was very good and reasonably priced with a fixed menu. The buffet breakfast also came up to expectation. The staff could not have been more helpful, friendly and willing to go the extra mile.
Handy for the ferry terminal and the ferry road is off the roundabout next to the hotel. Staff were a bit offish throughout our stay but they helped when asked for information. Rooms are small but modern and have all you need for a one night stay. The dinner menu is a complete rip-off, the portions are so small you find yourself asking for more bread rolls, also the food quality was a bit low. Tip. there is a retail park 300M up the main road that has a Bistro, McDonalds, Carrefore and Lidl so finding an alternative to the hotel menu is easy.
I booked a two night stay through Brittany Ferries. My first choice hotel, in the centre of Ouistreham, was fully booked which slightly surprised me, but this hotel just out of town had space. On the second night I found out why as it was the start of a five day holiday and the quiet town of Wednesday was absolutely packed by Thursday afternoon. Whereas many guests on the Wednesday had been British, either arriving on the ferry or due to leave the next day, on the Thursday night it was a mixture with mostly French families and some Belgians. The decor was attractive for a modern hotel of this type, everything worked and the lounge/bar area and breakfast room were very comfortable. The bedroom had everything needed including tea/coffee making facilities and a powerful shower. The only minor flaws were: - The room key is a card that you tap on a plate on the door, like a contactless credit card. Unfortunately no-one told me that, and the corridor lighting gives up short of the end room where I was. So I was looking for a non-existent slot, and found the contactless pad by accident when about to give up and go back to reception. The pad is the same colour as the door so in dim light it's tricky. - The floors are not carpeted in the bedrooms. I was on the ground floor, and unfortunately had a clumsy visitor above me on the second night. She dropped something on the floor at about 2:30 in the morning, again at 6:00, then dropped cutlery in the breakfast room. To be fair I heard no normal noise from other rooms, it was only when things were dropped. Her husband said something like "not again" in the breakfast room so she obviously has history. The reception staff, who also served drinks in the bar if required, were extremely pleasant and helpful. The location just out of town proved a boon when the town was packed, but at a quiet time you would need to take the car or cycle unless you fancied quite a long walk each way. The secure and spacious car park was big enough even in the Thursday when the hotel was full.
We regularly stay here, as it is so convenient for the ferry and the rooms are clean. The staff are very helpful and speak good English. We dined in for the first time on the most recent visit, and were underwhelmed. We both had a turbot dish, which was ruined by a grossly over-salted bed of spinach. The head waitress seemed to think that it was our fault for not complaining as soon as we received the dish. We paid in full, but shall eat out next time. Pity.
We've stayed here many times after crossing the channel and have always given 4 stars on previous reviews but not this time. Unless you are disabled and need adapted facilities, avoid room 12. It may be larger than the standard rooms but it's not as nice and the shower room is inconvenient. The room is at the end of the block and was really cold - the floor was freezing. We put the heating on as soon as we arrived in the room, about 10.15 pm, but it didn't have much effect and the beds were cold. Worse, I slept little as my bed was so uncomfortable. When I investigated in the morning I discovered why. The mattresses are Dunlopillo, which have only one proper side and are designed not to be turned over. My mattress was the wrong side up. The other bed was fine. Hard to believe the bed-maker didn't notice. In true French fashion, the receptionist seemed unconcerned when I mentioned these things and didn't offer an apology. She also told me that now I know to ask not to have room 12. The breakfast room was also unpleasantly cold. Breakfast is not good value and only worth having when it's included in the room price. As a previous reviewer commented, things such as bread and bacon aren't replenished even though they run out quite early, and no one seems to check.
We stayed for 2 nights, both receptionists were friendly and helpful. We had dinner the first night which was lovely however although they state they speak English, the girls in the restaurant dont, so bit of a language barrier there. Room was big and comfortable, no English channels on the tv. The hotel isnt near any shops or loc restaraunts so there is driving involved
This is a great hotel with friendly helpful staff good service where nothing was to much bother will use again. They allow dog's in the room at a small charge a well lit car park if you need to return to your car at night breakfast from 6.15am rooms are very well presented and has tea making facilities and to use offered value for the money
It was good to see that there seemed to be just as many French staying at the hotel as there were British.....always a good sign. The welcome was warm and friendly and the staff were all very excited with the arrival of their new 'bar' which was being installed as we sat and drank.......we had 2 bottles of wine, and as a lovely surprise the hotel owner (who was supervising the instillation, unbeknownst to us) gave us our second bottle free due to the disruption....a lovely gesture. The rooms are clean, warm, well decorated and the WiFi was a good strength....it also came with tea and coffee facilities, although no English TV channels were available.....we spoke to the receptionist who informed us that this was being rectified with new TV's being put into all the rooms....something I look forward to on our next visit! The restaurant in the evening was excellent.....the food was top-drawer, great standard and they forgave my pigeon-French when ordering. Good service, good value for money with an excellent standard of cooking. The hotel is literally 2 minutes from the Brittany Ferry and serve breakfast early if you want it......it is a great place to stop and I cannot recommend it enough for the weary traveler. Well done......Top Marks!
Brilliant hotel - have stayed there many times and each time it gets better. It is clean, tidy, with first class reception facilities, rooms are exceptionally clean, decoration good, free wifi, good shower facilities. Never had a bad stay here.
Looking for a hotel ,close to Ouistreham ferry port ,this is the place to stay . Just about 5 mins to the port ,and easy to find . Welcoming reception ,standard rooms are good with all facilities . Breakfast room ,and a restaurant as well . Will stay again when using the port .
The Hotel is ideally situated for the morning ferry, easy to find alongside a roundabout and only five minutes from the port. The staff were friendly and the bedroom was large, clean, with all the necessary requirements.
A few minutes from the ferry port of Caen, well equipped and a comfortable room with individual heating. The restaurant had an extensive menu all prepared to a high standard and the breakfast was sunstantial and varied. All in all I shall use again during my visits to Europe.
I can always depend on Best Western hotels for comfort, good food and location. Caen is an easy port to navigate and the hotel is 3 minutes away for embarkation. A great location to begin or end ones tour of France for the UK. Caen retains it's character and the hotel does it justice. Hotel facilities are always reliably above average.
We always stay here when we are on our way from the UK to our house in France. It is clean and convenient to/from the ferry. There isn't a lot of point in asking for a convenient room, as your request will be ignored, but, nevertheless, it is the best hotel in Ouistreham (we've tried them all!). Whatever you do, DO NOT eat in the restaurant: it's over-priced, and the food is truly dire. The last (and only) time we ate here, I couldn't even cut the steak! True, it is more convenient to eat in the hotel where you are staying, but there are a number of more than acceptable restaurants close by, where you will get a much better meal at a much more reasonable price.
Excellent! Staff are very friendly and exceedingly helpful. Evidenced by the efforts that they made to return an item of luggage inadvertently left behind to me in Uk Room was clean and comfortable and evening dinner in the restaurant was superb This will be a regular stopover for us
We stayed 2 nights at this hotel while visiting Caen and Normandy area. The hotel was a little out of the way with no nearby shops or restaurants, other than the hotel. We arrived at 11 pm and were unable to get any food nearby or in the hotel. The hotel was clean and the front desk staff were very friendly and assisted us with an adapter to charge our electronics. The room was a good size by European standards and very clean. There were no english channels on the TV. If you like to be away from the hustle and bustle of the city and are prepared to drive wherever you want to go, i would recommend you look at ths hotel.
the hotel was easy to find just off the road into town we were made welcome the room was small but had most basic needs for our enjoyment and comfort ,the staff were friendly and obliging ,the restaurant was excellent ,the food was presented as fit for a king, very good, enjoyed the two day stay.
Someone in Best Western's french management needs a good kick in the khyber. We stated on the booking form that my husband had limited mobility ie cant walk long distance. We were given room No. 28 and that was a long walk to the elevator then the room. Why weren't we allocated a room on the ground floor? We made a dinner reservation at 5.45 pm. At 7.30 pm a very over worked young lady, who was also the receptionist, nervously knocked on the door to inform us that the restaurant was full and could not accomodate us. She offered us "light snacks" from the room service menu. My Tomato tart was inedible as it was too salty, thus I left it and filled up on bread rolls. My husband ordered Smoked Salmon on scrambled eggs. Has anyone ever eaten cold scrambled eggs and enjoyed it? The food finally arrived at 8.40 pm delivered by the same over worked receptionist who seemed to pluralise in many jobs - receptionist, porter, housekeeping and waitress. The poor girl had to struggle with a very heavy tray, make two trips to deliver wine and other drinks, and it beggers belief that some idiot in management hadn't thought to provide trolleys for room service? When I asked why we had been turned away from the restaurant even though we had booked well in advance, we were told that the hotel is always busy every day with corporate guests and they get priority for restaurant meals. Best Western management must decide whether they want to cater for the corporate market only and turn away the one night traveller or re-structure the business to keep both types of guests happy. I was definitely not a happy guest especially as there was no one at management level to whom I could voice my complaint. On the plus side, the location of this hotel is perfect for getting to the Brittany Car ferry port as it is only a 10 minutes drive. The decor of the rooms is tasteful, ell equipped and the bed was extremely comfortable.
I stayed here a few months ago as I was heading south to the Dordogne. But this time we were hanging around Normandy for a few days, and this seemed an ideal base...which it is. For a start, it's just out of bustling Caen, and all the better for it - if you need to go into Caen, then a taxi will cost just under €30 each way, and save you having to find and pay for parking. The 31-room hotel is just off the main road to the ferry port, and as a result is very peaceful and quiet. There are supermarkets nearby and a filling station, should you need it, and plenty of eateries in Ouistreham itself. But the hotel has an integral restaurant, focusing mainly on seafood - lobster, king prawns, sea bass, sea bream, monk fish and Dublin Bay prawns, although there are meat dishes too. The menu is sensibly limited, and all the dishes are very well cooked and presented along with a modest but decent wine list. We will certainly be here again. It's perfect for anyone wanting to explore Normandy and the D-Day Landing Beaches, or visit Bayeux to see the tapestry, or even (1.5 hours) visit Le Mont-St-Michel.
Stayed here for 3 nights - room isn't too big, but it was clean and nice. Bathroom is small, but again very clean. Loved the big shower! Breakfast was perfect, wide range of choices (english and european breakfast). Very friendly staff! Hotel has a free private parking, which closes between 11Pm and 6 AM. Hotel is located at a 5 min. drive from the Ouistreham ferry, 10 min. from the beach, 15 min. from Caen. The restaurant attached to the hotel was awesome - went there 2 times, booked in the morning. It can be busy though, as local people also come here. Book in advance might be a good idea.
This hotel is well placed for the ferry to Portsmouth. We have stayed there before, arriving at 21.30h as previously. It is conveniently placed at only about a mile from the terminal so one can quickly settle down for the night. Parking is somewhat limited and you may have to carry bags to the hotel from the car park. On this occasion we also stayed on the way back and so had dinner as well. Drinks were not the cheapest we had in France and the food was a little overpriced as well. The restaurant was busy as there isn't an alternative nearby so the service was a bit slow. The recptionist was very friendly and the rooms are clean and comfortable.
The hotel itself is a good looking and well-kept place, run by friendly and informative staff. We got an upstairs room (only two floors) and the room was well-presented with twin beds (but these could be pushed together if desired). The bathroom was a reasonable size and very clean, with the usual toiletries provided. The downside was that it was the end of a long drive from the south and we were looking forward to getting there, having a shower and enjoying a nice meal. Sadly the restaurant was fully booked as it is also used by non-guests so we had to travel into Ouistreham itself 2km away in the pouring rain. We were never asked if we wanted to book a table or warned it gets busy so it was a bit of a let down when we discovered we were not able to eat at our own hotel. Thankfully we found a nice restaurant, even if we did get rather soaked, with help of the receptionist who gave us a map and directions to the town centre. So for the hotel I can't fault its comfort and cleanliness, but the fact you can't eat at the restaurant without reservation days in advance, and aren't informed or advised of this possibility did annoy us a bit. Car park in the grounds, with overflow parking outside, free and without height restriction.
Arrived Saturday told restaurant fully booked( not a disaster ate in Le Channel in town v good) room small but bed reasonable size outlook at front quite nice, parking on site. Capsule bathroom. Declined breakfast due to early ferry and cheaper to eat lovely breakfast on ferry. Nothing special it was just a stopover and not as good at Mercure in Saumur. Though same star rating!!
Stayed here before catching early morning ferry back to UK. Only 5 mins from ferry terminal. Nice welcome from receptionist, and room freshly decorated and clean. There was only a shower in the room, while a bath would have been nice after a long car journey. The restaurant prices were expensive. If you walked less than a mile you could get good food at half the price. Didn't have breakfast, as early start for ferry. Would go again for room only.
My partner and I stopped in Ouistreham to break up our journey between Saint-Malo and Le Touquet and really weren't expecting much from the hotel. As such, we were pleasantly surprised at how clean and modern our room was—and after a week of going without a brew, the presence of a kettle and tea bags was extremely welcome! The hotel's location isn't that great if you're a walker: The quickest/easiest route to the main area of the town/beach/D-Day memorial is unpaved for a while, but the drive is less than 10 minutes. The friendly staff member on reception provided us with a map of the area and suggestions for food and drinks. There's a supermarket and petrol station not one minute's drive away. And for those who need it, I'm reliably informed that WiFi was fast and reliable.
Another great stay at this Best Western hotel. Stayed en route to the Vendee and then again on the way back. Very helpful and friendly staff on reception. Large, clean hotel rooms with all the necessary amenities - including bottles of water. Hotel restaurant is very popular. Was full during my stay so we walked to the bars and restaurants on the Avenue de la Mer & the beach - only 20ish minutes away. Would recommend as a ferry stopover and definitely stay again.
Found hotel lovely very clean an very well located for ferry in nice quiet area of lovely French town breakfast was good dinner was pricey in hotel but excellent would stay again staff were very friendly an helpful
A lovely hotel with classy grounds, a classy room, a wonderful nights sleep and good tea and coffee making in the rooms. Wonderful friendly staff - next time we'll try and make sure we get more time there. Can't fault it
Like many people we used this hotel for a one night stay prior to getting onto the ferry to come home and if what you are after is a clean and comfortable place for an overnight stop with all the mod cons then this place is fine. Conveniently located for the ferry, and has free parking. The breakfast is good and you get 24h free internet. The room is really comfortable and the staff are polite and friendly. I would highly recommend. The attached restaurant is very expensive, but there are other restaurants nearby.
Like many people we used this hotel for a one night stay after landing quite latein the evening from the ferry. We had a good nights sleep in a comfy bed and a decent breakfast the following day before driving South. I've no complaints at the price, delivered exactly what I expected.
Terrible hotel made out of balsa wood and highly resonating tin/fibre glass. You will hear someone farting on the next floor at other end of hotel. Avoid like the plague, totally overpriced was no better, in fact worse, than the cheapo 29 euro plastic places France loves.
Perfect for an overnight before a long drive through France. Normally I come on the overnight ferry, but felt that I could manage the drive to the Dordogne in one day, so opted to stay overnight here first.
A well-positioned, very professional hotel. Of especial note, in this ferry port, is that there is a 24-hour reception service; so that, if your sailing does not arrive on time (as ours didn't), you don't have to panic if you arrive at 1.30 in the morning as we did. After a bit of a nightmare their smiling receptionist was a very reassuring sight. Late breakfast not bad either.
Disappointed this time. Slow service and cold food at dinner. Lack of charm from restaurant staff, chaotic and stressed. At breakfast, no bread left (although we weren't late, lots of guests followed us in), also other items like yogurt, bacon, hot water had run out and no evidence of any staff checking. Also the threshold bar to my room was broken. Shame, because we have stayed here many times on our way to and from our French home, and it has always been good, especially the food. Will look else where next time.
Very nice hotel located with in 2kms of the very terminal. Very clea, well decorated roomst rooms, Tea and coffee making facilities. Did not have dinner but the restaurant was very busy with local diners.
Very friendly personnel, clean and quiet hotel with recent rooms, just off the town's main roundabout, and including a free car park within the property if you have a carload of stuff you'd rather not leave out in the street.
An excellent three star hotel only a stones throw from the Brittany Ferry terminal. It is very comfortable and the staff are friendly and helpful. The minimalistic furnishings are not to every tasted. There is a fist class and highly recommended restaurant.
If you are arriving at Ouistreham for an ealy morning or from late ferry this is an ideal location. Only 5 minutes from terminal you are assured a good nights sleep in a very comfortable bed before onward travel. I left for early morning ferry so skipped breakfast and am therefore unable to comment.
Great location near to the ferry terminal but far enough away (less than 1 mile) in a quiet and relaxed setting. Really good restaurant but as it is not too large would recommend reserving a table especially if your stay is at the weekend. The bedroom en suite is 'compact'
First time in the area. Hotel on the edge of town and convenient for exploring war history. Nothing open on Sunday except McDonald's that is only a 5 minute walk. Rooms are smallish but very functional. Parking is secured overnight.
Spent two nights at this outstanding hotel. Easy to find on the outskirts of the town, excellent appearance, friendly and helpful staff at check in and check out. Room was spacious, well equipped, clean and comfortable. Dinner reservation in the restaurant was was booked by the check in staff and added to the hotel bill. Excellent beautifully food cooked at reasonable price. Recommend this hotel. Couldn't ask for more!
Easy to find and well placed for visiting Pegasus Bridge and the eastern sector of the D-day landings. Staff are pleasant and helpful, parking is plentiful and the service and food in the adjoining resturant is also good.
Nice, clean and comfortable hotel and very handy for the ferry to the UK and war Museum visits etc. Large room with big, comfy bed and everything we needed. Window had no safety catch and could only be open or closed and as on the ground floor a little worried during the night but pulled curtain across and used table lamp pushed up against it as a "burglar alarm". Very quiet though and at back of hotel so no problems there. Evening meal excellent but wine expensive. Staff very good. Short staffed at breakfast and tables left uncleared and not laid up meaning we had to share with 2 strangers. Bath towel had a few holes in it but shower excellent.
My wife and I travelled from Belgium after visiting WW I battle sites, to Ouistreham. We choose it for its proximity to the D Day beaches and preferred it to staying Caen, a larger centre. Getting to the hotel as Ouistreham is well posted on the French highways as it is a ferry port to the UK. Our stay was for two nights. We received a double room on the first floor overlooking a garden area. Noise was not a factor during our stay. The room would be described as comfortably furnished with a modern sense. The room was small by North American standards but well designed. We had recently finished a 15 day trans Atlantic cruise so the room size of the our cabin and toilet were comparable. We arte in the dining room the first night. The dining room is run at separate business to the hotel though you can charge your meal to your room. The food in the restaurant is excellent. We choose the 3 course meal of the day which was also good value at 26 Euros. My wife had a starter of 6 fresh oysters which could cost at of the menu cost at home. We had glasses of house wine which were of reasonable quality and price. Breakfast which we had both morning at a cost of 13 Euros was served in a breakfast room. The selection included both hold and cold options with wonderful fresh breads of various assortments. The village of Ouistreham is very walkable with easy access to a large shopping area with 2 local chain supermarkets in it. Walking the other way towards the ferry launch are a number of other restaurant choices. We ate a one our second night with good results. Pricing was less that the hotel restaurant but the service and surrounding were not that of the Hotel dining room. We drove along the coast road to visit Juno Beach , the Canadian Landing site for D Day. There is a fabulous museum on site staffed by Canadians which also gives a great tour on German tunnels, Bunker, and Command Post. In the Afternoon we visited Bayeux, home of the UNESCO sited, Bayeux Tapestry. A tapestry showing the history leading up to and including the conquest of England by William The Conqueror in 1066. Well worth while visiting as well as the medival town centre.
Can't say anything bad about this hotel. Perfect location, great staff, superb nights sleep. My only criticism(small) is the price of the bar drinks - why not charge the same price as the bars in town - it would encourage people to drink/eat at the hotel.
