This is a good affordable hotel, I spent one nigth here alon. Be ware that it is a 2/3-star hotel. You get what you are paying for. Helpful staff, good but small room. Cleaning is good, bed is good. There is parking in the back if yoyu need this. It is close to Altona Bahnhof which was important for me. Here you have direct access to the S-bahn network. I did not try breakfast or any services provided by the hotel with the exception of WiFi.
I'm glad to have experienced the Rafael. Parts of it felt foreign to me, but it all worked out. First of all, the Rafael's location is superb. A short walk to the Altona Hbf connects visitors to anywhere in Hamburg or beyond. I picked this place because of a national holiday following a Sunday - most businesses were closed both days, but the train station's groceries and other stores were still open. Our room had a full-sized bed made of two twins pushed together, and there was sheets and blankets for each twin rather than a single, wider bed. There was a short step up to the bathroom, which caused a bit of cursing in the middle of the night. The room included a small fridge, which came in handy, but there were no ice facilities that I could find. A very nice little lounge area near the lobby had books, plenty of room to read them, and drinks for sale. Light noise through the closed window came from pedestrians on the sidewalk (lots of rolling luggage) as much as the huge trains coming and going. We slept well at night. Next time we're in Hamburg, I'll be looking to stay at the Rafael again.
This is a good hotel option for being close to a train station, which also has taxis when available. The hotel itself is good. My room pretty much looks like the first pictures room. There is no AC but the windows open (no bugs!) and there is a fan in the closet. The bathroom is roomy but the shower is small. For Americans- there are no wash clothes- typical so I brought one of those spongellé things w me. The bathroom has a soap dispenser by the sink and a shampoo dispenser in the shower. The room had a bottle of water in it along w some cookies/small treats. The elevator/lift goes to the third level so if you are on the 4th level, be prepared to take the stairs from 3. Breakfast is nice and the coffee is hot and plentiful! The black out curtains, double layer, are amazing. My room is on the sun rise side and I never knew what time it was in the morning. I kept the curtains closed to keep the sun/heat out for a few hours. I can't hear anything in the hallways or other rooms and the hotel is sold out.
Very good business hotel when visiting Hamburg close to the metro and in a nice area... The hotel is clean and the breakfast and people working in the hotel very decent! They also have good retention of staff which is always a good sign!
Well arranged and very well manned place. Helpful and caring staff. Some rooms are on the small side, however the bigger ones are perfect. Very comfortable and enjoyable. One point to note - lack of aircon in the summer can be a bother.
This is a pleasant, clean and comfortable three star hotel. The room had a quirky design. The bathroom was roomy. The room furniture formed a kind of arch over the room entrance and was well enhansed with space creating mirror panels. It contained the refrigerator, the safe, the tea/coffee and mini bar, storage and hanging. The desk/table doubled as a bedhead. The room was made up for two when i arrived but one is the most this room can accommodate. The staff were helpful with prepared information on transport, restaurants etc. Well done! A nice touch was the bowl of lebkucken on the front desk. This hotel punches above its weight. I would recommend it.
Picked this hotel for location as seeing #clapton in the nearby arena. Hotel is functional clean and tidy but noisy as close to railway lines and blackout curtains didn't close so not the best of nights sleep. Away from main Hamburg area and not many bars around or even open but as I say chose for a reason. Would probably stay closer to city centre next time
We enjoyed our stay and appreciated the helpful staff, clean room, and convenient location. Lots of shops —including restaurants, bakeries, and grocery stores—nearby. Priced modestly and 5 minutes walk from the train station.
The hotel is in a good location, close to U-Bahn and S-Bahn and close to the bus and taxi stops. The hotel staff is very kind. Breakfast is varied and good. The price is ok. I'm very satisfied, next time I will come again to this hotel.
The hotel is in Altona, to the side of the station. Altona station is convenient for access to Hamburg's S bahn, the bus station, and intercity and local overland trains. Altona as a place has had a lot of civic investment over the last few years and this has lifted the tone of the place considerably. You'll find a great many places to eat, different cuisines and a mixed population. Highpoint of the year is the 14 day Altonale street festival normally in July. The hotel is very central to all of this. Rooms are not over large, but ours was fitted with the usual double bed (ie 2 singles put together), large wardrobe, minibar, tea and coffee facilities. And a large en-suite with walk-in shower. All spotlessly clean. The double glazing is very good, and we heard no noise from the street below or the station opposite. The room was warm, even with the heating almost off. Breakfast is on offer at 12 Euros, each but we chose to eat a breakfast in the station (lower level) for 6 Euros pp.The hotel Staff were all very friendly and helpful. We'll happily stay again.
The Altona area that the hotel exists is fantastic area. The hotel is very nice very clean, the room was big with many complimentary things inside. In 1 minute you are in the S bahn station and you could go in the center of Hamburg in 10 minutes. In the area there are many cosy shops ,restaurants and cafes. The staff of the hotel very very friendly and the breakfast with variety of things. The hotel was much much better than what we thought .We are very satisfied. When you go to Hamburg you should choose this area and of course this hotel. Lena Fragoulaki
The hotel is close to Altona station and Ottensen neighborhood. We stayed for three nights before taking a MSC ship last month. The front desk staff are very nice, and the room is comfortable and clean. The only problem is the heavy noise from the outside after midnight as our room faces the busy street. Next time we'll choose the hotel but the room facing the courtyard.
Stayed for two nights while in Hamburg on business. Arrived at night and seemed like a scary neighbourhood. Straight opposite the station - but no noise. Lots of building works. Not so bad the next morning. Hotel needs updating. Relatively comfortable but worn - carpets, furniture etc. Bathroom very nice - looked new. No restaurant that I saw. English tv channels consisted of one CNN channel. Mini bar had a couple of drinks in it. Hotel rooms had double windows so completely airless but did reduce noise. Fan was provided but old and hardly made a difference. No aircon. Very very warm in the room.
The hotel is situated in a very good location, the staff are polite and the rooms are comfortable and clean. Being so close to Altona station means you can travel to the airport and the center of town very easily!
I stayed here whilst visiting Hamburg with friends. I had hoped that the Best Western brand would ensure a level of quality. Unfortunately, I was a bit disappointed. Pros: - Good beds - Helpful staff - Close to Altona station Cons: - It was a bit expensive for what you got. - I booked a single room so didn't expect it to be massive but the room really was very small and felt a bit like a cell - The breakfast was poor and not cheap at €11 for what you got - The toiletries were basic - The pillows were not very comfortable - The towels felt cheap - The Altona area itself (around the station at least) is not that nice, although perhaps that is to be expected. Overall, this hotel would be much better if they improved the breakfast, provided better pillows, towels and toiletries and perhaps improved their small rooms. Would I stay again? Probably not I am afraid.
The superior room was fine but the best thing about the hotel is the location - walking distance to the fishmarket and the wider Alcona area. Alcona station is a rail hub for accessing much of the city and only 40 minutes from the Airport by S-Bahn. The staff were all friendly and helpful
Easy location with a lot of nice restaurants in the Neighbourhood . parking on the street at normal rates . Clean hotel , did not had time to enjoy breakfast so no comments here . At the back of the hotel is a small shopping mall ,and the station is on 2 minute walking distance .
My second visit to this hotel left me less impressed than the first. Good things : Efficient and friendly staff Good breakfast (when you have found it) Good location, close to Altona travel hub and local shops Not so good things : Room was small No air conditioning Carpet needed cleaning Florescent lighting was harsh No power for laptop on desk No power to recharge phone next to bed Not sure I'll be back a third time
Good hotel next to excellent local transport facilities such as trains, S-Bahn, buses and taxis. Very helpful staff and clean and comfortable rooms. Good choice of shopping facilities and restaurants in walking distance.
We stayed there just for 1 Night but Everything was good and Ok. The rooms were clean , rather small but especially ok for a 1 Night. The Hotel is in a good location close to the Altona Station. I didnt expect that so nice Breakfast there..Receptionist were very Polite and helpful Nice staff.Typical German...
Clean rooms, rather small but ok for a few nights. Nice staff. Breakfast is served next door but the place does a nice job. Typical German breakfast with everything you need to start a great day. The location of the hotel is also convenient for many reasons.
I stayed here for 11 nights on a business trip. The hotel is in a good location close to the Altona station; it's very easy to reach from the airport (about 45 mins via the S-Bahn) and from pretty much anywhere in Hamburg via public transport. There's a nice selection of restaurants nearby. My room was a good size, always clean and had all the essentials. The bathroom was nice and the room had a safe, desk, tv, tea and coffee making facilities and a minifridge. I especially liked the little bag of jelly sheep left on my pillow the first night but was disappointed that this and the tea, coffee and wafers weren't replaced during my stay. My room looked out over the car park and was very quiet at night although some of my colleagues with rooms on the station side found it too noisy. The breakfast buffet was an additional 11 euros a day and had a good selection, although not quite enough to keep me interested for the whole 11 days (which is admittedly a fairly long stay). Overall a very good hotel that I'll be sure to stay in again when next in Hamburg!
The Best Western is a thoroughly decent place to stay, especially for business trips to Hamburg, though it does have some faults. Let's start with the positives. The room I had, and stayed in for four nights, was always clean and well kept. I had a particularly large room with a well sized bathroom as well. It has the common amenities you'll find anywhere. The location is great, right next to the train station, lots of shopping, and not too far from the airport either. There is a daily breakfast available that has a decent spread and the 11 euro a day charge is reasonable. The negatives? The bed is firm but not unforgiving, so depending on your preference you might not like it. The pillows are terrible. The room had two that were completely over-stuffed and two that were lumpy and deflated, no compromise in between and made for a sore neck. Depending on your floor it can be a bit noisy, and it isn't even the train station its regular street noise. I was on the first floor and only noticed it a little. As I stated the shower is good (as are the towels) but the temperature tends to fluctuate for no reason. Overall a good place to stay, everything is nice, people are friendly, good location. A solid choice to hotel.
I stayed in this hotel with my friends for my stag do and to be fair I was really happy. It's a nice hotel with clean rooms and decent shower. It was on a quiet street only a few doors away from a kebab house and McDonald's. We had 6 twin rooms and the pricing was ok. We were also about a 15 minute walk from the Reeperbahn which was ideal too. We didn't pre-order breakfast because quite frankly it would have been a waste of money as we were never awake for it. I would definitely recommend it and would have no problem staying again because for a lads holiday I think it was great.
Very close to the town center and railway and subway station. Center of Hamburg is only 15 mins away by subway. Good value hotel. Restaurants are a little thin on the ground in Altona but there are a few but you need to seek these out.
Pricey for what is a basic room, with poor water pressure, excessive noise - both internal and external (have they not heard of door cushions? it slams every time anyone opens it) and cleaning staff who leave the windows open - on a rainy day that is certainly not good for your belongings, or for your socks when you walk over to close the windows - that is once you realise it is the window and not just a draught!.
All in all, I quite enjoyed my stay. Being in Altona was a bit of a surprise, but I actually came to appreciate it. Great restaurants, smaller crowds and the feeling of being in Hamburg rather than just another international city. The hotel was fine. It is small, but just fine! My room was more than adequate (a premium room), with ample working space, a fine shower and a comfortable bed. With the U-Bahn only a few steps away, getting around the city is easy, and I would certainly return to this property.
Our room on the first floor facing the back courtyard was very good. We visited in the fall, temperatures were mild and room was comfortable although duvet was extremely hot. We had to take it off. It would be helpful if hotel provided a light sheet or blanket as an option. Bathroom is small and might be tight quarters for taller, larger persons. The shower was great except have to climb over tall bathtub enclosure and the shower doors don't close or seal properly so water leaked onto the floor. Hair dryer overheats quicky and had to wait 10-15 minutes before it could be used again. In-room coffee and tea service as well as mini-fridge are perfect. Internet service was a bit slow but consistent. Staff in reception area speak English, are very helpful with maps, directions, and recommendations. They are very competent and courteous. Hotel is situated in a central location, easy access to trains, taxi, bus and train services. Altona is a fantastic, quaint area with many coffee shops, bakeries, restaurants and boutiques with easy walking distance.
The room was clean and fresh and the staff was very friendly. Had a room against train station but double windows isolated noise very good. During my stay the temperature was around 20 degree so missing air con was no problem. The wifi was very good in my room on 4th floor. Didn't try the breakfast.
Booked via Booking.com so maybe the 'rate' is for some specially reserved rooms in what used to be another hotel next door but accessed via a diferent entrance unless you are on the 3 rd floor. Don't make mistake of asking for a quite room meaning a 'quiet room' as you will just get one further down the corridor it seems - if you room faces the front of the building then you face the Altona Bahnhof - beware that night trains depart including trains carrying cars/bikes etc to the south incl Swiss - they queue in the road outside the hotel and load noisily for departure around 2300. Some traffic after that too. Noise from the staff at around 0600 preparing the breakfast room also permeates up the stairs. Rooms are certainly overdue a renovation - but they are clean. Bathrooms certainly dated. Rooms lack facilities particularly kettles/fridge. Location in West of City and links via S-Bahn is good with shopping centre and area surrounding - plenty of bakeries and restaurants too (and an IKEA just 5 mins walk). Direct S-Bahn link from Airport is bonus (40mins at Euros 3.10). Didn't take breakfast due to Bakeries at the Bahnhof. Overall - this goes down as en economy hotel in a reasonable area - fine for a night or 2 on a budget.
Stayed there during a business trip. I start with the Good things. Clean rooms,Friendly staff and Good Location (if you want to be near a train station). Thats about it. Now the bad. My room was on the ground level. I could hear the people outside on the street. It was hot so i had to have the window a bit open. The wifi connection was almost non existent. I had to stand by the door or be in the toilet to get a decent signal. Even then it was not good. The room was so small that if i had the suitcase open i almost could not walk from the toilet to the bed. The tv was on a hight that when you are in bed you can not see since with lcd tvs you must be in front and no such a bad view angle. The worse thing was that the bed was very short. My leg was touching the tv furniture. It was not possible not sleep with my legs streached.
Very good and cheap hotel for short time business trip near train station and city center. Service is fully consistent with the proposed price. Rooms well equipped with a minibar, two TVs and a kettle for tea or coffee making, which is also available at no extra charge.
