Learn more about Saumur
Head to the Pays de la Loire to discover a little architectural and cultural gem, nestled in a green setting. Neighbour of Tours and Angers, Saumur, the pearl of Anjou, boasts a unique heritage, both through its history and its use of the famous white stone, tuffeau. Discover without delay this town sparkling with light during a stay in one of our hotels in Saumur.
Saumur will surprise you with its various monuments, churches and half-timbered houses surrounding Place Saint-Pierre, but also with its terraces and lively atmosphere. Taste some local specialities and continue your visit among troglodyte cellars, villages and great wine houses.
Capital of wine-making tradition, Saumur is also deeply steeped in a military and equestrian atmosphere. Combine holidays, sightseeing and cultural discoveries during your holiday in the Pays de la Loire.
Your hotel in Saumur
In Saumur, what strikes you first is the elegance of the town. The tall silhouette of the château immediately sets the tone with its gleaming white tuffeau façade. You will quickly understand why Saumur is nicknamed the White Town.
The equestrian world also remains very close to the town: the Cadre Noir and the French Institute of Horse and Riding are an integral part of local life. Don't hesitate to go on a few horseback rides if time allows. Likewise, the riding school holds public performances, guided tours and galas, which are sure to delight horse lovers.
As for heritage itself, the choice is wide and varied enough to suit all tastes. Start by discovering the half-timbered houses of Place Saint-Pierre, before heading to the Notre-Dame-de-la-Visitation convent, now a barracks. The Église Notre-Dame-de-Nantilly is the oldest religious building in the town, in Romanesque style, and is worth a stop, as is the Chapelle Notre-Dame-des-Ardilliers. Continue with the Bagneux Dolmen for Neolithic enthusiasts and, of course, the Château de Saumur, which remains the town's centrepiece. If you can, the Château de Beaulieu deserves a stop before savouring a few sparkling glasses, always in moderation, at the Ackerman house, or trying your hand at boule de fort. Very unusual, but we won't tell you any more!
As a little anecdote, did you know that Honoré de Balzac's novel Eugénie Grandet is set in Saumur, as is one of the scenes of Victor Hugo's famous novel, Les Misérables?
