Learn more about Izmir
For an immersion in the history of Alexander the Great and the Romans, head to the Aegean Sea and Turkey. Formerly known as Smyrna, Izmir is a destination of choice for lovers of archaeological sites, museums and fortresses. The Roman agora of Smyrna will charm you, as will the Kadifekale fortress.
Turkey's second-largest port, Izmir lets you enjoy exceptional sites, fine sandy beaches and a pleasant climate. The city combines historic heritage and modernity with its lively seafront, colourful markets and local gastronomy. The third-largest city in Turkey, Izmir offers a cosmopolitan and relaxed atmosphere, less touristy than Istanbul but just as captivating.
Western Turkey and the Aegean Sea are just waiting for you to arrive for a colourful tourist stay.
What to do and see in Izmir, Turkey during your stay?
Let yourself be charmed by the majestic Clock Tower, the iconic symbol of Izmir that dominates Konak Square. This Ottoman architectural marvel is the ideal starting point for exploring the city.
Stroll along the Kordon seafront, where lively cafés and traditional restaurants mingle. Lovers of authenticity will appreciate the Kemeraltı grand bazaar with its winding lanes and colourful stalls.
Get a view from above by visiting the historic Asansör lift, from where you can contemplate a breathtaking panorama of the bay. For a cultural break, the Museum of Art and History immerses you in the rich past of ancient Smyrna through its remarkable archaeological collections.
What is the best time to go to Izmir?
Izmir's Mediterranean climate makes it a pleasant destination almost all year round, but some periods are better than others to make the most of your stay.
The months of May to June and September to October are the ideal time to visit Izmir. Temperatures are mild (20-28°C), tourist numbers are moderate and you can fully enjoy the city's attractions and the surrounding beaches.
Summer (July-August) is the high tourist season, with high temperatures that can exceed 35°C. It is the perfect time for beach and water sports lovers, but be prepared for larger crowds and higher prices.
Winter (November to March) is mild by European standards (8-15°C) but can be rainy. It is a good time to discover the city at low prices and explore its museums and historic sites without the crowds.
If you plan your visit for early September, you can attend the Izmir International Fair, held every year in Kültürpark (Culture Park) and one of the city's major events.
