Castres, a tourist destination in the Tarn
Castres stands out for its half-timbered houses overlooking the Agout, which have earned it the nickname of "little Venice", and for a dense historic centre that can be explored on foot.
A renowned cultural heritage
The town's best-known site is the Goya museum, housed in the former 17th-century episcopal palace designed by Jules Hardouin-Mansart. It holds the second-largest collection of Hispanic art in France after the Louvre, with works by Goya, Velázquez, Murillo and Picasso. In the immediate vicinity are the Jardins de l'Évêché, designed in the spirit of André Le Nôtre, and Saint-Benoît Cathedral. The Jean-Jaurès museum, dedicated to the politician born in the town, and the municipal theatre complete the cultural offer. The banks of the Agout are perfect for walks and for boat tours of the Tanners' quarter.
A well-connected town
Castres has an SNCF train station, connected to Toulouse by TER regional train, and an airport (Castres-Mazamet, in Labruguière, about 10 minutes from the centre). Road access is via the A68 motorway, which links Castres to Toulouse and Albi. A new link, the A69, is being completed between Toulouse and Castres and should cut the journey to about 25 minutes when it opens, announced for autumn 2026. In town, the free Libellus bus network serves the centre, the train station and the airport.
A destination for several types of stay
Visitors who come for the heritage enjoy a compact city centre between museums and the banks of the Agout. Business travellers benefit from easy access via the train station, the airport and the motorway. Nature lovers can explore the Sidobre, renowned for its granite formations, or the Haut-Languedoc Regional Nature Park. Golfers have the Castres-Gourjade golf course, a few minutes from the centre.
