Our stay at the Flonk Hotel Groningen ended in a shocking and appalling experience due to the mistreatment we received from the hotel manager. Upon checkout, we were asked to pay a city tax. We requested that this amount be billed to our account, but the woman at the front desk, who claimed to be the manager, became extremely rude and insistent that the tax be paid in cash at the counter. In an attempt to understand our rights, we quickly researched online and discovered that it is actually the hotel's responsibility to manage the city tax, not the guests'. When we presented this information, the situation escalated dramatically. The manager shockingly took my toddler's milk thermos, placed it in a back room, and refused to return it until we made the payment in cash. This behavior was completely unacceptable, unprofessional, and felt like a form of extortion. Left with no other option, we called the police, who confirmed that the manager had no right to withhold our personal property. Throughout this ordeal, I repeatedly asked to speak with another manager or a higher authority, but she arrogantly maintained that she was the only one in charge. Feeling increasingly mistreated, I asked if she would handle the situation the same way if we were locals, as it was clear we were not from the Netherlands and were speaking English. She admitted she would not treat a local the same way, which made us feel targeted and discriminated against, raising serious concerns of racism. It is inconceivable to think that someone would use a toddler's milk thermos as leverage to demand payment. This incident left me feeling incredibly anxious and distressed, especially since my two young children had to witness such hostility and unfair treatment. I cannot recommend the Flonk Hotel Groningen to anyone, particularly to international travelers who might be treated unfairly. This is not how guests should be treated, and the management needs to address these serious concerns immediately. Stay away from this hotel if you expect fair and respectful treatment!
Stayed here before and it's great- Fantastic beds , friendly service, lovely rooms particularly on the sixth floor where the views are fab. Nice bistro with decent food and a sunny terrace by the lake. One gripe - they give you a Nespresso machine with pretty good coffee but only provide these horrible paper cups which are awful to drink from and really too hot to hold. For a luxurious hotel please offer some proper cups for tea or coffee…
If you have small kids, don't go here. It may seem nice with family rooms and all, but kids are not appreciated at the restaurant. Some family rooms are spacious and nice with bath, others (the new ones) not so much.
I had a problem with the reservation through Pagoda platform but the hotel solved it. Good place for families. Rooms are a bit old but clean. They used a environmental system if you don't waste water. Good thing!
We wanted a hotel with a pool (because of the unpredictable weather) and this place worked perfectly. Got a room with an amazing view and staff was friendly and forthcoming with all our requests . Cut off from the centre (with decent access) and a kilometre from the nearest grocery store, but if you want a quiet few days with nature, this works perfectly.
This is my 2nd stay at this hotel since October 2020, around 100 nights in total. Should I return to the area again there is no other hotel I will stay at. The staff at the Hotel and Restaurant could not have been more helpful or friendly. They all made me feel extremely welcome.
I was staying in the hotel on business Living their for 50 nights, my room was spacious, clean and I had a great view over a water ports lake Most Saturday and Sundays I took a walk around the lake. While out walking the local residents were always friendly
We enjoyed a perfect stay during 3 nights and have absolute nothing to complain. Special thanks to the reception, who were very coöperative. Kitchen great stuff (steaks and really nice salad), staff friendly and barman lot of ‘beer knowledge'. We had larger room on 6th with beautiful view on the woods and lake besides lovely sunset. As weather was great we also spend some time on the large terrace. Swimming pool very nice also. Score 9 out of 10 due to small maintenance items needed....
Stayed here for 2 nights at the end of august. It a nice hotel with an excellent terrace lokated at the Paterswolde lake. You can rent a bicycle. It's nice biking around the lake or to the centre of town (15 minutes by bike). Rooms are clean and spacious and breakfast is OK. Covid measures are clearly visable and well maintaned. 1 of the advantages of covid is that, if you'r in time with reserving the pool, you have the whole indoor swimmingpool one hour for yourself. There are only four people allowed at the same time. In summary. Good place to stay. If you intend to do al lot in the city centre you may want to take a hotel downtown.
The hotel looks impressive from the outside. The persons at the reception desk were not very welcoming. My room had a business interior, but was quite small, but nothing else to complain about. Coffee / tea facilities in the room. Parking is difficult in Groningen, hence my choice for this hotel with free parking. Corona measures were well followed.
Stayed here while waiting to take a ship from Eemshaven, Stayed during the Covid-19 so it was very quiet, still able to get food and enjoy a drink. Breakfast was ok but not much of a selection......this could be because of the Covid-19 nightmare. Bar was good but needs a better dark Rum selection.......white Bacardi was all they had!!!!
Pros: Large free parking, nice location near nature has a great view(big windows) big size for a family room for three people and great for outdoor activities(running), easy to reach the city center, good WiFi, Cons: The room had many large windows and the heating system was not efficient enough to heat the room even when set at maximum temperature. At times there was an odor coming from either the ventilation or the rug.
We arrived through a small road to the hotel. Reception staff are courteous and check in is prompt. Arrived at the room with a view to the park. Nice, but the windows are in need for a clean and below there are works ongoing by the hotel. No mention made by the hotel management in any form of letter or electronic notice, except a limited worded banner in the dinning room near the exit door to the garden. Room seems to be renovated. Layout is fine, yet in the bathroom, the shower gel dispenser was empty as well the top rainbow shower did not work. We booked on H/B basis, we took dinner in the main dining room. Service is fine but the food served is average. No atmosphere. Breakfast buffet on the other hand is satisfactory as expected. Pool is a disaster. Too much of chloride in the water, smelly, water not clean and because the pool is sub leased to a third party, full of kids without supervision. Ladder leading to the pool, rusted and loose, pool bathroom dirty. Overall this is a conference destination which makes it not suited for a weekend break stay or short holiday. Free parking and WiFi with strong signal.
Plus points: -Nice food in the bar -Reasonably priced drinks -Comfortable bed -Very quiet Downsides -Dark, pokey little room with a boring view & bed literally faces a depressing blank stone wall. -No room service! If I'm on my own for business, I often prefer to eat in my own room. Never occurred to me that I would be able to. - The Restaurant offers just 5 meal options and they're all very expensive. Apparently it's a “pop up” whilst the main restaurant is being refurbished. Nothing mentioned about that upon booking. - No iron/ board in the rooms. I asked at reception and was told I had to collect it from there and carry it up! I've never heard of this before, maybe you'd expect it in a B&B but in such a big hotel?
Lovely hotel with excellent rooms, very clean. The staff was amazing, the location is the best you can get. Very happy with the experience. The bed was very comfortable and very big. The pillows were excellent.
The plus: rooms with view of lake Hoornsemeer and one side of the building is architectonically interesting (the sloped glass side). Not so nice: tiny rooms that don't deserve the name 'comfort'. It is more three star than four. The hotel is in a off center part of town. Breakfast selection is okay, not four star abundant. Renovation of the main restaurant means you will be eating breakfast in an industrial 'room', prices for breakfast are not adapted to incorporare that in July and August of 2019.
We stayed here for two nights. The rooms were clean and modern. The staff was friendly and helpful. The breakfast was excellent - very delicious food and a wide variety of cold and warm choices (this is probably typical for Europeans but very impressive to Americans). The restaurant was also very good - but that is a separate review. It is located in an out of the way corner, which some people will like and some may not.
Not so great room. No exceptional service. Rather 3*. Chaotic parking lot. Very disappointing stay for us. This hotel was a former Hampshire hotel. They just changed the name. Nothing else. No renovation. Our expectation now being a BW Plus hotel was high due to previous experience in other BW Plus hotels. Approaching the hotel by car is a bit confusing due to the large number of company names near a parking lot. Its not clear where to park being a guest of the hotel. Lots of cars where parked criss-cross. We were checked in by an in our opinion uninterested employee. No recognition to our Diamond BW status. No upgrade. No welcome bonuspoints offered. We had to ask for it. Upgrade was declined due to full house. Standard room was small. Outdated. Tiny bathroom with room for just 1 person at the time. No A/C. Coffee tray with instant coffee. Room can be opened after a study of the instructions in the hotelguide. Breakfast was average. Buffet style. Fried eggs can be ordered. Not many healthy options. No soya or light in sugar / reduced fat products. Price €15.50 pp We thought BW Groningen Centre was a better option.
A very nice and modern hotel. Located next to a beautiful area. Kind personnel, and Free parking.- When checking I ask a room facing the lake, rather than the Highway.- Note the free shuttle they advertise only run after 10:00 am.
From more than 5 years , we choose this hotel for his good price/value quote when we are in Groningen . Very good breakfast. Now with our electric car it's a must. The bar is open late and it's nice to drink something after a long road.
Family of 3 stayed one night on the way from Germany to Amsterdam. Huge room with great views and block out blinds. My daughter was looking forward to swimming however closed for most of our visit due to swimming lessons. But she managed two quick swims. Excellent shuttle service to town (free) and worth a walk around the town. Free parking.
I had high hopes for our stay at the Best Western Plus but in the end it was only my daughter who left impressed - and that's because of the swimming pool. Our early check in was hassle free but when we got into our room it had an odour and looked like it hadn't been dusted in weeks. The room size was ideal - including the kids bed around a little corner - all with a great view of the lake. The decor was dull and a little dated but the beds were clean and comfortable. There was no mini bar as promised in the room literature. The air con didn't work very well and either that and/or the layer of dust gave my wife a cough which she still has one week later. It automatically switched off once the excruciatingly-slow mechanical openers allowed fresh air in through the window. Staff were friendly and helpful - especially the drivers of the excellent free shuttle service into the centre of town. The service is available every 20 minutes on Fridays, Saturdays and Sunday morning but needs to be booked in advance. Be careful of other guests stealing your place which happened to us a few times. Well worth it as it is a lengthy walk into town. The pool was small but welcome. There is no sauna or hot tub but the facilities were adequate. No issues connecting to the free WiFi. Staff confused our room number a few times - including at check out when we narrowly avoided being charged for services we hadn't ordered...
I was travelling to this hotel with a large group. 1.Our room's phone line was cut. We reported it and it was never fixed. Some of the rooms had a safe and hot pot. Ours did not. 2.The breakfast was nice, but no gluten free breads or cereals were offered. 3. I wanted to swim in the afternoon, but it was closed to guests, because of public swimming lessons. There was no hot tub in the pool area. 4. The restaurant is only open certain hours. In the afternoon, I asked the if serving a gluten free meal would be a problem....They said no. Well, I came back for dinner and it was a nightmare. They recommended things as being gluten free and then when I ordered them they would come back to me and say that they couldn't make it gluten free. We went back and forth and finally ended with plain meat, rice and salad. Then the price was like 26-28 Euros or something. I was not happy! 6. It's out a ways and takes a bit of a bus trip to get into town. The hotel had just changed hands, but still. I do not recommend this place.
First off..... The best rain ?? shower and towels we ever had!!! The rooms are very nice and neat. Room service was on point too. And a private car to take and pickup from the city.Great job guys! Two thumbs up for the staff and crew. 1 - luv ?
On the outskirts of Groningen so car, taxi or bicycle needed. Excellent restaurant and parking facilities. Room not generous in size so a bit cramped but comfortable. Fairly noisy for room 3026 as there are motors or compressors running intermittently 24\\7.
But seems undergoing renovations. My room is fine except no shampoo put in bathroom (trivial issue). Some folks in our group were upset as no hairdryer in their room and indeed not even a plugin for that. Another found the safe in his room was not bolted down so one could just pick it up and go. The safer used were also quite small so I could not put my iMac inside. But as noted the place is undergoing renovations. The free bfast was decent. Some of us had dinner in the restaurant and both the chef's special and the catch of the day were excellent.
Recently was booked a room by the company I worked for in the Hampshire Hotel Plaza. The check in was very professional and effortless after the long day of traveling. The Rooms nice and clean with everything you need nice and fast wifi. The restaurant very accommodating and food of high quality with good service. Deserves a top rating.
We stayed one night passing through, The rooms are a good size and clean.we had dinner in the restaurant and the food was very nice. The breakfast was very good lots of options available. The hotel is dog friendly and all staff was very friendly and helpful. I wouldn't definitely stay here again.
Built early nineties as the KPN staff training centre, and at least the standard rooms never got an upgrade from a training centre overnight room to a decent 2017-compatible guest room. Still not bad, with some very good points but also weaker points, as long as for the proper price. Good: very helpful and effective staff (well except room maid, see later). Excellent 4-star bteakfast. Free shuttle to station (needs prebooking). Good restaurant for dinner too. Great location for a walk around the lake, or excursions into city centre. Rooms big enough, but spartanicly equipped: e.g. old TV, smallish bathroom with bad lighting, no coffee/tea making. Not so good: pool area needs a major overhaul. Lockers without keys, no pool towels, messy. Room main left dirty tea cup in the room instead of bringing it back to restaurant. Wifi was fast WHEN it worked but that was hardly longer than 2 minutes, after that ‘SSL problems' on the notebook which mostly got resolved by disconnecting and connecting again. They have a desktop PC down in the hall for shared use, this might be needed as backup; did not use it.
Was on a short business trip. Courteous staff, lovely grounds and loads of greenery all around. Room was clean and comfortable. The dining hall is well appointed & well spaced out. The grounds around have loads of walking space.
The building is amazing . as you arrive up to it , The Staff are very friendly and helpful. it has lots of relaxing spaces to chill inside and out :-) . The rooms are clean not to small and the bathrooms are a good size , Breakfast is amazing so much choice
