    « Afternoon tea »

Went for afternoon tea although it was very nice and staff were lovely little disappointed as it wasnt as nice as previous one I had a few months ago nearly half the cakes.wish I took a picture to compare today.

« the hotel is all right but the restaurant is a NO GO »

cut the long story short: the hotel: missing door in a wardrobe but a letter of apology on the table. the bed hard but I like it this way. good location for the town good shower and bath in general small swimming pool and mini gym still ok all clean THE RESTAURANT don't try it if u r over 60 you will die before u get served. the place was empty. 4 of us ordered and we got the mains 40 mins later. those were mostly burgers no justification for such delay another 20 mins to get deserts but they are just ice cream. we have been here 2 days so far and it was exactly the same yesterday so it is not one off. see the pic of my meal. it was a sea bass and the price is over 13 quid. I may be wrong but it is miniscule for 13 quid. I returned it and asked for a burger. 20 mins ago and still waiting.

« Good , but could try harder »

I stay here sometimes on business and overall its a good experience. The hotel is nicely located and food and service is good. Only feedback, that's not positive is that more smiles and a look as if your happy to see a guest is always a good idea when 'checking in'. This for me lets the hotel down as it is 'hit and miss' as to whether you get a warm welcome or a 'I can't be bothered' to look up from the screen and smile or interact at all. There is always back of House , which is a valuable part of a hotel if customer service is not suited. Apart from this point the food I thought is good, service attentive and staff are good.

« Where Angels stay during their journey »

Very friendly reception Nice old house Feeling like Harry Potter as each room has its own name Lobby with mixed but cosy furniture. You feel as if you were part of a fairy tale. Very supportive personnell

« Staff good. Restaurant good. Room not value for money. »

Front of house, bar, foyer attractive and welcoming Restaurant fine with unchanging menu. Staff attentive and helpful. We were in the courtyard wing but despite dire weather no umbrellas availabe (unlike BW plus Blunsdon House near Swindon. Room: bed comfortable, Unheated bathroom, really chilly. Shower curtain stained and dirty. Changed quiclkly by excellent room staff, replaced by another old, stained but clean one. Net curtains really dusty and dirty. Curtain hook missing and curtain hangind off as a result. Might expect it in slightly down market B&B but NOT acceptable in BW 4star plus at £120 a night.

« Would not stay again. »

The stay was OK, and the staff were lovely. However, we did have a few issues with the room which in my opinion are unacceptable. The bathroom was very dirty. The toilet did not flush properly, we had to pump the flush 5-6 times to get it to work, which at night time was very noisy. The bathroom door handle came off whilst I was inside, which was distressing. Would definitely not recommend this hotel to others.

    « Bar »

Just so you don't get caught out, the bar closes to non residents at 10. 30 pm ....... and that's on a Saturday night, and they had run out of two of the four draught beers. It was a disappointing end to a lovely evening.

« enjoyable and relaxing short break »

We stayed 2 nights on the DBB offer and were pleasantly surprised from the start -we had a superb room in the main house which was very spacious, clean and comfortable, the breakfast was good-hot and a good choice, found this a very relaxing breakfast compared to other hotels and staff were very efficient serving drinks, clearing down and constantly refilling the choices available. Dinner on both evenings was delicious and freshly cooked especially the sea bass and cod and the chips were lovely and fluffy inside crispy and not greasy outside, the service again in the evening was great-just the right amount of time between courses (unlike most hotels who trot out with mains as soon as starter is cleared) we also used the pool area which was lovely and again very clean We would certainly recommend The Angel and hope to return

    « Great break »

Booked here for a "walking break". Given a lovely comfortable room. Dinner was ok. They supplied a fantastic picnic which we enjoyed after our long walk, followed by a lovely swim. All staff very friendly and welcoming.

    « Late Lunch »

Stopped off en route to a meeting, but the staff were really pleasant and helpful. Had a sandwich lunch, but was impressed with the offerings. Great value and good service. The public areas do get busy and as such some of the tables were left with dirty plates. That aside though I would recommend it.

    « Very lovely hotel »

We had a lovely break before our baby comes I'm 6months pregnant. We had really bad snow and I didn't want to travel so the hotel let us keep the room on they were so helpful. The good is lovely too and all the staff are very helpful and friendly we would definately recommend this hotel.

« Lovely Staff, Very Dog Friendly »

I really don't understand the bad reviews of this place. The staff were lovely and accommodating, the food was top notch. Our dog was made to feel very welcome, which was very important to us. Will definitely be back.

    « Consistently poor »

I visit the bar lounge frequently for coffee and lunch due to its convenient location. In the past 12 months I have visited many times. Each visit usually involves a long wait or wrong order or no order at all. The waiting staff, for whom there seems to be a high turnover are always terribly sweet and helpful but totally let down by the back-room organisation. This morning I waited 35 minutes for a tea cake which, when it arrived was cold. There's absolutely no point in complaining to the poor stressed out front of house staff... they are always sorry but nothing changes. Why do I continue to go there? Well it's very convenient, a nice cosy environment and when it arrives the food is ok. Also I'm an optimist... I always think that there might be a good reason for their incompetence on any particular day but it seems nothing ever improves! Clearly this is a systemic problem of basic organisation and management. Please get your act together.. in a town where there's little or no competition this venue could be excellent but sadly is barely adequate!

    « Fantastic room »

Stayed in room 301 with my partner, absolutely amazing room, clean, tidy, every thing you need in a hotel room. Arrived a few hours before check in, and was able to get our keys early. Dinner was really tasty, I had the Cumberland sausage and my partner had the steak and ale pie, all tasty, service was excellent, friendly staff. In the morning while I was waiting for my partner in the reception area I was offered a free capuccino as they were training on the coffee machine, thought that was a nice gesture, Breakfast was buffet style, we also had the full English, again really tasty, and again everything you could want from a buffet style breakfast area. All in all a very nice hotel, the staff we did see were very friendly and attentive, we will definitely be staying again when we're in the area. Thank you very much for an enjoyable stay

« Really Poor Room Service »

Arrived late and missed the restaurant however receptionist advised that sandwiches would be available via room service. Got settled in and then tried to order a sandwich, only 5 to choose from so not a great range. Phoned down and got the impression that the chap on room service really did not want to handle the request. He was blunt, he did not know the sandwiches available and mid-conversation he left the phone and went to the kitchen. When he called back he said, "might have a tin of tuna in the kitchen." I kept having to repeat myself when eventually being informed there was also some ham and requesting one tuna and one plain ham sandwich. It arrived on stale bread and one sandwich delightfully had no filling. His response when I complained was, "well I've never had a request for a sandwich in 3 months." His whole attitude stunk, his service and knowledge extremely poor. Has actually put me off re-booking at this hotel.

« Perfect for Dog Owners »

Wonderful to find a hotel that allows dogs in their rooms for FREE. We booked a executive double room and stayed with our 4 Chihuahua's for 2 nights. Perfect wonderful stay. Highly recommended. Hotel has a good swimming pool which we did not use.Very good buffet breakfast. Located in the centre of Chippenham and good parking at the hotel.

« Nice Hotel - Would Stay Again »

Stayed for one night in February 2018. The room was a good size and very clean. As it was only one night didn't get the chance to use any of the facilities. Reception was a little chaotic when checking out and so it took ages, but overall a nice hotel. Would stay again.

« Could have been better »

We booked an overnight stay here as we were meeting up with friends in Chippenham. We planned to eat at the hotel and meet up with our friends and go out for the evening. Unfortunately we were not told that the restaurant was closed that evening until we arrived and booked in. Apparently they had a function booked. We then planned to quickly shower and try to find a suitable place for a meal in Chippenham. As we had not been before and did not know the local restaurants it was a little hit and miss. Unfortunately we were then slowed down even more as there was no hot water available in the shower in our bathroom. Because of the problem finding somewhere to eat, we had no alternative but to take a cold shower and inform the receptionist on our way out. They did offer to swap the room but we did not then have the time to do this and just asked that they please ensure we had hot water available for a shower in the morning. Unfortunately this did not happen, still no hot water in the morning. I was very upset. No-one from the management team contacted us and it wasnt until we went to check out and pay the bill that there was a note on our account from the management saying that they would not charge us for the drink we had on our return at the end of the evening. Whilst I was thankful for this I do think that it was not very good that at no point did anyone from the management come to speak with us. Whilst the hotel reception areas and grounds were lovely I was also a little disappointed with the housekeeping in the room. I would probably not have noticed it quite so much if everything else had been okay but there was areas of the carpet that were stained quite heavily as well.

    « Meeting Rooms »

Booked some last minute meeting rooms here after electrical supply issues nearby. Staff were really helpful and ensured we had everything we needed to make our day run smoothly. Rooms were nice and quiet, with loads of onsite parking available.

« Pleasant hotel, centrally located, ample car park, close to EV charger »

A very pleasant hotel with comfortable room and quaint large building. There is a large car park and the hotel is bang in the middle of Chippenham. Opposite the hotel car poark is a public car park (Gladstone Road) which has an Electric Vehicle charger. The restaurant, however, has quite a limited menu but the food was OK.

« Good quality hotel in town centre »

Nice building with rooms in newer building through the garden. Rooms excellent as expected. All a bit impersonal though. Bar prices extortionate! Breakfast good but I wish hotel chefs knew how to cook mushrooms properly!

« Very nice and central location »

We stayed for 1 night. Hotel is located in centre of Chippenham with parking. We stayed in the main hotel. The room was very nice. Huge bed and lots of room. We did not eat evening dinner, the menu seemed to be fish chips, burger chips etc, which I did not fancy. We walked along the road and had a lovely Greek. Breakfast was a nice buffet. Food was hot and enjoyable. The staff all seemed pleasant. My only concern would be the reception. Very small. On the desk were everyone's checkin forms so whilst standing there we could see everyone's home address (knowing their home was now empty). Also showed what they had paid (one person paid £30 more than us and another £20 less). Did not feel very secure as reception was left unattended. I would recommend they keep people's personal details locked away so they cannot be read by people standing in reception. Overall very nice and would return

« A pleasant and good value stay »

I booked three rooms for one night on a January Friday night at a very good price in the sale. Our rooms were spacious and comfortable with large beds and everything was clean. Breakfast was included in the price and was more than adequate, and we found all of the staff really nice and friendly. We liked our rooms, the attractive courtyard area, the pool and the bar. Although just slightly dated in parts, the hotel felt fresh and welcoming. We didn't find much of interest in Chippenham and found it a very ordinary town, but we absolutely loved our trips to nearby Lacock and Castle Combe - two beautiful villages within 15 mins drive each that the hotel manager recommended to us.

« Nice hotel, great location and good amenities »

Room: A friend and myself booked two rooms at this hotel on the night of Thursday the 12th of October as we had a blacksmithing course in he area. The rooms where very spacious with a great en-suite bathroom which included a bath. Everything was tidy and clean with nice furniture including a lounge chair near the window to relax in. The bed was spacious and great to sleep in, very comfortable and warm. Pillows were good with proper support. WiFi was available throughout the hotel itself and in the rooms. Everything was clean and well-maintained which means no drawbacks or complaints to the room. Staff: Friendly staff which helped out when needed even when my friend ordered a grog in the evening at the bar as he was feeling under the weather. This was of course not on the menu but they still made it for him without question. That is nice service! Breakfast: Good and quite extensive breakfast (continental) although I must say personally I'd preferred a bit more brown bread(rolls) and not just white. A really nice meat and cheese selection was present as well with thickly cut ham which really is a plus in my book. Other facilities: A swimming pool is available as well as a gym but unfortunately we weren't able to make use of it since we got back quite late. (pool closed at 10) There is also a nice centre garden area in between the main building and the swimming pool where one can sit and enjoy a drink. Public transport: Good public transport connection as Chippenham has a train station and the hotel is right in the middle of town. Location: As said above, the hotel itself is situated right in the middle of town with a nice selection of restaurants in walking distance as well as a large supermarket close-by. Closing Thoughts: I'd definitely stay at this hotel in the future should I be in the vicinity of Chippenham again, nice room with good breakfast and the swimming pool is a good bonus.

    « Incredibly friendly staff »

Stayed there for 2 nights recently. A lovely smart hotel. Nice sized bedroom, modern, clean with everything you need. The main thing about it was just how friendly and efficient the staff were. We had a great stay.

    « Weekend away »

I took my children away for the weekend. We loved the hotel. Staff very friendly and helpful. Bedrooms were lovely and comfy. We had dinner and breakfast at the hotel. Good variety and catered for the children well . We used the swimming pool three times. Perfect for the children. They really enjoyed it. Lots of local shops and restaurants in walking distance. Staff really went out there way for us. Nothing was too much trouble. Will definitely return.

    « Fine »

It was fine, the room was comfortable, and clean. We were initially given a key to an unserviced room and had to go back to reception and have another room allocated. The safe didn't work as it had a low battery. The breakfast was fine, although perhaps as we came into breakfast at 9.10 we were a little late ( it finishes at 10) as there was one danish, not one sort, but literallly one left. The beans did require a deep mining experience with an ill shaped spoon, These are just first world comments I know. The staff were friendly and polite. The pool was very nice a good temperature and we enjoyed using it. Everything else was 'fine'.

    « An Angel Experience »

My sister-in-law and I had a wonderful experience at the Angel Hotel. We were greeted warmly and any question that we had was answered by a friendly host. Our twin room was warm, neat, and clean. We stayed 5 nights and were greeted with a delicious breakfast each morning. There was also plenty of parking in the back. I appreciate the dependability of Best Western hotels and have stayed in many. My one regret is that I didn't ask about getting credit on my Best Western membership like do in the U.S.

    « Christmas Party night »

I have had many Christmas and Easter meals here before and so was looking forward to it! I was greatly disappointed. The starter of mushroom looked as if it was frozen diced mushroom and you could barely see the few bit of chorizo. The main course came with just one roast potato and so when asked another bowl was brought out. The veg was overlooked and mushy. The final straw however was the two tiny slices of Christmas pudding for dessert with a random strawberry on it. For the £29 paid I was expecting more. If you cater to Christmas parties you need to be at the top of your game-this puts me off coming at any other time of year. You have lost a customer in me.

    2
« Great House Christmas Party »

Woefully understaffed with 3 waitresses to serve 80 people, judging by the speed food was coming out of the Kitchen I think there must have been only one person in there. Sat down to eat at 14:00, Main courses took 1 hour and a half from the first to last to be served at 16:00. Needless to say it was cold when it came out, slopped on the plate, by the overstretched Chef. To say ?School Dinner Standard? would be too kind, in all, appalling service and food. Not the fault of the staff who were clearly embarrassed, but the penny pinching management trying to employ teenage girls, no doubt on minimum wage. If you plan to cater at scale, employ enough staff! I won an afternoon tea in a raffle, but gave it away as I would not eat here again even if free.

    « Ok. »

Stayed here on business and room was ok and decent standard. Pool looked ok but didn't use it. Because they had Xmas party night bar menu was fixed 2 or 3 course and standard menu was only available via room service! Very odd, it's either not available or it is. Fixed menu didn't have decent choice so I ordered from standard menu in room and took the hit for the tray charge. Didn't bother with breakfast.

    « Expensive V Quality and Service »

Went to a Xmas party night £37,on 9th December 2017, Sardines have more room. once sat down it was very difficult to get up to the postage stamp size dance floor, even the staff struggled. No elbow room to eat the mediocre meal with a bowl of washed out vegetable. Butter was offered 20 minutes after the cheese and biscuits were finished. a strong pair of glasses were needed to see the Xmas pudding. Large GLASS of wine £10.75 and £4.80 for a large diet coke. Will never go again, Pheasant carvery much better value for money and atmosphere.

Stayed Saturday night, lovely room, powerful shower, clean, good breakfast that was hot, friendly staff, would recommend. Lovely Christmas atmosphere. Handy for train station Bath only 15 minutes away.

« scruffy and over priced »

The Receptionist at the Angel Hotel was rude and unfriendly that was the start of the visit, the room in the main building was tired and scruffy, black mold in the shower/bath, stained cushions on the bed and the furniture old and scratched. Food shocking no wonder the restaurant was empty, and the breakfast staff did not have a clue who were served and who were not served or what was going on. Very poor for the price, I will not visit again.

« Cracking meal and super efficient staff. »

Visited here after being told that the new chef has totally turned around the menu and people highly recommend the place. We visited here on Sunday evening around 745pm it was just the two of us so we were seated promptly by a well mannered friendly manager called Emma who informed us that there was a very large party in at 8pm, so there maybe some delay if ordering once the large party arrived. We were seated in a well lit warm environment and served by a lady called Georgie who was friendly. We ordered starters and the Duck and Port pate was amazing and my partners starter of Salmon mousse was excellent. We ordered the Turkey roast and the portions were very generous. What made our evening was the friendly staff and the chef actually served us which made the experience extra special. We will recommend to our friends and definitely be back again. Well done team you've come a long way from last year when we visited.

« Wish we could have stayed longer »

Had a break away with my fiance after a very busy year, and this was exactly what we needed. Plenty of parking and a very warm welcome on arrival. We were upgraded to the Lowden and this was just beautiful! Plenty of space, a big comfortable four poster bed and a lovely bathroom. I loved the window seats to sit and watch the world go by. The only disappointment we had was that we weren't staying longer! We had dinner included that evening and although quiet the bar and restaurant had a lovely atmosphere with attentive staff. The food was delicious and hot! We were just so full up we couldn't do it justice. Used the swimming pool during our visit, again this was a great asset, lovely and warm and a great size. We had the difficult choice of whether to have a lie in or another swim the next morning (the lie in won!). The following day we visited Longleat and the hotel even arranged and booked the tickets for us which was fantastic! Overall a great stay, wish we could have stayed a few more nights.

The rooms were spacious, with plenty of extras i.e. ironing board, iron, safe, hair dryer and tea making facilities, all staff were of a high standard AND VERY HELPFUL, all the meals were of a high standard, however could have been WARMER.

    « Birthday/near Christmas celebration »

My choice was an absolute accident, just was looking for a place to stay with an indoor pool for my teenage child and ?not too far to travel? option to celebrate my birthday near Christmas Day... Booked over the phone through the call center, price felt cheap enough and everything felt right... Spending a whole day just entertaining my child (suppose to be my birthday mind), arrived very late... tired... miserable... just awful weather... arrived to a... most welcome reception ever experienced, most cosy look I've seen for years, a luxury room I haven't expected and a comfortable bed I lost myself in... and clean... and tidy... and stylish... and just right... wow... It felt like a home! We were impressed. We were happy. We were relaxed. A heated swimming pool was small but deep and cosy... A Restorant wasn't perfect, couple moments could make me angry in any other place, but here... I was so pleased and happy with everything else, I even didn't bother to complain... in fact I hardly remember now what exactly upset us because the overall experience was just amazing. I think stuff simply were too tired... was very late. Getting close to this year birthday my child is begging me to rebook this place again and most definite I will... Thank you, guys, great memories! Xxx

    « One night in Chippenham .... »

Stayed here overnight for a business appointment in the area the following morning. The hotel is well-signposted approaching from the M4 and is easy to find. Check-in was a real pleasure with very welcoming, friendly staff. The hotel does not have a lift so be aware of this if mobility is an issue - stairs to the second floor are narrow and uneven. We were very happy with our room - spacious, restful colour-scheme and sparkly clean. At the front of the hotel there was some building work in progress and these works were screened off with posters giving information about the hotel, including a list of daily special menu offers. For Thursdays the offer was advertised as " Order 2 steaks (or fish) and chips and get a free bottle of wine" - turns out that fish is not included in this offer despite the wording. A very comfortable night's sleep - hot water into the bath and shower takes time (quite a long time in fact) so be patient. Breakfast was average but not bad for £8. The hotel is in a pleasant location in the centre of Chippenham and there is a large car park at the rear (don't forget to register your vehicle on the touch-screen when checking-in to avoid a parking fine). There is also a swimming pool and fitness centre. Couldn't fault the staff in any way - very keen to please, approachable, helpful and happy. Overall a comfortable and enjoyable stay.

    « A real dump - expensive dump »

This hotel is not cheap and you do not get value for money. The Receptionist was neither professional or friendly, not a great start to the visit. The rooms are tired/scruffy with black mold in the shower which was cold, the towels thin and scratchy. Food terrible and staff miserable and uninterested this was the same at breakfast, will not be going there again. Plus the car park was a nightmare lots of cars parked there were covered in bird crap.

    « A Brilliantly Dog Friendly Hotel »

I arrived to find I had been booked into a family room with my 3 dogs. Both myself and my dogs were given a warm welcome from the staff. The room was huge and the staff were so friendly. I ordered room service which was delicious. I have been so pleasantly surprised by this hotel and have already decided I am coming back in January and february as I am on another dog training course in the area and I've already recommended it to people on the course I am here to do.

    « Need to update »

I stayed for two nights with some colleagues. Two of us had no hot water, it was tepid showers at best, with non working control on the tap. There was a strange sour smell in the corridor. Breakfast was poor and not hot. Receptionist was a pleasure. She was friendly and professional.

    « Disappointing return visit »

Stayed 20-23 October and stayed in room in old building which was fine apart from 22nd and 23rd Oct no hot water from shower and (like another customer) which ever way handle turned still no hot water. Hot water only from bath taps. Monday morning before 9.00 am workman were next to our window above porch drilling etc. At breakfast just filling my glasses att breakfast bar and waiter pounced and asked for my order - couldn't be bothered to come over to our table! Also my husband was still eating his cereal when waiter appeared with our cooked breakfast which we had to ask them to take away! Rather cold breakfast returned! I overheard waitress asking another table if they would like hot food - didn't even use language of continental or full English breakfast! Also my last moan the swimming pool was out of use due to a problem for duration of our stay. Have stayed many times in past and have been really pleased overall - I hope this is a temporary blip!

    « Visiting Relatives »

Having been a regular user of Best Western Hotels in North America over many years, I anticipated that the same high standards would prevail. Sadly this was not to be the case. On arrival the reception was fairly good and we (four in party) were informed that both our double rooms had been upgraded at no extra charge. We had accommodation in the main building which despite its history...is beginning to look its age. Breakfast took ages and having waited 45 minutes for a full English breakfast which on arrival, part of it was cold i.e. bacon and eggs as well as the toast. having brought this to the attention of the kitchen supervisor, she said that the meal would be replaced. I waited for fifteen minutes and it hadn't arrived. As I had another engagement...I left without breakfast. On the two days staying there, I attempted to have showers. Despite hot water being available in the bath taps...no hot water was forthcoming, having moved the control in every direction without success. Two cold showers were the result! The room (double) was fairly spacious and had character... that said, the heating was on request (twice) and closed down at random! The staff who when we had the opportunity to speak to them were all courteous and keen to please. A number of them explained that the hotel was undergoing a number of changes and new management.

    « So bad I felt I had to leave a review!!! »

Hi folks, Normally I wouldn't even consider writing a review to provide advice to others on a restaurant I had visited, because as far as I'm concerned my time is more important. However in this particular instance the service was so bad I feel I have to tell others so the Angel looks at its processes and makes some serious changes. Actually we visited the Angel for dinner some 5 or 6 years ago, and left disappointed with the service vowing never to go back, however when in town having a relaxing shopping trip with my wife (No kids in tow) we agreed that lightening couldn't hit twice and a lunchtime treat at the Angel would be a nice addition to our trip out. To cut a long story short, it took around an hour for the food to arrive, and when it did my wife's meal was so bad, both badly cooked and a poor quality that she simply couldn't eat it. We complained to the manager, who agreed the meal was substandard and inedible, so we asked for a refund for both meals. This was agreed to, but then during the refund transaction the manager unbelievably then asked us if we wanted a refund for both meals. The guy needs to go back to catering college and learn the basics. I hope the Angel sees this review and makes the appropriate changes. Thx

« Serious problems in the kitchen!! »

We must have visited the Angel dozens of times for lunch since we moved down to Wiltshire and until today it has always been very pleasant . Normally it only takes 10 or 15 minutes for our food to arrive. Today it took over an hour and we had only ordered a sandwich and a starter - nothing too complex. To make matters worse people who arrived and ordered after us where getting served much quicker, despite us complaining several times. Not very impressive for what has always been considered one of the better places to eat in Chippenham. And it was also clear that some of the other tables were experiencing problems with their orders. To be fair the food, when it finally arrived, was good and the waiting staff and the manager where most appologetic and they did give us a refund on the second round of drinks we ordered whilst waiting . But until we are happy they have sorted out their kitchen problems, we won't be going back.

« Great value and fun place to stay »

I was attending a gathering celebrating my son's wedding and stayed at the Angel In Chippenham. When i arrived there was some confusion about how many nights i had confirmed. it was not the hotels fault, most likely my lacking computer skills, but the staff was flexible and gave me the same rate for the second night. The room was very big and comfy with a great bed. The location was very good and within walking distance of some good eating. There is a nice indoor pool and work out area. I highly recommend this find place.

« Great Hotel and Staff but let down with Evening Meal »

Stayed at the Hotel for 4 day in March and was great this time was a different matter as Hotel and Staff are great but Evening Meal was just a Bar meal !!! so if you are going to have a Nice evening meal in the Hotel forget it. I also had the Treacle sponge and custard and when it arrived I asked if this was it as had Jam over and was clearly the Cake that was left over from the afternoon.

    « Comfortable and enjoyable »

The Angel Hotel is right in the centre of the lovely town of Chippenham, with easy walking to shops, pubs and restaurants and with a car park at the rear. Our room was a good size with a warm, comfortable bed and a spacious bathroom. WiFi was free, easy to use and provided a good signal. The food was well-cooked, tasty and served promptly, even when our large party of 48 were eating at the same time. Drinks at the bar were fairly expensive but that is not uncommon in a hotel like this. The Angel is an old coaching inn with lots of history and character, probably with planning restrictions limiting the amount of change permitted. Bedrooms inside the main building reflect this, with uneven floors and fairly small windows. By contrast, our bedroom in the annex befitted the modern building that it was. The disadvantage of the annex was the dash across to the main building when raining. There are no lifts in the hotel but staff were on hand to carry heavy cases upstairs. The staff were all efficient and helpful and the young duty manager was on hand throughout the weekend, greeting us on arrival and ensuring prompt service in the restaurant. She even came to check that our departure went smoothly and wished us a safe journey. A few minor points needing attention were reported on departure but, overall, this was a very enjoyable stay in a good hotel.

« Digusting dirty room and way overpriced! »

Me and my husband stayed for 1 night at the hotel on 30th September. When we arrived at 2pm to check into our room, we were told that it wasn't ready. At 3pm they said the room was ready for us and as soon as we entered the dust and dirt was clear to see! Thick dust on top door frames, so visible that you could see the dust hanging. Carpets and not been hovered and look old and dirty. The toilet had thick brown slime running down the sides. After finding this, we checked the bed, duvet and pillows. The pillows had big patches of dribble stains. This was the last straw! I went down to the reception to complain, and they came across as if they didn't care. The manager then came and said she would get her cleaning staff to clean the rooms. 2 and a half hours later they said it was ready. This was 5:30, bearing in mind the check in time was 2pm!! For £120 a night this is the worst hotel we have ever stayed and spoilt our weekend. The staff were unprofessional, constantly on their mobiles and were not interested in the slightest. Be warned DO NOT STAY HERE!!

    « Passable Hotel »

Room very clean and good size, however to reach the room we had to climb 4 sets of stairs, NO LIFT, in this day and age not acceptable, then the room, as you opened the door we were met with a blast of heat no matter where we looked we could not find any switch off point or thermostat, we were told later that apparently it was underfloor heating. Food wasn't bad, restaurant/bar service was reasonable. Overall thought the hotel was tired, could do with a major re-vamp inside, would we return probable not.

    « Good hotel »

Stayed for a night a few weeks ago and really enjoyed it. The hotel is easy to find with plenty of parking. The room was large, tidy and clean and I had a great nights sleep. The hotel has a lovely swimming pool an other good amenities. Breakfast was nice but I would have preferred the buffet style of breakfast rather than ordering it, as they got it wrong. It wasn't a big deal and I would recommend this hotel for anyone coming to the area.

« Over priced, very average, no better than a motel »

Paid £144 for a grubby room that should not have cost more than £70. Where do I start? Dirty tissue on the floor on entering the room, grubby tired old scuffed carpet, old bathroom in need of a refurb, old tired chipped furniture in the room, no mini bar, coffee sachets all decaffeinated, door key fob cracked and patched up with sello tape. The breakfast was ok (included in the price of the room) but no fresh fruit and the coffee was awful - watery and very weak. We asked for a cuppicino at breakfast but was was told we would have to pay extra for it!! What? At £144 per night, a simple cuppicino attracts a charge!!! And beware, a member of our party got a parking ticket for parking in the hotel car park - she had not realised she had to inform the receptionist of her car registration number! Don't be fooled by the nice exterior of the hotel - inside it is extremely tired and a little depressing

    « Character and charm »

Several buildings are blended around a quiet Gladstone garden. Car par is at the rear and it takes a few minutes to locate Rebeption at the Front. Rooms are comfortable. Restaurant and snack meals are good value. We were unfortunate in that the Receptionist was not welcoming and officious. We did not let that put us off. However, a 10.30 am phone call from the Receptionist on our departure warning us to be out by 11 am was abrupt and left us feeling we were a nuisance. WILL NOT RETURN.

« Let down by the cleaning »

I was really surprised that a hotel of this standard had rooms that were not cleaned properly. My room was in the old part of the hotel and very comfortable. The skirting boards had not been cleaned for months as the dust was clearly visible. The tea tray had not been cleaned from the last occupant but worse than this was that the bath had scum round the sides. I did sleep well as it was quiet. They mentioned that bath robes were available on request but it would have been nice if they were already in the rooms. Location is the centre of Chippenham which is what you pay for. There was a swimming pool, a nice courtyard area and parking. The reception seemed a bit temporary but it was an interesting historic building. I ate dinner and breakfast at the hotel which was of high quality. This hotel could be great.

« Return to the Angel for an lovey weekend »

The Angel is one of the few hotels in the country we have visited for a second time. We returned for a weekend break as it is most convenient for visiting Laycock and Bristol as well as the town of Chippenham. Once again we found the hotel to be an excellent place to stay and this time being the summer it was most relaxing to just sit in the rose garden and enjoy the flowers and calm surroundings The swimming pool is clean is a gem and only a short distance from the rooms in the newer part of the hotel. The breakfast menu has a wide variety to choose from and the service was very efficient with the food arriving hot. We ate a very delicious an evening meal in the restaurant although the desserts were a little overpriced for the type of dishes offered. We had a ground floor room with a window opening on to the garden as opposed to a first floor room last time. Ground floor rooms have the advantage of not having to carry cases upstairs and if you also have a garden view that is an added bonus

« It is OK .... just about! »

My arrival was not an auspicious start. I stood in reception for fifteen minutes while the only receptionist on duty was taking a very long and involved phone call. She didn't even have the courtesy to acknowledge my presence! Another guest was queueing behind me and in the end they went to the bar and asked for someone else to help. Eventually I was checked in and went to my room - which involved walking all the way back across the courtyard the way I had come in from the car park! Speaking of which, you need to register your car on a tablet in reception or you will get a parking ticket! My room was OK. It was on the third floor with a dormer window with very heavy curtains sort of draped onto a rail on the wall. It was not possible to fully close them because they had hooks hanging out at the rail end. There were many cracked tiles on the bathroom floor which didn't seem to be very clean around the edges. The bath, the basin and lavatory were all stained and looked like they could do with a darned good clean. The housekeeper obviously decided to either not replace or even wash used drinking glasses or else to wipe them out with a very dusty cloth. Likewise the coffee mugs. I do not think that this hotel ever actually replace these with clean ones because there is no lift so everything has to be carried up and there was no evidence of clean crockery when I did see the housekeeping staff. I made a point of manually washing everything before use. The shampoo, conditioner and lotion in the bathroom were only replaced once during a five night stay. A bit paltry if I may say so! I went for breakfast one morning at 7.00am (which is when they start although I would prefer it to be earlier). I helped myself to a juice and then sat and sat and sat. After being ignored for ten minutes I left without breakfast. I tried again the next day and was served. I asked for two rashers of crispy bacon and two fried eggs. I was given just one rasher and two eggs which were skidding around my plate in a sea of oil. Really, really greasy! Almost un-eatably so. I mopped the grease up with a paper napkin. I tried one last time and ordered again two rashers of crispy bacon and with two poached eggs this time. I again received only one rasher and two very under-done over-runny and very watery eggs. I can poach eggs better than that! My terms included breakfast but if I had paid almost £13 for it then I would have been very, very disappointed. The juice tasted watered down and the coffee (served in a cafetiere) was pretty awful and tasteless! The toast was fine. My advice is to book room only and grab breakfast at one of the many places just outside the front door! Considering the price of this hotel I think they could do better! The only really positive thing I can say is that it is convenient for the town centre.

    « Great hotel »

Stayed here for a couple nights when we visited longleat and other places. Very nice hotel, get in nice grounds and in a good part of chippenham with the high street/ pubs and restraunts within walking distance. We stayed in their Lowden suite which was very spacious and cosy, the room had a tv with freeview as well as a I pod/ iPhone docking station. We had a bed and brekfast package, and the breakfast was of a very high quality and served by friendly staff, we didn't use the bar or order any evening meals or room service as the menu did seem rather expensive. The hotel also has leisure facilities such as a pool which we didn't use in the end as you have to Pay extra to use and for the size of the pool, we didn't think it would be worth using . Overall this hotel deffently impressed us alot better than other hotels we stayed at previously and would deffently wouldn't rule out returning in the future.

    « One Night Stay »

This was the 2nd stop on our 15 day group tour of the UK. The hotel has a lovely décor and a tasteful old cottage feel. Very nice courtyard, lovely gardens and lounge areas. The room, however, was DUSTY, layers and layers of DUST. The carpet was old, dingy and dirty. It is apparent that the room had not been vacuumed/cleaned. There were toenails on the carpet and bugs by the window. There was a comment card in the room that I did fill out describing the dust and dirtiness of the room and I did give it to the front desk and personally spoke with the attendant. It was unbelievable the amount of dust/dirt in the room. Even the ventilator in the bathroom was caked up with dust. GROSS! The toilet was not flushing properly. I called the front desk and they sent someone right away (Florin). He was very nice and apologetic, but he said something about the toilet water wasn't "coming up", so he advised us to pump the toilet lever until the water came up, in order to flush. So every time we used the bathroom we had to "pump" the toilet until it flushed. What in the world?!?!?!?! I did not eat the dinner provided by the hotel for our group (I am a very picky eater and it's okay, I know this when travelling). Others in our party enjoyed dinner. Florin, again, was helpful in trying to find something that I could eat and was very apologetic, but I told him that it was okay. He seemed very willing to accommodate and sincere. Breakfast was your typical English breakfast.

    « Wiltshire Central »

Check-in was efficient and friendly and reception was well signed as the rooms are separated from the rest of the facility by a lovely courtyard. Our room was spacious with every amenity except air conditioning which seemed a bit unusual for a major chain hotel. The restaurant had marvelous food and a great steak special on Thursdays! The hotel is well suited for exploring the region with Bath only a half hour drive and numerous family history sites in close proximity. Numerous coffee shops are less than a block's distance and there is a fantastic Indian restaurant immediately across the square! I suspect the hotel has gone through a recent management change or had some turnover due to the end of the school year as the staff seemed just a little inexperienced with some minor errors in knowing their product and the restaurant staff wasn't quite up to speed when we showed up for the first sitting at 6:30 on our first night. Subsequent nights the service was flawless and, as mentioned before, the food was first rate!

« Good lunch, varied menu »

Had a light lunch here which was excellent - good meeting place too. Selection of sandwiches, salads etc. plus the usual pub type favourites, although this is definitely more of a hotel than a pub. Good service and reasonable price.

    « Good value »

We were visiting Chippenham for the first time and decided to have Saturday lunch here, what a good choice. The menu had plenty on it, the hotel is clean, plenty of room between tables, staff friendly, food hot, well presented and cooked well. Could not fault anything wish we were staying longer as we would return.

« Lunch time with the kids »

Popped to The Angel for a quick lunch with our 3 young children today. The staff were more than accommodating and went out of their way to make us feel comfortable and relaxed even though the place was busy. I have been before and remember loving their chutney, since it wasn't on the menu I asked if it was possible to make me a quick sandwich up and they happily obliged. We all thoroughly enjoyed our meals and left feeling very satisfied. The Angel is the perfect place for a quick lunch in town. Would recommend the sweet potato fries, they really were amazing!

    « Poor treatment »

Stayed 1 night with my partner. Requested ground floor room on booking. On arrival we were ignored at reception for some time while staff were dicuss in other matters. When we were finally greeted we were told that our room had been changed due to another guest needing ground floor without letting them know in advance. We were then given top floor with no lift. Offered a free drink at the bar but this was really inconvenient as my partner not able to cope with stairs easily. Room was very nice but only back of hotel veiew. Good town centre location. I went to breakfast alone and again was completely ignored fot at least 10 minutes. When I called waitress over she asked me to wait a moment and seated and took orders from several couples who arrived after me. Staff really do need better training.

« One night business trip »

We spent a comfortable night in an executive room, in the annexe overlooking the courtyard garden. The receptionist was very friendly and professional at check-in and our room was large with modern fittings. We didn't eat in the hotel as the restaurant was very quiet, but we walked in the wrong direction to find somewhere else to eat. We ended up at a very average Greek restaurant. There seemed to be more choices if you turn right from the hotel, rather than left. We also didn't eat breakfast as we were in a hurry. The swimming pool looked very small, but we didn't have time to use any of the leisure facilities, so can't comment on those.

Great service as always with very polite staff, this hotel is very clean and tidy we ate in the restaurant the food was cooked lovely and plentiful, can't wait to go back, we visit most Saturdays and now we can easily get a parking space

    « Great location »

We stayed for one night. Were first shown to the family room but the extra bed hadn't been made up. When queried we were then moved to the correct room; both were nice big rooms but the decor was a bit dated and under the bed was a large amount of stuff that whoever manoevres the vacuum had failed to pick up. The toilet wasn't sealed at the base and there was a visible yellow pee line. Sat in nice courtyard for drinks but the young chap in the bar was hopeless. His attitude was poor and he put lemonade in my spritzer. The female staff on reception were lovely. Breakfast was a good meal but the coffee was pretty dreadful. Instant would have been better. The menu looked a bit pricey and not very exciting so we went out to eat. Comfy bed and not overpriced for room.

    « Parking Fine Refunded! »

My OH and I frequently use The Angel for coffee when visiting town, and completely understood when they installed the parking cameras as the car park was a nightmare. However, I was upset to receive a letter saying we had not paid, and fining us £100 (reduced to £60 if paid within 14 days). We didn't have a receipt so thought we couldn't prove our purchase, and paid up. A couple of weeks later, I mentioned this to one of the wonderful staff, who went out of her way to find our receipt on the computer, and informed me I had made a mistake when entering my car registration. I then sent a letter to Parking Eye, along with the proof of purchase provided by The Angel, and received a complete refund - not even a reduction for 'administrative costs' which I had expected. Absolutely brilliant service from The Angel, who went out of their way to ensure that bona fide guests are not fined, but people who use the carpark for private reasons are. Thank you to the staff at The Angel who are unfailingly polite and helpful - and I have learned to always keep my receipt just in case.

    « good quality »

I took my sister in law for lunch. The Angel is a very old building with new extensions. Very clean and nicely laid out restaurant in keeping with the old building, nice atmosphere for a light lunch. The food was well prepared and fresh, most enjoyable. The staff were very attentive and when we mentioned that the coffee was weak we were served a fresh pot, of good strength with apologies . Would recommend for a tasty lunch.

    « Lovely Hotel »

Stopped here one night and had a room in the older part of the hotel which I am glad we did as the room was a very good size with windows on 3 sides so plenty of light and the bathroom was a good size too. Although there is no air con a very large efficient fan was left in the room which was very much needed and appreciated. The hotel is in a great position for everything Chippenham has to offer and there are plenty of bars and restaurants close by if you chose not to eat in the hotel. The breakfast service was good although the portion size and variety of the cooked breakfast was a little disappointing when compared to the other aspects of the hotel, having said that when I next visit the area I shall most certainly book here again.

    « Parking Fine »

I regularly meet business colleagues at The Angel due to its nice environment, especially of an evening. However, i have just received a £100 parking fine for the pleasure of a 2 hour meeting at 7:30 in the evening. I appreciate, having read Managements previous comments, why charging has been put in place, but why no obvious signage at the bar or any mention of this new system by staff when paying for drinks. Having rang the Hotel the lady I spoke to was very helpful and advised that she would look through the till receipts from the evening in question to locate and send me evidence that I was using the facilities at the time of the fine. But should this really be necessary when a simple mention of the new parking fines system by staff could save all this. Now I have to personally appeal (in writing) to the parking fine company and can but only hope that it will be cancelled, but who knows.

« The old well blended with the new. »

As best Western card holders we were upgraded to a large room with a four poster. It was very comfortable and clean..(perhaps the light coloured carpet would benefit from a shampoo..)The bathroom was modern and the toiletries and fluffy white towels were good. Several months ago I had asked for a single duvet and sheet and was very impressed to find them in the room. The staff were very welcoming and friendly and nothing was too much trouble. They booked a taxi for us and even rang to check it was on its way. We liked the garden space linking the old building with the new rooms and thought this had been well done.

« Good and bad experience »

I will keep it brief...overnight stay, my birthday. GOOD... Lexi on Reception, pleasant, helpful, courteous, ideal person for the job. Room, in the older part, top floor overlooking main square, no problems, nice large, clean room. Small but pleasant pool. Food, evening meal and breakfast very good. BAD... could not get any sleep until the party music coming from the bear hotel across the road had ceased at 2am, which frankly ruined the day, as we were already tired from a long drive, but were kept awake by the thumping bass and very noisy revellers outside. Hotel was full, so we couldn't even move rooms, so disappointing.

    1
    « Toilet »

I've previously visited the hotel with no problems with the room. On this occasion my 4 night say saw no correction of the toilet flushing problem. It would seem the staff do not have the competence to rectify the problem.

« Chippenham a delight this Hotel ideal »

Broke the journey to London with an overnight at the Angel using TA as a guide. Very surprised this hotel is 10 yrs plus old. Modern - lots of light - great layout with garden courtyard and a top class swimming pool and fitness room. Our room 305 was spacious well equipped with a bath. The only things that stopped this being a 5 pointer was the evening meal £16.25 for Fish & Chips / NO and it did not have a lift ( you haven't seen what my lady can pack for a weekend ) all I could do to load that case in the car. Overall highly recommended and the girls on Reception even found me a Pub showing the Lions match at 8am ( the Brunel ) - happy days

« Best Western Angel Plus Chippenham - Pretty poor on a number of fronts »

I am currently staying at the Best Western Angel Plus Chippenham hotel. I booked this mainly because it was a Best Western which I have always had good experiences with and also because this hotel is pet friendly. I don't expect Best Western to be 5 star but in general they are always clean and have good service. I am totally disappointed by my stay at this hotel. It is very rare that I write a poor review but in this instance one is warranted. On arrival we could not get any parking in the car park. It is very small and was totally full. I was told to park in a car park next door (down street). I asked if I had to pay for this and was told I did. This is an hourly charge with a max of two hours stay, so what was I to do with my car then? I stayed in the car until a space finally became available. Not a good start. I had two rooms booked, one for myself and my husband and the other for my mam. There is no elevator in the hotel. One room was on the top floor and the other on the ground. The ground floor room was taken by my elderly mam as she could not climb two long flights of stairs. My room was a nice size. The decor was modern and no issues with that. However I do have an issue with the cleanliness of the rooms. The toilet in the room doesn't look like it has seen a brush in years, probably since it was installed. It is grotty down in it, brown to be exact. The two cups provided were stained both inside and out. We were given one packet of biscuits every day for two people.....great for figure! We used the glasses provided in room every day, and every day after the room was cleaned we had to wash our own glasses as they were left dirty beside the bed. One day the towel provided was stained. Needless to say we threw that on the floor and shared the other towel between us. We made coffee in the room on the first day (after washing the cups well!) and the next day the sugar was not replenished, so tough if you need a second cup during your stay and take sugar, as there was none provided. The second day when we returned there was a long black hair hanging off the edge of the bath....not ours as we dont have long black hair! We were staying for 4 nights. On the second day we left the hotel at 10am and returned at 4pm to find the room was not cleaned, even though we hung the 'make up room' sign on the door. I rang housekeeping and they said they would clean it then. I had to go sit in reception for 30 mins with our pet while they cleaned it. Housekeeping said that the checkin guest rooms takes priority. But that night the carpark wasnt nearly full and I would say according to the number at breakfast the hotel was far from full, so not sure why our room was not prioritised. The second room although a better experience was still not cleaned well and hair was left in the bathroom from another guest. I complained to reception on the 3rd morning about the cleanliness of the room. All she said was 'did I mention it the day before', which I said I didn't, so she said she would mention it to housekeeping. Needless to say nothing much improved on day 3 apart from the glasses being washed for us ....thank you!. The toilet is still brown and grotty. Not sure if they cant afford a toilet brush! Surely there is a housekeeping manager that oversees the rooms to ensure the standard is maintained? Breakfast is OK, nothing amazing. Buffet is pretty poor/basic, just some cereals, no prunes or anything out of the norm. Hopefully you are not in a hurry though as it took 30-35 mins to get a fry served to us, by which time the toast was stone cold and the coffee to. They must have had to go to shop to get the contents before they could start cooking. They were not even busy. Just a few tables in use when we were there and several waitresses present, so no excuse for taking so long. The hotel is OK but very poor on a number of fronts. I wouldn't recommend it if you have a choice. We moved from Best Western Crudwell to this Best Western due to lack of availablilty for the remainder of our stay at the Crudwell Best Western. The Best Western Crudwell is much older hotel, but was a fantastic stay and the staff could not have done enough for you. They were truly amazing and have perfected the customer relations piece. Pity about the Chippenham Best Western. I am not sure how they got 'Angel' and 'Plus' status, but they need to work on their housekeeping and overall customer service. This is the first time I have stayed in a 'Plus' Best Western, so was truly disappointed. Even mentioning to reception that I was not happy didn't improve anything! Its like they just couldn't care less. On a positive they have free WIFI and it is not bad, but you have to connect every day. No big deal. They also have a small pool and gym, but I didn't use these. The other plus is that they are pet friendly which is great!

    « Excellent stay »

We telephoned the hotel and got a better deal than through internet companies. We stayed for one night, we arrived quite early but we're able to check in. Very pleased with the room and the setting was great over looking the pretty garden. Comfy bed, and well equipped bathroom. Didn't use the pool etc but looked ok. We had our dog with us and unlike some hotels were not charged for his stay. We had to sit out side for breakfast as we had our dog, which was fine and the staff were more than happy to serve us for tea and coffee, cooked breakfast etc. We were very impressed with everything and will certainly return.

« Should have stayed home for lunch! »

My husband took me out for lunch today as he knows how much I have usually enjoyed the plaice fillet. Well, not today, unfortunately. It was bland with a strange creamy colour. Usually, it's white with a fresh fish flavour. I did eat about half of it, but was concerned that it might be off, so I sent it back. The chef said, that it was alright, but it was just the way it was prepared. As I was still hungry I ordered the carrot & coriander soup to replace it, but was told as I had eaten half of the fish, I would have to pay for the soup as well. I would have expected as a gesture of courtesy and to ensure customer satisfaction, not to mention repeat business, that they might have offered me the soup free of charge. However, when the soup arrived I could not believe it as it was so unpalatable, i.e. hot and peppery, I was unable to eat it. I can't help thinking that the chef deliberately over-spiced it as I had complained about the fish tasting bland. It's such a shame as we have been lunching at the Angel for the last 14 years and always enjoyed the food and the service. Unless things change for the better, we will not be lunching here again and we will certainly not recommend it to our friends and family. Yours, sincerely disappointed and upset.

Stayed 3 nights. Booked late so expected basic room but pleasantly surprised. Room was large with adequate bathroom. All usual facilities. Room serviced, towels changed, hospitality tray and toiletries replenished daily. We were on ground floor facing courtyard which was busy but never noisy at night. Pool too small for a decent swim! Very conveniently located hotel. Staff very pleasant and helpful. Would definitely stay again.

    « Disappointing »

Stayed here 50 years ago, on honeymoon! Won't stay again though. Bedroom OK, but bathroom very tired, and grubby. Needed thorough deep clean. Reception not particularly welcoming either, not helped by its location. Did not eat here so can't comment further. Charged for breakfast although we did not have any. Included in price given on Booking.com. therefore "can't be changed" said receptionist. Customer service we experienced left a lot to be desired.

    « Disappointing »

Stayed here the 1 night and on arrival found the carpet in the bedroom wet from heavy rain that had come in through a window that had been left open. Towels were quickly brought to mop the window ledge and, not wanting to cause a fuss, we said that would be fine. The room was very cold and my wife rang reception to say we could not get the heating to come on in the bedroom. (I had been taken ill in the afternoon with a fever and had to return to the hotel) we were told as it was summertime the heating was turned off in the hotel. - 20th May and pouring down and cold outside. We were told a heater would be brought to the room and that they would try and get the heating on. This was done and the room began to warm up. We had room service in the evening as I was still not feeling well. The sandwiches were very fresh and the staff that delivered them were bright and courteous. The following morning I was feeling much better (heating came on) so we went down to breakfast. We stood in the breakfast room waiting to be seated, one of the staff saw us but did not acknowledge us or make any attempt to show us to a table. We ordered bacon, egg, hash brown and mushrooms off the full breakfast menu. This arrived, one slice of bacon, mushrooms that were definitely not grilled and not a very appetising looking plate. The food was obviously not freshly cooked and not hot. There reception staff were quite young with very little customer relation skills. They need more training in making guests feel welcome, a smile goes a long way! We paid £150 bed and breakfast which was extortionate for the quality of the hotel and the service provided. Will not be returning.

Double room in the new part of the hotel. Comfortable king size bed. Shower in bath needs upgrade. Two flights of stairs to get on 2nd floor, difficult for infirm, other rooms may be better suited. Food average, could improve by cooking vegetables longer, adequate portions. Chicken OK but undercooked. Fish was always the best choice. Staff excellent, very helpful and attentive.

    « EXCELLENT STOPOVER »

We travelled to Bournemouth for Christmas from the West Midlands and stopped over in Chippenham to visit friends. Spent the night in this superb hotel. The rooms were spacious, well equipped and spotless. Very comfortable bed. Staff were superb and the food was excellent. There's an excellent, peaceful courtyard to take a drink or have a read.

« Nice but could be better »

Stayed 1 night for a family reunion. Hotel appears to have been refurbished, and I must say, of all the competitor hotels in Chippenham this may be the best option in my opinion. The Angel is in a great location in the centre of town. Close to banks, shops, restaurants etc. as well as scenic Castle Combe. There is parking at the rear for paying guests and on check in you must enter your license plate on the keyboard. Security good. Check in staff friendly. We did arrive a little early and unfortunately our room was not ready. I had trouble getting on the internet and requested help from reception. They advised it is an ongoing problem but did offer for me to come back later to reception and they would call their provider to assist. I chose not to do this. Our room was quite large and in the older section of the hotel and on the 1st floor facing the main street and directly over the front exterior balcony. We had no issues with noise other than the front window was whistling a bit. The in room safe batteries had to be replaced but it was done quickly and efficiently so no major inconvenience. The bed and furnishings were good, linens good quality too. The hotel closes the front doors in the evening, maybe midnight, so if you need access you need to ring the bell and the night staff let you in. This was not a problem. There is a pool however we did not use it. It was visible from the corridor in the hotel so not very private. The breakfast was not good. It tasted like processed. The scrambled eggs were wet and did not taste like real eggs. The mushrooms tasted boiled rather than grilled. Not enjoyable at all. They did have cereal, pastries etc as well as juice, tea and coffee. Table service was extremely slow, Saturday morning, and I had to go look for a server to take our order. Other than that they were pleasant enough. I felt the price we paid was quite high for what we got, but given the competition, and perhaps the area, it was to be expected.

    « staying with friends »

Booked for 4 of us to stay here. We had two extremely large double rooms, with bed settees, so plenty of space for 4 friends. The rooms were the only two at the top of the stairs so felt that we had our own suite! B&B was £55 pp, and the breakfast was Excellent! A cooked breakfast, cooked to order, with tea/coffee/juice and pastries, cereals, fruit etc, buffet style. Excelent value, we felt, however, there was not much else to do in Chippenham! The pool was nice, a little small, but adequate for our needs. Lovely quiet rooms, would definitely recommend!

    « Great stay »

Lovely hotel in good location. Large comfortable and spotless bedroom. Pet friendly, allowing our dog to stay. Lots of restaurants and shops immediately next to hotel. Charming patio garden. Staff very friendly. Stayed to visit Badminton horse trials which was about 20 mins away.

« Good Hotel close to town centre. »

I was also part of the coach party spoken of in previous reviews. I found the Hotel room comfortable and roomy although it was very hot at night and the Windows could only open an inch or two as we were on the ground floor. It was very quiet which was surprising given the location of the Hotel and that our window faced the car park. The staff were very friendly and accommodating. The thing that let the whole weekend experience down was the quality of the food. I ended up having very little to eat over the weekend as the food was not good. I had the prawn cocktail on the first night and it had absolutely NO taste whatsoever. It was like eating water. They brought me some extra lemon to try and give it some flavour. This was followed by cold beef and cold Yorkshire puddings. I was served first at a table of six and had to sit for ages waiting for the others to be served and then for the vegetables to arrive. The beef was very tough and the meal was returned to the kitchen but the replacement meal was no better, still cold and on a cold plate. The next night I ordered the mackerel pate and the fish thinking that was the safest option. The pate arrived with two of the tiniest pieces of Melba toast, not enough to put the pate on, and the fish was again absolutely tasteless. I had ordered the fruit salad which promised to be fresh and all I got was a plate full of chopped apple. I think something really needs to be done when serving food to a table. Everyone should get their food at the same time and it should be hot. The staff were apologetic and did what they could to help but if the food is leaving the kitchen cold and tasteless then there is little they can do. The Hotel was very nice but the food let the weekend down. I spoke to other members of the party and many had the same experiences with the food.

« Pleasant Hotel but shame about the food »

I was one of the walking weekend group about whom there is already a review and I agree with everything said. Nice hotel, conveniently located and tastefully presented with pleasant and helpful staff. Bedroom was well furnished, clean and comfortable although as a twin room it seemed churlish to have only one packet of biscuits and one hot chocolate sachet. Wifi was good and the only downside was that noise was discernible from adjacent rooms and the outside corridor but didn't disturb our sleep. Bathroom adequate, and although it didn't really have an impact upon our stay there were many cracked floor tiles and the sink plug hole hadn't been cleaned properly for quite some time. Bar quite expensive, but then what hotel isn't these days? Food was similar to a couple of the other reviews already here. The rationale on the dinner for our big group was to deliver similar meals (we had pre-ordered) to each table and then other choices in turn, meaning some people had to wait a few minutes until all at the table were served and then a further wait for the vegetables. My roast was so cold, despite being on a hot plate, that after one mouthful I asked for it to be re-heated. A new plate was then supplied, but the food was again only luke warm and had been put on a cold plate and it again went back! The third attempt was successful, but by that time the vegetables were decidedly cool but I put up with it whilst my partner hardly eat anything at all. The whole table thought it a poor way of doing things. Of the food, the beef was very chewy and my starter of soup was sadly lacking of a tomato taste whilst the prawn cocktail delivered to my partner (and some of the others) was the most tasteless I have come across ( I tried it) and I am told the plaice dish was much the same. The fruit salad was 'fresh' but although there was the odd piece pineapple, orange and mango, the majority of it was apple and seemed a bit of a cheap way of doing it - perhaps I was unlucky in my serving, but I overheard another of the party asking for an apple free plate? Breakfast was quite good, although on the second morning we had to ask someone to take our order when despite having a reasonable number of waiters/waitresses they were all frantically clearing away tables. Once ordered the food was hot and quickly delivered. I suspect being in a large group in a separate dining room may have lead to the quality being suspect, but I feel sorry for any wedding party who suffered similarly. What is wrong with serving one table at a time so food is hot and everyone is able to start together? Perhaps the management need to attend to a few things, but I would go back if I needed accommodation in the area?

« Coach party for a walking weekend »

I arranged to take 52 ramblers here for our annual walking weekend, lovely hotel, very friendly staff, small indoor pool was very welcome on returning from a walk, this hotel is in a perfect spot for exploring the beautiful countryside, or visiting nearby Bath. Shops, bars & restaurants are all within walking distance.

    « stay in Chippenham »

The hotel and staff were very helpful and friendly. The only disapointment was the leisure facility where there is a fitness room and small pool however as there is lots of walking routes and historic sites I managed to see some sites and chill off in the pool. Overall and great place to stay.

« awards dinner at the angel »

Held our annual awards dinner here tonight. Great to have a private room. The staff were very helpful and attentive. The food was by and large great. Any small difficulty (one of our members was unhappy with his dessert) were swiftly rectified. Well done to Balint (duty manager) and the staff team. We will definitely return as a group next year and as individuals throughout the year

    « SUNDAY LUNCH »

Had Sunday lunch with my disabled sister. Starters was a rather tasteless carrot and butternut squash soup. Main course was meant to be topside of beef and vegetables....the beef was chewy...very poor and the vegetables were undercooked. The desert was, well you cannot get that wrong it was fair. I now find that I've have been issued with a parking fine for dining at their restaurant.

« Great four poster superior room »

We stayed here for two nights in Easter, we booked a superior four poster room. You can park on the carpark for free you just put your car registration into the iPad at the front desk which is very clear. On arrival the reception staff were very friendly and helpful. Our room was beautiful, we stayed in the Lacock suite, four poster bed, separate bathroom just down the steps from the main room by the door with a roll top bath, and separate shower cubicle, shower was a little luke warm but had a very hot bath on one of the evenings. We were informed prior to our stay that on the second morning there would be no hot water from 7am so we were given access to another room in the building to use the bathroom on that morning which was no problem and all sorted out in advance. The room had a separate living room area with sofa, flat screen TV, welcome tray, there was lots of furniture in keeping with the style of the property, huge wardrobe with an ironing board, safe etc and the huge four poster bed was very comfy. We didn't have breakfast on either morning as we go to Jolly's cafe round the corner and one on the High Street just down from the hotel. Good value for money for the four poster suite, weren't disturbed by anything during our stay and this is the second year in a row we have stayed here during our Easter visit to Chippenham.

    « Underwhelming »

If you are looking for a budget hotel for a one or two night stay and want to be close to Bath this hotel will probably suit your needs. Our room was in the newer part of the hotel with very uninspiring décor and furniture. The bathroom was desperately in need of a complete makeover and the shower was barely adequate. The bed however was large and comfortable. There was an outer door to the corridor where our room was which required a key. The door constantly banged every time someone used it and the occupants of the other rooms managed to bang their individual doors too. So well into the night and early in the morning we were constantly disturbed by the various doors. On the first morning for breakfast we had to move tables because orange juice had been spilt over the chair and the staff hadn't had time to clean it properly. Elements of the cooked breakfast were okay but the bacon was so undercooked it was not edible. On our second morning a male member of staff was very reluctant to take our breakfast order despite us asking twice. Chippenham is a market town but there is nothing really to see however we did find a very good pub called the Gladstone Arms where the staff were very welcoming and the food was excellent.

Shame about the rude staff. Unfriendly. Decent sized room, cold but luckily the heating worked. Bathroom clean. Close to shops (central) Didn't use the pool/gym but it looked okay. Didn't try any food due to some reviews.

« Very poor staff attitudes and very disappointing »

Arrived on Easter Sunday at about 700pm the receptionist did not automatically ask us if we want to eat but when I asked said we could just go in the restaurant as it was not busy.when we went in about 7.30 the man who greeted us was not happy we had been told just to come in and demanded to know who had told us we could.this was in spite of the fact the restaurant was nearly empty.when we sat down one of the other diners was returning food he was not happy with.this worried us but our food was ok.the staff were offhand however and my crumble arrived without the advertised icecream. This was delivered without a smile or an apology.when we returned to our room we were dismayed to find the tv would not work.the duty manager tried to fix it unsuccessfully.he was actually very nice and offered us another room.we did not really want to change so late and he said an adjustment would be made to our bill.when I attempted to run a bath after he had gone there was no hot water. We were very upset.i rang the receptionist again and she seemed to think it was funny and actually laughed.i asked to change room but she said she would contact the manager.she then rang back to say he was checking the boiler.we then heard nothing more.i checked the water about half an hour later and it was working.next morning the manager asked if the water was ok.he said he had found nothing wrong and assumed a lot of people were using it.he said he did not ring us because he thought we might be asleep .we accepted this and went in to breakfast.literally as soon as we were seated we were asked if we wanted coffee and toast.we were also asked to order hot food.when my wife politely said she needed time to choose the waitress was very annoyed and went off.she then returned and dumped the coffee and toast and turned to leave without taking our order and I had to call her back.by the time our hot food came the toast was cold and hard.the scrambled egg was completely inedible due to being drenched in salt we could not eat neither could our neighbour.the same manager was in the restaurant and I told him so they did not serve it to others.he did offer to get us something else.when we checked out I asked the sam receptionist who had been on the night before about the promised refund.she said refunds were not cash but she could offer us a free cup of tea. This was just after breakfast.looking at recent reviews other people have had similar problems with staff attitudes.i hope the general manager takes the appropriate measures to remind staff of the correct way to treat guests.this is a shame because the building and our room are nice.

    « Business Stay »

Only one night at the Angel, reception staff was very friendly and offered advice on local restaurants, I was looking to enjoy a late dinner at one of the local Indian restaurants, on reflection I should have taken her advice. The room and facilities were as expected, clean, comfortable and the gym was not busy when I used it 18:00 to 19:00, only one treadmill but it was free at that time, a couple of cycle and rowing machines and of course a pool. Staff at breakfast were welcoming and offered a varied breakfast, I opted for a couple of poach eggs done just as I liked them, a good selection of cereals, fruit, fruit juice and so forth, all in all a good start to the day. Would use again when in the area.

    « Unpleasant staff »

Arrived here for a business meeting, we found the senior staff rather unfriendly and had an attitude difficult to describe, I suppose the word would be arrogant, this didn't create a very good impression at all, the younger staff didn't smile or interact with customers, we as a group felt unwelcome , very disappointed.

  • 1
« Fair hotel, rude, arrogant staff »

The hotel is quite nice and fine by general standards and the majority of 'grown up' staff quite pleasant and accommodating (apart from the elderly night porter which I'll come onto shortly), but some of 'the children' employed here trully need training about how to interact with guests and not treat them with the disdain shown to myself and my colleagues during my recent four night stay. We had a group meal in the restaurant on our first evening together. The restaurant was otherwise empty but it took almost two hours to serve a group of eleven people two courses. The food overall however was fine. Due to the delays we pre-booked the next night in advance. Seven of us for 7.30 and two at 8.30. This really threw them! On arriving at 7.30 I asked the young waitress if the tables could be placed together as they had been the previous night. Again the restuarant was empty. She gave me such a dirty look and said "But you are all arriving at different times, how can we?" I advised her differently and she simply shrugged, turned her back on me and walked away. Disgusting service, we put the tables together ourselves helped by one of the male waiters who although quiet, was OK. When we did get seated we discovered there had been a mistake (theirs) about some of the orders and once again the young waitress treated us all with the utmost disrepect, like it was our fault and we should just put up with it. The food was also, on the whole, pretty hopeless. Cod in batter which was all batter and luke warm chips. Chicken and tarrogan which I had enjoyed the night before was a different dish and nowhere near as good. The fish pie contained mussels so should be labelled seafood pie and in one case was still cold in the middle. Soup with no bread, the list goes on. Awful. The young reception staff also look down their nose at you, I advised one that I would be leaving early the next morning and asked if there would there be someone at reception to check me out. Without even looking up she simply said, "the night porter". Customer service? What customer service. And as for the night porter: I duly arrived at the reception desk at just after 4.30am. The elderly night porter arrived and had obviously just woken up. I said hello, apologised for the early start but as I had a long journey I wanted to miss the traffic. He just ignored me. I stood and waited to check out and he said, "Room number?" He then wen't on to print off a sheet and advised me that I owed over £90.00. I advised him that the bill had been settled my my organisation to which he said OK, but he still needed to print off the receipt which he did so and asked me to sign. I asked why to which he replied, "Just sign it". Ignorant, rude and with no customer service skills at all I should have told him what to do with it! The room was comfortable, the room service staff cheerful and very polite, the other hotel staff could learn a lot from them. Otherwise, there is very little to recommend this hotel and I stay in a lot of hotels over the course of a year. Premier Inn staff are far more accommodating than the kids and night porter they employ at the Angel. Not recommended

Stayed here as we were visiting family nearby and were very pleased with this 3 star hotel. Room was large and overlooked the garden, was very quiet despite the very bad weather, car parking was no problem and staff were pleasant and helpful. One downside was the stairs to the room which needed to be cleaned more thoroughly. Will certainly stay here again

I was amazed by the comfy and cozy old fashion style at this hotell. Very english?? but when you see the garden early evening in the autumn with colored leafs and it's also the first thing you see when you go outside in the morning...it just gives you a good start for the day?? Very nice rooms with good size. Tub in the bathroom - perfect after a long day. Small conference rooms but it works great for a small group.

    « Trip to Bath »

This hotel was a great value alternative to the hotels in Bath. A quick walk to the train station and direct into Bath. Lots of nice places with Cotswolds on the door step near the hotel. Ate in the restaurant, the breakfasts were also good. Room was compact and quirky, but clean and nice. Staff were friendly and would stay again.

    « Great customer service »

We have stayed at this hotel three times, it is a lovely hotel, has a proper old English feel about it, with a foot in the 21st C. On our last stay, we booked the executive room, however sadly the radiators were not working, HOWEVER, the staff went above and beyond to ensure we were looked after. Offered us other rooms, sent up portable heaters, coffee and drinks, now although you are thinking, of course they should, but really could not do enough to ensure we were comfortable and enjoyed our stay and it was not too much trouble. Proves great customer service is worth it's weight!

« Surroundings very good, service in restaurant leaves a lot to be desired. »

This hotel on first view was very good, although we entered from the car park which is the rear of the property, very modern. We were a coach party of approximately 50 the majority being older people and in some cases lacking in full mobility. We were told to stay on the coach until a member of staff issued our room keys. We sat for approximately 20 mins before anyone came, even though they had prior warning of our estimated time of arrival. The rooms were clean quite spacious, complimentary toiletries and drinks facilities,i.e.t.bags, coffee etc., We were told where our evening meal would be, in a private side room at 7.00p.m. we were served with a three course meal which was very nice. Drinks at the bar were extortionate. On Saturday morning the breakfast was absolutely chaotic, the staff were slow, no-one appeared to be taking orders and when they did everything was served wrong. Drinks and toast was ordered and a full english, however the full english arrived way before the drinks and toast, some breakfasts on other tables were being placed on tables when people were still on cereals, so when people got to their cooked breakfasts were cold. A couple of tables asked 3 times where there food was and must have been waiting at least half an hour. Everyone was complaining. Our evening meal was served in the breakfast room and it turned out to be a complete debacle. Starters coming out the kitchen 4 at a time with huge gaps between each. Main courses coming out cold and people were eating them without vegetables even though repeatedly asking where they were. It was almost like a 'sketch' from 'Faulty towers' people were complaining all over the room. Breakfast was a repeat of Saturday chaotic. There seemed to be no management lead at any of these mealtimes and young staff trying their best although only 2 or 3 of them. It can only be described as chaotic debacles each time. I am afraid that only management can be to blame. Dis-organised management leadership is the only way I can describe this experience, I do know that our trip organiser did make a complaint on Saturday morning but no improvement, infact things got worse., The organiser was not offered any form of recompense.

« Has potential to be a nice hotel but certain things let it down. »

There are both positives and negatives to this hotel but unfortunately there are more negatives! I'll start with the positives. -Nice comfy bed -Good location and easy to park -Good price -Nice breakfast Negatives: -The bathroom wasn't clean. There were lots of little hairs in the bath and on the floor which definitely didn't belong to us. -We went swimming and the water in the pool was cold. The changing rooms were also really dirty and smelt bad so we ran up to our rooms to get changed instead. -We went to the hotel restaurant to see if we could book a table and they turned us away despite the dining area being completely empty. They couldn't accommodate us because there was a wedding on which was taking priority so we had to find a restaurant elsewhere. We weren't told about this when we booked the room. -To get from our room to the front of the hotel we had to walk through groups of wedding guests who were standing in the courtyard drinking and smoking. It felt like we were invading their wedding and they didn't look too impressed to see us either. Perhaps if we'd stayed another day it would have been better but I wouldn't recommend staying when there's a wedding on as if you're not a wedding guest you're not a priority to them.

« Great clean room with access to all the modern facilities »

Had a two night stay in a great room. Friendly staff and good variety for breakfast at a reasonable rate. Our room was massive and the sofa bed for the kids was not bad at all. Even with the sofa bed we still had 3 addition seats so we were very comfortable. Only negative was the room was a little cool and we could not get the radiator to come on.

The hotel was everthing you would expect. I called the hotel to make the reservation and informed them I wanted a twin room. this was not available and was given a family room with a sofa bed. This was not made up on my arrival although but a quick word and it was sorted. But unfortunately this was the most uncomfortable night sleep I have ever had and had.

    « Check your bill!!!!!!! »

First the good. Excellent food. Good clean rooms and 99% of the staff are wonderful. I have stayed here more than five times on business (not by choice) this year. On checking out on the previous visit my colleagues and I were asked to pay "over your budget" costs. We explained that on two nights we ate elsewhere and our budget was a rolling one so there was no chance of us exceeding the limit. The receptionist was adamant we had to pay so we did. On inspection bottles of wine and dinner were placed on our account falsely. We received reimbursement on our next visit, however this time we ate solely at the wonderful Wetherspoons one hundred metres away and a quarter of the cost. Yet again on checking out I was told I was over budget, in a fraternising and sarcastic manner. I queried this impossible anomaly and pointed out two times twelve is twenty four, not thirty seven. I was handed my money back with another sarcastic comment. Check your bill.....ESPECIALLY if you are on expenses. You may get a shock.

    « Great »

Having stayed here twice in the last year, its difficult to find any faults with this hotel, the service is good, the restaurant is excellent, for breakfast and Lunch. And ground floor bedrooms available for disabled persons like myself.Well done. Indoor swimming pool available for use by guests.

    « Great location.....but that's about it. »

Not much a business traveler really needs; ease of parking, solid internet access, comfy bed, good bathroom facilities and Sky Sports. Well at least the bed was comfy. Parking is a joke. A Town Centre hotel with no controls over its car park? Multiple times I returned and there were no spaces and in fact, cars were abandoned pretty much anywhere. Shoppers, hikers and office workers all seem to be drawn to the free parking. Tough luck hotel residents. The internet was fast, but, it dropped every 20 minutes consistently. Whether this is intentional to prevent streaming I don't know, but it made working there impossible with VPN and other services that need 'constant on' bombing out. It's a hotel of 2 halves. The new rooms in the stable blocks and the old rooms in the main building. Unfortunately I was in an old room. There was virtually no water pressure at all. The cold taps were a trickle and the toilet could only be flushed (literally) once every 10 minutes. At least I could relax and watch football....Nope. The advertised Sky Sports was not available. Couple of other items: If you want a quiet night, do not have a room at the front of the hotel. The noise from the Live Bands in the pub next door is not conducive to sleeping; in general the high street is a noisy place until well after midnight. The bar has shoddy service; often long waits for anyone to appear and then indifferent bar staff serving vastly over priced drinks. I completed the hotels feedback card "Moment of Truth" after my first night but got zero response from the Management. Unfortunately there is very little choice of hotels in Chippenham so on my next trip I will be forced to choose between a longer commute or the 1970's B&B that is the Angel.

    « Nice friendly hotel »

Stayed one night. Staff exceptional, but did not eat there. The room that we had selected, two adults and a child (but no child with us) was excellent. Bed was a super king and v comfortable. You could nit pick in terms of grouting around the shower, bath plug off lead or signs of condensation on windows BUT do not let that deter you. Central area wonderful with the trees and as a smoker that was ideal. Bar service excellent especially as we wanted to 'go off piste' at about 2230 in terms of a food requirement. Will stay again.

    « Excellent - a pleasant suprise. »

I am not a fan of Best Western due to past experience but this hotel was excellent from the extremely friendly and welcoming receptionist to the large room itself. There was a wedding reception on which I no way disturbed us. Our room was large and pleasant and the bed extremely comfortable. The bathroom was fine.( the grouting could do with a refurb) .

    « GOOD »

Good hotel with a nice feel to it. Courtyard area is very nice. Bar area is good. Breakfast is part buffet for cereal/fruit etc and table service for full English. Room was fine but bathrooms are looking a bit dated. Plenty of car parking even when it was busy. My only criticism is that breakfast on a Sunday finishes at 10am !! this to me is far too early. Good friendly staff and reasonable value for money. The hotel has a pool but this is rather small and best suited for just a dip.

« Great Lunch and Nice Hotel »

My Mother, Nanny and I went to the Best Western Plus, Angel Hotel for Lunch roughly a week ago on a sunny day. My Nanny is in a wheel chair and from two disabled spaces to the restaurant was considerably flat apart from a couple of reverse bumps and in the car park is a ramp going into the foyer of the pool area. You pass straight through the pool area which is still outside but undercover and . The accessibility, we managed to get to the Restaurant/Bar in a minute or so from the car park, just be careful with the paving stones on the way because its easy to get the wheels of wheel chairs caught if they are thin. Other than that, expect very straight forward entries and exits. Now onto the food. My Mother had been before and said that they do a very large portion sizes for their sandwiches for the price. After ordering from a nice array of sandwiches, I had ordered one of my favourite sandwiches which was Egg and Mayo which was very tasty. Boy was it big though, lovely stuffed sandwiches in lovely granary bread with a handful of crisps with some salad. I do not have a picture but I can say it was fantastic and the price was something to laugh about for how good it was. The service was very good and the starter was prompt, so was the main course as well. I would definitely recommend this hotel for a light lunch. Great prices, nice area and also very close to shops as well which is right next door to the hotel.

« Excellent for a Cycling Short Break »

I organised a short break for a group of 18 cyclists at the end of September and we used the Angel Hotel as our base for rides out into the surrounding countryside. From the time when I made the initial enquiry to the hotel I found them to be well organised and very helpful. And throughout the four day period of our visit the hotel proved to be an ideal place to stay. Rooms were a good size and comfortable, we were provided with a room to store our cycles safely and - most important to cyclists - breakfasts and dinners were of a good standard. I'd have no hesitation in recommending this hotel.

    « Nice »

Stayed on Saturday evening as we were at a party, the entrance and courtyard are lovely, really nice and well kept. Our room was huge and clean and the bed massive and very comfy, the only gripes are the coffee mugs in the room were dirty with stains inside and lipstick on the outside and the shower curtain needs replacing. Breakfast was included in our package. It was ok but they charge £12 for a full English that is way way to expensive for what you get, but all in all a nice place.

« Great place to stay »

Set into an old coaching in, the hotel rooms appear to be mostly in the old Stable block and ancillary buildings, ensuring a nice quiet night. The gym is small but offers a good range of exercises. The cooked breakfast is nice, but the staff can be a bit hit and miss at breakfast. The hotel offers excellent meeting facilities and look after you very well. I am looking forward to my next stay.

    « Angel Hotel - Angelic! »

The Angel Hotel, in the heart of 500-year-old (at least) Chippenham, is the quintessential English Hotel. Enter into the parole with 2 fireplaces, have a cup of tea or a meal right in the parlor, or be sure to get a room facing the courtyard. That courtyard, with its shady spots and fragrant flowers, is a place of lasting peace. My room, facing the courtyard, was roomy, comfortable, spotless, and larger than any rooms I experienced in the rest of my trip. The young women behind the reception desk, Lexi and Marie, were wonderfully friendly and helpful. The restaurant breakfast wand other meals were hearty, delicious, and in a lovely setting. We used the slightly heated pool every evening after out walks and trips, - be sure to ask for a pool towel at the front desk. I definitely recommend the Angel. Our group of 5 Americans - sisters, cousins, husband, nephew, - all enjoyed the total experience. Thank you, Staff at The Angel - you couldn't have done a better or more thorough job.

    « Pleasant small-city hotel »

Booked here last minute for a recent wedding but I have visited the hotel many times for company training events. The setting is town centre but once inside there is a quiet courtyard area and rear access to free car park for guests. The room was clean, tidy and functional but I have to say that the mattress on my bed could have used a change. It felt like it had collapsed slightly and would have been quite unsuitable had I not been quite inebriated after the wedding. Breakfast was good quality (and entirely necessary with a hangover) Staff friendly. Prices every so slightly more that I would expect to pay for similar quality and setting but for two it was within budget. Would be my first choice if staying in the area again.

« Great Location, High STandard »

Especially well located for visiting Chippenham and Wiltshire generally, with easy access to the M4 and convenient train and coach links. Hotel always achieves a high standard, with comfortably appointed rooms and friendly staff.

« Excellent value in a pretty town »

The Angel is a traditional English hotel, in an old building in a very pretty historic town. The location is excellent - dead central, quiet (thanks to a pedestrianisation scheme) and in easy walking distance from the station of you are travelling by train. Value for money was quite outstanding and the staff friendly and welcoming.

« Great Value, Good Location Nice Hotel »

I could not fault this hotel, it is in a great central location. The hotel itself is nice and the rooms were a good size with comfy beds and quiet. The hotel offer free wifi and parking, and the breakfast was nice. All for a great price.

« Prefect, couldn't had wished for a better stay! »

I had a perfect stay in the Superior Four Poster room 25-26 Sept, it had a lovely roll top bath and separate shower in the en-suite bathroom just as described on the web site, the large bed was most comfortable with crisp clean linen, I had evening meal that was nicely presented and very tasty there was also a good selection for breakfast the next day All the staff provided excellent service and were very polite courteous and helpful at all times, especially Lexi who was most helpful at the reception desk, I enjoyed my stay so much I would most defiantly like to return again in the near future.

    « "OVERDUE AN OVERHAUL" »

Visited this Hotel a number of times over the last few years, but now it really needs a major overhaul. The older part, the Biddestone suite, the smell on the way to room upstairs is terrible and also in the room, it smells dinghy and old. The carpet in the room has stains all over it and the shower didn't work very well and it was cold. The location is great, but for the price you pay, it's not worth it.

« Acceptable but dated rooms »

Having stayed here on business I have mixed opinions. The staff were all lovely and gave good service. The bar area was well maintained and the cooked breakfast was cooked to order rather than a buffet that I tend to find. Although day 2 I had 2 slices of toast and a filter coffee for a mere £6, a bargain (sarcasm of course!!!). The room though let's it down. In a newer part of the building the furniture and general feel of the room was very 1990's, and further they made the unforgivable mistake of still having a shower curtain over the bath as opposed to a screen. From a hygiene perspective this is a big no-no for me. There was a dark stain on it which made the thought of it clinging to me even worse. I'm short, ok for a business stay, I wouldn't look it up for a leisure break!!

OK hotel, nothing special, if at half the price paid it would be value, somewhat shabby, the breakfast down at the local Wetherspoons is better for less than half the price. Overall very disappointing

« Nice hotel with good facilities »

My wife and I stayed at this hotel last weekend in connection with a wedding in the locality. The room was fine, parking area at rear of hotel adequate. Access at front of building restricted as area pedestrianised. Breakfast was fine even if service was a bit haphazard. Suggest ask for room in new area near car park as revellers can be heard in older rooms.

« Harry Potter location trip »

My partner and I are big potter fans and on a spare of the moment decided to go up to lacock to visit the abbey and look up some of the filming locations, we have stayed at a few best westerns in the past they provide good locations for good value. The Angel has nice location not far from lacock and has good facility's for the price the pool is small but enjoyable for a float about and the gym again is small but has everything for a good work out would deffo recommend to any couples , we had a upper tier suit that was lovely. Would deffo go back if we where in the area

« A Very Average Best Western Plus »

I am a fan of Best Western hotels but this one is not so good. Firstly parking is a nightmare. People shopping appear to use the car park so little room for paying guests! Layout of the hotel is strange; you have to walk through the new part of the hotel and the courtyard to reach an unmarked reception area. I was told I was not entitled to any points( I am a platinum card holder) as I had not booked directly with the hotel! Shame as I booked and paid for 3 rooms for 2 nights. Room was ok . Clean and comfortable with everything in working order. No upgrade was available. Bar was pretty grim. No atmosphere and more like a cafe area. The restaurant looked uninviting so we ate out for dinner. Breakfast uninspiring. Poor selection on the buffet and cooked order arrived before our toast and coffee and before we had finished eating our fruit and yoghurt. Hot food just dumped on the table! Did not use leisure facilities. Some staff were nice and friendly whilst others obviously hated their job and let it show. Good location for a hotel but not sure I would stay again.

    « Ok Stay »

The hotel seemed lovely - a great courtyard, the restaurant seemed spacious and clean and the leisure facilities were good! The staff at the reception and in the restaurant were lovely - all very attentive and friendly, they couldn't do more for you. However, it wasn't all great: The layout of the hotel is random, you have to walk through the whole hotel passing rooms and the courtyard to get to the unmarked reception after parking your car - it doesn't flow very well. The bed flat sheets are we're too small for the beds and consequently I found myself sleeping on an uncovered mattress when waking in the middle of the night - not the most hygienic. The cleaning staff were not great, we had dirty cups and spoons in our room when we arrived and our friends had a dirty pillow case on the floor when they entered their room. Whilst the cooked breakfast was really great they weren't consistent with the quantities, on the first morning we had two hash browns, and on the second morning only one - I love hash browns so was a little disappointed!! The continental breakfast is definitely not worth the cost - cereal, limited fruit and not great pastries for £8.50 - no thank you! I wouldn't rush back here personally, however if you need a hotel that is in the centre of Chippenham it is an option that should be considered.

    « Weekend break »

Stayed Sunday night (11th sept)..wierd config at hotel re parking at back and walking through annex/courtyard (modern glass) into old part and front desk...confusing! Booked as diamond member and dissapointed with upgrade as room although big did not resemble those on line! Was nit told b/fast times or offered paper and receptionist didn't know how to deal with our points voucher yet told us she had been there 6,months...need to train poor woman better? Room was mismatch if of and new but clean. Sofa faced mirror but not TV?? Window seats were not clean especially the one in bathroom and dripping shower head all night. Didn't eat there sadly due to reviews but staff lovely at bar but only lounge area open. Paper ordered for 7 but didn't arrive! Fantastic location and many good pubs and restaurants including amazing Thai around the corner. Very disillusioned by best western standards and especially questioning the reward scheme within the market!

« Inept service with unappetising food »

Our friends took us here after having excellent food in the past. I'm sorry to say that they were embarrassed by the quality of food and the poor service we experienced. The only thing that I felt was worthy of a good comment was the selection of vegetables which were pleasantly al dente. Lamb loin chop was tough, unappetising and tasteless, the saute rosemary potatoes were left over new potatoes cut in half and slightly browned - no flavour of rosemary, no delicious crunch on the outside and no discernible flavour, add very bland gravy and you have a very uninspiring plate of food. My friend's gluten-free lamb was swimming in red wine which somebody appeared to have forgotten to reduce. The cheeseboard was cheddar, apple smoked cheddar and brie with celery, we might have had chutney had they not run out and my coeliac friend could not have had it anyway as it contained gluten despite being on the gluten-free menu. The male waiter came to take our food order then forgot to come back for our wine order, the trainee waitress must have started that evening without any prior training at all as she quite simply wasn't up to the job 'we'd like the Plate 35 Chilean Merlot please' 'Which number is that?' 'The Chilean merlot' 'yes, but what number is that, is it number 31?' Altogether a very unsatisfactory experience, they didn't charge for the lamb and one of the cheese platters, but, let's be honest here, we went out to eat expecting to pay for the food we ate not thinking we would be given it for nothing because it wasn't up to standard.

« Where do we start.... »

From the moment we walked in the front door the reception wasn't even clearly marked, once we did find it we were greeted with a young lady full of a cold who really did not want to be at work that day. She asked if we would like a newspaper each morning we said - that would be nice, for the next 2 days we never received one at all. Once we arrived into our room we found it to be very tired, with stained, dirty carpet. The bathroom certainly needed updating with broken floor tiles. The walls were so thin we could hear the people walking next door, opening drawers and snoring through the night. Certainly nothing up the standards of the reviews that we had read before we had arrived. The service in the restaurant was dismal, we would not recommend it. Sorry to write such a bad review but we think that people should know that this is not the best hotel and need to spend their $$ on a better alternative.

    « Good location »

Stayed here as part of a group. The hotel front section is a 17th century coaching inn, with a lovely flower filled courtyard leading to a new building, where I stayed. I was on the third floor and there is no lift, but staff helped with my bag. Breakfast is basic but ok. Ate at the restaurant three nights and it was also ok. The room was large. But there is no air conditioning and bed cover is a duvet so I had windows opened and fan on all the time and it was still hot. I should have asked for a sheet. Bathroom had a shower over the bath, and the pressure was very low. Wifi is free and works well. Again though, no power points near the bed which is a shame.

    « August BH weekend »

Lovely quiet room overlooking rear car park. Bathroom could do with some TLC but adequate for 1 night stay. Service in breakfast room was slow and inefficient half hour wait then all breakfasts, tea, coffee & toast came at once. Normally you are served your beverages whilst you wait for breakfast. We then asked for more toast by this time we were one of the last table still eating, after another 20 plus minutes wait we gave up!! Could do better... Cpould do better

    « Would fully recommend »

I must admit that at first I was a little lost, we parked in the car park went through what we thought was the lobby only to see it was part of the new building including the swimming pool. I had to ask a kind man where the Reception was and he told me to walk through the lovely garden though an old door and I would see the desk. I personally think that larger signage is required as the garden is like a enclosed beer garden with a winding path leading to the small door of the main hotel. The receptionist was really friendly and welcoming, and instructions to our accommodation were very clear (though the garden) but very, very clean and quiet. The only downside was that we decided have some lunch and ordered some sandwiches which took nearly an hour to come! The restaurant only had a few people in it and so we could not see the hold-up so we asked where our lunch was. They soon arrived. On the flip side, in the morning we sat down for breakfast and literally and I mean literally before I had even sat down I was asked for my order! I scrambled for my glasses and grabbed for the menu. I was so flustered that I ordered the full breakfast with poached egg instead of fried. The egg was not cooked at all! The sausage looked aneamic. And literally before I had even ordered the breakfast it soon arrived on the table (maybe that's why my egg was so under cooked!). Plus, I didn't even get to eat my bran thinking that my breakfast was going to take ages because of our experience with the lunch the day before!

    « Courtyard Gem!! »

I'v lived in Chippenham for more years than I care to mention and have been in the Angel loads of times, however I had never realised, until today, what a fabulous courtyard area they have where there are lovely tree shaded areas, lots of tables and chairs, a lovely peaceful space to have a drink or a meal in the sunshine. You order at the bar and then your order is brought to your table. The staff were really friendly and efficient and the food was well presented and lovely and fresh. It is a hotel so prices are a bit higher than the equivalent meals in a pub, but the surroundings made the bit extra worth every penny. If you want to eat inside there are several areas as well as the restaurant, all very nice.

« Good stay for what it is »

I stayed here whilst coming to Chippenham for a Freinds wedding and for what it is, The angel is a good hotel. I wasn't expecting 5* luxury. The room was clean and comfortable, the breakfast was ample (if a little on the pricey side) and tasty. I also used the Gym facilities there. Nothing special but is good for a small workout

    3
« food not good enough for the price you pay »

Rooms here are fine and the hotel staff friendly but the restraint needs to be better to justify the cost of the food and the aspiration of the hotel. Location in central Chippenham is good if you want to be in central Chippenham but traffic is pain in the morning if you are trying to get somewhere else.

    « Don't bother »

I was disappointed with this hotel after reading the reviews. We arrived and had to wait nearly an hour after check in time for our room to be ready. This was a room in the main hotel not the new part. Once in the room it was like an oven! The window barely opened and they had provided a stand up fan which was extremely noisy but had to be kept on to try and cool the room down. I have never slept in a room that was as hot as this ever.. The water pressure was also terrible and the shower could hardly rinse my hair properly. Dinner was also a disappointment. We had booked to eat in the hotel but should have found somewhere else to go. It was like eating a poor quality pub meal. Over cooked oven chips and undercooked steak which was tough. The only nice point of the hotel was the courtyard garden at the rear. I also left my glasses there and after ringing them once we'd got home were told that housekeeping didn't find them. Wouldn't stay there again.

    « Another good stay »

Visiting friends in the area for a couple of days, I booked into the Angel again. I found a good pre-paid deal online for a single room. On arrival I found the room lacked decent ventilation for a humid day, and a quick word saw me transferred to another without fuss. The location is great and the staff always friendly. Will definitely return.

« Excellent location, good food. »

I travelled to this hotel with our local National Trust Group for a 4 night stay. I was allocated a room in the main hotel but unfortunately the following morning I had problems with the shower. The staff were extremely helpful and offered another room for me to shower in and then moved me into another room whilst we were out for the day. My new room was in the "new build" section of the hotel and was clean and extremely comfortable. Our group had our evening meal in a private function room and whilst the service was a little slow on one of the evenings I found the food to be excellent with good choices. I just wish more rooms were provided with a separate shower cubicle, as due to a previous ankle injury I find it difficult to climb in and out of a bath. There is a lovely garden/patio area which joins the old and the new parts of the hotel but you do have to walk outside for a short distance....not too good when it's raining! All in all I thoroughly enjoyed my time at this hotel and would like to thank the staff for their friendliness and efficiency.

    « Good location, comfortable »

An overnight stop for a family occasion. Moved from our original room in the new part as there was a barking dog next door. New room was in the old part, and was much better. Lots of character. Met family for evening meal, that was very nice. Service good, food excellent. Breakfast the following day was great as well, set me up for the day.

    « Quite good »

Upon arrival, one hour after the check in time our room was still being cleaned. We were checked in but when we got to the room the cleaners were still busy. They were very rude, and told us to come back 15 minutes later. Felt unwelcome, like we intruded in their space. Once we were able to go into the room, it was clean. Bed was comfortable, bathroom clean. Carpets were dirty. Double glazed windows, but could hear a bit of noise from the outside but not bad at all. Breakfast very expensive, drinks reasonable. Will stay here again.

« Nice Hotel, centrally located. Food disappointing. »

We stayed for a two night break which included 2 breakfasts and one dinner. The hotel is right on the Market Place and has a very cleverly built extension at the rear which provides a lovely courtyard/sitting area, additional accommodation and a good sized car park. We are 'sheets and blankets' people and always ask for them instead of duvets if possible and nine times out of ten, our request gets lost somewhere along the way and we have to ask housekeeping to come and put things right. However, not The Angel Hotel. We were delighted as it saves so much hassle if they get it right first time. Well done to housekeeping and as a result we slept really well in our room which was both spacious and well furnished. We had our meal in the dining room. The service was excellent but we thought the food was rather average. My steak was very chewy and the chips were soggy. The promised field mushroom was replaced with a few button mushrooms scattered on the plate. The batter on my husband's fish was lacking crispness and the fish was quite small. Presentation was very basic. I suggest they invest in better quality frozen chips or do their own 'twice fried' chips and maybe serve them in some little individual chip baskets so that the chips stay crisp and the whole presentation is improved. A little imagination from the head chef is desperately needed. I ordered rhubarb & ginger sponge for afters but it was not available and my husband's fresh fruit salad was, again, very basic. No berry fruits at all, not even a strawberry or raspberry (now in season) among the usual apple, pear, kiwi and orange. Very dull indeed. Unfortunately the food offer was no better the next day at breakfast. Having said that, there was a good selection of cereals and bits and pieces to go on top, dried fruits, nuts etc. which were fine plus a basic selection of whole fruit, apples mainly and one banana which I grabbed. There was then a choice of the usual cooked breakfast with a choice of eggs. My husband chose a poached egg which, when it arrived was so overcooked it was solid and inedible. I had the buffet and I have never seen such a tiny offering of cheeses and meats, never mind the bread offer which consisted of cold dry croissants, just out of the packet I imagine, some anaemic looking rolls that looked like the cheap long-life ones that need to be baked off, except they didn't look as if they had been, and one, yes one, tiny Danish pastry, similarly pale and looking rather sad. I have a personal hatred of foil butter portions and plastic jam portions, which I suspect come straight from the cash and carry. Why they can't offer better quality jam and butter, I just don't understand. We go to hotels a lot for short breaks now that we are retired and we look forward to a lovely selection for breakfast (the best part of the stay in my opinion), so breakfast for us was a real let-down at The Angel and, we both thought, one of the least impressive that we have had in many a year. This is a lovely hotel that needs to get its act together regarding the quality and presentation of their food which is really letting the hotel down.

    « A comfortable one nights stay »

We stayed here one night as we were attending a family event close by. Upon arrival we had a couple of issues - firstly they had put us on the ground floor next to the wedding reception which was due to end around midnight, this was not ideal as we were travelling with a 5 year old. In addition, we wanted a king bed with an extra bed however we were given twin beds (this error may have been the fault of my partner as he may have booked wrongly). Nonetheless when we raised the issues with a reception we were quickly moved to a different room on the opposite side of the hotel, well away from the noise. This room was actually much larger and nicer than the initial room so we were very happy with this resolution. We then faced an issue as the faulty iron burnt my partner's shirt which meant we had to rush out and buy a new one. The Duty Manager that evening was accommodating, if not particularly friendly ,and offered to clean it for us. We spoke to him upon check out and he said that laundry was closed on a Sunday so we should follow up in a few days - which we then did by sending an email. We then dealt with the General Manager and we have nothing but praise for his professional and friendly emails and timely follow up....unfortunately the burn could not be removed however they promptly bought a new shirt online and had it delivered to our house. If we were in the area for any reason we would stay here again. The staff, though not always good at hiding their emotions, are accommodating and professional. The facilities are as you would expect and breakfast had a good selection and saw us set for the long drive home.

« Quirky, interesting and well worth a visit »

Had a one night stay here recently whilst attending an event locally. The only real negative came on arrival where the small reception was seriously under staffed. One receptionist checking in 8 people thus a lot of frustration. Other than that a really good stay. room was spacious [once we maneuvered lots and lots of stairs] and well equipped. The bath tub was huge and very welcoming! The swimming pool was superb and the general ambiance friendly. A good hotel and a convenient location

    3
    « Reliably comfortable »

A good base in the centre of Chippenham with parking on-site - ideal for exploring the area. It has a range of comfortable bedrooms - rooms of varying styles in the old and new parts of the hotel. Staff have always been helpful in sorting out any problems.

« The coffee was fine »

The room was lovely in the old part of the hotel. A boutique room up several small stairs. Old, quirky but very well cared for. Breakfast we prepaid for was a disappointing offering. Continental breakfast can be really satisfying. But pale undercooked white bread rolls with a few small, yesterday's Danish, or packet cereals of all sorts, meet you as you ponder which tinned fruit to pick with your low fat low quality yogurt! Oh but you can have white or granary toast. Alternatively one can pay an extra £12 for a full English. Really? Here was a hotel offering very good accommodation but expects the guest to think that a low grade breakfast suffices. Come on Angel, give your guests a choice of difference. Premier, ibis and other budget hotels offer better quality breakfasts than you. Give your guests fresh fruit choices, artisan breads and pastries, sausages, egg and bacon from local producers. Maybe even a choice of eggs Benedict or scrambled eggs and a little smoked salmon. Yogurts that are local, or at least tasty. Even decent jams and marmalade would have been nice instead of cheaply produced high sugar options that are tasteless. Match the lovely hotel with a lovely breakfast. Be different to and special enough from the budget hotels. You are very different! Hmmmm, the coffee was fine though.

    « Food gone downhill! »

I have been eating at The Angel for years. Usually go weekly to 2 weekly. Only eat here as my friend wishes to go here. Cannot say the food has ever been amazing, chips seem reheated, can learn a huge lesson from The Gladstone there. There has been a gradual decline in the quality of cooking, the quiche I have was amazing at the start but now tends to be a soggy mess with undercooked pastry. I have also had undercooked chicken and cold fish there. They have always been ok with regards to changing the meal or reheating but you never feel they accept responsibility. I have to say, having cooked in a pub myself many years back, that how a trained chef can produce such poor meals is shocking. Most of the staff are very nice although some in a managerial position leave a lot to be desired with their people skills. We did notice portion control had dramatically been reduced too with the slice of quiche being under half the usual. New owners have put this in place! So obviously money before customer satisfaction. Overall sad really, you expect so much more from what I consider should be a smart establishment, unfortunately the facade does not reflect the quality inside. I think I shall have to persuade my friend to go to The Gladstone with me instead, the owner is warm and welcoming and will bend over backwards to please and the food is simply awesome. I wouldn't want to spend my hard earned money here! Serious lessons to be learned Angel!

« Pleasant Stay With a Few Noise Problems »

We stayed here for four nights in the main, older part of the hotel in the Bromham Room (no room number). Your GPS might lead you to the front part of the hotel, but that is for taxis and drop-off only. There is a car-free plaza right in front of the hotel so the parking lot is actually in the back part of the property, near the newer section of the hotel. Adequate amount of parking space, except for when an event was held in one of the hotel's meeting rooms on one of the nights. In order to get to the reception desk from the parking lot, you walk through the newer building (where gym and pool are), out the back door into a lovely courtyard with trees, flowers, and some tables, then back into the older part of the complex and head down a hallway towards the front. The small, metallic, modern reception desk, as another reviewer stated, is really odd and out of place with the old-time charm and decor of the hotel. At first we weren't even sure that was where we checked in. There is a pleasant, comfortable seating area with wonderful decor just inside the front door near the plaza. You can have drinks and snacks in here, too. We headed up to our room, carrying our somewhat heavy suitcases up the stairs (no elevator). A little quirky to get to our room: we went through another narrow passageway that had a few steps, and then opened a few doors to get to our room. We did enjoy our very spacious, clean room with a four-poster bed (with a bench at the foot of it), fireplace, huge closet, large desk and chair, dresser with flat screen tv on it, two bedside tables, a tall standing fan, and lounge chair with footstool. There were also two windows in the room, with little alcoves that held seat cushions. Lovely atmosphere all around! The bathroom was quite large, also, and had a window with a cushioned seat bench underneath it. Long counter area above the sink and toilet area to store personal items. The tub had a shower, which worked just fine. We ate breakfast and dinner in the restaurant. Staff was pleasant and capable at all meals. Breakfast was buffet, with not a lot of selection, but it was adequate. You could also order additional hot items from the server, too. The dinner menu offered some really delicious food and we enjoyed all of it. Our only problem was noise, which bothered us two out of the four nights (weekend nights) due to our room's location. The hotel is located next to a bar and the revelers were out shouting and partying on the plaza until the wee hours of the morning. In addition, a wedding party was drinking and screaming in the courtyard for several hours--we complained the next morning to the receptionist who said the hotel was aware of that problem and would handle the situation. We chose this hotel because of its close location to Bath--perhaps a 20 minute drive--and also because of the good reviews and adequate parking. If we stayed here again, we would probably ask for a room away from the street noise.

« Angles on The Angel »

We have just returned home following a 6 night stay at the Angel over the Chippenham Folk Festival bank holiday weekend. Our stay at the Angel was a pleasure in many ways, particularly the staff who were friendly and went out of their way to be helpful. The room was over the gym but as we were out most of the time enjoying the delights of the festival this did not bother us. It was a very pleasant room with all we could wish for although I did find the bed a bit soft for my liking and the duvet at bit hard. The only disappointment was the menu change over the long weekend. We had enjoyed the extensive and delicious menu offered outside the festival period but once the festival started we only had limited choices offered. We understand they are exceptionally busy over the festival weekend, but suggest that they could revert to the more extensive menu for the bank holiday Monday evening as many of the festival goers will have left by then and the staff should be less under pressure. Needless to say we have rebooked for next year.

    « Relaxing Roasty »

We decided to take my mum out for Sunday lunch as a last minute decision. We opted to try the Angel and we were very impressed. The staff were all very helpful and attentive and nothing was too much trouble for any of them. We all chose a roast dinner followed by a dessert. The food was cooked to perfection and there was ample vegetables for all. I asked for extra gravy (always do with roast dinners) and they obliged at no extra charge (I've had to pay in the past in some establishments). We didn't feel rushed at all and ate at our own pace. We were offered a free coffee if we wanted it as part of the 2 course menu. We declined and settled for another alcoholic beverage. It was a very relaxing Sunday afternoon. Only criticism is I felt the bottle of wine was a little expensive but after all it is a hotel. We will definitely visit again for Sunday lunch.

    « Worth a visit »

A good quality hotel with plenty of on site facilities (gym and swimming pool as well as bar, restaurant etc) Rooms are well equipped although decor looking slightly dated. Some work to do on the bathrooms as well - albeit that they are perfectly serviceable. On site car parking facilities. Staff very helpful and there is a reasonably priced menu as well, which includes a set menu for two and three courses. Doesn't warrant an excellent but certainly very good. Tip - avoid a room above the gym/pool.

    « A pleasant hotel »

This is an extremely pleasant hotel which is conveniently central in Chippenham. It has a relaxing feel with helpful staff who are familiar with their jobs so that it runs smoothly. At the back of the hotel there is an attractive small garden with seats under trees and with flowering shrubs which are pretty. There is a swimming pool which made me wish I had not forgotten my swimsuit. Our room was nicely furnished with comfortable beds and a neat bathroom. And, unlike when you are abroad, there were tea and coffee making facilities in the room. I would go there again.

    « what a find »

There's not much choice in Chippenham for accommodation but that doesn't matter because you should stay here anyway! A really nice building, good room, swimming pool, and a lovely garden, right in the centre of Chippenham. Remarkably buzzing throughout the morning in the bar/lobby with locals having coffee and lunch - a nice atmosphere, and very pleasant staff.

    « Always charming »

In the middle of Chippenham and yet it's quiet and charming. Has gym facilities and small pool that needs renovation but is adequate. Well organized hotel. Eating facilities good and friendly service. Only UK news channels on TV.

    « Wedding Party »

We arrived on Friday evening for a 2 night stay, the reception staff and most of the waiting staff were very polite and friendly. Room was good. However after buying a malt whisky for myself and a friend , when returning to the bar later to purchase another we were told that had now been put away and we could have just a standard or a Jameson's ! When I mentioned this the following morning to the girl who had originally served us before finishing her shift she asked me if her colleague was rude about it ? I said not rude exactly but very abrupt, she said he should have served us as it had only been put in the cupboard as it was after 11pm. Also after returning from the wedding on sat eve several of us were hoping to have a nightcap , only to be told rather rudely the bar is closed ! But it clearly said on literature in the room , guests were able to purchase alcohol 24 hrs. They certainly missed out on a considerable amount of revenue! We will have to think carefully before staying with Best Western again if we wanted to have a nightcap because I am afraid to say Best Western definitely were not the BEST on this occasion.

    « Great hotel, avoid room 201! »

This Best Western hotel is a combination of traditional English country charm with the chain's renowned modern facilities and expected clean, contemporary rooms and dining. My experience was slightly marred by being located in room 201 of the modern block which I discovered was above the hotel's gym meaning that I heard the late night (and early morning!) fitness enthusiasts pounding away on the treadmill. Unfortunately I only found this out after returning from my late evening meal and put my head down at around 11pm ?? Great location, clean and comfortable rooms, attentive staff and good food - recommended for business and leisure visits.

    « Pleasent stay »

My wife and I chose this hotel as we were visiting friends in the area. On arrival we were greeted with a pleasant receptionist and were checked in within a few minutes. Our room was a good size with a decent bathroom everything was very clean. Breakfast on the first morning was very good in taste and service, however on the second day I ask for scrambled eggs on toast they came out looking like it was just chucked onto a plate, eggs then toast on top. different I suppose. On the whole we enjoyed our stay, the only annoying thing was being woken up 2 mornings out of 3 by kids running around on the floor above, and ignorant people talking loudly both late in the night and early morning with no consideration of other guests, but that is not down to the hotel that's just ignorance.

« Handy town centre hotel »

If you need a hotel in the centre of Chippenham, this place is perfect. The free parking also helps. The rooms are of good standard. I found the hotel wi-fi a bit dodgy at times as it often failed during the evening of my stay. Please bear in mind that if its raining, there is a noisy drain outside room 105 creating a rather inconvienent "glugging" noise.

« A good quality product, in a central location. »

The overall impression you get from this hotel is that the management and staff are out there to make you the customer happy; from check in through the services and gym that the hotel offers it's guest, through to check out the experience is a breath of fresh air and welcoming. The comfortable room I was given, was a mix of old and modern elegantly furnished, with both an open fireplace, as well as a large flat screen TV. In the bathroom fresh large towels and quality toiletries were provided. Free WiFi, available throughout the hotel, was found to be quick and responsive at all times. Due to the time I checked in, I was not able to review the dinner menu, but based upon both a browse of the menu, and the quality of breakfast the following morning it looks good.

« Quirky mix of old and new, but it works! Great if visiting Castle Combe race circuit. »

I booked two rooms here overnight 1st May as we were visiting Castle Combe race circuit. The weather looked dire and I fancied a bit of comfort for the night! Last minute booking at £82.00 per double room which I thought very competitive.(Breakfast not included but I needed an early start so no issues and it was nice not to have it included in the price as I always feel I've been short changed if I need to get away early) It was a short easy drive to and from the circuit, and loads of available parking to the rear of the hotel. Entry from the car park is via a very modern annexe but built with the native stunning stone. It was spacious, light, airy and welcoming. A walk through a very pretty courtyard leads to the original and beautiful old building. Not too sure about the odd looking metallic pod doubling as the reception desk though. Bit out of place. Receptionist polite and welcoming and ensured the two rooms were together. She gave us all the info we needed about restaurant times, swimming pool and gym access etc. Bar was again spacious and the barman friendly and attentive. We ate in the restaurant, and pleasantly surprised by prices and menu, although steered away from the steaks as in my opinion these were the only items slightly over priced. The waitresses were lovely, efficient and friendly. Always smiling. What really stood out though were the double rooms situated on the second floor in the modern annexe. Despite being old fashioned lock and key entry (this really doesn't bother me at all) the room was incredible. Massive double bed (two singles joined as per many hotels), Sony TV, full sized ironing board and new iron. Excellent tea making facilities etc. Rooms large enough for full sized wardrobe, desk, coffee table, two lounge chairs and a full size free standing fan. Bathroom again, very spacious. (tap flow in bath was slow but I really am nit picking here). Shower was fine. Lovely quiet and comfy nights sleep. Checking out easy and quick. This is right in the town centre and I would have loved to have stayed for another night at least to explore. Next time we race there, I will definable return.

« Beautiful hotel, convenient location »

The gym is good and clean, rooms are very spacious and nice and there is a garden that would be great for drinks in the summer. Only bad thing is the walls are too thin and we could hear the neighbours fighting and the other guests hitting the walls to make them shut up. Otherwise it was nice. Very close to the bus station and fair distance from the train station.

    « Thanks »

Had a issue with the first room, we had the lovely young duty manager went out of her way to resolve all issues. A brilliant example of excellent customer service skills, well done you. A lovely hotel, great food ,great receptionists, great staff .You could not have asked for anything more.

« Suitable location for work »

This hotel was charming and in the middle of Chippenham when i visited for a business trip. The rooms were clean, tidy and spacious. Free wifi was available and the food was not too expensive at the hotels own restaurant. Parking is available, although I imagine could be an issue due to the size of the car park during busy period. Other than that there is also access to an on-site swimming pool which you need to book at reception when checking in. All round a good decent English hotel. I would visit again.

« Great hotel in lovely location »

This is a great hotel to stay in as a couple. It is dated in decor (and the rooms are accessed via keys) however this does not impact on the enjoyment of the stat. We stayed in a double room which had a lovely comfy king size bed, huge television, welcome tray (with tea coffee hot chocolate biscuits) an iron an dressing table. Dated decor could do with modernisation but didn't take away from comfort. The bathroom was spacious, nice bath and shower and huge mirrors and shampoo/conditioner/lotions. Again dated but functional. We didn't have breakfast on either night but have drank in the bar previously which was lovely. Staff are friendly and when we couldn't get in from the street one night we rang the bell and the porter came straight away and walked us through the lobby. The whole hotel is set around a picturesque courtyard with tables and a well which is beautiful and all the rooms overlook this. The swimming pool looked great but again we didn't get chance to use this. Great location on Chippenham high street short walk from all the shops, bus stop, river and slightly longer walk to the train station. Chippenham is a beautiful town with great access to Bath, Castle Combe, Stone Henge, Avebury and other Cotswold villages. The hotel could do with a modern facelift but is definitely worth staying in.

« Clean, Comfortable and Quirky »

I liked this hotel enormously. It is an old building, extended significantly with addtiional rooms in an annexe at the rear of the building. While many period features have been maintained there are some really modern touches, some of which work better than others. I'm not sure the rather ugly stainless steel 'pod' works as a suitable reception desk. Staff were friendly and helpful. Parking is limited and the car park can get very full during the day. There is free overnight parking in two adjacent car parks which is a big plus. Rooms may be in the main part of the building - mine overlooks the Market Square area - this can be noisy at night with cars going by and people shouting to one another - rooms in the Annexe would be much quieter. The Leisure Centre looked spotless - wish I'd had time to use it.

    « Town centre hotel »

The hotel is situated in the centre of Chippenham, and just a two minute walk to the bus station with frequent services to Bath, Swindon and other nearby towns. Reception was a bit quirky, and with its stainless steel appearance looked like it was part of the kitchen area. We arrived after 2pm but had to wait over an hour for our room to be ready, so perhaps management might like to consider offering other guests in a similar position a tea/coffee whilst they wait. Our room was situated in the annex at the rear of the hotel, and was clean, comfortable and of a reasonable size. As there is no direct connection to the main part of the hotel, it could be a little uncomfortable racing across the courtyard in inclement weather. Breakfast offered the standard English cooked breakfast with kippers as an alternative, or there was a Continental choice, all served by friendly and efficient staff. There is a small indoor pool that seemed fairly popular during visit. There is a medium size car park at the rear of the hotel, which can get busy during events at the hotel, but there are numerous other public car parks nearby which are free from 1800-0800.

    « A hotel with a confused identity »

the Angel Hotel is well placed in the heart of Chippenham, although best to use a Sat Nav to find it on your first visit. A small car park that is adequate for the number of rooms can get very busy around lunchtime. There is alternative parking close by but, all of this time restricted during the day, but unrestricted between 6.00pm and 8.00am. The view of the front of the hotel is in the pedestrianised centre. Which only has access for Taxis. You will approach the modern rear of the building. The Angel is a period hotel with a modern extension which you will walk through to reach the reception in the old building. I stayed in the old period building which has lots of quirks, which have been screened by an ill conceived modern look. The reception area itself has the feel of an afterthought. It looks like a converted broom cupboard with a stainless steel or aluminium screen which does not lend itself to a welcome for the visitor. The staff are friendly and helpful. Being in the old part of the building there are sudden level changes the receptionist warns you of and I part fell into my room as the step up is immediately behind the door as you open it. On the plus side the room size is generous, excellent bed with a big bath/shower room. The lighting though was dim. There was a dimmer switch but I could not raise the light level. During my stay, there was no hot water before 6.00am and I could not get any hot water in the shower for the two days I stayed. The carpet looked a little grubby. Not unhealthy but probably ready for a clean and the bath mat towel was frayed. Bar area expansive though a little small, again clean, very modern, functional without being welcoming. Pricing is standard hotel, personally I thought the wine expensive, but I can be difficult to please. Restaurant is a good size, service is slow, and the menu limited a wide choice of steaks but as an example if you wanted fish there was just fish and chips. Observing other tables there was a good selection of vegetables for those who ordered them. Again very friendly and attentive staff. I had mussels which were overcooked, I think this was a matter of timing as I was with a group. So okay but not recommended as a dining experience. If you are looking for a short stay in the area and want to be close to the heart of the town; this hotel is ideal. I would recommend you research other restaurants for your eating experience if you are staying more than one night.

« Not worth the money »

Over 20 hairs in my bath which was disgusting. I'd come home from a wedding really early as I was really poorly, therefore I didn't have energy to phone reception and deal with it. Room was small but ok. Couldn't check in at 2pm which was irritating for us but staff were polite and helpful. Breakfast was not good. I am a vegetarian so asked the waitress if they had any veggie alternatives for the cooked breakfast and she replied with 'yes, kippers.' Not the best response. So paid a lot for very little. Fruit wasn't good and not many yoghurts etc by 9:45am. Won't stay there again.

« Not as good as it could have been »

Room was nice but bathroom wasn't clean, room wasn't ready for check in time, average breakfast not great for vegetarians and over priced for what we got. Breakfast- no veggie alternative in a cooked breakfast- premier inn do quorn. Bath had hairs in the bath. Check in was 2pm it wasn't ready and no alternative was offered and we had to get to a wedding so couldn't check our room until late in the evening when it was too late. £99 wasn't value for money based on the above. Room was very nice and well decorated so it was a shame.

« Pleasant but could be better »

This is a traditional hotel that has been modernised for the conference market. A lot of the character has been removed in the communal areas and the bar is pretty bleak and unwelcoming. It didn't help that when we wanted a nightcap on the first night most of the bottles had been taken away and it took ages for the barman to find what we wanted. Also, we couldn't book the restaurant for either night because of a conference that was there. Our room was in the old part of the building overlooking the market square and was very spacious, clean and comfortable and had a bit of character. Breakfast was fairly standard but the service was a very slow, particularly on the Sunday when we sat for 30 minutes before our order was taken. Definitely needed better organisation. It is in a very central location. There was nothing major wrong but on the other hand there was nothing in particular that would make me go back there.

    « A lovely stay »

We had a lovely stay at this hotel. This hotel is within walking distance to the train station which is handy for Bath. The breakfast was lovely and is cooked to order. The room was clean and had everything we needed. Including hair dryer, shower cap, shower gel, kettle, tea & coffee. The wifi is best in the lobby. Not so good in the room I would recommend this hotel

    5
« Excellent hotel in the town centre »

The Angel Hotel offers a full range of services and is ideally located in the town centre. The staff are welcoming and helpful. Based on the layout of this traditional hotel, the rooms are likely to vary in size and configuration, but the Lacock room is spacious and well-appointed (the price reflected this).

    « Nice stay »

Only stayed for one night as couldn't find a hotel in bath for less than 160 quid at short notice! Free car parking, helpful staff, and excellent location right in the centre. Not much in Chippenham but nice enough for a base to explore bath - which is half hour away mind. Didn't use pool or gym but rooms were spacious and nice.

« One night while away on business »

I was attending a two day seminar in Chippenham and so one night staying over was required. The hotel was chosen and booked by my company so no real say in the place. It was nice enough, attentive and organised reception staff greeted us all and soon enough we were off to our respective rooms. Mine had two single beds which was a little annoying but as I said, no real choice in what I got so made the best of it. I found the room a little stuffy but overall had an ok night. The breakfast was good quality although quite slow so be aware do you are in any sort of rush.

« Overall very good indeed »

We spent one night in two interconnecting rooms. Both rooms were very clean and nicely stocked with tea, coffee and toiletries. The double room was comfortable. The interconnecting room was two good single beds and (because we needed to sleep 3 children) one (what I would call) 'Z' bed. The 'Z' bed did not have a proper mattress and they'd put pillows on it. It was very small and my 9 year old was almost too big for it, it was also very uncomfortable. The location is excellent, it is very central to town and about 10 mins walk to the train station. The restaurant served reasonable food in the evening and an excellent breakfast. All staff were friendly and helpful. The pool is very clean, it is on the small side, but perfectly adequate and very safe for children (1.2m or 1.3m deep - I can't remember). We stayed here because we were going to Bath and the hotels in Bath were eye-wateringly expensive. The train was £5 return and runs every 30 mins. I thought the hotel was very good value for money and I would return. I did however notice that there were plug in fans in all the rooms and wondered if it might be a bit hot in the summer? We have a room overlooking the courtyard (rooms 204 and 206) and they were lovely and quiet, however, they are up 1 flight of stairs so not accessible for wheelchair users or people who find stairs difficult.

    « Great for Families visiting Wiltshire/Cotswolds »

There is a free parking lot that does fill up. We always managed to get a space, so I can't speak to where you would park otherwise. The pool water is very warm and fairly shallow. The courtyard has a cottage feel to it, is cute and we be lovely to sit and relax during nice weather. The staff are friendly. Our family room was clean, with a pull out couch and twin-size bed already made out for our two children. Our room was very quiet. On days when we had placed the do-not-disturb sign on the door, housekeeping left fresh towels and cadbury hot chocolate mix. The bathroom was clean and modern, but nothing fancy. We prepaid for our breakfast by selecting the "Bed and Breakfast" option through the booking site. This worked out cheaper than paying for breakfast each morning. I would describe our breakfast dining experience as average. You can choose from fruit, pastries, juice, yogurt and the "Full English Breakfast", but I ordered just eggs and tomato, and my daughters would order just what they wanted too, which was fine. The bed was a bit on the firm side and the pillows weren't luxurious, but the bed was better than what I have experienced at Best Western's in the United States (which I avoid "like the plague"). I would stay here again, and based on this experience, I wouldn't hesitate to stay at another Best Western Plus in the UK.

    « Excellent hotel. »

We recently had a two night stay for my birthday and Mother's day and could not fault it. We sat by the fire in the cosy lounge in the evening and ordered hot chocolate, when they arrived, complete with whipped cream and marshmallows, mine had a birthday candle in. What a lovely surprise! Our room (on the ground floor) was very spacious, clean and comfortable. Staff were friendly helpful. The breakfast choice was amazing, something to suit everyone. My only regret was that I didn't have time to use the gym or pool, but there's always next time!!

« Good market square hotel »

The hotel is in the centre of Chippenham with the main entrance opening out on to the market square, while the rear entrance is from the car park in a new building which is sympathetically blended with the original hotel with its 400-year-old coaching inn origins. Nearby is a small shopping centre. The hotel car park can become crowded but we never found a problem parking. We stayed in the new building which opens on to an attractive courtyard garden with benches and gazebos with a short walk to the main hotel and its reception, restaurant and function rooms. The new building also includes a swimming pool and a gym for the use of guests. Our room, 201, was over the gym and the background noise of TVs could be heard which was mentioned to reception who immediately sent someone to turn them down. On another occasion shouting could be heard from guests in the gym for a short while. It was only heard in the background but was still a little irritating. This appeared to affect just the rooms directly over the gym, and to be fair it was not a constant noise, nor was it late at night and would depend not only on how many guests used gym, but also on how noisy they were, but it is a point to consider. The room itself was clean and large, with a king size double, free Wi-Fi, tea and coffee making facilities, hair dryer, toiletries, a large TV and adequate plugs and storage. There were plenty of towels and bedding and, apart from the occasional noise from below, the room was quiet with no traffic noise. Staff were all helpful and friendly and breakfast is excellent with a well-cooked full English plus a range of self-serve cereals and extensive Continental items. We ate in the restaurant twice where the food was good and reasonably priced. There was a problem with a steak on the second occasion, it looked fine but a large portion was inedible. Staff dealt with it commendably quickly, efficiently and satisfactorily though, with an apology and a minimum of fuss, which says much more about the hotel and staff than the serving of a poor steak. During the day the hotel lounge and bar area seems to be popular as a regular meeting place for coffee and cakes for locals and the cakes on offer did look tempting. Chippenham itself is a pleasant enough market town with an interesting history, the Danes surrendered to King Arthur at Chippenham apparently. The town's history is well told in the small museum next to the hotel. The town is on the edge of the Cotswolds and close to Bath so is a reasonable centre for exploring the area.

    « A disappointing stay »

We stayed in the hotel for 1 night. We arrived and had a long wait at reception to be then be given a limited amount of information about the hotel and facilities available. Room was quite dated and tired. Bathroom tiles were cracked and the room was very cold. Overall disappointing. Paid £22 for breakfast which was okay at best.

    « Very pleasantly surprised »

I have stayed in a few Best Westerns and generally I have found them to be fairly poor and rundown. This was a huge and pleasant surprise. It is a charming hotel, a beautiful old building, very well done and really lovely staff.

« In the Town Center »

As I wright this at 2:30am the man in an adjacent room is sleeping soundly as I can hear him ! There are rooms in the main building as well as some in a newer section at the rear, there is also a pool at the rear of the Hotel. My room was located in the main older part of the building and overlooked a block wall from the neighboring estate agent, not an issue for one night in February, the Bathroom was dated but clean and perfectly adequate. WiFi as with most Best Westerns is free and easy to connect on to with no additional passwords or log in's required. The car park is accessed from Bath Road at the back and was adequate and Free of charge, the front entrance of the Hotel is straight into the old part of the Town centre.

    « Very good overall »

We stayed in the Angel Hotel for 1 night so that we could attend an event in Chippenham and, overall, it was lovely. It is a very nice hotel and the lady on reception was lovely. The room we had was in the newer part of the hotel and was great - very large with plenty of space to move around and get ready for our night out. The bed was huge and the bathroom also did not disappoint. The only problem we encountered was at breakfast. Whilst the main cooked breakfast was very nice and was served hot and relatively quickly, we had to ask for a 2nd time for coffee and tea, and the toast we ordered didn't show up at all. In fairness, we didn't bring this to the attention of the staff and therefore can't complain about it too much. It was a bit of a niggle, and shouldn't have happened, but it didn't spoil anything enough to make a big deal out of it. Overall the visit was great and should we need to stay in chippenham overnight again, we would happily chose to return to the Angel.

« Best for central location in Chippenham »

Located not far from Chippenham rail station and a car park at the rear of the hotel combine with a central location this the ideal hotel. My room overlooked the car park and was so quiet that you don't realise there is road nearby. Close to the swimming pool with a lovely courtyard to walk through to the bar/restaurant/lounge. The staff made my stay effortless from check-in to checkout. The staff from reception to those in the restaurant at breakfast.

    « A quick Lunch! »

Thank goodness for Ann.. she was wonderful... friendly and helpful. The other ladies were lovely too. I think the manager was having a bad day. He was not very friendly but that was probably because the deep fat fryer had broken! We changed from Fish and Chips to the delicious beef sausages (we probably would have said no to the vegetables which came separately.. just too much food! Not a complaint at all but just seemed a bit of a waste)

    « Wifi didn't work »

The hotel in general wasn't too bad but the room was cold and the wifi wouldn't work. The staff however were very attentive and the breakfast was of good quality and the restaurant area was very smart. The hotel was in the centre of Chippenham so ideal for shopping.

« Nice little spot in the middle of town. »

I stayed here four nights on business and was given room 211 in the newer section of the hotel. My room overlooked the car park and was quiet. The bed was very big but this was because it was two singles pushed together. Wifi was very good. This hotel is right near all the shops, pubs and supermarkets in Chippenham which was useful for popping into if you don't have time to travel to eat. The hotel is a little tired but not too tired to prevent you having a comfortable stay. Breakfast was very average with a choice of continental ie cereals, fruit, cold meat and cheese, and full English to order. I was provided with soya milk which was nice. There was a small gym and a postage sized pool. The gym was adequate for my needs. The pool however was like a gold fish bowl and other guest passing by on there way to and from the bar or reception were able to see right in. This was a little disconcerting.

« Only place to choose »

We attended this hotel whilst on an over Christmas coaching break with Galloway coaches.. My wife and I were accommodated in the annex building which is just a very short walk across an enclosed courtyard from the main building. No real hardship but a bit of a bind if it's raining as, apart from the fitness room and swimming pool, all the other amenities are in the main building. Our twin bedded room was of a good size, clean and well equipped with TV and tea/coffee making equipment. We were well catered for throughout our four day stay by a friendly and welcoming staff. The meals were of good portions and well prepared. I reported a faulty lamp in our en-suite facility to reception one morning and it was repaired by the time we returned later that afternoon. There's no doubt that if my wife and I were to visit that area again there's only one place to choose for our stay - The Angel.

    « Best in chippenham »

A two night visit to Chippenham staying at The Angel. The room was well equipped with good TV and free internet. The bed was a little hard for my liking but slept well and undisturbed. Lounge bar busy lunchtimes - food only OK, wine very expensive! Breakfast good the first morning but pretty inedible the next day - hard overcooked bacon, concrete hash brown - must have been a different cook as someone else with the same experience suggested. Do take a drive and walk around Avebury , and also visit nearby Lacock.

« Great staff, good health club »

This hotel tries really hard to please and all the staff are excellent, nothing is too much trouble. I had a room in the newer block at the rear of the building next to the main car park, which was really large. The room was a little cold with only a small radiator but after a while there was no problem. The food in the restaurant was standard fare but decent quality and big portions. The small gym had decent equipment and the fairly small pool is nicely designed and fitted out. The hotel is right in the centre of Chippenham but the car park is at the back of the new part of the hotel. You need to take quite a detour if you end up at the front of the hotel in Market Place in order to find the car park. I have no idea what the rooms in the main hotel are like but the ones in the Health Centre block are decent. If you are staying in Chippenham it is worth staying here if you can get a decent rate.

« Nice hotel, friendly staff, good food »

Stayed here for a weekend trip from London. It's in a central location in Chippenham, right next to the market square. The staff is welcoming and friendly. The room was clean. Though we stayed in the more modern annex at the back. You can hear when people in the room above ours were walking. The beds are on the harder side but manageable. But it was very warm in the room and it being on the ground floor facing the courtyard opening the windows and keeping the over curtain open wasn't an open either. That was really the main point that made the sleep less pleasant. On the plus site, though, the the restaurant serves good dinner. And pets stay for free, which is very rare these days as most places that do accept pets charge up to £15 per pet and night. With two dogs that easily can add up to another £30 per night. So not having to pay anything is a great plus point for pet owners to choose this hotel.

« Good location but a little tired »

Stopped here for a week in December on business. My room was spacious and the bed comfortable. I think it was an upgrade as it was a named room "neston" in the main part of the old building. Down side was the carpet in the bedroom was a little tired and grubby. The swimming pool was very small but warm. Staff very helpful.

    « Amazing room »

Lovely clean hotel with good food. The room on the top floor had a huge bathroom with great tub and shower , view of the square . Very friendly team of staff. Nice pool and courtyard which would be lovely in the summer. Very near the centre of town too

« Best Western Angel - Business Trip »

This hotel is always my first choice when visiting Chippenham. Central location and a comfortable feeling throughout. Staff are really friendly and always happy to engage in conversation. My preference is to request a room in the main building. Most of these come with stand alone fans, which can come in handy as sometimes the rooms get a tad stuffy.

    « Cold Room »

We booked this hotel to visit family and have a bit of us time. I was directed to a lovely bedroom with single glazed windows and a freezing cold room. One radiator wasnt working and the other took the 4 hours we were out to warm up the room - finally got home at 11.30pm and it was warm. We had spent 3pm-6pm in bed freezing before getting ready and heading out. The breakfast looked amazing (although we were eating elsewhere) and I used the gym early in the morning which was easy to access. I left my expensive shampoo behind in the room and although I rung up the minute I got home (in Exeter) the lady said nothing had been handed in and would call if something did. I never got a call. So just be careful of leaving things behind.

    « Angel's Retreat »

We were impressed with the receptionist when checking in,sorry, but forgot her name.It was straight forward done in a few minutes. The Hotel gave us a ground floor room as requested because my wife has walking problems, our room 114 was looking onto the courtyard. Our room was comfortable, clean and with the weather being so cold, warm ,when we but the heating on. The staff at the hotel were pleasant and helpful with one stand out person being "Katherine" a young waitress who was polite to my wife and myself. At breakfast was the norm for the standard of the hotel,my only gripe was at breakfast we were having our cereals and the waitress brings our cooked breakfast ,I would have thought she check if we had finished first, this happen again same waitress the next day to another two couples next to us. Nice furnishings in the hotel plenty of sitting areas for a chat or a drink. The Angel Hotel ticks all the boxes. Wi-Fi could have been better no good in our room but in the Hotel it was fair. The indoor pool was small but ideal for young families staying at the Hotel. We both liked the Hotel and would return some time in the future.

« lovely room - food a hit or miss »

Stayed here for three nights while working in the area. The room (located in main part of the hotel) was great - a lovely mix of modern and old. I had no view to speak of - but this wasn't a problem. There is no elevator in the building (it's old and probably listed) so if stairs are a problem let the booking people know that. My room was well appointed with lots of plugs and free wifi. I had a big modern style king size four poster - the mattress was a tad uncomfortable (a mattress topper would help minimize the discomfort of coil/springs). An absolute bonus for me was the presence of a great little gym and pool. The hotel has a number of lovely public areas with comfy sofas and chairs - all around a very nice place to stay for a few days. I ate breakfast there and each morning requested veggie sausages - the first morning I was told they were usually available - but they'd just run out. So I had a cheese and mushroom omelette instead - very nice of them to make for me, but it was unfortunately pretty grim (overcooked and fried on both sides). Coffee was weak and like dishwater - nasty. No veggie sausages on subsequent days - so not really great breakfast options for vegetarians. Dinner on the last night - was also a bit of a drag: I was told they weren't taking restaurant bookings until after 8pm because they had a banquet - and the restaurant was full. 'Full' meant three or four tables! The banquet was for 13 people apparently - I suppose this must have been an understaffing issue in the kitchen, but was somewhat bewildering and annoying to see a virtually empty restaurant being described to me as 'fully booked'. Dinner service doesn't start in the restaurant until 7pm on regular days either - so families might find that inconvenient. I'd definitely stay here again, the staff were young, helpful and pleasant, and apart from some issues with the restaurant - I was happy with my stay. Sorting out breakfast and dining - offering better coffee and making the mattress more comfortable - the Best Western Angel Plus would have scored an overall 4 or 5 from me.

    « Mixed experience »

Stayed here for two nights as running a workshop there. Food was fine, room ok if a bit old-fashioned - very warm (no air con). Free wifi that worked well. Staff were young and helpful. Only complaints were double booking of a room on second day and refusal of conference manager to leave training room key with me. It meant the reception staff had to continually let us in and lock the room. Lack of trust?

« Have Stayed Here Several Times »

Have stayed here several times in the past. Checked in again Thurs / Fri 5/6 November 2015. Everything was fine. In fact, I thought the hotel had improved which inspired me to write a review. Relaxed atmosphere. Room was good. Food was fine. Public areas were clean. Restaurant staff were attentive. Reception staff were helpful and efficient. Good location within walking distance of the railway station. Good value for money.

    « The Angel - Chippenham »

Have it all - comfort, convenience, great little gym and helpful staff. Great English breakfast available, great lounge to meet for drinks and/or supper, and a lovely courtyard blending the beauty of the old buildings, rambling flowers and lovely pool. Rooms are clean and spacious and beds are comfortable...

« Great location for exploring Cotswold UK »

Pleasant hotel and help. Clean with good breakfast, but dinners need help, very bland. WiFi was weak and variable in our room. Overall would stay there again if am in the area. Close to train and buses. Easy to get to with public transportation.

    « Good Experience »

I stayed in the UK for two weeks mainly in Chippenham, Bath, and Bristol. I think Angel is the best hotel I experienced during this period. The room of hotel is traditional English style, and it is very big. The atmosphere is fairly nice. I think the only thing Angle can improve is the laundry service, in terms of speed and types. Overall I love this hotel and I will go back again.

« Fantastic Four Poster Suite! »

We stayed at the Angel whilst visiting friends. We stayed in the Laycock Four Poster Suite & it was divine! Queen size bed, stunning bathroom with roll top bath, all in a beautiful room with 3 large Georgian Windows, looking out onto the old market square. Beautiful reception area, inner courtyard, indoor pool & adequate parking at the new side of the hotel. Breakfast was nice, but could have been better - i.e. Better quality sausage, jams etc, but commercialised. Apart from that, thoroughly enjoyed our stay! Thanks to the staff too! Would definitely recommend a stay here - & the Bhuddist Indian restaurant across the square!

« Conveniently located in Chippenham Centre, acceptable service level »

When we arrived, we parked at the rear and had to walk to the reception far inside and register. Since we had paid in advance it was quick and simple. We got the keys and even a person came to help us with our bags as one of our rooms was a level above the ground floor. Rooms were ensuite and good. Room service was good and we had a daily breakfast, which was a decent spread of cereals, fruit, dairy and cold cuts. We could order cooked dishes too.

« Weekend to meet the family »

Great hotel right in the centre of Chippenham - if you are in your car you will go round the back to the car park but front door opens onto the market square. The staff were excellent, very friendly and attentiveand although we only had breakfast ot was a really good full English. Comfy beds, warm room, in the new annexe with a lovely tree lined courtyard to walk through the the main hotel.

« Cute hotel in the xentre »

The hotel is clean and tidy and a good mix of old with new. The pool is relatively small but still good for a hotel of this size to have one. The breakfast was nice with plenty to chose from. The room was very large with lots of storage space and there's free parking at the back of the hotel. Lovely courtyard garden too.
