"Reasonable place to stay in Lugano"
Stayed two nights while on a tour. We got room 101, which really was more like a 1 bedroom apartment than a hotel room. Although it was huge, it was very sparsely furnished. Room amenities were fine, including a full kitchen. I'll talk about the safe below, but the short story is: don't trust it. Small problem in the bedroom was that the double beds blocked the electrical outlets behind them. To get our phone chargers plugged in, we had to pull the beds away from the wall. The bathroom was fine, and a fold-out drying rack above the tub was wonderful to have for the laundry we hand-washed. There's a very nice pool outdoors, and an enormous fitness center / spa in the basement level. Breakfasts were pretty basic, but OK. The restaurant was good, as was the bistro bar. Long complaint about the safe: The safe was in a kitchen cabinet, and was very finicky. I always test hotel safes before committing anything to them. This one required several more key presses than the usual type one finds these days, and the green reset button specified in the instructions was actually red on this one. No matter, it worked, so I put our valuables in it. It worked a couple of times after that, but then refused to open. I kept trying, probably about 20 times, and it finally opened. Then it locked itself while it was still open and became unusable.
"Do not stay at Villa Sassa"
Do not stay at Villa Sassa. Advertised as a 4 star but should be no more than a 2 star hotel. This property is neglected and is not in the condition that is represented in their pictures on line. The Grand Suite had minimal furnishings that were cheap and well worn. No decor to the rooms - very bare. Terrace overlooking Lugano had flimsy table and uncomfortable aluminum chairs. Not a place you want to relax. Do not stay at Villa Sassa.
"Wonderful hotel"
We had a great stay at Villa Sassa. We were upgraded to a suite and were delighted with the quality of the room and the wonderful view. All the staff were friendly and helpful throughout our stay. We ate in the restaurant on our first evening. We'd been looking at places to eat and this restaurant seemed to have good reviews. We weren't disappointed. Everything about the evening was wonderful - the staff were friendly, the view was beautiful and the quality of the food was amazing. Every dish was interesting, beautifully presented and high quality. We have nothing but praise for this hotel.
"Needs a makeover and would be perfect"
Booked the penthouse suite with lake view Although a large 2 bed flat with small kitchen and large dinging room, the room felt empty Location was fine, especially with a car Lots of spaces The electric canopies either were broken or didn't work The balconies were very dirty The stair areas had paint peeling The indoor and outdoor pools were very good as was the breakfast The spa was excellent and looks a recent addition The Hotel could be excellent if upgraded We wouldn't re visit unless it had the makeover first
"Great stay"
Beautiful views and wonderful pool area, tasty breakfast with prosecco, room was very clean but a bit outdated. The pool was the highlight of our holiday.
"Relaxing !"
A beautiful hotel with everything you need for a relaxing stay. I cannot fault it in any way. From the moment we arrived we felt welcomed. Staff were friendly and efficient. We were upgraded to a bigger room with a balcony overlooking the pool. So relaxing to just sit and admire the view. Thank you Villa Sassa for a very enjoyable stay.
"The scenery is memorable; the hospitality is not."
The scenery is memorable; the hospitality is not. The view of Lake Lugano and the surrounding mountains is absolutely stunning. Unfortunately, the service is the very definition of mediocrity. There was little sense of warmth, pride, or effort. The hotel promotes itself as a spa-focused destination, yet even the spa staff seemed largely uninterested in creating a welcoming or memorable experience. In addition, the hotel itself is in serious need of updating. It is dated and the finishes feel worn and cheap, the rooms, the spa and common spaces. This combination does not create a strong desire to make a return visit. The view can't do all the work. There are many places to get a wonderful view in Lugano. Our stay was an illustration of how the hospitality industry seems to be drifting away from a profession centered on welcoming guests and travelers and sharing the beauty of cultures and vibes of history with others. Travelers work hard and save for months—sometimes years—to take trips (for many, once in a lifetime trips) and deserve to enjoy them. The staff we encountered in this villa appeared indifferent to this basic idea. What stayed with me most was not a single or few interactions, but the overall culture of indifference. Having traveled extensively in Switzerland over many years, I have always associated Swiss hospitality with professionalism, warmth, and genuine attention to guests. At Villa Sassa, I found the service indifferent and uninspired and mediocre.
"Amazing staff let down but arrogant management"
Villa Sassa has an outstanding team, but management let the experience down. From the moment we arrived, the hotel staff were fantastic. The restaurant team and the spa staff in particular were warm, attentive, and clearly understood what guests need. They were professional, kind, and genuinely made us feel welcome. It is rare to find such a consistently caring team, and they deserve real credit for the experience we did enjoy. Unfortunately, that excellence was completely undermined by management. We raised a very simple issue about an access door to the pool being locked, which created unnecessary inconvenience, especially with children and when we had to walk much farther than needed. Instead of a sensible, guest-focused response, we were met with arrogance and no real effort to help. The hotel director, Andrea Buffarello, seemed completely unwilling to understand the guest perspective or consider a straightforward fix. What made this so frustrating was that the front-line staff clearly knew about the problem and even seemed resigned to it, which says a lot. It felt like the people doing the daily work cared deeply, while management was detached from basic guest needs. That contrast was impossible to ignore. Villa Sassa has the kind of staff that can make a stay memorable, but poor management decisions and a lack of empathy damaged what should have been a much better experience. The team in the restaurant and spa deserve praise; the leadership, unfortunately, does not.
"Nice hotel with nice view."
Nice place with nice view. Helpfull front office staff. I would reccomend a little training in hospitality for the waitress from the pool bar. Also, calling a : rum on the rocks with some lime, mint leafs and sugar - a "Mojito" and asking 16 euros for it might be disturbing for someone who has seen a real Mojito for way less money.
Dear Mr. Bogdan, Thank you for taking the time to share your feedback following your stay with us. We are delighted to hear that you enjoyed our location, the beautiful views, and the helpful service provided by our Front Office team. Your kind words are truly appreciated and will be shared with our staff. At the same time, we are sorry to learn that your experience at the pool bar did not fully meet your expectations. We appreciate your comments regarding the service and the cocktail preparation. Guest feedback is invaluable in helping us improve, and we will review your observations with the relevant team members to ensure we continue to deliver the high standards of hospitality our guests expect. Thank you once again for your constructive feedback. We hope to have the opportunity to welcome you back in the future and provide an even better experience. Kind regards, Adriana Mascetti Front Office
"Mixed feelings"
Some hotel staff very helpful and friendly. One older man was unhelpful, rude and really decreased our appreciation of this hotel. The views are good but rather isolated location. Not walkable to restaurants etc. Bus stop near by. Very old furniture and building old and maze like. Clean.
"Villa Sassa"
Nice hotel with a beautyfull view in the lake. Our room was upgraded Friendly people in the hotel. Verry good breakfast.
"Lovely Villa Sassa ❤️"
I loved our stay! We felt very well taken care of and had a lovely room overviewing Lugano! I would highly recommeme the hotel for leisure & pleasure trips :)
"A lovely relaxing hotel to stay"
A beautiful hotel with amazing views of Lugano. The spa was lovely and the gym was one of the best equipped we have been in. The staff especially at reception were super helpful and friendly. The hotel was very clean and continually being maintained. We had a lovely relaxing stay.
"Not worth your penny and not recommended"
The place is very run down, not clean and pretty old. Way too expensive for what they have. The kitchen in the suite has nothing and don't even know why they have it. Do not eat at the restaurant, the food is not that great and way too expensive. Also, do not charge your car because they charge you triple.
"Nice view"
Very good location and views . Good breakfast 🥞 good personal , nice decorations for a Christmas and New Year. 🎄🎉🎄🎉🎄
"Sehr angenehmer aufenthalt"
"My new favorite hotel in Switzerland"
Villa Sassa is a beautiful resort, with an amazing spa, awesome breakfast, outstanding service from friendly staff. Walkable to downtown Lugano - though a climb back up the hill. Wonderful time. Can't wait to come back.
"A great stay!"
We had the pleasure of staying at Villa Sassa on a recent trip to Lugano. Our room was very large with a full kitchen, dining rm, living room and balcony with a lovely view of Lake Lugano. The breakfast was good with lots of selection and a great balcony to enjoy it on with a fantastic view. Very close to the train station and if you are travelling light you could probably walk it. It's about a 15 minute walk to the centre of town with lots of restaurants to choose from. We did the Monte Bre tour which was really interesting and beautiful. The hotel itself is not super high end in terms of finishes but the service was great and we'd definitely stay there again if we travel to Lugano.
"Great experience overall, with potential for small enhancements"
We really enjoyed our time there — the suite was spacious, very clean, and offered a truly breathtaking view. The extra bed was quite basic and uncomfortable for our child. A more comfortable option would be greatly appreciated by families. The bedside lamps in the bedroom appeared rather worn and didn't quite match the otherwise elegant style of the hotel. The kitchen was completely unequipped. Having at least some basic items such as plates, glasses, and cutlery would be very convenient, especially for families traveling with children who might want a small snack between meals.
"Amazing"
Amazing stay. I loved this hotel. The Hotel free shuttle picked us up from the train station. Large rooms with extra-large balcony overlooking the Alps and water. Hotel has a wonderful indoor and outdoor pool, as well as Sauna and spa. Beautiful breakfast area with amazing views. Is a good 10 Min walk into town, or the bus stops out the front to take you to town, with the free transport card. Staff were all wonderful.
"Highly recommended"
Everything was amazing. Spacious and clean suites with great views. Nice wellness area. Excellent breakfast with wide choice. Friendly service. I can highly recommend.
Thank you so much for your wonderful review! 😊 We're delighted to hear that you enjoyed our spacious suites, wellness area, and the wide selection at breakfast. Knowing that you found our service friendly and would recommend our hotel truly means a lot to us. We look forward to welcoming you back soon! Warm regards,
"Amazing"
I had an amazing time! I was lucky to get a special upgrade of my room to an apartment and I enjoyed it very much! Great breaktfast!
"Satisfied"
Nice, clean and large rooms with amasing view in a private balcony I liked the idea of facilitating a free local bus rides to reach the city instead of private shuttles
Dear Sawsan, Thank you so much for your kind words! We are delighted to know you enjoyed the spacious and clean rooms, as well as the beautiful view from the private balcony. We're also glad that the free local bus service was helpful during your stay — we believe it's a nice way to explore the city with ease. It was a pleasure hosting you, and we look forward to welcoming you back again soon! Warm regards, Francesco Cardone - Front office Manager
"This hotel is not worth the price they ask for it."
Our premium suite was not worth the enormous price we paid. The room was huge but nearly empty. It looked like someone had just moved out of it, leaving the few pieces of furniture they did not want anymore because there were too old and ugly. No carpet, no decoration, no coffee machine and not even a plate in the kitchen. It would have been impossible to cook there even though we paid for having a suite with a kitchen. The terrace was dirty and furnished with 2 cheap chairs and a tiny table. Our white socks became black after a little while walking on the disgusting floor. Strangely enough, the hotel was full and we could not change room, so we were expecting a lot from the common spaces. But there were leaves, thorns and toys in the pool and it was ice cold in July. The outside could have been a great place to be but again it was not taken care for and the floor was covered in leaves, thorns, dead flowers and furnished with worn furniture. The walls are derelict and need fresh paint. This hotel definitely relies on an old reputation but does not make the effort to leave up to it.
Dear V-Claude-H, thank you for sharing your detailed feedback. We are truly sorry to read that your stay did not meet your expectations. However, we would like to address some of the points you raised. Our premium suites are designed to offer large, bright spaces with a minimalist style, which may differ from more traditional interiors but is very much appreciated by many of our guests. Each suite is equipped according to our standards, and our team is always available to provide any additional items upon request. Regarding the cleanliness and maintenance issues you mentioned, we regret that you did not contact our reception during your stay. Our staff is present 24/7 and would have immediately taken action to solve any inconvenience. We take great care of both rooms and common areas, and what you described does not reflect our usual standards. We understand that your experience was not as you wished, but we strongly believe that the value of our services, including the wellness area, spa, restaurants, and panoramic location, is in line with the prices we apply. We hope you will reconsider and give us the opportunity to welcome you again, so that we can offer you the experience that most of our guests enjoy and appreciate. Kind regards, Francesco Cardone - Front Office Manager
"Wonderful hotel in a great location."
The hotel offers a free shuttle service to and from the train station if you contact them in advance and also gives you a free travel card to use during your stay. There is a bus stop right outside the hotel and you can walk to the main square in about 10-15 minutes. We received a warm welcome on check and our room was spotlessly clean and very comfortable. The hotel location has beautiful views of the lake and the outdoor swimming pool has great views. Breakfast had great choice and there were good gluten free options. The bar staff were very friendly and their Aperol Spritz were very good.
Dear Sue, Thank you so much for your wonderful review. We are delighted to hear that you enjoyed our convenient location, shuttle service, and the complimentary travel card. It is also a pleasure to know that you appreciated the warm welcome at check-in, the comfort and cleanliness of your room, as well as the views from both the hotel and the pool. We are especially happy that our breakfast selection, including the gluten-free options, met your expectations, and that you enjoyed your time at the bar with our team. Your kind words mean a lot to us, and we very much look forward to welcoming you back for another memorable stay. Warm regards, Francesco Cardone - Front Office Manager
"Wonderful, perfect, loved it."
We had a wonderful stay here at the beginning of August. We booked a premium suite (room 153) and seemed to be very lucky as the room was brand newly decorated. It was spacious and very clean. Over looking the pool and the city. We used the pool each day and never struggled for sun-beds. I thought it was a lovely touch that they provide you with a bag to use for the pool. We ate in both restaurants and were very happy with both. Breakfast was also very good but couldn't enjoy it outside as too many wasps (can't be helped) The location was perfect, 10 min walk from station and down to the lake. Plus you are given a free bus pass for your stay. The staff were friendly and helpful. We will definitely be back.
Dear kirahampshire, Thank you so much for your wonderful feedback! We're delighted to hear that you enjoyed your newly decorated suite with its spacious comfort and lovely views, as well as our pool facilities and thoughtful touches. It's also great to know you had a positive experience at both restaurants and appreciated the convenient location and complimentary bus pass. We're sorry the wasps made it difficult to enjoy breakfast outside, but we're glad this didn't take away from your overall experience. Our team will be thrilled to hear your kind words, and we can't wait to welcome you back for another perfect stay! Warm regards, Francesco Cardone - Front office Manager
"My Negative Experience at Villa Sassa Hotel"
recently stayed at Villa Sassa Hotel in their Grand Suite room. Expecting a luxurious experience, I specifically informed the hotel by phone that I would be traveling with a young child and requested the room to be prepared accordingly. However, upon entering the room, I was shocked to find that the room was not prepared at all for a child. There were two huge glass tables that posed a serious safety hazard and made the room very uncomfortable. The furniture was also very old and outdated, definitely not matching the expectations for a "Grand Suite." The photos attached do not fully reflect the condition of the room.At around 2:30 AM, the air conditioning in the room broke down, causing great discomfort. The air conditioners, especially the one in the living room, were very noisy and clearly old. For people sensitive to noise, these units are absolutely not suitable.had to go down to the reception twice during the night. Thankfully, one young staff member at the reception was very helpful and did his best to assist me. However, the next morning, another reception employee spoke to me in a rude and threatening manner, saying things like, "If you speak properly, we can continue this communication." Such behavior is unacceptable in customer service.Furthermore, the restaurant staff were mostly rude and arrogant. When we asked about items not on the menu, we were told, "Please do not ask about items that are not available." The poor English skills of the waiters made it difficult to communicate and place orders. Additionally, the hotel did not offer any healthy breakfast options, which was disappointing.Due to these issues, I requested a 30% refund. However, the staff informed me that the manager is on vacation and they cannot process refunds at this time. They only offered a discount on a massage service, which I did not accept. Attached are photos showing the large glass tables in the room, which clearly demonstrate why this room was not suitable for a child.expect a written response and proper resolution from Villa Sassa management. I am sharing my experience so that others do not go through the same problems. I strongly advise anyone considering staying at Villa Sassa Hotel to be cautious. Think twice 🤔
"Amazing customer service"
I don't normally leave reviews but the staff here are so helpful and awesome. They picked us up from the station (waited 10 mins because we were lost) and dropped us off at the station on our last day which was extremely helpful as we had some heavy bags. They also gave us a free upgrade upon checking in which was hugely appreciated as it was our honeymoon and really made it special. The hotel while dated in places really makes up for it it in charm. It's a bit like stepping back in time but in a really nice way. Everything is extremely clean and our bedding and bed were extremely comfortable. They even asked us what type of pillow we preferred before arriving and as we like softer pillows they provided these which was great. The pool area is amazing the views are incredible. Breakfast is also decent and the staff can't do enough for you. We'd really love to come back, thanks so much!
"Very bad rooms and AC doesn't work"
Avoid at all costs, this is a really bad hotel, very old furniture and the AC is useless. We have paid 300 CHF for a 2 bed apartment and it only has AC in the living room and it doesn't work most of the time and when it works it doesn't bring any breeze to the bedrooms. Also the reception people are useless, they say a lot of nonsense. You are better off spending your money at a better place.
Dear Guest, Thank you for your feedback. We're sorry to hear about the issue with the air conditioning. The system was mistakenly set to heating mode instead of cooling, which is why it was not working as expected. We apologize for this oversight and understand how uncomfortable that must have been. Please don't hesitate to contact reception for immediate assistance — we're always happy to help resolve these issues on the spot. Kind regards, Francesco Cardone - Front office Manager
"Beautiful property!"
I stayed at this beautiful property as part of a Gate 1 tour. Villa Sassa is set back from the street enough that it's secluded and quiet. Many amenities as you'd expect….fitness center, excellent breakfast, spa, etc. Personnel at reception were exceptional, especially Marco, who went out of his way to help me with arrangements while my partner was hospitalized.
Dear Sandman3858, Thank you so much for your kind words and for taking the time to share your experience with us. We're delighted to hear that you enjoyed your stay at Villa Sassa and appreciated the peaceful setting and amenities. It's especially rewarding to know that our team, and Marco in particular, made a positive impact during what must have been a difficult time. We'll be sure to pass along your compliments to him. We hope your partner is now doing well and that we'll have the pleasure of welcoming you both back under better circumstances in the future. Warm regards, Francesco Cardone - Front office Manager
"Valid Voucher was not accepted. The donor has spent CHF 500 on it! Unbelievable! This indicates the administrative overlo"
Inflexible in administration, poor labeling of the access road, reception, etc. The villa is a bit outdated as far as the rooms are concerned.
"Poor Customer Service and Horrible Experience."
Horrible property with very poor customer service. We booked at this hotel several months using a gift voucher. We also emailed the property as instructed with all the relevant gift information. On our day of arrival they refused to accept the voucher, knowing it was expiring in a few days, and charged our card the total amount. Worst experience we've ever had at any hotel we've stayed. I would not recommend this place.
