We thoroughly enjoyed our stay! The location is superb and walkable to all things in town. The rooms were large and lovely, we rented a junior suite, which had two bathrooms and plenty of room for a Family. The historic elements of the hotel, like the large windows and sunny dining rooms are charming. The spa was very peaceful and modern and they had a full pool, sauna, steam and Jacuzzi circuit. The pool is not for kids however. Very much enjoyed the breakfast and our evening cocktail out on the rolling lawn overlooking the mountains. Staff is extremely friendly and helpful from the front desk, breakfast team, to cleaning crew and spa staff. Some of the common areas of the hotel are a bit worn, but overall you are in a historic hotel that has been maintained for many decades, and, we found our stay to be very pleasant. Also, very quiet, considering the central location. Highly recommend if you can embrace historic hotel vibe! Also even though no AC this hotel was built for that and we slept well even in a heat wave. Also if the hotel reads this, a happy hour could liven the common areas and highlight the beauty of the property by encouraging common gatherings!
Very pleasant and enjoyable stay. If you are a motorcyclist, like us, then its perfect with little luxury. The location is full of scenic wonders and great biking roads. Return to this hotel and relax or take a 2 minute walk into the village. Highly recommend.
Hotel is nice. Bit old but nice. Breakfast is ok. Kitchen is ok but has a lot to improve: Vegetarian concept for instance, chocolate fondant terrible; Room for meetings not adequate. Chairs not comfortable at all. Internet access not good and always falling. Service is not ok. Most of people are not nice. Not flexible. Actually we experienced very rude interactions: Example: pushing people with a table, on purpose, and not excuse; Some simple requests from guests were refused with nasty remarks ("The sun will disappear in 5 minutes, you can wait")
This is a typical late 19th century hotel built for the wealthy middle class that could afford a vacation in the mountains. Rooms are quite spartan, not having a sofa to relax on, but otherwise adequate. The best aspect of this hotel is the kitchen which prepares surprisingly good food for lunch and dinner. Of course the hotel can be enjoyed as a starting point for hikes for those who like it. For a lazy visitor like me there is not much to do except for waiting for the next meal.
I liked the charm of the old building, but Best Western can hardly claim credit for that. What they are responsibility for is the shoddy internet (slow at the best of times, non-existent for a couple nights) and rude serving staff. We were here for a conference during the off-season (October) and at every meal, 4/5 of the waiters acted like serving us was a huge burden -- nevermind that our conference was probably the only reason they collected a paycheque those days! There was one exception, a younger guy who perhaps just hasn't worked in the service industry long enough to become jaded? The others should retire already, and make room for the younger generation... It's not like this place is cheap, so I expect more. The breakfast was typical, neither good or bad, the lunches and dinners lacked variety. They were sneaky with the wine. We went to take a bottle from an empty table (our conference had reserved the whole dining room, so we had indirectly paid for every bottle in there, and as the table was empty, no one else from the conference was going to drink it), and the old guy server, who had already shoved that table into the wall and put away the chairs, stopped us with the excuse that someone might come, and instead opened another bottle that was no doubt charged to the conference, while the other bottle mysteriously disappeared into the kitchen. So yeah, basically stealing wine from the guests. The same guy was also splitting couples up to seat them at different tables, obviously on a major power trip. Sure it's just one person, but the fact that he still has his job speaks volumes of the hotel management.
My family stayed twice in this hotel as a first stop on our way south. Lovely environment, in winter this is a ski resort. Lively little city center. Beds are OK, bathrooms suffise. Wifi isn't very stable. We did not have dinner i the hotel but went out for dinner. Breakfast is OK. As said we came back so price and quality of the accommodation are fine.
My French husband and I (American) had our wedding of 80 people here. My husband grew up nearby and this was an absolutely perfect location for us. Our ceremony was outside on their large lawn overlooking the Vercors mountains. Our guests from all around the world were blown away by the view. Our aperitif was outside on their patio, overlooking the same mountains. And our reception & dancing was inside their classic, wooden, beautiful dining salon. The food was AMAZING. Planning a wedding from abroad is no easy feat, but with the help of our wedding planner everything went perfectly! If you're looking for a fun, adventure-filled destination wedding in the Alps in a town that is accessible and definitely NOT filled with tourists, Villard-de-Lans & the Grand Hotel de Pars is the perfect location. This hotel has been in the same family for 6 generations, which makes it very special! On the flip side, the rooms are very clean, but very simple. We opted to stay in rented chalets around town because we wanted a more luxurious accommodation experience.
We went to Villard de lans for a family weekend (with a seven year old). The hotel provided us with great platform to explore the town. Quiet hotel. The staff was friendly and available to help. The room were good and we all had a great night sleep. i recommend it if you need right in the middle of the town
I stayed in this hotel as part of a conference, so I did not have any choice in where to stay. The hotel, in principle, is comfortable. I found the room, though, when I arrived, a little stuffy. I tried to open the window, but the wind kept closing it. There was no way keeping the window open, without the wind knocking the window fully open and blowing everything. Another thing which I found irritating is the wireless connection, which was erratic at best. Since I rely on internet connection for everything I do, this most a major letdown. Another surprise was that during the 5 days I stayed there, they did not bother replacing the used soap and shampoo. Luckily, I brought some with me. As part of the package, I ate all meals at the hotels. All meals were decent, I especially liked the possibility to squeeze fresh orange juice in the morning, as I am used to do at home. There was no choice at lunch and dinner, but, as I said, the food was decent, thought the vegetarians among us complained about the choice. The ski resort is a distance away, you need a shuttle or a car.
My husband, 13yr old daughter and I stayed during the February half term earlier this year for a skiing trip and had a great time. The staff were friendly and helpful, especially as my French is somewhat limited, and the drinks service to the room was an added bonus. The room was quite old fashioned but charming and very comfortable, extremely warm and clean and we were amazed to find a completely separate shower room and toilet opposite our main bathroom which was a real bonus as there were three of us. We didn't eat at the hotel as we have visited the resort before and there are so many good restaurants to choose from locally. The only slight disappointment was the bar which sort of wasn't a bar! It was a room where you could order drinks and sit and relax, however the drinks are ordered from a menu and brought in from another room which does leave it lacking a little in atmosphere, as did the fact that it was quite under used. I did use the free wi-fi which was very useful, as was the large flat screen tv with BBC news 24. The location is great, right opposite the public swimming pool and ice rink, and it would appear from the building work going on during our stay that perhaps there may be a small pool or sauna/jacuzi type addition to this hotel for next year. This hotel is full of old fashined charm and we can't wait to book again for 2013.
