"Good Location"

Located in Sutter Street, 2 blocks away from Union Square. Close to Shopping, Restaurants and many stores. San Francisco famous Tram ride is in Powell street, next to the hotel. Hotel is very traditional theme , Rooms are small , however they are clean , neat and tidy. Bathroom is congested and it will be a challenge for some one slightly oversize, to use it . I am at 5'11” , couldn't sit in the commode comfortably as knees were hitting the sink cup board. No in- room fridge, how ever tea/coffee facility is available. Check in & Check out process is quick & efficient. Staff are friendly & helpful. I have seen the most interesting notice to its guest here, see my pictures.

"Excellent!"

This hotel has all you need to visit San Francisco: great location (one block from Union square), very clean and well-appointed rooms (renovated recently, I believe), and friendly staff. Rooms are small, which is standard for San Francisco. But, do you really care for a big room? No, if you're in town to explore San Francisco. And the room has everything you may need anyway. The hotel doesn't serve breakfast, but you have plenty of restaurants just steps from the door. They offer coffee in the morning and you can make coffee in your room as well. Highly recommended! I'll be back.

"Good hotel, central location"

06/07/2018

I stayed here recently for 3 nights. The hotel is in a good, central location, only 5 minutes walk from Union Square. Staff are friendly and helpful. The room was quite small (particularly by American standards) but it was big enough, and it was quiet. Plenty of dining options in the area.

"Terrible service. Stay away"

Went here with my girlfriend to celebrate the 4th of July after an intense two week road trip. We wanted to sleep in on the 4th so we'd be fresh that night. It'd be the first time this vacation we'd be getting more than 6 to 7 hours of sleep. We put the "Do not disturb" sign up. Much to our surprise, we were woken up at 13:00 by loud knocking and a note being shoved under the door. The note said that they were respecting our do not disturb sign, but it being after 2 pm, they won't be cleaning the room today. We were very confused about this. We went to the front desk to ask about it. I got to talk to the concierge. He didn't understand the problem at all. They always put that note under the door when you have the do not disturb sign on... I asked why do it at 1 pm with loud knocking tho? Well that's because checkout is before 1 pm... I informed him I'm not checking out. The concierge then said he didn't know why they knocked and just quietly stared at me. That was it. No apology, no nothing. According to him I could just go back to sleep. I told him sleeping doesn't work for me like that and that I wasn't happy about the situation. Then he told me "What do you want me to do about it? Just be happy. It's the 4th of July". I have never encountered such a terrible way of handling a complaint. What a lousy service attitude. I will never go to a Best Western again. I understand they can't unknock a door, but at the very least pretend to care about your customers experience.

"Great Boutique style hotel"

27/06/2018

Stayed here a couple of times with all being excellent experiences. The hotel is located just a block from Union Square and in a good part of the city. Its an older smaller hotel and feels more personal than the larger convention hotels. The rooms are small but with all basic amenities and very clean. Staff is all around very pleasant. There's a wall-greens and a 711 right across the street for snacks or beverages. There's also a liquor and wine shop right next door. A nice diner down the block and sushi restaurant for take out.

"Great stay, highly recommended "

I really enjoyed my stay at the Cartwright. The front desk staff were professional and accommodating to my noon arrival time. The hotel itself has a lot of charm and my room was updated and spotless. It faced the back which I would recommend if you mind street noise... Sutter Street is not too loud though so you could probably get away with it. Housekeeping came right up with a bucket of ice when I asked and there is coffee/tea in the room, as well as downstairs in the lobby. The area is nice and central but very close to some shady areas so do ask the front desk which direction to head in. Right up the hill is Nob Hill, Chinatown, and Little Italy, but down the hill can get strange. Overall I definitely recommend it and would stay again. Lots of great pubs and restaurants within walking distance

"Quick stay in San Fran"

26/06/2018

Stayed here for a few nights so we could have a look around San Fran. Found the hotel easily and dropped off bags before returning hire car to the Airport. The Hotel is in easy reach of the Bart on Powell St. On arrival check in was easy with politest of staff. Room although compact was exactly what was needed had everything in it. Bed was extremely comfortable and good storage for bags and clothes. No breakfast available but copious amounts of coffee and tea provided in the foyer. Didn't suffer from any street noise at all from outside despite being centrally located. Staff were excellent throughout the stay, made to feel very welcome. Would definitely visit again if in San Fran.

"Key location"

14/06/2018

I've stayed here in the past. The hotel has been remodeled since the last time I was here making the rooms bigger. I like the location. It's an old hotel so there's not a lot of amenities but we don't usually stay in the room when visiting SF. Close to Cable cars and Shopppng. Very centrally located. I like old hotels .

"Cartwright House Was Great"

We ended up changing hotels and coming to the Cartwright house The rooms were Great, the staff was OUTSTANDING. I would recommend this hotel very much. Since it was a last minute booking I was afraid we might have some issues But there were none for the entire 6 day stay.

Our stay at The Cartwright hotel in downtown San Fransisco was absolutely amazing. From our arrival to our departure from the room to the staff. The concierge upon our arrival was great! He was very attentive and had a great suggestion for our transit back from the airport later. Also the front desk person was very welcoming and helpful. He was able to get us checked in a bit early, and they were able to hold our bags since the room wasn't ready yet. The room was very clean and updated but still had the nostalgic feel. It was a very classy remodel and the rooms were quiet and cozy(we were on the 8th floor.) And of course it is in a great location at a great price. Also upon departure they were able to offer a late check out and also hold our bags until about 7p (we had a red eye flight that night) I would HIGHLY recommend anyone going to San Fransisco to stay at this hotel, and if we ever go back I will make it a priority to stay here again. Great job to the staff and to the management team for having a greatly run hotel.

Nice friendly greeting on arrival. Quick check in. A deposit is required. Room was spacious with plenty of power and USB points/TV/Coffee maker/alarm clock/radio. Bathroom is compact but has everything you need, lovely fluffy white towels. Very comfortable bed. Good shower pressure and ample hot water.Great location close to shops/bars/restaurants/transport links. You can catch the Cable car at the corner of the block. Just a few blocks from Union Square. Walgreens/7Eleven across road. Josh the concierge was very helpful in finding me a ticket for Alcatraz at short notice. (Thank you). All the staff very friendly. Would highly recommend this hotel.

We greatly appreciate your amazing review of the Cartwright Hotel Union Square! We certainly try to keep the rooms stocked with everything you'd need for a comfortable stay. We couldn't be happier with how impressed you were by our hotel. Our location is definitely a great added bonus! Thank you so much for your compliments of our staff, I'll pass the message along to them. Thanks for spreading the word about us and we can't wait to have you here again!

"Funky, functional"

08/06/2018

The hotel staff was terrific. The lobby has old school San Francisco charm. The rooms are small and have what you need. The remodeling brings modern updates to wearing interiors. Bathroom is tiny and the open closet vanity area supplements. While modest size, the shower is very good. Valet parking is expensive! Will consider staying here again. Hotel price is reasonable for SF and the location quite good.

Steven V, Manager at The Cartwright Hotel - Union Square, BW Premier Collection, responded to this review
Thank you for reviewing the Cartwright Hotel Union Square! I'm glad to hear our staff is "terrific" and that you appreciated our old San Francisco charm, as they are both things we take pride in. We hope that you do stay here again next time you are in San Francisco!

This is a wonderful hotel. It is located close to Union Square and China Town. This is an older 8 story hotel. It has been renovated and is now owned by Best Western. The rooms are small. However, great things come in small packages. We had the queen size room. Plenty of plugs, USB ports, super comfortable bed and pillows, big closet with large mirror that lights up with push of a button in the mirror, glass enclosed shower with no tub, very clean and quiet are some of the great features. The lobby is a great place for people to gather. Many different seating areas are available. My favorite was the area near the gas log fireplace. The concierge, whose name is Rene, was very helpful and friendly. If you are going to sightsee, you need to talk to him. He has deals on tours and advice on which to take. They also arranged for our transportation to SFO airport which was only a 30 minute drive.

"Rude hotel clerk"

1
03/06/2018

Perfect location for shopping, close to Union Square and Chinatown. The Cartwright hotel has nice and clean hotel rooms, the downside of the trip is when the hotel clerk was angry because we polite declined the taxi he proposed. That definitely ruined the stay at the hotel.

Steven V, General Manager at The Cartwright Hotel - Union Square, BW Premier Collection, responded to this review
Hi Quezo73, Thank you for providing us with great feedback. My apologies for any missteps related to the confusion over the taxi. I sent you a private message in hopes of getting further details. Cheers, Steven Viscio General Manager

"Cozy, Affordable, and Convenient"

30/05/2018

I stood there with my 80 year old mother and the staff could not have been any more friendlier, welcoming, and helpful in every way possible. The location is excellent; near all forms of transportation, shopping, food, lounges for night life but just secluded enough where you are not overwhelmed with tourists. The front desk staff and concierge will go out of their way to recommend restaurants, shopping, routes, tours, etc. You will not go wrong staying at this hotel.

"Great Stay"

25/05/2018

I liked my experience with Best Western-Cartwright. The staff were attentive and friendly. The hotel was located a few blocks from Union Square--close enough to have access to all the shopping and sights, but far away enough the street was not overwhelmed with tourists (in contrast to Powell Street). My visit was business related and the hotel is located close enough to the business district that I could walk to my appointments within 10 minutes. My only caveat is: my room faced Sutter, Street and I could hear the street/traffic noise (car horn blaring); however, this did not bother me. But for travelers who are light sleepers you may want to request a room not facing Sutter Street. I would recommend this hotel to anyone looking for an affordable, clean and friendly place to stay near SF's Union Square.

"This is a great hotel!"

23/05/2018

Perfect location, front desk employees are so friendly and helpful with recommendations. Only a few steps off of Union Square. Because it's between two other buildings room are very quiet. Be forewarned the rooms are very "cozy" - but no carpet (at least in my room). I loved that - no worries about what is in the carpet against your bare feet. The bathroom was so tiny! You literally had to go out of the room to change your mind! Luckily in the closet (which is almost as big as the bathroom) there was a little dressing table with a great mirror to blow dry hair and put on makeup. The only issue I have is no ice machines. Every time you want ice you have to get a bucket from the front desk. Oh - and coffee in the lobby. There were quite a few of us traveling on business and leaving the hotel before 6:30 and coffee was not avaibale until 7 am. I've already booked my next stay here!

"US road trip"

21/05/2018

Had a three night stay here was ideally located for union square. The room was however a little small so not much room to move around,, as we were out all day exploring the sites it was not too bad. The staff were very friendly and we had quite a laugh with them. Just a couple of doors away was a lovely diner where they did lovely breakfasts and evening meals.

"Great location for exploring"

4
21/05/2018

We loved our stay here, the rooms feel quite homely (if a little on the small side), lovely and clean with touches of character. We walked a lot around San Fran and this hotel was perfectly central for all our needs. It's about 30 mins walk to fisherman's wharf (don't forget the hills are steep though!) but it's closer to financial district, 7 eleven is right opposite for convenience, as well as about 5 mins if that from China town.

"Convenient Stay "

4
16/05/2018

Stayed here last month for our last night in San Francisco. Property is literally around the corner from Union Square so it's super convenient. Older property which had been renovated. Rooms are super small but with so much to do and see in San Francisco we didn't spend a lot of time in the room. Staff was incredibly efficient as well as friendly.

"Nice location....but so noisy!!!"

3
14/05/2018

Luckily I was travelling alone as there was no way 2 people were fitting either in the room OR the bed which was a tiny "double". You couldn't swing a cat in there. The bathroom was minuscule, I stubbed my toe dozens of times as you have to turn around constantly in a very small space to get to the sink, toilet, shower. Not good. The location is really nice as it is not far from Union Square. I walked to Moscone Centre every day as I had a conference there; for me it was a fine walk - not too far. There was a tiny little "couch" in the room which I kinda liked but after a while it was not really comfortable. There is no bar in this hotel but the staff will get you an ice bucket if you ask at reception. Thursday, Friday, Saturday nights are awful! The noise was unbelievable. At one point I thought someone was playing giant mikado with steel poles just outside my room. Then the drunk people came back; falling into my room door, shouting down the corridors........I hardly slept those 3 nights. We had a team meeting here and to be honest the room was not great. It is on the ground floor and there are no windows. I had to take time during breaks to go outside to get some sun and fresh air. The lunch provided was really good though. All-in-all I think you can probably get a better hotel for the same price.

Molly G, Front Office Manager at The Cartwright Hotel - Union Square, BW Premier Collection, responded to this review
Dear Fiona, Thank you for taking the time to provide your feedback. On behalf of our entire team, I would like to apologize for not exceeding your expectations. We are a 104 year old quintessential boutique hotel, and while we find it gives us a unique and historical charm, we realize that it can be underwhelming for some. However we feel that are amazing location and friendly staff make up for our size. While we do encourage you to stay with us again for a chance to provide you with a superior experience, we also understand that boutique hotels are not for everyone. Being in downtown San Francisco, it can unfortunately get a bit noisy and there is nothing we can do about the street noise except offer our guests complimentary earplugs which we have available at the desk. We don't not usually have commotion in the hallways over typical weekends but as you did stay over cinco de mayo weekend we sincerely apologize if other guests got a bit out of hand with their noise level. However, just to let you know the desk is available 24 hours a day and would have done their best to get the noise you were experiencing outside your room under control if you had called the desk to make a noise complaint. Once again we apologize that your stay was less than satisfactory and we do hope you will consider staying us again in the future.

"Expected more very disappointed"

12/05/2018

Hotel was nice and is in a great Central location. That being said, front desk service was horrible. We called in advance the day before to see if we could possibly check in early since our flight arrived at 8AM and check in wasn't until 3PM. There was no attempt to try to do anything for us. We were told they would contact house keeping and call when it was ready. We called back twice after that throughout the day only to get hung up on TWICE! The third time we finally didn't get hung up on they said that housekeeping was on lunch and had to wait until 3PM. (This was around noon) This hotel lacks sincerity, empathy and quality customer service. Oh and house keeping came knocking on our door the next morning at 9AM so seems like they were available during that time after all.

Molly G, Front Office Manager at The Cartwright Hotel - Union Square, BW Premier Collection, responded to this review
Dear Ismael, On behalf of the entire team I would like to apologize for not meeting your expectations. As check in is at 3pm, it is never guaranteed that we will be able to check in any guest early, however we do our best to accommodate when we can. The housekeepers have many rooms to service each day (including guests already in house) so yes, while they were working during that time they can't always get rooms ready before 3 pm. Although, I do see that your party had 3 separate reservations for 3 different rooms and we were able to get not only one, but all 3 rooms checked in early by 2:30 pm. As check in is 3 pm, like most other hotels, being able to get three rooms checked in early is quite accommodating. Regarding your comment about being hung up on, we have two different phones at the desk and sometimes when we try an transfer a call from one phone to the other the call gets dropped. I truly apologize if your call was dropped but I am confident our staff would never intentionally hang up on any of our guests. Once again, we are sorry your stay was less than satisfactory and we hope you will consider staying with us again for a chance to provide you with superior experience.

"Good location, small rooms"

3
11/05/2018

DO not stay here if you have more than one person - the rooms are definitely not big enough for two, it fits a bed, small desk and that is about it. I have never stayed in a hotel room so small! The hotel was clean and everything seemed nice, just extremely small. I stayed here for a work conference down at Moscone Center and it is a little far walk for that, but it is right at Union Square which is nice.

Molly G, Front Office Manager at The Cartwright Hotel - Union Square, BW Premier Collection, responded to this review
Dear Kiersten, As we are a 104 year quintessential boutique hotel, our rooms tend to run a bit small. They are perfect for one person but most can comfortably sleep two, and we do have different room types available that are more accommodating for two or more people. While we have a relatively small footprint, we do feel that are friendly staff and amazing location make up for our size. We appreciate your feedback and hope that you will consider staying with us again in the future for a chance to provide you with a superior experience.

"Good hotel, good location"

09/05/2018

Wasn't really looking forward to this hotel after reading some of the reviews. However, I needn't have worried. Staff checked me in quickly and answered any questions I had. Although my room was on the smaller side it had been recently been refurbished and the toilet was on the small side too. The corridors have pipes running along the roof which are painted gray and in my opinion this makes it look dark. The hotel is a really old but well kept. The free coffee and tea each morning was a nice touch. The hotel sits just of Union Square with a supermarket right across the road. The cable car stops at the end of the street. There is restaurants and a Starbucks really close too.

06/05/2018

Stayed two nights in the Cartwright and must say this is a very pleasant hotel. Conveniently located to the best shops and not far from the BART which is a direct line from SAN Francisco Airport. Our room was a small twin bedded room, small bathroom shower only. Rooms are very clean, good shower and large wardrobe. Happy to stay here should I return my only criticism is the noise from the rooms next, corridors and outside is a little too excessive but considering the price paid for our two night stay we were more than happy.

"Excellent value for the price!"

4
02/05/2018

The BW Cartwright Hotel in Union Square is reasonably priced compared to other hotels in the area! It is old, the rooms are small and the hotel does not have amenities (like room service, restaurant, pay-for-TV movies, etc.), but the service staff are all excellent and it's location is very close to Union Square. Overall, I would definitely stay here again!

"Nice hotel, convenient location"

4
28/04/2018

Very nice hotel with friendly staff. Rooms were clean and comfortable but a little small, especially the bathroom. Coffee and tea provided downstairs in the common area in the morning. Staff pretty knowledgeable about restaurants in the area.

"Overall good hotel "

28/04/2018

We stayed here for a week. Hotel lobby welcoming they had an open fireplace when we arrived at 11pm lots of seating downstairs. Room decor modern and homely. It's about a 30min walk to fisherman's wharf. And a block away from union square. Cable car is only one min walk down street Just a few cons: -there is no safe or mini fridge in the room -house keeping starts coming around at 8 in the morning you can hear them knocking on doors when your trying to sleep. -the bathroom is quite small. we had to step out of the bathroom to dry ourselves as the toilet is right next to the shower.

"Great Experience"

25/04/2018

For the location the hotel is worth it. Recently bought by Best Western and renovated. Staff was great and rooms were clean. Keep in mind this is San Francisco so rooms are small but they are new and have everything you need. Will definitely stay here next time we are in the city.

"Grant Plaza Hotel ??? I Left My Heart in San Francisco"

21/04/2018

I have always wanted to go to San Francisco. I took my daughter during spring break. We stayed for 3 of our 7 nights at the Grant Plaza Hotel. The rooms are little small but they're Cozy and have a boutique feel. The staff are Pleasant This hotel is well-kept and has a old-time feel to it that is inviting and comfortable. Anytime I go back to San Francisco I will definitely be staying here again. The hotel sits just inside the gate to Chinatown so it is convenient and close to the cable cars. There are a few restaurants across the street and close by if you get hungry and don't want to travel far. I felt safe being there just with my daughter and myself. Thank You to Staff at The Grant0k Plaza Hotel for making our stay in San Francisco and enjoyable and relaxing.

"Great service, contemporary boutique rooms in a fantastic location ."

16/04/2018

After a very mediocre experience at the Sir Francis Drake Hotel down the street, we were delighted by the great service at the Cartwright Hotel! The rooms creatively make the most of the limited space with contemporary design, great layout and a boutique feel. A very relaxing place to spend four nights in San Francisco. You can't ask for a better location, near Union Square and the Cable Cars on Powell Street . Highly recommend the Cartwright!

"Great stay"

02/04/2018

We stayed here for 5 nights and found the hotel to be in such a great position. Easy walks into china town, union square and the nearby Westfield. The staff were great and always there to ask for any help. Wifi was great and worked consistently. The rooms were small but we liked how neat and tidy they were so it was no issue. Overall I would recommend this hotel to everyone I know who is going to visit San Francisco !!!

"Moderately priced hotel in a good location"

22/03/2018

Expensive as is everywhere at this time of year, however, centrally located and convenient for getting around. Rooms we're fine, and staff were helpful. No in room dining available, but plenty of places to eat within a 5 minute radius.

"Really enjoyed our stay."

18/03/2018

We loved our stay here. The staff were very friendly and helpful, and we had a lovely warm welcome whenever we entered the building. Thanks especially to Rene and Edward for their help. The location is excellent, near bus/cable car stops to various parts of the city, a BART station, and 24 hour food/pharmacy stores on opposite side of road. Also very close to Union Square and great shops, and we walked from the hotel to the Ferry Building and SFMOMA. As has been mentioned, this is an older hotel, so don't expect modern rooms. I am from the UK, so I am used to smaller rooms and this was not an issue. The ceiling fan/TV/fridge and hair drier all worked fine. The bathroom appeared a good size. Nice walk in shower, no bath. The whole apartment was very clean throughout our stay. No breakfast provided, but we loved going out to breakfast at Sears, which is close by, or Union Square for a coffee and croissant outside. There was a small coffee maker in the room. The only downside was noise at night, but I think this was due to being in the city centre. For us, the closeness to amenities and feeling of being at the heart of a beautiful city more than made up for this. As always, it depends what you want from a hotel, but we really enjoyed our stay.

"Amazing Location, Paper Thin Walls"

3
14/03/2018

We stayed here for 2 nights and while the location is amazing, the hotel is incredibly noisy. We had a room away from the elevators and facing away from the street, however the walls are paper thin and you can hear absolutely everything. The room itself was well appointed and cosy and fine for 2 adults. A massive shoutout to Mari on the front desk though! She was incredibly welcoming, friendly and so professional and is such an asset to the hotel. Location is definitely a 10/10 and the staff were great; but probably wouldn't stay here again due to the noise.

Molly G, Front Office Manager at The Cartwright Hotel - Union Square, BW Premier Collection, responded to this review
Thank you for taking the time to review the Cartwright Hotel Union Square. First, I would like to thank you for your compliments of our cozy rooms and especially for your compliments of our staff! Our staff strive to provide a pleasant stay for all of our guests and I will definitely share your kind words with Mari. Secondly, I would like to apologize that the noise had a negative impact on your stay, it is especially too bad since you seemed to enjoy everything else about your stay here with us. Unfortunately, being in downtown San Francisco, while it is an excellent location, it can get quite noisy. While there isn't anything we can do about the street noise, we do our best to keep the noise within the hotel to a minimum. I'm not sure if you made a noise complaint to the front desk, but I wanted to let you know that someone is available 24 hours to assist you with issues such as that. We also offer complimentary earplugs at the front desk upon request. I hope that with this new information you will consider staying with us again for a chance to provide you with a superior experience, as we would be thrilled to have you back.

The front desk agents working in the evening were very helpful and happy people. The location is a big plus! Very very close to union square and easy to get around other locations such as Fisherman's Wharf. The room was very small, difficult for two people with luggage to fit. Bathroom is very small too. Overall the room was clean and the size could be perfect for single travellers. The money paid is only for the location, not the rooms and services. Parking is expensive in whole San francisco, and also at this hotel. It is not on site, parked one block away in a lot in cooperation with the hotel. Keep in mind that there is no breakfast included in the price. There are plenty of breakfast places around the hotel. If you are looking for a good location hotel then this is a 4/5 hotel for you. If you are looking for comfort and modern interior inside the hotel, perhaps this isn't the hotel for you.

"Location, location, oh, and friendly staff!"

If you're looking for a convenient place to stay near Union Square, look no more! The common rooms are lovely. One can relax by a warm fireplace, chat with friends, or play a board game. Beds are comfy, rooms very clean, bathrooms equipped with all you could want. Ok, rooms may be a bit small, but did you come to the city to sit in your room? If so, go by the fireplace or sit in a chair in the spacious lobby! The front desk staff (Rebecca) suggested a fine place for lunch, was friendly and helpful. Same with the fellow who parked our car. What more can I say except that I hope to return soon!

Very small room but clean and comfortable. Lots of noise from neighbors and from outside (that's San Francisco). Employee very helpful and friendly. Very very close to Union Square, the cable car and the trolley on Market.

"Excellent base for 3 days in SFO"

Very helpful staff, safe neighbourhood, loved the warm fire and reception on our return each evening. Plenty of nearby food places from 7-11 across the road to upmarket restaurants. Perfect sized room, clean and nocely presented, hot showers, comfy bed, quiet hotel aside from a little outside noise occasionally but hey, you're in the centre of San Fran and cities are busy!!  Loads or transport options within a 3 min walk including city tours. No hidden costs.  Would definitiely stay here again.

"Smaller rooms, Great location"

The rooms in this hotel are small and minimalist but are perfect for my type of traveling. Definitely designed for you travelers who want to explore the city all day and come back to a comfortable bed to sleep. This hotel is also a perfect location for shopping and restaurants in union square. Overall it was a comfortable and easy stay in the middle of the city.

"Noisy no sleep"

This was the loudest room I've ever stayed in. They should tell you before booking or at check in. No air conditioning either and you can't open the windows because of the noise. Also someone can crawl across the fire escape from another into your room if the window is open. I don't think they even locked. The 7 eleven is a hub of activity all night out the window. The front rooms should be used for storage if you can't add air conditioners per the city.

Molly G, Front Office Manager at The Cartwright Hotel - Union Square, BW Premier Collection, responded to this review
Dear Wounderlust2000, We are disappointed to hear that your stay with us was less than satisfactory. We sincerely apologize that the air conditioning was not working in your room, we were not aware it wasn't working properly. By any chance, did you let the front desk know? We would have been happy to send someone to fix it if we had been made aware. Unfortunately there is not much we can do about the street noise outside, however we do have rooms that are not facing the street that are quieter, and we always do our best to accommodate room moves or requests for a quiet room upon check in. We also offer complimentary earplugs at the desk for our noise sensitive guests. We hope you find these to be reasonable solutions and would consider staying with us again to give us the opportunity to provide you with a superior experience.

"Nice staff - Older hotel"

09/02/2018

I stayed at this hotel as part of a business trip, my work site was at the Philip Burton Federal Building off of Golden Gate avenue, roughly a mile away. Location wise this hotel is central to shops and restaurants. Everything you could need within a 1 mile walking distance to include a Walgreens and grocery store with fresh produce. The staff here is friendly and no issues there. My only issues were that there wasn't a mini fridge or A.C.. The A.C. wasn't that big of a deal not to have buy maybe an issue for some. Overall ok hotel, wouldn't stay here again.

"Excellent location with excellent service"

Located in Union square close to many great places to eat and access to easy transportation. No vehicle needed as everything was available by public transportation. Staff was extremely helpful in helping us with the questions we had about how to get to places and also with recommendations on foods and other activities.

"So Cute!!"

02/02/2018

Loved this hotel!! I looked for hours for a hotel in San Francisco that wasn't going to charge me an arm and a leg for a one night stay and parking, and finally landed on this place. I couldn't be happier! They check us in early, which was awesome after a long morning of flying, and recommended a great place to eat lunch. The room was super tiny, which I expected from reading the other reviews, but really cute and clean. You definitely won't feel like you are staying in a chain hotel - it has a very trendy, vintage vibe. We walked almost everywhere from this location too: China Town, Pier 39, Ghiradelli Square, Union Square. The only downfall of the hotel is that the rooms are not super quiet. I'm good with city noises, but a couple of drunk guests came stumbling in at 1AM one night yelling at each other, and were loud enough to wake me up. Beyond that, this is a great hotel for an extremely reasonable price. Highly recommend!!

"Solid old hotel in a great location"

Our room was quiet but quite small. The Ike hotel has a real charm. Loved the fireplace in the alcove but it was on too high to sit near - just too hot! Other than that, the rest is the lobby was neat and clean.

I really liked the Cartwright! Wanted a hotel in Union Square within walking distance to a pop-up museum (The Color Factory across the street) Great check-in process-friendly staff and valet parking was a total breeze. Beautiful lobby with several sitting areas and a lovely fire going in the back lobby. I was on the 7th floor and could see the tip of the Transamerica Building from the window. Top notch toiletries and super plush towels. No bathroom fan but the window opened so that was nice. I understand it's an older hotel so the rooms are pretty small but the vibe is good. REALLY liked all the outlets for phone charging-so important these days. The germ free/sanitized TV remote was something I hadn't seen before! Nice! Only thing I noticed was sloppy spackle and paint in the bathroom and rust on some of the fixtures but I give it a "10" for the very pleasant stay overall. No fridge or microwave but the coffee maker worked. There wasn't an ice machine or a bucket in the room but asked at the front desk and the associate brought me a full bucket. Checking out was cool cause while the valet was getting my car, the concierge gave me directions to the Golden Gate bridge. I'd happily stay here again.

"Glad I Tried the Cartwright"

30/01/2018

I now have to travel to this location often for work. After not liking a previous hotel I stayed at in the area, I decided to try the Cartwright. I'm glad I did. My room had a decent view but most importantly, it was clean, the beds were comfortable and there is a small window AC unit in which I could run the fan for white noise. That's pretty rare in SF. My bathroom was tiny but it had a nice sliding glass door in the shower and a huge mirror in one of the closets. The room itself, I felt was a decent size for just me. The location is nice too. It's walking distance to Market St and many places to grab food or coffee. There's a Walgreens, Starbucks, and 7-11 across the street. The staff is very friendly and there's a nice fireplace downstairs. There isn't continental breakfast but they have coffee and tea. I'll definitely stay here again.

"Friendly staff, beautiful fireplace in lobby"

27/01/2018

This hotel is convenient, clean, and charming. Room was small, but that's typical for SF. Nice views from 8th floor room. Staff was very nice, free coffee in lobby was good. Pretty fireplace area off lobby.

20/01/2018

Just up from Union Square (5 minutes) lies the Cartwright. We had two rooms and both were very small and the bathrooms tiny. Don't be fooled by pictures, they've been taken with a very wide angle lens. Comfortable beds, coffee maker in the room, free tea and coffee in the morning till 11am. Corridor to room feeling a bit tired. Rooms well equipped, nice organic toiletries, plenty of towels and wifi worked well.

"Cozy, in a great location"

10/01/2018

Our room was small. However, it was very clean and comfortable for my partner and I. Very comfortable bed with a good size TV. It was in a great location as well, being within walking distance to restaurants, cafes, shops and attractions. Only a short drive to Pier 39. Would recommend.

08/01/2018

We stayed at the hotel for 7 nights over the New Year. We had looked at reviews of several other hotels in the close vicinity but finally decided on the Cartwright as it seemed a fair price and the photos looked good. When were arrived we were delighted, the Hotel is located right on Union Square and so is in the centre of all of the activity, restaurants, shops, cable cars etc. We were greeted by very welcoming reception staff who checked us in quickly and efficiently, making us feel at ease straight away. We had requested a quieter room so were given a room on the 8th floor. In this room you could hardly guess that you were in the centre of a bustling city! We were really pleased when we got to the room to find a clean, up to date and inviting bedroom. The size of the room was on the smaller side but we had no problem with this as all we used the room for was to sleep after long days discovering the city and what it had to offer. The shower room was clean and modern. Our rooms were cleaned and tidied everyday, inc, New Years Day. The only thing that we could have used was possibly a small fridge. There were a couple of nights where a few noisy party goers kept us awake on their return for a short while, but I suppose this is to be expected at this time of year and didn't ruin our stay...(we were all young once!) Tea and coffee was served near Reception in the morning, and we used this a couple of times before early day trips. Whenever we had a question or query the staff were always polite, friendly and informative. We would happily recommend the hotel, which has lots of character and was an ideal base for discovering the city...We hope to return one day!

Nice stay, cleanliness of the room itself is the only thing I would comment on. It was in a great location in Union Square. Not many parking options for the hotel itself but plenty of garages around. No breakfast ??

Molly G, Front Office Manager at The Cartwright Hotel - Union Square, BW Premier Collection, responded to this review
Thank you for taking the time to review the Cartwright Hotel Union Square. We are pleased you enjoyed your stay, however a bit unsure what you mean regarding the cleanliness of our rooms. Our rooms are serviced everyday and we make sure to always keep them fresh and clean for your comfort. Aside from self parking in the garage, we do offer valet service to park in the garage for you if you'd like. Although we do not have breakfast, we do offer complimentary coffee and tea every morning and can suggest one of the many great places to get breakfast (and more) within a very short walking distance. This is attributed to our unbeatable location! We hope you will be back to stay with us again soon.

Great place to stay. Just a block from the trolley stop. Staff were very nice and helpful. Room was very clean and modern. Great location to everything. We stayed for 4 nights. This hotel has so much character. Get a muni pass and see the city. The trolley is a great way to get around. Don't over pay at other hotels. Great hotel for a great price.

"Excellent Location"

03/01/2018

Awesome location on Union square. We could walk to the Union square, restaurants, shops etc. The place had its old world charm. The rooms and bathrooms were a bit small and there was no breakfast in the morning (only tea/coffee). But we used our promotion offer of 10,000 points for the room so we were very happy with the hotel.

"Excellent location, somewhat smaller rooms"

01/01/2018

Friendly front desk staff, and central location next to Union Square. However, rooms are on the smaller side for other comparable hotels in the area. Note that they do not provide breakfast any longer and tea/coffee is provided only in the mornings.

Beautiful staff ! smaller rooms than some places but very close to union square and the Cheesecake Factory ! The newly spruced up rooms are fresh and pretty with super comfy beds! We met 2 of the most beautiful people that work here, with all the knowledge of where to eat & what to see. Edward and Tony you are two very valuable people to the Cartwright and we both wish you all the very best and hope to maybe see you again one day. The staff will go above and beyond to help you out in what ever you need just remember they appreciate manners too just like we do :) Lots of love Dani & Alan x

28/12/2017

The location of the hotel is fantastic - 2 minutes walk from Union Square. With that does come some road noise so request a room away from the road. The hotel is nice, very friendly and helpful staff. Everything was clean and neat. The rooms are on the smaller size but do still have everything you need. Overall we were satisfied.

The staff, location and price were Great. but it needs upgrades and the internet description needs to be updated...No Room Service! I doubt I will stay here again but it was a good value. If you are a large person please mention this when you are making reservations, the bathroom I had was very, very small, and I am an average size male

"Christmas fun"

27/12/2017

We chose to stay in this hotel because it was in the heart of the action of central San Francisco. We were able to walk to all the major stores and enjoy the Christmas decorations. It was also center to entertainment and restaurants. It provided a comfortable environment in a big city atmosphere.

We stayed here a few days during the holiday. The hotel is a great location with a very friendly staff and so hopeful .We stayed at best western's a lot and found this one very nice. The rooms are small but clean , but this is San Francisco and the charm of the hotel is priceless. I have stayed at a few other small hotels around union square and this one was one of the top. They are a lot of restaurant in the area . We ate at Lori 's diner next store and I did think it was the good. There is a trader joes food store a few blocks away for snacks and misc. the hotel only has coffee and tea in the morning from 7 to 10 , no breakfast. There is a Starbucks at the corner . You can make coffee in the room . I would stay here again.

21/12/2017

I arrived at this hotel on 16 Dec, stayed for 1 night. I was booked on the queen size bed room. When I enter the room, the room was very small, and to my Suprise the AC was only producing fan, not cool air. The bed was good though. And the location is only 1 block away from Union Square. I think that is why lots of people tend to choose this hotel. By the corner of the street, there's a Diner, Walgreens and across the street there's a 711. Do not choose valet if you are bringing your car, there's a cheaper parking space around the corner.

"Amazing hotel!"

Stayed here for a few days and I must say- great location and great staff and service. The room we got was small but modern and clean and it was a big help having a big wardrobe to put out luggage in. Our bell boy was a great help and gave us lots of information about San Fran and the big bus tour. Loved the fireplace too even though it wasn't cold! We will be back

18/12/2017

This is one of the best hotel experiences I've had. Hotel staff was efficient and cheery, always willing to help. We were relaxing at day's end with a glass of wine in the lobby, and within minutes of asking a staff member if the gas fireplace could be ignited, they had a staff engineer on the problem, fixing it while we talked. Everything in the room was very clean, decorated simply and beautifully to fit the urban vibe. Hospitality staff in the hallway were always cheerful and helpful. Up on the 6th floor, street noise was minimum. A couple blocks from Union Square action makes this location ideal. We had a group stay, and I'd stay over and over in the future.

Amazing hotel and staff that make you feel like family. This 105 year old hotel is packed with history starting with a fire escape right outside the window. We stayed in a suite and had two rooms that were cozy and comfy. Perfect for our getaway retreat. Location was excellent and we were able to use cable car, bus or Bart to get everywhere we needed to go.

The best possible location, next to the cable cars, Union Square, and excellent restaurants. Comfort and peace at a reasonable price and with great guides and help for tourists. Even a 7-11 and a Walgreens across the street. and Lori's Diner next door, so quick take-outs and good breakfasts.

"Quaint Hotel with tons of History"

4
11/12/2017

We stayed at this hotel because of the history, plus the fact it was older and had character. The staff were so much fun, very helpful and made us feel like family. I loved the fact that there was the traditional fire escape outside our window... it added character to the hotel. You could feel the history as you sat by the fireplace, walked up the original staircase and got a taste of bygone days. Truly a wonderful experience. The only thing I would say, the hotel is 105 years old and the heating is steam. Sometimes it didn't work and got chilly but the staff brought blankets and a space heater. Wouldn't trade the experience!

Ronnie N, Front Office Manager at The Cartwright Hotel - Union Square, BW Premier Collection, responded to this review
Wow, I love that you really captured the spirit of our hotel! "Good for solo, flexible traveler looking to enjoy downtown SF"

08/12/2017

Overall a nice stay. Hotel itself has a historic feel while the rooms are clean and updated. Not a huge room so fine for solo travel or people used to sharing space. Not a great view but I didn't mind since I spent most of my time out of the room. Great location for Union Square, Chinatown, Financial District, etc. Close to some great breakfast/dinner places. It is very central so allow extra time if you are planning to use a ride service during a busy time of the day.

07/12/2017

My room at the Cartwright Hotel was small, but clean and perfect for my needs. Knew I wouldn't be hanging out at the hotel, so room size was fine. I was a little challenged by the bathroom mirror, too short to see myself. Thank goodness there was a full length mirror in the room. Price was right, so I would stay again.

A charming botique hotel located only steps from union square shopping and the heart of the city. Friendly staff and well designed room made for a comfortable stay. Although the bathroom is a touch too small for my taste everything functioned perfectly and the bedroom design was very swanky. Overall an excellent choice and a great value for the money. Well done Best Western!

A very nice old hotel in comfortable walking distance from Powell St. Station, Union Square and cable cars. Service at front desk and concierge was more than excellent. Everyone was very helpful. 30/11/2017

My husband and myself stayed here for 1 night whilst visiting the city. The hotel is in a great location with easy access to the train station and trams. It's easy accessible to Union Square which is vibrant and great for shopping! The hotel itself is Great! Small rooms but clean and cosy. The bathroom is very tiny but again, it's clean. Staff are friendly and welcoming. Concierge helped us out with bus tour tickets and kept hold of our bags when we checked out and wanted to carry on exploring. Your only sleeping in the room so if it's a clean, friendly and central hotel you are looking for then the Cartwright is for you!

"Comfortable and Good Location"

4
27/11/2017

We stayed here for 4 nights and we thoroughly enjoyed our stay. The location was great only 5 blocks away from the train station which has easy links to the airport. The room its self was small but very clean and comfortable and had all the amenities needed. The bathroom was a little on the small side but this is due to the age and layout of the building and caused no problems at all. Staff were all very friendly and helpful and was able to answer all our questions easily. The fact there was no breakfast did not bother us as there is a supermarket directly opposite where you can purchase breakfast items at a reasonable cost. Overall I would recommend this hotel as it was a pleasure to stay here.

"Clean but outdated. No breakfast, just coffee/tea. "

26/11/2017

The hotel has an excellent location and is clean but it's also outdated. Personnel is really friendly. Keep in mind that there is no possibility to have breakfast at the hotel. There are a lot of breakfast opportunities nearby, but just keep in mind that breakfast isn't included in the price.

"Cost-Effective and a Pleasure"

Perfect place for us. We enjoyed the convenience to Union Square. Our room was superior in cleanliness. We parked our car in the hotel's garage and walked and Ubered everywhere. The staff is above average in friendliness and helpfulness. Beyond the lobby is a wonderful area to relax when you are shopped out. Mattress was great! Not a single complaint.

The Cartwright is an awesome hotel; it's clean and the staff and lovely and helpful; Kevin in reception deserves a shout out as he went over and above for us. The room was a tad small but was clean and had everything you needed; a great shower and comfy bed. Free and unlimited morning coffee and tea was a blessing. Centrally situated and quiet, we would 100% recommend this hotel. Stayed beginning of Sep 2017. Thanks guys

20/11/2017

The check in process was very easy and quick. The room was very clean and it was a quiet hotel. Only thing that was needed was a bigger mirror. The only one that was in the room was the bathroom mirror. Also, the room was relatively small but that is expected when staying in SF. The location was great! walking distance to everything! My overall experience was great and I would stay again!

EXCELLENT bed. Nice room overall. Tiny sink. Very good shower. TV terrible. Some windows not functional. Would highly recommend to someone who wants a very functional & comfortable hotel in San Francisco for a reasonable price

Staying at The Cartwright Hotel is a must for those looking for a great location at a great price. Quaint and historic, this is a gem of a hotel. The staff go over and beyond to make your stay the best. We would stay here again in a heartbeat.

"Perfect small hotel in the center of Union Square activities"

Feel of a budget boutique but attention to detail of a 4 star chain. Perfect option for those who aren't in their room a lot but want to feel refreshed when they do come back. The small details of maximizing room space were very clever.

"Great Hotel, Staff, Location & Pricing"

The staff at the Cartwright are some of the best I've encountered anywhere. From check-in, to follow up by staff during my stay, to great interactions with the concierge, each and every member of this hotel staff is polite, professional, friendly and concerned about their guests enjoyment of their stay. The hotel itself is centrally located in San Francisco (a couple blocks off of Union Square), near good restaurants, public transportation and is in a good neighborhood. Parking ($35/night self park) for the hotel is one block away, and is secure. Hotel staff will validate and bill you through your room bill if you wish. The rooms have been completely overhauled, are modern and very well appointed. The beds are comfortable and amenities upscale. I have stayed in multiple hotels in SF for business, but this will become my go-to hotel from now on. The rates for the quality can't be matched anywhere else I've seen in SF. The only thing I'd say, is if you don't like white noise, get a room not on the street. SF is a busy, bustling city, even at night. No matter how good the windows, there will be noise.

"Cozy place with nice location"

I stayed for 4 nights here with my wife for sightseeing purpose. The location is quite good, convenience store and drug store just across the street, Starbucks and cable car/bus station just around the corner. 3 mins walk to union square. My room at top floor and face the main street so got a nice view. My room doesn't have A/C but with ceiling fan so it's ok for me(outside temp around 12C), but not sure about the summer time how they improve the inside temp? Oh they serve free coffee from 7-10am at lobby, that's a plus!

"Disappointment"

13/11/2017

Let's start with the goods stuff: small but very cute room with tv and free wifi. Room and bathroom were very clean. However, my room was facing a wall of another building which was very weird. I have never expected any hotel to have such 'views'. Moving on to the least pleasant elements. First thing I have spotted was quite rude staff. The lady who was serving me seemed like she didn't care if I was there or not. She couldn't even bother to take off the headphone set while talking to me. I had no idea if she was talking to me or someone on the phone, I wasn't sure if she acknowledged my presence every time when I got to the reception. Overall, if you are staying for one night - go ahead and book it but if you are planning to stay a bit longer, I would suggest paying maybe a bit more and staying somewhere else.

"What a gem! "

The rooms are small, no question about it. But the price is so reasonable for the location. And the staff is amazing!! Everyone was so welcoming. The hotel is clean and very well maintained. The bed and pillows were the best out of a two week road trip. Highly recommend.

I like the location and the décor, unfortunately my room was very small approx. 12' X 14' w/ a bath approx. toilet area approx. 2.5' wide. Ok for a small person but not for an average size person. that being said the service was very good and the staff pleasant.

Great location nice remodel, but staff struggles with dealing with any issue. Everything is close by and accessible without driving. Rooms are clean if not a little tight, but normal for the period of building. Staff is good until something unique comes up, then they struggle to adapt.

Very friendly staff, Kevin (I think that was his name) was very helpful with suggestions and directions and was engaging and pleasant. Hotel lobby and public spaces were warm and inviting and have an old school charm. Our room (shared by my sister and I) had 2 single beds. The room decor was nice, good linens and comfortable beds and offered free wifi and ports for cell phone chargers. The only negative (very minor) is that our room and bathroom was tiny, but I think for San Francisco this is common.

Hi tobeyf243, Thank you for staying at the Cartwright Hotel Union Square and for taking the time to complete a review. Your review captured the spirit of staying in a boutique hotel. Our rooms run small, but our location and service more than make up for the lack of square footage. I will be sure to share you comments with Kevin, he does an amazing job providing our guests with genuine service. Cheers, Steven Viscio General Manager

My husband and I stayed three nights at this hotel on an extended weekend. This is definitely a small boutique hotel and it had great charm. The staff was very friendly and accommodating, greeting us each time we came and left. The rooms were smallish but that is not unusual for a 100+ year old hotel. Our room was newly renovated and the decor tasteful. The bed was so comfortable with lots of pillows. This location for us was the best. It was a minute walk to the cable car and a block or so from the Union Square shopping and just a short walk to Chinatown. We will definitely stay here again.

Hi Tommi C, Thank you for being our guest at the Cartwright Hotel Union Square. We are so glad you experienced the charm that comes with staying at a boutique hotel. Our gem of a hotel is 104 years old. We may lack square footage, but we more thank make up for it with a friendly staff, a fresh new renovated room, and the best location in San Francisco. We hope to see again in the very near future. Follow us on our Facebook page and on our website CartwrightSF.com to see the latest specials. Cheers, Steven Viscio General Manager

Hotel is an older one and the accommodations aren't luxurious, but it's a great value (for San Francisco) in a great location, the staff is friendly, and everything in the room works fine. A bit noisy, but so is everywhere else in Union Square.

"Loved it!!!"

Stayed 3 nights. Friendly staff at the front desk!! We had a 2nd floor room looking out at Sutter street. Extremely comfortable bed...lots of pillows. All wood floor. Bathroom and shower were outstanding. This is a small older boutique style hotel with lots of charm. No AC in our room but it was not needed. The ceiling fan was perfect. This was our first time at the Cartwright and we absolutely loved it. Perfect location. Cable car stop is a 30 second walk away. The entire hotel was clean. At 730 am on Sunday we were woken up by a marching band playing the theme song from “Rocky”. The band was in full uniform in front of another hotel at the corner....it was awesome!!!! If you have not stayed in the Union Square area before....you will hear street noise (cable cars, vehicles, people singing, etc...). We think this is part of the charm of the city. If this bothers you, you may need to stay on the higher floors. Our stay here was awesome. Room was cleaned perfectly when we returned in the afternoon or evening. Short walk to Chinatown. Tons of restaurants/diners and bars within a short walking distance. Walgreens across the street. We cannot say enough about the Cartwright!!!

"Not a place to stay"

Bathrooms so small you couldn't move around. No breakfast offered as most do at Best Westerns Premier Hotes. Complete renovation needed. They should close hotel and renovate and start over. They took over for the old Cartwright hotel but haven't made the changes necessary to make it a nice place to stay.

I really enjoyed my stay with my friend. We booked this trip last minute to see a show at the Fillmore and we were nervous about what was available just a couple of days before we arrived. This hotel is in the heart of Union Square with many amenities close by. It is a short walk to public transportation and many of the museums. It is a good blend of an older hotel with modern considerations, internet etc. The staff are friendly and helpful. Although it is in the main downtown area, the noise level at night is quite low.

Steven V, General Manager at The Cartwright Hotel - Union Square, BW Premier Collection, responded to this review
Hi Barbara98116, Thank you for being our guest at the Cartwright Hotel Union Square. With the recent renovation we tried to keep some of the historical feel of our 104 year old gem of a hotel. Most importantly about 90% of our rooms have new windows, which has really cut down on the noise factor. That number will climb to 100% in the near future. We hope to see you on your next visit to San Francisco. Cheers, Steven Viscio General Manager

Displaced from my home due to flooding, I spent four nights at the Cartwright with my seven month-old puppy. The staff loved her, and there was no charge, just sign your life away she wouldn't bark (no problem there!) The room was small, but that's Union Square. Bed was amazingly comfortable, I actually fell asleep for an hour when I thought I was just resting my eyes on arrival. My only wish for them is to put in a mini fridge. Okay my second wish would be for a microwave. But again I was displaced and not on vacation or a business tab. It's a great historic hotel, well renovated, and most important to me, they loved the puppy!

Steven V, General Manager at The Cartwright Hotel - Union Square, BW Premier Collection, responded to this review
Hi Brian K, Thank you for finding the time to write a review of the Cartwright Hotel Union Square. With the flooding I am sure you had many things to handle on your to-do list, but you still found the time to offer your feedback. I hope all is well with your home and I hope we can be part of a future staycation. Of course we will always be here to assist if another emergency arises. The Best Western Cartwright Hotel at Union Square in San Francisco is very nice, clean, and conveniently located next to the famous San Francisco Trolley line. We were here for our son's wedding and dinner, nearby. The suite we booked was great, with the living room overlooking the street. Being on the 4th floor, noise was not an issue. The staff are polite and well dressed with sharp, clean uniforms The bedding was first class, with the best, most luxurious sheets I have ever slept on. Nice place.

Steven V, General Manager at The Cartwright Hotel - Union Square, BW Premier Collection, responded to this review
Hi Y437RGcaroll, Thank you for reviewing the Cartwright Hotel Union Square and congratulations to your son. Since we are located in the heart of the City it was great to read that noise was not a factor. The facade rooms will soon get new windows so the rooms will even be quieter. I will make sure to share your comment about the team and their uniforms. Cheers, Steven Viscio General Manager

"Good location, service and amenities in a historic property"

14/10/2017

My wife and I stayed for our wedding anniversary, and hotel management surprised us at check-in with an upgrade to a suite. (FWIW, I am a BW Diamond Customer, so that may have helped.) The service was top-notch all the way - they were available for questions and responded to requests immediately with a smile. It is a historic building, so we were expecting smaller rooms, but the suite was fantastic. It had a nice living room area with windows on two sides - it felt like our own apartment in the heart of San Francisco. Location is the other advantage of this hotel. You can step outside and see the cable cars going by, walk two blocks to Union Square or catch a taxi or public transportation to any other part of the city. There are a multitude of restaurants and bars within walking distance, which simplifies evening plans. When you factor in the price - better than many other hotels in the neighborhood - the Cartwright Hotel is an incredible value. We would definitely stay here again in the future.

Steven V, General Manager at The Cartwright Hotel - Union Square, BW Premier Collection, responded to this review
Hi bluestreak5, Thank you for the amazing review of the Cartwright Hotel Union Square. We are so glad we played a part in your wedding anniversary. I say we make this a yearly treat! I am quite certain there are many, many more restaurants and pubs to try in our neighborhood. Our location simply can't be beat. Everything is close and most importantly it is a safe area to walk. The suite is definitely a spacious room, but in the spirit of full transparency a majority of our rooms are rather small. Once again thank you for the review and for the loyalty to our brand. Cheers, Steven Viscio General Manager

13/10/2017

The Cartwright hotel is a boutique hotel in a really great location. Their rates are great for where they are, although the rooms are small and as long as you expect this and are aware of the small rooms then you shouldn't be disappointed. The rooms are spotless though and have mostly everything you would need for a short stay (no fridge though! Which was fine for us). The hallways could do with a bit of a facelift as they are rather dated, but the rooms are modern and clean! We stayed in a room at the Powell side and it was relatively quiet too. It is right off union square and close to all means of public transport, making it easy to get around. It is right off Powell St where the old cable car runs up and down to fishermans wharf and back (though prepare to queue for these!) there is a 24 he Walgreens across the street and a lovely diner on the corner too which is also 24 hrs. There is no bar or restaurant in the hotel but coffee is served every morning, this suited us as we always go out to eat. We also loved that this hotel is pet friendly! The staff we encountered were all lovely and helpful. We would not hesitate to stay here again for sure.

Starting with a great location just one block from Union Square and even closer to the cable car stop, this hotel does not disappoint when you get inside. The hotel is newly remodeled and very comfortable while retaining all of its charm as a vintage San Francisco building. The staff were so amazing and professional - anticipating every need and conducting their business with complete professionalism in a warm and caring manner. Highly recommend this hotel

05/10/2017

Looking for a hotel near Union Square? This hotel is a nicely updated quaint building and it is reasonably priced (relative to the other hotels in the area). But be prepared - quaint means compact. The room, bathroom, bed were all very good - just very compact (bathroom especially). We had a queen room - the main part of the room was as wide as the bed with nightstands (desk area & bureau beside the bed). There was a good size closet - and although the bathroom was just slightly bigger than the closet - it was updated. There is not a microwave or fridge and they do not have a breakfast - but there is a diner a few doors down and walking distance to a number of restaurants. I would recommend this hotel for the location, updating, & price.

Hi TheTravelingCs, Thank you for staying at the Cartwright Hotel Union Square and for giving us a Traveling4 (see what I did there). We appreciate the great feedback. We stayed at this hotel for a couple nights and were expecting something more if to be honest. Our room was on the 8th floor at the far back and was very small, had no fridge and had no bath, just a shower. The room was very clean and tidy though. We would like to say a big thank you to Kevin who gave us a good tip about Alcatraz and recommended a very good steak house! Overall experience was good and we'd probably get back here but will upgrade for a better room, shame it was our last few days of holiday and had no spare money this time.

Hi Alissa A, Thank you so much for taking the time to review the Cartwright Hotel Union Square. In the spirit of a true boutique hotel our rooms are unquestionably undersized. During our renovation we removed most of the tubs to provide a little more square footage in the bathroom. I appreciate you recognizing the housekeeping for their hard work and Kevin our concierge. He is a great ambassador for San Francisco. We hope to see you on your next visit. Please ask our team for a room with a tub and we will make it happen. Cheers, Steven Viscio General Manager

Stayed 2 nights in the hotel while in America. Great stay, lovely room with enough space for 2 of us and really lovely caring staff. A very shabby hotel with no facilities whatsoever. Tiny bathroom! Their motto was bring your own - food, drink (although no fridge in room to store anything), shower gel!!! I do not recommend this hotel.

Hi elaineball 10, Thank you for taking the time to review the Cartwright Hotel Union Square. I realize our hotel is not for everybody. We are a 104 year old boutique hotel with a relatively small footprint. Our rooms are small, but definitely not shabby. We do not promote lavish facilities. What we promote is clean renovated rooms, a friendly front desk, and the best location in San Francisco. A location that features world class shopping, amazing restaurants, and the historic cable car. All within a two block walk of the hotel. I am sorry our hotel did not meet up to your standards. 24/09/2017

The location of this hotel is great (approximately 3 minutes walk from Union Square). The rooms were a good size for the price and well maintained. THe staff were friendly, polite and helpful. Downsides were that the lift is often busy (just one lift and relatively small) and that they didn't have a bar or offer breakfast (they do have free coffee in the mornings though).

"Bad Value - Tiny rooms"

1
22/09/2017

The bedroom was no more than 10x10 with view of a brick wall 2 feet away. I've stayed in nicer rooms on the small side at hostels and definitely don't feel the room was worth the $200+ I paid. Wall AC unit, not built in. Easy to hear noise in the corridor without the AC on. Bathroom is in need of updating. I do not recommend this hotel to anyone.

Steven V, General Manager at The Cartwright Hotel - Union Square, BW Premier Collection, responded to this review
Hi NoBaggagePlease, Thank you for taking the time to review the Cartwright Hotel Union Square. Our hotel is a 104 year old quintessential boutique hotel. One of our main challenges during our recent renovation was the hotels small footprint. A majority of our rooms lack square footage, that being said you received one of the smallest rooms in the hotel. Our location is a challenge and a blessing. The challenge is since we are downtown we have buildings that surround three sides of the hotel. If you happen to get a room on the bottom floor you will definitely get a view of the next building. I apologize for the rust stains you saw on your bathroom floor. Your particular bathroom is one of our larger bathrooms in the hotel. During the renovation a water shut off was left open and we could not buff our the porous marble. The flooring is being addressed. Once again thank you for your feedback. My apologies for not providing you with a satisfactory stay. Best, Steven Viscio General Manager

"Cramped for space"

3
21/09/2017

We were a bit shocked when we walked into the room and saw how little space we had. Only one person at a time could walk around the room, the pathway was so small, and we are not overweight! No A/C; however there was a ceiling fan which helped. Locks on windows did not work! No screens, which I gather is standard for San Fran. And I was refused a receipt at stay's end. Yes I booked thru Travelocity but I still should have gotten a receipt from the location I stayed at.

"No refund."

No bar, no breakfast, due to renovations. No partial refund offered. Very disappointed. Had to ask for room change as first one was very small. Location good, staff friendly and helpful. Food might have been good, but there wasn't any !!

Hi Terry S, Thank you so much for your review of the Cartwright Hotel Union Square. I truly appreciate you mentioning both the positives and negatives of your experience. I apologize for the confusion regarding the bar and breakfast. Breakfast is in no way tied to our renovation. We do not offer breakfast currently and do not plan to offer breakfast in the future. We do not have a liquor license, that is why the bar is not operational. With so many amazing restaurants and bars in our immediate area we are debating the advantage of operating the bar. Thank you for mentioning our helpful and friendly staff. I am glad to read they were able to get you in a more comfortable room. Cheers, Steven Viscio General Manager

Overall a very nice hotel in a great location. Ok some parts of the hotel looked "tired" but not too bad. The room was small but comfortable and very clean. Bathroom again was small but we coped with it. Staff were excellent, very friendly and always happy to help with local information. The first room we were put in had a view of a brick wall, when we asked for a new room we were moved without any problems. For a short stay in San Francisco you could do a lot worse! Location was excellent.

My husband and I stayed here for 4 nights after visiting Las Vegas. To be quite honest, it was a huge disappointment compared to where we stayed in Vegas. The hotel has a fantastic location in Union Square, but the room was very small. The air conditioning was poor, therefore the room was very hot and stuffy, and there wasn't a safe. However, it was clean and staff were very welcoming and polite. I would recommend this hotel for the location but that's all.

good service and great customer service. the location is perfect close to everything. only bad thing is parking the hotel offers valet and say its 45 us dollars but its really 512 something after taxes. I would go back though.

We stayed at the Cartwright on the hottest day ON RECORD in San Francisco. We got lucky! They had a turbo air conditioner in the room! Not sure if we'd have stuck around without that. The room was clean and had a great shower. And of course, the location was primo. The staff was very friendly and accommodating. I'd stay there again, for sure!

Rather than paying big bucks for brand name hotels, I chose The Cartwright. It was literally around the corner from The Grand Hyatt and the location was just as good. Close to Union Square, Apple Store, Chinatown, cable car, and lots of shopping.

We stayed here as a group. The rooms are a little small but what the rooms lack in size the staff at the hotel make up for in service. The hotel is conveniently located in Union Square with all facilities within walking distance. The rooms are clean and modern and the staff are brilliant. Thanks to Kevin who works at front desk for going above and beyond on numerous occasions. I will definitely by staying at this hotel again in the future and recommending it to friends. Try Lori's diner, Sears Fine Foods and of course Golden Gate Tap Bar as great eating options located within 100m of hotel. Did I mention the cable car stops at nearly you front door. Thanks Cartwright Hotel for a wonderful holiday.

Hotel was clean, rooms were re furbished, every thing you need (i.e. coffee maker, hair dryer , large flat screen TV.etc.). Beds and pillows very comfortable. the staff were exceptionally helpful and friendly.. Recommend the valet parking. distance to the garage is a few blocks away and can be inconvenient. Service, comfort, ambience, location, and value: they were all here at the Cartwright. I have stayed at 40 hotels in The City and this hotel ranks at or near the top. The staff was attentive and personable, not the apathetic monotone robots of some properties. My room was small but intelligently renovated with a modern bathroom, including a glass-enclosed shower, and the air conditioning worked well. There was no significant noise from other guests or the street below. And what a great bed. I don't remember a better one in any hotel. The Cartwright felt old-fashioned in a positive way with attractive public spaces which date back some 100 years. But steps from the entrance I was in the heart of modern San Francisco: Union Square, the financial district, and Chinatown. And public transportation stops were near the front door. I have paid more, much more at some nearby hotels; and rarely, a room has cost me a bit less per night in San Francisco. But I have not found a better hotel value in my favorite city. I look forward to many return stays at The Cartwright.

Hats off to all the staff and crew who make our stay very comfortable. Special thanks to Ms. Mari, Josh and Mr. Tony who makes our stay very special. The hotel is at the heart of union square very accessible to all resto, cable car station and shopping. The hotel is very cozy, neat and clean and has an airconditioner which i did not expect at all in SFO which is commo ly has no Airconditioning. The staff is very accomodating and helpful. It is highly recommended to stay at this hotel. Kudos to Cartwright Hotel!

I thoroughly enjoyed my time at this hotel. Though it's always hard finding parking in SF, this hotel is only a short walk from several parking places and the room we had, though small, was spectacular. The interior itself feels like the set of a old movie and I adored being able to walk to a bar nearby and have only a short ride to the Castro. Highly recommend (especially to AAA Club members)

"Very pleasant stay"

23/08/2017

Location wise, The Cartwright couldn't be better as Union Square, Chinatown, AT&T Park, Coit Tower, cable cars and piers are all nearby. In fact, we walked to most of these places during our stay. Our room had been recently renovated to a high standard with stylish decor. The only issue is that it did face Sutter Street and, despite being on the 7th floor, there was a fair bit of noise at street level during the night. An extractor fan in the bathroom would have been useful as it got very steamy following a shower. Staff were friendly and helpful and the hotel lobby and lounge area was very pleasant and featured an open fireplace and chess board. There's a great diner on the corner of Sutter and Powell: Lori's, that serves all the American classics. We ate there a number of times and enjoyed the food and excellent decor. The Cartwright would be the first hotel I would choose should I visit SF again.

"Very very noisy hotel with no air conditioning. Avoid!"

23/08/2017

Stayed in San Francisco for 4 nights and was given a room facing the sutter street. On hindsight, i should have requested for a change in room because it is so noisy. The room does not come with air-conditioning (only ceiling fan) and so it is really stuffy at night if you don't open the windows. I must admit i am really surprised by the high ratings provided by other fellow reviewers because it is really a dilapidated hotel. Additionally, the hotel is undergoing renovation thus it is very noisy at all times. Further, no refrigerator in the room and no bottled water provided. The only plus side for this hotel is the location - it's near to the Key shopping areas and You can walk from the hotel to ferry terminal and fisherman wharf. To sum up, i will not stay here anymore.

"great location, little room"

15/08/2017

Nicely located with tons of restaurants, shops, cafes and major areas of interest including the Museum of Modern Art, Jewish Museum, Museum of African Diaspora and the Moscone Center a short walk away. The room was very small, as is the bathroom--not much they can do about that given the age of the hotel. It was well kept up and the lobby areas were available to hang out, read, have some coffee or tea and a free newspaper. Free WiFi in rooms a plus, and the staff were very friendly. For the size of the room it was a bit pricey (averaged $206/night after taxes). I understand SF downtown is expensive, but they could do better for retirees, AARP members, those with advance reservations on pricing.

Myself and my husband stayed here for 4 nights while travelling across America on our honeymoon. The hotel was great and the staff were lovely. The lady on the front desk (can't remember her name) was very helpful with any questions we had about the area or tickets we were looking to buy for various places we wanted to visit. There was tea and coffee available in the mornings downstairs. Would definitely stay here again.

"Hotel with character"

08/08/2017

The location is perfect for all things SF. It is close to Powelstreet and 1 block from Union Square. Despite being so close the hotel itself is very quiet. The hotel has a great character in it's decor. I absolutely loved the fireplace. Although in the summer it was very chilly and thw warmth inviting. The people at the frontdesk are very welcoming and fabulous. Great concierge, thank you Kevin. The hotel has no restaurant and serves only coffee and tea in the morning, but there are plenty of great food options nearby. There is Sears Fine Food right around the corner and for snacks there is a 7-11 right accros the street. My room was dpacious and quiet. I never heard a sound on the third floor. The bathroom is kindda small, bit ther is a walk in wardrobe dressing area. There was also an window ac unit which i did not use. The bed was comfortable. Only bummer though i could not connect to wifi from my room, the connection was poor and i had to go to the lobby each time. No biggie though i enjoyed the fireplace. I will definetly be back.

Staff was great during check in check out. Hotel room was great. The hotel was under construction so I got the new room, unfortunately there was no visible heater in the new room. When the front desk was confronted with this problem, one of the staff explained that she will turn on the heater from downstairs. However that didn't work. So I called again, she said she isn't familiar with the new hotel layout (a little unprofessional in my opinion, each staff should know the layouts of the hotel rooms they put guests in) so she suggested a portable heater which was sent to our hotel room. Overall, despite the heating problem, the stay was nice.

My Son and I received a very warm welcome when we arrived , especially after a 10 hour flight. A great little hotel with good access to all the various public transports. "Perfect Walking Distance to Powell/Hyde Trolley & Union Square"

27/07/2017

I traveled with my boyfriend and his son to this hotel last weekend. We valeted the car at a price of $45/day. The parking garage is behind the hotel, do not use the adjacent parking garage because they charge a steep $59/day. If you use the self parking, it's only $35/day. We decided to valet out of convenience and so we didn't have to trek up the steep hill on Powell. The staff was what stood out the most to me. They were all extremely friendly and welcoming. The front desk staff did such an amazing job and the check in/check out process was easy. We even got an upgraded newly renovated room at no extra cost. The rooms were on the small side, but it had everything we needed, including a nice light-up vanity inside the closet for me to put on makeup. We stayed a total of two nights. The bed was a small queen. I would have asked for a king next time. I couldn't find the ice bucket or machine, but they had cold sodas downstairs in the fridge by the front desk. All in all, we enjoyed our stay. I liked the location, since it was close to Union Square and the Powell/Hyde trolley. We used Uber to get around the city, which only costed about $10 each place we went. I'm very happy with my stay, and would recommend for those who are simple minded and don't mind smaller rooms.

The location of this hotel is Excellent. The rooms are very small but I guess that is expected as the prices are cheaper in comparison to other hotels in Union Square. San Francisco is a very expensive City. Considering i'm from London it must be bad! If you are after a few nights in San Fran and you are going to be out and about then I would recommend this spot. If you plan on spending a lot of time in the hotel then it is probably best to look somewhere else.

My wife and I stayed at the Cartwright for two nights in July. Staff at the hotel are very friendly and the lobby is nicely decorated. The room is basic but has everything you need although the bathroom is small. We stayed in a room overlooking the entrance of the hotel and it is very noisy due to traffic. If you are a light sleeper make sure you ask for a room towards the back of the hotel. The location is a 2 minute walk from Union Square and is also close to bus stops and the cable car stop. If you're a tourist it is a great base to see all the major sights!

Although the room was very small, we loved our stay at the Cartwright. The location was right by Union Square, so it felt safe and was close to shopping and restaurants. The room itself was very small, however was clean and seemed to be recently updated. What we loved about this hotel (besides the amazing location) was the staff and the atmosphere. The staff was very sweet and accommodating, and downstairs they had a fireplace, couches, and chess games, so at night we brought down some wine and had a nice relaxing night. Perfect location - 30 seconds from the Powell street tram line, 1 minute from union square. Traditional diner next door. Honestly location could not have been better.$7 single trip on tram took you straight to Fishermans wharf! Great start to the day! Friendly and helpful staff. Room - traditional, fire escape on the exterior of the building - lovely!! small comfortable room ( hotel renovations ongoing but it didn't interfere with our stay at all) but very comfortable beds which were ideal after all day sightseeing! Fan on ceiling worked well. All you needed in room except there wasn't a safe in the room. This was the only downside for me. The concierge said there was a hotel safe though if I needed. Spent a very enjoyable few days here in San Francisco!

After having such a unpleasant experience at our previous hotel, it was such a relief to arrive at the Cartwright. It is in a beautiful, old building which is only a block over from Union Square. The staff are AMAZING!!! We arrived two hours before check in but they were happy to check us in early. Our room was clean and comfortable. It looked like it was renovated not long ago; it looked modern but didn't take away from the classic style of the building. Our room overlooked Rutter Street and had a typical San Franciscan fire escape at the window which we got a kick out of. Such a perfect location! A small walk to the stores around Union Square, loads of restaurants and China Town. The Powell Street cable car is literally metres away and is a great, fun way to get around the city. The only negative was the road noise... Easily fixed as I bought ear plugs from Walgreens (which was also metres away). It was enough for me to take one star off this review but not enough to ruin a awesome stay in San Francisco.

Stayed here for three nights, small room and bathroom and pretty old fashioned but the location was perfect to union square the trams and pier 39. We loved San francisco lots to see and do and this hotel was ideally situated to explore. Would recommend booking the trip to the rock before you go as lots of people arrived and were very disappointed that they could not get booked. Took the tour bus over the golden gate bridge a must and also a visit to Lombard street and the painted ladies San francisco is beautiful, lots of lovely buildings, shops, bars and restaurants all within east walking distance from this hotel.

Room we were in was very small and no AC. Windows were dirty. Lobby furniture has seen its days. Hotel was under renovation. We were in a room that had been renovated. Our room was very small. Location was the best thing about the hotel. Easy access to everything. While there was no food at the hotel the diner next door was great and convenient.

There are better much choices for the same money and in the area. Rooms are small, bathroom is miniscule, toilet is crammed for space, I could barely move my arms. Paint is peeling on the walls, hallway is dinghy. Checked out early and moved two streets away at much better place for same price.

"Old style hotel in a good location"

29/06/2017

Love the old hotels. This one is under renovation but some of the guest room amenities have already been upgraded. Great bed and very modern bathroom. Internet is free. We arrived very early from a cruise and were offered the use of the internet, the lounge, and coffee, all of which we used for 2 hours until we checked in. Very pleasant staff who arranged a shuttle to the airport for the two of us for $34 (a taxi would have been $65). There are several good restaurants in the surrounding 2 blocks and it is walking distance to both Union Square and Chinatown.

"Mine stay at the Cartwright"

29/06/2017

I was extremely pleased with location of hotel. It's a prime location for everything. We were next to Powell where the cable cart goes and takes you down to Fisher Men's Wharf. Starbucks at the corner and a couple of blocks from the center of Union Square. Chinatown is a 7 min walk! Most of all, I was very happy that I was able to bring my two mini poodles with us to hotel.

This little hotel is in a perfect location for tourists, plenty of inexpensive places to eat nearby and it's easy to walk to Union Square, Market .Street and Chinatown. It has history and character, much nicer than bland standard hotels. We were there four days and all of the staff were lovely, very friendly and helpful.

"Small rooms but great location"

24/06/2017

Super helpful staff and spotlessly clean. Great location for Union Square. No bar/restaurant but general store opposite and liquor store next door for essentials and gorgeous downstairs space to relax in and BYO. Lori's Diner at the corner, as well as other restaurants. Small rooms and in truth, some of the attention to detail with the decor has been very poorly finished in places. The lack of heating is an issue so ask for a fan heater and blanket when you book in - whilst I appreciate that the building is, according to the girl on reception 'an old gal' each room really ought to be able to choose whether or not to have the radiator on. W'chair accessible albeit a tight squeeze in places. Would return.

Hello MAJ1972, Thank you very much for your review and for staying with us at The Cartwright Hotel Union Square. We do apologize for not exceeding you expectations. "Great location, poor service"

20/06/2017

This hotel was in a great location and proximity to my office. However, the level of service at the front desk was confusing and abysmal. The staff was friendly and the rooms were nicely appointed, considering the small space they had to work with. But the confusion surrounding my reservation was ridiculous, especially considering the owner of my company had contacted the hotel to make sure everything was taken cared of, so I wouldn't have any issues when checking in. Staff needs to be better trained. Saying someone is new is not acceptable.

Ronnie N, Manager at The Cartwright Hotel - Union Square, BW Premier Collection, responded to this review
Hello Oceana, Thank you very much for your review and for staying with us at The Cartwright Hotel Union Square. I would like to apologize for the confusion on check in and payment. After looking over your reservation it was booked thru a 3rd party but not pre-paid. We do have rates that are non-refundable or pre-paid that do require you to pay at the time of booking. If this is not the case we must have authorization in writing to do so. This is for our protection, the guest paying and the guest staying with us. There were no notes on the reservation so there is a chance this may have been a miscommunication however, this would have been the procedure to send out the authorization form. If you do have any other questions or concerns please feel free to reach out to me at: [email protected] I hope you have a great day! Cheers.

We chose to stay here because we wanted to be in the city and it was cheap for the location! I was bummed to find out they didn't have breakfast, that's my favorite thing about BW's. The check in was fast and the lady was funny! There is parking for $35+tax in a garage and you have in and out privilege for 24 hours which was sweet. The hotel is old so the elevator was interesting but works like a charm! The room was so small, but so modern and just darling! We were up on the 7th floor so we had sweet views! All the front desk staff and concierge were AMAZING. I would recommend this place just because of the staff!

Very central to everything, right near Union Square with easy access to Touristy choices. Great restaurants nearby Walgreens across the road. Hotel was in the midst of upgrading rooms and amenities which caused us little or no bother..our room had just been renovated..a little on the small side and bathroom was tiny..Staff were extremely helpful..

Hi MummaG_2012, Thank you for taking the time to review the Cartwright Hotel Union Square. Our 104 year old quintessential boutique hotel certainly has some size restrictions. Buildings of our age in the heart of San Francisco have relatively small footprints. We look to overcome the size of the rooms by offering one of the best locations in Union Square. Right in the heart of The City, but just a little off the beaten path so you don't feel overwhelmed. Add in a wonderful staff and a clean renovated room and you are on your way to a true San Francisco experience. Once again thank you for taking the time to review our hotel. We hope to see you again on your next visit to San Francisco. Cheers, Steven Viscio, GM

Best Western The Cartwright Hotel, I really don't know why this hotel Why is this hotel rated a Premier Hotel. I always stay at Best Western Properties, this is an average hotel. I've stayed at Best Western Plus hotel properties that are 100 times better than this one. This hotel should be down graded.

Steven V, General Manager at The Cartwright Hotel - Union Square, BW Premier Collection, responded to this review
Hi francesc423, Thank you for reviewing the Cartwright Hotel Union Square a Best Western Premier Collection Hotel. Premier Collection hotels are new to the Best Western family so we are still trying to find our footing. The Premier Collection properties are meant to be an option to travelers in areas where Best Westerns are not well represented. In the past 104 year old boutique hotels such as ours did not have a seat at the Best Western table. If you want a location that has great restaurants, world class shopping, and plenty of transportation options just steps away, we are your hotel. The Best Western website does a great job in describing properties allowing consumers to make choices that fit their needs. The filter option is a great tool to match your needs with the appropriate hotel. I am sorry our hotel was not a good fit. I am certain you will find the perfect Best Western the next time your travel. Cheers, Steven Viscio, GM

We had a newly renovated room to the back of the building and it was quiet. (Renovations were still taking place on the lower floors, but we we never found the noise effecting our stay/sleep) It was clean & the bed and pillows were very comfortable. There was no bar fridge & the bathroom was small. But shower pressure was good. Check in was pleasant & quick. Location is the winner, close to Union Square, shops & restaurants.

Me and my girlfriend stayed here for 5 nights in one of the basic rooms. The rooms are small but very clean including the bathroom. The bed slept great and the quick wifi in the room is a great extra. The lobby is a very nice place to be and in the morning you can grab a free cup of coffee there before you leave for the day. The staff was so very nice and helpful.

The bed was comfortable and the location was close to Union Square. The staff were friendly, polite and helpful. There is no in-room safe or bar fridge. Basic room only and no restaurant in the property and no facilities to self-cater. Hotel was under massive renovations during our stay and we were not made aware at the time of booking.

The room was smaller than a house bedroom. The beds (2) were twin size beds. The location is great though as you are in the middle of downtown. The staff was also very friendly. We were just passing through so I could have gotten a better value for my money probably on the outskirts of San Francisco.

"Pleasantly Surprised"

02/06/2017

Booked this place because they allow dogs and it was one of the cheaper options in an area within walking distance to The Masonic. We weren't expecting much. Upon check-in we were given an upgrade to a King suite (we originally reserved a King room). The suite was awesome! Not the best views, but we could do some people watching on the street below, the windows opened to allow cool, fresh air in. The bathroom was huge and the bed was the most comfortable bed we've slept in in years! In fact, I'm mad at myself for forgetting to look to see what kind of mattress it was. There was a coffee maker and mini fridge in the room, plus they offered coffee in the lobby in the mornings. The building is older, but with character and nice furnishings. The elevator and stairs were a little small/tight, but nothing to complain about. They even had some treats in the lobby for our dog. The only issues we had were minor: 1. one of the TV remotes didn't fully work, the volume was funky. No big deal because the other remote worked for both TVs. 2. the shower did not have a "tub," but was more or less flat with the rest of the bathroom flooring, just a slight slant to keep the water in the "tub" area. The shower head (a removable, hand held head) was pointed straight at the shower curtain, which allowed the water to spray out the bottom and extend to the floor and bath towel. Again, not a huge deal. Oh, and our shower was a disabled accessible shower, so it had the folding seat and everything. Showers in the other rooms might be different. 3. Our dog ended up peeing on the sidewalk across the street, because the closest area to let her go to the bathroom was a long block away at Union Square Park (according to the front desk). While she could have held it until we got to the park, as a dog, she didn't know how close the park was! I tried to reason with her and let her know it was coming up, but strangely enough, she didn't seem to believe me and just let loose! It would be nice if there was a tiny patch of grass or gravel just outside the hotel for her to pee. Then she could make it to the park to poop, no problem. All in all, we would definitely stay here again. I miss the bed already ;-)

30/05/2017

We have just spent 4 nights here and the hotel is obviously under renovation which is difficult to rate it fairly. The rooms were really fresh, nice and comfortable (although smallish) but the hallways were Narrow and gloomyish. There is no breakfast available but they do provide coffee between 7-10am which was good and the cosy areas/lounges down in the lobby were great. We also used the business centre computer and were able to print at no cost. There were problems with the lift and we had to carry luggage down (thankfully not up) 6 floors. However the staff were amazing and more than willing to do this for us! They were really professional, pleasant, helpful and we appreciated our interactions with them! Location was great for accessing transport, however if you're keen you CAN walk to most attractions (the steep hilly streets are part of the fun!) we really enjoyed our stay and thank the wonderful staff for making it so good.

19/05/2017

Stayed at the Cartwright in November of 2016 due to a friend's visit. We picked this hotel because it's conveniently located next to Union Square and also because it's pet friendly. Rooms are somewhat small but have recently been remodeled so they looked nice and clean. There's parking available but have to leave the car a street behind the hotel. Overall, we had a good experience here and would recommend it to anyone looking for a pet-friendly hotel with reasonable rates.

17/05/2017

We booked at the last minute, so there was not a lot of cost friendly hotels available. There was a massive conference on in town and we were warned by our travel agent it wasn't going to be great. The room was very small, not much room to walk past the bed etc. It was also very warm and had a small air conditioner. I don't think it would be comfortable at all during Summer. The location is good if you want to be close to Union square.

"Quaint Hotel in the heart of SFO downtown.."

4
11/05/2017

The hotel is right in the heart of downtown and close to major shopping & train locations. The rooms were great and all amenities were provided. The staff was also very warm and cordial. The 1 missing star was because they were under renovation and it was a little musty and they don't have complimentary breakfast, which for a business traveller can be a slight negative. It also got a little loud in the night due to some local disturbance, but guess that's a positive & negative for the location. Overall a great hotel.

"Overall Satisfied"

The internet speed was good for my purposes. Place was clean and relatively accommodating. The noise level was OK although need to shut the bathroom door since the bathroom window needs to be left open for ventilation. It does seem I have overcharge on my bill that I may need to resolve though.

"Good location, reasonable price for location, small bathroom and room"

04/05/2017

We stayed for a 3 day weekend in April. First time to city. Good location. Close to public transportation, hop on hop off tours, china town, shopping, theaters, various restaurants, and rental cars. Short travel times to all tourist areas. Staff was very helpful and friendly. Area felt safe walking at night. Hotel is old, but clean and appeared well kept. Our only complaint/recommendation to other travelers.... Room (especially bathroom) was VERY small. So small, my tall husband used the lobby bathroom because he was not able to sit because the sink, toilet and tub are so close together. That being said, we did not spend a lot of time in the room. We were there to sightsee. But for taller or larger people you might need to take that into consideration. Also, parking at hotel is $50 per night. Would recommend using public transportation or use public lot 1 block away $27 per night. We rented a car (2 blocks away for 24hrs day trip to NAPA. $69 Hertz

"Old fashioned feel, modern amenities"

03/05/2017

The location of this hotel couldn't be better. The room I had was recently renovated and immaculate. The elevator desperately needs remodeling but it was evident upgrading was going on during my stay (painting, etc.). Shower was excellent and there was even a selection of organic teas to choose from in the morning!

"Not Best Western Quality"

3
02/05/2017

Affiliated now with the Best Western chain, this hotel falls short on delivering BW type quality and amenities. I stayed here a bit more than a year ago and rated the hotel rather mediocre, but not sloppy. But now that it was a Best Western I had higher expectations. However, the tradition of a Best Western would offer a continental breakfast, in-room fridges and microwaves, vending and ice, and higher quality room heating and air flow equipment. You won't find that here! So if you're a fan of Best Western, try another city location. However, if you'll settle for tres simple and a top notch location, you can give it a try. I did find some, but not all, of the reception staff quite helpful.

Ronnie N, Manager at The Cartwright Hotel - Union Square, BW Premier Collection, responded to this review
Hello. Thank you very much for your review and for staying with us at The Cartwright Hotel Union Square. We do apologize for not exceeding your expectations. With our particular Best Western classification we do not have to automatically offer breakfast. The Best Western website has created some excellent filters which allows you to search specifically for hotels that meet your criteria i.e.,free breakfast, fridge, microwave etc. Again we do apologize and we thank you for your feedback. Have a great day! Cheers.

"Great hotel in a perfect location!"

02/05/2017

Stayed here recently during a workshop and had a wonderful time! The hotel is under renovation and the "new" rooms are comfortable with good beds and fluffy towels in the bathroom. Speedy internet too! This is an older hotel, so the rooms are on the small side, but who comes to San Francisco to sit in a hotel? Union Square, great restaurants and the cable cars are steps away! My room was on the side of the hotel, and other than the occasional siren on Sutter St, I had no problems with noise. There are no ice machines - but ask at the front desk and the wonderful staff will get you a cup or a bucket of ice. I booked through the Best Western website and got a fantastic rate - definitely will return!

"Great location ; nice upgrades"

29/04/2017

My wife and I returned for a long weekend at the Cartwright. The rooms are small. It well equipped and the bathrooms have upgraded since our last visit a couple years ago. The only negative is we had a connecting door to room next door that provided no sound attenuation. We could hear everything and happened to have a loud neighbor who stayed up late; thank goodness for earplugs. We could have asked to change rooms but hoped neighbors would move...no luck but still find Cartwright to be a good value for location and amenities. Also, very nice staff. Car park is block away and $35/day but this is downtown SF so expected.

This place is a nice place to stay, given the rooms are tiny but this is expected in this type of town. The rooms have everything you need and it is well decked out. The staff are friendly and it is located right near union square with easy access to all public transport.

The location of the hotel and the accommodations there were very good. We were able to walk around Union Square, Chinatown, and visit many shops nearby. The hotel had an old world charm and the staff were friendly and very helpful. Room was small, but very clean. We enjoyed our visit.

"Worst Sleep EVER - And I Do Mean EVER"

This is a old hotel, they have these steam heaters and when I went it happened to be cooler so I needed this heater on. I didn't know it took over 30 minutes for these to turn on but even before that happens, you have to call down to the front desk to have them turn it on, which I didn't know. I woke up in the middle of the night freezing. Once they turn on, it's loud as hell and drips leaving puddles on the middle of the floor, I have video's and pictures and willing to share with you. The staff was friendly and I enjoyed them, and the room was comfy except for the 2 horrible nights of trying to sleep there. They eventually had to bring me a space heater because the noise wouldn't stop and the room was ice cold. If it's not cold, you're probably okay since you won't have to use it. I wouldn't stay here again during the cooler months.

Ronnie N, Manager at The Cartwright Hotel - Union Square, BW Premier Collection, responded to this review

"Not for the noise-sensitive but ideal location for Union Sq"

4
13/04/2017

Union Square is a great area for tourists to stay, especially those who are interested in shopping, cable cars, and downtown dining. But anyone sensitive to noise may want to avoid older "boutique" hotels and opt for the high-rise concrete properties like the Grant Hyatt or the Marriott. However if value is important and you can handle the noise, The Cartwright Hotel is one example of a great choice: super convenient but just outside the highest-traffic core where it's a little too busy. Walgreens is just across the street and a famous 24-hr breakfast joint/diner is basically next door. Nob Hill, Chinatown, and the financial district are within walking distance; Japantown is a short bus ride away on the same street. The block is also excellent for ride sharing apps, unlike many other Union Square hotels where traffic is too busy / congested for the driver to pick you up. As for the room itself, the renovations are well-done but expect to feel cramped as the rooms are tiny. The walls are thin too so again, beware if you're sensitive to banging doors and loud people. If you have a workaround though (e.g. earplugs, noise cancelling earphones, or a Bluetooth speaker playing white noise) and you get a room in the back of the hotel, then this hotel is a pretty good choice given the relatively expensive area.

"Friendly, comfortable, and great location"

The staff - front desk, concierge, and cleaning staff - are wonderful. Friendly, helpful, knowledgeable, and professional. The hallways are like a trip into the early 1900's, but the rooms are updated, modern, and very comfortable. All this just steps away from a Powell-Hyde cable car stop, restaurants, and shops and a couple blocks from Union Square. Loved it!

Excellent hotel location and design. A cool urban industrial decor to room, coupled with a traditional San Francisco feel to the lobby and interior. The staff were friendly and kmowledgable. Will definitely visit again!

"Very Central Hotel"

10/04/2017

This is a very old building having been built about 1909 and is currently being renovated. However the renovations didn't disturb us at all. The staff at the front desk are not particularly friendly but Tony the concierge was nice and helpful. There was no assistance with luggage or finding your room though but seems typical of USA hotels. There is no dining room but there is a nice sitting room behind reception with a log fire in the morning with complimentary tea and coffee available. Our room was very small but with a large comfortable bed and good pillows. The bathroom was very tiny but adequate. The room needed another mirror in the room so hair etc could be done at the same time the bathroom was in use as there is only room for one person at the very small mirror over the basin. As it is an old building it was quite noisy with doors banging and the street noise outside. It is close to Union Square where the Hop on and off buses start, but the shopping is exclusive and expensive. There is a Starbucks very close, and also a Diner almost next door so we could get breakfast and coffee there. The diner meals were good. We wouldn't stay here again as I think the Fishermans Wharf area offered more in foods and entertainment than Union Square.

"Great Location In Union Square"

07/04/2017

Really good location close to Powell Street which is the main artery for cable cars and muni buses. Room is like the size of a bedroom with a really small bathroom. We took Bart & got off at the Powell St station & walked up a slight incline 4 blocks. We love our coffee in the mornings & Starbucks was across the street. Walgreens was also across the street & they sell day passes for unlimited cable car/muni bus. We will definitely stay here again because the location was central to everything!

Great location, nice and close to union square which made it easy to get around. I've been to San Fran a few times and unless you're made of money, the rooms will always be small. The renovations here have made the small rooms seem very cosy and felt easy to relax in. The hotel staff are all excellent lovely people, the only reason I have this place a 4/5 was because of a run in with one grumpy staffer who obviously expected a larger tip from what he thought was an unsuspecting tourist. Besides him, everyone is great and more than willing to ensure you have a great time. Would stay here again

"Great Location"

The Cartwright Hotel: Excellent Location for first timers to Union Square or even regulars who just want to head to the city for a romantic weekend. FYI: The Hotels in the area are old and the rooms are not huge so no matter where you choose to stay in this zone don't expect a large hotel room Hotel: The Cartwright has done some upgrades - Clean Rooms - Super Comfortable Beds with Flat Screen TV's. The rooms have ceiling fans and windows that actually open. The bathrooms are small - one person at a time - like the room very clean. We stayed for two nights - the first night in a King Bed Room & the second we upgraded to a King Suite. On our first day we arrived early so the room was not yet ready, they held our bags while went sightseeing and out for lunch, The room was ready at 3. The entire staff was excellent, professional and helpful. Lillian (Front Desk Check In) was exceptional - she was amazing - assisting us with upgrading our room for the second night - A King Suite for an additional amount but nothing overwhelming. Unlike the King Bed room the King Suite was Huge, Very large bathroom centered between the bedroom and a small living room that over looked the street. It also had two separate entry doors. The living room had its own flat screen TV with a pull out bed, along with a refrigerator. There are no Ice Machines but if you call down to the desk they bring a huge Ice Bucket within a few minutes, Great Service. Location: right off Sutter and Powell, trolley cars run through this route. There's a number of places to eat along with a Starbucks within a 100 yards. Uber works great in San Francisco so if you want to get to Fishermans Wharf, China Town or North Beach its a few minutes wait and only a few dollars to get to any of these locations. I used Expedia to book the room and received a decent deal for San Francisco rates. We will definitely come back to the Cartwright, the location is EXCELLENT & The Staff was AWESOME, Thank You Lillian

28/11/2016

Great location. Small but very cozy hotel. Staff was excellent. Rooms were tiny but comfortable. The beds were comfortable, although an extra blanket would have been nice for the cold San Francisco eves. Also, a non dairy creamer for the coffee would be a great idea.

1-2minutes from Union square. Parking awailable one blok away (it is possible to unload luggage in front of the hotel). Edward (whom checked us in) was very friendly and was very helpfull with suggestions :-) There is no breakfast served - but the hotel offers free cofee to go and discount at a diner located next door. We would stay here again the next time we are in San Francisco.

We booked here because we are BW Rewards members and have had great luck with staying at BW locations. This. Place. Is. Horrible. First off, they don't tell you anywhere online you have to pay for parking at a nominal fee of $31 per 24 hours for self parking or $41 per 24 hours of valet parking! I have never had to pay for parking and it's not even on site! Secondly, this is a 'premier' hotel, but what they don't tell you is it is extremely worn, old, and run down. Not worthy of 2? rating. Yes the location is clean, so is every other BW location I've been to, but it is not remotely Premier allocation worthy. Third, upon check in we requested a room upgrade as per our status with the BW Rewards program and was completely ignored by the staff at the front desk. Even after checking in the site is still showing upgraded rooms available. Extremely unimpressed. What's the point of being loyal if you can't use the perks? I would not recommend going here. The image of luxury in an old school hotel is false as I wouldn't even consider renting a place in this condition. Also, the 'plush bath robes' promised in the description on the site are non existent. Be prepared to hear every single noise from the hallway and any rooms around you. Don't forget the TV.. It is not a 40" as advertised, it's a 32". Can't wait to get out of here!

"Old and VERY CLEAN "

15/11/2016

If you're cool with old historic hotels, instead of modern newer chains you'll like this hotel! It's in the Nob Hill area of the city and close to a lot of things that are walking distance in the city. The entire hotel is very, very clean and had an old, vintage charm to it, as the building is very old. We loved that and made it ok that the rooms were a bit small. The unscreened window to the fire escape let you listen to the sounds of the city! The staff was exceptionally nice and went out of their way to accommodate. You should know that there isn't an AC, but the ceiling fan and window are just fine, and the bathroom is small and doesn't have a ventilation fan, so if you require a lot of space to groom, bring a mirror to use at the desk inside the bedroom, and you might want to bring along som Poo-purri?? Also the reservationist for Best Western said that the rooms were equipped with a mini fridge and microwave, but The Cartwright didn't. We made it work though. All in all it was a great, charming place to stay.

Ronnie N, Manager at The Cartwright Hotel - Union Square, BW Premier Collection, responded to this review

We stayed here for 2 nights and it was the perfect location if you want to be in the heart of the city. Hotel was quite old but charming and really comfortable. Our room was small but had everything we needed including a silent ceiling fan which was definitely needed. No breakfast here but free hot drinks every morning until 11am. Friendly staff and great location sums this hotel up.

The Cartwright is old but a bit elegant. Very clean and the staff friendly and helpful. Edward at the front desk was very nice and a pleasure to see every day. The location close to Union Square great for sight seeing and restaurants. We were upgraded to a suite which was large and comfortable, corner with city views. Roxie's on the corner nice for breakfast and reasonable. I would return to this hotel on another visit.

Great Stay. Loved the vanity in the closet which provided extra lighted mirror for getting ready. Coffee pot needs to be updated. the tray melted when it got too hot. This hotel is charming, in a fabulous location, quiet, pet friendly and affordable. The rooms was basic, bathroom was very small, and the bed dipped terribly in the middle. The pillows were fluffy-so big that it was uncomfortable-with no extra bedding in the closet. Wish breakfast was offered.

Hotel has unquestionably best location in San Francisco. We stayed at this hotel 7 nights. Although it is an older building, our room was lovely and very comfortable.A mirror in our room was the only thing missing. We loved our stayed at the Cartwright Hotel. "Good location, rooms need major updating"

3
24/10/2016

The hotel is in a great location in Union Square. The lobby is charming and the front desk folks were friendly. However, this hotel is in need of some serious renovation. Everything in the room was clearly very old, and not in a charming/classy way like the lobby. There weren't any "extras" which is fine, but I suppose I have come to expect some. No water (in room or in the lobby), no coffee maker, no fridge, the most basic cable I've seen in decades (not that you want to spend your time in SF watching TV!), and no air conditioning. The AC was my biggest issue because it got up to 78 degrees and I expect to be comfortable in a hotel. There is a ceiling fan but that wasn't much help. You can also open the windows but because of the popular area, it was incredibly loud and impossible to sleep with the windows open. I realise that the hotel is under renovations, but it was unclear to me that I was booking one of the non-renovated rooms (and AC isn't a new thing, I'm surprised they're just now undergoing renovations). Was there a way to know that the room I was booking wasn't updated and maybe I missed it? Overall this hotel was very average, and we still had a good time. It was also slightly cheaper than other hotels in the area, so that makes up for some of what was lacking! We barely spent any time in the room since we were out exploring and only there for three nights. If I were staying longer than three nights though, I don't think I would stay here again.

Ronnie N, Manager at The Cartwright Hotel - Union Square, BW Premier Collection, responded to this review
Hello and thank you for staying with us at The Cartwright Hotel Union Square. We are happy you enjoyed the lobby area as well as the front desk team. Have a great day. Cheers.

"Nice touches but room for improvement"

3
17/10/2016

Hotel room had some nice touches - jars of cotton wool, tissues, hairdryer, coffee maker. However lacks attention to detail in other areas - no blind on bathroom window so light comes through the glass bathroom door; no safe in room (use at reception, free); no fridge in room. Could do with hooks in dead spaces by vanity unit, and bigger bedside cabinets. Very noisy hotel, no consideration from other visitors (doors banging, shouting, etc) nor staff/cleaners - cleaners come knocking before 9am so put sign out if you don't want disturbing. Even on our last day, checking out at 12, still had early knock from cleaner. Oh and no bar (we'll certainly not in use) nor any dining area nor entertainment - in fact no entertainment nearby.

"Small, conveniently located"

4
17/10/2016

The location of the hotel is convenient to the financial district and many restaurants. I even walked to AT&T Park. The staff was helpful and for the most part friendly. The suites have refrigerators which I need while I travel. Valet parking is available but the lead time for your car is about 30-45 minutes. The room price and the parking price is very good compared to a similar hotel a few blocks down Sutter. Overall, the facility is clean - modest - pleasant.

"Diamond in the rough"

3
15/10/2016

The bed was surprisingly very comfortable and the room was clean. Most of the staff was very nice and accommodating. The lobby areas are great (although the bar was not operating which was a disappointment). The outside area is loud and since there is no A/C we had to open the windows -- not ideal. Adjoining room door needs to be sound-proofed. The staff should make sure the street in front of the hotel has the spot for loading/unloading open. A service truck was parked in front. Had to bring all our (large) luggage up the hill to load our car. That was a terrible last impression!

Ronnie N, Manager at The Cartwright Hotel - Union Square, BW Premier Collection, responded to this review
Hello Vilija, thank you very much for your review and feedback. I am glad you did have a good stay with us. I do apologize for the bar area first but unfortunately right now it is not opened because we do not have a license to operate. With our renovation we will be addressing the room issues. I do apologize for the white zone as well, with the renovation we do have trucks coming in and out of the hotel. Have a great day.

"Tiny, European feel"

Great historic, European feel hotel. Kind staff. Very small (we did 2 twin beds) but efficient, clean rooms with A/C. Close walk uphill to Top of the Mark, trolley stop, Chinatown etc. Would stay again for the price. Felt safe. Parking was only $35.

09/10/2016

Although an older property we found the facilities very comfortable. The bathroom a little cramped but included a bath with a very good shower over the bath. The bed gave us a very good sleep after our long flight from the UK. The management and in particular the conciege were very helpful - gave us details for the "Hop on, Hop off bus tour and arranged our shuttle to the Airport and also provided discount vouchers for local diners in the area. We would definitely stay here again.

"Not quite 3 star"

3
08/10/2016

We were to stay at the Cartwright for 6 days but found the photos and reality of the hotel were not quite as shown and left after two nights . Our travel agent getting us a room at the Hilton Union Square at a cheaper rate . The bed was comfortable in the small room but the bathroom had no exhaust fan or any room to comfortably dry yourself without opening the door to the bed room . There was not a secure lock on the door nor a safe to deposit passports etc. and we thought the staff did their work but without any real motivation . The Hotel is renovating the rooms but in our room quality control is an issue . toilet pan not fitted square to the wall , tile where shower rose comes through wall had a hole not covered by a flange . The passageway was a bit dark and dingy , not at all inviting or warm or with class It did not compare as a three star hotel to the Whitcomb Hotel where we stayed one night on a return to San Francesco . The Whitcomb had a bit of class .

"Like being in a dorm room"

05/10/2016

My husband and I chose the Cartright because of its location. We found the staff to be very helpful and professional but for the price, the accommodations were not great. The room was tiny - we reserved a queen room and we're given a full bed. The vanity was in the closet...yes, really. We literally had to take turns getting into our suitcases as there was not enough room to be in both at once. When waiting for the elevator, another guest commented that he thought the seven dwarves must stay here as there's not enough room for anyone else. The bed was comfortable, but our feet were well off the bottom of it. So, if you don't mind being in a teeny, tiny place for the price of a full-size room, the staff, location, and quality of the bed are good, even great. But if size and space matters to you, this is not your hotel.

The hotel itself is a little old and run down. There was two particular staff members that went over and above to help us out! The hotel Cartwright hotel in San Francisco its an average hotel. There is need to improve on the look and of the Hotel. Need to modernize it and the potters and an elegant reception area. There is need to have a variety of teas in the rooms not only black coffee. It will really be of service if the hotel can have some breakfast.

Started a 10 day drip thru NoCal by staying 2 nights at the Cartwright. Had stayed here in the summer of '07. We love this hotel. Great character and wonderful staff. For both stays we have had a room at the front of the hotel. Next time we are in SF we will be at the Cartwright but I'll try to get a room toward the back of the building to minimize the street noise.

Had a 5 day stay at the Cartwright for our honeymoon, although the rooms are very small, they were lovely, clean and well decorated. Hotel location was fabulous, located just by union square. Lovely American diner (Louis diner) on the corner that I would highly reccomend. Only downside to the hotel was the day time reception staff - appeared rude at times, and not the most helpful.. However the evening reception guy could not have been more helpful.

Character old-style hotel just off Union Square. No meals in-house but plenty of options nearby. Fabulous concierge. Smallish bathroom but a walk-in wardrobe/dressing room is a nice touch. The hotel is totally pet-friendly.

Enjoyed my one night stay, pleasent quite hotel near busy Union Square. Good breakfast diner next store. Clean room but it was smallish, just room for a bed desk and nice size closet area. Friendly staff. No gym, but can use nearby gym for $15' Would stay again.

I stayed here whilst in the city for the San Francisco Marathon July 31st. The hotel has a great character in it's décor. The rooms are fine, very clean and the staff are very helpful on the reception. Location is perfect for all things in San Francisco. I'll be stayig here again for all my future visits to my favourite city.

Really nice little hotel near union square. It's near public transport so a great location. The rooms are a little small and out dated but that what makes it. The reception staff were really nice and friendly except the older gentleman on nights who didn't even say bye after checking out.

Ronnie N, Manager at The Cartwright Hotel - Union Square, BW Premier Collection, responded to this review
Hello and thank you for your review. I would like to apologize for the agent at the desk that did not acknowledge you. We are under renovation as well so this will address the dated rooms. We appreciate the feedback. Have a great day! Cheers.

Clean, updated boutique style hotel. Easily accessible from a main street. Not very noisy considering location to busy area. Very nice accommodating front desk staff, concierge and housekeeping team. Well priced for San Fran, small rooms but goal was to sightsee and stay outside.

"Decent value, expect some tradeoffs"

3
16/09/2016

Decent value, small hotel room size but on par for historic hotels in SanFrancisco. Good coffee and tea selection in the morning. Things I wasn't pleased about - management permitted guests to smoke right outside the door, when laws state a minimum distance of 15 feet. Walked through a gauntlet of smokers each evening, bummer. Other surprise was the street noise - although I was on the 5th floor (really 4 floors up) two persons sounded as if they were talking right outside my window. Noise from trolley was 'authentic SFO experience' but not really muted by the solution, which was provided earplugs. good thing I was exhausted from work and walking around the great city. I'd stay here again in a pinch if traveling solo for business as the location was good but it's hard to recommend when I've stayed in some wonderful hotels in the same city for the same cost. Staff was excellent on check in and departure and overall very friendly.

Ronnie N, Manager at The Cartwright Hotel - Union Square, BW Premier Collection, responded to this review
Hello Jennifer thank you very much for your review and feedback. We apologize for the smoking right outside the door, rest assured we will address this. San Francisco is a busy city so unfortunately we get noise on the street more than usual. I will share your feedback with the team. Cheers.

"Perfect location, modern & clean"

4
09/09/2016

I stayed here for 6 nights and I'm glad I did. The location is perfect, so close to Union Square, shops, coffee shops etc. The room itself was one that had been refurbished so everything was quite new, modern and clean. There was some noise from the street at night even though I was on one of the higher floors, but not too bad. One negative was that the room doors are very old and heavy, and every morning and night I would hear other doors close very loudly. I tried to close mine quietly but it just doesn't happen. Toiletries in the bathroom were ok, but felt that the cleaners were a bit stingy with replacing bottles which were nearly used up. Overall a great place, and I'd stay there again.

Ronnie N, Manager at The Cartwright Hotel - Union Square, BW Premier Collection, responded to this review
Hello Tom, thank you very much for your review. We appreciate the feedback. I would like to apologize for the noisy doors. We will be sure to address this. I am glad you enjoyed the renovated rooms. Have a great day. Cheers.

We have just left after a 4 night stay at The Cartwright. Really couldn't fault this hotel for a city break. Great location by Union Square , right on the cable car route, easy to get about from here and all the shopping you could want on the doorstep. The hotel staff were all super helpful and welcoming. Edward was able to help us with our attraction tickets too. We found the hotel to be charming, it's only small and boutique style but with huge amounts of character and a nice feel to it. The log fire was burning in the mornings when it was chilly and a bit foggy outside. It all added to the atmosphere of the hotel. We enjoyed free coffee each morning in the lounge area before heading out for the day. Our room was spotlessly clean and tidy, cosy , nice white towels, iron and hairdryer came in handy and it was a bonus to have coffee in the room. Don't expect a huge room as this is an old building and is in keeping with the old style buildings which to us was much nicer than a big chain hotel that you can stay in anywhere in the world. This felt like San Francisco. Couldnt fault this hotel it was perfect for what we wanted from our city break. Thank you

Clean room. Friendly staff full of local knowledge. Although we had a small room it was sufficient. the only problem we incurred was a loud neighbour the last day we stayed. Old style and great. Very easy to get around the city. close to the centre of town.

The staff was great, and this hotel is definitely a nice place to stay. I was there for a business trip, but wasn't prepared for the lack of air conditioning - I should know better, but given it's August in SF I really wasn't thinking about it. 26/08/2016

Located in a prime location just blocks from Union Square, this hotel has every opportunity to become a classic and desirable stay location. Unfortunately, during the renovation process, they forgot to consider the overall comfort of their clientele. Rooms were extremely small, with the bathroom so tight a tall person would need to be a contortionist to fit. The staff was very attentive, and knowledgeable.

Ronnie N, Manager at The Cartwright Hotel - Union Square, BW Premier Collection, responded to this review
Hello and thank you very much for your review. As you stated we are renovating the hotel and as is with all construction it can get a bit noisy. We apologize for the inconvenience but once we are complete it will make the overall experience a better one. Have a great day.

From the moment we first arrived Nancy on the front desk went out of her way to be incredibly helpful and accommodating, we really can't thank her enough. From ensuring we were happy with our room selection, hers and the front desk and concierge staff were all amazing and I felt compelled to review the hotel. It has been recently taken over and unfortunately does not serve breakfast, but due to one of the best locations, right near Union Square and ChinaTown, there were dozens of options on the doorstep. The hotel itself was clean and nice, it could do with a little touching up here and there but for a city centre hotel we were so impressed. Restaurant recommendations and a transfer back to the airport all sorted out in our best interests, great service. Recommended!

We had a nice three day stay here. Perfect location to get out and about. Not bad having a wine store next door and great restaurants within blocks. The hotel is clean and well maintained. It is an old property given new life. Of course it isn't cheap, but then nothing is in this neighborhood. The beds were comfortable. The hot water took a bit of time to arrive (fifth floor room). Great coffee in the morning in the lobby. No restaurant, but nice diners nearby for breakfast. Not luxury, but comfortable.

The Carwright is lovely older hotel with lots of history. It's located in Union Square which is close to food, drinks and shopping. It's easy to catch any kinds of transportation. The staff was wonderful and the room was newly remodeled and very nice. It only has coffee and tea for breakfast which was a bit of a bummer but there is plenty places close enough to grab something.

first time visit to S.F. and we decided to use city transit (no rental car for this trip). we booked this hotel in advance and got a great deal. then, we found it was absolutely a GREAT deal. located a block from cable car stop and easy access to the bus routes. friendly staff welcomed us and helped us with questions during our stay. if you're looking for an almost European type hotel, this is one. they are retrofitting the rooms throughout, so we found a new, comfortable bed; work desk (didn't need it) and clean bathroom that were well fit in a smaller than usual space. if you are going to a hotel for the view, for built-in attractions or to spend all your time in the hotel, then you probably won't be comfortable here. this was built years ago and has been maintained well for travelers looking a good night's rest. we would recommend this to anyone asking and would book again when we return.

16/08/2016

The weather was cool and we left our window open the entire time. This was where we stayed for our 10th anniversary and we weren't disappointed. It's an old hotel (small rooms), but our room was remodeled and modern. They are called boutique hotels for a reason, and you must stay in one when you go to San Fran. There was a bit of street noise, but honestly, the noise was of the cable cars going by chiming their bell. That's pretty awesome. There is a Walgreen's and 7/11 across the street and a lot of restaurants too. City bus 30 is a block away and you can take it and any other city bus for a half day for $2.25 to fisherman's wharf. The staff was fantastic and very professional. There is also a fireplace in the back, that was nice when we met a friend from the city. It was a cold night so it was nice sitting next to a fire to talk to her.

"I'd give it an Excellent but..."

15/08/2016

We stayed here two nights and talk about central. You can pretty much walk everywhere, the cable car (trolly) just on the corner, China town a block over, the Financial district (great restaurants) a couple blocks, Fishermans Wharf a 20 minute walk. Excellent location. The hotel is old, and a little tired, certainly eclectic, but what a sweet boutique hotel. The room we had was small, antiquated but so cute. we loved it. It was all we needed and seriously, there is so much to do we really didn't do much but sleep and change clothes. The staff were welcoming and very helpful. I mentioned that I'd give it an "Excellent" but the hotel is currently renovating and while it was noisy at time, it was not unreasonable and they were very aware of quite time. I read a few negative comments about the renos from others but seriously, they are doing what they have to do to make this an even better place to stay so to those people I say "tolerance and understanding." I would DEFINITELY go back and stay there.

"Excellent staff and very comfortable bed"

12/08/2016

An older style hotel with plenty of charm and a very comfortable bed. The staff were outstanding. A number of staff went out of their way to assist with late night transport arrangements to get me to the hotel when no taxis were available and the next day they confirmed an interstate tour booking for me while I was out on another long day tour and unable to do the confirmation myself. Thoroughly enjoyed my stay.

"Great location and with lots of character."

08/08/2016

I chose this hotel primarily for its location - central to San Francisco's hub so easy to visit all the things we wanted to. The hotel is old and certainly has character, much like the chap who checked us in! He could have done with being a tad more welcoming. Our room was overlooking a wall which was a trifle disappointing but it was big enough and clean and the bed was comfy. We hadn't come to look out of the window after all. Plenty of hot water, soft towels and ample toiletries were great. No microwave nor fridge and only two sachets of coffee and powdered milk provided per day, but there is a 7-11 right opposite the hotel that does great take out coffee so it really wasn't a problem. Lori's diner is two doors away and we got discount vouchers to use there so that's where we had breakfast. I'm glad we chose this hotel as it really was in a great location and it was perfect for our four day stay. A charming man did offer to help us book trips etc (sorry, can't remember his name). Recommended

"Cute boutique hotel in prime location"

04/08/2016

I've been to SF before, but my husband had not. We were in town for our anniversary. I wanted to find a hotel that was central to all of the places I knew he'd want to visit in the city, so Union Square made the most sense. This hotel is a couple of blocks from Chinatown (one of my favorite areas of the city), one block north of Union Square, and about 4-5 blocks from the Powell Street BART station, which makes it easy to take the BART to/from the airport. This hotel is very cute and clean. The pillows were very comfortable as well. The staff was extremely friendly and helpful to us - very welcoming and accommodating. The room was on the smaller side, but having stayed in larger cities before (SF, LA, NYC, Paris, etc.), it's what I expected. We always had good water pressure and hot water. The hotel is in the process of being renovated, and I think we were in the "older" section as our room seem a bit on the "tired" side. Even so, it was still fine for us and our needs - we aren't too picky as long as the space is clean (though since it was our anniversary, it would have been a fun perk to be upgraded :) though of course that's not necessary and not anything we expected). The only cons were: the mattress was VERY uncomfortable, and there was no fridge/microwave in the room. That was a bummer, because when we'd eat out, we had a ton of leftovers (and at SF prices, we really didn't want to waste anything). We'd really have had liked the option to bring food back to snack on later. I would recommend this hotel and would definitely stay here again. We enjoyed our stay at this cute hotel.

"Brilliant customer service"

27/07/2016

The hotel is very well located, a few minutes walk from union square (5 mins if that). The rooms were adequately sized although the bathroom we had was a little small. The decor in the rooms is a bit tired however the hotel is currently in the process of being refurbished (there was no noise or disturbance from this). We were shown the standard of the new rooms and they looked amazing. They are not ready for rent yet...possibly early 2017. So ask about them if you are considering booking for next year! I would suggest that you take earplugs as depending on which side of the hotel you are on you may get some street noise at night. There was absolutely no noise from inside the hotel though. Our room was right opposite the lift as well but no problems with that at all. The beds were very comfy and housekeeping was very good too. As I said in the title, the customer service was brilliant. Every member of staff was polite, sincere and attentive. That scores highly in my book. We felt really well looked after and nothing was too much trouble. There is a mini business centre there, handy for printing boarding passes (this is free to use). Tea and coffee is set up from 7am until 10 am each morning. There is a coffee machine in the room as well. The lounge area is comfortable and there is a rather large fire which I never thought I would need to be sat next to (how wrong I was after coming in from the cold, windy evenings!) I would definitely return to this hotel. It's about a 25 minute taxi ride from the airport and it cost about $60 one way. We also took advantage of booking a bus tour through the hotel and we were given $10 off per person for the 1 day tour. All in all, the Cartwright Hotel helped make our 3 night stay in SF a very enjoyable one!

Ronnie N, Manager at The Cartwright Hotel - Union Square, BW Premier Collection, responded to this review
Thank you very much for the feedback. I am glad you were able to get a look at the new rooms, we are excited to complete the project. I will be sure to share this with the team. Have a great day!

21/07/2016

We stayed here on the final stretch of a 2 week tour in the states. The hotel staff were very welcoming and friendly on our Check in and we were given access to our room at this time despite it being 8am. This was very much appreciated as we were tired after an overnight flight from Hawaii. The roaring fire and complimentary tea & coffee was great and much needed. The rooms were very small but that's to be expected in the city. A huge closet to keep luggage and clothes in though. Bed was comfy and shower was decent enough. Room was basic with a tv and coffee maker & hairdryer. But we didn't spend much time here at all. The location is excellent, 5 mins to hop on off bus stop, few mins from union square, 10 mins to Chinatown. Good value and great location

the hotel was centrally located for all planned activity. although the choices for breakfast restaurants was limited to one. the entertainment choices were many, although the streets were very crowded, and noisy, the hotel maintained a level of peace and quit, was able to afternoon nap!

"Good location...rooms dated"

First off San Francisco is an e pensive city and hotels are not cheap. The hotel is in a good location only few hundred meters from Union Square and all it shops. There is a cable car stop right at the corner that will take you all the way to Fishermans Warf. Diner next door but it is over priced for the quality of food. The hotel itself is an old building and undergoing refurbishments. The lobby is nice and clean and there is a lift service to the rooms. The big downfall are the rooms. Our room was small and outdated. The bathroom was right inside the door and was very small. Shower was hot but bath uncomfortable to sit in. Our room had a heater that used come on at night and would make some loud noises and really you didn't need the heat on in the middle of summer. There is no air con in the rooms so it can be hot in the summer. Our room was quiet dusty and the end of the bed was all frayed. The bed was comfortable and room service came daily. It was just like the room needed a real deep clean. One really annoying thing is there is no safe in the room you have to put it in a box at reception and everything you need money or passports you needed to go down and you have everything out in the open in the reception. Overall the location is great but I'd hold off on booking again until all the refurbishments are finished before I'd try it again.

Hello and thank you very much for your review. We do appreciate the feedback. As you stated we are under renovation so we will address the issues you had with the room during your stay. Our safety deposit boxes are located at the desk but are not accessible by guests or the desk itself since the guest has one key and the desk has one as well. It takes both keys to open any safe. Thank you again and have a great day!
