Would definitely stay here again. Fantastic location, walking distance to Marvel Stadium, DFO, Aquarium, Trams, shops restaurants, Casino. Skydeck Train station. Clean, comfortable, lovely, helpful staff. Nice licensed Cafe open early till late. Highly recommend.
Bathrooms are built in cupboards, shower door ways are about 35cm wide. We approached the staff about my husband not being able to fit in the shower, their comment was “it is an old building” and organised for access to another room on another floor for my husband to shower in only. The room smell was musty 🤮 It was like an overpriced backpackers. We didn't even stay, we stayed just down the road in another hotel where it was $50 cheaper and the room was neater, cleaner, didn't smell and the bathroom was 6 x bigger
Really nice hotel in the most perfect location. Public transportations (especially the free trams) are just a few meters from the hotel, grocery store and bars, and several good coffee shops are also close by. The room was clean and had all the amenities needed for a wonderful stay. The staff was kind, friendly, and helpful. We had a fantastic start at the Best Western Hotel in Melburne!
Be sure to request a room with a window when booking and confirm on check-in. The room was tiny, no window, and the bathroom was dirty. Staff at reception were unhelpful. Didn't feel comfortable staying here as a solo traveller. There was also an issue on check-in which they failed to communite until I arrived after travelling for 24 hours and wasn't allowed access to my room.
Courtyard rooms are quiet, very comfortable and easily accessible on ground floor. Location is excellent as close to Southern Cross Station and tram transport. Good for local pick up for day trips/tours. Restaurant located inside hotel has good food, value for money and great friendly service. Will be returning
The horrible place in the world. Untidy rooms, non working appliances, horrible and incompetent staff, parking issues with car broken into.. the list can go on... Just choose any other hotel except this one and u will be very happy !!!!!!!.
We had a courtyard room and it was fabulous! Light and bright! Room is compact but cosy with everything you need. Great location for exploring the city, close to transport. Staff were wonderful, very friendly! Highly recommend next time you are needing a city stay for work or pleasure!
Great hotel value for money. Great location and super easy to get around the city.Would recommend this hotel for a home away from home. The room.was first class and was well presented. The staff on the front reception desk provided us with great advice and directions to get around the city
Basic budget hotel showing wear and tear with tiny bathrooms and a broken lift, but the price was reasonable, and location suited our stay. Helpful friendly staff. Earplugs were offered as is very close to trainline. Room was serviced daily and bed was comfy.
First impression from Mustafa (receptionist) who chcknus in was nice. He was accommodating and professional. However when we entered the room we were surprised about the sized even though it has been mentioned in their website but we understand that it was small but never thought that the bathroom was so uncomfortable to use. My boyfriend is a 6 footer so when he sits in, his knee is touching the sink. The running was dirty . Other hotel staff are not friendly and accommodating. The only good thing we stayed here because it's in the city center and near to everything where you can just walk around to nearby malls, restaurants and other places and parks.
Mouse dropping on bed when I arrived. I cleaned it off. I was unaware hotel allowed pets (this info should be provided on all booking sites) and was woken up by dog barking in nearby room at 11.03pm and took some time to get back to sleep. Reported this next morning and told hotel is pet friendly. I will never return to this hotel.
I enjoyed my 6 nights stay at Best Western City Melbourne in June 2024. Good Location. 5-minute walk from Southern Cross Station. 1 minute to Free Zone Tram #70 & 75 and 3 minute walk to Free Zone Tram #109. There is a METRO Supermarket at Southern Cross Station. I took SkyBus to and fro Melbourne airport to Southern Cross Station and the journey was about 30mins. There are Macdonald and KFC – 5 minutes walk from hotel. My room is for solo traveler and I found the size is small but good enough. All things are within reach. Bed is comfortable. Good area for hanging clothes with good hangers. Small Fridge, Kettle, Iron & Board, Hairdryer are the appliances provided. No Free Bottles of Mineral Water. Bathroom is small but good enough for me as a plus size lady. I love the water pressure. Hot showers are great after a day out during winter. However, I was shocked about the extremely small basin at the corner on top of the toilet bowl. It was the only minus point for the unit but I got used to it after 2 days. Heater was also working well. I have parcel from local pharmacy and it was received well by the reception and pass to me in good order. I will most probably stay here if I am visiting Melboure again. Thank you.
The hotel itself was lovely, had a great little place on the ground floor for meals and drinks. If you are a bigger person you may not fit in the shower door as the room we stayed in the door was about 350mm for the opening, reasonably clean room with coffee and tea, iron and hairdryer, there is a 7eleven on the corner, of course, good location to walk to attractions if you don't mind walking a few k's. My only down side was the trains that ran throughout the night keeping me from getting a good sleep. Apart from that is a great value for money hotel with lovely polite staff.
Stayed here on many occasions. Located only a short walk from Spencer Street Skybus terminal and close to shops and many eating places. Good rooms for the price and staff always friendly.
I had a few nights here pre & post an adventure from Melb. I had a matchbox room which was just perfect for what I needed. Compact but very clean & warm. Location was great. Staff were lovely. And Stubby Cafe/Bar had great food & friendly staff. That was a bonus.
The motel is is a great location just down from Southern Cross Station. Easy walking distance to shops and restaurants and tourist attractions. The staff are welcoming and friendly and I highly recommend staying here.
The hotel itself is in a great location, good food and service. It's a tad loud made it hard to sleep and everytime I came back to my room it smelt. The cleanliness of the room could have been better especially the bathroom.
This hotel has everything you need close to restaurants shops train station handy for airport shuttle The staff go out of there way to help you and make your staff great Being going there for over 10 years
Impressed by the accuracy of the website photo to the actual room! Staff are extremely obliging Fabulous location. Step outside to a train or tram, or an easy walk to city. The room is an adequate size for a very comfortable sleep. I would not hesitate to recommend this hotel
I've stayed here a few times, it's good value for money for the location straight next to Southern Cross station. It's a bit small so good for single travellers or couples just sleeping there and chilling. 24 hour reception is good for peace of mind.
hotel is good to stay in and very near of southern train station as well very near to all main city. overall hotel is good to stay. peace environments. no any disturbance. Management looks perfect. thank you all staff mainly thanks manager
Best “just need a place to sleep” I remember. All the basics I needed. At first I was concerned about being in the centre of the hotel with a window out into the hall but it meant no street noise. It did mean some light leakage overnight with no curtain capping. When someone is showering in the room above it can be noisy but it's easily tolerated. The bed is quite firm however I slept with no discomfort. None of these are complaints; they are observations for others to consider.
Excellent location, Convenient for walking around the city and main transport is 3-5 minutes away. I lived on the first floor in a room with a balcony. there was no view of the street, but this did not matter since I only spent the nights at the hotel. Friendly staff. Many of the city's important attractions are within 20-30 walks or a couple of tram stops
Excellent location, excellent staff, rooms clean and well stocked. Close to public transport and close to free tram zone. Many food and drink options in immediate area.I would highly recommend this hotel.
Very good place to stay as we needed to be at the airport - used the Skybus as just over the road from Southern Cross Station - for an early morning flight. Rooms and bathrooms are small but priced accordingly.
Had an excellent stay at this hotel. The rooms were clean and the location of the hotel had me in walking distance to the conference center for work. The hotel was very close to the airbus and tram stations, so it was easy to use the public transit, and I was within walking distance to a number of great sights within the city. I would definitely recommend a room here for anyone who needs to be in proximity to the conference center but still wants to walk into the city or by the river.
Located very close to Southern Cross Station, and within the free tram zone. Staff were very helpful and available 24/7. Rooms are relatively small, and no view to speak of, but when you're not spending much time at the hotel, this isn't important. The room was clean and nicely decorated, and had everything you'd need, including a heatpump/AC. The door into the shower is very narrow. I am not a large person, and I needed to turn sideways to comfortably fit through the shower door. The lift is also very slow for only 3 floors. Overall, lovely hotel - would recommend and would stay again.
Excellant location within walking distance of Southern cross station and tram stop around corner easily accessibly for people with disabiliatities except for step leading to where shower area as could trip on that
The staff are brilliant…nothing is too much trouble. Beds and pillows are very comfortable. Location is brilliant for exploring this vibrant city. Free City Circle Tram is very close. Noise-wise, you wouldn't know you're in a city.
As a plus size women I found the shower very hard to get into. The size of the shower itself was fine but the door was way to small. Even turning sideways I only just fit. Myself and my 2 friends I stayed with are all very different sizes from a 16-26 and we all had trouble
when I arrived I found out the room was at the ground floor, behind the reception and the only window was facing the internal corridor The room was filthy, dust everywhere, garbage and dust under the bed, the chair was broken and dirty, no power outlet next to the desk to work, no power cord extension available at the reception When I reported they just vacuum the room for the night and then cleaned it up the next day but did not think to move me to another room Definitely the windowless feature is something you want to know about at booking time The room did not look anywhere closer to the one in the website picture
Extremely disappointed with this room. Very small, nothing like the pictures, no windows in the room. All pictures of the rooms online had windows in the bedrooms, we were on the bottom floor and had no natural sunlight and had no view of anything at all. Pictures online also made the rooms look a lot bigger than what they actually were, felt very closed in.Very small bathroom, barely any room at all.
I only stayed for one night as a stop-over but it was a relief to arrive and find a room that was reasonably spacious, with a nice shower facility and a large, comfortable bed. The staff were fantastic.
We recently stayed at the Best Western in downtown Melbourne. I have nothing bad to say about the hotel but to be honest nothing that would make it a must place stay either. If you are looking for a downtown hotel it is fine. The rooms are very small, the amenities are nothing special and the staff did not distinguish themselves in a positive way
We were a bit reluctant to book a "shoebox" room, but as we just needed a place to sleep we booked it. The hotel was clean, staff friendly and helpful and in my opinion the hotel was quirky in a good way! My husband's CPAP machine broke down in the night, so I went to reception in the middle of the night to get another room to be able to sleep. I got a "shoebox" room. I was concerned at first as to what it would be like, but it was great. The hotel on the night we stayed was quiet. We will definitely stay here again when next in Melbourne.
The hotel is located near the corner of Spencer and Flinders Streets in the CBD. Trams run along Flinders Street and also the nearby Collins Street and Bourke Street. It is 3 blocks from Southern Cross Station which offers country and metropolitan train services. The hotel has a restaurant although this was closed when i was there. My room was clean and tidy. They have tea and coffee making facilities, a fridge, air conditioning and a TV.
The customer service is very good the room is very large and clean the bathroom is very small and I couldn't get in the shower I was very disappointed because I like to have a shower in the morning I understand that couldn't make the bathroom bigger but the shower was so small and I really understand the hotel is old but really think that they should've made the bathroom little bigger would I stay there again no until if they have made the bathroom little bigger
Paid about A$175/nite for room with a brick wall for a view. Beds/linens/pillows were all comfortable. Mini-split a/c-heater worked flawlessly and quiet. One of the smallest bathrooms I've ever had in a hotel. The shower and sink were Lilliputian. There was a working 32" TV in the room. Carpet in the room and hallways leading to room were worn out and showed signs of the wood and/or tile underneath. Elevator was very small, snail like and to put it bluntly, pretty filthy. Front desk people were helpful with info and fairly attentive. Even though the hotel was in a fairly good downtown location, with plenty of small stores and mom and pop restaurants within a couple of blocks, I would probably stay somewhere else in the future. If you just want a place to sleep, price is gonna be fairly competitive for the area. If you want a decent place to relax and unwind after your downtown adventures, well, you be the judge.
Great location but due to old hotel design the rooms are hit and miss. Room overlooked a courtyard and directly into the room opposite. Room was tired but reasonably clean. Location excellent as easily walk to Flinders Southbank and Quay for excellent shopping..
For the price point there are much better options arround. The rooms are the smallest i have seen. The ground floor rooms have no windows. I got the top floor room. The shower didn't work. The room had a funky smell. The aircon was hardly operational. My room was on top floor which has ceiling windows which can't be closed off. The street lights kept me up.
The room was tiny but I don't really care since I'm a single guy. The price and location were both absolutely fantastic, being 5m walk to Southern Cross station and 5m walk to The Crown casino/MCEC. I plan to stay here every year going forward when going to PAX.
Best Western is very conveniently located on Spencer Street near Southern Cross Station, Flinders Street and Riverbank/Casino area. Had a Courtyard room which was very quiet and could enjoy a drink outside. Bed and pillows very comfortable and great shower. Front desk staff (24 hours) most helpful. Oliver's REstaurant undergoing updates so closed this time but hopefully open on my next visit. Recommended to be comfortable place to stay. Good value for money
Good place to stay with pets in CBD. Close to casino and Yarra river. Courtyard very small only good for pit stop for pet. Rooms small, but cosy enough. Used booking.com to book accommodation. Only problem was price for pet as this wasn't included when I paid, not happy with process. Charge never more for public holiday, even thou leg I was staying a few days before
Very good accommodation for the price. Helpful staff, problems rectified swiftly and a great location amongst many food outlets, short stroll to the Skybus terminal, tram stop and supermarkets. Stayed here a number of times and will continue to do so.
We stayed for 3 nights in a 'Shoebox Room' - yeah that's the room name. Double bed. Damn, bed and pillows are cosy and comfortable. I had really good night sleep. Room size is enough for 2-3 nights stay, especially if you are always out and about for the tour. There is a window but not much view, we did not mind! Still a bit chilly, so we didn't have to use the aircon much, but it does work well. Towels are changed and rooms are cleaned everyday as per request. Noise can be heard a bit from the other room like people flushing or taking a shower late at night or too early in the morning, nothing major that disrupted us or had to be reported anyway. The bathroom, yes it is small. Even for me a 163cm female, (55kg) struggled struggled in the space. But it is manageable, not the end of the world. I'd say.... toilet, sink and shower is about 1m x 2.5m? Water pressure and hot water works fine! Flush works fine. Overall, would come back again for a short 1-2 nights visit I'd say! Recommended.
basic room for short stay acceptable, except the size of the shower/bathroom was tiny. the opening door way to enter the shower was only approx 300/400mm!! The parking option provided by the hotel was extremely cheap compared to the rest of the alternatives within the area. the room was very neat and clean. the service was professional and courteous.
Great location, Trams out front and southern cross train station is a 4 minute walk up the same street. There is a Woolworths there too. Only a 5 min scenic stroll to the casino and Free city circle tram with great tourist information was also close. Had a room available for my stay even though I checked in an hour early. Room was cosy with a lovely view of Spencer street. Staff were very helpful and friendly. Would definitely recommend to friends and I will stay again if in Melbourne.
Best Western Melbourne City Centre offers great, affordable accommodation close to Southern Cross Train Station and a number of convenient free city center tram stops. There are convenience stores close to the hotel as well as a number of cafe and take away options and it is a short walk over the river to the Crown Complex. My room was clean, quiet, well appointed and my bed was comfortable.
Great value, awesome location. Very neat and clean , but small room. Motel itself is set out nicely and is clean and fresh looking. Shower door was very narrow and I couldn't imagine a pregnant woman or a solid male even fitting through it.
This was the Pensione hotel, very small rooms with double beds that are incredibly hard and too small for a 187cm man. Lost too much sleep from the poor mattress. No breakfast facilities and an incredibly slow lift. The rooms were dirty, poorly maintained and in desperate need of renovation. A budget hotel but with a premium price.
The room was way too small and bathroom was also. The staff wasn't very helpful and rude at times. The only positive thing was the location. For the price of the room can find better elsewhere.Definitely not value for the money.
Living far away from the city, when I had a corporate box at the footy for work at night we decided to stay in the city, we found this little gem and loved it. The website was honest, the rooms where very small, but they where lovely and clean and comfortable and suited us perfectly for the night. Great value for money.
No room service Soap scum left everywhere Lots of repairs needing to be done Several room changes due to broken items Rooms definitely not soundproof Prepare to walk up/down stairs instead of lift. Shower door extremely small. Stay elsewhere!!!!!
Hotel was adequate for our needs for a footy weekend, being close to Marvel stadium, southern cross station and Flinders st trams. Shower door was extremely narrow and would not suit the larger person. Beds were very comfortable.
It's a funky little hotel. Typical Melbourne style retro refurbished building. Good parking discounts was welcomed because parking in the city can get pricey. I'd be back there if I was going to stay in the city again.......
One tram stop to Spencer St Stn or a 10 min walk (if you are fit with a light suitcase). The noise of trains crossing the iron bridge is pretty constant, but bearable. Many eating choices in the area.
I love the small rooms. Very clean, really friendly and helpful staff. The lobby and building has simple urban with historical charm. Close to trains which lulled me to sleep. Close to everything I needed..food
Stayed in a matchbox room, perfect for a solo traveller under $100. Comfy bed, very clean and quiet. Window looks into a courtyard so no natural light but otherwise okay. Great location & friendly reception.
Is hotel expectations were very low when I arrived my room was very small shower was like a prison shower jet washes, I stayed for nights and when they came to remake my room they just remade the bed did not give me clean sheets even though they were dirty do not recommend
Arrived here from Wales UK to find the gentleman at reception was very polite and helpful. Our room was clean and comfortable and we enjoyed our stay .Only downfall was they didn't have any breakfast. But i would diffently stay here again
I stayed at the Best Western for a couple of Days on the Long Weekend as it was in a spot close to the train station and all the other amenities like the trams casino and shops within walking distance.
Location near Southern Cross station was convenient. Staff were very helpful, the room was clean but it and the bathroom were too small to be comfortable for two adults. The closure of the Oliviers cafe was inconvenient.
The shower is tiny, the walls are thin, the traffic never stops, the cafe is closed and there are homeless people al around outside. Convenient for the rail station but you suffer with city traffic/siren noise
Close to Southern Cross Station, Casino, Exhibition Centre and within easy walk to city centre. Probably one of the best price hotels with the Melbourne city area. Rooms are small but light and airy and well maintained.
Met up with a few friends from all around Melbourne to visit the Lume, enjoy lunch and Gold Class movie in the evening. My friend from Bendigo and I shared a twin room and chose Best Western 16 Spencer St based on price The room was compact but clean, fresh and well appointed for just over $100 for twin beds on a Sunday night. Staff were most accommodating and the location is great - a couple of minutes walk from Southern Cross station, just across the river to Crown, the Convention Centre, DFO and any number of other popular venues. Can't fault this smart little hotel or the lovely staff who looked after us.
Stayed in a shoebox room. It was exactly how it was described. Room was very clean and bed was very comfortable. Bathroom was tad small but it was fine for me. Walking distance to crown casino, train station and DFO. I would definitely come back again.
Great location, close to south bank and southern cross station. Hotel was clean and bed was comfortable. The bathroom was ridiculously small with the toilet bowl about 40cm from the shower door and the shower door less then 45cm wide. You have to enter the shower sideways and you defiantly have to dry off and dress in the room. The shower stalls in caravan parks are larger then the whole bathroom.
I had a single bed room and booked last minute due to emergent compassion visit - bearing in mind it was public holiday weekend the room was TINIY, aptly named the matchbox had to step sideways to get into the shower. Was clean and acceptable for a night only if no other options
Enjoyed stay, met my expectations on value for money, compared to hotels in vicinity, in this great convenient location close to the second biggest railway station and the Crown casino and South Wharf.
Close to the station, close to cafes and a small supermarket, good place to stay in the city with famiily case of needing a early morn or late night bus, train or flight. Affordable pricing but extremely clean rooms with good complimentary wifi. Also a luggage storage service in case after check in need to spend hours in the city before catching a late evening or night bus or flight.
Very happy with the friendly staff and room was always very comfortable and clean! Being so close to Southern Cross station was also very handy. Would definitely stay again on my next trip to Melbourne!
Spontaneous trip to Melbourne to enjoy time away from home to explore the city, and it provided a simple, professional and a positive welcome made a difference. Cleanliness was absolutely exceptional.
We stayed here the night before we caught the Overland train to Adelaide. The main reason for the choice was location as it is only a short walk to Souther Cross station and we needed to be there reasonably early. This hotel is fairly old, rebranded from the Pensione, but it looks like it has been updated inside. The room was spacious and well decorated, however if you were a large person you would have had difficulty getting into the shower as the door was less than half the normal width. There is a lot of noise coming from outside, despite the windows being double glazed. I originally thought it was the tram running past the door, but I realised later it was the trains, whic are also very close. Luckily the trains stop running over night so the noise was not really a problem, but a room at the back would be quieter. Overall, I would stay again.
We stayed in the Best Western in Melbourne for one night. The room was very small and didn't have any windows but was fine for the price we paid. It was clean and comfortable. Staff were friendly and it was in a good location close to all amenities. It also had a nice reception area.
the hotel was in an easily accessible position to transport plus town. the room was small but all I needed. the room was very clean and everything worked. I could hear the nearby trains in the morning but it was not uncomfortable. I was impressed with the aircon which was very quiet and efficient!
I stayed in the 'Shoebox' room with double bed. It was very adequate for me and spacious enough for my one night stay. The room was clean and had a window that can be opened, as well as good air conditioning so you can change the air. The bathroom is quite small but facilities good and everything I needed. For a larger person the shower might be a tight fit. Toiletries were provided, along with nice linen.
wonderful location because of the covenience of public transport, eateries and gardens, also night entertainment, and shopping.Very pleased with the price, much cheaper, than,i expected, clean comfortable room.Friendly, courteous, kind staff.
Highly recommended. Budget price but big bed in a spacious room, tea and coffee making facilities included decaf, spotless room and quite good toiletries. Shower small and the hotel is near the railway station, so there is some noise from trains from 6/7 am onwards. However, five minutes walk from Southern Cross Station and located on major tram lines makes the location perfect. Would have liked to try their cafe but it was still closed due to COVID restrictions. However, no shortage of options in the neighborhood. Last but not least, exceptionally helpful staff (thanks Dave!).
The hotel is difficult to get to, security parking is offered but both difficult to find and quite some distance from the hotel particularly if you are elderly or infirm in any way. The staff are pleasant but don't seem to know what to do. The ground floor accommodation is offered as pet friendly but unclean as a result, whilst checking out there was dog poo on the floor at my feet! The worst part was the ensuite in our room, it was quite literally smaller than some of those you would find in modern caravans. Our overall experience was very poor and we would not recommend this hotel to anyone.
Me and my partner booked a one night stay for Friday 4th March. We booked this room on 3rd March and it expressed that the payment failed, I reinserted the payment details and had a confirmation email. We made our way to the city on the train and received a second email saying our booking had been cancelled. I rang and enquired about this and was told that the payment was cancelled as the booking was under my name but the card under my partners name. I asked if they wanted me to repay using either another card or to speak to my partner on the phone to confirm this, they said they could do this but the prices have increased now. We originally booked a king room at $185 and he informed me that the king rooms aren't available now and only doubles can be booked at $210, I asked why our price hasn't been honoured and why we are now getting a smaller room at an increased price. He just explained that this is what's happened and it can't be helped.
Shoebox indeed but I was happy. The room was described as a shoebox. It was indeed small and had no window other than into the hallway. However it had aircon and an ensuite and a TV and was clean. For $70 approx in such a central location it's good value
After booking a room to celebrate my husbands birthday, we arrived on the Friday late afternoon. We got changed and went out for dinner. Next morning I went to have a shower, I'm not a big woman by any means but I had to squeeze through the approx 14 inches wide. shower door. MThen my husband tried to get in and being a large man, he couldn't fit. I went down to reception to ask for a room change only to be told that it would cost extra. It is a basic human right to have a shower. He called the “manager” only to be told that he was correct and that we could have a new room the next day because he couldn't rent out ours as it wasn't clean and he couldn't get a cleaner in in time. Never ever have I been treated so badly. Never will stay here again and will make sure I tell everyone about our poor treatment. DO NOT STAY HERE
I got the shoebox room for a friend & me to sleep in. It is a compact room but for all the amenities we get, along with the cleanliness and the internet speed, it was so worth it. The location was spot on (3 min walk from Southern Cross!) and the staffs were so so lovely. will definitely come back :)
I have stayed there for 2 nights, which the room was well facilitated, good housekeeping and comfortable to stay. Would definitely rate this as 5 stars. The price was economically affordable and well located.
Had a "matchbox" room. Was exactly as described on web site. Enough room for one Room was clean and tidy. Good size bathroom. Excellent shower. Close to Southern Cross station. Would definetly stay again.
The room was clean, the beds were comfy with nice clean sheetds. The front desk had wonderful service and nice and kind when one of our 'keys' wouldnt work. Got it fixed nice and quick. Its a great location that was pretty affordable. Close to Crown and shopping at DFO. Would stay again.
Checked into a low budget option room. Not expecting any frills. Merely a clean comfy bed to sleep in. Drug paraphernalia was left on the bench of the room making me quite uncomfortable and question if the room was cleaned at all.
Ideal location for transport and city. Great staff. Good value for money however, we booked the kingsize room expecting space. The bed and the room were fine, however the en suite and in particular the shower door were so small it actually caused me pain to squeeze in and out. If I were going to stay longer than the 2 nights booked I would have checked out and moved to another hotel for this reason only. Knowing this is the reason I would not book again. Bear in mind we have stayed at hotels in Hong Kong where space is at a premium and they were luxurious compared to these shower facilities.
Stayed 5 nights Reception staff all very helpful Hotel located close to Trams, 7 Eleven, Walking distance to Woolworths, Convention & Exhibition centre & Crown. Room small clean neat tidy. Tv & Bar fridge worked very well. Bed very comfortable plus air con. Bathroom extra small tho. 25 min walk into city 25 minutes walk to Docklands.
i was greatly disgusted with the level; of customer support service of the manager at the best western i felt so upset and will never bookin another night at the best-western hotel in Melbourne due to the lack of customer support and professionalism. many other google reviews by previous customer at the best western Melbourne show the same problem exists and dissatisfaction with management
This hotel is in a great location. It was in walking distance to everything we needed. The staff were wonderful and the facilities were great. We will definitely stay again next time we're in Melbourne.
Great location in the CBD on Spencer Street, easy access to tram and Southern Cross train Station, leave the car at home all the staff are friendly and helpful has a roof top garden your own laundry facilities with washer and dryer on site and at $72 per night it's a great room price would not hesitate to stay here again
Tidy room with comfy bed, very good hotel located in a central location which is close to everywhere. A little bit outdated since the walls are not sound proof. The hot water could suddenly get very hot even if the cold water was on.
I stayed at the Best Western Hotel for a couple of months with my dog and I can honestly say that I was thrilled with the facilities, staff and amazing service. I highly recommend the Best Western Hotel for anyone travelling with a pet. They are awesome and I would like to thank the whole team for making our stay so comfortable.
The Best Western Hotel is located at the southern end of Spencer Street. Tram stops nearby Flinders Street or Collins Street. Small rooms, very small bathroom with sink so small can hardly use it very hard to fill a kettle. Bed comfortable room clean absolutely no view hardly tell time of day looking out the window. No room service cafe downstairs limited opening times and limit menu no nearby restaurants charge back either.
Location is in central Melbourne which makes it easy to get around. The room was basic but ok, had a bit of unpleasant awakening on the first morning, due to the noise cause by some construction and maintenance works happening right next to the hotel but this was promptly fixed by reception who change rooms for me. Nice staff: The English lady at reception was very polite and helpful!!
We had a bit of disappointment at the beginning because the room we chose wasn't very clean but after we complained, everything went well! People were very kind and made our staying comfortable! I must say this, that wasn't the room we were supposed to have but, because I asked for a closer room to the reception, they offered us this other room and didn't have the time to clean it properly!
A fantastic location within the free tram zone. Arrived at the hotel after taking the Skybus from the airport and then a very short walk from Southern Cross Station. I didn't have high expectations at all but was so very pleasantly surprised. The staff were lovely and so accommodating. We had heard of the 'shoebox rooms' so booked a king bed in a larger room and couldn't have been more pleased. Great size room with the most comfortable bed. As others have mentioned, the bathroom was small - very tiny washbasin and very small shower door but once in, the shower was a good size. There is a launderette on site which is most useful and a coffee shop which serves an excellent range of light bites and drinks. I would recommend this hotel 100% and would not consider staying anywhere else when in Melbourne.
The room was a shoebox triple with filthy windows and tired fittings. Tea/coffee with some milk in fridge (nice touch) was available and there was a desk to use a laptop at. Beds were ok but the bathroom was oh so small. I could barely get into the shower and washing my feet wasn't even a consideration! Reception staff were delightful and sorted me out with a dentist which was very kind of her and much appreciated. This is a budget hotel in a good location. WiFi was appalling and we resorted to going out of our room to the next door lift area to get a connection. In this day and age technology can easily provide wifi to every toom easily so what not spend some money and get it working everywhere? Currently if you are in Melbourne on business, don't stay here. Very budget hotel – avoid if you need wifi
Hotel was very close to all Melbourne has to offer. Staff were lovely too. Only thing I will say, is the shower in our room was a very tight squeeze to get in and out of, otherwise it was a comfortable and lovely stay
This hotel was a great surprise, large room with high ceilings, big bed and very comfortable but two mattress are push together to make one big bed. The room has everything you need, ironing board is a table board not a full ironing board. Check in staff (night staff) were fantastic and extremely friendly and helpful. Check out staff not as good. ⚠️The major problem with this hotel (my room) was that I couldn't use the shower because it was so small ,I couldn't get into it, the shower door isn't wide enough,I'm 6ft 3” but I've never had this problem before in any hotel. I don't think the shower is standard practice building. I'm not sure if every room has the same size bathroom?⚠️ I would have given this hotel 10/10 if it wasn't for that small shower.
Excellent Location and within walking distance to all areas of the city. Within free tram zone which is very handy also. Staff at check in and check out were absolutely lovely. Very disappointed with the size of the room. Being a Best Western Member for several years and having always stayed at Best Western Motels (world wide) and paying $156 for a room, I was quite surprised at how incredibly small the room was (room 207). The bathroom has a mini sink in it and if you are overweight at all, you will not fit in to the shower. That being said, the room was very clean and had tea/coffee (although we did not use this as the kettle was completely yellow/brown inside therefore chose to go to the 7/11 and get our hot drinks there). Would I stay here again? Probably not. Would I stay at Best Western Hotels again? Absolutely.
I needed a room that was close to transportation to get to the airport with some large luggage, so booked my final night at the Best Western on Spencer which is 1.5 blocks from the Southern Cross station. The European sized room was priced affordably and was right on the trams to get around in Free Zone my last day. Staff were helpful and room/hotel very clean. Recommend it for people who want to see Melbourne CBD and historic downtown, and a good launch point to other neighborhoods like St Kilda ( where we spent the majority of our week in Melbourne).
First room we were given we couldnt close the door or move once we had got out cases in it was that small, we were moved to a bigger room both this was at the front of the hotel and was very noisy day and night, it also had a bad odour when you opened the door, the general appearance of the room was shabby and dated and the bathroom was very small you had to turn on a side to squeeze through the shower door, it was also dirty inside the shower and could have benefited from a good clean.
my family and I have always stayed with Best Western when we visit the city of Melbourne (even when they were titled Pensione!) lovely and cosy rooms, great service and an overall amazing experience! I would definitely recommend this hotel, it is very conveniently placed in the heart of the city and right next to the free trams. 10/10, beautiful hotel!!
We had an eight night stay at the Best Western, Melbourne in January 2020 (arrived Jan 17th 2020). For me personally, it was my third stay at the Best Western (although it was known as the Pensione Hotel when I visited before in Jan 2015 and Jan 2016). For my wife and our friend though, it was their first stay here. With there being three of us, we booked a standard trio room. This consisted of one double bed, and one single bed. When I stayed here before I was a solo traveller and the 'double' room was quite small (but big enough) so I did fear that the standard trio room might be small too and the three of us might find it a little cramped. Not to worry though, the standard trio room is actually quite big and plenty big enough for three people. We also had a lot of natural light through the big windows with our room overlooking Spencer Street. There is a photo of a typical standard trio room (looks like our room!) within the TripAdvisor pictures. At the time of writing, on the front page of the Best Western profile, it is the fourth picture from the left on the bottom of the two rows. And, if you go on to 'all pictures' the same photo is in the middle column, sixth photo down from the top. (I recognise that the photo order might change though!). In our room was a good sized TV, a fridge, good air conditioning, and a strong WiFi signal. The only thing our room didn't have - and it would be great if the Best Western could arrange this sometime in the future - was an in-room safe. That said, there are safety deposit boxes at the front reception available 24 hours per day and the Reception staff were always happy to allow you to access the safety boxes at any time. While I am on the subject of the front Reception staff. Very polite, friendly, professional, and nothing was too much trouble. When we checked in I told the staff that I had been here before, albeit four years ago, and later in the day the staff left a nice 'welcome back' note and some sweets in the room for us. This was a nice gesture and much appreciated. The friendliness of the staff was a major part of our lovely stay here. As other TripAdvisor members have pointed out, the bathrooms are very small. Even though we had a large trio room, the bathroom was still quite small. I suspect that this is the standard size bathrooms in all the rooms (it was the same size that I had when I stayed in a smaller room previously). The hotel will confirm if this is correct or not. That said, the bathroom was fine for us and the shower cubicle was of a reasonable size. I would describe us three as being average sized people so, as I say, all fine for us. The small bathroom certainly did not take anything away from our enjoyable stay at the Best Western as it was clean, functional, and did the job. In the main, we were in Melbourne to attend the Australian Open tennis tournament and the location of the Best Western is perfect for this, as the tram stop that takes you to Melbourne park is only a matter of a couple of minutes walk away. The next time we are in Melbourne - hopefully in January 2021 - we will back at the Best Western for sure as we just love this hotel.
My stay at the Best Western Hotel in Melbourne has been a good experience. I enjoyed the hotel ammenities, the breakfast, internet and a very cozy and comfortable room. It is clean becuase of the daily room service.
My stay was made perfect by the can-do attitude of the gentleman on the night shift. I got to see the rooms, I was given a good explanation of the rooms and nothing seemed to be a problem. The location virtually opposite Southern Cross and another railway station as well as near the casino and bars made it ideal.
We were booked into this hotel as a prestay before a cruise to New Zealand and it was fantastic. The location was perfect... A short walk from the Skybus stop from the airport, right next to the city circle and other stops on the free trams and also two minutes from the tram stop to get to the cruise ship port. It is so easy to get anywhere from here... Southern Cross railway station is five minutes away, and the South Bank is just across the bridge. It makes a great base for exploring. The staff were all so friendly and helpful.... Special mention to Joanne! They coped with about 50 guests arriving from the airport at the same time really well! Our room was lovely and comfortable.... Hot water, comfortable bed, quite spacious, kettle and wifi... We even had a small suntrap private courtyard to sit in. Thanks to everyone there. Not the height of luxury, but perfectly great for a city stay.... Highly recommended! Peter and Vijay
Being band in the middle of the CBD and a 2 minute walk from the Southern Cross Station is the biggest USP for this wonderful place. I found the rooms to be a bit small based on the price charged but travelling in the Australian Open season period one would expect that. The food option available is Olivier's Cafe in the Hotel premises but once you head out there are endless options. The Southwharf DFO and Crown Casino are 10 mins. walk from the hotel so every night you can head out and enjoy. Overall an excellent stay if you can afford it.
Lovely little hotel within 5 min walking distance to Casino, Southbank, South Wharf, and very handy transport. Downstairs coffee shop is lovely and serves a yummy breakfast. Bathrooms are small, but everything else makes up for it.
Room size quite adequate and fairly clean Bathroom the tiniest I have ever encountered and quite uncomfortable. Wash basin so tiny as to be useless Shower was a contortion to enter and exit Breskfast was waste of money. Oliver's is dingy and grubby. Staff clueless Next to no choice of food very limited seating. There are much better places I feel sure
Efficient and friendly staff, excellent location (the Skybus basically took us right there from the airport, and everything we needed was a walk or tram away!), breakfast was great, and the room was great value.
Friendliest, most accommodating hotel ever. Tiny rooms, but I don't spend much time there so it doesn't matter. Wouldn't stay with a couple in the same room for longer than two nights though, you'd murder each other. The staff are AMAZING! SUPERB staff, and the rooms are sparkling, brilliantly clean. The location is second to none - the walks are beautiful up and down the Yarra, there's more food places within 500m than you can poke a stick at, it's a short easy walk to everywhere (DFO, Convention Centre, Crown, Cinemas, Seaworld, city) AND - they allow pets! Best thing ever - on a business trip, and there's dogs! Just perfect.
This hotel was in the perfect location for us to stay for a few nights in Melbourne - close to public transport and with access to a private car park for a reasonable daily price. We stayed in a courtyard room which was very small, but well decorated. The courtyard was also small, but had a nice table and two chairs to be able to sit with a cuppa. There were two trees in the courtyard too which provided shade and ambiance. The bathroom was also very small with no storage for toiletries (only had one small, narrow shelf), but it was modern. Despite being very small, we were very happy staying here as we found it good value for money in Melbourne city and would stay again.
The hotel is easily located and in an excellent location to explore Melbourne, either by foot, tram or train. Walking distance to The Crown, Exhibition Centre and Shopping Outlet, DFO. Disappointingly my room lacked lustre in comparison to the reception and public areas of the hotel and certainly would benefit from a fresh coat of paint. The 3 large windows offering lots of natural light in my shoebox room were filthy inside and out and overlooked by the hostel next door so some blinds or net curtains for added privacy and aesthetics would have been nice. The bathroom was small yet functional with a reasonable shower and the double bed was comfortable with a choice of pillows, though a little short for my long limbs. The room was cleaned daily and benefitted from air con (albeit noisy) a mini fridge, tea, coffee, iron & mini board. If on a budget and looking a room to just sleep and dress then you cannot go wrong with a Shoebox Double Room.
We stayed here two years ago and returned this time for its convenience for what we wanted to do - see sights, eat well at a restaurant, meet up with our grandson, and visit the State Library and the Immigration Museum.
We chose this hotel for it's access to public transport. We were in Melbourne for the Australian Open and a basketball game. The room was clean with daily service. The front desk staff were smiling, welcoming and helpful. I would like to let travelers know about a small thing which may affect their stay in the room we chose (Trio Room). It had three beds, a desk and compact bathroom. The shower door was the width of the facewasher plus 2 cms. Difficult for me to access and I couldn't bend over to wash my feet. The bathroom sink was very small but the front desk willingly filled my water bottles. The door to the bathroom was opaque and while not see through, definitely showed outline. I'm just saying that some people may find this unpleasant. The person in the single bed opposite the bathroom was not happy with the show. The desk could be a little narrower so the chair could be used more easily. Beds on easy glide wheels meant they could be pushed to the side to use the chair. But then I realise the desk can't be narrower as the fridge is under it! Perhaps the fridge could be put in the cupboard where the tea tray is?
We really enjoyed great service & friendly help there. Walk to tennis center for AO 2020...tram/ walk to roof top bars, restaurants, Yarre river walk, beautiful gardens etc. Also liked Oliver's cafe in lobby for coffee & breakfast.
I had medical appointments at East Melbourne, and Best Western online appealed, particularly as regards its proximity to the 109 tram route to Victoria Parade. It is an area I'm familiar with because of its nearness to Southern Cross station, and the 109 offers easy options in both directions.
I recently treated my self to a night in the city. Man did I pick an awesome place to stay. From my check in to my check out I 101% couldn't fault anything at all. Staff 10/10 Room Quality - Presentation - Facilities 10/10 Restful night sleep 10/10 Property 10/10 Clean / Tidy and Welcoming. I had a Courtyard room if you contemplating a stay go for that its certainly worth the little extra charge but be like me treat your self.
Room was quite small but adequate for one person in need of an overnight stay only. The reception was ready for my arrival at 11.45pm so was pleased to be greeted warmly. Great location close to the major railway and only a tram ride to beach or city.
We stayed in the smaller room but we traveled with hand luggage only. Wouldn't recommend for anyone with checked luggage. However, for our needs it was perfect. Loved the room, the hotel, the staff and where it is located close to Southern Cross Station. I found the whole experience exceeded my expectations. Will always stay here in future.
Though next to both tram and train lines, the disturbance was almost zero. It was clean and comfortable. The shower and toilet were very, very small. Much more so than hotels of a lower star rating. And the lifts were certainly on the slow side. (Not a major problem as the hotel isn't high rise). More positively, though the Best Western itself didn't offer breakfast, Olivier's coffee shop – part of the same building – had a very decent choice.
My partner and I went before Christmas 2019 to Melbourne and stayed at Best Western. And the staff were amazing and it was nice hotel peaceful but in a great spot in the centre of the CBD. Its close to the tram stops and Southern Cross station and all the food shops.
This hotel is located just outside the main CBD but convinently located to get around the city both on foot or by public transport. Resonably price its definatly on my list to return to in the future.
It is a short stay in Melbourne. Hotel locates really close to the train station. There are lots of restaurant nearby. Room is not big, but is clean. Bed is comfortable and staff is nice. It is good for short stay in the city.
Location near Southern cross station and very handy to trams. Staff friendly. Early baggage drop off. Room was tiny (Matchbox) but suited my one night stay. No windows. However the Skylight directly over bed needs a covering so you can control the early morning sunlight.
Best western in Spencer St Melbourne was close to transport. Casino Shops only a tram ride away from hospital for speacilist appointments. Staff are amazing very helpful. And the little cafe downstairs serves great fresh breaskfats. Easy place to stay.
Stayed in a trio room, comfortable space for myself and two teenagers. Bathroom very small, would recommend checking when booking as anyone larger than average would have trouble getting into the shower.
Clean, central location, and great staff, however, room is terrible: tiny double bed (140x180), tiny toilet/bathroom with almost no separation from bedroom (you can hear and see everything that happens here ;-) ), and window looking directly to other rooms a couple of meters away through small "courtyard" (i.e. you can't open your curtains unless you're close to your neighbors or want to be). Wouldn't come again, at least not to this room.
We just checked in at the hotel and shocked about the size of the room and bathroom. Clearly not a place for couples or people with claustrophobia. You can hardly move in the shower. Clearly a place for singles or business people. Not up to the normal standards of Best Western. Staff very friendly and willing to assist but can't resolve the problem and only offer 50% cancellation ? Pictures on website is clearly done in such a way to make it look bigger and better. Won't choose this again !
Daytime front desk staff was efficient but short with regards to customer service. Overnight staff always seemed friendly and looking to help. Glasses/mugs in the room we're not hygienically cleaned/ replaced. Lack of consistent water pressure & consistent temperature in the shower and in the bathroom tap helped to make the stay uncomfortable. Carpets were musty and did not get vacuumed daily. Bathroom appears to have been constructed for somebody 5' high weighing 100 lbs. Disappointing, really.
The hotel is nice and what I love most is it's near and walking distance to the city. You can easily get things you need and it's near restaurants and mini market. The only thing that's missing is the one and only restaurant they have only serve breakfast and brunch.
I like this hotel. It's budget but with more character than most and my experience with reception staff was great (and better than most more expensive hotels). As one of their room categories is "shoebox" there is no ambiguity about what size of room you are getting if you choose that one (and as such I didn't actually mind that I lterally had to squeee through the shower door to take a shower)! Close to where the Airport bus arrives at Southern Cross, and decent wifi and laundary facilities, I'd definitely recommend it for a single person on a business trip who wants to keep thier accommodation costs down
Value is unbeatable. For business traveller who just needs a clean room and comfy bed. Only downside was a little bit of noise from nearby trains. Rooms are small but with names like shoebox and matchbox are exactly what you expect.
I arrived very early in the morning and it was expected that my booked room wasn't ready. I offered to pay a little extra to upgrade myself so that I didn't have to wait that long as I was very tired. Thanks to the staff, my request was entertained immediately. Initially I had problems logging onto the hotel Wi-Fi but a member of the hotel staff came to my rescue. He took pains and went out of his way help resolving my problems. He should be commended. With regards to the location of the hotel, it can't be more ideal. It was only a few minutes' walk from the Southern Cross Station and the South Bank. Overall, I have an extremely satisfied stay in this hotel. Perhaps my only criticism is the size of the room!
I stayed here for a conference at the Crown Conference Center. I was able to tack on a day before and after the current booking to extend my stay through email. It was fairly easy to do even after a few date errors. I checked in very early and my room wasn't ready (understandably) so I dropped off my bags and went on a tour. It was handy that they are open late as I didn't get back until 0100 without a room key. I did have to wait a while (about 30 min) though as the doors were closed and there was no one manning the desk. It was easy to get the key and my bags were already waiting for me in my room. The room was a lot smaller than I expected. Small desk by the window (which looked into the rooms across the small garden) and a small toilet and shower, which might've been smaller than ones in Tokyo. I was fortunate to have a double room to myself so I did have enough room for my luggage and didn't have to clamber over anything. I did find the bed a bit short. The rooms were clean. I found the TV to be on a bad angle but I didn't use it much. There was daily housekeeping for towels and beds. They supplied shampoo, body wash, and soap as well. They also had tea and coffee but not hot chocolate. I found the staff quite helpful and friendly. It has a really good location, 5 minutes from Southern Cross station where I got the Skybus to/from the airport. It was a bit far to the other places in the city but it was just a free tram ride away, from a stop a few minutes down the road. It was about a 10-minute walk to the Casino across the Yarra River. The rooms are quite small so that is something to be aware of. There also wasn't much to look out from the windows. It has a really good location and I thought it was quite clean.
I attend the annual AusBiotech Partnering event in Melbourne every year and every year I stay at the Best Western (previously the Pensione). I love the uniqueness and personal touch, the ambience, the location, the reliable internet, the friendly staff. It is a 100% experience each and every year.
The very young inexperienced and uninterested checkin boys did not even know of the program, no recognition whatsoever. I guess this attitude comes from the management, guests are guests, we are not here for the benefit of the hotel. They also need to teach those young, low-paid inexperienced young boys that when a guest, repeat, a guest, approach reception for check-in, take themselves away from the computer for a few seconds, I know it's tough to look a guest in the eye, especially that age group, but they are in hospitality and need strong western style management to remind them they are there for the benefit of the guests, not for the money-hungry management The rooms are crazy, crazy small. The beds are not as advertised. The rom I stayed in is not a double, even though it was advertised that way. I felt like a prisoner for 3 days. It was awful and smacked of extracting every cent they can from the guests to the detriment of the stay of the guests. It is all about them and their money grabbing and not the guests. The place is soul-less and characterless. The inexperienced, very young staff have no management or hospitality skills whatsoever. But I don't blame them personally, it will be the error of management who hire for the cheapest price they can, rather than for their experience. It reminds me of places I have stayed in the sub-continent. Nothing. Nada. Zilch. All as dull as dishwater. Not a smile to be seen. very unhappy staff who are clearly mis-managed. I have boutique hotels in Costa Rica, Sri Lanka and Mozambique and I would't hire one of them. Or if I did, I would train them in hospitality and invest in their futures. But this management clearly don't do this. It reminded me of places I have stayed in the sub-continent where every thing is done on the cheap.
I always return to the Best Western Melbourne City because it is all I need in a city hotel - clean, comfortable and soooo convenient! Free city tram across the road, museums around the corner and just a walk to the airport bus.
Excellant location with good value for money and service. Just if you stay in a shoebox room be aware there is little sound insulation between the ensuite and bedroom. That said I would stay there again.
Excellent customer service, charming hotel, great value for money. The room was adequate for my family, bathroom a little cramped but manageable but the amazing staff made up for any slight inconvenience - this is a great location, the hotel is charming in character, the coffee shop downstairs had absolutely delicious breakfast options - happy to recommend this hotel, and we will definitely be back.
This is an amazing place to stay for a great price if you have an event at the Melbourne Convention Centre. The noise from the city doesn't reach the rooms (this is important for someone from the country where city noise is gross) and it's the perfect place to start with City exploration!
Decent price for a hotel in the heart of Melbourne. Almost everything the city has to offer is within walking distance. And if not, there's a tram stop on the doorstep and a train station 2 minutes away. Bed was comfy. Room was clean. The only thing I would point out, is the room size. They lean on the smaller side. But this means nothing to me, I only plan to be there to sleep!
Located not to far from the main city area and crown casino. Great value for money. Staff were pleasant and helpful. Room was small and cozy. Building construction going on during the day but stopped before the evening. Definitely will stay again for next visit.
Good service. Bathroom was a bit old and small but the room was not expensive and suited our families needs, overall a great stay. Stored our luggage after we checked out so we could enjoy a day in the city. I would stay there again.
Room was incomplete with alot of minor\\ moderate fixtures needing to be done, bathroom was tidy but the shower head was tlowing sideways instead of out in front for some reason which meant trying to shower was near impossible, price was rediculously high for such a tiny room with little to provide but at least they have free internet right? website was set to usd instead of aud as well when booking online and didnt give any notice of it until i had booked and recieved an reciept. Great area of the city, public transport is right out of the door and your'e close to multiple places (ie, supermarkets, dine in takeaways etc).
The shoebox room was a nice room, comfortable bed, working lamps and digital clock next to the bed. Love the fact the heater worked in the room aswell. Would be nice if they cleaned the cups and spoons. Wifi worked lovely too. Unfortunately no microwave. No views from the bedroom window and the rooftop isn't anything exciting personally. Staff were friendly, and happy to help me and my daughter with information about trams to catch. Overall I was happy with the accommodation. Oh and being so close to southern cross station and the aquarium, around the corner from the tram stop, and 2 doors up from a seven eleven was amazing!
Great little Hotel within my price range. I always stay here overnight when I have to catch a transfer bus to Airport.Great location to Station and also trams to Business District etc for restaurants and shopping
Everything about this hotel is excellent, especially the staff and the breakfast cafe, but the designers forgot that travellers use suitcases. There's nowhere to put an open suitcase except on the super-large bed. Even closed, leaving it in the entrance way is maybe the only option. Also, I live in a very quiet suburb so could hear the subtle rumbles of the tram outside the door and the many train lines across the next street around the corner. I needed to sleep with noise-cancelling headphones on every night.
Very clean accomodation. Excellent, friendly staff with very quick check in and out. Rooms are basic and ensuite small but clean and functional. Comfortable bed. Includes essentials like fridge, kettle, cups, tea, coffee, etc.
I stayed overnight to attend a conference and booked a matchbox room. It was tiny and covered all the things i needed for my stay. Clean, comfortable and warm, with tea and coffee and toiletries. I had a lovely evening relaxing. Recommend for anyone who needs somewhere to stay in easy access to Southern Cross Station. Staff were lovely.
My experience here was brilliant. From being able to check in early to being able to check out late. Everyone was professional and friendly. The room was exactly as described, small but cosy. The rooftop area was a nice surprise and a wonderful way to take in my morning coffee. The staff went above and beyond. I will be back.
Polite staff and helpful ,room on lower floor small but suitable for my stay, needed a reburbish , no booklet on information in the room ,bed very comfortable ,great cafe in foyer, would stay there again for a short stay
Great value for money , very clean & comfortable & in an exclellent location for early departure. A short walk to Southern Cross station. We arrived early & had an event to be atby 2pm. The staff were very helpful in getting us in our rooms early enough to meet our timeline.
Close to everything. Trams, Trains, Shopping and Food. Staff were welcoming checking in. Not so much checking out. One of the managers (If you call him that) made me feel like a criminal. Didnt ask how my stay was, Didnt smile. Nothing. Went to check my room before I was able to get my deposit back then gave the receptionist the nod of approval. Jeez. That didnt worry me too much its how he went about it like an uptight bouncer who hated his job or needed a drink or a slap or all of the above. Other than that. Stay was good. Room was clean.
Great budget hotel, very nicely decorated and close to trains and tram. Would definitely stay here again. Loved our upgrade to a king bed. Staff were friendly and helpful when asked for directions. Would be back there in November but they are booked out!
Bargain price. I stayed in a matchbox single which was perfect for 3 nights. My only frustration was that they have "save water" signs in the bathroom encouraging us to not get fresh towels each day. The first morning I left out my do not disturb sign and the second I wrote a note to housekeeping asking for more teabags but specifying that I do not need fresh towels (also I left them hung up, not on the floor). I was still given fresh towels. Bit annoying. Other than that, great stay. Ask for a room at the end of a corridor if you don't want people stomping past your door all night, or just take ear plugs. Walls are thin. I could hear someone blow drying their hair in a nearby room.
Worst experience to date. Discarded Sex toys , water system & neighbour noise all night long. Checked in to a court yard room after viewing Trivago room pictures. Checked in to find court yard 1/4 of size advertised. Couldn't swing a loaf of bread. Moved a chair to find discarded used sex products, condoms and sexual lube. Going to sleep a real challenge as no extra blankets and loud noise from constant use of water system (Showers toilets ) all rooms connected to ground floor apartments. No noise / sound proofing , loud sqealling sound. Adjoining rooms you could hear every sound, snoring, toilets etc. NO privacy or ability to sleep depending on your neighbour. All in all one of the worst nights I have had. Checked out 0600 a.m and didn't waist any time advising night clerk as I had no sleep and he didn't look thta interested nor did I wish to waist any more of my time.
This was better quality than I was expecting. I was booked for business near to the convention centre and based on price. They've done well to update the old building and the rooms were very good. Definitely recommend.
Simple but very affordable way to stay in the city. The room was clean, everything worked as they should. I've stayed a few times at this hotel before and it continues to provide me with the expected level of service for the price......quality at an affordable price. Well done.
The staff here are brilliant. Rooms are small, but have everything you need. The hotel is perfectly placed for the Convention Centre and cinemas, not so much for the centre of Melbourne. It's a small but mighty hotel!
The location of the hotel was absolutely fantastic. The room itself was well furnished and the bed was comfortable and it was clean but you could barley walk around the bed as the room was so small. The shower in the bathroom, well the opening was less than 30cm wide, which is not really good enough, a large person wouldn't be able to use the shower. There was also a nightclub next door, which was noisy.
Lovely room, great staff especially on reception. So central. Tram outside, bus routes, train station up the road. Nice shower, good size room. Downstairs opportunity to get good coffee and breakfast.
Stayed in the Best Western Melbourne for 5 Nights. The hotel is situated near the Crown Casino where you can find many food outlets. There is also a 7/11 Supermarket right next door to the hotel which is handy. We went there for fresh Krispie Kreme donuts in the morning. The hotel has a little cafe in reception which opened in the morning for breakfast but closes about midday. The hotel itself has no parking. Instead we had to park in a multi-storey car park next door at a cost of $35 dollars per night which you must arrange with hotel on arrival. The room was small but clean and comfortable. Fine for a no frills stay in Melbourne.
friendly clean close to all transport found all amenites clean close to local attractions easy access breakfast was fantastic staff helped in any way they could smiling beds where warm and comfortably
THE CONS The most important thing in a hotel room is your ability to sleep in it, and this room was noisy. I stayed on a Friday night and therefore there was a club downstairs operating late at night. The bass was clearly audible after midnight and frustrating. The bathroom was tiny compared to the room and basically the size of a toilet cubicle plus a shower. There was also a problem with my key and a bad smell downstairs in the foyer area near the men's toilets. THE PROS It is a stone's throw from Southern Cross station and around the corner from trams. I was upgraded to a King room from a single for which I was grateful. The bed was really comfortable and the room was clean and big. It was at least nice and dark in the morning. The room had all the necessary amenities including tea, coffee, milk, iron, ironing board, hair dryer and basic television. For just $110 I also received a continental breakfast downstairs at Olivier's Cafe. All staff members were very kind and helpful.
This hotel was in great proximity to Southern Cross Station. The staff were very friendly and helpful. I was upgraded to a king room but the dissapointing part was the bathroom was smaller than some those you find in caravans/cabins. Otherwise the room was well presented and of a decent size. I was unable to hear the noise from the street below but the fact you could clearly hear conversation of guest beside, below and above you.. I suppose i was slightly dissappointed as i have paid less for a best wesstern room per night and had much more comfortable room. THe next morning i was treated with a veiw of a steam train leaving Southern Station.
Arrived extremely late after a delayed flight (Jetstar from Townesville 3.00am) . This hotel is only 350m from the skybus and the 24 hr concierge was welcome as the check in was quick and easy. Described as a shoebox but turned out to be more spacious than expected.
Good value, clean rooms, motel is close to Southern cross station and the CBD. 24 hour check in. Love the air bus from the airport that goes directly and only to the airport or directly to Southern Cross station from the airport.
I had a late flight in before an early train ride the next morning. Found this property online and booked due to location near Southern Cross Station and the value pricing. 24 hour check in was staffed and ready for my late arrival. The room I was given was ground floor but well back from the street. Very quiet and a comfortable queen bed. Small but renovated ensuite was very nice. Easy checkout in the morning. I was only on the property for about 6 hours but it was excactly what I was looking for this trip. I would stay again for a similar trip but would look elsewhere for an extended stay
Only stayed for one night to attend an event at the convention centre. Easy walking distance from Skybus at Southern Cross and then to the convention centre. Room was larger than I expected with adequate storage. Bathroom (as stated on the website) is small but functional. The shower door is half-width so is a bit of a squeeze to get in and probably wont suit larger girths, but for such a small space it is quite functional, with more shelving and hooks than I've seen in other larger and more expensive rooms. Bed was comfy, and room was quiet. Check-in staff were great, as were the cafe staff. Cant fault it for the price.
Well it was at the very top Apartment Everything was Fine Just NO INTERNET AT ALL in the room & the staff could do nothing about it but Move us if the was a room free , but there wasn't , not that I wanted to be moved I just wanted Internet... get a service man in to fix it put an extender on the router ... run a cat 6 cable ,but get Internet to the room .The shelf in the bathroom needs to amended or Higher as you cant get your face in to brush teeth / wash face etc.. Good note the Bed & Pillows were awesome ,shower awesome .
I have just stayed here for one night. It was my first time in Melbourne and and I really only needed somewhere to sleep . I booked a shoe box room which was clean and comfortable with everything I needed for a short stay . The staff were courteous and helpful especially Oriana who even remembered my reason for being in Melbourne when I checked out . Yes , the room was small but adequate for what I needed.. close to Southern Cross station and a handy 711 a few doors down . Wouldn't hesitate to stay there again.
this hotel is great value and close to everything 2 min walk to the crown casino, great room service breakfast and the courtyard rooms are great no need to use the lifts! southern cross station across the road.
Only a few minutes walk from southern cross station, crown casino and major tram stops. It was perfect for what we needed during our stay. Staff were pleasant and very helpful with maps and directions.
It was close to the train station and the city. Walking distance to wherever u wanted to go. The staff was friendly. And helpful. The room was tidy and clean. I stay again. Probably need a bar at the hotel
The room was not what I was expecting .... so much smaller than implied (by photos) when booking it. The shower door was so small a person had to turn sideways to enter the shower. The toilet and shower room was extremely small with the added humiliation of an opaque glass door that you could see through from the bedroom. (a bit embarrassing I believe). The heating of the building was running at a tropical temperature (in the middle of winter) and our in room air conditioner had to be turned on to cool down the room ...... it was ridiculous.
We stayed at this hotel for a Convention across the river at MCEC and it was perfect. The updates so far are great after being changed over from the Pensione, and it can only get better. Staff were lovely, the courtyard room is definitely worth the little extra if for nothing else, just to be able to enjoy the greenery when you wake up or relax during the day. Best sleep in a hotel in long while! Very clean rooms and attentive front of house and house keeping staff. Space can be a little tight in the room if you have a lot of luggage, but it didn't bother us as we just stood our suitcases up when we were out and about. Plenty of hanging space in the wardrobe which was nice. We had a room outside the elevator doors and didn't here anything from other guests. The free tram that takes you to docklands and Victoria markets etc is just around the corner from the hotel. For anyone on a budget, can highly recommend the 5 min walk to southern cross station and finding the cafe in the centrecourt. They do $5 savory breakfast muffins and $3.50 sweet muffins. The also have some yummy soups all day, perfect for the cold! Overall we had an enjoyable stay, and my mum was happy she could get some washing done as well. We'll be coming back again next time we're in Melbourne!
We booked Best Western so we had a short trip to the airport for an early morning flight. Check in was quick and the desk staff were professional and courteous. The lobby area was quirky and cheerful. The room was large and well appointed. Bathroom on the small side but spotless and everything we needed. The amenities were lovely. The bed was extremely comfortable and pillows were great. I had a very good sleep and would not have known I was in the city. We checked out at 5am. The lad on the desk at checkout was lovely and for that time of the morning, very cheerful. We were only there to sleep so didn't get to have breakfast or use any other facilities. Value for money is an understatement. I couldn't have been happier with the price we paid. I would definitely stay here again and will recommend to others. Excellent stay.
Single female traveller attending convention centre. Wanted something within walking distance to convention centre and train station. Ticked all the boxes. Would stay here again. Clean fresh rooms, comfy bed, iron and hairdryer. Made the trip easy. Luggage storage a bonus as I didn't want to take by bags to the conference on the last day. Booked the basic shoebox room but staff upgraded me on check-in. Win!
Always made feel welcome and the rooms are always well serviced. The rooms are an ambient temperature on arrival, the beds comfortable and clean. The location is ideally suited to our needs and Southern Cross Station is only a few minutes walk away. Restaurants and cafes nearby. We have no reason to stay anywhere else when we visit Melbourne.
the room and decor felt cheap the staff were happy and enjoyed greeting us at every available opportunity. i would return for a quick 1 night stay as the price point was good. location was key for us.
Me and my partner used this hotel as a base for when we moved to Melbourne. Everyone was extremely accommodating, helpful with tips, information about the local areas. The hotel was always spotless and the breakfast was delicious and a good portion size. I'm surprised I didn't pay more for my stay! Thank you everyone at Best Western.
I was offered an early check in which was unexpected but welcomed. Also the welcome back note in my room with accompanying chocolates was special. Already I felt that someone cared. That feeling carried throughout my stay. My room was clean and comfortable and the location was perfect for me. It would be hard to beat the rate, quality and service of this hotel. I will definitely be back.
I booked my accommodation very last minute as some plans had changed when travelling to the ANZAC Day footy game. Upon arrival, we were not disappointed. The hotel was clean and staff very friendly, we were able to check in early, which was a bonus. While the room was small (we booked a twin share room), it had everything we required for our quick overnight stay. Our only 'complaint' was that the frosting on the bathroom door, while it looked great and modern, did not provide much privacy one the bathroom light was turned on. While this is fine for couples, I was travelling with a male friend and didn't provide much privacy. While we could overlook the small issue, I am unsure if other could. Other than that, it was a great place to stay, with lots of little nooks to sit with friends and have a chat. Being close to the Spencer ST Train station was a massive bonis for my early flight home the next day.
To tiny Little match box Got anxiety sleeping there Bed size of a 4 yrs old child No window Couldn't fit in the bathroom That's how small it was Couldn't open the door coz it would hit the bed Costraphobic
I booked this hotel at last minute.com and got a great rate. Staff check in was friendly quick and easy. Room was ok for 1 night . No soap in shower so cleaning people must have forgotten but I just went down and got one. No problem. Windows rattled a bit at night so I struck a magazine in the window .all good. Shower was great pressure and clean bathroom . Comfy bed for a few hours sleep as I was up early to catch the skybus. Good location to the railway station . Plus to the river . Great eating places as well .
Great value. clean room in middle of city close to everything...good mattresses and double glazed..freiendly staff and good service at the restaurant...I liked th nearby taxi stand and the rooftop area
This was my second stay at this hotel and both times I was very happy with the service. Great location, and excellent access to transport. Staff at reception were extremely helpful and were able to check me in early.
Stayed 2 nights prior to a Great Ocean Road (Road) Trip. Late check-in following our flight from the UK was fine, friendly and seamless. We booked what was described as a 'shoe-box' room which actually did live up to its name. Very small but functional and reasonable for the price paid. Good location for walking around Melbourne CBD. Also very handy for Spencer Street station and the shuttle bus to the airport. Would highly recommend the cafe joined onto the hotel for breakfast! All in all a good stay at a nice 'no frills' hotel
Arrived later in the evening on a Thursday. First they didn't have the reservation then found it under my partners name that was listed as a secondary contact name listed on the reservation. Got to the room and it wasn't the room we had booked, called reception and told them to then be informed they would call us back in 10-15 minutes. Waited 30 minutes and called them back. They then told us that they would have to make another room up to which we replied we will leave them to it and sort it once we got back from getting dinner. Returned to be given a new room key (that we would only have for one night as it was booked for our other nights and we would have to move) and that we would have to get our bags from the other room first, got into the new (tiny) room that barely fit the bed let alone us or our bags. We then discovered that the bed was in fact broken, called reception again and they told us that we would have to deal with it for tonight. Effectively we slept on a single bed together to save my partner rolling out of bed and hitting his head. The next morning we went down requesting a refund and that we were going to find another hotel. The front desk staff said that they had a room ready now and would we like to see it, we obliged and were taken to a much bigger room with the king bed we originally requested. We accepted the room and also the refund of one nights accommodation. The room we completed our stay in was much better than the first two we were given except for the tiny shower in the tiny bathroom, we could barely fit through the door. Finally, the 'included breakfast' consists of toast, a couple of cereals and some juice .... completely not worth the extra money!
The staff were lovely and welcoming. The room was clean, simple and decorated nicely. Also it was naturally lit with a huge overhead sylight and high ceilings making it light and spacious. Conveniently located 2 min walk form southern cross station with easy access to the building.
Love this hotel. Close to Casino and free public transport which will take you into the centre of the city. A short walk to a major train station (Southern Cross Station) and Marvel Stadium for AFL football.
My wife was bitten by bed bugs on the first couple of nights of our stay. Upon telling the manager, Buwan, who at first seemed to be sympathetic, we were moved to a new room, as one would expect. Initially, the bites were itchy, but after a few days, they became seriously inflamed and painful, such that my wife couldn't sleep. This is apparently a common occurrence with bed bug bites (inflammation can occur days or even weeks after the bites are incurred), which we had no prior experience of. Upon telling Buwan this, he became defensive, and told me I couldn't be sure it was bed bugs. He told me I needed to have a doctor determine the bites were bed bug bites before he would acknowledge this and before he would offer any additional help. He told me, perhaps my wife had a rash from environmental causes in Melbourne. He inferred that it would be a problem for the hotel if he was seen to acknowledge that there were bed bugs. I was completely surprised at his reaction and couldn't believe what I was hearing. I was expecting sympathy for my wife's worsened condition and for her lost sleep. We wanted acknowledgment of our suffering that was a result of staying in the hotel. I wasn't expecting a court of law. I might also add that Buwan discussed our situation with his immediate boss, following which we received no further help, but only more questions, which strangely came from a junior staff member. The message we received was that the management was more concerned with the reputation of the hotel than the suffering and comfort of its guests. This is a clueless attitude to have in the service industry. While the general staff are fine, stay here at your own risk with regard to the management.
I stayed here for two nights for work, as I was attending a conference at the nearby Melbourne Convention Centre. They had upgraded me to a room that slept three people, so I'm guessing it was slightly bigger than the norm. I'm not sure how three people could stay in here though, as the bathroom was tiny! The bed however, was extremely comfortable and I had a good night's sleep. The overall decor was nice and staff were accommodating and friendly. I kindly asked if my partner could stay over (we are long distance and he lives in Melbourne) and they were 100% fine with it. There was only a fridge, no proper kitchenette, so I wouldn't stay in this particular room longer term however for a night or two it's fine. Great value for money.
I really liked pretty much everything about this hotel - it was friendly and the rooms were compact but really good value and it was so close to the train/bus station. I was worried about noise, as it is so close to everything but I found it quite quiet. But unfortunately there was one draw back: the bed was very uncomfortable. It was a double room but the bed was one of those beds that could be pushed together as a double or split apart and it hurt my back. I ended up placing the bedding on the floor and sleeping down there. It still didn't ruin my stay though :-)
Called Hotel 3 times to enquire about Best Western discounts for Government and defence staff, but was advised they didn't know nor would seek advice. Requested call backs and submitted online enquires all with no reply. One staff member said,"well I don't know , so are you going to book a room or not." Hotel at night next to a hostel and bar. Large groups of roudy groups smoking and drunk at front entrance ot hotel. Only hotel that charge you $100 on your credit card as apposed to a credit card charge pending. 4 days to get refunded and to add insult to injury they charged a further $4.50 for making deduction which was not disclosed at anytime. Never again.
The hotel is practically new and the rooms are very pretty. The bed was incredibly comfortable and the staff was very helpful and kind. I really enjoyed my stay here and would definitely come back. The location is perfect since it's quite close to Southern Cross and right in at the heart of Melbourne.
I stayed only for a few hours during my arrival at night. I could compare it with other Best Western that I've stayed at around the world. It's not bad but it does not add something special to a staying experience. The room was clean but at 1st floor and dark, the bath was small, while it did not have minibar or even access to ice. At my question for water and ice I was advised for a "seven eleven store next block". Check out is at 11:00 without a notice. The area is close downtown but not that good. I wouldn't stay again.
Nice location, supportive staff, Clean, Near to station, All facilities nearby CBD. The hotel has taken high price due to some conference. Else it is good location and staff is also very co-operative.
This hotel was in a great location and great value for money, particularly if you want quick access to Southern Cross Station, Marvel Stadium or the DFOs for shopping. It was clean and had great beds and fast , free WiFi.
Location was good, near Spencer Street free tram. Also free tram up to Southern Cross Station if you are coming/going to airports by sky bus. However rooms are very small. I booked twin room for my father and I. First room was rm 121. VERY small. Couldn't put down two suitcases on floor to open. Bathroom is sliding door with no lock. There is a gap so you can see outside from within. Inside bathroom is so small with very little room to move about. Small sink so water splashes on the floor. Shower stall is a glass door that open out and squishes you between toilet and door. Changed to room 206 after a day with AUD10 paid extra per night. The Metro runs right outside the window so if you are a light sleeper, it will disturb you. Room 206 was bigger but bathroom was just as tiny! At least the door closed properly with no gap.but no lock. Oh and the door is opaque glass so you can see the shadow of the person inside if the light is on in the bathroom! No privacy! Bed was lumpy so I woke up with a back ache. I don't know why they put a separate mattress on top of the original mattress.
On the plus side, this hotel is well located and our corner room had two windows which opened. On the downside, the rooms are very compact and the bathroom is so small, it's really only suitable for very tiny people! The shower door space is so small that if your girth is somewhat larger than average, you would not be able to fit. So beware!
This hotel is clean and conveniently located great for pets staff was friendly and were helpful would definitely stay again. Great food in the restaurant again very friendly staff. Just down the road from spencer st train station
We stayed at this hotel on a recent visit to Australia. The location of the hotel is brilliant, close to Southern Cross station and the tram city loop. The rooms are quite small as is the bathroom but sufficient if you are out all day. The staff are great, really helpful and pleasant. Prices are reasonable.
Location is perfect and the price is competitive. Having said that, certain things need improvement which should not affect their price point. Both my pillows were lumpy so sleep was not great. Room was clean but the floor squeaks a lot! Bathroom is clean and functional. The ironing board was a waste of time because there was hardly any padding on it to iron clothes properly. The WORST bit was that I found hair of the curly kind in the filter of the kettle. Luckily I could remove the filter so i didn't bother complaining as complaining wouldn't have changed anything.
Central location, great staff, reasonable price, clean, tidy and quiet rooms. All boxes ticked ! I have been staying at this hotel since 2016 (then called Pensione) whenever I need to visit Melbourne and it has remained my go to place.
We stayed for 3 nights in a family room. It was the first time for my partner and grand child but I have previously stayed at the former Pensione Hotel on many occasions. Rooms are always clean, bed comfortable. Bathrooms are always small but adequate. Housekeeping staff are thorough and reception staff always helpful. Our luggage was safely stored until we left for the airport and the guest laundry is affordable and easy to use. The hotel is close to Southern Cross Station and trams including the Circle line - always handy.
Stayed at this hotel during toy fair. The room was very compact but the bathroom just plain minute. You cannot even seat properly on the toilets as the sink is in the way. To get in the shower, the door is about 50cms wide. Even going in sideways is tight.. And to top it all, the shower does not work properly. On my first day I had trouble with no cold water. I was told to open the tap and wait. Eventually cold water arrived and I was able to open the hot water and shower. Next day, tried the same but no water came. I range reception who told me that maybe too many people were showering at the same time.... In my apartment, possibly but should not happen in a hotel surely. Eventually, I was offered to go to another room 3 floors down to have a shower... It was already too late as I had to go to a meeting. Will not stay there again
Hotel in a good location. Taxi drivers find it difficult to drop off and pick up from this hotel as it is on a busy main road. City circle free Tram stops yards from the hotel and is useful for getting around. Short walk to the restaurants on Southbank. Slight drawback was the bathroom in our room. It was tiny. You could not move very little space at all. Would request a room with a larger bathroom (if they have one).
This hotel has a perfect location. Walking distance to everything we needed in Melbourne. Rooms are small, but had everything my wife and I needed. We stayed in second floor room 208. WiFi good. My wife and I are small persons, but I believe the extremely small door to the shower can irritate larger persons, who may not be able to enter the shower. The breakfast offered is just not price worthy. Eat breakfast somewhere else.
The hotel is in a great location and close to everything. Little shop next door and bottle shop not far away. Close to restaurants and the conference centre. The beds are very short and the rooms need maintenance especially new carpets. The staff were lovely. The rooms really are very tiny, which they say on the website but they also say they are luxurious which they are not. I was here for a conference and it seemed many others had better experiences for less money.
Recommended for travelers on the short stature, and slim, too. Bed was a double. Comfy, but too short for me (6'1") and partner (5'11"). Bathroom door becomes a LED light panel, doesn't help in the middle of the night. Shower doorway was narrow (14-16 in) and the shower was under a meter square, with a shower head that was partially clogged. Hot water wasn't a issue, but the lack of cold water pressure was pathetic. Plus, the showerhead was almost a foot shorter than me. Charging $4.50 a bottle, for water at room temp... not cool. Bar fridge sounded like it was on it's last legs. Rooms walls and floor(ceilings) were so thin you could HEAR what was going on.
I can't say enough nice things about this hotel - the location, the decor, the staff, the breakfast, the laundry service! I would 100% recommend to anyone in Melbourne. It's a cute hotel - yes the rooms are small BUT you're not there to see the rooms. They're modern & clean. We were travelling around Australia and this was our 2nd stop so the fact we could wash our clothes was amazing - 2 dollars for the powder and 2 dollars for the tumble dryer! the location is perfect, you're in the centre and about 5 minutes from sea life and 10-15 minutes from Southbank & the beautiful casino. Would definitely stay again. Breakfast was about 15 dollars per person.
Great last minute stay, we arrived at 1am from an overseas flight after issues at our other hotel. Staff on the front desk Dave I believe was extremely helpful in helping us out with a last minute room for the night. Great modern room was more then happy with! I'll be booking Best Western for future stays over one of your rivals a few blocks up. Cheers
The location is execellent which is near southern cross station where I need to take skybus to go airport. Besides it is near the free tram zone which is just 5 mins walk to the station. The hotel staff are friendly and always teach me what route to take to reach my destination. The only thing is the bathroom in the room is extremely small which can be quite a problem for big size guest. Overall it was a very pleasant experience staying in best western Melbourne city. Will come back again.
The location was good for sightseeing and getting to places on that side of the CBD. We stayed 3 nights and used the circle trams, etc to get to places in the other parts of town. Although the hotel is on a very noisy street with trains going by at all hours, it has incredible soundproofing + we had the AC on, so we heard none of this noise, during the day or at night. We had one of the larger rooms, and it was comfortable. We had a window on the main street but some rooms have only windows in internal well which I would not have liked. Bathroom was quite small, with the smallest sink I have ever seen! So tiny that you could not find a way to turn on the water without it spilling over onto the floor. We kept the bathmat on the floor so we didn't slip. So the room was ok in many ways... but I really wish the bathroom was a bit bigger and the sink a lot bigger.
Great location, close to shops, crown and transport. Staff were very friendly. Although the room we chose to stay in was small, it was very clean, new and functional. Decor across the entire hotel was really cool. Would stay again!
I stayed for 4 nights in a matchbox room. The room was small but the price was good & it had everything that I needed. Saturday night was noisy from people leaving bars. Otherwise, it was a great experience.
Stayed here for 3 nights at the beginning of our month long trip. Plus points - .Staff -friendly and attentive .Onsite cafe - very good breakfast. ..Location is good.Great for tram and easy to get everywhere. . Bed.big superking bed very comfy Not so good - . Lifts ..2 lifts of which one was out of order on our visit and the other was very slow and not air conditioned. . Housekeeping.maybe we were unlucky but our room was not cleaned on day 1. . Bathroom..we had room 306 and the bathroom was tiny. You could not move your arms in the shower it was that small. The entrance into the shower was tiny. The door into the bathroom was a sliding door which didnt close properly and it felt like the tiny bathroom had been added into the bedroom as it was so near to the bed. very poor... I would personally stay somewhere else a little bit further out of the city but on the tramline. You get more for your money yet just 15 mins from CBD.
My husband and I loved the location of the best western for the Australian open and the ease of getting there from the airport (as the hotel is a short 10 min walk from Southern Cross station once the Skybus drops you there). We had free trams all the way to the Aus Open with a short 50m walk from the hotel to a tram stop at the corner of Flinders and Spencer st. The hotel was great value considering we booked only 5 days in advance, during the aus open period, and got 3 nights stay for $592 for a hotel about 15 mins by tram to the Aus open and with great access to either Southern Cross or Flinders St station. We picked the 'Shoebox' room and it definitely is a shoebox size (incl toilet) but there was a very comfy double bed, tv, tea/coffee facilities, iron&board, desk, plenty of shelf and drawer space for two people to unpack some of their things. You get everything you need for a couple stay. Would def not recommend this room size for a family with even very young kids. But i'm sure the hotel has many larger rooms. The toilet has everything you need but bite sized. Access into the shower through a small 40cm-ish wide door maybe difficult for certain people but was broadly fine for us. I would recommend you request vacuuming of the room as I don't think this was done during the entirety of our stay although I was just judging this by the small bits of dirt I could see remaining each day when we got back to the room. Staff are very friendly and helpful. I would definitely consider staying here for other short trips to Melbourne. If you are the type who likes to spend a lot of time in the hotel, you may just want to consider a larger room size than what we got.
Was in town for the Australian Open for 4 nights. Location of the hotel was great, less than 10 minutes walk from Southern Cross Station. It was within the free tram zone, and a tram stop was less than 5 min away which brings me to flinders station and straight to Rod Laver Arena for the tennis. You can also walk to the DFO South Wharf for shopping at discounted rates. The shower in the matchbox room is pretty small, and I imagine it would be rather cramped for a male. I am an asian female so it wasn't so much of a problem. However I do have issues with the housekeeping. Hair in the shower drainage wasn't cleared throughout my entire stay, cup was not washed even though I left it in the sink, toiletries were not topped up properly - i dont need 3 conditioners thank you, I need my shower gel and shampoo! I also read reviews that the rooms facing the street were noisy due to the pub below, thus requested for a non street facing room. Although my request was granted, I quickly regretted it as it was facing a construction site which begins their work early in the morning. Kind of unpleasant coming back late from a day of tennis action, to be woken up early in the morning from the construction noise. The staff were helpful and the cafe below serves great breakfast. So overall, the stay was ok.
Comfortable despite name of rooms. They dont feel small at all and that was dor 2 adults and a baby. Lovely staff. Very comfortable beds, pillows and quilts. Excellent place to stay overnight after the Sydney train. Feels high class but has some excellent deals.
I arrived early and expected to leave luggage until check in time and was offered an early check in. Already I felt a friendly and accommodating vibe. My Courtyard Room was perfect! I have stayed in this hotel before and it never disappoints. The stand out for me are the staff, they are so accommodating and friendly. Joanne & Jessica made my stay extra special this time with their helpful information and friendliness. See you again soon!
I used to stay at this hotel almost weekly when it was The Pensione. It was a lovely boutique hotel. I stayed one night due to issues at my apartment building and found it old and tired. Mould in bathrooms, dirty towels and bath mats. Staff were as friendly as ever. Best Western need to invest in some upgrades.
Great location the rooms were great just small. Nice they had a roof top area which was small but no view but quiet and private. The desk was very helpful and friendly. Easy access to the free downtown tram and easy walk to the water and restaurants.
Very close to Southbank, Southern Cross Station, Aquarium and a 10 minute walk to the city.Great staff and a good little restaurant at the front for breakfast/brunch.Pltnty of other restaurants a short walk away
My "matchbox" room had everything that I needed. Comfortable single bed, fridge, TV and air conditioner. The building is old and solid so I actually did not need to turn the A/C on when I was there at night, even though it was 42C outside during the day. Reception staff were friendly and efficient. I never had to wait long for a lift. Located a couple of hundred metres from Southern Cross station and many trams passing the door or nearby. There was a building site next door but nothing was happening when I was staying. Might be noisy during the day if the builders were working.
Our travel agent booked us in here as part of our honeymoon trip to Oz. Having looked at the pictures online we went with their recommendation. Unfortunately the rooms don't resemble the professional photos. We were so disappointed. This was our first hotel of the trip and should have been for four nights. We managed 2 nights but couldnt bear another two. Ended up paying a lot of money to stay somewhere else even though we had paid for 4 nights here. I can't add much to the other negative reviews other than to say that I can only describe the hotel as a hostel. If that's what you're looking for then it's fine. For us we were on honeymoon and wanted something of a much higher standard. The rooms and bathroom are tiny. The sliding door closed leaving a large gap so no privacy to bathroom. Sink would spray water all over floor. Shower sprayed water everywhere but on me. Whole hotel is drab and in major need of a refurb. There were holes and filler in walls. Rips in carpet. Best Westerns in UK are generally of a good standard and the reason we booked. Had we known the standard in Oz was bordering on a hostel we wouldn't even have considered. On the plus points, staff were friendly and location is ok.
The hotel is very well located, just a short walk from the Southern Cross Station and it's close to many trams stops, which make the sightseeing easier. The room is spacious, but the toilet inside is a bit small, although it hadn't implicated the staying. The staff was helpful and cheerful.
I had to laugh at how many people were struggling to fit through the shower door. Really? It's fine, unless you are really obese. Most people will not have a problem. And given they make the bathroom and rooms on the small size, means the rooms are small and thus you pay less money per night. Sounds good to me!
I've spent two nights there at Best Western Hotel. The location is great; you just take steps from Southcross terminal. It is literally situated in Downtown so you can walk to almost every attractions in Melbourne. The room is rather small as compared to its price. However, I think it is quite normal for a big city to have a tiny room like this. We purchased the room with breakfast, but I don't think breakfast was good at all. All in all, I think we could have put a lil bit more money for better hotel.
Stayed in Shoe Box room facing Spencer Street. The noise from trains, trams and traffic was surprisingly low. The room itself is quite small, although it was equipped with the basic amenities needed, and the staff are accommodating and friendly. Easy walk to Spencer street station and the Convention Centre. But not a great deal of restaurant take out options to choose from nearby. The double bed was comfortable and the curtains did a good job of blocking street light in the evening. The only thing I was not happy with was the cleanliness in the bathroom and the shower had patches of mould in it. Overall though, I was only in the room to sleep in the evening and found the hotel location ideal as I walked to my conference and to catch the Sky Bus. I would stay again if offered another room facing the street, but for work purposes only.
I really enjoyed my stay at this hotel. The location is excellent, very close to trams, restaurants and the Yarra River. The staff were excellent. They accomodated my early check in and also late check out. Very helpful in providing information for sightseeing. Next to the hotel is 7 Eleven which has good coffee and fresh bakery items. The Yarra river is alive with restaurants, music and walking is so much fun along the river. The city tram and other trams are very close by. Besides the free city tram, you can take any tram free within the CBD area. The free tram zones are clearly marked. I stayed in the shoebox room and it was comfortable and clean. Definitely stay again if I visit Melbourne.
Booked online and saw their 'matchbox' rooms but did not think this was what I was getting, so disappointed on arrival. Shower mouldy and pillows need updating. On the plus side the bed was comfy and staff friendly. Better city hotels in this price range.
excellent choice when sightseeing in the city. stayed in the shoebox room which is exactly what it says. small room. spotlessly clean. everything you need when you just want a base to sleep in the city. right beside the city free tram line. so easy to get to everything. would definitely recommend.
I was assign a room that didn't match the photos at all, the bathroom was ridiculous small and the bed wasn't nice neither. I have been a couple of times in the one in Sydney and there is so much difference. Staff was helpful and nice
The staff were wonderful - responsive, friendly, etc. The courtyard rooms are nice, even if small, but... the smell of smoking residue was not pleasant. It comes and goes. Initially the staff said they didn't know anything about the smell. Well, not truthful. After two room changes, and continuing issues, they admitted it is a problem for them, too, in the check-in area. They put fans in, and that helped. I put a towel at the bottom of the door to stop air from the lobby from entering - that all helped. They need to say no smoking anywhere, and, replace carpeting, upholstery, curtains, and anything else that holds the residue of old smoke. Would I suggested here again? Only if they get control of the smoke issue. Another positive - they were very responsive to some unforeseen glitches. Everything was great except the smoke smell.
Great location and clean, which is all you really need. 24 hour reception as well was useful. The airport bus and tram run right by & various attractions are a short distance away. Didn't try breakfast due to hangover.
Stayed for one night in the lovely courtyard room. I cannot speak highly enough of the excellent staff, location (barely 100m from Southern Cross Station) and cleanliness of the Best Western Melbourne. Check in and check was very smooth and easy. Exceptionally convenient and cosey I am glad I chose to stay here! New management is doing great things!
I spent a week here while attending a conference at the Melbourne Convention Center. It was comfortable, quiet, and a short walk to the Convention Center. Breakfast was basic but decent. I would return.
What a great little hotel!! We love that they market their rooms true to size! They know they have small rooms - so they don't hide it! Matchbox and Shoebox anyone? We opted for the Courtyard room, and even though small (15m2) - it more than met our needs!! The bathroom was super spacious, shower was excellent- good water pressure and nice and hot, plus decent shower head. Whilst the shower was open (no door) for once the internal space was large enough that water didn't go absolutely everywhere! And there was enough shelving & hanging space for all your toiletries too. The courtyard itself was super cute and private, even though we didn't use it (too cold this trip!) - having the glass door view meant the room felt even more spacious. The bed was very comfy! Only sadness is it was a double (I knew this when I booked!) but I do feel there is enough room in the Courtyard room to fit a queen easily. That would really have made our stay even more comfortable!! But I understand it may be annoying from a laundering perspective to manage different sized sheets, etc - for different rooms. We were impressed with how clean the room and bathroom was two! However, cleaning staff may like to focus on dusting the gap between the bedhead and the shelf behind - it looks like it's not been cleaned in months! I get that it may be hard to access, because the headboard is fixed to the wall - but I think it should be addressed. It lets down how clean the rest of the suite is! The only other feedback we can provide is regards the room service and water saving request. We made sure we kept our towels hung up, so that house keeping did not replace them all. This was as per their water saving request leaflet. The only towel on the floor, was the bathmat. However each day, we had fresh towels. Whilst this was appreciated, we were surprised that it was done, when they specifically request us to save water. Other than that - awesome stay! Brilliant location, def would stay again (yup even with a double bed!)
I stayed here as it was booked for me by Trailfinders. The shoebox room lives up to its name. The room itself is clean and well appointed with tea and coffee making facilities, ironing board and television. The shower room is not good if you are claustrophobic. Also the walls and ceilings are so thin, that you can hear everything so not recommended to stay on a Friday night if you want a good sleep. Staff are very friendly and helpful, so a mixed bag of experience.
Stayed overnight before traveling from Southern Cross the next morning, room clean beds comfortable. 3 of us in the room so always expect to be a bit tight, but the bathrooms.... Ssoooo small... Had to get in sideways and wouldn't want to be any bigger... Me I mean!! Amazing what can be fitted into a cupboard!
For a Melbourne hotel which usually costs $300 a night, we are paying a good price of $240 for first week of October. Best part of our stay is the very private courtyard (room #7 courtyard room). Can leave the curtains open without facing other rooms or buildings. Breakfast is basic: coffee/tea, fresh fruits, cereals, some cheese/cold cuts, and bread/croissant. Nothing fancy or much varieties. Croissant is usually very dry and tasted a day old. Worst thing is lack of hot water. We stayed for 5 days and every morning when we took showers at 7am the water was only barely warm. It was the very last day when we got up at 5am that the shower had hot water. Front desk was efficient but not friendly. No greetings of a hello when we returned and left for the day. A couple of staff did. The rest just stared forward into the street. Good to have laundry facility at the hotel. A definite plus.
What a little gem. Lovely soft pillows and bed, very clean and quiet. What a great location! Was upgraded from matchstick to shoebox room n arrival and was allowed a check in well before I was entitled. I would highly recommend for a short stay without the fuss and stuff uou get at more expensive places. Thanks
I spent the Saturday night of the AFL Grand Final in one of their shoebox rooms. For a small budget room it ticked the basic boxes. The location was convenient only a few minutes walk from Southern Cross Station. Room was clean and well presented. The room was suitable for me because I was by myself. I wouldn't recommend the shoebox room for a couple because the bed is small and there is not a lot of room for luggage.
The hotel facade was hard to see soaybe they could improve their signage. The reception area was homey and very inviting. The staff were helpful but we didn't get to check in at 11am which we understood. Our room for three was spacious with a lovely view of a courtyard. The bathroom was tight and it was hard to move around. The bed was too soft that it felt like we were on a waterbed or something. Plus, the "double bed" was actually two single beds that were put together. My husband's bed moved away from mine every time. The breakfast was boring so you should skip it or probably don't include it on your bill. Next time I would definitely stay on other hotel.
Recently opened Best Western Hotel in Melbourne city. Located on Spencer Street so close to transport. The rooms are small but comfortable and clean. Some rooms have a TV with a DVD player. The staff are friendly and helpful.
My first time staying here since Best Western took over. The rooms are still clean as normal and the staff are nice. The only real difference is that the staff are not as natural as the previous. The girls act more like robots and are scripted. I wish they would relax and have fun with their job instead of trying to maintain an uptight corporate image.
The room is not as small as described by other travelers. Instead, the room size is just nice and I'm impressed with how the hotel utilize space so effectively. We stayed at a ShoeBox and a Trio Room. Trio is very spacious and worth every penny. ShoeBox is slightly smaller but we have enough space to walk around in the room. Fret not, 2 luggage can be opened on the floor and still, we have enough space to move around. The shower space might be a little small for Caucasians but it's perfectly okay for Asians. The room is very clean, toilet is spotless and towels are replaced every day. The room was cleaned everyday. The room is facilitated with all essentials: towels, toiletries, coffee & tea, iron & hair dryer. The hotel located at strategic location where Coles and 2 tram stops are within walking distance. Crown casino is just a 3 min walk away. Will definitely return to this hotel in the future!
The shoebox room, although very small, offers great value for money if you are only sleeping in the room. The bed was extremely comfortable but I had to keep the curtains closed if I was there during daylight as my room looked directly into the room across the way. Overall the room worked well for me as I was attending a conference all day at the convention centre which is a 6 minute walk away. The staff were welcoming and friendly and went out of their way to help - very impressed with the level of customer service. On the negative side the public corridors have tired and shabby carpets and the paintwork on the doors is scuffed and in need of a re-paint. The bathroom is tiny and you have to get into the shower sideways as the door is so small - and no plug for the minute basin. As its an old building you can hear all the water pipes and the rooms are not sound proofed so when someone had a shower at 3am it woke me up.
Was told that my room was not air cond at all although a fan would b given. It was summer, imagine staying in a room next to the carpark n with the windows open n no air cond. My eyes rolled! Have to pay to upgrade to a upper floor ..much luck as a room was available. Small, squeezy but comfortable with air cond. it's only a night but was thankful coz away fr the carpark n most importantly it's cool with the air cond ..
Very convenient to transport, the football stadium and right in the city. Small but comfortable room with everything I needed, including an iron and board. SAtaff were wonderful when I had a health issue. Would stay again
