We've been traveling all over the Midwest. Best Western Hotel is the one that rules around here. We have stayed in over 7 in the last month. This one was on our way to Mount Rushmore and was recommended by a blogger. Well I don't recommend it at all. There are two separate buildings, one has the reception that's very sad looking with a same reception from the front desk. Then there's A and B in another building. These are supposed to be pet free. I'm highly allergic to cats and there were dogs and cats in building A with people lighting up cigarettes in the lobby area before going out the door. The room was old and sad with the fireplace never working. Bathroom lights are non existent with one exhaust light. They claim to have an expresso bar which has been closed since 2020, that's just wrong. We spent 4 long nights there and will never again. For Mount Rushmore stay in Custer or Keystone little great towns.
The staff at night I believe Cindy and Jeff are extremely helpful. They are friendly and hard working and very customer oriented. They are very knowledgeable about the area and if they didn't know they would get an answer I would recommend this hotel and have to people that are thinking about traveling there
This was a nice With in walking distance to down town . Room was clean BUT no view and the staff was friendly breakfast was nice Could have been hot .pillows were nothing to right home about nice little souvenir shop in lobby coffee at breakfast was very strong so I just drank the stuff in the room
Quick check In, warm indoor pool, hot tub and an outdoor pool..great hot breakfast options. Lots of parking and close to shopping, restaurants and attractions. Downtown Hill City is within walking distance. Comfy beds and nice size rooms
The location was great… I didn't really know where Hill City was but I enjoy the little town and its location near Mount Rushmore. I drove a short way to see the night lighting. The drive to the Needles Highway was short to… great location ….zz.
Comfortable, clean, friendly staff, decent breakfast. I was so thankful there were still rooms available for a last-minute booking. Love that it was within walking distance of dinner options. Would definitely stay here again if I had the chance!
Very friendly and helpful staff although all those we met were foreigners here for the summer only. English was a second language to all & some did not speak English well. Could not give advice as they were not familiar with the area. This is an old property that needs updating. It could use a lot of TLC & it would be great. The room was very large & they had a good-sized refrigerator – double the usual dorm size. It even had a small freezer. We froze water bottles to use in our coolers in addition to using ice. The room was very large. The chairs in the room were unusable as they were extremely uncomfortable. The closet door wouldn't close because the rug was too thick for the doors to close. The sink & bathtub would not drain at all. Shower water was up to my calf & had to keep turning the water off to complete shower or it would rise again. Maintenance came quickly- both instances they pulled out huge gobs of hair- gross! The outdoor pool was not open in the beginning of June. Good security as the outdoor door is locked & you need to open with your room key. Breakfast is the same thing every day. The only fruit was the same oranges every day. The breakfast was only fair. The hot food wasn't that great. No noise in the room even though it's on the main street. If you like my review, I hope you'll click the “helpful” button; those of us who write reviews live for those and it motivates us to do more.
This is my favorite place to stay in Hill City! Great location with great rooms, an awesome breakfast, and a nice indoor and outdoor pool. The breakfast is awesome. The outdoor seating is a great place to start the day with a cup of coffee and a donut. I wish they had an outdoor hot tub as that would be an amazing place to finish the day!
So the place is basic in a good location, breakfast included and decent, front desk is good, walls r tiny and I have heard dogs, kids, everyone... the worst part. Our room was never cleaned.. we complained to the front desk and guess what- the towels were brought to the room, that's it.. not even trash taken...then the room key didn't work when we came back and when we told the front desk, they reactivated it but no apologies, nothing... don't recommend
Overall we were very happy with our stay at this hotel. It is in a perfect location for seeing all the area sites and activities. We stayed in a double queen suite with a small kitchenette and separate living room area. It was important to me to have both of those for our stay. The kitchenette had lots of storage but the fridge was typical hotel size and did not regulate temperature well (started off pretty warm and then everything froze by the end of our stay). The beds were comfortable and the room was very well sized for our needs (family of 4 - two adults and two kids). I appreciated the large closet and additional room storage as well. It was nice to have two pools to enjoy but both were pretty cold. The kids didn't mind but I was not interested in hopping in. The hot breakfast was also a great perk although not much variety after 5 days there. It was a standard fare of waffles, eggs, and sausage along with cereal, toast, yogurt, fruit and juice. It was a little disappointing to see the espresso bar advertised on the site was not up and running and clearly hadn't been for a while. We would likely stay here again in the future and have recommended it to friends/family who are looking to do a trip similar to ours.
We had planned this trip for 5 months and they put us in what surely is the worst room on the entire property. Every time someone walks up the stairs the wall vibrates and sounds with the bass of heavy footfalls. The kids run up and down the hall screaming to the pool since we are only 3 doors down. Of course they had all kinds of excuses as to why we ended up in this terrible room. The worst excuse “you didn't indicate you didn't want to be near the stairs or the pool.” How were we to know? “We are all booked and can't move you.” They don't have any other rooms the entire 4 days?? Don't bother with this place it isn't worth the $800 we are paying for our stay.
This is a nice hotel, but let down by the poor staff. We used it as an overnight stop on our way to Jasper. The hotel offered free parking and free breakfast when we visited. The breakfast is basic, and the hot water for the tea just trickled and staff didnt want to really help. The rooms are big and clean. Having booked this hotel more than 5 months ahead of our trip, when we got there they had the wrong room for us.... The person on the front counter was not helpful at all. But eventually, he gave us a room, not sure if it was what we had paid for. A little poor when you have booked so far im advance, not to get what you booked and requetsed.
Ac did not work moved to new room next day but thay would not comp for first day without ac they said at least we had a room for the night asked them three times nicely but they didn't seem to care about it and just left the front desk to go in the back room were I could see him just stading waiting for me to leave.
We love staying at the Best Western in Hill City - we use as our main stay and travel north and south throughout the Black Hill area
The hotel may be dated but everything is clean and properly functioning. The staff in my opinion makes this hotel stellar! They are very helpful and nice. The breakfast may not be as huge as other hotels but all the options they offer taste really well. I highly recommend this hotel when visiting the Black Hills!
The staff was so helpful, the rooms were perfect and we couldn't have a better location. Thank you for everything. The staff went above and beyond to help with an issue from a booking agency. They saved us from having to relocate mid vacation and made sure that we were all comfortable.
Overall good stay. Had two rooms and met our needs. Lobby facilities and access to parking lot was nice. Felt safe and good hospitality.
There was a dead bedbug between the sheets along with blood stains. The sheets were wrinkled such that it looked like they were not changed. Manager came and FINALLY changed our room to a larger, cleaner, newly updated one in the main building. It didnt seem like he wanted to change our room-I was the one who had to ask. The new room was fine. Breakfast was average. The front desk staff was nice. We will not be back
Hotel has a great location. It needs an update. Rooms are tired and nothing special. Breakfast was bland and tasteless with no fresh options. Staff is friendly and helpful. Would be outstanding with an update remodel and better food.
TH BW Golden Spike is a nice place to stay in the centrally loacted town of Hill City. On the plus side are: ample parking, indoor pool, included breakfast, and location. On the downside are the basic accommodations, and the musty smell in room. During my stay, the outdoor pool was not open, but the indoor pool was and it is large - nicer than most hotel indoor pools. As for location, the Golden Spike is not in downtown proper, but can easily be walked to via a sidewalk on the main road. It is about a 3/8 of a mile away. Mt Rushmore is 12 miles down the road and Crazy Horse is a bout the same distance away in the opposite direction. The brewery and winery are 3 mile away. The Chute Restaurant is next door providing South Hills staples - Bison burgers, sandwiches, etc. Overall, the Golden Spike is a good place to base yourself for a few days in the Black Hills. Hill City (along with Custer) are probably the two best places to stay in the area. Accommodations in the area are basic everywhere, so don't expect anything too fancy.
This hotel was very clean and the staff was very attentive. The wi-fi was secure so that eliminated a concern when using it. The breakfast had a variety of different hot dishes and was well stocked.
This was our second stay at this hotel. The first time we loved it, this time not so much. Don't go for the breakfast. It's awful. Not enough, ran out of coffee, screaming kids running around the dining room. Not a typical Best Western breakfast experience. Our fridge was broken & froze all of our items & there was no temperature setting. Rooms were very noisy very late into the night above & beside us. On a good note, the room was nicely laid out, good shower, on our second day housekeeping came in & checked & left shower soap. I had already made our beds for the day. This was a nice touch that usually doesn't happen. Very close to everything we wanted to do so that was a huge bonus.
The location is the best part of this hotel as its right in the middle of Black Hills. The rest of the amenities come to expect from a Best Western are not here. Coffee is bitter, breakfast is lacking. Pool is cold and the work room is just a treadmill, elliptical, and bike.
Very nice clean hotel. Nice pool. Can walk to downtown area. Pet friendly. Not to far of drive to Rushmore and Custard Park. There is a store close that you can walk to, it had a nice deli. We picked this hotel because the closeness of so many things. Nice day rides and picnics in the park. Will stay again. Love the area.
The hotel is located in a darling town. It is close to all the main attractions that we wanted to visit that made it the perfect location for our trip. If you're a swimmer or enjoy a hot tub after traveling do not go to this hotel. They have a beautiful pool that is very cold. They have the worlds smallest hot tub. That was really just a glorified Bathtub with jets. Also not really heated. So disappointed for someone who enjoys those things when on vacation. It was one of the main reasons we chose. It is because it had a hot tub and swimming pool. The staff was very nice. They had a simple breakfast that was free. They had a cute little service bar but has been shut down since Covid would have been nice if that was open. Rooms were nice and clean, but smelled musty.
We stopped without reservations for a 5 night stay and were met by Remy who helped us book, use our accumulated points and upgraded us to a suite within 20 minutes! He was great. The motel is nice with a big indoor pool and hot breakfast included. All in all it was a very pleasant experience. Good rate, excellent room and friendly staff.
We have stayed in this hotel whenever we go to the Black Hills. It has always been our home away from home. Over the years, however, we have found that it is slowly going downhill. While the rooms are kept up, they have stopped paying attention to the details. The lobby and what used to be a restaurant, but now serves as the free breakfast room, are showing their age. The courtyard is not kept up so that it is just a place to sit rather than a pretty oasis. For instance., one of the tiled tables only has two tiles left in it. It would cost $20 to replace the missing tiles and an instant to fix it, but no one has taken the initiative. What was once a lovely garden area is left untrimmed and unweeded - just neglected. The deck around the pool needs stained. It can be spruced up easily, but no one seems to care. I am not sure if there is management in the vicinity to make certain these little fixes are maintained. We still consider the hotel our place to go, but wish it looked more cared for.
The room smelled terrible. I see another review referring to this. Management said it was normal and caused by the furniture. I would find an alternative. Additionally, if you can stay somewhere like Deadwood or Custer, I would avoid Hill City.
We travel to the Black Hills several times a year because we love it there so much. We always stay at least a couple nights in Hill City and have always stayed at this BW. It's convenient, clean, quiet and close to Custer State Park. We'll see you next time!
We made our reservation in July 2023 arrived on September 6, 2023 our planned stay for 7 nights was secured through Best Western with a Citi Business Credit Card. When we arrived we asked if we could change the credit card to our new Best Western Credit Card they said of course. After we left the hotel there we found out they charged both our credit cards for the same exact amount our Citi Card was charged the full amount the day before we arrived? We have tried for 3 weeks now to have them remove the charge on our Citi Card! We can't get past the front desk! No one from the accounting department will take our call nor the general manager. We are appalled. We are Senior Citizens and many people there were too! Check your charges if you decide to stay there but I don't recommend you stay there! This billing has been a nightmare for us spending hours and days trying to resolve. My husband has been talked over disrespected by a male who answers the phone there. This site site says don't name names but we know his name. The breakfast area trash cans are crusted with food and never were cleaned in our entire stay! I was afraid to touch anything because of filthy trash cans that you had to push to get your food plate in! Unacceptable! To date we are nowhere with the double charge of over $1000 on two different credit cards. You have been warned disrespectful staff, uncaring, and unprofessional! I hope they see this post and make amends to our over $1,000 that needs to come off my credit card!
When booking our hotel for an 8-nite stay, I booked one with a 'kitchenette' so that we didn't have to go out for every meal. I was surprised after checking into our room, that there weren't any 'supplies' for a kitchenette. Every other time I've booked with a kitchenette, it has utensils, pots n pans, dishes, etc, so that meals can be made. Unfortunately, we were very disappointed, as this had none of those items. I guess my fault for not checking ahead of time, and just assuming. Thankfully, there was a grocery store right next to the hotel, and we made use of that almost daily by going to their deli section and buying some other snack items. We did like the additional seating area with a couch, chair and desk. There was also an additional tv, but we never turned it on. Check in was easy and the employees were very friendly. There were signs on all the exterior doors that due to not being fully staffed, rooms weren't cleaned on a daily basis unless requested. That was no problem with us. They still came and switched out towels every other day, as well as emptying the garbage cans. We used the indoor pool almost every day and the outdoor pool a few times. Both were clean and had clean towels available. The breakfast offered both hot/cold variety, and they kept it fresh and cleaned off tables as guests left. All in all, we were pleasesd with our stay and would stay again.
Great stay! Friendly staff, clean rooms/facilities, great breakfast, and I especially appreciate Windsor's help with taking care of an issue concerning my debit card limit and paying for my stay. (Thank you so much for your compassion and effort in helping us get that situation figured out!) The location is great - perfect walking distance for all of the attractions IN town, and the town itself is a great central area to the surrounding tourist attractions out of town (Mt. Rushmore, Crazy Horse, Rapid City, Custer, scenic drives, etc.). All in all, an excellent stay!
We have stayed here 2 years in a row and it is very nice. Our stay was for 1 week each year and we were very pleased with the service, breakfast and cleanliness of the hotel. There is room for trailers if you are towing your "toys".
The room smelled so bad that I was forced to go to the store and buy a fan to put in the window while outside temperatures reached 90-97 degrees. Then management refused to help us out with the cost of the room and lied to us saying that other rooms were available. We were told no other rooms were available except the 2 other rooms shown and they smelled as bad or worse. Terrible customer service !!
We have stayed here previously. This hotel is dated but still comfortable. The staff is fabulous. They are very friendly and helpful. The breakfast was great. The location is close to downtown so easy to walk to. We would stay there again.
The room smelled so bad that I was forced to go to the store and buy a fan to put in the window while outside temperatures reached 90-97 degrees. Then management refused to help us out with the cost of the room and lied to us saying that they had other rooms after we stayed in that smelly room.
Overall, this hotel has everything we needed. It was a great location and the suite was VERY spacious!! We are a family of 5 and were road tripping out to Yellowstone/Tetons, stopping in the badlands and Custer State Park, so we had a decent amount of “stuff” with us and we were still very comfortable in the suite. If I had to offer an improvement, it would be to upgrade the beds. They did sink in the middle. The only other downfall was the price, but unknown to us when we planned this trip, it would coincide with Sturgis. Every hotel increased prices around this time so there was no getting around that. Other than that, there are great restaurants and breweries around. Miner Brewery Co. was GREAT! Our kids loved the pool and hot tub, very clean! Overall, would totally stay again!
We stayed here with our kids for one night and we thought our experience could have been better. Our room was facing a trailer park and it was a bit dated. Breakfast was mediocre and the shop they had for food and toiletries was bare. No toiletries available. But it was close to everything we wanted to see so it served it's purpose.
Landscaping would go along ways. Several dead trees. Still there when we came a year later Pet friendly, love it! Hotel nice distance from all attractions. Would like to see more breakfast options. Will be staying there again.
Picked this hotel because it had an outdoor pool and indoor pool. Studio rooms were nice and big. No housekeeping during our stay. Breakfast was ok not many choices and same options everyday which got old after a couple days. Overall a decent hotel couple changes they could make and it would be excellent.
This hotel was near tons of attractions- Mt Rushmore, Crazy Horse, Badlands, Deadwood, and the needles highway ! But away from the hustle and bustle of the city. Hotel was clean , friendly staff, definitely would go back!
This is a dog friendly hotel, which is GREAT! However, the $30 per night charge was high compared to what other hotels in the area charge for dogs. Breakfast was good, but the same everyday. After 3 nights, and the same breakfast, we choose to go out for breakfast instead. The only thing changed each day was the meat. One day sausage links, then sausage patties and then ham. Everything else was the same. The room was clean, no complaints there. The front desk staff was very friendly and helpful. Parking is not the best. If you come back late at night, the lot is VERY full. If your room faces towards the back, you face a trailer park. The rooms is spacious, but set up different then most. The bathroom is in the back of the room where the A/C unit is. So when you are sleeping, the A/C does not seem to reach the beds very good and when you are getting ready for the day at the sink/bathroom area, the A/C is blowing on you. Overall, it was a decent hotel for the price (except the dog fee was high)
The staff was amazing and overall, this place is a great hotel. We were placed in an upstairs room with a "so called" patio door, which was very strange as there was really no patio and you could see the light through the door, but it wasn't loud and there were no overnight distractions/bugs. The breakfast was just fine and the staff in the eating area was very pleasant given the amount of people wanting to eat at the same time. Would stay here again.
We were booked here for 6 nights but ended up checking out after 3 due to how bad the hotel was. Room was dirty (old food containers behind bed, carpet was gross). The towels and sheets were literally threadbare and very uncomfortable. One of the two chairs in our room was completely broken and after a day the room became so humid our sheets and clothes felt damp.
Just an ok hotel, overpriced for the quality of rooms. Pool was nice, workout area is very tiny. Breakfast was an an average hotel breakfast. Our key has to be replaced a couple times. Walking distance to a grocery store and restaurant.
Really friendly staff. Pretty usual layout for a motel style Best Western. We usually stay in Best Westerns to avoid scented rooms. They tend to be the safest for travelers with allergies but this one location is the first we have been to with heavily perfumed carpets, linens and cleaners. We have two rooms, the carpeted one is the worst of the two. So perfume avoiders beware. This is not the unscented refuge we're used to.
Very friendly staff. Clean facilities and very good value. We went at the end of their season so breakfast fruit was 1 apple and 1 orange no bananas and only strawberry yogurt, but their service was great. No complaints.Smoke alarm chirped at 1:30 AM second night.
Refrigerator didn't work. Light switches didn't work. Hair in shower. Music loud streamed to parking lot every day. Laundry facilities nasty. Smelly carpet. Poor lighting in room and BRIGHT lighting outside. No protein for breakfast. Fruit out first day and not re-stocked. Pre-packaged Danishs. Rooms not serviced daily. When we asked for a new room and stated frig didn't work we were told maintainence would be up to check the frig. My husband has meds which has to be kept cold so this was important. Well, first, they said he could keep it in the frig downstairs. Right. Then, when I said that wasn't happening they said they would send maintenance. He came up, checked the frig, brought a different one and left the non-working one. We had been on the road nine hours. This is EXACTLY what we wanted to deal with! Just not a satisfying experience. We has just left the Best Western in Hulett. OUTSTANDING! The manager of this BW needs to have a training session with the one in Hulett and they need to spend some money on maintenance and updates! Oh, there was an electrical bar that had SEVEN things plugged into it including another four outlet plug so MORE could be plugged into it. FIRE HAZARD! There was also an outside door in addition to the inside door. It just wasn't a safe room!
This facility is somewhat dated. Needs to upgrade. Room electrical outlets are very limited even though there is plenty of room to install more. Additionally, there are no USB charging ports in the rooms so be sure to bring a reliable charging device. Furniture and counter space is very limited.
Great location to Mt Rushmore and Custer State Park. Cute small downtown, food market and eating places within easy walking distance. Clean and staff were very nice and helpful. Fairly quiet where we were. By the pool door so noisy sometimes when people went into pool but it closed at 10pm and quiet after that.
Awesome place to stay Easy to get to tourist destinations. Wish Hill City had fast food places and also places that delivered food Employees were so friendly always willing to help in any way Will recommend
Our experience with the staff as we checked in was awesome. They were very professional, helpful, and friendly. Our room was comfortable with a fun, lodge-like feel and a beautiful view. The location of the motel is great for seeing the many attractions in this area. They also serve a very nice breakfast.
Great hotel if you enjoy a super firm bed. It was clean and quiet. The pool area was nice (hot tub was tiny though!). The continental breakfast was very average. The only problem I had was that the beds were as hard as a rock. They were super firm with no give. If you enjoy firm beds this is a good hotel but my family and I had a hard time sleeping on them and woke up sore.
This is a great place to stay at when visiting the black hills! We had great service. The rooms, pool/hot tub were well kept. The hot breakfast was great! We will be staying here each time we return to the black hills!
Found the staff to be friendly, helpful, and cheerful. The rooms and dining area were clean and comfortable, and the breakfast was good, but a little limited. The lobby had a nice area to sit and visit. Easy to locate and good parking. The next time I'm in the area I will be stay here.
This place is in a great location and its quality and price were great. Staff is friendly and very helpful. Internet is extremely fast. Cable TV is limited Room has no radio/alarm clock. There is a Microwave and frig available. Bathroom is not spacious.
We spent 3 nights at this motel. We found our room to be very clean and comfortable, although it may be time to replace the beds as ours felt a little worn and hard. Hotel had plenty of parking and had easy access by car to downtown Hills. A very nice location for exploring Custer, Mt Rushmore and the surrounding area.
Stayed here a few times this past summer for work. Every room I stayed in was comfortable and clean. The double queen rooms are pretty enough but they also have larger rooms to accommodate small groups or families. I had peace of mind leaving my mother and baby there while I worked, knowing they were safe and comfortable until I got back in the evening. That to me is priceless.
Hotel is conveniently located about 2 minutes from the main tourist street, and about 20 minutes away from Custer and Mt. Rushmore. There is a restaurant and a grocery store next door. Rooms are spacious and clean. Pillows and comforter were so very comfortable. Coffee at breakfast was delicious and hot - obviously changed out often. Staff and other guests were friendly and polite. Truly a great value for your money!
I enjoyed the amount of time I was there. The room was so comfortable. The staff answered all of my questions. They referred me to a wonderful restaurant to eat. I am looking forward to a return trip. It is so close to Mount Rushmore, Crazy Horse and some wineries.
We visited during the "season" and there were lots of families and the hotel appeared full. The staff was very friendly and quick to help. We liked the hotel and will stay again. Would like a better breakfast selection. Parking can be tight.
We were very pleased with our stay in Hill City. The breakfast was exceptional! Always had hot food & plenty of choices to choose, hot scrambled eggs, fresh biscuits & gravy, sausage and many other options to choose from. The gal doing the breakfast area was the best! Always pleasant & kept the place neat & tidy. Would highly recommend this hotel! The bed was extremely comfortable, slept like babies!
This place was amazing. Everyone here was friendly and very helpful. The hotel was very clean. Rooms were very clean and spacious. Enjoyed the location easy to travel to all the different places to see.
Stayed here one night during the Sturgis rally, Even so it was fairly quiet and enjoyable. The beds were comfortable, the location is great. Only downside is that the maintenance may be slipping a bit. Decor is nice, a little dated, breakfast was typical but acceptable. Would stay here again.
Went to dinner came back to no place to park except the far corner for all the trailers in the lot. They have a lot designated for trailers had 1 truck and trailer. Returned to our room to find no power. The employee could not find a key for the breaker box so we had to change rooms after a 1/2 hour of standing in the hall (no lights in room). Moved to room next door where there were 3 beds. 1 of the 3 was a very comfortable king size, the other 2 not so much. We had to request a fly swatter from the desk, There was a bug of some sort we found. We were told the manager wouldn't be in until after we checked out and they offered no credit or any other relief. I would hesitate to stay in this hotel again.
This is a very nice hotel conveniently located in the heart of all the things to see and do in the Black Hills of South Dakota. There was plenty of parking and the front desk staff were helpful and friendly. It is an older hotel, but very well maintained and very clean. We look forward to staying here again!
Excellent place to stay. Everything was perfect; room, breakfast , people at hotel... location. Would definitely recommend and stay in Best western next time. Location within mountains and city was small and busy which gave a great feel.
I stayed at the Best Western Golden Spike Inn & Suites for the 2022 Sturgis Rally. The room was immaculate, the bed was very comfortable. The staff was always helpful and upbeat. The location in Hill City was perfect. Plenty of restaurants and action nearby. This was my second stay here. We stayed here in 2021 during the rally. I will certainly be back. Thanks to all the staff! Excellent job!
The Golden Spike is the place to stay if you are visiting Hills City! I spent three nights at the hotel and it was a great experience. The staff was very friendly. The breakfast was delicious. The room we stayed in was nice and had great air conditioning after spending most of our days hiking in the South Dakota heat. If I get to South Dakota again I will definitely try and stay here again first!
Everyone was very nice and friendly, just wish house keeping could have kept up on things in the rooms. And that there could have been more than 1 person for the breakfast to try and keep up on food, tables, etc.
I would have rated this 5 stars, but they desperately need new beds, our backs hurt every night after staying. BUT other than the beds, the rooms were clean, staff was nice and free breakfast was good!
I reserved our stay months in advanced, when we arrived we decided to extend the trip another day. We weren't able to keep our suite but they were able to offer another room. Both rooms were clean, they changed the bedding and replaced towels every other day, and the hot breakfast was just shy of rivaling a diner!
We stayed here while on holidays . Spent 2 nights here I was satisfied with most this hotel offers. The only problem we had was the bathtub was not cleaned properly. Around the tub was orange scum. Luckily I had my own Lysol wipes and cleaned the tub myself.
We love this hotel. We always stay here when we come to the Black Hills. It's has a great breakfast, pool, hot tub and plenty of parking for our trailer. The front desk staff is great. There is plenty of parking for trailers.
we had a great stay in Hill City area - highly recommend this location! We rented a side by side and hit the trails, great recommendations from staff on eating and shopping. centrally located to reach Deadwood -Keystone -Custer --
We have stayed here before, and most likely will again. We usually come in off season, so this visit was very full and loud, but still pretty good. Good location for a day trip through Custer State Park, Deadwood, Mt. Rushmore, etc. We love that area and will be back soon!
Stayed for 3 nights whilst exploring South Dakota. Great location for Custer State Park, Mt Rushmore, Crazy Horse Monument etc, and not far for a trip to Badlands NP. Room was large, comfortable, clean and well-appointed with microwave and fridge. Hot breakfast buffet every day which was always well stocked and tasty, available from quite early too which is good if you have a full day of sight seeing planned. 10 minute walk or so into the main street of Hill City which is a cute town and has a lot of bars/restaurants. There's a grocery store right next door which is great. Enjoyed our stay and would stay again.
It was only me and my daughter and got to hotel late. I felt safe as soon as I pulled in. Fantastic people who work at front desk. Room was so clean! We loved it. And we never heard anybody above us the whole stay.
During our family trip through the Black Hills, we stayed two nights at this property. Overall the facility was very clean, conveniently located and reasonably priced. Check-in was easy and room was very clean. We had a first floor room with two queen beds. Beds were very comfortable.....good nights sleep. The actual bathroom was very small and only had a stool and tub/shower in it. The sink area was outside the bathroom in the actual room itself. Rather awkward for people getting ready, shaving, brushing teeth, etc. Felt like we were on display for others in the room. Had a refrigerator and microwave. The fridge was very loud when running (hum). Lighting could have been better. Lights placed around the perimeter of the room. Very dark in the middle. Breakfast was excellent: Scrambled eggs, sausage, biscuits & gravy, cereal, breads, yogurt, juices (a bit watery) and coffee. Attendant kept area spotless. Located right on highway 385 (main road through the Hills). Lots of traffic, but not noticeable in room. Be aware that South Dakota allows the smaller, 2 seat, sport ATVs (like a Razr) on roads and highways. THEY ARE EVERYWHERE! It seemed there were more of these vehicles than cars or motorcycles. They are smaller and harder to see. Have to be very careful when pulling onto roadway. This facility is located right next to the Chute Rooster restaurant. The absolute best place to eat in Hill City & the Black Hills..
We booked our room for 4 nights and the stay was outstanding. From the friendly and helpful front desk staff, to the breakfast staff that kept up with the breakfast rushes, to housekeeping stopping in to refill and tidy the room, all made the stay even more enjoyable. A special note regarding breakfast is that it was very well laid out as well as ample seating for guests and their groups. That was a wonderful way to start the day. Our room was a 1 bedroom king suite and the space was wonderful. We had loads of room to spread out and enjoy when we weren't out seeing the sites. Downtown Hill City also has a small town vibe with shops and restaurants that was enjoyable to walk through as well as to see the steam train station. The location was central to what we intended to see from Mt. Rushmore, to Custer State Park, to the Badlands, and Deadwood and Sturgis. I would recommend this hotel for a relaxing and enjoyable way to see National parks and all the sites.
We stayed here for 3 nights, June 14-17th2022. We had a king room on the third floor of the building closest to Chute Rooster bar and restaurant. Very large end room. Clean and comfortable. They have an indoor pool, hot tub, and outdoor pool. The breakfast was the best offered on our 8 day trip to the Black Hills. It consisted of: Scrambled eggs, biscuits and gravy, sausage, ham or bacon(one of these offered each day. They swap the meats out.) Cereals, yogurt and toppings, oatmeal and toppings, mini donuts, breads, apples, oranges, juices, and coffee. Great job on breakfast Best Western! I would stay here again if ever in the area. Highly recommend, especially if you have kids with all the pools. Next door to a grocery store which we took advantage of. Walking distance to restaurants.
We stayed here between visiting Deadwood and Mount Rushmore. The hotel is clean and comfortable. We were able to walk to the nearby downtown area for a delicious pizza dinner. We were visiting midweek and several restaurants were closed, but it was nice to be able to walk from the hotel. In the morning we enjoyed a nearby coffee shop, too. We got to Mount Rushmore nice and early--and easy and beautiful drive. If you want a bit of peace and quiet in this part of South Dakota this is a great place to stay.
Average hotel in a nice location within the Black Hills of South Dakota. Pet policy needs clarification when booking online. Booked a 2 queen suite two months ahead of time and called the hotel directly to confirm I could bring our dog, because we are driving in from out of state. They assured me they would make it work. When checking in, I was told this room type does not allow pets and would have to change to a lower rate, dog friendly room. Very disappointed this happened as I called ahead of time to prevent this situation, yet it happened anyway. Plus, I am still waiting for the refund of the room rate difference from having to move to a lower rate room. Swing and a miss Best Western.
Nice place to stay and get a long rest after traveling. Staff are friendly and helpful even if they are busy with other hotel guests. Large dining room with plenty of seating for large families and groups.
We needed a place to stay while on our way to Grand Teton National Park. We were lucky enough to find this hotel. The lay-out is over several buildings. Our room way quiet and clean. Staff was cheerful and friendly both for check-in and check out. Helpful with restaurant recommendations. Breakfast was typical but tasty.
This hotel was a bit older but clean and well taken care of. Breakfast was decent and hotel was close to a lot of sites we wanted to visit. Beds seemed comfortable. Check in and out was easy and convenient.
The price was good for the room. For the most part the staff was helpful and friendly. There was a couple problems with broken things in the room that took a little persistent to get fixed, but were fixed. The breakfast buffet was good with very friendly staff.
This was a very nice place to stay. The rooms were very clean, and the entire property seemed well maintained. The gentleman at the front desk, WInzer, was exceptionally helpful and friendly. We would definitely stay here again.
Our stay at The Best Western in Hill City was great. Being in the heart of the Black Hills gave us such an adventure exploring the natural wonders and history of the area. We could not get to see and do everything and will be back
Hands down they served the best hot breakfast we have ever had at a motel!! Beautiful lobby and very friendly staff. The Black Hills are so incredible any time of year, thus location is perfect to anchor from to see it all.
Stayed at the Best Western Golden Spike Inn & Suites for 5 nights during our 12 day South Dakota summer vacation. After deciding on Hill City as our spot in the lower Black Hills, upon reading all the great reviews, booked a room here. We were not disappointed. Our room was good in size and extremely clean. The staff was efficient at checking us in and always very pleasant when we had questions. The free breakfast had a lot of good choices and there was plenty of seating each morning. We thought the location in Hill City was excellent. We walked a number of times to the main road through Hill City were there was a number of restaurants to choose from. Also, this hotel is right next door to a grocery store than we walked to a number of times to pick up drinks and snacks. The Golden Spike also has a very nice outdoor area with tables and grills. One evening we took our takeout dinner from a local winery to an outside table and had a picnic dinner - oh what a view of the Black Hills. Definitely would stay here again.
My family of 5 (kids 12, 11, 7) stayed here two nights on our way back from Montana to see Mt. Rushmore and the Black Hills. Location is great. We stayed during Sturgis which lead to some longer than average drive times to see the sights but overall everything was great. The kids certainly enjoyed the 2 pools. The breakfast was better than average for hotels and very appreciated. We had a 1 bedroom suite and the beds and even the pullout were comfortable and we all slept well. Would definitely stay here again on future travels!
nice motel. very clean and well kept. on edge of small town. comfortable beds and furnishings. breakfast was on time, well prepared, constantly refilled. outside area was clean and well maintained. staff friendly and helpful.
We stayed two nights at this hotel. It is in a beautiful location in the Black Hills surrounded by all the tourist attractions you want to see within a short driving distance. The rooms were clean and fresh and the beds were comfortable. The staff was friendly and welcoming. The breakfast was very good and the staff kept the food containers full and kept the dining area and tables clean. They have a spacious parking lot that makes parking easy. The hotel is located on the edge of the town, which makes it a quiet location. We would definitely recommend this hotel to travelers.
This is a great hotel in a great location. We've stayed here before and will again in the future. It's a great spot to stay to visit all of the wonderful locations you'd want to visit in the area, from Custer State Park, Mt. Rushmore and Crazy Horse all the way to Spearfish Canyon and Deadwood. Perfect spot!
I was comfortable, bed was very comfortable, room was inviting and clean and they are pet friendly and only charge a pet deposit of $30 for the entire stay. Breakfast time stays open until 9:30am which I appreciate it bc I am not a 6am morning person.
I have visited the Black Hills area many times in the past, but I had never stayed at this Best Western. This will be my go-to accommodation in this area from now on! The check in was smooth and staffed by friendly associates. Their is an outdoor, safely located, dedicated pet friendly area complete with w/ bags, trash receptacle, and grass (!) for any dog lovers traveling with their fur babies. The breakfast selections included hot choices as well scrambled eggs, sausage links, seasoned potatoes, biscuits and gravy, and toast. There is also the usual cereals, fruit, yogurt, juices etc. 99.9% of the guests in the breakfast dining area and food line were not wearing masks. It was convenient to make a plate then take it back to your room, as I did and noticed that some others did, also. I highly recommend this location as it was easy to get to Hwy 385, the Mickelson Trail, and downtown areas.
This is how hospitality should be. The staff was excellent, the rooms were great and the breakfast was the way it used to be. It is proof that the way a building looks or the lobby is presented takes a back seat to the level of service the people give. This was a treat.
Comfortable rooms with updated decor. Silent, efficient heating/AC in room. Helpful staff and nice breakfast buffet. Perfect location for sightseeing in the Black Hills- 20 minutes from Mt. Rushmore (excellent for night lighting of the monument), 1 hour from Deadwood.
My mother and I have been traveling for 3 months so we have lots of hotels to compare. This one was not good. I will start with the positive . The bed was comfortable and jetted tub worked well. Negatives: the room was filthy-stained carpets, couch and chair, terrible lighting. Outdoor seating area, broken chairs and chipped table, very small fitness suite, no weights and with no lights! I was literally in the dark. Disappointing hot tub. Could not use because it was dirty. Black ring around the top, and cloudy. Some parts of the hotel seemed renovated. Ours, Building A, was not. Even the hallway was dingy and carpet badly stained. Front staff were not unfriendly but they weren't overly friendly either and I needed to go to the front desk to get a shower chair. When I asked if they would deliver it, I was told ‘No'.
Great location. Nice rooms. Friendly staff. Plenty of parking including for trailers. This hotel is close to all of the Black Hills major attractions. Also plenty of restaurants in the area. We would definitely stay here again.
Enjoyable place to stay when visiting the Black Hills. Good Breakfast and indoor and outdoor pools are nice. Located in walking distance to HIll City attractions and to 1880 train to Keystone and Mickelsen trail for lots of different activities.
The hotel was comfortable and clean. The staff was friendly and helpful. The hotel is convenient to Mount Rushmore and other attractions. The room was spacious and very comfortable. The only complaint was that the shower was not hot enough. We stayed here during a vacation road trip and would definitely stay here again if in the area.
It was fine for 1 night. The rooms were ok. Nothing special. I was literally there for less than 14 hours. The breakfast was fine - cereal, eggs, biscuits, sausage, toast, etc. I slept well and that's all that matters. Friendly staff. Thank you.
We've used Best Western properties several times when on a road trip with our golden retriever and have had universally good experiences. The Golden Spike was no exception and better than most. There is a pet charge of $30 per night, but since the room rate was so reasonable, it was definitely worth it. The rate increases drastically on Friday and Saturday, however. The property is well maintained and has a nice secluded picnic/dog exercise area between the buildings. The breakfast was more than adequate, although somewhat limited, but for a couple of mornings it was fine. A special shout-out to the hotel staff: everyone we came in contact with was super friendly and courteous. Note: there used to be an on site restaurant for lunch and dinner, but it became a casualty of the Covid epidemic. We found the grocery store next door helpful when we learned that most restaurants in Hill City are closed on Sundays. Everyone went to Desperado's and are probably still standing in line. Plan ahead!
Great hotel for the price only minutes from Mount Rushmore and Crazy Horse. Clean rooms with great amenities and hot breakfast. We only stayed one night, but it was clean, comfortable and quiet even though the hotel was filled up with guests.
Great place, location and staff! Friendly, clean up to date rooms. The indoor and outdoor pools were fantastic and clean. Very close to mount Rushmore, crazy horse and many other major attractions. I would recommend to anyone I know, and I already have
They checked us into the wrong room. We had to move after being in our room for three hours. The hotel staff was rude and it was their mistake not ours. Unimpressed with the rudeness and no I'm sorry for the inconvenience. Made us feel like we made the mistake. Not happy at all.
The staff was curt and rude to anyone they spoke too. Carpet in the hallway was dirty looking and not clean. There is an area for a gift shop which is just a desolate void that looks creepy at night since it's dark and wide open, empty. Carpet in the room felt damp and sticky... Room never really felt cooled off, it felt humid and damp the whole night. Shower was OK. Unplugged the alarm clock to have plugs to charge items. The main positive was the large breakfast options. Great array of items and constantly being refreshed. The gentleman in the AM had a much nicer personality.
Enjoyed my stay at this hotel, very close to some great motorcycle riding. The town itself is very friendly and when I go to this area I always make it a point to stay at the Best Western Golden Spike.
Very rude and unprofessional at check-in - I think we must have interrupted the front desk associates dinner, because he kept making smacking noises? The value received for the price we paid was extremely poor, but the beds were fairly comfortable, and the water pressure was fine. The main problems: Our room carpet was damp when we checked-in and smelled very musty. Breakfast was extremely disappointing - no gluten or dairy free options for those of us with medical issues. Gym was nasty, and about 90 degrees! It felt like a sauna in there. Really tiny, and only had one treadmill, one elliptical, and one bike. Pool was large and nice though! Also had a good channel line-up on the tv, was happy to see Hallmark channel!
Great location with friendly staff. Rooms specifically bathrooms are small but the cleanliness and staff make up for that. Large decks to relax on in the evening and pool for the kids if you brought them to enjoy.
We stayed at the BW Golden Spike 2 years ago and liked it so much we stayed again on our next visit which was July 29. We had another very pleasant stay. Our room was quite spacious and very clean. Their breakfast is great with lots of options and plenty of seating. The location makes it an easy walk to the main street with its shops and restaurants. We will most certainly stay there on our next visit to this historic city!
Our family was out on vacation that was to be enjoyable. When walking into this hotel the smell of fish and mildew was to much. We were scheduled to stay 4 days but could only deal with it for two and cut our vacation short. Talked to manager and she laughed and said it's OUR fault for not saying anything when we write there! I said something to House keeping twice!
Walkable to town with very comfortable bedding! Breakfast was included with many options and a lot of room for all guests. Location was convenient for travel to all the major tourist spots. Staff was friendly and courteous.
Room in central lodge for 4 nights - room, sheets, pillows smelled of body odor. A/C strong but room very humid. Requested change of rooms but hotel full. Charged same price for older smaller room as friends in newer bldg suite. Front desk unhelpful in addresing smell in room. Would not recommend.
Employees were friendly. Rooms were clean. Food was hot. That's about it. The housekeeper forgot to bring the correct number of basics, such as towels and coffee. A trip to the front desk solved that problem. Twice. The bathtub drain didn't drain very well so we showered in standing water. We had two rooms reserved and pre-authorizations for both rooms were charged to our card BEFORE checking in. We are not objecting to the pre-auth. We expected it to happen when we checked in. We were not expecting it TWO DAYS BEFORE CHECK IN. Posting this review so others can be informed. We don't want anyone else blindsided like we were.
After reading mixed reviews of this hotel, I had fairly low expectations. I was pleasantly surprised by the cleanliness of the hotel, the friendly front desk and housekeeping staff, and the breakfast options each morning. We stayed in a queen suite, the two separate areas worked out perfectly for our family of four to have separate space with a tv in each room. The location worked well for us, almost everything that we wanted to do and see was about twenty minutes away.
Nice clean friendly hotel with pools indoor and out ,hot tub, fridge/freezer and microwave in room. Breakfast bar. Grocery store next door for anything you need. Great location to all Custer has to offer.
Urine smell in the bathroom. Sticky carpet. Don't walk in your bare feet. Of course this was only one room so that's all can actually review as far as cleanliness. There was an opening in the seal around the toilet so maybe that is where the smell was coming from. But still....
The hotel is beautiful on the outside, inside could use some updating and freshening up. Spent 3 night, was happy I could cancel up until the last week if needed to. Don't have high expectations for the price. Hot tub is really small, soaked my legs in the water as I didnt feel comfortable sitting in it with 2-3 other people already in it.
Booked too close to our one night stay (would have been cheaper has we booked months earlier), but we added Mt Rushmore to our vacation trip. The hotel was less than average. The room had an old, musty smell. The bed slept “so so”. There was nothing special for what we overpaid! Very disappointed because Best Western has always had a good reputation.
I would definitely stay here again. The entire staff was so friendly. Clean room, new mattress, good night'sleep sleep! The town is very quaint, lots to do. Convenient to Mt. Rushmore and Crazy Horse Memorial.
We loved our 2 night stay at this hotel. Check in was easy and gentlemen at the desk were very nice. Our room was in building A, 2nd floor. We had a suite with a kitchen, desk, living room and bifold doors leading to 2 beds, bath and huge sink area outside bath. It was exceptionally clean, well themed and HUGE! We felt like we could spread out and get our space after a long day of sightseeing. We used both the outside and indoor pools, both were great. Lots of towels and nice places to sit. Inside pool was cold, but kids didn't mind. Breakfast was one of the best I have had. LOTS of hot items to choose from and they all tasted really good. Lots of places to sit and have breakfast and area was just nice and well stocked. My only complaint is the gift shop and espresso bar seem to have closed up- likely during COVID. but it made that front desk area look a little deserted, but we certainly understand the COVID challenges and can hardly fault them for this minor thing. Lots of parking and easy exit. Had no issues and would gladly stay here anytime.
Nice kept up place and good value for the money. This a good location in Hill City. There was a good hot buffet breakfast. The bathroom was very large and well equipped. We had minimal daily housekeeping service.
My family and I stayed here for our summer family vacation and had a wonderful time. You could walk to just about anything you need to get to in Hill City. It was very clean, great breakfast and plenty of parking even though the hotel was sold out at the time we stayed there.
We stayed at this Best Western for 2 nights while visiting Mount Rushmore and other Black Hills museums. The decor was a bit outdated, but overall the stay was nice. Our beds were comfortable, and the rooms were spacious. Breakfast was extensive and good. The hotel was booked up, with a packed parking lot every night, but we heard and saw very few people. It was quiet and that was nice. Pricing is comparable to all other hotels in the area, but was one of just a few that served a full breakfast. The location in Hill City was great. We'd stay there again.
We stayed at the Best Western Golden Spike Inn & Suites as a part of our family vacation in the Black Hills. We stayed 4 nights and was impressed throughout our stay. Location - the location was perfect and centralized to all of the great activities in the Black Hills. Value - for extended stays, I would suggest getting a suite with the kitchenette. This allowed us to not be cramped into a small room and the kids had their space, and we had ours. For the price, it was worth every penny. Cleanliness - The hotel looks to be slowly working on updating the entire property. The part we stayed in was a bit dated, but was still clean and kept up. Overall Thoughts - I couldn't imagine a place that would be any better for any stay in the Black Hills. After spending many hours looking for the perfect place to stay, I found it here at the BW Golden Spike. When we come back to the area, there will be no need to search other locations out. This will be my go to place, and it should be yours to!
Nice hotel in the heart of the Black Hills. Pros- perfect location, very large rooms, lovely pool areas (indoor and outdoor), comfortable beds, adequate breakfast, good wifi, staff pleasant, overall well-kept property Cons- literally the most uncomfortable couch I have very sat on, all furniture except beds needs major updating, second night inadequate parking… had to create our own spot, quality of breakfast was just ok (but at least they're doing it!) Would definitely stay again. Looked like one of the nicer properties in the area!
Check in was easy even though there we a number of us all seemingly arriving at once. The staff was efficient and helpful to some of the others who needed advice for parking their larger vehicles, etc. Our room was large, comfortable and had a welcoming feel. COVID prevented a daily maid service but someone appears to have checked in every day to pick up the trash and restock coffee and things. Clean comfortable beds and an excellent hot and cold breakfast selection. The made our stay in the Rushmore area stress free and welcome home feel each day after touring.
Be aware that there are no housekeeping services available at this hotel. We were there for 5 nights and someone came into the room on the 4th day and emptied the garbage can. If you need a towel you can go to the desk and request one. When we asked what to do with the used towels we were told to put them on the floor outside our room door where they stayed for 2 days. The toilet was not flushing when we arrived. We told one of the staff and they handed my husband a plunger. He got it working marginally but it continued to be an issue. When we reported it we were told "All I can do is give you a plunger". The garden area is nice but only has 2 tables and a few chairs. It is a large hotel so it does not accommodate very many guests. The grass was not mowed within that area. The outdoor pool had many bugs and debris floating in it. This could be a very nice hotel and I wonder if the poor upkeep is due to lack of staff. Many of the restaurants in the area were very short staffed also and were having a hard time keeping up. Hill City is a great destination. We enjoyed riding the many ATV trails in the area and would vacation in the area again. We would not stay at this hotel though. There are several other hotels in the area that would probably provide better guest services.
We had an awesome stay at this updated hotel! It smelled wonderful and was very comfortable. Since we were in the mountains the views were great! The hotel is also near so many wonderful attractions! I would totally recommend this hotel to anyone looking to have a relaxing stay while accommodating small children.
… This is a heavily traveled tourist area in an unusual geography it is loaded with third grade hotel properties and we deliver they finally moved to the best western Golden Spike after chatting with Remi. We felt RESCUED ! Beds were firm and the shower hot and strong. The pool / hot tub on target and a decent size. The old travel industry had an expression: Orchid and / or Onion letters hopefully to a Corporate CEO who has empathy .... this is an "orchid". Had managed several organizations before becoming a reluctant hotelier in Hawaii. Client service is always a tough challenge; in America, it has become a disgrace. No wonder the overseas businesses are surpassing our domestic efforts. They have people who get the job done, instead of passing it along to another. Bravo Zulu to you for motivating such fine team members! It is a daunting task pleasing all the people all the time.Remi hits the mark. This hotel has been getting so many mixed reviews, and I don't understand why! My friends and I went here for a vacation, and it was absolutely wonderful. We stayed for ten days, and we don't regret a thing. **For reference, we stayed earlier on, before the pandemic. May, (for the month) was the earliest option I could choose.** - The Good - To start, the hotel is quite close to Mount Rushmore. That's a huge touring point for almost everyone visiting South Dakota- especially my friends who are big into history. We went there twice, and it was very nice since we were so close to the monument. The location was so very useful since we were so close to the downtown area for partying, but also very close to a Subway which we ordered from multiple times. THE STAFF IS SO ACCOMMODATING! One of the my friends had spilled some of her food on the bedsheets and called the front desk. A woman came to change the sheets IMMEDIATELY. It was quick, and the lady who changed them was ever so polite and seemed totally unbothered. They were extremely sweet the whole time we were there. Next up, we went when breakfast was still a full-serving buffet. The staff was very on the ball when it came to refilling the buffet trays, and we were never left wanting more food than what was out. The seating was fabulous, especially near the outdoors. It was never too cold or too hot in the eating area, and it was very filling! The food was of good quality, and nothing was mixed in with other foods. It was a wide variety, as well. Our rooms were very clean, and we were right near the ice machine. (Which was always working during our stay). They were pretty big for the price of the hotel, and I appreciated that! The towels were fresh and still warm when we went into the rooms. The bathrooms were shiny and looked as if they hadn't been touched by the previous guests- and we're all positive that they had been, but the cleaning staff was amazing at getting that dirty feeling out of our room. Our room was also close to a balcony overlooking the foyer of one exit, which was pretty nice for when we took photos. The toiletries were wrapped and the shampoos, conditioners, and soaps were readily replenished each day. - The Issues - Now, there's only a few issues that is keeping this from a five-star review. One morning, we had come back from breakfast. The staff had apparently cleaned our room while we were gone, which we didn't have a single issue with! However, on this particular day the toilet paper had a brown residue on it in my room that I shared with one of my friends. We just tossed it and asked for a new one. The staff offered a profuse apology even though it wasn't the biggest deal in the world. (They're literally such good Another problem we encountered was trouble connecting to the WiFi at first. We kept on disconnected and reconnecting every few minutes. The issue was eventually resolved, and the WiFi worked fine from then on out. Another problem was the lemony smell when we first walked into the rooms. Don't get me wrong, I love a good lemon scent, but this was STRONG- and it was in every room. It was so powerful to the point where the whole group started searching their rooms for actual lemons or lemon product that had spilled on the floor somewhere. We had asked the front desk about it, and they apologized about it, they said that they used lemon cleaner and didn't have any other cleaning scent accessible at the time to mask the smell. However, they did provide us with a small fan in each room and opened the windows for my friend who couldn't herself. The scent was gone within an hour. The next problem we encountered was the parking. We arrived when there was nobody really there- so the lot was pretty much open. We went to park near the lobby so we could check in, then drive near the side where our room was located. However, after we had checked in, the lot has miraculously filled up about twice as much as it had before. It was crazy. There's nothing they can do about it, but I just thought that I would add this for further reference. That's about all my complaints! All in all, this hotel is amazing. I totally recommend staying here, and I bet their pandemic services are more than up-to-par. Thank you for the wonderful stay, we'll be back again soon!
This is a great hotel for long stays and families. We stay here because it has the best pool. Pros: the pool is 3.6 ft to 6ft deep. There is a hot tub too, guests seemed to enjoyed it. There's an outdoor pool, but we've never been there in the summer. We stayed in the kitchenette suite. 2 Q bds with a pull out couch. For long stays, its nice to have a couch to settle on in the evenings to unwind. There's a sm sink, microwave, fridge, coffee maker and cabinets to store items. The counter and prep/bar are granite. There are bar stools for seating. Theres a louvered door separating the area with the beds from the living room/kitchenette. There is a flat screen in both areas. This is a well used hotel, so the couch and easy chair were a little warn and could use a cleaning, but for the price was comfortable. The bedding and towels are fresh and clean. The cons.. The beds are hard and its not the quietest hotel. I recommend if you have well behaved children and like it quiet, request the top floor... they have an elevator. ... If you have energetic kids who run at 6:30 am... be nice and request the bottom floor. Our last morning there was not pleasant.
We stayed here for one night on the way to the Mount Rushmore. Rooms: rather big room but it is worn out. Bed, bathroom, towels are clean. There is also strange interior design: sink inside the main room, outside the bathroom! Breakfast: it is awful! Apple, one granola snack and bottle of water and nothing else! There is only coffee, tea isn't available.
Only issue I had was the grab and go breakfast. It consisted of a bottle of water an apple a granola bar and fruit snacks. I had to go get breakfast and stumbled into the Mud Hole in Rapid City. It was the best breakfast since leaving the south! So as disappointed as I was originally I'm thankful how it turned out.
We stayed in a pet friendly room. We have two small dogs ($30 extra per night per pet) so our rate was $160 per night during off season. The staff was very nice. We had to walk outside to get to the pool. No maid service, no hot breakfast. Room was clean and comfortable.
This hotel is close to the bustling town of Hill City, SD which has plenty of restaurants and shops to explore. We booked our reservation pretty late the hotel was already fairly full so we ended up with a suite with a kitchenette which was wonderful. In the two weeks of traveling we did, this room was by far the best value for the amenities offered. The staff was very courteous and when we're back exploring the Black Hills, we plan to stay at this hotel again.
After traveling 1,100 miles in 24 hours, what a pleasure to find a decent establishment at a decent price! Great location, helpful staff, bagged breakfast to go due to current pandemic situation. Would return!
We stayed at this hotel for a week and I had read reviews prior to our vacation mentioning about there being no hot breakfast. There is a grocery store literally right next door to the hotel, so we ran over there and picked up items for our breakfast. Our room had a fridge and microwave so we were set. I called prior to leaving to ask if they had K-cup coffee makers, and they did not, so we brought out own-I am glad I did because the coffee pot they had is very small and both my husband and I like a few cups in the morning. We knew about the housekeeping situation up front, and the staff was very accomodating in giving us fresh towels whenever we asked. The beds are amazing! By far the best hotel beds I've slept in in a long time! For the price, this is a fabulous place to stay!
We stayed 3 nights in a double queen room in the main building. The room were very large with lots of room to spread out....the rooms were clean and confortable...a bit dated but were fine. The beds are comfortable and the shower was perfect for a tall person...good water pressure. The pool house was awesome....clean...nicely decorated with lots of towels..the grounds were nicely kept. All staff were friendly. The only negative i have to say is first off is no house keeping...they claim its due to covid but that makes no sense and i believe its a way to just cut corners...and breakfast just SUCKS.... seriously fruit snacks and a granola bar....they could do so much better! Over all this place has the makings to be great but with their claims of covid it dropped it from a 5 star to a 4 but definitely would stay again.
stayed with family had 3 rooms, very clean and well kept. Rooms were large and very well kept. Easy access to area atractions. Beds were very comfy. Staff wad friendly and courteous. Ground are well kept and clean. I recommend this place,Rates were great.
I will not be staying at this hotel again. Not only did they have a pitiful excuse for a breakfast, but there was absolutely no room service, rooms weren't that clean, and by judging by the bites on my face, arms, and chest, they either have bed bugs or spiders. Until they confirm they fumigate the rooms, I would be careful.
Great location for seeing the sites in the Black Hills. Rooms were clean and comfortable. We had a family member with mobility issues and they were very pleased with their room. Thete were 2 pools and W/D in both buildings. There was no hot breakfast or room service due to Covid, but they providef to go bags and there were plenty of fresh towels at the front desk. Staff were friendly. Rates were reasonable.
They blame it on covid, I think it is an excuse.i would not call a tiny bag of fruit snacks, a bottle of water, apple and a package of chocolate donuts that gas stations, sell a breakfast. We stayed in 5 motels while visiting South Dakota and every other motel found a way to provide us with a breakfast we expected- eggs, bagels, juice etc.
The room was dirty, overpriced and the staff did not wear masks. Cheetos were spilled on the floor by the nightstand by a previous guest. Sheets were wrinkled and not clean. Breakfast bag was more like a child's snack. Front desk was not helpful. The location is the only good thing about this hotel.
Our family of 4 just checked out of the Best Western Golden Spike Inn, and it was sufficient, but nothing special. That being said, there aren't unlimited options in this area, and you have to balance the pros and cons and see what works best for your needs. We were looking for something that 1) wouldn't require us to backtrack from Rushmore to Rapid City (we are heading toward Custer this morning), 2) would be clean and comfortable, and 3) would be affordable. It essentially met those needs (although I wouldn't call it spotless...the window hadn't been cleaned, the faucet was a bit dirty, there was some head hair on the shower wall, and some thread on the carpet that had not been vacuumed up. Not the worst we've ever seen, but certainly not the best. Also, the air conditioner was not effective at cooling the room, and after a 90+ degree day that would have been nice). The location was perfect for us, and that was our biggest need for this stay. I will mention the grab and go breakfast was sadly pretty awful. It was an apple, a tiny bag of fruit snacks, a 3 pack of hostess mini donuts. I completely understand this is a Covid modification, but considering the fact that the staff wasn't wearing masks, it left me wondering how much of it was genuine caution and how much was just an easy-out. We've stayed at a different hotel “with breakfast” every night of this MT/SD/WY road trip, and this was by far the most disappointing. I would rather have just been told there was no breakfast. Then the hotel could also save what little they spent on it. All in all, we would try somewhere else if we were back in the area, but we also can't rate this stay too low, as it is a 2 star property, not a 4 or 5 star, and we can't expect it to be something it's not. We slept, we were on the road quickly, and we got a good deal for the area. Those were definite wins.
300 dollars+ for 2 nights. They have no food or dine in lounge-like advertised. I know it is Corona time, but take my trash out and provide me with towels. Breakfast was a bag with Water and apple. I would recommend you stay down there by rapid city because all the Restaurants are around.
We reserved a room based on the ratings like many other people. However when we got to our room it smelt so bad of cleaning febreeze we had to open the window in hopes it would get better. One of the lights had a bulb burnt out and the type of bulb in the lamb was burning the lamp shade so we didn't even bother asking for a new bulb for the light. After leaving the room for a 20 mins swim in the pool, when we came back to the room, we couldn't take inhaling the smell anymore and it hadn't gotten better so we talked to the front desk, they said “I'll see what we can do” my husband asked for a fan to put in the window or a new room but we were told they were “booked full”. after waiting what seemed like forever to have the manager come to the room to experience what we were smelling for themselves, we decided to pack up and get our money and go elsewhere. We packed the car and my husband went in to get a refund for the rooms. Keep in mind they told us they were “booked full” once we told management we wanted our money back and we were leaving, they somehow had a new room to give us. My husband went to the new room to check it out before we unloaded the car again. After checking the room this one didn't smell like febreeze that was covering up the smell of smoke or whatever was in the other room so we ended up staying since it was almost 10:30pm. My suggestion is to ask for a room in the newer part of the hotel as things are newer and cleaner
We were very excited to stay at this hotel in Hill city. The reviews were great. This changed when we got to the room. I brought stuff to wipe down heavily touched items. I started wiping things down and realized that the room was very dirty. I spent twenty minutes cleaning this room. Then I realized the floor had not been vacuumed the comforters on the beds were dirty and the shower chair had not been cleaned. The AC vent was also so dusty that if it hadn't been wiped down it would have caused my daughter to have an asthma attack. We went to the front desk and they did send house keeping they did vacuum the floors. The front desk told me they would talk to the management and get back to me about what they could do. No one ever got back to me and when I brought it up at checkout they told me the room had been discounted. However that was not true. It was discounted because I used an AAA discount. Basically nothing was done and I was never contacted again. This hotel is in a great location and has a great pool. If the rooms where clean it would be worth paying for.
Overall it was a good experience. The kids liked the indoor and the outdoor pool. I can't complain because it was pretty cheap. I think it was about $130 a night. There are 2 buildings, our room was not in the building attached to the pool area. That building seemed newer or at least more updated. Our room appeared a little older. Had a little bit of that older room/motel smell to it. Slight, but noticeable. A few light bulbs were out and not many outlets to plug in devices. The room was pretty bare bones. Our mattress was comfortable but the kids mattress appeared to be worn out an slanting down a bit. No housekeeping but maybe that was because of covid. The workout area which was probably only used by me and my wife was dirty, but after my wife requested it, they cleaned it. Staff was very nice and quick to bring up a lightbulb or provide anything needed. No complaints at all with them. Overall good budget level hotel/motel. Would probably stay again but maybe request the other side. Also great location. Stay either in Hill City or Keystone. Great location.
The hotel is centrally located between all of the Black Hills attractions. It's comfortable, clean and I would be willing to stay there again if I ever come to the area. The only real downfall is right now they are only offering a grab and go breakfast, due to Covid-19, but that is understandable. I am a diabetic, so that really didn't help me much.
Great location to visit and enjoy the local attractions in the area but miserable and very poor breakfast (go & grab breakfast bag) and very poor bathroom cleaning as well. This hotel brand has definitely low its standards with the COVID-19 pandemia.
Stayed here a few nights while we checked out the local sites. This location is a good point to stay and do everything around including Mr. Rushmore, Custer State Park, and Deadwood. There is an indoor and outdoor pool which both were very small and crowded. The hotel is next to a grocery store so you can easily grab snacks or a microwave meal for your room. You can also walk to the downtown area which is about a 7-10 minute walk. The hotel is clean and comfortable. The walls are VERY thin though and your neighbors will be slamming doors all hours of the day. Pray you don't have a room next to you that sleeps with the TV on all night. The hotel will only warm them once then you're on your own. If you are a light sleeper please bring your ear plugs. The men at the front desk were super friendly and accommodating. The women not so much. During the pandemic no room service will enter your room. You will need to grab towels and toilet paper/soap from the front desk every day on your own. You will need to empty your own trash. To me this is not a big deal and I almost prefer it this way. We had a good stay over all and were satisfied.
The property was very dated, and tired. Carpet, furniture, etc needs to be replaced. Found garbage in our bathroom on floor and the A/C just couldn't keep up. The window in the room was broken and wouldn't shut all the way, and it was over 90 degrees outside. That said, beds and pillows were very comfortable, and the limited amount of interaction with the staff we had was good. SO, sleep and service were great. This hotel was also expensive...but they had been full for a month straight...they can get higher rates.
My family and I stayed at this Best Western because it was the only option in the area. This Best Western does have good location to the downtown activities. I'd say the night sleep was pretty good, the facilities are decent, the place was relatively clean, and the service was alright. First, my night sleep. My quality of sleep here was not bad at all. The pillows were comfortable however, the mattress felt like there was plastic underneath it. It was nothing to make you not stay at this hotel but rather a small annoyance. My Rating for this Category: 4/5 Second, the facilities. The pool looked very small for the outside option but much larger for the inside option. No problems with the pool at all. We did use the laundry which worked well with no issues. My Rating for this Category: 5/5 Thirdly, cleanliness. Cleanliness here was not a problem. There were no bugs or hairs in either of the two beds. All of the towels provided were perfectly clean. My Rating for this Category: 5/5 Finally, customer service. This was such an up and down ride at this hotel. Because of a noise disturbance caused by thin walls, we called the front desk to forward the complaint to the room. After the problem continued, we called the front desk to make them forward the complain a second time in which they refused. This was a huge problem. From there forward, the customer service was actually extremely friendly. My Rating for this Category: 3/5 The hotel served the purpose we needed it to just fine. I got a good night sleep, the hotel had good facilities, it was clean, but the service was very average in some areas. If I were in Hill City again, I would stay here again but it would not be my first choice.
This is a perfect location and close to all of the area attractions yet far enough to remain tranquil. Hopefully the restaurant will reopen but the nearby grocery store within walking distance provided plenty of food choices. Can't wait for our next trip
Upon our arrival the night auditor was very lackadaisical, and not customer service friendly whatsoever. I booked the room with one credit card, and expected to use another once I checked in, which I did. Unfortunately, the credit card that was used to book the room was charged the total amount of the stay. I called the front desk to inquire about the charges. However, they were not sure why the wrong card was charged because both cards were on file, they acknowledged that something was done incorrectly. I asked to speak to the General Manager who was not in at the moment. I was told she would be in shortly, I gave the front desk my information so she could call me back. I didn't hear anything from her, so I went to the front desk to speak with her personally. She was the rudest individual I've come across in sometime. Her lack of professionalism and quality of customer service was deplorable. I kept trying to explain the entire scenario to her. She kept cutting me off mid-sentence, and spoke to me in a condescending manner. After a 5-10 minute merry-go-round of her not admitting the hotels error or not thoroughly listening to what I had to say, she finally acknowledged that something was done wrong on there end. She made some calls and supposedly fixed the error. The unfortunate thing is, the error was not fixed. Instead of just charging the card that I used to book the room, there were now 2 pending charges of $444.51 on BOTH credit cards, that are still pending today 7/27/2020. My check-in and out dates were the 22nd-25th. I must add, all of the front desk staff in the morning was amazing. Housekeeping was sweet, and the room was spacious and fairly clean.
My family and I spent a long weekend in SoDak to see Mt. Rushmore and explore the Black Hills Region. As far as location, Hill City, where this Best Western is, was very conveniently located to many attractions (Bear Country USA, Deadwood, Keystone, Custer National Park). However, there is almost NOTHING, in the way of dining in this city! We had to travel to Keystone or Rapid City for a place to eat! The Best Western Golden Spike claimed to have a restraint and full breakfast included in the stay. This was not the case. There was no restaurant (it was closed) and the breakfast included a brown bag with an apple, chewy granola bar and a bottle of water. REALLY disappointing! If we travel to this area again would definitely look at staying in Keystone. The room was clean upon arrival but was not cleaned by anyone from the hotel during the 3 nights we stayed there. The outdoor pool and the hot tub were extremely small and the indoor pool was overly chlorinated. Overall, it wasn't our worst experience, but was far from our best.
Great big family room 1 king suite and 2 Queen beds full kitchen and huge bathroom. Big enough for entire family! Indoor and outdoor pool as well as laundry facilities. This is a great room for large family!
They had the room ready pretty quick, the hotel is VERY conveniently located. The grab and go breakfast I can tell would be way better without COVID. The prices are low and it has 2 free pools, including a hot tub. If your going to South Dakota for vacation, I would DEFINATELY reccomend staying here. If I didn't like this hotel, I wouldn't take the time to right this review.
We had a very nice room and it was quiet even though it looked like most rooms were booked. Our only disappointment was the grab and go breakfast. We stayed in other BW properties on our trip and this was the only one that didn't offer more than a granola bar, apple, water, and fruit snacks. All the other places had some type of hot choices and beverage options.
My wife and I stayed here 7/6/2020. Check-in was straightforward and the man at the front desk was friendly and professional. Our room was on the 2nd floor and the ice machine was on the 1st floor, so I got some exercise walking down and up the stairs (faster than taking the elevator due to COVID-19 and social distancing in the elevator). The room was clean and comfortable, as was the bed and pillows. I asked for an Elite member upgrade but the hotel was 100% sold-out. No big deal. The parking lot was packed, but luckily I was able to find a parking spot at about 10 PM (after having dinner at Desperados).. The grab-and-go (due to COVID-19) left a lot to be desired. When a hotel advertises a hot breakfast that would be worth x dollars to me and then gives a grab-and-go worth x cents, it feels like the hotel is just trying to save money. We stayed at the Best Western Plus Frontier Inn in Cheyenne, WY earlier in the week and they had a very good grab-and-go INCLUDING a hot item. However, comfort of the hotel and room is way more important to me than the breakfast, so the next time I am in Hill City, SD I will definitely stay at this hotel again.
This hotel is a great base location for a trip to the Black Hills. It looks to be the most modern and well kept hotels in Hill City. Rooms were clean and spacious. Beds were fresh. I would have rated this hotel Excellent if not for the fact that some of the younger staff need hospitality training.
Good location, clean updated room, helpful front desk. The amenities I needed weren't there. With covid, they did a grab and go breakfast which is more like a snack for a 5yr old. Fruit snacks, tiny apple and tiny granola bar. Throw in an option for a yogurt and a microwave breakfast burrito and I'm happy, but it's extremely frustrating to pay over $100/night with "breakfast" included and then have to go and buy my own breakfast. The fitness room had no weights and the hot tub was the size of a jetted tub. If you don't care about these amenities, it's a fine place to stay.
I'd give this inn a 4.5 rating if I could. The only reason I shaved off a half-point was because I think they could have done better with breakfast. Yes, I know there is the virus, but if local restaurants can serve food, then there could be something more than a a few sugary snacks in a bag at this Best Western. Maybe a hot breakfast sandwich with egg and sausage could be offered to go? This would be more convenient than looking around for a place to eat in a very small town. As for the inn itself, the facility has two swimming pools that are both in use. One is indoors, and the other is outdoors. There is a hot tub inside with the indoor pool. The room is attractive and western themed. As is the standard, it has a refrigerator and microwave oven. The executive chair is comfortable as is the sitting chair. The carpeting is pretty. There are Old West railroad pictures on the walls. Service at the desk was good. The clerks behind the desk gave us advice on various features of the local area. As for Hill City, it's charming. This is a good place to stay while visiting Custer State Park and Mount Rushmore.
My sister and I chose this hotel because of it's location to the major attractions. Others on this site, prior to our departure, recommended Hill City over Keystone because it would be a bit more quiet, i.e., not as crazy and overrun with children as KS. I thought I was making the reservation through BW but it turns out it was something called guest services. Warning!! While searching for hotels on these sites, make sure the reservation phone # is the # of the property. The info. listed can be very misleading. Long story short, we asked to be near the pool, not realizing that outside our door the hallway was used- and as noisy as - an airport runway for kids to thud up and down into the late-night hours getting to the pool. I called the desk repeatedly but no one answered until the fourth try and, of course, nothing could be done. Because of the noise, a ridiculous breakfast of a bottle of water, an apple, a very tiny granola bar and even tinier bag of gummies for breakfast AND the inability to reach staff when needed we decided to leave a day early. The next morning, another guest entered the lobby just before me. She was asking for the manager or owner's information so she could make a complaint about her air conditioner not working. She, like me, had called the desk the night before repeatedly until someone answered. When they finally did they told her they would come to fix it but then forgot. She has asthma and was completely miserable. The manager would not give us the numbers of anyone to which we could direct our complaints. She eventually left and I, after asking for a refund, was told he could not because I had made a prepaid reservation. I said I thought I was calling BW because that was the number listed with the hotel and he told me it was not. He listened and apologized but in the end, neither the other guest nor I got any satisfaction. I continue to call the hotel but the manager never seems to be in when the clerk (who may or may not answer) tells me she will be. Best Western is also proving to be unresponsive.
Hill City is a good central location for touring around the Mt. Rushmore/Crazy Horse area. This hotel is situated within walking distance to a couple of restaurants and a grocery store. A few places in town deliver and the staff was able to give us a list. The room was very spacious as was the bathroom. My only complaint was that there was too little lighting in the bathroom. Excellent beds and pillows. The AC definitely kept the room cool. Breakfast was in a bag to go due to the pandemic, but had some nice treats in it.
Really nice hotel right in the edge of town and next door to a grocery store. Our room was spotless as was the entire hotel. I used the laundry and it was very nice. Breakfast in the morning was either a good breakfast sandwich or granola bar, fruit snacks, an apple and a bottle of water. Everybody is doing the best they can and I am fine with a take and go meal. The desk clerks were super nice and we were just 15 minutes from Custer State Park for an early morning hike!
This review is for the "Luxury" Suites, which are still part of the complex. We made our booking through AirBnB, and it was a little bit of a surprise they were part of your average budget hotel. Overall a decent value, but if you are picky about certain things, you'll have a thing or two to say and "complain" about it. Central location to lots of the activities we were interested it. The units could use a little TLC. I didn't have a single comfortable night sleep and i know it was the bed. Old and squeaky. Suite had 2 bedrooms with 2 queen beds, and 2 sleeper sofas which had seen better days. Plenty of room for multiple people, but I don't think many would get a good nights, comfortable evening... if that's your thing. Kitchen was there... working fridge, partially working stove, coffee maker and filters provided. Common areas were nice in that they had a good deal of green space. The outdoor pool and area is TINY. The indoor pool is much larger, and the hot tub felt "dirty" (I went in and out in a hurry). Due to COVID related measures, breakfast was a bag with a bottle of water, an apple, a fruit snack baggie and a granola bar... every day. Not really a worthy breakfast but better than nothing. Also due to COVID, rooms are not cleaned or the trash taken out, or towels replaced unless you request it. I guess this is standard right now, but it wasn't mentioned at check in and as we left to go about our day on the 3rd day, we were expecting them to do the turnover (based on literature in the unit) and came back to an untouched room. Minor inconvenience save for the garbage (we had accumulated a bit of it). Just beware of it and stay on top of it.
After booking a room on a HOTEL app (hint) and then arriving in the lobby to get our pre-paid room, Remi tells me I'm not showing to have a reservation. I show him my paid confirmation with the online booking agent. He tells me to call them because they technically sold me the reservation. I call them and wait .. meanwhile Remi tells me he'll upgrade me to a suite and give me an awesome rate. So after much fanfare, I'm able to cancel my notel.com reservation. The suite was great, yes the breakfast sucked. But, it's wonderful that one person can make it all right. To the lady that left her child's sweatshirt, you need to take responsibility for your actions, not get angry because the hotel won't fix your oversight. They have much more to keep track of than you do..
I have one star because the bed it's super comfy. When we checked in another guest was upset and reported their room wasn't clean. Beds not made, trash everywhere. We should have taken the cue then. We found dog food on the floor in a common traffic glow area indicating the floors weren't vacuumed. TV went out had to have front desk come help and he couldn't fix it. We figured it ourselves. A/C is either ice cold when on or the room is blasting hot. Coffee was lukewarm. FYI that's all you get for breakfast unless you request a bag with a bottle of water, an apple and gondola bar. We will pay more money next time to stay at a higher end place.
My husband and I stayed here with my daughter, son in law, and twin granddaughters. The hotel room was clean and spacious. However, upon check out, we left a brand new baby shark sweatshirt in the room. Here is where the problem lies. We called back the same day when we realized it was left behind. The clerk did not have it in lost and found. I called back the next day and the manager said he would look into it. I told him, either housekeeping threw it away or stole it. He told me that is not tolerated by his hotel and would look into it and call me back later that day. I waited a week. I called him back, and he said it was not in the hotel. He told me I must have misplaced it. He said he spoke to his staff and they said they had no idea about the item. It was left hanging in the bathroom that HAD to be cleaned. I was livid and demanded that it be replaced. He said I had no proof that it was actually left in the room. He said that ALL of his housekeeping was from out of country, had no family, and would not have any use for the toddler sweatshirt. Our conversation was redundant. He asked me what I wanted and I said I wanted it replaced. He said if I would send receipts for the purchase (I bought 2 in town), he would see what he could do. I immediate sent him the receipt with the store name(2 miles from him) and waited to hear back. I waited another week. I emailed asking if he had purchased the item and mailed it out. I've attached his response. VERY bad customer service. Very unprofessional and insensitive to young children.
The hotel is in a great location - loved that. Was disappointed that we paid full price for a 7 day stay and received no housekeeping services. No one told us that when we checked in and grab and go breakfast was horrible - green bananas? Nope - not good.
We had a good experience with the front desk guy - such a great guy! Lobby filled with upset guests. Our first room was not cleaned, second room was a musty basement apartment. Returned the keys and stayed down the road. Apparently the general manager is not able to plan, manage housekeeping, nor staff properly... Hard to watch the front desk clerk go through this - we get terrible for him. Keeping this property going single-handedly, needs a raise.
My wife and me spent a nite here over the Memorial weekend... I made the reservation with the BW app on my phone and several hours later showed up and checked in, the young man was very pleasant and friendly. even upgraded us to a suite at no extra charge! WOW! the room was nice and clean, because of the the Covid junk going on, my wife and me wiped down all the surfaces with disinfecting wipes.. included the sink countertops and the dresser.. we did not find any dust or residue on the wipes, so that tells me they are giving it a good cleaning.. the rom was comfortable and quiet.. because of the covid, breakfast was a bag with a danish, banana and a bottle of water.. over all, this place was great and I'd stay here again!
Great central location when visiting the Black Hills. We did daily excursions from here. Had a suite and that worked well. The hotel provided clean cloths by the entrance to use to clean car windows, motorcycles and bikes. First time I have seen that at a hotel. A nice touch. Convenient walking distance to the Main Street of Hill City.
The room was fine and the service was great. The hot tub was another story. Very GROSS! Scum all over and bubbles everywhere when the jets were on. We got in before the jets were turned on and got out as soon as the jets were going. GROSS!!
Stayed here for two nights while visiting the Black Hills of South Dakota. We got in late in the evening for check-in, and the front desk was very helpful and quick. Despite our room being close the main entrance, it was generally quiet, though we could hear those above us since we were on the first floor. The room itself was spacious, which was perfect since we had a lot of stuff to reorganize from flying into Minneapolis and then road tripping 9 hours (not including stops). Beds were super comfortable as well, which was so needed after and before long drives. The breakfast provided was hot and tasty both mornings. It was also a nice variety of foods and beverages (the coffee was perfect). Only downfall is that the sink and hairdryer was outside of the bathroom (just a toilet and shower). If you have a significant other that needs to get ready in the morning, I'd recommend a sleep mask and ear plugs. We made it work just fine though. Main street was a quick walk away as well. I'd highly recommend this hotel to anyone looking to stay in the area.
This is one of the best Best Westerns that we've stayed at! Room was spacious and well decorated with an outdoors flair. Beds were really comfortable and room was perfect for us. Nice swimming pool, workout room, and hot tub. Hill City is a great place to visit!
I was worried after seeing a few bad reviews. but, I decided on this hotel. all employees we dealt with were very pleasan . the hotel manager spoke with every table in the breakfast room. he was very personable with great humor and also guided people to the local places to see, along with directions. our room was always cleaned well. the indoor pool and hot tub were great. They have a large breakfast setup. however, it was very repetitive to me. I would have liked a change. that is the only complaint I have
Clean, family friendly, quiet, and good price. Cleaning staff to manager, all are friendly and go above and beyond. Breakfast could use variety from day to day, but always tasty. Pool was clean and whirlpool was just what we needed after a half Marathon
Best Western in Hill City was so good. The desk person helped us out as what we had signed up for on our way there got mixed up, Remy, front desk, helped us completely. Accommodations were a 10. Had very positive experience with this hotel. Also location was great.
Friendly staff. Luggage carts available. Our upper floor room had two queen beds with microwave and a fridge. Unfortunately this fridge did not have a freezer compartment. Our room was away from the ice machine and elevator but next door to the pool. It was still quiet from outside noise though as the wall was insulated enough that we did not hear the pool activity during our stay. The air conditioner vents were pointed up away from the nearest bed causing a draft on the bed furthest away from the unit. We had to sleep on the closer bed. Also the fridge was now making noise. We ended up keeping the air conditioner on all night to drown it out. At an average of $107 per night we were OK with this Best Western but it's average and not higher.
Central location in the middle of everything! We stayed here for 5 days to go see Mount Rushmore, Custer State Park and other landmarks and events. The staff is very friendly, the beds are comfortable and everything is very clean and tidy.
The staff is very friendly and helpful. The rooms are a little run-down. Our toilet ran and one of the light's ballast seemed to be going out as it flickered all night, even though it wasn't turned on. We needed instructions on the blackout curtain, having endured the first night with just the "regular" window covering. We brought the deficiencies to the front desk staff's attention, but the issues were not addressed as we opted NOT to have a repair person attend to them while we were not in the room. All-in-all a good price for a decent room and a decent breakfast! We were delighted to see bananas available for breakfast! Apples, too.
Literally ALL of the staff is very attentive and hospitable. Breakfast is a full buffet. It was always full and the eating area was very clean. Beautiful, comfortable, clean rooms! Extremely good value for the cost. Location perfect for southern Hills attractions.
My family and I were very happy with this hotel. It's within 20 minutes of all the major attractions, and Hill City is a charming little town nestled in the Black Hills. Beautiful scenery all around. The hot breakfast was great will a lot of choices. I was very impressed with the selection, especially for the reasonable rate we paid for the hotel. Our room was clean and quiet. Had plenty of space. Kids really enjoyed the indoor pool and husband and I enjoyed the hot tub. Staff was very friendly at all times, and the coffee was delicious. Maybe the best coffee I've had. I would definitely recommend this hotel to anyone looking to visit the Black Hills/Rushmore area. I hope we are able to go back some day and if we do we will stay here again!
Because this is nearby but not right by Mt Rushmore, it is a bit less expensive. It is in a very small town on 16A and is a busy hotel. Room and bed were comfortable and all very quiet despite a full house. Only negative was the AC which sounded like a helicopter taking off until we stuck a sock in one of the vents which seemed to make it more stable. No breakfast available, not a big deal for us but be advised if it's important to you. A couple of really good restaurants in the little town.
We returned from Crazy Horse & Mt Rushmore after our first night to request a refund on 2nd night and check out. I explained that I'd had knee surgery in July & wasn't able to be mobile enough to continue another day, as well as needing to elevate and ice my knee. We were told that we were 3 hours past checkout (it was 2p); after waiting until no one else was in the lobby he said it's non-refundable. The room was fine, breakfast fine- but when I'm having difficulty bending my knee and I can't cancel 2nd night everything becomes sub-par.
Our room was comfortable and clean. The only drawback we had was the unusually loud air conditioning unit. It was in the 80s during the day, so the AC was needed. We could have opened the window at night, but it wouldn't budge. We liked everything else about the place. The breakfast was good, but we would recommend that you get there early. The pool and garden area are very nice. A special thing was that they had water, squeegees and rags in the parking area to clean bugs off your windshield.
Awesome place to stay. Came out to SD on the motorcycle and stayed here 2 nights so we could ride the area. Hotel really caters to bikers. Laundry room in our building and towels by the door allow you to clean up the bike after a day of riding. Downtown is a short walk and a grocery store next door. Would definitely stay here again.
We stayed here in April when I last reviewed this hotel. I had at that time reserved a two room suite and at check in was told they forgot to take the suites off the website, they werem't available because they had just opened this seasonal property that day. They put us in a one room two queen room. It was a very nice room, looked new, but we wanted the suite to make some meals since not a lot of restaurants are open in the hills in April. I was contacted by Best Western and urged to give them another try. In July we reserved a 2 queen room there for check in of September 12th. I reserved the room on their website. They have two photos next to the available rooms along with the per night cost. I clicked on the room we had in April according to the photos. When we arrived for our seven night stay they put us in the out building in a room the size of a shoebox, with filthy walls and peeling wallpaper. My husband went back to the front desk and told them we would stay one night, cancel the other six nights. Then they put us in the hotel building in a room while spacious had a bathroom with a tub and toilet and about eighteen inches of standing space. The sink was outside with a window and a/c in between. The window overlooked a trailer park. The a/c had to be turned off if one of us was using the sink to keep from freezing. We had the a/c on 64 degrees to get the cold air into where the beds are. Again not what I reserved. We ended up cancelling three of the days. What they should do with their website is state they have three types of two queen rooms, one is a flea bag, one is a dungeon with window by bathroom not in the actual room and one with a nice room with a good view. I wonder how many people would take a chance and stay here then! Fool me once shame on you, fool me twice shame on me. We will never stay at this or any other BW.
My family stays every year at this hotel. This is the only time we had 2 rooms in separate buildings after reserving well in advance. The front desk took care of the situation immediately. Friendly manager greeted everyone at breakfast. My mother wishes for walk in showers in the handicapped accessible rooms.
We stayed here for two nights and I was impressed. We checked in later in the evening but the front desk staff was nice, helpful and quick. The room had space, the bed and pillows were comfortable and it was clean. The sink is outside of the shower which isn't a big deal. Our room was the main level so the only con is that we could hear people walking above us. The hot breakfast in the morning (eggs, sausage, gravy, biscuits, potatoes) was great. The location is good as you can walk to main street in 10min. You don't have to worry about noises from the street while you sleep - honestly, it might've been some of the best sleep i've ever gotten in South Dakota. The parking lot was easy and offered room for everyone. If I were to visit Hill City again, I would absolutely stay here a second time.
Our room was/and is in need of some updates. The carpet needs replaced. There was a big snag and was either faded or either a dirty place near the bathroom. You could also hear noise from the road. Breakfast was ok. Manager did come by greeting people.
We stayed the night here on our way to Yellowstone, after visiting Mount Rushmore. It has a good location and we were able to see the mountains outside our window. The only thing we didn't like was the bathroom was small with the toilet and shower and the sink outside.
Very good experience; great room amenities; I was particularly impressed with the breakfast service...the buffet was served as a double line, making it move quickly; they actually had two people keeping food replenished and tables cleaned. I would add that our group of five had a great dinner next door at "Chute Rooster's".
The check in was easy and uneventful. Everyone that worked at the hotel was courteous and friendly. Our room which was a Queen Suite Kitchenette was spacious. The bathrooms had been recently remoldeled and the we had instant hot water at every shower. It was not a luxurious property but was clean and comfortable except for black marks from luggage etc hitting up against the cabnets at the bottom. My Clorox wipes got the black off easily The beds were the only thing I really had a complaint about, they were not real comfortable. The breakfast was better than most because they make their own waffle mix and I think the eggs were real and not a mix. The parking lot was full every night so that attest to the popularity of the property. The levators worked great. I would stay there again.
Raining like the dickens when we arrived...parking was a ways away from the stairs we had to climb to our room...wish we could have had a valet or elevator since raining! Stair case went 5 rooms away from ours, so had to double back in the rain...no fault of the motel, but really got wet from no protection from the rain! Room and amenities were fine. Great restaurant next door! Seafood! Nice change!
Perfect hotel for our travels. Great location. Close to Mt. Rushmore and Crazy Horse Monument. Great for short day trips to Deadwood and Bear Country USA. Wonderful staff and excellent food. Will definitely stay again when back in the area.
We booked a suite for our family of 5 (kids ages 3 months, 4 and 6 years) and it was perfect. The living area was very spacious and perfect for the older kids. The bedroom was also very roomy with plenty of space for the pack n play. Everything was clean, staff was very friendly, pools were nice, breakfast good.
Hotel was a nice facility. Staff was very helpful. Breakfast was good. The only problem we experienced was tepid water for the shower. As I checked out another guest was complaining of the same thing. Other than that everything was great.
Beautiful hotel. We had a 2 Queen suite. Separation from sleep area and living area. Full sized couch, easy chair, desk, micro, fridge, coffee pot, sink and small island to eat on. Double sinks in bathroom. Separate toilet/bathtub. Comfy beds, pillows and blankets. Desk clerks so friendly. Coffee available in lobby all day, and if you have a “sweet tooth” pies, ice cream and various desserts for purchase. Breakfast standard fare and served until 9:30 am. Western type decor.
Wife and I were here for 2 nights during Labor day weekend. The location of the hotel was central to everything we needed. It was only about a 35 minutes drive with our rental car from Rapid City Airport. Once we arrived around 3pm, our check-in process was friendly and simple. Our room was clean, WiFi worked great with VPN. We had 2 good night sleep here with good sound proofing. But do beware, the beds here are old school springs. So it gets really bouncy when 2 people are on it. It's not exactly the most comfortable, but it did its job. There was a supermarket right next door to the hotel, which made road trips convenient. From the hotel we were able to do the Wildlife loop after checking in Friday late afternoon. On Saturday starting at 10:30am. We were able to drive the 385 with lots of scenic stops to Deadwood for lunch and sights, then onto Spearfish Canyon Scenic Byway to the Devils Tower in Wyoming, back from the 24 down to Vanocker Canyon Rd and loop back to Crazy Horse memorial, then back to the hotel by 7pm. That's how central this hotel is. On Sunday, we visited Mount Rushmore, Walls, and the Badlands Loop. It is nice that the hotel included simple breakfast, but they do need more seats as it fills up quick and there are always people standing around waiting for seats. Food around the area however is terrible coming from LA. But it is expected. We end up just making our own using what we can find from the supermarket next door. We did have great coffee at Annie Lode Coffee Cabin down East along the 16/385. Overall it was a great hotel in the middle of a beautiful area.
This was a very nice, clean hotel. We had a suite which was perfect for our family of 4. Beds were comfy, sheets were soft and breakfast was really good. Tiny pools but they were clean and well maintained. This is a great hotel for the price.
The room was clean and a great size. The check in process was smooth. The breakfast was very nice and the breakfast room was very friendly and accommodating. My complaint was their coffee shop. It didn't open until 5pm? So very strange to only need espresso in the PM. So fine, we went at 6pm only to be told their machine takes 4 hours to heat up and that most of the time it was a pain to deal with so they just don't bother?????? So here's an idea, turn the machine on at 1pm so it's ready at opening. Or better yet, turn it on at 2 am so it can be ready by breakfast...... just a suggestion! Also some of the staff seemed to have nothing but complaints to say about their employment and some of the clientele. Overall the room was great!
Loved the location. Our room was a suite and was perfect size for a family. Rooms clean. Air doesn't reach living space so bring a fan. Breakfast was a nice option and wasn't too bad. I wish the coffee shop was open in the morning as that is when most people want coffee. Hours were 5-10pm. I went at 9:00 one night to try it out only to be told they were closing early because it was slow and already shut down. Asked if they serve iced coffee also and was told no because ice machine was broke. I'm pretty sure there are plenty of working ice machines in the hotel. Couldn't get ice cream or bakery items until 5pm. So weird. Would stay again but request a top floor so I'm not woke up at 5:00am by kids above us jumping off bed and running! Hill city nice location for all area attractions.
Staff was very attentive to our questions and worked to resolve the couple issues we had. Breakfast was good and plentiful. Our room was very clean and nice but had a bit of a musty smell and dampness in the room which was on the second floor room. Indoor swimming pool was busy but worked well with the cool August evenings it was however very smelly with chlorine. Overall we enjoyed our stay.
Hotel is located in convenient area, liquor and grocery store walking distance. Close to all driving attractions. Great hot breakfast, friendly staff, would of enjoyed eating breakfast on the patio but was closed due to repairs. This hotel is busy with lots of families. Would stay again next trip to black hills.
Best breakfast during our 2 week trip thru Wyoming's parks-warm waffles, eggs, hash browns, meats, cereals, etc. huge indoor and outdoor pool with hot tub to relax after a long day hiking. Rooms are clean and quiet but mattress a little soft. Overall great location and staff for an enjoyable Black Hills stay. Would stay here again if I'm the area! Grocery store, gas, and restaurants all nearby.
What a great experience! The staff, from the manager Ryan to all of the front desk clerks and housekeeping are beyond helpful! They make sure you are happy with every aspect of your stay. Very Clean and Comfortable Beds.
We had a very large suite (room 151) with 2 rooms and 3 beds - a King in one room and 2 queens in the other. So very comfortable and spacious for us. The outdoor swimming pool was a welcome solution at the end of our hiking days. The staff are super friendly, house keeping staff very efficient and the location is great for exploring the Black Hills area. WiFi was unreliable and breakfast was rather bland - we have been to plenty of other Best Western hotels that offer more variety. We chose to have breakfast elsewhere on 2 of our 4 mornings even though breakfast is included in the price at Golden Spike Inn. Overall, this was good without being great.
The hotel was excellent! Our family enjoyed the easy access to all the sites and monuments. They had a great pool indoor and outdoor. We definitely would stay here again! I gave 4 stars for the room only because the room was muggy and humid when we arrived that our beds were a little wet. We opened up the windows and all was better. Other than this small thing everything was wonderful!
Great stay. Nice pool inside and out. Tip: eat the free breakfast early. They were out of potatoes the first day and eggs the second. However there is a great manager there who took the time to explain how that happens on a busy day. They also add all the hot food above and beyond hotel requirements. All the left over food is tossed out and hash browns took a half hour to make so hard to get it refilled late in the morning. Over hearing my complaint he arranged for more eggs. Very accommodating both server and manager. Do them a favor and don't go the last minute! Thanks for the eggs.
We spent 5 nights here, using it to base out of to explore Custer State Park. Nice clean rooms, nice bathroom, and the most comfortable beds! Also a nice handy grocery store next door, that has nice bakery items, along with a deli.
The staff was friendly and helpful and quickly responded to a concern. The room was clean and comfortable. Marvelous breakfast with a wide selection and lots of seating. The hot tub was very welcome after a long day of traveling.
BW Golden Spike is perfect..It's located in the middle of all the major attractions. Rooms are clean and fresh.. breakfast is hot and many options. ( Kids LOVED IT) The front desk goes above and beyond helping you with questions and directions. You couldn't ask for a better place to stay.
I had second guesses about the city and hotel but once we got there I couldn't have been anymore happier!!! Everyone was friendly and the hotel was very clean. Great location. I will tell everyone I know that thius is the place to stay if ever they are in South Dakota!
Stayed here with family while visiting Mount Rushmore. Arrived late, had a quick check in. Room was small and outdated but clean. The breakfast and pool areas both made up for the room. Good location.
Hotel is close to Mt. Rushmore and Custer State Park so that is a plus. The room/suite was spacious and clean and the bathroom was also updated and clean. The beds were comfortable, Would recommend and stay again.
Stayed for one night while on a family holiday with our dog. The pet fee is now $30 but it was $25 at the time we book ed and they honoured this. However, the pet facilities are rather minimal and well below those of other hotels with far lower fees and $30 is the most expensive pet fee I have seen. The room we had a was clean and large but had no outside window and instead opened onto some sort of utility corridor which they had at least left the door open to so there was some minimal sunlight but the room was perpetually dark even when there was bright sunlight outside. Hotel security was also lacking. The door at the end of the corridor did not even latch, let alone lock so anyone could easily wander into the corridor from outside. Worse, the deadbolt on our door was almost impossible to engage and, once I did manage to engage it, was very hard to open in the morning. Breakfast in the morning was very crowded but ok. Overall I thought the hotel was rather mediocre and overpriced - the later is why I am only giving 2 instead of 3 stars. It's certainly not one that deserves a certificate of excellence.
We stayed here in one of the suites for two nights as we explored this area of the Black Hills, so we were gone during most of the day. The rooms are standard and a bit dated, but they were clean. There were so many people at breakfast that the staff had a hard time keeping food stocked, so we only ate breakfast there one day. Overall, okay stay.
This hotel has all the services you need for a great trip and a convenient location. We also liked that it was 'old style' with few floors, laundry room available to use, a fitness room and pool. The wall coverings are a little dated but the rooms are clean and the breakfast offered options for all diets/preferences. We were very pleased with the staff as well.
This hotel looks brand new and the staff is so responsive. Upon checking in we even got an upgrade to a suite which our two boys were thankful for! This is situated in the beautiful Black Hills and close to many restaurants and shops. Will definitely be staying here again!
The location was perfect to everything we wanted to do. Beautiful rooms kept very clean. Breakfast was good. Had a great indoor and outdoor pool that my son loved. The outdoor space around the property was clean and enjoyable too.
Stayed two nights here. Excellent location to use as hub for exploring the area. I was impressed with fast service on request for repair on dead bolt. Housekeeping supervisor reported issue and maintenance (Martin) was there within 10 minutes. Excellent service at breakfast buffet. Would stay here again.
We were in a family suite room of some sort on the third floor with a kitchenette and it worked out well for us. We checked in really late and the desk agent wasn't the friendliest, seemed like she wanted to talk as little as possible, but otherwise interactions with hotel staff were great. Breakfast was free and the kids enjoyed all the variety available. Pools were clean and the kids had fun swimming at night after exploring all day. Laundry facilities were fine but costly ($1.50 to wash, $2 to dry I think); other hotels during our trip had free laundry facilities. Location is was excellent, close to Crazy Horse, Mt. Rushmore, Custer State Park, Jewel Cave, etc. This made a great base to see the area. Parking was a bit of a pain with large trailers taking up four spaces some nights. If we're back out that way we'd definitely consider staying here again.
This hotel was just ok. The price was decent, the pools were fun, the breakfast was fine but always way too crowded with no where to sit. Our room had an awful “fishy” smell to it. The shower had mold in it and our reservation was split in 2 so we had to change rooms mid-stay. We ended up cancelling the 2nd half of our reservation and going to a different hotel.
We stayed at this property with a group of 23 people, mostly high schoolers. the staff was welcoming and we enjoyed the swimming pool a lot. We had a great experience and would stay here again. It's proximity to Mount Rushmore was a definite benefit.
We recently traveled with our adult daughter, son-in-law and four grandkids (oldest age 7) to the Black Hills, then on to Cody, WY and ultimately, West Yellowstone, MT. We ended up in Hill City at 5:30 am (thought it was 6:30 am, until we realized they're in MST) and didn't know what to do. The children had just slept through a 9 hour car ride and the city was barely awake. We ended up going to the hotel at 9:00 and explaining our dilemma. They moved mountains and got us into a great room by 10:45 a.m. The staff was amazing. Every time we saw anyone, from the front desk team, to the breakfast crew, to the housekeeping personnel - everyone was incredibly friendly and helpful. If we are ever in Hill City again, we will definitely stay here! P.S. BEST complimentary hot breakfast (out of our nine day trip) was here at this hotel!!
We had two great days here. At the last minute, I had to add a second night to our stay and there was no problem. We had a nice, big double queen bedroom. A buffet breakfast is included with the rate. Offered are eggs, made differently every day, sausage, bacon, potatoes, biscuits, oatmeal, make your own waffles, donuts, dry cereals, apples, oranges, bread English muffins, hard boiled eggs, yogurt, juices. Attached to the hotel is a little boutique, there's plenty of places to sit in the lobby and they have a small area with a computer for guests' use. Also in the lobby is a small counter to purchase ice cream and other snacks. The location is excellent. Very close to everything whether in Hill City or Keystone and Mt. Rushmore and Crazy Horse. The staff is exceptional. Everyone so nice and helpful. There is plenty of parking in their big lot. You can't go wrong staying here. This is a terrific Best Western.
This hotel was fantastic in every way. check in went very good. I am disabled and walk with a cane, they gave us a room that was across from the elevator. We had a double queen room that was large and comfortable. The internet was easy and fast. The free breakfast was great with a big selection. The hotel was very clean. I would recommend this hotel to everyone. G. Wilkins
A very nice Best Western, it looks to have been newly remodeled inside and out. Stayed in a very a spacious “oversized” double queen room. The breakfast was excellent, one of the best continental I've ever had. The location was good too.
We stayed in a kitchenette style room for two nights. The room was very nice, but here is a tip - you may want to bring a portable fan (especially during the summer months) because the air conditioner is a window style unit, and there are no air vents in the "living room/kitchen" part of the room. If you were to shut the partition between the bedroom and the living room, you will basically have no air circulation, especially if someone sleeps in the pull out couch. I actually went to the front desk to ask if they had any fans to borrow, and they did not. The staff was very friendly and the breakfast was better than expected - a great variety for a free breakfast. Would definitely stay here again.
We stayed at the Golden Spike Inn 40 years ago. It brought back a lot of memories. We celebrated our 49th anniversary this year and wanted to ride the steam engine. This is a good central area to access some of the things we went to see.
This is an awesome hotel. Best Western Hotels are always very nice, but this hotel is "exceptional!" Granted, Hill City, SD is a tourist town & this is a large hotel, but this hotel is very well run, clean, great amenities & we would only stay there again when revisiting Hill City!
The room(s) were clean. As a family, when we arrived the suite was very clean, however, the fold out had a spring missing and the mattress was disgusting. That was corrected for us. We had to switch suites because the room had been previously booked after 2 days. The second suite was unbelievable. Started with the refrigerator door opening backwards. The door opened from the side against the wall. The cabinet doors were backwards as well. As well as the hot and cold in the sink outside the bathroom. The shower was set up for people under 5'6". Breakfast was the same, only variation was sausage links versus patties. One bathroom per suite for families is really not sufficient, especially as the lobby and/or pool are not close. Was told by other travelers that the suites used to be apartments, I guess the building was purchased by the hotel and renovated. The pool was cloudy and did not seem clean. The staff at this hotel was extremely helpful and polite.
I was very pleased with Best Western, we hadn't made a reservation so walked in cold. They were very helpful to get us a room. Rooms are clean and pleasant, breakfast every morning the usual eggs, bacon, waffles etc. The only thing that put us off was we wanted to use the hot tub and pool and there were kids taking up the whole area never got to use it. I'd watch that more its not a babysitter. Great location for eating out. You can drive to all attractions in the area. Had a great time.
This hotel had great beds and was very clean. There was a full-service breakfast that offered many choices. That location of the hotel was perfect for visiting the national and memorial parks close by.
The poor facilities (non-working hot tub, disgusting conditions, etc.), food service (didn't receive what we ordered, waited far long than estimated) and AWFUL 'free' breakfast (we would rather pay than eat that 'free' food) will have you looking elsewhere.
Thank you for an absolutely great stay! 5 nights! I would highly recommend. The location was perfect to see all areas of the Black Hills and Custer State Park. Hill City is a great little area. Please stay here for a nice vacation.
We had a suite with two bedrooms with queen beds and a pull-out sofa sleeper in the living room. It provided plenty of room for all six of us. They also had an extra sink outside of the bathroom so some of us could be brushing our teeth, while others used the shower or toilet. This hotel is very conveniently located near to Mount Rushmore and Custer State Park with plenty of parking and easy access from the highway.
We stayed four nights at this hotel while visiting the Black Hills, Mount Rushmore, Custer State Park, Badlands National Park, Jewel Cave, etc. Its a comfortable hotel on the edge of Hill City (15-20 minutes to walk into the centre). Breakfast is average but ok. There is no bar or restaurant in the hotel. They have a coffee shop which they planned to open soon but was not open while we were there. Good swimming pool. Comfortable bedroom. One drawback was we had the room beside the pool and had a constant flow of children running past our door and the smell of chlorine from the pool. Wifi is free and in all rooms. Greta location for visiting all the attractions of the Black Hills area.
We are on a road trip through the Midwest states and I can hands-down say that this is the nicest Best Western we have stayed at so far! The room was huge and the beds were very comfortable! There was ample storage space and the room could've slept 6 (two queens and a sofa bed). The breakfast was amazing and the front desk staff was polite and welcoming!! I would recommend everyone to stay at this Best Western, you won't regret it!!!
Our room was very nice! We had a Queen Suite. Everything was clean and tidy. The only thing that was not my liking was the bed. I didn't care for the spring mattress. My Husband was fine. Loved the kitchen.
This is a rustic style hotel, the breakfast was a little less then we would have liked. The eggs were just an egg mixture placed in a mold to form a small circle. Scrambled eggs or hotel omelets would have been better. Other than that, it was a good meal with plenty of seating. Lots to do in the area.
We were in the area to see Mt. Rushmore, Custer State Park, Crazy Horse and Deadwood. The hotel is convenient for the area. Easy to get to all locations and is right off the highway. Hotel staff were pleasant and recommendations for places to eat were helpful. Room was clean and large enough for the two of us. We were not in the building with a pool and it was a little cool to walk to the other building. It did snow when we were there but it was not a problem. The breakfast could use some help. It is the usual items but the eggs were watery and the oatmeal was clumpy. We thought there was a coffee shop with the hotel but it was not open when we were there. Check out was easy and would stay here again if in the area.
We stay each visit at this hotel in Hill City its a very convenient place to do day trips from. Cloths shop in lobby needs items for younger women. Nice pools also. An outside and larger indoor one. Breakfast had many options and was well supplied by friendly staff.
My first time at a Best Western and was pleased with the room and location was convenient to everything in the area. The indoor pool was nice and the spa was nice and hot. I will definitely be staying here when coming back.
My husband and I stayed at this hotel two nights over Easter! We were close to Mount Rushmore and Crazy Horse. The staff was very helpful and suggested that we go to Mount Rushmore at night. So we went around five and stayed until dark. We were so thankful for this advise because you get to experience the mountain during the day and at night when the lights shine on it. We also enjoyed Crazy Horse and Custer Park, which is a must! The hotel was clean and had a good quick start breakfast. Well worth the price.
We stayed May 31-June 3 and the rooms were clean, the personnel friendly and helpful, in fact my niece and her 4 children and a cousin also stayed in this hotel. The hot breakfast buffet was so yummy, with great selections that changed everyday. I will definitely stay here again ❣️
Conveniently located close to Mt Rushmore and the Badlands. On the way to the hotel we stopped at Devils Towers then to Mt Rushmore and the Best Western. The 2nd day we saw the Badland and Custer State Park.
Trusty Best Western has this lovely hotel in the heart of Rushmore/Black Hills area. Indoor pool and whirlpool is clean and comfortable. Our room was near the main entrance, but we never heard the door open or close - very quiet. Breakfast offered scrambled eggs, sausage, fresh fruit, rolls/donuts, cereal, waffles...
We were very pleased with our stay at this Best Western. The front desk staff was helpful and friendly. The room was immaculate, comfortable and nicely decorated. The price was reasonable and included a delicious breakfast. Close to Mount Rushmore, Crazy Horse, Needles Highway, and more.
I have stayed in Hill City twice before at another hotel in town. This was our first time staying at the Best Western and this hotel blew the other one away! Very nice modern hotel, the pool was great, rooms clean, friendly staff, and delicious breakfast! Couldn't have asked for anything better for the price! We will definitely recommend to our friends/family that are planning on visiting the area.
In February I reserved a two room suite for six nights in April. Upon arrival at the hotel we were told the building with the suites was not available as this was the first day they were open for the season. We asked if this was just for our first night and we could move into the suite the following day and the clerk said, 'no, we don't even have the water turned on yet in that building' and again repeated this was the first day they were open. Was April 5th a surprise to them that they were opening? We received a phone call an hour before we arrived with no message left that was from them. Why not leave us a message? We could have had time to check other hotels and decided what to do instead of it being dropped on us at check in. I spend a lot of time reviewing hotels before reserving them. One of the things we want is a place other than a bed to sit. The room we ended up with had one desk chair. This being the off season with few restaurant choices we had brought provisions for making a few meals. No such luck in the room we received. Why were the suites even listed on their website for that week? So buyer beware. If you're going to this hotel call ahead of time to make sure the room is ready for guests. We have no complaints about the cleanliness of the room we received, it was a very nice room, just not the one we wanted!
Very nice motel. Rooms are spacious, large TV and comfortable bed. The motel was extremely clean and modern furnishings. Staff were very friendly and accommodating. We would definitely stay here again.
We stayed here for four nights in the busy summer season while exploring the Black Hills and we really liked our large, clean suite that included two comfortable queen beds, large spotless bathroom with a double vanity, a small well equipped kitchen area, and a separate sitting area for relaxing. The hotel also offers many amenities including a complimentary breakfast, fitness room, both an indoor and outdoor pool, laundry, business center, and an outside picnic area. Despite all the positives, the breakfast area was a little small to accommodate all the guests during the busy summer season and the staff had trouble in keeping the items stocked. We also found the in-room Wi-Fi to be unreliable during our entire stay which may have also been related to the very high occupancy.
Clean comfortable well appointed hotel room. With the microwave sink and refrigerator. Two flatscreen TVs a fold out couch and two queen size beds, and I was just traveling alone. That helped was friendly and helpful, the buffet breakfast included sausage and biscuits, ham, sausage patties, scrambled eggs, home fries, three kinds of cereal,Coffee milk and juice, yogurt and fresh fruit. Pastries and English muffins. Fresh and hot every day. The swimming pool indoors was clean and beautiful and relaxing. I've visited in mid October and was told by the front desk as I was checking out that they were closing up for the season October 28 so I'll see you in the spring.
Hill City was the second stop in my trip through South Dakota! I arrived right at check-in time and the desk staff could not have been nicer and more accommodating. The hotel was easy to find and centrally located to Mount Rushmore, Custer State Park, and many other popular spots! The rooms were great and I wish I would have stayed here multiple nights. Will definitely stay here again next time through the Black Hills!!
We were very satisfied with this hotel it was very quiet the room was comfortable The breakfast as usual in the Best Western is very good. The bed was comfortable and the room was very clean. It appeared that the room was recently updated as it still smelled brand new.
Great accommodations and location. Staff was friendly, helpful, and inviting. Upon check-in the front desk attendant offered several places to dine upon our request. The one we selected was outstanding.
When I booked the Black Hills “Luxury” Suites online (next door to and run by Best Western Golden Spike), I thought “How bad can something with luxury in the name be?” I didn't expect wonders, but as soon as we checked for a five day stay my only thought was, “Get me out of here.” First, the apartment section of the hotel requires a short drive, a driveway away. You can access the main building by a sidewalk in the back for breakfast/pools etc. (Side note: we tried the breakfast, it was okay. The man keeping things restocked was working very hard to keep up. The eggs were inedible, but the sausage, gravy, biscuit combo was okay. Second side note: we did not stay long enough to even look at the indoor pool). Back to the apartment: at first glance it didn't look too bad. The kitchen was fairly recently renovated with wood floors and nice cupboards. But, the fridge had mold on the liner outside the freezer, the sink had dirt or rust rings around the drains (and this is the only dish washing option in the apartment, no dishwasher), and there were some coffee grounds in the cupboard—also, the trash can lid was broken. Not huge issues; the bathroom was similarly updated, fairly clean (except for around the edges). In the living room area, the carpets were stained—in some places, badly (red paint?). The couches were filthy, with splotches of substances that looked like they could be cleaned off if some effort were given. They also sank very low to the ground when you sat on them. We realized, when we pulled out the sleepers inside, this was due to the majority of the mattress springs either broken or missing. The mattress was extremely thin and had holes and black stains on the edges—I thought mold, my husband thought dirt (maybe grease stains from springs that no longer exist?) Oh, and one of the mattresses still had a sheet-like cover on it; there was hair on the sheet. Not ours. Under this couch were several orange caps; I thought they might be from needles, but my husband said they were too short (still he collected them with a paper towel). There were also various wrappers and dirt below the couch; not an ideal situation for our boys to sleep. In the bedroom where our girls were sleeping, they had to kill a spider in their bed before crawling in themselves. In the other bedroom, the white pillowcase on my side was covered with a wad of hair—not just one stray strand. The carpet was dusty and dirty along all the baseboards, there was construction debris outside the window, the interior windows were not locked on the inside and when we tried to lock them found this difficult. As we were in a lower level apartment, the safety felt non-existent. My husband slept with a weapon nearby. Why did we stay? Well, we'd been on the road for 12 hours, we were exhausted, it was dark, and we had zero mobile data (the hotel does have wifi). We felt like we were trapped in this arrangement. Oh, I nearly forgot—the wall air-conditioning unit in the living room was full of dirt. The smell it emitted was awful, but someone had thought ahead on this and fastened a pine tree car air freshener to the front of the unit (so old that it was stuck to it). Our boys have mild asthma and the idea of them breathing this nasty air nearly sent us to the van to sleep (certainly couldn't open the windows in this deep set, shadowy apartment setting). The next morning, by 8 we were out of there. My husband noticed that the guy making coffee in the Golden Spike coffee shop, abruptly shut it down and went to clean rooms. Apparently they are understaffed. We have pictures and plan to contact Best Western corporate; it was nauseating and unacceptable. I'm so thankful that we found a lovely cabin just up the road in which to spend the remainder of our vacation in Hill City. I'm a researcher when it comes to accommodations—it takes me hours of review and pictures to trust a place. I wasn't thrilled with the Black Hills Best Western ahead of time, but the ability to cook in our own kitchen swayed me. Ugh. Please, just avoid this place if you have a family. It didn't feel clean, it didn't feel safe, and we wouldn't ever recommend it to anyone.
Clean, large rooms with very comfortable beds. Typical hot continental breakfast. Unique clothing and jewelry shop. Furnished cleaning rags for our bicycles right outside the front door. Easy access. Very enjoyable stay.
Great place to stay. Very comfortable beds, large room, good breakfast and central to all the local monuments and sites. Nice and quiet. Had a great snack bar with coffee and goodies. Would recommend without hesitation.
My wife and I stayed the night last month when we were in the Black Hills/Mt. Rushmore area. Room was very clean, fresh linens and towels, and good Wi-Fi connection. Breakfast buffet in the morning was outstanding.
Wonderful 3 day stay. Rooms were always kept very clean. The cleaning staff did a wonderful job. The front desk staff was very friendly and helpful at all times. The morning breakfast was excellant!!! Hot and fresh, and the breakfast staff was very pleasant. Would definitely stay here again. Highly recommend this Best Western.
Pools were great. Stayed during the "last weekend" of the high season and the place was nearly full. Restaurant and Grocery store on either side of inn. Upscale facilities. Pie, Coffee and ice cream sold in the lobby. I would return again.
Call luxury suits, far from luxury, but a great place for the price. The pool wasn't attached to the building which was unfortunate with two small children in 30 degree weather. Breakfast buffet was pretty good
Excellent hotel and great value. Close to Mt. Rushmore and the Black Hills. Can walk to town where there are many shops and restaurants from the hotel. Would definitely seek out this hotel if in the area again.
Only stayed one night because oncoming storm chased us out. We booked two nights but had to cancel one night. Had no problem canceling our second night. Hotel was very nice and would like to return. Good location for Mt Rushmore and Crazy horse monuments.
Spent 4 days here -- good headquarters for Black Hills touring. Nice hotel a professional staff. It is a great spot to catch the 1880 Steam Train to Keystone. It's also near Mt. Rushmore and the Crazy Horse Monument.
It began already with a very friendly and most professional receptionist (originally from Mexico). His help was just excellent Our keys didn't work so he came personally after reinstall and checked if now they work. The room just great, we really loved it Also the other morning , an other receptionist gave us wonderful tips where to go and what to see
We planned one night in Hill City and chose this property based on price. We got a great rate and were very pleasantly surprised when we arrived to check in! A pretty lobby with a bakery and clothing shop! Plus a very congenial, service oriented person at the front desk. Our rooms were clean and comfortable - we will certainly recommend this property to our family and friends.
I stayed for one night. My room overlooked a trailer park. It was clean without any frills. Breakfast was standard Best Western fare. The king bedded room cost $107 with a AAA discount. I believe hi got what I paid for.
Everything about the hotel was great. The breakfast was one of the best complimentary.breakfasts that I have ever seen at a hotel. The location is close to Hill City and other area attractions. Overall a good choice if you are traveling in South Dakota.
We enjoyed our stay at the Golden Spike BW in Hill City. It was easy to get to the various landmarks like Mt. Rushmore and Crazy Horse. We always stay at pet friendly hotels with our small service dog and really liked the grassy area and available poop bags for her. The staff was very friendly and helpful.
This place is very pleasant to stay at. The location ins IDEAL to visit the parks and sites for any tourists/visitors looking to enjoy and discover South Dakota's Black Hills, and the staff are very accommodating. They never said NO and looked for ways to be able to say YES. The following staff members are AMAZING. Caring, Hospitable, and sincere in their care in providing EXCELLENT CUSTOMER SERVICE: Remy Jeff Ramil Alan David Arthur (evening) Yader (Bed/Room service) These guys is the main REASON why would recommend and look forward to staying at this hotel. Thanks guys again. I will be writing a GREAT review on Yelp and Trip Advisor also.
Hotel was clean. Room was very large with 2 queen beds and 2 tvs. There was a separate seating area with a tv, microwave, fridge and sink. I was traveling with someone who stayed up later than me, so it was nice that they could shut the doors separating the room and not disturb me when I went to bed. Complimentary breakfast was fresh with a lot of selections. The dining area was very large. You can purchase hand dipped ice cream, coffee or pastry in the lobby if you like. Good location.
My husband and I were on a road trip and just happened to stop in Hill City late in the evening and decided to spend the night. The hotel had a couple of rooms available we chose the king suite and we were not disappointed. The room was spacious and incredibly clean. The bed was comfortable and there was no real noise from the street or other rooms. The staff here is friendly and helpful.
We spent three nights at Best Western and used it as a home base to visit all of the sights in the South Dakota region. Our room was comfortable and clean when we checked in. The fridge and microwave in our room worked so well. They also have a washer and dryer on sight for your use for a small fee. There are so many great restaurants to visit in the area. You can start your day with a wonderful FREE breakfast, fill up your coffee mugs and hit the road. It was so nice to come back to our room that was clean and fresh each evening. The most important thing for us is that they welcome dogs. They have a great pet area and we spent some time just sitting outside under the gazebo in the fresh air. I would recommend this as a place for your trip to this area.
We haven't been here for a couple of years, so we were surprised to find new buildings where the old ones used to be. The hotel is very nice, with a wonderful women's clothing/accessory store just iff the lobby. The bonus of staying this time of year is that almost all items are marked down 50%.
Very nice hotel with great staff. Our room was clean, nicely decorated and comfortable. We brought our dog with us and stayed in a pet friendly room. The hotel is in a great location with attractions close by. The staff were friendly and helped us with a map and directions. We easily travelled to Mount Rushmore, Custer State Park and 1880's Steam Train which were all short distances. We really enjoyed our stay here in Hill City and would stay here again.
Has a one night stay here & pleasantly surprised by our upgraded suite room. Very clean!! Plenty of room for two people that were just passing through and seeing the sights. Hotel host was very informative and knowledgeable of the area. Great recommendations for restaurants in the area. I would definitely stay here again.
Stayed here after visiting crazy horse memorial (don't do it!). The room was large and clean. The breakfast was fine. Strange that house keeping came knocking on the door at 8:30am. I was in the bathroom and didn't respond because I couldn't believe someone was knocking on my door. Then they entered. My son was asleep so I was panicked that he would be woken.
Room was clean, quiet, and bed was very comfortable. Staff was helpful and pleasant. Location was great. Breakfast had a wide selection of both cold and warm food. Lobby was very appealing and had room to relax in and provided free coffee.
This hotel was AWESOME! Great rate, Fantastic room, Superb staff... I could on and on. The room was great; clean, modern, roomy, comfy bed and tons of in-room amenities. The staff was professional and friendly. The breakfast was really good. We ate there for four days and it changed every day, but maintained high quality, tasty food. The Pools and hot tub were nice. Finally, the little coffee stand in the lobby was really great. Cheap Ice Cream and delicious snacks. Also, if you notice in my photos, the bathroom is equipped with quite a few rails for assistance and a seat in the shower. On our floor, some of the rooms had a "doorbell" for the hearing impaired! A light would alert them to someone at their door. I am glad to see that BW thinks of everyone. Thanks, Best Western! Keep up the great work!
The hotel is newly remodeled and in very nice shape. The room was good sized and mostly clean, though there was hair on the bathroom floor when we got there. We're not sure what was up with the bed, but it had some sort of mattress topper that made it way too soft and uncomfortable; there was no support, though six pillows of different firmness were nice. Breakfast was fairly good, but there wasn't much variety from day to day. They served eggs and sausage two days in a row, and biscuits/gravy and the same type of fried potatoes every day. A little more variety in the hot options would have been good. The coffee, however, was THE BEST hotel coffee I've ever had! It was smooth and delicious! We were booked for four nights over a long weekend, and had to leave a night early. We asked at the front desk at 2 p.m. and were told we had to call the company through which we booked; also told they were sticklers and wouldn't let people cancel, though that's not what we found out. We called the booking company, and they called the front desk, only to be told we couldn't cancel because it was after checkout time. While we understand checkout was at 11 a.m., it wasn't like we were trying to leave at midnight and get refunded for a night. We were in the room only three hours past checkout. We were extremely disappointed to learn we were wasting more than $100 on a hotel room that we couldn't stay in. Disappointing experience and even more disappointed that management wouldn't refund a room that they surely could have rebooked quickly. As a rewards member, I expect much more from a national hotel chain. We will not be staying here again.
This was our first stay back at a BW in a long time and we were pleasantly surprised. We got the last room which was a handicapped room and it was actually a suite. It had a sink both inside and outside of the bathroom which was really nice. The room was quiet, the bed was great. Altho we didn't care much for the breakfast, we appreciated that it opened at 6:30 am on the weekends. They also have a coffee shop with pastries for sale right in the lobby. They even had squeegees and buckets of water set out by the parking lot for customers to wash the bugs off their windshields, a really nice touch. Location was good, close to main street. Would definately stay here again.
A little outdated. Looks better in the website photos than what it really is. Tried to charge me a different price than what I booked at. They did adjust it after I refused to pay the higher rate. Uncomfortable bed. Tub slow to drain. You stood in water the whole time you showered.
Very unhappy with foul smelling room at The Best Western Golden Spike in Hill City. Seems it was centered on the bed and the sheets this was a very busy BW. But there is no excuse for this. We cancelled our remaining stay and are reconsidering Best Western as our go-to hotel. Now finding Hampton Inn to be better and much more consistent than BW.
We had the suite with 3 beds. This was great for traveling with our adult daughter. The room was very clean and quiet. The hotel was in a very nice location to visit all of the hot tourist spots. The guys at the front desk were very helpful and personable. The breakfast was typical motel fare but they did have nice seating, including booths.
This place was very crowded and busy. It is an ideal location from historic sites to see and the shops on the main street are charming. The people in town are friendly and tourism is their main economy.
This hotel was excellent. The price was great for a king size bed . The hotel did seem very full very busy but it was very clean and updated .the staff was friendly and helpful it had great amenities. we were happy to stay in that area rather than closer to Mt Rushmore because it seemed not so wild and crazy and more family friendly.
This is a nice hotel, big rooms, clean, well maintained. A really good point in our opinion is that it is 1 km out of the city center, this mean that, even during the Sturgis yearly rally, this is a quite place where to have good relax and sleep. You have free wi-fi, indoor and outdoor pool, a gym, complementary breakfast (average quality). Nice place where to stay in Hill City.
This is a very nice hotel and I would stay again. Room was nice and spacious and very clean. Breakfast was a pretty typical hotel fare with watery scrambled eggs. Hotel restaurant was closed, so had to search for a place to go for lunch and dinner. Hard to find a good restaurant in town that had good food that was reasonably priced. The bed was very comfortable and they offered a variety of pillows to suit your taste. My only complaint was there was this humming noise that was fairly loud outside our window. Not sure what was causing it. If you stay, request a room that's not on the east side of the property.
Great Hotel with Rustic Decor - Great Coffee bar and breakfast Restaurant - Room was large and very comfortable and internet was great. Location was just off main drag which made for getting in and out easy
This hotel is quiet and roomy. No views to speak of, quite the contrary--our room (on the back side) looked out upon a very messy neighborhood. The downtown area of Hill City (10 minute walk, couple of minute's drive) is interesting, with quite a few dining and shopping options. But we stayed here for convenient access to the Black Hills, not for Hill City, and found the hotel to be quite satisfactory. Breakfast comes with the room, breakfast which I'd liken to continental on steroids. It's okay. And there's ice cream available in the lobby (for $), and some shopping options. I don't think it's where I'd go to shop, but I didn't browse--there might be some surprises. The staff was very friendly and helpful as we put final plans on our excursion into the Black Hills. I'd definitely stay here again.
Very nice family place to stay, indoor and outdoor pool with hot tub. Clean! Rooms were nice and clean no need to worry, place was in a safe area. Everything was clean and organized. Utilized the patio every night we were there. Staff was friendly and knowledgeable. High recommend!
This is a great hotel centrally located in the Black Hills. The staff is great and friendly. The room was very clean. In the mornings, they serve a pretty good breakfast. My son enjoyed both pools and we all enjoyed the hot tub. If we come back to the Black Hills, we will be staying here again.
Our family of 4 stayed here for 3 nights and didn't have a problem at all. The room was very clean, they served a great breakfast, had an indoor and outdoor pool. The staff was very nice and helpful, we received a discount at the coffee bar that served ice cream!
We were very impressed with our room. It was very clean, which I appreciated because I am always worried about germs. The beds were very comfortable and the air conditioning unit was quiet and kept the room at the desired temperature. The staff was very friendly, everyone said hello, even the janitor we shared the elevator with engaged in a pleasant conversation. The breakfast was excellent! They had a variety of hot food such as sausage, hash browns, eggs in addition to the typical toast, cereal, juice, milk, and coffee. If we get to take another trip to Hill City, we look forward to staying at the Golden Spike again.
This is a great hotel newly renovated. The pool area is really busy with no adult hours so don't get your hopes up for swimming and hot tub time. It says there is a restaurant in the hotel and there wasent one. They do have a small coffee shop in the lobby with pie, ice cream and and a few other things. That was awesome and great staff.the beds and breakfast were amazing. Over all this is a Nice hotel to stay at with good price
This would be my second visit to the Hill City area and 3rd visit to the Black Hills. Beautiful area, great hiking, site seeing, touristy stuff. It's a nice mix. Very relaxing, nice people. Driving up to the hotel it looks great. Plenty of parking, nice look. Walking into the hotel it seems nice, a small cafe that serves coffee, espresso, etc...and deserts, including ice cream, nice! Lobby looks good, a small store with very minimal supplies. No worry though because a grocery store is basically right next door. Nice seating area in the lobby. A pretty decent sized clothing store, not sure why. Didn't see anybody buying anything there, but whatever. Also the free breakfast buffet is located off the lobby. The buffet is better than average but has terrible flow. Laid out poorly. Lots of bumping into people and having to cut in front of people to get to things. Lines to get just about everything. All that said, it was good. We sat outside each morning on the deck and ate. Very nice. Meeting the person at the front desk we were greeted kindly but would say the person helping us seemed to be going through the motions. They were not mean but not welcoming. Could not wait for us to leave the counter. We proceeded to our room. Basic 2 queen room, a couple of chairs, lamps, square table, dresser, flat panel TV, microwave, coffee maker, fridge, ice bucket, vanity separated from the bathroom. So out in the main living space. Shower with curved shower rod, and toilet. Good water pressure a pet peeve of mine, and plenty of hot water. Very basic. Actually I read that this place was just upgraded, if it was it really didn't seem like it. I mean it was very typical but not overly nice. Was fine for us with the kids. The hotel has an indoor pool, a smaller outdoor pool (nice to have one regardless), and maybe the smallest indoor hot tub I've ever seen in a hotel that was not in a private room. Maybe seats 6??? All that said, the pool area and hotel was clean and decent but not overly nice. I would stay again though. The beds were strangely soft in the middle while kind of hard on the sides but they were comfortable. Pillows, OK. They did provide shampoo, soap, and conditioner but no lotion so keep that in mind if you use that. After being there a day we requested to change rooms because we were right by the elevator. They couldn't or wouldn't change our room. Actually it ended up not being a big deal as the hotel and the whole town is pretty much quiet after 10 pm. Speaking of that if you stay in Hill City and want some food after 9 pm you might be out of luck as everything basically closes down at 9 pm. So if you're traveling from a day of site seeing I'd eat on my way back to the hotel. The location for the hotel is great. Right on the main strip when entering the town. Close to Mt. Rushmore, Custer state park, Needles highway, Keystone, Custer, Bear Country USA, a few breweries and wineries. If you're looking to go to Deadwood or Sturgis that is about an hour drive. Still not bad but the rest I listed are about 20-30 min drive. While the location is very good the hotel is very typical. While I would stay here again, I guess next time I go I would check out the Holiday Inn Express which is nearby but for the price this is a decent place to stay.
The hotel is decent but I was bothered by a few things. The first is that the building did not have locking exterior doors. Second the food wasn't very good or appetizing. The bed was like a trampoline.
Double queen bed. Wonderful room and breakfast. Easy to get to attractions. Very helpful staff and comfortable rooms. Coffee was especially great flavor. Could eat out on patio. Nice and quiet. Good exercise equipment.
Was given a room somebody already in and walked in on them then the next day got called by hotel demanding return from Mt Rushmore by 1:00 PM to move us to a different room . Won't stay there again but I will say they had a good breakfast included with you stay
Stayed 3 nights at the luxury suite side of the motel since it had 2 bedrooms and a kitchen. The grandkids loved the pool area and breakfast was exceptional. Close to My. Rushmore and Custer St. Park. Grocery store about a block away. Would stay here again if I was in the area.
The location is close to nearby attractions it is managed well and is clean and inviting for us guest. The breakfast was served on time it was of good quality served hot and fresh. The AC in the room did not cool properly is the only negative with this stay.
We stayed here one night to be able to visit the crazy horse monument and Mount Rushmore and it is centrally located for both and Custer Park. Big indoor pool, small outdoor pool. The security switches for the building was only a hole in the wall with wires in it. Breakfast was good, standard plus fare, but the area to eat was small and overflow into the lobby was noted. Ample restaurants were within walking distance (less than 3/4 mile) on site restaurant was not enticing to us. Internet needed a bit of tweaking to work on Apple IOS products. Needed to reboot my phone and iPad to finally connect, an irritant, but minor.
The bed was very comfortable. The linens and pillows were fresh smelling and of quality fabric. All good, so far. The TV did not swivel toward the "teen sized" club chair. So, had to lie on bed to watch. We booked here because of on-sight restaurant...it was not open due to "staffing issues". There is a well stocked ice cream/pastry/confection area in the main lobby, where kids of all ages seemed to flock around. The breakfast was superior. Tip: Be sure to check for shower grout mold. D
A perfect location for visiting the Black Hills and Mt. Rushmore. I booked the BW based on having an outdoor pool - I just didn't realize how SMALL it was (although the indoor pool is really first rate). They have a nice breakfast buffet but it was really crowded. The biggest problem was the poor housekeeping. We were there 4 days and only had the room vacuumed once. Not a deal breaker but they could do much better.
We came to ride the 1880 train as part of a bit of exploring the Black Hills. The property is big, but the cleanliness and service were fine. The crowds at the breakfast room made the free meal unpleasant. It seemed odd that the onsite restaurant was closed. We had the feeling that there's a shortage of restaurant and hotel workers in the area. The indoor pool was wonderful -- the outdoor pool looked good, but the weather was overcast so we didn't use it. The day we left the prices jacked up very high; I'm glad we stayed before the summer season started. We saw more folks in wheelchairs than at any other hotel we visited in a 3 1/2 week trip. (That is a thumb's up to the hotel in my opinion.)
Our stay was very enjoyable! We originally booked 5 nights and stayed an additional 6th night! Well run establishment and staff receptive to the few glitches we experienced. We requested a handicapped, double queen suite. This was the PERFECT accommodation for our needs. There were two separate bath sink and counter areas. Great for getting ready in AM. The tub had plenty of grab bars and a flip down seat to assist in bathing. There was a separate kitchenette room with a 3rd sink, microwave, fridge, table & chairs, sofa and TV. Plenty of closet room for the extended stay. All the Suite Rooms are located across the parking lot from the main check-in building where the breakfasts are served. Too far for me to walk each morning. So we had to move the car from our suite building to the breakfast area building each morning. The main problem we encountered was their lack of sufficient Handicapped Parking Spaces and inconsiderate people using the Handicapped Spaces without proper plates, cards or stickers. Also people parked across the crosswalks in access areas to the entrances, making it even more difficult to get in and out of the buildings with a walker. We notified the front desk of the problem and the gentleman immediately came out with us and got the liscence plates of the offenders and had them move their cars. After that it was much easier to find Handicapped Spaces. I don't know if they had someone monitoring the situation or what, but it definitely made for a much more comfortable and enjoyable stay! The breakfast area was crowded early, because everyone wants to get up & out on their excursions ASAP. Would help if breakfast could start at 6AM instead of 6:30AM, in view of the fact that people are standing in line waiting for it to open. The personnel monitoring the breakfast area and refilling the stations are awesome. Very efficient and courteous! The front desk personnel are also very receptive to special needs. One hot day the electricity went out and I called to enquire about the problem. They were working on it and after about 45 minutes it went back on. Shortly after, we received a front desk call to make sure it was back on in our room and if everything was ok. GREAT SERVICE. Our daughters enjoyed the pool area, clean and well maintained. We hope to be able to return!
This location is very convenient to many of the things we wanted to see in South Dakota. Check in was easy - and we changed our reservation (as we changed our plans) and we left a day early which was no problem. The room was a bit outdated in furniture/style and the tub was a bit older as well but everything worked well. A couple minor complaints - the beds were a little soft for our liking - probably could have been replaced. There really isn't a "restaurant" on site. It's a buffet for breakfast (which was excellent) and like a little coffee/dessert/ice cream bar but not a true restaurant. The indoor pool was WAY over chlorinated - we didn't even use it but the outdoor pool was very nice.
Located in quaint Hill City convenient to Mt Rushmore activities. Swimming pools are well maintained and the rooms are nice. we would stay there again. Good layout for family groups with plenty of parking.
Very clean and updated room. Quiet air conditioner, nice different flow shower head. Breakfast was good. Nice indoor and outdoor pools. Would recommend this motel and would stay again if we return to the area. Close to the shopping area and resturants
The Best Western Golden Spike was our base of operation during our trip to the Black Hills to celebrate our grandson's high school graduation. I wanted suite-type accommodations to assure we all had a bit of privacy for our three nights here and the Best Western, with its excellent location right in the heart of the Black Hills, was our best choice. This motel was undergoing major remodeling while we were there but management and housekeeping still managed to keep all areas clean - probably not easy. Breakfast was delicious and varied from day to day, important for those staying more than one night. The ONLY draw back here was the property was three separate buildings. During the winter or inclement weather, walking across the parking lot might be an issue. We had just a light rain one morning so it wasn't too much of a burden for us. If in the area in the future, I would definitely stay here again.
Our family loved the two nights we stayed here on our western tip. We got the family suite and loved how nice and spacious it was. The location is perfect if you are spending a couple days in the Black Hills. The staff was very friendly as well. They served a great hot breakfast too which was exactly what we needed to fuel up for the long days of seeing sites. The only negative we experienced was the hot tub looked like it could use a shock treatment. The water was a bit nasty...likely from the all day usage. Overall, we had a fantastic stay and would come back again if in the area.
I picked this hotel because of the location and because they have one huge room- 3 queen beds- that worked well for my family. People are very friendly and the rooms seemed to have just be updated. We would have liked to have eaten at the restaurant as we were tired when we arrived but the manager told us it was closed as they couldn't get enough people to work it.
My wife & I are just completing our stay at the Golden Spike and have found this to be a great place. The front desk was very cordial & efficient. We are enjoying a beautiful, clean room with a new (?) bed. The included breakfast was far better than most - even better than our usual Hampden Inn breakfasts. We didn't try the pool, but it looked very clean. Furthermore this stays open all year and most close after the summer ends. We will definitely return!
My family had a good stay here. Nothing spectacular, but a nice place and clean rooms. The indoor and outdoor pool were good for the kids. My only criticism would be how loud the in room air conditioner was.
This is a good place to stay for visiting Mount Rushmore, and the Badlands, also there is a steam railway with rides to nearby Keystone. Our room was large clean and in the main building and had recently been refurbished. Only criticism of the room was there was a large space and no comfortable chair, after complaining about this one appeared. We chose this hotel as it advertised a restaurant but when we checked in they said it had been closed since January 2018! So we had to go into the town to eat and the weather was wet one evening, it would have been nice to eat in.
Great location, close to Mt Rushmore and Crazy Horse as well as Custer State Park. Clean, friendly, comfortable beds and pillows, roomy bathroom. Little living room area in the family suite. They offered an included continental breakfast, which was very good as well. We would highly recommend this hotel.
We stayed at the Best Western Golden Spike Inn last week for five nights. We arrived to find that the BW had completed an addition to the facility...adding many more rooms. Our pet-friendly room had received new carpet, a fresh coat of paint, and new beds...that were very comfortable. I've left positive reviews of the BW Golden Spike before. As on other visits at the BW Golden Spike, we found the staff to be friendly and helpful. I recommend this motel to my friends and family that visit the Black Hills. Its Hill City central location is convenient for visiting all the attractions the Black Hills has to offer. If I had to find a criticism it's that the morning breakfast gets a little monotonous if you stay more than a couple of days. We will continue to stay at the Golden Spike during future trips to the Hills.
We stayed here for 3 nights. We were traveling with a big group and found this hotel to be wonderful. Al at the front desk couldn't of been more helpful!! The room was very nice and the beds were very comfortable. The breakfast in the morning was great! Everything was very nice and clean!! Enjoyed the indoor and outdoor pool.
This hotel is located near Deadwood and Keystone. If you enjoy casinos and very touristy establishments, this is definitely a good place. The hotel is nicely furnished (even includes a gift shop in the breakfast area!), lots of choices for the free breakfast buffet. There are several restaurant choices within a short distance from the hotel. The hotel is in a busy area of other hotels, etc. Rooms are clean, comfortable, and provide good sleep.
Nice hotel with clean rooms and decent swimming pools. Good breakfast in the morning. The best part is the location. Close to all major attractions, but not in the heart of the busy-ness. Nicely maintained and large hotel.
The hotel is currently being refurbished; but I was not bothered by it at all. The room was fine, the equipment worked well. The only thing that did bother me was the fact that my room was right next to the swimming pool and the walls of the room were very thin. You could hear every word that was spoken in the hallway, not to mention the barking dog next door. Breakfast was alright, the typical choices of a Best Western. During my stay it was constantly raining so it would have been nice to have some sort of doormat upon entering the building of our rooms as it can get quite slippery.
Typical BW with comfortable bedding, guest laundry, indoor pool, and complimentary breakfast. A bonus of car and windshield cleaning supplies were available for the general public to use. Good breakfast options.
Good hotel unforunfortunately during our stay lots of work going on. Room next to us had a dog or dogs. Barking woke us at about 6:40 and continued. Barking also during evening when we left our room. Needed to ask server for napkins and peanut butter as not available at 8:30 during breakfast, provided quickly. Good hotel within easy reach of attractions. Room was not serviced on the first day of our stay. Don't mind but some might.
This hotel has the potential to be very good but at the moment there is so much work going on, the restaurant was out of use and there was building going on. We were comfortable enough because it was quiet at night and we were out during the day.
Best Western Golden Spike Inn & Suites Hill City, North Dakota 578328062 We stayed in a lovely suite - 2 TV's, kitchen area, two queen beds and a pullout sofa in a separate seating area. This suite would be great for a family. We were there 4 days after they had opened, and the gift shop, coffee shop and restaurant were not open yet. Apparently the season really starts at Memorial Day, so a May trip is iffy. We had a hot breakfast every day - eggs, sausage, fruit, yogurt, waffles, pastries, etc. The menu did not change. The location was good for Mt. Rushmore, Custer State Park and Crazy Horse. On our 4th night we received a phone call telling us we needed to move to a different building due to a sewer problem. We got out of bed, got dressed, packed our things and moved to a double room. Our compensation for the problem was a 50% reduction on the room rate for that night. The staff was very friendly and helpful. It wasn't their fault that things weren't open etc.
We stayed one night in late April (before summer crowds) and enjoyed the stay very much. The staff was very friendly and helpful. The room was very clean and well maintained. The breakfast was much better than usual, good selection and all food was very tasty.
What a fantastic restaurant. We were actually book elsewhere, but found this great place to eat while staying in the area. You won't be disappointed at all! Very accommodating, very well prepared. We enjoyed every bite. The facility was in top shape, we would have stayed here had we known about it, but even if you do not, go eat there. Reasonable, good, and plenty on the plate.
We found this hotel be reasonably priced, perfect location, very clean and comfortable. The staff is friendly and helpful. We stayed in a suite and found it to be a little on the small size but very comfortable and we in fact hosted game night in our room with a couple other families that were staying here also but our room was the largest. The pool area is good ice and very clean. The breakfast included a good variety of choices to please some picky members in our party.
My husband and I stayed here for 4 nights as a base for visiting the Black Hills and really enjoyed our stay. We had a large room whose back door opened out to the parking lot. At first I thought it would be too noisy, but that was not the case at all. It was really convenient for loading and unloading. Our room was comfortable and clean. The staff we encountered were all nice and friendly. The included breakfast was a great value with plenty on offer to start the day. We did not dine in the restaurant, but did order pizza one night to our room and it arrived piping hot and it was really good. Wifi worked great. Mt. Rushmore, Crazy Horse and Custer State Park are just a short drive away. We would definitely recommend this hotel as a well-located and comfortable choice for visiting the Black Hills.
Stayed here for night on our cross country trip. The beds were not that comfortable. There was newer carpet on the floor, but I couldn't get over how dirty the walls were. The staff was friendly. The free breakfast had a decent variety and was good. Would I stay there again? Probably not.
The Golden Spike offered good access to The Black Hills and Mt Rushmore, was walking distance to Hill Coty reataurants, provided reasonable comfort and quiet, wifi and included breakfast. We also opted for Hill City because , while still on the tourist trail wasnt as frantic as some of the other proximate towns. In all respects the Golden Spike proved good value and did not disappoint.
Loved this hotel. I was upgraded to a the suite which was awesome. Very clean and comfortable. I chose Golden Spike for its Black Hills location; close to parks I wanted to visit. I would return in a minute just for their service and great rooms.
This Best Western Hotel was recommended to me by our friends, and we also checked Trip Advisor for the reviews. I called ahead and talked to David and felt welcome before we arrived ;) It was perfect from the time we entered til we left four days later. The location is great as a base to stay while visiting all around the area. We loved seeing deer in the grass under the hotel sign at nighttime. Our suite was attractively decorated, and very clean. The staff was friendly ( Lupe' and Vincent were two names I remember )from the desk to the coffee shop to the breakfast buffet gentleman to the cleaning staff. In addition, we enjoyed the large pool and hot tub and we used the guest laundry facilities. My husband liked the water, rags and squeegee outside in a bucket near the parking lot for use on windshields! Like I titled this review, “Perfect”.
all was good just a little upset about the extra 10 dollars for wednesday night the 11th. I wish the restaurant would have been open> I understand it is a seasonal motel.. Only 2 places to eat in town..
This is the best, best western hotel I have stayed in over the years. Every one working here will help in any way possible and you don't always have to ask. Acknowledge the rewards program the minute I started checking in. They have a nice restraunt and a coffee snack area that is great. Breakfast is good and served in the restraunt seating area. The upgrade room was as large as my home and just as nice. My wife loved the large double sink bath counter area for two people separate from tub shower and stool. It had a large living room with kitchen and bar counter. A computer area couch and chair with large screen TV. Bedroom had two very comfortable beds and a TV. Heating and AC were very quite. The hotel lobby also had a women's clothing section that my wife took advantage off. I highly recommend this Best Western Hotel.
Upon arrival we were greeted by David who upgraded our room to a suite. The room was very clean with plenty of linens. Each night deer grazed near the front of the property. We loved the fact that they provided towels and a squeegee so that we could clean our auto windows daily before leaving for sightseeing.
I came in to Hill City for a marathon and would stay here again should I come back to the area. Close enough to the center of town to walk, far enough to be away from noise and traffic during touristic season.
Arrived mid afternoon in the Black Hills so decided to check in early. The front desk gave us some great sightseeing tips for the remainder of the day. He also mentioned the cafe would be closing so we ordered take out to eat later on. The pizza was great!. The hotel is older but very well kept and clean. The bed and shower was great. Our 2 nights there was comfortable. Would stay again given the central location in the Hills.
This is the second time we stayed at this Best Western in Hill City, SD. The staff is very pleasant and helpful. Our room was a king room, and it was large and roomy and clean. The breakfast was very good, a variety of food too. Location of our room was just down the hall from the lobby and restaurant, it was very quiet.
Convenient location. Friendly staff. Decent rooms and price wasn't bad either. We ended up booking another night at the last minute. We would stay there again. The pillows were not very comfortable, but the beds weren't bad.
It was a nice hotel. We ate at their restaurant & had the prime rib special. It was ok. Dad ordered a mixed drink. The waitress gave him a funny look & shook her head. He then said, "how about a beer?" Again, she shook her head. So the restaurant apparently does not have a bar. Not a big deal...just say so instead of giving a strange look, maybe? Mom's salad had several rusty pieces. She told the waitress who gave her a rushed, insincere apology & turned around & was on her way & nothing more was done about this. Rooms were spacious, TV worked, shower was hot, rooms were clean & beds were comfy. Free breakfast was better than average. They had a "gift shop", not really a souvenir shop. It was a bunch of posh clothing & jewelry, not your typical souvenir gift shop. Staff were professional, mostly.
After an initial problem with our room which was sorted by the reception staff we enjoyed 3 days at this hotel. It is situated about 10 - 15 mins walk from the centre of Hill City and around 25 mins from Mt Rushmore. The rooms are spread over 3 blocks, they are large and clean. The free breakfast was filling and plentiful. Would recommend.
After touring Mount Rushmore and Crazy Horse monuments, we needed a nice place to stay. After reading reviews, we settled on the Golden Spike Inn. The staff is very friendly. The lobby has a small souvenir shop and an adjacent restaurant which has good food. In the morning, they serve breakfast as part of the lodging. The rooms are clean and quiet. The hotel has a small workout room with treadmills next to the swimming pool which is large compared to other pools at hotels. A nice feature is that the hotel offers towels, a bucket of water, and a brush to clean the car. After driving through the hills, across Montana, Wyoming, and Utah, the car needed a rinse. The hotel is within walking distance to the South Dakota Railroad Museum which has a museum with a large HO layout. The museum has a two hour, 20 mile round trip steam engine ride to Keystone.
The family suite room was extremely large and comfortable. It was better than we expected. I would definitely recommend it for groups with 4 or more guests. A separate bedroom (with a king bed) and 2 queen beds and a sleeper sofa in the main room left us plenty of room to spread out comfortably.
Everything at this hotel provided enough room—roomy accommodations, no problem getting a table at breakfast or a chair by the pool, and able to park pretty near our room. It was a good location for touring the Black Hills. We spent 5 nights here in June and splurged on a 1 bedroom suite. We enjoyed the large living room/kitchen area (even though we only used the refrigerator) and decent-sized bedroom. There were louvered folding doors separating the bedroom from the living room. A solid door would have blocked light and sound from the living room better for times when one of us stays up later or gets up earlier than the other. The breakfast was fine, well stocked and 2 waffle makers so not a long wait for one. There is an indoor pool and hot tub and an outdoor pool. This hotel appears to be well-managed. When there was a lot of wind from an approaching storm, someone was out bringing in trash cans, etc. so that things would not blow around.
The location is convenient to all Black Hills activities. The staff is polite and friendly. It was hot when we were there and our air conditioning broke during our first night stay. We talked to the staff at the front desk the next morning and they said they would get maintenance to either fix it or replace it. By the time we returned to the hotel later that day the unit was replaced and the room was a pleasant temperature. Thank you! One night we ordered pizza from the Golden Spike restaurant. It was delicious! They delivered it to our room and we got a 10% discount. The breakfast was ok and the room had plenty of seating. We would stay here again.
This Best Western gets a top rating from us. They had a very competent staff - very friendly, accommodating and professional group! The rooms were very comfortable, spacious and clean, The restaurant food was very good. I would stay there again if I got the chance!
My family and I took a vacation to the Hill City/Keystone area and stayed at this hotel for a couple of nights. It is a good place to stay clean, the free breakfast was good. Our beds were smaller than what I expected we a room with 2 queen beds don't think they were queens though so should have booked a suite . There's 2 pools indoors and one outdoors that one was closed the indoor one looked pretty clean though.
We booked this hotel because of its location and AAA rating back in May. We were there this September. We booked a room with a king bed thinking it would be spacious, and asked to be on the top floor with a nice view if possible. When we arrived, we were given a small room in the main part of the hotel, on the first floor and with a lovely view of a trailer park. We were tired of traveling at that point and just wanted to unpack, get something to eat, and rest. We ate at the hotel the first night and never ate there again. There was no bar and no wine and beer as advertised in AAA. During our stay, we discovered there were suites available and much larger rooms available in another building, which we were never offered. There are only two other chain hotels that we saw in the town, but several lodges and cabins which looked quite nice. As for food, the restaurants downtown were crowded and disappointing. We found a nearby restaurant called Powder House Restaurant that was very good and ate there most nights. They also had cabins which looked very nice. I cannot recommend this Best Western hotel unless you don't mind bad food, no bar, and a small room.
We stayed at this hotel for Labor Day weekend. The location is very handy for seeing Mount Rushmore and Crazy Horse. The hotel was full, but parking was never an issue. The room was quiet and clean; however the sink/vanity space was quite small. The breakfast had a good variety of options including hot and cold food choices. Food was replenished quickly.
We stayed at the BW Golden Spike for 3 days. We got a nice Queen Suite that had ample room for an extended stay. The only negative thing about the room was the refrigerator froze everything so we had to make adjustments as the front desk didn't seem too concerned. We ate out most of the time so we made do. The restaurant served a nice breakfast and there was a souvenir shop right off the breakfast area that offered higher end clothing etc The indoor pool was not big but it was clean. I would stay here again.
This is an old style hotel and they don't have an elevator so we had to carry our heavy luggages through the stairs. Our room looked clean; but, was kind of smelly (perhaps because of its age) when we got in; however, the smell was gone once we turned on the heater. The bed was comfortable and we slept really good. Breakfast foods had a few choices and the staff were very friendly.
Great place to stay ! We rented a suite with two rooms between my youngest sister , her husband and my wife and I . The hotel is very close to either Crazy Horse and Mt. Rushmore . We would stay there again .
Walking distance from downtown & easy access to Michelson Trail. Pet friendly, nice amenities including great breakfast. All staff were courteous & professional. Enjoyed the patios & nicely maintained grounds.
Wonderful place to stay at a reasonable cost! This is the only place we will stay at while visiting the Mount Rushmore area and we have been here 3 times. This hotel is motorcycle friendly and the perfect Location!
This hotel was a good place to stay although it could do better on the dinner menu for the evening meal. My family and I left because of the lack of something we wanted to eat. Being familiar with the best western brand and not with other places in town is the main reason we stayed there.
Our room was incredibly quiet and the pillows and bed were very comfy. The staff was wonderful...from our check in to breakfast in the morning. The breakfast area is small, but they keep it restocked and it felt like we were eating a small cafe. Forced all of the guests to be friendly, or at least a little bit. My only complaint is that the soap in our room was absolutely horrible. Smelled like Lysol. Not exactly what I wanted to use on my face. Still, I would stay there again. Easy location to get to all of the sites in the Black Hills.
Excellent accommodations! First time we've stopped at BW but Best Western has now replaced Marriott and Holiday Inn as our favorite travel inn. They provided as much as our two favorites at a much more reasonable price. Rooms were spotless and completely up to date. Never a problem with WiFi, always a hot breakfast with a large selection.
Room was nice, clean and comfortable. Nice little resturant with free full breakfast on premesis. Lots of things to do and see in the area. The staff was very friendly and accomodating very helpful with local information. Close to Crazy Horse and Mt Rushmore.
The room and breakfast area were clean and comfortable. The bed was very comfy. The air conditioning was quiet. The bathroom looked like it had just been renovated. The location so close to Hill City for restaurants, and the monuments was perfect.
Very happy with this hotel choice. Appears to be out of the way but is still very close to the town of keystone and the many attractions in the area. Hotel had great rooms clean and well maintained. The outside of the hotel is very well maintained. We enjoyed the complimentary breakfast in the large separate building, plenty of room to enjoy your meal. Staff was very helpful. I would highly recommend this hotel.
Check your bed to make sure the sheets are clean! Also think twice about ordering a salad at the restaurant on site. Mine was full of lettuce that was long past it's prime. The service was decent and the people were nice, but the niceness of the exterior of the building didn't match up with what was in the rooms. The mattress that very uncomfortable and the sofa springs were totally shot.
Just out of the centre, so nice and quiet, and with a supermarket next door. Plenty of options at breakfast, but would have liked some gluten free choices, especially with the hot foods. The room was modern, clean and spacious. Staff very friendly at check in. Didn't use the pools, but the indoor one was very popular. Wouldn't bother with the outdoor one - it was tiny! All in all, one of the better mid range hotels we've stayed in in America.
Arrived to learn the suite we needed because we were travelling with our 16-year-old grandson was not available. Because my wife is a BW top tier member, they put us into another building with a room more like an apartment. There were two bedrooms and a combination living room/kitchenette. It was very nice and very quiet. Staff was very helpful. Only problem was one had to either go down or up a small flight of narrow stairs to reach the room depending on the level it was on, difficult for an old man with bad knees carrying a heavy suitcase, but we did it.
We very much enjoyed our stay at the Best Western Golden Spike in Hill City SD. Clean, comfortable room, friendly and helpful staff, well kept facility and grounds. Great breakfast, handy laundry, indoor and outdoor pools. Will stay there again!
Spent two nights. Check-in quick and easy, staff friendly and professional. Room was on first floor, so noise from upstairs (kids running around) a little annoying. The floor made noise when walked on, like it was made of plywood. Standard double room - two beds, lots of pillows, table w/2 chairs, dresser, flat screen TV, clothes closet, double sinks, bathroom with shower/tub combo and toilet. Single-cup drip coffee maker (not Keurig). Free breakfast had good variety, hot items (eggs, sausage, potatoes) and cold items, served only until 9 am (seems like the norm in this area). Laundry located on 1st floor behind office, with 2 washers and 2 dryers, laundry soap available at front desk. Convenient location, right on main highway, within walking distance of old town, train station, restaurants, etc.
We stayed at the Best Western in Hill City, SD for 6 nights. I was very pleased with our stay. One of the reasons I chose this hotel was that they allowed small pets of which we have two small dogs. With the worry of what to do with our pets out of the way, we were able to thoroughly enjoy our trip. The hotel had a very nice pool both inside and outside. The continental breakfast each day was a nice full offering and saved us from having to find a place to eat each morning. The pet walk area was well kept and inviting with nice green grass and doggie pick-up bags were provided. Someone must have put some effort into planning this. It made us feel like our pets were welcome. I have already recommended this hotel to my co-worker who would like to vacation next year.
We have stayed here a number of times and always enjoy our visit. The place was really hopping and we got one of the last rooms. It was very convenient to be able to walk right into our room from the parking lot with all of the bags etc. The room was clean and surprisingly quiet. The only complaint I might have was there was only one guy working around 3 in the afternoon and people had to wait for coffees and treats and to check in. why only 1 person? I saw more than one person leave because they had to wait. surely he had someone to call? but I waited quite some time for coffee and a cookie. ( should have passed on the cookie, it was very old and dry). as was the scone. :(
Rooms were clean. Pool a little small but clean. Restaurant staff extra helpful when meal was not quite right. Easy check in and checkout. Hill city is s little smaller and less busy. Overall good experience. Would stay here again.
Staff was extremely helpful accommodating my reservations. I had points for one night out of the two. I made two separate reservations on line. They reworked the reservations into one with the reduced pricing from the points to make the seamless. Appreciate the upgrade to the suite since I had my children with. Fantastic experience using the hotel as home base for our Black Hills vacation.
We stayed here to visit the area. It is older hotel , but was clean and a great local. The coffee in the lobby was one of the better coffee I have had at hotels. There is a Seattle best coffee bar in the lobby , if you are looking for more than just coffee. The breakfast is served in the room next to the restaurant . It was your standard breakfast, yogurt, fresh fruit ( apples, banana, and oranges) make your own waffles, oatmeal, scramble eggs, hard boiled eggs, dry cereals. There is a restaurant in the lobby, we ate dinner there and found it very good. The serves was good . If looking for a place to stay in the area, this would be on to consider.
In our 5 day trip we stayed in 3 places and this one was far and away the best. Probably worth splurging for the suite. really comfortable. excellent breakfast included (a little tight on the self serve area but a lot of room to sit). Better than average pool. Nicely placed between rapid city, deadwood, custer and everything you want to see.
After touring Mt. Rushmore and Bear Country USA in May with my husband, I decided to bring back our grand daughters and once again stay at the Golden Spike. The beginning, end and maybe even a middle of the day respite are as important as the tourist attractions! The pools (inside and out), hot tub, lounge area with tables and exercise room are huddled together, so it is easy for everyone to be in close proximity doing their own thing. And the breakfast has many lovely options!
Beautiful and extra comfy rooms, with all the necessary and even more. Great staff, special mention to Josie for helping us getting breakfast when we were late, and for making a special Italian cappuccino!
Hotel was a very good value for the money. Our two grandchildren especially enjoyed the indoor pool and hot tub after a day of sightseeing. Breakfast offered several options and was well presented. Location is excellent for seeing the sights in the Black Hills
We had a great time visiting in Hill City! Rooms were clean and comfy! The staff was very accommodating and friendly! Great location to visit surrounding area since it's centrally located! I would recommend staying here again!
my family and I were having a cross county trip. we had 12 nights at hotels across 7 states. this hotel was in a good location for viewing the sites in the Black hills and at a good price. we were able to travel to everything we wanted to see. the room was fine with laundry access was easy.
Location and food were great. The two women at the front desk are rude. The hotel has a great dog walk area. The pool was clean. The room was comfortable. Too bad the two front desk women are rude. The guy at night is outstanding!
Nice place clean everything worked as should. Rooms bigger than the usual. Good for families. I would go back again. Restaurant Dinner food was good, breakfast food was ok. Good central location for all the Black Hills attractions.
Nestled in Hill City, it is perfectly situated to see all the tourist attractions, go hiking and see Rapid City. The hotel is very well presented, the parking and facilities are very good and they have their own laundry! The restaurant was very good, with GlutenFree options and delicious deserts. Breakfast was very average and they need to offer healthier options and the Lobby is filled with clothes for sale which makes the Lobby look overly cluttered. But overall I highly recommend this hotel and I will definitely be coming back here in the future.
The staff is friendly. Hotel is nicely set away from Hill City, with a western atmosphere. Indoor and outdoor pools are nice, restaurant on-site is great and food was good. Hotel is family orientated. Would stay here again. Rates seem reasonable for this area.
We thought the hotel was very clean and the breakfast in the morning was great. The breakfast had lots of variety between hot and cold items and items you could take on the go. It as easy to find and on the main road to get to all of the attractions in the area. The cleaning crew was friendly and efficient. We would recommend this hotel to our friends and family. We enjoyed out stay and will use this Best Western again next time we are in the area.
Very easy check in. The room was clean with a lot of towels. Pools were excellent. Coffee house on the site was great because if you are used to getting Starbucks in IL, you will have fun trying to find coffee anywhere else after 5 pm in the Black Hills.
Whatever you do, don't expect a good breakfast. It was horrible. The "hot" breakfast they offered included dry, clumpy powdered eggs and NO meat (sausage or bacon). At every BW we've stayed at that offers a free hot breakfast (not continental), it always included meat. Also, if you plan on showering....hold on for dear life! There is no texture on the tub's floor, no tub mat, not even decals to prevents slippage. Almost broke my neck even being aware of the slipperiness. Had to call down to the front desk to have someone bring up a tv guide, as there was not one in the room. At least the remote was there. Lol.
Good location if going to Mt Rushmore. Staff is extremely helpful in giving advice about times, places and restaurants. Good laundry facilities. Excellent gift shop. Good parking and quiet. Nice layout on suite.
Loved the amenities and the room was very comfortable. Bath and body works shampoo and conditioner extra bonus. Pool area very nice. Enjoyed that there was one outdoors. Location fantastic. Staff very caring and helpful.
Great location to visit Crazy Horse, Mount Rushmore, the Badlands National Park and to see some gorgeous scenery, do some hiking and take pictures of lots of wildlife. Good restaurant with decent prices as there are not many places right there to go eat.
This was the most all inclusive Best Western my wife & We have stayed in. The evening menu and quality of the food was very good. I would have liked to had a menu with more choices. The menu for our grandchildren was very good.
Overpriced, Meager Breakfast. Decent rooms. Good Location. Should take into consideration the ability to accommodate guests on holidays. The room was nothing more than an average motel room. We waited 15 minutes for one woman to make three waffles. By then we had a measly yogurt, juice, and decided to go elsewhere.
Nice place to stay and good location for access to many of the local attractions. Great feature to have an outdoor and indoor pool. The indoor pool area is quite nice and large. The hotel has a nice feel, authentic to the area. Nice coffee shop and restaurant. I only wish the restaurant was open past 8:30, but that is true of many of the area's businesses. Price seems a little high for a standard 2 queen room, but is quite competitive, when considering the average room cost in this area and this quality of hotel.
They are friendly service. You can order pizza if you come in late. Send to your room before 10pm. And the breakfast is good too for beening free. The rooms are clean. It was really pretty outside. A nice hotel.
The only real complaint I have is that the bed was very hard and uncomfortable.. Also, one of the workers that stacked the breakfast food was not super friendly but they were very busy so he was maybe just stressed...There were also a few daddy long legs in our room but the room looked older and maybe that is the cause for the spiders....? Other than that, the value was great, as was the service at the desk. The food for breakfast was better than most breakfasts at other hotels. The room was a very good size and being able to rent a cot for our fifth person was great! Many hotels don't have that as an option. The price was fair as well. Very happy and would stay again for sure.
Excellent staff. Room was clean. The refrigerator noise bothered us. We unplugged it while we were sleeping. Pet friendly. Pet business area is provided. Guests are also friendly and well mannered. Hotel maintained large area of the lawn beautifully. WiFi was slow in the room but fine in the lobby area. Overall we enjoyed our stay.
Loved the hotel all the staff and the friendliness and cleanliness of the property. Excellent for a family and Pets. Great Pool, wonderful area for dog walking. The hotel staff handled some very delicate arrangements we needed for our daughter who uses a breathing machine and needs a ground floor room and they made it easy for us to get one on short notice.
We chose Hill City to be our stay place while we discovered the beauty of the Black Hills. Best Western Golden Spike met our needs. Our room was a down and out with our car parked right outside the door. Nothing special, but it was clean, room and the a/c worked! Buffet breakfast was included which was quite good. They used the main restaurant for seating. It got to be very busy the second day and they couldn't get food out fast enough and even had a sign out, that you could eat there for a fee if you were not a guest. We did not have reservations in advance but worked out well and became a best western member giving us a room discount. They have a lovely indoor pool in a newer building but our granddaughter liked the smaller one outside. The lobby area included a better than average gift shop along with blue bunny ice cream and a coffee/pastry counter. We were quite comfortable and felt safe there. Thank you Golden Spike!
Kids loved the 2 pools, adults loved the attentive staff and central location. Reception made us feel at home, attempted to pronounce our difficult last name and came pretty close. He must have been practicing and expressed mild disappointment when he didn't get it right. We stayed on the 3rd floor of the newer brick building that houses the indoor pool. It was very quiet and comfy. Only complaint would be a barking dog a couple rooms over but that ended within 5 minutes without us needing to complain. Loved the location too. 10-20 minutes to everything we wanted to see. Krull's market is next door and had much more selection and value than another market in Keystone. Overall we were very pleased with our stay.
If you want to be minutes away from the majesty of Mt. Rushmore, the beauty of the Crazy Horse Memorial, and the amazing views of American Bison at Custer State Park and still enjoy the comforts of a nice hotel and great complimentary breakfast it really can't be beat.
Stayed in their suite one night with 4 adults and 2 grandchildren. Room was big, clean, beautiful and quiet, Two separate rooms and a huge bathroom. Costly at $310 but surprisingly well worth it. Great staff from front desk to restaurant. Situated close to the charming little town with fun shops and walking distance to a grocery store surrounded by the beautiful Black Hills. Not many luggage carts so grab yours early.
So noisy, so expensive, not so clean, staff overworked and I'm sure underpaid. Place not made for people looking for a quite time. You can hear everyone walk by, upstairs and even two floors up. In advance we asked for a ground floor room, we did get that. A big mistake.....we heard everything.
We were traveling the west and decided one of our stops would be Mt. Rushmore and Crazy Horse. The hotel had a great location and the property was amazing. We traveled with our dog; the pet area was nice grassy area & he was even given a treat bag from the front desk. The desk staff was very helpful. We plan to come back on a future trip.
This hotel was exactly what we were looking for! The location was wonderful. Close drive to Custer State Park, minutes from Mount Rushmore and Crazy Horse as well as next door to a great market. We had the 2-Queen Suite which was perfect for our family. The separate sitting room with pull-out couch gave us all the space we needed. Staff was friendly and helpful and the pool area clean and spacious. Highly recommend to anyone staying in the area.
Hotel was in a great location to see tne important sites in South Dakota. Staff provided excellent service. Breakfast that came with the room was above average. Staff provided excellent service. Pools and hot tub were great.
I have been to this hotel many times. Every stay I have felt welcome but this past weekend was the best guest experience ever. My grandpa turned 102 and so we had lots of family to celebrate with him. On Saturday afternoon after we arrived I asked if we could make a reservation for 30 for that evening - the team at the Best Western Golden Spike accommodated our group and made sure everything was perfect! I highly suggest the prime rib. Sunday the restaurant is closed but they allowed us to use their meeting room for the group where we were able to comfortably gather. The front desk, housekeeping and restaurant staff were all so kind and gracious. I will come back and recommend if you are considering a place to stay in the Black Hills - Hill City is a very central town and the Golden Spike amazing!
The hotel room is small, but comfortable. The staff overall is friendly. The restaurant was a big hit. Restaurant staff was very attentive to customer needs. The chef even came out one night to talk to us to ensure we were happy with our meals. We did have one problem at check out, and the person at the front desk was unable to resolve the problem. It did appear that the inability to resolve the problem was due to poor training.
Nice clean hotel with indoor and outdoor pools. Great for a family. Perfect location for trips to Mt. Rushmore and Custer State Park. Close to restaurants in Hill City and Keystone. Complimentary breakfast served every morning with a wide selection available. Staff is very friendly and accommodating.
Ever get the feeling of family. This is a type of location that seemed to give off the feeling of home. The units in the location we were assigned were older yet comfortable. Probably part of the original motel type. We reserved late and most likely this part of the complex is used to handle the late reservations. Not saying anything was wrong. Everything was in a proper order. You are greeted with this good wholesome greating and the staff was exceptional. Enjoyed the town and the 1880 train and museum just a few blocks away. Real steam engine hauling site seeing passangers for a good two plus hours roundtrip to Keystone, SD a gateway city to Mt. Rushmore. The hotel is just far enough away from Mt. Rushmore to not be swept up the the commercialism of the site.
Very nice place to stay. Helpful staff and nice rooms. Nicely located to enjoy the Black Hills in any direction. We stayed 6 nights at this biker friendly hotel. The only real issue we had was the wifi was extremely slow. Other than that, I would highly recommend this hotel, and would definitely stay there again........
Very expensive with poor attitude customer service upon check-in. Hotel will promise one thing and then do something completely different. Horrible stair placement~outside in the middle of the rooms in oldest building. CAUTION~Do not get room by stairs! You are guaranteed to hear people running up and down the stairs, etc. Only stay on top floors as you will most likely have ignorant people placed above you and then the hotel will offer to move you instead of moving the ignorant people above you. Makes no sense! OVERALL PRETTY HORRIBLE!
Loved the hotel and facilities. Pool is nice and rooms are clean and fresh. Breakfast is great. The location is awesome and Hill City is a great town. Overall my family liked the Golden Spike and would highly recommend it!
I wouldn't hesitate to stay here again because it was clean and the customer service was good. That being said the room needed refurbished and the towels, linens etc were all a bit frayed although all were clean and serviceable. For a hotel breakfast our entire group was quite pleased particularly with the Belgian Waffle makers!
We were given a 2 queen suite. It had a great sitting area, kitchenette with bar that you could close off from the rooms. There were 2 sinks and a great tub surround. I was very impressed with this room and would recommend staying at this hotel.
We wanted a place that was centrally located to the sites we wanted to visit and this BW filled the bill. The room and bed were very comfortable, the hotel overall was clean. We didn't use the pool but it looked to be very fun for the kids. Staff was great!!!!
The hotel was clean and had everything we needed. We are grateful to have a place to stay were we can bring our dog. The breakfast was so so. It was convenient but could use an update. I thought the bed was comfortable but my wife didn't.
When staying at the facility it was very nice however when booking we noted we had a person with us who had pet allergies. They did put us in a building where the front entrance had a sign posted clearly pet free, smoke free building right on the door. Upon our first night there, there were 2 people walking out of our building with pets. When asking the employee he just said when we run out of pet rooms we send them to other buildings. Strike 1. Then when getting laundry soap and walking back to our building a lady is sitting at her window with it opened smoking in the building. Strike 2. When eating dinner at the restaurant next to the lobby all employees were standing around watching us. We all felt uncomfortable eating our meal. Don't get me wrong the food was alright but I like to eat without a crowd watching. Not the best experience.
This motel was dated and needs updating. Overall experience was OK. Since it is located in a popular tourist area, it was very busy while we were here. Only real complain was with the breakfast offering. The dining area was overrun with kids pushing and spilling food on the floor. The staff did their best but if you are looking for a pleasant breakfast, go elsewhere.
The room was a quiet location in the complex, very clean, especially for a pet friendly room. Staff was very accommodating and friendly. While I enjoyed the breakfast, it became monotonous over the week's stay. This is likely the nicest motel in the Hill City area.
We were just away from the busy noisy areas but still close enough to get to all the attractions with ease. The rooms were very comfortable and the rate was lower than anticipated. There was also plenty of free parking.
We were traveling at the last minute and finding a hotel was difficult. We were very pleased with to find this hotel. We wished we had had more time to enjoy it. The staff was vet pleasant and helpful.
The rooms were clean and spacious. We had two queens and a sofa bed. The small kitchen was a nice bonus. Free breakfast is a nice convienence. We were close to the major tourist things, Mount Rushmore, needles highway, crazy horse, Custer state park...
Great room, great staff! Had the prime rib from the restaurant, it was excellent! Rooms was clean and very comfortable too. Stayed for a night to visit Mount Rushmore. Place is super close and in a great location!
We stayed in one of the suites for our vacation. Was one of the best rooms we have ever had. Everything was clean, up to date and the bed was one of the most comfortable we have ever slept in!. Would love to know what type and brand it was so we could buy the same for our home use. Most area attractions were within a 20 minute drive. We would absolutely recommend this hotel to anyone!
Big, clean rooms! Great breakfast! Large indoor pool and hot tub (there is an outdoor pool, too). There is a restaurant on-site, though we didn't use it. Staff was pleasant and helpful. Only negative is slightly too firm beds. Really is a great place to stay. Would definitely stay there again.
We're so glad we stayed here. The rooms are spacious, clean and really a great value. The pool is excellent and the included breakfast was good as well. It's an easy and close proximity to Mt. Rushmore.
This hotel has it all - centrally located in a beautiful part of the world Black Hills, Crazy Horse, The Faces, George Mickelson trail, Great downtown shopping and food! This hotel is a great value and a perfect for business, family and pets.
Comfortable room and very friendly staff. Great location near restaurants and shops. Central location in the Black Hills perfect for day trips. Close to Mt Rushmore, Custer State Park, and many other attractions.
I made accommodations to include my dogs in the reservation but the hotel didn't bother to read them. I even called to confirm our reservations and they still didn't say that dogs weren't allowed in the building! When we showed up we made a big show of going out of their way to make up for the mistake (Of course I took documented proof of my requests) and they put us in a building with a big sign that said "NO DOGS". We were harassed by other guests all weekend. We couldn't sleep it off because the halls thumped with running children from the hallway and floor above. I wouldn't stay here again.
I don't know if I have the worst room in the entire hotel or if they are all this terrible. Doors slamming, the room vibrating from people walking and running down the wood framed floors, people talking loud outside everywhere. Good luck sleeping. I'll never come back here. So loud. You should greet your guests with ear plugs
Awesome staff, clean room, great hot tub. Breakfast was amazing. The hotel was close to downtown, just walking distance. We were able to walk everywhere we needed to. It was also next to a supermarket that has everything you need.
Very clean hotel, nice and clean rooms, especially the fair priced suites. Friendly staff, very good location in the nice town of Hill City within the Black Hill Forrest Parks, Mount Rushmore and Custer State Park. Perfect value. One of the best BWs I ever got so far...!
We stayed here for a long weekend and wasn't impressed. Our room was next to the ice maker and stairs. The receptionist made it VERY CLEAR that there would be a $250 fine if any pets were in the building. The sign on the door said no pets in the building but 3 different times I watched people walk out the door with their pets on a leash. The TV remote only partially worked, the fridge was so cold it froze all off our drinks/food, the fitted sheet for the bed would come off at a corner everytime you sat on the bed and the A/C unit sounded like a DC-10 ready for takeoff.
This was a nice place to stay, it was close to all the sites of Mt Rushmore and Crazy Horse. We didn't use any of the pool/hot tub or fitness amenities but they looked very nice. There were quite a few kids who ran through the hallways but thankfully it was quiet before ten. The restaurant offers a variety of dishes we can recommend their soup and pizza. The staff was friendly and helpful. The rooms were clean, but average and the internet was good.
Great place to stay in the middle of the Black Hills. Close to Rushmore, Crazy Horse, and Custer state park. Comfortable, quiet and affordable. We realty enjoyed the pool and outdoor deck area. Great breakfast, too!
Stayed here for 3 nights and little to complain about. Room was large, clean, and had fridge and microwave which was nice. Bathroom was good size with closet space. Shower pressure was good which is always iffy. Beds had lots of pillows and very comfortable. Free breakfast with lots of choices. Normally I snub my nose at continental breakfast but this was decent. Only complaint was how thin the walls are, we heard our neighbor get up in the middle of the night and use the restroom. Every noise outside our room could be heard in surround sound. Location is good, close to everything and right off the highway.
Loved the hotel, staff, pool and breakfast. Everything was good I highly recommend this hotel. We were in Hill City off season and the staff at the hotel were very helpful for restaurant recommendations for rainy day activities
The hotel was absolutely empty when we came in November. They close for the winter, so we were there in their final weeks of the year. The hotel felt clean and the staff was friendly. The breakfast was average for a Best Western. One weird note is the clothing shop in the lobby?
The room was clean and breakfast was good. Hot breakfast with waffles and the workers are very friendly. We just stayed one night, so we did not have time to experience the pool area. We called and told we would be a late check in and they were very friendly and helpful getting us checked in.
I was planning to hike up to Black Elk Peak and wanted to stay close to the trailhead so that I could get an early start. But many of the hotels in the Black Hill (and especially those nearer to Rushmore) were quite expensive or seemed like tourist traps. This one was cheaper, but the rooms were still spacious, clean and well tended. They had a good, full breakfast and the location was only a few miles from my trailhead (and not too far from Rushmore for those who are headed that way). The people at the front desk seemed liked they didn't really want to be there, but they weren't unkind or rude. The only caveat I would make was that the in-house restaurant was not a good place for dinner: The service was bad, the food mediocre (e.g. overcooked steak) and the prices relatively high. So go to the hotel, but skip the restaurant.
This hotel is wonderful , the suites a very large and done in a western decor , and the pool is big and with a beautiful view of the "hills " , I've learned not to trust some Best Western hotels ( as many are independently but the HILL CITY one is really nice ! It's been several years since I stayed there( 2008 ) and I the hotel does not have a free breakfast , but they do have a restaurant . Would stay there again !
The reception area/lobby is more like a gift shop than a lobby. I had a tiny hiccup at check in though. I had Included a note asking for a first floor room as it is difficult for us to take bags up stairs. I knew the hotel had a building with elevators so I made a note that any floor in that building would work. I had made my reservation six months earlier. I checked in around 1500 and was told my room was on the middle floor of the building without an elevator. This revealed in attention to guests special requests. I was told there were no first floor rooms of the type I had reserved available. I ended up having to show a copy of my reservation to the clerks that included my notes and the day my reservation was made. Once the clerks saw that (and noted I am a BW Diamond Select) they placed us in a top floor room in the building with the elevator. This room was an upgrade to a nice suite so that was appreciated. In the end I was treated very well. However, the hotel needs to pay more attention to their guests special requests in advance of their arrival so as to avoid potential issues. The room was very nice and my only complaint was that you could hear people above you walking around and talking extremely well. The bed was comfortable and we enjoyed out time in the room. The suite was very nicely furnished with a whirlpool tub, fireplace and kitchenette with a small bar and two stools. The kitchenette had a sink, microwave and refrigerator. The sitting area had a sofa and easy chair. There were three luggage racks in the room (I've never seen this many in a single room). The sitting area and living room both had a TV. They had clothesline was installed behind the curtain rod over the bathtub; this is a feature I usually find only in coastal/tropical locations. We had dinner in the restaurant and were not really impressed with the meal. We had fajitas that were very unusual as the meat was did not seem well seasoned and the veggies were a small pile of diced peppers and onions. With both ordered the fajitas and our meals were supposed to come with guacamole. The guacamole did not arrive and, after we asked for it, we were given only one little plastic cup full for two people. The menu also said the meal would come with three tortillas but we each received only two. It seemed there was a huge disconnect between the kitchen, servers and the people who prepare the menu. We did enjoy some ice cream that we thought was nicely priced. Breakfast was fine. They had a lot of choices, to include scrambled eggs and breakfast potatoes. There was greek style yogurt and plenty of cereal and bread choices. The hotel breakfast staff worked very hard to keep all the buffet items well supplied. Special note - they had all the items needed just outside of our building to clean your car windows or wipe down your motorcycle. This was very thoughtful and I took full advantage. I would stay here again when in the area but I will be certain to call in advance to ensure the hotel staff are aware of my special requests.
I normally do not enjoy staying at Best Western, but this one surprised us with service quality, friendly staff, good breakfast, and clean room. The lobby makes a pleasant impression, and reception guys from Honduras were very welcoming and helpful in finding restaurant at the late hour. The room was quite clean and pleasant. Would be happy to stay there again, if I visit Black Mountains once more.
We stayed here with two young kids. The pool was a good size. The breakfast was great with tons of seating. Great location to be in order to visit Mt. Rushmore the next day. Room was clean, very spacious and had lots of extra pillows and blankets. We were there during the off season but it seemed like a good value. It was what we expect from a Best Western.
I enjoyed my stay at this location. It is near to Crazy Horse and Mount Rush More. The place was clean. The breakfast was very good, even fora vegetarian. The hotel staff was friendly. The check-in and check-out was easy. I will consider Best Western hotel chain when I travel next time. They are little bit more expensive, but the quality is good and worth it.
This was a great find...very good value. Would highly recommend this hotel. Although their restaurant had closed for the season there were some excellent restaurants in tow. The night clerk who checked us in was very accommodating in changing our room so I (72 yo) wouldn't have to carry our luggage up stairs.
Perfect for travellers wanting to take in all of the sights. The location is so close to Mt. Rushmore and Crazy Horse that you can drive by them on each day of your stay without taking out too much time from your schedule to get just the right lighting and pics! The suites are clean, roomy and comfortable. The breakfast is just right.
We stayed there because of TripAdvisor, and we weren't disappointed. Very clean, close enough to all of the attraction, and was in a nice quaint lil town. The employees were very nice and helpful. I just wish we stayed longer.
We stayed here for 5 nights while attending the chuckwagon jamboree as well as lots of sightseeing and it was a very good experience. We opted for the suite and it was very comfortable and clean. We had asked for a second luggage rack, and they found one for us promptly. Good location as it was close to town as well as the other attractions such as Mt. Rushmore, Crazy Horse and Custer State Park. Breakfast was average. Very good experience.
My wife and I spent two nights here while we went to Mt. Rush-more and the Crazy Horse monument. It is a short drive to both from Hill City. The Golden Spike is a clean, friendly, and nice looking place to stay. They also have a good hot breakfast.
What a nice surprise to find in the hills! My king room was spacious, clean, and beautifully remodeled, comolete with granite counter tops and stainless steel fridge and microwave! All the comforts of home....very good bed, a selection of pillows, and really quiet. The front desk person, Jason, was friendly and very helpful. Breakfast was a dull hot buffet with lots of choices for either hot or cold breakfast. The regular restaurant hours have been reduced due to the time of year. I had orginally planned to stay at Holly House, but it was horrible so I left and came to find another place. So even though I did not have a reservation, Jason treated me with respect and gave me the rate I qualified for. Highly recommend.
We spent two night at the Golden Spike Inn & Suites and found it to be extremely comfortable. Great beds and and love the 4 pillows on each bed. The staff was very helpful, the amenities are excellent. This is the perfect location when visiting Custer State Park and the Black Hills area. Would highly recommend this Inn.
We stayed 2 nights at the Golden Spike Inn & Suites during our road trip across the Dakotas. This was one of the best BW's that we have stayed in so far! The rooms were clean, the beds were comfortable with lots of pillows and the staff were friendly! Since the breakfast area is located in the hotel restaurant, there are more than enough tables and room to move around. The area was kept clean and well stocked with a good selection of both hot and cold selections. Hill City is the perfect central location for visiting all the amazing sites in the Black Hills. If you are in the area and are looking for a nice, reasonable place to stay, I recommend you give them a try!
Spent two nights at the Golden Spike to be close to the Buffalo Roundup at Custer State Park. There was a complimentary breakfast with good selections and it was served early to help the tourists get to the Roundup on time. I used the laundry -- $3.50 to wash and dry plus $1.00 per box of detergent. I could have walked to the nearby market and saved some money buying supplies there, I'll bet. The room was clean and WiFi signal was good. Would recommend this place to those who want to stay a few days and explore the Black Hills area.
From checking in too checking out the staff were amazing. The maid service is the best I have ever had staying for several days in a hotel. We would leave in the morning to see the attractions (which were all close to this location) and return in the late afternoon to a clean room and even the pull out beds were made with the blankets we had brought with. The staff every morning for the breakfast buffet were friendly and kept the food coming out in a timely manner. We had a Suites and found it comfortable for three adults and three children. The outdoor pool was the only let down but the indoor pool and hot tub made up for it. Would highly recommend Golden Spike Inn & Suites for anyone looking for a place to stay as they visit the beautiful Black Hills.
Good point...near Mt. Rushmore. And then it went downhill...We entered the lobby looking at the top of the clerk's head. He had his head down on the desk. The front area looks like a Vegas wanna be gift shop...to the left as you walk in. To the right is the restaurant. Off to our room---a room that was very stinky and dated. I was really not sure I'd be able to sleep. Wanting to get to Mt. Rushmore, we opted for eating in the restaurant there and the special listed on a sign board in the lobby sounded okay. We are not picky eaters, but the food was downhill from horrible. Fish that was still icy in the middle, instant potatoes and gravy, nasty slaw, and half a piece of Texas toast (toasted white bread). Due to the food not being palatable, we were still hungry. The waiter asked how our food was and we told him that it was bad. He shrugged and asked if we wanted dessert. I asked for his recommendation and he quickly recommended coconut cream pie. We ate it, but it was the worst I'd ever had. It was obviously a frozen pie and tasted like it had thawed and sat in the box a week or so...and tasted like the box. We drank water. For our "specials" and dessert, the charge was $30+ for two. I would NOT stay there again and surely would NOT eat in that restaurant.
As a base to explore the Black Hills area this hotel is a good choice. The room was big and clean, but the bathroom (with shower) was on the small side. As often at Best Western hotels of this category the lighting in the rooms is rather cheerless. This being a two-level building, make sure to ask for a first-floor room, as noisy upstairs neighbors can spoil your sleep. Wifi was free and worked well. Breakfast was simple. Parking available in front of the rooms.
We loved this hotel. We stayed in a suite and loved the size of the room. Breakfast is top-notch. Staff were very courteous & helpful. The location is perfect for site seeing in the Black Hills. We would recomend this hotel to others & will definitely stay there again.
Steamed Steak? Really? No Worcestershire or other sauce besides catsup to KILL THE TASTE or HELP THE TEXTURE? COME ON!!! DO NOT...REPEAT... DO NOT EXPECT AN EDIBLE MEAL UNLESS YOU ARE INTO STEAMED CUISINE!! The room was fantastic and the young woman who cleaned was very nice. Quiet, Clean, Affordable ! Reported that the ice machine was not working or empty but NO ONE fixed the situation. I do not know how to rate the experience. I will give it a 1 so people read about the restaurant. However, the room and cleaning staff deserve a 5!
Rooms were typical hotel room size, and everything was clean and comfortable. Typical breakfast buffet included - tasty options and also dining area was more like a restaurant w booths and tables. Pretty outdoor patio avail w tables and umbrellas.
We took a road trip with our two dogs and decided that the Black Hills Area would be fun. Searched for a central location hotel that was dog friendly. We definitely chose the right location and hotel. Our room was ground floor and very close to the dog-walk area. The set up was ideal for our needs. Also had bags for poop clean up handy in the dog-walk area. We had take out from the on-site restaurant for dinner after our hiking and siteseeing during the day. The food was quite tasty. Hamburgers and fries one night and pizza the next. Highly recommend this Best Western!
This is a good place to stay (centrally located) to Mount Rushmore etc. It is just outside of town (walkable). The breakfast is tasty and there is a restaurant on site during the summer. AN adder touch is materials to clean car windows.
We were upgraded to a luxury suite which made our stay even more enjoyable. Two bedrooms with a full kitchen and living room provided more than enough room for my sister and me. On site restaurant is okay....pizza was quite good and service was friendly.
The location was very nice and convenient to all the places we wanted to see. Hill City is one of the nicer towns in the area over Custer or Keystone. It is close to Needles Highway and also the Tunels. It is only one and one half hour to drive to Badlands National Park and 45 minutes drive to Deadwood.
Nice room but the motel is loud. Convenient to attractions, especially the 1880 Train. Great breakfast with lots of room to sit which was needed given the popularity of the breakfast. Friendly staff. Nice bakery/coffee shop (chocolate chip cookies are tasty). My friends appreciated having the NFL Network available on the in-room cable (for a pre-season Packers game! Really?). Nice pool and hot tub area though it is in another building (from our room).
Was very surprised at the quality of my room for this rate. It was off season and they upgraded my room. Very clean, quite and lots of space in the room. Bed very comfortable. Good location. Very close to Mt. Rushmore and Crazy Horse. Will be back if I am ever in the area again.
Very clean and spacious. They have an indoor swimming pool although not very big and a whirlpool. The fitness center is small with only three things. They have a treadmill, bicycle and elliptical. The price was also reasonable and it is close to Mt. Rushmore.
Lodging was as advertised. Stayed in a spacious suite in a relatively new, smoke-free building. The suite itself was clean and modern; however, the mattresses were of inferior quality which impeded a good night's sleep. The on-site complimentary breakfast was of typical quality and was sufficient. The evening meals at the on-site restaurant were a bit disappointing - the meat was tough both nights I ate there. It is about a 100-yard walk from the suite building to the lobby/restaurant area, but weather was good while we were there.
The location of this hotel was perfect for our Mt. Rushmore vacation. Our room was large, comfortable, well-appointed, and clean! The breakfast each morning really started our day off on the right foot. There was a great variety of items, including meat, eggs, and potatoes. We ate dinner at the on-site restaurant two times during our stay and enjoyed the food and the service (not to mention the convenience!). If we ever get back to the Mt. Rushmore area, we would love to stay at this hotel again.
We stayed here only one night and had made the reservation weeks earlier. This is really an inn disguised as a motel but it has anything you'll need. The staff is very friendly and accommodating. The guest laundry proved useful at this point in our trip and the pool area is well maintained. I'm an early riser and find it quite odd to be sitting in the lobby with no one else to be seen (including employees) considering that the food in the restaurant is fully accessible and I'm sitting in the midst of an open shop of upscale upscale women's clothing and jewelry that is part of the lobby. Perhaps there is a sophisticated surveillance system that is well concealed. Overall, this is nice place to stay and is a covenient location to the nearby attractions and parks and downtown Hill City is just around the corner.
The room was fine a little bit cold but the AC switched on and off during the night. This is a motel even though it is called an inn. We spent here only 1 night to see Mount Rushmore (only 20-25 minutes away). Breakfast was a shocking experience for me. You could not have decent breakfast in here that is for sure!
Nice hotel with great location. We stayed at the newer units that are next to the typical Best Western two story units. If staying here ask for the newer units that have large bedrooms and a nice sitting area with a little table and chairs with a sofa sleeper. Great beds with plenty of pillows. Nice and clean. The staff were nice at check in. There is a small restaurant with free continental breakfast. The lobby has a gift shop and clothing area. Mount Rushmore is close to this hotel. Only negative was the water had a strong odor and strong chlorine taste for drinking. Management should look into fixing this.
My husband and I recently spent 2 nights here in an upstairs room in a block opposite reception. The room was fine.Breakfast was good and the facilities(coffee bar, gift shop and, unusual nowadays,an on-site restaurant which we enjoyed for dinner) were very useful. But the reason why I'm writing this is to commend the VICTOR at reception. We had a problem with the car and needed to call Hertz from the hotel,as we didn't take mobiles.VICTOR made several calls for us to various people to get it sorted, which was very much appreciated.A very good place to stay in a nice, small town.Thank you again VICTOR.
But nothing special. Checkin was quick and polite. The hotel had numerous luggage carts available which helped. I was on the first floor of the two story unit and the people upstairs were up and walking about very late, unfortunately I could hear every step. The room air conditioner was slow to cool down the room, and I eventually had to open the window to get some cool air. The room was clean and roomy.
The room was great. It was always very clean and well kept. The pool in the hotel was big and the outside one was decently sized. The hot tub was good sized too. Breakfast was very good. The was a wide variety of food to choose from. It was always warm and tasty. Parking is free. This hotel is right in the middle of everything in the Mt. Rushmore area which makes it a great choice!
We loved staying at the Best Western on our recent vacation. The rooms were clean, the service was amazing, the breakfast was awesome and the internet service was great. We certainly will stay at a Best Western in the future.
This hotel is a good starting point for Mt. Rushmore, Crazy Horse, Sturgis, Deadwood, Custer St Park, etc. We stayed in a suite for four days. The rooms were spacious and clean. We appreciated the double vanity in the bathroom and the kitchen area was convenient though there was no serveware provided. There is a supermarket next door, but it is a 15 minute or so walk to the main street area. The free breakfast was good with many choices, and all the staff we encountered were friendly. We had issues with both TVs but they were promptly fixed. The only negative was that the ice and vending machines were inoperable for two days of our stay. Also, it would be nice if there was a bench outside Building A for those of us who enjoy a puff with our morning coffee. All in all, I can recommend this hotel.
The Best Western Golden Spike is a great, central location in Hill City. You can drive to all the attractions from this one location with ease. We stayed in one of the bedroom/living room suites, which worked out great. One can go to bed and the other can stay up, watch TV or read without disturbing the other. Double sinks in bath area worked out great. Breakfast was good each day we were there and offered just about anything you could want.
A great place to stay. Great employees, great breakfasts, great service, great amenities, easy access to everything there is to see in the Hill City/Keystone, SD area. Easy walking distance to Hill City where the people are so welcoming, food is great, shopping is WONDERFUL, Teddy Bear Museum is one not to miss. Krull Grocery employees so kind and helpful. Sandy Swallow Gallery is the BEST -- Wayne and Sandy Swallow have stories and history everyone should hear. Thanks Wayne and Sandy Swallow!!
For the money it was a good value. I have stayed in nicer rooms, but they cost a lot more. Even the expensive ones if you look enough you will find something dirty/dusty. And I have stayed in some dumps. I would stay at this motel any time I'm in the area.
Great hotel! Very friendly staff and very well maintained. The location is great to explore all of the Black Hills. Very nice pool and outside pool area too! The breakfast was good and they have a large room to fit everyone and it had a friendly feel!! A bit pricey but still a nice hotel for the area. we would stay there again!
Great AAA rate. Clean room, nice big sink area, clean comfy bed, lots of towels. Wonderful complimentary breakfast. 20 minutes to beautiful Sylvan Lake, close to mount Rushmore. Downtown has awesome shops & cool bar/restaurants. Very nice. Loved the fact they offered us a second night for 49.99 which worked perfectly for us. I would stay again. Very kind employees.
The hotel was clean and the breakfast was fresh and good. Great value and comfortable place to stay. I will go back if I am in the area, for sure. The staff was friendly and very responsive to our needs. My only suggestion is an on-site small store/vending area to sell such things as razors, etc.
THis was a very nice place to stay. Center location for the Black Hill places we wanted to visit. Breakfast was very good with different options each day. The staff was very pleasant and helpful. Very relaxing with the pool and hot top along with the deck areas to visit with friends.
My daughter and I traveled to South Dakota for vacation and I chose Hill City and the Best Western because the price is fair and easy to get to from Rapid City airport. The breakfast is perfect to get the day started as we traveled to several areas to experience the history of the southwest area of the state.
Nice location near downtown Hill City. Centrally located between the local sites that we wanted to visit. Registration was smooth and rooms were available quickly. Decent place to stay. Nice to have breakfast included and staff was friendly and helpful. Rooms were clean and area was well manicured.
We booked the hotel based on trip advisor comments. We were disappointed. The windows were so gross you could barely see out side. The light fixtures were filled with bugs. Outdated room with dirty carpet. It was a great location and breakfast was great. Pool and hot tub were nice. We cancelled our 2nd night stay and asked for a confirmation of that, but 2 people told us they do not do that, which was odd, you'd want a confirmation of canceling so you would not be charged? I guess I will see when our bill comes. Close to downtown and ok, but if we go back I do not think we would stay here. The breakfast was our favorite part.
Great location, you could easily walk to town. The hotel is a little dated, however it offered s great price and location that worked for us. We stayed in the main building and they did not have an elevator so it was difficult to get luggage to the 2nd floor. The front desk people were so nice and helpful they made our stay pleasant. The breakfast in the morning was great and set up perfectly. We had dessert one night and the ice cream and pie were delicious. I would definitely stay there again!
A decent hotel to explore the beautiful Black Hills area. The room was comfortable and clean, the bed good, the bathroom small. Wifi was fine, and the room had Cable TV. No private safe. Parking is available in front of the room. Breakfast is included but just basic. The overall pricing is in the summer season slightly too high for what's offered.
two irritations sliced it down to a "4". First the really good: -was upgraded to a suite - complimentary -breakfast was great - kid loved it -great location to travel to Mount Rushmore, Custer State Park, etc. -clean and well-kept -friendly front-desk personnel BUT - the worst internet connection I've ever experienced at any hotel/motel and - the kicker - no sound proofing between floors. Unless you're on the highest floor, you'll hear stomping, clanging, banging, thudding, etc. from the guests above you. It ruined my sleep and left me grouchy. I had made a note about being on the highest floor when I booked on bestwestern.com but, apparently, these guest requests never make it to the individual hotel (this is what the front desk told me). As such, the hotel had no third floor rooms left by the time I checked in. Hence, the "4" rating. If management fixed the horrible sound proofing issue and upgraded the internet connection, then this would be a "5" for sure. I'd stay here again but only if I could get a room on the highest floor.
I made a mistake on the dates when I first reserved a room, but the manager was understanding and did not charge me for my error - even though it was way past the cancellation time. Also, we had two rooms and the staff made sure our rooms were located very close to each other. Though totally booked and with a lot of kids round in this vacation area, the rooms were very quiet. Loved the decor of the rooms. Just a very enjoyable stay.
This Best Western was standard and satisfactory. The room we stayed in was clean and there were no bedbugs (HUGE plus). The staff was pleasant and continental breakfast was standard. Pretty decent value for the money; nothing special.
Found this hotel to be nice and comfortable for our stay. Enjoyed the comforts of the room and breakfast. Quiet atmosphere. Easy to find and the staff was friendly and welcoming. Would chose to stay here again when traveling through the Black Hills.
I was very pleased with my stay at the Best Western. Our suite was fantastic. I love that there are shutter doors between the sleeping area and the living room. There are double sinks and a really nice shower. I would recommend requesting a room on the top floor if you prefer not to hear the neighbors above you. We spent some time at the indoor pool, but they have an outdoor pool as well. We happened to be visiting during Sturgis so it was impossible to not to deal with the noise of all the Harleys. Overall a good stay though.
Rooms were standard motel rooms. There was nothing outstanding about the room. Staff was friendly and helpful. Breakfast and coffee were not good. About ready to give up on the review because it has to have 200 characters.
This is a great place to stay if you are visiting Mt. Rushmore. They have a friendly staff and comfortable rooms. There was a microwave and mini fridge in the room. And an indoor pool. They have a complimentary continental breakfast. My only complaint is their tiny parking lot; but we did find a space when we came back from Mt Rushmore at night.
Very nice. Terrific free breakfast. Perfect location to get to everywhere easily. My Rushmore. Crazy Horse. Needles Hywy. Sylvan Lake. Deadwood. Rapid City!! Great museum in town! Cool old steam engine tour! Warm with amazing thunderstorms
The room was very spacious and comfortable. The bed was comfortable and it had a separate couch with TV. Good for a family. Centrally located for sight seeing. Very nice pool area and work out area. This was my grandson's favorite hotel of the 4 we stayed in during our trip.
This was our favorite hotel on our trip. We stayed in other Best Westerns, Hampton Inn and a budget/family owned hotel. This hotel had a family suite that we stayed in. It costs a bit more but everyone loved it. We appreciated the extra space. Two queen beds in one room with bathroom access. The sink was in the bedroom part which was great for our group. Both areas had a tv. The other room had a sofa bed and mini kitchen/bar area. Breakfast was wonderful. Everyone was able to get what they wanted. We went to Custer park for the evening and Mount Rushmore in the morning. I wish we would have went to the evening lighting ceremony at Mount Rushmore. However, we enjoyed our trip to Custer park. We hiked a bit, went on the wilderness road drive and drove through the rock tunnels. If you love trains, there is a railway museum nearby. We didn't go but will if stay in the area again.
This hotel was thoroughly comfortable and convenient to Mount Rushmore, Crazy Horse, Harney Peak, and Wind Cave National Park. The hotel had heat in the bathroom, coffee makers in the rooms and continental breakfast in the morning. It was very clean and within walking distance of all the Hill City shopping and dining. Would definitely stay again!
A nice place to stay, sometimes a little noisy, lots of guests. Nice breakfast buffet. We did have a couple issues which we spoke to the front desk about and they were responsive and accomodating. One of those issues was the mattress on the sofa bed. Within 20 minutes we had a brand new mattress! The hotel is conveniently located next to a grocery store. It is right off the main highway but we didn't get any road noise. We did however get noise from the guests in the room above us. It sounded like their kids were jumping of the bed repeatedly. The hotel staff tried to be helpful with this issue as well but kids will be kids. I would give the hotel an 'Average' overall considering the handful of issues we had but because the staff was responsive and helpful feel it deserves a 'Very Good'.
There are two buildings, one older and one newer, with a central parking lot. Our room, in the older building, was clean and the beds, very comfortable. The vanity/sink area was separate from the bathroom, which we prefer, but the toilet and tub/shower room was extremely cramped, making it difficult to close the door to use the toilet. Staff accommodated our needs cheerfully, and check-in and check-out were quick. Full breakfast included many options; however, the quality of individual items was inconsistent, with some over-ripe fruit and watery (powdered?) eggs. Basic-but-sufficient, the indoor and outdoor swimming pools, hot-tub, and exercise room required a walk across the parking lot to the newer building. Towels, a shower, and a bathroom are conveniently located within the pool area. Area attractions are within a reasonable driving distance. All-in-all, we would stay here, again.
When I made the reservation, I put in the comments section "We will be bringing our dog with us. If possible, please let us have a suite as our dog is very well behaved." When I checked in, they gave us room 134 and I thought great, but then I had to initial a piece of paper saying dogs aren't allowed in the room so they gave us room 212. When I saw the outside doors to the rooms (translation - old hotel), I knew there was going to be a smell and sure enough, the room had that nasty, musty smell and the only way to get rid of it is to level the building and build a new hotel. On the second floor walkway, I have no idea why management hasn't ripped up that stained blue/gray carpet yet; it's an eyesore and I don't think any hotel chain has those anymore. We found old underwear and a sandwich bag underneath the dresser. When I took my dog out, I noticed another person with a dog go into the new building where I was told dogs weren't allowed. I asked him and he told me they gave him a room in that building because no pet rooms were available in the old building. The bathroom is extremely small, there is no place to stow your luggage, and there isn't an enclosed closet in the room. Full, hot breakfast? The eggs aren't real and the bananas were over ripe. It definitely is not worth $222 a night so we checked out 2 days early which ruined our vacation because we didn't get to see anything in the Black Hills area.
It looks like the rooms were updated but an old hotel will never get rid of that nasty, musty smell. Plus, the bathroom was very small, there wasn't someplace to stow your luggage, and there wasn't an enclosed closet. And please rip up that stained outside blue/gray carpet; it looks to be about 50 years old and I don't think any hotel chain has carpet on a walkway anymore. A full hot breakfast? I don't think the eggs were real and the bananas were over ripe. Definitely not worth $222 a night; we checked out 2 days early.
Having stayed at other hotels in Hill City, Best Western has much friendlier and accommodating services. Our room was clean and quiet and our family of 5 had a wonderful stay. We highly recommend this hotel.
The hotel is very nice and most of the staff were very helpful. There was one gentleman at the front desk when we checked in who was not very helpful and was really quite rude. The rest of the staff was very nice.
The place was full but our room was nice. Beds were comfortable with nice linens. We enjoyed both the indoor and outdoor pools. The staff were working hard to keep up with a full hose crowd for breakfast. They did a great job. Overall a great stay very near lots of attractions.
Absolutely a wonderful hotel. Great accommodations and great staff. Breakfast exceeded our expectations!! Large rooms with setting area, 2 TV's. Great shower. They offer a coffee bar, ice cream and more. We'll be back!
Wish we had stayed longer. The hotel has won Best Western awards for excellence. Breakfast was very good, nice selection. Dinner was okay but not special. We had a burger and taco salad. Salad was yummy. Nice pools and very clean and secure laundry room. Would definitely stay again.
What a wonderful location for an exceptional hotel. Truly a BEST Western. Great facilities and newly renovated. Ample Parking, clean, everything is kept in good working order. Make your reservation today.
This was a great central location for our family vacation. I loved that we were close to the 1880 Train, Mount Rushmore and Crazy Horse Memorial. The kids loved the pool. The complimentary breakfast was delicious and a very nice amenity.
We stayed here for 4 days to see the sights of South Dakota! Hill City is "centrally" located to see Mt. Rushmore, Deadwood, Devil's Tower, Crazy Horse, Sylvan Lake, Custer State Park, Wall Drug and the Badlands. This hotel is a great place! I am extremely detailed to things and I would say this is a solid 8! The only thing I would suggest is that they get a better Internet server when the hotel is packed..Couldn't get on it and I used 1GB of data!
We visited this hotel as a stopping point on a family road trip. The rooms were clean, well appointed and very comfortable. We also had great views of the hills and the staff was very helpful and friendly. The hotel is perfectly situated in the quaint town of Hill City halfway between Mount Rushmore and the Crazy Horse monument. We were able to see both and then circle back to enjoy a delicious pizza delivered to our room, which the kids noted as their 4th favorite part of the trip:) (The first two were the parks, the third was the hotel's great indoor pool!) If we head back to SD we'll definitely stay again! It's a great place!
Nice hotel in the center of all things in SW south dakota.Staff was helpful and friendly. Restaurant was very good. we enjoyed eating at the hotel restaurant and usually we try to avoid it. But the food and service was the better than any other place we tried.
It was clean, got a free upgraded room. All was swell. The pool was clean and enjoyable. The restaurant was delicious too. The pillows were comfy and the shower was clean; all good things in my book. Would stay again when in this area.
Our family stayed here 4 nights while visiting local attractions. Our room was a nicely appointed 2 queen bed suite. The room had bifold doors and could be partitioned into 2 rooms (bedroom area and living/dining areas). Indoor and outdoor pools were nice and well maintained. Continental breakfast was your typical hotel breakfast. Hill City is a quaint little western town with some nice shops and restaurants. There is a grocery store next door to the hotel. Staff was very friendly. We would stay here again.
I was very impressed with this hotel. The rooms were very updated and clean. It was comfortable and a great place to stay for even one night. Very close to Mount Rushmore without paying an insane price. There is a grocery and liquor store right next door that was convenient as well. If I were to travel near Rushmore again I would go out of my way to choose to stay here.
I usually don't stay at Best Westerns, but I am so glad I trusted Trip Advisor reviewers, and stayed here! The service was good, the room and the hotel grounds were very clean. My favorite thing about this hotel was the outside seating areas. We enjoyed a glass of wine on the patio outside the indoor pool, did some reading by the outdoor pool, and enjoyed breakfast out on the restaurant patio! My husband and I needed a quiet getaway, and even though this hotel was busy, it didn't feel busy!
the decor really fit in with the old west and was much nicer than the regular outside appearance of other Best Westerns. we got a suite and the size was perfect for a family of 4. this location was also very centrally located for the Black Hills area.
Well placed location with reasonably value . Breakfast was a great surprise but dinner experience needs to be better.Probably difficult with other quality restaurants in this small town. Nice touch is having a Starbuck type coffee/pastries offering. Unfortunate that we had the room right by the pool . I understand the difficulty in trying to enforce the 10pm closing time with a lot of youthful energy and families still cooling off form the heat of the day. I should have asked for a different room since we were early risers.
The most awesome staff, patient and knowledgeable!! Wonderful breakfasts (free with the room) and attached restaurant on site for other meals (was reasonable priced ((10% off if you are staying there)) and excellent food) We were there 3 years ago and it is still as clean as on that visit!! We will always seek our the Golden Spike BW when we are in the Black Hills areas. Very close to all adventures in the Black Hills - stay more than one day to see it all!!! It deserves more than a 10 rating!!
Hotel is located right in Hill City, central to everything. Older hotel that has been updated beautifully. Staff was pleasant and helpful. Even opened up the ice cream coffee area when we went in at 10pm an hour after closing be caused they overheard our 13 year old son really wanting ice cream.....wish I got that gentleman's name as that was so awesome. Really small outdoor pool but inside pool and hot tub were adequate after a long day sightseeing. Had a 3rd floor double queen with divided sitting area, fireplace and small kitchenette. Awesome big bathroom with huge deep jetted tub...my favorite place. I absolutely loved this hotel and location. Would definitely stay here next time we visit. Only negative was the WiFi. It worked in our room briefly then never again. I didn't complain as I wanted our kids to unplug. Unfortunately our cell data maxed out.
the location was great many restaurants to eat at, the in house restaurant has the best pizza, the kids loved the indoor/outdoor pool, rooms are big and also clean, you cant go wrong here at hillcity, you are in the middle of many attractions.
The motel is conveniently located for visiting Devil's Tower, the parking is good, and the rooms are good. The wi-fi was fine. The breakfast had an outstanding selection for choices, including microwave-able sausage biscuits. The breakfast food was constantly re-supplied. Do stay here if you are in the area.
We stayed here for two nights while visiting Mount Rushmore and Custer State Park on our Western US road trip. We had one of the rooms with a separate bedroom. The "separate" bedroom is behind a set of double wood-slat doors so if privacy is what you are looking for, you won't have it. Also, if you have young kids, don't let them play with the doors as they are a major pinch hazard. The main reason we booked this room in Hill CIty was that it had a kitchenette. Buyer beware, all you get is a counter-top sized mini-fridge and a small microwave. There were no utensils or dishware to eat from. I called the front desk and was told there were none for the room. That seems very odd but maybe they do it to drive business to their hotel restaurant. The pool area is very large and has a nice hot tub. Temp was a little cool for my liking. We didn't venture to the outside pool as there was a thunderstorm overhead. The second evening we ordered food from the hotel restaurant. It was prepared quickly but one of the kids pizzas was made incorrectly. When I called about it they acted that it shouldn't be a big deal (don't mess with a 10 year olds pizza!). I asked them to make a new one and they agreed but they wouldn't start it until I returned the one that was made incorrectly so they could make sure it was wrong. Really?!? I've been working in food service for 20+ years. You don't make the customer prove the item is wrong, you fix it ASAP, especially with something with a low food cost like pizza. I walked over with the wrong one and had to wait 25 minutes while another one was prepared. I was NOT happy. The breakfast area was shared with the restaurant and was set-up well and well stocked. There was a large group/family that came in right at the end and they put out more food to accommodate them. I'm sure we'll be back to Hill City in the future, I'm just not sure if we'll be back to Best Western.
Some problems with getting room cleaned early in the day after checking in. Sometimes, bed turned down rather than cleaned. Better than average breakfast with two hot selections, plus oatmeal. Gorgeous gift shop. Large indoor pool great in middle of day when kids aren't around. Kids and pets allowed (can get boisterous). Mattresses a bit on the soft side. Cable TV choices a little limited.Nearby grocery store convenient for stocking veggies to feed burros in Custer State Park
We stayed here for a week. All of the staff were friendly and wonderful. The breakfast in the morning was great. The room was clean and everything was refreshed daily. They have an indoor and outdoor pool and a hot tub. The area for that is very nice the kids had a great time.
I would not stay at this hotel again. The room that we had was very musty smelling. The hotel staff was okay but not overly friendly by any means. If you happen to stay here do not eat at the restaurant in the hotel. The server had no idea what was gong on in the kitchen and it took forever for us to get our food. Then when our food did come the meat was so tough that you couldn't even eat it. We did complain to the waiter who said he couldn't do anything about it then talked with the manager who didn't care either. I would never stay here again if I was in the area. There are tons of hotels in the area. Find a better one to stay at.
This was a standard Best Western with very good rooms, service and location to Hill City and the Mt. Rushmore attractions. It served a full breakfast buffet. It was quite large and it had a full parking lot, but the large number of people was handled well during breakfast and check-out
First the positives. We were very happy with the room (Standard Suite); it suited our family of five very well having the living area separated by folding doors which facilitated naps and different bedtime schedules. The breakfast offering was great. Waffles, yogurt bar, cereal, toast and other breads, biscuits and gravy, sausage or ham, etc. There were two pools, one indoor and one outdoor. The indoor one was on the colder side, but overall, it was a great setup, and our kids loved going swimming there. This was a very family friendly hotel; I'd certainly recommend it for families. The location was also very centrally located to Mount Rushmore and the surrounding activities. Now the negatives. Upon check-in, we received a letter from the hotel that said that if we don't plan on giving a fully positive review, to talk to them about it. Perhaps this is normal for hotels to do, but I was annoyed by this. I would have appreciated this saying "If we can do anything to make your stay better, please contact our front desk." They were more concerned about ratings than service. Unimpressed by that. Second, and this is relatively minor, but still annoying, the woman doing the housekeeping work, although the quality of her work was good, she kept asking us in the morning if we were leaving for the day, or if she could clean our room, as we exited. We were good about putting the sign on the door knob to indicate this, and didn't appreciate being asked. Third, the internet service quality was insufficient. Clearly, they do not really have the capability to accommodate the amount of devices trying to access the network, because we couldn't watch videos online, and uploading photos took longer than what is considered normal. I was usually able to access the network with my phone, but often my husband was denied access, as well as with our laptop by the end of the trip. This all may be due to the local Internet Service Providers and what they have to offer, and therefore not exactly the fault of the hotel, but in their letter, they could have provided warning about the quality of the connection, limiting the watching of videos, or having too many devices accessing the network. I would NOT recommend this hotel for business travelers because I am certain that video chatting would simply not have been possible. Perhaps I'm being too hard on them, but their internet service cannot provide the features most Americans are accustomed to having. I can only imagine how frustrating this would be for guests with more devices than we had. So, this is really a mixed review. There were aspects we were very happy with, and other things we weren't. Again, family friendly place, and great location to the various attractions in the area. We would recommend this hotel, but book with your eyes open.
This hotel is centrally located to many of the activities and sites in the Black Hills. The room was very clean and well decorated. Although it wasn't horrible, Room 117 is right next to the ice machine and laundromat, so extra noise could be heard. This is room is in an inside hallway, near to the restaurant and front desk. They offer a free basic breakfast, some things tasted better than others. During our summer visit the breakfast area was fairly crowded. They don't have everything set up to be as efficient as possible. We used the fitness center, which has a treadmill, bike, and elliptical machine. Pretty basic. It doesn't open until 7:00am. The front desk personnel were very friendly and helpful. They even let me put my ice packs in their freezer since the room fridge didn't have one. Overall, I would recommend this hotel.
We stayed in one of the "luxury suites" , it was actually pretty nice. Two bedrooms, fully equipped kitchen and living room with two sofas. Asked housekeeping for extra towels and toiletries do they were very generous. Free breakfast was good, they even had gluten go free cereal and muffins on request. Several hot items and plenty of seating. The only complaint I have was check out, I signed up for the rapid checkout, didn't happen. They could not get my receipt to print out, called the manager out to help and he/she never came out. I finally left after they said they could finish without me being there. Can guarantee you that I will be checking my statement. Was given a password and username for wifi, spotty at best. Most times it told me the maximum number of sets were already on. I would stay here again, hotel was clean and overall experience was great.
My main reason for 4 of 5 stars is because of our dinner the first night we arrived. After waiting for 20 minutes to get seated it took another 20 minutes to get our menus and water. After another 20 to 30 minutes Then we watched our food order being given to the table that arrived shortly after us. I received 1/2 of my bill but I would not recommend coming here for dinner. There was 7 of us so the luxury suite in Hill City was a perfect fit. The (2) bedrooms had a queen bed, tv, small dresser, closet and ceiling fan. There's a 2nd bathroom sink outside the bathroom which was a nice addition. The suite is detached from the main hotel but this isn't an issue unless you can't climb a few steps (4) to get to your room. The hotel offers free wifi, however, the max amount had already been connected when we tried to connect. The staff was very courteous and the room was spacious and very clean. I'd stay here again but i wouldn't plan on eating dinner.
Our room was very, very clean. The premises were also outstanding with a really nice pet area. The location is great to Mount Rushmore, Crazy Horse Monument and Custer State Park. Location was great also to ride up to Deadwood and riding through Spearfish Canyon.
This was a wonderful place to stay in the Black Hills. Spent 2 nights here. Very clean, quiet property. Breakfast was well stocked and they change some of the items from day to day. Front desk staff very friendly. I would recommend this hotel if you are visiting Rushmore/Custer/Black Hills area. My family very much enjoyed our stay here.
We stayed here for 3 nights and could not have been more pleased. We had a big room with very comfortable bed(s), everything clean. Staff was friendly and helpful, breakfast was excellent every day with a big selection, slightly different each time. We did have dinner here every evening - once they had a buffet for us (we were with a big group), and it was nice, plenty of food and no problems. The coffee was always good. The last evening there was some sort of glitch with dinner - not sure if someone didn't show up or what, but we had to wait a really long time to be served, and another long time to get our food. We ordered fajitas to share, and there really wasn't quite enough for 2 people, and no sides came with it. However, it tasted fine and since everything else was so great, no complaints! They have a nice outdoor pool, but it was lightning all around the one evening we could have tried it out, so didn't. There's also an indoor pool but we didn't try it either. Also a nice seating area outside, and we sat out there a long time before the lightning got too close. They have a big gift shop with lots of clothes and jewelry, also an espresso/dessert counter with what looked like yummy cheesecake etc. It's in a beautiful area and not too far from the Main Street area. Would most definitely stay here again.
Clean and comfortable, very friendly staff, breakfast was very good with an abundance to chose from. Indoor, outdoor pools were wonderful everything was so clean, beds comfortable. The only thing I would not recommend is eating at the restaurant for dinner, portions were small and meal was not very good.
The staff at the Best Western Golden Spike Inn and Suites are very professional, our room was clean, and smelled fresh. Only had one problem and that was at the restaurant. I have Celiac Disease and when I ordered a salad without croutons, the server only removed croutons from the salad, and I had a severe reaction to the gluten. I immediate went to both the hotel and restaurant managers and let them know. From the hotel we visited Badlands National Park, Mt. Rushmore National Park, Crazy Horse Memorial, Custer State Park, Black Hills National Forest, and Jewel Cave National Park. The hotel is situated in a magnificent setting, can see bald eagles and ospreys soaring overhead
This is a well presented, comfortable BW. Hill City is a great location for Rushmore & Custer State Park & this hotel suits the area. We were in the main block, near the back. Quiet, good nights' sleep as well as an ample breakfast. Also, near enough to walk to the restaurants in Main Street.
This was my first stay at this hotel. The staff was very friendly and professional. They went out of their way to make our stay great. Our suite was very clean and large. The breakfast at this hotel was really good and the breakfast area was really large and very inviting. I would highly recommend this hotel.
Stayed 7 nights. Some of this is my fault, if I had read up on things better I would have seen that this was a pet friendly hotel. Well they allow pets. We happened to be next to someone with a dog and yes you can hear the barking and the owner telling the dog to be quiet. Hotel is OK, nothing to rave about. Each room floor plan is however terrible. When you walk into the room the washing area, sink, is right there so you either open the door into or onto your spouse and you potentially expose them for all to see. I never saw a floor plan like this before. Usually the sink tube and toilet are all in the same private room. Not here. Indoor pool not used but looked nice. Jacquzie way to many chemicals. Buffet Breakfast was good however diner there was terrible, from the food to the service.
We took a family trip to the black hills and stayed at the black hills luxury suites which is part of the best westerns, just not attached to the main building. The suites had 2 br/1ba, and a kitchen. The room decor was kind of outdated, but for 150/night it was fine since we hardly stayed at the hotel anyways. We were able to cook for ourselves and recieved daily complimentary breakfast. The kitchen was stocked with utensils and dishes. We didn't know it would be stocked and bought disposable. The only thing that could use an upgrade would be the pool and fitness room. The fitness room had 3 treadmills and the pool was kind of small. Overall my family enjoyed our stay.
This was a good choice for us to stay as it was a central location to visit the area attractions. The main attractions, Mt. Rushmore and Crazy Horse, were only about 15 mins. away. The service and rooms were good, meeting our needs during our stay.
There is not one bad thing I can say about this hotel. The 2 bedroom suite with kitchenette was spacious and clean. Staff was courteous. Food in the restaurant was very good, as well as the free hot breakfast.
We stayed for 7 nights in a suite on the 3rd floor. We really enjoyed our stay and the staff was very nice. Breakfast included really helped-- always some form of eggs, hot/cold cereal, waffles, fruit. The suite was large with two queens, and a living room with tv and sofa/chair, and kitchen area with microwave, small refrigerator, sink. The only slight drawback was the door between the bedroom and living area is two folding doors with slats, so noises carry. Also enjoyed the indoor pool which opened at 7 for early morning swim. The lobby is staffed 24-hours a day for any other needs.
Hotels are hotels, some god, some not so good. But this one went above and beyond to make your stay great. Very nice room, great pool and hot tub, very good breakfast and a staff that work to make your stay an enjoyable one.
We have stayed at over 60 BWs in the US and this was the cleanest, had large rooms. and the best breakfast and is centrally located in the Black Hills. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at BW Golden Spike in Hill City SD
nice place good breakfast family and pet friendly would stay again great staff great location right in the middle of the black hills 7to 10 mile to all outer activites loved the train ride from town great food recomondations from staff nice shops in town
Overall a good experience. Have noted on hotel's questionnaire that there was a pounding sound in our suite from the room above, apparently because the structure is wood. Makes for a less pleasant stay. Otherwise a good hotel; well maintained, clean and attractive. Breakfast was good, dining room nice.
We had the worst service we've ever experienced at the restaurant. My family had finished their meals and mine still hadn't come. The waiter brought one water for my three girls, refilled my 'bottomless coffee' once and only 2/3 full, charged us $3.99 for a 'side of broccoli' which turned out to be raw celery and generally displayed a lackluster attitude and ability to serve as a waiter. The indoor and outdoor pools were great, clean and enjoyed by my kids. Rooms were dark and dingy and the floors seemed to be constructed of thin plywood, every step was magnified for the unfortunate people staying below us. Would not stay here again.
This hotel is a great pet-friendly option in the Mt Rushmore area. We stayed here when driving across county. Despite getting in very late the friendly staff quickly got us into a room that was spacious and clean. There is a restaurant on site and a coffee kiosk.
It is a beautiful place to stay in Hill City. All places are near access to the Best Westen Suites. Rooms are very specious, clean, friendly staff and much more. Awesome Service, location and weather in Summer. privacy for family suite is great.
This hotel has everything you need if you are staying in Hill City We were here to take the 1880 Steam Train and found this hotel to be quite nice. Good sized rooms, guiet with helpful staff. Their breakfast was ok. The pool area was great-two big pools and one hot tub. Really a nice place to stay.
This hotel was in a great location for exploring the sights in the area. Clean, friendly staff. within walking distance of the town and restaurants. We spent 3 days and could really have spent more time as there is so much to see and do.
Extremely clean room and very comfortable. Great pool, hot tub and excellent breakfast in the morning. Plenty of seating room and plenty of great food and service. A great value with young kids in the morning. Centrally located and a great and friendly staff. I would stay here again in a heart beat. One of the best stays I have had in a hotel in awhile. I have stayed in alot of higher end hotels and this one is right up there where it counts.
We brought our two border collies with us, and we were thrilled that there was a large grassy area to run them. We were able to take them out on the pet friendly patio for breakfast. Breakfast was ho hum; would have liked more fresh fruit. We also left towels on the floor per instructions for fresh ones, only to find no new ones, just the ones we hadn't used. Liked that we could open our window for wonderful fresh SD spring air; didn't like that the window wouldn't lock when we went out. Great location for Mt. Rushmore, Crazy Horse, Mammoth Site & Custer State Park.
We have stayed at this Best Western Golden Spike Inn twice. Each time we received outstanding service and a very cleanly room. We used the pool and hot tub. Very clean. The outside of the hotel is very clean. We will definitely stay at this hotel if we are in this area again.
hill city is very central to a load of attractions. we used this city as our base and the best western was perfect for that. hill city is within walking distance of the hotel, its very clean and well run
We were really pleased with our stay here. The location is very convenient to visit Mt. Rushmore, Crazy Horse Memorial, etc. We have a great dinner just done the street, and found our little town quite friendly and convenient.
Stayed 4 nights in their Suite A room. It was very well kept and clean, and large enough for my big family. The staff was friendly and helpful. The free breakfast is restaurant style - you sit and order from a menu with limited options. The last morning was buffet style which was a nice change of pace. The breakfast hostess Stephanie was a throwback - she is what you imagine if you were at a 50s diner. She doted on my kids, told stories, and was a great source of knowledge for getting to the sights. Wifi has good signal but is sluggish at times. Would have to login in frequently.
This is an interesting place. The layout and services are a little different from other Best Westerns, but that's not a bad thing. For spending time in the Back Hills, this place makes a great jumping off point. It's located such that most of what you want to see is not too far away. The hotel is clean and well kept. Front desk staff are friendly and helpful. One thing that's really different is breakfast. They make a hot breakfast to-order for you from a short menu. The ladies who run this show are a hoot - you'll love them. Another interesting note - we stayed in room 258, which is located right by the elevator, stairs, and ice maker. This is usually a very bad place to be, but we had total quiet in our room two nights in a row. One last note - the on-site restaurant wasn't open during our early May visit. Don't know when it opens so if it's important, ask when you book. Overall it's a good place. I don't think you'll be disappointed.
Best to order breakfast, professional and friendly staff, great location, clean rooms, pet friendly. I highly recommend this property. We are very picky when it comes to clean rooms and good locations. We didn't have the best view out our window however this hotel met all our needs.
What a great location! The room was wonderful - roomy and comfortable. The hot breakfast (free) was pretty good - the lady working in the restaurant, Stephanie, was really great! The night we stayed, there was a fire on a nearby hill (Storm Hill) and we could see it from our room window. The only downside would be that the staff at the hotel didn't seem to know how to get information about whether we should be on alert for evacuation or not and didn't seem very helpful. Also, we had a room with a sofa bed and it was not made up for us and there wasn't even bedding included for it - we had to ask for it and it seemed an inconvenience to the guy working.
After spending a lot of time vacationing in the area, had always wanted to stay here. Definitely not disappointed. The staff was very friendly, helpful and welcoming. They greeted my dog with warmth and made her feel as much at home as I was. Accommodations were clean and quiet, which meant oversleeping one morning. Best part was breakfast, they cook to order versus buffet style. Would stay here again!
It was a great experience and hope to have our guest stay there in June 24, 2017 for our daughter's wedding..I would stay again when I come back to finalize any plans for the wedding too. The pool was great, the food was awesome and the customer service was excellent
I would highly recommend this hotel for anyone staying the Black Hills area. The town of Hill City is delightful and not quite as "touristy" as some of the other small towns. The staff at the hotel was extremely friendly and helpful. We had an excellent room which was clean and roomy. I will definitely stay here again if in the Black Hills area again. There was a free breakfast which was more than adequate. Also has an indoor pool.
Great place to stay, nice room, great staff, great cost. We couldn't get a BW in Hot Springs and stayed here. So glad we did. Stephanie was great with breakfast and giving us insight where to look for property. Ryan handled a problem that we had one night. Everything was great. Going back again in July.
Went to Mount Rushmore and arrived late in the evening. Most of the motels in the area were closed for the season but was happy to find that this hotel was open. Booked my stay online and was very happy with it. The hotel was very clean and up to date. Staff was very friendly. Was very surprised to find out in the morning that breakfast was served to you and you I didn't have to prepare my on meal. Will stay here again when I return to the area.
The hotel was very nice, and clean. Well maintained and cared for. I was concerned about the noise level we would have as we were next door to the pool, but we had no issues. Very impressed at that. This was our first visit to South Dakota and we were not aware how much of it would be closed, even in April. We were however hugely disappointed that even though the website indicated that there was a restaurant on site, and the info in our room said that the restaurant was open until 9 pm, and even signage outside indicating restaurant. Not until we walked in the main door asking where the restaurant was, were we told that it was closed. So disappointing and hard to find food when so many places were closed. Thankful for the close grocery store having cold fried chicken. Great meal for our anniversary. To make up for it, the breakfast buffet was great. The staff running the buffet were delightful and did a great job and went out of their way to make sure you had everything you needed.
Stayed for a marriage retreat held at the hotel. It was a great breakfast and the rooms were comfy. Nice pool area though I never got in. Exercise room was small (elliptical, treadmill and stationary bike) but in good shape. Good location in Hill City right off of HWY 16. If you stay make sure and get dinner at the Alpine inn just a few blocks away.
This was our 4th night on our trip across country. We arrived in Hill City after visiting Mt. Rushmore and had time to go out to dinner. The suite was spacious, quiet, and clean. The bed was comfortable. Breakfast was your typical hot continental and it did it's job. The staff was very friendly and helpful. We'd stay here again.
Our visit was very impromptu but ended up more than pleasant. The Hotel had only been open a few weeks for the season. So many others were not open yet. They have very nice large clean rooms, a super nice pool area and the breakfast was a huge surprise! Very good.
The hotel was what you would expect of a Best Western, but the staff was excellent. It was the off season so there were not a lot of guests, which made the stay even better. A very good coffee bar (Seattle's Best), and because of the limited number of guests, the staff waited on you at breakfast-so there was not the usual buffet.
Our room was clean and the staff was very helpful with extra towels, coffee, soap, etc. Bed and pillows were comfortable. Breakfast was freshly made to order and the servers were very friendly. Good location centrally located between Custer State Park and Mount Rushmore.
Nice enough hotel. Staff can be a bit...odd. They lock the door from the hotel into the lobby after a certain time as an example. Breakfast is in the restaurant in the morning. Parking is out front. Some rooms are inside and some outside facing. They have the oddest gift shop area selling purses and designer clothes. Seemed a bit strange to me. On the other hand everyone was nice and the place clean and I got a good nights rest. Stayed for a day to tour the area and cannot complain about anything. Hotel is nicely situated to hit all of the surrounding area and made the center of an activity circle for us. Rather nice. A good hotel in a good location
We really enjoyed our stay and were able to take some time to enjoy the amenities during the workshop including the exercise room (older equipment), pool and hot tub. The suits are spacious, clean and quiet. It is a lovely setting near Mount Rushmore.
The staff on duty have to work all positions: front desk, gift shop, dessert stand, and restaurant. The same guy who checked us in, served us dinner in the restaurant, and then later made our dessert at the dessert stand. The restaurant is very affordable and the food is quite tasty! In fact we ate here every night during our stay! They offer free breakfast but if you wanted other options you can order breakfast items from their restaurant for a nominal fee. The room was spacious and clean. Our king size bed was very comfortable and had more than enough pillows. The chair in the room is quite awkward though. Too big to sit comfortably in yet too small to cuddle up on. It has a slide out foot rest, but the back doesn't recline so the positioning is just off. The hotel is in an awesome location. It is nearby to all of the attractions such as Mount Rushmore and Custer State Park and it is just a short drive to Rapid City. It also has a large supermarket right next door! I would definitely stay here again the next time I'm in the area!
We had traveled over 2K miles to see Crazy Horse Memorial and were told to stay in Hill City instead of Sioux Falls and were so glad we did....It was mid Oct and we found many business closed for the winter, including the dining room at the motel but here was a historical restaurant and bar right next door within walking distance that we ate at. The Motel did individual HOT breakfasts , cooked to order that were great, the staff very friendly, especially the gentleman at the front desk. Highly recommend to anyone. It is within 10 minutes of the Crazy Horse and only about 20 minutes for Mt.Rushmore-PERFECT LOCATION.
excellent location for seeing Mount Rushmore, Custer National park, Crazy Horse and the Black hills. We had the 2 room suite with a fireplace and the room was wonderful. Friendly staff. Free breakfast. The only issue with our stay was that everything in town closes at 8PM so if you need to eat after that you will not have hot food. This is no reflection on the Hotel.. The pool is amazing. We had 2 granddaughters with us and they loved the pool. Highly recommend this hotel.
We thought this motel was excellent. We got a room with a king size bed and it was a nice room. No noise from other rooms. The breakfast was wonderful best we have ever had at a motel. Staff was very accommodating.
we had a very enjoyable time and especially enjoyed the pleasant staff every where we went. The Breakfast at the Golden Spike in Hill City, was exceptional and the wait staff was very helpful and to think it was included with the price of the Motel. Really glad to be centrally located so we didn.t have to pack up every morning.
The room and the loby were very clean and the staff was pleasant and helpful. It is off season and the restaurant let you order breakfast instead of having a buffet. We would definately stay there again. What a great suprise.
This hotel is great. Room was very clean and spacious. Pet friendly! Front desk staff is very helpful and friendly. There is a complementary breakfast that is out of this world. They give you a menu and you are waited on. No trying to handle plate and dodge people. Very relaxing breakfast before getting on the road.
We stayed here for four nights while we rode the entire Mickelson Trail over three days. This hotel was excellent. Rooms were spacious and clean, and the breakfasts were nicer than most hotel breakfasts, both in food and place to eat. This hotel did little things well, like the car & bike cleaning station with water, rags, etc. The location was great for getting into town, and it was quite close to the Mickelson trail, too. The only problem we had was with the wi-fi. It was really slow and cumbersome to use. Probably the slowest we've ever encountered in a hotel. Aside from the wi-fi, thought, this place was great for our purposes!
This facility was in a great location with a high quality facility and staff. It was centrally located for our vacation in the Black Hills, had all the amenities we desired and was a reasonably good value compared against other options in the area. We would definitely stay there again and would recommend this facility to anyone.
2 queens close to the office and restraint this pet friendly hotel is 8 miles to crazy horse and 8 miles to Mount Rushmore and Custer state park close by it is the ideal location to visit the Black Hills of South Dakota several wineries and a local brewery near by make it a comfortable location. we got upgraded to a suite at no cost to us made for a very enjoyable visit.
The Hotel and staff are excellent. Breakfast menu was one of the best our family has ever had. Rooms are clean and if you're traveling with pets this is the place, they have a very nice pet area and in the early morning you may see a deer or two roaming the property.
We stayed 3 nights. The staff were professional and the hotel was very clean. The beds were comfortable. Breakfast was a nice bonus as we couldn't wait to eat first thing and then get out to visit all of the sites. Gorgeous area and a perfect central location for visiting all of the attractions.
We have eight people in our family, and it is rare that we are able to find a hotel room to accommodate all of us. I loved the big family suite that was available, and that was the main reason we decided to stay there. We were happy with the cleanliness of the room, and we were happy with the complimentary breakfast each morning. The staff was friendly and helpful.
I've stayed at this facility many times and I'm always very satisfied with the room, the restaurant, and the customer care that the staff displays. It's in the heart of the Black Hills and close to many attractions, yet the town of Hill City has that small town feel to it.
We stayed 4 nights at this hotel and were impressed by quality, cleanliness and especially the friendliness of the personnel. The location is ideal to visit all major attractions in the neighbourhood; two suggestions however: a bit more variety for bfst for people who stay more than 1 night and the option for different sizes of pillows as they are the same in all Best Westerns.Highly recommended.
We enjoyed our stay because of the professional staff, clean room & on site resteraunt. The value for the rate charged was very good. We would stay here again & will suggest them to our friends. The cheesecake was excellent !
While visiting the Black Hills / Rushmore in mid-October, we found this to be perfect for us. The kids loved the pool and the suites had lots of room for our large family. The breakfast was very good with plenty of seating. Rooms and hotel was very clean, comfortable, and pleasant. I would stay again.
Quick and helpful check in. I needed a little help to connect to wifi and Dennis at the front desk was very helpful. They have a very nice complimentary breakfast . . The pool and hot tub were also very nice. We would stay here again!
Four ladies on a road trip wanted nice clean, affordable accommodations near monuments and events near Hill City. We were very pleased with the staff at check in that worked "creatively" to get us two connecting rooms. The set up was perfect since it allowed us free access between the rooms for visiting in the evening after we enjoyed the events and sight seeing in Custer State Park. The internet was free and relatively fast. The rooms were big and clean with comfy beds. The complementary free breakfast in a clean dining area was a definite plus. Good coffee, yummy hot oatmeal, eggs, waffles, etc. breakfast menu items with a friendly waitstaff. We would definitely stay here in again when we return to Hill City.
For under $100 a night, we stayed a few miles from Mount Rushmore. The grounds are beautiful, the room was spacious clean, and updated, and the people are extremely nice. They have a cafe (although we did not eat there), and an espresso bar. Easy access, clean, comfortable, and 15 mins from the National Park. I don't think you could beat this place in terms of total package.
Very nice hotel. The room was big and very clean. The only problem we encountered was at check in were the employee wasn't very polite and seemed like he didn't really want to be doing this type of work. Other wise everything went just fine.
The Golden Spike Inn and Suites was a great Hotel to stay in. It was Clean and the staff were very Friendly. We had a family reunion there and they worked with us to get rooms together and made it very pleasant. We will no doubt stay here again when in the area.
The hotel was clean but the air conditioning was awful. The fan was so loud we had to choose between watching TV or having the air conditioning on. It was very difficult to adjust the temperature - it was either freezing or hot. We did contact the front desk and someone came up to the room but gave up after 20 minutes of trying to adjust the unit. He couldn't change our room because the hotel was completely booked. After trying to get the manager to call us back we finally reached him the day after we checked out. He basically told us that there was nothing he could do and we should have reported it earlier. I explained we were out sightseeing all day - he was totally unresponsive. We won't stay there again - and will think twice about staying in any Best Westerns. Also it is located at the end of town so unless you want to eat in their restaurant you will need to drive into town. I think Best Western is becoming a budget hotel.
