The room was clean and well maintained. Make sure you have your key card on you for your room. You have to scan it to get into the building where your room is and they have a wrought iron fence and gate that if you come in after 9 pm you have to scan your room key.
We have stayed at this Best Western repeatedly and are always very satisfied with our stay. The hotel is very clean and quiet, staff is very friendly and for us it is conveniently located. It will always be our stay on our way through Bakersfield.
Be aware that this Best Western Plus charges for the breakfast $10 per person. We choose Best Western Plus because of the free breakfast. We did not buy the breakfast so I cannot give a review. But just be aware if that is something your looking for. Also the hallway and stairwell were really dirty. We were worried that the rooms would be the same but they were clean . Don't think we would stay at this hotel again.
Dirty towels in the closet, room was 86 on check in and never got under 71 in 3 days. Manager warned me not to complain..... to anyone but her!! Have stayed here many times before and it is getting a little worse every month. I am a business traveler and stay in hotels 100+ nights a year, WiFi is poor (most malware and virus programs will warn you not to connect) and signal is timed so it just shuts down after a while- pretty tough on a business traveler. Room AC is on a occupancy sensor- front desk will advise you to move around every 5 minutes so it doesn't shut off...? This is my last visit here.
This was a quiet comfortable experience. The staff was kind and helpful, very accommodating. The breakfast was pretty good, and they had never ending fabulous coffee and tea. The hotel is in close proximity to the convention center, only a short walk.
We chose this place due to the reviews. Our usual brand hotels reviews were absolutely awful! I am so glad the reviews were spot on. The room was immaculate. Sheets, pillows were clean and comfortable. The room must have been sound proof. We didn't hear any outside noises. Air-conditioned was cold, which was perfect...especially when it was 104° outside. I normally take photos, but didn't this time. The website photos are accurate. Highly recommended from this couple.
The room was dirty especially the bathroom, with hairs in the bathtub, it looked like the housekeeper doesnt do a good job at cleaning the room. The manager should make sure housekeepers are cleaning properly, We stayed 1 night we were so tired, it was over 100 degree weather and ac wasnt working it was either full blast cold or we had to shut it off completely. All we wanted was to rest because our car broke down in the middle of our trip. We left very early never coming back. Photos to show how disgusting it was.
Good place to stay, very comfortable beds and good freshly cooked breakfast. Very friendly staff. Very accommodating as regards our requirement for a ground floor accessible room. Easy to park and unload the car. Secure car park at night.
This hotel is right in the heart of downtown and next to some of the most popular restaurants and convention centers it offers quite and comfy rooms and has an outstanding staff that are ready to help you the night stay was delightful and comfortable do highly recommend this hotel
We have stayed here a few times over the years. Staff is friendly, and the rooms are clean and spacious. The parking has limited access so safety is not a concern.
The hotel is a great value for the money. The pool is great and the rooms are clean and sufficiently stocked with amenities like coffee and tea. They also have a coffee and tea machine free for guests in the main lobby. My family and I always enjoy the great pool and simple but sufficient exercise room.
On the edge of downtown, this hotel is clean, and well maintained. The design approach is fun and professional. Staff is friendly and welcoming. Quiet area and close to the train station. Excellent value.
We stayed here on the first night of our cross-country road trip. Good basic hotel. Clean and comfortable, pet-friendly. I did tell them the room smelled of mildew (or air filters need to be changed?), and received a response from management.
If you have allergies or asthma, RUN. The entire place has a disgustingly strong/heavy smell. It's almost like a bottle of cologne was dumped everywhere. We were confused as to why the place smelled so strongly, until we got into our rooms and could immediately smell mold. We immediately opened the window & ran the fan, but it did not do much.
It was a great stay. Great rate florear location accesible to all activities dinner movies pool definitely recommend this location if your ever in Bakersfield. I always stay here when I visit
This place is suppose to be a Plus but is closer to being a SureStay. Just the fact that they want to charge an extra $10 for breakfast completely turned me off. I stay at BW about 50 to 60 times a year and I am in their top tier and this is the most ridiculous place I have stayed. Also, I am not fond of the places that allow pets. The stairs were pretty dirty. The room was just OK. Do yourself a favor and stay somewhere else.
The staff was friendly and kind. Welcomed by a nice employee. Woke up first morning and there was a roach on the wall. Thought it was a spider and didn't bother me until I went to remove it and it was a roach. Let the front desk know of the bug and he offered me to switch rooms. Nice offer but who knows what is in other rooms. Declined and just asked for the room to be thoroughly cleaned. Also weird there was only one way in and one way out. Walking or driving.
Clean, quiet, comfy, spacious. Standard amenities of in room coffee, refrig, microwave. Good free WiFi.Got great price, $50 off with BW coupon.
We stay at the BW every time we drive through Bakersfield. The location is perfect for our trips. The hotel is clean and comfortable. I would always recommend this Best Western.
Unable to access BW reward site so we called hotel directly and told them I was handicapped and they gave us a ground floor room. Friendly and helpful staff. Greeted us every morning with a smile. Nice
First allow me to start with the front desk guest services. Impeccable! They are kind, welcoming and elegant. Even in the face of hecklers, they maintained a demeanor that was consistently poised and kind. When checking into the room, the cleanliness is immaculate. At most hotels they usually distribute little teeny tiny soaps, shampoos and conditioners, that if someone with long or a lot of hair would have to ask for a bunch. However at Best Western Plus they had full dispensers of body wash, soap and conditioner that smelt so good. It did not feel or smell cheap. The pricing was very fair, it did NOT feel like they were in the business to grab money from peoples pockets. It felt as though they have established a homey and comforting environment for everyone that is away from home. The property is clean and the staff are so friendly and easy to talk to. Also just as important, the coffee was so good. It is easy to tell when a coffee pot has not been cleaned in a while or it is old or reused grinds.. the expresso they have in the front office was so austerely fresh that it could boost you through your whole day with one or two shots.
This place seemed a little overpriced, but the staff was very friendly and helpful. The room was clean and comfortable. The breakfast was ok, but I expected a little more out of a BW Plus. We would stay there again. The workout room was pretty small and cramped
Our stay at the BW Hill House was very pleasant. It was clean, the people were friendly and helpful. Breakfast at the small Mexican restaurant was delicious, we had the breakfast burrito and it was delicious. We will stay there again next week and every time we should find ourselves in Bakersfield.
Please help with the acount made booking same day and cx with in min but was not able to cx pleade help I will really appreciated Try to call the hotel but no one ever ansemwer and jaut Try to call customer service and was referred to send email or just call next day
My wife and I stayed in a ground floor room with our dog. It was great-spacious (we had a queen bed), clean, well appointed, and well priced. The hostess, Sweetu, was very friendly and helpful. We stayed two nights a week apart. Sweetu remembered us upon our return! And made our stay very enjoyable. We had breakfast both mornings before our departures and they were good.
The mattress needs to be switched around because the side that is closest to the lamp sags and is uncomfortable. You cannot turn on the light in the bathroom without the noisy fan going on. There is no list of tv channels or instructions for the microwave . I was surprised to find out that for a Best Western Plus you have to pay an extra $10.00 for breakfast and you could not get breakfast until 7:30 in the morning. The outside photo of the hotel does not represent what it actually looks like. All the downstairs rooms are for guests with pets, there is not elevator and if you have issues with your knees or you are a senior citizen you would have difficulty climbing the stairs.
Hill House allows dangerous people on property, without even a "no loitering" sign to deter them. But they do post signs warning guests that public access cannot be controlled, even though it is surrounded by a prison fence with only one entrance. So I wasn't surprised when I saw that a break-in occurred. Other less expensive hotels in this neighborhood have significant security systems and guards, but here all you get is excuses and locked gates which make things more inconvenient for guests. Even the canal gate to the cold dirty pool was locked (which is the one gate in the entire facility which might only be convenient to guests). The reason for this hotel's attitude eventually became clear, when I was solicited by a loitering vagrant who told me he was staying in a room here. It seems that the hotel benefits financially by housing vagrants (and, apparently, prostitutes). Extremely noisy people were in the hallways both nights at 2-3 am. The ice machine didn't work, and seemed to be permanently out of service, but they didn't even bother to put an out of order sign on it. For the most part the facility appears to be very nice, and their staff seems very nice, but to me that's like lipstick on a pig. I have stayed at Best Western hotels in various areas, and this was definitely the worst Best Western experience I ever had, though the hotel appearance (and cost) was above average.
Ask for a lower room in the first building for my disabled husband and was told the room keys were already made and we could not change rooms, I didn't want to argue with the rude front desk girl. I should have but she was not being nice and we needed a place to stay for the night. There is only one way in and one way out! all the gates were locked. What if there was a fire in the second building across from the bridge there would be no way out! I'm sure that is illegal you may want to check with the Fire Dept.
The hotel was average in cleanliness and amenities. Nothing exceptional about the place or service. Nothing to complain about. It was a hotel room of adequate construction, cleanliness and service. I would likely stay there again, but would never consider it a destination in and of itself.
I always try to stay in Best Western Hill House as I know the facilities will be clean and orderly, beautifully up-to-date and as I'm traveling by myself, I feel safe while staying. I highly recommend staying there.
The area was sketchy but the hotel was just as bad! The owner was rude and didn't say hello upon me arriving. The staff then put me in a room that was filthy and did not lock!!! The area was surrounded by homeless and drug addicts! I tried calling the front desk to ask about the thermostat saying error and the door the phone did not work! The lounge chair in the room was riddled with stains and what looked like human fluids smeared all over it. When I went to the front desk to ask for a safe room the girl said "oh yeah I think you have to slam that door closed." I explained I did try that and it still did not work. The next room I was put in was not as dirty. I did not feel safe here. The ice machine did not have any but a sign saying to try the next two buildings for ice. Who has time to go looking for this in 100° weather. The other guests were very noisy and slamming doors well until 2:30am. Definitely the worst Best Western stay I've had.
I have stayed a lot of places and this one, by far, is the Absolute Worst. The staff was inconsiderate that the door they were exiting was next to a guest room (mine) letting it slam at 6:30am over and over again. The pool was Nasty and the owner/GM was useless
When I went on the app and according Tripadvisor it said free breakfast. It is NOT. $10 for crappy hotel food. Be careful and read the hotel room description. If it is not listed, it is not available. I am assuming they charge for the gym too, because it is not listed on the room description. Customer service is rude. Management are obvious cheapskates in how the hotel is managed and run. Water is disgusting. To buy a bottle of water you have to call staffing to open a door to buy a water bottle from a machine. Snack vending machines are empty. I was actually starting to like Best Western and was considering to use them for my main hotel when I travel. No more. I am done with Best Western because of this place. When I go through Bakersfield again, I would sleep in my car before staying here.
We paid for our room and our BFFs room for a birthday trip to see a comedy show. I called ahead of our arrival to pre-pay for the room because I knew our friends would try to pay for their own room and I thought they might arrive before we did. The representative at the front desk said she couldn't run the card without having the physical card. I told her their cancellation policy says we will be charged if we don't show up, so why can't we pre-pay? They wouldn't have my card in that situation. I asked for the manager. She was rude as well. She gave me the same story and told me she was very busy. I had to interrupt her to get my message across because she wanted to hang up. That conversation ended with her agreeing to charge the room. We got there before our friends did and they, in fact, did not charge the room. Thank goodness we got there first. Our friends stayed in one building and we stayed in the other. I didn't see any rooms connected to the lobby. And, as someone else mentioned, the building with the water wheel is not part of the property. That was one of the deciding factors for choosing this hotel. I looked for it every time we drove over the canal (the one-car wide bridge that looks like a nice water walk) and never did see it. This place isn't worthy of the Best Western name. It was more like a cheap motel. Both buildings had an old/musty smell. The rooms were updated with a hard floor but that appeared to be the only update. The carpet in the hall leading to the rooms was tattered. The rooms don't have blackout curtains, only wooden blinds that let in a lot of light. The bathtub in our room appeared to have been refinished with a paint-type product to give it a new look. That only works until the finish wears off, which it did. We could see scratches under the "paint" where it hadn't worn off. Free breakfast is advertised, but they stopped offering it July 1st. That was one reason we chose this property. They will sell you a breakfast coupon for $10 to be used at the Mango Haus next door. We went to Donna Kaye's Diner and had a wonderful breakfast instead. Our friends found used bed sheets hidden behind the chair in the corner of their room. They were glad they brought disinfecting wipes at the last minute because they had to use them to clean wet sticky messes on the desk and counter in their room. Disgusting! There was apparently a smoker in their room because they found a cigarette burn on the table. I'm a platinum member and we were not given free bottled water as some BWs do, only a "thank you for being a platinum member" at check in. Just words. We paid $4.00 each at the vending machine for 2 bottled waters. This experience is making me rethink ever staying at a Best Western again.
Hotel called at 1pm to inform me that the ADA room I had booked 6 months prior was given away and they had a room available for us BUT one that wouldn't sleep 3 people, no roll-in shower AND the sink didn't work...but we could stay in there.. hey right!!! No way to wash hands (in a wheelchair), brush teeth, etc!!!!
Helpful staff, clean room and very comfortable bed.We stayed here for a concert at the Mechanics Bank Arena concert and the price we paid was well worth it. We will definitely stay here again and have already booked two more stays.
You will be excited to stay at this location. You will not be disappointed!!!!! When we arrived the staff was helpful. Our room was clean as well as the property. The property is protected by a nice fence.
We chose this hotel because we were attracted to the proximity to Mill Creek Park. The sound of the "creek" canal waterfall was wonderful by the pool, and the view of the mill was very appealing. However, it was difficult to access the park from the hotel, due to high fencing around the entire property. I realize that there were security issues in the area, but some card operated gates would have been helpful to access the trails along Mill Creek. The room was clean, but the air conditioning fan was quite loud.
Unfortunately, our stay wasn't great at all. We stayed in the hotel unit situated on the other side of 'the bridge' and the whole place smelled like mold, our room included. There was a sign on the AC unit that said to only use the control unit on the wall instead, but those two systems didn't talk so used the AC system directly (I told the front desk about this problem). The pool looked extremely uninviting. And, the water was not hot but barely lukewarm (another party complained about this too). There were two individuals working the front desk, and one (the manager) was a bit snippy with the customers. The neighborhood was fine though, and the new restaurant connected to the hotel, Mango Haus, was fantastic.
The Best Western Hill House is in an excellent location to the Mechanics Bank Arena. It is a clean and comfortable accommodation--at a better price value than other hotels nearby. In the past, the hotel offered a complimentary fresh-made hot breakfast to guests.
This locations idea do a breakfast is a bag with items like yogurt banana granola bar and water. If you have dietary needs stay some place else.rooms are clean but my tv didn't work correctly . Staff is nice but without power for change.
Clean room, easy access interior rooms. Bathroom cabinets could be updated but overall an affordable place to stay when in Bakersfield. Within walking distance to the arena and the courthouse. Easy access with a little drive to 5 and 99. Affordable and efficient. Not much else nearby without a car.
The room was clean, the towels were also clean, the bedsheets were clean as well and I had a great experience overall. There was no noise even though it was raining at night and check out was a breeze.
This hotel was great for our family of three — stopping halfway between Palm Springs and Oakland. It is well located with lots of places to go within walking distance. We had dinner and breakfast nearby and hit the road. The room was comfortable— good beds and the window opened. The staff was very nice and helpful. We would go back.
After making the reservations and being told that this hotel had a free complementary breakfast with the stay, come to find out that their kitchen facilities were under remodel and only got a granola bar, a bottle of water and a bruised banana in a brown paper bag. This was obviously not communicated to reservations by the hotel and so reservations was not able to tell the guest. I have come to expect hot breakfast and good to fair food from best western hotels. Had I known this I would have made reservations at another Best Western in town. Also being that we had a service dog I feel that the room was a bit out of the way and put an extra burden to move kids and Service K9 from parking lot to room. I have come to expect that with a service K9 and with kids most Best Westerns put you close to the parking lot for ease of moving a large group. Not happy with this stay
We arrived very late (after 11pm). Front desk attendant was very polite and helpful. Check-in was easy. Room was clean, spacious and comfortable. They had the heat on low already, so the temp was very comfortable upon entering, which we really appreciated. The surrounding neighborhood was quiet and clean, we felt very safe. The only reason we give 4 stars instead of 5, is because on the website it says they provide a full, hot breakfast, but in reality the are only doing grab and go bags, and because the walls are *paper thin*. We could hear the entire conversations of the people in the next room with 100% clarity. Not really a big deal, and if I could give 4.5 stars I would. We would stay here again.
This is the 2nd time we have stayed here. Beds are very comfortable, shower is adequate, Rooms are inside the building, feels secure. This is an older Best Western and is very satisfactory for a place to sleep and feel safe while there.
Updated clean quiet hotel. Near business part of town with restaurants a little bit away. Nice staff We are traveling from Oregon to Arizona so this was a nice stopping place. On this Sunday after Thanksgiving, the roads were crowded so driving a little more stressful than normal so it was nice to have a comfortable place to crash.
The decor of the room was excellent. I was expecting something else and was totally blown away. The bed was so comfortable I instantly fell asleep. The pillows were so fluffy. I will definitely stay here again!
Responsive front desk who assisted locating on line mountain pass reports and updated me on pass closures. Offering Clean, Comfortable, quiet rooms that are quite adequate. I would stay again, but not recommend to anyone looking for updated, pristine accommodations.
This property charges $30 per pet, $60 for our two small dogs! no dog area we could find. Hot breakfast although the bag breakfast was ok with fruit, bottle of water, breakfast bar. We will not stay here again
Hotel is convenient for concerts. We took the train, walked across to the hotel, walked to 18th street for dinner and then walked to the arena. The hotel was clean and the front desk clerk was very nice. We wished the restaurant next door had been open but it's bring remolded.
Booked a reservation with BringFido and came in from Highway 99. Drove through what appears to be a sketchy part of town. Arrived at location and saw a fence around the parking lot and a gate. Not promising. Do you lock the gate at night I asked? “No” was the reply. Why do you have a gate then? Well, people check-in late. Very safe part of town we were told. Then why have a fence and gate? Checked in and was told to take everything of value out of the car. No can do. Moving to another state for 4 months. Not a lot of cars in the parking lot. Wife did not feel safe in this area so we left to book a room at the La Quinta Inn by the airport.
Clean up to date room. Felt safe on property. Staff is excellent. Although, I didn't bring my little dog...I saw that hotel is pet friendly. I've stayed at Hill House several times over the years. Only downside for me was not enough T.V. channels, but I can live with that.
A pleasant surprise,. A short walk from the Amtrak bus/train station. We were on route from San Francisco to Las Vegas. Rooms very comfortable and clean. Ice machine in hallway. Check in staff very helpful. Felt safe Bagged breakfast supplied. Short walk to restaurants. These Australians would stay again.
The room was big, we had an end room, so we had a sliding glass door, which was extremely convenient for loading and unloading your vehicle! Room was clean, bed was comfortable, they have a pool, but no hot tub. Our bagged breakfast was actually very good: Yogurt, banana, granola bar, muffins, coffee, etc. The staff was very nice, very helpful. We'd stay again!
First time at the Hill House in Bakersfield. I was very happy with the room, property and pool. The beds were comfortable, the room was clean & air conditioning was perfect and the staff was super friendly and welcoming. As always.... thank you Best Western!
Room was nice as always although I did have to move to the middle of the bed as the mattress was starting to breakdown on the outside. Barking dog next door and arguing couple next door were a minor annoyance. First time in like 10 stays that I have ever heard anything through the walls. Not a dealbreaker as you never know who is checking in if you run a hotel.
The guest room was clean, comfortable and quiet. The room furnishings have been updated. The desk staff was friendly and efficient. We travel to Bakersfield a few times per year and we would stay here again.
I've stayed here twice and I love this place. Quaint and comfortable. Friendly staff. Food is...okay. The rooms are comfortable and homey. Too bad they don't serve beer. The pool was still open, which was nice.
This hotel had bed bugs that left my friend with marks up and down her body. And the door barely locked and could be pushed right open. Not safe and bad service at front desk. Plus their to go breakfast was trash. Do not stay here.
I stop at this hotel on my way up to Northern California at least 6 times a year for the past 7 years. They never disappoint. Even during COVID they went out of their way to make sure my stay was perfect. A great check-in experience with the front desk staff and the manager is really nice. She even members my name, not many hotels can say that and I am on the road a lot. The rooms are always clean and the breakfast cooked hot in the restaurant is fantastic. Obviously I hight recommend this hotel.
My room was clean and the grounds were clean. The location is good but their are homeless people close by. Just don't walk around at night. There was plenty of parking. The restaurant next door went out of business. My only issue is they don't serve breakfast. Instead they give you a to go bag with water, yogurt, granola bar, and doughnuts. I wasn't expecting this.
Good unfortunate no hot breakfast. No variety for breakfast only bag to go. Rooms clean. Have dispenser for soap, shampoo and so on... wish matress thicker my friend said it was ok. Wish had a better remote control for tv
Wonderful, comfortable clean safe hotel.i would recommend this Best Western to everyone, what a great place located in a great neighborhood.this hotel offers a safe stay in the downtown heart of Kern county
The pool and bedroom facilities were great. Excellent value in terms of space and facilities as usually provided with a Best Western Plus. It was however a jarring episode when we went for breakfast. It was a Dickensian experience by comparison. You are firstly allocated a voucher by reception. Your key card and name aren't suitable here. There is a unique arrangement of coffee and tea being allocated in an entirely separate location. Like a game, you are expected to go on hunt. You have to walk a lengthy corridor in the opposite direction across the front desk and down to a separate section. Past a lounging area before you can reach a coffee decanter. For some reason these portal thermal jugs must remain in this specific area. Power points don't appear to be the issue for the separate location. You are also rewarded with three types of coffee mate for your efforts. Once you make your way back. You can have one Orange juice. Attempt to ask for more and you will reenact the orphanage scene from Oliver Twist. It appears to be incredibly valuable form of concentrated juice. It is held in the back out of sight and the usual expectation is that you are allocated one cardboard cup. You are given a choice of burrito or continental vegan diets aren't advertised. Be careful of the potatoes if you chose burritos. Some of the chunks are still fresh from the ground and didn't have chance to be fully boiled. Do not expect eat anything on a plate either. They prefer single use cardboard. In summary this Best Western Plus breakfast experience was a Best Western Minus for us.
My neighborhood had a power outage and we needed a room to get out of the heat. It was after 2am when we were driving around trying to find a room. After stopping at 2 other places we came to Hill House. The night clerk was so nice and helped us right away. The room was clean and was a life saver for our last minute needs.
This was our third stay at Best Western Hill House. Even though it is an older facility, it has been maintained very well. A full breakfast is offered with the room, but we did not take advantage of it as we had our meals with Family in the area. The room was clean, and very quiet. The staff was friendly and very attentive to our needs. The price was reasonable. I would recommend this facility to anyone staying in Bakersfield.
The Bestwestern Hillhouse is amazing. The rooms are nice, the beds and pillows are comfortable, and the water in the shower is hot! The staff members are wonderful. I so appreciate Andrew and Sierra. The owner's wife and her sister were so kind. The attached Mexican restaurant has great food as well! I will continue to stay here weekly until September.
This is very close to the convention centre and other hotels. However it is on the edge of the 'bad' part of town.. Staff are very friendly. The hotel is gated and therfore very safe. The hotel is not new, but very clean. The rooms were very large and actually good. Nice decor and a very comfortable bed. Breakfast is odd... it is at the attached casa de mariscos. You wait outside, order taken, then you either sit or take away... it feels berry "budget", however, the food is tasty
Stay was good as usual. Nice clean rooms, comfortable beds, everyone at the front desk was kind and friendly. Hallways could use more carpet. The restaurant attached to the hotel is pretty good also. Get he verde nachos and a Cadillac Margarita
Clean, fair-priced hotel right across the street from Mechanics Bank Arena. Friendly staff and easy checkin/out. I would gladly stay again. Much better price than the Marriott across the street. Secure, gated parking.
We spent one night. The room was clean, quiet and very comfortable. The wi-fi was fast. The breakfast was an actual meal at the adjoining restaurant. It was tasty and quick. This will be go to hotel in Bakersfield.
We have stayed here twice and appreciate the courteous front desk service and the overall cleanliness of the rooms and public spaces. The location is ideal for us as we attend a conference held near the downtown area. It's also wonderful that we can walk along Mill Creek for our morning walk!
One of the nicest and cleanest Best Western we have stayed in. Front desk was very friendly and helpful. Room was extra large, had a desk and chair and a small sofa. Would definitely stay there again. Restaurant on property and did a great breakfast that was take out.
Property is so filthy!! Homeless people everywhere. In a seedy part of town. No elevators. The breakfast is not like the other BW properties. They give you three choices and a 8 oz cup of orange juice. You have to wait outside for the person to come out to take your order. Then you wait again for the person to hand you your breakfast. Definitely would encourage people NOT to use this facility. Does not represent the BW name at all.
The location seemed to be in a quiet area of Bakersfield. The entrance hallway and stairs were worn out and dirty, but the room was nice and the staff were helpful and friendly. The breakfast was made to order at the attached restaurant. The breakfast burrito was tasty and filling. So was the scramble eggs and potatoes!
Rooms larger than expected. Breakfast was disappointing. Upstairs neighbors very noisy at 130 am. Not management's fault, but very irritating. Staff was helpful when providing space for our motorcycles where they could keep an eye on them
It is not my practice to write reviews because what is important to one isn't necessarily the same to another. This hotel is proximal to the Amtrak station in Bakersfield. I visited the premises during the day and night to visually observe and validate regarding safety and upkeep of the hotel grounds. I also conversed with the front desk staff. My initial assessment was positive and when I stayed overnight and found the newly renovated room and amenities was equal to that of Courtyard Marriott, I was satisfied. If they continue to be diligent in providing a good product for the price, they can count on my stay there at least once a month. I recommend without reservation. My needs were met.
I expect clean floors - bathroom sink was odd. Step to second floor could be difficult for senior citizen, Photo of entrance does not fit reality. Property was gated with beautiful custom iron but no open gate to walk next door.
This place is in a bad part of town, the staff is rude and not friendly. We were put in a part away from the main hotel and it was filled with teams of very young children. All night there was doors banging, sounded like soccer games being played, babies crying, gun shot and sirens. This was a terrible night sleep, and breakfast was poorly done. We had a long ride ahead and this was no was to get started.
This is a great hotel! The rooms were large and clean, the beds and pilllows were comfortable, the linens were nice, the breakfast was delicious. What's not to like? I would stay here again in a heartbeat.
This BW, like many I have stayed at, is clean, comfortable, and the staff are friendly. What makes it stand out is Manuel's Casa de Mariscos. If Manuel's wasn't associated with this hotel, then it would be just an ordinary BW. I am loyal to the BW brand, but Manuel's is what keeps bringing me back to Hill House!
I made this reservation on the road. I had never stayed downtown Bakersfield. What a treat! Exceptional stay, from Joann who took reservation, to Raj, at front desk. Clean, quiet, best Best Western! Thank you!
You feel very safe at this hotel especially seeing the poor area you are located in. Lots of homeless people around. The area is protected by tall metal fences with spears on top. I was annoyed by the road noise but didn't notice the window was open until the morning.☹️ The room is large and updated. Breakfast is take out but my burrito warm and good.
Huge homeless population issue that clearly management knows about but doesn't warn travelers or perhaps doesn't care. The loud shouting starts at the very early hours and continues until dawn, at which time it starts up again. No sleep. Very scary scene. Avoid this property.
Just don't stay here, it's not worth it. I have never felt more unsafe, disgusted, and disappointed from a Best Western stay ever. I checked in to find lights not working, sticky carpet and an air conditioner that smelled like wet mold? You have to pass bridges that go over a rancid barranca to get to your room. There are so many bridges and gates it was scary not having easy access to exit. I checked in, left to eat and put gas and checked out within 4 hrs there. I felt so unsafe, and just disgusted. I didn't even want to touch anything, let my purse off my shoulder, and felt gross even washing my hands there. Unsanitary. Unsafe. Don't risk it - it's not worth it .
The room was very comfortable: good bed, good shower, coffee in room, great size refrigerator. The hotel is in a good location. Front desk staff amenable. Breakfast included, unlike many motels that advertise breakfast but don't offer it since the pandemic began.
Overall, my stay was good and I would consider staying again. The room was spacious and clean, the grounds were clean and felt safe and all of those important things. I appreciated that. Unfortunately, I feel the staff can use more training. When I was booking the room, I called and asked what a "King Deluxe" room was and learned those rooms have a balcony or patio. This was perfect as I was bringing by dog, wanted a ground floor room and going in/out an exterior door would be more convenient than the hallways. I also asked about an adjoining room as I had a friend also staying there and we hoped to be next to each other. I was told the hotel didn't have adjoining rooms. When I checked in, I did NOT have a room with an exterior door or patio, but it DID have an adjoining door. ??? That was pretty disappointing. If you book, make your expectations very clear.
Very nice hotel. Property has a gate around the periphery of the property so our car was safe. Room was very comfortable and spacious. Staff was so nice and gracious. Housekeeping fabulous! Best affordable hotel in Bakersfield!
Absolutely roach infested hotel and management didn't blink an eye when discussed. No apology, no discount, no nothing, just bye bye. Also, sirens raged throughout the night making for a terrible nights sleep. Will not stay here again, nor will I advise anyone to stay.
Well kept rooms in a quiet neighborhood on the weekends. Still due to Covid, you get a breakfast voucher for takeout from the attached restaurant. The breakfast burrito with sausage was ok. Scrambled eggs with meat options or a continental breakfast is available. There are few walkable dining options available, especially Sunday nights.
There was definitely good and bad aspects of the hotel. The room was nice and the check in was pleasant. And now for the bad. We deliberately chose the hotel as it had a bar and restaurant so we wouldn't need to leave for a meal. We wandered down to the bar/restaurant area just to get our bearings and was handed menus. We explained that as it wasn't even 4pm, we would eat later. The server was quite short tempered and told us that if we didn't eat now they were going to close the restaurant and bar early as it was in her words “a quiet day”. They were only staying open till 7pm anyway so shutting up shop it down earlier was not good customer service. The next morning the complimentary breakfast was handed to you outside the restaurant door to take back to the room. It was a very limited choice and was inedible. The eggs were sat in a lake of water, the potatoes were solid and undercooked. All in all, very disappointing.
Superb hotel hands down. A bang for your buck. Outstanding reception from staff, friendly and professional, quick check in and out. Large suite, clean, functional exceeding expectations. I really enjoyed my stay there and I can't wait to go back. I will definitely recommend it to everybody
this pet friendly hotel had a cheerful helpful staff. Room was large and clean. we will go back to this location when traveling through Bakersfield Internet was acceptable and room had amnenities needed, e.g microwave, TV , coffee machine . So good room for the price
Room was clean, bed was extremely comfortable, staff polite, immediate hot water, quiet, close to downtown, I like the water feature. parking lot could use a few big trees or canopies- the Bakersfield sun is brutally hot on cars sitting in the lot.
It was a good place, price wasn't bad BUT could be better. The only thing is their building where their rms are doesn't have elevators so that I didn't like. I had to switch floors because of that fact. I would recommend them putting elevators in to make it easier to bring up big heavy luggage to the other floors.
One of the worst hotel experiences of my life…. We arrived late and checked into our room. The room and sheets were clean which was nice. As soon as we laid down you could hear the people above us stomping around as the floor creeks. We did our best to ignore that until the belligerent guests in the neighboring room started screaming at each other and slamming their room door. I woke up 4 or 5 times through the night because the walls are paper thin, YOU CAN HEAR EVERYTHING. In the morning the house cleaning was standing outside our door at 7am speaking loudly to each other and laughing. I would never stay here again even if it was free, I worked the next day on 4 hours of sleep. 2 stars because it was clean, other only 1 star.
We booked this hotel not knowing anything about Bakersfield and although was a nice hotel once we got there travelled through some interesting parts of the city to arrive there. We also had difficulty on a Sunday night finding a restaurant that we felt comfortable eating at. Friendly and accommodating staff at check-out but not so much at check-in. Breakfast left much to be desired as it consisted of a choice of three box meals...
We planned our trip to pass through Bakersfield. We like the Best Western Plus brand, and chose Hill House even though it's a couple of miles off the freeway. We had an enjoyable stay, it was quiet at night, the breakfast was very tasty. Located where it is, it's not the most convenient location for the freeway traveler, but the directions to get there from the 99 freeway were easy enough to follow. If one is going to the convention center, a hockey game, or the railway station, and need a place to stay, this is a great location.
I surprised by how nice the rooms were. The furniture wasn't outdated like most BW, and the bed was super comfortable, and the room was cleaned extremely well. I have to go back next week and will stay again.
Found that this hotel has great security in addition to being quiet. The staff are great as well. The room was nice and clear. The king bed was very comfortable. It was obvious that the using good COVID cleaning practices. We will return next time we are in Bakersfield.
The hotel is conveniently located to downtown. Our room was large, clean and comfortable, with a loveseat and coffee table, desk with office chair, refrigerator and microwave. The bed was comfortable and we slept well. The front desk staff were all very pleasant. The restaurant food was delicious. We will stay (and eat) here again.
This place was sooooo clean inside and out. We do a lot of traveling. Best Western is our first choice. We have NEVER stayed at a BW that was this nice. We are so glad we discovered this gem. The room was awesome with every accessory you could ask for. The breakfast in their hotel is free and made to order. The staff could not have been more accommodating! We just could not possibly give these folks enough kudos. Please don't pass the opportunity for a comfortable, quiet, good nights rest at this diamond. We will be back again this time next year. Hotel was great, super clean and comfy beds.. Shower / toilet area spacious. Sink/mirror separate so you can get ready while others shower. fluffy towels. Breakfast options with restaurant next door were great. Order and they cook so fresh, not a sack! Breakfast burrito was great! Parking is fenced but a bit tight in case you are towing.
Really nice. Lived up to what we expect from Best Western. Rooms spacious, bedding very nice, mattress comfy, toilet/ shower combo area spacious, towels fluffy. Making due with breakfast option due to covid but good arrangement with order to go through restaurant attached to hotel. They offer 3 options they cook up once you place oder. Breakfast burrito was very good! Over all excellent experience!
The Best Western Plus chain is very reliable so we make a point of looking for one when on the road. The breakfast is fairly basic but certainly does the job and lets you get on the road. The beds are always comfortable and the staff are helpful.
This hotel is my reliable sanctuary and staycation. It's clean, quiet, and comfortable. The staff is consistently nice and helpful. Once I'm in, I prefer to isolate with no housekeeping. They always accommodate me and even anticipate my needs.
My Wife and I have stayed at this hotel a few times and have always had a good stay. Clean quiet room. Friendly staff. A bonus is that Manuel's Restaurant is attached to the lobby so that you don't have to drive off looking around for dinner after a long day on the road. We ordered the Shrimp Fajitas and Chicken Tacos, took them to our room and they were great!! Also, the breakfast in the morning is prepared by the restaurant, as well. We had the scrambled eggs with ham, potatoes and toast with orange juice. Very happy with our stay.
This chain consistently offers nice, clean rooms and a safe environment. Breakfast is great, too. .Friendly staff and ease of check in check out make this our go to hotel when travelling. Great deals with AAA and Best Western Rewards.
Good hotel. Friendly efficient staff. Grounds were clean well cared for. Room was clean & quiet. Pet friendly was great. Excellent hot breakfast. GPS had a little trouble finding the place. Once arrived good location to highways
Staff at the front desk were friendly and helpful. Room was clean and comfortable. Heater/air conditioner was really noisy in room 132. Hope they get it fixed. Nice that the shower had soap and shampoo dispensers. Breakfast was brought out to us in togo containers. OJ was good, but the scrambled eggs tasted like powdered eggs.
We stayed there one night. It was clean and quiet. Breakfast was take out and was good. Loved the restaurant they had on the property. When we return to Bakersfield we will definitely stay again. The receptionists were very attentive and kind.
We stayed in this hotel for a night on our way back home from Bryce. We took a 2 queen, non smoking room. Yet we could smell cigarette all around the room. Chair was in bad condition (refer images). Breakfast was pathetic (refer image). My recommendation is to avoid this hotel if you are traveling with family.
This part of town looks rough, but the hotel was excellent and safe. The fencing certainly helped. The "take away" breakfast was very welcome in these covid times. The room is large and nicely furnished. And we enjoyed the large Mexicali restaurant just around the corner.
Never had any complaints while staying at a Best Western. The rooms at Best westerns are always clean, clean smelling, and supply me with the amenities that are important to me. I like that I can always get the room I like when staying at the Best Western in Bakersfield, California. Love the room with the view of the back water wheel.
This was an outstanding hotel, great price, great breakfast, clean, roomey, and it allows large dogs! Breakfast was fresh and hot made to order with three choices. All covid safe. Staff helped me print somethings - computer not avail due to covid but all I had to do was email the desk and she printed it right away for me!
My friend and I stayed here a total of 2 night, one night on the way to Palm Springs and one night on the way back. This property is not in the greatest part of town, but they have fencing surrounding it so I felt that was a good deterrent for people that had no business there. Because of covid, the pool area is closed, and I didn't see that they had a spa even if it would have been open. The breakfast was very good and more than filling. Everyone at the front desk was very friendly. The rooms were clean and the beds were comfortable.
The room was large with a sitting area, desk and large dresser with TV, fridge and microwave, separate vanity area outside the restroom & shower, large closet. Nice shutters on window. We asked for a pet free room and got one. Prices were quite reasonable. (The adjoining Mexican restaurant was actually delicous - some of the best Mexican food we've had in ages. Best tamale ever IMHO. Margarita's were good too.) Due to covid protocols, the "continental breakfast" involves a voucher for the attached restaurant 6:30am-9:30am. To go only. Some people may want to sit at an eating area but we were fine with the "to go" aspect. Personally we also felt that the breakfast options from the restaurant (3 choices when we visited in Oct 2021 ) were better than the packaged pastries & hard boiled egg & cereal type of stuff normally provided at these hotel breakfasts. I saw some reviews critical that pool was closed, but that is the case with all the hotels we've stayed at curing these covid times. Bakersfield has a crime rate among the top 10-20 cities in the USA therefore I really liked this hotel because the entire complex is surrounded by iron gates (some with pointy tops). There are various gates that can open, but they were all closed when we were there and there is only one street that you can enter on. I thought this was good in light of the city and reviews I've read from other hotels. Parking surrounding the building and we felt safe and could even park our car just outside our window. We stayed here in early October and were going to stay over in Tehachapi on our way home from our trip but actually cancelled that hotel and stayed here a 2nd time. Our room had an adjoining door to another hotel room and so that could let in more noise between the rooms. Don't know if there are options to request a room without an adjoining room.
I recently stayed at another property in Bakersfield but the Best Western by far was better or shall I say the Best! The room had up to date amenities, plenty of outlets for my electronics, comfortable bedding and sitting areas. I will be returning to this hotel, no doubt.
Room was very clean. Front desk and maid service people were exceptionally friendly and helpful. Breakfast was available however was limited due to COVID. I did have a safe feeling due to their COVID precautions that they had in place.
Front desk staff, specially the Indian lady is so rude. She's always in rush and not willing to listen to customers needs/requests; despite my stay there for a week on business trip. In addition, the kitchen and breakfast is served in an area that's pretty far from most rooms. The hotel also claims that they get rid of lost/found items within a week due to Covid, even if it's a charger. Lobby is not furnished well and the hallways aren't that clean.
If you need a well kept Best Western I. The heart f Bakersfield, then pleas visit and stay the Hill House. Great service at all levels. Thank you for your kind hospitality and excellent customer service. We will be back!
Bed – Excellent Quiet – Excellent Breakfast – Excellent (take-out) Parking – Excellent and secure behind wrought-iron fence TV - Excellent Internet - Excellent Customer Service - Excellent Due to Covid, the pool was not open -- but we enjoyed walking around the perimeter of the Hotel. Lots of restaurants nearby within walking distance. We look forward to our next visit to this hotel which provides excellent overnight lodging.
Out of the two BW in town, this is by far the best choice. Kind front desk with fast service; breakfast service was decent considering COVID options. Upstairs was super hot walking into the room, took a little while to cool but once it did, it was reasonably cool. Don't stay upstairs if you're going to need help with bags - I couldn't find a working elevator and had no forewarning!
Staff leaves a lot to be desired. Very unprofessional during check in. Had I not been dropped of and had no vehicle to leave to a different hotel. Overall the room was decent and the hotel was clean. Furthermore the attached restaurant was very good. Location was great if you are looking to go to the Amtrak station.
Check in was terrible... I had a pet reservation and was told I didn't. Room was dirty. Internet kept disconnecting. Pool was closed. Footsteps and squeaks from room above interrupted my sleep and kept me awake.
The location of the hotel is very convenient to the freeway and convention center. We arrived late and left early so there wasn't much interaction with the staff. Our room was very large and comfortable. The parking lot is well lite and seems very safe. There are no elevators in the section we stayed in so climbing the stairs to our room was a little difficult with our luggage. The only negative thing I saw was the carpet on the stairs could be cleaned or replaced otherwise we would stay here again.
We stayed at this hotel right after staying at 2 other BW+ hotels. This hotel seemed to still have closed services due to COVID-19, whereas the others did not, e.g. breakfast, pool. It was very hot, and we were looking forward to pool time, but we didn't get it. Also, the breakfast was a choice from a menu, and no deviations. No waffles, just eggs. Refrigerator in the room had a seal that was completely off, so the door didn't shut tight. They also did not give shampoo, soap, conditioner bottles like the others had. Bathroom had dust in corners of the floor. Pretty disappointed in this property.
Great, clean hotel-room was quiet. Free breakfast that consisted of 3-4 fresh made options, very tasty. staff are well organized and very pleasant to deal with. Did not get to use the pool of fitness center, but both looked well maintained.
While staying at this hotel, my husband was bitten by another guests dog. This was is the main part of the hotel and was unprovoked. He was merely taking out our luggage. The staff was very helpful in getting the needed information for rabies shot verification etc. I would caution all who stay in hotels that allow pets to be wary.
Wanted to start with the dining first. Small family owned Mexican restaurant, Manuels, was wonderful, and after a long day on the road being able to walk next door for great food and margarita was a plus! The room we had was fine. Staff was unable to accommodate our initial ADA reservation as the prior occupant refused to leave (we could hear him shouting at manager through the phone). They were able to arrange a suitable ground floor room, being extremely apologetic and very professional in a stressful situation.
Here, July 2021: Pool CLOSED. Fitness CLOSED. Business computers CLOSED. Lobby seating CLOSED. Walkway over river CLOSED (peds have to walk in the car lane, dangerous esp. for kids). All CLOSED purportedly for covid, but guess what?! _Doubletree_'s pool, spa, fitness, ALL OPEN, nice, and clean, only $10/night more. At BWHH, hallways were strewn with trash people put out bc of lack of service in rooms, and it wasn't picked up all day. Stairs, hallways were filthy, hadn't been vacuumed in months. Despite all that, we gave this place one more night bc I wanted to be here for river-walk access; alas, that's become an extended homeless encampment that wreaks of urine and feces, so fail. Only positive thing I can say is that for now, BW is giving guests breakfast (if included) at resident Manuel's Cafe de Mariscos, and it's amazing. So sorry Manuel and su esposa have to be associated with this horrid hotel. We called Best Western Rewards and closed our account. Not worth risking another bad experience like this. I understand saving a buck, but if that's your priority, go to Motel 6, which isn't bad; you'll at least get what you pay for.
- We had booked 2 queens beds - Good sized rooms - Loved the toiletries (eco friendly with large refillable shampoo, conditioner dispensing containers).Made with organic ingredients. -Breakfast was served in to-go styrofoam containers (didn't like that). Portion size was very less. - Carpets in the hallway are stained - Very decently priced - Very friendly staff
We liked this hotel a great deal. Finding it was very easy. The parking lot is large and the check-in and restaurant area is separate from the hotel rooms. Rooms were spacious and everything was spotlessly clean. The usual range of amenities was available and their pet charge was reasonable. We enjoyed dinner at the attached restaurant and the breakfast, prepared by the restaurant, was tasty and plentiful. Their orange juice was the best.
Hallways are a bit shabby and unclean, but the room itself was clean and comfortable, except the coffee maker did not appear to have been cleaned very well, and had mold growing in it. Location is right in downtown (not sure if this is a good or bad thing.) The included breakfast was actually better than expected (breakfast burritos or scrambled eggs with potatoes and a choice of meat)
If you're handicapped, or have difficulty climbing stairs, (about 14 steps) get the main floor, as it's two stories. Only two handicapped parking places in front of the rooms, they need more at that location. There are others throughout the parking area but, they're not too close to the rooms. Our room was 85 degrees, as the air conditioning was off. It was in the 90's outside. It took over an hour plus to get the room comfortable enough to sleep. Breakfast for us was a burrito because of Covid. I had a sausage burrito and my wife had a bacon burrito. No inside eating, that was disappointing. There are two other choices in a togo box. We got a great tasting orange juice and you can also have coffee and tea. My wife got a bag of cookies and I got an apple, as the hotel's choice in our breakfast bag. Beautiful landscaping and very clean. Beds are really comfortable with relaxing pillows.
We arrived last night around 1230 am there were 9 people in the lobby waiting and one gentleman working the front desk. We waited for about 30 min but that was because a fire alarm sounded in one of the rooms but once returned to the desk he was very proffessional the rooms were very clean and nicely put together. The tv was very nice alot of channels to chose from We had a wonderful stay, to Joshua night manager great job you need some help.
Yes, I always stay here (usually twice a year for business). I feel comfortable here - parking close to the building, key needed to get into building, fencing around property. Then the room is nice with its amenities. There were 3 issues and when I went to follow up, the person at reception would say "I'm sorry, I did not find a note about that. I will write one now and take care of it." It would get taken care of, but it showed that I needed to follow up. Do remember this if you have any problems. The staff is very polite and very nice. I would not hesitate to stay here again!
This is my go to Hotel in Bakersfield. The front desk is alway very nice and happy to go out their way to make my stay even more enjoyable. The Rooms are spacious and always clean. The breakfast is hot and cooked to order. A great value for what you get.
Great customer service, free breakfast. Restaurant on site with Mexican food that's delicious . Stay here every time and have not had one issue. Rooms are nice. Great location downtown. I recommend everyone to stay here. Price isn't bad at all.
We had dinner in the Mexican restaurant attached to the Hill House. The meal was quite good, but the margaritas were the best we've ever had. Service at checkin was swift and friendly (cudos to the gentleman whose name I don't recall). The room was clean, comfy and quiet and the bathroom, although a bit dated, was great. Checkout was slower but I was told the computer was giving the gentleman a difficult time, so I don't blame staff. We will return on our future visits to this lovely town.
Good place, good people, good food, good internet, good is good. I have no more to say, but this thing insists I make it at least two hundred characters, which is really rather annoying when I have no more to say.
Very nice appearance. Towels were stained and not washed. Bed was m not washed. There were sticking run marks in the drawers. We needed a place to crash and brought our own towels and bedding so didn't say anything.
Probably better, cleaner and safer to just stay somewhere else. The area is nasty, the second you walk in to go to your room it's filth and stinks very bad, the lobby is nice but I guess they don't visit any other are of the hotel, i would pay a couple extra bucks to start somewhere else.
Was surprised how nice the property was in dt Bakersfield. Felt secure in room and parking car. Expected noise from the street and heard nothing. Updated decor. Liked the shutters instead of curtains. Microwave and fridge included. USB s for electronics. Variety of pillows and softness instead of ones like rocks. Didn't stay for breakfast. Would recommend to others and will stay again.
Front desk staff is friendly and professional. Location is very well kept for the area it resides in (typical for any location in a down town setting) Staff is responsive to disruptive guests (A definite plus!)
The hotel was nice with very good beds. The staff was helpful and nice. The restaurant on the premises was very good. Good food, good service and not expensive. I had shrimp, yum. Husband chili verde, also good. Breakfast at the same restaurant was included with room cost and was good
I will Definitely look forward to Staying at this Best Western plus anytime I'm in Bakersfield CA. Everything was cleaned and Sanitized and Placed in it's proper area and very easy to find or get to..
Clean room, welcoming and professional staff. Outstanding take-out made to order breakfast. Very good internet. Will definitely stay here on my next trip to Bakersfield. Smell of Anti-bacterial cleaning agent is strong, perfume like. If you are sensitive to smells, ask front desk to open window before arrival.
The staff is very friendly and the rooms are clean and freshly renovated. The decor is nice and there is plenty of parking. It is in a good location with many nearby services. I stay at this location monthly while i'm in Bakersfield on business. It also has a very good restaurant in the building next to the lobby.
When I was working, I'd go out of my way to stay at this property. It's centrally located, safe and has great food onsite and and nearby. This hotel was recently nicely upgraded to Best Western Plus and they did a great job (very nice mattresses). Say hi for me to Mary in Manuel's Mexican Restaurant located on property.
I was pleasantly surprised by the friendly staff and clean hotel. During pandemic, it's nice to see things this normal. I was on a business trip and was very pleased. I would stay here again when the need occurs.
This hotel is a great find. Staff was extremely friendly and helpful. There is a tall gate surrounding the property for security. The room had nice wide shutter blinds which were a nice touch. The AC worked well, we had great water pressure, and the beds were very comfortable. Our stay was short but I have zero complaints and will stay here again when in Bakersfield.
I do not recommend this best western, the gentleman at the front desk was quite impolite. Along with that despite saying that the rooms were non smoking our room had a strong smell of cigarettes that was quite awful. I've stayed at Best Westerns across the country and this was my worst experience
Older hotel that has been updated. The room itself was nice and clean. Not as nice as some BW that we've stayed at but was fine. The problem was the neighborhood. The receptionist told us not to leave anything in the car because of breakins, and we were in a U-HAUL! She told us to back it in so the lobby could see it. There were some very shady people staring at us but got out of there OK. We were told to never walk anywhere, to drive only. Because of this we would not stay there again.
I stayed at this hotel twice in late 2017 early 2018 and recently returned for a one night stay. I always book the King Business room which includes a loveseat sofa. This is a Plus branded hotel which means it has a fitness room, however due to COVID it is closed along with the pool. Hotel is in 3 separate 2-story buildings with staircases. Each building requires your key card to enter. Vending machines in each building with one offering Monster energy drinks. Beds are very comfortable although the King bed only had two small pillows when normally it has four. The owner and staff are very friendly and let me checkin early. What I love about Best Western is that each property has a unique interior. Amtrak is across the street however you won't hear any train noise. Morning breakfast is through a third party restaurant on site which offers child-size portions! I'm almost a Diamond member and I'm also a Gold member of hotels.com as I travel frequently. The best rates are booking through them directly after creating a free rewards account. Hotels.com and other third parties are actually more expensive as some brands now offer lower rates when booking direct. Plenty of parking with a gated property for added security. Love this cute hotel overall.
The staff were welcoming and timely. It was clearly evident that they took pride in their jobs and maintaining the property. Though the property is older (vintage), it was impeccably maintained with plenty of charm. The rooms were updated with all the amenities and the beds were fabulous. I could not say enough nice things about our stay!
I don't often make it down to Bakersfield but this is the only place I will stay at when I do, the location is perfect, it's quite and the rooms are great and the value is outstanding. a great little restaurant on the property that was closed on this visit , probably due to the Chinese bat fever (Covid-19) I highly recommend this property.
We booked this hotel for 1 night in June 20, 2 rooms for 4 people. However, due to the Covid 19 pandemic we had to cancel our complete tour of the USA because our flights were cancelled and as UK citizens we were not allowed to enter the country. Although we cancelled our booking at least a week before arrival and the t &c's on Best Western's website stated that all BW hotels in the USA could be cancelled free of charge because of the pandemic, BW took a payment from me on my credit card and we have still not received a refund. We were initially told to expect a refund between 2-4 weeks of cancellation. Well it is now almost 5 weeks and no refund has been issued. All other companies have refunded us for flights and accommodation, some within a few days of notification and so I would advise anyone thinking of booking this hotel not to bother. No interest in customer care, just taking money from tourists who could not even enter the country!
I have stayed in many hotels over the last few years and I have found that Best Western Plus ranks HIGH on my list, it is a very nice choice! They provide breakfast with many choices and the beds are wonderful!
Needed a hotel halfway between Las Vegas and Sacramento. I always check for Best Western properties first; and I'm almost always completely satisfied with my stay there. What a lovely, quaint property Hill House is and the restaurant has a delicious offering of dinner options. Even during the pandemic of Covid 19; Best Western Hill House maintained fine standards; and came shining through.
We where treated wonderfully. Check in was short and sweet. Staff was very accommodating. Our room was excellent. Great atmosphere was outstanding. Check out was quick and easy. Great location and easy to get too.
We booked this hotel on our road trip through CA based on the photo of the quaint mill but never figured out how to visit it during our stay. The hotel is a fortress. Tall fences. Once in it was difficult to get out and the property is much larger than I expected. This is not a positive or criticism. Just a fact. When we were told to park by the swimming pool, we didn't realize there was multiple buildings. We found what we thought was a convenient spot, walked into the building directly in front of us and was overwhelmed by the smell of grandma's basement - it was musty. Fortunately, that wasn't our building. As walked over the bridge and found the third building and in that hallway, it spelled like someone was chilling out. Marijuana permeated this hallway. The room was large and comfortable, and we slept well. We had stopped for street side tacos a few miles previously, so we were not overly hungry, but we did visit the attached Mexican restaurant and it was here that the morning breakfast was ordered and served. The room rate included a full hot breakfast served to order. Was a nice touch. In the morning, the hallway didn't have any specific smell.
The first thing that struck us when we entered our room was how dirty the laminate inside the door was. I wet a facecloth and wiped it down. I spent a long time picking up dust balls on the carpet and finally gave up. I went into the bathroom, and the floor was dirty. I got another facecloth and wiped the floor. The bedspread had stains, so it was thrown in a corner. We were afraid to check the sheets in detail! When we were checking in we saw two different delivery services bringing in food, so we looked in the room for a menu, but there wasn't one. I asked at the desk and the receptionist wrote down two names and phone numbers and said one was pizza and one was Chinese. How are you supposed to order when you have no idea what is on the menu!!! It was a shame because the room would have been fine. When we checked out, I showed the facecloths to the gal at the deck and she apologized profusely and offered a $25 discount on the room, which was nice, and said they have some new housekeepers, but if that is the case, they clearly aren't trained properly. She promised a discount if we would return, but we declined.
Best westerns are pretty consistent, but what makes this one stand out is the restaurant on premises. Your complimentary breakfast is freshly made, and they told me I can order ahead for a take out evening meal to eat in my room. Pretty much the only place I'd stay in Bakersfield.
This was by far the worst hotel I've visited. The pictures look nice so I prepaid (non refundable). I was checked in to second building. The door would not lock, the carpet was wet, the smell of the whole property smelled of sewage, hair was all in the bed, comforter was filthy and had red stains on it. The chair was covered with filth. Also, some type of greasy kitchen was attached to my room with a window that would not lock. The whole time I was worried about my car being broke into because of people loitering in the fenced parking lot. I asked to be moved and the second room was no better.
We had a nice second floor room. The front desk suggested the second floor because it would be quieter and it was. The room was good sized and looked as if it had recently been remodeled. Everything worked. The carpeting on the stairs and in the hall was a bit shabby. Breakfast was in the adjacent Mexican restaurant. There were enough choices both Mexican and American food. Hotel staff was friendly and welcoming.
This property needs a good housecleaning, windows, and walls. Both bedspreads were stained. Full breakfast was in a restaurant but was not very good. We requested BW review this place for changes to be made to qualify for the BWPlus status. Very disappointing stay.
perfect for our stay, location, price, amenities, pet frendly secure parking lot, clean, updated, downtown, close to events, nice staff, GREAT Breakfast, nice Mexcan resturant, bar lounge, very nice lobbly, excellent parking lot, easy access. easy for handicap access,
From check in to check out and everything in between, had a nice, relaxing stay in this gem of a hotel. My room was clean with lots of light and oh, so quiet! I was there to attend an event which was being held at a big name hotel across the street, so this was conveniently located. My friends who were staying at the big name hotel, visited me one night and said that next year they'll be staying at BW too!
My husband and I stayed here to be closer to the hospital for his next day surgery. This motel is very nice and also affordable. It was clean and the staff members were friendly and helpful. I wasn't impressed with the restaurant next door, but we didn't want to leave to go somewhere else. We walked around the grounds as I was interested in the old mill building I saw pictured on the website. I was disappointed to find it inaccessible. Overall this is a nice place to stay. I felt safe with all the fencing. Not the best part of town.
Hotel was in a good location, not to far from downtown. Receptionist was very nice and checked us in quickly as I wasn't feeling too good. Most rooms are in the building opposite and breakfast is in the Mexican restaurant behind reception. Room was very comfortable and spacious and we had a good nights sleep.
Great value and location. I have stay here three times. Very safe and nice grounds (it is Bakersfield). The restuarant is not worth going to but there many within walking distance. It is close to most freeways but takes a little knowledge of the area or gps.
The front desk staff was rude and my room stunk. Also the day shift lied saying they could accommodate me and had semi truck and trailer parking when they didn't. Can't stand that they lied to me to get me to book a room. I had to park on the street and go through residential neighborhoods with tight turns to get a spot out of the way to park. I'll never stay here ever again.
Mani was excellent when we checked in, and made sure we were completely taken care of that night. Breakast was wonderful, and the service very attentive. The other associates were also wanting to make sure we were happy.
This is the worst best Western Plus I've ever stayed at. Clearly an older different hotel from days gone by. Different buildings. Difficult to maneuver driving due to tightness of layout, especially if the vehicle is large or there are two approaching vehicles. Only one entrance/exit, as it's literally surrounded by security fences with pointed tips. That's your first clue you're not in a good area. Other clues await shortly outside said security perimeter. For a BW+, this was more like an older 'budget' hotel, maybe even a motel. Upon checking in the first night, I could barely understand the front desk person. After a long day on the road and just wanting to get checked in to rest, language should NOT be an interference! There was no tv menu, so I had no idea what channels I had, what was playing, or what was next. Bathroom door was just sad: pressboard and coming apart at the bottom. Cobwebs on the wall. Fresh hole in the wall that I found out the next day at checkout was a recent item the hotel knew about and put me in anyway with no mention or discount. Mattress was absolutely 'budget' as my back and poor sleep for two days reflected. Wall mounted thermostat works, but is NOT connected to the older style base mounted unit which operates completely separate. Wall paint/plastering was lousy. The walkway arch thing seemed unstable and I was uncomfortable walking over it as a result. I travel to Bakersfield once or twice a year, but will NOT be back to this hotel.
We were in Bakersfield for a family wedding. We found this property and were very pleased. The room was a good size with all of the expected amenities. The property was pet friendly, which was important to us. We travel with our small dog. The breakfast was a step above what many hotels offer. You sat down and ordered from a menu with approximately 8 choices. We were quickly waited on. Our food wa good. Everything was kept clean and in good repair. We had a nice walk along Miller Creek, which is right behind the hotel. We walked quite a ways and saw ducks, etc. There were a few homeless people at one point in ouur walk. It was still pleasant, none the less. We would stay at htis property again. It is conveniently located, wiith restaaurants, museums, etc. nearby.
My wife and I stayed here for a night because we attended a concert at Rabobank arena , the arena is a 4 or 5 min walk which was a plus for us , the service was good the rooms was clean and they have good breakfast and a Mexican restaurant with in the hotel . I would definitely stay here again
Awesome hotel. Easy access to downtown Bakersfield. Staff were professional and friendly. Room nice size. Amenities were good. Small restaurant on site with free breakfast from simple menu. Would stay here again if in the area
This hotel has the best location if you're traveling by Amtrak, it also has a good restaurant adjacent. I've been coming here since 2008 and after this last visit I think It's time for a change. Upon arrival the clerk was ok until I asked about my specific requests at which she became curt and rushed to process me. The rooms are basic and smell like old cigarettes and my bed had an uncomfortable dip in the mattress. The best part of the stay was DEFINITELY Manuel's Mexican restaurant.
This was a very nice hotel. The breakfast was really good and you got to choose your meal from a menu. The room was great and we had no problems here. All of the staff were also very friendly. The grounds were also very well kept.
Rooms have been renovated recently but you wouldn't know that by the outside. Furniture, sheets, towels are all good. Breakfast is at restaurant on property so each order is individually made. In the heart of downtown if you need a business accommodation or are there for a show.
This was very peaceful, set back from main street and more like a private condo. Rooms were good size with all amenities. Breakfast at the Mexican Cafe next door (attached to hotel lobby) was also very good.
Excellent location in downtown area, near lots of restaurants. There is secure parking, the room was spacious and clean, the bed was comfortable and the room was quiet, helpful staff at the front desk, good free breakfast in the restaurant.
Check in was easy. Nice staff. They explained that breakfast would be down the hall in a restaurant. We had some trouble getting our room door to open. It was one of those electronic key things. It clicks green but when you try to open it it's seems like the the inside safety latch is on. We hadn't been in yet so I doubt that it was. I was about to give up when my wife gave it a try. She finally got it to open. At 3 AM we heard the manager outside trying to help another man get in his room. they were having the exact same problem. The room was okay. Large King with a small couch. Good fridge and micro. The bed is pretty firm. Definitely could use one of those pillow top mattress' like they had at the BW in Corning. We had room #140. "Elephants above us." Next time we'll ask for the top floor. There's only two floors and the stairs are short, no elevator. They don't serve breakfast in the hotel anymore. You walk through the lobby to a mexican restaurant next door. 25 minute wait in line for breakfast. Breakfast was okay. About 7 choices on the menu. No prices listed. Don't know what they do if people walk in off the street to eat. Eat what you pick, leave a tip and you're gone.
Very nice hotel. Clean, great location. Really nice pool. Love the “makeup” light with fan! Also love the ready to use body wash, shampoo and conditioner dispensers. Also plenty of towels to use. Comfortable beds.
We stayed one night with our pet. Very clean room , smelled great and it was a quiet hotel and we enjoyed our stay . There was grass where our dog could potty and the grounds were very clean and well kept . The staff was friendly and accommodating. The restaurant was fabulous as they prepared our dinner even though they just closed when we arrived , the food was excellent. We would stay here again !
Nice older hotel that has been remodeled but still needs work on the noise. Dog area very small. There was no freezer in the refrigerator, HVAC very loud, the light over the bathroom sink not helpful and the shower head needs to be cleaner.
We were attending a Toby Keith concert at the Rabobank arena and picked this hotel because of the proximity , it's only a 5 minute walk ! perfect. !! Hotel is dated but rooms are spacious and clean and the bed was comfortable. Complimentary breakfast at restaurant next door was very good. Overall a very good value.
Stayed one night as we were vacationing in California. The room had been refurbished and it was clean. The breakfast at the restaurant was very good! The staff at the restaurant was very attentive and courteous! Would definitely stay at this hotel again on my travels back to Bakersfield!
Received free upgrade! Clean updated king sized business suite w/ comfortable bed. Fast friendly front desk service. Great air-conditioning. Free wifi and parking. Mini fridge. Pool. Parking felt safe and secure. 2 story brick building w/ outer looking doors and interior hallways. Would stay here again
First room smelt of smoke, moved to next room which we figured out smelled like dead rat when you turned on the fan/light for the bathroom which meant we had to use the bathroom in the dark. Floors made feet jet black in 10 minutes flat. Very noisy hotel with thin walls, but a great staff!
Great clean.place to stay. We were out of town to adopt our new mlm puppy and this was our 1/2 way point to our destination. Front desk was friendly. Room were large with microwave and refrigerator that kept our drink super cold!! Nice pool with tables and chair to lounge. They have a restaurant and bar. Hot breakfast included. For breakfast its sit down they take your order and made fresh. Not buffet style. The menu is small but gives variety of options. They also, have a kids menu. I would definitely go back to this hotel.
Good hotel to stay in... friendly staff.. good service...room was very nice....clean and comfortable.... location of hotel is good and close to restaurant's and other places.... I will definitely be staying here again..
The staff was courteous and helpful during our visit making our stay during a stressful move, very pleasant. I want to give a VERY special thanks to GJ...he was wonderful and very helpful when we left an important item behind while rushing out to meet movers in Arizona. He went above and beyond, shipping an important medical device to us that was left in the room! Thanks so much to him and his great staff!
Absolutely awful would be the only way to describe this place. It is dangerous, just dont stay here, do yourself a favour and keep going to the next city. Homelessness is a problem in America, I know this, but people sleeping on benches outside reception and on the stairs to your room is not what you expect from any hotel. When we arrived we assumed the place had closed down as it looked abandoned, shame it hadn't, it should be! We went into what we thought was the hotel (it was one of their 3 buildings), and it absolutely stank. Found reception to be greeted by 2 lovely people (the only redeeming feature of this place by the way) who gave us our room. It was an adjoining room which was NOT secure and not safe to stay in. We asked to be moved and were offered the same room with a guarantee the adjoining room would remain vacant, we declined and opted for the move. Second room was better but despite no smoking rules, hallways stank of cigarettes. The property is surrounded by fencing with all access gates padlocked, we tried to go to a restaurant and had to jump a fence to get out and back in, surely this is a fire hazard! Breakfast was nothing short of farcical, literally thrown at you by the rudest old lady you could meet, absolutely NOTHING outside the norm could be accommodated, the sharp tongued old lady shot down any requests, my breakfast was inedible and I left it there, I can't describe how bad it was, rubbery stale old boot leather, vile. The whole place needs to be bulldozed and redone. The area isn't safe, the rooms aren't secure, the breakfast would be better in San Quentin, in fact, I'd sooner spend a night there than this hellhole, avoid at all costs.
Loved the room very stylish and great value for money. We had a nice meal in the restaurant. We did a tour around California and loved the Best Western hotels. They are hard to beat for value and location.
Hotel was clean, staff friendly. Breakfast was cold and service was rude. If traveling with my family in the future I will not go here because of the breakfast. Poorly plated, not of good quality. Lobby was clean and desk staff polite.
Nice location near civic buildings and churches but a lot of homeless people around because it is on a canal with walking/biking paths. Facility is surrounded by metal fencing to keep out the denizens. The best feature is the Mexican restaurant adjoining the hotel that is family-run. Good food and fun to talk to the familia!
I just stayed here one night on my way home and found it to be a good place to stay. It's an older property that they've spiffed up the rooms. The place is clean but being on a busy street there was a fair amount of traffic noise. They included a free breakfast at the restaurant that right on the grounds.
Very clean, pretty, and well appointed. Included breakfast was served (order from a menu), not buffet, very fast service. Excellent comfortable beds and pillows, spacious room. Pool area was attractive, next to a landscaped water channel.
We stayed 3 nights in a pet room. Floors were absolutely filthy. The dog spilled a little water on the wooden floor. I used a white wash cloth to wipe up the water, a space about 1 square foot. Cloth was black when I was done. There were dust bunnies all over the floor. There was old soap scum in the shower soap holder. I had to go to the service desk 3 times before the floors were cleaned. Was a room with 2 beds, I had to go to the desk clerk because house keeping for got to put a blanket on the bed. I was very dissappointed.
Very nice common and private areas. Breakfast was fresh instead of the ready made fare usually offered. Associates polite and helpful. Close to all the downtown attractions many within walking distance. Only drawback can be the rush hour traffic.
Although the assistance at check in was great the checkout experience was not. I informed them at check in I wished to pay in cash at time of check out and was told it would not be a problem. During check out they charged my card even when I was standing at the desk with cash in my hand. He did not offer to correct the error after I told him I wanted to pay cash, never mentioning he was going to charge my card or ask if that's what i wanted until I said I wanted to pay in cash. The floor i was staying on smelled strongly of raw marijuana, which gives me a head ache and there was no way to avoid it. There was people yelling in the halls and adjoining rooms until 3:00 in the morning and constant sirens running up and down the street outside. The included breakfast severely lacked options with out eggs, which my wife is allergic to and can not eat.
nice hotel very fast check in and check out very nice continental breakfast and very friendly staff. they have onsite laundry and a restaurant in the hotel as well. I will stay here again. this place was very clean as well
My third try at Best Western and so far the best. Hotel in fairly new, nice room and very quiet. I skipped the restaurant on property as there are other options close by. Close to convention center and mid-town. Fitness center is small (I did not use it this time).
First time visiting downtown Bakersfield, Downtown was a pleasant suprise with easy access from major highways. Hotel well located within downtown, close to arena and AMTRAC station. Best Western was consistent with others I have stayed at, not the lowest priced but within reason. Room was spacious and "very" quiet
We don't stay in Bakersfield too often because we live in Tehachapi, BUT on rare occasions we do and for some reason had not discovered this gem. Very pleased with our stay! There was a sit down breakfast with a nice choice of menu items. Our room was very quiet and comfortable. I can't think of anything to say that isn't good about this property or our stay!
Was pleasantly surprised on my visit to Bakersfield. First time here on business and found the place to be clean and nicely appointed. I got in late and did not feel like driving and searching for dinner. They have a Mexican restaurant right on the property and the food was awesome! They also had a full breakfast available at the same restaurant in the morning. Very comfortable and quiet. I will be back!
Room was fair, amenities in the shower were empty. Finding out after you started to shower. Heating blew cold air sometime. The odor in the room was musty. The tissue dispenser fell apart and separated from the bathroom counter. Over all it all was tolerable not worth $168.00 a night would have exspected a bit more class.of a room.
I no longer live in Bakersfield, but come back for business and family. I stayed here in August 2018 (9 nights) and then January 2019 (ended up being 14 nights). The Hill House is clean, I feel secure (stayed on the 2nd floor), parking is good, well-lit, fenced. Mini fridge and microwave help make it a good value. Room was roomy, nice sized TV, seemed well-insulated (unit did not turn on/off much). Shampoo, conditioner, soap, lotion (all in wall dispensers) are of medium quality - not a deal breaker. Mattress and sheets felt fine, I slept well. Oh, the towels were excellent ! Breakfast is fine- not too much food and people are nice. Lobby coffee is good and strong. Newspaper (the daily local paper) - was there the first 2 days, then didn't see it again. Very interesting to the different languages of guests. I heard French, a Slavic language, some sort of Scandinavian, etc. All the staff that I interacted with were polite and professional. This is my place to stay in Bakersfield! .
After a long day of driving we checked in to a very nice room with a comfortable king bed, a small couch and coffee table, microwave and small refrigerator. At first we were disappointed that there weren't a lot of restaurants nearby, but we didn't want to drive so we went to the Mexican and Seafood restaurant next door. We are used to good Mexican food back home, so we were pleasantly surprised at the quality of the dinner. It was just great comfort food, and the service was so friendly and attentive. The next morning we were able to order a yummy breakfast off the menu! I would definitely recommend this hotel!
The checkin process was fast and easy. The pool was closed for maintenance while we were there. The rooms were spacious and clean. The beds were not as comfortable as other best westerns I've stayed at. You could not really hear outside noise in the rooms which is nice. The breakfast was made to order. It was very fast and tasty.
This is my second time at this hotel and again I'm impressed with the service and style of the rooms and condition of the rooms. I'm a train lover and hearing the train during the night was not a bother at all. And your right across the street for the arena . For the price and quality and yes the restaurant also has some of the best Mexican food around. And yes well made drinks
We stopped here on our way to Vegas, and could not be happier. The rooms were clean and the beds were comfortable. They even threw in a real free breakfast not just a crummy buffet. The price was very reasonable we will save it for future return visits!!
This hotel is clean and everyone at the office was friendly. There was also a fence around that property and I felt save and I was not worried about my truck. There is a restaurant attached and the food is great! I will stay here again!
OK where to start...check in was easy and fast..had to drive over the small bridge to get to building one..found our room and began unloading our stuff as we were staying for 7 days...the smell of pot was very strong and over powering in the hallway..complained about that and nothing was done..soda machine was empty the whole week..complained about that..nothing was done. Check out time was interesting too..we were leaving at 5 am so we had to ring the bell at the office to try and get service..several mins later the door opens and we were able to check out.We made reservations here with out best western reward card and had a free night stay on out account at check in..when we checked out the clerk had no idea what we were talking about..charged us for all of the nights we stayed..Best western needs to do better with the rewards program.
Great location and price if visiting the Downtown Bakersfield area for events at the Convention Center or Rabobank Arena. It is is walking distances to both locations. You can tell it is an older hotel but still very clean, and comfortable. Staff was ver friendly, and professional. Restaurant and bar on site. Food was great, beer was cold and not badly priced. I would stay here again.
We stayed one night to see a concert at the Rabobank arena, which is a 3 minute walk. I will deffinetly stay here again if we're in the area. Great area with lots of food options and just overall a great hotel experience.
.The hotel was very clean. Our room was ready for us on arrival and like the rest of the Hotel spotless We enjoyed the restaurant on site good food and excellent service. I would have given the Hotel top marks but unfortunately the pool was dirty. A pity really after a 5 hour drive and a temperature of 80 degrees I was looking forward to a swim
Incredible value for money! We booked this on a Friday night with no notice and got an amazing price for this wonderful hotel. We turned up 15 minutes after booking online and checked in straight away with no issues. The service was very good - the staff were so friendly and polite. Our room was awesome and everything you'd expect from a best western... spotlessly clean, spacious, all equipment / beds new and fresh. The location is brilliant as it's in the nicer area of Bakersfield. We were particularly happy with the parking lot as it was very secure and the others we had seen looked dodgy, so it's nice to feel comfortable with leaving our car in a safe place. Solid 4/5 - the only negative comment would be that the server at breakfast was extremely rude and I was just shocked.. demanded my order and then as I began to speak she interrupted me and said ‘just give me a number'... she then shouted ‘listen to me' when she asked how I wanted my breakfast. She then brought out fruit instead of potatoes with my meal and I asked why, she said they'd ran out of potatoes... only problem is that I'm allergic to fruit and would have told her this if she had taken my order in the first place. BESIDE ALL OF THIS - the food was good and free so I didn't let it ruin my stay. Side note (We originally booked the Econo lodge as it was slightly cheaper... it was so disgusting and scary that we immediately cancelled and demanded a refund) - avoid this like the plague :)
This hotel is quirky and obviously remodeled, but also refreshing. With the large windows and higher than usual ceilings, it feels more open than most hotels. If it had tile floors instead of carpet, it would feel Mediterranean. Upon opening the room door, we were pretty much in the sink area by the restroom. There was a goofy wall behind the mirror that stopped a couple of inches short of the ceiling. Once past the sink area, the room was a nice size, clean, and had a slightly vaulted ceiling. The beds were comfortable, and the WiFi was strong. The bathroom was normal, although there were liquid soap dispensers in the shower rather than soap samples. The room had an old style air conditioner by the window, and the area we were in was quiet. My mom used the breakfast voucher and was pleasantly suprised to find that it paid for food from the restaurant, instead of the usual continental breakfast. The location is convenient. It is easy to walk to restaurants and other businesses from the hotel. A little creek runs behind the hotel, and a walking trail runs beside it. I would definitely stay in this hotel again. The cost, location, and general pleasantness of it make it a good deal. If I could change one thing, I'd prefer hard floors (because old carpet never seems quite clean enough).
Very nice room. CLEAN! Comfortable bed, pleasant decor. Friendly, helpful staff. Full, hot breakfast included in the restaurant attached to the hotel, Manuel's Casa Dr Mariacos and it was excellent. Husband had the huevoes rancheros; I had the American breakfast. Excellent, friendly service. Will definitely stay here again when in the area.
The Hill house location is super convenient if you're traveling by train. It's basically across the street from the station. The room was comfortable and very clean --even if a little dark-- and the staff were friendly. When I stayed, breakfast was cooked to order, and quite tasty -- although the choices were more limited than the usual Best Western breakfast buffet. I would stay there again
A very nice Best Western, recently renovated. Comfortable bed in a beautiful room. Quiet and safe. Great onsite Mexican restaurant where we enjoyed both dinner and the hotel's complimentary breakfast.
We stayed one night I. August with my family 2 boys 10 and 7 years, and we stopped in Bakersfield for the evening. I selected the hotel as it had great reviews and it had a pool. Our experience was poor because the pool was very green ( algae )and very dirty.
For a business trip, I looked for a hotel room with a little work area and found the Hill House from Best Western not too far from my next morning destination. I was very surprised to get the room where I really asked for, clean, comfy. Sad enough I didn't have time for the pool but good to see that this was located away from the road. Staff was very friendly and told me that the Mexican Restaurant was open till 8.30pm and what is not easier just to walk in this family owned restaurant who serves also breakfast in the morning. Anyway food was decent, and had a great time. I will be back
After checking in at 9pm I went to the room to find the A/C off and the main room was 90 degrees and the kitchen area through double french doors was easily over 100 degrees with No A/C in that room. It took three hours to cool the room down. Ridicules. So the next morning I set the thermostat to 75 degrees to only return to the room with the unit OFF and 89 degrees in the room. So yes I checked out about 7pm and was charged for that night. The girl at check out said this was normal and there unit's are programmed to turn off after 30 minutes of no movement in the rooms. Do yourself a favor and stay somewhere else.
The room was very clean and staff were professional and made sure all of our needs were met. The breakfast was great. This was the first time I had a full breakfast where I could choose off a menu what I wanted to eat. Overall I was very happy with my stay.
Google maps sent us through some sketchy neighborhoods, so we were a bit doubtful as to how the hotel would be! But when we arrived we found a little oasis tucked in between those neighborhoods and the convention center. The room was clean and was quite large compared to many. The decor was plantation style with wide shutters on the siding glass door which opened onto a little nicely landscaped patio overlooking the riverwalk. The pool was nearby and all the grounds were lush and green. The restaurant specializes in Mexican seafood and was delicious!! The waitress came off as kind of brusque at first but in reality it was more of a sassy kind of teasing---that was really quite funny. The food arrived quickly and was very, very good. Breakfast was good but the choices were limited to a few combos with no substituting.
By no means was this Hotel a time capsule.....What was a blast from the past was the pleasant surroundings and the terrific service afforded us at this wonderful place. Upon arrival we were greeted in a truely friendly manner in a spotless lobby by a terrific person. She informed me of the hotel amenities and the schedule for breakfast. Our room was huge and super clean. The vanity was seperate from the bathroom with made getting ready for the day much easier for two. The suite like room had a small sofa, a very comfortable bed, micro wave and fridge. Good lighting and nice TV rounded out the living space. The grounds were well maintained and the pool was a welcome relief after a long day of driving. The full sit-down breakfast was very good. No mega carb buffet here. The service as well as the food was terrific. All in all our stay was enjoyable and felt as if were were back in the 70's or 80's when good friendly service and a nice place to stay were expected and provided. Well done Hill House. BTW...do try one of the local Basque food restaurants while in Bakersfield. Lots of fun and a unique dining experience.
We stayed a Bakersfield for 2 nights and thought it was great value and location. The room was well appointed, roomy and comfortable. A cooked brekky was included (it was small-ish but still very adequate). The staff were excellent and overall location for a first time visitor was perfect (easy to find), excellent parking, over the road from the local Visitor Centre (also excellent) and a short walk to a nice bar that did good bar snacks. It also has a pool - important in Bakersfield. :) Very comfortable and pleasant. Would definitely stay here again.
The hotel, staff and food service were excellent. Mary in the restaurant was very, very helpful, pleasant, and friendly. The dinner was outstanding ( Shrimp scampi style ). The full breakfast was very good, hot and served in a timely manner.
We recently stayed here while attending a surprise birthday party in Bakersfield. The hotel is conveniently located, stay was friend, pet friendly and nice rooms. Breakfast was included and I would stay again next time in Bakersfield.
We showed up at the hotel at night and the bars around the perimeter make it a bit frightening! It could use a little sprucing up to make it more friendly to guests coming from far locales who are not familiar with the area. Our room smelled - as did the hall - and there were bugs crawling around the sink area, but luckily not on the bed!! The bed itself was comfy so I guess that's what matters in a hotel.
We stayed at Hill House on our vacation. The experience was wonderful. The room was big, and very clean. The property is quite large with several buildings. The hotel was quiet and restful. The main building is beautifully decorated and could be used as an events center. Wonderful Experience.
We are from Canada and had a trip to California this summer. We stayed in the hotel on Thu, 21 June 2018 and I only glad it was one night! Our car was parked just next door to the lobby entrance and despite this, it was robbed overnight. No idea how they opened a car - guess they used professional tools to do it such quickly and easily. No alarm emerged. Thanks for that - at least no broken window glass and the problems with insurance. I called the police - they accepted my report and no follow-ups AT ALL since then! Looks like no one (hotel stuff and Merced Police Department) even care to review the hotel's video surveillance and follow-ups. Is it normal activity there? Nobody care? Report 18-35155 - car robbery near Bakersfield Best Western Plus Hill House Most frustrated - no one from hotel management even called us to just say "we are apologies " words. Nothing REALLY valuable were stolen but the incident gave us huge concern about our safety in Best Western hotels. Never again! Folks - make sure you do not leave anything in your car overnight!
I always stay here when I visit my family. It is clean, the staff are pleasant, the room is very comfortable with everything I need, including an iron and ironing board, hair dryer, refrig, coffee maker, pool, free wi-fi, and free breakfast. I usually sleep in and miss breakfast but it has been of high quality in the past. There is a Mexican restaurant next door that I like very much.
We arrived late for an overnight stay on our southbound trip. We stayed in building across the bridge from main building and restaurant. Room was clean and spacious. Stayed upstairs by request (no elevator seen). Staff was wonderful at the front desk. I did, indeed, receive my loyalty prize. Air worked great. The breakfast was cook to order with nine or so menu selections (no substitutions). The food was very good. Only drawback is the location as a way-station on a Hwy 99 drive. Google maps gave the best directions. The value was great and I would stay here again as a Costco, with Gas Station, is easy to get to on the way back to 99.
Clean hotel, with a made-to-order, no frills hot breakfast, that accommodated our three quiet, small dogs for a small fee per pet. We couldn't have asked for a more reasonable stay. We were in town visiting family, and because of a medical emergency, they also had a half-day rate that we utilized to stay a little longer and rest while relatives were at the hospital. We would definitely stay again.
If you absolutely positively CANNOT get out of going to Bakersfield and you gotta stay, stay here. I have had occasion to go there a number of times over the years, and since, I am from there, and my friends and family have moved or passed away, I have to get a hotel when I go back home. This is the best. First, the location. This is centrally located, on Truxtun Avenue, right in the middle of Bako. It is across the street from the Marriot, the library, and two walkable blocks from the Rabo bank Arena and the Civic Auditorium. And all the really great restaurants are nearby: there is a good Mexican restaurant/bar in the hotel, and around the corner is the legendary Mexicali. About a mile away is the world famed Woolgrowers Basque restaurant as well as Noriegas. The Sinaloa is close, as well. And it is quiet. Aside from the lovely sweet coo of the train from the tracks nearby, there is no endless noise of the 99 freeway, and the 6 or 8 lanes of bumper to bumper 70 mph traffic which goes all night. Quiet. Peaceful. Secure: The entire property has a decorative fence around it. There is only one entrance. The staff is excellent, friendly, efficient, and caring. The property itself is lovely, and comprised of three buildings, two bulidings house the hotel separated by a canal, and reached by a quaint bridge. The main bulilding houses the lobby, a day room, the restaurant, Manuel's Mariscos. It is all fenced. The pool and pool area, is beautiful, and spacious, with umbrellaed tables and chairs and lounges surrounded by palm trees. There is a lovely lobby area, a workout room, and a Mexican restaurant right off the lobby, and you can get vouchers for a REAL breakfast, either Mexican (yum) or American or Continental. Had them all and they equally delicious. The rooms (I've stayed there twice) are spacious, and nicely appointed, (although a little.....beige) but immaculate, and the bed was very comfortable. There is an inroom mini fridge and a microwave. One thing I really love are the plantation shutters, because they are so clean, and you can open the top level while leaving the bottom closed. I like sleeping with the window open and this is ideal, because I can have fresh air and privacy. There is an ice dispenser and vending machine downstairs. The only , and I do mean the only negative, is there is no elevator, so you will have to haul your case upstairs, although the staff will help. Don't overpack! There is evidently a meeting room, and the lobby is spacious with couches and tables All in all, this is my home away from home: ironically I grew up down the street. Seriously, Stay. Here. You'll love it
When you travel, either for work or pleasure you hope that you, your loved ones and your possessions are safe. Even though they told us not to leave anything of value in our cars - which I did not - my passenger side glass was broken into and I personally saw SEVERAL other cars with broken windows and glass on the ground next to them that wasn't there before. Obviously they know there is a problem to warn us but we were told the security cameras are not working at this time but would be operational “soon”. Staff didn't seem to care and all we were told is the police would not come for something so minor like this. No apology for something that must be a known issue. I called and filed a police report with the Bakersfield PD. 661-327-7111. It's sad because this is actually a nice hotel.
Excellent place to stay with excellent food in the restaurant. Would recommend to anyone. The rooms were very large, clean, and nice. We loved the decor and had a very good television. The bed was great!
From the time we arrived until the time we left everything was first class. It was so nice to be given tickets for a breakfast from a menu instead of the standard motel fare. The staff at the hotel and the restaurant made you feel right at home. This Best Western is one of the best in our opinion.
Not bad value for the most part, but we were highly disappointed with the breakfast, which came with an obligatory surcharge of $10. This became a point of contention with us, and while I initially thought that this had been resolved with management, we apparently had different ideas of what a satisfactory adjustment was. In the meantime, my messages to Best Western Corporate are being ignored. With a broad selection of affordable options under the Hilton banner in Bakersfield, I'll probably go back to using them on my next trip.
Recently updated rooms with a good size. No odors. Breakfast was ordered from menu and included in the stay. Good service from staff. Ask for room with no one in room above you. Lots of nice restaurants nearby.
Traveling across country we chose the Best Western Plus and we were not disappointed. The front desk was friendly and informative and our room, which had recently been remodeled was perfect. Well appointed and very clean. Really liked the extra key card safety getting into the building. The only negative was the breakfast coupon at the adjoining restaurant. Who gives one slice of toast with a breakfast?
I travel alot for work and am always looking for pet friendly hotels. This property in particular did a nice job of keeping a designated pet friendly room clean and free of any wear and tear. I hope more pet owner travelers will respect these hotels and their pets so that more hotels will open up services to more pet friendly rooms. I often hear of nightmare pet experiences from hotel clerks and can understand why they would be hesitant. I treat my rooms with my pet the same as i would at my home and it makes it an awesome travel experience to enjoy a hotel room stay that takes care of the people and their pets.
If you have need of an accessible room DO NOT STAY HERE. The accessible bathroom was no bigger than a regular bathroom and the accessible shower was the size of a phone booth. Beds were terrbile. Room was no larger than a regular room, had difficulty navigating the wheelchair in this room. Desk service was good and the reception staff were friendly. Would never stay here again.
I didn't plan on spending the night in Bakersfield so I wasn't able to pre-plan my stay at this hotel. Fortunately, I was able to access TripAdvisor on my phone and chose this BW hotel based on traveler's recommendations and price. I arrived in town very late after a long day of traveling and it was after 1am by the time I was was checked into my room. When I called the front desk and asked for a late check-out, they graciously granted me my request. My room was large, nicely organized and clean. They have a free breakfast from menu at the hotel's restaurant from 6:30am to 9:30am which I did not have the time to take advantage of this offer.
Great place to stay! Quiet, friendly staff, great restaurant and bar. Very clean grounds and accommodations! Superb hostess, Mary, in the restaurant. A little off freeway access but well worth it. Only a couple of miles to I-5 freeway onramp upon leaving.
Had a wonderful visit considering why w had to come down to the area would highly recommend the hotel and the amenities... The staff was very nice and friendly.... Rooms were not bad... Would definitely stay there again
We had a very nice, good sized room with a 2 seater couch and coffee table. The bed was very comfortable which is always a plus. There is a restaurant on site which is Mexican/seafood. We ate here and the food was very nice. Try the garlic shrimp if you are a seafood lover. A cooked breakfast was supplied and was also in the restaurant. You choose one option plus one drink from the menu. Quite tasty. The reception staff were very friendly. A comfortable stay.
This hotel is by far my favorite that I have stayed at! The value is incredible for $99 you have a business room with a very comfy bed, and usb power outlets!, you don't have to bring in your power adapter! 99 dollars is a heck of a deal for a best western plus room!
Excellent place to stay, close to the Kern County Fairgrounds where our event was held. Clean, quiet, comfortable and reasonably priced. Easy access from the 99 highway. Close to the performing arts center.
I could not get any hot water after one and half hours. All they said, no one else is complaining. They did move me to another building. I wonder how many people later on in the evening complained about not having hot water.
Had multiple discrimination incidents with hotel staff due to my disabilities, an incident with a restaurant server attached to the hotel that flipped on me regarding my service animal and tried to seat us in a corner away from the rest of the restaurant to isolate us. When multiple requests were given to speak to a supervisor instead the Owner/GM called my place of work while I was on vacation/medical leave and harassed me by lying to my General Manager while I was going into surgery. Both of our rooms were infested with bed bugs and when this was brought to the staff attention they switched our rooms but then we watched them change the sheets and rent the room out to the next guest. I provided doctor paperwork with the infected bites and two different medications I had to be put on due to this infestation. The GM never called me despite multiple requests and each morning we went to breakfast we were harassed about my caretaker that is required to travel with me due to multiple severe military-service connected disabilities. The hotel never tried to make anything right and instead retaliated against me to my management team at my second job while I was in California getting surgery even though I live in North Dakota. I had to contact the Department of Justice regarding Americans with Disabilities act due to the massive amount of discrimination we experienced, not only by myself, but by my family and my caretaker as well from Hill House hotel staff.
We arrived later in the evening without a reservation. The staff was friendly and helpful. Our room was very nice. There was a great breakfast (better than many). Parking lot seemed a little dark but everything seemed safe.
I often would stay here for work once a month for two years. The front desk's people were nice, the rooms were clean, and the location was convenient to restaurants and my vendors. I didn't even mind when they renovated the rooms and when they stopped the free breakfast and gave everyone vouchers for the excellent breakfast at the Mexican restaurant. However, when the refused to give me a refund or change my reservation date to the following week, I swore I would never go back. You can stay at a much nice place for less at the Marriott across the street, where they will treat you with respect instead of taking your money without an apology.
Don't drive here after dark if you can avoid it, it was difficult to navigate around with the GPS and being unfamiliar with the surrounding roadways once off the freeway. Once getting here, you're met with an iron gate which locks at night. While they have a hotel and convention center across the street, this hotel sits in the middle of a depressed city, challenged for food and economic prosperity. Once inside the hotel, on our first night there, the smog from LA made its presence known. The sounds of nearby racing police cars and a search helicopter flashing its lights and brushing past us on it's tracking caused us to want to check out immediately, but go where? We were tired from the 6 hour drive from Sacramento. We slept with one eye open, had a simple breakfast served to order downstairs in the small restaurant. The closer is got to 11am, the more the kitchen staff watched our every move. We were told to leave once it was 11am. This hotel and its location might please others, but it wasn't our style.
This hotel is conveniently located across the street from Bakersfield Amtrak station within walking distance of downtown businesses. Nicely appointed guest rooms, friendly staff, and even offers a complimentary sit down breakfast service. Always stay here when in Bakersfield. No disappointments.
We stayed at a lot of Best Western's on our recent multi-state-car-trip-adventure but regrettably, the Bakersfield Hill House was one of our least favorites. Observations below: PROs: - Friendly staff - The oatmeal breakfast option was exceptionally good with a whole plate of fruit included. - Bed was comfortable - Room located in a secured building (although doors propped open all morning long when checking out...could have been a guest?!) CONs: - Noisy room that was smelly/stuffy upon entering. Couldn't open the windows to air out. - No breakfast buffet - just preset options. - Dispensers for soap/shampoo. (I just prefer small containers) - Not sure of the source, but when we left in the morning, the "outside" air was really "stinky"! NOTE: I think the source was off Best Western property meaning, out of their control. Conclusion: Don't foresee spending another night in Bakersfield any time soon but if I did, would likely consider a different budget option.
My husband and recently traveled to las Vegas for our Anniversary. We stayed in Bakersfield too and from Vegas. This hotel is currently being renovated. The Room was nice and clean and the bed was comfortable. It was across the stree From the large Bakersfield Library. We had a nice time visiting
Stayed here for one night on a driving holiday. It was fine as a stopover. Room was big and had all the amenities we needed including good Wi-fi, coffee maker and microwave. Only concern we had was that the bathroom floor was in need of a good clean but the rest of the room wasn't dirty. We chose not to eat in the evening in the hotel restaurant as it wasn't very inviting but there isn't much within walking distance so be prepared to drive if you want to eat out. We did use the restaurant for the included breakfast and it was surprisingly enjoyable. However we did not like the limited set menu arrangement, i.e. not a buffet choice and it was coffee OR juice, not both. Overall it was a good stopping off point but not a destination in itself.
My husband and I booked the hotel ahead when we were traveling to Palm Springs on Feb 18 2018. The lady at check in was very good, friendly and helpful. Our room was different matter! The bedding was clean but the room itself was very shabby. The sink had very little water coming out, so had to brush our teeth in the tub. The tub had a big pink mark on the edge, and the wall paper was peeling off. We have stayed at many Best Westerns and Best Western Plus but this certainly didn't meet the standards we have experienced in the past. The hotel was situated in the Center of the old town, and had to remove our bikes as the area wasn't safe. The breakfast was served in a Mexican Restaurant that was attached to the hotel. It was a sit down with a menu to choose from. The food was very poor, and had a choice of juice or coffee, not both.... we left most of our food. As you can guess we would not stay there again!!!! Arrived on Amtrak San Joaquin from Oakland and was literally a 2 minute walk across to the hotel. Clean and spacious room and included breakfast at Casa De Mariscos was cooked to order and adequate. Quiet tranquil location and would certainly stay here again.
There is a restaurant attached to this, so besides my usual expectations from Best Western, this makes it an exceptional one. I only had breakfast, but if that was representative of all their food, I'll have to plan on dinner there next time.
Our last night of our (includes husband and service dog) January 5,000 mile trip. We always stop in Bakersfield to visit friends. I entered the lobby, gave the staff my name, and advised her of my reservation, asked if she could get things started as I ran to the ladies room. I returned expecting to see paperwork on the counter for me... nope, had to wait while two other customers were taken care of. OK, I can maybe understand that. No fuss made. Staff not friendly while not rude. The rooms are in a separate building. We accessed a luggage cart and got every thing into the fragrant filled building. If you have issues with fragrances, this is not the place for you. I immediately wanted to walk our dog and had used my last poop bag at Best Western Arizona. There were no dispensers on the property and no receptacles for used bags. I visited the lobby to inquire about these pet bags; they had no poop bags, handed bags for the small garbage cans in the rooms and made sure I knew that I was responsible for picking up after my dog. While walking my pet in the small grass area, I noted a lot of mushrooms that, to me, are a safety issue for children and pets. There is only one exterior garbage can outside the building so everything goes in it. The hotel is on a corner near downtown with a gate at the side street (open during the day) as well as the entrance. I saw local traffic using the parking lot, cars and walkers, that left me uncomfortable. Room was clean and comfortable. Everything worked. Fragrance filled! Next morning we had free breakfast in the Mexican restaurant on premises. It is obviously a family restaurant. We ordered from the menu and the food was good. Preparing to leave, I spoke with the happy young lady in the lobby. Shared my concerns about the hotel not being pet friendly. She let me know the owner had been told before so probably doesn't care. I also shared my concerns about about the parking lot being used by the locals, cars and pedestrians that left me very uncomfortable. She did feel that was a concern. My friends who live in the community, couldn't believe we stayed in a hotel downtown!
This was my second stay at this hotel in downtown Bakersfield, directly across the street from Amtrak. I came here early September 2017 to look at checkout rental homes in the area and also booked the same room type, King. Bed business room. This stay I was able to try the free morning breakfast, which I will go into detail at the end. The hotel is spread out into 3 separate two-story interior access buildings that require your key card to access. I highly recommend the 2nd building as it's quieter and not connected to the office and restaurant. The 3rd building is a bit far, sitting on the other side of the canal and a bit sketchy to walk from your room to the morning breakfast early morning when it's still dark. There are no elevators on site so make sure to ask for first level rooms if you can't climb the interior stairs or have lots of luggage. I requested the second floor, which offers vaulted ceilings. Rooms and hotel in general have a rustic homely design. It's worth the extra $5 to pay for a business room if you just need one bed as it comes with a love seat sofa, whereas the regular king bed room just offers a chair. Also, the business room offers dispensers on the wall for hand soap, lotion, body wash, shampoo and conditioner. Lots of open outdoor space for smoking. The hotel underwent a renovation in the last 2 years so everything from decor to furniture are modern. Nice size TV with microwave and mini fridge inside the cabinet out of view. Morning breakfast is in the restaurant and feels like you walked into grandmas house as the servers are very friendly, informal, and your food arrives very fast. The menu, however, is very limited to just 5 options for breakfast and the portions are VERY small like you would feed a 9 year old. The “American Breakfast” consisted of just 2 medium eggs, 2 bacon slices, 1 piece of toast, and literally 2-3 bites of breakfast potatoes. Several guests were complaining about the portion sizes and weak coffee. My orange juice tasted like Tang since it was so watered down. I seen no one leave a tip, which requires cash. I uploaded a video on YouTube, titled “Best Western Plus Hill House Inn Bakersfield.” Be sure to watch it for an inside look. I uploaded several pictures on my last review.
We had a king bedroom and were delighted with the size and cleanliness. Free parking, pool and breakfast. The gym machines need servicing as you can't move the weight pins, but otherwise an excellent stay.
My husband and I stayed here on our Christmas trip to Bakersfield. Very cool historic building, very close to many of the main attractions in Bakersfield. Walking distance to everything I wanted to go to including a hip Tiki Bar called Tiki Ko over on K street. Beautiful lobby, huge rooms and comfy beds. Totally will stay here again.
I was a woman traveling alone & the room had double locks so I felt safe. The bed was comfy, the shower very nice and the internet worked well. Nice breakfast as part of the stay in the restaurant next door. All in all a very nice stay.
We stayed at the BW Hill House in Bakersfield, CA on our trip to Vancouver from Phoenix. The hotel is older but well kept, the room was clean and all amenity's worked as they should. The internet seemed to work well and the hot breakfast was offered on time and well prepared. I would not hesitate to stay at the Hill House again.
Hotel is only average and is showing its age. The carpets worn and general décor very dated. Still have cheap plastic glasses in the room. However, the attached restaurant (different owner) was excellent.
This is a lovely hotel with great service at front desk, clean and tastefully decorated rooms with microwave and refrigerator. We were traveling with our dog and there was a $15 pet fee. We were tired and were grateful for the small Mexican restaurant attached to the hotel with very good food and $6 Margaritas. The morning breakfast included with the room rate was at this restaurant where we sat and ordered our breakfast which was delicious.
The accommodations were nice, simple and updated. Wi-Fi worked good. Best breakfast we have had in a while, simple but perfect way to start the day, you can tell the chef and wait staff like their jobs. Front desk staff also very friendly. Overall room was clean, not perfect but clean. Bed was comfortable and we slept well.
Stopped here on a whim at 3AM during a tiring trip down I-5 to Los Angeles from Yosemite. So glad I did. The overnight clerk offered me a late checkout up front, without my asking. The quality and size of the room was fantastic, and included so many thoughtful details - four USB charging outlets, fast free internet service, and high-quality plush bath towels. For cleanliness and comfort, this was four-star quality lodging at less than $100. Would consider staying in Bakersfield again just to use this hotel. It's that good.
The business class rooms are huge ,clean and very comfortable. Enjoyed our breakfast at the restaurant. The owners are very hospitable and accommodating. Will stop here on our yearly trips to the desert SW.
This is the most disappointing Best Western I have ever been to. Everything was for sale including water. Other Best Western Hotels give you free bottled water. They even have free cookies at check in after a long drive. Coffee or tea was available in our rooms and in the lobby.
Clean, beautiful facility with an incredibly friendly staff...great restaurant on the grounds that also does a sit down breakfast instead of the usual buffet. We loved the fact we didn't have to drive to find dinner.
We arrived tired and hungry at 7pm on Thanksgiving. The manager called and called until she found a restaurant that was open - we ordered takeout and relaxed in a beautiful room with our pups. So nice to be welcomed that way! Happy holidays, indeed.
This hotel was very convenient for us to stay in. It was in downtown and was within walking distance to restaurants, central park, and the ice skating rink/aquatic center. There is a restaurant and bar in the hotel. The free hot breakfast is ordered off the menu in the restaurant.
This hotel was a good solution while we were traveling with our small dog from Southern to Northern California. The hotel was clean and comfortable with a reasonable rate for the room and pet fee. We will stay here again.
Staff are friendly and professional. The facilities are clean and comfortable. Breakfast in the restaurant was different than I'm used to but was fresh and well presented. My stay was only overnight but if I'd had more time I would've stayed longer and used more of the facilities whilst exploring the surroundings of the Best Western.
Great property, Great restaurant attached on site. Will stay again when in Bakersfield. The breakfast is "order off the menu" in the restaurant. Nice touch with very friendly staff. The dinner in the restaurant was excellent (Mexican cuisine). Hotel staff was equally friendly and helpful.
Great rooms with a wonderfully attentive staff. If Mixican food suits your taste, there's a great restaurant on site which is separately owned. This is where breakfast is served and it's fresh made and ordered off a menu. Can't say enough about this Bakersfield secret... Enjoy!!
The hotel was very nice. It is clean and very well cared for. The restaurant attached to the hotel is great and the staff is exceptional. Breakfast was also provided at the restaurant and it was wonderful. I will certainly stay there again.
Greeted excellent. I ask for an upper floor and was able to get it. Very clean rooms and nice . I ate at the resturant here at the hotel. And what can I say is no need to drive off site. The food and service was outstanding! I'll be here the next time. The only glitch is the cable signal was not good ( maybe the weather) . Note it's across from the Amtrak station and the convention center. Enjoy I did !!!!
A little off the beaten track but worth the drive. Reasonably priced, great for business travel and very comfortable rooms. I have stayed here twice and will do so again. Especially like the fact that a sit-down breakfast with wait staff is included in the price.
This hotel location is good, the rooms are clean and the staff is fantastic. There is a good restaurant that is connected so you don't have to drive all over looking for somewhere to eat. Free internet is also a plus.
Very nice hotel and close to downtown amenities. The on-site restaurant is a plus. The room was very nice, quiet, but they don't have an elevator so if you stay on the 2nd floor you will have to lug your luggage upstairs.
If your looking for a place to stay it's not bad but the sheets our itchy and their is no elevator in one of the buildings (which by the way was not told to us when we chose the second floor room). Overall not bad.
Have stayed here for the past four years and would not consider anywhere else while in Bakersfield! The rooms and facility are always very clean and have all of the things needed for a comfortable experience. The staff are all friendly and competent and insure a pleasant stay. Manuel's Casa de Marisco restaurant connected to the hotel is a favourite place to eat for us and the family that owns the restaurant make the meal a memorable experience.Terrific grilled shrimp and chilli relleno. The hotel is a reasonable place to stay and is expanding in the coming year with more rooms and larger lobby in the plans.
The Hill House Best Western is clean, fresh, and has a warm welcoming atmosphere. An extra special touch is the free full breakfast in the adjoining restaurant. The food was fast, delicious, and the service was OUTSTANDING!!
Nice, older hotel; Very convenient to AMTRAK; beds too soft; generally well maintained; cockroach in bathtub; Decent Mexican restaurant in the hotel. Generally very quiet, but you could hear the AMTRAK whistle. I liked hearing the AMTRAK whistle.
The staff is great, hotel and room were beautiful. A sit down breakfast comes with your stay. The food and service were wonderful. Although there was a Hot Rod show and a Barbershop Quartet competition during our stay, the restaurant made every effort to serve us in a timely manor.
The Best Western Plus Hill House exceeded our expectations. The staff went above and beyond to make us comfortable. Check in was quick and as a BW rewards member I got my points, and they even had some complimentary drinks at the front desk. The rooms have been recently renovated and look great. The bed was very comfortable and we slept like babies. If you need to go to downtown Bakersfield, stay here, you will not be disappointed. They are very well priced, and an excellent value for what you pay, they could definitely charge more for these rooms! I wouldn't stay anywhere else!
I generally stay at BW, and I have yet to be disappointed. The same was true with our stay here. My husband and I did not have reservations and were heading north from the Salton Sea area. We ultimately wanted to drive through the Central Valley via Highway 99. The front desk quickly found us a room. I sense that this is an older motel, but it was clean and comfortable--and also quiet. We liked the breakfast in the restaurant. It was much better than the average meal in a hotel breakfast room. We also liked the location near the old downtown, where we found a wonderful restaurant.
This hotel met with all expectations. Service was outstanding, room was clean and comfortable and complimentary breakfast in the adjoining restaurant was an added bonus. The menu allowed for choices to satisfy every option.
The Hill House in Bakersfield is one of the best I've stayed at. I liked that it was a pet friendly hotel, even though I did not have a pet with me. I will suggest this hotel to all I know. The room was decorated nicely and the bed was very comfortable.
Nice place to stay in Bakersfield. Not the Ritz, but a good value for the price ($100 including taxes, fees and breakfast for 2). Breakfast however was terrible. This hotel used to have a nice buffet breakfast, but now gives chits to a Mexican restaurant next door that has both terrible service and even worse food. We did not know it was possible to ruin scrambled eggs.
The hotel was very clean. Staff very wonderful. The Bar/ restaurant was great. Bartender gave great service. The food was very tasty. Was like home cooking. Will be staying here again when I a in the area.
This BW is in a quiet part of town yet close enough to everything. Rooms are spacious, breakfast excellent. Very attractive motel! Bar on site and open in evening. Large lobby with 24 hour coffee. i will stay here again.
Stayed at this Best Western hotel for one night in Oct. Was pretty impressed with check in staff and check out staff. Both very professional and knowledgeable about the area. Very friendly folks. Room Clean and a good size. WiFi worked well and quite fast.
We we were only there for the night. And had to return home that morning. However we could tell this hotel was very great quality and staffed with quality people. We wished we would have been able to stay longer.
When we walked into our room we surprised how beautiful and stylish our room was. The paint color and bedroom furniture are very up-to-date and clean. We stayed on a Saturday night but the neighborhood was quiet.
This place is a gem between San Francisco and L.A. I've stayed a few times. Clean, comfortable, modern rooms. Ultra-friendly service. Reasonably quiet. And just $100 per night. The receptionist recommended the River Walk when I told her I needed to stretch my legs after driving for six hours and it was the perfect place to take a sunset walk. Then I had a delicious meal for $6 at the new Flame Broiler restaurant. One perfect night in Bakersfield.
My family and I have been staying at this property for many, many years and it continues to be the best location for our personal needs, which is usually visiting with family members. The rooms were recently "updated" and are spacious and comfortable. This hotel is located across the street from the Amtrak Station, close to a large cinema complex, and just down the street from the Rabobank Arena. We have some favorite eateries that are very close as well, like the Mexicali, Casa Munoz, and Luigi's. The staff has always been helpful and are knowledgeable about the local events.
We stay here on every visit to Bakersfield, newly renovated rooms, new beds, clean and sanitary pet friendly rooms with wood floors are our favorite along with a friendly and courteous staff. Attached Mexican restaurant has great food and margaritas and also serves a delicious complimentary breakfast so you cannot go wrong making this choice. The rooms are very clean and comfortable with all amenities one might want.
Under construction starting at 7 AM breakfast was next-door separate restaurant homeless population surrounding the hotel did not feel safe leaving my vehicle in the parking lot out of the way to any local restaurants
Usually BW is. A great place to stay but on this property we found roaches in the bathroom and notified the front desk. They said it would be taken care of, on our return trip (3 days later) they gave us the same room and said the problem was taken care of, it wasn't!
I was born and raised in Bakersfield but live in Los Angeles. When I'm in town this is where I stay. I've tried other motels but always come back to this one. It is centrally located and there is an excellent Mexican restaurant next door that my family and I have been going to for 20 years. The Hill House BW is one of Bakersfield's treasures. JO
I'm a frequent traveler and have stayed at dozens of hotels over the past 3 years, mostly Best Western's as I'm a Rewards member. I booked this hotel for one night so I could explore Bakersfield more since I'm considering a move. The room rates of all hotels in Bakersfield are much cheaper than other areas. I called the front desk just before noon to inquire about an early check in because I took Amtrak, which is directly across the street. They were very kind to let me check in so I didn't have to wait in the hot sun for 2 hours. The hotel is in two buildings which require guest key card to access for added security. The theme felt real home like. My room was a king bed business room which had a love seat couch. I was given room 229 on the second floor overlooking the rear parking lot. I didn't notice any elevators so it's best to request a first floor if you can't make it up the stairs. There is a seafood Mexican restaurant on site connected to the lobby. This is where free morning breakfast is served. There is no breakfast buffet but rather a menu that you select from. Gratuity is not included for your server. The menu is given to you at check in. Unfortunately I didn't get to try morning breakfast because my Amtrak train departed at 6am. Pool is located outdoors and looked welcoming. I liked that the window opened wide however night time is noisy with sirens and people doing donuts in the dead end street behind the hotel. I still slept well. My room was clean and recently updated. There was a Coke vending machine on the first floor which accepted credit cards. Within walking distance is a theater and a few museums. I highly recommend this hotel and would return again. I've uploaded several pics including the breakfast menu.
Hotel near train station, movie theaters, restaurants. Revamped hotel rooms slept well. The lobbies could use an update but overall good deal which included a full breakfast made to order at an attached restaurant.
friendly welcome good value for money nothing special clean comfortable room nice breakfast included good for stopover 2.5 hrs from lax airport on way to Yosemite will stay again if in area there is awwiming pool did not use
I already reviewed this hotel as very good. I have stayed here many times in the past. What brings me back, aside from being a BW member, is the friendly and caring staff. It is conveniently located to many things downtown, as well as being centrally located to going to different parts of Bakersfield - since it is very spread out. There are vagrants in the downtown, everywhere really, which is no surprise to anyone who has been in Bakersfield - as well as other places in CA. The hotel has now built a fence, and is going to install a gate to the entrance/exits to deter those who are not guests from crossing through the parking lot. I really appreciate the dedication this hotel has towards its guest's comfort. I like the dining style of breakfast. The waitresses are always nice. I especially enjoy speaking with Mary, who has been a waitress there for years. She is a professional is her job, fast, efficient and always fun to talk with. I will stay there again, as I have over the last 10 years.
Check in was effortless, room was nice, Air Conditioner worked. Fridge was cold. Overall its a nice place. Checkout was easy even at 4am. Its central to anything in the area. If your need to be in Bakersfield this place should be on your list.
Stayed overnight recently. Great location, very close to Rabobank Arena. Checked into Room 108. Found a roach on the bed in the middle of the night. Upon checking out I informed front desk. Only response was "Sorry" and "property just got sprayed"....won't be returning here. Avoid at all cost.
I was a bit disappointed that there was NO elevator to the second floor rooms BUT when I went up to check the room, it was very clean and I decided to stay. I have a minor handicap that restricts too many flights of stairs (not enough to always book a first floor handicap room). The stay was pleasant and the room was cool with a/c. Breakfast was limited but just fine. I'd stay again.
The fitness room was pleasant to have available, it somewhat limited in equipment. According to the staff, the nearest laundry facility is "a few miles" away. It would have been nice (but not a deal breaker) to have one on-site. It's nice to tumble press clothing that's been a suitcase, and not have to iron all of it. The supplied ironing equipment did work well however. The included breakfast is thru a voucher at the restaurant on-site. I had the best beef fajitas for dinner there. The air conditioning easily maintained a 68 degree room temperature on a 107 degree day.
We had a lovely room. We had dinner at the onsite restaurant, and it was outstanding. The next morning we had breakfast at the same restaurant - included in the room price - and it was also delicious. And the room price was VERY reasonable. Highly recommended.
This is a beautiful property. I wish all BW were patterned after this one. I would never stay anywhere else! Amazing staff from the Desk to the housekeepers! Excellent Job! This property is to be commended!!
I haven't been here in a couple of years it was a nice surprise to see my room was remodeled it was a nice and comfortable with lots of outlets for laptop and cell phone. Breakfast was served by the Mexican. Restaurant next door and was quite good
If you want a pleasant stay in a well managed hotel with restaurant availability on site this is the place to stay in downtown Bakersfield. The staff is capable and efficient,as well as knowledgeable. The restaurant wait staff is pleasant and efficient and the food was great.
We enjoyed a Saturday night here- the room was large, well-appointed and clean. It was also away from the freeways and slurry retail strips, making for a quiet night. Finally, the free breakfast was a substantial offering in a genuine restaurant setting.
Very nice hotel, large comfortable room with a sofa and king bed. Good outside swimming pool. Very friendly staff. Excellent value for money. Mexican restaurant on site had good food for dinner and breakfast. Cannot find any faults at all.
I rarely stay anywhere other than Best Western. I am rarely disappointed and the Hill House is always a pleasure. I like the layout of the rooms and the flooring in the bath areas. Very good WI-FI connection and the TV has both captions and a sleep timer. It is the hot time of the year and the A/C was excellent.
I really enjoyed my stay at the Best Western Plus Hill House Hotel. The staff was GREAT! The hotel is clean and up-to-date and the bed was new and very comfortable. I am a corporate customer and this BW always treats me like I own the place. They are also located right in the middle of Downtown Bakersfield, right across the street from the Bakersfield Convention Center. If you find yourself in Bakersfield, I would highly recommend the BW Plus Hill House Hotel.
We have been traveling for two weeks and found we could not drive anymore that night! I got on Trip Advisor and found a gem! This hotel was perfect! The bed was so comfortable we didn't want to get up! The breakfast was very good. Definitely recommend to others!
Trip to Redwood camp. Handycap bathroom was excellent. Service was very good. Hotel was very clean and comfortable. Room door was tight and a little hard to open. Need some adjustment. Breakfast was good but I prefer buffet style breakfast with give us more choice.
I stayed here for business. I chose the hotel due to it being near the downtown area as that is where my business was to be conducted. The hotel experience was great. The beds were comfortable, the AC was cold and refreshing, and the pool was nice. The free breakfast from the Mexican Restaurant in the lobby was outstanding. The only downside was Bakersfield is kind of a drag for such a big city.
The location is perfect. Right in front of the amtrak station and a five minute walk to the rabobank arena. The location is very secure making you feel safe. They have a restaurant on site and its affordable and delicious. The staff at the restaurant not so great. A little moody but overall it was good.
I review hotels with observations of things like the air conditioner and soap dispenser and quality of sleep; the mattress. This review is for room 134 which has the shower soap and shampoo dispensing from devices hanging from the wall. And the air conditioner hangs under the window. In my opinion this makes the place a motel, not a hotel. The mattress is lumpy and and if it were in my house would be replaced. Immediately. The room itself was clean except in the little places. Like the corners of the shower. Or the sink top. The remote does not work on the TV set. I complained and asked for another and was told they could not help me. Really? They provide a free breakfast which is provided by Manuels Marisco Mexican restaurant right next door. Actually they are connected with an interior passageway so don't bother trying to use the outside door which is locked. After trying three doors you realize that it must be connected from the inside. Meanwhile you have worked up quite a sweat walking around outside trying the different doors. Once inside you meet some really indifferent and surly staff who obviously do not want to be working on a Sunday morning. As in a very curt " where's your coupon?". To be fair the Huevos Con Chorizo was very good but a smile from the staff would have been nice. It's an OK property but both the hotel and restaurant staff could be more helpful. There are a whole bunch of very nice hotels and motels, many for less money too, in Bakersfield and they will get my business in the future.
the owners have transformed all the rooms with new furniture, flooring, and paint. The contractor they hired paid a lot of attention to detail. The rooms are comfortable and well lit. Excellent value if wanting to stay near downtown Bakersfield, Ca.
I asked staff to help me with a billing issue. I was told only the manager could assist me. That's fine. Staff stated that the manager would call me back. Never happened. I phoned multiple times. A lack of a decision maker, and a lack of respect to return my calls is what you will find here. I felt like I was living inside an episode of the Three Stooges. We stayed here a few years ago. Beware, this part of a Burbank is heading to ghetto status. Stay at the Marriott if you have to stay in this area. It has a more secure feeling property. There also was makeup on the linens when we checked in. We asked if the room had been cleaned, "of course" was the response. If you like "ABC" linens, then this is the place for you. CONS: Location=poor Staff=poor Cleanliness=poor
The best hotel in Bakersfield nice staff I will defentintly stay again room was very nice front desk nice housekeeping nice and breakfast was nice value was good please check this place out well worth it
Room was fine for one night although the air conditioner was off when we entered the room and it was 107 outside. Furnishings were nice and room was clean. My real disappointment was with the breakfast. Many would like the restaurant style ordering however it made it difficult for me a gluten free eater and the wait staff was not friendly to the point of making us uncomfortable. I watched another family and could tell they felt the same. You were force to choose between coffee or OJ, no both at this Best Western and we were rushed to order and get out.
This place was very well located for events at the stadium next door. Rooms were updated and comfortable. I will stay at this location again. Staff was very nice and helpful. Restaurant food was good. Some of the wait staff was a little rude. Think she woke up on the wrong side of the bed.
Stopped here en route from Flagstaff to the Bay Area. This hotel is conveniently located and was a great place to unwind after a long drive on a scorchingly hot day. The staff are very pleasant and helpful. The breakfast is served in the restaurant next door. Other Trip Adviser comments notwithstanding, the breakfast was the best I've ever had at a BW Plus. The servers were first-rate, and the food was brilliant. Hill House: keep these folks!
They have updated the rooms and they are great. Very nice furnishings and very comfortable bed. They have also upgraded to the breakfast to a full breakfast from the old buffet in the lobby. The service and the food was very good. This is the best choice in Bakersfield.
The room upgrades really are excellent. From the new carpet to the new furniture to the great mattress. The staff is very welcoming and friendly as always. They have replaced the breakfast buffet with a full breakfast in the restaurant and it also was excellent plus the service is great.
We really emjpye the stay. We had the grilled shrimp at the attached restarant and it was terrific. Best food of our entire trip and we went to some high end restarants where we paid triple what we paid here.
Very friendly and best breakfast I've had included. Rooms had recently been updated and clean. Again breakfast was awesome made to order off a short menu. Nice pool off of canal. Not much around to walk to would be only negative.
Very nice place and nice folks. Bring cash because there is ATM, and don't count on meeting folks for breakfast. The room was clean and authentically dog-friendly. I would stay there again, but there is room for improvement.
Had a nice stay with my 4 children as we headed down to San Diego. We swam in the pool, watched a movie that night, and had a great breakfast in the morning for about $120. Was worth the break in the road trip.
Super clean and very helpful customer service Rebecca. Plenty of parking and also has a restaurant connected to the building that it's walking distance good Mexican food! And rate is also good must stay!
very good experience will return to this property again! clean, staff was helpful overall me and my family had so much fun beds are very comfortable location was perfect for the event that we went to just minutes from there, our early check in was just right for our event
Restaurant service needs improvement on his employees you don't get a refill on water coffee and that's why the restaurant needs to be open bar for everyone that comes to the hotel room is good and clean
Our air conditioner died so we called there for a room with our dogs. No problem, they said, and they were more than just accomodating. We had not been there for years, and I was a little apprehensive. What a beautiful place it has become. The room was splendid with a terrific location for our dogs. We were able to walk them on the river walk, since our room opened to the pool and the walkway. Clean, modern, well appointed and very, very comfortable. The breakfast was NOT buffet, but sit down with wait staff. Excellent breakfast. We could not have been more pleased with the staff and the property.
I have stayed at this motel at least 7 or 8 times while visiting my sister in Bakersfield. The rooms have always been very clean and meet my needs quite well (microwave, refrigerator, good lighting with plenty of outlets, comfortable bed, and so on). It is nice to see the same management year after year-they are very friendly and helpful! The swimming pool is clean, and is a welcome addition for the summer heat! My reservation is made directly to the motel or the Best Western website (rather than a motel service (which costs additional money).
Travelling through Bakersfield so decided to stop for a couple of days and visit the area. Hotel located in quiet district, seems to be mostly offices. Shortage of local eating places though. Had the first night in the attached Mex restaurant ok but not great. Room was good and quiet, except for occasional dog. Plenty of parking with good disabled access. Overall location appeared safe.
Great place to stay! Convenient location, easy to find and near the revitalized downtown area. Staff was very welcoming and friendly. Room was spacious and clean with a very comfortable bed and good air conditioning, and the rooms felt very secure.
As others have reported, there is some chemical/disinfectant/other smell the minute you enter the buildings and it is also in the rooms. We had to blast the AC to make it tolerable. Otherwise it was fine, a normal BW.
We stayed here two years ago and since then improvements are evident. The rooms are clean and quiet and the morning breakfast is top notch. The recent remodel and updating are very well done. Keep up the good work.
great stay..restaurant needs more help.. Shouldn't have to wait an hour to get food!!! Other than that it is a nice property. Very nice rooms and plenty of parking. Will stay there again..Thank you, Kenny Paine
We were impressed by this Best Western. The staff was very helpful, and the Mexican restaurant on the property served delicious food quickly in a comfortable atmosphere. It made our stopover in Bakersfield enjoyable!
It was a nice room, very caring staff and great restaurant. The staff member came outside and showed us where we could park our bikes for security and was very friendly and caring. The room was nice and everything worked well.
Nice stay; nice room; great room #227A (overlooking the man made river and waterfall at rear of motel) and upstairs near pool, et al. There was a car with only two wheels up on jacks in the parking lot ?!!, and some scruffy types lingering around river and motel so be alert but we had no problems. Don't park in rear near river. Staff was terrific calming our concern.
2nd floor room, no elevator. Ice machine broken. The room was nice, the owners very considerate, the night clerk, did not seem to care. If you are putting guests into a second floor room, you should advise them before, that there is no elevator. Cannot believe there was no elevator in the building. Finally got ice from the Mexican restaurant attached to the hotel, after several requests. The breakfast at the restaurant off the menu was a disappointment. You had to chose from coffee or juice. It was not up to the standard of all other BW we have stayed at.
My husband and I stayed at the BW Hill House for one night as I was attending an event at the Rabobank Center, which is only two blocks away. The hotel staff was pleasant and helpful. The room was a good size, clean, and comfortable and looked as if it had been recently updated. There was a fridge, microwave, and coffeemaker. The bed and bedding was clean and comfortable. As the weather was mild, we ran only the fan and slept with the window open--there was no traffic noise. We had a drink and snack in the on-site Mexican restaurant in the afternoon and returned for a very good dinner that evening. Complimentary breakfast was at the same restaurant--made to order breakfast was served from a menu with many options. I can't remember the last time I stayed in a motel for less than $100 a night. This was under $100 and included parking and breakfast. I will absolutely stay here again, should we need lodging in the downtown Bakersfield area.
We were surprised by the nice BW and the friendly staff. We will return if needing a hotel in Bakersfield again. The room are fresh, clean and comfortable. The Mexican food restaurant was really good!! They were very nice and we will return.
The hotel was nice. It was quiet and safe. The hallway to the restaurant is old and smell as if it needs a refresh. The breakfast was fast but cold. Dinner was good. Staff was friendly, helpful, and courteous.
Outstanding place to stay with great service and location to restaurants, movies and shopping. I would highly recommend this Best Western to stay while visiting Bakersfield, CA. The staff were very helpful and very professional.
this hotel was different than the other BW that I have stayed the other s had just a continental breakfast and no restaurant it was nice to sit down and have someone serve you the menu was mexican / american it was very good you can go there in the evening for dinner it closes at 8:45 for a free breakfast they give you a ticket it was enjoyable staw
Great place. Good people. Nice decor. Love the fact it is directly across from train station. Breakfast was included and from menu rather than buffet. Only drawback was the room was very hot when I entered. Was able to turn on AC but took about 30 min to get comfortable.
Clean, comfortable, and well-located hotel. We slept well. We also enjoyed the pool, in a shape good for swimming, even though it was a bit chilly. The complimentary breakfast was simple, but hot prepared options available and there was table service.
Previous hotels stays were not in Best Western due to locations, etc. Boy, did I miss them. Best Western, including Hill House in Bakersfield just makes every travel so much more pleasant. Rooms are clean, everything works and the staff are always nice and professional. I hate to stay anywhere else for the money!
The stay at bakersfield was good. The location was adequate for the area. The rooms were ok but the bathrooms need maintenance. The staff was good. The breakfast can be improved a little. Thebar closes too early.
Because of the smell, loud train noise (all night), no elevator, can not have pizza delivered to room (you have to go to another building to pick it up I will NEVER stay in this place again and I am a gold member. Avoid this place at all costs. I am sure you can find better value for the money anywhere. Room was clean and a good size but one of the worst stays I have had at a BW.
After finishing our visit to Death Valley, we decided to drive to Bakersfield and chose the Hill House for the night. On approach from the Interstate, we were leery of the area through which we sere driving. No concerns after reaching the Hill House. Staff was very friendly. The room was clean and comfortable. We had a very good meal at the attached Mexican restaurant. We would stay there again if ever in Bakersfield
My mother and I had a horrible experience at the Marriott across the street the night before as she had to be in Bakersfield for a federal jury summons. The Marriott staff treated us like garbage, and threatened us with a $25 cancellation fee, as we wanted to stay here! At the Best Western the following day however, they treated us with respect, they even looked up some cool places to go visit in downtown to make our trip a little better! For $40 cheaper than the Marriott, we actually had a much nicer room too! I have no clue as to why the Marriott is considered "5 stars"..... maybe in other cities it is, but not in Bakersfield! Best Western should be your choice if you're staying in downtown Bako! Great landscaping around the property, at the pool area: beautiful views of the man-made river that runs up to the federal courthouse, and within walking distance to some really cool shops. I ended up really liking this city because of their hospitality, and plan on visiting again in the summer. Also free breakfast, with coffee and orange juice for their guests! Marriott sucks, stay here instead! There's a nice Mexican restaurant attached to the building too!
Recently remodeled. Clean. Friendly helpful staff. Reasonable prices no penalty for cancellations. Also get a voucher for breakfast. Within a mile of downtown. Also a couple of nearby restaurants for lunch. Like all motels do not leave valuables in your vehicle.
I was scared at first when traveling to the hotel because of the area... but once we arrived, I was greatly relieved! I felt safe, the room was very clean and up to date! The staff was friendly and helpful. Just an overall wonderful experience!
I have stayed at this hotel many times for business. The staff is great. They are always friendly and helpful. I always have had a pleasant stay, and have felt well taken care of. I like the personalized attention I have received, they show interest in the well being of their clients. The owners have renovated the rooms, improved their breakfast menu and have added extra safety features to their rooms. I will stay there again.
I stopped there on my way to LA. It was clean but just little old. In the morning around 8:30 I woke up for a lot of loud noises from the hotel's employers: cleaners and repairs. Not far from the highway, 20 miles from the 5.
We stayed her during a conference. The room was very clean and the bed was surprisingly comfortable. The staff goes out of their way to make sure you are happy. The rooms have a coffee maker, frig and free hot breakfast. I will definitely stay here again when traveling to Bakersfield.
I don't ever write reviews but felt so strongly that people needed to hear this. We were warmly greeted by the friendly staff at this Best Western Plus in Bakersfield. The hotel is very clean, and the rooms are newly renovated in a clean, modern and stylish fashion. Every employee there was so welcoming and genuinely concerned that we were having a great stay. The breakfast was delicious and free! The had such a variety, including homemade waffles, bacon, sausage, eggs, oatmeal with all the fixings, fresh juice and coffee. We enjoyed the dining room each morning connecting with the staff and their guests. The hotel is conveniently located and we were able to walk almost everywhere. There is a scenic river walk behind the hotel for walking and relaxing. Nearby there are many superb restaurants to enjoy. Check out the Cafe Crepes, it's a family owned business nearby with amazing, gourmet, homemade food and try Mexicali with delicious Mexican food and visit Los Tacos De Huicho with mouth watering street tacos and a fresh salsa bar that is open very late. We were so pleased with our stay and will be returning anytime we are in Bakersfield. If you are headed to Bakersfield, I highly recommend staying at Best Western Plus Hill House in Bakersfield.
I enjoyed my stay at this best western. I would have to say it is one of the nicer hotels I have stayed at during my travels for work. I will use this hotel again whether for business or pleasure. I will definitely my friends and co-workers..
Located in the heart of downtown, across the street from the Amtrak station, and Rabobank Arena. This property consists of several buildings spread over several acres. The hotel backs up to beautiful Mill Creek Park.
We booked several rooms when we were in town for a family birthday celebration. The rooms were clean and the front desk staff was very friendly and helpful - they went out of their way to find us an extra roll away cot. I would stay here again if I had the need.
Very nice hotel, I would stay there again. The outward appearance of the hotels was nothing compare to the interior lobby are the rooms. I was very please with the staff, the room cleanliness and the over all atmosphere of the stay. Thank you for all you and your staff do in preparing to make the business trip as comfortable as possible.
Great place to stay. Never been here before, so the staff was very helpful giving us directions to certain locations. Nice quiet hotel. The Mexican restaurant attached to the hotel has great food and service. Food is not spicy which is great for us. We ate there two nights.
Staff was very helpful. The room was clean, comfortable and quiet. The Best Western is centrally located, convenient to downtown and to many attractions including auditorium. And they provide a real breakfast too
I have stayed at this location a number of times in the last 4 years and found it accommodating every time. It is located off the main hiways in a very nice "business area" of the city. Rooms are clean, nice decor, and secure. They are currently updating the rooms even more and expect to finish by years end. Staff is very accommodating. Breakfast is of course served free and has proven to be very tasty. I would not hesitate to recommend this location for those traveling through Bakersfield.
This was the first night out, of a week long vacation trip. Although, unfamiliar with the area where the BW was located, was pleasantly surprised with the appearance of the property. Staff at check in was helpful with directions for our choice of somewhere to eat and was extremely impressed the following morning, when partaking of the breakfast provided, that the staff appeared very professional, and worked hard to keep food restocked and tables cleared.
This property is across the street from the Amtrak Train Depot. We did not hear or feel any trains. The staff here are quite friendly, always greeting you as they move about the grounds. This is an old property with nice wide halls. There is no elevator for the 2nd floor. Once inside your room nothing feels old. The bed was comfortable, room was very clean. Towels were not super thin or big and fluffy. We did not hear any of our neighbors. Lots of outlets and USB ports. There is a restaurant next to the hotel for dinner (Mexican) that was good. Breakfast was eggs, bacon, sausage, cereal, waffles, fruit, pastries, bread, coffee, juice. A good value for the money.
Good staff, but rooms needed some work, and parking lot security was very poor. Was there for my daughter's softball tournament, and my truck was broken into. The thieves stole all of our softball equipment along with some other goods. Will not return or recommend.
Hill House is our lodging of choice when staying in Bakersfield. Conveniently close to AMTRAK but not noisy. The in-house restaurant was enjoyable, with friendly service and good food. The Zala family continues to shine in terms of friendly service, helpful assistance and attention to detail. Our several "business" stays were related to ongoing medical procedures & frequent follow-ups requiring multiple overnight or multi-night stays between July and November of 2015. The Zala family members and hotel staff were more than gracious & helpful with extra in-room amenities & special requests. My wife and I could not be happier with how we were housed & treated during both our planned and short-notice visits. You ask about in-room microwaves. Sometimes we did not need/request a microwave. When we did need one, it was made available in our room. To be honest, I more on my mind than any cost that might have been associated with having a microwave. We visited Hill House so frequently over the years that I have been always been able to trust the room charges.
This is a great hotel for us because it's near the lovely River Walk; it's near the antique stores we like to visit, and near the Woolgrowers Basque Restaurant with its yummy food. The room was lovely, quiet, and everything was a positive experience.
Usually give all Best Western hotels a very favorable review, however, this was our second stay here and on both occasions we were given a room that was not clean and fresh smelling. Will not stay there again.
The place looks better than it is, when I reported that there was a roach in the room the desk person rather non-concerned said "she had them in her home and you just can't get rid of them, I'll have someone spray over there for you".
We had a relaxing afternoon at the pool and stayed in for dinner at the hotel restaurant. Best Chili Relleno ever! Great breakfast. Room was very comfortable and quiet. Safe place for a walk after dinner and near event center for future reference.
This place made our stay here so easy! Convenient, clean, great breakfast, everything you need. But the staff...the staff makes it the best! Everyone is so friendly and helpful. They go out of their way to make you feel welcome and comfortable. I was beyond impressed by the warmth and caring of everyone who works here. Hospitality at its best!
There was 6 of us traveling together. We were in Bakersfield one night and this was a great place to stop. The bed was wonderful, great pillows too. We had a delicious breakfast. The pool and the pool area is very nice and clean.
Website failed to notify visitors of construction. Room was saturated with the smell of adhesive. Exterior appealing, well lighted lot felt secure for a high traffic zone. Good staff, good breakfast. Key had to be reprogrammed twice.
The BW Hill House was very nice and we loved the free breakfast. It wasn't a continental type of breakfast either, eggs, sausage, bacon and waffles! There's a Mexican restaurant adjoining the hotel and after a long day not having to drive around this was very convienent. We ate at another Mexican restaurant that was supposed to be really good but the BW restaurant was so much better. Also, the wifi had a good signal strength. I've been to time shares that could barely keep a signal but BW's was good. Don't think you could find a better hotel for the price. Enjoy!
Stayed here for 1 night on a road trip between San Diego and Yosemite. Accommodation was fine dining was ok and Mexican based. Great included breakfast to start the day. Swimming pool was available but with no shelter the heat of the day was too much
The hotel was pleasant and clean. The staff were cordial and helpful. The pool was inviting and had comfortable furnishings. The staff in the restaurant were very friendly and efficient. The location near the convention center and downtown was ideal.
I drove from Riverside to Bakersfield for a business trip. I frequently stay at Best Western Hotels because of quality and value. This trip was miserable. In the middle of summer, the air conditioner was terribly inefficient. It was cooler in the hallway than in the room. Not a pleasant experience.
My family and I were very disappointed to find a green swimming pool that was out of order. It is also a bit noisy as you can hear the train whistle blowing during the night. The breakfast was below average. The location was good in the downtown area.
It even worse than regular Best western. So best western lower its standards? Strange Smell when you walk into hall way. Room furniture and equipment are out of dated, shower curtain is unable to close fully, water got into floor, make some mess. More like motel. Breakfast has limited food.
The room was clean and the staff were super courteous, just like all of our Best Western experiences. The food from Manuel's Mexican restaurant (attached to the hotel) was also super yummy. Unfortunately, the hotel is not in the best area. We were only there overnight and saw several homeless/vagrant-looking folks right outside our room. Also, I do not recommend an end unit room as ours was noisy because of proximity to the building entry door where people stood and talked while trying to get in the door, and then the door slams shut.
Hotel room was clean but the front desk staff on the day of my arrival was not very accommodating! I felt she purposely registered me in the rear of the hotel because of my ethnicity. I 'was' a loyal customer of this franchise but I may consider another hotel chain during my business trips as well as personal travels.
Comfortable hotel with Mexican restaurant attached. If you order a margarita, ask them to put some tequila in it! :-) Hotel room was clean with all the normal amenities. The only issue was the pillows; all thick and hard (no "menu of pillows"). Breakfast was typical and sufficient. I would stay again when passing through Bakersfield.
We enjoyed our stay here; this is one of the nicest hotels in the 'Plus' category in my opinion. It's an older hotel with a modern upscale high end feel; very wide corridors, spacious rooms, nice decor.
I like this place very much and the people who run it and work there are wonderful. I got a little room on the second floor, with a tiny balcony and an interesting view of the creek, the waterwheel, and the path. The room was fine, plenty of space, no problems with the tv and wifi, and everything was clean. I had a mini-fridge. The complex is older and the management employs a lot of people to keep the place looking terrific. The breakfast bar is also well managed, clean, and the young man who sets it up is very polite and professional. The breakfast food could have used some soy or rice milk but I enjoyed the fruit and bagels. The grounds are very nice, we had no trouble with parking, its close to Amtrak, and walking distance to several downtown restaurants. I believe this hotel is like a lovely oasis in Bakersfield and the management and owners should be congratulated for the care and detail they put into the entire grounds. My daughter was sick when we were at the hotel and she found the bed comfortable and the room was quiet. Special thanks to these wonderful people as they found something I left in the room and mailed it to me. So, they are also honest. Oh, and if you read some of the reviews from 2016 you might read the one from the guest who complains that there are "flying bugs at night" that might get in the room if you don't close the door. Ok, that might be true enough but isn't that what bugs do? I don't see how the staff can be blamed that bugs fly at night. Oh well, I love this place and will stay here every time I come through that part of California.
We only stayed one night in this hotel and it was a pleasant experience. Staff a reception was very nice. The beds were good and the rooms were clean. Breakfast was good. Staff was very attentive and pleasant.
This is a destination hotel, we were only staying one night, but it seemed like a nice place to base your day trips from. It is a large property with several buildings. Great breakfast with eggs (hard boiled and scrambled), fruits, breads, coffee, and a lot more. Property could use some maintenance but over all was clean with very helpful and friendly staff.
We stopped here for one overnight on our way to Yosemite. It was fine for one night--our room was clean and comfortable. The staff was friendly and professional. We used the pool to cool off and unwind after a long day of travel. The breakfast was well stocked, and there was plenty of room to sit. We had dinner in the Mexican restaurant that was attached, and it was very good. Overall, it was a fine spot to stop for an overnight, and I'd stay here again if we took the same route to Yosemite.
I try hard to avoid going to Bakersfield for anything, but when I have to I will always stay at this Best Western. The king rooms are outstanding, large, very clean and quite, surprisingly quite, the hotel was completely booked on this date and with all the people coming and going, I never once heard a door slam shut or hallway noise, very well built property.
This is a typical best western , if you are looking for a place to stay on your travel for one night This place will do. They could do some upgrading as the carpet in the room. , needs to be replaced. The breakfast is make you own waffles, cereal, fruit , hard boil eggs , coffee tea , oatmeal etc. the standard best western stuff. Coffee and tea in the lobby available . Again for a stop over place .
This place really needs updating and cleaning. The staff was nice and there is a restaurant attached that I'll review separately. I wouldn't stay there again. there are two parts to the hotel I stayed in the building that was not the main part and it made me question it's security.
This hotel has two separate, two-story buildings separated by a canal with bridge. Neither building has an elevator. One luggage cart, kept in the lobby, of yet another building is all there is! Huge hassle to walk back to get luggage cart, and walk it back to lobby and walk back to room, especially when it's over 100 outside. Hard to believe they don't have a few luggage carts in each building. So inconvenient and physically difficult. This is a warning so you don't get caught off guard like I did. Breakfast was nice, with eggs, bacon and sausage, among many other items, hot cooked oatmeal, not instant oatmeal for example. Some rooms have been recently upgraded, while still some others have yet to receive the renovations.
This is not a bad place to stay if you only just need a place to sleep. The staff seemed kind of friendly, but seem annoyed. The hotel itself appeared somewhat dated and worn out. Although the rooms were clean and had no odor, the hall way had an extremely bad smell to it from the cleaning agents they must use and had a lot of stains. The beds were comfortable. The hotel is conveniently located downtown right across from the Amtrak Station. The free breakfast was fairly lacking compared to the rest of the Best Westerns I have stayed in. They also did not allow you to take it to the room even though our room had a kitchen. they have soap dispensers on the walls and when I went to press the conditioner, the thing fell off the wall and hit my child in the stomach that I was bathing. The business center is not private at all and could not print. If you are looking for a nice place to stay I might, pass this one by. If all you need is a bed to sleep in that is downtown then this might work for you. I most likely wont stay there again.
the first place I was ever told to not park my motorcycle under the entryway. Bikers beware, there are better places who will gladly take our money, especially since Best Western has a Harley deal. We walked out on breakfast, eggs were watery, and the overflow room was not air conditioned, it was only 96 out already. check around for better deals, BTW room was big and clean, slept well, pool was dirty.
The staff is very accommodating and the restaurant lounge is great. This place is a great stop on a travelers vacation. The shrimp were great! The staff was great. We will stay there again when we travel through Bakersfield again.
This is a very nice hotel in a great location in Bakersfield. There is a pedestrian walk adjacent to the hotel that follows the creek and ends at a park. The hotel's location is a block from the train station, with a Veterans Memorial across the way. There are several buildings on the hotel property, two story and very quiet. Ample parking is available next to your assigned building. There is a Mexican restaurant located in the hotel. We have stayed in this hotel before and since it has been remodeled it is even a better value for the money.
Best western Plus is a goto option when travelling with children. Big rooms and good breakfast included make it a great choice. When we were there the promised doughnuts were replaced by pastries - our only disappointment. Loved Bakersfield- would go back to do more shopping in the antique/thrift shops walking distance from the hotel in the charming retro old town. Much preferred Bakersfield to Fresno.
While Bakersfield was not my choice of place to be, I was very happy to stay at the BW there. The breakfast was the standard for BW Plus. The Mexican restaurant had a good happy hour and the food was great. Service there was fine. The room was very clean and the place is pretty new. I got a good night''s sleep and had a good breakfast. I will definitely stay there next time I pass through Bakersfield. The location is very good, and a safe neighborhood.
Was traveling with 2 other couples and we needed a last minute room at 10:00 pm at night. The staff was wonderful- arranged 3 rooms for us- one with pets, one handicapped accessible and one regular. Room was clean and comfortable-clean sheets and towels. Breakfast was wonderful-hot waffles, eggs and oatmeal offered-wide variety of food choices. Quiet location. Would recommend.
Stayed 1 night. Hotel was clean and simple. We used the pool before closing, my youngest son loved it. Room was clean, but without the microwave oven so it was little bit of disappointing, but we ordered pizza in room , so it balance out and it was ok. We loved breakfast! There was everything you can eat: pancakes, eggs, milk, cereal, coffee, yogurt, sausage, oatmeal. It was a great one night stay!
We thought that a Best Western location would be ok, even in Bakersfield, but were pretty disappointed. The room was very hot when we arrived and felt more like a motel. The staff did not look very professional and the breakfast was not worth eating, even though it was free.
My son and I recently spent two nights here to attend a funeral. This is not a bad place to stay if you only just need a place to sleep. The staff seemed friendly enough and were welcoming and efficient. The hotel itself appeared somewhat dated and worn out. Although the rooms were clean and had no odor, the hall way had an extremely bad "nursing home" smell to it from the cleaning agents they must use. The beds were comfortable. The hotel is conveniently located downtown close to the Amtrak Station and convention center. The free breakfast was fairly lacking compared to the rest of the Best Westerns I have stayed in. The only fresh fruit offered were apples that were smaller than tennis balls. The scrambled eggs were watery and had a definite off taste to them. The second morning we opted to eat somewhere else. If you are looking for a nice place to stay, pass this one by. If all you need is a bed to sleep in that is downtown then this might work for you. I most likely will never stay there again.
They call it plus because they put in new televisions and that's it. This hotel is in desperate need of a rebuild. I was disgusted to stay here. I will never stay here again. Hair on ceiling in bathroom, stains on ceiling, mold on walls, broken items in room, used condom under stairway at entry, uncomfortable beds, broken and patched doors in hall, and closed entry to hallway without notice to tenants. Very Very bad quality control of property = horrible management. Across street from Amtrak and lots of questionable characters going through property. Breakfast was average, plenty of parking, central location, good wi-fi. Nothing walking distance from hotel for food except hotel restaurant which was decent. See photos
We were traveling with our small dog and Best Western was the best value for this trip. The rooms are comfortable, include a refrigerator and microwave and the staff were very helpful and courteous. The internet was a challenge but the front desk staff were very helpful and I had good connectivity the entire stay. .
Stayed here 2 nights while visiting family. Location is central for getting around town. Very quiet. Excellent customer service. My king size bed was cozy & comfy. Breakfast was the usual. Landscaping is very nice. I enjoyed my stay & would stay there again.
Very convenient, good option if you're arriving or departing by train. It's an easy walk across the street. Overall, I had a very good stay, with the only significant downside being the neglected fitness center. (It sufficed for the one night I was there, but it wasn't in great condition and would have been more of an issue for me if I had stayed multiple nights.) Other than that, it lived up to my expectations: friendly staff, comfortable room, good reasonable breakfast (scrambled eggs, oatmeal, cereal, etc.). The furnishings were a bit dated and showed some signs of wear, but not to the level that I considered it a significant downside.
The staff are nice people and the hotel is pet friendly The beds were uncomfortable, the pillows were OK but the linens were mediocre. The city is really bad, I went for a walk with my dog around the hotel. There was a pretty church and synagogue and I walked there. I went onto one of the toilets and a homeless person was sleeping there. Bakersfield is so unsafe that people have to sleep in toilets! I make this trip almost every month and from now on I'm passing Bakersfield.
Our family stayed overnight and loved it. The staff was very friendly at both check-in and check-out. Our room was very clean and the beds were very comfortable. The breakfast bar was a full breakfast that included things like eggs, sausage, bacon, waffles, cereal, yogurt, etc. Lots of choices. Definitely a place I would stay again and recommend to others.
Very clean and good service and price was very good, Needed a place to stay for the night and was satisfied when I was able to check in quick and also had a good free breakfast in the morning. People were very friendly and helpful,
With no elevator and noisy in room floor AC blowing at the desk (among other issues), why is this a BW Plus? Also, website does not declare that pets are $15 per night -- after searching the website it says call for more details. Breakfast buffet does start at 6 am. Located on the edge of the central area. Probably would not stay here again.
hotel décor is outdated rugs need to be changed and rooms need paint staff was OK but not exceptional breakfast was satisfactory but place was dirty when I visited it location was OK but no microwaves I rooms inconvenient if you want to heat something have to go to the main office, would recommend this as a last resort
This hotel is well worth the price. The staff is excellent, the room was comfortable, and the breakfast was very good. I stayed overnight for business and could not have asked for more. The location was great, there was plenty of parking, and anything you need is within walking distance. Great Mexican restaurant. I'd stay there again.
This is one of those real nice Best Westerns from the look to the feel. They are also going to remodel this fall which is amazing since everything is very nice, as is. The quality of service was excellent as well.
My husband and I stayed here while traveling from Seattle to Phoenix. It's surrounded by a church, a Jewish temple and the civic center with a police station not too far away. I mention this because the "seedier" sections of town aren't too far away, but we felt safe here. The lobby is beautifully decorated as a sitting area with a fire place and "library." The staff was pleasant and very helpful when we checked in. We had a king room and it was spacious, clean, pleasantly decorated. It is a little older hotel but was still very well kept. The ONLY complaint, as has been mentioned, is that it's a 2-story and no elevator to the second floor. Because of a lung problem, I have a hard time doing stairs and we hadn't requested a first floor room. So if stairs are an issue, be sure to request a first floor. There is a refrigerator in the room but no microwave. The breakfast included some hot dishes like eggs, sausages and bacon as well as all the standard fare. We would stay here again if we were passing through.
Located near downtown, yet easily accessible from major highways, this was a very pleasant stay for us. The attached restaurant (with bar) has a very friendly and helpful staff and we enjoyed outstanding Mexican food for our dinner. Our room was large, clean and modern - we highly recommend this particular Best Western.
Probably the best pillow of our 8 day trip. After a long haul from Williams, AZ, we found the Best Western a welcome refuge. There was a restaurant attached, so we did not have to hunt for one. It was Mexican food, but we did not avoid it after several days of it early in the trip. I found the place comfortable. The only bad thing was my fault. I left something in the frig. I called but housekeeping tossed it out. My bad.
this hotel was wonderful close to everythingand the staff went out of there way to please you the beds were very confortable and the room was very clean this was my second time there and will go back when I am down in the aera
Older motel. Room comfortable and quiet. Breakfast buffet was a full buffet. Quality was good. Overall, excellent value for the price which was low. Have stayed in three hotels/motels recently in Bakersfield on business. This was best for the money.
This hotel looks out of place in a city setting. However, the actual experience inside was nothing short of impressive. Fast internet, newish pillows, comfortable bed, extra linens in closet, great shower and even had 2 refrigerators and a full kitchen.
This hotel complex is quite large, but it doesn't suffer from its size. Our room was very big with a nice bathroom/vanity area. We particularly liked it because it is pet friendly in an area that feels safe when you walk your dogs. The free breakfast buffet was very good, lots of choices. There is a bar/restaurant on the property which serves Mexican food (very delicious!).
Located on a great path along a waterway. Hotel was clean and my dog Cooper loved it! I felt very safe also. Ate at the adjacent restaurant and it was delicious! Breakfast had so many choices it was difficult to choose.
We ended up here because very few places in Bakersfield take pets. It was OK, a bit rough around the edges, but was reasonably clean and fairly quiet. The included breakfast was only OK, but the coffee was good. Unless you are travelling with a pet, you would likely be better off elsewhere.
When we are in the Bakersfield area and need to stop, we always stop at Hill House. Front desk, maintenance and family staff always are gracious, helpful and attentive. We travel with our dog and she is welcome and "feels at home" here. The rooms are clean, and comfortable. We understand that there is going to be some updating in the near future too. The breakfast is hot, well presented, and the room is pleasant to be in. No matter how busy (and this time it was capacity occupancy I'm sure) the staff is always willing to help and do it with a smile and friendly greeting. Oh, and it's a quiet neighborhood.
This hotel is one that we stop at often on our way to visit family in southern California. We like everything about the place, especially the good service we get from the employees. We have stayed at other hotels in Bakersfield, but this is our favorite.
Very clean rooms with comfortable beds and great linen and pillows. Great sleep. Will continue using BW.The staff were very helpful in choosing dinner locations and if you forget to bring anything, they probably can supply it.
The hotel is located about a ten minuted drive from Hwy. 99 and across from a busy rail line and a main road...hence a significant amt. of noise was evident from our room. noted a number of rough looking individuals near the hotel as well as a bus station as well. The hotel did not have a secured parking area despite being told when I booked with Best Western Int. The best aspect of our stay was the adjacent Mexican restaurant which offered good food at reasonable prices.
We stay at the Best Western Plus Hill House every year during the Bakersfield Fiesta square dance weekend. It is conveniently located near the fairgrounds where the dance is held and is always clean and comfortable. The included breakfast is nice and we experienced no problems during our stay, other than a missing light bulb that was replaced.
Older hotel, some updates in rooms, no microwaves, had musty smell in hallways. Two expensive for what you get. Great Mexican restaurant attached. Odd layout of hotel, restaurant, building with rooms, etc. Wouldn't stay there again. Sorry!
We liked the hotel so much, we ended up staying two nights. It is across the street from the Amtrak station so is very handy for us train travelers. The staff was exceptional and the Mexican/seafood restaurant attached to hotel was great. Very clean rooms, comfortable beds and pillows. I always appreciate an in-room refrigerator and also a quiet A/C. The breakfast was good...plenty of choices. We will definitely stay there next time we're in town.
After reading the reviews, and needing a room at the last minute, I figured we couldn't go wrong with a BW PLUS hotel. The staff was friendly, rate was good, but our room was not what I was expecting. It was very musty, not enough towels, there are NO elevators so make sure not to carry all of your luggage if you're on the 2nd level. The breakfast was just ok. Like I said, it's just "OK".
Nice property, close to everything in Bakersfield. Secret, little Mexican restaurant and bar behind the lobby: great drinks, very fresh, homemade food and excellent SERVICE by people who really care about your being there!
Stayed here because the other BW in Bakersfield on I-5 was booked and we needed to book a BW for the spring promo. Otherwise we would have chosen another hotel. Room was adequate, the building is older so the only outlets were the ones on the lamp on the nightstand and small table across from the beds. Not enough for those traveling with their tech. The beds were comfortable, the lighting was awful, they are evidently into CF's because they weren't very bright, both in the bathroom and the nightstand. The bathroom counter was very small with only one outlet available since the other was for the provided hairdryer. The shower nozzle was wonderful and soap/conditioner/gel dispensers were mounted on the tub wall. We stayed on the top floor in the back and it was reasonably quiet. The property is in a sketchy area, and when we asked about walking to a nearby restaurant the desk clerk looked out and commented about the daylight and how we would be probably be ok walking. That comment led me to ask about parking lot security and we were told there was none and don't leave valuables in your car. Not very reassuring when your car is loaded for a long road trip. We ended up calling for take out delivery since we didn't want to lose our parking spot in a very obvious part of the complex which would have been difficult for burglers to get away with breaking in. The desk staff was pleasant, and business like, unlike the older woman my husband spoke to on the phone to inquire about availablity earlier in the day who was brusque and rather rude. Had it not been for the promotion, based on that phone call we would have gone elsewhere. Breakfast was mediocre at best. The waffle batter was sour and should have been thrown out. They ran out of oatmeal and after asking them to refill, they put uncooked oatmeal with some water into the crock pot with the leftovers that were in it and left it to 'cook'. Yuck. Pastries, cereal, fresh bananas. The eggs were the box type and had alot of water in the bottom of the steamer pan. But the sausages were great, best thing they had. We won't be staying here again if we can help it.
Nice place but difficult to get to when all your travels are on the freeways. Big property with lots of rooms. Well stocked bar that even the locals patronize. Arrived during a maintenance carpet cleaning but desk clerk found a room to our liking.
very nice . Friendly staff, nice location, clean and well kept. We would stay at this again. is a very nice place to visit. They had a lot to offer our family and it was warm and sunny. We loved the sights and scenes. The restaurants in Bakersfield were endless, and the wine was perfect. Nice place to visit.
Greeted at front desk by friendly clerk, advised of breakfast hours, Wi-Fi codes on door card envelope, asked if we needed a wake-up call in the morning, or if we needed anything else. Needed door card to enter entrance to interior hallway. Great security feature. Room was recently upgraded with new paint, bedding, and counter tops. Furniture must still be on order ? Carpet could stand a good cleaning. Room smelled fresh. Hotel apparently is pet friendly as they charge extra for dogs each night, and several times you could hear dogs barking. Our room did not have any animal smell to it. Exterior property is well maintained and landscaped. Plenty of onsite parking for cars. Located in older area of town - across the street from the Amtrak station. Noise is not too much of a problem although our room was on the back side of the hotel. We would probably stay here again if in the area. Staff was very friendly !!
Everything was fine, but this is pretty basic budget hotel at a higher cost than the super cheap chains. Maybe because of the location, close to downtown, it was more expensive. But I did not really need or benefit from that. The rooms are basic with some extra amenities like a fridge, coffee maker, and iron. There is a Mexican restaurant and bar right off of the lobby. There are two buildings and the parking is a little tight, or at least was when I was here. The service was friendly and fast. The breakfast area is not large enough for the number of guests and was completely crowded at 7 AM. I grabbed a coffee and skipped the line. Its free, but not worth it. I will probably try someplace else next time I am in town unless there is a big discount here.
When we arrived we were greeted immediately, advised of amenities, i.e. restaurant and breakfast, given information for Wi Fi and totally welcomed. Our room was very nice, comfortable, and clean. Desk personnel on Saturday was very professional and courteous. Check out was a breeze. We felt very welcomed.
nice hotel in a good area and has a great restaurant on property clean rooms good breakfast nice stall a place you can feel secure and conferrable feature pool, workout room, vending machine in hall and some things in office and a lounge area
If you need to stay close to the convention center this would be a good choice. If you don't, then there is no other reason to stay here. It is an older hotel with no elevator and in dire need of remodeling.
My daughter and I stayed here primarily because it is "pet friendly" and we were traveling with our 50-lb. dog. The room was comfortable and reasonably priced, the breakfast satisfactory, and only a modest additional "pet fee" was charged. There is a long grassy median strip in the parking lot that was perfect for walking the dog. But what makes this place outstanding is the service. About 3 hours after we checked out, I received a call from the front desk advising that we (i.e., my daughter) had left a laptop in the room. While the hotel could not itself make arrangements to ship the laptop to us, I arranged with FedEx to pick it up. The hotel not only held the laptop over the long Christmas weekend until FedEx could pick it up, but the staff contacted me before releasing the laptop to FedEx because, since I was having it shipped to my daughter, her name didn't match mine on the hotel reservation. Such honesty, service, and attention to detail by both the housekeeping and front desk staff is very impressive! I'm sure that at many places, the laptop would have "disappeared." They've definitely earned my business when I'm in the area!
This is really a downtown hotel with little in the way of restaurants and things to do nearby, but it is well run and quite clean. We had a problem with the sink and they fixed it immediately. The breakfast was really quite good and since we were rolling through our expectations were not very high, but we were pleasantly surprised and really very satisfied.
Nice bar and restaurant on the property in addition to others within walking distance. Very adequate hot breakfast of eggs, sausage, bacon, waffles and assorted cereals and bread items. The rooms are interior rooms and were very quiet.
My wife and I travel from Victoria to the Desert in southern california. Bakersfield is an ideal stop for our daily distances. The Best Western Hill House in on Truxtun is a great value for us. The hotel is well maintained, the rooms are spacious, internet service is strong, and there is a good choice of hot and cold items in a comfortable breakfast room. I would recommend this stop for all travellers.
I recently had a trip that included an overnight stay in Bakersfield. I was thinking of staying at the Marriot but on my way I saw the Best Western right across the street and decided to just go into the lobby and check it out. I was pleased with the reception and I decided to stay at this hotel. I checked into a clean and well appointed room. I then went to the Restaurant Bar and had dinner. Food was O.K. but the service was good. In the morning I had breakfast (included in rate) and it was very good. I do recommend this hotel if you are in Bakersfield. Pretty good value and clean.
We stayed in Bakersfield on the way back from points north. We searched the Best Western website to find our best options and found 'Best Western PLUS Hill House' and we are glad we did. The rooms were very clean and included everything we needed. The staff were all very courteous. This hotel was extremely quiet even though it seemed fairly full. A hint: Lookup the 'The Hidden Cafe Bar and Restaurant' on O Street! Outstanding food and outstanding service. Just a little simple place but as a cafe or bar, this would be a fantastic choice! We'd recommend staying at 'BW PLUS Hill House'!
Very friendly staff made our stay feel homey and will stay and recommend to others! We stay at BW on majority of our trips bus/pleasure for the great service and exceptional staffing... now as our children are adults and traveling they book their accommodations with BW due to the great experience as children running in the halls, great breakfast and just being a fun, clean, safe, nice place to stay!
GOOO OOOOO OOOO OOd hotel. . . . It saves us money on buying breakfast. . . The staff made sure that we got the room we asked for. . . . . We asked for special room ( down stairs, near the front desk, near the swimming pool, smoke free, not near guests with pets because of allergies )
Stay here on our annual trip down to Cabo and always find the service to be very good. Rooms are a good size for us and our two dogs and there is an exercise room in one of the buildings - nice addition to hotel. Plenty of good restaurants within waling distance and an area for dogs to "do their thing"..
Located on a park with an urban river passing through, and close to places of worship and the Convention Center, we always look forward to our stay at Hill House, and their continental breakfast (with bacon and eggs last time). The staff are uniformly friendly and helpful, the rooms clean and well-lit.
Older facility kept in good condition and very conveniently located right across from the Amtrak station. The hotel restaurant was descent and the hotel offers breakfast as well. I'd recommend this property if you are in town for the night and traveling by train.
We have stayed at this hotel every year this being our 3rd year when we visit town for a yearly party and we will never stay here again. It has cleanliness issues. You could live off the carpet under the bed for a year if there was ever a natural disaster. The door let so much noise and light under it and around it we felt we were sleeping in the hallway. The included breakfast I don't think my dog could stomach it and we left and went out for breakfast. Don't get me started on the front desk staff! Shouldn't English be the first language of anyone who is serving the public or at least a very good understanding of the English language with an understandable accent. We could never get a straight answer on the Wi-Fi and we were told they would email us a receipt and it has been two days and still no receipt. At least that is what we thought he said!
It was the worst Best Western Plus I ever stayed in. Room not up to standard. Dog crap in parking lot which I step in. I give it 2 1/2 stars. Never stay there again. There were other things not very good.
Good value and centrally located. Will allow pets for a fee. The breakfast was excellent and more than just a continental breakfast, Only problem was that the soap dispenser in the shower was empty and I couldn't call the front desk while I was taking A shower. The area behind the motel was beautiful and worth exploring.
Stayed here for the fourth year in a row in early November on our way to Palm Desert. The rooms have always been clean, spacious and comfortable.Staff have treated us well and will do what they can to please the customer! Pricing is within reason and should remain at this level in order to keep attracting the travelling public. Will keep returning if they keep up their quality and price point!
We stayed here for one night en route to Palm Springs. The reception staff are very friendly and welcoming. The room itself (133) is a bit tired in need of renovation as is the rest of the hotel. A bit disappointed because of its designation as a BW plus hotel. Will look for something newer and fresher on our next trip. Also some of the nearby areas are dodgy. We went to the Albertsons on Brundage and the liquor is locked down and we didn't feel comfortable there. Never been in a grocery store where the liquor is locked down. Hmmmm. Didn't try the onsite restaurant but I heard it was very good. Pet friendly hotel which is great for us.
I loved staying at this motel although there was no elevator to the 2nd floor. The restaurant was adequate and the room was very comfortable. The location was great for us as access to the interstate was perfect. A very good experience for a weary traveler.
We've stayed here several times and the staff is ok. The restaurant is very good. The facilities will need a thorough remodeling soon as the rooms are very dated. Quiet area to stay. The location is close to government offices but the property is in a lower value area overall. It's a fair value all things considered.
This was a stop over on our cross country trip. Hotel staff were helpful in providing information on a place to eat. This was just an overnight stay on our travels. Hotel staff were friendly. Facility was clean and based on our research this was a good value for our money. Breakfast was the usual faire but there was a good variety.
Great hotel at a moderate price. Very clean and up to date, great staff, good breakfast. This hotel could teach a lesson to most other BW on how to run a good business. I never consider anyplace else in Bakersfield.
Have been staying here for the last three years. Staff are very friendly and helpful.Rooms are spacious and quiet. Breakfast is usual Best Western and quite good. Plenty of tables and chairs in breakfast room. We use this hotel as one night stop-over and Re very happy with it.It is also non smoking and has a good size outdoor pool. Will use again.
Booked room last minute on trip home from LA, checked in approx. 1AM. Room was almost 90 degrees and took about 45 mins to cool down. AC unit was so loud we had to turn the volume of tv way up just to hear over the AC unit . Found a bug crawling in the bed, so could hardly sleep after that. If it wasn't so late and we weren't so tired, would have requested a refund or room change. Took cool showers in morning, no hot water left.
Great except when asking me information already typed into the reservation record. You can ask for confirmation of what you read but do not start from scratch when I know you already have it. Wasting my time.
This motel seems to be family run without the training of a competent Best Western Motel. The motel is fairly clean, but our room had a good amount of black mold in the shower. We put the rubber mat out in the hallway hoping a cleaning person would see it. They didn't. The management is unsure of what they are doing.
Stayed one night, check in smooth, king size bed, room and bathroom excellent. Air conditioning good with room thermostat. Only niggle maybe some sounds proofing round the door, noise & corridor lights shining through round frame. Would stay here again.
We found this hotel to be clean, well lit (at night), with friendly staff. The breakfast foods were about the same as others - if you are wondering about their breakfast. Had asked for top floor and that's what we got.
This is our second time staying here this year. The staff was very accommodating & the room (had the same one both times, requested a handicapped room) was very clean & it had two queens that were very comfy!! Mini fridge in room is great for food that we travel with & bottles of water. We meet our grand kids here & have pizza delivered at the pool so the kids can swim & have fun! A hot breakfast in the morning & it's delicious! Scrambled eggs, sausage, waffles, toast, bagels, muffins, fruit, yogurt etc. Good coffee & fresh juices! The breakfast room is so nice & clean! This is going to remain our hotel when we visit our grands here!! Reasonably priced too!!
We received good service, room was large, bed comfortable and very clean. Breakfast was included with a variety of items to choose from. Staff was very friendly and efficient. We even got a windshield wash offered.
