Location brilliant for us .Clean ,bit tired looking needs some TLC.Staff were brilliant so friendly and helpful that's what made our stay tbh.Bed comfty . The hotel is used for council accommodation and this should be made clear when booking . Whilst we don't have any problems with anybody it's not really what you expect. A few people In and out smoking near entrance . It's a shame really . No keys for rooms so had to be let in all them by staff .I wonder if this an ongoing thing to stop people taking other people to their rooms? Due to it being used for emergency accommodation??? The staff should be cherished by managers as they do a brilliant job .
Ideal location for Beamish, the coast, the football stadium, Metro Centre etc. Very friendly and informative staff , clean rooms , all amenities provided , lovely bed and bedding etc . Big screen TV, clean bathrom with pleasant toiletries. Situated on a quiet , light industrial estate , near to a range of shops . Ample parking .The breakfast was lovely, cereals, toast, croissants, fruit, yoghurts , hot drinks, juice plus a choice of freshly made , hot breakfast sandwiches Good value for money and nicer than a Premier Inn! We have styaed here before and will return in the future .
The shabby outside of the building & run down overgrown car park masks a very acceptable budget hotel. Don't let first impressions put you off. Exceptionally helpful, charming and efficient staff. Spacious bedrooms, clean & with wonderfully comfortable beds.
Disgusting customer service, I have been battling since June 2025, over a year to get a refund I was promised. So called operations director has ignored my emails and calls since August last year (I have email threads proving this please see attached! ) Upon arrival, there was a blood stain on the carpet near one of the beds , it was quite clearly blood and hadn't been cleaned or carpet cleaned. The double bed needed some serious repairing, but instead of purchasing a new bed, holes in the bed had just been patched over by cut out pieces of different coloured fabric. The room was dirty, there was black marks on the walls and down by the beds was a lot of dust. Even the curtain had holes in, looked like a mouse had been having a snack on the curtain material! It was also extremely hot in the room, no air conditioning and we kept the fan on the whole time but was like a sauna! We left the sign on our door Saturday morning to request the staff to come in and freshen up the room. Quite evidently, the bed wasn't made, and the sheets definitely hadn't been changed. The bathroom wasn't touched, all that was done was the bin emptied! Now when paying for a service, I'm sure you can understand you expect to get what you paid for. I have had phone calls over 6 months ago with Mandy the operations director, who said she would do everything to sort it, funnily enough I'm still waiting for my money. I have contacted booking. Com too who have said they are unable to refund until the hotel confirms what they told me. But as if by magic booking .com have also been ignored and no one from the hotel has answered their calls or emails. Starting to think there isn't anyone higher up, as they certainly don't care about customer service.
Very good value for money .Close to Beamish Museum. Rooms are clean, modern and well equipped . Staff are polite and friendly . Adequate breakfast selection , cereals , toast , juices, yoghurt , hot breakfast sandwiches are included in the room rate .
Some serious AI and photoshop images going on the website, place is very dated and noting better than a truck stop. Breakfast is non-existent (warm yogurt, tiny Asda croissant
Complete satisfaction on my first trip and stay in Sunderland.
Arrived Wednesday afternoon/evening for a 3 night stay. Receptionist was very friendly and welcoming. All members of staff we came across during our stay (Lisa, Helen, Dianne, Gemma & Dorathy) were very friendly & helpful. Our room was clean & tidy, the bathroom was clean, tidy & reasonable size with over bath shower (only issue, due to being on the 2nd floor the water pressure was low and the hot water was only really tepid). Breakfast was as described, choice of cereals, yoghurt, teas, coffees & juices. The hot breakfast bap was more than adequate with sausage, egg & bacon. Whilst the car park is large enough you have to pay for parking (£5 for 24hr).
After checking in we were informed that the key card machine was not working so we had to be let in our room every time we needed in. The hotel was noisy and children were running along corridors till late at night, we were told there was no bar but there was people sitting up drinking till after midnight in the restaurant area and the staff(one person) did not seem to have the authority to do anything about it. We were staying with two children on the ground floor right next to the restaurant which was not ideal. The breakfast was rotten and considering we paid over £120 for one night I was expecting more. Then to top things off when we returned home to receive a parking ticket for parking at a hotel we had paid to stay in and were not informed at any point even after giving our registration plate that we would have to pay for parking. After calling the hotel to ask about this I was told there were signs in the car park which I was not looking for as I was not aware this was even a thing and was not told about it. Overall a terrible experience and would not recommend, it is also in a derelict area with a derelict shut down restaurant beside it. I do not normally write reviews as I think people are being harsh but this was terrible. Our parking charge is £120 so that's double what we paid. Terrible.
Parking at this hotel is an absolute nightmare and makes no sense whatsoever. We spent 40 minutes at reception trying to get some parking app to work. One member of staff said there was no entry time limit and then another said there was a 20 minute limit which we had already exceeded trying to get the useless app to work. The staff then did their best to get any potential parking ticket cancelled. I am left hoping that no ticket will come through. As we were leaving even a tradesman working at the hotel was having to get parking tickets cancelled. In fairness the staff were super helpful in trying to sort the situation out. Why bother with the parking cameras and app? There is nothing else around that non-hotel residents would park here for in any case. If you really need the parking income just get rid of the cameras and app and add a parking charge on to the overall bill; much easier. This one load of hassle would put me off staying here again. This is a shame as the hotel is fine and we had a very pleasant weekend away here with friends. The bonus is the staff who were all really helpful and friendly. They did their best to sort out the parking situation as well as advising on travel by local bus and places to visit. On the Saturday evening we were warned that the hotel would be very busy as there was a Sunderland match on and there might be some noise. As it turned out we didn't really notice any difference and it wasn't a problem at all.
The friendliness and helpfulness of the staff, the value for money for a clean room with bath and shower - good internet. A bit out of town but easy to get to due to regular bus service (No 8) into the centre
As I pulled into the car park it dawned on me that I had stayed there before but it had been a Premier Inn back then. I am not sure why it was no longer part of that chain but it hadn't really changed. It was the same as it used to be. It was clean and tidy and the staff were incredibly friendly and helpful. One word of warning: On their website they say they are in walking distance of the city centre amenities such as the Emporium Theatre (which is why we were there). We used Google maps to plan our walk and when it suggested it would take 50 mins we decided that was a little too much of a stroll to the theatre and back. Other than that this is a very good, value for money, hotel with lovely staff.
The hotel is not in the centre but it us very accessible by public transport and the hotel staff were very helpful in finding us the right bus. The rooms were clean and adequate. What really made our stay memorable was the staff! All the ones we met were so helpful, pleasant and personable.
Initially I was disappointed as the outside of the hotel was tired. There were a lot of weeds & rubbish. However the welcome was great. The room was large & clean. The bed was comfortable & clean. Breakfast for me, was a delicious bacon cob & coffee although lots to choose from. Staff were chatty & friendly & nothing was a problem. Parking was plentiful although you do have to pay. Someone please tidy outside.
We stayed at the Magnum for four nights whilst visiting our son. Our initial impressions weren't great as there was lots of litter outside however we were greeted warmly, our room was large, clean and was just what we needed. Breakfast was simple but filling, cereal, yoghurt, fruit juice and a hot sausage sandwich was a good start to the day. We've been visiting Sunderland for eight years and normally stay in the Hilton, but this is a bargain and excellent value for money. Please find someone to litter pick out the front though, it will make initial impressions so different!
Worst nights sleep I've ever had. I came here with my 2 toddlers and they were kept up all night due to the thumping noise upstairs. We reported this to reception and nothing was done about this matter. We decided to leave the hotel at 6am due to this matter , we were promised our breakfast we had paid for would be refunded and it never has been. All my messages to the property have been ignored. Would NOT recommend this hotel for a family.
Kris and the team were very helpful. They went all out to cater for my gluten intolerance, providing one of the best and biggest continental and cooked breakfast I've ever had. Nothing was too much trouble. The hotel was clean, affordable with lots of amenities nearby. This was our first trip to Sunderland to visit family, it certainly won't be our last. The Magnum felt like a second home. Well done to all the staff.
My son stayed here last week overnight. Paid for parking direct with the hotel on arrival, and has today received 2 parking tickets!! One for leaving hotel to go and get food and other leaving hotel following morning, Not happy at all!!
I stayed at the Magnum Hotel ,Sunderland on the 11th and 12th July. I found the hotel very comfortable and the staff very friendly, I would like to give a special mention to Chris on reception for helping me with instructions on bus timetables to Durham to attend the miners gala, nothing was too much trouble for him. All the staff at hotel were the friendliest people that I have met ,I would highly recommend this hotel if staying in this area........Chris L
Very comfortable beds. Staff were very helpful and informative about the area . Wouldn't hesitate to stay at any hotels in this chain.
This hotel is dated but it is spotlessly clean. The staff are the real stars and are the nicest of any hotel in the area. I travel to Sunderland regularly to see family and the magnum is my hotel of choice. The rooms are comfortable and have everything you need. The recently renovated reception area provides a comfortable place to have breakfast. It can be a bit chaotic when busy but the staff do everything they can to serve you quickly.
