This hotel really stands out as personal and unique compared to chain hotels. Nice "cyberpunk" twist in the deco and nice room. Good breakfast, although in the same hall with other hotels breakfast area so you have to be carefull you are in a right side. All in all a lovely gem for a hotel, would definitely go again!

Unique hotel in city centre. Old-fashioned dark interior. Single room was quite small, but had a desk and lounge chair. No fridge or wardrobe. Bed was comfortable, but illumination weak. Excellent breakfast.

A boutique style hotel with dark interior and artistic hotel rooms. Location is great in the city center. Friendly staff at reception and by the breakfast buffet. Breakfast buffet was good with at least everything I needed. The breakfast area is an indoor market with glass celandine courtyard feeling

I have never stayed in a hotel with such weird decoration. The theme was nautical which can work very well - blues and whites; nice clean lines that Scandinavians are famous for. However, either the designer been allowed to run away with the brief or the brief was flawed in the first place. The room and corridors were done out in a kind of dull brown - the kind you used to get after a decade of smoking when that was a thing. I sent photos to my wife and she said it looked like something out of the 40s. Bear in mind the UK was at war and there was no money. I kept thinking I had dropped something on the carpet and then realised it was an octopus which formed part of the design. I think this would frighten small children and those of a nervous disposition! On the plus side the hotel was well located in the main square and the staff were cheerful - quite an achievement considering what they had to look at all day!

An excellent high-class hotel with a fantastic restaurant. The rooms are very nice, the beds excellent, the decorations fantastic, breakfast very nice, staff very nice. And the closeness to the cheaper hotel U&ME made it easy to travel together with friends and relatives that had a smaller budget and still be able to meet at dinner and breakfast and socialize before dinner.

The first time we stayed here was 2014 and the hotel still going strong. Maybe you like it or maybe not, because it is kind of special with it's dark and, a bit gloomy interior, which must make it kind of difficult to keep spotlessly clean so it can look bit dusty and spots on the bathroom walls, but no big deal really. The breakfast is great but a bit messy if the hotel have plenty of guests. Very friendly and helpful in reception and some in breakfast to (a little, "Good morning" wouldn't hurt ;-) You also have the lovely Kulturbageriet for coffee and cake and DUÅ for gourmet shopping at the indoor plaza and the town just outside.

Filled with charm! Nice place overall and great staff! The locale for breakfast was too small but that is my only complaint. I highly recommend this place and will use it again in the future. Close to almost everything.

Great hotell in the city center, fantastic rooms and interieur , almost perfect service:We stayed over for a night during a journey from Stockholm and Kiruna. Friendly reception when we arrived, very cosy an welcoming entrance. Rooms of good quality and size, very good slleping comfort The restaurant in the evening offered superb food with very good service. Also the breakfast was superb, not so big but excellent choice from local farners. We can only recommend this hotel.

I'm willingly coming back to this hotel. It offers a genuine atmosphere. Have a nice courtyard with a bakery, a shop, and a library. The rooms are not spacious but cosy and you will find a small working pace. Perhaps not ideal for a long stay.

The location of the Hotel is nice, and the view over all is cool. But the room was too small and there were many things that not available such as closet, bathrobe, refrigerator, water kettle, coffee and tea. And the curtain was not fixed probably. Also, the breakfast is limited comparing with FIVE stars hotels I have been in all over the world. But on the other hands, the stuff are so friendly.

Stayed four nights is a single room. The interior of the room, well, they tried to make it look like the interior of an old ship, I think. Dark colours, brass. Even a huge brass "picture frame" around the television. Maybe not my taste but well done an it all worked fine. Good large bed, slept well here, good bathroom, all very well, a bit cramped: Having a lot of stuff -wintersports gear, rather large suitcase etc- it was a bit small, high ceiling and so forth but hardly no floorspace left. No problem, the rest of the hotel provides lots of likeable different spaces to dwell -the library, wouw!- to sit eat and drink or to do nothing in. Breakfast: Good, nothing to whish for, it's alle there, in a very comfotable environment. If I ever return to this part of the world, could just happen, I'll be back in this place also.Stayed four nights is a single room. Visited this nice hotel a couple of days early February and was positively surprised. Can strongly recommend a stay at Stora Hotellet, it's kept old style in a very nice way. Theme is sea-style as Umeå being old important harbour for northern Sweden. Perfect bed for my taste. Friendly staff and nicely presented breakfast.

Very dynamic and smiley receptionnist welcomed us which was a good boost of energy after a long drive. Common space and room are well decorated. The bar is a good place to go to chill a bit; Locals and tourists enjoy it. Location is perfect.

Absolutely loved the theme of the hotel. Gourmet food. Service not what you'd expect from say a chain group. Has a lovely lake just behind and is connected to the town library and mall. I wouldn't stay here if I had the kids with me as it gets a little eerie in the evening! Location seems great.

First, it took about 3 times around the block to find the entrance into the parking garage. A little more information at check-in would be helpful. Then we needed a flashlight to find our room and figure out how to turn the lights on. Even with the lights on, the rooms and hallways were depressingly dark. Decor is very gothic and medieval. Fabrics on the furniture were gold, purple and red crushed velvet. If this is your thing, ok. Breakfast was very confusing. We figured out on the 3rd day that we were eating our “free breakfast “ at the wrong place. When we finally found the right place, it was pretty good. Our only experience in the restaurant for dinner was terrible. Strange menu. Minuscule portions. High prices. One of our party ordered the “grilled scallops”. SHE GOT ONE SCALLOP! Never again. The only reason I even gave this place 2 stars is that the rooms were clean and the bed was comfortable.

Very nice location and the breakfast was great. I stayed for 3 nights, but the cleaner never clean the bathroom! not even changing a dirty towel! The internet was pretty weak making it difficult to work very effectively.

At our arrival the reception and the check in was very friendly and fast. The room was stylish, different but a little bit smallish. Hardly any space between the beds. The room was fully equipped with the things you need. The location is excellent - just in the center of the town. The breakfast had a large selection of local specialties and was very tasty.

We loved our stay at the Stora Hotellet in Umeå, cosy rooms quiet and very tidy. Staff was very friendly and attentive and the breakfast buffet rich and of high quality. They have a nice dark maritime theme which encloses the whole hotel, very warm, somewhat mysterious and cosy.

This is what I consider the hotel of my choice. Right in a centre, car park next to hotel. Hotel is unique mix of history and modern design. Hotel is in connection with this glass roofed cultural space where breakfast is served. Beautiful! Reception lady was cheerful and helpful, thank you!

Stora hotellet is such a beautiful hotel with great service and very good breakfast. We fell in love with the personal design and marine mystique style. Strongly recommend for romantic couples holiday in Umeå!

The hotel is entirely oriented to showing off its peculiar design, which surely is interesting, but causes way more drawbacks than I am willing to accept in an accommodation of this level (and price). The rooms are decorated in dark tones. While this is intriguing, it also makes them almost unbearably dark, especially if you are assigned a room with view on the lobby. But at that point you won't mind that the window provides little light, because you'll have to keep your curtains closed at all times, since there will be people dining meters away from your window. The bathroom is tiny. Again, everything in here is sleek and polished, but there is not a single surface where you can place your toiletries. The only available space is a 20x20 cm shelf, placed just above floor level below the basin. To top it, the lobby once in a while hosts concerts, which will have you listening to loud music until midnight even on weekdays, regardless whether you would like to sleep or just enjoy some silence in your room. Bring earplugs.

The staff are delightful, professional, knowledgeable and humorous all in one package. Do have the breakfast it is delicious and also in the Atrium is a fishmonger: två fiskare (or something similar) as well as an artisan bakery and a delicatessen that all sell scrummy things many of which are locally sourced. In short, make a special detour to stay in this place and explore Umea

This is very nice and stylish hotel. I stayed with my work at this hotel. My room number was 1. Very very nice hotel. Perfect location., and the breakfast is very good. If I go to Umeå again for sure I will stay at this hotel.

Stayed in the hotel for 2 nights on business trip, lovely quirky hotel with striking design features, ranging from wood cladded main stair case, bedroom doors, and general room design. We had a meal one night, the food was great as was the service.

This hotel has definitely has its own style, in a good sense. The interior refers to a ship and rooms are equipped like cabins in it. I felt it being a little dark, but that may be my own preference only. They have a good bar in-house, offer great breakfast and have also a gym (quite basic though). It is located in the city center, close to several restaurants and the river bank.

A nice hotel, but a little to many small mistakes to get better rating. It was in genral very good but here comes those small mistakes. 1) water bottle in your room is included. But there was no water bottle in my rom. 2) the room was clean and fresh, but one trashcan was full of scrap. 3) there was no good table to work at, where my laptop could be placed. 4) the water in my shower didn't go away fast enough, so I had to pause the water several times to not get water on whole floor in the bathroom. If only two things of these above would have happend, then it would be a four star rating. My coleague had only same problem with to small table.

Although small, hotel is nice, clean and comfortable. Location-wise is great: within walking distance to many attractions and restaurants and to jog along Umealven river. Breakfast is superb. Delicious! In summary, great stay!

Right in the middle of Umeå town with the library and cultural center next door the location is great. The staff was very friendly and service minded. There are a couple of restaurants within and next door to the hotel. Good and local selection of items for breakfast, well worth spending an extra half hour eating. Cinema, library and museum in the same building. Funky design throughout the hotel. Rather small room but comfortable.

Great rooms, somewhat smallish, but cozy and nicely decorated. Interesting spaces and solutions with Interesting seafarer history in the walls. The all in all impression is very nice. To sleep comfy and quiet with a very busy and popular bar was new to me. The Breakfast that is included in the price, is ample and full even if I was missing additions like tomatos and beans for the classic plate of eggs and bacon. Wich I didnt mind as the bacon was boring thick slices tasting like dry porkchops. I prefer mine thin. So I tried waffles, they where superb! Crispy and tasty! The buffe had a lot to choose from, there was a lot of choices for most kind of people. Thumbs down for the little hand held bar of soap by the sink and for the lack of robes and slippers! Plus for proper curtains to block out light, Nice shampoo and shower gel. Their apparent glad willingness to help out with anything before arrival cost me 300SEK. Just for bringing up some glasses, plates and spoons on a little table for a cake I had ordered to arrive before us. ´+ Location is good, central to all even the opera by foot. + They have a warm garage they charge 170SEK per night for. Which is recommended because parking around the center of town is next to non existent. + They have family rooms wich are nice and spatious enough.

Very good theme inspired hotel, friendly staff. Great parking in the basement for 165SEK extra per night. Good hotel breakfast. Has a very nice restaurant down stairs and a pub section. The only let down was that it was a bit worn down in the rooms, and a chair in our room had a big stain on it and it doesn't have any spa. Spa I can live without, but stains on chairs - that doesn't give a good impression. I expect rooms of this price to be top notch and spotless clean, and it simply wasn't.

This was a perfect hotel for Halloween. It has so quirky decor. It is an old Seaman's Mission House from 1895. It was reopened after renovations in 2014 retaining the old atmosphere. The hotel is attached to the new Väven cultural center. The shopping mall MVG is across the street. We stayed in the Suite which is a huge room. The living room was once the hotel's banquet hall, with views across Rådhusparken, the Town Hall, and Umeälven River. The main bathroom with a bathtub and a sauna is next to the living room. The bedroom is a standard room connected to the living room. It has a smaller bathroom with a shower. In addition to the two bathrooms, there is also a small toilet. The breakfast was quite average for the overall standard of this hotel. It was crowded and the food selection was small. The staff was very friendly.

Beautiful hotel that makes you think of both Harry Potter and old ships. There are a lot of thought behind every little detail here. Staff is excellent and supernice - I asked for a quiet room and they sure made that happen. Breakfast was amazing.

Nicely styled upper-mid hotel in central Umeå, right by the river and town square. Hotel has a nice and lively bar&bistro (Gotthard's). All staff give very friendly service. (There's only a small gym.)

This historic hotel is in the center of Umea, which is an extremely pleasant college town of 130,000 people. The hotel is decorated in a nautical theme, with dark wood and nautical artifacts throughout the hotel. Even though we upgraded our room on arrival and paid for parking in the hotel's secure garage, we only paid $177 per night, which I thought was very reasonable by Swedish standards given the quality of the hotel. Great water pressure, Ironing board, real wine glasses, and a hair dryer. Good breakfast.

The decor is different to anything I have seen before and the colour scheme is rather dark, but it is all very nicely done. Room was clean, bed comfortable, bathroom excellent, breakfast very good. The only drawback is that it doesn't offer very good value for money, as at this particular price point I would have expected more luxury. Umea does seem like a very expensive town though, as we found out when we attempted to find somewhere to eat and discovered that a main course in a restaurant started at approx 250 SEK and something like a steak would set you back approx 350 SEK.

This is hotel is located right in the city centre of Umeå. We had a junior suite, good bed and large bathroom. The rooms are good isolated, no noise from outside or from the corridor. The breakfast is the best in Sweden I have ever had in a hotel, a huge variety of local and organic products. The freshly baked bread is amazingly delicious. Staff at the reception is really friendly.

Stayed here for the second time and it's just as unique as we remembered. Dark and mysterious interior, good service and good beds. Practical location and I recommend parking in their garage under the hotel. All inn all a good experience and I would have rated this as «excellent» if the breakfast had been good, it's not bad, it's just basic. In a place like this I expect more.

A really individual hotel, where a great deal of effort has been taken in fitting out this old building. The public spaces are quiet and welcoming, and cosy is the lasting impression. The room was well fitted and the bed deserves praise for its quality. The shower room was spacious and with it's underfloor heating, very luxurious. I'll accept the style will not be to everyone's taste, but it is a welcome change from the more corporate offerings. I, for one, will be returning because of this ambience. Worth mentioning, the breakfasts are taken in the covered courtyard, and are really inviting, especially the cook-yourself waffles!!

Stayed here in a "vidskepelse" room. The interior is modern and classy. The bed is really comfortable. Staff is friendly and helpful. The room is quite small but that doesn't really matter for a short business trip. Excellent breakfast included in the price. The only downside was the gym that was tiny unfortunately.

Can't really make up my mind on this hotel. When you enter the hotel you get the feeling of “wow is it still Halloween”. Some of the interior is quit cool, love the doors. Rooms are nice with comfortable beds, but missing a chair and a desk. I guess the idea is great, but it just much of everything. I was working from my room before lunch before checking out and the cleaning staff opened my door 4 times during this time. The staff at breakfast avoid eye contact and didn't even respond to a hello. So it's definitely minus on staff and feeling welcome. And still can't make up my mind if the interior is cool or not, but if you have to think of maybe it's not.

This hotel is in the center of Umea, and is an intriguing hotel. The decor is dark and nautical, with impressive attention to detail. The doors are fronted with 3D images of the northern lights, old ships and other sea-related themes which add to the atmosphere that the designers have endeavored to create. The staff are all very welcoming, and nothing is too much trouble. The food is excellent from the bar and restaurant, and there is a solid selection of wines too. It's intriguing though for a few reasons. First of all, the room I had was a Queen, but it had two single beds pushed together. This wasn't a massive deal for me but as a bigger guy, it was slightly uncomfortable and this is where they lose a star for sleep quality and the rooms themselves. Secondly, the bathroom, whilst impressively put together, had a very creaky bathtub and smelled a little too much of damp. It's almost like the tub is too far from the walk, and as a result, water is falling between and it's soaking into the floor beneath. Thirdly, the morning breakfast is not very well controlled. What I mean by controlled is that for the first three days I ate breakfast there, no one asked me for a room number or anything. There seemed to be little in the way of organization: food is put out, you find a table, go grab food, sit down and leave. On the Sunday, I was finally asked what room I was in, but it was the one and only time. The food was really good, though the coffee could be better. Another impressive aspect of this hotel, and I'm not sure if it's the hotel or the Swedish themselves, is that it's very quiet. There was a heavy metal festival happening in Umea, with many metalheads staying at the hotel but not once was I disturbed from my sleep and I know that many people were rolling home at about 3am. I was also lucky enough to have a set meal at the hotel with business colleagues, and the food was great. The wine package is highly recommended too with excellent Swedish Ice Wines and even Austrian wines! The overall feel of the hotel, whilst nautical, is very cozy and homely. Everything is comfortable, and you're made to feel as though you really are “home” when you get back from a cold and brisk walk in -15F weather! If I'm ever fortunate enough to find myself in Umea again, this is where I will try to stay as it's a central location, has everything that you'd need and does all it can to make your stay first rate.

Another stay at this great hotel. Great design, absolutely great kitchen and friendly staff. Garage directly in the basement (extra charge). Some rooms are quite small but absolutely special and nice designed. Everything clean and „useful“. Directly connected to the hotel is a kind „of mall“ with special food shops and a big book store. Not sure what else is inside this mall beside. The hotel is 5‘ - 7‘ away from the airport and next to the river. If you‘d like to eat at the restaurant (which is awesome) book a table upfront. It is our derived hotel and will remain as this for sure!!!!

The interior and design of this hotel is amazing, dark and cozy. I would give 5 stars but when we visitied the loudness from the bar ruined the first night. Loud music and bass til 1 am was not appreciated when we were tired and just wanted to sleep. Otherwise breakfast was really nice and the hotel has a good location.

This is a fabulous hotel with a extra ordinary interior, feeling like you part of the Pirates of the Caribbean. Not just the hotel is beautiful decorated and designed, there is also great bars and restaurants connected with the hotel. I can definitely recommend this place.

Stora Hotellet - great night stay in Umea. Quirky hotel with interesting decor and a sailing / cabin themes in the rooms. We had the Adventure room, was quite compact however very well furnished. Staff were friendly at checkin and helpful with parking directions. The breakfast was nice, a lot of local ingredients

Great location and very interesting hotel. Always stay here. Very close to shopping and the library and restaurant are right in the same building. Very helpful staff and comfortable rooms. Some fun architecture.

This hotel has to be one of the coolest finds in northern Sweden. I found it by chance when taking an impulse trip up the coast with a friend. The decor is completely based on a nautical theme; the room interiors feature deep colours, brass fixtures and incredible tromp l'oeil walls featuring Neptune, sailing ships and octopi. Somehow, all of this manages to not be at all kitsch or gimmicky but super stylish and awesome in its detail. I stayed three nights - the first in a larger deluxe room and the last two in a smaller one. Both were beautifully decorated, warm, quiet and super comfortable. The smaller room would probably have been a bit snug for two for stays over one night, but just fine for me. The only issue I had was that I found the rooms to be rather dark. Some brighter lighting options would have been most welcome. Internet is lighting fast in the rooms and public areas. Apparently Umeå boasts the fastest internet in Europe... Who knew..?! The first room had an interesting view of the cinema (housed in a handsome period building) and the river. The smaller room was a bit closer to an office building but I could still see the water and didn't feel crowded. The hotel is close to everything in the town and placed right by the river. I found the staff here to be polite and very helpful in my dealings with them. In particularly Elin ( I hope that's spelled correctly) was so lovely to deal with and helped me navigate some difficult bookings professionally, kindly and with a great sense of humour. Wonderful. I found the bar area to be cool and comfortable, and the staff friendly. Dinner in the restaurant was very good, with a delicious selection of mains based on locations around the world. Breakfast was ample with a decent selection. For an unplanned stay I was pleasantly surprised and really enjoyed this cool hotel. I'd recommend it highly when staying in groovy little Umeå.
