"Not modern , staff friendly & helpful"

Checked in after a long day of travel from NY the room we were given was not even close to the pictures on the hotel website ours was old and dingy the walls are paper thin , the 70s bathroom was tiny every other balcony has tile ours had dirty carpet , the outdoor light performed a disco effect of blinking all night that kept our children awake , the refrigerator made a horrible noise every few minutes and the bed room bed side lamp also blinked if you walked on the opposite side of room - we kept it off after that thinking it was an electric short . We had to stay but if I could have found availablilty else where we would have left immediately. Pool was kept immaculate everyday the laundry area was always very clean grounds kept very nice and neat

Welcomed to hotel with your choice of coffee or lemonade and cookies. Charming, clean, and quaint with a Latin vibe. Our room has a nice basket with fruit and snacks and bottled waters. Rooms were spread out kind of far from office, pool, and restaurant.

Dear HugsFromSweetPea, Thank you for taking the time to provide your comments. We appreciate the kind words and hope that you will allow us the opportunity to welcome you back to the Best Western Plus Encina Inn & Suites. Sincerely, Anthony I.

We love this establishment - do not mess up your reservations though! The attached restaurant is very awesome you should eat and buy cookies daily. Very Hawaiian styled. This place would not please the super picky but you would be happy if you like a relaxed family place.

AnthonyI580, General Manager at Best Western Plus Encina Lodge & Suites, responded to this review
Dear 306madeleinem, Yes, we are pleased to promote a relaxed atmosphere here at the Encina Inn & Suites. We are grateful to have The Live Oak Cafe offering breakfast, lunch and dinner highlighting the many extraordinary products that Santa Barbara has to offer including: local produce, seafood, local wine, and craft beer served in an innovative and comfortable atmosphere. The owner, Molly, is a wonderful baker and enjoys offering unique items baked daily. We hope you return for another "relaxing" visit. See you soon, AnthonyI.

"Lovely Friendly Hotel"

18/09/2018

As a family of four adults and two children we had adjoining rooms. Stayed for two nights and would have stayed longer if we had time. The reception staff are friendly and helpful. The rooms were clean and comfortable and what was nice that they even cleaned the TV control and put it in a litttle bag (nice touch as they are very unhygienic). The pool was lovely. Nice coffee selection in reception. We had breakfast in the restaurant and there was a very good menu. Parking easy. Nice little birds in the aviary. Would recommend this lovely hotel

"Lovely One Night Stay"

18/09/2018

My partner and I staying here for one night to break up a drive from LA to San Fran. Check in was flawless, and the General Manager who checked us in was so lovely. Seemed honest and genuine, and gave us so much info about Santa B, where to eat and gave us a helpful map. Our room was really spacious and clean. We used the pool which was lovely, and nice to have a pool where you can't touch the floor for a change! They ordered a taxi for us into the town, and we walked back which didn't actually take too long. Was gutted to leave as the hotel and area were so lovely, could have had a few days here. Would be happy to stay here again if we are ever in the area.

AnthonyI580, General Manager at Best Western Plus Encina Lodge & Suites, responded to this review
Dear Rachel M, Thank you for your kind review. I am so pleased that you enjoyed your stay and hope that you have the opportunity to return to our magical city sooner than later to explore the many area attractions and beautiful coastline. Cheers, Anthony I.

"Comfortable, clean room"

31/08/2018

We stayed on the second floor overlooking the pool. Our room was a good size for 3 of us and the beds were comfortable. The room was quiet and air-conditioned. Having a safe and small fridge was very useful. Plenty of free parking. It was a bit of a walk to get to the main city area with restaurants, etc but it was a nice neighbourhood to walk through.

"They charge you $22.40 if you want to check in before 3pm."

19/08/2018

I was very disappointed to learn that they charge you to check in early. I have never heard of a hotel doing this and I think it is terrible customer service. If you have rooms that are sitting ready it should be a service to your customers....especially when they are paying $200 + a night. I will not stay here again.

Anthony I, Manager at Best Western Plus Encina Lodge & Suites, responded to this review
Dear Jessica G., Thank you taking the time to provide your comments. To clarify, our guaranteed check in time is 3:00PM. We do charge an early check in fee for requests that come in 3+ hours prior to check in as these requests affect our scheduled housekeeping, particularly during the busy summer season. I appreciate your feedback as we review our current early check in policy. Thank you, Anthony I.

"Could have been better"

19/08/2018

We arrived after 5.00pm but had to wait an hour for our room to be ready. The staff were very nice and apologetic, and offered us towels so we could go and swim. But after a long day travelling we just wanted to flop in our suite. The suite itself was ok. It was clean and comfortable although the ac unit was incredibly noisy. We had two bedrooms and a living/dining/kitchen area which was great. We stayed two nights and whilst it was good value for money I don't think I'd stay again.

"Nice place to stay! "

11/08/2018

Nice place to stay. We stayed at the hotel for 2 nights and it was just perfect. Friendly staff, clean and spacious rooms, it was quiet, and there is a parking. The room was well equipped including free water bottles and fruits. The bar/restaurant is great tasty food for breakfast and good service. Use uber to get to the beach it will take you less than 10 minuets.

Anthony I, General Manager at Best Western Plus Encina Lodge & Suites, responded to this review
MaayanLior, I'm pleased to read that you enjoyed the accommodations, amenities and restaurant. Our location offers easy access to not only the beach but to most of the areas popular attractions. we look forward to having you return as our guest next time you visit Santa Barbara. See you soon, Anthony I.

"Quaint, Comfortable, Friendly"

5
31/07/2018

We have stayed here for at least 15 years and spend about 8 weekends per year here. It is clean, comfortable, quiet at night, and friendly staff. Multiple rooms to choose from such as 2 story condos, two and three-bedroom plans, single rooms, kitchens, etc. I love the multi-room condos or two tory option because you have a kitchen (fully stocked.) There is a restaurant with bar service. Is it 5-star? No, but it has decent breakfast and lunches for pool days. I like it. The pool is nice and can get crowded with the kids on busy summer days, but it's still pretty relaxing and chill. The hot tub is separate and private and seats about 6 or 8 comfortably. It's away from the pool so you can really relax. On-site washer and dryers. Great location. Easy access to freeway and straight down State for some touristy action.

Clean hotel but needs updating throughout. Good swimming pool area. In the apartment style family rooms there was an oven and full kitchen however crockery and utensils weren't provided which is confusing. Taps were incorrectly labelled in one of the bathrooms we stayed in, which resulted in cold showers

Anthony I, General Manager at Best Western Plus Encina Lodge & Suites, responded to this review
Sophie I, thank you for taking the time to provide your comments. I am concerned by reading your comment about the tap labeling in the bathroom. We would encourage our guests to report any maintenance issues to allow our team to act swiftly to ensure the safety of our guests. We never want to put our guests in a situation that they may be hurt or surprised by hot or cold water. I am glad to read you enjoyed the pool, which is a lovely area to relax and enjoy. We hope to choose to return as our guest. Kind regards, Anthony I.

"Very friendly staff and beautiful hotel in Spanish stile"

27/07/2018

The staff is very friendly and gave us a lot of information about Santa Barbara. There are a lot of parking slots available and you can get the best coffee of the city in the reception of the hotel. The rooms are very clean and the WiFi is very fast. The pool and the whirlpool are both very clean and it is very relaxing to be inside of them.

"Cute motel with great staff, awesome restaurant"

5
27/07/2018

Nice quiet street, clean room with comfy beds. Staff was great and the restaurant was great for breakfast. Wish the pool was a bit larger and had more chairs. My biggest complaint is that the rooms do not have a fan and they really need one - Santa Barbara doesn't need AC much in the evenings, a fan would do but every night we had to turn it on since the room had no cross breeze.

"Amazing find we keep coming back to"

24/07/2018

Our second stop on the annual family trip up the coast this week we stayed at this amazing little jewel in a great location. Our room was a cozy apartment style room. Full size living area with kitchen and breakfast nook, 2 full size bedrooms and a full bathroom. The property is beautifully landscaped, and impeccably maintained. The staff is so friendly and goes above and beyond for their guests. There is a gift shop, a restaurant and a salon on the property. There are also a gym, jacuzzi, pool area and sun decks too. Definitely coming back here!

Anthony I, General Manager at Best Western Plus Encina Lodge & Suites, responded to this review
Dear LABznessTravlr, Thank you for choosing to return to the Best Western Plus Encina Inn & Suites. "Good location, pleasant grounds "

21/07/2018

I stayed here for one night with my teen daughter in mid-July. I had a meeting and we had a college tour at UCSB scheduled for later. The hotel was well located for both things, about a 2 minute drive from both the 101 and the main drag of State Street. We had a room with a king bed and balcony overlooking the pool. The room was good-sized and the balcony was pleasant in the evening. We used the pool and jacuzzi in the afternoon after arriving, and both were well maintained and a good temperature. The room itself wasn't fancy, but it was fine. It was humid out that night, so we needed to use the a/c, which was kind of noisy and not that effective. I would guess this isn't an issue most of the year, since Santa Barbara is pretty temperate. When I got home, I realized that I had forgotten a pillow I'd brought with me. I called the hotel, and they not only mailed it, but I received it the next day! I would recommend this hotel.

"Excellent stay"

5
17/07/2018

Booked this at the last minute and we were very pleasantly surprised with our choice. Clean rooms, nice pool area, friendly staff and ample parking. It's about a 30 minute walk to the main drag of State Street or an $8 Uber. There's a few restaurants around the block which serve good breakfasts too.

"We didn't want to leave!"

14/07/2018

We stayed here for 2 nights in July as part of our honeymoon. This hotel is a little way out of the town centre but provides good-value accommodation and the walk into town is very beautiful so never a problem for us. Our room was upgraded on our arrival and we had a lovely, large room with garden area that we could walk to the pool from. Complimentary daily bottles of water was also very handy. Bathrooms are a bit dated decor wise but clean and had everything you need! The pool area was very nice and popular with plenty of places to relax in. Plenty of on-site free parking also. A HUGE thank-you to Ramon at the front desk, who upgraded our room and gave us a bottle of wine for our honeymoon. He also provided us with all the information we needed about Santa Barbara and what to see and restaurants to go to. This was very helpful and allowed us to make the most of our short time here. He was amazing! Santa Barbara was one of the most beautiful places we have been to and definitely want to come back soon and will stay in this hotel again 100%!

Anthony I, General Manager at Best Western Plus Encina Lodge & Suites, responded to this review
Bee_2604, thank you for taking the time to let us about your recent stay and for your kind words about the hotel. We are so pleased you found the Encina to be a good fit for you and we look forward to having you return as our our guests. Ramon is a hospitality gem and we are so lucky to have him as part of our team. I will be sure to pass along your compliments. See you soon. Cheers, Anthony I.

"Home away from Home :)"

Ramon is THE BEST reason to come to this amazing hotel. His customer service along with Victor allowed our family to feel like we were "home away from home." The hotel is a gem (hidden gem) that is close to everything awesome in that area. Don't miss out on meeting the best staff in SB. YAY Ramon!! :)

Hotel has nice curb appeal, flowers and shrubs throughout grounds which looked lovely. Reception staff very helpful and friendly. Plenty of off road parking and on site restaurant for drinks and snacks. Hotel room comfortable, bed very comfy, plenty of storage, free safe, fridge and good shower. Local area very picturesque and easy to walk into town centre from hotel.

22/05/2018

Good location. Well located. Nice room. We had a corner room in the back. Comfortable bed. Free parking. Sold out both nights we stayed. The staff were wonderful. Room was clean. Our room had a little kitchen we didn't use. Large bathroom. No problems. Breakfast was not included. But we found interesting places to eat both mornings.

"Good for a few days"

21/05/2018

This hotel is well located in Santa Barbara. The size and comfort of the room are ok, they offer a jacuzzi but the shower could be a little better. And the pillows could be much better... but I have problems with pillow in hotels. As they don't offer breakfast.. go to The Daily Grind... walking distance from the hotel.

"Loved My Stay!"

Great hotel and great restaurant! The breakfast menu has something for everyone. The Bacon Waffles were fabulous! The staff was very friendly and there is free shuttle service to and from the airport which is very convenient!

"Really a motel"

Nothing special. good location. rooms are dated but spacious. can walk to shops and restaurants. easy access to highway. free parking. over priced on holidays. the restaurant is okay. small pool. service is average.

"Comfortable stay"

4
11/05/2018

We stayed for 2 nights and it was a nice stay. The hotel is split more like a motel/apartments. The room was a good size, comfortable bed and large bathroom/dressing area. We had a small balcony (not much of a view but nice to have an outdoor space). The air con unit is a bit old and noisy but does work well, you just wouldn't keep it on overnight. We didn't have much interaction with the staff since we didn't pass through reception apart from checking in and out but they were polite and efficient. Location is good, close to downtown and in what seems to be a nice, quiet neighbourhood. Overall, we had a good stay here, a good base to explore Santa Barbara.

Anthony I, General Manager at Best Western Plus Encina Lodge & Suites, responded to this review
Dear Rravi23, We know there are many lodging choices in Santa Barbara and we thank you for choosing to stay with us at the Best Western Plus Encina Inn & Suites and for taking the time to share your experience. I'm pleased to read that your overall stay was good and that you appreciated our location close to so many local area attractions. I've noted your comment regarding the noise from the air conditioner and have shared this with our maintenance team. We hope you will choose to return as our guest in the future. Best, Anthony I.

"Pleasant family refuge"

4
11/05/2018

We stayed in the 2-bedroom suite, which was very spacious and more like an apartment than a hotel room. The grounds are lovely although parking was a bit tight for our mini-van and a late check in. The suite had 2 beds, a kitchen and family room. It was very clean but the upholstered furniture and tile was dated. They had lots of nice perks in the room like apples, water bottles, hard candy. The rate was a very good value for Santa Barbara, where even Motel 6 is over $200 a night.

"Will stay at this hotel from now on."

07/05/2018

I've been making this 4 1/2 hr drive, one way, to Santa Barbara Sansum Clinic since 2005. I've stayed in other Hotels until last month when I found out about this Best Western Encinia hotel. Two of the most wonderful, amazing & caring people just checked me in. I can not even begin to say how much I appreciate you Danica & Ramon. Thank you from the bottom of my heart for your sweet conversation and gift. Almost forgot to mention the comfort and cleanliness of our room. Your employees do an amazing job!

Anthony I, General Manager at Best Western Plus Encina Lodge & Suites, responded to this review
Dear Jenny S, It is our pleasure and commitment to ensure that our guests are comfortable from the moment they arrive. Thank you for your acknowledgement of Ramon and Danica, both true hospitality super stars. We are so glad you found us and we look forward to welcoming you back. See you soon, Anthony I.

"Great Stay"

wonderful place to stay while enjoying the Santa Barbara area. Well run, friendly and helpful staff, immaculate rooms and facilities, low-key envirinment. Has everything you need. Restaurant is excellent. Easy access to all activities in the area.

"I would of loved to stay longer"

5
29/04/2018

Great staff from moment of check in Thank you Roe for directions to nearby Trader Joe's.. Very comfy room with complimentary treats fresh fruit water and robes. Nice bathroom with a handy magnifying mirror, I was there only one night for business and wished I could of stayed longer. I would love to go back with some friends and use the pool area. Very nice to have a restaurant on the property.

"Loudest stay ever. Interior was nice."

3
22/04/2018

You know the door that connects to the room next to you? There was a gap between the floor and the door bottom almost 2 inches! I could get down and see peoples feet. I forgot the room number, but it was on the second floor and near the corner of the building, and for two weeks they stuck every family with kids next to me. MOST annoying was the lights were on timers, so every ten minutes I'd have to jump up, run to the door and wave at the sensor. The place was clean and the parking was extremely cramped.

"Super fast check in & check out"

5
19/04/2018

Nice room & comfy bed Super fast & easy check in & check out Available coffee, oranges & apples at the reception Plenty of parking There's also a restro-bistro-cafe There's swimming pool also Staff are nice & friendly

"Very nice & charming find!"

17/04/2018

We stayed at the BW Encina Inn 4/14-4/16. We requested upstairs & a King room. Our request was accommodated. There's many extra touches at this property! Fruit & candy even in the room! Older property but well maintained. Coffee & tea also in the Reception area & a gift shop. A great cafe on property that does full breakfast, lunch & dinner, plus happy hour! A few blocks to stroll to the beach. Staff was very engaging!

"Clean room and convenient location"

4
07/04/2018

It located at quite neighborhood but also quote convenient, 1+ mile away to downtown and 10-15 minutes drive to pretty much most attractions, I ran to the beach every morning and quite enjoyable experience. The room is clean and comfortable, only complaint is there are some odor(from the carpet?) in the first ~15 minutes when we walk into the room.

Anthony I, General Manager at Best Western Plus Encina Lodge & Suites, responded to this review
Good day Fan Y, I am pleased to read that you appreciate our convenient location, It is wonderful to hear that you ran to the beach everyday, what a beautiful way to spend during during the day. Regarding the odor from the carpet, I do hope that you reached out to our staff to allow them to correct any issues. I have not been made aware of any specific odors and we always want our guests to enjoy a comfortable accommodations while they are staying with us.I hope you have the opportunity to return soon. Thank you, Anthony.

"Great stay next to hospital"

5
04/04/2018

Our 7 month old son had surgery and we wanted to stay close to the hospital just in case any issues arose. We decided to stay here since it was 100 yards away from the hospital and it was great! Very clean! Hotel staff was very accommodating and helpful! We will be staying here anytime we go back down to Santa Barbara.

"Comfortable stop for travelers"

5
22/03/2018

While this hotel is not fancy or on the water, the rooms are comfortable, clean and quiet. Santa Barbara offers cheap parking around town. So parking was free at this hotel, and it was easy and cheap around town. We were greeted by Ramon who was so kind, welcoming and informative. He gave us milk & cookies at 5:30 after our check in. The lobby always had fresh coffee. The on-site Restaurant offered a unique cuisine with an Asian flair, and great desserts. Ramon gave us Restaurant recommendations for Brophys on the harbor which was perfect. Everyone we encountered at this hotel was friendly. This hotel is a cluster of 2 story buildings and each room has its own entry from outside.

"Great Value for Santa Barbara"

5
14/03/2018

I have stayed at this property 3 times recently. I am typically a hotel snob and prefer the higher end properties. I feel that for the area and accommodations this is a good value. Clean rooms, nicely appointed and friendly staff.

"Love this place!"

5
14/03/2018

Have stayed here several times, as my daughter attends UCSB. Each time we have stayed we've been pleased with the cleanliness of rooms, location and the attentive staff. We will definitely be staying here again and I would recommend this place to friends and family

"Close to hospital"

3
12/03/2018

Nice and convenient place to stay if u have cottage hospital business. Very close to hospital and affliated rehabilitation facility. I would stay here again for proximity to hospital and quite poolside respite

"Great little place with plenty of extras"

5
12/03/2018

I have to say of all the places we've stayed, this room had by far the cleanest-smelling bed sheets we've ever experienced. What bliss!! Great location in down-town, walking distance from coffee shops and restaurants.

"Great value!"

5
11/03/2018

Very comfortable, reasonably priced hotel with loads of amenities (pool, spa, coffee and tea in a warm and cozy lobby on a rainy day, friendly and efficient service staff, good on-sight restaurant), in a beautiful neighborhood of Santa Barbara. We plan to stay here next time we're in Santa Barbara.

"Excellent for Business Travellers or for Private Travellers"

5
09/03/2018

Excellent hotel from all points of view. Special thanks to Ramon at the check-in desk for his outstanding service and explanations on touristic sites in Santa Barbara! Thanks to the other two employees at the reception and to the other service employees for a good job!

"The finest Best Western I've ever stayed in"

5
03/03/2018

You would not even know it's a Best Western (not that there's anything wrong with that). The restaurant is fresh and delicious, and the staff is so friendly - especially the gentleman who checked me in back in January. Ramone? His family used to live in LA, but his mom didn't want to raise her children there so she brought the family to Santa Barbara. I hope I have his name right because, whereas everyone was friendly and kind, he went the extra step. He knew that I was visiting for medical reasons, and he wanted to make the experience as stress free as possible for me. Thank you very much

"Great location for hospital, nice hotel/motel"

4
03/03/2018

The people here are great. The prices are California, so a bit more than I'd expected, but they did honor a government rate, so that made it more affordable. The proximity to the hospital is fantastic. It's just a block away and so if you're having to be at the Cottages hospital, it's perfect. Staff are friendly and super helpful. we were there three nights and they were so flexible and helpful with us in getting rooms for me and my sisters while my brother was in hospital. The hotel itself is more like a motel with all outside entrances to the rooms, cars park right outside the doors to the rooms (not my favorite feeling for a hotel). The rooms, though are really very nice, they have kitchens in them, but they vary appreciably by size and cost the same depending on number of beds, so ask how big a room is before booking. We were in rooms 242 and 244 I believe and 244 was appreciably nicer. The pool is nice, hot tub is set aside from the pool, and is hot enough, but a little sketchy, it was OK, but not great, made me wonder if it was really sufficiently cleaned. The way to get from the rooms to the hot tub involves walking across the parking lot, which is not great, but I was glad that they had a hot tub, it was very relaxing after an emotional day at the hospital. I did appreciate having the kitchen though I had originally thought that was unnecessary but having the fridge and a way to heat up food proved quite useful. The one thing I'd say is that the chairs were old fashioned, the rest of the place was VERY well updated with great bathroom counters and cute soap dishes. The two chairs in both rooms we were in were mismatched and not particularly attractive. I think that's an easy thing to fix given all the other nice things they've done to the property. Overall a really good stay I'd stay there again for sure.

"We differ from most reviewers"

24/02/2018

Cannot figure out why this hotel with small rooms and no breakfast included (the apples in the tray are no acceptable substitute) is so well thought. The room was small and the floor creaky. The price is too high and a short distance you can find another Best Western cheaper and with breakfast included. The morning cleaning crew chatting in the outside connecting passageway was annoying. Yes, the location is good but, for most things you need to get into a car so no fantastic advantage there. This was our only sour note to our two day stay in Santa Barbara and the worse for an extended 14 day trip to California.

"Hospitality"

5
11/02/2018

If you need to be close to Cottage Hospital this is the place to stay. Christie has the room for you. She is helpful and friendly. Sonia is the best when it comes to room service. Our room was spotless. We have stayed at the Encina Lodge before and again we were not disappointed. By the way...eat at the restaurant attached to the lodge...it is very good....the best oatmeal in town, all the meals are delicious.

"Wonderful stay"

Was able to bring our small dogs; a plus when traveling. Good location, clean rooms, pleasant staff. Good value for the money. Could use more sound deadening materials for the courtyard area since it's near a main street...

"Great value for money"

We had the family rooms with kitchenette which was great for our group (3 adults and 3 children). The pool is nice and it's so close to the city center. We stayed only 3 nights but wish we stayed longer. Rooms were clean, kitchenette not too big but had all we needed.

"Comfortable and Clean"

The hotel itself has a unique set up. The rooms are very clean, and we'll stocked. Refer and coffee maker in each room. If you're a pillow person they have Plenty! Also, your own robe in the closet :)

Stayed here for a work-related event. Very pleasantly surprised at how nice the hotel is! The restaurant is very good, too. We usually stay near the wharf when visiting SB, but this is a very nice alternative. Great, friendly staff, too!

"Great place to relax"

06/01/2018

This is a very pretty and serene place to go for some rest and relaxtion. It has a pretty and relaxing courtyard pool area and a nice peaceful bird aviary to enjoy and the rooms are very clean and sanitary and come with a little patio or balcony sitting are. A must if you visit Santa Barbara.

"Out of the way, but worth the stay"

04/01/2018

This hotel is next to the hospital (which is great just in case...), however, it's not walking distance to the busy part of State Street. That being said, it was a great value for our family. The front desk staff is super nice. Actually, we interacted with Housekeeping and Maintenance and they were great too! The many varieties of coffee all day is a plus. The restaurant was yummy for breakfast. We will definitely be back in the summer to enjoy that pool of theirs!

Loved our stay for a quick getaway in Santa Barbara. Great location for a visit! Would definitely stay here again. Very roomy and comfortable. The amenities were perfect for our girls getaway. Looking forward to the next time.

30/12/2017

Excellent property, great room. Potential guests should note that the property is in a residential neighborhood with no other restaurants or stores around and narrow residential streets to navigate to and from the freeway. Also, breakfast is not free. The in-house restaurant, however, is very good. The scallion potatoes with my omelet in the morning were probably the best breakfast potatoes I have ever eaten, and I am 72.

"Exceptional value and quality for a BW Plus!"

30/12/2017

I've stayed in many Best Western Plus hotel locations, and so far, this hotel near downtown Santa Barbara is my favorite! It's clean, nicely set up for comfort, includes all the amenities and many extras, has a wonderful staff, and is in a great location for a quiet and peaceful night while still close to restaurants and the downtown areas.

"So accomodating!"

23/12/2017

When our home was placed under mandatory evacuation due to encroaching fires, the Encina came to our rescue by offering a quiet, spacious, pet-friendly room at a discount rate. The accommodations, restaurant, and staff were all great and we're thankful they were there. If you're coming to Santa Barbara to visit, or if you live in Santa Barbara and need to recommend a place to visitors, please consider the Encina. They really care about their neighbors and their city!

"Our home for 3 nights during evacuation from the Thomas Fire"

18/12/2017

We booked two rooms for three nights while we were evacuated from Ojai during Thomas Fire. The staff couldn't have been more accommodating. They allowed us to check in early. Our elderly parents had a ground floor room near the handicapped parking spaces. The rooms were clean and comfortable. When our parents had difficulty with the tv at first, the office sent someone promptly to show them how to use it. Under trying circumstances for us due to concern about the fire, we found the Encina Lodge & Suites to be very comfortable.

"Hospital near the hospital where family member had surgery"

16/12/2017

Under type of trip This trip was for medical surgery as the hospital is across the street. The area is safe and I was able to walk back comfortably at night fromt he hospital . This was also during the fire in Ventura and it was a pleasant place to escape to. The restaurant across the parking lot was very nice and reaonable.

"Avergae but not the worst in the area"

10/12/2017

I go to Santa Barbara 3-4 times a year this was the first time at this hotel. It was convenient for access to the Sansum Clinic and I would stay again but this time I would know what to expect. The room was over furnished and very small. The Queen bed seemed like a full it was so small but comfortable. The parking was limited but that is because of the fires in the area there was a lot of fire equipment in the parking area. there is no breakfast offered but there is a restaurant on the property, I did not use the restaurant or bar. The room was next to a utility room it was noisy. It is better then Motel 6 but not as nice as the BW in Goleta.

"Horrible front desk."

As titled. Also the power went out for 5 hours during my stay. I asked around to see if this happens often. Apparently it's an issue in the area. Yet still this place had no back up power generators. Just imagine the potential complications associated with it.

Anthony I, General Manager at Best Western Plus Encina Lodge & Suites, responded to this review
Dear Pu H, As I'm sure you've heard by now, the Thomas Fire has burned over 106,000 acres in the Ventura and Santa Barbara County area over the last 3 days. As a result of this fire, all areas from south Ventura County to north Santa Barbara County were without power for several hours on the night of your stay. Literally hundreds of thousands of people without power. Some of these people fleeing the fire with little notice to evacuate. How lucky you were to be in a safe location, with a small inconvenience of no electricity for a short time. Power outages are not common at the hotel, this does not happen often as you stated above. The Encina Team strives to ensure the comfort of all guests at all times. In times of emergency, we would hope that our guests would all work together to ensure a calm and respectful environment for both guests and staff. We are happy to report that we have welcomed many evacuees to the hotel with gracious and warm hospitality. We hope that you join us in sending well wishes for the safety of the fire victims and the utmost gratitude to the fire fighters and first responders. Sincerely, Anthony I.

Great stay. I would stay here again. Everyone was very helpful, the room was clean and ameneities were great. Walking distance to Cottage Hospital. Functioning internet, small gym, and pool. Cafe looked good and coffee was always available. The oranges in the room were a great touch!

This is a very clean, well-run establishment. The grounds are maintained with plants and trees everywhere. I was traveling with my husband, his mom and our best friend. The 2 bedroom suite was perfect for the 4 of us. We loved the kitchen and large living room that had a large couch and chair for plenty of seating. I was able to take a nap in our room with plenty of quiet and privacy. We all had a great time in our "tree house" suite upstairs and will surely stay there again!

Anthony I, General Manager at Best Western Plus Encina Lodge & Suites, responded to this review
Greetings R3000JTkarend, I am so pleased to read that you found our 2 bedroom suite to be a good fit for you and your family. It really is so nice to be able to spread out and be comfortable with family and friends while traveling. The new furnishings in the suites offer such nice, updated accommodations. Please keep in mind for your next visit that the hotel offers a variety of suites that may be a good fit for your group. We look forward to welcoming you back. Cheers, Anthony I.

19/11/2017

For value, amenities (on site cafe, pool, fresh morning coffee, fruit and water in room, refrigerator) and pleasant surroundings, I'll be staying here over the Kimpton from now on, at about one third the price! I prefer the quiet. The bed wasn't quite as comfy as I like, but it was fine. The room was immaculate, and check in was quick with the charming front desk manager. Well done.

"The Best Hotel"

18/11/2017

The best customer service out there!! Always a good stay. The only place I stay when I'm in Santa Barbara. The hotel cafe has great food and it's right there. The staff is so friendly and helpful. The rooms are clean and the beds are comfortable, always a good night's sleep. I don't have any negative comments. Nice staff!!

"Excellent staff and service in this Santa Barbara gem"

17/11/2017

Excellent service and stay in this lovely hotel tucked away near the Cottage Hospital in a charming and safe neighborhood. Everyone was so helpful and supportive during the time we spent at the hospital. The front desk manager was superb in helping us arrange an extended stay because of medical reasons. In all, we ended up staying over a month! I felt so secure and safe staying there during an uncertain time. It meant a lot to me that this lovely hotel was my home base. The restaurant, lounge, and pool are so inviting and comfortable. I was so impressed that I'm returning for a week in December!

"A Terrible Hotel Experience"

14/11/2017

My family of 4 stayed at this hotel for one night. We were in town for a wedding. We were all tired after the wedding festivities and decided to forego showers that night. I? was the first one to attempt a shower at 7 AM the next morning.when I? turned on the water in the tub, the water gushed out and along with the big burst of water was a lot of small black ants, some alive and some dead. It was so disgusting. I? went to the front desk to check out and demand a complete refund. The manager on duty hesitated to do it. He gave the excuse that he couldn't reach his boss. I said I? will call the credit card company to stop payment. This is when he finally agreed to issue refund. I? believe it's poor business practice. I? have traveled all over the world and I? have never experienced anything like this.

Anthony I, General Manager at Best Western Plus Encina Lodge & Suites, responded to this review
Dear cualebieng, Of course I am concerned after reading your review. We regret any inconvenience for any of our guests at any time. After researching this situation I see that my team provided you a full refund. Please note that our staff consistently strives to maintain our facility to adhere to our high standards. As with all facilities, there are unfortunate maintenance issues that arise. Our staff acts swiftly to address any unexpected issues with the objective of maintaining the comfort of our guests. Please accept our sincere apology for this isolated incident. Best regards, Anthony I.

The BW Encina provided a very comfortable stay following a planned surgery. Everyone is very friendly and caring. Location is also very convenient to hospitals, doctors offices, shopping, restaurants etc. Located in a quiet neighborhood area it is also a great area for walks.

"Clean but old"

10/11/2017

Staff is friendly. Hotel rooms are clean. Hotel furniture/decor/amenities are extremely outdated and in need of updating. Bed was comfortable. Everything worked. Restaurant attached to hotel has great food (try the pancakes and Santa Barbara wrap). Would I stay again? Unlikely, but I would in a pinch.

"Nice stay in one of the suites"

09/11/2017

We stayed in a 2 bedroom suite, which was more of an apartment than a hotel room (good thing!). Spacious and clean but a little dated inside. The grounds are well cared for and its a 10-15m walk to the shops and restaurants on state street.

Beautiful hotel, service was great, pool and spa were very clean and the restaurant was super convenient. Loved the room besides the beds, those were quite hard for me! Definitely would take another trip there again, had a great time

"Nice place, however, small rooms and uncomfortable beds"

3
07/11/2017

Stayed here in Nov. 2017 while attending a wedding in town. The hotel was clean and charming but the rooms seemed to be quite small and you could really hear your neighbors quite clearly. I also had issues with the bed as I kept waking up in pain. I travel all over the world for work and stay in many hotels, including other BW properties but this particular bed/location did not work out to well for me. It was hard and uncomfortable. My wife didn't seem to have to many complaints but I was not to happy with it. I was also not to thrilled that the room was rather dark and since the door was on the outside of the hotel, if I opened the curtains to get some light in, everyone walking by can see in the room which I was also not fond of because there seemed to be quite a bit of traffic walking by. I know that the area is a bit pricey also, but I do think that what you get for the price here is not that great but you are also not going to find much cheaper anywhere in town. We did not get this room because of the price though. We chose it because of the proximity to the event we were attending and we have stayed in other properties and had good experiences. I did not think this one was that great for the price you have to pay. I would rather pay a little more and have a bigger room and more comfortable bed.

"Not impressed"

3
04/11/2017

Overall not impressed given the price we paid. The good: 1) spacious rooms 2) clean 3) friendly and efficient check in and staff. The bad: 1) old plumbing - our toilet keeps running and making noises long after it has flushed. It was like that as soon as we walked in (sounded like someone had just flushed it but had obviously been like that for agesssss) 2) old electrics in the bathroom - all the fans etc sound super rickety and loud 3) paper thin walls - we can clearly hear our neighbours talking next door which is annoying when you are trying to get to sleep at 10.30pm after a long day. I appreciate that we could have raised points 1 and 2 with management but after a long day we were too tired to deal with that for only a 1 night stay and really I think management should be properly checking the rooms before guests stay (via feedback from housekeeping) so that guests don't have to raise these issues after they have already lugged their luggage up to the room.

"Best, Best Western Ever"

01/11/2017

This particular BW is the best. Glassware vs, plastic cups, sanitary, remote controls, cleanliness, excellent/friendly staff, beautifully landscaped, minutes from downtown/State Street. Reasonable room rates... We WILL stay here again!

"This is a Gem"

5
01/11/2017

We enjoyed the neighborhood location because it was close to wineries, freeway, beaches and walking distance to great neighborhood dining. The room was well maintained, clean and fresh smelling. The staff are inviting and helpful, yet respectful of our privacy. One of my favorite hotels in the BW brand.

"Quaint, quiet great amenities and location"

28/10/2017

We brought our mother's to visit our daughters in college. Great location for family gathering. We could meet at pool or Live Oak Cafe open 7am-9pm. Cafe is great place to grab a bite and recharge also, food is above average breakfast, lunch and dinner (Beer Wine Only). Service of cafe staff and hotel are great, both friendly and attentive. Rooms are clean and comfy, good linens, beds etc. Well appointed extras like complimentary fruit and water. Overall great vibe and friendly smiles from housekeeping and grounds keepers. The property includes multiple buildings for accommodations. This is my 12th visit to Santa Barbara but only my 3rd at Encina Lodge. I don't plan to stay anywhere else in the future.

"Weekend Get Away"

26/10/2017

What a great place! Quaint, quiet and great place. Close to everything and easy to navigate from. LYFT rides will run you between $7 and $10 per trip just about anywhere in the city. Breakfast and the restaurant was amazing, had the bacon fried rice and had to go back and have it then next day as well. french toast was to die for as well. Keep up the great work Encina staff and we will see you soon!

"Great place to stay"

25/10/2017

For years we have been going to Santa Barbara, and have stayed in multiple places: Hotels, B n B, Air BnB, but there is nothing to beat This Best Western. The rooms, amenities, and value is truly unbeatable and as nothing is too far in the city the location is well worth the stay.

"Best Western Encina, Santa Barbara"

5
25/10/2017

Excellent hotel, close to downtown Santa Barbara. Near the Santa Barbara mission, Paseo Nuevo mall, the historic business district and within 40 minutes driving to Solvang. The beach is minutes away with plenty of public parking. Quiet rooms, comfortable beds and good internet connection. Restaurant onsite. Highly recommend for your next visit to Santa Barbara.

"Home Away from Home"

5
23/10/2017

This was our "home away from home" while attending to my Mom while she was in the hospital. I couldn't have asked for a more accommodating and compassionate staff, they surrounded us with their care, making a difficult situation so much more comfortable. Thank you to Ramon and to the entire staff at the hotel, I will never forget you!

"Bad service."

1
23/10/2017

Due to error in registration, BE management did not even care to acomodate any offering to minimize the cost. Rather, they overcharged for additional night. I used BW in most of my trips, but will never use them again.

"Safety Hazard and Dirty"

1
17/10/2017

My wife and I stayed along with another couple stayed in the Townhouse suite (room 248). This was also move-in weekend for UCSB (September 23-24). We were forced to pay an absurd amount because of the UCSB move-in weekend $381 per night. All rooms were booked and as were most hotels that weekend. When we checked into the hotel at the front desk they immediately asked for our credit card to pay for the full stay when this was not explained when we reserved this 9 months before. When we got into our room it looked like no one had stayed in the room for some time. When we entered the room we noticed that it had not been cleaned in some time as well because there were spider webs in most corners with spiders in them. The light in the kitchen flickered like we were at a rave. When we went upstairs we noticed the same in the rooms with spiders and webs in all the corners. The most concerning thing was the smoke detector in the room had no battery in it and was hanging open. Had we only used the room for basically sleeping for 4-6 hours because of wedding festivities I would have left the hotel. I did not have time to search for another hotel, thus we were stuck. The main reason I will never stay at another Best Western is the customer service. I spoke with the 'customer care' people and they apologized for the hotel accommodations and offered me $150. When I declined that offer they said they would reach out to the hotel personally and have them contact me with 7 business days. When I never heard from them after 2 weeks, I called back and spoke to another 'customer care' person. They said that is an "internal" issue and they will handle internally. Meanwhile I asked what they plan on doing to compensate my horrible experience, they offered me a final offer of $200. They told me that was the final offer and no one would be reaching back out to me. After waiting 2 weeks and filling out the "Survey" they sent me I called back and was basically hung up on. The 'customer care' person kept interrupting me saying they won't be doing anything take it or leave it on the $200. I find that Best Western as a corporate company wouldn't even compensate 1 full nights stay when their hotel not only was dirty, but I'm sure would not meet safety inspections. I did not take any photos because I'm not a high school kid nor was I using profanity in my complaint. I did not think a hotel would not compensate for their error which I submitted the day I checked out.

"Not fancy but homey"

17/10/2017

Close to hospital & also downtown. Varied size rooms, updated & very clean. Restaurant on site has greatly improved in menu selection & ambiance. Hotel staff are helpful & friendly. Although there is a "mini-fridge" in standard rooms, would very much appreciate a small microwave oven in every room.

"Three Good Nights"

15/10/2017

Excellent firm mattress better than a traveler usually finds at this price point. Friendly and helpful front desk staff. Plumbing problem in the bathroom was quickly fixed, The hotel is a bit off the beaten path in a residential neighborhood.

Anthony I, General Manager at Best Western Plus Encina Lodge & Suites, responded to this review
Dear BuceriasBoy, I'm pleased to read that our staff efficiently addressed the plumbing issue. The hotel features special recipe beds designed by Sleep EZ. Wow three nights of good sleep can transform a person. Glad to hear you were so comfortable. If your travels bring you back to the area, I hope you choose to stay with us again. Cheers, Anthony I.

"Great Without Staff"

2
10/10/2017

The motel and room is very quaint, noisy but quaint. However, the staff at the front desk need a serious lesson in customer service. Our lock on the door was broken, the sink was clogged, the tub was clogged, and the keys didn't work on our final day. All were fixed in a timely manner; however, no apologies offered. No "sorry for the inconvenience." And when we had our keys re-keyed, we were met with a condescending lad who treated us as if we were 150 years old and didn't know how to operate a door. Horrible service.

Helen B, Front Office Manager at Best Western Plus Encina Lodge & Suites, responded to this review
Thank you for taking the time to provide your feedback; I also thank you for taking my phone call. Honest feedback like yours always helps us improve and we hope to see you again soon.

We booked one night at this hotel and were very pleasantly surprised at the Quality of the room, we asked for a ground floor room and that is what we were given. There is a bar and restaurant on site which is pretty good value. Its a short drive to the beach and pier.

"Outstanding customer service and lovely property with great location"

04/10/2017

I came to the front desk on my day of check in and requested an early check in as my husband needed to rest, and waiting until check in time would be difficult. They were awesome and told me to they could check me in right away. It made a huge difference to us. Just made my day! Everyone was very friendly. The property is really old Santa Barbara - good feel to it. The rooms were clean. This was a great stay. We've already booked a future visit. Highly recommend this hotel in Santa Barbara. It's not near the downtown beach area though for those who want that. It's more along State Street a little north of the main shopping and downtown vibe. It's across the street from Cottage Hospital, so for anyone needing to stay for visiting the hospital this is a perfect place.

"Brief Overnight Stay"

04/10/2017

Nice property. Added bonus is close proximity to Cottage Hospital and Sansum Clinic if you are having a procedure done or visiting someone in the hospital. That is why we stayed. Only problem we had were ants in the bathroom around sink and tile floor. Upon killing ants we saw the floor in the bathroom area was not very clean. Very comfortable bed! We were in a room right next to the office - was rather noisy at night.

"Great stay"

03/10/2017

Staff was courteous and very helpful. Beds are wonderfully comfortable. Amenities such as fresh fruit, coffee and tea, lotions and shampoo. They offer a Medical Rate for those going to the clinic. Located across the street from Sansom Clinic and Cottage Hospital.

"Overnight Stay"

02/10/2017

Hotel was all right for overnight stay. Room furnishings were dated. Glass wardrobe mirror weren't cleaned well; a/c was very noisy. Initially had much difficulty using the key to unlock door until hotel rep came over and showed how to use the key. Bed wasn't very comfortable. Service personnel were helpful. Location was near the freeway but not accessible to the downtown area of Santa Barbara.

"Very comfortable"

01/10/2017

Older hotel in residential neighborhood. Very well maintained, clean hotel. Little extras in the units; apples, candies, extra bathroom items. I think bottled water. The units around the pool and restaurant area are very nice. Like a little apartment with a balcony.

"Convenient"

Location was a straight shot to the Center of Santa Barbara, which was the host of a variety of restaurants, specialty shops and waterfront. The hotel had a great restaurant with a nice selection on the menu. Pool side rooms area available as well. Hotel within a quiet, residential area.

Great welcome from reception and had a fab room with excellent facilities within. We chose to have a room overlooking the pool which was nice. We were only here overnight and wished we were had stayed longer. There is an onsite restaurant but didn't use as went into Santa Barbara instead so can't comment on the food quality. Would definitely return

This is a good hotel for going to Sansum clinic, it is clean and friendly and has your basic needs. I just wish it had a microwave for when we have special diets and left overs. It has refrig and internet which is helpful and will take you over to Sansum if needed. Has a pool and spa.

"Excellent find"

We were looking for a Hotel close to the Hospital and walkable to restaurants and retail shops. this location was excellent for us. the staff was very accommodating giving us all the information upfront we needed to make decisions on what would happen if we needed to stay longer or leave early. the room was clean and the coffee at the front desk seemed to be always fresh and good.

"Great, Hidden Hotel with Restaurant/Bar"

4
10/09/2017

The hotel is located in a great neighborhood close to downtown Santa Barbara and the 405 Freeway. The Restaurant is a huge benefit and served a great, varied menu in a very pleasant environment. The hotel lobby is pleasant and has a fun little gift shop for travelers. They also left waters and a pack of cookies every day after cleaning which is not usual in the hotel business and was greatly appreciated. I did wish their little workout room was air conditioned and a bit bigger.

"Excellent find."

Facility is very well managed and the employees are well trained--either that or they were well hired, as they are attentive, friendly, and knowledgeable. In addition to a quiet lodging in a nice spot, there is a restaurant associated with the facility that seems to have significant patronage from locals.

My husband was unexpectedly injured in SB while hiking. He was in the hospital for 3 days, and this hotel was a calm, close retreat while I took care of him. We are from out-of-town, and this place had the comforts and kindness of home at a critical time. MANY THANKS to all the staff

Anthony I, General Manager at Best Western Plus Encina Lodge & Suites, responded to this review
Dear mwagner448, First and foremost my team and I send good wishes that your husband is recovering nicely. "Comfort during Health Assessments"

5
01/09/2017

My family and I have been traveling to Sansum Clinic and Cottage Hospital since 1998. Three generations of us have stayed at the Best Western Encina Lodge on Bath Street in Santa Barbara while undergoing tests and surgeries. Our families have rested comfortably and enjoyed the various amenities offered at this excellently run motel while those of us who were being treated were just across the street. Over the years we have stayed at 4 other motels in Santa Barbara, but this is the one that we exclusively book now.

"Lovely hotel"

5
31/08/2017

We contemplated whether to stay closer to the beach but decided on this property instead. Booked one of the townhouses and for a family of five this was more than adequate. Kitchen, laundry on site, restaurant on site and a pool. We left the car and walked to the main road, caught a bus to downtown and also tried the waterfront shuttle to Stearns wharf which cost $.50 one way. So really downtown and the waterfront is easily accessible from the hotel. Staff were friendly and accommodating. Enjoyed our stay here and would recommend.

Anthony I, General Manager at Best Western Plus Encina Lodge & Suites, responded to this review
Greetings 3kpumpkin, I'm so pleased you chose to stay in one of our townhouses as this type of accommodation is perfect for families to have room to stretch out and relax. Great news that you took advantage of the downtown and waterfront shuttle system, not only a great way to get around town but a great way to see the sights. Thank you for taking the time to submit your comments which will assist other guest in understanding our comfortable accommodations as well as our convenient location. Please come back and see us again. Cheers, Anthony I.

"Flexible staff who help us to change a booking"

Staff were very good and helped with changing our booking at check in. They suggested an up grade at a very reasonable additional charge, which helped our situation, thank you. Clean, quiet and spacious room. Parking was on a first come first served basis, but this did not present a problem while we were there. Would stay here again. Taxi required to get to beach and downtown.

"New bed needed"

29/08/2017

Loved the hotel, but the bed itself needed replacing...bedding & pillows were fine though...it may have just been our bed...we were with 5 other couples, and none of them complained about a bad bed...other than that, the pool area was nice and the breakfast in the morning was wonderful...the Eggs Benedict was yummy!!

Had surgery at Cottage Hospital. The location was the best part of the whole experience. The hotel was accommodating of my situation and gave me a room downstairs. The convince made this the best experience

"Acceptable, not exceptional"

23/08/2017

Stayed one night at this hotel during a 10-day tour of the California coast. Prices for Santa Barbara hotels are so expensive, so this Best Western had a good rate and we chose it. The room was acceptable, but not exceptional. Had a bit of a musty smell from the A/C. Had two problems with bathroom: puddle of water on the floor upon check-in (determined by maintenance to be left by housekeeping) and the bathtub would not drain when taking a shower. The drain problem was noticed on the morning of our departure, so no time to have it fixed. No offer of a discount for our problems was offered by management. On the plus side, the front-desk manager was extremely courteous and helpful about things for us to do and see in the city. He also offered advice about the best, scenic drive to LA, which was our next stop.

I was in town because my cousin is at Cottage with a brain annyerism (sp) In light if my situation, the staff at the Best Western Plus Encina & Suites in Santa Barbara (along with the servers at Live Oak Cafe) treated me with honor and respect. I had an enjoyable time.

Very nice staff. Clean and Bed and Breakfast style rooms good quality amenities. In a very quiet area off of the main streets. I always stay at this particular Best Western but it sells out quick due to its popularity.

Great location, close to State St.(10 min.) & Highway 101 in a residential area.Well maintained, very clean older facility offering large bright rooms w/refer.Convenient good restaurant close by,although no free breakfasts like many other Best Westerns and other chains offer.Nice amenities.Draw back for some: NO ELEVATORS to 2nd floor. Some parking under cover.Very expensive on weekends. Friday night $ 90. over weekdays, and add another $ 30 for Saturday nights in season ( summer).Kudos to desk attendant Natalie who graciously pursued dinner reservations for us on a Friday evening when few restaurants would take them. ( She did!) .

Dear luvgr8trvl, Thank you for taking the time to provide your feedback. I appreciate reading your comments. Keep in mind that the Fall and Winter months offer up beautiful weather and prices are lower during these seasons. If you are available, please come back, mid-week November - April to enjoy the lowest rates possible and some of the best weather. See you soon, Anthony I.

Stayed here for a couple of nights with the family. Its in a good location and it has great facilities. The pool was really popular with our kids. They do have guest laundry but its limited to one washer and one dryer - but that was fine. The bar was good and the reception staff could not be more helpful. Complimentary tea & coffee in reception. The rooms were clean and comfortable, parking in the hotel was included free of charge.

Anthony I, General Manager at Best Western Plus Encina Lodge & Suites, responded to this review
Greetings TJB333333, I am so pleased we were part of making great family memories and I hope that we have the chance to welcome you and your family again during your next trip to Santa Barbara. Cheers, Anthony I.

Great 'off the beaten path' Best Western Plus, centrally located in Santa Barbara. Quite, clean and well kept rooms & grounds. Only down side was the failure of the door lock (2 occasions). Staff assisted and all was well. Need to get that fixed. Close to the Mission & State Street. Viva La Fiesta!

"Dissapointed"

31/07/2017

I stayed at this hotel for 5 days. My wife and I was really disappointed with the size and quality of the room when we saw it. They mislead with the pictures on their webpage and there certainly isn't any picture of the room we got on the page. The hotel is not cheap and even though it is located in pricy Santa Barbara you could expect higher standards.

Helen B, Front Office Manager at Best Western Plus Encina Lodge & Suites, responded to this review
Thank you for your feedback; we always appreciate hearing from our guests. I am sorry that you did not like your room. We have many different room types that are different sizes and you are correct the Queen size room is on the smaller size. I only wish that you would have come to the front desk and let us know that you were unhappy so we could have moved you to a larger room; we want all of our guests to be happy.

"Second stay -- still fantastic"

07/07/2017

Stayed here again because of having to visit Cottage Hospital daily and again this hotel delivered. They are very friendly and understanding and take the worry out of logistics when you have to deal with everything related to an extended hospital visit. The suite with full kitchen is a great way to go if you don't want to eat out 3 meals a day. It's a popular spot for non-hospital guests as well. I highly recommend this hotel.

"Excellant Place To Stay"

06/07/2017

We had a 2 bedroom apartment. It was very spacious and plenty of room for the 3 of us. Was well equipped. Could be a place to stay for a week or two. Staff was very helpful and friendly. Would definitely stay here again.

"Fabulous 1 night stay"

This is a very nice hotel, with big rooms and a large comfortable bed. Nice touches with coffee, tea, biscuits, fruit and sweets in the room. Free coffee available all day in the lobby! Friendly staff. No breakfast on offer which is a shame and came as a surprise, especially for the price paid. Free parking.

"Great hotel in a quiet area of Santa Barbara."

02/07/2017

My partner and I stayed at this hotel for 2 nights while on a road trip down the PCH. We had a suite and although a little dated was comfortable and had everything we needed to enjoy our stay. The pool was really nice and warm and although had the odd bug or two in it was really pleasant to cool off in. The reception team were great and assisted us with a top notch recommendation for a steak restaurant called "tee off". A must visit for travellers after a really good steak and service.

Anthony I, General Manager at Best Western Plus Encina Lodge & Suites, responded to this review
Greetings Guy B, So good to read that you enjoyed your stay and I so appreciate your acknowledgement of my team. We all strive to ensure that our guests enjoy a comfortable stay. I agree, the Tee Off is a "must" for one of the best prime rib dinners in town. Please come back to see us as there are so many unique dining options in town and we would be happy to steer you in the right direction. Best, Anthony I.

The hotel was comfortable and the location was great for Santa Barbara. I wish they would have offered a breakfast service for guests because we checked out before their restaurant opened. I would consider using this hotel again on my next visit to Santa Barbara.

"Summer Solstice in Santa Barbara"

01/07/2017

Hotel was great for the being the last minute. Room was nice and roomy. I like the ideal of putting the little fridge under the vanity in the restroom. Also enjoyed the coffee supplied in the room and in the hotel lobby.

Joseph B, Kudos to you for joining our wild and wacky Solstice Celebration - it is one of the most colorful and happiest events of the year. "Graduation Weekend"

26/06/2017

I was completely delighted with this hotel for my son's graduation from UCSB. I selected it one year prior based on the reviews & was not disappointed at all. The staff was friendly & the complimentary Boyd's coffee every morning was delicious. The café on premises was exceptional from the staff to the food served. My son is staying on in Santa Barbara so I will definitely by back!

"Encina"

This is one of the best values in Santa Barbara. If you have appointments at Sansum Clinic, it is located across from the foundation clinic. Love this and the convenience for multiple appointments at various times. The restaurant has great wine and a varied menu of good food.

"Nice hotel"

3
26/06/2017

Nice place to stay if you can't find a bed and breakfast. Quite pricey though for what it is. We paid $348 per night for basically a motel. It was nice that it had a microwave and fridge though. Also some of the parking was covered

"Best Choice for Graduation Weekend"

4
24/06/2017

We stayed here in one of the 2 bedroom suites while attending our daughter's Graduation at UCSB. It was great to have the space to stretch out and a kitchen. It did hurt to pay the price we did for this place, but recognize that this was a very busy weekend in SB. We were overall satisfied with our stay. It hit all the marks we needed for our family celebration.

"Difficult experience"

3
19/06/2017

We love Best Western hotels, but this wasn't our favorite one. It looked like it might be nice at first, but so many things went wrong and it was a bit run down on closer inspection. No complimentary breakfast was offered. Many things in the room were not working and internet password they gave us never worked. They forgot to give us our door keys and then the door was so finicky we had to get a maintenance man to help us. The underground parking was so "tight' we were afraid to park there with our large van, but we had no choice. The ice machine had dirt in the ice. It was a long walk to the front office, pool or restaurant. Beds were very hard. The recliner was comfortable and robes in the closet nice.

Anthony I, General Manager at Best Western Plus Encina Lodge & Suites, responded to this review
Dear 159kristenk, Thank you for taking the time to provide your comments. After reading each comment separately, I am hoping that you reached out to our front desk staff to ask for assistance in addressing your concerns. My staff is dedicated to ensuring that all guests are comfortable throughout their stay. There are several parking options available to guests. I can imagine how frustrating it was trying to park a larger van in the under ground parking option. I am sorry to read that your stay with us was less than desirable and I can assure you that your experience was not typical. I would like to invite you to return and allow us the opportunity to change your opinion about the Best Western Plus Encina Inn & Suites. Sincerely, Anthony I.

"An Oasis In The Heart Of Santa Barbara's Charming Eastside"

5
14/06/2017

The Best Western Plus Encina Inn is an oasis in the heart of a charming Santa Barbara Eastside neighborhood. It is extraordinary well managed and maintained by employees who smile, joke with each other and laugh. And I mean all of them from the housekeepers to the maintenance crew. To me, this says a lot. When the staff enjoys working there, that is transmitted to the guests and adds to the enjoyment of the experience. I attribute this to the superb management style of the General Manager, Anthony, the front desk manager, Helen, and the assistant front desk manager, Christy. The experience of lodging at the Encina is so comfortable. It is like staying in a guest house on the estate of a close friend. Almost all the of the rooms are accessed from exterior entrances, the grounds are open, landscaping is beautiful and there is plenty of parking close to the rooms. Plus it is in a very convenient location. The 101 is only 2 blocks down to Mission and 2 blocks over to both the north and south 101 on and off ramps. Finally, I also want to recognize four additional exceptional personnel. Anna, our housekeeper, Miguel and Luis of maintenance and Hector of grounds keeping with his unique method of sweeping the areas with a long palm frond. You will be delighted with a weekend or extended visit.

Anthony I, General Manager at Best Western Plus Encina Lodge & Suites, responded to this review
Dear Earle G, Thank you for your kind words. It brings a smile to my face and warms my heart reading of your level of satisfaction with the hotel, the staff and amenities. I am proud of each member of my team, they are all true "Hospitality Professionals" and I thank you for your recognition of their dedication. Thank you for the opportunity to enjoy you as our guest. Kind regards, Anthony I.

Excellent hotel. Stayed in a pool suite for the second time in 3 months. Only nitpicky feedback is that the pool is cold. Great rooms, great staff and love the location. We really enjoy this hotel and will look to stay there every time we visit.

"A Great Family Stay"

5
31/05/2017

Our family stayed in one of the two bedroom suites and enjoyed every minute. There is a pool, an aviary, a spa, lovely landscaping and a terrific restaurant on site. The location is excellent. We recommend the Lodge highly.

" Over the top service! "

29/05/2017

We had to unexpectedly relocate to the hospital for two weeks to care for my mother. Ramon, Theresa, and Helen made the experience so smooth for all of us during such a tough time. The property is really big and the apt we stayed in was big and very fair priced for what you get. We were three so long we used the laundry and the cafe. Both amenities were very key. Cafe has really good food. Did the shrimp tacos, barbecue chicken quesadillas and eggs Benedict. All were very good, I ate them multiple times. Great people, great property, great location especially for hospital

"Great place to stay"

26/05/2017

The grounds are immaculate and the staff is noticeably the most accommodating and friendly I have encountered. The restaurant on site is not only convenient but served delicious food. The room was like a small apartment. Overall, a wonderful experience.

Encino Lodge & Suites in general offers a nice, safe, comforting, peaceful surrounding. Good for those who need hospital care, or other. The grounds are maintained nicely, and the small pool setting nice to have access too.

"Charming Stay "

24/05/2017

We usually travel BW and have come to expect typical rooms. This was a little small but all was updated, very clean and supplied with wonderful treats. The bathroom was especially nice. There was also a cafe/ bar on the premises, and several small restaurants within walking distance.

"Excellent Customer Service"

23/05/2017

The staff was very kind to give me the flexibility to move my reservations dates depending on the birth of my granddaughter. Most importantly, I was able to communicate with them easily and they were very empathetic to my situation. Very professional and kind.

"Not what you'd expect"

22/05/2017

Disappointed in my room. Paid a lot of money for an outdated room which was crowded with equally outdated furniture. I am usually a fan of best westerns and I was expecting something a lot better than what I got.

I am very sorry that you were disappointed; we are in the process of updating our guest rooms. Please contact me directly if your travels bring you back to Santa Barbara and I am sorry that we did not exceed your expectations. Sincerely, Helen

"What a Pleasant Surprise!"

5
15/05/2017

Last night of seven day Central California vacation so thought we'd go a little more reasonable on last night. When we planned trip a while back we booked high-end hotels so thought we'd go lower budget for the last night. Lower budget yes, but this hotel had all the amenities (if not more), than the higher end places we stayed at along the way! VERY clean room... recently remodeled, with extras such as fresh fruit in room, sanitary remote control, excellent TV, high-end toiletries, complimentary bottled water, etc. NO gross factor in room at all... excellent stay! They even gave us complimentary late checkout... 1:00 PM instead of 11:00 AM!! On top of this, they have an amazing restaurant on premises, perhaps the best hotel breakfast we've ever had. Fresh, organic and tasty. We've stayed at hotels in Santa Barbara for twice the price that weren't any better than the Best Western Encina Inn. Highly recommend and will definitely come back.

"Service is top-notch"

5
07/05/2017

Sometimes I take for granted how important customer service is but staying at the BW Encinas reminded me again. Even though we were staying just one night, we felt like we were given royal treatment. The friendly manager took the time to answer all of our questions, give us information on local restaurants, and offered to make reservations for us. When we had a question about the stove in our room, someone was at our door in less than 2 minutes. We had breakfast at the Live Oaks Cafe and it was so delicious. I'm so glad we didn't venture somewhere else on State street. There's nothing negative to say about this hotel.

"Wonderful place to relax"

5
07/05/2017

We stayed here for two nights and after staying at a lot of hotels and motels on our trip this was the best by far. Even Vegas was not as good as this one. On arrival we were met in a pleasant, friendly way and invited to fresh fruit and coffee whilst we checked in. We were given instructions on what to see, where to visit and where to eat. On going to our room we were pleasantly surprised by the size of it,the layout and the cleanliness that greeted us. One very welcome addition was the two lounge chairs in which to relax and not have to sit on the bed. The bed was very comfortable and the whole area was very quiet. The bathroom was very spacious and spotlessly clean. The restaurant on site has great meals and breakfast as well. Overall a great place to stay.

Very helpfull staff, Good possition of the hotel to visit Santa Barbara. Nice and clean pool. Very big rooms. More a motel then hotel because breakfast served in the hotel next door. Good restaurant and enough choise.

"Best possible stay near the hospital"

5
03/05/2017

I was pleasantly surprised by how close this property was to the hospital where my son was being treated- literally 1 block. It's also very accessible to the freeway, without the noise of a freeway-adjacent hotel. The room was good sized and clean, and the staff were all friendly, efficient, and accommodating. When we discovered that we were going to have to stay additional nights, they went out of their way to allow us to stay in our room without having to move, and I am pretty sure this meant they upgraded someone else coming in who had reserved our queen bed room. I loved the touch of having cookies, apples and bottled water in the room, and the food voucher when we stayed 5 nights. My husband and I are middle-aged and appreciate a comfortable bed, which this was. I stay in a lot of hotels, and I rarely say this- it was a perfect stay for us during a very stressful visit to Santa Barbara.

"Average hotel"

3
26/04/2017

The hotel is in a beautiful area, this hotel is convenient to shopping, beaches, etc. the rooms need to be updated with fresh carpet, working outlets, working plumbing. Staff was very nice and tried their best to accommodate your needs. Noise was a factor from other tenants.

"Excellent staff, clean, very well kept property."

5
22/04/2017

I stayed for three weeks due to a job change. The front office staff (particularly Roe, Teresa and really all of them), management (Anthony) and cleaning and maintenance make all the difference. They are extremely professional and nice, it is all about the staff. This is a safe, clean, well maintained property. A phenomenal value at walking distance from The Mission, Cottage Hospital and State Street shopping. I hope they can keep it up, is the best value in Santa Barbara by far.

"Lovely place to stay"

"A really convenient Santa Barbara suite hotel"

4
13/04/2017

We chose to return to Encina after having a good experience at Christmas time. We like having an apartment with a kitchen, and loved being poolside, where our grandchildren could join us. When we arrived, Encina had had a terrible leak in several of the poolside rooms. We were able to get a room at the end, where we were not bothered by the clean-up crew. The staff is friendly and helpful, and the suites, although a bit old-fashioned, are very comfortable. My only complaint is that Best Western has decided to put "pod" coffee makers in all their hotels. This is just not acceptable in a suite with a kitchen. Pod coffee makers just don't make very good coffee, and I want the option of making a whole pot. I borrowed a coffee maker during my stay. I would definitely stay here again. I think it's worth paying a bit more to have a suite or apartment complete with maid service.

"comfortable hotel in quiet area near center"

4
11/04/2017

The hotel consists of a series of apartment type buildings on a residential street. Although the style is somewhat outdated, the rooms are well appointed, very well maintained and very clean. The -independent -"Live Oak" restaurant is a gem; although the interior is outdated they offer a great menu with food that's of high quality at reasonable prices.

"Shabby"

2
07/04/2017

For the price of $263 per night, I expected more. The room was shabby and drafty. We had rm 271, the carpet between the beds was ripped, the heat source for the room was a small old fashioned wall heater, the toilet leaked at the base, the wallpaper in the bathroom was peeling, the mini fridge had to be unplugged due to a high pitch noise. We won't stay here again.

"Cozy and cute"

5
27/03/2017

Very nice hotel; good location and great price value. Very welcoming stuff and express check-out available. Walking distance from the lovely State Street. Very competitive prices. The rooms are big and clean and cute.

"Santa Barbara Encina"

15/03/2017

Great rooms. Great view of the pool. Odd that the hot tub is not next to the pool. Needs more variety in food options in the restaurant. And the staff should learn about guests that may pay with points such as myself.

"Best service"

Theresa at the Front Desk was beyond helpful, on a very busy weekend with a last minute addition to our party she help us upgrade to a 2 bedroom suite which is very confortable and it even has a bathtub!!

"Great Hotel!"

28/11/2016

This was our 2nd visit to this hotel. It's very good value. Lovely, super clean rooms with really nice linens. The restaurant on the property is amazingly good! A sweet touch is the aviary outside, full of brightly colored finches. The front desk staff is very nice, professional and helpful. They also have fresh coffee, with to-go cups, on offer 24/7. There is also an outdoor swimming pool. I would highly recommend this property to all; couples, singles, families and business travelers. Can't say enough good things. It's my husband's new favorite in Santa Barbara!

"The best hotel in Santa Barbara"

5
28/11/2016

The Encino Lodge is a wonderful place to stay. The management and staff are extremely friendly and accommodating. The disabled apartment is a great addition. My father-in-law was able to comfortably use the bathroom and shower. The food at Live Oak Restaurant was tremendous. We cannot say enough about how wonderful our stay was!

"Surprisingly exceeded our expectations"

5
24/11/2016

We really weren't expecting much for a BW property but this one was quite nice. The bed was super comfortable and the room was nice and spacious. It would have been even better if we had a balcony. The food in the restaurant was amazing, and even though breakfast isn't included, preferred it to the other restaurants nearby. I agree with the other reviewers and like how the location of the property was tucked away in a quiet area. I didn't like however how small the pool was and I never went because it was always crowded and I couldn't find anywhere to sit. It also would have been nice if there was a hot tub. Besides that, I'm glad I chose this hotel and felt like I got the most value in terms of pricey SB hotels.

"CONVENIENCE WITH CONFORT"

22/11/2016

Within walking distance to Cottage Hospital in Santa Barbara. Professional and friendly staff with wonderful attitudes. Rooms are clean and fresh smelling. For business travelers there the WiFi is fast. Restaurant is within the same parking area with great food and service. They also offer room service. Beds are very comfortable.

"Rude, unkind receptionist on 11.17.16"

2
18/11/2016

I've stayed here twice now - both times I was having jaw surgery and my surgeon recommended this place as they offer a (small) medical discount. The first time I stayed for surgery, the staff were fantastic (Nov 2015) but this past week there were a couple of incidents I felt compelled to write about here. Upon check in around 9pm of 11.14.16, the guy was super abrupt and unfriendly, but it was not a huge deal, just disappointing. However upon checkout at 2.30pm on 11.17.16 the bill was a LOT higher than I was expecting, so I went to the reception to ask them to talk me through the charges. Mind you, my face was massively swollen, my head wrapped in thick bandages and I could barely speak as my jaw was frozen shut. The woman got in my face with her voice raised and a horrible snotty attitude. Again, I could barely speak and looked a mess. I managed to say, "I'm fragile and trying to cope with this right now, please don't shout at me." And the woman laughed and said she wasn't yelling. She acted as though I was a total pain because I didn't immediately understand the bill. Thank god my post-op carer was with me for support. You would think the hotel staff member might be patient and kind to someone who can't even speak and was obviously in pain. But no. I was frankly appalled by this. In future I will stay somewhere else. If you choose to stay here, be prepared to feel like the customer doesn't count.

"Tired old motel"

2
13/11/2016

This place is straight out of the 80's with a modern bathroom and a flat panel. The wall safe is too small to fit anything, the furniture looks like it's from an estate sale, and the bed and pillows are the rocks you'd expect from an old hotel. However, the staff was very nice, providing a flashlight and great directions and tips for walking too distant restaurants late in the evening.

"Fabulous hotel and staff"

5
10/11/2016

We arrived prior to check in and received a very warm welcome. We had several appointments and the staff was extremely helpful with directions. Front office was helpful with maps, fruit, water and coffee. Our room was comfortable, clean and spacious. The on-site restaurant is elegant with great food. Next time you visit Santa Barbara this is the place to stay. Wish there was a 6 star rating.

Arrived 3 hours before check in. Reserved a 2 bed room and got upgraded to a two bedroom suite. We were able to cook our own lunch and dinner. The rooms are a little dated with the wallpaper but it was very clean. Close to the Santa Barbara Bowl and all the restaraunts and bars on State St. We checked out closer to 1pm with no trouble at all which I appreciated. The hotel has a farm to table restaurant but did not try it. The pool looked clean. We had everything we needed for a pleasant stay and if we needed anything we had no trouble getting it from the front desk. I will stay here again when visiting Santq Barbara.

"Really Nice Hotel"

We stayed here for a lacrosse tournament. Easy to get to, comfortable rooms and good service. Restaurant on site was a terrific bonus. Great breakfasts (try the pancakes), excellent service and fabulous value. Had dinner one night and we were very impressed with the service, food and variety of beer and wine.

The hotel had a shuttle that picked us up from Santa Barbara airport earlier than our expected check in time. We we re upgraded to a king size room for no charge. The hotel restaurant was good for breakfast, the ground were well kept, clean and safe. The room was slightly outdated, but very clean. Bed was comfortable, refrigerator was a nice surprise, and return airport shuttle was helpful!

Anthony I, General Manager at BEST WESTERN PLUS Encina Inn & Suites, responded to this review
Dear Stephanie Z, It is our pleasure to offer complimentary shuttle service to/from the airport and Amtrak Station as we understand what a convenient service it is for our guests. We hope you come back and stay with us soon. Cheers, Anthony I.

Great service and hotel, we got a room with a kitchen, with a huge oven, fridge and all equipment to cook. Very convenient for breakfast, we even cooked a dinner here. Big and comfortable room. Very quiet surroundings, nice walk downtown. Would stay here again.

21/10/2016

Due to sad family circumstances I have had the good fortune to find this hotel to help me through. Only a block away from COttage Hospital with special rates if you have someone at hospital. Very clean and comfy. Staff is so friendly and helpful. Restaurant is very good ! Real bath mats in the bathroom, ceiling fans, complimentary bottled water, fruit, cookies. Walking distance to downtown if you can do a mile or two. Peaceful and quet, not on highway. Great place to stay, reasonable prices for Santa Barbara.

Very convenient location that is fairly close to 101 Freeway. Rooms very clean and the hotel staff is generally accommodating and professional. Price is reasonable for this area. Would definitely recommend.

19/10/2016

I spent 6 nights to be with my brother who was having open heart surgery at nearby cottage hospital. The staff picked me up at the train station. They shuttled me to and from the hospital. They found and let me borrow a phone charger. The room and amenities were excellent but the entire staff was incredible. Their help and great attitudes were "over the top". I also enjoyed the good food at the charming restaurant. They could give "Customer Service Lessons"

"Great Santa Barbara place to stay"

17/10/2016

This hotel has nice very clean rooms and the people working there are always helpful and also welcoming. The area is quiet and yet close to downtown Santa Barbara. They have a very nice restaurant on the property and the food and service is excellent. The pool area is well kept and relaxing to sit at and read. They also have complementary parking which is so nice. So many hotels charge to park.

Anthony I, General Manager at BEST WESTERN PLUS Encina Inn & Suites, responded to this review
Kathie Z, My staff continually strives to ensure a comfortable stay for all guests. I am so grateful to read your kind comments. In addition to the complimentary parking we offer a host of complimentary in-room amenities such as bottled water, fresh fruit and sweet treats. I hope to have the opportunity to welcome you back soon. Best, Anthony I.

Stayed 2 nights with my daughter for a lacrosse tournament. A very comfortable and quiet neighborhood setting a couple of blocks away from State Street shops and restaurants. Easy walk to dinner and back.

"Lovely room"

10/10/2016

Great place to stay. Our room was upgraded to a suite , it was huge. Nice and clean and all amenities . No breakfast but restaurant on site which looked nice but we didn't use. Santa Barbara beach is 30 mins walk away , but restaurants about ten mins drive in taxi. Don't try and walk anywhere !! British tourists set off for the short walk!! Stop !!! No street lights ! Pitch black! It's ridiculous , why don't people walk in California ? It's lovely ! Anyway they don't , nice hotel man will sort you a taxi out , about $8 plus tip. Decent shop at the hotel, plenty of free parking, pool looked fine.

"Nice motel for 1 night stay"

09/10/2016

Stayed in a 2 bedroom suite. Plenty of room for my family of 5, except small bathroom. Would've thought with the size of the suite, the bathroom might have been bigger. Check in easy, staff were pleasant. Didn't get to explore the surrounding area as we got in late afternoon and left early the next morning. We ate at the Live Oak Café, food and service were great.

Anthony I, General Manager at BEST WESTERN PLUS Encina Inn & Suites, responded to this review
Dear Nicole R, I do hope you have the opportunity to come back and stay a few days to experience all that Santa Barbara has to offer. You can literally explore for days! I'm so glad that your family of 5 stayed in one of our 2 bedroom suites. This option really is a nice fit for family travel. I hope to welcome you back soon. Thank you, Anthony I.

"A nice 1 night stop"

4
07/10/2016

We stayed at the Best Western for a 1 night stop. The hotel is located in a very quiet residential part of Santa Barbara which was about 1.5km away from the sea front and the excellent funk zone. Check in / check out was easy and the hotel offered free parking and complimentary coffee which was a massive bonus. The onsite restaurant was very nice and we were served for both lunch and breakfast by Daniel who had A+ customer service. The rooms were very clean and stylish. If I had a complaint I would say it's a bit too compact and the double room I stayed in was very difficult to walk around with luggage thrown into the equation. But overall I enjoyed my stay and would recommend.

"nice location"

4
04/10/2016

this property is nicely situated for getting around santa barbara easily, the freeway is about three blocks away and there are surface streets you can take if you choose to avoid the freeway. The hotel was quiet and like a best western hotel, not real fancy but comfortable. We had no problems with our stay.

"Great staff"

4
01/10/2016

Interesting property. Was condominiums, covered to a hotel. Good sized rooms; property is very spread out, if you don't have a car they will take you by their golf cart to your room. Front desk is great for advice on where to go and eat. Only negative would be the poor quality in-room coffee.

"Friendly staff, awful noise"

27/09/2016

Stayed here once before a little over a year ago and did not have the best experience. Hotel management was quick to respond to my complaints once I returned home and thought I would give this place another chance next time I was in SB. Unfortunately this stay was just as bad. Pool lawn chairs and room furnishings still look old and outdated. Location of hotel is in a residential area which I like. Easy to get in and out of yet close to attractions. Was greeted promptly upon arrival and appreciate the fact that rooms come with small fridges and complementary water and fruit. The main problem came at 8:30 in the morning when hammering started one room away from us. Within an hour they had brought out power tools. The shed where work supplies are kept was right next to our room. Was looking forward to sleeping in since check out is not until 12, but guess not! When I checked out, I played a video recording of the noise in my room and the gentleman looked genuinely surprised. He was the same person who I checked in with. He apologized and gave me a complimentary bottle of wine. If this was my first time here I could be more forgiving. But if I was management I would have made extra certain everything was okay with my room seeing as how my previous visit had been so disappointing. It's upsetting that this Best Western cannot appear to get it right.

"Road Trip"

26/09/2016

We stayed for 2 nights while on a road trip down highway 1, we had a 2 bed apartment which had full kitchen facilities if needed and was well fitted out. A little far away from the beach although we did walk down would be too far if you had younger children but good bus service nearby. Santa Barbara is a lovely relaxed city with loads to see.

Anthony I, General Manager at BEST WESTERN PLUS Encina Inn & Suites, responded to this review
Dear 183kathyl, Thank you for taking the time to provide your comments during your recent visit to Santa Barbara. There really is so much to see and experience in our magical city. I hope you schedule some time to return and we invite you as our guests during your next visit. Warm regards, Anthony I.

"Human Blood on Bedsheets"

1
26/09/2016

**BE AWARE - BLOOD FOUND ON BEDSHEETS** We stayed at the Best Western Plus Encina in September 2016. Upon returning to the room after a day enjoying Santa Barbara, we were getting into bed and noticed human blood on the bedsheets. When we called the front desk to express our frustration, they informed us that the hotel was full and no alternate rooms were available. While housekeeping came and changed the sheets, the fact that management would require us to stay in a room where we found human blood was subpar customer service.

Anthony I, General Manager at BEST WESTERN PLUS Encina Inn & Suites, responded to this review
Dear travelpros6, I am very concerned while reading your review. May I please invite you to contact me at the hotel as I would like to address your experience directly with you. I look forward to the opportunity to speak with you. Sincerely, Anthony I. 800-526-2282.

"Wonderful Stay!"

26/09/2016

I feel Best Western Encina is a wonderful hotel. I felt that the check-in was easy, and staff was polite and professional. I enjoyed the restuarant for my evening meal and was very impressed with the food and service. My room was neat, clean, and large. I appreciated the comfortable bed, and loved the hard candy left in my room. I had a wonderful stay, and will definately stay again.

"Perfect hotel"

5
24/09/2016

This was the perfect hotel for our stay in Santa Barbara. The room was spacious and had a homely feel. The bed was comfy and the bathroom was large. It had everything we needed and was only a short 10 minute walk from downtown and another 10 to the beach.

Anthony I, General Manager at BEST WESTERN PLUS Encina Inn & Suites, responded to this review
David C, My staff and I are so pleased that you found the perfect hotel for your visit(s) to Santa Barbara. We all strive to ensure that our guests enjoy comfortable accommodations during their stay. Please come back and see us soon. Warm regards, Anthony I.

"Good hotel in a good location"

4
22/09/2016

We had a suite in the Fiesta Building, on the second floor. Since we like to walk, it was a good location, although State Street would be a bit far if you wanted to walk all the way south. Loved the kitchen since breakfast is not included. The room was large and very comfortable. The absolutely only drawback was street noise from Los Olivos Street (which dies down later at night, so not terrible) and a humming sound coming from the roof, which I assumed was related to ventilation. But then, I'm very sensitive to sound. Not bad enough to request a change in rooms.

"My favorite Best Western"

21/09/2016

Conveniently located. Pool, hot tub and restaurant. right across the street from Sansum Clinic. close to beaches if your are driving. Close to some really fabulous restaurants if you are driving. the staff is always friendly and as many times as we have stayed here, we actually know some of them.

"Great place "

Although this trip was for medical reasons, it was very pleasant and convenient to stay in a nice place and within walking to the medical facility for our appointments, cuts way down on the stress and hassle

Anthony I, General Manager at BEST WESTERN PLUS Encina Inn & Suites, responded to this review
Hello Geraldine D, Although your trip was for medical reasons, I thank you for taking the time to write a review of your recent stay. Our location and accommodations really are perfect for those visiting the local medical facilities. Very comfortable hotel with good location and nice pool. Suites are very nice and have full refurnished cooking area. I would recommend the suite accommodation, especially for families with children or friends who travel together. In the hall we found complimentary coffee, tee and fruits in the morning and lemonade in the afternoon.

Stay here when working for Cottage Hospital, but hotel is in convenient location for work, going to restaurants, beach, wharf & access to highway. Like convenience of on site restaurant since changed hands as well as reasonably priced menu. Aviary next to restaurant & pool is relaxing to watch finches & has always been kept clean.

Anthony I, General Manager at BEST WESTERN PLUS Encina Inn & Suites, responded to this review
Greetings 373barbaraanna, It is so nice to read how well our hotel works for you during your travel into Santa Barbara. The Live Oak Cafe, highlighting many of the extraordinary products that Santa Barbara has to offer including: local produce, seafood, local wine, and craft beer, has been a great addition. I will be sure to pass along your kind comments to the restaurant owner. I look forward to welcoming you back upon your return. Best, Anthony I.

"Hospital surgery"

09/09/2016

I was at this hotel because it was across from the hospital. The treatment at the hotel was excellent and caring of our situation. They were very understanding of my wife's needs as I was in the hospital. The room was great. We had a king sized bed which was very clean and comfortable, They had wifi and a large TV with multiple channels. All and all we had a great experience under the circumstances.

ChivaunC, General Manager at BEST WESTERN PLUS Encina Inn & Suites, responded to this review
Dear Herbert P, I do hope that you are recovering well. Please come back and see us under different circumstances. It would be our pleasure to welcome you back at the Encina Inn & Suites. Best, Anthony I.

"Holidays"

5
03/09/2016

We spent 4 days in this hotel during our holiday trip ( total 25 nights). This was definately one of the best hotels we had during our trip. Rooms were good, staff was very friendly and service excellent. Breakfast was very good ( the best we have experienced in 25 days) and was reasonable priced. Swimming pool is small / basic, though of you come early you can find a good spot. We walked from the hotel to downtown which is a nice 20 min walk ( beach is 10 min extra walking).

"Lovely, peaceful and friendly."

31/08/2016

Stayed just one night while travelling highway 1. Room was really nice, comfortable beds with lots of space and nice touches such as good quality toiletries and robes. Our room was in a block away from the main hotel and was based around a nice little court yard - very nice. Pool and hot tub also very good standard. Didn't eat in the hotel but the bar was light, open and friendly, and the menu looked good. Obviously good attention to detail. I would stay again.

Anthony I, General Manager at BEST WESTERN PLUS Encina Inn & Suites, responded to this review
Greetings Ian F, I know that there are many lodging choices in Santa Barbara and I am so pleased you chose to stay with us during your travels on Hwy. 1. I appreciate you taking the time to let us and others know of your appreciation of the hotel and our amenities. "CLEAN, QUIET, COMFORTABLE AND EXPENSIVE"

4
27/08/2016

We travelled to Santa Barbara to watch the Old Spanish Days Fiesta parade on August 5. The hotel prices for that night were outrageously priced. We chose the Best Western Encina Inn & Suites on Bath Street. After getting over the shock of the price we enjoyed our room. The location was safe. Our room was small but very comfortable and well appointed. The bed was very comfortable. The hotel staff was friendly. We took a taxi to the parade location in the morning and later to the Paseo Nuevo shopping mall to watch the Flamingo dancers.

Anthony I, General Manager at BEST WESTERN PLUS Encina Inn & Suites, responded to this review
Greetings Cotoman, I am so pleased to read that you had the opportunity to experience the Fiesta celebrations around town. It truly is a magical time in our city. Thank you for providing your kind comments about the comfortable and well appointed room and our friendly staff. We all strive to ensure each guest enjoys a comfortable and memorable experience. Please come back next year during Fiesta as there is so much to see and experience. Be sure to book direct with the hotel to ensure you will receive the lowest rates. Viva La Fiesta, Anthony.

"No elevator and no help with luggage"

3
26/08/2016

We were on a road trip with the family and had a lot of luggage but this hotel had no elevator. My room was right above the reception and when I had to carry my 5 suitcases for my family to the 1st floor, I passed by the reception each time but no one ever offered to give us any help. Other than that, our room is fine. Decent size. Traditional decor.

"Checked in and extended"

5
26/08/2016

Checked in last night "standard king room" really impressed by the room the hotel and the helpful staff we extended our stay by a further two nights. The room is great and the bed is super comfy gives a great nights sleep. Haven't tried the pool yet but it look very inviting.

"Amazing little beachfront town"

5
26/08/2016

The rooms are a bit pricey during summer but we had an amazing time. The staff was very courteous and accommodating. The rooms were lovely and ample. I would recommend this hotel to anyone as it's located near everything. The pool was very clean and the hot tub was perfect and soothing. The little cafe they have feels like home and like your dining in a garden. The room itself is clean and the layout is lavishing.

"Comfortable stay"

3
18/08/2016

It is a reasonably pleasant "motor inn" style hotel located in a quiet, residential neighbourhood. On the positive side, staff were friendly and the rooms quiet and clean. There is a pretty good restaurant on site, called the "Live Oak". Nicely kept grounds too. But the rooms are a little dated and the rate I paid was a little on the high side once taxes has been added. Overall an OK experience.

"Bargain Pricing....Excellent Service and Value"

5
18/08/2016

I was able to book my stay through Priceline and got a steal of a price. I arrived at 3:30 and was promptly greeted by the Front Desk manager and checked in. They were sold out and very busy, yet didn't rush me at all. The Property is lovely and tucked away in the middle of a quiet and very safe neighborhood. The grounds are spotless. When I checked in, I received a voucher for a free glass of Wine at their on site Restaurant. Took advantage of that little bonus. I was not able to sample the food, but the menu looked great. When I got to the room, I was shocked to see how large it was. I had a full kitchen with an eat in dining area and a large bathroom and two recliner chairs. Bedding was perfect, nice new flat screen TV, and the room was spotless. I would highly recommend this hotel for anyone traveling to SB. It has a nice family friendly location with a great pool area, and perfect for a long term stay with the kitchen. Also, its Just a short cab/ or uber to Downtown or the Beach.

"very comfortable, quiet and well maintained."

17/08/2016

Great spot. Not far from down town. Restaurant on site. Spacious and comfortable for the price. Friendly staff. Only challenge is parking. Get there early or you may have to walk a bit. Our room had a full kitchen. Hotel has recently been updated. Nice for an older building. Reminds me of a swiss chalet.

"Wonderful Property"

5
16/08/2016

Enjoyed our room. It was nice and big, along with a great kitchen with a small stove and microwave. Nice little table and chairs to sit and eat at. Also a nice window in the kitchen to look out. Very relaxing.

"Beautiful Best Western"

5
12/08/2016

This is a beautiful Best Western to stay at, definitely the best one we have been to. Immaculate grounds, kept perfectly landscaped, quiet, serene pool area, beautiful rooms with every amenity you could need covered. Great gift shop in lobby. Nice restaurant right on grounds. Would stay here again and again.

"Excellent hotel chain"

5
11/08/2016

The reception offers tea , coffee , juices , fruit for free , the restaurant is not free but reasonably priced . The hotel is located in a quiet part of Santa Barbara , we stayed here for two nights as part of our holiday on the California west coast .

"At home in Santa Barbara"

5
10/08/2016

We stayed in a double room with a kitchen for 2 nights. The room was very clean and the beds were super comfortable. The kitchen was fully equipped, with a full sized fridge, microwave and gas stove. If you don't want to cook, the Encina has a full service restaurant and bar. The staff are super friendly, great people. The location is very quiet, a neighborhood feel to it. It is just a block away from the hospital. Staying at the Encina is more like being at home than in a hotel. I will definitely stay there EVERY time I am in SB.

"We must have had the loudest room. "

07/08/2016

Our room was above the grounds keepers garage. We could hear everything they were working on starting in the very early mornings. What was most disappointing is some of them smoked while they were working. Smoke came right up through our windows...yuck!

Anthony I, General Manager at BEST WESTERN PLUS Encina Inn & Suites, responded to this review
Dear Jennifer V, Thank you for providing your feedback regarding your recent stay. I am very concerned about your comments regarding smoke coming through your windows. I can certainly understand and appreciate the discomfort you must have experienced and I greatly apologize. Please know that I have spoken to my staff about the acceptable smoking area and the fact that no smoking may take place anywhere but this designated area, which is located away from all guest accommodations. Again, I greatly apologize for your discomfort and I thank you for bringing this situation to my attention which allowed me to promptly address with my staff. Kind regards, Anthony.

"Lovely hotel"

5
05/08/2016

We start here for two nights in a family room with 2 double beds. Lovely and clean and nice touches like bottled water, boiled sweets, fruit, biscuits. Our room had a fridge and safe (very small) along with coffee maker, iron and ironing board. The staff were very friendly and helpful. There is tea/coffee available in lobby too along with a small gift shop. Pool looked nice though we didn't use it. There is a washing machine and dryer for guest laundry (one of each). Reasonably priced at $1.50 per load for washer and $1 for dryer. Detergent available for $0.75 from lobby. Breakfast costs extra if required. Other meals also available at average prices - food delicious and service very good. You also get a voucher for a free coffee when purchasing breakfast or free glass of wine when purchasing a main meal. We walked everywhere; lots of restaurants and lovely shops in the area. We were lucky enough to be there when the Spanish Fiesta was on (first week of August) so the town was a colourful and a happy place. I would recommend this hotel.

Anthony I, General Manager at BEST WESTERN PLUS Encina Inn & Suites, responded to this review
Greetings Melanie P - What a great opportunity you had during your stay to experience Old Spanish Days - a week long celebration of Santa Barbara's Spanish heritage. Please consider coming back next year so you may participate in more of the activities. I am so pleased to read that our hotel and amenities offered a comfortable stay for you and your family. See you next year. Viva La Fiesta, Anthony.

"Good place for families "

4
03/08/2016

We stayed here for 3 nights. The family room was a lot smaller than the other family rooms we had stayed in during this vacation. The 2 double beds were also a lot smaller (double bed size not queen size). This made sleeping as a couple more difficult especially due to the warm room. Air con was present but was preset to 74. This could be lowered but was noisier. The hotel did provide fruit and water , which i thought would be in the first day only but it was provided daily. A nice touch. It was appreciated. Breakfastwas not included but we got a cereal and milk (fridge present in room) from the local Trader Joes. Coffee was present along with a coffee machine. The room was situated at the De La Vina end and this proved ideal for all the great local restaurants on De La Vina. We ended up walking almost everywhere. Overall I would recommend a stay here due to its location near all the restaurants and the natural history museum and the SB mission.

"Clean hotel "

02/08/2016

My husband, daughter and I stopped here on our trip up the coast. It was a Saturday night so lost everything in Santa Barbra was booked up. This hotel was fine for the price. It was clean but not impressive. The decor and furniture are outdated but at least in was spotless. We enjoyed seeing the birds with our young daughter in the morning.

"Great Place to Stay for Families"

5
30/07/2016

Great place to stay on a family trip. Stayed in one of the 'Hacienda' suites and this worked out great for the four of us with plenty of room for all. The suites come with a kitchen and great outdoor patio. Very near the pool and restaurant(Live Oak Café). Easy access off the 101 freeway(Mission St Exit)and to down town and the Mission area.

"Cottage Hospital"

28/07/2016

Stayed here due to family illness. Comfortable rooms, beds, Directv, fruit and cookies in room, refrigerator small but okay. Friendly staff. A/C and some rooms had ceiling fans. No continental breakfast

Anthony I, General Manager at BEST WESTERN PLUS Encina Inn & Suites, responded to this review
Greetings John R. I'm sorry to hear of an illness in your family. I do hope the situation has improved. We feel very privileged that we can offer accommodations so conveniently located to Cottage Hospital, along with a host of complimentary amenities and services. I hope that we can welcome you back while you are traveling for pleasure. Warmly, Anthony.

"Good place"

4
25/07/2016

We stayed for a night. Room consists of 2 queen beds. Seperate wc & shower (rather large), only 1 sink. For an unknown reason we got a smoking room instead of a non-smoking one. Received a bottle of wine to compensate. Must be said that there was hardly any smell in the room. Friendly staff at the reception. Quick check in. Not close to the beach, a couple of blocks from the main shopping street. Gives a good feeling. Breakfast 8-15$/pers

"good place for families with small children"

24/07/2016

We stopped in Santa Barbara overnight on our was to San Simeon and Hearst Castle. Our room was clean, quiet and near the pool (just outside our patio door). The staff was accommodating and gave great information about the local attractions. Although they didn't provide a contenental breakfast, there was a estaraunt on site that was reasonable. We will stay there again when travelling with the grand kids.

"Superb Santa Barbara Gem "

24/07/2016

Great little hotel in a great spot! Super comfortable bed in a spacious room with a full kitchen. Also on a quiet street so you can get a really great night's sleep. I would stay here again. Good value for the price. Friendly staff, good onsite parking.

"Very dated decor but good sized rooms and helpful staff"

3
21/07/2016

Decent location...bit of a walk to state street shopping and restaurants so it is best to drive. Parking was plentiful and cheap. Room décor is right out of the late 70's early 80's so it is a bit of a time warp. But the rooms are well sized and the staff was very helpful with maps, directions and tips for local restaurants. I would stay here again.

"OK"

3
21/07/2016

Maybe we got the last available room out something, in the corner facing the street, with quite the disturbing noise in the morning. Room was clean, I guess, but very dated, crowded and the beds were narrow. After having caught a movie at night there were no available parking when we came back so we had to park on the street. The pool area was decent. No included breakfast, and the on-site restaurant was both expensive and had an eclectic menu not suitable for kids/teenagers.

"Stay somewhere else lse"

1
17/07/2016

Badly run down hotel. Rooms are dated with broken mismatched furniture. Bathroom was dirty, with water damage and possibly mold. Rags are dirty and have not been cleaned in a long time. Management is rude and apparently never heard the word customer service. The hotel does not deserve a three star rating, one at best. Stay somewhere better like motel six.

Anthony I, General Manager at BEST WESTERN PLUS Encina Inn & Suites, responded to this review
Good afternoon gsmith627, Thank you for taking the time to provide your comments. It is unusual for me to read that a guest has been so dissatisfied with their stay as well as with our staff. Thank you again for taking the time to provide your feedback. Kind regards, Anthony I.

This room was great! It was clean, modern, and very comfortable. The room was very light and airy and we appreciated that since Santa Barbara was hot that day! The queen bed and pillows were comfortable. We were so impressed with this hotel, we wished we could have stayed an extra day! The cost was comparable for the area, also.

Anthony I, General Manager at BEST WESTERN PLUS Encina Inn & Suites, responded to this review
Dear John L, We wish you could have stayed one more day as well. We look forward to welcoming you back during your next visit. Thank you for the kind feedback. I am so pleased to read that you enjoyed our Sleep EZ the “Encina Inn Special” double pillow top bed. They are great!! See you next time, Anthony I.

"Very comfortable and accommodating"

I was on a road trip with my family, and booked the hotel via Priceline when we were leaving our prior stop. I made an error booking a single bed (for 2 adults, 2 kids), and didn't realize my mistake until I arrived in the lobby. The manager was very accommodating even thought it was my mistake, and arranged for us to move to a 2 bed room. It was a nice stay, and we particularly enjoyed the bird atrium! Thanks!

"Good last minute option"

Suite was clean and pool was good. The restaurant is pricey and has "healthy" options such as whole wheat pancakes which are not terribly popular with kids. We arrived late and the night auditor went out of his way to help us get settled. The pool area is nice and our kids had a lovely time!

The grounds are beautiful, the entire staff is great, especially Helen, she always makes me smile and laugh, great front desk lady. The grounds are well landscaped and clean. Bathroom linens are great and plentiful Fresh fruit, candy always in the rooms along with real glasses and coffee cups. Restaurant on site.

We had an extended medical exam at Cottage Hospital and chose this convenient hotel. They accommodated us wth a discount due to the medical necessity of the visit. The room was clean and comfortable and they offered good coffee and fruit in the office, a mini frig and in-suite coffee maker and supplies. Our bed was comfy and we had several pillows. Our room was next door to the kitchen suite and I will never want that room again! Someone with a blender and a booming voice awoke very early each morning. The parking lot filled early and the only available spaces were on the street.

We spent 2 nights in Santa Barbra over the July 4th celebrations, we had a 2 bed suite and the hotel was very good , Staff were very attentive and professional , plenty room and near to Santa Barbra's State street, room had a fridge ,oven , hib and microwave with the necessary crockery, pots and pans , over all best of the 3 hotels we stayed in on our trip along PCH albeit with no free breakfast

We stay here a few times a year when we go to Sansum Clinic. The location is excellent. The property is excellent and the staff is outstanding. Good restaurants are a short drive away. It is walking distance to the clinic.

"Comfortable, quiet, very good value"

03/07/2016

We needed a room for one night in Santa Barbara and didn't want to pay an exorbitant sum to be a half block from the beach, nor did we want to stay in something too low-end. This Best Western fit the bill, is a couple of miles from the wharf in a nice quiet neighborhood at a very reasonable price for the area. The room was clean, comfortable, and spacious - note we actually got a free upgrade to a larger room because of someone else wanting to stay longer. Parking in their lot wasn't visible from the street (good :-). Our room had a kitchenette which was very handy as well. Didn't have a chance to try the restaurant but I believe we'll be back.

"Loved it!!!"

02/07/2016

I was not expecting to be so happy with this hotel, but we were very impressed! We were upstairs above the restaurant overlooking the pool and the room was very spacious, clean, very comfortable, light and welcoming. The complimentary fruit and cookies were a lovely touch. This hotel is not stingy but very kind and friendly. The photo of the spa didn't look overly inviting however we loved it and the photo didn't do it justice. Happy hour had some very affordable nibbles that my family and I shared. We spend afternoons by the pool with the children. It was very relaxing. Thankyou for our wonderful stay??

Our room was in the main building (same as lobby). A little on the small side but comfortable for one night. Bathroom was well supplied with new towels and little bath goodies. Coffee maker, candies, fresh fruit and cookies in room. Coupons for free wine and coffee with a meal purchase. I only used the coffee coupon. Coffee also available in lobby. Excellent breakfast with diverse choice of meals. Mine included sauteed kale, spinach and mushrooms. Very good. I did not use the bar but they seemed to have a nice selection of taps (micro-brews!). Sleep quality could have been better, not so much the hotels fault. Some knucklehead decided to idle his diesel pickup truck right outside my room at 5:00 am. I'll return.

24/06/2016

Stayed at the Best Western Encina Inn for 3 nights and after I checked out and was on my way, realized I left some jewelry in my room. Immediately called and spoke with the manager, Anthony. He personally went up to my room, found the jewelry and kept it in the office safe to which he is the only one who has the code. he was amazing and a life saver. He has followed up since then, letting me know they have been held safely until I was able to come picked them up. I can't thank him and his staff enough for their honesty and professionalism. Should I find myself back in the Santa Barbara again, the Best Western is where I will stay. Thank you Anthony.

21/06/2016

I was pleasantly surprised by the size of the suite we had for the price. The rooms were comfortable and quite. I was not expecting a full kitchen! I wished they had the free breakfast option. The restaurant was nice, but pricey and service was a little slow.

ChivaunC, General Manager at BEST WESTERN PLUS Encina Inn & Suites, responded to this review
Dear Marianna M, Thank you for taking the time to post your review. I am pleased to hear that one of our suites was accommodating for you. Our hotel features many varieties of suite combinations, most of which feature a full kitchen. These options are great for families traveling or longer stays. The on-site restaurant offers a variety of unique options. Thank you for your comment about the service, I am happy to pass this along to the restaurant owner. If you find your travels bring you to the Santa Barbara area I extend a personal invitation to return as our guest. Cheers, Anthony.

"Loud Neighborhood"

21/06/2016

Stayed there two nights. Woken up both days at 7AM by the caretaker of the adjacent facility running a leaf blower (7AM!!). Won't stay there again based on this simple fact. I can't imagine this is the first time this issue has come up. Why wouldn't the owner of this BW property negotiate with the facility to control unreasonable early morning noise??

ChivaunC, General Manager at BEST WESTERN PLUS Encina Inn & Suites, responded to this review
Dear Reuben V, Thank you for taking the time to post your comments. It must have been very frustrating to be woken up by loud noises coming from our neighbors. If you encounter a situation like this in the future I would encourage you to contact the front desk for assistance. I apologize that you had this experience and I will be sure to be aware of future leaf blowing at 7:00AM. Thank you for choosing to stay with us during your recent trip to Santa Barbara. Sincerely, Anthony.

It's a short drive to the beach, but with a great restaurant, a nice pool, weight room and hot tub, you really never need to leave. Great place to relax! Also the weather in Santa Barbara was perfect. What a great town to visit, and this Best Western was a very nice place to stay.

"Good for families "

20/06/2016

The 2bedroom single floor suites are safer for young kids than the 2 bedroom townhomes with steep stairs, although the town home has a larger single bed bedroom with a king, whereas all the beds in the single floor suite are doubles. We still went with the single floor because of the steep stairs dye to having a stroller. One of the only places to get a 2 bedroom for a big family. Cute aviary and pool area. Not a five star resort by any means, but totally adequate for what we needed. The carpets seem a bit dated, so I felt the need to keep my shoes on an not let my kids lie on the floor, but it wasn't necessarily "dirty". Convenient to have a little apartment with dishes microwave and fridge. They do provide dish washing liquid. Live oak restaurant on property serves breakfast until noon (pretty good but not cheap) and check out is at noon. Overall nice stay!

"Average but Expensive"

3
19/06/2016

This hotel has a nice location but the product is from the 80s and the pricing is way above the quality of the product. On top of that it provides no breakfast and to get coffee you have to purchase breakfast. That's just ridiculous for a property that charges over $200 per night.

"Wife needed to be close during my surgery "

4
18/06/2016

This hotel is one block from Cottage Hospital in Santa Barbara and has an association with that hospital as a place for friends and family to stay when wanting to be close by a patient. I was that patient. Hotel didn't look like anything special but we took a chance and we are glad we did. On the morning of my surgery, the patient ahead of me having his surgery developed into a problem surgery. They had to reschedule my surgery for two days later after my waiting 6 hours in pre-op. Went to the hotel to see what could be done. Standard policy is a cancelation fee. After telling the Manager about what happened, he changed my wife's reservation for two days later in about 45 seconds, no charge. My wife said her room was great, the staff was wonderful and the hotel restaurant was quite good. Their hospital discount on the room was better than we could do on our own. They had full facilities and we appreciate all they did. Highly recommend them for a place to stay.

"Decent place to stay for a few days"

15/06/2016

We stayed at this hotel for two nights just to visit Santa Barbara and surrounding areas after a funeral for a relative. We had room 490 and my brother had room 494, both are 1st floor rooms and 494 is a corner room with the side next to Los Olivos Street. The overall stay was alright. The room was clean, functional, though on the smaller side. Room 494 had a better layout but my sister-in-law said that she could hear people walking and talking on the street sidewalk very clearly. She also heard footsteps from the people above. We did not have that problem with our room 490 but I just don't know why there are so much mirror from floor to ceiling. Maybe it is to make the small room seem bigger? I don't mind the small room. If there was a big earthquake, the entire wall can come crashing down with cutting shards of glass all over the floor and we would be seriously cut when trying to run out of the room. Management, please take note when you do your next remodel of the rooms: Take out the glass!! The layout of the toilet/bathroom is accommodating toward people who go to the hospital nearby. They have Q-tips and cotton balls for wound cleaning. We stayed here because we wanted to walk to Mission Santa Barbara for their I Madonari painting event. It was a good six or seven blocks or so and make you hot and thirsty. Afterwards, you can stop by McConnell's Ice Cream, which is a couple blocks from the hotel, for a scoop of their yummy ice cream. Check in and out of the hotel were done quickly and courteously. There is a restaurant on site for breakfast or dinner. The food there is decent. There are some good restaurants nearby if you look them up. Last time we were in SB, we stayed at Harbor View Inn which is right next to the pier and across from the beach. I would recommend it over Best Western if you don't mind spending double the price that is here. The restaurant at the TIP END of the pier (at the end of State Street) has very good food.

"Totally gratifying experience."

14/06/2016

Every aspect of our stay was a joy! Upon arrival, reception had our paper work ready so all we added was vehicle information. Our room was spacious and spotlessly clean, . as was the bathroom. Room service is available but we enjoyed the ambiance of the on the grounds restaurant. The menu was varied and creative. The restaurant could easily be a "downtown" destination of its own. All in all we whole heartedly recommend this hotel.

"Good price, good location"

11/06/2016

We stayed here for 2 nights while visiting Santa Barbara. On arrival we were concerned we had made a mistake choosing the location but we needn't have been. Yes, the hotel is too far out of town to walk to the beach but we had no trouble driving into town and parking - free all day beside the beach (may depend on what events are happening in town!) and also used the free trolley between State Street and the beach. This all made our stay a reasonable price. We had a very quiet second floor room in one of the blocks at the rear. Large room with all amenities, possibly a little dark but it didn't really matter to us. Wifi worked fine. As mentioned hotel is in a quiet residential area. The staff were polite and helpful - there is a small shop in the lobby. They don't provide breakfast but there is a restaurant next door you can use for breakfast and dinner - we chose not to, although the hotel provides vouchers for a very small discount equivalent to one cup of coffee at breakfast. We brought Danish pastries in town and used the provided coffee maker instead. Plenty of parking. The hotel is about five minutes drive from the Mission, which is worth a visit. Very pleased with our stay and would be happy to stay again.

"Great Hotel"

This hotel is a great place to stay. The staff is amazing an the overall experience was great. The grounds are very pretty. The finches in the aviary are a really neat feature to this location. The facility is huge and has every type of room accommodation you could think of..... Regular rooms, suites, and even apartments.

"Best Best Western"

09/06/2016

This hotel is safe, well kept, relatively inexpensive for Santa Barbara. The staff are extra friendly and helpful. The property is very well managed. I have been coming to this hotel for 20 years and have yet to have a bad experience.

09/06/2016

nice peaceful place to stay, the room was clean and orderly, staff is friendly and helpful, the restaurant next door has a tasty selection of food, we stayed because if is close to Santa Barbara Cottage Hospital, we walked to the hospital

"Great stay for medical trips"

07/06/2016

Directly across the street from Sansum Clinic and Cottage Hospital, this is a safe environment, clean and pleasant rooms, with large screen televisions and a refrigerator. With a restaurant on the property including room service, its the go to place for persons wanting to be at the heart of things in Santa Barbara. Just streets away from State Street and all things Santa Barbara dining, it's definitely the place to be.

"Clean and close to downtown."

31/05/2016

We reserved this place last minute for Memorial day weekend and I had a fear that we would show up and it wouldn't be nice enough. As soon as I drove up, I was pleasantly surprised. It looked great and was in quiet little neighborhood. The room was clean and big. They even had a bar/restaurant downstairs. I would recommend this hotel and would stay there again.

"Sweet digs for family and friends"

Sweet digs, accommodating staff, great for the family, couples and larger groups. Walking distance to some great diner and eateries for those seeking out a true American style experience. Short trip to some amazing, rugged and picturesque coastline.

"Get a First Floor Suite"

4
23/05/2016

We got a first floor suite and stayed here for two nights with two small children. It was great being able to walk right out the sliding door and let the kids swim in the pool. The suite is definitely on the small side but it worked ok for a baby and a 3 yr old. The kitchen is too small to do any real cooking but we made breakfast and ordered in dinner. We ordered Pizza one night and take-out from the restaurant at the hotel the other night which is very convenient although not as reasonably priced. We had a good experience. The room is not aesthetically modern but that doesn't bother us. It has two nice TVs although the one in the bedroom in our room is placed in a tough angle to view from the bed. The key really is the sliding glass door out to the pool area. I wished we had stayed an extra day just to hang out at the pool. So to sum up, good service, convenient to restaurants etc especially only a few blocks from Mcconnells's Ice Cream. Not fancy but a nice setup if you can get a first floor suite on the pool. We enjoyed it.

"I like this hotel a lot"

21/05/2016

This is an unusual property in that they have about half a dozen different buildings, each with a different kind of accommodation and a different level of updating. Some rooms are excellent, some are just OK. All are very clean and the beds comfortable. The staff is, for the most part, very professional and helpful. The grounds are nicely landscaped, but not lush. A very convenient location for medical visits. I plan to stay there again whenever I am in the area.

Helen B, Front Office Manager at BEST WESTERN PLUS Encina Inn & Suites, responded to this review
Thank you very much for your nice review. We always appreciate hearing from our guests and we look forward to seeing you on your next visit to Santa Barbara.

I am doing some work for Cottage Hospital in Santa Barbara and this hotel is perfect walking distance. The rooms are always clean and bed is one of me most comfortable for a hotel I have ever had. The staff is very helpful and always cheerful.

"A hidden gem!"

19/05/2016

One block from Cottage Hospital in Santa Barbara. No, not a high profile location like Cabrillo Blvd or State Street. Very convenient location if you have business with Cottage Hospital, Sansum Clinic or a myriad of physicians. It's an older property and one of the cleanest properties of have ever stayed at. The grounds are immaculate the rooms are sparkling clean. The staff was friendly and very accommodating. Checking in they noticed it was going to be my birthday in a couple of weeks and I was presented with a nice bottle of Pinot from a Santa Barbara winery. We had dinner in their restaurant that night and it was fantastic! We had the Chicken Piccata and it was perhaps the best we have ever had. A hotel restaurant! Incredible! We were able to get a special rate as my wife was going to have surgery in the hospital the next day. They have an aviary next to the restaurant filled with Finches and they are so fun to watch. They have a nice pool area to relax in. Surgery went well and my wife is recovering. I would highly recommend this special property.

Helen B, Front Office Manager at BEST WESTERN PLUS Encina Inn & Suites, responded to this review
We are happy to hear that your wife is doing well and that you enjoyed your early Birthday present. Thank you for such a wonderful review of our property. Our Housekeeping staff are the best and they will be happy to hear you noticed their hard work. The Chicken Piccata at the Live Oak Cafe is delicious and we will pass along your comments to them. We hope to see you on your next visit to Santa Barbara and wish your wife a speedy recovery.

"Beautiful property and well-run hotel"

18/05/2016

We stayed at this hotel for a week and enjoyed it very much. The gardens are lovely and well-maintained and the room was well-furnished and a delight to be in. There is a full-service restaurant on the property and the front-office staff are pleasant and helpful. I appreciated having a computer and printer available in the office for use by guests, especially when it came to to print-out our boarding passes for the trip home. A sign of the welcoming nature of this establishment is the beautiful aviary housing a large number of happy and colorful finches in front of the restaurant. The only drawback was that the hotel was not as close to downtown as we had hoped - so we needed to drive instead of walk to most of the places we wanted to see.

"“Beautiful, charming, clean and friendly”"

The staff is extremely nice and helpful when asked. Hotel provides a shuttle to Amtrak station. Walking distance to the State street. The room 245 (2 queen beds) was extremely clean and well appointed.

"My go-to Santa Barbara hotel"

5
14/05/2016

It's quiet, reasonably priced, and always clean and comfortable. I've stayed here quite a few times. They also have larger rooms with kitchens, but when I'm traveling alone on business a regular room is fine. I like to stay off of the De la Vina side (which is the very back of the hotel) because of street noise, but most of the hotel overlooks the central pool area and I've never had a problem with pool noise. The hotel is a block from the hospital and I think most of the guests are business travelers and possibly hospital-related. I don't see a lot of families or younger adults so, again, it's usually quiet and peaceful. The on-site restaurant is convenient, but pricey and the food is never bad but often isn't great either. It's better to go downtown for food and drinks, or the hospital has a café that is supposed to be very good.

"Wonderful hotel, restaurant and staff!"

5
11/05/2016

Several of us spent over a week at this hotel as a family member was in nearby Cottage Hospital. I can't imagine a more perfect place to stay long-term during a stressful time like this. (I travel a lot, and most hotels, even luxury hotels, would grow old very quickly.....this one did not, in any way.) It's an older hotel/motel, but renovated so that everything you need is in the room (on a par with a luxury hotel). Very comfortable. The restaurant was unbelievably good, for breakfast, lunch and dinner. We went back repeatedly, not just for the convenience but because the food was exceptional. The staff were exceptional, flexible and understanding of guests who are there for the reasons we were. (There's also a hospital discount if you are staying at the hotel to visit someone at Cottage). The aviary, pool and hot tub also provide a welcome escape (and "therapy"). The walls are thin and I'm a light sleeper but I never had a problem with noisy neighbors at night (my daughter did, one night). A small price to pay for an otherwise perfect experience. We are grateful for this hotel, restaurant and staff and will stay there again in the future, whether hospital-related or not!

"Comfortable & convenient"

09/05/2016

Staff is great, location & convenience is of great value. Restaurant food & prices have greatly improved since past years. Older hotel, but it is quaint. Would be even better experience if all rooms had a microwave oven for use. Only kitchenettes have more than a small refrigerator.

30/04/2016

On our roadtrip from L.A. to San Francisco my wife and I decided to stay for two nights in Santa Barbara. After three overwhelming days in glamorous Las Vegas we were happy to calm down and find time for relaxing. After a long travel of about six hours we arrived at 8 p.m. in Santa Barbara and tried to find a hotel spontaneously... an interesting search began and we had to learn that even in the evening some hotels offer regular prices instead of offerign a good deal to ensure that their rooms are booked out. Finally after deciding to leave the coast line (one motel offered USD 300 per night!), we found the Best Western Encina and got a good deal from a very friendly staff member. Finally we paid USD 370 incl. taxes for two nights and enjoyed two relaxing days. Beside to the fact that Santa Barbara is a cute place with a nice shopping street, a historic pier and a huge marina, we also learned about the culture and history of this town. Back to the hotel: charming room with a (small) bath room but very comfortable bed. The BW Encina offers a self laundry and drying service which allowed us to wash some clothes after one week roadtrip. We had a very tasty breakfast and dinner in their restaurant and both, at reception and at restaurant, staff is very friendly. When we checked out, the reception gave us some advices for our upcoming route towards San Francisco and we left Santa Barbara smiling. Thank you for a nice stay, even if the pricing is not the cheapest, the overall impression of Santa Barbara and its Best Western was good!

"Relaxing hotel "

28/04/2016

My wife and I went to Santa Barbara for a night we normally don't like a hotel when the door exits to the outside but this hotel is in a very nice and safe area it's close to the downtown area and easy drive to anything in Santa Barbara the staff couldn't be any nicer the rooms are very clean and relaxing most have a private balcony this is the quietest hotel I've ever stayed in it was sold out for the night we we're there and didn't here anything and we had the balcony door open this is a great place stay. It also had a dvd player in the room very nice touch.

"Clean comfortable room"

27/04/2016

I stayed one night at this Santa Barbara hotel. My room was large, comfortable and very clean. They do small things to make you more comfortable. There was a candy dish filled with hard candies on the desk, a bowl of fresh fruit and shortbread cookies near the coffee maker. My room even had a recliner and a rocking chair to relax in. The grounds of the hotel are also very well maintained and the onsite restaurant served a delicious breakfast (not included with room.) I have to say that the décor in my room was a bit out of date. The wallpaper reminded me of the 1970's but everything was clean in and in perfect working order.

"Cleanest hotel I've ever stayed in!"

27/04/2016

Beautiful "motel" style hotel. Older but extremely well maintained and CLEAN. Rooms are generous size. Restaurant and bar on site. Pool area and gift shop. Very quiet and away from the busy downtown area. We walked to the ocean (2.5 miles each way). Uber rides are available if you don't have a car. Also there is a hotel shuttle. Staff is very helpful and pleasant.

"Conveniently located for Cottage Hospital"

If you are visiting a friend or relative at Cottage Hospital, this is a great location. It is very clean and nice little hotel. It features a restaurant on the property and the food was excellent. We have additional family coming to visit and they will all be staying at this nice little hotel

"We stay here every year - very convenient"

26/04/2016

I stay at the hotel almost every year when I visit Santa Barbara. The rooms are clean and well-kept. Many rooms look out onto the pool, but if you don't like that there are plenty of rooms that don't. There's a hot tub/Jacuzzi, laundromat and restaurant on site. Hotel also has a couple of townhouses that are great to stay in if you're traveling with family. Location is good. There are two really good breakfast places and a great ice cream shoppe within walking distance. A drive of less than one mile puts you on route 101. Parking was adequate and free... I've never had a problem finding a space.

"Great place in quiet location"

Lovely small hotel in a residential location within easy driving distance of all local amenities and tourist attractions. Very friendly and helpful staff. Breakfast is served in on site restaurant which also serves a good choice of evening meals. Would stay again if lucky enough to be in the area.

25/04/2016

Stayed here from 4/22/2016 to 4/24/2016. We stayed in a suite with 2 rooms, bathroom, kitchen, and living room. Rooms and bathroom were clean as well as the kitchen. Pots, pans, utencils, stove, microwave are all included. A/C was available in all rooms and the free wifi was pretty strong. Lots of channels were available on the TV. If you want to save money, ralphs grocery store is nearby. 20 minute walk, 5 minute drive. There are some restuarants nearby ralphs and a cheap gas station. There is a pool, hottub, gym and laundry facility. Its pretty small and basic. Nothing exciting. Parking is free. Fortunately, it wasnt crowded mid april. I thought the staff at the front desk were all hospitable and catering. I would say the biggest PROs were -Location: close to 101, safe area, grocery store, State street -Affordable: This place looks outdated but for the price, you cannot beat what is offered.

"Clean, Quiet, and Comforable"

24/04/2016

The Hotel has gone without any updates since the 1950's. But, they did maintain the interior and exterior, without disturbing the consistant theme. Pros: Very clean. No loose tiles. Drawers, doors, and cabinets in good working order. Fully stocked Kitchen. Up todate LED TV's and cable services. Excellant coffee selection down at the office. Landscaping and walkways are well maintained. Seated deep in the local neighborhood, you would have never guessed it was even there without our faithful GPS. Cons: Very Small bathroom, especially for a suite. Signs of rot at the base of the vaniety. Economy toilet seat. Louvered windows whistle with gusty winds. Crowded walkway, a seriously trip hazard, with the tables and chairs lining the way to the stairwell. (I stumbled into them every time, almost sent a chair through the window.) The Resturant was as expected. Terrible. Desserts sit out all day (I can't believe they nuked the bread pudding.) Sandwiches were very dry. High speed wifi was very slow. Awkward parking at best. No free complementry breakfast.

Very cute little place. 2 levels in kind of a U shape. No elevator so if you are second story you have to carry suitcase up but it is quiter up there. Restaurant on site with good food. Free parking. Free coffee in lobby. No bathtub was disappointing but not unusual in California. About 10 minutes straight down to the beach. For the price in Santa Barbara would definitely stay again.

Had a wonderful visit in Santa Barbara with family. The hotel had a suite with 2 bedrooms upstairs and a living room and kitchen down stairs with a patio... perfect for a family or goup of friends...very reasonable. We will definately stay there again!!

This property blew me away. The staff were all very nice and professional. I appreciate how they take pride in making your stay a memorable one. I knew I was going to have a peaceful night of rest when I walked into the room and the aroma was so fresh and fragrant. The room was immaculate and everything worked and was in great condition. The amenities are everything you want while away from home. The location of this property is close to EVERYTHING! The cost was nothing compared to the value you get. This property made me sign up for the rewards program! Treat yourself to this gem of a property, you will not be disappointed.

I come to SANSUM Clinic & I can relax in my room when I'm done for the day. I do not have to drive any where. I can even go to my bank. I have my laptop & tablets, comfortable bed, nice thick towel & robe. It's wonderful to relax.

This garden lodge was clean, quiet, comfortable and lovely, with one of the best restaurants I have ever eaten at anywhere (and we live in a destination spot with many fine hotels and eateries). Located midtown, the hotel is just minutes from the historic downtown, the old Mission Santa Barbara, golf courses, parks, beaches, wineries, and many other local attractions. The Encina offers the amenities of a small Old World style boutique hotel with the charm of a bed and breakfast inn, with private patio or balcony rooms and apartments, room service, a fabulous cafe and restaurant, a small garden pool, massage, and many other amenities. The ambience is the common Spanish colonial theme in the area, and the entire hotel is bursting with flowers in the many garden areas, and even growing along with the railings. The entire reservation, arrival, and check-in process went smoothly from start to finish, with their polite, helpful, well-trained and customer service oriented staff doing everything they could to assist, from the free shuttle (from the train station or airport) to being driven by the shuttle driver to our room. Our room, although a bit dated (they are in the process of updating and refreshing all rooms), was clean, quiet, comfortable and spacious. The adjoining Live Oak Cafe features breakfast, lunch and dinner, with room service available, and fantastic meals and ingredients. The orange juice is literally fresh pressed on the premises daily, from the best oranges I've ever tasted anywhere. Their coffee is fantastic as is the food, which tends to be healthy choice oriented (although with tasty offerings like “maple espresso” and “Pacific Rim” bacon bacon that is prepared on the premises), for the most part using organic and fair trade certified ingredients to produce the freshest, tastiest, and best-prepared meals I have ever had anywhere - which for me includes 30 countries and all 50 states. There is a large and charming aviary adjacent to the restaurant and pool with a thriving population of finches of various kinds, which began years ago with the pet of the young son of the owner, and grew with additions and “donations” over the years. The aviary encloses a magnolia tree, and includes nesting boxes, many of them constructed from gourds and coconut shells, as well as fresh food and fruit daily, and fresh water from a stone waterfall in the enclosure. It was great fun to sit at the window adjacent to the aviary and watch the antics of these tiny feathered acrobats while enjoying some of the best food available. Taken on the whole, it was a great experience, and if we are ever in the area again, we will be staying at the Encina!

I'm having a hard time writing this review but I feel that I owe it to the tripadvisor community and since I relay 100% on this website when I book hotels. Do not know where to start but I will just do it. First, I called the front desk at about 8:30pm to ask for the hours of the swimming pool and the hot tub and I found myself on the receiving end of someone who apparently hates his job and does not want to be there working @8:30 Incredibly unprofessional and very rude....shocking. Second, they still have smoking rooms and one of them was next to us. The air-conditioning units are located in the front of the room and brought all the smoke to the inside of room....terrible. Third, the rooms have not been updated since the 80's and the carpet smells so bad. Fourth, location is terrible compared to other hotels. Fifth, the room rate was as high as $267.00 per night....that is the rate of the Hyatt on the beach or another hotel in Santa Barbara that has better location, rooms and service for SURE. I wish that someone else had wrote this review before but oh well.

"Best Western Encina"

15/04/2016

I love the location and the treatment I receive when I stay at the Best Western Encina. I have been there several times before over the years and it is the only place I would stay in Santa Barbara. All the staff there are friendly and accommodating. I would recommend the Hotel to anyone.

"Another awesome trip to Santa Barbara"

15/04/2016

It is so convenient for us to stay at Encina due to medical tests etc. But it is a very fine hotel, nice staff, and we enjoy our stay. The room is always clean and good working condition. It is handy for us to park there and we can then just walk to Sansum Clinic or Cottage Hospital. There are several eating options walking distance from the hotel which also makes it handy and convenient. We have stayed here often and will continue to do so.

"Very Comfortable"

12/04/2016

The accommodations were perfect for my group and I. we stayed in the 2 bedroom suite which slept my party of 6. We dined in the on site restaurant, which I must say, the food was delicious. It was a comfortable stay with good customer service. I would definitely recommend this hotel to my friends and family.

"Encina Lodge & Suites, Santa Barbara, CA"

11/04/2016

I am an attorney in Los Angeles and have a number of cases in Santa Barbara. I usually go to Santa Barbara approximately once a month. The staff here make every effort to provide me with the type of service that I need. I am a smoker and finding a hotel/motel that accommodates smokers is difficult. The staff at Encina Lodge & Suites always make sure that I have a smoking room for all my stays. This is true even when rooms are limited. I would not stay at any other hotel/motel while in Santa Barbara, CA.

"Good for families"

I was traveling with my daughter to visit colleges over Spring Break. This hotel is located with easy access to, but not next to, the freeway, in a mostly residential area. It is not really walking distance to anything except SB Community College. It was about a 15 minute drive to UCSB. We stayed in room 329 which was in the back and pretty quiet. It was a good sized room with a comfortable bed, extra chairs, a refrigerator, closet, dresser, and desk. The property has lots of out-door lounging areas, e.g. court yards, grass and a pool area. There is an on site reasonably priced restaurant with good food and bar. We had dinner there for under $30. Service at the front desk was super friendly and helpful. (The waiter was a pill.) I would definitely stay here again.

"Great experience "

01/04/2016

Had a wonderful stay. Friendly and helpful staff, beautiful grounds, and a nice restaurant. We stayed for two nights. On the first night the people in the next room played loud music and were very noisy late into the night. One call to the front desk, and the noise ended.

"Outstandingly Convenient"

We were here just for an overnight stay prior to my wife's surgery at Cottage Hospital (they offer a 10% hospital stay discount). The were very accommodating with the room and location on their property to make it easy for my wife to get back and forth. The rooms are a little dated, seem like they have been partially refreshed recently, but the beds are comfortable, the room is spacious, and they are very well cleaned. They have a restaurant/cafe, pool, whirlpool, and aviary on site. Good 1-night stay.

This is my second visit to this hotel. My first visit was as a guest with family members attending a July '15 wedding in Summerland. I was so impressed by the premises/amenities I promised myself to come back. Just last week with time on my hands I decided to take a train from LA to visit one of my favorite cities, Santa Barbara!! I planned a 2 day stay and the BWP Encina Lodge was my "go-to" location. I couldn't have had a better experience. Thanks you guys!!

"A good Place to Stay"

15/03/2016

While this hotel is not fancy and is a bit of a walk from downtown, we still like it a lot. The rooms are spacious, have comfortable chairs (a real plus), everything is clean and well cared for and the staff is very helpful.

"So Nice!"

5
11/03/2016

This is a cute, well maintained property a block from Cottage Hospital. The rooms are sparkling clean and the staff is very accommodating to family visiting loved ones in the hospital. It would also be a great option for a vacation stop in Santa Barbara as long as you have a car to get to the local attractions. The garden and pool area is very pleasant and there is also a good restaurant on the premises. The restaurant is a vastly superior option to the food in the hospital cafeteria! Many thanks to the Encina staff for their kindness and flexibility during our stay.

"Convenient"

This Best Western was with in walking distance to the hospital while we were visiting a relative. They gave us a discount since we were staying to see someone at the hospital. The room was clean and well put together.

This will be our sixth year of staying at this property. We stay for 3 months in the winter in one of their one bedroom suites. Always feel like a member of the family and you can constantly say the service is their business. It is in a quite location and the beaches, mountains and neat downtown area are near by. They always are able to exceed or expectations, year after year.

"Encina Review"

28/02/2016

This property is very close to Cottage Hospital and the Sansum Medical Clinic. The staff is very much attuned to the fact that on many occasions people are going through a traumatic time. They have seen us, personally, through several rough patches and have bent over backwards to ensure we are looked after and whatever way it takes. They remember us and do not fail to ask after our health. They have always done their very best to accommodate our requests for particular rooms or suites. They have taken deliveries for us and have forwarded things to us. Carol Johnson has schooled her staff in what the word "service" means and they fulfill it to the nth degree.

"Cozy and comfortable with special touches."

25/02/2016

This was our third stay at this location. The room included fresh fruit, Lorna Doone cookies, bottled water and coffee. The restaurant "Live Oak Cafe" is on the property. The food was delicious and the service outstanding. Akio at the front desk recommended the chicken piccatta and it was excellent. The checkin staff was very friendly and accomodating. We are looking forward to another visit in the summer.

"Very attractive and quiet"

5
13/02/2016

In a largely residential area, so exceptionally quiet; nor was there noise from other guests. Very attractive and relaxing atmosphere. A 10 minute drive at most from downtown. Restaurant next door was quite nice. They also have an aviary with over 100 finches. Some guests ask for rooms near the aviary, but we couldn't hear the twittering from our room on the other side.

"Pleasant hotel stay!"

11/02/2016

I love this Best Western Plus hotel, because I know I will have a pleasant stay. To begin with, the hotel bed and pillows were inviting, allowing me to have a good nights sleep. After my peaceful sleep I enjoyed a nice breakfast from the on-site restaurant. Checking out was a breeze, allowing me to get to destination quickly. I feel all the staff are outstanding. I will definitely stay again.

We stayed in a two bedroom suite Friday and Saturday night and we were in love with the place!! It was a full on apartment and we just moved in for two nights! It was clean and quick service when we asked for extra towels. The location is perfect! A $5 uber ride to downtown and $6 uber ride to the beach. Can't beat that location! Would stay here again and definitely recommend!

"CLEAN & SAFE"

01/02/2016

Victor checked us in. He is just WONDERFUL! We were on our 18th anniversary. Victor went above & beyond to make our stay a grrreat one! He's a pro, polite, helpful, sweet, & kind! All the other staff we came in contact with were polite & nice as well. The whole place was very clean & we felt safe. Its a good location. Everything we wished to see & do wasn't far. Its an older place, but looks good. Towels, & wash cloths were clean - looked new & smelled FRESH! Bed was comfy. Bedding was 4star bedding. The TV in bedroom wasn't working. We didn't report it as my husband figured it out and fixed the cables that weren't connected correctly. I'm 100% sure that had we called about it not working - they would have sent someone to repair it pronto! The only con is the toilet water pressure was weak & slow. Made sure to not place to much toilet paper in it at one time in fear that it way not flush correctly. Its an older building & some such things are to be expected. Wasn't a problem. We ate at the restraint for breakfast. Its has a wonderful staff & beautiful covered patio. HOWEVER - never ate there again on the 2cd day. The coffee & service is great BUTTTT ----- the food wasn't!!! It was very strange --- I had an omelet with BROKEN UP BLACK BURNT BEACON in it. It was the WORST I've ever seen or tasted. My husband had a different dish with beacon as well. It was beacon slices cut in half & BLACK BURNT TO A CRISP! NOT A GOOD CRISP! My husband checked the bill as it appeared a tad on the high side. They charge you $3.00 for your toast! We've never seen that prior. Toast usually comes with your order. HUMMMMMM???????? We feel a NEW COOK is much needed. Pool & spa was very clean! For an older property it is well maintained & pretty! Over all its a GREAT place to stay & we will stay there again.

"I LOVE this place!"

This is my hideaway, where I can go, be treated well, and be comfortable. So much so that I never really want to leave when it's time to go home! I always book my next stay as I am leaving. I really am looking forward to my next stay at this property!

"Excellent"

16/01/2016

I have stayed here for the past six nights and have nothing but good things to say about the hotel. I was extremely lucky to be upgraded to a one bed apartment with patio overlooking the pool. There was a kitchen but I had no need for this. The room was cleaned daily to a high standard. The room looked dated but it wasn't , this was the intention . The bed was extremely comfortable and wherever I went the wi-Fi was excellent. Each day I went to reception where there is coffee and always found the front desk team to be very friendly. I ate at the onsite restaurant on three occasions and found the food to be fine and the prices ok. I would have no hesitation in recommending this hotel. Thank you for a lovely stay.

"Totally exceeded standards!"

5
16/01/2016

Sometimes BWs can be iffy, this one however exceeded all expectations and we would absolutely return without hesitation. The Live Oak restaurant and bar on site is delish! They were incredibly prompt when I asked someone to come check out the TV.. Turns out, we were the numb nuts using the wrong remote. The room is good size and spacious and we even have our own little balcony. It's in good proximity to just about everything... Sterns Wharf and all the good pubs and shopping on State Street. Staff was excellent on all fronts and would totally recommend this is place to anyone.

"Convenient Location in Expensive Santa Barbara"

4
08/01/2016

This Best Western was in a good location for us, as we attended a wedding nearby and wanted to be close. It is also close to the Cottage Hospital. Quite easy to find and plenty of free parking! Quite expensive for a Best Western, but in Santa Barbara, I guess that is what you get. We were able to check in at 3:00 PM which was a plus. We had a room in the back on the 2nd floor with a little balcony, which was nice although the weather was not too good. Nice large bathroom with plenty of counter space ! We did take advantage of the pool. There is also a nice-looking restaurant off the pool, but we didn't get the opportunity to try it out due to the wedding. The hotel reminds me of a lot of the older style California motels. The room was quiet and the A/C unit was perfect. About the only slight downer was the reception staff - somewhat abrupt, not friendly, nor helpful. Perhaps they were rushed and had bad days. All in all a good hotel and good location.

"Very comfortable stay for a family "

5
30/12/2015

We recently stayed here with with my entire family. There were five of us in one room. It was very spacious with fairly high ceilings. The room had 2 beds and a pullout couch. The room was very clean and off the road so it was very quite, it also had a nice balcony. The only downside to the room was the bathroom only had one sink. We were there just short of a week and it worked perfect for us, our other family stayed here as well and they had no complaints. Its a short drive to the beach and downtown. Its obviously not in the heart of downtown, but its much more peaceful then downtown having stayed at several of the hotels in the city center. The staff was incredibly friendly and helpful. After leaving some items behind, Helen was very helpful in ensuring they were returned to us. The free wifi was also very good and we had no problems connecting. We would certainly stay here again and not hesitate to recommend this to our family and friends. The Encina Lodge is a great value for the price, accommodations and location

"Best Hotel Ever"

5
29/12/2015

My husband and I had a wedding to attend in Santa Barbara, CA. and wanted to spend the night so we didn't have to drive anywhere. We often stay in Best Westerns and this one is fantastic. Everyone was happy, gave great service and went out of their way to help us. Everything was clean and spotless. The pool was heated and large. The hotel is in a quiet location and the restaurant is excellent and reasonably priced. Bar is cozy. Check-In at 3pm and Check-Out at 12 noon, a plus these days. Everything is styled in 2 story buildings. Finch cage outside restaurant is fun to watch. We will return here to relax. The best!

"One night stay, not two"

29/12/2015

The staff was friendly, but the PLUS is not there. Our rooms looked outdated, the carpet is not the usual hotel carpet, but a household carpet; the AC units is noisy. Neighborhood is not close to the main Santa Barbara scene, so we had to drive to get groceries, breakfast, etc.

Carol W, General Manager at BEST WESTERN PLUS Encina Lodge & Suites, responded to this review
I'm sorry you were not completely happy with your recent visit with us. We are constantly updating our rooms to make them more comfortable for our guests; and do hope you will come stay again to sample one of those renovated guest rooms. Thank you for writing your review; we appreciate all your comments.

We are travelling with our parents and stayed at the 2-bedroom townhouse. Living room and the kitchen are downstairs and two bedrooms are upstairs. The kitchen has some pots and dishes. Living room and one of the bedroom have a TV. Quite spacious for our purpose. And location is good.

"Close to Sansum Clinic"

5
04/12/2015

A clean, comfortable place to stay when visiting Sansum Clinic - which is right across the street. Our room had a great view too. Easy walking to good restaurants but there is an excellent restaurant on site as well. Nice staff. Well maintained.

We sure do appreciate your wonderful review of your recent visit with us here in Santa Barbara……….and happy you enjoyed our new restaurant. Come back and see us again; maybe for a vacation next time.

"Comfy and cozy place to spend the night before surgery. Like the guest room at Grandma's house."

4
03/12/2015

Very convenient for procedures at Cottage Hospital, which is a block away. This is an old hotel that has done a very good job of preserving the positive aspects of ambiance and hominess while still keeping it in good repair and up to date. It doesn't try to be something it isn't. It just provides a pleasant, clean and cute place to stay in the heart of Santa Barbara.

"Large comfortable rooms, nice amenities, good customer service"

5
30/11/2015

Stayed here twice, both times it was great. While it's not super up to date, it was in very good shape. (So if you're all about the design, you might have a problem with it, but that's *your* problem). The room that we had was huge with a high ceiling, and had two actual comfortable living room-style upholstered chairs (recliner and regular) so you could kick back and relax. Bed, bedding, towels, toiletries all on the higher quality side. Fridge and coffeemaker worked fine. Maybe a microwave would be nice, but didn't really miss it. The absolute best part about this place is they were very flexible about later checkout times and options. So many hotels are really obnoxious sticklers about this, but each time here the staff has been accommodating. Not everyone in the world is on a freaking get up at 8am schedule, so it's a relief to find a hotel that will work with night-owls.

Carol W, General Manager at BEST WESTERN PLUS Encina Lodge & Suites, responded to this review
Your review has just made my day; thank you so much for all your nice comments. We appreciate knowing that our hard work makes our guests happy……….and that we were able to accommodate a late check out for you. We all hope you will make us your Santa Barbara destination when traveling to this area.

"The little things count!"

5
30/11/2015

I stay in hotels more than a third of the year for business, and I've stayed in dives and six-star hotels. This hotel has some of those nice things that I've not seen even in the very-high end hotels. Small things, but still nice to have - like a toothbrush holder in the bathroom and a second suitcase rack in the room. If they care enough to pay attention to the small things, then they pay attention to the big things.

"Rooms"

29/11/2015

Nice location, very quite. The staff goes out of there way to be helpful .Restaurant & bar was better than most. Up stair room was nice with a balcony. Rooms could of been a little large. Lots of T.V. channels to pick from -- For the price, in the Santa Barbara fair price.

"Nice place, but older"

4
25/11/2015

We decided to stay here for one night on our way to San Diego. Did a lot of research and it came up pretty good. As mentioned in a lot of reviews it is an older motel but has been remodeled in some areas. The bathroom is fairly new, the room was spacious, the bed comfortable, wifi is good, and free. Our only downer is the air conditioning, it has not been upgraded and is rather noisy, so if that will bother you, look elseware. The restaurant associated with the motel is nice, nothing special but convenient for breakfast lunch and dinner. The motel is not walking distance from the State Street shops and restaurants.

"A very pleasant stay"

23/11/2015

Stayed here for one night and realized what a gem we had found. The rooms were clean and spacious. Staff were all very courteous and extremely helpful. We had an excellent breakfast in the morning and location wise very central to all activities.

"Broken AC"

1
22/11/2015

I'm giving this place 1 star for not anticipating possible issues, such as broken AC, that may happen during the stay of their guests. The room that they gave us has a broken AC. The maintenance crew were very nice and they tried to fix it but unfortunately the unit needs to be replaced and there were no other units available. They offered another room but it's a smoking room. So we're left with two options, stay in a stuffy room or inhale the cigarette smell all night. We chose to stay in a room with a broken AC. The front desk offered a fan and suggested that we open our window. The reason why we stayed in a hotel instead of our friend's house down the street is to be comfortable and to enjoy the amenities of the hotel. Our stay was not comfortable at all and suggesting to open our window just made the situation even worst. This ruined my boyfriend's birthday weekend.

Carol W, General Manager at BEST WESTERN PLUS Encina Lodge & Suites, responded to this review
Thank you for writing to TripAdvisor about your visit with us this past week-end; I am sorry that you had the problems with the air-conditioning unit in your room. I had decided to call you personally this morning to apologize; so thank you also for talking with me. We will certainly get that air conditioner replaced as soon as possible. Looking forward to your visit again in January. Happy Thanksgiving!

15/11/2015

We travel to Santa Barbara several times a year to see family. This place was fabulous. Reasonable for Santa Barbara, great service, lovely place close to State St. and everything, and the little restaurant was FABULOUS. Darned if I didn't have the best eggs benedict ever. Not kidding. Ever. With arugala. And the nicest part was it was included with the hotel.

My husband and i have recently begun using Sansum Santa Barbara Clinic as our primary health care facility. AMAZING, but that's another story. Over the past two years we have stayed in lovely hotels and B and B's during the visits to the clinic that required overnight stays. For the first time i stayed at the Best Western Plus Encina Lodge and Suites and was very pleasantly surprised at the comfort, of this hotel. It is well worth the visit. I will be using this hotel again and have decided to make it my home away from home for my Santa Barbara visits. Great place.

We were impressed with the outstanding service, room quality and restaurant food. The single room was large, comfortable, new furnishings and noted attention to finer details. Very well maintained, good location and good value. Our friends shared a 2-bedroom suite with kitchen which made a great gathering spot on site. Make your reservation directly with the lodge for best of everything.

This surprising little hotel has a totally delightful staff and an equally delightful restaurant on the property. The rooms were very comfortable, views lovely, and the people could not have been nicer. They also cater to those who need an extended stay for medical treatment or surgery and would definitely be a nice option for that.

We just got back from the Best Western Plus Encina Lodge & Suites The rooms were neat & clean and all of the staff was, as always wonderful. 03/11/2015

This was the best hotel we stayed in out of the 8 on our trip. On arrival my partner commented another crummy motel, how wrong she was. The staff were great, the rooms fantastic, nice little touches like sweets and fruit in room, all very clean and pity only there one night. Hotel has all the facilities you need, including a great resturant where the staff could not do enough for you. We ended our evening sipping cocktails around the pool, a novelty for us brits not used to warm evenings and got a few stares lol. If only one downside, it's several miles to downtown so need a car. Would recomend.

"Great motel and great location"

We were very pleased with our visit to Santa Barbara and our stay at this motel. It was clean and convenient and had no motel complaints. There is a great restaurant just next door called the Live Oak that is a bit pricey but it is Santa Barbara after all so was to be expected. We only had breakfast there and for me, it was just okay but does offer very healthy options and their service is superb.

The hotel was lovely and the customer service was outstanding. Akio (the assistant mgr), Luis, and Saul made our stay very comfortable and enjoyable. We also briefly met Carol, the manager, and can see that her and Akio's great customer service sets the tone for all of the other amazing staff we encountered. We were always met with a warm smile and an inquiry of how they could be of service. Our week-long stay in Santa Barbara was primarily for medical treatment at the Sansum Clinic. The hotel discounted our room rate because of this and also provided complementary shuttle service to and from our appointments at the various Sansum Clinic locations. Our shuttle drivers, Luis and Saul had other responsibilities at the hotel (they were not just drivers), but always picked us in a timely manner and appeared happy to do so. We always tipped our driver even though it was not expected, because they truly earned it. We were so impressed with them and this shuttle service. The hotel and room were nice, clean, spacious, and quiet. The hotel is in a great location. We highly recommend this Best Western!

Very nice older hotel. Room was very clean. Good lighting in the bathroom and good counter space. Full length mirrors were a plus. Separate toilet/shower with a door which is always good for more than one in the room. More than one suitcase rack which is also nice. Good location to the hospital and surgery center. The extra little amenities in the room were a pleasant surprise. There is also a restaurant on the premises which looked good although we were downtown in the evening so did not dine there. Coffee and tea available all day in the lobby. Overall this hotel was better than expected.

I would stay here, great staff who are friendly and location is great. They gave me a bottle of wine for my birthday and they were so friendly. The location is just one mile from shops and great service.

With my daughter at UCSB it seems I have tried everything from VRBO to El Capitan tents in the Santa Barbara area! This hotel was a pleasant surprise even though it is tucked away in a residential area a few miles from the beach. I love when hotels provide the little extras when you get to your room. My room had been upgraded to include a little kitchenette but the bonus was the apples, cookies and water provided at no charge. The room was spacious and the bathroom small but nicely arranged. My daughters especially appreciated the big screen TV! Well done Encina Lodge. Will definitely return my next journey to the area.

Excellent hotel. We needed to be close to the hospital and it was only a couple blocks away. We had no trouble upgrading from a room to a townhouse to accommodate my daughter's family. Restaurant was undergoing renovations and was closed but the staff set up a wonderful complimentary breakfast buffet on the patio area. Daily cleaning staff was efficient and friendly.

A decent hotel for our short stop in Santa Barbara – the room was quite small which made unpacking two suitcases a bit of challenge but the bed was comfy and the room clean. There was a really good shower which is always a good bonus. The hotel is a bit out of the way (30-35 min walk to downtown Santa Barbara). However you could drive there and back if you wanted. The onsite restaurant was nice and decently priced.

Stayed for just one night. Very clean and well equipped rooms. Lovely grounds (nice flowers growing) and a good pool. There is a good restaurant on site which does breakfast, lunch and dinner. We had lunch and it was very reasonably priced. Not really walking distance to the beach but there is a trolley which goes there.
