"Cute, quaint and quiet overnight location"

nurselou, Kingston 28/01/2023

We came back to stay here having got married here almost 15years ago. We were pleased to see many features remained and the grounds are still as gorgeous as ever. We stayed in the superior double and it was lovely. No complaints about the room, has certainly been refurbed over the years. The bathroom could do with an update, the shower spurted everywhere but was hot and powerful, what more do you need!! The service here was a just superb, faultless! The biggest hidden gem of this hotel is the food. Absolutely delicious, the breakfast and dinner was so good we ate there both nights. Yes the hotel is close the motorway but that's great for travel, you do not notice any motorway noise when you are inside. There was a bit of a bizarre smell in the corridors but this did not extend the the rooms so did not effect our stay that much. We'd certainly stay again and would recommend to anyone looking for a middle of the road hotel with a quaint and quiet pub/restaurant for a relaxing weekend away.

"Comfortable stay"

Anne C, Grantham, United Kingdom 13/01/2023

Very comfortable quiet family room. Some areas of hotel perhaps a bit ‘tired' but didn't impact on stay. Bar reasonably priced and lovely cosy areas. No meals taken though food smelled nice. Staff very friendly and helpful.

"Faulty towers"

MusicMan40, Rhondda, United Kingdom 07/11/2022

Positives: nice room and reception staff. Negatives:the bar and restaurant, just a calamity of errors from crying waitress to a moth in my drink. The food was ok but the service was just a joke, I was waiting for manwell to come service us. It could be so good but personally I think the management need to finish.

"A very poor Best Western"

Pet-sand, London, United Kingdom 03/08/2022

The room we had was very small and needed updating 5 years ago (tatty) The restaurant was poor with very high kitchen fan noise. We ate in the conservatory it was hot because of the time of year. The starter was very ordinary but the steak for the main course was very good. I got the impression that many of the dishes were bought in Hence the steak. All of the staff were very helpful and friendly. The best room was used for breakfast it is a delightful room had this been used as the dinning room we would have felt a little better about the place

"Convenient but quiet hotel"

Karen E, Berkhamsted, United Kingdom 06/07/2022

I stay here whenever I work in Bristol, but this time I got the Charlotte suite, totally unexpected. Beautiful room with trees by the window and it felt really rural, which I love. The food is fab and I had a great night's sleep

"Good value near Cotswolds, just be wary of checkout times"

highlanderfil, Ann Arbor, Michigan 06/07/2022

Overall, we're pleased with our stay at the BW Compass Inn. We enjoyed an excellent dinner in the courtyard, the location is perfect ahead of a morning drive through the Cotswolds AONB and I even managed to get an evening run snuck in among the fields and the bed was very comfortable. The only complaints I've got are around privacy in ground floor rooms and check-out times. Our room only had the heavy drapes and not the additional half-sheer curtains, so we were either left relying on interior lightning (which, it must be said, is very stellar, with recessed lights in the actual ceiling, which few hotels take the time to install) or risked exposing the entire content of our room to passers-by. And in the morning, we got a knock on the door and were rather sternly informed that we were past check-out, which is at 10 a.m.; having stayed at no fewer than a hundred hotels in Europe and the U.S. the past ten years or so, I can safely say this is NOT the industry standard. Other than that, the inn is good value and if our travels take us back to the area, we'll happily stay here again.

"More breakfast staff please"

User 24/06/2022

Front of house staff exceptionally friendly and helpful. Only one young lady serving 30-40 at breakfast consequently she couldn't cope with lots of waiting, lack of available items and orders forgotten. Not her fault. Overall, perfect for a friends reunion

"Quaint, comfortable and quiet hotel, but looking tired"

martinhH5865RD, Shrewsbury, United Kingdom 22/06/2022

The hotel and inn are places I've used many times over the last tewnty years for food while travelling or for accomodation if convenient. The staff are brilliant and the food on the whole is very good. Earlier breakfasts at weekends would be most beneficial, and something I have raised with the hotel. The rooms are clean, comfortable and filled with character, and to be staying on a route used by people for over two thousand years adds wonderful atmosphere. Visit the nearby Celtic and then adopted Roman hill-fort for an insight into ancient Britain.

"Uncomfortable bad night"

User 18/06/2022

Bed was rock hard, bedroom door rattled and banged all day & night. Toilet an inch from the wall meaning you had to sit sideways. Soap for bath/shower halfway up the wall so if you had a bath you would have to stand up each time you wanted a squirt of soap.

"The best Best Western"

User 31/05/2022

I had really bad experience with another Best Western before, so I was quite pleasantly surprised how clean and modern the Compass Inn turned out to be. I was walking the Cotswold Way (the hotel is one the route), and a comfortable room and a tasty meal were exactly what I need after a long walk.

"Stopover Hotel"

Lynn59fromRuncorn, Runcorn, United Kingdom 29/05/2022

Stayed here for one night before travelling on to a wedding. All of the staff we had contact with were so polite and friendly, it was lovely. Our room was basic, but everything worked and was clean and quiet. We had a meal in the restaurant which was excellent and reasonably priced. Breakfast was amazing, everything catered for and the young lady serving couldn't do enough for me and my family. Our grandchildren were fussed over by the staff and made to feel very special. Thanks to Haley on reception. I would definitely recommend this hotel.

User 17/05/2022

We had a lovely meal the night we arrived, the staff were friendly, attentive and efficient. We stayed the night with two young children—the room was perfect! The children loved exploring the beautiful garden. Breakfast is a must in the morning, it was really delicious. Thank you Compass in for being so accommodating.

"Best western compasses be Badminton"

User 09/05/2022

This was extremely disappointing fir the amount it cost us Soup cold and far too thick service slow considering no one else there! Room not very clean Duvets like rags pillows like cardboard Bathroom very tired and mugs not changed each day and teabags not replenished

"Friendly staff, terrible service/hotel maintance"

User 28/04/2022

The hotel was dated, a weird damp/mould smell lingered around certain areas. The food was below average, £20.00+ for steak, asked for medium and came over well done 2 times in a row. The young staff are friendly, although during lunch and dinner, extremely inattentive - occasionally waited 30/40 minutes before being served on a dull week day. I feel for a 3 star hotel the hotel provides dish choices of what I would expect in a 5* but exercuted like an all you can eat in a poorly reviewed hotel. Overall very poor, and for the price, I would prefer to stay elsewhere. (avg. breakfast and dinner including stay per night £120)

"Best of best western"

davecS1558XA, Folkestone, United Kingdom 23/04/2022

It so much at hotel never bothered venturing out, dinner was excellent plenty well presented food and even though I had dietary problems chef managed cook me a meal I could eat which was not on menu, the 2 young ladies looking after restaurant were super efficient again nothing too much trouble and very attentive. "Perfect Country Retreat"

User 04/04/2022

Perfect country retreat in perfect setting with local walks many attractions nearby , Close to beautiful Cotswold villages with Cheltenham further afield. Bath and Bristol on the doorstep for sightseeing and shopping.

"Fantastic Stay!!"

User 03/04/2022

Fantastic stay as a family, the food was amazing and the service was great. We have stayed other places for double the Cost and had no where near the service, this was a half way stop on our way to Cornwall and we will definitely return. Thank you for your kind service and excellent food.

"Partner and pet stay"

Christine F, King's Lynn, United Kingdom 18/03/2022

First time with taking our dog [8months] on holiday , the hotel was perfect for us all. The staff were very friendly and efficient. Great being able to have the puppy with us all the time. Food was lovely, hot and promptly served. An excellent experience.

User 23/02/2022

Hotel is very dated and there is a overwhelming smell of sewage and damp it's not pleasant there was no hot water for a shower I spent the evening relieving myself what I eat in the restaurant would not recommend a stay here

"From outside we were a little unsure, but had a lively stay."

User 01/11/2021

Had two double rooms, one executive (the orchard room) and a standard double. Both rooms were very recently reworked and were great. Could not fault either of them, only thing to improve would be if they out the heaters on before you arrive. We had a few ( well more than a few) drinks in bar area when we arrived early evening ( it is a bit of a warren of rooms) and then eat later. States 9m closing on website but actually last orders are 8pm, not an issue for us. Food was great and service from the friendly staff was very good. Certainly plenty of staff, so no long waits. Cheff also tailored my wife's meal, as she is a very picky veggie. Went to bar after eating and allthough a bit quite we had a great time and also all the staff made us feel welcome including the lovely lady owner. The lovely large family from Spain who started to sing in the Orangey were brilliant and made the evening. Breakfast was good, once we found the breakfast room. You do have to preorder the evening before. Could not fault our stay or food. When all rooms aee done this will be a great little hotel. Recommend the Orchard room and room 17. Thanks for making us feeling so welcome.

"Sunday lunch"

User 26/09/2021

We just had Sunday lunches . The 2 staff I met were lovely especially the waitress . I forgot her name but she was only 16 but very friendly and tried to help us as much as she could. Food was lovely . I ordered pork roast ( it was a bit fatty but some people like that I just cut it all off) my mum ordered beef which looked gorgeous. Vegetables and presentation great. The food was also a good size and not too pricey for a special Sunday lunch. I would return again. Car parking good , easy to get to. Recommend

"Shame on you Best Western"

dvc787, Warrington, United Kingdom 28/08/2021

Room, especially bathroom unclean. Ongoing building work intrusive . Poorly run with nobody appearing bothered Owner in denial on state of establishment, appears more interested in being in the bar of an evening rather than managing. Could go on but believe Best Western are not bothered in listening to feedback

"Compass Inn Business Stay"

markkininmont, Poole, United Kingdom 29/07/2021

Staff were very friendly, and the food was excellent. The hotel itself is in a very poor state of repair and the décor is extremely dated. The room for myself and my colleague were in a poor state of repair and very very dated. The main restaurant was leaking so much we chose to sit in the bar area. Given my previous experience with Best Western Holtes it's difficult to understand how on earth the Compass Inn meets the brand experience.

"Handy stop off in countryside just minutes off M4"

User 28/07/2021

Great stop off, stayed in a good sized clean family room with proper beds (not sofa/pull outs as in many places). On one of the hottest nights of the year it was a joy to have two windows wide open and still be quiet enough to sleep soundly. Staff very pleasant & attentive, we didn't eat here but did take drinks from the bar into the little beer garden. Decor wise room was a little dated, but had tea & coffee, wifi, tv etc and was a reasonable price. Covid wise felt very safe and comfortable.

"Not good...terrible"

cathm2020, United Kingdom 23/09/2020

Would never, ever stay here again, ever...ever, ever, ever. I will never get these 15 hours back and i resent them for their deception. Have a look at your photos Compass Inn and admit the rouse. Disgraceful.

"Perfect stop on cotswold way"

amjbath, Bath, UK. 12/09/2020

Our last night of 6 on the Cotswold Way and one of our favourites. Felt really clean, and was well equipped. Sitting outside with a drink in the evening sun was perfect, a highlight of our trip. Helpful staff and easy check in and out if you've prepaid.

"Lovely people, good food"

User 28/08/2020

Lovely people, good food, comfortable bed in a good sized room - a very nice place to stay at an economical rate. it is also within easy reach of some lovely places. And the breakfast was great too. Thank you.

"Long weekend break."

Don H, Wolverhampton, United Kingdom 26/08/2020

The hotel looks and is a little tired and would benefit from a good 'tidy up' both inside and out. Everywhere was clean and as Coronavirus is very much with us the hotel provides hand sanitiser at various public area locations including just outside the entrance door. Our room was dated but clean and a good size, it was warm in the room without any heating. The double bed was comfortable and a little too firm for my wife, we slept well. The soundproofing - if there is any? was poor and we could hear tv noise from a neighbouring room and every walking movement from the room above. The waitress at dinner expressed how busy she was but the service she provided was very good and we have no complaints at all. However, at breakfast on Saturday the 22nd of August as the same waitress was sering breakfast we seemed to wait a while and suddenly we could hear the chef ranting and shouting at the top of his voice and we could hear almost every word he bellowed including Fu**ing! Apparently there had been an issue with tickets not going through. That would be our only complaint during our stay. The staff were all very helpful and pleasant. Our dinner on our first night was excellent including the desserts. The area is beautiful and there are several places to visit locally, Bath I would say is a glorious place to spend a day and only a short drive from the Compass Inn. We had a thoroughly enjoyable stay and would happily recommend this hotel. Good staff, food and location.

"NIce Location"

UkPj, UK 09/08/2020

Nice location, staff friendly, but after waiting 40 mins had to ask what was going on, the place wasn't that busy, and it was lunchtime. There was 7 of us with a variety of food, but the delay was a bit frustrating. However, once it arrived the food was good.

"stunning little find"

Booadavies, Caerphilly, United Kingdom 28/07/2020

a beautiful place tucked away. The staff we very friendly and the place was very clean. The food wasof a very high quality and even with covid a lot of choice. a very warm welcome and easy check in and out. The room was lovely huge with sliding doors. The bathroom a little small.

"Nice place with friendly staff"

paul_thrupp, Birmingham, United Kingdom 20/03/2020

The location, hotel, food and service was excellent although there were a few issues with the electric lights in the bedroom. The reception tried to assist me and provided the first beer as a means of apology.

"Great overnight stay."

stevesG1856ZX, Lifton, United Kingdom 29/02/2020

Stopped for a night as a family of 5 after a long drive. After website said no suitable rooms rang the hotel and easily fixed. Even had one room upgraded to a honeymoon suite! Lush. Dinner was excellent and very efficiently served with friendly staff and a great breakfast. So easy to get to off the M4. Definitely stay there again.

"Business trip to Bristol"

iaino2017, Arillas, Greece 24/02/2020

I have used this hotel a couple of times now and it os good. Conveniantly located on the M4 so within easy striking distance of Bristol, Bath & Chippenam etc. The rooms are warm and comfortable and the food on offer is really good.

"Pleasantly surprised "

Honoured_accordingly, English Riviera, United Kingdom 17/02/2020

Having read the reviews we really were not too sure to expect, upon arrival (amid Dennis!) a warm welcome from Sarah & Penny, we accepted the very generous offer of DBB for one night. Our room was of a good size and included a bath! Very please with this! Ample coffee etc a Bluetooth system immediately paired, the bed so comfortable. Having booked dinner for 19:00 hrs we made our way to the two restaurants and bar, these were very well maintained and welcoming. Our orders for dinner were taken by Donna, we opted for the specials, brisket of beef and bream, we were not disappointed cooked to perfection! the starters and deserts equally excellent! All in all a very very enjoyable one night stay! Thank you to Penny, John, Sarah, Frank (the amazing chef), and the bar girls, Arran our breakfast waiter, we shall return.

"Business or Leisure"

996alech, Rochdale, United Kingdom 12/02/2020

I have just spent a brilliant nights stay at the Compass Inn. The staff are unbelievably friendly and helpful, there is loads of free parking, its in very easy reach of the M4 motorway and close to the A46 road into Bath. The rooms are spacious and comfortable and the food in the restaurant is excellent. I would recommend this hotel to everyone

"Never again."

Fransch, Oud-Beijerland, The Netherlands 13/01/2020

We stayed in ‘'Executive'' room 11, a small, poorly maintained, U-shaped room darkly furnished with a small window, so a dark room. The bed was directly on the floor !!!, NO bed frame, Particular for older people is it very difficult to get out of bed (rolling?). Only for our small dog it was easy, she could without jumping, walk onto the bed. There was no shelf in the bathroom to put toilet items on. With another couple (friends) we were the only guests, men would have thought that you would first give your best rooms, if this was the case then it leave to think about the other rooms. It was Sunday and there was only a choice of different roasts. The food was good. No coffee was available after dinner. So you can see that even Best Western is no guarantee for a good hotel. We will not return here.

"Not enough staff to cope with New Years Day"

User 01/01/2020

As a family we come here every year for New Year but this year has been a bit badly organised. Firstly I tried to pay over the phone a few days before arrival - I phoned the number on Google and got connected to America. They gave me another number to call which I did and I was on the phone for 15 minutes and all I was trying to do was pay. The price quoted was less than I was expecting which I queried at the time. She assured me it was the right price. When we checked in the same lady took ages to get the right key and then told me I hadn't paid in full even though I told her the price was wrong on the phone. The NYE meal itself was lovely - the food was delicious and served promptly (Donna was fantastic). The only thing is the menu said there would be petits fours - last year they got brought to the table but this year there didn't seem to be anything? We slept well and came down to breakfast at 9am. Sadly lots of people had the same idea so to be fair the breakfast room was suddenly heaving but they just did not have the staff to cope. There was no hot food or orange juice. The only things out were fruit and cereals. I think they normally have yoghurts but there were none of those. Also normally they come around and ask about teas and coffees but not this year. Eventually a working canister of communal coffee was brought out but some people didn't have cups. Similarly a large tea pot was brought out but the milk had run out. Some tables had their own pots of tea but nobody came to ask our table which is a shame. When the hot food was replenished the sausages weren't a nice quality. The guys who were working this morning were working hard (especially Arran) but there were not enough staff on. As I said we've been coming here for years and we know it's busier than other years which is fantastic for the family who own it but breakfast this morning was really disappointing.

"Evening meal on 30th November"

User 01/12/2019

Very poor meal. Went for a meal with another couple. 2 of us chose a meal which was unavailable so had to re-chose. The food was served up on COLD plates! Noooo! Complained straight away. No response at first. Eventually, waitress said. Sorry chef not available tonight so guessing that the head chef was on a night off. Absolutely rubbish food. Bad news travels fast. Never go back there.

"Outdated in more ways than one"

User 25/11/2019

The hotel it's self is looking very tired and the rooms, while clean, are very old fashioned. There is also a strange musty smell in the accommodation corridors. My biggest issue is the so called high speed WiFi internet connection. After spending more than thirty minutes trying to connect, it was impossible to use as the maximum download speed was less than half a meg, upload speed was actually too slow to measure and dropped the connection every minute or so.

User 26/10/2019

A very disappointing meal with friends.Venison main was uncooked and incorrectly cut and was returned to kitchen. Replacement fish and chips had a strange taste and was of very poor quality. I didn't think that restaurants served this sort of food anymore. Prices were high, and it was not good value.

"Lunchtime visit only in a hotel convenient to A46 and M4"

David D, Blakeney, United Kingdom 21/10/2019

This is a very pleasant old inn located within a few hundred yards of both the M4 and A46 junction. This provides a good lunchtime break point for anyone breaking their journeys to or from South Wales or Stroud and Bath. I visited only for lunch at a pleasant hotel, and although the chicken curry was tasty, I did find the profusion of star anise loose in the rice rather spoilt the dish when it would have been vastly improved by its flavour added through a muslin bag before serving to the customer !

"Family wedding"

jonathantakel, Yeovil, United Kingdom 19/10/2019

My cousin had his wedding here. Lovely hotel just off the M4. Ample parking on site. Staff are all very friendly and helpful. Its a very nice venue, lots of log fires around the place and 5 acres of grounds to walk in. Rooms are all of a good size with tea and coffee available. The bar is well stocked with a variety to suit all tastes. Breakfast is vet good and plenty to choice from. The staff were excellent and the wedding went smoothly, the food was fantastic.

David V, Cambridge, United Kingdom 16/10/2019

Excellent food and reasonably priced, comfy bed and lovely spacious room. Staff friendly and welcoming My wife lost a very sentimental ring which was found and posted back to her which she was delighted to have back. A big thank you.

"Comfortable hotel"

Hilary A, Luton, United Kingdom 30/09/2019

The hotel was located near to the m4, but down a country lane, so it was quiet. The restaurant was clean and tidy I would like to recommend the hotel for short stays and very convenient for travelling further afield.

9RichardM, Feltham, United Kingdom 26/09/2019

Stayed here for one night, warm friendly welcome, restaurant is nice and plenty of choice from the menu. Room is dated and had a very old smell to it, shower wasn't hot, WiFi wasn't strong enough to work in room which is a shame! Breakfast isn't all that either, it's layed out on a small hot plate but service is good. If your visiting please note to register your car as there's a parking warden outside.

"Good stay"

Sandytanyllyn, Carno, United Kingdom 23/09/2019

Very helpful and friendly staff, we stayed one night and had family join us for dinner, the were very patient with the children and and we had a lovely meal, the rooms are a bit dated but clean and tidy, that's all we needed. Everything you need for an overnight stay, the price is fantastic, we have been to lots of hotels in the last few years, we come down that way often to see family.this is certainly going to be a regular stop. If you want a 5* hotel then go somewhere else, this was very adequate for the price and food can't praise it enough

"Good value - Bit dated"

Macowl, Perth, Australia 10/09/2019

We stayed at this hotel as part of a Cotswold walk. This is just about the only option in Tormarton. Check-in was friendly and efficient. The room was really big but quite dated and a bit noisy, being close to the main road. Generally good value for money and was perfect for what we needed. We did not eat at the hotel, although we had a drink in the pub which was quite charming.

"The night I stayed there."

User 09/09/2019

There was a wedding party taking place. The noise went on until the early hours. Parts of the hotel the guests should not have been in they were in ! The staff tried ther best. I would not stay here if i knew a wedding party was taking place again. Too small a setting to look after paying guests as well.

"Lovely and comfortable overnight stay - Great value for money."

poppyrose2015, Saffron Walden, United Kingdom 09/09/2019

The exterior of the hotel was lovely and welcoming, and the check-in process was quick and easy. Room Decor was a little bland and could do with some updating. All staff were incredibly helpful and friendly throughout our stay. We thoroughly enjoyed our dinner in the evening which was tasty and good value for money. Breakfast was also lovely. My only 'suggested improvements' would be to perhaps have more fruit in the breakfast selection and larger cups in the rooms would be great.

"very dissapointed guest"

tina t, Bristol, United Kingdom 20/08/2019

I have stayed here before and it was very nice but this time it was my daughters wedding and I have to say from beginning to end I was very disapointed with the service, attitued of staff and the whole affair.

"A Good Find"

Jerry F, Isleworth, United Kingdom 18/08/2019

We needed to find somewhere relaxing for an overnight stay in this area for an early morning funeral at a nearby crematorium. This fitted the bill well in successfully combining a good restaurant,a friendly pub and quiet comfortable rooms. We were made to feel like guests -in the bar we chatted with the local customers, and the bar staff were happy to help us with our indecision by providing advice and samples! The restaurant had a good choice, food and service were excellent and we were not hurried. The rooms reflected the star rating ,were a reasonable size , quiet and comfortable although the showers could do with some updating. The only shortcoming was with the breakfast. As we stayed on a Sunday night it appeared that there were not many guests so the breakfast buffet was restricted to cereals, bread fruit and yoghurt and when a member did eventually appear we were told that we could order cooked breakfast. This took a long time and one member of our group who ordered scrambled eggs was told that they had to toast their own bread. That aside,we had an enjoyable stay which lifted our gloom over the forthcoming funeral

"Friendly staff. Nice Room."

jrcjr321, Stanton, Michigan 27/06/2019

I was booked here by the company that managed my hiking trip through the Cotswolds. Received a warm welcome upon arrival. Room was nice sized, clean. Wifi was terrible, and without it, no signal at all in that location. Had a nice TV in the room, but didn't realize until late I had no remote to control it. View from the room was a little garden area in the back and quite pretty. It was raining, so I didn't check out the rest of the grounds, but place seemed to be well taken care of. Not a good sound barrier in the rooms. Believe some fellows had been drinking in the bar and when they returned to their rooms had a very loud conversation in the hallway and I could hear them as if they were in the room with me. Had dinner in their restaurant and was disappointed they were out of burgers. Didn't love the fish I ordered as an alternative. Cheesecake was good, though. Breakfast the next morning was buffet style and everything plentiful and delicious in a nice room separate from the evening dining area.

"Our stay at compass inn"

Departure39482970832, Bristol, United Kingdom 23/05/2019

Our daughter got married here in March, so my husband & I thought it would be nice to go back there, so we could reminisce, we had stayed there for 2 nights, the night before the wedding, & the evening of the wedding had such a wonderful stay, it is such a lovely place, & the staff are very friendly & the food is amazing

"Visiting Badminton event"

Chris S, San Francisco 07/05/2019

The staff were delightful and very helpful. The food was good pub grub and the rooms were comfortable. Each day the journey into Badminton took about 15 minutes which was a delight apart from the Saturday which, due to the ridiculous traffic controls, took 2 hours to travel just 5 miles.

"Family Wedding"

linalot, England 30/04/2019

The Compass Inn was a very good location to have the Wedding. Everything went well. The conservatory was made up for the wedding and it looked lovely. The evening function was really nice and handled well. Staff were very helpful. They even made a long table up in the conservatory to have family meals which were really good. We spent 3 nights and could not fault anything,

"Ideal stay"

Joo D, Launceston, United Kingdom 28/04/2019

We stayed here for 2 nights whilst visiting family. The staff are really helpful and friendly especially the breakfast server. Our room was very large and comfortable, had a deal with free breakfast which had a good selection. Ate in the restaurant first day as tired from journey. My burger was really succulent and tasty, nice choice of specials too if required. A pleasant experience, would stay again.

"Exceptional Stay"

User 26/04/2019

We stayed for 2 nights as a family of four, sharing a room. The staff were friendly and helpful, the room was spotless and very comfortable. The layout was ideal, excellent location and incredible food!

"Great Customer Service"

User 06/04/2019

I had a very enjoyable experience at the Compass Inn, with great customer service from a young lady by the name Imie. She was very helpful and answered all questions that I had during my weekend away for work purposes.

User 15/03/2019

Convenient Hotel. Staff welcoming & helpful. The room they put me in had a strong smell of drains. they changed my room immediately & were very apologetic. Food was nice. Hotel itself could do with a refurb as it's a bit dated. Rate was a bit pricey (I've stayed at Holiday Inn Express which was more up-to-date at half the price). It was conveniently placed for our visit to our relative. Would stay again but at a lesser price.

"Fab hotel"

User 13/03/2019

I stay away a lot and this was a really great hotel. All the staff were really friendly and if your a best western member upgrades are easy. I received a fantastic room and was definitely value for money. I'll be back

"Excellent. First class hotel"

Johnandta, London, United Kingdom 23/02/2019

Arriving at the hotel we were welcomed by a friendly receptionist and check in was fast. The room was an executive room with superfast broadband comfy bed and all the amenities needed for a business stay. The breakfast was absolutely the best I have ever had in a chain Hotel even though this hotel felt like it was family run and my stay was superb because of this. I absolutely can't fault it from check in to check out and will definitely stay again for Leisure and business. A+++++++

"Light lunch on 2 Jan 2019"

David W, Stamford, United Kingdom 03/01/2019

Recommend by brother who had not visited for some time. A pretty run down exterior but this belied an excellent product, albeit in some faded elegance camouflage. Delightful service throughout from welcoming bar to restaurant. Food was really excellent -soup, smoked salmon starter, ham and eggs with chips to die for, and, despite a recent full cooked breakfast, my wife also enjoyed the sticky toffee pud-and cream!! Good drinks and coffee to finish. And a very fair price to boot. Top marks to the serving staffs and Chef-Thank you!

"The reception and restaurant staff were so kind"

lauraZ5587IY, Baldock, United Kingdom 11/12/2018

The best part of the stay was the friendly hotel staff. The room was spotless; thank you to the cleaning staff! The room was really good value for money. The grounds were lovely as well. There was a wedding which added to the interest of statying. The guests were quiet and respectful. We had a very good night's sleep.

"Warm welcome, would stay again"

Hilary S, Milton Keynes, United Kingdom 27/10/2018

Very helpful and friendly staff, from booking on the phone to filling our flask for the return journey. We only stayed one night on business, but I would love to go back for a leisure break. The hotel has lots of areas to sit and relax, all very comfortable and warm. Would also be suitable for business meetings. Our room, on the ground floor, was spacious and well equipped (small fridge was handy). Can't wait to return and explore the area.

"Well placed for Cotswold Way walkers, comfortable, helpful and friendly staff"

spudjwalker, Gloucester, United Kingdom 16/10/2018

This is a comfortable and friendly hotel near the city of Bath, Cotswold Way (for those walking it) and main road. Bar and restaurant, food was really nice. Very helpful staff, lady very kindly lifted me to Yate railway station as it was too rainy a day for walking. Definitely recommend

"Older establishment, but we loved our stay here."

Deb M, Edwardsville, Illinois 10/10/2018

This hotel is dated, but we loved it here. The rooms are clean and certainly adequate. Ours accommodated 3 of us comfortably for several nights. What was remarkable about this place was the staff and the restaurant. Every single staff member went out of their way to be helpful, including one person who even offered to do our laundry! And dinner at the restaurant was amazing--when I think of the pork belly dinner, my mouth starts to water. We were very sad to leave.

"Short Business Stay"

David C, N.Ireland, United Kingdom 06/10/2018

Excellent country hotel with very good access to the motorway. Ideal spot for the west country and the midlands. Room was spacious and clean. I was lucky enough to be at the back of the hotel and it was very quiet. Staff were welcoming. Very good food and a nice "English" pub. Perfect way to end the afternoon with a cold drink out in the garden. Will be staying longer next time

"Very convenient for the Cotswold Way"

User 05/10/2018

This inn is a no brainier for the Cotswold Way. Almost right on the trail. Rooms spacious and clean with all the accoutrements you'd need for your stay. We decided against an evening meal at the hotel but the breakfast was just fine.

"Quite satisfed"

User 23/09/2018

Restaurant and lounge staff very good and accommodating our late arrival. Also check-in staff. Food delicious. Room - ummm - ok. Nothing special. Beds passable. For one night ok. Convenient location to Bath.

"Good place for a quick business meeting"

Caroline503904, Gillingham, United Kingdom 18/09/2018

Meet here two or three times a year as it's convenient to get to from West Midlands and North Dorset. Not luxurious but adequate for coffees and light lunch. Don't know what the bedrooms are like. Very helpful staff and a nice atmosphere. Usually sit in the conservatory and plug in the laptops. No complaints.

"Excellent place and good value"

andy41961, Sheffield, United Kingdom 03/09/2018

Stayed recently for a night on business and was extremely impressed with this place. It is handily located for the M4 with plenty of parking and good rooms. However, the best thing has to be the food in the pub which was good and very reasonably priced. Also as I was leaving early I requested a breakfast tray which cost a fiver and included juice, yoghurt, fruit, muesli, danish pastry and a muffin and so again I thought was great value. If working near here again I would undoubtedly use this hotel.

"So very disappointing "

Lesley_ga, Bristol, United Kingdom 27/08/2018

I last visited this pub about 30 years ago, when it was a lovely, upmarket restaurant with a beautiful orangery. We decided to revisit on Friday with friends, having read good reviews of food. First appearance was that pub was very tired and dated and had remained stuck in the 70's. We asked for a large glass of wine in the bar and the barmaid said they didn't have any large wine glasses as one of the staff had dropped them all! We went through to restaurant and were told we could sit where we liked. We chose to sit in the Orangery, as the small restaurant was full, but which was virtually empty and lacked any atmosphere. We waited ages for a waitress to offer a menu and chose some nibbles to share whilst choosing our main course. The food was mainly very good -with the exception of the vegetarian option (Linda McCartney sausages and mashed potatoes). I had the belly of pork which was lovely. My husband had beer battered fish and chips - again very nice. We finished our drinks and I had to go to the bar, to ask for a waitress to take our order, as there was none in evidence. The barmaid said she would come through from the bar to take our order. In the event, a waitress was found who took our order. By the time we had our dessert, the waitresses were making up the room for breakfast, and it was obvious that they just wanted us out. The only people eating there were obviously staying at the hotel and all had an early night! There was a distinct lack of management - all the staff appeared to be around 18 years old, apart from an elderly lady sitting in the bar when we left. Assumed she was hotel proprietor. Such a disappointing evening

"delicious food and excellent service made an enjoyable late Sunday lunch."

2weekenders, Nr Bristol 19/08/2018

Have just had a very enjoyable late Sunday lunch following a motoring event. From the good choice menu we chose dishes of roast beef and belly pork. Our meals arrived reasonably quickly, were piping hot and had a good choice of seasonal vegetables. They were delicious. Service was excellent. Situated just a couple of minutes off M4 Jct 17 (A46 North) the Compass Inn made an ideal stopping point for a meal and rest before continuing onwards. Would certainly visit again.

"Amazing food!!"

B-happy1977, Ystalyfera, United Kingdom 16/08/2018

What amazing food on a la carte menu. Lamb and confit duck leg in the pictures were so Fab! If I am anywhere near this place or not even close I will always make a trip to go here. Usually have home made pie which is lush but these were another level!

"Great location and stop-off enroute"

Late-Starter-7, Kent, England 17/07/2018

Stopped here for one night on our way to Bristol. Very nice hotel, bar area and restaurant very well presented. The rooms were a bit tired but adequate. The staff were very friendly and the breakfast was nice with good quality locally sourced ingredients.

"Air show stay over "

User 15/07/2018

Excellent hotel, very welcoming front of house, rooms spacious and comfortable, lovely big bed ( would say the rooms would benefit from some form of aircon, quite warm in this weather) bathrooms clean and functional. We had dinner on the second night which when it finally came out was worth the wait ??. And the cost. 2 little criticisms ... the lady waiting the table could do with some people skills and a smile ?? she was very bland and make Etonmess the right way !! That said thoroughly enjoyed my dinner Breakfast was lovely all be it more expensive that say holiday inn or travel lodge and had i of known the cost may have gone else where. But that all said would definitely stay there again x which is why it has 4 stars x

"Great friendly hotel and excellent restaurant"

Elliott_Ware, Ware, United Kingdom 10/07/2018

Had great food, well priced and exceeded expectations. Helpful friendly staff. Clean room. Easy parking. Cold beer, comfortable lounge areas. Easy to find. Everything I could want for a stay away from home. Would happily come back again.

"Beautiful orangery"

User 10/07/2018

Loved our brief evening meal at the compass. The food was lovely and the bar maid was friendly. However... it was very quiet and we were the only diners in the orangery room. Small bar, but beautiful rooms and dining room.

"Tired "

russ h, Bromley, United Kingdom 02/07/2018

Stayed here Saturday, June 30th for 1 night. Relieved it was only 1 night! The place is very tired indeed, needs some attention. I stayed in the “Charlotte suite”, bed was appalling, (I think the ole' mattress may be an original feature)?! Shower was a useless trickle, the hot tap in the basin didn't work, barely a drip could be encouraged from the cold! Very friendly and helpful lady on reception Emily, but the rest of the staff and the service they attempted to provide was nothing short of hopeless. The bloke behind the tiny horrendously under stocked bar couldn't have been less interested if he'd been trying to win the *lets see who can look the least interested* competition! A couple of good points would be, lovely quiet, pretty location. The food was ok when it eventually did make it to the table (minus all/any condiments, they came just as we'd finished said food). And, the Bacon in my sandwich I had for my early departure was delicious, the bread sadly was more stale than the most stale thing ever recorded as being stale. If it had been £50 room only I'd say great. At £106 room only I'd have to say very disappointing sadly.

"Terrible service, left in the dark!"

TimL153, Bristol, United Kingdom 25/06/2018

Have been here several times for a meal but won't be back. We were celebrating a big birthday and asked for a bottle of sparkling wine. It was plonked on our table with no offer of opening it or pouring. We arrived about 7.45 when it was fairly busy but the place was dead before10. We were sitting in the conservatory and the fairy lights were switched off and we we were left in the dark. Service was poor and we had to wait ages for a waitress to take our order, as if they didn't care. A real shame as the food was good and well prepared.

"Could have been much better"

stuartanita22, Norwich, United Kingdom 17/06/2018

Executive room a real disappointment. Very dated and bathroom needed refurbishment. Dinner- food was excellent but waited an hour for each course. There clearly was a problem but staff were not supported by any management and didn't know how to deal with all the complaints and some customers walked out. A less than adequate experience.

"Nice hotel for a brief stay near the Cotswolds."

blueflinders2018, Buckinghamshire, United Kingdom 08/06/2018

We stayed here for a long weekend with our 2 small dogs as they are advertised as dog-friendly. We were not allowed in the restaurant which is understandable but it was bizarre having to walking outside the hotel and round to the pub to have breakfast (or any other meals). There is an orangery that has a tiled floor and we should have been able to sit in here - or at least walk through to the bar from here. Our room was not a dog-friendly one (as we were told by a member of staff) and we were on the first floor. The walls are very, very thin and our neighbours were incredibly noisy and had showers at gone midnight both nights - not sure if they perhaps worked in the hotel - and of course this woke the dogs up and made them bark which woke us up and quite possibly other guests. You can literally hear everything through the walls including people talking! I would not stay here again due to the thin walls and also the fact that they don't really accommodate dogs.

"Business Stay"

User 06/06/2018

Very warm welcome and charming hotel. Restaurant was beautiful, bar was and olde Inn, was a very plesant stay. Food and drink were very good, staff were friendly and helpful. Will be returning i am sure.

"Could have been pretty good..."

John W, Shrewsbury, United Kingdom 01/06/2018

I was looking for somewhere to stay regularly on business in the area. Firstly, their postcode could take you up a single lane road to a farmhouse - I had to use my phone to locate the hotel, which is actually on the main road. Quite a pleasant aspect and efficient check-in. Room was maybe a little tired but more than adequate, roomy and comfortable. Wifi is free, but slow, not good for business. The restaurant was a real pleasant surprise. Very friendly staff and superb food. Great value. Breakfast was the opposite unfortunately. Server seemed to be struggling a bit to serve four people in the breakfast room at the time. Cooked food is made to order - when it arrived, it was pretty disgusting and inedible. I would have been embarrassed to serve it, let along try and charge £11.50 for the privilege. Could be a great little place for business travelers, but going to work on an empty stomach is a downer.

"Relaxing Business Stop Over"

jgill947, Bristol, United Kingdom 17/05/2018

Charming old Inn, needs a little TLC, but overall very satisfied. A warm welcome and very well looked after throughout my stay, food was very good, beautiful vine covered restaurant. Bedroom was nice and bed gave me a good nights rest!

"Dated and expensive"

User 03/05/2018

Hotel was very dated and our evening meal was served within 10 mins of ordering and was all the same molten hot temperature, And was very average. Staff were very friendly and help full. Breakfast was very disappointing paid 6.95 toast and a cup of tea and a glass of value apple juice. The hotel served it's purpose but was expensive for what we had. I wouldn't stay here again

"Excellent lunch"

Chander_62, Cardiff, United Kingdom 30/04/2018

The place was busy on Saturday when we visited for lunch. It is not far from Junction 18 on M4 motorway and easy to find. All the lunches we ordered were fine and tasty. We were in one of the dining rooms but there was a garden like area which was very pleasant where one could also sit and have food. There was slight delay in having our dessert as the staff were trying to serve those who had ordered lunches. Would certainly recommend and visit this place again

"Great food"

Steve J, Wrexham, United Kingdom 29/04/2018

Stayed here for 6 nights in total in April. The rooms are clean and tidy. There is a mini bar with water beer and soft drinks if you fancy a drink in the room. I would recommend the bar through. The service is great all the bar staff really friendly. The food I had each night was of very good quality. Will be staying again. Check in and out are easy and quick.

"Disappointing meal."

User 13/04/2018

Ten of us recently went to the Compass Inn for a family reunion, unfortunately my wife and I were left totally under whelmed by the lunch that we had traveled 120 miles for. My wife ordered ham, egg and chips but without the egg as she is allergic to them. The meal eventually arrived with an egg on top of the ham, ( which incidentally was so wafer thin that you could have looked through it ). The waitress took the meal away and returned having obviously simply scraped the offending egg off. This left a plate of chips with some very soggy luke warm ham which was pretty much inedible. With a large group as we were it is not easy to complain at the time but we certainly expected better from Best Western, needless to say we will not be returning. Max Danby

"Weekend break visiting family"

Stephen B, Princes Risborough, United Kingdom 10/04/2018

The food and staff were excellent and the room very clean. The hotel décor is however a little dated. The location is good for the Cotswolds, Bath and Bristol. We would recommend this for traveling/touring this area.

"Great stay"

sue682018, Peterborough, United Kingdom 03/04/2018

Very clean room. Enormous breakfast. We were staying with our grandchild and nothing was too much trouble. We were able to order specific items for her breakfast.Very friendly and attentive staff who provided extra items on request.

"Fantastic Hotel & Restaurant"

Scott A, Chester, United Kingdom 30/03/2018

Stayed for one evening while en route to Cornwall. Far exceeded my expectations and it we found it to be quite outstanding. Front desk service was very friendly. Stayed in a family room with our dog. Room was very clean and beds very comfortable. During our stay, we also enjoyed the restaurant at the hotel. Service was excellent and the food was perfect, especially after a long day of driving. Quite surprised by the price of each meal as we found it comparable if not cheaper than comparable restaurants in the area. Especially impressed as we normally pay much more at restaurants attached to hotels.

"Excellent meal with a friend"

HDHT, Swindon, United Kingdom 22/03/2018

Having not been here for 10 or so years, I couldn't help but wonder whether the standards I experienced before had been maintained. Rest assured they had; the meal was lovely, the staff professional, friendly and welcoming. The restaurant is quaint and a little quirky (just the ticket). Two lovely mains and puddings with drinks for two for £40. I certainly won't leave it another 10 years before revisiting.

"Lovely Quaint Inn"

frostypaws789, Chester, United Kingdom 14/02/2018

very clean and comfortable inn. Staff friendly and helpful would recommend. Breakfast was cooked beautifully and local sausages !Would have liked to explore the village but time was against us. Very handy for all major traffic routes and no noise at all.

"Food terrible service just as bad"

jeadie, Glasgow, United Kingdom 08/02/2018

Rooms nice enough but lack of chefs or ability to put something together was very poor. Microwaved scrambled eggs £11.00 .. sandwich for dinner as chef finishes at 8.30, didn't want to put him out or add further stress to his day accommodation okay but eat elsewhere.. McDonald's or something

"Excellent situation, friendly staff "

User 14/01/2018

Lovely hotel with friendly helpful staff and excellent food. Very convenient for Bristol, Bath and the Cotswolds. Quiet comfortable rooms. Would definitely come again. We booked directly with hotel and got a really good deal.

"Convenient Location - Excellent Food"

Phillip S, Leyland, United Kingdom 12/01/2018

Conveniently located off the M4 motorway - this hotel offers excellent food. The accommodation is adequate but 'dated' - as the original building has been extended several times access to some rooms may be poor (long corridors with steps etc)

"Compass Inn"

User 11/12/2017

Lovely hotel with friendly and helpful staff. Restaurant food was excellent. Manager and staff were not only helpful with hotel information but also details of Park and Ride and what was going on in Bath, best places to visit including Christmas Market. We will definitely be staying here again.

"Tired needs upgrading"

User 06/12/2017

This hotel is in an excellent location, within 1/4 mile of the M4, but it is so tired and requires a complete face lift. Poor lighting in corridors, and bedrooms. Brown stained paintwork throughout, worn carpets, thread bear in several places. This hotel is sadly lacking in everything, and senior management needs to step up.

"Lovely country Inn"

S2059QUjamesb, Tormarton, United Kingdom 06/12/2017

Stayed over night whilst away for business and found a cracking little Inn. The staff and food were fantastic, the Inn is a proper old fashioned type, stone walls, open fires, and good cask ales. Very comfortable room, good breakfast. Will be using the Compass again.

409heidif, Wiltshire, United Kingdom 04/12/2017

Excellent accommodation superb food friendly staff. Very comfortable beds. Ideal place for a quiet get away from a busy life. Would highly recommend to anyone and everyone. Will definitely be staying again.

"Conveniently situated Best Western Hotel"

User 11/11/2017

This was a return visit to The Compass Inn, located just off the M4. The rooms are spacious and comfortable and I have never been troubled by any noise. The food is excellent - plain simple pub fare in the main - their ploughman's is a work of art! All in all a very pleasant stay

""One nights stop over""

goak2017, Woodbridge, United Kingdom 31/10/2017

I found this hotel on a search engine as we were looking for a one night stop over traveling to Pembrokeshire with our dog. the location is great just off the M4 and so easy to find after a tiring long drive. The room itself was Ok and fit for purpose in fact quite a comfy bed however, like most hotels in the UK the bathroom was a complete let down. It was probably stylish many decades ago but no longer meets the needs of to days traveller. The staff were all very helpful and polite, we had a meal in the Orangery where we enjoyed the relaxed atmosphere, the food was very good and extremely plentiful and the breakfast was cooked to perfection. It suited our purpose and I would stay again if the bathrooms receive some much needed attention !

"Convenient hotel"

scooperwoman, Wokingham, United Kingdom 12/10/2017

Convenient hotel with friendly staff. Room was spacious, but noise travelled particularly from the room above - sound insulation badly needed. Good selection for breakfast and the restaurant was pleasant, but a bit overpriced.

"Rooms are ok, but food is very good"

User 06/10/2017

I've stayed here a number of times, the staff are really friendly and helpful. The rooms are ok (a little dated, and the fridges in the rooms are always noisy!), and the cleanliness of the rooms is always good. What makes me always come back though is the food, as it's always fantastic.

"Cozy at the Inn"

nata_leigh20, London, United Kingdom 01/10/2017

Cute little room, felt like home away from home. Stayed for one night and was that more than enough, the room had a comfortable bed and everything was clean. No complaints at all, just enough for a short stay and it's only a 20 minute drive from Bath central.

"Would highly recommend"

User 27/09/2017

Very friendly and helpful family run hotel. Very close to the Cotswolds Way Walk so was perfect for us and they were very welcoming to the dog as well and gave us extra dog towels. The pub attached had excellent food - good value, beautifully presented and very tasty!

"Room 1/5 and Food 4/5"

Timtyke, London 20/09/2017

Real mixed feelings about this hotel Room: - no soundproofing in the room at all, so you can hear people snoring and going to the bathroom = poor night's sleep - clean beds but very dated for a Best Western and would expect more for the money paid Hotel: - really pleasant and helpful staff all over the hotel - tip, if you come from the M4 direction go past the first car park on the right and take the second right - if you park in the first one you will end up going right through the hotel's rooms and corridors to find reception - not a lot around as there's no path to the village which is 15/20 minutes walk away - there is a bar with a few draft beers and lots of gin on offer Food - Evening - just excellent!! in terms of quality, presentation and cost - definitely recommend eating here Food - Breakfast - very ordinary - stale pastries Overall: having tried a few BW hotels in the UK and lots in Europe and the States this is no where near their usual standards - not sure why - as a result we won't be using it again simply as I expect a better night's sleep

"Cosy hotel"

PamY_11, Redditch, United Kingdom 14/09/2017

Ok so not the smartest hotel I have stayed in but very cosy Room adequate for our needs, decent size and comfy bed and good shower Staff all very pleasant Good car park Good location, close to lots of attractions Food nice and decent prices Wifi ok but not so good in the lounge

"Very Disappointed"

J_LWigan, Wigan, United Kingdom 10/09/2017

My wife and I are well travelled, both in the UK and overseas. We have stayed at a number of hotels throughout the UK for one or two night breaks. We decided to join Best Western after a memorable stay at one of their hotels. We have stayed at the same hotel on a number of ocassions, but unfortunately there were no vacancies for this particular visit. Believing our experience at the Gables would be replicated at one of her sister hotels we booked the Compass Inn. I was expecting a nice sizeable room with King Size bed. We were allocated room 22, just at the top of a staircase with significant passing of our door by other guests. The walls were paper thin, we could clearly hear other guests conversations, their TV's, creaking floor boards & beds. The room was small, had a single wardrobe & en-suite. The bed was noisy & not as comfortable as we had ben accustomed to in this chain. Whist the general cleanliness of the room was acceptable, finding two very large spiders and their webs, one immediately above the bed and one in the corner adjcent to the TV was unexpected. There was also a fly buzzing about in the en-suite. We had an uncomfortable noisy night with dirupted sleep & were looking forward to a hearty breakfast. The food iteself was perfectly adequate, it was a shame that there were only two staff on duty waiting on & guests were not being greeted with their room numbers checked. This resulted in guests enterng drom two different doors & simply selecting their own tables. Obviously the waiter & waitress had little or no idea who was seated first and worked their way through the tables as quickly as they could. We were 20 minutes into sitting at a table before being offered coffee or tea & asked if we would like anything from the breakfast menu. I do not blame the hard working staff, but would suggest the managent use 'Best Practice' which I beieve is in evidence at the Gables, but sorely missed at the Compass. Having paid significantly more for a room at this hotel, than we usually pay at the Gables, we were very disappointed with the room. We will not use this hotel again.

"Recommend and a great place to stay for a night"

emeraldelegance0, Leicester, United Kingdom 04/09/2017

This hotel is located right off the main road, very easy to find, and offers food until late. There is also a meeting room which would be perfect for a conference. My room was tidy and the bedroom was nicely decorated, however little bathroom space. The only down-sider is to get to the reception you have to pass more or less every room which is tiring unless you park at the back.

"Highly Recommended "

Sravan_Mitter, Bengaluru, India 29/08/2017

Got ourselves booked for two nights as we were visiting Bath and Stonehenge - both of which are a short drive away, max one hour. Located off the main motorway, it's tucked away amongst farming fields. Very quiet surroundings and friendly staff. The rooms were as per expectation as I have stayed in best western properties before. Took a short walk around a quaint locality too. Ample parking space. Did not try the breakfast as our meal timings got messed up but that's just us. :) Definitely recommended for a quick stay. The food is excellent and they whipped up an excellent lamb and chicken dish. Even customised my son's dinner.

"Conference facilities..."

User 24/08/2017

This is the first 'negative' review I have left on TripAdvisor, as I always try to seek a solution to a problem with the venue directly, before 'going public'. Unfortunately, I write this, as the two emails I sent to the venue providing constructive feedback have been totally ignored, which I find unacceptable. I held a half day business meeting at The Compass Inn a few weeks back and whilst the staff were friendly enough and helped where they could, they require more training. I will summarise the issues: 1. The meeting room was incredibly hot, due to the adjacent room acting as a greenhouse! There was no forward thinking from the staff to open the windows prior to arrival, which made the entire session uncomfortable. 2. Fire alarms were sounding every few minutes for over an hour, completely disrupting our session - none of the staff came to address the issue, it was down to me to chase them on 3 occasions. 3. I had to chase for pre-ordered refreshments, even though I specified a time for them to be supplied. 4. They charged me £54.20 for what was essentially 2 large pots of tea and 2 pots of coffee. 5. When requesting a projector, they handed it to me, without an extension cable, rendering it useless. 6. Despite the room being advertised for up to 12 delegates, with the use of a projector, there is literally no way to setup the room to allow for this. At best, 10 delegates can just about sit around the table and view the projector screen. I like to use independently owned venues where possible, as I work in the SME world myself. Unfortunately, this venue's approach to customer service has caused me to re-think my policy on this.

"Stopped for dinner"

Robert W, Cardiff, United Kingdom 05/08/2017

+Just called in for dinner en-route to Bath. -Wish we'd carried on to Bath!! Food quality was very poor. My wife had ham which smelt and tasted off. On complaint to waitress she returned it to the kitchen and returned to advise that the 'chef' had no comment to make other than that he would check his remaining stock to see if it was the same?? Not even an appology or follow up-- I think they have lost their service compass!! Very poor quality food.

"Really quite tired "

Ken R, Andover, United Kingdom 05/08/2017

If you are looking for a lower priced hotel close to Bath it's a good choice. Even better for Dyrham Park as it's one of the closest. Alas, the whole hotel is quite in need of updating. The room (38) was quite dark as there was a lot of foliage built up outside the window. It was also noisy from the extractor fan in the room above. It was intrusively noisy. The walk from Reception is quite a hike. We had a drink in the bar when we got back in the evening and it didn't give the impression of a place to linger. All in all the countryside location and quiet surrounding should make it an awful lot better than it is. Three stars rather than two because the room was spotless.

"Amazing food and very friendly staff "

tatoemonkey, Leeds, United Kingdom 25/07/2017

We checked in and the room was nice but the bathroom was a little dated decoration wise that said everything worked and worked well too. A very nice hot shower and it was all spotlessly clean too. After getting back to the hotel a little late for dinner and absolutely soaking and covetd in mud we were given a menu told order your food then go get dry and changed if you want to we will cook your meal and will wait for you to get back to your table or call your room when its ready. A shower and a hot meal. The portions are generous and this is some very good home cooking! The staff were so lovely we had a bit of car trouble too and they just made everything ok. Bed was a little firm for us but that's personal preference to be fair. Can't fault this place and I would definitely stay here again and we are two fussy ladies!

"Drab, dull and in need of help"

CottonKing1, Doncaster 21/07/2017

Really disappointed in our stay. The hotel is in desperate need of a makeover. There is a horrible smell of damp which given the number of automatic air freshners going off in the corridors I suggest the hotel is trying to mask, however the horrible smell is still there. The bed was appalling, I could feel the bed springs coming up underneath the sheet. We were so disappointed we didn't bother with breakfast so cannot comment on the food. Plus point, the lady on reception was pleasant.

"Nothing special and dated"

THutsUK, Leicester, United Kingdom 12/07/2017

So, after driving around the village for ages, calling the hotel and being told that it 'might be on my left or right off the man road' I finally stumbled across it. Despite it being past 11pm, the lady at the check in was friendly and helpful. To be blunt, I was expecting more. The rooms were spacious, but very dated and had that fusty 'the carpet has seen more action than me' smell. For sone reason my bed was the fold down from a wardrobe sort - but was comfy enough. The shower was electric, but was actually fine. The main gripe was that the walls were paper thin. I'll stay at the premier inn a couple of villages over next time.

"Compass Inn"

geoff l, Greater Manchester, United Kingdom 10/07/2017

Comfortable, spacious bedrooms & good breakfast. Bathrooms quite dated but clean - bathroom lighting poor. Hotel in a good location for visiting Bristol, Chippenham, but lounges & general areas in need of updating/ re-decorating. Due to this we felt our stay was a little over priced. We waited a long time to be served coffee in the lounge!

"Evening meal with family/friends"

Geoff A, Bristol, United Kingdom 09/07/2017

We were a party of 4 for an evening meal. Staff were very efficient and polite. Food was great - spot on for what we needed with a great selection. We sat in the extension bit which was a little warm (but wasn't everywhere!) - fascinating grape vine grows across the ceiling which is a bit of a talking point.

"A convenient meeting point."

TonyTheDriver, Bristol, United Kingdom 08/07/2017

My wife and I live in Bristol but our family lives all over England. We have used the Compass Inn at Tormarton, Gloucester as a meeting point if the family are in transit but not planning to actually stay with us, because it is immediately adjacent to Junction 18 of the M4 Motorway and easily accessible as they are passing by. This is a Best Western hotel, probably about 3 stars. The restaurant is very reasonable in quality and price. Beers and wines seem very reasonable and the staff are efficient and affable. There is ample parking with large areas of grass for families with small children who want to run-around a bit. One thing which surprised me was that we called in recently for afternoon tea. We could have tea but there wasn't a menu option for a strawberry cream tea. We made do with blueberry muffins and tea-cakes and it was all very nice but a large venue like that should in my opinion be able to produce something a little more exciting than one type of tea and a limited selection of cakes and biscuits from the bar. I will certainly call again, it has all that we need for a family meeting place but with a little energy it could be a whole lot better. For example, do be aware of the large holes in the entrance to the car park which have the potential to damage the suspension on a vehicle.

"Great Overnight stop over"

341camerons, Badminton, United Kingdom 08/07/2017

Stay for a stop over as the traffic on the motorways was slow. Glad I found this hotel, tuck back out of the way, just a couple of minutes off the motorway, but you cant hear the traffic noise. All of the staff were friendly and Food was some of the best I've tasted. Had a couple of pints of cloudy cider, all in all, it turned out to be a great evening to be fed, watered and rested up!! Will pop back in again if I am in the area again.

"Poor example of Best"

Silex, Kent, England 06/07/2017

Erratic & slow Wi-Fi, no phone service and faded décor. On the upside the food was OK, the staff were friendly and at least I had company at my breakfast table - although the ants weren't much company!

"Dated accommodation!!"

SVTJumbo, Cheltenham, United Kingdom 03/07/2017

Certainly a very mixed bag... Oldie country inn that actually had very comfortable rooms. However the bathroom was in need of a spruce up & the shower replaced. Noise was horrendous as soon as you put it on. We had food in the restaurant which was really nice. Although a little expensive. We had a stopover because of an event in Bath centre, early morning. Asked about the 'breakfast to go' & was told what it consisted of. Sounded ok till we actually picked our breakfast up when we checked into our rooms at 20.30. Obviously a cold croissant, hard apple, muffin & some sort of fruit juice #notsure For the money it was ok. Just a little disappointed with the breakfast option.

"Improtu night out!"

D8818KMjasonr, Tormaton, United Kingdom 02/07/2017

Came out for a afternoon meal, was very impressed so we decided to make a day of it. Booked a room, and had a great night, food was the best, staff were charming. Will recommend this place to family and friends. Keep up the good work.

"Medium sized countryside hotel"

CWoof93, Woking, United Kingdom 25/06/2017

We were aiming to stay in a B&B in the village of Tormarton, but availability dictated us spending the night here instead. The Compass is just (5 minute walk) outside the village. The staff were friendly, and the rooms clean. It was very satisfying to soak in the bath after a hard day walking in the hills! Breakfast was very nice, with a broad range of choices available; again the staff were attentive. Our main issue was with our neighbours, who returned to their room at around 4am, only to have an extremely loud conversation that was all too audible from our beds. In defence, it is extremely unlikely to ever be in the vicinity of people with such booming voices (and let's not discuss the snoring), but we were rudely awoken and left ruing the fact the walls were not thicker / more soundproof. There is a restaurant on-site, and the menu seemed enticing, but we opted to head into the village to a local pub for our dinner.

"Blast from the Past"

jacw2000, Bristol, UK 18/06/2017

Forty years ago, fresh out of uni, I lived down the road and worked behind the bar here. It hasn't changed a great deal. Although when I walked in wearing a suit and tie, the chap on reception called me sir, so perhaps it's me that has changed. I wasn't staying in the hotel. That's been added since my time, as has reception desk and car park. It's now part of the Best Western chain. Unlike most chain hotels, it has character. It's also very handy for the M4 motorway. It used to be the place to meet someone else's spouse for an assignation. Lots of small lounges to sit and gaze into each other's eyes. If you met anyone else you knew there, you wouldn't catch his eye because he would be with his inamorata too. The barmen watched and smiled quietly to ourselves. Perhaps they still do. Before you ask, I was here for a business meeting, We sat in the lounge and drank a perfectly nice cup of tea. As far as I could tell nobody was having an affair with anyone, but it was early of course. Reception was friendly and efficient, more efficient than me. Tea came quickly and we had the place pretty much to ourselves. Nice bars. Nice garden.

"Fabulous breakfast"

drnbh, Nottinghamshire, United Kingdom 11/06/2017

As the title, the breakfast is fabulous, cooked to order, fresh fruit and pastries. The staff hard working, pleasant and helpful. The hotel and bar etc, lovely picturesque Inn as expected. The bedroom, large, spacious, clean, king sized comfortable bed. Decor, a little tired. Fridge/ mini bar in room. Downside, the walls and floors not sufficiently thick to prevent it being very noisy ( there was a wedding the 2nd night but we were advised about it on booking). Creaking floorboards and the walking/talking echoed, therefore we didn't sleep well on either night. Accommodation could do with a refurb but a pleasant stay.

"Lovely, would recommend."

samantha p, Northampton, United Kingdom 10/06/2017

It was quite tricky to find as we went through some country lanes but once we noticed the hand written sign we made our was there and were pleasantly surprised, was lovely! We were greeted at the reception as we checked in by a personable male and made our own way to the room. The room was a good size with a large double bed, en suite, TV and honesty mini fridge. The hotel offered room service and lots of little extras that make the difference when staying away from home such as free tooth brush/paste should you forget yours, free wifi and a lovely comfy room. Breakfast was included in the price and was absolutely delicious!! Selection of continental and cooked, definitely compliments to the chef. We visited Bath in the day which was fab too - lovely city!

"Overnight stay"

Totalstardom, Stoke-on-Trent, United Kingdom 07/06/2017

Pleasant friendly hotel nothing too much trouble for the staff. Food is excellent and pleased the wild boar was of the menu as had the salmon to,start with instead this was probably one of the best starters I have ever had. Sat talking with staff and locals and owner at the end of the evening and made to feel it was my local though this was our first visit. Only complaint and it is nit picky the bed was too low or me. Would definetly go back again and again.

"Superb food !!"

Susan B, Cardiff, United Kingdom 05/06/2017

Driving back from Bournemouth with some friends having stayed overnight we decided to stop for lunch but didn't fancy a services meal so googled restaurants as we neared the M4 and this place came up so thought we would give it a try best decision made the Hotel is 2/3 mins off M4 on Bath turn off the food was fantastic incredible choice and very reasonably priced would highly recommended and will most definitely look forward to going there again should we be in the area Highly recommend!

"Dated Rooms"

jeff53, Nottingham 29/05/2017

Its a shame that the rooms in this hotel let it down. The location is great, the food is very nice indeed and the staff are warm and friendly. But this is a hotel, and as a hotel it needs a great deal of investment to bring up to the standards that the business traveler expects. The building is a warren of corridors, and as someone early pointed out, there is a musty smell. The decor in the rooms is novel to say the least and not very nice, reminds me of my grannies. Noise insulation is very poor so hope you get a neighbour who goes to bed early and doesn't watch TV, because you hear it. WiFi is just not up to modern standards. I hope they do improve the rooms because it could be very nice and they could charge a lot more

"Great Food"

Richard E, West Midlands, United Kingdom 25/05/2017

Travelling on business, this Hotel is easy to find from the M4, The staff here are friendly, room 17 was a good size & clean but creaky floorboards from room above were a little too noisy especially as the occupier had a restless nights sleep! I visited the restaurant for my evening meal & was pleasantly surprised by the standard of the food which was fantastic!!! Breakfast too has a good choice on the menu. I will definitely be returning to this hotel.

"Weekend stop over"

SimT77, Bristol, United Kingdom 23/05/2017

My wife and I, wanted to break up the journey from Cornwall to Leicester, and thought this would be a good place to rest and split up the journey. We have been in before for lunch which has always been lovely, and we weren't disappointed this time either. We had a lovely room with all the usual bits, mini bar, kettle, en suite, etc. The evening meal was beautiful, and the breakfast the next morning was lovely too. The staff very very friendly and helpful, nothing seemed too much. Will be doing the same trip in September, and will be coming here again!!

"Ok for overnight "

Dean1000, Binfield, United Kingdom 19/05/2017

The Hotel phoned me as I was late to say the Kitchen was closing 9pm which I thought was a nice touch. On arrival I ordered food and it was delivered to my room. The staff were very friendly. It is a quiet location to say it is so close to the M4. The room was in need of some modernisation and the bathroom definitely needed some attention, but saying this, it was clean and the bed was extremely comfortable. If you are a light sleeper, ask for the upper floor as the floor boards creak a lot!

"Great food, poor room"

Stephen W, Hutton, United Kingdom 08/05/2017

First impressions on arrival in the hotel car park are of a poorly maintained building; rendered walls green with algae, grounds needing attention and a pathway in need of a resurface. Once directed to our room through a maze of doors and stairs the hotel took a Faulty Towers look - sapele veneer doors, swirly carpets and 80s artex ceilings. Our room was basic, poorly presented but spacious. The en suite had blue Lino style walls and enough mastic around the bath to fill a 3" gap. The wall mounted electric shower sounds like a small engine trying to start an a cold winters day, we could hear others as the sound travelled through the walls. The beds had dubious mattresses, we both sank into the middle. We booked into the restaurant and had a drink in the bar before. The pub was very pleasant with a good selection of beers. The restaurant had a good choice of pub fare and al a carte. The food was fantastic, great quality and generous portions, we were so impressed with the food we booked for a second night. If the owners took as much care of the hotel as the chef does with the food you would have a great place to stay.

"Thank you"

stellabella73, falmouth 04/05/2017

This place was a great find when a reservation in Bath let us down on arrival. The staff smiled and welcomed us which was hugely needed after being let down elsewhere. Wish we new about this place sooner. Would definitely return if in area again . Fantastic value and hospitality.

"One night stay"

Ayesha M, Gillingham, United Kingdom 02/05/2017

Stayed here for one night for a hen weekend. Though the bathroom decor is dated, the beds were really comfortable. Staff are really friendly and helpful. The afternoon tea is really affordable and the sandwiches are delicious. We gave the staff some decorations to put in the room we were having afternoon tea in and they added their own bits to them too. Would definitely stay again.

"Quiet 1 Night Stay"

User 01/05/2017

Stayed here for one night for a quick and quiet weekend for bank holiday. I chose here because I wanted to stay near Castle Combe. It happens that this place is also near Bath. It was affordable and we had a car, so it was convenient for us to get around. We stayed in a "family room" which was a double bed and a single bed. Reception was nice and very kind. Shower, whilst was electric, was really good! The one downside to this, was that the pillows here aren't very nice. Even though I had 3 under my head, I got a terrible knot in my neck and shoulder. I couldn't turn my head the next day! So I would advise to stay here but bring your own pillows if you can!

"Great food but rooms not so good"

jonny5678, cheltenham 28/04/2017

A short notice break took us to the Compass Inn. The room was a bit run down with old mismatching furniture and mould around the bathroom. Walls paper thin so we were able to share the conversation with the lads next door. The food was good and the dining room and bar had a nice atmosphere. Good locals walks for those inclined.

"Very enjoyable stay"

Philip G, Doncaster, United Kingdom 26/04/2017

We stayed recently for one night in order to attend a family funeral. The place is easy to find. I see what people are saying about the decor and overall appearance, but at the end of the day I want a clean room with a comfortable bed and somewhere to have a bath/ shower. What is exceptional about this place is that all of the staff were polite, helpful, informative and cheerful. We had our dog with us and we were made to feel very welcome. We had a meal in the bar ( with said dog and two relatives) in the evening and I have to say that it was excellent. All the plates were wiped clean. The cost was very reasonable too. We finished off with a couple of cheese platters and instead of the usual couple of tiny slivers , we were treated to four generous and delicious hunks with plenty of biscuits and chutneys. Fortunately two other friends had arrived by then otherwise we would have been struggling to eat it all. The following day saw the wake held at the hotel and the buffet was way above average. Again the staff were very efficient and helpful. We would not hesitate to stay again should the need arise.

"Very disappointing"

timothy12016, Malmesbury, United Kingdom 20/04/2017

Met friends for lunch recently & found it disappointing. We have eaten there before but not for some time. We had to wait ages for our food although it was not busy. About 10 min after placing our order a waiter came to us & told us "we don't have any pork chops". The friend who had ordered them had to ask for the menu, while she was trying to choose an alternative, the waiter mentioned the specials board. We had not seen this at all. He said he had only just finished it! It was after 1pm! My friend chose another dish & was told"we don't have any chicken either" so she had to choose again. The food was ok although over cooked scampi & fish platter not as described. The room was unbearably hot. We asked for some ventilation & the patio door was opened for a short time but as a lady was sitting next to it she got cold & the door was closed. Why didn't they open a window? No one asked if the food was ok. Pleasant waitress but very indifferent service.

"Birthday weekend "

ells33, london 11/04/2017

We arrived Friday evening for my partners birthday, we upgraded to a suite and it was definitely worth it. A birthday card was left for my other half which was a lovely touch. The food was fabulous, dinner was delicious and great portions, we were ready to sleep after our massive meal, unfortunately we only stayed for 1 night as I would of loved to of tried more of their menu. The breakfast was excellent and staff were extremely friendly and welcoming so would definitely recommend

"Amazing Mothers Day Lunch!"

jinkybristol, bristol 29/03/2017

We have been to the Compass several times. Our son lives in Swindon and we live in Keynsham, so we regard this as halfway house! However, although we have always been satisfied with our meals, this time you surpassed yourselves!! The starters were superb, a sharing meat platter, huge prawn cocktail, and a sharing baked cheese platter, both platters with olives, gerkins and various other little touches. The roast, however was the best roast meal I have ever had in a restaurant, and I have had several! The roast potatoes were so crispy (not leathery as usual in pubs) the belly pork was beautifully tender, and there were numerous vegies, including cauli cheese. My husband had the salmon which he thoroughly enjoyed. My son opted for the fish and chips and said it was the best he had ever tasted. My daughter-in-law had the roast vegetarian option and we were both very peeved that we couldn't manage to eat all four of the roast potatoes! My grand-daughters helped my husband with his meat platter for their starter and then had chicken nuggets and chips. I could only manage icecream for a sweet, with a choice of 3 scoops from some mouth watering flavours, and my son and his wife shared a huge piece of sticky toffee pudding. We sat down at 12.30pm and by 1.30 the place was heaving, but the service stayed the same and the plates coming out of the kitchen looked just as good. Congratulations to kitchen and waiting staff alike for a fantastic job. To cap it off, we two Mums were given a polyanthus to take home, as we have had every year since we have been going to the Compass. The improvement in the food has been noted and you will be seeing more of us in fuure.

5029, Frome, United Kingdom 27/03/2017

We meet my daughter and family here often. It's a half way meeting point and we have never been disappointed. Yesterday, my daughter booked for Mothers Day Lunch at 2.30pm. It was really busy when we arrived but we were promptly shown to our table by helpful and friendly staff. The highchair for my baby granddaughter was already in place at the table and our order taken within a few minutes. The Sunday lunch here was amazing and plentiful. The tenderest cuts of meat served with a wide variety of vegetables and the crispest roast potatoes. Well done and many thanksto all the restaurant manager and all his lovely staff here for providing a wonderful service on what was a very busy afternoon. We will be returning very soon.

"One Night Stop Over"

Paul B, Leicester, United Kingdom 23/03/2017

One night with two adults and two children. If not very tired after a long journey we would not have actually stayed the night but with two young children we couldn't put them through the search for an alternate. Receptionist very pleasant - walk to the room started the alarm bells... dated decor, aged and damaged fire doors and worn carpets. The room a major disappointment. Damp and musty, cold, aged bed linen and a double bed so well worn that you rolled into the middle as the springs had gone. The bathroom had wires outside socket for shower (irony - this was for a power shower which had no power...), bathroom was of differing styles and colours and the room was a mixture of 80's and 90's decor - all dated and in need of repair. A spider wondering across the bed as we were settling the children really was the final straw. At checkout the receptionist did reduce our room bill by £30 when I complained but after a terrible nights sleep this was little in the way of recompense. We didn't take breakfast as it was £14 each and we found an excellent tea room less than five minutes away which fed the four of us (full English) for £20! I try to see the best and give positive reviews where I can about hotels when we stay away but I wouldn't recommend this hotel based on our stay.

"Epic room; gorgeously comfortable sleep"

Simon230773, Hitchin, United Kingdom 19/03/2017

No complaints - superb service and lovely room; lots of space and plenty of tea and coffee; bed was very comfortable and whole building was quiet throughout the night. Slept without any problems - would certainly visit again.

"A quick dinner"

steadyslack, Exeter, United Kingdom 22/11/2016

Booked a table for 6:30. We received a friendly welcome. Drinks took a while to arrive as was the order for food. Food was pleasant, a number of things on the menu unavailable. Desserts ok, not great. It's been a dozen years since I've been here and in my opinion the place has gone downhill which is a great shame.

"Lovely Sunday lunch"

Demelza1, Bristol 12/11/2016

We booked a table for a family meal . The staff were lovely and very polite . The food was great and plenty of it especially the cheese board. We had a problem with two meals not coming out but we were given free desserts and coffee . The staff were very apologetic .

"Sunday lunch"

Dragonsfan, Monmouthshire 06/11/2016

So much better than our last visit a year ago. All seems to be down to a new head chef and all 3 of us were impressed You won't be hungry afterwards and the beef I had was just right being a little bit pink. The belly pork chosen by my wife and daughter was also well cooked and very tasty. All the food was hot and the the vegetables not over cooked. The sticky toffee pudding was rather nice too. We will go again and hope for a little less delay with the wait for dessert and give an better rating again.

"Good food, but very dated decor"

E5134DLjohnc, Stalbridge, United Kingdom 30/10/2016

The staff were very friendly and the food quality was good - both breakfast and evening meal. Although it didn't spoil our stay, the only negative was the very dated decor. Tired dark furniture and Anaglypta wallpaper in the bathroom !! So very 1970's. Badly in need of a makeover.

"Good stop over just off motorway"

Andrew M, Airdrie, United Kingdom 26/10/2016

Good parking for cars and small type vans it was dark when i arrived and the lighting in car park is to to good this may put solo ladies off, no room for hgvs - vans with trailers may also find it hard if car park is busy . Beds good water hot internet good. Food good - had it in bar would like to see bigger plate as we are not all little eaters.

"Very pleasant stay with excellent service"

Marcyn21, Ilminster, United Kingdom 22/10/2016

We stayed at The Compass Inn for a couple of days in order to visit the surrounding attractions. We booked a Bed, Breakfast & Dinner package and arrived to find we had been upgraded to a very pleasant suite. We enjoyed the varied food menu both for breakfast and evening meals. The turnover of staff is low and it shows with excellent and attentive service.

"Needs an update"

Darren L, Bournemouth, England, United Kingdom 21/10/2016

Was on business in Gloucester but stayed here so I could catch the Bath Rugby Game (bath won ??). Great location for the M4 and only just 10 miles from town. I'm a best Western diamond card holder so stay in the chain all the time. I'm afraid the hotel falls below my expectations in terms of decor. The rooms are very tired with mold in the bathrooms. The stars I have given are for the staff who were friendly and helpful. Breakfast was OK, only ever have boiled eggs but the didn't have egg cups. Sorry but been in bettef

"Wish we'd had longer"

Julia7UK, East Midlands, UK 19/10/2016

We stayed here for only one night when we needed somewhere to stay near the M4. What a fortunate find it was! Nice comfortable room and the adjacent restaurant was a pleasant surprise with a varied menu and good service. The hotel was very helpful the following morning (amongst other things they lent us some scales with which to weigh our suitcase...). I just wish we'd had more time to explore the surrounding area - there's lots to do! Highly recommended.

"Enjoy the wonderful Best Western Compass Inn"

jeanniedave, Crawley 13/10/2016

The staff and facilities were excellent. The staff were very friendly and helpful and our en-suite room and the restaurant and breakfast room were lovely. The evening food was a good range and very enjoyable and the breakfast room was a different room and again very enjoyable.

"Wonderful experience"

S C, Aberystwyth, United Kingdom 10/10/2016

Highly recommend this Best Western. The staff are welcoming, friendly, caring and efficient. The bedrooms, (that we had) were clean, in good condition and very comfortable. The bar and restaurant had a great atmosphere, good variety of soft and alcoholic drinks. The dinner menu was very impressive and the food itself was gorgeous. (we went out for lunch). The only disappointment was the continental breakfast.. It is also in a lovely position, great for local walks, the Cotswold Way, Dyrham deer park and Bristol and Bath. We will be back!

"Great hotel"

rprice901, Braintree, United Kingdom 09/10/2016

Roger P Stayed here Oct. 2016, the room was warm and comfortable, facilities good. Bed slightly too short for me (I am 5ft 11ins tall) but spacious otherwise. Staff were polite and helpful and if we needed anything (such as extra toiletries) they responded quickly. Food was remarkably good, breakfast menu varied and wholesome and the cooked food good. The Dinner menu was varied for a hotel this size, the food well cooked and presented. Portions were large and plentiful. Bar area was spacious, and we met some friendly local people in it. All staff were polite, friendly and helpful. It's just off Junction 18 of the M4 and I'd recommend it highly. Thanks to all those who made our stay a memorable and enjoyable one.

"Great atmosphere "

Andy N, Suffolk, England 04/10/2016

I was here for a weekend on a BBQ training course (seriously - it was awesome!) the hotel is dated, wifi is very slow & some bits could use a freshen up BUT it adds to the character... the staff are brilliant in every way. It's not near anything really so you get the sense of a proper old coach house style place. I think it's family run too. I'd stay here again if in the area.

"Disappointed "

User 01/10/2016

On the way to the Mall in Bristol we decided to stop for lunch at the Inn. An unwashed ceasar salad with missing chicken and a over cooked children's pizza best sums up the food experience. We waited over half an hour for very simple food to arrive and the bill was on the high side. Next time I'll carry on to cribbs

"Ideal stopping point"

Robert P, St Austell, United Kingdom 29/09/2016

While travelling from South Cornwall to Cambridge we wanted a place to stop for rest , toilet & most of all something to eat . As this is almost half way of the journey I was the driver & at 73 thought this sounded just the spot as we avoid motorway type establishments like the plague. I enquired beforehand of the possibility of getting food around mid morning on a Sunday & got a reply by return that they would look forward to seeing us & food would be available upon request whatever the time . Upon arrival we where met with a welcome & served with Tea & Coffee & within 15 minutes had sandwiches containing thick rashers of Bacon & Sausage delivered to our table . The staff where so obliging & the price was very reasonable owing to time of morning. We also returned to have another meal upon our return back home & again where welcomed by different staff just as well . We would not hesitate to recommend this establishment or perhaps make a stop over in future . Thank you all .

"Just what was needed"

Nigel T, Rotherham, United Kingdom 18/09/2016

I was out delivering and needed a place to stay on Thursday 8th September. I looked on Google and The compass Inn came up. It was £85 which was really £25 over my budget allowance but had to take what was on offer. Anyway I was really pleased to have a very clean room in a very nice hotel. I also had a lovely burger and chips in the restaurant too. The best bit was I had a fabulous nights sleep so overall I have to say very good :)

"Leisure Break"

SimT77, Bristol, United Kingdom 17/09/2016

Had a lovely stay here at the start of September. Our room was very nice, and the bed was SO comfy. For dinner I had the Slow roasted Lamb which tasted amazing and my partner had the Belly pork which again got both thumbs up. The restaurant and bar staff were very friend and attentive, and when checking in and out, we were very well looked after. A hidden gem to stay and dine at whilst walking the Cotswold way. We will definitely be returning.

Jillslk, Northampton, United Kingdom 17/09/2016

We have just spent two nights at this fabulous hotel. To say the staff were helpful is an understatement. They all went out of their way to make our stay as comfortable as possible. Absolutely nothing was too much trouble. When we discovered that my husbands mobility scooter was too big to actually get into the hotel, John, the lovely reception manager came up with a solution straight away with no fuss or drama. The food was superb with orders taken by Francis, the restaurant manager, who was really knowledgeable about the local produce used in the kitchen. A special shout out to Penny, the owner, who made it her business to mingle with the guests - a lovely personal touch. Would we stay here again - a resounding YES!

I really liked this place. Yes, the stairs are squeaky and the carpet is worn in bits. If you're looking for a brand new corporate type place, best look elsewhere. But if you like charm and personal family like character, this is a great place. The staff was very good and the food was great. Part of the restaurant is like eating outdoors. I would certainly stay here again.

"Nope, nope, and nope!"

User 06/09/2016

We stay at best westerns pretty much all the time, and I would say this was by far the worst! We was given a 'superior room with a view', well if you count the wall being the view them I guess that's that! We were in the room for maybe 10 minutes before turning round and leaving. There was mound on the curtain netting, a constant annoying humming sound, and couldn't even access the wifi! For the amount we paid for, we expected much better. Definitely will not be returning in a hurry!

francescaharris, Bristol, United Kingdom 03/09/2016

Just wanted to congratulate Compass Inn on the standard of our meal. My friends and I have over the years met at Tormarton as the midway point. It was convenient. The food used to be at best adequate!!! NOW however, it's a game changer. Really delicious duck breast, perfectly cooked veg and I know my friends were equally raving about their dishes too. Well done chef! My only niggle was the rather steep price for a pint of lime and soda

"I night stay"

Brian D, Cardiff, United Kingdom 28/08/2016

* see note about SAT NAV at bottom. Booked using my Tesco clubcard points as wanted to visit Bristol and/or Berkeley castle. I think it was about £117 in real terms but about £38 in clubpoints ( x 3 with Boost) The room we were given looked comfortable and adequately furnished etc. except we could hear a constant droning noise from the window not unlike a ventilation/ boiler system. We've found this happens frequently when booking with Tesco Points ( Is this a policy of giving the most unpopular rooms ?) We reports this to staff on duty who felt it was the hum of traffic on the nearby motorway. Possible I suppose but not convinced as level of noise constant. Anyway we asked for a different room and were 'upgraded to a' a large family-type room which was very good and hardly any noise from outside ! We did find the corridors from reception to the rooms a bit 'whiffy' to say the least . I believe the carpets could do with a clean and 'freshening up' ! Having said all this we slept well, the breakfasts were cooked to order but cereals & fruit available too. I absentmindedly left my toiletry bag in the bathroom and I was pleased that after phoning from my home in Wales someone had found it and would keep it in reception till I passed again. Fortunately I was due to use the M4 a few days later and as it was only a 5 min detour to the hotel I collected it then. My wife and I stayed for a coffee break in one of the many lounge/dining areas and I would thoroughly recommend this as a good place to take a break from the M4 instead of the usual motorway services melee !! I will probably stop here for a coffee break in future. Oh I must mention that my SAT Nav sent me up a narrow country lane ( it apparently backs onto the hotel , I was told by landlord of nearby pub ! _) It would have been easy enough to spot on the main road had I been paying closer attention !!

"Stop Over"

Terri S, Stockport, United Kingdom 27/08/2016

Used this hotel as stop over between Devon and Manchester. Dog Friendly and the rooms were fantastic. The only problem with the dog friendly room 10 is it was near the public toilets and with a wedding on it made it a little noisy. The restaurant and bar are absolutely fantastic - and Ryan who served us was so friendly and made you feel very at ease. Would definitely recommend and use again. Feels a very family run hotel and bar.

"A very good hotel with excellent menu & good location"

Rovers1959, Blackpool, United Kingdom 24/08/2016

A great welcome and efficient booking in process, excellent food especially the Sirloin Steak on the special menu. Good breakfast cooked to order with variety of Continental items. Plentiful free car parking, good location. Overall a very good enjoyable stay on Business.

"Lunch with my wife & uncle"

Antony P, Midhurst, United Kingdom 12/08/2016

Unfortunately, my wife and my uncle has to use a wheelchair when going out. Upon arrival the staff gave us a very warm welcome and could not have been more helpful to our uncle's needs. The service and food were both excellent and we all thoroughly enjoyed our lunch at The Compass.

"Fantastic find"

KMcG68, tamworth 11/08/2016

I booked this at the last minute and with a hint of desperation, however turned out to be a fantastic find. It is a country pub as the name suggests but as a person that stays away on business a lot (5 nights in the last 15) this was the best night I have had for a long time. The room was a double it was really well equipped and comfortable, everything you could possibly need was in the room. The wifi didn't work in my room, however there was a help number I could have phoned if I cared enough but I was shattered so didn't bother. The staff were wonderfully helpfully without being over the top and I can't stress enoughhow great the food is. I had a 3 course meal last night and breakfast this morning and both were exceptional! This might have been a lucky find but I will certainly be staying here again. What a great place and a credit to the management.

"I go back time and again"

Mark W, Sheffield, United Kingdom 10/08/2016

Really nice hotel especially if working or visiting Chipping Sodbury (it's only about a 10 minute drive away). Great food, nice rooms, and lovely staff. Always happy to stay here (I'm on about my fourth trip here this year already!).

"Just Great"

phil J, Liverpool 09/08/2016

We used this as an overnight stop-over - First things first, when it claims to be less than a minute from the M4 - it really is, but frankly once you arrive it feels like you are in the middle of nowhere - just what you want. It advertises itself as an inn, but really offers hotel quality throughout. Brilliant staff, nice spacious and clean room and generally all round great place. Corridor decor is a bit 80's but it is not shabby or unkempt - just been around a bit. It has amazing and extensive grounds - I am not sure the bars etc. have been designed to make the best of them, but there are loads of places to sit, chill and even room for the kids to kick a ball around without bothering other guests. We ate in the restaurant which has a great al-fresco feel created by vines growing under a huge glass roof - I get the feeling that it used to be an outside courtyard that has been cleverly converted. Food was plentiful and reasonably priced - they even managed to make a dish of green beans look really appetising (and taste good too). Would happily return

"Overnight Stay"

Derek S, Bury St. Edmunds, United Kingdom 08/08/2016

Overnight stop on way from Cornwall back to Suffolk. Very close to M4 was attraction. Hotel was rather old fashioned. Service could be slow. Evening dinner was excellent and good value for money. Room large, bed comfortable but bathroom very small and dated.

"Overnight Stay"

299misterf, Grimsby, United Kingdom 03/08/2016

Pre booked a twin room with breakfast for 2nd/3rd August, the price was very reasonable, the room was excellent, very clean with all the mod cons, the breakfast was cooked fresh and very filling, I would recommend the compass inn if your visiting chipping sodbury or Yate and is also handy for Bath/Bristol and Longleat.

Natoma519, San Rafael, California 01/08/2016

In general, the hotel and the room were OK but the corridor between reception and guest rooms smelled of a cross between urine and bug spray. Also, our room did not have enough electrical outlets to charge our phones. I had onion rings which were battered to heavily. Green veggies were very good (but I did tell the waitress ahead of time that if they were overdone, I'd send them back). Breakfast was very good. I thought the hotel was overpriced for what we got.

"In need of some updating"

Sue K, Mombasa, Kenya 28/07/2016

We had booked a single and family room, the latter definitely appeared rather 'tired' and in need of some tlc. Small points 3 people booked, but only 2 towels in the bathroom, no spare toilet roll. We ate dinner which was absolutely delicious and the public areas were much more presentable. Personally I would prefer the option of child free areas as after a long journey, not much fun to sit with children running around you - fine in the garden, not inside. Breakfast was 'to order' and not a huge choice. Previous Best Western we stayed at had many more options. Overall, not bad but has the potential to be so much better

"Relaxed & Relaxing experienced"

Geoff L, HIgh Wycombe, United Kingdom 27/07/2016

This is a friendly, family-run hotel who really care about their customers. I stayed overnight and the following day. I received great service throughout the whole.time. This last sentence is purely to fulfil TripAdvisors silly rules about 200 chars!!

"Drivning to Wales lunch"

User 18/07/2016

Near M4 but very relaxing of the motorway place. Good pub food and fresh salad. White napkins and a good selection of ales. Sitting in the conservatory and relaxing is a real treat before heading to the busy road again!! Free wifi is a bonus!! Clean restrooms.

"Not very pleasant"

peteknapton, Witney, United Kingdom 12/07/2016

We turned up to find there was a wedding booked in our room although spacious backed on to an open area and we had kids running around playing in the area banging into the French Windows and trying to look in to the room , not very pleasant , in the evening the bar maid seemed to be on another planet Verypoor service I had the belly pork which was bland and tasteless , we left in the morning with me feeling unwell and went straight home then I had 2 days of illness to follow Not pleasant and definately would not return here very disappointed at £200+ for the night it wasn't cheap either

"Great hotel"

User 09/07/2016

Stayed here for one night as close to Castle Combe race track. This is a good hotel with plenty of parking. We booked a family room and had plenty of space and comfy beds for us and our son. The room and hotel part of the building is a little dated but ok. For the price of the room, it would have been good if water in the mini bar was free. We ate in the orangery restaurant in the evening. I had the belly pork which was delicious. Overall food very good and not too bad price. Shame service was slow. Had breakfast in the morning. Service for cooked breakfast was slow but delicious again when it arrived. The waitress did apologise which was good. Proper hollandaise sauce on my eggs benedict, really delicious! Very good selection of fruit, cereals and pastries. Overall we would definitely stay here again as this is a good hotel in a very good location.

"Great Location, good service and comfortable accommodation."

matkincc, Rugby, United Kingdom 03/07/2016

This hotel is a typical country style inn offering comfortable rooms, good food with a friendly service. We enjoyed an overnight stay whilst attending a Family Party but enjoyed a evening snack and wine in the large restaurant and a great breakfast. There are several local walks (The Cotswold Way) near the hotel and the M4 is less than a mile away. My only criticism would be that the inn is used by local people and several drinkers were using foul language in the bar area.

"Lovely and Quiet"

J0n965, Scunthorpe, United Kingdom 29/06/2016

We stayed for just one night. The hotel is set well back from the main roads and was so quiet overnight, very good for a good night sleep. The rooms were well equipped and we had a very large and very comfy bed. The staff were very friendly and helpful. We did not eat here as we arrived late but used the bar and this we so quaint. There was suitable choice for breakfast but at £12.50 each we found it a bit overpriced. This hotel really is a hidden gem for anybody staying in the area.

"Overpriced & Underwhelmed"

BuffShuff, Somerset, United Kingdom 27/06/2016

We stayed here as our family had booked a function here. I cannot honestly say we would pick this place otherwise. We could not easily find this place on a first attempt, it is down a narrow country road without obvious singage. After checking in, we were directed back along the length of the building to find our room. We encountered very narrow hallways full of old knick knacks, at one point we encountered a some horrendous wood panelling, and we knew what would be ins tore for our room! The walls had recently been papered, but the bathroom was something out of the 70's. the flooring had been discoloured and was a shade of yellow, instead of the grey that appeared behind the toilet! There was a couple of dead bugs in the bath as well! The bed wasn't horrendous, infact this was easily the best bit of the stay. We were awoken just before 8am, buy the cleaners (we found out after that the laundry room was 2 doors down from us) who were far from being quiet. Breakfast was a shabby affair, no milk or butter on the tables- the only butter was at the buffet table WITHOUT a knife with which to cut it- no napkins, VILE coffee that tasted like it had been sat on the hotplate for hours! The food was fine, but bog standard. and for the privilege? £12. extortion really- as we were told that breakfast was included in the room rate, only on check out did we discover otherwise!!!! This is a long review, and congrats if you have made it this far; essentially what i am saying is, if you have someone paying for you then this place is fine, but i would not spend my hard earned wages here again.

"Unable to recommend this hotel"

palser2016, Wirral, United Kingdom 26/06/2016

Had a 2 night stay last week. Ground floor Room clean, comfortable and well appointed. Despite complaining twice to Reception, Wi-Fi in room, would not work on any of our 3 devices. Only able to access Wi-Fi in the dining rooms/reception area on my iPad the first evening (after many attempts to sign-in), but able to get Wi-Fi on my phone both days. My wife could not get Wi-Fi at all. We had dinner in the restaurant both evenings, and we were impressed with the presentation and quality of our meals. However, the experience at our first breakfast was abysmal. On entering the breakfast room at 8:10, no staff were visible, most of the tables had not been cleared, no cereal bowls or bread/toast plates, no pastries, the orange juice dispenser almost empty, only 1 glass, and lastly nothing had been replenished. My wife went to reception to get some service, and a member of staff eventually appeared and offered coffee and asked if we wanted a cooked breakfast. We said we would both like the continental breakfast, if she could bring the china and more orange juice. We were disappointed to receive a cup of coffee rather than a pot, and no offer of a refill. By the time we left the room, no attempt had been made to clear the tables or replenish the cold food. Finally, whilst we accept that it is hotel policy to allow pets, we were surprised to find, on both evenings for several hours, that a gentleman, who did not appear to be a hotel guest, sitting in the bar was accompanied by a dog lying beside him on the bench seat - very unhygienic due to close proximity to people eating in the dining room and possibly dangerous to anyone allergic to animal hair who may later sit there. Overall the appearance, service and attitude of most of the Compass Inn staff, was below that we have ever experienced in many similarly sized B.W. hotels, where we have stayed in the past.

"A Great Find!"

ArgyJones, Bridgend 18/06/2016

I'd never stayed here before, so I was pleasantly surprised by the overall quality of my stay. Great location just off the M4. Very nice hotel, great staff. The meal I had in the restaurant was the best I've had in a hotel in years! I will be back!

"Business hotel, a bit tired"

ryan c, Norwich, United Kingdom 14/06/2016

Found our room at the end of a rabbit warren corridor, plenty large enough so we could spread all of our luggage out and prepare for our next day walking. Comfortable bed, large breakfast room with food selection and staff helpful and friendly. Didn't stay long enough to experience bar or restaurant as went in to Tormarton for the evening, but overall does what it is supposed to do.

"Feel refreshed after a good night's sleep?"

CdreJohn, Winchester, England, United Kingdom 09/06/2016

At supper, nothing arrived as we had ordered - we wanted medium teak but were brought over-done steaks; my wife ordered the ice-creams sweet, stressing she did not like strawberry ice cream, yet one scoop was strawberry. The waitresses at supper were not attentive to what we were ordering; they did not write down our orders seeming to have other things on their mind. Our waitress at breakfast was good. The bedroom was OK , but the drinking glasses in the bedroom were plastic. We mentioned all this to the receptionist who gave us a rebate. A 2-star establishment, maybe, but hardly 3-star. Our guide at Badminton house was equally dismissive.

"Quiet Sunday night"

Ian F, N Ireland 06/06/2016

Booking in earlier the room was clean and tidy. The hotel was quiet all facilities were available. The food was reasonable both in taste and price. It is clearly a local pub some guests had dogs. the only comment I would add is the young lad never washed her hands after handling the dog water bowl.

"We were not disappointed"

Vandownbuytheriver, Holland, Michigan 21/05/2016

We arrived after hiking south bath on the cotswolds way, and as we booked online, we were not disappointed. The hotel is small, quite and set away from the main road. Breakfast was great and set you up for the day. All in all, a good night's stay!

"Just right for us!"

Bathman, Leeds, United Kingdom 18/05/2016

A two-night stay while visiting Bath: we wanted to be out of the city with its exorbitant prices, and this was an ideal jumping-off point. Signs to the residents' car-park were... idiosyncratic, we ended up entering through a warren of rooms before someone emerged from a bar to escort us to Reception (which could have been better signposted). Check-in went well, although it was quite a long trek along a corridor and up several steps to our room - which when we got there was very comfortable, and well-presented. Breakfast was good, although on the second morning one of the servers didn't really seem "with it" and we had to ask for our order to be taken. But compared with the rest ofd our stay, this was only a minor niggle.

"Good location, beautiful surroundings, good service, but in need of some TLC"

John T, London, United Kingdom 16/05/2016

Whilst this popular hotel has it's good points, it could be much improved by some desperately needed TLC to upgrade the interior, and rooms. That said, whilst somewhat dated, the rooms are comfortable, the food is good, and the current chef caters well for special diets, and the overall service was good. The hotel also is close to the highway, and within 30 minutes of several major cities. Whilst the free WiFi has improved it is still incredibly slow.

"good food and service"

filligirl, Wales 14/05/2016

Came here for lunch with family. food was well cooked and we all enjoyed our meals. There was plenty to chose from. The surroundings were very pleasant. Service was good. Just enough attention to make sure we were OK and had every thing we wanted without being intrusive in any way. We were not hurried in any way and were able to take our time. Would return here for a meal again.

"Oh dear"

rachelique, South Shields 13/05/2016

Good points: The location was very handy for me attending an event nearby - so I missed the city traffic. And it's so easy to get to from the motorway. The location was the main reason I booked this hotel after reading mixed reviews. And it has a restaurant which is useful when you are travelling for business so you don't have to worry about where you are going to eat. Restaurant food was really good - with lots of choice - and bar had good range of drinks. The room itself was quite spacious but had dated decor, but that didn't bother me. Unfortunately there were quite a few things really let this place down. Bad points: The bed was really uncomfortable! It sank in the middle and you could feel the springs. Also, it was really low to the floor and made it look like you were trying to sleep on a camp bed in someone's sitting room. Bedding felt worn and well used! Shower in the morning was cold. And no hot water from the taps. I heard someone else complain about this at reception and they were told that lots of people were using it at the same time. I had a shower before 6am and the system couldn't cope with it. Not good. The chair in the room smelt like dog. The free wifi in the room was well received - but then it signed me out and when I tried to sign back in it told me I was already signed in but then I was signed out... and I got stuck in this loop. I eventually gave up as it was too late. A couple of incidents at breakfast really put me off my food. There was an ant crawling on the continental breakfast table and when my partner went to get toast, he found mould on the white bread... and then mould on the brown bread. The waiter did change the bread, but I think we were a bit put off by this. Also, there was no butter out, and everyone kept asking for butter, so the poor waiter had to keep going into the kitchen to get it. There must be an easier way! As I had to leave early, my partner raised the issues with the member of staff at reception. She was interested in hearing about the chair but she didn't say anything about the lack of hot water. Also, she didn't give him a chance to tell her about breakfast. Overall, not a great experience, but hopefully it can be fixed!

"like a cheap seaside hotel from the70's"

midlandsbm, Derbyshire, United Kingdom 12/05/2016

Shocking for the price. Poor, worn out decor, creaky floors and thin walls. Much better off in a premier inn or travel lodge. Stayed one night on business and all i ask is a comfortable nights sleep and hot water in the morning! unfortunately they couldn't manage the hot water bit. only stay here if its half price or free.

"Brilliant Sunday Lunch"

Jeff W, Minehead 12/05/2016

My wife and I have had some very good meals here but last Sunday the really cam up trumps. We were searching for a venue to take my wifes mother now 93 and a friend both of whom are not large eaters. We decided to call the Compass to ask wether or not they could help out asking maybe the had childrens meals and were genuinely surprised and delighted to learn that the chef was willing to plate up to smaller meals at an appropriately smaller price problem solved. When the meals roast lamb arrived everyone had a decent looking meal just right for them and without anyone feeling that they were different. VERY IMPROTANT to a lot of people when for whatever reason they find they cannot handle large meals and don't like sending food back. AND MOST IMPROTANT THE LAMB AND THE REST OF THE MEAL WAS TO DIE FOR. We had sweets and coffee and the meal and get together was enjoyed in a relaxed and convivial surroundings. Perfect!!!!

"Lovely location, good food and service"

CossyWombat, Diani Beach, Kenya 06/05/2016

The regular menu was very good and extensive, the specials even better. We had a thoroughly enjoyable and un-hurried lunch in the covered garden area which is lovely. The service was attentive but not invasive. A nice place to stop for lunch. We did not experience the hotel or dinner.

"Good location, average hotel"

User 21/04/2016

The hotel is located in a good position not far from the M4, the bar and food were very good but I found the restaurant to be very dated with ripped chairs etc. The wifi signal in the rooms was so low it was unusable but the bed was comfortable.

"Good for the price"

Casillero_del_Diablo, Rugby, United Kingdom 18/04/2016

Nothing exciting about this hotel, very average. Shower was alright, the bed was comfortable and the service was average. Not sure if we were booking this hotel if there were many other options around.

"Tucked away in a convenient spot"

User 11/04/2016

My daughter and I stayed for a weekend in this very conveniently located, away from the hustle and bustle of the city mayhem hotel. It wasn't pre-booked and we didn't know what to expect but pleasantly surprised. Our intention was to stay for one night but we extended it to two nights. Receptionist was very welcoming and pleasant (they all were!). It is a properly run small hotel; our room was spacious, very clean and comfortable. There is a restaurant and a pub but we didn't have time to explore neither of them. There is plenty of space to park your car, easily accessible, pleasant staff, easy to find, clean, comfortable and within an attractive price range. This is exactly what I would expect to find in any accommodation. A big thank you.

"Great location"

shakey966, Woodbridge, United Kingdom 10/04/2016

A very well located hotel, it was close to the M5 and only 15 min drive into bath. The hotel staff were friendly and the food was excellent. i would definitely return if going back to the area. Not the most modern or "branded" hotels but this enabled a uniqueness about it that gave it plenty of character

"Loved it"

Mblacker, Chulmleigh, United Kingdom 10/04/2016

We came here for the first time as a quiet weekend break without the children. We booked with our Tesco reward vouchers and were unsure what to expect as we had stayed at a Best Western hotel in January which we were very disappointed with. Not so this time. The staff and manager were extremely helpful,.the room was excellent, very large( we had a superior room), well appointed, and very quiet. Although this hotel is just a stone's throw from the M4, it felt like we were out in the country. We didn't have an evening meal, but breakfast was good- a lovely selection, and cooked to order. This was an ideal spot to stay to visit Bath. We are already talking about a return visit and we have only been home a few hours!

Col876, Woodbridge, United Kingdom 05/04/2016

Very Highly recommended small family run hotel. Very friendly, helpful and courteous staff and Proprietor. Fantastic delicious home cooked food. Roasts very highly recommended. Rooms very spacious and well appointed. Just off the M4 although far enough not to hear the noise. About 15mins drive to Bath and just down the road from Badminton. Really lovely stay and will be going back sometime

"Wedding "

BeckyWhitehead, Bristol, United Kingdom 05/04/2016

Myself and my Husband recently held our wedding breakfast and evening do here. We couldn't fault the venue, the staff, the rooms, the food or the bar. Emily and Penny were incredibly helpful throughout the planning and ensured the day ran smoothly as we planned. The orangery is such a beautiful room, helped by the sunshine we were lucky to have all day. We were served a 3 course wedding breakfast which was great and all the guests states how lovely there food was. The bridal suite we stayed in was lovely, lots of room two TVs, patio doors , all in all very comfortable. I can highly recommend this venue for a wedding, evening do, party or just a evening meal. It's a great location, staff are friendly, food is great and if you need to stop over the rooms are ideal too.

User 30/03/2016

Cannot fault in any single aspect, I chose to have two starters, The chicken scewers with satay were amazing, followd by the pan fried squid wity chilli and ginger which were just as awesome if not more!! Presentation and service were fabulous too. Will definately be stopping in again very soon.

"Reasonable hotel and location"

Brian T, Ipswich, United Kingdom 14/03/2016

We stayed at this hotel using Tesco vouchers. The room was a twin and was very acceptable. We slept well and it was quiet. We were visiting Bath and the location just off of the M4 was ok for us. The room was clean and tidy and had all we needed. However, the hotel bar wasn't very appealing. We didn't eat at the hotel so can't comment on the food.

"Friendly Staff throughout"

familywatts2015, Swansea County, United Kingdom 06/03/2016

Pretty Standard Best Western type accommodation, so all fine there. Very Nice bar area, serving real ales that are well kept. Excellent bar food. All staff, were exceptionally helpful and friendly. Will us this place in future when in the area.

"This was once a nice stopover .... what has happened?"

scrabgal1, Bristol, United Kingdom 01/03/2016

For several years now we have stopped at this Pub for lunch on our way back from London. However, today was a big disappointment. Sat at a table in the conservatory and waited .. and waited ... In the end I got up to try and find some waiting staff to get a menu. It eventually arrived and my husband ordered roast beef on brown bread only to be told after a while that there was no brown bread. He then opted for the broccoli and stilton soup which when it arrived was quite a bright yellow with a vague hint of stilton (the pea and ham soup with stilton thrown in?). The had another wait for the bill. Looking around the place needs a good makeover. The chairs in the conservatory have seen better days and the very offhand staff could do with some customer service training, especially the 'waiter' in the grubby T-shirt with a long ponytail. Don't think well rush back there. What a shame as this was a very convenient midday halt. We did not stay over night.

"Very pricey for very mediocre stay...."

Naomi-Anne, Hastings, United Kingdom 29/02/2016

I stayed in this hotel with my fiance as a cheaper alternative to staying in central Bath, we took advantage of the Tesco offer and I paid £20 for an upgrade. I'm very glad we did that, as had I have paid the full £120 for the night I would not have been happy! The Hotel looks very nice from outside, especially welcoming on a dark night. We entered from the back and walked through the hotel to get to reception, staff were friendly enough. We stayed in room 40, the room was warm and clean and the décor was modern in the room, the bathroom was incredibly dated with blue lino and a yellow lino floor. The shower was hot and high pressure. The beds were comfy enough, though were 2 singles pushed together. We left the heater on low as it was a very cold night. I woke freezing in the night and the heater was off and would not heat up again. I looked for a blanket and there wasn't one. I had to put my jumper on! The main reason this gets a 2 star for me was the service and the awful breakfast we had. I chose to pay the extra £25 at time of booking for the breakfast and it was pitiful. We arrived into the restaurant at about 09:45am there were 2 other people in there, there was a very limited selection of cereals, yoghurt that looked none too appetising and a fruit platter which looked like it had seen better days. We had a cooked breakfast, I asked for simple poached eggs on toast and my fiancé had a full cooked breakfast. It was awful, I am far too british and I never complain (to be fair, I didn't complain) but I should have. The toast was black, burnt to a crisp...the fried eggs were browned and discoloured from being cooked in old fat and the beans looked liked they'd been sat in their dish for a week. I was kinda baffled to be honest, that anyone would serve that! The waitress was nice enough, but there was the two of us, another couple and a family of four and the service took forever! While we were leaving I also saw the two kitchen staff who looked pretty unkempt both smoking at the kitchen door and I saw one of them spit... nice! I'm glad I didn't complain about my food!

"good food good room"

I stayed here on buisness, my only complaint is the tv is too far away from the bed, this seems to be common theme in hotels these days though, I had the rump of lamb for my dinner, this was one of the best meals i have ever eaten, breakfast a bit pricey for what you get, a lovley quiet room with a heater that works well and a powerfull shower,

"Sad to see the demise of what was once an iconic gastro pub and hotel"

Malcolm32, Melbourne, Australia 22/02/2016

This was a nostalgic visit to one of my favourite Rnglish Pubs en route to London during a business visit to UK. I ordered a Cheese Sandwich with red onion, celery and mayonnaise with side salad. 3 minutes later I received probably the worse sandwich I have ever seen in my life containing a sprinkling of tasteless waxy grated cheese in cheap and nasty mass produced bread. No red onion, no celery and no mayonnaise. I returned it asking for what I had ordered.m2 minutes later the sandwiches came back with no more cheese and no more than a teaspoon of mushy gunk on top of the cheese!! I will not be returning on future visits. Best Western you need to get your act together. Little wonder the place is virtually empty

"Cute quaint hotel but lacking in areas"

User 17/01/2016

We had booked the hotel for a business meeting. The first impression is one of amazement as its not what you expect when you are looking for a best western hotel. It more looks like an old pub and it's easy to park in the pub car park by mistake. The meeting room was ok but it was very cold. The heating wasn't on or wasn't working and most of the day we were there with our jackets on and warm woolly jumpers. A second criticism was also that the staff were not very attentive and there was no one checking in whether we wanted some new refreshments or anything else. Lunch was ok but it wasn't anything that would be remembered. It was, in my view, mediocre at best. Cannot comment on the rooms but for meetings I doubt we will book it again.

"Average hotel in good location"

CyndyLondon, London 16/12/2015

Stayed here for one night. Comfortable and clean room and most important for me very quiet even though it is close to M4. However the food was a let down. I had fish and chips. The fish itself was nice but the batter was soggy and greatest fault of all they put the fish on the chips which made the chips soggy too. My husband and daughter had sausages and mash. Sausages were dry and both said the sausages needed something else like onions with it. Breakfast was awful. We had to keep asking for things, is tomato sauce, clean cutlery. Fruit was non existent as it hadn't been replenished. The fried breakfast tasted as if it had been warmed up and the bacon was burnt. It wasn't cheap either - we paid £12 extra for breakfast. Had to wait for check out as the receptionist was having a meeting with one of the staff. Th experience was disappointing because the hotel bedrooms were nice, location superb and hotel itself very pretty with ample parking. Need to improve on the food and it would be very good.

It always gives me much pleasure when I can say something good about a meal out, after all when we are paying for a meal we expect to get not just value for money but that little extra that makes the experience just a little bit special. The friendly welcome is a good start, and reasonable personal service is another factor. We have had these before which has made our meal enjoyable. Sadly neither were in evidence when we went for a meal lunchtime today December 16 2015 at the Best Western The Compass Inn, where my wife and I met up with her sister and husband. Being a lunchtime especially early (12 noon) we have got used to being the first ones to get there, however the welcome was completely off-handed and then to have to go out of the restaurant to ask for someone to serve us was not what one expects. The menu, when it finally arrived, was filled with what I believe in the publishing trade is called white space, that it there was minimal choose and what was on there was expensive. As it happened the choice each of us made was nicely presented and very tasty. Sadly for me that is the only good thing I can say about our lunchtime get together before Christmas. So completely different to the last time we four had a meal there. It is not a place to which we will return!

"In need of tlc"

nicola f, Rowlands Castle, United Kingdom 09/12/2015

Stayed here for a couple of nights, and whilst the location is handy, the building pretty to look at, it's not a great hotel. It was clean and the staff were friendly but for me that's were the good stops. The rooms were very dated, with paper hanging off the wall. The room was especially cold and the bed was uncomfortable. Wouldn't rush to book again especially for the price I paid. But if you need a good location and a clean hotel this will suffice.

"Needs improvement"

Mel72, South West UK 08/12/2015

Apart from the lovely female member of staff wearing black, the rest of the staff looked grubby and unkempt, particularly the man with very long dark hair who was wearing a dirty shirt. The table was dirty when we sat down. Food was good however. The toilets need attention.

stumaccers, wiltshire england 29/11/2015

We popped in for breakfast. Slack staff, dirty toilets, overpriced food (£8 for a rubbish bacon sandwich on sliced white bread), very average coffee. I certainly wouldn't want to stay here based on this.

"Annual Dinner"

Johng59, Bristol, United Kingdom 28/11/2015

I was fortunate enough to be invited to the annual dinner of The south Gloucestershire Tories! This was a very happy occasion particularly this year due to the election successes. The Hotel catered well for this event and were very friendly and hospitable. The food on occasions such as this when mass catering is involved, becomes what I would call "School Dinners" however these days we are seeing more and more establishments being able to provide with advance ordering very good quality food. This is one of these establishments and the food was great well served and presented, washed down with copious supplies of wine, enjoyed by all who attended and enhanced even more by the speech from the recently elected MP who gave an exceptional after dinner speech. You don't have to be a Tory to enjoy the delights of this Best Western Hotel, They will serve other political parties and non political persons as well so please go and enjoy the food and hospitality.

"Best Western Compass Inn, Badminton"

Frances D, Berkhamsted, United Kingdom 14/11/2015

A country inn with character set in pretty surroundings yet convenient to the motorway and close to Bath, Bristol and Cotswold attractions. Nice decor and comfortable accommodation, excellent food and very friendly, welcoming staff. Overall very good value for money.

"Promised So Much But A Real Let-down"

Ivor W, Coventry, United Kingdom 06/11/2015

We stayed here for a few nights at the end of the May over the Late Bank Holiday Weekend. Basically, the problem was insufficient staff of duty. Meal service got slower and slower each night. We did not always got what we ordered, and items were missing on some of the courses. The staff were so obviously rushed, and kitchen production seemed very slow too. Sunday Breakfast was straight out of "Fawlty Towers" with one man on duty who clearly had NO system and was overwhelmed. Several folk walked out without being served. On leaving, we raised these issues, and were simply told it was hard to get staff to come over a Bank Holiday. Our room was pleasant and spacious enough; the garden was relaxing; but dog walking was not allowed in the adjoining field as there were lambs there. It would have been good to have been told before we arrived. It is a lovely rural area and we had some delightful places to visit nearby.

"Great buffet lunch"

AcepilotWinchester, Winchester 03/11/2015

We have visited this place many times. The staff are always pleasant and the location if convenient for meetings. I am pleased to ay the buffet lunch was exceptional with lots of tasty (and good variety of) sandwiches chips and hot and cold drinks. There was plenty to go round. My only grumble would be that the meeting room was cold.

"Thank you"

GAKay, Bristol, United Kingdom 28/10/2015

Many thanks to the staff who helped us at the weekend when we had a punctured tyre on the M4. Everyone was very friendly and the coffee and a phone was just what we needed- thanks. Love the fire. Very cosy. The hotel looked very nice- perhaps we will stay next time!

"Chef's night off"

MiddlesexEm, Beaminster, United Kingdom 14/10/2015

Having read all the great reviews, we were looking forward to our evening meal whilst on an overnight stay here. It was our misfortune to dine in the head chef's absence. There was a very limited menu with no specials board. We overheard a member of the restaurant team inform another customer/guest that the assistant/trainee chef was running the kitchen; with a mate! I am sure he was working hard, but was presumably out of his depth. Other guests returned meals and drinks. We had a crucified burger and salmon drowned in sauce. Given the noticable absence of the owners or any kind of management figure so highly praised in previous reviews for the entire duration of our (allbeit) overnight stay; I saw little point in complaining. The meal should have come out of the kitchen 'right first time', sending it back would onlynhave added to everyones stress. On a positive note - rooms were spotless and the staff pleasant.

"Fantastic Hospitality"

cgp71, Tamworth, United Kingdom 09/10/2015

Having stayed at the Compass on business for over 2 months I cannot praise Penny and her staff highly enough. Rooms always clean and comfortable but the bonus with this hotel is the staff as you feel your are home from home. Special mention must go to Frank, Emily, Nick and Hugo (sorry if ive missed anyone). Their customer service, excellent restaurant and bar facilities, housekeeping and general feel from this hotel makes it a must stay if you are in this area. A hidden gem. I hope to be returning with work in the new year and really look forward to staying in this fantastic place again. Regards to everybody Phil and Charlotte Parker.

"Best Best Western near Cotswolds"

Nesco, Austin, Texas 02/10/2015

If you want comfort, hospitality, warmth and a great landscape, this is the place. From the beginning you feel the staff being just wonderful from morning till evening. The owner, a beautiful lady, makes you feel very welcome and goes out of her way to make you feel important as a guest. The pub is a fine place to finish off your evening. Breakfast is plentiful and better than most Best Western we have stayed in. They even have a breakfast menu if you don't care for the buffet. We just love this hotel (for the second time) and plan to visit again soon

"Friendly, comfortable, needs a little tlc."

TravellerMartin, London, United Kingdom 26/09/2015

What makes the Compass stand out is the friendly staff. I only had one night here but was looked after very well. Even giving us a lift to and from some friends nearby. You don't get that kind of helpful service nowadays. The room was basic and comfortable. No noise from the road. Breakfast was great. It did need a little modernising but I will happily return even if no decorating is done. Thanks Penny and the team.

"Characterfull Country Hotel"

Quintin C, Manchester, United Kingdom 25/09/2015

If you're looking for a hotel void of personality and character with apparent sterile appearance reminiscent of soviet architecture then keep looking. The Best Western Compass Inn has character personality and friendly staff. The rooms are well presented and very comfortable with surprising WiFi speed. Staff are helpful and the bar and restaurant is somewhere that I would happily return to if I'm ever in the area again. Dining in the Orangery is a nice touch.

"Great food, poor accomodation"

User 22/09/2015

Booked in ahead of business meeting the following day. At a long drive to get here to be greeted with room 11 which consists of a pull down double bed and an ensuite which is in poor condition. is amazing!!!! Visit but don't stay.

"Great Food"

Richard S, Swindon, United Kingdom 22/09/2015

Called in here on the off chance on a Sunday for lunch. We had not booked but got a table straight away. The roast lunches were some of the best we have ever had both for quality and quantity the service was good too.
