Our room smelled like cigarette smoke. When I mentioned this upon check in and asked for a different room, the receptionist said it was late and there wasn't anything she could do except spray the room. I then mentioned my pregnancy and that it was a health concern, not to mention we have a toddler. Same answer, but she would put a note in for staff the next day. The next day it was the same experience except the receptionist was rude, had zero sympathy, and said there was nothing she could do, that booking wouldn't do anything and if I cancelled there wouldn't be any sort of compensation, despite health concerns. I spoke with booking and they said the property was being uncooperative. Booking gave me some credit which was appreciated. We did not stay another night. CLEANLINESS: Again the room smells like cigarette smoke. It needs an actual professional cleaning. Spraying more chemicals does not get rid of chemical smoke and it is a health concern for those paying for non smoking rooms. Showers had signs of the pink bacteria (serratia marcescens) on the door tracks and shower flowers were stained. AMENITIES: Mostly worked. The fridge, microwave, and coffee were fine. The TV did not connect. We had to screen share which was fine. BREAKFAST: Normally these breakfasts are just fine. Waffles, eggs, sausage... The eggs here were a bit gritty
"Look elsewhere if you want a good night's sleep"
The good: we only stayed one night The not-so-good: I've stayed at a number of best westerns and this was by far the worst. Even though it appears to be recently renovated, you can tell it was cheaply done. The lighting is harsh (think hospital lighting), the sound-proofing is totally lacking. We arrived at 8pm to check-in, and despite being a diamond select, we were given probably the worst room in the hotel - room 101 - right next to the lobby on the first floor. Front desk seemed to indicate this was the only room available. We were too tired to argue. The room is one of the rooms closest to the highway, and you can also hear everything from next door as well as upstairs. The a/c unit is v loud so we turned it cold before bed so we could turn the unit off when we slept. The soundproofing is so bad that I can hear the a/c unit in the next room cycling on and off - despite me wearing ear plugs. In the morning the footsteps from the room upstairs was so loud I thought someone came inside our room. The faucet in the sink is not even secured. We could lift the whole thing up. The shower stall looks unfinished. (See photos) I would not have been this upset if the price was cheaper. It was most certainly not worth how much we paid for our room. Breakfast is typical best western fare with scrambled eggs, sausages, biscuits and gravy for hot food. There is bread and bagels, oatmeal, yogurts and cereals, and make your own waffle. I'm sure there are better options to stay in Montrose and I would suggest you do so!
"Better than I expected based on other reviews!"
I was a little nervous booking this hotel after seeing other reviews, but I really have nothing to complain about after staying here for 2 nights. The room is a bit small and as many others have mentioned, the carpet needs replaced or a very good cleaning. (These are not even issues, and they certainly did not ruin my stay as it seems like it did for other travelers who have reviewed this property.) Otherwise everything was clean and seemed fairly updated. There are lots of shops and restaurants within a 10 minute drive, and the Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park is maybe 20 minutes away. I appreciated all of the outlets for charging and the mini fridge.
Thank you so much for taking the time to share your experience! We're thrilled to hear that your stay exceeded your expectations and that you found everything clean, comfortable, and well maintained. We're also glad you enjoyed our convenient location and appreciated the amenities in your room. We truly value your feedback and are always looking for ways to improve our guests' experience. It's wonderful to hear that you had an enjoyable two-night stay, and we hope to have the pleasure of welcoming you back again in the future!
"Decent- a few changes, and it would be so much nicer."
My husband and I typically do not stay at Best.Westerns, but we just returned from a trip and stayed at the Bryce Canyon Best Western Plus and it was one of the best hotel experiences I've had it a long time. So when we decided to see Black Canyon of the Gunnison, we thought this Best Western would be a good option. The good: nicely renovated rooms, comfortable pillows and plenty of towels. Clean pool. The bad: really dirty lobby and carpets throughout, doors that do not have a quiet close, so we heard slamming doors as early as six in the morning and as late as midnight. They really need to do something about that. The beds are very, very soft and my husband and I rolled to the middle. Housekeeping is not up to par. Upon a arrival into the room, there was hair on the sink, a dried contact lens on the floor, something sticky on the floor in front of the sink, and a smashed bug on the shower door handle. Breakfast tour was okay. Usual hotel breakfast. One suggestion is they should offer lemon water with cup in the lobby, that would be nice. They offer coffee, but I don't always want coffee 24/7. Management, please do something about the slimming doors.
Thank you for choosing to stay with us and for taking the time to share your experience. We're happy to hear that you enjoyed our renovated rooms, comfortable pillows, plentiful towels, and clean pool. We truly appreciate your kind comments about the positive aspects of your stay. We also appreciate the suggestions you shared that could help improve the experience for our guests. Your feedback is valuable to us, and we will certainly keep your comments in mind as we continue to make improvements. Thank you again for staying with us. We appreciate your business and hope to have the opportunity to welcome you back for a more enjoyable stay in the future. Sincerely, Best Western Montrose Inn
"Never again!"
They put me in the room by the stairs, 202, where you can hear every movement in the hotel. The door doesn't seal, so you hear everyone slamming their own doors closed all night long because I'm assuming, like mine, none of the doors in the hotel have self-closing hardware. Heard every conversation from people walking up and down the stairs and getting on and off the elevator. What a joke! Room smelled like cigarette smoke upon entrance even though it's a non-smoking hotel. The bed sheets and pillows had stains on them. That was the last straw. I demanded a different room that was clean, but you said you were sold out, called the manager, and said if I cancelled, I wouldn't get a refund. Funny, I checked your website after going back to my room and there were still rooms available. I was too tired of fighting you after a long trip, so I tried to sleep but such a noisy and uncomfortable stay in the prison cell of Best Western Montrose Inn, room 202, with the single, tiny window in the corner. I hardly slept a wink. The room, the staff, the hotel, all of it was horrible. Never again!
"⭐ 1 Star – BEWARE Before Staying Here – Unacceptable Room Conditions and No Support From Management or Corporate"
My husband and I have stayed at this hotel before, which is why we chose to return. Unfortunately, this experience was completely unacceptable. We checked into Room 211 at approximately 6:04 PM. After leaving for dinner and returning around 9:25 PM, we immediately noticed multiple serious issues: Dead bed bugs throughout the room (photos available with timestamps) A cell phone left next to the bed, showing the room had not been properly cleaned or inspected Sheets that were very obviously slept in Bedding that was disturbed and appeared to have been used by a previous guest We immediately reported these concerns to the front desk. Instead of taking the situation seriously, the employee dismissed our concerns, claimed the bugs were “box elder bugs,” and failed to address the other insects present or the obvious signs that the room had not been properly cleaned. When she inspected the room, her response was dismissive and unprofessional. She scoffed, rolled her eyes, and told us, “Yeah, no, those are box elders,” rather than treating a legitimate sanitation concern appropriately. We requested a refund due to the condition of the room and the potential health risks. That request was denied. We then requested to be moved to another room that was properly cleaned and farther away from the affected room, and that request was also denied. Management was contacted and also refused to provide any resolution. We had no choice but to leave the hotel. Unfortunately, the lack of customer service did not end there. I contacted corporate four separate times in an attempt to resolve this matter. Corporate was of no help. I was provided incorrect email addresses twice when trying to submit photos and documentation, and despite multiple attempts to follow up, I never received a direct response or meaningful resolution. Corporate claims the hotel responded, but we have never received that correspondence ourselves and have been left with the same refusal to address the situation that we experienced in person. What is even more concerning is that there are other reviews reporting similar cleanliness and pest-related issues at this property. This does not appear to be an isolated concern. A hotel room should be clean, inspected, and ready for the next guest. When a customer reports a serious sanitation issue, the response should be investigation and resolution—not dismissal. BEWARE before staying here. Based on our experience, the condition of the room and the lack of support from both hotel management and corporate leadership were completely unacceptable. We strongly encourage future guests to read recent reviews carefully before booking.
"Updated but not exceptional"
Room was nice. Enjoyed the updated decor and new feel of the hotel. The shower floor felt oily/dirty. Did not like the microfiber/polyester sheets. Cotton sheets are preferred. They did not offer decaf coffee at breakfast. So, not a place I'd choose to stay again if another better option was available.
"Customer service is clearly not a priority at this hotel."
My visitor needed to cut their stay short and leave one night early. They followed the proper process by leaving their room key and a note at the front desk when they checked out. I have been trying to obtain a refund for the unused night, but getting any assistance from management has been extremely frustrating. When I finally spoke with the manager at the front desk, she was rude, dismissive, and spoke to me harshly in front of other guests who were waiting to check in. She insisted that she needed an email to investigate my refund request, despite the fact that I had already sent at least four emails, all with supporting documentation attached. In addition to the emails, I left numerous voicemails that were never returned. After all of this, the manager claimed she still needed to "research" the situation. Frankly, there is nothing to research. I provided an annotated invoice along with text messages confirming that my visitor attempted to check out early and followed the hotel's instructions. The documentation clearly supports the refund request. The most disappointing part of this experience has been the complete lack of communication and accountability. Instead of addressing a straightforward issue, management has ignored calls, failed to respond to messages, and treated a paying customer with disrespect. Based on my experience, I cannot recommend this hotel. If a problem arises during your stay, don't expect timely communication, professional customer service, or a reasonable resolution.
"Terrible"
Staff never at desk and overcharged for stay while being asked to leave after room was booked in pet friendly stay. They should loose their franchise agreement and be labeled s@#t show.
"Good stay"
It was a good night stay with a comfortable bed. The only negative is all the rooms have connecting doors and the connecting rooms can be loud with TVs and people talking.
Thank you for sharing your feedback with us. We're pleased to hear that you enjoyed a comfortable night's stay and found the bed to your liking. Providing a restful and relaxing environment for our guests is always a top priority. We regret that noise impacted part of your experience and sincerely apologize for any inconvenience this may have caused. For clarification, while some of our rooms do offer connecting doors to accommodate families and groups traveling together, not all of our guestrooms are connecting rooms. We are always happy to accommodate room location preferences whenever possible. Thank you again for your comments and for choosing to stay with us. We appreciate your feedback and look forward to welcoming you back in the future. Warm Regards, Best Western Montrose Inn
"Updated and Friendly"
This hotel has been updated since it was a Stay Wise. The staff is very pleasant, and the rooms are in excellent condition. The breakfast was what I term a full breakfast with most anything people will want.
Thank you for taking the time to share your experience with us! We are delighted to hear that you noticed the updates to the property and enjoyed our pleasant staff and well-maintained rooms. It's also great to know our breakfast met your expectations—we work hard to offer a full selection that appeals to a wide range of tastes. We truly appreciate your kind words and hope to welcome you back again soon! Warm Regards, Best Western Montrose Inn
"Best Western Montrose CO"
What a great hotel with an excellent front desk person! I made a mistake on my reservation date and she helped me correct it and got me in! I was also recognized for my elite status and offered water and a snack. My king room is on the second floor and is so clean, I have a sofa, table and shower with bath products. In room coffee, microwave and fridge. Bed is comfortable and has pillows. I would recommend this for anyone looking for a clean and comfortable room!
Thank you so much for taking the time to share such a wonderful review! We're thrilled to hear that you had a great experience and that our front desk team was able to assist you with your reservation and make you feel valued as an elite member. Your kind words about the cleanliness, comfort, and amenities of your room truly mean a lot to us, as we work hard to ensure every guest enjoys a relaxing and welcoming stay. We're delighted that you found the bed comfortable and appreciated the in-room conveniences. Thank you for recommending our hotel, and we look forward to welcoming you back again very soon! Warm Regards, Best Western Montrose Inn
"Good breakfast choices"
Good hotel at a decent price. We wanted a place close to Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park and this place fit the bill. My biggest complaint is the pool. Front desk staff told us the pool was heated to 86 degrees, but it was like a polar plunge. We could not swim in it. There is no hot tub. Breakfast was good.
Thank you for taking the time to share your review. We're happy to hear you found our hotel to be a good value and an ideal location for visiting Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park. It's also great to know you enjoyed the breakfast during your stay. We apologize regarding your feedback about the pool and will certainly keep it in mind as we continue to evaluate our amenities and guest experience. Thank you again for choosing to stay with us. We hope to have the pleasure of welcoming you back in the future . Warm Regards, Best Western Montrose Inn
"The worst place I have ever stayed"
Don't stay here! Jacuzzi is not warm. Door did not lock due to the door frame was bent. Right above the pool and the noise came right up into the room through the shower drain. Nothing was plugged in and the room smelt dirty and made us feel dirty. Go anywhere else!
Thank you for taking the time to share your feedback. We are very concerned by the experience described; however, after reviewing the details in your comments, we believe this review may have been intended for a different property. Our hotel does not have a jacuzzi, and our layout and room configuration do not include guest rooms located directly above a pool, as described. For this reason, the concerns mentioned do not align with our facilities or accommodations. Guest safety, security, and cleanliness are top priorities for us, and we take all feedback seriously. If this review was posted in error, we kindly recommend contacting the correct property so they may appropriately address your concerns. If you believe your comments were meant for our hotel, we would appreciate the opportunity to speak with you directly to better understand the situation. Thank you for your time and understanding. Sincerely, Best Western Montrose Inn
"Good place to stay in Montrose"
This is the basic Best Western motel with interior access. Helpful, friendly staff. The location is on the edge of town so it is a bit of a drive to get to the center of things but I did not find that a problem. It looked like the remodeling project has stalled and the elevator was not functioning (I was forewarned). I found it reasonably priced for what it was. I would stay there again.
Thank you for sharing your thoughtful review of your recent stay with us. We are delighted to hear that you found our team helpful and friendly, and that you felt our hotel offered good value for your stay. We appreciate your understanding regarding our location as well as the temporary interruption to our remodeling project and elevator service. Your feedback is truly valued, as it helps guide our ongoing improvements. We would be honored to welcome you back and provide you with another comfortable and pleasant stay in the future. Warm Regards, Best Western Montrose Inn
"Good choice for Montrose"
Nice clean rooms. Elevator was out of service at the time. Had trouble with one of the washing machines but the nice lady at the front desk helped us. Very comfortable bed. Typical hotel breakfast.
Thank you for taking the time to share your experience with us. We're pleased to hear that you found your room clean and comfortable, especially the bed, and that our front desk team was able to assist you promptly with the laundry issue. We appreciate your understanding regarding the elevator being out of service and your feedback on the breakfast offering. Your comments are valuable to us, and we hope to have the opportunity to welcome you back for another comfortable stay in the future. Warm Regards, Best Western Montrose Inn
"Kind gesture, but no compassion when it mattered most"
I booked a hotel through Expedia during a trip that unexpectedly included an emergency room visit. The staff at the hotel kindly offered to carry my luggage due to my arm injury, which I appreciated. However, when I asked to check out even one minute past 11:00 AM—because my wife couldn't pick me up until 12:30 PM—they refused. No flexibility, no understanding, even in the middle of a medical emergency. I wasn't asking for hours, just a little grace. Expedia's booking process was smooth, but if you're considering this hotel, don't expect any exceptions or empathy. I strongly recommend confirming policies directly with the property before booking, especially if you might need accommodations due to health or travel issues.
Thank you for taking the time to share your feedback. We are glad that you appreciated our helpful staff and our team was able to assist you with your luggage and appreciate your recognition of their efforts. We're sorry that your stay didn't fully meet your expectations. Your comments are important to us and will help guide ways we can continue to improve the guest experience. We hope that, despite the challenges during your trip, you were able to focus on your recovery and travel safely. We would welcome the opportunity to provide you with a more seamless and comfortable stay in the future. Warm Regards, Best Western Montrose Inn
"Could be nice hotel...."
Ok I'll start with the good. 1.The room was very clean. 2. The hotel was a little older, but the rooms had been refreshed not long ago, so that made it nicer. 3. Hotel was very quiet, no road noise. 4. Bed mattress was ok . Pool & area around the pool, was very clean, also fitness area looked clean. Now the Bad - The breakfast attendant looked mad, are grumpy, not sure which, I wasn't impressed. Also be early to breakfast because she pulled asap even when there was a family with small children trying to eat. The front desk ladies (night and morning) were efficiently friendly, but I asked night clerk about quarters for the guest laundry machines & she was Very blunt in response. It's a strange set up... The washers, dryers, ice machine and water fountain all are in a room together, and the room door is closed at 8pm. So, no Ice, water, are laundry after 7:30?. We checked in at 730pm and went to do one load of wet kid's clothes at 745 and was told by desk clerk I could not use the laundry, because it would close at *8 OCLOCK! to me that is absurd! Ice and water should be available 24 hrs. a day, and the guest washer and dryers should stay open till AT LEAST 930 so ppl can be finished by 10pm. I have never encountered this at any other hotel. Also, they are in the middle of installing an elevator, but it wasn't working when we stayed. Would I stay again?... My room was clean, and decent, but due to the laundry set up, unfriendliness of attendant, sorry but I will be choosing a different hotel next time I'm in Montrose Co.
Thank you for taking the time to share such detailed feedback about your stay. We're glad to hear that you found your room clean, quiet, and comfortable, and that you appreciated the refreshed rooms, pool area, and fitness center. We sincerely apologize for the issues you experienced. Guest comfort and convenience are very important to us, and we regret that our breakfast service and laundry set up did not meet your expectations. Your observations are valuable, and we will review them carefully as we continue to improve our guest experience. While we're sorry your stay did not fully meet your expectations, we do hope you might consider giving us another opportunity in the future. Your comfort and satisfaction are our top priorities, and we are committed to making improvements based on the experiences shared by our guests. Kind Regards, Best Western Montrose Inn
"An OK place to stay."
Pretty average place for the price. The lobby is kinda torn up right now. Looks like they're replacing the elevator, so I'll let that go. Staff were courteous, and the room was clean. A/C unit was a bit noisy, but once the room cooled down, the A/C only cycled every now and then. Oh well, I took it for the team for one night, and got a good night's sleep regardless. The breakfast… Meh. they provided the usual overcooked scrambled eggs, sorry-looking potatoes that were very soggy, and sad little link sausages. No granola and yogurt provided… Cornflakes, and Froot Loops only. The waffles that one makes oneself were horrid. The ultra-processed batter that they use is disgusting. The bagels and bread, were probably the cheapest they could order out of the catalog. The only fresh fruit was some sorry looking apples and over-ripe bananas. The orange juice had a metallic taste to it. Undrinkable. Don't get me started on the coffee. At least they provided half and half to adulterate the otherwise insipid brew, but hey… I'm a coffee snob.
"Thankful for a nice clean hotel"
This hotel is being renovated & still some areas are under construction. Our room had been redone & was very nice & clean. Our room was small but adequate for our stay. The elevator wasn't installed at the time of our stay & the girl who checked us in was very helpful in making sure we were on the first floor. Our only negative was the pillows - the bed had plenty of pillows but none of them were easy for either of us to use - too much foam in them.
"Seemed brand new"
This is a new or renovated hotel. It is still under construction. While we were there, they were still working on the parking lot, the lobby, and a room upstairs. There was plenty of parking available. It is near the outskirts of town so you will need to drive to restaurants. Check in and out was fast and easy. The pool is indoors but was not heated. Breakfast included sausage links, scrambled eggs, hash browns, make your own waffles, yogurt, bagels, toast, cereal, and fruit. Our room was large and clean. I'm not sure it had ever been used. The bed was comfortable with plenty of pillows. The AC worked well. The shower had plenty of hot water and good water pressure. Nice amenities. The Wi-Fi worked great. We would definitely stay here again.
"Great Overnight Stop"
Fresh & New, yes still finishing remodel but our room was updated and so was lobby, pool, and eating area, best shower ever in a hotel. Great location for our overnight stay to fly out of Montrose AirportBreakfast was just average. Really nice
"Nicer with previous owners"
The staff is great but it was sad to see the downgrades at this hotel. The breakfast offered has lost most of its appeal. Not sure if the offered OJ was Tang or Kool-aid. The swimming pool was too cold. The fire pit and BBQ area, though welcoming, had chairs barely holding together to sit in and no propane. Hope the newest owners take in consideration requests of its guests!
"Good breakfast, could be cleaner"
We stayed one night at the Stay Wise Inn, was efficiently checked in by Siclali and had a large king bed room. Pros - Good bed, and linens, good shower, med vanity outside the bathroom (a big plus), a table with 2 chairs. Cons - the bathroom floor had hair and a dirty footprint, showerhead and shower curtain needed cleaned, no bath fan, no lamp on right side of bed, large empty armoire in the corner taking up a lot of space. Breakfast - was good, with Sausage links, scrambled eggs, country potatoes, fresh waffles, breads, cereals, yogurt, juices and coffee.
