"Reception staff friendly, hotel a bit noisy"

3
06/11/2018

Positives Friendly reception staff Good location for the town Shower worked well Negatives Noise from other guests due to thin walls and creaking floors A large number of the tables at breakfast that were on the lighter side of the room near the windows had been ‘Reserved' meaning that despite me being down early and every single one being free I had to sit somewhere I didn't want to.. no mention of a reservation process when I checked in... View out of my room of rubbish bag on the flat roof wasn't too inspiring .. see pic

I am really sorry to hear that your stay was not up to expectations, I will be looking into all the points you have raised. Regarding large /breakfast reserved tables, this is for our Tour Groups who reserve bigger tables. Our residence are more than welcome to sit anywhere else as we provide extra additional setting to the numbers in house. I hope to look forward in welcoming you back again soon.

"Would not return"

I would NOT recommend this hotel to anyone. It is the COLDEST room I have ever stayed in. I literally felt like I had walked into a fridge when we went to bed. When I asked at reception she explained the heating was on a timer and would come back on in the morning. !!! What??? It was 0 degrees outside. We had to fold up our 4 year olds quilt and also put some towels over her. We had to sleep in dressing gowns and also put towels over the quilt. I have never felt so uncomfortable. The water was also barely warm from the tap in our bedroom. We had sandwiches in the bar on bread that could only be described as a supermarket value basic bread, not what you expect when you are staying in what is supposed to be a nice hotel. The dinner menu had chilled tuna salad on it. Well that is a couple of blobs of tuna mayo with some chopped tomatoes and cucumber!!! We will never return, which is a shame as my parents live local to the hotel

Stayed here for one night in room 127. Spotlessly clean. Large room with a very comfortable bed. Room a little dark. Tea and coffee tray and also iron and ironing board available in wardrobe. Just a tip, it takes the hot water in the bathroom about 10 mins to get hot so have in running in preparation. Lovely selection of toiletries, bathrobes and slippers provided. Breakfast was great and good selection. Wished we could have stayed for longer, would definitely stay here again.

We stayed here as we had been invited to a wedding at the Devonshire Arms (6 miles away and £10 in a taxi) and i refused to pay over £200 for a night there (though it is nice), we were allowed to check in early (about mid day) as our room was ready, i think i chose well as the local taxi company (receptionist phoned it for me) is very good... We didn't eat there as the wedding was all day, the bed was very comfortable and the staff were excellent. The only issue i had was the room was cold when we got in as the central heating is on a timer, the night man offered to bring up a blow heater.. The wi-fi was very good throughout the Hotel and the Breakfast was good quality and plentiful.

Our first visit here. Room was upgraded due to no lift. No handrail upstairs leading to our room. I have mobility issues and could not have got up the stairs without my husband. Breakfast on Saturday, no egg, hash browns or beans. Gave up waiting so just had bacon and mushroom. Sunday no bacon had to wait. Coffee was cold and no set table. Staff pleasant but run ragged. Will not be making a return visit to this hotel.

Thank you for taking the time to write a review about your recent visit to Craiglands Hotel. I am really sorry to hear that your stay was not up to expectations. The lift is currently out of service and is awaiting delivery of the part required to rectify this. This is an unforeseen event that is out of our control.Staff where on hand to assist with porterage to ensure no guest where inconvenienced. We hope the offer of a complimentary upgrade to room located in a better place, was adequate. With regards to the breakfast, this was a buffet service on both days and constantly replenished by the Duty Manager. If you had spoken to a member of the team we would of been able to reassure you the Breakfast is replenished throughout.

Brilliant Hotel. Great location on the edge of Ilkley Moor with great views and walking nearby. Within walking distance of Ilkley town. Hotel Staff attentive & friendly. Bridal suite perfect with little sideroom for my Chief Bridesmaid. All Food and Full English breakfasts for our guests the morning after were excellent. Highly recommended. Thankyou all for making our Blessing day and whole weekend so very special.

Afternoon Shirley, We appreciate your positive feedback and are glad the Wedding blessing went well. We hope to welcoming you back to the hotel soon.

When we first arrived, we found that there was no hot water in the room, we advised reception and later that day we were given another room. The water was tepid that night and following morning, but by midday we had hot water for rest of stay. We ate in restaurant the first night and meal was ok. Breakfasts were good. The lift was out of action, but we had been told this by email before we arrived. We couldn't fault the staff who were all very good, but hotel needs some TLC to get rid of issues.

Thank you for taking the time to write a review about your recent visit to Craiglands Hotel. I am really sorry to hear that your stay was not up to expectations, due to the age of the building, hot water does sometimes take up to 10 minutes to run through consistently as advised in the guest information directories placed in all bedrooms. The lift is currently out of service and is awaiting delivery of the part required to rectify this. This is an unforeseen event that is out of our control. Staff where on hand to assist with porterage to ensure no guest where inconvenienced.

"Afternoon Tea is really really bad"

1
21/10/2018

Me and my boyfriend came for afternoon tea that he bought me as part of my birthday present. It was absolutely awful. Firstly there is a pretty hideous extension on the back of the building so as soon as we saw that we knew it wasn't going to be the best. As for the actual food and drinks it was terrible, the sandwiches were horrible and there were hardly any, actually the cheese and pickle one was okay, the cakes had clearly been bought from Aldi and the scones were rock solid, you could literally knock someone out with them. The tea was okay but didn't appreciate the sugar bowl without a spoon which people had clearly had their hands in. It was really terrible, but we did actually have quite a good time because we couldn't stop laughing at how bad everything was. Luckily my boyfriend got it on wowcher so it was only £20 for both of us but it's supposed to be £44!!! I don't know how they can think any of it was worth £44!? To be honest though there was a really nice waitress who I think was embarrassed to even be serving it to us it was that bad. Would not recommend.

TheCraiglandsHotel, Guest Relations Manager at The Craiglands Hotel, responded to this review
Thank you for taking the time to tell me about your experience here at the Craiglands Hotel. I am sorry that your experience did not meet your expectations. The homemade cakes are freshly baked on site by our Chef's , not Aldi, along with homemade Scones and freshly prepared Sandwiches. Should the standard and issues been raised at the time we would have been more than happy to discuss this and other a replacement.

Booked this hotel for our wedding anniversary. We had never been to Ilkely before & we had a lovely timeThe hotel in a good location about a 10 mins walk down hill & about 15 mins back up hill. Lovely spacious room , bathrobes , tea / coffee & bottled water in the roomVery comfortable bed & room Very nice .Like a lot of people we had problems with the hot water but I expected this because I had read reviews . We reported it to reception & the lovely young lady explained that it's with it been an old building etc. We just ran bath / shower for 10mins or so till the hot water came through Even though we had problems with hot water , we would stay again because we liked the hotel , staff & location

"Lovely hotel but the rooms are shabby and you won't sleep!"

08/10/2018

Stayed for a wedding, hotel itself and the food was lovely, until we went up to our room. Room was tiny, the wallpaper was peeling off the walls, no bath and the shower was not strong. One towel for 2 guests. I felt the room was worth £30-45 a night not the £89 I paid.I could have lived with that if it wasn't for being woken up by staff outside our room (we were clearly outside the service entrance) at 1am, then 3am, then 5.30am and again at 8am. Fed back politely at checkout and was told it was 'the night porters' and she couldnt do anything there and then but she'd get the manager to call us. That was 30 odd hours ago and no contact at all.

"Not overly impressed"

08/10/2018

Stayed one night (Saturday 6th Oct) for a meet up with friends, who also stayed. Staff were very good, Breakfast good also, I'm afraid rooms given were a big let down, my friends who made the booking had been informed via email that there were two events in the Hotel, so we would be put in "quiet" rooms away from any possible noise. The bathroom was very good, but the room was poor, the carpet looked as though a miner had walked round with coal on their feet! Dirty looking black marks all over the carpet which put you off walking in bear feet on it, and the room was small with not a lot of room to move! Lift was out of order, and some of the stairs were akin to climbing a steep hill! For the money charged, we expected Breakfast to be included. We don't like giving bad review, but do feel that rooms require upgrading.

"Clean, comfortable, great staff, good food but cold shower."

24/09/2018

We (my husband and I and our daughter) stayed recently for a family wedding. The staff were very helpful and friendly, the bed was very comfortable (a hotel rarity) and the room was clean with plenty of storage space plus kettle, ironing board and hair dryer. We thoroughly enjoyed the breakfast, in fact we didn't feel ready to eat again until mid afternoon. However our experience was let down by the shower which was cold. We rang reception to report it and were asked to let it run for ten minutes by which time it would have warmed up. I let it run for twenty minutes by which time it was approaching lukewarm and had to settle for that as my shower and hair-wash varied between lukewarm and cold - not a very pleasant experience so I doubt I would stay again.

"Brilliant Staff!"

21/09/2018

We stayed here last weekend, just for a night. We had read comments about staff etc but, seriously folks, don't believe it! The staff we came into contact with (quite a few) could not have been more polite and helpful. The weekend we stayed there was a large wedding taking place at one end of the hotel and another, smaller party, at the other end. This did not impact on us in any way in terms of service or how we used the facilities; we ate in the hotel in the evening and the food was really very good. The rooms are a very good standard and include haridryer, iron and board/tea & coffee making, robes & slippers in the bathroom etc and the room we stayed in was immaculate. We had breakfast the next morning and when I say it set us up for the day, I really mean that! We did not eat again all day! We have stayed with Best Western before and their breakfasts are legendary! I have only three observations to make; the hairdryers could do with an upgrade, we could not find sockets next to the bed to charge phones (we use ours as alarm clocks too) and the bar prices are eye-watering (hence 4 stars); a pint of John Smiths and a 175ml glass of red wine was £12.50! These are observations only, not criticisms; I would definitely stay here again and I would recommend it to others. It is a very short walk into Ilkley but far enough away to be quiet. Don't be put off by the construction work at the far end of the property; they are improving the road down to the car park and you can't make an omelette without breaking eggs!

"Daughters wedding"

06/09/2018

We arrived on the Saturday afternoon to a lot of miss communication and this left us as a family unsure of what was going to happen it was sorted but not in a proper manner I felt the room we had booked for my daughters wedding was dirty carpet in a mess and unsafe in places the whole hotel needs a good clean and a lot of tlc rooms were ok but there's a lot of room for improvement water took along time to even get warm lift still not working which seems to be a big issue in the hotel breakfast was ok but everything was a mess no keeping things tidy not a good appearance as you walked in buffet for my daughters wedding average to say the least but hot and nicely presented this venue but a lot of cleaning care and attention to people and the hotel itself is needed

"Mixed Feelings"

28/08/2018

We booked this hotel for its location which is close to Ilkley Moor so ideal for us. The hotel could definitely do with some TLC. From the faded cover outside the main entrance to an out of order lift which reading previous reviews seems to be a trend. This wasn't a problem for us and although we did have an issue with the room it was sorted out for us and we enjoyed our stay. The breakfast was disappointing as the quality just wan't there but nevertheless a reasonable choice and the staff were pleasant and helpful. Although a little local knowledge would have been useful together with a map of the town. Plus points, free car park, lovely fluffy white towels & comfortable bed resulting in a good nights sleep so overall deserved a 4 bubble review.

I stayed at craiglands with my boyfriend on the 17-19 of August. It was extremely pleasant throughout the hole stay however one night I went down for dinner and the orders got mixed up this caused a little delay for the food to come out however it was not a big deal. The next morning me and my boyfriend came down to breakfast and were greated by a lovely young lady called Natalie. She was fab also Holly (i think) were very informative about the surrounding areas of ilkley as we have never been before and they quickly got us seated. Overall the hotel was excellent and we thoroughly enjoyed our stay. Thanks.

Me and A few friends stopped for 2 nights in this hotel .The room we stopped in was very clean however the room got very humid and warm on a night , this ment we found it hard to sleep . The beds were reasonably comfy but the bedrooms should definitely have air conditioning in the rooms . All the staff where very friendly and welcoming which made our stay a lot nicer . On both mornings we attended breakfast , which was set in a lovely room (if only there was more windows to look at the view) . we were greeted by a very police young lady called Natalie who was very fast with getting us what we needed . We had explained to her how the walk back up from ilkley town Centre wasn't very pleasent and she was fast to inform us on a shorter way to make the journey less painful (this was cutting up a street opposite from Tesco's ). overall the hotel was a success for our little short break away and would definitely return .

"Overall good stay"

The location of this hotel is perfect for what we planned to do on our few days away. We were given a voucher with many hotels to chose from by my parents but the distance from both the shops, restaurants and ect. and the country side was ideal for us in this particular hotel. We spent our time visiting places such as the cow and calf, the nearby river and the historical market towns surrounding ilkley, like Otley and Skipton. On evenings we tended to head down to ilkley to experience the nightlife, the bars were lively with a fantastic atmosphere. Generally, our stay in the hotel was brilliant. We only had one meal a day in the hotel, breakfast. The food was to a high standard and the tea was the best I'd had in weeks (which surprised me when the staff revealed I was drinking PG tips... must be the way they made it!) all the staff were generally friendly, one particular young lady, called Lucy, made sure our morning was pleasant. She checked us in, made our tea and coffee and ensured we had everything we needed. The receptionists were lovely and once again made sure all of our needs were met. As the lift was down the receptionists had our bags brought to our rooms for us! When arriving the receptionist was a gentleman with fair hair; leaving the receptionist was a lady with brown hair, however we forgot their names! Me and my partner would defiantly recommend and come back here again ourselves.

15/08/2018

We were very very disappointed during our stay. We were attending a family party nearby and this hotel was a good location for us to get there easily. I began to get ready an hour before I had to leave, unpacked and was pretty happy at this point with the room. The bath room was enormous but with little in it. Stairs in the room lead to an adjoining room which was locked. I get into the shower to find there was no knob for the temperature gage.... it was missing with just plastic remains. I switched on the shower hoping that it would be at least warm as I was short on time .... freezing. My husband and I tried to fiddle with the plastic but to no joy. We rang on our mobile down to reception but no answer after few minutes waiting. My husband got dressed and had to take the stairs down as now the lift was broken. He returned after a while with a male manager as I am embarrassingly sat in a towel with now only 35 minutes until I have to be out. He looked at the shower and said he would go away and sort it. I was not happy left waiting another 10 minutes for a young girl to return with a new key card to another room. We packed up, I walked up the corridor still in my towel as I now have 20 minutes until my taxi arrives .... New room ok but this bathroom was so tiny I could touch wall to wall with outstretched hands. It was ridiculously tiny. I had a shower now accepting I was going to have to leave separately to my family as I only had 15 minutes to shower, wash hair and get ready. The shower wS extremely poor. The shower door rickety and I struggled to move the doors to get out. Had to return to old room for towels as only one in the room. And also to get a better hair dryer. I was upset I missed the first 45 minutes of my family party and not happy with no lift and being just about as far away from the entrance as could be. The next morning after an average sleep. Noise from outside I guess from people st a wedding .... the lift remained broken. We did say we were unhappy and were assured that tithe general manger would be in touch the next day as he was not on duty ... We still await contact. I will never go here again and wonder how the place keeps going. It generally needs thousands and thousands spending on it to bring it into this century. I cannot believe the cost of the room for the quality. No wonder we all holiday abroad ....

"The hotel was lovely, two stars as I'm disabled and the lift was out of service..."

14/08/2018

We received a warm & polite welcome on arrival. It was short lived when we were informed the lift was out of service. wouldn't be a problem, however, I am disabled, we were given a room that was accessible (my husband informed the hotel I was disabled when he booked the room) The only problem was actually accessing the the room with the lift being out of service. I was informed I would have to climb a flight of stairs to the first floor. Having to use the stairs caused me unnecessary pain, plus using a crutch in each hand and climbing up and downstairs was unsafe, We were told an engineer was on his way. When My husband and I left to go out for dinner the lift still hadn't been repaired. I had to walk down stairs, when we returned a few hours later the lift was still out of service, the next morning still out of service. What would have happened if I hadn't been having a reasonably good day? and turned up in my wheelchair because I couldn't use my legs? Would we have turned up to be told I still had to walk upstairs? Or we couldn't stay? We didn't receive a call to inform us the lift was out of service before we arrived, if we had received a call we could have made a judgement call, more than likely rebooked. But to turn up to be told it wasn't working annoyed me. The room was itself was very clean, the bed has to be one of the most comfortable beds I have laid on, shame I didn't quite get to enjoy it,due to the discomfort in my legs with having to use stairs. The continental breakfast, pastries, cereal fruit etc was outstanding, the cooked breakfast was ok,(bacon was dry) sausages were delicious. The only saving grace were the two young ladies Lucy and Natalie whom were tending to breakfast. They were both very polite, friendly, chatty and informative. The both really cheered me up. It was very nice to have that personal touch. I hope Lucy and Natalie receive this praise.

Very welcoming. Our room overlooked the Moors what a wonderful view. Large bedroom, dressing room and good size bathroom with the best shower we have used in a long time. The location is wonderful for Ilkley Tow centre where you will find a famous tea shop Betty's. Also not too far from Bolton Abbey and to have a good days shopping make for Boundary Mill for all the bargains

Me and wife had breakfast this morning at the hotel and they was two young girls called Emma and Lucy who helped me, Emma was on the night before and still cheerful along with Lucy who served us the morning before who was also very cheerful. The time we spent at the hotel wouldn't have been that good if it wasn't for these two young lady's who are amazing and kind to me and wife. Thank you

We stayed here two nights because our MG rally was leaving from and returning to this hotel. The room was clean and comfortable, the staff were friendly, there was a wedding on but it disturbed us not at all. However the breakfast was really disappointing. To be fair it was busy, but when we came down there were no plates for toast or for cereal, no bread for toast, no yogurts. Staff were taking orders for tea and coffee and going as fast as they could but I would rather have used a coffee machine and found everything I wanted on the buffet. The cooked breakfast was ok, apart from the scrambled eggs which were pretty gross. We had a Sunday lunch there at the end of the rally; they must have served about 300 people and they did that really well.

Stayed for 1 night as we had a wedding at Bolton Abbey which was about 15 mins drive away. Room was fine & a nice bathroom which had been newly refurbished. Breakfast was included in our price & got a freshly cooked full English.

Had dinner in the brasserie, good choice on menu, attentive staff and lovely refurbishments. I also really like that the tablecloth and napkins were lovely crisp white starched linen, the food was served beautifully - my friend and I had steak which was disappointing, overcooked and very chewy, but everything else was very good and the maitre d didn't charge for the meat.

Lovely hotel, lots of refurbishment and many improvements - service was good - starters delicious - main course disappointing the steak was thin, over cooked and very chewy - in the plus side the maitre d reduced the bill but I am not concerned about the bill I just wanted a fabulous meal

I had a lovely weekend away here, the service made my visit even more enjoyable as the staff were so accomodating a boy named Cameron helped me with my bags and was very polite. The quality of the rooms were much to my satisfaction, the food was amazing also as it was very fresh.

I attended craiglands hotel for a light beverage with my other half, the welcoming atmosphere was amazing, Cameron especially was extremely knowledgable about the sounding area and was very helpful with my queries. Outstanding in every way!!

Stayed here last weekend as a last minute get away. Room was at the back of hotel but was fine. Comfy beds. The only thing that let it down was the bathroom. Recently refurbished the floor was extremely slippery even with the bath mat down. I slipped coming out the Bath. Also the hot water does take a long time to come, when switched on. Did report incident to hotel. Would come back again.

I recently attended a wedding and was blown away by the service. A young chap, around 20 or so I believe his name was Cameron. He looked after me the whole night and was very attentive. Poured an excellent pint too. Real 5* experience.

"Excellent Afternoon Tea"

28/07/2018

Whilst in Ilkley we decided to give here a try instead of Betty's for the afternoon tea and it was lovely. Freshly made sandwiches on good bread with good fillings, good scones with clotted cream and a great selection of beautiful sweet things, can highly recommend as a change from Betty's will definitely go again. Service was excellent.

Was here early July for business. Great hotel even better barman (Cameron ‘scotty' Scott). Best pina colada this side of the Atlantic, and best barman ever (dreamy eyes, soft skin, gentle touch). Never going to go anywhere else

had a belter time, food was out of this world and so were the staff...Especially a certain Cameron Scott who i noticed as he used to play for Blackburn's youth team. Always been hard working, hopefully one day he'll get his break. Reminds me of a young John Stones but has the service of Paul Scholes on the pitch and serving customers.

We have stayed in this hotel already 4 times = about 15 nights. We have tried other places, but we always returned here. Fantastic location and all you need is there: great breakfast, friendly staff, piece and so close to Ilkley moors! However pillows could be better - very hard pillows this time.

Dear Guests, Thank you very much for your review, I am delighted that you enjoyed your visit to the Craiglands Hotel and have passed on your comments to the Head House Keeper regarding pillows. "Traditional hotel used as a base for a short holiday in Yorkshire"

3
23/07/2018

We booked a short break with Arena Rail Holidays so we had no choice of hotel. However this did not mean we were disappointed. Craiglands Hotel is a traditional hotel which was formerly a hydro back in its glory days. Our room was fine as a base and was clean and tidy. The meals provided were very good. The staff were very pleasant and helpful. We had a couple of niggles but they weren't anything major. Drinks were very expensive from the hotel bar but this is something we have come to expect from hotels the world over. The water for the shower took a long time to warm up and, despite the advice to run it until warm, we felt guilty about doing that during a drought. The way the building is set up meant that, even though we could take our bags up in the lift to the second floor, there were a lot of steps to be negotiated to our room at the rear of the hotel. To be fair, we were offered help with the bags but didn't realise how much, as it turned out, we needed it.

21/07/2018

This is a lovely, traditional hotel very close to the centre of Ilkley (5 minutes walk) and in a good position to explore the many attractions in the area. Our room was spotlessly clean, spacious and comfortable. It was very quiet and the bed was king sized and comfortable ensuring a good night's sleep. The shower room was immaculate and very new looking. Breakfast was excellent and offered both cooked options or a really good continental buffet. Ingredients were top quality. The dining room was a joy - beautifully laid tables with views onto the garden. Staff were all very polite, helpful and welcoming. I would definitely recommend this hotel to anyone.

I wanted to take this opportunity to that everyone involved in Saturdays wedding, it was truly brilliant. The staff are a credit to you and the day went without a hitch. To watch your best friend get married without a stress in the world is an honour and privilege. Nothing was too much for Majid and the team, though there were no issues to attend to from my knowledge. Fantastic building, fantastic staff, fantastic atmosphere, what more could you ask for???

"Probably good for large drunk wedding parties but if you want sleep go elsewhere."

Arriving in our room the wife and I looked at each other and said nothing. Ever the optimists, we can usually find something positive but the journey to the room, through a series of hand sticky fire doors, may have lowered our expectation. Two nights stay visiting friends, so this was just a place to get the head down. Why do people feel the need to shout when drunk? I asked myself as they ran up and down the corridors. Swinging my legs out of bed to offer some sage words of advice I hear them disappear around some corner and had images of a tired old bald gent chasing youths through the staircases of the hotel. This was nothing compared to the next night when at 12:30 the fire alarm went off. Yes, every room has an internal sounder. You can't miss it. My waking dream must have been back on a submarine because my first thought was seal the hatches and prepare for a bang. I spring up, get dressed and prepare to enter a corridor of fire and brimstone. Even in an emergency the constantly tacky fire doors make one think of pay by the hour rooms. The alarm stops and I have a look around. There is a phone on reception to call when the post is vacated but as I look around, and I have been in a few tricky situations in my life, this isn't one of them. Wandering back to my room the odd door slips ajar and we share a “who knows” face as I pass. As I watched the sun rise I summarised that this wasn't so much a sleeping hotel, more a bygone building slipping into the cracks of decay. Oh yes, the breakfast. Tried it, couldn't eat it. Go into town and queue at Bettys for a fabulous start to the day.

13/07/2018

We have just spent two nights at this hotel. Our room was just about the furthest away as possible from the reception...quite a trek. However, this meant we had no noisy guests banging doors and talking loudly outside our door. In fact it was really quiet and lovely. Nice spacious room with large bathroom, and the bed was really comfortable. One thing we loved.....the TV. It was a decent size, not like some TVs you get in hotels which are the size of a postage stamp with tinny sound. We got everything we expected for this sort of hotel. Tea and coffee making facilities in the room. The breakfast was average, again what we would expect. The staff were very friendly. Just a couple of moans which is why I've not given 5 stars. The hot water took AGES to come through to the shower. In the booklet in the room it said to leave the bath running for a couple of minutes to allow the hot water to reach the bathroom. At the moment, we are experiencing a drought so this is not good. Also, if you are in a hurry...appointment or work, this is very frustrating. I was not happy either to see baskets and tubs of dead plants at the hotel's entrance. Surely it should be someone's responsibility to water these. Not very welcoming. The hotel is a short walk from Ilkley which has many good shops pubs and restaurants. All in all, not a bad hotel, and I would definitely go there again.

"Very disappointed."

11/07/2018

Fabulous setting and location. We were given a very small room with the double bed pushed up to the wall at one side and with less than 18" at the other side. We complained after the first night and we were moved to a slightly bigger room. The staff admitted that the rooms were graded and that guests with vouchers were allocated low grade rooms. The shower in this room was however extremely small, not even an average size of wash basin, just a low vanity basin, and no window or extractor. If we had been more than average size people we would not have been able to use this space, it was little more than a cupboard. We decided not to eat at the Hotel as we did not want any more disappointment.

TheCraiglandsHotel, Guest Relations Manager at The Craiglands Hotel, responded to this review
Dear Guest I am really sorry to hear that your stay was not up to expectations, I will be looking into all the points you have raised. If reference to low graded rooms, this is not such a category. The voucher bought buy yourself, entitles you to a standard room to which you was allocate. Upgraded rooms are available at an additional cost, however the Duty Manager on the day offered you a complimentary upgrade to an executive rooms to which you accepted. Lovely hotel, full of character and charm. Staff were very friendly and room comfortable and spacious. Best bit was the countryside around it. One tip is to be extra careful when parking as lots of wood posts in car park which aren't always easy to see.

"Nice staff but hotel needs a lot of help"

2
07/07/2018

Staff were friendly and location is very good, but the hotel needs a lot of help of better management or funding to keep the hotel in good condition. Over-priced food and drinks for the quality - food very average - with plenty of short-cuts like tinned soup, powdered eggs to make scrambled eggs etc. E Staircase window had large broken pane in double glazing, which had not been fixed. Luke warm water in the shower for two days

The main attraction of this hotel is the perfect location surrounded by the beautiful Yorkshire countryside. However this hotel is in need of sprucing up as much is quite shabby. Evening meal first night was not good and we didn't choose to eat there on our second evening. Food and accommodation overpriced. Charges for wine were ridiculously high! I wouldn't go there again!

The room was smallish and very much in need of a makeover. The water was never hot even though there was a sign over the sink to say be careful hot water. The ceiling looked as if it might fall down there had obviously been a water leak in the floor above. The one thing I can say in its favour is that the staff were very good. Hope it has a new lease of life in the future.

Reception although welcoming forgot to take a swipe of the credit card for an account was the start. Room ok and supposed to be executive, but nothing extra like dressing gown or slippers etc., just tea making, shampoo etc., fresh milk by calling reception which is good. Had no shiraz wine and only half a bottle of rioja. Eventually sorted with a bottle not on the wine list, although the one I was shown was a shiraz with 3 award stickers on the label the one that was served had no award stickers and was GSM mix! They had two non - resident functions on including us who were residents, so the bar service was a disaster and one function being a party disco which was under the bedrooms, may as well have been there, as no possibility of sleep before midnight when the music ceased. Breakfast, why do they cook or boil bacon in bulk with no separation so that it has congealed white fat all over it, the rind fat still glutenous? no fried egg option, fresh fruit, yogurt and cereals etc. Probably not.

19/06/2018

My husband and I stayed at the Craiglands Hotel as a gift from one of my daughters but we weren't impressed with the place at all, in fact I would go so far as to say it looked rather shabby. In fact the only reason I gave it three was because the bathroom in our room was lovely even though the room was tiny and the breakfast wasn't too bad. The location of the hotel was within easy reach of Ilkley town centre but it looked as though it was in the middle of a housing estate as there was very little in the way of garden around the hotel, just houses and a building site. We didn't have any view from our window apart from a few trees as we were at the back of the hotel, the view maybe better from the front. There is some stunning countryside surrounding Ilkley which is we chose the place for our weekend away. We couldn't get our tv to work and it took three members of staff before they realised that the fuse outside of our room was switched off. It was unbearably hot in our room even though the radiator was off as there was a pipe which ran through all of the rooms that was red hot all of the time and couldn't be turned off, this made sleeping uncomfortable. When we booked we were told that there was a lift to all floors.....yes, there was a lift but then we had to manoeuvre approximately a dozen steps to our room which wasn't easy as I walk with a stick. To the side of the lift there was a closed off part staircase and I've never seen so much dust or so many cob webs in my life. As it could be seen clearly through a window I would have thought it would be better if it had been cleaned occasionally, but that's just my opinion. All in all the weekend was ok but I wouldn't stay there again and I wouldn't recommend it either.

09/06/2018

I would rate this hotel accommodation and staff high average, and the restaurant very good. Warning - if you have mobility problems you should be aware that there are 22 stone steps on the way up to the entrance from the car park (8 if you have a blue badge).

06/06/2018

We stayed for two nights, and were more than satisfied with the service we experienced. The accommodation was adequate, clean, well serviced, bearing in mind the age of the building, pretty much as much as could be expected. Both breakfast and evening meals were very good and adequate portions. Staff that we encountered we're very presentable, treated guests in a correct manor, and were helpful in all respects. The area is well worth a visit.

"Excellent value for money - huge and modern suite room"

06/06/2018

I was a bit anxious about staying given the mixed reviews on here, but I was pleasantly surprised. My family stayed in a suite which was enormous and very modern - with a plush bathroom, rolling top bath, large tv and good sized adjacent room. Clearly it had been refurbished recently. My wife and i were staying in a separate room which admittedly was small, the bed was probably a 3/4 size and could do with a bit of updating (though I think that is being picky) but as we were staying one night it was perfect and value for money. The breakfast was of a good standard too. Easy to find and lots of parking.

"Excellent Event"

04/06/2018

We held a large charity event at the hotel in April 2018 for over 200 people using the ballroom and the conservatory. The ballroom looked beautiful and it was a very successful event. We had great help with the organisation of the evening from some key members of staff including Khem the General Manager and Paul, the head chef. However we would agree with other reviewers that the hotel needs to step up its cleaning regime

My wife and I enjoyed a one night stay with Breakfast at this well located hotel. Must admit having booked the room I became a little concerned reading one or two of the reviews. Concerns unfounded , yes the hotel needs a certain amount of renovation , this will be some job though as it is a large old building, our room was clean ,well equipped and breakfast was excellent. All members of staff we dealt with were very pleasant and professional. We will certainly stay again and further enjoy the offerings of Ilkley

27/05/2018

Very impressive building. Room was okay but didn't like the extension and 4 way adapter. Would have thought they could run to an electrician and have proper points. Breakfast Friday morning was ' Yorkshire'; 1 small piece of bacon, 1 sausage, 1 egg, 1 hash brown, 1/2 tomato, 1 flat mushroom - loadsa beans. Saturday we had continental as there was plenty to have. Sunday was buffet style which was much better ( it was explained that they do this when there are more than a certain number of guests but I think they should make it standard)

"Not the best."

2
24/05/2018

The hotel needs a real good clean and updating. Not enough power points in the room and the rooms have an external RCD switch, meaning that the power can be turned off (deliberately or accidentally) from the corridor. This meant that we could not work out how to turn the TV on and it took four members of staff to work this one out. The central heating is apparently on 24 hours a day which, even with the window open in May, is unacceptable. Breakfast was served in a larger room than normal with no air conditioning. Fortunately, on one morning, someone had the foresight to open an external door. Finally PAT Testing labels on all of the appliances in the room showed that the test was due on 8 March 2018, when the day we were there was 19 May.

"Good service, room needs improving."

18/05/2018

Hats off to the staff who were all excellent, although had we known what our room was going to be like, we would not have stayed. It desperately needs a complete make-over. The hotel location is good, a short walk into Ilkley and not far from the Moor. A reasonable breakfast. but we didn't have dinner as the dining room looked a bit austere and Ilkley has some lovely restaurants.

We recently held the MGA Register Spring Event at the Craiglands. The staff were excellent and worked so hard to make this weekend a success. Rooms were clean and comfortable. As we took all the rooms for the group some were better than others but that was to be expected. Great admiration for the chef, the food was exceptional particularly as he was catering for large numbers. The manager went out of his way to accommodate all our requirements. Thank you!

"Afternoon tea"

3
17/05/2018

As a present we were bought vouchers for afternoon tea at the Craiglands Hotel. I was looking forward to some delicious fillings in the sandwiches along with scones and cakes. What a disappointment, the fillings in the sandwiches were cheese and pickle, ham and beef. Where were the smoked salmon and prawns? Not even tuna! The scones were warm and very tasty but I'm sure it wasn't clotted cream as advertised. The small cakes were OK but nothing special! Tea again was OK but we weren't offered any flavoured tea not even Earl Grey and no pot of hot water. Maybe the staff need a visit that very famous tea shop just down the road from them to get some tips from them. I was just disappointed that the people who gave us the vouchers had wasted their money. It was a lot of money for something that was not very special.

"Annual Classic Car Tour"

16/05/2018

Our room was on the first floor at the side of the hotel, overlooking the garden. Very clean, tea/coffee making facilities, iron & board, hairdryer, safe, wardrobe. Bathroom a tad on the small size but adequate & very clean. Clean towels provided every day. Breakfast was standard buffet style, plenty of everything, the only let down was no choice of eggs, just scrambled. Mini Danish, Croissants, variety of cereals, yoghurt, fruit, toast, jams on tables. Bar, 2/3 Ballrooms and other areas for relaxing. The hotel appears to be undergoing some refurbishment, as some areas looked a little 'tired'. Young staff, who were friendly and helpful, I asked for coffee with hot milk, no problem! My only gripe was with my evening meal on the two nights, my salmon was very small, more tail end than a filet! And my white fish filo parcel, I had a job to find the fish! Chef needs to be given a bigger budget! All in all though, would visit again.

"Disappointing "

2
11/05/2018

I attended a function and the room itself was adequate, but the food was just average at best but the service for a ball was woeful. It wasn't the servers fault there just weren't enough of them and therefore the food was just warm as it arrived out. The ops manager/maitre'D couldn't get things moving and took well over two hours for quite a poor meal to be served. The drinks are pricy almost £5 a pint and no draft ale available at all other than bargain basement John smiths and no draft Guinness either. Also two other functions were going on at the same time as ours and one was totally incompatible with the other two. So with shared bathrooms between the functions and the outside space being limited, the view of very drunk youngsters throwing up everywhere and swearing/shouting loudly was a really poor advert for the hotel. Just glad I wasn't staying the night.

"Wedding Celebration"

10/05/2018

We had the absolute best day ever on Saturday at our Wedding Celebration party at The Craiglands Hotel!! They really do have an amazing team there and everyone went out of our way to make sure us and our 150 guests were looked after. The food was gorgeous and the chef was fantastic for accommodating everyone's dietary requirements!! Special thanks to Rachael who looked after us on Saturday – she was amazing and made everything run perfectly. Nothing was too much trouble. Also Maj was fantastic too, and all of the bar staff – well just everyone really who was working over the weekend was brilliant!! I can't thank you all enough. Also thanks to Kirsty and Shannen too for all their help with the booking of the rooms for our party and with my various random questions. We stayed in one of the bridal suites which was lovely - with lots of space to get ready and the breakfast was really good too. I would definitely recommend the hotel to anyone wanting to plan a wedding or event - the guys are great to work with, the food and service is great and Ilkley is gorgeous - but I am slightly biased as it is my home town! :)

The grounds have disappeared, sold off for housing. The front is a bland, tiered, unappealing car park. Situated up a hill if walking is in any way difficult, this is not the hotel for you. Reception staff are wonderful and breakfast was fine. Dinner saw just lumps of carrots and swede as the vegetable but the haddock was good. Room OK but no wow factor. Preferred Otley on the way home to Ilkley.

9 of us booked ages ago for first night of Dales Way (only hotel in Ilkley that would take us for one night) and then was told there was a tribute band on the same night. After a lot of phone calls We asked for quiet rooms.....so when we arrived some of the twin rooms were still doubles and one room was in earshot of the band. We had a double bed and sofa bed which is hardly a twin room. No drinking water! Other rooms did! Average breakfast, in fact the poorest we had wn route. Poor show and and a shabby hotel.

"Great food, overpriced beer and noisy room above a wedding reception."

4
29/04/2018

Came here for a colleagues wedding reception and booked and paid well in advance for the room. The room itself was well appointed though slightly dark and with one radiator wasn't too warm, this was fine for me but my partner likes to be warmer. The bathroom was lovely and there was plenty of tea and coffee. The only problem was when we retired from the reception at 10.30 as I wasn't feeling to good we realised we had been put directly above the wedding reception room and it was vibrating with the heavy base and the noise of the revellers! This meant we didn't actually get to sleep until after midnight when the reception finished. I would have thought we would have been given a decent room away from the noise as we booked and paid way in advance but no we were given one of possibly 4 worst rooms in the hotel. The bar has really slow waiters who don't seem to care for their jobs and the prices are extautionate with a fosters, bottle of peroni and a double archers and lemonade coming in at around £17!!!!! One really good thing about the hotel is the cooked breakfasts are fantastic and the best we have had either here or abroad, the bacon and sausages are delicious and all the food even though it's buffet style is piping hot - this is not to be missed.

"An old hotel and a bit tired in places"

3
22/04/2018

This hotel is not too far from the town centre at about a 10 minute walk (20 minutes back up the hill). It is a very old building so floor boards tend to squeak (especially next to our bed) and as our bedroom walls were painted a dark brown the room seem dark and gloomy (particularly as it had a small window and was to the rear of the hotel in a depression). The bathroom was also a bit dated having some of the original fittings. The continental breakfast option was a bit sparse in variety and the cheese was in small shrunk wrap plastic sleeving (and pretty tasteless). The mushrooms on the main breakfast obviously came out of a tin, however overall the breakfast was pretty good.

"Took a group of 8 golfers here for a 2 night break"

20/04/2018

All members of our group were VERY satisfied with their rooms. One minor detail - this is an old building, so some of the floors creak. Did not worry any of us, but should be born in mind. Sleep quality below would have been 5-star apart from this. The breakfasts were good. Good buffet style.for all except cooked part which was done to order. We had dinner on 1 night which was 'reasonable' The service was excellent. One bit we did not like was the price of drinks (even by restaurant standards this was a bit expensive). Liked the solid nature of this old building. The steps up (from what I gather is the new car park) are very steep, but there is no problem dropping off passengers / luggage outside the main door.

"Mid week break"

14/04/2018

We have just done a groupon deal to this wonderful hotel the reception was warm and welcoming the room 124 was warm clean and comfortable with plenty of storage the shower was good and simple to use the room over looked the garden.the dinner which was included on the first night was choice of starter and main we both had Yorkshire puddings followed by rump steak which was very good.the breakfast which was served to you on both mornings was first class the hotel is 10minutes walk up cowpasture hill from the bus and railway stations the hotel is very close to the moors and river where you can do many walks.if I could find a fault with the hotel to improve on it would be the dinner at night most hotels let you have a choice of two courses from the starters mains and dessert but that's the only gripe I've enclosed some photos of the hotel

"Fine - but overpriced"

3
06/04/2018

This hotel was fine with a nice location and grand communal areas. However for this price I would have expected a much higher standard of breakfast. The scrambled egg clearly came from a packet, the grilled tomatoes were not grilled for long enough, hot drinks were not served but had to be got from a machine etc etc.

"Quick Easter Getaway"

03/04/2018

Stayed here over the Easter weekend on a DBB break. The hotel was very clean and tidy, in public areas and in the bedroom. Staff were really friendly and accommodating, I would recommend a stay here, we could have easily done another night.

"Average stay for what used to be a great hotel"

3
02/04/2018

We stayed one night for £110 as a family of two adults, two children (8&4) and a baby. We brought our own travel cot. We were initially disappointed to see that the hotel grounds had been spoilt by some construction work building houses and the conversion of what used to be beautiful gardens at the bottom of those lovely stone steps into what is now a car park with an ugly huge concrete reinforced wall. This wall could look so much better with a simple grass wall feature to hide it. The car park is still stone chips and is not easy to walk on with bags to carry, no smooth walkway or link through so no good for pushchairs or heels! As far as first impressions go, the car park scores nil! So what did we expect for £110? We wrongly thought breakfast was included but were happy to pay extra if not. Until we learnt that it was going to be £10 per person (if we paid at time of checking in or £12.50 in the morning). We asked if the price was the same for children, bearing in mind I knew my 4 year old would have Weetabix and milk only. Sadly, yes the chef apparently would not allow a reduction in price for children. Same price applied. So that would have been £40 for breakfast. Shame we had that reply because The Wheatley Arms down the road then got our business and we spent a further five hours sat eating and drinking there! We stay in hotels regularly and don't expect something for nothing but this lack of understanding about what families need, has determined that we probably won't book to stay again. The plus sides are definitely the polite reception lady, the huge family room which was immaculately clean and the hotel generally was presented as clean and tidy. The ball room didn't look to have changed in the last 15 years, in a good way. It is a great room for a big party! The extension on the right of the hotel needs a new facade as it spoils the overall look of what is otherwise a beautiful building.

02/04/2018

We booked here as we were attending a wedding reception. We booked 3 rooms, 1 for us, 1 for our daughter and her family and 1 for our son and his wife, we had their son in with us as he was the best man. Our room was ok, it was lovely and warm and would have been ok for the 2 nights we were booked in for. When I went to get ready I ran the water in the sink to get it warm and the sink filled up, I can hear you saying that is what sinks do and yes I agree, but, you have to put a plug in usually! We then did the same in the bath, yes you've guessed, drainage problem! No worries we've got 2 other rooms to use. We rung reception to inform them of the problem and to their credit they did come up to sort the problem out. We went to the wedding and the manager came and told us that the problem was solved. We had a lovely evening and then grandson in tow went to bed. I ran the water in the sink to get it warm for a wash and, yes you've guessed, problem not solved! We rang reception to report and went to bed. Sunday morning, grandson asked for a bath, I had a shower, didn't need a plug! Manager came up and an hour and a half later bath and sink still full. We packed our bags up and went out for the day with our family. On our return we had been moved to another room, where the drains worked, the room was warm, the bed comfy an all together better room. The staff are lovely, the breakfasts are delicious and the room to avoid is 127. We had a lovely time but the problems did make it a little stressful and if we hadn't had access to other facilities I don't know what they would have done as the hotel was apparently full!

I have firstly to say all the staff at the Hotel were really lovely and welcoming Dinner was a very poor experience Frozen Vegetables with passable pork The Pudding was a disaster we chose a pavlova which was a cheep shop bought merangue filled with frozen fruit which was still frozen with no cream The room was OK but radiator wouldn't turn off so either boiled or froze with window open Shower was broken Breakfast was a much better experience good hot food The staff I can only say again were lovely not their fault at all

"Mothers day treat"

14/03/2018

My daughter took me for a meal and overnight stay last Saturday as a Mothers day treat. We had a lovely afternoon looking round Ilkley, then back to the hotel . From checking in until leaving the staff were lovely. Very friendly and obliging. Rachel Served us in the bar, and in the dining room. Very efficient but still had time to have a chat and a laugh with us. I had read on some other reviews that it was cold in the hotel, not so !!!!! It was warm in any part of the hotel, The room was pleasant and the bed one of the comfiest hotel beds I have ever slept in. There was plenty of tea and coffee etc in the room , unlike some other hotels where you get 2 or 3 of each. Both the evening meal and the breakfast next morning was perfect, Really cant fault them at all. Would recommend this hotel, and would definitely stay again. Thank you for a lovely stay.

"Worst best Western"

1
04/03/2018

We usually highly rate best Western: we are even getting married at one in June. Thank God it isnt this one. 1. We arrived on Friday to a cold, small bedroom with a poky bedroom. We were told it would have a bath but there wasn't one. We had paid 200 for two nights and his was discounted. 2. We received an upgrade after complaining and discussing with reception and this room was much better but still cold. 3. At 8.45 there was no water hot or cold or electric. We hoped to arrange food but the kitchen had closed?? So we decided to tesco for some sandwiches: not what I had in mind for my fiancée's romantic birthday getaway....3. electric periodically on and off but no water and we used bottled water to clean our teeth...reception said they'd let us know what was going on but never actually did. 4. Breakfast in the morning we sat down and asked for a cooked breakfast and tea and coffee. We asked four times for the hot water we requested. I was told we ordered hash browns when we didn't. I felt very sorry for the young staff who were overworked and understaffed with no help from management. 5. Went back to room and the card was already locked off at 10.40. 6. We went to leave and listed the above we were told it was not their fault as the power cut was due to the bad wether. I'm a very reasonable person and a simple apology and some communication throughout would have been fine but the attitude was shocking. In front of others they even highlighted how the poor experience was OK because we had purchased at a discounted rate via a voucher service living social! We felt humiliated and disappointed. I just wanted to make my fiancee happy this weekend and unfortunately she came away feeling angry and humiliated. I've never complained before or left a negative comment but I really hope that nobody else has to experience this.

"A Victorian Hotel handy for Ilkley Moor"

4
20/02/2018

Craiglands is part way from the town to the Cow and Calf Rocks. It is in an ideal location for walkers planning a route on the moor. It is a Victorian hotel built in the 1850's as a spa. It is mainly in good condition though a few places in the public areas could do with some attention, particularly the lift. Our room was comfortable with a shower cubicle and a decent sized flat screen TV. The heating although old style radiators worked OK which was important as it snowed while we were there.

18/02/2018

A great night - went to a charity fund raiser event for help4homeless veterans - on arrival at the hotel, there is quite a lot of work being carried out with scaffolding which I always think is a good thing since it means they are investing in the upkeep- parking wasn't a problem and easy access to the hotel - the event took place in the St. Bernard's ballroom of the Craiglands Hotel - which looked superb in decor and set up for the evening. The food was very efficiently brought out and delivered by all staff in a kind and courteous fashion. No delays and no gripes with the food at all considering they were catering for over 100 people. The bar was probably a little on the expensive side but then again it's a Hotel. The desserts followed and were equally very good. We were then treated to some excellent entertainment by the hotel's big band - The Kalamazoo Dance Band, they were outstanding and their stage presence was very impressive - plenty of room to dance and the room was large enough to mingle with guests and not worry about being in anyone's way. Staff were attentive throughout the evening bringing drinks to the table etc. Overall a first class evening and I'd certainly be interested in going back for more functions eg Tea Dances - well done all

"Don't have your wedding here!"

1
18/02/2018

It breaks my heart to leave this review as my wedding day was excellent. It was just all the unnecessary stress before and after the big day. There were numerous changes to the original contract, lots of “if you still want this you have to pay extra” when we had already agreed with the previous wedding planner even things as trivial as an extra £20 for an additional room when we had an invoice to say was complimentary. We had 90 day guests and 120 evening, the hotel was fully booked on the evening, so the revenue they received from our wedding was worth while, especially as we booked the ballroom which came with a minimum spend. The issues we have got do not lie with Harriet (events manager) as she has been good. It is the downright rudeness, organisation and and aggressiveness of the general management. On the night of the wedding we were told we could have a DJ until 1230, with the music winding down from 12. At bang on 12 when people were still enjoying themselves the general manager Khem went up to the DJ and told him to stop, cutting the celebrations short and confusing people. I had paid the DJ until 1230 on the hotels instruction so if I'd have known I would have only paid until 12. A few guests then went to the “24 hour” residents bar for a night cap and chat only for Khem to come along and tell them to order one more drink before pulling the shutters down and closing the bar. The rooms were freezing cold, we could see our breath in the air when lying in bed (bit of a passion killer on our wedding night) so much so that my husbands grandad suffered a heart attack in the early hours due to being so cold. Upon asking the man behind reception to urgently call an ambulance he asked “what's the number?” He was also asked to call my husbands parents room which he said he would but 20 minutes later he still hadn't done this. His grandad was in hospital for 8 days before going home. Upon feeding back to the hotel Harriet was very attentive and was honest in admitting the night porter was overwhelmed and didn't know what to do, and sufficient training had been carried out to make sure this doesn't happen again. The heating was also altered in the rooms which was sufficient for me. The absolute final straw and what really hurts is the venue dressing. In April this year we asked Harriet if she planned to have the gold ceiling drapes you will see in all the recent pictures for the Xmas and new year period, because I wanted these up for the wedding and was willing to split the cost with the hotel. Harriet said categorically not as they didn't have the budget. If we wanted them we would have to pay £300 to put them up and £300 to have them taken down (£600 total) we paid this, it was a massive stretch to us but we loved them. The hotel have since decided they did actually want to keep them for the Xmas and new year which they have done, plus other people's weddings. When I questioned with the venue dresser why they hadn't been taken down (as per our contact) he said he had come to a separate arrangement with the hotel to keep them up and they had made a deal. The hotel knew what a stretch and what sacrifices we made to have these and after giving them lots of revenue on the day they have capitalised further. When asking for a 50% reimbursement for services not rendered again the general manager was rude, lying, aggressive, and contracting himself saying the venue dresser hadn't been back to take them. Really? 2 months later? I feel they have completely taken the P*** and I had a feeling they would do this. I feel I have paid toward the entertainment and dressing for all the craiglands parties all Xmas and new year, and they knew it. All this hotel have wanted to do is make money, and they clearly don't spend this on the heating bill! Approach general manager with caution guys

"Afternoon Tea"

1
11/02/2018

I visited the hotel for afternoon tea which was purchased through Groupon for my 75 year old Mum as a gift. The Hotel is set in lovely surroundings and the young lady that served us was sweet and helpful, however the food was dire! The young lady brought out the food into an area where there was no atmosphere it was bare and cold. We asked for the food after we had had a glass of Prossecco as we sat by a window with a view - it was brought out and immediately placed on the table already set up and left there to dry out and for the tea to go cold. The sandwiches were dry and unimaginative, cheese and egg and the scones were stale and very dry. How disappointing when this was a treat and a gift for my lovely Mum. I would never contemplate returning here the standards were very poor.

A very warm welcome and we didn't find the hotel cold at all. The room was nice and comfortable. The only complaint was lack of power sockets. There is only one for the tv and one for alarm clock so to charge phones etc it was a challenge. We ate in the restaurant on the first night and we were the only people in, perhaps the rest of the visitors had visited before. The food was ok but why spoil a good meal with frozen chips?? how long does it take to cook real chips. Please stop using these tasteless chips. Breakfast very nice with piping hot well cooked food.We would love to come back as the hotel is in a lovely setting but will find somewhere else to eat dinner.

Room smelled like sweat. Only one power socket available on the far side of the room to the bed (and to use it had to unplug the alarm clock). Ate in the "bistro" but service was very slow and the food not great. Soulless and very quiet dining room. Tried room service, again slow service (over an hour) and poor food. Would not recommend, and if you do stay then eat elsewhere!

First the good. Lovely hotel, nice friendly staff. Lovely and clean, good location. Two issues I had were noise. It is an old building and I accept it will have its quirks. But the noisy floorboards... Wow. They squeak a lot. Was woken up by people in other rooms at 7 am two days in a row and then the loud door slam. Not nice when hoping for a lay in. Really is the only thing stopping me saying I'd stay again. Also the car park isn't well sign posted but that is just nitpicking

We stayed last night after a wedding party and were quite happy with both the venue and room. Even thought it is mid January and very cold outside the temperature in the key areas was fine. Some of the corridors were a little chilly but nothing to moan about. The main bar was very cosy helped by the real fire which was kept stoked up throughout the day. Thanks. Drinks are on the expensive side but in line with hotel prices today. The bar staff are excellent and attentive. The wedding "breakfast" (served at 15.30) was a substantial meal and of good quality. There were about 50 of us and under the expert guidance of Khem the General Manger was served quickly and easily. The room was large with a very comfortable bed. The bathroom looks to have been modernised recently with good quality fittings. The hot water did take a couple of minutes to arrive but once it did it was hot and of adequate pressure. All in all a great stay for the money. I`ve seen average B&Bs costing more. Thanks Khem for a wonderful day.

02/01/2018

We attended a wedding in Ilkley and had to arrange accommodation quite last minute and were a bit apprehensive about staying here after reading the reviews, especially the fact that it was December and the hotel was apparently quite cold. We found quite the opposite the room was toasty warm with good radiator, and general heating. There was also a bath, tea and coffee facilities provided. The bed was big and comfy, the wifi strong, and good range of channels on the TV. The only criticism would be a general lack of plug sockets, and the corridors etc generally felt a bit dated, but otherwise we found this a perfect place to stay in walking distance of some really nice restaurants and less than half a mile from the train station.

"brilliant boxing day meal"

30/12/2017

I never write reviews on hotels/restaurants but after a brilliant boxing day meal I felt compelled to write one for the Craiglands in Ikley. My family and I went here for Boxing Day lunch - the reviews we read were mixed but the price was good and they could accommodate our large party. The bottom line here is that yes the hotel is a little tired and old fashioned....BUT the service we received and the food we ate was fantastic. We couldn't fault it at all. We had a group of mixed ages - ranging from 1 - 70. The staff were amazing - very friendly and efficient - they couldn't do enough for us. They brought us extra gravy/Yorkshire puddings/anything we asked for and were lovely with the children. The roast beef was probably the best roast beef I've ever had. It was so refreshing to be somewhere a bit more traditional and where the focus was on quality of food and the service rather than a fancy building/'gastro' setting. Thank you to all the lovely staff who looked after us on the day, we will definitely be back! The Penketh/Stanton/Whitley families.

"Great wedding venue but less good staying there"

3
29/12/2017

Firstly as a wedding venue Craiglands seemed great (at least from a guest perspective). Lovely main ball room with additional spill out lounge and pre dinner private bar area. Great space for a winter wedding indoors. Food and service was very good and we all had a great time. The building is also impressive and historic adding to the atmosphere. In terms of staying there, the rooms were under heated and the fan heater provided was essential. Also we couldn't get any hot water from our shower and had to get the night manager to attend for 20 mins before any hot could be found. Friends were having similar problems. Bathrooms badly needed renovating. The rooms as the back of the hotel are not well sound proofed and we could hear neighbours talking not to mention the music from the wedding thumping in. As we were with the wedding we didn't mind but if you weren't you definitely needed to be at the front of the hotel where it was quiet. Staff were helpful and responsive throughout but the heating an plumbing and bathrooms badly need some money spending.

Stayed on a Saturday night in December during a cold spell. Thought at the time that the reception area was unusually cold as this is the area kept warm and cosy by most hotel chains. After a Christmas party we arrived back to find the halls cold and the room colder. This was made worse by an unheated tiled floor in the bathroom. Mentioned it in the morning and was asked if we rang down to request fan heaters !? No we had not, Neither did we expect to. On arrival at the breakfast room we were told that we were down as Room Only, this despite replying to emails offering a breakfast deal and after they had been overlooked, booking breakfast on arrival. We left and went to Betty's Tea Rooms. We will not be returning. I have stayed in better hotels in London for less money. This place need an upgrade and an attitude readjustment.

We have stayed at Craiglands on a number of occasions - all our stays have been very good! The Winter offer of bed and breakfast at less than £60 for a couple is great value. "Best Western MINUS"

16/12/2017

We visited here a few years ago and had a very cold stay. We came again as the hotel is in a very nice area with good views and with the assurance that it was now under the supervision of Best Western who had designated it as a 'plus' hotel. All staff friendly and welcoming. Lift out of order STILL (see other reviews) Room clean and well fitted with wardrobes etc. Door handle on bathroom door hanging off. Curtain hanging off No heating in bathroom - 'heated towel rail' was cold even though fully 'on' Hot water in bath and in handbasin did not reach bloodheat even though allowed to run for two or three minutes (as advised in guest directory) All problems reported either on arrival or after the first nights stay - none of them fixed and no apology or recompense. Food adequate but unexciting - we decided to eat in the town!

Lift was out of order, the food appeared to be catered by the NHS, toilet didn't flush properly, the tatty and apparently homemade curtains weren't wide enough to close so there was about a one-foot-wide strip open letting in light from the street lamp all night. You can hear absolutely every move and every word anywhere in the hotel and the floorboards are deafening. Good-sized rooms but the hotel really needs some TLC.

Stayed for 1 night on business didn't eat in the restaurant so cant comment the staff were friendly the hotel was clean and tidy the room large and warm. Overall the hotel looked a little tired but it did what it said on the sign with no frills. Breakfast was very good.

This is stupid. I have already stated our problems i.e. Cold rooms, bar not manned, overcharging on two items e.g. charged for breakfast and for two daily Telegraphs on two occasions. What was the use of completing the review an d then being asked to list them again.

"Faded grandeur."

3
05/12/2017

For as long as I can remember – which is now quite a long time – Craiglands has been Ilkley's premier hotel. Well, since the Ilkley Moor burned down in 1968 anyway (what a night THAT was). I remember being an usher at a wedding reception at Craiglands in 1970 something. So with a concert in Ilkley there was nowhere else to go. Bit of a shock on arrival was a huge sign saying “Hollywood” draped over the entrance– what's that all about? On a Monday we were the only guests at Reception or, later, the bar. There was one other guest at breakfast so there was no atmosphere. As you entered you felt you had stepped back into a bygone era of faded grandeur. Gone is the (I remember) rather fine dining room as there is now a ‘brasserie' and a bar – we did not dine in. The lift was broken and various bits in our room were falling off – the bathroom lock for one. On to the positive. The staff members we met were excellent. The lady who was looking after the bar was pleasantly chatty to us, her only customers. The bed was comfy, the temperature just fine, and the bathroom recently done out with lots of nice toiletries. The superb breakfast arrived at high speed.

"Good location"

Quiet location for a good nights sleep and a short walk to town. Friendly staff on reception and room was all we needed for 1 nights stay. Nice bathroom and tea and coffee tray in room. Would stay here again. We walked into the town for breakfast the next day so cannot comment on that.

"Christmas pudding run"

04/12/2017

Just got back from a weekend stay at the graiglands hotel. Prior to our visit we were contacted by one of the female staff to inform us that the lifts were out of service for the duration of the stay. A lovely gesture, we were appreciative of the gesture as I have difficulty going up and down the stairs. For warned is ensuring I new what I had to negotiate. Our car club was holding it's Christmas pudding run on which we started the run provided by the hotel before members set off was a tea or coffee with hot mince pies. After the run was completed we had a lovely 3 course meal provided the hotel. The only downside to the stay was our room was cold as one radiator was out of action. When I reported it to the reception they provided a lovely fan heated. That helped immensely. It is a old hotel but, the rooms are clean( compliments to the house keeping service), and comfortable. We will be back in July for our Yorkshire pudding run.

"Lovely place"

I am seriously upset by some of the other reviews written and believe that if you want ‘all mod cons' then you should go and stay at the Travelodge in Leeds - I did this last week and know exactly where I would rather be! The Craiglands is an old hotel; it is beautifully situated in a residential area within walking distance of Ilkley. That means firstly, it is quiet. That is quite important to me if I want a decent night's sleep. Secondly, the bed in room 124 is comfortable and cosy -one of the best I have stayed in. There are plenty of pillows which are also comfortable. Yes, the bathroom is a little on the small side - but who wants to party in the bathroom?! It does what it says on the tin. There is a guest folder which quite clearly states that the hotel is old and so the hot water system might be a little temperamental. Solutions are provided and, personally, I don't care if I have to wait a few minutes for the hot water to work its way to my shower, as long as once it arrives it is hot - it was. As with any old building, the windows are not like they would be in a soulless, modern establishment, but the heating is on a timer and when it comes on, it is toasty. There is good tv reception, good internet reception and friendly staff. I didn't eat at the hotel, so can't comment on the quality of food, and do agree with some other reviewers that there is a ‘food' smell, but perhaps this is being dealt with in the refurbishment programme. I worry for places like the Craiglands - especially when they get poor reviews. It can put people off going there and then it is a slippery, downhill slope. All I can say is that I have stayed in many hotels and this is up there with some of the best - and I do have quite high standards. It is clean, quiet and comfortable with an olde worlde feel, in beautiful grounds and yet within 10 minutes walking distance of Ilkley and all its wonderful shops. Don't be put off. If you value and appreciate old buildings, and don't mind putting up with a few, less modern aspects, this is your place. If not, don't go there and write bad reviews based on your 21st century expectations.

"A grand hotel in need of updating but with comfortable rooms "

22/11/2017

Stayed here with several relatives last Friday. This is a big hotel which is being refurbished by Best Western. Most rooms are very comfortable and clean. However, one of our party was initially in a room which had only been painted very recently and had an unpleasant ‘paint' smell. The management were very helpful and quickly offered another room. There was a musty cooking smell in most of the corridors and in particular the stair wells. My room (124) was comfortable but the bathroom was ridiculously small. You could only just get one person in ! The main bar is a large room with plenty of chairs and tables but few wall decorations, giving it an unwelcome feeling. The bar staff were polite and helpful but a poor selection of beers. Not one decent draught ale , just uninspiring keg beers and lager. Nonetheless, a good selection of spirits. Breakfast was an OK buffet, designed for lots of guests. I was slightly surprised that this is a Best Western hotel. Their standard is generally much higher than this. I can only imagine that the whole place is undergoing refurbishment.

"Very bad expierence"

19/11/2017

Stayed for a family wedding. So at a wedding you generally want to buy drinks from the bar and just suck up the inflated prices. Not at this hotel! You couldn't give them money. First bar staff stated wedding guests couldn't use it. Next bar had one member of staff. Got sent to another bar staff said sorry you need to use the other bar. Then seen staff just pour singles and charge for double. Staff where not friendly and very rude. Hotel is very badly dated and does not reflect the rates they charge. Would no stay in this hotel again and seriously advise anyone having any form of special occasion to seriously avoid this hotel.

"Could be so good"

17/11/2017

Craiglands Hotel has all of the potential to become a great hotel. Steeped in history, beautiful views, the wonderful town of Ilkley within easy walking distance........but sadly it is just the staff working here that are holding it together. The building is tired and the bedrooms need updating with a thorough overhaul. The room we had (206) was pretty poor. The white wardrobe was dirty and the knobs were falling off. The room lacked plug sockets. The heating could not be controlled, if you wanted the room to be cooler the window had to stay open (which being November and raining, it was not ideal). We noted the bar area and gave it a miss as it looked uninspiring and lacked any local draught beers/ales. We did not have lunch or dinner at the hotel so cannot comment but I would say that during the three days at the hotel we only saw one couple eating during the evening. My goodness, they have a captive audience and a real opportunity to make the restaurant a bit special which does not seem to have been taken advantage of. The breakfast at the weekend is buffet style (English & Continental) so you could help yourself to whatever you wanted. The produce used was not particularly good and yet again looked like it came from the local cash and carry. Mushrooms looked like they came from a tin.....seriously that is not good. During the week the breakfast is waitress service. You are served with the items you have requested and the portions are small. Half a small slice of black pudding, small ramekin of baked beans, tinned mushrooms, overcooked sausage, watery scrambled eggs, half an overcooked tomato. Only decent item was the poached egg. The package we had was a 'winter sale' which included breakfast. If we had to pay for it (which I believe is £10/£12) I think we would have given it a miss after one day and eaten brunch later in the town. The staff are lovely and helpful and I sincerely hope the hotel 'pulls it socks up' as it could be really great. Just one other thing.....when we checked in we were advised that £50.00 would be taken from our card each day to cover any extras that may be ordered during our stay - we had never heard of this before and advised we would not be happy with this and if we wanted anything would pay for it there and then. What an odd request

Wonky creaking floors Draughts that are suited to wind tunnel testing Bathroom lights flicker bright and dim constantly TV has pretty much all smart settings disabled Internet cuts out every second Receptionist asked us multiple times regarding eating here or tab, to the point of embarrassment Car park signed terribly Dated as hell Bathroom so cold your knob would disappear if you showered I will avoid in future

"So cold"

2
14/11/2017

Arrived at the hotel at 4pm, signage to the car park very poor, I was fortunate it was still light, It would have been difficult to find the car park in the dark. Check in and the public areas were fine. My room was on the 1st floor, through a white door off the landing. I opened this door and the cold hit me. The radiator in the bedroom was Luke warm, the towel rail in the bathroom wasn't working. I called reception to ask for an additional heater and was told the heating is on a timer, they agreed to bring a heater, it didn't arrive. I went for Dinner and back to the room, it was still freezing, so cold I hardly slept, I had to use my coat on top of the duvet. I tried the shower next morning the water was luke warm, so I was unable to have a shower. Breakfast was poor, cheap ingredients, I was surprised to get only 1 rasher of bacon, had I paid for the breakfast it would have been £12.50. The staff are the saving grace of this hotel, all very friendly. I guess they didn't have an extra heater on the premises,

"Disappointing Event"

2
11/11/2017

Please check the arrangements for your events very carefully before the event because this hotel believes it is perfectly acceptable to change what you have booked and paid for if it so chooses. Communication between those taking the booking and those providing the service on the day is poor. Staff at the event lacked basic customer service skills and provided a below average service. Having expressed our disappointment at the changed arrangements with the Events Co-ordinator. The response we received was pathetic and laughable. Will be going elsewhere for the next family gathering.

"Dated bathroom and disgusting breakfast"

2
07/11/2017

An overall very disappointing experience. Bathroom was hugely dated - shower head wouldn't point downwards and couldn't be adjusted, the water from the shower was tepid (barely warm) for both nights we stayed, despite being on the highest temperature setting. There was a shower curtain, which I can't emphasis enough how disgusting and unhygienic I find this. The duvet was lumpy and thin, and the pillows were cheap & flat - with no spare pillows or blankets in the wardrobe. There was no temperature control in the room, so we couldn't adjust the heating, nor did the bathroom radiator work, so we were freezing during the night. We had breakfast on the first morning to try it out - glad we hadn't booked in for a second, because it isn't worth the £10 per head fee. The waitress was highly unorganised and inefficient. She said she 'didn't think they offered hot chocolate' even though it was on the menu - and she didn't even go and check, so I didn't have a hot drink. She returned because she forgot my husband's drink order (one order), and had trouble comprehending our breakfast order of 2 full English breakfasts. The breakfast was inedible and used cheaply bought products. Not what I would expect. There are only two options - the full English, and continental. The English breakfast was underwhelming, and I couldn't eat any of it - watery, colourless scrambled eggs that looked as though they had been mashed, one fatty sausage, one tough overcooked rasher of bacon, watery baked beans, and half a piece of dry black pudding. We found the continental selection of food equally poor and disappointing as well. I would expect fresh locally sourced eggs, fresh orange juice not from concentrate, a large selection of warm pastries, local/butcher's sausages etc, glass jugs of chilled juices and water... Instead the milk jug spout was going green, and everything just felt like it had been cost-cut/ grabbed from a the basics aisle in Tesco in some trolley-dash in an attempt to purchase a morning's worth of breakfast for less than a fiver. Additionally, other hotel guests arrived for breakfast still wearing pyjamas and with bare feet which I found highly inappropriate and off-putting, In all a disappointing experience - cold room, cold shower, and a sad-looking, overcooked breakfast.

We attended the recent Halloween ball at this stunning hotel. The staff had gone to such a lot of effort to make sure everyone had a spooky time. The room was perfect, the food was delicious and the staff were very friendly and helpful. We also stayed over which was also a wonderful experience too. I would definitely recommend this hotel which is in such a gorgeous setting. Thank you to Clare, Harriet and all at the Craiglands for another amazing time. Julie and John Trigg

"Good value for money via Groupon!"

4
05/11/2017

My wife found a Groupon deal for this hotel which worked out to be very good value... two nights B&B with a two course evening meal on the first night for two people all for just £139! We stayed midweek and the hotel didn't have any functions on and was subsequently very quiet, eerily quiet in fact! On arrival we found the car park at the front of the hotel was massive and only had four cars on it for the duration of our 2 night stay. Reception was friendly and trouble free and we were allocated Room 106; I don't know why, but I always think if we use a voucher like Groupon or something similar we'll end up with an inferior room... wrong! Room 106 wasn't big but it had obviously been recently refurbished and the bathroom was really nice! The all important shower worked well although it did take a few minutes for the hot water to appear. The double bed was comfy and the room was very warm with a double wardrobe, writing desk and chair and a large wall mounted flat-screen TV. The evening meal menu was limited but in view of the fact that we were two of the four people dining in the hotel it was more than acceptable and the quality was good. Breakfast on both mornings was also good with a 'help yourself' selection of cereals, toast, croissant and juice etc... followed by a waiter served cooked breakfast. In summary, the hotel has no atmosphere midweek and is very quiet which we considered a good thing, the service, staff and food were all good and the town which is only a 10 minute walk has a lot to offer with regards to dining out which we did on the second night of our stay. I would recommend staying here but maybe not when there is a function on due to what other reviewers have said!

""Executive family room""

2
04/11/2017

How you can call the room we're in 'executive' I don't know. Its a small room with a little put up bed crammed in by the window. And why on earth you would place a family above the wedding disco is beyond me. The music is so loud the beds are vibrating, so my 8 year old daughter is now still lying awake in bed at 11.50pm desperately waiting for the music to go off at 12.

"Ilkley Walking Holiday"

3
04/11/2017

The Craiglands Hotel is very well located on the edge of Ilkley Moor in Warfedale, Yorkshire. The views from our room across the Warfe Valley were great. On arrival the welcome was friendly and our luggage was taken to our room was great as we were on the second floor and the lift was out of order! Our room was quite large with a bay window, a bath with shower over and a comfortable bed. We went to the bar for a lunch. No one available so had to return to reception to ask for some help. This was soon attended to and our meal was delivered quickly. Very nice food. We spent the afternoon exploring Ilkley, about 1km downhill from the hotel! Nice shops and many restaurants. Back at the hotel we thought a hot bath would be great BUT no hot water or any heating at all so called reception. The hotel duty manager arrived and confirmed that there was no hot water or heating, the lack of heating was due to the heating system being controlled by a timer set for 17:00, we were in the room at 15:30! A few minutes later the hotel engineer arrived and checked the hot water to the bath and after running it for a period commented that because we were on the second floor it was a long way from the boiler. Hot water now on tap - just. The next problem was the plug for the bath would not fit, improvised a plug with a bar of soap. Had our bath at last. Called reception to request a new plug, a few minutes later the Duty Manger arrived to fix the plug problem. So to dinner. Only ones in the restaurant tonight. There was a limited menu. We chose our food and this was delivered quickly. The food was OK. My wife has a Gluten Allergen and this was dealt with very well. Day 2 Breakfast was very good. Day 2 evening meal was virtually the same as Day 1 but a slightly different sauce! Again just 3 couples in the restaurant. Day 3 Breakfast good. We decided to visit one of the local restaurants, Piccolo's, despite the fact that the evening meal was included in our package. Overall we enjoyed the stay, found the staff friendly and attentive. Good customer service. The hotel seems to be suffering from low bookings in the week and seem to have trimmed the costs to keep profitable. We will be back as the location and walking is great.

"Excellent Value for Money"

4
27/10/2017

Stayed one night on a Groupon deal, first time I have used Groupon for a hotel booking so I had my doubts but I was very impressed with the hotel and the breakfast which had an amazing array of items. Had a few problems with the room such as a missing curtain and lights that didn't work but the main problem was as I had said that I had limited mobility at present so they put us in room 108 which had been modified for wheelchair users unfortunately it was opposite the stairs and from 6am onwards there was a constant steam of guests from the second floor slamming the two sets of doors to the stairs outside of the room. That said, I thought that the hotel was certainly more than value for money for what we paid and the staff were unfailingly helpful.

"So bad we slept in the car"

1
24/10/2017

Absolute shambles. Room could not be slept in, or fixed, due to a broken bathroom unit making a noise all night long. Also couldn't use the toilet. Hotel then had the audacity to charge 50% for a room that we could not sleep in. Manager did not have the b***s to deal with this at check out, and instead took the money from my account without my approval, also known as theft. I wouldn't stay here again if they paid me. Also there was a wedding on that night and from what I heard there were complaints about that too - so if you were thinking about getting married here...don't. Manager couldn't run a bath never mind a hotel. Formal complaint now going to Best Western due to the appalling way we were treated. Also the hotel is like something from the 70's, the shower was barely a dribble. I honestly wouldn't let my dog stay here.

17/10/2017

Just returned back from a two night stay which was reasonable priced at Craiglands Hotel Linkley, First impression of hotel certainly has the Wow Factor with the fantastic scenery,.(Money cant buy) Quick and easy check in and even help with luggage to our room buy a gentleman called Khem who entertained us throughout our stay. Room was large modern with a view you could sit and steer at for hours and not want to leave your room. TV didn't go on once whiles we stayed in the hotel We decided to eat in the restaurant on our first evening food prices were cheap and drinks too. I ordered the steak advertised locally sourced you could tell it was local as it was cooked to perfection and the best meat I've ever tasted, complements to the chef and the waiting on staff as nothing was any trouble Good Night sleep a little cold but added to the feel of being out in the country, In the morning breakfast was quick and enjoyable. We decided to adventure out into the local town, The locals all seemed to have nothing but good things to say about Craigland Hotel as we met up with some in the hotel that evening as if it was there local. Thanks for the stay an will be back very soon. A real hidden gem Paul

"Wedding party"

2
16/10/2017

Average at best, i was matron of honour to the bride, i booked and paid for one room for 2 nights, they messed it up and booked me only in one night, although this was quickly rectified my husband and i ended up in what can only have been the old store cupboard, the room was tiny, wall paper loose, the bathroom was obviously added later to the room and badly at that, completely bodged in. The room was also no where near the bridal suite (not even on the same floor) which i specifically asked to be situated near to due to me being the matron of honour, all the other bridesmaids rooms (booked in at the same costs) were larger with robes and slippers and recently renovated, i think because the booking was messed up in the first place they just 'squeezed us in' not acceptable. The wedding itself was brilliant, the only let down was there was no cake handed out at the end, the bride was not happy that a £400 cake completely went to waste. Lastly, upon check in they asked for my card for pre authorisation on room service etc, i was assured that nothing would come out of my account unless id booked anything to the room within the stay. Ive now just noticed that £100 has come out of my account from the hotel, on top of the £13.00 room bill!! Fuming!!

We both loved the hotel, wonderful old building, but renovated sympathetically Our bedroom and bathroom were large. Comfy beds. Staff were helpful . Meals good value. Walking distance to the town and the moors with the Cow and Calf rocks. The only thing that could have improved our stay would have been slippers as bathroom floor a little cool

Nice country hotel with genuine little old ladies sipping high tea in the reception area. Breakfast was a great spread. The room was getting perhaps a little dated, I guess it depends what you pay and how many guests they have. Perhaps ask for a renovated rooms, I took what I was given.

"Ruined our wedding"

Would never recommend this hotel to anyone!! We had the bridal suite booked by our friends as a wedding gift for the night of our wedding. This had been booked well in advance and someone even called on the night to find out a rough time of arrival.upon arrival no one at reception around 15 mins someone turned up we ordered food bottle of processco and headed to our room to find someone in the bed telling us to get out!!! Went to reception furious and we got put in the smallest of rooms which was horrible granted the manager refunded etc but this shoul never happen when someone rang that night around 22.30 to see rough time of arrival discussing and very disappointing!!!

"LOVELY HOTEL IN RURAL ILKLEY"

03/10/2017

The Craiglands is situated just 'outside' Ilkley up on Ilkley Moor. Hotel was clean, comfortable, and staff lovely! Food and wines in restaurant were exceptional. Stayed here whilst attending family funeral. Travelled with 91 year old mother and they gave her 'an easy access' room (mostly for disabled people, which she is not) but the actual ease of everything in her room was gratefully received. The only 'downside' if you can call it that, was the hotel was not well-sign posted in Ilkley town itself. Quite hard to find if you don't know the area - but that's not the hotel's fault. Would defo stay again and would recommend to anyone considering Ilkley for walking hols etc.

Hotel was lovely for a wedding, food was just ok. Drinks prices were reasonable. Room was very basic and we had requested a king size bed as my husband is 6ft 3 but we only had a double. Bathroom was tiny, we could barely turn round. Ask for a new room.

"Not the best"

02/10/2017

I have just spent a night at the Craiglands Hotel in Ilkley. You would expect a decent standard of hotel in this picturesque location, however the Craiglands is not that, it's average at best. I was told before going to ask for an updated room, on arrival I did this, but none were available, I will come back to the room in a moment. The hotel itself is old, I went to use the lift to go to the room, I would not recommend this to anyone of a nervous disposition, it barely moves, the doors take an age. The staircases are dangerous, very steep in places, with glass doors at the bottom of them, any stumble and a nasty accident awaits. The room (250) was tiny, with what was supposed to be a double bed in it, which in fact was more like a single. I'm over 6 ft and found my legs could stick proudly out of the bed end and my head had the challenge of going against the built in wardrobe. There is a safe in the room , tea and coffee, iron, however no fridge or water. The bathroom was fine, actually been a similar size to the bedroom. The bar, not very good, poor choice of beers that in fact tasted sour, the staff were fine though, prices are what I would expect at around £5 a pint. Breakfast, was basic, done in a buffet style, so you could get as much a you like, however I found the products used were not very tasty, and when I was getting mine there was very little out. Overall I wouldn't recommend this hotel to anyone going to Ilkley and would advise you to find somewhere else, which is a pity as the location is fantastic

01/10/2017

We were at the wedding of our friends and stayed overnight. Our room was huge, spotlessly clean with a newly renovated bathroom, and whilst we could hear quite a bit of the party going on downstairs we had a really good night sleep. However .... whilst we had a fabulous time at the wedding party we feel that we had to put a comment on here regarding some issues the hotel needs to put right if they want the place to measure up to its grand exterior.... Firstly- please fix the decking on the terrace/balcony- it's rotten to the core and dangerous- several women went through the wood with their heels! Secondly- please train your staff! At times it was just plain embarrassing! •Don't just take plates away- people were still eating - ask if you are unsure. • When I asked for a knife as a cheese board had been put out with no cutlery whatsoever the waiter with long, unkempt and very greasy hair returned with a fistful of knives that he held out to me - when I didn't take them off him he just plonked them on the table and left. • a gin and slimline tonic is not the same as one with elderflower tonic- no matter how much you insist in it. • breakfast- what a disappointment! Who wants to sit in a dingy dark room with no light in the morning?! Coffee is not freshly brewed but comes out of a flask, choice is very limited, really not good. And again- please don't clear plates when people are still eating!!! PS: we had asked if breakfast was always served in the ballroom and were told 'yes' the housekeeping supervisor - turns out this was not true- according to the lady at the reception it normally is served in another room with lovely windows! Why on Earth lie about that?!? Resume: probably good for a biggish conference , definitely nowhere near a nice special occasion weekend! Would we go again? To Ilkley definitely yes, to the Craigland - probably not.

Me and hubby stayed sat and Sunday, 23rd -25th September. We had a voucher bought for us via buy a gift so used that, unsure what our bed and breakfast deal would have cost. Hotel- beautiful building, lovely communal areas. I understand was once 5* very well regarded and fell onto hard times, but it's definiteky going back up. Easily a 3 nearly 4*. Fantastic welcome by reception Saturday afternoon, lovely breakfast and staff with sun and Monday. Staff very attentive to any queries. Work to exterior areas did not impact on us and will definitely enhance the hotel. Our room was very clean but the bed was small, though we both slept well. All the necessary things as you expect. Tea and coffee facilities were in the wardrobe so a pain to use, so we didn't! Ilkley is lovely, we will definitely return. Great work guys x

The hotel was very good, the room was comfortable and very clean. The breakfast was excellent with all the staff being polite and helpful. The only down side was the price of drinks in the bar, very expensive i.e £12 for a double scotch. l didn't want to buy half the bottle only have a double measure.

We booked this hotel as we were attending a wedding nearby. The room was recently decorated but lacked quality finishing touches. Breakfast was too expensive so we didn't book it, then frustratingly got offers for free breakfast if we booked. Bed and pillows were not comfortable. Bathroom was large but space was wasted, proper double bath and separate shower would have been better with larger top. Would possibly stay again. Car parking was difficult hopefully due to building works

Great hotel in a very nice area of Ilkley. On arriving we were greeted by very friendly staff on reception, room nice with a large tv on the wall. the wardrobes could do with upgrading, lovely bathroom with shower, both rooms spotless. On arriving the next morning for breakfast we were greeted by a young lady very polite, the only thing i can complain of is the cooked breakfast both mornings we had a full English breakfast the bacon was like shoe leather and the tomatoes wasn't very nice i think they had been made for ages. There was plenty selection of cerial, yoghurts, nuts fruit etc, which were all presented nicely, think they need a new chef to be honest.

"Heating in rooms did not work including towel rail in the bathroom"

14/09/2017

Very well decorated, but unfortunately the age of this beautiful building has taken it's toll and the heating in our room was non-existant despite being told it would come on in the evening. Bed very comfortable.. Restaurant limited menu but was freshly cooked and ample portions. The bar manager when serving coffee for 3 initially bought enough for 1 and when he laid the cups out picked them up with his thumb inside the cup. Very well presented and friendly staff and with a bit of updating of the heating and plumbing and training in presentation of drinks it would have been a different experience.

Welcome wasn't great, arrived hungry when it states times there would be room service and there wasn't that's rather poor. Bedroom is excellent, quite old fashioned but I loved it, very clean and compact exactly what I required Breakfast was disappointing arrived at 07.45 Told to sit where I liked not brought to my table just a point in the direction, continental was hardly continental when it contained some yoghurts, a croissant and a choice of two cereals...... the cooked breakfast was awfully poor..... for £12.50 I expected an awful lot more the portion size was extremely small and produce (apart from local sausages) was very cheap..... If booking I would book the rooms and exclude breakfast, nip to town..... The general hotel environment is excellent It's £4 in a taxi from the station definitely worth the taxi ride rather than the walk as it's a bit of a rabbit warren to find..... Hopefully the evening meal will be more superior

We booked the Craiglands for our daughter's wedding this weekend. We had a fantastic time at both the day reception and evening do. Food was lovely and was served in an efficient and timely manner. The evening buffet was very tasty too. Staff were friendly. We booked rooms for the evening and these were perfectly adequate and the beds were comfortable. Breakfast was good and there was enough choice for us. Thank you very much.

Excellent afternoon tea, if I was to be really picky I would say that the scone only came with ordinary cream and not clotted cream. The setting is beautiful as is the hotel itself. a The staff were very attentive and friendly.

We have just come back from a wedding held here. The photos of hotel tell one story but the reality is quite different. We could see there has been attempts at decorating but it is still very tired. The room we were given although adequate was small. It was over the dining room and the noise travelled. The bathroom was quite big BUT--- The toilet when flushed sounded as though we had a motorbike in the room. When having a shower the water did not go down the plug hole so we paddled up to our ankles. We had booked our stay back in January. We had got wedding guest rate. This you may say ok. So we all paid the same price but we all had different standard rooms . The wedding breakfast we enjoyed and the night time party. The suite was a perfect room for both. The food was lovely. The breakfast in the morning did not offer much choice. The staff were very attentive during the wedding breakfast. The service was very smooth. Ilkley we would visit again .The hotel is in a great location for visiting Ilkley and the surrounding area. Over all the hotel is just very tired and needs a good overhaul. What has got to us is that we paid the same price as every one else we got basic were as others got superior rooms .

The Craiglands was the reception venue for our son's wedding. All the staff seemed to go out of their way to ensure that everyone had a first class experience. Even relatively complicated dietary requirements were catered for with a minimum of fuss. The food was excellent, well presented and hot. All we wanted to see was our son and daughter in law have the best day of their lives and the contribution made by the hotel cannot be underestimated. Our room was well furnished and equipped and a comfortable nights stay. Top marks all round

"Weekend Stay"

03/09/2017

The hotel is very impressive from the outside and still retains is charm, there were 2 weddings on over the weekend bit we still were able to park without issue. The staff were all great especially the lady running the restaurant, unfortunately I can recall her name but she was very good with our little one. The rooms are of good size for 2 adults and a child on a short stay. The camp bed was a little uncomfortable for our son but at his age he isn't fussy. The master bed was massive and very comfy. The bathroom had seen better days but I understand from previous reviews that renovation may be underway. The room we had was above the hall used by the weddings evening entertainment so was a little on the noise side however to their credit we were advised of this at the time of booking so can't complain. The setting of the hotel is great, there's a short walk to the moors behind the hotel with a small lake to feed ducks. It's around 10 to 15 mins walk into town but it is uphill on the way back however the incline isn't too steep so is manageable. Would stay here again.

"Beautiful hotel and welcoming staff"

01/09/2017

My husband and I stayed at the Craiglands for 4 nights as part of a coach trip. We were a party of 50. Our bedroom was lovely and the twin beds extremely comfortable. We were staying on a half board basis. Breakfast was a help yourself buffet with a good choice of breakfast items. At breakfast we had to select our choice of evening meal from a specially prepared menu - the food in the evening was of an excellent standard and was always piping hot. We found the staff at the Craiglands extremely helpful and although many were young, I would like to particularly mention Joe and Cameron who served us for the evening meal - they were always extremely cheerful and accommodating. We would definitely like to return to Craiglands and hope that we receive the same excellent service.

"Has a feeling of neglect about this hotel."

30/08/2017

We stayed here in August 2017 for a week. We booked a family room which was not big enough for a weeks stay, with just one small window and no floor space..however the staff on reception were very good and we moved to a room at the front with plenty of space. The whole place has a feeling of real neglect about it , which is a shame as it could be fantastic! . The building itself needs a major re-vamp, which I understand is going on at the moment, tho whilst we were there there was no work carried out. The outside needs some attention, lots of cigarette butts by the front entrance and litter around. The Wi-Fi was very slow. We had breakfast included but found this to be very unsatisfactory as the staff would not re-lay any of the tables after the guests had left so when we got there for breakfast they had to start laying the table for us and we were treated like a bit of a nuisance! We did order fried eggs one morning and they arrived looking like they had been thrown onto the plate from a very long distance, obviously the chef was in a bad mood that morning! We always arrived with at least an hour to go before breakfast finished so this is very bad management! Infact we never saw a Catering Manager the whole time we were there! I think the fact that the staff are very young and not managed at all well, as with the breakfast this should simply not happen! I would however go there again and when we did complain the staff were always very nice and sorted out our complaints.

29/08/2017

The hotel is in a good location, not far from the town centre. The hotel holds a lot of functions and therefore the noise can be heard until late at night. However, staff were very friendly, welcoming and warm. Comfortable bed. Excellent location for walking.

"Friendly and functional "

25/08/2017

We had a couple of nights here and enjoyed the stay. There are some hits and misses. Firstly it's an old building and you should be flexible in your outlook .. don't expect all mod-cons and modern styling. The hot water needs a minute to run through for the shower but is fine and the loos are Saniflow so noisy. The beds are super comfy and the large screen TVs are a welcome addition. Internet works well most of the time. It's a busy hotel for functions at weekends so was glad to have gone for a quieter midweek break. For the walkers it's perfect for going up the Moor as steps lead from the hotel grounds. It's steep and definitely needs sure footing in parts . What makes this hotel are the staff.. attentive and welcoming reception, we met the chef who was very knowledgeable and produced excellent meals. The star of the show is undoubtably Nash who has years in the business (new to this hotel) and whose friendly, professional nature smooths the niggly issues that can arise. (I mean, how can any hotel run out of mayo ?!). The interplay between him and chef was very amusing and, at the end of the day, made sure we left happy so thank you. So, a mixed bag.. but if you roll with it, just 'chill', you should have a good time. We did.

Stayed here for one night and also had some food in the bar - everything you could need was on hand (always nice not to have to ring reception for an iron for example!), and the staff were all friendly. The interior is all well-maintained and clean, though it's a shame more hasn't been made of the hotel's Victorian history - the bar area was a bit over-modernised and looked like any other hotel bar, which seemed a shame.

We spent two nights here recently and had a really well appointed and spotless room, which had a lovely view over the hills. The staff were all very friendly and food in the restaurant was good. "Comfortable Hotel"

17/08/2017

This hotel is about halfway up the road towards Ilkley Moor which is a reasonable hill - it is a Best Western and is comfortable with refurbished rooms which although are not large are well appointed. Built in the 1850's it is a magnificent example of a Victorian hotel. The hotel has a number of function rooms to the side and rear varying in sizes some of which look better than others, some of the public areas near the function rooms looked a little careworn. The staff were in general really friendly and helpful - the first morning we had table service for the breakfast which was good, the second was a buffet service in the larger room which was not so well organised unfortunately. The larger room that was used for the breakfast buffet is clearly one of the original function rooms of the hotel but there was complete silence - the atmosphere of breakfast would benefit from some background music - even a small CD player / speakers could be brought in at a low cost - it would just improve the feeling of things. We arrived downstairs at 9am and there was already no bowls on the buffet, empty cereal packets on the buffet table (no bin to throw them in - surely an easy fix?) and most of the fruit and pastries had gone as well as bacon nearly run out and not replenished. Having said that there were several staff members around and when asked to get more fruit etc they did, but if they were monitoring the buffet fully surely they would have just topped this up without people making a point of having to ask? The duty / breakfast manager (Naz?) was really friendly though and tried to help people as much as possible and seemed to be trying his best although the two other young lads working with him seemed to lack skills. The day we arrived there was several functions on and lots of people out on the front terrace and lawn - they had moved chairs and left a lot of rubbish (cigarette packets etc) on the terrace near the entrance door. Sadly it took two days for this litter to be cleared away which is poor considering it was right next to the main entrance door and looked unsightly. I would have thought this would have been a priority on any cleaning rota. Having said that the rest of the hotel was clean and well presented. With some attention to detail on the regular clearing / tidying of the terrace area plus breakfast buffet presentation / service this could be a good hotel - it is a really nice and characterful building that has a lot of potential. I would certainly return here as it is good value and well located plus the staff especially the breakfast / duty manager is really friendly and helpful.

13/08/2017

Stayed for two nights. Really great location for Ilkley and Skipton. Staff were really friendly. The male bar tender is a credit to the hotel (didn't catch his name). He ran the restaurant and the bar alone most of the time and was always happy to chat and make all guests feel welcome. The room was lovely but the floor boards are a bit creeky but that comes with old hotels. The food was ok but a bit of a let down when I realised they use frozen chips and was expecting freshly cut and cooked chips (we want to Bizzy Lizzies chippy in Skipton the next night for tea FAB). All in all I would definately recommend the hotel and will stay again

07/08/2017

Stayed here for three nights as a base for walking part of the Dales Way. This hotel ( which is up a very steep hill and not straightforward to find) has more than a touch of " past it's best faded glory" style. The staff are really helpful and friendly, albeit a couple having a touch of the " fawlty towers / haven't yet been trained " approach ( be careful who you ask to operate the coffee machine!) that said, they do to a person go out of their way to help . Rooms are clean and tidy and my room had an excellent bathroom, great shower and good bed. Internet is a bit hit and miss. Highlight is the food- this hotel obviously has a really good chef- whilst the menu has a limited choice this is obviously for a good reason because all the meals I had - including breakfast and three dinners- were great . Big downside to this hotel is it's use as a wedding venue- be prepared to negotiate your way through the wedding crowds and to put up with load music and activity if your stay coincides with a wedding booking ( we had 3 weddings on the 3 successive days we stayed)

06/08/2017

Looks good but truly awful, arrived as part of a wedding party, although receptionist was extremely pleasant she couldn't work out which room was which. The bar staff were completely untrained, not his fault but before front of house staff are left on their own they need training. Friday morning breakfast was a complete farse which culminated in a cold cook breakfast with a fried egg which was more like a memory pillow in texture than an egg. Although the rooms were clean, what looked like a brand new bathroom had a leaking radiator and I had to fix the shower screen to stop it from leaking over the side of the bath. The wifi did not cover the whole of the hotel, we had periodic signal but the room next door had none. The surrounding gardens although nice had damage to the low walls, so dangerous to young guests. The welcoming red carpet was a complete trip hazard as it wasn't held down and I witnessed two people tripping over it. Basil Fawlty would have been perfectly at home in this once wonderful surrounding hotel but it has now obviously lost it's way. I'm only grateful that our experience didn't detract from the wedding itself.

"Somewhat disappointed"

01/08/2017

We stayed one night at The Craiglands Hotel during a touring holiday of Yorkshire. First impression from the outside was elegant and attractive, plus we received a friendly welcome from reception. Our room was small and unexceptional but the bathroom was very nice. In general, the hotel lacked atmosphere and we were not tempted to want to eat in the restaurant in the evening (we went to The Cow and Calf up the road). At breakfast, we found the service to be slow and disorganised and the staff did not impress. Our breakfast was reasonable but it could have been hotter and it lacked flavour. We asked for tea (for two) and a pot arrived with one teabag inside. All in all, I feel that £99 for the night was definitely overpriced.

"Yorkshire pudding run 2017"

31/07/2017

Time for our yearly Yorkshire Pudding MG and Classic car run. The graiglands has for some years been our base to set this run off. About 200 entrants this year for the run. So Charles, Martin, Gilly and Rita, there was a lot of organising to be done. Which they did marvellously. The hotel accommodated us and looked after us very well. Providing tea/ coffee and bacon sandwiches prior to the cars setting off. Then at the end of the run a roast beef dinner, with chocolate sponge and custard was provided by the hotel. The meal I found was lovely, the service was excellent and 200 people where served like clockwork. Everyone mucked in and performed their allocated jobs extremely well. The after dinner entertainment was the new grumbleweeds, and boy where they good. My partner( Malcom), has never laughed like that for ages. Everyone on our dining table thought they were brilliant. As this run is for charity robin gave his services for free, a fantastic gesture. They are worth going to see. Now for a little grumble? The night before, Saturday evening we had a bar meal which is one of worst meals I've had. It was supposed to be served hot and, unfortunately it was cold. So it was returned to the kitchen. My fellow dinner also was served a cold meal and was returned also!! When we got them back they were hot but totally inedible. Two of other fellow diners had the fish and the hotel had No Tartar sauce?? Never in my life have I known a well known establishment not have tartar sauce to go with a meal?? Come on graiglands get your act together!! All your customers are entitled to decent food are they not??if you catered for 200??, why could you not do it for 6?? Everything else was ok. You need to get the bar meals sorted??

Outwardly a nice hotel. Inside we met the rudest manager ever. Each time we encountered him he was being rude to someone. Treated his staff badly, shouting at them in front of customers and generally ruined the atmosphere of the place. Ignored it the first time around, having gone back again it's clear that things haven't changed. Never again.

Lovely stay here! The hotel has had a refurb since the last time I stayed and its now beautiful. The rooms are spacious, clean and modern and staff are brilliant!! They couldn't do enough for us. The breakfast in the morning is well worth getting, I highly recommend. Definitely will be returning.

"Not a good experience"

Booked afternoon tea as a birthday treat for my husband. We arrived in reception not sure where to go. Three members of staff were leaning on the reception desk chatting and laughing with each other and totally ignored us. We eventually found our way into the bar and were seated in a corner within full earshot of a group of management and staff arguing with two disgruntled customers which was very uncomfortable. The food itself was OK and the member of staff who served us was extremely courteous and efficient. Not a good experience.

Booked this hotel for my son and paid in advance. On arrival he and his girlfriend were treated like 2nd class citizens and a £150 pre authorisation demanded on his bank card even though the room was paid for. They were then given a poor room at the back of the hotel facing the fire escape - in the morning there was no hot water. They were told that the pre authorised amount would only be returned after a few days - until I visited the hotel myself to sort it out. Absolutely hopeless, unfriendly and not worth a quarter of the prices charged. Outdated decor and attitude - shabby all round

Have stayed here twice before and no problems. How different the third time round. The room was tiny with no bed side table to the right and the ward robe butted right up to the bed so that when you turned in the bed you banged your arm. The shade on the bed side light was held in place soley by the light bulb. The kettle had to be held down at the back to create a connection with the base (we complained and this was replaced the following day). The menu for the evening meal was sausages, pollock or very tough pork. We didn't think it was worth having a bottle of wine with such a meagre meal. Went down to break-fast the following morning to be greeted with absolute chaos. The'd had a coach party in and there was nowhere to sit and dirty plates everywhere. We complained to the restaurant manager who apologised and said that everyone had got in late!! Lipstick on fruit glass, ran out of white bread, no cereal bowls and the list goes on. We mentioned to the evening receptionist that we were not very happy with the overall experience and she said 'yes, we've let you down, haven't we? I'll mention it to the General Manager'. On checking out the following morning, it was the same girl. I asked if the GM had said anything, she said 'not really' and that she would get him to e-mail us. Not heard from him yet. I do not expect a generic message from him at the end of this review.

My partner and I recently stayed at Craigland Hotel and were very happy with the service, stay and price. The room was very clean, offered tea/coffee facilities and complimentary biscuits. Smart TV in room was fantastic! Lovely area and around 5 minutes walk into the town centre. Would definitely recommend.

"Weekend in Ilkley"

18/07/2017

We spent 2 nights at the Craiglands, a Friday and Saturday. The reception staff were very welcoming and helpful. The room wasn't the biggest we've stayed in but was adequate for a 2 night stay with a comfortable bed tea making facilities and good selection of toiletries replenished each day. We had a large wall-mounted TV and good Wi-Fi reception. Breakfast on the Saturday morning was served by 2 young men who did not appear to have much idea of what to do. We were greeted at the door and asked for our room number by one member of staff and then keft standing there while he went to find the more senior member of staff to show us to a table in the almost empty dining room. We were served with our breakfast and a pot of coffee, which was all excellent but as we were finishing our breakfast one of the same 2 members of staff came over and asked if we wanted to order any hot food -!!?? The next morning (Sunday), was buffet service, again the food was excellent but unfortunately the coffee was very unpalatable. Instead of being served with individual pots of coffee as the previous morning the coffee was in large thermos jugs for people to serve themselves and had, presumably been left standing for too long and become very strong. Apart from this, we had a great stay.

"Afternoon tea with top service "

We booked afternoon tea as part of my mum's 70th birthday celebrations. The afternoon tea was excellent and was made even better by the service provided by the very accommodating member of staff who after entering into friendly conversation happened to mention had only been working for Craiglands for 2 week's. Cracking food with exceptional service. Thank you to the member of staff who truly enhanced the experience.

i really liked this hotel when we visited back in May. Bed was the comfiest bed i have slept in (bar my own of course :) The food was lovely and couldn't fault it. Would definatly reccommed staying here for a few days as you can go down into Ilkley or travel to Skipton. Bathroom was massive and i think the room could be extended a bit more and downsize on the bath room. Overall a lovely hotel and would go back there again.

This seems to be the only hotel of any size in Ilkley - so the only choice for late booking. Despite asking for a room reachable without stairs when booking - and being assured of that - our room was only reachable by lift & two sets of stairs. In the event I managed, but it was disappointing service and it could have been disastrous for someone totally unable to cope with stairs. Additionally the plumbing made "interesting" noises whenever the bathroom was used. The bathroom was small but the shower was a decent size. All in all ok but nothing to write home about. And the room location was a serious service lapse.

"Ok for the price "

09/07/2017

I tend to agree with other reviews that Craiglands is in need of some tlc and updating. We had an exec king room for £129 plus £10 each for breakfast. The room was spacious but ceiling paper coming off and fittings more b&b than hotel. That said, this was not expensive and I would say not hugely overpriced for what we got. Cleanliness was fine, staff friendly and breakfast was good - piping hot in contrast to some other reviews. Probably 3.5/5

09/07/2017

We visited the hotel for our wedding anniversary and in all honesty, I was very disappointed with it. As a treat my husband had paid for an upgraded room which I felt was only up to the specification of a standard room. The hospitality tray was meagre with one pack of uninspired biscuits to share. The room was adequate but again was tired, the walls were scuffed and needed to be painted. The desk was chipped and worn. The 'upgraded' toiletries were miniscule. On a positive note, the bathrobes provided were soft, thick and fluffy. The bed was absolutely fabulous and we had a superb night's sleep. The menu for the evening meal was dull although I enjoyed a beautiful starter of feta cheese, salad leaves and sun dried tomatoes. My husband found mouthfuls of bones in his fish goujons and there was no meringue in his 'Ilkley Moor mess'. The breakfast wasn't what I was expecting - a help yourself buffet which included watery scrambled eggs, coffee/tea in flasks and croissants in individual plastic wrappers. It reminded me of a motorway service type breakfast not what I was expecting in a hotel. The gentleman at check-in was lovely, warm and welcoming however the waiter during our evening meal was obviously not enjoying his job or was having a bad day. The morning staff and lady who checked us out were also very unwelcoming and uniterested in their guests. I'm not sure I would rush to return although Ilkley is a stunning place and we will definitely return to the brilliant bars (HIGHLY RECOMMENDED THE BLACK HAT in Ilkley!!) . Although parts of the hotel are lovely, it has no cohesion and is a complete mishmash of style & design. Definitely needs a huge cash injection to bring it up to scratch and hospitality training for some of it's staff.

"Woeful Experience!"

I really don't want see a cut and pasted response from the Manager of this place as that in itself tells you all you need to know. Doors left open after room was cleaned, no bar staff, no air con or reliable internet connection and serving staff at breakfast who didn't know what 'sweetners' were. I could go on. Just give it a miss.

Stayed here as places in Ilkley that are pet friendly are few and far between. Paid £150/night (£20 dog charge) for a Saturday night. Location is on the outskirts of the centre but within walking distance of the centre and easy access the moor via a path that runs behind the hotel, no complaints there. There have been several attempts to modernise the interior of the hotel from what I can make out, but the result is in-cohesive as one moment you are in the decoration of the current times then you move into another room and you are back into a room that feels like a Victorian funeral parlour. The room we stayed in was drab and the bathroom was similar to that found in hospitals in the 1980's. This hotel could be really nice if, the glass Conference room was knocked down, the green entrance canopy was replaced with a classy glass one and the decor spruced up throughout, hence requiring significant investment.

We had a lovely room on the first floor and a super meal the night we got there. Shortbread cookies at reception 24 hours a day, delicious. The staff were very helpful and informative about the local area. Although there was construction work going on in the carpark you could see the gardens were beautiful and well cared for which added to the appearance of this fine old building. Overall we thoroughly enjoyed our stay.

"Unbelievably noisy"

16/06/2017

In May this year my wife stayed at Craiglands on a Saturday night whilst travelling in the north of England. All was well until early evening when she became aware of drums being played very loudly. After enquiring at Reception she was told that there was a Bolywood Gala being held that evening and that it would be very noisy. She was advised to try and get some sleep while the guests were having their meal and before the main event started. Not very good advice as this was at 7pm. As the evening progressed the noise became so bad that when my wife went to speak to the receptionist, the woman couldn't hear her even though they were on either side of the desk. There were several people also complaining about the noise and eventually the receptionist just went and shut herself in her room. She was later seen leaving the hotel. I have written a formal complaint to both the General Manager and Best Western requesting a refund of the room rate as the stay was a disaster. The manager offered a 50% reduction on a future stay, which considering we would never go back there was worthless. Best Western also confirmed that they would not refund the room rate as it was the manager's decision. The situation now is that I am about to commence legal proceedings against the hotel. This is something I have never done before, but my wife's experience in staying at Craiglands was so bad I feel I have to do this as a matter of principal.

We've stayed here previously and were so happy with our visit that my husband decided to book another stay here as a birthday treat for me, however our second, most recent stay was disappointing. The hotel's location is perfect and the room was spacious but had absolutely no phone signal or Internet access. We visited reception twice to try and sort this, explaining that we had left our children with baby sitters and it was important that we were contactable but it made no difference, the reception staff could offer no solution or help. When we checked out we were disappointed not to be asked how our stay was as we would have appreciated the opportunity to give feedback. I understand that the hotel is undergoing physical changes and upgrades and the building works at the front of the building made no difference to our stay, but I was disappointed that customer service service has deteriorated to such an extent.

Bit disappointed really, did one night here. A small room , facilities poor, no table to the right and I couldn't pick up the internet. Usually you get details of the hotel in your room, none here apart from a menu. So, not sure what internet I was to link to, but the two sevices offered didn't pick up the password that came with the keycard. Couldn't be bothered to go down to reception again, as previously the keycard was faulty on arrival. Staff were friendly though. Not sure if its just been taken over by Best Western as they seemed a bit in transition at breakfast - not really knowing what to do. We were served after someone who had come in later than us, and we had to ask to be served. The location is great and Ilkley looks to be very good and one evening wasn't enough to explore, although managed a couple of nice pubs in the centre. Been here before where we had a much better room, its a shame as I would have gone back, but if I do - will look elsewhere in the area.

"Lovely Hotel and staff , poor bar service and food !"

25/05/2017

We stayed here as a wedding gift from guests , I emailed the manager and asked for a nice room after reading some reviews , the room was lovely and clean , spacious, very comfortable bed , everything you needed . Very dog friendly to . We decided to spent the evening there and eat in the bar as dogs were allowed , the lad on the bar was lovely and friendly, new i think , he was then moved to another bar and it all went downhill from there! N bar staff . people waiting to be served , giving up and leaving ! We had ordered food , I had the " beer battered fish , it came out as a flat burnt offering like a fish out of box of 6 from aldi! My hubby ordered a side of onion rings , they werent any so offered an alternative , garlic bread, the 2 smallest slices ever for £2.75! A manager appeared to run the bar and the brasserie both at the same time , needless to say they lost alot of custom as people got sick of waiting ,we had waited over 20 mins for a drink so we to left! It spoilt what was an otherwise lovely stay !

"Incompetent reception staff spoilt our stay"

3
23/05/2017

We booked some months ago on a room only basis direct with the hotel. Closer to the date we noticed an advertisement offering a Bed and Breakfast rate which was cheaper than our room only rate. We telephoned and asked them to match the deal. The gentleman agreed and said that he would put a note on the system. On arrival there was no note on the system. We explained the situation and showed a lady our paperwork (luckily I had taken and printed out screenshots of the deal they had matched). She amended the rate and assured us that breakfast would now be included also. The next morning at breakfast as we entered the dining room, we were welcomed with a request for our room number and the information that we would have to pay for breakfast as our rate was room only. My husband went back to reception and spoke to another member of staff whose reaction was "just let them have the free breakfast". This made my husband look and feel like a trouble-maker. It was not a "free" breakfast. Our booking was on a Bed and Breakfast basis. What a shame to have to go through the same rather embarrassing and upsetting scene twice! Incidentally, the breakfast was dreadful - self-service from an unappetising display of poor quality food that had been kept warm for far too long - black pudding hard like pieces of tarmac, cheap sausages, dried out fishy bacon and scrambled eggs (the only eggs available) which looked so revolting I didn't even try them. The toaster was incomprehensible. The hotel itself was cleaner than I expected and our room was immaculate. However, when we booked, we had requested a quiet room. Ours was on the first floor directly above the main entrance (and there was a function on) and opposite the lift and stairs so that everyone who entered or left the building did so under our window and everyone else with a room on our floor had to walk past our room to get to theirs. In addition we were overlooking a building site and could hear and feel the people in the room above walking around. It was a real shame that what could have been a lovely stay was spoilt by the incompetent service. The last thing you want is to have to have a confrontation over a booking, let alone do it twice. And really - in whose eyes was that ever going to be a quiet room? I was expecting better.

Came here on a business trip, the building is an old building, but having extensive refurb.... inside the hotel it is nicely decorated and my room was lovely. Very smart bathroom and loads of room in the bedroom itself with free wifi and usual TV etc...The staff here were very helpful, def recommend the breakfast too... superb... The meeting rooms are tastefully decorated and the bar area too...most enjoyable. There is some building work to the front where a new large car park is being constructed, but this doesn't get in the way of the hotel itself. I would come back here to stay if I was in the area.... Thankyou all the staff....

18/05/2017

I stayed at Craiglands for a Conference, and the staff obviously worked really hard to accommodate the group and their particular needs. This is a traditional building from when Ilkley was a spa town. The little footpath through to the lake behind the hotel was a lovely surprise. The hotel is undergoing car-park work at the moment, so parking was a bit cosy on the Friday night when there was a party on at the hotel as well. I was a little disappointed in the food at the gala dinner, but the selection of food at the breakfasts & the lunchtime buffets was good.
