"Very pleasant hotel"

09/10/2018

The George is very convenient for the City centre being a 10 minute walk. It has comfortable, well maintained rooms. The staff were all very pleasant and helpful. The breakfast is excellent with a good choice and has waitress service for cooked items. Parking is good too. All in all it was just right.

Thank you very much for taking the time to write us an excellent review. We are delighted you enjoyed all aspects of the hotel and hope we can welcome you back in the future.

"Excellent hotel on the edge of Norwich city centre."

07/10/2018

A very nice hotel tucked away from the main road leading into Norwich City centre. Although all the staff were very friendly and polite, Alister stood out as being so professional and enthusiastic in his approach to working at The George, and was keen to express his enjoyment in working for the management/owners of the hotel. The hotel is clean and well decorated throughout. The choice of food from the menu in the restaurant was excellent, and not overly expensive for hotel dining. Some rooms did experience the loss of WiFi over the weekend, but was being addressed the the hotel staff. Should we visit Norwich again, the Best Western George Hotel is a place we aim to stay at again.

186342Jules, General Manager at Best Western George Hotel, responded to this review
Thank you very much for your excellent review. We are really pleased you enjoyed your stay and we will of course ensure Alistair is aware of your special mention. We look forward to welcoming you back when you are next in the area.

"Peeling walls and no parking"

2
04/10/2018

Hotel looks fine and staff are friendly. Room 14 was tiny and had paint peeling off the walls. Also had lack of parking even though I rang and checked before I booked so I had to park in a residents only area up the road as directed by the staff. This meant I had to be out before 8am to move car.

186342Jules, General Manager at Best Western George Hotel, responded to this review
My sincere apologies you were unhappy with your room and found car parking at the hotel difficult. We do have 43 carpark spaces available but unfortunately cannot reserve spaces unless it is for a guest who specifically request assistance. I can confirm the peeling paint in that room has now been rectified and i do agree that room 14 is a small single room, but this is reflected in the price, we do have many other larger rooms available which again are priced accordingly. We do hope you will stay with us again and have a more positive experience in a room more suitable to your preferences.

The whole hotel has had a refurb and it looks amazing. From the moment you walk through the door of the hotel it has the wow factor. Our room was lovely. A lovely big bath and bed. The breakfast was the best breakfast I have had in a hotel for a long time and the staff in reception and in the restaurant were very friendly and helpful. 5 stars all round. Would definitely recommend to anyone who wants to stay within walking distance of the town centre.

This hotel staff were so welcoming , the hotel was warm and friendly and the food, well our compliments to the chef. My only criticism is our stay went too fast and we had to come home. Our room was very comfortable, ( 25 ) and quite spacious. A special thanks to Head of housekeeping for my special tea bags !! Once again, many thanks. Tim & Jean.

186342Jules, General Manager at Best Western George Hotel, responded to this review

"Great hotel "

06/09/2018

Stayed for one night on business. Room was small but perfect size for one person for one night. Restaurant area casual and homely, felt much more comfortable eating on own then in larger hotel. Gluten free menu which is great. Parking available and 5 minute walk into Norwich. Noises in corridor only complaint. But this was minor as a small hotel wasn't too many people going up and down corridor

186342Jules, General Manager at Best Western George Hotel, responded to this review
Thank you for your very positive review, your feedback is much appreciated. We hope we can welcome you back again soon.

"A little gem...."

What a lovely atmosphere this nice little hotel has! from an informal family meal to a formal dinner treat this place along with it's very friendly staff will tick all the boxes. After a few visits to this wonderful place we changed our already made plans and moved our wedding reception to this venue and we are so glad we did! There was not one of our 30+ guests that came that didn't compliment us on our choice of venue and all aspects of the day which we were helped by the Georges brilliant team of staff. If your in Norwich and want a nice quite getaway just 5 mins by taxi from the hustle and bustle of the city centre then this is the best place to go in our opinion....

186342Jules, General Manager at Best Western George Hotel, responded to this review
Thank you so very much for such a wonderful review. We were delighted and honoured to hold your wedding reception at The George. You are both just an amazing couple. Tanya you looked beautiful and Paul, you didn't look half bad either ;0) Have a great honeymoon and we look forward to seeing you again soon.

"Good value and friendly Hotel"

29/08/2018

A group of us from around the country stayed at this hotel recently. From start to finish the service was friendly, professional and enthusiastic. We couldn't fault the staff in any way- especially the young man who was on the desk when we arrived, was later behind the bar and in the restaurant in the morning- sadly we forgot to get his name, but he was incredibly cheerful and helpful. The hotel is handy for the city and the rooms were comfortable modern and clean.

186342Jules, General Manager at Best Western George Hotel, responded to this review

Staff on reception friendly and helpful. Nice size room, very comfortable and clean. Hotel has on site car park which is very handy. The staff were happy for us to leaving the car in the hotel carpark after we had checked out as we wanted to spend a few hours in the city. We have stayed at this hotel a number of times and are always pleased with the accommodation and facilities.

Really pleased with our choice for a Saturday night stop over in Norwich. We thought we might need taxis into the centre but actually the walk wasn't far at all. The hotel is stylishly decorated, bedrooms fairly small but comfortable and the breakfast delicious.

"Business trip to a very good hotel"

23/08/2018

Midweek stay in a lovely hotel on the outskirts of Norwich. Staff were excellent - friendly, professional and efficient. Plenty parking and easy to find. Route to the room was a little convoluted, but it's an old building on lots of levels (literally). My room was light and airy with a double (king size?) and a single bed, a desk, a TV and tea and coffee facilities. Nice big bathroom but no fridge in the room. Ice in the sink for the beer then.... Really strong air con. To the restaurant / bistro / bar. it does all three. And breakfast in the morning. Great staff. Very professional. Thanks guys - you got it just right. Dinner was lovely. I just had an omelette and some chips (great chips) and it came with a really good salad. Breakfast was great as well. I think the hotel GM has a great approach - she seems to support the team and be a role model. I saw you at breakfast making sure everything was just right! Well worth it if you're in the area

186342Jules, General Manager at Best Western George Hotel, responded to this review
Hi Brian, Thank you very much for your great review. We really do appreciate your kind comments and hope you will visit us again when you are next back in the area.

"2.5 but easily a 5 on another day"

22/08/2018

I stayed here last night for work as meetings in Norwich Its easy to find and decent amount of parking. Very warm welcome at reception. All staff are brilliant actually and friendly. But, my room wasn't great. Two tiny windows, no air con and no fan. I was also continually disturbed by noise from slamming doors, and noise everwhere. Also people smoking outside meant a strong smell of smoke in my room. No other rooms were available and no fans available. Yes, it was a single but it was an executive room. I don't know what makes it executive tbh. But standard double rooms have air con as do double executive rooms. I think if I was in another room, I'd have had decent sleep and would have given 4/5.

186342Jules, General Manager at Best Western George Hotel, responded to this review
Dear Ceri, Thank you for bringing your concerns to my attention, and thank you for your kind comments regarding the staff. The executive single rooms are the smaller rooms in the hotel, but are all ensuite, fully refurbished with adjustable heating, 4ft queen sized beds, 32inch flat screen TV's, complimentary tea and coffee facilities and free wifi. These rooms are very competitively priced so we can offer a wide range of rooms to suit all budgets. We are very fortunate to be extremely busy so would always recommend that you book direct with the hotel as early as possible so we can personally assist you with your specific room requirements. We genuinely want each and every one of our valued guests to enjoy their stay and hope we can welcome you back in the future.

From the moment we arrived it was lovely. We received a lovely warm welcome. The staff were lovely and nothing was too much trouble. We ate afternoon tea, breakfast and a 3 course lunch and the food was faultless. There was so much choice. We had the honeymoon suite for the evening and again amazing, Immaculately clean. There is not a bad thing I can say about this hotel. The atmosphere was so welcoming we will most certainly be back again.

Hi Jemma, Many thanks for your great review, we are really pleased you enjoyed your stay and look forward to welcoming you back soon.

"Excellent staff and tasteful decor"

5
07/08/2018

From arrival to departure the staff here delivered exceptional customer service. We were amazed at the multi-tasking abilities Molly and Ian dispalayed throughout our stay and their genuine interest in our comfort whilst we stayed in this hotel made our stay enjoyable and memorable. Our room was tastefully decorated with very good air conditioning and when we were unable to sleep at Midnight due to a crying baby next door Ian did not hesitate in moving us to a quieter room even though he was left to clean our room and change the sheets etc in case further guests showed up later on in the evening. Room service was excellent and breakfast was ample and we left feeling very rested and happy so we will definitely use this hotel again. Parking was plentiful and the hotel was only 8 minutes from the main A11 to London. Best Western should be proud to have teammembers such as Ian and Molly on board. They are a credit to the company.

186342Jules, General Manager at Best Western George Hotel, responded to this review
Thank you so much for your excellent review. We really do appreciate your kind recognition of both Molly and Ian, who really are great ambassadors for our hotel, as are all the staff at The George. We are very lucky to have such a great team. Thank you once again and we look forward to welcoming you back in the near future.

"High quality service and great rooms"

31/07/2018

We stayed at the George for a night to break up a longer journey and were pleasantly surprised by the excellent customer service and by the quality of the room. We travelled with our two dogs who were made to feel very welcome too. To me it is the small things that distinguish a good hotel from an excellent one. For example, we had a couple of drinks in the bar after arriving and the bar staff asked immediately if we wanted a bowl of water for the dogs. Also we asked to leave the car in the carpark for a few hours the next day, which was no problem, and so allowed us to visit the city without having to drive in and park. This coupled with friendly and welcoming staff and great rooms impressed us and we'd love to stay again if we are in the area.

186342Jules, General Manager at Best Western George Hotel, responded to this review
Many thanks for your brilliant review Andy. So pleased you were impressed by the hotel and service. We look forward to welcoming you both, and the dogs of course, back again in the near future.

Been to Norwich a few times and looking for something just close enough to town but as a quiet retreat for the evening. BINGO!! Thoroughly recommend this hotel..refurbishment 10/10. Bar service was flawless thanks to Ian and his staff..would suggest including the breakfast as a great start to the day. All staff from housekeeping to the general manager were equally approachable and more than happy to welcome any/all feedback. Food was excellent value would totally recommend the tempura prawns!! DELICIOUS!! Keep up the great work and our thanks to all staff for their great work!!

I recently stayed here as was visiting a friend in Norwich, and can thoroughly recommend it. My room was small but perfect, with lovely bathroom. As a single lady the hotel was perfect for me. Well appointed and stocked room, perfect bathroom, and very comfortable bed. It was like being nurtured and cared for by warm, friendly and fabulous staff. The facilities are perfect, dining is a real treat with a fabulous menu plus snacks available all day. Friends who visited were also very impressed, the disabled facilities were greatly appreciated. I have already booked to return to this great, stylish hotel.

"The best stay in Norwich"

5
24/07/2018

I'm here in Norwich on business for a year and was staying in a horrific hotel until i found this little gem! The Best Westerns vary so much in quality but here of the rooms are newly refurbished, clean, well appointed and very comfortable. They even have hairdryers with sockets near a mirror. Hats off to the chef- the food is superb and such good value for money. Everything is freshly cooked- no ping food. And best of all, the staff all seem happy, the service is excellent, they can't do enough for you- It's not often you hear staff praising the owners and management- but they do here. Jodi especially is a star, nothing is too much bother and if i still worked in hospitality i would do my best to poach her!

186342Jules, General Manager at Best Western George Hotel, responded to this review
Thank you very much for your excellent review. We really do appreciate all your comments, but 'hands off Jodie', she's ours!! :0)

23/07/2018

Just had a nice couple of nights here whilst working at the Norfolk Show ground, lovely setting just off main road into town which is just a 12min walk, set in the more upmarket area of Norwich the hotel offers good parking, staff are welcoming nothing too much trouble, food was excellent with varied menu to cater for all tastes, room was well maintained, clean and comfortable, little disappointed there were no ironing facility in the room but Im getting used to asking for them these days. Breakfast was excellent again a good choice of continental, full english with both haddock & mackerel on offer, great value good choice of beer wines and spirits all within a nice tranquil bar setting, overall a nice fairly modern hotel catering for singles, couples or families and also groups.

"Can be disappointing with issues in teh bathroom"

14/07/2018

I had an issue with the Bathroom as there was a glass screen and when you open it up to get access to the bathing area you cannot do so as it clashes with the sink area this needs to be address as it is of no use, why have the glass screen in there if you cannot open it up properly

186342Jules, General Manager at Best Western George Hotel, responded to this review
I'm so sorry to hear you had an issue with the bath screen. It is there to prevent water splashing onto the floor but apologies you did not find it suitable for your needs.

We were due in Norwich to celebrate my brothers birthday and decided to stay here as it was close to the pub that his celebrations were at. From the moment we arrived to the moment we left we were made to feel welcome. We had two double rooms and a single, the doubles had air conditioning, but the single did not, but a quick chat with someone on reception and a fan was supplied. The rooms were lovely, spacious and the beds were comfortable, my partner loved the pillows so much he wanted to take them home!! We went to the restaurant area to watch the football and the gentleman serving is a credit to the company, nothing was too much trouble for him. We all slept very well and the shower in the morning was very invigorating, a bit too much for my slightly worse for wear partner ?? When we return to Norwich we will absolutely stay again at this hotel.

186342Jules, General Manager at Best Western George Hotel, responded to this review
Thank you so much for your great review, it really is very much appreciated. Hope your partner recovers in time for Englands next match!!! We look forward to welcoming you back again soon.

Very pleasant Hotel a short 20 minute walk away from Norwich city centre. We were allocated a 'Cottage', which was a large comfortable room in one storey building. It had been recently refurbished and room and bathroom were bright and clean. Plenty of Car parking on site. Staff friendly and efficient. No time to try out the food, but Room was great.

07/07/2018

First of all, easy to get to and also close to the city but still feels out of the way and secluded. I was upgraded to what was basically a two-floor cottage and one of the best places I have stayed in any hotel around the country. Perfect air con (in 30-degree heat!), spacious, comfortable, large TV in the lounge and another in the bedroom - quiet overnight so a great night's sleep.... The upgrade is not why I will stay again though, that is just a great one off..... From the moment I arrived all the staff and managers were extremely welcoming, seemed genie more than corporate and were efficient and professional at every single contact - perfect! The food in the restaurant could not be faulted and we served very quickly. The prices were less than I would expect for the quality. So, all in all, a very satisfied customer here - thank you to the whole team for making my busy week a lot more enjoyable!

From start to finish this was such a great place to stay! We arrived and were swiftly checked in by a friendly receptionist. Our room was a good size and decorated beautifully. It was well equipped with a tea and coffee making facilities. The bathroom was a good size and the shower was lovely and powerful. It was very clean all over. The bistro was appealing and the gloriously yummy! The service was great. We plan a return visit to the bistro with other family members. You honestly couldn't stay anywhere else in Norwich for this price and quality! A must book!

Excellent hotel. Recently updated. New bathrooms, comfortable beds, clean and recently decorated, helpful staff who dealt with all request promptly. I came with a group and enjoyed sitting in our own dining room at meal times so we could enjoy each other's company. The meal selection each day was excellent although restricted , which was understandable, due to us benefiting from party rates. I have special diet needs and I was impressed that each day the chef had prepared the menu choices specially for me taking out ingredients I am allergic to. Generally I am not used to such care in menu preparation. An excellent stay

Stayed for 1 night and wish it was longer. We were greeted at reception by a very polite receptionist. We stayed in the attic room which was a very spacious suite - beautifully decorated and extremely quiet and comfortable.Lovely big bathroom with roll top bath and walk in shower. It's location was perfect on a quiet street but only 15 min walk into the city. Breakfast was very nice - help yourself buffet plus cooked to order full English again the staff were very pleasant. We stay in Norwich on a regular basis and this is the first time we have stayed here but The George will now be our number one choice.

Nice hotel fairly recently refurbished by the look of it. Found it eventually after driving past once because from the road you can't see the name “The George”, it says Arlington. Sineage needs looking at. The staff at this hotel are very good. Reception, friendly. A big shout out to Alastair who served us at dinner, an exceptionally good waiter. Sharing a room with my daughter we wanted a twin bed room. It was clean, tidy, basic. The pillows were, in my daughter's words, like bullets, really hard, but after a very long journey we were too tired to go to reception and ask if they had replacements. We invited guests to dinner, the meal was very good. Then joined by others for drinks we were very well looked after by Alistair. Lovely meal, beautifully cooked, very pleasant evening. Breakfast. We chose the full English. It was ok. We could see they were busy so didnt mind waiting. The complaint we have is being given crockery from someone else's table. Granted, the cups, saucers, cutlery had not been used (we hope) , but really, once guests have been sitting at a table you clear the lot and relay with clean crockery! You don't pass what's unused to another table surely? Someone could have handled it if not used it. We didn't like our cups, saucers etc passed to us from the table opposite.

186342Jules, General Manager at Best Western George Hotel, responded to this review
Thank you for your feedback. We do have a selection of pillows that can be chosen ranging from soft to hard, so if you were to stay again, we can certainly provide you with a pillow of your preference. We take note of your comments regarding the cutlery and can assure you we would never set any tables with unclean cutlery or crockery, sometimes covers are taken from other clean place setting to prevent guests waiting, but again they are alway clean and certainly unused. We are pleased you enjoyed both the food and service and had a pleasant evening.

“We arrived and have stayed here before although a year earlier and was met by Alistair from behind the bar, he welcomed us and promptly said he would look after us whilst we stayed assisted well by Molly, well I can assure you they both more than looked after us from the restaurant booking to even just bringing our drinks to our table whilst they was both very busy they seemed to find the time to go the extra mile, they was always happy even though we knew they did long hours and nothing was a problem, we wished all hotels was like this where ever we go. Please pass on a big thank you from Len, Sheena, Janet and Steve and also let their manager know what a great job they are doing please. Fantastic stay with fantastic staff.”

This is our second time to the The George for the Lets Rock Norwich Festival. It has been refurbished since the last time and looks great and very smart BUT it is the staff that make this place - they are all professional and accommodating and nothing is too much trouble. Special thanks to Ali and Molly and the rest of the team who were all great. We had one of the cottages away from the hotel...lovely. Oh and a mention to the chef...we had dinner the first night - wonderful and the breakfast was lovely and hot and tasty. Thank you all again and look forward to seeing you next year...if not before. Sheena and Len

We stayed here for a couple of nights to attend a festival in Norwich on May bank holiday and what a pleasant experience it was. The hotel is very well presented with clean, comfortable rooms and, in particular, a comfy bed. Unfortunately we didn't make breakfast but did enjoy an evening meal and lunch. The service and quality of the food were both excellent, recommend the rib-eye for dinner or the ham, egg and chips for lunch. All of the hotel team we met were helpful, friendly and polite, obviously all keen to help us enjoy our stay. I would like to thank Alistair for his attention and service on Friday night, top notch !

One of the best hotels,I've stayed in for a long time, whoever trains the staff wants a big compliment. From phoning up reception on the long drive down ,being disabled and my business colleague had booked a room without an accessible shower ,the lady on reception moved me to an a fully adapted cottage ,no problem sir.The young man at the bar ,great mine host was also on breakfast in the morning equally as pleasant has the night before,I'd employ Alistair, great asset to any business. If your coming to Norwich or on your way to the Broads ,stop here you won't be disappointed.Plenty if parking .

Stayed here on a recent business trip to the city. My usual hotel was full so did not have a liot of options and chose here. Had a tiny single room that had seen better days unfortunately. Staff were friendly enough and the food in the bistro was not bad. Overall, not the worst place to stay but nowhere near good enough to become my go-to hotel in Norwich.

186342Jules, General Manager at Best Western George Hotel, responded to this review
Hi Paul, We have many room types at The George Hotel, ranging from suites, deluxe double rooms, right through to standard single rooms, all priced accordingly to suit all budgets. We always ensure all rooms are maintained to a very high standard and the service is second to none, but of course we fully appreciate that on this occasion the room type you had chosen was not to your liking. Please do not hesitate to contact us if you wish to book a larger room in the future.

"Amazing anniversary stay in the Garden Suite"

5
06/05/2018

We last stayed at The George Hotel for our wedding reception 20 years ago, so we returned as a family for our anniversary. We'd booked a suite as there were no family rooms available on that date, but the Garden Suite was an amazing surprise. It is a little self-contained house behind the hotel, with its own decked garden, large sitting room and kitchenette, bathroom and bedroom with bunk beds on the ground floor and a big double bedroom upstairs. The upstairs bedroom had a little balcony, through which you can always communicate with the downstairs bedroom, making it ideal for a family with older children. The whole place is beautifully designed, with one side being a glass atrium the height of the building. It has air-conditioning too! The fridge and microwave in the kitchenette means that you can cater for yourself in a small way if you are staying for longer, which is a lovely touch. It is also very quiet! The staff matched the standards of the accommodation and more. They were friendly, efficient, attentive and we were very well looked-after. We were immediately given a complimentary bottle of wine when we mentioned that we were sitting in the same room where we had our wedding reception, and the food that went with it was delicious and very reasonably priced. Even when they were very busy at the breakfast service, nothing was too much trouble. They are all a credit to the hotel. Overall, the stay did what we needed it to do: take us completely away from the stresses of our everyday lives for a little while. Thank you!

27/04/2018

We had an excellent stay at the Best Western George Hotel. We were part of a big group and the staff honestly couldn't do enough for us all. It was clear the hotel had been recently renovated throughout and to a high quality. The entrance and reception was very inviting, the decor throughout felt fresh. The dining area was also nicely done and we were impressed with our room, clean linen & lot's storage. The car park was also very good, with plenty of spaces. Getting into Norwich centre was about a 10 minute walk with an underpass, so no need to cross any major road. Would highly recommend. We also visited on a very hot day and although the heating was on in the room (??) there was a good air con unit that quickly cooled the room down.

"Much improved decor"

26/04/2018

I wrote a review of this hotel about a year ago. Stayed again for one night in a single room. Decorated and fully refurbished, new carpets. So far so good. However, room was quite close to the bar so quite noisy and I could hear a man snoring next door, shower running etc. This was annoying but not as annoying as the shake-and-vac smell in the room (I have very little sense of smell so this must have been very overpowering to normal people) . I like this hotel very much, the staff are great, the place is relaxed, clean and tidy. I would stay here again but would request a first floor room (as I had last time) but would please ask management to just air through the rooms and not use fancy (or rubbish ) smells when they are not required.

186342Jules, General Manager at Best Western George Hotel, responded to this review
I'm pleased you liked the hotel and staff. as for the shake-and-vac, we were only trying to put the freshness back!!! :0)

25/04/2018

We had a most enjoyable weekend at The George. The hotel is well situated on a bus route to the city centre, the rooms comfortable and clean. We were given the use of a private room for dinner on the Saturday evening and the food was enjoyable and good value. The staff were excellent, very helpful both during the booking process and during our stay.

The manager and staff were most helpful and businesslike during the planning and booking stage. We enjoyed a comfortable weekend stay and a very good private dinner served in the function room. Ongoing refurbishments and improvements continue to make this a very good choice for location and service in Norwich. The room rates are extremely competitive for this level of service and accommodation. Many thanks to Julie and all the staff.

Difficult to be 'excited' about this hotel. Reasonable location for city centre, free parking, room & wi-fi fine. Dining area for breakfast/dinner is small and choice of breakfast cereals/fruit limited. Sevice was slow for our evening meal despite there only being 6 other diners, but staff are friendly and food was OK

Lovely hotel. Arrived as I booked. I have a dog with me so I am in one of the newly refurbished cottages, and very nice too. I had to change rooms sadly as the lock wasn't working but it was a minor issue and sorted within minutes. Staff are very nice and helpful. Food is lovely and service (room service as I didn't want to leave my dog too long alone in a strange place) was good. Room is comfortable and bathroom well stocked and maintained. Tea/coffee facilities were good too. Bar has a wide selection of drinks. Popular place tonight at least car parking was full. Recommend staying here. ??

29/03/2018

Very good hotel would recommend for any business users and families really. Booked directly for the best rates and got a single bed which was very large like a mini double bed. Room decor very modern and clean. Only issue with the room was no off switch for the extractor fans which operates as soon as you open bath door. It does go off so not bad Breakfast was hot and quickly served. For me the breakfast area needs some ambiance and a bit of life. Sitting in silence is not my thing.

Hi Tom Thank you for your feedback. We are really pleased to hear you liked the hotel and can confirm the dining area is next in line for a face lift where we will certainly ensure great ambiance and comfortable modern surroundings. We hope you'll come back and enjoy our new look restaurant soon.

22/03/2018

Good room, neat clean, good beds and shower but let down by breakfast. Not the biggest hotel and not that busy but when we arrived in the dining room at 8.50 and things were not good. Tables not set, tables not cleared and yet only 8 more guests having breakfast, with a staff of 3 things should have been so much better ! The breakfast buffet table was pretty empty and what remained looked quite neglected.Tea and coffee arrived quite swiftly and was good as was the two English fried breakfasts, those who had the continental breakfast were less than impressed. The staff were young and willing but needed more direction and reminding that breakfast is a quiet time not an occasion for loud conversations.

"A good alternate "

27/02/2018

We stayed for one night in the city as we couldn't get into our usual hotel. This hotel was very polished following the recent refurb although not entirely sure about the colour choice, the bedroom was a bit dark and institutional. The welcome and check in were excellent and the hotel had all the usual services. We had arrived early not expecting our room to be ready but very pleased when it was. Heard some music through the walls on Saturday night but not late and some children thundering up staircases Sunday morning but was otherwise quiet. Breakfast on Sunday morning was nice and again had great service. All in all the staff were a 5 out of 5, hotel overall 4 out of 5 and will definitely come back if our normal hotel is fully booked again.

"garden suite was an unexpected but great surprise"

5
24/02/2018

I booked fairly last minute for myself, husband and 2 children. We were expecting a family room so the garden suite was a massive but lovely surprise at very reasonable price. It was like an apartment and we were actually disappointed we were only staying a night there. It was very clean and comfortable and so much more space for 4 people than a family room. Only very minor complaint was the wet room. If someone had had a shower, the next person to use the toilet had to stand in a puddle of water! Would definitely consider staying here again if we visit Norwich.

""Highly recommended" hotel close to city centre!"

5
22/02/2018

We were delighted when we arrived at this little gem of a hotel, close to the city centre, particularly as it offered free parking. A very helpful receptionist greeted us and mentioned that they were undergoing a refurbishment and whilst most of the work had been done, the corridors were still a "work in progress". This was not a problem (we had been forewarned) and did not impact on our stay in any way. The bedroom was bright, airy and absolutely immaculate. The bathroom though small had an excellent power shower and a roomy shower cubicle. We headed to the bar where we enjoyed a few drinks served by a very attentive barman. Prices were very reasonable and there was a good choice. I have to say the breakfast was superb! A great choice and all cooked to order. Everyone arrived for breakfast at the same time but it was handled with efficiency and the food came out piping hot and very tasty. We did not dine in the evening as we were heading out to a party but what we did see, looked lovely. I would not hesitate to recommend this hotel to anyone looking for a small, friendly stay close to the city centre.

"Worth a Stay, Even Though Currently Under Re-Development"

23/01/2018

I had noticed that the hotel was under redevelopment after I had made the booking. I decided to continue with my stay, despite this, and I was pleased that I did. On arrival, there was obvious building work going on in the reception area, and there was a temporary reception and entrance to the right, just before the bar area. The staff were very efficient and friendly, so received a pleasant welcome on arrival. We were delighted with the bedroom, despite not being the largest I had ever stayed it, the room and en-suite had obviously undertaken a lovely new redecoration. Very tastefully pained walls in a sage green colour, and a very smart white en-suite with large walk-in shower. I was delighted to discover that the shower was nice and powerful; too often in hotels, the experience in a lovely looking shower space is spoiled by a feeble, luke-warm dribble. My daughter enjoyed a lovely full English breakfast, and I had a couple of rather tasty grilled kippers. The staff were very helpful as they allowed me to leave my car in the hotel car park for the morning whilst my daughter and I caught a cab to the university.

186342Jules, General Manager at Best Western George Hotel, responded to this review
Thank you very much for your great review. We are pleased you enjoyed your stay and appreciated the new furnishings. We will definitely continue to do our very best to make the George one of the best Hotels in the City and look forward to welcoming you back soon.

22/01/2018

We visited here for a long weekend. We knew in advance that there were refurbishments going on but didn't disrupt us in any way. The staff were really friendly especially the guy who worked Fri and sat eve and the two ladies on Fri and sunday eve. The room was down a warren of corridors didn't realise how big it was from the outside. Was really nicely decorated with a comfy big bed.was expecting a double was more of a super king. The only thing that was a bit odd was that the taps were set too far back on sink making it difficult to wash hands without getting water everywhere. We ate in the restaurant on the Fri evening and the food was really tasty. Same for the breakfast on the mon morning. Only a short walk from the city centre and there was ample parking. Can't wait to see it when all the refurb is finished.

I was in the George hotel over the Christmas and New year period, I have travelled quite a lot in my years and I was extremely impressed with my stay, The staff are excellent and can't do enough for you, the hotel is modern very clean and was nice warm and welcoming, the food was probably some of the best I had in Norwich and of a very high quality. In fact my stay was so good I ext need it for a further week. When I use a hotel in Norwich again I will make sure this is the only hotel I will book. Congratulations to all the management and staff at the George your doing an amazing job

"Great place to stay!"

27/12/2017

We stayed here over Xmas with two young children. We stayed in the Garden Suite which was perfect for us. It had a small bunk bed room downstairs and a double room upstairs, a little area hidden away with a fridge and sink, kettle, etc. The bathroom was like a wet room with a good shower. Beds were comfy. Could have done with a curtain over the main door/windows as kids found it a bit scary with bare windows. Comfy seating area downstairs. It was like a little apartment. We even managed to get a cheese sandwich delivered from the bar on xmas day for our fussy daughter who didn't eat much of her xmas lunch! A great little hotel! My sister also stayed in a single room which was very cosy and comfy, although she could hear the tv from the next room - earplugs were useful! Met some friends in the bar on xmas eve and had great service - a good gin selection! Not a particularly lively bar, lots of elderly people, but great if you want a quiet catchup with friends.

24/12/2017

Very shabby, heating in room didn't work, mattress old and lumpy with springs sticking up. Dreadful breakfast. Bar was cold and uninviting. I make a point of choosing Best Western hotels usually because I've previously found them to be of a consistently high standard. But the George really keys the brand down and it's nothing love a Best Western hotel.

I wasn't expecting great things, after ready so many bad reviews, but as we were only staying for one night while attending the Polar Express MNR nearby thought we would stick with it. We were not disappointed the staff were very attentive and friendly the ambiance of the public rooms was lovely and really warm. Our room was tidy smart clean and welcoming the bathroom was spotless and again warm. We had booked the family room for my daughter, which was stunning, they were really happy with that, the best family room ever. We stayed for dinner which again was very good. Overall a very positive experience. Thank you

"EXCELLANT HOTEL, PROFESSIONAL STAFF"

I have been staying on business at a number of hotels for the past 10 years, The George Hotel, Norwich, is probably one of the best hotels I have stayed at for making the guest feel at home. The staff are both professional and very friendly. It a hotel that gives value for money, with extremely good service.

We went to Thursford Christmas show. Stayed here one night. Pure luxury...despite on going renovating. Fantastic staff. Food brilliant . Room was super comfy and would not hesitate to recommend . The bar staff right through to cleaning staff were amazing.

We were lucky enough to stay in a very newly refurbished room. It was room 23 and we could not fault it. The check in and out was fast and efficient and the staff were extremely friendly. They helped us get a taxi and arrange a taxi Home from the wedding we were heading too. I couldn't recommend this hotel enough! One of the better best westerns we have stayed in.

The hotel is down a little side road and there is no noise from the A11. The check in was done very quickly and my room was on the ground floor and was easy to find along the bottom corridor. There were the usual tea and coffee making facilities and the TV, But most of all the internet was a BT hub and at last a hotel where the internet is fast and spot on, no keep dropping out while you are trying to do your work. Now the bathroom one problem only here, when you switch the HOT tap on COLD water came out, and when you switch the COLD tap on HOT water came out.The dinner was och and served in a polite manner the English breakfast was brilliant enough for to last you the whole day. Overall not a bad Hotel will stay there again i should think so.

We stayed for two nights, a short visit to Norwich. The hotel is in the process of being majorly re-furbished, this we found out about on our arrival, not before. Fortunately we were allocated room 132 which is in the refurbished part of the hotel, unfortunately you are sent along many corridors with differing floor heights, the door had been removed from the boiler room and just stood against the wall, narrowing the already narrow corridor, not brilliant if you suffer from mobility issues. The room smelt of new decor and was pleasantly decorated but not to a brilliant standard, and the toilet had plaster dust on the bowl and seat, this was reported and dealt with whilst we were out. The first morning we both had showers and the bath did not drain away at all, neither did the basin or......the toilet. We again reported this and it was dealt with whilst we were out for the day. On the last morning our showers were both just warm (not warm enough to attempt to wash my hair) I was told on reporting this that they were aware of this situation. There were other issues which we didn't report as I was beginning to feel like a picky customer which I am definitely not! I felt sorry for the staff who are obviously working twice as hard to keep the ship sailing, so to speak. The hotel is located on one of the main roads into the city and it is only a 15 to 20 minute walk to the city centre. Breakfast was lovely and a good choice, the cooked breakfast was ordered as soon as you sat down and cooked fresh. The tea and coffee tray in the room was also well supplied with a good choice of tea, coffee (decaf too) and hot chocolate. Overall we felt that we have overpaid for the inconveniences of staying on a building site. I have stayed with Best Western Hotels before and felt I received value for money, on this occasion we did not I'm afraid.

"Where to start?"

So I booked this place after staying at the best western brook hotel also in the city, which was a really nice hotel and thoroughly enjoyed it. This best western on the other hand.. I cannot find a good thing to say about it. We pulled up to what can only be described as a haunted house lookalike that hasn't been cared for in years. We went inside and was given an outside cottage.. the second I stepped foot inside I was hit by an awful wet damp smell and a room that was about the same size as the inside of my car.. I sat on the bed that felt like it had been there as long as the hotel, opened up the window to try release some of the scent and all I could hear was cars driving outside the window.. felt very uncomfortable in here.. so we phoned up and was kindly moved to a room in the main hotel. We'd already packed up the car by this point but as the lady was kind enough to sort a room we thought we would give it a go. 3 months later I'm still struggling to wonder what was worse.. the cottage or the main hotel. The paint work and decor I would be surprised if it wasn't an 8 year old that had painted it. The place was just terrible, and more expensive then a lot of hotels in the city. We couldn't stay and went to a different hotel. The only positive from this whole nightmare experience was getting our money back, so Thankyou for that! I don't like to leave negative reviews, but I really did not enjoy myself at all.

"Surprisingly good!"

A last minute booking turned out to be a good choice. Although the hotel is going through huge refurbishments and the long winding trail to find my room it was worth it. Although a bit small it was well kitted out and clean . The shower in the bathroom was wonderful and the choice of toiletries good. The bed was comfortable and the air con very efficient. The only thing against it was i could hear the peoples conversation next door, so I put the TV up. I didnt go into the bar or restaurant area but both looked good and full of life. There was ample parking too. When I next return to Norwich I would have no hesitation in staying here again.

As hotel go this is not bad slightly dated but the fact they have separate area for pet fredlily rooms for me is a winner they always leave what I like to call a care package outside your door been if you choose not to have your room made up fresh towels everyday with top up of tea and coffee priced well fredlily staff and a good place to get your head down

We were a large party and the hotel was very comfortable in spite of being in the middle of a major refurbishment. The food was excellent - well presented and piping hot. The staff very pleasant, courteous and helpful at all times. Our room was small but very pleasant. One little comment - bathrooms could be improved if handles were fitted by the bath (for those of us who are not so young)!

"Functional but not pleasant."

I've never given a 'poor' rating for a hotel before, but unfortunately that is exactly how I would describe my experience here. I was staying with a few family members (attending a family funeral in the neighbourhood). We were all disappointed with our stay. On a plus note, the bedroom was clean and pleasant, the beds comfortable and the bathroom bright and roomy. I had a good cooked breakfast too. My sister also enjoyed bar food she ordered on arrival. However, as soon as we arrived our difficulties began. I was sharing a room with my elderly parents, but it had been prepared for just two people, so we had to call reception to get another teacup and towels sent up. A short time later, I merely nudged with my knee, the stool in front of the dressing table, and a leg fell right off ! (I'm very glad I hadn't actually tried to sit on it). We had to call reception again to report the incident, but we weren't happy with the response. We were told a maintenance man would look at it at some point, but there didn't seem to be any sense of urgency about this. As my mother wanted to use the dressing table immediately, she suggested that they find a replacement stool/chair from somewhere but this was considered impossible because all the rooms were booked up. No spare furniture anywhere in the hotel? Really? So our faulty, unusable stool remained in our room, and amazingly, was still there 4 hours later, when we returned from the first part of our family funeral. Reception were called a third time, and eventually, someone arrived with two spare chairs, and took the broken stool away. Later that evening, we all returned from the second part of the funeral, and went to the bar to have some drinks. It was about eleven o'clock. It was not possible for me to buy drinks with either cash or card - all purchases had to be put on hotel room. This seemed a very inflexible and unhelpful policy to me but I didn't argue. As the bar was busy, my family and I went outside onto the terrace for a little while, until it began to rain. So we returned to the bar, to find that there were no chairs left for us in the main room, and that the only chairs available were in another room that had no lights, and was in complete darkness. We couldn't find the barman anywhere to help us with the lights, so we had to move several heavy armchairs into the main room. A glass of wine got broken in the effort. Still there was no sign of the barman, and in fact, at just half eleven, the bar appeared to be shut down and closed for the evening. How very disappointing. We all needed to be up early the next day for travel, but we also needed to unwind after an emotional day. I've never stayed in a hotel before that had such an early closure time for the bar. So overall, the best that I can say about this hotel is that is functional, as long as you are lucky enough not to have broken furniture in your room. But don't expect to enjoy yourself. I certainly wouldn't stay again or recommend it to any friends.

186342Jules, Manager at Best Western George Hotel, responded to this review
Thank you for your feedback. I'm so sorry you were disappointed with your stay and sincerely apologise for the broken stool, this of course should not have happened and been replaced immediately. Our policy is always to keep the bar open beyond 11pm if any residents wish to continue to relax and drink throughout the evening.I will certainly investigate why this did not happen on this occasion, and again apologise for the inconvenience and disappointment caused.

"Had a meeting with food added"

3
21/09/2017

Staff on arrival were more than helpful as I was giving a talk and had to bring in projector, screen, computer etc., they held the door open and showed me to the room. The meal was plated up as we were having a meeting and talk, the casserole was very tasty, new potatoes, sweetcorn, cauliflower, broccoli and carrots all cooked to perfection. It is a small hotel set on the edge of the city but in a quiet area, they are having a massive refurbishment programme and I guess it will be a great place to stay, truly within walking distance into Norwich.

"Quirky"

11/09/2017

I stayed at the Best Western George hotel for the weekend because of work. It is very quirky and the staff were very friendly and welcoming. The building itself is quite old and my room did have a damp aroma to it, but as I was only there for two nights it wasn't a major issue and I believe it is in the process of refurbishment. It was very clean throughout. Ample on site parking available too which was a bonus. The food was really nice and the bar area nice to relax after a long training day. Hopefully if I visit again in the future I can enjoy the fully refurbished rooms.

"In need of refurbishment"

3
06/09/2017

I had stayed here 2-3 years ago but place does not show any signs of being refurbished yet, which it really needs. Road works outside on main road mean significant detour to reach hotel. Car park quite small for usage. Breakfast offered a good choice. Evening meal as Ok except for "well past use by" date of side salad. Reported it to waiter, and again when checking out and offered extra BW points. Was given free gift on arrival as a platinum card holder

"In need of updating "

2
04/09/2017

Good location and easy to find in a nice setting, but the hotel itself is desperately in need of updating. The room we had was one of the few that had been modernised, but the paintwork looked shoddy and done on the cheap. The majority of the hotel is in need of a revamp and looks grubby and unloved. The hallway and stairs carpets were in desperate need of a good clean from a powerful Dyson. And the whole place had that old musty smell especially the corridors. Bags of potential but the revamp is definitely overdue. The receptionist was friendly and helpful.

186342Jules, Manager at Best Western George Hotel, responded to this review
I can assure you that the whole hotel is going through a complete refurbishment and we are using a local, talented company to implement this work. All decor and furnishings being used are of good high quality and the rooms that have already been complete are looking fantastic. The main corridors are not as yet done as this would be totally impractical having workman constantly using them on a daily basis and I hope most people would understand this. As the old saying goes, 'Rome wasn't built in a day' although we very much hope to have all our hotel bedrooms complete by the end of October.

"Small room in a tired hotel"

3
29/08/2017

The George is in an old building; modernisation is happening and is necessary. The room, in the main building, was small, just big enough for two people. The shower cubicle was very small which led to much elbow bumping whilst showering. On the plus side the staff could not have been more cheerful or helpful. Breakfast was cooked to order by a chef who could not manage crisp bacon, the rest of the meal was good. Twenty minute walk to the centre of town, a taxi back from the town centre cost £7.

186342Jules, Manager at Best Western George Hotel, responded to this review
Thank you for your review, and compliments regarding the staff. As the hotel is of the Victorian era we have rooms of many different shapes and sizes, we like to think this more an asset giving the place real character and charm, unlike the standard branded hotels. We hope to have all the bedrooms fully refurbished and upgraded by the end of October, many of which are ready now, and we are fully confident that all our guests will just love our newly presented and still 100% friendly and customer focused hotel.

So checked in and all is well!!! Then room is like living literally with some one can hear there toilet when they brush there teeth the hotel is been refurbished nice of them to let us know due to working nights which they knew used our corridor like a walkway to the canteen!!! The place is so dated with phones in the room my great grandmother would use definitely would pass you'd be highly disappointed what a shame could be so nice but everything is so wrong I'm afraid!!!!

186342Jules, Manager at Best Western George Hotel, responded to this review
Hi There, Thank you for your comments. I can understand your frustration with the situation, however we have told all booking agencies that we are in the process of a full refurbishment program which will cause some noise during the daytime and therefore may not be suitable for customers like yourself . I can see you made your booking through Hotels.com and just to be clear we received NO information to say that you were Night Workers - otherwise we would have been in contact to confirm whether we were the right establishment for you during our time of refurbishment, but as you are still checked in with us, I can only assume you are happy to stay. Please be assured that the whole reason we are going through a refurbishment is to update all the bedrooms & public areas, which includes all telephones, beds & furnishings to provide a great experience for all our guests. If you had voiced your problems directly to us rather than put it on a public platform, we could have tried our best to help you.

"Unexpected charm"

4
01/08/2017

I wouldn't normally attribute character or charm to best western, but its apparent that this hotel wasn't always a best west and there are hidden shadows of the fact that it was once a much loved family run inn. We stayed in the annexe outside comprising 4 modern rooms that are a great use of space, affording all that could be needed without any extras but doing everything it needs to on the tin. Cleanly. Breakfast is overpriced at £11 and no effort is made with it at all. Canned mushrooms.. bouncing poached eggs, generic sliced bread... With a short walk in to Norwich, certain to find much better. Night staff highly intelligent and friendly, but there seems to be something less than hospitable around a lot of Norwich people..l they can't wait to clean things away and effectively get rid of you. I spent a whole weekend scratching my head trying to get over it...

"Good Value"

I have just returned from another working weekend in Norwich were I stayed at the George Hotel for the second year running . It was again made by the Staff who make sure you are treated with good old fashioned Service . The Hotel is having some TLC work carried out at the moment but I hope they keep the charm and character you get from this place . Good Value for the money .

"Bog standard for a night's kip"

24/07/2017

The hotel is a little dated, but the bed was comfortable and okay to get your head down for a night. Shocked to find a black makeup mark over the supposedly clean towels. The one thing I would advise is not to get the breakfast - £11 is a rip off to say the least for undercooked bacon/sausages and if you're only getting a few items from the menu, it's still at the set price. Staff were friendly and helpful though.

186342Jules, Manager at Best Western George Hotel, responded to this review
Firstly I'm please to hear you found the hotel comfortable. however I do sincerely apologise for the marked towel and will ensure our head housekeeper is informed. Our full English breakfast is always freshly prepared and cooked to your specific order, and along side the full selection of cooked breakfast, tea, coffee and toast you are also welcome to choose from the cold meats, cheese, breads, pastries, croissants, yogurts, fruit bowls, cereals, fruit juices and preserves, which i hope most would find acceptable at £11.00 pp.

"Comfortable, Clean and Friendly"

22/07/2017

We stayed here for a couple of days while attending our son's graduation. Our room was light and airy, and the twin beds were very comfortable. We were lucky to have air conditioning - in fact I believe we were in the first room to be connected. Nice big bathroom. The only thing I found missing were bedside lamps. The service in the bar and restaurant was excellent. We would stay here again.

17/07/2017

The hotel was clean and staff were very friendly. I had a single room. Clean and comfortable with en suite, but in my opinion, slightly overpriced. Breakfast was good, continental and full English option. Very enjoyable. My only grumble was bring woken up at 7:30 by the floorboards and noise from the room above, but can't really hold that against the hotel itself.

186342Jules, Manager at Best Western George Hotel, responded to this review
Thank you for your review, we are pleased you had a comfortable stay and along with all the ongoing refurbishments, the floorboards are being upgraded, which will eliminate any future noise. We hope you will come back and stay again soon.

05/07/2017

What can I say? This place is tired, booking mixed up (but sorted) 1970 avocado mens loo, instant coffee in a cafetiere, leaky roof, shower that sprayed the whole bathroom, bar staff who just wanted to go home, and to top it all there didn't appear to be a grown up to discuss our disatisfaction.

186342Jules, Manager at Best Western George Hotel, responded to this review
As previously stated in our comments, the hotel is in the middle of a full refurbishment as I'm sure you were aware during your stay. We are working as hard as possible to get this completed. I can assure you we never use instant coffee in our cafetières, we always use ground coffee beans and during breakfast service we use filter coffee. As all hotels around the world, we have a wide range of staff of different ages, all of which are more than capable of speaking with you to discuss any problems you might have had, I'm just sorry you did not let us know at the time so we could have assisted you.

"Hotel is being improved"

03/07/2017

I have used this hotel a few times before...... Norwich for some reason is busy this time of year and my work could only book me in a Single room...... Not hotel's fault...but I like large bed....Small single is not my first choice. Room was I think still small....I had to move a chair to door as it blocking the way in the bathroom. I understand single room is going to be small, but it would be hard to swing a cat in the room......not that I would ever think of doing so....as unkind to a cat. A wedding party was eating when I reached the hotel, and as the room they were in was just across from mine...I could hear them while in my room. Thankfully they did NOT have music in the evening....that would have been very bad for my sleep. Had a meal in restaurant which was to normal standard,as I said...I have stayed before. Breakfast on Sunday starts 08.00....which was to late for me,as I need to start work at 08.20 a few miles away. Thankfully the Chef agreed that I could have earlier breakfast....and it was cooked and just waiting for my choice of eggs when I came in....I had place my order in the evening so Chef would know what I wanted. So THANKYOU Chef....Hotel for helping my get cooked breakfast before a long day.

186342Jules, Manager at Best Western George Hotel, responded to this review
Thank you for your review. We will certainly try and offer a double room when you next stay. Please be aware Saturdays are always busy, so it's best to book as early as possible to get a double room or larger single. Glad we were able to help out with your breakfast and we look forward to welcoming you back soon.

"Great little Hotel with fab staff"

26/06/2017

As soon as we walked into the Hotel we were greeted by a big smile and hello, good start...from then on it only got better. We had one of the cottages - really nice and clean - in fact spotless. We were there for the Lets Rock Norwich festival. This Hotel is great as a base and the breakfast was lovely. The staff could not do enough for us and always with a smile. I would like to mention Charlotte (reception) when we arrived and Judith who was always happy and accommodating and last but not least Hannah in the bar such a lovely young lady. Thank you all we had a fab time. Sheena and Len

"Decent clean hotel with comfortable bed"

25/06/2017

Needed a hotel close to Earlham Park so this came up and despite some mixed reviews I booked here. I arrived around 11am and my room was still occupied but was able to leave my bags in the office safely. When I did come back and got into room in was spacious, had room in block outside hotel, clean but had a musty smell. The bed was comfortable but please some softer pillows!! The shower was clean with plenty of hot water, the staff all friendly and helpful plus a hot tasty freshly cooked breakfast with plenty of hot toast. Not sure how far from city centre and under going renovation so when finished should be a good base to get around if you in the city.

186342Jules, Manager at Best Western George Hotel, responded to this review
Thank you very much for your review. We are so pleased you enjoyed your stay. Norwich City centre is just a 10 minute walk and 3 minute bus ride away, so the George really is a great base to explore the City. We are in the process of updating the whole hotel, and we really hope you will come back and see us again soon and enjoy all Norwich has to offer.

"Don't book if you're fussy"

4
17/06/2017

Yes, the hotel is being renovated. It's on the website. My un-renovated room was clean, with well pressured hot water, etc. The air con isn't working but I have something called a window. Can't believe people who just want to moan. Read before you book. Food is excellent as is the service.

186342Jules, Manager at Best Western George Hotel, responded to this review
Thank you so much for your review. We are so pleased to have a frank, honest and genuinely supportive review whilst we are going through all our renovations, which we hope will make our hotel the best in the city. Hope you can come and stay again soon.

"Don't bother"

2
13/06/2017

Yes, its undergoing a refurbishment, so best not to bother. I started in a double room which was tiny, the bathroom was updated (hopefully not finished as the quality of finish was poor), there was an air conditioning unit in the room but this isn't working yet, so the room was unbelievably stuffy. So I asked to move, which they moved me to a room twice the size with no problem at all. (Why then didn't I get a better room to start with I wonder?) I was with a group of people, another also moved rooms due to it smelling like a toilet! While a large room, it is clearly in need of an update. But one has to ask, if a hotel puts on SINGLE PLY toilet paper, what difference will an upgrade make? On a more positive note, the staff were friendly. (Even if there were not enough of them) and there was hot chocolate provided on the tea, coffee tray. Oh and don't expect to stay in the restuarant after 9 o clock in the evening! while it is a ten minute walk into town, if you want to walk to the cathedral or castle thats half an hour.

186342Jules, Manager at Best Western George Hotel, responded to this review
Thank you for your feedback. We are having a full renovation of the hotel and every room is being refurbished and hopefully you will understand that the aircon system has to be put in place throughout the hotel before it can utilised, so our apologies it was not available during your stay. We are confused by your comments on the toilet paper as we always use good quality paper in every room. The restaurant certainly is open till 9.30 pm Monday to Saturday and 9pm on a Sunday and we are always very flexible to stay open later if asked to do so.

"Overall rating speaks for itself"

3
12/06/2017

Ok well I hate writing bad reviews, but if your looking for somewhere special to stay look elsewhere. The only reason we booked the hotel was location as we were in Norwich for a wedding being held nearby. The room was too small for the amount of furniture crammed in, it was really hot, decor didn't match i.e. mismatch curtains, lamps, bed runner. Plastering not patched up in places where they'd chased cables in walls, loose plug sockets. Bathroom had wobbly toilet seat and wonky cold water tap. Quite thick dust everywhere. No handle on the outside of door to shut the door behind you. Perhaps when the hotel has finished it's renovations things may be better as family also staying at the hotel said their room was nice and had air con!!! Think we definitely got the short straw. I have to say I agree with a few of the latest reviews public areas had grubby carpets, walls need a fresh lick of paint. We did eat in the restaurant on Friday evening and the food was ok but I wouldn't say it is worth the price. Staff could also do with some dining room training, e.g. the tables are set with water glasses and wine glasses but we were not asked if we were having either, we had to ask for steak knives, used glassses not cleared from the table. I appreciate it wasn't busy but bar was cashed up by 10.20 pm is this Best Western policy when hotel bar is not busy? On the plus side the staff are very nice, friendly and chatty and the breakfast was superb, very nice lady serving breakfast on Saturday morning. Unfortunately i wouldn't like to recommend to a friend and would probably not stay here if we stayed over in Norwich again.

186342Jules, Manager at Best Western George Hotel, responded to this review
Thank you for your comments. We are undergoing a full refurbishment of the hotel including all rooms and once they are complete we will be replacing all carpets in the front of house areas and corridors. We do hope you will return so you can experience the significant improvements being made.

"Mattress should've been replaced 10 years ago"

1
02/06/2017

Short version: Tatty room, ancient mattress, terrible night's sleep Our room didn't look anything like the rooms shown in the photos on Hotels.com. Perhaps they keep those rooms in pristine condition -- no guests allowed, only professional photographers? The room we were in was tatty and tired-looking, but my main issue was with the mattress. I could feel every single uncomfortable metal spring in it so getting to sleep was impossible. It's the only mattress I've come across that was actually painful to lay on -- not fit for a dog to use. If I'd been on my own, I'd have moved to a different room or turned the mattress upside down. The mattress on the other bed was very bouncy and offered little support, but was not a problem for one night. In the morning I took the sheets off and it reminded me of the sort of mattresses you occasionally see dumped in the countryside. The hotel needs to throw their one into the skip in the car park, douse it in petrol, and throw a match on it. I'm happy to supply the petrol and matches, if the hotel promises to send me a video of it going up in flames -- that's how much I hate that bloody mattress. Another issue was the shower -- the classic scalding hot one moment and ice-cold the next. I had to give up in the end, despite a decent amount of perseverance. I'm glad we were only here one night and was happy to leave, never to return.

186342Jules, Manager at Best Western George Hotel, responded to this review
So sorry to hear you were not happy with your stay. I can certainly guarantee that all issues are being addressed with our new refurbishment program and really hope you will give us another try once completed.

Lovely stay at the Best Western. I would recommend one of the cottages if you can get one. There very quite and close to the car park so its handy for luggage! Very friendly staff who were happy to help when I locked my self out my room ( embarrassing!) would 100% stay here again!

My room had recently being refurbished so the condition was excellent. It was very clean and comfortable, albeit somewhat small. However, the size was fine for a single person. Our party had booked the hotel on a half board basis. The food was consistently good, with an excellent choice of well presented food at dinner time, which was served promptly on hot plates. The breakfast was also good, albeit they should provide unsweetened muesli and yoghurts. The staff were consistently helpful and cheerful.

"Not worth the price "

17/05/2017

My room was not the best. It was at the back of the hotel and the corridors were very hot and there was many of them which is a sign of Victorian nature of the property. The room was also hot and stuffy and when opening the windows I discovered the view was of a tin roof and the back of the kitchen, so not the best. The mattress was of poor quality and squishy and very bouncy. As there was no way to control the temperature in the room I slept with the windows open but when the rain came down in the night and sound in the tin roof outside meant that I had to close it due to noise so the room got stuffy again. There seemed to be a problem with the water as both taps chucked out hot water. It took a long time to get the shower usable and even then it didn't maintain its temperature, although the pressure was brilliant. We ate in the restaurant for dinner and the food was quite tasty. Sadly when I went down in the morning and asked if I could have some tea and toast that somehow turned into me having an overpriced (£8) "continental" breakfast. I was brought 1 slice of toast and when the waitress brought out the next slice my comment that the toast was burnt was dismissed with no offer to replace it. The rest of the continental offering were dismal but I had a yoghurt and a slice of ham in an attempt to make it worth the price. They only had jam and marmalade to put on the toast. I would have told reception my opinion on my stay but no one asked how my stay was. I was presented with an amount to pay without a bill to check although one was provided when I asked. Overall I would say that this hotel was adequate but tired for a 3 star hotel, it is certainly overpriced at £70 per night plus breakfast. They do seem to be updating some of the rooms which my colleague had right next to her room but she was overwhelmed with the smell of paint and awoken by the noise of the builders before 8am. Overall, not a great experience.

My company booked this hotel for the week. It is GROSS! Carpets not hoovered, no fitted sheets on the beds, hairs in the bathroom, extremely noisy, no temperature control, very outdated, just horrible. I would have given it one star but the food in the restaurant is amazing! Such a shame that the hotel can't match the restaurant.

186342Jules, Manager at Best Western George Hotel, responded to this review
Thank you for your feedback. We are so sorry you were disappointed with your stay. We are now at the start of our full refurbishment plan and are very confident this will improve all the facilities 100% and our rooms will be as fantastic as our restaurant.

"Run down"

01/05/2017

Although in a good location 10 mins walk to the centre this place needs updating. Corridors need painting. The building itself needs painting. some positives staff freindly enough and room had full facilities. Just think they could do alot more with it

"Dog friendly - but relegated to a prefab in the car park!"

3
27/04/2017

Hotel is a great location in the leafy golden triangle - if you have a dog (and we did, very quiet well-behaved non-shedding) just be aware that you are allocated one of four rooms that are basically in a prefab in the car park. Rooms were clean, recently decorated and fit for our purpose - a one night functional stay whilst we explored the area looking for houses... but would have definitely put a damper if we had wanted a more special trip. It's not as though we could then even enjoy the hotel facilities! Totally understand the risks and judgements that hotels must make - dirty dogs, badly behaved, noisy dogs etc - when deciding dog policy and we were grateful for finding somewhere in Norwich that would take us in! But when we can stay in some 5* hotels in London without a hitch and a dog... Hotel staff were pleasant and helpful / efficient with all check in / check out etc and ample parking on site too.

"Unremarkable but adequate"

3
22/04/2017

I've looked at other rooms and agree. So I had a single room that was clean and comfortable, with enough room, but needs updating. If you just want a bed and a decent shower (or bath) this room was fine. However. Plug sockets hidden (another reviewer said this) The heating was on full Thai brothel hotness all night with no means to turn it off. This is fine if we are ten foot deep in snow but not when average temperatures are into double figures. 2 radiators - one in the bathroom, one in the room. Had to sleep with window open (not great because I'm a hay fever sufferer, although it was fairly peaceful apart from the birds at 5am which I like but others might not) The shower. Water jet powerful but the holster can't hold the shower head because the force of the water means it hits the bath, flies off and soaks the room....you can't stand under it which is annoying and simple for them to fix. I had a quiet night but you can hear when next door switch their shower on - otherwise it's pretty quiet. I didn't eat here because I'd made arrangements elsewhere but the menu seemed nice. Staff polite. It's about 15 minutes walk into the city which suited my needs. Plenty of parking. Room 116. Also it's set in leafy suburbs which were great for a walk. No noise from traffic

"Great George!"

23/03/2017

The hotel was easy to find, even though we arrived after dark, and there was plenty of space for parking right outside the front door, which was a great relief after a four hour drive! The rooms were clean and cosy, with modern en-suite bath and shower facilities and windows that were easy to open. The staff were extremely helpful. On hearing that my daughter and I were vegan, the waiter went to great lengths to check what was suitable on the menu and the chef made us a special vegan version of their baked mushroom with roasted vegetables - the best mushroom we had tasted in years! If we are ever in Norwich again we will definitely go back to the George. Many thanks to the staff for making our stay so memorable and enjoyable.

"Overnight for work"

3
16/03/2017

I was booked in here for an overnight stay for work and was given a room (17) which was a single room which was disappointing. As others have said the hotel is being refurbished and Room 17 reflected that because I found it a little bit shabby with paintwork needing improving and the general care of the room could certainly have been better. The TV was in a very strange place which made it unwatchable from in bed and the world's smallest tub chair while comfortable was aged to say the least. For the first time I didn't like anything on the menu but merely personal choice so I didn't eat in the hotel or visit the bar so can't comment. The staff I encountered were extremely polite and efficient especially the lady at breakfast. All in all adequate but unremarkable..................

"Requires up-dating"

2
16/03/2017

Staying here for business & while the bed, bathroom is average... Trying to concentrate during the day is becoming very hard to come by due to the noisy car park & floor boards where when someone walks past, it sounds like they have just walked into the room. The desk is covered with a lampshade, alarm clock & a phone & because the desk is quite small in itself is a nightmare to work from. The plug sockets have been hidden as best as possible. To top it all off, while I am typing away I am facing into a huge mirror which is very distracting. For those who are not aware I have very dashing features & although I like admiring myself, looking at myself for 5 hours a day is very distracting & simply quite odd. Food itself is quite nice though.

"Good for town centre"

15/03/2017

Friendly and efficient staff, good beer and good food. To be picky I suppose the liver and bacon I had for dinner was a little over cooked. Had a single room which was pokey, the bathroom was nearly as big as the bedroom!

"Just one night "

12/03/2017

Very little to complain about in the George in Norwich. We spent only one night and it was comfortable and clean. The room was not particularly big but a good enough size. It was exceptionally convenient for our needs with good parking. Really it was good enough.

"Lovely little hotel"

26/11/2016

We stayed here for 2 nights Saturday 19/11/16 to Monday 21/11/16, whilst on an organised break, taking in a trip to the Thursford Christmas Spectacular. An absolute gem of a hotel, the staff were stretched to the limit on the Saturday night, but took great care to make our stay as comfortable and streamline as possible. Some of the bedrooms are a little tired (and central heating radiators could possibly have done with a bleed), but ours was comfortable and functional. All linen snow white and towels soft and fluffy. Our meals were included and these were first class; we even took the opportunity to convey our compliments personally to the rather embarrassed chef! The bar was well stocked and prices reasonable. Can highly recommend!

"Another restful stay"

26/11/2016

I was booked in The George Hotel once again....I have stayed here before.....and will be here again next week. The hotel car park had a coach already parked......so I thought I might have the passengers in restaurant already. I checked in.....asked when coach party eating and made sure I got in restaurant BEFORE they came down. Had room 127......upstairs at rear of building. Hotel I think is little old.....and long walks, door way, steps until I found my room. Room was ok.......dumped my stuff and went to eat. Service was alright...staff seem to chat with people in bar....and happy feel to place. I ordered meal, and others came in or were already seated....service was smooth and good. I had my meal and returned to room. Wi-Fi was good...... Water a bit slow.....main light in bathroom not working...but had light over sink which was fine when I had a bath. found hot water comes out cold tap in sink unless you let it run a while......pipes must travel near each other......but ok. As ever when I stay in Norwich (for work) I use PC,read and relax. Kettle was big enough for MY big mug. Tea,music and read before taking stuff to car and heading for breakfast. Gave key back once I had put stuff in car. I have asked if I can have one of the cottage (I think they call them) rooms,i had one on my first stay when I stay next week. We shall see... Not a bad hotel, served my needs.

"Avoid Room 126"

3
17/11/2016

Really nice looking hotel, lovely bar and restaurant area and the staff were great too. Unfortunately in room 126, although a nice clean room, the sounds of water and pipes kept waking me up during the night and there was practically no pressure in the shower.

"Decent, friendly hotel"

14/11/2016

This is a pleasant hotel, set in an old building which has character. Nice bar and restaurant. Rooms have all the basics and are comfortable. The staff are excellent, friendly and helpful. The Garden Room is brilliant for families.

"Ok, but there is much better"

3
27/10/2016

Stayed here for work. The hotel is very dated and the rooms need an overhaul... as do the bathrooms. The place is a bit of a warren and is not overly suitable for people with mobility issues. The shower in my room (129) was pitiful, but the towels seemed new (thick and fluffy). I probably wouldn't stay here again. Breakfast was a bit hit and miss - the staff in there are very nice, but more organising of some kind of system needs to be done.

"Mixed bag"

3
26/10/2016

Stayed for 1 night as we were seeing some friends the next day. The staff were friendly and helpful. They have a well stocked, reasonably priced bar. Breakfast was very good - good choice, well cooked and quality ingredients (including gf toast). This is an old building and so you expect rooms to not be perfect but as well as a very soft bed the plumbing gurgled loudly all night meaning I didn't have a particularly good nights sleep. We did have a large bathroom, but the shower barely dribbled out. Might stay again but only if we got a better room.

"Cheap and friendly"

3
23/10/2016

Stayed here for 1 night as we were in Norwich for a concert. Staff very friendly and helpful. Room very clean, but a bit dated. Bed very comfortable and linen good quality. Main lights didn't function in the room or bathroom so had to make do with desk lamps and mirror light and shower was a dribble. We would have mentioned these things had we been staying longer but they didn't affect us. Overall decent value and convenient location for the city.

"Friendly staff and clean rooms"

3
22/10/2016

We enjoyed our stay here. The staff were friendly and keen to make sure we enjoyed our stay. The room was clean and warm. We had a teenager with us and it really was a triple room, as advertised, so it was a proper single bed and not just a sofa bed. We forgot toothbrushes and they happily supplied them free of charge. Toiletries were good. Breakfast was excellent: they had gluten free bread - even though they didn't advertise the fact, the smoked haddock was large and perfectly cooked and the cooked breakfasts really good. They had quality tea and coffee available in the rooms. The bar was very reasonably priced and they had a really good range of drinks. The downside - the double bed was so soft it was like a hammock and not great for a full nights sleep and the shower trickled water out so I ended up having to take a bath. Having said that we would be prepared to try the hotel again as it may just be that room...

"Convenient for uni visit"

22/10/2016

Great hotel. Booked 2 single ensuite rooms for son and I. Really good value. Evening meal inexpensive and lots of choice. Breakfast very tasty and good value. Staff couldn't have been more helpful. Late check out no problem. Looking after our luggage whilst we visited Norwich arts uni, no problem. Staff really seemed happy to be working there - very unusual these days. Well done!

"George best Western Norwich "

18/10/2016

We had a lovely overnight stay at the George Best Western. It was my birthday and we had balloons thoughtfully placed on the bed. We were given the George Suite (attic room) which was fab although my 6'3" partner could only stand full height in certain parts of the room. I had asked for a bottle of chardonnay to be waiting in the room but this didn't happen so we happily bought our own although we did have to percure a glass from the restaurant. The room was really warm so we had to open lots of windows. We had the attic room so heat rises I expect. The food in the restaurant was very ordinary and we didn't have breakfast. The walk into Norwich is do-able from there but if you are wanting to get to the Riverfront then it's probably best by taxi. Will come again in the New Year.

"Dog Friendly Hotel"

4
16/10/2016

We desided to take a last minute break to the east coast, we don't generaly take our 10yr old lab on holiday unless we go camping. So a hotel and the dog was a leap into the unknown. This was a realy posative experience for us. The hotel allows dogs to stay in two of the " cottage suites" in a bungalow type building at the rear of the property. Or "suite"201. Entred via its own front door into a spacious double bedroom and large ensuite bathroom. Furnished to a good standard and typical of many similar hotels. The curtains were not to my taste but that is a personal thing. Dogs are allowed in the bar but not the rest of the main hotel. They sell real ale here and my Adnams beer was fine as was my wifes Aspels cider. Prices are reasonable your usual sort of pub price. We had breakfast in the morning which was pretty good. The staff we encountred were chatty and polite as were the other guests. The carpark is large and free. All in all an enjoyable stay in a comfortable bed and 20 miles from our final destination Cromer.

186342Jules, Manager at BEST WESTERN George Hotel, responded to this review
Thank you for your review. We do love dogs here and like you said, put certain rooms aside to accommodate them. We are really pleased you enjoyed your stay and hope you and your family (including the lab of course) will visit us again soon.

Stayed one night 14/10/16 were given the garden room which was spacious and lovely, well equipped with little extras. We are looking to return again in December...relaxed atmosphere and smiling staff...

09/10/2016

I stayed here for one night in October and was allocated a double room which was very spacious and comfortable (despite the rather dubious mustard colour on the walls). I like individual hotels like the George and the staff were really friendly and helpful. The bar is well stocked and whilst I didn't eat dinner in the restaurant the cooked breakfast the next morning was superb. They even do properly cooked poached eggs....always a plus! One slight moan - the main building was apparently having water pressure / boiler issues which left the shower a lukewarm mist but the receptionist immediately knocked money off my bill in compensation.

186342Jules, Manager at BEST WESTERN George Hotel, responded to this review
Thank you very much for your review. We are really pleased you enjoyed your stay, and thank you for your kind comments regarding the food and the staff. Hopefully the mustard coloured walls will be gone once the refurbishment that starts in January is complete. We look forward to welcoming you back to the George again soon.

Checked into this hotel 7th October, checked out again within 15 minutes. Was given keys to double room, had to negotiate several narrow corridors and door opening issues, upon arrival at our room we were met with a most obnoxious smell, which can only be described as like a wet dog had been sleeping in there. In need of total refurbishment. The staff were helpful in that they offered another room which unfortunately had the same smell as the first one. Would not recommend.

186342Jules, Manager at BEST WESTERN George Hotel, responded to this review
We are always disappointed by reviews such as yours as we work very, very hard to ensure each and every guest is treated with the utmost respect and given the best possible service. The long narrow corridors are characteristic to many authentic Victorian town houses and something we would never change. I'm sure if you had stayed more than 15 minutes we could have ensured you had a great stay.

07/10/2016

Why is it that I'm constantly disappointed with single rooms in hotels?! First room I was allocated had some sort of pipe work in a cupboard which made a horrendous noise as I was about to go to bed. Second room not noisy but had very little light. Carpet was grubby in the rooms and in general areas

This is a very poor hotel.no heating or hot water for 3 days. Our room was Desparate and was both small ,smelt fusty, limited storage and poorly decorated and furnished.Shower was ineffectual when working and very difficult to enter/exit with no grab rails.Basically an accident waiting to happen.Public cloakrooms in the lobby very tired. The place generally did not seem cleanThe whole place needs a full investment and makeover.Staff helpful and food quite nice though. No lift. Overall this hotel should be avoided.Generally hopeless

186342Jules, Manager at BEST WESTERN George Hotel, responded to this review
Again, as we said to you during your stay, our sincere apologies for the issues you had with your room. Unfortunately, as you are already aware, we could not move you to a different room due to the hotel being full, otherwise we certainly would have. We are of course really disappointed you still felt the need to be so disparaging on a public platform, but thankfully most of your group were very understanding and happy regardless. Please understand the staff always try to do the very best they can, and the refurbishment of the whole hotel should be starting January, but that is up to the proprietor and owner, not the manager and staff.

We stayed here for one night after taking our daughter to University. The service was great. The only member of staff we saw seemed to do everything from checking us in to serving drinks. He is a credit to the company and I wish I'd got his name. We had a problem with our room. There was a dreadful constant noise from the heating system so my husband reported it. The same man came to see what it was and moved us straight away. I haven't given the hotel full marks because it looks very tired and is in need of modernising. The shower was a trickle albeit plenty of warm water. The bed was very comfortable so had a good night sleep which is the main thing. The cleanliness could do with improvement. Under the bed was very dusty. Saying all that for the money we paid, the service and location we would stay again. Next time we'll try the restaurant in the hotel as the food looked lovely.

This is a medium sized very comfortable hotel 15 minutes walk to the city of Norwich. We checked in and were given a fabulous room with a king sized bed. This hotel has a very nice cosy bar with excellent service. Drinks are not too expensive. There is a lovely seating area just outside .Breakfast at this hotel is superb, They provide an excellent buffet and also serve hot food. Their fruit salad is outstanding as is the hot food. Staff are very efficient and helpful.

Excellent staff made an otherwise good stay great, they could not do enough to make the stay pleasurable, their local knowledge was excellent and tended to my every need. "Not Great!"

2
21/09/2016

Stayed here for one night on a business trip, could choose any hotel in the area however chose this due to convince to the University rather than price (there were cheaper hotels, some with gym and pool facilities in the area) Hotel is very dated and un kept. The walls were dirty with a tea stain down the wall by the light switch in my room on arrival. ( walls in general had lots of marks on) Bedside lamps stained, alarm clock full of dust on the bedside table, dirty spoon on the tea tray) Bathroom seemed newly refitted although taking a shower was a long process as it took a while for the water to get hot in the evening and the water pressure was very slow. I was in a ground floor room which seemed to have the water or heating pipes running along the room, it was extremly warm with no air conditioning and constant sound of the pipes (almost like the heating was on) through the night. I tried to have the window open however with the heavy vegetation outside I had to content with several daddy long legs, spiders and beetles during the evening...there was no way I wanted to be greeted with any further insects during the night. The walls are paper thin, upstairs were stomping about and people coming and going outside my room (think I had janitor or staff rooms outside) you could hear everything. I ate in the restaurant in the evening. There were two menus to choose from (feeling rather tired I ordered a sandwich and soup and aimed for an early night) The soup was lovely, chips were fab however the sandwich was served on extremly stale brown bread which needless to say was un-eaten. Not really much positive to say to be honest. Staff were ok, it was very quite when I arrived...the staff in the bar and restaurant were mostly playing on there phones but we're fairy attentive to me (only person in there) I wont choose to stay here on my next visit I will go elsewhere.

186342Jules, Manager at BEST WESTERN George Hotel, responded to this review
Thank you for your feedback. All the issues you have mentioned such as air-conditioning and the walls are either being addressed or will be addressed during the refurbishments. All the staff know full well they must not use their personal phones during work time, so I am very disappointed you found them on their phones on you arrival and please be assured this issue will be resolved immediately.

"Clean But...."

21/09/2016

Although my single room was spotlessly clean, crisp white sheets can't disguise the ancient mattress that just sags/crumples when you sit or lay on it. It's ok in your grandma's spare bedroom cos she's had it since 1974 but not ok in a hotel. The other down was the noise. It is a creaky old hotel which is fair enough but the walls are paper thin so you hear every conversation of passing guests in corridor (I'm not too interested in the problem the lady was having with her tights!) + fire door outside my room has hinges that squeel every time they are opened by every guest that passes + I'm currently listening to next doors bath running. Staff were very pleasant, & it was relatively cheap @ £60 for a single but I won't be rushing back.

186342Jules, Manager at BEST WESTERN George Hotel, responded to this review
Thank you for your input. We are aware of the noise from the flooring and when the hotel progresses with the full refurbishment the floorboards are all going to be replaced to solve this issue, and as you say, we do try and reflect this in the prices charged.

14/09/2016

Stayed for a business meeting booked in by the university. I have never written a bad review before but the owners of this place need a wake up call. Other than an unhelpful receptionist when I arrived, the staff were excellent, attentive, flexible and polite. Unfortunately the room was appalling. Bathroom tiny, linoleum floor uneven, thick black mould round the bath, the bath itself scratched plastic and the shower simply unusable. The only way to wash my hair was to take the shower head off and hold the pipe over my head. Eat here maybe but stay somewhere else.

186342Jules, Manager at BEST WESTERN George Hotel, responded to this review
So sorry to hear you had such a poor experience. As said previously, the owners are in the process of agreeing a full refurbishment for the whole of the hotel, which obviously all staff and management are looking forward to immensely. Please be aware, a lot of the rooms have already been upgraded so I do apologise you did not experience one of these rooms during your stay.

"Good food and excellent Garden suite"

4
01/09/2016

We stayed here for 2 nights over the bank holiday weekend. We booked the garden suite as we wanted a bit more space to relax. The 2 bed room is like a house at the back of the hotel and was exactly what we needed. Big leather sofas and the kitchenette was great! My only criticism was that the floor needed a really good clean downstairs and it was a struggle not to flood the wet room. The little terrace could do with some new furniture too. We ordered room service on the Friday evening and the food was lovely and fresh. The breakfast selection was great and made a change to get hot food to order rathe than a hot buffet. We will definitely stay again!

"Nice Food, Shame About the Rooms"

2
22/08/2016

We went here for a long weekend while visiting friends. The positives were the food at breakfast - not the usual Best Western buffet scrum down but cooked to order and very good. The waiting staff were generally good and the reception staff were always attentive and helpful. BUT... We were put in a room in an outbuilding called "The Cottage". DO NOT STAY THERE. The rooms are dated, poorly designed and not fit for purpose. They would work well for single people but for couples it's a tight squeeze, the bathrooms are dangerous with slippery tiling on the floors and incredibly badly designed with a huge step in and out of the shower which could be completely impractical for anyone with mobility issues as there is NOTHING to hold on to. My view is The George is trying to market itself as an upmarket bistro with a Hotel attached and Best Western should be a lot better than this. Demolish The Cottage, completely renovate and re-design the rooms and you might have a decent property on your hands. At the moment, unless you're going for a meal alone, I can't recommend it at all.

186342Jules, Manager at BEST WESTERN George Hotel, responded to this review
Thank you for your feedback. We have already started on the refurbishment of the cottage rooms which we hope to have completed by November. All you have suggested regarding design is all in hand, but thank you anyway.

"Very impressed with the whole experience"

22/08/2016

We had our reservations reading the reviews on TripAdvisor especially with staying with a 5 week old baby, but I'm pleased to say that we couldn't have asked for more. We stayed in the Garden Suite which had 2 bedrooms and a living area and kitchenette. The rooms were reasonably priced, tidy and comfortable, with the only drawbacks being that the carpets were well used, and the shower/wetroom seemed to overwhelm the drain. Both of these weren't show stoppers for us as we felt the place was clean enough for a newborn and we had loads of room for all the newborn paraphernalia. These minor issues could be easily dealt with by Best Western to bring up the room another notch. Overall; very pleased.

186342Jules, Manager at BEST WESTERN George Hotel, responded to this review
Thank you very much for your review. We are so pleased you had a good stay and hope to welcome you back again soon.

"NOT BAD..BUT HOW MUCH SHOULD YOU REALLY PAY?"

19/08/2016

First the good news. Generally friendly, professional service, excellent breakfast (it would cost you £11, by the way, if it wasn't included), well-stocked bar with efficient barman who knew was a "large Scotch" meant without having to ask (£5.40 in case you're interested). Clean room, decent-sized telly (which, amazingly, was easy to turn on and off). Now, the not-so-good. Very antiquated, noisy plumbing. No cold water from hand basin (this was fixed on the second of two-day visit by a friendly and professional plumber). Tepid water for bath or shower if taken between 07,30 and 08.30. Finally, I was charged £85 per night (Monday and Tuesday, mid-August), when a friend of mine, a regular guest, assures me he has never paid more than £70 (sometimes £60), even this year. I would suggest £85 is a tenner or more above what I would expect to pay for b & b at an out-of-centre, small-city, 3-star hotel. And, of course, it's not the hotel's fault if people slam doors at 6 in the morning and start shouting up the corridor about how many medals "Team GB" (what a ghastly expression) had won at the Olympics the night before!

"Avoid unless necessary"

2
17/08/2016

I stayed here for one night as it was very close to my business meeting the next morning. All I can say is that you should avoid this hotel unless absolutely necessary!! The room smelt musky and unclean. The light above the sink didn't work, the shower was a complete joke in terms of pressure! I would have been better off boiling the kettle a few times to wash my hair. Also I was on the front and as the windows are old the noise of everyone coming in and out was pretty bad! I mentioned the light to the receptionist on check out as well as the water and she just half laughed and said she knew!!!! I would strongly advise this hotel closes down for a serious refurbishment!!!!!! Admittedly my single room was only £60 per night but I think even this is over charging! On the plus side the food in the restaurant was lovely!!!!

186342Jules, Manager at BEST WESTERN George Hotel, responded to this review
Thank you for your feed back. Again, we know there are a few rooms that need addressing, and as explained in other reviews, the owner of the business has been made fully aware and hopes to have a full refurbishment in place at the beginning of next year. We do have many great rooms, fantastic food and friendly, professional staff, which I hope still goes towards making the George a lovely place to stay.

"Absolutely dreadful"

1
15/08/2016

What a disgusting hotel!! The entire place smelt of urine and mould. The bedrooms were not in a good condition with bizarre stains on the walls and floor. The quality of the water pressure was appalling and very little water dribbled out of the dirty shower head. Front of house staff did not seem to care when raising the issue of the shower and just said "yeah, we've told our manager, not much we can do!" Dreadful hotel.

186342Jules, Manager at BEST WESTERN George Hotel, responded to this review
Im so sorry we did not meet your expectations. We do have issues with the water pressure in a few rooms and we are still waiting for this to be resolved. I'm afraid it is not an easy fix as the building is very old and a complete new system has to be installed which we are hoping will be started at the beginning of next year. We do our very best to look after our customers and do everything possible to ensure they have a good stay, so again, I do apologise your stay was unsatisfactory.

"Not the best Western at all"

1
02/08/2016

We don't normally stay at best western hotels as I have heard there not the best at all so I have always avoided them . However on this occasion we did not have any option. Well all the bad things I have heard were well founded, the best thing about this place was the fantastic car park, beautifully presented clean nice fencing a few shrubs ,excellent and that's where the whole thing stops from the reception on wards it's a disaster. The staff were pleasant enough but the place is tired the furniture hardly matches anything the carpets were worn colour faded with wear and dusty and musty smelling. The room was full of dust and marks on the wall, the bathroom tiles were dirty the grouting was black in places and the notice from people standing outside our room was arwful. We asked to be moved and the receptionist told us ok because she had already had complaints about a large group staying there and the noise aNd she said trying to keep them under control was not easy and she had ,had a bad day. Well our next room was extremely dusty, marks on walls the black out blind was all freed around t he edges and would only go up half way as a knot had been tied in it . Upon waking in the morning I had what looked like red bite/blotches on my legs and arms mmmmmmm ? Any way I am going to complain to the best western hotels and show them the photos as I was completely disgusted. I would never stay here again or at any other best western.

186342Jules, Manager at BEST WESTERN George Hotel, responded to this review
I am so sorry to hear you had such a disappointing stay at the hotel. We know there are certain areas such as carpets and furniture that are in need of updating and we will pass your comments on to the owner and lease holder of the property to ensure the improvements are made as soon as possible. Thank you for your feedback and again my sincere apologies.

"Noisy the weekend I stayed"

3
25/07/2016

I stayed at the Hotel for a local wedding with my family in 2015. Its facilities were about average for the standard of Hotel, the staff were pleasant and the food was reasonable in quality and price. My room was a little woebegone, but comfortable enough. Unfortunately the hotel had booked a wedding party into one part of the Hotel and the loud music went on to the early hours depriving everyone of sleep. I complained to the company's customer relation department, and was impressed by their offer of three free rooms if booked during that year, as my wife makes frequent trips to Norwich to take her wheelchair bound brother to his hospital appointments. However, I was less impressed when each time I tried to book a room for her at the Hotel, they were fully booked. In the end I gave up trying.

"Definitely not 'Best' western"

1
18/07/2016

How disappointing. The whole place smelt very badly, musty and stale. The corridor smelt as bad as the rooms. Single beds were very small. I had to lie diagonally in bed just so I could straighten my legs (and I am only 6 foot). Our shower had virtually no power at all. Our friends room was the same but with only cold water. No hot shower! None of us will ever consider staying there again. Not a good advert for Best Western!

186342Jules, Manager at BEST WESTERN George Hotel, responded to this review
Thank you for your review and sincere apologies you found the rooms a musty odour. I have already spoken to the head housekeeper to ensure this is resolved asap. Some rooms are quite small and the shower pressure is an issue which we hope to resolve with the full refurbishment next year. In the meantime we are fitting power shower heads for the affected rooms for a more immediate resolution. So sorry you did not enjoy your experience with us.If there is anything i can assist you with further, please contact me direct.

"Another Western....but not on TV.....but bit dated..."

14/07/2016

Best Western is MY Favourite BRAND.....My beloved Brook (BW) was full...(2nd fav also full).and the Brook is MY all time fav..... But I like BW....and The George did surprise me....I have driven past what I had wrongly thought was the hotel. The sign being on corner of busy road near center of Norwich....The George is a little way from the road.... and provided quite accommodation. A gravel car park made me think car movement would disturb me as my room was in the cottage suites...a building just across car park from main building....but it was fine. My room 202 I feel was a little small with bed needing most of the space....dated furniture and few power sockets behind old dressing table/desk unit. One other socket behind a chair was easier to use...so unplugged kettle to use with my pc. Bathroom smelt of paint...and looked as if it had just been refitted. Smell went with window open for evening. Had a meal in bar....then breakfast in restaurant next morning...both ok. Wi-Fi worked fine. Note to Sarah Mercure.....The George has biscuits :)))))))))))))))) Work had only asked me the afternoon of day before if I could cover duties in Norwich...so Norwich has of late been very busy....The Brook and My second fav hotel were full. But The George turned out to be better than I thought. Needs update...but as I wrote...bathroom had paint smell and looked as if it had just been updated....so hotel working on the rooms. ONE bad thing....my room faced sun rise...and with only venetian blind it allowed sun to light up the room from around 4am......NOT WHAT I WANTED. Please fit proper curtains....black out ones even better

186342Jules, Manager at BEST WESTERN George Hotel, responded to this review
Thank you for your feedback, and we are pleased you enjoyed your stay.We are in the process of updating all the rooms and also plan for full refurbishment in the new year.I will certainly look at putting in new black out curtains asap. Really hope we can now become one of your favourite BW's.

"Rather tired"

2
13/07/2016

Alas, this hotel is typical of many under the Best Western banner - old fashioned, rather tired and more expensive than local comparative competition. The bath and shower were particularly poor, there barely being enough pressure to wash the shampoo out of my far from think hair using the old shower attachment. The hotel bar was closed at a little after 11 pm and myself and my colleague got a rather curt response when we enquired politely whether we could be served, again at odds with much of the local competition who are happy to serve (well behaved) guests into the wee hours. I doubt very much I will be paying a return visit.

186342Jules, Manager at BEST WESTERN George Hotel, responded to this review
Sorry to hear you had a poor experience at The George. Please be assured a full refurbishment of the hotel is on its way soon which everyone is really looking forward to. I'm genuinely surprised to hear you had a less than satisfactory response on your requests for drinks after 11pm, staff are usually very attentive and friendly here so i will certainly investigate this for you. Thank you for your feedback.

"Great place for a quiet city break in Norwich"

5
11/07/2016

Norwich is a lovely place for a city break, plenty of shopping , nearby is the Norfolk Broads and the coast. this hotel is just of a main road so easy to find but very quiet at night with no traffic noise. The staff are very good and the food in the restaurant is high quality.

186342Jules, Manager at BEST WESTERN George Hotel, responded to this review
Thank you very much for your great review. We are delighted you enjoyed your stay and look forward to welcoming you back again in the near future.

"Good location"

09/07/2016

We stayed at this hotel for 2 nights before going onto our week break in Hunstanton. We booked a double room through booking.com and was suprised to be given a suite in the eaves (appeared to have the entire top floor). The room and bed were huge with also a very large bathroom with jacuzzi bath and seperate shower. The only downside was areas of the room hadnt been dusted for some time (glass bedside lamps as an example) the staff were friendly and polite. Good choice of breakfast which was very tasty. This hotel us situated within a 20 mins stroll to centre of the town which has a vast assortment of shops and restaurants.

186342Jules, Manager at BEST WESTERN George Hotel, responded to this review
Thank you very much for your review. We are pleased you were happy with your stay and will take note of the cleaning issues you mentioned. Again thank you for your kind comments regarding the food and staff, your custom is much appreciated.

"the 3.5 review is about right"

07/07/2016

Great location, parking good, bar good, a normal cheap hotel, I would think great for a group, just a little grubby particularly hall carpets. We had a very large room massive bed but friends ended up with a very small bed.

186342Jules, Manager at BEST WESTERN George Hotel, responded to this review
Thank you for your review. We are glad you were pleased with most of the hotels attributes. Being an old Victorian building all rooms are different shapes and sizes and hopefully next year a full refurbishment will be in place enhancing the property even more.

"Very enjoyable stay at the George Hotel"

4
05/07/2016

I recently led a group of 40+ senior people to stay here for 5 nights. All the staff are excellent - friendly and efficient. The food is equally good, both dinner and breakfast. The hotel is well located for visiting the area and has good parking facilities. However, the hotel is a little "tired" and some first floor rooms had quite low water pressure. I understand that some renovation will be carried our next year.

186342Jules, Manager at BEST WESTERN George Hotel, responded to this review
Thank you very much for your review. We are really pleased you and your group enjoyed their stay and that you enjoyed both the food and friendly service. As you mentioned,we are fully aware of the need of refurbishment in some rooms and are working with the owner of the hotel to get these issues addressed as soon as we can in the coming year. Thank you once again and we hope to see you all again in the future.

"Quiet, friendly small hotel"

4
02/07/2016

It's not the lap of luxury, but it's a friendly, cosy, small hotel in a decent quiet location. I'm not sure what people are expecting when they stay and leave a bad review. It's not beautiful, but it is clean and comfortable. Best bonus was that the windows actually open, which is not usual for hotels these days. Shower is a bit rubbish though.

"Weekend Stay"

27/06/2016

This hotel is in a very good location, within walking distance of Norwich town centre . The staff are friendly, helpful and polite. The rooms vary in size and furniture so best to ask if you have particular requirements. Breakfast was good with plenty of choice.

"Poor Hotel"

2
26/06/2016

Could not get into our usual hotel so went with this as the reviews were OK and fairly near to town. Accommodation was a side building and it reminded me of an emergency spare room in your mates house. Mattress smaller than frame, old furniture. Bathroom had just been renovated though. Next day found that they had dumped the old bathroom against the side of the building, including the old toilet! Why did I look there you may ask? Well during the night there was a thunderstorm and was kept awake by the sound of gushing water by the window - the one with the mis-matching curtains. Anyway in the morning, tired and a little irritable checked it out and found that the drainpipe was dis-connected to the guttering. Breakfast was fine, and although we did not use the restaurant look decent. Will not be going back there.

186342Jules, Manager at BEST WESTERN George Hotel, responded to this review
Thank you for your feedback. Sorry to hear the thunder storm and gushing water kept you awake. We have just renovated the bathroom and yes we are awaiting the debris from the old bathroom suite to be picked up this week, that is the reason it was discreetly hidden behind the wall. We are pleased you enjoyed your breakfast. We wish you well staying at other hotels in the future.

"Decent hotel with great staff"

22/06/2016

I have been staying here for the past few months whilst working away on business. Great staff, comfortable rooms, and good service. The ‘Arlington Grill' restaurant do lovely steaks, and the bar food is always excellent, with frequent weekly specials. The hotel is about a 15 minute walk into the middle of Norwich town, give or take 5 minutes depending on your pace. All rooms have en-suite bath & shower, tea/coffee making facilities, and a TV with access to many Free-to-air TV channels. There is also a large TV in the bar area so you can still get to see your favourite TV programme whilst settling down for something to eat or enjoying a good ale/beer/cider. As long as the other guests agree of course! It's always the staff that do it for me though, and you can't beat great customer service. From Hannah on reception, Judith in the restaurant to the people behind the scenes that make everything tick. Too many people to mention really. However….. if you happen to meet the very helpful and friendly Duty Manager Will (Davison) you won't be disappointed. Just a nice all round fella, who will go out of his way to ensure you get the best service possible. From knowing what your favourite tipple is when you walk in the bar to giving advice on things to do and see in Norwich. I can't commend him enough. Just an example… my room key broke in the door lock whilst I was trying to gain entry, which then resulted in me being ‘locked out' of my room. I reported the issue to reception, and Will being the Duty Manager at the time, followed procedures and reported the incident to Hotel Management. But then took it upon himself to ask other residents around the bar/restaurant area if anyone could help resolve the problem. There was talk of calling in a Locksmith at one point. Whilst I waited in the bar area for any resolution, Will appeared with the said broken key bit and a pair of pliers. He had managed to fix the problem himself. Talk about thinking on your feet. Needless to say he had exceeded my expectations, and I was again able to gain entry to my hotel room with a spare key. Well done Will, awesome service.

186342Jules, Manager at BEST WESTERN George Hotel, responded to this review
Thank you very much indeed for your great review. We are really pleased you are enjoying your stay with us and I will certainly ensure all the staff mentioned are recognised for their great service. It is so nice to hear praise when we all try so hard to do our very best to ensure our 'not so fashionable hotel', still provides good old fashioned friendly service.

"A very average hotel."

3
21/06/2016

Although this hotel is reasonable value for money, provides all the facility you would expect from this standard of establishment it is very tired and projects a uninviting ambience. The food at breakfast and the evening meals are of good standard but the restaurant layout, furnishings and décor are dull and not conducive to ensure an enjoyable dining experience. The bar area reminded me of a village hall on a wet and cold winters evening. The staff are willing and helpful be are mainly young and under training. Bedroom and bathroom clean but very dated and small with poor sound insulation between rooms. The hotel is about 20 minutes walking distance from the city centre.

186342Jules, Manager at BEST WESTERN George Hotel, responded to this review
Thank you for your review and feedback. We are pleased you found us of reasonable value and enjoyed your meal in the restaurant .We are training some younger staff at the moment and again are trying to refurbish all areas of the hotel as and when possible.

"tired and noisy"

20/06/2016

hotel is in good location to city .easy to take taxi. problem was noise in the forcourt banging car doors. decor tired and had problem with water pressure from shower .bar was comfortable .lounge reasonable but hallways to bedrooms very dreary and tired carpets

Thank you for your feedback. Sorry to hear that car doors were being banged shut. I can assure you that the tired decor and furnishings will all be addressed in the ongoing refurbishment of the hotel.

"My stay a the George in Norwich"

2
08/06/2016

Bar and Dining room were fine but bedrooms in definite need of refurbishment, the bulbs in the lights were of such a low wattage could hardly see. The bathroom tatty, no extractor fan in the windowless bathroom or grab rail for the getting out of the bath. Car park small but could accommodate a lot more cars if spaces were marked out. Further away from city centre than I expected, had an evening first night which was delicious although not cheap. Hotel busy took ages to serve coffee at breakfast - would be better with self service for beverages and shortage of food until staff had enough time to fill up dishes.

186342Jules, Manager at BEST WESTERN George Hotel, responded to this review
Thank you for your feed back and i'm so sorry you felt the hotel did not meet with your expectations. We are awaiting a full refurbishment of the hotel and we are also redecorating and replacing bathrooms whilst we wait for this to happen. We hope you will come and stay with us again in a refurbished room so you can experience all the great things the George has to offer.

"Double check your booking before you arrive!"

2
07/06/2016

Booked 2 double rooms here in October 2015 through Best Western Family and Friends for the 4th June 2016, rang the week prior to pay for these rooms to save us doing it on check-in as we were attending a concert in the area and wanted to quickly check in and get on our way.........my rooms had been cancelled by the hotel and apparently they had sent me an email 3 weeks prior to tell me this (no email received and no-one had called me to check I had received email) I was then given a story about there apparently being a burst pipe and they had to close the section of the hotel that our rooms were booked in for....no manager was also available for me to speak to and I was to wait for someone to call me back within the hour........it took 3 hours for someone to call me back! I ended up having to call nearly every hotel and guest house in Norwich trying to get 2 rooms for the night we required them and everywhere was fully booked, the George then offered me two single rooms and a room at another Best Western which would be at a significantly higher rate, I decided as I had no other choice I would have to take this option. I then rang the other hotel and paid for the other room, then 3 days before we are due to arrive at both hotels, I receive an email from the manager of the George, the other Best Western had overbooked and could no longer accommodate that room and had refunded our card with the money paid, but they had found me a room at BnB a 30 minute drive away! No other choice but to take this option as it was the only one offered to me.... After all of this I really didn't want to stay at the George but thought it's only 1 night, well I wish I had slept in my car! The smell as you entered is like an old peoples home, the furniture dates back from 1970, the "single" room was more like a cupboard, the bed I wouldn't even say was a single bed, the quilt barely covered me (understandable if I was above the average size, I'm a 12) the shower needed a good clean, one of the plug sockets didn't work and I think I got around 2 hours sleep due to the floorboards creaking above me..... The only good thing I have to say about this hotel is the cooked breakfast was lovely as was the lady who served it, the general manager could pick up some customer service tips from her!

"A convenient stay"

3
07/06/2016

We stayed overnight at this hotel for a concert event at the football club. It was very convenient to the city centre but parking was very limited at the hotel on arrival. However the staff kindly rearranged their vehicles top let us park which was great. The room was small but has all the essentials, including kettle and free wifi. The shower switch did not work properly and the bathroom was also rather small. The decor of the room is due for a refreshment. For the price we paid we were expecting a little bit more :(

"overnight stay"

06/06/2016

Good location within walking distance of the city so could leave the car at the hotel, hotel rooms could do with updating as the shower was rubbish and carpet quite tatty looking. However bed was comfortable .

"Weekend at the George/Norwich"

04/06/2016

Attractive on the outside. Not much going for it on the inside. The double room was small. The walls were paper thin. You could hear every bathroom movement from next door. Furnishing of the room was basic. Nothing to write home about.

"One of the best night stay"

27/05/2016

Stayed only the one night would not hesitate to go back the food was fantastic the saff were helpfull very friendly a clean room comfortable bed the bar decor area could do with an updated but overall I would recommend this hotel

"Room"

2
27/05/2016

The quality of the room was poor with a not very nice smell, it was clean but had a horrible odour. Unfortunately sleeping was difficult with the snoring from other guests. cant fault the location near the centre of the city

"Good for a one night stay"

3
26/05/2016

Stopped here for a night, and it did the job. The staff were friendly and polite and the room (Room 12) was clean and tidy. The issues I had: 1) Parking can be a bit of a nightmare at this hotel, 2) The breakfast here is way overpriced at £11, I didn't even bother having it here as that is a mad price. 3) The walls are thin i could here the TV from the next room.

"Wish I had booked the Premier Inn"

2
26/05/2016

Car park full on arrival. Informed that I could just block people in. Declined the offer & parked on a tight side street, praying that my wing mirrors were not dislocated from my ride. As I lay awake in my child size bed at 6am the next morning, wrestling with my miniature duvet which had a mind of its own, I could hear people crunching on the car park stones making an early morning getaway. Gazing around at the early light catching the 1970`s decor I felt glad to be alive & smug that I had avoided a verbal altercation with another bleary eyed guest. Decided to wash away an uncomfortable nights sleep with a nice power shower, to be disappointed by a trickle whilst being attacked by the shower door. was curious to see whether the hotel had trapped previous dwarf guests & had them working hard with child size watering cans. The 3 star AA rating was either gained in 1971 or given by an assessor who was taking his first forages in to the world of legal highs. Should have booked a Premier Inn.

currently staying in room 114 (single room) booked last minute and arrived at midnight. the Night Manager was very friendly and checked me in quickly so I could go and relax. room is exactly as expected and nothing like the nonsense reviews I have seen on here. for a historic building the fixtures and fittings in this room are as good as can be expected! I am now down here pretty much every week if not fortnight for the foreseeable and will be using this hotel as my base rest assured!

"A little disappointing and everything creaks!"

3
22/05/2016

Part of the Best Western brand this hotel is set in an up market, quiet suburb and is a 10 -15 minute walk from the city centre so it's in a great location. But given what you might expect it is a little disappointing. The rooms are well equipped with decent sized bathrooms, comfy towels and complimentary shampoos etc, but despite it being a warm day the central heating was on. The bed was not particularly comfortable and, being an old hotel, every floorboard and door seems to creak and the walls are quite thin which makes it impossible to sleep during the day (particularly if you have been put next to a service room). Staff are helpful and friendly, food is good but quite expensive. Breakfast at £11 is a rip off. The car park is often over crowded in the evenings and I was encouraged to either double-park or try to find a space in the road outside. It is fine, it is safe, clean and ( just about) comfortable but for such a good brand in such a good location I had hoped for better

"Would stick to Premier Inn next time"

3
17/05/2016

Rather disappointed. Not a cheap hotel & breakfast is expensive. The room was rather stuffy & as it was on the ground floor we were unable to leave the window open. The shower was very poor too. The room however was clean & & tidy with free tea & coffee. Location is quite nice, although being a residential area it's a little noisy on a Sunday morning. Next time I think I'd go back to the premier inn in the city centre

186342Jules, Manager at BEST WESTERN George Hotel, responded to this review
Thank you for your comments. I'm sure Premier Inn will be happy to have your business.

"Great service"

12/05/2016

We had a fantastic meal at lunchtime yesterday and the service was excellent. We were served by two waitresses Judith and Shelby who couldn't do enough for us. They were professional, polite, went out of their way to please us and meet all our requests. We would definitely go back again especially if Judith and Shelby were the waitresses. The meals we had in our large group of people were also really lovely.

186342Jules, Manager at BEST WESTERN George Hotel, responded to this review
Thank you very much for your review. We are really pleased you had an enjoyable time and will certainly pass your great comments on to Shelby and Judith.

"Will try to find a better place"

3
11/05/2016

Staff were friendly and nice, not problem with this at all, but by the time we opened the door of the room they gave us, a nasty smell came off to our noses,so we opened the windows and the smell disappeared. The toilet was very big and clean, but at some point of the evening, I dropped my phone off and when I get down to pick it up I found underneath the bed an unimaginable amount of dust that made me think that they only were cleaning superficially... That was very disgusting. I'm not expecting to be in luxury room, but the cleanness, for me, is very essential in every area, corner, place of the room that I'm paying for. We also had a little problem with the shower and is that the water coming out didn't have force enough so we need to take showers of at least 30 minutes time. For the rest it was fine for us like the location, the style and staff.

186342Jules, Manager at BEST WESTERN George Hotel, responded to this review
Thank you for your feedback, all comments help us improve our service for you and future guests.

"Vow Renewal 'bit of a do' - wow"

5
11/05/2016

Had our original reception at the George 10 years ago and so decided to return to have a celebration anniversary/vow renewal party. We were wonderfully looked after as always. The room looked lovely, the food was scrumptious and hot and we had a lovely time. We stayed overnight in the Garden Suite, as we did the first time and had a very comfortable stay. Breakfast the following morning was very good and kept us going all day. As ever we were very well looked after and will definitely return. Thanks Julie and the team.

It was our pleasure to host your wonderful celebration, and thank you very much for all your kind comments.

"Memorable for all the right reasons"

09/05/2016

I just had a party to celebrate with friends and family my dad's 70th birthday. The food was delicious, exquisite in fact. We organised a 3 course menu with choices for our 26 guests to select and we were delighted with the results. From the very start, Julie the manager and Jane the COnference and Banqueting Manager were so helpful. Nothing was too much trouble. The chef was so patient with our fussy guests with dietary needs, he was really accommodating. The table was so beautifully dressed for a party, they even allowed us to bring our own decorations to add to the ambience. The service, the setting the staff, all was faultless and we cannot recommend it highly enough. We are mostly Norwich born and bred as well as having invited guests from all around the country, equally they all had a great time and loved the party and food. I would say the food was at a high end brasserie level, this restaurant is a hidden gem in Norwich. It has a car park and perfect to meet with family and friends. From the time I arrived till the time I left in the morning I was made to feel welcome by all the friendly staff. The room was spotlessly clean and newly decorated and the food in the grill was well cooked and tasty. I will certainly use this hotel again if I have to stay in the area, and would have no hesitation in recommending it to friends

I uploaded lots of photos of my not great room as I have so much work to do I didn't bother complaining so maybe they would have put me in a better room if one exists but number 1 the wardrobe was something growing in it so best not to put my clothes in there. Also lots of damp as the photos show I am sitting in the restaurant at the moment beer is good and I will post a photo of the meal. I don't think I will frequent this hotel again it needs lots of TLC it's old and ran down such a shame.

Thank you for your feedback. We will certainly look into the issues you raised and do our very best to resolve them as soon as possible. It is a shame you did not let us know of any problems whilst you were staying as we certainly would have done everything we could to resolve them immediately.

Efficient, friendly staff, pleasing room, lovely bathroom, great breakfast. There is a bar/restaurant which looked like a good independent pub, though we did not have an opportunity to eat or drink there apart from at breakfast. Ample parking, handy for the city. Would be happy to recommend it for business or pleasure/

"The best western, George Hotel - terrible"

18/04/2016

The hotel and rooms were dirty, had bags of dirty linen in the corridors, surplus furniture stacked in the corridors. broken tiles in the bathrooms and broken bath panels. Some bedrooms were very small, dark and dingy. All areas needed cleaning/hovering. Well below average for what you expect from a best western.

I am actually astounded TripAdvisor allowed you to comment on our hotel when you didn't even stay with us. I don't think any further comment is necessary .

"On bus route to Norfolk & Norwich Hospital "

16/04/2016

Stayed here for 4 weeks on & off in various single rooms whilst my husband was in the NNUH. This is an old building, so there are narrow corridors & creaky floorboards as would be expected. All the rooms I stayed in had different layouts but were clean & the beds were all comfortable. The only tip I would give is that the ground floor rooms have better water pressure in the shower. This hotel is only 10 min walk from the city centre & as I said in the title it is on a frequent bus route to the hospital. I didn't eat in the hotel, so can't comment on this, but all the reception staff I had contact with were very friendly & made me feel welcome. Will definitely stay here again if I visit Norwich, although hopefully it won't be because someone is in the hospital!

"Perfectly good, but nothing special "

10/04/2016

My son & I stayed for 2 nights, the room was ok with a double & single bed with a decent size bathroom & nice fluffy towels, however the general decor was tired & the rooms smelt musty. The shower was very weak in the bathroom (room No. 132) & it took forever to rinse my hair! We didn't have breakfast at the hotel & the only contact with staff was at check in & check out, where they were perfectly nice.

186342Jules, Manager at BEST WESTERN George Hotel, responded to this review
Thank you for your feedback. Please be assured we are working hard on refreshing the decor and hope we can welcome you back again in the future.

The staff were helpful and the bed was extremely comfortable but the room was a little lacking. They could do with a lick of paint and a few minor things but was okay overall. The restaurant was excellent on the plus side!

I stayed here on business, and I can safely say that I will be using this hotel again for any future visits. There might be quite a few stairs around in the building, but this is to be expected of a lovely old building like this.

03/04/2016

I stayed at the hotel for one night while on business. The room was unfortunately a twin rather than a double which I had requested. The trouble is the single bed was very single, turning over in the night was definitely a challenge. The small duvet fell off when I turned anyway, so not the best night's sleep. A couple of other minor problems were that the curtains did not fit the window, so at first light it was like being in the glare of a pair of car headlights (yes a sunny day in Norfolk), and my waste bin had not been emptied from the night before. I decided to go out to eat so cannot comment on dinner. Breakfast was reasonable. There was a good choice of items to be had and the service was friendly. So, not bad, but not brilliant either.

I stayed here for two nights, the rooms may be a little tired but they were spotless the food in the restaurant was simply brilliant. The mussels were amazing and the sea trout cooked perfectly. The shining stars of this hotel are Will, Tom and Judith they made staying away from home not so bad, the service was excellent and a welcome l would challenge anyone to find better. Thanks guys we may see you again if we are your way.

Had a great stay in the hotel, I've written this review to complement the staff, to a person they were fantastic. Thank you. Breakfast excellent and cooked fresh, good choice. Restaurant in the evening was great value and the food was lovely well worth a try. Room was tired but quiet and acceptable but could do with a refresh. Overall great and another thank you to the staff for making me feel valued you can be proud of your team. Paul and Janie Grantham

"Great location. Tired Hotel"

3
29/03/2016

Friendly helpful staff from the moment we walked in the door of what could be a lovely looking hotel. Unfortunately it is showing it's age now and some of the rooms don't quite meet the high expectations that Best Western have set themselves in other hotels. Positives were the beds were extremely comfortable, great staff and the location. Only a 10 minute walk to the centre of Norwich. Negatives: Tired dated rooms. Poor showers.

"Exactly as described"

13/03/2016

Perfect for me! Being a professional musician on tour, I needed a ground floor room and parking for full size concert harp. This was booked very easily and the harp was safe as it was inside overnight. Staff were really friendly and my room was clean and warm. The food was excellent. I will certainly have no hesitation coming here again.

"Lovely stay. "

05/03/2016

I had a lovely overnight stay at this hotel, it was good value for money, clean and most of the staff were incredibly helpful. The only thing that slightly overshadowed my stay was a member of the night staff being particularly unhelpful. I came back to the hotel and asked if I was able to purchase a Diet Coke to take up to my room. I then asked how much this would be. I was told by this member of staff that he didn't have a password for the till and so he couldn't tell me the price. When I asked if there was anybody around who did have the till password, I was given a straightforward no and decided to leave it and head to bed. Aside from this, I had a really nice stay - the hotel is located close to the city centre and transport links are great. The hotel provided free wifi and a parking space which were incredibly useful.

"Outstanding Stay"

26/02/2016

Excellent room, first class service, handy parking, great location within easy walking distance of city centre, attentive staff, good wifi. While we didn't use the restaurant on this trip, it looked tempting and we will on our next visit. All in all, highly recommended for business or pleasure.

"It's a bed. Not a holiday"

3
09/02/2016

It's a reasonable place to spend a night for the price. The rooms are very dated and you only want to sleep in it. But the bar and food is good and it's a decent location to the city. Overall not bad but not amazing either. Staff were friendly though.

"Great to see investment....."

4
05/02/2016

The staff here remain marvellous. The reality is that over the past year or so the hotel has been looking increasingly tired. For this latest stay it was really really encouraging to see that a programme of investment and moving forward is underway. My room had nice new carpet, fresh paint, refurbished shower. Perhaps long overdue and not sure how long the programme will take to complete but really great to see. This stay was thus even more enjoyable than usual.

31/01/2016

Arrived Friday evening for a two night stay. Ample parking space and friendly welcome at reception. Efficient booking in procedure and we were asked if we needed any help with luggage. Bedroom was small and very tired but warm and clean. Bathroom was also warm and clean but mouldy above the shower. Bar and brasserie area downstairs was warm and comfortable and staff were friendly and helpful. Delicious and freshly cooked evening meals both nights. Lovely breakfast, I had kippers but my husband was a bit disappointed with his supermarket sausage but the rest of his full English was well cooked and very tasty.

Bedrooms are small, walls are paper think.. You can hear all footsteps on the corridor. The evening meal was superb and staff where friendly. Nice and cheap but you can tell. If you stay on the bottom floor you can hear all movement upstairs. Overall good if you need a bed but there are better hotels around

22/12/2015

This place is OK. Very basic in everything. Welcome was OK, room was OK, rather small and a long walk along squeaky corridors, could do with a bit of a facelift. Wasn't very good value at £85 room only. Had to wait quite a long time to be let in at midnight on a cold night. But apart from minor niggles it was OK!

20/12/2015

We did 3 tours to this hotel during November with a full coach for each visit. Obviously with such a large group, needs of the few become more apparent and the hotel did their very best to swap and change to meet the passengers needs. Staff are immensely friendly and the food was enjoyed by all. The location is ideal as it's just a 10 minute walk to the city centre but just far away to be remain peaceful, look forward to next year

"In dire need of a facelift"

18/12/2015

Stayed at this hotel for one night in October for a class reunion. Cannot fault the check in staff, they were friendly, professional and on hand to help with directions. The room I had, room 124 was dated, I had a small window that looked out onto a brick wall and a window into another building. The furniture was from at the latest the 60's! I can put up with that if the room is clean, the bed is comfortable and and shower is good. I can tick off the first 2 but the shower was absolutely appalling, the shower hose itself had the metal coming off and to say it was a dribble would be my being generous! I had driven a long way and wanted a good night sleep before driving home. About 7 am there was a cacophony of voices from underneath my room. All I can think that they had a coach load of people for breakfast! It was SO bad that I just got up, didn't have a shower, funnily enough and left. As I was checking out the young receptionist took my card and said 'that'll be £90 please' I told her that I had booked it for £60 and confirmed it on my booking so I paid £60. Afterwards she said that it was going up to £90 a night! I was gobsmacked! £60 was, in my opinion for room only, way too pricey. I would NOT stay here again!!

186342Jules, Manager at BEST WESTERN George Hotel, responded to this review
Thank you for your feed back. We know that some parts of hotel are in need of refurbishment which we are speaking to the owner of the business about and hope to progress with as time and money allows. In the meantime we will do the best we can to make the necessary standard improvements we can.

"I feel loved"

16/12/2015

As a regular at this hotel - one night every week - I am always impressed by the welcome I receive. The hotel has an ecclectic variety of rooms, and the staff know which rooms I prefer and do their best to make this happen. My routine is such that the night porter knows I enjoy reading the Eastern Daily Press with breakfast, and lo and behold he tends to be outside the dining room with it poised and ready for my perusal. In essence the staff make me feel loved. I recognise that the hotel is slightly quirky, but I for one always look forward to staying there.

My husband and I went to The George Hotel to have dinner for our 20th wedding anniversary. The food was amazing (some of the best cod I've ever had) and the service was quick and the staff were so friendly. The hotel has such a warmth to it and we will both definitely be coming back here! Thank you all for such a pleasant experience.

"Warm friendly town house hotel close to city centre"

14/12/2015

Another coach full of guests going to Thursford stayed at this delightful hotel. Yes it is olde worlde with corridors and a few stairs( no lift but read the description first) . Meals served quickly and efficiently as we had a tight time schedule for Thursford.. Rooms adequate for short stay with usual BW toiletries and plenty of towels. We had a variety of room types, one heater was u/s but quickly replaced, our loft room 211 was enormous, occupying the roof space with large bathroom including Jacuzzi. The stairs to the room were steep and narrow so not suitable for many, and there was a colony of ladybirds in the bathroom window! All round a satisfactory visit which we will repeat next year.

"lovely, cozy place to stay"

13/12/2015

This was my second stay in the hotel as my family has an annual get together in Norwich a couple of weeks before Christmas. The year before last, my brother and his partner couldn't get a room at our normal budget chain hotel and he ended up picking The George Hotel simply due to the location and the fact that they had parking. They were given a room in the cottage and were initially a bit dubious about being outside the main hotel. They ended up really loving their stay and encouraged us all to stay there together the following year. There are four double rooms in the cottage and we booked them all so we could be together. We loved our stay last year so came back again this year. There is a fair amount of parking which is free and this close to the city centre, that's not always the case. We've all always been able to park however the car park can get busy and this year there were coaches coming and going and they took up a fair bit of room. You check in in the main building and the staff are very polite, cheery and helpful. Last year I accidentally managed to lock myself out when I went to the room of one of our party and it was about 9 at night, very dark and freezing out and I felt so guilty when I had to call reception but a lovely girl ran straight over, tried not to laugh at me in my pyjamas, and let me back in. She must have been so cold as she didn't have a coat on, she couldn't have had time as she came right out, and she seemed more that happy to help. She wasn't at all put out and we both laughed about it. The rooms are all doubles with very decent sized bathrooms. The beds are lovely and comfortable and if you get cold there are spare blankets in the wardrobe. The bed is nice and soft but very supportive and I've always had a lovely nights sleep. There is bed side cabinet either side of the bed and a large desk with a TV and a well stocked hospitality tray on, so there are plenty of places to put your things. There is a good size wardrobe with hangers provided and room to put your suitcase or bag in the bottom if you want to get it out of the way. There are lamps either side of the bed within easy reach of the bed and there are enough plug sockets for a phone charger, hair dryer (one is provided but it looks a bit ancient) etc. The blind at the window is really good and keeps out most of the day light. There are complimentary toiletries in the bathroom and you're supplied with several towels to use. The whole place is very, very clean and cozy. The rooms are more than large enough for two people. The food in the restaurant is very good. The dinner menu isn't exactly cheap but it is very good quality and tasty and you do get large portions. Drinks with the meal were a tad dear. The breakfast is very good. It is £11.50 and we had a good quality full english, tons and tons of toast and as much as you can manage from the cold selections (yoghurts, fruit, cereals, pastries, meat and cheese). The sausages in the breakfast were good quality and cooked really well. The scrambled egg portion was a tad on the small size but you can always fill up on something else. Two of our party just wanted toast and asked how much that would cost as that was all they wanted and they weren't charged at all. This year one of the rooms had a broken wall heater in the bathroom and since it was a pretty cold and wet weekend, this was a bit of an issue. We went over to the reception and they said they'd send someone over to fix it but in the mean time they gave us a portable heater. We were a little concerned as we'd rather not have had plugs in the bathroom but it was cold and we needed to warm the place up. When we got back to the room we found that when we pluged the heater into the closest plug socket to the bathroom, the heater couldn't reach the bathroom. We informed the reception who then gave us the longest extension cord on the planet :-) No one came to fix the wall heater but we had the portable fire so it was comfortable however when we returned to the room the following day after going out, the extension cord had been taken away. We went to the reception again and told them that no one had fixed the wall heater and now the extension cord had been removed. The lady on the reception desk was very apologetic and said she would track down another extension and would bring it over asap, which she did. By the time we checked out the heater still wasn't working. The only other issue that any of us had this year was the water pressure in the showers. No one had a problem last year but this year, all of the showers were just trickling water. We weren't expecting a jet wash ;-) but this was quite slow. I suppose that the decor is a tad dated and some of the furnishings are showing a little wear and tare. There is a burn stain on the carpet in one of the rooms and the bathrooms are very pink. However since it's so clean, cozy and large, the staff are lovely and the food is good, you can easily over look the little things as they don't impact on your stay. On our departure this year, we booked all the rooms in the cottage for the same time in December 2016! We enjoy this place enough to keep going back so I'd definitley recommend this hotel to anyone.

"Food the only good thing about it"

13/12/2015

This was our second visit to this Hotel a year on from the 1st. We stayed as part of a coach visit to the Thursford Christmas Show. On arrival the rooms were not ready and we were made to wait in the bar not enough seats many senior citizens in the party so not a good start. finally given key to room no lifts to any floor quite a small room for a double although the sheets on the bed were clean the coloured fabric strip along the bottom was filthy. the Bathroom door couldn't be shut or you wouldn't have been able to get out. No beakers for toothbrushes etc in the Bathroom. Radiator was cold and dispite turning it up was still cold at 11pm finally got it to work then it only worked on one setting Boiling Hot couldn't turn it down Windows didn't open and were covered in mould as was the shower screen the Shower didn't work thank goodness we were able to use the bath. A meal was booked for 3pm at 3.35 the orders were taken bearing in mind we had to leave at 4.45pm it was a bit of a rush to serve 40 plus people with only 2 waiting staff the food was good but a complete copy of December 2014. We never did have coffee as no time. A very noisy hotel squeaky floorboards and unfortunately we were next to door which banged shut everytime someone went through no fun at 4am. Room door had no outside door handle so had to bang the door to make it shut. Breakfast was not bad although the Decaff tea I ordered was the most discusting I have ever tasted and undrinkable. We only stay here because the tour company make the booking and if we ever go there again with this company hope things improve. I was told in reply to my review of the hotel this time last year that they had just a few bathroom to update I think they were lying nothing had been done and to be honest things had really gone down hill. Also 1 person to run bar ! Wouldn't recommend this place and can only hope the tour company find somewhere else to stay next year, 1 night was more than enough. Avoid room138 like the Plaque.

ArlingtonNorwich, Manager at BEST WESTERN George Hotel, responded to this review
As the manager on duty that day, I know that we did everything we could to accommodate you and therefore feel it is only right I should point out the following:- The fact your coach party arrived at the hotel an hour earlier than scheduled is the sole reason you were kindly asked to wait in the bar and lounge area. If you had arrived at the agreed time you would have been able to go straight to your rooms. Never the less, we did get you to your rooms within 15 minutes of your early arrival,a full 45 minutes earlier than expected. Your afternoon meal was booked for 3.30pm not 3.00pm as you suggest, and had anyone asked us to bring your meal forward, we would have,so with respect your review is totally inaccurate and I therefore hope you can understand why I feel the need to respond in this manner.

"Don't go here!"

You'll be greeted with the smell of your nannies residential home, woken up at silly o'clock by the cleaners repeatedly slamming doors and coughing like there's no tomorrow. I left without showering, I'd have been dirtier when I got out if I had of used theirs. The toilet sounded like a harrier jump jet taking off so expect to wake your partner and half the hotel up if you go in the night. Don't waste your money.

ArlingtonNorwich, Manager at BEST WESTERN George Hotel, responded to this review
Thank you for your feed back, but having not put my nannie in a residential home I'm afraid i can not compare this. Also our Housekeepers do not start work till 8.30am weekdays and 10am weekends which it the norm for hotels, but do apologise that perhaps they may have had a cough which sadly is beyond our control.

Pleasant hotel with good staff and good service. Reasonably priced. Room was average but had all equipment. Average TV which could have done with modernising. Enormous bed which swamped a rather small room so there was little or no room to walk down one side or get out of bed without stubbing something!

"Christmas party"

07/12/2015

We have just had our work Christmas party at the George, it was a great night out, the food and service was first class and we could not fault it in any way. The waiters looked after all,of us very well all night, the food was piping hot which does not happen in a lot of paces catering for a large parties. We would highly recommend the hotel for a party night, well done the George and all the staff

"Friendly smiles greet guests throughout"

It is the friendliest hotel in Norwich, whenever guests arrive in Reception there's always a friendly greeting and this pervades throughout the hotel. Staff are always ready to go the extra mile to meet guest's requests. The chef serves up excellent dishes often using local produce.

"Not Great"

30/11/2015

Second time I had stayed at the George. The first time I was in the cottage situated outside the main hotel. This time I was in the main hotel and it was shocking. The lady that arrived before was having to change her room for an issue which I did not catch. When I went to the room I was given, I found the toilet was running constantly and the lights in the room did not work. I went back to reception and told them I was unable to stay in that room, as I would not be able to sleep with water running all night and it wasn't safe with out the lights working. They very politely changed my room, but the only room left was a twin. That was not a great problem. I was told it was the best room there. That was probably not the best thing to say......! The room presented itself very nicely. Then I went for a shower. As it was late, it was dark outside. As I started to prepare to shower I realised someone was watching me. There was a lady in a house that was overlooking the room looking back at me. The bathroom window was both unfrosted and lacking a blind/curtain. I had to go out for the evening unwashed and just have a morning shower. When I mentioned it to reception I was told they'd report it to the maintenance man. I had no confidence that anything would be done, as there is no signs of previous shading. Food was nice and the evening service was good. The breakfast service was awful. To the point it was rude. I will not be staying there ever again

ArlingtonNorwich, Manager at BEST WESTERN George Hotel, responded to this review
I am very sorry to hear of your experience regarding all the issues you experienced during your stay. We will certainly look into them immediately. Please contact the hotel direct if we can assist you further.

We had the best rooms in the place - literally. Two of my son stayed in another set of rooms on the first floor and would never go back there. Ours was the very top. Maintenance on the building is lacking. Needs to have a lot of freshing up. DON'T eat at the restaurant. Terrible service. Several locals come in regularly (which is great) but the wait staff then just spend the time talking with them and not serving anyone. For the price there are better hotels around. Too bad, this is well located.

Thank you for your feedback. I am very sorry to hear you felt the service was lacking in the restaurant. This is a very unusual comment for us regarding our staff and we will certainly investigate what went wrong on this occasion and ensure that all customers receive the great service we know we can provide. Please also be assured that we are very aware some areas of the hotel need refurbishments and plans for this are already in place.

"Surprisingly comfortable despite neg reviews"

I stayed for two nights in October when it was quite chilly out. I was greeted by a nice young receptionist who sweetly carried my suitcase up the stairs and then came to my room and turned on the radiator after I mentioned how cold it was. That evening I ate a delicious supper in the lounge downstairs which was very convenient as I didn't have to go out again. My single room was small but comfortable and my bathroom commodious, although its radiator never came on, and the corridors were cold too, but at least my room was cozy. I parked both days in the hotel car park. Overall, all staff were friendly and helpful and my stay was great (and I am a fussy customer!).

"Birthday trip for my wife."

We were put in the 'Honeymoon suite', shown to our room and offered assistance with our luggage, the last flight of stairs was a little tight, but the room was very nice, clean and warm. The bathroom again clean, if a little dated, but was perfectly good. Stayed two nights, 'Ate in' the first night and the food was great. All the staff were very helpful and looked after us very well. Location was good, we walked into Norwich city centre in about twenty minutes. Judging by our accommodation, which was very comfortable, we thought that the general decor was a little tired and the hotel was about due for a re-furb. Great location, great staff, great food, and all in all,a good experience which we would do again.

"Tired hotel"

Not a very pleasant stay, out of date décor and bedding (only had a sheet and cover) in a tired hotel, breakfast poor quality. Luckily only had to stay one night, poor quality for a Best Western hotel.

Thank you for your feed back, we always take note of all reviews and continue to make improvements where and when we can.

This hotel was clean and the rooms modern. Staff were friendly and helpful. Full english was spot on. Great value for money. Well situated for touring around Norwich. Nothing seemed too much effort for the staff on dury.

A very average hotel that hasn't quite goot things right. Reception staff were very pleasant on arrivel but on depaarture quite indifferent. The room was also musty smelling. i had a bar meal - the George burger that was excellent and the chips were really great. The member of the bar staff who served me as lovely and very helpful. He even brought my food to my room. At breakfast it was as though I had slipped in unnoticed and one member of staff in particular was very inattentive and I had to stop him clearing taables to get a pot of tea. He got it grudgingly. i wouldn't hoose to stay here again but fear I might have to because I may have to come back for business. As a best Western Diamond member i am used to better service than i received here.

Photos on best western website make this place look stunning someone is telling porky pies as this is not the case, our room 203 was cold smelt damp carpet was thread bare matress on bed sagged in middle shower didn't work bathroom on whole was not good we where shown another which was no better I wasn't staying here so I found another hotel lucky for us but the front desk where nice and helpful that's the only good thing. All the best western hotels we've stayed are 3* not this one no way.

186342Jules, Manager at BEST WESTERN George Hotel, responded to this review
For people who didn't even stay at our hotel, we are amazed how you have managed to be so scathing, dishonest and inaccurate about our lovely hotel, which we all work so very hard to ensure is a pleasant, caring and friendly place to stay, People like yourselves do not realise the damage they cause. We have reported this to trip advisor and only hope you are prevented from writing about any other hotel of which you have never stayed in again.

"Needs Updating and Staff need Training."

I booked four rooms for a one stay on Wednesday 7th October . Rooms very updated , shower didn't work, bath had hairs in it , carpet dirty in bedroom , radiator in bathroom so hot you burnt your leg on it ,don't try to get a drink from the night porter ! . All in all very disappointed I did speak to the General Manager but didn't really get any answers. The only good think we're the receptionist .. very helpful. Will not use again.

ArlingtonNorwich, Manager at BEST WESTERN George Hotel, responded to this review
I am sorry you felt you did not receive any answers. The night porter has been trained to use his discretion when serving late night drinks, and if he feels serving more drinks could cause disruption to other guests, especially due to noise he is permitted to close the bar. Of course this does not happen often and I'm sorry he felt the need to close the bar on this occasion.

"Nothing Special"

Stayed for four nights in a twin room from October 1st. Very dated bedroom and very dusty too. The bathroom was an absolute joke. The shower did not work.. The tiling was badly chipped and mouldy. To use the toilet you had to go at it sideways on it was so cramped. Beds very uncomfortable. duvets excellent. The saving grace for this hotel was the excellent staff. They really were that good. The food in the restaurant was very good value for money and the Adnams beer first class. Breakfast wasnt good value at £10.50.

"Pleasent Stay"

The hotel is situated off the main road to New Market and very convenient if you have your own transport. It's a bit far from town if you are on foot. Rooms were adequate but a bit noisy as the partitions where a bit thin. Food was good and wholesome.

ArlingtonNorwich, Manager at BEST WESTERN George Hotel, responded to this review
We are pleased you had a pleasant stay and hope you will visit us again when you are next in the area.

"I much prefer the George to a holiday inn!"

I stay one night each and every week and the staff consistently go out of their way to make my stay enjoyable. The latest example, this week, was that I had some trauma with my trusty (!) Brompton. I was able to use a private walled garden area to spend a happy half hour in the evening sun tinkering and fitting a new inner tube. A trauma turned to a joy. One wouldn't get that at a holiday inn or a travelodge!

ArlingtonNorwich, Manager at BEST WESTERN George Hotel, responded to this review
Thank you for your great review and hope the bike is work welling and you're hitting top speed!!

"Two night stay was quite enough"

Rooms are very dated. The carpet was ripped in places all around the room. The bed was two singles pushed together with a mattress that did not fit this. The bathroom had a mixer tap shower which was so sensitive it was very hard to get the right temperature. The hotel could do with modernising and even just new carpet and paint in places. Breakfast was basic, when ordering bacon or sausages you get one item each. So it is worth ordering more of the menu. Bar, well as we were a wedding party and most of the rooms were booked by party guests we expected to be able to use the bar when we returned from the wedding venue. This was very difficult to arrange as the night porter would not allow it. After a while of discussing he finally agreed to open the bar. He then did not know about the drinks at the bar and the service was very long. I appreciate there was only him on the night shift but the hotel is full to capacity on a night and a wedding party was present I thought there would be more staff to contend with this as I cannot imagine the hotel is full often. I would not recommend staying here if you are after the comfort and want to spend more than the time sleeping at the hotel. Take a Travelodge as the price would probably be the same and you can normally trust that brand for what they advertise is what you get.

ArlingtonNorwich, Manager at BEST WESTERN George Hotel, responded to this review
I am very sorry to hear you had issues with your stay and service and will certainly look into the points you have raised so we can ensure this does not happen again.Thank you for your feedback.

"Night out "

There isn't anything special about this hotel, but is perfect if you're going out for the night in the city centre! Very close. Rooms are comfortable but very basic... Staff are nice and friendly- breakfast is fine but dining area is tiny! Would definitely return if I was going out for the night but not for a romantic setting. Good for value though.
