"Mediocre"

3
09/09/2018

Rooms arranged around a central atrium with a pool in the center. Guarantees the odor of chlorine whenever one exitse the room Rooms are reasonable size; the light switch near the door turns on a tiny bulb in a far corner behind a wall leaving most of the room dark. Fridge, microwave, coffee maker TV. Bathroom sink did not drain: took two reports to get attention. The fix was cosmetic: the plug was detached from its controlling lever and needed constant fiddling Breakfast was pathetic. (Example- bananas sliced in half)The room itself was so packed with tables that they obstructed the access to the self-service counters. Two saving graces: a daily free cocktail hour, and the fact that almost every single employee had a wide smile on their faces!

"Great Little Place"

07/09/2018

Great room with great location. Minutes away from the train depot. Great little restaurants walking distance from the hotel. Pool was nice to go swimming in, however they might want to turn the thermostat up a bit. Can't wait to come back to Durango and stay longer.

"Great Ammenties , Location and Staff"

06/09/2018

i chose the BW RIO GRANDE Inn due to the extra ammenities, services and staff, not just the complimentary bfast and hh, but especially the airport shuttle. Given the choices , the BW offers comfort and conveniences to restaurants and shopping as well as an indoor pool and hot tub.

"Durango for the train ride"

06/09/2018

Had booked 2 nights so we could enjoy the town and train, ended up booking another night. We had a fabulous stay, Everything we needed was right there, Enjoyed the great coffee in the morning and the breakfast buffet. Very nice spread with attentive staff. Enjoyed the happy hour and also the free laundry. Parking was great, parked right outside our door. Very close to the train station. Overall Perfect for our needs.

"Good Place to Stay"

05/09/2018

The indoor pool was very inviting and the continental breakfast was very good. The mattresses were a tad too soft for me but I got used to it after a few days. The room key kept dying on me and had to keep replacing it. Other than that, the staff were friendly and very helpful. If you`re looking for a hotel within walking distance of the train station and good restaurants nearby, then pick this hotel.

"Good Hotel with great bonuses"

05/09/2018

This hotel is a little dated and the layout is a bit unusual, but we really enjoyed our stay. The staff, including the front desk, the breakfast ladies, the bartender, and the cleaning staff were friendly and helpful. They have a free, large breakfast buffet and a free happy hour every evening with a fantastic bar tender. The rooms are dated but clean. The beds are very comfortable. The hotel is in walking distance of the Durango to Silverton train station and downtown Durango, but is about a 20 minute drive from the airport. We stayed for 2 nights and saw the staff drain and clean the indoor hot tub and also deep clean the entire pool area

"Never again"

27/08/2018

Haven't stayed at a hotel with outdoor corridors and window air conditioners in a long time. Stayed two nights only because I was with a tour group. The first night we had no hot water. Many people complained that their TV's didn't work. I never turned mine on. I did not feel safe in this hotel due to the fact of the outdoor corridors. Breakfast room was small. Pool in center of hotel so when you walked in all you could smell was chlorine. I will not be traveling with the tour group again because we were promised a better hotel and they apparently substituted in an effort to increase their profits.

Erica S, Front Office Manager at Best Western Plus Rio Grande Inn, responded to this review
I am terribly sorry you did not enjoy your stay. Your tour group has stayed with us multiple times. When issues like the hot water going out and a local cable outage occur, we try to resolve the issue as quickly as we can. If there was a way to foresee the issues, we would prevent them altogether. We have 24 hour security at our hotel, which is not offered at other hotels in Durango since the crime rate is so low. We do have indoor and outdoor entrances at our hotel, we would of happily moved you to an indoor room as long as we had the availability to do so if you had requested. We do our best to accommodate each guest the best we can.

"A little dated"

4
27/08/2018

We did not care for the traffic as we got there mid-afternoon. The hotel had a funky layout and we were not sure if it was a renovated office or what. Room was small and could stand some updates especially the French doors with full length glass going into our room. Complimentary cocktails were great and free hot breakfast was great too. Parking was an issue. We did not have a window.

"Good hotel in a great location"

5
21/08/2018

This hotel is located close to the railway station and also close to the downtown shops and restaurants. We could walk everywhere including on the river trail , the visitor center the Eolus restaurant, the Gaspacho cantina. The hotel is so freewheeling , you can use the pool, the spa, the free laundry, the free happy hour drinks with OTTO , and of course the free parking.(In Durango, you can park for free only after 6pm) We had a room with 2 queens on the third floor with a balcony facing the street . this was a great location and the rooms were clean and spacious with good beds, great bathrooms and kitchenette

"Finally a Best Western Plus that delivers the "Plus"!"

4
18/08/2018

Other than being a little dated, everything was perfect! Convenient location, comfortable room, and great service. By far the best breakfast buffet we've ever had at a Best Western Plus and probably one of the best breakfasts at any hotel. The last "Plus" we stayed at in Lubbock, TX was a complete disappointment so this was a pleasant surprise!

"End of the summer getaway"

4
17/08/2018

Our room was a typical 2 bed room, there was not much room to move around. the outside of the hotel was overall good. the indoor pool and hot tub was OK sized but closed early due to the fact that it is in the center of the hotel and all the rooms that are"inside" would be effected by the noise so we has to constantly tell our kids to keep it down to not bother the other guests. The hotel offers a Managers Cocktail hour and they provide a limited number of free drinks which was nice after a long day. The breakfast/cocktail area was very small and crowded if you were getting up early to make the train. The food was not bad for a free continental breakfast, you got your basics, scrambled/ hard boiled eggs, sausage patties, biscuits and gravy, Belgian waffle make to order, cold cereal, oatmeal, fresh fruit, yogurt, assorted pastries and breads, several juice options, and coffee. You got free parking (which is a big deal) and you are in walking distance to the train as well as many restaurants and shops, we never moved the car till we left. On the down side this pace could use some updates especially the elevator it was not working properly and we had to take the stairs on several occasions so if you cant do stairs ask for the first floor just in case the elevator stops working. Hopefully there will be a few updates before our next trip back!

"Close to everything we do in Durango."

11/08/2018

We always stay at this hotel when we are in Durango. It's at the end of the street so it's quiet. We can ride Durango Silverton rail road, lots of restaurants & can walk most places. They put on a hot meal for breakfast & have a afternoon happy hour with drinks. They have huge pool & hot tub in the center of hotel. I received a call a few days before we arrived saying they would give us a ground floor room as I requested when I booked months ago. I love their free laundry washer & dryer.

"Decent choice but needs a refresh"

3
10/08/2018

This hotel is reasonable and very clean. They do the best with what they have which is an older hotel. It is time for a refresh though (from the rugs and tile to the dark dated furnature and lighting). I can tolerate old but clean the one standout that is not acceptable is their antiquated and inferior in wall air conditioning units that dominate the hotel. They are so noisy both inside and outside the unit that you have a hard time enjoying the peace you crave when going on vacation. Hubby said you can land aircraft quieter. We honestly had a hard time sleeping it was so loud. We opting to not use it the following night at the expense of being hot. The breakfast was a nice benefit somewhat standard but very clean and orderly. The coffee needs a desperate change we found it to be of poor quality and left a black eye on the breakfast (it was fresh brewed). The complimentary newspaper was appreciated. We did not partake in the hotel happy hour preferring to enjoy a brighter more open environment for cocktails elsewhere. The staff was friendly and efficient.

"Always amazing"

06/08/2018

This hotel, staff, views, cleaniness, and convenience exceed my expectations always!!! Every stay is amazing !!!! I highly recommend staying with Best Western Rio Grande Inn!!! You wont be disappointed!!!

"Great Hotel Close to Shops and Dining"

5
06/08/2018

This hotel was perfect for our family vacation. We were traveling to see Mesa Verde and stopped in Durango for the night. The hotel is in a great location within walking distance to shopping and dining. They have a cute pool inside the atrium. The breakfast was nice. The two drinks per person at the evening receptions was a great touch. We appreciated the complimentary laundry machines.

"Great Location"

4
02/08/2018

This Best Western is a great place to stay if you want something close to downtown Durango. We stayed here 2 nights in Oct 2017, rates were great and you can leave your car there and walk everywhere in downtown Durango and even walk to the train station. Rooms were nice and they had everything in them we need, microwave and refrigerator. They had a breakfast bar with cereal and breads and in the evening they gave you drink coupons I would definitely stay there again

"A comfortable hotel with an average breakfast included"

4
27/07/2018

This hotel is on the edge of downtown. It is comfortable with spacious rooms, microwave, refrigerator and safe. It has an indoor pool, jacuzzi and gym. The room includes a breakfast which is average. Scrambled eggs, sausage, breads, cereals, juices and coffee or tea. Fresh fruit. Service is good. The room is clean. I would stay here again.

"Close to the train and easy walking distance to shops"

4
25/07/2018

We stayed 3 nights, Check in was easy and its just a little hard to make your way to it but we figured it out. We were on the 3rd floor and the pool is inside so it can be a touch noisy. They had a hot breakfast. The room was large had a balcony but beware if the door shuts on you while on balcony it locks sooo have your key. Our Balcony view was mostly the staircases but we didn't have time to sit we had a train to catch, ha!. They do offer a free drink during a social hour which was nice. The room is a little dated not many plugs had to use plugs in bathroom for phone chargers.

"No Airport shuttle"

2
21/07/2018

Beware. If you are looking for a hotel with available airport shuttle, this might not be the best choice for you. You have to arrange for that in advance or be stranded as it happened to us. Then, don't call them because they will be rude and hang up on you. Also, upon arrival, they will make sure you get the worst room in the whole hotel. If it hadn't been midnight when all that happened, I would have canceled our reservation and gone somewhere else.

"Exceptional staff?"

5
18/07/2018

Having toured the arid Arizona plains, it was a pleasant surprise to see trees surrounding the hotel. The unusual layout provides an atrium with enclosed pool/Jacuzzi. Each room has double French doors, but heavy curtains block light (and voyeurs?) from peeking through. The room I occupied on the third floor was spacious, clean and comfortable. A small balcony provided a view of mountains, something not seen in Central Florida. Accoutrements of a hotel mean little, if staff members are not accommodating. And this hotel has superior staff. Each person greeted as I came in from stimulating the local economy. There are two excellent restaurants within sight of the hotel. One thing that surprised me is free self-service laundry. Yeah, you read that correctly. Two washer/dryers are just beyond the fitness center available to guests at no cost. I had laundered clothes in Page, Arizona two days before, but it was a thrill to take care of that task a few days before returning to Orlando. Another pleasant surprise was free happy hour, something that many hotels in Israel provide. Each evening, our tour group gathered to discuss outings during the day (Mesa Verde). Each time, I requested a premium tequila. The barkeep asked if I wanted a double! Twist my arm? Of course, a double deserves a triple tip. This phenomenal “hometown feel” hotel was welcome, especially after a long journey through dozens of national parks and monuments.

"Handy Spot"

4
13/07/2018

Good place to stay in Durango, just near the railway station and the historic downtown area. They have a happy hour with free drinks round the indoor pool. Room was fine decent size, clean with two queen beds. We stayed here for one night but wished we had stayed for two as there is lots to see in this area.

"Great location!"

5
11/07/2018

This hotel is a great location for walking to the Train Station and the down town area. There is a great indoor pool and the breakfast is very nice with many choices. We had a pet room and it was clean and the beds are nice.

"Train cancellation but welcome surprise"

5
10/07/2018

Chose this hotel in Durango because of its good reviews and being two blocks from the Silverton Durango train depot. Even though our train Excursion got cancelled due to the fire in San Juan National Park, Durango was our next stop anyway after Mesa Verde National Park so we decided just to spend the night and head home from there. It actually worked out great it's only a short walk to the old Main Street where all the restaurants bars and shops are at. They were able to get us in the room early so we went downtown and found some lunch and walked around a little bit. The hotel was a little hard to find but the navigation took us right to it. The Hotel was great staff was very friendly and room was clean. Nice modern up-to-date hotel with all the normal amenities. They have a very nice indoor pool setup and on one end is the room where they serve the breakfast. We left early the next morning and didn't get a chance to try the breakfast. There's a bar in the breakfast room and part of the package is that in the evening each person gets two drinks. They have a couple of different beers and the bartender can mix a few special drinks. There's a really nice movie theater next to the train depot so we saw the 4 p.m. showing of Jurassic Park. Across from the hotel is a really nice Mexican food restaurant called Gazpacho so we got some take-out and took it back to the breakfast room and enjoyed our supper with the free drinks from the bar. Even though we were disappointed about the train trip finding this little spot in Durango was a welcome surprise, we quite enjoyed it. Hopefully we can reschedule the train Excursion someday in the future and if we do we plan on going back to this hotel. would recommended for anybody staying in Durango especially if they're planning to ride the Durango train to Silverton.

"Not Secure!"

2
09/07/2018

We spent 10 days on vacation in May. Out of the eight hotels we stayed at, this was the least secure. My niece's Samsung Galaxy 9 disappeared in a public area. There were no cameras at a vacation-type hotel in public areas. No one offered her an opportunity to speak to a manager. The day we left the hotel confirmed what was overheard, and that was the breakfast tip jar was emptied by someone the employees were heard saying they thought the guy was a guest, when in actuality, he just strolled on in. The sad thing is that the hotel had a nice pool area, is located in a convenient area and has a manager's reception. Still, because of the lack of security and uncaing front desk help, I cannot recommend this hotel.

"Most comfortable, clean and inviting in Durango."

5
08/07/2018

This is our go-to place when in Durango, CO. Always friendly, clean, and good amenities. Apparently there's been some remodeling, and a shelf fell down in our closet. The maintenance staff were responsive and courteous. It was fixed quickly and without a mess. The hotel is an easy walk to town, no need to drive. We especially enjoy the complimentary breakfast, with enough choices to please everyone. Staff are pleasant and interactive. There is also Happy Hour in evening with drinks served. Thanks so much for an enjoyable stay.

"Hot and unhelpful"

06/07/2018

We were booked into this hotel in late June on an emergency basis by a relocation service after we had to vacate our home due to a plumbing disaster. It was hot, and the room air conditioner, though set at 60, only brought the indoor temp to about 74. When we informed the management of this the next day, they said they would give us "a new one." They swapped out ours for another one, also set for 60, which did not decrease the temperature one iota. Or at least, they said they put in a different one; I suspect they just washed the dust off the old one. When we checked out the next day - the relocation service found us a much better room at half the price - we received a bill that showed everything had been paid for, and we went on our merry way. Three weeks later, we get our credit card bill showing they charged us $40 for the pet fee as an "incidental," when that fee was supposed to be included as part of the lodging that the relocation service would pay. When my husband went to the hotel to get this straightened out, they basically told him "Tough luck. We always do it this way." The relocation service almost instantly sent us a check for $40 as the quickest way to get this settled, but . . . the Rio Grande should have told us about the charge when we checked out, and we could have straightened it out then.

"More like a Motel than a hotel"

3
14/06/2018

Stayed one night so was OK. The room was clean enough but rather dark. Very small reception area with no real lobby. One good point : a couple of free drinks ( beer, wine etc. ) from the bar. The big disappointment was the breakfast where we had to use flimsy paper plates & cups and cheap plastic cutlery. Not much choice either. We stayed here about 25 years ago and our recollection was that it was much better then. Within easy walking distance of historic steam railroad and downtown Durango.

"Great place to stay"

5
13/06/2018

Even with TM the difficulties of the 416 fire, staff was wonderful and extremely hospitable!! I appreciate their efforts taking care of the firefighters-very noble.Still plenty to do in town. Smoke clears out in the morning and weather is beautiful.

"Good hotel, great location!"

4
06/06/2018

We were taking the Durango - Silverton train ride so needed a two-nights stay in town. The BWP Rio Grande inn is next to the town center, walking distance to everywhere, most importantly´to the railway station. The hotel is newish and clean, personnel very nice, good room and (important for the kid!) an indoor pool with jacuzzi. The beds were fine, but the sound isolation felt weak, we could nearly follow the conversation in the next room. Fortunately the people were quiet. We used the complimentary self-service laundry, only the detergent had to be purchased from a wending machine. The washer and dryer were new, clean and worked well. The elevators became a kind of a joke, they were so slow. But who is in a hurry when vacationing ... The hotel offers a "manager's reception" every night with a couple of free drinks for adults, have not seen this perk often. The breakfast was standard, nothing was missed but the space was a bit cramped. All in all, this hotel can be heartily recommended, good location is most important!

"Average"

3
01/06/2018

Nice enough for a 2.5*. The safe didn't work and the breakfast is Lousy very few choices. But it was a large room, quiet, clean and had good hot water. Good enough for one night while visiting the area and taking the old time train ride.

"Great place to stay"

4
31/05/2018

Location is excellent if downtown is your interest. Only a few blocks from downtown and restaurants. Also very close to the Durango & Silverton railing. Rooms were comfortable and nice size. Breakfast was not much but didn't expect much. Free beer at night.

"Quiet gem of a hotel"

5
28/05/2018

We were riding the train so we wanted a hotel within walking distance of the station. We were just down the street. It was perfect. Clean, comfortable hotel with hot biscuits and gravy at breakfast . Free drinks at night. Large room with balcony. Bed was perfect. Really nothing bad about this hotel.

"Durando Short Vacation"

5
25/05/2018

We traveled to Durango and our stay was two nights over three days. The B W allowed us to park there while on the train ride. The Hotel staff was pleasant and informative, rooms clean with excellent cocktails and a worm hot breakfast. We deffinately will stay again.

"Soccer Tourney-Durango"

4
18/05/2018

Overall the stay was good. The breakfast was a big hit for the kiddos. There was a great selection of food and plenty of it. Downside was that there were 3 or 4 other soccer teams staying at the same hotel so there was no place to eat breakfast. The indoor pool was nice but too small for the amount of guest.

"Ah Durango!"

5
15/05/2018

All the activity in Durango was in close driving distance and mostly walking distance from this hotel making the trip pleasant and efficient! The staff was very warm and welcoming with every interaction, handled our sports team and parents very well!

"Great stay"

14/05/2018

You are in historic District and there is so much to do. Wonderful food and alot to see. Close to the rail road that takes you to Silverton. All day trip but what a view. We had the hot tub to our selves.

"Location. Location. Location! Close to everything."

13/05/2018

The BWPlus was wonderful. All of the staff was super attentive. This facility is dated but very clean. Free wifi, free breakfast, free happy hour, you can't beat it! We were able to walk to everything... the train, fabulous restaurants, etc. Would book rooms here again!

"Excellent location"

5
10/05/2018

Only a block walk to Durango's Historic downtown. Very friendly, with comfortable rooms, good breakfast. Plenty of parking outside, and reasonable price. Indoor pool is a centrepiece of the hotel. Air conditioning was very noisy, but a minor complaint on an otherwise good stay.

"Comfortable and quiet"

02/05/2018

An unusual building with a swimming pool and spa in the central atrium and rooms around the outside on three levels. Easy to get to. Comfortable and quiet room. Good breakfast. All for a reasonable tariff.

"Great Place to Stay in Durango"

5
30/04/2018

The hotel in conveniently located in the Historical District in downtown Durango. When arriving, we were greeted warmly by the receptionist and when asked for restaurant recommendations within walking distance, she recommended the Palace Restaurant, which was right on. Room was clean and beds were comfortable. We especially enjoyed our two free drinks back at the hotel bar pool after dinner. We met a couple there and sat down next to the pool and had a nice visit with them. So relaxing. The bar tender then gave me a full refill of my wine, after already having my two complimentary glasses, in a huge glass to take back to our room. Definitely recommend this hotel!

"Good Hotel in downtown Durango"

20/04/2018

We spent 4 nights in this hotel. It was very convenient to downtown restaurants, pubs and shopping plus it is only 1 1/2 blocks from Durango Silverton Railroad. Good breakfast and the cocktail hour had a nice choice. The staff was very helpful. We had a poolside room which could be a little noisy, but was convenient.

Just checked in and what a pleasure it was working with Erica and Catrena...they were so pleasantly accommodating with our requests that it really made us feel welcome. Room is super clean, bed firm like we love, linens soft and clean. Managers reception with two free alcoholic drinks per adult capped an excellent day. "Last minute to change hotels"

5
09/04/2018

My son couldn't pick me up from the airport and I had booked at a different motel in Durango. Knowing that the shuttle service would cost about $80 round trip, I went looking for a hotel that had a shuttle service to the airport. The cost of the BW room was about the same as the other motel plus the $80 and that was the deciding factor. Add to that, it is walking distance to everything you need. People are very friendly there, room was great, quiet, the coffee in the morning was good and they had almond milk!! It will be our go to place for future Durango visits.

Going on 20 years at this property and it just keeps getting better. Free washer/dryer (just buy the soap, they have it up front) Awesome pool (heated) for the kids. Walking distance to everything fun in Durango. GREAT BAR and TWO free cocktails/wine each night for the 21 and up :) Freshly re-done rooms comfy beds and a block and half from the train. Great mini gym too.

I love the pool with poolside rooms and how close hotel is to downtown fun. The staff is friendly and accommodating. Only issue was the poorly installed/unlevel tub. When showing, there was no way to prevent a flood of water on the floor so wet had to use many towels to soak it up.

Erica S, General Manager at Best Western Plus Rio Grande Inn, responded to this review
Thank you for staying with us and all of your kind words! We have got our maintenance team on the uneven tub issue. We hope to see you again soon!

22/03/2018

we were in 233 which is in the outside so u had to walk outside to get inside to the pool.which we didn't like because it was cold.it is very nice that the adults get a free cocktail but if u don't drink than it's not a treat for u.where i was most disappointed was with breakfast.the eggs are powdered and wet, the sausage looked boiled and the tortillas were strait from the bag cold..if u can give free liquor to people you can spend more money on a better breakfast. the breakfast lady was really nice.

Thank you for staying with us. I'm glad that you chose to have your Birthday night in Durango. We are always delighted to see you. We will continue to work hard at being your number one choice in Durango. Thank you for all of your kind words.

"Great location but......"

We love staying at this Best Western, but this year instead of letting me know I can't pay cash for our rooms, like I did the previous year, I was told to go to the nearest store and purchase a card to use for the transaction. Not what I wanted to hear after being on the road all day, and who doesn't accept cash? Also, the shelf with the safe on it collapsed in my daughters room. They simply moved her to another room. This could have been detrimental had it fallen on my grand baby.

Erica S, General Manager at Best Western Plus Rio Grande Inn, responded to this review
Thank you once again for stating your displeasure with our policy which authorizes the amount of your stay on a credit card at check in. Most hotels abide by the same policy. We have no issue with accepting cash payment at check out, but we do need a credit card on file in case the guests leave without checking out or to cover any incidentals (damages). Some guests that do not want an authorization on their personal credit or debit card will load the funds onto a Visa/MasterCard Gift card (available at most grocery stores) and use that at check in. It's a simple solution if you don't want to have any authorizations on your personal cards. Once we were notified that the shelf came loose, we moved your daughter to another room for her safety.

"Good value hotel in Durango "

This is a good value hotel! But the pics are deceiving. Our room was kind of old, but clean and comfortable! Good location in proximity to downtown Durango, but we still drove. Parking is free. The breakfast area is very nice and the attendant is super helpful and attentive!

Erica S, General Manager at Best Western Plus Rio Grande Inn, responded to this review
Thank you for staying with us at the Best Western PLUS Rio Grande Inn. We are making a lot of upgrades and thought it would be best to update the pictures once we have finished. We are nearly finished and have a photo shoot planned for the property. I thank you for your feedback and would like to invite you back to our hotel in the future.

"Not a bad room, but the supporting details weren't pleasing..."

I selected this hotel based on it's location to downtown Durango, our previous stay was at the Strater Hotel. This Best Western is above average in price compare to other hotels in the area, so I expected a great experience. We stayed in room 311, third floor, room doors facing the pool, balcony facing downtown. Immediately I was concerned about the rooms having windows on the front doors, as this could have an effect on privacy and sound proofing. Turns out I was correct, while the windows had curtains, there was a gap between the double doors almost a half an inch wide. This allowed quite a bit of light to shine through and also plenty of noise, as the pool is directly outside the door and down three floors, within a main atrium. If there is anyone in the pool, you will here them loud and clear. The room itself was roomy and comfortable, bed was firm (how I like it). The room also had a couch, microwave, and refrigerator. The bathroom had a jacuzzi tub. The balcony view was obstructed, but we didn't spend much time out there, as it's still a bit cold. Front desk service was courteous and prompt, check-in was a breeze, as was check-out. During check-in, we were provided a ticket for 4 free drinks at the bar (a nice bonus). I could see myself staying here again if it weren't for the front door and noise issues. While my experience was "poor" I would have to rate the property as "average".

"Close to downtown, evening happy hour"

06/02/2018

We have stayed at this hotel numerous times while visiting our college student. It is a bit dated, but has always been, welcoming, clean, great service and within walking distance to everything on main street (shops, restaurants, train). We have stayed in a few different types of rooms (outside entry standard rooms), inside standard room, king room with balcony. This hotel features an indoor pool/hot tub in the center of the hotel with most of the rooms overlooking pool/hot tub. Every evening they feature a complimentary cocktail hour and in the mornings, complementary breakfast. Free parking and wifi.

Stayed here on a recommendation from a co-worker. Very easy parking for big vehicles as we were driving a 30ft bus. Front desk staff was very nice and accommodating. Got us a room right by where we parked. Bed was very comfortable. Room was clean and ready when we got there. Very convenient to Main Street shops ands restaurants. Walked to them and walked home. Very nice place to stay.

Location is excellent. Staff helpful and caring but miscommunications regarding various issues did take place. Therefore confirm information. Mattresses are terribly uncomfortable - unbearably hard. Improvements can be made on the "Deluxe Breakfast".

We love this motel's location, indoor swimming pool, and outstanding staff. The rooms are spacious and many rooms have jetted bathtubs to enjoy. They have complimentary cocktails. The entire facility has a wonderful, warm vibe.

"Great hotel for kids and adults"

5
26/12/2017

this hotel was within walking distance of the train station when we did the polar express. We booked because of location only, but were very pleased with the set up, warm pool for the kids and happy hour lounge for adults while the kids were swimming. We will definitely stay here again if we visit Durango in the future.

I would bring my family here for a vacation next year when we come back to Colorado on business. The staff was very nice and the room was just what we needed for our current stay. The pool area is right of the lounge so you can keep an eye on the kids while you relax.

"Great Coctail Place"

18/12/2017

This is a great place close to downtown Durango. The evening 2 free drinks is super. The quality of the breakfast is not so great. The room is large and comfy except for the heating unit. Has a pool area that is nice. Staff is helpful and friendly.

Great location easy walking distance to everything. Rooms were ok. Breakfast was not that good as years past. It seemed that the food was average at best. Service from Gina was exceptional. She remembered my family from years past and she was very personable. She kept the entire space clean and well stocked. She deserves a raise.

"Old room with a great exterior"

12/12/2017

The exterior of the hotel was nice, even the lobby, and pool, but all this changed once I walked into the room. The room was old, everything was a different color, it was dim, the heater was loud, and there were no channels to watch on the tv, cable was hooked up but did not work.

BWRG-Management, Front Office Manager at Best Western Plus Rio Grande Inn, responded to this review
Thank you for taking the time to give us your feedback. I am sorry we didn't meet your expectations. We are currently working on remodeling and updating every room.

The hotel is convenient, comfortable and the staff is friendly and helpful. The rooms are quiet and the beds are comfy. The rooms are clean and the staff is friendly. We have stayed here over and over again and will continue to stay there when in Durango.

"Nice, clean, convenient"

5
04/12/2017

This hotel is a nice clean hotel. Nice pool, hot tub, breakfast, happy hour. Easy walking distance to the train station and downtown. Not sure there is too much more you can ask for. I would suggest if you are staying there in cold weather that you ask for an inside room as the corner rooms could be really cold since they are near outside doors.

"Great Hotel"

28/11/2017

We have stayed at a lot of Best Westerns. This one has been the best! The staff was always so helpful. The breakfast were great! The two free bar drinks was enjoyable. Also there were washers and dryers available at no cost to use for the guest. We washed out clothes the night before leaving. The only problem we had is that the hot water in the shower was just above lukewarm.

"Steps from downtown!"

4
26/11/2017

This hotel is great for families, and is a couple short blocks from Main Street. We were in town for the Polar Express, and it took under ten minutes to walk to the train depot. Everything was super clean and well kept, and the rooms themselves are great — comfy beds, nice tv, WiFi, clean bathroom, etc. Do request a room with a window to the outside or with a balcony. We had no outside light — our room opened up to the second floor hallway and it seemed at times that walkers by could look right in. We did miss the daylight, but some of the balcony rooms looked lovely. The pool is well-loved by kids, and it was fun and relatively clean! The pool area definitely got a bit rowdy in the evening, so if you're hesitant about kids, you might look elsewhere. Our kids LOVED the pool and the breakfast and everything about the hotel. The breakfast was crowded but good, and all the staff members were super friendly. Providing cocktail hour drink tickets was a sweet touch!

"Liesurely Travel"

21/11/2017

We stay here on both ends of air travel as we are a three hour drive from the Durango airport, which makes for a much less stressful flying day. The airport shuttle service has always been on schedule, even waiting for us upon the arrival of our flight. The hotel is clean and comfortable and is within walking distance from downtown. We will continue to schedule our flights to include the BW Rio Grande.

"It's all about location"

4
15/11/2017

This is an average hotel with a great location// walking distance to downtown Durango, which is nice to imbibe and not have to drive! The room was clean and reasonably priced ( stayed off season). My major complaint was our room location. It was right next to the pool, and the way the hotel is designed, a lot of people passed by our room. At all hours of the night we could hear people in the hallways. Not very restful at all. The door to our room opened right up to the pool, so anyone at the pool could look into our room, as the bed was the first thing you see when you walk in. It didn't feel very private. I was contacted by management about my complaint, and they simply said I should have booked a room not by the pool, they have have other rooms. Easy for them to say, I booked through the hotel's website, and that wasn't an option. Nor was there an option when I checked in. Long story short, we had a lousy night sleep because our room location and hallway hotel noise. Everything else about this hotel is great. I would stay again if not near the pool. So if you value a good night sleep make sure and request a higher floor room away from the pool!

BWRG-Management, Front Office Manager at Best Western Plus Rio Grande Inn, responded to this review
I'm not sure who you spoke with about your room we do have certain room types that are only located by the pool but we would be happy to better accommodate you in the future.

30/10/2017

Hotel is clean, comfortable and convenient location to downtown Durango. It is within walking distance to the train depot and all the shops and restaurants in historic downtown. Everyone at hotel was courteous and professional, breakfast was typical fare not memorable and the free drinks at happy hour is nice before heading out for dinner. If you're in Durango for the train and downtown this hotel will serve your needs. We booked a room with a balcony but never used it the view was obstructed by the outside staircase, you can save $$ by not having a balcony.

"Great location and great customer service"

29/10/2017

We were just here for one night but it was centrally located in order to walk to downtown. Every person we encpuntered, who worked for the property, was friendly and engaging. We plan on venturing back one day and will certainly be staying there.

"Well run well located property"

26/10/2017

Putting aside the fact that the facility layout is dated as are the rooms, the staff goes out of their way to provide a good lodging experience. The front desk accommodated several requests without complaint. The happy hour is a welcome benefit. Everyone was friendly. Breakfast was ample if standard fare. But be sure to ask for an outer room if you want a window.

BWRG-Management, Front Office Manager at Best Western Plus Rio Grande Inn, responded to this review
Thank you for taking the time to give us your feedback and I am happy to hear that you enjoyed your stay. We will be renovating the guest rooms this winter.

Location is great. Easy walking distance to center of town and restaurants. Views from the 3rd floor are great including the Las Animal River and foothills. Very quiet even though close to highway. Wonderful interior with glass elevator next to the swimming pool. Convenient parking. Beds plush and comfy!

very hotel employee i came in contact with was friendly and helpful. All equipment was working (that's rare). I thought the breakfast was first-rate, and the free drinks in the Lounge was a excellent touch. I've never been in a hotel that was so well-staffed and expertly managed. Great job, everyone!

"Great Birthday Trip"

24/10/2017

There were 10 of us on this annual birthday trip to Durango. The Best Western is always our choice because of the friendly service, indoor pool, free breakfasts, and closeness to the downtown area. You can't beat the price for a family outing.

"Best Hotel in Durango, Colorado near Downtown"

This a great hotel. Some rooms have private balconies. The pool and hot tub are great with powerful jets in the Jacuzzi. Breakfast is included in the price and it is a full spread of eggs, ham, sausage, biscuits and gravy, cereal, fruit, yogurt, fruit, waffles, bagels and more. All in an easy walk to EVERYTHING downtown!

This is a great hotel. Convenient to the train depot. Great location, which is quiet but also near the train depot. Easy walking to the train depot. Plenty of restaurants nearby. Rooms were clean. Atrium with the pool was nice.

"Best Western Rio Grande Inn"

17/10/2017

This Best Western is conveniently located within the Train Depot of the Durango/Silverton narrow gauge rail line. It's also a five minute walk to all the restaurants and shopping district in downtown Durango. The building itself is beautiful and built around the swimming pool. The courtyard is the pool. The staff at the hotel were very friendly and helpful. The breakfast serviced was delightful with something for everyone including fresh hot food. The rooms are clean, but the beds are just OK. we will be staying here in the future.

Great location, great pool, rooms average, breakfast area ok, bar area bad. Price was high! Two block walk to downtown very nice. Parking was good, hotel close to the train a most do while you are there. Lobby very small but did offer a few things people might need. Rooms were cleaned fast each day and employees were very friendly.

17/10/2017

The Hotel is in walking distance of the train and shops! The hotel staff were very friendly. Room was clean and tidy. For an older hotel it is well kept. Only thing we thought odd was no screens on any windows! Could be because it was October..... not sure but that did bother us a bit as we had window open and there was a walkway along the exterior rooms.

BWRG-Management, Front Office Manager at Best Western Plus Rio Grande Inn, responded to this review
Thank you for taking the time to give us your feedback. I am happy that you enjoyed your stay. We will be doing a remodel this winter and screens are on our list to update.

"Great Location in Durango"

14/10/2017

It's easy walking distance to a lot of great restaurants and the main strip in Durango. Little kids seem to enjoy the pool. Adults seem to enjoy the free drink from the lounge during happy hour. Rooms were clean and have reliable internet available. I would stay there again.

"Nice hotel with good location"

4
12/10/2017

Good Breakfast and very nice pool. Location is perfect for walking to downtown and the train station is only two blocks away. We enjoyed being able to walk downtown. We did have some trouble with the hot water in our shower in the morning but the maintenance man seemed to fix the next day. The Jacuzzi tub was not worth the effort of filling up the tub and of course the water was not hot.

"Couldn't finish our stay"

11/10/2017

This hotel is conveniently located next to the railroad and walking distance to historic downtown- the primary reason we booked it- the staff were very friendly especially the wonderful lady taking care of the breakfast area which was very good- the room was AWFUL- when we walked in there was an immediate odor of mildew coming from the air conditioner- the bed was hard and I could have had a better shower with an outside waterhose.

"GREAT LOCATION - FACILITY - STAFF"

5
09/10/2017

Best Western has put together a winning combination here in Durango. The location is perfect, being so close to the center of Durango and very close to the narrow gauge railway. The facility is well maintained and up to date. The staff is friendly and helpful. The hot breakfast is one of the best to be found on the road. Sandy, the breakfast manager, cheerfully greets everyone and makes sure everything is in perfect order. In addition to the complementary hot breakfast, the hotel offers a nightly manager's night with complementary cocktails served by a cheerful bartender. All of this amounts to a hotel that far exceeds any reasonable expectations.

"Colorado Trip"

We took a trip through Colorado and we stayed several nights in hotels. This hotel was not as nice as some of the other Best Westerns we stayed at in other cities. It was not worth the price of the hotel.

"Charming place in a great location!"

4
03/10/2017

Our room was fine with comfy mattresses and very clean. There was a cocktail hour each afternoon. The breakfasts were good with several hot selections. There was an indoor pool. There was always lemony ice water available. You could walk down the street to many different restaurants. There was a trolley that ran thru town and buses easily available!

"Refreshing!"

5
02/10/2017

As soon as we walked in the room we were relieved at the sight and smell of cleanliness. The staff was friendly and the hotel offered great amenities. The location was within walking distance of town so that was nice after a long drive. We had a great experience with each staff member we encountered.

"The endlessly plugged tub drain"

3
23/09/2017

We spent two nights in Durango, Co ate the BW. The room was expensive considering how small and dingy it was. We had to take our showers in a tub with a clogged drain. It was not pleasant. The parking was non-existent. We are older and had to drag luggage quite a distance. Seems there were more cars parked than rooms available.

BWRG-Management, Front Office Manager at Best Western Plus Rio Grande Inn, responded to this review
Thank you for taking the time to give us your feedback. We will be doing a renovation of the guest rooms this winter. As for parking we have a small north lot a very large south lot that has enough spaces for each room. I am so sorry we didn't meet your expectations.

"Beware of Senior Invasion"

4
22/09/2017

The hotel, staff , amenities and location are excellent. Our stay however was ruined by 3-bus loads of seniors who basically took over the hotel and forced us(group of 8-seniors) out of the hotel. The breakfast itself was outstanding but could not enjoy due to the bus groups.

BWRG-Management, Front Office Manager at Best Western Plus Rio Grande Inn, responded to this review
Thank you for taking the time to give us your feedback. This time of year we do have a lot of tour groups in and I am sorry that they were all over the place.

"Best Western.....Plus?"

3
21/09/2017

In a decent location near to the train station and the main drag, I'd recommend this hotel, but be careful in your room choice - the side with the view also gets the noise from the main road, and some rooms, overlooking the inner pool area may be on the dark side. Our room was fine really, the stained toilet, which shouldn't been cleaned though. The big let-down for us was the breakfast, just some standard issue tepid re-constituted scrambled eggs, which tasted of nothing, pappy white bread, a few cereals and drinks - easily beaten by a cut-price 'Super 8' hotel we stayed at near Albuquerque - for a BW 'plus' hotel this is not good enough. Worse, and depressingly, it appears that absolutely everything, the plates, the cups, the cutlery etc. is simply disposed of after use; this is really awful. Hotels make a big deal about 'protecting the environment' by re-using towels etc; the hypocrisy of what is obviously a cost-cutting exercise, when set against the casual disposal of bags full of plastic from the dining room, destined, presumably, for land-fill, is clear for all to see. Best Western bean-counters in head-office should be over-ruled, and proper plates and cutlery used, and washed up afterwards!

BWRG-Management, Front Office Manager at Best Western Plus Rio Grande Inn, responded to this review
Thank you for taking the time to give us your feedback. I am so sorry that we didn't meet your expectations I will pass all of your concerns on to upper management and discuss the breakfast options with the breakfast manager.

"Love the Happy Hour(s)"

5
19/09/2017

The location is the best for taking a short walk to the Durango train station. The rooms are pretty nice, staff does a great job. Nice looking pool and hot tub. Guests can use the laundry for no charge, just purchase soap at the desk in the main lobby. Every night a bar tender makes almost any drink you desire, two hour happy hour, 2 drink a night limit. Breakfast in the morning can be crowded, but be patient it's worth the wait.

"Location...."

15/09/2017

This hotel us very convenient to historic downtown. It was mostly clean. Staff was very friendly and helpful, especially the breakfast attendants. It was very noisy with lots of street noise, other guests and the train. Pool was ice cold, definitely not heated. We ended up going to the rec center to swim. Breakfast was good. It was really expensive for a basic room. It is also supposed to be a smoke free property and we smelled marijuana twice, once was really strong. The phone in our room was broken. Front desk just said okay to everything but I doubt anything was or will be done. I would only consider staying here for a great rate. Otherwise will look for another spot on our next trip.

BWRG-Management, Front Office Manager at Best Western Plus Rio Grande Inn, responded to this review
Thank you for taking the time to give us your feedback. I am so sorry that we didn't meet all of your expectations. The noise is a hard one sometimes its quieter than others just depends on the time of year. As for the smoking it is a non smoking property including marijuana but because it is legal in Colorado people smoke outside. We will be ding a remodel of the guest rooms this winter and will take everything you had to say into consideration.

"AN ENJOYABLE STAY IN A VERY CENTRAL LOCATION"

5
13/09/2017

My wife and chose the Best Western Plus Rio Grande Inn on the basis of (1) The good TripAdvisor reviews and (2) Its central location in Durango. As we needed to catch the Durango-Silverton train to go to Soaring Tree Top Adventures (highly recommended) we needed to be able to walk to the station at 7.30 a.m. The Best Western Plus Rio Grande Inn is only a few minutes' walk from the train station. (It was also only four minute's walk from T's Smokehouse - where we had a pleasant flavoursome meal on our first night in Durango.) After a great drive from Moab (via the spectacular "Million Dollar Highway"), we checked in quickly and went to our room. The room was absolutely fine and we quickly settled in. We were told (by the helpful people at reception) that we each could have a couple of "Happy Hour" drinks in the hotel bar. (This was a nice gesture which we appreciated but, personally, we would have preferred a lower room rate.) The breakfast was pleasant and the hotel's Internet worked well. We did experience some problems when trying to enter our room using our key cards on several occasions - always frustrating and the hotel's elevator (with a glass side which looked over the internal swimming pool) was not the fastest elevator we have ever been on. Our only negative comment is to do with the swimming pool - there were a fair number of children staying in the hotel and at times the noise from the swimming pool area was very loud indeed. We used the hotel's free-to-use washing-machines and driers - these all worked well and we were very pleased indeed that they were there. The hotels "Fitness Room" was good - small but well-eqippped. There was, also, plenty of free parking at the hotel. We would, most certainly, stay at the Best Western Plus Rio Grande Inn again if we returned to Durango.

Me and my girlfriend are travelling Route 66, and we stayed here for 2 nights on our tour of the US. Nice well made out hotel, great pool area where we met some great people. Then I popped in for a drink at the bar, well Kym the bar maid she is red hot. Made us feel welcome and at home and planned out our trip to Vegas for us as she'd lived their pervious. If you're lucky enough maybe she'll pour you a drink !!

11/09/2017

we came along way to stay at this hotel in Durango, co. very disappointed with the service we got!Unfortunately, my son didn't see that the hot tube was closed and a front desk staff was very unpolite about asking them to get out! seemed like a bunch of young generation with no respect.Room was dirty, dust on ALL surfaces. just a bad stay overall!

BWRG-Management, Front Office Manager at Best Western Plus Rio Grande Inn, responded to this review
Thank you so much for taking the time to give us your feedback on how your stay was. I am so sorry that we didn't meet your expectations. I am very curious to know who your son had spoken with so that I can address this issue with the staff immediately. I will also be speaking with housekeeping about the dust issues. Again thank you so much for reaching out to us and we sincerely apologize and I would love to be able to discuss this further but Tripadvisor doesn't allow us to reach out to you with contact information.

"Not worth the money"

3
04/09/2017

My wife and I are platinum members of best western and were kind of confused as to why this listing was so pricey! I've stayed at many other best western properties that are just as good or better for much less than what this listing costed us. When we come to Durango again, we will unfortunately be making the decision to stay at a Hilton property so that we get more value for the amount we paid for this stay! The rooms are dated, and we had a few stains on our comforter. The breakfast is a very typical best western breakfast. The pool was nice, but I wouldn't say it was heated like advertised. The nicest part of staying here was that they gave you free drink vouchers every night. Not sure if this was due to us being platinum members or they are just part of the expensive cost to stay here.

BWRG-Management, Front Office Manager at Best Western Plus Rio Grande Inn, responded to this review
Thank you for taking the time to give us your feedback. The cocktail hour is for everyone and we are planning on doing a remodel this winter during our slower season. Our cost are a little more than some of the other properties in Durango and that is because we do offer the free drinks each night as well as our location to downtown. We are in walking distance to downtown where the train station is located as well as restaurants and bars.

"Wonderful staff"

5
04/09/2017

Great place. Very clean. Above all the staff was perfect. The front desk went above and beyond from providing an early check in to getting us to the airport. The kitchen staff was so friendly and helpful. They really cared about making dining in the hotel an outstanding experience. Housekeeping kept things immaculate and was super friendly as well. We even interacted with the maintenance staff when they went out of their way to pick us up from the airport. Highly recommend this hotel.

"Dated property not worth the money"

We expected a high quality property as this is a Best Western Plus. While the staff was nice and the location was good the property is way overdue for a remodel. Once we checked in and I saw the hole in the ceiling, the missing wood trim, chipped paint, etc I asked at the front desk if we got a bad room but I was told the whole property was due for a remodel. Very disappointing for the price (for reference I spend 30+ nights a year in hotels in both large and small cities). We recommend you look elsewhere for either a great truly historic (not just old) property in Durango or go for a newer modern property.

Thank you for taking the time to give us your feedback on what you liked and disliked about your stay. i am happy to hear that the staff was nice and we do have a great location. We are currently in the middle of getting things squared away with the design team to remodel this winter. We remodel in the winter because that is our slowest time of year and we are able to get into the rooms.

"Okay in a pinch, but pricey for what we got"

29/08/2017

Decor was pretty dated, bed was hard, if you are going to use white bed spreads, make sure they are stain free, when there is a coal burning train engine nearby-keep the door closed (there was ash all over the nearest bed to the door when we got there). Durango is a pricey town, but this was not a good value. Wifi was good. :)

I had mistakenly booked the wrong hotel for the night of Friday Aug 25, 2017, thinking I had a reservation for the Rio Grande Inn. Ms. Nikita Ritter was on duty, and finding no reservation for me, tried to find a room at the other Best Westerns in the area. Finding no rooms at the other Best Westerns, Ms. Ritter called other competing hotels in the area until she found a room for us. She then Googled directions for us to the other hotel. It was late on a busy Friday night, and vacancies were hard to find. Ms. Ritter really bailed us out!

24/08/2017

We were so impressed with our King size room, located right by the pool and lounge areas. We had a fantastic time, making new friends (now on Facebook with), and loved the hotel staff. Everyone was so nice and helpful. We would definitely come back to stay specifically at this hotel in the future if ever in Durango again. Loved the whole experience!

Staff was very helpful and accommodating.Great location just a few blocks (short walk) from the Silverton train and Strader Hotel. Clean, quiet rooms. Great indoor pool. Friendly staff. Breakfast, not great but better than adequate. Complimentary drinks each evening.

If in Moab you might as well as beat the heat in one of this fine hotel's 2 bedroom units. Nice partial kitchen fully supplied. My room had a large and small balcony. Right in center of Moab. Expensive but worth every penny.

A short romantic get away. Jacuzzi tub, indoor heated pool, full breakfast and free drinks at the bar nightly. Very clean room and charming room housekeepers. Definitely stay again. We had an outside patio and found all of the staff warm and friendly.

"TRIP FOR THE TRAIN"

15/08/2017

Excellent location to catch the train, Friendly staff especially the kitchen crew who were working in an area way too small for the size of hotel. Had to dance around other guests to get food without bumping into them, The AC in our room was very noisy but did not want to go through the hassle of moving all our stuff to another room so just manged to sleep through it, Would expect a 200 dollar a night room would be have better than this but it is Durango after all.

Wonderful staff. We were given drink coupons and encouraged to stay and relax before going out to our meal. It was nice getting 2 drinks per person and starting the evening off on a fun note. Great location within walking distance to bars and restaurants in Durango area. Breakfast was great the next morning- full breakfast bar. Very pleased with our stay.

10/08/2017

We have been to Durango for an overnight four years in a row. Love this hotel! Clean, comfortable and friendly, efficient people at check in. When you check in they give you a card for two free drinks each during Happy Hour in their breakfast area (Otto's maybe). We sit and enjoy our free drinks and snacks and watch everyone in the pool. Never tried the pool or hot tub, but always people in it. Convenient walk to the center of town, the railway, the theater and lots of restaurants. Complimentary breakfast in the morning is always well stocked and good! Great coffee!!

10/08/2017

My son and I took a trip to Durango this week and we stayed in this hotel. First off the GM of this hotel, Erica, is a wonderful person! We stayed in a suite that faces the pool and it was an amazing room! Super clean, and the jet bathtub was great as well. The pool and hot tub were really clean and maintained and it stayed quiet even while the kids played. We had a nice balcony as well. The hotel is a short walk down to the train station and the downtown shops, and the weather was perfect to take a walk. We stayed here for the Polar Express last December, since it is such a short walk to the train station. They have a complimentary managers special in the evenings and a great variety breakfast bar in the mornings. Overall, our experience was great and we will definitely be back in just a few months!

"Convenient location in town"

4
08/08/2017

This hotel is really well located in town - an easy walk to shops and restaurants. There was plenty of free parking, even for our large SUV and motorcycle trailer. Our room was clean and quiet, first floor location was easy. Upper level rooms seemed to have little balconies that people were sitting out on. Other guests were enjoying the indoor pool. Two free cocktails per person, per day and breakfast is included. What's not to like?

"Great job!"

5
08/08/2017

Quick easy check-in. Clean hotel. Happy guests. Durango Colorado is a fabulous place for a vacation. The trains in downtown Durango run from 730am to 730pm so they won't bother your sleep. I would stay here again.

"Great location - good value"

4
07/08/2017

We spent three nights at the Best Western Plus Rio Grande Inn. It's conveniently located in the downtown area within walking distance of all the downtown restaurants and shops. Other options are the older, historic hotels on Main Street but they are more expensive. The Doubletree is at the top of the pay scale and located right on the Animas River. Best Western met all our needs and the included breakfast and happy hour makes it a good value as well. Two thumbs up for BW Rio Grande.

"Stayed Down Town close to everything"

5
03/08/2017

Wanted to stay somewhere that we didn't have to drive around, we checked in and were able to walk to the main strip, shipped and had dinner walked off part of our dinner going back to the hotel, we didn't do the Durango train ride but if I did this is where I would stay it was also down the street. Was a little more expensive than we normally pay but it was worth it.

"Great location"

5
01/08/2017

At the edge of downtown this location is excellent, quiet yet an easy walk to the train station and downtown area. The breakfast has a large variety of options. We stayed for 5 nights with no problems.

"Hotel was fine apart from breakfast"

4
30/07/2017

The rooms were fine and comfortable, and reasonably priced for this expensive town. The position was great, two minutes walk from the steam train, and the happy hour was a nice touch. However breakfast was disappointing with a selection of processed bread type stodge, doughy waffles, little fresh healthy food and all served in paper plates and cups, and plastic which was not recycled. Very wasteful.

"Great location ....."

Excellent location, able to walk to downtown for shopping and lots of good restaurants and catch transportation to various adventures .... !!! Great service and pricing ... Would highly recommend this place to stay ....

"Extremely clean and attractive"

27/07/2017

Upon entering the room, we discovered the hotel's resource guide open on one of the beds. That was a welcome sight! The room was extremely clean, comfortable and attractive. The hotel is conveniently located with several restaurants within a short walking distance.

"Hotel needs an update"

2
25/07/2017

This hotel was clean and most everything worked but the room furniture and decor was just very tired. The AC barely cooled the room and when I mentioned it to the front desk was told "they are old units and sometime take awhile to cool". This was all in a hotel costing over $200 a night with taxes. I guess the location of being IN town was what drove the price.

BWRG-Management, Front Office Manager at Best Western Plus Rio Grande Inn, responded to this review
Thank you for taking the time to give us your feedback. We are planning on remodeling the guest rooms this winter and replacing those A/C units as we can. It can be difficult to update some things during our busy time of year but as I said this winter we are updating. Please except my apology for the inconvenience this may have caused.

"Spacious outdated room."

3
24/07/2017

Hotel location was ideal for downtown and train viewing. Staff was very friendly and helpful. Our King suite was spacious but outdated. I was disappointed in the overall up keep of the room. Our jacuzzi tub did not drain, the pull out couch was TERRIBLE (as in you could feel every single spring that held it together.) Our room phone did not work and our fire alarm battery was dead. The breakfast and free cocktail hour we're both highlights of our stay here :)

BWRG-Management, Front Office Manager at Best Western Plus Rio Grande Inn, responded to this review
Thank you for taking the time to give us your feedback and I apologize for not meeting your expectations. We will be remodeling the guest rooms this winter as well as updating those pullout sofas. Again thank you for your feedback and we will address these issues.

23/07/2017

We parked our car on Sunday evening & didn't have to move it till we left Tuesday morning. Everything is within walking distance, downtown Durango. Staff was friendly and gave great recommendations for dinner. Hotel is literally next to the Durango Silverton tracks, so expect to find a fine layer of soot on your car, and everything else. I overheard a lady telling the desk person that the carpet in her room needed a good shampooing-the desk clerk explained that everything is "sooty" but the rooms were nice, beds & pillows comfy. Free drinks for an evening happy hour, and a decent free breakfast in the morning. Over priced, but average for the area.

BWRG-Management, Front Office Manager at Best Western Plus Rio Grande Inn, responded to this review
Thank you for taking the time to give us your feedback. I am glad you enjoyed your stay. We are downtown Durango and in a great place to be able to walk. Unfortunately with that said we are behind the train station and that soot does get into everything as you said a nice layer on your car.

"Great Location in Durango"

22/07/2017

The hotel was clean with lots of amenities. It was close to the Train Station. The staff was very friendly and helpful. Breakfast had a decent selection of items. The pool area was very nice. I do think the price was high.

"OMG. . . Great!!!"

21/07/2017

Left CO at 10 Tuesday. Got to my pre-booked hotel Wednesday at 10pm. Was told they rented my room out due to late check in. Eexhausted, three boys (14, 11,7) in tow. Been up and driving 24 hours. . . Got to the Best Rio Grande. The saint behind the counter doubled as an employee. Literally dropped my I'D and card while getting kids out of the car. Came back in, he had completed paperwork and got me a room 15 steps from my car. Told me checkout was 12 hours later. I sighed. He offered me late check out, free of charge. Oh, and gave me a discount!! I could have kissed him! Got to the AMAZING breakfast in the AM. Every employee was genuinely interested in my stay/breakfast. All offered to help. Clean as a whistle. Tried to get into pool, locked. . . Maintenance man let us in, got towels, and turned on jets in hot tub. Cleaning lady got extra bags for cooler ice. Manager, who I complimented was appreciatve, but not surprised that every employee was well above par! BEST HOTEL EVER. Seriously, 11 stars.

"Very adequate & close to town"

19/07/2017

Was given upgraded room- had jetted tub, but didn't use it. The pool is in the center of hotel and even though we were on 3rd floor could hear noise from pool until it closed at 9pm. Room A/C very noisy. Id had everything we needed, though.

"Great Location. Well maintained establishment"

17/07/2017

The breakfast was awesome and the free internet was useful when needed. I enjoyed the quiet nights and the balcony in the evenings. A lot of Shops near by to look at and nice people around the area. A lot of Hiking Trails near by to walk on or ride a bike on.

"Park your car"

5
15/07/2017

and walk the town. We love hotels where you can just leave the car in the lot for the entire stop on vacation. The train station is a short walk away as are all the restaurants and shops on Main Street. The rooms were clean with lots of room. Parking was right outside our door. Breakfast area was clean and the selection was good. They also have a happy hour with complimentary drinks and an indoor pool. Our patio had two chairs and a table - great for people watching and away from the other rooms and patios so we enjoyed the "smoker friendly" spot.

"Excellent hotel"

04/07/2017

This hotel was located in the heart of downtown Durango. The hotel was great with an indoor swimming pool and hot tub. We made use of the laundry facilities. But the best part was that we were within walking distance of so much fun things to do in Durango. We spent the afternoon and evening just walking around and enjoying ourselves.

"Needs huge remodel"

2
01/07/2017

This hotel is in the best location for it's proximity to the train and town. But the condition of the hotel is poor. It is in need of a huge remodel. The employees were very kind and and went out of their way to accommodate our needs. But for $300 a night, way overpriced.

"Pick Another"

1
28/06/2017

We chose this hotel because it was close to the train station and I'm a big Best Western fan. This was by far the worst hotel we have stayed in. We were given an outside room which bought back memories of years past. I found that at 5 am the side doors are locked so had to walk around the hotel in the dark, I'm a woman that is a bit of a chicken. No coffee in lobby had to walk to back of hotel to breakfast area. The air conditioner ran cold no matter the adjustment and cycled on and off every 15 seconds. My suggestion would be to demolish and build a new hotel. Remodeling didn't help this one.

"Ideal hotel, except poor window air conditioning in rm. on 3rd. Flr. Next to maintanence room , pool/ Jacuzzi was fab."

25/06/2017

Very romantic atmosphere, close to everthing. Great staff & breakfast, desk staff is very welcoming even very late arrivals! They were extremely helpful for referrals to restaurants & attractions , retailers!

"Conveniently located to downtown but needs updating"

3
23/06/2017

We were pleased to be close to the rail station and downtown. However our room was the smallest one we had reserved along our trip in Colorado and Utah but the most expensive. They had a laundry and fitness room but they were not air conditioned. The washer and dryer were FREE to use so that was nice. Downtown Durango has parking meters so be aware of that issue if you need to drive to eat or shop.

BWRG-Management, Front Office Manager at Best Western Plus Rio Grande Inn, responded to this review
Thank you for taking the time to give us your feedback. We will use your feedback to improve accommodations.

20/06/2017

Great location at the edge of town center. Very nice atrium with indoor pool and whirlpool. Room was spacious and comfortable. Small but well equipped fitness center and free laundry facilities. Free cocktail hour in the evening.

"Location, location"

4
19/06/2017

This hotel is located within a five minute walk of the train station which was the reason we chose this lodging. There is an indoor pool for families. There is also a large breakfast area which doubles as the area for happy hour in the evenings. The interior rooms are a bit unusual in that there is no window to view the outside. Otherwise we were pleased with our room and the amenities that were offered.

"Central Durango location-enjoy enchanting train whistle."

18/06/2017

We recently stayed in this hotel for 4 nights, we extended due to our satisfaction. It is located within walking distance to railroad station, main street and all the town town shops and restaurants. The facility was very clean. The pool/hot tub were busy with enjoying families. There is a 2 drink "happy hour" each evening, additionally a very good variety complimentary breakfast.

"Good Location, Caring Staff, Room Issues"

3
15/06/2017

This was our first trip to Durango and decided to stay at the Rio Grande Inn. The location is good for accessing the downtown locations and area attractions. We were greeted professionally and offered early check in. We were also upgraded to a King Suite. Upon getting to our room and unpacking our clothes and travel items we noticed a slightly pungent odor of creosote and tar most likely coming from the newly resurfaced parking area. Our air conditioner was not working properly and when we reported the situation to maintenance, they brought us a portable room fan to help improve air flow. Unfortunately, this did not help, and when coupled with the noise from the fan, the lack of proper air conditioning, the inability of us being able to open our balcony door for fresh air due to the adjacent walk/stairway, parking lot, freeway traffic noise and previously mentioned odors, this made for a very unenjoyable and stressful night. The hotel does have a happy hour where two complementary beverage items are available. The breakfast buffet is okay. The General Manager, Erica Schatz was professional, friendly and caring as she listen to our concerns about our stay at the Rio Grande Inn. She assured us that these issues with the room would be corrected and thanked us for letting her know of the room issues. She also discounted our room and offered us a complimentary night if we ever wanted to return. We thanked her for her professionalism and excellent customer service and told her we would like to come back and give this hotel another chance in the near future. We have stayed at many Best Westerns over the years, and although our experience with the Rio Grande Inn was unsatisfactory, we will give them another try due to the professional, friendly and caring staff.

"Expensive for what you get"

3
15/06/2017

Room was very clean. Beds were comfortable. A/C unit was very noisy. We stayed two nights bookending our trip. First night we had an inside room. No window! And, entry door was glass with only a curtain to provide privacy! Second night was in an outside room. Same noisy old A/C unit. This room had a window, but no screen and it opened onto the walkway for a bunch of other rooms. The staff were helpful and friendly, though the front desk suffers from having to take reservation calls while guests are standing there waiting for service. I witnessed this several times while standing there myself. Shuttle service was efficient with friendly drivers. Very useful as the airport is a half hour drive out of town. Breakfast bar is good with a wide selection. Evening cocktail (included) is a nice touch, though my dad said the wine was terrible. I can report that the local beer was excellent. Price tag of $175+/- was high for what we got. Last thing to note is that the location is right downtown and within an easy walk of the Silverton RR and old Durango shops/restaurants. It wasn't bad, just expensive.

"Room was a Big Closet"

2
10/06/2017

My room, 227, had no window, no balcony, a stain on the linen. It was essentially an oversized closet. A more serious issue was the "step up" at the door jam to enter the room. There is not a normal transition piece at the door jam. Not looking at my feet entering the room I stumbled entering because of the unexpected "step up" . I am surprised BW advertises the place as a Plus. It does have a great swimming pool, and a great breakfast area with a nice selection of breakfast items. The Durango BW Plus has a good location, and serves two complementary drinks in the afternoon. Given all the positives I have listed, my crummy room doesn't make things equal out. My room, 227, should be a housekeeping room rather than a BW Plus guest room.

"Great value and location in Downtown Durango!"

5
09/06/2017

Never thought we'd find reservations at BW so close to the Historical district of Durango. BW Parking was plentiful. We dined at a nearby restaurant which was within walking distance. BW provided two free cocktails per adult and morning Breakfast is included with the room. Indoor pool area is very nicely located adjacent to the lounge area. There BW is clean and the Staff is very welcoming and helpful.

"Somewhat dissapointing"

3
07/06/2017

Nearby rooms not available as requested & reconfirmed. Air conditioner extremely noisy cycling on & off, so if this bothers you, no windows open & it gets very warm. Parking is limited, but good location nearby train. Nice indoor pool for kids.

"Vacation to Durango"

4
07/06/2017

Good location for the Durango/Silverton R.R and the downtown area. Staff were cordial and helpful. Noise from the pool area travels through your door. Finding the Hotel was not as easy as planned, even with the address. Breakfast quality was abundant and the staff was quite nice.

"Comfortable"

4
06/06/2017

Checked in for a stay before riding the train. Was given drink coupons for the manager's reception and a map for directions to our room. Bed was comfortable and room clean, just a bit dated. The air conditioner never cooled the room even though we left it on all night. I would expect better for the price we paid.

"PAVING AND LOCKS"

4
06/06/2017

The paving of the parking lot was not handled well. It should have been coordinated better with the city so guests had a place to park as the task was completed. Our room lock was difficult to open and needed replaced. This was known but the room was rented anyway. The rooms were clean and the staff friendly and helpful. The experience degraded my opinion of the BW chain.

"Great place to stay"

5
05/06/2017

The staff was very attentive. The hotel was kept clean even while under construction/renovation for the upgraded internet services. The staff was professional and respectful. The ladies (Kiley and Erica) at the front desk were very quick to assist with any problem I had. I would highly recommend staying at this Best Western.

"Very spacious hotel. It has a very Open pool area, rooms are nice."

31/05/2017

We stayed two nights, I asked for a balcony room, best room in a long time! The breakfast is good, very nice workers. It is in a very convenient area, downtown Durango is jus a walk away. Parking on one side is small, but more parking in the back. Also has a lovely elevator!

"A Convenient Place to Stay..."

4
31/05/2017

I was in Durango for the Iron Horse Classic Bike Event; and stayed at the Best Western Plus Rio Grande Inn. My request for a first floor room (RM 103) was honored at check-in. The Lobby Staff was quick, attentive and professional. The room was a standard room with 2 queen beds. The room was quiet; no noticeable adjacent noise. It was clean; and well maintained. The 42" (?) Samsung wall mounted flat screen TV was first rate! The bathroom was small but meticulously clean and in good working order. The bath amenities were good! The beds were very clean and comfortable. Good pillow selection. The under-window air conditioner/heat was noisy to me. I turned it off. The hotel offers a free hot self-serve breakfast - scrambled eggs, Canadian bacon; fruits, yogurt, waffles, cereals, oatmeal, juices, coffee, pastries. Good Breakfast!! Complimentary cocktails at happy hour every day!! Biggest inconvenience: The free wifi was down during my visit. It was an inconvenience looking for other ways to connect. Overall, a good night stay.

"We stayed 2 nights"

29/05/2017

On a long road trip to many of the National Parks, etc in Utah, Colorado, Nevada and Arizona, we stayed 2 nights in Durango. Great will town, great hotel and a great train ride to Silverton. The hotel was located near everything, and was very comfortable. The bartender was really efficient and friendly, as were the ladies at breakfast.

"Great location"

4
28/05/2017

Decided to stop here since we had tickets for the Durango and Silverton Railway - its right next door. The hotel was easy to find and had plenty of parking. The room was large and had a good view of the river from the balcony. Breakfast was simple but with so many good breakfast [and dinner] places within 5 minutes walk who cares.

"Great place to stay"

5
27/05/2017

We had a great stay, the location is close to the train and all shopping. Over all our stay was everything I could have wanted and more. The staff was wonderful and gave us tips on the town to make getting around easy and again, we left our car at the hotel and walked to the train. This made the experience much easer. We will use this place again, loved it.

"Just like home"

5
23/05/2017

Rarely do you find a hotel that actually delivers on an experience that they promise will be "just like home". The BW plus Rio Grande does just that. The people are friendly and accommodating, the property is always clean and professionally run. Overall-a great stay every time!!!!

"Perfect hotel, clean, with freindly staff"

5
19/05/2017

On a motorcycle trip thru CO and stopped for 2 nights to avoid snow. The hot tub was a welcome site. Rooms were clean and staff very accommodating. Free drinks each night and full breakfast in the morning. Location is perfect, just a couple blocks from downtown, shopping and restaurants. Would stay again and recommend to anyone in the area. Also we found Durango to be a friendly welcoming community. With the exception of Starbucks, there are no chain stores. As opposed to Aspen, where we left after half an hour. The train museum is wonderful, even when we didn't take the ride. Ate at Ken and Sue's restaurant, it was so good we ate there both nights.

Loved the location as it was within walking distance of the downtown area and the Durango train depot. Even in the midst of remodeling the hotel was clean. The breakfast was great with a great variety of items to choose from.

Hotel is in process of being 'beautified'. However they still offer free breakfast and a free happy hour. Good pool and hot tub. Rooms average and quiet. Near town and restaurants. Friendly, helpful staff.

Thank you for taking the time to give us your feed back. We are in the process of remodeling and will be remodeling in the guest rooms this up coming winter.

Stayed here one night for a Christmas party and we were back in Durango and stayed here again because we liked it so much the first time. Nice hotel! Love the breakfast. Very Clean rooms, right next to the downtown shops. We do like to visit Durango for vacations so we plan on staying here again.

Great location with walking to restaurants, shops and Starbucks! Good selection at breakfast and evening reception as well. Every staff member we encountered was friendly and helpful, especially with restaurantz recommendations. Will book again on our next trip.

Older hotel. Well maintained. Quiet. Exceptional room with terrace right down from the train station. Excellent breakfast with pleasing decor and presentation. Enjoyed the pool and hot tub. This hotel was exceptionally clean.

Elevator out of service , staff sends 70'ish lady to room on second floor with bags. My wife and I helped carry her bags. Our room had very strong mold smell. Informed by staff it was train smell. NOT!

BWRG-Management, Front Office Manager at Best Western Plus Rio Grande Inn, responded to this review
I'm sorry that you were unsatisfied with your stay. We actually had the elevator stopped to clean the windows underneath it and when guest were asking we were starting it back up. I responded to one of your previous surveys and we checked the room for mold and there was none the a/c filter was clogged so we cleaned it and got everything back in order. Thank you for taking the time to give us your feedback.

The room was comfortable and CLEAN. The location was excellent choice for those who want to be close to downtown and yet with a little distance way from the hustle and bustle. The breakfast was good and the evening free happy hour was a nice touch. The pool and hot tub area was well taken care of and the staff was helpful and very friendly.

About what you'd expect from just about any mid-range hotel. Clean and comfortable. Not anything over the top but its an okay hotel for the price. Great location in Durango. Negative. They close the pool and hot tub at 9:00 pm. No exceptions.

BWRG-Management, Front Office Manager at BEST WESTERN PLUS Rio Grande Inn, responded to this review
Thank you so much for taking the time to give us your feedback. We are currently remodeling all of the public spaces and will be remodeling all of the guest room next winter, 2017-2018.

Convenient location, clean, professional staff. We like a balcony and a jacuzzi tub. They also seem to be in the middle of an update, I will miss the old carpet...I love kitch, but am looking forward to staying again.

The hotel was great. The king suite was prefect for my family and I and to have guests hang out during the day. The pool was great but on the cold side. My 2 year old wouldn't get in because it was so cold. I would definitely stay there again.

"A good choice, still, but....."

3
27/03/2017

I stayed here two years ago and returned. Still a good choice. The breakfast is a varied, readily available buffet ( not sure about the waiter service that one reviewer mentioned....is he mistaking this hotel for another?). The staff are all friendly and good at what they do. The room was comfortable, although this time around I did get a room with an adjoining door to the next room, which I hate, as the soundproofing is poor. The two free drinks per person continues and is a really nice touch in this corporately avaricious world. The heaters are noisy and really can't be on when trying to sleep( this is a criticism of BW generally, not just this place), as is the case with the fridges. However, if you turn both off, you sleep pretty well

"Great Hotel and Location"

17/11/2016

I was on a 16 day road trip (Sep 2015) and decided to go to Durango as I liked the name and was close (ish) to Mesa Verde so I picked this hotel as it central. Once I checked in and was notified that there were complimentary drinks available at the bar so I went to my room, dropped my bags off, freshened up and off to the bar I headed. The complimentary drinks are only available up until a certain time hence the 'urgency'. The two girls behind the bar were lovely and filled me in on Durango history, the railway line (which I didn't know about before I turned up) and the places to eat and drink in town. Anyway, back to the hotel itself. My room was great, clean, airy and spacious. I had a partial concrete wall as my view but that didn't bother me and room was still light. The indoor pool looked very inviting but due to my late arrival and bar visit, it wasn't utilised! The hotel is a few minutes walk from the Durango and Silverton Railway station and the main street where the restaurants and bars are located so, for me, is an ideal location. A standard issue buffet breakfast was included and there is also plenty of parking. I did go and book the railway trip that evening and tried to extend my stay but there weren't any vacancies available, which was a shame. Durango is great a place and the trip up to Silverton is worth the visit alone but there is more to the town than just that and this hotel helped on making me want to go back. If you do stay here I recommend T's Smokehouse and Grill which is just around the corner. Enjoy :)

I like this hotel, have stayed here many times. Free drinks, free breakfast, walk to main street, how can you go wrong. Like many if not most hotels in Durango it shows a little age but generally well maintained. Friendly staff, nice pool, I like the balcony rooms.

"Great rooms"

The rooms are comfortable clean and well light with plenty of coffee and a very friendly staff however I would give this 5 Stars if the breakfast had been a little better definitely a good hotel worth staying at

26/10/2016

We were on a 5 day weekend drive and got a room here. They seem to have rooms more readily available than the historic hotels in Durango. Service was fine and the room was fine as well. Pool was being repaired, but wasn't an issue for us. It is convenient walk to Main Street.

"Nice place - Pool Area Closed October 2016"

4
26/10/2016

Overall, I liked this Best Western. Nice Manager's Welcome cocktail hour, friendly employees, excellent breakfast, nice shower, and comfy beds. My only real problem is that the pool area, including hot tub, were closed for renovation. When I booked the room on the phone with the front desk person, I wasn't told this. We were on the road all day driving. I wanted a hot tub to soothe tired muscles. I could have booked at one of many hotels in Durango. We paid more here because of the advertised pool area. Cable TV didn't work in our room, but that was quickly solved with a move to another room.

"All the amenities"

24/10/2016

We always have a good stay at Best Western hotels and this was no exception. The staff are helpful, the comp breakfast is good, the room is comfortable, and this hotel is within walking distance to lovely downtown Durango. We had a wonderful time.

"Great Location "

22/10/2016

This Best Western is next to an off ramp of I40 and about 2 miles from I25. It was an easy walk to the ABQ Trolley and, if you enjoy a stroll, walking distance from Old Albuquerque. The room was just what you would expect from a Best Western. One word of advice...if you order from the $6.00 breakfast, the meal is free. If you order from the regular menu, it gets pricy.

, General Manager at BEST WESTERN PLUS Rio Grande Inn, responded to this review
I am so sorry, but I believe that you have my property in Durango, Colorado confused with the Best Western Rio Grande Inn in Albuquerque, New Mexico as I-40 and I-25 are located 150 miles from my hotel.

Nice motel with all kinds of restaurant choices close by. The receptionist at the desk was sick with a head cold and you could tell that she was under the weather and she went way above the norm trying to help us and making sure that our accommodations were what we wanted. If I make it back to Durango, this motel will have my business.... PS A real good continental breakfast as well

"Great Location!"

07/10/2016

You can't beat the location of this hotel! It is within walking distance of the main street in Durango with lots of restaurants and shops. It is also close to the train station for the Durango and Silverton train. The staff was friendly and helpful. The rooms were a bit dated but still clean and comfortable with refrigerators and microwaves. There is a nice indoor pool and hot tub. The manager offers two free cocktails each evening which everyone seems to enjoy. My only complaint is the small restaurant where complimentary breakfast is provided. While we were there, three bus groups were also staying. The room was way too small to accommodate all the people who were leaving early in the morning. Not only was there not enough room to sit down, they ran out of coffee and food. Other than the breakfast problem, it was a fine place to stay in Durango.

"Wanted to be close to the stream train ride"

5
06/10/2016

We asked for and got a great location for access to the Durango and Silverton Steam train ride. Close to many shops and restaurants Nice room with a view of the mountains. A/c was noisy but as it was good weather. We just turned it off Managers drinks were great, spoke to lots of different people, a good social time, would definitely come back. Spa was nice, washing machines free. Front Desk staff very helpful

"Great night stay"

04/10/2016

Our yearly trek to Colorado to welcome the Fall and we again stayed at our favorite BW Hotel. This property feels like home and the rooms are comfortable and the staff is top drawer. The 2 free cocktails each evening are a fantastic bonus after a fun day in one the most beautiful places on earth. We can walk to many restaurants and shops in the heart of Durango. Fantastic hotel for the family.

"Not the best Best Western"

2
01/10/2016

First off this is not the easiest hotel to find, then when we walked in we one heard three people saying when they went into their rooms they were already occupied. Not a good first impression. For the price we paid for three nights, it was definitely not worth it. The room was in serious need of updating. Did not seem very clean to me. When we came back from dinner and went to our room. They had no lights on in the hallway. It was a very uncomfortable feeling. I complained twice to the front desk and they still never got turned on. Also every time I asked a question it was like I was inconveniencing them. Seems as if the hotel lacks management or they just don't care. Too bad, Durango is a great town with so much activity. I'm sure I well be back next year but I can tell you I will be looking for different accommodations.

"Great location"

4
01/10/2016

We stayed one night here whilst on our road trip , the room was fine if a little dated. Most of the rooms were accessed from the main atrium which included the pool so there was a chlorine odour floating around . Breakfast was thrown in for us , it was basic but fine . Staff were very friendly . We managed to park ok but it did look as though places were sparse . The best thing about this hotel was its location , right next to the steam railway station and just a few minutes from bars / restaurants .

"Good value, plan ahead for a better room. Great pool!"

4
30/09/2016

Weren't sure of our itinerary so waited til midweek to book the room. Glad we did as there were liimited rooms in the town. Definitely recommend planning ahead---we didn't get a balcony or ground floor room, Our room had glass doors to the hallway, almost wonder if it hadn't been a party room??? Anyway only stayed one night and it was clean, quiet, with a great pool, Manager's happy hour generous with the drinks but breakfast ended too early to sample.

"Good Choice for Durange"

29/09/2016

This is not an upscale hotel but it is fun and clean. My room had everything anyone could possibly need including ironing, microwave, refrigerator, coffee/tea maker, hairdryer, comp newspaper, in-room safe, free wifi. It is close to everything and less than a 5 min. walk to the Silverton & Durango train station. They don't have a restaurant for dinner, but there are many within walking distance. The shocker for me was a coupon when I checked in that gave me SEVEN FREE DRINKS at the bar; I was only there 30 hours. :)

29/09/2016

This is a great place to stay in Durango as it is quiet and has balconies to let in the fresh air. Our room had a beautiful view of the mountains We also had a jacuzzi in the bathroom which was nice. We had breakfast free in the hotel and two drinks per day.

"Great Staff"

29/09/2016

The staff at this hotel provide a stellar experience, although the breakfast and the workout facility are lacking, the rooms are clean and comfortable. It is a great location as well. It is close to downtown and many nice restaurants.

28/09/2016

We stay with this hotel each time we come through town, and while the rooms are clean and the breakfast selection is good,my favorite thing about this place is the wonderful staff. They are very personable and makeour stay seem like we are visiting family.

"On our way to train ride"

27/09/2016

This is a very nice hotel. Just off the main area of Durango. Walking distance of the down town. Many nice restaurants in the area. They have a great happy hour with free drinks and snacks. Nice pool and great rooms.

"Good location otherwise not so hot considering it's a BW Plus"

2
23/09/2016

Our tour company booked our group here and the tour director warned us that the hotel is dated and scheduled for a winter renovation. Small entry and the center where there should be a common area is a swimming pool and hot tub so there is no common area to wait for our tours or breakfast and there's a strong chlorine smell. Very small area for breakfast, small breakfast buffet selection and bad coffee. No restaurant and small snack and incidental supply. Our room faced the outside but it was still dark and gloomy and small. Of course the yellowish walls did not help. Only plus is that it is very close to train station and historic downtown. Other hotels are a bit further away from downtown. I would recommend staying here after it's renovation and some positive reviews on Tripadvisor.

"Great place to stay within walking distance of railroad!"

23/09/2016

Good location and wonderful happy hour. Pleasant staff and clean room. No complaints! Breakfast was decent. Wonderful balcony-ask for room 205! Parking good but get there early. Good wifi. Would definitely stay again!

"Don't Dodge This Durango Hotel"

5
23/09/2016

This hotel was recommended by a friend who lives in Durango. We loved the location - walking distance to downtown! Friendly staff. We reported a light bulb missing above the sink and it was fixed immediately. Lots to choose for breakfast, but the space was small. Turned off by the long lines for the Manager's Happy Hour drink special. A little pricey, but we enjoyed our stay.

"Definitely not worth the money and better places are in town"

2
22/09/2016

I booked a suite there and on arrival found it to be a bit shabby. The room smelt stale and damp so obviously hadn't been used for a while. Don't bother trying to have a bath! The water took nearly an hour to fill and was cold at the end. Next, the swimming pool. On our second day after touring the Mesa Verde it would have been nice to have a swim but couldn't get near it for residents having the free cocktail party. The breakfast was awful! cheap hamburgers, eggs and bland coffee all in plastic utensils. As if that wasn't enough the racket from the air conditioning was deafening. I paid $600 for two nights can't believe they had the cheek to charge that. Even the receptionists looked fed up with it all! Avoid if possible.

"noisy"

3
21/09/2016

Nice place to stay if you do not mind getting up at 5:30 am every day. They have a lot of tour buses. We were awaken every morning to the people of the tour groups getting breakfast and talking in the center pool area every day we were there. I paid a very high price for rooms and was told that is were your room is and we do not have anywhere to move you.

"Anniversary weekend"

21/09/2016

Nice, clean hotel. No issues other than slow flushing toilet. The room where breakfast was served was a bit stuffy, needed some air flow. Great location!! The breakfast and happy hour was a nice addition and the staff was quite friendly. The frontdesk staff was pretty indifferent upon check-in and quite friendly and helpful on check-out.

"Don't stay there, poorly managed"

2
19/09/2016

Rooms, not worth the price. $99. would be about it. Breakfast was a JOKE. One person to handle two buses and a car club all leaving at 8:00 AM. They ran out of food. Rooms have a view of cement walls. Had to move rooms, gave us the worst rooms until we complained.

, General Manager at BEST WESTERN PLUS Rio Grande Inn, responded to this review
Dear Mr. Thompson, Truly I appreciate your input on this site, the Best Western Review and your email to me. Your input and management advice have been been most helpful. We are back to our regular staffing of multiple people in breakfast. Again I apologize for your displeasure with the property.

"Absolutely awful!"

14/09/2016

We were here on a bus tour. Having stayed in many best westerns on this trip, this was the worst! The rooms are dark and dreary! The bathroom mirror was difficult to use and had one sink. The rooms definitely need updating. The "bar" looked like a 1950's luncheonette. On the bright side there's free wash and dry available. We were happy to leave!

, General Manager at BEST WESTERN PLUS Rio Grande Inn, responded to this review
Hi Sherry, Thank you for your response. I am so sorry you did not enjoy your stay with us, but hopefully you enjoyed the free cocktails and our downtown location. We know our property is in need of updating which is why we are getting ready to do a large scale renovation of the property. Unfortunately we can't do that during the busiest time of the year as we don't want to inconvenience our guests. Again, I am sorry for your unsatisfactory stay. Hopefully you will have the opportunity to visit in the future and see our updates. Safe travels to you as you finish up your tour.

"Good Location"

03/09/2016

The location is really good, an easy to walk to anything downtown, nice complimentary cocktails at night, pool and hot tub area is very nice and the breakfast was really good. Not the "best" Best Western we have stayed in, beds were not very comfortable, sheets were rough and thin, toilet seat almost fell off and a leg on the patio chair was very loose, which we did let the front desk know. The private patio was nice to sit out on and enjoy the summer storm that rolled in.

, General Manager at BEST WESTERN PLUS Rio Grande Inn, responded to this review
Thank you so much for your review. I appreciate the information you have provided. Definitely want to make sure our rooms are in the best repair possible, so we will get those items (including the sheets) fixed. Those beds!!! Some people love them...some people hate them. Finding beds that meets everyone's preference is definitely a challenge. I am excited to say we are starting a remodel of the property in a few weeks, so I am hoping you will return and maybe we can be closer to one of the "Best" Best Westerns you've stayed at. Again, thank you for your feedback!

A wonderful 2 day get away and a birthday surprise for my daughters 40th birthday, celebrated at the Bar-D Chuck-wagon. We love this area and the Best Western Plus Rio Grande Inn, Durango, COLORADO is a place that we have stayed at many times over the last few years, its location and excellence in quality and service keep us coming back time after time.

"Convenient, clean"

29/08/2016

Stayed only one night before catching plane home. It's right off Main Street of Durango so convenient for the train and walking the downtown. We also got complimentary drinks at their restaurant located behind the pool. Rooms are very nice, clean and up to date. Didn't have a view but didn't request one for only one night. Rates are higher than Comfort Inn outside town but reasonable for location. Would recommend.

This hotel is very nice. Rooms are large and nice. Balconies are very nice. breakfast could be improved. whirlpool tub is a nice touch. You write 200 hundred charactors to get out of this. not sure why they do that and make me prater on.

"Great place"

29/08/2016

We had such a great time, all the staff was great! We recommend you stay here for a great experience! The bar was great, free drinks? yes please. We will be staying here again every time we come to Durango. There is no place better, the beds are super soft and the wifi was sufficient.

"Nice room, great location."

This hotel is located at the end of Main Ave. area and is a quick walk to where everything is going on. The staff is friendly and the room was nice. We will definitely stay there again when we go to visit the college.

"Good place for business travelers"

5
26/08/2016

Employees request this hotel as their first choice of where to stay when having to travel to Durango on business. On Christmas night one employee was stranded due to weather. The hotel clerk was awesome at getting him set up. Making reservations with them is quick and easy and hotel receipts come via email the same day as check out. Great staff.

Perfect place to stay and walk to everything. Train to silverton is right their. Room was very spacious and clean. We had a jacuzzi tub in our room, which I wanted to use. Could not find the turn on until after I got out. It was in the hall lights with. Duh. Over 60 so what do I know. Breakfast area is nice but, same old eggs, (watered down).

"Durango Best Western Rio Grande Inn"

22/08/2016

We spent two nights in this hotel which had an in-room safe, modern bathroom, breakfast included, and a cocktail hour. Our room was quiet, comfortable, and within a short walk to the Durango to Silverton train. We took the train the second day. Beautiful ride up the Animas River canyon. The ride was exceptional!

"Close to everything"

5
22/08/2016

The Best Western Plus Rio Grande Inn, Durango CO was an excellent hotel although a little pricey. This hotel was close to the Durango Silverton Railway Station and walking distance to downtown. Appreciated the Manager's reception each night we were there and the breakfast was good. I was disappointed that we didn't get the mountain view we requested and instead faced a stairway but liked the hotel overall. The front desk staff was very helpful with restaurant suggestions and all proved to be wonderful.

"reliable with great staff"

21/08/2016

This hotel has a fantastic location. It is within walking distance of everything downtown, yet is tucked away in a corner away from the hustle & bustle. The room itself is clean and adequate, but the staff is outstanding. They accommodated our wishes for adjoining rooms, and when we accidentally locked ourselves out, Jeff and Jason came to the rescue. I would definitely stay here again.

"Love Staying Here"

Small and clean hotel. The location is excellent for walking around downtown. The staff, especially Erica, the General Manager, were terrific. They went out of their way to see to every need from bandaids to advice about local eateries. The staff was so great that we will be planning further trips, making sure to stay at this hotel.

"Good location, needs some updating and better cleaning service"

16/08/2016

The good: We stayed in 3 rooms at the Best Western for a wedding. The location is the best, the breakfast was nice. Having fridge in room is nice. It was a good base for the weekend. The not so good: The floors in the rooms were so dirty. Our feet would be black after walking around in room with no shoes on. The carpets were also damp. I'm not sure they ever vacuumed the carpet while we were there. Guessing the black is from the soot from nearby train. But the rooms need to be given good carpet cleaning...and dehumidifiers potentially. The AC unit smelled musty. Our kids wanted to swim in the indoor pool, but was mainly closed for cloudy water. It didn't seem like there was any sort of circulation to the pool. Needs update.

, General Manager at BEST WESTERN PLUS Rio Grande Inn, responded to this review
Thank you for your feedback both positive and negative. We will be starting a renovation this fall/winter which will include our pool, carpeting and all public areas. Again, I appreciate your feedback and hope you will give us another try in the future.

"Nice Hotel Closest to the Train Station"

4
12/08/2016

Picked this hotel mainly because of its proximity to the historic train station. Arrived in the morning after a long drive, parked our car at the hotel (help by a friendly staff), walked 5 minutes to the train station just in time for the ride to Silverton. Checked in at the hotel when we were back in Durango. Enjoyed the stroll down the old town the next morning after breakfast. Room was quite nice, spacious and well equipped. Graet breakfast with lots of varieties. Wifi was fast. Helpful, courteous staff. Would we stay again? Yes if the rate remains competitive (stayed Oct 2 years back).

"Dated Overpriced Hotel"

1
10/08/2016

My husband and I have been coming here over a twenty year period and I have brought family members and hiking groups. The hotel has sunk to a new low. The people working at the front desk offered two bad options when we arrived... a downstairs room next to a running diesel truck and a huge passenger bus or a dank smelly room with a moldy air conditioner. I looked at another room and it was equally unappealing. The bottom line is that the owners do not care. They can charge high prices for a very old 1970s style hotel. It's probably difficult to find workers for the low wages they pay here. I recommend staying elsewhere.

, General Manager at BEST WESTERN PLUS Rio Grande Inn, responded to this review
Dear Ms. Wood. I am sorry your stay was not as pleasant as previous stays. We were in a sold out situation, so unfortunately we had limited options for rooms. I do recall my front desk agent offering to assist you with finding accommodations elsewhere as we understood your unhappiness. We are getting ready to do a large scale remodel this fall/winter, so the hotel will be updated very soon.

"DATED & RUNDOWN & VERY EXPENSIVE.... BUT GOOD LOCATION"

2
09/08/2016

This location gets a lot of hype in other reviews but you'll see some recent ones, including this one, that reveal the truth....This place is just not very good at all. Property in very serious need of renovation (they informed us later that some degree of remodeling is to happen this fall/winter). It's dark, dingy, dirty and very dated. Old fashioned wall-mount AC runs loudly and constantly and works only moderately well. It's expensive. Really expensive when you see the amenities and property. They get away with it due to their fantastic central location....close to the train and reasonable walking distance to most of Durango's fantastic downtown area. Manager's Reception includes (2) free drinks per person. Bartenders are friendly and capable. Held in the same room as free breakfast......which is nothing short of horrible. Avoid the breakfast at all costs. Mystery meats, powdered eggs....you get the drift. Pool area just reeks but guess that's normal as it's enclosed and surrounded by rooms. Our room faced the outside and other guests we talked to that had inside-facing rooms said the stench from the pool never ended. Carpet is ancient and filthy. Rooms are dark. Shower water pressure very poor. Beds are acceptable, at best. They furnish a parking pass and their parking lot is big and easily accessible. The folks at the front desk seem very engaged and friendly. They replied to our Best Western requested review with the info related to upcoming remodeling. For their sake, we sincerely hope it's an entire renovation. There's a LOT of other choices in downtown Durango for housing. Do your homework and pick another property until this one gets fully remodeled.

"Horrible rooms, good location"

2
08/08/2016

Closed to the station and few minutes far from the shopping area, the hotel is old and needs a complete restructuring. The Room was small and poorly equipped. Very noisy air conditioning (impossible to sleep...). Poor and with very limited free breakfast. Best options are available in Durango at the same price.

, General Manager at BEST WESTERN PLUS Rio Grande Inn, responded to this review
Thank you for your feedback. We are going to be doing a large scale renovation to the property this fall/winter. The breakfast is also being revamped. I hope you will consider staying with us in the future.

06/08/2016

This was a very nice place to stay for our visit to Durango. The location was right downtown so we could walk to shop and eat. The hotel is a block or so off the main street on a dead end away from the traffic of downtown. We definitely would stay there again.

"Durango Stay"

06/08/2016

We found the accommodations to be more than we expected. Besides a very good hot buffet breakfast each morning, there was a complimentary cocktail each night for the guests. The hot tub and pool were very inviting and well kept. The location, for us was outstanding as we scheduled an early train ride and it was right next to downtown with all its shops and restaurants.

"So happy we stopped here!"

04/08/2016

We drove into town without making a plan, and stopped here. Great location a bit away from the main stretch of town, but easy walking to town. We were looking for a pool, and got free drink coupons too! The hotel has a great indoor outdoor feel, with the pool inside in the center. The front desk staff were very friendly and helpful.

With a couple of corrections this property could rate a 5! Pros: Conveniently located within walking distance of downtown on a dead end between the train and another property. Check in was efficient. Reserved a non-smoking, double queen room. Room was on ground floor directly outside office at front of hotel. Property provided coupons for drinks at happy hour. the bar tender, Jamie, was the best! She gave us great information on things to do, where to eat, etc. Very friendly and upbeat! Cons: Unfortunately the Best western not only allows smoking right outside the front door, but encourages it through the placement of benches and cigarette disposal containers. Right. Outside. My. Door. So, even though my room was nonsmoking the wall mounted air conditioning unit brought the smell of cigarettes continually into the room, and whenever we arrived or left our room we were surrounded by cigarette smoke. I would have asked for another room but we had already settled in for the evening when I first noticed the smoke smell. It was actually so strong at times I was afraid we might be charged for smoking in our room! Breakfast is advertised until 9:30 in the morning. We arrived at 9:05 to find most items empty and the staff cleaning up. When I asked about preparing additional food for us the reply was that they were already cleaning up. I pointed out that they were supposed to serve breakfast until 9:30 not 9:00 I was met with blank stares. No effort was made to find or fix additional items, AND the staff continued to remove what little was remaining before we could eat! I mentioned both of these CONS to the front desk when we checked out. The desk personnel were not only unapologetic they tried to claim that no one was supposed to smoke in front of the property, that smoking was prohibited there! Prohibited?!! Yeah right. that's why there are no "No Smoking" signs posted and benches are placed right next to cigarette disposal units! That SCREAMS "No Smoking"! As to the lack of breakfast items a half an hour before breakfast was officially to end, the front desk merely shrugged it off! End result: I cannot recommend this property and only because of the location and room itself can I give it an "Average" rating. Stay somewhere else or ask for an inside room and get to breakfast early!

This hotel is fantastic. We come up every year for the past four years and stay at this hotel and truly enjoy ourselves. They have a great breakfast in the morning and the staff are very accommodating, friendly and downright wonderful. Prices are not too bad especially during December where other places jack up their prices. The indoor pool is always clean and lots of fun for the kids. They have a bar for adults and the staff are friendly and pour good drinks. I highly recommend staying here.

We staged our backpacking trip here, with me driving in from Denver and then us taking the Durango/Silverton train to Needleton the next morning. Loved the location - great spot and good for walking the main strip. Make sure to check the route before arriving - the most obvious street (2nd Ave) is one-way only at the main crossroads, but becomes two-way. Turn south(ish) at College/Main, then left onto 5th St, then right onto 2nd Ave. Parking seemed good - I got a spot right along 2nd Ave, and didn't even look around the corner. My main priority was rest and sleep, and this hotel was good for that. I couldn't get the room cold enough for whatever reason, but things worked out. I was hoping to take a bath to rest my leg muscles, but the tub wasn't deep enough. Breakfast was terrific but super crowded when it opened at 6:30. Lots of people getting ready for the earlier (8am) train, it would seem. I got there right at 6:30, and it was packed, so people had clearly been staking it out. All in all, I'd recommend this hotel - good place to stay, and not too expensive given market prices.

This hotel is in a great location. Right next to the train station and near downtown. A deer walked through the property on the days we stayed which was something not expected. The only complaint was the internet service. It did not work when we checked in and was in and out our entire trip.

If you are looking for a place to crash and grab a quick breakfast; before you head out and see the sights in and around Durango, then this place works well. Walking distance to the town and attractions is a big plus. Visited with friends we hadn't seen in a while, and we had kids of different ages. Little kids loved the pool, teens and tweens roamed Durango playing Pokemon Go in the off hours. Adults enjoyed happy hour (nice surprise: they give you a couple of happy hour drinks a night/adult). Not a lot of places to chill out at the hotel at the end of the day. We settled on a picnic table out back with a view of the Animas River (plus the highway) - but we made due and had fun anyway. Of the places I've chosen in Durango, I like this one the best, though will investigate other in-town options. Definitely sold on that.

"A great choice"

This hotel is close to the Durango Silverton train station and within walking distance of a downtown area. The staff is extremely accommodating and even let us leave a large cooler and a provision box in their office when we were overnight in Silverton. We had two different rooms while we were there, and both were roomy and comfortable. Our only complaint is not with only this hotel but with many others - why are the rooms so dimly lit? Granted, we want to rest and relax in the room, but it would be nice to have at least one light bright enough to read a road map. If we are ever in Durango again, we will definitely stay here.

This is a good place to stay for access to the train and walking distance to store and restaurants. Breakfast needs an upgrade (more variety of hot items). Nice pool for kids and cocktail hour was decent.

Best Western Plus Rio Grande Inn is an excellent place to stay in Durango. The rooms are clean and comfortable. Best of all, it is a very short, easy walk to the Durango-Silverton Narrow Gauge Train station. Staff is friendly and helpful. No problems with parking. The kids will love the indoor pool.

The staff were friendly and accomadating. The building is close to shopping and the Silverton Durango train. The rooms are spacious clean, and the beds are comfortable. We were not sure what to expect from the hotels on our trip. The staff and the rooms were far above our expectations. Erika, Jeff M., Keith, and David were very accomadating and made sure we were satisfied with this Inn. The indoor pool is clean and well cared for. The breakfast staff were polite and kept the food fresh. The bar tender no matter how busy was polite and served what you asked for. The one thing we liked the best was the staff and their kindness. The worst is that we could not stay longer at this Inn.

"This is a very nice hotels with a large pool and bar in the atrium center."

Close to everything downtown. Nice whirlpool and pool. The room was more like a suite older but very comfortable. Comes with breakfast and free drinks at happy hour. Very nice staff. This is my second stay in a month, so yes I liked it!

Have stayed at Rio Grande Inn multiple times. Excellent service, room quality and the location cannot be beat. Rooms with a balcony are especially enjoyable for morning coffee or to watch the river. Have brought friends here and they feel the same.

"Ok so it's not going to be 5* but ..."

It's centrally located yet quiet and comfortable. It doesn't do food (except a fair breakfast) but the nearest place to eat is 100 ft away. The rooms are clean and comfortable, ours was huge with a mini decking. It gives two complimentary cocktails per person per night (or it did for us). And there's a large indoor pool and hot tub - what's not to like?

As others have commented, it is a little pricey, but staying here during summer tourist season, that's to be expected. The 3-floor hotel is a short walk to the D&S railroad and other shops & restaurants. Anyway, we had a very comfortable stay in a clean and pleasant facility. Small lobby w helpful, friendly staff. Free, hot breakfast offerings were always scrambled eggs, sausage, oatmeal with the ability to make your own waffles; pastries, muffins, bread, bagels, yogurt, coffee, juice, cereal, too. Breakfast room was small so it crowded easily. While staff constantly restocked things they didn't really interact with the guests. This place also offers a reception w free drinks in the same space but we never made back to the hotel in time to experience that. There is also a small swimming pool and a hot tub pool in the middle courtyard of the building. There is also a small fitness center downstairs, and business center area on our floor; free wifi. Some rooms had an outdoor balcony w metal table and 2 little chairs. Our room just fit 2 double beds, arm chair, microwave, fridge, flat screen TV, closet w ironing board, night stand, folding luggage shelf, table & office chair. The only "negative" comment was the slow elevator, but overall we had a very nice stay!

"Great location, but over priced"

14/07/2016

The consensus on this hotel is great location, which I agree with. I don't think this merits the price of over $200. The room is average and amenities are OK. The free happy hour was good but being next to the indoor pool, it smelled of chlorine. The bed was probably the best thing about the room and was extremely comfortable. We would stay here again if the price was adjusted down.

This hotel is tucked back in a corner in downtown durango... very cute place.. at night they give the adults a free drink in the lounge.. breakfast is good eggs sausage and very thing else that has to do with breakfast..kinda pricey but worth it.. you can walk everywhere downtown from hotel... my kids (3,7) loved the indoor pool n hot tub... we had a great stay...

Hotel is in a great location. Lots of shops and Restaurants in the area. A little hard to get to because of the one way roads. Rooms are older, but clean and comfortable. Staff is very helpful and friendly. Will stay here again!

11/07/2016

There's a lot to like about this hotel. Location is great, just behind the main street and the train station, which most people are probably going to. Rooms are large and well equipped, everything clean, staff are friendly and helpful. The pool is great, just what you want after a hot day. No worries about parking. Free drinks come with the deal as does breakfast which is ok. Some observations: The multi-purpose breakfast room isn't nice, too small, badly lit, not a good start to the day. The same room serves as the bar, for which it is even less suitable. All the rooms have a really nice balcony which would be great to sit out in, but they only have two horrible little uncomfortable metal chairs. The upshot is that there is no place in the hotel to sit around and enjoy a drink or a coffee other than the sofa in your room. Quite an omission.

"Good location but that's it....."

Great location to everything in Durango...you can park here and walk everywhere else or take the trolley. We had stayed here previously 4 years ago and the property has deteriorated since then but the rates are still too high! We chose location based on our previous great experience but will not return. Our room was at the end of the hall next to an exterior propped open door - our room was extremely warm and the A/C never cooled the room. We were unable to get another room. Staff is very disinterested about customer service. After a lengthy discussion, we were able to obtain a 10% discount off the rate but after sweating all night it was not worth it. Parking is a challenge. The breakfast choices were awful and my husband would not eat. The staff were so busy talking they never refilled the items. One of the few positives is the hose and bike rags at the bike wash. Next time we are in the area, we will not stay here. As a BW Rewards member, we expect more, especially when the rate is $200plus per night.

"Rooms are a major concern when staying at this hotel."

2
10/07/2016

If you stay at this hotel, the big risk factor is the type of room you get. Our first room had a window that faced a brick wall, so it felt like we were in a prison. The next day the receptionist kindly moved us into a room with a window that faced outside, but the room used to be a smoking room, so it smelled awful. We were tired of switching rooms, so we just sucked it up. Breakfast was not great, but they did have waffles. Eggs and sausage were questionable. The positives were the complementary happy hour, pool, and the location. Also appreciated the free laundry service as we had been camping. The staff was okay as well.

"Ok, but getting worse"

09/07/2016

Stayed here a couple of times while passing through. Located in the outskirts of town but still within walking distance to main street. It used to be ok, but this time service was slow and the room felt dirty. For $200+ a night I don't expect dirty footprints on the sheets... Will go somewhere else from now on.

Frequented this hotel when visiting Durango for several years. Used to enjoy the convenience of the proximity to Main Street. I have noticed how the place deteriorated in the last couple of years... But last night was the turning point - the last stay at this place! The place is Dirty, Smelly and to expensive for it! Will not stay there again!!!

"Great location, hotel could use an update"

06/07/2016

Stayed at the Best Western Plus Rio Grande Inn from 7/1 to 7/6. I had read a number of reviews both good and bad, so I really didn't know what to expect! Our family of 4 travels quite often and we usually stay in hotels with suites for more room. The Good The hotel is extremely well situated. We were no more than a 15 minute walk from anything we wanted to see do and eat in town. Didn't have to cross any super busy streets which is always good with kids! The beds were very comfortable, I would guess the mattresses were fairly new Free drinks! I must say, free drinks make everything better. 2 per day woohoo! The Average The room itself was small. 2 adults and 2 kids in a room with 2 queen beds is a tight fit. The hotel screams of the 1970's. White paint and grey carpeting can't cover the dark wool and dated furnishings. Odd room. We had quite an odd room that didn't have any exterior Windows. The doors to the room were glass and covered with a blackout curtain. And the only other window in our room looked out at a hallway!? Pool in the middle of the hotel. Just weird. Almost all rooms look out onto the indoor pool. I didn't notice a strong chlorine smell as others noted, but the pool area is not quiet until around 9pm. And the pool is not heated (at least in July) Breakfast is nothing special. But I must note, Best Western please remove the picture of Donuts hat you have in your website. My kids were disappointed every single day that there were NO donuts! And according to staff, never have been! But there are pastries, muffins, microwaves eggs and sausage, cereals and oatmeal to eat! The staff. Nothing over the top or special. Some concerns we had were never addressed (toilet running all the time and mildew smell). But they seemed friendly and knowledgeable if at times somewhat disinterested. The Bad Nothing really!

I'll keep it brief: a recent 5 night stay in June at the Best Western Plus to start a 9 day San Juan Mountains area road trip was nothing short of Outstanding. An unusually Hot period, the staff was informative, pleasant, attentive, 1st class during some testy conditions. Just well run-plain and simple.

04/07/2016

This is a sufficient hotel, but it is in desperate need of renovation. The room was really worn and depressing. The pool was ok. My kids enjoyed it. Thankfully, we spent very little time in the hotel with the all-day train adventure, so it was manageable. I would not stay here again if given the choice.

This hotel could have been rated Very Good if it hadn't been for the very poor internet connection and the terrible draft from the placement of the air conditioner. Both fix able if management chooses to do so.

01/07/2016

This was a one night stay while visiting friends in the area. I can't speak for all the rooms as mine was a first floor "paraplegic equipped" room (photos included). It was on the corner of the building, right outside the arrival/departure area, so you have a lot of conversation going on at certain hours. The room has an in-room a/c that is loud, so cool the room and then turn it off to sleep. The hotel facilities (pool and hot tub) and easily accessible and indoors. The bar and breakfast area are very nice and provide a nice atmosphere to linger and talk. I found the price expensive compared to other places I've stayed. I would do more research before booking again. I am a BW Rewards member.

26/06/2016

We stayed here two nights, a little hard to find but we did it. The location is great, close to everything....withing walking distance to many shops, sites and restaurants . Our first room was great until we opened the curtains, our balcony had a view of the stairs. And, those said stairs, had kids running up an down them. We love kids, we have 8 grandchildren... and they make noise!!! No problem, we good another room where we sat outside and enjoyed the quietness of our balcony and view.

Would highly recommend this hotel. Great place with friendly staff. A great location. Pool and spa area is fantastic and very clean. The hotel has a great view of the surroundings and is located close to town and within walking distance to the train which takes you to Silverton.

"Excellent service and good value"

24/06/2016

We stayed at this hotel for 3 nights with a group of 34 friends in a car club. The service from the staff was excellent. They provided us with hoses, etc. to wash our cars and a private area to park. Breakfast was included as well as happy hour for 2 hours each day in which we were allowed 2 drinks each. After 2, the drinks were cheap. To sum it up, it was a great experience and I would recommend this hotel.

"I want my money back!!"

22/06/2016

We checked out of this hotel yesterday morning. Our original reservation was for 3 days. We left after one day and it couldn't have been faster. I want to let TA readers know that I read every review before booking this hotel and was familiar with the location as I had visited Durango several time before. I felt certain, because of the positive reviews, that we had made the right choice. We usually stay at The Strater, but it was booked during the time we wanted to visit. The most important comment I can make is, if this hotel would have been $79.00 a night, I would have had no reason to complain. It was over $200 per night and this is the reason I am so angry. For that price, we deserved better! First, we originally reserved a King room. When we arrived, we discovered that our room was in front of an indoor pool. The hotel common area was dark, hot and smelled of strong chlorine. The decor was like stepping into the 1980's. The bar/breakfast room had absolutely no appeal with it's dated look and we passed on both the free drinks and breakfast. I knew we wouldn't get any rest with families and children using the pool outside our door. So I asked for a quiet room and the front desk complied by moving us to a 3rd floor room in the back of the hotel. The hotel layout is confusing and difficult to figure out. The elevator takes forever and once at our door, we discovered that our cards did not work. We had to return to the front desk to get this corrected. Honest mistake as the cards were programmed for the first room, but annoying. Once inside our dark, dingy double bed room, we noticed the loud hum of the old wall unit a/c unit. I didn't think this would be a problem until later. I'll give this hotel one plus, it is in a good location. After walking a couple of blocks, you find yourself on main street. After sightseeing all day, we returned to the room to get a good nights sleep before our 4 am wakeup. This was not to be. Guests adjacent to us slammed the doors all night. Our room literally shook each time these doors slammed. The a/c never cooled the room. This is despite being turned down to 58 degrees and turning the energy saver button off. The common areas of the hotel were just as hot. I could not sleep in the bed nearest the bathroom because It was so hot. I ended up sitting in the chair next to the a/c unit and tried to get some rest. My husband spent the night in a fetal position closest to the a/c unit to try and get some relief. There was no point in calling maintenance. The units are old and inefficient. Between the slamming doors, no a/c and the old lumpy mattresses and neck cracker pillows, we had the most miserable night of our vacation. Let me preface this by saying, this was the end of our vacation. We had spent 7 other days in 2 enjoyable hotels in Santa Fe and Telluride (also, TA picks). Once up at 4 am, I just wanted to get a hot shower and get out of the room. In the shower, the drain was not emptying and filled up to about 2 feet of water. That was pleasant!! NOT! Then, when I attempted to use the hair dryer BW provides, it was so old and blazing hot, my hair was literally fried after using it. Best Western should be ashamed to include this hotel in their chain. It needs to be torn down and rebuilt or sold to a Mom and Pop who charge $79.00 for a flophouse.

20/06/2016

The hotel was nice. We used it because it was close to the train station. It was hard for the GPS to find because the town recently changed 2nd Ave to one way so we had to figure out how to get to the hotel without the GPS. Other than that we had a good stay.

Other than a glitch at check-in and a request denied...we just loved our stay at BWRG Inn in Durango. A very well maintained facility and obviously well managed facility. The location is very convenient to downtown and the Durango Train. Would highly recommend for comfort, convenience and value. Best margarita in town at their bar. Have stayed there before several times with my group of skiers and we have never had any issues with the service or the facility. It's just as nice in the Summer as in the Winter.

I like Best Westerns and this one doesn't disappoint. All the staff were very friendly and helpful, advising on good restaurants etc. We got vouchers for 2 free drinks each night of our stay !! Can't fault anything about this hotel and would definitely return. Durango is a beautiful old 'western' town with lots of characture. And the narrow gauge railroad is not to be missed.

The only good thing about this hotel is their location. Rooms are dark and depressing. Breakfast choices are okay. The free drinks at night are a nice touch. Booked through AAA with the impression that I was to have a balcony. Was told no and was not upgraded. The hotel is very old and definitely not worth the price that they charge.

06/06/2016

Location very good for train and downtown.Staff very friendly. Inn dated and not my style, probably good for families. Common area is the atrium in the center with swimming pool. Can be noisy, and chlorine smell. View out window was adjoining building. Area for breakfast and happy hour was glass enclosed off pool, somewhat dark, tight, and dingy. Not sure, even with remodeling, that you can remedy my negatives.

"Best location in town"

4
03/06/2016

We picked this hotel due to its proximity to the Silverton Train. After arriving, we also found it is a perfect place for visiting the whole of down town. Traffic is very heavy in this little place of heaven so it was nice to be able to park the car and walk everywhere we wanted to go. When we went to our room, there was a smell of smoke. We reported it to the manager and she immediately switched us to an upgraded room. There is a complimentary laundromat on site which was a very pleasant surprise. The only drawback to the hotel is the elevator was very slow and at one point, with three people and luggage, it would not move. I had to get off with my suitcase so the other two people could use it. The breakfast was also not very appetizing or appealing to the eye. However, we would not hesitate to stay here again.

"Good and not so good..."

3
01/06/2016

Good points: Location; Cleanliness; Continental breakfast. Strong wi-fi; Shuttle van from airport. Not so good points: Gloomy room with a view of a cement wall. (2nd floor); Indifferent reception staff. Confusing directional signs to rooms. Pervasive smell of chlorine from central indoor pool.

"Excellent location for walking around downtown and near the train station"

4
01/06/2016

Not only is this hotel in a great location, the staff are friendly. Equally important, the bed comfort is great (that's very important to me). The only thing missing that I would like to have had is breakfast included with the room. But, I have to say that other people may love the free (alcoholic) drink coupons (I think we got one coupon per person per day). This place is great and we try to get a room there for each trip we take to Durango.

"Station-ary"

2
31/05/2016

This hotel is only a stone's throw from the station servicing the Durango to Silverton scenic railroad. This is good, because it means the hotel is also embedded in Durango's interesting and lively city center. Despite its proximity to the railroad station, however, the hotel, itself, is stationary. It is faded and dated. The front desk staff are unfriendly and unhelpful. All rooms surround a central, three story atrium. Between 9 am and 9 pm when the atrium pool is open and atrium tables serve hotel patrons using the hotel's bar, sounds of yelling children and clinking cocktail glasses echo endlessly off atrium walls. Our room entryway is a strange double door, each door housing a 3/4 length window pane. Window curtains have to be let down for privacy but even then light from the atrium leaks into the room. The room's past, I think, must have been as a dentist's office. The bath and bed are fine, although the light switch for the bath is located outside of it on the wall of the bedroom about five feet from the bathroom door: a visit to the bathroom at night results in light flooding into the bedroom. The complimentary breakfast is OK: real eggs and sausage are available. Ticket stubs handed out at the front desk can be redeemed for cocktails, although the bar has a limited supply of beverage brands. We won't soon return to this hotel, especially at its unjustifiably high room rental rates.

"Excellent Location"

3
27/05/2016

This is an older property, but is fairly clean, well kept, and in an excellent location. The rooms around the pool have a distinct chlorine smell, so, if, you don't like that, ask for an outside room. We had a king room that was spacious and comfortable. The breakfast was good, with adequate protein items as well as the usual overload of sugary things. I didn't like the fact that the towels were stored over the toilet-yuck! That's a pet peeve of mine-just not sanitary. There was a little mold around the tub-would have been nice if it were cleaner.

"A good place to stay"

4
24/05/2016

We stayed for 2 nights while touring southwestern Colorado and it was a well located near downtown Durango. The room was very large with a balcony. The hotel is a little older, but in the process of a remodeling, so I expect it will be updated soon. Breakfast was the usual fare. The hotel also offered a complimentary happy hour each evening and that was a nice touch. Staff was helpful and parking was easy. You could walk to local restaurants. We would stay there again.

"Very helpful staff and great location."

5
24/05/2016

I really liked this hotel, very nice and top notch staff. Plus you get tickets for 2 free happy hour drinks per night stayed (not just cheap drinks, but whatever you'd like!). The breakfast was very good and the dining area (which is also the bar in the evenings) was super clean. The wonderfully helpful staff recommended several local spots for dinner that did not disappoint (Steamworks and The Ore House). The hotel is in easy walking distance of these places as well as the train that runs to Silverton each day (we did the train trip and it is AWESOME). Just a great, clean place to stay!

"Great location, indoor atrium pool"

4
22/05/2016

The location is great, a short walk from the train, restaurants and shopping. The room was clean and service was good. The indoor atrium pool can be noisy and lends a smell of pool chlorine to the indoor space. Generally, a good place to stay in Durango.

"Pretty good place, very clean"

21/05/2016

Solid hotel, as usual from Best Western. Clean room, quiet room. Good parking, friendly staff. No issues at all. We moved at 1am from a nasty Spanish place down the street. I reviewed it also. Staff was fast and helpful getting us moved. It was late and we were so tired.

"Great Location and price in Downtown Durango"

5
19/05/2016

This Inn is located at the heart of Durango's downtown, backing their fabled Train Depot and with walking distance to all the downtown eating and shopping places along Main Street. The place is a bit old but very well-kept, with a great staff and well appointed guest rooms. It also offers a nice full breakfast and Happy hour drinks each evening, as a complementary treat to guest. It has an indoor heated pool and hot tub, for those winter days and ski season visitors. Lastly, the price is really reasonable for such good location in town.

We travel to Durango two or three times a year and we stay at this hotel every trip. It is located at the end of the downtown area, so all the good dining and shopping are just outside your doorstep. Even though it is close to downtown, it is away from the tourist traffic, so it is quiet. They have a complimentary breakfast which is just ordinary but good. In the evenings, they also have a happy hour (2 free drinks per adult). The indoor pool and hot tub are nice and clean. We have found their service to always be superb and the rooms are spacious and clean (with free wifi). And you cannot beat the location!

Hotel in good location, however the breakfast was not very good at all. No variety in bagels, toast, and greasy sausage patties. Hotel as indoor pool and hot tub which was nice. Staff was very friendly and helpful.

"Aesthetically pleasing + functional"

15/05/2016

This is the most aesthetically pleasing + functional BW we have ever stayed at. The pool size was adequate, Water temp perfect. So pleasant to be able to see the pool + hot tub on the way to and from every room. Stairway exits were conveniently located. Breakfast layout and choices were excellent. The 2 complementary drinks offered for 2 hour every night were a real treat.

"Had to rate the staff"

12/05/2016

We stayed next door but I had to review the staff at this hotel. We use Best Western a lot and for some reason my account would not work with a UK postcode and USA IP address. I needed to book hotels in Chinle and Globe and the wonderful staff on the desk were patient enough to ring both hotels and do my bookings for me.

"What an unexpected surprise! A very very nice hotel next to everything downtown"

Great fast check in, very clean interior, interior atrium pool and whirl pool, with a bar and dining. This is a gem of hotel, with clean new rooms, views from the room not so good, but just outside are the mountains. Free happy hour and breakfast is included. Business computer area on all floors. Very nice and well priced. Walking distance to all Durango has to offer. Free parking.

BWRG-Management, Manager at BEST WESTERN PLUS Rio Grande Inn, responded to this review
I'm glad you enjoyed your stay and our hotel. We're far enough in downtown for all the convenience but just far enough outside to be away from all the noise. We'll see you during your next trip to Durango. Keith Cressy Evening Manager 970-385-4980

"Close to beautiful downtown Durango"

02/05/2016

We really enjoyed our stay at the Best Western Rio Grande. It was close to all downtown amenities in Durango. The bed was comfortable and the room was clean. Hotel staff was friendly and there were free drinks on at check-in. The only problem we encountered was there was not enough breakfast to serve the customers with still 1 hour left in the breakfast service.

BWRG-Management, Manager at BEST WESTERN PLUS Rio Grande Inn, responded to this review
I'm so sorry for the shortage in breakfast during your stay. We had an unfortunate delay in shipping during a very busy weekend that forced us to make the best out of what we could get in such short notice. I hope you'll give us another chance the next time you're in Durango Keith Cressy Evening Manager 970-385-4980

"Enjoyable facility"

26/04/2016

Enjoyed our stay at this hotel. Staff was friendly. Facility clean. At the edge of downtown Durango so able to walk around and enjoy the city in the evening. Only draw back was hearing another couple during the night. Not sure if they were in the hall or the room next door. Nice indoor pool and community hot tub. Decent breakfast.

BWRG-Management, Manager at BEST WESTERN PLUS Rio Grande Inn, responded to this review
I'm sorry for the noise caused during your stay. You can always give the front desk a call for any noise complaints and they'll take care of it right away. Keith Cressy Evening Manager 970-385-4980

First time staying at this hotel in Durango, Colorado. We chose it as it was close to where friends that we were meeting were staying and there was a restaurant close by that we all wanted to eat at for dinner. The hotel was a good experience. The staff was knowledgeable and professional. My wife especially liked the indoor swimming pool and I liked the complimentary lounge during the evening hours. The room was well appointed and the bed was very comfortable (slept like a baby). Would definitely recommend it to others and stay there again ourselves.

My daughter and I stayed here and had a great weekend. The hotel is in a FANTASTIC location. Walking distance to historic downtown Durango and restaurants. Our room looked out over the Animas and mountainous terrain. The staff were courteous and helpful, the room was immaculate, and very comfy beds. Will stay there again next year.

"Durango meltdown"

3
18/04/2016

My wife and I went to the Durango Bluegrass Meltdown. That was great, not so much with hotel. I stay in Drurys a lot and regardless of what is paid there should be high level service and style. Breakfast was terrible, thin watery oatmeal, bag of eggs microwaved isn't my idea of breakfast. Best Western should be high quality, not like this

16/04/2016

We were very pleased with this hotel. The outside decor fit in to the local a atmosphere. Inside the hotel was nice. The room was clean and relaxing. The bed was firm without any of the back aching hardness often found in hotel rooms. We liked the fact that the old downtown area and the rail station were a short walk away. We will certainly return. And when we do, we will stay at this hotel.

This is my fourth year I have stayed at this location the staff are friendly and accommodations are nice. Anytime I have had an issue with my accommodations the staff fixed it immediately. The indoor pool and hot tub are great. The breakfast and the two free drinks during happy hour are awesome. This hotel is in an excellent location with excellent access to Main Street where the majority of the restaurants are. Shopping is all along Main Street. Everyone loves a good hot shower in the morning and the water pressure is excellent. As long as this establishment continues to operate the same j will continue to stay here.

Stayed for one night, clean room, great pool and morning breakfast was good with decent selection. Is close to town would definitely stay here again when in the area. Was glad had a room on the inside, did not realize they do have ones with outside door access which I would not like. The only downfall to this hotel is that the pool is only open from 9am to 9pm which I can understand because of the unique set up that it is in the middle of all the rooms and would be to noisy.

BWRG-Management, Manager at BEST WESTERN PLUS Rio Grande Inn, responded to this review

27/03/2016

After staying at a not so great place we checked TA and found this in our price range and location. I got a way better deal in person than booking online through TA. Located right downtown easy to walk to everything. Train is short walk away. We got a poolside room (awesome for the kids!) We got 2 free drinks at their "cocktail lounge" Drinks were decent. I would suggest running the cocktail time a bit longer like 9 instead of 5:30-7:30. If you check in at 7 unpack and get down there you have 5 min to pound 2 drinks. Breakfast was good, very good for free. Entire facility is clean! Beds slept awesome! All the staff treated us so good! Pool is smaller but fine for me. Hot tub is decent. Always full it seems. Great place! I will be back.

BWRG-Management, Manager at BEST WESTERN PLUS Rio Grande Inn, responded to this review
Thank you for your honest review. We can match prices found online with reputable websites. You may remain in Otto's for as long as you like after we stop serving drinks or breakfast. We only serve the drinks from 5:30 - 7:30 which, at the moment, is all our liquor license permits. I hope you and your family join us again the next time you're in Durango. 25/03/2016

We just stayed here for three nights. The place was clean and staff was friendly. Kids loved the pool and we loved the included bar drinks. Breakfast was good as well and location is outstanding. Just book it! We were a 3 minute walk to bars/restaurants and tons of shops. I love being able to walk, very good stay.

" 2 queen suite"

5
19/03/2016

We loved the 2 queen suite. This room gave us parents our own space from the kiddos. Had a dining table, microwave and fridge. Also came with a sofa bed. We were on the second floor which was really loud from the people above us and the pool was indoors but it was visible to those in the bar area. Kinda felt weird having my kids swim where adults were watching and drinking. The know for our jets in our jacuzzi tub had been removed according to the guy at the desk. That would have been nice to know considering the room was $200 a night. . Other than that. . All is well! Oh! The front desk gives you tickets for a couple of free drinks at the bar. Not sure if that's a suite perk or what, though.

"Perfect place for small kids in down-town"

5
07/03/2016

Everything was just perfect. Let me start with the location. It qualifies as down-town though it's at the very southern tip where it's quiet with occasional friendly steam-engine train whistle. Think of it as a very upscale Best Western with clean, quiet, mountain-view rooms and a warm indoor-pool and hot Jacuzzi. This is a family hotel. Kids loved the pool. Morning breakfast was good, breakfast room a bit crammed though. Our room was facing the outside of the hotel, 2nd floor, great view of the snow-filled mountains. We were there between Xmas and New Year's, nice winter weather, quiet, clean rooms. Just a family-friendly winter hotel! They gave he adults 2 free bar drinks every day, complimentary. My daughter loved playing with the Winter-wonderland icicles hanging low from the room eaves. Wow, what a place. We stayed 4 nights and couldn't get enough. Walking distance to the famous Durango train, walking distance to all restaurants in down town. Hotel is in a cul-de-sac on 2nd street, away from the busy traffic area.

Great accommodations, wonderful staff, and awesome location. Within walking distance to great restaurants and shops. There is a trail by the river close by for recreational activities. Got two free drinks with our stay to be used for their bar area...A great treat!

"Durango in February"

25/02/2016

We called ahead to find a hotel with a king bed and were able to get a decent rate at the Best Western Rio Grande Inn. The hotel is right next to the Silverton Train Station and that was really fun to go and see, even though we didn't have time to take the train. The room was nice, the bed was comfortable and the happy hour was a bonus. The complimentary breakfast was closing early and so they had to prepare food for us and other guests that came down with still 30 minutes left for the breakfast hour. We were having car work done that meant we couldn't check out on time, but the manager was gracious and allowed us to check out later, saving us having to park our bags in the lobby.

gmcha, Manager at BEST WESTERN PLUS Rio Grande Inn, responded to this review

25/02/2016

Nice hotel for the price and the location. Rooms were not fancy but were comfortable and clean. We stayed for 5 days so we tried to keep housekeeping to a minimum....they fluffed up the beds and tidied up every day anyway. Parking was great right in front of our room (we were downstairs). It was nice being able to walk easily to downtown Durango shops and restaurants.

Had a great stay at Best Western Rio Grande Plus in Durango Co. Like always, the entire staff was friendly and very helpful. The location is convenient and central to the area that I need to be. I need to remember the staff names so next time I can mention them.

22/02/2016

Great location downtown by the train station. Nearby restaurants, coffee shops, and movie theater. The room was cozy and the bed was comfortable. Didn't have a problem but when checking in and out the hotel was having a hard time finding my reservation when booking with Priceline.

gmcha, Manager at BEST WESTERN PLUS Rio Grande Inn, responded to this review
We are glad to have had you as a guest in our hotel. The employee that checked you in is still rather new, and while he knows how to get through the check in process, it still takes him a little longer than usual. "Location, service and clean!"

20/02/2016

Staff at this hotel were wonderful. We received a Costco member rate for the room of $116 Fri/Sat and $107 Sunday. Great location for walking the downtown area. Plenty of parking at the hotel. Room was very clean, had a mini fridge, large flat screen tv, hair dryer, microwave and coffee machine. Breakfast had a great selection from Belgian waffles to yogurt and fruit. My kids loved the indoor pool! A couple of the nights the pool/hot tub were packed (a large ski group was at the hotel) but it didn't stay that way for long. While the kids enjoyed the pool the husband and I enjoyed our free drinks from the hotel bar Otto's (we received tickets at check in which ended up being 2 drinks per person person per night). Free use of laundry machines (2 washers 2 dryers) and a very small gym. Free wifi in rooms and throughout the hotel. We were very pleased with this hotel and would absolutely recommend. The only cons I have are the elevator was out so we had to carry the luggage up to the second floor. Not a big of a deal for us, though it could be an issue for others. They were working on it every night were were there though so it must be a major repair. From the hotel its about 40 min drive to Mesa Verde National park or 1hr 30 min to Four Corners Monument.

gmcha, Manager at BEST WESTERN PLUS Rio Grande Inn, responded to this review
I'm glad you enjoyed your stay in our hotel. The elevator is being replaced part by part as we modernize it and that should be done by the end of the week. I hope you enjoyed Durango and what it has to offer and I hope you stay with us next time you're in our wonderful town. Keith Cressy Evening Manager 970-385-4980

18/02/2016

The staff lead by Erica Shatz made my business stay very enjoyable. Their knowledge of nearby eateries and business's made me want to return and spend more time in Durango. As an added bonus a jacuzzi tube in the room helped me to relax from the stress of work.

gmcha, Manager at BEST WESTERN PLUS Rio Grande Inn, responded to this review
Great! The staff here is most excellent, if I may say so myself. I'm glad you got to experience what we do every day in Durango. I hope we'll see you next time and can further impress you with our superior service. Keith Cressy Evening Manager 970-385-4980

"Nice hotel but problems, many small ones for my room"

3
29/01/2016

I spent 2 nights with a group of about 55 older winter sports participants. Positive: only 3 block walk to the foot of Main Street, where there are lots of shops and restaurants. Negatives: The elevator went out of service the first night (I note from a review it was out of service 3 weeks ago) and was not repaired by the time we left. Some stairs are completely outside, some are enclosed but not heated. The hot tub was out of service when we arrived, fixed by 9 p.m. the last night. My room near the corner of the atrium has only a small window to an indoor hallway. Problems in the room (no particular order): TV remote did not seem to work; tub drained very slowly; one of the closet sliding doors was hard to move; no box of facial tissues (other rooms had them). My room, and many facing the atrium, has glass doors, which may be a problem for someone concerned about security. I enjoyed the large pool in the atrium, temperature may be upper 70s (cooler than the usual indoor hotel pool).

gmcha, Manager at BEST WESTERN PLUS Rio Grande Inn, responded to this review
I'm sorry for the issues during your stay. The hot tub should have only been out of service until about 7 each night while the mechanic was working on the jets. We had to turn off the heater for him to work on them, which also meant the water in the pool would no longer be heated during that time too. Normally the pool is at 85 and the hot tub at 104. I'm not sure what room you were in but I checked all the TV's in the rooms that your grouped stayed in and found one with a remote which had dying batteries. I'm sorry we didn't notice those prior to your stay. I hope you and your group enjoyed the mountain and the town. I hope you'll consider staying with us again. 08/01/2016

I have stayed at this Best Western many times. It seems to me that the rooms and equipment need updating. The ice machine was broken on the second floor for most of our stay, The elevator was broken. The pool was closed one day due to contamination. Other than the elevator these are minor inconveniences. However, due to my just having had knee surgery it was a huge problem for me.

"Amazing Location"

4
29/12/2015

Our family stayed at this hotel from Dec 26-28th as a good location to explore downtown and convenience for the Durango & Silverton Narrow Guage RR. The hotel is within walking distance of both downtown and the RR. It is an older hotel but well maintained, quite clean and excellent staff. The biggest benefit was being able to park our car for free and walk to everything we wanted to see. Room - Average sized but suited out needs. The only complaint is we asked for our cot ahead of time and that wasn't available so for the first night our son slept on the floor. The staff brought extra blankets though. Cot became available second night. Breakfast Area - I recommend you go down early. The breakfast area is open from 6:30-9:30 am with a decent selection. Pool Area - tons of children; didn't see many adults using it. Hotel Layout - I thought was a little awkward. Rooms are centered around an atrium and a little confusing but again not a big deal. Elevator - Didn't work for the majority of our stay. Overall a nice hotel; we would stay here again because of location. That can't be beat.

gmcha, Manager at BEST WESTERN PLUS Rio Grande Inn, responded to this review
I'm glad you enjoyed your stay. I do apologize for not having a rollaway readily available on your first night. The last 2 weeks of the year are very busy and we try our best to accommodate all of our guests requests. I also apologize for the elevator. 21/12/2015

It's a place I want to keep a secret so it's available when we visit but that would be wrong. The staff was great. We had a little accident with our little one and they quickly provided new sheets and blankets. The location couldn't be better especially since we were taking the kids on the Polar Express. It was perfect to just walk back and put them down for the night after a long day without having to get in back in the car and drive back. It's a fantastic location to all the restaurants and shops. They had free washers and dryers you can use to wash your clothes(you just pay 1.50 for the detergent). The rooms were very comfortable and clean. They even have a fridge & a microwave in the room. For the price it exceeds in all areas!!! We'll definitely be returning !

This was the second time staying here. The first was 7 years ago. Clean rooms and friendly staff. We didn't use the indoor pool or hot tub as there were a LOT of people using both. Very strange location as you have to snake your way to the hotel/motel.

12/12/2015

Third time coming to this restaurant and still loving it time. Great service, big rooms, nice and clean and the pool is always clean and heated. I asked for the top floor and received adjoining rooms for the family. Breakfast was fantastic, hot and good. Great showers and hot water all the time. Very kid friendly and family orientated. It's also a quiet hotel and a great location. The walk for the Polar Express is short and sweet. They have a happy hour too.

good location, nice staff, strange t.v. connection that we had to fight with, but the bed was comfortable - and no outside noise filtered in, which is always nice. Staff was friendly and helpful. Thanks so much!

Thanks so much for the wonderful review. We do appreciate the positive feedback, it really means so much to all of us here. Unfortunately, there was an internal issue with Charter that was making the television signal cut in and out all day Thursday and Friday that we couldn't resolve ourselves. I hope it wasn't too much of an inconvenience. We hope that you had a great time in Durango and that you will come back and stay with us again someday soon. Keith Cressy Front Office

"Best staff and great room"

05/12/2015

All of the staff were extremely courteous and helpful during our stay. The room was great and I liked the layout of the hotel with the indoor pool and such. Finally someone knew how to keep a pool warm. Breakfast was good with adequate choices. Didn't get a chance to attend welcome reception as we were out, but would have liked to. Next time for sure. Will definitely stay here again.

"Location, location, location!"

29/11/2015

Stayed for just one night and booked the hotel for the proximity to the train station. The location can't be beat for getting to and from the train as well as all the restaurants and stores on Main St. The room while a bit dated was perfectly fine. Breakfast was crowded and seemed short staffed trying to keep up with the demand. The happy hour and 2 free drinks per adult was a very nice perk. Pool was surprising cold although very busy at 9am when it opened. Overall great staff. Would return again if in town.

The breakfast was disgusting! Eggs were cold, sausage was slimmy, waffle irons didn't work. The room was ok but needed some work. The Window would not close and it was 18 degrees the night we stayed. Cold breeze all night long. Close to the train and downtown but probably not stay there again.

I'm deeply sorry for the off day we were having with breakfast. We take all of our guest reviews seriously and will use your feedback to help improve our amenities. I couldn't find any called in complaints regarding a broken window but we'll search every room until we find it. "Good for an overnight stay"

14/11/2015

We stayed overnight on an extended journey through the Southwest. The hotel is rather dated, but clean with rather large rooms. We have been glad to get a room with outdoor access, as inside there is a haevy chlorine smell from the indoor pool (which is in a rather dark place). The smell is also in the room where the welcome drinks and the breakfast are offered. The location of the hotel is excellent, in a tranquil place but close to everywhere. We liked Durango and the lively vibe there and the nice shops. The hotel is close to some good dinner options. Staff was friendly, but not overly efficient. First impression was rather not inviting, with a somehow unkempt front office and to check out we had to go "behind the scene" to find somebody to return the key cards to.

gmcha, Manager at BEST WESTERN PLUS Rio Grande Inn, responded to this review
I'm so sorry that your first impression was not impressive. This is not our standard and I apologize for the lack of service you received. "Durango for Train in October"

09/11/2015

We had 2 nights at the Best Western Plus Rio Grande Inn in order to travel on the Durango to Silverton train. The hotel's location was perfect for the Durango station being just a couple of blocks away (far enough not to be disturbed by the noise but a very easy walk). It is also very easy to walk around the centre of Durango from here and get to all of the restaurants, bars, shops, riverside walk, etc. The good points for the hotel were it's location, the evening drink provided from 6:00 - 7:30pm each evening, a nice breakfast and the room was never too busy when we were there in October. We did not use the pool but quite a few folk were doing so while we were there (and there was a defined time for closure so no late night noise). The bad points would only be that the electronic room keys often took 6 or 7 times before they worked. The hotel does not have great scenic views from our room, we just looked over the car park of an apartment/hotel next door.

The Rio Grande Inn was warm, cozy , comfortable, with happy Southwestern decor. Our room was large, well appointed and the mattresses were excellent. Food served to our Road Scholar group was abundant and delicious. Kudos to the cook. Jonathan, the server, did an amazing job, pleasant, efficient and accommodating to requests.

This is a very nice hotel. Designed around an Inside atrium with large pool. Some rooms open from the atrium, others from the outside. 3 stories. Very interesting design. Elevator with glass walls. Our King room had a balcony with table and chairs. Very nice best western. Room was large. Breakfast room large and well stocked with many different items. Very good breakfast. The biggest plus is location. Downtown. Walk to restaurant and shops. Easy to get too. Complimentary happy hour drinks. Excellent wifi connection.Close to the narrow gauge RR.

"best downtown location"

31/10/2015

I stayed at the hotel for a week on business. The location is excellent if a person wants to experience the downtown area. There are many great restaurants in the area. Other locations cannot compete. Staff is professional and courteous and treat the customers the way they should be treated. Breakfast choices need to be varied as it was the exact same menu every morning. Given the other choices in town, I would choose this location in the future.

All went well except for a noisy heater. When it reached the programmed temperature it came on (good) but the fan made way too much noise (bad). In the hotel's defense it appears all the heater operate the same way.

In Durango for a couple nights. Family of 4 (children ages 2 & 5). Needed two adjoining rooms (booked in advance). Hotel was clean and well maintained. Perfect location for a family to walk to the train. Also very convenient for walking to other destinations in town. Staff was very friendly. Pool was fun (and clean). Breakfast was good. If we return to Durango, we will definitely stay here again.

"great if you are going on the train trip"

21/10/2015

Picked this hotel as the facilities sounded good and convenient for the trip on the steam train. It is within easy walking distance of the train depot and easy to get to the main area of the older town. You could hear the trains but did not find it intrusive. The complimentary drinks and snacks early evening was a nice bonus. The towels were extra large and soft and the bed very comfy. There was always plenty of hot water no matter what time of day for a bath/shower. Breakfast had a wide choice of food to cover most tastes. Not sure if any of the rooms had a view – ours did not but did have a small balcony but too cold to sit out of an evening when we stayed. It may be a bit more expensive than some Durango hotels but if I was in Durango again would defiantly stay here

Another yearly stay at the BW Plus Rio Grande Inn. Always a great room that is clean and comfortable. Lots of pillow and two complimentary cocktails each evening! Gota love that after a day with family. Close to everything in town so you can walk to restaurants/shops/entertainment. Ask the front desk about the restaurants they can point you in a direction to work for your family and budget.

18/10/2015

This is a nice hotel, ideally located two blocks from the train station and where the "downtown" sort of starts. Our room was slightly above average for it's class. Furniture and décor was acceptable, bathroom was nice, beds were comfy and linens were clean. Breakfast was average, but plentiful and satisfactory. There is a pool, but we didn't try that as we spent most time outside. Overall a great place to stay, good value, great location.

In downtown Durango. Great location. Convenient. Quiet. Great Breakfast. Manager's Cocktail hour free! Clean and comfortable great staff. Pool in atrium. Easy check in and out. Don't miss this value! Local Irish bar with music. Near train station.

We always like to stay near the train station and usually splurge on the Strater or General Palmer. They were booked for this visit do we stayed here this time. The location is still really good within walking distance of all the shops and the train. The grounds and room were clean and tidy. Our only complaints would be the air conditioner on our room was very noisy, had to sleep with ear plugs. Also, the beds weren't as comfortable as they should be for the rate we paid. We understand we paid for the location but hopefully they invest some of their profits on new hvac units and better quality mattresses.

We stayed 2 nights at the Best Western Rio Grande Inn. Great location, in walking distance of downtown and the train station. It's a three story hotel with a pool in the atrium. Some rooms open onto the pool, others, like ours, open to the outside of the hotel. Good hot breakfast. In the afternoon, they served free drinks [2/person], chips & salsa for happy hour – which we enjoyed while using their free washer and drier to catch up on our laundry!

Fantastic staff makes this place special. It is within walking distance of EVERYTHING. Free breakfast. Free wifi. Free evening reception with light snacks and beer/mixed drinks and wine! We have stayed at this property several times over the years because it is walking distance to historical district. Rates were up $100 from last year at this same time. Staff was very unfriendly and unresponsive to issues and no people skills. Will never stay here again.

"Walking distance to Train"

5
03/10/2015

We spent 6 nights in this hotel. We stayed here about 25 years ago and chose it because it was walking distance to the Durango and Silverton Train. This place has really been updated and is very nice. We chose a suite with a balcony, pricey, but extremely nice. The rooms were attractive and comfortable. The only improvement would be 2 recliners instead of the two chairs in the living room. The breakfast was very good. We had a wet bar with a fridge. This was nice because we enjoyed a glass of wine on the balcony before we went to dinner. We were able to walk to a variety of restaurants. Considering the tourists in the historic part of Durango, walking is a huge plus. The hotel was fully booked while we were there and this put a strain on the housekeeping staff. We had to ask for supplies a couple of times. We were on the third floor, this gave us a nice view, and the hotel has an elevator.

"Overall excellent stay"

30/09/2015

The location is excellent for easy access to the train and the heart of the town of Durango. The facilities were well maintained with a pool, jacuzzi and free buffet breakfast and happy hour. The rooms were very nice, with comfortable beds, very clean bathroom, coffee maker, refrigerator and microwave. Good wi-fi in the room. The front desk staff was friendly and helpful. I would stay here again without hesitation.

29/09/2015

Stayed here 2 night in August with the family on vacation. The room was clean and nice, we got a roll away because there was five of us. The reason we chose this hotel was because of its proximity to the Durango-Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad (a MUST DO in Durango). It is a 2 minute walk from the hotel to the railroad (the railroad charges for parking I believe. It is also a 2 minute walk from the hotel to the historic district of town. The free breakfast was very good and the indoor pool seemed nice (although we never swam in it). The complimentary wine hour was a nice touch too! I would stay there again
