    « Absolutely Amazing »

First visit to the hotel, and we will certainly be going back. The Hotel is first class, lovely room, great staff, lovely food, grounds well kept could not find one fault, only that we should have stayed longer. Bird of Prey centre in the grounds but we did not have time to visit. The staff were exceptional, helpful and curtious.

« Wonderful Walworth Castle Hotel »

We stayed at Walworth Castle Hotel to celebrate my husband's 40th Birthday weekend. He had no idea where we were going or what was happening. When I booked and gave our list of requirements, I mentioned that every aspect of the weekend was a surprise for my husband and I asked that staff would be discreet when we arrive. We couldn't  have hoped for a better place to celebrate. The surroundings were beautiful, the meals were superb, the castle was stunning and the suite we had (King James I Suite) was breathtaking. But the best thing of all was the staff. I realise that people often say how amazing staff were at a particular location. However, we have travelled extensively, and having my own travel agency, I often get feedback from clients on hotels. I can honestly say that there is no hotel in the UK and practically no other hotel in the world that we have stayed in where staff did so much to ensure our stay was as good as it possibly could be. The staff here really care, and that is reflected in their ability to perform their role to the best of their ability. Without exception, every member of staff working this weekend went out if their way to make it special for us. Thus was no simple task considering that they were also hosting a wedding. I would like to say a huge thank you to everyone at Walworth  Castle Hotel who worked 11-13 May 2018 for making it one of the most memorable and enjoyable celebrations we have ever had. You are all truly amazing. If anyone is reading this and has been in doubt over whether or not to book a stay or an event at Walworth Castle Hotel, I would 100% recommend that you get it booked, as nowhere else will match up to the service and experience  that you get there.

« Amazing stay at Walworth Castle Hotel »

My husband and I stayed here for one night and it was absolutely amazing. The hotel itself was stunning and the staff were fantastic, nothing was too much trouble. The restaurant was lovely and the food was delicious. Highly recommend staying here.

    « Wedding Anniversary Break »

Lovely spot with gorgeous views across the countryside, fantastic food & excellent service in the restaurant, we stayed in the King James room which is the size of 3 standard rooms with living area / couch and full of original features as it might have done when he stayed in the 1600's. We had a young family and the staff went out of their way to carry bags and accommodate our baby and toddler. Will definitely be back!

    « Wedding Anniversary Stay »

We stayed at Walworth Castle for 3 nights to celebrate our wedding anniversary, this was our second visit this year and again all the staff were really welcoming and did everything possible to make our stay really special. It was a lovely surprise to find rose petals, chocolates and a card from the staff on our 4 poster bed.The room was lovely and also very clean and the housekeeper went out of her way to make sure we had extra milk and was also kind enough to take photos of us outside the castle. The restaurant food was fantastic, especially the pancakes at breakfast and again all the restaurant staff were really friendly. We are hoping to return again later in the year, thank you everyone for a fantastic stay.

    « This should be a 5 star hotel - it's the best!???? »

Ignore stupid comments like the rubbish ice cream one - the girl tried her best - bless her. I've done this type of work and when staff is low yes it's hard- but you don't slag off a beautiful hotel if you can't get a flipping ice cream- pathetic!!! We've had a perfect stay. Rooms food and staff all truly amazing. It should be 5 star in every aspect. It's so good we will stay again. The trip down the dungeon was incredible and I think a wedding here would be unforgettable. The grounds are beautiful and so relaxing. I won't ever forget my roast beef dinner. It was simply the best. I always reckon my roast dinners are unbeatable but this one was sensational. The beef so tender. Wish I lived nearer as I'd do a Sunday lunch regularly. Well done to everyone in front and behind the scenes - you really do get top marks - and more!!! Ah yes ????cheers

« okay for one night »

Me and my wife decided to go away for the bank holiday so booked Walworth Castle. The staff are indeed helpful but i can't help feeling that we wouldn't stay here again. The room was fine, it had a modern four poster bed made to look old so didn't really work, the shower was fine with plenty of hot water, no bathrobes, tea and coffee available in the room. The castle itself has a garden to sit out in with nice views of the countryside, the evening meal was poor, it looked a bit cheap and processed, the breakfast was a little better but again it all felt a little under budget for us. It's a shame because the staff do try their best.

« Excellent food, grounds and internet. friendly helpful staff »

Excellent food, both in the evening and the breakfast and the hotel grounds where beautiful and very well kept. The internet was very good. And the staff where very friendly and helpful. If I had to pick one downside it would be difficult to, but perhaps my bathroom could have been a bit bigger

« medieval night and stay - fabulous »

Fabulous reception staff, beautiful surroundings and attentive staff members who went above and beyond to make sure we had a great night (and I was given the most delicious gluten free options) Attended the Medieval night which was such fun and also educational. Fabulous musicians and food. Rooms spotlessly clean and well decorated. (room 12 was a little smaller than my friends who were in 14 & 15 - BUT I would definitely stay again even in a smaller room. If you want a bath request room 15. Beautiful surroundings.

    « It's a castle :) »

Fantastic hotel with character and the staff are great very friendly and attentive. The bed was also great, I had a great night sleep. The food was delicious and plenty of it. The surroundings are also very beautiful

« Comfy bed and great location »

I stayed at this hotel on a business trip up from Oxfordshire and was pleasantly surprised by the place, this is definitely a gem in the best western family. A lovely warm friendly welcome on checking in and I was allocated room 10 which was nice clean and comfortable with excellent broadband and far better than many hotels that I stayed at. The bed was and I had a goods nights sleep in a comfortable bed. The food in the Farmers bar was good and plentiful as was the breakfast. I would definitely come back and stay on both business and a pleasure trip. Well worth staying at.

    « A gem rediscovered »

It was years since we'd visited Walworth but will certainly be back. Beautiful surroundings, lovely staff and value for money. Had dinner on Saturday evening with friends. Food was unpretentious and a bit different. All six of us thoroughly enjoyed it. The front of house Irish guy wouldn't have been out of place in Faulty Towers and was hilarious - made our night. Went back for afternoon tea with a friend midweek. We were very well looked after and the tea was delicious.

    « Over night stay »

I have travelled many times with my work and have been fortunate to stay at many first class hotels and this hotel is right up there when it comes to qualify This is the most delightful hotel in a fantastic location, the hotel staff were very professional but did not lack the friendly approach something you were aware of from the minute you entered the reception The lady on reception was kind enough to show us around and offer local knowledge and hotel history sorry I did not get her name All the hotel staff including the night porter who was kind enough to send us on our way with a fast track breakfast and a coffee are a credit to the hotel not forgetting the house keeping staff who had prepared my room to a very high standard and the bar staff who kept me fed and watered Thank you for a very pleasant stay I would like you to pass on my thanks to all Kind regards Mr s Brady

« A weekend away to see friends »

This place is not like your typical hotel. However, the service and location was excellent. Make sure that you take your satnav as although it is near Darlington, it is not easy to find. The rooms are on the ground and first floors. There is also a dungeon, which we did not visit, but learned later that any of the staff would have taken us to see it. There is also a birds of prey centre attached. There is a bar of sorts, but not the kind of bar you can sit at. Seating is in the adjoining room, but there was a wedding party on, so we simply had our drinks with friends in the restaurant.

    « One night stay »

We took the opportunity to stay here for the 1 night we got away from the kids whilst visiting family in the North East and I have to say we weren't disappointed. I rang ahead a few months before to book and was pleased to hear that I could get the best deal this way. The staff member i spoke to advised me on room choice and my tip would be to book a room in the actual castle and not the annex. Why would you go to a castle and stay in the annex?! Our room was a four poster and the staff had laid on some chocolate strawberries and flowers which was a nice touch. The bed was huge and very comfy and the bathroom was nice and modern. Making our way downstairs we spent a few hours lounging around in the bar as the weather wasn't great but the staff were very friendly and the beer was good. Food that evening was really good and reasonably priced. We did think about having the massive steak between us but decided against it ... seeing it later we probably should have done! Before retiring for the evening we asked one of the staff if we could have a look in the dungeon / cellar and they were more than happy to oblige ... top marks! Overall we really enjoyed our staff, the staff were extremely friendly and i would recommend the castle to anyone.

    « Easter Break »

My wife and I stayed here for 3 nights over Easter. The castle was stunning from the outside and inside. The receptionist was really helpful on arrival and all the staff were really good, nothing was too much trouble. Had a lovely breakfast which was a combination of self service and cook to order with plenty of choice. Overall a very good stay and will return.

    « Wedding venue (guest) »

Attended a wedding here during Spring 2017, and what a stunning place it is! Grounds were amazing, staff were fantastic, food was delicious! Tempted to book up a weekend stay myself sometime in the next year. Amazing place.

« Excellent hotel but restaurant could be better »

Just come back from one night stay four poster bedroom was great apart from scum and hairs in spa bath, very off putting. Restaurant option poor, it would be nice to have an evening meal in one of the other rooms that are used just for Sunday lunch, this was a birthday treat and having a bit more fine dining would have made it a really special night. We asked for one of the window tables to be reserved to find that this had not happened we ended up luckily picking another table but this was not cleaned properly, food still on the floor and chairs from small children. All staff were great but just a few tweaks could make this a really special hotel.

    « excellent »

A wonderful couple of days short break. All the staff were polite and helpful, they were such a happy crowd it reinforced the excellent overall experience of our holiday. we will be returning later in the year.l

    « Beckett Wedding »

What an awesome place to have a wedding I cannot say thank you enough to the wonderful team at Walworth Castle from the day we booked to the moment we left nothing was too much trouble. Ailsa looked after us exceptionally, looking after the finer details and helping us make decisions. On the day we would never have got through it all without Andrew and his amazing team, Jess and Julie on reception taking care of our guests and being a welcoming face, and at times a welcoming pit stop for a chat during all the madness. And not forgetting Jess 2 on the evening and at breakfast who looked after us really well. Thank you so so much to the whole team I can't remember everyone's name but you were all amazing.

    « I love this hotel »

My husband and I have stayed here several time. Each time we book a room in the main castle, and are never disappointed. The rooms are spacious, clean and well equipped. Staff are super friendly and nothing is too much trouble. We stayed for breakfast which was great. There's a large choice of cereal, fruit and pastries as well as cook breakfast items and drinks. I love the fact that the hot items are cooked to order and not buffet style. The Hotel and grounds are lovely too, even on a miserable day in February ?? Thank you

« 1st wedding anniversary at our wedding venue »

Another lovely and friendly welcome into the castle on our return after exactly a year since our wedding there. We enjoyed a lovely valentine meal with some excellent live music and felt welcomed by all the friendly staff who remembered us from our wedding last year. More wonderful memories made. Thank you Best Western Walworth Castle!

    « Re-visit to the castle was a disappointment »

We were married at the castle in 2009 and we visited again in 2010 for our anniversary, so this was the first time in 8 years since visiting. The Castle has been decorated since our last visit and looked good. The outside was still well maintained and the grounds are still great. A nature trail has been added which was fun. The room was clean and spacious, we always like to stay in the castle which is the nicest but can be a little cold! My only concern is the quality of the food in there now. We had lunch, evening meal and breakfast and neither were very nice. My wife and I both sent our evening meal back as not cooked correctly and we also found a hair! The staff are good but didn't really know how to handle the situation and we still were charged full price. On checking out I also mentioned it to the staff and no real effort to rectify the problem. All in all the castle is still a great hotel but the food needs to improve.

« Viewed for a wedding and can't wait to do it! »

So I wanted to come on and comment on a previous review which almost put me off the whole place! I went and it was a busy Sunday afternoon but everyone was lovely and helpful! We viewed the venue with Callum and he was amazing! I can't wait for our wedding now, just need to fast forward 2 years? eugh! After viewing the rooms, they looked beautiful. Service was a high standard and they are all well trained!!!

« Excellent stay, lovely room and staff »

Well I always wanted to be king of the castle. Well on this occasion it was just like I was. Lovely old building with period features. Welcoming staff and a foot poster bedroom fit for a king or queen. It had snowed so it looked very picturesque. Unfortunately it had melted by the next day. The food was fantastic as were the staff who served it. I will definitely stay again when in the area.

    « Beautiful hotel »

A lovely one night stay. The bedroom 16 was absolutely fantastic with separate bedroom and lounge area. Lovely four poster bed in the round tower with large comfortable settee and large TV in seating area. Large bathroom with brilliant jet spa bath. Luxury toiletries provided and plenty of clean towels. The suite was lovely and warm with additional electric heater if required. Could not fault the excellent meals on the evening and excellent service from very pleasant helpful staff. Nothing was too much bother. Comfortable lounge area to relax in following your meal. Breakfast was very well cooked with a good choice on offer. Could not fault the eggs benedict cooked to perfection. Overall an excellent hotel which was extremely clean and comfortable with extremely helpful and polite staff. Only one complaint we could make was that we were only there for one night could quite happily of stayed for longer.

« Highlight of our trip »

We stayed here for one night and it was the highlight of our trip. A little bit of indulgence after a hectic start to our holidays. This stay was an R&R day. We stayed in the Jenison Room (16) which I understand is one of the top 2 suites in this hotel. We paid about £180 for a midweek night including breakfast. Even though it was rainy and stormy outside overnight to the extent of toppling outdoor furniture we all had a peaceful and restful sleep. The hotel was decorated with castle theme items. Lunch for 2 people costs £25 and dinner for two people costs £37

    « Walworth Castle »

A great hotel in a fairy tale castle. The only down side no lift in the castle which is understandable given the age of the place. The staff were great nothing too much trouble for them. The dinner menu did not give a choice for vegetarian diners. The rooms were great and as it was during the snow fall time the rooms were nice and warm and the beds were so very comfortable

    4
« Good accommodation but needs better Wifi »

Arriving at the front of the hotel and seeing the stunning building is best done in daylight as it really is a spectacular building. The car park is large and spacious as well as being just outside the front door so no long walks from the car park. Check in was very quick and easy and the receptionist was very friendly and helpful. My room - 34 - was a good size and was nice and warm with great lightening - why is it so many hotel bedrooms are dark and dismal! The bed was a good size and very comfortable giving me a good nights sleep. I did have a problem logging onto the Wifi and the receptionist offered to let me change rooms but after a long drive I couldnt be bothered and eventually managed to get onto the Wifi. Getting a mobile phone signal was a different matter and I had to resort to going out into the car park to make a call - not ideal on a cold January evening. Breakfast was good but the cooked breakfast could definitely do with the option of baked beans - the black pudding was excellent. This hotel could really be outstanding if it managed to improve the WiFi and mobile signal as it seems to have been like this for a number of years.

    5
    « Excellent hotel »

Excellent value for the money, very professional staff, clean comfortable rooms, good evening meals with very good breakfast, I would stay again but if I could afford it would go for the better rooms. Only negative was they need new menu cards for the breakfast, bit grotty stained with chewed edges.

« Viewed as possible wedding venue! »

We viewed Walworth as a possible wedding venue, the general Manager who showed us around was rude and blunt. When we asked questions he cut us off like we didn't know what we were talking about, regarding the outdoor ceremony area instead of listening to our concerns he was more interested in telling us that he had paid £6,500 for some bushes (which we weren't interested in) the bedrooms in the main castle were impressive, but no disabled facilities we were told ?a ground floor would do for disabled' the function room was too small for what we wanted and when viewed this concern he told us ?do I look like someone who lies?' (Anyone who has to say that....?) the beer garden looked like something from a standard town pub. Only good thing offered was the public would be kept away from the wedding. I left knowing I would not be parting with thousands of pounds to people so abrupt, rude and more interested in his bushes than our wedding concerns!

« Made a family wedding an event to remember »

From my welcome on arrival to the goodbyes this was a memorable stay, and made so much more so by the friendly and efficient staff. The hotel and grounds are well-maintained. At one point it snowed, and within a very short time someone was out with a mini-tractor clearing the car park and pathways. Service in the bars and restaurants was good throughout our stay; the food and drink to a good standard. My room was comfortable and clean, as was the bathroom. The wedding was conducted flawlessly, and the afternoon and evening entertainment was accommodated likewise. I heard no complaint from anyone in our party. The scenic views of the surrounding countryside are a bonus

    « Stunning »

Booked this hotel only 2 days before going, and what a find!!!! Beautiful location, very peaceful and the castle itself has been restored and renovated so that there is every modern feature but it still looks and feels historic. From checking in to reluctantly leaving we were looked after by the staff, who are ALL very friendly and helpful. Nothing is too much trouble. Food is excellent, breakfast a great start to the day and two lovely areas to relax in the evening, both with lovely warm fires - very welcome this weekend. We had a standard room in the annexe, which whilst not the largest was very comfortable and spotlessly clean throughout. The room also felt to be in character with the rest of the hotel, not like some horrible seventies concrete tower block that we have stayed in before. We liked it so much we have already booked again for a longer stay in summer - thanks especially to Susan for arranging this for us - when we will be able to enjoy the grounds and gardens, and the birds of prey centre. Can't wait to return, and maybe even fit in another weekend before then. Looking forward to seeing you all again.

    « Kings & Queens »

Well, cannot be said about This amazing Hotel... From the minute we arrived till the minute we reluctantly departed, we were treated like Royalty. The walls of the hotel that was originally built in the 16th century are filled rich history from years long past. The staff are extremely knowledgeable of the area and are always willing to office assistance where needed. The genuine smiles on the staff radiates from their faces as the pass you by and you get feeling that you have become a distant member of the family of staff. The owner of Walworth came and introduced himself personally but portrayed the persona of a regular staff member. It was only towards the end of a brief history lesson of the castle that I came to realize that he was actually the owner and that him and his lovely wife are still physically hands on on the day to day running of this beautiful Hotel. My experience was of such great pleasure that I would actually consider moving to this area in a heartbeat! Thank you to Owners and staff of the Walworth Castle Hotel for making our visit exceptionally welcoming. PS... The food is absolutely first class and the quaint dinning area with it warm cozy fireplace is absolutely tremendous.

    « A pleasant surprise but a bit cold »

We got a great deal on this place and we had a nice chilled out time. The staff were so helpful but I found the place a bit cold. We had a lovely meal in the Farmers restaurant and the grounds are lovely. I would love to go back in Summer. The road leading to the hotel are a bit difficult to navigate in bad weather but we had a nice, chilled out stay.

« More luxurious than expected... »

SatNav brought us in from the north and directed us to a pretty grim farmyard at the rear/neighbouring the castle. Turning back and finally finding the correct entrance and good grief did we get a better first impression! Approach from the south and you can't miss it as it majestically sits in full view for the last mile... Rooms were very good, 4 poster room nice and spacious, comfortable. Second room upgraded FOC to Jenison (Bridal) Suite due to mistakes made with booking was exceptional though missing a shower having a two person corner jacuzzi instead. Would have been an inconvenience if we were staying longer but was great for the three day short stay we were. Both rooms were lacking in storage but for short stay, again didn't bother us much. Central heating insufficient but fan heater had been supplied and was appreciated!

« Fit for a king ??at the Castle »

I felt I needed to write something positive about this wonderful building because as a rule Best West or BW as there rather naff logo looks like a new pound shop spin off would lead you to think! For a 3 * Hotel for the life of me I don't know it should be a 4* at least this Castle is very much undersold' although a shower that was more like spitting than drenching could have paid to the downgrading that it being a listed building won't help in the star rating handouts! Ok enough waffle how good is the place to stay and does it serve good fodder! Quite simply yes and yes! Great Castle with all the trimmings thrones dungeons, tin men and wonky Floors! Loved the place end of' as for the food ?? well that was a total surprise set menus with the standard specials board but the surprise lies in the price, Was very reasonable for the food on offer. Well prepared very fresh tasty ?? nothing to pretentious swiped with a brush or micro flower arrangement rubbish just a well thought out menu with fresh wholesome taste and value in mind! Would I come again dam right keep the bed pan warm for my return!

    « Superb »

from entering the reception to the point of leaving the staff could not have been more helpful of more attentive without being in your face. The room was very good and the food served in the restaurant was excellent. Can't wait to go back again.

    « Short break »

2 night break and worth every penny. Beautiful building, and as to be expected they are limited to what they can do with it being a listed building. Rooms in main building are a little more expensive but it's lovely to be in the original building with all the usual things provided. Bathrooms are a little dated but adequate. Did have a bit of an issue with the window not closing properly during very windy weather at night so didn't sleep particularly well, mentioned to reception staff who said she would report it. All staff were very friendly, ate both breakfast and dinner with a good choice on menu at both sittings. Evening meals very reasonably priced and food was lovely. Will definitely return but wouldn't stay in room 34 due to issue with window.

    « Daughters wedding »

From arrival to Walworth castle hotel the day before the wedding we where looked after by the hotel staff Offering to take our bags to the room. Explaining where everything was and saying if there was anything wrong let the receptionist know. After settling into our room which was the General Aylmer which was the original castle chapel, We when down to the bar for a drink and lunch again severed by very nice staff nothing to much trouble. Then on the evening we met the family for a meal for 15 of us the meals were very good and were hot when severed The day of the wedding it snowed to put a great feeling to a white wedding. And yet again all the staff could not do enough to make the day a success The next day they even offered to Cary the bags back to the car through the snow over all it was a outstanding stay well done Walworth castle

Sunday lunch is one of the best I've eaten in the area and not silly prices...well worth a visit. County Durham/Teesdale is one of the most beautiful unknown areas To visit if you haven't been...try it....you will be back.??

    « Christmas Day Lunch »

We enjoyed a fabulous Christmas Day lunch here. The food was excellent as always and the staff were so pleasant it may the day feel extra special. We didn't feel rushed and it made for a very enjoyable day. Thank you to everyone who made it special, hope to see you next year.

    « Excellent Hotel »

This 12th Century castle is a lovely combination of olde-worlde meets new world. Tastefully decorated to look old, with an excellent restaurant which supplies beautiful meals at a decent price - with them even easily able to cater for my coeliac disease - makes this a wonderful place to stay for any reason. The staff are very good and always have time for a friendly chat and this is now the only hotel I will stay in when in the area.

    « Beautiful Castle »

We stayed for a weekend in the Walworth Suite and it was stunning. Cannot fault the Castle or the grounds. Ordered room service on the first night and we had issues with the receptionist not knowing whether there was a child menu available and insisted we come back down to reception to register our credit card before an order could be placed. Not happy as we had already shown our card for the room payment and made dinner reservations for Saturday and told her we would be ordering food. Got dressed and went to reception, a young girl who was a waitress, helped me getting food organised while the receptionist just didn't seem to have a clue! Saturday morning breakfast was extremely slow considering there were only a handful of us in there. My young 18mth Granddaughter had to be fed from the continental items to keep her happy while we waited over 40 minutes for cooked items. Saturday evening we had family over for dinner. There was a Wedding reception taking place and it was heaving, there was nowhere for us as hotel guests to sit and the noise was just unbearable. We went to the restaurant, but again the noise from the Wedding guests in the corridor outside the restaurant and the colourful language was really bad. Add in children from the Wedding charging through the restaurant playing tag and it was a most unpleasant experience. Staff didn't seem bothered at all and it seemed that this was the norm for a weekend. We went with our guests to our suite, there was nowhere to sit downstairs and the noise was overwhelming. Food in the restaurant was really good and I was impressed that they accommodated my guests Gluten intolerance with a wide range of options on the menu. Most was available as Gluten free if requested. Top marks. Sunday: Woken at 7:30am by knocking on the door with room service that we hadn't ordered!! When we went to breakfast we were treated very differently from Saturday. Considering how busy it was, breakfast was quick and well cooked. The waitress that had woken me with room service, sought me out and personally apologised, even though it was not her fault she was sent to the wrong room. A genuinely nice young girl as were most of the waiting staff. Spoke to the Wedding Planner during our stay and it is quite apparent this is a very popular Wedding venue and is booked most weekends. It is a pity that due to the limited social space available, this is not a weekend getaway place for couples or families to enjoy. As a mid-week romantic place to stay or a weekend when no Weddings are booked, I cannot think of a better place to stay, it is worth the money. However I would give it a miss when a Wedding is taking place and they should mention it on their website about noise and space for hotel guests. 3 stars purely because we paid a lot of money to stay and eat in this hotel, but could not enjoy the wonderful Castle due to just too many people there on the Saturday evening. Had we stayed Sunday/Monday I expect we would have awarded 5 stars.

    « Murder Mystery Night »

I had done a murder mystery quite a few years ago and went to a one at this place on 7 December 2017 and took my cousin along with me as a treat for her. The place when we arrived gave a warm welcome and when we asked about the place where we went for the event were told we were early and directed to a place where we could haverefreshments before the thing started. When the event started it was well run and the even itself was planned well and arranged well so the meal was served at good times and the mains parts of the murder you were able to watch. The food served on the event was outstanding and really well cooked and I have food allergies and I contacted them about this when I called about my menu and they heard what I said and on the night they actually remembered and asked if I was the one that ordered the menu that was for food allergies. I will highly recommend this place for food and events as I am going to another of the murder mystery events next year.

    « Pleasant stay »

We had a nice room for the bargain price but next time I would pay extra for larger room. It was clean and we basically just slept there for night so it was fine but if I was staying longer I would want a larger room. I can't say enough positive comments about the staff, they were helpful, friendly and very polite.

« What a wonderful location and stay! »

Absolutely amazing experience, a wonderful stay during a weekend road trip, stayed in the four post bedroom at top floor. Not sure about dinner as did not dine there but the breakfast was nice and filling. Wonderful setting and kind staff, thank you!

    « Wonderful stay »

My husband and I arrived amidst a snowy blizzard and were immediately met with a warm welcome from the receptionist. A very quick book in and we arrived at our first floor room in the castle. The room was small but beautiful and had everything we needed. The staircase up to room was spectacular. We went to the Farmers bar and restaurant, Sat in front of a huge log burner and relaxed. Callum and Katie were our staff and were brilliant, a real credit to the place. The evening meal was wonderful. Another guest had ordered the special, a rump steak, it looked that good we ordered the same. It was beautifully cooked, the Diane sauce was bliss, crisp onion rings.... My only complaint....wished we had booked two nights! We will be back. The staff are a credit to the owners and Best Western.

    « A Real Treat. »

We stayed on a single night stop over thinking it would be a bit different and something of a treat. A very good choice. The Castle itself is an imposing building steeped in history. The food, evening meal and breakfast, was excellent and the staff friendly and helpful. We stayed in the West Wing in what was a small room with limited storage space which wasn't really an issue on a short stay. The bathroom looked almost new and was spotlessly clean. When we arrived the room was cold with the radiator only ever seeming to get lukewarm. Once we had found the fan heater in the drawer with the Tea and Coffee it soon became comfortable.

    « WOW »

Arriving in a Blizzard the Hotel was easy to find and very Impressive. The booking in was quick and efficient. The room was nice no problem with cold as other reviews have said. The Hotel itself is a magnificent building and the atmosphere is spot on. As I said we arrived in a Blizzard and the roaring fires were a welcome sight. The Staff really made the stay perfect , especially Callum and Katie in the Farmers Bar and restaurant they were so nice and Helpful and willing to go the extra mile, including an guided impromptu trip into the Dungeons. A Lovely place with lovely people We will be staying here again and I have already been recommending the Hotel to anyone who'd listen.

    « Customer Service Excellence »

We stayed at Walworth Castle Hotel for the Durham Lumiere Festival and it was an absolute pleasure to be there. The staff were extremely attentive and nothing was any trouble at all. We were extremely impressed and look forward to staying there again.

    « Cold »

We won an overnight stay so should give it 5 stars. But if I was paying this review reflects that. Great service at reception. Room was cold radiators barely got warm even though on full. Also additional heater but was still cold. Food in the restaurant disappointing. I expected better. We had duck pancakes and chorizo which was ok nothing flash. Got a little confused by description for 21 day old steak. When asked what steaks they had. Waiter said it's description for the lamb, surf n turf and gammon. We had lamb which was quite fatty and the trio of pork. Very limited menu I thought didn't want a parmo or a burger. Breakfast was the best bit. Beautiful castle and grounds but in need of tlc and a good menu.

    « Walworth Suite »

Have just spent a wonderful night at the Castle staying in their Walworth Suite. It was such a treat, fluffy dressing gowns, and complimentary toiletries, a lovely comfy sitting room and a fabulous four-poster bed. We ate here last night and the meal was first class. The hotel staff are nice and friendly and very helpful, will definitely be back.

    « Wonderful »

4th visit here. Lovely welcome from 'Susan' who excelled at customer service and is a credit to the establishment. We had a poor meal somewhere else before visiting for the evening and were still peckish, Susan organised for us to have a light bite. Room 9 again which is lovely. Slightly cold on arrival but we plugged extra heater in and it soon warmed up and during night we didnt leave this on but room was nice and warm. Again bathroom very cold though - too cold for shower. Didnt spoil our stay though. Had a food with bottle of wine. Nice friendly cosy atmosphere, very attentive waitress and waiter but not intrusive. Very quiet on a night so good sleep. Lovely breakfast - in fact amazing taste! Well done Walworth we will be back

    « Daughter's wedding »

Stayed here for 2 nights 3rd and 4th November, for my daughter's wedding reception on the 4th. I can not fault a thing, from checking in until leaving. Reception staff very attentive and professional, room spotless and well equipped. Breakfast both days cooked fresh to order and served hot on warmed plates. The wedding was faultless with all staff being very attentive. The room presentation was as requested, the food was simply amazing, (compliments to the chef and kitchen staff), service was second to none. I simply can not find fault with anything. I will definitely be recommending this hotel/venue and hope to re visit in the not too distant future

    « It's a castle! »

This hotel looks very imposing as you enter the grounds. It is near to Darlington and has a superb Bird of Prey centre on the grounds. There is ample parking, and the building itself is full of character. We were in one of the turret suites and it was lovely, with a 4 poster bed and a large lounge area. A few reviews have commented on the temperature in the rooms , and it has to be said the sleeping area was a bit chilly at night. There was a supplementary heater which was good, but this is something they should look at improving. Other than that though it was a first class stay. Breakfast was great, with all the usual choices. The evening meals were also good, but for my other half, a larger choice of vegetarian options would have been welcomed. The hotel staff were very helpful and pleasant and we really enjoyed our stay.

    « Wedding venue »

Booked this for my daughter's wedding absolutely fantastic. The castle itself is lovely all the rooms different. I stayed in a four poster family suite along with my daughter granddaughter and niece the night before the wedding it was lovely very big and full of character. My daughter and her "husband" stayed in the king James suite ( bridal suite) which was absolutely gorgeous with a separate lounge which was fitted with every amenity also a beautiful four poster bedroom and jacuzzi bathroom. The wedding planner from the hotel was fantastic she did a really good job everything ran to plan, the food for the wedding reception was lovely a good menu, well cooked and certainly good portions! Grounds of hotel lovely for photographs and there is a facility for outdoor ceremonies. Another extra was the birds of prey the wedding rings were flown in by an owl and presented to the best man on a cushion a very nice touch. The evening reception food again was plentiful and with good varieriety. Thank you to the staff at walworth you have given us a day to remember.

What a gorgeous setting for getting away from it all. Our room was changed to a double from a twin within minutes of us mentioning it to the lovely Susan. Bar staff were very friendly and chatty and food in Farmers restaurant was very good. I would definitely visit again

« Good, but minor problems »

Heating not working in the room, so had to use a fan heater. It was reported but nothing was done. The bathroom mirror was set far too low - I had to almost kneel down to see in it. I was woken up at 4am by the thump of music - it seems that it was the music in the empty restaurant!!

« Nice surroundings, good food »

We spent one night here but wish that we had more time. It's in a great location. We had a standard room in the castle but it had been fully updated. Unfortunately it was quite cold and the heater never really met the challenge. Staff offered to bring in electric heaters but that was not desired. The bathroom faces a parking area, the window had no curtain or cover, and the shower is a clear glass stall - it is advised that they install a shade or other optional covering for those of us who prefer more privacy, The bedroom window had curtains... The food in their restaurant was great. We generally avoid restaurants that are supported by hotels but in this can it was a great meal (smoked haddock) and we're glad we 'dined in'.

    « wonderful weekend »

We spent two nights at this hotel in a castle room. From arrival to departure we received excellent service - Susan the head receptionist arranged our booking and was efficient, helpful and extremely pleasant. Kim, the receptionist on arrival was also lovely and informative, I could not complain about any of the staff. Our room was clean, spacious and the bed comfortable- there is a choice of pillows available which was a plus. The breakfast menu was considerable and difficult to choose from as there was a great variety and we enjoyed our dinner also. We hope to visit again soon.

    « Castle for a kings ransom »

We booked this hotel for a night and we were welcomed when we arrived and as usual we filled out the paperwork and signature. Then was asked to do that thing of marking a credit card for £100 for breakages. It's funny we don't get that in asked in other hotels these days. Anyway we liked our standard room it good for short stays. There are other great huge rooms but be prepared to pay the Kings ransom for those rooms. The location is beautiful and great grounds. The bed was clean and the bedding was nice and soft. The TV in the room is great quality. They serve breakfast and dinner which is reasonable choice of dishes. The staff were courteous and helpful. I have never stayed at a castle before and I enjoy the experience.

    « Don't judge a book by it's cover..the cover is amazing(on the outside) ,the room-Not so much. »

We stayed for one night in the hotel. The hotel and grounds has an amazing atmosphere . the internal decor has reminiscent of old times , unfortunately amenities also suffer from being poorly maintained throughout the years. Check in was fast enough.the room we got suffered from a few major issues all concerning the shower/toilet. Lack of proper/minimal maintenance is apparent in every aspect : The door doesn't close unless extensive force is applied, then it shuts with a large banging noise...Toilet seat is not tight and moves freely. there are two separate faucets for hot and cold water, and the shower faucet offers the choice of very hot water or burning hot water...no option of mixing in some cold water...also the faucet almost got ripped of the wall while struggling to find the correct position not to get burns(we couldn't find any). it was too late an we were too tired to complain ,and since it was only for 1 night we stated our complaints only at check-out. The breakfast was very good and sufficient, the restaurant was warm and comfy.

    « Astonishly Appalling »

Seriously cannot believe the appalling experience we had here. On arrival the receptionist gave us very divided attention and was more interested in speaking to her colleague than checking us in. Checked into our room, drink in bar then went up to shower. Toilet was in an absolutely disgusting state - mentioned this to reception staff who took no time in telling me that cleaning staff had all gone home and she definitely would not be doing cleaning herself. She did to be fair offer a room upgrade (really!!). but as I tried to explain, did not really want inconvenience of moving rooms, merely a clean toilet and not one that looks like it's been used month long at a festival. Spoke to Manager who offered to move our things but could not seem to appreciate that I was not happy to lave this task to his staff, based on our bathroom cleanliness experience. Shame as there are some hard working pleasant staff here who are all making up for exceptionally unhelpful, rude, uncaring lady on the Reception desk. This is an experience I would not wish to repeat and would recommend avoiding at all costs.

    « Poor hygiene »

Hotel very quaint but seems to be lack of wuality control in hygiene... my sister's room the toilet was mosy obviously not cleaned. Staff were not available to do clean and could only offer room swap as recompense at inconvenience to guests. Attitude of reception staff really regrettable.

We visited Walworth castle for an overnight stay on Thursday 28th Sep 2017. We arranged our stay with Susan, who is the head receptionist, she was so friendly, professional and exceptionally helpful and went out of her way to meet up with us after our arrival. All the staff were very professional and friendly taking time to stop and chat we were greeted by Kim, a very friendly receptionist who ensured our check in & check out was quick and efficient and explained were we would find lounges, restaurants etc Paige took excellent care of us in the afternoon and during our evening meal ensuring every little detail was perfect. Our food was tasty well presented and hot. Our room was a tower suite large and spacious with a separate lounge and a four poster bed. Every room had fabulous views of the grounds and country side it was clean and tidy with toiletries towels and robes supplied. Wa arrived on motorbikes and we were welcomed by every one even the owner took photographs of the bikes parked outside the castle I can highly recommend a visit either to stay over or just for a meal, Sunday lunch or afternoon tea, there is a park for children to play in and the birds of prey is worth a visit Thank you susan and your team for making our stay pleasurable and putting a smile back on our faces we will be back soon Andrea & Stephen Gilchrist x

« Never had a more perfect hotel stay »

I stayed here only one night. This hotel nailed every criteria for a great stay: great staff, great room, great bed, great shower, great supper, great breakfast. If something could have been done better, I don't know what it is. My only regret is that I was in the area for only one night. I certainly hope to return and to stay longer.

My wife and I went to stay in Walworth Castle expecting a great time. Unfortunately my wife had a medical issue but the staff were excellent. 2 first aiders came to help her and 1 sat with her until the ambulance arrived. After a visit to A & E we returned to the hotel and all the staff were asking about her health and really cared. Very inspiring. The room was excellent, the food was out of this world and the staff were better still. We are planning to return again (this time without the A & E bit!!!!!). Thank you.

    « Lovely anniversary stay »

We booked a couple of nights stay for our anniversary and we were not disappointed. The location and grounds were lovely but you do need a car to get out and about as it is tucked down a country lane. From the minute we arrived we were made to feel welcome. We were booked into the west wing of the castle and although the room was small (No: 11) it was clean. You may need to pack a jumper as it did get a wee bit chilly but then you are in a castle so to be expected. There was a wedding on the Saturday so a little noisy in the evening but it didn't spoil our stay. On Sunday we had the carvery which was absolutely delicious and very reasonably priced. On a personal note the only down side for me was the pillows - they were too hard and I ended up with a stiff neck. We will be going back again at some point and next time we'll book a castle room

    « Walworth Castle Hotel »

Hotel is beautiful, but the rooms are a bit of a let down. We paid £130 for a room which although was clean and tidy, was over -priced simply because it had a four poster bed in and other furniture which simply did not work. We couldn't see out of or open the window, as it was too high!

« Wish I had longer to stay »

My partner and I came here for a wedding. Let's start with that - a beautiful occasion, with beautiful surroundings. An ideal place to marry someone!! The food was lovely too. Our room - room 7 is a great size and the bed was very large and also very comfortable. Breakfast is definitely worth the extra, especially as you'd have a good drive to get anything and you'd not get the quality. My only gripe is the coffee was instant and I'd expect better from somewhere like this. All of the staff we came into contact were extremely friendly and the reception was very helpful. The only downside is that we can't stay here long enough to enjoy it as we're heading off on holiday the day after the wedding which means a stupid o'clock wake up :( Overall if we're back up this way in the future I'll definitely look at booking here again.

    « Wedding day disaster »

Unfortunately after nearly two years of planning, our wedding day at Walworth wasn't what we were dreaming of little help in the build up to the day, our favours had to be changed after we had bought them miniature cork bottles with a shot in, when we had booked this was allowed before changing the terms in the run up to the wedding we accepted it eventually and had to buy other stuff, i wasnt allowed to put my photo booth were it would go best instead it was crammed in the corner were it wasnt utilised to its potential with the food and the sweets trolley, the singer we had during the day was put in the wrong place after i had said any chance of rain for her to be inside they set her up outside in the pavilion too late by the time we had arrived to move her and it rained heavily everyone was inside and she was out side by her self, so everyone only got a glimpse of the piano player more money wasted, the food was beautiful, the service wasn't, it was good on the top table just not others and some staff were very helpful, we just tried to ignore all this and enjoy our day which eventually by the night we did but after returning from our honeymoon recently we have found out a member of our wedding party had been BLACKMAILED into paying 360 pound, for a noise incident the night before with the threat of closing the wedding down on the night, so he didn't want to ruin our special day so he paid it to the manager on the morning and kept quiet, we as a couple are incomplete shock we had just got over the day and accepted it but finding out this information has made us want to warn others that once they have your money its too late. which is a shame because its a beautiful castle, beautiful location and has the potential to be one of the best venues in the northeast im honestly devastated I feel like I could never go there again and its were our dreams were meant to come true and were we married guttered.

    « Ok! »

Stayed one night here which only cost me £75 for 2 of us. The hotel and grounds are really nice and the food in the restaurant was lovely with good prices. The room we stayed in was in the Annex bit, it was a little small especially the bathroom. I would warn anyone staying at this hotel that they will pre-authorise your debit card £100 at check in so be aware as this was not made aware to us until check in when the lady advised she need to a hold a debit card which we gave her but she didnt advise what she was doing with it in the end we found out she was preauthorising £100 on my card! which is ridiculous especially when we paid less than that to stay there! 5 days later the funds went back into my account!! I did speak to the manager about this which was pointless as all she did was blame my bank for how long it took to go back into my account. We did have a nice a stay but I wouldnt stay here again because of this.

    « Ok for eskimo's »

Where to start, booked through late rooms paid £96.50 for b&b. When we arrived at the hotel to check in the reception area was full with wedding guests we were checked in by Susan who was lovely we got to our room no5 which was situated in the annex it was a small room but it was adequate, however it was a bit nippy we looked for heating controls but there was just a radiator with a thermostat. When we went down for a drink before dinner we asked at reception and were told the heating is set at the hotel and was on a timer. We ordered drinks and sat in the lounge we had just sat down when one of the waiters asked if we were with the wedding which we replied no, to which he replied ,you might want to move there are 50 boisterous wedding guests going to invade this area so we moved into the restaurant! We ordered our food which was mediocre we were looking forward to a nice quiet meal which we didn't get as we had the pounding music from the wedding reception. After out food we went back to our room which was still freezing cold we decided on a early night however we didn't get much sleep due to the cold we got up early went for breakfast which again was ok but very dry. I thought at check out when we were asked how our stay was I was let them know but oh no at no point were we asked how we slept? Did we enjoy our stay? Was everything ok? So no not a great stay and we will not be returning!

« Lord of the manor »

Another night out with work. Easy to find situated on the road with a gravel drive leading in to the carpark. I signed in and had a friendly chat with the lady on reception, whose name I didn't ask. Very remiss of me. After dumping my baggage in my room I had a quick shower and headed down to the restaurant for food, and a cold beer. The staff were friendly, courteous and helpful. The food was as expensive as you'd expect in a castle and very tasty. After eating I purchased another cold beer and went outside to catch the last rays of sunshine. A well set out seating area with a covered smoking area should you need one. I went for a little walk around, although it was too late in the day to check out the birds of prey showing. After this I retired to my boudoir where I made a culpa, listened to some music and read a couple of chapters of my book. A comfortable bed, with a duvet, I'm not a big fan of duvets. But I prevailed and had a comfortable nights sleep. Again I was away too early to avail myself of the breakfast.

Great 1 night stop over. Fantastic building and setting - one of a kind! Staff all very helpful and friendly. Food in the restaurant was good value and hearty portions. I was alone as it was a business trip on this occasion but there seems plenty for young kids on the grounds and a falconry centre which I will certainly check out next time! All in all - I would recommend in a heartbeat.

« Walworth Castle Hotel, well worth a return and another stay! »

Having first stayed at Walworth Castle Hotel late last year and having enjoyed a relaxing time there, we were drawn back again last week, albeit only for the one night on this occasion, but we were equally impressed. On our last visit we were in the perfectly adequate annexe building, but this time we were accommodated in a really nice room in the castle building. All the staff as before were very pleasant and looked after our every need. Afternoon coffee in the impressive lounge as well as an excellent dinner and breakfast were again thoroughly enjoyed. Walworth is ideally situated just a short drive away from Darlington which is a pleasant and vibrant place to visit with a wide range of shops. Hope to return here again in the not too distant future, for a longer break. Highly Recommend!

« Top spot in a quiet country location »

The main building in the hotel is the one with character and worht selecting a larger foom there rather than a standard room in the annex. This place certainly has olde worlde atmosphere. Wifi works well, there is plenty of hot water in the shower and free parking is available onsite. All of the staff were extremely friendly, helpful, and obviously well trained. Breakfast provided a good range of interesting and tasty offerings. We ate in the restaurant on two consecutive nights, partly out of convenience given the hotel's location. We were realy surprised at the quality of the food. It was cooked to perfection and matched in its presentation. For anyone interested, there is a bird of prey sanctuary in the hotel grounds, with flying displays at different times throughout the day.

    « Dream Wedding »

My daughter had her wedding breakfast and evening reception at Walworth Castle on Wednesday 9th August 2017. To be honest I really don't know where to start. The wedding was 2 years in the planning, so as you can appreciate enough time to really get to know the staff and experience the overall service. I am going to attempt to describe in several chosen words how we felt from the initial viewing to the actual booking of the venue and our experience on the big day. We were always treated as honoured guests at Walworth and as if our wedding was the first ever to be organised by Walworth. Nothing was too much trouble. Ailsa, Events Manager, our main point of contact always greeted us with a friendly smile, put us at our ease and made us feel welcome at all times. Her people and communication skills were at all times extremely professional and replies to my many, many emails were always done in a prompt and timely manner. As the main organiser of my daughter's wedding and being a bit of a control freak in terms of details, the staff at Walworth always indulged me and accommodated my every request. I don't know what training programme the staff are on but every member without exception were amazing. In fact that was the deciding factor when choosing a venue. My daughter and I visited and considered many venues but the staff at Walworth pipped all other venues to the post. Manager Michael looked after and was our Toast Master on the day and under his leadership our day ran like clockwork. Every detail of our day was carried out with meticulous precision enabling us all the luxury of knowing we were all in safe, organised hands allowing us to relax and enjoy our special day. I could really write a novel on the exceptional service we experienced. The food was delicious, beautifully presented and served in a 5 star manner. The venue is stunning, spotlessly maintained and accommodation extremely comfortable and the staffs are some of the best I have ever come across. A special mention I feel should also go to Liam, who worked tireless to look after us and ensure we were catered for into the evening of the wedding. I would have no hesitation in recommending Walworth Castle if you are looking for that little something extra special when planning your special event. A very delighted Mother of The Bride, Alison Cochlan

    « Great Stop-over En-Route to Scotland »

As a pre-amble we had a long journey to Scotland and wanted somewhere to not only break the journey but also be in a district that was worth visiting in its own right - and of course provide comfortable accommodation. Walworth Castle scored highly in all three areas. Getting there with a sat nav was relatively straight forward with quite a few direction signs to the hotel spotted en-route. In a very rural scenic area with an impressive entrance coming onto the driveway. On arrival we were thrilled to have a free upgrade to the main castle as we had a long standing Best Western card. The reception staff were outstanding and very helpful. It felt like going back into history going up the stair case past a beautiful stained glass window (with an ominous warning in Latin saying do not sleep whilst on duty!) and a rather curious chair. The room itself was huge, very clean with a four poster bed - although the bed was a bit high to get into! Quality fittings and a good shower/ bathroom. Internet was OK as well. We had dinner and breakfast at the hotel. All perfectly adequate and there was evidence of thought being taken to use local ingredients. The restaurant staff were very polite and dealt well with a disgruntled person who seemed to think that they could get away with a free breakfast when their package did not include one!. I suspect that he was one of many guests who had come for a wedding. - clearly a good location for a wedding and the room for the wedding looked really well decked out. There is an unmarked nature trail with a large duck pond in the wood in the extensive grounds. There is also a raptor centre run by an engaging and friendly enthusiast. Refreshed and raring to resume our journey to Scotland, we had a quick check out and departure with no traffic to contend with (that usually accompanies city centre stop-overs).

    « A perfect wedding »

We recently married at Walworth Castle and it is hard to find the words to describe how perfect this was. From the first time that we visited the castle we instantly fell in love with the location. The castle offered a stunning backdrop for the day. The wedding organizer Ailsa is so lovely and was such a help every step of the way. Nothing was ever too much. The staff in general were very helpful and could not do enough for us. Food has been top notch every time that we have dined at the castle and the wedding day was no different. The rooms were immaculate and our stay was an absolute pleasure. The wedding to us was perfection and this in our minds is down to both the physical location and all of the staff. We (and our guests) have left with some very special memories that will stay with us for a lifetime. A big thank you to all at the Castle!

    « Perfect setting. »

This hotel is simply stunning, the Ground and the architecture are beautiful. The staff are lovely, friendly and helpful. Car park is easily accessible and lots of room. A lovely night stay. The room its self looked lovely but I was expecting and felt for the money it should have been finished to a higher stranded. The shower was shocking. Very intermittent in pressure and temperature the walls were very thin and the bath room looked tired. I would stay there again but I would book a room in the main area and not in the west wing.

    « Amazing place »

I have stayed at this wonderful hotel on about 8 occasions and cannot rate it highly enough!! As a travelling coeliac, good food that is safe to eat is a must - and these guys never let mr down!! They've even (politely) refused to serve me something that turned out not to be gluten free. They have GF Bread in for me as well now and the staff are all so polite and friendly. I wouldnt dream of staying anywhere else now!!!!

    « Poorest stay yet »

We have stayed a number of times over the years and have always gone back. This was our worst and probably last stay. From initially when we were told there was no record of our booking to the abruptness of some staff, mouldy bread for breakfast, an uncomfortable bed and intermittent internet it was not a good final night of our weeks family holiday.

    « Wedding »

We have just had our wedding at Walworth Castle and I can't speak highly enough. From the 1st meeting a year ago with Ailsa right up to the last drink we were treated like royalty. The food was amazing and everyone commented on how amazing it tasted. Nothing was too much trouble. Callum who looked after us was fantastic. All the staff were wonderful. We love Walworth and can't wait to come back.

« Great service, fab food and wonderful surroundings »

We visited for a night in August. It was my partners 40th birthday and we had stayed at other castles in the north east previously. The castle is impressive to behold and the welcome from reception was warm and friendly. Our room had a four poster bed and looked across to the birds of prey centre. The room was well presented, clean and functional. I requested an iron and one was quickly brought to the room. At one point I realised I had left my shaving bag at home and the reception staff gave me a complementary set so I didn't have to drive off to find one (much appreciated). Dinner was in the farmers restaurant, I had the chorizo in red wine and it was a delightful starter. My partner and I had the same main course - the steak and Guinness pie - again very appetising. Our desserts of Yorkshire pudding and tiramisu were served quickly and delicious (wish the tiramisu was a little larger but hey) The bed was comfortable and gave us a good nights sleep. Breakfast was again in the farmers restaurant. A buffet for cereal, pastry and juices. Table service for the cooked menu. I would have preferred to have been asked my preference of eggs as it came with fried egg but that is all I could fault in the meal. Would come back again, looked fantastic as a wedding venue.

    « Nephews wedding »

Imposing castle on arrival. Reception area beautiful for the wedding, friendly bar staff. Room £148 B & B plus £15 x 2 for two extra beds, 1 single, one sofa bed. £178 for a very average room with a dangerously high step up to go into bathroom. On a very serious note, we noticed that although high in the room the windows could be opened wide, from which a child or adult could potentially fall from, bearing in mind we were on the second floor. There should be something on them to allow them to open only slightly. Plenty of choice for breakfast, but waited 45 minutes for cooked, while friends waited 1hr 10mins, and it was not a busy time. Some of the breakfast staff (although polite) could barely raise a smile, which wasn't very welcoming. OK but expected more for what we paid. Room 33

    « A special treat »

Myself and my wife visited to see the birds of prey but decided to see if there where any rooms available, I mentioned it was my wife and mine30th wedding anniversary and we where offered the bridal suite at a much reduced cost. All we could say was WOW when we walked in it was superb and the evening meal was delightful. There was one or two small niggles but overall we had a wonderful nights stay.

    « Bad smell / small bed. »

Attended a wedding here. Fantastic food, wonderful friendly staff, beautiful castle & grounds. One massive downside - room 14.(West wing) The room was small, the bed was small, the smell of damp was overpowering. When booking the room we asked for a ground floor room suitable for a disabled person as my husband has MS. So why would you put someone in a room where the only access to a shower is to climb into the bath. I think this is where the damp smell was coming from as there was black mould running along the floor at the base of the bath. Lots of cobwebs also in the bedroom. We were lucky if we had an hours sleep at the most. We forced ourselves to stay and at least have the breakfast after spending £97 for B & B, we wanted to get something for our money.

« nice rooms and unexpected good food »

Although not really medieval, it was a very nice castle and we especially enjoyed our room beacuse of the individuallity. In most hotels you only notice you'e in the wrong room because your partner looks so different. We were lucky to discover a Public Footpath which brought us in the hilly landscape where the sunset on the recently mewn field made a spectacular view and it made me really happy.

« Beautiful castle, Fantastic staff »

Recently spent a night in the bridal suite with private dining in the library tower and couldn't be more happy. I booked through the events department as I also proposed to my now fiancee and wanted to make everything special and that was definitely accomplished. Jessica Todd made sure everything was set up brilliantly (rose petals on the bed etc.) and all staff made us feel very welcome and made a huge fuss of us. Clean and comfy suite, beautiful building and grounds, excellent staff. We will definitely be considering Walworth Castle for our wedding or any other event.

    « Wedding Reception »

We have just spent a fantastic weekend at Walworth Castle for the occasion of our Daughter and her new Husband's wedding reception. The whole experience, from start to finish, was faultless. All members of staff were polite, professional and efficient and nothing was too much trouble for them. Special thanks to the catering staff who provided the day and evening food to a high standard. The Castle is a beautiful building inside and out. It has remarkable, well-kept grounds outside, looking out onto open countryside. The youngsters loved the play area. Our rooms in the new-build were light, spacious and comfortable. The choice of menu at breakfast was very good. We would not hesitate to recommend Walworth Castle to others looking for a wedding venue. Well done.

« Beautiful setting, decor not in keepng with buiding. »

Stayed in Hansard Suite, room 30. Top floor, castle building. 3 flights stairs, no lift. No offer to assist with luggage. Open door into what I can only describe as a room styled like a council flat. Large room, high ceiling cobbled together styles of furniture and not in keeping with age or style of building. Bedroom, large round, in turret but sparsely furnished again. Worst bed ever I've slept in. Ended up on sofa in lounge. Only saving grace about this room was the bathroom was spotless and plenty of hot water. No bottled water in room, no complimentary slippers to go with ?? clean robes. Friends stayed and had Jennison suite which looked much better with spa bath, clean carpet and only one flight of stairs. Both paid same price. Food was good, and staff where friendly. Unfortunately would not consider this place again.

« Beautiful property, but avoid the cheap rooms (West Wing) »

We needed a hotel in/near Darlington for just 1 night and were both wowed when this property came up in the search results. I have stayed at a few Best Western hotels on business in my time but none that looked like this. We booked directly via the BW website; as could not see any price benefits going through 3rd parties like Booking.com. Our check in was smooth and quick. The room, in the West Wing (#11) was small, very small, but as we were only staying a night - with most of the afternoon/evening to be spent out at a family do - that was fine. After dropping our bags in the room and taking a brief walk around the grounds we were peckish so took in some afternoon tea (tea/coffee and scones to die for), however it took an age to find someone afterwards to settle the bill with. When we returned in the evening we tried to settle down but frankly the bed was one of the worst we have ever experienced. Not only very soft but we both sank in towards the middle. The OH was up about 4am and went to sit in the car, I continued to toss and turn to find a comfortable position but when the alarm went off at 0730 I felt I had not had a great Knights sleep. Breakfast was typical BW fayre, though the "traditional" Black Pudding was a bit too traditional for my (southerner) liking. Otherwise, it was well cooked, plus there was a good selection of cereals and juices. Though again staff were rarely seen as the kitchen was so far away. We cannot fault the location and ambiance, and cannot state whether the rooms in the main building suffer the same problems, but won't be booking again when ever back up that way

« Could have been so much better »

I'm a little bit torn with this hotel and review .I have stayed in a few Best Westerns now so I am becoming used to their quirks . I believe I could have given it 5 stars but you have to get the basics right and treat your clientele like adults . This Hotel is impressive as you drive in . It looks imposing and grand and the grounds are extremely well manicured . The reception staff are very friendly , efficient and welcoming. The reception area is nice bright and clean . We stayed in room 30 .This is a suite and has a lounge with Flat screen TV , bedroom with flat screen TV and separate Bathroom that has a both a bath and shower over it . It's located in one of the turrets and has some nice views of the grounds and surrounding countryside. The decor is slightly eclectic with a mixture of modern furniture and an imposing four poster bed but its still a very nice suite of rooms . The water was hot and the shower adequate for our needs and the room was spotlessly clean . We stayed two nights and there was no noise to keep us awake .( although sleep was not pleasant and I'll explain why later) .There were two couples and our friends had room 16 which was equally as impressive . We all had four excellent meals in the Farmers restaurant , service was good and price reasonable. Breakfast on the first morning was very good with an excellent full English and variations served to all four of us .The second morning was more hit and miss as we had to practically clear our own table to sit down in what was not a busy time . The Food however was again excellent .Free Wifi is also a bit hit and miss but I guess Castle walls will do that for you . The reason I have given this hotel an average rating is two fold . Firstly , this was a 60th birthday treat and we had brought a bottle of expensive champagne to drink in the room with our friends . I asked at reception if I could have a bucket of ice to chill it down a bit and was very politely told I could not consume food or drink not bought at the hotel in the rooms . It is written on your check in form but I was unaware . This is a petty, money grabbing rip off by Best western and quite frankly cheapens the whole franchise . I am sure it is in place to stop people ordering in Pizza or Chinese to their room but surely there can be some discretion . We bought a £20 bottle of wine with our meal so its not like you can avoid the exorbitant prices is it . Then there was the bed . This four poster bed may well be from the 18th century but did I really have to have an 18th Century mattress . This was the most uncomfortable bed me and my wife have ever slept in . It was lumpy , you could feel the springs and it sunk in the middle . ( It's no Hypnos I can tell you ) . Shamefully I perhaps didn't notice it as much on the first night due to alcohol ( otherwise I would have complained ) but on the second night I certainly did. I was going to mention this at reception as we checked out but no one asked me how our stay was so quite frankly I couldn't be bothered . Shame really as I said , this hotel could be so much better .

    « Nice 1 night stopover »

I booked this last minute and wasn't expecting much as I was staying in the west wing and had read some negative comments regarding the rooms. I have to say was very happy with the room and thought the bed and breakfast rate was excellent value. The staff were also lovely and apologies to the young boy I gave a hard time to when my request for a couple of wine glasses was refused. I have never encountered this before. We planned to have a glass of wine in the room before heading to the bar but the hotel has a policy of no outside food or beverages to be consumed on the premises. I understand this for the bar and restaurant but not in your room. I didn't realise until the next morning I had signed that agreement on arrival - always read the fine print! All in all good value and we did enjoy a bottle of wine in the bar, would stay again.

    « Enchanting! »

My wife and I stayed in the castle part of the best western and loved it! Don't let the chain name discourage you from this beautiful place. A little expensive but well worth it in the Yorkshire region located near a sheep farm. The castle was built in 1189 and has quite a history. The room was huge with a living room and separate bedroom within the rook!

« Lovely hotel, shame about the drinks prices »

We booked a 2-night, weekend Superbreak as part of my belated birthday celebration. The hotel is imposing on approach and I would be interested in the history of the building. The receptionist on duty when we arrived was very helpful and the booking-in process was very easy. There was a wedding reception in progress when we arrived and it had got to the post-meal noisy stage and I was a bit worried about noise in our room. However, our room was in a single-storey annexe, well away from the noise and bustle. The room was basic but more than OK for 2 nights, including free wi-fi in the room. Breakfast was in the Farmers Restaurant. It was serve-yourself starter with table service for the main breakfast. There was a really good choice of dishes. The only drawback? £15+ for a double gin/tonic and a bottle of Bulmers.

« 5* as Issue with service of meal was acknowledged and addressed »

Have stayed here a few times as I use best western a lot (diamond reward card holder) and the hotel has met my expectations every time however on this occasion it has been mixed. On arrival I was greeted at reception and check in was smooth. Was given a Room upgrade without question. Room was in the main Castle building and a very nice room. Went to the farmers bar for a pint and do some work on laptop later returned to farmers bar to eat got a pint at bar and was given a menu, cutlery at my table and then ignored for next 30 minutes. 2 other tables nearby were visited and orders placed and served. After I finished my pint I went to bar for another and enquired when some one was going to take my food order. I was adressed by the barmaid with I'm sorry and by the barman with "we have been busy". The bar staff asked me where I would like to sit so they could open a tab on that table. So no excuse for not coming over to my table in the ensuing 30 minutes to take my food order. In my opinion a case of poor customer service. Raised the above with reception and Order for food eventually taken at 7.10 Starter served at 7.25. Main course served at 7.45. 7.52 barman presented me with a complimentary pint as a good will gesture for the earlier poor service. Food once it was served was good quality and good value for money. What is refreshing is that this hotel reacted in the right way and addressed the issue and turned an unpleasant experience into a pleasureable one. Recommend if in the area pop in and give it a try.

« Romantic Location; Great Staff »

Stayed with family and friends. Beautiful, quiet location off the beaten track. Highly unique experience with lots of history to it. Check in was easy. The restaurant was wonderful - reasonably priced and kid friendly. The room was huge (Stayed in the old bridal suite). A great place to relax. Very helpful staff eager to please with no request too big or small. E.G. After leaving, we discovered my daughter left her IPad in the room. Kim and her manager went the extra mile to have it express mailed to me. Thanks to the cleaning staff for their honesty and to Kim for sticking with it to solve the issue.

« Most beautifull setting for a very romantic hotel! »

This would make such a perfect wedding location! The towers! The grounds! We stayed in the annex for one night on the way to Durham. The linen was crisp. The bed was HUGE! Really HUGE! And very comfortable. The room was good size. It was a bit tired and shabby, but not unpleasant: has seen better days, but for the price it well exceed my expectations! We love the breakfast too. Oh, the black pudding was extra nice! I would most certainly stay here again. A lovely quirky place!

« Unfortuantely you get what you pay for »

Travelled to Scotland for the weekend. Booked 1 night at Walworth Castle. Very impressive when driving into the entrance, although I did remark to my husband 'I bet we're staying in the 70's annexe' (not seen in their site details) which was indeed the case. No heating at all in the bathroom. Cannot imagine staying here in the winter. Asked at reception re heating and was told to find a very small electrical heater in one of the cupboards along with the usual tray tea/coffee. The shower did not work just dribbled, so hand held the shower-head. Water was either boiling or tepid. The restaurant meal can only be described as 'bad pub food' which if not so sad could have been funny. One redeeming feature was the STAFF. All very young and very polite. I felt sorry for them they must do an awful lot of apologising to the guests at Walworth Castle Hotel. Will not be going back.

    « Night away treat »

We booked a night away as a treat to this beautiful hotel and were not disappointed. On arrival we were initially disappointed with our room as I had requested a shower as my hubby has mobility issues,I returned to reception to see if they could help. I was overwhelmed when they were so kind to be able to give us such a beautiful room, it really was such a special treat. We sat outside enjoying the sunshine before going for dinner. My hubby had a steak which was cooked to perfection, I had the Barnsley chop which I really enjoyed, and we both had just enough room for an ice cream later. We also enjoyed trying a couple of gins, the Pinkster with raspberries has become a firm favourite already.

    « A return visit - after 30 years »

OK, so it was 30 years since I was last here. Yes, I have moved on and on reflection, so has the hotel - but in a different direction. The double room was tiny - about 18 inches either side of the bed. This was in their annex, a good 100 yards away from reception. The food was average, mainly from frozen and the wine choices were poor, as was the wine. I could get better in a discounter like Aldi. I am not coming back

« A four poster in a castle..such things as dreams are made of... »

A real castle and a good hotel. Lovely setting and great grounds.Room was huge, bed comfortable and bathroom clean and towels fluffy. Ate in the Farmers restaurant twice. Food was served in plentiful portions. I had lamb and it was the tastiest I have had for a long time. The service from Tony on the first night and Andrew the other was exemplary. Even our room service order was carried up a lot of stairs by two cheerful ladies. Jess on reception is the epitome of a customer facing member of staff. Smiling, helpful and competent. She, like all the other staff were certainly the best dressed staff equipe I have seen. All neat and smart without exception. We had a couple of issues with the room, so informed Jess at checkout. I'm sure action will be taken with the bathroom step and the other points we raised.

    « Beautiful Hotel in a Castle »

Booked a very last minute overnight stay as a surprise, and boy was I surprised. The location of the castle is just perfect, surrounded by lovely views. Our room, well it simply took my breath away, the lovely receptionist who helped me with the booking had organised a suite for our stay and it was perfect. The attention to detail in the suite was brilliant, a lovely comfortable bed, coffee machine, kettle, biscuits, various hot drinks. There was even an extra heater in the room incase it was needed. The meal in the Farmers restaurant was lovely, staff were attentive and very helpful. Breakfast the following morning had a huge selection, infact I struggled to make a decision on what I wanted Pancakes, Waffles, Full English....decisions decisions lol. Overall I can't praise Walworth Castle and its staff highly enough, and can't wait to return and be surprised all over again.

    « Don't book through booking.com »

We decided to try a different location for a long weekend. After looking through a number of options online for a high grade stay we decided on this as its location and aspect ticked all the boxes. After booking online within minutes the full amount was taken and in the print it stated no refunds were given if we cancelled at any time even though we booked 2 months in advance. Upon arrival we weren't disappoint it is a fabulous setting. We checked in and shown the direction of our room and given our card key. The room upon entry was small and dark ( even on a sunny day). We then decided on a coffee in the restaurant. It took an age to finally get served the coffee in an empty venue. The night turned a bit wet and chilly and ao did the room , it was cold and damp. The bathroom window wasn't frosted glass and looked directly onto the car park.

« Beautiful outside, chaotic inside. »

We had lunch here while visiting the bird of prey centre in the grounds. It's a beautiful building and a bit of a maze if you go in the front door looking for the bar. It was ok though as plenty of staff to direct us. The food was lovely, just had home made soup and sandwiches but the problem was actually getting it. Although there was over half a dozen staff in and out of the bar it was chaotic with little organisation. One girl seated us and said someone would come and take our order but nobody came! There was a lot of people at the bar yet a lot of staff milling about did not set in and help. Luckily we wanted a leisurely day so sat back and were entertained by the disorganisation. We put it down to a wedding about to start although I overheard staff saying they had not expected it to be as busy. Nice food but don't expect fast service!

    « Castle Cutie »

We were invited to an anniversary party at Walworth Castle. it was at least 20 years since we had been there and they were not fond memories. Dingy, cold and unwelcoming. Just like a castle, in fact. However we were in for a pleasant surprise. It has obviously undergone a very nice face lift. Our room was the Hansard Suite. On the top floor with a turret! At first we thought there was no bed or bathroom but that was because the first room is just a very comfortable and well appointed lounge. when we found the bedroom - just down a short corridor there was the four poster bed in a round turret room - wow! The bathroom was just off and had all that you would expect and ticked all the boxes. The party itself was terrific. There was a broad mix of ages and the DJ got the balance just right from 60's and 70's oldies to up to the minute tunes. The buffet was very good with a broad selection of goodies and plenty of it - not like some places we have been to in the vicinity. The bar area was quite small but the two bar staff were very efficient and we never had to wait long for a drink. Breakfast next morning was all that you would expect from a good hotel. Various cereals and fruits to start, a choice of hot food to follow and well cooked. My wife is a stickler for how she likes her eggs and she was happy so job done!

« Lovely hotel in a castle set in beautiful grounds »

We arrived lunchtime and later had a wonderful afternoon tea Our room was very large with a sitting area flat screen TV coffee machine and kettle for making tea (biscuits included). The bed was a very comfortable four poster and the bathroom was huge. We visited the Birds of Prey centre which is in the grounds in the afternoon which was very interesting We attended a function in the evening where there was a very good DJ playing music from the 60s and 70s (our era) and the buffet was fantastic We had a full English breakfast which was great (lots of choice for breakfast) the following morning and went off for the day to Durham That evening we had a very good meal in the Farmers Bar - goodquality and very reasonably priced We would definitely recommend this hotel - the staff couldn't do enough for you and were very friendly and courteous. The only reason we've given 4 stars is that there is no lift or not one we could find so maybe not good for wheelchair users in the main hotel but I believe there are ground floor rooms in the annexe.

« Great hotel, attentive service, competitively priced, lovely setting »

I arranged for a group to meet and stay here over a long weekend and was very pleased with my choice. in particular, the young staff were always attentive and helpful, genuinely keen to help us throughout our time at Walworth: they went out of their way to be helpful (e.g. the receptionist kindly bought me a daily paper on her journey in from home early one morning). Each evening the members of my party seemed to find something afresh to try from the dinner menu and the meals were served promptly, despite the competing need to service a large wedding party. I'd heartily recommend Walworth for a group or for a couple looking for a quiet place to stay in the unexpectedly attractive Durham countryside.

Stayed there for one night this week. Very easy to find and plenty of parking. Staff were very friendly and the dinner in the bar was very tasty and reasonably priced. Didn't have breakfast so can't comment on that. Very comfortable and clean room. Overall, I'd say it's 4.5 rather than 5 but will stay again when nearby

    « Family wedding »

We stayed the weekend at Walworth Castle for a family wedding. Our room was in the main part of the castle, it was clean and very comfortable, the staff were friendly and went out their way to make our stay a wonderful experience. We ate in the restaurant on the Friday evening and had breakfast on the morning, the food was freshly cooked and well presented. The grounds of the hotel are peaceful and serene and we enjoyed a lovely walk round them. I would definitely recommend to stay here. The wedding was fabulous. Well done Walworth Castle not only did you make it an amazing weekend for the Bride and Groom but you did for us also, thank you.

« Wonderful stay for a special occasion »

We recently stayed at Walworth Castle with some guests for a special occasion. We were anxious that everything should go according to plan and that we would be given good service. We didn't need to worry about a thing. From the moment we made the booking we were given excellent service. Susan organised everything so that each of our guests were made to feel very welcome. Andy went out of his way to organise a special buffet for us even though we couldn't give him a specific time for this. Louise, Lydia and Liam did an excellent job of serving everyone and making sure we had everything we wanted. We spent the remainder of the evening in the lounge and Sam, the barman, catered for all our needs wonderfully as nothing was too much trouble for him. Some of the rooms were rather small but all were very clean and comfortable. The special touch of a greetings card from the hotel was very thoughtful and much appreciated. After a very nice breakfast we were checked out by Jess who was also very pleasant and efficient and sent us on our way with a lovely smile. I would definitely recommend this hotel for any occasion.

« Very nice hotel in beautiful countryside »

This hotel certainly has the wow factor as you turn into the drive and view the lovely building and surrounding countryside. Inside the furnishings are in keeping with the building itself with suits of Armour and period furniture. My room in the castle building was very comfortable but not spectacular, and I suspect nicer rooms are available with four-poster beds etc. Food was very food in the restaurant with much locally sourced produce, I would definitely recommend the Barnsley Chop. The free internet connection worked very well.

    « Romantic Walworth Castle »

We booked a standard room at the castle, on check in we found it was very small. We upgraded to a four poster room for £50 extra. Very nice room but not worth £200 which we were told it would normally be. Negative side there were 55 steps up to it , furnishing were OK nothing flash. Bed was very hard but otherwise OK. My husband asked for 2 glasses as we like a glass of wine while getting ready for dinner. Unfortunately it is Hotel policy not to allow guests to drink in their rooms, never had this problem before and we always buy wine with our meal. We were told we could only book dinner for 6pm or 8.15pm as the staff were having a fish & chip supper ? We went down for dinner at 8.15pm to find the restaurant had a number of empty seats. The best thing about this place was the food, we had Tempura prawns with a sweet chilli sauce, followed by rump lamb , really excellent meal. Beautiful surroundings , could try harder to make guests feel more comfortable.

« Fantastic surroundings, friendly staff but still a Best Western »

We stayed here overnight for my partners birthday and overall, we really enjoyed the stay. The countryside surrounding the hotel is fantastic and it's very quiet and peaceful at night; the only sounds are those of the owls and sheep. I had booked a four-poster room and we were not disappointed, the room was lovely with a huge bay window looking out to the countryside and an old-style four poster bed. The staff were all extremely friendly and helpful, there were just a couple of issues throughout the stay. First of all, we were in room 28 which is directly above the bar/breakfast room and unfortunately we could hear music until very late into the night. In fact at 2.20am, my partner had to contact reception to ask if the music could be turned down as it was so loud, you could sing along with the words of the songs playing. The guy on reception was very helpful and went to deal with the issue immediately but it meant we were very tired in the morning and had broken sleep for the first part of the night. Secondly, the breakfast was not the quality that I expected - I think we thought that because we were in the country and the hotel makes quite an effort to inform the guests of the use of local produce and organic dairy etc. that it would be something quite special. It was nice but not great, we both ordered the traditional breakfast which came with two rashers of bacon, one sausage, eggs, mushroom, hash brown and black pudding (if you want it - we didn't). There is also cereal and toast but at £12.50 each, it was on the higher end of what we have paid for hotel breakfasts in the past and I have had better. The last issue was that I was charged for the room when checking out but all the while, I had a feeling that I had already paid. Once in the car, I checked my email and paperwork to discover that I had in fact already paid. I went back in to deal with the issue and the girl on the desk was very apologetic and refunded my card - explaining that the booking company usually request that the hotel take payment but that this obviously wasn't the case in our situation. So all in all, a couple of issues but a really nice stay with nice staff. I guess the major selling point of this hotel is that you are staying in a castle - so if you can remember that at the end of the day, it is still just a Best Western rather than Buckingham Palace, you will have a great stay :-)

« Dropped in to Visit Birds of Prey Centre »

We stopped off here to visit the Birds of Prey Centre situated within the grounds of the castle. The entrance is very quaint and resembles a real castle gate. There is good parking and a nice play area for the children. The castle itself is beautiful. Inside it is characteristic and well laid out. The bar/restaurant was serving Sunday lunch carvary and was very popular. The food looked and smelled fantastic. There was also a wedding being held this day and all seemed to flow smoothly. The staff we dealt with were friendly, professional, helpful and pleasant. The Birds of Prey centre was reasonably priced. The kids were given activities to do on the way round. The staff were very knowledgeable and keen to talk about the birds and answer questions. There was a lovely, short walk through the wooded area nearby within easy walking distance. There were also flight displays twice in the afternoon which were very informative and stunning to watch. You were able to see the birds close up and even hold them. We returned later the same day for an evening meal, were given the Sunday Lunch special evening meal. The choice was good and the quantity was brilliant. The beef was amazing. Cost was reasonable too.

    « Fabulous, »

Just back from a family wedding. its a stunning location, a proper fairytale wedding destination. The biggest asset of this hotel is the staff. They are all pleasant, friendly and nothing was too much trouble. They all actually seemed to enjoy being there! I will certainly be returning.

« Fantastic Hotel, Fantastic Staff »

As we drove up the gravel path towards the Hotel, it looked so inviting !, Which is a strange thing to say about a Castle that was supposed to keep people out. It was a lovely day and as we looked around this imposing building spotted the Wedding Venue Pagoda and seating area. What a place to get married. No wonder its so popular. We were allocated The Luxurious Jennison Suite on the first floor with a Four poster bed which was set in a circular room in one of the towers with a large spacious and scenic lounge area giving spectacular views over the countryside.Large flat screen TV and Jacuzzi. The meals were enjoyable and served quickly by pleasant waiting staff Thanks Guys. All the Staff were so Helpful and couldn't do enough for you and really made our stay here a wonderful experience so thanks a lot to you all. This is our fourth stay in an actual Castle but this one tops the lot. Highly Recommended.

    « Amazing staff »

Lovely hotel. The staff couldn't be more friendly or attentive. Food on the evening menu was amazing. Hotel is in need of freshinging up but we had a lovely stay. Very large room with beautiful views.

« Excellent One Night Stay »

We stayed at this hotel for one night on the way to Gateshead. There has been much refurbishment since we last stayed at the hotel a number of years ago but the character has been retained. We had booked a standard room in the castle but were upgraded for free to a superior room with four poster bed and bath robes. The evening meal and breakfast were excellent and all the staff were efficient and friendly throughout. There is also now a children's play area in the grounds and a 'birds of prey' centre. We would be happy to use this hotel again.

« Excellent hotel near Darlington »

Lovely hotel set in an old castle. Some West Wing rooms are a more standard room, but Castle rooms are full of character. Each castle room is different - but very comfy. Restaurant is good with locally sourced food. Bird of Prey centre close by. 5 mins to Darlington, 30 mins to Durham.

    « Full of character »

I looked forward to staying in Walworth Castle as it was a bit different from the usual hotels that I find myself visiting and I was pleasantly surprised. The staff are all incredibly friendly and helpful. The rooms have all been renovated to a really decent standard and the food is super. All of this perfectly complements the immaculate surroundings of this interesting hotel. It must be said that the room rates are very competitive as well. All in all, it has been a nice change from the norm and I look forward to visiting again soon!

    « Love it »

What an amazing place to stay, beautiful setting and very helpful staff. Food was very good too and reasonably priced. Stayed in a room with a four poster bed and felt like a king. Bird of prey centre is next door together with a walk up a path into the woods. Will definitely return

    « Nice setting but..... »

Having read the management description of rooms in the West Wing as being 'basic' expectations were lowered. Checking in to a cold room was not a good start and gathered heating is not on until 6:00pm. The supplied fan heater was not much use and noisy. No heating at all in the bathroom which is not acceptable. While the bathroom was clean the bedroom had an area that hadn't seen a duster for some time! We did raise this at check out and received an embarrassed apology. A simple housekeeping check of the room would have noted the issue. Did not eat at the hotel but was served undrinkable wine in the evening. To be fair it was replaced and ok but given the barman admitted to not knowing a good wine from a bad not surprised that something that should not have been served found its way into a glass. It was just about OK for one night and it felt that the staff were trying hard but sorry we wouldn't stay again. As we attended a wedding which the bride enjoyed, the review escapes a 'poor' rating.

    « Carvery »

I have just opened this account just to review the carvery. Very limited selection... for example no stuffing when 2 of your meats are chicken and pork? and about 6 trays of veg 2 of them being potatoes. So after choosing everything I found that the pork was dry and bland the gravy could of been boiled water and you wouldnt know the difference. The vegetables were also bland and verging on being depressing and if anything was "seasoned" it did not blow me away in the slightest. So there was a big theme in everything tasting so mundane. I didnt want to make a fuss and hoped that the desert could redeem the whole experience but the cheesecake I ordered had the worst consistency I have ever seen. The base was soggy and the mixture its self was gloopy. Worst dining experience I have ever had to endure. It seems to me with places like the Toby Carvery doing so well. The carvery at Walworth castle really needs to see what is happening around them and see how high they need to set the bar. Boring Boring Boring food.

    « Fantastic week stay »

This is the place to stay if you want to relax and watch the lambs and walk around the area. Very helpful and friendly staff. Wonderful restaurant (great breakfasts). Would recommend this for people who just want to chill out and rest.

« Wow! Amazing Hotel and relaxing stay »

We decided to book a short stay last minute and thought we would give the castle a try. I had recently undergone surgery and needed a break to recover. We couldn't have picked a better hotel! On arrival the grounds were stunning and the castle itself is beautiful. There is a large car park and the facilities for electric cars. After checking in and seeing the room in the west wing we decided to upgrade to a larger one. This was nothing to do with the room it's self, it was more than adequate and beautifully furnished, we just decided we wanted more space. Susan on reception couldn't help enough, she offered other rooms for us to see and was more than happy to accommodate. Once we changed rooms we decided to sit in the outside area and enjoy the lovely weather and breathtaking views. We were shocked when the manager Michael, who we hadn't really met, approached us with a different room key. He said he had a room for us that he thought we would prefer and said he was upgrading us to a suite. We did not expect this or the amazing room we were being moved to. I can honestly say this was one of the kindest gestures I have ever received. The new room was stunning and lived up to all expectations of being in a castle. The suite had a large living area, a good sized bathroom and a large bedroom with a four poster bed. The features and furnishings included everything we needed and the room was warm, cosy and decorated in a way that really enhanced the characteristics of the beautiful building. It was perfect for a relaxing stay and more than we could have imagined. It is refreshing to see that although we were only customers for one night they were willing to make our stay the best possible experience. I had only briefly mentioned surgery and was overwhelmed that they were now upgrading me to help aid my recovery and for me to feel more comfortable. It really showed that the staff care for the guests and truly went above and beyond to meet our needs. Following a lovely meal in the restaurant we had the best night sleep in the quiet and peaceful surroundings. It is good to see that all staff take pride in their work to ensure they give an exceptional service. And all staff certainly did that. I would like to personally thank Michael and Susan for what they did and making my trip so special. I definitely recommend this hotel to anyone thinking of staying. Our trip was for one night so I can't even begin to imagine the service you get if you stay longer. We had a look around and the grounds and the conference rooms were also exceptional. I believe it would be the perfect place for a wedding or any other special occasion. Again, a big thank you to all the staff and we will see you all soon because we will definitely be returning.

    « Great »

Didn't stay here but popped into Walworth Castle Hotel for a quick bite to eat for lunch before going to the Birds of Prey Centre. The hotel was only doing Sunday roasts but a member of staff (Daniel Scott) was very helpful & asked the kitchen staff if they were able to provide us with a round of sandwiches. We were really grateful when they did. We couldn't praise Daniel enough. He was really friendly & welcoming - nothing was a bother - & he even suggested some places to visit during our break in the Durham area. Would definitely recommend a visit, even if it's just for a meal.

Attended Walworth Castle Hotel as a wedding guest over a glorious April weekend. Staff were very friendly throughout the day. The venue itself was unique and definitely something to remember. Would certainly visit again.

    « Stayed for 2 nights March 2017 »

Felt hotel was same as before, but details disappointing. Breakfast served in Farmers lounge (bar) not dining room. They were having problems with sewage pump, something had been replaced, but was causing a back up !! The smell was revolting, from the door which lead from front desk right up and in to corridor up to rooms 16-17. Horrible !!

« Breathtaking property on the outside but rather ordinary inside »

Stayed March 2017, £69 standard room only The one thing I took away from this hotel was that the staff were particularly friendly. Someone called me proactively when it looked like I was going to be late to assure me the night porter would wait for me. That kind of thing is appreciated and shows they want to look after you. The building is quite stunning and certainly in a lovely setting but the inside has certainly seen its better days. It's atmospheric I suppose through the corridors and stairways but the room, while a decent size, was rather tired and unloved. Possibly due to the type of building, there is only single glazing which makes the room pretty cold and nasty condensation builds on the glass. Bathroom was basic, nothing to shout about. I didn't go for the breakfast as I only wanted cereal and didn't think 12 quid was fair for that. I guess I might stay here again as the price is fair but don't judge a book by its cover.

    « Overnight stay »

Booked Walworth castle as it was reasonably priced and close to a conference venue. We arrived early but were allowed to check in. Staff very friendly and helpful. Nothing too much trouble. We stayed in the west wing, the room was modern, clean and comfortable and although a few features could be improved on it wouldn't stop us booking again. A meal in the farmers restaurant was very nice and reasonably priced Breakfast also very nice. Lovely surroundings and plenty of parking. Even free electric plug in for electric cars which we took advantage of. Would recommend.

    « Wedding anniversary »

Food was excellent especially evening meals, very reasonably priced and tasty. We came Sunday and stayed till Tuesday and had Sunday carvery which was really nice. Evening meal on Monday, which was best one and breakfast both days was faultless. Very friendly staff and efficient service. Room was a four poster superior room in top of castle over looking fields and beautiful to look out over on a misty morning. Room was also spacious and warm.

    « Spectacular building »

Have just had a lovely four day stay at Walworth Castle. A beautiful building in spectacular rural surroundings. Welcoming and friendly staff gave great service. Excellent food and well stocked bar. The communal areas were warm and inviting. As a minor point, we stayed in the West Wing, the layout of the unheated bathroom could be improved before our next visit. A good place to stay, great value for money,we recommend it.

    « Our Daughter's Wedding »

As we had had a couple of weekend breaks at Walworth we were confident when our daughter and her fiance booked Walworth for their wedding that it would be good, however it exceeded our expectations. Everything ran smoothly, the rooms were beautiful (we were lucky enough to be upgraded to a suite which was amazing) the food was excellent and the staff were fantastic. I can honestly say it was the best wedding I've ever been to and as an added bonus the castle and grounds plus the surrounding countryside make a wonderful backdrop.

    « Weekend Break »

We stayed here for a weekend using the Secret Escapes dinner bed and breakfast offer. The Castle room we stayed in was very spacious and very well equipped. However, on a cold winter weekend, it was hard to get the room warm and it was rather dark, in fact it was almost impossible to read. Dinners and breakfasts in the Farmers Bar were very adequate but we found the service rather slow on Saturday evening and Sunday morning. The staff were pleasant and helpful throughout. The hotel is well located for visiting Barnard Castle, Bishop Auckland, Durham and Teesdale. Overall, the weekend was very good value using the special offer and the hotel is a remarkable building which lives up to the pictures online! We would return in the future.

« A real gem of a hotel in north east England »

My wife and have just returned home after a three night stay at Walworth Castle Hotel which we found most relaxing and and we have to say that it is certainly an excellent choice for those seeking somewhere different with an abundance of character thrown in. Having not stayed in this area before, it allowed us to explore around Darlington and the surrounding countryside which was idyllic with autumn colours all around. Certainly a good base to take in the attractions on offer in this north east corner of England. We arrived on Sunday and were early enough to partake of the excellent Sunday Carvery on offer in the bar area. Absolutely outstanding! The breakfasts and evening meals during our stay were also quite wonderful.....compliments to the chef. We were staying in the West Wing (annexe) and although the room was quite small, it was more than adequate for us with everything you could want in the way of facilities. Everyone of the staff were excellent and most attentive throughout our stay and made us really feel most welcome. There is a Birds of Prey Centre in the grounds which unfortunately had closed for the Winter a few days before our arrival, but we hope to visit it another day, when we return for another stay at this venue in Springtime. DEFINITELY RECOMMEND to travellers in this area. Robert and Anna

    « Our Wedding »

My husband and I chose this hotel for our wedding after we had been for an overnight stay to celebrate his birthday. We loved the location and the uniqueness of the function room. We are so glad that we did! The wedding package we chose catered for 75 day and 100 evening guests and was extremely good value for money. On the run up to the wedding we visited a number of times, making payments, having lunch, afternoon tea, wedding exhibitions and left after each visit more and more excited about our big day knowing that we were in such good hands. We booked last November and married in October and in the August the management changed and we were informed a new events organiser would be taking over. We were nervous at first but once we met Ailsa it was obvious we were in for a treat, she is someone you instantly warm to with her friendly, chatty, giggly approach but is also extremely organised and looked after every little detail, even helping to decorate the tables and tie the chair sashes. I stayed over with my bridesmaids the night before and had a meal with them and my parents in the hotel restaurant. the food was sublime and the service impeccable- just what we needed before the big day! The wedding day itself was a dream, Steve looked after us through the day and Andrew took over for the evening. Both were amazing, nothing was too much trouble and they were always on hand to communicate things across to us. My husband and I both work in hospitality and really can't stress enough how important that is and how great these guys are. The food was amazing and plentiful and the hot food was all served lovely and hot. One guest who had her 18month son with her said to me afterwards that when the starter was served (Cumberland sausage in Yorkshire pudding) she was asked if she wanted the baby bowl served at that time or with the main course. She said I thought this was the main course! Very happy camper. The hotel also have the option of a resident DJ and he was brilliant. We had been in touch before to tell him the kind of stuff we liked and he couldn't have done a better job keeping everyone on the dance floor. I could sing the praises of this hotel all day but I need to go and book it for my 30th next month! If you are looking for a wedding venue and have any doubts about this place just go and chat to the staff and your mind will be made up. Thanks again to all the staff at Walworth for making our day so special

    « Wedding Party »

Booked Walworth Castle for our daughter`s wedding last Saturday, what an inspired choice it turned out to be. We couldn`t` fault the building, the rooms, the service, the food and the attitude of all the staff, from the general manager to the waiters. We had a couple of guests who had special eating requirements these requirements were expertly dealt with, nothing seemed to be a problem. We had a buffet on the night and everybody commented on the quality, quantity and choice of food available. The main meal after the service was of exceptional quality also, the dessert was presented that well it was a shame to eat it!! One of the guests asked about the dungeons, 5 minutes later the staff took anybody who wanted a look down into the dungeons. They didn't need to do this, we all greatly appreciated the gesture. As a wedding package Walworth Castle is excellent value for money and we would not hesitate in recommending this venue for that purpose. Thank you to all at Walworth Castle for making a special day even more special. Just one small request, maybe some tea making facilities in the rooms.

    « Won't be rushing back !! »

Avoid room 31 on the top floor, what a disappointment, not enough room to swing a cat and expensive at over £100. We were shocked to say the least. Had a meal in the bar which was quick to be served but quite nice. Breakfast was okay. Really disappointed with the accommodation, rest of the hotel was acceptable.

« Thrilled to stay in a real castle »

We loved this place - quiet and a bit off the beaten path. It was fun to stroll around the grounds and walk through the castle. It has been very well updated to a hotel. The beds were quite comfortable and the room was clean. We had dinner in the dining room, which was excellent. The portions were large enough that we could not finish it all.

    « Much better 2nd time around - LOVELY »

Got a last minute deal double room with breakfast - got room 9 which is lovely and I'll ask for this again. Bathroom in separate room however couldnt get heated towel rail to work even when using switch outside bathroom but didnt spoil it. Large comfy bed, plenty of refreshments, loads of storage. Didnt eat evening meal here but wish we had but we did do a cream tea which was lovely. All staff so pleasant and helpful here which makes a bit difference. Breakfast lovely, attentive staff - wish we'd been told we had to make our own toast though, we waited a while and then noticed someone else doing it. Nevertheless this was our 2nd stay and won't be our last, really enjoyed it and couldnt fault it. There was a wedding on the next day and they were just setting up and it looked beautiful.

What a treat for us,we have never stayed in a real castle before and it was wonderful. The rooms was a little small but we put this down to the age of the building. The rooms was very clean and modern with free internet. The grounds was beautiful, lovely country side settings very relaxing. They have a picnic area around the back of the castle with a bar and a children's play ground as well. They have ample parking on site and its just a shore drive to Darlington. We would definitely stay here again.

    « Spotless rooms »

I stayed here for a wedding in October I found most of the staff to be very professional attentive and polite during the whole day i did find that the drinks prices were a little on the steep side which spoilt the merriment somewhat. The silver service staff at the main reception meal were a little lacklustre and sloppy, after spilling a starter on one elderly guest I thought it couldn't get any worse but I was wrong as my table was only offered 1 glass of wine and no water with the meal where other tables were getting a top up! There was bits of our meal missing also.however I was very impressed and cannot complain about the accommodation as it was very clean and warm the breakfast was very good and cooked to perfection, however the waiting staff seemed to take an age with some of the guests orders.

    « Beautiful just beautiful »

We came here to visit the Birds of Prey centre and we loved it. The kids (5 in total) where hungry so we went inside but the lunch eatery had finished but the staff sat us down and we was able to order, so i was very impressed as the kids where hungry :) thankyou so much for, thats what its all about, going that extra mile with customer service. We are coming on the 4th November to look around and have our wedding here for 2018. A beautiful building that oozes history. There was a wedding when we visited and I did see some guests and asked them about there experience and they spoke very highly as a venue. Cant wait. The staff are professional and work as a team. Teamwork divides the task and multiplies the success. Well done see you soon :) Nichola and Rob

    « Birthday Treat »

Very welcoming reception and personable staff throughout the hotel. Food in the Bar/Restaurant was of good quality and value. Staff were willing to adjust dish ingredients to suit individual taste/preference. Much merriment was had with the extreme height of the four poster bed - not ideal for the more mature in years, petite, person. However, it made the stay one to remember with great affection.

    « Good value »

First of all, I was very impressed by the price of the room, £97 for a double room is incredibly good value. It was a lovely room and the bathroom was lovely too, not much of a view, but we didn't mind. The whole venue was amazing, such a beautiful setting and hotel, needs a little bit of general touch up but it wasn't in obvious disrepair Some of the waiting staff could've cracked a smile throughout the night. Some poor lady got her starter spilt all over her at the start of the dinner after having fallen over to get into the dining hall area. But the staff were quick to attend to her after her fall. The food was meh, not sure if it was the chef's choice of meal, or the couple's but I wasn't a huge fan. The alcohol though!! I would suggest taking your own and slipping it into your bag. £4.50 for a pint of Carling was ridiculous, £7.50 for a double vodka and lemonade was also a huge rip off!! Definitely take your own alcohol to save yourself a fortune All in all, it was an alright stay, the room was good value and the staff were helpful

    « OK for price... »

I came to the castle for a wedding in october and the building, decoration, and presentation was subperb. The event ran smoothly and it was a lovely day to be had by all. The problem for me was i found some of the staff incredibly unprofessional. For the money that is paid, its not to hard to crack smile. Most of the staff, did not look happy to be there and its extremely disconcerting to have that around such a special day. An elderly lady had fallen over at the start of the meal and then a waiter had spilt a started on the poor ladys lap. I feel the service was OK, just maybe a bit more composure and smiles. The room price was great for what it was. No problems at all with the room. Very clean. However those bar prices need to come down. £7.50 for a double vodka (pushing smirnoff at a premium price.. ) is horrendous. Overall, it was a lovely day, spent with lovely people.

    « Birthday and anniversary stay 12th-14th October 2016 »

Stayed here for two nights for my partner's birthday and our anniversary. Have nothing but praise for the staff (Steve, Andy, Jack and Sam) Plus two very nice receptionists. The room was very nice, four poster bed, very comfortable, set in beautiful countryside in it's own grounds. We were made very welcome and felt a bit sad to leave after two nights. The staff couldn't do enough for us and the evening meal we had on the day of my partner's birthday was very nice. The staff even brought in a little birthday cake with one candle, which was very much appreciated! The only comment I would make, which is a suggestion rather than a complaint. Please can you put more than one vegetarian dish on the menu? We would have stayed in both nights for your evening meal. Thank you for everything.

Beautiful building with nice grounds. Visited around lunchtime to have a meal to celebrate a birthday. Very disappointed at the dining area which was not inviting at all with no nice warmth or smell of food. Prices on lunchtime menu well overpriced and drinks the same, left after drinks and headed to a better venue. Half all your prices and you may get more custom.

« Decent for the price. »

A one night stay to celebrate my big sisters 60th birthday. Have to say the staff were excellent in helping us set up the surprise, in fact the staff were first class at everything. What a beautiful building the decor is what you would expect with suits of armour, wood panelling etc. The room we had was at the lower end of the budget with a decor that was a bit dated and basic but the bed was comfy and I would say it was adequate, especially for the price we paid. My sister took the upgrade to the four poster room and was very pleased, so it's probably the best option. The bar meals we had were excellent quality, the breakfast the following morning was again first class. All eleven of us were served at the same time. Cannot praise highly enough the staff. The only criticism was the lack of draught beers and ciders but that's a minor issue. Would definitely recommend for a stopover but upgrade to the better room. If I was the management I would congratulate whoever selects and trains the staff.

« Great Stay for The Corporate Traveller »

I stayed here on business, a single lady traveller, what a comfortable place and a lovely group of staff, I had a lovely dinner in the Bar great menu and value for money, food that makes you feel at home! whilst it has the lovely features of a castle it also has that great "normal" feel of a hotel much better than staying at the very corporate hotels that I would normally stay in....highly recommend !

    « Disappointing »

Looks good on the net but given that a lot of weddings are held there it would help if this was on the website with with fact that the hotel becomes very noisy. Looks better than it is. Our room was a suite and the decor was in need of a makeover and furnishing cheap

    5
    « Great Sunday carvery »

The Sunday carvery here is very tasty, it is always hot. There is a decent selection if veg from which to choose. I have only had the beef but it was very nice and you always end up with a very generous portion. I would recommend this place for your Sunday lunch.

« Overpriced for the standard of room, food and service. »

This 'hotel' is not as it seems, it is more like a pub with rooms. The building could be beautiful but the lovely stone windows have been painted grey gloss and the rooms are not well equipped. We paid over £250.00 for two rooms, one of which was a four poster room with two, 4 socket extension leads attached to the walls to provide plugs! The bathroom was clean but had no power shower and the wash basin was cracked. It also had an old dirty BT socket, an absolute must in a en-suite! We arrived in the midst of a wedding reception and the music permeated every room including the Farmers Bar where we chose to eat. The menu was strange, I'm still not sure what a 'gourmet hotdog' is, what did arrive was very greasy. The staff were brilliant but when a customer asked for a brandy she was told they had run out, would she like a sherry or a pernod as that was all they had. The vodka, lemonade and lime that I chose was so sweet and syrupy I couldn't drink it. When we arrived for breakfast at just after 7.30 (it was advertised as opening at 7.30) there were no staff to be seen. We helped ourselves to cold juice which tasted more like watery cordial than fruit juice and some toast. No hot drinks to be seen and when my husband went looking for some staff he entered the kitchen to see numerous plates of ready plated breakfasts which we can only presume were waiting to be put in the microwave by the non existent staff. On checking out we were asked if everything was okay. When we told them we had no hot drinks or cooked breakfast they just asked if any other customers were there. We pointed out another two had left without eating! We were then offered breakfast but at this point it was to late but no refund was suggested. On a more positive note I have to say the bed was comfortable and ALL of the local staff were very polite and helpful. Sadly I would not recommend this hotel to anybody unless the room prices were halved. At best it should be a comparable price to a travel lodge where to be fair the food is probably better.

    « Wal Worth a visit »

Walworth Castle Hotel, is not exactly in anywhere but in open countryside a few miles from Newton Aycliffe and Darlington and the A1 and in my opinion well worth the drive, The hotel is a statement building, it says I am a castle. I have been coming here for eight years on and off, it was one of the first Best Westerns I stayed in, but I have never rated it on Trip Advisor. There is a large gravel car park at the front with further parking at the back, there is even an electric car charging point, bet you don't get one of those in many castles! On arrival booking in was simple and painless, as it should be, I was upgraded from a 'West Wing' Annex room to a castle room ? excellent?., this will obviously not influence my review. !! The room on the first floor was a neat double, with flat screen TV, an arm chair and large bay window, I had a small adjacent dressing room / office space which led on to a en-suit bathroom, all very clean and tidy and apparently looked after by Brenda. If you want to stay in a Hotel with pristine prints and in immaculate condition, this might not be for you, but what this place does deliver is CARICATURE, as well as a unique opportunity to get up close and personal, with a building that's older than America! There is a pleasant decked terrace at the back of the Hotel overlooking the Tees valley countryside, a lovely place to sit out when the weather permits. They also have a separate Bird of pray centre which is open during the day. There are two menus in the evening the Main traditional restaurant with a reasonably priced set menu, and the Farmers Bar which served me well. The Breakfast in the morning is cooked to order.

went to the carvery on Sunday didn't have to wait long to be served and the carvery had a great selection. gammon beef pork roast pots, new pots 4 veg Yorkshire pudding to dye for and 5/6 different sauces. the beef melted in your mouth. £9,50 and was lovely and filling, the staff were efficient and lovely the restaurant was clean and bright. definatly recommend and will be returning

« Not as good as it looked... »

Before I go any further I must say the food there is excellent, the best quality I've had in a long time and very generous proportions....and the Staff are very good too. However... The room we had was in the annexe, very small and a bit ragged around the edges. The bath panel was loose, the grouting around the bath and tiles looked like it had been done by a 9yr old. On the plus side, I had a good nights sleep on a very comfy bed.

« Very helpful staff who made our stay wonderful! »

One morning there was no fish on the breakfast menu, the staff made sure it was there for the next morning so definitely very helpful!! They was a lovely atmosphere throughout our stay! Looking forward to visiting again

    « Lovely stay »

My husband and I visited for 2 nights over a weekend. Our room was in the annexe and was very nice.Breakfast on both mornings was excellent with helpful staff. We had afternoon tea which was delicious with plenty of choice. Only slight niggles were the dust behind the bedside tables and on the lamps and the bathroom needed a bit of attention ( broken and mouldy blind and a 'clay clot ' when running a bath- old plumbing I'm sure!) Overall though a great stay where staff were friendly and helpful and service was fab!

« Leisure stay at Walworth Castle for Birthday/Anniversary Break »

Having stayed at this hotel whilst on business, I decided to take my Wife away for the weekend to celebrate both my birthday and our wedding anniversary. The building is so impressive and if it is a place with character that you are looking for, then this is most definitely it. Excellent service from all staff from check in to check out. The food served in Hansards Restaurant is top-notch as was the breakfast served in the Farmers Bar. Lovely location, beautiful grounds, highly recommended for both business stay or romantic getaway.

« The best day of our lives - wedding »

This is my second review of Walworth castle on trip advisor. In my previous review i mentioned that we had booked our wedding to be held at Walworth Castle and that day finally came around on September 3rd 2016. We had an absolutely amazing day and although the weather wasn't the best, the staff and location were second to none. This really is a beautiful location to hold such an important once in a lifetime event and throughout the entire weekend the staff were on hand to help us with any and all of our needs. We went for the deluxe package which catered for 75 daytime guests and 100 evening guests. Prices are reasonable and in line with what you would expect to pay for a good venue and the food was excellent. I didnt manage to eat all of my portion of the wedding breakfast (nerves probably) but i definitely made up for it with the pork and stuffing sandwiches and nibbles that we had for the evening party. Both me and my wife had an absolutely fantastic weekend and all of our guests did too. Lots of very good comments from all of the guests regarding location and food etc. The only issue i had was to do with one of my guests who had booked and paid the deposit for a room to stay overnight. He had to leave in an emergency and at the time i never through twice about it but i was told later in the evening that i would still have to pay the remaining £77 for his room even though he never checked in. I left it until the morning to ask the staff if we could possibly waiver this as we had just spent the thicker half of £10000 on the venue but there was no budging on it. I didn't want to argue and i understand that the room would have been occupied had my guest not booked it but why was i responsible for it when i didnt book it anyway. It was a bit annoying to say the least and almost put a bit of a dampener on the weekend (also the only reason i haven't put 5 star) . Anyhow.. apart from that rant...everything else was perfect. I would definitely recommend Walworth castle, whether its an overnight valentines getaway or a full blown wedding. Absolutely brilliant and thank you to the staff at Walworth Castle for helping us to have the most amazing day ever!!!

« Big cheerful hotel in castle building »

Out on lovely country and with spacious public rooms. Nice breakfast served by bustling young staff. The farmers bar has good 'pub food' but don't expect gourmet; it's more farmer's portions style. The garden is rather disappointing; mown grass and a pond by the wood surrounded by noxious or invasive weeds. Rooms are clean and the beds comfy but the rooms are small for somewhere so far out of town.

    « Amazing venue for a wedding »

The look of the place was amazing like a real castle the socialising areas where amazing. We paid £25 to book in early so we could get ready for the wedding when we got there the wedding party and guests that paid the fee where told the rooms where not ready yet we had to wait an extra half an hour which I wasn't happy with I pay the extra money to have access to the rooms. Once in the room opened the door nearly fell over the bed as it was near the door we stayed in room 5 in the castle extension maybes not worth the price of the room. It had al amenities shower wasn't powerful and very small not very well finished. Visited a friends room 39 was very old fashioned and looked old and tired needed revamping. Bar staff where not very helpful half the time they didn't have staff who could make certain drinks and they would go round the hotel searching for someone to do them. On the whole it was a great venue for a wedding was a good laugh staff where pleasant even when I needed my foot bandaged up after stepping on glass haha. Good night.

« £30 to pull a sofa bed out! Too expensive »

I stayed here for a wedding, the wedding breakfast was ok at best. For some reason the team were reluctant to top up wine glasses even though it had already been paid for. The room I stayed in was way to expensive for what it was and an additional charge of £30 to make up a sofa bed (which is already in the room) is a disgrace. The actual Castle is very nice though.

    « Wonderful stay »

What a lovely unique hotel. Friendly staff. Fabulous room especially the bathroom. Only problem was that the walls 'moved' whenever a door was closed. Guests seemed to slam doors! Lovely ice cream parlour just down the road to add to the attraction. Would definitely recommend this hotel.

    « modernity & history. »

We've used the castle for years & seen the developments over that time.it still has a good carvery, which has been going for years.it's got outside dining when the weather smiles on us.now there's a kid's play area which the grandchild love.the newest attraction is the Birds of prey centre set in the grounds.it's quite a pleasant location all in all.

    « Holiday cottage »

Just had a 3 day break at the holiday cottage within the castle grounds. We were 2 couples celebrating our 34th wedding anniversary and didn't want anywhere too rowdy. This was the perfect place to go. The cottage was beautiful and had a hot tub in the garden. The staff at the Castle were all very friendly and welcoming, from Tony in the farmers pub where the food was lovely to Louis in the castle restaurant who couldn't do enough for us while having our annivrsary meal. Even though there were 5 weddings over the weekend the staff although extremely busy still made us feel very welcome. Would definitely recommend this cottage and hotel.

    « Dream Castle »

I went on an office visit to Darlington and this is the hotel they booked for us. Where should I start, it's a small but beautiful castle/Hotel. Amazing food, try anything and it would be the best in town. The staff, manager, Barmen or the ppl are just amazing. It's a little away from town so we had to a taxi but that's the reason we got an amazing view. My room was huge and everything worked without any hassles. I fell in l be with the food and they have a lot of options for breakfast as well. I stayed there for 15 days and my this hotel was one of the highlights of the trip. This hotel is generally used for weddings as we had one going on every alternate week. They gave us a free dungeon your as well

« Daughters Wedding and over night stay. »

My Daughter had her wedding day on the 26th August 2016 at the castle. The wedding planner was brilliant and nothing was too much trouble. The whole wedding went to plan and the staff couldn't do enough which made the whole day even more special with their politeness and attention to detail . We were were upgraded into the bigger room for the night disco with no extra cost. The food and service could not be faulted. We stayed over in the hotel and all rooms were clean and comfortable they were quick to bring anything up to the room we needed. Thank you for making this such a wonderful day and in my daughters words "I do not want the day to end".

    « Wedding Celebrations »

Our son and his bride had their wedding reception and evening celebrations here and we had an overnight stay too. The food was perfectly cooked, presented nicely and served quickly whilst still hot. The room layout was exactly as planned and the staff were very pleasant and friendly. Our bedroom was nice and spacious with a walk-in shower, the bed was comfortable and the room was warm and comfortable. Breakfast was buffet cereal, fruit juice and also a cooked breakfast with toast made to order. Check-out was easy and pleasant. Would highly recommend this hotel and we will probably stay again in the future.

    « Castle without hassle »

We really enjoyed our stay here at the weekend. The staff gave us a really warm welcome and nothing was too much trouble, they even moved us to accommodate my need for s bath- and I got s fabulous bath and The room was lovely with an impressive four poster bed. We ate in Hansards restaurant on the evening. We had s five course meal for £23. It was great value for money. The food was excellent and again we couldn't fault the service. My only niggle with our stay was breakfast, which itself was delicious, but we had to ask for sugar, milk and bowls, there was also no jam or other spreads for toast. We got everything we asked for, so no real issues, but we shouldn't really have had to ask for standard bits like this. Would recommend hotel to anyone.

« Disrespectful at check in »

As a regular user of BW hotels, 100-150 nights per year this is the first time I have been treated disrespectfully at check in. The hotel has an award winning restaurant apparently but I did not use it as I chose to dine in the nearby town. Out of the way if you want a quiet time, 15 minutes by car to the nearest town. Lovely old Castle, the receptionist may remember it being built a few hundred years ago. The site has birds of prey and I believe there are demonstrations. A reasonable price for the room but extras would add up, expect to pay £150 + for a couple staying overnight and dining in the restaurant with a couple of drinks. The menu was quite good but it seems everything is an extra. £12.95 for breakfast (extra £5 to have it delivered to your room) £20 early check in fee, £20 late check out fee. WIFI is free but speed was not too good, I struggled to watch video. The bedroom was okay, reasonable size but not the cleanest I have seen. The bathroom (room 9) was weird. A massive bath/shower which took most of the floor area, which meant shuffling sideways to get past the oversize sink to use the lavatory. For business travelling men- no shaving mirror in the bathroom, unusual or stupid?

    « Birthday treat »

A birthday treat from my partner and what can I say the staff are amazing the King James suite is amazing never stayed anywhere like this before in a castle .. Champagne & chocolates were waiting when we arrived, the manager recommended we visit the birds of prey on the grounds this was an amazing experience being able to hold the owls (loved it) well worth a visit as the staff are lovely. The food in the farmers bar a delicious carvery for lunch & a table booked for evening meal ... Andrew the duty manager is lovely and they had rose petals and candles set out on the table for us .... The food is tasty and they even brought me a birthday cake out which made my day complete .... Many thanks to all the staff at the Best western they never disappointed when we stay at one of your hotels .... Ps. Sleeping in a 4 poster bed in the tower was a one off treat even with all the noises heard throughout the night maybe from the resident ghosts!! Would highly recommend this castle stay as it is like a dream, the receptionist is so kind nothing was too much for her to sort out last night and checking out this morning she is such an asset to this hotel thanks again

Went for Sunday lunch. The food was excellent and so was the service. My niece is a vegetarian and asked for vegetarian gravy. And this was no problem at all, and went and made it specially for her. We will definitely be back.

« Fantastic Meal and Excellent Service at Hansards Restaurant »

For our third wedding anniversary myself and my partner returned to the venue of our civil partnership for a celebratory meal, and it was an absolutely fantastic celebration all round. The menu in the restaurant had a really wide range of dishes, including meat, fish and vegetarian choices, and a fairly extensive wine list; all very reasonably priced. The whipped goat's cheese starter was particularly delicious (complimented perfectly by the basil jelly) and my partner has the lamb for the main course which was cooked to perfection. We we also treated to an amuse bouche of miniature steak pie as an extra addition to the menu, which was a pleasant surprise and tasted amazing. Stephen, the head chef, is doing an amazing job! The service we received was also top notch - upon finding out it was our anniversary, Louise could not go to enjoy effort for us. Eternally warm and welcoming, she offered to take photographs for us and arranged a further surprise on our dessert - a 'happy anniversary' message in toffee sauce! We would certainly recommend the restaurant at Walworth, and will most certainly be returning for our next anniversary - if not before!

    « I love converted castles »

I stayed at the Walworth Castle while working in Teeside, not one of my favourite places in the UK. But this hotel in the beautiful County Durham countryside made the whole experience so much better. I stayed in the West Wing so there was no noise, the bar food was perfect and a reasonable price and all the staff were really friendly. What more does a business traveller need.

« Carvery- food average service poor »

Visited just after 12 for sunday carvery. We were advised the table available wasnt popular with guests as situated near the serving area. It would have been fine if the service was quicker, but i ended eating most of my dinner surrounded by people stood queueing as the queue doubled and looped round. Not enjoyable eating with peoples backsides next to you. When we got our meal i was told there was just the scrag ends of pork left. As i wanted pork i took this and the remainder beef. Once sat down the chef offered another customer some fresh pork i noticed. No apple sauce appeared either until nearly finished. The turnip mash was barely edible , no cheese sauce on the cauliflower or to go with the cooked ham. Thankfully my beef was ok but i noticed a huge lump had been cut off by the chef that had dried out. Had to wait for more roast potatoes and yorkshire puddings while in the queue. Limited choice of veg. All in all not a good experience, i understand it maybe busy but the hotel should realise that and employ some more staff . Not what i expect from a Best Western hotel that in the past I tend to use. Did complain to duty manager that was serving behind the bar and she was apologetic, but that doesn't really cut it. Wont be going again at that price plenty of superior places to eat

    « Quaint but Tires »

Staff are very friendly and the setting is nice. We wanted to stay in a castle and the exterior didn't disappoint although a 'modern' addition was built alongside the castle most likely to increase capacity. Our room had a mix of old and new with the new portion being the bathroom but it needs serious updating. We understand that it's a castle but if there are new elements that detract from the old it should at least be udated. This included a very uncomfortable mattress which is the worst we've had in our 14 days on the road so far. We were also warned of a wedding that evening (Friday) which of course meant noise... they were good about locating our room somewhat away from the noise but it could still be heard. With this said, the staff were friendly and they quickly helped us with our TV issues. The location is remote which is a draw, but nearby Darlington doesn't have much to offer. It's a good place to stay while passing through I suppose... or if you're attending a wedding.

    « The cottage »

Just spent a week in the cottage in the grounds of Walworth Castle. Probably used to be the grounds keepers home or the stables. It has been refurbished to an excellent level, with 2 bedrooms, a master with a double bed and a smaller one, with 2 singles, (you can push them together). Good size kitchen/living area, with a big TV, DVD player and iPod player but this only has the fitting for the new IPhone 6 style. Good size bathroom with over bath shower. plenty of hot water. However the best feature is the hot tub, big enough to take 4 adults easy, multiple jets and underwater lights. Little things I know, but some time these are what make a holiday. It is dog friendly and there is a small wood at the back of the castle so we could let him off for a good run around. The cottage is far enough away from the castle, which holds weddings etc, so that you are not really disturbed by the comings and goings and the noise. As the cottage is self catering you can either bring your own food or there is a big tesco and sainsburys about 15 minutes drive away. The kitchen has all you need to prepare food, unless you have any stange dietary needs. Towels are provided for general use but, bring some for use when getting in and out of the hot tub. It is only 30 mins to Durham and about the same to Whitby by car. There is an Ice cream parlour about 5 mins up the road, but the road to it,is not lit and has no pavement and is very twisty. I would not advise walking to it, especially if you have kids. The only real downside is that to get to the hot tub you have to go through the smaller bedroom, or walk around the property. All in all a great place to spend a week.

I was unable to attend a wedding with my disabled daughter and after trying to cancel the room some 12 weeks before I was told abruptly that I would my £50 deposit the management weren't interested in my reason (disabled daughters). « Fantastic Anniversary Stay! »

A beautiful old building steeped in history. Tranquil setting, lovely room (castle double) amazing food and helpful, friendly staff. We had a brilliant visit with personal touches such as a card in our room to wish us a happy anniversary. The food in the Hansard restaurant was absolutely delicious and the young waiters were professional, courteous and friendly.

Attended a wedding here, never been before totally happy with all aspects of the day, the food was absolutely delightful and the surroundings of the hotel are gorgeous. . The evening bar staff sam and jack were excellent at what they did and very very professional keep up the good work lads. A note to the manager ----- you have two excellent employees there that went above and beyond their duties. All the other staff were very good and friendly as well though

    « Lovely setting. »

Mid week buisiness trip and this hotel exceeded expectation, lovely setting, grand old castle , few creaky boards but I guess that is ok for something built in the 13th century. Food was excellent. This is a popular wedding venue, and its easy to see why. Plenty of parking and not far off the main routes to Newcastle and Teeside.

« Visited Birds of Prey »

Birds of prey excellent. Walworth Castle very poor. We had two people in wheelchairs and there is no disabled toilet. One gentleman had to use the ladies toilet as it had the most room. Won't return they have alot to improve on. Not disabled friendly at all.

    « Very Disappointed »

Having stayed here before it became a 'Best' Western, I was hugely disappointed to find a hotel with such potential had not improved since coming under the BW banner. A massive cobweb above the shower in my room, the shower head so clogged up less than 50% of the jets let out water, even though there was a warning 'not to use the shower on max to prevent overflow'. Chance would be a fine thing! The biggest failure for me was when a visitor to the hotel for the wedding fayre, fell and split his head open, not the hotels fault as it was purely the age of the guest and his general state of health. When ALL of the hotel staff (and there were a lot around due to the wedding fayre), failed to give assistance, it was left to myself and to other guests to provide first aid to the gentleman. When the staff were prompted to finally get their first aid kit, it was inadequately stocked, and improvisation was required. I have great doubt any of the staff are at least First Aid at Work trained. The only reason I give this hotel 2 stars is that I could not fault the food in The Farmers Bar, and it is set in beautiful surroundings. Reception staff excellent, bar staff ok. Due to the wedding fayre, there were definitely 2 higher level members of staff present who were more interested in selling wedding packages than caring for an elderly gentleman. I won't be stopping here again in a hurry.

    « A Great way to celebrate a birthday »

What a lovely place to stay. We stayed for 2 nights in the castle and it was great. The staff made our stay first rate from the moment we arrived everyone was extremely helpful . We got a call to our room shortly after arrival to check everything was ok . There was a wedding on but this didn't impact on our stay. We ate in the restaurant on the first night and because of the wedding we had the dinning room to ourselves. The lady that looked after us was brilliant as was the food. Breakfast on both days was lovely. We ate in the Farmers bar on the second night just having a huge burger and panini which was great - other people who were eating were just impressed as us with the food. Our room was lovely overlooking the drive (room 18) - great for watching all the wedding guests arriving. Thank you to everyone who made our stay so memorable.

    « Very disappointing lunch »

Went for lunch here with 4 other on Saturday 30th July. Although we ordered separately at the bar it was obvious we were together particularly as we were all talking to one another, ordered consecutively and all then sat together. First 2 meals came - a good 10 mins later no sign of any other food so one of us went to the bar to enquire and then 2 more meals arrived. Another 10 mins later no sign of the afternoon tea ordered by the last 2 members of our group but then the plated cakes came - with sandwiches on a separate plate??? That's a new one on me. But no sign of the tea. I went to enquire at the bar although as a wedding party had just arrived in another room for the reception I half expected not to find anyone there. However I found 2 women and a young man all stood behind the bar just chatting. When I asked where the tea was no apology just a surly "I'll go and check". The afternoon tea was not particularly cheap and the cakes were shop bought so goodness knows why it took so long. I have read previous comments about bar staff looking miserable and like they don't want to be there. I've also read management responses that this was being dealt with. No evidence of any improvement though. From outside it looks a fabulous place and staff at the door waiting for the wedding party were excellent. As we walked in to the dining room I suggested to my husband that we might return and spend a weekend in the hotel. After this experience and reading some of the reviews not sure I'm so keen anymore.

    « A lovely day for a wedding »

We have visited this hotel over the years and always found it to be acceptable. On Friday last we had the opportunity to revisit due to our Grandsons wedding event. There has been a number of changes for the better but the overall character of the old place is still the same. A lovely venue and the country setting overlooking the lower reaches of the Tees valley are stunning. The weather was very kind to us so we spent a lot of the free time in the outside area and Bar. The rooms in the actual castle area although probably more expensive are the better ones bot if you are only staying the night the rooms in the 1950s extension although in some cases small are satisfactory. The facilities and food were acceptable although the range of fraught beers etc was somewhat limited - very much a personal choice. It grieves me to say this but some members of front of house staff mainly the bar area need training in customer service and to smile now and again - if they are not happy in the job and don't like dealing with the public they should find work elsewhere - they are not doing any favours for their colleagues or the hotel.Overall a very pleasant stay.

My brother and his new wife had their wedding reception at the castle last week and the day could not have been more perfect. The castle is such a beautiful Venue and the staff couldn't have been any more helpful, from the amazingly friendly, welcoming and helpful reception staff, the bar staff and Surinder and Steve who helped to make sure the day went perfectly. Exceptional staff and beautiful hotel. Thank you for everything ??????

« Disappointing and poor value for money »

We had a virtually identical experience to Stephen L. Room 2 on the ground floor of the annexe was clean but had barely enough space to open the door before touching the bed. The room was small, cramped, musty, poorly laid out and with an equally disappointing ensuite, where the shower rail was hanging precariously. A multiplug socket was fixed to the wall but was positioned so close to the furniture below, that it was impossible to use any electrical appliance such as the kettle, without first dragging the furniture away from the wall. Like the previous reviewer we paid £95.00 for a bad night's sleep, in an uncomfortable bed and won't be repeating the experience and likewise agree that Premier Inn manage to provide far superior accommodation at a fraction of the cost. This room should more accurately be advertised as a 'single' and not a double. It's a shame because the castle exterior and grounds look great, a good location for a wedding but a member of the management team needs to spend a night in Room 2 and see, how with some planning and a little effort they might improve things.

    « Totally Gobsmacked »

On arrival at Walworth Castle, myself & husband were toatlly taken back with the awesome sight we got when we drove up the drive. The hotel, the grounds, the childrens play area were totally immaculate. The room that i booked was a ''Superior Four poster with Spa bath''. on opening the door we did not expect what we were presented with. The only way i can describe it is '' A 1 bedroomed luxury falt without the cooking facility''. We were supplied with fluffy white bathrobes as well as fluffy soft towels in the bathroom. This room was big enough in itself to hold a party, and the spa bath was awesome for blasting those stresses away. The lounge area was fully equipped with large flat screen tv and coffee and tea making facilities ( although in a hotel there is never enough milk & sugar supplied ). In the bedroom there was plenty of pillows, the bed was comfortable although a little hard for my liking but i still had a good nights sleep. There was only a couple of things that let down the room itself. These were no tv in the bedroom, im sure that im not the only one that likes to turn on the tv on a sunday morning, make myself a coffee and climb back into bed and watch a bit tv. But we couldnt do this. There was also a few light bulbs that needed replaced and a few cobwebs that needed sweeping but considering how high the ceilings were it was understandable, but really not noticible. I think im just abit ocd really. All in all an excellent hotel, with excellent staff, excellent rooms and i cant wait to try the Four poster room on the 2nd floor at my next visit.

« Stunning wedding in a stunning surrounding. »

After reading various reviews good and bad I went to this castle for my nephews wedding this wedding. Yes we got one of the smallest rooms, room 6...which I had read about, yes it had resident spider.....not anymore! But it was clean, lovely carpet. Tv, coat hanger stand which as most guests would only be staying one or two nights was prefectly adequate for our two night stay. My twins had a twin room number 3which was a lot bigger and had little corridor where I ironed all our clothes for wedding. Bed was lovely. We slept really well. Tea coffee making facilities were lovely. The wedding itself was just perfect. Castle all to ourselves. Staff couldn't do enough for us. The food from Friday night till Sunday night was truly wonderful indeed. Prices for drinks about average. Lovely play area for the children and we loved the birds of prey flying around just after the service. The bridal suites and other suites in the castle our party stayed in were just fantastic. The castle very kindly provided flip flops for aching feet from wearing high heels and they were most welcome! So...I would highly recommend this castle for a wedding, meals or a night away. Yes we got a small room but it was lovely. Thanks to Walworth Castle and its staff for a fantastic weekend!

    « Disappointingly average »

We stayed at Walworth Castle for one night costing just under £100 and I'm finding it very difficult to understand how there is justification for the price?!? A premier inn at less than half the cost is a much better option. Room was ok, quite small and very basic which is ok but for the price if have expected it not to smell damp! Pretty uncomfortable bed meant not much sleep and friends of ours who had complained about their room to the 'Manager' were told there was nothing he could do and wasn't even prepared to look at their room to see what their complaint actually was. Not sure what was happening at the bar but seemed that staff could only serve one drink before disappearing to another bar as they had ran out of glasses, drinks, ice etc, understandable this can happen but after almost ever person being served you'd have thought they would gave just stocked both bars with what was needed? All in all disappointing stay and won't bother again which is a shame as with a little thought, work and customer service training it would actually be a nice place, two stars would be harsh but three probably too generous.

    « Wedding stay »

My initial impression of the venue was "wow" as it is in a real castle. Unfortunately on the day of the wedding the reception and bar staff gave the impression that they didn't really want to be there! One young barman in the reception bar really couldn't be bothered. When asked to fill up a pint, which he had served three quarters full he reluctantly managed to squirt a tiny bit more into the glass. No apology, interaction or conversation. Wrong job young man. The gentleman who the drink was for went to a different bar to have it topped up. There was a complete lack of enthusiasm from the staff, with the exception of Rachel one of the bar staff. She was very helpful. Thankfully we enjoyed the wedding and the weather was good so we could spend time outside. Food provided for both the wedding and at breakfast was very good and our room with its four poster bed was lovely. Would I stay here again...? Not if the same staff are working there.

« clean, comfortable, but expensive »

Stayed here for two nights while attending a wedding. The staff were helpful, room was clean and comfortable, food was very good , breakfast very good, and all in all a good hotel but with the usual Best Western staff shortages, which meant staff were overworked by way of not being enough of them. I think it is also overpriced compared to other hotels I have stayed in. £5.50 for a cheese sandwich is too much!

    « Average »

Looks pretty impressive from the outside and just like your average best western on the inside, lobby bar and restaurant areas nice enough, friendly staff, no bath in ensuite and room dated, had to leave a portable fan heater on all night to keep warm, woken up very early by what we assumed was the extraction system in the kitchens. Wouldn't rush back here just average ....

Had my daughters wedding here on Saturday, what a fantastic day, food was amazing, rooms were spot on, only thing that lets the place down is the bar staff, none of them seem to know what there doing and every time we went to the bar the staff had to go somewhere else to get our drinks, absolutely atrocious, also the bar staff don't seem to listen to what your ordering, we got the wrong drinks on most occasions, and all the mistakes got tipped down the sink by the bar staff and ICE is that such a big problem, we got told the ice machine only works at certain times of the day REALLY. Come on guys get your staff trained properly and Walworth Castle will be an amazing place to go.

    « Amazing venue »

My daughter had her wedding here last week (Friday 15th July) Not only is Walworth castle a beautiful venue inside and out but the service is fantastic too. From the moment we arrived the day before the wedding we were really well looked after. The staff could not do enough to help particularly the young lady who was on the reception desk when we arrived (wish I'd got her name) who sorted a lot out for us including the fine detail of the music for my daughter coming down the aisle. Everyone commented on the delicious food and the quick efficient service of the staff. All courses were delivered fast and were piping hot. I cannot thank the staff enough for making our day truly spectacular and would recommend this venue to anyone considering it as a wedding venue. Massive thanks to everyone at Walworth castle.

« Ok for the price »

Book early to get a much cheaper price . If it includes breakfast take this option as its 12.95 each to have one there and there isn't anywhere else close by to get breakfast. Rooms in the west wing annex are much better upstairs for the same price. One room downstairs has steps up into a tiny bathroom ..we asked to be moved as I couldn't get up the steps and it was a tiny room. You can ask for fresh milk ( free) but by morning it's gone off as no fridge in room (maybe introducing putting it in a thermos would be a good idea ) Bear in mind weekends it's full of weddings or functions so not ideal for a relaxing break . The birds of prey were brilliant but you pay extra for this.

    « A little get away »

My husband booked us a double room in the main castle as a surprise. He is suffering from a bad back and is facing a 2nd surgery and we were supposed to be going out all day on the Friday but he couldn't and we had to cancel so he booked this room for us. We had a fab time. we were greeted very warmly and with a smile. Our room was not quite ready so we had a couple of drinks in the bar. All the staff we met were pleasant and happy to help. We had room 20 'Edwina's Room' and although small it had everything you could need. They bed was soooo comfortable and even my husband with his bad back managed to get a good nights sleep. Even though there was a wedding on and you could hear the music it did not bother us at all. We had breakfast included and it was fab. Abit more black pudding would of made it better for me lol. On the day we were leaving we went to the see the 'birds of prey' which was really informal and interesting. We also sat in the castle beer garden as it was such a lovely day. In all honesty I did not want to leave. Infact we have just booked up to stay for two nights on new years eve :-) we cant wait.

« 2 Night Stay for Wedding Accommodation Poor »

The communal areas of the Hotel are lovely, and the Reception staff are friendly and happy to help. The Restaurant staff seem a bit grumpy, but the food is tasty and good value for money. We were in room 11 in the West Wing, which is so tiny, there isn't any space for a wardrobe, you only get coat hangers on a rail? The bathroom was cramped, but was clean but you took your life into your hands having a shower as two temperatures red hot or burn the flesh from your body. It is definitely not worth the money they charge and would not recommend staying here to friends.

    « Still waiting..... »

Visited the hotel bar for lunch on a trip to the Bird of Prey Centre. We opted for the £5 sandwich with coffee deal and were expecting something quite special given that it took 40 minutes to prepare, surprising as it wasn't busy. The sandwich was OK even though the taste was somewhat marred by margarine. Can't comment on the coffee as it never materialised and as we wanted to see the flying display at the bird centre and we were now short on time we left. From the outside the castle and grounds are really very nice however it is let down inside. It has potential but general cleanliness is rather lacking, dirty tables and cobwebs made it feel quite grubby. My advice... Take a picnic.

« one night stay after wedding »

no complaints about the wedding. Just the room in the West Wing....its not its a tatty addition to the castle but not in it!! The room was so small, equally the bathroom which wasn't clean, mould on the grouting and round the bath. The curtain rail was rusty. The bed and pillows were unbelievably hard resulting in a very restless night. Generally the décor was very average being cheap and cheerful (no wardrobes just hangers off a rail) and for the money I would expect more. Breakfast....eventually guided to a table which was filthy. I had to ask for it to be cleaned as the waiting member of staff was completely oblivious to the crumbs and other signs indicating it wasn't clean After cereal no sign of taking our order for the breakfast. Again we had to ask. Then no side plates for toast, no knife, butter or jam or marmalade. All having to be requested. I definitely got to the point were I thought the waiting staff were going to throw things at us, surly, no communication and total lack of attention. Very poor experience.

    « Wonderful birthday treat »

Wow what can I say, I have always wanted to stay in a castle and got treated to Walworth for a big birthday celebration. We were made to feel welcome from the minute we stepped into the castle. My husband had booked a suite in one of the turrets and it was absolutely fantastic. Four poster bed, was so comfy and lots of room in the lounge area to relax. Nothing was too much trouble for the staff, they were all fantastic. We had dinner on the two nights we were there and it was absolutely superb. All meals well presented and lots of attention to detail. The grounds were well kept and it was a joy to walk through them. I will never forget my birthday treat and really hope to go back again. Please don't be afraid to book this castle it is first class. Lots of very happy memories have been taken away with us from this visit ????

« well worth giving it a miss »

Just finished a 2 night stay. We were given room 14 in the West Wing. The room was a reasonable size, looked recently decorated and adequately furnished apart from the wardrobe which was a few coat hangers attached to a frame on the wall - a bit like a coat stand - no doors or shelves. The walls were paper thin so we could hear the TV and even conversations from next door. We were woken up at 6am this morning by next door's alarm clock followed by their TV and hair dryer. So much for a Sunday lie-in. The room could have been cleaner - we found 2 resident spiders. The bathroom was very poor - no storage at all and shabby with mould on the ceiling around the window. There was a bath with a shower over it. Tried to have 2 showers during our stay but failed miserably. After a couple of minutes in the shower, the flow of water dried up to a trickle - literally one drop at a time. At least I was able to kneel down in the bath to try to rinse the soap off using a plastic cup (presumably supplied for this eventuality) and the bath tap. Totally unacceptable in any standard of hotel. It was reported to reception after the first occasion but was not remedied before the second! That being said, the food was very good (breakfast service incredibly slow!) and the staff excellent - very helpful and polite. It appears that the Hotel concentrates its resources on weddings and parties rather than its accommodation. Certainly the worst Best Western we have stayed in. Unlikely to return. Our friends, also in the West Wing were equally unimpressed.

« I will keep this short, if I can »

We booked this hotel Through Late Rooms as a last minute change in itinery. When we arrived the hotel was quiet ( this is very relevant) and were given room 9 in the west wing, don't be fooled it's not in the castle. The room was shabby and rather compact so we asked to be moved , this time it was room 15 whose wardrobe consisted of a number of hinged arms attached to the door frame of the bathroom door. It was slightly better but in the same west wing which resembled a converted barrack block. We paid the bill at reception as we arrived and were asked if we were staying for dinner at which point the receptionist added a further £ 45 as a Pre-authorisation . Having traveled around the UK for business and pleasure for nearly forty years I have never seen this done, Maybe it's Best Western's policy. However, when we read the menu we decided to eat in Darlington a few miles away. when we returned we thought a Circus had taken up residence in the drive in front of the Castle, dozens of cars ,a vintage single decker bus , an American Police car escorted by two motorcycle outriders, and at least forty others and their occupants who we mistakenly thought were a wedding party. We jostled our way to reception after having to park on the grass. I asked what the occasion was , the receptionist curtly corrected me saying it was a Prom and not, as I thought , a wedding. There were dozens of smartly dressed teenagers milling about in the car park and in the reception area and it seemed a big affair indeed. We had come for a quiet evening and doubtless the hotel caters for such functions but at no point we were told that the Prom was taking place when we arrived. When we arrived back and had to park on the grass some way from the entrance it was suggested we park at the rear of the west wing, we couldn't, as once again the vehicles from the function had over spilled to the rear. One small but significant point about the room was that directly outside the window was a washing line, complete with pegs , not very pretty and a first for us. After this we decided to try and cancel the room after being told we would personally have to contact Late Rooms , Late Rooms eventually managed to do this after two phone calls( they were told to ring back in ten minutes of the first). I then asked about the Pre-authorisation of the £110 , this was dealt with and cancelled. All in all a very unpleasant experience, perhaps it might have been courteous to have been told about the function, needless to say we would not make the mistake of returning.

    « Our Wedding Night »

We chose this Hotel for our Wedding Night, We stayed in the West Wing in Room 2, The room yes was a small double but it suited our needs for just the one night, it would have been hard to stay in it for a longer stay as it was on the small size and if you had to use the suitcase stand for your case it would have been rather difficult to get around it without keep moving it. But the room did have everything you would want in a hotel room, from Tea/Coffee making facilities, Hairdryer, etc. We had a meal in the Bar and it was lovely. Tony on duty that night on the Bar was brilliant nothing was too much trouble for him. He was a very sociable polite and pleasant guy. The Down side of this stay was We had been told when booking that the breakfast would be £10 for both of us as advertised on the webpage, but when we were checking in we asked for this to be confirmed and Gemma on reception advised us that had been booked at £10 each to be deducted from our debit card and she would get back to update us, but his was not done by her. In the morning we declined the breakfast, as we were told the total price was still to be £20. The night we stayed 24/6 there was a Prom Night on from a local School, we heard no noise from this. But We had just not long retired to bed when the fire alarm went off just the once, requesting that we leave the room immediately as you would expect to do in a Fire Alarm Call. But with it only going off the once we contacted the reception to enquire if we had to evacuate, and was told by a female member of staff that "oh the DJ set his Smoke Machine off which activated the fire alarm". There was no apology given or even an announcement made to inform guests that this was a false alarm.

« Fun place to stay. »

My wife and I have always wanted to stay in a British castle so The Walworth fitted the bill. A little hard to find (even my GPS was confused!) we eventually drove through the grand gates and onto the large property, wow a castle! And an old one at that (11th century), our room was big and comfortable, perhaps not luxurious but clean and fine for an overnight. The staff were friendly and helpful, there are a few bars and a very nice restaurant in the hotel as well as a "birds of prey" display and show at the rear of the property - highly recommended, very entertaining! Also there's a nice nature walk beside the bird sanctuary. All in all a great way to spend a night or two in beautiful rural County Durham!

« Great castle mixed feelings »

This weekend myself and my family attended my Uncles wedding, we stayed on Friday and sat night, myself and my 2 kids stayed in room 33 right at the top of stairs the room was amazing, the only downside was the bathroom light automatically turned on the fan and it was extremely noisy and the sink is slow to drain, shower was fine and warm. You do hear noise from the adjoining rooms bathroom fan and when people let go of the heavy fire doors the bang travels up the stairs. The wifi is slow and no good if you need to do work but ok for general browsing and the wedding food was delicious. I enjoyed my stay. My mixed emotions were about the poor disabled access, one of our party is limited in movement using a wheelchair, which the description says there is wheelchair access, you can access the hotel with a wheelchair however it is not easy to manoeuvre around the corridor to get round to the west wing ( only accessible bedrooms) is thin and has Sharpe corners. After the first night the person in question was considerably distressed as the toilets are all low and she was unable to use the toilet and struggle to use the shower as it had a step up into it. We checked out all the toilets on the ground floor and all of them except one which was slightly higher were low to the ground with only one handle bar. I would suggest that the hotel invest in 1 or 2 portable toilet raisers with frames as understandably its a castle they are limited but this simple thing would allow people to at least make the stay more comfortable and enjoyable, especially when attending something as special as a wedding. So overall from my point of view it was excellent and great for the kids 5/7 and hope they look into the disabled access. Would return for a visit

« Superb historic castle, set in beautiful grounds. Let down by poor evening food »

The castle is superb if you love historic unique places to stay. Many original features set in well maintained grounds. I stayed in the West Wing where the rooms are modern and well equipped, a little small compared to the grand spaces in the rest of the building. The windows are only single glazed but very quiet due to the rural location. They will bring fresh milk to the room if you ask, which was a nice touch. The breakfast was very good, both in quality and quantity. Nice to see Black puddings being served. For the evening meal you have to eat in or drive elsewhere due to location. I was not impressed with the evening meal. First course soup which was served with a roll. Mine was still frozen solid, so for only the second time in my life I send it back to the kitchen. The main I ordered the burger, at £13 it should be superb, but wasn't. The burger was dry and the chips it came with were soggy, edible but for hand cooked chips they were well short of the mark, oven chips would be a great improvement. Not sure what was going on in the kitchen that night but there were compaints from multiple tables, yet the food in the morning was good.

    « What a find »

Anyone visiting this area must choose this hotel. Staff all very friendly . Special thanks to Brenda from room service. Food menu in the bar Is good food but for those staying more than a few days might be limited. I stayed mid week and had the best nights sleep, it's so tranquil. Thank you .

« The view was nice but thats about it »

The reception, entrance to the castle, food and staff are all good things, but that's about it. The room is too small, but I guess ok size for the price but what is not ok is the tired and dusty furniture. The bathroom light directly over the shower starts to flicker shortly after I started the shower then stopped flickering shortly after I stopped showering which indicates a not water proof electrical connections, this can be very hazardous. The room was very hot and without air-conditioning you are left with a very noisy miniature fan. So you will either be awake all night because of the noise or the hot room, either way not good sleep quality. It's not acceptable that in the year 2016 the hotel wifi speed is 0.1 mb/sec, it simply mean that the hotel is not business clients friendly. Despite the hotel staff attempts to reset the routers, speed didn't accede 0.3 mb/sec which is too slow for me to do my work. I could have used my own wif dongle if it wasn't for the mobile signal blackout indoors, eventually I had to dangle my dongle outside my window to get a decent internet signal to connect my laptop.

    « A hidden gem. »

This will be our second single night stay at this truly delightful hotel. The location not far from the A1 is a convenient stop-over on our journey from Essex to Scotland. This is no 'chain motel', the staff are partcularly friendly and helpful and our rooom with a four poster bed and bay window - stunning. On both occasions the evening meal was exceptionally good. This time chosen from the signature menu. The chef catered for my food intolerance and produced a gorgeous delicious dinner. We feel we have found a real gem. We will return!

    « Decent BW »

1 night business trip; stayed in room 2 which was ok and decent value for money. There used to be an issue with water pressure at the 'new part' of the hotel but I had no problem on this stay. There was an electrical breaker box in the corridor outside the room making a constant hum all night which did make my stay a 4 star review- tip: stay in the old part of the hotel where the rooms are bigger too. Excellent breakfast as always and great staff.

My husband and I traveled with our college age son and elderly mother and aunt. We were just passing through, but were determined to spend a night in an authentic castle. Walworth did not disappoint! We stayed in the castle proper. The food was fabulous and generous. The ambiance was magical. Our hosts could not have been more accommodating. Plenty of convenient parking and a quiet country atmosphere. Comfortable updated bathrooms. Lots of nooks and crannies to explore. Wish we had more than one night!

« Birthday visit to Walworth castle »

We arrived on Sunday afternoon as a treat for my wife's birthday and were both blown away by how beautiful this place is !! We were met by the loveliest lady on reception who quickly checked us in and made us aware of the different bars and the restaurant we were booked in to for dinner. We stayed in the King James suit which is huge, it was lovely and clean plenty of towels, his and hers bath robes, pillow menu, Jacuzzi bath, and a fabulous four poster bed. Plus my wife got a birthday card from the staff which I thought was a nice little touch. 10/10 Things however in my opinion are not so great with the staff serving in the bars! it was lunch time and it was very busy with people having the carvary. However we ordered two G&T's when my wife asked for hers to be changed as the glass was dirty it was swiftly tipped into a half pint beer glass, not wanting to make an issue, but at £11 for two drinks I had to bite my tongue, we swapped glasses and went to the garden to enjoy our drinks where we were met by lots off tables with dirty plates and glasses on them. when we got a table I sat and watched for a good 30 mins the staff bringing out food orders and walking past tables with dirty plates, surly its common sense to clear a table rather than returning to the kitchen empty handed. This said we still had a great afternoon in the garden. Dinner was very good and beautifully presented in a rather grand dining room with a stunning view. Nothing was to much trouble. We had breakfast in our room which I wasn't blown away bye if I'm honest, comparing it to the standard of the meal we had the previous evening but I have had worse. checking out was swift and made all the better by another lovely lady wishing my wife a happy birthday and what her plans are for the rest of her day. Again a lovely personal touch. All said and done a wonderful little break and will definitely be back soon. Hotel 10/10 Reception 10/10 Bar 5/10 Food 8/10

Went to Walworth castle for our 10th wedding anniversary. Stayed in the honeymoon suite, room 16. It was so clean and very nice. The mattress was a little too hard for me though. Afternoon tea was delicious and we really enjoyed it. The grounds were lovely went for a little walk around the grounds. Ate in the farmers bar in the evening and really enjoyed our food. Breakfast was lovely too. Really would love to go back as we really enjoyed our stay and the staff were very friendly and helpful.

Recently stated overnight after attending a wedding at the castle. Beautiful setting, we had a lovely room in the annex, however some relatives had rooms which could have done with updating. Everywhere was clean. Great breakfast which is actually served to you rather than a buffet. Mobile signal is poor, but free wifi is offered however I found this hitty missy too. Not sure if it is somewhere I would return too in a hurry.

Recently attended a wedding reception at the castle. Stayed in the annex wing. Huge room, very comfortable bed. Immaculately clean room and bathroom. Staff at the hotel could not do enough for the guests. Excellent service. Wedding meal was excellent. Breakfast the next morning also excellent. Looking to book again for a romantic breakaway. Free Parking in the grounds. Free WiFi. Mobile reception is poor inside castle. As a wedding guest we thoroughly enjoyed the reception and were very impressed with the hotel.

I stayed in the Castle in the Edwina room and it was fantastic. The dinner was divine, with splendid flavours. Best food I've had in England so far! The castle itself is in good condition and the grounds are lovely. It was an amazing experience and for anyone wanting to cross "spend a night in a castle" off their bucket list I highly recommend this castle. The staff were also very friendly and helpful. I would definitely stay again and will recommend this place to any friends who visit this area.

My husband and I stayed here on an impromptu visit. We stayed in the main castle building and we're upgraded free of charge to a superior room complete with four poster bed. Overall a lovely experience which I am intending to repeat very soon. G

« Best Western has done a great job transforming this historic castle into a functioning hotel. »

After having the most amazing experience visiting the Birds of Prey Falconry Centre my wife, my daughter and I walked over to Walworth Castle to see if we could have a little lunch and to explore the castle. We entered the castle and were seated in a dining room with the big round table and the big bay window. We did not stay at the castle because we lived just a short distance away in Barnard Castle; we were here just for lunch. We did notice, however, what a nice job Best Western has done transforming this historic castle into a functioning hotel while retaining all of its authenticity. After studying the menu we decided on a sandwich platter with some soup and chips and some English breakfast tea, of course. Afterwards we enjoyed a variety of pastries and cakes. The food was delicious and the staff was most accommodating. After our meal we had the greatest fun taking photographs in the big furniture and walking around the grounds. I recommend the Best Western Walworth Castle if you're here just for lunch and especially after visiting the Falconry Centre.

Full of promise, (a great location) but the bedrooms are tired. Décor needs improvement and cleaning could be better. Bedroom in the "modern wing" did not have a bath and the shower was compact. Ugly black four way power block pinned to the wall above desk. Limited room service menu, no light meals or sandwiches. Food service in the Farmer's Bar was friendly and swift. Breakfast excellent.

« An all too brief stay at Walworth Castle »

Lovely building in very peaceful location. The best night's sleep I think I've ever had away from home. Had a meal in the lounge bar rather than the restaurant and whilst the choice was more limited it was nicely done and excellent value. The staff came across as efficient and genuine and I was given a free upgrade, without asking, which no doubt helped the experience. With the benefit of hindsight I would have arranged to arrive earlier and leave later ! I'll definitely be back.

    « Walworth Castle »

The hotel is housed in an impressive building and took our breath away on approach. Having paid extra to stay in the main Castle building, we were slightly disappointed with the room. The overall condition was a little tired and could do with freshening up. Saying that I must say that the shortcomings found could easily be put right.

My partner got for her Birthday a B&B in Walworth Castle. It's a really cosy little thing surrounded by a lovely landscape. We had a room in the castle appartment with a nice double bed. The staff were very friendly & helpful. After our arrival we had a nice walk through the grounds & the forest. The whole ground in the forest was covered with wild garlic. Our room was well kept & the modern bits & the old architecture didn't bite each other. We felt comfy & well looked after in our time we stayed there. We have had never heard of this hotel, but when the weather is better (sunshine) we'll come back.

« I hovered between average and good and decided on average - breakfast swayed me »

If you enjoy your hotel breakfasts, then think twice about going here. I have been to Walworth before for meals so was expecting something of a different standard. But each review has to be based on your latest visit. I had to book this room at the last minute due to a family emergency and thought being a Gold Best Western rewards card holder that I may get a much needed upgrade due to a long drive and bereavement (not that they knew that) but why be a reward card holder if you don't get the perks without asking? The room was fine, IKEA furniture and old tapestries made for an eclectic blend. There were Silver Fish in the bathroom, which I suppose for an old building is par for the course but still creepy to see run around. Breakfast was not even funny in a Fawlty towers kind of way. We waited ages to be seated, an unmade table, the waiter forgetting the tea. No Juice filled up, jam and marmalade missing, etc. I could go on but you get the picture. Even the two other older couples were not happy that were there a the same time. I would rather have Mcdonalds breakfast to be honest. While the podium was unattended, a list of guests was open for all to see. What I saw from standing waiting there a long time was that I had paid a very much higher price than the other guests for a room. Won't be visiting there again.

« Stayed in the old castle, great experience, room small but it was special. »

Great place to stay in a real castle, staff very friendly, staff even carried my wife's suit case up the stairs. Country type location, but close to Darlington. If from Australai this is a must, best roast we have ever had in the farmer bar that night. Staff friendly and experience unbelievable. This is special place for any Occassion stay in castle rather than annex, it's the experience.

« Great historical interest, pleasant grounds, decent food, tired decor. »

Went to this hotel with my wife and her sister, descendants of the Hansards who built the castle in the 12th century. Interesting building that has been extended and modified over the centuries. Must be a nightmare to maintain. Staff were pleasant and helpful. Bit of a mix up over the rooms but that was readily solved to everyone's satisfaction. Welcome trays very basic - no cafetieres or special teas (decaff, Earl Grey camomile etc) and not really enough milk pots. Bathrooms modern and spacious. Rooms old fashioned but not without charm. Ate evening meal in the bar - very large portions of decent quality pub food served in pleasant surroundings. Breakfast was fine too - nothing special, but large portions. Cost might appear to be a bit on the high side, but not when one considers the historic location. Had a look at one of the rooms in the annexe and was not impressed - would avoid. Very nice grounds with children's play equipment, an outside bar area, terrace and seating. Woodland walk. Large pond. Falconry displays in the grounds (at extra cost). Ample car parking. All-in-all a solid three star establishment. Would we stay again? Probably not, but we wouldn't discourage anyone from giving the place a try.

« Super place to stay »

I stayed for one night - May 2016 - and although my room was small it was clean and had all i required (including quiet). The castle itself is wonderful and the grounds were lovely to walk in. food was basic but good (i ate in the bar), service was also good. friendly staff. I would love it if they allowed a few of their rooms to accommodate very well behaved dogs. Its a great location and easy to get to and from A1. would stay again.

    « Always Good »

My wife and I were married at Walworth Castle Hotel ,that was a wonderful day. And we have been back every year for our anniversary. The castle is a lovely place to stay, beautiful surrounding countryside , quiet and peaceful. The grounds are pleasant to have a stroll round after a lovely cream tea. The staff are always polite and helpful ,the rooms are always spotless and comfortable. I recommended a work colleague to stay there when he was in the area on business and he loved Walworth too. I hope my wife and I will be coming back on our anniversary for many years to come

« Amazing setting / fantastic staff for daughter's wedding »

Daughter and now inlaw son picked this venue for their wedding - fantastic. Stayed night before the wedding and the evening of the wedding. Food was superb. Many guests commented best wedding they'd been to. Mary on reception was so helpful day after when we ferried relatives to train station and collected dress & hire suits allowing us to use the bridal suit well past when the bride and groom should have vacated the suit. Amazing service .

    « Beautiful afternoon tea »

Me and my friends decided to visit this stunning castle for afternoon tea the staff where so friendly. Even though a wedding was going on elsewhere in the castle it was a relaxed environment and the food was beautiful. I would recommend this to everyone. I have visit previously while venue uniting for my own wedding and lovely lady who showed us around remembered me and was polite enough to ask how everything was going. The little things like that made my visit perfect. I'm yet to stay in the castle but plan to very shortly.

    « ANOTHER GREAT STAY! »

We arrived on Saturday at a very busy time as there was a wedding taking place and a lot of the wedding party were in the reception area. This made no difference to the lovely welcome we received from the receptionist. She had a lovely smile all the time and couldn't have been more helpful. She told us that we had been given a complimentary upgrade, which was really a pleasant surprise as we were there for my birthday. We began our stay with afternoon tea which is well recommended and worth every penny. We ate in the restaurant both nights and thoroughly enjoyed both meals. Service was a little tardy on the Sunday evening, there seemed to be a staff issue but it was only a minor hiccup. The room allocated to us was fantastic, it was in the main castle and you felt very much at home with a lovely lounge, large bathroom with Jacuzzi bath and great bedroom. I wish I could remember the receptionists name, such a lovely person, she even gave me a birthday card from all the staff at the castle. Thank you to all! Will definitely return.

« Lovely meal in charming room »

Called in here with my wife one evening for a meal in the Farmers Bar. It was a cold night but the real fire we sat beside helped to warm us up. We both had a starter and a main course. The menu had set themes for different days. We both had Fish and Chips as it was "Fish Friday". Other nights included steak night, which featured a free bottle of wine, and a curry night on Mondays. The fish was huge and cooked well with a nice crispy, not soggy, batter. Service was excellent and although there was a small mistake with the bill, this was soon rectified by our waiter, Sam, who was very welcoming and attentive throughout. The only downside was the fact that the restaurant was very quiet, indeed for a period we were the only guests. I guess this was to do with the weather as we were told that the bar had been a lot busier earlier in the evening. Definitely worth the visit and will certainly be returning.

    « Thank you »

The staff today were amazing.Went to the hotel today with some friends and my mum. Following a lovely meal in the Farmer's Bar mum tripped and fell. The staff really couldn't have been more helpful. They brought her back into the hotel, warmed her up, brought her some tea and cared for her until she felt well enough to go to get checked out at hospital. She is fine and was home straight away, but it is many thanks to the staff for keeping what could have been a very stressful experience under control and caring enough to do so. Many thanks.

« Stay in the Castle »

This is a really nice original hotel. The castle is real, but the majority of the rooms are in a modern wing, the nicer rooms are actually in the castle. They are larger and original. There is a choice of 2 places to eat, the restaurant, where the food is excellent and the bar, where it is similarly good. The choice is extensive. A good place to use as a base for exploring Teeside and Co. Durham.

    « Great Hotel »

Lovely Hotel, good food, good beer and good service at a great price. Have stayed here on many occasions and never been disappointed. Main Castle rooms are best for a real castle experience although the Wing rooms are comfortable and cheap!

    « Walworth Castle Hotel »

This is a beautiful hotel, the food was excellent; over the course of our stay we ate breakfast, afternoon tea and dinner. The staff are extremely helpful and polite; especially Andrew and Mary, and I would recommend others to stay here.

« Very poor food quality »

Stayed here on business and ate in the bar. Ordered a chicken and mushroom pie. The pastry was extremely undercooked and inedible. My complaint was acknowledged but no offer of a replacement dish, refund or discount on the bill. At breakfast the following morning, the juice glasses had bright red lipstick on the rim. I also mentioned this to the waiter who's response was an amused apology. Mistakes happen but I was disappointed with the response from the hotel. Overall, not a good experience at Walworth Castle.

« Lovely hotel & grounds - poor sound proofing! »

I stayed one night when in the local area for work during the week Pros - comfy bed - beautiful breakfast. Lovely room - excellent staff - grounds are great. Impressive to drive up to Cons - loose extension on the wall (room 5) - no light switch near the bed - the sound proofing was awful. I could hear the full conversation of the gentleman next door at 11pm.i could even hear him brush his teeth and in zip his case! Poor nights sleep unfortunately - bed very close to the door I think if I'd had a bettwe room I would have enjoyed my stay more but not a bad hotel at all

« Lovely Castle weekend stay »

We booked our castle stay as a last minute thing through super break. It was 2 nights in a standard room with breakfast and 3 course meal on the first evening. We made a mistake with our booking and super break sorted things out for us and thankfully the hotel was able to accommodate us if we upgraded. I'm glad we did as this meant the room was actually in the castle part. The room had a four poster bed with steps up to it, we were glad of them as we are not the tallest of people. The room and bathroom was dated in style but very clean and had everything we needed. It could get a bit on the cool side for me and was glad of the extra blanket and heater left in our wardrobe Tip: if you close the window curtains it keeps the heat in more. The 2nd night was much warmer. Our meal was served in a lovely room with an open fire and antiques. The meal it self was fine (the chef not cooking our steak medium but sauce the best we have had) the service was excellent and was looked after well. The bar area and lounge was more stylishly decorated as are all the down stairs areas and yet keeping with the castle feel. Breakfast was nice. Help yourself to fruit, yogurt and usual cereal. Not a huge choice but then I don't think it was a busy breakfast. You have a large choice of cooked items for breakfast on a menus which you needed to order. The choice from the traditional to the pancakes and if you just prefer a bacon butty you can just order that but I like a pastry and would have had to order them instead of just helping yourself at the buffet part. We did get the feeling that if you only had to ask and they would accommodate us - so the 2nd morning we asked for beans instead of black pudding and the girl was happy to swap. We did love the rural setting even laughing at how noisy the sheep were! It wasn't the best idea to google if the castle was haunted before I went to sleep lol. Overall this hotel has a lot of potential and a lovely setting for a wedding. My only suggestion to them is see if you could refurb some of the rooms with a bit more style and extras as I'm not sure it was worth the extra money (it's not unusual for us to upgrade) everything else was lovely.

    « Business Trip »

Recently stayed in the castle part of the Walworth Castle Hotel, and although I would describe the room as possibly needing a "uplift", the room was of a good size and nice & clean. The only down side was that I could not get any internet connection whatsoever, but I actually felt that this was a positive. My colleagues ate at lunchtime and enjoyed a very varied and reasonable three course lunch and all were very complimentary so much so that the all party of 14 had a evening meal in the bar area of the castle. I have to say that the bar staff were extremely helpful and went out of there way to ensure that we were well catered for. The food itself was again excellent with no complaints from anyone within our party. Breakfast itself was plentiful and catered for all of our needs. I certainly would have no hesitation in recommending to others.

« A quick pint before going to the Bird of Prey Centre on-site »

We simply popped into the castle for a drink and warm up before going to Walworth Bird of Prey Centre (amazing). Staff at the bar are nice and friendly though the beer was over £4 a pint. The carvery smelled to good and it was very good value for money. Set in lovely scenery, it is a lovely place to hold a special venue I would imagine.

    « Good for weddings »

I stayed overnight for a family wedding in September 2015. The drinks weren't cheap, but they were about normal for a wedding. The standard rooms were ok, if nothing flash, although they were reasonably priced so I can't complain. The breakfast the next morning was very tasty!

    « The Farmers Bar »

Went to the Farmers Bar for the steak night, and it was fabulous! Couldn't fault the meal and service. Really enjoyed our evening there. Would recommend it to everybody, the food was fantastic and a free bottle of wine with the meal. Worth a trip.

    « Castle stay »

Beautiful location, very remote but fabulous standard. Traditionally furnished hotel with two dining areas, two bars and ample accommodation of a high standard. The views of the countryside were stunning. we ate dinner in the bar and it was probably the only thing I found to be a bit average, however the service more than made up for that, Tony was a very pleasant, helpful man. Had a really good night sleep. I was very disappointed with the breakfast. I had the continental and the croissants were hard like they had been microwaved (and tasted it), and the cheese was dried out. However the ham's were nice and so was the coffee. Having seen the breakfasts I would go for the Greek/healthy one. It looked lurvely. I would defo stay here again, and with the experience I would know to eat in the main restaurant in the evening and to choose a different breakfast.

    « Amazing find! »

Booked this hotel as a last minute need - I use quite a few Best Western hotels and found this one at a great deal price. It is an absolutely lovely hotel, steeped in history, set in a very rural location. The grandeur of the entrance reception hits you the minute you walk in the door. The hotel is beautifully decorated with a lovely bar area, a gorgeous and cozy lounge/sitting area with beautiful fireplace. It was nice to relax with a drink and a book! I booked dinner at the restaurant which was excellent value for money at £21.95 for 3 course meal - the food was very good quality and well presented. Even the drinks were much cheaper than expected. There is a small but adequate starter buffet at breakfast with a nice menu choice of cooked options to choose from. I had a basic small double but it was a nice room - there are some amazing quality rooms to be booked though if you have the chance. All in all, I would love to have stayed more than one night.

    « TIme Travel »

I loved this Castle Hotel. From setting eyes on the flags on the roof in the distance to leaving, I was very impressed. Staff all polite and helpful. Room in the West Wing a good size, smart bathroom, tea/coffee making facilities, tv etc. Lounge was amazing, it was as though the cast from Downton Abbey should walk in at any moment. Breakfast good choice of cereal, hot food, cold food, cater for all Evening meal - well we went in the Farmer's Bar and had a roast dinner, this was only 7 out of 10 because the room was empty and we felt like there was no atmosphere. Veg could have been better. Should have gone in the more expensive LAnsard restaurant. We know for next time. The grounds are lovely and the area is rolling hills.

    « Inflexible re booking »

Hi rang to book a room and was dire dry to the website-I have a visual impairment and contacted the website help desk to be assisted. I was specific in that I wanted a flexible booking. I was guided through the process. I now need to cancel the biking and find that I was wrongly assisted and find myself with a non refundable booking. I contacted Best Western who directed me to the hotel manager/owner as it is at their discretion and they have refused. So despite the claims on the website re acclaimed customer service I'm.not in receipt of this. I was offered the option to change the date but as I did explain to the owner I rarely go away due to.my visual impairment.. So I'm £153 out of pocke and no doubt they will let the room and be paid twice. MTH

    « Relaxing Valentines break »

Had a very pleasant stay, had a room in the annex and was pleasantly surprised as had read some bad reviews. The room was bright, clean and modern with a full bathroom and not just a shower room. We had booked the Valentine menu which was very nice, we would recommend this hotel to others and hope to be back soon.

« Murder Mystery Weekend Dissapointed »

Whilst the location is lovely overall I was dissapointed with the overall experience. We upgraded to the King James Suite. Itself was beyond fault. However the general service and complete lack of flexibility of the bar staff spoilt this visit. I was not told at the time of booking in that the paper card attached to the electronic door key was effectively my Id to pay at the bar. This led to significant distress on the Saturday night at the vastly over subscribed murder mystery event. Again payment could not be taken for drinks at the event bar by debit card. Causing a walk and constantly waiting for bar staff. The murder mystery was in my opinion vastly oversubscribed. Seating was cramped and the background noise was at time making the hosted event impossible to participate. Whilst we were asked to pre choose all three courses upon arrival at least one of the sweets ran out. Several of the 20+ friends were asked to make another choice. Being middle aged and in the company of over a dozen friends we were alarmed at some of the behaviour by two of the several + tables. I would be very interested to know if the local fire inspectorate realise so many people are seated in such a small room. Whilst we possibly had the largest suite in the castle the general temperature of the establishment was too high. We certainly had to open windows as several of the radiators did not respond to being switched off. Generally dissapointed.

    « Almost Peace & Quiet! »

Booked a 2 night break as we had always wanted to stay in a castle & was looking for a relaxing peaceful break. Check in was good. Staff friendly & helpful even spared the time to show us the dungeon. The double room was smaller than we expected mainly due to the bathroom being in a cupboard that had been built in the corner of the room to make it en-suite. I understand that the building will have limitations but still made the room very small. Not sure why there was no complimentary bottled water in the room as usually there is at this chain of hotels. You could get some from the reception but it was chargeable. First night just what we wanted. The second night was a completely different matter. There was an event booked that we had not been informed about when we booked. The noise started at 10.45pm & went on until midnight - thumping disco music non-stop. We were on the second floor and it was so loud we could even hear every announcement by the DJ and was so pleased when he announced last orders at the bar - last 15 mins. It took us a long time to get to sleep once everything had stopped and spoilt the whole weekend. We did not feel relaxed and refreshed as a break away should leave you feeling. If only we had been informed at the time of booking - I did call the hotel to check if we could have a high floor so a missed opportunity. Breakfast both days was very good and cooked to order and there was plenty of parking.

    « Very Disappointed »

My wife and I visited together with a party of friends for the much advertised Murder Mystery evening. The staff at reception were exceptionally friendly and even ensured that we were able to gain access to our room at 1:25pm instead of the usual 2:00pm. The room, which was in the West Wing annexe, was an adequate size though the decoration was very dark and dated. We both found the that the bed was small and very hard and did was not conducive towards a good night's sleep. Add to this that the room was very warm and there was no way to regulate it. My biggest problem with the room that I had to change the room key on SIX occasions as it continually refused to lt me gain access to the room. On the Friday night, together with friends, we had a bar meal was just about adequate: my burger was only just cooked and the chips were badly over cooked. Breakfast on both mornings was very good with pleasant and polite service though the staff were very slow in removing used cutlery and crockery. On the Saturday night we went to the Murder Mystery event at a cost of £26.95 a head. In my opinion the event was drastic over booked with over 100 people present. This mean t that as we were sat towards the back of the room we were unable to hear any of the proceedings that were taking place at the other side of the room. To add to this when I went to the bar I ordered a couple of pints of ?Black Sheep? beer, a renowned local brew and was told that it was only dispensed from the other bar and that this beer was not sold in the other bar either. When I offered to pay for the drinks with a credit card I was told that I would have to go to reception to pay as they did not have a credit card machine in that bar. The building itself is in an excellent quiet location but despite this I very much doubt if I would visit again.

    « A hidden gem »

I got married at Walworth Castle in September and would recommend it to any bride, Surinder is fantastic and every request was accommodated. Every single one of our guests said the wedding was 10/10. I have also been to a murder mystery night and for Valentine's Day night and both times it has been lovely. The staff go the extra mile and I always have a fantastic evening.

    « Lovely setting! »

The castle is in a lovely quiet rural setting with nice grounds and quite impressive from the outside and parking was easy. All the staff were lovely and very helpful (give yourselves a pat on the back) and the booking in process was very easy. However, our room was quite small, although the bed was comfortable. No room for my wheelchair so had to leave it in the corridor. I assume they don't have accessible rooms as we weren't offered one. I appreciate that this is a 12th century listed building and adaptations are limited but our room wasn't in the actual castle but in the annexe and grab rails in the shower would have been much appreciated as it can be very slippery, not just for me but for able bodied people too. We were there for a Murder/Mystery evening. Food was just O.K but it was hot. Bar prices were a little high but I suppose that was to be expected. To sum up, lovely setting, lovely staff, but I think Best Western needs to address accessibility.

    « Really Enjoyed »

Visited as couples on a Saturday - very impressed as we approached . Check in was friendly and efficient and we were soon directed to our castle rooms. The rooms had tall ceilings - and four poster beds. There was steps up and down out of the bathroom - all very olde worlde leaded windows- fab! Bottled water and robes were provided - large widescreen TV- no complaints. The decor was maybe a little dated but everything was clean. We went downstairs into the farmers bar and sitting by the open fire - the afternoon disappeared . We ate dinner in the main restaurant - the food and service were excellent and the four of us enjoyed ourselves. We slept well and breakfast was good. The hotel is officially a 3 star and I would say it's a very good 3 star- and with a bit of updating could be a 4 star. Definately good value.

My husband and I booked for one night b&b in the castle for a night away. We loved it.! Very excited to be staying in a castle.Reception was easy check in with very friendly staff on the front desk.our room was very warm, clean and large with a lovely clean bathroom.we booked in for the evening meal in the restaurant. It was very nice with great service and not expensive at all.we had a few drinks after our meal in the bar area around the fire which was very nice.breakfast was lovely with a great choice.we will definitely be visiting this fantastic castle again.Thank you to all staff for making our stay so relaxing.

    « A Castle that is a great venue »

Walworth Castle is a great venue for a romantic weekend away for couples, but is also great for businessmen requiring hotel accommodation near Durham and surrounding area. The better rooms are actually within the castle itself, but the newer wing rooms are well appointed. Having a choice of restaurants with the formal and informal available. The food is very good, and the portions a good. A very comfortable hotel that I will return to again and again.

« Excellent staff and dining experience »

We have just returned from a two night break, our second stay at Walworth Castle and what proved to be a nice break. We were very pleased with the service and staff from our arrival and throughout our stay. Reception staff were helpful and check in was speedy and efficient. The waiter in the dining room, Steve, was outstanding providing excellent service for both evenings and also for breakfast on our day of departure. It must also be said that the food was outstanding on all counts. the hotel is very proud of sourcing local ingredients and without fail these were fantastic. We had room 12 and this was our only area of disappointment. It is located in the West Wing immediately adjacent to 3 steps which meant in the layout of the room that the en suite was up 3 steps and was acually very small. For adults the en suite room was not really adequate, and added to the bed being smaller than we are used to meant that we were somewhat disappointed with this aspect. The hotel is located a few miles outside Darlington, very convenient for A1 and ideally placed to explore Durham, the coast and North Yorkshire Moors. We would definitely stay here again, but request a different room.

« On route to Scotland and came across this little gem! »

Booked this last minute as a stop over on route to Edinburgh from London, got a super deal, so really wasn't expecting too much, however, was totally surprised with the beautiful setting of this hotel when we arrived! Set in lovely grounds a couple of miles off the main road, and when you approach the castle itself you can't help but feel a smile on your face! We had a room in the castle itself which was quirky with its high ceilings, tapestry wall pictures and heavy drapes on the window, but with all the mod-cons you need for your stay. The only thing negative was I couldn't get warm, even with the heating on hot! (Probably the ghosts!) We met friends for dinner and stayed in the restaurant to dine. The food was amazing, three courses for £21 and the service was perfect. Totally over expected my expectations which was a pleasant surprise! Would defiantly stay again!

    « Nice Character Hotel »

Old traditional castle hotel. The hotel seems well appointed, the public areas and the bedroom was clean and comfortable. Only minus was the bedroom being a little cold, but there was an additional fan heater available. Evening food in the bar was very good. Good item selection available for breakfast.

    « Attended a wedding here on the Saturday 5th March 2016 »

A lovely hotel for the venue, reception staff very welcoming, nothing was too much trouble for them.Room was very clean and everything to hand.My only complaints was the mattress was very hard and well worn, could do with a new one in room 27.Also the room was very cold due to the nature of the hotel not having double glazing.Saying that the staff brought us a small convector heater which soon warmed the room up nicely. Food at the reception was well presented and hot.Staff here again second to none, well done.Would I stay hear again yes as nothing was too much trouble.

    « Murder Mystery Event »

Visited the castle for an overnight stay and murder mystery event. Check in was friendly and efficient. We enjoyed coffee in the comfortable lounge. However we had booked a disabled room and found that the adaptations were minimal. There was no walk in shower or grab handles in the bathroom and I am pleased I was not in my wheelchair as there was very little space in the bedroom to manoeuvre. The evening's event was very enjoyable but the room it was held in was very cold. Breakfast in the morning offered lots of choice and my friends and I all enjoyed it. The staff throughout were all very friendly and helpful. So a mixed review, with some tweaks this could be an excellent venue.

    5
    « A great place to celebrate »

We had booked the Tower Library Room to celebrate a special occasion with a small group of friends. From the initial booking the staff, particularly Surinda, could not have been more friendly and helpful and on the day of our celebration, our waiter, Andrew, was attentive, friendly, professional and impressive in all respects. The food was delicious and beautifully presented and we were allowed to eat and celebrate very privately. I will definitely be going back to Walworth Castle and may sample the accommodation there and I would highly recommend the food there and also the Castle as a venue for a celebration.

« 'in laws afternoon birthday tea' »

Booked for afternoon tea with in-laws and 2 young children, special request of jam. Nutella and ham sandwiches catered for (all separate) the children! Food for 4 adults was plenty however, I would have preferred more sandwiches rather than cakes, scone with jam and cream, lemon posset, macaroons and madelenes. All the food was tasty and what we didn't eat was boxed up so we could bring it home. Staff were polite and courteous and were very accommodating to all especially the children getting them crayons and colouring paper. Recommended place to go for afternoon tea for all the family, good quality food at a very reasonable price, with it also being the cheapest place around the area!

    « Upgrade to a suite »

We had seen the castle a few times and also had a meal there before, booking in was really easy and the receptionist was very friendly. We were given room 17 the room was nice and in the castle but it wasn't what I expected so we asked if we could upgrade. This we did and we were not disappointed we had room 16 we had a lovely seating area with views out over the fields, bathroom was huge and had a corner jacuzzi bath sink and loo. We did try the jacuzzi out but when we turned it there was a putrid smell coming through, it smelt like a sewer, so much saw we had to empty the water and put fresh in, this was my only gripe. Our bedroom was in the castle round turret and it was lovely and comfortable. We had paid for bed breakfast and eventing meal and our meal in the evening was sublime. I had garlic mushrooms, other half had black pudding and panchetta, main was steak which was gorgeous other half had stew and parsnip stew and dumplings which he throughly enjoyed. Then coffee to finish sheer bliss. All in all we had a lovely short break and will definitely be returning as I'm looking forward to their murder mystery night.

    « Beautiful castle »

We stayed in a suite and were impressed at the size and cleanliness of room. Yes there were signs of wear and tear but we wouldnt think it wouldnt due to age and cost of room. Good value for money. We had a meal in the bar which was fairly priced and tasty. Breakfast was lovely with a good choice although my husband was disappointed it didnt come with beans, but then again he never asked if this was possible. We asked a young man on reception about the dungeon and although it wasnt open at the time he was kind enough to take us down and give us a little tour and background of the history, we were impressed. Ad the weather was cold and very windy we didnt go far but would definately return when the weather improves as we would love to visit the birds of prey and enjoy a drink outside. All in all a lovely historic castle ideal for a romantic get away.

    « A hidden gem- who knew? »

I've been looking for a castle for myself and my son to stay in for some time as I thought it would be a great experience for him. Needless to say all castle hotels were very expensive so I'd just about given up hope when I stumbled on Walworth Castle - only half an hour away in Darlington. They had a cheap winter rate available during half term so I snapped it up. The castle looked exactly like portrayed on their website, the staff were lovely, organising a tour for us to see the dungeons and the rooms used for weddings (which are amazing - if I'd known about it 12 years ago I would have loved to have been married there). Nothing was too much trouble for them. The lady on reception even rang once we were in our room to check everything was Ok and we had everything we needed - now that's customer service. There isn't much to do around the castle in winter but there are lovely seating areas inside with lovely warm log fires, a gorgeous restaurant and bar where food is also available. My son really enjoyed his power shower in the huge bathroom. We had a good night sleep and breakfast the next day was spot on. ~I can't recommend this place enough. Its fantastic. We travelled by train from newcastle to darlington and paid £15 for a taxi to the hotel. I can't believe I didn't know about this place. Thank you so much everyone at Walworth, I really hope we come back.

    « Valentines Visit »

Stayed here on Saturday 13/02 for Valentines weekend with my partner. The hotel is in a beautiful spot and is visually stunning. The castle is obviously very old and has plenty of character about the place although there are signs of wear and tear, particularly in the annex where we were staying and the window in our room was in urgent need of replacing. The room itself was adequate for a one night stay although it was a little cold but nothing an electric fan heater, (supplied by the hotel), couldn't sort out. The shower in the bathroom wasn't very good. The Valentines meal was very average, in a freezing cold conservatory and we felt rushed by the staff, this was the low point of our stay as we expected a little more for the price. The staff in general were kind and polite. The breakfast was tasty although a little top heavy on price. In all, a great location and hotel and ideal for a one night stay although would be expecting a little more if I was to stay for any longer than one night; certainly worth paying a visit to due to its character alone.

« My partners birthday weekend »

I booked this weekend for my partners birthday. we had a suite with a 4 poster bed. Included with our room was breakfast on both days and an evening meal on the first night. Food was fantastic, staff were pleasant and very helpful. On the Saturday as my mother in law was only 45 minutes away we decided to invite her over in the afternoon for afternoon tea. We have had many afternoon teas both in UK and abroad, the Ritz 3 time and we both agreed the standard and selection was the best we have ever had. Room was clean and warm (being up north!!) Love our stay and would come again.

    « Great romantic destination »

Walworth Castle is a lovely romantic retreat, with the added benefit of being an historic building.with many architectural features. It has modern touches, but it still retains an olde world atmosphere which just adds to the romance of the building.

« Annex very thin walls »

Second time I stayed here and the annex is a modern addition to the hotel and the walls are paper thin, especially if you get a noisy neighbour. I cannot understand why you would build a hotel with walls like this. The rest of the stay was pleasant enough and the food is really good, big portions, try the mixed grill off the bar menu.

We had our wedding breakfast and evening reception at Walworth castle and I can only describe it as amazing. Surinder and Steve very so helpful throughout and Steve could not do enough for us during the whole time there. The castle has beautiful surroundings and the food was delicious. A big thank you to all staff we both had a amazing time and we will definitely be coming back again xx

« ' Treated like royalty in Walworth Castle, can't wait to return!! »

Both Andrew the manager and Auriele on reception helped to give this hotel such a personal but professional touch which was a refreshing change from the corporate orientation of modern hotels. We felt so welcome and so at home in the comfortable and relaxing hotel with its individual charm, tasteful decor and excellent setting. We sampled the 3 course dinner which was very tasty and well presented with a lovely touch of pre -starter nibbles. The location was superb to visit the town of Durham and Richmond as well as Hadrian's Wall and Beamish. The bed was comfortable and the room was clean. We plan to return later in the year.

The service with the lady on reception was great think her name was arialle or something similar. The room was lovely , the decor was superb. We went down to the resturant my husband chose the risotto and I HD the soup . Great taste and presentation. We will deffinantly be returning.

    « 5* service. »

Booked for my birthday surprise and had a great stay. The hotel is in a lovely secluded location and looks every bit the part with its towers and mullioned windows. The best part however was the staff. The most attentive, polite and cheerful people I have met in ages. Other hotels please note! From the young workers to the more mature staff they were a real credit. The hotel was lovely with lots of character and very clean and welcoming. The food in the restaurant and the bar was very good and prices very reasonable. We were upgraded to a suite on 2nd floor in one of the towers with 4 poster and separate lounge. Very quiet and nicely furnished. Bedroom was a little cold but they supplied a fan heater which helped a lot. Will definitely be back here again as the staff just made it for us. Smashing!

    « Overnight stay »

Stopped at the hotel overnight as a small getaway to celebrate the new year. The hotel is secluded and is visually stunning. The lobby area, lounge and pub are all well kept and all members of staff were friendly and attentive. The food in the pub wasn't amazing but was very reasonable for the cost. Drinks were also reasonably priced. I'd upgraded our room to a four poster in the castle. As others have mentioned, the furniture consists of some themed and also an Ikea work desk. There were a few cobwebs on the ceiling and the window area. The bed was impressive but a little odd. A divan bed has been placed in the frame of the four poster bed on top of the original bed slats/wood. It's that high that you actually have to take a run and jump to get onto it and its quite dangerous in the night as you forget just how high it is in the dark. The bathroom was lovely, very modern with large towels and robes. What you'd expect really! All in all a lovely stay but there are a few areas which could be improved.

    « A bit dissapointing »

I was going to give this three stars as the whole experience generally averaged out, but breakfast tipped it towards two stars. So, the good stuff.. it is indeed a beautiful castle on the outside in lovely grounds. Average.. I read the castle was originally converted to a hotel in 1981 but has been recently refurbished. Unfortunately some of that inconsiderate dated conversion still shows in places. Some public spaces are lovely, reception is oddly enclosed giving you a poor first impression, and then there are weird bits like a corridor that feels like a service corridor alongside the kitchens. One end of the bar is charming with original beams and a nice log burner, the other end is like an 80s throw back with a pine bar area and an overload of fake beams. OK, it's a castle, it's a bit quirky. Also, be warned, it's a castle, it's really draughty and cold away from that log burner (although having doors wide open probably didn't help). The poor.. our dinner in the bar was like a school dinner, slightly soapy veg and swimming in far too much gravy. Our room in the West Wing was tiny and oddly laid out (looking at the fire exit plan it looks like the rooms are all of different sizes). There was some rubbish left in the room left by the previous guest down the side of the bed which suggests it wasn't cleaned properly (although actually the room otherwise did seem clean.. but these little things make a big difference to your experience). And finally, the sharp intake of breath moment... apart from juice and cereals breakfast is a 'to-order' affair. Unfortunately you are only allowed to order one thing of the menu. I tried ordering eggs on toast and some cooked meat/cheese on the side (hardly seemed greedy??), but I was told I couldn't. Breakfast isn't exactly cheap so just tipped the balance.

    « Christmas Carvery »

This was our second Christmas Carvery lunch at Walworth and was very disappointed compared to last time. It wasn't awful- it was average and nothing special. also a completely different atmosphere compared to last time we went, with the exception of the older guy who was working the bar who was very pleasant, the rest of the staff seemed very stressed, inexperienced and/or sour faced. We hadn't even sat down & settled in before our orders for starters and desserts were asked for - even though it was obvious most of us hadn't even had a chance to look at the menu the guy stood over us until we made our choices quickly and without thought. We hadn't even put in a drink order! The starters were very nice, no complaints there. The main course - the plates were tiny! Also I had 2 tiny cuts of Turkey, The girl serving had obviously been told 2 slices but as mine was first cut from the small end of a rolled Turkey Crown (which was very tasty) it was so small I had to hunt my plate to find it! Surely common sense could have been applied. The vegetables were very nice- cant fault them and so were the Yorkshires. No parsnips though? Dessert was nice enough- I had some chocolate thing but cant remember the name as I stated earlier didn't really get a chance to digest the menu and take in the names! The service was rushed and without thought-not a problem any other day but expect better Christmas day. Would I go back again for Christmas? No. It wasn't bad but it definitely wasn't good and I expected more for my money than I got.

    « Fantasic Party Night »

We had our Christmas Party here on 19/12/15 and what a fantastic night we all had. There were 28 of us and we all agreed it was one of the best we had been to. The food was amazing and cooked to perfection. I really cannot rave enough about the food. Even the vegetables, which are normally over cooked at this type of function, were perfect. The Staff were all friendly and went out of their way to be helpful. I would particularly like to thank Mary and Debbie on reception. We all stayed in the Hotel and the rooms were all nice and most importantly clean. There is not one negative thing I can say about the Hotel, the food or the staff. Thank you Walworth Castle for making our Christmas Party Night so much fun.

    « Excellent!!!! »

We arrived on Tuesday 15th of December for 3 nights, what a welcome!!! Ariela the receptionist was so warm and gave us a great insight to the castle, felt like we were visiting family due to her manner. On the 2nd day on coming back our key would not work in the door, Stephen the manager tried what he could then apologised and asked if we would mind moving rooms, we did not mind. As we were going through reception ariela gave us a cheeky smile. You can imagine our faces when we seen our new room....stunning and so much very appreciated!!! The food the staff and the hotel were fantastic...hats off to Best Western!!! You definitely know how to run this hotel...will be back.

    « excellent »

from reception right through to the dining room everything went smoothly due to the professionalism of the staff. the food was top notch, room a pleasure to sleep in and Mary on reception was very professional and knowledgable. the service at both evening meal and breakfast was wonderful. all in all a great stay. try the hotels own website for offers as we got a better deal than the late booking companies were offering.

    « I don't belieeeeve it! »

Booked this on secret escapes to get away after a family bereavement for £89 including breakfast, thought a little luxury would be welcome and as this was promoted as 53% off my expectations were high. Unfortunately, it was the smallest room I have stayed in outside of London, any feel of opulence quickly drained away as soon as we walked though the door, my partner kept banging his knees on the bed legs whilst trying to navigate the room which resulted in a few choice words, which were probably heard by both rooms either side as the walls are so thin we heard all of their activities. The room furniture was a strange mix of ikea and mock period, the sink and mirror in the bathroom seemed like they had been salvaged from an infant school they was so incredibly low. I realise the staff probably have very little influence on what are fundamental building design flaws, indeed the staff were very helpful. The exterior castle building and public rooms are impressive and the hotel and room was clean. My scrambled eggs were fine but my partner had the full English breakfast which seemed dry as sticks as it lacked beans or tinned tomatoes. Having looked online it would seem that there are comparable deals to be had and we did not get our bargain luxury experience, which is the primary reason as a fair and seasoned reviewer I have scored it so poorly to reflect my disappointment.

    « Sunday Lunch »

Very good quality Sunday carvery as always. Lovely surroundings and our nearly 2 year old enjoyed playing in the outside play area despite the cold weather afterwards. In line with other decent quality and good value Best Western hotels - however repeatedly disappointed by the customer service skills of a certain bar member who seems to treat customers with disdain.

    « Strange smell »

Came here for a murder mystery night with work colleagues, entertainment was good, meal was poor, typical Xmas fare, I understand it is an old building but the smell of drains next to an eating place is unacceptable

    « Excellent through out »

Booked hotel through a late deal website, was pleasently surprised by everything at the hotel, the room was an upgrade to a castle room with four poster bed & was tastefully decorated throughout. Receptionist on Saturday evening & Sunday morning exceptionally helpful & pleasant as was waitress ( didn't get names which a shame because both deserve a mention ) If I had one minor criticism the evening meal was delicious & well presented even tho the hotel was busy with a wedding + Christmas party , but most ingredients appear on menu twice making it slightly limited on choices ie black pudding starter & pork main course with black pudding! That said the food was off a very good standard. I definitely hope to return! A lovely stay thank you.

    « Walworth Castle »

Visually impressive and with a friendly and welcoming staff, the Walworth Castle was an excellent place to stay. The rooms were clean and comfortable, and the staff pleasant and professional. The breakfast and bar meals were ample and tasty. My only slight reservations are that our room was a little small, and it would be good to have cask ale in the bar, however I would be happy to stay here again.

We will definitely be looking into booking for next year thank you for a very memorable weekend.

    « Murder Mystery Night »

attended a murder mystery evening with my wife last Saturday night which included an overnight stay. The entertainment provided by amateur actors was excellent the "murder" being portrayed between courses of a lovely three course meal. Diners are the detectives and because we were a party of two we joined the adjacent table of six. The food was very good, the acting top rate and the hotel staff were second to none. After a good nights sleep (in a 4-poster bed) we had a substantial full English breakfast and left satisfied with a great visit.

    « a nice little surprise »

Stayed here in late November as we were dining in the nearbye Raby Hunt. Was a little worried as to what to expect after some of the negative reviews but i can honestly say we really enjoyed our stay. The building looks lovely on aproach aspecially at night and although we were in the west wing the standard and furnishings etc were really good. Staff are friendly and informative and helped out with our taxi to the restaurant. Didnt stay for dinner or breakfast but the restaurant was set up before we arrived and looked nice. Free wifi throughout the hotel. Will return.

    « Wedding stay »

Visited this beautiful hotel attending a wedding yesterday. On arrival at 12 for the 13.30 wedding though our room was ready we couldn't check in unless we paid £25 early check in fee. Very disappointing and unnecessary as it was £97 per room for the night and a very small room at that. We asked if there was a courtesy room offered to get ready in but no was the answer. We feel this was poor value for money. Shame really as this poor customer service lets the hotel down.

    2
    « Hotel stay »

The room was not as fully functional as it should have been, it was cold and some electric sockets either didn't work or were not fastened to the wall properly. The bathroom radiator didn't work at all. The central heating boiler must have been near our room - it came on at 6am and it was impossible to sleep through its racket. Tea and coffee at meal times was nothing better than warm water - nothing to tell it was either tea or coffee. Very disappointing. Not upto Best Western standards.

    4
    « Beautiful rural setting »

Main building is set in a castle the main rooms benefit from many period features which add to the ambience of the place. The place is let down slightly by the West Wing which could do with some redecoration. The grounds are extensive and are a joy to explore

    « just by chance »

we pulled of the A1 a week ago, and found this Hotel, although they were in the middle of a wedding reception they found us a small but adequate room with all that is comfortable for a one night stay in the middle of a long journey. We had a very good meal at the farmers bar with attentive and friendly service from Tony and Bea. All in all a very pleasant stay.

    4
    « Fantastic exterior & interior »

The exterior of the hotel is very imposing and impressive as is the reception area and the public areas with plenty of free parking around the hotel. My room was well furnished although the bed was rather hard and the desk/dressing table was rather low. The room had free WiFi although the speed was a bit slow. There is very little mobile reception inside the hotel and you have to go out into the car park to get a signal. Dinner in the bar area was rather disappointing as I'd selected a Barnsley chop and asked for it medium rare only for the waiter to come back and say the chef could only do it well done which was rather annoying so I changed to a steak which was a bad choice as it was chewy and rather tasteless with not very good chips and huge bland onion rings. Breakfast was much better with everything being freshly cooked and of good quality although for some reason the black pudding seemed to have been deep fried and was much to crispy. Overall a good experience but the food in the evening needs improving.

    « Kev's Trip »

I have been to this Hotel twice, once on business the other a little pleasure trip. The first time I stopped in the newer part of the Hotel, the room had all the usual facilities expected in a modern hotel, the only issue was the walls where paper thin. So romantic intentions would have to be very quiet:) The second time my Wife and I stopped for a couple of nights, this time in the older part. The first room we had was a nice size, the only issue was no TV control(no hardship) but the bed was very hard. We requested to move rooms the following morning, the staff put us in another room, lovely bed this time. I can't comment on the food, as we didn't eat there, choosing to eat out in the local area. The staff where a credit to the Hotel, nothing too much trouble. Would I stay here again, certainly:)

« An amazing event in an amazing castle! »

We spent the night at the castle after a family wedding. We booked via LateRooms and got a decent deal on a small room, it was all we needed although I have to say it was very very small, you couldn't swing a cat in it! Fine for us, it was only for sleeping in. I got asked to go to reception by the lady who checked us in and she said there was something wrong in our room and she needed to move us. Fair enough, we expected to be moved into a similar room but then she said we would be getting an upgrade. Great! Well it was much much more than great, we ended up with a suite and a 4 poster bed. Absolutely amazing! Great service, great staff, amazing organisation for the wedding which went off without a hitch. Wish the weather had been better so we could have had a walk around the grounds this morning but I can't complain as the views from the windows in our room were utterly beautiful.

« Decent value for money »

As a last minute booking I was surprised to get a room here at less then £50. I dare say I was in the lesser part of the hotel; however the room wasn't bad at all and certainly more modern then the gorgeous castle/hotel itself. For me the bed wasn't the comfiest however opinions will always be divided on this but I found the service and "pub style" food very good! The menu on offer was really good and the food complimented this! The drinks from the bar however were way to expensive! I always thought the further south you travel in the UK the dearer the pint/wine!? I would happily stay here again all being said and would probably pay that bit more to have a more refined/special room.

« would definitely stay again - shame is was a short visit. »

We booked in to the hotel at the last minute. Arrived late (9pm) and left first thing in the morning..... however..... When we arrived the hotel looked and felt really clean and reception were expecting us and ready to show us to our room. Very polite and attentive. Advised re the bar, lounge, our room and breakfast in detail. The room we were allocated was lovely, a tad cosy maybe but was fine for me and my husband for a short night stay and a steal really for what we paid. We had a drink at the bar and then went off to the room to relax. In the room we couldn't get the TV to work so asked for some help from reception.... The remote would not work with our TV..... So they moved us rooms... A little embarrassing really as we could have lived without it...... The room we were moved to was lovely and had a four poster bed (glad I moved now!) Nothing was too much trouble, the room was lovely and the rest of the hotel was very clean and well presented, costs including the bar were not too bad either. Very lovely stay and I would definitely return. We wish we could have spent more time looking at the hotel if we had it as it was a beautiful old building.

At last minute we needed a local hotel to stay in for the night and rang Walworth Castle to see if they could accommodate us. Not only did they fit us in without a problem, but the staff couldn't have been more helpful and pleasant. We ate in the restaurant, which had a great atmosphere and the food was lovely. Room was charming - it is a castle after all ! Made to feel really welcome. We will return.

    « WONDERFUL STAY! »

Spent 2 nights in a four poster suite. The bathroom and lounge were modern but the bedroom was in the style you would expect from a castle of this age. The bed and pillows were the best we have ever had in a hotel. We ate in the restaurant both nights and was surprised on our wedding anniversary with a bottle of champagne and rose petals on the table. A very big thank you, it was a lovely surprise. The food is excellent and served nice and hot, not lukewarm as served in many hotels. The castle and its staff are a credit to its management and owners. The views from our windows were wonderful. Breakfast was served in the Farmers Bar and was well cooked and enjoyable. Will we return, most definitely!

Travelled 3 hours to stay at Walworth castle for a night, as a birthday gift and it was brilliant. Was upgraded free of charge to a four poster room due to it being a birthday, and all the staff were excellent, to making sure the price wasn't said so the birthday guest didn't know. Fab location and the castle was very authentic.

    « Beautiful place »

I booked a castle room with breakfast and a 3 course meal for my partners birthday. We had room 25. The staff were friendly and very helpful. The meal was the best i had eaten in a long time. There was rose petals on our table and a candle in my partners dessert. We couldnt have had a better night. Breakfast was amazing. The room was spacious and had everything we needed. The only thing wrong was the mattress was so hard that it became painful, and both myself and my partner couldnt sleep. If there was a sofa in the room i would have slept on that. Overall it was fabulous and would definitely return but just ask for a room with a softer mattress. I am even considering having my wedding here.

« Smashing place to stay but needs new beds certainly in room 2 »

We stayed for just one night and found the hotel to ideally located close enough to Darlington but far enough away to enjoy the tranquil surroundings lots of character and great staff the breakfast was unbeatable, We stayed in the annexe so the room was a little small but adequate, Clean and fresh the only thing I can fault was the bed it was hard so hard to be uncomfortable in fact as I woke for the umpteenth time I even pondered sleeping on the floor

    « Afternoon tea a real dissapointment »

My wife and I called here for afternoon tea having been given a Red Letter Day gift earlier in the year. Whilst the sandwiches provided were very nice and fresh, the so cold "dainties " were very poor indeed. The scones were tasteless and dry, as were the lemon cake and profiteroles. We will call again in a few months time, as believe it or not, we have been given a second Red Letter Day gift to this location. Let's hope it's improved.

    « walworth castle »

Walworth castle was very impressive from the outside and the main areas i.e. the main reception area, dining area and bar area were all well kept and in keeping with the style of the property. however the room we stayed in seemed more like staff accommodation not in the main castle itself we had to walk passed the kitchen which was very noisy and busy with people coming and going. The room was compact but was clean and tidy and met our needs for the stay.

Stayed here for work for a couple of nights. The staff are good and the rooms in the annex seem reasonable. I understand that the rooms in the main hotel building are better. The set meal for dinner was really nice and good value. You order your breakfast from the table so you might not get as much as you may want. I am sure you can ask for more.

Went to meet some friends from Darlington & had a delicious meal at the hotel with them . The service & menu were both really good & we all enjoyed the meals & wine . Our room was inside the main castle & was a good standard which met all our needs .

walworth castle was a very good place to stay. The rooms were a good size and were confortable, the staff very friendly and helpful, and the location/setting was fantastic. I would very much recommend this hotel to anyone wanting to stay in this area.

« Amazing weekend in Amazing surroundings? »

On arrival you turn into the gravel driveway leading upto the entrance to the Castle and enter into the reception area. The receptionists were lovely?very polite and friendly but more informations should have been given with regards to how evening meal and breakfasts work. We were given our room and asked if we needed a hand with our bags (If I had known that we had 3 flights of stairs to get up I would have accepted) The staircase if impressive if a trifle noisy on walking up and down them. On entering our from I quickly realised that my husband had booked a suite as a surprise for our 40th Wedding Anniversary and it was amazing a corridor let through an arch into our lounge area with a large lcd tv and tv box and a comfortable settee this let into our bathroom which had a large jacuzzi bath and was a really good sized room. You walked a bit further down the corridor and into the bathroom which had a lovely 4 poster bed which was impressive, but could do with a new mattress as it was rock solid and so 2 nights of not very much sleep was had?it was also about 3 ft tall and needed a step of some sort to in and out of it and was on the small side too but looked impressive. We went down to dinner at our preferred time and although the food was lovely in the main dining room it was pricey and not very big portions. (plus it hadn't been explained at booking in that you could also use the bar menu to the amount alloted for your meal and pay for anything over the set amount of money. Our drinks were ordered and did come quickly but the wine we ordered was just plonked unopen on the table. It was not opened, poured and sampled before hand (wasn' tupto standards of the venue) First course arrived quickly but had to wait a while for plates exc to be cleared. By this time our waiter allotted to the dining room had disappeared and it took ages for the plates to be cleared and the next course to arrive and then we sat about an 3/4 hour for the main meal to be cleared away and further time for the sweet order to be ordered and brought back. The next morning we came down to breakfast and again it took ages for orders to be taken (toast ordered and 2 miserly thin slices of cheap toast brought to the table) Cooked breakfast was lovely though. We went out for the day to return later to find the wedding they had booked in had taken over the hotel. The carpark was full and on entering the hotel the entrance was full of wedding guests and we were looked on and commented on as should of not being there. They were very rude. We had paid a fair amount for this special 30th anniversary away and made to feel like interlopers. We decided to go for a walk as we couldn't get near the bar or lounge areas. We came back in an hour later and luckily they had all retired to their allotted banquet room. We went into the bar for a drink and decided to book into there for our evening meal. The evening meal in the bar was lovely and we really enjoyed our evening We retired to our room only to be awakened abruptly by the fire alarm going off right next to the bed at 8.30 in the morning. I have rheumatoid Arthritis and it was painful enough to get up and into the bed (as no step) but I was so shocked that I fell out of the bed injuring my already painful knees. The sound quickly went off but we decided to get ready which is a slow and painful experience at anytime without hurting myself falling out of the bed. No body could be seen coming out of the building so we carried on getting ready? alarm went off a bit, on and off, on and off?still no one coming our of building (nobody went around the floors letting people know what was going on) I went out into the hall and an elderly gentleman who's wife is also disabled said he would find out what was going on. People were sticking their heads out of rooms wondering what they should do. He came back to say it was a false alarm?surely it was upto staff to go round telling people that not a customer (I tried to tell reception about the alarm going off and hurting myself but they didn't seem to listen to me). Of course because everyone had been woke up everyone decended on the dining room at the same time and whoa ?how to cope?we couldn't get into the dining room and had to take a table in the lounge?(surely the dining room was for main hotel guests and lounge should be for guests from the wing. We were stuck in the lounge and left for an hour while waiting for someone to take our order and serve us?4 waiter and waitresses were serving on the dining room tables. There was also a poor selection on the self serve breakfast area and not a yogurt in sight. My breakfast came out with uncooked and raw black pudding on the plate?yuk. Please don't get me wrong we had a wonderful weekend in a gorgeous Castle but just some aspects spoiled it that could have easily (and after so many years of being a hotel should be none existing) been avoided.

    « Nice Place »

Had a one night break at this 12th century castle in lovely grounds. The bar was fine but could have been more comfortable the restaurant was nice food was good. The four poster room was small but adequate the only thing was I found annoying was the bathroom light instead of being on a switch was operated by a sensor and timer which was not good through the night also needed another bedside lamp to read by. Must cost a lot of money to up keep such a large place but doing their besn
