Made reservation well in advance through booking.com. Used the booking app to pay in full one hour before check in. At the check in desk the staff member asked me for my card for payment, I told him I paid in full an hour ago through the app. He said I definitely don't see anything about a payment in the system. So I pulled out my phone and showed him the payment confirmation with details, time stamp, balance paid, balance due, location, dates etc. He reiterated he didn't see it in the system and in the same breath told me he was going to run the payment. Then he asked me to check to see if it “double dinged” me, like the only way to know was to just run it again and check my bank account. Sure enough, he charged me twice despite me having just shown him company letterhead e-mail documentation that I had already been charged and owed nothing. He then said “that's the problem with using 3rd parties for booking, it didn't update in our system. You'll PROBABLY get a refund when you checkout, sorry about that”. Insinuating the problem is my fault for using booking.com, now $600 of my vacation money is held hostage for 48 hours and there is absolutely nothing this guy can do about it except apologize because he didn't take an extra 2 minutes to verify the payment. I called corporate customer service and they told me the same thing, sorry nothing we can do about it. The TV in the bedroom would turn on but wouldn't connect to any network or apps so we couldn't watch it. When I told the front desk they apologized and said there wasn't anything they could do about it besides move us to a smaller room. Dishes in the kitchen suite were dirty. Hope you love beige on browns, every interior color is tan and tope. It's dark inside even with all the lights on.
Thank you for providing us a chance to address this issue, Brian. We apologize for the issues you encountered with Booking.com. There can be a time lapse as to when we receive payment or reservation information when changes are made on their website. The site does say a credit card will need to be presented at check-in and will be authorized for incidentals. Any banking transactions and drop-off authorizations may take time to see. I am sorry our decor didn't please you. We try to keep our colors warm and neutral to allow for a relaxed environment that appeals to most. Thank you for choosing to stay with us and we hope to see you again!
The room was good! We had a water view which I really enjoyed. I appreciated the way the room was laid out…very spacious and clean. I like having the sink separate from the toilet and tub/shower. I very much appreciated the little fridge and microwave! If I were just rating the room itself, I would give it 4 stars. The breakfast included in the room price was the worst hotel breakfast I have ever encountered…and we travel a lot and often stay at Best Western hotels. The breakfast room itself was small and very crowded. The coffee was cold, They were out of eggs…many people went without. I went and asked the kitchen staff if there were any more eggs. She finally brought some out. They were cold as was the sausage. The muffins and biscuits were stale. We checked out and had breakfast at McDonald's (a five-minute drive from the hotel).!
Thank you for your review. We are pleased you enjoyed the well-appointed room at our hotel, as our staff tries to provide the best and most comfortable space for guests. I am sorry you did not enjoy our complimentary breakfast. We appreciate your patience as our breakfast host works to refill popular menu items at the busiest dining times. Our team is happy to make restaurant suggestions if you wish to enjoy a leisurely meal.
The people working at the hotel were very nice when we checked in. We were greeted cordially by a young guy at the front desk who also made a recommendation for dinner after we asked him where to eat. The lobby was cozy, even without its fireplace running. This hotel was great. The guest room was very spacious. The pool was also larger than most pools of other hotels. There was also a hot tub, that we used. My husband commented on how much he liked the jets in the hot tub. Although I found the towels to be very thin and not very soft, my overall experience was excellent. We liked the location within an easy walking distance to town and being next to a walkway by the river that we enjoyed walking on. Some people mentioned sea lion noise in their reviews of this hotel, but apparently it wasn't sea lion season in Astoria. I was told by the guy at the front desk that the sea lions went to California for the season. We stayed there back in 2022 and would likely stay again when in the area.
We are delighted you enjoyed another great stay at the Best Western Columbia River Waterfront Hotel in Astoria, Karoleigh. We appreciate your lovely review of our friendly service and clean, comfortable rooms. We hope you will return soon to have another positive stay. The sea lions will return at the end of summer.
This is a work in progress. The interior is plush with classy amenities. The outside is being created. Therefore, it was a delight to experience at a low cost for the time being.
Thank you for your review and great travel tip. We are delighted you enjoyed a wonderful experience at the Best Western in Astoria. We hope you will return to visit us again.
Excellent hotel with everything we needed for the trip. Room was clean, hotel was nice and the staff was friendly. My kids loved the pool and we really enjoyed our stay.
Gregory, we are delighted that you and your family enjoyed our service and comfortable rooms at the Best Western Columbia River Waterfront in Astoria. We hope you will think of us again when you return to the Oregon Coast.
Good place to stay, but there is a seal colony nearby which barks constantly and loudly. If you're staying in a room facing the river, you'll need earplugs in order to sleep. Otherwise, my room was comfortable and clean.
SFVguy, Thank you for your review. We provide those earplugs and white noise machines to help with the sounds of the sea lions. Many guests enjoy their presence, and we would be glad to place you on the opposite side of the property should you stay with us again in Astoria.
Hotel was great . Great location . Clean and comfy . Staff was nice. Sea Lions. Coffee and shopping at boardwalk nearby . Walking path and trolly pick up . Goonies house . The reason I gave 4-5 stars is due to the price point . We travel around the country and world including all major tourist hubs . New York .California . Asia. You name it all world class destinations with expensive hotels . So we are used to paying . The price point here was excessive .
Thank you for your review. We are glad you enjoyed your stay at the Best Western Columbia River Waterfront Hotel, Astoria. We believe our rates are comparable to those of similar hotels in the area, and we hope you will return to enjoy another off-the-beaten-path experience with us again.
Great hotel, clean, modern, great staff. Right on the Columbia River. Breakfast was fast, hot and tasty. The Sea Lions barking were a nice touch....LOL. Great place to stay in Astoria.
We are delighted you enjoyed the awesome service and comfort of the Best Western Columbia River Waterfront Hotel in Astoria, Howard. Thank you for the wonderful review of our breakfast and comfortable rooms. We will let the sea lions know you enjoyed their lullaby during the night.
Sunday evening crush for check-in caused delay in getting to our room. Pleasant river view from room window with commuter train tracks and bike trail below. Quiet. Our rate seemed high ($300) for our one-night stay, but there seemed to be a lot parents with school-age children; possible sports tournament?
Thank you, Mtscribe, for your review. We host many families at our location, and the pool and trolley are kid-friendly attractions. We apologize for the Summer time travel activity at our location. We would love to share another, more peaceful stay with you in the future.
The hide a bed was worn out, horribly uncomfortable. There was no room in the parking lot for my car. Not the Hotels fault, but: We had extremely noisy neighbors
We are sorry you did not enjoy a more positive experience at our hotel, Connie. Please allow us to host a more pleasant experience for you. We will replace the mattress on the sofa bed. If at all possible, we are happy to intercede on a guest's behalf and ask others to be more considerate in the later hours of the evening.
I have found Best Westerns to be generally good for what I would call a budget accommodations. The one in Astoria was clean as it should be. The location is good. There is a path in back that goes along the river all the way into the town center that we enjoyed. A few negatives must be mentioned. First, the towels were bad...thin and small. It was actually hard to get completely dry with just one. Second the continental breakfast was pretty awful. The gentleman running things in the breakfast area was busy trying to keep up with the overcrowded room and very polite as he was dealing with numerous complaints from customers. My wife couldn't eat the oatmeal. I was afraid to try a sausage biscuit because the gravy looked like it had been there from the day before. I can't recommend this hotel.
396eda, we are always eager to hear valuable feedback from our guests. Thank you for the review of our friendly service and clean, comfortable rooms. I apologize for the condition of the towels. We have placed an order for additional linen and are waiting for delivery. We appreciate the patience of our guests as the breakfast host works to refill popular menu items. Please know that your stay is not typical of the usual experience guests have at our Best Western, and we hope you will return to enjoy a better stay so you can recommend us to friends and family.
The staff were all friendly and helpful from the minute we walked in the door. The breakfast was good and the room was clean and comfortable. Our only complaint would be that the hotel really could use to invest in some new towels as the towels we had were paper thin and seemed a bit over used. Otherwise, our experience at this hotel was awesome and we would stay here again (though we would hope they might have improved their bath towels).
5familytravelers45, Thank you for your positive feedback. We have placed an order for new linens and await their arrival. We are grateful for your patronage and invite you to the Best Western Astoria for another lovely experience.
We stayed at the BW in Astoria for two nights, March 25 and 26. We requested a dog friendly room, as we were traveling with our two German Shepherds. Our room was on the first floor at the end of the hall and near a door to a lawn area, which made walking the dogs simple and quick. Our room was very clean. The staff was extremely professional. The clerk was busy when we arrived, dealing with guests, the phone, and some minor logistics, but she was able to juggle all these tasks efficiently. Kudos to her! This property was located close to restaurants, gas stations, and scenic areas. We would stay at this hotel again.
Thank you for the excellent rating and kind review, Dagney. We are pleased you enjoyed the clean, comfortable room near the dog area. We appreciate your patience with our team member as she addressed many issues simultaneously. We hope you will return to enjoy many more lovely stays at the Best Western Columbia River Waterfront Hotel, Astoria.
The rooms are SO clean, the staff were very friendly and informative, the breakfast was excellent and the view was excellent and if you want to see and HEAR Sea Lions.. this is the place for you!! and there was a trolley outside the hotel to ride. FUN!!
Terin230, thank you for the wonderful review. We are glad you enjoyed the song of the sea lions and the trolley stop behind the hotel. We hope you will return to stay at the Best Western Columbia River Waterfront Hotel, Astoria, again soon.
Amazing location. Front desk service was very poor. Didn't acknowledge us right away. One of the gals at the desk had a very poor attitude. Not saying this because I feel entitled, but I stay at 25+ nights a year and we are supposed to get a couple waters when we check in. It was not acknowledged or done and I didn't want to go back down to get them and deal with the front desk again.
We sincerely apologize for not being aware that you are a member of the Best Western rewards program. When booking through a third-party site, this information is sometimes not communicated to our team. There is no excuse for our staff to be discourteous or to make our guests feel unwelcome. We will ensure that all our team members foster a welcoming atmosphere in the future. We hope you will return and enjoy a much better experience with us.
Well appointed suite with decent view- a plus that the windows open! Two beds, a couch and desk in spacious layout for our needs. Note that the sink area is in the room and the toilet/shower are separate room - great for travelers trying to get ready at the same time. There is quite a population of sea lions inhabiting the docks nearby, and they can be loud, but hotel thoughtfully provides ear plugs, if necessary. Breakfast had variety of cold and hot options and the eating area was clean. The hotel is right on the river path with trolley stop next to building, but alas, the trolley was not in operation during our visit and the river path was under construction in between hotel and maritime museum (but was clear to Pier 39). Look forwarding to enjoying this hotel later in the year!
It was lovely to host an awesome stay for you, LoveTravel598197. Thank you for sharing a great review of our comfortable room and convenient location. We are sorry the city is updating the trail behind the hotel leading to the museum. Our friendly staff can direct you to it through the area. Most guests love the sea lion's lullaby but understand that their conversations can get loud. We hope you will return to enjoy another spectacular stay at the Best Western in Astoria.
