"Nice Hotel but needs some TLC"
3225andyc, 01 Avril 2024

Friendly and helpful staff, good prices, decent menu, food was good with good sized portions, breakfast was well laid out and generous, good sized rooms with all the expected facilities. However the hotel is a bit 'tired' and is in need of a refurb in the rooms. The location is in the sticks, with quite narrow lanes to get to it but the views around the Hotel are fantastic.

"great stay"
N5104UGpauls, 29 Mars 2024

We had a wonderful long weekend stay there, staff were friendly, and the food was excellent and we really enjoyed our breakfast. The bedroom was a good size, well worth the drive, but don`t follow the sat nav as this takes you down a very narrow road, just follow the road past Haldon forest park.

"Enjoyable and relaxing break"
ronaldreed, 19 Mars 2024

A high quality, yet inexpensive hotel, with friendly staff, and a chef, providing high quality meals. My wife who suffers with gluten and onion allergies, was extremely delighted to encounter a high quality restaurant with a chef that went out of his way to provide meals that catered for her.

"Really really dog friendly"
sara m, 18 Mars 2024

Beautiful hotel that is a 5 mile drive from Exeter we used this as an overnight stop to Cornwall. I arranged late night check in which is a must if you are arriving late as this hotel doesn't not have 24 hour book in. Key card was found easily as there is no staff around Lovely 1 night stay in a dog friendly room, we had room 4 at the end of the corridor which was perfect for us as 1 of our spaniels barks at any noise. Fantastic breakfast I had the veggie full English and hubby had vegan full English - lots of choice with fruit, cereals and pastries. Beautiful grounds to walk the spaniels and they loved playing in the garden. My only grumble is the lead up to the hotel

"Amazing stay"
dizzys62, 03 Mars 2024

This hotel is so amazing. It is so quiet and the staff are all a big credit to the hotel. The food is amazing and the mad polish man on the reception made it all so amazing. It is clean and tidy. I worked nights and was left to sleep which is a big thank you. I will definitely be back and can't wait to stay here again.

"Hidden gem"
Freedom54849150941, 01 Mars 2024

We had a lovely stay at the hotel. The staff very friendly, nice quiet rural location, breakfast was great, the rooms were clean and bed was comfy, it was definitely good value for money. The only downside was that the driveway requires attention, but it didn't affect our stay, we will be returning for a mini break soon.

"Lovely rural stay"
50daffodil, 29 Février 2024

The position of the hotel is very rural but only 5 miles from Exeter Centre. The driveway needs serious attention as it is in a very poor condition. However the staff are all extremely helpful and friendly, cooked and continental breakfast is very good, bar menu is basic and dinner has limited choice. Sunday lunch was excellent. Our room was a fair size, clean and cosy. Some of the furnishings a bit tired. I describe it as comfortable and excellent value on the two for one offer.

"New friends"
X1667UDsarahs, 26 Février 2024

Had a really enjoyable stat at the Lord HaltdonmHotel in Devon. It is an incredibly dog friendly hotel but they welcomed our cat too. It is a great function/wedding venue and the grounds are lovely. The food was absolutely delicious and very reasonable.

"Lovely quiet location"
ruthyhicks, 19 Février 2024

Nice older property with modern rooms and facilities. We opted for an upgraded room and it was very spacious. One wall was a bit thin with next door(snoring!) but that may just be our room. Nice amenities in the room (pod coffer maker) and mini fridge.

"Excellent stay"
sedgy24, 18 Février 2024

Stayed for one night on route to our week in Newquay and what a gem of a hotel couldn't fault a thing, the cleanliness was spot on and the staff was so accommodating and welcoming highly recommend and will definitely be returning (Ps don't let the country roads to the hotel put you off it's worth the drive)

"A hidden gem"
billfinnimore, 28 Janvier 2024

This hotel is set in lovely surroundings in countryside but within east reach of Exeter. Excellent standard of service and quality catering. My wife and I have stayed on three occasions in the last five years. The staff are polite, efficient and helpful.

"Blissful"
JuliaG29, 27 Janvier 2024

Beautiful hotel set in gorgeous grounds. Warm, comfortable and sparkling clean room and bathroom. Cosy bar, pleasant restaurant. The staff are very friendly and helpful. The food is good and very fairly priced. The hotel rates were extremely reasonable and we even had complimentary breakfast thrown in, the breakfast menu is quite extensive and it was delicious. Would definitely stay here again when passing this way.

"Nice place poor customer service"
Amanda L, 24 Janvier 2024

Lovely building and grounds. Customer service needs improving as it tarnished our stay. Mix up on room we wanted due to poor communication. We were challenged at breakfast in front of other guests as to whether we had used the bed and towels in a room we were in for 5 mins before moving to a better room. Mix up on our bill at checkout. We were told we overpaid by £5. We said its fine leave as it is then in an email with an awful tone were challenged on this saying we owed then £5! Not a nice experience especially as we are returning guests.

"Excellent Service unforgettable stay"
Chris P, 11 Janvier 2024

The hotel provides excellent customer service accompanied by first class accommodation. You could not wish for a better stay at a unique hotel setting in beautiful countryside. The only hiccup was a minor discrepancy on the bill owing to an IT glitch however this was easily and pleasantly resolved by reception and management personnel. The staff are comprised of locals along with various other europeans and an antipodean assistant manager from the Oceania region. Furthermore the Argentinian maintenance man insisted on walking around the huge hotel checking the radiators. I would thoroughly recommend this hotel.

"Superb stay caring staff"
adeledrew_, 11 Décembre 2023

Lovely hotel had a warm welcome, very good restaurant, cosy bar and large bedrooms with comfortable beds. First time at this hotel booked for two nights but will stay longer next visit, staff can't do enough for you.

"An amazing location"
maryphilpott, 12 Septembre 2023

We spent 2 nights at the hotel predominately to attend The Open Day at my son's Horse Racing yard near Ashburton but also took the opportunity of meeting up with family & friends & even managed a swim in the sea at Teignmouth

"Lod Haldon nr Exeter"
Richard G, 12 Septembre 2023

Second time we have stayed here. Lovely relaxed atmosphere in beautiful surroundings with staff who have the perfect balance between under and over attentiveness. Room spacious and clean . Good choice on dinner menu Look forward to staying again

"Fantastic Room with a View"
SheepMagnet2011, 30 Août 2023

Just picked the best room available on our company system and that the description said King size bed with a view. Wow, what a room it was. Would like to say it's the perfect for couples on a romantic weekend for instance, but after a long day at work it was just as welcoming. Very comfortable and spacious and all that is required. Didn't try the food there unfortunately as up fairly late working and left before breakfast but nevertheless, I will be going for that in the future visits to Exeter. May take along the partner at some point for a break. View from either window was also spectacular. Sorry about the pics, taken after use :)

"Very basic - Ideal for 1 night stay, nothing more.. "
IdiiBhaxx, 13 Août 2023

1 Night Stay in Exeter I chose to stay at this hotel during my time in Exeter, I have stayed at several hotels and this was at a reasonable price for the weekend I was visiting. I did a quick google map search to see where exactly the hotel was located and it seemed fine within reason and close to the city centre. The reality was the very small and narrow roads proved very difficult for me and ended up scraping the bottom of my car on many occasions. If you drive a "saloon" vehicle I would not recommend this hotel as it is only accessible via country lanes and you will end up causing damage to your vehicle as I did. There are no road signs on the way up so please do take care driving, also network is very limited and poor the more you head into the "woods" ... The staff at the hotel were very friendly, quick to assist and direct where my room would be. The hotel and grounds itself is VERY dated and old, I like the look of the hotel from the outside and feeling of a private castle but it was basic and nothing special at all. I always ask at reception, if there is a double bed in the room and was told this would be the case but on entering the room this obviously was not. I headed back down to see if there were any double bed rooms available but was quick to be told no... So ended rearranging the room and putting the 2 beds together. The beds were very hard, thin walls hearing everyone walking past and a single corridor to go from / to the room. The bathroom was also very old school, giving a very 80/90's vibe... The breakfast was okay, nothing special and had the basics. I did not stay long and ended up getting some food in the city centre. There are plenty of other hotels in Exeter and think I will be staying elsewhere when I next return. I would give this a overall score of 2/10

"Really good"
Tony B, 11 Août 2023

Really well looked after. Staff are very good - nothing is a problem. Very courteous staff and dog friendly! The gentleman waiting on at breakfast was really welcoming when he saw our dogs - they even got a sausage off him.

"Lord Haldon Hotel"
RhSeasonedTraveller, 28 Juillet 2023

Just returned from a two night stay at the hotel. Although decor may appear dated it is in keeping with the history of the property. The views on a clear day are amazing and there is a formal lawn with plenty of tables and chairs to admire the view whilst enjoying a beverage from the bar. We stayed with our dog and there are good walks directly from the front of the hotel or the amazing forestry just a short drive. Also recommend Fish and chips from Finn's on Teignmouth seafront

"Nice surprise"
alanbush, 26 Juillet 2023

Stayed by chance at short notice. Way of the beaten track but only 5 miles from Exeter. Faded country house in lovely location. Public areas are very worn but my room 4 was reasonably up to date with decent bed tv and bathroom fittings. Food was reasonably good, particularly breakfast and the staff friendly. Happily stay again if not for the full price.

"Lovely grounds and very quiet location"
JGo181058, 19 Juillet 2023

Lovely shabby chic hotel that seems miles from anywhere, but within easy access of Exeter. All we could hear when sat in the beautiful garden was a couple of sheep bleating a few miles away. Lovely small bar area too.

"Paid for executive room given card for dirty room on arrival"
daddyno1mk, 17 Juillet 2023

On arrival to my honey moon given card to my room to walk in with my wife to dirty room with the beds been slept in and filthy rooms not a good start then when we wanted rooms cleaned they were not and had to go beg for coffee and biscuits as was not toped up nor was the toilet roll

"Lovely but expensive"
janeogier3, 08 Juillet 2023

Last minute booking for family reasons so not a lot of choice with 3 dogs. Very clean, rural quiet location; but we felt it was overpriced @ £15 per dog. Additionally, although it was our choice to opt for a family room with a premium cost of £122, we would normally expect this to include breakfast. We brought our own dog bedding, water bowls etc; so why did th3 charge of £45 for the dogs?

"So impressed!!"
N1098ENbethh, 22 Juin 2023

We booked this hotel not knowing what to expect. Upon arrival we were very surprised with how beautiful it is!! The room was very clean and spacious. Aswell as this the breakfast and dinner was lovely, accompanied with lovely servers. I would definitely love to revisit. The only thing I would say is that the road up to the hotel is rather slim and steep and about 20 mins from city centre!! Thankyou lord haldon for our lovely trip!

"Beautiful hotel amd great staff"
Emma B, 25 Mai 2023

Just want to say what a wonderful 4th visit and stay we've just had at this hotel The staff are amazing especially Maddie who was very customer focused for such a young girl The chef even did us our favourite pudding on our last night even though it wasent on the menu

"Value for money; warm welcome"
332hello, 20 Janvier 2023

This is in an idyllic part of Devon. The hotel is close to Exeter but in the heart of the countryside. The staff cannot be more helpful and the hotel has the basic comforts we need for short business stays. A warm welcome and a peaceful place to return to after a busy day.

"Relaxation"
patriciahemsley, 05 Janvier 2023

Only negative thing was the road into the hotel. Then it was lovely. Views fab. Hotel entrance welcoming Staff great. Very friendly and catered for our needs. Highly recommend. They sent detailed directions.

"A really nice place to get away from it all with good food and brilliant staff."
Andrew S, 31 Décembre 2022

It's really nice to get a chance to stay in a lovely old building and this certainly fits the description. It is also well out in the countryside, tucked away at the end of a long driveway. The rooms are perhaps a little austere and in need of an upgrade, but they are well equipped and extremely comfortable. The lounge and restaurant are superb, and the grounds are pleasant to walk around also. the food was excellent but, best of all, the staff were very friendly and absolutely brilliant. We definitely intend to return.

"Peaceful Location"
Paula R, 16 Décembre 2022

Don't be put off when your sat nav takes you down quiet, narrow country lanes because this is the way you will get to this unexpected gem of a hotel. Beautiful views, plenty of parking and pretty gardens to relax in. We booked a superior room and we were not disappointed. Well worth the upgrade for a large room with comfy seating area and views over the fields. Luxury bedding and huge bed. Dinner and breakfast very tasty and well presented. This is a small hotel which is very homely. Staff were friendly and helpful. No lift, but not many stairs. Would definitely return- we loved it.

"Lovely break"
TwizzleH, 10 Décembre 2022

Loved our two night break away. Lovely staff and we really enjoyed the afternoon tea and the three course dinner. We ordered breakfast in the room rather than go to the restaurant and it was ideal ! Beautiful location although hard to find… shame there were hardly any other guests too so I hope the hotel survives as we will be back

"Superb relaxing break"
kjcharnock, 06 Décembre 2022

Lovely hotel. Staff couldnt do enough. Lovely room and views that were breathtaking. Only slight note o point out is that the road to the hotel is very narrow and full of potholes. I am lucky as I have a 4x4 but I would imagine 2 wheel drive cars will suffer in the wetter/colder months.

"Lovely country house hotel with excellent service and food"
Odyssey134219, 28 Novembre 2022

A secluded hotel with lovely grounds yet only 15 minutes from Exeter-,the staff were all friendly and welcoming- we felt it was good value and excellent food and service our room was very clean with a fabulous view of the surrounding countryside- we will definitely stay here again

"One night stay"
karenrU509BC, 06 Novembre 2022

An enjoyable stay in a lovely setting with helpful friendly service. The bedroom was a good size with proper opening windows and a comfortable bed. The bathroom was large and well presented. The dining room was well set out , the service was attentive and friendly with food well presented and tasty.

"Great hotel with great views"
Richard L, 06 Novembre 2022

Lovely hotel to stay, food and bar good. Rooms nicely decorated Breakfast was first class even serving kippers which were excellent nice fresh eggs breakfast's cooked to order we also had an evening meal meal which was good, staff very friendly and helpful.

"Lovely setting"
Liz F, 01 Novembre 2022

The hotel is out in the countryside with lovely views. While some of the hotel needs a bit of TLC I had a lovely stay. Breakfast was really good with lots of options. The bathroom in my room was relatively new and great. This is an older building so has charming creaks and groans so be prepared for that. Would recommend if you wanted to stay in the countryside but also be only 15 mins away from Exeter city centre.

"3 *? Mediocre 2 * at best - staff are pretty much the only redeeming feature."
m281811, 24 Octobre 2022

The positives are minimal: The staff we encountered during a short stay were all very pleasant. The room and bathroom were kept clean and comfortable. The countryside surrounding the location is pretty and very quiet. But the negatives are plentiful: The driveway of the hotel is in a very bad state and full of potholes and very uneven. Unless you drive a 4x4 vehicle, there's a real possibility of damaging your car. The public areas are tired, dated and not at all welcoming. There is absolutely zero atmosphere in the hotel bar and the restaurant. The breakfast is ok, but not great. The hot drinks are produced by a vending machine, with no option for decaf coffee. The cereals are limited in choice, and are offered in large open bowls to serve from. Pastries are also not covered and no tongs to serve hygienically. There was a choice of just 1 flavour of yogurt in pots. The fresh fruit salad was very unappealing consisting of finely diced melon, melon, melon, a few grapes and apple. Fruit juices and milk dispensers were not refilled for guests wishing to have breakfast after 8.30am. Breakfast is served 7-9.30am only, and the large dining room that's sparsely occupied by the handful of guests is in complete silence ( no background music), with most people probably feeling quite conscious of speaking in anything louder than a whisper, so as not to be overheard. Orders were taken for a cooked breakfast. This was ok, reasonably cooked and hot. Dinner at the hotel was absolutely abysmal. Again, there was no atmosphere at all. All the room lights are on, so it's just very bright and stark with no effort to create mood lighting, candle on the tables or such like. We ordered a 3 course meal. The starters were ok, but not anything too exciting. The main course was really awful. It was described as “Lemon chicken” served with new potatoes and baby leeks. It was served in a bowl with no finesse at all. The leeks were in some kind of broth/sauce and looked grey and completely unappetising. There was a whole chicken breast fillet placed on top, and 6 small potatoes to the side . The chicken was very difficult to cut and tough. We were hoping that it would at least taste better than it looked, but this wasn't the case. It was poorly seasoned, and tasted of very little, let alone “lemon chicken”. We played it safe and finished with a sorbet for dessert which was fine. Our package included dinner, but we chose to eat elsewhere after the first night. We would not recommend this hotel, especially for staying on anything more than a b & b tariff. The hotel needs a lot of updating, and some serious consideration on how to create a welcoming and relaxing atmosphere that makes guests actually want to spend time there. The menu needs to be realistic and reflect the capabilities of the staff preparing dinners, as clearly the dishes that are described on the menu are not what the guest is expecting and is of very poor quality, and unappetising at best. I wish I could have given a much more favourable account of our stay, as the staff were all very pleasant. But I hope that the points I have raised may be considered by the management for making improvements, to make this hotel a much more appealing place to stay. It could be made into a wonderful venue given its location, and its once grand status.

"Over priced and over rated"
bryanpickles3, 21 Octobre 2022

The std room is completely overpriced and overrated for what you actually get. The online picture do not resemble the room in person. The bar and restaurant have little to no atmosphere, we had to leave to eat and drink somewhere else. A hotel should be a place where you want to be to relax, we did not want to be there any longer than we needed. We tried to fill our days with activities so that all we needed to do was sleep there.

"A lasting Experience"
Dennis G, 13 Octobre 2022

A very tranquil and relaxing location. The facilities and staff were exceptional. Our room was a nice comfortable size, with two easy chairs a large TV and the bathroom had a walk in shower and a bath that was BIG enough to have a swim in.There are nice walks adjoining the hotel, places of interest and beautiful coastal towns within easy reach.

"Perfect and peaceful"
becci44, 26 Septembre 2022

We stayed here for 1 night as a birthday gift. The staff were very welcoming on arrival. Our room was nice and clean, apart from a couple of cobwebs in the corners, and the bathroom was lovely. We had dinner and breakfast in the restaurant and the food was very good. It was a lovely, peaceful place to stay and we would definitely consider returning.

"Fantastic hotel can't rate highly enough"
alj3721, 19 Septembre 2022

The Lord Haldon as a hotel has lota of character with different breakout spaces to use. It suited us perfectly for our wedding venue. The staff couldn't be more helpful, friendly and professional. So if you're in the area and want to stay at a little known gem the Lord Haldon's for you.

"Truly dog friendly & value"
stevejG2880JD, 28 Août 2022

Enjoy restaurant meals in the lounge with your dog(s). From greeting, to great housekeeping and kitchens to reluctant departure this is a great experience in an older and pleasant rural hotel. They are clearly good at weddings, but outside this a great place to short break.

"Dont take room 8"
Sjoerd7622, 26 Août 2022

We stayed there for 2 nights. Overal it was very mediocre with the main redeeming point being the view of the countryside. The food just wasnt well prepared. For 21 pounds you get a basic burger with mushy fries and a burger with just a bun, a slice of tomato and a slice of raw onions (no sauce). Even Mcdonalds does that better. The chicken in the salad was chewy and the lasagne was lacking tomato. To be fair, the personell was nice and friendly. The room itself was ok however it was nothing like the pictures. Everything was old, the room was terrible noisy and you could literally hear what was on tv in the room next to you. The bathroom door sometimes wouldnt open requiring my girlfriend to open it from the outside. The shower was moldy, a typical dorm has less mold than this shower. In a final piece of irony the description of the ‘climate control' contained an explanation of how to turn the radiator up. Dont believe the pictures on the internet, believe the picture ive added. Taken just this morning.

"LUNCH!!"
1947E, 23 Août 2022

It my be a super place to stay, but don't make the mistake of booking lunch. I asked to reserve a nice table for 6 to celebrate my husband's birthday. When we arrived it was to find there were only sandwiches and ciabetta on the menu. Hardly the celebratory meal I had envisaged. I had not been notified of a reduced menu. When my husband spoke to the Receptionist, she suggested he might like to speak to the Manager, but the Manager was just about to leave in his car and didn't have the courtesy to even get out to speak to him. Needless to say we took our custom elsewhere.

"Amazing venue for writing"
ali123399, 23 Août 2022

I stayed here 4 times in 2021 to get some serious writing done. What a lovely hotel - so peaceful with amazing views. I felt myself decompressing even on the approach. I had one of the deluxe rooms with dual aspect which also had a fridge, proper coffee machine and the biggest bath I've ever seen. The staff were lovely, really helpful and friendly, and breakfast and dinner were great. I would definitely return if I needed to have either some focussed time away or just a complete rest.

"Lovely hotel in beautiful countryside"
Donna011974, 17 Août 2022

Had a lovely 2 night stay in this country hotel, beautiful surroundings and view. Staff were friendly and welcoming and very efficient. Breakfast was nice, with a good choice of both continental and cooked and dinner was lovely, with a good choice of menu and very well cooked and presented. Hotel was clean and room was comfortable, however very hot ( although was extremely hot outside) . Fan was provided but was little help!! Overall a very enjoyable stay.

"Hidden and beautiful location and views"
Countrygirl50-1, 15 Août 2022

You would not come across this hotel by chance ,however that is part of its charm .Very narrow lanes to access .Stunning views and lovely gardens. The hotel is old and to be honest is looking a little tired in the hallways and bedrooms ,although the lounge bar and restaurant areas are fine. Dinner menu was good and breakfast as well and indeed generous portions. Staff were helpful although one poor chap on the Sunday night we stayed (on route to the west country)was covering the bar and the restaurant although the place was not full. One small niggle .We could hear next doors TV through the wall in the morning,.so soundproofing may need to be improved but not sure if all rooms have this issue. The room rates were v good and ours included breakfast .Quoting "4 in a bed" Would we stay here again .YES!!

"One of the most peaceful locations I know."
WestCountryHawkeyes, 23 Juillet 2022

The site of what was once a stately home is really outstanding. One tip I would strongly make is to have a Sat-Nav to get there in the first place and then to find the best route when you come to leave.

"Excellent stay."
simoneO9695YE, 08 Juillet 2022

This is our second stay, ideal location for our needs. Good value. Staff welcoming and attentive. Rooms are pleasantly decorated and amenities all there. Views superb from hotel, very peaceful place. We will return.

"Wedding at the Lord Haldon"
lakehousesting, 01 Juin 2022

Thoroughly recommend this hotel for a wedding. Zoe, Paco and the staff are experts at what they do and are so helpful. Every aspect is covered, our day was truly brilliant and can't thank them enough.

"Lovely location, great staff, needs refurbishment"
379roberti, 01 Juin 2022

The first thing I noticed is how beautiful the hotel is in its countryside grounds. I was greeted by Zoe who was kind and professional throughout my stay and a credit to the hotel. A young blond gentleman whose name I didn't catch was great too. Very good service overall! There are interesting lounge areas with a grand piano. My room left a big to be desired sadly, with wallpaper coming off, cheap furniture and a saggy mattress. The TV remote batteries were flat. However the bathroom was super clean and modern with touch sensitive mirror lights and walk-in shower. I only stayed one night else I would have explored the lovely grounds In summary - super location, super staff, but the hotel would benefit from refurbishment.

"Top notch ,hits the heights."
Travellingtheturf, 03 Mai 2022

Easiest access is from the village of IDE .Beautiful views ; right off the beaten track so incredibly quiet. Good food choices at dinner and outstanding breakfast in morning with hot food cooked to order Perfectly placed for racegoers visiting Exeter or Newton Abbot, walkers on Dartmoor or to break the journey to Cornwall. Looking forward to returning.

"A delightful hotel"
billfinnimore, 30 Avril 2022

This is a must stay! Staff are lovely. Setting us beautiful - I am nit surprised you can have a wedding here. Well maintained grounds enhance the overall ambience. Excellent breakfast experience. Good value for money.

"Great family get together"
Anna O, 13 Avril 2022

We stayed for the weekend and it was absolutely lovely. The staff were really friendly and catered to our every need. The chef did us a special meal in a function room on the Saturday which everyone thoroughly enjoyed. The quality and portion size of the meals were great. Rooms were airy and spacious, thanks for a wonderful trip

"A wonderful setting, outstanding team, throughly recommended"
calonge78, 11 Avril 2022

Family reunion. Simply fantastic 2 night break from start to finish. Zoe the deputy manager handled the whole booking proving a professional service that was outstanding. The whole party sang the praises of all the team who looked after us so well. Chef produced quality meals especially for the private dinner we had on one night. The rooms were very spacious, nicely appointed, quality fittings with soft towels and robes. Great tea/coffee facilities with the added bonus of a tea pot (one up for the hotel) We couldn't fault this hotel and would return without any hesitation.

"Chill and relax stay"
Dcann84, 24 Mars 2022

Amazing hotel and staff! If your looking at getting away for a quiet stay with a partner this is the place to go, there's not much to do other than chill but that was the purpose for our visit so would highly recommend

"Not as good as previous stay"
Modigli, 15 Mars 2022

Return trip for birthday weekend. After an initial change of rooms, the accommodation was fine. However, the hotel was looking a bit 'dog-eared' in places, and in need of sprucing up. The staff were as friendly and helpful as ever, but the restaurant dinner menu was limited and pricey. Good breakfast, though!

"Listed building"
lindajhearne, 11 Mars 2022

Nice hotel, good size rooms, great staff and very good bar meals. Be aware that the 2 miles from main road is along narrow roads, often requiring a pull over to allow other cars to pass. The village gets grid locked. The listed building status means there are no lifts, we were on top floor and we are fine with stairs/luggage. Might be an idea to include porter Service if needed in info.

"Great place to stay if exploring Dartmoor"
DJH1975, 02 Mars 2022

A beautiful old building set in stunning countryside. The rooms were large and clean, staff friendly and helpful and the food very good. The location is perfect for exploring Dartmoor, my only gripe is owners need to fork out for an interior designer as interior look a bit old fashioned.

"Lord haldon hotel"
juliethornton500, 26 Février 2022

Beautiful views and lovely hotel with very spacious rooms and tasty breakfast with lots of choice. the gardens are are looking very nice also improvements are being made to the hotel which can only make it better

"Weekend getaway"
Michelle N, 02 Janvier 2022

We booked a couple of nights for the New Year as attending a local event. The hotel is a little gem tucked away near Haldon forest with access to some fantastic walks or shopping in Exeter. The staff were so friendly and attentive, we had dinner on both nights and enjoyed both meals. Our room was on the first floor and very spacious with views over the fields to Exeter. We will return.

"Clean massive family room"

Spacious clean lovely hotel only bad comment would be expensive breakfast but really lovely night stay. The location was remote and peaceful and so quiet which was what was needed. Place decorated beautifully for Xmas. Everyone very friendly

"Appalling"
onlyme22, 13 Décembre 2021

Well cancellation was until 1400 but payment was taken at 0832..on arrival I was put into only what can be described as a broom cupboard, sink in the bedroom not even in the bathroom. Told dinner was from 6.30 so booked a table at 7.30 only to be told there were 3 of the 4 specials had gone as they only had one piece of sole left from the night before so specials aren't even brought in fresh. Ended up having the Cod without batter..still not good. They don't take COVID-19 seriously as plastic table cloths have been on tables for several sittings and not changed, only a couple of quid to change, then comes the room and trying to sleep..every door slams from 10.00 to 3am..that also goes for the front door..no security on night shift so as I found out the woman next door was obviously carrying out her business in the room and giving the door access code to all her punters..who came and went till 4am waking everyone..NOT A HOTEL FOR CHILDREN IF THIS IS THE KIND OF CLIENTELE THEY HAVE. Then when mentioned to reception in the morning they didn't seem bothered so I take it that happens there a lot. Breakfast is all cheap produce and not good quality. The hotel is really dated and could do with a complete freshen up. Don't have a wide car..I got a brand new car..now got to have scratches polished out as lanes are very very narrow and lots of overhanging shrubbery.

"Lovely setting"
Julia D, 29 Novembre 2021

Country hotel in the middle of the country, with nice panoramic views. The roads leading up to it are very narrow, with few passing places! Very nice staff. We were on the third floor, and there didn't appear to be a lift, so that was quite hard going with our cases. All in all, I was very impressed with the place, and would stay there again.

"Peaceful and quiet "
acj00, 20 Novembre 2021

The hotel is in the middle of nowhere. But the surrounding countryside is beautiful. The village of Ide is the nearest place and has 2 pubs. The hotel - yes it's a little dated inside but the setting is lovely with outstanding countryside views in every direction. I was here for 3 nights. So peaceful and quiet. The room I stayed in was perfectly clean and comfortable. The breakfast is also excellent and for £10 extra a bargain. A special mention to Paco and Daniel who were both very attentive and nothing was too much trouble. Definitely will stay here again.

"Added value"
ladbrookannette, 18 Novembre 2021

Saw a stag & deer on arrival. A true country hotel with wonderful far reaching views. Lovely spacious clean room. Helpful friendly staff. Will return for longer stay & bring MTB to explore the forest.

"Very disappointed Previous customer"
935geoff, 11 Novembre 2021

Previous visits over the last 5 years were fine, but the hotel is looking very tired and in need of TLC. On checkout I was told that the prepayment I made was in total settlement of the bill but I pointed out that we had had a bottle of wine at dinner and that there should be £27 still to pay. The receptionist went to the restaurant to verify it and I paid the additional, other guests might not be as honest.

"Love it, love it, LOVE IT!"
elizabethbailey2020, 03 Novembre 2021

A wonderful hotel, very warm, welcoming and comfortable with excellent food and bar/lounge. A very beautiful building surrounded by idyllic Devon countryside. Definitely a hotel we can't wait to return to. There is so much to see and do all a short drive away (if you can tear yourself away). This is a 100% genuine opinion - I LOVED it here!

"Great food!"
sarahcV3133JZ, 26 Octobre 2021

Lovely location overlooking rolling hills. An impressive looking building from outside. Rather in need of refurbishment inside, particularly the dining room which was cavernous and bright. More intimate lighting and dividing the space into smaller areas would help create a cosier atmosphere. Luckily the food at dinner and at breakfast was very good!

"Great traditional rural hotel, staff are excellent"
Dexter2707, 12 Octobre 2021

Lovely hotel which is a bit of out of the way but at the same time close to everything! The hotel is nice, rooms are very spacious and clean. I must give a special mention to Zoe - first class customer service, extremely personable and a credit to the hotel 11/10

"Overnight Stay"
CliveandCaroline, 30 Septembre 2021

Hotel is in a great quiet location with fantastic views. Whilst it may be deemed to be in need to some upgrade it really is quirky and the staff, service and food is of great quality. Well done to all the team.

"Noisy, smelly, and unorganized "
deanica, 28 Septembre 2021

We were not informed that a wedding was being held at the venue, this meant that music was shaking the walls until midnight and sleep was impossible. This could have been avoided in at least 3 possible ways: 1) if someone is booking almost all your rooms for a wedding, just block the other rooms from being sold. 2) if you get greedy and want to sell those rooms, inform the customer in advance, and/or reduce the rates. 3) don't put non wedding guests in the part of the hotel overlooking the wedding/entertainment. I should add that we got a refund, though we had to initiate that. We decided to just book another hotel at 10pm, so ended up paying twice the usual rates for that. I will avoid this place and all Best Western hotels going forward.

"2 day golf break"
davidA657HA, 19 Septembre 2021

Stayed in a twin room, all in all very good value indeed. The breakfast which we paid for separate was well cooked but very small portions. The food in the evenings was execellent, Zoe looked after us and was superb. I would mention that the place looks tired and need a refurbishment. All in all great location great staff would visit again.

"Absolutely shocking"
AJDavies19, 17 Septembre 2021

Booked last minute for business. Turned up no notice of booking. Hotel is a time warp, guessing no updating or renovating since 1970. Allocated a room and once settled and getting changed for bed I had a man unlock the door and open into my room as he had also been given a key! No phone from the reception to apologise or check if I was ok. In the morning I discussed what had happened and was told it couldn't of happened because only one key. Luckily the couple who had unlocked my door and come into room were in reception to confirm my story. No compensation or otherwise. Heavily advise not to stay as very poor. Only good thing is the views for the car park!

"Beautiful location, large rooms and excellent food"
Bill S, 10 Septembre 2021

The hotel has gorgeous views from its front gardens and is located in a quiet and remote location (perfect for getting away from it all). Our room was large and clean (admittedly a little 'tired' particularly in terms of carpeting but nothing too remiss ) and the evening meals were outstanding (easily competing against top quality restaurants). Staff were friendly and helpful making it a welcoming stay. i would definitely recommend this hotel to friends. In terms of getting there I would recommend taking the route via the village of IDE as the default satnav route took us via a single-track road where the hedges brushed up against each side of the car and there were very few areas to pull over if you meet a car coming the other way. Not a route for the faint-hearted even if you are used to Devon roads being narrow. Overall an excellent hotel in a stunning location.

"Late lunch poor - afternoon tea great!"
KimM750, 10 Septembre 2021

Very nice afternoon tea with a group of friends. Friendly and efficient waitress and good food. Very relaxing environment where we weren't pushed out the door after our tea, in fact we had more tea to drink and left three hours after arriving! Much better than our off the chance visit two days prior to check the booking and have a late lunch - initially told sandwiches weren't available - then waiting staff told us they were. Then waiter forgot to take our order, but did after a reminder. Asked for brown/granary bread and received white. Had to ask for knife, fork and napkin to enable us to eat the salad with dressing accompanying the sandwich! Waiter very apologetic and explained he was 'the only one there' ! Was worried the treat I'd arranged for my friends two days later may not go to plan, but luckily (apart from the weather!) it did.

"Beautiful dog friendly location just outside Exeter"
debbiehick2021, 10 Septembre 2021

Lord Haddon is in a very peaceful and beautiful location just a few miles from Exeter. It's attraction for us was the proximity to Dartmoor and a course at the international renowned Academy of Floral Art and being pet friendly. The staff were brilliant, the accommodation good value and the cream tea delicious sitting overlooking the valley.

"Quintessential Afternoon Tea"
Nikki S, 05 Septembre 2021

Best Afternoon Tea EVER! - just home from a beautiful few hours in the grounds of this gorgeous Hotel. Sat in the afternoon sunshine overlooking the garden with the hills in the distance we were thrilled with the site of our 3 tier delights being carried across the lawn. Hand on hearts, both of us, said this was the best Afternoon Tea we have ever had. Sumptuous filled sandwiches, hand made cakes and the scones had a crisp outside that was delicious. As you can see from the photos, not a crumb was left behind. The friendly young waitress showed us a variety of places to enjoy our tea, luckily the weather was on our side and we plumped for outside. Definitely go again and highly recommend you all to try yourselves. You won't be disappointed.

"There won't be a second visit"
pwk111, 04 Septembre 2021

I know hoteliers are having a hard time of it but - just make it clear to your guests that they will be getting an inferior experience for the same money. don't treat you guest like idiots. we booked a nice country hotel - expecting at least a modest country hotel view for our 2 night stay. no such luck. ROOM 11 look at the photo I promise you that will sum up what you you will get for your money. The problem is a slick snazzy web site can do wonders for a business like this. If you do end up in that room (and there are 3 others like it apparently) and you want a full sink of hot water sink of hot water do it with plenty of time on your hands. ... anyway I was going to let all this go by the by but when no one had made up the room -which means a kettle but no coffee for the 2nd day etc I had had enough. I went to complain... amongst the "im sorry"s we had the "but....."s. I head how it was all the neighbours fault about the view and we should have said if we wanted our room made up and nothing that felt like a genuine apology. in fairness the manager offered to move us but at 7pm in the evening when we got back looking forward to a coffee, what was the point. if she wanted to really get the whole complaint thing over - I would suggest apologies like you mean it - don't make ANY excuses and just reduce the bill - no matter if its requested or not. I didn't ask for any refund because so often people complaint for a reduction - I didn't want to dilute my offer of feedback. we saw her (the manager) round the hotel as we sat having a drink in the garden but not one inch of eye contact... defiantly an impression of being miffed! The next morning she was on reception and raised the issue with me again and again seemed to want to be difficult... we thought you were going to leave last night after you complained... bit odd since she saw us having a drink I thought but I just asked her to drop it - it was a less than perfect stay in sorry to say. BEWARE. But to end on a good note the food was good!

Wander57498143788, 25 Août 2021

Went to a wedding. Paid £120 for one night in a so called Delux room. The carpet needed cleaning or replacing the plastic covered head board had burns on it. Our view was over a flat roof. Breakfast was a joke. under cooked very small and the toast was only cooked on one side. They seem to treat our wedding quests with contempt all in all disgusting

"Staycation in Devon 2021"
Cheryl R, 23 Août 2021

The hotel is in a beautiful location very rural with stunning views, the lawn in front of the hotel is lovely and a good place to enjoy sundowners. The building on the outside looks very tired and in need of TLC. Our room was very shabby, carpet was torn, bedhead was scuffed and part of the faux leather was missing as was the side of the bed. The Reception staff were not very friendly or welcoming, we had to ask a lot of questions because no information was forthcoming from them, e.g what time dinner was served, did we need to book a table, which way were our rooms etc. The hotel seemed short staffed, and those that were working gave us the impression they would rather not be there, I understand the last 12 - 18 months have been extremely difficult for hoteliers, but based on this experience we would not recommend this hotel.

"County Hotel with a view"
ozzi9, 23 Août 2021

A beautiful hotel in a stunning location . Adequate parking, courteous reception. No lift , but we were on the first floor and were told of this at booking . The rooms are a good size . We had a family room , and it was adequate for three. Clean . Fast WiFi . Resturant food was tasty , and breakfast buffet had a good range of choice including vegan and gluten free . The grounds and the location are the best part of the facilities .. beautiful ground and spectacular countryside

"Great service and food"
MKFinchie, 16 Août 2021

The staff were friendly and extremely efficient, especially the man who checked us in at reception and then also became our waiter for our evening meal. The food was good - we had an evening meal and breakfast. The hotel is set in the countryside above Exeter and has great views and it's own car park. It was quite tricky to get to as we went along single track roads although I think from the other direction it is a little better. The hotel decor was a little old fashioned but clean. Although we had an ensuite, the wash basin was in our bedroom, which wasn't ideal. It was also very hot at night despite the window being ajar and a fan being provided. Overall I'd recommend the hotel for short breaks.

"Lovely Lord Haldon"
lordlockhart, 14 Août 2021

Excellent staff, food and location. Room a bit tired, but clean with everything you would need in your room. Very dog friendly and accommodating for our needs. Fabulous location with stunning views and beautiful well keep grounds to wander in or sit and have a drink.

"A really nice dog friendly hotel"
tannadice6, 08 Août 2021

I stayed at this hotel as my friend who drove me had already booked to stay. A lovely hotel in a very beautiful quiet area. We had our dogs with us and they were very welcome with nice walks close by. A bit off the beaten track but so peaceful and quiet it was worth it

"Excellent Stay"
684Rachel, 28 Juillet 2021

Would highly recommend staying at the Best Western Lord Haldon Country 3* Hotel. The location is priceless if you like stunning views. A special thank you to Mary for all her help, advice and recommendations which made our 3 day stay even more special.

"Lovely hotel , well run and friendly hotel with great food"
craigsW6944ZC, 28 Juillet 2021

This hotel is in a stunning location with spectacular views of the countryside and only 20 minutes into central Exeter. The staff are friendly and food is excellent. You can eat in the restaurant, courtyard, or garden.

"Lovely afternoon tea"
652annu, 24 Juillet 2021

Visited with three others on Friday 23rd July lunchtime. Would highly recommend this venue for a wonderful afternoon tea. Lots of free parking. We ate outside as it was dry and sunny. Food was of a high standard. The quality of cakes, great tasting freshly baked scones served with some seasonal fruit garnishes was well worth it. Unlimited tea or coffee with service with a smile from the staff. Stunning uninterrupted countryside views were a bonus. We were not rushed either and I'd certainly visit again but would suggest using the slightly longer route via Ide as the route off the A38 took me through very narrow country lane to the hotel entrance.

"Motorbike trip to see Jack and Noddy"
Skiondown, 08 Juillet 2021

Proper Country Hotel. I stopped at the Nobody Inn for an Ale to get directions, (see review). Through the lanes, big car park and the aspect of the hotel is excellent. Check in easy and Covid compliant. Nice public rooms with high ceilings. Reasonable priced meals with salads, pasta and classics. I had Room 4.Very quiet night. Some people have said it's a bit frayed, but I liked it and the staff were very nice and polite. Good old styled Country Hotel.

"Staff work hard for guests at Lord Haldon"
stevejG2880JD, 04 Juillet 2021

Allowing for the hard times which are reflected in the decor. Its a bit tatty at edges but very clean, comfy and roomy. Very English and as older guests with pets we enjoyed a pleasant relaxing stay. An extended 4 generation family were there as well and like us seemed to feel the ambience and caring team made the stay great. Set in peaceful surroundings without an unannounced A road or other horrid let down just outside the photos. Planting is superb and small well kept grounds, and courtyard, are a pleasure to explore. Recommend dinner at least once or twice during your stay its super decent ingredients, well cooked and nicely presented. Service is excellent with every member of the team smiling and happy to be back at work, or learning under experienced supervision.

"Fantastic Food,Nice Staff, Great Place"
Marizete-DT, 26 Juin 2021

This hotel is located  in a beautiful peaceful area, in the middle of farm land. The food is absolutely delicious, highly quality, they use farm products, and prepared with a special taste. The staff are very efficient, and friendly. When we arrived in the evening, the nice lady at reception gave us a great welcome, the restaurant was nearly closed, but she waited for us to order our dinner, desserts and drinks. (pity can't remember her name). She was really lovely, and very attentive at all times. Zoe and Paco couldn't do enough. Our room had a beautiful view, and was spacious. The only negative aspect was the shower which worked very poorly, very little water pressure and the  temperature control did not work effectively making the temperature too hot. This was the ony unpleasant factor. Given the overall experience, I recommend this hotel, you will certainly be very

"Dated and poor quality food"
Traceydillon, 20 Juin 2021

The food was poor quality and expensive. Pubs often serve better quality peas, scampi and halloumi. Drink service was very slow and the range available was very poor. South west establishments should offer better gins, alcohol free and ciders. The views are beautiful but the building is very dated. I wouldn't return.

"Preferred hotel"
Rob_and_Ann_kids, 19 Juin 2021

I don't go down South on work so often these days but when I do, I do try to stay at this hotel, its in about the right place for a good rest before the long haul Northward back home. Its a blissfully peaceful and relaxing place in a lovely location. Rooms are spacious and nice and beds comfy, food reasonable. Room 11 was OK but a bit noisy in the morning, staff need to be aware in Summer people have windows open due to heat, early deliveries, try to keep it down guys! Had a simple but very tasty dinner of steak and Blue cheese salad, ideal for summer. Breakfast, credit to the lone waitress who was clearing, table setting, taking order, fetching food and covering reception! did great under a lot of pressure. Apparently it was a one off but surprised there wasn't another staff person who could have pitched in a bit. All in all, look forward to my next stopover.

"Tranquility Delivered"
John C, 17 Juin 2021

Needed a short break and hit on this gem. A charming retreat, with delightful rooms, excellent tasty food, the most helpful and friendly staff (thanks particularly to Tia) and all for excellent value. The journey for the lat few miles can be hair raising, with narrow single track twisting lanes, hairpin bends and traffic meeting you. Your sat nav will probably send you the most interesting way coming off the A38, , but coming off of the A30 should save your blood pressure! Thoroughly recommended.

"Stunning location and fabulous stay"
l33v1978, 06 Juin 2021

Very calm and relaxed atmosphere here. Staff very accommodating to ones needs. Room was clean fresh and stunning views. Hot shower...delightful smellies and yummy biscuits in room. A well noticed basket of extra coffees tea etc in reception a bonus. Only negative was a staff male not so cheery or helpful in reception. Lanes quite tight getting to Hotel with minimal passing places. Breakfast was great..good options and fresh. We enjoyed our stay.

"Wonderful afternoon tea"
colin and jenny b, 03 Juin 2021

My husband and I had afternoon tea in the beautiful, peaceful gardens of this hotel today. The views are stunning, the staff are so friendly, helpful and obliging and the tea was truly exceptional. Great selection of sandwiches with tasty pea shoot garnish, the BEST scones I think I've ever had with lashings of delicious clotted cream and jam and three other cakes each (we were given a box to take home the surplus) as much tea or coffee as we liked and all for £19 (Travelzoo voucher) unbelievable. Thank you so much, we'll definitely be back.

"Bang Average - Check Hot Water & Beer"
Scaramanga1972, 05 Décembre 2020

Bed comfy and room spacious. Breakfast warm and plentiful. Service good until had no hot water which never got fixed properly and bottled beers served out of date even after mentioning. Suggest improved signage to find hotel car park for people travelling in dark. Had booked for whole of December but have chosen to look elsewhere for future stats.

"Very nice hotel but spoilt by lack of hot water"
KevinB700, 05 Novembre 2020

Be careful if following sat nav - mine tried to take me down a rough track to a farmyard! Friendly staff at all times. I was upgraded to a lovely looking exec room. Sunday dinner was a superb roast beef meal, other meals also very nice. Breakfast fairly basic but ok. My stay was spoilt however by problems with lack of hot water which I reported on the first morning to no avail.. At times the cold tap water was warmer than the hot tap so I had 3 completely cold showers and one almost warm shower. It seemed the water was warmer later in the morning but by evening it was cold again (Note this is just in room 21 I believe) I used the hotel as a base for touring and exploring Dartmoor so it was in a good position for this

"Nice Room, Poor Hotel and Overall Experience."
DJord99, 16 Octobre 2020

We stayed in a Deluxe Room (Room 6). The room itself was fantastic, big TV, huge bathtub and walk in shower and very comfy bed. I would definitely recommend this room to anyone staying here. My partner and I stayed here for 3 nights as a “staycation”. Had a few walk trails in mind and wanted to get away from home. My partner and I both agree (as stated in a lot of reviews) that the hotel itself seems very outdated and in need of restoration. The staff as a whole were welcoming and friendly, except for the bloke we had checked in with who had very little to say or to offer in terms of helping. Our room was on the 1st floor, which involved walking up stairs and through a variety of doorways to reach our room. For a couple in their 20's, this wasn't so much of an issue, but I can definitely sympathise for the more elderly generation. One thing that immediately became apparent, is that not all “touch surfaces” were being cleaned frequently. I'm sure this was probably a mishap on the hotels behalf and possibly a one-off situation, but in the current pandemic, you can't be too careful and definitely would have put us at ease. The breakfast was included in the price, but I will say that we only took breakfast for 1 of 3 days of our stay as we were quite disappointed with the breakfast. Lacking in quantity of food and overall wasn't a pleasant experience. We skipped breakfast the second day and found a lovely little breakfast place in Exeter on the final day, called “Brody's Breakfast Bistro”. Would definitely recommend this place, especially if you have a big appetite. We were also woken up on numerous occasions in the middle of the night/morning throughout the duration of our stay by the dogs that were staying in the next room over from us. This of course isn't the hotels fault and is definitely something that should've been addressed by the owners of the dogs. My partner and I have dogs, and have no issues with them. But when paying for one of the top rooms in the hotel, you would definitely be slightly agitated if you was woken up throughout the evening by dogs barking, especially with the walls being so thin, it sounds like they're in the room with you. A few “gotchas” for you: - Bring some additional soap, shampoo etc. The hotel provide a couple of tiny bottles of subpar products. I ended up driving to the nearest supermarket and buying some products, which was a real shame. - Definitely take other reviewers advise and try to take the route via Ide village. - If you get a chance, try out the Huntsman Inn Pub in Ide. One of the nicest pubs I've visited in a long time. - Try and visit Canonteign Falls if you're looking for a great walking spot. £8(something) per adult for a great experience. Overall, good trip, beautiful sights and views, lovely room (as I would've expected for the price), but definitely some bits that need addressing in the hotel. I wouldn't return here out of choice.

"Lovely stay, lovely staff"
seleeyore, 25 Septembre 2020

Off the beaten track down narrow lanes so lovely and quiet. Long walk up hill to reception from the carpark so if you have breathing problems can be tricky. Friendly staff, comfy bed, great breakfast didn't have dinner

"Punches Below It's Weight"
Stevo2009, 18 Septembre 2020

Stayed here for a couple of days hiking on Dartmoor taking advantage of Best Western's 3 Nights for the price of Two deal. The Lord Haldon is located in the small village of Dunchideock, 3 or 4 miles Southwest of Exeter; driving there down some of the narrow country lanes in the area can be quite an experience. There is a good size guest car park, with an electric vehicle charging point. The Lord Haldon is a country house style hotel which may be a good or bad thing depending on your point of view. The layout is quirky, with a jumble of interconnecting rooms on the ground floor, narrow staircases and corridors with random steps. There is no lift, so anyone with limited mobility may find getting to their room hard work. The whole place looks a bit tired – plenty of evidence of faded carpets, cracked plaster, poorly fitting doors etc. On the other hand, the location is glorious, on a hill with a splendid view east, and when the weather is good there are places to sit outside, both in the hotel garden and in a courtyard just outside the restaurant. The hotel is dog friendly, but they won't be allowed in the main restaurant (but can join you in the bar). My room was decent sized, with double bed, wardrobe, desk, television and hospitality tray with kettle, although it suffered the same tired décor as the public areas. Wi-Fi, as you would expect, is available in-room free of charge. The en-suite was also good sized, containing a bath tub with a splendid overhead shower. There is no air conditioning; fortunately, the location away from the city and any major roads means it's quiet outside, and I was able to leave my window open to let some cool air in. Obviously the big deal at the moment is Covid. Reception is behind a screen. I asked about mask etiquette when I checked in, and was told that the hotel 'recommended' guests wore masks in public areas except when eating or drinking. Other guests generally seemed to comply. At present, rooms will not be made up during your stay, although you can top up with coffee, tea, sugar etc from the reception area. The hotel like guests to book a breakfast 'time slot', ideally the previous day, presumably so they can manage social distancing. On the subject of breakfast, although my online booking stated this would be delivered to my room, it turned out that this was out of date information and it was in fact being served in the restaurant. The breakfast experience was the most disappointing aspect of my stay. On my first morning I had to double check I'd come to the right place because the restaurant was basically an empty room furnished with nothing more than several unlaid tables. At the Lord Haldon you can expect table service, with absolutely everything brought in from the kitchen. Not a single thing is left on display for the guests to help themselves to. Obviously the hotel need to consider current regulations, but I've stayed in several other hotels recently where the restaurants were actually set up to retain the look and feel of restaurants including a limited element of self service where breakfast items could be offered hygienically. I ate the cooked breakfast which was fine in itself, but portions were rather modest, and the toast was underdone to the point of being little more than warm bread. Lest this seems unfair, I do appreciate we live in difficult times. Given the special deal I booked I was happy I got good value, and since I didn't spend a massive amount of time on the premises I wasn't overly bothered by the décor or furnishing. I do think, though, that given it's location, with a bit of a facelift and a return to some sort of normality it could be a far more attractive proposition.

"A friendly hotel serving good food"
tjbk2016, 13 Septembre 2020

Although tucked away down country lanes, the hotel is well located for visting Exeter and the surrounding coast and countryside. The staff were friendly and worked hard to make our stay enjoyable. We were there for a week and the food was excellent throughout.

"Lovely Hotel and Grounds for Dog Owners"
aaronw825, 09 Septembre 2020

Although a bit of a chore to find this hotel is a Gem, the moment we arrived we were made welcome and even better our dog was also made welcome. The only place our dog wasn't allowed was the restaurant although you can eat with your dog in the bar. The staff were lovely and made a fuss of our dog and even gave him his own bacon sandwich for breakfast a must if you are in the Exeter area

"Clean"
TravellingSolo_11, 07 Septembre 2020

Very clean hotel In quiet location Very narrow roads to the hotel Music played in the bar until 11, so a bit noisy until then Food average - not very tasty Good service Room and bathroom very clean Nice grounds

"Hard to find but worth it"
JackNIan, 25 Août 2020

A nice setting with lovely grounds. Very COVID 19 aware. We had a good size room with a good sleep quality bed. Excellent breakfast served in the restaurant (not plated to the room as per web site). Somewhat hard to find due to the location deep in the Haldon Hills and very little signage to point the way.

"Incredible, would highly recommend."
849zoev, 14 Août 2020

The room was incredible - for a family room (which are normally tiny) it felt really spacious and the beds were very comfortable, very clean throughout. The bathroom was big, roomy and spotless. Very peaceful area, tiny little back roads lead to the hotel with great views. Staff were very helpful and kind, we were made to feel very welcome. I would highly recommend. It was incredibly hot and a fan was provided in the room. They were on limited staff due to Covid, we had breakfast there for both mornings and it would have been nice to see some variety on the breakfast menu - although we did ask for something 'off menu' and it was provided with no issue. We pay, on average, £110 per night for a family room in most hotels, this cost us £136 for two nights! Brilliant price, very beautiful setting, would highly recommend.

"Couldn't have been better"
petebK7215CC, 13 Août 2020

Our travel plans to Cornwall had to be changed at short notice. We booked online through Best Western's Rewards scheme as soon on it was announced that hotels would be opening but after first having a very helpful conversation with the manager by phone. We were made welcome on our arrival one week later and our room was comfortable with a great view. There weren't many guests staying and understandably the level of staffing was low but we were looked after very well, lacked for nothing and breakfast was good. I'd have no hesitation staying here again, hopefully in more normal circumstances but well done to the staff for looking after their guests.

"Good place to stop off on way to Cornwall"
Horlic, 08 Août 2020

2nd year we have stayed here on our way down to Cornwall. It's in the middle of nowhere (altho less than 10 mins from motorway) and a lovey place to relax. Staff warm and welcoming, rooms clean and spacious, and plenty of room to sit outside in the grounds and eat. Also dog friendly and our dog seemed very happy here too!

"Great hotel, quiet location and tranquil setting"
CSharm210, 08 Août 2020

Stayed here few days towards end of July with my other staff, have stayed before and would always come back! Staff are great, very helpful and welcoming, especially Nicola and Paco! Food was great and service smooth, out room was lovely and had a great view of the harvest field! Few country lanes before you get there but it's all part of the adventure! Will defo be back again! Charlotte and Martin

"Nice hotel, but dated"
TRAVELPRO_8, 04 Août 2020

Extremely understaffed (only 1 staff member in entire hotel at one stage) Very isolated but with nice nearby restaurants (10 mins drive away) Breakfast wast very expensive at £13 per person and very basic. If ours wasn't included in a deal, I would have been very upset. Friendly staff, when you could catch someone! A bit dated and very much like a care home and lots of noise from courtyard if your room overlooks. No Aircon, but a fan is available. You can't get to the hotel if your car is bigger than 2m

"Very good hotel"
dragosgavril10, 09 Avril 2020

Nice, quite and clean room . Countryside hotel, lovely outside view. Very helpful stuff(Carmela ,Paco and Tony) Car park Lovely food Grate value for money I would strongly recommend I will go back for sure

"Great hotel still serving food to guests"
alby5566, 08 Avril 2020

As a worker being sent to different sites and staying in hotels- most are room only in these times- the guys here are still serving a proper breakfast and dinner in the evening- great food at the start and finish of a busy day and a comfortable bed at night in pleasant surroundings and friendly staff who are more than willing to go out of their way to help ! Ideal - I will be back.

"Spring break"
Ken M, 23 Mars 2020

Short break at what turned out to be a lovely hotel. Given the current situation the staff went out of their way to make us welcome whilst ensuring the highest standards of social distancing and cleanliness. We have nothing but praise for them. We will certainly visit again when things get back to normal.

"Out of the way but lovely"
Kormeleon, 03 Mars 2020

Whether it's just my satnav but this place takes some finding. I ended up in variously a farmyard, a holiday park and a deadended bridleway before I managed to track it down. The hotel is excellent and in a beautiful spot. The staff are uniformly lovely and they even have a splendid local beer on the bar. Downsides, the fancy TV offers Netflix and Amazon Prime but the internet isn't powerful enough to stream so they're inaccessible. Dinner in the restaurant was edible but forgettable. On the upside you get breakfast cooked to order rather than a buffet.

"Needs sprucing up a bit"
V6014WEchristine, 26 Février 2020

Very friendly and welcoming staff. We didn't have breakfast or dinner at the hotel as we were visiting family so can't comment on that. Seemed clean and the room was clean and tidy but very plain and old fashioned, needs updating. No hairdryer that I found so take your own. Basic and comfortable but not worth the price.

"Amazing Vegan Food, Comfortable Rooms"
katieWCornwall, 07 Février 2020

I've stayed here for 10 nights over the last 2 months. The vegan food is incredible. There are 4 vegan options on the standard menu, but each lunch and dinner I've also been offered a special, I've had vegan moussaka, asparagus risotto, and ravioli. There is great variety and a couple of very talented chefs. The staff are helpful, and the rooms are very comfortable. I've enjoyed walking locally, from the hotel and at the nearby woods.

"Competition Winner"
Rochbarrett27, 21 Janvier 2020

I was lucky enough to win a two night break at the Lord Haldon. It is situated in the middle of nowhere, which was just perfect for escaping the January Blues. We arrived on Sunday just in time for Sunday lunch which was excellent, lovely hot food and a great choice of vegetables, not the usual carrots and peas that seem standard with lots of Sunday roasts. After settling in to our room with the most stunning views across the countryside, we went out to explore, just beautiful. If you are looking for a little break away where it is so quiet and peaceful, this is just perfect. All the staff were excellent and so helpful. I asked for a slightly smaller pillow and it was waiting for me when I got back to my room. Both myself and my husband had a wonderful two days here. Thank you so much Best Western, we have stayed in a few when we were in the USA and this was by far much nicer.

"Lovely hotel, staff very helpful"
Redlottie3, 02 Janvier 2020

We stayed here for 1 night the day after new year. A lovely hotel, clean and comfortable and the staff were really helpful. The food was lovely if a little over priced for the breakfast particularly if you only want a light breakfast Would thoroughly recommend.

"Christmas room 6 "
682lucyk, 26 Décembre 2019

Staff could nt of been more polite and helpful Our room (6 )was huge and perfectly clean , great views across Devon countryside with fruit & brownies waiting in our room alongside a fully stacked tea & coffee tray a lovely touch . breakfast was tasty, with good choice of fresh fruit , cereal, juices toast and a cooked choices, fruit juices and tea & coffee ,I can recommend the haddock & poached eggs ! Menu wasn't exciting but well presented food of high quality and tasty , our Scottie dogs were allowed in to the hotel bar and rooms and we were all made to feel welcome this is a dog friendly hotel with good walks close by This hotel is in a good location , quiet ,15 mins from motorways and close to Exeter ,beaches and the moors , a great base for exploring South Devon Many thanks to the team for working hard over the festive period in giving us the perfect stay we can't wait to return

"Lovely country house hotel with history and DOG FRIENDLY"
JWK00, 08 Décembre 2019

Enjoyed our stay in the Lord Haldon, large comfortable rooms, DOG FRIENDLY, lovely staff and great food. You have to like narrow roads on the approaches but it's only for the last couple of miles. About 5 miles outside of Exeter city.

"Could be first-class"
301lisa33, 07 Décembre 2019

This hotel is located 'in the middle of nowhere', yet quite accessible... if you know the route. Google didn't help! (Maybe they could provide some advice.) Fabulous views. This is a lovely place and could easily be truly first class. Our 'smaller' room was plenty big-enough; the bed very comfortable; drinks-making facilities in the room. Love the little drinks shelf in the bath. :-) The communal areas are pleasant, although the restaurant is a little impersonal. The hotel guide doesn't inform about basic things like the times of dinner and breakfast. The grounds are pleasant, although quite small. The physical facilities here are mostly excellent Food at both dinner and breakfast was fine. Many items were delicious. However service was eccentric if not poor - being asked the same things by 3 different staff; offered items too late; served items not ordered; failure to deliver requested items; failure to make appropriate charges; being offered desserts from a 'nicer' menu offered for mains and so on. There seemed to be enough staff around: a bit of staff training and systems-establishment might help and turn this into a truly first-class establishment. The 'faults' we experienced could all be very easily sorted

"Fantastic hotel in beautiful location"
SamIacobello, 28 Novembre 2019

A lovely place and great visit. The bed was so comfortable and a lovely continental breakfast. Such a beautiful location too, well worth a visit and even better come and stay! The room facilities were also really nice, all very clean and lots of towels warming on the radiator when we arrived. Lovely stay, excellent!

"Felt like a first class client"
165celiaw, 26 Novembre 2019

A lovely hotel, pleasant bar and excellent food - even a fabulous sunrise! This was a treat for me, added to a necessary trip to Exeter, and greatly improved my journey. Lovely and quiet since hotel is at the top of a hill in the country with lovely view from my room.

"Fab hotel!!"
Hollie D, 19 Novembre 2019

All the staff were incredible! We planned our wedding reception at the hotel and all my family commented on how lovely and super helpful all the staff were. Lovely food! All round incredible day and the hotel rooms were top notch!

"Stunning views, Peaceful location, Good food and Lovely hotel."
Annelillie, 18 Novembre 2019

Spent two nights at the Lord Haldon Country Hotel. Arrived late afternoon and did need assistance from the sat nav to find it as it is down country lanes but found once the journey had been there was no problem finding it again. The setting is stunning and very peaceful. Very friendly welcome at reception and we were checked in very quickly. Our room was large, warm, clean and perfectly adequate for our needs. Very comfortable bed and great welcome tray. We dined on the first evening and have to say the fish pie and chicken curry were well presented and delicious and very reasonably priced. The team were attentive and friendly, nothing was too much trouble. Cannot comment on breakfast. My only negative comment is the dining area and bar were somewhat sterile and lacking in atmosphere. I would certainly return to this charming and unpretentious hotel.

"Short break"
Pete H, 15 Novembre 2019

We travelled to this hotel for a short break. The location can be a little tricky to find as the roads / lanes are very narrow. Once you find the hotel the hotel has plenty of car parking spaces and spectacular views of the fields. The hotel is very quiet and the staff are very friendly and helpful. Our room was very spacious and over looked the views of the fields. Breakfast was plentiful and locally sourced - excellent. A hotel to put on your list of places to visit.

"Peaceful hotel ."
sharonnewportgwent, 09 Novembre 2019

We stayed here just one night , after visiting Exeter races .The hotel is clean cosy and althougn a little bit dated has some charm about it .It is clean the room we had was fine , big enough and with a lovely bathroom. Our view wasnt the best but we arrived in the dark and left after breakfast so didnt really affect our stay. We had dinner at the hotel which was very good with plenty of choice on the menu. Breakfast was excellent . The road leading to the hotel is quite narrow and dark but its in the middle of the countryside so its to be expected If you're going to the races its an ideal place to stay as its about 15 mins drive.

"Superb"
GrahamCarey, 22 Octobre 2019

Beautiful hotel in fantastic surroundings. The reception staff are extremely friendly and helpful as are all the staff I had the pleasure of meeting. Food was very nice and the rooms were clean and comfortable and with plenty of sockets. Ans something that Ithat really made my stay was there were electric sockets by the bed - result. Only negative is the WiFi in my room (20), was terrible. That bad I couldn't do any work.

"Wedding"
Babsy1956, 20 Octobre 2019

We came for a family wedding, we were greeted by a lovely girl on reception who booked us in very quick & efficiently. Our room was very large with amazing views of the surrounding countryside. Through our weekend stay (2 nights) all the staff were polite, friendly and went above and beyond to cater for all our requests. We dined in the restaurant and the 2 staff couldn't have been more friendly. You have to remember it is a very old building so no lifts, narrow staircases ( not steep) no downstairs rooms, apart from that it is a hotel worth visiting. Downside.... the road to it is a bit unkept so beware off some holes! Apart from that fabulous place to stay.

"Lack of investment and surly service from two members of staff"
JUAbing, 15 Octobre 2019

We certainly didn't find the ‘hidden gem' described in previous reviews. We were greeted by a ripped leather sofa in the lobby on arrival and the underinvestment in the property was a theme throughout our stay. The heat was broken the whole three days, the carpet in the hallways looks 20 years old and grubby, and the furniture in our room from another era (not in a good way.) The front desk staff and some of the waiters were lovely. So helpful and welcoming but they were let down by poor service from two long serving waiters who were inattentive and rude. When we reserved our room the online restaurant menu was appealing but when we got there the menu had been changed to a more limited more pub grub style menu. The chefs did cater to our friend's allergies and produced some very nice food for us but that was only through special ordering and not what was on the menu. I would expect some locally sourced Devon produce to be offered on the menu but there was nothing like that at all. So lovely staff, let down by underinvestment and some underperforming colleagues.

"Quiet in the country...superb"
Johnfrisbee, 04 Octobre 2019

A 1-night stop here to break up a long journey...what a find! Taking time and care to drive around 7mins along single lane roads, the open garden and huge tarmaced car park awaited. As did a friendly welcome, Rewards points/gift offerred without my asking. Excellent deluxe room, with comfy bed, sofa, huge bathroom with large bath, walk-in shower and twin washbasins. Everything immaculate, spotless. Large dinner menu with specials. I chose soup, coq-au-vin and a naughty pudding. Excellent friendly service, spacious dining room and fantastic value for money at £25 for the 3 couses - a guest rate. Breakfast was excellent too. Overall, the Lord Haldon looked like it had undergone a majour refurb recently? Everything clean. All staff wonderfull. Idyllic location. Peace, peace, peace. So, I'm looking forward to returning in the Spring for a short break. The sheltered courtyard and patio seating areas look o-so tempting. And the garden - really, they have a gardener looking after it for only one day a week? - was a real treat, and so colourful for the time of year. There are 2 tiny steps up as you enter the reception area, and some flights of stairs inside. Location is excellent, so peaceful. What a good night's sleep I had. Well worth the few miutes' drive off the A38.

"Great stay"
louisespurway, 26 Septembre 2019

Excellent stay would highly recommend to anyone lovely hotel . We attended a wedding which was lovely , staff great , rooms very good We will visit again for sure We were made to feel very Welcome ....

"Dog friendly"
car0landray, 22 Septembre 2019

We chose this hotel as it was dog friendly. The room was far better than we had expected, considering it was one of the six dog friendly rooms. The staff were great and the food excellent, particularly the breakfast. We stayed on a Sunday night and the room rate was very competative. The only negative was that the room was too hot.

"Short break stopover"
Ian M, 21 Septembre 2019

My wife and I stayed at this property on our way to Cornwall for a short break. The hotel is located to the south west of Exeter by around 5.5 miles. After a winding countryside journey, the single lane driveway to the hotel could do with a bit of attention, beware the bumps and potholes? On arrival, the vista opens up with glorious views to the east towards Clapham (Devon) and beyond. Reception staff were extremely welcoming and our check-in was very swift and thorough. All bedrooms are located on the 1st or 2nd floors accessed by a steep and narrow stairway. Please note there is no lift. We felt that our dinner, bed and breakfast deal was very good value for money. The food was good, service excellent, all staff very friendly and helpful and our stay was extremely enjoyable.

"Fab view disappointing food"
roo1959, 20 Septembre 2019

Great location but very average food at above average prices. I don't complain when eating it never ends well. But far below standard of my experiences with other BW's. Also beautiful grounds and views spoilt by litter and empty glasses that had been there for sometime

"Great short break in a lovely rural setting"
John H, 12 Septembre 2019

The staff at the hotel were very pleasant, efficient and helpful. The food was very good and well presented. The room was very clean and comfortable and there were lots of public areas to sit and relax, which were also very clean. A special mention must be made of the gardener who kept the grounds looking really nice and full of interest.

"Lovely food"
BirdyG52, 08 Septembre 2019

There is lots to like about this hotel. The members of staff were all very pleasant and helpful and the food at breakfast and dinner was excellent, large portions, beautifully cooked and piping hot. Option of smoked haddock or kippers for breakfast as well as a good buffet and the usual cooked breakfasts. Good sized, well-equipped rooms, plenty of storage space. The minus points: there were times when there didn't seem to be enough staff on duty; rooms hadn't always been serviced by 3.30pm, we sometimes had to go and find staff to serve at the bar or in the restaurant. There is no lift, so lots of stairs to the top floor. The roads approaching the hotel are very narrow and the hotel drive badly needs resurfacing, but once you get to the hotel, there is plenty of parking and beautiful views over the valley. Some areas of the hotel are in need of redecoration, but overall, we really enjoyed our stay, largely due to the staff and the food.

"Hidden Gem of a Hotel"
fariamike, 06 Septembre 2019

I stayed at the Lord Haldon as it was a stone's throw from Exeter Racecourse and I was attending a corporate event there the next day. The Lord Haldon is located off the beaten track. My Sat nav took me off the A38 and via some really narrow single track roads. if your sat nav takes you this way don't worry your on the right track, just stay with it! There is a better Bus route, ever so slightly longer but a better route. The Hotel itself is very well appointed, they have a massive car park, so if you are arriving by car then theres no issue with finding a space. The restaurant and bar looked a little dated but were fully functional and the food was very good as we did stay for a evening meal and breakfast so I am happy to report that the food is very good. Staff are very friendly and helpful and I had no issue finding help/support when needed. The room I stayed in was well appointed had a good en-suite and there were even biscuits available too which is always a good sign! I would definitely stay again if I was in the area although it was a bit of a trek. It can be easily missed for some of the bigger chains who may be easier to locate but if you fancy a boutique hotel then the Lord Haldon is worth seeking out.

"Countryside hotel with great views"
Rosemary G, 02 Septembre 2019

Hotel is in the countryside reached by a very narrow in places country road but well worth the journey when you arrive and see the beautiful views. The staff are all very friendly and helpful and make your visit very enjoyable. The room we had was well furnished and very comfortable and the shower room was lovely. The food was wonderful.

"Very comfortable experience"
Geoff C, 01 Septembre 2019

Spectacular building. Comfortable rooms. Good breakfast, Pleased to find a cask ale available in bar s=although a little pricey. I knew it was a country hotel but I du=id feel a bit wary about driving on the single track approach roads . We had a good deal to stay, but I doubt I would pay the advertised room rate and breakfast

"Countryside Hotel"
Paul_D_Hill, 28 Août 2019

This hotel is in the middle of the beautiful Devon countryside along very country roads. The staff were great, very attentive and polite. The rooms are a very nice size, with the bathrooms being so big it's a waste of space. The bed was very comfy. The rooms are a little dated, but very clean and well maintained. The views are amazing. The bar food is standard but is nicely done. The only downside is there is no AC, and only a small fan in the room. If staying in the height of summer it might be a little uncomfortable.

"Wedding"
daphnej2014, 11 Août 2019

We attended a wedding here and could not have been anywhere better. The views are stunning, the peace and tranquility is awesome and the venue was perfect. The function room was spotless and well decorated. The staff were polite, courteous and could not have been more helpful. Food was good, breakfast excellent. Our executive room had spectacular views over the garden on one side and fields to the front which we woke up to with early morning sunshine. The bathroom was clean and a good size shower. The bed was quite firm not the best for me but my husband slept like a log. Wouldn't stop us staying again though. Some bits look a bit tired but they are in the process of upgrading all the hotel. Highly recommend as a tranquil stay. All in all we had a fantastic time.

"Lovely setting in the Devon countryside"
Go753694, 11 Août 2019

Nice old country hotel. Could do with a little TLC, especially the corridors, but nice service, comfortable rooms and good breakfasts. Beautiful grounds and view. Dog friendly areas in the bars and a lovely courtyard in good weather.

"Lovely Hotel"
keannahole, 06 Août 2019

We booked this hotel as it was close to Haldon Forest, which we booked for a go ape experience. The check in was very quick and easy, and we got given room 26. It was a lovely refurbished room with a stunning view over the hills. The bathroom was modern, clean and fresh with clean towels. The blind in our bathroom was broken and the shower wasn't that powerful but that didn't bother us. The food was okay. We had eaten a big lunch so didn't have much for tea. I had scampi. Breakfast was also lovely, fresh orange, apple and grapefruit juice and lots of cereals and pastries. Cooked breakfast was very filling and we didn't feel hungry until about 3pm. The grounds are stunning, we arrived in the afternoon so we took a walk up to the castle but you can drive which I recommend as it's a long way to walk! Staff very friendly!

"Okay hotel but expensive for what it is"
robr201, 03 Août 2019

It's in a really nice setting and the staff were very friendly and helpful, but... We are nearly always looking for hotels that are dog-friendly and in this area the options are fairly limited so we did not have many choices. We were made to have an “Executive” room because we had three dogs, and pay an additional £50, making it £210 for one night B&B. Considering the slightly dilapidated state of the place and the Best Western brand image, that felt quite expensive. For comparison we recently paid a similar rate at Boringdon Hall - a 5* Elizabethan mansion the other side of Dartmoor. That included full use of a state-of-the-art spa facility and their package to include a 3 course dinner felt much more competitive.

"Excellent"
liberty5556, 28 Juillet 2019

Could not fault this hotel! Very welcoming staff, excellent bright clean room and fantastic food. The gardens are beautiful. Great value and well worth the drive to get there. Would definitely stay again.

"Lack of Attention to Detail"
Daydream11455309574, 02 Juillet 2019

Overall, my wife and I enjoyed our stay. Wonderful location and view, good food and comfortable room. The experience was spoiled, however, by failure to provide items advertised as included in the prepaid room rate. Although relatively small things (bathrobes and a free local gift) this lack of attention gave an impression of not caring. A shame really as otherwise we loved the hotel and would certainly stay there again.

"Wedding party"
hic-et-procul, 26 Juin 2019

Two night stay for party following earlier wedding. Welcoming and helpful staff. Excellent cooked breakfasts; fresh ingredients (nice rasher of bacon, egg, mushroom, black pudding) freshly cooked. Very good meal for party, again well-prepared and well-presented fresh food. Stayed in small but comfortable room, with en-suite bathroom and shower. The views are wonderful across the south Devon countryside. The hotel is tucked away behind Dunchideock, along single-track lanes.

"A hidden gem of a hotel"
Paul G, 23 Juin 2019

We spent two nights here at a family wedding, staff were excellent ( Friday evening staff Caroline and Nicola are a true asset to the hotel). Restaurant was very professional and the food served to a high standard. Room was comfortable and we liked the hotel layout, the grounds and views are wonderful. It was a good choice and we would be happy to return..

"Not easy to find but worth the effort"
martinheydon, 22 Juin 2019

Wonerful views and walks, very peaceful and relaxing.. All staff were very helpful polite and courteous, great looking hotel, ideal for long walks or visiting Exeter and surrounding area . Great food in both restaurant or bar area, good options at breakfast

"Cannot get better... Amazing "
Angie197438, 07 Juin 2019

I booked a room for my mum's 70th birthday. Firstly they arranged chocolates for the room with a gorgeous card saying happy birthday. The room was amazing with views of the country. The staff were absolutely brilliant, so much so I will be writing to their head office to say what an experience my mum had. To say the staff went above and beyond is an understatement. Thank you so much for being so helpful and polite and making my mum's birthday a memorable day. I would recommend the haldon any say... The rooms are immaculate, the staff are fantastic, if anyone wants a memorable stay, I cannot recommend the haldon enough.... P. S the afternoon tea is out of this world.....

"Nice but faded"
Ballihoo, 05 Juin 2019

First impression is a well kept rather nice country hotel. Lovely location tidy grounds and good parking. Reception is ok if a bit dull. Reception staff first class. Our room was fine as was the bathroom in an old country house way. The bar is a bit grim and the dining room shows a tight budget. Only one table was beautifully laid for display all others bare and basic. Staff were great and our food was good with generous portions. Breakfast also pretty good. We will return but would love to see it spruced up a bit. This hotel is ripe for a makeover but keep the very pleasant multitasking staff.

"Lovely Hotel - friendly and helpful staff "
LVJ2612, 31 Mai 2019

The hotel is in a lovely location, with stunning views but it is in the middle of nowhere with narrow, windy roads to get there! And don't be surprised if your sat nav takes you down some single track lanes to get there! We arrived at 8.45pm due to traffic delays and were advised that the kitchen closed at 8.45! However, the gentleman on reception ran to the kitchen and asked the chef if he would do some food for us and we were really pleased he said yes. We just ordered a sandwich and chips, but it was so well presented and was delicious. We were grateful they kept the kitchen open for us as we didn't fancy going out to find somewhere to eat. All of the members of staff we dealt with were so helpful and friendly, but especially the gentleman on reception in the evening and the lady behind the bar. We had a family room (one adult and one child) which had a double and single bed. The bedroom was really spacious and the bathroom was huge! It was clean and tidy. Breakfast was also delicious, and it was nice to have it cooked fresh instead of it being from a buffet. We stayed here to break up our journey on the way down to Cornwall and I can't fault it in any way.

"Idyllic location"
BoltonMusicman, 30 Mai 2019

Needed a peaceful break of our journey down to beautiful Devon. It was ideally situated in beautiful countryside. What more can I say......I would return. The staff were excellent and the breakfast perfectly

"Peacefully remote. "
Johnthewhit, 28 Mai 2019

Very small roads in to this hotel so beware, at times they are just one car width, with not many passing places. However once at the hotel it is set in very nice grounds with lovely countryside views, quiet and peaceful. Check in was good, our room was clean and spacious, if a little dated in terms of decor and bathroom fittings etc, not scruffy though. The staff were very nice and attentive, although the guy on breakfast duty seemed a little off. Breakfast was good. I had an IPA from the bar in the evening and it was not good, I guess the turnover is slow, so this makes it difficult to keep a good pint, if management are not prepared to sacrifice what goes off in the cask. We had a very nice stay.

"Bit of a let down"
Mike E, 27 Mai 2019

Daughters wedding at this hotel, Groom's dessert left till last, after asking several times, vegetarian option came with asparagus wrapped in bacon !, beer in the bar was off, had several complaints about the beer, should of run some off before serving, otherwise the rest was ok.

"Worth the awkward drive in."
PETER W, 18 Mai 2019

Very difficult lanes with bad potholes on most approaches to this hotel. Take it slow and be patient and alert and you will be rewarded. Probably not a good base for touring out from. Hotel is old but well equipped with good facilities and in a beautiful, peaceful setting. Staff all very friendly, welcoming and helpful. Room spacious and comfortable. Breakfast (full English) very good with mainly locally sourced produce.

"Not for Faint Hearted .."
Resort53181472459, 16 Mai 2019

Very nice hotel, but be warned of the very narrow roads to get there, more information on this would be helpful, and the correct sat nav post code ! Dinner is very nice , drinks expensive but allways woild be

"Comfort In The Sticks"
brunoplaskow, 30 Avril 2019

Nice building and grounds in very quiet and isolated location. Friendly and helpful staff and a nice clean room. Bar was crisp and smart and quite bijoux in size. Ate dinner on my one night stay and the starter was terrific (calamari, but looked more like chicken poppers). Really tender and tempura style batter. Crisp & light. Main course was tasty, but more like school dinners. Fortunately the kitchen redeemed itself at breakfast with very tasty creamy scrambled eggs, although toast served was white rather than the brown requested. The room was comfortable with a good sized bath with overhead waterfall shower, although a little surprising to have the sink vanity unit in the bedroom rather than the bathroom. Clearly the building itself is a conversion from another use (previously a manor house?) as bedroom sound proofing from adjoining rooms and the corridor was not great. Overall a comfortable stay, but a bit our in the sticks, particularly if you need to be near the centre of the city.

"A great romantic and luxury experience near Exeter"
HelenaWashington, 28 Avril 2019

A beautiful, comfortable hotel with that touch of extra amenities and in a simply beautiful countryside setting. We all found our first (and final) impressions were first class accommodation, with particularly wonderfully helpful staff who made our stay totally memorable. Food first class, with a wide choice (especially at breakfast), so planning to return later this year. We came to stay here because of breaking the long journey to Lands End, and are so pleased we did. If you wish to take your dog, this is an ideal hotel, and very safe for walking dogs too. Suitable for family, friends, solo or also holding a party or wedding. It is advisable to take a map, or ask reception to send you a suggested route to help with finding the road with best access. It would be helpful if you were driving down Devonshire roads at night. Reception

"Weekend away"
Terry M, 23 Avril 2019

Great place to stay for the weekend. Within reasonable distance of some good leisure activities. Staff are very helpful especially the manager. Food is very good and the BB & evening meal package is good value for money.

"Great family room"
GlobeTrotting363744, 22 Avril 2019

Spacious family room was comfortable and good value. Breakfast was good and plentiful. Outside spaces beautiful and great for an early evening drink with great views of the countryside. The evening meal was a strange hit and miss experience with the overstretched staff trying to keep control of mistakes from the kitchen.

"Shhh!"
156andye, 21 Avril 2019

A lovely relaxing place in the middle of beautiful countryside. Classed as 3 star but the staff make more like 5. The staff are exemplary and some of most welcoming ever. The hotel is very well and recently decorated. The rooms are well appointed. The restaurant is good and everything appears to be made fresh - even the custard! If you are planning to visit this hotel only approach through Ide. To do otherwise risks the paintwork of your car.

"Stunning location, amazing staff"
SouthCoastBrit, 20 Avril 2019

Stayed here with my daughter and her dog. We chose the hotel pirely because it is near Exeter and accepts dogs. We were not prepared for the stunning location even though the country lanes to reach it are interesting. The hotel nestles in its own little piece of paradise. From the moment we checked in, complete with a very large 10 month old Retriever puppy, nothing was too much trouble for the staff. We had booked a dog friendly twin room which was plenty big enough for the three of us. Everything was spotlessly clean and the beds were comfy. This is a three star hotel, so do not expect The Ritz, but the service could not be bettered, even in The Ritz. For breakfast, they allowed us to eat in the lounge and take the dog in with us, a big plus point for us. We ate from the buffet and didn't order anything cooked so cannot comment, but the array of items in the cold buffet could not have been bettered, the tea was good and toast arrived promptly with the tea without having to be ordered. If you have a dog, look no further for somewhere to stay unless you really want a boutique hotel where they are precious about the decor and put customer service second. Bear in mind though that there are no ground floor rooms.

"Back in time"
Companion24570790714, 18 Avril 2019

We used to stay hear back in the sixities for a family holiday . Been coming back over the last couple of years to reminisce . Meet up with the owners back in the 60s Pam and Ron . Hotel is in a pretty setting , rooms have been done up too a high standard , food ( ate in the restaurant in the evening) very good , staff helpful and welcoming . Nothing to fault . Access is by narrow lane . Enjoyed the stay with Jeanette and Ian ( no good horse tips . Be going back

"Lovely hotel in stunning location."
Go769005, 13 Avril 2019

A lovely relaxing stay at this wonderful hotel in a stunning location. Nothing was too much trouble for any of the staff. My room was spacious and comfortable and dinner was delicious and great value. Can't wait to return.

"Such a Charming Hotel in the middle of nowhere"
ReigateBigdaddy, 22 Février 2019

Having read some of the previous reviews, we were a little nervous about living in the middle of the countryside when visiting the Uni for our daughter......how wrong could we be!! The major issue is: accept it for what it is.......talk of it possibly being a 5* Hotel if they spend money on it is pointless; it's a 3* Hotel that does what it says on the tin, and that is provide wonderfully old-fashioned service in the most beautiful of areas and that's why I've given it 5*s. Steven (and later Sophie) on reception could not do enough for the 3 of us and our two dogs. We were set up in the lounge for dinner and breakfast in a lovely window table, so that the dogs could be with us and we were not the only ones given this privilege. Colin andAnthony were deliciously old-school with their service and the wonderfully wacky Caroline made our dinner-time.......the food was outstanding (thanks Chef!!) with plenty of choices on both nights. Everyone had a smile on their face.....including the young girl servicing the rooms and the gardeners pottering about on the beautiful estate. Visit this place and enjoy the p and q that it provides in the rat-race, just be aware of the fact that it does need a little money spent on it (but not too much that it stops the likes of us bringing the dogs!!) and check out before booking that the restaurant is still serving at the time you will arrive!! Handy hint one.......we booked B and B with another site, but the Hotel would have matched that price and minuses 5% if I'd phoned? Handy hint two......they offer an upgrade to Dinner with the B and B for £25 per head with no restrictions on choice (even steaks) for a 3 course meal and that is an amazing deal!! Enjoy

"Business Hotel stay"
andyhughes2017, 01 Février 2019

Was there during recent snow - so setting was beautiful but getting out to Exeter was a challenge Lovely staff but many could not get in including the chef!! However the staff coped very well and even with a reduced menu kept us going Room 1 was near the front door but a pleasant and refurbished room and bathroom Nothing was too much trouble Did give me Best western benefits but never mind plenty of parking ! Needs a bit of investment in dining room in particular

"Beautiful location for an overnight stop"
T0ad, 23 Janvier 2019

The hotel is ideally situated for an overnight stop if you're travelling on the A30 or A38 - it's about 15 minutes off route. Location is beautiful. I arrived in the dark and entered via a side entrance and ended up in the bar area rather than reception. Reception staff were friendly when I finally found reception! Last orders for dinner on a Saturday night is 20:45. Luckily I made it just in time! Bar area is a bit corporate and not very cosy. Dinner was good - I just had a salad. My room was quite small and corporate but it had everything I needed. Bathroom was clean but could do with a refurb. Breakfast was good. I couldn't get on to the wifi but reception did try to assist by calling their support team. The whole hotel is in need of updating but for £31.85 including breakfast this was a bargain.

"Lovely peaceful setting on the edge of Dartmoor"
Tina F, 22 Janvier 2019

Off the beaten track but only around 5 miles from Exeter with its fantastic shopping and cathedral. Lovely walks on Dartmoor and Dawlish Warren - even in January really enjoyed the area. Hotel was quiet and comfortable and the food was really excellent.

"Lovely retreat"
RebeccaR192, 19 Janvier 2019

This is a tucked away, friendly little retreat which, with a little thought and investment could easily be five stars. As it is, this three star best western hotel is dog friendly and superbly situated for a country break. Friendly welcome and accommodating staff (radiator wasn't working in our room so a move was facilitated seamlessly by Steve). Reviewing ahead of breakfast and check out but if dinner was anything to go by it will be superb !

"New Year's eve"
Cheryl C, 06 Janvier 2019

The hotel is hidden down a very tight lane but when you arrive you are guaranteed a warm welcome. We stayed over two nights of New Year's Eve, lovely lady from watford seemed to be the only member of staff around but she was super efficient and friendly even though she was working new years Eve, THE FOOD was fantastic and cooked to perfection. Sadly as we had had such a early start we did not make midnight but to be honest the bar was very very quiet. Our room was lovely excellent country views and so quiet would recommend this hotel for a short quiet break.

"Family & friends gathering mutiple rooms"
bspur123, 21 Décembre 2018

Location superb and much easier to find via the road from Ide. We booked multiple rooms, had a private dinner and stayed for a 2 nights long weekend following a funeral. The staff were very helpful and went out of their way to make the event run smoothly and a good time was head by all!! The venue has character and was perfect for us with different room requirements for various guests.

"Excellent service"
Littlejackhorner, 16 Décembre 2018

We had a small family gathering here and the service was superb. The manager looked after us and made sure we had everything we needed and made excellent food suggestions. We will be visiting again soon and have already put some potential dates in the diary.

"Lovely location and good quality"
Mariecb76, 30 Novembre 2018

I'd recommend this hotel. We stayed for one night for a Christmas shopping weekend. My sat nav took me to a farm b&b using the postcode, then a holiday park that also had the work Haldon in it so make sure you select the hotel name as well (especially if you're driving in the dark like I was). Check in was very quick, staff friendly and the room was very comfortable and decorated beautifully. The only thing we could fault was the breakfast service. The food was of great quality but it took quite a while before our order was taken. We ordered toast which never arrived and had to be re-requested (we weren't the only tab;e that happened to). The breakfast staff were lovely and very polite but do need to be a bit more on the ball.I'd definitely stay here again and perhaps for a longer break so we could get full use of the views, it's in a very beautiful location.

"Great location"
Safari587776, 25 Novembre 2018

If your looking for a bit of quiet this is an amazing place. Beautiful grounds. When I stayed it was really quiet. The staff and the food were great and very helpful. I had a rally late check in and they were very accommodating The rooms are large but a bit dated.

"Super staff, dog friendly"
markgreen283, 18 Novembre 2018

Nothing was too much trouble for the staff for my stay with my dog. Set up dinner for me in the bar and breakfast in the lounge. Pre-warned me of wedding reception both before booking and by email explaining all public areas would be useable etc.

"Highly recommended"
Kathy G, 15 Novembre 2018

Friendly and helpful Staff and excellent tasty food, with a fantastic varied menu, compliments to the Chef. The Hotel is set in a secluded stunning location, with no road noise and is lovely and clean with comfy beds. I would highly recommend this Hotel to all

"Enjoyable Two Days"

"Hotel pretty good, location excellent - shame about restaurant opening hours"
haywarddavidjames, 29 Septembre 2018

Last night, shortly after we arrived, I was ready to write a terrible 1 star review of this hotel. However in fairness the hotel itself is really pretty good, the staff are helpful and friendly and on balance I think the 3 star rating is fair given the problem we had getting food once we arrived. Our room was spacious and comfortable however the shower wasn't up to much, a little weak! There was a great big TV in the room and generally we had everything we needed. However the hotels location is fairly remote (which is exactly what we were looking for, not a complaint) and after a long drive we were looking forward to some hot food. We arrived just before 9pm only to discover that the restaurant closes at 9pm and last orders were 8:45pm. No matter - we can just order room service. However unlike any other large hotel I've ever stayed in, there were absolutely no hot food options available 24/7. The only options were cold sandwiches - no soup, not even a bowl of chips let alone pizzas or burgers or other simple things. Nothing, no other options. Now this is a large hotel, on a Friday night in a remote location as previously mentioned. There are no other options and despite calling Dominos and begging them they wouldn't come and deliver here. I should probably also mention that my wife is pregnant and needed hot food! On top of that we'd been in the car for many hours and as a result, I had to get back into the car and complete the 40min round trip to the nearest Dominos so that my pregnant wife could eat something - despite the fact we'd booked into a hotel which we believed would have all the facilities we needed. This isn't a travel lodge or premier inn etc and given the beautiful rural location right on the gateway to the south west, they hotel must know that many of their guests will arrive fairly late? Anyone traveling from north or Birmingham or East of Reading leaving after work on a Friday simply isn't going to arrive in time for dinner! So whilst the staff were very friendly and the room was very nice and the breakfast (which was hot!) was also very good - I can't in good consciousness rate any higher than three stars. They completely failed in their responsibility to provide a comfortable stay. I see that there are many reviews mentioning narrow lanes and country lanes. Yes - however this is Devon and it's in a beautiful location... that's what you get. As it happens, the roads are not narrow at all, single track yes but we drive a large car and there is plenty of room, you're not dragging your wing mirrors along bushes. There are plenty of passing spaces and good visibility. The roads in both directions (yes I had to use both!) are absolutely fine.

"Cool, Quiet Relaxing stay away from the usual town hotels"
Lee_family_219053, 26 Septembre 2018

We were not prepared for the long drive to reach the hotel through the small and narrow paths. At some point we wonder if we were on the correct route to the hotel or the GPS did not register the correct address. What was worse we were coming in in the dark of the night around 9pm. Once we arrived at the hotel we were greeted by a very friendly front desk staff who was expecting us and we chatted for a very long while as she had been to and worked in Asia. Once we got into the room on the top floor it was so big with a Queen and 2 singles that we could each have our own space and the toilet was big with a very high ceiling. In the morning one side of the room overlooks the hotel main entrance and the other the back door to the hotel. The hotel has a bar, restaurant, a big premise with a very homely feel. The drive out the same dark narrow route we took the night before was so much more pleasant in the day and we appreciate the remoteness as the fresh air and pleasant countryside ambience makes us want to stay longer. I'm sure we will be back and this will be our home away from home.

"Wedding guest"
UkHammers, 10 Septembre 2018

We stayed here as it was the venue for our friends wedding. We had a family room that overlooked the courtyard. The room it's self was modern and large with enough room for the extra bed. There was not air conditioning in the room so we had to have the window open. The wedding was nice and the food was nice. Our 2 issues with the hotel was we have a 5 year old and as you can imagine he was tired about 9pm so I took him to bed. The wedding reception over looked the courtyard and some of the guests used the courtyard to talk, therefore when we went to bed our room was overlooking the same courtyard and we could therefore hear the music blaring with the windows open and clearly hear people talking, only option was to close the window. This did make the room very warm. Friends had one of the back room as said there was quieter. It would have been nice if the hotel had considered this and put the families with the younger children at the back. Breakfast the next morning wasn't great, the milk was off, It was changed quickly when we mentioned it. The fruit salad looked days old too. Shame really.

"Lovely room, excellent location & views"
Anouska662, 02 Septembre 2018

I've stayed here many times & love the remoteness of this hotel. We stayed in an executive room with views to the countryside. Room was clean, bed was comfortable. Staff are friendly. We stayed dinner, bed & breakfast & the food was slightly lacking this time. I ordered sea bass with mash. It came in a bowl with more butter than mash. Disappointing, as when I stayed many times between September & March, the food was always excellent. Nevertheless, we will be back & the price is stillgood value for money.

"Lovely views of Devon"
Tony W, 01 Septembre 2018

Zoe was very helpful when trying to find a room, managed to get move things around to squeeze me in! Spectacular view of the Devon countryside, most rooms will have a very good view but the one out the front looks the furthest. Back rooms may see more trees. The room was nice; a bit of shabby chic going on whether intended or unintended. Standard tea and coffee facilities, kettle doesn't take too long to boil unlike most hotel rooms I've stayed in! The bed was okay, comfortable enough despite all the unnecessary extra pillows, throws and sheets that are used in the hotel industry nowadays and probably still need to be cleaned as part of the turn down by housekeeping! ;) It was good to stay for one night as a guest to a wedding reception, but I'd be happy as a tourist to stay 3 or 4 nights as a base for visiting parts of Devon and Cornwall.

"Fabulous family get together."
Judy1066, 31 Août 2018

We stayed here for a family party. The hotel is set in beautiful gardens and is approached down winding country roads which are narrow in places. Reception staff were very polite and helpful, our room was comfortable and well equipped, although others had coffee machines while we had a kettle. Our room was on the third floor and there are no lifts, so if you have trouble with stairs you should request a ground floor room. We had a very good night's sleep. Breakfast was delicious, although the staff were reluctant to let us wait for our family before ordering, we were told the chef found it easier to produce a couple of cooked breakfasts at a time. Other than this though we had a wonderful stay and will be highly likely to stay there again.

"Perfect wedding venue"
Shona F, 27 Août 2018

My daughter got married here yesterday. Beautiful hotel set in a gorgeous location. Friendly helpful staff and great food too. We had an executive room which was massive and bed was very comfortable. We did have a few issues with the wedding room, however the staff were quick to sort it out. Thank u all for making my daughter's day special

"Difficult drive to the destination."
pgrwrx, 23 Août 2018

The hotel is in the middle of the countryside down single car lanes with nowhere to move. Signage is lacking at the lane entrance if you are coming from Exeter. Nearly missed turnoff. Lane is seriously potholed and needs work. Large carpark which again needs signage to direct you to reception which is on far side of building. Reception lady was very pleasant snd had us booked in quickly. She was also helpful with PC issue I had. Rooms are quaint and tidy however the floors squeak badly and are very annoying. Otherwise ok. Had dinner in restaurant. Ordered the Linguine which was ok though the chicken was pressed not off the bone and swimming in the cream sauce. Big serve but lacked something. Breakfast was plentiful but staff need to clean crumbs off tables before resetting them. Our table had fine shards of glass on it which needed to be removed. Wait staff in the evening was very pleasant young lsdy. Helpful but not intrusive.

"Birthday Celebrations "
graham n, 19 Août 2018

Wow, what a location, you need to google the history of this place. We both had a very nice overnight stay at the Lord Haldon Hotel. We found the staff to be very friendly and accommodating. The room we had was in need of an update but the bed was very comfortable and the room was clean. This is an old historic building with lovely garden. The breakfast was plentiful and tasty. Well worth booking this Hotel for a big occasion. Nice large, safe car park. Gra and sandy.

"Good but..."
HermenegildoZegna, 18 Août 2018

The Hotel is nice but the problem is the staff, more training is obviously needed. A more friendly welcome in reception, less gruff in the restaurant in the mornings and more attention to detail by housekeeping staff, for example, I had to ask 3 times for the room services tray to be moved the day after it was used.

"Hard to find"
StephBB1210, 10 Août 2018

My second business visit here and my thoughts are exactly the same as last time. A nightmare to find, amazing location, OK room, and a decent meal. Breakfast was a bit rushed so it wouldn't be fair to comment. Poor WiFi Would love to return for a social visit

"Excellent hotel"
jaycee1971, 25 Juillet 2018

This is our first visit. At first glance the hotel looks a little tired from the outside but appears to be undergoing some tasteful refurbishment. We had a superior room which was clean and tidy although we needed a fan that was readily provided by the hotel in view of the heat. The food is excellent and I must say the staff are very friendly and helpful. There is an extensive wine list which is reasonably priced including wine by the glass. If you return to the hotel early one day I would recommend a cream tea which was very good with fresh baked scones and cream. This hotel appears to be a popular wedding venue so may be noisy at weekends. Another word of warning is that it is off the beaten track amongst a host of single track roads which are not sat navy friendly. Best approach is via the village of Ide near Exeter and then on to Dunchideock when the hotel is signposted on a left turn.

"A mid week break"
patfaille, 17 Juillet 2018

Indifference by reception on arrival. Rooms spotless and food excellent. Just as well as driving elsewhere would have been difficult. The road was potholed and narrow. External facilities dreadful. I use a stick for mobility. Disabled ramp with holes, all external seating unsteady due to age and worn paint. They need replacement. I echo others comments on lack of signage. I had to request a fan. Really not a restful break at all.

"Bit of mixed bag"
Modigli, 13 Juillet 2018

We stayed here for an impromptu 'couple of nights away' on the 'Breakfast On Us' deal. When we saw the prices for the evening meal, we made other arrangements!! The setting of the Hotel is very rural, nice and quiet, the staff helpful and friendly and the breakfast excellent, but the road into the hotel is, in my opinion, a disgrace. It might not be the hotel's responsibility (it runs on past the hotel) but I don't see why the hotel cannot at least fill in the worst of the potholes.

"Could have great potential, but......"
pasdechatUK, 09 Juillet 2018

The Best Western Lord Halden Hotel is an opportunity lost. Lack of signs when trying to find it in a maze of country lanes, is straight away a big minus. When you eventually locate it, it is set high up in attractive grounds with gorgeous views. The rooms are pleasant, but desperately need air conditioning. Stayed at the start of the heatwave and had to ask for a fan as the room was so hot. What it must have been like in the peak of the heat does not bear thinking about. Air conditioning is taken as given these days. A shock to find none. Why on earth has a lift not been installed? The several flights of stair were steep and narrow and we saw an elderly couple request assistance, but told no porter. Another guest helped! Serious lack of staff. On the first morning, an assistant manager was waiting tables, and only one chef was cooking. But, the full English was worth the wait. All locally sourced food. The best part of the stay. Cleanliness was another problem. The room was dusty, and not vacuumed until I requested it. Fluff by the bed betrayed its lack of cleaning. Also, the drip tray under the milk dispenser in the breakfast buffet had dried milk spills that were there for two days. Evening meal were poor. Soggy fish and overcooked chips. Very large portions, but that did not compensate for dreadful cooking. Complained, and had the main course removed from bill. Desserts really good. Excellent Sticky Toffee Pudding. Strange. This review is done to try to show that a hotel that has great potential to be a really good country house hotel, is being completely let down. Booked it because it was a Best Western, and have always found the chain good value, but this needs serious reorganising to exploit it's considerable charms. I hope it gets the attention it demands.

"Basic Hotel, lovely location, good value"
Terry H, 09 Juillet 2018

This was an impromptu stopover for a couple of nights. We picked the hotel due to the price on Hotels.com. We had to change rooms due to a fault with the toilet but the friendly staff gave us a bigger room with a lovely view. Our first night was a Sunday and the hotel was very quiet but despite this the service was friendly and good. We had a meal in the restaurant on the first evening and the home made chicken pie was delicious. For hotel prices it was quite reasonable. Getting to the hotel is a bit of a challenge as there only seems to be two very narrow lanes into the village. If you value your paintwork or have a wide car then be careful.

"Stop over"
Gazbr, 07 Juillet 2018

Exeter is a great place to stop over on the way to Cornwall. This hotel proved to be a terrible place to pick. It looks great as you approach the building and the views are fantastic. I found it to be very dull though , it smells of stale beer and fried food. it is in desperate need of re decorating. The hotel just felt grubby and dirty. It became obvious that the hotel relies solely on the wedding trade and it felt like if you weren't there for a wedding then you weren't important. ( there was no wedding on when we were there, in fact we never saw another guest at all until check out). At checkout we were ignored while two of the receptionists continued to blow up balloons so I just plonked the keys on the desk and walked out. I definitely will not be going back.

"Friendly welcome in a great location"
sueJ4806HZ, 23 Juin 2018

Great welcome from Paige when I arrived late having got lost. Kirsty (housekeeping) and all the staff were very friendly and helpful to me and to my dog. Amazing tranquil setting, very close to busy Exeter. Good vegan cooked breakfast with no fuss. Accommodation was clean, comfortable and pleasantly old school. Strongly recommended.

"Lord Haldon"
guilders2015, 14 Juin 2018

Great hotel in lovely countryside. It's worth the effort getting there through country lanes. They accept dogs in bedrooms but not in restaurant, but that's pretty standard. Staff are lovely, professional and very helpful. NOTE: No rooms on the ground floor and no lift, so not suitable for anyone with mobility issues or who use a wheelchair. The food in the restaurant was good, well cooked and presented. Nice courtyard for afternoon tea. The hotel does cater for weddings. There wasn't one while we were there so it was very peaceful & quiet.

"Enjoyable overnight stay "
Sunseekers-TRIP, 31 Mai 2018

After negotiating the narrow lanes I was pleased to arrive at this delightful hotel. Plenty of parking available overlooking the surrounding countryside. I stayed in room 25 which was a double corner room. The room was very quiet, the only downside was the WiFi was different to log onto with my laptop. I ate in the bar, the fish n chips and local IPA ale were all good. I slept well and enjoyed a full English breakfast that was freshly cooked to order. I will definitely stay here again when in tge area.

"If you like peace and quiet then you'll love this lace"
Nick F, 28 Mai 2018

Sat nav took me down a questionable little road about 2 miles out of Exeter and i was beginning to wonder about my booking..i need not! Arriving at the car park to find hotel stretched out amongst rolling hills and farmland, nothing but glorious views and only the sound of birdsong. The hotel itself is a lovely old house, yes some of the decor might be a little dated if you stop at premier inn etc but it has lovely character and feel about it. Ate in the lounge bar and had a good meal which wasn't expensive and local beer. Room extremely spacious and lots of tea/coffee etc and good hot shower. Breakfast plentiful and good options with prompt friendly service, constant theme. Very pleasant stay, would happily use this every time i came to Exeter over central locations

"Charlottes Wedding "
lgloom, 28 Mai 2018

Beautiful Manor with stunning views of the countryside absolutely wonderful views . The rooms were immaculate. As a wedding venue first rate food was wonderful detailed planning was first rate staff were attentive an absolute joy to be had and wonderful day enjoyed by all. Also a fantastic place to stay to take in the country side . Thankyou fora truly wonderful day

"Lovely surroundings but"
Gshockxxx, 22 Mai 2018

The pics look good but the hotel is a patch work of different shades of paint work , could do with a revamp all at the same time, The views are fantastic see for miles , The grounds are well kept and would be great for a wedding . Stopped for lunch while wedding was on and it seemed a bit of a hassle to deal with our lunch request , the chap at the bar had to ask the chef if he was doing lunches ! No signs to say not open to public , We had a nice pasta dish each , tasted but nothing to shout about , at £12-£14 a plate Inside seemed smarter than out side restaurant areas seem a bit dark All in all not to bad but not worthy of a second visit I think , Needs a good revamp

"Excellent location"
darrencrump99, 21 Mai 2018

Great hotel in a fantastic location. Only down side are the price of the drinks. It's ok when you are there just for dinner but attending a wedding meant we were there all day so by the end of the evening left a large gap in your wallet

"Lovely quirky hotel"
hpsauce373, 17 Mai 2018

Devon does have some narrow roads !!! but it is well worth a visit. The views from here are quite far reaching, you can see Woodbury Common. The food was well cooked and presented and tasted delicious and was a good kick start to our Brittany trip. The staff were also pleasant

"Enjoyable stay but a few issues......"
Googly2010, 13 Mai 2018

Maybe we are in a minority but, though we enjoyed the lovely location (despite the narrow access roads!), we did find the hotel rather tired and in need of modernisation. Decor in the main public areas and in our bedroom was about 25 years out of date, albeit very clean. We found the windows in our room were so steamed up after a shower, then a night's sleep, that anything left on a sill got soaked by the pool of water that formed. We received unwanted alarm calls at 6.40 each morning despite not requesting one and complaining after the first morning. We ate in on our first night and thought the food was OK, not outstanding. Breakfasts were enjoyable. The best thing about the hotel was the friendly attitude of the staff, especially the young couple in the restaurant and the breakfast servers. It was also very peaceful at night. The grounds and views are very lovely.

"Great hotel with character"
Stocksy S, 03 Mai 2018

Stayed for one night, had a really pleasant stay. Difficult place to get to due to narrow lanes but once there it's worth it. Nice rooms, good food, and friendly staff who looked after all my needs. The hotel is is also in a very quiet rural location and allows dogs. Would go again!

"Fantastic surroundings "
StephBB1210, 02 Mai 2018

As with previous reviewers I followed my Sat Nav and got totally lost ending up in a farm. Once I found it, it was a beautiful building in an amazing setting. Friendly and efficient check in, and a well equipped, roomy and clean bedroom. I couldn't get on the WiFi which was a frustration as I had work to do. The bar was really pleasant with a draught beer on offer (which I didn't sample) , the menu was limited but I had an enjoyable fish and chips, although it did prove tricky catching the attention of the young waiter or waitress who seemed to only have eyes for each other. Kids!!! Breakfast was excellent. I would love to return for a short break and enjoy the surroundings more.

"If you can find it, the staff treat you really well"
Chris W, 22 Avril 2018

My trusty satnav had a bit of difficulty guiding me to this hotel. Instead of going via the main route, it led me a merry Chase in the rain through very narrow Devon roads. I loved it! The hotel building is Listed, and is now just part of what would have been a huge country house. The building is perfectly satisfactory, but hotel snobs might say it is a bit tired and needs a major refurbishment - which you generally can't do with a listed building! My visit was on Easter Monday, and the hotel was very quiet, with the weekenders already having left to get stuck in the queues going home. The very pleasant surprise was that in spite of being almost empty, the local beer stocked in the bar was close to perfect, and the restaurant food served for dinner was excellent. Well above my expectations - well done to all the staff who clearly are well trained and motivated to do a proper job. Overall a pleasant stay, very quiet in the countryside. If you want a noisy joint where you can be the centre of attention, probably don't bother coming here!

"Lovely hotel, beautiful surroudings"
Hannah-Marie C, 17 Avril 2018

Wonderful hotel! The staff are extremely polite, the hotel and rooms are clean. The views are fantastic! There's several walks around the hotel however we didn't get chance to delve into these. Would have loved to stay longer and try the food/bar next time. The only real thing i can say negative is that the walls are quite thin and so we heard the maids talking down the hallways in the morning. However, other than that I would definitely recommend!

"Very reasonable"
Jonathan H, 09 Avril 2018

Stayed here for a couple of nights over Easter - nice location and great if you want a bit of peace and quiet. Had a busy schedule so I didn't eat at the hotel but the room was good and the bathroom was large. Very reasonable prices for my stay - would stay again if ever down Exeter way.

"Easter weekend getaway with beautiful grounds and surroundings "
russsym, 31 Mars 2018

Booked a mini break over the easter bank holiday using my Tesco club card vouchers. Hotel very clean and tidy and friendly staff are helpful. Particularly we were impressed by Dillion the restaurant supervisor who bent over backwards to help us. Recommended, this is our second trip to the hotel.

"Somewhere nice to stay!"
Ken S, 28 Mars 2018

This tucked away hotel is a nice drive out in the countryside, my wife & i stayed for one night with our dog, we found friendly staff, a lovely clean room with nice views over the well tended gardens & beyond, we booked a meal which we took in the bar because we were with our dog & it was the best beefburger & chips ever, top marks to the chef! Breakfast service was very good too..If your looking for somewhere nice to stay the Lord Haldon is a very good 3 star hotel.

"The Range at the Lord Haldon "
janecawright, 23 Mars 2018

The hotel seems to operate a ‘hands off' policy. Quite nice in some ways, but when you want order dinner for example, is quite frustrating. Must operate with the minimum of staff , at least 2 of whom seemed to be new and unsure of things. Bedrooms and bathroom was clean, although dining room cutlery did stick to the table, and the orange juice was off. Worst thing was the decor- wholly inappropriate for a period property. I think they'd got a special deal from the Range. Photos attached. Probably time to move the breakfast menu with the times a little eg porridge, and DAB radio would've been nice.

"Working away again"
Greg H, 08 Mars 2018

A first class stay. Nice room and great food. Excellent service. I was here for a week four nights stay. Food excellent, service excellent. I would recommend this hotel very highly. Prices are reasonable and facilities are good.

"Another great stay"
fayesviews, 04 Mars 2018

I think this the 3rd time of staying here. We had great service. As always the food was so delicious. The room was lovely. I would definitely recommend this hotel. Nothing bad to say. When there was a lot of snow, the receptionist Lesley and maintenance guy did really well with attending to the guests. We had free tea and coffee and were well looked after, they were lovely.

"?? ?? ?? ?? ?? "
JSpencer-Fryer, 02 Mars 2018

What can I say?! This is the first time I've felt the need to write an immediate review (I arrived 20mins ago) 10/10 This hotel is in a stunning location, ample parking and a warm and friendly welcome. I love a bathtub in rooms I stay in as a preference. So I asked at reception. The manager said I have a brand new bath in my room! Now that's service! Not only does my room have a bathtub it is lovely. Huge room, lots of storage, clean, so well presented, quite luxurious for a standard room (and I have stayed in some luxury hotels) The view is amazing and as I type its starting to snow so hoping to wake to some even more gorgeous views! Thoroughly recommend to stay here and I've only just arrived!

"A little dissapointing"
MrMcCain, 23 Février 2018

On first arriving at the hotel it looks lovely. The reception staff were very good and polite and I was soon in my room. It was on more than 2 degrees outside and the rooms radiators had all been turned off. The room as freezing and took some time to heat up after I had gone round and turned all the radiators on. The other disappointing thing was the shower. Very little pressure and the water was only tepid. I would say it was just hot enough so as not uncomfortable. The room (21) was fantastic, large and clean. I ordered room service and the food was good. The food at breakfast was also good. On the whole a lovely hotel but when I'm away on business I want a comfortable bed, warm room and hot shower. But sadly I only got one of them.

"Staff party"
Lucy W, 05 Février 2018

This is our second stay. Room was spotless but could maybe do with a bit of updating as smelt a little damp. Staff were welcoming and friendly. Food was lovely! Would definitely stay again. Breakfast was delicious!

"Peace and quite"
Sprogvig, 22 Janvier 2018

This hotel is only 15 mins from Exeter and the coast but it was so peaceful the only thing you could hear was bird song, the room we had (No21 ) was very spacious with a huge bed, sofa, dressing table and wardrobe. The bathroom was actually a shower room but was very modern and again very spacious, you can upgrade and get slippers and a bathrobe. The grounds are lovely and there's a nice walk down the old drive. Breakfast was delicious with plenty of choice, we stayed in and had an evening meal there 1 night and although there's not a huge selection there should be something for most people, the meals we had tasted delicious and weren't overly large so left enough room for a pudding without feeling bloated. All in all a very nice weekend

"Fab hotel with great staff and a perfect place to stay for dogs!"
Nicola M, 03 Janvier 2018

Absolutely loved this hotel, has everything you need! Great welcome for our dog! I waffle a bit so here's the main points! *great parking *super staff *comfy rooms *delicious food *fab nights sleep * very welcoming for pets with beautiful grounds to walk round. *sat nav can get confused with the location The parking is perfect and the grounds are lovely to walk around and lit well in the evening. Getting to it was a bit of a faff as the sat nav took us to a farm instead but once we found the route it was fine, the lovely manager gave us better directions for leaving which helped and we ignored the sat nav. Food is fabulous , we had room service and the burgers we Devine! Not cheap old burgers , these were real hand made burgers! And of course cheesy chips lol Room was quiet and we had a lovely nights sleep, we used this as a stop over on our way to cornwall which I highly recommend as it breaks the journey up. Breakfast was great, a lovely selection of cereals and juices, with pastries too, lots of jams / preserves also. The cooked breakfast was just the right amount! Staff were attentive and very pleasant. We were alone for most of our brekkie , we thought everyone had left early but alas we were the early ones for once! ( 8:30am) Even though the hotel was preparing for a wedding we had great service and we will be going back. Highly recommended and fab prices

"Amazing staff lovely hotel. "
weddingviduk, 01 Janvier 2018

First i want to point out the best parts of the Lord Haldon, the Staff. They are amazing, from Emma who waited for us at 11.30 at night to Tom who did everything so well and always with a smile. So to all the staff if you read this thank you so much. Katie was amazing, Lesley at reception who we had a few giggles with honestly every one was great. The hotel is clean, well looked after and has lovely grounds to walk around. The rooms were spotless and so comfy. Thank you again from Moe and Amber Wedding Videography Uk

"Surprise & originality"
TomiWhai, 28 Décembre 2017

A positive surprise in many ways, and everything unlike your typical Best Western. We made a last minute reservation and my expectations were not high. But this place, although in places worn (busy refurbishing some floors I believe), had a coxy feel mixed with old world glamour. The set menu was good and service well meaning, friendly and honest. Our room had been recently renovated. So value per Pound if you enjoy a touch of personality...

"Pleasant countryside and shopping weekend"
carolynh248, 16 Décembre 2017

Very good food, and good service from waiting and reception staff. Radiator in bedroom did not work, but a heater was provided instead. Charming country location - easy to get into Exeter, but a little harder getting out again!

"Hidden gem"
X11RAJ, 04 Décembre 2017

Stayed here for one night when in Exeter on business unfortunately it was for just one night as I loved this hotel, fantastic room, the home made chicken and leek pie delicious and the breakfast as good as any five star hotel with so much choice, I have booked to come back in two weeks

"Beautiful country hotel"
Peter R, 24 Novembre 2017

Stopped here overnight between visiting my daughter in Taunton and visiting friends in Devon. Wonderful hotel with just 25 rooms but feels very much larger than this suggests. Very welcoming and a lovely lounge bar serving decent local cask beer and good wine selection. Dinner can be taken in the restaurant or in the bar - same menu same prices and we chose to eat in the bar - good selection of local fare and reasonably priced - 4 drinks 2 starters and 2 main courses for around £60. We will definitely return

"Not Best Westerns Best"
cherry-6om6, 11 Novembre 2017

We stayed here recently and as others have said it's rural, quiet and a pretty spot. The old building is charming but very outdated inside. I read with interest others having the upgraded rooms with countryside views etc. Regrettably we didn't get one of those despite the room being in excess of £100 for the night. There were elements of our room that were frankly shabby such as a frayed blind with stains at the bottom and signs of mould appearing in the bathroom. The vanity unit had no end trim and someone had painted it with a bit of gloss paint. No privacy glass in the bathroom either. The cornicing in the rooms looked awful and the lighting was really bad. I know you don't stay for the decor but for a Best Western hotel personally I didn't think it was worth the money. The staff were very professional and the lady waiting the evening tables was very good indeed. The girls at breakfast did too much talking and not enough serving. The food was good no complaints at all. The grounds are well kept with exception of a ton of rubble at the end of the car park and the drive having more holes than Swiss cheese. This has the potential to be a fabulous hotel, the location is brilliant and the building itself is lovely but I feel sadly neglected and needs a serious overhaul to reflect the room rates.

"Not happy with this one."
SandraEd, 14 Octobre 2017

We paid for 2 nights but only stayed one. No refund but we really couldn't have cared less. We just wanted out. First off, the lane that you had to drive on to get there was so narrow there was no room for an oncoming car to pass. The car that came round the bend and nearly in to us then had to back up a long way til there was a little space to pass. Very unnerving. Hedges and solid bushes both sides so if you drove closer to them your whole side of the car would be scratched to pieces. Then the rooms didn't have any fresh air coming in. Had to ask for a fan. No elevator so we had to carry our heavy cases up stairs.Lovely building but that didn't help with us feeling comfortable there. Rather sad. And we thought it would have been better seeing as it's a Best Western.

"Tremendous staff - high-quality, friendly service"
Nic C, 10 Octobre 2017

Having been called to Exeter hospital for a family emergency it was Friday evening by the time we even started to look for a nearby hotel that could accept the two of us and our dog for an indefinite stay. From the minute we called the LHCH the staff were absolutely fantastic. The lady on the phone explained that they were a bit difficult to find and offered directions and, learning of our situation and that we hadn't eaten all day, offered that we'd be able to get something to eat even if we arrived after chef finished at 8:45pm. Don't be put-off by comments about having to use a rough farm-track. Instead, follow the hotel's instructions of following sat-nav to the village of Ide and then simply taking three lefts on perfectly normal country lanes all the way. When we arrived, Tommy happily showed us three possible rooms in which we could stay with our dog and recommended which would be the quietest. He then ushered us to get something to eat before the kitchen closed saying that we could choose our room and "move in" afterwards. The bar was buzzing with good-natured locals and we enjoyed a much needed pint and wholesome food from the bar menu. We were concerned that mobile phone service seemed a bit scarce but Tommy immediately said he'd be staying at the hotel overnight so to give the hospital their landline number and he'd come and get us if there was a call during the night. At night the hotel is lovely and quiet, we fell asleep to only the sound of an owl. And in the daylight of morning we saw just what a fantastic setting the hotel has, with lovely gardens looking out to endless rolling Devonshire countryside - something we enjoyed even more on Saturday evening with a quiet pint sat on the bench at the top of the garden. We ate from the restaurant menu on Saturday evening and that's the only reason this isn't a 5* review - £20 for a small chicken breast floating in a sesame seed broth?!? C'mon chef. We ended up needing to stay for two nights and received this quality of helpful, friendly service from every member of staff throughout. Congratulations and thank you to you all for achieving both a standard and style of service that many far more expensive establishments should envy - you brought moments of ease, comfort and relaxation to an otherwise very difficult weekend.

"Super friendly staff "
Welshlad3, 02 Octobre 2017

Superb setting. A decent menu with realistic prices that cater for every taste. Food was piping hot, just as I like it. The waiting staff were superb, knowing when to engage and when not to. I'd definitely eat here again

"A Weekend Break"
Ray R, 21 Septembre 2017

We had room 5, it overlooks the countryside and is pretty quiet. There was a wedding reception the first evening but that was in the other wing and caused us little or no bother. The room is enormous, and has a big TV, armchairs and stools, kingsize bed and an equally large bathroom with bath, shower and his and hers sinks, everything was in good order and looked as though it might have been recently refurbished. The bar and restaurant look a bit tired but they have a very good chef and we thoroughly enjoyed the food, my wife is a vegetarian and there was enough choice for her, a welcome change. We eat in the bar because of the wedding and there was a large dining party the following evening but the menu was the same. Our only criticism was the speed of service, they have a very small staff and when they have a big event on they are clearly stretched and getting in extra staff in a rural location must be challenging. The staff are all pleasant and very friendly and very helpful, nothing was too much trouble, e.g. the WIFI is good but a bit odd (Sky) and the receptionist walked me through setting it up on my iPad. It's off the beaten track down some very narrow roads and the drive has quite a few holes, not a problem for us we have a Freelander and live in Cornwall, but a car with low suspension might find it a challenge. All in all a nice break in a lovely setting, we would probably go again.

"A just 'ex-Exeter' gem up in the hills."
bschum, 18 Septembre 2017

If you are prepared to be outside the city a few miles, and up some country lanes, this place is worth the excursion. 15 minutes from town perched up on the hills in beautiful gardens and with extensive views. A very pleasant, light and spacious room in this genteel manor house. Did not eat here as had other arrangements so cannot comment. Very friendly staff.

"Very acceptable and stunning views"
carolblunkett64, 30 Août 2017

This was a last minute weekend away and a really lucky find. The views of Devon are absolutely amazing and the hotel itself lovely. It's hard to find as it is right up narrow countryt lanes but its worth it. Have had an amazing weekend and will be back.

"Hidden gem"
JMK1962, 29 Août 2017

Wonderful countryside setting & impressive grounds. Room was comfortable, if a little on the smaller side. Dinner was a very pleasant surprise & very good value (part of a 'deal') Overall a good stay. I would return.

"Disappointment: superb setting, great room, let down by food and service"
Judith O, 28 Août 2017

Glorious country setting for this imposing part-Georgian hotel. A very comfortable and attractive room, recently refurbished, we think, with excellent en suite facilities and a lovely outlook over the garden. (Room 1) We knew they were hosting a wedding party and accepted there would be restricted dining space and lack of access to the bar, as they had set up tables nicely and provided bar / coffee in the lounge. But whether the chef was too busy with the wedding, or the food is always that standard, it was disappointing. The menu wasn't very inspiring and we decided to go with their 'classics' - pie of the day and lasagne with salad. I asked for dressing for my salad, and was met with a wrinkled brow, so changed my request to mayonnaise - which came in plastic sachets which I had to tear open and leave on the nice white linen tablecloth. My partner's lamb and mint pie, rustic in its size and simplicity, was tasty enough, but accompanied by a huge dollop of mash that covered half the plate, and almost the same serving of peas. The desserts didn't appeal, and we opted for coffee in the lounge. By which time it appeared the waiting staff had reduced from three to one - and she was dealing with four tables in the dining room and two sets of people in the lounge. So service thereafter was even slower. What a pity such a wonderful place can't carry off the whole package.

"Needs work for a better review"
tomkellie, 22 Août 2017

The Lord Haldon based near Exeter looks impressive and is located near some incredible walks and benefits from the local scenery. The cost ranges from £90 - £180 with additionally for Bed and Breakfast along with any 'pet in room charges that we took advantage of. Considering the prices the star rating is a little generous. The staff where at best helpful and at worst completely lacking in presence or ability. Evident at breakfast where comments of 'sit anywhere' on arrival and an in ability or lack of interest when providing service led to us repeating requests for simple things - like tea! Grubby. On arrival we checked our room and found yellow fluid still present around the toilet - this was in ours and our other guests room. This was reported and both bathrooms were cleaned to an acceptable standard. Glassware, crockery, cutlery where all tired and unclean - on two occasions items where returned and the substituted items only just providing improvement. If you are looking for a cheap clean night this probably isn't for you. If you are happy to rough it for a bit at a higher than average price then book away.

"Great setting, beautifully quiet, clean fresh room"
317andrewj, 21 Août 2017

Had a great mid week break here - large family room for 2 adults, 2 kids - clean and modern room at the top of the hotel. Hotel is only a few minutes from Exeter but in a wonderfully quiet location. Staff very helpful.

"Our wedding"
a27inheaven, 21 Août 2017

We got married here on Saturday August 19th. We had an absolutely amazing day. From the moment we arrived Ruth and her team couldn't have helped us anymore than they did. Everything from the rooms to the food was perfect. The roast chicken cooked by the chef Dan was delicious and the trifles were beautifully made and tasted lovely. The baby cream teas proved very popular by everyone. The hotel is perfect and with the stunning views you really can't ask for anything more. Well done The Lord Haldon team you should all be very proud of yourselves and Thank you for the memories.

"Great experience at The Lord Haldon Hotel."
945gary, 11 Août 2017

Great rooms. Great food. Huge king size bed. Pet friendly rooms available Plenty of free parking. Be careful getting here 1 of the roads to the hotel is single track and not tarmac. But there are several roads to a great hotel who seem to love dogs. Plenty of space and grass and woods to walk them in too Great experience and will return

"Looking for somewhere dog friendly"
reviewer23_12, 03 Août 2017

Had lunch here yesterday (four people and two dogs) and really enjoyed it. We were able to have our own dining room, the staff were very friendly and the food was good. The beer (apparently) was wonderful! We were looking for somewhere that we can stay with dogs and the staff were kind enough to show us the sort of rooms that we would be able to have - very clean and welcoming. We will definitely be back.

"Friends Wedding"
helennelson55, 30 Juillet 2017

Stunning location, the views are amazing. Our room was very comfortable. We had tea and coffee facilities in our room. Also a large wardrobe and plenty of draws. The bathroom was nicely decorated with a bath come shower. Unfortunately this hotel doesn't seem to be disabled friendly as it doesn't have a lift and the rooms are up stairs. The wedding took place in a room especially decorated for the ceremony, which then became the dining and then the disco room. The food was delicious and the waiting staff were very friendly. The breakfast in the morning was varied and very tasty. A good time was had by all, thanks

"Lovely Setting"
AnnaandJohn, 27 Juillet 2017

Stayed for three nights in July 2017. Lovely location and great views. Nice quiet country setting. We had room 32 which had lovely views. The staff friendly and efficient. The food good. Although the building is old, the rooms are spacious, comfortable and in good condition. It proved to be a good base to travel onto Dartmoor or to the south Devon coast. If you use a satnav it sends you through miles of single track lanes with few passing places. Best always to travel to and from the hotel via the village of Ide to the north and travel onwards comfortably from there.

"Third visit with our dog and it was great"
SaraSpangleGreen, 24 Juillet 2017

Third but hopefully not last visit to this lovely hotel with our little lurcher. Staff friendly and accommodating and it's so nice to be able to take a dog and be relaxed about it. Grounds are lovely, room comfortable and evening bar meal good. Service a bit slow in the bar but didn't mar our stay. Reception staff really good.

"Beautiful hotel off the beaten track"
Sharon C, 21 Juillet 2017

Stayed here for two nights during graduation week and loved it. Beautiful old house in gorgeous grounds surrounded by stunning views. A wonderful peaceful getaway from Exeter city. My room was spacious with lovely views, comfy bed and nice clean spacious bathroom. The staff were friendly, particularly the waiting staff at breakfast and dinner. Meals were tasty and well cooked and reasonably priced. The narrow Devon lane to get to the hotel from the main road is a little hair raising but this is Devon! Will definitely return.

"Good spacious rooms"
Nicx1, 11 Juillet 2017

Stayed here for a wedding, was a lovely venue with a courtyard ideal for socialising. Rooms were very spacious and nice views of the courtyard and garden. Breakfast was lovely, staff very friendly just a little slow but we were in no hurry so didn't matter.

"Very Very Good"
graham_wotton, 10 Juillet 2017

We stayed on a Wedding Free Weekend i think this made a big difference, we had room no 1 just been redecorated very very nice lovely view to the woods, the location is STUNNING ideal for us as we were riding our motorbike on the Sunday at Newton Abbott for Devon Air Ambulance Charity Ride out, The Hotel was so quiet it was amazing and the room was so dark at night Perfect, the breakfast was Great as was the evening meal the night before, we found all the Staff very Polite Friendly and Chatty, the Food & Drink might be a little overpriced but you are paying for the LOCATION , we were sat in the Garden at 11 pm saturday night with a G&T we could'nt hear a sound !!! Bliss, On saying that it might be different if there is a Function on because it is a Smallish Hotel check before booking we will definitely return at some date ps the Wi-Fi is a bit hit or miss but i can live without it for 24 hrs

"needs TLC to take it out of the70s"
phil s, 07 Juillet 2017

stayed here for two nights. A very traditional english hotel. The room was fine and the views superb (room 25). The staff very good and helpful. The location is very remote but the hotels website directions are spot on. Unless you want to travel at least 4-5 miles for dinner you are very restricted. This is where there is a bit of a problem. The restaurant is somewhere between a harvester and a beefeater. The menu is fairly small and portions enormous!!!!! This is a very subjective comment, but my wife had tortellini with gorgonzola it came in a large bowl of very green thick sauce and the tortellini was the size of a golf ball!!!!!!! Not like anything we have ever seen. My steak was OK but you would have to like a lot of peas to finish it, from my point of view too much. The next night I had slow cooked belly pork. There was on small slice of pork and a massive amount of mashed potato which was all the wrong consistency, very loose, you could have poured it on to the plate. The pork crackling was inedible it was like biting on a pencil, you could break a tooth. And at over £20 far to expensive, the raw ingredients could not have cost more than £2.00. Breakfast was fine except fried bread was like soggy blotting paper. The restaurant need to be brought into the 21st century and the food a bit more refined. Also the courtyard out side the restaurant looked like all the cigarette butts in devon had been dumped there and the furniture need a bit of TLC. But at the end of the day the its an OK hotel.

"Beautiful Gardens"
LynneUKLeicester, 07 Juillet 2017

Homely Country Hotel set in well kept grounds, lovely views. Helpful staff, efficient check in. Individually cooked breakfast. Comfortable bed. Courtyard rooms overlook the function room area, hotel did email us to inform us of a function on the evening we were due to stay. They were true to their promise the event would be over by 11pm. It was fine as we were out until late...but if you want a quiet evening and an early night it may be best to secure a room that is not adjacent to or overlooking the Courtyard area.

"4 night stay - comfortable hotel and good service"
Ross S, 03 Juillet 2017

We stayed for a 4 night break - our room was comfortable- albeit there were several minor problems ( blinds not working, loo flush and mirror light faulty) - which we reported but were not fixed. The Hotel Staff were attentive and helpful ( for example, my Wife likes smoked salmon and scrambled eggs for breakfast - not on the menu but were produced with no trouble and no extra cost). We ate in the restaurant one night - not so good - the menu was ambitious but the food was very average,( for example a risotto that was so overcooked it was mush) and not cheap! Overall we enjoyed our stay - but a more efficient maintenance Man and a better dinner Chef would be a wise investment. By the way - don't use SATNAV to find the entrance - it takes you to a back entrance and farm track up to the hotel - follow the signs to the Village instead.

"Wedding reception location."
Alan L, 30 Juin 2017

The Hotel was a superb location for my daughters wedding reception. All of the rooms were made available for guests, the reception hall was excellent and the staff could not have been more helpful. If I had to point out a negative it would probably be the price of drinks but it's a minor point. we couldn't have asked for a better venue.

"Ideal birthday surprise!"
fabulousredhead, 25 Juin 2017

I booked this as a surprise weekend stay for my husband's birthday. We wanted somewhere picturesque and quiet and this did not disappoint. We had an amazing view from our room, which was very clean and comfortable. Breakfast was very good, there was a selection of cereals, yoghurts, and fruit plus a full English if you so wished. The hotel is down some narrow lanes but this is Devon so that's to be expected! It's not far from Exeter so ideal if you want a day looking round the city first. Would use again and recommend to others.

"Very noisy at night"
Anne H, 01 Juin 2017

Our room was right in the middle of a large noisy family group who seemed to spend their time running from room to room shouting in the corridors. At 10.30 I opened the bedroom door and asked if they would please quieten down because the hotel was not a playground. Why aren't people more respectful of others needs. We did not expect this level of noise from a hotel which is very remote. We avoid city centre hotels for this reason. When reception asked me at checkout the next morning how we had slept and I told here she did not seem surprised. When I asked her why we had been put in the middle of this group she said that there was not another room available she could have put us in.

"Very comfortable and clean and slightly quirky"
dlewisbill, 24 Mai 2017

My daughter and I shared a very comfortable and clean, twin bedded room in this hotel which does not have a lift. The bathroom was very nice with both a shower and a bath and the toiletries supplied were attractively packaged. The floor outside the bathroom was somewhat uneven and I did suggest that, unless that was addressed, Room 14 probably shouldn't be offered to other disabled guests. Very attractive wallpaper was not enhanced by the rather nasty picture on the wall which was hung in an odd position but, taste apart, the room was a good size and had a good size TV and a kettle with plenty of tea/coffee/milk. I only had contact with the Reception staff, James and the Assistant Manager both of whom were very helpful, courteous and friendly. The hotel is in a quiet area a short distance from Exeter in lovely countryside and the hotel gardens were beautiful. The approach road (private land I believe) was in shocking condition and the hotel owners ought to set some money aside to remedy the worst of this as it must cause damage to non 4 x 4 vehicles. Excellent car parking. The only other issue I have is that there was a fire alarm incident shortly after 7am on the morning we left caused, we were told, by the system not recognising the difference between a steamy bathroom and a smoky one: if true, the system needs to be dealt with!

"Different staff?"
Abcdefghijklmnop1, 13 Mai 2017

Looking at previous reviews, I must have visited this hotel when all of the 'fantastic' and 'friendly' staff were on holiday. I found some of their temporary replacements to be cold at best. During my four day stay, reception did not look up at me once let alone say hello. Even on check in the receptionist avoided any eye contact. I made a point of saying hello every time I went past reception in an attempt to cultivate a response. To no avail. I must say though that there was a younger girl and chap working the bar on one of the evenings who were very friendly and professional. They are a real asset to a hotel otherwise bereft of personality. Service aside, the hotel is in a wonderful location if you can find it. Food is ok. Rooms and corridors are tired and a little shabby.

"Hidden gem"
VisionaryTraveller17, 09 Mai 2017

Lovely hotel set way into the countryside; with views to boot. Rooms were small and a little dated but this fitted the character of this property. Staff were friendly and the restaurant and bar (although small) met all of my needs. I would make sure you plan your route into the hotel. If you follow sat nav (woops i did) it took me along a farm entrance and my car took a beating. Lovely hotel in a lovely setting.

"Lovely setting, great value"
Jon D, 30 Avril 2017

There are lots of positives about the Lord Haldon - from the outside it has lovely grounds, beautiful countryside views and lots of parking. Once inside the hotel, the positives continue - staff were all very friendly and attentive and the food, (room service meal and breakfast) was high quality and efficiently served. The upgraded rooms were fully booked, so I had a standard room (number 35) which was spotlessly clean with a comfortable bed and at the end of the corridor so nice and quiet. A few negatives - my room was quite small and felt a bit basic and the bathroom was very dated, but functional nonetheless. The wi-fi was also very difficult to access. However when you factor in the very reasonable room rates, overall I would definitely recommend the Lord Haldon and will certainly visit again.

"perfect wedding venue"
carolinefoxworthy, 29 Avril 2017

Recently got married here and stayed 2 nights. Wedding was amazing from start to finish with the help of the wonderful staff. We had a beautiful room with lovely views. The hotel was very clean and the food was excellent. Special thanks to Ruth , James and Tommy who helped to make our day go without a hitch.

"Amazing Staff"
Donnacarb, 29 Avril 2017

Recently stayed 2 nights for a friends wedding. Great surroundings. Lovely room. Very clean. Great Food. But most of all amazing staff, especially James, Tommy and Ruth. Who went out of there way to help in any way they could. Would not hesitate to recommend this hotel.

"Quiet comfortable Hotel with excellent breakfast"
twolancastrians, 29 Avril 2017

The Lord Haldon provided a comfortable break on our way down to Cornwall. It is well signposted but some of the country roads are narrow and need care. Best to avoid arriving around 3pm on school days as the neighbouring village is choked with parked cars. That said it is well worth the effort for a comfortable night's sleep and excellent food.

"Lovely hotel with beautiful setting"
Juleskathleen4, 22 Avril 2017

The room was really lovely and spacious with everything we needed and the bathroom was excellent. The hotel was situated in an ideallic setting in the middle of the countryside with fantastic views. The breakfast was excellent with choices of yogurts, croissants, cereals, juices, tea and coffee as well a delicious full English breakfast. It was extremely good value for money and we will definitely stay at the hotel again.

"The sort of Customer Service one wishes could be found everywhere."
ah462, 20 Avril 2017

Particularly pleasant and helpful staff and a comfortable and well-decorated room for ourselves and our dog. We had a bit of difficulty finding the hotel initially using Satnav but the directions to get to and from Exeter given by the receptionist worked perfectly. Lovely, quiet location in well-maintained grounds. The breakfast was cooked to order and very tasty. I hope we will be able to stay here again.

"Enjoyable 2 night break"
AlanandValerie, 18 Avril 2017

Overall the hotel was excellent -friendly and helpful staff and a good restaurant for dinner. The only minuses were: Wifi was almost impossible to get, despite a very helpful receptionist trying to assist. Also the hotel was difficult to find in its somewhat remote location.

"Beautiful surroudings"
amy_crocker, 18 Avril 2017

Myself & my partner recently stayed here for two nights as we were attending a wedding at the hotel. I am a fairly new driver & although finding the hotel was easy enough (we used a satnav), the small country lanes were a bit of a struggle. We encountered drivers coming the other way resulting in one of us having to reverse, horses & dog walkers! When we arrived at the hotel we were pleasantly surprised with how beautiful the views were. There were ducks walking around the grounds & many guests had their dogs with them. We checked in at reception & went to our room. Again we were pleasantly surprised at how beautifully the room was decorated & how much space there was (Room 1) It was just after 2pm when we arrived & after a long journey we were looking forward to a spot of lunch. Unfortunately when we asked at reception we were informed that the kitchen didn't open until 6pm & it was about 5 miles to the nearest pub. After much consideration we decided against the scary drive back through the country lanes to go to the pub. We went for a stroll around the grounds & passed back through reception. As we walked through we were greeted by who I think was the Manager (I could be wrong). She asked if we were ok & we explained that we had travelled quite a way & were rather hungry. without hesitation she rang through to the chef & he said we were welcome to order food. This was a huge relief & we really felt like they had gone above our expectations to do this for us. The food was great! Fish & Chips & the cheeseburger - highly recommend both! We retreated to our room for the rest of the day & came back down around 7:30pm for dinner. Again the food was great & the atmosphere was calm & relaxed. The staff in the bar were very friendly. Our sleep that evening was great. The bed was very comfy & it was great to sleep somewhere so silent! Breakfast the next morning was rather disappointing to be honest. After such a great start the day before we were expecting better. There continental selection was great but the cooked breakfast was not very nice. The eggs were snotty, the bacon was very fatty & the beans & sausages had a weird taste to them. The whole wedding experience was amazing. The food was great as was the service throughout the day. We decided to skip breakfast the next morning & opted to grab something at a service station rather than eat at the hotel. Although we were awake fairly early, we could hear housekeeping quite loudly knocking on other rooms to see if they had been vacated yet. Whilst this wasn't a huge concern for us I'm sure other members of the wedding party would have still been sleeping & may not have appreciated the loud banging. We would definitely consider staying here again if we were ever needing a room in this part of the country.

"Excellent customer service"
Christine K, 17 Avril 2017

The hotel is in a lovely quiet location with beautiful views. I was very impressed with the level of customer service as the team went to great effort to accommodate a special request we had made. We booked a dog friendly room which was large, comfortable, well decorated and very clean. We were attending a wedding so didn't experience the restaurant menu however the following morning the breakfast was cooked to order and was very tasty. We will definitely stay here again.

"Beautiful location and lovely staff"
Clare Fay F, 16 Avril 2017

We chose this hotel as we were visiting family in the area. The hotel is situated only five miles away from Exeter, but it is set in beautiful countryside with wonderful views. The staff especially in the bar/restaurant couldn't be friendlier, nothing was to much trouble for them. We had a very relaxing stay and will definetly return. To get to the hotel there is a winding country road, the best way we found, was to follow the road from Ide.

"Anniversary Escape"
Eric G, 12 Avril 2017

Stayed here for one night in April for our anniversary, the hotel is in a beautiful location with some stunning views. There is plenty of parking and the staff are very friendly. We had a large room with everything we needed. Breakfast was cooked to order which is great and the bar at night has a nice atmosphere.

"Picturesque location"
Darticus, 22 Mars 2017

There are a couple of not so good points about the Lord Haldon Country House Hotel. First of all it is a fairly long windy and narrow road to get there, so be prepared for that if your not a confident driver. Secondly the room i stayed in which i believe was room 7 (forgive me if i am wrong) had a damp smell to it. The room itself was spotless and spacious and well kept, with a fair size bathroom containing a stand in cubicle shower. And on a positive note, the lady that fronted the reception (RB) was absolutely a diamond, down to to earth and a friendly sort. There is a bar well stocked with drinks, and enough seating for family, friends, groups, i would say it could hold around 20-30 people. The chap that was serving the drinks and food that night (S) was a nice chap (needs to smile a bit more) was very professional and efficient. I had a ribeye steak with chips and i have to say it was presented as i would expect, with no complaints. Would i recommend this hotel? Yes i would if it was a bit cheaper.

"A first stay"
Sarin22, 21 Mars 2017

I stayed in the hotel last night and it was throughly enjoyable from check in to check out it was very nice, the only blip was some eejit set the fire alarm by not closing the bathroom door but this was at no fault the staffs responsibility even though the were apologetic, the setting is stunning with great parking. We were even entertained by a duck outside the window at breakfast which again was well prepared and the waiting staff were very polite, I would certainly return and would recommend you to stay there

"Lunch"
Judith H, 13 Mars 2017

A group of us had Sunday lunch there recently and frankly it was a bit sad. The staff couldn't tell the difference between the Cod Provencale and Roast Chicken with stuffing. The food was luke warm in several cases on our table. We had beef and it was tender and tasty with excellent gravy. I'm quite sure we made the best choice. However, it was inexpensive but I would prefer to pay a little more and have something a little better. The room was cold and really lacking atmosphere. Nevertheless, this is a lovely hotel with spectacular views and well worth a visit. The staff are friendly.

"Another lovely stay at Lord Haldon Country House Hotel"
SaraSpangleGreen, 11 Mars 2017

This was my second visit to this lovely hotel and once again I wasn't disappointed. The staff are friendly and attentive and I love it that my dog is welcome here. Breakfast very good and we enjoyed a delicious evening meal too. The setting is so peaceful and idyllic. Highly recommended (ps you need to love country roads to get here!)

"Lovely stay and lovely staff!"
caroline l, 28 Novembre 2016

Stayed here for one night on a business trip with my dog in tow. The room was clean and tidy, and the bed comfortable. All the staff were brilliant and made both myself and my dog very very welcome, would defiantly stay again.

"Nice night away"
whitey594, 26 Novembre 2016

A nice little hotel, slightly dated around the seams but an enjoyable time spent there, a good meal and friendly bar, spectacular views from the hotel and from the resteraunt, would recomend and visit again

"Delightful hotel in the Devon countryside."
peteroaktree, 24 Novembre 2016

Stayed there on a one night break with breakfast and dinner. The hotel is really out in the country with views over the surrounding countryside. Staff were very helpful and polite. Asked for a room with a view and were given room 25, and in the morning we were able to admire the Devon countryside with cows as well. Our room was spacious with a corner bath in the bathroom. One negative comment was the walls of the adjoining bathrooms are a bit thin and although it did not affect us, one could hear the adjacent rooms showers running into the baths. The hotel has a cosy bar serving real ale. There is a lounge area as well which leads off to the dining room. Food for dinner was good being able to choose most things off the menu for the rate we payed. Good choice of food at the breakfast table with hot food cooked to order. the hotel was very quiet at our visit but as an ideal place for weddings, I have no doubt it gets busy on the weekends. Would return if in area.

"Weekend break"
JenJaz123, 13 Novembre 2016

Amazing setting especially if you want total peace & quiet. The hotel has amazing views of the countryside and over the hills. The hotel itself is missing something though, the furnishings are quite 1970's and not particularly atmospheric or in keeping with the age of the building. Lacks old pictures on the walls, some very odd pictures in the corridors which ought to be removed as they look like cheap ones from The Range! Our bedroom was super, double aspect with wonderful views, very nicely decorated and a lovely shower room ensuite. Room 31 if anyone wants recommendation of a lovely room. It was at the top of the hotel so a few stairs to climb but worth it. We ate dinner in the restaurant in the evening. Good choice of food and wines. Again, lacked atmosphere and neither old world or new. The staff were all very nice and polite and very helpful. Definitely would go again in room 31.

"Amazing Wedding"
r3dr0ses, 01 Novembre 2016

We were lucky enough to be invited to a wedding at this hotel. I've got to say we were really impressed. The staff were welcoming and friendly. The room were nice and clean. My husband wanted to take the bed home with us, shame it wouldn't fit in the car!! The staff were very attentive especially during the wedding and the reception room looked amazing. Food was also great. Lastly the view from our room was stunning. Highly recommend this hotel, so much so that we have already booked to go again for next Christmas.

"Fantastic place"
Guinness15, 01 Novembre 2016

Stayed here over the Halloween weekend for a family wedding. Can't fault the place at all. Lovely welcome by the reception staff. Stayed in room 34, lovely and clean, with fantastic views of the countryside. Friendly bar and breakfast service brilliant, good choice of items available and nothing too much trouble. The wedding was amazing from start to finish, the room, the service, the staff, the atmosphere and one of the best sticky toffee puddings I have had. Would highly recommend this hotel, yes it is up lots of little country lanes, but can't fault it.

"Wedding Stay"
Jane T, 01 Novembre 2016

We stayed here on 29th and 30th October for a family wedding. The hotel is lovely in beautiful surroundings. The staff are friendly and helpful and the breakfasts are delicious. The rooms (we had two, one for three people and one for two) were spacious, beautifully decorated and very comfy beds. The bathrooms were modern and spotless. I wouldn't hesitate to stay here again, in fact family members are already planning a Christmas here and hopefully the happy couples first wedding anniversary! Highly recommended

"Lovely, when you find it."
Ian M, 31 Octobre 2016

Don't trust an old sat-nav when you are looking for this hotel or you could find yourself going down some very narrow cart tracks. Once you arrive the place is lovely, with friendly staff who are keen to tell you about the history of the building. The room that we had was clean and comfortable. The food was excellent with large portions, and there is a pleasant bar with good beers.

"Peace & quiet"
Freybird, 31 Octobre 2016

Lovely hotel, very peaceful, staff very friendly & helpful. Stayed with family & friends, rooms very spacious & clean, lovely breakfast. Word of warning to other the lanes leading up to this hotel are long and narrow, I'm used to this but others may find it a bit intimidating.

"Lord Haldon "
forestsaint, 29 Octobre 2016

Stayed here for one night. The room had been recently decorated and was comfortable. The bathroom was clean but a bit dated. The wifi was available throughout the hotel and the speed was adequate. The food was very good and the service in the restaurant was quick and the staff very polite. Check in and check out was very smooth. The location is very quiet and the views from the hotel are glorious. The reception and restaurant area are a bit dated in their decor but seemed very clean. Excellent value for money.

"Lovely hotel"
David G, 21 Octobre 2016

Lovely hotel in great surroundings. Room, service and food good. Great place to stay if you like out of the way places but don't expect great night life! Suited me just fine, would defiantly stay here again if I was in the area. Sat-nav very useful in finding location as miles from anywhere.

"FANTASTIC PLACE TO GET MARRIED!!"
Phil P, 20 Octobre 2016

We got married here on 24/09/16 and we can't speak highly enough of the place. Ruth and the team are brilliant, nothing is too much trouble and they have patience to spare! The grounds are lovely for photos and they did us proud in terms of the food which was great and the rooms were excellent. Many of our guests stayed the night of the reception and we've had nothing but praise from any of them. Can't recommend highly enough!

"Shocking !!"
Wheresmywally, 18 Octobre 2016

Booked this lovely hotel well what I thought was nice when we arrived the gardens are beautiful and then u walk in reception and it hits u , down and dingy place , went to our room which had nice view but the room itself was not very nice mould in the bath room with very bad tiling very dated decor would never stay again

"Hidden away"
Michael B, 17 Octobre 2016

I have stayed here before on business, so was aware that it is accessed by very narrow roads and it is tucked away in the middle of no where. This time I was staying with my wife and our 2 dogs. very quiet and peaceful, fair sized room, everything worked. Breakfast was cooked to order and offered a reasonable choice. We also ate in the bar area in the evening (where the dogs were allowed to be) and there was a good choice of different dishes to select from.

"Devon break"
Angela E, 16 Octobre 2016

Hotel was very comfortable the service was excellent. This is an ideal wedding venue as the hotel lends itself to some lovely photos and the views across the countryside are stunning. The breakfast was very good, the scallops in the starter were fantastic and would have been better with a salad rather than pork belly but over all the evening meals were good but nothing special.

"a curates egg"
TedJ140, 16 Octobre 2016

reception staff do not enjoy their jobs and would benefit from a training course on smiling and a welcome waiters are good Chefs are a real asset This travel site insisting on min 200 words is just farcical

"Nice Hotel and Location (nearly 5 stars) - be aware No Lift"
Gareth P, 29 Septembre 2016

Stayed one night for a wedding. Lovely location and friendly very helpful staff, especially for my mum who doesn't do stairs very well - she was escorted through the staff areas to avoid steps wherever possible.Comfy beds and clean rooms, although mine needed some TLC. Shower needed replacing, slippery tray and shower valve was loose - also no towel rail. Breakfast was excellent: choice of full or veggie English, kippers, haddock, continental, cereals, gluten free and very tasty was the full English. If it wasn't for the shower room definitely would've been 5 stars.

"Great hotel"
Steve B, 26 Septembre 2016

My wife and I stayed for two nights in Sept 2016. Nice easy check in with very pleasant and welcoming staff. We stayed in room 31 good size and very quite being on the second floor great views over the hotel grounds and surrounding country side, the room had a double aspect and a good ensuit. Only down side was the three flights of stairs to the room and no lift. A good menu at reasonable prices and always served very hot? The Hotel is in the middle of nowhere and it means a few miles of very narrow lanes to get there. We had a good few days and will return.

"Quiet comfortable hotel"
Malcolm F, 26 Septembre 2016

This is the second time we have stayed here. The hotel is in a beautiful setting although there are narrow and difficult lanes to get there, it well worth it. The hotel is clean, comfortable and very well maintained. The staff are very helpful, friendly and polite at all times. There is no lift although level access is possible. The food menu is arranged such that ANY combination of food may be ordered from all of the menu. The food is excellent and very well presented. Thoroughly recommend this hotel.

"A good branded Best Western hotel"
theresaheadinit, 23 Septembre 2016

Date of this stay 22nd September 2016 (which is my first stay here) Room 26 My ongoing experience of the hotel is as follows: 1) Arrival was straightforward using the Sat Nav instructions from the hotel, the last few miles were down very narrow country lanes for which the Sat Nav truly came into its very own. 2) There is a large free car park that surrounds the hotel at the front 3) On arrival at the hotel the check in staff were pleasant and friendly 4) I received access to the free WIFI throughout my stay 5) All area's including the bedrooms were always well kept, tidy and clean. 6) My room No 26 was clean and well maintained, in particular the bathroom was sparkling clean, please give my compliment to the housekeeping team. 7) The hotel is of the typical twee and older style country house hotel that you expect from the mainstream brand. 8) I arrived after 9PM so was unable to sample the evening meal on this occasion. 9) Breakfast was a traditional English breakfast cooked to your order, I ordered the smoked haddock and poached egg which was the best I have had this year. Many thanks to the chef. 10) Check out, was straight forward and hassle free In summary the hotel scores 8.5/10 for a good Best Western branded hotel .

"Enjoyable!"
Shelagh O, 14 Septembre 2016

We booked last minute and had no idea what we would get. On arrival Tommy made us very welcome and was more than happy to change our allocated room to a more suitable one. The atmosphere was lovely - calm and comfortable. Our room was spacious, with well placed furniture, beautiful furnishings and had spectacular country views from two aspects. The beds were very comfortable! Our dinner was freshly cooked, was fantastically tasty and was served by the chef himself as our waiter was busy elsewhere! Our waiter was professional and friendly with a great sense of humour and attended us very well. The breakfast staff were equally lovely and friendly without losing their professional touch to their work. A marvellous place to stay! Our only issue was lack of disabled facilities. There is nothing that can be done because of the type of building but the staff help as much as they can. If you are unable to manage stairs sadly this would not be the place for you. My mum and I felt the struggle we had was worth it!

"Good stay"
428jamese, 13 Septembre 2016

A fine stay enhanced by a charming staff. Good quality food served hot and in ample helpings. Quite setting with some problems in locating down single track roads but well worth the effort. A return visit is very likely.

"Secluded country hotel not suitable for the disabled."
Judith S, 09 Septembre 2016

A secluded country hotel, reached down very narrow lanes, with nice gardens and good bedrooms. We did not find the restaurant menu to our taste as there was a lack of local dishes or fish and seafood that wasn't Asian influenced (Teriyaki marinated swordfish ???) or any 'plain' vegetarian selection. However breakfast was good. The first night there was a wedding on that seemed to take over the hotel and was quite noisy until midnight. It was difficult to park and there is no disabled parking and the car park is a few hundred yards away from reception. There is no lift in the hotel and steps everywhere. Not at all suitable for wheelchair users. The staff were pleasant and once the wedding party had gone it was a peaceful stay.

"An enigma"
ruthml817, 08 Septembre 2016

This is a hard hotel to pin down in a few words. If you want ultra modern, no. If you want bells and whistles, no If on the other hand you want very quiet, gorgeous relaxing views, and a homely atmosphere, then more than yes. The hotel is situated down country lanes, and is formed from part of a 300 year old listed stately home. We stayed in deluxe bedroom no 5, and I must say this is a beautiful room overlooking the front and the rolling hills beyond. A beautifully well appointed bathroom, big shower, large corner bath and double sink/vanity unit. Bedroom has lots of space, with a king size bed, plenty of cupboards, armchairs, a coffee table and a flat screen TV, also to my amazement at least 5 sets of double electricity sockets. The bed however for me was slightly hard and uncomfortable, however my husband thought it was fantastic. We had one evening meal and two breakfasts, I must say there were some errors within the meals, (breaded chicken breast, and scrambled eggs) however also some flashes of inspiration. The hotels decor and furniture I feel are in need of some TLC and a make over to make it slightly more modern and to elevate it from feeling like, in my opinion, a B&B, but I must say everything was clean and well presented, and as mentioned being a listed building options I assume are limited. Worth mentioning car journey time from centre of Exeter is about 10/15 mins.

"Our visit to Devon"
Mark010, 05 Septembre 2016

The Lord Haldon Country Hotel Exeter is exceptional. My wife and I stayed for one night in September 2016 and I wished we had booked for longer! The staff were welcoming, helpful and at all times professional, they made a visit to nice hotel into a great experience! I almost forgot, the food is great!

"Fabulous family wedding"
Chris M, 29 Août 2016

Family wedding and all of the rooms in the hotel were booked by family and friends. This made for a very comfortable and family friendly venue. The service was relaxed but emotional, lunch was superb and the evening buffet was plentiful. All of the staff were efficient and friendly, the rooms clean and spacious and breakfast was delicious. A thoroughly enjoyable all round service. Thank you

"Amazing Place, Excellent Service"
Jacquie L, 24 Août 2016

Enjoyed the amenities, location and efficient staff. Staff were most helpful on arrival and indeed throughout the visit. Food and breakfast was excellent. Room was clean and comfortable, lots of space, decent size bathroom as well. The views were amazing and it was peaceful in the garden. Went walking through a couple of the lanes in the afternoon which was delightful.

"Paper thin walls"
Salixboy, 22 Août 2016

Second time that I have stayed and it feels like a missed opportunity. The location is peaceful and tranquil but due to the stud walls between bedrooms and squeaky floorboards, its difficult to sleep as you hear EVERYTHING. Upgraded rooms are not worth the extra money. Dinner and breakfast are OK (poached eggs taste too strongly of vinegar) and staff are efficient if not overly joyous. Compares with the cookie cutter "motels" but it could be so much more.

"Holiday break "
Desi M, 22 Août 2016

What a lovely hotel. The staff made you so welcome. The views around the hotel were lovely. The gardens made a nice walk before dinner. The food was lovely. The family room was clean fresh and ideal for are family. Great night sleep. Then breakfast was good. Highly recommend this hotel

"Lovely location"
Mazandrew433, 19 Août 2016

This is a real 'country house' hotel, hidden away down small country lanes with lovely views from the hills towards Exeter. With the aid of our Sat Nav and local signs we found the hotel without difficulty, but as locals told us that some Sat Nav systems struggle in this area, we would recommend consulting a detailed road map before travelling. On arrival the hotel reception staff were friendly and helpful, and we were pleased with our large ensuite bedroom which had a comfortable bed and a spacious bathroom. Although we chose the hotel for its quiet location, we had not realised that it is a very popular wedding venue, so if you stay on a Friday (as we did) and/or a Saturday night, be prepared to encounter a wedding party with all that this might entail (our sleep quality certainly suffered). At breakfast the cooked options were reasonable and promptly served, but otherwise there was little on offer. Overall we enjoyed our stay primarily because of the hotel's lovely location.

"Remote but lovely"
Amanda P, 17 Août 2016

Whilst driving to the hotel I did think my sat nav had gone mad it is remote but has fantastic views and would think it would be brilliant for walkers. The food was outstanding and the restaurant was perfect for a romantic meal. The breakfast was very good although even toast had to be ordered. Downside I was here on business and the Internet connection was awful I had three different ways of getting online and not one worked.

"Superb location, outdated rooms"
cs9252016, 14 Août 2016

The location is one of the strengths of this hotel. The staff were friendly and the rooms were clean. One-two nights stay is ideal, but I would not recommend any more than that, especially during the summer months. The deco in the rooms is outdated, and the biggest issue we experienced were stuffy and overly-warm rooms. I suppose it is a listed building, and as such I appreciate there may be limitations to installing an air conditioning unit. However, we stayed there three nights in August with temperatures between 20-25c outside, and it was unbearably hot inside the rooms. It was impossible to open the window to more than a few inches, and we overheard other guests voicing the same concerns. Having said that, the grounds are well maintained, the hotel has comfortable parking facilities and it is located in a lovely spot amidst great countryside.

"Several visits later and I never want to leave!"
Katherine J, 14 Août 2016

We've been visiting The Lord Haldon for many years now, having planned our own wedding here as well as sharing many special days with other family & friends here since. Yes, the road is narrow to the venue and it isn't easy to find if you've not been in the area before but unsurprisingly, the directions on the website are spot on, so read up before you go! Don't follow your SatNav! Our own wedding in July '14 couldn't have been more perfect! Ruth and her staff were superb and made us feel so welcome for the entire three days we were there. The food was stunning, the rooms were comfortable (although some were warm apparently, but we were spoilt with a mini summer heatwave!) The views and the grounds are breathtaking! We all felt so at home! We have visited a couple of times since to other wedding celebrations and this weekend we were lucky enough to get to stay again. The food, the service (both at the wedding and at breakfast) and the venue were exactly as I remembered from our own wedding. Nothing was too much trouble and I didn't want to leave this morning! If you want a venue for your wedding that is peaceful, personal & professional, look no further! Ruth, we can't wait to get another chance to come and see you all again!

"Comfortable stay"
mikeelstonj, 14 Août 2016

Good accommodation and friendly staff. Very pleasant location. The room I stayed in is one of the older style rooms, but everything worked fine. Curious double shower curtain arrangement either side of bath, but decent shower nevertheless. TV was small by current standards but I see from website that other rooms are more up to date.

"An utter delight"
Ian T, 12 Août 2016

i was lucky enough to get a room in this delightful hotel, i now understand why it is so popular. From arrival to departure I was made to feel like the most important person in the hotel. the level of professionalism of all the staff was extremely high. well worth visiting. one bit of extra advice, follow the hotels directions and not your Sat Nav as some of the roads in the area are very very narrow and i had the hedges hitting both wing mirrors at once

"Motor Club Evening Drive and Meal"
Passp0rtAlwaysReady, 10 Août 2016

Our car club arranged an early evening drive and dine. The dine was at the Lord Haldon. We arrived and the building is hugely impressive and well kept. We had a drink in the sports bar before going into a private room. Waiter / waitress service, three courses and very well Presented and the meal was lovely too. Not huge portions. I had the chicken dish that was lovey. Thank you.

"Great 'non plastic' hotel. Ideal for Exeter business"
Burdieone, 08 Août 2016

Staying in hotels on business is not what it's cracked up to be but staying somewhere like this make you feel more at home. Friendly staff , real ale and good food. I will be staying again. Wonderful views and very quite. Wifi works fine for those must do emails.

"Lovely for a night"
Davidjay64, 07 Août 2016

We were here for a recent wedding and it's a very nice place to get married. The restaurant's a bit pricy but the food on offer is a cut above what you;d normally expect in such a hotel - clearly there's a chef with ambition here. The room was fine, the public areas okay and the gardens are immaculate. What makes this place is the view over the surrounding countryside. I'd happily stay here again.

"Scenic hotel"
Sara D, 03 Août 2016

Beautifully situated hotel with lovely views. We stayed in a "dog friendly" room which was fine - a bit shabby in parts which we expected. Only problem was it was very hot as we suspected there was not a lot of insulation in the room. The staff were incredibly helpful and friendly. The food was okay, nothing special but well presented.

"1 night stay"
Seagulls4, 02 Août 2016

Good hotel with lovely views and lovely area . Bit dated in the dining area but still good value . Nice walks in the area Quite hard (and narrow lanes ! )to find so make sure you have good directions !

"A quiet countryside location - beautiful gardens and dog friendly"
Chris G, 26 Juillet 2016

We found all the staff friendly and very helpful. Service with a smile! As we had our little dog with us arrangements were made for us to have dinner in the bar area and also, a table was set aside for us for breakfast. Food was excellent and real ale was available at the bar. We used the Haldon for a night to break our journey from Windsor to Newquay. Certainly stop there again!

"Demons Hidden Gem"
ISCA13, 24 Juillet 2016

As we drove through the lovely village of Ide heading out into the countryside towards dunchideock until you come to a beautiful thatched cottage on the right where you turn left down the lane towards the hotel and into its grounds where you are greeted with the most amazing view and a lovely old mansion house which is now a best western hotel. We were here for our nephews wedding reception what a fantastic location. The reception staff were very welcoming and we soon checked in to a lovely spacious room with a view over the well laid out gardens. The room was very well decorated and nice bedding. The bars are very nice with a good selection. The wedding reception was very well organised with plenty of staff and the food was first class as was the buffet that was put on in the evening. There is a very nice courtyard in the middle of the hotel where you can sit out side and relax. Breakfast in the morning was really nice with an excellent selection. Now myself and my wife only live about 5 miles away and we knew the hotel was in dunchideock but we have never been here after this visit that will now change we are already planning a return. This is definitely one of the best hotels in Devon in a great location with very friendly staff .

"A Great Country Retreat"
Marcoappraisal, 22 Juillet 2016

The Best Western Lord Haldon Hotel is perfect if you want a quiet country retreat. Despite its size, peace and tranquility is in abundance. Whether it's the generous sized rooms or, the beautiful grounds and setting;,space is not an issue. We didn't eat dinner at the hotel, but the food looks very good. The bed was very comfortable allowing us a great nights, peaceful sleep. Breakfast was generous and tasty. Couldn't ask for more really. We'll definitely come back.

"First class hotal"
Mazo46, 16 Juillet 2016

We stayed for 2 nights for my niece's wedding it was our first time at this hotel and all I can say is it was one of the best hotels We have ever stayed at, the staff are so friendly and make you feel so welcome, the food was first class it was hot and serviced on hot plates which kept the food hotter for longer, the service was also first class, our room was very clean, we had nice big mugs in the room with our tea and coffee making facility the shower was was power shower and believe me it was, and very hot water I did not want to get out, the lady called Ruth who was on hand to help my niece,s wedding run smooth is a credit to the hotel her helpfulness was second to none and I would like to thank her and the rest of the staff for making our stay one the most enjoyable we have ever had.

"Splendid "
Rurapudding, 15 Juillet 2016

Stayed the night due to working in the area , booked a double room on Hotels.com for only £70 which turned out to be a gift ! As you make you way up their driveway without doubt you will feel the need to stop , take a photo and admire the view ! Once in reception staff were very pleasant and quick to get check in done, looking around it was obvious that perhaps before the days of Best Western's ownership that this used to be an extremely grand special place. The bedroom was lovely, comfy bed, blinds with blackout curtains and it's so quiet given the location, the shower was an unusual flower head in the centre of the bath but it worked well with decent pressure. I choose to eat in the bar and watch the footy and as such met Stephen the barman / Waiter and he is just fab, really dry sense of humour , he reminds you of David Warner ( played the man at arms in Titanic) he goes about his job in a highly organised and very polite manner, it was obvious that he has been there for many years and no doubt could tell you facts of the premises former glory. Unfortunately I did not have time for the cooked to order English breakfast, Lovely place, will defiantly stay again , perhaps as a stop on route to Devon / Cornwall

"Peace and quiet"
Micha? ?, 14 Juillet 2016

That location is perfect for restless and bit the stress. Perfect quite and you can heard birds voice. Bed and breakfast is acceptable. Don't use gravel road to hotel because is privet try use normal road but you have to find village first in Google maps.

"Lovely & very peaceful "
Caroline T, 10 Juillet 2016

Only stayed here for one night as a stop off from Cornwall & felt very welcome from the moment we arrived. It is in the middle of the countryside & sits in incredibly quiet & peaceful surroundings. It also sits in pretty gardens & yes, it is an old building with creaky floors but we really liked it. Our room (executive) had a huge comfy bed & was spacious with a large bathroom & shower. Complimentary tea, coffee & biscuits were on offer too. We ate in the restaurant in the evening, staff were friendly & food options plentiful. Breakfast was also good with a selection of fruit, cereal & pastries & an English breakfast cooked to order. We much preferred this hotel to the 4* one we stayed in in Cornwall!

"This time we can relax and enjoy the atmosphere of our friends wedding"
pepper4salt, 08 Juillet 2016

Well again what more can I say accept FANTASTIC. We went to a friends wedding last weekend and this time we could just sit and relax and watch our friends enjoy their day. We had a great room looking over the countryside and the well maintained garden's, it was clean and tidy The food was absolutely brilliant and the staff again couldn't do enough for you the evening do was excellent well organised with so much food. Breakfast was fantastic and freshly cooked. As always I would recommend this hotel to anyone. well worth the money.

"Quiet country location"
Roger O, 03 Juillet 2016

Beautiful quiet country location. We had room 31 which had lovely views of countryside and gardens. We found the hotel very clean even though it is a little dated in places. Food was excellent and staff very helpful and courteous. If you want to get away from all the hustle and bustle of life this is the place for you

"Chilled"
paulw61, 03 Juillet 2016

My partner and I were given a couple of days at the lord Halton as a present. As soon as we arrived we felt relaxed, the setting of the hotel is great no noise fantastic gardens and the room was huge. The staff are great and nothing seems to be to much trouble. A great base to explore Dartmoor.

"Visited a few times always good!"
tr7v8, 23 Juin 2016

Stayed here a few times now. Not the easiest to find as it is down narrow lanes but worthwhile when you get there. A large hotel sitting in quite big grounds with a great view of the south Devon hills. The staff here are always great The room was a reasonable distance down a corridor & was quite large. The gardens are large & I had a wander around before dinner. Dinner was great, they have a good menu & nice food. I slept well in a very comfy bed. The bathroom was big with large corner bath & shower. Breakfast was excellent, cooed to order & was very tasty. My only gripe was the juice glasses were covered in greasy fingerprints, which I pointed out to one of the staff & she dealt with it. But to be honest someone should have looked when they put them out. Check out was painless & I was offered some useful advice on a quicker rout out than using the sat nav which was good.

"To the Manor Born"
Sharon B, 20 Juin 2016

Google maps had us arrive through a very narrow lane but what a lovely surprise once we arrived. It is about 20 minutes out of town but to be able to get away from the rat race was lovely. we had a room over looking the countryside from two windows and the room was huge. The staff from reception through to bar staff were extremely friendly and helpful with any queries we had. Highly recommend this hotel

"Would definitely recommend it"
314Michele39, 19 Juin 2016

What a lovely hotel the staff are very pleasant the rooms are very nice we had a family room and loads of room bathroom is lovely very modern Breakfast is lovely in fact all the food is top notch would have no hesitation on returning to the hotel Ruth is the manager very attentive and makes your stay very enjoyable nothing to much trouble tops marks

"Pleasant But Dated"
Hannahpianaa, 19 Juin 2016

This hotel has so much going for it... Set in beautiful surroundings, it boasts lovely views and a peaceful location. The staff are friendly and very accommodating and the rooms are cleaned to a high standard. In fact the staff were a big part in the positive for this venue. The improvements which good make this hotel amazing? The decor is not only dated, it is the worn, cheap kind of dated (rather than antique) and this hotel building deserves so much better. In the bedrooms you can't help but feel slightly put off by the mismatched old furniture. The bathroom contained some creative plumbing solutions that saw a bath require parallel shower curtains to contain the water?! I would also recommend a new dishwasher for the kitchen too as sadly some of the new breakfast dishes weren't clean from the previous meal. There is nothing here that a little investment and TCL from Best Western couldn't fix, to make this hotel into a top top venue.

"Beautiful location & lovely hotel"
James S, 18 Juin 2016

Have stayed here 5 times now on different occasions, the rooms are lovely and large & well decorated whilst being clean a tidy. The staff have always been increadably polite and helpful at all times, whilst the hotel itself it located in the most beautiful surroundings for a peaceful stay. I would defiantly stay here again when getting away from London

"Not my cup of tea"
Ben V, 15 Juin 2016

This place is set in beautifully maintained grounds with peaceful surroundings. There is nothing that I could say is particularly bad about what the hotel offers. The staff are helpful, the service is great, the food is superb.....but. It's old....the average age of guests seems to be around 60. Floorboards are noisy. It smells a bit musty. My room was clean but unreasonably small. The shower is less powerful than a mouse sneeze. Doesnt have ironing facilities in the rooms. TV is tiny and cheap. Most decore is a bit grandma. Above all, it's just not a place for someone that is a bit younger. I've stayed in older places and loved it. This, though, pretty as the land is, has nothing that wows. It's all a bit vanilla.

"Overnight wedding stay"
Rachel O, 14 Juin 2016

Lovely setting. Very helpful and friendly staff. Comfortable room with good sized bathroom (shower over bath). Beautiful views. Very pleasant grounds. Breakfast was plentiful and filling. Cooked breakfasts to order ( busy - rather slow service). Would enjoy a longer stay.

"Lovely location"
Sarah W, 09 Juin 2016

We stayed here for 1 night. The hotel was comfortable and the rooms were well equipped, although the floor boards creaked a lot. We had a standard full English breakfast. It's in a stunning location off the beacon track but easy to find and easy to access.

"We'd recommend"
Picpoul, 03 Juin 2016

Stayed with friends on half term break. Well off the beaten track but worth the effort. Ideal for touring but you'll probably need a car, and clearly popular as wedding and conference venue due to lovely grounds, historic building and very good service. Rooms good size and many with panoramic views. Well appointed though shower in middle of bath a novelty. Very good fresh prepared breakfast and huge portion dinners ( don't go for three courses unless starved) Not the most high class, but cooked well and good selection. Wine list a bit limited though ladies enjoyed the Sauvignon. Hotel does not offer other stuff - gym, pool etc but you shouldn't miss it. Off peak and mid week prices very good value and would recommend to others.

"Stunning location. Extremely Quite."
Mark A, 03 Juin 2016

We stayed here for a short break to Devon. The location is stunning and quiet. Do not expect too much from this hotel. It is simply rooms and food but we enjoyed it. The only downside is that the floorboards squeak and the walls are thin. We could hear the chap coughing in the room above us, talking in the next room and when someones alarm went off at 5am my wife and I both shot up in bed. Breakfast is good, fruit, yogurt, cooked breakfast etc. Whilst there is no pool or gym there is an excellent route for a run, just ask reception for the directions. The rooms are spotlessly clean, bed comfortable but the pillows were hard for me. I am sure the hotel would have change it had I asked but I was not that too fussed.

"A hideaway gem"
Victoria P, 31 Mai 2016

Booked last minute as unexpectedly and was not disappointed. After a lovely drive down little country lanes you arrive at the hotel, it feels like your miles away from anywhere, such a tranquil setting with great views. Lovely room, everything you need and very tastefully decorated (recent I assume as still smell of paint). Breakfast very good, choice of cereal, fruits, pastries and a hot breakfast cooked to order. All the staff friendly and professional. I highly recommend this hotel and will book again next time we are visiting the area.

"Lord Haldon. Ide near Exeter"
stevecastle64, 27 Mai 2016

Lovely hotel and grounds. Ideal for weddings, Great location if you want peace and quiet. Service in th bar and restaurant was very good. The restaurant menu is varied and interesting woth daily specials. Overall another good hotel to add to my favourites

"Fantastic gem with outstanding service from the staff"
CRG-Sent, 22 Mai 2016

Ruth and her team went way beyond my expectations. I can recommend it to anyone, I have no doubt you will have a good stay. They got me to where I needed to get to without any fuss in a relaxed and calm manner.

"Delightful, Relaxing Hotel"
Susan W, 18 Mai 2016

I am a single business women who stays in hotels frequently and found this hotel safe and welcoming. This hotel is set in some fabulous scenery and is nice and quite. Slightly off the beaten track, but I like this. Room was modern, clean and we'll decorated. Bed was extremely comfortable and I had a fabulous view over looking the courtyard. What I really enjoyed was the food. The restaurant staff were very friendly and attentive and the 2 courses I had to eat were by far some of the best I have eaten whilst staying away for work. Would throughly recommend this hotel to anyone for business or pleasure, quite comfortable and relaxing.

"Reunion with old friends"
rogert607, 17 Mai 2016

A friend made the booking from Australia on very favourable terms and we shared a very comfortable triple room. The hotel is in a beautiful location, with lovely grounds and wonderful views. The public areas are very comfortable and well decorated. We had a full English breakfast on two occasions and it was excellent. There is also plenty of parking. The staff were very pleasant and helpful.

"Beautiful location, really helpful staff, nice rooms, great price and great food...."
DMVEAL, 09 Mai 2016

I had to arrange accomodation for a confernece and chose this place based on a recommendation. From the start Tom was really helpful with the booking and made it suit our needs not theirs which is great. He listened and when we arrived reception was well aware and prepared for us so check in was smooth. I love my room. It was large and a huge bed and double size walk in shower with a great shower. Great views from windown and nicely decorated. Big TV and had iron and ironing board as well as a hair dryer. Tea and coffee well stocked ( think more local biscuits would be nice though as a nice touch). Had a lovely dinner and my steak was cooked to my requested choice. Loved the scallops and the pud....serving staff lovely and again helful and the man who has worked there many years gave us some backgorund stories that made it fun and personal. Check out simple and breakfast was very very good ( well done kitchen staff as you should be proud of your work and not forgotten). I guess the only question is why not 5 out of 5 and as I gave 4. Well its not location, history or people. Just felt the decor downstairs needed a bit of a freshen up generally although bedrooms are fine. Back in October so get your paint brushes ready... Thankyou though as the staff and food are the heart of a good hotel and they did not disapoint. Would have been 4.5 if that was an option.

"Leisure break"
Robin W, 30 Avril 2016

This is the third time we have stayed at this hotel. The location is very good - rural with great views but is very conveniently situated being only 5 miles from Exeter. The staff are always very friendly and helpful. There are no ground floor rooms which can be an issue for disabled people.

"A bit out of the way but good."
John V, 28 Avril 2016

The hotel is a little out of the way and if you follow a Satnav it can take you via a very narrow road route with very few, if any, passing places so I would strongly recommend heeding the route advised by the Hotel. However once there the views are great as you are quite high up in the hills and the peace and quiet is nice and relaxing. The rooms are good with what you would expect provided and the food I had was very good with quite a good choice. If I had a grouse it was with the wifi strength in my room which was poor, perhaps this could be addressed.

"Pleasant"
toriaw2015, 25 Avril 2016

A very slow running hotel during our stay but pleasant. This may have been due to a wedding reception. Room very spacious as was bathroom but the bathroom was in need of a bit of modernisation though perfectly clean Weird to have 2 x poles holding bath curtain and shower in centre of bath. I'm not big but the shower curtain stuck to me which wasn't pleasant. Food very nice but not exceptional and all staff very obliging and polite. Breakfast perfectly adequate and the choice good

"Lovely hotel in a beautiful location"
Andy F, 21 Avril 2016

I was met by 5 small deer in the car park which for a bloke from a big city was pretty weird! The hotel itself is beautiful, the rooms are spacious with the staff being very welcoming and helpful. The food in bar was very nice with the barman in-particular being very chatty and friendly with everyone. I will definitely be staying here again next time I am in the area.

"Enjoyable Stay"
J S M, 18 Avril 2016

We spent three nights at this hotel and would return again. The staff were helpful and friendly, the service good and the food very enjoyable. The hotel is what it says a country hotel, in the heart of the Devon countryside, but with lovely views over open country and not far from main roads.

"Lovely hotel"
Sue20, 18 Avril 2016

This hotel is in a superb setting and still keeps its olde world charm. Staff were all very helpful and couldnt do enough for us. We had a meal in the restaurant which was excellent, as was the breakfast.

"Lovely Hotel In A Fab Location"
Georgie57, 17 Avril 2016

Really pleased to find this lovely Hotel, fantastic views over the countryside and very peaceful especially after a long day at work ! Staff were very pleasant and helpful, room spacious and very comfortable. Menu varied, plumped for the lamb with was really tasty. Freshly cooked breakfast, always a plus and a good Continental choice too. I will return.

"Nice Location"
424stevem, 08 Avril 2016

Access to the hotel is via country lanes, some single track, and is remotely situated. Good reception upon arrival. Had a room overlooking the central courtyard which was fine. Average bathroom with all usual amenities. Has a smallish bar which was fine. Food to a good standard in the restaurant. Service from all staff was good in all areas. Free Wi-Fi available which was generally good (only very few connection problems). Thought the DB&B rate to be extremely reasonable (stayed Sun-Wed)

"Another amazing stay"
Darby2105, 04 Avril 2016

Stayed for a Golden Wedding celebration. The hotel staff could not have been more helpful particularly Ruth , the manager and especially Maggie the Deputy Manager. The celebration dinner was superb with a lovely decorated table. They made a special effort to ensure the happy couple had an amazing time. The rooms were spacious and furnished with everything we needed. We had lively views over the countryside.

"Lovely hotel and location"
TheBlythes, 04 Avril 2016

We arrived on Friday afternoon and checked in to our beautiful family room. We then spent a lovely afternoon in Dawlish and returned to the hotel for a meal Unfortunately, because of a wedding taking place, there was no food being served. This wouldn't have been an issue if we had been informed of this at check in. We had two tired hungry children and had to venture out again....never a good thing. On the Saturday we were attending a wedding and the reception was held in the hotel. We woke up to find there was no hot water. These things happen, but there was absolutely no communication from the staff....no letter slipped under the door. I found out from another person within our party. We were given a discount for this problem but I was advised of the discount by another person - when we checked out there was no mention of the money taken off and no apology. I was surprised. The wedding reception was wonderful and food very nice. Breakfast was of a good standard. I really did enjoy my stay here but it was the lack of communication on the food and hot water situations that let it down.

"An OK long weekend with a few hiccups"
Steven V, 28 Mars 2016

We stayed here as part of a wedding party taking place on the Saturday. There were 15 of us. We arrived on the Friday as some of us traveled quite a way to the wedding unfortunately we were told that evening that there would be no dinners served due to another wedding being hosted that evening. A pain because some of us then had to travel into Exeter (5 miles) for some food. The next morning when everyone was planning on getting ready for the wedding there was no hot water. This was reported to reception who informed us that the emergency immersion heater had been activated but with everyone in the hotel trying to shower or bath this really didn't work. A discount was given on the room charge for that night, for the inconvenience. The next night the same problem happened with the dinner... Another wedding party so again, no dinner. It's a shame because i have stayed here on a few occasions before and it's always been very good.

"Lovely hotel, friendly and helpful; staff"
payne9429, 16 Mars 2016

I have stayed at this hotel on numerous occasions and have always found it to be first-rate ; very good, clean and comfortable rooms, splendid restaurant and most helpful and welcoming staff led by a first-class manager, Ruth. Warmly recommended.

"Possible wedding venue some flaws"
Helen K, 16 Mars 2016

So this is how it went. We'd met with the hotel twice and were more than happy with the venue, but we wanted something a little more laid back than a 3 course meal so we needed to check with the wedding manager. We were quite hopeful and thinking we'd put down a deposit. Then the meeting occurred and the pitch for our business was so poor that we thought the following constructive comments would be useful. Please.... 1. Listen to the customer 2. Don't keep them waiting without an apology 3. Do prep what day the wedding is before the meeting 4. If you are going to congratulate them on the wedding and comment on the ring do remember what finger and hand the ring is usually on. Hint the ring on the right hand is not the engagement ring. 5. Don't advise the customer to change the time of the wedding to the morning when they have already stated they have booked an afternoon wedding. Reasoning from hotel was that we would have more time with your guests (aka spend more at the hotel) 6. Do work with the customer to get them to spend over the min rather than blatantly saying we need you to spend a certain amount. 7. Do give clear pricing for Saturday weddings in summer season on your website. But hey this probably won't be taken on board as the hotel get 70+ weddings a year. So they are doing something right. But if you did make these small changes think how much more business you would win. Yes it is the wedding business but we are still human beings and a bit of decent selling and service should come as standard when you're looking to spend thousands. Wishing you a successful season.

"My Daughters Wedding."
alan b, 12 Mars 2016

The Lord Haldon is a great venue for weddings, The views are great, and the rooms are comfortable, aThe staff went out of their way to help us, and I must single out for praise Ruth, not forgetting Tom for the smooth running of the wedding it wet without a hitch.

"Our wedding day"
Katehenson, 05 Mars 2016

We had our wedding at the Lord haldon hotel on 30th January 2016. From the first time we went and met Ruth and Maggie a year before to look at the venue through to the morning after our wedding was fantastic. All the staff were lovely, attentive and helpful. We had meetings leading up to the months before our wedding, food tasting to choose our menu and any question I had was promptly answered either on the phone or by email. We met Lauren our wedding coordinator a week before the wedding to bring all our decorations etc up. She was fantastic. Such a lovely girl and so personable. I left it all In her hands and everything was set up as I had imagined with no stress from me! Unfortunately Ruth couldn't be there on our wedding day but her and Maggie were fantastic in the run up to it. On the day we arrived very early for hair and make up and had bacon sandwiches, tea and coffee and water brought up to us. Lauren took care about of everything, checking my husband was ok when he arrived, that everything was on schedule and that I wasn't too late! The food was fantastic, really delicious and well presented and the drinks were of a great quality too. The wait staff were attentive and quick when bringing out the meals. All our guests that stayed overnight said how lovely their rooms were, spacious and comfortable and our honeymoon suite was amazing! We felt it was a shame we were just spending 1 night there sleeping and didn't make use of the amazing large shower and jacuzzi type bath. All in all everyone of our guests was complimentary, not a thing went wrong and we had the best day we could have possibly imagined! Thankyou so much :) Kate and Alex Henson Xx

"A return that did not disapoint"
Mark L, 04 Mars 2016

I have now stayed at this hotel on 3 occasions this year, and it is only the beginning of March. I stay in many hotels throughout the country for work, and without doubt this is one of the best. The service is great, the hotel itself is marvelous. The rooms are very well appointed and the food is great. Beware the portions are large. One that I will return to again and again.

"Stunning Surroundings"
Roy A, 02 Mars 2016

Worth travelling 350 miles for. Despite the elegant nature of the building, the staff were not stuffy and were extremely helpful and efficient. Dinner and breakfast were of excellent quality at a reasonable price. Very comfortable traditional rooms with good soundproofing. All in all a very enjoyable and peaceful break.

"Enjoyable short stay"
Alan M, 02 Mars 2016

Purchased a winter deal for two nights Sunday and Monday. Executive room lovely, really nice touch with fresh fruit, fudge and strawberries dipped in chocolate on arrival, with a selection of soft drinks. Staff very helpful and friendly especially the bar/waiters

"Excellent stay"

Stayed this week, the staff were extremely helpful and very friendly. The room was spotlessly clean and very nice, had huge bathroom. We had dinner and breakfast and the food was excellent. Would definitely stay again, we have holiday accommodation in Cornwall and know what today's guests like and we would happily recommend this hotel.

"Birthday treat"
Kym_and_Garry, 19 Février 2016

Stayed here for my fiancée's birthday. Nice hotel, nice comfy bed. Great service at dinner and breakfast. Only problem was the room next door had a shower at 630am and woke us up. Apart from that, it was a lovely nights stay. Would visit again.

"Lovely relaxing break"
sulkydame, 18 Février 2016

Another visit here - this time as a stop over on our way down to Cornwall. Nice big room, large comfy bed, warm and cosy. Good dinner and lush pudding that looked stunning! Beautiful, peaceful location. Great, friendly and professional staff. Really interesting history too, if you like that sort of thing! I do. Would definitely visit again. Thank you.

"Lovely hotel"
CarolineS2003, 12 Février 2016

My husband said Best Western are very good so I booked this hotel, staying with my teenage daughter. We both loved the hotel and the service was excellent. The evening meal was fantastic. Will definitely go to a Best Western hotel again.

"Lovely traditional hotel"
sianyfish, 04 Février 2016

Excellent place to stay, beautiful surroundings, nice rooms. Very attentive, professional staff who genuinely care about their guests. Food was delicious. If I was working in the area again I would choose to stay here, particularly if I could get the same, very cheap deal.

"Another great visit"
Mark L, 30 Janvier 2016

I have stayed at this hotel on quite a number of occasions and have never been let down. A real country idyll set in the Devon countryside you are always assured of a friendly welcome. The rooms are well appointed, large, spacious and good modern bathrooms. The food is great, with the same menu available in either the bar or the restaurant, so you can choose where to eat. I will return again soon.

"Lord haldon"

Great hotel interesting location, James in the restaurant was great made us feel very welcome, rooms were good and good value especially on the winter offers, mattress was a bit hard but ok, facilities were spotless bath room was fantastic, had a king deluxe room, recommend this hotel.

"My review"
Mark A, 26 Janvier 2016

If you want remote location away from noise this is the ideal place to stay food excellent staff friendly and helpful rooms clean and tidy choice of 2 bars on the negative side there is nothing to do here unless you like walking or hiking or riding s bike more could be done with the space they have

"SECOND STAY AT THE BEST HOTEL SO FAR IN EXETER"
pepper4salt, 21 Janvier 2016

Again what can I say both my husband and myself stayed last Friday night since our wedding last Sept. we were in another great room with lovely views looking out from the side and the front of the hotel. Our evening meal was fantastic and the service was the same. We were greated by Ruth and Lauren when we arrived and were again treated like we were the only ones there. The hotel was not that busy and there was a small wedding going on but that did not stop the staff etc. from being friendly professional. In the morning we had a full english breakfast which again was not disappointing with toast and help yourself to cereals all again with excellent service. Can't wait to go back again hopefully soon. We are staying there again in July as we are going to a friends wedding reception so if we don't get there before it is something to look forward too

"A haven!"
Jakki C, 21 Janvier 2016

Very nice old Manor House way out in the countryside. A lovely peaceful hotel in acres of land. Superb food rooms very nice but windows need replacing a bit draughty! About 5 miles from Exeter but traffic very heavy took ages to get into the Town. However we would definitely visit again probably in the Summer. The staff were lovely.

"Very nice place"
WitSka, 06 Janvier 2016

Nice, quiet hotel in fantastical the of England. I visited it twice first time in October and in December. Friendly staff and good quality food. Excellent place for ramblers, cyclists and runners. Only 2 miles to Haldon Forest Park with unforgettable trials. Breathtaking views.

"What a great place to spend Christmas"
David C, 29 Décembre 2015

We stayed at The Lord Haldon Country Hose Hotel for a two night break over Christmas and we were more than happy with our choice. When we arrived on Christmas Eve afternoon we were greeted by the receptionist who had everything ready for us. Our room was pleasant, with a large en-suite, and with ample storage facilities, tv and tea/coffee making facilities. We were welcomed to the hotel with tea and mince pies. A very nice touch. Our evening meal was sumptuous with very high quality service. However this was surpassed by the quality and quantity of our Cristmas day lunch. Our wine was on the high end of the price range, but did not disappoint. Another nice touch was a small box of chocolates and a Chrstmas card being placed in our room by the cleaners on Christmas morning. There is ample parking at the hotel and extensive grounds in which to walk off the excess of food. A great place to spend Christmas.

Country house hotel, very rural with a network of narrow lanes to negotiate to get there. Very comfortable large old house which allows you to take your dog??. Lovely Christmas lunch but all meals were excellent, plenty of choice with lots of fresh vegetables, really friendly and attentive staff, nothing too much trouble - what more can I say? Our room, number 12, had no view from the window but that didn't seem to matter, everything else was great. Thank you.

"Amazing Christmas break"
Pollyanna2013, 26 Décembre 2015

Just stayed at the Lord Haldon hotel in Dunchideock for 5 nights , it was wonderful. Fabulous food, ambience and the staff couldn't do enough for you. The team is lead by Ruth and she ensures that every guest has the best experience, nothing is too much trouble , she adds the personal touch to the whole experience. Christmas Day and evening was the best I've had , five star service and again a lovely happy experience. Thankyou Ruth and the Lord Haldon team and we will be back again soon xxx

"Super Staff"
Ted S, 23 Décembre 2015

The staff really made our pre Christmas get together memorable. Our Candle lit family dinner was lovely. Fresh not frozen veggies and loads of them, served by James and Katie with nothing too much trouble. A lovely evening. Our dear little grandson who has special needs told Ruth, one of the managers how he wanted to see some bats and she was very kind and told him where the bats lived. He said he was saving them some of his bread roll. When we came for breakfast, there were bags of sweeties for the three children on the table and a card from the bats wishing him a merry Christmas from the Haldon bats with cut out pictures of bats on it. What a kind thing to bother to do. This is the third time we have stayed and each time we have been impressed with the extras the staff do. It's also a lovely place in a beautiful area.

"Great"
anne h, 15 Décembre 2015

I stay at this hotel for 2-3 nights every 5-6 weeks, the staff are very accommodating, nothing is too much trouble. I mentioned on my last visit that they did a beautiful mushroom soup and the next night they got the chef to make it. It's old, it's creaky, it's wonderful. A few things need updating but that just adds to the character for me. As I've said nothing is too much trouble for them, they are all great, they know who I am what room I like, even down to what drink I like. The views are amazing, it's in the middle of nowhere and try not to follow your sat nav as it will take you up some very narrow lanes. Highly recommended this hotel. Anne

"Great country location but handy for Exeter"
Ann_459, 15 Décembre 2015

A nice building in a lovely location but still handy for Exeter. Large car park. My room was quite small but I was glad they put me where I was because it was okay despite there being noisy corporate function on (I was not warned about this at the time of booking). I was woken by fireworks but other than that it was not too bad. I only used the room facilities - comfortable bed, bathroom clean, as expected really. Access: look at a map and plan to access the hotel (by car) from the Dunchideok side not the Clapham side as the track from there is long with lots of potholes.

"Just returned from a delightful time here!"
theresalwaysone, 13 Décembre 2015

This hotel has the best staff I have eve come across! Lauren was amazing- so helpful and quietly going about the organising of a wedding I was at that everything ran on oiled wheels! Nothing was too much trouble. Things happened without you having to even ask as the staff noticed anything that was required and stepped in to do whatever was necessary. I can't praise them highly enough. The rooms were comfortable and warm and the location of the hotel is amid glorious countryside- some very tiny lanes to drive down on your way there! You felt as if if you were in a haven of peaceful fields and woods. The food was superb, served hot and very plentiful, with many carefully cooked vegetables. Staff asked if everything was ok and happily brought more gravy etc. the dessert was a feast on the eyes as well as the stomach- what a delight! Anyone would have a lovely break from a busy world here.

"Great Country Hotel"
jamesandkate111, 06 Décembre 2015

Situated in the country with great views, this is a fine hotel in all respects, good food, staff and lovely setting, the building is charming with history. The bar is the weak area with no character, but overall a good hotel that wont disappoint.

"Outstanding service"
Chil1976, 06 Décembre 2015

I recently visited the Lord Haldon for the first time for a Christmas party and was not disappointed. Local to Exeter, the hotel is beautifully appointed overlooking gorgeous hillside views. Our room was great, again with lovely views, decorated well and very clean with a lovely powerful shower! The event itself was facilitated brilliantly by Lauren and her team, nothing was too much trouble. Waiting on staff were polite and helpful, food was great, bar and reception staff friendly. There was a great choice of food at breakfast too. Would highly recommend.

"Peaceful Country House Break"
Roy A, 04 Décembre 2015

Beautiful building with interesting history set in stunning rolling countryside. Reception and restaurant staff were extremely friendly and efficient,as were the cleaners. Long trip but well worth it.

"Beautiful hotel, beautiful setting "
Darby2105, 03 Décembre 2015

Lovely drive through the Devonshire countryside brings you to this gem in the country. Very grand looking hotel with pretty arched courtyard overlooking the countryside opposite. Checking was very efficient and friendly. We ate and used the lounge bar both of which were excellent. Rooms were very comfortable with tv, tea/coffee making facilities. We'll equipped spacious bathroom. Extremely good service from all the staff who made you feel at home.

"Lovely weekend break"
Alison U, 29 Novembre 2015

Just returned home after a 2 night stay at the Lord Haldon. The staff were really helpful and friendly, and this was genuinely a really dog friendly hotel. Our 2 spaniels had a lovely time and felt truly welcome. We ate at the hotel on our first night and were joined by other family members and we all really enjoyed our meals. I had the lamb and mint pie which was delicious! The grounds were exceptional and the whole place was really festive with lovely Christmas decorations and lights. We will definitely visit again.

"Short weekend stay"
Tracey D, 23 Novembre 2015

Had a lovely stay over the weekend. Very quiet and relaxing. It is a little dated but it is an old building and would be spoilt if it was modernised. Our room was nice and warm, comfortable bed, tv and tea and coffee facilities. We ate in the restaurant both evenings, menu caters for everyone, very well presented. The sweet selection was slightly limited, could do a bit more selection although the 'orange elephant' ice cream and sorbet was very good. Breakfast was good, would of liked some different pastries. The lady and man that served in the evening mostly were excellent, nothing was too much trouble and so friendly. A real asset to the hotel. Definitely would like to visit again in the new year.

"Well-run, character hotel in rural location"
Howard W, 23 Novembre 2015

Stayed for 2 nights in a family room at the Lord Haldon during November. The hotel itself is situated in a rural location, quiet and well off the beaten track, yet only 6 miles from the city of Exeter. You wouldn't say that the hotel was modern, it's quite an old building, but it does have character and seems to be well decorated and maintained. The room was very clean, the beds comfortable, bathroom quite spacious but a little on the cold side (the only heating in the bathroom was from the heated towel rail). We found the staff to be very friendly and helpful, especially the bar/restaurant staff, and this made our stay really. We ate in the bar on both nights of our stay and the food was well prepared, nicely presented and tasty. Overall, we were very happy with our stay and will probably return.

"Food Poisoning and Slamming Doors"
Kubda301, 18 Novembre 2015

When checking in we requested a room far from the wedding party and were assured that the wedding was at the other side of the hotel. Imagine our surprise to be placed next to the bride and groom's room which seemed to be used for a transit site, doors loudly slamming from about 10:15 PM to 3 AM..... this after my traveling companion was dreadfully and repeatedly sick after eating at the hotel restaurant. Hotel staff was totally dismissive, saying that they had served a good deal of food the night before without others having a problem.

"lovely place to stay"
frank r, 18 Novembre 2015

Just back from a for night stop at this hot are that had been booked for me by my work. The staff are very welcoming .They have a nice bar area and restaurant with good staff who do a really good job. The rooms are basic but very nice and the beds are really good (what you need mostly),The grounds are lovely and well kept, they also had christmas decorations up with the lights which made it look extra special .The only draw back was the lane that leads to the hotel ( not bad if you like rally driving ) they are a bit on the narrow side ,.I would not be put off this hotel by that if i was asked to work in this area again .Real nice place to stay.

"Lovely Hotel"
Melenee P, 17 Novembre 2015

Nice hotel, staff are very helpful and friendly. Be mindful the roads are a little curvy and tight in places, but it's fun getting there! Bedrooms are clean and tidy, but like most BW hotels they are not as modern as other hotels - but hey that's what makes them BW

"3 Star Hotel with a 5 Star Service"
Dee_McKibbin, 17 Novembre 2015

This is what I wrote to the GM of the hotel following our stay on Friday 13th November - I think it says it all: Dear General Manager (apologies I don't know your name), I have just returned from a weekend away and that first night stay was at your hotel and I simply had to give you feedback as I know now important it is to know when you are doing something right and when something is going wrong. Well I really cannot express how “right” your team at the Lord Haldon Hotel are doing it! As you may guess from my job title I deal with Hotels and travel daily and often in the 4 or 5 star rating and on a personal level I also travel constantly with my little shih tzu looking for nice hotels to stay in that are dog friendly so have good knowledge and experience in this industry. From the first email enquiry to the moment we left we felt like VIPs. Your Duty Manager Tom's professionalism and customer service is second to none. It felt like he had pulled out all the stops for us, going that extra mile on everything from offering drinks in our room on arrival and specially sourcing some local Scrumpy which my husband was delighted with and ensuring our dinner was booked as needed and just generally informative and helpful. As I say, before we had even stepped foot in the door we felt looked after and were really looking forward to our stay. The day before we were due to arrive we had another email just re-confirming the details and arrangements which again reassured us that everything was going to plan. The personal approach and attention to detail was amazing. When we arrived the service did not change as we were checked in, which was nice, fast and easy we were even wished a Happy Anniversary, so clearly Tom had ensured all his team were aware of our special day. The room we stayed in was lovely and clean, the drinks, complimentary brownies, chocs, fruits and soft drinks were very welcoming. In the evening we had booked dinner in the hotel and normally being with a dog often a hotel can make you feel like a second class citizen but not at your hotel! We had a fantastic table in the bar/lounge area which was within a stunning alcove beautifully lit with Christmas garlands and the table was laid like a five star restaurant with candles, flowers and even table crystals so we literally felt like royalty rather than the dark dingy corner we would normally get allocated! To top that we also had one of the loveliest waiters, James, he was so friendly both to us and to our dog (whom is my baby!) so that made me so happy to have him pay attention to him also! The service was fantastic, they warned there could be a delay as everything is freshly cooked when we checked in but the service was prefect, not too fast and not too slow and the food was amazing. So amazing that we simply didn't have room for desert but still we were presented with this lovely plate with chocolate writing on saying “Happy Anniversary” and a selection of mini deserts. As requested by myself, Tom found the perfect moment to come and say hello with his little dog who was the sweetest pup and I was able to have a little cuddle and we had a little natter about dogs and he was as welcoming in real life as he was on email and the phone. During our meal our waiter James even asked if we would like the same table for breakfast and when we came down the next morning there was the table nicely laid with a little Reserved signed on for us again feeling so special. The ladies that were doing breakfast were again so smiley and polite and the service was excellent. Hotel breakfasts are often a little dubious but this breakfast was delicious…..you can't always tell when its going to be a great breakfast and I believe that is when the toast comes out hot! A very rare thing in a hotel! There were even little marmite pots with the jam which again is a little extra most hotels don't bother with and the selection of juices was endless. As you can tell, we really cannot rate your hotel team enough. I can only assume your 3 stars are due to the actual hotel building but even that which we saw was of course only our lovely bedroom and the bar/lounge area etc which was lovely and particularly stunning with the Christmas lights. The service your team provide is a very warm and welcoming 5 stars without a doubt…..I've stayed in lots of 5 stars hotel and I have never felt as welcomed and looked after. In addition and what was so refreshing was to find a hotel that was actually “Dog friendly” unlike many hotels that advertise as “dog friendly” but should advertise as “will put up with your dog as we have to”. Needless to say, we will be coming back without a doubt, my husband seems to have decided that this is now going to be our anniversary treat though I have said to him….we will be coming back more often than once a year or that anniversary will be questionable! ? In all seriousness, I wanted to ensure I wrote to whomever had employed the team at The Lord Haldon as people with a real customer care attitude and genuine love for working in the service industry are hard to find. Often you can tell they are there to make some money and don't love their job at all, however at your hotel I did not feel that at all, they felt like a family and happy to be doing whatever they were doing for us which was lovely. When I get a moment I will be adding these types of comments to every review website I can, although I am not sure I want everyone to know this best kept secret! Kindest regards, Dee (Gerry, my husband & our dog Paddy!)

"Nice place but"
Laura B, 29 Octobre 2015

This hotel has a welcoming reception and the views are lovely. I can imagine it was be a lovely place to chill in the summer. The reception does smell a little musty and has no lift but the porter took my bags to my room. The room was grand but I was wakened in the middle of the night by the rattling window. I had to get up and stuff paper into it to stop it. And I was already wearing earplugs. As I said I'm sure it's nice in the summer.

"A quiet break"
James C, 28 Octobre 2015

Set in very photogenic grounds with pleasing views, I imagine the hotel does well from weddings. It's off the beaten track so be prepared for some reversing up nearby lanes when you meet another car or tractor coming the other way! The outside and courtyard is very attractive. Inside looks a little dated. The staff were very helpful and welcoming however. We had a family room which was large and had a proper single bed for our son. Bizarrely, the tiny TV is mounted in a corner behind curtains in a position at the sidewhere it's impossible to watch from the main bed as you might expect to do if you have a child with you. The basin (in our room) was not in the bathroom which is strange. The old white mdf units clashing with the dark wood effect mdf furniture in the rest of the room. WiFi is patchy and non-existent in our room which we found irritating. Breakfast was excellent and service was good. Possibly the best poached eggs I've had.

"stress free break"
phil352, 27 Octobre 2015

lovely location staff cannot do enough to ensure you enjoy your stay good food well cooked and presentented. a wedding happened on 2 nights of our stay but they went out of the way to make sure we where happy and not inconvinenced by the events

"Nice stay"
Susan A, 20 Octobre 2015

Tom on the front desk was extremely helpful and definitely made our stay a good experience. The hotel is conveniently near Exeter but as it is out in the countryside you need to drive to go to any shops or pubs.

"Unexpected pleasure"
James P, 18 Octobre 2015

I went to the Lord Haldon with fairly low expectations. Not because of the hotel itself but best westerns inconsistent standards. However, the standards of this hotel were fantastic. I arrived for a family birthday meal where I was met with a huge genuine smile by Lauren and Zoe. We had a fantastic meal cooked by chef Mel, who catered for us as well as a large wedding. Service was great hotel was clean and furnishings a good standard. The location beautiful. I cannot recommend this place highly enough.

"Total comfort"
Kim W, 13 Octobre 2015

We found this location by chance at the last minute. What a wonderful surprise. Since we had only one night here and we were quite tired from a very long drive, we only needed a clean, comfy place to rest. It was well above our expectations. The room was very clean, the bed was very large and so comfy that sleep was truly restful. The staff was very helpful and welcoming. The location was a little challenging so don't rely on sat nav. (We called for better directions.)The grounds were beautiful and homey and the breakfast was delicious. It felt like we were guests in a wonderful, large home. I would love to return and spend a bit more time exploring.

"Second visit this year!"
clarkey-worcs, 12 Octobre 2015

What do I love about this hotel.....the location for a start of, in the middle of nowhere, lovely if you want to get away from it all. The staff, they really cant do enough to help you and they don`t look down your nose at you. The food...really great "normal" food, reasonably priced. Drinks, also reasonably priced for a hotel. That its down to earth... you feel comfortable there. The chintzy bits, yes love those too, even though I am not a chintzy person. If this hotel were nearer to home, I would book myself in once a month. That`s how much I love it and I am lucky enough to have been to a LOT of different hotels all over the world. We will re visit again in the future.

"Pleasant location - somewhat dated in places "
sdcsmith2000, 10 Octobre 2015

Came with friends, it's certainly off the beaten track but satnav will get you there Friendly welcome, rooms are reasonably well appointed for the money but dated in some areas - generally the waiting staff seemed a little reserved and not very engaged. The food was quite pricey for what it was Would I come again / recommend, yes but with some reservations

"Very nice hotel"
kb1609, 09 Octobre 2015

My partner had business at Exeter so I decided to accompany him. After a long journey we arrived in the brilliant sunshine, the surrounding countryside is very lovely. Reception was very efficient but friendly. We went up to our room which was modern with exposed brick and lovely comfy bed, very impressed with the room and the bathroom was a big size. Breakfast in the morning was very efficient and friendly and was delicious, and not a speak of grease to be found. You were given piles of different toasts and a circular fried slice, lovely. We were offered more tea and coffee. Apart from our newspaper was forgotten we enjoyed this hotel very much.

"best "best western"...."
Nigel W, 06 Octobre 2015

As you go down the driveway the view is fantastic, and the hotel just looks perfect. Our standard room had decent view (I guess most do) and was small but clean. In fact the whole place was well cared for, especially the gardens ( they do lots of weddings here, and you should expect to hear the music. Only reason I didn't give it 5 stars is the breakfast muzac was 1960 s pop. Buddy Holly at breakfast is just wrong!!!

"Enjoyable Evening"
Alan M, 30 Septembre 2015

Stayed in an executive room with stunning views. The room faciities were excellent, you hardly wanted to leave it.Fresh fruit and bottled soft drinks and the most delicious chocolate brownies were provided. Evening meal was of excellent quality and staff very polite and friendly,

"WHAT MORE CAN YOU SAY IT WAS SIMPLY THE BEST"
pepper4salt, 29 Septembre 2015

We were recommended this venue for our wedding which was the best choice out of a lot of venues we had visited, we really wished we had seen it first as the venue was spot on. From begining to end we were treated like royalty as we were the only people who were there. I stayed there with some of my family the night before the rooms were excellent, clean, spacious & comfortable beds, food was really good and the grounds were absolutely lovely. As for the wedding day itself well what a day to remember, food was out of this world everyone commented on how good it was all staff members could not do enough for us. We are just so glad we chose this venue and we will recommend this place to everyone even if they just want somewhere nice and quiet to stay.

"Far away, and close to town"
umbria_10, 24 Septembre 2015

We live in town, and wanted to be away in the country. That's what this hotel provides you. The setting has an interesting historical background, a lot to find out and understand. Most of all it is relaxed, yet professional. We were charmed by a Yorkshire girl Sam. Who brought back memories of a garçon in Paris, serving us in Le Vaudeville. It is the personal touch that we like about Best Western. We call it: local charm!

"One night stay"
Linda I, 19 Septembre 2015

Nice welcome, friendly and helpful staff. Good clean and comfortable bedroom with beautiful views. Evening meal and breakfast nicely cooked with generous portions. Waiting staff friendly and attentive. Large car park.
