"Ashland stay"

Great location, friendly staff. The front desk clerk remembered me from past stays and had me checked in as soon as I approached the desk. Wonderful view of the lake. Molly's restaurant has great food. I do miss the fresh fruit salad they used to serve at breakfast.

Beautiful hotel gracefully restored. Probably best place to stay in Ashland. We enjoyed just hanging out at the hotel, dinner out on deck which was very good, and watching sunset with a glass of wine. Very relaxing. Don't expect rooms to knock you out-standard looking rooms with high ceilings. Biggest issue was service. Staff could use training. Found service issues in all areas, example, had to finally go to bar to see if we could get dinner service on deck. Checking in was interrupted by staff taking phone calls. Unfortunate.

I have been staying at this hotel for as long as I can remember. I have family in Ashland, so I have been going there since I was a child. This hotel has changed ownership over the years, and I can't honestly say that I enjoy it as much now as I did before It became part of a chain. The pillows are not very comfortable and the blankets are on the thin side. I think it is a bit overpriced for what you get, but I guess with the tourism boom that is taking over the north shore this is part of it. A stand out team member is Stan - Night Audit. Coming from a hotel background myself I know how difficult things can get and he was personable, friendly, knowledgeable and kind. I very much enjoyed my conversation with him. Overall though I will say, that this is the only hotel in Ashland proper that I am currently willing to stay in.

"Management must not be reading Tripadvisor"

After traveling most of the day we chose this hotel because of the bar and restaurant on premises. The hotel is very nice; wonderful rooms, wonderful views and clean. But the restaurant/bar is woefully understaffed. When we visited there were probably 50 people and only 1 bartender and 1 waitress. The bartender was doing 80% of everything; taking food orders, busing tables, settling bills and in between that trying to serve drinks. He was totally overwhelmed. The hotel manager eventually found his way down to help but was late from the earlier chaos. Management= it is still high season; I would suggest either staffing the restaurant/bar or close it down. The food was ok, the drinks were good.

"SO MUCH Better than any other Best Western!!!!"

What a wonderful hotel! Rooms were very, very clean, the reception area was decorated with such lovely, well preserved antiques, the staff were very friendly and responsive, the complimentary breakfast had real eggs and other nice selections, and the Caribou coffee was excellent! The views of Lake Superior were wonderful and such lovely flowers on the property! My wife and I kept repeating......"this isn't a Best Western - it is way too nice!!!" Nothing against Best Westerns but all the ones we stayed at previously were very much "budget" looking hotels.......well done, Hotel Chequamegon!!!!

"Grand old hotel..."

My friend and I stayed here two nights and enjoyed the old style elegance of the hotel, including the furnishings and the stunning views of Lake Superior. Our room was fine with two comfortable beds and a view of the lake. Housekeeping fell down a little by failing to clean behind the nightstand and failing to provide us with shampoo. We had three bottles of conditioner. Interestingly, I found a small hunting knife under the edge of my bed - something housekeeping should have caught. The breakfast was tasty and a notch above most hotel buffets. Overall, we had an enjoyable stay.

"Nice location, poorly executed."

Nice location, but poorly trained staff, poor breakfast, site not maintained. Room not properly serviced. Various excuses made, rather than problems solved. Would potentially be an excellent hotel in perfect location.

"Old World Charm"

BEAUTIFUL hotel with Old World charm and decor. Helpful, friendly staff. Excellent dinner on the deck overlooking the waters of Lake Superior. Indoor pool and hot tub were refreshing after a long day of travelling.

We always stay in this hotel when we are in the area. Wonderful location, beautiful gardens, patio facing the bay. Staff is very helpful and nice, lots of antique and interesting furnishings. Includes pool, whirlpool and fitness facility. What's not to like?

We really had high hopes for this hotel. Our room with a lake view would have required us to stand by one of the two windows to enjoy the view. They have too few tables on their deck so we ended up going elsewhere to enjoy the views and the outstanding weather. We spent little time at the hotel except to sleep because of it. Their complimentary breakfast is the usual, nothing spectacular. The beds were comfortable.

The hotel has the charm of an old hotel with lots of history but rooms need to be updated badly with smaller pieces of furniture or less so its not so crowded, we had 2 queens and it was tight. The room needed a good long cleaning very dusty, pop lid under chair, bathroom needed a new shower head, and cleaning in corner. Price was high and really noisy

Beautiful property with a great deck overlooking the lake and sunset views. Clean quiet room, a nice breakfast and a good bar and restaurant downstairs, friendly helpful staff. We were with a large group and they were very accommodating. If I'm ever back in this area will definitely stay here again

"Wonderful property"

What a 5 star location! On the shores of lake superior with a patio/deck that anyone can sit on and view the sunrise or sunset. Approaching the hotel, the flowers were beautiful. I particularly loved the antiques. If you are interested in finding out more about them, ask the desk clerk and they will give you a pamphlet that tells all about them. The beds were comfortable and clean. There is a restaurant that also has outdoor eating and I will review that by itself as I don't want to spoil the review of the property. This is a terrific place to stay. Don't miss the cookies and fresh lemon water in the lobby.

"Great sunset view"

Stopped here prior to a kayak trip to the Apostel islands. Great location with nice lake view. The food is ok. Breakfast free, basic and also ok. Reception for us was not available at arrival, had many jobs that night. Rooms are clean, free WiFi. I'd say overall what you would expect but not more than average.

"Beautiful View of Lake Superior"

We spent one night at this unique hotel on Lake Superior. The view of the lake is spectacular! We had a family room that held 2 beds and a sofa bed. The room had a particular name but I don't recall what it was. The room was large but the bathroom was very small. Sofa bed mattress very thin and uncomfortable. In hindsight, we should have brought our inflatable mattress in rather than use the sofa bed. The AC unit did not cool the room as much as we would have liked but there was a ceiling fan in the room that helped us to sleep well. I don't imagine extra cold AC is needed too often in this part of the country. The hotel property is lovely with several nice decks and lots of chairs to lounge and enjoy the view. The indoor pool was very refreshing after a long day in the car. Restaurant waiters and bartenders were very kind. One bartender even went out of her way to make my son some chocolate milk. The hotel didn't appear to be very busy and it was sometimes hard to find a staff member in the lobby or front desk area. (*Try Pizza Pub for dinner. Pizza was excellent and they have gluten free crust options!)

"Hotel Average Food Terrible!"

My husband and I spent two days at this hotel. The rooms were average. The furnishings in the lobby were very nice. However the restaurant was the worse I have ever been in! First it took forever to get a waitress. When we got one she didn't some to want to be bothered taking our order. We were the only ones there! We both ordered Rueben sandwiches. The corn beef was shredded and it was mostly fat. I complained and was told I ordered it, I have to pay for it. Not good at all!

"The place to stay in Ashland"

This hotel is not particularly old - it was built in the 1980's BUT it has the feel of a grand old lakeside hotel from the 19th century. Rooms are large and comfortable, staff are gracious and welcoming, the views from the outside terrace are lovely. We were there for two nights on a visit to the Apostle Islands and thoroughly enjoyed our stay.

"Good place to stay "

My husband and I recently stayed here while celebrating our 42nd anniversary and overall this is a nice place. We were put in an octagon room with a jacuzzi and it was very nice. At first we wondered about how old this hotel was as it's made to replicate a historic place. They have some very interesting historical facts with it & our view overlooked the Lake. Would recommend staying here if visiting in the area.

"Good night's sleep"

There were lot's of younger kids staying during the time we were there, and they did what little kids do - run down the halls using their outside voices. I have no problem with that, as they're on vacation and excited, but what was great was that the walls and doors were really noise dampening, and we could barely hear them. The lake side rooms have great views of the lake, and the patio as well. We had dinner one night at Molly Cooper's, and it was lovely, with a very relaxed vibe and tables set far apart, pretty good food, and cold drinks. Rooms were comfortable and clean, the pool was warm, and the spa had a turbulent, vigorous jet. Pretty big breakfast with good Caribou Coffee.

"Great resort style hotel with fabulous view of Lake Superior"

I spent 3 very enjoyable days at this property in one of the suites while on vacation. The view of Lake Superior from the 5 windows in my room was stunning. Our room was clean and ready upon our arrival at 3pm. Hotel staff were friendly and helpful. The bartenders Janelle and Jess were especially welcoming and my bf and I enjoyed spending some time at the bar each evening talking with them and other guests. Housekeeping personnel were efficient and even though I only asked for towel and garbage service each day, it was done quickly and as I asked.

Stayed in the Butternut Suite the eve of my daughter's graduation from Northland College. Pretty room on a curve of the building with five windows. The ceilings in the room are high, old hotel style. The view to the west is better than looking east. I like the old feel of the building even though it's updated.

Best Western took a charming, but old hotel and renovated it to a warm and beautiful place to stay. The elegant atmosphere of the early 1900's has been updated with present day features. We look forward to staying at the Hotel Chequamegon our next trip to Ashland Wi.

This was a great hotel to stay in, clean and comfortable. Beds were cozy. I rated the hotel as average just because it needs a bit of an upgrade. the rooms could use some paint, new flooring and an upgrade to modern decor. Overall a nice place to stay and I will return here if in the area.

I want to tell you about one of your employees name Lisa. Lisa is amazing. I fell off a ladder and was in excruciating pain and Lisa did everything she could to help me. It's funny while I was at the front counter I saw her help other people and she did it with joy kindness and also has a great knowledge of the area. I will come back because of her and the way she treated me.

When we checked in the staff was very friendly. They have great coffee and cookies! It is a very clean hotel with a beautiful view and a nice breakfast. They have some beautiful antiques and a small pool. I was disappointed that the hot tub was broken. The room could use some updating with a new mattress and towels. We will return but would give it a 3 1/2 star and hope for updates.

Pool was very, very cool. Hard to have fun and not deep enough for lap swimming. Great breakfast, good service overall. Room was very clean I am very hard of hearing and the closed captioning on the tv did not work. Also more than half of the channels listed did not work

We stayed at this hotel for one night and wished we could have stayed longer. Absolutely beautiful facility, wonderful staff, delicious complimentary breakfast, and a beautiful view of Lake Superior. We stayed here after having to evacuate our own city after a refinery explosion so it was a last minute decision to stay here. The staff at the front desk went above and beyond to make our stay a great experience.

Don't stay anywhere else in Ashland. Best customer service in an extremely unique hotel. Bar and restaurant on site with a good free breakfast in the morning. Best hotel in the area. Reasonable pricing.

Great atmosphere and appearance. Wonderful full breakfast (Not just minimal breakfast choices). Had a problem with multiple irons leaving apparent mineral dust from water left in them but staff found one that did not have buildup.

Comfy, satisfying stays guaranteed. So much warmth and charm at a very reasonable price. Their restaurant/pub offers great steaks, local seafood and the best bloody mary I have ever tasted. Roaring fire in the study fireplace, expansive views of Lake Superior and one of the best complementary breakfast buffets I have ever had. Very consistent top shelf care and support. Recommend 100%. Been staying here for years. Once you stay...you will return too.

Nice motel and they did a great job accommodating a Huge group late at night when we arrived. Id would like to stay here in the summer. Im sure the lake is beautiful. Great service. I would stay here again.

Such a cozy relaxing stay, I got much needed rest and the staff made me feel so welcomed. Plenty to do and if you ask locals they'll steer you in the right direction. Just a short distance from Ironwood with fun shops to check out.

We stayed two nights in February and made the right choice!! Beautiful and extremely clean hotel!! The staff was very friendly and the room was spacious and clean. We had very restful nights after xx skiing. Thank you.

Our stay started out great with the staff allowing us to check in two hours early. We left the hotel that afternoon and returned around 8:30pm. The manager and clerk at the desk did not acknowledge us when we walked in the lobby and while we waited for our elevator even though I intentionally tried to make eye contact several times so I could say hello. We planned to eat dinner at Molly Cooper's, the hotel restaurant, but were not in a hurry because the front desk clerk had said they served food until 10pm. We got to Molly's at 8:50pm and were greeted with an unpleasant look from the bartender who asked before we even sat down "what do you want to drink" and was clearly annoyed that we were there since we were the only ones at the bar. We ordered our drink and asked about ordering food but she said the kitchen closed at 9pm. Two women came to the bar and asked how long the bar was open. The bartender replied "well, I have to stay open until 10", but once again looked annoyed and clearly did not want customers. Needless to say, we slipped out after one drink while the bartender was outside smoking. Our room was way too hot and we couldn't control the heat so had to plug in the air conditioner in the middle of the night while it was 20 degrees outside. We found the previous customers leftover food in the refrigerator and the microwave was filthy. The bed and pillows were very uncomfortable. To top it off, the wi-fi did not work in our room. We definitely would not stay there again. Had the customer service been better, it might have been worth the $165 we paid, but I would rather stay in a lower star hotel for less money where they treat you well and the rooms are better.

"The BEST of Ashland"

We've stayed at four area hotels in Ashland and the Hotel Chequamegon is the best, by far. At check-in I requested to be away from the elevator or ice machine, as I'm a light sleeper. The manager directed the desk clerk to upgrade me to a suite facing the lake. What a nice surprise! We had the Friday Fish at the restaurant on the lower level, which was delicious and priced right. The pool was cold and the room temperature was cold, so swimming wasn't much fun. Summer prices are a bit higher due to tourism, but this is a great place to stay!

I spent 3 nights here in February. I had a king suite with a whirlpool I didn't use. But the room in general was larger than without. The lake side room on the third (top) floor are quite, clean. And, except for the bathroom. spacious. In the restaurant I had a very good entree of grilled fresh Whitefish, with maple syrup coated roasted carrots.

Had a very nice experience at the Chequamegon Hotel. Will be back! Love the décor and the staff was far and above any hotel I have stayed in in the Midwest. It was the Christmas holiday so expected service to be on the slim side...not so. Adapted to our needs for the Holidays and it was much appreciated. Met other very nice travelers and shared some time with them which was very nice.

A piece of history with warm and friendly staff to ward off the outdoor frigid cold. The decor and warmth of this establishment is above and beyond most that I have experienced in the past. I felt as is I stepped back in time and was even greated by a friendly ghost in a cowboy get up.

This hotel is an older hotel that has gone through a lot of renovations making it up-to-date but still with a historic feel. My room was clean, well appointed and modern. It was very quiet, and very comfortable. The lobby of the hotel has dark wood and a historic atmosphere. The front desk is a wooden counter which would not be out of place in an 1800s hotel. The lobby is the same. There is a restaurant on site which I did not partake of, but I have heard it is good. The hotel overlooks the bay/Lake Superior and was lovely even in winter. Overall, I'd happily stay here again.

Stayed in a suite overlooking Lake Superior. The hotel is renovated, yet has many old fashioned touches. Lots of dark wood. Stayed the night before Thanksgiving and got an excellent rate. The bed was comfy with a couch near the windows to see the lake. There's a trail right behind the hotel. Not all picturesque, yet we saw a snowy owl!! If you walk about a mile west you come to a tunnel under Hwy. 2 that's filled with mosaics of local plants and animals. At the other side of the Hwy. you can access a historic downtown with shops, restaurants, a coop and a brewery.

I paid to not stay at this hotel. That's how bad it was, I wouldn't even accept complimentary points because I know I will never stay at a Best Western again. I travel for work and stay in a lot of hotels. This hotel reminded me why I would be willing to drive an extra hour and a half to stay at a Hampton Inn.

"Note on the One Bedroom Suites"

When we had small kids, we used to try to get one-bedroom suites in hotels. We could put the kids to bed early in one room (usually the "living" room) and then stay up in the bedroom to watch TV. If you want this in the Hotel Chequamegon, there are a few things to keep in mind. First, there is a pass-through-type window between the two rooms that cannot be closed or covered. It will let light and sound from one room to the other. Second, there does not appear to be any way to control the heat or cooling in the "living" area. The bedroom has a wall unit AC/heater that works fine, but if the "living" room is too warm or cool there isn't any obvious way to adjust the temp. Third, many one-bedroom suites have TVs in both the bedroom and the living area, but this one only had a TV in the bedroom. All that said, we had a comfortable stay, and enjoyed the ambiance of the old-timey place. It's in a good, central location, it was quiet, and the included breakfast was pretty good.

I always stay at the Chequamegon when in Ashland. The view of the bay is really nice. I go for a run on the walking path that runs parallel to the shoreline. Easy access to the downtown area. They have a good breakfast here as well.

They take good care of this hotel. Our room was clean and nice, and the beds were very comfy. The big porch and lake views were lovely. The breakfast had variety but not the best food quality. There is some lake clean up taking place in a tent next door, which is not the hotel's fault. The tent affects the view a bit off to one side only, but is not noisy or dirty. It's unfortunate that it is there but it didn't bother us. We do plan to return in the future.

We enjoyed the Old Feel of the property, but a lot of the decor was outdated/old. The decking is beautiful as was the front of the hotel, but the landscaping has been neglected. Front Desk staff was always present, which was nice.

A good looking property, terrible food in the restaurant, and we were kept waiting to check in until the last possible moment, which was annoying sitting in the lobby waiting when there must have been other rooms ready. Room was on the traffic side and the other side has a splendid view of the lake, so specify carefully which you prefer.

We booked a stay here under the impression it was a historic hotel, only to find out it is not. The staff wasn't overly friendly and I don't think it was as nice a hotel as they made it out to be. Inside the room one couldn't tell if they where in a cheap motel or here. Very pricey for no more then it was.

Older hotel with musty smell in hallways. Beds are comfy. The bathroom looked dingy & there was no toilet paper. Staff is friendly. Hot tub does not work right (jets are too high & water just splashed over the side) Cookies & coffee on arrival ! Balconies to hang out on so no lake view room needed. breakfast was sausage gravy/biscuits & boiled eggs, cereals & pancakes/fruit. Nothing special but a good place to stay.

This property looks better from the outside than it does from the inside. Much of the antique furniture in the lounge was uncomfortable and chipped. My room was adequate, the bed comfortable enough, but as in many hotels, the hall noise (from a group of volleyball players in a tournament in town) was irritating. This is not the fault of the hotel, but not fun, either. I used the jacuzzi, but note that the jets, instead of going into the water, shot up out of the water. I turned off the jets. The bar on the same floor as the pool, smelled like chlorine. Not a pleasant place to have a drink. This hotel, as are most in the area, are dependent upon vacationing visitors, and my guess is that the shoulder seasons it is fairly empty. I feel the price is a bit too high, but expect anytime between Memorial and Labor Day is going to be expensive.

I took one look at the hotel's web site picture and knew we had to stay here! The hotel is a real beauty, drenched in history, with a lovely lobby and has antique touches throughout. The front desk staff was so courteous and professional, filling us in on historic elements of the property. My husband and I were upgraded to a suite quite unexpectedly, after booking a regular room with a lake view. They were totally booked the night we were there. The suite was just gorgeous and truly our favorite stay of our whole three week vacation. We felt like royalty and only wished we could have stayed longer! It was glorious, clean and the bed was so comfortable. Would love to return!

We stayed at Hotel Chequamegon in Ashland for 4 nights. We had to change rooms 3 of the 4 nights due to my own laziness of booking late. The staff made sure we were comfortable changing rooms and even allowed us to put our things in the new room early so we could enjoy the day. The only 2 drawbacks were the rooms were pricey and the chord on one of the room's blow dryers was about 1 1/2 feet long.

We had a suite with a lake view. My wife and I take time to walk on the walking path next to the lake and go all the way to the park and fill our water bottles with the artesian spring water. The cookies in the lobby could be better, nice to offer but can tell they were frozen and crumble quickly. The deck on the back of the hotel has a nice view of the lake. They do have a small indoor pool that is nice on a bad weather day. The location is convenient. We always stay here when in Ashland.

The hotel has a lot of antique items and really sets the mood for the whole hotel. The room was clean. Our room was a water view, and it was breath taking !! The outside decks are nice to sit on and have drink or just enjoy the view. The pool was small, but served it's purpose, the hot tub however was not very relaxing, the air that it pushes is too strong so can't enjoy it and the water sprays up into your face. The staff was friendly and knowledgeable about the area. Would definitely stay here again !!!!

Nice historic hotel. Good view of Lake Superior and the sunset. Nice staff at restaurant but comely incapable. We arrived 45 min prior to sunset. We finally got the table cleaned off from previous guest after 25 min, menus after 35 min, drink order taken 40 min, food order taken inside because the sun had set. Not to mention the lemon that was never delivered with fish. Very poorly run. Too bad really.

A short 20-25 minute drive to Bayfield, with an amazing view of the Bay. The restaurant serves great food and the breakfast is better than most free offerings. Our room exceeded our expectations as we stayed for 2 nights with an 18 & 21 year old as well as 2 adults. Very friendly and helpful staff.

The hotel cleaning folks just go through the motions. We were told the room was cleaned and inspected prior to our check in, however we found cold dried pasta on the floor next to the refrigerator, a large bag of of trail mix on the window cell, multiple hair on the pillows, and a dirty bathroom all left over from the guest before us. We notified the Frontdesk after day one and they did offer an apology. The second day they did change the sheets and removed the bag of snacks but that was it. The pasta and bathroom remained unchanged. If you like a hotel that the staff are willing to work to keep clean, I would NOT suggest this hotel. $200 per night???? "A Nice Place on a Great Lake"

We visited the Bayfield area in July. We stayed at Hotel Chequamegon (pronounced: shwa-meh-gun), an older hotel, for 4 nights in a clean and comfortable room overlooking Lake Superior. The hotel serves ice cold water and delicious cookies in the lobby for its guests.A typical room had 2 queen beds and a standard bathroom.This hotel has a continental breakfast where the main entree changes each day. There are 2 decks overlooking the lake where we enjoyed a few drinks and a meal after spending the day in Bayfield. The staff was very friendly and helpful during our stay and made wonderful suggestions of other restaurants in Ashland to visit. You've got to stop in to El Dorado, a terrific Mexican restaurant! The burritos are h-u-g-e! I'm not kidding. Big enough to share. Get there early because it's a favorite of the locals. You won't be disappointed.

"Over priced "

Our visit began with a long wait to check in. During this time we waited while the "Customer Service Manager " yelled at a staff member in the kitchen over the phone with his back to us. Once that was over, he greeted us with "I need your ID and credit card." No hello or how can I help you. The conversation was short and not sweet. In the morning the pancake machine was broken and all they had was what seemed like very old biscuits and gravy with a choice of 4 doughnuts or very small muffins. While getting coffee, a kitchen staff member reached directly in front of me to change the coffee without even saying a word. She must have learned her customer service skills from the manager. Our room had dirty window sills and a dirty used wash cloth left in the bathroom from the previous guests. For the cost of their rooms I expect a higher level of service. Their restaurant may have been good but we refused to give any more money to this place. We were truly disappointed with our stay. Save your money and find another hotel.

It seems like this hotel could be SO nice, but it is not. The toilet in our room was not clean when we arrived. The bathroom smelled like urine and air freshener mixed together. The ice maker was COVERED in black mildew. Way overpriced for what you get.

This is such a beautiful hotel, from the outside to the wonderful antique furniture and fixtures. We had surprise of an upgrade we arrive. We had a beautiful overlook of the lake. The rooms were very nice. The breakfast was like most Best Westerns, We used the restaurant and the food was great. Being a plus member we are always offered a treat bag or points, we usually take the points, this time the treat bag offered 2 free drinks at the bar and train mix. We enjoyed the two free drinks. The hotel is located right on Lake Superior and within walking distance of the Historic area and other locations to eat. This was a little more expensive being the weekend in the summer, but a nice ending to a weeks vacation.

"Nice old type hotel"

It's a little deceiving that when you look around this place you think, wow what a grand old hotel. Then you find out that it was build in the 1980's. For me personally that was not a big deal, but if you are a history lover that might be a put off. We enjoyed our dinner from the back deck that overlooks the bay. The rooms were comfortable. I didn't see much in this area for kids to do but for couples this is a good option.

"Wonderful "

My wife and I spent 2 nights here during our trip around Lake Superior. Great hotel. We got off to a bit of a negative start. The check in was smooth. Very friendly and professional front desk staff. Excellent information about local restaurants and history. The hotel itself is very old but totally renovated on the inside. The historic look was kept while updating all of the rooms and common areas. Our first experience with our corner suite was a little disappointing. Beautiful lake view, 6 windows!! The housekeeping was not up to the standard and price we were paying. Upon opening our door the first thing we saw was a bed Pillow on the floor, Empty Kleenex box on floor beside toilet. This made my wife question if the flooring had even been cleaned. Our shower head leaked all over and the tv didn't work until I got batteries at the front desk. I'm pleased to say I was able to speak with the manager who was very apologetic and helpful. He did make an adjustment on our room charge. Everything turned out wonderful. The onsite dinning was very good and service was great. I didn't get the name of our server but she was very helpful. She also worked on the front desk. Beautiful decks overlooking the marina on Lake Superior, amazing sunsets. We highly recommend this hotel. We think it's a must stay if traveling in the area. Dave & Tammy

"Pros and cons"

Pros: on a marina on Lake Superior. Looks like a Grand Hotel, but actually built in 1986. Friendly, fast check in. We did not eat dinner in the hotel restaurant, but guests seem to like it. Cons: floor in our room not level--desk drawer kept sliding open, doors want to move. No closet. Wardrobe makes room seem narrow. Worn out security hangers fall off wardrobe, room windows screwed shut, breakfast cereal dispenser broken. Hotel next to a toxic remediation site. Seemed overpriced to me.

While the hotel isn't really that old, it was designed nicely to appear historic. Location - in the heart of Ashland, right off the lake and a walking trail along the lake. Nice views from their patio off of the lobby and bar/lounge. We had a room with windows to the lake - these are standard sized windows (2) that open - with a beautiful, relaxing view. We had a double queen room - ample sized with free internet and a small fridge. The bed was as hard as sleeping on the floor and the fitted sheets didn't fit - by morning, we were on the actual mattress (eww.) The room was quiet - only one time heard noise from someone walking down the hall. The lobby area is beautiful and the bar/lounge is really nice with good food. Breakfast is free: pancake maker, waffle maker, instant oatmeal packets, 3 cereals, hard boiled eggs, yogurt packs, oranges, toast, juice/coffee/tea/milk. One morning they had muffins, sausage patties, and egg patties to make a breakfast sandwich. A few more fruit selections would make this even better. Rates are pricey but this is probably the nicest hotel in the heart of Ashland. Within walking distance of downtown - restaurants, bars, shops; only 1/2-hour to Bayfield and the docks.

Decent hotel but what made it great is the sunset from the lake view room. Everything else is good enough but definitely worth the money to be on the lake. Piano in the lobby which is cool but guests can't play it because it's severely out of tune I was told. Would be worth the money for them to get it in working order because it's pretty cool to have a piano available.

Except for the occasional super fund clean up smell it is a great place with great staff. Food is excellent and service is great The city has a great walking trail just below the hotel grounds. Also a large number of murals on buildings in the historic district.

This is a nice hotel but could be excellent. Everything is average except the rate which is way too high. The decor is beautiful and the rooms are quiet which I appreciate. They used to have a wonderful breakfast with fresh fruit but no longer. Since their breakfast area is getting remodeled maybe that's coming back! I hope!

Truth be told, I've been traveling to Ashland, WI since I was a very small child and I've always looked at the Hotel Chequamegon with envy and as a bucket list place to stay. They've always been sold out for the dates I've looked at and I can see why. I finally had my wish come true due to a last minute cancellation that I was able to grab. The lobby has a warm, homey feel with lots of antiques that go well with the surroundings. The rooms are fine, and actually quite nice compared with other properties in Ashland. (You won't find nicer, but it's kind of a low bar in this area!) The outstanding parts of this property are the staff and the deck off the back of the hotel. The staff was so welcoming and friendly and really seemed to care that we enjoyed our visit. The deck is expansive with a breathtaking view of the marina and the sunsets over Chequamegon Bay. I'd definitely stay here again given the opportunity.

We stayed in the Best Western in Ashland for a night. The hotel is beautifully located at Lake Superior and still central in town. Our room was spacious and very clean. Breakfast was good - it should be mentioned that the hotel avoided the usual plastic plates and cutlery and offered real tableware which is standard in Europe, but we rarely encountered that in the US. In summer season, all hotels in the region were quite expensive, so this is not a negative for the Best Western in Ashland.

If you are looking for a decent place to stay in the Ashland, Wisconsin area, The Best Western Chequmegon would be a pretty good choice. We found our room to be a nice size & very comfortable. Our only complaint is that the breakfast was a typical Best Western fare. No fruit, fake eggs, hard sausages & bitter coffee. If the breakfast had been better, I would have rated this place excellent. One other comment: On our 3 week trip through Michigan, Minnesota and Wisconsin, we stayed at many Best Westerns of similar quality, yet this hotel was roughly 50% more expensive. I think the price was a bit too much for this hotel.

We were just loafing around Northern Wisconsin. Great Hotel to reside at while loafing in the area, Ashland Community Band Concert to sailing around the Apostle Islands. Some event are in walking distance like the Ashland Mural walk and the trail along the bay. Others like Madeline Island require driving and a Ferry.

Our room was large and comfortable. We had a wonderful lake view and watched the sun set from our room each night over the beautiful bay and marina. Contrary to what another reviewer remarked, I thought the breakfast was good. There were plenty of selections and, if I remember correctly, a waffle maker to make your own waffles with strawberry sauce. Would definitely stay here again.

We very much liked the hotel, its history and the great location. The room we were given was large and had a nice lake view. We were however massively disappointed by the breakfast which was substandard even compared to other Best Western hotels. There was very little selection available at the buffet and most of it was prepackaged stuff. It is hard to understand why on one side you maintain such a great restaurant on site and on the other offer breakfast of this low quality.

Stayed here for two nights when celebrating my parents 50th. We reserved four rooms for 6 adults and a total of 4 teenage kids with bay view rooms. The staff was great as far as allowing us to shuffle bills around when paying for others. Wonderful views and relatively easy access to Bayfield. We ate and drank in the bar the first night and thoroughly enjoyed happy hour. For diner we ate some white fish sandwiches that were on special... and we definitely recommend this place.

One feels very cared for here. It's in an old, historic building overlooking Kale Superior. They have a beautiful outdoor restaurant /deck. One can also eat inside as the weather can be unpredictable in this part of Northern Wisconsin. It can be expensive, but it's a rare treat to stay in a place like this.

Likes: Staff was very courteous, friendly and accommodating. Room had a great view facing the lake. Décor in the hotel was nice if you like older décor. Maybe a little outdated for my taste. Swimming pool and hot tub was fun for my 13 year old. It was a little small in size, but was never crowded when we were there swimming. Nice area for continental breakfast with plenty of seating with many choices of breakfast foods. The restaurant in the hotel was excellent - food we ordered was fantastic (fish fry). The waitress the first night of our stay was wonderful. Dislikes: Beds were very uncomfortable (firm, hard mattresses). Woke up with back aches every morning. Continental breakfast food can be improved with better, more freshly made foods, better assortment of fresh fruit and better pastry choices. Bartenders and wait staff at the bar were not overly accommodating on our second and third nights there, service was somewhat slow. Thought they would have been more talkative and friendly (and smiling).

Very nice, very pretty, has everything one would need. Great views of lake. The main part of historic Ashland is within easy walking distance, as is a walking running path, which is easily accessed just below the hotel. The location and the view gives one such an immediate presence of Lake Superior. I will definitely return.

Weather was terrible as the wind blew and rained poured all week. Long days of work meant trekking outside for dinner would further depress the mood. Fortunately, Molly's restaurant and bar made the business trip dinners easy, convenient, and delicious. Plus Surly Furious on tap. Will stay again if in town on business or pleasure.

The Hotel Chequamegon is a lovely old hotel, sitting in the center of Ashland, WI right on the bay feeding into Lake Superior. We arrived too late to enjoy many amenities, our room was very nice but we did have a couple of technical issues, one not fixable at the time, and when I discussed them with the very friendly desk clerk the next morning she graciously thanked me, credited our account for a significant amount, and assured me the issues would be taken care of for future users. I would definitely stay here again, just arrive earlier! Breakfast was just so-so, but a new addition to regular BW food was a pancake maker! Nice.

The view was spectacular and the outside looks amazing. However, the room smelled of stale pizza. I had to clean almost everything before I unpacked. Hairs on bedding and in shower, The bedskirt was nasty and stained.

Classic real old world charm on the lake. Typical continental breakfast. Nice bar\\lounge on the lower level. I had a room away from the lake so there wasn't much of a view from that side. I don't remember getting a better nights sleep in a hotel. Very quite room, comfortable beds, great shower.

I really liked the hotel, a little bit surprised for two NIGHTS cost me almost $300! Excellent food in the basement restaurant. (STRANGE PLACE FOR A RESTAURANT) I was disappointed when arriving into the room, the thermostat was set at the highest level! - Had to TURN ON THE A/C to make the room bearable. The young lady who checked us in upon arrival was a GEM!! Friendly, funny and very informative. The Gentleman on SATURDAY NIGHT could not answer questions about the INTERNET. - VERY DISAPPOINTED THAT THE INTERNET WAS NOT SECURE.......very slow as well.

Our visit was during an oddly warm February (warm is relative). The hotel is an impressive edifice, made with keeping the history of the area alive. The lobby is very pleasant, with a grand northern-Wisconsin feel. Entering further, one finds the delightful parlor, well done with an historic theme. The hotel room was fine: nothing amazing nor terrible. Although the hallways are rather standard, they did have touches of historic decor to keep it somewhat interesting. The downstairs has eateries, which we did not try, but do look inviting. The walkways off of the the pub go out toward the lack and look as though they would be very enjoyable during the non-frozen months. Nice views of the lake from the parlor, the deck off of the parlor and the boardwalks. I found the price to be rather high, even with some discounts. Maybe this is one of the few non-lodge type hotels around? The breakfast (including) was better than continental, but a the presentation of the eggs and meats were a little peculiar, being most likely mass produced ahead of time. The staff did a wonderful job of keeping food stocked and areas clean. The front desk staff was pleasant and helpful.

If you want a friendly hotel where you are treated like family then the Hotel Chequamegon in Ashland, Wisconsin is for you. It is always clean & quiet with a breathtaking view of Lake Superior as you sit on their deck & enjoy eating & drinking. The Hotel Chequamegon is loaded with history from the 1800's from when the ore ships made Ashland a roaring town with about 80,000 people. Although Ashland has a population of a little over 8000 today it is still a great town where everyone is friendly.

Quaint hotel, very well maintained, nicely located near downtown so you can take a decent walk down main street and then up the board walk along the Bay. You have the option of rooms overlooking Chequamegon Bay. Great staff and a nice breakfast on all accounts. Always hot coffee and cookies waiting for you 24 hours a day. Decent parking for a boat and trailer and outlets to plug a boat battery in. The restaurant is worth one night, for sure. Also within walking distance (2 blocks) is 2nd Street Bistro, which is definitely worth an evening meal too.

Stayed one night in October. Overall, it's a great hotel. Excellent location, well-appointed rooms and lobby, excellent restaurant on site, friendly staff, good breakfast. We've stayed there before, but this was the first time since it became part of the Best Western chain. We had no WiFi access. Staff told us that Apple products don't work on the WiFi. Really? It's not like it's a "minor" brand. Have never had a problem like this before, either a hotel's WiFi works, or it doesn't. "Doesn't work with Apple?" What's with that? A nice young man from the front desk even came to our room and called tech support but still couldn't resolve the issue. Hey, Best Western... it's nearly 2017; Apple has been around a while. How about getting on board?

This was our fourth trip to Hotel Chequamegon. Over the years, it had come into disrepair, but the new owner/operator has done an excellent job of returning this property to its past glory. Welcoming staff were indeed that, welcoming, and took the time to see if our room (226, recommend highly) was ready as we were early. It was ready and check-in was flawless. Everything clean and ready to go. First order of business was to have one of their loaded bloody marys. Still awesome. Had the fish fry Friday night and it was very good. The wait staff took good care of us. Small glitch with the Wi-Fi but was handled. The grounds and outside of this grand hotel have obviously been worked on. My marital unit enjoyed the morning breakfast. Checkout was flawless. If you have never been to Hotel Chequemegon, we recommend it.

We stayed here two nights while touring the area and found it to be most pleasant and comfortable. We really enjoyed the old school design and style of the building, which was built in 1986 to look as if it was built in 1896. The hotel features a retro design and feel with many antique furniture pieces or replicas thereof, and successfully recreated the old time atmosphere when travelers first began coming to Ashland. Fine place to stay. In early October, when we were there, guests were mostly middle aged or older, and/or retirees, almost no kids, and that suited us fine. Stan at the desk, was helpful, cheerful and dependable despite his long hours.

My friends and I stayed at this hotel while in Ashland to run the Whistlestop half marathon. It was absolutely beautiful and the view of the lake was out of this world. We slept 5 people in a room so had a rollaway brought in which worked well although it made the room a little tight. We were fine with that because we weren't in the room much anyway. We went to the bar one evening for drinks and appetizers and had a great time. The continental breakfast served was very good and the selection of food was terrific. Everyone we met who worked at the hotel was extremely nice and friendly. If I had one negative, it would be that the cleaning crew didn't make our beds which I thought was extremely strange. It could be because of having the rollaway in between the two beds but still..... Other than that, it was a beautiful hotel and a great experience! Would definitely stay here again.

Stayed with my family for 3 nights during a recent running event. The hotel staff were all very helpful and courteous. Overall an excellent place to stay especially if proximity to the downtown is a priority. Pros: Courteous and helpful hotel staff Clean and well maintained Central location within walking distance of downtown. Negatives: Restaurant atmosphere/service/ food is mediocre Single elevator also used by cleaning staff made access to the floors difficult.

The front desk is your 1st feel for a hotel. As I was approaching they remotely opened the door and the 2 at the front desk both welcomed me. We stayed for 2 days and had a couple requests and they could not have been more helpful. They have a lovely balcony where you will get the best views of the sunset. The bar is nice size and the restaurant had very good food at a reasonable price. Drew the manager and Sarah P. were the nicest employees I have encountered at a hotel. In the lobby they have water, coffee and cookies throughout the day. The room was small but had a fridge and microwave which was a nice touch. We had a lake view room which I would recommend. The windows could use a cleaning but the view was still nice.

This hotel is a historic hotel which they have upgraded for the modern comforts and necessary electrical outlets. It is the most centrally located hotel for the central business district and the Mural Walk. It is almost midpoint on the waterfront path, so you can walk out the door and have a nice walk either way. All downtown restaurants are within a 10 minute walk. There is a reasonably good Chinese restaurant 5 minutes away. If the weather is good, there is a wonderful patio to sit on for drinks or reading. I was a bit frustrated with the manager on check-in (would not allow me to view rooms to see if I wanted to change to a lake view since it was not yet cleaned, and we had to wait for a room). There is always coffee and fresh cookies available in the lobby. I was disappointed with the breakfast, as there was no fresh fruit available at all. It did have eggs, bacon and the general assortments of cereal, oatmeal and yogurt, but no fruit.

"Getaway to Ashland"

We booked the Best Western the first Sunday and Monday in October. The hotel is in a wonderful location with a beautiful view of Lake Superior. We arrived at the hotel at 3:15pm and were told that our room was not ready because they were busy the previous night and were understaffed. He told us to come back in 25 minutes. Someone else came to the desk and actually checked on the room and told us it was ready. Went up to a room that was nicely serviced, had a bit too much carpet fragrance put on it, but was in nice shape. We went to look out the window at the view of Lake Superior. The windows are covered in bugs and really takes away from the beautiful view. We like using the stair whenever we can and avoid the elevators. It appears that they do not monitor the condition of these. Looks like stairs have not been vacuumed in weeks. Had a good first night in hotel. Left early the next morning to explore the northern Wisconsin shoreline. We put the card on the door to have the room serviced. After a full day of sightseeing, we were looking to come back to the room to unwind. We walked into the room and found the room in the same condition that we left it. No service was performed on the room what so ever. Went down to the front desk and talked to the same person who didn't know what to do. Fortunately, another hotel employee was just getting done with their day and overheard my concern. She stepped up and told the person at the desk that she would go up and service the room. 20 minutes later, she showed up to the room. We excused ourselves so the service can be performed. Overall, the potential of this hotel is ENORMOUS. Do have some issues with housekeeping, hotel can use some exterior cleaning.and staff could use some training on overcoming obstacles and working to exceed customer expectations.Little things like drink tickets for not having room ready by check in. Dinner for not having room serviced. The little things you do would make the customer forget about the issues. I would give this property another chance once they work out some of the issues.

"No maid service"

After a long day of touring in the area, we returned to find that no maid service had been provided in our room. Apparently we were supposed to pit out a hangtag asking for the level of service we wanted. I have never stayed in a hotel where a basic level was automatic. At the least i expect the wastebaskets emptied, paper supplies replenished, towels replaced if needed, and the beds remade. I under stand about towels not being automaticalky replaced to save washing, but none of the above are environmentally unfriendly. A auality hotel that this one claims to be should provide at least the badics In addition, our group meal was overcooked, and service was slow and rather sullen. They did not seem to be glad to see our group. This is a bautiful building in a great location. It is too bad their service is so lacking. I would not stay here again.

Very comfortable rooms with nice hottub good bed. Spectacular view to Lake Superior from room and the restaurant which the food was scrumptious. Hotel had all the amenities you need and the staff was very professional.

"Beyond wonderful "

Celebrating a fun couples weekend as newly engaged the staff on 10-1-16 was amazing when we arrived. The lady who checked us in gave us a free bottle of champaign for our room which we enjoyed over looking the lake. The service at the restaurant and bar downstairs was fantastic. Our waitress was kind and understanding. I had to send a fish dinner back because of taste preference and she took it off our bill and grab me another dinner right away. The decor was wonderful and my fiancé was loving all the historical references. The only point of negativity was one particular young man working the front desk that night. Talk about unprofessional! He didn't have any idea about local celebration that was happening 3 blocks down from the hotel or any local points of interest. He seemed much more interested in surfing the Internet than helping the guest. That evening we called down for an extra blankets and apparently interrupted this young man because he seemed incredibly put out to have bring a guest a blanket and said he'd bring it up as soon as he could. Being understanding that he very well be swamped I waited...... 3 hours! Having given him ample opportunity I called again happily to get a hold of a new staff member who brought up a blanket quickly. A 5 star stay with a one starless staff member. He seriously needs more training or to look for a less public service related job. Would happily return because of the rest of staff rocked!

"Get away"

"Breathtaking views!"

This is a very nice hotel right on Lake Superior. We stayed in room 204 Lake side. The view from the room was beautiful. The hall is very quiet even though the ice machine and sofa machine is almost across from the room. I was surprised we didn't hear it. The room was clean and housekeeping service was nice. Very friendly and professional staff. We stayed two nights. Photo 3 is the view from the room.

This is a gorgeous hotel. If you enjoy the outdoors, you have so many opportunities to sit outside and take in Lake Superior. It is is walking distance of beautiful murals. Molly Coopers is a delicious place to eat after a long day of sightseeing. They strive to make your stay pleasurable. Cookies in the lobby are a definite plus.

I travelled to the Ashland, Wisconsin area with a group of friends for a Fall Color trip. We stayed at the Hotel Chequamegon on beautiful Lake Superior. The hotel is a historic recreation of the hotel that stood on the shore of the lake. The rooms are very nice and the beds comfortable. The hotel, while modern in it conveniences, is filled with antiques from the 1800's era. The breakfast included was very good and an evening dinner we had was very good as well. A great stay.

"Horrible Customer Service-So Disappointed in staff"

We were so excited to stay in this hotel due to reading the positive reviews, however we were greatly disappointed. The staff was so rude. We arrived at 2:30 and were told that our room was not ready yet and reminded that our rooms would be ready at 3:00. We went to have a cocktail at the bar in the basement to watch the packer game. We were informed that they do not get the packer game when the Vikings are playing. At 3:00 PM we went back to get out room key and were told that our room was not ready yet-no apologize.. We were told other rooms were ready but we were told that we would need to make additional payment. We finally got into our room at 4:30-again no apologizes at all-we were just told that they were also under the impression rooms should be ready by 3:00. After we went for dinner we went to the bar to have a cocktail at 8:45 and were reminded that they do close at 9:00-the bar tender had friends bring her pizza and was busy talking and eating pizza She was taking bites of her skittles and pizza in the middle of making our drinks! We were part of a large group of people. Many of these people have stayed at the location many times-and none of us will ever go back.

"Motorcycle trip"

Lots of history at this hotel up to date but kept the old motif style. Right on the waterfront of Lake Superior. Has dinner and breakfast. The food for dinner was salmon on a oak plank. Excellent dinner. Breakfast was waffles and pancakes with a choice of cereals and sweet rolls. View of the lake is spectacular!! Worth it

"A hint of History"

This hotel maintains the consistent Best Western quality.The room windows are historically small but if you can get the harbor view for a few extra dollars I would recommend it. The onsite restaurant is good and reasonably priced. Your room key includes a discount and a free drink at their restaurant. The free breakfast is a notch above average with waffles, omelettes and pancakes to go with usual fruit and cereal.

"Very Nice Hotel"

Cozy beds, very quite halls, great breakfast area and restaurant was ok, but staff were not very bubbly and seemed to be out of a couple of items. Would stay again, but would like a lake view. Staff was very friendly. Nice patio and sitting area.

"Mixed feelings."

We came through Ashland on a trip and stayed here due to the ratings. I have to say the building is beautiful. A classic old hotel right on the bay. The room was very nice but there was no coffee or cups for the coffee maker that was in a cabinet with no electric outlet. The phone was on a shelf across the room from the bed and desk. We paid extra for a room with the harbor view, but the windows were so covered with spiderwebs and dead bugs that we decided the view wasn't worth it. Oh, and cheep single ply toilet paper????? We went down to the restaurant/bar for dinner. The special was a fresh fish sandwich with fries for $6.99. I got that, my wife asked for slaw instead of fries. Hers was $12.95. Seems unreasonable to me but the waitress said that was the price with slaw. On the plus side, it's a lovely place and sitting on the deck with a beer was outstanding.

"Good Atmosphere"

This hotel built in 1980s replicates an old resort hotel in the area, with vintage touches in the lobby. The view of Lake Superior from the first floor deck is great. Nice for sunset photos. The rooms have high ceilings and long windows, which unfortunately, I couldn't get open to enjoy fresh air. The air conditioner in my room was a window unit set high into a wall and operated by a remote,. The vents were caked with dust, and I did a lot of hacking and coughing throughout my stay,.During the night, there was a slight, burning odor wafting from somewhere. I figured the heat may have come on for the first time and lint in vents caused the odor. The wi-fi did't work. The front desk didn't seem to care. The room was nice enough, with the usual amenities. The breakfast had gravy and hard biscuits in addition to the usual waffles and cereals and breads. The hotel has a restaurant downstairs, but only the bar with bar food was open. If it weren't for the location and atmosphere, I would rate it lower.

"Beautiful views"

Stayed at the Hotel Chequamegon while traveling through the north woods. It is a beautiful hotel right on the shore of Lake Superior. We had lake view rooms. While our rooms were clean and attractive, the hotel itself lacked good housekeeping. There was litter in the halls and the lobby bathroom had not been well attended to. There is a lovely patio off of the lobby area. However there was still breakfast dishes on the table at 6:00 pm. It had rained the night before and a soggy cigar was left on one of the wet chair cushions. Improved housekeeping would make a huge difference with this hotel.

Exterior appearance of this best western very deceiving. Beautiful exterior with worn and dirty rooms. Its clear there has been no replacement of worn and dated bedding and linens. Pillows were horrid. Be sure to bring your own since there are no good options to stay elsewhere. Shame on management for providing such poor quality rooms at a high nightly rate. Feeling very captured and will be sure to stay outside of Ashland on my next trip!

"Clean rooms, great location"

This Best Western is tastefully decorated and the staff is very helpful. Complimentary continental breakfast is available along with coffee and snacks in the lobby. Rooms are clean. Great location right on Lake Superior and Ashland Lakeshore Trail.

"Overpriced"

We paid over $220.00 per night for a single room with king sized bed. The room was clean but the bedding was worn and the bed/room smelled. The king sized bed had 4 tiny pillows, not even close to standard size. The windows opened but there were no screens in them. We never got our WiFi to work, the desk clerk spent 5 minutes trying and then told me my new smart phone is broken, even though it works now and worked in Italy a few months ago. I only rated four stars due to the convenience of an on sight restaurant and bar and the pleasant view from the deck. The room itself rates three stars considering the price.

"Past its best"

Really sad that this beautiful hotel with fantastic views had been neglected. We had to wait 15 minutes for someone to appear at reception so we could check in. He was pleasant enough but we were tired and just wanted to get to our room. We paid for a "queen" bed, but it was more like a 4'6" bed. Towels were small and a bit tired looking. Room had a microwave, but no plates or cutlery to eat what you heat! The restaurant food was lovely, but the service painfully slow, as they seem to have to serve and man the bar. Our server was however very pleasant and attentive. There is only 1 small lift, which often had to be shared with a porter and luggage.The button for the ground floor in the lift was broken overnight so you could only go to the lower ground floor. So when we came to check out we were left unable to get to the ground floor. Fortunately a member of reception staff came passed and ran up to the next flight to call the lift so it stopped at the ground floor. We were only here 1 night and I'm afraid it failed to impress.

We stayed in this hotel earlier this year. It was one of our waypoints on our return trip from Montreal to Vernon, BC. During our previous stay, we had a room overlooking the lake. This time we had a corner room on the 3rd floor overlooking the front as well as side. The room is well appointed and a propos to its old world charm. We once again enjoyed our one night stay and wished that we could have stayed longer. Despite the fact that the hotel was fully booked, we found our room to be very quiet. Service was excellent. The room was very clean and everything worked just fine. The beds were comfortable. The hotel is right beside a walking path that stretches along the shores of Lake Superior. Wifi worked very well. I highly recommended this hotel.

"Grand Old Hotel"

We were visiting a factory in Ashland and they put us into this hotel. This hotel is like many railroad hotels around the country. It has a great location right on the water with plenty of parking in front. The check in was friendly and the rooms were good sized and clean. Each room had a coffee maker and supplies to start the day. Breakfast is included but I have to say the two breakfast we had were nothing to boast about. There is a cafe in the hotel called Molly's which we were told was the best in town. Don't waste your time the food and service was poor. We had problems with the wifi and it took them from four in the afternoon to nine at night for them to get it working. The service for the internet is not in the hotel as they use an outside provider. I have to say that the people were friendly and the hotel had a nice feel to it. If I end up in Ashland again I would stay with them again.

Overall a nice hotel. Price of rooms is based on location of the property not the service, amenities or furnishings. Rooms that face the lake probably have a great view but they cost more also. There's not much else to choose from in Ashland either. This was probably the crown jewel property of the area at one time.

"Great location with nice amenities and old world charm"

We had a lovely stay at the hotel! Sitting on the top deck at sunset or watching the bay during the day was a highlight. Walking distance to many shops. Free shuttle to Big Top Chatauqua. The place is steeped in history even though it is not an old hotel. The décor is old world with lots of old photos and explanations of the history of the original hotel and the area. The breakfast was great. Wonderful waffles and the automatic pancake machine was a nice touch too. Water and cookies in the lobby all day. Only two issues kept it from being 5 star... the hot tub was out of order for most of our stay, and the shower walls were not cleaned very well.

"Terrible Check in Experience"

We had stayed at this hotel around 10 years ago and were happy with it. It is a beautiful facility, well maintained and full of history. The long balcony overlooks a marina on Lake Superior as well as a long walking/biking trail. We ate our dinners in the bar since the dining room was not open. The service was good and the food average. The breakfast area on the entry floor was not bad. It had a selection of foods, though the eggs and sausage were not very warm. The rest of it was okay. I would have wished for a few more outlets but it did have a fridge and microwave. The shower was great. The WIFI connection was good. The air conditioner was noisy even on the lowest fan setting. I tried to open the windows but could not manage. It was hard to sleep with the AC rattling away. My biggest complaint was the service. We appeared after a long drive at 2:50 with the full understanding that check in was at 3:00. The woman at the desk said it would be 10 to 20 minutes so we settled into the lobby. She disappeared supposedly to see if our room was ready. She did not reappear. After 3:30, I began asking the man at the desk what was happening. His response was "I do not know where housekeeping is". I found this strange but sat down again. He did not seem very concerned. I asked again at 3:50 and when it was 4:07, I had lost my patience with his indifference and lack to action. If I had been in his place, I would have been a bit more accommodating and gracious. When I asked at 4:07, he asked me, "Do you want me to check on your room?" Of course I did since I had no intention of hanging out if the lobby for hours. The original woman had never reappeared. He took off and returned saying that our room was ready. When we got to our room, it was obvious that housekeeping was having a great time in the room they were working on. It also was obvious that the room had been ready for several minutes. The room was clean, though, which was good. Housekeeping provided a Personal Care request form of when we wanted service the next day and what we needed. I filled it out and put it on the door before I went to bed. The next day the form was still on our doorknob and the request was totally ignored that was wanted the cleaning in the morning. They did not show up until 4:00 or 4:30 to empty our garbage and refresh our coffee. I do not understand a hotel of this calibre having such indifferent and disorganized service. It was discouraging enough to make me seriously rethink ever staying at this hotel again. I would have given a rating of 5 if it had not been for the desk personnel attitudes and the poor the lack of organized service.

We used this hotel for our wedding reception and we spent two nights here, the location is beautiful on lake Superior. The staff at the hotel give excellent customer care they were so helpful to us for our special day. We booked one of the hotels four rooms which offer a jacuzzi bath which was fantastic to relax in. The room gave excellent views over the the lake so a little tip ask for room 226. The area gives you five miles of walk ways and hiking and nice beaches to relax on. All in all this hotel is the best one in the area book here and your be pleased you made the right choice.Our wedding day at this hotel was the best and all our family, guests and us had a fantastic experience.

A very nice hotel with peaceful decks overlooking Lake Superior. The hours at Molly Cooper's Bar and grille were shorter than expected, and the staff corrected the hours the next day; The room was very relaxing and had a soft bed; We liked the decks that over look the Bay.

"Lacking in cleanliness & customer service"

The main reasons that I booked this particular hotel were that it looked clean, and that it had a hot tub, as I was celebrating a special occasion with my partner and wanted special amenities to relax. The hot tub was out of order, and the pool area was not very clean/ smelled unappealing, so we did not use it at all. I settled on a hot bath in our room-- but found when I went to take one that I had to clean someone else's pubic hairs from all around the tub. It was extremely gross. I kindly let the woman working the front desk know about my disappointment in both the state of our bathroom and that the hot tub wasn't working, and she brushed me off rudely. She said curtly that she'd let the cleaning person know, defensively said that I could've used the hot tub the night before when it was working (I was told I couldn't use it the night before), she didn't apologize at all for the state of our room, and looked away to continue her tasks. I'm a kind and patient person, but this really rubbed me the wrong way. This isn't as big of a deal, but it depleted the value of our stay as well-- we were told that hot breakfast would go until 10am, so when we came into the dining room at 9:30am, we expected that there would still be food. There were no eggs left, no english muffins, and no sausage-- the only things left were pastries, yogurt, and waffles from a machine. I asked if it would be possible for them to make more hot food and I was told no. If hot breakfast ends at 9:30, your hotel shouldn't advertise that it ends at 10am. The hotel is on the lake with nice views, the bar downstairs was pleasant, and the bed was comfortable. The cleanliness of the room and the hospitality/ customer service, however, are lacking.

This may be the best option in the area, but a bit pricey. Excellent location on the water. Get a room facing the water. The bar/lounge in the hotel offers good food and drink and there are other options with walking distance of the hotel. About 30 minutes drive from Bayfield.

We checked in early and staff was very helpful. We had no problem with parking as the hotel has adjacent parking lot of a decent size.The room was large but we choose one of the suites.The bathroom was small for the room size and could have been bigger. The bed was comfortable and sheets clean. We all slept well. The hotel has great views of the lake and we did enjoy it.

"Excellent Motel"

This was our second stay at the Chaquamegon. The first was our honeymoon 21 yrs ago. The last time for a surprise birthday for my wife. Both times the stay was worthy of praise. The view of Lake Superior is awesome especially in the early morning and at sundown. I would rate this place at or near the top as far as being a unique place to spend a night or weekend with someone special.

Always very clean, with friendly, helpful staff, central location, wonderful lakeside view. Love the decks and the northern parlor. Balanced mix of modern and old. Has an historic feel to it. Rooms have a microwave and refrigerator, and the suites have an extra sink. Internet worked perfectly, tv uses a clean remote, but wish the hotel offered HBO or something similar. Breakfast offered a lot of choices, and was ok.

"Picture Perfect Wedding"

Participated in a wedding at this hotel. Everyone was very helpful and it was a beautiful setting. The crowd looked on from the decks as the couple was wed in the gazebo. Would highly recommend! The gardens were in excellent shape, the location is outstanding. There was a band concert going on in the shell next door and couldn't even hear it from a corner room right next to it! Quite good sound buffering!! Best hotel in Ashland.

"Weekend get away"

Came up for a weekend getaway stayed here for 2 nights. We had a king suite with a full kitchenette living room the bed and bathroom and whirlpool was separate from the living room and kitchen divided by a door. The whole suite had really high ceilings, very clean, really firm but super comfy bed, & the whirlpool in the room was huge. Our room was not facing the bay it was looking towards the parking lot so we had to keep our curtains closed at all time because there is a side walk right there unless we wanted people looking through our windows. But even with being right by the parking lot and road it was super quite barley any noise. Would definitely stay here again!

Beautiful looking hotel with great views if you're on the water side. Very nice amenities, though the prices for everything were a little high. Room value was ok...spent more than I think it was worth but did have a very enjoyable experience. There are restaurants on site but one was not open during our stay and the other kept us away by the prices. Location was central for our purposes - we were enjoying the roads of Wisconsin on our motorycles. Bike parking was good - we were able to park under the porte-cochere to keep our bikes covered for the night.

My wife and I stayed here before and were not impressed. This visit to Ashland was for a class reunion and the destination was The Chequamegon. We thought it would be convenient to stay here despite our previous experience. We stayed here three nights. Of course there was still only one business chair to sit on so one of us had to sit / lay on the bed. One of my friends had a chair in his room so maybe you have to upgrade to a more expensive room to get two chairs. On the third day or room had minimal service. The towels etc. were replenished but the cosmetics, plastic glasses and coffee were not replenished. Also the beds were not made and it didn't appear that the room was cleaned. Despite the poor service the maid remembered to take the gratuity left on the bed. In the morning it would have been nice to sit on one of the two decks but all of the chairs had water on them. The one positive thing to mention was the well prepared food for our reunion banquet / buffet.

Staff was for the most part friendly and welcoming. Rooms were clean and beds were comfortable. Food in the restaurant was excellent as was the view of the lake. Location is close to shopping and to the murals that decorate Main Street. It was quiet for sleeping-- no blaring TVs or footsteps from above.

Hotel is very average at best. Not worth the overpriced cost. You are paying for the views from the hotel and not the hotel itself. Arrived around 9:30pm and there was no parking available. Was told because the restaurant and bar were still open there was no parking. Parked across street at Walgreens until space was available. Hotel was not worth the price paid.

Lovely accommodations with quite good onsite restaurant. The sun deck and access to lakefront bike/walking trail make this exceptional. Top floor corner room was large, modern but traditionally decorated, clean and quiet. Nice couples get away.

First trip to Ashland on a collage visit to Northland. It was important for us to get a feel for the town, and the Best Western gave us this access. Room was clean and spacious, and the reception areas were charming. Certainly the view of Lake Superior from the restaurant was a plus. The hotel was built in the 1980s and the hallways seemed a bit claustrophobic. Positive experience, but I would like to try some other hotels in town if my son decides to attend Northland.

My wife and I just stayed there this past weekend. The view out our lake view room was fantastic. I could watch the sunset right from our bed. Only had a few cocktails at Molly Coopers downstairs but the deck outside was awesome and service fast and friendly.. Lobby is an easy walk from the small parking lot right out front. Though built in 1986, has the look of the grand old hotels of the past, lots of beautiful woodwork throughout. Great fireplace sitting area just off the lobby.. Will definitely stay here again on my next trip to the area.

It was a refreshing stopover. The Victorian ambience lends itself to reminiscing about another era. Lake Superior dominated the scene and nearby walking paths were pleasant and full of wildlife.The serving staff at Molly's pub were accommodating to guest' request. Hot tub and pool very relaxing -rooms clean-had hoped for a lake view, but enjoyed the deck view.

Hmm, everything about this place is rustic. It has a lot of history and don't forget to read all the history and note blurbs they have across the facility. This is probably the most definite way to look over the lake as the sun is setting. The beach is probably a mile walk from the place. There is a walgreens right opposite for all the missed out things. Contintental breakfast was not bad, but not something that you would want to, if you are in this part of WI. Two miles aways are some good local shops that you can get better food. Staff were friendly and good house keeping.

We spend a very enjoyable two nights at this hotel in early July. Our lakeside king room was very spacious with an outstanding view of the lake, marina, sunset. Staff was pleasant and helpful, lobby grand and beautiful, and they provide real plates and silverware at breakfast. Wonderful nature walking path along the lake for 2+ miles, great trees and flowers. Great experience.

Dusty, toilet ran, broken switch in the bathroom, lightbulb out. Location isn't great. The location on the bay is next to some industrial work with a sign to keep out of the water due to toxic contaminants. The staff was friendly, but the rooms are a bit cramped and not cleaned or maintained up to the standards you would expect from a chain hotel. There are better options down the road.

This is a very unique hotel. We enjoyed the antique furniture and pictures around the lobby and sitting rooms. The staff was very friendly and helpful. The room was nice and temp. was easily adjusted as needed. Breakfast was convenient and was open until 10:00 am. We were here while there was a band performing in the amphitheater next door. When we returned from our outing in the evening, there were no parking places for hotel guests left. The music folks took them all! We parked in the Walgreens across the street and moved our car back over around 10:00 pm. This was the only negative during our stay.

"Best Western Except for Breakfast"

We stayed here a week with family. The Hotel is located in the heart of Ashland, Wisconsin. The hotel is a majestic white building that sets on a harbor of Lake Superior. The hotel lobby is decorated in Victorian style with several interesting antiques. In front of the hotel is one of several murals on one of the buildings. A balcony and a deck provide wonderful views of the sunsets over Lake Superior. There is even a gazebo that is in back of the hotel with many steps that lead closer to the water. The rooms were small, clean, well-decorated, and our room had a wonderful view of the harbor. This is not a new hotel and the furnishings lend itself to the Victorian era. There is a restaurant on the premises with a good selection of menu items that are reasonably priced. There is a public beach on Lake Superior just a 15 minute drive away on the road in front of the hotel. The front desk hotel staff were very friendly, accommodating, and helpful. They provided a wealth of information regarding the town of Ashland. That provided information regarding the sites around Lake Superior. There are plenty of activities in the area such as hiking, biking, and other historical sites to see. The hotel front desk staff will be happy to help you learn as much about the small town and the beautiful surrounding Apostle Islands. In order to take full advantage of the beautiful views of Lake Superior, a room with a view is recommended. The only drawback to the stay at the hotel was the marginal free breakfast that was available each morning until 10:00 AM. The selection of items were limited and the staff were lackadaisical and unattentive. This was disappointing as the hotel front staff were very kind and helpful. However, there are several little cafes near the hotel and in the area that serve a reasonable and delicious breakfast. If staying here more than a couple of days, I would recommend eating somewhere else.

The hotel is a historic one. Rooms are small and the beds are lumpy. The location is beautiful and if you enjoy history it is an interesting place. The breakfasts were okay nothing special but works for a free breakfast. Rooms were quiet and the pool was nice. Beautiful deck off the back to spend time looking at the lake. There is a great walking or biking path right by it that was easy to get to. Lots of things around it gas stations, restaurants, shopping.

Good hotel! Staff was welcoming and helpful. Several options for breakfast both in items to eat and locations to have breakfast. We ate out on the veranda overlooking the bay - very nice. Needed a roll out bed and was accommodated with one. Would definitely recommend this hotel to others visiting the Lake Superior / Apostle island area.

We had a queen room with jacuzzi tub which was inviting after a long car ride. Our room was huge, bed comfortable and clean. Very nice views. We will certainly stay here again. The restaurant downstairs had a decent menu and good prices. Free breakfast in the morning, typical breakfast food available.

Best place to stay when visiting Northern Wisconsin. Not far from Bayfield and the annual music festival. Good location for planning outdoor activities in the Lake Superior vicinity. Fine restaurant on the property. Many rooms overlook the lake. Free parking. Helpful staff. Room sizes vary from single bed rooms to large suites.

Stayed here for 2 nights on a work related trip. The hotel is situated on the shore of Lake Superior, with beautiful views of the lake and the nearby marina. The rooms are comfortable and clean, and the staff, for the most part, very friendly. The complimentary breakfast is standard but the coffee was really bad! It's more like coffee colored water. I pointed this out to the serving staff there but they were very non-responsive, or just answered in a very abrupt manner. This is not a deal breaker to stay here.....just make sure to buy your coffee at one of the coffee houses or cafes close by! The wifi in the rooms is great for working travelers.

The Hotel Chequamegon is a hotel that has a lot of character, which you can see from the pictures. To me, it was worth upgrading to the water view room, as the sunsets were spectacular right out the window overlooking the harbor. The rooms were clean (with the exception of the windows needing a good cleaning from the outside). Breakfast was very good, with the exception of the "make your own pancake" machine - the pancakes were tough and bland. They also have a waffle maker and hot dishes - the first day was omelets and sausages, and the next day was biscuits and sausage gravy. The air conditioner was clean and worked well - keeping a steady fan without the clunking that often wakes me up in a hotel room. Housekeeping was excellent. The restaurant on the lower level was good, but a little overpriced for the quality of food. But those views... there's a patio overlooking the water, check it out at sunset. The property is right on a walking/biking path in the center of Ashland. I am very happy with our stay and would definitely stay again.

Had a comfortable stay in the whirlpool bayside suite. Tons of room and super clean. Had drinks from the bar out on the deck both nights we stayed and a dinner. Food was good especially the coconut shrimp starter. We seen a couple of honeymoon couples enjoying watching the sunset. We were with a group, but would love to go there for a romantic getaway. Breakfast was adequate, but I am a picky eater. The rest of the group of 10 enjoyed. Thank you Best Western for the nice memories.

"Will not be staying at this hotel again"

We stayed only one night at this hotel. The night we arrived, we had dinner at the restaurant. The food was average but the service was terrible. When I complained to the front desk staff, their response was "oh yeah I know, they are understaffed again". The next morning, while in the room, my 12 y/o son found a couple of bugs crawling on his leg and arm. He could not get out of there soon enough. Needless to say, we will not be coming back.

Stayed here on overnight while going to the Big Top. Have shuttle right from the door. Nice to be able to relax and not have to worry about driving and parking for the show. Also would recommend the South Shore Brewery for a wonderful meal

Place is period dark but rooms r clean and staff friendly. Breakfast is standard hotel breakfast so lots of choices and certainly adequate. View from decks out back . If weather good, u can sit out from bar and dine. Pool cold and spa just warm.

End of a week-long trip starting in Michigan. Reserved room before we left on our trip as we had been here before and loved the convenience and cleanliness of this hotel. Within walking distance to Catholic Church, main downtown, walking/biking paths. Great views of the lake from room and loved all the historic pictures throughout the hotel.

The hotel was well kept inside and out. The rooms were clean and nicely decorated and the beds were comfortable. The gym was nice too. I had a great time in the hot tub and splashed around in the pool for a bit which was relaxing. The view from my room was amazing and the view from the pool and hot tub area was very nice too. Have a deck by the restaurant where you can have your lunch or dinner and relax.

"Do they really clean the room"

Qualify your people on how to clean a room. My room had an article of clothing on the floor and an un-made bed on the second day of my stay. This was not mine and when I confronted the front desk (GM) he made it seem like a very trivial issue. He came to my room and picked up what I thought was underwear, and found it was a pair of kids clothes and said it was probably in the sheets. Did I sleep in a bed that was not changed after the previous guest? Is this the way Best Western conducts business? Should I be treated like my concerns are trivial?

Lovely hotel, very friendly staff. Prompt check in and out. Beds comfortable, rooms clean. Good pressure showers with tall shower head (important for us tall folks!). Location great. Centrally located in Ashland, walking distance to in town attractions/restaurants. My only suggestion for improvement is the breakfast. They have range of milk, juices but limited hot meal options. Eggs are every other day from what I gathered and are dry (folded over mini omelettes). Otherwise a mediocre biscuit and gravy option is offered with hard boiled eggs as only egg option those days. Basic toast options. They did have a pancake maker which was interesting but resulting pancakes were mediocre in taste/texture. However, overall for a free breakfast, not bad.

"Excellent off the beaten path hotel experience"

Friendly and helpful staff, great views of the lake (if you have a lakeside room), adequate fitness room with a treadmill, elliptical, and bicycle machine. Weight stack was in need of repair, apparently not many folks come here to work out! Located on the 10 mile biking/talking trail down the lakefront and through town. In spite of the wooden construction it was surprisingly quiet. Only drawback--windows don't open, probably for good reason (safety). Beds fairly comfy, pillows were foam only, AC was fine with a nice quiet fan that you could run for background sound during the evening. Didn't watch TV (why turn on the TV at a place like this?

WE CELEBRATED OUR 47TH ANNIVERSARY AT THIS GRAND HOTEL .. WHAT A BEAUTIFUL VIEW OF THE BAY! The hotel itself has a lot of history . This was our first trip to Ashland Wisconsin. "North Country Ritz"

We arrived after a long, drive. We visit the Ashland area a couple times a year. We were given a very nice room with a beautiful view of Lake Superior. The hotel itself has a lot of " vintage hotel " charm. I think it is the highest priced hotel in town but we think it's worth it. The pool area and hot tub also face the lake and have always been clean and in good working order. The restaurant and bar are downstairs near the pool with outside seating. We love this place. It's comfortable ! It's not 5 star but pretty darn close.

I've stayed here several times now and will likely stay here again. It's nicely decorated, clean, quiet, and right smack in the shores of beautiful Lake Superior. We ate at the restaurant in the hotel and it was very good, and reasonably priced. Highly recommend hotel and restaurant.

I've driven by here for years and never stopped. I had a meeting here and it gave me a reason for a visit. Rooms are average BW, nothing too special. Hotel overall is amazing and in great condition. The parlor and deck behind the front desk should not be missed. In regards to the conference room... Room was small but good, and catering was fine.

Nice hotel to stay at. Complimentary cookies and coffee in the lobby. Rooms are very clean and have nice decor. TV remotes come in a little pouch that says "Fresh remote for you" or something like that. Nothing sucks like a soiled remote. Will definitely stay here again.

"Wonderful view of the lake and 1 block from the city"

We had 12 foot high ceilings with a comfortable bed, good linen and a nice clean bathroom. We enjoyed the location and walked 3 blocks to a nice restaurant and then on the way home saw "The Huntsman" so good all around. Lovely quaint town with this hotel as a restful way to explore. Also a wonderful patio.

Overall I enjoyed the stay at this reconstructed nostalgic hotel. Room was comfortable and roomy! I did not enjoy the meal that I had in the restaurant, it may have just been that specific entree (Herb encrusted walleye (could't taste the walleye)) because I heard other customers rave about the the food they had. Free breakfast was really above other places that I stayed. Probably the best place in town. Nice location on the lake and right on a walking path.

The stay and up grade was great except for the phone not working right. Other then that it was a great stay as I normally get during the spring stay. I always stay at the Best Western during the spring show. The last summer show is not good because of parking problems.

"Average hotel in town with below average hotels"

This is likely the best hotel in town. With it's on-site dining, it is top hotel in the region. All wood construction, leading to noisy building. You can hear everything around you, and this can be a problem for light sleepers. The walking in front of the room, upstairs, and for me (by the desk) made a 10 night stay seem like an eternity.

Great place to stay. Charming interior. Quite. Solid. Nice rooms and a great breakfast. Friendly staff. Early check in allowed so we could head to the festival. Molly Cooper restaurant in the lower level was adequate for food. Great brew selection. And nice to kick back. Prom was going on, but we had no noise issues at all.

I love the Best Western brand and as a reward member have spent many nights across the country in them, so I was SHOCKED to find mold in the bathroom of this hotel when I went to take a shower. The front desk receptionist was nice and immediately reaccomodated us into another room right away. I am not sure when the last time the unit with the mold was assigned as dust webs were also noted above the bed. Next morning power went out in the east end of town and I could not shower in the clean BR...Stay was ok otherwise but it really has put doubt in this brand for me.

Very nice room, but the hit was the huge shower stall, it was terrific. It also is an easy drive up to Bayfield for lunch or dinner, and a great drive too. Great place to start or finish your drive around Lake Superior

Great Hotel that is walking distance to the Lake, Downtown and Parks. Sits right on the Chequamegon Bay and the sunsets and sunrises from the deck are great. Great family room options, but you need to ask for them.

"Sad Circumstance, Happy Stay"

We stayed at this property at the end of January in order to attend the funeral of a loved one. As a hotel manager myself I have high standards and expectations of any property that I stay at and the Hotel Chequamegon met and exceeded those expectations by providing a comfortable room, excellent service, and an overall great experience. Every employee (Housekeeping, Maintenance, Front Desk, and Bar staff) I encountered on any of the shifts took the time to speak with me, even if it was just a friendly hello. This made me feel very welcome in a place far from home with my wife and daughters. This left enough of an impression on me that I took the level of service I received here and I applied it to my own staff when I got home. The management staff was wonderful as well and I wanted to thank them again for being able to assist us in such a trying time. "Charming place"

A rennovated railroad hotel that's really charming. The lake facing views are great, as you are up high on the bluff. There is a breakfast buffet on the first floor, and a restaurant bar on the lower level open for lunch, dinner, and drinks.

"Nice Retreat after Book Across the Bay"

We picked this hotel because we participated in the Book Across the Bay race, and it was close to the start of the race. I'm not sure of the history associated with this hotel, It looks like an older hotel, but it could have just been built recently to look that way. In any event the hotel does have a lot of the historic lodge feel about it. The staff were very friendly and knowledgeable. After we checked in we were told that there was one elevator in the lobby. This elevator is slow and doesn't serve the hotel at full capacity very well. My advice is to request a room on the first floor or use the stairs as we did. The rooms a well appointed with Microwave, Refrigerator and our room had a lake/bay view. The bed was comfortable and the pillows were a little too overstuffed and firm for our liking, but better than other hotels. They had a sink in and out of the bathroom which was nice for getting ready in the morning. Overall this is a very nice hotel and room to stay in. Our only issues (they were very minimal but worth noting) were as follows: The second key card they made us didn't work (easily remedied). The water pressure in the sink outside the bathroom was very low and the sink leaked water from the control handle on top. The hangers in the armoure were the type that were in two pieces so you wouldn't want to steel the hanger, but they fell off the second piece that was on the rod very easily. We picked up our clothes several time due to this. There was a small piece of plaster missing on one of the wall that exposed a nail head. There was a small crack in the ceiling plaster. There was a lack of outlets which they handled by installing on of the plugins that make a normal outlet have six sockets instead of 2. There was only one light switch to turn off the two lights on either side of the bed. The above issues however do not overcome the overall appeal of this hotel. It is comfortable, quiet and clean. A very nice place to stay on a very cold evening in February. It was wonderful to return to this room after our 6.1 mile excursion on the ice in the Book Across the Bay race. Breakfast the next morning was bustling but not crowed and the selection was good, We really enjoyed the eggs, english muffin, yogurt and skim milk that we had. We were kind of confused at checkout. We received a receipt from the hotel but had prepaid our hotel through Hotwire. They gave us Hotwire's receipt for our stay. This is the first time in a long time that we have received a receipt when we prepaid. I understand that it's probably pretty routine to provide a receipt to everyone, but they may avoid confusion if they don't provide receipts to prepaid guests. In conclusion, this is a very nice hotel and we would be happy to stay here again if the need/want arises.

Poorly trained, unprofessional employees in appearance & behavior. Mediocre rooms, tiny outdated baths, too much over-sized furniture for small lodging rooms. Great place to hole up! Clean and charming. Restaurant and lounge make the stay comfortable without having to travel outside anywhere. Fitness center was a bonus too. Cookies on arrival are a nice touch to. Staff shows they care.

One of my all time favorite Wisconsin hotels, harking back to another era but with modern amenities. The library room located behind the "check in" desk with a multi-directional view of Lake Superior is one of the interior highlights. Great place to relax after a day of snowshoeing or hiking. Love the historic room numbers.

The staff continue to impress, and the property is one of our favorites. Its strong sense of history and lovely interior (especially the library behind the check in desk) make it a fun place to relax after a full day in the Lake Superior region.

Well, you're lack of a specific problem doesn't help us. Where did you have a problem with heat? What amenities or service was deficient? We did have some complaints about the pool. We checked it and it was at 82 degrees F. On checking for the perfect temperature for a pool, it is 77-82 degrees F. They recommend 71 for a diving competition. So it is maybe cooler than you like, but it is what is recommended for a pool for laps and working out. A recreational pool sometimes has a recommendation of 84 degrees F. After taking the actual temperature and finding it to be 82, the heater was turned up to 84. My wife and I swam in it just 2 nights ago and it was fine. It does feel cold if you get out of the hot tub then get in the pool, but it is a 10 degree difference, so that is to be expected.

"Scalding Water Issue"

I stayed in this hotel while visiting relatives in the area. I chose this hotel because a prior stay was enjoyable and the location was ideal. I had forgotten that the beds took some getting used to - very firm! The continental breakfast was fantastic with a lot of variety and the attendant kept the dining area super clean. During this stay, the hotel was having issues with their water. It was scalding hot with no cold water in sight. This went on for two nights and on the second night, I had to wash in stages as standing under the shower head would have caused burns. Some guests had to shower in different rooms as this seemed to be a location issue. The other issue was that our key cards were inactivated before we checked out at 11:00 AM. We had to find a housekeeper to let us back into the room so that we could grab the rest of our things. I would have appreciated being offered a discount or refund for the inconvenience of the hot water issue. Not being able to enjoy showering each evening was a big disappointment.

Dasha, key cards deactivate all the time for various reasons. As for the hot water issue, apparently a pump malfunctioned and put so much pressure in the hot water line that it pushed the hot water backwards through the hot water tank and into the cold water feed. I am not a plumber, but that is what I was told and it makes sense to me. As for a discount we have been giving them out, but I have no record of a "Dasha" staying here. Was the room registered under another name?

My husband and I stayed here because he was on business. We thought we were going to stay in bayfield but decided to come back here. Very clean and quite. Love the view of the water. Close to the brewery. Close walk to downtown and rite across the street from a walgreens. Breakfast was ok.

This is by far the best looking hotel in Ashland. The only down size is that the beds are not as comfortable as one would hope. We joked that it was like sleeping on the box spring when we first laid down. We were also a little disappointed that we paid for a queen suit that promised better views from our window, hoping to wake up to Lake Superior, but we were greeted with the parking lot instead.

We are sorry you didn't find the beds as comfortable as you expected. As for the view, when we sell our rooms we differentiate between lake side and city side (the parking lot). The weekend you stayed the difference in price was only $7. There was the fact though that a wedding had taken up all the Lakeside rooms your 2nd night. so if you made your reservation after they did, there wasn't any Lakeside rooms left. My suggestion is to call us directly to make your reservations, the websites do not always make accurate descriptions of the rooms. Also I suspect they move you to a room that is available, I just do not have control of them.

Beautiful spot right on Lake Superior. Hotel is very unique in that it has a 'Grand Hotelesque' look and old feel with antiques scattered throughout the hotel. I read many of the reviews before picking this hotel and asked for a room away from the ice machine and elevator and had a nice lake view on the 2nd floor. By the time I got to the hotel, I was starving and decided to eat at the restaurant which was casual but very good. I would have loved to have sat outside but that wasn't an option. Beds and bedding are comfortable. Great wall a/c and heater unit that has a fan that will stay on all night which I loved. Furnishings are old but adequate. The desk does have a lamp with plug-ins readily available which is nice as I'm traveling for business. Breakfast was hot and cold and a good variety with real dishes and silverware. There isn't an attention to detail .... especially in the cleaning. I'm not sure when they've wiped down the lighting in my room or cleaned some of the bugs up in the corner of the bathroom. I used the stairs on the west side of the building and they gave me the creeps.....not very clean. Overall, the hotel is very average and at $115 per night, I would expect more. Oh....and don't expect the staff to say hello to you....you have to make the initial connection. Very surprised by that.

I was in the area on business and was recommended this hotel. It was great. This is the most unique Best Western I have ever encounter. The architecture was outstanding and the location is great. The hotel staff was great. They were very accommodating when I went to check out even with the yoyo talking on the cell phone at the counter instead of moving out of line. They were gracious with him and were able to get me checked out even thought he was clueless.

This is a charming hotel - from the outside and in the lobby - but very bare bones inside. Not worth the extra money for a lakeside room (obstructed views) and the service is slow both at front desk and in restaurant. Not worth the exta $ from the other chain properties on the lake.

Upon our arrival we were greeted and checked in by Stan. Super nice man. He was informative about where the bar, pool and other amenities were located. There is always coffee and cookies available by the front desk. We headed upstairs to our room. The room was a king suite with a jacuzzi very clean smelled great a little warm but easy fix, we turned the air on and heat off. The view from the room was awesome. The bed is a hit and miss seemed to be a little hard for my liking which made it difficult for me to sleep. The pillows were way to soft and my head seemed to sink in the middle leaving huge clumps of pillow on each sides of my head. The sheets were really nice and soft and smelled fresh.The tub took me almost 30 mins to get enough water in it for enjoy. But one perk is you will not run out of hot water. Mollys Coopers bar and grill my husband and I had a hard time rating. We arrived on all you can eat fish night. I ordered an awesome bloodymary loaded with cheese, pickled asparagus, mushrooms,olives, a pickle and pickled onions made by Travis the bartender. It was really great he was very attentive and very friendly. I decided to order the all you can eat fish which came with french fries and a salad. I went with cod which was perfectly cooked the first time. They gave me two pieces after they were finished I requested more and was given 1 piece which upon inspection was not cooked all the way. I waited 10 mins for that one piece and had to wait another for a fully cooked piece. By this time I was aggravated and did not want anymore seemed like a waste of time. We just took our one piece to go. While sitting at the bar we noticed somethings going on waitresses seemed not interested in there job. Theres one sitting to my left at the bar playing on her phone. Another coming from the dining room complaining how they do not wanna work in there. Our visit to the bar on Sunday was even more amusing. We have some new waitresses. The only waitress that seemed like she actually cared " Hailey" was the only one running back and forth gettiing drinks from the bartender. While some playing on there phones once again. Even saw one having champagne while shes supposed to be working. On a good note the chowder was the best I have ever tasted. The continental breakfast was really good cheese omelet, cereal, bagels, toast, fresh pancakes made, juices, fruit and so much more. Only Sunday morning wish there would have been some kind of warning that there was going to be a charter bus full of disrespectful teenagers spilling food everywhere. We ate upstairs due to that. Overall experience was great we enjoyed ourselves and would visit again. Great decor and huge decks makes for a home like stay.

I am sorry for your experience with the fish fry and I do not know what to say other than it does get very busy and I will address it with Molly's staff. As for the teenagers, they were here to visit the college and the group I believe you are referring to was very polite to me the night before. And they must have been gone by the time I came in around 8, so they were probably very hurried. Getting a bunch of 16-17 years olds up and moving is a challenge. That does not excuse them though, as alumni I will address that with the college also.

We booked Hotel Chequamegon in Ashland, Wisconsin for a one night fall color getaway tour. The atmosphere is similar to the Grand Hotel on Mackinac Island. Although this hotel was built in 1986, they did a good job of creating charm that makes it feel historic. Restaurant decks overlook Lake Superior. The King Room with a jacuzzi in the corner of the room was the perfect way to end a day hiking in the Wisconsin Northwest fall leaves. The room was spacious, clean, comfortable and romantic and had a beautiful view of Lake Superior. We began our morning with a walk along the Lake on the paved walkway right outside of the hotel. Complimentary breakfast was decent - standard hotel fare. Staff were all very friendly and accommodating. We'll definitely return to the Hotel Chequamegon whenever we're in the area.

We went on a spur of the moment trip to see the Fall colors. This Hotel was a deal through Hotels.com. The view of Lake Superior was fantastic. The room was clean and quiet. The bathroom was small but clean. The bed was comfortable. We were a little to close to the ice machine so that was noisy, we only noticed it in the morning. Check in was slow. We had a snack in the bar area and a cocktail. They were very nice and food was good.

We stayed here because of the hotel's location on the lake. The views of Lake Superior from the hotel and terraces are beautiful. We would not stay here again though because there are too many inconveniences especially for the price. The parking area is small and when we returned at 6:30 one evening we had to search the entire lot until we found the last available space. The coffee maker in the room is placed in an area that doesn't have an electrical outlet and we ended up placing it on the floor. The bathroom counter is quite small and the toilet paper stand has to be moved back and forth so it's within reach and then away from the shower and sink. We have stayed in many truly old hotels that are much better arranged for guests. The final blow was the breakfast that included old hard oranges for fruit and a pancake maker that made gummy pancakes.

Sorry for the perceived inconvenience. The parking lot is small, but adequate unless the restaurant is busy or we are hosting a special event such as a wedding. So I am sorry our success in that area made it hard to find a parking space, but I understand you did find one. We are working on a solution. And there is no need to put the coffee maker on the floor. There is an outlet next to the desk/table in every room. Where the coffee maker is stored has only outlets for the microwave and mini frig. We can not plug in a multi outlet like you might at home due to code. Also there is coffee in the lobby 24 hours a day. So although we can understand that sometimes you want your privacy, it is hard for us to be friendly and have a conversation if you lock yourself in your room all weekend.

Chlorine pool slippery floor pool area. King rooms are small unless you go with a suite. Charming character Hotel. Bar staff seemed unkempt with tattoo down her arm. Not too sure about the layout of the bar/lounge/restaurant. There is an elevator, so it was easy to get from one floor to the other. Breakfast area was very nice and a good variety of warm and cold food.

For the price, not impressed. Dripping faucets kept me awake and the staff was not too friendly. The convenience of the location was great. The chowder in the restaurant was good. I had to call to get our bill adjusted after we got home..

Sorry you feel that way, our prices are in line with other establishments for that weekend. As for adjusting your bill, you were probably one of the ones who had made several reservations under the same name and one person paid for both rooms. A simple fix and one that could have been done before you left if you had checked the bill we left under your door.

We stayed at the Hotel Chequamegon for one night while on a business trip. After a nice long ride we were happy to arrive, and the location on the water was beautiful. We were more than a little surprised to go to the front desk and to be greeted by a middle aged man who gruffly said "ID and credit card". No greeting, no welcome, no please or thank you, no smile, nothing except "ID and credit card". We obliged and were given keys to our room, and a snarky comment about a $500 charge if we smoked in the room (we don't smoke, but whatever). Our room was very oddly laid out---the tall cabinet with microwave and refrigerator had been placed directly in front of one of the windows, and the TV was on top of the dresser and completely blocked the mirror. The bathroom had been refurbished with a cheap, chipping paint job on the tub. The room was not as clean as I would have liked (dusty) and it had perhaps the roughest toilet paper and facial tissue I have ever encountered anywhere. My spouse said the continental breakfast was pretty average, so I opted for a local coffee shop and bakery in the morning. Overall, there are other options in the area, and I would probably try other spots in the future. I can handle average rooms, but don't need the "snark". A little greeting and a smile can go a long way!

Stayed one night on our way through town. The rooms were big and clean with no issues. The convenient location helped us carry on our way in the morning and the continental breakfast served our needs before we left. Would stay again for sure.
