Best Western The Hotel Chequamegon

This hotel is located right on the South shore of Lake Superior. I asked for a room on the upper floor away from the elevator & facing the bay & the receptionist was very accommodating. The room was very comfortable with a good view of the marina. The WIFI was good & the free breakfast was better than expected.

I have always wanted to stay at this historic hotel. From the moment we checked in to leaving the following day, we were treated with kindness. Michael was very helpful when we checked in even as we asked for a room change, it was done with ease. Later on in the evening Amanda, the nighttime clerk was as accommodating as Michael was earlier in the day. The breakfast is one of the finest I have had while traveling. The Selection of different foods allowed for a healthy breakfast.

For years we have travelled through the community of Ashland Wisconsin on the south shores of Lake Superior and have often made not of the aesthetics of this property when we travel by. It has that quaint, back in time look to it. We recently had an opportunity to stay here. We were glad we did. The hotel lived up to the image it represents when driving past.

The room was so hot! It had to have been 90 degrees. We had to turn on the air conditioning to get some relief. The breakfast was disgusting with cheap, nasty food. After a couple bites we both threw the food away. I was very disappointed. This used to be THE hotel in Ashland. Not anymore! The restaurant was closed. The lounge filled with foul-mouthed, loud men. The room was nothing special, just like any other motel room. For the prices they charge in the summer, it would be even more of a disappointment.

Walking distance to downtown, excellent staff and clean rooms. Needed information on where to go for dinner staff had many suggestions for us. You can have room with lake view or downtown view. They also have nice breakfast

I love this hotel. Beautiful location overlooking Lake Superior at Chequemegan Bay. I stay here every time I go to Ashland. The people are great. The breakfast is great. I never eat breakfast but I always eat it there.

STAY HERE if you are anywhere near Ashland. Great beds, great pillows, excellent breakfast. Iconic old hotel has a super lobby and the rooms are unique. there is a very good restaurant downstairs. The hotel is right on the lake and the views from the room are great. There is a terrace if you want to sit outside and enjoy the lakefront.

If they would let me, I would move into this hotel! It is gorgeous! Best night's sleep I have had in a long time. Clean pull. Great views. The only thing I wish is that the restaurant would have been open, but they did have a complimentary breakfast and the bar area was open. There are also plenty of restaurants nearby. I LOVED this place.

If you stay here, beware! The front desk staff gave another guest a working hotel key to our room, that guest walked in to our room while we were there and then that guest did not leave for quite some time. The front desk staff did nothing to make the situation right.

Stayed one night, still here actually but need to share. Good location, beautiful lobby, rooms nice but dated; bed is comfy, pillows are horrible, washrooms dated and lacking good quality towels and toiletries, 1980s carpeting, cheap plastic glasses. Night is young so I won't go on. On-site restaurant is not functioning currently, “complimentary” breakfast doesn't open until 7:00 (we'll be long gone) I feel a little ripped off., and lady at desk just smiled but didn't really listen or care.

Beautiful vintage building with very friendly and dedicated staff. Breakfast was very good. We didn't try the bar but the sitting area with view of the lake was amazing. Great location. Walking distance from everywhere. The room was large and comfortable

My wife picked out this hotel and seemed very pleased with it, me not so much. It is an old hotel, historic likely and all that goes with that. It does have a great lakefront view off the back of the hotel and seems to be right in town. Although we didn't use the indoor pool, it did look lovely. The staff seemed to be very friendly and attentive. There seemed to be a lot of antiques throughout the place. Our room was off the front of the hotel, next to the elevator, which was a little hesitant in its operation but we didn't hear it in our room. Our room was old, small, oddly laid out with a bathroom to match. The breakfast was about average. If you like historic experiences like staying in the Grand Hotel you will like it here.

Beautiful hotel but the bathrooms are so small you can't open the door without hitting the toilet. Why do hotels with a sitting room put the TV in the bedroom. You have to lie in bed to watch TV. Put a TV in both the sitting room and bedroom too, if it has a sitting area. Breakfast was good but would have liked some kind of home fry potatoes.

This is a beautiful, historic hotel that looks out over the lake. The lobby furnishings and historic information are really a bonus. There are decks overlooking Lake Superior, and you can eat dinner or enjoy a drink outside. Our high-ceiling room was beautiful too. The staff was friendly and welcoming. And the breakfast buffet was very good - fresh bacon was served! Plentiful food and attentive staff. I stay at a lot of hotels, and this one was lovely.

This hotel accommodates families well - 2 adults with 2 young adult kids. The view, the breakfast, and the service are exceptional! Did I mention the view!!! So peaceful, and a perfect veranda for morning coffee overlooking the great lake!

My wife and I throughly enjoyed our stay at the Hotel Cheuamegon in Ashland,WI on the shores of Lake Superior. The staff was more than accommodating, the bartender made fantastic drinks. The property is beautiful and well maintained.

We stayed at this hotel in Ashland and very much enjoyed our stay. Of the 5 Best Westerns we stayed at ,this was the best. Lots of history and antiques. Beautiful patio overlooking Lake Superior. The room was very nicely decorated. Complimentary breakfast was very good and they have a nice indoor pool with lots of patio seating. The young lady at reception was extremely nice and helpful.

The architecture of this Best Western is 1800s clapboard. It is amazing. Its like walking back in time for a Lake weekend. The attention to detail for all services is excellent. The restaurant and bar have great service and menu options. The breakfast room has many choices and is very clean. It's very quiet and there are places to walk. It's close to town. Wonderful experience.

Fun to stay in a hotel that seemed like a very old mansion or property that still retains some of its original elements, like a large porch overlooking the bay, and a living room with a working fireplace in the hotel lobby. The room that I occupied was a spacious, corner room, as well, which was very classic and setting-appropriate (simple yet somehow old-fashioned (armchair, curtains, etc.)) in terms of its decor. As an older place, the walls are somewhat thin so it is important to be considerate of one's fellow hotel guests here. Overall, very nice!

My family and I were getting away for the weekend and heard this was fairly nice for an older facility and the onsite restaurant had rave reviews. The room I reserved was not available so a cot had to be brought in for my grandson. The beds were comfortable, the ice convenient, and the view lovely but someone should get the spider webs off the windows if you want to charge extra for a lake view. The staff was helpful and friendly. I felt the pool area was unsafe even with my walker. I can't recommend the prime rib special or the pasta at the restaurant but they apparently make a yummy children's grilled cheese.

This is an old fashioned hotel that has been updated. The views on the back deck are fantastic. The rooms are typical and could use updating. There are limited choices in this area. The staff were friendly and helpful. The price was steep, but it was a good stay. It's a plus that they have an onsite restaurant with a good menu. We would stay again.

This facility was Clean, Quint and the staff were friendly and competent. The location was central and easy to get in and out of the parking lot. The Lake view room was a wonderful and fabulous addition.

We stayed at the hotel twice in the same week and had two completely opposite experiences. The hotel is in a beautiful location, right off the lake so is very inviting. On Monday, we walked through the doors and noticed a strange smell. Upon exiting the elevator onto third floor, and especially our room, we were hit with a very pungent odor. The room reeked of air freshener and mildew. I have allergies and am sensitive to smells so I wasn't quite sure what to do. The hotel clerk was very rude when I voiced my concern about the smell and told her about my allergies. She did spray the room down with vinegar and water but if I hadn't been part of a large group I would've been down the road. She was not very hospitable. The windows were filthy and the room just felt unclean. My group returned for another night's stay that Friday. I was dreading going back there after my previous experience. I walked through the door to a very fresh-smelling lobby. Our room was on the first floor this time and it was lovely and smelled fresh. The hotel clerk was very pleasant and accommodating. He was a breath of fresh air compared to the unpleasant woman desk clerk from Monday. The free breakfast was good; a typical Best Western Buffet with hot and cold choices

While on route to Canada we found ourselves in Ashland in a cold, windy rain storm. Upon seeing this beautiful hotel with a restaurant, we decided to stop. Luckily, they had a room with a beautiful view of Lake Superior.

We were attending a Wedding from 300 miles away. The setting on Lake Superior was beautiful. The Breakfast was hot and varied somewhat each day. We were very happy that coffee was available in the lobby and fresh cold water was also available. Wile it seemed pricey at first, the setting more than made up for the price.

The room was great and could use an updated mattress. Service was wonderful and very friendly. We are already planning our next trip. We bought some drinks from the liquor store down the street because the bar was closed and sat on the deck. It was perfect!

Loved our lake view room. Hotel is beautiful if you like older architecture. Had a great outing to Madeline Island! Very nice property with plenty of outdoor seating. Food was delicious! Great setting with easy access to walking trails. Never spent any time in Ashland, thankful we did. Definitely would come back!

The hotel common areas were beautiful, inviting, and clean. The entire staff was friendly, courteous, professional, and accommodating. The hotel is located on the bay and provides a relaxing setting on the back veranda with beautiful sunset views. The room was clean and spacious. The breakfast had a wide variety of hot &cold options and was quite delicious.

Booked our July/August multi-day stay several months ago through Hotels.com. Same day I found a better rate through Expedia giving me two bookings. I cancelled the first booking but called the hotel to ensure they had me reservation (yes). I called a couple days before leaving home to confirm (second time). This time I was told both reservations had been cancelled and there were no rooms available. Speaking with Best Western the second time they confirmed someone saw the double booking so they cancelled it and was so sorry. After some sincere unhappiness expressed, they miraculously found a very tiny room street side with a queen size bed vs the king over the water room a had previously. To compensate me they offered a free meal at their restaurant. When we arrived we were disappointed at how tiny the room is. The room was steaming and we had no idea how to turn on the a/c which is situated six feet off the floor with the panel so high one can't read it (unless your 7 feet tall). I asked for help at the front desk and the two young people were engaged in anything other than customer service. I asked to speak with the manager so someone could help cool down this tiny room. The a/c is vey noisy. Today we left early and hung a clean room sign on our door. Eight hours later - surprise- no clean towels - nothing done. I would not recommend this hotel

Very nice hotel! I nicknamed it the "Grand" overlooking the marina and the lake! Beautiful sunset reflecting on the lake. Very nice restaurant/bar with friendly staff serving drinks and an excellent prime rib dinner. Continental breakfast was better than most, serving hot fresh food!

I really enjoyed the lobby and parlor area with a view of Lake Superior. This part of the hotel had a lot of character to it. Unfortunately, when I checked in, something odd happened. The lakeside room I had reserved had been given to someone else. Not sure how that happened. I wound up with a room facing the parking lot since there were no other lakeview rooms available . It was a perfectly adequate room but not what I had booked. The desk clerk was apologetic and gave me a free dinner at the hotel grill. I felt like maybe I should have gotten a discount on the room as well, but that's all I received. The property has a lot of charm to it, but given my experience, I can only award it three stars. I would also say that the rooms, or at least the room I stayed in, lacked the distinction of the lobby and parlor. This was a near miss for me.

This hotel is beautiful. I love that this has all the amenities of a Best Western, but all the charm of a really old fashioned hotel. The parlor and the on-site restaurant overlooking Chequamegon Bay really give this place character. I took one star off for the situation with the pullout sofa in the king bed room with the sofa. We were in a room near the corner of the hotel and because of the odd shape of the room and where the sleeper sofa was positioned, it could not pull out into a bed where it was. First, we hit the air conditioning unit, so we shimmied the sofa and tried again and hit the corner of the room. Finally, we angled the sofa pretty good and got the bed to pull out but it was quite hard to get around at that point. Also, we had linens for the pullout, but no pillows (?). The person at the front desk was extremely responsive when I came to ask for pillows and when he couldn't locate some immediately, he offered to bring them to us. Breakfast was also very good. Overall, it was a very nice stay.

It's so cool looking but needs some inexpensive and some expensive updates. Add power outlet lamp bases. Clean the mold around the faucets and drain. Replace the windows instead of duct taping, or better yet change the two small windows into one big one for the lake view. Don't have the drapes hide the view. Swap to a modern hotel hvac system. Improve noise proofing. Otherwise nice. And the chef in restaurant was maybe missing? Very standard limited menu and basic food but with really great service, so that was nice.

A beautifully-appointed property with elegant furnishings & decor. Our lakeview room on the 1st floor was very nice, with an extremely comfortable bed & upscale toiletries. Looking forward to returning.

The staff was extremely helpful. The room was very nice and comfortable. We also enjoy two wonderful nights in the restaurant/bar downstairs where service again was outstanding. We liked our server so much we specifically asked for him again. A shoutout to Jerrod. The brandy old fashioneds were great.

We enjoyed our stay at the Chequamegon but found the room rate pretty pricey. We are seniors, CAA and BW members and this made little difference. I don't know if this is because of covid that prices have gone up so much as we stayed here a couple of times before covid and it was much more reasonable.

We stayed for 2 nights, you do not get clean room towel service if you do not request it. Comfortable room, adequate breakfast. There is a nice walking path nearby along the lake. It's an old hotel but maintained quite well. Book well in advance.

Great location in Ashland, WI. Since our last stay, it could use some room updates. Our bathroom wall had splashes on it, baseboard could have used some cleaning there, as well. We stayed 2 nights and needed to ask for clean towels. (Because of Covid?) The second night the scary desk clerk was on the phone loudly chatting for a long period of time. I swore that he was outside in our hallway. I was kept awake by his inconsiderate behavior. He was back at it in the early a.m. (5:30-6:00) I peered out the door and was going to say something but decided not to… we left early anyway. Our room was quite close to the front desk. I gave this review a 4 because of the terrific lady in the breakfast room. The older lady in the breakfast room was terrific! Eggs, bacon,waffles, cereal, yogurt, juices, etc. were served. That was a plus. Plenty of parking ~

This hotel on Chequamagon Bay, a large arm of Lake Superior, looks like a traditional grand Great Lakes resort hotel. But in fact it was built in the 1980s (opened in 1986) to look like one but include modern conveniences and design. They did an excellent job in imitating the classic; the interior design calls up an earlier era, and many antique furnishings help the illusion. Location: in downtown Ashland, a small but regional center town in a former mining, now mostly tourist-based economy. Rooms: the more desirable rooms face Chequamagon Bay with scenic views of the bay and Bayfield Peninsula across it. On the opposite side of the hotel rooms face the standard urban scene of busy streets and stores in Ashland. Our room facing the lake was nicely appointed, a very comfortable king size bed, with a desk, lounge chair, higher than normal windows to capture the excellent view. Refrigerator and microwave were handy. Bathroom well appointed, above average shower. Everything was spotless, super-clean, a plus. Facilities: nice dining rooms (I did not eat at the restaurant), gym, etc. The free breakfast is slightly above average in range of choices. Negatives: we had a very slow checkin due to a temporarily shortage of staff (turned out to be the local high school graduation night). In the room there were three negatives that mattered enough to me to knock off a star. First, insufficient outlets. I had an iPhone, iPod Touch, and computer to charge, it was a chore to find enough functional empty outlets (ended up putting the bathroom into service overnight). The usual outlets on the desk lamp only worked when the lamp was turned on, making them unusable for overnight charging. There were no dedicated USB outlets. Second, the windows are sealed shut and do not open. Want fresh Lake Superior air? - forget it. In a big city hotel with stinky traffic that would make sense, but in a resort-oriented hotel looking right out onto one of the Great Lakes? Makes no sense, and wastes an opportunity. Which leads me to the third issue: the ONLY way to get a change of air in the room is by running the window HVAC unit, which was very noisy, too noisy for us to keep it on at night; it had no low speed quiet fan-only setting. I know such exist, since I had a very quiet one in a Best Western in the Twin Cities later in this same trip (where sealed windows close to an expressway make sense). These 3 problems were enough to take the shine off an otherwise excellent hotel, so I knocked off one star. To some people these issues might not matter but they did to us. Otherwise, though, a very comfortable and inviting hotel.

The staff went above and beyond to make our stay memorable. We had a wonderful view of sunsets by the lake. The stay exceeded our expectations. I can't wait to vacation there again. Highly recommended by all of us.

Beautiful hotel overlooking a marina. The hotel is furnished with antiques in public areas. Guest rooms are roomy, clean, and comfortable. Spacious deck on the lake side of the hotel. Restaurant in the lower level has both indoor and outdoor seating. Complimentary breakfast was very good with scrambled eggs and plenty of bacon. Real plates and silverware. We will definitely return.

The Hotel Chequamegon is a nice location with views of Chequamegon Bay and near Bayfield. Restaurant has a nice selection of food and beverages, but not open on Mondays. This was a business trip, but I have traveled to this area for vacations and this location is within easy commute to Bayfield and the Big Top Chautauqua.

Hotel Chequamegon is an almost Victorian looking inn with lovely details to find inside from the gorgeous woodwork to the specially decorated rooms. It offers modern comfort with appealing character. Seated right on the shore of Lake Superior the views inside and out are a thrill for the eyes.

A hotel with an old feel. Good helpers, working facilities, plenty of room to stretch. Clean beds and close to many exciting things in the area I still haven't tried the restaurant, but look forward to the day I do.

Comfortable hotel with unique rooms, Lake view, and antique furniture and decor in the lobby and “parlor” area!! Excellent central location. Very comfortable bedding. We always like our stay at Chequamegon!!

Overall great experience, hotel looks like a big mansion, a grand entrance decorated in early American and Victorian style furnishings, the room was small but nicely arranged with a very comfy bed, the bathroom was really small and might be challenging for larger guests, the lake view was of a marina and frozen lake which is probably really beautiful in the summer, room not super modern with extension cords used to make up for lack of outlets, some extra noise from the creaky floor boards above and the hallway, I wasn't able to access the internet. There is a bar and grill in the basement that looked fun with a great menu and beautiful views, breakfast started later than most at 7:00 and was just okay, had scrambled eggs and sausage, waffles, they could up the quality offered to match the hotel level, overall a great location to experience the area from, I will stay again

Our stay was great, until we left Sunday and the whole entire parking lot of the hotel had 6+ inches of snow and no one ever came to plow. Every vehicle that wasn't a truck, kept getting stuck. It was ridiculous. We kept trying to get out of the parking lot in different areas for almost a half hour.

We stayed here after visiting the Red Cliff ice caves and prior to heading back up to the ice road and Madeline Island. We enjoyed breakfast, the room/hotel temperature was very comfortable, and it was quiet during the night.

Third time we've stayed at this hotel. Its location is convenient, good breakfast, great view of the lake. But this time we were shocked to find the bottom sheet of the bed was so worn out that it was uncomfortably pilled. And I kept getting my hand caught in the ripped seam of the top sheet. We mentioned this when checking out and were told "Well, we have new sheets." Well, perhaps you should break them out of the package! I think housekeeping staff just needs a bit of training and supervision. Try to always say something positive, so I'll add that the bartender made terrific rye old-fashioneds! Expensive, but tasty.

Great Staff! Wonderful experience, nice hot breakfast, the Grill restaurant was very good. We checked in during a blizzard, hubby having surgery the next morning, I could only drop him off and returned to hotel. Horrible feeling, but staff and others were amazing. His surgery went longer then expected, staff and manager were great, double checking the weather and no hurry to check out. Thank You will stay there again!!

We stayed here in October of 2021 on a planned vaction. Our room was on the second floor looking out over Chequamegon Bay on Lake Superior. Our room had a hot tub which was nice after a cold day on the Lake touring the Apostle islands. We were within walking distance of the downtown shops and the Murals that adorn the buildings.

Overlooking Lake Superior, this old hotel a great place to stay. It has a lot of character, great views and a nice location in a cute northern Wisconsin town. The hotel has a very good restaurant and bar with outside seating available if weather permits. The only reason I rated it a 4 instead of a 5 is that the rooms (or at least mine) could use some renovation. It was comfortable, but a little paint and new carpeting would be ideal. The staff was friendly and the complimentary breakfast was tasty and plentiful. Be sure to take advantage of the hiking trail just below the hotel.

The Best Western in Ashland is a great place to stay if you are looking for a clean and quiet room with wonderful amenities provided right at the hotel. The fitness room and pool were very relaxing. I loved the lounge/sitting area upstairs overlooking the bay, the room was well kept and provided a great view of the lake and comfortable overnight stay and the staff were very friendly.

The history of this town and hotel is not to be missed. yes,its like the Stanley Hotel,in ESTES PARK COLORADO!and other super nice places ,similar to the Grand Hotel..of Mac..great place to unwind and spend some time.but without the huge price tag. We stayed the weekend in the upper third floor rooms and were VERY comfortable!and welcome,by ALL... We can not say enough about the warm reception we had from the staff...!and the great conversations, about the history of the hotel ..really interesting history.Just ask and read up a bit ,its sort of like going back in time,but staying in 5 star accommodations... Kuddos to ALL the staff ,who try very hard to make you feel welcome,we WILL stay here again, as this hotel is really an overlooked gem! If you like history,freindly folks , VERY, special imported lobby antiques,(take pics) as well as great drinks and a dining experience,to brag about..with superior views ..of well..lake superior..do not miss this spot . (in house) breakfast had more healthy fare then expected,and put forth by very nice people. great experience! hey staff..keep it up!you made all the difference for us! bill and mechelle

Love this hotel. Always nice people, great breakfast, and comfy beds! The only "complaint" I can make is the AC/heater filters are always caked with dust. Otherwise a very great place with an amazing view.

Just a very solid place to lay your head down for the evening. Breakfast was very adequate. Clean Place. I would highly recommend you give this place a shot. We did not try the Grill as we went elsewhere, but folks we spoke to said it was very good.

The view from my room was very nice. The hotel itself leaves you feeling like you just entered the 1920s. I enjoyed the old charm feel, but my room could use some minor updates. I also utilized the fitness center and placement of the equipment should be changed so that the person exercising doesn't have their back to the entrance (I felt a little uneasy during my workout) especially since it is located in the basement. Otherwise, I enjoyed my brief stay.

The staff is always friendly location is perfect the view is amazing the hotel and property is always very clean and welcoming at all times the food is great staff is always very helpful with anything that needs attention so happy the Covid restrictions are in the past

The restaurant downstairs and complimentary breakfast are amazingly good. We were working south of Ashland by about an hour and this hotel made it worth the extra drive time to have all the comforts of home with good food!

Excellent, clean hotel right on the lake. Walking distance to downtown Ashland, restaurants, Our Lady of the Lake church and central spot from which to take off from for other attractions and sight seeing drives in the area.

We stayed in a top floor corner room overlooking Lake Superior and were treated to a spectacular sunset while enjoying a great take-out meal from the onsite restaurant. The staff were friendly and professional. The room was clean and the bed was comfy - that is all we need.

Beautiful, historic hotel with a fantastic restaurant that provided room service. The staff is professional and well trained. Lake views were outstanding. Wonderful proximity to downtown. Seeking out the murals was fun.

We visit this Hotel yearly.Love the view and appreciate a full bar and restaurant on site. Location has pool, spa, fitness center with great walking trails immediately off the back deck. Always a view and good food

When asked what price was to stay, was given rate without tax included (as other establishments do) so was a bit surprised when checking out. Restaurant had great food! Hotel could use some modernizing.

I'd stayed at this hotel about 4 years ago and had excellent service with a beautiful room. This time I paid top dollar for a much smaller room actually set up for 1 person since the two bed lamps were controlled by ONE switch; no option for one of us staying up reading while other one slept. The breakfast room held too many unmasked people while eating, and social distancing was almost impossible. Some folks took their food to the outdoor balcony but basically there weren't any options to eating relatively close to someone else. Due to staffing shortage, the restaurant was closed...we were told 'for an emergency'. Thus there was no dinner available and unfortunately, there were few restaurants in the town of Ashland that were open to serve. We ended up making a picnic of food we'd brought from home as did other guests, eating out on the balcony in the fresh air. We saw other folks carrying fast food bags to the hotel. When I spend $200 for one night's stay, I expect far more than what we got.

We spent three nights, the room was decent, quiet for sleeping. The bathroom was not cleaned very well at all, lots of hair behind the door, tub hair and the vanity top was greasy. We told the front desk attendant, she immediately came to the room and spent quite a bit of time cleaning the bathroom top to bottom, the way it should have been done in the first place. Kudos for her customer service and making thing right..!

Loved this hotel. It's right on the water and you can watch the sunset from the beautiful back decks. Staff was very friendly and rooms were neat and clean. Free parking in front of the hotel is also a plus.

This grand old hotel is perched above Lake Superior and the marina. Nice view! Easy walk into the heart of the downtown with lots of amenities nearby. The restaurant and bar at hotel is closed Monday nights, so be sure to make other plans. Chinese restaurant across the hwy within walking distance very good.

My wife and I stayed here as something different than staying in Duluth. We loved every minute of it. She loved the look of the rooms as we walked in, the high ceilings, the view of the lake. The decor in the lobby and every else was a nice little time travel back in time. Hotel can be a little noisy due the the walls and age but you kind of expect that given it's age.

Have stayed at this hotel a couple of times in the past so we booked again for our anniversary trip. The hotel is in a great location, has an on-site lake view restaurant, rooms are well appointed and includes breakfast each morning. Our stay this time overall was a good experience except for a couple of issues. First, we requested a specific room and was granted it via email from Wendy, the manager, back in April. Upon arrival however, we were given a different room; as the one we requested was apparently taken. Not a huge issue but was disappointed that we had written confirmation and in the end, they were unable to fulfill it. As an apology, they did give us a few drink coupons to use at their restaurant/bar. The second issue was using the drink coupons. That night, we had dinner at their restaurant and wanted to use the drink coupons. When the bill came only one drink coupon was applied. The server said she had computer issues when trying to apply them all . We then asked for them back to be used on the next night but said she couldn't give them back once submitted :( That said, we asked her to try again to apply all of them. She came back a second time with a revised bill but they were still not all applied. At that point we just decided not to press it or make a scene. All in all, we had a good stay but they really shouldn't promise specific rooms or provide drink coupons if they don't intend to honor them. We had a nice stay except for those two issues.

Rooms were clean, comfortable beds, service was very friendly. Very affordable, breakfast was great, would highly recommend this motel! Accessible to many locations in town and with walking distance .

The hotel was wonderfully furnished in the style of grand hotels of yesteryear, but is also incorporates modern amenities. Kudos for having hot breakfast items available when other hotels are using Covid-19 as an excuse for not doing that. And the Duluth coffee was excellent, better than your average hotel breakfast coffee. The Chequamegon Grill was one of the best restaurants I've seen in a Best Western property. The pan fried whitefish and smoked salmon salad were both excellent!

We stayed because the building was beautiful, and had quick access to lake superior. We rented a King suite with whirlpool. Everything was Clean, and staff were helpful and polite. I don't believe the rooms have been updated since the late 70's however, and were not well thought for functionality. (IE) when in the Kitchenette you have to walk out side of the area to open the refrigerator door. That makes preparing food in the kitchen a difficult job. Simple fix would be to switch the side the hinges are on. No ac in the main living area, which made it feel like a swamp, terrible views even for a budget room. The room we received was not the one from the photos. Overall disappointed with the room.

Cleanliness: 4/5 The room was cleaned ok, there was a stain on the toilet that came off when I wiped it. Everything else was cleaned very well. The pool was a little dirty, but as pools go, it was clean. Comfortability: 5/5 The room was a bit small, but had all the amenities you would need. Beds were comfortable, large tv, nice bathroom area. Amenities: 5/5: Everything you would want in a hotel room: Refrigerator, large TV, Coffee maker, soaps in the bathroom, chair and desk, and a beautiful view. Nice pool, large common area with chairs and patio, free WiFi and free breakfast. Breakfast: 4/5: One of the better hotel breakfasts I've seen. Clean facilities, plenty of food variety. Many different types of tea and coffees. Accessibility: 5/5: Ashland isn't a huge town, but this hotel is right in the middle of it. You are within a 3 mile radius of most restaurants in the area. Overall, this was a very nice hotel that is worth a visit.

My family and I have been coming to the Chequamegon for about 6 years and always enjoyed it. I know with COVID things are different but I have to say we were disappointed this year. We traveled from Connecticut and arrived at 12:30 to find that while we had to wait till rooms were ready the restaurant was not open till 4pm . My sister has MS and is wheel chair bound. So it's difficult to just change where to eat. No suggest ions were offered. We /about 15 people or more always get there early and start with lunch/ drinks and go straight through and have dinner. Also no room cleaning having to go to desk for towels and toiletries. Restaurant not open at all Sunday and Monday. Called front desk for password to WiFi and gentlemen gave it to me and it didn't work tried it many times so I called the desk again to be told with an attitude to just keep trying. Never did get it . We book our rooms almost a year in advance so receiving an email letting us know about the changes would have been helpful. Thank you Diane Marcolini/ Cindy Magaldi/Fleets

Our room was overly priced, not clean, there was an odor (think dead animal) coming from the vent, and needed updating. We did complain at the front desk, and when we followed up on it, they didn't send anyone to check out the smell or clean, just said they took a small amount off our bill (not enough to matter). While the location is great on the water, and it looks impressive from the outside, the lack of cleanliness, especially when touting "covid precautions", and the response, was simply not acceptable. We will not be going back or recommending.

This property isn't really that old, it's just made to look that way which is fun! It's kind of pricey and the room was small but adequate for us. Roomy bathroom. Nicely decorated. Comfortable bed and quiet. Pool was clean. Sat on 2 of the verandas overlooking the sunset over the lake and visited with other guests while sipping a cold drink. Lovely. Breakfast was good, lots of choices. Tables not cleaned between guests, pretty busy so assume they just weren't keeping up. Property is clean. Close to downtown, very walkable. Free and safe parking lot.

A hotel with a lot of character. We loved our stay. The food was fantastic, the view was fantastic, and the parlor is a fantastic place to have a glass of wine in the evening! Also eating on the balcony by Lake Superior was delightful.

Great Customer service, very friendly and helpful staff members. Room was very clean and comfortable. I had a very comfortable night and would definitely stay again on my next visit. Thank you so much to all the staff that made my stay at this hotel so comfortable and peaceful.

Being right on Lake Superior was amazing. The hotel was extremely clean and organized and the staff was friendly and helpful. We didn't get the chance to try the restaurant, but it looked great with the outdoor seating overlooking the lake.

We have stayed here several times and always like the view of the harbor, Lake Superior and especially the sun rise/sun sets which are spectacular. Hotel is an easy one block walk to the downtown, which is blessed with 20+ large, historic murals. Very impressive.

Stayed Thursday and Friday nights in June prior to peak tourist time. King bed looking at the lake room, bed and pillows were very comfortable. Wish the windows were bigger for a more picturesque view of the lake. Hotel bar and restaurant had good choices , food was done being served at 9pm drinks at 10. Nice hotel centrally located to Main Street.

We can't say enough about Great stay we had. Due to some unusual circumstances we stayed in three different rooms over the course of five nights. We liked all three very much. The restaurant and bar serves excellent food and drinks. We ate there every night, looking forward to dinner all day! Great views of the lake, nearby to other bars and restaurants as well as other conveniences. All of the staff had great attitudes and were very helpful. An extra shout out to James the desk agent and to Wendy the general manager who went out of their way to accommodate us and our ever changing plans ( we had to wait a week for the right weather to bring a boat from Duluth to Ashland). Thank you again to all of the staff, we will be returning soon!

I truly enjoyed my memorial weekend stay at the Best Western Chequamegon. It is a beautiful property with amazing Lake Superior views, a unique comfortable Parlor with beautiful antique furnishings. The meals were awesome, the staff happy and helpful, and management staff willing to go above and beyond.

Overlooking Lake Superior the hotel is in a beautiful setting. Patios make for a comfortable setting. Rooms are spacious. Breakfast is a plus. Good value. Friendly, helpful staff. Location is good for exploring Ashland and surrounding areas of Lake Superior.

The view of Lake Superior was nice, the room was mostly comfortable, coffee was available and the breakfast was adequate. The pool and hot tub are still closed. If you are looking to come back to your hotel after a day of hiking in the cold to be able to soak in the hot tub, this isn't the place for you. We didn't find out it was closed until we showed up in our swimsuits to the pool area to find them empty even though there is a notice in the elevator with hours and a reminder to wear shoes to the pool. There was 1 outlet in our whole room that wasn't filled by a light fixture or appliance. So be prepared for that

The hotel was clean. The room was clean and very comfortable. Only issue was the TV could not pick some channels. All of the appliances worked in the room. The limited breakfast was good. The two front desk clerks we dealt with very helpful and friendly.

This is a charming hotel! The lobby is cozy and feels comfortable-like a home away from home. The parlor is beautiful and a great room to sit and talk or read and look out at the lake and the marina. The staff is friendly and really understands how to make feel people feel welcome. Coffee and ice water are available 24/7 and we loved the free hot breakfast that was served. The fitness center has great equipment and is spacious-much bigger than others I've been to. The restaurant on site is wonderful-with lots of outside seating and lake views. This hotel has places to get access to the lake, walk and explore-great for families too. I would highly recommend staying at the Hotel Chequamegon!

In this hotel right now. It is a gorgeous and clean place. Can't beat the view of Lake Superior. Upon check in Ann Marie was friendly, knowledgeable, and overall awesome. Unfortunately, that's where it ended. It's snowing and the satellite dish is covered with snow so the TV isn't getting a signal. My husband went to the front desk and was told there was nothing the front desk kid could do because he looked and the dish was too high. I went to the front desk myself and asked for a broom. It isn't too high to reach with a broom... The kid basically started to argue with me and was rude as can be. My husband asked if maintenance could be called and the kid snaps back that he did and there was no answer. Apparently this whole hotel has ONE maintenance person. Anyway, He left the front desk area and was gone for a bit. Came back, said he can't give us a broom because he called his GM and she said it's an insurance liability. Of course it is, I know this, but saying there's nothing you can do and dismissing a guest is unacceptable. I got the GMs name and you can be sure she will be getting a call from me on Monday. I told him he was rude and he didn't seem to care. I also told him that upon check in my husband and I fell in love with the hotel and already told family how lovely it is and planned to return in the fall with our kids. There is NO chance of that happening now. I can get that there are limits to what this kid can do but it was his sarcastic, don't really care attitude that pushed me over the edge. If the maintenance person can't be reached maybe they should have a back up plan. Maybe the GM should be coming in here to do it herself. Telling a hotel full of guests that having no TV all night to just deal with it is the worst possible thing you can say to a guest. If I could have found the phone number for the ownership, Maplewood Hospitality, LLC I'd be calling them too. I will never stay at a hotel owned by this company nor will so ever stay at a Best Western branded hotel ever again.

We stayed here in December and loved our visit. We had a lake view king room and everything was great! However we stayed here now and had a city view room. Very different. The room was unbelievably hot!! The thermostat is locked up and unless u put on air it was sweltering. I understand it was extremely cold outside but let people adjust their own room. Also very noisy, sound of motor of some sort running all night. It is a beautiful place but I recommend staying lakeside. Pay the extra, worth it.

The hotel was beautiful as well as the scenery. They made our experience less stressful in these COVID times. The hotel and our room was very clean which made us feel more relaxed. The setting of the hotel was wonderful. Right on Lake Superior. The decor was amazing.

We stayed at this property for a weekend get away. The service was excellent. We were warmly greeted on check-in and the process was quick. Our room had a beautiful view of the lake--was clean and spacious. With the warm weather, we were able to enjoy the outdoor space. The bartender was courteous and attentive. Our food was also excellent. The deck area overlooking the lake was a great place to relax. The hotel continues to serve breakfast, implementing precautions and providing a server to reduce contact. Highly recommend this hotel if you are visiting the Ashland area.

We had the end unit facing the lake. It was just lovely. extra large room with very tall ceilings. It was so stately - it felt like were in a presidential suite. I was also able to work from the desk while staring at the big lake. The bar and restaurant were open and we enjoyed a really nice meal and drinks at the bar. The staff were very friendly and engaging. The trail along the waterfront is right in front of the hotel. My husband and I used the trail every morning and walked to the coffee shop on the west end of town. Just lovely.

The hotel itself is beautiful in a beautiful location. We had no issues with the condition or cleanliness of the hotel and most of the employees were very helpful and courteous. The reason for the poor review is 1.) The pool and hot tub were closed. We were not informed of this until after we had checked in and initialed off on the payment agreement. The reason we were given for them being closed was kind of sketchy...both "needed parts", that weren't coming in until next week. One employee told us that they had been down for a couple of weeks, another employee told us it had just happened. 2.) The bar/restaurant area is beautiful, but the service is very slow. They were not busy, but both nights we went down there we sat at the bar for at least 5 minutes, maybe even going on 10 minutes before we were even acknowledged. This was a huge disappointment, as this was our one and only "getaway" weekend/vacation for the year and we were hoping to have some quality time relaxing in the hot tub and enjoying a couple of drinks at night. The whole situation left us feeling like we spent a lot of money for nothing.

Not worth the price. When we checked in, we were told the pool and hot tub were closed. We were told the workout room was open. When my husband went down in the morning and asked the worker where the workout room was located, he was told it was closed. My husband told the worker that we specifically stayed there because it had the exercise equipment and she said " you will be ok" Breakfast was supposed to be included but the breakfast area was closed. Everyone staying there was given a paper bag breakfast on their way out the door. The cost of the room should have been reduced if nothing was included. I will never stay at this location again.

The hotel is not cookie cutter, it has unique decor and is one of the cleanest we've stayed. The restaurant has great food with friendly servers and an awesome view of the lake. We stayed in room 323 and the only downside was the short showerhead.

Lovely, fresh place with attentive staff. All Covid guidelines being met. Clean and spacious rooms. No breakfast other than the bagged ones, but that's to be expected now. We loved the ability to walk downtown Ashland which is cute town. We'd stay there again.

This is a great location and it has wonderful views. The hot tub was nice and relaxing. The room was super cute and had enough room for a roll away bed too. It was nice to sit out back and look at the marina. The walking path is under construction but will be nice when it is completed.

The Best Western Plus on Lake Superior in Ashland is a unique hotel. What a beautiful place, The room was quaint and clean. the staff very friendly. It is a great place to coordinate all the activities in the area. I wish the breakfast was a bit more thoughtful...It was awful. I know that COVID is to blame, but, I have stayed at other BW+ during this pandemic and they were more creative with their offering.

Stayed here for two nights, very accommodating. Did not have a Reservation, stopped in, had a room, glad I did. Ate in the restaurant, great food, staff was very friendly. Great walking trails around, a great view of the lake.

What a beautiful hotel! We had no idea how grand it looked, or that it was right on the lake, so we were excited when we arrived. The staff was great, the room was great, and the outside areas, especially overlooking the lake, was great. There were several levels of terraces with seating, with staircases to the grounds. The fact we found a few ghost stories for the hotel online was a plus, too! :)

This is a historic hotel; parlor has the antique furniture, but many places in hotel have been updated. Comfortable, quiet rooms with great view of lake (and we were there during holiday weekend); within walking distance to downtown restaurants and sites. They couldn't offer hot breakfast due to COVID-19, but did provide bagged breakfast snacks to guests. Housekeeping not able to make beds because of COVID-19, but did provide fresh towels and empty trash. Conveniently next to walking trails.

Grab n Go breakfast was inadequate, however room and service were great. Room service food was delivered hot and quickly but quality was average. Grat lakeside view from room on a beautiful property!!

We loved this hotel so much that I've already begun referring friends to it by name. The building is a 102 year-old property that is so elegant that it's hard to believe it belongs to a hotel chain. The woodwork and other detailing inside is amazing. My son and I loved sharing a soda on the back porch veranda. And definitely make sure you ask for a room with a water view, as the sunsets are breathtaking.

My husband and I spent the weekend there. It was a big disappointment. It was overpriced for the quality of cleanliness and service. From the moment we walked in, we could see that this once beautiful historical landmark has been neglected. The lobby was dirty, the carpet was a disgrace, the,men's bathroon in the lobby was stopped up, the furniture was dusty, and the elevator was dark and stinky. Our room was a bit cleaner, but we had a used roll of toilet paper and no other; not good during COVID. The next day, after our room was supposedly cleaned, the coffee we used was not replaced nor was the bed made. The only thing done was to give us a fresh bath mat. To top it off, we did not get the discount we were supposed to as my husband is a hospital employee. The young ladies at The front were not very personable and did not seem eager to help The customers. The bar in the lounge we ok, and the bartender was great. However, the outside deck was dirty, the maigolds wete wilted, and our unbrella on the table was broken. Way over priced for what we got. Such a shame.

Made reservations via phone direct. Quoted one rate when arrived rate 49.00 higher, asked why and they changed to quoted rate. They never mentioned when I made reservation the restaurant was closed (this was end of June 2020). Bar was open. would of made difference in regards to booking there.

I stayed with my husband and adolescent boys. We liked the hotel's historic look. We got room 306 (3rd floor) that had a bay view. Nice, clean, quiet, small but good size room (it looks better in person than in the pictures). We could take the steps or elevator which helped to make us feel safe with COVID. The staff had masks and the front desk had plexiglass. The breakfast was O.K. I am sure that the breakfast would be nice if it was not for the regulations. The grab and go breakfast had either donuts or muffins, a Nutragrain bar, water, and an apple or banana. There is an upper and lower deck that you can watch the sunset. During the week the bar onsite was open for just drinks. We were walking distance to downtown. We felt safe during our stay. The location was nice- we went to Madeline island and to the Porcupine Mountains.

The location of the hotel is great, beautiful historical property on the lake with great views. I checked in and went up to the room. One key did not work, the other did but to my surprise the room was not clean! Had to go back downstairs and wait until other people got checked in to get a clean room. At check in I requested a room on top floor (I don't want anyone to walk on my head during the night and keep me up at these prices) but was given a room on 2nd floor (right on top of the bar patio!!). When I told the front desk lady that the room was not clean she immediately gave me a room on the top floor. At that point why not giving me a room on the top floor immediately since it was available.? I also noticed that the toilet paper roll was half used. During Covid this sort of things should not happen. Plus I would love to have a full roll since I spend $170 a night (and paid extra to get a lake view). The bed frame and the light in between the two beds were full of dust, I cleaned them myself. At that point I was upset because I chose to stay in a higher price hotel to receive a better quality cleaning service especially during Covid but the way I found the room made me doubt any serious cleaning had been done in a while. The breakfast was my biggest disappointment. It was grab-and-go but should have been called grab-and-run (because after seeing it we all ran to the next door fast food place). I understand the need for grab and go but in a lower category hotel next door my friends had a large breakfast with boiled eggs (wrapped in plastic to go), bagels, jam, spreadable jam + cheese + peanut butter, yogurts and plenty of choice of fruits and protein bars. Here we had a bag with 1 small apple, a small fruit bar, and some donuts (they were pretty stale too). At least coffee some fresh coffee or some tea bags! Also, the sitting room where the fireplace is located was beautiful but once we sat we got up pretty quickly as they were unclean. The beautiful hand carved chairs had dust and hair on the back seat, and the carpet under the table was so dirty as if it had never been clean before. We could not even tell the color (brown-filthish?). The elevator too was pretty dirty. Also, the hallways smelled like stuffy. I think they should have had the a/c on when we arrived to prevent odor throughout the hotel. I think in general some adjustments should be made like detailed cleaning.

My sister and I paid almost $200 for a suite with a whirlpool. The light fixture above it was hanging because the bulb was too big (scary) Every outlet was overloaded, the coffee machine didn't work, couldn't use the pool, couldn't use the restaurant but the bar was open. In our room, all of the heat registers were broken and wires exposed. The sad part is that they had the time to do these minor fixes. This was such a beautiful historic place. Too bad cheapness ruined it

Room was too small , room with lake view was not actually see the lake because of very narrow of windows. Room was dirty, i seen dust and hairs all over the chairs .Customer services was poor too. The previous reviewed was not true. The price ways more expensive than what you would actually get.

Very disappointed in the service of your hotel. We stayed last night, 5/25/20 and are staying tonight. Went to Bayfield for a day trip and got back to room as about 4pm. Housekeeping never touched the room today. All dirty towels still in bathroom, no cleaning of anything and no making of beds- nothing. I immediately called from desk to complain. No offer to get room cleaned, she just said she'd bring a few more towels if we want some. I said your not going to clean it and all she said was it should have been and she will leave a note for housekeeping tomorrow. This is terrible service! In addition, bathroom so tiny almost impossible to close door once someone inside. And, in general, even before the fiasco of no housekeeping services, room was very unclean when first checked in. Staff seems to generally show a real lack of caring. Very sad

Would have rated the property higher if other staff had been as professional, courteous, and friendly as John, Dining Manager. Dining closed due to Covid 19 so John worked the hotel Front desk. HE acknowledged my presence every time I entered or exited the lobby. The rooms are not as described: Queen suite with Lake view was a room of mismatched furniture, BR so small one enters sideway and have to close the door to get to sink or toilet. Mirrors were not cleaned. Lake is only visible if walk to the tiny corner windows and look left. Check if your room next to a room with jacuzzi if the sound of a roaring machine keeps you awake.

Despite the blizzard and our 3 hour delay arriving, despite the virus issues, the staff was alert for our arrival and prepared to see us situated as quickly as possible after that grueling journey. The hotel is a wonder for the eyes to explore. It has a intriguing history; a fun story to tell. I will look forward to visiting when much better circumstances prevail. ( No Blizzard; no epidemic) We certainly appreciate they stayed open to offer rooms to travelers. We had an urgent situation require we travel to the area and of course were quite concerned about what kind of complications we might experience. No worries. Our thanks to the staff for remaining open during this difficult and challenging time.

This is a great property right on the south shore of Lake Superior. Clean rooms. Really good hot breakfast. Did I mention the complimentary cookies in the lobby. There is a bar restaurant in the lower level with a great view of the lake.

This was a great place to stay. The rooms were clean, the lobby had great historic furniture pieces displayed. There was a "bonus room" behind the check-in desk that was a sitting area with a beautiful fireplace. This also walked out onto a patio where you could watch the sunrise/sunset and boat traffic (weather permitting). Continental breakfast was appreciated. Restaurant/lounge downstairs was great. From food to drinks there were zero complaints.

The hotel is charming with wonderful public space, very well cared for and unique. The restraunt is wonderful with a nice variety. All the staff members were pleasant and helpful. I enjoyed the pool and spa as well! We stayed 5 nights and had the best dinners 3 of those nights at the hotel. Convenient to the downtown area and courthouse.

This is a beautiful hotel right on Lake Superior. It has the look and feel of something from the early 1900's but completely modern. The restaurant in the lower level was amazing. We will definitely be going back in the warmer months

The hotel was not crowded, so it was nice and quiet. The rooms are very historic looking and beautifully decorated for the holidays. Pool area was very clean and staff is very friendly. The restaurant/lounge looked very nice but we were not there during business hours to enjoy it. It would have been nice if they were open for lunch on Monday, Dec.23rd.

My husband & I travel from Northern MN to Ashland the first weekend of December for his birthday. We love the community, shops, and restaurants. The ONLY PEOPLE I have met in Ashland who are rude include the desk clerk & manager from today Dec 8, 2019. My questions were answered with the customer is always WRONG remarks, excuses, no apologies or help, and as I exited— the GM had audacity to make a final last word rude remark I'D NEVER RECOMMEND THIS PLACE & encourage others to find alternate hotels

If management has changed since December 2017, please take into account. I HOPE my experience was just a fluke. The front desk clerk brushed me off when I asked about a USB connector to charge my phone (none in rooms). He also noted that nothing in the hotel would be open their regular hours because it was cold and the staff went home early.The interior was under construction (understandable) which put a damper on my stay, but the staff couldn't be bothered to make it any less of a damper. It's like they just didn't care. The place was a ghost town (midweek after Christmas); a handful of guests weren't worth the effort I guess. I was also charged twice accidentally and had to go through a refund process. Maybe they've figured out how to handle third party transactions since then. The whole experience was a shame since I'd been looking forward to staying at this beautiful place since I was a little kid. I'd love to visit Ashland again but won't be staying a the BW.

My wife and me stayed here over a recent weekend, And it is a nice hotel, I did notice the room numbers outside the room were old postal boxes.. an unique touch. I did notice that near the lobby the metal trim piece from carpet to hardwood floor was loose and popped up if stepped on, Which could cause a problem. We had a double queen suite was very nice, tall ceilings and comfortable. My complaints would be a 32 inch tv is very small for the room.. The bathroom really could use some venting.. breakfast was very good, not spectacular, but decent. Overall it is a nice hotel, including the bar and restaurant down stairs..

The hotel was built to model after the original Hotel Chequamegon back in the 1800's. The rooms are roomy but in need of some updating. The bar and grill on the lower level offer a great view over Chequamegon Bay with a large deck. All in all, it's a nice place to stay but the breakfasts have been a disappintment during our stays in the past

The hotel itself is beautiful at first glance. However, there were a lot of places where I saw maintenance was needed. Ceiling tiles in the hallways were out of place, curtains in our room had holes/rips in them. The carpets needed refreshing. The beds were just so so. They were more firm than what I was used to.

The Hotel Chequamegon is a gem along U.S. Highway 2 in Ashland, Wisconsin on the South Shore of Lake Superior. It's design recalls the stately hotels of the late 1800s, but with modern conveniences. It is convenient to the downtown area of the city with beautiful murals painted on the sides of historic buildings. A pedestrian tunnel connects the business district to the lakeshore walkway, passing underneath the 4-lane highway. The mosaics in the lighted tunnel are not to be missed. I was very pleased with the hot breakfast included in the comfortable dining area. Hotel staff were courteous and for the most part, efficient. Be sure to make use of the lounge area off the lobby that has a fireplace and a panoramic view of Lake Superior.

i Stayed with my two kids while my husband was away working for the weekend. I had been in the building a few times but never spent the night. Check in was a very smooth process. Our room was beautifully done. We stayed in one of the turret rooms and it was very simple and elegant with a great view of Lake Superior. The king bed was VERY comfortable! Even the pull out couch wasn't bad. My only complaint was that the heater either had to be on and run constantly or off and not at all. No auto setting. The pool was cold but doable. The hot tub was perfect! The restaurant was completely and beautifully redone. The new chef was outstanding!! Our food was delicious! breakfast was great. Good selection including almond milk, which was great for my lactose intolerant son and myself being vegan. All in all it was a great experience for all of us and we will most definitely stay again!

Loved the old styled building with antique furniture and the Northern Parlour which has a lot of history. Great cookies and coffee. The room also exuded the old fashioned charm. It was very comfortable with a view of the lake. We enjoyed walking along the lakeshore in the. Or I got then touring downtown to see the murals.

The rooms were clean, but a little bit small for a suite. The restaurant food tasted pretty good, but was hoping for the price of it to get more food then what I did. Not worth the money, but food tasted good. The staff was very nice and helped us with whatever we needed. Breakfast was really good and never ran out of food. The doors to the room weren't very sound proof. Walking in the hallway could almost hear everyone's conversations inside their rooms. Overall it was good. 4 out of 5. Wasn't bad, wasn't the best.

Very nice service and great food. Brittany was an amazing super fun bartender. Sam was super attentive and courteous. There is a great view of lake superior. On my next trip to Ashland I will make it a point to stop back.

We decided to take a short trip to the area and were able to book a room here last minute. We were so happy we did! This hotel is so charming and located right on the lake. The room we had was very clean and comfortable and quiet- my most important goals for a stay. This place exceeded our expectations so much that we stayed an extra night. We did get a lake view room, but if someone took the city view, there is a beautiful lounge (with fireplace) and a deck that both have lake view. They also have a great restaurant downstairs with a deck. Everyone there was so nice, but Shirley was exceptional. I noticed how kind and welcoming she was as she greeted each guest. I later learned how she tried to ensure that each guest enjoyed their stay as much as possible. She was great about telling people the sunset time and where the autumn colors were peaking as well as many other great tips. I hope we can get back to the area again soon and stay at this wonderful place.

We stayed for our 7 year wedding Anniversary, we love The Hotel Chequamegon and Always choose to stay there when we visit Ashland we visit 2-3 times a year. Wouldn't dream of staying anywhere else. Beautiful location and staff is always Top Notch.

If you haven't been here yet, you are missing out! The remodel and change in management have made the Chequamegon Grill one of the best places in town. Blake and Katie made our evening out so special. The service was top notch! Not to mention the view! I would highly recommend!!

What a charming hotel right on Lake Superior. It was rebuilt in the style of a grand hotel from the late 1800's, lots of antiques and full of charm. The staff that were super friendly and the rooms quiet and clean. You could enjoy sitting on the deck watching both sunrise and sunset or just watch the lake and activity in the harbor. Historic downtown was a block away and most of the murals were within walking distance. Breakfast area was kept clean and they used real plates and utensils. Caribou coffee and cookies were always fresh and available in the lobby. Great location and stay

This Best Western on the shores of Lake Superior has wonderful views. The lobby and “Parlor” are all decorated in the 1920's period. Very well done. Rooms are nice with many with a water view. Very friendly staff. Would definitely stay here again!

Stayed here because we couldn't find a place in Bayfield. Glad we did. It's a nice hotel. Old, but nicely refurbished. Stayed in the Butternut Suite. Very nice room with plenty of windows overlooking the lake. Hallway to the room was funny smelling, but wasn't a real problem. Restaurant there seemed nice. Can't rate the food because we didn't eat there. Bar was okay, but would do better with an experienced bartender.

Nice hotel and excellent staff, beautiful room and very clean. Liked the historical building, restaurant was very good! The lake view was enjoyable. . Close to the marina made for a nice walk and view. The pool was closed, the receptionist informed me that the pump went out that day, but we weren't there for a pool experience so not a problem, I accept that mechanical things eventually fail, I'm a repair guy that counts on that for a living. Very nice hotel!

Driving up to this hotel the view is impressive. It is a beautiful, historic building right on the shores of Lake Superior. Our room was clean, comfy, and had a beautiful view of the lake. The lobby is gorgeous, the staff friendly and helpful. The decks overlooking the lake are a great place to watch the sun set.

One of the most beautiful places to stay. Complete luxury and beautiful setting places. Several decks overlooking the lake. The restaurant area for breakfast was comfortable. The halls, lobby, restaurant and bar are very classy. There are sitting areas and parlor. Beautiful hand carved wood work and antique furniture Location is close to downtown shopping, restaurants and great graphics painted on many of the buildings.

Best Western in general are worth the money but, this one needs a make over!! Beautiful location on the lake which when I booked I asked for lake view and did not get when we checked in! Value for your money was quite poor!

We waited a bit to check in as only one staff member around. The toilet seat was broken and propped up so it fell to the floor when we first used the toilet the curtains were ripped and the sofa bed was made but dirty. This would have done it in for me normally, but the same woman who checked us in fixed it all and was very prompt and kind. The rest of our stay was nice. The grounds are lovely. Breakfast was great. We would return but only with my best western discount.

Outside appearance great ,view from our window out over the water fantastic,& food in the restaurant great & staff were helpfull & friendly . But once you got on the elevator it had an odour ,the hallway had an odour & the room had a bit of an odour but not as bad as the hallway & elevator . To us it is just an unpleasant smell nothing specific . The worst was the drapes in the room were filthy, upon moving them to look outside they had dust flying from them & they were stiff they were so dirty .

The price of the room for this area was outrageously expensive. The hotel itself is fine, in a nice location, but there is no excuse for the rates charged. There are plenty of other options in the area.

I am giving it 5 overall because the food/menu was excellent. I have been in the business, have high expectations. The property was beautiful. The restaurant service has issues. My service score is restaurant.

Hotel is charming and very clean. Location is fantastic - the views are amazing. Note: the Chequamegon Grill on site has some of the BEST food and menu options in town. I did not try the complimentary breakfast but did visit the area for some coffee and reading. The food looked fresh and the quality seemed to be a tick above other hotels offering a similar amenity.

This property has it all - location, in-house restaurant with patio dining overlooking Lake Superior, walking paths at lake's edge, swimming pool and hot tub, spacious, comfortable rooms - but on this, our second stay at this hotel, we were disappointed with our rooms and the service in the dining room. We paid extra for a king room with a lake view, and while the room was comfortable and well appointed, there was rust or mildew on the tube surround, so we did not shower. The dining room was very crowded, but the service was still sub-par. The restaurant seemed to be short staffed, and the logistics for the wait staff to take an order, place an order, pick up and deliver food had the limited staff running themselves to death. If it weren't for the shower issue with our room and the poor service in the dining room, I would've rated this property 5.

This hotel is very clean and has all of the accommodations you would need for a trip to Ashland. Spectacular views of Lake Superior. We had a group of 21 people and they accommodated all of our needs. They have a beautiful patio over looking the lake. They also have a restaurant with outdoor seating. We did not eat there but the menus looked good and not overpriced. We also did not use the pool. The rooms of the older hotel are updated and very clean. They had many antiques throughout the hotel. The continental breakfast was great. The night manager was very nice and helpful. Great stay!

Driving up to this hotel was very impressive- beautiful exterior right on Lake Superior. The lobby is also very nice. Nice room, Comfy bed, lake view, very good breakfast. The pool and hot tub are also nice and look out over the lake. It's a very easy walk into the historic part of town to see the murals painted on the buildings. There is a beautiful deck looking over the lake to watch boats or the sunset and you can also walk out on the pier.

Last overnight stay on the Lake Superior Circle tour. Great location,really liked the hotel. Only issue was the room door was tough to open. Needs some adjusting to unlock correctly. Would definitely stay again.

We had a wedding to attend in the area and stayed here. The views of Lake Superior are beautiful!! The staff was very accommodating and our rooms were clean. The beds, linens, and pillows very comfortable. We enjoyed happy hour and breakfast and found the food and service to be very good.

Great room, wonderful breakfast, friendly staff. Location was central to lots of good visits. We stayed here on our honeymoon 24 years ago. Love the furnishings, feels like a high end hotel. Would definitely recommend st as to g here.

I have visited my son at Northland College in last four years many times. I have become a big fan of the area for many reasons including staying at the Hotel Chequamegon. The hotel overlooks the Bay and the view is fantastic. Sitting on the porch at sunrise and sunset is my favorite. This place makes me feel it is my home away from home. Downtown Ashland with great stores and restaurants are right across the street.

My wife and I were in the middle of a 2 week trip from Boston to Dallas. We have had a number of 1 to 3 night stays at a variety of hotels/lodges/motels. This hotel was the best located in its surroundings and provided a marvelous view of Lake Superior and local boat slips. Service was well provided and timely. We arrived after the dinner hour after catching the last ferry off of Madeline Island and was still able to get a beautiful reconstructed period furnitured room. We highly recommend staying at this hotel and appreciate Best Western providing facilities like this,

The hotel was renovating their bar/restaurant during my stay. However, the staff went above and beyond to assure that the guests still were able to enjoy all the amenities of the bar/restaurant. The staff were extremely friendly, accommodating, and there was no loss of excellent service during the renovation. Thank you Best Western!

Stuck in a snowstorm and always wanted to check this hotel out. Outstanding property with lounge and grill - very good food. The hotel has a very good energy about it. Like going back in time - enjoyed sitting by the fire lakeside and relaxing after a knuckle-buster drive. I will definitely stay here again.

Went to visit a child in college there. Hotel is clean, staff friendly, cookies at night, nice hot tub. Great location. decent breakfast. good value. Great views off the lake and a lovely reading room with a fireplace.

We had a very enjoyable stay here and would definitely stay there again. The breakfast was way above average, and they have a nice deck on the lake side to hang out at. The one and only detractor is that it was a little bit unorganized with respect to management

This hotel has a great sports bar and dining room. Lot's of variety for wine, beer or mixed drinks. Restaurant's food is excellent. Room was spacious and very clean. We will stay again when we are in the area.

We stayed 1 night in August at the end of our UP trip. The beds were comfortable and the room a nice size. The pool was a bit small and water kind of cool but we had it ourselves so that made up for it.

The decor is beautiful, staff friendly and professional. The breakfast that was included was quite good. Needed improvements... two people in the same room could not be on WiFi at the same time...be aware of that. Beds were comfortable but sleeping was a challenge. The box heater on the wall was very noisy. We turned it off only to hear water bubbling (or something) in the baseboard hot water heating...sounded like a mouse in a potato chip bag. It did make noice on and off..not constant..but woke you up often. We did call the front desk and were offered a room change but it was too far away from another relative. Lastly, in looking for a lost sock and looking under a bed...vacuuming has not been happening for a long time. Looking out at Lake Superior is a big plus....

My daughter and I stayed there for one night. We found the staff very friendly and helpful. We ate dinner in the restaurant, the food was delicious, my daughter had the homemade mac and cheese and I had the fish fry Lake Superior White fish, very good!!!!! The beds were comfortable and the pillows. The rooms were clean. The towels were of good quality. Decent morning breakfast (free). My daughter did some swimming in the pool and hot tub and had a good experience. I can see this hotel being much more impressive to stay at in the summer months to enjoy the outside decks overlooking Lake Superior. I would stay here again.

This hotel had attractive public areas----looked a bit like a small version of the Grand Hotel. The room was clean and attractive enough. The shower in our room was problematic--temp varied from very cool to lukewarm to warm depending on when you took your shower. The wake-up call was a half hour late.The fridge in our room was freezing our milk but they responded quickly to this problem. They did have almond milk on the breakfast buffet which is nice for people like me that are lactose intolerant. They did give us a $40 refund for the problems that we encountered.

Stayed here for a family wedding with my husband. Everything was pretty clean but the bed sheets were so scratchy and our bathroom was falling apart. The toilet flush mechanism was sticky and you had to flush multiple times to get everything down. The back of the bathroom door was peeling. The fitness room had 1 treadmill, 1 elliptical, 1 bike, and a leg press with 1 set of 10lb weights - not nearly enough for the number of people there. It did have some charm and was right on the water which was very pretty but I wouldn't stay again.

Not your typical Best Western! Very charming hotel located on the shore of Lake Superior. While the lake view is very nice there is an ugly city/county? highway department type building which takes away from the beauty of the lake. We did not have a lake view room and for that reason I wouldn't spend the extra money. The room was comfortable but smaller than some other chains. They do have a restaurant in the lower level but we did not eat there. They also have continental breakfast which was good. Many things to choose from.

The location of the hotel is very nice... on the shore of Chequamegon Bay in Ashland. The exterior and the lobby of the hotel is very inviting but in general, the hotel is in need or updating. We were VERY disappointed that there was no internet service during our entire 3 night stay. The free breakfast was also a disappointment with cold food and burned, hard omelets.

We enjoyed our stay at this hotel! This has beautiful pieces of furniture and woodwork. The view is hard to beat! Our room was clean and smelled fresh. (We had declined another room in town and were thankful to find this gem!) Shower/tub was hot and plentiful water, I really loved their shampoo, conditioner, soap, etc. brand-it also smelled great. The decor is very pretty. Peaceful and serene with walking places on the Lake Superior side. I ?? Caribou Coffee! To see this in the dining area was so great!!! Breakfast had something for everyone. Close to Main Street, within walking distance. Lovely indoor pool and hot tub, also. My advice: this is an older building, not a lot of plug ins, bring an extension cord and be safe about it. I would definitely recommend this hotel! ??

My wife and I rented a suite here. Very nice, good size room overlooking a bay of Lake Superior. We tried eating at the restaurant on site but after waiting incredible long time to be waited on we left. Also the breakfast here is 3rd class serving pre-made formed omelettes, corn beef has that looks like it came out of a can. Great Caribou Coffee though! Wish they serve fresh fruit and have oatmeal already made. Great place to sleep but not to eat.

I have been to The Hotel Chequamegon a few times and each time there has bee great. The rooms are beautiful, view is great and I love that they have a lakeside patio bar and restaurant. I would highly recommend this hotel.

The view and quaintness of the Hotel is worth the stop. Based on the upkeep of the hotel, you would expect a restaurant to be of the quality that would fit a place like what you see. However the main eating establishment is just a run of the mill Pub. The food was good but I expected the atmosphere to be like Chase on the Lake in walker Mn. not so. Would I stay at the hotel? Absolutely ! But I would find another restaurant in the area.

Great location, friendly staff. The front desk clerk remembered me from past stays and had me checked in as soon as I approached the desk. Wonderful view of the lake. Molly's restaurant has great food. I do miss the fresh fruit salad they used to serve at breakfast.

Beautiful hotel gracefully restored. Probably best place to stay in Ashland. We enjoyed just hanging out at the hotel, dinner out on deck which was very good, and watching sunset with a glass of wine. Very relaxing. Don't expect rooms to knock you out-standard looking rooms with high ceilings. Biggest issue was service. Staff could use training. Found service issues in all areas, example, had to finally go to bar to see if we could get dinner service on deck. Checking in was interrupted by staff taking phone calls. Unfortunate.

I have been staying at this hotel for as long as I can remember. I have family in Ashland, so I have been going there since I was a child. This hotel has changed ownership over the years, and I can't honestly say that I enjoy it as much now as I did before It became part of a chain. The pillows are not very comfortable and the blankets are on the thin side. I think it is a bit overpriced for what you get, but I guess with the tourism boom that is taking over the north shore this is part of it. A stand out team member is Stan - Night Audit. Coming from a hotel background myself I know how difficult things can get and he was personable, friendly, knowledgeable and kind. I very much enjoyed my conversation with him. Overall though I will say, that this is the only hotel in Ashland proper that I am currently willing to stay in.

After traveling most of the day we chose this hotel because of the bar and restaurant on premises. The hotel is very nice; wonderful rooms, wonderful views and clean. But the restaurant/bar is woefully understaffed. When we visited there were probably 50 people and only 1 bartender and 1 waitress. The bartender was doing 80% of everything; taking food orders, busing tables, settling bills and in between that trying to serve drinks. He was totally overwhelmed. The hotel manager eventually found his way down to help but was late from the earlier chaos. Management= it is still high season; I would suggest either staffing the restaurant/bar or close it down. The food was ok, the drinks were good.

What a wonderful hotel! Rooms were very, very clean, the reception area was decorated with such lovely, well preserved antiques, the staff were very friendly and responsive, the complimentary breakfast had real eggs and other nice selections, and the Caribou coffee was excellent! The views of Lake Superior were wonderful and such lovely flowers on the property! My wife and I kept repeating......"this isn't a Best Western - it is way too nice!!!" Nothing against Best Westerns but all the ones we stayed at previously were very much "budget" looking hotels.......well done, Hotel Chequamegon!!!!

My friend and I stayed here two nights and enjoyed the old style elegance of the hotel, including the furnishings and the stunning views of Lake Superior. Our room was fine with two comfortable beds and a view of the lake. Housekeeping fell down a little by failing to clean behind the nightstand and failing to provide us with shampoo. We had three bottles of conditioner. Interestingly, I found a small hunting knife under the edge of my bed - something housekeeping should have caught. The breakfast was tasty and a notch above most hotel buffets. Overall, we had an enjoyable stay.

Nice location, but poorly trained staff, poor breakfast, site not maintained. Room not properly serviced. Various excuses made, rather than problems solved. Would potentially be an excellent hotel in perfect location.

BEAUTIFUL hotel with Old World charm and decor. Helpful, friendly staff. Excellent dinner on the deck overlooking the waters of Lake Superior. Indoor pool and hot tub were refreshing after a long day of travelling.

We always stay in this hotel when we are in the area. Wonderful location, beautiful gardens, patio facing the bay. Staff is very helpful and nice, lots of antique and interesting furnishings. Includes pool, whirlpool and fitness facility. What's not to like?

We really had high hopes for this hotel. Our room with a lake view would have required us to stand by one of the two windows to enjoy the view. They have too few tables on their deck so we ended up going elsewhere to enjoy the views and the outstanding weather. We spent little time at the hotel except to sleep because of it. Their complimentary breakfast is the usual, nothing spectacular. The beds were comfortable.

The hotel has the charm of an old hotel with lots of history but rooms need to be updated badly with smaller pieces of furniture or less so its not so crowded, we had 2 queens and it was tight. The room needed a good long cleaning very dusty, pop lid under chair, bathroom needed a new shower head, and cleaning in corner. Price was high and really noisy

Beautiful property with a great deck overlooking the lake and sunset views. Clean quiet room, a nice breakfast and a good bar and restaurant downstairs, friendly helpful staff. We were with a large group and they were very accommodating. If I'm ever back in this area will definitely stay here again

What a 5 star location! On the shores of lake superior with a patio/deck that anyone can sit on and view the sunrise or sunset. Approaching the hotel, the flowers were beautiful. I particularly loved the antiques. If you are interested in finding out more about them, ask the desk clerk and they will give you a pamphlet that tells all about them. The beds were comfortable and clean. There is a restaurant that also has outdoor eating and I will review that by itself as I don't want to spoil the review of the property. This is a terrific place to stay. Don't miss the cookies and fresh lemon water in the lobby.

Stopped here prior to a kayak trip to the Apostel islands. Great location with nice lake view. The food is ok. Breakfast free, basic and also ok. Reception for us was not available at arrival, had many jobs that night. Rooms are clean, free WiFi. I'd say overall what you would expect but not more than average.

We spent one night at this unique hotel on Lake Superior. The view of the lake is spectacular! We had a family room that held 2 beds and a sofa bed. The room had a particular name but I don't recall what it was. The room was large but the bathroom was very small. Sofa bed mattress very thin and uncomfortable. In hindsight, we should have brought our inflatable mattress in rather than use the sofa bed. The AC unit did not cool the room as much as we would have liked but there was a ceiling fan in the room that helped us to sleep well. I don't imagine extra cold AC is needed too often in this part of the country. The hotel property is lovely with several nice decks and lots of chairs to lounge and enjoy the view. The indoor pool was very refreshing after a long day in the car. Restaurant waiters and bartenders were very kind. One bartender even went out of her way to make my son some chocolate milk. The hotel didn't appear to be very busy and it was sometimes hard to find a staff member in the lobby or front desk area. (*Try Pizza Pub for dinner. Pizza was excellent and they have gluten free crust options!)

My husband and I spent two days at this hotel. The rooms were average. The furnishings in the lobby were very nice. However the restaurant was the worse I have ever been in! First it took forever to get a waitress. When we got one she didn't some to want to be bothered taking our order. We were the only ones there! We both ordered Rueben sandwiches. The corn beef was shredded and it was mostly fat. I complained and was told I ordered it, I have to pay for it. Not good at all!

This hotel is not particularly old - it was built in the 1980's BUT it has the feel of a grand old lakeside hotel from the 19th century. Rooms are large and comfortable, staff are gracious and welcoming, the views from the outside terrace are lovely. We were there for two nights on a visit to the Apostle Islands and thoroughly enjoyed our stay.

My husband and I recently stayed here while celebrating our 42nd anniversary and overall this is a nice place. We were put in an octagon room with a jacuzzi and it was very nice. At first we wondered about how old this hotel was as it's made to replicate a historic place. They have some very interesting historical facts with it & our view overlooked the Lake. Would recommend staying here if visiting in the area.

There were lot's of younger kids staying during the time we were there, and they did what little kids do - run down the halls using their outside voices. I have no problem with that, as they're on vacation and excited, but what was great was that the walls and doors were really noise dampening, and we could barely hear them. The lake side rooms have great views of the lake, and the patio as well. We had dinner one night at Molly Cooper's, and it was lovely, with a very relaxed vibe and tables set far apart, pretty good food, and cold drinks. Rooms were comfortable and clean, the pool was warm, and the spa had a turbulent, vigorous jet. Pretty big breakfast with good Caribou Coffee.

I spent 3 very enjoyable days at this property in one of the suites while on vacation. The view of Lake Superior from the 5 windows in my room was stunning. Our room was clean and ready upon our arrival at 3pm. Hotel staff were friendly and helpful. The bartenders Janelle and Jess were especially welcoming and my bf and I enjoyed spending some time at the bar each evening talking with them and other guests. Housekeeping personnel were efficient and even though I only asked for towel and garbage service each day, it was done quickly and as I asked.

Stayed in the Butternut Suite the eve of my daughter's graduation from Northland College. Pretty room on a curve of the building with five windows. The ceilings in the room are high, old hotel style. The view to the west is better than looking east. I like the old feel of the building even though it's updated.

Best Western took a charming, but old hotel and renovated it to a warm and beautiful place to stay. The elegant atmosphere of the early 1900's has been updated with present day features. We look forward to staying at the Hotel Chequamegon our next trip to Ashland Wi.

This was a great hotel to stay in, clean and comfortable. Beds were cozy. I rated the hotel as average just because it needs a bit of an upgrade. the rooms could use some paint, new flooring and an upgrade to modern decor. Overall a nice place to stay and I will return here if in the area.

I want to tell you about one of your employees name Lisa. Lisa is amazing. I fell off a ladder and was in excruciating pain and Lisa did everything she could to help me. It's funny while I was at the front counter I saw her help other people and she did it with joy kindness and also has a great knowledge of the area. I will come back because of her and the way she treated me.

When we checked in the staff was very friendly. They have great coffee and cookies! It is a very clean hotel with a beautiful view and a nice breakfast. They have some beautiful antiques and a small pool. I was disappointed that the hot tub was broken. The room could use some updating with a new mattress and towels. We will return but would give it a 3 1/2 star and hope for updates.

Pool was very, very cool. Hard to have fun and not deep enough for lap swimming. Great breakfast, good service overall. Room was very clean I am very hard of hearing and the closed captioning on the tv did not work. Also more than half of the channels listed did not work

We stayed at this hotel for one night and wished we could have stayed longer. Absolutely beautiful facility, wonderful staff, delicious complimentary breakfast, and a beautiful view of Lake Superior. We stayed here after having to evacuate our own city after a refinery explosion so it was a last minute decision to stay here. The staff at the front desk went above and beyond to make our stay a great experience.

Don't stay anywhere else in Ashland. Best customer service in an extremely unique hotel. Bar and restaurant on site with a good free breakfast in the morning. Best hotel in the area. Reasonable pricing.

Great atmosphere and appearance. Wonderful full breakfast (Not just minimal breakfast choices). Had a problem with multiple irons leaving apparent mineral dust from water left in them but staff found one that did not have buildup.

Comfy, satisfying stays guaranteed. So much warmth and charm at a very reasonable price. Their restaurant/pub offers great steaks, local seafood and the best bloody mary I have ever tasted. Roaring fire in the study fireplace, expansive views of Lake Superior and one of the best complementary breakfast buffets I have ever had. Very consistent top shelf care and support. Recommend 100%. Been staying here for years. Once you stay...you will return too.

Nice motel and they did a great job accommodating a Huge group late at night when we arrived. Id would like to stay here in the summer. Im sure the lake is beautiful. Great service. I would stay here again.

Such a cozy relaxing stay, I got much needed rest and the staff made me feel so welcomed. Plenty to do and if you ask locals they'll steer you in the right direction. Just a short distance from Ironwood with fun shops to check out.

Our stay started out great with the staff allowing us to check in two hours early. We left the hotel that afternoon and returned around 8:30pm. The manager and clerk at the desk did not acknowledge us when we walked in the lobby and while we waited for our elevator even though I intentionally tried to make eye contact several times so I could say hello. We planned to eat dinner at Molly Cooper's, the hotel restaurant, but were not in a hurry because the front desk clerk had said they served food until 10pm. We got to Molly's at 8:50pm and were greeted with an unpleasant look from the bartender who asked before we even sat down "what do you want to drink" and was clearly annoyed that we were there since we were the only ones at the bar. We ordered our drink and asked about ordering food but she said the kitchen closed at 9pm. Two women came to the bar and asked how long the bar was open. The bartender replied "well, I have to stay open until 10", but once again looked annoyed and clearly did not want customers. Needless to say, we slipped out after one drink while the bartender was outside smoking. Our room was way too hot and we couldn't control the heat so had to plug in the air conditioner in the middle of the night while it was 20 degrees outside. We found the previous customers leftover food in the refrigerator and the microwave was filthy. The bed and pillows were very uncomfortable. To top it off, the wi-fi did not work in our room. We definitely would not stay there again. Had the customer service been better, it might have been worth the $165 we paid, but I would rather stay in a lower star hotel for less money where they treat you well and the rooms are better.

We've stayed at four area hotels in Ashland and the Hotel Chequamegon is the best, by far. At check-in I requested to be away from the elevator or ice machine, as I'm a light sleeper. The manager directed the desk clerk to upgrade me to a suite facing the lake. What a nice surprise! We had the Friday Fish at the restaurant on the lower level, which was delicious and priced right. The pool was cold and the room temperature was cold, so swimming wasn't much fun. Summer prices are a bit higher due to tourism, but this is a great place to stay!

I spent 3 nights here in February. I had a king suite with a whirlpool I didn't use. But the room in general was larger than without. The lake side room on the third (top) floor are quite, clean. And, except for the bathroom. spacious. In the restaurant I had a very good entree of grilled fresh Whitefish, with maple syrup coated roasted carrots.

Had a very nice experience at the Chequamegon Hotel. Will be back! Love the décor and the staff was far and above any hotel I have stayed in in the Midwest. It was the Christmas holiday so expected service to be on the slim side...not so. Adapted to our needs for the Holidays and it was much appreciated. Met other very nice travelers and shared some time with them which was very nice.

A piece of history with warm and friendly staff to ward off the outdoor frigid cold. The decor and warmth of this establishment is above and beyond most that I have experienced in the past. I felt as is I stepped back in time and was even greated by a friendly ghost in a cowboy get up.

This hotel is an older hotel that has gone through a lot of renovations making it up-to-date but still with a historic feel. My room was clean, well appointed and modern. It was very quiet, and very comfortable. The lobby of the hotel has dark wood and a historic atmosphere. The front desk is a wooden counter which would not be out of place in an 1800s hotel. The lobby is the same. There is a restaurant on site which I did not partake of, but I have heard it is good. The hotel overlooks the bay/Lake Superior and was lovely even in winter. Overall, I'd happily stay here again.

Stayed in a suite overlooking Lake Superior. The hotel is renovated, yet has many old fashioned touches. Lots of dark wood. Stayed the night before Thanksgiving and got an excellent rate. The bed was comfy with a couch near the windows to see the lake. There's a trail right behind the hotel. Not all picturesque, yet we saw a snowy owl!! If you walk about a mile west you come to a tunnel under Hwy. 2 that's filled with mosaics of local plants and animals. At the other side of the Hwy. you can access a historic downtown with shops, restaurants, a coop and a brewery.

Found this as a surprise, and I couldn't be happier! Kind service, inviting atmosphere that's saturated in local history, and affordable for a lake view and comfortable nights sleep. Glad my mother and I stopped on our long journey.

This is the exception to all other BW hotels - which I do not stay at due to consistent filth, unprofessional, dated, etc. ! This hotel is Beautiful, grand, spotless, friendly, charming, etc. excellent!!

A beautiful representation of an historic in. A true gem of the Best Western chain. I will stay there whenever in the area and would recommend it to my friends. Room was beautiful and food at the restaurant was delicious. The coconut shrimp are not to be missed.

Been staying here for over 12 years and have never been disappointed. the rooms are very accommodating and the suites are outstanding. the lounge is very receptive and the food is outstanding. The view from the hotel across the bay is a great way to start your day.

This was a beautiful hotel with lots of history. The staff were very helpful and the atmosphere was wonderful. Enjoyed drinks and the view on the patio. Staff were very helpful with the menu and recommending wonderful dishes to eat. We had a corner room with lovely views. Will stay again in the future for a few more days and take in the sites.

I paid to not stay at this hotel. That's how bad it was, I wouldn't even accept complimentary points because I know I will never stay at a Best Western again. I travel for work and stay in a lot of hotels. This hotel reminded me why I would be willing to drive an extra hour and a half to stay at a Hampton Inn.

When we had small kids, we used to try to get one-bedroom suites in hotels. We could put the kids to bed early in one room (usually the "living" room) and then stay up in the bedroom to watch TV. If you want this in the Hotel Chequamegon, there are a few things to keep in mind. First, there is a pass-through-type window between the two rooms that cannot be closed or covered. It will let light and sound from one room to the other. Second, there does not appear to be any way to control the heat or cooling in the "living" area. The bedroom has a wall unit AC/heater that works fine, but if the "living" room is too warm or cool there isn't any obvious way to adjust the temp. Third, many one-bedroom suites have TVs in both the bedroom and the living area, but this one only had a TV in the bedroom. All that said, we had a comfortable stay, and enjoyed the ambiance of the old-timey place. It's in a good, central location, it was quiet, and the included breakfast was pretty good.

Front desk at check in was excellent in explaining the services at the hotel. Room was clean, comfortable bed, Breakfast was extensive in selections and coffee was superb. Got a real perspective on the history of the Hotel Chequamegon by walking around the lobby and reading the comments that accompany the numerous photos. I highly recommend this hotel.

We participated in the Whistle Stop Half Marathon. The Hotel and staff were great for both the check in process and for checking out. Enjoyed the Breakfast served. We dined in Molly Coopers and the service and the food was great.

We visited our son at Northland College during the fall Apple festival in Bayfield. The location was perfect, right in the middle of town. We have a comfortable stay at the Best Western. Service was good hotel was Clean.

I always stay at the Chequamegon when in Ashland. The view of the bay is really nice. I go for a run on the walking path that runs parallel to the shoreline. Easy access to the downtown area. They have a good breakfast here as well.

The hotel was nice but the room amenities needed upgrading. Several things (door knob, faucets, etc.) didn't work properly. I would not necessarily stay at this property in the future as there are several other good choices in the area including Bayfield, WI

They take good care of this hotel. Our room was clean and nice, and the beds were very comfy. The big porch and lake views were lovely. The breakfast had variety but not the best food quality. There is some lake clean up taking place in a tent next door, which is not the hotel's fault. The tent affects the view a bit off to one side only, but is not noisy or dirty. It's unfortunate that it is there but it didn't bother us. We do plan to return in the future.

We enjoyed the Old Feel of the property, but a lot of the decor was outdated/old. The decking is beautiful as was the front of the hotel, but the landscaping has been neglected. Front Desk staff was always present, which was nice.

Excellent location, comfortable bed,room clean room and roomy excellent location, breakfast fit all our needs did not need to use electronics were only spending one night and leaving the next day was a fun stay.

A good looking property, terrible food in the restaurant, and we were kept waiting to check in until the last possible moment, which was annoying sitting in the lobby waiting when there must have been other rooms ready. Room was on the traffic side and the other side has a splendid view of the lake, so specify carefully which you prefer.

We booked a stay here under the impression it was a historic hotel, only to find out it is not. The staff wasn't overly friendly and I don't think it was as nice a hotel as they made it out to be. Inside the room one couldn't tell if they where in a cheap motel or here. Very pricey for no more then it was.

If you are traveling near Ashland this is a hotel experience not to miss. Highly recommend this hotel. Their dinner restaurant is excellent. However I would not recommend the breakfast even though it is free with your room purchase

Location is good, attractive exterior and common areas. The rooms lack current amenities considering the cost. We were expecting an up to date room considering the cost of lodging. Need to be updated!

Older hotel with musty smell in hallways. Beds are comfy. The bathroom looked dingy & there was no toilet paper. Staff is friendly. Hot tub does not work right (jets are too high & water just splashed over the side) Cookies & coffee on arrival ! Balconies to hang out on so no lake view room needed. breakfast was sausage gravy/biscuits & boiled eggs, cereals & pancakes/fruit. Nothing special but a good place to stay.

This property looks better from the outside than it does from the inside. Much of the antique furniture in the lounge was uncomfortable and chipped. My room was adequate, the bed comfortable enough, but as in many hotels, the hall noise (from a group of volleyball players in a tournament in town) was irritating. This is not the fault of the hotel, but not fun, either. I used the jacuzzi, but note that the jets, instead of going into the water, shot up out of the water. I turned off the jets. The bar on the same floor as the pool, smelled like chlorine. Not a pleasant place to have a drink. This hotel, as are most in the area, are dependent upon vacationing visitors, and my guess is that the shoulder seasons it is fairly empty. I feel the price is a bit too high, but expect anytime between Memorial and Labor Day is going to be expensive.

It's a classic in Ashland. The rooms are average, the lobby is beautiful as well as the beautiful view overlooking the marina and Lake Superior. The restaurant is good but limited over the labor day weekend.

Restaurant staff not very friendly, knowledgable or helpful. Nice view of lake but was not very impressed. Other places might be nicer in this area....this was a late afternoon choice. Was recommended by BW in Duluth as we were travelling east.

I took one look at the hotel's web site picture and knew we had to stay here! The hotel is a real beauty, drenched in history, with a lovely lobby and has antique touches throughout. The front desk staff was so courteous and professional, filling us in on historic elements of the property. My husband and I were upgraded to a suite quite unexpectedly, after booking a regular room with a lake view. They were totally booked the night we were there. The suite was just gorgeous and truly our favorite stay of our whole three week vacation. We felt like royalty and only wished we could have stayed longer! It was glorious, clean and the bed was so comfortable. Would love to return!

The room was clean, but the air conditioner was loud, we lost TV reception several times and the mattress could have been more comfortable. The hotel staff was friendly, but did not want to compensate us for any inconveniences.

We stayed at Hotel Chequamegon in Ashland for 4 nights. We had to change rooms 3 of the 4 nights due to my own laziness of booking late. The staff made sure we were comfortable changing rooms and even allowed us to put our things in the new room early so we could enjoy the day. The only 2 drawbacks were the rooms were pricey and the chord on one of the room's blow dryers was about 1 1/2 feet long.

This is a great hotel situated right on the bay of Lake Superior. Walking trails just outside of hotel that take you into town. Nice bar/restaurant on site. Interesting historical decor and pictures. Friendly and helpful staff!

Really enjoyed our stay at the Hotel Chequamegon. The lounge, swimming pool/hot tub, complimentary breakfast and wonderful view made it feel like an all inclusive resort. Would loved to have stayed longer but it was only a stop over to Bayfield and Duluth.

Fluffy pillows, quiet hotel (thank you!), and delicious breakfast in the morning with a variety to select (yogurt bar!, pancakes, fruit, eggs, muffins), and Caribou Coffee! Wow, the first hotel that I have been to that had coffee in which you went back for a second cup, thank you!

I enjoyed staying at this unique property. Historic but yet very much updated. Will definitely spend time there again. The location of the hotel is along Lake Superior with walking paths and gardens surrounding the site. Dinner was served on the outside patio over looking the lake. It was a beautiful day!

We had a suite with a lake view. My wife and I take time to walk on the walking path next to the lake and go all the way to the park and fill our water bottles with the artesian spring water. The cookies in the lobby could be better, nice to offer but can tell they were frozen and crumble quickly. The deck on the back of the hotel has a nice view of the lake. They do have a small indoor pool that is nice on a bad weather day. The location is convenient. We always stay here when in Ashland.

The hotel has a lot of antique items and really sets the mood for the whole hotel. The room was clean. Our room was a water view, and it was breath taking !! The outside decks are nice to sit on and have drink or just enjoy the view. The pool was small, but served it's purpose, the hot tub however was not very relaxing, the air that it pushes is too strong so can't enjoy it and the water sprays up into your face. The staff was friendly and knowledgeable about the area. Would definitely stay here again !!!!

Nice historic hotel. Good view of Lake Superior and the sunset. Nice staff at restaurant but comely incapable. We arrived 45 min prior to sunset. We finally got the table cleaned off from previous guest after 25 min, menus after 35 min, drink order taken 40 min, food order taken inside because the sun had set. Not to mention the lemon that was never delivered with fish. Very poorly run. Too bad really.

A short 20-25 minute drive to Bayfield, with an amazing view of the Bay. The restaurant serves great food and the breakfast is better than most free offerings. Our room exceeded our expectations as we stayed for 2 nights with an 18 & 21 year old as well as 2 adults. Very friendly and helpful staff.

Best Western by the Lake was an exceptional place to stay. The hotel is classy, the front desk staff courteous and helpful, the location was excellent, and the room was comfortable. There was relatively little noise. The restaurant was great and we would stay again when we return to Ashland

The hotel cleaning folks just go through the motions. We were told the room was cleaned and inspected prior to our check in, however we found cold dried pasta on the floor next to the refrigerator, a large bag of of trail mix on the window cell, multiple hair on the pillows, and a dirty bathroom all left over from the guest before us. We notified the Frontdesk after day one and they did offer an apology. The second day they did change the sheets and removed the bag of snacks but that was it. The pasta and bathroom remained unchanged. If you like a hotel that the staff are willing to work to keep clean, I would NOT suggest this hotel. $200 per night???? We visited the Bayfield area in July. We stayed at Hotel Chequamegon (pronounced: shwa-meh-gun), an older hotel, for 4 nights in a clean and comfortable room overlooking Lake Superior. The hotel serves ice cold water and delicious cookies in the lobby for its guests.A typical room had 2 queen beds and a standard bathroom.This hotel has a continental breakfast where the main entree changes each day. There are 2 decks overlooking the lake where we enjoyed a few drinks and a meal after spending the day in Bayfield. The staff was very friendly and helpful during our stay and made wonderful suggestions of other restaurants in Ashland to visit. You've got to stop in to El Dorado, a terrific Mexican restaurant! The burritos are h-u-g-e! I'm not kidding. Big enough to share. Get there early because it's a favorite of the locals. You won't be disappointed.

Our visit began with a long wait to check in. During this time we waited while the "Customer Service Manager " yelled at a staff member in the kitchen over the phone with his back to us. Once that was over, he greeted us with "I need your ID and credit card." No hello or how can I help you. The conversation was short and not sweet. In the morning the pancake machine was broken and all they had was what seemed like very old biscuits and gravy with a choice of 4 doughnuts or very small muffins. While getting coffee, a kitchen staff member reached directly in front of me to change the coffee without even saying a word. She must have learned her customer service skills from the manager. Our room had dirty window sills and a dirty used wash cloth left in the bathroom from the previous guests. For the cost of their rooms I expect a higher level of service. Their restaurant may have been good but we refused to give any more money to this place. We were truly disappointed with our stay. Save your money and find another hotel.

It seems like this hotel could be SO nice, but it is not. The toilet in our room was not clean when we arrived. The bathroom smelled like urine and air freshener mixed together. The ice maker was COVERED in black mildew. Way overpriced for what you get.

This hotel has so much to offer, I wish I could have stayed longer! I will definitely return to Ashland and this hotel when I have more time! I highly recommend it! The hotel staff is friendly and professional.

Really disappointed we were not notified of the hazardous waste clean up going on next to us. Photos online we're deceptive as to cleanliness. Appeared to be understaffed. Paying extra for the suite was a waste of money

This is such a beautiful hotel, from the outside to the wonderful antique furniture and fixtures. We had surprise of an upgrade we arrive. We had a beautiful overlook of the lake. The rooms were very nice. The breakfast was like most Best Westerns, We used the restaurant and the food was great. Being a plus member we are always offered a treat bag or points, we usually take the points, this time the treat bag offered 2 free drinks at the bar and train mix. We enjoyed the two free drinks. The hotel is located right on Lake Superior and within walking distance of the Historic area and other locations to eat. This was a little more expensive being the weekend in the summer, but a nice ending to a weeks vacation.

It's a little deceiving that when you look around this place you think, wow what a grand old hotel. Then you find out that it was build in the 1980's. For me personally that was not a big deal, but if you are a history lover that might be a put off. We enjoyed our dinner from the back deck that overlooks the bay. The rooms were comfortable. I didn't see much in this area for kids to do but for couples this is a good option.

My wife and I spent 2 nights here during our trip around Lake Superior. Great hotel. We got off to a bit of a negative start. The check in was smooth. Very friendly and professional front desk staff. Excellent information about local restaurants and history. The hotel itself is very old but totally renovated on the inside. The historic look was kept while updating all of the rooms and common areas. Our first experience with our corner suite was a little disappointing. Beautiful lake view, 6 windows!! The housekeeping was not up to the standard and price we were paying. Upon opening our door the first thing we saw was a bed Pillow on the floor, Empty Kleenex box on floor beside toilet. This made my wife question if the flooring had even been cleaned. Our shower head leaked all over and the tv didn't work until I got batteries at the front desk. I'm pleased to say I was able to speak with the manager who was very apologetic and helpful. He did make an adjustment on our room charge. Everything turned out wonderful. The onsite dinning was very good and service was great. I didn't get the name of our server but she was very helpful. She also worked on the front desk. Beautiful decks overlooking the marina on Lake Superior, amazing sunsets. We highly recommend this hotel. We think it's a must stay if traveling in the area. Dave & Tammy

Pros: on a marina on Lake Superior. Looks like a Grand Hotel, but actually built in 1986. Friendly, fast check in. We did not eat dinner in the hotel restaurant, but guests seem to like it. Cons: floor in our room not level--desk drawer kept sliding open, doors want to move. No closet. Wardrobe makes room seem narrow. Worn out security hangers fall off wardrobe, room windows screwed shut, breakfast cereal dispenser broken. Hotel next to a toxic remediation site. Seemed overpriced to me.

Very nice property right on the lake. I t was kind of expensive but worth it. The rooms were very clean and the staff was friendly. Very good location with good views of the lake. The restaurant has available outside seating with good views.

While the hotel isn't really that old, it was designed nicely to appear historic. Location - in the heart of Ashland, right off the lake and a walking trail along the lake. Nice views from their patio off of the lobby and bar/lounge. We had a room with windows to the lake - these are standard sized windows (2) that open - with a beautiful, relaxing view. We had a double queen room - ample sized with free internet and a small fridge. The bed was as hard as sleeping on the floor and the fitted sheets didn't fit - by morning, we were on the actual mattress (eww.) The room was quiet - only one time heard noise from someone walking down the hall. The lobby area is beautiful and the bar/lounge is really nice with good food. Breakfast is free: pancake maker, waffle maker, instant oatmeal packets, 3 cereals, hard boiled eggs, yogurt packs, oranges, toast, juice/coffee/tea/milk. One morning they had muffins, sausage patties, and egg patties to make a breakfast sandwich. A few more fruit selections would make this even better. Rates are pricey but this is probably the nicest hotel in the heart of Ashland. Within walking distance of downtown - restaurants, bars, shops; only 1/2-hour to Bayfield and the docks.

Decent hotel but what made it great is the sunset from the lake view room. Everything else is good enough but definitely worth the money to be on the lake. Piano in the lobby which is cool but guests can't play it because it's severely out of tune I was told. Would be worth the money for them to get it in working order because it's pretty cool to have a piano available.

Except for the occasional super fund clean up smell it is a great place with great staff. Food is excellent and service is great The city has a great walking trail just below the hotel grounds. Also a large number of murals on buildings in the historic district.

This is a nice hotel but could be excellent. Everything is average except the rate which is way too high. The decor is beautiful and the rooms are quiet which I appreciate. They used to have a wonderful breakfast with fresh fruit but no longer. Since their breakfast area is getting remodeled maybe that's coming back! I hope!

Truth be told, I've been traveling to Ashland, WI since I was a very small child and I've always looked at the Hotel Chequamegon with envy and as a bucket list place to stay. They've always been sold out for the dates I've looked at and I can see why. I finally had my wish come true due to a last minute cancellation that I was able to grab. The lobby has a warm, homey feel with lots of antiques that go well with the surroundings. The rooms are fine, and actually quite nice compared with other properties in Ashland. (You won't find nicer, but it's kind of a low bar in this area!) The outstanding parts of this property are the staff and the deck off the back of the hotel. The staff was so welcoming and friendly and really seemed to care that we enjoyed our visit. The deck is expansive with a breathtaking view of the marina and the sunsets over Chequamegon Bay. I'd definitely stay here again given the opportunity.

We stayed in the Best Western in Ashland for a night. The hotel is beautifully located at Lake Superior and still central in town. Our room was spacious and very clean. Breakfast was good - it should be mentioned that the hotel avoided the usual plastic plates and cutlery and offered real tableware which is standard in Europe, but we rarely encountered that in the US. In summer season, all hotels in the region were quite expensive, so this is not a negative for the Best Western in Ashland.

If you are looking for a decent place to stay in the Ashland, Wisconsin area, The Best Western Chequmegon would be a pretty good choice. We found our room to be a nice size & very comfortable. Our only complaint is that the breakfast was a typical Best Western fare. No fruit, fake eggs, hard sausages & bitter coffee. If the breakfast had been better, I would have rated this place excellent. One other comment: On our 3 week trip through Michigan, Minnesota and Wisconsin, we stayed at many Best Westerns of similar quality, yet this hotel was roughly 50% more expensive. I think the price was a bit too much for this hotel.

Lovely vintage hotel. Well maintained but kept atmosphere. Book even # lake view rooms. Has great patio to watch the lake. Friendly staff everywhere we interacted. Complimentary breakfast and the bar apps all very good. Will be back.

We were just loafing around Northern Wisconsin. Great Hotel to reside at while loafing in the area, Ashland Community Band Concert to sailing around the Apostle Islands. Some event are in walking distance like the Ashland Mural walk and the trail along the bay. Others like Madeline Island require driving and a Ferry.

This is a great hotel with a wonderful view of Lake Superior. Walking distance to downtown. Very friendly staff and clean rooms. Nice outdoor bar overlooking the lake. Good breakfast. We had a great stay!

Our room was large and comfortable. We had a wonderful lake view and watched the sun set from our room each night over the beautiful bay and marina. Contrary to what another reviewer remarked, I thought the breakfast was good. There were plenty of selections and, if I remember correctly, a waffle maker to make your own waffles with strawberry sauce. Would definitely stay here again.

We very much liked the hotel, its history and the great location. The room we were given was large and had a nice lake view. We were however massively disappointed by the breakfast which was substandard even compared to other Best Western hotels. There was very little selection available at the buffet and most of it was prepackaged stuff. It is hard to understand why on one side you maintain such a great restaurant on site and on the other offer breakfast of this low quality.

Stayed here for two nights when celebrating my parents 50th. We reserved four rooms for 6 adults and a total of 4 teenage kids with bay view rooms. The staff was great as far as allowing us to shuffle bills around when paying for others. Wonderful views and relatively easy access to Bayfield. We ate and drank in the bar the first night and thoroughly enjoyed happy hour. For diner we ate some white fish sandwiches that were on special... and we definitely recommend this place.

Room air conditioner noisy;found used cup in bathroom. Otherwise nice place to stay. Restaurant very good. Breakfast the usual as all hotels-blah. Service good. Coffee and breakfast on the deck with a great view.

One feels very cared for here. It's in an old, historic building overlooking Kale Superior. They have a beautiful outdoor restaurant /deck. One can also eat inside as the weather can be unpredictable in this part of Northern Wisconsin. It can be expensive, but it's a rare treat to stay in a place like this.

Likes: Staff was very courteous, friendly and accommodating. Room had a great view facing the lake. Décor in the hotel was nice if you like older décor. Maybe a little outdated for my taste. Swimming pool and hot tub was fun for my 13 year old. It was a little small in size, but was never crowded when we were there swimming. Nice area for continental breakfast with plenty of seating with many choices of breakfast foods. The restaurant in the hotel was excellent - food we ordered was fantastic (fish fry). The waitress the first night of our stay was wonderful. Dislikes: Beds were very uncomfortable (firm, hard mattresses). Woke up with back aches every morning. Continental breakfast food can be improved with better, more freshly made foods, better assortment of fresh fruit and better pastry choices. Bartenders and wait staff at the bar were not overly accommodating on our second and third nights there, service was somewhat slow. Thought they would have been more talkative and friendly (and smiling).

Very nice, very pretty, has everything one would need. Great views of lake. The main part of historic Ashland is within easy walking distance, as is a walking running path, which is easily accessed just below the hotel. The location and the view gives one such an immediate presence of Lake Superior. I will definitely return.

Weather was terrible as the wind blew and rained poured all week. Long days of work meant trekking outside for dinner would further depress the mood. Fortunately, Molly's restaurant and bar made the business trip dinners easy, convenient, and delicious. Plus Surly Furious on tap. Will stay again if in town on business or pleasure.

The Hotel Chequamegon is a lovely old hotel, sitting in the center of Ashland, WI right on the bay feeding into Lake Superior. We arrived too late to enjoy many amenities, our room was very nice but we did have a couple of technical issues, one not fixable at the time, and when I discussed them with the very friendly desk clerk the next morning she graciously thanked me, credited our account for a significant amount, and assured me the issues would be taken care of for future users. I would definitely stay here again, just arrive earlier! Breakfast was just so-so, but a new addition to regular BW food was a pancake maker! Nice.

I came back to the Hotel Chequamegon for some personal retreat time and wasn't disappointed. Several upgrades gave it the appeal I remembered. Service was superb and the food at Molly Cooper's was top notch.

I travel frequently to Ashland and I prefer to stay here. The staff is always courteous and accommodating, the rooms are clean and quiet and I enjoy eating breakfast in the sunroom. For an extra treat, request one of the jacuzzi suites!

An attractive, updated hotel. The front desk staff was friendly and helpful. The views were amazing. We ate at the restaurant at night when we arrived. The food was delicious and good size portions. I plan to visit and stay, again.

Got a room wth view of Lake Superior. Nice place, room is decent with good amenities. Hotel has nice lobby and visiting areas, also nice decks over looking the lake. Going to try the down stairs bar bit later, right now at South Shore Brewery.

The view was spectacular and the outside looks amazing. However, the room smelled of stale pizza. I had to clean almost everything before I unpacked. Hairs on bedding and in shower, The bedskirt was nasty and stained.

Beautiful hotel and unique experience! The hotel was SO gorgeous. It felt like we stepped into the "olden days". This hotel holds a lot of history and they have done a wonderful job of preserving that. I will most definitely be returning here.

Classic real old world charm on the lake. Typical continental breakfast. Nice bar\\lounge on the lower level. I had a room away from the lake so there wasn't much of a view from that side. I don't remember getting a better nights sleep in a hotel. Very quite room, comfortable beds, great shower.

I really liked the hotel, a little bit surprised for two NIGHTS cost me almost $300! Excellent food in the basement restaurant. (STRANGE PLACE FOR A RESTAURANT) I was disappointed when arriving into the room, the thermostat was set at the highest level! - Had to TURN ON THE A/C to make the room bearable. The young lady who checked us in upon arrival was a GEM!! Friendly, funny and very informative. The Gentleman on SATURDAY NIGHT could not answer questions about the INTERNET. - VERY DISAPPOINTED THAT THE INTERNET WAS NOT SECURE.......very slow as well.

The service and the location of this hotel are top notch. I was within walking distance of the bay, restaurants and shopping. The staff went out of their way when there was an issue with my thermostat in my room. I would definitely stay there again.

Our visit was during an oddly warm February (warm is relative). The hotel is an impressive edifice, made with keeping the history of the area alive. The lobby is very pleasant, with a grand northern-Wisconsin feel. Entering further, one finds the delightful parlor, well done with an historic theme. The hotel room was fine: nothing amazing nor terrible. Although the hallways are rather standard, they did have touches of historic decor to keep it somewhat interesting. The downstairs has eateries, which we did not try, but do look inviting. The walkways off of the the pub go out toward the lack and look as though they would be very enjoyable during the non-frozen months. Nice views of the lake from the parlor, the deck off of the parlor and the boardwalks. I found the price to be rather high, even with some discounts. Maybe this is one of the few non-lodge type hotels around? The breakfast (including) was better than continental, but a the presentation of the eggs and meats were a little peculiar, being most likely mass produced ahead of time. The staff did a wonderful job of keeping food stocked and areas clean. The front desk staff was pleasant and helpful.

We have been traveling upnorth for R&R for many years. This time was a quick trip for some R&R and Reading. Hotel Chequamegon provided all that including their great chowder in their pub. We will return.

I love this hotel. It's our favorite and a close walk to the 2nd Street Bistro, our favorite Ashland eatery! The rooms are always clean and comfortable, the ambiance is fantastic, the view is the best, and I really like the breakfasts!

Very neat hotel with a replicated historic feel, that just wasn't quite there though.. Still an OK hotel and service was great, just expected more from a property that has such class from the exterior. Bed was comfy and nice views of the lake!

If you want a friendly hotel where you are treated like family then the Hotel Chequamegon in Ashland, Wisconsin is for you. It is always clean & quiet with a breathtaking view of Lake Superior as you sit on their deck & enjoy eating & drinking. The Hotel Chequamegon is loaded with history from the 1800's from when the ore ships made Ashland a roaring town with about 80,000 people. Although Ashland has a population of a little over 8000 today it is still a great town where everyone is friendly.

Quaint hotel, very well maintained, nicely located near downtown so you can take a decent walk down main street and then up the board walk along the Bay. You have the option of rooms overlooking Chequamegon Bay. Great staff and a nice breakfast on all accounts. Always hot coffee and cookies waiting for you 24 hours a day. Decent parking for a boat and trailer and outlets to plug a boat battery in. The restaurant is worth one night, for sure. Also within walking distance (2 blocks) is 2nd Street Bistro, which is definitely worth an evening meal too.

Stayed one night in October. Overall, it's a great hotel. Excellent location, well-appointed rooms and lobby, excellent restaurant on site, friendly staff, good breakfast. We've stayed there before, but this was the first time since it became part of the Best Western chain. We had no WiFi access. Staff told us that Apple products don't work on the WiFi. Really? It's not like it's a "minor" brand. Have never had a problem like this before, either a hotel's WiFi works, or it doesn't. "Doesn't work with Apple?" What's with that? A nice young man from the front desk even came to our room and called tech support but still couldn't resolve the issue. Hey, Best Western... it's nearly 2017; Apple has been around a while. How about getting on board?

This was a very pleasant place to say. The view is beautiful! The restaurant located in the basement was good food and very reasonably priced. The evening staff was very friendly. Very welcoming enviroment

This was our fourth trip to Hotel Chequamegon. Over the years, it had come into disrepair, but the new owner/operator has done an excellent job of returning this property to its past glory. Welcoming staff were indeed that, welcoming, and took the time to see if our room (226, recommend highly) was ready as we were early. It was ready and check-in was flawless. Everything clean and ready to go. First order of business was to have one of their loaded bloody marys. Still awesome. Had the fish fry Friday night and it was very good. The wait staff took good care of us. Small glitch with the Wi-Fi but was handled. The grounds and outside of this grand hotel have obviously been worked on. My marital unit enjoyed the morning breakfast. Checkout was flawless. If you have never been to Hotel Chequemegon, we recommend it.

We stayed here two nights while touring the area and found it to be most pleasant and comfortable. We really enjoyed the old school design and style of the building, which was built in 1986 to look as if it was built in 1896. The hotel features a retro design and feel with many antique furniture pieces or replicas thereof, and successfully recreated the old time atmosphere when travelers first began coming to Ashland. Fine place to stay. In early October, when we were there, guests were mostly middle aged or older, and/or retirees, almost no kids, and that suited us fine. Stan at the desk, was helpful, cheerful and dependable despite his long hours.

My friends and I stayed at this hotel while in Ashland to run the Whistlestop half marathon. It was absolutely beautiful and the view of the lake was out of this world. We slept 5 people in a room so had a rollaway brought in which worked well although it made the room a little tight. We were fine with that because we weren't in the room much anyway. We went to the bar one evening for drinks and appetizers and had a great time. The continental breakfast served was very good and the selection of food was terrific. Everyone we met who worked at the hotel was extremely nice and friendly. If I had one negative, it would be that the cleaning crew didn't make our beds which I thought was extremely strange. It could be because of having the rollaway in between the two beds but still..... Other than that, it was a beautiful hotel and a great experience! Would definitely stay here again.

Stayed with my family for 3 nights during a recent running event. The hotel staff were all very helpful and courteous. Overall an excellent place to stay especially if proximity to the downtown is a priority. Pros: Courteous and helpful hotel staff Clean and well maintained Central location within walking distance of downtown. Negatives: Restaurant atmosphere/service/ food is mediocre Single elevator also used by cleaning staff made access to the floors difficult.

This hotel is very clean, staff are super helpful, kind and friendly. The restaurant offers very good food and many selections and friendly and good servers and staff. We enjoyed our stay and would return, when we are in the area again.

The front desk is your 1st feel for a hotel. As I was approaching they remotely opened the door and the 2 at the front desk both welcomed me. We stayed for 2 days and had a couple requests and they could not have been more helpful. They have a lovely balcony where you will get the best views of the sunset. The bar is nice size and the restaurant had very good food at a reasonable price. Drew the manager and Sarah P. were the nicest employees I have encountered at a hotel. In the lobby they have water, coffee and cookies throughout the day. The room was small but had a fridge and microwave which was a nice touch. We had a lake view room which I would recommend. The windows could use a cleaning but the view was still nice.

This hotel is a historic hotel which they have upgraded for the modern comforts and necessary electrical outlets. It is the most centrally located hotel for the central business district and the Mural Walk. It is almost midpoint on the waterfront path, so you can walk out the door and have a nice walk either way. All downtown restaurants are within a 10 minute walk. There is a reasonably good Chinese restaurant 5 minutes away. If the weather is good, there is a wonderful patio to sit on for drinks or reading. I was a bit frustrated with the manager on check-in (would not allow me to view rooms to see if I wanted to change to a lake view since it was not yet cleaned, and we had to wait for a room). There is always coffee and fresh cookies available in the lobby. I was disappointed with the breakfast, as there was no fresh fruit available at all. It did have eggs, bacon and the general assortments of cereal, oatmeal and yogurt, but no fruit.

We booked the Best Western the first Sunday and Monday in October. The hotel is in a wonderful location with a beautiful view of Lake Superior. We arrived at the hotel at 3:15pm and were told that our room was not ready because they were busy the previous night and were understaffed. He told us to come back in 25 minutes. Someone else came to the desk and actually checked on the room and told us it was ready. Went up to a room that was nicely serviced, had a bit too much carpet fragrance put on it, but was in nice shape. We went to look out the window at the view of Lake Superior. The windows are covered in bugs and really takes away from the beautiful view. We like using the stair whenever we can and avoid the elevators. It appears that they do not monitor the condition of these. Looks like stairs have not been vacuumed in weeks. Had a good first night in hotel. Left early the next morning to explore the northern Wisconsin shoreline. We put the card on the door to have the room serviced. After a full day of sightseeing, we were looking to come back to the room to unwind. We walked into the room and found the room in the same condition that we left it. No service was performed on the room what so ever. Went down to the front desk and talked to the same person who didn't know what to do. Fortunately, another hotel employee was just getting done with their day and overheard my concern. She stepped up and told the person at the desk that she would go up and service the room. 20 minutes later, she showed up to the room. We excused ourselves so the service can be performed. Overall, the potential of this hotel is ENORMOUS. Do have some issues with housekeeping, hotel can use some exterior cleaning.and staff could use some training on overcoming obstacles and working to exceed customer expectations.Little things like drink tickets for not having room ready by check in. Dinner for not having room serviced. The little things you do would make the customer forget about the issues. I would give this property another chance once they work out some of the issues.

After a long day of touring in the area, we returned to find that no maid service had been provided in our room. Apparently we were supposed to pit out a hangtag asking for the level of service we wanted. I have never stayed in a hotel where a basic level was automatic. At the least i expect the wastebaskets emptied, paper supplies replenished, towels replaced if needed, and the beds remade. I under stand about towels not being automaticalky replaced to save washing, but none of the above are environmentally unfriendly. A auality hotel that this one claims to be should provide at least the badics In addition, our group meal was overcooked, and service was slow and rather sullen. They did not seem to be glad to see our group. This is a bautiful building in a great location. It is too bad their service is so lacking. I would not stay here again.

Very comfortable rooms with nice hottub good bed. Spectacular view to Lake Superior from room and the restaurant which the food was scrumptious. Hotel had all the amenities you need and the staff was very professional.

Celebrating a fun couples weekend as newly engaged the staff on 10-1-16 was amazing when we arrived. The lady who checked us in gave us a free bottle of champaign for our room which we enjoyed over looking the lake. The service at the restaurant and bar downstairs was fantastic. Our waitress was kind and understanding. I had to send a fish dinner back because of taste preference and she took it off our bill and grab me another dinner right away. The decor was wonderful and my fiancé was loving all the historical references. The only point of negativity was one particular young man working the front desk that night. Talk about unprofessional! He didn't have any idea about local celebration that was happening 3 blocks down from the hotel or any local points of interest. He seemed much more interested in surfing the Internet than helping the guest. That evening we called down for an extra blankets and apparently interrupted this young man because he seemed incredibly put out to have bring a guest a blanket and said he'd bring it up as soon as he could. Being understanding that he very well be swamped I waited...... 3 hours! Having given him ample opportunity I called again happily to get a hold of a new staff member who brought up a blanket quickly. A 5 star stay with a one starless staff member. He seriously needs more training or to look for a less public service related job. Would happily return because of the rest of staff rocked!

Wanted to get away just to relax and see some sites. There were a few things we found that were pretty interesting. But the service and staff at this particular place was not the expirence that we were looking foward to.

This is a very nice hotel right on Lake Superior. We stayed in room 204 Lake side. The view from the room was beautiful. The hall is very quiet even though the ice machine and sofa machine is almost across from the room. I was surprised we didn't hear it. The room was clean and housekeeping service was nice. Very friendly and professional staff. We stayed two nights. Photo 3 is the view from the room.

This is a gorgeous hotel. If you enjoy the outdoors, you have so many opportunities to sit outside and take in Lake Superior. It is is walking distance of beautiful murals. Molly Coopers is a delicious place to eat after a long day of sightseeing. They strive to make your stay pleasurable. Cookies in the lobby are a definite plus.

I travelled to the Ashland, Wisconsin area with a group of friends for a Fall Color trip. We stayed at the Hotel Chequamegon on beautiful Lake Superior. The hotel is a historic recreation of the hotel that stood on the shore of the lake. The rooms are very nice and the beds comfortable. The hotel, while modern in it conveniences, is filled with antiques from the 1800's era. The breakfast included was very good and an evening dinner we had was very good as well. A great stay.

The hotel has spectacular views of Lake Superior from your room and the deck. Staff was very professional and friendly. A full breakfast which is maintained very fresh and clean. We will return - love it!

We were so excited to stay in this hotel due to reading the positive reviews, however we were greatly disappointed. The staff was so rude. We arrived at 2:30 and were told that our room was not ready yet and reminded that our rooms would be ready at 3:00. We went to have a cocktail at the bar in the basement to watch the packer game. We were informed that they do not get the packer game when the Vikings are playing. At 3:00 PM we went back to get out room key and were told that our room was not ready yet-no apologize.. We were told other rooms were ready but we were told that we would need to make additional payment. We finally got into our room at 4:30-again no apologizes at all-we were just told that they were also under the impression rooms should be ready by 3:00. After we went for dinner we went to the bar to have a cocktail at 8:45 and were reminded that they do close at 9:00-the bar tender had friends bring her pizza and was busy talking and eating pizza She was taking bites of her skittles and pizza in the middle of making our drinks! We were part of a large group of people. Many of these people have stayed at the location many times-and none of us will ever go back.

Lots of history at this hotel up to date but kept the old motif style. Right on the waterfront of Lake Superior. Has dinner and breakfast. The food for dinner was salmon on a oak plank. Excellent dinner. Breakfast was waffles and pancakes with a choice of cereals and sweet rolls. View of the lake is spectacular!! Worth it

This hotel maintains the consistent Best Western quality.The room windows are historically small but if you can get the harbor view for a few extra dollars I would recommend it. The onsite restaurant is good and reasonably priced. Your room key includes a discount and a free drink at their restaurant. The free breakfast is a notch above average with waffles, omelettes and pancakes to go with usual fruit and cereal.

Cozy beds, very quite halls, great breakfast area and restaurant was ok, but staff were not very bubbly and seemed to be out of a couple of items. Would stay again, but would like a lake view. Staff was very friendly. Nice patio and sitting area.

I would highly recommend you stay at The Hotel Chequamegon when traveling to Ashland, WI. The location is relaxing, walking distance to Main Street, has a view to die for, and decor that will make you feel like you're in a blast from the past.

We came through Ashland on a trip and stayed here due to the ratings. I have to say the building is beautiful. A classic old hotel right on the bay. The room was very nice but there was no coffee or cups for the coffee maker that was in a cabinet with no electric outlet. The phone was on a shelf across the room from the bed and desk. We paid extra for a room with the harbor view, but the windows were so covered with spiderwebs and dead bugs that we decided the view wasn't worth it. Oh, and cheep single ply toilet paper????? We went down to the restaurant/bar for dinner. The special was a fresh fish sandwich with fries for $6.99. I got that, my wife asked for slaw instead of fries. Hers was $12.95. Seems unreasonable to me but the waitress said that was the price with slaw. On the plus side, it's a lovely place and sitting on the deck with a beer was outstanding.

This hotel built in 1980s replicates an old resort hotel in the area, with vintage touches in the lobby. The view of Lake Superior from the first floor deck is great. Nice for sunset photos. The rooms have high ceilings and long windows, which unfortunately, I couldn't get open to enjoy fresh air. The air conditioner in my room was a window unit set high into a wall and operated by a remote,. The vents were caked with dust, and I did a lot of hacking and coughing throughout my stay,.During the night, there was a slight, burning odor wafting from somewhere. I figured the heat may have come on for the first time and lint in vents caused the odor. The wi-fi did't work. The front desk didn't seem to care. The room was nice enough, with the usual amenities. The breakfast had gravy and hard biscuits in addition to the usual waffles and cereals and breads. The hotel has a restaurant downstairs, but only the bar with bar food was open. If it weren't for the location and atmosphere, I would rate it lower.

Stayed at the Hotel Chequamegon while traveling through the north woods. It is a beautiful hotel right on the shore of Lake Superior. We had lake view rooms. While our rooms were clean and attractive, the hotel itself lacked good housekeeping. There was litter in the halls and the lobby bathroom had not been well attended to. There is a lovely patio off of the lobby area. However there was still breakfast dishes on the table at 6:00 pm. It had rained the night before and a soggy cigar was left on one of the wet chair cushions. Improved housekeeping would make a huge difference with this hotel.

Exterior appearance of this best western very deceiving. Beautiful exterior with worn and dirty rooms. Its clear there has been no replacement of worn and dated bedding and linens. Pillows were horrid. Be sure to bring your own since there are no good options to stay elsewhere. Shame on management for providing such poor quality rooms at a high nightly rate. Feeling very captured and will be sure to stay outside of Ashland on my next trip!

This Best Western is tastefully decorated and the staff is very helpful. Complimentary continental breakfast is available along with coffee and snacks in the lobby. Rooms are clean. Great location right on Lake Superior and Ashland Lakeshore Trail.

We paid over $220.00 per night for a single room with king sized bed. The room was clean but the bedding was worn and the bed/room smelled. The king sized bed had 4 tiny pillows, not even close to standard size. The windows opened but there were no screens in them. We never got our WiFi to work, the desk clerk spent 5 minutes trying and then told me my new smart phone is broken, even though it works now and worked in Italy a few months ago. I only rated four stars due to the convenience of an on sight restaurant and bar and the pleasant view from the deck. The room itself rates three stars considering the price.

Really sad that this beautiful hotel with fantastic views had been neglected. We had to wait 15 minutes for someone to appear at reception so we could check in. He was pleasant enough but we were tired and just wanted to get to our room. We paid for a "queen" bed, but it was more like a 4'6" bed. Towels were small and a bit tired looking. Room had a microwave, but no plates or cutlery to eat what you heat! The restaurant food was lovely, but the service painfully slow, as they seem to have to serve and man the bar. Our server was however very pleasant and attentive. There is only 1 small lift, which often had to be shared with a porter and luggage.The button for the ground floor in the lift was broken overnight so you could only go to the lower ground floor. So when we came to check out we were left unable to get to the ground floor. Fortunately a member of reception staff came passed and ran up to the next flight to call the lift so it stopped at the ground floor. We were only here 1 night and I'm afraid it failed to impress.

We stayed in this hotel earlier this year. It was one of our waypoints on our return trip from Montreal to Vernon, BC. During our previous stay, we had a room overlooking the lake. This time we had a corner room on the 3rd floor overlooking the front as well as side. The room is well appointed and a propos to its old world charm. We once again enjoyed our one night stay and wished that we could have stayed longer. Despite the fact that the hotel was fully booked, we found our room to be very quiet. Service was excellent. The room was very clean and everything worked just fine. The beds were comfortable. The hotel is right beside a walking path that stretches along the shores of Lake Superior. Wifi worked very well. I highly recommended this hotel.

We were visiting a factory in Ashland and they put us into this hotel. This hotel is like many railroad hotels around the country. It has a great location right on the water with plenty of parking in front. The check in was friendly and the rooms were good sized and clean. Each room had a coffee maker and supplies to start the day. Breakfast is included but I have to say the two breakfast we had were nothing to boast about. There is a cafe in the hotel called Molly's which we were told was the best in town. Don't waste your time the food and service was poor. We had problems with the wifi and it took them from four in the afternoon to nine at night for them to get it working. The service for the internet is not in the hotel as they use an outside provider. I have to say that the people were friendly and the hotel had a nice feel to it. If I end up in Ashland again I would stay with them again.

Overall a nice hotel. Price of rooms is based on location of the property not the service, amenities or furnishings. Rooms that face the lake probably have a great view but they cost more also. There's not much else to choose from in Ashland either. This was probably the crown jewel property of the area at one time.

We had a lovely stay at the hotel! Sitting on the top deck at sunset or watching the bay during the day was a highlight. Walking distance to many shops. Free shuttle to Big Top Chatauqua. The place is steeped in history even though it is not an old hotel. The décor is old world with lots of old photos and explanations of the history of the original hotel and the area. The breakfast was great. Wonderful waffles and the automatic pancake machine was a nice touch too. Water and cookies in the lobby all day. Only two issues kept it from being 5 star... the hot tub was out of order for most of our stay, and the shower walls were not cleaned very well.

We had stayed at this hotel around 10 years ago and were happy with it. It is a beautiful facility, well maintained and full of history. The long balcony overlooks a marina on Lake Superior as well as a long walking/biking trail. We ate our dinners in the bar since the dining room was not open. The service was good and the food average. The breakfast area on the entry floor was not bad. It had a selection of foods, though the eggs and sausage were not very warm. The rest of it was okay. I would have wished for a few more outlets but it did have a fridge and microwave. The shower was great. The WIFI connection was good. The air conditioner was noisy even on the lowest fan setting. I tried to open the windows but could not manage. It was hard to sleep with the AC rattling away. My biggest complaint was the service. We appeared after a long drive at 2:50 with the full understanding that check in was at 3:00. The woman at the desk said it would be 10 to 20 minutes so we settled into the lobby. She disappeared supposedly to see if our room was ready. She did not reappear. After 3:30, I began asking the man at the desk what was happening. His response was "I do not know where housekeeping is". I found this strange but sat down again. He did not seem very concerned. I asked again at 3:50 and when it was 4:07, I had lost my patience with his indifference and lack to action. If I had been in his place, I would have been a bit more accommodating and gracious. When I asked at 4:07, he asked me, "Do you want me to check on your room?" Of course I did since I had no intention of hanging out if the lobby for hours. The original woman had never reappeared. He took off and returned saying that our room was ready. When we got to our room, it was obvious that housekeeping was having a great time in the room they were working on. It also was obvious that the room had been ready for several minutes. The room was clean, though, which was good. Housekeeping provided a Personal Care request form of when we wanted service the next day and what we needed. I filled it out and put it on the door before I went to bed. The next day the form was still on our doorknob and the request was totally ignored that was wanted the cleaning in the morning. They did not show up until 4:00 or 4:30 to empty our garbage and refresh our coffee. I do not understand a hotel of this calibre having such indifferent and disorganized service. It was discouraging enough to make me seriously rethink ever staying at this hotel again. I would have given a rating of 5 if it had not been for the desk personnel attitudes and the poor the lack of organized service.

We used this hotel for our wedding reception and we spent two nights here, the location is beautiful on lake Superior. The staff at the hotel give excellent customer care they were so helpful to us for our special day. We booked one of the hotels four rooms which offer a jacuzzi bath which was fantastic to relax in. The room gave excellent views over the the lake so a little tip ask for room 226. The area gives you five miles of walk ways and hiking and nice beaches to relax on. All in all this hotel is the best one in the area book here and your be pleased you made the right choice.Our wedding day at this hotel was the best and all our family, guests and us had a fantastic experience.

A very nice hotel with peaceful decks overlooking Lake Superior. The hours at Molly Cooper's Bar and grille were shorter than expected, and the staff corrected the hours the next day; The room was very relaxing and had a soft bed; We liked the decks that over look the Bay.

The main reasons that I booked this particular hotel were that it looked clean, and that it had a hot tub, as I was celebrating a special occasion with my partner and wanted special amenities to relax. The hot tub was out of order, and the pool area was not very clean/ smelled unappealing, so we did not use it at all. I settled on a hot bath in our room-- but found when I went to take one that I had to clean someone else's pubic hairs from all around the tub. It was extremely gross. I kindly let the woman working the front desk know about my disappointment in both the state of our bathroom and that the hot tub wasn't working, and she brushed me off rudely. She said curtly that she'd let the cleaning person know, defensively said that I could've used the hot tub the night before when it was working (I was told I couldn't use it the night before), she didn't apologize at all for the state of our room, and looked away to continue her tasks. I'm a kind and patient person, but this really rubbed me the wrong way. This isn't as big of a deal, but it depleted the value of our stay as well-- we were told that hot breakfast would go until 10am, so when we came into the dining room at 9:30am, we expected that there would still be food. There were no eggs left, no english muffins, and no sausage-- the only things left were pastries, yogurt, and waffles from a machine. I asked if it would be possible for them to make more hot food and I was told no. If hot breakfast ends at 9:30, your hotel shouldn't advertise that it ends at 10am. The hotel is on the lake with nice views, the bar downstairs was pleasant, and the bed was comfortable. The cleanliness of the room and the hospitality/ customer service, however, are lacking.

This may be the best option in the area, but a bit pricey. Excellent location on the water. Get a room facing the water. The bar/lounge in the hotel offers good food and drink and there are other options with walking distance of the hotel. About 30 minutes drive from Bayfield.

We checked in early and staff was very helpful. We had no problem with parking as the hotel has adjacent parking lot of a decent size.The room was large but we choose one of the suites.The bathroom was small for the room size and could have been bigger. The bed was comfortable and sheets clean. We all slept well. The hotel has great views of the lake and we did enjoy it.

This was our second stay at the Chaquamegon. The first was our honeymoon 21 yrs ago. The last time for a surprise birthday for my wife. Both times the stay was worthy of praise. The view of Lake Superior is awesome especially in the early morning and at sundown. I would rate this place at or near the top as far as being a unique place to spend a night or weekend with someone special.

Always very clean, with friendly, helpful staff, central location, wonderful lakeside view. Love the decks and the northern parlor. Balanced mix of modern and old. Has an historic feel to it. Rooms have a microwave and refrigerator, and the suites have an extra sink. Internet worked perfectly, tv uses a clean remote, but wish the hotel offered HBO or something similar. Breakfast offered a lot of choices, and was ok.

Participated in a wedding at this hotel. Everyone was very helpful and it was a beautiful setting. The crowd looked on from the decks as the couple was wed in the gazebo. Would highly recommend! The gardens were in excellent shape, the location is outstanding. There was a band concert going on in the shell next door and couldn't even hear it from a corner room right next to it! Quite good sound buffering!! Best hotel in Ashland.

Came up for a weekend getaway stayed here for 2 nights. We had a king suite with a full kitchenette living room the bed and bathroom and whirlpool was separate from the living room and kitchen divided by a door. The whole suite had really high ceilings, very clean, really firm but super comfy bed, & the whirlpool in the room was huge. Our room was not facing the bay it was looking towards the parking lot so we had to keep our curtains closed at all time because there is a side walk right there unless we wanted people looking through our windows. But even with being right by the parking lot and road it was super quite barley any noise. Would definitely stay here again!

Beautiful looking hotel with great views if you're on the water side. Very nice amenities, though the prices for everything were a little high. Room value was ok...spent more than I think it was worth but did have a very enjoyable experience. There are restaurants on site but one was not open during our stay and the other kept us away by the prices. Location was central for our purposes - we were enjoying the roads of Wisconsin on our motorycles. Bike parking was good - we were able to park under the porte-cochere to keep our bikes covered for the night.

Did you find our camera bag in room 126? We rushed out of the hotel because we got bad news. Forgot the bag, phoned the hotel when we missed the bag. Was already gone .... housekeeping should have noticed this bag.... They didnt find it though......

My wife and I stayed here before and were not impressed. This visit to Ashland was for a class reunion and the destination was The Chequamegon. We thought it would be convenient to stay here despite our previous experience. We stayed here three nights. Of course there was still only one business chair to sit on so one of us had to sit / lay on the bed. One of my friends had a chair in his room so maybe you have to upgrade to a more expensive room to get two chairs. On the third day or room had minimal service. The towels etc. were replenished but the cosmetics, plastic glasses and coffee were not replenished. Also the beds were not made and it didn't appear that the room was cleaned. Despite the poor service the maid remembered to take the gratuity left on the bed. In the morning it would have been nice to sit on one of the two decks but all of the chairs had water on them. The one positive thing to mention was the well prepared food for our reunion banquet / buffet.

Staff was for the most part friendly and welcoming. Rooms were clean and beds were comfortable. Food in the restaurant was excellent as was the view of the lake. Location is close to shopping and to the murals that decorate Main Street. It was quiet for sleeping-- no blaring TVs or footsteps from above.

Hotel is very average at best. Not worth the overpriced cost. You are paying for the views from the hotel and not the hotel itself. Arrived around 9:30pm and there was no parking available. Was told because the restaurant and bar were still open there was no parking. Parked across street at Walgreens until space was available. Hotel was not worth the price paid.

Lovely accommodations with quite good onsite restaurant. The sun deck and access to lakefront bike/walking trail make this exceptional. Top floor corner room was large, modern but traditionally decorated, clean and quiet. Nice couples get away.

Nicely decorated, clean, and comfy motel in a small town. Beautiful views of Lake Superior from several decks. The staff was helpful and friendly both at the desk and in the restaurant. We would definitely stay again.

The hotel was in a great location and had a beautiful view. Overall staff was pleasant, but the front desk attendant that was on duty every night we were there was not very friendly after we has issues our first night with the cleanliness of the room.

Good hotel and the view is awesome. Watch the sunset from the patio. Great employees at the front desk. 24 hour coffee and wTer and cookies in the lobby. Rooms are clean a bit dated but very comfortable.

First trip to Ashland on a collage visit to Northland. It was important for us to get a feel for the town, and the Best Western gave us this access. Room was clean and spacious, and the reception areas were charming. Certainly the view of Lake Superior from the restaurant was a plus. The hotel was built in the 1980s and the hallways seemed a bit claustrophobic. Positive experience, but I would like to try some other hotels in town if my son decides to attend Northland.

We stayed at the Hotel Chequamegon (Best Western) in Ashland for one night as we were visiting the Apostle Islands. We found the staff and the accommodations extremely friendly and helpful, the room clean and comfortable, and our meals tasty and enjoyable. We would definitely stay at the hotel again if we make it to the area.

My wife and I just stayed there this past weekend. The view out our lake view room was fantastic. I could watch the sunset right from our bed. Only had a few cocktails at Molly Coopers downstairs but the deck outside was awesome and service fast and friendly.. Lobby is an easy walk from the small parking lot right out front. Though built in 1986, has the look of the grand old hotels of the past, lots of beautiful woodwork throughout. Great fireplace sitting area just off the lobby.. Will definitely stay here again on my next trip to the area.

It was a refreshing stopover. The Victorian ambience lends itself to reminiscing about another era. Lake Superior dominated the scene and nearby walking paths were pleasant and full of wildlife.The serving staff at Molly's pub were accommodating to guest' request. Hot tub and pool very relaxing -rooms clean-had hoped for a lake view, but enjoyed the deck view.

Hmm, everything about this place is rustic. It has a lot of history and don't forget to read all the history and note blurbs they have across the facility. This is probably the most definite way to look over the lake as the sun is setting. The beach is probably a mile walk from the place. There is a walgreens right opposite for all the missed out things. Contintental breakfast was not bad, but not something that you would want to, if you are in this part of WI. Two miles aways are some good local shops that you can get better food. Staff were friendly and good house keeping.

We spend a very enjoyable two nights at this hotel in early July. Our lakeside king room was very spacious with an outstanding view of the lake, marina, sunset. Staff was pleasant and helpful, lobby grand and beautiful, and they provide real plates and silverware at breakfast. Wonderful nature walking path along the lake for 2+ miles, great trees and flowers. Great experience.

Dusty, toilet ran, broken switch in the bathroom, lightbulb out. Location isn't great. The location on the bay is next to some industrial work with a sign to keep out of the water due to toxic contaminants. The staff was friendly, but the rooms are a bit cramped and not cleaned or maintained up to the standards you would expect from a chain hotel. There are better options down the road.

We thoroughly enjoyed staying at The Hotel Chequamegon--great view of the lake, lovely guest room, and friendly hotel staff. We also enjoyed the walking tour of the murals scattered throughout the city.

Excellent all around and located in a perfect spot to see the sights. Nice pub and restaurant on bottom deck with the option to dine outside overlooking the lake Superior. Located right on an exercise/bike path that skirts the lake and takes you down to two wonderful beaches!!

This is a very unique hotel. We enjoyed the antique furniture and pictures around the lobby and sitting rooms. The staff was very friendly and helpful. The room was nice and temp. was easily adjusted as needed. Breakfast was convenient and was open until 10:00 am. We were here while there was a band performing in the amphitheater next door. When we returned from our outing in the evening, there were no parking places for hotel guests left. The music folks took them all! We parked in the Walgreens across the street and moved our car back over around 10:00 pm. This was the only negative during our stay.

We stayed here a week with family. The Hotel is located in the heart of Ashland, Wisconsin. The hotel is a majestic white building that sets on a harbor of Lake Superior. The hotel lobby is decorated in Victorian style with several interesting antiques. In front of the hotel is one of several murals on one of the buildings. A balcony and a deck provide wonderful views of the sunsets over Lake Superior. There is even a gazebo that is in back of the hotel with many steps that lead closer to the water. The rooms were small, clean, well-decorated, and our room had a wonderful view of the harbor. This is not a new hotel and the furnishings lend itself to the Victorian era. There is a restaurant on the premises with a good selection of menu items that are reasonably priced. There is a public beach on Lake Superior just a 15 minute drive away on the road in front of the hotel. The front desk hotel staff were very friendly, accommodating, and helpful. They provided a wealth of information regarding the town of Ashland. That provided information regarding the sites around Lake Superior. There are plenty of activities in the area such as hiking, biking, and other historical sites to see. The hotel front desk staff will be happy to help you learn as much about the small town and the beautiful surrounding Apostle Islands. In order to take full advantage of the beautiful views of Lake Superior, a room with a view is recommended. The only drawback to the stay at the hotel was the marginal free breakfast that was available each morning until 10:00 AM. The selection of items were limited and the staff were lackadaisical and unattentive. This was disappointing as the hotel front staff were very kind and helpful. However, there are several little cafes near the hotel and in the area that serve a reasonable and delicious breakfast. If staying here more than a couple of days, I would recommend eating somewhere else.

very accommodating staff and wonderful facility. Especially enjoyed the sunset on the deck. Everything was great - room was nice, clean and as had everything we needed. Restaurant was very nice with great food. Staff was very helpful. As bikers, they were very accommodating and allowed us to park under the over hang by the door. GREAT experience.

The hotel is a historic one. Rooms are small and the beds are lumpy. The location is beautiful and if you enjoy history it is an interesting place. The breakfasts were okay nothing special but works for a free breakfast. Rooms were quiet and the pool was nice. Beautiful deck off the back to spend time looking at the lake. There is a great walking or biking path right by it that was easy to get to. Lots of things around it gas stations, restaurants, shopping.

Good hotel! Staff was welcoming and helpful. Several options for breakfast both in items to eat and locations to have breakfast. We ate out on the veranda overlooking the bay - very nice. Needed a roll out bed and was accommodated with one. Would definitely recommend this hotel to others visiting the Lake Superior / Apostle island area.

We had a queen room with jacuzzi tub which was inviting after a long car ride. Our room was huge, bed comfortable and clean. Very nice views. We will certainly stay here again. The restaurant downstairs had a decent menu and good prices. Free breakfast in the morning, typical breakfast food available.

Best place to stay when visiting Northern Wisconsin. Not far from Bayfield and the annual music festival. Good location for planning outdoor activities in the Lake Superior vicinity. Fine restaurant on the property. Many rooms overlook the lake. Free parking. Helpful staff. Room sizes vary from single bed rooms to large suites.

Stayed here for 2 nights on a work related trip. The hotel is situated on the shore of Lake Superior, with beautiful views of the lake and the nearby marina. The rooms are comfortable and clean, and the staff, for the most part, very friendly. The complimentary breakfast is standard but the coffee was really bad! It's more like coffee colored water. I pointed this out to the serving staff there but they were very non-responsive, or just answered in a very abrupt manner. This is not a deal breaker to stay here.....just make sure to buy your coffee at one of the coffee houses or cafes close by! The wifi in the rooms is great for working travelers.

The Hotel Chequamegon is a hotel that has a lot of character, which you can see from the pictures. To me, it was worth upgrading to the water view room, as the sunsets were spectacular right out the window overlooking the harbor. The rooms were clean (with the exception of the windows needing a good cleaning from the outside). Breakfast was very good, with the exception of the "make your own pancake" machine - the pancakes were tough and bland. They also have a waffle maker and hot dishes - the first day was omelets and sausages, and the next day was biscuits and sausage gravy. The air conditioner was clean and worked well - keeping a steady fan without the clunking that often wakes me up in a hotel room. Housekeeping was excellent. The restaurant on the lower level was good, but a little overpriced for the quality of food. But those views... there's a patio overlooking the water, check it out at sunset. The property is right on a walking/biking path in the center of Ashland. I am very happy with our stay and would definitely stay again.

Had a comfortable stay in the whirlpool bayside suite. Tons of room and super clean. Had drinks from the bar out on the deck both nights we stayed and a dinner. Food was good especially the coconut shrimp starter. We seen a couple of honeymoon couples enjoying watching the sunset. We were with a group, but would love to go there for a romantic getaway. Breakfast was adequate, but I am a picky eater. The rest of the group of 10 enjoyed. Thank you Best Western for the nice memories.

We stayed only one night at this hotel. The night we arrived, we had dinner at the restaurant. The food was average but the service was terrible. When I complained to the front desk staff, their response was "oh yeah I know, they are understaffed again". The next morning, while in the room, my 12 y/o son found a couple of bugs crawling on his leg and arm. He could not get out of there soon enough. Needless to say, we will not be coming back.

Stayed here on overnight while going to the Big Top. Have shuttle right from the door. Nice to be able to relax and not have to worry about driving and parking for the show. Also would recommend the South Shore Brewery for a wonderful meal

We stay here every time we visit family in Ashland. The beauty of the lake, the comfort of the rooms, and the absolute best breakfast make this a great choice. All the touches to welcome you, too; coffee, cookies, a bar and delicious restaurant with a deck overlooking Lake Superior are wonderful.

This was a charming hotel that blended the elegance of a bygone era with the comforts of today. It was fun to look around the hotel and read about its beginnings Our room was comfortable and we had a glorious view.

Place is period dark but rooms r clean and staff friendly. Breakfast is standard hotel breakfast so lots of choices and certainly adequate. View from decks out back . If weather good, u can sit out from bar and dine. Pool cold and spa just warm.

End of a week-long trip starting in Michigan. Reserved room before we left on our trip as we had been here before and loved the convenience and cleanliness of this hotel. Within walking distance to Catholic Church, main downtown, walking/biking paths. Great views of the lake from room and loved all the historic pictures throughout the hotel.

The hotel was well kept inside and out. The rooms were clean and nicely decorated and the beds were comfortable. The gym was nice too. I had a great time in the hot tub and splashed around in the pool for a bit which was relaxing. The view from my room was amazing and the view from the pool and hot tub area was very nice too. Have a deck by the restaurant where you can have your lunch or dinner and relax.

Qualify your people on how to clean a room. My room had an article of clothing on the floor and an un-made bed on the second day of my stay. This was not mine and when I confronted the front desk (GM) he made it seem like a very trivial issue. He came to my room and picked up what I thought was underwear, and found it was a pair of kids clothes and said it was probably in the sheets. Did I sleep in a bed that was not changed after the previous guest? Is this the way Best Western conducts business? Should I be treated like my concerns are trivial?

This hotel was worth every penny located on the shore of Lake Superior. The bed was extremely comfortable with lots of pillows for comfort. The room is tastefully decorated and has that feel of elegance.

Lovely hotel, very friendly staff. Prompt check in and out. Beds comfortable, rooms clean. Good pressure showers with tall shower head (important for us tall folks!). Location great. Centrally located in Ashland, walking distance to in town attractions/restaurants. My only suggestion for improvement is the breakfast. They have range of milk, juices but limited hot meal options. Eggs are every other day from what I gathered and are dry (folded over mini omelettes). Otherwise a mediocre biscuit and gravy option is offered with hard boiled eggs as only egg option those days. Basic toast options. They did have a pancake maker which was interesting but resulting pancakes were mediocre in taste/texture. However, overall for a free breakfast, not bad.

Friendly and helpful staff, great views of the lake (if you have a lakeside room), adequate fitness room with a treadmill, elliptical, and bicycle machine. Weight stack was in need of repair, apparently not many folks come here to work out! Located on the 10 mile biking/talking trail down the lakefront and through town. In spite of the wooden construction it was surprisingly quiet. Only drawback--windows don't open, probably for good reason (safety). Beds fairly comfy, pillows were foam only, AC was fine with a nice quiet fan that you could run for background sound during the evening. Didn't watch TV (why turn on the TV at a place like this?

WE CELEBRATED OUR 47TH ANNIVERSARY AT THIS GRAND HOTEL .. WHAT A BEAUTIFUL VIEW OF THE BAY! The hotel itself has a lot of history . This was our first trip to Ashland Wisconsin. We have stayed in many Hotels in the Duluth Area. We decided to stay in Ashland after seeing a picture of this Hotel on the Best Western website. I would definitely stay Again. We enjoyed our 2 nights there!

We arrived after a long, drive. We visit the Ashland area a couple times a year. We were given a very nice room with a beautiful view of Lake Superior. The hotel itself has a lot of " vintage hotel " charm. I think it is the highest priced hotel in town but we think it's worth it. The pool area and hot tub also face the lake and have always been clean and in good working order. The restaurant and bar are downstairs near the pool with outside seating. We love this place. It's comfortable ! It's not 5 star but pretty darn close.

I've stayed here several times now and will likely stay here again. It's nicely decorated, clean, quiet, and right smack in the shores of beautiful Lake Superior. We ate at the restaurant in the hotel and it was very good, and reasonably priced. Highly recommend hotel and restaurant.

I've driven by here for years and never stopped. I had a meeting here and it gave me a reason for a visit. Rooms are average BW, nothing too special. Hotel overall is amazing and in great condition. The parlor and deck behind the front desk should not be missed. In regards to the conference room... Room was small but good, and catering was fine.

We were very pleased with our stay here. Loved the old fashioned decor and feel. Service was excellent. The view was amazing! The suite we stayed in was very nice. Walking trails along the lake, nice amenities in town. We will definitely stay here again!

Love visiting the Ashland and Bayfield areas, touring the islands, etc, but our favorite place to stay is at The Hotel Chequamegon/Best Western!! Recently had family from down south visiting and all enjoyed their stay at The Hotel Chequamegon with the beautiful view of Lake Superior!!

Nice hotel to stay at. Complimentary cookies and coffee in the lobby. Rooms are very clean and have nice decor. TV remotes come in a little pouch that says "Fresh remote for you" or something like that. Nothing sucks like a soiled remote. Will definitely stay here again.

We had 12 foot high ceilings with a comfortable bed, good linen and a nice clean bathroom. We enjoyed the location and walked 3 blocks to a nice restaurant and then on the way home saw "The Huntsman" so good all around. Lovely quaint town with this hotel as a restful way to explore. Also a wonderful patio.

spend time with my family. having quality time with daughter thats all i have too say. would stay much longer.hot tub should be hotter more plug ins. need more room in one bedroom units. theres not much else except i havent gotten any rewads yet.

Overall I enjoyed the stay at this reconstructed nostalgic hotel. Room was comfortable and roomy! I did not enjoy the meal that I had in the restaurant, it may have just been that specific entree (Herb encrusted walleye (could't taste the walleye)) because I heard other customers rave about the the food they had. Free breakfast was really above other places that I stayed. Probably the best place in town. Nice location on the lake and right on a walking path.

The stay and up grade was great except for the phone not working right. Other then that it was a great stay as I normally get during the spring stay. I always stay at the Best Western during the spring show. The last summer show is not good because of parking problems.

This is likely the best hotel in town. With it's on-site dining, it is top hotel in the region. All wood construction, leading to noisy building. You can hear everything around you, and this can be a problem for light sleepers. The walking in front of the room, upstairs, and for me (by the desk) made a 10 night stay seem like an eternity.
