    « The SHINING »

Really nice welcome receptionist couldn't of been nicer, although as my header states!! Creepy and dated, the iron and ironing board were older than me!! Needed to have He-Mans finger to flush the toilet, the menu didn't excite me so ate out each night!! Breakfast was average, although the view in the morning was amazing, wouldn't choose to stay here again, although if on a budget it's worth it x

    « Over nighter »

The Palace Hotel in Douglas is a nice hotel its reasonably priced and the rooms are clean and comfortable. I have 1 minor gripe and that was I was in a Twin room and the bed was small (single) and the mattress was like a bouncy castle, other than that the room was of a good standard. A good thing WIFI is free and in all rooms. Breakfast was a buffet help yourself 1 gripe the waiting staff took a long time to ask if we wanted tea or coffee but when they did the drinks came quick. The main reason for the visit was to go to the Casino which was part of the hotel - It had the standard table games and roulette and slot machines. 1 gripe the slots paid out coins, it would be better to have a voucher ticket to take to the cash desk for pay outs. The table games were good and staff knew how to manage them. worth saying here.

« Clean, friendly but in need of modernisation »

The staff here are great, friendly and efficient and will do all they can to make your stay pleasant. It is reasonably priced, the rooms are fairly spacious and clean although the bathrooms are quite small. Plus location is excellent and facilities are good: free WiFi throughout, the health centre is worth a visit and the bar, restaurant and casino are all good facilities. However there is a sense of 'tiredness' about the whole place, from the single glazing through to the dated décor and aged lifts. This place would benefit greatly from some modernisation, but in the meantime you'll have a perfectly comfortable stay and will be well looked after by everyone here - just make sure you get a sea view otherwise you'll be looking at a construction site.

    « Amazing food »

The best western on the isle of man is amazing, we just poped in for drink and never looked back. We went everyday for tea as the food was out of this world, the staff couldn't do enough for you . We had a table overlooking the sea wow. Nead less to say we are going back but stayed in the hotel this time.carnt wait !!!

« Staff were good, hotel needs updating. »

Stayed here for two nights on business in Nov 2016. would have given 4 marks but disappointed that neither myself or my colleague were offered an upgrade to a sea view room even though we were told on check in that the hotel was very quiet. it would have been a nice gesture. The room was ok, nice and clean. The leisure centre was very good with good facilities and a good size pool. Breakfast was also good, good choice of cereals, cooked and fresh fruit. I also ate in the bar one lunchtime and early evening and the food was good quality. There is a good likely hood that i will have to return to the island and i would consider staying here again.

« Great hotel in Douglas »

The room was clean, and a decent size and a fantastic sea-view. We had an awesome breakfast, not over cooked, not sat there going dry. The staff were friendly and helpful. The location was perfect for a night in Douglas or a trip to Laxey or Ramsey. Also situated minutes from the ferry port making it easy to find on departure and easy to get to the port when leaving the island.

    « Family visit »

Stayed 4 nights, very friendly and efficient staff at check in. Room comfortable, sea view, needs a little update. Breakfast was fine, plenty of choice. Situated central promenade so 10 to 15 minute walk to town centre/shopping area. Nightclub and casino situated in the building, but we did not here any late night revelling or music, we where situated on the 4 th floor , also very little noise from traffic using the promenade.

    « Excellent! »

Good room on 4th floor with amazing sea views..well kitted out, decent size good shower.....spectacular sunrise...well worth paying extra for! Superb breakfast all you need, including croissants! Helpful staff. Close to attractions this is a good base. Happy to pay the parking charge, plenty of spaces.

    « On the decline »

I've stayed at this hotel now twice a year for the past six. Unfortunately this will probably be the last. It could really do with a make over as the rooms and hallways are looking dated and have that musty smell a lot of hotels get. The bedroom I had faced onto the car park. Which wouldn't of been that bad if I didn't have youths in there cars late at night parked under my window making a noise. The bed was the most uncomfortable I've ever laid on. The heating had a mind of its own. It also wasn't v clean. There was someone else's personal towel hung up on the back of the bathroom door, with a coat hanger. A wine glass on the floor next to the bed and some crumbs on the floor. Breakfast was pretty good, good choice. I ate in the bar a couple of times and I couldn't fault what I had. There is a casino which now has a Chinese restaurant with it. The staff were pleasant and mostly helpful. Other than asking one of them where the nearest place to watch the football on tv. She told me jaks in town 20min walk. So went there, got back fancied one last drink so went into the casino and they had sky sports on the TVs,s ! Going to try elsewhere next year.

    « Autumnal Holiday »

Very clean very nice hotel, worth getting a balcony for view over harbour / Douglas front. Breakfast hearty if a little costly, car(bike) parking, and only a short walk to town centre .not the most attract building from outside but don't let that put you off. Very good value for money and staff excellent.

« Once upon a time this was the place to stay in Douglas. Now, alas, its tired and requires major surgery. »

When, many moons ago, this was part of the Hilton group it was a very nice place to stay. Now sadly it isn't. Our rooms had a splendid view of the rear car park even though some of the sea view rooms were vacant. Not only that, The air conditioning extractor fan assemblies were directly below our windows, also some waste bins. The smells and the noise meant we had to close the windows whilst in the rooms. The noise levels from the departing casino clientele at night was even more appalling. I have to say that the rooms were clean and the housekeepers cheerful and polite. Two more things. The fire alarms triggered at 02.30 hrs on Sunday morning. Stood in the carpark surrounded by boozed up casino losers.......nice one! And lastly why do they add insult to injury and charge residents to use the carpark? Best Westerns are usually ok, Unfortunately not this one. By the way its £13.00p for a really mediocre breakfast.

« Weekend of coastal walking »

This hotel is ideally situated on the promenade about a 25 minute bus journey from the airport. Buses from and to the airport, run about every 20 minutes. Unfortunately check in runs from 4pm, I arrived early, but by 3pm my room was ready. Check in process went very smoothly indeed. I was on the second floor in room 206, there is a lift, but I found it quicker to take the stairs. The room is small, but very compact, and faces the wooded area behind the hotel. The flat screen TV could do with updating, as there are many more digital channels on offer now, and BBC3 could be taken off the list, as it no longer operates. I have to say, the bed and pillows produced the best nights sleep, I've ever had in a hotel - the mattress is firm, and the pillows , while soft, bounce back to the original shape after sleeping on them. The room is very quite, and made for a good nights sleep. The bath is quite small, well for me anyway at 6ft 2, but the bath fills quite quickly, there is a shower if you prefer. The aminities are ok, although very strange tops on them, you have to pull off first..The toilet requires a very strong thumb to operate the flush. In the room itself, tea, coffee, milk, sugar, and cadbury's to chocolate is provided. Breakfast is served from 0700 - 1100, and from 0730 on Sunday. The price at £12.95 is a bit steep, but I found an excellent choice on offer in the buffet, and you can place an order for additional items not featured there. The swimming pool is very impressive, its a refundable £1 for the locker, and £2 refundable for a towel. The pool and gym is open to non residents to - the hours are 0700 - 2200. The wifi is free, all over the hotel, and I found very strong. There was a fire alarm drill on Sunday morning at 0130 - as there has to be by law, once a year - but this was operated very smoothly, and guests were allowed back into the hotel after about 15 minutes. All in all a great place for a weekend away, and only 5 minute walk into the city centre, where you can catch buses to most places on the island.

« Comfortable but average hotel. »

Very noisy first night when casino or night club emptied as our room overlooked car park. Rest of the week no complaints. Bed comfortable. Nice continental breakfast. Staff very pleasant. Husband made use of sauna and pool every evening. Good base for exploring IOM. They charged us £15 for a weeks parking permit

« Really good hotel, for all the family, spoilt by some of its clientele. »

There were some brilliant aspects to staying at the Palace - friendly, helpful staff and the food both spot on. Our well kept rooms were decent enough also and the sea views we pre-booked were breathtaking. I guess one the hotel's attractions, the casino, is also one of its downsides, for us anyway. We stayed for 4 nights and every night I was woken by noise in the corridors in the early hours of the morning. This was exacerbated on the last two nights by the residents of the room next door, which had a connecting door, from one of them vomiting (pretty sure it wasn't anything they ate!) to shouting loudly - it was way too much, especially on the last night with an early start the next day to catch the ferry. Come on people! Have fun, but equally show some respect!! Perhaps a bit of 'polite reminders' signage from the hotel wouldn't go amiss? Mind you it wasn't just the residents who weren't always polite, we used the adjacent health club and this seemed to work well during the day with children and their parents having fun in the pool, whilst at the same time plenty of opportunities for grown up stuff could be had in the gym, saunas and steam room. This didn't stop one member saying very loudly to her friend in the foyer 'look it's full of bloody kids we've come at the wrong time'. Perhaps this sums up a problem - trying to be too many things to too many people?

    « Great stay »

Lovely hotel. We booked 2 rooms as were with friends.Had 2 superior double rooms with sea view. Found the bathroom a bit of a squeeze.Next time will probably look for better deal as we booked room only...

    « Lovely relaxing hotel »

The room as always clean and comfortable with a beautiful sea view...all staff helpful and help to make stay enjoyable...food first class...only let down was in the Palace slots room where many older locals are openly hostile and territorial and downright rude to holiday makers who they say shouldnt be there.....so may not return as have always enjoyed a play in the bingo and slots room - but enjoyment ruined this time

    « Fantastic location & casino »

All ways stay here when I get stuck in the Isle of Man when the boat carnt get me back . Very modern , very clean. Off road carparking which is hard for some hotels in Douglas . The hotel has a casino & full floor of slot machines which passes the time lol . 5 minute walk into the centre . I have stayed in b&bs here for nearly the same amount of money & been very run down with no carparking . Friendly staff . If you ask nicely you get a see view room at know extra cost .

    « Excellent stay! »

Had a lovely time while staying here, great location, great food, great views and great staff. Was really looked after by member of staff called Simon in the restaurant. Had an amazing sea view room with all the extras, will definitely stay here again.

« Good location but unacceptably noisy »

Arrived at the Hotel and was impressed by the location. Checked in and went to room. Room 208. Everything was fine if a little tired. Wandered down town to find a bite to eat. Excellent restaurant at the Savoy just a couple of 100 yards down the road. Returned ready for bed. Room very hot with no apparent way to reduce the heat other than opening a window so this we did. About 1.00am we were awaken by laughing shouting and general jollity which went on and on. Got up and closed the window but that made very little difference. The noise continued until at least 4.30am when I think that exhaustion finally took over and I went to sleep. Breakfast was very good and then we were off for the day. When getting back in in the early evening I approached the front desk to ask for an explanation. There was a young man at the front desk with a trainee badge on his lapel so I waited to speak to an older lady who was helping some other guests. Not really fare to have a go at the trainee. The lady took down my details and complaint but could not explain what had caused the noise but said that she would speak to her manager about it eager young trainee then butted in to proudly say that the noise would be coming from the night club in the hotel which ope at 12.00 - 4.30am. It's like that every weekend. If only I could have captured the look the poor unfortunate got from the older lady. I got back into my room about 5.00pm that evening to find a note pushed under the door from reception offering me an alternative room on the 4th floor but on checking it out it was about 20 feet higher than mine but looking out over the same entrance door so would not have been significantly better. The noise of the revellers arriving by taxi and then leaving drunk shouting and singing in the very early hours again happened similar to the previous night. In summary, a well placed hotel, excellent breakfast and good value but do not stay in any of the rooms overlooking the car park and entrance foyer.

« Possiblt the ugliest building on the promenade, but food and service were good »

Built in glass and concrete in the 1970's and doesn't appear to have had anything spent on it since. The front entrance is dark and dirty and the reception is accessed from the car park at the rear, The carpets are dull and not very clean. The blown double-glazing panels have not been replaced and the restaurant/bar is very dated, though the panoramic view over the bay from there is stupendous. On the plus side, all the staff are friendly and helpful and the food, both at breakfast and dinner were very good. The drinks prices were reasonable. There is a charge for car parking.

« Large and generally well run hotel »

Excellent location facing the sea. Very reasonable prices. Well equipped rooms, many having sea view and balcony. Efficient and friendly staff. Only grumble is extractor fan in bathroom not working -attention promised!

« A special occasion and they did us proud »

We visited for a few days for my Aunt's birthday. There were 14 of us and the staff were on their toes to ensure we had everything we needed. We pre-booked the accommodation and benefitted from the advanced purchase rate. We did our homework and found that it was the most economical Hotel by far considering the facilities available, not least the casino. Our rooms were clean and well maintained. Each had a balcony and an excellent bay view. At dinner, we enjoyed the carvery although steak was also available as part of the fixed price deal. Breakfast was buffet style and plentiful. Although the Hotel carpark has a modest daily charge there is free parking on the promenade almost right outside the Hotel's promenade door. We feel that this Hotel cannot be faulted even though some postings are a bit ropey. Our story is one of total satisfaction.

    4
    « Could do with a revamp »

Hotel was comfortable and clean though a bit tired. Isle of Man is generally expensive and this offered good value. Did not particularly like the idea of entering Hotel through the doors of a casino, but once inside things improve. Would definitely stay again.

    2
    « Avoid the back »

If you have to stay here, avoid the rooms on the rear of the hotel . Our room overlooked the kitchen extractor fans, and so was noisy and smelly, making opening the window unacceptable. That in turn caused the room to be too warm.

    3
« Shame about the noise »

Reasonable hotel. Good breakfast. Average size rooms, clean. Mattress uncomfortable. Room too hot, so had to have window open at night. Unfortunately our room overlooked the extractor fan for the kitchen, so lots of smells. Also next to two huge air vents for the casino. Ran all night, very noisy. The large car park is used throughout the night because of the casino, so there is quite a bit of noise from this as well. Fine for a night or two, but we stayed a week, so wish we had gone for a more expensive option. Shame because the staff are lovely and the food is fine.

« Service is very Good! »

Stayed here for three nights during a business trip. Had a slight issue which was beyond control of the staff, but the way the staff responded to it was second to none. Extremely good service ( which I think is often overlooked now days). Would happily return. I had a sea view room which was delightful. Bed and facilities were comfortable and clean. I worked during the nights so slept during the day and noise during the day was to a minimum (extremely rare in a hotel). Breakfast is full of choice and well maintained. Could not fault it and being a foodie really began to look forward to it. I had two evening meals in the bar area and could not fault the quality or price. Very yummy! My only dislike was the board that the food arrived on, but staff happily gave me a plate when asked. All in all, I had a very pleasant stay.

    « There's Better on the island »

Stayed here for one night on business. Hotel as a lot of things to do inside i.e. Casino nightclub restaurants and a cinema onsite. Not bad but could do with a update. Do have to pay for parking. 3 stars

    3
    « A good 3* at best »

Ok where do I start...... Apparently one of the best hotels on the island.... Nearly Everything about this hotel is average.... Double room. Very small and basic with a car park view. On a Positave note it was clean :-) Decor: very old and dated. Staff. Very pleasant, friendly and helpful. Food. Average Parking. Ample at £4 This is far from luxury but fit for purpose if your here for a quick trip. Location: close proximity to the "beach" and shops. From reading this even I'm thinking maybe my opening comment is a bit harsh but the reality is I expected more for a 4* and one of the best hotels on the island. Value. Fair.... But don't very close to london prices. Hope this helps

    « Nice stay »

I have stayed here a few times now and always request a room over looking the sea as the rooms at the back can be a bit noisy with deliveries and kitchen fan etc so worth the extra money for a good nights sleep. Room is comfortable but shower is a challenge to regulate to a comfortable temperature and quite weak in water pressure. Had a bar meal, burger which was delicious and definitely an upgrade on previous visits. Breakfast a buffet and would suit all tastes. Staff also very friendly and accommodating. I will return.

    4
    « Quality Breakfast »

Stayed here 4 nights in Sept 2016. Sea View room had balcony and a good view over Douglas Bay. The standard of the room was good, only critisism was NO air Conditioning, although a table top fan was provided. A small fridge would also be good. The buffet breakfast was of EXCELLANT quality, served in a pleasant dining room. The entrances to the hotel leave a liittle to desired, with access off the promenade, into a depressing corrider, with poor signage to reception on the first floor. The alternative entrance is at the rear through the car park, which is a long walk, if on foot from the promebade. IHowever I will be re-visiting soon!

    4
    « Not too bad »

Stayed here for 4 nights in a room with a sea view. The outside of the hotel is scruffy and not welcoming. The reception is on the 1st floor. When we arrived the guy in reception was good. Our room on the fourth floor was a bit on the small size but had everything you would expect. We had a balcony, but it was so small you couldn't sit out on it. The view was great. The only problem we had with the room was the sound of traffic from the road outside, even with the patio door closed it woke me every morning. Breakfast was a buffet and was very good with attentive staff.

    4
    « Happy return visit. »

We have just returned from a 7 night stay, and have already book our next visit. We received a warm and cheerful welcome, on checking in. Our rooms were clean and comfortable. The sea view was incredible, and we enjoyed the sunrise every morning. The food choice at breakfast was plentiful, and we thought all elements were fresh and prepared with care. We used the hotel restaurant in the evening, once. We thought the food was of a high standard. The staff in all areas of the hotel, with whom we came into contact with, were friendly, cheerful and helpful. The hotel has a lot going for it, but its greatest asset is the staff. We were sad to leave, and looking forward to our 5th visit, in March.

    2
    « Casino »

We have stayed at this hotel before and enjoyed an hour playing roulette for minimum stakes. However this last time we visited they ha 'American Roulette' tables. I had never heard of them being a total amateur playing for fun, but the number board tht displays the number history was not there and we could not here the croupier, we will not be going back.

    4
« No bad experiences for us »

We have just returned from a lovely week on the Isle of Man. Our stay at the BW Palace Hotel was absolutely fine. Our room was adequate, if a bit dated, clean and well serviced daily. We found the staff helpful both at reception and in the restaurant. We had no concerns about the parking charge, a staple in other hotels we have visited recently. Our room faced the seafront, was above the restaurant and casino. We had initial concerns about the possible noise, but in fact this was never an issue and we had the window open most evenings.

« Upset over extra charge »

I stayed at the hotel 1 week ago today, having stayed on 3 previous stays. Had reasonably pleasant stay but on check out I was some what upset at the attitude of the check out member of staff. I was presented with my bill with added extras on, firstly I was charged for drinks I hadn't had or signed for, her response was oh dear this keeps happening it's the bars fault. Secondly I had a charge for a local call to douglas to pay, I was somewhat surprised to be told it was for £3.10. I was only on the phone for less than 30 seconds to check on a car that was at the local garage which was located less than half a mile away. The reason I phoned was that 5 weeks previously I had suffered a stroke and had difficulty walking that distance to check on the car. The attitude of the member of staff was somewhat unsympathetic and didn't seem to care less. I will be returning to the island again shortly as my son has recently moved there for his job, but I will seriously rethink my plans for accommodation in the future at best western. I was even encouraged on arrival to join the loyalty scheme, you know what they can do with that now!

« Good for business travel »

Good spacious rooms with workspace, views at the front very agreeable. Bathrooms a disaster so it is easier to get showered and shaved in the leisure centre. Food very good, restaurant and bar staff excellent and very pleasant and helpful (but incapable of pouring Guinness properly). Carvery excellent but the a la carte a real treat and worth the wait. Try the specials at breakfast - very good indeed! Pool and changing rooms good but not Olympic standard (as some guests expect). My choice of hotel when travelling but must agree that it is very jaded and needs a good "seeing to". Have to agree with other comments about reception who I felt were not really concerned about guests (as opposed to all other restaurant, bar and domestic staff who were excellent). Car parking charges introduced recently is just banditry. Wi-Fi very poor but reception (??? - see other comments) told me this was temporary - they have been telling me this since 2011. Looking for other alternatives before I book again for Manx travel.

    1
    « Absolutely awful »

This is one hotel to be avoided, grubby entrance lobbies with stained furniture was only the beginning of a very bad experience, avoid room 220 or rooms adjacent to it at all costs, a huge ventilator fan is right outside the window and it is on all nigh,t the noise is deafening you would have to be deaf to get any sleep in the room. Cobwebs covered in dust hang from the ceilings like stalactites they have been there that long. Nothing above shoulder height had been dusted in many a long day and everything other than the bedlinen and towels look grubby and uncared for. The reception staff seem to be unable to make any decisions without refering to management and just spend all their time apologising for the hotels deficiences, sorry but apologies aren't enough when you have problems that need resolving. We were promised a different room by the manager when it was vacated, but when we returned to reception later in the day to get the key they knew nothing about it and we could not have the promised room, after spending nearly half an hour waiting for management to sort it out they finally gave us another room supposedly an upgrade to a seaview room, the windows were filthy we complained and someone cleaned of one of the worst marks but left the rest as it was, we gave up in despair as we were leaving the next day. The only good thing about this place was the restaurant for breakfast, where the staff and the food were good, particularily the Manx kippers. The cleaning staff were also very pleasant but they have an uphill task to bring this place to the standards that customers of today expect, they need to shut the place down for a month and give it a proper deep clean. Reception staff need to be given some level of responsibility to enable them to resolve customer complaints and management needs to step up to the box and sort out the issues.

    3
    « Looking Tired »

I have been to this hotel for a number of years now and I go back because of the convenience and location, however now it is starting to look tired and really could do with a make over in all area's, reception, restaurant, rooms and leisure center. The staff were as usual very pleasent and helpful, cleaning staff very efficient, the only thing letting it down were the small details which make a good hotel great. Would I go back.... well yes I would but I may look else where first !. Oh and charging £4 a day to park at the hotel whats that all about......

reception untidy ,receptionist and manager just plain ignorant, room dirty with black spiderwebs hanging from the ceiling ,and a what looked like a hole in the bath bodged up with silicone, silicone around the bath half done, only an overhead shower worked from the taps and a horrible shower curtain, big extractor fan at the back of the building from the kitchens, everything grubby, no communication between the two reception shifts , write complaints down but do not act, we were moved and had to go ask the reception to clean the sliding doors to what was called a terrace as it looked as if some one had thrown up on them, even showed the manager the ceiling of our room and a room opposite that had the door open, the stairs are open to the public from the casino entrance to all floors thus avoiding the reception area, even the taxi driver and locals said it is disgusting one even asked us to write to the tourist board, the trouble the island do not have the score on the doors hygiene certificates as the mainland,

« SHEARINGS TOUR - ISLE OF MAN 5 DAYS »

Stayed at Palace Casion hotel for five days. Bit concerned after reading some reviews. Pleasantly surprised. Did not feel the entrance that bad, at least on the flat for some of the older guests, two lifts. Restuarant and bar area very nice. We ate in a room just off as we were a coach tour, which again very nice large round tables views of the sea front. Food excellant. Carvery each night and also another couple of choices. Meat cooked beautifully, compliments to the chef. Nice choice of veg etc. Starter soup or an array of salad, prawns muscles etc. The desserts wonderful choice of cakes, fruit, ice cream, cheese and biscults all sorts and varied each night. The staff very pleasant and helpful. The rooms are the only down side. Nice and clean, but small and also the bathroom again not very big, not a lot of space to put your clothes if staying more than 2 nights. Yes also agree with other review about the noise of the fans, we to were over them and had to have window open as warm, they do provide a fan for you in the room though. Having said that nice selection of tea, coffee and even hot chocolate in room and biscults everyday also we were with Shearings and may be as on a coach tour or may be all guest receive a free £5 token to use in the casino which was really kind. Not been in one before so nice to experience and we won £10 which bought the drinks so good fun. The Shearings tour was very good, nice trips, shame we had fog a few days for view of Snaefell and Calf of Man, but lovely Island and we did not have time, but the horse and trams looked really good £3 or £6 for a day pass, so good value, as the shops are a bit of walk from the hotel the bus £1.10 single from hotel to shops. The local people are lovely too and friendly a very nice place to visit and the hotel is in a good spot with lovely views of the sea and even at the back, yes you have the car park, but you also have a nice hill side with fairy lights at the top. I forgot to ask at the hotel what the large white castle was on the hill above them, perhaps if you reply to this you could let me know, just wondered if another hotel or apartments or something else. Thanks to all the staff at the hotel for making our stay a good one.

« Rooms OK but a bit tired in general »

Similar complaint to an earlier review, our room was at the back of the hotel and over looked the carpark. again we were above the fans from the kitchen and the noise was constant. We also had the bin lorry wake us most mornings when taking the rubbish away. The room was small but had everything you'd need, biscuits refreshed daily and plenty of tea/coffee and importantly milk. No AC, but we had a portable fan. Rooms also have hairdryers and irons/ironing boards. Location was good central prom, and the room was serviced daily, (bedding not changed tho) but generally the decor is a bit tired and the whole hotel could do with redecorating, we visited during classic TT week, so paid the obvious premium every business in the IOM seems to add on during both the TT events! In general the room was clean and tidy, but overpriced for the condition of it.

« Nothing to complain about »

We had 3 nights, and it was fine, the shower could have had more water pressure, but otherwise the room was clean and fine, the breakfast was a buffet style, so not amazing but adequate, we had one evening meal, once again buffet style, the choice of starters was very good, and plenty of choice for main, so once again good but not amazing. One big high point, was someone bringing my charger down to reception as I was checking out, that's customer service, so I left a happy customer, and will have no problem going back! Thanks for a good weekend.

    « Not what I was expecting for a 4 star hotel »

Our room was at the back of the hotel and over looked the carpark. Unfortunately we were above the fans from the kitchen and the noise was constant. We spoke to the management and were advised that there were no other rooms available, the receptionist recommended wearing earplugs and assured us that the kitchens would be closed at 11 and the noise should stop then, it didn't. The breakfast had plenty of choice and the items cooked to order were nicely presented. On one morning we were shown to a table where there was scrambled egg on the floor around the table and chairs. We told the staff and were shown to a different table. What concerned me was a member of staff picked up the egg off the floor and then went on to lay up other tables with cutlery and crockery and handle food dishes without washing her hands. The room was small but was well equipped. It was very hot and unfortunately we couldn't open the window owing to the noise and and smell of the fans below. There was mould around the bath and the fitting of the bath panel was very rudementary. Overall, we were disappointed that this was not a 4 star hotel as promised. We feel a 3 star rating would be more appropriate.

« Room for the Classic TT »

The four point review is based on the whole IOM Classic TT Experience. Didn't check-in until 4 as oddly that is the check-in time! (2 is a more acceptable time) The member of staff at the desk was in my opinion trying to be too humourous. It was 4 and warm and you can imagine after watching the bikes flying up towards the Bungalow, our need for the check-in process to be professional, short and sweet. The room 236, more than adequate, no AC but a fan in the cupboard. A hairdryer, an iron and board. The complimentary coffee/tea and flat screen TV. Free WiFi, that's if the member of staff who checks you in gives you the login details! You maybe wondering why I mention the room number! Avoid it like the plague as the hotel has placed a smoking area just below the room. If you enjoy the inane blethering of other guest at all hours then this is the room for you. From motorcycles to fine ales to the sexual conquests of spotty neds, you get it all! Oh the screaming laughter of the German women are an early, early morning call! Cry of the Valkyrie... That's room 236.

    « Past it's sell by. »

Arrived on the late ferry, we had a twin room with sea view, and did not sleep at all for the first night due to the mattress on one of the beds being totally worn out, I could feel the bed frame base through the mattress, and the noisy springs dug in all night. The next day we explained at reception at 8am,and were assured the matress would be changed. At 6pm, after several reminders we approached the new receptionist, who actually took the trouble to attend to the matter - so well done and thanks to her!! It then took a further hour for the duty Manager to change the mattress for one from another room. It was not much better actually, but pity the poor person who got the swop. We did however get free drinks in our room that night. During busy times the hotel really does not cope at breakfast, slow replenishment of hot food, not enough tables, and the single toaster is a nightmare if you have the time to queue for it. The food (eventually) is good and plentiful. The queues are however no fun at all. Likewise in the evening, the food is reasonable but the small, hot and dingy bar does not make for a pleasant experience. Why no ventilation? The bedrooms and bathrooms are looking decidedly shabby and in dire need of refurbishment and modernisation, the only ventilation is through the open doors, and the traffic noise is loud and constant. There is also a nightclub at weekends, so you may hear the music. The view however from the front rooms is very good indeed. On the plus side there is plenty of parking, on the minus side you now must pay £4 a night for the privilege. The spa is looking worse than ever, and I suspect is now a serious health hazard. This is not a cheap hotel, and frankly is not now worth the money. This hotel used to be very good indeed, sadly it could now do with a refurbishment and a dose of Alex Polizzi.

    « Classic TT stay »

Booked a twin room to stay in while visiting for the Classic TT races on the 29th August. The hotel was ideally located to travel to a number of the best viewing spots and the paddocks. It offered a number of facilities but was within easy walking along the prom to a large number of other restaurants and pubs. On a whole the room served its purpose but was disappointed when the staff weren't as concerned as we were when we reported the room kettle was cracked and leaking water onto the plug or that we were having to shower using the torches on our phones as the bulb had gone. That said I would probably stay there again as it was well priced.

    « Lovely week »

We had a great stay at the Palace last week. Came for practice week for Manx TT and found that this hotel was a good base. We had a deluxe room on third floor, lovely view and very quiet. Breakfast was great and also the restaurant food on an evening. Staff were always attentive and helpful. We visited the pool a few times and that was lovely for a gentle swim, not good for lengths. I can't think of anything negative to say other than the bed was a bit noisy getting in and out but very comfy. I would come back to this hotel.

The best location right on the sea front room plenty big enough my only problem is the traffic noise it could do with triple glazing good breakfast staff will do anything to help and very polite food all round was very good there is also a Chinese restaurant in the casino which is very good .The isle of man is so so pretty and picturesque the best place to unwind and relax . As mentioned there is also a casino at this hotel the only one on the island.

    « GREAT TIME »

My husband and I along with my brother, his wife and their son and daughter-in-law and grandson and also their daughter and partner all stay in the Best Western Palace Hotel and Casino as we were there for a family wedding. We all enjoyed our stay. The food was excellent as was the service. Also the swimming pool was excellent for an early morning swim. We would all definitely stay here again as it was central for our needs.

« Pleased with our stay. Food great, room comfortable and great location »

The hotel looks a little tired from the front but the staff on reception were very welcoming. Our room was comfortable, clean and well laid out. There was plenty of storage for clothes, etc. The bathroom was well kept with very hot water, clean towels and a bath with shower attachment. The room overlooked the back of the hotel, near the air conditioning units, but the sound was not intrusive so did not disturb us. We were with a coach party so ate in a separate dining room but the menu was excellent, lots of starters offered buffet style, and then the main course served as a carvery with plenty of veg, followed by a choice of deserts served buffet style again. The food was great with plenty of options. There is a small bar which can get quite busy at times. There is also a swimming pool, hot tub and sauna next door in the health centre which was free for us to use. The hotel also offered a £5 voucher to be used in the casino or bingo hall (located a little further along the building) which came in handy, especially as we won a fair bit. The location is great - overlooking the seafront and convenient for catching the horse-drawn trams or just strolling along the prom. We bought a day-pass for travelling on the tram, train, bus and any other public transport and that was great value. We certainly had a very good holiday at the hotel and would go back again if we revisit the island.

    « Lovely staff »

Me and a friend just recently stayed at this hotel for 4 nights, the hotel staff could not do enough for you, they are so friendly and chatty. You have a brilliant choice for continental breakfast, also cooked breakfast, the food is excellent. We had a room at the back of the hotel, it was a comfortable though very warm, there is a fan on the room, and unfortunately never dusted, although the manager David was brilliant he got it sorted that, however I would stay at this hotel again

    3
    « Honest review »

It is obvious that staff are trying hard to deliver a good service it seems that the management in place do not share the same ethos this place will only succeed if the management are honest with themselves and deliver good customer service there is a beautiful view from the restaurant but it is cornered off for breakfast which is 12 hours later maybe somebody needs to realise the potential

    4
    « Don't be put off »

There seems to be a number of contradictions about this hotel and its facilities.I can say however that the experience for us over our four night stay there was very good. We were greeted by a trainee at the front desk who was very friendly and efficient and this set the tone with other staff members that we came into contact with. It is worth paying a little more for the sea view unless you have a thing about car parks.I found the position of the toilet was not well thought out and the mattress did sound nearly as creaky as I do when I first get out of bed but it did not detract from a good nights sleep.Air conditioning can be beneficial certainly for hot days in summer which we did not experience ourselves so the fan in the room was sufficient. We ate in the bar one night but were so pleased with the quality and cost of the food that we dined in the restaurant for the following two nights and enjoyed the same high standards. One of my pet hates is the design of a swimming pool where the jacussi juts out cutting down swimming space. I like to swim lengths but this did not prove to be very easy here especially when some space was taken up by people more determined to chat than exercise The steam room is also a little snug. I was able to park on the main road directly outside the hotel every night even though it was the middle of August so I see no benefit in paying the hotel parking charges. Otherwise take note of the review title and enjoy as we did.

« Filthy place with terrible food and service »

I am a Platinum card holder - they did my recognise the membership scheme. Cramped dirty room with bodily fluids on the bed and a faulty toilet and bath shower mixer that only allowed a shower. Carvery food inedible. Staff refused to change my room, but they did change the dirty linen. Avoid. Go the Empress hotel instead. Hotel needs a total refurbishment - the health club is a health hazard.

    « Holiday »

After looking on Trip Advisor we weren't quite sure what to expect. we were very pleased with out experience here. Lovely, helpful staff throughout the hotel, from housekeeping through to management, andlovely meals, with virtually no queuing at the carvery. We were on the top floor at the back and had no problems with noise apart from one day deliveries around 7a.m. but we were awake anyway. The decor, as others have said is quite a throwback to the 60s/70s, but then again the whole island has a laid-back mid 20th century feel about it.!!! Perhaps the only thing that needs some attention are the mattresses. Our bed was in some need of a new one!

« good base for the island »

Bar and public areas need update still in the 60's.Food is good, breakfast has every possible choice.Good value for money. The rooms have great views over Douglas and the beach.Rooms have everything you need, bathrooms as the room are on the small side.If your tall or well built you may have problems in the bathroom.Service is good except at the bar[except for John]which at best was poor, heaven help if the place was full, waiting for a coffee tested your patience.Would stay again a lot more positives than negatives.

« Superb room, excellent service and real value for money »

We spent five days in Douglas and really enjoyed our top floor room with Balcony and Sea View. The room was spotlessly clean, spacious with a comfortable bed and equally spotless en suite. We stayed B&B and enjoyed the buffet-style breakfast each day. High quality food available in copious quantities - hot and cold - continental and traditional. Our 5-Day B&B stay cost less than £500 which was remarkable value. Most days we had a meal in the bar. Meals were of high quality and prices modest. Service in the bar and dining room was friendly, efficient and courteous. It seemed a bit mean to charge residents for parking and the receptionist did not draw our attention to this on arrival. However the cost was modest at £15 for the five days. Reception staff were for the most part friendly and helpful. The hotel is more or less in the middle of Douglas' promenade and so offers spectacular views all the way from the Marine terminal to Derby Castle - impressive especially at night. Heartily recommended

« Run down and in need of a revamp »

Stayed sat + sun eve. Told could have early check in as at wedding until very late, not done, but easy at 1.30 a.m so not too annoyed. Room very poor for price (£160 for 2 nights). Bathroom disgrace. Bath and toilet arrangement meant no room for legs on toilet. Bath seen better days and curtain stuck to you making it unpleasant. Sink didn't drain properly. Bed ok. Best bit was view over Douglas bay and prom. For price was disappointed as more of a cheap hotel but really in need of investment.

    « Worst Western »

I've visited the Isle of Man on many occasions and always stayed a budget hotel, which has suited me as it was always clean with very pleasant staff. However, I needed to make a trip and as I was staying for a few days decided to book (what I thought) was an upmarket hotel. I booked 4 weeks in advance of my trip through Booking.com and paid upfront, so I knew that a refund was not possible. Upon arrival as I stepped through the sea front entrance I knew I made a terrible mistake. The carpets were dark and sticky and the place looked tired, it needed a thorough clean, not a good impression. Once I'd checked in I decided to see the room - the room looked clean, but that is where it all went wrong. All the twin rooms face west over the kitchen and into the sun. Now, I know some people like the heat but it was over bearing even with the windows open. As a result I was exposed to kitchen fumes and noise which (as the hotel is a Casino) would have gone on till late in the night. I couldn't close the windows as it was too hot and the hotel does not have air conditioning. I then asked if could move rooms - this was possible as they had another room (1 only), however I would have had to move back again the following day and after looking at this room it was no better. I asked how it was possible to have such a bad room given that I'd booked well in advance - I was told that the reservations are done/placed in the previous 24 hours. So no help there. I asked at the reception desk if they knew of any good places to eat - a leaflet was thrown and told to have a look at it. On top of this I was told that I would have to pay £4 per night for parking. Given the poor attitude of the staff and the inability to move room I therefore decided not to stay at this hotel (although I'd already paid). I rang the hotel I usually stay at - they fixed me up no problem with a lovely clean and cool room at a lesser cost than this hotel. Over the years I've stayed at many Best Western Hotels - this is by far the worst I've ever been to, If I could I would rate this hotel with zero.

    « Run down. »

To be honest, I think my main beef is with whoever at the IOM tourist board decided that this was a 4 star hotel. It just isn't. I should be less naive. It was cheapish (£100ish per room per night), and I thought I had bagged a bargain. I hadn't. When I got there, I realised that, no, you get what you pay for. This is no more than a very large B&B. A tatty, run down B&B with furnishings and fittings from, apparently, the 1980s. Yes, it has a pool, but it's run down too. And quite cold. The restaurant was pretty poor. The ingredients were cheap and cooked by someone who had long since given up making any effort. I will definitely not be going back.

    « Pleasantly surprised! »

After reading the reviews I was slightly apprehensive about staying here whilst on a recent coach tour to the Isle of Man with my 9 year old grandson, but we both thought it was a great hotel. Rooms were modestly sized but had obviously been refurbished fairly recently and were comfortable. Tea making facilities included sachets of hot chocolate and packs of biscuits - both appreciated by the grandson. The TV had channels such as E4 which the grandson likes watching and the wifi was excellent throughout the hotel. Nice big bath with shower too. Grandson loved the pool at the hotel gym, and since kids were allowed in between 10am and 7pm he managed to squeeze in three visits. There is a cinema right next door too, which could prove useful if the weather was poor. Food was amazing and plentiful. Big breakfast buffet had all the ingredients for a full cooked English or a continental style start to the day. Dinners were three courses, usually with a roast as well as fish and vegetarian offerings. Grandson and I were never short of options we liked. Wide range of dessert choices too. All in all we had a great stay and would recommend this hotel to anyone.

No visible signage to reception from car park if arriving in the dark. Poor directions to reception. First set of room keys didnt work. Room was tiny, stuffy, dirty. No aircon, windows overlooking bin/delivery area (noisy). Poor water pressure for shower. Noise from passing guests as walls must have been thin and banging doors. Beds not comfortable, can't really find a nice thing to say about this place other than the first guy at reception was friendly as he let me off carpark charge as I had no change.

    « Nice for a short break »

Ok it's dated on the outside We stayed room 223 sea view double, naive view all up the front from port to onchan head. Room is just like a normal travelodge premier inn, no frills type room. Clean tidy good condition plenty of room for hanging clothes. Usual amenities tea coffee TVs hairdryer good powerful shower free wifi in rooms.large beds very comfy good blackout curtains. Weather was nice so room warm we left patio window open however there's a fan in the cupboard witch was good. Staff all friendly helpful we were there to cycle and one of janitor came over in carpal advised us on going to tourist info centre where they have ride guides- nice bloke good advice very helpful Ok hotel not modern but some good bonuses use of pool gym for free, it has sauna jacuzzi pool free towels with deposit all good. Free entry to casino and a free £5 bet ok I ain't a casino man however it was ok staff helpful explain the tables bit of fun. Breakfast buffet type good quality food plenty of choice plus extra on the menu to order all included, couple of guests asked for little different requests all seemed to be catered for. Can't be that bad of a hotel as there was two weddings on why we where there so not a dive that people think. 20 min gentle walk to port and all the main shops town centre cinema at the back of hotel.

Not so good. Certainly not "Best". The hotel is, well. tired. It has nice enough staff, but the rroms are just tired. Double glaziong is leaking (condensation). Windoes are just plain dirty. Breakfast is hotel mediocre. Basically, just an uninspiring place to stay. But it does have parking. And a casino if you like that sort of thing.

just stayed here while on short visit. Room and decor bit dated but main problem was level of cleanliness. Overall initially looked ok. checked in late so didn't use shower until next am. Spotted some suspicious marks on tiles which i cleaned off- then unfolded bathmat to find covered on faeces. Took to domestic who was on corridor- she was polite about asking was towel from that am or previous but other than that not apology, no sorry. left her to sort and I left to go out. Room made on return but no message or apology. on check out no one asked if all been ok - slap dash and disappointing.

we stayed here for a couple of nights and really couldn't complain the staff were very friendly, rooms tidy, the bed was very comfortable and we had a sea view which was very quiet during the night. Iron and iron board came in very handy. the only complaint would be that the shower wasn't the best but the shower in our friends room was good. We only stayed for breakfast each morning excellent choice and staff brilliant. We chose this hotel due to the parking and great that we had pre booked a parking pass for the 2 days although only £4 for 24 hours

    « Pluses and Minuses »

First impressions not too good . The sixties building , constructed at a time when British 'architecture' was at its lowest ebb , sticks out like the proverbial sore thumb among the typical seaside villas of Douglas . The rather outdated impression continues on entering the building , everything a bit dark and dreary . The bedrooms ( no a/c but an electric fan is provided ) look rather dated too but everything was perfectly clean and there was an iron and ironing board , as well as the usual facility to make drinks , dry your hair etc . Very impressed that a rubber mat was available for the bath ! However things got better and better . The evening meal was sumptuous even though we were with a coach party , with a wide range of starters , choice of four main courses including fish and vegetarian , an array of gateaux and plenty of cheese and fresh fruit . Breakfast also offered a number of options and all of this served by cheerful . friendly and helpful staff ( as were those on reception as well ) . Avoid the rooms at the back however : the noise of the extractor fans is continuous , there is a smell of cooking from the kitchens at certain times and the 'guests' at the casino can be very noisy between 2 and 3 am .

    « It's ok »

We wanted to visit the Isle of Man and was looking for somewhere to stay. We needed 3 rooms, 2 interconnecting for us and the young boys (8 and 4) and a separate room for Grandad (74). The Palace seemed the best option. The rooms overlooking the sea have a great view. While it is 4 stars it isn't exactly your Hilton, Marriott, Holiday Inn, but that wouldn't work here. It has its quirks, it has the old folks coach trips here, but that is the Isle of Man. It's not polished, it's not grand, it's probably 1990s standard and you'd expect Rick Astley or Bananarama to come and perform on stage to the old folks who are really enjoying themselves in the bar tonight. But that is what makes this hotel great, it so fits in with the location.

    3
    « Stunning Location »

A large, centrally located hotel on the sea-front with a horse tram and bus stop outside, the carpets looked a little weather-beaten. The food was excellent, although the carvery style menu meant I had to collect my main meal and desert myself which felt like I was back at school, for the price of the stay I was hoping to be served my food not get it myself! the many staff were very friendly and helpful and the views from the restaurant were stunning. The sea-front balcony room was clean, bright and airy although I was hugely disappointed that the windows were filthy and encrusted with salt-spray from the beach. On the days that I stayed there was no wind or bad weather and I thought that it must have occurred overnight before I arrived, however, the three days I stayed the windows were untouched and I was very disappointed about this which is why I have, reluctantly, only given 3 stars for my review, I did raise an eye-brow at this because the restaurant windows were spotless! The only other issue I had was the late night noise from the bar on the floor below - granted, it was only on the Saturday night but it was quite intrusive until very late. Other than these small "niggles" I enjoyed my stay - Thank-you.

    « Breakfast is good »

First impressions coming in from basement entrance on sea front is terrible - worn carpets, tatty doors. Room is adequate, space and storage short, bathroom clean and modern. Bar meals OK, Breakfast is great. See if you can get sea view room - they are larger, face sea and don't suffer from noise in car park when casino turns out. Room cleaning service good. Beds good. Position in town good. Public transport good on whole island

    « 4 star.......don't think so »

on Saturday a wedding reception went on till 4am in the car park and reception area our room was right above !!! we and other guests complained but nothing happened, we complained next day as our room was also over the extracter fans for the kitchen we only got moved when i threaten to cancel my weeks stay, the whole exterior is dirty you have to walk through smokers to get to reception. the spa has flaking paint on the ceiling in the pool plus ceiling tiles missing in the pool, the lovely view from the pool is spoilt by misted up d/glazing, the breakfast staff don't even make eye contact or make conversation except Veronica who was very nice, breakfast was ok sent food back twice because it was cold, evening meal is mainly carvery !! the only saving grace was a complementry dinner for our troubles would not give free room upgrade. so in a nutshell the hotel is dated looks like a european tube station would not go back . stayed at the Feathers Hotel in Liverpool on the way home and that is a 4 STAR hotel is was brilliant

« Aging hotel in need of face-lift. Comfortable and helpful staff. »

The hotel is comfortable and the staff helpful. It's looking better than when I last stayed before it was owned by Best Western but still in need of face-lifting. No air conditioning still though, even in the bar/restaurant so it was unpleasantly warm eating and drinking there and I had to leave the balcony door open all night to get any sleep at all due to the heat. Great views from the sea facing room and the bed was comfortable with a good breakfast served.

    « Basic hotel »

Stayed for one night parked across from hotel free for 24 hours room at the back of the hotel. There is no a/c and rooms are very hot put fan on and it helped. Hotel is quite away out of the centre of Douglas and it is the first hotel who want you to have a wash with shampoo because they had forgot to order shower gel. Breakfast is very good but it should not take 15 mins for soya milk however the hotel is dated and needs some money spending on it for the price we paid I cannot moan

    3
« No more than an average 3 star »

No air conditioning in any rooms. Feet stick to the carpets. Good service. Very old, very tired. Needs a whole makeover. Great location but would be very disappointed if I came for longer than 2 nights. Ate out as the food looks average. Would definitely stay in Douglas again but somewhere more modern.

« Better than it looks - but that's not saying much' »

The hotel must be the ugliest building in Douglas. I'd booked it due to the central location & because it had an indoor pool, useful if weather awful. We arrived by taxi that drove us into the car park, what a depressing area. They could do a lot to spruce it up if they wanted to. I have to say my heart sank on arrival & the reception area didn't do anything to lift it. The black & purple carpet had blobs of well trodden chewing gum on it & it all looked rather glum. Is it too difficult to spend some time removing the gum ? The sea view room was actually fine but the shower was particularly feeble. My partner used it first & told me not to bother, we just used the bath after that. The grouting round the bath could do with a good clean. Buy a bottle of Dettol mould remover, it does the job in a couple of mins, it's not hard. The flat roof in front of the balcony had loads of cigarette butts on it, again - just clear them up! They shouldn't be there, no smoking is no smoking not just smoking out of the window. The hairdryer is located behind the TV. I found it on the second day. I know these seem like minor gripes but they all added up to a general air of the place feeling a bit run down. On the plus side breakfast was really good & the staff were friendly & helpful. The bed was comfortable & the view was wonderful. Tea, biscuits etc in the room but no water . A large bottle of sparkling water from the bar cost £4. Due to amazing weather we didn't use the pool so can't comment on those facilities nor the casino.

« Lovely stay but pricey! »

We have just returned from a 3 night stay at the Palace Hotel and Casino in Douglas, Isle of Man. Check in was not till 4pm but we were able to have a drink in the Paragon Bar. Our 3rd floor double, with fantastic sea-view was excellent. Service throughout was what you would expect from a hotel of this quality. Downsides! Breakfast at £12.99 (not taken!) and probably the most expensive bar on the Island? Our ferry was at 3pm but the Palace has a checkout time of 12 noon so we could have a late lie in on our last day. We were astonished to find so many drunks staying at the hotel and I will be contacting management concerning an incident with my wife! Other than that an excellent stay! « Short stay »

Just back from a two night break. Hotel check in 4pm, rather late but no problem leaving luggage at reception until then. We had a second floor room, 211, with a sea view but also a flat roof view and mini balcony. Glass on patio doors did need cleaning. Had them open mostly due to heat, no aircon. Good hairdryer, Iron and board, digital safe and tea/coffee making facilities and free wifi. Overbath shower... the shower head did not stay on the wall correctly. Didn't eat in the hotel bar or restaurant but did eat in the Chinese restaurant located in the casino and it was good. No problems with noise from other guests etc. I would stay in this hotel again.

« BRILLANT HOTEL, EXCELLENT SERVICE »

Love, Love, Love this brillant hotel with excellent customer service. This is our 6th year in a row to this great hotel which every year is made special by the fantastic staff. From Management to Housekeeping, all go out of their way to make your stay memorable. I would have no hesitation in recommending this hotel to anyone who is staying in the Isle of Man. Food is brillant, service brillant what can I say 10/10. I know that we are not the only guests who feel as we do about this great hotel as we speak to and talk to the same people year after year, everyone feels so comfortable. There is a family feel about the place which is not evident with other large hotels which is really appreciated. From check in to check out we throughly enjoyed our stay, so much I am booking next year for my 60th birthday. Thank you soooooo much Best Western, Isle of Man xo

    « Not impressed »

Hi just had two nights wasn't impressed at all as we came from the road walked into what we thought was reception but was up some stairs s bit dark and confusing no direction as to where to go, found it checked and given key cards but no direction as to where room was, found them seemed ok but unfortunately looked out onto the car park and air conditioning and the upper reception area, was Friday evening so we dropped bags and went out till about midnight. Woken up shortly after retiring by loud voices and cars taxis etc tried shutting the window but was very stuffy and hot resigned ourselves to a sleepless night dropped off about 4 o'clock. Woke about nine am to have a shower which was a hose off the bath which wouldn't stay in the bracket for a shower very awkward to say the least. Went had breakfast all good we hadn't pre payed was good value went out for the day bought go explore tickets very good value came in late again after eating in a good restaurant. Unfortunately the noise started again so sleep was hard to come by as the noise started again one of our party rang down to reception to complain but it persisted next day we spoke to the duty manager to complain ongoing

    « Just OK »

We had 5 nights here in a standard double room on the second floor at the rear of the hotel. There is a large noisy extractor unit which meant we had disturbed sleep every night we were there. Despite complaining, there were no other rooms available The rooms are not air conditioned so despite the double glazing, its either too hot or too noisy. The showers are poor, there are no fridges in the rooms which are on the small side. There is also noise most nights from the casino. The breakfasts are good, excellent kippers and the hotel is near bus stops. I would not stay there again.

« Don't let outside put you off »

Stayed here for 3 nights in July Outside is old and tired looking, similar to an old holiday camp. However the inside is clean and tidy, and although rooms a little small, perfectly functional with all amenities you could need including hairdryer, iron and safe Complimentary tea, coffee biscuits and wine, nice touch. We booked a sea view, and although it didn't have a balcony, ( some did) view was quite good - could see all of sea front. Facilities of hotel are great. It has its own bar and restaurant, casino with chinease restaurant , night club and fitness centre and pool/ spa. Food was lovely both from the restaurant and in the mornings for breakfast Breakfast selection was excellent, something for everyone. You will not go hungry All staff we encountered were polite and helpful The building needs some up dating especially the outside, but it is close to Douglas town centre, sea port and steam and electric railways Excellent bus service right outside hotel, for links to the rest of the island including the airport.

    « Poor excuse for a 4 star »

Stayed for 5 nights in this hotel. Check in was fast and efficient. I had requested a sea view room which we got. Unfortunately we had to clean the window with some tissue and water to be able to actually see out of it. The bed was comfort, thank goodness, although our bedclothes were not changed in the entire time we stayed. Glasses on the desk weren't changed either so we had to rinse them out ourselves. The decor was old, stained and faded. Nothing like the photos on the website. The car park is a total rip off at 4£ a day seeing as the parking across the road is free for 24hours. This hotel needs a complete make over and is by no means a 4 star.

    3
    « Great location »

This hotel is in a great location almost central in Douglas Bay so great views in sea facing rooms. Billed as four star but is now rather tired and is probably no more than 3 star really. Breakfast is buffet style and the restaurant can get busy at peak times so guests have to eat in the bar area, food quality at breakfast is reasonable. I stayed in a de luxe sea facing room which is larger than normal rooms but can be quite expensive, so not sure if worth the extra cost. The room is well serviced by the housekeeping staff and bottled water is provided. The room does have free wifi connection which is very good and there is free wifi in the public areas. Irritatingly, the hotel has started to charge for car parking, £4 per day or £15 for five days. Taxis are readily available from the hotel via a phone in reception and the cost is around £5 to either end of the bay. Overall, the hotel is convenient and is a reasonable place to stay if you are in Douglas for a few days. There is a leisure club at the hotel but I did not make use of it during my stay.

« Fantastic staff and lovely view in comfortable double room »

The staff went out of their way to help with any request. Clean tidy and comfortable room with a lovely view. Good food and quiet location, Bar and restaurant facilities excellent. Many Thanks Kathy and Dave

« Another great stay at the Palace Hotel, Douglas, Isle of Man »

Although the hotel is rather dated it is very clean and the staff are very friendly and professional. We have stayed here before and have always had good service. The car park is not free any more but well worth the price of #4 per day or #15 for five days.

    « Best Western Douglas I.O.M. »

One of the very few sea front hotels that has a car park - maybe the only one. The reception, bar and restaurant areas are very well maintained but the bedrooms would benefit from a complete makeover, the bathroom should also be modernised at the same time. The night before my arrival I stayed in a Crowne Plaza (Liverpool City Centre), this hotel could learn a lot about room quality from them. All the staff I came in to contact with were fantastic, all of them being friendly but professional at the same time. The bar meals I had were good, very well presented and plenty of food on the plate at very good prices. I've stayed several times at this hotel before and will use them again.

    « Convenient hotel »

Comfortable hotel on Douglas Promenade convenient for town and visiting rest of island. Only let down is that the hotel now charges for parking in their car park (£4 per day) but ample free parking on promenade when we were there. Staff helpful and friendly.

« Good standard chain hotel, food and service good. »

It's the far end of the prom, so could make use of horse tram rather than walk. If more than a couple of you then a taxi would be worth catching. Good 20min walk. A benidorm look rather than a Victorian frontage like others. A typical chain hotel in terms of facilities etc. Had double room on third floor (not sea view). Nice and clean. Firm mattress and flimsy pillows (would request extra!) Rooms can be adjoining so has a locked door between rooms, but this means noise carries betweens rooms easily. No air con and window only opens a small amount, so gets warm - would be uncomfortable on sunny day. Complex has leisure club and casino on site (both free to use). The leisure club can be accessed down the far end of each hallway. The restaurant is a good size and well presented. Worth booking a window table. Carvery offering mainly, but do somethings fresh. Our food was very nice with good ingredients. Breakfast was standard fayre, but all nice. Manx kippers available on request - wife got these and really enjoyed. Service was quick and attentive. Due to it being a larger hotel with the club and casino, will get some crowds. They spill out or return to their rooms in the early hours and are noisy.

A lovely hotel the staff were very friendly and helpful.had a great sea view. Food was excellent.rooms were cleaned to a high standard. Very good for buses and the horse drawn tram. I would recommed it to my friends.

« an average hotel with superb staff »

good breakfast, handy car park at £4 day, comfy bed, but tiny room for two with no space for ANY suitcases, small wadrobe, probably ok overnight but restricting on our 4 night stay. Clean with superb staff - friendly & efficient. very hot at night & noisy if window open [all night casino etc !!!] We'd stay again if we had to, but not for longer stay, HOWEVER, there ARE Balcony rooms which MAY be better, were not offerred so don't know. a slightly dated confused sort of building.

« Demolition Is Long Overdue »

Opened in the mid 1960s this hotel, like much of the Isle of Man, is stuck in a time warp. While that may be charming and acceptable as regards certain historic tourist attractions on the island such as those operated by Manx National Heritage, or else perhaps the Victorian Steam Railway, or the Manx Electric Railway, this is not the case with the Palace Hotel. Tired, worn out, and extremely dated sums it up. Admittedly, the young staff do their best to present a positive image (and are probably told to do so) but the whole complex is living on borrowed time. I suspect that it continues to attract guests only because quite frankly there is nowhere else of a comparable and similar size in Douglas. Several of the nearby large hotels - the Imperial and the Castle Mona have closed - are derelict, and falling into decay. The location of the Palace, overlooking Douglas Bay, sells it, but only of course if you have a room at the front. Unfortunately, we had a room at the rear, as a result of which on two of the four nights we were there we were kept awake by noisy extractor units from the kitchen, a rowdy wedding party, cars exiting the car park at the rear (which accommodates those staying at the hotel and the cinema) and for which you have to pay and then on the second night by those who had been using the Casino. On that second night, when we were woken up yet again by a disturbance, I went downstairs in the early morning to be confronted by two drunks in the foyer (unmanned). While the hotel did then move us to another room, by the open admission of one of the managers, who will remain nameless to save his/her position, security (in the hands of a private firm) is non-existent. Then there are the early morning deliveries to the rear of the hotel and the collection of waste to contend with ... Both the bedrooms we occupied were cramped, small, and neither was air conditioned. The breakfast was fine but served by east Europeans whose training and command of English was extremely limited. Akin to Manuel out of Fawlty Towers, by which I mean that if you did not hold onto your cutlery and crockery it was whisked away. Asking for two teabags in a pot of tea produced two teapots with one teabag in each. The only evening meal we had there was a bar meal and was absolutely appalling; microwaved food at its worst. I suggest you find somewhere else for an evening meal - the restaurant may have been a better option but don't count on it. While we received a slight reduction in our bill, it was in no way adequate compensation for the problems we encountered. I suggest that people consider very carefully before staying here and, if there is an alternative option, then that might be the better course to pursue.

    « Very nice stay »

Really enjoyed my stay here, the hotel had its own swimming pool and gym (more of a fitness gym than weights gym) It also had a casino which was open till 4am which can get a few locals in too, and it had all you would expect it to have in it. It has a couple of restaurants i only ate in the Chinese one which was very nice - would recommend. We booked a double sea view room, and it was worth the little difference. The beds were very comfortable and the room its self was nice and very clean. I seen comments complaining saying its a tired hotel, I really don't know what people expect yes the decor in the corridors may be a little old dated but its clean and the rooms seemed fine to me. Would stay again

« Fantastic view, fantastic service, fantastic staff and fantastic breakfast »

I was lucky enough to be allocated room 302, with one of the most exceptional views that you can ask for. The room was spacious, very clean and amply stocked with bathroom extras, complimentary drinks, towels and everything you needed. The breakfast in the morning was brilliant, with friendly helpful staff - definitely will revisit. Even got given a free voucher for the casino. I never used it, but a nice gesture

    « Great weekend break »

Booked the Palace for a weekend away with a large group of friends due to the convenient location & range of facilities within the hotel - our group made god use of the hotel bars, casino and gym. On arrival Stevens was patient with our rowdy group. All of the rooms were clean and comfortable, however the positioning of the hairdryer behind the TV isn't practical. Mix of pricing on soft drinks during the day & dressing a plate of kippers with a strawberry was a bit odd. That said I'd recommend and would stay again.

    « 70th birthday event on the Isle of Man 16th - 19th June 2016 »

A very good choice of hotel with good service, extremely helpful and friendly staff in all cases and a room with a sea view as requested. Ideally situated for access to Douglas and other parts of the Island using public transport, we were very pleased with the experience. The receptionist on our last day "went the extra mile" when our flight back to Gatwick was cancelled and we had to seek an alternative (boat to Liverpool/train to London). She lived up to the expression that "nothing was too much trouble" and ensured that an excellent stay/birthday event was not ruined by a flight cancellation/seat shortage until the Wednesday that followed!!

« 1 night at the TT races »

Booked this hotel at the last minute for 1 night at the TT races and was not disappointed it was situated ideally , and the rooms were clean and tidy with a nice breakfast to start the day off with ,the staff were helpful and this hotel has the only casino on the island if your that way inclined

    3
    « Long Weekend Break »

The room on the 4th floor at the back was clean and tidy. When we arrived we had to wait over 2 hours to access the room at 4:00pm. We knew that would potentially be the case, but we would have thought that with the ferry from Liverpool scheduled to arrive in Douglas before 2:00pm they would arrange to have rooms ready by then. We were not the only guests to make their way directly from the ferry to the hotel to be frustrated. We like to sleep with the window open, and that exposed us to the noise of air conditioning units which isn't too bad as it is constant. On Saturday morning I was disturbed at 3:15am by people leaving the hotel making a lot of noise whilst waiting for and getting into taxis. The disturbances continued for over 2 hours.

« Isle of Man visit »

Enjoyed the experience, looking forward to the next visit. We had booked two interconnecting rooms, but upon arrival we had been allocated separate ones. They were not able to reallocate us for two nights, but they did then move us to ajdoining rooms

    4
« professional and caring staff »

We found the hotel staff to be honest, caring and the best we have experienced for some time. They were always there to go out of their way to help you. Centrally located you were not too far away from anywhere. We learnt a lot about the Isle of Man from the staff and they were good ambassadors for the hotel and the people of the Isle of Man. We want to go back

    3
« Ex Hilton and still average »

Well this hotel has changed hands twice since it was a Hilton. I like change when somethings change but this hotel really does seem to be stuck in a 80/90s time warp. The rooms are ok really could do with modernising to adapt to the modern traveller. The casino is average but as I don't gamble I just had a walk around to see if it had changed and was surprised by fact that it didn't look any different to 2002 The restaurant and bar have sea views and well that's a good thing as you wait and wait ages for you food to arrive and its alright not Jamie Oliver standard but it's passible. There is a another note to add try and get a sea facing room as the rooms at the back over look a car park and cinema which can be very noisy at weekends

    3
« Good Sea View - Tired Hotel »

The building is concrete box construction with flat roofs (that leak - buckets in reception). It's tired and in need of a complete refurbishment. The carpets are old, dark and worn. The room we had had a large crack in the ceiling and sagging coving. The best thing about the place is the staff who are warm and helpful. They definitely improved the experience. And our room overlooked the bay which was a positive. This was a last minute booking, without much research, but I won't hurry back until it has some money spent on it.

    3
« Good location, great staff, average everything else »

Booked last minute for one night at the TT 2016. The location is great, just a 5-10 minute walk into central douglas. The staff are very friendly and accommodating. We had bed and breakfast but had to go out for breakfast because at 9.25am (breakfast is advertised as 7 - 10) there was literally no-one on the breakfast room, no guests or staff or even any sign of breakfast! The room was small but functional. The beds in 432 were horrendous - you can feel all the springs and if I wasn't so shattered because I'd not slept in 36 hours I wouldn't have slept at all. The cleaner or someone also came into our room at 5.50am!! Lots of tea, coffee and hot chocolate and the price we paid was ok for TT week too.

    2
« Living in the past »

We stayed for a week during TT. The hotel states it is a 4 star hotel this may have been the case 20 years ago. Luckily we had an ocean view room as it was hot and could capitilise on the sea breeze to cool the room however noise is an issue more so during TT. View would be grand if the inside of the double glazed windows was clean. No A/C no ceiling fans no fridge in room and hotels ice machine broken. If you need ice Sir you can go to Tesco like we do. Room only had a double bed. Night Club open until 3am andusic penetrates rooms even on the 4th floor. Really needs to get with the times

« Great staff, hotel ready for a facelift »

Stayed for the 2016 TT with Sportsnet. Staff were wonderful. Breakfast was 'yum'. Building is a little tired but our room was clean & did the job. Unfortunately we experienced the hottest week for 20 years so better ventilation would have been appreciated in our room (overlooking the carpark) - thankfully the staff 'borrowed' fans from the balcony rooms for us. Looking forward to hearing of an upgrade.

    3
« Friendly service, with an OK room »

We didn't take in the hotel facilities, as we had a late check-in and an early start. The night manager was super-friendly and happy to help us book a taxi for the airport transfer in the morning. The hotel room itself, was clean and it was nice to have conditioner as well as shampoo and shower gel provided in the bathroom. The room was a little hot - there is no air conditioning - but despite the window being open, I had a quite night.

« Excellent value and wonderful staff »

Thank you to all at the Palace for yet another fabulous stay! The initial reason for my trip this time was to take my Father's ashes over to the Island and scatter them with Mum's. However I stayed for 5 days and travelled around a fair bit largely due to the location with bus and tram stops outside the hotel. It won't be long before I'm back as I'll be checking out the Winter deals once again which are amazing value!

    3
« Location good quite central but in need of modernisation generally but very clean. »

Stayed for five nights. Room to stuffy. Hard to regulate heat in shower. Staff in restaurant seemed to have trouble understanding when we wanted to order something from their specials menu. Swimming pool great. . We didn't use Casino or night club so can't say what they are like.

    4
« Good location, good breakfast but needs a facelift! »

We picked the Best Western as the location was good and the price was good too compared to other hotels, this was the only chain hotel in the area also. Parking is free on the street outside - just move your vehicle within 24 hours and its free again!. The hotel itself needs a bit of clean up and paint job - you'll see the old Hilton paintwork around. Some of the hallways needed a good clean and the carpets in the room were worn and stains on the bottom section of the bed. The lip to the balcony was also worn/broken but its not the worse hotel I've stayed in by far and we don't go away to stay in the room!. Breakfast is great with a large buffet selection and the staff are all polite and friendly. A good hotel to stay in for a weekend break with a leisure centre next door with use included.

We are just at airport after leaving hotel. A lovely hotel with the most comfortable beds. If i could have i would have brought the pillows home. Lovely warm friendly staff especially noah from the resturant. Food was amazing and such an amazing selection. Room was lovely and clean. View was amazing. We will definately be back next year

    « A WEEKEND BREAK »

This Hotel is a perfect setting for the beach trams and the shops. It has a night club opens midnight till 5am, casino and bingo. We had bed breakfast and evening meal which was a carvery. You different choices each night. there was a vegetarian choice as well as a roast and a fish dish. We could not fault the food. The pool was lovely and warm. The receptionist was friendly and welcoming. All the restaurant were friendly and efficient. Will go back.

    « A Good hotel »

A good hotel to stay at, staff were certainly helpful all the way through. Good size car park, if a little expensive for residents. Rooms were very comfortable but could do with refurbishing, some units a bit worn but generally ok, still all useable. Restaurant and bar area is very good and the breakfast is excellent. Right on the front so a sea view room really means sea view!

    « Short break »

I have stayed at this hotel about eight years years ago. I was not really impressed the last time I stayed. However this time was so much better. I can not fault the staff all very friendly and helpful. The lovely reception team were very welcoming and check in was swift and delivered with a smile . The room 449 was bright with a king size bed and had a sea view the bathroom was a little on the compact size but perfectly functional and clean with a selection of toiletries. The restaurant served an excellent breakfast and a carvery supper with a few cook to order options all the restaurant / bar staff were very helpful however a special mention has to go to Laura a little Yorkshire pocket rocket she went above and beyond to provide great customer service and nothing was to much trouble for her. Always smiling and happy to help a real credit to the company. All in all a good hotel not the Ritz but great value and very good service and very near to ferry links

« A bit of glamour in an old fashioned resort »

A good reasonably priced hotel for a long weekend out of main season. The hotel is situated opposite the beach a little distance from the main shopping centre of Douglas in the Laxey direction. I was with a group on a two night weekend stay in early May 2016. We were able to upgrade to sea facing rooms for £10 per night. In the main season I believe it costs an extra £25 per night. My room was a good size and clean. The breakfast was the usual buffet style and with a selection of good quality choices of English and continental food. On the first night a few of us had the house fish and chips in the bar area. Unfortunately not the best I have had. The hotel was busy with wedding and hen parties but the caused no problems. The hotel has a casino that is open until 0500 on Saturdays. A bit of glamour in what feels like a 1950 resort. I enjoyed my stay and would stop here again. The receptionist 'Stevens' was particularly helpful and plotted a tour of the island for us on public transport.

    « Amazing holiday »

I have just been on my first holiday on my own, I love the Isle of Man and as I was traveling on a coach trip this was the designated hotel, I read trip advisor before I went.i was not disappointed, our party were given a dining room to ourselves with tables seating 10 people there were many couples and some singles me being the only single female I enjoyed being on a table with so many people to talk to and every body joined in with the conversations so well done for that. All the staff were really helpful, nothing was any trouble for them, they were all so friendly. My room was a spacious double room was cleaned every day, and with fresh towels also All public areas were clean and areas well signposted so no one could get lost. I would recommend this hotel to anyone. Thank you to all the staff.

    « Don't get a room overlooking car park »

Stayed here for one night on business in Douglas and stayed in a room that overlooks the car park. Hardly slept as there is a bank of extraction fans to the first floor level roof that are very noisy and not turned off till 11pm, they then spark up again in preparation for breakfast. When they turn off at night the peace is then broken by death rattle taxis waiting at reception to pick up casino guests that leave there engines running, had to contact reception to get them to switch off, if you like to sleep with window open don't pick this hotel, having said that rooms are reasonably comfortable and food just ok in restaurant but look at other options before selecting this hotel.

    « Shocking... literally! »

Having stayed at the hotel this week, and thinking back to an event that happened on the first morning that I will put in writing formally to the hotel, guests should be aware of the seemingly lax electrical safety standards at this place. The short of it: got a 240v shock off the iron - not a nice experience - the results of a frayed mains cable touching the metal surround of the ironing board switching unit (one of those designs that would be outlawed today). Having reported it I thought it would be fixed but no, same one in the cupboard on return so I questioned this with the maintenance guy who happened to be in reception. He told me he PAT tested it (no stickers anywhere in the room) and then came up to see it for himself.. showed him the frayed wires. PAT testing includes a visual check - obviously not in this case. Then I was told the room and corridor was protected by RCD. Really - well that worked didn't it. You might be thinking this isn't that serious, but when you get a mains shock, you'd expect it to trigger some type of response or action that in this case seems to have failed completely and therefore I'd question the standards of maintenance at this hotel. When you're a guest in a hotel you expect maintenance and management to take responsibility and I will certainly give management a chance to reply and will share the photo taken of the flex with them and precisely what conversations took place. But in the meantime, please take care; just a few checks as it could have quite easily been a different outcome for me!

Very nice hotel if you have a seaview with excellent staff and facilities.Food was above average. The only down side was you have to pay in the car park which seems a bit strange. The walk to town was 15 mins and enjoyable.Ideal base for touring the island

    « Customer Service »

I visit the island regularly on business and don't spend much time in any hotel, but whilst there I do appreciate some homely comfort. The view from the restaurant is exceptional but the menu could offer a broader selection. The room I had was adequate. Service front of house provided by Stevens was excellent.

    « Oh Dear what a Dump »

Room was very small and bathroom well past its best much like the rest of the hotel. Frankly from whatever angle you look at this hotel it is an architectural eyesore. The room price was poor value. Breakfast and coffee very disappointing.

« Isle of Man stay »

Hotel is very nice a bit dated horrible shower curtain. Could have done with another comfy chair in the room. One of the windows had blown so it looked tatty. Breakfast was excellent. Service in restaurant and bar was slow. Lovely sea view.

« Good location and stay but needs some updating »

We stayed here for 4 nights at the beginning of March 2016. We chose this hotel because it was a Best Western and also for the facilities it offered. When we booked we were aware the décor would be a little tired. We arrived early afternoon and were told the room would not be ready for a few hours. I asked was there any chance we could have it earlier and we were asked to go and wait in the bar. 10 minutes later it was ready which was good news for us! We were given a room that overlooked the car park. The room was ok, but it was very tired looking and this does need to be addressed. The hotel did not appear to be full and as it was my birthday the day we checked in I was a little disappointed not to be allocated a sea view room. While we stayed at the hotel we used the pool, bingo and the casino. All were very good. The breakfast at the hotel was lovely and the staff were wonderful and really friendly. During our stay in the Isle of Man we enjoyed a trip to Peel for the ice cream, a ride on the steam train and a visit to the Manx Museum. Some things were closed due to the time of year so we would definitely return in the summer next time. We possibly would stay at the hotel again but if some improvements had been made.

    « Never again »

Website is poor on the booking in, prices are over priced in comparison to the hotels on the island, dirty, the reception and bar staff were lovely the lack of management is poor, rooms are small even on the deluxe level dated and the sea views are some what ruined by the forefront of the flat roof in some of the rooms, access to the rooms is poor and the hotel in general is very dated also having a car park is a good thing except you as a guest have to pay to use it. I for one will not be staying in that hotel again.

« Pleasant visit to Palace hotel & Casino, Isle of Man »

My partner & I stayed here for a holiday for 5 days at start of March/ beginning of April 2015. We found our seafront balcony room to be very comfortable, with good amenities. The restaurant was spacious and pleasant with good quality food and the bar was very comfortable and relaxing. Overall we found the staff to be helpful, pleasant and attentive. The swimming pool was an added bonus which we made use of most mornings during our stay. We will definitely look at staying here again when we return to the Isle of Man for another holiday.

« Short Break at the Casino »

We stayed here for a short break whilst we visited family in the IOM from 09/04 til 12/04 and we had an enjoyable stay in this hotel, the room was a double with sea view and it was excellent, the staff were very obliging and friendly, the food was good, the pool and fitness suites were included in price and facilities were good and I would certainly recommend the hotel to anyone looking for a stay in Douglas, only negatives were the drink prices around £4 a pint! and the common areas were a bit tired, avoid rooms at the rear of the hotel as they overlook car park and have extractor fans from kitchens etc (noisey).

Staff and food great. Yes, hotel looking a bit dated but my wife and I love staying here. Hotel has great facilities and is in the perfect position. Looking a bit jaded but we have no interest in staying elsewhere.

« Quality of a chain hotel but with a personal service »

I recently stayed in this hotel for 1 night on a business trip. All staff were extremely helpful, pleasant and polite. The hotel had all the facilities that you would expect and which would only really be possible with a large chain, but the service was of the high calibre you would normally associate with a smaller independent/family run hotel. Special thanks to Irene for finding and recovering my iPhone charger which I had left behind.

« A great all round hotel with value for money and exemplary staff »

My family and I stayed here for 3 nights whilst touring IOM early April 16. The staff arranged our four rooms close together and couldn't offer any more support, from extra towels, support with rooms and even arranged a birthday cake for a 30th birthday. The manager Mark Turton there & his colleagues are a credit to the chain. The food quality & quantity was excellent as well as very relaxing bar area. The barman advised us on locations that we were searching for and his advice was spot on.

« Great location with excellent service »

Stayed with my husband who was on business. Had a sea view room on the 3rd floor. Lovely view and all you would expect for comfort. We ate in the restaurant on the first evening and I asked about gluten free options as I am coeliac. Staff were very helpful, checking with the kitchen staff to ensure the information I received was correct. I had tuna steak served with vegetable on a bed of noodles. The noodles were substituted with rice noodles ensuring a gf meal. Panna cotta served with strawberry sauce completed my very enjoyable meal. My confidence was raised further regarding staff awareness of gf food when the chef came to the table during the meal to ensure everything was satisfactory. The following morning, gf toast was provided at my request and bacon brought directly to me from the kitchen to ensure there was no cross contamination with sausages or bread on the buffet. The gym steam room and swimming pool were all very good with spotless facilities and changing rooms. Sadly the jacuzzi was not working but didn't spoil my enjoyment. Good location, within walking distance to the electric train and into the town centre. Cinema is just behind the hotel. All in all an enjoyable stay, very helpful and friendly staff. Would definately go back.

    « Great location - basic hotel »

This has a great location right on the front with excellent views out on to the sea at the front of the hotel. It has parking at the rear also. Casino and restaurants on site also. The good is a good standard. The rooms are a little small and in my view in need of updating.

« Great Hotel with Excellent Service & Staff »

The hotel provides you with every amenity possible combined with very friendly and helpful staff. The food is also very impressive with a wide selection, highly recommend the breakfast. Sea view rooms are highly recommended Overall thank you to all the staff at the Palace Hotel.

« Absolutely discussing, look at pictures »

FILTHY ROOM but the worst by far was the gym. This is a separate room underneath the leisure club. Rusty equipment, mold on the ceiling and walls. Absolutely filthy. Hotel smells old and musty. Book somewhere else.

    « Shame! »

I was really hoping this time Best Western Hotels could have gotten things right, shame is was Not the case for the following reasons: 1. Despite being in email conversation with Bw Business Accounts, my reservation was never booked or at the rate discussed 2. On arrival, after waiting at reception desk for about 12 mins, another guest went and tried to find a staff member for me 3. No booking was made and they weren't expecting me, but did offer me a room at a much bigger rate 4. Staff didn't or wouldn't charge my room to my best Western business card, and refused my American Express credit card, so had to use debit card in end (what's the point of having membership you ask?) 5. No room service menu in room, so had to go order in restaurant instead then was expected to pay instead of it being added to my account 6. Toilet flush in room 305 didn't work properly 7. I reported all of this on their feedback cards which I left at reception when checking out 8. Was billed £4.25 for 2 international calls that did not connect or go through, just rang, nobody answered the other end I have since complained to Best Western and refused to pay their bigger bill than I was expecting and have asked them to close my business account down, as we feel strongly about customer service quality.

    « Lovely overnight break »

We stayed at the Palace for my husband's birthday. Unfortunately, as it was Easter Saturday, the special offers didn't apply, but we thoroughly enjoyed our overnight stay. Dinner was excellent, with particularly good quality starters. A couple of hours in the Casino, with a 'break even' result, was brilliant. Breakfast at the Palace was perfect, as it always is. Good quality food, cooked well, with lots of choice, made for a good start to our day. Check out at 12 noon meant that we were able to have a bracing walk along the prom. Even though we live only11 miles away, we felt that we had had a lovely break! The rooms may be a little tired but no problems at all. Great stay.

« Decent lodging short walk from city centre »

Hotel is a bit old but has all the amenities. Room was a decent size with good beds, heating control. Nice Samsung SmartTV with a USB port which was really handy. Spacious bathroom, lots of towels. Hotel is about a 10 minute walk to the Promenade, the pedestrian-only street that counts as Douglas' city centre. Handily enough there is a Spar (convenience store) right beside the hotel.

« improvement of the restaurant since last stay »

This was my ninth visit and i must say the restaurant has improved. A better selection of cold starter including local smoked salmon. seemed to be varied selection of carvery meals. had steak and cooked to perfection. Some staff changed and service appears better. Rooms still need a bit of a refurb as do common areas. car parking fees are charged to guests which is an nunusual practice,,, Will probably be staying again.

    « Good stay »

Good place to stay with plenty of parking and good wi-fi. Also great pool and sauna. Excellent breakfast and bars. Only downside was bedroom. The windows were dirty on outside diminishing the view, no towels for the last day and not any top up of the milk and sugar for tea and coffee. These things were not enough of a problem to spoil an excellent holiday.

    « Needs updating »

Looking past its sell by date it needs a good makeover - rather difficult to do to a 1960s type building. Bed past its best. TV pixelated most of the time on the BBC channels not sure if weather related or "normal". Breakfast good both in terms of quality and quantity. Beer prices a bit steep its worth a five minute walk down the prom towards Onchan to The Queens. Food excellent and beer prices very acceptable.

« Bit dated but service fantastic »

I have just recently spent 2 nights here with my husband... We checked in and where given a sea view room which smelt really bad of smoke, we reported it to house keeping and within 5 minutes she had called reception and got us moved right away, they are non smoking rooms but obviously the last guest didn't adhere to that! Rooms in need of upgrading but very clean and fantastic views with a huge patio door onto a small balcony... Perfect. Stevens checked us in, what a great guy so helpful and cheerful. Breakfast was really good and we also eat in the restaurant one eve for dinner which was also very good £21.95 I think it was for 2 courses, lots of fish to start which was beautiful and 4 or 5 mains to choose from, plus about 6 different desserts if u wished for an extra amount. All in all a pleasant stay, I will be returning for business

    3
    « Looking tired! »

The staff were generally very helpful from the start, making sure I had ticketed my car to ensure I didn't get a fine from the car park operator then quickly finding me a new room when I discovered the first one I was allocated was located near noisy air conditioning units at the back of the hotel. Breakfast was very good with a buffet and a great choice of cooked kippers, poached eggs etc from the menu. At 70 pounds a night including breakfast the hotel was good value (Out of season - March) but needs a good revamp as it is beginning to look quite tired. The bedrooms in particular, for example the mattress on the bed was far too soft for me and I rolled around it as if I was on a water bed, plus the bed itself creaked with every move making for an uncomfortable and disturbed sleep. The window latch was faulty and the bathroom had a well-used look and feel. Everything was clean just looking tired. I probably won't return and would not book it for a business event as it just isn't smart enough. Suggestions if you do book, go for a high room with a sea view as certain rooms at rear overlook the air conditioning system and they are noisy. But be aware this was an out of season stay so the Promenade might get noisy during summer months. Alternatively look at the Claremont Hotel, some of my group stayed there and though more expensive the Claremont is very conformtable and definitely a cut above.

    « Palace casino »

Hotel is now looking very tired and dated. I thought Small baths with shower curtains with bath mats were a thing of the past, but every room has one. There's a great deal of noise from outside in the early hours on a Friday and Saturday night because of punters leaving the casino (4-5am) so would not advise light sleepers to book. Great breakfast as you can fill your plate with a huge range of food, but this is the hotels only plus.

    4
    « Clean and tidy. »

My partner and I stayed at the Palace hotel during February for a weekend, it's not the most glamorous place to stay in Douglas, but it was good value. The hotel is above the casino, which consists of the casino itself, a Chinese restaurant and a night club. There is also a more formal restaurant on the ground floor and a nice health club on the first floor, which looks out over the bay. Our room was quite large with a,lovely view of the beach, and the house keeping staff did a great job of cleaning each morning. The staff at the hotel were very helpful and friendly, so although the hotel is a bit dated, we enjoyed our stay. Clean, tidy and good value for money.

« Food and service reasonable. The Hotel is better than it looks »

The hotel was built on the site of a victorian Lido and ballroom. There are old photos on the walls of what looked like a magnificent palatial building. This was knocked down many years ago and the current ugly 1970s concrete and brick office block style Hotel was built on the derelict site. There are still remains of the old structure in what is now the car park. Suffice to say this is not a very attractive building at all and I know from speaking to the locals that some of them consider it an eyesore. It does have sea views from the front, slightly spoilt by the fact that you are looking across a large expanse of flat, felt covered roof. The Hotel is a Casino and you get a £5 inducement to visit the Casino area. I am not a gambler and have avoided this area. There are independant restaurants and a nightclub inside, too. I have only stayed here during the week and they are always shut. I have seen advertisments for entertainment on Fridays and Saturdays "live band from midnight to 3am". I suspect the place is very different on Friday and Saturday nights and personally I will avoid it if I ever need to stay here over the Weekend. During the week it is like a quiet, sleepy, business travellers motel, which is what I want. Good points are: It is a bit nicer inside than out. The rooms are clean, some are quite big (Deluxe rooms have big beds and cumfy chairs). It has a free car park - this is a big advantage as parking on the promenade can be challenging. It is quiet during the week, I usually sleep well. It has free cash machines and bottled water and a safe for valuables. The breakfast is buffet style but with table service for tea/coffee and special order items. Service and food are quite reasonable. I haven't eaten in the resturant, yet. They do room service. Rooms are quite cheap off season, too. I wouldn't take the wife here for a holiday, but quite a reasonable choice if you are a business traveller, despite it's "Casino / nightclub" alter ego.

« Nice hotel but nothing special »

Good central location. Room was clean and comfortable, hotel itself was reasonably good. Staff were friendly. Used the health club which was small and very dated with hardly any equipment. The pool was ok. Evening meal was a bit confusing as to what was on offer. Eventually settled on a bar meal which was good for what it was. The only problem was, I put £50 on my room account but everytime I wanted something, I wasn't on the system, so it became pointless. Breakfast was a buffet style affair, had everything you would want and checkout was 12noon. Please be aware that you are meant to pay for parking ( which I find absurd if you are a hotel guest). I refuse to pay for parking on private land especially if I'm paying to use the facilities, subsequently got a ticket which went straight in the bin. It basically warned me not to do it again or I'll get clamped. Maybe the hotel could issue permits for the duration of a person's stay, thus avoiding any bad feelings ? To conclude, it's not a bad hotel, couldn't really fault it but not somewhere to stay if you want something a bit special.

    4
    « Clean, but dated »

This feels like an older hotel that could do with a bit of a spruce. However, I have no complaints about the hotel. The rooms were clean and the beds were comfy. The dinner and breakfast options were varied and did the job. The staff are friendly and helpful. Just a bit of an average hotel but it completely does the job you need it to (clean, comfortable and central location).

    5
    « Valentine's weekend »

Lovely weekend, room was lovely, food was really nice - calvary type set up so no long waits and good selection! Staff were really friendly (mainly Stephen who didn't tell me to write this in hope of a promotion ??)! All in all good weekend and good price ??

    « Give a wide berth »

Stevens on reception was friendly and welcoming. Antonio and Zofia in restaurant were a credit. That's the good points of the hotel. As a Best Western hotel it was a big disappointment, very tired hotel. Stayed in room 237 and all Saturday afternoon the electricity was off (Turned out only 235 and 237 were affected) The staff were not really interested offered to move to an inferior room or another hotel without sea view. They moved the couple from room 235 which took care of the electric problem. Car parking is £4 for 24 hours or you can park opposite for free. The fitness centre the ladies sauna was out of action and the whirlpool was not working on the Monday morning. The Best Western should send an inspector to this hotel as it is not worthy of the Best Western name, I have decided to not use the Best Western chain on my next trip to Berlin as don't really want to have to stay four days in a hotel like this, the only reason i have given it an average is the staff. Looking at the reviews on here the reply is nearly always the same, the management it seems can't be bothered to even take time to give an individual a reply.

    « Great place »

Well placed, great facilities, quirky, great staff. The car park is pay and display, and payment is not bad, something like £2.00 for 24hrs. The on site Cinema is just brilliant, not to mention the Casino. We even had a free £5.00 bet as part of the booking in at reception.

« Great location, lovely eatery and beautiful view of the waterfront from our room »

A lovely place to stay that I would recommend to anyone wanting to stay somewhere central with a nice view. We also had a lunch buffet at the hotel which was great food and more than I could manage in one sitting!

« Majestic restaurant in the casino »

Food was very hit and miss allot of the party was very disappointed with their food some even not eating as it was inedible. Service was terrible. Drinks orders were not taken, only after a very long wait. If your in a party of more than 8 dont expect to sit at the same table, they dont have the option. Not going back.

    3
    « Average hotel from the 80s »

The palace is your run of the mill hotel, decor from the 80s, food from the 80s, prices from today. Hotel room prices are ok and the rooms themselves are clear and decent but the rest of the place is uninspiring. If you book make sure you get an atrium or see view room as this is one of the plus points of the hotel. It has a casino if you like that sort of thing but don't expect the Monte Carlo sporting club. It's in a good location and has its own car park so overall probably a decent bet to book unless you are looking for something special.

    2
« You get what you pay for »

Stayed here for work, it was disappointing in terms the quality of rooms. I wouldn't recommend it and would search some of the other hotels in the area that I've now stayed in (for work) in the same price range.

    « New Year's Eve Black tie dinner & night's stay :-) »

We had another great night here for New Year's Eve. Amazing food, always so tasty and well prepared. Great staff - very attentive & friendly. Excellent value for money for the package we received. Really good entertainment, that night we had "The Rat Pack" very enjoyable. My mum & dad were very happy to find surprise mini bottles of wine in their room for their anniversary, great touch. Thank you.

« Accommodation slightly tired but exceptional food »

First impression the hotel had a food smell about it. Decor seems to be stuck in the early 80's. The food though wow like really, had sirloin steak two nights on the run and it is by far the best steak I've ever had, partner agreed with me. With the exception of the foreign waiter who didn't understand medium rare with Diane sauce and I had to write our order myself... Quality of food made up for that little mishap... Would recommend this hotel! Reception staff were attentive and lovely too.

    « Overnight stay »

Stayed overnight at this hotel for a retirement celebration with my husband. The experience was excellent with efficiency and quality from the staff the food the cleanliness and the facilities provided . We had a bar meal in the Paragon which was possibly one of the best steaks we have consumed in all our travels - really good to find this on home ground. Breakfast was of equal quality . I would definitely recommend this hotel particularly for it's value for money and overal quality .

    « Worst Western »

I booked 5 rooms for 2 nights at a cost of over £1,000. I received 2 rooms where the window would not close, 1 room that had a major leak, 1 room with black mould in the bathroom and 1 ok room. I was told by a totally unhelpful duty manager "Ian" (wouldn't give me his surname) that I'd agreed to a £20 refund - which I hadn't. The health club is a health hazard, the roof over the pool is flaking and ceiling tiles are peeling away. Breakfast is sadly lacking in 2 areas - taste and temperature, unless you like burned toast that is. I'll upload some photos from my stay soon and let you make up your own minds. The only redeeming feature is that the bar staff try to help. In the spirit of Best Western 'protocol' I won't attribute a name to the following comment from an employee.... "sorry sir, it does sometimes get embarrassing to work here". So, let's then move on to the final part of this review and one which I hope that "Ian" reads.... And that is their approach to late checkouts. Due to the homeward ferry being delayed, we requested a late checkout. We did this as soon as we heard of the delay. We were assured by the receptionist at the time that this was OK, but they charge £15 per room for a late checkout. We were advised to speak with the receptionist later the same day to confirm. After dinner, we returned to the reception to be told it wasn't possible to get a late checkout. We then asked for just a couple of rooms. The delightful Ian, told us with a wide smile that they could do 2 rooms for £45 each. So, in the afternoon when we first asked it would have been £75 for 5 rooms. Yet as soon as we went to confirm, the price was suddenly £90 for 2 rooms. When I asked why, I was informed that the rooms might get booked. Their website was showing good availability and given that the ferries were disrupted at its 11pm as this is all happening, then I can only assume that it is rampant profiteering by "Ian" and Best Western. What was supposed to be a pleasant start to the New Year was ruined by Best Western. The measure of good service is not how a company behaves when things go right, but how they respond when things go wrong. Well it appears that Best Western respond by profiteering. Avoid this hotel until a) The rooms and health club are visited by a competent maintenance person. b) The duty manager learns the basic principles of customer service.

    « New Year »

We booked into the hotel for New Years Eve. The cost was £200 for the night (£70 for other nights) for a deluxe room and breakfast. It also included a black tie dinner and dance. Whilst it may seem a lot for one night I was very impressed with the New Years Eve dinner/dance. The food was excellent. 3 courses all buffet style. The starters consisted of fresh salmon and seafood, meats, fruit, salads etc. Main course was a carvery and a huge selection of sweets. Also included on the tables were wine and champagne. The entertainment was a Rat pack and dancers plus a disco. Breakfast was a typical hotel breakfast. It was excellent value for money. The hotel itself however is looking tired and needs some money spent on it. We had a deluxe room on the 4th floor looking out to sea. The carpets are grubby, bed base not the most clean. The double glazed windows leaked like a sieve and we had to use a towel to stop it rolling off the window sill onto the carpet. The towel was soaked which shows how bad leak was. The bathroom was ok but the shower had little power and the shower head holder was loose. The sink was blocked and water took an age to drain away. The hotel staff were pleasant and polite, maid service good but the staff at the health club were very matter of fact and at time appeared disinterested to the point of being rude. Like the rest of the hotel it looked tired espicially the changing rooms. There are two free (no charges) cash machines on site which is useful. Also on site is the casino which also has a chinese restaurant and bar plus there is a club which is open at weekends. It's a shame about the general appearance of the place but for a new years eve break it was worth it.

« nice stay at ok price »

have to be at work at IOM, I Stay here because I'm a gold member Of BW. Didn't have any upgrade but the room was big and comfortable with sea view. The bed was ok, had tea and biscuits in the room (nice touch).Happy with breakfast Fresh fruit, Cereals and yogurt. had toast and cheese. (for those who are hungry there is full cook breakfast and porridge. Tea and coffee. (included on the room rates). So excellent. There is a Pool, Gym, Bingo, Casino, Nightclub and a Cinema. So very good on that front. Few minutes walk to the city centre for shops, Post office, dozen of Pubs and restaurants. The sea is at the front and also there is a Bus stop (very handy). The bus number 1 from the airport stops there.about £3. The Hotel have a big car park. The hotel needs some refreshment as it looks 70's, with old carpets but its not that terrible.

    3
    « Good...ish but could be great »

There are some good points to this hotel. The food from the bar was very nice. The gym is handy for a quick workout. The pool and spa area is nice and relaxing. The room was always set and cleaned every day with fresh towels. All what you would expect from a big hotel. Unfortunately thats where it ended. The rooms are dated back to the 80s and i need a good chiropractor to set my back after a week in that bed. The shower is also back in the 80s, not great at all, one min its hot and the next it is cold. Coming into the hotel looks nice although there is a smell of dampness at the lifts which is off putting. The highlight of the stay was having to pay £20 to park my car at the hotel for the week...... This hotel could be great, but it needs alot of work. Tbh i would not go back, which is sad to say as i had high hopes when booking u.

    « Nice but dated! »

I have stayed in a number of Best Western hotels and I have to say this one is not one of their flag ships. On arrival we were greeted by helpful and friendly staff, prior to going to the room we had a drink in the bar. Now I have to say the bar is very nice with great views of the sea, a very relaxing place to enjoy a drink. As for the room, I would recommend asked for a sea view, we didn't but its was not a problem. the room was a bit dated and tired, the bathroom was ill designed and the toilet seat was broken and the shower was just a shower head over a bath and did not appear to be that clean. The room was small however if you are only there for two days its fine. The hotel does have leisure facilities and although I did not use them they did look very good. There is also a Casino which is great fun, not to big, just right and it had a great little atmosphere and we went in both nights. The location is about an 8 minutes walk into the centre which is ideal for all the pubs and clubs and only a short distance away in the opposite direction is a great little Chinese restaurant. I will be going back again and I would recommend the hotel to anyone.

    4
« The staff are outstanding! »

I booked in here on the winter offer of 3 course dinner, bed and breakfast for 2 priced at £75 which is brilliant value for money. The hotel is in a great location, although the building itself is dated. my room was spotlessly clean, well laid out and warm. The bathroom was small and the shower could do with being upgraded however that's pretty much all I can find fault with. free wifi with quite good coverage, access to the health club, well stocked tea/coffee facilities in the room, comfy bed, and a decent hairdryer as opposed to the usual crappy ones mostly found in a hotel. Stephen checked me in with a smile, and he is honestly one of the friendliest receptionists I've come across. We ate in the restaurant both nights of my stay and nothing was too much hassle. Justyna, Jose Simon and David were amazing; friendly and always smiling, and ensured we had everything we needed at all times, even though the restaurant was extremely busy on Saturday night. Jose kept our drinks topped up all the time which was very much appreciated! The 3 course carvery meal included in the offer was beautiful with plenty of choices available. A harpist provided background music both nights in the bar area, which makes a lovely change from the offerings of other hotels. Breakfast was great, with a large selection of items to choose from. The service industry in the Isle of Man can leave a lot to be desired, however I had a really good experience at the palace and it's nice to be looked after by people who don't make you feel like you're an inconvenience to them. I would definitely stay here again and recommend it to other people. Ps David needs a day off - he seemed to always be there!

    « Business trip »

Booked a deluxe room, comfy bed and pillows, amazing view out to sea, could hear waves crashing on shore at night. Was given a room with an interconncting door to next room. Really dont think this is appropriate for a female travelling alone. Neighbour snored all night too.. Hotel looked tired, in need of a refurb. Seats in bar area torn and tatty. Breakfast was excellent apart from the tinned fruit. Hotel staff were wonderful. Would stay here again purely for the location.

« Not impressed.....but guess you get what you pay for »

On entering the hotel I was shocked to find that I had to pay and display at a parking machine outside, 2 steps away from the hotels reception. I have traveled around the world stayed in many hotels (some of which were Best Western) and can categorically say I have never been asked to "Pay and Display" in a car park owed by the hotel. When asking if I could not just add it to my room the answer was just no. Imagine more to annoyance that the card reader in the pay and display machine was broken, as was the cash machine in the hotel that the receptionist pointed me too. This coupled by a long journey was very frustrating. Found out later hotel do not turn them on till 9pm, if you are expecting parole to pay and display for parking the this is just stupid. Room, Deluxe? Really? If this is a deluxe room I am in now then I hate to think what the normal rooms are like. The bed is uncomfortable there is not enough power points for a modern world, the decor is poor and the furniture is jaded. One plus point - the Internet is fast. Restaurant, ah actually this is a Buffett Restaurant and should be called a "Buffet Restaurant". This was also poor, 2 courses £17.95....expensive! Selection of cold starters from a small buffet or hot soup. Cold starters were not impressive, pate that looked like it had been sat out for a while, prawns that were not in the chiller just sat on the side of the chiller (obviously avoided these) some cold ham and beef. I had some ham, potato salad and a cucumber salad. Disappointing. Main course consisted of various things from a Hotplate I choose beef stroganoff, which did not have much flavour. Behind the Buffett the wood cladding did not look like it had been cleaned for a while. 2nd night I ate in the bar, this was slightly better, sirloin steak I order rare, the portion was big but the stake was more like blue than rare, but I can eat blue anyway so was not bothered. One plus point from the hotel is the staff, they are friendly and helpful, but Sorry I will be looking elsewhere when I next come to the Isle of Man. To sum it up the entire hotel needs modernisation as a huge amount of investment to bring it into the 21st century. Mr Manager please don't put out your standard reply to this review as you have with others, I quote your brochure in my room "Hotels with Personality".

« Staying in 1970s Isle of Man »

If you like your décor from 70s stay here. I enjoyed the access to the health and fitness centre but it needs a revamp. The whole building needs to get into 21st century to attract a younger crowd. Included breakfast was very good although the items left out on the hot plates do tend to get dry so maybe don't put all the food out at once.

    « Enjoyable stay »

Stayed here recently with my wife and although yes it does need a refurb which everyone can agree with, it was one of the most enjoyable stays I've had in a while. The rooms are clean and comfy and the staff are great, from reception (Lauren was really helpful with any queries or problems we had she was always there answering with a warm smile on her face) to housekeeping (julie such a lovely woman and looked after us while we were there) to the restaurant staff (the irish guy john I think on the bar was great and a easy bloke to chat to, many laughs with him and we enjoyed going down there of a night time) all in all, it may look grim but the staff make that place by warming it up, a really good asset if you ask me. I'll be back soon

    « Never again »

Stayed here for 2 nights on business and I'm sorry to say I will never stay here again. After travelling to the Isle Of Man I arrived only to find that I had to pay for the privilege of parking at the hotel. On questioning this at reception, the receptionist told me that 'we have been told that everyone has to pay'. She summoned the duty manager who said that the rules had come from way above him and that even he had to pay (not that it is any of my concern). The room was small and overlooked the grim car park and I am now recovering from 2 sleepless nights with the uncomfortable bed causing back pain. On the first night I ventured into the bar for a meal and opted for a cheese & pickle toasted sandwich. This was a poor effort of a meal and something you would not expect to find in a supposed 4 star hotel. The night before departure I phoned reception to check what time check out was and on the morning of check out, it looked as if they were going to charge me for this call (that would have been the icing on the cake), they then said the charge had been cleared off but I did sense that they were thinking about charging this. Shame but I will not be returning when I next visit and hope to find somewhere which offers a better experience.

    « Cramped rooms »

Sadly rooms are really small and there's no point in upgrading to a sea view as the windows (I checked three rooms) are all fogged due to poor double glazing. Friendly staff and no complaints about cleanliness. Didn't use the restaurant.

« Nice location, but oh so tired »

A couple of weeks back I dropped my son off for his first term at university, it is safe to say his digs rate above the rather tired state of the Best Westen hotel. The furnishings were of university hall standard, and the bed amongst the most uncomfortable I can remember. As is often the case the politeness and care of the staff was well above the level of the hotel in which they work, bringing the rating all the way up to a 2 star!

    « GOOD FOR A BUSINESS TRIP »

The Best Western is in a great position for getting around Douglas. Our room was neat but very compact to the point of not being comfortable just to relax in. If you are on a business trip and just need a good bed, teapot, and a tub/toilet its okay. The staff were helpful and kind and the food was good in the restaurant. We were not used to the menu structure with prices for 1 course, 2 courses, and 3 courses but we still ate and enjoyed the meals.

« Could be so much better »

Visited IoM for a short break of 3 days and stayed here for convenience. It's in a good location but in serious need of a refurbishment. It has everything that's required but it's dated and exhausted. Entrance poor. Rooms scruffy. Bar ok but doesn't serve local beer for some reason. Restaurant ok if basic. As mentions it could be excellent with some investment. Rooms at front have lovely views. As does the restaurant and bar. Good location as well. Just very tired. Shame really. All staff were very helpful. There's a restaurant called North 16 (I think) short taxi ride away. Highly recommended

    « great stay »

Stayed with my wife in October for three nights, the first morning we were told there might be a problem with the plumbing, left for the day and when we returned was told we had been moved to another room, everything had been carefully taken from one room to the other and a mini bottle of wine each plus water for the inconvenience was on the table for us, this was overseen by Mark who went out of his way to make sure we were happy with the situation. All the staff were very professional and John (from Dublin) made us very welcome in the bar in the evening, my wife wanted a vegetarian dish and he organized a lovely meal for her. Food was excellent and the hotel is just a short stroll to the main town.

« Great Value for money »

Stayed here recently already booked in for another trip in a couple of weeks. Staff are polite, friendly, efficient. Eagerly assisted when I lost my Iphone in the casino and amazingly it was returned to me in no time. Rooms some have a sea view, always my preference no matter the weather, it's a nice changing landscape.

« Lovely man on Reception »

I would just like to say what a delightful young man you have working on your Reception desk. I attended a charity ball at your hotel on Saturday evening and left a laptop behind. I have been liaising with Steven who made it his task to track this down for me. When I arrived to collect he was so helpful and it made such a change to see someone with a smiley face, who actually looked as though he was enjoying his job. Thank you Steven

« Much better than expected. »

We stayed recently after attending a function at the hotel. As our room had been booked many months ago, the car parking fee was waived. The entrance at the back of the hotel isn't particularly welcoming, but the reception staff made up for it. They were friendly, helpful and cheerful. Our room, although small and overlooking the car park at the back, was clean and comfortable, and very quiet at night. We slept very well! Breakfast was fine, served in the dining room, overlooking the bay. The only criticism would be that there was no granola available. The service at breakfast was very attentive. Checkout was at 12.00, so plenty of time to make use of the leisure facilities or walk along the prom. We were happy withe hotel and would certainly stay here again.

« Good location with helpful staff and great breakfasts »

We travelled as a family of four and booked two rooms for three nights with a connecting door. This gave us plenty of space. With hindsight I wish I had paid more for rooms with a panoramic sea view because the most disappointing thing about our stay was the constant noise coming from the car park that our room overlooked. The nights were warm and with no air conditioning in the room we slept with the windows open. There was a loud generator noise coming from the hotel pool and spa area below us which did make it hard to sleep with the windows open. As regards the car park behind the hotel it costs £5 to park there for 24 hours. Alternatively, you can usually find a space at the front of the hotel along the promenade which is free for 24 hours. The hotel is clean and the staff were very pleasant and helpful, particularly at breakfast which as well as offering guests a stunning view of the sea also provides the hungry traveler with a comprehensive hot and cold buffet range and items cooked to order (such as famous Manx kippers). The hotel offers free Wifi in the hotel rooms which was very welcome, although we did find that the connection was lost every few minutes which means you have to keep logging in. The swimming pool was also very welcome - clean and well maintained. All things considered, I would recommend this hotel very highly, particularly if you can get a room with a sea view.

« Great Location - shame they introduced a parking charge »

Nice friendly Hotel in a great location. I had to pay £15 to park. The machine only takes pond coins. Who carries 15 pound coins? The rate is the same for residents and non residents. Some kind of discount for residents would be good.

    « very good »

First impression when entering via the back door on the promenade wasn't too good ,but when reaching the reception this impression soon changes .check in was very quick and the receptionist helpful.the sea view room was exactly what we expected clean, comfy bed and good wifi reception.maybe the bathroom could be a bit bigger and updated a tadge but was quite adequate.breakfast was excellent plenty of choice and no big queueThe .restuarant in the evening was again excellent but a little dearer than similar establishments in the area ,same with the bar prices .would gladly stay again if in the area

All staff encountered where friendly.Going for food you need to request a seat at the window for the amazing view. Breakfast great choice, compliments to the chefs for the food. Some decoration need would improve the look of the place will return found plenty of things to do and good info of local area from Jo well done!! and the tourist info We will return still lots to see and do thank you to you all for a great visit to Isle of Man

    « Very good »

Hotel in a very good location however as a paying guest the car park charge is off putting you would think a parking pass could be issued at check in for the duration of your stay.food in the hotel is excellent however service in the bar and resteraunt is very slow during busy periods otherwise a great hotel

« Could be a much nicer Hotel with some attention »

Good position, but the Hotel needs a complete refurbishment and updating. The entrance carpets and walls are in poor condition. I will say that the staff were very friendly and helpful. The chicken my wife ate in the restaurant was overcooked and like rubber. My fish and chips was fine.

« very pleasant and enjoyable stay »

we had a sea view room with an amazing view, the room itself was very comfortable, exceptionally clean (cleaned every day). the hotel itself is a little tired in places but not worth fussing on about. breakfast was a feast off anything you wanted, anyone who could not be satisfied or find something to eat must be a very very hard to please person. evening dinner was once again cooked to a high standard, with plenty of choice to suit every taste. all the hotel staff we encountered were really helpfull. the receptionists were very pleasant and bent over backwards to be helpful. The waiters & waitresses were also very pleasant and endeavoured to cater to our every need. we will certainly return to this hotel in the future.

    « An enjoyable weekend »

Just back from a weekend away, worth the extra to upgrade to a superior room with a sea view. Was a fantastic view each morning. Hotel and room was very clean, and bar prices reasonable. Bit busy at breakfast, especially Saturday morning.

    « Enjoyed it »

We stayed for three nights in a superior sea view room. Well worth it as there was a small balcony and a fantastic view across the whole bay. We found the lady on reception to be charming and very helpful. Breakfast was fine although a little chaotic. The pool, jacuzzi and sauna were all good quality and again the staff were all helpful and welcoming. As has been said the building is a 60's eyesore in the middle of fine Victorian terraces. Inside it is a little tired in places but very clean and well kept. The casino was fun and again all the staff were friendly. As to parking there was a small charge but we were able to park on the promenade over the road for up to 24 hours for nothing using the parking disc supplied by the car hire company. We would definitely return.

    « GOOD(not best) WESTERN Palace Hotel & Casino »

I stayed to this hotel for a short holiday. It is located on the seafront which was very convenient as combines the nice view with the central location. The rooms were spacious with a very nice view(worth it and it is not expensive). They are also well equiped with all the necessary. However they are a little bit dated as the rest of the hotel. The staff was ok, nothing special. I found the breakfast quite expensive (12,50 per person) and for this reason I didn't try it. There is a casino, a restaurant and a night club at the basement and for this reason you do not feel that you are in a hotel (I personally did't like it). There is a free indoor pool with a nice view of the promenande. However if you stay there you will most likely enjoy it.

    « Getting no better... »

My latest visit here started badly when I noticed they had installed a pay and display machine, having to pay through the nose for the rooms here is bad enough but to charge people staying there for parking is awful. £3 for an overnight stay, I know, on the face of it £3 is not too bad but like I say having paid through the nose for a room £100/night with breakfast an astronomical £12 on top regardless of what you have, £3 for the privilege of parking there is just a step too far. The receptionist was snotty, maybe something to do with him being the only one on when the ferry came in but not an acceptable greeting. The rooms are still the same, draughty and falling apart at the seams. TV remote battery had obviously run out but reception refused to answer the phone so I gave up. The room had an adjoining door which rattled all night long as the neighbours had a window open, that did not help my already grumpy mood. Had the Mount Murray not burnt down I would have stayed there, I suspect that due to them having a monopoly on the IOM they are making the most of it. if you can, stay elsewhere, I for one will be looking at alternatives for my next visit.

« Comfortable hotel for short break »

I visited the Isle of Man on business with colleagues and we opted to stay at The Palace Hotel on the seafront in Douglas. It is a very peasant hotel but for me the Casino, club etc did not appeal, unfortunately many seafront hotels in this area have closed down due to lack of trade. We were greeted well by the staff and allocated very nice sea view rooms which were well furnished and had obviously been refurbished of late. The hotel had a very good Health Club and pool which is used every morning, the staff there were very helpful and friendly. The hotel restaurant was good also, providing adequate breakfast either from the hot display of cooked to your liking, it also has a buffet dinner and on Sunday's this is a carvery and was very nice indeed. The bar area provides bar snacks / meals which again were reasonable but the actual bar area was a little uncomfortable. In fact this hotel obviously attracts more senior citizens out of summer months and I was surprised there was not a lounge area to relax, this really should be a must. But overall my colleagues and I were very happy with our stay and the friendliness of the staff.

    « Ok ish »

Check in staff were a little cold, room clean and tidy, bathroom a little tired, breakfast was good, my room was at the back, and it was noisy early hours of Sunday morning when the night club below the hotel kicked out, all said for the price paid cannot complain

    « Good value »

We stayed here for a weekend break. Initially we were in a standard double but we upgraded to the superior sea front room. There was a huge difference, the new room being a lot fresher as well as larger. The hotel itself is an odious building, I have no idea how it got planning permission on a Victorian promenade. It has a decent car park though and there is a leisure suite and small cinema on site. No idea what the casino is like either. We didn't have breakfast in the hotel but had room service one night and the food was a good portion, well seasoned and decent value. Wifi was good too and the only complaint with the room would be that it just had 2 spare power points. It would also be nice if the doors were soft shut, we were woken at 5.30AM both mornings by doors slamming. The best thing with the hotel is the price, they do some very good packages and we will probably return.

« Hotel needs a refurb, restaurant poor and restaurant staff need direction »

This is my 8th and possibly last visit to this hotel. I have left reviews in the past but sadly no improvement. Rooms: Rooms clean and tidy but wardrobe not deep enough to hold coat hangers. had to remove ironing board to get clothes in at an angle. Tea making facilities OK and hot chocolate which was a nice touch. Restaurant: nobody takes ownership of the tables. it is pot luck who takes orders for drinks etc. Carvery 'chef' had to be extricated from the kitchen to serve. small queue forming waiting to be served - not good. No biscuits for cheese however some were brought to my table but none put out for other guests. Roast cod was nice as was fillet steak but I would question if it was indeed 10oz. vegetables overcooked with mushy broccoli and cauliflower. Casino is the only plus point about this hotel, bright and friendly with a good atmosphere. Checking out tomorrow and will be looking for an alternative for my next trip to the Isle of Man. Sorry Palace but you have had every opportunity to put things right.

« Excellent value for money »

This is the 2nd time that we have stayed at The Palace Hotel and, since our last stay, just over a year ago, the public areas are looking a little tired and in need of a bit of tlc. However, our room was immaculately clean; well cared for and it had everything we could possibly need for a 5 day stay. The housekeeping staff keep everywhere spotless and have a good eye for detail: for example they actually came back to our room in the early evening to bring warm fresh towels as they hadn't had enough earlier in the day when servicing the room. The rooms at the front of the hotel have a fabulous view of the seafront and bay and have a small, but adequate balcony. Upon check in, the reception staff ensured that we were given the code for free wifi access and free parking allocation. They were informed us about the films showing at the Palace Cinema, which is situated just across the car park from the hotel. All very convenient and easy to use. We booked bed, breakfast & evening meal and could not fault any meal that we had in the restaurant for choice; variety and excellence. The buffet style meals allow every diner to have exactly what they want and the quality of the food is excellent. Every single one of the waiting staff are, without exception, helpful; friendly and polite but especially the Maitre d, Simon, who took excellent care of us and ensured that we had a good table overlooking the sea each evening. There is a very pleasant bar within the hotel and, on some evenings, we enjoyed listening to a very talented singer and harpist, whist enjoying a drink after dinner. The barman, David, was good fun and made for excellent company. We made good use of the hotel's spa facilities. Whilst the swimming pool isn't large, it is perfectly acceptable for a swim. There is also a jacuzzi and gym that all hotel guests are welcome to use, free of charge. With easy access to the spa, from within the hotel, there is no inconvenience to use it and, again, the staff there are very pleasant and helpful. I would happily go back to this hotel again because, whilst it does look a little tired in places, the excellent staff more than make up for that.

« Great for bed and breakfast, terrible restaurant »

We booked 2 nights in this hotel at 2 weeks notice and got a very good deal through booking.com. The hotel itself is rather 'tired' in terms of decor but our twin room was modern, clean and comfortable. The hotel kindly gave us a room near the lift at our request. We used the hotel pool where facilities were safe, clean and the staff helpful to my friend who is disabled. All of the hotel staff were friendly and helpful. Hotel breakfast was fine and the serving staff charming and helpful. However, Carvery dinner was dreadful. Service was poor, no communication between staff who didn't seem to know who was meant to be seating people, who taking drinks orders etc. The cold starters were OK, prawns, salad etc but the hot Carvery food was really poor, worse than my memory of school dinners. Gristly, tough lamb in gravy, burnt roast potatoes, overlooked veg which I think were frozen in origin. Carvery food is easy and cheap to produce and to keep warm and the hotel messed up on this one. Bed and breakfast was good value for money but avoid the Carvery!

    « Very disappointed »

'Best Western' is normally a name I associate with good, dependable, value for money, comfortable accommodation and amenities. I hold a Best Western Rewards card as It is normally one of my preferred chains. Between work and leisure, I spend a considerable amount of weeks in hotels every year and even though this is not the worse hotel I have ever stayed in (and I have stayed in some real disaster) it's not that far away from it. On the whole, it was not an absolute nightmare that will haunt me forever, as there were good things - not many - but some. The location is brilliant and if you have a sea view, then it truly is a lovely one, and the breakfast is actually very good indeed. However, the public areas - and even more so the rooms, are just so tired. The place has been run into the ground and is just about at crumbling point. This whole situation is very much exacerbated by the absolute negativity of the vast majority of the staff, worthy of particular mention are the reception personnel who are the first contact that customers will normally have and where initial perceptions are formed, so surely you need to make an effort there!!! I have plans to return to the Isle of Man - but I will not be staying here I am afraid, the competition along the Promenade is too stiff - especially when you don't even make an effort.

    « Wouldn't go here again »

I would imagine that 25-30 years ago this was a state of the art hotel. However, I doubt that much has been done to it in all that time! To begin with we were greeted by a sour-faced girl on reception who offered us no cheery greeting, with no effort to make us feel welcome. Our room was adequate with a view of the sea, and a sofa. In the bathroom we had a shower over a small bath with a curtain. Breakfast was buffet style, but kippers could be ordered which were good. I don't think our sheets were changed the whole time we stayed (a week!) and the whole experience came to a head when I went to get in the lift, and when the doors opened there was a pile of poo I the middle of the floor!! I'm not kidding. After reporting this to reception it was cleared up, but it was disgusting, and it kind of summed up the whole state of the place. I wouldn't go again until a major refurbishment had taken place.
