"Ruined my whole experience."

31/08/2018

Room 406 was terrible because of the air conditioning vent located on the patio. It blew hot air on me during entire stay. Couldn't enjoy the patio at all. I couldn't even hear that incredible ocean I paid out the nose to get for an ocean front room. It was deeply disappointing . I wouldn't stay in that room again . If you get it, demand to be moved!!! The pool was filthy, and the hot tub had hair floating in it and the jets didn't work. It was hot, but no jets worked, besides it was nasty. Usually you can smell lots of chlorine in the pool and around the pool area, but you could barely detect any at all. Bad idea to get in when not enough chlorine is being used!!! Patio chair was broken and needed a spare brought to the room, and beer tabs and crumbled food left unswept from under the couch. Breakfast was good but that's not enough of a reason to pay outrageous money for an ocean front room.

"Decent Hotel Great Location"

4
28/08/2018

I wavered between 3 and 4 stars but decided to go with 4 because of the location. The hotel is right on the beach and it stands by itself in what seems like a residential neighborhood. We had a room that was ocean front, 3rd floor. Got to see a beautiful sunset and sunrise. The room was clean. It was big enough for a family of 4 or 5. There were two queens in a separate bedroom, a murphy bed in the living room and a sofa bed (I think). With a full sized refrigerator and a kitchen sink and microwave you could feed a family. The pool is small but outdoor. No shade. The room was clean but a little worn looking furniture. The price for beachfront was great though. Breakfast was usual fare for Best Western. They had whole fruit, hot bacon and eggs, instant oatmeal, instant grits, etc. The breakfast room overlooked the Wright Museum monument. Neat.

"Nice hotel for short stay"

27/08/2018

The hotel overall is in need of an upgrade. The room was fine for the short stay, however as we were out of the room except to sleep/shower. We were pleasantly surprised by the larger size fridge in the room. Location was central to lots of attractions. We also liked that it had a pool and was on the beach. Breakfast had hearty options.

"Great beach hotel"

25/08/2018

Clean, comfortable hotel room. Room had 3 full sized beds - perfect for a group of friends. Hotel is beach front, including pool and hot tub. Staff was really friendly. We would stay here again. Also, great they don't have 2 night minimum.

"Not bad, not great"

3
25/08/2018

We have stayed at many best western locations and this was very average. For the price, it seemed not a great value. Being the only best Western on the island, it's really the only option. You did not add or subtract anything from our trip.

"Ok till last day"

23/08/2018

This hotels service was wonderful up to last day of trip. The housekeeping service was terrible. They never completed making up our room, they left trash in bathroom. And left my clean towels on the unmade bed. One other thing there were never any towels for the pool, they never restocked them. However the room was spacious and beds very comfortable

"Perfect"

23/08/2018

I have been staying at hotels for years. This hotel was in a great location for restaurants ect. The beach and facility's were perfect for my family. The pool was nice and located near the beach so we could go back and forth. Maybe some grills or a gazebo on dune would be a nice addition.

"NEEDS UPDATING!!!"

3
21/08/2018

We just spent one night at this hotel. The beds were comfortable and the room was very clean, but the whole place is in dire need of updating. The decor was drab and the entire suite was so dark it was hard to see how to do hair and makeup. The bedroom was very small and hot while the rest of the suite was very cool. There was absolutely no beach vibe at all. The room used for breakfast was very small, given the size of the hotel and there weren't nearly enough tables to sit down and eat. It was difficult to move around the tables and chairs that were there. There was no decaf coffee, so you had to use a small kcup coffee maker that took about 5 minutes to fill. All in all, we found the suite very depressing and certainly not worth the price we paid to have a beachfront suite. Unless it is updated, we would not stay there again.

"Great experience "

20/08/2018

We arrived a little bit early and our room was not ready. Front desk was super nice asked us if we need cold water - it was very hot and humid on that day. We spent an hour at the beach and room was ready when we were back. We love the ocean front room. It's like a one bed room. Refrigerator is big. Separate makeup mirror and sink outside bathroom, which is perfect for a family with 2 teenage girls. Sunrise was beautiful. One day there was a thunderstorm before sunset. After the storm, looked out our window there was double rainbows with lightning at the background. It's breathtaking. Breakfast was good. This hotel is at a very good location which is not far from anything. There are tons of activities go north or south. All at reasonable driving distance.

"Poorly managed"

18/08/2018

Stayed here 4th of July week this year. I sent an e-mail to Best Western management after our stay, they promised to send a gift card to compensate us for our problems...still haven't received it.... - Power washing contractor worked past 10pm the first night. Woke my kids up. - Painting contractor worked the next night PAST 3AM...INCLUDING OUR FRONT DOOR. Calls to the front desk to complain when unanswered. - Returned from a day trip the third day to find our door left open with the deadbolt by the maids for who knows how long. Head of cleaning blamed new staff being trained. - Generally bad maid service and awful wifi for the entire stay.

"Needs fixing "

1
15/08/2018

The patio door is broken, with sharp nails sticking out and very difficult to open. Tried to open it and the nails scraped my hand since it's impossible to get ahold of it without your hand being close to the exposed nails. The handle is loose. Called concierge and someone came and said the maintenance man supposedly came to fix it but not done properly?

"Excellent service and staff"

5
13/08/2018

I have stayed with my family previously and will continue to go back. They have an excellent staff that is helpfil and ffriendly ., Ocean front and convenient access to the beach.. The kids love the pool and parents can relax in the hot tub.

"Great for a beach trip!"

4
12/08/2018

The room was wonderful and very close to the beach. The pool was relaxing and clean. It was a great location. My only drawback was that the paint needs updated and walls need washed in spots. We stayed on the first floor with quick access to everything. If you are in higher floor rooms, the view of the beach would be amazing. The room is spatious with a separate room for the bedroom and a living room area with table and couch. This was a great setup for all of our needs on this stay!

"Vacation"

11/08/2018

Great place to stay. Kid friendly. Spacious rooms that exceeded my expectations! Rooms were very clean and staff was so accommodating! The kids loved the Murphy bed. Great pool area and loved that our suite opened to the pool. Made it convenient to go back to rooms to get snacks or forgotten items. The beach access was convenient and great area to wash off sand on our return. The only down side was the space for the breakfast area was very small. Not enough room for all the tables and space to navigate the area. But the breakfast staff and selections were awesome! Will definitely book here again!

"Recent stay at Best Western Ocean Reef Suites"

2
01/08/2018

We have stayed at Best Western for the past few years and this year we noticed a TREMENDOUS decline in the facility. Pool area, hot tub were disgusting. They weren't cleaned properly, sand on the bottom of pool and hot tub. We experienced "some undesirable people" that were jumping over the fence and using the facilities. The security on the premises is extremely poor. There were things in the room that needed to be repaired and weren't. I was told that the hotel has recently changed ownership. I hope that the new ownership will remedy the situation or else I will definitely look for another place to stay.

Amanda O, Manager at Best Western Ocean Reef Suites, responded to this review
Hello and thank you for your review. We are under new ownership and we are so happy that you are providing us this insight so that we know where improvements need to be made. We have noticed that the conditions at the property are not where we would like them to be and we have been remedying each item as quickly as possible. We will continue to make improvements. As far as your concerns, we will be addressing these with our team directly to ensure these mistakes do not reoccur. Thank you again and we hope to have you stay again soon.

"Amazing Rooms & Wonderful Staff!"

4
25/07/2018

The room was a suite style & I did not expect such a huge room! The living room was separate as was the kitchen, bathroom, and bed room! There were two full beds and a murphy bed in the living room which was so cool! Everything was modern & clean. There was an additional sink and mirror outside of the bathroom which was useful when more than one person was getting ready. It smelled fresh and everything was spotless! The only downside were the outdoor amenities. The pool was rather small but still great! But the hot tub water was dirty and needed a good cleaning. The chairs for the outdoor balcony to our room were cheap, flimsy ones so that could use an upgrade. But all-in-all I will definitely recommend this hotel to anyone! The beds were so comfortable & they each had 4 pillows which I adored! I will be staying here again!

"Smoker's Haven (not a compliment)"

23/07/2018

Hotel has its ups and downs. For the record, we stayed in a poolview suite with two double beds and a pull down double in another room. We stayed in July 2018. Let's start with the bad: 1. The hotel is WAY too smoky as in cigarette smoke. Our room interior was not bad but the balcony couldn't be sat on sometimes because other guests aren't restricted from smoking there. All the public areas especially the elevator really stunk. Also we caught the hotel staff hiding in bathrooms and stairwells smoking. The hotel makes no attempt to restrict their staff or guests from smoking in areas clearly marked no smoking. This will prevent us from staying again even with all the positives. 2. The room for the breakfast was WAY too small. Guests really don't have a choice but to go back to their rooms carrying their plates and drinks. Bad for those far away from the buffet and might lose their appetites in the smoky hallways and elevators. 3. The room was a bit small for a suite that advertises it sleeps 6 and for the money spent. 4. The beach in front of the hotel is not very wide and gets quite crowded partly because a public beach access is right next door. Now for the good: 1. Staff was friendly and helpful. Front desk and maids were very responsive. 2. Location of the hotel was great. Close to lots of attractions and the access to highway 12 and 158 was easy because traffic lights were very close. This is important because traffic can be very heavy. 3. Parking lot was roomy with big spaces.More than enough spaces for a full hotel. 4. Breakfast was very good and had some hot choices, eggs and bacon or sausage, as well as the usual continental fare. 5. Room was clean and the beds were comfortable. Fridge was good size but could use an ice maker. Microwave was helpful. Sink both in and out of the tub area was very nice to have. Also had a kitchen sink. 6. Balcony was adequate with both pool and ocean view.

"Perfect for a beach vacation!"

5
22/07/2018

We loved our stay at the Ocean Reef. The large, spacious suites were perfect for multiple family members. Two sinks in the bathroom, a door to the bedroom, and a sliding door to the living room gave privacy for those sleeping in the murphy bed. The full-sized fridge held all our beverages and lunch items for a day at the beach. The rooms were very clean and well-maintained. Easy access to the beach with chair and umbrella rental right outside the hotel was so convenient. From our balcony, we could see our family members at the beach, which was so nice since we had mulitple families staying at the hotel. As first time visitors to the Outerbanks, the location was perfect. So many great restaurants were only a short drive or walk away. This place sure beats spending a wad of money for the weekly condo or house rentals! We would definitely stay again!

"Understaffed and Overrated!"

15/07/2018

We arrived at the hotel around 2:30 PM and check-in is at 4 PM. I called ahead to find out if early check-in is available and was advised to find out when I arrive since she could not tell me over the phone. I go to check in and I'm told there has been a high turnover of rooms and the room is not ready however to come back at 4 PM. I come back 10 minutes before 4 to beat the line of people and I'm told again the room is not ready, however, I will be contacted on my cell phone when the room is ready. I leave and 5 minutes later I receive an unknown caller id call and listen to the voicemail stating the room is ready. We turn around and go back to the hotel and there is a long line of people waiting. When I finally get to the counter Tracy tells me again the room is not ready. I tell her "you called me stating the room is ready otherwise I wouldn't be here". Tracy insists it wasn't her on my voicemail. So I play the voicemail (on speaker) from Tracy stating the room is ready. Tracy proceeds to say it must have been a mistake and she will have to downgrade me. I booked a king suite ocean view room, however, upon arrival the room assigned was a double bed poolside view. I'm not sure if this is what she meant by downgrade, however, I showed Tracy the reservation on my phone that states king suite ocean view and she was not willing to accommodate stating I didn't book through Best Western so she can assign whatever room. Tracy advised to issue my complaint with the booking site and not Best Western. I had a horrible night in that tiny bed and was so exhausted and tired when I woke up. We have a king bed at home and that is why I booked a king and would not have even considered this hotel knowing we would be in a double bed! The only positive is the room was clean and spacious. The tub had mildew and there were a few hairs in the bathroom yet overall the room was clean. I would not return to this hotel and do not recommend it. Please beware if you book through an alternate site you may not get the room you paid for!

"No worries."

11/07/2018

We have been coming to the Outer Banks for numerous years, and the service at the Best Western has always been "top notch". The location is fantastic, with the ocean accessible from your room. Also, the Wright Brothers monument is directly across the street. Finally, the breakfasts are fantastic and included in the price.

"Great short stay"

4
09/07/2018

Mid June, my family of four stayed here from Friday-Tuesday. It was the perfect size space for the number of days. Our room was clean with adequate linens and towels. The breakfast buffet was pretty good with a good variety but the actual space was small. The elevator was a little gross with an unpleasant aroma but we stayed on the second floor so we just took the stairs. Loved the ocean view from the balcony and full size fridge. Would definitely come back for a short stay again!

"Another great trip"

05/07/2018

This was our third year in a row staying at this Best Western. Honestly the rooms are huge. The hotel is all suites with a separate living area and dinette set. There is a mini kitchenette with a full sized refrigerator. The bedroom comes with two “full” sized beds (not queens) so if your a little bigger than normal it might be a tight squeeze for two to a bed. The rooms were very clean. The room attendants were all very nice and helpful. Terrific beach access and a nice size pool. Breakfast room a little small but the smiling and helpful attendants made up for the room size. Breakfast changed daily. Great beach hotel. Will be back next year.

Rooms were clean. I would recommend an ocean view room. It is worth the cost! Breakfast was included and helped to have available. We stayed here 2 nights before heading to the OBX. It worked out perfect!

Beautiful rooms, modern, clean and comfortable double suite partial ocean view. Didn't use any of the facilities, like breakfast honestly they were not very accessible besides the pool. We didn't use but looked fine. I liked the set up of the rooms and all the extra towels. It did get a little warm at night as we tried to control the air and it seemed preset, but comfortable during the day. Nice place!

18/06/2018

Booked this hotel for its beach access and positive reviews. Was rather disappointed when we got there. Hotel is old, WiFi fades in and out constantly, bedroom dark due to only window faces hallway. All rooms are suites, and the living area was really nice. Breakfast area very cramped. Beds comfortable.

"First Family Trip to OBX"

4
18/06/2018

I had been fishing with my company here before in the years past, but this was my first trip here with my family. I'm a Best Western traveler and save my points, so I didn't even look anywhere else. I arrived on Saturday evening 06/09/18 and was checked in by a very friendly lady who was helpful again to us during our stay. I was on the 5th floor great view of the beach. This is an older property, but is clean and has been well maintained. A great breakfast to start the day with a rotating menu (a lot of places we've stayed has the same thing every day.) The breakfast room is a little small, so we just took it back to our room a couple days, saw several other people doing the same thing. All in all was a great stay, we've been trying different places on our vacations the past couple years, but if we decide to vacation OBX again, we'll definitely stay at BW Ocean Reef Suites. The fact that all the rooms are suites is another big plus. The beds were a little firm for my liking, but they are about anywhere you stay.

"Great property"

11/06/2018

We stayed two nights in room 406. It faced the pool and had ocean views-something we were pleasantly surprised about. Check in process was ok, nothing bad but nothing that stood out. There was one family in front of us so we had to wait our turn. Lobby is a bit small in my opinion, with only enough space for maybe two groups of people. Staff was friendly and courteous. Our room was spacious with two double beds in a bedroom and a pull down bed in the living area. Two adults and three children fit perfectly and all of the beds were comfortable. Full size fridge and microwave were extremely helpful during our stay. Upon arrival to our room, there were crumbs on the ottoman but everything else appeared to be clean. During our second day, the toilet handle broke and I called the front desk. Within three minutes they had a staff member in our room to make the repair. We were very impressed and pleased with the response. Housekeeping was a bit of a let down as they didn't vacuum our room. There was visible sand on the floor and it was left there, with only beds getting made and a few towels that were replaced. This is frustrating as I had left them a $10 tip for their service. The breakfast each morning was awesome. Lots of hot items as well as cold. Fresh coffee with yummy creamers and a nice selection of juices. Breakfast staff kept everything stocked and always had smiles on their faces. Pool time was fun for the kids and beach access was easily obtained from the pool area. We were even lucky enough to see some dolphins while visiting the beach one afternoon. Overall, we had a great time and were happy with our stay. We're hoping to return in the future.

Stayed in a room with a balcony facing the sea, it was really good for beach promenade. It was the season that it was also possible to drive on the beach. Professional hotelstaff who noted that we were members. We really enjoyed it, clean and the staff was doing their best to make us feel comfortable / Bodde med balkong mot havet, en riktigt bra strandpromenad. 29/05/2018

The property is in need of updating. Our room was just adequate. Some of the lights did not work, the toilet base was loose and rocked on the floor, the bathroom mirror angled down toward the sink, the walls showed signs of many former holes and fixture loctions that were not patched or painted properly.

We experienced reservation issues. We did not receive the type of room we reserved which was disappointing since we were there for our 27 wedding anniversary. The room was not as clean as I would have expected; candy and small toys on the floor.

"Room with a view"

3
07/05/2018

It was our 50th anniversary. We honeymooned in Nags Head and returned for our 25th, so of course we had to come to the area for our 50th. Reserved an ocean front suite. Excited about that. The suite was fantastic. Separate bedroom, large living/dining area. But the VIEW? Could barely see out of the sliding glass door. The seal was broken on the door, and that made it next to impossible to enjoy the view. The stationary glass on either side of the door wasn't broken, but the drapes kept you from having a great view. I was SO disappointed. I had told the guy at the hotel (I called the hotel direct to reserve) that it was our anniversary. I couldn't believe we had a room with a view that didn't have a view. So, if you are headed there, do NOT take room 406. Unless they can tell you that the door has been replaced. Ask for another room. Be warned that the wifi dropped often - if you are using laptops. And ask about the fitness center if that is important to you. I didn't ask if it was functional, as I had seen on the web site that they had one. But it was being remodeled when we were there. Would it be too much to put that temporary info on the website so that we could at least make an informed decision? The suite was just wonderful - but the view (or no view), the internet and the fitness center made it a bummer.

Monta S, General Manager at Best Western Ocean Reef Suites, responded to this review
Dear Guest, Thank you for taking the time to let us know about your visit and the kind words regarding the suite. We are however so sorry there were issues during your celebration time with us. I certainly understand your frustration and we will work hard to correct. Sincerely, Monta

Rare to find a fully appointed all suites hotel, in a beach town, with ocean views. The room was large, well appointed, and very comfortable. The hotel staff was very courteous. We were there off-season so the room rate was a veritable steal. Highly recommend this location.

Nice hotel, suites were very roomy and comfortable. Room had a balcony with a view of the ocean and seating. The bedroom was a separate room, comfortable beds, also had a table and chairs, plenty of seating, could sleep 6. Nice room with great location to ocean, restaurants and shops. This was off season so some were closed. Breakfast was OK, room was very hot, nothing great but it was good enough. Price was good, some outside maintenance being done but overall a nice place. We only spent one night.

I've stayed here about this time every year since 2011. Until now, I have been very satisfied. This year, not so much. I had planned on staying 8 nights, but only stayed 3. Partly because of the weather and partly because of of the facility. The housekeeper never made the bed, didn't replace the coffee on the first day. I had to go down to the office to beg for coffee. Basically it looks like new towels and emptying the trash was about it. If the housecleaning is going to be less on stays of multiple days, then this should be reflected in the bill, which of course it is not I requested a top floor room, but did not receive one. I was told there was construction going on. Come on, the top two floors? I did hear some banging when I got here, but nothing since. This makes the 3rd year that they have been remodeling. That seems a little odd. I ended up on the 3rd floor as far away from the ocean as you can get here. Being a Diamond member, I am supposed to get an upgrade. I guess this was it. The furnace is very noisy. It woke me up a few times in the first two nights. 3rd night coming up, and I expect the same. Sounds like it about to blast off for a rendezvous with International Space Station. Breakfast seems to have gotten skimpier. The usual breakfast lady from the past several years was not there. The current one mentioned that she had to step out for a few minutes to put the laundry in. Doing double duty it appears. Whoever has been doing the remodeling at this facility needs a little OJT. The two bathrooms which I have experienced after the remodeling appear to be shody. I'm going to give a hard look at coming hear next year. I may have to find a new winter getaway.

For the price, this place is great. The rooms were fairly recently remodeled and very clean. We came the day after Thanksgiving and they gave us a nice ocean front room. It was quiet. The lady at the front desk was very friendly.

Meant to write this right after we got home, but forgot. Visited here for a quick weekend after dropping our son off to college. We were going to stay at a house, but decided a hotel would be better because we weren't staying a week. This property is well-located and on a beautiful stretch of beach. I mean it was lovely. There's a pool as well, and it's okay, but not really a place to hang all day. They clean it well in the morning, which is great considering what it looks like at the end of the day. The hotel is also near lots of restaurants, some of which you can walk to. We kept waking up too late for breakfast, so I don't know how the food is on site. The workout room is marginal, but adequate for a basic workout. The staff is very friendly. The rooms were spacious and provided plenty of room for my active 7-year old twins to jump around. All in all, I'd stay here again.

Paid $275 with a Military discount for 2 nights but would have been better served at a cheaper motel. Both beds in room was broken down and uncomfortable. Double and King sizes was the only offering, no Queen size. Internet spotty and keep getting kicked off. Shower barely ran

I originally reserved (2) nights prior to arriving. I was on the 1st floor, with a dune view, which I'd requested. Unable to see anything other than the dune, I immediately requested to be moved the net day, provided a room was available. It was, in fact & I moved to my new room the next AM. This room had a MUCH better view!! I was prepared to pay more. They were kind enough to bill me @ the same price & I thank you immensely:)!!!

"If your not a group, you get the rooms that are left. Even when you made reservations 7 months in advance."

30/10/2017

For 15 years its been perfect. We sometimes bring friends and or family to share our vacation. The last 4 years after being assured when I made the reservations 7 months in advance, that we had the "direct ocean view" which is what they said to ask for, we get there only to find that we were moved to a lower floor. "Bumped for a group" that booked later than we did, but got us moved nonetheless. The first time it happened we just took the dune view and made the best of it. The next year after I asked what I needed to do to have the 5th floor, she assured me we were fine, since we were booking so far in advance. I'm not asking for a specific room, just the 5th floor. Again we were moved. I explained to the clerk at check in, that the person who took the reservation also said she put a note, not to move us on our reservation, and they still moved us. She was so terribly rude that the other guests checking in, apologized to me for the way SHE treated us. Imagine my embarrassment standing there while they treated me so hateful. Having total strangers apologize for her behavior. I'm not asking for special treatment, just fair treatment. Are all your guests valued, or just the groups?

23/10/2017

It was a rainy day and we called to see if we could get into our room early. We were told no, so we sat in the car for an hour, waiting for them to call back and say our room was ready. At 4pm, I went in and got our room, but they had never called. The elevator is outside which would be fine if it was a nice day. Rain dripped off the roof, there was a puddle in front of the elevator door and the floor in the elevator was always wet. Our room was large, separate bedroom and living area. We walked right to the sliding door to check out the view...the door must have a broken seal because it was foggy. Our room was on the second floor and our view was two utility trailers full of equipment. We could see a little of the ocean over the top of the hill. The water didn't taste good. No kleenex. One wastebasket for the entire room. The internet was good and lots of channels on the tv. We slept well until the neighbor came back at 1am and slammed their door, 3 times. The bed was comfortable and it was nice having a regular blanket and not one of those heavy comforters. No shower pressure. The breakfast area was on the third floor and too small. The eggs and sausage weren't hot.The refrigerator for the milk and yogurt was at floor level, so everyone who got into it, was bending right over in your face!

"Decent for cost, great beach location"

3
23/10/2017

Decent place to stay considering the cost. Only real negative was unencrypted wifi access is security exposure on Internet, thus we used our cell phone data connections instead, but had enough data quota for that to not cost us anything extra. This is all too typical of hotels now it seems. However, great ocean view from 5th floor room, and easy beach access was nice. Free breakfast was ok for choices/quality, although not as much choice as with typical Hampton Inn. Facility shows its age, although reasonably well-maintained. Surprised a bit that room access is via balcony/walkways, thus is exposed to weather (strong winds, some rain during our stay). Full beds not as roomy as queen size we are used to, and were a bit cramped in the room with little room to get in/out of the sides against walls.

"Mildly Disappointed"

3
22/10/2017

Although somewhat disappointing, our three night stay at this hotel was acceptable. A one bedroom suite met out needs and was a good value overall compared to other hotel options which are infrequent and more expensive. Problems experienced were: 1. When we arrived on our check-in day around 6:15 pm, we found a sign on the lobby door saying closed, will be back at 6:30 pm. About 10 minutes later the front desk clerk drove up, parked, unlocked the door, and checked us in. She said she had to run an errand, and she was the only person on duty. While waiting was not a major inconvenience, a customer shouldn't have to encounter a locked lobby door. 2. The bath tub plastic coating is peeling in several places including one that is nearly a foot wide. The checkout clerk said that ~15 tubs have that condition because of poor coating application by a contractor in the spring. The hotel is waiting until bookings decrease to hire another contractor to fix the tubs. 3. Sink lights around both mirrors are too dim. 4. Entrance door is hard to open; we had to shove it open with our shoulders. 6. The towel bar in the bathroom fell on the floor when one of the bar supports came off the wall. We will consider other hotel and private rental options in the future.

This was a beautifully orientated room as it relates to the magnificent Oceanview available from this hotel. The reception this was extremely professional , warm and cordial in greeting us. The room layout allowed privacy from the living room to the bedroom making it an excellent layout for families with children. The room was extremely clean, the beds very comfortable and our overall experience was exceptional. We are now considering going back for a one or two weeks day during the summer months.

"Did not meet my expectations - aging hotel"

2
11/10/2017

We stayed at this hotel while in Kill Devil Hills for a family wedding. The hotel is aging with plaster/stucco broken chipped and missing and ugly rusted ventilation grates on the balconies. Worse than that however were the dead cockroaches/waterbugs/Palmetto bugs that we found on our room's floor in the mornings. The staff dismissed our displeasure saying that they are "all over" in the south and that at least they were dead (hooray for them because they had sprayed), but honestly, I've traveled to Florida and Texas hotel rooms and have not ever see them inside my room.

04/10/2017

My husband and I stayed at the Best Western in Kill Devil's Hill during September 2017. We were there to sight see. We really enjoyed all the special places- the Wright Brothers Monument was visible from the back of the hotel balcony. The front of the hotel overlooked the pool and the ocean. We were on the 4th floor with a beautiful view! Initially we were put in a 1st floor room facing a dune! We had to request an ocean view from a higher floor, the room was very comfortable! It had two double beds, a kitchenette, a living room with a small couch and two comfortable chairs, a dinning room table with 4 chairs, a Murphy bed and the bathroom was divided by a door with toilet me tub on one side and a sink on the other with a coat closet. The breakfast was generous with 2 waffle makers! The staff was very helpful! The pool was cleaned everyday! Parking was plentiful and free! We had a very pleasant stay!

"Book Online/ No Upgrade"

2
04/10/2017

I first want to say we've stayed at this hotel for several years, making at least two trips each year, and have always had a great time. The hotel is old but they renovate on a routine basis and try to keep the grounds look good. And the front desk staff have always been wonderful. We were so excited to have achieved the Best Western Diamond Level just before this trip. We were looking forward to getting the perks afforded by this level. Before the trip I looked online and saw they now have rooms with in wall fireplaces! Nice! I couldn't find a rate for that room. The ocean view room was $139 and we'd get 15% off if booked online. But because we'd always gotten a rate better than advertised online, we waited until we got to the hotel. Big mistake. The best rate the front desk clerk would give us was $149, and she stated that was with the 15% off. She also said there was no upgrade. So then I asked to book a poolside room (which was cheaper) and upgrade us to ocean view, but she said "that's not the way it works". When we travel for business we stay at different hotel chains, and that IS the way they do it. In further discussing the matter, she stated had we booked online, she would have moved us to the ocean view room. WHAT????? I was getting ready to book online but my husband didn't want to wait, and told the clerk we'd take the room. After taking all our info, she states that our room isn't ready yet!!! So we had to wait anyway. As we were leaving the lobby I remembered we are to get a Welcome Gift, and when I told her this, she looked at me blankly. Then said that's right, and gave us one. She also gave us rags to wipe down our bikes. She did give us a wonderful room. High floor on the end. We'd never stayed in an end room, so we were excited to find out there's also a balcony off the bedroom. That night we found out none of the outlets in the living room walls worked, hence no lights or phone. And no balcony light either. So I couldn't read my book. The website only gives the reservation phone number, so I had to go to the front desk to get help. The night manager was very nice and tried several things to get them to work, and even asked if we wanted him to call the maintenance man. The strange thing is, sometime early early morning, all the lamps came on as well as the balcony light. But the phones still didn't work. Lastly, the room decor is very nice. They do an excellent job with that. It's an older hotel so we know there will always be problems, but the outlets plus pealing ceiling paint should have been addressed. The moral of our story is to book online and do not expect this hotel to give the perks that come with your BW Level. Here we thought it was a big deal to reach Diamond Level, but obviously this particular hotel doesn't care.

Monta S, General Manager at Best Western Ocean Reef Suites, responded to this review
Dear Guest, Thank you so much for taking the time to give us a review of your time with us. I am very sorry for the confusion with our team. We will certainly be sharing this information to ensure this is corrected moving forward. We value every guest but certainly want to take care of our BW members as best we can. 02/10/2017

We really enjoyed our stay last month. Based on previous reviews I was worried about bugs & cleanliness, but our room was in great shape. The room could use a fresh coat of paint, but the flooring looked recently updated. We had a beautiful view of the ocean from our living room area. The kitchenette was a great amenity. Each day our towels were restocked, which I greatly appreciated. We loved sitting out on our balcony, but the noise from the ACs did distract a bit from it. I thought it was a nice touch that the balconies had chairs & a little table. It was a perfect spot to sit for breakfast or after a long day on the beach. Take advantage of the breakfast! I would definitely stay here again.

"Reservation not honored!"

25/09/2017

I just happened to check my voicemail at work two hours before check in. I had a message from a manager informing me that my room was unavailable due to an electrical issue. I then called the hotel to ask what the issue was, perhaps I could live with it. Then the manager informs me someone was staying in the room. Of course you have to ask yourself, I thought there was an issue with the room. I'm not sure if customer service could get any worse. The manager also told me I could cancel my registration. To me that translates to “I don't care if you stay here or not”. I heard this same manager say the same thing to someone in the lobby on my previous visit. I understand I am not guaranteed a certain room but almost always have my request honored to be in Room 501. I don't even make reservations if that is not a possibility. I had called to possibly add a night the previous week and was told I was in Room 501. I not only did not get the room that was held for me, I did not even get the type of room I booked. I booked an ocean view room and got a pool/ocean view room. Again, I would not have booked a vacation to stay in a pool/ocean view room. I have stayed in this hotel so many times I know it very well and almost always stay in an ocean view king room. The next day I went in to the lobby to sarcastically tell Aimee thanks for ruining my stay. That night (after 10 PM) I got a call from the lobby inquiring if someone had been disturbing me by knocking on my door. Ironically I was disturbed and awakened by hotel staff wanting to know if someone was disturbing me. I now wonder if this was someone getting me back for expressing my dissatisfaction with my poor Best Western experience. I just recently went from platinum to diamond in the rewards program. I didn't think my rewards would go backwards.

24/09/2017

Great location right on the beach and just down the street from Kitty Hawk and restaurants. The suites have a lot of space, but the bedrooms with two queen beds are tight. The furnishings are really dated and appear to be from the 70's. We would have really enjoyed are stay except for this big air-conditioning unit on the outside wall that made an awful noise and vibrated the whole hotel room all night. if you stay here get another room away from the a/c unit.

18/09/2017

Recently stayed here for two nights . Our first visit to the OBX. Our room had a great view of the ocean. Right on the beach!! Wish the weather had been more cooperative! I would definitely ask for a room on a higher floor (4th or 5th) so you can see the water over the dune out front. The room is a nice size. Large balcony, living area with a comfortable couch, a couple of chairs, TV, dining table/ chairs and a Murphy bed. All of the furniture is comfortable and clean. Mini kitchen with a sink, microwave and a fridge. Bathroom has an additional sink and vanity out side the actual room, so that was super helpful . Bedroom has 2 beds, nightstand, large dresser, tv and closet. More room than your typical hotel room. Staff was all helpful and friendly. The breakfast is served from 7-10 am on the 3rd floor and was decent. Wifi was sketchy. The location alone really sells this place. We enjoyed our visit and would stay here again.

My room was next to the pool area. Until 1:30 in the morning the gate to the pool area banged. People where using the pool deck to go out to a party on the beach. At check out I told Gale that they should lock the pool area at night. Pool is closed no one should be in there and about the gate banging shut during the night. She never looked up from her computer and asked me did I call the front desk. I replied NO, she said "well I guess you don't have a problem". I felt this to be extremely rude. She could have said we will look into it and never did anther thing. but instead she chose to offend a paying customer.

06/09/2017

Yes this hotel is indeed right on the beach! We had an ocean view corner suite on the third floor and had a wonderful view of the beach from our balcony. We had a little problem with the balcony sliding door that was very difficult to slide open or close. We had a two bed - bedroom and another pull down bed in the living area that were all very comfortable. The living area also had a dining set, couch and chairs. Our room had a tea/coffee maker, microwave and fridge. The hotel has a pretty decent hot breakfast with eggs, breakfast meats, waffles, cereal, pastries, fruit, tea/coffee, juice, yoghurt etc. All the hotel employees we encountered were very friendly and helpful. The hotel also is close to many restaurants, Tanger outlets and other shopping and activities. We had one person in our party that was on a wheelchair and there were no issues with accessibility although the elevators did temporarily get held up on occasion. The pool and hot tub were nice. All in all the hotel was clean and family friendly and we will most certainly be staying there again.

"A little disappointed"

03/09/2017

Each night was a different price. We stayed Tuesday through Saturday. The closet the employees use to begin their cleaning was right next to our room so we could hear music all day. There was a musty stale smoke smell in the room. Didn't notice it until we had people come in next door. The people next to us were in and out of their room and kept letting their door slam shut. Maybe put something on the doors to slow how fast they shut. Hard to put the baby down to sleep when kids were constantly in and out.

"Good Room Size"

31/08/2017

This hotel was pretty good. Our room was able to sleep seven and the free breakfast was nice if very crowded every day. The pool and hot tub are nice, but the facility was a little rundown. Also, if you are travelling with a toddler be careful; our son could fit his head, and thus his whole body, through the slats on the balcony and walkways which was super scary. We didn't allow him out on the balcony because of this. They really should update these bars. I can't believe it is up to code.

Great location, we love staying in KDH, very relaxing, people are great, not Stuffy like other areas of the OBX, hotel is a beach hotel so don't expect 5star accommodations, staff is great. We could rent house if we wanted but everything is provided for us here.

19/08/2017

This hotel will work if your family needs separate space. The rooms have a good view and are comfortable. There are few choices of suites on the OBX. However there is room for improvement at BW. The hedges around the pool were untrimmed, the hot tub does not heat well, the maid service was poor, and there are few luggage carts. Water collects in front of the elevators. Our tub drain was broken and the toilet handle was sticky. We enjoy the hotel but noticed more issues than usual during our most recent stay.

Would not stay at this hotel...bedsheets stained. mold in room, bathtub peeling, cobweb on room ceiling, molding around bathroom rotted, spider weds above entrance to room, room smells moldy, carpet is old and smells, and wi-fi did not work. Pictures on the internet of this hotel and room look nothing like the room we stayed in for one night....we checked out the very next day ....didn't unpack. This hotel is in desperate need of a make-over, Our family of five were extremely DISAPPOINTED with the quality of this Best western.

Beds were comfortable. Very convenient location to the beach. The rooms are smaller than they appear on the website but were nice. Hot breakfast was good wish they would have been available till 11 AM so you could sleep in on your vacation. Convenient express checkout was nice .

"An average place to stay in the Outer Banks"

16/08/2017

We stayed at this hotel for 2-nights for a mid-week trip to the Outer Banks. We booked a room that would accommodate our family and were able to book a AAA rate on the Best Western website. We were excited to get an "oceanfront" room, and per the TripAdvisor reviews, I put in the notes that we'd love a room on an upper floor to enjoy the view. The negatives associated with this hotel were the overall advertisement of the rooms and the check-in process. We arrived a bit in advance of the 4:00 check-in time, but decided we'd see if our room was ready. It wasn't, which was fine. We were told to come back in a little while, but I asked if they wouldn't mind calling my cell phone when the room was available. I got a very half-hearted agreement and could tell that the front desk person probably had no intention of actually calling me. They didn't. When I checked back in person an hour later, our room was indeed ready. I found out that we'd been given a first-floor room, which was in contradiction to my request for an upper floor. I learned that they consider all of the rooms to be "oceanfront" as the hotel itself is on the beach. But that I would have had to book a room that was "ocean view" for an upper level room with a better view. I think that kind of wording is a bit deceptive and misleading. I would have appreciated it if someone from the hotel would have reached out to me in advance and told me the difference of their room categories/prices. I booked this room well in advance and if someone had read my special request notes, this confusion could have been avoided. What made it worse was that one of the front desk agents made a comment that I'd have to pay a lot more than I did to get an ocean view room and that kind of a comment was unnecessary. The hotel itself is just okay. Needs some TLC and some updating. The pool and hot tub area could use an upgrade. Given that it is right on the beach, we were pleasantly surprised that it didn't seem damp/musty or have any sand. The housekeeping staff does a good job. In terms of services while we were there, the breakfast room was so crowded on the first day we were there, that we bailed and went to a restaurant instead. On the second day, I went earlier and got a tray to bring food back to my family in the room. The staff in the breakfast room was very pleasant and helpful. The in-room wi-fi is painfully slow. Another positive was that we were granted a late check-out by one hour. We appreciated that. Overall, this hotel was just okay. I wouldn't be opposed to staying there again but would just adjust my expectations.

"Very dissapointed"

16/08/2017

These rooms are not worth the money. The sheet on the wall bed were gritty and musky. The sound of running water kept me awake for hours. I called the front desk and went into the office the following morning to tell them that the gritty sheets irritated my face. They only called to have the sheets changed. The last night there were roaches in the bathroom and kitchen. We had done early check out so I didn't call downstairs, but I won't go back.

Nice hotel, a little high but overall it was nice. needs a little updating to room but not bad at all. My only issue is you have to go to your room or the 4th floor to use the restroom when your at the pool. I had a 5 year old and he had to go quite often. Staff was very nice. Mona, was our cleaning lady. I would ask to use her broom and she had no problem also I needed her vacuum one time and she was very nice and helped me. She made a point to tell us good by as we were leaving and asked if we enjoyed our stay.. Love the customer service..

The hotel has seen much better days. Safety hazards exist on room balcony. Services were non existant. Problems were found late in evening of arrival. Calling for house keeping or mantainence or engineering at the hours problems were found seemed to be a lost cause, besides we were tired and needed to get some rest.

We had family from Michigan, Raleigh and Chicago with us and we all had a great stay! The staff was extremely friendly. The breakfast was great. The ocean view rooms on the 3-5 floor had wonderful views. The rooms size was incredible. Our daughter slept on the murphy bed in the den and loved it. The hotel is convenient to so many sites / restaurants. We didn't have time to use the fitness center or pool but both looked nice. We hated to leave.

01/08/2017

We enjoyed our stay at best western for the most part. Our suite was large and easily fit our family of five. The Murphy bed was very oddly placed so that when it was down it blocked movement between the kitchen area and the living room and balcony, which was a bummer when I woke for the sunrise and could not leave the bedroom because my husband was sleeping. The location of the hotel is awesome, so close to everything and right there on the beach. Lots of free parking. Exterior hallways but we felt safe. The elevators were fast and we were treated well... we were allowed early check in and kate check out. If you want a view ask for a third floor or above. We were on the the second oceanfront but could only see the sand dunes, no ocean beyond due to their height. The pool was fine, full of sand but that is typical on the beach I guess, the hot tub did not have jets that blew bubbles, or at least no button was around to turn them on. The room was clean, though we were not given enough toilet paper. I do wish the kitchen areas had some basic items to use like so many other hotels, but the big(ger) than normal hotel size fridge was awesome for leftovers and drinks. The best part of the stay was Connie in the breakfast area... she heard I was gluten free and by the next morning she and her manager had gluten free bread and waffles for me to eat. That is service!!! So thoughtful; we will be back for that reason alone. Thank you Connie!!!

My sister-in-law from Chicago selected this hotel for a mini-family reunion. It was comfortable and clean, and the suite style rooms provided space and privacy for parents and older kids. Location was central on OBX and the pool and beach access were wonderful. It was nice of the friendly and helpful hotel staff to arrange for the three most perfect weather days of the summer (80-82 degrees)! We would return.

"Worst hotel!"

27/07/2017

This hotel is a joke. Ocean view rooms aren't. You have a view of a shed. Cracks, holes, missing parts everywhere. Door was missing screws. Paint job was done by unprofessionals. Vents were covered up by cardboard. You couldn't even sit outside because the ac unit was so loud and disguisting. Worst hotel I've ever seen!

This is a good hotel to serve as a launch pad for your adventures in the outer banks. You are close enough to places to walk, the Wright Brothers monument is around the corner, there is a bicycle rental shop next door, free breakfast, beach access out the back gate, free parking, and you are a drive away from Hatteras National seashore, Corrolla and the other towns of the northern Outer Banks. The hotel itself is somewhat dated but good for the price point. The rooms are large and can accommodate quite a few people. Our suite (409) overlooked the pool and ocean with a view to the South. Use the south elevator as it is faster! The staff were kind and friendly with many foreign youth serving in the summer. We rented bikes next door and explored the many food options within a three mile area to the north or south on the beach road. There is even more nearby on the bypass road. The pool was cleaned daily and opened at 10 but we just went to the beach. There is a small workout room with a good mix of equipment. Breakfast was nothing special but we enjoyed the oatmeal, fruit and coffee.

"Nice Room, Spectacular Views!"

13/07/2017

We spent two nights at the Best Western at the end of January. The hotel was undergoing off-season maintenance, and it was obviously a very quiet time of year in the OBX, but we have to say, what a great time to visit, and what a bargain! Our room was huge, with a separate living room and half kitchen. The balcony looked out on the Atlantic, which was barely 100 yards away. The staff was friendly and the breakfast was free. Wha else can you ask for? If you don't mind cooler weather, the prices are amazing in mid winter and the sun was shining through our entire visit. I wouldn't want to do the OBX in July with the crowds...we'll be back, and it'll likely be winter.

12/07/2017

The size of the room is much larger than expect. My husband, myself and our 3 Grandson's all stayed in the same room comfortably. It was described as a suite and it definitely was a suite, it had a separate bedroom with 2 double beds, separate bathroom, 2 large closets, 2 bathroom sinks, pocket door to separate the living area from the bath and bedroom area, Murphy bed, large sofa, 2 side chairs, 3 end tables, ottoman, small table with 4 chairs, sliding glass door leading to a large balcony which had 2 chairs and table which overlooked the ocean.

10/07/2017

I am a local and have family visit from out of state quite often so when there is more coming than my small home can handle this is the hotel we always recommend for them to stay. It is very clean and well kept and the rooms are extremely nice and roomy. They stay in the off season a lot of times and we have found with the quality and size of the rooms (2 beds in a bedroom, Murphy bed and couch in the sitting room) and the prices compared to other hotels in the area this is hands down the best deal we've found. We love this best western hotel.

Nice location on the beach and the suites are very roomy and comfortable. Do not stay in Rooms 207 or 208 as they are located across from the housekeeping laundry room and the ice dispenser as well as above the pool where they ran pool cleaning equipment at 8 a.m. each day.

"Great location, good room"

06/07/2017

Wonderful location, right on the beach with private access to the beach. We stayed in a suite, so we had plenty of room for our family of five. Most of the balconies face the ocean, but a few don't. We booked this room a couple months in advance and were able to get a decent deal compared to what the room cost closer to our trip. The elderly gentleman who works in the breakfast area was probably the most friendly, warm-hearted, welcoming individuals we came across on our trip. Always smiling, polite, and full of southern charm. Would love to stay here again.

I reported them to bbb our room was full of bugs. The manager who was not there said I left the door open which I did not room was really nice the ac was broke I have a video hopefully it will let me load our tub was filled with 100 black bugs we ask for another room Anything manager would not come see our complaints we were offered 100 back never received it, I will post on every site what happened here pull hot tub wasn't operating mind you we paid 300 dollars for the room. All we needed was to be moved or listened to did not get I also reported them as military unfriendly with our base list of business that don't support or have any standards. The chamber of commerce was spoke to as well like I said there was a ton of issues but lack of customer service and poor management ruined our experience with this hotel chain. It is hard to see the bugs but I can't upload video the ac was so loud that you could Not hear the ocean check your room before you swipe that card.

Killed 6 spiders the first night.. one in the bed we slept in.. wifi was horrible.. water pressure was terrible and the water was super hot.. staff was mostly helpful except checking out because the desk person was in another conversation. She never gave me a total, asked about my stay, or to return room keys. All the wall patches were left unsanded and unpainted.. also there were a few spots that were really dirty in the room.. but bathroom was clean.. beach location was beautiful though

Came for business trip and it didn't disappoint like most the hotels in this area that are older and in need of remodel. This room was bigger than most loved the space the Murphy bed gave in the main area.....would definitely come back with my husband, as just the two of us this would make more sense to stay in, in an area oversaturated with expensive rental homes.

Nice hotel accept for the teenagers that helped themselves to the pool and hot tube area. Reported and nothing was done because they were not guests there. Also one of the the lobby ladies was very rude when I asked for a extra sheet.

"Gross"

1
27/06/2017

Dirty, Nasty, Filthy, Gross....this pretty much sums up our room/stay. Bugs...98 to be exact on the ceiling in our room, a roach on the drapes, dead bug stains on the walls, dirty under couch and chair cushions, body hair under sheets, terrible room odor, slow WiFi if any, and no water pressure in shower. This is by far the worse hotel I've ever stayed in. Only nice thing was the view and waking up to the dolphins swimming in the ocean. Wish I could have heard the ocean but couldn't over the air unit grill thing on the patio.

"Room 514"

4
27/06/2017

We LOVED our stay for 5 nights in room 514. We had a king bed with a separate living room from bedroom which is ideal for families with children. Our room was very clean, which is an absolute must for us. We had our 2 year old daughter with us who touches everything. The room has two balconies but we only used the one that looks to the ocean. The pics I've included are from that balcony. All of the staff were very pleasant, there just seemed to be a shortage of them. When we needed extra towels it took a very long time because they didn't have enough staff. Only one person at the front desk most of the time. We were not fans of the breakfast but never are of continental breakfast so that was no surprise. Fake eggs and fake bacon just aren't our thing. However, we went in with managed expectations, this is definitely not a luxury resort so that's ok. There are plenty of close restaurants that are great. Our room also had a Murphy bed which was nice. My one major complaint is the state of the front balcony. It was awful! Concrete was all chipped and coming apart. Also, our balcony in the back didn't lock when we first arrived, that was fixed quickly though. All in all for what this is, it was amazing! We would absolutely return! Oh!! One last complaint, some of the local teens made use of the pool regularly which was rather annoying and the pool area could really use some updating and new chairs.

"Great value"

25/06/2017

Pros: Room with a great view, good value for the cost, friendly, accommodating staff (mostly), perfect sized room for our family, good breakfast, nice sized pool, good wi-fi Cons: lots of issues with housekeeping, issue with mold near the pool (cleaned up on our 3rd day) This place was exactly what we needed in terms of size and location. It's an older property and it looks its age. But it's clean, the staff is friendly and responsive and the location is great. I would definitely return.

We always love to stay at Best Western wherever we go. And this is by far one of the best one. The rooms were clean and spacious. The front lobby receptionist were very nice. And the breakfast was wonderful compared to others. The two people (Sorry I forgot their names) managing the dining were excellent. They kept the food stocked and the countertops clean. It was really sad that we have to leave. But we will be back again to the OBX to Best Western.

"Why Would You Stay Anywhere Else?"

It was a last minute decision. We didn't expect to visit let alone stay overnight in the Outer Banks. We were driving by the Best Western and my husband said, should we stay? Well, it's a road trip with no real plans so sure. What a delightful surprise! We met Mickey who warmly greeted us as soon as we walked in the door of the lobby. He was so welcoming and knowledge about the resort and surrounding area, we handed over our credit card willingly as soon as we heard a suite was available. The suite is gorgeous. Large living room with a Murphy bed that would sleep two, a pull out night stand with lamp, a sofa, large ottoman, two chairs, a dining table with four chairs and TV. It's all separated by a pocket door so you could easily sleep 4! There's a wet bar with full size refrigerator, coffee maker, microwave, sink. There's a granite topped sink outside of the bathroom and another sink, tiled tub/ shower area, toilet area and a lovely low-light mirror in the bathroom. The bedroom is another separate room with a large closet and another tv. The bed and it's sheets and blankets we're amongst the most comfortable we've ever slept on the couch except for home! The resort is right on the beach. A full hot breakfast is included each morning from 7-10am and the hot food selection changes slightly each day! Coffee, juices, pastries, youghert, fresh fruit, waffles, protein such as bacon or sausage, eggs scrambled and omlettes, sausage and biscuits with gravy...you see where we're going? Oh my. The two folks that take care of the breakfast room could not be nicer. They keep everything immaculate and pan full!name The only question we have is, why isn't this a Best Western Plus? We've stayed in BW Plus hotels that didn't come close to this quality. Why stay anywhere else? Thanks Mickey for not "letting us get away"! BTW? We stayed 3 nights!

Monta S, General Manager at Best Western Ocean Reef Suites, responded to this review
Dear Guest, Wow, we are so glad you decided to give us a try. we will be sure to share your comments with our staff. We hope you will visit again soon. Sincerely, Monta Steagall

Beautiful view of the ocean but if you like to see beach also stay on the 3rd floor or higher. Bed was the most comfortable bed I have ever slept in, did not want to get out of bed and that is definitely not me when there is a beach available.

A nice hotel on the beach. The luggage cart was a bit difficult to maneuver onto the curb and toward the elevator. There are elevators and stairs so it is fairly accessible. Upon entering the room we were so pleased! We discovered a small full size fridge, a microwave and a sink. There is a nice view of the ocean and the pool and hot tub. The beach is just steps away from the hotel. There are many amenities. In the living room area there is a MURPHY BED. I was so surprised! What a unique and great way to think outside of the box and accommodate more guests with a comfortable bed. So much nicer than a roll away. There is also a couch, 2 chairs, and a table with chairs in the living room, providing lots of seating to watch the big screen TV. Just off of the living room is a nice balcony to sit and look out over the ocean. The bathroom has a closed off sink, toilet with the shower. Outside of the door there is another sink, great for families. There were enough towels for our family of four. AND there was enough clearance between the bottom of the door and floor so it didn't bunch up the bath mat! Plus, there was a bathroom fan for ventilation. These little things are important to me. The bedroom has 2 Queen size beds with 4 pillows on each bed, 2 pillows for everyone! And if 4 pillows aren't enough there are 2 more in the closet. There is a CLEAN TV REMOTE in a slip that says fresh remote, peace of mind. And get this, there are 2 SUITCASE RACKS. 2! I have never experienced 2 suitcase racks! There has been everything I like in a hotel room and more.

This is second year we have chosen to stay at Best Western for our honeymoon and anniversary. We have already booked for our anniversary stay next June, 2018. We love the location at the Outer Banks and overall appearance of our Suite...love having the bedroom separate from the living area. Like having a full size refrigerator. Good value for all you get. Love having a great breakfast included with the room price. Food was delicious. Awesome view of the ocean and private balcony.

Booked The Best Western after canceling at another hotel down the street. So glad we did! The suite was very spacious and loved the fact that there were two bathroom sinks! The staff was great. Housekeeping did a nice job. Overall a nice comfortable place to stay and we will be back!

I was disappointed there wasn't a safe in the room. the breakfast eating area was a little small and the layout of the food was a little tight, you always felt like you were in someones way. just go at a less crowded time and you will be fine. The food was good. Hotel location is great! Staff is awesome

We enjoyed having a suite with three separate double beds. There was a large fridge and microwave, and the breakfast was great. Staff wereall friendly and helpful. My only complaint was the dim lighting at the mirrors.

07/06/2017

On first appearance was disappointed. It appeared the decor in the room was nice but just covering up old hotel. We didn't stay in room much obviously so it served our purpose of room and board. Doors slammed if neighbors not considerate. Very dirty behind trundle bed. Was nice to have 2 balconeys...one with ocean view and other off bedroom when I couldn't get pass trundle while it was down and occupied. Kitchette nice. Someone vomited in pool and they just cleaned with a net...Yuck. Best part was breakfast. TINY breakfast area but staff in there was BEST part of hotel. The gentleman who worked on there was a friend of Andy Griffith....

Best Western Ocean Reef Suites was a great place for my wife and I to stay following a conference in DC. The room was very quiet and the beds were comfortable. We really had more room than we needed - it made us think about bringing the kids and grandkids along - maybe next summer.

This is a great spot to stop for a few days. The hotel is clean, spacious, with a balcony view of the ocean. Good breakfast. We were able to see Roanoke Island, Fort Raleigh National Historic Site, Cape Hatteras Light Station, Jockey's Ridge State Park, Wright Brothers National Memorial. Do not miss Jeannette's Pier, both educational and scenic. This BW was convenient to everything.

Beautiful Oceanfront suite (Room 302), with AMAZING views. Over sized Suite was very bright and clean. Kitchen was an added bonus! Breakfast was loaded with selections. Staff were wonderful from check-in thru checkout! Will definitely be visiting again when OBX!

This place is awesome!!! Stay on a balcony suite if you can, the sound and view is superb. The hotel staff goes out of their way to help from the maintenance people to the cook to the front desk, everyone is nice and they actually help you when you ask. Great place and better people.

23/05/2017

I honestly had a lot of doubts but honestly a fantastic stay. I was wary of the website photos, I was wary of the outside appearance, but as soon as we were in the room, everything was phenomenal. The staff were all friendly to us throughout our stay, they have a great sanitation score, and all areas were maintained extremely well. The view of the ocean is ridiculous from the suites. We couldn't even see sand unless you were right up the the balcony, only a great water view If easily stay here again.

Thank you so much for taking care of my mother and I during Mother's Day weekend. We had a wonderful time and your employees made it that much easier! Amanda, Dan and Yolanda were the friendliest group I have encountered, and their kindness set this hotel apart from many I have stayed in. Room was gorgeous, perfectly laid out, big, and comfortable. Our view was great and I enjoyed having breakfast every morning and a fitness center to use. Great hotel!

Large suites with a great beach and view. The handicapped parking at the north end did not exist, but I sympathize with the with the cramped parking lot. The staff was outstanding. Much better than average breakfasts. The ocean view was so much better than expected.

Nice hotel. Little pricey for the area. Mostly a good experience. Staff was helpful and courteous. Location was good. Disappointed that the heated pool was not working as it was the main reason for our choice of this hotel. Also hadn't been inspected yet. I was told I could swim at my own risk, which I was a little taken aback by. Felt we should have been compensated or reduced rate.

Monta S, Manager at Best Western Ocean Reef Suites, responded to this review
Our Pool is actually season as most pools in the area unfortunately if we open early then we will also have to close early. We do hope that you will come stay with us when our pool is open. We do try to make every guests stay enjoyable. Also there is a YMCA in the area for a small price they do offer passes. Sorry that we could not have pool up for you at the time you were with us.

08/05/2017

We were in a corner suite with balconies on both the ocean side, and off the bedroom. The hotel is older, but the rooms were clean and comfortable. The views of the ocean and dunes were great. We wished that there were screens for the balcony doors so that we could have turned off the AC and opened the doors without letting in the bugs. We also enjoyed having a full-size refrigerator to go along with the microwave and "kitchen" sink. The breakfasts in the Monument Room were quite good, and the attendants were very friendly and did a nice job of refilling the food items.

Spur of the moment beach trip. Got room from hotwire rate $167 per night. (room was $250 on other sites). Got put on 2nd floor. Large sand dune view but still could see the ocean. Room very clean. We had a living room with couch, couple chairs, coffee table, round dining room table with 4 chairs in corner. Full kitchen, it looked very clean for a hotel kitchen. Minimal cooking utensils. Separate bedroom, had tv in living room & bedroom. Bedroom had a door so hubby could stay up at night & watch tv while I went to bed. Also pull down Murphy bed in the living room. All furniture dated. Overall, I liked the hotel. Great central location to see the sights.

We were vacationing in the Outer Banks and had stayed at this hotel in the past. The room/suite both times was very clean and comfortable and exceeded our expectations. The room amenities are great. tt's nice to have extra room so you don't feel cramped. Plus, we had a good view of the ocean! Friendly staff.

28/04/2017

We called the hotel directly, and we were told there were no rooms available. I went online to hotels.com and it stated there were rooms available. I booked the room directly through hotels.com. Within 5 minutes of my booking, I received a message on my cell from the man working the desk at the hotel. He stated that he was sorry, but he had sold the last room before my reservation came in. I contacted hotels.com. They called the hotel, and a room magically became available. The front desk clerk gave three different stories. Thankfully we ended up with a room. The breakfast staff was fabulous. They were so kind, and even had gluten free options. At check out we were charged once by hotels.com, and then the hotel also charged us for our room. I had to go back to the hotel after we checked out to try to get one of the charges removed. The man who didn't want to rent us a room, is the person who actually charged us twice.

Monta S, Manager at Best Western Ocean Reef Suites, responded to this review
Thank you for your feedback we do try our very best to make each guests stay enjoyable. We do apologize for the miscommunication. Cleaning people have no idea what clean means or how to correctly make a bed. Also when staying at a hotel you should not have a view of the hotels junk and broken furniture from your ocean front balcony.

We are sorry you did not enjoy your stay we do pride ourselves on customer service. We have had some remodeling done and have taken your suggestions to heart we hope you will give us another chance. So that we can make your next stay enjoyable.

24/04/2017

We came here for a brief stay on our way home from another trip. I was very pleased with the layout of the room. There was a bedroom with two double beds and then a double bed in the living room which pulled down from the wall (NOT the usual sofa-bed)! We had plenty of room. There was a 3/4 size refrigerator and microwave as well as 3 sinks (one in kitchen area, one outside the bathroom and one in the bathroom). The room was clean and fairly modern. The location is right on the beach with a nice view of the water. They do have a small outdoor pool as well. It's a hotel, not a resort, so it's perfect if you plan to be on the go most of the time like we were.

We had an oceanfront suite that was very nice. The kitchen was very clean and functional, the bathroom was clean and it was nice having the toilet and shower separate from a sink and mirror. We didn't need the hide away bed but it was nice to have just in case. The view was nice we stayed on the second floor so we couldn't see the sand over the dunes but we saw ocean and some waves crashing. The room was clean and the staff was friendly. We will definitely be staying here again.

This hotel is very nice, I understood it to have been renovated in the last 18 months from our stay there. Everything was excellent for the price! Would definitely stay there again! They only thing that disappointed us was that the pool was not clean or ready to be used. We came in late April, temps were in the high 70's and high 80's, the pool should have been available. I feel the hotel lacked on their service to get it up and running for the season.

Monta S, General Manager at BEST WESTERN Ocean Reef Suites, responded to this review
Dear Guest, Thank you for the review, we are pleased you liked the renovations. Regarding the pool, we are very sorry it was not open during your visit; our pool area generally opens mid-May. Sincerely, Monta Steagall

19/04/2017

I would give this hotel a "5" if there had not been quite a bit of dust on objects in the room. We were in room 202 that had a balcony facing the ocean. That in itself makes for a good location. It was quiet and peaceful. We especially enjoyed the setting of the breakfast room. It is called "The Monument Room," as it faces the Wright Brothers Monument a short distance away. The room is very cozy with a wall of windows. The food was average (good sausage links). The omelets were a bit cool. We would definitely stay here again.

Not the best experience by far. The shower curtain smelled like mild dew. No water pressure. Unable to receive clean towels until after 6:30. The pool was closed and the hot tube was green. Trash laying by the outside sheds. The staff was very nice.

We did a last minute family getaway. Our family has out grown a regular hotel room and this hotel was perfect, It was better then a regular hotel room - gave our family room to spread out. the Mini kitchen was good to keep drinks and snacks for the few days. We Liked the breakfast in the morning - nice variety- just enough to get you to lunch. My husband and son like the weight room. The weight room gave you just enough to keep in shape. Our view overlooked the pool and had a nice view of the ocean. The pool wasn't opened yet but it looked nice and seemed to have plenty of lounge chairs. The staff was very nice and helpful especially when we locked ourselves out of our room - that was fun.

The Best Western Ocean Reef was extremely clean and comfortable. It was quiet and felt very homey. Our suite was spacious and the view was incredible. Our breakfast was very tasty but you never know when the breakfast room would be packed because it is a small room. The fitness center had decent weight equipment but the treadmill was unusable due to the emergency stop button falling off. We got our exercise walking on the beach instead. The wifi was very weak and that made use for our family a little challenging. Overall, our stay was great and would stay at this hotel again!

15/04/2017

We came here for a weekend on the OBX and booked a room with a view on the Atlantic Ocean. When we checked in, the reception employees were quite friendly, suggested a restaurant for dinner and giving tips on area attractions. The room was amazing! It was on the top floor and had so much room! There was a separate living room with a sleeper sofa and a pull-down Murphy bed. Our beds were in an adjoining bedroom and they were very comfortable and clean. There was a good-sized kitchen area, and the bath had two rooms with bath sinks so one guest could get ready while another showered privately. The room and everything in it were spotless and functioned perfectly. One added bonus: from our room and the balcony we had a gorgeous view of the horizon when dawn broke. Both mornings we woke early and watched the sun rise over the Atlantic. Spectacular! The breakfast items were hot, fresh, tasty, and beautifully prepared and presented. The breakfast employees were professional and so friendly! They cheerfully greeted everyone as soon as they entered, and kept all the food and items well-stocked and the food area very clean. The only negative was the wifi. Many times it simply didn't function, so we had to turn it off and restart it. If the hotel could get that problem resolved, this place would be perfect. The next time we're on the OBX, we will certainly stay here.

This hotel has a great location and beach access. It is obvious from the check-in to the room condition that the building has undergone a cosmetic re-model. That does not cover up rust., mold, detached drywall, hollow core doors. I'd hope for more thorough upgrades before considering this hotel again. This hotel is not up to par with other Best Westerns that I have stayed in (although I am spoiled by the Hood River Inn in Oregon!)

22/11/2016

These are the best rooms....recently updated....separate bedroom and the living area is huge....a full size refrigerator. The bathrooms were spacious with a separate outside sink...all was very clean. It was odd that there were no pictures on any of the walls. Outside the rooms in the hallways were not as appealing...some sort of cart was left outside our room the whole 3 days. It had trash on it...I'm not sure why it was never moved. The beach was wide and beautiful.....the staff was helpful.

"Office closed and locked, waited 45 minutes"

1
16/11/2016

After being on the road for 36 hours and desperately needing a room, I selected this property from TripAdvisor based on the reviews and price. When I arrived there, I found the office to be closed and locked. Repeated phone calls to the property went unanswered. Bear in mind this was before 7 p.m. and a prime-time for check-in. I watched as others came and left in frustration. After 45 minutes, a young woman finally arrives opens the door and walked in, completely ignoring myself and the others that were still waiting. When I asked what was going on I was told she had been on a regular walk around and went out for lunch. This is completely against Hotel policy, which I later verified to be true. When I called to complain to the main line, the young lady accused me of lying about it and refused to rent me a room. So after waiting for almost an hour including the time I spent with her once she arrived, I had to drive further down and find another place to stay. Do to travel 40 guy was in no condition to be driving, but she adamantly refused to let me have her room. This is the worst customer service I have ever experienced in my entire life time, and I will never again be staying at ANY Best Western Property.

"Good Value"

Make sure that you know the difference between oceanfront and ocean view. The former shows you the sand dune the latter the actual ocean. Staff is good and accommodations are a pretty good value all things considered. The breakfast is pretty weak though.

I needed an escape for the everyday blues of home, so a friend and I headed for the Best Western Ocean Reef on the OBX of North Carolina...the hotel is wonderful, the staff are more like friends...they always make me feel special...Love this place and it has the ocean right out my front balcony...nothing could ever be better!!!

26/10/2016

So disappointed with this hotel only the breakfast , parking and view are worthy of a positive mention. The breakfast was better than in other Best Westerns I have stayed in other than Paris! However, the rooms were damp and smelled awful. The carpet was so wet in one room our friends had to move. The so called kitchen area did not have one piece of crockery ot silverware making it useless. Our room was not vacuumed as evidenced by the peeling ceiling paint chips left on the carpet. Our friend's room was not serviced at all on one day.The corridors were not swept at all during our stay, I expect the beer bottle tops are still there! On check out there was a problem with the bill which was not satisfactorily dealt with.

02/10/2016

Most disappointed with this property and the lack of focus on customer service. The first room was quite worn and the toilet would not flush. After a less than pleasant experience with the desk clerk, were moved to another room that was in better condition but still sub par in housekeeping and finding a roach on the drapes when closing them in the bedroom for the evening, certainly did not gain any points. The lighting in the vanity are was poor and the towels were quite worn. This was the first experience at a Best Western property and will be the last.

"bad housekeeping, won't go again"

01/10/2016

The beds were very sloppy one day and only one bed made another day. Pillows were left on the floor. garbage not picked up. towels not replaced. Very dissatisfied with the house keeping and never complained about a Best Western before and that's the hotel we always use.

We stayed on the lower level, but no problem...just step outside and over the dune and we were on the beach. Clean room, nice layout of the suite, friendly staff and amazing breakfast for the price. I would go back tomorrow! Centrally located to most tourist attractions. Has all you need for a wonderful trip.

This is one of the nicest Best Western I have stayed out: the room is really nice. The front office staff: Amy was rude. Gale was nicer and seemed to understand the meaning of customer service. Unfortunately, this hotel experience a hurricane one week prior to our visit and when we went to our room there was an overwhelming smell of cat urine. We talked with Gale who explained that rain from the storm came into the room and mixed with the carpet fibers creating a horrible stench: 60 % of the rooms had water damage. We were offered a different room and the smell was not as bad: still woke at 1am from a horrible sinus headache: it is unfortunate because this is a really nice place but until they get this issue resolved if you are sensitive to smells I wouldn't stay here. The rooms are very nice: you walk into a nice kitchen and a separate king size bedroom and separate living area with a balcony over the beach (or pool and beach). It is direct oceanfront. There is a complimentary very nice breakfast that is in a room on each floor so it doesn't get crowded : great idea. The breakfast is 7-10. The outdoor pool open until 9pm. The beach is great. Plenty of free parking. Free WiFi. Nice room darkening shades. Housekeeping did a okay job: one recommendation: when the bath towels are turning gray it is time to replace them. There was a bleach type odor to the towels and to the bedding as well. This hotel is nice with a great location it just unfortunate that their issues that could affect the health of their customers. I would be proactive in getting a nice smelling room.

I booked an ocean view room. There is a difference between ocean view and ocean front (ground floor, sand dune view). This was my case. Fortunately, the clerk had compassion and moved me from room 104 to 304 the second night. Call the hotel to make sure where you're staying. You have to be at least on the second floor to see the ocean. The living room is spacious, kitchenette perfect (fridge/microwave), bedroom has two beds, bathroom has a sink and then another inside the shower/toilet room. My niece had her two small children so the Murphy bed in the living room was perfect for them. Balcony has two plastic chairs and short little table for drinks. Breakfast had many choices: scrambled or hard-boiled eggs, sausage or bacon, cereal, rolls, yogurt, fruit, etc. Nice view of the Wright Brothers Memorial--which is barely a mile away. Captain George's seafood buffet is less than two miles away. The beach is right over the sand dunes and there are walkways from the hotel. Great experience!

Really disappointing. The sweet receptionist was ALONE on duty at our 5 pm check in. The hall outside our room was a disaster zone with dirty linen piles, FOUR cleaning carts, cardboard boxes and huge barrels of CLEANING FLUIDS left standing for the night partially blocking the hall. If the local fire marshall had dropped by, this hotel would have gotten a TICKET. I had to take photos and show them to the poor receptionist before she could get the manager to react. The room was NOT much better: broken lock on the sliding door which could NOT be shut all the way, cigarette burn holes on the furniture, substandard air conditioning which could not be adjusted. The reconstitued powdered eggs at breakfast were nasty. The bright spot was the VERY NICE staff in the too-small breakfast room.

If you are looking for a very nice place to stay this would be the one to go and stay. I will go back again because of the staff members are friendly and very helpful. I would also take my family there. You are right at the beach.

19/09/2016

The Rooms were very up to date. Nice kitchen with large refrigerator. The breakfast and the nice older people who took care of the breakfast area were super. Nice and clean. Could use some new furniture on the patio. Convenient to a nice deli across the street. We had fresh sandwiches made there everyday. Easy access to beach. Didn't use the pool. Right next to the life guard station. I would book this place again.

my trip to the Kill Devil Hills, NC Best Western Ocean Reef is always the highlight of my vacation...I try to get as many chances to go there as possible. Wouldn't ever stay anywhere else!!!...The hotel is beautiful and right on the beach...always get an ocean front room...watch the ocean for hours and love every minute of my stay!!!

We have stayed here multiple times and any time there is an issue it is resolved promptly and professionally. This is now our go to hotel when staying on the Outer Banks. Each morning there are breakfast options if you don't want to go out to eat. The beds are so comfortable and the rooms are always clean.

"All Ocean Front Rooms Do Not Have Ocean View"

14/09/2016

I go to the beach for a night to have dinner with my Mom and I pay extra to get an ocean front room with a request for the highest room available...... I got Ocean front at the higher price on the 1st floor with a view of the sand dune...... You would think they might mention that this over priced ocean front room had no view of the ocean..... Best Western you are DEAD to me......

"Simple Outer Banks Visit"

14/09/2016

This hotel has great space in the rooms and the updates were in just the right places, like the bathroom. The beds and TV's were comfortable enough for a simple family vacation. The breakfast was great, but housekeeping was a little slack. The pool area and walk to the beach were very simple and allowed our 10 year olds and 6 year old some independence while being easily monitored.

13/09/2016

Found this hotel last minute....we had a suite on the first floor that overlooked the pool. The suite was large and clean. I feel their overpriced for the rooms...hallway extremely small. building needs maintenance on the outside. The staff was excellent....Felt bad for the receptionist, as she was alone...The breakfast was very good and the staff there was terrific and greeted each guest....They knew their job very well....Wouldn't go back due to overpricing for what you get.

"We love Ocean Reef!"

13/09/2016

we have stayed with Ocean Reef many times over the past 38 years of going to the Outer Banks. Last year they did rennovations and updated the rooms. We love staying there. It is a very central location in the Outer Banks. Close to good restaurants and a very nice beach area

"Disappointing "

08/09/2016

We stayed here for two days in early September. The suite was nice and roomy and in good repair but the general state of the hotel is a bit shabby, especially the elevators. The room was clean and neat when we arrived but the housekeeper did a lousy job of cleaning the next day, not even bothering to rinse out the coffee I had poured into the kitchenette sink. The bed linens and bath towels are dingy and worn and the bed sagged. For two days it was tolerable but for a week I would go elsewhere.

I am very sorry to hear of the troubles you encountered during your stay. This is not normal for us, however we did just have a Tropical Storm come through our area. Hope you will give us another try.

08/09/2016

Overall a decent hotel. Nothing too fancy and the rooms are slightly dated. Slightly overpriced due to labor day weekend, may be more worth the while if booked in during the off season. Advantage of the hotel is that it is next to the beach.

We are a group of 12 on m'cycles. We have stayed in nice places, decent places and bad places. This is a bad place right now due to smell. They said all rooms took water and they all smell bad. We are going from room to room smelling and looking for mold. Im not even sure if they should be open, legally or just plain decency

Carrie C, General Manager at BEST WESTERN Ocean Reef Suites, responded to this review
Sorry you had issues with your stay, we just had a Tropical Storm come through the area and yes we had water enter the rooms. However all carpet has been cleaned by a professional there is no mold.

"Last minute change of plans"

06/09/2016

My family and I had booked another hotel because our regular place was booked. With the storm over Labor Day weekend, the hotel we were booked with called us mere hours before check in to tell us our room had been damaged. We were arriving on the Outer Banks from a 6 hour drive to find out we had nowhere to stay. We drove out to this hotel and we were delighted they had a ocean view room available. If you are accustomed to small rooms at the beach, this place is much roomer for a family to be able to spread out some. The room was on the 5th floor and had taken some water, but that was totally understandable due to the horrible storm. Glad we had a great weekend!

Carrie C, General Manager at BEST WESTERN Ocean Reef Suites, responded to this review
Thank you for the nice review!! We are so happy that we could help you out and hopefully this will be your new hotel of choice. Again we are happy you enjoyed your stay and thanks for understanding the water in the rooms sure wish everyone would.

Very nice hotel, with two rooms, separate bathroom and a great ocean view. We had a nice stay. Few steps away from the beach, very convenient and easy access. Nice breakfast with a lot of choices and from what we have heard they change it a little every day to make more interesting.

"Decent ocean front hotel, comfortable for family of 5"

4
03/09/2016

Our family of 5 stayed here for 2 nights before getting into our beach house. PROS: It was nice being so close to the beach, the AC worked great and the rooms were comfortable. I liked the Murphy bed in the living room which allowed more space during the daytime. We had ocean view room that overlooked the pool from the 3rd floor, though it wasn't the greatest view, it was nice to catch a glimpse of the ocean. CONS: I was not happy with the cleanliness of the room. There was thick dust on the shelf in the bathroom which is where they kept the towels (gross!) The pool was nice but didn't open until 10:00 am. They had a 2 night minimum and it would have been better for us to just stay one night. I didn't sleep well because the walls were thin and I heard loud noises and carrying on outside our room all night. We had to call multiple times asking for more towels and when they finally came, the person knocked loudly and incessantly on our door for the full 10 seconds it took us to answer which seemed unnecessary and rude. This place was fine but we will look for somewhere else to stay next year.

great hotel but pool and fitness room need to open at 7am, not 10am. check out is at 11am and 10am gives no time to swim or exercise. Really good location and access to the beach was perfect. The pool was really nice and clean, but needs to open earlier in the morning.

28/08/2016

Aug. 2016, Not close to being luxury accommodations. I guess it's basically what you would expect for a "beach hotel", well used. Felt like it had been patched & painted to make it feel newer. It may have just been the actual color of the towels, but they had an off-white look to them which was a little off putting. AC unit was loud.

Carrie C, General Manager at BEST WESTERN Ocean Reef Suites, responded to this review
Thank you for the review, we do hope you enjoyed your stay. The salt air does take a toll on things in the area, however we do try and keep everything up and clean.

"One of the OBX nicer hotels"

4
27/08/2016

The hotel was renovated a couple of years ago and it is one of the nicer places to stay on the OBX with updated furniture and finishes. The rooms are all suites and have kitchenettes, however they chose to remove the stoves during the renovations. The location is great very central to everything. The beach is pretty wide and nice as well. The hotel is generally pretty quiet and it's easy to get a good nights sleep.

Carrie C, General Manager at BEST WESTERN Ocean Reef Suites, responded to this review
Thank you for the nice review. We are happy you enjoyed your stay and hope you return soon for another visit.

Not the cleanest we have stayed in, but also not the dirtiest. Things like windows and doors need to be cleaned. Bathrooms and the rest of the room were clean. The continental breakfast had something for everyone although the room could have been larger. Location is good.

"6 people in a suite"

22/08/2016

Very clean, breakfast is good (would be better to have the waffle maker somewhere else - a long line for it that backed up all others). We had 6 people in the room and with the Murphy bed there was plenty of room. The mattress for the Murphy bed was pretty lumpy. Would love to see the pool open later (closed at 930). We have been here in the past love the remodeled rooms and the larger fridge. The front desk was very helpful. Parking could be a problem in the busy part of the season but we had 3 vehicles and had no problems. The AC unit vents onto the balcony making it extra warm and loud when sitting outside. We have been here many times in the past and will continue to return to this hotel. A great option - right on the beach, an actual suite a warm pool.

Carrie C, General Manager at BEST WESTERN Ocean Reef Suites, responded to this review
Wow, thank you for the great review. I wish we could keep the pool open longer, however it is a new law that we have to close soon. We love having our guests return and see what new at the hotel. Can't wait to see you again soon.

22/08/2016

We had several rooms booked for my daughter's wedding. From the first telephone call to Gail to book our stay to the point when we checked out was trouble free. Our experience there made the this special moment for our family even more special. Each and every member of the Best Western staff from Housekeeping to Maintenance to Front Desk went out of their way to see that we were all taken care of. The biggest Thank-You I can offer is this review and my endorsement will hopefully encourage anyone staying in Kill Devil Hills to consider this location.

22/08/2016

Expensive for the quality of the hotel. However, it is located in a resort area and your are trapped by that environment. The area is very nice to visit and there is lots to see and do. Motel has good access to the beach and all the surrounding amenties for tourist.

"Pricey for an average hotel"

3
21/08/2016

Nice views. We were 4th floor ocean view. Great central location. Breakfast was good (hot and variety!) and the servers were very nice. Hotel is well worn and could use a renovation. Pool was not bad, hot tub was basically a large outdoor bath tub. Fitness room tiny with a one-person-at-a-time bathroom. Spa? Nope...that is a mistake. Beds were comfortable enough. Didn't try the Murphy bed. Blankets and bedspreads were very worn. Sheets and towels were typically thin. Best part was a full refrigerator and microwave in the room. Average rating because there are few hotels at OBX that I'd give much higher than that. And plenty I'd give a much lower rating.

"Hmmmm......"

21/08/2016

We stayed at this hotel ten years ago and had a good experience and seeing online that they recently updated their rooms I decided to visit the outer banks again and stay here. I don't normally give bad reviews but I can't let this one go. The rooms are updated and perfectly set oceanfront but.......our first day we were stuck in the elevator with another family for quite a few moments. I had to call the front desk on my cell phone and inform them we were stuck on the elevator on the first floor. We pushed all the buttons and finally the elevator took us to another floor and let us out. After that a sign was placed on the elevator door saying it was out of order. Good thing there was another working elevator everyone could use until it was fixed later the next day. On our third day there we had been out all day sight seeing and returned to our room around five expecting housekeeping to have been there to leave fresh towels. I called the front desk asking for towels and they expressed that the dryer was broken and needed a part and the laundry boy was doing his best to keep up and would deliver towels later that night. We had our towels delivered around eight. House keeping overall only emptied our garbage and exchanged towels daily as part of their routine. Not acceptable.

3 night stay in August with 2 girls 4 & 5 yrs old. Nice price since you get the suite. We priced out many places but they were the same price with the standard 2 doubles. Our kids sleep much nicer in their own beds in hotels so they took the bedroom and we took the murphy. GREAT: Suite, Murphy Bed, Breakfast staff (hardest workers at the hotel! Breakfast room is a little cramped but they stay on top keeping things fresh and clean), easy walk to the beach (we were 2nd floor so one flight of stairs down and around the corner and we were on the walkway to go over the dune. GOOD: Pool worked good, kids loved it was never too busy for a quick after dinner dip which the kids loved. Breakfast food solid. Eggs and sausage one day, French toast and sausage the next and 2 waffle makers. Location is good. Wright Brothers on the other side of 158, so easy to get to all Kill Devil and Nags Head fun. Quiet, even though we were on the 2nd floor over looking the pool you didnt hear a thing. BAD: House cleaning. During our 3 night stay so 2 cleanings. 1st cleaning - they gave us new towels, nothing done to beds or living area. 2nd cleaning - even less, took garbage. Took dirty towels. Gave us 1 new towel sorta folded on the sink. No bath mat though. Didn't vacuum for sure. We spilled some chips so there was a spot of crushed dust, totally left in touched. If we were staying another day we would complain but what's the use. Sliding glass door was so hard to open and close. Made it not worth it to go in and out too often. OVERALL Would recommend and come again after a quick shopping around.

"OBX Summer Vacation 2016"

5
17/08/2016

This year we spent our annual August holiday in The Outer Banks of North Carolina and stayed at the Best Western Ocean Reef Suites. The decision was the best one. The hotel was super clean, updated and modernized with its chic decor and room amenities while maintaining the integrity of its surroundings. The manager, staff and maid services were as pleasant, supportive and courteous as could be. Southern hospitality on display front and center. The breakfast was well executed and food was perfect for our family of four. Even the coffee was as I like. The pool and jacuzzi were exceptionally clean and so was the pool area. Of course, the beach was everything I had read about in The OBX and Ocean Reef was right over the dunes. I would not hesitate to use this property again as it was a great value and a lot was provided in return. It was also in relative proximity to outstanding restaurants and evening attractions. 13/08/2016

I stayed here in June 2016. I was very surprised it was nice. The room was fantastic. I stayed in the ocean view room. I was very impressed with Best Western. Breakfast was good too! They should have it in a larger room or more than one...its somewhat confusing to find.

"Great location and spacious suites!"

5
08/08/2016

We stayed here for a week on our family vacation. Had read about the difference between "oceanfront" and "oceanview" before booking, so we reserved a "poolside/partial oceanview" suite which was just as advertised and perfect. You can't beat the location of the hotel and its amenities - steps from the beach, large pool with outside showers to rinse off, complimentary breakfast with both hot and cold selections, and ample-sized suites that allow you to spread out, store food in the large fridge, and hang out on the balcony enjoying the views. Staff was helpful and happy to assist, and location was nice and central to all the Outer Banks have to offer. Would definitely stay here again.

The staff/Best Western was not accommodating. They refused to give my daughter and her family the same rate that she already had a reservation for the next night. They quoted a ridiculuous price of over $500. Comfort Inn accommodated her family that night for a price of $173 + tax

"Right on the beach, great room and view"

06/08/2016

Every room is a suite with a view. Breakfast is taken care of and you are right on the beach. It is also centrally located to everywhere on the OBX. the rooms are comfortable and the view is amazing. Black pelican flew by us at eye level all day. I even got to sit in the airconditioning and take pics of the kids swimming.

"Nice clean place - helped us out."

4
06/08/2016

We booked an OCEANFRONT Room but when we chacked in it was a view of the dunes - no oceanview. We were very unhappy but they did accommodate us. They gave us a partial room view on the 5th floor. We were very grateful to them!!!! They were nice about it. So, when booking and you want to see the ocean remember to check for OCEANVIEW. Other than that the breakfast were great - a wide variety. The only thing is it is a small area but we were always able to find a seat there. Rooms were clean and the suite is very big I thought. My son slept on the murphy bed in the suites living area and loved it. He had his own space (pre-teen). The beds are double beds so if you are used to a king bed it may be small for you and a partner. The staff is very nice and helpful. Again, the front desk were very accommodating to us. I was also impressed by the breakfast servers. They never let anything run out on during breakfast. We were happy with out stay and would stay there again. I would recommend this hotel.

"Exceeded Expectations"

5
06/08/2016

I stayed at the Best Western Ocean Reef Suites for four nights in August with my husband and two children (ages 14 and 7). We were very happy with the hotel. Our room (403) was on the fourth floor. The suite had a good sized separate bedroom with two double beds, a closet and dresser. There was also a very large living room area with a double sized murphy bed, a sofa, two comfy chairs, ottoman and a dining table with four dining chairs. There was a tv in the bedroom and in the main room. The room also had two bathroom areas, a sink, mirror and full closet on one side and a shower, toilet, sink and mirror on the other. These spaces were separated by a door. There was also a microwave and larger than average fridge. I was very impressed by the amount of space and storage in the room. It was nice for our family to be able to spread out and not be on top of eachother. The room also has a sliding glass door that opened onto a nice sized deck. The deck area overlooked the small dune behind the hotel, the beach and the ocean beyond. The deck looked to the east and so we were able to get up and watch the sun rise over the water in the morning from our very own balcony. The hotel reminded me of the classic beach motels that I went to as a child. It was not fancy. The accomodations are not 5 star luxury in nature. I gave my five star review because the room was huge, it was kept very clean and the location and view are amazing. The hotel has an outdoor pool and hot tub. We did not use the hot tub but did enjoy the pool, which was clean and well maintained. The hotel also has beach access. The walk to the beach is very short, really just steps away. The beach itself is well maintained and the sand both on the shore and in the water is clean. No issue with rocks, shells or seaweed. There is also a lifeguard station right next door. The surf was not an issue for two of the days we were there. We were all able to go into the water and bob up and down in the waves. The other two days, however, only my 14 year old son was brave enough to go out. The rest of us stayed at the water's edge and let the surf hit before we touched it. That was when we used the hotel's pool so that my 7 year old could swim. At night people take flashlights out to the beach to look for crabs. The hotel does not provide chairs or umbrellas. We brought ours from home. We also brought beach towels, but I did notice that the hotel will provide towels for the pool. The hotel also had included in the price a better than average breakfast. There was the typical cereal, pastry and waffle maker. Each morning, however, the hotel also had a breakfast meat (sausage or bacon) and another warm entre such as French toast or eggs. This was our first time to the Outer Banks and we liked the Kill Devil Hills location. There were a number of good restaurants near by and we seemed central to many of the attractions we wanted to enjoy. The area which might be improved in my opinion was the Wi-Fi, which we connected to but which seemed to kick us off regularly. Ultimately, we really fell in love with our Outer Banks experience and were very happy we chose to stay at Best Western Ocean Reef Suites.

"Right on the Beach - Wonderful Place"

06/08/2016

This is a well run property with an extensive breakfast included. Kind, caring staff. We had a suite - included a full size fridge, wet bar, microwave. Living room has a Murphy Bed in it - balcony overlooking the ocean right off of it. Bedroom had 2 double beds. Just a wonderful property to relax and enjoy - a couple of blocks away from the Wright Memorial and Museum.

"Lovely"

02/08/2016

Though hotel stay was excellent, the price was on higher side. I had taken ocean view room and room balcony had awesome view of beach. The floor had ice-machine. The breakfast was good (omelette, sausages, bread, juices, fruits, coffee, pan cakes etc.)

"Poor front desk service"

2
31/07/2016

We had issues with the TV, no service half of our stay, and no internet service for 2 days, and feel the front desk was too young and inexperienced to handle the complaints and felt that all they could was apologize and go back to thumbing through the magazines they were looking at even after we asked for a maintenance staff member to help and investigate the problems.

"Great Value / Free Breakfast Exceeded Expectations"

5
29/07/2016

Beautiful views and close beach access; good value for the money. Our family of 4 enjoyed our stay very much. The murphy bed was very handy. Free breakfast exceeded our expectations. The breakfast area is cramped but manageable. The breakfast staff did a wonderful job and were friendly. Front desk/check-in clerk not so friendly but got the job done and gave us suggestions for restaurants. Housekeeping was adequate. We did ask for extra towels which were promptly supplied. We asked for an extra blanket on the murphy bed which was never supplied but we managed just fine. We stayed on the 5th floor. Very quiet which we appreciated. Pool was nice and clean. We did not use the hot tub which had a faint green tinge to it. Doors could have more secure locks but we still felt safe. Plenty of free parking. I could on about small details but the bottom line is that this is a GREAT VALUE for the money and the FREE BREAKFAST BETTER THAN USUAL. You can't go wrong here if you're looking to save a few bucks to have it to spend on family activities instead. We would return again. One suggestions would be for a small tiki bar of smoothies/sno cones/ice cream etc. be sold at the pool area (there's money to be made there for sure).

"Great location but overpriced!!!"

3
27/07/2016

We were so disappointed with this hotel! It has been updated recently, but it was really expensive for the value. The breakfast area was really tiny, and the front desk staff was not friendly. We felt like we were bothering the staff every time we asked for help. The view was great but not worth the price.

"Location, location, location - right on the beach"

4
23/07/2016

There's not much that can compare to having an ocean view room, opening up the patio door and watching the sunrise in your jammies. I'm giving the hotel 4 bubbles just for that! If it weren't on the beach, I'd be giving this hotel a pretty tough review, for overall the room quality is below average for a 3* hotel. For the price we paid in peak season, we could have had a room in an upscale 4* hotel almost anywhere else in the country. Time and salt air have not been kind to this hotel, and although our room had an updated kitchen, the rest of the hotel could use a refresh. Staff were all very friendly and helpful, and breakfast was good. And there's nothing that compares to being right on the beach. There's a lifeguard station on the beach more-or-less right in front of the hotel, so you basically walk out of the hotel and you're in a great spot on the beach.

Carrie C, General Manager at BEST WESTERN Ocean Reef Suites, responded to this review
Thank you for the nice review. I'm happy to hear you enjoyed your stay and don't forget if you have photos of the sunrise post them for us to enjoy as well. Hope to see you again soon.

"Updates"

21/07/2016

Rooms are updated since our last stay. Suite style room felt spacious and comfortable. Beach access is convenient and a lifeguard is closely. Outdoor pool was awesome after time at the beach (outdoor shower is present to rinse off first). Please fix the bathtub plug so it can be closed for a bath. This was problematic for traveling with young children.

We had never been to the Outer Banks so visited AAA for advice. After reviewing our options, I chose the Best Western Ocean Reef Suites and am glad I did. Excellent location and well worth the price. The staff are helpful and respond to requests and needs. The pool and beach are excellent. There are many good restaurants and bars within close proximity.

Very well maintained property in perfect location! Suite we had was very big, well appointed and awesome view. Pool was nice and employees went out of there way to help us check-out but let us leave our car parked stay at the beach.

Noticeable improvements in the Wi-Fi support, but also in the modeling of the rooms. Terrific staff. I have always enjoyed this hotel for it's central location to major OBX attractions but more importantly their spacious rooms. Keep it going!!!!

"A Hotel That Doesn't Care About Their Guests"

1
06/07/2016

To Whom It May Concern: I recently stayed at Best Western in Kill Devil Hills on Saturday July 2nd thru July 4th. My fiance' and I arrived at 8:30am and walked into the front desk letting them know "I know we may not be able to check-in but wanted to let you know we are here so if we could check in early that would be great!" The front desk agent literally shook her head stating, "No" She didn't even look in the system to see if we would be able to check-in. I explained to the same front desk agent that I am in the hospitality industry myself so I didn't think we would be able to check in now however, but would like to check in early. I also asked her if we could be on the same floor as our friends but we didn't need to be next to them because I knew that could be more difficult then getting us on the same floor. Again, WITHOUT looking she said, "No, I can't!" I asked, "Why aren't you able too?" She said, "We don't have any rooms available!" I said, "You don't have rooms available? So, you can't move someone from the 2nd floor (which is where she had blocked me) to the fifth floor (which is where my friends were blocked)?" She again said, "No!" I took a business card and left! I sat in my car and contact the hotel. I asked to be transferred to a manger once the front desk agent answered. I spoke with a manager about my issue and her response was "The reason we can't get you all on the same floor is because you all booked 'ocean view' and the other party booked 'ocean front.'" I explained to the manager that if I was told that verses being told a straight "NO" then I wouldn't have called her. The manger then proceeds to tell me "The agent is fairly new and has only been with us for about a week now!" The manager grabbed my cell phone number and was to notify me when I could check in which I thought she would try and get me in early by grabbing this information but I was wrong. SUGGESTION: If you have a new employee make them have an "in training" ribbon to wear with the name badge OR make sure another trained agent is at the desk with them so ALL the information can be explained to the guest verses being told straight, "NO!" At about 10:59am my fiance' Leo went to the desk before we headed to the pool to see the status of us checking in early. We were told by the SAME front desk agent that the guest in our room hasn't checked out yet. Okay, it was 10:59am....check out is at 11am and it's a holiday weekend and your telling me they haven't checked out yet which also means you have me BLOCKED in room and you are REFUSING to move me rooms so I could check in early and make a HAPPY guest. At about 1pm, my fiance' calls from the pool area and speaks with Gail about us checking in. Again, we arrived at 8:30am, housekeepers arrived at 9am (we watched them from my car in the parking lot walk in), check out was at 11am and it's now 1pm and we still CAN'T check-in. I get that check-in isn't until 4pm however, I also know we weren't the only guest who were trying to check-in early. I also know that it is POSSIBLE to get guest in early because I have done it at my hotel. I also know that out of the WHOLE hotel there isn't just ONE of the rooms that I booked! After my fiance' spoke with Gail, I chose to speak with the General Manager Carrie who was RUDE! She basically told me because I am familiar with the industry that I should know what to expect! Um no, because in my hotel we CARE about our guest and we get them in early!! It's not HARD, as long as you have an excellent staff, as long as management stays on top of it and as long as there is communication involved! I wasn't asking to be checked in at 8:30am but by 1pm I was expected to be checked in. After speaking with Carrie and getting no where with her I called Best Western Customer Care 1:18pm. I spoke with Jay from the customer care department. I explained my situation with him, he contacted the hotel and told me that our room would be ready by 2pm. I thanked him and went back to try and enjoy my day. At 2:10pm my room was still NOT ready!! So, customer care who is supposed to help resolve problems told me my room would be ready at 2pm and it still wasn't ready!! SERIOUSLY!! It' get worse, at about 2:15pm-2:30pm my friends who were on the 5th floor there room was READY and they were able to check in!! Keep in mind they didn't arrive until 11:30am. I get back on the phone with customer care and spoke with Wyatt but asked to be transferred to a customer care supervisor which was Amy. She contacted the hotel which was told that our room would be ready by 3pm now!! So basically 2 hours from when I called customer care the first time. While I was on the phone with customer care, the hotel called me to tell me my room was ready! About Time!! After speaking with Amy, she told me that she would have someone from management give me a call. Here we are 07/06/2016 at 10:53am and STILL HAVEN'T received a phone call from management. Also, while we were checking in we saw 5 other families checking in as well and housekeepers were leaving at 3:30pm which goes to show that we could have checked in early. OUR STAY: We got into our hotel room (room 206) and the closest door handle came off as soon as we opened it, the towels were yellow (they shouldn't have been in the room period looking like that) and the light in the living room next to the pull out didn't work. The room we were in was the SAME EXACT room that my friends were in on the 5th floor (room 511) and the same EXACT room that their parents were on the 2nd floor (room 213). As far as the "view" goes they ALL faced the beach the ONLY difference was room 213 and room 511 you could see the pool and the beach but my room you could ONLY see the beach therefore, I am not sure why we couldn't be on the same floor. Saturday night 07/02/2016 at about 9:30pm we were locked out of our room completely. The key card would turn green but the door wouldn't open. I tried twice before approaching the front desk because I didn't think it could be the lock-that normally turns two colors if it's the battery-but it was turning green. We still couldn't get it open so we went to the front desk which is where we met Krystal or Crystal either way she was AWESOME!! We explained our situation to her and without hesitation she got up, locked the front desk doors and walked up with us. She tried the door, saw it turn green and tried to push it open but she couldn't get it either. She went to get a screw driver to try and undo the lock but she thought the screw was stripped so after about 10 minutes of trying to got up and said, "I may need to call my maintenance man in but lets try it again."We stuck the key in and this time we were able to get in." THANKS KRYSTAL (CRYSTAL) for your EXCELLENT SERVICE!! Sunday 07/03/2016; my fiance' still had issues getting in the room this afternoon we went to the front desk and spoke with the same agent we spoke with when we arrived. We explained the issue and explained our "Do Not Disturb sign" was on but the maintenance guy can go in there if need be. We returned back to the room with NO SIGN of the maintenance guy being in there. There wasn't a note left from the maintenance guy and no phone call from the front desk making sure it was resolved. So, as far as I am concerned maintenance never went in our room. SUGGESTION: When there is an issue like there was on Saturday where a guest locked out of their room MANAGEMENT should still contact the guest the next day to apologize even if it was resolved. We DIDN'T get a phone call or anything. SUGGESTION: When their is an issue and maintenance is requested to enter a room or look at a room from the outside have them leave a note stating that it is fixed or have the front desk call the room to make sure it was resolved! FOLLOW UP with the guest means more to the guest then you will ever know because it shows that you as a hotel care!! Today, I spoke with Mike from Customer Care because I still haven't received a call from Management like I was told from Amy on 07/02/2016. I'm not only writing an email to complain but also provided suggestions as well. All in all, management needs to be looked at. The ONLY good thing that is going on with the staff is Krystal (Crystal) who gave me some "hope" with getting things resolved. She actually showed she cared and made the effort to go the extra mile to get us in our room. Other than that my stay was HORRIBLE and I wouldn't reccomand this hotel to ANYONE!! Yours Sincerely, Alexis

Although the hotel room was a little dated, it was clean and well maintained. We chose the pool side room which was easy access to the beach and pool. It was a suite- a separate bedroom along with a Murphy bed in the main room had plenty of room for our family of five. Kitchen area had a full size, sink, and fridge but does not have cooking utensils (and not a stovetop). Laundry facilities are on 3rd floor and were clean and easy to use. The breakfast varied daily and the employees did a fantastic job of keeping it stocked and cleaned. Only issue with the breakfast area was that it was very small and difficult to navigate because very crowded. We really enjoyed this location and are making plans to return next summer!

28/06/2016

The location of the hotel is great and right on the beach. The breakfast was fantastic and so were the breakfast hosts. We encountered several unfriendly staff at the front desk. They seemed bothered with questions that we had. The rooms have been updated and clean. The rest of the hotel needs to be updated.

We were very happy with this motel. The rooms were clean and comfortable. The breakfast featured warm eggs and bacon plus continental offerings. It was quite good. Desk, dining and cleaning personnel were all helpful. We'll definitely return.

25/06/2016

As a family of five, we were looking for a nice kitchen during our stay. Our room had a good-sized fridge, microwave, and additional kitchen sink which were wonderful (while it didn't have a stove top, we were able to do without). The cleaning service was great. When we asked for extra towels we got them without problems. There was a good-sized laundry which we used often. The location was excellent, we were right on the beach so that we didn't use the pool once during our stay but instead were able to fully enjoy the sea. Overall excellent experience and I would highly recommend this hotel!

"Great central place right on beach"

21/06/2016

Rooms are nice, but outside of the hotel is dated. Probably built in mid 1980's. Direct access to the beach. Heated pool and hot tub as well. Free breakfast in mornings. Chairs on beach are not free, they charge you for them.

"Great beach front hotel"

Great location, right on the beach, even offer a shower to rinse off after a day at the beach right by the pool. Really good breakfast & good choices. Lots of restaurants nearby. Wright Brothers monument is close by. Staff is very friendly and helpful. Rooms are very comfy, beds were great.

The hotel layout worked great for our family. It was convenient to a lot of other things to do in and around the Outer Banks. Right on the beach and it had a nice pool too. Laundry room was convenient also.

16/06/2016

First, I have to be really thankful that the hotel let us check in super early after a five hour trip on Friday so that alone gives them high marks in my book. We've stayed elsewhere in the Outer Banks and the other properties stuck to their 4pm check in. Getting to check in early at the Best Western gave us almost half a day at the pool which was a great way to start a vacation. I reserved a partial ocean view room with a view of the pool and sure, while it wasn't a total ocean view it was still completely adequate and I was able to watch the dolphins frolicking in front of our room on two days. The room itself was a little strange. There was a couch, dining area and a Pullman bed in the wall in the front part of the room by the balcony and the bedroom was immediately on the left when you entered with a window facing the parking lot. I was a little disappointed that I wouldn't be able to hear the ocean from my bed but there is no screen door on the balcony so I don't know if I would have left it open anyway. The room was a little dark and dreary by the bedroom and bathroom and, in general, the room seemed to have a half updated/half not kind of feel to it. It felt dated but the bathroom clearly had been redone because it was much more modern than some of the furniture in the "living room." It was clean, however, and that's always a huge plus in my book. The parking in the front of the hotel was ample and the hotel is very convenient to lots of shopping and dining (and our favorite restaurant - Kill Devil Grill). There is also a small grocery mart and deli and gas station directly across the street which was SUPER convenient for buying our picnic lunch for the beach. Additionally there is a company that rents umbrellas and chairs in front of the hotel which was nice for us since we didn't schlep all our stuff down with us but it was $64 for two umbrellas and three chairs so it was pretty pricey. Then again, we didn't have to schlep all our stuff from home! :) So, would I stay there again? Yes I would for the convenience to the beach and the surroundings but it's by far not the nicest room I've ever been in. The staff are friendly and helpful though and let's face it, you shouldn't be sitting in your hotel room at the beach anyway!

This hotel is great! All suites so theres 2 rooms! Updated and remodeled, everything is really nice! Pool and hot tub thats never crowded! Steps to the beach, lifeguards right beside the hotel. This hotel is awesome when traveling with kids who still need to nap during the day due to the separate bedroom!

I booked this hotel literally in July, 2015 for a June 2016 stay. As early as one could book into the future. I paid $109.xx a night. I booked the following: Room Details: Suite-2 Double Beds, Non-Smoking, Ocean Front, Separate Living Area, Murphy Bed, Continental Breakfast Here is the bad and I'll follow up with the good. Upon arrival, we were in 100 level rooms which is the ground level. I asked if it was ocean front and the response I got was 'no, only the 3rd through 5th levels are oceanfront" So I asked about getting an oceanfront room, since that is what the above says, and I was quoted at $289.xx, which is more than double that what I had paid. No other option was available. The only view we had was just of sand, 100% sand. Now the latter. The visitors above us decided to feed the birds. So we could not step out out of the room, with a little one, since there were chips, popcorn, and oreos all over the ground. I would generally say from hour to hour there were in the neighborhood of 3 birds to 50 birds outside the door during the day. This latest for our entire 3 day trip. So not only was it not oceanfront, nor sand, it was birds, lots and lots of birds feasting. Since we could not use the patio, we were regulated to use the wifi. Simply put the wifi dropped more often than not. I did a speed test and each time was under 1. The drain in the shower did not work like it should. Standing water, which very, very slowly drained over some 10-15 minutes. The last negative here. I know the difference between a palmetto bug, a water bug and a roach. I have pictures but decided who really wants to see a bug in there hotel room. It serves no purpose really other than to damage a reputation. I'm sad to say there were 2 roaches just inside our doorway. We put everything we had into the refrigerator if we were leaving the room. Now the good. Great location nestled between kitty hawk and nags head. There is a pretty good store across the street that sells subs, which was helpful. The property itself is in pretty good condition. Updated kitchen, tv, bathroom amenities. The carpet was brown and thankful so, since if you walked around barefoot, it would turn your feet black. We wore shoes in the room. The access of getting to the beach was obviously the nicest thing. The parking was plentiful. The bed comfort level was adequate. Nothing fancy but not terrible either. The pool and pool deck was fine. There was a maintenance man out there daily to clean it. Overall, I would not recommend staying there. I don't think I've ever left a 'terrible' review, but this one seemed justified. Just seemed like they invested in new amenities and now are not invested with maintaining it, cleaning it or keeping up with it. Mainly I don't enjoy being tricked. If something says Oceanfront, one would like assume you would actually be able to see the ocean. If it's Dunefront, say it, but don't trick or bump up the price of the room to sell something that it's really not.

Carrie C, General Manager at BEST WESTERN Ocean Reef Suites, responded to this review
We are sorry you didn't get a room with a view, however online all of our rooms are explained in detail as to if they have a view or not and the front desk also explains that our 1st and 2nd floor rooms do not have a few due to the 2 story sand dune that protect us from storms. Yes we do have water bugs as does every hotel on the beach because they live in the sand dunes. We do have the hotel treated once a week to make sure they are only outside and not in the rooms. And I really wish we would have known about the other guests feeding the birds we would have stopped it as that is not permitted on the property just for the reason you encountered. However we do hope you enjoyed your vacation and will come back for another visit

always stay here at the Best Western Ocean Reef Suites when my friend from PA comes for her yearly visit to the OBX. The suites are so roomy & comfortable the 2 of us have our own TV & privacy since both the bedroom & living room have a door. we spend a lot of hours just sitting on the balcony watching the ocean & listening to the fun being had by all by the pool.

I stay here a lot as I have a boat in Nags Head. This is the best value and cleanest hotel on the beach.Keep in mind that hotels at the outer banks are not like most places. 80% of the hotels are outdated and not very clean.Carrie the manger of this property does a superior job with the facility and the staff. On my last stay Crystal corrected a couple of issues quickly and was a pleasure.Ashley has helped me on the phone and is great.I will always stay with my friends at the Ocean Reef!

05/06/2016

After researching hotels on the Outer Banks we decided to stay at the Best Western Ocean Reef Suites. Our check in was good (we had to sign that we were going to stay for the entire time booked or pay anyway). Some "guys" were hanging around the lobby area smoking, not sure who they were. When we got to our room we were pleasantly surprised how large it was. The beds were comfortable, it had a fridge and microwave, sink and coffee maker. They have remodeled recently, it was fine, but the outside of the hotel is "weird" The "breakfast" in the Monument Room was mediocre at best. When our toilet wouldn't flush and almost flowed over, the young girl at the front desk said WE could come down and get a plunger...... :-/ When we checked out the young girl (Different young girl) was VERY sick. When I asked her if she was sick she confirmed, I told her she shouldn't be working, she was going to get the guests sick, she just smiled.

"Great Location "

03/06/2016

We stayed here for six nights. The location is great since the beach is right behind the hotel. The room is large and has refrigerator, microwave, and a dining table. Our room was on the first floor which had direct access to the pool and spa. The hotel offers free breakfast and has very strong wi-fi. The maid service was slow so that we have to go to the front desk everyday to request cleaning before noon. The first day that we requested for cleaning of the room, our door was not close when we got back to our room ( not sure it was done purposely or the maid was planning to come back which she did not). We reported this to the front desk and it did not happen again.

Carrie C, General Manager at BEST WESTERN Ocean Reef Suites, responded to this review
Thank you for the great review. I am pleased you enjoyed your stay. I'm sure the door was just a mistake from housekeeping however it should have never happened and I am pleased it never happened again. Hope to see you again soon.

We had a great experience at this hotel. Our suite was comfortable and clean. Our room had a FULL-SIZED refrigerator and microwave, as well as a balcony with a view of the ocean. I stayed here in April 2016 when in town visiting family. It was too cold for the beach/pool so I can't comment on those. The hotel was clean, recently remodeled, room had a nice view. This is the third hotel we stayed in on our trip. All three rooms were nice, but the registration desk people were less than friendly in the first two. This hotel registration person was very personable, friendly and helpful. The room is very clean and the layout is great. Price is reasonable, considering it is in a tourist area and we had a beautiful view of the ocean from our 4th floor room. We were missing wash clothes but were able to readily get some from the front desk and we spoke with housekeeping before the second night and upon returning to our room after a day of touring we not only found clean linens, including wash clothes, but also beautiful swans on the bed which had been crafted from additional linens and a nice note from the housekeeper. We have been very pleased with our visit here.

Traveled with my granddaughter and her friend. The suite layout worked out beautifully for us; separate bedroom, kitchenette, two bathroom sinks, balcony and a Murphy bed so no had to sleep on a sofa bed. We were right on the beach, perfect. The only issue we had was that our room was not made up on he second day. We were given fresh towels. The management said it was a problem they were working on. All in all, I would highly recommend this Best Western.r

We stayed at this property exclusively b/t 2005--2010. Returned May 3, 2016--Upgrades have been made to the kitchen, appliances, TVs and sinks--all positive, However, the water pressure in shower was horrible, paint was peeling on living room and bedroom ceilings, there are NO towel racks or hooks near shower/tub, or near outer sink, TP holders are poorly located, room décor average, The balconies, view of ocean, and location on beach are all excellent, Poor hot tub and pool needed paint and cleaning. Price was too high for a midweek stay in off season in an average hotel

Great Location. Hotel was clean, amazing view of the ocean, and hot breakfast included. A very nice deli/store is located right across the street and this hotel is only a very short (1-2mi) drive from many sights and points of interests including the Wright Brothers Museum and Jockeys Ridge.

Great for watching the sunrise from an ocean front room! Spacious two room suite with kitchen appliances. Bathroom was somewhat small. Two TVs. Outside deck. Nice beach though somewhat narrow. Breakfast room gives a good view of the Kitty Hawk Memorial and the town. A quite adequate complimentary breakfast. Friendly staff. Could hear talking in the neighboring room.

We stayed in room 113. We couldn't see the ocean, but it was only a 60 second walk over a sand dune to get to it. We could walk out our door to our patio and on to the hot tub (pool area) which we had to ourselves every night. The pool wasn't opened yet which meant it was very quiet and relaxing. It was being opened the day we left and I heard that a busload of 4th graders were arriving that day. Nice clean, spacious suite. Average beds and pillows.

"Great room on Outer Banks"

5
02/05/2016

I was totally overjoyed with this suite. It provided plenty of living space, a small kitchen, great sleeping area. Of course, we loved the balcony looking out onto the ocean. I found the room to be very clean. The hotel was a good central location for all of the activities we chose. To top it off, the price was very good. I certainly will recommend this place to everyone I know.

"Not What I had hoped for..........."

I am a loyal Best Western Rewards member that is very faithful to the brand. I generally have great experiences at Best Western hotels. This was not one of my better stays. This was my first visit to the Outer Banks of North Carolina for my wife and I. I reserved my room a few months prior to visiting and requested a room on the highest available floor and early check in if possible. Check in time is 4:00pm at this particular hotel. We arrived at about 2:30pm and asked if the room was ready. It wasn't quite ready which was understandable. I was told that my room assignment had been selected and I would be on the 3rd floor. I inquired about getting a room on a higher floor, but was told that there were so many people checking in that day that I could not be accommodated. I asked the front desk clerk if there was anything I could do to improve my chances of getting a higher floor if I choose to return again. She told me that booking early and requesting a higher floor was all that could be done. I did that, but could only get as high as the third floor. I honestly didn't feel as though she made any effort to even look in the system to see if anything could be done. It wasn't a big deal, but the type of service you get from Hilton Honors for example is so exceptional, it shines a light on those that make no effort to honor your requests. I was told to come back in a while since the room was not ready. We went grocery shopping and returned at 3:30pm to check in. There was a different young lady at the desk this time. She told me that the room still wasn't ready. I was a bit surprised. I know check in is 4:00pm, but it still wasn't ready by 3:30pm? We left to grab a few other things from the store. We returned again at 3:50pm. The young lady looked at the computer and told me that the room STILL wasn't ready…and that she would call me when it was ready. She also told me that it was guaranteed to be ready by 4:00pm so I could check in then. 10 minutes. After first arriving at 2:30pm, asking for early check in..and 10 minutes prior to the general 4:00pm check in time the room was still not ready. So…was our room on the 3rd floor the last one to be cleaned in the entire hotel? How is it possible that my room was still NOT ready at 3:50pm….but ten minutes later not only was our room finally available, but ALL of the other rooms in the entire hotel on all of the higher and lower floors were also ready? We literally could not check in until 4:00pm. When we got to the room, the room was still not cleaned as well as it should have been. After waiting until the last possible minute, I think it was reasonable to assume that the room would be spotless…but it wasn't. There was sand all over the Ottoman, and dining area furniture. A very kind woman from maintenance came to our room and cleaned it for us. We saw her throughout our stay, and she was always courteous and kind. The suite is very nice. It was an oceanfront suite with two double beds and a murphy bed in the living area. There is no longer a stove in the room as some of the older photos show. There is a microwave, an apartment sized refrigerator, a coffeemaker, and three sinks. The oceanfront is great from the 3rd floor up. The dunes block the view of the water on the bottom two floors. Our stay was going pretty well until our second night. At approximately 8pm we began hearing a bunch of noise coming from the room above ours. It was very loud and repetitive. It continued for about an hour before we called down to the front desk. The young lady at the desk said she would find out where the noise was coming from and would handle the situation. The rumblings continued for another 45 minutes before we called back. She told me that she had called the room she felt the noise was coming from to ask them to quiet the kids down, and that I was free to GO TO THEIR ROOM MYSELF to confront them. I was shocked. I have stayed in thousands of hotels around the world, and I have never had a hotel representative suggest that I go to another patron's room to initiate a confrontation that might not end well. The noises continued another hour, and my wife called back to the front desk again. She told the young lady that it wasn't our responsibility to go confront hotel guests in this way. The front desk clerk agreed to try again to do something about the continuous noises. After 3 and half hours of this, the noises finally stopped. I must tell you what I have concluded from my stay here. The suites are great, but there is a huge difference in the attitudes and effort of the daytime staffing from the evening/nighttime staff. I dealt with the daytime staff a few times during my stay. They were kind, smiling, and showed a great attitude and effort to protect the hotel reputation. The front desk clerks I encountered on the evening/nighttime staff were the exact opposite. I get the feeling that they aren't particularly thrilled to be working here based on their attitudes in general and their general lack of concern for customer satisfaction. Although Ashley and the daytime staff were awesome in every respect, and the suites were nice, we will probably stay somewhere else during our next stay in the Outer Banks.

"Older, but updated room"

30/04/2016

We had a very large suite. Unfortunately, it only faced the unopened pool not the ocean. The room was older but nicely updated. The bedroom had 2 double beds and there was a murphy bed in the living area. It had 2 large flat screen TVs, a total of 3 sinks, a couch, 2 chairs, and a dining table with 4 chairs. It also had a small kitchen area and apartment sized refrigerator that could hold a week's worth of food. A family of 6 could comfortably have stayed here. The beds were very comfortable and the shower was great. We could have had a ocean view for more money. Breakfast was fine. The beach in front of the hotel was beautiful.

Wonderful Experience, I will recommend this hotel for all friends and family. Great location for all your shopping needs, unique gift shops and restaurants. I love the fact that all the rooms are suites with nice sitting area comfortable furniture, nice flat screen TV's. The 2 sinks came in handy when trying to get ready for a night on the town.

26/04/2016

Overall this was a very nice hotel. Its location central on the outer banks made traveling north or south a breeze. Breakfast was very nice in a clean well kept area. Beach just a short walk. The staff have me great recommendations for local restaurants. Only complaint was that in 5 nights they only cleaned my room twice. I was traveling alone so it wasn't a big deal but had I been traveling with family, it would have been a problem.

I can not say enough about how great this hotel was. Totally changed my opinion of the Best Western chain. The staff was lovely & helpful, the room was huge with a beautiful ocean view. Great balcony! Everything was extremely clean. The free breakfast was average but a nice perk. Plenty of choices & everything was very clean there as well. The hotel is right on the beach & very close to many restaurants. There is also a convenience store across the street. I look forward to returning to this hotel in the future.

24/04/2016

Ok So this place isn't bad but it's not great either. Front desk ladies were very friendly and check in was easy. It was packed because of Bike Week at the beach. Our room was spacious but one of our sinks was nasty....never cleaned. We called and someone did come up and clean in it after a little wait. The wall's are paper thin. I could here conversation's for rooms, all around us. I might stay here again if the price is right but will probably try something else next time!. The best this is the location!

Carrie C, General Manager at BEST WESTERN Ocean Reef Suites, responded to this review
Yes this past week was very busy, I am happy to hear the front desk was welcoming. I do apologize for the sink not being cleaned and happy that it was taken care of . This is not our normal for any guest to check in a room that has anything not cleaned. We do hope you will give us another try.

"Great Rooms but not on the first floor"

4
21/04/2016

The room itself is amazing, so much room to spread out a family of 5 could stay there comfortably! We as a family of 5 have always had a hard time finding a room big enough. The breakfast was excellent as well. The pool was not open, don't know why it is hot enough. The gym is small and outdated. I did not go to sauna. Ashley at the front desk was amazing, she really went above and beyond to help us feel better about not getting the room w/ balcony on the 2nd floor we were promised. Overall it ended up being ok thanks to her!

Carrie C, General Manager at BEST WESTERN Ocean Reef Suites, responded to this review
Thank you for the nice review. We are pleased you enjoyed your stay and was very comfortable in your suite. The pool is seasonal and we don't open it until the end of April or first of May. Hope to see you again soon.

20/04/2016

We stayed here for a couple nights in early April 2016 wanting to get a touch of the Atlantic Ocean in our Pacific souls. This hotel hit the spot. It was a very good value. The price was on the lower end and it came with breakfast - always a bonus for me. The hotel is getting a little dated/worn, but for the price? Its awesome. It was very clean and well taken care of. All of the employees we came across were extremely polite and chatty. Not used to that with running into housekeeping, but they were so fun! My #1 goal was to be able to look out over the ocean and chill and we did.

"Nice but no Wifi"

1
19/04/2016

This hotel is nice, but there is no Wifi, I called the front desk the lady was very nice, but was told by maintenance, that you can't have three cell phones at one time using the Wifi or it doesn't work. I have three teenagers and they need Wifi. So if you need Wifi don't stay here. We are here on April vacation, and the pool is still closed, the Days Inn which we can see from this hotel has their pool open. I would really like to give this hotel a better rating.

"Toes (almost) in the sand!"

19/04/2016

Pleasantly surprised at the size and comfort of the room. It was a small apartment with a living/dining room separate from the bedroom. Kitchenette area had a full sized refrigerator rather than an under-counter type, along with a sink and countertop suitable for fixing snax or reheating a meal in the microwave. A pocket door separated the living area from bedroom, making the living room with it's pull down Murphy bed really a separate bedroom. My only complaint is that the room was on the ground floor, so to see the ocean, I had to walk over the dunes. Of course, that meant all I had to do was walk out the patio door, past the pool, and through the gate. Excellent value for the money! I'll be back!

we were trying to enjoy our first real getaway in years to celebrate our 21st anniversary. We chose the hotel because of the penthouse suite and beachfront location. No smoking is a given. When we arrived the room smelled heavily of smoke, there were cigarette butts on the balcony, we had to spend the first night with the patio doors wide open to air out our room. When i reported the problems, the manager assured me they would clean it well and adjust the bill. The cleaning crew failed to clean up the butts on the patio, and upon check out the discount was only $30 for a $159/night room. Most disappointing and nasty.

"Handicapped Visitors Beware"

07/04/2016

I highly recommend this hotel except that I booked an ocean view handicapped accessible room. The bathroom did not have an elevated toilet but did have an extension which had hand bars on each side. This would work for me but those individuals who are wheelchair bound and must side transfer from wheelchair to toilet and back could not use the extension. I have visited every state but have never had as much trouble with regulation handicapped access as on this trip along the coast of North and South Carolina. The vanity mirror was too high to be used from a wheelchair but the closet doors in the bathroom were mirrored so that worked. The price for this three room suite was terrific. We loved having the balcony from the living room, with wall mounted large flat screen TV, to view the ocean and even better was the back bedroom with another flat screen TV. We like to sleep in a dark room and this was the best we had on our trip. Every hotel we visited this trip had huge thick pillows. It would be nice to have two large and two flatter pillows as people have different preferences. The breakfast buffet was good and convenient.. We really enjoyed our stay and highly recommend this facility.

Thank you so much for the wonderful review, it is great to hear what needs to change in my handicapped suites. We will try and make the necessary changes to make them more accommodating. We hope to see you again soon.

I chose the Best Western because I was traveling with my 2 grandsons, ages 7 and 9. BW had an ocean view/balcony suite that was perfect for me and my grandsons. The rooms were clean and comfortable. "Poor service throughout"

03/04/2016

I read great reviews on Ocean Reef Suites so decided to book it w=for a quick 3 night stay with my family. Upon arrival, we went to the front desk to check in. The woman was on the phone but did not acknowledge us with eye contact or even a finger in the air asking us to hold on a moment. We waiting over 8 minutes before she said a word to us (I had all the bags and 3 young children with me). I told her I was there to check in and she said "if you're room is ready" in a tone that made me feel she couldn't be bothered. When I asked if I could get a room on the 4th or 5th floor she told they were just too busy and she couldn't accomodate me. She kept going on and on about how they are so busy and was very short with me. When we arrived in the room, it smelled. The "pool" view would've been great if the pool was open. (it was 75 degrees and spring break, not sure why they wouldn't have the pool open). The internet was spotty at best (pretty much couldn't connect for a majority of the time). During our stay, the tv went out so I called the front desk to fix it. When we came back to the room 6 hours later the tv was still not fixed. The first day when housekeeping came in for service, they didn't vacuum (the kids had popcorn the night before and there were crumbs on the ground) or replenish the toilet paper or bath towels (which were on the ground in the bathroom). We had to call down for both...TWICE...before getting them. On the positive side, James the maintenance guy always had a smile on his face and a "good morning" for us and the man who runs the breakfast was also extremely nice and welcoming (and the breakfast selection was great!). But overall I am disappointed in the experience. I understand that sometimes the start of the season is tough and it takes a bit to get into the groove, but I expected more from my stay. I definitely would not be going back our next visit.

Carrie C, General Manager at BEST WESTERN Ocean Reef Suites, responded to this review
I am truly sorry you had so many issues, believe me this is not the normal for this hotel and my staff. You and your family should have been greeted with a smile no matter how busy were are. I will be speaking with housekeeping concerning the service you got (or lack of) and as far as the pool, last week was not our normal temps for this time of year and I can't just open it with out it being inspected by the county. We do hope you will consider staying with us again.

02/04/2016

This was our first visit to the Outer Banks and to this hotel. The front desk check in clerk was friendly and informative. Although we didn't need to use the Murphy bed in the living room, it is a great alternative to a sofa bed. The full sized refrigerator, microwave, coffee maker and sink that comprises the kitchenette area was handy. I loved sitting in the front good-looking at the ocean. Very relaxing break and central to many attractions.

There was a heck of a thunder storm my last night there but it was neat to here the loud thunder and walk out on the covered balcony (from the room above) and see the serious rainfall that occurred that early morning, want a great place to stay, this is it, enjoy, hope this helps in your travels to this area.

27/03/2016

My daughter and I stayed a few days. Got off to a slow start having to wait a little while for our room but it was smooth sailing after that. Our oceanfront suite was nice. Beautiful comfortable furnishings. Everything modern and new looking. We stayed on the third floor. Breakfast room was down the hall and around the corner. A laundry room near the elevator. I saw snack machines on the ground floor and on the 4th floor. A clean workout room with a sauna was upstairs. The pool was closed on our visit. We only found one way to get to the beach. Walked around the front of the hotel (past the office) then around the side of the building to get to the steps leading down to the sand. Don't send your kids to do this without an adult. Wi-fi was off and on a few times during our stay but we really only used it in the early morning and late evening. When it was connected it was pretty fast. Breakfast was pretty decent. There were eggs and meat every day. Sausage links twice and bacon on our last day. Everyone pigged out on the bacon. It was funny to see so many people piling it on their plates. It was cooked crisp and no fat to be seen. My daughter got out of bed early for it even though she was tired that day. The hotel seemed full but I had no trouble parking where I wanted to. One thing I didn't like was getting to the door of our room. We had to turn in to a short narrow hall off the main walkway. The two doors at the end of the short hallway face each other at an angle and are THISclose to each other. The luggage carts won't fit in that narrow hall ( and neither do the housekeeping carts) because of the short amount of room and the sharp angle of the main hall compared to turning into the short hall to get to the room door. Thankfully we were never going or coming at the same time as our next door neighbor. Ashley and Crystal at the front desk and the couple who worked in the breakfast room were all fantastic. Housekeeping was wonderful too. Everyone worked very hard during our visit. We will definitely stay here again.

Staying at this hotel is more like staying in an oceanfront condominium. The rooms are spacious, clean and the views spectacular. The breakfast area is maintained by two people Connie & Irden who take better care of the breakfast area than most 5-star restaurants. Carrie Collie, the General Manager, has done an excellent job of identifying, hiring, and training a superior staff of people.

The suite was a good fit for our family and the recent interior updates were pretty nice, but the outside still needs some TLC. The people were friendly and it was a good value, but we were bummed that the pool was not open in early March. Thankfully there was a warm front and we were able to hit the beach. The ocean view is very nice and we could sleep with the ocean sounds. Could be a little cleaner and the sheets were pretty scratchy.

Thank you for the review. We are currently working on the outside of the building now that the warmer temperatures have arrived to allow us to do the painting and clean up that the winter temps stop us from taking care of. We hope to see you again soon.

The room was a suite which was very nice. I discovered that both of the end tables beside the bed were broken. i reported it to the front desk & they offered me another room. I declined. the rest of the suite was very nice & the breakfast was excellent all 3 days we ate there. Overall, a nice hotel.

Carrie C, General Manager at BEST WESTERN Ocean Reef Suites, responded to this review
Thank you for the review, we do apologize the granite was broken we actually just got the replacements in Friday March 11. We are glad you enjoyed your stay and hope to see you again soon.

"So much space"

04/03/2016

This suite was so reasonably priced for a tuesday in March. Everything was so comfortable. Loved having 2 sinks in the bathroom and one in the kitchen. Good furniture in the living room, you could close it off from the rest of the place as there was a Murphy bed. Would be good for more people! (we were only 2). Lovely view of the ocean. Bike shop next door rented us a tandem for $10 for the day. We used it to go to the Wright Bros Exhibit which is a must see. Everyone was just so friendly! Recommend going to "Ladles" for soup and salad.

"Best place in Outer Banks, NC"

Our go to place when traveling to the Outer Banks, excellent location - you can see Wright's Memorial from the room, price is excellent for the area - we usually only travel there from fall to spring and staff is great and the folks that prepare breakfast enjoy what they do.

Carrie C, General Manager at BEST WESTERN Ocean Reef Suites, responded to this review
Thank you for the nice review. We are so pleased you enjoyed and stay and hope to see you again soon.

"After forty years"

21/02/2016

My husband and I have been visiting the OBX since we were kids. We have eaten and stayed at a ton of places there. I am not sure why but we have never stayed at this hotel. From check in it was a great experience. The cute lady at the desk asked me if we had ever stayed there and I said no and she said well you won't want to stay anywhere else after this visit and boy was she right. The rooms were very clean, well laid out, and very spacious. The ocean view is to die for and there is a stop and shop across the street that is very convenient. The breakfast was also very nice and so were the lady and gentlemen working there. We will definitely be back to this one. A couple of suggestions would be wash cloths, paper towels and a little dish soap at the kitchenette would be greatly appreciated but otherwise, we really enjoyed this hotel.

Carrie C, General Manager at BEST WESTERN Ocean Reef Suites, responded to this review
So happy to hear you enjoyed your stay, and thank you for the kind words and great review. We look forward to seeing you again soon.

"The Best Best Western"

5
21/02/2016

I've stayed at nearly two dozen Best Western properties over the past couple years - this was the best. It was nearly midnight when Gale checked me in with a cheerful smile and professional speed, recognizing my fatigue. Her compassion and cheer were a fantastic first impression. The room was perfect, the bed so comfortable I slept better than I have in months and nearly missed the sunrise I'd determined to see from my balcony. Breakfast was outstanding, tended over with care by two solicitous hosts, the food never allowed to even halfway run short. The location is perfect, situated on the beach just a short walk from the Wright memorial. I will definitely be back!

Carrie C, General Manager at BEST WESTERN Ocean Reef Suites, responded to this review
Thank you for the wonderful review, and the nice comments concerning Gale. We are so pleased you enjoyed your stay and hope to see you again soon.

Kill Devil Hills, birthplace of aviation is home to ocean front Best Western Ocean Suites~ # 1 in hospitality, cleanliness, location, and every room is a suite! Gale, front desk clerk, is professional, friendly, and a huge asset to Best Western~ she greets every guest with a happy welcome, how may we help you, and quick efficient check in. Rooms are very clean, updated, and perfect for an overnight stay or a week vacation on the Outer Banks. We will return to BW Ocean suites!

"Great Place, Great Value"

30/01/2016

Friendly, clean, spacious and a great value, especially for an oceanfront room with a balcony and a beautiful view from the 5th floor! Our suite had a separate bedroom with a tv (pillows were foam...the only negative, but we travel with our own anyway) a kitchenette and a living room with a murphy bed, dining table and chairs, tv and sofa. Nice two part bathroom with two sinks and vanity area. All of the employees we encountered were very friendly and helpful.Typical breakfast with hot and cold options is included. It is located close to restaurants and across the street from a convenience store and down the street from the Wright National Park and Museum. Very comfortable and very clean. We will stay here again when we are in the area.

we always stay at this Best western every time we visit Outer Banks. It is always clean, staff always friendly and courteous. Hotel has been remodeled and is absolutely gorgeous. 18/01/2016

Ashley was very friendly, professional and accommodating at check-in and check-out. We requested an upper floor room when I made the on-line reservation. She gave us an upper floor room with a fantastic view. It was during my conversation with Ashley that I knew this Best Western is a very well-managed hotel. The breakfast provided by Connie was fantastic and a big upgrade from previous stays years ago. The hotel has been very nicely remodeled. The rooms were extremely clean and well appointed. We stayed here often but were hesitant to stay here due to a unfortunate stay back in 2013 when the hotel was under different management. The previous manager promised a gift certificate which I never received. Well, we tried it again and we are glad we did. This hotel is fantastic. I would recommend this hotel to everyone, especially the folks who might not have given BW Ocean Reefs a stellar rating in the past. I would tell them to try staying at BW Ocean Reefs now. The change is really impressive from the professionalism of the staff, cleanliness and quality of the rooms to the great breakfast provided. Carrie, the current manager, made up for the promised gift certificate. The changes and upgrades she made to this hotel are all positive. We are definitely coming back.

Carrie C, General Manager at BEST WESTERN Ocean Reef Suites, responded to this review
Thank you for the kind words, we are happy you enjoyed your stay and look forward to many more happy return stays.

"Family Visit"

5
18/01/2016

My husband and i enjoyed staying at this hotel while spending time with family who lived near the hotel. We stayed in a remodeled room on 1st floor. Space is quite large and would be great for a family. Separate bedroom, living room, kitchenette, and bath. Tv's are in living room and bedroom. Also 2 separate bath vanities and 2 large closets. Nice linens. We knew 1st floor would include a view of dunes and not ocean but within a couple of minutes you can walk to beach or parking lot. In summer first floor would be great to access the beach or pool. There is a nice porch with walkway to beach. Free breakfast in small room on 3rd floor with elevator access. Food was good and gentleman serving us was very pleasant. Great deal on rates this time of year. We stayed 5 nights. Great location for traveling north or south on OBX. The gas station across the street sells everything. Good deli. Will stay here again.

wonderful staff and very clean suite, I would definitely recommend this hotel to anyone looking for friendly staff, clean large suites which include a nice kitchen area for families. Seems to be very kid friendly. It would be absolutely perfect if it had an indoor pool for winter visitors.

14/01/2016

This is an nice facility at a great location in Kill Devil Hills, NC. The hotel offers great amenities and the rooms are very clean. The quality of the linen was also very good!! However, my experience was dampened by an unfriendly and unhelpful member of the front desk staff at both check in and check out!! She represented the face of management and unfortunately created a very bad first impression for my wife and I.

Carrie C, General Manager at BEST WESTERN Ocean Reef Suites, responded to this review
I am very happy to hear you liked our hotel and sorry to hear my front desk was not helpful and friendly. I have looked into this and this was not a member of management and this matter has been addressed with the person involved. We do hope you will come back soon.

"Great Location with Great Rooms"

10/01/2016

This motel backs up to the beach so our beach view from the balcony was great. Big spacious rooms with a living room area separated from the bedroom. Very clean room and bathroom. Clean linen, clean beds and clean floor. The room was decorated with beach theme photos and paintings. Lots of amenities. The staff was friendly and worked with us with no reservation to provide a great room at a good price. Breakfast was ok, nothing special but lots to choose from.

"Best Stay and Hotel I have seen in a while!!!"

28/12/2015

We made a trip to Kill Devil Hills this weekend and rented a room at the Best Western Ocean Reef Suites. It was wonderful!!!! They have a very friendly staff and the rooms have just been redone. LARGE living area with a trundle bed and balcony. Bedroom is kind of small but enough room. We had the 2 double beds, very comfy!!! The small "kitchen" (has fridge, microwave, and sink) separates the living room from the bedroom. Bath is right in the middle. Breakfast was tasty, they have waffles, eggs with cheese, bacon. oatmeal, cereal, fruit, and a couple other items. I would highly recommend you stay there. We will go back!!!!!

"Mixed Emotions"

28/12/2015

The hotel staff was very friendly and professional. Over the hotel was very clean and well kept. Outside our room was three laundry carts over flowing with sheets. There was plywood as a floor to the elevator. Hair was found in the tub. There was no toilet paper, but since there was room cleaning carts as well outside our room I was able to grab a role. The chairs on the patio were filthy with what looked like cigarette ashes. The breakfast in the morning was good but very cramped. The view was fantastic. Overall our stay was worth what we paid for the room.

"Great Value"

26/12/2015

"Wonderful Thanksgiving at Ocean Reef Suites"

5
15/12/2015

We have stayed at this hotel a number of times, but it had been maybe 5 years since our last stay. The rooms have been completely updated and are really decorated beautifully with granite countertops, beautiful pictures, and comfortable, trendy furniture. The only drawback would be the loss of the stove/oven component in the kitchen area. We had stayed at Ocean Reef previously due to their being an all suites hotel and the fact that we had a full kitchen and could cook in our room. The rooms still have a full size refrigerator, but only a microwave for cooking, so you are limited as to what you can prepare. We did stay in a regular room and in the penthouse (sorta - it's not on top of the building, but is on the top floor). The penthouse is very spacious and decorated beautifully, more so than the other rooms, and features a whirlpool tub and a faux fireplace that looks like the real thing. You do have an induction stove to cook and a microwave, but alas no oven. We just ended up steaming our oysters on the stove instead of roasting them. I would say the only drawback to the penthouse is the main room is a little dark (without lights) due to a smaller deck and deck opening which is the only natural source of light for that room. The private rooftop deck with a 360 degree view definitely does make up for the small deck at room level. As far as the overall hotel is concerned, I don't think there is a room with a bad view - even the pool view rooms above the first floor are ocean view as well. The grounds are immaculate and the staff from the front desk to the room cleaners are helpful, friendly, and accommodating. We will definitely stay again.

Carrie C, General Manager at BEST WESTERN Ocean Reef Suites, responded to this review
Wow, thank you for the great response. We are happy you have returned and hope to see you again soon. so happy you enjoyed your stay.

Rooms are huge with separate bedrooms and all face the ocean. The hotel is about 30 years old but the rooms have flat screen TVs (2) and good facilities. Features include balcony, air-conditioning, kitchenette. Staff were welcoming. Bed Comfort was ok without being outstanding. Only gripe the coffee maker had a used sachet in it, otherwise it was all clean

07/12/2015

We stayed at this hotel 26 years ago on our honeymoon in Nags Head. We are in the area every year, but this is the first time we have stayed since that time. I was a little skeptical, but it turned out fine. Everything was up-to-date and clean. There was a large patch of paint peeling on the ceiling in the bedroom, but other than that, it was clean and spacious.

Carrie C, General Manager at BEST WESTERN Ocean Reef Suites, responded to this review
So happy you returned for another visit, we hope it will not be your last. Very sorry about the paint peeling this is items we are addressing now since our season has came to an end.. Thanks for the review.

This hotel does not look impressive, however it has many positive things. Free parking, free breakfast, free Internet, big rooms, great access to beach and polite personnel. I recommend first floor rooms, because they have direct access to beach or pool.

We had a 5th floor suite with a living room and an ocean view. The layout was great for our family as it gave the kids their separate sleeping area and my wife and I our privacy, The hotel has direct beach access which was very nice. The breakfast is standard fare for a hot bar breakfast. The only issue I had was with the mattress. It was soft, springy, and noisy.

Carrie C, General Manager at BEST WESTERN Ocean Reef Suites, responded to this review
Yes the layout of the hotel is great for families, so happy you enjoyed your stay. We hope you come again soon.

Actually there was a sitting room with a couch and also a dining table..Very nice bathroom and a comfy bedroom..Also a nice balcony outside to sit and watch the waves rolling in!! I would recommend this motel very much!! Nice staff and great breakfast too..:) Also great location for all the sight seeing!!

26/11/2015

We stayed at the Ocean Reef on a whim last spring, to get away and see the ocean plus visit friends/family. We were impressed with the rooms & their amenities so when we decided to go back this fall, we didn't even consider another place. We weren't disappointed this time , either. Just like our last visit, the staff was helpful & the rooms were clean & comfortable.

"Great View, Bad Experience ??"

3
21/11/2015

My wife and I arrived almost midnight we let the hotel know we were going to be late since we had to drive 4 1/2 hours from Raleigh. We also let the hotel know that my wife was walking with a cane and was in great pain. We were supposed to have a note we were supposed to have an oceanfront room but somehow that was misunderstood. After telling the hotel clerk once again that my wife was walking with a cane they moved us to an ocean view on the fifth floor which was which was great, however what they didn't tell us was that the elevator on that side of the hotel was not operational. So in the pouring rain at midnight we had to walk the entire length of the hotel, needless to say my wife and I were very unhappy and she was in terrible pain. In the morning I went down to see the clerk to voice my displeasure her and I asked that the manager call me to talk about the experience. I never received a call from the manager I never received a call from anyone no one offered any compensation. All I really wanted was for someone to apologize, but clearly the manager didn't think this was important. Later today I'll be calling the corporate office I feel bad for this manager.

Carrie C, General Manager at BEST WESTERN Ocean Reef Suites, responded to this review
So sorry about the misunderstanding concerning your room, our ocean front rooms are on the 1st and 2nd floors without a view of the ocean due to the sand dune that protects us from the water. I do apologize for them not telling you one of the elevators was down and being serviced. I would also like to say I'm sorry I was out of town on vacation and was not informed that there was an issue. We hope to see you again and hopefully you will enjoy your stay.

This is a great hotel located directly on the beach. The rooms are suite type and much bigger and more comfortable than we expected. The breakfast buffet is a nice touch, not perfect but adequate. Best hotel in Nags Head and well worth the stay. Surprised but very pleased about the room. Loved the layout of the room & layout of the hotel to the ocean. Excellent rate. Needed an inexpensive place to sleep for a busy three day/two night visit to the Outer Banks. Was drawn to the Best Western because of the low price, and was extremely pleased with the overall value. Room was clean and comfortable, location on the beach was great, hotel staff were all friendly and helpful, and even the breakfast exceeded expectations. We are definitely planning to stay here for any future visits.

Room was clean, seemed to by recently renovated. Staff was friendly and attentive. Would ask for pool/ocean view next time on upper floor (4th or 5th)because our view on 2nd floor was mainly pool/dunes. But weather was cold/rainy so view wasn't great this visit on any floor.

"Multi-floor Motel Style Hotel"

4
07/11/2015

The five story hotel has only outside corridors accessed by stairs and an elevator at each end of the building. In a windy rain storm this could be a problem when accessing the exercise room or breakfast room. The free hot and cold breakfast offered lots of choices. We stayed on the third floor in the center section which offered both a ocean view from the balcony off the living room and a city view of the Wright Brother's Memorial Tower from the window in the bedroom. It appears that all rooms offer the ocean view and I suspect most also offer the city view. The suite was very clean and the beds, sofas, chairs and flat screen TVs were all first class. The hotel location was convenient and the staff were very helpful and customer focused. We would stay there again.

We stayed here one night, October 30th. We were booked for two nights but left early, not because of the room. The elevator to get to our room is outside about 40 yards from the front desk. If it had been raining it would have been very unpleasant. When I booked I asked for a top floor room and we were given one, 502. Great view of the ocean! One of the first things you check is the bathroom. It was clean but the tub surface was in poor condition (see photo). The beds were very comfortable I thought. Two doubles which is what I asked for. Amenities were nice- 3/4 size fridge, me, coffee, small couch and nice dinette set. TV in main room and bedroom, but no HBO, which is standard usually. The sliding door to the patio was very hard to open. Paint on ceiling was chipping by patio door. Tiny cheap patio chairs. For $140 a night I expected nicer. The breakfast id's continental - no eggs like we were told by a housekeeper. Cereal, juice, waffle maker, bagels, etc. Since the hotel did not appear very full (10-20 cars) we should have had a room with no obvious flaws. I'd give the bedroom an A and the rest a C-. Read the reviews on Trip Advisor before booking.

Thank you for the review, yes we are having some issues with the paint peeling from the tubs. However starting today we have a company refinishing our tubs, we had to wait until the season was over to resolve this issue. Hope to see you again soon.

We decided at the last minute to head for the beach. We were able to stay here for two nights. The room was super clean and had a very nice ocean view. Accommodations included a refrigerator, sink, and microwave in the kitchen area as well as sleeping for 6. Two separate sinks in the bathroom area was great too. I was most impressed by the lift chair next to the pool to serve disabled swimmers. Though we did not need it, I felt happy that all guests could enjoy the pool. Kudos for being inclusive.

we stayed here for 4 days and the room was so quiet. our housekeeper made animals out of our towels, she made our trip special. The room was very clean, bed was great ant we could see either the ocean or the street from our living room. The staff was very helpful, the beach was only a few feet away. We will be back next year

We got a great deal and enjoyed our stay very much. Staff is above-average and everyone was at the top of their game. Stay on fourth or fifth floor if you can; the view is better. Hats off to the maintenance person who took the time to write a lengthy note for us on how to easily rectify a problem we had with the TV should it occur again (which it didn't). Front office staff was excellent, housekeeping was attentive, and the gentleman breakfast room attendant was a joy to greet each morning. Very convenient location; we will return!!

Centrally located in the Outer Banks, just a stone's throw from Wright Brothers National Memorial and Jockey Ridge State Park (where you feel as if you are walking in the Sahara Desert). Suites trump rooms when vacationing and the ocean view is a pleasure. Excellent breakfast, locale, and experience.

It is our 'go to' motel for the Outer Banks area. A great place to stay, they have renovated it as it was once a condo and makes for a wonderful stay, bedroom and living room areas are separated with a kitchen area. Lots of room and great view of the ocean and the Wright's Memorial.

This hotel, beautifully located, was a nice surprise on the OBX. For a reasonably priced, oceanfront hotel, it was very well maintained. Clean and spacious for the 5 of us. Breakfast was good. Pool was heated and clean. We really enjoyed our stay and would certainly come back here.

Perfect location for a beach trip to the outer banks. The ocean view and sunrise were stunning. Staff was helpful. Large room. Will recommend to friends. We were in the perfect spot to visit the many attractions in the area.

The room was awesome. We picked this one not knowing anything about the area or accommodations. We were pleasantly surprised. Our room had a great view of the ocean and the pool. You are literally 100 feet from the water. We never had to use the A/C or heat because we just kept the sliding doors open while we were in the room. The room had 2 televisions. One in the living area and one in the bedroom. Everything was clean and updated. The staff was helpful, the breakfast they have was filling enough to hold us over until lunch time. The location was great too. Can't wait to go back to NC....will definitely stay here again.

We could not have picked a better hotel and location for our visit to the Outer Banks. We were able to do daily trips from Kill Devil Hills and use the Best Western for home base. We especially enjoyed Miss Connie each morning in the breakfast room. Would book again if going to that area.

Carrie C, General Manager at BEST WESTERN Ocean Reef Suites, responded to this review
Happy to hear you loved your stay. I will tell Ms. Connie you mentioned her, hope to see you again.

Great location at a fair price. The breakfast was very good and and being right on the beach was very nice. Close to many points of interest and great places to dine.. I will stay at Best Western Ocean Reef Suites on my next trip to the Outer Banks.

"House keeping"

17/10/2015

Would not recommend this hotel unless they improve on their house keeping, someone needs to teach them the proper way to clean a room, and place clean towels where they belong and not just lay them on the bed. The one room we had, there was paint peeling on the ceiling and the chips falling to the floor, you would think house keeping would take care of this. The hotel staff at check in was very friendly and helpful. Location of hotel was good.

Carrie C, General Manager at BEST WESTERN Ocean Reef Suites, responded to this review
Sorry you had a problem, I will be speaking with housekeeping concerning your issues as this is not acceptable to me, as we do carry a very high score through Best Western International on our inspections they do 2 times a year. Hope you come back and stay with us again.

Basically just across the street from Kitty hawk. The beach is a short walk from this hotel. The great off season rates . The suite was a great change from your standard hotel room. The two flat screen tvs made our stay just like homer.Their hot breakfast changes eqach day and the breakfast staff are the greatest.

This is a great hotel to stay at. Rooms are great with partial or full ocean view. I was surprised that we did not have a stove/oven in the room which I was expecting because of previous trips when we did have a fuller kitchen when we booked. We had partial view of the ocean/pool and the view for the sunrise from the deck was perfect! Breakfast was adequate, coffee wonderful. I am one who likes to have some sort of egg offering just as my own personal preference. There were plenty of other choices however,, and I was happy with being able to make a fresh waffle, have banana and yogurt. The gentlemen and woman who made sure food was stocked and well supplied did an absolutely excellent job and were very friendly. Will definitely stay again at this Best Western.

Carrie C, General Manager at BEST WESTERN Ocean Reef Suites, responded to this review
Thank you for the great review, we did have the stoves before but due to the insurance for the property we were required to remove them. Happy to hear you enjoyed your stay and we look forward to seeing you again soon.

Very roomy and spacious. Layout could accommodate extra guest if needed. Nice living room area with room to spare. Nice bed and linens. Clean and very comfortable. Suite had all amenities you could ask for. Nice continental breakfast. I'd recommend others to stay there. Especially good for an extended stay or to accommodate vacationers.

Great room , two beds in bedroom and a pull out in the living room, large refrig, great view of ocean and a good breakfast and pleasant staff all at a great price compared to others in the area. Was very helpful when I misplaced my car keys. Had to check out a little later than the checkout time with no extra charge

Pulled up to the door at 11:00 PM and the girl at the desk was still wearing a smile and was very friendly. Other hotels we have stayed at when we have gotten there late have been groggy and grumpy. Got the keys and we were in the room in no time. View of the ocean was great from the room! The carpet was damp near the window probably from the storm a few nights before but we left it open during the day and the sun dried it up. Room was clean when we got there and was always cleaned when we returned the following day. Breakfast was great and something different on the hot plate (IE Omelets and sausage, scrambled eggs and bacon or even biscuits and gravy) along with a nice continental side. Overall a great place to stay on a budget and the beach access is great being right there on the beachfront.

The employees were helpful. The room was nice. I liked that there's a sink in the bathroom and outside of the bathroom. However the lighting for the sink outside of the bathroom was poor. The continental breakfast was ok. For cereal they had raisin bran, cheerios and fruit loops. I thought it was surprising they didn't have either corn flakes or frosted flakes. The oranges were delicious. I found the bed and pillows to be uncomfortable.

Summer at the front desk was amazing and went above and beyond the call of duty to help us with a very last minute reservation, as well as help us check-in early since we were coming into town for a wedding, in the middle of a possible hurricane. She was extremely professional and helpful! We will definitely recommend this hotel to others and will be back, as it is one of the very few hotel accommodations that will fit our family of 6. This was definitely a great value for what we received.

Carrie C, General Manager at BEST WESTERN Ocean Reef Suites, responded to this review
Thank you!! I am so happy to hear Summer helped you in everyway we hope to see you again soon.

"Rain outside and inside"

2
03/10/2015

The sliding door in our room did not fit properly so we had rain pouring in. The carpet was soaked and the wind was blowing through the room. When I called the front desk to ask if they knew about this the girl said yes. I asked if they had any other room and she said no. I asked if there was anything that could be done, she said she would check. A few minutes later someone came with towels and masking tape. I realize that this was not his fault and he was only doing what he was told. This was not a new problem, and they already knew about it before we checked in. Masking tape will not stop rain that is pouring in. No one ever said sorry or gave us any discount. This might be a nice place if the weather is dry. The lighting the bathroom is poor and the pillows are hard.

Carrie C, General Manager at BEST WESTERN Ocean Reef Suites, responded to this review
So sorry you didn't enjoy your stay, with the wind that was driving the rain it will come through the doors during any major storm like we had. We do hope you will return and hopefully have a wonderful weather stay.

We had a wonderful stay at the Ocean Reef. Room was perfect neat and clean, even the remote was bagged, bed and pillows were extremely comfortable, view was spectacular, front desk and staff were pleasant and helpful, breakfast and the gentleman serving it was great! The only thing we didn't like, the weather was not the best and we couldn't stay longer. WE WILL RETURN!
