"Tired"

Arrived late and the staff waited up for us (felt a bit sorry for her as she was waiting to go to bed). Very welcoming. I could not fault any of the staff in anyway but the room we had (an outside annexe) was very tired indeed. The bed was clean and comfortable but the room was very cold, noisy till late as there was a party going on somewhere, soiled carpets and the mould in the bathroom. Showered in the morning, by way of electric shower. Husbands was fine, then it broke and I had to hold the button in and try to shower with one hand. For this we received a reduction on our bill which we agreed to but it wasn't that cheap to start with. The breakfast was good. Room needs to be taken out of service - replace the shower, give the carpets a good clean or replace and get rid of the mould.

My mum and I enjoyed an extremely pleasant overnight stay at The Gatehouse Hotel. We were impressed with the interior of the hotel including dinky bar area and oak panelling throughout. Our bedrooms were immaculate and finished to a most desirable standard. The bed and linens spotless and cosy. Loved the evening meal, my steak cooked to perfection. Must emphasise that we received a warm welcome and attentive service from the ubiquitous Marina who works very hard to ensure a delightful hospitality experience. Would definitely stay again if in the area and would recommend heartily.

"Awful"

Stayed one night and if I had off been staying any more I would have checked out. Staff were not at all friendly and definitely not helpful. My room was not one of the new rooms, no air conditioning, plastic shower curtain and generally the room was tried. Breakfast was standard, no offer of a vegetarian option. Coffee poor quality. Definitely would not stay here again.

"Pleasantly surprised"

Overnight stay for me, my mum and my daughter. Had contacted the hotel in advance to ask that the two rooms I had booked were together and found that the single we booked had been upgraded to a double! Very pleased with the rooms, especially as we had booked at a very good price. Comfy beds, nice tea tray and toiletries supplied in the ensuites. Staff were lovely, all polite and efficient. We had no problem with parking, reception arranged a taxi for our evening out with no fuss. The next morning we enjoyed a good breakfast, lots to choose from and freshly cooked. Very impressed that my order of peppermint tea was met with ease. After reading some of the reviews on here I had been quite apprehensive as we arrived but would totally recommend as we left.

"Nice one night stay"

Stayed over for a night in ipswich just a get away from the kids !!! Easy booking and nice sleep. Had a fire alarm call about 7 a.m but maybe someone burnt the bacon !!!. No explanation which was strange. Breakfast was lovely and i had a lovely piece of kipper and my partner had a nice bit of mackrel.

"Friendly staff but hotel not great "

Looks rundown from the outside and the inside is not much better. The rooms are small and old fashioned and could go with updating. The shower kept cutting out whilst in use, the grouting was dirty and the hairdryer old and yellowing. There was a toe nail on the bedroom floor and pubic hairs on the bathroom floor. Ordered a cheese and ham toasted sandwich, simple order yet the chef couldn't even get it right, was not as menu, wrong bread and no dressing. The restaurant had no atmosphere and there was only one table occupied. The member of staff was supposed to be the receptionist, bar person, waitress and cover room service, although this was done with a smile and a friendly manner. There is a large garden yet no outdoor seating to enjoy it other than one smoking table near the doors of the hotel. This was the first hotel that I have stayed at (and I've stayed at a lot all over the world) that I have not asked for late check out. Couldn't wait to leave, very disappointing. Have stayed at Best Western hotels before and they have been good, this one lets them down.

"Better than I first thought"

As I drove into the hotel car park I was wondering what I'd let myself in for as my first impression was not good, but it improved from then on. The hotel was actually quite full of character with wooden beams. Friendly check in, spacious well equipped room although very warm without air con. Breakfast was OK

"Really good"

We arrived very late (10.45pm) having called to explain our lateness. Our welcome was great. Very hot night and no air con but an efficient and quiet fan. Beds comfortable. Shower very good. Breakfast was excellent.

Had lovely overnight stay. Such friendly & helpful staff. Especially marina. Nice spacious room with plenty of tea, coffee & biscuits. Food excellent in restaurant & great freshly cooked breakfast. Very quiet & peaceful. Plenty of parking. Definitely recommend.

"Charming old hotel"

We recently had a 4 night stay. Our room was tucked away out the back and for us easily accessible with our cases, that my husband had been lugging up flights of stairs in other hotels. The parking was easy in the large car park and located just by our room. The room was large and comfortable but could have done with a little bit of freshening up and maintenance. The towel rail in the bathroom had fallen off and wasn't replaced and the whole room needed a fresh coat of paint. We had a room only booking but found the continental breakfast was good value with plenty of variety. We enjoyed dinner in the dining room which was just delicious. A quiet position with a lovely outlook.

"Comfortable room, excellent food"

Had the dinner, bed and breakfast deal and we wasn't disappointed. The hotel was in a large old house with lots of parking and away from the centre, but easy to find and access in the car. The room was big with everything we needed. Comfortable bed and large en-suite. Dinner was excellent, great choice and food value for money. Breakfast was really good too with lots of choice. Would highly recommend and will come again.

"Best Yet..."

We've spent a lot of time in Ipswich hotels over the last few months as we work on the boat in a near by marina... this was the best experience to date. Great reception from the staff, the food was delicious and complimented the wonderfully romantic ambiance of the candle lit dinner. Our room is huge, we're in Room 102. Our friends are in room 101 over the garden which is just as big with a far more modern ensuite... But no complaints! Lovely views, no traffic or city noise at all! I awoke to the sound of bird song, the gardens are filled with rabbits and other wildlife, a rare treat!

"Mini Break "

Opted to stay at this characterful and friendly little hotel during a weekend break in the area. Located some 2-3 miles from the centre of Ipswich first impressions aren't too inspiring, externally the Gatehouse is a little tired and the reception area is approached by way of a door tucked away at the rear of the hotel however on arrival our initial disapointment soon lifted.The reception and public area's have real charm and we received an extremely warm welcome. Our room (1) was spacious, appeared recently redecorated and the bathroom was modern and wouldn't be too out of place in a premium end hotel. Parking is plentiful and the grounds were lovely to wander around.The Gatehouse has the feel of a quaint country house hotel.....at a budget price.We stayed on a very competitive room only tariff so couldn't comment on the quality of the food or breakfast.We will definitely visit this unassuming hotel when we visit the area in the future as we left with a very positive, lasting impression.

"Very nice hotel, lovely gardens"

We stayed overnight on our way home from Europe, and were very comfortable. The room (ours was in the annex) was well provisioned and of a good size. The main hotel building is a grand old country house with lots of character, and the large area of garden with old trees, lovely shrubs and rabbits running around is very atmospheric, a delight to stroll around and redolent of times gone by. Staff were very friendly and the breakfast was beautifully cooked. The hotel is located on the old Norwich Road, now a cul de sac and thus very quiet. All in all a lovely place to stay.

"Excellent and quaint"

Georgian period and a credit to the Best Western brand. Excellent staff. Excellent food and bar (worth exploring). Quaint old world rooms. Awesome breakfast. Will definitely reuse. In a quiet area of Ipswich with occasional horses going past. Particular thanks to the team who stayed a little later to cook me dinner when my flight arrived late into Stansted.

"Lovely "

This is a lovely hotel in a lovely quiet location only a few minutes away from the centre of Ipswich. We were made to feel welcome and special from the moment we made the booking to the time we checked out. The room was very clean and comfortable and the breakfast was very tasty. "Cosy, friendly hotel conveniently situated for town"

Met by friendly, helpful staff. Room large, clean and comfortable with nice view over car park to countryside. Evening meal very good, well presented and extremely delicious. Impressed by the trouble taken to ensure I had a gluten free meal. Staff were very helpful and kind.

"Overnight stay"

Just visiting Ipswich for Mother's Day weekend, this hotel is 5 minutes walk from mother-in-law so we booked for the Saturday night. Situated by a quiet dead end road, although we had a ground floor room right on the road side of the hotel, we didn't hear any traffic. Room big enough and the en suite with walk in shower was small but not too cramped. Tea and coffee plus good storage space plus TV. Bed felt quite firm but we both got a good nights sleep. Hotel has bar and restaurant although we didn't use either. Nice grounds and good parking behind. Would have no problem staying here again.

"May as well have been a shared dorm"

I've stayed in three rooms in this hotel now. The first room was lovely, nice big, airy double. Second room was horrible, a pokey single room much like student halls. Third time, this time is by far the worst. The room itself is lovely, I booked a double to avoid the pokey single room again. Wish I hadn't, at least I might have slept. Im now in room 115, in the annexe across from the main hotel. The room itself is nice enough but the walls and ceiling may as well be paper. I can hear the couple upstairs from me.... word for word!!! Not even muffled voices, I can hear the conversation very clearly, we may as well all be in the same room. Every movement they make causes the floorboards to creak so loudly I'm wondering if they might come through the ceiling. Being on the ground floor and next to the walkway to reception, all the windows are at exact pedestrian level. In short, I'm annoyed that I've paid £60 for what is, so far, a noisy and sleepless night. Im not staying here again unless I can be guaranteed a room like the one I first stayed in.

"Friendly but flawed"

For a cheap to mid-range hotel this is ok, quick into central Ipswich by taxi, and so and my expectations were not that high therefore. Nice bed, very friendly reception and helpful but score let down by unclean floor and bathroom sink with hairs in it. Hotel is old and needs a makeover. But overall as people say its a good place.

"Awful"

The hotel was like faulty towers. Dirty rooms, various hairs found in and throughout bathrooms. Old used plasters found in room that had clearly been there for a long time. Shower units tired and warn. Resembled a hostel not a hotel.

"Clean ,quiet and lovely staff"

Stayed for just 1 night unfortunately wish we stayed longer. The room was large , very clean and well presented. The surroundings are beautiful and tranquil. Staff are a real asset to the hotel as they were friendly and helpful.

"Did not feel safe"

In recent years my wife and I have travelled extensively throughout the UK staying in hotels from the west country up to Scotland. From Ramadas to Malmaisons and most things in between. We have found that allowances must be made for variations in approach and in facilities offered but we always expect the management to be honest when representing the hotel or chain particularly when stating there services in writing. We arrived at the Gatehouse hotel, a Best Western, just before 9pm and therefore decided to take advantage of their restaurant and have dinner. Only to be told that orders for dinner finished at 8.45pm. I challenged this pointing out that their own literature stated quite clearly that the cut off point was 9pm but we were refused dinner. We were however advised to ‘go to MacDonald's'. Next day we went out for the morning choosing to return at noon for their 12 till 2 lunch or possibly their all day bar menu. Both of which were once again clearly advertised on the hotel literature only to be told neither were available. I asked why no-one had thought it helpful to let guest know this by amending the literature that is left in each room but that met with a stony silence. Some people might brush this off but I happen to be diabetic and rely on an available timetable for meals to allow me to control blood sugar levels and to take appropriate medication. I do not need a special diet but merely an honest hotel manager. Along with two missed meals this we also did not get. The hotel has a duty of care to its guests and had I fallen into a hypoglycaemic coma I wonder how they would have dealt with it in the few vital moments they would have had. I have learned not to expect the earth from hotel managers but at least they could try to avoid risking my health and possibly my life. The other staff were extremely good, overworked, but good. Some to the verge of exhaustion we observed. The food we did get varied from good to very bad particularly the steak which when ordered well done came to the table dry, hard and tough. The same could be said for the mixed grill with bone dry chicken, dry steak and thin, dry, powdery fries best left to the burger outlets for which they were designed. Onion rings came straight from a bag in the freezer to the table via a brief introduction to the deep fat frier. At breakfast, which was very good, everything seemed to be ‘extra'. Fried bread, beans, black pudding etc. My wife who is a vegetarian was somewhat bemused by the menu's insistence that Palma ham was a vegetable. Other points worth mentioning where the room was concerned are the un flushable toilet and the inhabitants of the loft scratching away all night. Not too good for a ‘Deluxe Room'. Good points…The staff were excellent, being helpful, courteous and efficient. The chef was extremely helpful regarding my worries re meals but sadly he was rarely there. The room was spacious, airy and well furnished. Wardrobe a little small for a two person room but lots of drawer space. The bed on the other hand was very hard and uncomfortable. Bathroom was` in a very poor state of repair, see pictures, with a short shower hose set too low to stand under so bending and stooping was required. This meant a very unstable situation which might easily cause someone to topple and fall. I mentioned this to the staff who assured me they would inform the manager which I'm sure they did but no action was taken. If it was such a problem to them I, as a retired plumber, would have been happy to get one for a few quid from B&Q and fit it myself. The bath had a mixer tap/shower control so the water came direct and if someone else turned on a cold tap you got over heated water. The view from our window by the way was a gully full of dirt and litter. I have added several pertinent pictures to back up my points. In all this is a poorly managed corporate hotel with staff being worked too hard and cuts being made wherever they can get away with it. I am writing to Best Western about my concerns and to the Diabetic Network Magazine to let other diabetics know the situation at the Gatehouse. Also the AA who give them their rating. As I mentioned earlier concerning meals it's not that a special menu be supplied simply hotel literature one can rely on to be factual and up to date. In this case however corporate misinformation in writing destroys any faith one might have in the entire Best Western chain. As does the use of the term ‘Deluxe' when the room was clearly not so and 'Fine Dining' when it isn't. Far worse was the reluctance by the management to remove the obviously untrue elements from the guest information folder left in the room.

"Will never use again!"

Had an overnight stay booked for 30th sept for myself and my daughter as part of my daughter's birthday treat. Had already contacted hotel a couple of weeks prior to ensure we were put in a quiet area due to myself suffering with anxiety and bad nerves and needing a good nights sleep. Checked in about 7 pm and was taken to our room. It was out in the courtyard and dark by this time. Was given our keycard by the receptionist who then left us at the front door. It was dark with no outside lighting and couldn't even see the slot for the card key to gain entry. Note to staff - guests should at least be shown into the room! We then discovered why she left so abruptly. As soon as we entered the room we were greeted by an overpowering smell of bleach and chemicals. I myself have asthma and simply couldn't breathe. We immediately went back to reception and informed them only to be told there were no other rooms available. They then proceeded to telephone their sister hotel about 5 miles away to enquire whether they could accommodate us. They firstly asked if we would be happy with two singles upon which I said "no way". I'm here to have a mother/daughter weekend to celebrate her birthday. They then said we would have to wait half an hour for them to convert a double room into twin beds. By the time we got to our room at the sister hotel it was gone 8 o clock and was exhausted and just wanted to rest. However the guy in the room below us wasn't going to allow us to do that. The noise from his telly was ridiculously loud we couldn't hear ours above it. This went on til midnight. Then the slamming of doors ensued. Finally got to sleep only to be woken by the bloke's snoring!! So loud it woke both myself and my daughter. Suffice to say had an awful nights sleep. Would like to point out that I'm a 47 yr old Fibromyalgia sufferer which brings its own issues, in particular needing a decent amount of sleep due to chrsonic fatigue and pain. I'm not fortunate enough to be in a comfortable financial position and so every single penny I spend, I expect the service I'm entitled to. All in all, a horrendous experience at the Best Western which has now made my mind up never ever to use this chain again. I didn't have a great experience at a Best Western some years ago but assumed that was an isolated incident. Alas I was wrong. Will much prefer to stay at a Premier Inn in future - much cleaver, quieter and comfortable rooms

We are truly sorry on this occasion we did not meet with your expectations and saddened we were a disappointment to you on your daughter's Birthday Celebration. It is Not common practise by our staff to abandon our customers at the back door, please rest assured we will make immediate amendment if this were the case, although dark our court yard is fitted with automatic sensor lighting to comply with our green tourism award. In the interest of hygiene our rooms are serviced to the highest of Best Western standards; regrettably rooms may suffer slight odours if closed for a period of time after servicing. Our hotels were extremely busy on the evening in question thus only having a few single rooms available at our second premises. Customers with issues such as snoring is a growing problem is we do however offer earplugs for guests who are nose sensitive. Only stayed at this hotel for one night but I would definitely recommend it to others and go back myself again. The staff were very friendly and always gave a smile when walking past. It's a small hotel but very clean and the rooms are a very very good size and perfectly clean. It's also on a very quiet road :) Didn't get chance to go in the restaurant but I walked past and it looked lovely, candlelit dinners and looked incredibly cosy.

"One night stop over for the Stock Cars at Foxhall"

Allowed to check in early and place my bag in the room as I knew a late night was expected. All I wanted was a comfortable bed for the night and that is what I got. The staff were welcoming and friendly, breakfast was enjoyable and that set me up for the long drive back to Yorkshire. I had to park my car on the street as the car park was full but no big deal. Would I return? Yes.

Our guide Glynn Burrows of Norfolk Tours booked us at this lovely little Ipswich hotel on the outskirts of the city. Features that stand out include an accommodating staff (Cristina,the superb chef; Sal, our amazing waitress; Kelsey, the front desk clerk, who went out of her way for us), gourmet cuisine, a quiet, restful location adjacent to a grassy park, a scenic view from the dining room, secluded parking, and more. Our room looked onto a courtyard. If you're into history, the antiquity of the home has been preserved as a listed building. It offers local flavor and charm.”

We have stayed at a lot of 4 star Best Western hotels, although this one is on!y 3stars it is right up there with the best of them. Beautiful building,rooms spotless with modern fittings. Food absolutely amazing and all of the staff we met couldn't do enough for you. When we next stay in the area won't even consider other hotels, this will always be our first choice

Stayed here with my partner whilst completing a cycling event. Hotel allowed us to take bikes into the room and because i emailed in advanced accomodated us with a suitable room for this. Room lovely and clean as was bathroom. Restaurant was lovely. Peaceful and relaxed for couples. Lovely environment. Great menu chouce with bar meals and fine dining available. Food was excellent. Staff service polite, friendly and engaging. Will definately be returning when next in the area. Thankyou

We chose this hotel for one night as we were attending a family party. We basically chose on price (cheap) and reviews on trip advisor. The location is lovely - easy to find, quiet, plenty of Parking. Really charming and traditional with lovely friendly staff. Our room was nice - dated - but clean and tidy and comfortable. HOWEVER the room was SO HOT!!!! The small window was open and we had the fan on that was provided (quite noisy so not the most restful evening). It was so stuffy that I think air con would be a welcome addition as it wasn't an overly warm day.

I stayed two nights in a double room, the weather was muggy and found the window opened sufficiently with very little road or any outside noise to keep open all night, plus there was an added bonus of a fan in the room , which made the evenings sleep much more pleasant. The usual Tea and coffee in the room. And small shower en suite. I found the evening meal quality was good, with service on the first night a little slow. There is a nice snug bar area, all in all a nice little hotel with a nice atmosphere. I would stay again

The actual hotel itself is ok, good parking, ok rooms and excellent food but the one thing which this hotel has, which many others don't, is excellent staff. The staff made us very welcome, were very helpful and did what hotel staff are expected to do but they went above & beyond by taking an interest in us and talking to us. The owners are probably not aware of just how much the staff do and what they add to the experience of guests.

Managed to get tickets to see Elton John but that meant we needed somewhere to stay. I didnt have high expectations as it was one of the only places that wasnt fully booked. I was very pleasantly surprised! The room was spotless, bed VERY comfy, staff very friendly and helpful....and the best breakfast i have had anywhere in a long time. I wont be trawling the net looking for somewhere to stay next time i am in ipswich....i WILL be staying here!

I stayed for one night for the Great East Swim which was nearby the next day. The hotel is out of the way and quiet whilst still being very close to town and easy to get to from the A14. It's got lots of character with wood panelled walls, and a nice feel about the place. My room was massive, very clean, with nice high ceilings. The bathroom was very modern while the room was more traditional and I really liked it. I was on my own so didn't eat in the restaurant but had dinner off the bar menu which was unfussy and inexpensive but still very good quality. I stay in a lot of hotels on business, and finding this place was a real treat!

After months of staying with the competition I tried this new hotel for a change. A quaint place with lovely grounds to sit and read in. The interior is dated and rather jaded but the room huge and beautifully furnished. Dinner was delicious but service very slow considering only myself, one single and a family of 4. Staff were often hard to find when wanting to eat or pay the bill but generally a good night's stay

On arrival I was not sure what to expect. Pictures I had seen before booking were taken from the back of the hotel and initially thought we had the wrong hotel. Hotel is in a quiet location about 10 min drive away from Ipswich centre Reception and all staff were really friendly and helpful. Our room was a good size and clean and comfortable if a little dated. Bathroom had shower over bath which was a bit hit and miss and seemed to have low water pressure. Breakfast and Evening meal were both very impressive, served to table and really nicely presented all food was excellent. Bar area very tiny just a couple of tables. The staff and the food definitely made this hotel.

From the outside, the venue is lovely. The reception and restaurant/bar looked quaint. My room was small but I didn't need any bigger as I was on my own. However the bathroom was a massive downer. The shower was old, made an absolute racket when turned on and wasn't the cleanest. The ceiling was covered in mold from the dampness of the room. There was limescale on the shower glass. I only realised after taking a shower that the shower head was filthy. I was staying over for work and was knackered so I couldn't be bothered to ask to change rooms. The lighting was dull in the room and had to turn every single light on. The bed was rather comfortable. The staff is the hotel's best asset. They were very friendly and helpful.

BOOKING: (source, service, experience) Recommended as a close accommodation location to a wedding venue at which I would be a guest. As the only nearby chain, it was an automatic choice. Originally booked online then amended by phone. Sorted out in a fairly straightforward manner as standard. Service was about average. VENUE: (area, location, facilities, interior) Small and out of the way with a suitable gravel parking lot. Located off a main road but not near major transportation connections; would suit people with cars much better. The building and facilities are a little dated but serviceable. Hallway is a little dark, reflective of the age of the building, but still tasteful. Wifi was free but seemed very slow in some places. Parking is free on site, which is great, though be sure to register your plate number to your room. ROOM: The beds were comfortable and clean though the mattresses are a little springy. The lamps, wardrobes, desk and lights are alright. The mirror was not near any lights or the window, which was a little frustrating when getting dressed and made up. DINING/DRINKING: We selected for breakfast to be included in the booking; we had a full English breakfast. Most items were from a tin or from frozen so I felt this was not good value. We were halfway through breakfast by the time the toast arrived, as well. HOSPITALITY: I was late to the venue and some friends who were meeting me there arrived first; staff were accommodating and let them in once we'd provided evidence of the booking and my ID. This was very helpful. Upon checkout, I found that I was overcharged but this was refunded once the original booking was verified. EXPERIENCE: (inc VALUE) The experience was very average for a cost of about £60 for the single room and about £90 for the twin room. I think an AirBnb stay and breakfast out might have done just as well and come out cheaper.

We stayed in a deluxe double room. We had a friendly welcome and the room was a good size. Bed was comfy. The only downside was the bathroom. The toilet cistern dripped loudly overnight and in the morning the shower was cold. I had to reduce the pressure on the shower so it became warm.

This was a very comfortable hotel in a really useful location. The staff were great, welcoming, friendly and helpful. Our room was very well appointed and well kept. I have had more comfortable beds. Breakfast was more than adequate and well presented. Hotel is not large and as a result was quiet. All in all it was aged experience.

This hotel is in a nice quiet position and has a large car park behind the property. It is an interesting mixture of architectural styles but maintains it's essentially Regency feel both inside and out. Through the front door (on Old Ipswich Road) you come into a wood panelled bar/lounge area. To the right is a bright dinning area with garden views. I was with a group and we decided to just hit the main course. There is a nice lunch selection and each dish chosen was delicious. It did appear that there were only 2 members of staff but, on this occasion, that was enough. Good food, good value and a friendly duo - a good place to eat without the hassle of a town centre location but within easy reach of the whole town.

Lovely quaint hotel on the outskirts of Ipswich, located on a quiet road end. Hotel has a bit of character, lovely grand wooden staircase to upper floors. Small quiet drinking area and a nice sized restaurant. Highlight of the stay was the welcome from the staff especially the night front desk and the cook/chef. They made each guest feel so welcome. Oh and the food was excellent. Best breakfast in a long time. We made a nice friend in the restaurant at breakfast too.....an Ipswich local living in South Carolina over visiting family.....felt sorry saying goodbye! Maybe we will return in the future, I hope so.

Apart from the staff being friendly the best western gatehouse hotel leaves little to feel glad about! Rooms over priced at £59 per night considering the bed was a very small double, only enough milk for one cup of tea/coffee each. At 7.35am we got woken up by either staff or guests. Was just plain and basic not worth the money.

Been staying here for the last two weeks. Absolutely brilliant in so many ways. Food was of such a high standard and plenty of it too. Dont be fooled by the entrance as it feels your going in the backway but this is the entrance to comfy and presentable rooms,quality food , and better personal service than i experienced in some 5star hotels. Well done ,i will always stay here now when in area .

The rooms are a good size, but the beds are very, very uncomfortable. The breakfast was awful, everything was deep fried. When my breakfast arrived it was swimming in fat, and also had two hairs, at no extra cost. The location was good for us, but would rather drive further, than stay at this awful place again.

On Arrival to this hotel first impressions were it seemed a bit run down from the outside , which is a shame as it is in nice grounds . But once inside it was lovely with a wooden panelling and a nice big staircase. The receptionist was very pleasant but had draughted in from another hotel and didn't even know where our room was !! Once inside our double deluxe room it was very pleasant with a sleigh bed and double aspect windows over looking the gardens. But the room was quit chilly when we went in .the small bathroom definitely needs updating .. once settled we ventured downstairs to have a drink and lunch but to our suprise and dissapointment there was no one there to serve us or prepare lunch even though there are lunch menus in the room advertising it . The receptionist did offer to make us a drink but we declined and left in search of somewhere to eat. The hotel missed out on an opportunity to up sell !! We arrived back and went to put lamps on only to find the bulb had gone in one I asked for a replacement bulb but sadley they didn't have any ?! We had a good night's sleep, breakfast was very good produce high quality lovely poached egg and good quality sausage the only thing that let it down was the apple juice which had been so watered down it tasted like apple flavoured water and the orange juice was cheap concentrate.. overall a good clean hotel and the staff are very nice if not very many of them but I wouldn't stay here again .

The Gatehouse is a hotel with charm, A Georgian building that has a period dining room and a snug bar area. The food at dinner was excellent, and the full English breakfast was freshly cooked to order. My bedroom in the annex was spacious and very comfortable, and entirely what I expected in an older building. The floors may creak and the doors stick, but these are minor things compared to the chance to stay in an 18th century building. If you like character in your hotel, then this is an excellent choice .

Yet again we stayed at the Gatehouse, this time only for B and B as we were visiting family. As always the staff were incredibly friendly and both Sharon and Villiers were brilliant and soo friendly. The breakfasts, as always were delicious and perfectly cooked and presented. My thanks to the morning chef. We regret that this time we could not partake in their evening meals, which in the past have always been brilliant and such good value. Well done Gatehouse, Sharon, Villiers and the morning chef. This was our first stay at the Gatehouse Hotel. It is an old property with a lot of character and in general terms is very clean and presentable. The property has plenty of parking around the back and is situated on large grounds. We were warmly welcomed at reception and we found the staff to be very friendly and helpful. We only stayed one night and only had one meal which was breakfast. The waitress was lovely and very helpful. There was a good choice of cereals and fruit and then we had a freshly cooked 'Full English' which was delicious. The room(11)we stayed in was adequate. The bed was a King and was comfortable enough but it was a warm night and we were only given a duvet which was far too hot. There is no air conditioning in the room but a fan was provided. There was also a TV and tea making facilities. The bathroom very was small but there was plenty of hot water. The disappointing thing was that there was mould on the grouting and various tiles needed replacing. The mould issue is so easily remedied with spray so the house keeping was poor. With these older properties you make do with the space available however it is important that the facilities provided are up to standard. The Gatehouse has a small bar and the chairs and decor in the dining room was very comfortable. I would stay at the Gatehouse again but would try another room. It is a comfortable enough facility with a pleasant atmosphere but it was the staff that made the difference.

The hotel itself was nice, the rooms are nice and so are the staff. The only thing that lets this place down is the food, I got a steak for the evening meal and asked for it medium rare and it came out medium well, so I sent it back and asked for a new one and they agreed it wasn't cooked to my spec, when the next one came out it was even worse, also cooked medium well, but I just ate it because I was starving! And the cooked breakfast is horrific, bacon is smoked, sausage are chipolatas, the egg was overcooked, the good thing was the beans and toast, that's all I had. I would visit here again, just not eat here.. There's a hungry horse accross the road, go there to eat if you plan on staying here.

we only went to the gatehouse hotel as it is within walking distance of our home on a beautiful may day & we have stayed in best western hotels in france & ireland in the past & found them very good .we didn't stay but had a couple of drinks outside in the magnificent grounds this hotel is a former country mansion with a small intimate bar the receptionist served the drinks & the guinness was in a can but put on a special gadget which turned it into proper draught guinness ! our overall impression as daytime guests was very good & our dog was happy as well sitting outside !

I've reviewed this restaurant before and advised how awesome the food is. I felt I needed to write another review just to reiterate how lovely this place is!! I had duck for my main which was so tender and tasty! For pudding I had raspberry crime brûlée with a honey comb ice cream, I wanted another one!! I look forward to my next visit and wonder what they will have on their menu next time!!

This was a one night stopover, we were ride Harley-Davidsons so had asked for as secure as possible parking. On arrival we were impressed to find the staff were aware of our request and had gone to great lengths to assist. The Hotel is small and was quiet with a large garden lawn to take in some rays. Evening meal was delicious and the breakfast excellent. All the staff were efficient friendly and helpful. The room we had was a good size and the bed comfortable. Not that it effect us but Some parts of the building were a little tired and will be due for a spot of maintenance.

Stayed for two nights in room eleven on the ground floor next to the entrence. Thought it may be a little noisy with the coming and going of other guests, but this was not the case. The room was a good size well appointed with the most comfortable bed. The bathroom was tiny but with a good size shower. Slept really well both nights. Ate in the hotel and the food was delicious and well presented. If you choose the mixed grill make sure you have a huge appetite. Salmon the second night again was cooked to perfection. Breakfast had a good choice and enough to give you a good start for the day no need to snack mid morning. The staff were so nice and very efficient. The hotel stands on a very tranquil road with a bridle path close by. Not far from a bus into Ipswich.

Lovely old hotel in beautiful country surroundings . Lovely and quiet. Staff were extremely helpful with organizing taxis , and gave information on surrounding area. Lovely bar meals too. Bed was really comfortable and so nice to have tea and coffee making facilities in the room.

I work away a lot which inevitably leads to lots of nights away in hotels. The BW Gatehouse is a perfect antidote to the large chain hotel I had stayed in the previous 4 nights. Located outside Ipswich it has a decent car park with plenty of space. Check in was a pleasant and easy experience. Room was up a flight of stairs which for me was not an issue, but as there are no lifts you may struggle if you had walking problems. Room was a very decent size with quality furnishings. PLUS - a light in the middle of the room that actually lit the whole room instead of a myriad of side lights which most hotels seem to offer. Nice comfy sleigh style bed. It makes a noise when you sit on it, so for any amorous couples on a romantic weekend, you may be sharing your passion with more people than you think. Free wi-fi which was fast and consistent. Good night sleep and breakfast was had. Not the usual buffet but instead an order is taken and a fantastic plate of food is brought to you. Better than my previous hotel by miles. Coffee to wash it all down was also very decent. My only criticism was the waiting staff. When someone arrives it is customary to say things like good morning, how are you etc Rather than just stand there with a notepad ready to take your order. He seemed quite pleasant but just needed pointing in the right direction. Apart from that all was good and I would like to come back if I am in the area again.

Easy to get to and easy access to the city and surrounding countryside. Inside still has classic elegance. Large room with good furniture( Superior room). Everything very clean and cred for. The restaurant food was delicious. Menu not extensive, BUT all cooked to order. Menu changes some dishes every night. Breakfast selection adequate. Cooked food very good, great sausages, & scrambled eggs. It was obviously a rather grand "Gate-House" and has had a chequered career. Gardens need some TLC.but still nice to walk in. Plenty of parking space. The Old Norwich Road is odd, ending in nowhere allowing buses only to proceed, with security cameras. Very strange as on Google Earth the aerial view shows it caries on into a village. In the other direction good access to the city and also A14 to go anywhere. Large ASDA and retrial park only 5 minute drive away.

Great hotel, with friendly staff. Generouse outside room. Good breakfast. Lots of character in main hotel, dinning room and bar area. Easy to find. Not far off A14. Asda, McDonalds, KFC, Pizza hut . Costa Coffee all not far away. Near large B & Q and Shell Petrol station.

My wife and I stayed at this Hotel with Tesco Clubcard and was charged just over £44 more than the usual rate for a 2-night stay, so be warned if you intend to book with Tesco Clubcard. We were also given the smallest and shabbiest room. The bathroom was not very spacious and needed some updating as it only had a mixer tap shower over the bath and an old and rickety bath which moved when I stepped into it. The mattress on the bed was rock hard and not very welcoming. I was glad to get out of it the next morning and had an early breakfast, which was the only redeeming feature about this Hotel. The breakfast was excellent - hot and plenty of it. Would not bother again at £100.90 a night not exactly a bargain.

"Good base for visiting the area"

We were in Ipswich mainly to visit family who lived just a couple of streets away from the BW Gatehouse so that was the most logical choice for us. The Hotel was a very reasonable 69 pounds a night which we prepaid. We then purchased breakfast there in the mornings, a full English the first morning and continental the other two and everything was really good. We didn't eat there in the evening so can't speak for the food on the menu. Our first room was 117, a ground floor room with an exterior door. The room wasn't cleaned the first day but it seems like it was a misunderstanding with the door sign which we think probably flipped over during bad weather in the afternoon. We were moved next door to room 15, a larger family room and stayed there the rest of the visit. Both rooms were large and clean and comfortable though we found the bed in 15 more to our preference. Both rooms were located in what might have been a coach house and were away from the road which made it very quiet. The hotel is on a quieter road though there are busses into the city centre very close by. There are some ground floor rooms if you have access problems, where inside the main hotel there are no lifts. The dining room is very elegant and comfortable. There is a small bar as well. I think the person working on the desk is probably the server in the bar when required. The desk is not 24/7 but there is an emergency phone number for off hours needs. We paid for our breakfast but I believe they do have rates that include it. Hotel guests have free wifi and it worked very well.

The hotel is best placed for visiting the area without the increased cost at hotels in the popular tourist areas of Woodbridge and other south Suffolk tourist spots. Direct and uncomplicated route to Ipswich town centre from the hotel. Room 2 is larger than most, good value and faces the front of a no-through-road, therefore little noise during our visit. Good breakfast in portions and range. Evening dinners should be tried. Excellent value and presented well to rosette standard in my opinion. The chef performance is worth a taste. The bed was not to my taste as it was too firm but this would not stop me from returning. Free internet.

A lovely little hotel situated within easy access of Ipswich and the pretty market towns of Suffolk. We had a good sized room with a very comfortable bed and en suite bathroom. Superb fine-dining menu (at a very reasonable price) meant we stayed in each evening, but best of all were the friendly and helpful staff. This hotel is ideal for a quiet weekend away. Free and fast wifi is also a bonus.

"Terrible??????"

Booked for a 2 nights stay the Best Western Gatehouse, I was working nearby . This hotel needs a a total makeover so old . I was in room 15 ground floor and can hardly sleep for the 2nights I was there as the noise from the screeching floor for the room above was unbearable. I had an allowance for my meal and drinks and I wished I had dined elsewhere .The food was horrible . I ordered the Angus burger on the first night and it was horrible could not cut through the burger as it was rock hard and had to return it and went back to the room in a huff ?? Though I give them the benefit of the doubt and decided to give the food another go ,On the second night I ordered the soup for starter and steak & chips for Main course ,the food was as bad as the night before and I didn't walked this time as I chose Room service . I would not recommend this hotel and won't be back for sure even though i am a gold member with Best Western. Pat

I understand that on the evening when you chose the burger staff had asked you if you would like something else which you declined, a refund was also offered. Lovely old house with a lovely garden only a short distance from ipswich town but in quiet location. Friendly staff. high quality food which when they have offers is excellant value. Have stayed twice and would always choose to use this one

"Quick night in Ipswich"

Stayed one night at teh hotel. In the past looks like it would have been a coaching house or similar-lovely interior/architecture and grounds despite being situated adjacent to main road. Restaurant menu was pricey based on my needs so ate from the Bar Menu which was more than adequate. Rump steak, cooked rare was decent along with the chips, peas, onion rings and mushrooms. Frankly, I wasn't feeling great and was tired form four hours plus drive so ate and went to room. Staff very helpful and friendly. Breakfast was comprehensive though I didn't eat much so can't comment on cooked full English etc but I assume it would be decent enough. The place seems to cater for businessmen/women and is quite small, warm,staff friendly, rooms were very clean and wifi was fine too. Plenty of space for parking etc and would definitely stay again. Very easy to get too off the main road too.

"Building needs re vamp staff great"

I stayed here for one night on a business trip. The hotel was hard to find in the dark as its blends in with the houses and not lit like other hotels, appears more like a B&B. There is a car park at the rear. The receptionist was great, the hotel was quiet and the receptionist served me at the bar, seemed to have all roles. The room was okay in size, the bathroom couldn't be smaller, however, just enough room for the toilet, basin and shower. Everything was very clean however and wifi connection was good. There is tea/coffee making facilities and biscuits in the room. Bed was firm. Breakfast was fantastic, served by the same receptionist from the night before and was the best 'English' breakfast I have had for a long while and I travel extensively. There was far too much for me to finish. The fabric of the building is tired and could do with a freshen up, hopefully without spoiling its 1960's charm. I would definitely return if business brings me this way again.

Looking tired but its was still a good place to stay. I had a ground floor room which was close to reception so was slightly worried that i might be bothered by noise but it was OK. The reception staff were really friendly and I was very pleased with the room and the food in the bar. The internet was gratifyingly good as lots of hotels are so slow and i needed to do some work on the computer

This is a hotel whose building and fixture and furnishings cry out for investment and restoration. But in the face of a declining property, the staff are wonderful! A superb manager- but all concerned are warm, friendly, obliging and helpful. The food too is excellent- we had a truly delicious evening meal and a terrific breakfast. Well done to all concerned!

I have stayed at this hotel for the last 3 weeks and have found it to be a really great place. The room as been both spacious comfortable and well appointed. The staff have been friendly, approachable yet retaining a professional approach to their work. The food has been amazing and varied in the available choice, my favourite has to be the lamb and fish dishes. if you are looking for a quiet place to stay with great food and friendly staff this has to be the place for you.

The staff were all very pleasant and helpful. They seem to rotate duties between reception, dining room and bar. The hotel is on a quiet road on the quiet side of Ipswich yet handy for all amenities, including a couple of nice country walks. If you're without a car, it's on the main bus route to Stowmarket, which passes through some small villages. My room was billed as a "cosy twin" and was certainly more than big enough for my needs and comfortable. I liked having the little bar downstairs; and the very friendly staff, who were happy to make my nephew a cup of coffee while I had a glass of wine one evening. Breakfast buffet was good (although second-rate pastries). On my last morning, I had ordered the vegetarian breakfast which was superb. The veg sausages were not fake meat, but a savory vegetable mix. My nephew's breakfast (full English) was too much, even for him! Good fresh coffee. I wouldn't hesitate to stay here again.

This was via a deals website and was fantastic. We enjoyed a really tasty 3 course meal and had an excellent cooked breakfast. The room was a little small but perfectly clean and comfortable for 1 night. The staff were really pleasant and helpful.

"5 STAR FOR FOOD"

We stayed here with friends in the out buildings, these were in need of a revamp. the bed was comfortable, which gave us a good nights sleep. Now for the good points. We ate in the restaurant both nights which was First Class. It was presented and served in a way you would expect from a 5 star restaurant. It was plentiful and hot. The staff were also first class, nothing was to much trouble. If the rooms were to be refurbished then this would be a little Gem for any one visiting the area.

"not the smallest room I've ever stayed in.."

We were in Ipswich to watch eldest son play rugby at a tournament. The drive was long and boring, the first day of rugby was exciting and then we drove to our hotel accommodation for the night. The blurb said that it was quiet - and they weren't wrong - you do need the sat nav, you'd never find it otherwise. Made up from an old house and its outbuildings, the hotel is quaint and obviously reasonably historic. The room wasn't the smallest I've ever stayed in, but it comes close but the cost was reasonable for what you got - the room was bijou but well presented, comfortable bed, nice furnishings. The ensuite had mould and could have done with a bit of a revamp - bit old and dated. We skipped breakfast for 2 reasons - 1. we had to be up early to go watch day 2 of the rugby (Sunday breakfast didn't start until 8am) and 2. the cost - £11 for breakfast, which I know is common in such hotels but seemed a bit steep - we found a much better, cheaper alternative a mile away (see other review). The room was quiet until next door arrived - then it sounded like they moving in with us - this was repeated the following morning when they left. Overall this is a nice little hotel, out of the way and quiet - but it just feels like they could do better with just a little thought

"Wonderful stay"

I have stayed here many times with my partner and family and my dad stays here a lot on business. It is a lovely little hotel, with everything you need. My dad stays in at least 60 different hotels a year, for business and rates this as his all time favourite hotel. The breakfast is delicious and the staff are extremely friendly and accommodating. I would definitely recommend the hotel to anyone.

We stayed for four nights, in a very nice room in this quiet part of the city. We travelled around the area, and this hotel was a good base for doing just that. We dined only the once, but were served superb food. Very friendly staff, and good safe parking. We did not have the breakfast option, as we thought it a bit pricey! A good break, thanks Best Western.

Stayed here with my family and partner in the outside accommodation which was perfect for us! Very clean, comfy beds staff was very friendly... Even though the hotel is very small it has charm. It's that small that the receptionist served us breakfast! Breakfast wasn't that good- cold eggs and burnt toast. Value for money is good though. Probably would return if I ever went back to Ipswich.

The actual hotel was a bit disappointing as it was not in a very attractive location and there was nowhere to sit outside and have coffee or drinks etc. Our downstairs room near reception and the hotel toilet, was quite small. However the wonderful food and lovely dining room made up for this. The hotel staff were all extremely helpful and friendly. We stayed for three days and were able to visit lovely places in Suffolk. We really enjoyed our stay.
