"Massive Refurbishment needed"

User 01/03/2020

Firstly, the staff bare fantastic. Polite and professional. The Hotel is old and in need of a massive overhaul. I stayed on the 3rd floor and the stairs were out of order because the rood is leaking that badly. My room was spacious and the bed very comfortable. The paint in my room was pealing badly and the decor had been badly touched up. Parking was ok with spaces right next to the hotel and i believe some others no so far away. Again, the staff were great but best Western need to pump some money into the place as the overall decor, fixtures and fittings are letting the place down badly. The premier in less than a mile away is a cleaner option. Staff 5 stars!

"Excellent service, friendly staff and comfortable rooms."

User 24/02/2020

The Grand is not your typical chain hotel. It is full of character with some really interesting features and architecture. The rooms are very comfortable and clean. All of the staff are welcoming, friendly and helpful. Breakfast is always delicious with plenty of choice including fresh fruit, pastries, yogurts and of course cooked breakfast including veggie/vegan options. The coffee is excellent too!

"If only the rest matched the rooms"

medicontour, Newcastle upon Tyne, United Kingdom 19/02/2020

The free parking offered is limited so get there early. The exterior looks run round as did the public areas once inside. The rooms how ever couldn't of been nicer, great size, comfy beds and great size bathrooms. It was like I'd walked into an totally different place from the run down corridors to get to my room. Ventured down to the bar for food but general feeling was a no, looked like alot of regulars favoured it as an alternative to spoons. The area it's in doesn't help with alot of people hanging about you wouldnt want to be (not a snob, just saying) Staff (the one I seen) was nice enough.

"Don't use the stairs"

ElaineJ184, Newcastle upon Tyne, United Kingdom 18/02/2020

We stayed for 1 night and it was the night of the storm, we thought the window in our room was going to blow in. We stayed on 3rd floor and the roof was leaking to the point the stairs were out of use and we had to use the lift, which seems strange to use an electric lift when there is leaking water. We were advised the next day that the 3rd floor was being closed due to the leaking but to be honest the hotel needs a massive referb throughout as it has potential to be a very decent hotel. Bed was comfortable, bathroom could do with an update, locks on the bedroom doors reminded us of a horror film but if you just want somewhere to rest your head then it's fine. No hairdryer in the room and the phone in our room didn't work, we ordered food as it was late and the hotel staff said he tried to call us but as the phone didn't work we obviously didn't get the call .. our room was at the back so we could hear all the police cars sirens (a lot of) as i believe the police station is close to this hotel. Like i say the hotel has potential to be great but at the moment it seems not much care and attention is on the rooms.

"Amazing night stay"

hazieg2020, Hartlepool, United Kingdom 26/01/2020

I can not fault this hotel. The room was perfect and so clean. The staff were so very friendly and go out of their way to help you. The breakfast offers a lovely variety and is all cooked fresh. The price is more than reasonable. I would highly recommend and look forward to my next stay.

"Excessive Noise"

paulwblack33, Gloucester, United Kingdom 20/12/2019

The works Christmas Dinner Disco was noisy, guests were advised on arrival that music would be played until midnight.Noise from the party carried on much later. Next to my room was a fire door which lacked sound proofing closure strips, consequently other guests were allowing it to slam shut which continued until 04.15 in the morning. At 5.40 I was woken up by staff talking loudly past my door. After very little sleep and a cold cooked breakfast had to dive 450 miles home.

User 15/12/2019

We could not fault this Hotel, from the Check in to the Room. The Breakfast was spot on Fresh Fruit or Cereal to start. Then a very nice Cooked Breakfast in a very pleasant Dining Room. The Check out was very swift also. Free Parking was a Added Bonus. All in All a very enjoyable stay, we will return.

User 12/11/2019

Arrived at 11am for a conference and went to the bar for a coffee until commencement time. The bar was very busy with delegates waiting for service. One member of staff on duty with at least 20 delegates waiting for service. Appalling level of service and complete disregard for customers in the bar.

"Nice overnight business stay great service and location"

JandBonhols, Wigan, United Kingdom 09/11/2019

Met by Cheryl and checked in really quickly. Room large and comfortable. Bed really comfy. Nice clean and warm. Fish and chips really well cooked. The prawn cocktail was substantial for a starter . Really friendly and helpful staff who couldn't do enough for you and my personal thanks to them Great location . Stairs out of order due to leak (This would appear to be just temporary though)and lift for three persons only. Parking is free in the adjacent council carpark until 8 am. Alternatively you can get a permit from the reception to park across the road for a small fee

X3369YUcarolinew, Durham, United Kingdom 31/10/2019

I stayed over after my son's wedding last night. Lovely hotel and staff generally. The reception guy read off a screen, no eye contact which put me off at first. Room nice, but no where to charge phone, noisy tap all night. The DJ was not that good. The bridal suite was big but nothing special about it for just married couple. The parking was also poor. Just a few improvements would make it perfect. But overall was a nice stay, breakfast nice, but no pot of tea. Just hot water machine and help yourself. What happened to personal service.

"A little disappointing but an improvement on my last visit"

Alan M, Durham, United Kingdom 30/10/2019

An old building so don't expect all the mod-cons. Some fittings were loose, tv didn't have any bbc channels but as a place to sleep it was fine, providing there's no party going on in the conference room, then you'll have to put up with noise to around midnight.

"Great hotel"

User 28/10/2019

Great hotel very friendly staff the rooms are very clean and tidy, function room was beautiful as we attended a friends ball , full fried breakfast with the choice of tea coffee juice etc , would definitely stay again x

"Family stay"

Tom M, Motherwell, United Kingdom 06/10/2019

Great location, clean well appointed rooms, great choice and quality of food, both in the evening and at breakfast. Friendly and attentive staff who can't do enough for you, nothing is a problem for them to make sure you enjoy your stay

"A Grand Experience"

Barry W, Gateshead, United Kingdom 29/09/2019

Spent a night here in September 2019. I had no real reason to be in Hartlepool, I just felt like I needed a night away and I picked 'Pool because despite of it's proximity to where I live, I'd never been there before. Stayed at the Grand after reading reviews and it being in my budget range. I am glad I did. It is a lovely hotel, the reception was very friendly and polite, room was a good size, very comfy with televison, tea and coffee making facilities and en suite bath and shower. Incredibly comfortable bed meant I had a good nights sleep. Area was quiet as well. Breakfast was gorgeous and the reception staff were excellent. I actually wish I had booked longer. You are about a 5-10 minute walk from Hartlepool train station and it's location is handy for shops (the shopping centre is over the road), pubs and takeaway and there is a bus stop about 30 seconds away. Would happily stay again.

"Very comfortable "

jf9842, Gosport, United Kingdom 29/09/2019

Chose hotel as near to office .. huge place and almost like stepping back in time .. probably needs a little updating but the rooms were so comfortable and the staff amazingly friendly and helpful always time for a chat .. made for a very enjoyable week away

"R Randall"

Super friendly staff. Nice and clean rooms x also notified of the issue with water n given 2 large bottles of water and was advised if we needed anything else just to call reception We will totally be back again x

"Comfortable and full of character"

User 25/09/2019

Helpful and friendly staff. I was made to feel safe and relaxed, allowing me to eat outside of the bar area (which as a tee-total lone traveller) was very much appreciated. The room was clean and comfortable, the bathroom superb. The rooms seem well noise insulated too.

mutmat, Newcastle upon Tyne, United Kingdom 20/09/2019

The hotel was good overall but the balcony outside our room was very dirty and distracted from the experience, I would stay again and I hope my comment urges someone to look at the balcony of room 102

"Average work stay"

GemM120, Leamington Spa, United Kingdom 16/09/2019

This is a beautiful old hotel and is probably as you would expect. Large, tall rooms which were a little dated but clean and tidy. Probably gets a little too cold in winter and a little too hot in summer type of building. Car Parking is available next door outside of opening hours of the building it belongs to or just over the road with a hotel permit at £3 a night. I didnt find this to be an issue. The staff were lovely. During my visit, the restaurant was manned by a very lovely bar man who I felt a little sorry for but I also understand when its quiet mid week that they wont want to pay for dedicated staff. The issue was the food was literally the worst plate of food I have ever eaten (or not eaten). I didnt even have the heart to tell the guy how awful it was as he was so nice. It took ages to come out and then I wish it hadnt. I only dared have the cereal for breakfast the next day which was fine! If in the area, I would recommend this hotel, you get what you pay for but definitely eat out at another restaurant.

"Birthday party disaster"

penseivat, London, United Kingdom 09/09/2019

Stayed at the Grand Hotel to attend a planned 80th birthday party for my older brother, travelling a little over 300 miles from the south of England. His daughter, son in law, and family, travelled from Scotland. His daughter had arranged the celebration 3 weeks before, and spoke to a member of staff several times.regarding the arrangements. It wasn't that big a group, just 10 people, but it was an important occasion. Sadly, the evening seemed to go from bad to worse. There was no evening waiting staff arranged, leaving one of the two barmen from the very busy adjacent bar, having to carry out that job as well as tending bar. Two of the people attending are vegetarians and chose an Indian based vegetable platter for their starter, only to be told that that dish was not available (the hotel has an Indian restaurant in the basement!). The 'Grand Prawn Salad' was a couple of leaves on a plate, some, possibly, quickly defrosted prawns spread over the top and smothered in a sauce. If that was the 'Grand', would hate to see the 'normal'. Those who ordered the fish and chips received a lovely, crispy, battered, piece of cod, with only a thin layer of cod inside the batter and and at least one plate was sent back. To add insult to injury, my brother, whose birthday we were celebrating, received his main course after everyone else had eaten theirs! The waiter cum barman had to search for an ice bucket for the wine and the brandys with the coffee came in small water tumblers - they didn't have, or couldn't find, brandy glasses, so small wine glasses were requested. To be honest, we felt sorry for the obviously embarrassed young man who was left with the job of serving us, all due to the apparent lack of planning by someone higher up in the hotel chain. I have stayed at The Grand Hotel several times before but only had breakfasts and had no complaints. The single rooms were large enough for one person for a couple of nights, as it was on this occasion, with a comfortable bed and a large enough en suite bathroom. One asset the hotel has, is Karen, the delightful young lady who serves the breakfasts. Her cheery smile and disposition brightened up the grayest of mornings. However much she is being paid, it's not enough. She deserves more. I understand that my brother, who is involved in ex Service oranisations, arranges Chritmas functions at The Grand Hotel and has always had good experiences, which is one of the reasons the hotel was chosen for this much smaller function. I can only hope the next Christmas dinner is a lot better than the one we had. Sorry, Grand Hotel, a poor show, and you certainly could do better. Just as well I'm retired and not "The Hotel Inspector". One other thing the hotel should sort out is the car parking. There is a large car park next to the hotel, but from 8am to 6pm Monday to Friday, it is for the use of Council Offices staff, and the hotel uses a small car parking area across the road at a cost of £3 per 24 hours. Between 6pm and 8am Monday to Friday, and during the weekend, hotel guests can use the car park next door. However, If you arrive late afternoon, as I did, and found the over the road car park full, and the council office car park barrier down, even though there were plenty of parking spaces, there is nowhere to park after booking in and luggage taken to the room. Fortunately, the nearby Morrisons supermarket afforded a place to park my car while I used their coffee shop until 6pm. I discovered they also do evening meals, which I shall bear in mind in my next visit to my home town. .

"Great value and lovely staff"

User 03/09/2019

BW hotels are always quirky, never new and not often in the “best” part of town and The Grand doesn't disappoint. HOWEVER - big, clean and comfy room for two with full breakfast for £92 for 2 nights - excellent value. Also some wonderful turn of the 20th century features such as Hugh stained glass windows, an amazing ballroom and a tiled floor most middle-class renovators would die for... the bar wasn't to my taste however there is a lovely residents lounge where you can take your drinks and sit in comfort. If we're back up in the NE we will use again. Big call out to Karen on the breakfast shift - full dining room and she was cheery and efficient - thanks

"2nd Time Here"

victoriasG3978CQ, London, United Kingdom 02/09/2019

Excellent as always, we take a suite and the rooms are beautiful, rustic and in keeping as the hotel is 200 years old, give or take. Quiet and immaculate. Great location and great facilities. Staff always polite, friendly and helpful and a few charismatic locals that are willing to chat with you if you so choose.

"Friendly faces"

972lynnee, Bradford, United Kingdom 31/08/2019

Stayed three nights at the Grand while taking a trip down Memory Lane. The hotel is beautiful on the ground floor: high ceilings, fabulous chandeliers, Victorian mosaic tiling and the ballroom is out of this world - if you stay, make sure you get a look at it. The breakfast was good with fresh fruit, yogurt and Danish pastries available. The cooked was very nice. My single room was small and adequate, with a spacious shower room. It was nice and quiet - apart from the early morning seagulls! The staff were very pleasant and welcoming. The Friday night entertainment, a Queen tribute band, was a bonus. Free car parking was available.

"Back again"

Peter G, Blakeney, United Kingdom 19/08/2019

Back to this Hotel again, although it is in need of some care it is great if you are a 60's fan as most of the furniture is from then! The Hotel has massive potential with an absolutely palacial ballroon which does not seem to be promoted enough. Food is acceptable but what really makes this Hotel is the staff, they are all dedicated to the Hotel and have a pride in the history of the place. Very much in my vision was the trainee receptionist Debbie who would go the extra mile to make sure you were completely happy with things during your stay, nothing was too much bother, always happy and smiling a real assett to the Hotel!

"Seaton Carew"

knapt0n, Easingwold, United Kingdom 11/08/2019

This hotel was not easy to find by car and the car parking is hit and miss. There are only so many allocated parking spaces across the road which I did not realise. I didn't feel my car was secure. The hotel is a lovely building but a bit tired, my room on the 2nd floor was quite spacious and the shower room adequate. The breakfast was good and the staff very helpful and friendly. Taxis stop outside the hotel if you need to go to the Marina which I did one night to eat. It is in a very central location in town if that's what you want

Paul R, General Manager at Best Western Grand Hotel, responded to this review
Thank you for your review. For your future stays, please be aware there is a car park next to us with free parking (not available mon-fri 8am-6pm) - otherwise there is plenty of paid parking within minutes of the hotel. We look forward to your next visit Many Thanks

"Very poor customer service"

User 01/08/2019

We stayed here on new yrs eve was nothing but problems then me and daughter stayed on 27th July wen on arrival we were told I'd booked a single room for an adult and child so I got my email up to show the lad at reception that I'd booked a double room that was already paid for they stuck us at the top of the building in a single room that hadn't been cleaned and iv got all photos to prove there was buckets of water on the stairs going up bags of laundry on the hall ways which I tripped over then wen we returned after our night out we were getting bed wen 2 complete strangers starting banging on our door which was 3 flights of stairs but no one on reception seen them come in even though u have to buzz to be let in then a member of there staff started swearing at us was the worse stay iv ever had

Thank you for your review. It is always a delight to read reviews from guests who have been removed from our hotel by the police.

"What a wreck! "

User 30/07/2019

Be very wary of this hotel! To start we arrived at the check in desk and had to wait in a queue. The reception has one computer and one staff member. It is a very large hotel. Whilst queueing to be checked in the woman in front of us explained how she had not been given the room she paid for. This put us on the back foot. We were then checked in by a rather disgruntled employee, forgivable though as there was a wedding on and he was rushed off his feet. We got our things and went to our room. We had booked an executive double as it was mine and my partners anniversary. Not something we can usually afford to upgrade to, but we thought we would treat ourselves! The room we booked using the pictures on the website, was NOT the room we were given. We were given a standard double. If standard can be a term that's used when the room has a broken tap and lack of cleanliness. Two dead flys were found straight away. To give a benefit of a doubt we went to get the room rectified. Long story short after speaking with the rudest manager I've ever spoken with, who categorically refused to entertain the fact that we had been given a standard room, I eventually managed to get him to agree to charge us a standard room rate rather than the executive. He replied with "that's OK, it's only ten pounds..." Breakfast in the morning was average. The females working in the morning were absolutely darling, such a contrast from the men the night before. This would have been a lovely hotel in the 70's sadly no tangible investment has been made since... Point to make, best westerns are privately owned hotels under the best Western franchise. The manager delighted in telling us that a complaint would go no further than him. We shall not be returning.

Paul R, General Manager at Best Western Grand Hotel, responded to this review
Thank you for your review - however inaccurate. After you made a scene at our reception in front of a number of guests, our receptionist was forced to call the manager after you refused his assistance in dealing with it including, I believe an offer of a complimentary drink at the bar - and instead chose to intimidate him. You also chose to make your issue known to everyone else around you which is not a particularly considerate way to deal with an issue. In our discussion, you were advised that you were in fact in an Executive room that you had paid for, for which there is only a £10 upgrade fee. You clearly expected more for the very modest room rate you paid, and so I was happy to suggest that we refunded you to pay the standard double price and keep you in the Executive room. I am sorry you found me to be rude - I feel I handled a difficult situation with a difficult guest as well as could reasonable be expected. I apologise that a fly was found in your room - although you were adamant that the fly had been there longer than since the room had been cleaned, but I am not sure how you knew this. Regardless, thank you for your fair and honest review of our Hotel.

User 29/07/2019

"Nice location, Hotel is in need of deep clean and possible refurb"

User 24/07/2019

Hotel is well situated to all amenities of Hartlepool and surrounding areas. The room I had (Executive Double Room 214) was shabby in decor, suffered from poor Maintanince, low water pressure, and no air conditioning (not standard in any of the rooms) Hotel Staff are helpful and obliging to raised issues although there is little that can be done without a refurb. Overall not a disaster, but there are more modern hotels a stone throw away that will be more modern and offer better quality amenities. Positives: Building has great architecture and has a nostalgic feel about it Staff are always very helpful and friendly Breakfast is fresh and not from a hot plate buffet Location is superb and well situated for shops and distance to motorways and A roads Parking is free (Permit from hotel) Shopping Centre is 30 second walk away

Paul R, General Manager at Best Western Grand Hotel, responded to this review
Thank you for your review. We are working on some room improvements, but unfortunately in such an old and characterful building we are unable to add AC, and the water pressure can be an issue due to the old pipe system. I do hope we can welcome you back to the hotel soon Many Thanks

"Lovely traditional hotel, but in need of a refurbishment"

Sophie D, London 09/07/2019

I stayed here with my partner and his family for two nights a couple of weeks ago, as we were attending a funeral nearby. It is a lovely traditional hotel, and "grand" as the name suggests, although I wouldn't say it was refurbished, as was advertised. We stayed in a room on the second floor, which had all the facilities we needed, plus a big, comfortable bed, and a big bathroom. The only downside was that you couldn't change the temperature on the shower, which seemed to be fixed to boiling hot, and had to be careful stepping out of the bath / shower, as it was extremely slippery, so not good for those with mobility difficulties. We ate in the restaurant both evenings, and although the staff got our food order wrong, ie I was given a chicken burger when I'd ordered chicken and chips, and the food seemed to take a long time to arrive, the staff were very professional, and the food was fantastic, as was the breakfast. However, they took a long time to take our orders when we wanted a cooked breakfast on the second morning. As for being newly refurbished, the hotel looked as though it was in need of a refurbishment, and I would definitely return there if and when it is refurbished!

A hotel that is dilapidated, tired with a roof like a sieve The staff are wonderful always cheerful and willing to help who are working under extremely trying conditions. Lacking some serious investment to improve the hotel throughout.

This place needs a facelift, the rooms are tired and the roof leaks! On the plus side, the staff are really friendly and helpful. The food is quite nice although my bacon, egg & beans was tiny not even a full rasher of bacon!

"One Nighter"

523AndrewS523, Epworth, United Kingdom 01/06/2019

The receptionists were great. I guess for £39 you shouldn't complain but the net curtain in the room definitely needed replacing, the shower was dangerously scalding hot and unadjustable and the smell of cigarette smoke on the 2nd floor was unsavoury (I hope they caught the culprits). Fantastic building and great staff.

Paul R, General Manager at Best Western Grand Hotel, responded to this review
Thank you for your review. We are working on some room improvements and we do charge anyone caught smoking for additional cleaning in the hopes that this deters people from it.

"Decent hotel close to local amenities"

User 23/04/2019

Stayed here a couple of weeks ago in one of the suite rooms. The rooms were very nice with a gorgeous bathroom with spa bath. However the decor in the comunial areas of this hotel let it down. Also the bar area is very dated with very few seats. Other then this a nice cheap hotel

Paul R, General Manager at Best Western Grand Hotel, responded to this review
Thank you for your review. We have our guest lounge with plenty of seats if you would like to enjoy your drink in a different atmosphere? :-)

"Short stay."

User 20/04/2019

This hotel is in the centre of Hartlepool. Only 150 yards from the main shopping mall where the variety of shops has something for every pocket including places to eat and drink. A dedicated car parking facility is just across the road at a charge of £3-00 a day which is good value for a town centre. The room that I had was at the rear of the building. The bed was comfortable and peaceful for a good nights sleep. On suite bathroom with a shower cleaned and serviced daily. Overall I would recommend this hotel as a good place to stay. The lady at reception ( Bethan ) was very helpful with any questions during my stay. Overall a happy customer.

ge01960, Bradford, United Kingdom 18/04/2019

There were a group of 15 staying in my party and although the hotel is looking a bit frayed around the edges it was a very enjoyable stay. Staff were friendly and very helpful so that was a plus. A bit disappointed that the restaurant was closed but we found another nearby.

"Faded and Lost Grandeur"

davidjjhall1, Worthing, United Kingdom 08/04/2019

This once grand hotel has stood for around 120 years and unfortunately has had a major roof problem prior to our arrival. The data we had indicated that there were 30 onsite car parking spaces this is incorrect, also the restaurant housed in the basement was closed. Our room was on the top floor serviced by a lift that you pushed the down button to go up. The hotel décor and furniture are in a sad condition, but well inline with its surroundings which are extremely depressing. .

"Faded grandeur but on the up"

Julie W, Bristol, England, United Kingdom 31/03/2019

The Grand is a lovely hotel that has seen better days, but is being refurbished with care. We had a fantastic deal through Best Western's winter sale with a nightly b & b rate in a huge suite with a lovely breakfast that worked out a little cheaper than the rate for a bog standard Premier Inn room. And the Grand has so much more character! Yes, it is fading in parts but the newly renovated breakfast room & the lounge have restored its previous grandeur with great modern touches (enormous windows, nice velvet sofas, good lighting and art). Staff were lovely - an initial problem with a room was sorted out extremely quickly & pleasantly. It was great to meet such an enthusiastic team who were clearly proud of their hotel and its restoration - one reception team member took time to show us the beautiful ballroom and talk about the hotel's history (and to give us useful tips of what to see in Hartlepool). The breakfast was really good too - nicely laid out continental items (with a good fresh fruit selection) and perfectly cooked to order hot items. Thank you for all for a relaxing time - your welcome was excellent!

A central hotel where we have stayed before but is in decline & requires refurbishment The staff were excellent . the restaurant was closed for work . the room was suffering from a water leak through the ceiling & the shower control was jamming

"Grand by name only"

Dave M, Birmingham, United Kingdom 27/03/2019

This hotel is Grand by name only. It says above that there is free parking but you will be charged £3. If the few parking spaces across the road you will be directed to the free council car park next door but you will need to move by 7.30 or you wll get a ticket, so whats the £3 for i asked. I asked for food as it is advertised as 24 hour room service but was told the kitchen was shut and there is no food. I was directed to a pub down the road. So onto the room.On the way i took the stairs and was greeted by the 3 people on the stairs with hoodies and dark coats with hoods up, very worrying. The room is Large enough and with tea and coffee etc. The bed is awful and the pillows are awful. The TV is on the wall but you need to scroll for a while to get a channel that works. Worst night sleep in a hotel ever. So its now breakfast time and being as i was told they had no kitchen i was surprised when offered a FULLY COOKED FRESH ENGLISH BREAKFAST. Considering they had no kitchen the night before this was amazing news. Overall very poor. The advertised rate was not what we paid. The parking is not free. There is no 24 hour room service although one day there might be.

Great price for a lovely room and spacious bathroom in the centre of town for a Friday night. Excellent location and friendly staff. The hotel was undergoing a refurbishment. It will be great to see The Grand restored to it's former glory.

"Hotel with broken facilities"

User 18/03/2019

I booked the hotel as £54 was a good deal and the cheapest in town for my needs but... the staff that came to my room to fix the hot water was misrable, not very polite at all and it felt like he just told me what i wanted to hear. I informed him that its discrasful that there was no hot water and that i was unable to shower which resulted in me having a cold shower before my night out. Same again the next day no hot water and another couple had the same issue but 12 hours after it was reported still nothing had been done

Paul R, General Manager at Best Western Grand Hotel, responded to this review
Thank you for your review. We did have a hot water issue this weekend where one of our boilers servicing a limited number of rooms broke down. Engineers were called at the earliest opportunity but unfortunately they were not able to attend until lunch time on Sunday. We do apologise for the inconvenience but unfortunately there was nothing more that we could do.

843aly, newcastle 17/03/2019

My son stayed here for 3 night and was fined 75 pounds for parking in designated park area after taking so long to check-in and purchase parking ticket he was 10 minutes late in getting ticket back to vehicle... when he phoned best western he was told ... this often happens...will never use best western again disgusted would same apply to anyone disabled I wonder they would never get back to parking area in time furious isn't the word

Paul R, General Manager at Best Western Grand Hotel, responded to this review
I am very sorry to hear of this issue. If you could please email me directly at i would like to investigate why check-in took so long as it is usually a very efficient process. With regards to the parking fine itself, unfortunately we do not issue any parking fine, so this fine is either from the council or a separate parking company - neither of which we have any influence to cancel parking charges. I would suggest that you dispute the charge and we will be more than happy to verify that you were a guest with us. Many Thanks

"Cheap but not so cheerful"

PeterR719, Ilkley, United Kingdom 14/03/2019

Off to a good start with a very warm and helpful greeting from the receptionist, arriving early, who kindly took our bags until room ready at 1400 Our room was very cold, not helped by the draught blowing through the old wooden single glazed windows, covered with dark nets overlooking a dark yard with rubbish skips and beer barrels On checking with reception we were informed no heating till 1700, the room fan heater didn't work, no comfortable residents lounge to sit in just a noisy sports bar with 3 TVs After some badgering we were given the portable heater from reception Went out for evening meal as the Restaurant ( Indian) is being refurbished Indian food would not really have suited anyway On return the room was warm and it has to be said spotless A good nights sleep was spoilt by the rattling window frames A shower was impossible, only cold water available, this, reported to reception A super breakfast was enjoyed Returning the second night around 1600 we were delighted to find the room heating on and cozy, the shower was fixed but only look warm and unusable Another night of rattling windows, a great breakfast and we departed Not such a good stay , surprisingly having used other Best Western hotels with total success

Paul R, General Manager at Best Western Grand Hotel, responded to this review
Thank you for your review. I am sorry to confirm that we did have a boiler breakdown which was rectified as quickly as possible by an engineer who had to be called in. Our new residents lounge is almost ready to go, you may have seen us working on it while you were here, and probably had breakfast in there. This will soon be more closed off from the sports bar so should feel much more comfortable. With the Indian Restaurants owners having the restaurant currently closed, we are looking at alternative for our guests and should have something in place by the end of the month. Many Thanks

"Food breakfast absolutely delicious"

"Old style hotel"

johnhC7988NH, Clevedon, United Kingdom 24/02/2019

Plesently surprised by the hotel. I got a really cheap deal on bed and breakfast, so I wasn't expecting much. The room was very clean and tidy. A little dated but all my needs cared for. Worst thing was probably the shower. Over bath shower, not very powerful, the tap got in the way and it didn't drain well. It was nice to have windows that open, but not sure about the health and safety aspect. Breakfast was excellent.

Paul R, General Manager at Best Western Grand Hotel, responded to this review
Thank you for your review. I am pleased you enjoyed your stay and our maintenance team are already reviewing the issues you mentioned.

"Old style Hartlepool"

247alant, Manchester, United Kingdom 24/02/2019

The Grand Hotel was in an earlier life, THE hotel to stay in Hartlepool. Now really showing its' age. No in house resturant. Breakfast good served in the sports bar. Stairs to 3rd floor need urgent attention due to roof leaks. Problem if lift breaks down. Advise to keep windows closed before dawn. To avoid the early morning chorus by the seagull colony that have taken residence in the derlict Wesley chapel next door. However I will return on my next visit to the 'puddle' Yours' Exile monkeyhanger.

Paul R, General Manager at Best Western Grand Hotel, responded to this review
Thank you for your review. The restaurant is currently closed for refurbishment, however as it is not owned or managed by us, we are unable to say when it will re-open. We are however looking at alternative ways to supply evening meals. Many Thanks

hazel872017, Hartlepool, United Kingdom 11/02/2019

An absolutely amazing night at this stunning hotel. Gorgeous room and friendly staff who were so helpful. The hotel is in a great location and the price was very reasonable. Would highly recommend this hotel.

"Zero integrity"

natashal277, Hartlepool, United Kingdom 02/02/2019

When you ring up 5 hours in advance to ask if they will show a rugby game the receptionist put me on hold 4 times just to check if they would play it in bar 1908 and kept forgetting the type of sport and then kept forgetting the team name must have said Leeds about 50 times and she still had to ask. Turned up for the game and the bar staff were very unhelpful. Went to the reception desk and asked if she was the person on the desk from 12 and she said no but would see what she could do, the bar staff faffed around with the remote but put the football on when there was bearly anyone in the pub. Come all the way especially to watch the game and they wouldn't put it on one half of the bar because 2 people had 'tickets on' as in probably £2 bets, extremely unprofessional. The pints of beer supposedly premium kronenburg nearly £4 tasted awful. Have stayed here in the past over summer and the rooms where unbearably hot and the smells from the Indian restaurant kitchen filled the hotel. Will not be returning to this establishment.

Paul R, General Manager at Best Western Grand Hotel, responded to this review
I am very sorry to hear that we were not able to show the specific match you were asking for. We will always try to cater for our guests, however if we have had a few specific requests we are unable to honour them all and whilst we can not please everyone, we do try to show the events that are of interest to the majority in the bar. I do hope this does not put you off returning in the future.

"Good stay"

User 22/01/2019

Good stay here in one of their huge rooms. Breakfast was good in a nicely decorated room. Was a little noisy at times but building is old and so sound proofing was not priority at the time. Felt the bathroom needed a walk in shower and blind on the window but otherwise no issues

Paul R, General Manager at Best Western Grand Hotel, responded to this review
Thank you for your review. We are pleased that you enjoyed your stay, and will work hard to act on your comments to improve your next visit. We look forward to welcoming you back soon!

"Lovely romantic break"

User 14/01/2019

Stayed here for a romantic break with my partner and took winter deal on the suite which was excellent value for money. Room was lovely and quiet considering the location. Building itself looks a little tired from the outside but I imagine it takes a lot of upkeep. Interior decor was lovely - modern but in keeping with the age of the building. Breakfast was lovely. Unable to sample restaurant as this is ran by a 3rd party and still seems to be closed for refurbishment which was a shame but the marina is only a short walk away where we found plenty places for a drink and food.Mattresses are very firm but rooms themselves are lovely

Paul R, General Manager at Best Western Grand Hotel, responded to this review

"Heating did not function"

electriziti, London, United Kingdom 14/12/2018

Cleanliness seemed ok, I only stayed a night with my partner (for football) so luckily I didn't have to shower in the bath. The rooms are very spacious, and the hotel is close to the mall which is nice. The hotel was quiet for us, not many people around at all. But the rooms were too hot - the heating was on full blast! I called reception and someone came to have a look, yet the dials to turn it up or down did nothing. Then the worker said that heating isn't adjustable, it's the same for every room (?) why did he only say it after all of that hassle. Went to sleep with all the windows open eventually, was like a ghost town.

Paul R, General Manager at Best Western Grand Hotel, responded to this review
Thank you for your review. A very limited number of rooms have adjustable heating, with the rest being either on or off depending on if heating is on for the whole hotel. I am very sorry that we could not resolve this for you on this occasion, however we are looking at options to resolve this. Many Thanks

"Great location, great value, large rooms and friendly staff.."

Stumpy12345, Reading 06/12/2018

I stayed at this Best Western in the centre of Hartlepool (only 2 minutes from the shopping centre). Parking is opposite with allocated parking permits. Very friendly staff, large rooms, great value, but some of the rooms needs updating and more modern decor.

Paul R, General Manager at Best Western Grand Hotel, responded to this review
Thank you for your review. I am happy to confirm that we are undergoing ongoing refurbishment work and hope the rooms will be updated for your next visit. Many Thanks

"Wonderful Wedding"

User 26/11/2018

We had the most wonderful day at our wedding here just on Saturday and the staff were amazing, they made sure everything was perfect and we had amazing compliments about the wedding meal and the buffet on the evening, everything was piping hot and delicious! Special thanks to Tilly, Lynn and Dianne (for finding my lost earring) and the rest of the team! I couldn't recommend it more and our room was also very comfortable. Thanks again for all of your hard work. Mr and Mrs Morgan.

"Comfortable hotel dinner disappointing"

Medic11, Bracknell 14/11/2018

Having driven 300 miles I was looking forward to the Indian restaurant as advertised on the website. I managed to park in the limited hotel parking opposite and collected a ticket from reception to display in the windshield. I was told when I checked in that the hotel did not do food but I could get a panini or a sandwich in the bar. The breakfast however was very good and plentiful. The room was comfortable with a nice big bed. All the staff were very friendly and helpful . When I checked out I asked for my company's address to be displayed on the invoice and was told that I could have the company address but they would not be able to register my Best Western points. I always stay in Best Western hotels and this has never been a problem before

Paul R, General Manager at Best Western Grand Hotel, responded to this review
Thank you for your review. I apologise that the restaurant was closed, they have had some maintenance issues and hope to be reopened in January after a refurbishment. I am glad that you enjoyed your stay and will discuss with our Reception Manager to see if we can still honour the points. Could you please email me at with details of your booking so that this can be investigated for you? Many Thanks

"Nice building rooms not great"

SussexBoydy, Sussex 11/11/2018

Stayed for one night last night in room 220. Curtains are hanging off the wall and one does not pull up. No hot water in shower - told reception but apparently maintenance man was not in until 2300pm. Rooms were very hot and you could not turn the radiators down. Taps in bath are so close to wall they grate when you turn them on or off. When you flush toilet it sounds like a jet engine. TV ok if you want to watch one channel. Again when I asked reception she said it was because of the wind and rain. Later same evening still not working although next doors was fine. However bed was very comfortable. Bar downstairs needs more chairs and was busy due to boxing on tv. Did not have breakfast here as it was £9 each. Walk over to Weatherspoons where it is £5 each and unlimited tea / coffee. Like I said lovely old building and ok for one night.

"Should be a beautiful hotel but hasn't been loved."

Margaret E, Glasgow, United Kingdom 06/11/2018

The hotel is housed in a beautiful, grand, Victorian building but the interior really lets it down. Over the years you can see that repairs have been done cheaply and little thought has been given to the decor. The the staff are warm and friendly but I had to wait a long time to check in due to an admin error with the guest in front. My colleagues had told me that the restaurant attached to the hotel was good but it was closed for maintenance. I wasn't offered any other options or information. The bar only had paninis available and frankly it was a bit rough, so I ended up getting a takeaway.

Paul R, General Manager at Best Western Grand Hotel, responded to this review
Thank you for your review. We are delighted to inform you of future plans to lift the hotel - new décor and furnishings are on the way for the bar and we have a new lounge area which will be exclusively for our hotel guests coming very soon! Many Thanks

"Work visit"

william6607, Maryport, United Kingdom 31/10/2018

One night stay, parked in council car park next door which is free at night but you have to be out by 08:00 Nice check in and large clean room with free WiFi,TV, coffee, tea and a large bathroom with shower. The hotel is having work done and the restaurant is closed, so we ate out on returning we had a beer in the bar which had a strong sewer smell which I can only assume is due to the building work. Breakfast was help yourself to toast, cereal, coffee, tea and a served cooked breakfast from a breakfast menu. The hotel would have been the top place in its day and still retains some of that charm. would stay again but would hope the restaurant was open.

Paul R, General Manager at Best Western Grand Hotel, responded to this review
Thank you for your review, The restaurant is not managed by the hotel, but I believe they are aiming to be open again towards the end of the month. We look forward to welcoming you back to the hotel in the near future and hope the restaurant team make the food worth the wait!

"Honest opinion"

User 30/10/2018

1. Arrived to be told my booking, which was made on the 29th of October was put through for the 19th of the same month by reception. That's, in the PAST!yes.Time travel. 2. My double room was now non-existent so i was put in a twin room with no working lights. 3.Replacement room is now single, TV isn't working, and no hot water to speak of. 4.No manager to discuss this problem with. I understand that the star system and room quality is reflected in the price, but good service doesnt cost a thing! So dissapointed, I have such modest expectations of hotels - as anyone should, but this is the first time I've resorted to leave a review for ANY accommodation. If you're on a work trip, or if this stay matters to you, just don't do it. Trust me.There are other options nearby.

"Lovely old hotel spoiled by traffic noise"

NerdyFerdy, Keswick 22/10/2018

This is a lovely old hotel with friendly / helpful staff that has seen better days (like the rest of the town centre). The rooms were very spacious and nicely decorated and the breakfast was quite good for a buffet. The hotel is spoiled by the drunks who watch sport in the bar and there is traffic noise throughout the night - wouldn't want to stay here in Summer when windows would have to be left open overnight.

Can't fault this hotel. We had a suite: Gorgeous and luxurious. Staff: very friendly and attentive. Location: couldn't be better. Located in town and 5 minutes walk to the marina. "Excellent Value Hotel"

istanbul187067, Doncaster, United Kingdom 03/09/2018

I stayed for 3 days whilst walking the newly opened stretch of the English Coastal Path. The cost of laess than £50 a night for single occupancy of a double room was excellent value.. the staff were friendly, the parking permit system was fine and the room was very good with an updated bathroom. The breakfast was good and the lady serving breakfast was efficient and friendly. An all-round excellent stay and well worth booking direct with the Best Western site.

"Lovely place "

Minicooper59, Middlesbrough 01/09/2018

Stayed here for one night last weekend for a night on the town with friends . Beautiful old building with lots of original period features . Our room was massive , spotlessly clean and lovely and cool considering the weather we have had lately , very big comfy bed . Bathroom nice and big . A bit tired in places as is the hotel but it's an old building you would expect things to need doing all the time .Breakfast was lovely as were all the staff we met very helpful and tentative . Would deffinately come again reasonable prices to stay in such a lovely building .

"Not the best "

saffy01, Birmingham, United Kingdom 31/08/2018

The room itself was fine...what I expected. The bathroom was not so great. The bath and shower looked a bit dirty. Luckily, my friend had a suite and I used her shower. I had ordered breakfast to my room. It looked great, but arrived on a dirty tray with at least 2 ants crawling around. When I told the girl at check out, I received a limp apology. Not great considering I paid extra for breakfast

"Watch out when parking"

Mark L, Northampton, United Kingdom 27/08/2018

When visiting this hotel make sure you register your car at reception and get a parking pass from them. When I visited the receptionist was very busy and I had to wait. In that time I received a parking ticket and had to pay a fine and the hotel refused to reimburse me. Nort a bad hotel however but let me down on this ocassion.

"No sleep in Hartlepool"

debenhams75, Middlesbrough, United Kingdom 22/08/2018

Booked this hotel on their own site Got a decent deal £55 including breakfast for 1 night Room was ok This is where the problems began Noise from outside was horrendous Bagheads fighting outside on Swanson Street and Seagulls crying all night meant had to close the window meaning the temp was unbearable Flys everywhere the next morning when we opened the window Shower poor low pressure and no shade in bathroom Breakfast ok Staff polite enough Only good point was they stored our luggage whilst we went shopping Premier Inn at the marina for us next time if we decide to come back im afraid to say!!!

"Above average"

User 03/08/2018

I have stayed at the hotel numerous times over the years with work and I can't fault the price or cleanliness of the rooms. Shower is efficient and plenty of towels. TV on the small side but adequate. Nice comfy beds. The only problem is how warm the room gets and that's with the windows open, I am roasting throughout the night and hence the drop in rating. The receptionist is polite, attentive and is a positive for the hotel. Car park is lacking before 6pm when the council opens up their carpark for use of hotel guests.

"Did the job"

User 30/07/2018

If you need a quick stop then this hotel is ideal. Value for money. Book through best western though as you get a better price rather than booking direct. A good place for hen party's or if you need a pit stop. Staff are friendly the rooms nice and clean. Breakfast ok NO GLUTEN FREE OPTIONS!! Was very noisy as a wedding was taking place.

"Not really so grand"

JessPem, Minneapolis, Minnesota 20/07/2018

I love the idea of staying in historic building but this needs some desperate updating. While the staff was nice enough the hotel lobby, elevator & main areas could use some updating. It did appear that they had done some updating in our rooms. There wasn't air conditioning. It said there was free parking but once we checked in we were told that the free parking is really the attached parking lot that belongs to a neighboring office building so you could park there for free only till 8 am. It made the decision to leave early very easy. It was located in a part of town that was kind of run down. I will say that the breakfast they offer is very nice

"Not so Grand"

User 17/07/2018

I stayed here for one evening, the staff were really pleasant and helpful, the hotel itself is very tired and is in some need of some serious TLC, the room decoration itself needs a lot of work, well it did in my room the net curtains were held up with wire and one window was screwed shut. The hotel was built in 1899, so the rooms are absolutely huge, the ceilings are really high, my room had a tiny television attached to it. There was an Indian restaurant in the hotel that you reach from goimg downstairs from the reception, parking is also a bit of an issue with a council car park which is free as long as you leave by 8am alternatively you can park outside in a space, that will cost you £3.00 per night, and you can be in there until 11:00am.

"A Grand old lady"

rafaman2018, Cramlington, United Kingdom 23/06/2018

The Grand Hotel in Hartlepool is like an aging opera singer - well past her prime but still giving a brave performance ! Located in a run-down area, the exterior has certainly seen better days and could do with some remedial work. Inside, the place is reminiscent of days gone by, wide corridors and a sweeping staircase with some interesting stained glass windows. The room I occupied was spacious, well decorated and spotlessly clean with a flat screen tv and a hospitality tray. The en-suite bathroom had all the usual facilities and complimentary toiletries. Room and en-suite were spotlessly clean. The beds are extremely comfortable and the heating is set at exactly the right temperature (for me). Be warned however, there is a taxi rank right outside the hotel and late night revellers can be heard from the street till the early hours. Presumably, rooms at the rear of the hotel will be quieter. The Sports Bar is a bit of a disappointment as it seems to attract mainly non-residents, some of whom looked a bit rough. I was at the Grand for a formal function and the meal which was provided was of the highest quality. Superb food, beautifully cooked and well served. Likewise, the breakfast is also very good, an excellent selection of cereals and pastries with a "Full English" cooked to order. The staff are polite and friendly. Whilst a long way from being a luxury hotel, The Grand is splendidly functional and offers excellent value for money. I would certainly stay there again.

The Grand has past its prime. The room was comfortable and clean. The shower left a lot to be desired. Only one bath towel in the room. The receptionist was very professional and friendly. He politely pointed out that had we rung reception he would have sorted the towels out. I would still use this hotel if I return to Hartlepool

"Happy enough with our stay"

steveclark43, Cheshire, United Kingdom 21/05/2018

Apart from a couple of issues regarding payment and the noise coming from the very loud disco which nobody warns you about, I found the Hotel to be clean and tidy with a superb - all you can eat - cooked breakfast on offer in the morning.

sarah h, hull 13/05/2018

I struggle to find any redeeming features with The Grand apart from the staff who were friendly & polite. We stayed on the 1st floor which had the most revolting stale odour as you opened the door from the stairway. The carpet was lifting up which is a trip hazard. Our room was directly above the sports bar so everytime some one went out for a smoke and stood on the steps the banging of the door vibrated upto the room plus the awful smell of cig smoke wafted straight up to our rooms only opening window. The general appearance of the hotel is rundown & shoddy. Our room was spacious but lacked furniture. It could do with an occasional table & 2 easy chairs. The TV was to small for such a large room.Only one window opened approx 12". No ventilation in the bathroom at all. The bath sides were held together by a large amount of silicon. One tiny shelf above the sink to put toiletries on ,more shelving needed for 2 guests toiletries.Aircon required due to lack of natural ventlation in room. Breakfast was ok. Nice fruit selection, good coffee, waitress was very good. The sports bar is horrendous. Sticky furniture, lack of ice & lemon for drinks. I can only imagine that the hotel stays afloat by the amount of trade it does in the bar by non residents. Due to the noise, door banging & cig smoke. Such a shame as it is a lovely old building with period features which could be enhanced more favourably. Look at The Bell in Driffield which is a Best Western hotel for inspitation as how to entice guests!

"Good value for money "

User 03/05/2018

Executive was spacious but sparse ( with tiny telly that could barely be seen from the bed). Room was on the main road so a little noisy over night. Staff friendly and welcoming. Little bit run down in public areas but generally OK for the money. Stayed one night with breakfast.

"Executive rooms are fabulous"

Lisa C, Norwich, United Kingdom 29/04/2018

I stayed here for one night in order to attend a conference. I stayed in an executive room which was huge! As a solo traveller it seemed absurd that I was staying in a room that could fit six people in. I would definitely recommend the space if you were staying for several nights. The room was spotless with all the usual facilities. The bathroom was spacious. The bed was large and very comfortable and I slept very well. The hotel itself is really pretty and was very clean. Check in was quick and really friendly. The bar was large and had a good range of drinks. My only complaint is that the bar closed around 11:30pm on the Friday and did so with no warning - it just sort of shut down around us. I am more used to hotel bars being open at all hours or at least being told the bar will close in order to get last orders in. Breakfast was good - a range of cold options with cooked to order hot breakfasts. Overall, a great night and great value for money so I would definitely stay again.

"Not the best by a long way"

User 16/04/2018

Visiting as part of a bowls team, group of us staying there. Showed up to rooms not prepared, first night no hot water, not enough towels in the room. One of our party left with what we think are bite marks after sleeping in the beds. Another part of our group had to spend an evening with none of the rooms plug sockets working. Overall an awful experience. The only reason this isn't a one star rating, is the staff were trying to go above and beyond, even though I feel as though they were understaffed for the size of the hotel. The receptionist called Lindsay was running around the hotel trying to deal with our issues alongside others, she even brought us a heater as our room was cold, but this still doesn't change how bad our stay was Also worth pointing out half of group couldn't get a parking bay, some even had to go to their cars at midnight to mess around buying daily parking tickets I will be complaining to best western, unacceptable, whoever runs this hotel should be ashamed

"Week of things going wrong"

markandgillcohen, Shoeburyness, United Kingdom 14/04/2018

Arrived at the hotel and went to my room it was like a sauna so hot you could not breath. So the hotel turned off the heating for the rest of the week no hot water and freezing cold room ( perhaps that will teach you for complaining) I had to go to bed in a jumper it was so cold, I did not get hot water for two days and when I did get it when I showered in the evening my towels where still wet in the morning as I had no heating to get them dry. The parking was a joke you had to move your car before 8 in the morning and could not park it until 6 at night. The only saving grace was the bed was very comfortable and the room was clean.

"Very average"

User 27/03/2018

The Hotel Foyer is quite nice and the check in and out process was quick, however, there was evidence of a previous leak coming through the roof in the room, the shower was grimy and the heating controls are either freezing cold or scald the skin of you hot, the anti slip mat for the shower was old looking and yellow so I decided to chance it without using the mat. I was looking forward to a coffee in the morning due to an early start but decided against it after I noticed the timescale build up in the sight glass so decided to not to bother. The bed was comfortable and clean and I had a decent nights sleep but the hotel itself is decidedly average at best. There were buckets on the stair landing collecting water from another leak which, I understand can happen, but at least a sign or something warning you of a potentially slippery floor? I was confused as to who worked at the hotel as there did not appear to be any distinguishable uniform being worn so it was kind of out of instinct who we spoke too. The Sports Bar in the hotel was ok. I never tried the restaurant in the hotel as it was Indian cuisine and I was not in the mood for that. KFC, Pizza Hut and Mcdonalds were just a 5 min walk away though. There is also a travel lodge and Premier Inn 5 minutes away too. Given the choice again, I would book into either of them. Disappointed.

"Excellent stay"

User 27/03/2018

Stayed here on 20th of march in an executive double room on second floor. Parked car in car park over the road and went to reception and booked car into car park for the night for three quid, bargain. Girls on reception very pleasant and given directions to room. Hall to room was a good size ( i set ironing board up in hall and ironed clothes in there ) and bedroom was very spacious. consists of double bed, desk and a couple of chairs but tv could have been bigger but not a problem it just looked lost in the size of the room. Really comfy bed so had good nights sleep and breakfast in the morning has a very good selection and cooked to order so fresh and to your liking but with good continental selection as well. overall an excellent stay, iron and board in bedroom, hairdryer as well, good selection of hot drinks in bedrooms and good breakfast. Will definitely stay here again when in hartlepool. We had to stay in hartlepool for another night unexpectedly but couldnt get in the grand so see my review of the Douglas which drove home how excellent the Grand is. Thanks to all at the hotel for a job well done

"Not Changed Since Last Time"

John M, Bo'ness, United Kingdom 20/03/2018

This was our second stay here, car parking is still not great, receptionist could not have cared less, certainly there was no warm welcome on offer, the hotel itself is actually OK for the money its all just a bit tired and the bar is a touch on the rowdy side full of locals. My wife and i had 1 drink and left to find something to eat. we were not offered the breakfast so we never bothered with it. Dont get me wrong its not a bad place its actually okay its just needing managed, but its cheap enough and we will probably stay here again in 6 months time and give the same review.

"Fab stay!"

Bethany V, Birmingham, England, United Kingdom 14/02/2018

Stayed here with my partner for 3 night beginning of feb. Room was absolutely perfect for the price! Very spacious and comfortable. Hotel is kept very clean and tidy. Staff at reception were great couldn't help you enough and were very friendly and welcoming. The indian restaurant connected to the hotel mumbai is a must try, absolutely delicious. Really enjoyed my stay and sure will be returning again soon!!

"Not bad at all, just needs modernising "

User 12/02/2018

Stayed the weekend and it's clean and has free parking next door. It just needs some simple cosmetics and a few extra things (like robes) to make it amazing. Our room was huge but really didn't feel like an executive room and trying to view a 26 inch tv from 8 foot away wasn't the greatest. Just a little bit more effort and design thought would truly make this a great place as the building itself is beautiful. I'd stay again but just be prepared, your expectations may not quite be met. Staff were great though, very fast check in and out and very friendly service!

hannah g, Hastings, United Kingdom 22/01/2018

Stayed at this lovely hotel for a couple of days and it was amazing. Clean and friendly atmosphere staff very polite. Right opposite the shopping centre and in walking distance of restaurants and bars

"All you can hear is LOUD music!!!!"

User 14/01/2018

My boyfriend booked us a room here as we where visiting a friends new restaurant. Room is nice came with a spa type of bath. After us both working long hours today we couldnt wait to climb into bed....untill its sounded like we are actually sat in a nightclub the bass is disgustingly lound and even with the TV on loud it still isnt drowning the sound out. We have rang reception and asked what time it will stop to be told 12am ...i am sorry but who in the right minds runs a hotel knowing that people use these facilities for business, work and relaxation purposes would place a bar open to the public in a HOTEL! Im actually lying in the bed now writing this review becauase lets face it im not getting any sleep. I will not return please avoid it is not worth £85.

"Great value last minute!"

StuK72, Carlisle, United Kingdom 12/01/2018

In Hartlepool for a weeks training course. Needed to find a room last minute as friends I was going to stay with had the flu. Great value for a single room with breakfast included- less than £200 for 5 nights! It is an old hotel, the single room I had was larger than some double rooms I've stayed in before, the doors were old with latches, but for a 3 star and the value I'm not complaining. A comfortable quiet sleep. Good size en suite bathroom. The cooked breakfast was delicious. Not a huge variety of continental, but again it's a 3 Star. Parking free (6pm-8am) next door in the council car park they share, so no probs there. Staff very welcoming and friendly. Great choice!

"No recommended as an Events Venue"

Just4gfgem, Braintree, United Kingdom 10/01/2018

I would not recommend this hotel as an events venue. This venue was carefully selected for a public meeting that I was attending, and arrangements were made around this booking. I was very disappointed to be told by the organiser that the booking had been cancelled with no reasonable explanation given. This has caused inconvenience and I would not use this venue myself or attend a function there in the future. Please be aware if you do use this venue, they may decide to cancel your event.

"Value and quality"

Z6695HYjohnr, Exeter, United Kingdom 20/12/2017

Staff are friendly, well informed and genuinely interested in giving first class service. The Hotel has obviously been tastefully refurbished since we last stayed here, the rooms are well equipped comfortable beds and good value for money. The Grand is one of Hartlepool's best and we will be back when next in this area.

"Events Venue"

lhallstockton, Stockton-on-Tees, United Kingdom 17/12/2017

We used the Grand in Hartlepool for an event in November. It was amazing value for money and the team there could be any more accommodating. All of our requests for a successful day were seen to and more, we've rebooked for next year!

"Good food but shabby downstairs"

R N, Hartlepool, United Kingdom 16/12/2017

Attended a Christmas lunch here with a group of 40. Very good food indeed, i thought, for this is a bit of a dive frankly.. Generous portions were noted. The main bar is hideous - the complete width of the hotel and i can only imagine a Saturday evening of cheapish drinks....the bar in the Ballroom was more intimate BUT neither bar served any real ale. I asked but 'no chance here ' was the reply with a wry smile. Probably the least attractive Best hotel i have been to

"Good Location"

Kerry P, Southampton, United Kingdom 11/12/2017

Although a very old building it had character and for a short stay it has an ideal location in the town. Comfy bed and a good English breakfast. Staff friendly, Parking nearby but not on site. The bedrooms are at least 13 feet high and a good size with excellent in room facilities for Tea and Coffee Wi Fi Etc

stepheni288, York, United Kingdom 04/12/2017

Can't complain at all. If I was being harsh the room was looking a little tired. But it was huge, as was the bathroom, comfortable and clean. TV looked very small as it was so far away but we weren't there to watch TV so not a problem. All the staff were great. Best hotel ever, no of course not. But so much better than you would expect in its price bracket. Wouldn't hesitate to book it again.

"Average "

User 26/11/2017

Nice big room, and we were given an upgrade to a family room...clean enough bed but here's nothing grand about it... water stains on the ceiling that hadn't been repaired and hairs in the sink and shower.... saving grace was a really good full English. Constant smell of curry throughout and in the rooms.

"Car park nightmare"

Paul W, Ipswich, United Kingdom 15/11/2017

Paying for parking in an unsafe environment my sons car was damaged by vandalism the decor is at best shabby and dark it smacks of gothic interior and as I remember the Grand from my wedding reception it is no longer Grand such a shame even the Indian restaurant attached smells terrible throughout the hotel

"Three night stay in a single room"

penseivat, London, United Kingdom 15/11/2017

Attending the Remembrance Day Parade on 12th November and then staying on to see friends and relatives, I know that Best Western hotels have a good standard and so I booked here for my 3 night stay. It's central to most things, a few minutes drive or a 10 minute walk to the Marina, a large shopping centre opposite and, if you don't fancy driving or walking, there are bus stops right outside. Being on my own, I was concerned about booking a single room as they are usually no more than closets, right next to the lift shaft or overlooking the dustbins which are emptied at silly o'clock, but I needn't have worried. Perhaps it's because the hotel is a Victorian building rather than a modern box, while obviously a single room, it was large enough for me, in the centre of a row and far enough away from the lift that it didn't bother me. The room had all that I needed - a very comfortable bed, an easy chair, rather than a dining chair which a lot of rooms have, and an en-suite with a shower cubicle for a normal sized person rather than a stick insect! Toiletries, coffee, tea and biscuits replenished daily, as were the towels. There was a dressing/writing table and a proper wardrobe rather than a covered rail. The breakfast was what was expoected of a Best Western, with cereal, porridge, fresh (as opposed to tinned) fruit,, croissants and pastries, cold meats and a cooked breakfast if you wanted one. The staff were friendly, knowledgeable about the town and it's history and, if the manager of the hotel is reading this, then Karen, who served me breakfast every day deserves more pay than she is getting. Her cheery smile and very pleasant disposition made even the coldest blustery day, and there were a few of them, seem brighter. I couldn't afford to stay here when I lived in the town but would definitely stay here again when I come back.

"The best hotel in Hartlepool "

grantLDK, Milton Keynes, United Kingdom 13/11/2017

"Grand "

KilaHaines, Rossendale, United Kingdom 06/11/2017

Stayed for two nights last weekend. Had read reviews and was a tad nervous about the noise and the lift and things other reviewers had stated. Anyway was on the 2nd floor facing the cenotaph. Some noise from revellers but not too much. Earplugs sorted that out. As for the lift it doesn't make a sound when you are in it so ignore that. Staff were fabulous really friendly and helpful. There is a pub downstairs which got very busy. We went to the Indian in the basement and that was good. The surrounding area is run down which is a shame. Breakfast was lovely and freshly cooked. Rooms were very spacious and clean. It was worth the money we paid.

"Grand Weekend"

tigertiger2, North East 05/11/2017

Stayed Fri and Sat night recently for a friends wedding overall cannot fault the facilities, rooms, food, prices but most of all the staff. they are dedicated hard working and very very pleasant. A special mention must go to 2 people the wedding planner who had everything sorted and under control she had a lovely smile for everyone, nothing was too much trouble for her, also the lady who was in charge of the wedding food, who I believe stepped up as the head chef was not available, the food was all first class, hot, tasty and plentiful. We had a great weekend a big part played by the Grand Hotel Thank You...

"Shower went cold halfway through"

User 04/11/2017

Good: location is quite central in Hartlepool, room biscuits were nice, and room and bed were quite big, check in was good/nice staff. Bad: Shower went cold halfway through shower, TV in room small with really poor sound quality, dodgy electrical socket next to bed (moves in and out of wall), had to put standalone air conditioning unit on as room was too warm (noisy). Overall, for the price, it did the job and if breakfast had been included it probably would have got 4 stars from me but you do get what you pay for.

"Decent hotel "

ikelly46, North West UK 01/11/2017

Staying in a single room at the back of the hotel I didn't have high expectations but I was very pleased to be able to say that this was no broom cupboard bedroom... it was lovely, spacious enough for 1 (ibis budget doubles are smaller than this) at a decent and fair price. It's close to amenities and my rear position meant no noise interference as another group member complained about from a nearby different hotel Staff were good and brekkie lovely at £8 Warm, clean, quiet and clean Thanks Grand Hotel

"Grand Hotel"

User 25/10/2017

An overnight stay at this hotel was very pleasant. Check in was smooth and it's good to see the parking ticket malarkey has been resolved with an electronic system, which avoids having to dash over the road to put a paper ticket on the dash! The room was well appointed, warm and spacious. The bath was brilliant and the hot water was plentiful. The shower was not powerful but did the job. The bed was very comfortable. Breakfast was served in a beautiful room, and despite us being close to the end of service was excellent. The staff were polite and efficient, nothing was too much trouble. Full English was hot and plentiful! The only downside of this hotel is the sports bar, which can be noisy and not in keeping with the ‘Grand' nature of the rest of the hotel. But I guess it's what keeps the income up.

"Diamond package Wedding October 2017!!"

dmb359, Hartlepool, United Kingdom 20/10/2017

Wish to Thank Kathleen & Lynne and their team for the smooth running of our special day!! Overjoyed when Kathleen took over as Wedding & Events manager as felt up until that point I'd been forgotten, Kathleen was always respectful, polite and I was updated regularly with calls & email returned very promptly. I stayed in hotel night before wedding, room was very grand, comfortable & clean (although very warm) I felt very special, and relaxed I was extremely looked after that evening by Lynne. The wedding day itself was amazing, couldn't fault it they all worked so hard to turn rooms around with tight deadlines it was flawless & looked breathtakingly beautiful (Thank-you Special events north east) All staff Kathleen, Lynne, reception staff, Chefs, Housekeeping, waiters & bar staff worked so hard. The canapés, wedding breakfast & evening buffet was amazing (Thanks to head chef & team) Amazing value for money, so pleased we chose Best Western Grand Hotel Hartlepool to have our wedding. Would highly recommend without a doubt.

"Basic Standards Missing"

User 08/10/2017

We stayed here in October 2017. Initially, we thought the room looked OK for the price. However, once properly in the room the carpet was dirty, the ceiling had cobwebs, the toilet blocked and had an awful smell from entering the room. When in the shower the sink would then fill up and the bath wouldn't drain properly. When we left the room to go out the door handle came off and when we got into bed the bedding was ripped. Even at £60 a night you expect something a bit better. I gave this two stars as the staff were friendly and the hotel location was pretty central.

"Updated old hotel"

Simking1874, Birmingham, United Kingdom 03/10/2017

Stayed here once before and was happy so booked again when in area. It is a very very old building as you would expect, but it's rooms have been modernised to a point quite well. Could really do with better showers though. It is old building so maybe difficult to work with but the water pressure is none existent as it was last year when I stayed before. Didn't use facilities in evening for food. Curry house downstairs smells right through ground floor but not at all in the rooms. Breakfast is ok too. Not groundbreaking but does the job.

"Just awful."

LizG85, Yorkshire 03/10/2017

I am not even going to bother wasting my time listing the faults with this (I actually made a list on my phone but it will take too long to explain it all). From first arrival to leaving there was just problem after problem. I thought Best Western were a reputable chain, I didn't realise it is a franchise, that explains a lot.

"Grand in its not day..and pretty good now"

Linconshire couple, Boston, England 03/10/2017

Lovely old hotel, friendly reception and staff throughout. The room was very spacious compared to modern hotels, and also very comfortable. All you would expect from a hotel in this price range, being picky TV was small for such a large room. Breakfast was superb, cereals, fruits, hams, cooked buffet. Would return if visiting the area again.

"Sunday Lunch Carvery "

Gary J, Hartlepool, United Kingdom 03/10/2017

We visited the Grand Hotel carvery on a whim. We were looking to eat somewhere at short notice and just popped in. We were happy we did. The service, food and prices were excellent. There are a selection of starters and desserts on offer as well as the carvery lunch. The standard of service was excellent, from the ladies looking after the tables to the chef at the carvery counter. All made the time for us and made us feel welcome. There was a good atmosphere and there were obviously regulars in as the rapport was good. Our food was hot, fresh and we thought great value for money. We will definitely be going back.

Joklarke, Hartlepool 02/10/2017

Went for a party in the venue. The place was set out really well and all of the staff were friendly. Had a lovely time and the bride and groom were happy. Really helpful and a lovely atmosphere. Would definitely think about choosing the grand hotel for a party in the future.

"On Song!!"

Scunthorpe Male Voice Choir visited Hartlepool to sing in a concert with Hartlepool Male Voice Choir on 2nd September 2017. 44 of us stayed at this hotel for two nights and can honestly say that the service, the well appointed rooms, the friendly staff, cleanliness, the fabulous breakfast - then a delicious and well presented evening meal on Sunday in the elegant ballroom with its beautiful chandeliers, pristine white linen table cloths and napkins and private bar rounded off our stay. Thank you Emma and all the staff for your smiling friendly service. We couldn't wish for better. We hope to visit again - in the meantime 44 people will be recommending this hotel!! Many thanks again. Graham - for and on behalf of all 44!!

"poor nights sleep"

guestSussex, sussex 10/09/2017

Spent 1 night here, although upgrade to a suite, was woken at 2:30am with water pouring through ceiling, when I eventual found night porter he was next to useless, didn't go to the room above where the water was coming from "as he didnt want to wake them up" the fact that I was wide awake by this time was lost on him, as the water was stopping he provided a couple of towels, then left to get back to sleep with the gentle plop of water on to wet towels, complained in the morning and told to email manager and they knocked £10 of the bar bill, didn't help me when I then had a full day of work but having had a disturbed night. Indian Restaurant downstairs is quite good, hotel bar full of locals and a bit rowdy with lots of sports on all the TV's

"Nice staff but various issues"

ScouseSlads, Liverpool, United Kingdom 06/09/2017

6 of us visited here on Saturday night and I'm a little torn between a 2 or 3 star rating Car parking is at the left of the hotel but can only be used on a weekend. It's a tight car park and can be difficult to park We went to check in at 4 to be told our room wasn't ready. We were offered a drink in the sports bar which is by itself an experience. Managed to get in the room at about half four. The lift is very old and creaky and takes its times. Our room was really nice but they can be very difficult to get in with the key and even more difficult to lock. Bed was really nice and spacious. Bathroom was very outdated and the shower room door fell off. We tried to open the window to find that it was pinned into the wall but somebody had tried to yank it off so half the wall was peeling off. During the night the second floor had a lot of issues with noise which kept them up for most of the night. Third floor was fine. Breakfast was shambolic at best. The poor woman was on by herself. No plates. Long queue. Running out of food and no seats. I guess that this might be because it was the morning after a wedding but it needs better staffing. That is the reason for a 2 rather than a 3

"Great Traditional Hotel"

Neil H, Herstmonceux, United Kingdom 27/08/2017

The Grand is situated in the centre of Hartlepool & has the excellent Mumbai Indian Restaurant in the basement. It also has a great Sports Bar but sadly no Real Ale. The room was a bit stuffy but was a good size with hot en-suite shower. The Full English Breakfast was excellent and the staff always attentive. A good value traditional hotel.

"Friendly staff, Needs updated"

User 20/08/2017

Stayed a few nights and had a nice stay. The hotel is very dated and could use a face lift. The bathrooms were the biggest disappointment. The water barely was warm and the toilet needed a few flushes to get anything to go down. The staff were nothing but pleasant which was much appreciated! We did not add on breakfast as it did cost and extra 8.99 gbp per person which we thought was a little over priced. Parking is free and is right across the street which was great.

"Way too hot"

andy41961, Sheffield, United Kingdom 09/08/2017

I arrived at the hotel at about 9pm at night and was staying in a single room. On entering the room it felt very warm and after half an hour the temperature on my alarm clock showed it to be 25.1C. It was not hot outside only about 15C, but the window would only open an inch so little air could get in to cool the room. The heating in the room was not on but I noticed the radiators in the corridors were on despite it being July, surely a waste of money and resources. I complained at reception and was offered the choice of other rooms and found one slightly which recorded 23.5C. This was still too hot and I had very poor sleep both nights I stayed because of this. Otherwise the hotel would have been OK as the rooms were very good and clean and whilst there did not seem to be much parking I actually had no problems getting parked. The hotel is also nicely situated for a 50 yard walk to a shopping centre for breakfast and coffee. Wifi in the room was poor.

"2 nights "

robbief800, Greenock, United Kingdom 06/08/2017

Stayed at this hotel for 2 nights, nice hotel great location and friendly staff however we had 3 rooms booked. 2 of which seemed to be dirty with dust and dirt in bathroom. One we noticed had bugs! The other which had chunks of dust were we saw spiders crawling about, this was very off putting and did make it that slight it disappointing however overall we did enjoy but that was the most off putting part

"Needs sound proofing but otherwise pleasant hotel"

millypink, yorkshire 03/08/2017

Stayed for one night, I must say when I drove up my heart sank looking at the surrounding area but on closer inspection it wasn't as bad as first thought. Free parking next door on a weekend in what I believe are council offices? The hotel still retains remnants of its grand Edwardian past & has some beautiful rooms such as the stunning room used for weddings (there was one on & we had a look in) I had a single room which was big enough, no view but that was fine, happy with large bathroom with a bath. My electric kept tripping out but the maintenance staff were quick to respond & put this right. After a fabulous visit to the marina & Navy museum which is brilliant & I would defiantly recommend a visit, we had a few drinks in the bar which I thought quite expensive for a sports type bar. We ate in the Indian resteraunt below stairs which was very nice, good food & nice surroundings. My room was number 201 & I would never recommend anyone staying in there when a function is on, the noise was so loud I may aswell have been at the party, could hear every word the dee jay said & the walls were bouncing with the sound, no chance of sleep what so ever!! it did spoil what had been a very good night. We booked a large table at breakfast as there were ten of us & I must say I thought the breakfast was excellent, nicely cooked & vegetarian sausages which gives it a big thumbs up from me! lovely fruit salad with berries, all served with a smile 10/10 there. Overall the hotel is a good basic hotel but I would not stay again due to the party noise, it may be better in another room, but it is for this reason only, that I would not recommend staying here.

"Pleasant, possibly haunted."

runningaroundLondon, London 23/07/2017

A nice change from bland chains with 'business facilities' (a 56k modem socket) and 'quirky' branding that says 'screw you' between the bubbly letters. Not perfect but pretty good. Friendly staff, some of them possibly from the afterlife (in a good way!) Whilst in the bathroom my suitcase fell over of it's own accord. Then some seagulls seemed determined to fly through the closed window (the window was closed because it wouldn't stay open. Luckily). The spirit world were possibly displeased with my great value reservation so I left an offering of some Kinder Shoko Bons and went out for a bit to the excellent Hops & Wine near by. Breakfast was fine enough, pretty good coffee all things considered. Optimistically, five tables had been set. All in all a good hotel - it's a worthwhile opportunity to stay in a (presumably) once prestigious Victorian hotel. A few little Best Western corporate touches are rather welcome and things are clean and tidy. Hartlepool is a lovely town, particularly the Headland. It's a great place to cycle around.

"Clean but....."

User 19/07/2017

When you arrive at this hotel there's no visible parking. You park in a loading bay and run in to be told that there are 13 spaces in the park opposite. All full. You try to use the pay and display but it only takes old pound coins. You then find your ticket runs out at 23.59! That's ok as the private park beside the hotel can be used from 6pm....but you have to move the car before 8am. Grrr. The dodgy lift rattles up to your room. Can't open the bedroom door. After a struggle finally, with a pull and a tug, it's open. The room is large and thankfully clean, but very austere, stuffy and gloomy. The tv is the size of a matchbox and keeps cutting out. The only way to open the window is to climb onto the ledge and prop it open with a coat hanger. The bathroom window frame is broken. The saving grace is that there is plenty of hot water. The staff are pleasant enough but lack proper training and inter personal skills. Glad it was only one night!

Dear Sarah A, Thank you for taking the time to leave us a review, we rely upon the feedback from our guests to help us improve upon the service we provide in the future. "Wedding day and night"

nicolabrady1978, County Durham, United Kingdom 12/07/2017

Well were to begin...Kelly the wedding planner was first class from start to finish - making sure we knew exactly what was required and when...and above all - her calming/laid back attitude helped to make the experience a lot less stressful that we anticipated. The ceremony room was set up exactly how we wanted...and was completely breathtaking to walk down the aisle in the grand ball room. The reception was held in the grand ball room and looked absolutely amazing. Everything went without a glitch. Food was delicious, staff were efficient and extremely helpful. Bridal suite was huge with tall ceiling and a jacuzzi bath alongside shower - the only downside was it looked dated. Overall the wedding package was fantastic, Kelly and her team were outstanding... we would highly recommend this to others.

Great hotel ideal location nice helpful friendly staff. Very good location for anyone with business in the collage. I could not comment on the shopping as I did not look around the shops. There was a nice place to eat nearby it was a witherspoons restaurant/pub.

Son and daughter in law held wedding reception here. Food superb. Venue looked fabulous. Staff v helpful. Can't fault it. Stayed overnight in a lovely room. Excellent breakfast. Thank you to the grand.

"Excellent venue and service!"

User 06/06/2017

We recently held our rugby club's annual dinner & awards evening at the Grand Hotel. The service from Kelly and her staff is always excellent, very professional and their attention detail is first class. The two course dinner we enjoyed was delightful. It was a great night enjoyed by all and those in attendance could not praise the venue highly enough. Would recommend the Grand Hotel to anyone looking to host an event somewhere and you will be hard pushed to find a better ballroom. We'll certainly be returning next year. Thanks again for a great night!

"Not a Best Western"

thomc610, Joplin, Missouri 30/05/2017

Older property, worn to the point of needing a major overhaul. Leather couch in room 316 flaking badly, carpets mangy and dirty, floor creaking badly, TV to small for the room. As Diamond Member with BW, this hotel would not be recommended.

"Four night midweek stay for family party"

steve_rally, Wakefield, United Kingdom 23/05/2017

Great looking hotel from the exterior, a bit dated inside but better than the newer plastic boxes you can get. A very comfortable stay and great value for the money. Central location to town. Getting a parking spot a bit of lottery, only 12 spaces. We arrived back at 10.30pm one night, no spaces and nearby pay and display carpark machine would not print ticket past midnight. Eventually parked in council office carpark but had to move car before 8.00am. No on street parking nearby. Breakfast great and served by two lovely friendly staff, Helen and Karen. Visited Mumbai restaurant twice, excellent. No general restaurant for evening meal in hotel, sports bar did only snacks and not to our taste for a quiet drink and meal. Hotel should put list of local eateries with phone numbers and walking time in there room info pack. Great stay for price paid will certainly look for offers if we need to stay on future visits

"just for the night"

644barriea, Carlisle, United Kingdom 18/05/2017

the hotel is close to the museum and marina also there is a long beach just 10 mins walk shopping centre is next door to the hotel the hotel has a sports bar but just up from it is the main area for pubs and clubs

"Middle of town"

KianGaf, Dublin, Ireland 17/05/2017

The great thing about the grand is that is right in the middle of town not far from the train station. The rooms are clean and comfortable and good value for money. The door could more secure. The breakfast should available later imo 10am is too early on a weekend. I stayed here before a few years back and preferred the bar the way it was then I wouldn't like the sparse sports bar theme that they have run with.

User 17/05/2017

Lovely clean hotel beds are huge and really comfortable didn't want to get up but pleased I did as breakfast was superb.staff were nice and friendly couldn't do enough to help us also he'd great entertainment in the hotel bar would definitely go again

Jewels1958, Widnes 14/05/2017

Staff were really pleasant. Breakfast superb. Indian restaurant in the hotel was nice and clean and food good. Felt 'safe' which is important when travelling alone Hotel room very large but a tiny TV? Parking was across the road and I couldn't get a free space which was annoying but overall a pleasant stay.

"One night stay"

brighteyes123, Sheffield 06/05/2017

I stayed here along with three family members for one night only. Firstly, the parking consists of around 12 spaces however from 6pm on Friday you can park next door for free all weekend so this was good. We were greeted by a lovely polite girl on reception and given our rooms, which are decent sized and very comfortable. The rooms are clean and with all the usual Best Western decor. The hotel is a little dated, but in my opinion that shows its history and isn't such a bad thing. The rooms are modern enough. If in Hartlepool again i would return

"A beautiful grand hotel with plenty of character."

BURNSKEANE, Holmfirth, United Kingdom 25/04/2017

Stayed here on Friday 21st and Saturday 22nd April 2017. It's a beautiful grand hotel that's a little past it's hey-day with numerous signs of age etc but, in my opinion it adds to the character of the place. It's conveniently located such that it was a short walk to everywhere we visited whilst in Hartlepool. The room (316) wasn't entirely without fault (the leather sofa is definitely overdue being replaced) but overall it was of a high quality, it was a very comfortable stay and the service from staff was superb. I'd definitely recommend this place to others and I'd definitely stay here again if/when I'm in the area.

"Comfortable and good value"

CumbriaRiverBoat, Cumbria 25/04/2017

Impressive building in good location though somewhat in need of a refurb. Room was large and comfortable, plumbing a bit dodgy. Staff very friendly, good breakfast, freshly cooked not in heated trays. Good value for price paid. We had no problems at all with noise, were on third floor at front.

"Ruby Wedding Anniversary Celebration"

wellsie13, Farnborough, United Kingdom 17/04/2017

We were celebrating 40 years of marriage at The Grand, and it lived up to its name in every way. We had 50 guests, and the feedback from all without exception was positive. The sit-down meal for our evening celebration was excellent, served in the majestic ballroom, chandeliers and all. The building itself is a marvellous example of Victorian architecture, which added to the grandness of the occasion. The staff were exemplary, helpful, polite and attentive; the food, both the evening meal and breakfast the morning after, was delicious and perfectly cooked; the ambiance was top class. We stayed overnight in the honeymoon suite (bit old for that, but never mind), a huge space with every convenience including a bathroom with shower and spa bath. Temperature comfortable, and a morning reveille of seagulls which some might complain about, but I personally find quite fun - after all, it's by the sea, so one must expect this. Though if you actually want a sea view you'll have to ask for a top floor room. All in all a great place to stay; our top recommendation if you're heading Hartlepool way.

room was lovely very clean tidy very spacious, only down fall is the heating was on constantly which made ot un bareable so I put the fan on which was provided in the room and the noise of the fan kept waking me during the night, but that was probably partly my fault as never rang down to reception, but the other thing is I would of expected reception to ask how the stay was when handing the key back which they didnt so I didnt feel I had opportunity to say there was a problem

"Nice single room"

WBAH, Tutbury, United Kingdom 11/04/2017

Nice hotel with plenty of character. Lots of noisy wildlife outside but that's what you get by the sea (Gulls!!) very large room for a single with all the usual bells and whistles. My only real Cristian was the slow WIFI. Breakfast was nice and the staff very friendly. There was a pub attached but I didn't bother going and went to the Indian restraint in the basement instead (also very good)

"comfortable hotel in the middle of town"

User 11/04/2017

its an older hotel but comfortable rooms, It is warm, should not complain. Open the window and the whole of town is in there with you. Friday and Saturday, The police and Ambulance sirens go throughout the night with the pubs and partygoers giving it some............... I tried three rooms in my stays there. All good. the wifi is really hit and miss. Breakfast is fresh. smaller selection but................... fresh just the noise of the city ..............................

"Excellent value"

danorr, Durham, United Kingdom 09/04/2017

Stayed for one night (a Saturday). Overall excellent value, room was quite large and comfortable. Bathroom was a bit tired and in need of a little tlc. Room had iron and ironing board, kettle ,tv and hairdryer. There was a good supply of tea and coffee etc. Hotel is in an excellent location, with a shopping center just over the road and bars and eateries nearby. we had free use of the car park attached to the hotel . There is a bar downstairs and it is very friendly and reasonable prices. would recommend and would stay again when in area.

staff where very friendly and helpful had a lovely room though a bit dated the bed was comfortable and the room was spacious we would definitely stay here again, shops near by and plenty of places to drink eat and drink the harbour is not to far away and is lovely, their is parking across the road from hotel but don't forget to get permit from hotel

"Extremely disappointed"

KingN1M, Leeds, United Kingdom 20/11/2016

Myself and my family have staying at this hotel for the last 15 years and in recent years watching the decline. Not sure if this is due to Best Western chain? Have just returned from my annual 2 day stay and am still trying to warm up. No heating or hot water on Friday or Saturday, hotel fully aware of the problem but didn't offer guests heaters unless they asked for them. Additional quilt was needed. There was not one area within the hotel that was comfort able enough to sit and relax to have a drink despite no heating there is no lounge lobby area. A cold rough and ready sports bar. The function we attended last night was a private charity function and the room was feeezing, my mum and aunt in their late 70's had to sit with their coats on all night - disgusting. Other unrelated guests also suffering the same. Room 101 is a suit, last year there was problems with plumbing in the sink, thus was reported, but tge same issue still exists this year. Clearly on going maintenance issues . There was no apology from the staff, no acknowledgement from the hotel that our stay may not have been a comfortable one. Shame on you Best Western at least 10 guests that wont be returning. The only plus I can say was the chef excelled himself in providing a fantastic meal at the ball......

"Mixed as always. "

andypusey, Bristol, United Kingdom 15/11/2016

I have stayed at the grand hotel several times over recent years. It's always a mixed bag. The rooms are a good size and some of them have been updated quite nicely. On this particular visit I had as always booked a room with a bath but on arrival after a seven hour drive found I had a room with a shower. This was resolved quickly enough but nonetheless it was careless. The room itself is large but only has a wardrobe and a mirror in it as furniture so no drawers of any description. Also The bathroom was very very small the door opening bang against the bath as you went in. Just about acceptable but no more. Breakfast was above average though the service to take my order was slow. The key to staying in this hotel in my view is the price. At £75 per night I consider this to be good value and without the irritations I mentioned above I would have given it four stars for value. I have stayed here at busier times and paid £100 but this is poor value

"Don't stay here if you need to get to sleep on Friday or Saturday night"

User 12/11/2016

While the hotel is well situated, with good attentive staff and pleasant decor, the noise emanating from the nightclub on the ground floor is beyond a joke. In a room on the top floor, the music might have well as been in the room next door.

"Nice hotel "

jocardwell, Sheffield, United Kingdom 23/10/2016

Just got back from an overnight stay for a friend's wedding ?? had a great time hotel was brilliant staff nice an friendly massive rooms we did book executive got a good deal on booking com could do with a spruce up on a few thing like the outside not very well presented specially all the seagulls mess on the building and on your car but all in all ten out of ten see you again

"Lovely spacious room "

Dale P, Harrogate, England, United Kingdom 23/10/2016

The young lady on reception was lovely and polite and greeted us in a friendly manner. Our room was 222 which was very spacious with a king and a double bed to choose from. Bathroom could definitely do with some updating. The shower was only Luke warm.I found a deliberate mistake in the middle of the night when I went for a cup of cold water Industry standard says cold to the right. This is for Anyone that is visually impaired. Not a big thing just really annoying when it's dark and it tasted horrid Tea / coffee and biscuits in the room Overall a value for money stay and enjoyed the marina especially Portals for food

"Good for the weekend."

andyll16, London, United Kingdom 16/10/2016

We stayed here as were in town for a family members birthday. Nice old style hotel with very approachable staff that made us feel welcome. Had 2 rooms next door to each other as requested and they were clean and had everything we needed. Could probably do with a bit of an upgrade all round but it was still nice and did the job.

"Lovely Hotel Bags of Character"

Neilog1, Durham, United Kingdom 15/10/2016

This hotel is absolutely lovely some will say it's dated but in my opinion it adds to the character of the building and hotel, staff were friendly and very polite, in fact couldn't fault it would definitely go back loved it.

"Average Stay"

kurquhart85, Edinburgh, United Kingdom 12/10/2016

We booked into the Grand for a family reunion - lots of us travelling and most of us staying at the hotel. We had our 18 month old son, so paid for an upgrade to give us a bit of extra room. The upgrade was definitely worth it - large and after seeing some other rooms I think we had a recently refurbished one, couldn't fault it. Clean, and with the travel cot waiting for us. Despite being on the main street and a wedding on we had no trouble with noise, although the room was quite warm. Lift was broken when we checked in, so just for peace of mind we used the stairs the rest of the weekend. Nothing the hotel could do, just us being wary of using a broken lift. Issue with the boiler in part of the hotel on the Saturday - something we weren't aware of until I called reception about lunchtime to ask if there was an issue. Receptionist was great - very apologetic, and offered me a key to another vacant room to shower and bathe my son. Due to the reunion we ate out for our stay, apart from breakfast which was good. Great waiting staff. Check out was quick, and although the receptionist hadn't been aware about the broken boiler on Saturday, she offered as a reduction on the room rate for the inconvenience. Although an okay stay, wouldn't stay again, purely based on an email received that was meant for internal use, but was actually sent to a family member. It was rude, and slating customers. Not a place I would want to stay again.

Room was nice but had a number of things that need updating/fixing to make it better. Cracks in walls and tiles etc.... Wi-FI was good.

"Hotel with a bit of character"

Pete H, Birmingham, United Kingdom 18/09/2016

Stayed here many times over the years. Seen a couple of refurbishments and changes of management. Staff always seem very friendly, and the facilities are generally up to scratch. The grand old building can appear a little 'shabby round the edges' in places, but still provides more interesting surroundings than a more modern, generic, chain hotel. The only real negative point about the place, for me, is the lack of a good air-conditioning / ventilation system. In hot weather, this can leave you with the choice of keeping windows closed and over-heating at night, or opening them to enjoy the sounds of Hartlepool's famously exuberant night-life.

"Nice to stay in a personalised hotel"

hazel-paul, Kendal, United Kingdom 11/09/2016

We stayed on a Saturday night as we'd come to a family Christening nearby. First impressions were not great as there was a very noisy wedding party taking place on the ground floor. However we couldn't hear it at all in our room on the 2nd floor. It was spacious & clean with everything we needed. Our main problem was that it was very warm (no heating on but the hot water pipes heat everywhere). We had to open the windows & we think Hartlepool is a city that never sleeps so we heard cars /shouting /singing & seagulls until the early hours! On the plus side, all the staff we met were very friendly & professional, the hotel décor is different to the standardised plastic of the modern chain hotels & it was very good value for money (a deal on Expedia). Breakfast choice was excellent & served by 2 lovely ladies -our only gripe was that most of the cooked breakfast tasted like it had been cooked for hours (only the eggs were freshly cooked). All in all would definitely stay here again when in Hartlepool.

One night stay (Saturday) prior to the Great North Run Pleasant receptionist at check-in - confirmed online booking and took payment. Recommended a local Italian restaurant (thanks). Comfy rooms and spacious bathroom with huge towels. Room was on third floor so did not experience any noise from a wedding reception taking place. Needed a high carb breakfast - Anne sorted out porridge & banana - thank you. Definitely stay again next time in area

Nice clean room. Lovely bed. A bit noisy from the street during the night until 3am approx. Great location: you can walk out of the hotel and you're in the centre of Hartlepool which was ideal for us. In the hotel corridor you'll find old photos showing their staff and the town. Very nice touch! Would stay there again.

The wedding food and service was great, my gripe is after being there all day and night the bouncers come in really heavy handed telling you to leave, this also happened at a wedding we attended in January 20016, I can understand that there must have been some rowdy troublesome events, but the two I have attended were very happy occasions only to be spoilt by doormen

"Average Hotel"

Ciaran D, Bedford, United Kingdom 04/08/2016

Convenient central location in the middle of Hartlepool. Hotel is Victorian style and dated and could do with refurbishment. The seagulls make a racket all night long and can be clearly heard even when the windows are closed. Staff are friendly and helpful. Rooms are reasonably spacious but dimly lit. Breakfast choice is lacking but cooked breakfast was of good quality. Fine for business but not particularly nice for a romantic or leisurely weekend away. Not cheap, but on a par with others in the area.

Very poor value for £85 a night without breakfast. The lights in the room were so dim that it was impossible to read after dark. In spite of leaving the tap running for 15 minutes there was no hot water available, only just tepid. Very run down and unattractive place,

"Experience the heat of a Steel Furnace, in your room! But no points for Loyalty I'm Afraid."

mhancorn, Weston super Mart 28/07/2016

Unfortunately for this hotel, I am on a mission to highlight any establishment advertising under the 'Best Western' brand, that does not fulfil its commitment to its loyal guests. Best Western changed all their rewards scheme back in January and rather than offering loyal guests any discounts or free papers, etc. They have lauded the new 'Free Welcome Gift' and recognition as a 'Loyal Member' of their scheme. I have spent many nights since January in many different 'Best Western' hotels and have NEVER received the lauded 'Welcome Gift', and as on this occasion was not even recognised as a member, at many places. Upon arrival I handed over my rewards card, (I am a Diamond Select' member, the highest level you can achieve, based upon your loyalty). The young lady took the card, wrote the number down and then handed it back: No Welcome as a member! No Welcome Gift! No Offer of a Room Upgrade! It should be made clear that I only chose this hotel because it is part The Best Western Group. Apart from the issues with the Rewards scheme, the reception experience was pretty anyway: The lady did not ask if I had stayed at the hotel before, when I asked for directions to the lifts, I was told , "Just There' and a finger was pointed around the corner from reception. I was not asked if I wanted a wake up call or newspaper, and when I asked for a morning paper, the paper was not delivered to my room, but left without any guest or room identification, amongst all the other free papers in the restaurant, available for other guests to browse through before I arrived to claim it. Unless of course, when I complained that my paper had not been delivered, the receptionist simply handed me the one from the pile of free newspapers in the restaurant! The main issue with this Hotel, is that it is an old hotel, with old fashioned heating and radiators and it has no fans or air conditioning in the rooms, making it unbearable to sleep, sit or even stay in the room for long periods. The only other complaint, which I understand is not really the hotels fault, but should be mentioned, as advice for other guests), is that the place is plagued by seagulls, I should imagine that there is less noise and fewer seagulls, on the local landfill site! Along with the heat, they kept me awake all night and were a constant annoyance. I should state that the staff in the restaurant for breakfast, were very friendly and welcoming and were a credit to the hotel, perhaps they should give some advice on 'Customer Service' and offering a welcome, to the members of staff manning reception.

Hotel M, Public Relations Manager at BEST WESTERN Grand Hotel, responded to this review
Dear mhancorn, We are very sorry that you didn't feel your experience at the Best Western Grand Hotel met your expectations. We have checked our records and we were fully booked on the night of your arrival, therefore unfortunately we were unable to offer you the free room upgrade as we would normally have done. Where we are aware that a guest is a member prior to their arrival to the hotel we do offer a welcome gift which is placed in the guest's room before they arrive. Again we are sorry for the issues you experienced during your stay with us, all guest feedback is welcomed and helps us to improve the service we provide in the future. Regards, Hannah

"Hartlepools Grandest relic"

frequentflyer017, Leeds, United Kingdom 16/07/2016

I'm certain in its day, this was indeed a fine building, and indeed, you can still see the finery on show. But the place is in tatters. Old window frames either painted or screwed shut, never to be reopened. Huge windows, so big that the blinds the hotel has bought aren't big enough to blackout the rooms. Antiquated central heating systems with 2 inch pipes running through your room so the heating is permanently on full effectively. The pervasive stench of curry from the onsite Indian restaurant. Add to this the broken taps, missing plugs and minimal daytime parking facilities and you struggle to see how this place can justify its £70-£80 charges per night.

Hotel M, Public Relations Manager at BEST WESTERN Grand Hotel, responded to this review
Dear frequentflyer017, Firstly thank you for taking the time to leave us a review and we are pleased you appreciated the character of our historic hotel. Please accept our sincerest apologies for the issues you encountered during your stay with us, your honest feedback enables us to improve upon the service we provide to all of our guests. "Really Poor Hotel"

Phil P, Oxford, United Kingdom 10/07/2016

Third time we have stayed here and there has been no hot water every time. Our room was stiflingly hot and the walls had big damp patches. The room hadn't been cleaned well and we found the last guests "subway" bag behind the curtains. Only redeeming feature was the very friendly staff serving breakfast.

Hotel M, Public Relations Manager at BEST WESTERN Grand Hotel, responded to this review
Dear Phil P, Thank you very much for taking the time to leave us a review. We are sorry about the issues you encountered during your stay, where possible if a guest is not 100% satisfied with their room we will always offer them an alternative room. We will pass on your kind comments to the breakfast staff, and we hope you will consider staying with us again in the future. Regards, Hannah

604johnnyboy, Bo'ness, United Kingdom 03/07/2016

We booked this hotel as we were taking our girls with us se we though this would be a treat for them. Firstly parking is a problem, at the weekend you can use the council offices car park but I don't know what you would do during the week. The hotel its self is pretty tired, our room was just OK at best with a very poor bathroom, shocking shower and the room its self was so hot. My daughters did better than we did by getting a suite but we all complained about the noise outside that basically starts at 11 pm for hours, and then of course you get woken up in the wee hours with drunk people heading to their rooms. I suppose its OK for 1 night but we could not have stayed any longer. The bar is really set out for the locals and is from what we saw the place to be after 11PM. The staff are nice and friendly though.

"Grand Hotel Hartlepool."

User 22/06/2016

Got a great deal on a suite for a couple of nights. The room was huge. There was plenty of space and the furniture really comfy. The decor around the hotel is in need of a little TLC in places but certainly not scruffy by any means. The rooms were warm and the staff were excellent at all times. We dined in the Indian restaurant which is technically located in the cellar. Again the staff were warm and friendly and the food was enjoyable. The bar area was very busy due to England playing. The atmosphere was good humoured and the staff worked hard to keep everyone happy. On the whole no complaints.

"Wild Western"

User 19/06/2016

This hotel certainly labours under the delusion of grandeur. We stayed here 2 weeks ago and found the place to be highly overpriced for what it is. Fixtures & fittings as so outdated they'd make the Bates Motel look hi-tech. The room and indeed the hotel throughout was dirty and care worn. After attending to business in the early hours we returned to find the area outside the hotel near the front door an absolute disgrace. We were greeted by vomit and broken glass and cigarette ends all of the front entrance at around 03.00 hrs. These were not removed in a fashion until at least 10.00 hrs. Breakfast was more like the fayre you'd expect for a hotel full of contractors, which is probably its stable form of income during the week! Most staff are polite and helpful but we found the hotel manager extremely unwelcoming if not down right rude on our next visit. So much so we happily decamped to another chain hotel in Hartlepool. Best Western, more like wild western - didn't even have record of our booking this time! You will not be getting my repeat custom or any recommendation. Your room rates do not reflect your facilities, the standard of housekeeping and maintenance and indeed hospitality.

the hotel is quite grand i'll give it that. the staff and service are good. The building is obviously getting on a bit - the floors creak and the bathroom was dated but the whole place has been decorated/carpeted recently and it feels clean. the radiators in the hallways are constantly on making it really warm especially as you get up to the 3rd floor. the wifi is appaling. not even able to stream youtube there is a tasty curry restaurant in the basement. not sure how much smell gets to the first floor rooms?

LynneT551, Northampton 05/06/2016

Stayed for just one night in a suite. The room was massive and easily held the two double beds and sofa. The hotel transports you back in time, it has very ceilings and the lifts creaks a bit, but it all adds to the character. We will definitely book again as it was really good value for the money.

"Last minute night away "

Simon O, Newcastle upon Tyne, United Kingdom 22/05/2016

We took advantage of an offer we saw and as it was my wife's birthday I thought it would be a good idea. We've never been to Hartlepool before. We were net by a lovely girl in reception. Very welcoming, so far so good. We had upgraded out room to an 'executive' room and I have to say I was slightly disappointed by what we were given, the pictures on website were obviously portraying their best! Having said this it was still nice, bathroom slightly tired but everything was there you could need and it was clean. The courtesy tray was well stocked and there was a hairdryer in the room. The main negative was that the room was boiling!!! The radiators were on full and the weather was lovely outside. No air con but there were two plug in blowers which we soon made use of. After a walk into the town (which we found soul-less) we returned to the sports bar and we felt only happy to have one drink there because it soon got very loud and there's were a couple of domestics going on that looked like they could escalate!! We then went to the Mumbai majestic restaurant which is situated under the hotel, what a fantastic restaurant with lovely staff. I will do a separate glowing review for this! Very comfy beds, a huge double and a separate single. Nice linen. Breakfast the next morning was waitress served which is nicer than the help yourself option. Very nice full English, the continental items my wife enjoyed as well. A very good selection. All in all probably won't return to Hartlepool but the hotel boasts some wonderful Art Deco features and only slightly falls short of living up to its name.

Hotel M, Public Relations Manager at BEST WESTERN Grand Hotel, responded to this review
Dear Simon O, Firstly may I thank you for taking the time to leave us a review, the hotel relies upon the feedback of our guests to constantly improve upon the service we provide and we would be unable to do this without reviews like yours. Please accept our apologies for the minor issues with the heat in your room, and the noise from the bar but are very pleased that you enjoyed a warm welcome from our staff, enjoyed the Mumbai restaurant and your breakfast in the morning. We hope you will stay with us again if you make a return visit to Hartlepool. Regards, Hannah

GuyRopeTrip, Cheltenham 21/05/2016

Had a pleasant one night stay. Room was clean and comfortable. The TV was a bit small for the room - especially given where it was mounted. The sports bar is an unusual yet welcome addition to a hotel of this type. Good choice at breakfast. Friendly staff at all times.

We stayed at the Grand last Sunday night as part of my sons wedding there, We had a great day and were well catered for the hotel itself has seen grander days and in places needs some upkeep ,but the staff were great and really looked after us , the Wedding reception food was lovely as was the breakfast the next day , The room we stayed in was very large and the bed was massive and very comfortable , thanks again for a great day.

"Highs and lows"

canadabound, durham 06/05/2016

We spent our wedding night here in 1986 so 30 years later thought we would see what had changed. I can see how the hotel attracts such differing reviews First impressions approaching the hotel having to push past a crowd of wedding guests smoking on the front steps-no one had the common sense to let guests through with their luggage The reception staff however were very friendly and efficient and advised us to use the council car park next door which had a wall around and as was weekend would not be a problem having to vacate early next morning We had an executive room at room only rate £63 if paid in advance-for that price was OK Room a mixture of old and new-some parts like old doors and vintage plumbing adds a certain charm However the woodchip wallpaper on ceiling and old damp patches don't! Modern bed covers and blinds look good but the frayed net curtain underneath looks tacky Bathroom seems to be the same old fashioned bath from 30 years prior complete with plastic 70's style taps Toilet modern but with a cheap flimsy toilet seat that moves when you sit on it! The sports bar will come as a shock to those expecting a hotel lounge-it's open to public and full of pool tables and wipe clean surfaces which are needed with the spilled beer as people crowd in Mumbai Indian restaurant in basement but also open to public is the star of this hotel A happy hour between 5 and 7 each night where 4 courses for £10.95 Some of the nicest Indian food I've tasted and couldn't manage all 4 courses Again for the price we paid and the fun of revisiting on our 30th anniversary it was a good night but we would be unlikely to repeat

Hotel M, Public Relations Manager at BEST WESTERN Grand Hotel, responded to this review

The Grand is one of those old Grand Hotels that were once the life and soul of seaside towns. It retains a lot of its grandeur and the staff adhere to high standards of service. The rooms are comfortable and clean and the hotel is well situated for the harbour and attractions. We stay here every time we come to the North East on business and it does a fine job.

"Not impressed!"

JoAYorkshire, Yorkshire 02/05/2016

Having stayed at a "Best Western" a few months previously we decided to opt for this hotel, hoping it would offer the same service and high degree of satisfaction as we had previously encountered. We were wrong! We had a nice clean and spacious room on the third floor. (Shame it wasn't soundproofed) On returning to our room after a busy day we had been aware a wedding had taken place in the hotel during the afternoon. Due to the very loud musical sounds we presumed there was a live group appearing to end off the celebrations. We later discovered it was just a one man band. (From inside our room we could clearly hear the songs that he was singing. The noise was simply deafening). We went to a friends room on the first floor and their room literally was vibrating. We went downstairs and saw other residents who had the same opinion as ourselves. In the end we went out as we couldn't stand listening to the noise in our room, sleep would have been an impossibility. Yes, we could have complained but - it was someones special day and we didn't want to spoil things in any way. Like other guests we were of the opinion a hotel representative should have requested the sound should have been lowered. We returned around midnight and the loud music had stopped. The following morning we kept a look out for the requested newspaper outside our room door but it never appeared. Looking forward to the "Full English" treat at breakfast time I discovered that there were no fried eggs - just a large empty container. I asked the waitress if there were more supplies and she immediately attended to our requested. Sadly these arrived after we had finished. Upon checking out i was hoping to share our experiences with the Receptionist but was never asked. I did politely inform her that the newspaper had failed to arrive (it was after 10.00 by this time). She disappeared in the direction of the dining hall and re-appeared with our paper and offered her apologies. I think next time we are in the area we will look elsewhere for accommodation.

User 28/04/2016

Stayed here for one night with my fiancé. Super rooms and reasonably priced. Will stay again at this hotel. Shower in the room didn't get that warm and the hairdryer did not work. We told the staff on reception and they said they would sort it and thanked us for feedback. All good!

"A 3 Star Hotel..Nothing Better"

watchdog2757, London, United Kingdom 03/04/2016

This is an average 3 star hotel, quite why reviewers on here rate it very good or excellent is beyond me. I had a single room for a one night stay it was functional, I expect no more and I am old enough to know you are never going to get a view in such a room. The decor and ambiance of the hotel fitted in with its 1900 build heritage and did give an insight as to why it was called the Grand. It's centrally located which is great except when until 3am in the morning the chavs are outside the front shouting at each other..friends staying at the same time had this pleasure...Staff for breakfast seemed friendly enough, cooked breakfast whilst fresh was a little tight...the sausages, or I should say chipolatas were cheap and salty, maybe that's a North East delicacy ? Was disappointed with reception, when on arrival at 1.40pm we were told we could not access the rooms until 2.00pm, and that was not because they were not ready. Consequently did not access the room till much later as had to meet up with other friends in town. Would have been pleasant to have had a quick wash and brush up before heading out especially after a 5 hour drive up. So overall average, no better or worse than I expected, and certainly not the Best Western ever, but then probably not the worst.

Hotel M, Public Relations Manager at BEST WESTERN Grand Hotel, responded to this review
Dear watchdog2757, Thank you for taking the time to leave us a review, we rely upon the honest feedback of our guests to continue to improve upon the service we provide. We are very proud of our grand, historical building and are very sorry that you had some issues with noise, we are sure that you appreciate that as a town centre hotel a certain level of noise is unavoidable, however please accept our sincere apologies if you feel this adversely affected your stay. We do offer an early-check in service, unfortunately, this would have had to have been pre-organised with reception as the rooms are not guaranteed to be serviced before the check-in time of 2pm. Again, many thanks for your feedback and we hope to see you again. Regards, Hannah

"Best Western Best Place"

Wendy T, Nottinghamshire, United Kingdom 29/02/2016

2nd time we have stayed in this hotel, good value for money and the breakfast sets you up for the day. Staff are all very helpful nothing to much trouble. Plenty of off road parking and WiFi in all the rooms. Location is fantastic just across the road from the shopping centre and just a short walk from the retail park and football ground. The restaurant has changed to an Indian since our first stay but apart from a faint smell of curry as you go through the main doors in an evening it didn't affect the rest of the hotel.

"Great Dinner Dance Venue"

pearcedavid2, Hartlepool, United Kingdom 08/02/2016

I was part of a group of friends that organised a Charity Dinner Dance in the ballroom at the Grand Hotel. From start to finish the assistance from the Events Manager & her staff was second to none. They could not have been more accommodating. On the night the whole event went without a hitch. The food & service was superb, the bar pricing was most acceptable and the singer and disco provided in the package were both excellent. The event was a great success. We raised several hundred pounds for various charities and most importantly 100 guests went home very happy. We will definitely be back again next year ! Highly recommended for functions such as ours.

Jankop, Liverpool 02/02/2016

Just returned from a nights stay in this hotel - at the rate of £97.50 per night b/b I think this hotel is vastly over-priced. No hot water in the shower and a really very noisy bathroom when using toilet or shower. On the positive side, the breakfast was good and the waiting on staff and reception staff were very good. This hotel nearly gets it right but not quite and as already mentioned is not worth £97.50 per night.

"Another Excellent Stay"

Damian L, Sunderland, United Kingdom 02/02/2016

Once again the world's hottest hotel excelled itself. The check-in staff were friendly and helpful, the hotel was immaculately clean and the breakfast was perfect. I would recommend this hotel to anyone looking for somewhere to stay in Hartlepool.

"Christmas Night Out"

jackiewurz, hartlepool 28/01/2016

Just to let you know that I and my friends had a brilliant night on the 15th January 2016. It was great music and a very good atmosphere. The food was lovely, hot warm and presented nicely on the plate, which only added to the enjoyment to the meal. Congratulation on what we thought was a very successful night, to your planning and to the staff.

"Great birthday night"

User 24/01/2016

Went out in Hartlepool for my birthday. The hotel is a very high spec place. Lives up to the expectations I had for it. The rooms are spacious and comfortable. You can't hear any noise from the sports bar below. Overall a fantastic place to stay and in the centre of the main nightlife.

"Rockin the night away in Hartlepool"

Boxerscott, Scottish Borders 05/01/2016

We stayed in one of the Junior suites when visiting the adjacent Hartlepool Town Hall to enjoy a fantastic gig by the Kast Off Kinks!. The room was very warm and clean, a king size bed, and a great breakfast, quick service, friendly staff. Not the best value for money when comparing it to outside bar prices and eateries. Large sports type bar open to non residents. We have nothing negative to say about this hotel as we enjoyed our night out in Friendly good value for money Hartlepool.

"Decent stay but not for long stay"

Rebecca D, Middlesbrough, United Kingdom 03/01/2016

I have stayed a few times because the staff are so lovely but I havn't had any hot water the past few stays. I rang up before I arrived and asked if there was any problems with the hot water, I was advised no so me and my partner went along for a nice night away, reception staff on arrival were lovely, was told I had a free upgrade to an executive so was well chuffed, got to the room, was not an executive at all and no hot water!! Had to fill the kettle up numerous times to have a hot bath, next morning shower was freezing so ended up leaving without a shower. Would stay again definitely as staff are lovely but please can I have hot water????

Hotel M, General Manager at BEST WESTERN Grand Hotel, responded to this review
Dear Rebecca D, Thank you for your review of the Grand hotel, I am sorry that you didn't receive hot water on your last stay, On your next stay we will ensure you are well looked after, Kind regards Craig

"Works Christmas party "

Liam N, Newcastle upon Tyne, United Kingdom 06/12/2015

Went here for our work Christmas party, there were roughly 38 of us. For £35 we got soup for starter which may as well just have been water with a potato in, it was so bland. Our main was basically a microwave meal, the mash was similar to school, you know when it feels like there's still a jacket potato in your mash? Yeah that was the mash. I must give credit where it's due, the dessert was decent but I'm not sure what it was, it was passed off as shortcake but I'm still not entirely sure. Overall the food was so poor, I wasn't best pleased as I had purposely not ate too much during the day because I thought it was going to be a big portion and nice tasting food. How wrong could I possibly be? The queue for the drinks was so stupidly managed, also when you got to the front, the bar staff were quite rude and blunt. I upgraded my drinks package for £5 which was probably not worth it looking back but hey ho. We all unanimously decided that we definitely wouldn't be going there again and I won't be recommending this place to anybody. Merry Christmas

SarahSRP, Greater London, United Kingdom 28/11/2015

So the first thing to say is the staff are extremely friendly. However... 1. There was no hot water in my room or in any of the rooms on my floor. The staff found me a room that I showered in that delayed me by 45 minutes and involved me walking half way across the hotel at 730am. 2. It's 11pm and my room is vibrating from the noise of the party happening in the hotel downstairs. I'm delivering a training course tomorrow morning and I'm so tired. No idea when it's going to stop butt doesn't sound like it will any time soon. 3. My room is freezing but there is a fan heater that I've switched on as the radiator isn't working. 4. Breakfast was nice. 5. The rooms are very clean and comfortable for a short stay. 6. Parking for the weekend is ok but apparently not easy during the week. 7. I will never stay here again, ever.

Loved my stay here. The room was decorated with a modern touch, plenty of tea and coffee and a decent sized kettle and mugs. My only issue with the room was that the light switches by the bed didn't work so couldn't switch main light off other than by the switch near the door. Had a takeaway from Mumbai! Huge portions and excellent food. Shame that I couldn't stay longer. Overall the staff and accommodation was fab. Would recommend

"Large room, fantastic food"

User 19/11/2015

The room was really spacious but TV was a bit too small/far away from the bed and it could've done with a larger desk. Free wifi always a bonus. The Indian restaurant downstairs is easily the best Indian food I've had in a long time, and the early bird menu is fantastic value.

"Huge rooms"

Margot1967, Emsworth, United Kingdom 15/11/2015

Good value midweek stay. My huge room looked as if it had quite recently been refurbished and was comfortable and spotlessly clean. The staff were helpful and friendly and the breakfast was good. Had a reasonable curry in the Indian Restaurant downstairs. Car parking was a bit odd - very limited spaces in the public car park over the road.

"Not bad.."

smoggietraveller, middlesbrough 15/11/2015

We stayed at the grand after a wedding and overall its a nice 3* hotel, the rooms are very spacious and clean, the staff are friendly and helpful and its in a good central location with decent parking provisions. The rooms have large, comfortable beds but are a little rough around the edges - our dressing table lamp didnt appear to work and the screen door for the shower doesnt stay in place for example. The shower wasnt the best either at a little more than a trickle, but it was hot and again the bathroom was very clean. Breakfast wasn't great as we'd requested it sent to the room and most of it was cold by the time it arrived. I think that if we were to stay again, we'd probably opt to eat elsewhere. Overall though, we had a good nights sleep and £60 for a very central hotel isnt a bad price.

"Nice hotel"

User 08/11/2015

Nice hotel and good facilities in the room tv, coffee station, big comfy bed. Friendly staff only downfall the room was so hot we did have a fan but felt the room was a little warm when trying to sleep. There was noise from the bar below but that finished at around 11.30

"A nights stay "

Ed F, Llanover, United Kingdom 31/10/2015

Stayed here last week , booked because Hartlepool isn't awash with great hotels , big old place with big old rooms , had a great curry in the in-house curry house , nice food . The only issue I had was that the room was far too hot and the radiators couldn't be changed , would prefer an option to change temp's , other than that good hotel .

"Great rooms. "

lloydhollett007, Margate, United Kingdom 24/10/2015

Amazing room. Spacious, modern and clean. Disappointed with the noise from the evening entertainment. Although it stopped at midnight, I was on the 3rd floor and could clearly hear every song being sung... And couldn't get to sleep until then.

"Folk Festival accomodation"

User 20/10/2015

We spent 3 nights here during the Hartlepool Folk Festival. The staff were, without exception, delightful. We were made to feel welcome and nothing seemed to be too much trouble for them. The hotel has been updated pretty well, but there are always compromises; the lift is a bit clunky and slow, the heating system lacks finesse. Having said that, the hotel overall is a very comfortable place to stay with decent size rooms with very comfortable beds, a decent, freshly cooked breakfast and free wi-fi. Parking is a bit of a lottery; we arrived at about 4pm and there were no hotel spaces left in what is otherwise a pay & display car park but the receptionist gave us the cash for the pay & display which we greatly appreciated. Over the weekend the parking is fine as the council car park is available. The hotel is well situated and public transport works well so not much need to move the car once you have arrived. This was our first trip to Hartlepool and our lasting impression will be of a very friendly welcome.

"Stayed there when I was at Hartlepool Folk Festival"

rdownes7, Maryport, United Kingdom 19/10/2015

Stately old character hotel.Comfy warm king size bed. Bathroom facilities fine.Parking a in council car park slightly awkward arrangement. The young female receptionist was so charming and quietly efficient.Public transport from the hotel to the Headland where the festival was happening.Excellent breakfast menu and charming waitresses.Cost of £40/night with breakfast was a deal with the festival organization

"Could do with a refurb in the rooms, but overall ok!"

Rachel220793, Beverley, United Kingdom 19/10/2015

I stayed here on Saturday night with my boyfriend as we were attending an engagement party in Hartlepool for some family/friends. The hotel on arrival was nice and the reception area all looked very modern. Check-in was a bit of a faff as the girl that dealt with our paperwork overly confused everything and didn't really have a clue what was going on when actually it was quite straight forward. The hotel is a very old building and the massive keys were given to us to unlock our rooms which felt very old fashioned...but not a problem. Our room was very spacious and the decor was all lovely. Tea/Coffee/Hot Chocolate/Biscuits were all provided, Hair dryer and TV provided, bed very comfy but the complaint we have would be the bathroom. The shower was very poor and only in the morning did we actually have hot water (and I say hot, it was more luke warm). Bar within the hotel was good. Cheap alcohol and there was a band on which were actually really good. We didn't pay for breakfast but other members who we knew that stayed at this hotel, did pay for the breakfast and said it really wasn't that great for the price. It was VERY slow service and there were not enough tables to seat everyone in the breakfast room. It wasn't a self service normal type of breakfast but one that you had to order and the service was very slow (only 2 waitresses on for the full room). I would stay here again if I had to as it seems to be the better hotel in hartlepool but overall wasn't that impressed in the end. First impressions good but after a night there, it wasn't as good as it looked initially.

"Our stay at Grand Hotel"

Delphine B, Redditch, United Kingdom 19/10/2015

We stayed at Grand Hotel in October for one night. We had a double room, which was very comfortable, clean and had all the facilities you would expect to see in a Best Western hotel. Breakfast was good, you could have continental and full English. We did not use the bar or restaurant on site as we were out on the evening. Staff was pleasant and I liked the fact that it is an old building, it looked very nice from outside. Car park is free opposite the hotel, you get a pass when you check in.

"Lovely stay."

Tim K, Middlesbrough 18/10/2015

Stayed for 1 night in an executive room. Very comfortable room with everything you need supplied. Great reception and fantastic friendly staff throughout the hotel. Spotless room 321. Thanks to the housekeeping staff. The only other comments are the room was very warm but the windows did open and a big fan was in the room. The temperature of the shower was only just acceptable. We enjoyed our stay and will use this hotel again. I highly recommend it. Thank you .

"OK for an overight stop"

naomi278, London, United Kingdom 16/10/2015

"Back to its Usual High Standards"

Damian L, Sunderland, United Kingdom 12/10/2015

The last time I stayed at this hotel the breakfast was terrible which was the first time this has ever happened. I'm please to say that the breakfast was back to its usual high standards. As always, the hotel was perfect and amazing value for money.

"Amazing wedding venue"

Katie B, Teesside 04/10/2015

We had our wedding reception here on June 6th 2009.. It was perfect from start to finish.. The room was laid out how we wanted and me and my husband made a grand entrance down the stair case to our waiting guests.. We had exclusive use of the smaller rooms downstairs for the buffets and the dj was good too.. Our day was perfect and I always recommend the hotel to our friends who are getting married

"Curry, Cobra and a bed for the night – this really is pure heaven!"

MatthewMoggridge, London, United Kingdom 29/09/2015

Any hotel with an Indian restaurant has to be worthy of consideration. What can be better than an Indian meal without the hassle of having to drive home afterwards? Hartlepool's Best Western Grand Hotel is home to Mumbai, an Indian restaurant chain – according to the hotel's receptionist – but whether a chain or an independent it has to be the way ahead for the British hotel industry when you consider that Indian food is the new steak and kidney pie. Normally when I stay in a hotel with a grand name – be it The Grand Hotel or the Majestic or something similarly lofty – I'm often disappointed, as the hotel tends not to deliver on some aspect implied by its name. I expect there to be rough edges. But while I strained my eyes to find something out of place or not in keeping with the word ‘grand' I was hard-pushed to find anything worth mentioning. The check-in was simple, the receptionist friendly. The room was way above expectation: large and roomy, everything worked, including the WiFi and the shower and the television (on which I watched Top Gear while waiting for my dinner companion). Could anything be better than this? Top Gear, a curry and a decent night's kip? I was in hotel heaven. The Grand Hotel Hartlepool is brilliant and I advise anybody embarking upon a trip to Teesside to consider it as a base for his or her stay in the North East. It lives up to its name; it has plenty of polished wood and creaky floors and a large stained glass window on the first floor landing – all classic ingredients of a ‘grand hotel'. In addition to Mumbai, there's a large sports bar – not my scene, but that's beside the point. When I checked out the receptionist told me that there was an Italian restaurant prior to Mumbai's arrival so I'm guessing that the food and beverage operation here has always been good. Breakfast was good too, although I started to wonder, as I made my way downstairs, whether the most important meal of the day would be served in the Indian restaurant. I hoped not as I couldn't face the smell of Indian food first thing in the morning. Fortunately, the hotel had thought this through; there was a dedicated (and very pleasant) breakfast room adjacent to the front desk on the ground floor. As with most hotels there was a choice of a cooked breakfast or the continental offering of cheese, fresh fruit, bread and cereal. I opted for both but had as my cooked option scrambled egg on toast. Prior to this I had Coco Pops, tea, fresh fruit and a fudge-flavoured yoghurt. The breakfast service was friendly and unobtrusive, just the way I like it. Checking out was also trouble-free. I left my suitcase behind the front desk and briefly explored the Middleton Grange shopping centre across the road – it's the same as any other shopping centre (or mall) in the UK. I enjoyed Hartlepool and could have done with an extra night at the Grand Hotel, as there's plenty to explore in the locality. I suppose the only problem with spending more than one night is the thought of two Indian meals in a row, but there's always the sports bar and I'm sure there are plenty of restaurants nearby too.

"Lovely hotel, shame about the sports bar"

ShellyScunthorpe, Scunthorpe 29/09/2015

We stayed 2 nights for a wedding, everything was superb, just a shame there wasn't a quieter lounge with sofa's to relax in without the damn football on. A nice treat was the Mumbai restaurant, got to be the best i've had for a long time, staff were great, service fab.

"Give it a miss folks."

lynne B, North West England, United Kingdom 29/09/2015

Nowhere to sit and have a drink. Sports bar heaving, very little seating. The whole place needs some TLC. Reasonable breakfast ruined by stone cold plates, when warm ones requested I received nothing but a blank expression.

"Need to do something about the bar..."

N D, Peterborough, United Kingdom 28/09/2015

We booked an executive room which was a big room on the corner of the hotel. It was clean and had recently been decorated. On check in we were warned that a band was playing in the bar that night and should be finished before midnight. Surely, this is information that should be imparted on booking when you have the option of going elsewhere, not on check in. We were on the third floor and not directly above the bar but could feel the music through the floor. We had arranged to meet family in the bar. They remembered the bar from its glory days and were quite dismayed by the music which was so loud we could not talk to each other - and this was before the band started. If might be better midweek. The hotel was certainly value for money, but the bar needs to be improved as the noise effects guests whether they use it or not.
