"Friendly and comfortable"

vincentoneill05, Woking, United Kingdom 14/09/2021

We stayed here overnight on our way up to Scotland to climb Ben Nevis. The room was very smart and looked almost newly decorated. We ate in a local pub as the evening was warm and sunny and we could sit outside. This was perfect for our onward travels. Very polite staff.

"Birthday celebrations"

Christine190793, Gateshead, United Kingdom 11/09/2021

Stayed here for 2 nights for my birthday. Lovely touch when arriving in the room to find a card and box of chocolates to help me celebrate. Thank you. Reception staff very helpful when we checked in, especially Ashley and Moses. On my actual birthday we ate in at the hotel, breakfast had been very good and we hoped that this would continue. Fortunately my meal was good - fish and chips - but my husband ordered the pie, big mistake! This arrived at the table looking very over cooked, dark brown pastry in fact. Meat tasted good but then it turned out that base of pie was soggy? Mentioned this to the waiter who apologised and returned at least 10 mins later with another. Unfortunately this pie was in the same state and it was refused. Husband ended up for his meal the cheese board as didn't want to be eating on his own as my meal was then finished. Although we were both given complimentary desserts or a drink we felt that some apology from a senior member of staff might have been more appropriate instead of leaving this to the waiter himself who was quite embarrassed in the end. It definitely put a damper on my birthday celebrations - the reason why we were staying here after all. Breakfast the following morning wasn't as good either - we arrived early as needed to be away. Order taken, cereal arrived for hubby but after 10 mins we had to ask where my porridge was. Then there was a further delay for the actual breakfast - needed to ask again. It had obviously been sitting there all along as by then my scrambled egg had dried out - definitely not as nice as the day before. Also needed to ask for our toast - 2 slices were then produced for one of us so needed to ask for more. Don't know what was going on at all.

"Shabby & tired"

jobT7102PI, Grantham, United Kingdom 09/09/2021

Wifi did not work on first floor, club room tiny, unfinished work on door frame, shower curtain not fixed to ceiling, car park too small, got parked in. Pillows like concrete. Room supplies not replenished after one night so no milk (I get no cleaning after one night but check the supplies!)

"Fab stay at the George"

User 09/09/2021

Great traditional hotel with lots of character but with modern well equipped bedrooms comfy beds & excellent shower Staff are all professional friendly and helpful with even the General manager Dave visible & helping out Lovely food good portions & excellent value Would defiantly stay again if we are the area Thanks also to Richard who took time out to show us the ballroom and tell us some of the history of the hotel

"Tired and old!"

ladyluck0612, Newcastle upon Tyne, United Kingdom 08/09/2021

The trouble with this hotel is that it looks nothing like the website shows. The club rooms were a joke, there was nothing ‘club' about them. It made us feel completely conned, as if we'd checked into a completely different hotel. The bar and restaurant looked so nice online but believe me they don't look like that at all. The place is like an old 70's hotel, very run down and tired. It's a shame as it could be really nice. It looks like they have a handful of refurbished rooms and I guess they maybe the rooms that have been photographed online but the two rooms we were shown were like stepping back in time - 1930's grandmas house! I honestly can't understand how the reviews are as good as they are. It completely ruined our special escape and even though the staff were pleasant and we had wine and chocolates in our room, it still didn't compensate for the disappointment.

"Enjoyable stay, central location, efficient service"

Gareth J, Bath, United Kingdom 08/09/2021

I stayed here for two nights as part of a cycling holiday and the hotel provided a comfortable 2-day stopover. Check in was efficient and staff quickly found a safe place to store my bike. My single room was a little small but quite characterful. Breakfasts were of good quality and table service was excellent. Evening meal service was rather 'too' efficient to a point that I felt I was being rushed to get through my meal, with different staff coming to my table regularly to check how I was doing. This may not have been intentional but it did make me feel a little uncomfortable!

"Excellent food and service ."

User 30/08/2021

My wife and I went to the George Hotel for a meal to celebrate my birthday , first visit to the hotel since recent change of ownership . It is just as good as ever , the service was excellent , smart, courteous and attentive with being overpowering . One of the main reasons we chose the George was because I have IBS and it now has a good range of gluten free dishes on the menu , due to being Sunday the menu is limited , but with Sunday roast available all day there was still ample choice and all g/f dishes were available , there is also a range of vegan dishes as well but we didn't check availability of these . We both ordered seafood basket starters , I ordered Gin and Lime Salmon main and wife ordered Sunday roast . We had a bottle of Sauvignon Blanc which was brought and served properly and was very nice , not a long wait for food , Seafood basket was excellent , Large Prawns , Squid , Fish goujons , all very well cooked with a sourdough roll and sweet chilli dip , both main meals both very good , Salmon perfectly cooked with seasonal vegetables and potatoes and the Roast beef was very good as well . We both had puddings which were g/f Chocolate Torte and a Gin and Lime Cheesecake , both lovely . Very reasonably priced as the Sunday menu is 3 courses for just over £15 . The only criticism we had was the Seafood basket was huge , one between two as sharing platter would be ample but that's all . Lovely old fashioned comfortable surroundings with excellent service and food at reasonable prices .

"The George Hotel"

User 25/08/2021

We arrived to the George hotel and we needed our car to be looked at so the reception were very helpful and rang round some garages for us. They also let us check in to one of our rooms early to which was really good as we needed to unpack our car. The Wifi only works downstairs in the communal area. The staff are very friendly and helpful too. The food is average for the price and the brakefast is average too specially for £14.50. The location is great for shops, pubs and restaurants but I suggest if you want to eat out find somewhere and book. We didnt have a car for a day and a half so finding stuff to do with the kids were abit difficult. Apart from that the stay was good.

"Afternoon tea at the George hotel"

User 20/08/2021

My mother had been given a present of afternoon tea at the George hotel in Penrith and took her friend with her this week . Despite having called on a number of occasions before going when they arrived they were told that there was no note of their booking The manager became involved and suggested that my mother had called a different hotel insinuating that that due to her age she was in the wrong No apology was offered .This was an expensive gift and the service received was totally unacceptable

"OK for the money. "

STEVEUK1, London, United Kingdom 17/08/2021

We had 2 club rooms on the 1st floor for 1 night as a stopover. Check in was easy and staff were friendly. At 7pm on a Thursday parking was limited and we had to kind of create the very last space. Rooms were clean but the bathroom in our room was really small. The sink being right against the toilet. I kind of assumed a "Club room" might be a suite of sorts but it was just a double room. Our daughters room next door was much bigger so do enquire when booking. I've forgotten our room numbers so apologies for that but the larger room was at the end of the corridor. Seagull noise early a.m woke me as the windows aren't double glazed but apart from that a good experience overall. I think it's probably reasonable at £80 per room in August apart from the tiny en suite. We didn't eat there so can't comment.

"Nice old hotel with quirky charm."

UkDev, Devon, United Kingdom 09/08/2021

We stayed at the George hotel for 2 nights on our way to Scotland. It is a good location for exploring the Lake District. The hotel has old charm with wonky floors and tilting landings. We stayed in a standard double room at the front of the hotel. The room was on the small side but had plenty of storage, a comfortable bed and a good selection of tea/coffee/ water. The bathroom had a good shower over the bath and nice complimentary toiletries. The only issue we had was when we first went into the bathroom it had long black hair ( not my hair colour) on the wall in the bathroom. After speaking with the housekeeping lady , she recleaned the bathroom. We ate in the hotel both nights and the food was nice. The car park for this hotel is located at the rear of the property so get the car park postcode from the hotel to make this easier to find. Also if you are a light sleeper, request a room to the rear of the hotel as it can be quite noisy outside the front of the hotel. The staff at this hotel are an asset as they are extremely friendly and the service from the wait staff was outstanding.

"Quaint, but noisy"

May-_-Tripp, UK 01/08/2021

The hotel is very old, which means it has lots of ‘character', but this sadly means that the floors are very creaky and there is limited soundproofing between rooms. This meant that we were kept awake for much of the night by neighbours talking (or snoring) and creaking from people walking down corridors. This windows also did not fit fully so lots of road noise came in as well. The rooms did have lots of character, but you need to be aware that this comes at a cost of a good night's sleep

David Hobson, General Manager at The George Hotel, responded to this review
Thanks for taking the time to leave a review. We are in the town centre and there can be noise from the road. I will be checking the window in the room you stayed in to see if there is something we can do. Secondary glazing perhaps. I do hope you can stay again. Dave and team George

"No hot water, known problem as far back as 2019 by the sounds. Contacted hotel but have been ignored."

Meg T, Wakefield, United Kingdom 30/07/2021

Such a shame, it could be absolutely perfect! We bought a Groupon to stay here for £99 for a night in their larger room with breakfast included. When the hotel got in touch I requested a quiet room since I'm pregnant and really wanted a good night sleep. Unfortunately, quite often people were walking in and out of the door right outside our room and banging it shut very loudly. Then there was a problem with the water pressure in room 4/6 (can't remember if it was room 6 or 4 we were staying in) the one they'd put us in. There was absolutely no hot water, a staff member managed to fix it after adjusting the boiler and running the taps. But then knocked on our door a few hours later as room 4/6 had lost their pressure and they wanted us to run our taps, we were just trying to relax at this point. Then about 9pm my husband wanted to have a shower and there was again absolutely no hot water at all, by this point after my husband tried to mess with the water it was nearly 10pm so we gave up and decided we just wouldn't be able to wash here. Then to make it worse, it was a rather warm night and I wanted to keep the window open. But the staff take to smoking constantly right under our window so the room absolutely stunk of smoke and we were breathing in their second hand smoke - I'm pregnant so this is absolutely terrible. It's just such a shame, as the room is lovely, very clean, nice bathroom. Easy parking and the staff are very friendly when you talk to them. But I wouldn't stay here again because how are you meant to relax and use a room with no hot water, constant noise, and the absolute stink of smoke constantly.

David Hobson, General Manager at The George Hotel, responded to this review
Thanks Meg for the review and for pointing out where we can improve the experience we provide. We have recently had a lot of very expensive work done on our hot water system which caused air locks in the system for a good few days. The issue has now been resolved. We are also extending the hotel which has displaced the staff room temporarily so please accept my sincere apologies for this. I am looking at finding an alternative area for the team here to take a break. We did receive your email the day after your stay and were investigating the issues experienced but we then received a number of negative reviews across a number of platforms within 24 hours so not affording us the opportunity to make things right. However please accept my apologies again for the experience you had. Safe travels and I wish you well for the future. Dave and team George

"Be warned. Cancelled day before travel Unreliable"

AndrewO691, Ballaghaderreen, Ireland 29/07/2021

Hotel cancelled the day before we travelled. They said it was cancelled in error but refused to reinstate the booking as the room had been taken up by someone wanting more nights. No apology, they didn't even call. They just told they were overbooked. I had reserved it months ago. Very underhand.

David Hobson, General Manager at The George Hotel, responded to this review
Thanks for the review Mr O'Kane, After investigating we were over booked which was a genuine mistake by the hotel. Our front office manager spoke to you for around twenty minutes and sincerely apologised and found alternative accomodation at a four star hotel for twice the price that we offered to pay for. This offer was not taken up. We do not cancel peoples bookings for guests wanting to stay more nights or that are paying a higher rate. This was a genuine mistake which has been dealt with as best as we could. Again please accept my sincere apologies on the matter. Safe travels and all the best. Dave and team George

"Don't let a 3 star rating put you off!"

optsuz, London, United Kingdom 25/07/2021

I usually spend 1-2 nights at The George Hotel having moved from Penrith to London some time ago which doesn't really give this local and historic treasure a chance to shine. Having just returned from a 4 night extended stay with my Mum I can honestly say I miss it already. I'm not an expert but imagine the 3 star rating comes from the old building (beautiful and full of character), no lift, no concierge and such. BUT in the absence of such amenities you have an incredibly dedicated team who go above and beyond to help you and make your stay memorable. General Manager David Hobson takes GREAT pride in his work, his team and the hotel. For me this recent stay really made Penrith feel like home again. Centrally located for visiting each and every lake. Business, family, AND pet friendly. Like me, you might just leave a tiny piece of your heart behind on check out...

"Central Penrith"

alwindsurfer, London 05/07/2021

This is a central hotel with parking. The staff couldn't be more helpful. The rooms are clean and comfortable with everything that you could need for a nice stay. The breakfasts are great. Freshly cooked! There are bell ringers in a nearby church, so if you are a light sleeper who fancies a sleeping late, bring earplugs! Other than that - enjoy!

"Nice hotel in the center of Penrith"

paulc7892015, Tyne and Wear, United Kingdom 02/07/2021

We were visting the lakes with our dogs and this was an excellent choice hotel. The dogs were also made verw welcome. There was an option to upgrade the room which we chose to do and it was ample for the 4 of us (2 adults and 2 dogs). The breakfast was one of the best I've encoutered in a hotel. The staff are very friendly and attentive.

David Hobson, General Manager at The George Hotel, responded to this review
Thanks for taking the time to leave such a glowing review. Hope to see you again soon. Stay safe. Dave and team George

Stephen R, Newcastle, United Kingdom 30/06/2021

we stayed for 2 nights and had a good time in this old but charming hotel the staff were very friendly and professional from moses at reception with his helpful local knowledge to all the waiting staff we had breakfast on both days which was at our table very quick and very well cooked the only problem we had was our room was right next to the kitchen fan which was noisy and had all the smells from the kitchen coming in our room when the window was open so it had to be kept closed on 2 very hot days (not ideal) we would stay again but would ask for a room as far away from the kitchen as possible.

"Landmark historic hotel in centre of town"

Stevie390, Birmingham, United Kingdom 24/06/2021

The historic George Hotel, now part of the Best Western chain, is a real landmark in the absolute heart of Penrith, opening directly onto the market square. It is a super location and the building has great character. Notwithstanding being hemmed in by other historic buildings, the property has a handy private car park at the rear, off Burrowgate. Being so old, the building is inevitably a rabbit-warren of corridors and quirky, creaky elements but that's part of its charm. I just had a single room for one night's stay. Single rooms can often be tiny broom cupboards, but mine was a good size with a comfortable 1½ -width single bed, plenty of storage, large desk, and pleasantly decorated. The bathroom was large with a big corner bath and ample shelving for toiletries. The room benefitted from good wifi and hospitality tray that included biscuits and bottled water. There was minimal external noise to disturb me. Breakfast was available in a side room off the main lounge, a bit gloomy but not too bad. Service was very good and the food offer was varied and good quality. At other times, the hotel offers a comprehensive meal service and seemed to be popular with non-residents. The staff were friendly and helpful and I'd recommend this hotel.

David Hobson, General Manager at The George Hotel, responded to this review
Thanks Stevie 390 for that lovely and well articulated review. Greatly appreciate your comments about our fantastic team and I will pass them on. Hope to see you again soon. Dave and team George

"Nice roast but scrap the frozen veg please."

fluffsquid, Sittingbourne, United Kingdom 20/06/2021

Good service, and nice food. We had roast beef, which was very tasty, as was the Yorkshire pud and the roast potatoes. A nice roast slightly let down by the frozen mixed veg. A few decent fresh veg, and it would have been bang on. COVID precautions very good.

David Hobson, General Manager at The George Hotel, responded to this review
Hi Fluffsquid, Thanks for the decent review. Frozen veg?? Yesterday we rotated the vegetables between, red cabbage, creamed leeks, tenderstem broccoli and cauliflower cheese. All cooked from fresh including the bechamel for the cauliflower cheese. Not sure how this is confused, perhaps this was intended for a different business?? kind regards and safe travels. Team George

"Solid choice"

joaniebinedinburgh, Edinburgh 13/06/2021

This is a really solid three star hotel. I had an excellent room - club double in quiet location, although friends rooms were above the courtyard and front road respectively so were more disturbed at night. Well appointed room with water and tea tray. A clean was offered after one night - didn't take it - but good to know as a lot of hotels have dispensed with this due to covid. Staff were very friendly and excellent breakfast choice and quality of food. Sadly no fruit salad or croissants presumably because of covid. There is parking, but you need to go round the back of the hotel and it's a small car park with tight spaces - not for the nervous. We had a lovely stay and enjoyed a couple of drinks at the bar.

David Hobson, General Manager at The George Hotel, responded to this review
Thanks for that great review. Safe travels. Dave and team George

"Great stay."

"Wonderful stay"

Caroline C, Wakefield, United Kingdom 07/06/2021

The staff went out of their way to ensure we had e everything we required. They were super helpful (which was very much appreciated when we had a baby and dog with us!) The room was large and travel cot was very comfortable for our baby. The hotel itself has lots of character and is very well located. Would definitely recommend!

David Hobson, General Manager at The George Hotel, responded to this review
Thanks for the kind words about our team here I will pass them on. Safe travels Dave and team George

"very pleasant stay"

"Old-fashioned hotel in good position"

SPAN_Edgbaston, Birmingham UK 24/05/2021

If you like an olde worlde feel, this is the place for you. My partner liked it more than me (which was a good job, since it was a birthday present from me!). A large rambling very old building right in the centre of town and a few minutes' walk from the castle ruins and station. Vertigo-inducing carpet of green and red tartan overlaid with mad curlicues, dark panelling and furniture, stairs sloping away from walls, creaking floorboards. No lift - we were on top floor, so six flights of stairs up. Staff mainly young, very pleasant, helpful and eager to please. No buffet during the pandemic, so individual packets of cereals and “orange juice” (actually juice drink). Cooked breakfast good, but no salmon for eggs Benedict on two of the three days we stayed. Despite a quite busy noisy cobbled road outside, quiet at night Bathroom was fairly modern and better when we found out the switch above the door to turn on the heated towel rail. The bathroom door didn't fit and on the second morning even at full heat setting the shower was tepid at best. The toilet flush handle became disconnected - one advantage of old-fashioned fittings is that we could easily remove the lid of the cistern to reconnect. Good comfortable bed. No decaf coffee in the room (not unusual). We returned one evening at 9.02pm to find the car park gates shut with a number to ring to get them opened There was a fire escape map on the back of the room door, but the “you are here” sticker indicated another room! The room next to ours was fumigated against COVID after the occupants checked out, which was comforting. There were sanitising gel dispensers by all entrances and elsewhere and spare disposable masks available. Overall, as we got a discounted B&B rate, it was pretty good value. However, if we had paid the full rate as quoted on the hotel's website, I would have felt differently.

"Afternoon Late Lunch"

vanessacoombes, Warrington, United Kingdom 23/05/2021

Called in at The George Hotel in a bit of a hurry before heading home from a day out walking. Sat outside at the front of the hotel as we had our dog with us. Service was great and staff were very friendly, although we did have a short wait for drinks, the waiter was very apologetic and explained that they were a little short staffed. The food arrived quickly and far outweighed our expectations it was excellent although soon went cold but probably due to the weather outside. I would definitely eat here again if we were back in Penrith.

"Great Stay with Brilliant Service"

User 01/05/2021

Hotel was warm and welcoming despite current Covid restrictions. Welcome was excellent and we where allowed to access our rooms early ahead of check-in time. Rooms where excellent as was the Front of House staff who were friendly and very professional. Room Service was efficient and the food was as always excellent. Waiters and waitresses where very friendly and made sure our stay was as pleasant as possible under Covid. Breakfast and check out where also very good. The staff, especially Moses on the front desk definitely went the extra mile or us as customers. We had a disabled young adult with us and he had no problems getting around the hotel. A chairlift is available for the stairs to the upper floor. We will definitely be returning to the George when we are back in this area. For drivers, secure parking is available behind the Hotel. Gates are locked at night and there is an access barrier.

User 26/04/2021

Lovely pub and hotel at first glance. Visited quite a while back, food was quite cold when it came out, spoke to staff member laura to be told that's how it was meant to be. Basically we ate it because the chef wasn't prepared to do anything about it. Shame really as i really would of really liked to stay again.

"Heart of Penrith"

centreofholistic2019, Great Dunmow, United Kingdom 03/02/2021

This is a beautiful hotel to stay in the heart of Penrith. The staff is always professional and above all friendly. Large clean rooms. It is local to shopping and food. I have stayed her twice now as I am moving to Penrith. It will be a great place to refer to family and friends when they visit.

"Central Location"

User 31/10/2020

Staff were friendly and helpful. The hotel was clean and followed the current guidelines to keep everyone safe. The location of the hotel is perfect for accessing the town centre shops and amenities. It is also a great base for exploring further afield. Would stay again.

"Visit to the Lake District"

ianwelsh2020, West Midlands, United Kingdom 29/10/2020

Stayed at the hotel for 2 nights in September using a wowcher offer. Could have docked points as the hotel doesn't have a lift and we were on the top floor plus no toilet rolls (I always like one in the loo) and the shower temperature was difficult to control. However what was outstanding were the staff and the food. Absolutely superb evening meal and lovely breakfast. A trip back in time for me as I realized I was there for a pint on the way to Blackpool some 60 odd years ago.

"Two Night Break"

mandpad, Durham, United Kingdom 28/10/2020

Have just returned after a very enjoyable break in Cumbria. Hotel is very traditional, very clean and comfortable. The breakfast was very good and we ate in the restaurant in the evening on our first night which was also very enjoyable. The staff were very pleasant and helpful. We would definitely return to this hotel and would recommend it.

"Mixed opinion "

Claire1802, Bolton, United Kingdom 17/10/2020

This is a traditional hotel in the centre of Penrith. I booked through a Groupon voucher for 1 night but decided we'd like to stay for 2 to explore the area. I contacted the hotel to book an extra night with no problem, they even offered it at the same Groupon price to be paid direct to them. My daughter decided to join us for one night and when adding her on to my booking they offered the same price again. Our room was large, clean but had a musky smell and quite worn in places, this wasn't one of the refurbished rooms. It was also quite cold, however there was an extra plug in electric heater which did the trick, there was no hot water through the tap or shower just bearable at lukewarm. On check-in we wasn't informed of anything but did receive a email. I asked could we have a table for 4 for breakfast on the 2nd morning. The first morning the waiter was so kind and friendly, nothing was too much trouble. However the 2nd morning we were greeted by a waitress/matron who was very stern, I asked for our table for 4 where we were directed to the far corner, which was in a draft and made our breakfast and drinks cold very quick. I asked if I could have some cheese in my scrambled egg with a stern “NO” I was quite taken aback. No manners at all and treated quite differently from the previous morning where nothing seemed to be much trouble When my daughter checked in everything was explained to her, she was asked to pay £145, her room was clean and quite small but the bathroom had been refurbished. We had a drink in Dappers bar with a roaring fire and reasonably priced for a hotel. The bartender was very pleasant too. We booked a meal at the lounge the first night and salsa the second - both worth a visit. On checking out we were asked to pay our bill for our extra night. I explained we'd already paid £145, but this was for my daughters room, they'd charged her the ? normal rate and nobody had communicated that we'd been offered a discounted price for the 2 extra nights. Surely this should of been documented on our booking. To be honest I'd of been shocked and disappointed if that was the normal rate for that room as it was quite pokey. I've stayed in a lot nicer hotel rooms around the lakes for less. It was also quite embarrassing trying to explain this at reception, to be told I don't know who took your booking, well it was the person that answered the phone on Monday 12th and Wednesday 14th about 8pm both times. But if you go on double rooms start at £89 per night so where did you get £145 per night from? Fortunately we did have a lovely couple of nights away but not sure if I'd stay here again.

Central location in a lovely little village. Very impressed with the safe measures put in place. Rooms were sealed for entry and spotless inside. We had a Club double on the third floor which looked like it had been recently decorated. Some reviews mention that there's no lift but it wasn't a problem climbing the stairs

This was our first visit to this hotel and our first experience of staying in a hotel in these strange times. No need to worry. From check-in to checkout all was smooth. We booked direct with the hotel on a deal to include a night's stay, evening meal a bottle of prosecco in the room followed by breakfast the next morning. Room - clean and comfortable. Evening Meal - Tortilla chips for 2 followed by a steak and salmon, both cooked beautifully. Breakfast the next morning was good. Nicely cooked, not greasy and plentiful. All in all a good stay.

"Wonderful few days!"

Samantha B, London, United Kingdom 23/09/2020

What a fantastic time we had, our wedding got cancelled so we treated ourselves to a few days away in the lakes. A room upgrade to a feature room and chocolates and a card greeted us - what a fabulous surprise, thank you! Room was super spacious and newly decorated with an impressive bathroom. All staff very smiley and chatty without being overbearing and nothing was too much trouble, shout out to the lovely cleaner lady who provided fresh towels and blankets with super speed and a smile. Only small issue was lack of hot water in shower one morning but I had a hot bath instead! Covid precautions made us feel safe and for the money paid for 3 nights, the excellent value means we will definitely be returning in December.

Thanks a lot Samantha for taking the time to write that lovely review. Emma is a bit of a star in housekeeping. Hope to see you again soon. Stay safe. Dave and team George

Extremely nice good humoured staff always make your stay a pleasure. Comfy bed and adjoining sitting room were very good and the bathroom was a decent size.we appreciated the spaciousness as my husband is 6ft 7 in his boots ! Excellent breakfast and evening meal.

"Lovely Hotel"

Eddie730, County Durham, United Kingdom 08/09/2020

This is a calm, happy and lovely hotel in the centre of Penrith - an ideal base for spending time visiting the area, or as an overnight staying enroute somewhere. Hotel staff are attentive, well trained and friendly. I'm very impressed with the COVID SECURITY - there are plenty of hand sanitizer stations, the rooms have everything organized and if you are here for more than 1 night and need housekeeping - then there is a protocol in place for that. If you have limited mobility, please note there is no lift to the upper floors. We're on a DBB package with proceseco deal and I have to say we were stunned by the quality of the evening meal. It was delicious...but a HUGE portion. Nothing is too much hassle for the staff - we loved our stay, we were able to book another night. If you are glued to your phone, be aware that the free secure WiFi doesn't stretch everywhere in this old and rambling hotel.

David Hobson, General Manager at The George Hotel, responded to this review
Thanks for that super review Eddie. We have put a lot of work in preparing the hotel to reach an as safe as possible environment. Thank you for picking up on that. I love hearing that the team here are friendly and taking care of our guests. I will be sure to pass on your comments to our team. We are in the process of improving our WiFi so hopefully it will be better for your next visit. There are a couple of 'grey' areas. Thanks again and I hope you can revisit soon. Dave and team George.

"Amazing food!"

Alicia_lakes, United Kingdom 07/09/2020

We visited the George Hotel twice over the weekend and enjoyed the food very much. We had steak and a chicken burger and steak and ale pie on the first visit and it was so good we decided to come back for Sunday lunch. We had roast beef with all the trimmings and sticky toffee pudding. It was absolutely delicious. Highly recommended.

David Hobson, General Manager at The George Hotel, responded to this review
That is an awesome review! I shall pass on those fantastic to our team. Sunday roast has come on leaps and bounds with improved cuts of meat and cooking techniques. Thanks for picking that out. I hope you can return again soon. Dave and team George

491cruisequeen, Skipton, United Kingdom 23/08/2020

what started out as an adventure we travelled from Skipton others from Scotland and Lancaster excited to see family and friends for the first time in 6 months we stayed in room 42 which was on the top floor 4 flights up (no lifts) standard room clean and tidy but very stuffy luckily there was a fan in every bedroom we tried to open the windows but as the hotel in on a main cobbled street it was too noisy ! others in rooms 6&7 first floor room 7 is a suite with separate bedroom very nice till you notice the paint peeling off the bedroom door . I would say the staff were very nice but when it came to the food not so good Pate starter the butter was solid had to chip it out to get to the pate , next I had gin and lime salmon which was a strip of steamed salmon with roasties piled on top with slices of lime and brocolli stems all of which were luke warm no hint of gin on this dish then there was breakfast ordered eggs royale which I sent back as it was cold another one was brought that was cold too apologies from the waiter no one came to say we are sorry we will knock it off the bill as i had no breakfast there were 2 full monty breakfasts and smoked salmon and scrambled eggs s were luke warm and breakfasts were very greasy so either the chef was having a bad day or his oven was off so overall very disappointing especially when it was a special celebration you don't like to make a fuss and spoil the night but I know my brother paid a lot of money for this and I know he just wanted everyone to have a good time and because of the company we were in at least we managed to do that but if you go to this hotel go room only as there are plenty of eating places in Penrith .

"Amazing Food"

User 18/08/2020

"Disappointing Dinner"

ilovefood19995, Oxford, United Kingdom 15/08/2020

We had quite high expectations for this meal, as, visually, the property was very lovely and interesting. We booked a table for dinner at about 8.30pm and were greeted nicely when we arrived. The waitress we had was really lovely and took our orders - everything was going well. We ordered halloumi fries for a shared starter and they were amazing! So our expectations for the rest of the meal were quite high and we were excited! Unfortunately, the rest of the meal was just... quite poor... it felt like there was no attention to quality or customer service at all. I ordered my steak to be medium rare and it arrived extremely rare/barely cooked on the inside, but also super dry. The chips were the only part of the meal I liked. Furthermore, both our meals came with corn, which was bone-dry and basically like eating cardboard my partner said. It seemed like it had been cooked a while ago and then just maybe heated up... We overheard the table next to us make the same comments. I ordered peppercorn sauce with my meal which did not come either. My partner ordered a grilled chicken burger which he said had no flavour and was extremely dry. Overall it was just a super disappointing meal and evening. As well as this, although the waiters were friendly, they barely assisted us or asked us if our meals were okay etc. If I had the chance to comment on my steak and request it to be cooked a little bit more I would have... however, we didn't really have the chance to complain, because none of the staff were really around to ask unless we went up to them and tapped them on the shoulder, which is poor service. We're not sure if it's because it was near the end of the day, or whether it's because we were taking part in the 'eat out to help out' scheme, which meant the staff and food weren't great because we were paying less (?? not sure). We aren't sure, but definitely don't think either of those warrant such poor quality food and service. It could have just been a fluke but we will definitely will not be returning. A huge shame.

David Hobson, General Manager at The George Hotel, responded to this review
Thanks Ilovefood for taking the time to leave us a review. I am pleased you were welcomed and greeted in a nice way and thanks for the compliments on the starters. I do apologise for not enjoying your overall experience with us. The chicken breast in the burgers are marinaded by our kitchen brigade with parsley, rosemary, coriander and toasted fennel, and I can't understand how a rare steak is dry. I am also shocked that you did not receive the service you expected as our team is amazing, friendly and extremely attentive. The eat out to help out scheme has not made any difference to the quality, portion size or staffing levels of our food experience as we claim the discounted 50% back from HMRC as do any businesses taking part. I would like the chance to welcome you back. If you feel you can return please call me directly on 01768 862696 so I can organise your visit personally. Dave and team George

"Lunch visit in outdoor area"

User 13/08/2020

We stopped by the restaurant today as we had such a great experience when we visited 5 years ago. Due to Covid, we sat outside and ordered drinks from the bar inside. There was a screen in front of the bar so they appeared to be very Covid safe, for this reason we decided to stay for Lunch. The food menu is limited but I'm not sure if we was just given the bar menu only, as we remember much more options from when we visited previously. Some staff approached our table to take our order with PPE however sadly when our food orders were taken, drinks delivered and food delivered, no PPE was used so we felt a little exposed. I think the least the staff should be wearing is a visor or face covering. We ordered a steak (rare) and Pie. Disappointingly, the steak was medium (no pink) and the pastry was soggy. Our meals were served with French fry freezer style chips.. for a good quality hotel and the price of the meal we expected a little better quality and service.

David Hobson, General Manager at The George Hotel, responded to this review
Thanks Alisajaynee for taking the time to leave a review. The team at the George wear face masks with two exceptions due to a medical condition, which I believe was explained to you at the time. We have spent thousands of pounds on PPE which include visors, masks, ozone machine, screens and sanitiser stations and I have spent many hours writing and rewriting risk assessments and SOP's. All followed up with team training. Then we hired a private environmental health officer to go through our procedures with us and help us improve. Then we were awarded the QIT 'safe clean and legal' certificate for our procedures to minimise the risk of covid-19. I see from ALL your previous reviews that you have been swiping at hospitality businesses in spite of their very well documented struggles. Apologies for you not enjoying your meals however I feel that you would not have been positive about them if they were exceptional. Wishing you all the best and safe travels. Dave

"Overnight Stay"

Graham0072015, Sutton, United Kingdom 12/08/2020

The George is in the centre of Penrith which is a pleasant and traditional market town. The hotel is "traditional style"in nature with interesting features. Like everyone they were endeavouring to cope with Covid 19 and doing pretty well. Staff were helpful. I had a single room which was perfectly adequate in all respects. Dinner was pretty good. If I had one disappointment it was the cooked breakfast which was all overcooked and not very appetising. If arriving by car, make sure you get the postcode of the car park, in advance, as the entrance is round the one way system.

"40th wedding "

John S, Wolsingham, United Kingdom 11/08/2020

Hotel nice staff very good and friendly food good the only fault we had was the long hairs on the table and on the bathroom floor in these days of covid 19 it was not very good the room had been cleaned but despite that we enjoyed our stay and would go back

David Hobson, General Manager at The George Hotel, responded to this review
Thanks John for the good review. If I can extend my apologies for the hair found and I can assure you it has been picked up with our housekeeping team. The George has taken extensive precautions including a comprehensive risk assessment and SOP's and I'm sure you saw first hand the signs, multiple sanitisation points, staff wearing masks and other measures taken. I look forward to welcoming you back for another stay and thanks again for the review and the compliments toward our super team. Best wishes for your future travels. Dave and team George

"Excellent afternoon tea!"

claire30, Wilmslow, United Kingdom 06/08/2020

It's our wedding anniversary and we booked afternoon tea at the George Hotel and it was beautiful, really fresh sandwiches cheese savoury, smoked salmon and very thick sliced ham with a tomato chutney! Then so many cakes, macarons, biscuits. Lovely drinks too soya milk latte and soft drink for my husband as not fans of traditional tea and coffee. Really excellent and well worth a visit, Penrith is an ex-expected delight of a town to visit too! Great memories and thank you very attentive staff and they let us bring our little pooch in too xxx

Stayed here for 2 days and was very pleased with the hotel, all the staff was very friendly and the place was immaculate. Patricia L, Stockton-on-Tees, United Kingdom 12/03/2020

We have stayed many times before. We visited this time for my birthday. We had a lovely room(feature) and were staying DB&B. We were early arriving so had a bite to eat for lunch and then our room was ready. The room was lovely and bright and spacious. Evening meal was wonderful with plenty of choice, all three courses were well presented an tasty. The wine was good.Breakfast was good with plenty of choice. We travelled to Carlisle as it is quite close. Our second evening meal was very good again. All the staff are very friendly and efficient especially Ariadne(I think ) made our stay enjoyable. Both check-in and check-out was quick and effortless.

"5 Star. Just as you promised."

Pete S, Penrith, United Kingdom 05/03/2020

Dave and the team promised that my next visit would be worth more than the 4 star I gave on our last vist, and they proved it. Excellent service, food outstanding..highly recommend Haloumi Chips as a starter. As for the fish & chips, Steak pie and Burger ....prefect! Please forgive my son for not finishing, his promise to the George is to watch what he eats before coming to you.. My summery ? Well priced, excellent and attentive service, good sized potions in a beautiful and comfortable location. Thank you

"Good old fashioned hospitality"

DavyPandhisTea, Edinburgh, United Kingdom 04/03/2020

Great hotel in a central location with very friendly and helpful staff. The hotel is clean and tidy with generous sized rooms and en-suites. The hotel has open fires in all public rooms which is quite comforting on a winters night. The bar and restaurant is really nice although the winter restaurant menu is a bit limited especially if you stay a couple of nights. I have stayed here in the summer months and the menu is extended greatly. The food though is of high quality and well presented.

dave061081, General Manager at The George Hotel, responded to this review
Thanks for that great review. If the restaurant menu becomes too limited on a stay longer than a night please feel free to pick from our bar menu which is of good standard also. We're quite flexible with what you choose to eat and where and are of the opinion that it makes no difference to our service. Look forward to your next stay Best wishes Dave and team George

"Evening drinks"

sonofgod6969, Lake District, United Kingdom 01/03/2020

Popped into the George for after dinner drinks, normally get served after sitting down but people walked past but never came to take our order. Went to the bar and asked for a Bloody Mary but was told I couldn't have one!? Any reason why? Don't have the ingredients! Basic bar staples, unforgivable for a hotel. Come on guys make an effort. It's in excusable for any bar to not have these things and even worse for a hotel. Really shoddy, usual service which is a USP lacking, bit of a shame!

dave061081, General Manager at The George Hotel, responded to this review
Hello Sonofgod 69 Not sure why we wouldn't be able to serve a bloody mary as we ALWAYS have these ingredients in stock. I can only apologise and be assured that I have followed this matter up with the team. Please do try us again and give us a chance to turn your opinion around. Best wishes Dave and team George

"90th Birthday Afternoon Tea"

PaulF610, Windermere, United Kingdom 18/02/2020

Our family of eight, including 90 year old mother, enjoyed a splendid high tea in the bay window of The George on Sunday 16 February. Under the friendly, watchful eye of John Dawes, who at short-notice also arranged a gluten free option due to an additional guest, we tucked into a delightful range of sandwiches, scones, cakes, macaroons, shortbread, lemon tartlets, summer fruits, tea and more. Spot on! Our thanks to John Dawes and the team at The George for a perfect afternoon, full of memories for my mother – who first met my father there nearly 70 years ago.

Thank you so much for leaving such a great review. John is an absolute legend in these parts and has customer service and being a generally all round nice guy built in. Happy birthday to your mother once again from all of us here at the George. Best wishes Dave and team George

"Very good. "

User 18/02/2020

We were visiting Penrith and called into the George Hotel for a late breakfast. Service was prompt despite the hotel being very busy. We went for the full breakfast which came with juice and tea or coffee. It was excellent and good value and quality. We would definitely return again when visiting Penrith.

"Service "

User 17/02/2020

We popped in for lunch 2 times in a row , and been sat at least 10/15 minutes and been ignored by staff , When others have come through the door and been served immediately..both time we left and went elsewhere. We are local and have had works Christmas party there and Sunday lunch on other occasions. Won't be going back..

"Excellent value for money"

pointless000, Liverpool, United Kingdom 16/02/2020

The hotel is not the most up to date, but this is what makes it a charming place to stay. If you want the big hotel with spa etc this is not the place for you. If you want a hotel that has charm, friendly staff and unbelievable food this is the one. As for value for money, I would have paid the money for just the evening meal, getting the overnight stay and breakfast is a bonus.

Booked a groupon for a night with 3 course dinner, breakfast and late check out . Had a wonderful stay , staff lovely ( very accomodating for my 10 year olds meal choices at dinner) and made us feel very welcome. The room was exquisite. Expected a small double but walked into a suite i think ! 2 tellys so no arguing needed :-). Booking again for May and wont forget about the prosecco this time ! Thank yous

"Absolutely Abysmal food, service and atmosphere - An utter dissapointment"

User 31/01/2020

I visited the George Hotel recently with family between Christmas and New Year. Despite the various pretensions of the place, we were treated to a really poor standard of service and food. It's a long time since I have seen such a paltry menu, only offering the likes of Cumberland Sausage, Fish and Chips, and other unimaginative dishes. Despite being the only people eating in the bar on this particular evening, we were completely ignored by bar staff upon arrival, nothing was explained to our group and had to go up to the bar multiple time to place drinks orders, no table service was offered despite the quietness of the day and reputation of the place. We eventually had to walk over to the bar to ask if somebody would come and take our food order. The food itself was a borderline disgrace. How they can charge good money for poorly reheated main courses is beyond my comprehension, but perhaps that is increasingly the world we live in. I won't hurry to set foot in this place again.

dave061081, General Manager at The George Hotel, responded to this review
Hello benjaminbill770, Not sure if this is posted to the wrong business because..... 1) We do not have cumberland sausage on the menu. 2)The George is always busy between xmas and new year. 3) The menu is extensive not 'paltry' ie 19 main courses available. A vegan and gluten free menu is also available. If it is in the right place I can only apologise that you didn't enjoy your experience with us and assure you that our food offering is well received and has gone from strength to strength over the last few years as reviews would suggest. Thanks again Dave and team George

"Nice warm open fires, whilst we stop for a drink."

User 21/01/2020

The open fires flicker warming us as we sip our drinks in the pleasant Hotel bar. Definately a place we may like to come back too some day. The menu looked very inviting though we didn't have time on this trip.

"Pleasant hotel"

mn99, Manchester, United Kingdom 12/01/2020

Stayed for a night mid-week on business - glad I stayed here. It had a cosy feel - the staff were all very helpful and friendly. Better than many hotels I've stayed at. I arrived late but they still had hot toasties available for room service despite the late hour which was actually very tasty. Breakfast was very nice too. I had a front facing room and no noise at all. Room and bed comfortable - I slept very well. Would definitely stay again. Great value.

"Nice, homely hotel"

Photomaid, darlington 08/01/2020

We visited as part of a groupon deal. On arrival staff very friendly . Was allocated room 4 but there were problems with the hot water & we were moved to room 12. Both rooms were very nice & the bed was comfy & big. The bathroom was lovely & the whole hotel is in an amazing building. We had Sunday dinner & I wasn't too impressed with the food.My lamb rump was pink so swapped with my husband who ordered beef but that was tough & not too tasty. The starter as well I did not rate we had very little choice & had the chicken liver pate. It was cold & reminded me of the cheapest supermarket variety. Surely the chef could show a lot more imagination . I did enjoy my pudding of treacle sponge . The breakfast was once again just ok. A limited range of fruit & cereals. All food was quick to come out . Had a drink in the bar & the prices were reasonable.I did enjoy my stay & can't moan for what I paid . The staff are great & smile a lot but if the food was better I would happily come back .

dave061081, General Manager at The George Hotel, responded to this review
Thanks for taking the time to leave a review and for illustrating several good points at the George. I am a little dissapointed and confused with your comments about your meals; The lamb rump is a great cut of meat and is served pink, however should a guest want it to be well done or overcooked we would happily cook it longer for it for you. I have yet to see chicken liver pate served warm. We have recently changed our cut of beef used for Sunday lunches and it is now the melt in your mouth type. I do hope you will return. In the centre of town, easy access to lakes Good ambience ,food and service, used locally for morning coffee, lunch etc. An older hotel with history, a little gem. It does have event nights but they don't seem to interfere with residents. Some noise experienced briefly from the street weekends in front rooms. Locals going home!, will definitely stay again.

We stayed two nights in this lovely hotel , the ground floor was beautifully and tastefully decorated for Xmas . Reception staff were very welcoming . We were given a stunning bedroom with a four poster bed , A lounge area with settee . Beautiful bathroom with fluffy white towels . Welcome tray Evening meal was delicious and so was breakfast. Penrith a lovely little town to visit, good selection of shops and cafes . Our bedroom was at the front of the hotel and as it is a busy street you do hear noise but it didn't spoil our stay. Two tiny criticisms , the water was only warm coming through the shower and the pillow cases were polyester cotton mix , not pure cotton so not cool to sleep on . Would definitely return to this hotel.

Rooms could do with upgrades esp bathrooms public areas excellent The bar could do with being modernised so that more guests would use it all on all a nice stay and value for money Penrith it's self has suffered in the high street with to many vacant shops

"Fantastic Hotel"

User 03/12/2019

We have stayed at The George Hotel on numerous occasions and have always had a fantastic time. The food is absolutely superb. I suppose that the hotel could be judged by some to be a bit dated, but we love the warm, cosy atmosphere there. All of the staff are brilliant - friendly, helpful and nothing is a trouble to them. The management are really great and genuinely care about the guests. We are already looking forward to our next visit. Apparently the hotel is going to be extended and updated in the near future - but PLEASE DO NOT SPOIL the atmosphere of the place and make sure that you hang on to the current members of staff because they really do make the place such an enjoyable and welcoming place to visit.

"Reassuringly friendly."

Strachanna2013, Banchory, United Kingdom 26/11/2019

We've stayed overnight at The George a few times over the past three months and it's one of those cosy, familiar sort of places filled with locals, kids and dogs popping in to meet friends over coffee or meals as the location is so central. Staff are lovely and welcoming. The most difficult bit is trying to find a parking space in the hotel car park and last week we were reduced to parking next to some rather dodgy scaffolding and hoping that the workman weren't starting at 7a.m.! Finding the hotel itself is the first challenge for visitors...... The restaurant meal at night was from their set Christmas menu, somewhat limited in choice but all very tasty and good sized portions, accompanied by a very acceptable Shiraz, which was well priced at £18. But, as we found out later, it is possible to order from the bar menu and eat in the restaurant, which looked lovely with all the Christmas decorations and subtle lighting...a very pleasant dining room. All the hotel looked really festive, especially their wonderful staircase in the foyer with entwined fake fir branches and fairy lights, plus enough decorated Christmas trees around to stock a shop. All OTT and perfectly splendid! Our bedroom [room 9] was on the side, overlooking a very scruffy, unloved yard which I immediately shut out with the heavy curtains. The decor looked quite recent and was tastefully done with good quality furnishings in toning colours. En suite was a small, but perfectly adequate, bathroom with a bath, shower and toiletries. Breakfast was hearty and delicious, but the coffee was incredibly strong. Afterwards, my husband had an appointment in Penrith, but the man on reception said that it was no problem to have a midday checkout and so, after an hour around Penrith, I was packed and ready to sit downstairs in the foyer. A cleaner working in the room next to ours very kindly took my suitcase downstairs and I parked myself in the wide window seat with a pot of tea and the daily papers until my husband returned. It was all very relaxed with folk coming and going, plus pleasant chats, and Penrith itself must be one of the friendliest places in the North! Our B&B + dinner at the discounted rate was £124 for the two of us, which we thought was reasonable and, as always, we felt very relaxed after our stay, even it was just an overnight on the way back to Scotland.

"Early evening drinks "

sonofgod6969, Lake District, United Kingdom 22/11/2019

Called in at the George for drinks after a family meal nearby. They have prepared for Christmas fantastically! At least 10 Xmas trees and decorations everywhere! Good service you can just walk in,sit down and someone will come and take your order. Old fashioned service that is sadly lacking at other establishments, something's don't need to be changed they are there for a reason! Although service is great the George is not a stuffy and stuck up place. An old fashioned hotel with quality service but there to serve the local community and quite a hub in that respect!

dave061081, General Manager at The George Hotel, responded to this review
Thanks for that amazing review. Yes we have gone to town on the decs this year. Next year we are aiming to do some work on the outside of the building so we will be even more festive. We love Christmas!!!!!!! thanks again, until next time... Dave and team George

"Old world charm"

User 20/11/2019

The George has an excellent location, being right in the centre of Penrith. It has its own car park at the rear but it's not that large so try and get in there early. The hotel is old but has lots of charm. The room we had was large, very clean and comfortable. Very helpful and friendly staff.

"Very disappointing"

pennine65wanderer, Penrith, United Kingdom 18/11/2019

I visited this hotel today for coffee & scones as a special treat. How very disappointed I was. I ordered two cafetières of coffee and two fruit scones. I struggled to get one and a half cups of coffee out of each cafetière. Considering the price charged I expected at least two cups from each. The scones cut and tasted as if they were yesterday's baking. They were dry and not very nice. I mentioned this to a friend who was a regular customer of this hotel and he told me that the quality of the scones was the reason he stopped visiting. As the main hotel in the town I think their standards are very poor. I will not be going back. There are better establishments in town and a great deal cheaper.

dave061081, General Manager at The George Hotel, responded to this review
Thanks for taking the time to leave us a review, I apologise you did not enjoy your visit, and I'm not sure what has gone wrong with the scones as they are freshly made every morning. Looking at previous reviews you have left totalling 13 there is just one 5 star review and five 1 star reviews, even so we do strive to improve our offering and will take your points into consideration. I will keep close tabs on the quality of our fresh scones and I do hope you can return one day to allow us to make it up to you. sincerely Dave and team George

"Unique experience"

Friendly, comfortable, welcoming, very enjoyable. This is the third year of staying in The George Hotel. Cannot fault the service and staff. My husband and I travel around Britain quite a lot and stay in wonderful hotels but this place has a special warm inviting feeling that makes us want to return.

Paul A, South Shields, England, United Kingdom 17/11/2019

Is terrible. Room, service and food excellent. But the parking area is impossible to find being in under an archway behind the hotel and is tiny when you do. Finding a space means waiting some time. However can't fault anything else.

Thanks for the great review barring your parking experience. You must have landed at a very busy time. Hope to see you again Dave and team George

RMcKP, Penrith, United Kingdom 11/11/2019

What a fabulous welcome we received for a special birthday party. Fiona and the team made the party evening so special. Many guests stayed overnight in comfortable beds and had an amazing choice of well prepared and presented breakfasts. I loved staying in this lovely hotel so central in Penrith. A real gem

"Disappointing "

421karenm, Carlisle, United Kingdom 10/11/2019

We stayed in a twin room at the back of the hotel. Dingy and cold. Furniture in poor condition. Carpet very stained and dirty. Strange stale smell in the room. Shower had black mould. Breakfast very fatty and disappointing. The hotel areas, particularly the corridors need updating.

User 08/11/2019

This hotel has so much potential (given location) and I understand some rooms may have been modernised but but our room and common areas were a though back to the 1970's; really sweets in many ways. To be honest it needs demolishing and re built. Nice staff

"Walking weekend I'm the lakes"

markfM3795AT, Birmingham, United Kingdom 05/11/2019

Pleasant old travelers rest, obviously seen better days but still a magnificent building. Beds too soft for me and pillows lumpy so not the best nights sleep. However the dinner bed and breakfast package offered real value for money and the food was very good, particularly the breakfasts. Staff very friendly and nothing was too much trouble. Had a really good time with “the lads” but probably wouldn't bring my wife! Overall good value for money but not as luxurious as I would have liked. Beware bar prices, at £4.80 a pint it's more expensive than most city centers!

dave061081, General Manager at The George Hotel, responded to this review
Thanks Mark, It would be great if you could email me on and let me know which room you were in so we can change the pillows. Our team cannot identify which room it could be. Thanks for the compliments regarding the team here and the food. I will pass them on. The bar prices are not high Carlsberg is £3.60 a pint! We are in line with the traditional pub down the street regarding beer prices. We do stock Estrella which is a premium beer and is priced accordingly at £4.80 I guess thats where the price came from. I hope you can return and because we have a tiered system in terms of room luxury perhaps you could bring the wife and stay in much more luxurious surrounds. Thanks again Dave and team George

"Good all round stay"

PeterLanky, Wigan, United Kingdom 30/10/2019

The attraction of this hotel is it's uniqueness rather than luxury. The staff was very helpful in carrying my wheelchair up and down stairs numerous times and were always polite and courteous in the lounge and dining areas. A further attraction is being able to sit in the comfortable lounge after breakfast and peruse the newspapers. Location is perfect, being in the centre of town as soon as you step out of the door. Only really spoiled for me by the number of dogs.

"Great visit"

Chrisadamson1, Newcastle, United Kingdom 28/10/2019

My wife and I stayed for two nights and it happened to be the weekend the droving event was on. Great hotel with many historic features, staff are very friendly and the hotel room was lovely and warm and very very clean. Food in the restaurant was very nice and plenty little seating areas around the lobby to sit and relax with a drink or two. Our room overlooked the inner part of the hotel and could have done with a larger tv, (squeaky floorboards as well so I hope no one was in a room below us, but as mentioned a very historic hotel) Overall a great place and we will certainly be booking again. Thank you for making our stay a memorable one.

"Super location"

David W, Durham, United Kingdom 25/10/2019

Only stayed here for one night but found the hotel, although old, very clean and comfortable. It is located right in the centre of Penrith and all amenities are within walking distance. There isn't a lift but as soon as the helpful man on reception noticed that my wife had some walking difficulties he immediately changed our 3rd floor room to one on the first floor, which can be reached by stair lift. The room itself was large and well equipped. It had a large bathroom with shower and full size bath and a very comfortable king size bed. We didn't eat at the hotel so can't comment on the food.

Having had a nice stay at The George. It was completely ruined by the duty manager at the end of our stay. I was humiliated, upset and very very shocked by his attitude towards me. "Great old, traditional hotel - made special by superb staff"

mirandayork, york 18/10/2019

We'd booked one night here (attending a funeral in my husband's home town). Check in was quick and efficient and extremely friendly. After checking our room we asked about availability for a second night & were offered a good rate. We had a standard room which was more than good enough. Spotlessly clean, comfortable, good en suite bathroom (we've had better showers but it's a very old building). It did have a heated towel rail which many much newer places lack. Free WiFi throughout, tea/coffee making facilities in the room and toiletries in the bathroom. Television with freeview channels. From our room we had a view over the square - lots of reminiscing for my husband. The only downside for us was that we were on the third floor and there are no lifts. I'm sure it did us good! When we return we'll ask for a room on a lower floor though. We didn't have breakfast on the first morning but as we were offered a good inclusive rate for the second night we decided we would for the next morning. Good decision. Freshly cooked and very tasty. Plenty of choice of fresh fruit + croissants, pains au chocolat etc - sadly we were too full to try these. Throughout our stay we were very impressed with every member of staff. This hotel has either been exceedingly lucky, or, more likely, has a superb staff trainer. This hotel is in the centre of the town so very handy for shops, cafes and restaurants. Free parking at the rear of the hotel. It's dog friendly too which is quite common in the Lake District. There is disabled access into the ground floor of the hotel from the car park and a stair lift to the first floor ballroom. As far as I'm aware there are no accessible bedrooms. It seems to be a popular venue for morning coffee and afternoon teas and various events are held here. Plenty of seating for coffees etc plus a separate bar. At 10.30 on Friday morning the lounge area was busy and it felt like a good atmosphere . The prices in the restaurant look reasonable.

"Great stay at The George Hotel, Penrith"

richardtanycoed, Wales 14/10/2019

Stayed 3 nights on a business trip with a function aranged on my second night by the company I work for. A hotel full of character, great staff, rooms clean and comfortable with everything in full working order. Had to turn my central heatnig radiator off and open the window! Superb wifi connection in my room and throughout the hotel. Our function ran like clockwork and the buffet was first class. Easy 10-minute walk (with suitcase on wheels) from Penrith Station to a well-placed town centre location almost directy opposite Barclays Bank (and cash machine). Highly recommended

allisond693, Northwich, United Kingdom 09/10/2019

Stayed here for 2 nights DB&B, we had a lovely room with a separate living room. The room was clean, spacious and wonderful traditional decor. My partner had organised flowers, champagne and chocolates in the room as a surprise for my birthday, all excellent choices. The restaurant was elegant & food served was lovely & presented well. Can not fault this hotel. Apart from there being no lift, I'm on crutches, there was a stair lift but I felt like I was on show while using it.

"Lovely food in a lovely atmosphere"

User 08/10/2019

Called for a quick lunch, been before and never disappoints. Very quiet and tranquil lounge, with roaring fire (bit too warm today, but cannot fault). Service very quick and really friendly and attentive. Had a simple toastie, but very well presented and tasty. Good value. All in all, a very pleasant experience. Also with the benefit of free parking, aided by a code to be able to lift the car park barrier. Well worth a visit when in or passing Penrith.

"Lovely filling lunch"

Pete S, Penrith, United Kingdom 04/10/2019

Popped in for a spur of the moment spot of lunch. We weren't expecting much except high prices as punishment for not popping into one of your high street diners. How wrong could we have been ? Excellent and Curtious service, beautiful layout and very good food at a very good price.. We were treated like royalty and as locals, seriously regret not visiting before. Thank you for a wonderful lunch. I highly recommend the Fish.

"Excellent Stay"

Sile365, Alexandria, Virginia 02/10/2019

Lovely hotel with all amenities and certain meals included. The staff was helpful (directing me to a local market for gifts and carrying my WAY too heavy bag up the stairs, helping me figure out how to open my historic door). The lobby of the hotel appears to be a local gathering place with many folks just stopping in to enjoy the daily tea service. Wonderful decor and vibe. Would ove to spend a rainy day curled up in a cozy corner. Our lunch and breakfast were delicious. The usual English breakfast options were available: eggs, kippers, blood sausages, bacon, crumpets, etc. I do wish the English would learn to make GOOD coffee - alas you can't have everything!!! Within walking distance (three blocks) from the train station.

"A very pleasant stay."

tony667, London, United Kingdom 02/10/2019

We stayed here Sunday night. We arrived late as we had a drive from Belfast. The hotel kindly kept the kitchen open so we could have something to eat. The room we had was lovely and big. There was even a dog bed and bowls in the room as we were travelling with a dog. We were on a birthday break the card and chocolates from the hotel was a lovely touch. Overall a lovely clean hotel with nice rooms and nice staff. Would I stay again? YES.

"Worthwhile & Good Value"

User 01/10/2019

Good quality accommodation which represents excellent value for money. Set in a hotel with bags of character, the recent furniture & linen were well matched & incorporated into the rooms. Very content to stay again although won't be eating again as food was awful, h red nice the reduced score

Excellent Service, staff are pleasant and friendly. Catered for our Intimate wedding in August. We had an amazing day, food was great. We had the privilege to stay overnight. Room was fantastic and breakfast was excellent too. We are looking forward to visiting again soon.

"Excellent value"

roseandco, Dorset, United Kingdom 16/09/2019

Central to the town, secure free parking, friendly relaxed feel...what's not to like? The Victorian style to it, the wide staircase and carved wood belied the comfort of our room which was immaculately clean with (bliss!) two easy chairs as well as a desk, a decent shower, comfortable bed and plenty of pillows and cushions, bathrobes, fluffy towels etc etc. Also, extremely quiet so we slept like logs. We ate in the hotel bar that night which was standard pub food but the hotel experience was well above average. And they take dogs!

"In the heart of Penrith"

Thomas B, Jacksonville, FL 14/09/2019

Situated almost smack dab in the heart of Penrith the George rises up like a signpost for posh hotels of the past. Large staircases, woody lounges and lobbies are all squeezed in. The rooms, or at least ours, are relatively small but well equipped and comfy. The prices are certainly reasonable and there is safe free parking in a car park reachable through the back door. If you have difficulty climbing stairs it is not the best bet since there are no lifts, but you cannot beat the location. Right outside the door is great shopping and several really nice restaurants

"Enjoyable Friday and Saturday"

Bokkie1701, Kirkcaldy, United Kingdom 10/09/2019

Our friends booked us into The George Hotel for a weekend break. There was roadworks going on in the front of the hotel which made parking limited. We managed to get parked at the back area. We received a warm welcome at reception. We were given a room on the 4th floor. We explained my husband has COPD and cannot do to much stairs as there is no lift. Gladly we received a room on the first floor, room 9. The room was clean, updated and so was the bathroom. First hotel we've stayed at that has the same toiletries as the Queen Mary II. We had a few drinks in the Dapper Bar then our evening meal in the Restaurant. Food was freshly prepared and good size portions. Breakfast was good. Self help continental section and hot breakfast to order. All the staff was friendly and go out of their way to help you. The Hotel had alot of money spent on updating and refurbish. Location in the middle of the town. Park your car and just walk around. Highly recommended and we will go back.

dave061081, General Manager at The George Hotel, responded to this review
Thank you Bokkie for that wonderful review, I am pleased that you found our team to be warm and friendly. Thanks for your patience with the road works, I have been informed that it is a gas leak which should be all done and dusted within a day or so. Same toiletries as Queen Mary the II! Never knew that!! I hope if you return that we can impress suffiently to achieve a 5 star review. Until next time, Full steam ahead!! Dave and team George

"Perfectly placed for a nice stay"

Stewal, Rotherham, United Kingdom 08/09/2019

Really enjoyed our night in The George. Bang in the middle of Penrith it's great for a walk around the town. There were Road works right outside which made finding the rear car park a little difficult. But the staff at the hotel talked us thru and once parked up it was great stay. All staff in the hotel were very helpful We were on floor 3 which is a trek with bags and no lift. However the room was good and looked like it had been recently refurbished. The uneven sloping floors just added to the experience which in such an old building are an expected feature. We had dinner included in the rate and the restaurant was very busy. Always a good sign. Not a massive choice on the menu but all we ordered was excellent. A great venue for a stay in the region.

dave061081, General Manager at The George Hotel, responded to this review
Thanks Stewal for the 5 star review, We would usually offer assistance with your luggage and I apologise if this was not the case! (no pun intended). I am pleased you found the meal you had excellent. For future reference if you find the restaurant menu limited then there is absolutely no problem with one or both of you choosing something from the bar menu. Thanks again for the lovely comments about our team. I shall pass them on. Safe travels Dave and team George

"A Happy Stay"

Katharine186300, Winchester, United Kingdom 30/08/2019

I had to stay in Penrith for a couple of nights. and so looked on Trip Advisor. The George came up and I booked in. It is a downhill walk from the station.Cross the road at the station and go to the ruined castle on the opposite side. Walk down the hill and five minutes later you are at the George. Not realising how easy it was I got a taxi - cost £2.50.There is a decent parking area at the front of the hotel. The hotel is old and comfortable with Toby Jugs and plates round the walls. It has a big area in the front and a decent size bar at the back. The room was comfortable and the shower good. Food is generous and good. the staff are very friendly..

My wife and I called into the George Hotel for an evening meal on Sunday 11/08/20, we stood at reception for nearly 10 minutes two members of staff walked past us one twice while he had a phone to his ear, all he had to say was "can you give me a minute" or similar. At this point we left and went to the Lounge Hotel and Bar instead Not a happy couple

dave061081, General Manager at The George Hotel, responded to this review
Hi Bug, We were unfortunately short on staff on Sunday evening with a team member being off ill and no available cover. Our receptionist was helping with meal service. We do have two portable phone units at reception so the receptionist can take a call whilst doing tasks such as cashing tills etc. Thank you for making it sound like it was a personal call. A little unnecessary. I am pleased you were acknowledged in spite of the staff shortage, and I do sincerely apologise for your wait. Dave and team George

"Fabulous, friendly staff, great value, enclosed car park."

Tracey T, Cardiff, United Kingdom 20/08/2019

We were travelling on the M6 and needed an overnight stop. I looked on my phone and found The George and phoned them. A lovely lady gave me directions to the enclosed car park, ideal for our motorcycle. On arrival we were offered a dinner, B&B deal at an excellent price and given room 16 on the 1st floor. I was nervous as the building was old and the floors did creak but wow! what a room. The decor was modern and well designed, the bed was huge, the bathroom was large with separate bath and waterfall shower. The usual tv, tea tray and toiletries were of good quality. We ate in the restaurant and the 3 course meal was good value, loved the sticky toffee pudding. Full cooked breakfast was also good with an extra pot of tea brought and we took our time enjoying that. The staff were young, friendly, experienced and very efficient both on reception and in the restaurant. All I could have added to the room would have been air-con, but that's expensive, so a flat sheet would have been cooler than the thick duvet. The food was good, although the rump steak cooked rare was a little tough and deep fried onion rings with skin on fat chips a relic from the 1970's? Healthier options, e.g. new potatoes or salad would have been nice. Overall a really lovely overnight stop, I would definitely return.

"Brilliant nights sleep"

smiletravels, Maidenhead, United Kingdom 16/08/2019

What a quaint old fashioned hotel.. staff were lovely and very friendly and the room no.5 was nicely decorated with a modern bathroom.. so very quiet - it was wonderful Had dinner in the bar which wasn't up to much - fish pie which was rather bland and lacking in fish, and hubby had burger which he left not because it was bad but they put a relish on which was too sweet. Breakfast was very nice- vegetarian and full Cumbrian. Overall a nice old fashioned stopover

"Brilliant pit stop"

sammibmcg, Swindon, United Kingdom 14/08/2019

We stopped at The George for one night on our way to the Highlands, having booked pretty last minute. The first thing to mention is that it's in a brilliant location, and there's plenty of private parking. It's easy to find from the motorway and is very central to the town. The room was very comfortable, and the bathroom was huge! We even had robes in the wardrobe which was a nice touch and made us feel pampered after a long car journey. We arrived too late for dinner and ended up having breakfast in a lovely cafe, so can't comment on the food but I'm sure it was lovely!

Spotlessly clean, modern hotel in an old building. Lovely rooms, clean, presentable, modern & very comfortable beds. I love that you could still open the window to let in fresh air. Soft towels & hot bath

"A good nights sleep at an affordable price"

User 08/08/2019

Check-in was quick and efficient, the car park at the rear of the hotel, has an electric barrier, with a code to input when leaving. The room was clean, tidy and warm (three requisites for any hotel) The hotel had a nice cosy looking bar, and the hotel was ideal for exploring Penrith, with bars, restaurants, cinema, and takeaways, within walking distance.Overall I had a pleaseant experience and I am staying there again tonight, and I will find out if my pleasant last stay was a one off.

"If you like an antiquated bathing experience this is the place for you."

Northernmonkey68, Gillingham, United Kingdom 07/08/2019

We get that this building is very old BUT the facilities shouldn't be. We had NO hot water the whole 2 night stay ! When I approached reception ( twice ) I was told to just "run the taps for 15 minutes" so I did this in anticipation for a nice hot shower after a 7 hour drive. Well what I was greeted with was a cough/splutter from the shower head and a rumble of pipes followed by what I can only describe as lukewarm rain water so I began to wash only to find the water go from the temperature of a baby's bath water to water more suited to a pregnant penguin ( bloody freezing ) after a while I though ( sod this ) and gave up having a shower and when it came to having a shave I didn't fancy the facial complexion of looking like I'd shaved with a jagged broken bottle. So I boiled the kettle instead. I get that this is a very old hotel BUT surely your company are not still employing small children to stoke the obsolete steam powered boiler you must be using to heat the water system. You also need to employ taller room cleaners as anything above 6 ft off the floor had a liberal coating of dust.

""An overnight stay""

MaryElizabethBeds, Shefford, United Kingdom 06/08/2019

We had an overnight stay to break the journey to Scotland. A lovely old hotel in the high street. The room and the bathroom were extremely clean. We had a fixed price dinner in the evening, only managed 2 courses which was £17.95 a head, the wine and coffees were extra. A lovely meal which we thoroughly enjoyed. The staff were very friendly and helpful. Would stay there again.

"What a beautiful hotel."

We called for a bar meal and were really impressed with the beautiful interior, cleanliness and excellent customer service, oh and the food was delicious too. We would definitely consider staying in this hotel on a return trip to this beautiful area. Thank you all for your lovely and professional service.

"Homely and dog friendly "

527sallyannep, Great Wyrley, United Kingdom 03/08/2019

A four night stay in this town centre hotel proved to be a lot more homely and relaxed than I imagined with two dogs and a husband who was working for 2 of the days of our stay. We were greeted with dog beds and bowls already in our room. We were in room 26, lots of stairs and overlooking a courtyard but this really didn't detract from the immaculately clean room with very comfortable bed. Very roomy and all facilities available including excellent room service. Staff are really attentive and efficient. Breakfasts superb. Although there isn't a garden or outdoor area the church yard and small park is just around the corner so making the dogs comfortable wasn't an issue at all. We were made to feel very welcome which isn't always the case when you have dogs with you. We were sad to leave!

We are very doggy friendly here and we enjoy looking after our guests pooches as much as the guests themselves!! I appreciate the lovely detail in the review. I hope you return Dave and team George

"overnight stay"

User 26/07/2019

Booked an overnight stay through Groupon after reading reviews. Staff are the best part of this hotel they are very polite and work very but when you see a stairlift you then realise this hotel is for the older person the bedrooms half modern half dated but this is a old building so don't expect a boutique hotel, the a la carte meal which was in with the price which we had high hopes for but when arrived the chicken was very dry and the steak which should have been medium was well done so we left our meal the best part of the meal was the cheese and cracker ,not worth a £129.

"Nice traditional hotel."

garyfm1972, Lincoln, United Kingdom 26/07/2019

Just had a four night stay at the George Hotel in Penrith. It is a lovely old building with many traditional features. The communal areas are nicely furnished and cosy. We spent the first two nights in a lovely suite with a four poster bed. The decor and fixtures were a little dated but it was nice nonetheless. However the room was so noisy at night. Greggs bakery across the road get a delivery between 3/4am every day. This is a huge lorry that doesn't turn it's engine off and you hear clattering and banging on and off for a good hour. We were moved to room number 10 for the last two nights which was much better. Can't praise the staff enough. Very friendly and attentive. Nothing was too much trouble and they moved everything for us when we moved rooms. The only downside for us was the amount of flies in and around the dining areas. Especially around the breakfast buffet. The pastries need covering over. I did this myself with napkins. The waitress said they are waiting for a cover!! It really was a put off. The hotel really needs to invest in air conditioned accommodation too. Other than that we had a great time and would definitely recommend this hotel.

Stayed at this hotel while visiting Lakes. Great location. Got a dinner, bed and breakfast deal with a glass of Prosecco each. Was impressed with the evening meal. Good choices from A la Carte menu. Did wait a while for food though. Breakfast was lovely as well. Good size room and bed was comfortable. Great lounge area. Staff friendly as well. Will definitely be returning.

The George Hotel is nicely placed in the Town for shops and eating out. The hotel is also conveniently places for good access to the Lakes. The service levels were high with helpful staff throughout. The only issues being there is no lift and it is a long way to the top floor with or without carrying a suit case! The internet service is not very good.

"Excellent base for exploring Westmoreland and Ullswater"

kewfan, London, United Kingdom 10/07/2019

We had 2 very comfortable nights at the George and having booked well in advance got an excellent bed and breakfast rate. Very good value for money and a lovely friendly atmosphere. Dinner on the first night was good and as we were quite late and hadn't booked, they laid a special table for us in the lounge bay window, the restaurant being full. An excellent combination of a traditional hotel downstairs and a very modern bathroom in our bedroom upstairs.

"Lovely hotel in excellent location"

JoyjoyH, Freckleton, United Kingdom 07/07/2019

We stayed here after a long days walking in the lakes, the hotel is in a fantastic location right in the centre of Penrith. We called enroute and were given the postcode for the secure car park at the back of the hotel. The staff were really friendly and we were checked in in seconds, we stayed in a small double room on the 3rd floor which was bright, spacious and clean. We were lucky to have spotted the travel zoo offer for the restaurant so we had booked a table and had a three course meal which was delicious and a bargain using the voucher. Would happily recommend this hotel we will definitely stay again.

One night stay when up in Penrith for an evening out. I as given a very nice room , with a nice selection of tea/coffee and biscuits. Room was spotlessly clean as was the spacious bathroom. Quaint small bar for a nice drink. Very friendly staff in the lounge area and a special mention for Emma in housekeeping who was very friendly and willing to offer assistance to any guests she could help.

Hi Russell Thanks for taking the time to write such a positive review. "Friendly hotel, good service and lovely food"

Sheila J, Lincoln 24/06/2019

Booked to stop one night to break a journey north because my husband had stopped here last year and been impressed. The room we were given was large with a sitting room as well as the bedroom. It was all well equipped, quiet and clean. The food in the restaurant was lovely and the staff helpful and friendly. Breakfast next morning continued in this vein. Also stopped on the return journey a week later, this time just for a meal which we had in the bar. Again friendly, efficient service with good food and good portion size. The beer isnt bad either. Would happily stop here again. For those with dog they are welcome in the bar and lounge areas.,

Visited here for a 3rd time staying here and again was really impressed. The staff here always make us feel welcome in the hotel. The food as well in both the pub and restaurant. The rooms are always clean and tidy and always a good night stay here. The only reason why I gave 4 stars not 5 is cause I think the prices are a little expensive for what you get and for the fact there is no lift in the entire hotel.

Thanks for the great review Ad, Your lovely comments are much appreciated regarding the team and the quality of the food. We have been and still are working hard and with a genuine passion to constantly improve our offering. "JD is an absolute star!!"

Griffithslaura, Durham, United Kingdom 16/06/2019

We booked a table for 22 people (12 adults 8 children) for lunch this weekend, which was for our surprise wedding that we'd told our guests about only the night before. On booking the table JD was fantastic, made the process so easy. We got married at the register office round the corner and misjudged how long it would take so arrived at the George an hour early, this was no issue to JD and he welcomed us all. The children had a table of their own and he quickly took their orders and brought them colouring sheets so they were happy and settled while the adults could toast the day and order our food. Nothing was a problem to JD, he was so lovely and patient with the children, bringing them desert as when each one was finished and if any of us adults wanted changes from the set menu this too was no problem at all. JD is definitely a massive asset to the George, he made our wedding so much more relaxed and special so thank you very much!

Thanks Laura Griffiths, That's a great shout out! JD or "John of the George" is somewhat of a treasure here. He certainly is special! It was nice to meet you all and my wrists have now recovered from sharpening all those coloured pencils!!! Until next time Dave and team George

"The George Hotel"

sffirmani, Riccall, United Kingdom 15/06/2019

We stayed here for 2 nights in May. Never again shall we revisit. The staff were very rude and they really do not know how to apologise. Before we arrived we rang the hotel asking for directions to the car park, a man at reception just gave us a postcode and did not think to tell us that the car park was hidden behind a gate in quite an obscure place. Hence why we parked outside the hotel. On checking in they told us that we couldn't park outside and they eventually explained where the car park was. I explained to reception that it was not very helpful to just provide us with a postcode and no other information, the man at reception replied with nothing and showed no acknowledgement. The cost was £300 for 2 nights including breakfast. The room was very dated,1980s decor and very run down. It was in need of much TLC. The carpet was stained and the floors were very creaky also. The room had a strange damp odour too. The morning when we checked out we took to the dining area and ordered our breakfast, we were waiting over half an hour before it was served and the tea had gone cold obviously. In the meantime we asked what was happening the waitress said “we are very busy” and no apology at all! I would recommend the staff to inform guests to expect delays with breakfasts etc if this is going to be the case. The breakfast itself was the only positive thing about this hotel, cooked well and very tasty. Expensive hotel relative to the poor service we received. The state of the hotel room made us feel quite deflated, I felt far from being in holiday mode. Overall very disappointed.

dave061081, General Manager at The George Hotel, responded to this review
Dear sffirmani, I am sorry you did not enjoy your stay. We always get great reviews especially concerning the team here so I was a little surprised to read your comments. We do have a remarkably friendly bunch here. Please see the last x number of posts. We do give out the postcode for the car park which is a different post code than that of the hotel. This is simply because the hotel is on a one way system and having its own post code makes life remarkably easy for those people who have a sat nav. Unsure what the problem here was as you state you were provided with a post code AND an explanation of where the car park was so both options covered. Not sure what else we could do to make this easier to find. ??? We have a rolling refurbishment program at the hotel and are anticipating a further 6 rooms to be upgraded in the not too distant future. The floors are creaky in places, the building is 400 years old. I do wish you all the best with your future travels Dave and team George

"Traditional, old style hotel"

ColinCJC, Storrington, United Kingdom 14/06/2019

Old style hotel in central Penrith.Good for a stopover. Good lounge area near reception although bar area itself fairly narrow. Good full cooked breakfast, but buffet options limited. Fairly basic bedroom and shower.

"Disappointing Service"

thehigsta, Peterborough, United Kingdom 11/06/2019

Whilst the food we were served was very nice, the service did leave a lot to be desired. We chose a window table which we were aware needed clearing - this was done quickly but then the waiter asked if he could take our order - no pad, no pen. We placed the order for the meal and drinks. The drinks arrived first but the server disappeared before we could say they were incorrect. We had to go and find someone to correct the error. The bill was also presented to us before the meal even arrived.

dave061081, General Manager at The George Hotel, responded to this review
Dear Thehigsta, I have investigated......... I'm sorry you felt it necessary to write such a negative review because there was a slice of lemon in your drink. Please be aware that such reviews can have a negative impact on small, hard working business's and the jobs of the people working there. It is our standard to keep a rolling tab on every table. The dirty table you chose was cleared quickly, and you enjoyed your meals of that I'm glad. I wish you all the best Dave and team George

The George is an upmarket Hotel in the centre of Penrith. I called in for a drink in the bar which is encouraged. The bar staff were friendly and helpful and there was an adequate range of drinks. I didn't eat so can't comment on the food. The clientele in the bar seemed to be residents who were on the elderley side and were there to enjoy a quiet drink and have a chat. With the type of customers in the bar I was very surprised when the background music changed to Iron Maiden's "Take Your Daughter to the Slaughter". This could have been for the bar tenders personal pleasure but his face didn't crack and he must have had no control over the music or he is a very good poker player. Music aside I would definitely recommend a visit to the George.

dave061081, General Manager at The George Hotel, responded to this review
Thanks for the review, If I can explain how the George is laid out it may shed some light on why there is varying music..... Lounges-acoustic, chilled music for well lounging and relaxing. Bar- Rock music for people wanting a little bit more upbeat atmosphere. This widens our niche and hopefully brings more guests into the George. Thanks for your positive comments including the team here. I shall pass them on. Hope to see you again Dave and Team George 01768 862696

"If authentic antiquity is your goal..."

Margaret E, Los Altos Hills, California 05/06/2019

This picturesque hotel is right in the middle of Penrith, a good jumping off place for the Lake District. The bed and bath rooms were adequately supplied, clean and comfortable. We also had a third, sitting room. However, a Saturday night stay in Penrith put us right on the main drag, and the cars/motorcycles/groups went noisily by all night long! Ask for a room on the back of the hotel and you may be happier.

dave061081, General Manager at The George Hotel, responded to this review
Thanks for your review Margaret E Thanks for the good comments about the hotel. Unfortunately on a bank holiday weekend in every town centre in the country there will be noise from revellers who are just a couple of units the happy side of hitting the gutter. Most rooms at the front of the hotel have been fitted with secondary glazing to reduce any noise in the rooms. Thanks for your otherwise positive review and I hope you can return and hopefully score us at 5 stars!!!! Dave and Team George 01768 862696

"Could have been wonderful !"

User 01/06/2019

This hotel is situated in the heart of Penrith . Its classic architecture and Victorian ambience is extremely welcoming and grand . Staff helpful and friendly and the dinner and breakfast excellent . Whilst the general decor and furnishings are a little tired with a slightly fusty odour the venue was good overall . However !! Retiring to bed in a room at the front of the hotel all was well till what sounded like world war three breaking out at the late night takeaway directly opposite our room . Loud, abusive and generally drunken noise woke us up shortly after midnight and carried on nearly all night . Closing the window did not prevent the noise and made the room intolerably hot . Worst night sleep ever . Such a shame that it ruined this short break which could have been so much better .

We made an emergency booking in this hotel on the day of our arrival in Penrith. The BnB we were booked in (Ashberry Guest House) refused to check us in after our train was delayed so the welcome by reception staff was lovely! The room was large, clean and had a lovely modern bathroom and the breakfast was great!

Rooms very comfortable and had everything you need. Comfortable bed. No elevator but you can access the floors with a stair lift. Parking at the rear of the hotel. The George is an iconic Penrith institution and I always come back to stay here if in the area. The charm and relaxed atmosphere is wonderful. The decor is just how you would wish, cosy snugs, well maintained, the bedrooms I have stayed in all good and comfy. Stairs are a bit of a mountain and slope in odd places as do the floors, walls and everything! Which adds to its charm and appeal. Staff always on hand and always helpful.
