    « Great Staff »

Stayed recently on business in the Newcastle region. Staff are always excellent, room very clean. Breakfast a bit basic, but otherwise I'd recommend this hotel. Better value than some I've used in the area.

    « Friendly and small »

Booked in here at the last minute due to business meetings in Newcastle. Parking is sufficient and free and the check in was smooth and attentive. My room was 110 and suitable for disabled guests with a walk in shower room, emergency cord and grab rails. There was plenty of room for a wheelchair, that said I only booked that room due to the low price. The only minor detail is the heat. It was absolutely boiling throughout the night and provided a restless sleep. The window did open enough to provide a breeze. The only other concern is the constant banging of the exterior restaurant door to LuigiKhan's that sat right below my room. Breakfast was fresh and plentiful and included top quality items. Overall I would certainly recommend

    « Overnight Break »

When we entered the hotel we received a warm welcome from the receptionist. The room was immaculately clean and comfortable. I would say my only negative comment would be the breakfast. The food wasn't to my taste and could be improved upon. Mainly the eggs TBH they were just awful but it wouldn't put me off staying here because everything else was great.

    « Top spot »

We stayed one night and can't fault the hotel. Comfortable newly refurbished room, friendly staff, free car parking and just a short walk to the city centre. We had a meal in the restaurant which was busy but that's because it serves up a good curry, reasonably priced too. Breakfast was excellent, we'll be back again.

    « Great base »

My husband and I stayed at the Ryokan on 11th and 12th November. A very comfortable stay. Room was very hot on the first night but this was easily remedied the next night by turning down the thermostat and opening the window. About a 15 minute walk into the centre but remember it is uphill coming back, just get a taxi. Room was clean and and bathroom spacious. Breakfast was buffet style and had a great selection. This was served in a funky little room opposite the reception. Would go back in a minute.

« worst night sleep we've ever had »

Stayed in this hotel with my partner for a weekend away, he's a newcastle fan so we regularly stay for a weekend to watch a match and go out for a meal, we have stayed in a few hotels now and in all honesty we would not stay in this one again. The bed was so uncomfortable, the mattress was so hard I'd have been just as well sleeping on the floor and the walls are very thin, we could hear the people in our neighbouring room, whenever they flushed their toilet or ran their water it was so loud in our room there was no sleeping through it, we were regularly woken through the night from the noise and having to toss and turn as staying on one side too long on that mattress was making my back hurt. The only positive is the free parking and the bathroom was nice and clean. Although we did not eat at the downstairs restaurant louigikhans on this stay we have eaten there on a previous visit to the city and the food is beautiful we would definitely be back to the restaurant but unfortunately the hotel is not what I had expected.

    « Fantastic »

Arrived at the hotel on Saturday afternoon for one nights stay with a friend..... Check in was so simple and staff are very friendly and very welcoming..... Room was immaculate until we unpacked.... I really can't fault any of it.... Had a great night out in town which was only a 10 minute walk from the hotel.......... Breakfast was great and staff were always on hand if u need them.... Luigi Khans Indian restaurant downstairs is to die is amazing....if u don't book in advance you won't get in but that's understandable once you taste the food...... All round........great hotel, great staff and great food.......... Cnt wait to return ??

    « Disappointing »

V disappointed with stay. Room too hot, bed and pillows uncomfortable, loud traffic all night long on the adjacent street, worst night sleep in a hotel ever...... Sorry for the honesty.... don't like leaving bad reviews.

    « Great stay »

We stayed here about a month ago and had a lovely time. Ian, the manager was lovely, really knowledgable about the city, he also changed our room for us so we could have a walk in shower, nothing seemed a problem. It was nice to stay in a hotel where the manager was so visible, he really gives this hotel a heart. Room was good, comfy bed and surprisingly little road noise. You can walk into town in about 15 minutes or taxis were £2.40 to the city centre or £3.60 to the quayside. .Luigikhans was really good and so convenient, we ate there 2 nights out of 3. We will definitely stay here again.

    « Excellent stay »

Excellent stay with excellent food, everything perfect, short walk from city centre, plus lots of places to visit just outside of the city, the best indian food I have ever had, would highly recommend this place you will not be disappointed, also a lovely english breakfast

« Will definitely consider again »

My boyfriend and I booked this hotel based on price and proximity to the city centre in order to attend an event so we weren't looking for much, but we got the perfect place. The staff were helpful, polite and friendly, the room clean and neat with a good sized bathroom. The bed, despite initially feeling bit too firm, was comfortable and I slept very well. Our only regret was that we didn't have the time to visit the attached restaurant, as the menu for Luigi Khan's looked quite tasty! This hotel is just what you need if you want standard, unfussy but comfortable accommodation, and it's an easy mile's walk from the city centre so very conveniently located. Will definitely look into booking again when I'm next visiting Newcastle.

    « Nice Budget Hotel »

Looks could be better from the outside, reception area tiny but the rooms are great. Didn't fancy the breakfast area much and felt it was overpriced but cant really comment as I didn't use it. Rooms are comfy, TV could be bigger but tea/coffee making facilities are ideal. room size is great, wardrobe acceptable but could do with some extra drawer space. A table and chairs would have been nice too

    « Hidden Gem »

This place is a bit of a gem. Rooms are as good as some of the main stream luxury brands. The service from the staff is superb. We had a clothing crisis needing needle and thread. Within 5 mins the lad on reception had found some!

    « Another great stay »

This is the third time I've stayed at this hotel and again it ticks all the boxes. Plenty of parking, easy check in, friendly/attentive reception. Lift to rooms, comfortable, clean room and large comfy bed, room over looking car park ...... Some traffic noise during night (Friday night!). Reception happy to book a taxi for you. We ate in Luigi Khans Indian restaurant which is attached to the hotel (this is excellent). Ryokan Hotel full English breakfast was adequate and tasty. I would be sure to stay here again and recommend it to friends.

    « Brilliant »

The Hotel was much better than expected I have stayed at a lot of Best Western Hotels with Tesco points and have often found the rooms allocated disappointing and tired! NOT the case at The Ryokan the rooms were spotless very clean well decorated and a lovely shower and bath . The breakfast was very nice a choice of hot or cold buffet , and the restaurant is fantastic, the food was 5 star !! and the service,. nothing was too much trouble / Excellent well done !! an

    « Nice Hotel »

Stayed here in September for two nights, very nice clean rooms with TV on the wall. Hotel is about a 10 minute walk to the town centre so very handy to travel between centre and hotel. Hotel has free parking which is always a bonus for any hotel. The only down side was the fact that we sat down for breakfast and only had a glass of orange as there was no food left except for a spoonful of beans three rashers of bacon and a few eggs and ONE sausage but there was 5 of us so we walked out having eaten the one sausage an apple and one of us had a pastry but the hotel rang me on the way home and threatened to get the police until we payed the £35 for the non existent breakfast we didn't have. But would stay there again, just wouldn't eat breakfast in hotel as town isn't much of walk and there are some great places to eat.

« Best Newcastlean Hotel of all... »

This is my favourite hotel where I regularly stay after years of trying many of Newcastle's hotels. This hotel has everything you need and expect, plus more. I have found comfort and safety at this hotel and wouldn't change it, eventhough others are in more affluent areas. This to me has been both an accommodation for business and a family holiday hotel where I stayed and explored North East from. Try this hotel and you will enjoy your stay.

    « One night stay »

The hotel is not in the best location area wise, but taxis are quite reasonable from the centre.. On arrival, the main entrance just looked like a front door, and initially I wasn't sure if it actually was the entrance... So I opened the door to find reception.... The lady behind the counter was pleasant enough, but not overly welcoming... My room was very nice, clean and a good size. Bed was very comfortable. It was to the front of the building on the first floor. The window was above the smoking area for the restaurant - which worried me! I did eat at the restaurant, and it was nice. Luminous red tikka.... But tasty all the same. I was worried that as my room was above the restaurant, that it would be noisy and because the room was directly above the smoking area....there were sounds of music through the the floor, not overtly loud though but this all stopped at 2300hrs... Which was a relief. Breakfast area as others have stated was quite small, but I found it ok... Only gripe, the gent serving assumed I'd want coffee and didn't ask...brought me coffee... I don't drink coffee.... But he soon came out with a pot of tea....but no apology... Check out was better, the lady was much more polite....

« Another stay at the Ryokan hotel »

Well we stayed yet again at the Ryokan hotel using our Best Western rewards points up an having another night out in Newcastle. We stayed this time on the 4th. of June and stayed in room number 104. Still the Ryokan hotel leave you a scribble pad but yet again no pen to write with was left. Again no breakfast was include in this free night stay, The breakfast area is very small basic. No shower cubical in this room just the basic shower inside the bath, unlike our last stay here in room number 105. Rooms and hotel were very clean, and the staff are friendly.

« As Described by Others »

I stayed here earlier this week, and was pretty much as others have described, - perfectly adequate in terms of cleanliness & facilities.A couple of minor gripes though - again as others have mentioned, the breakfast area has more of a feel of a works canteen than a hotel breakfast room. Half a dozen small tables also seems a tad too few to be comfortable for a 20-room hotel. The room was unbearably hot (but it was an unseasonably hot day in fairness) and I had difficulty sleeping as, with the sash window fully open, the road noise was very loud. I had an enjoyable meal at the adjoining Indian Restaurant, but, being a (very) long-time curry addict, I'm not sure where the high praise that the restaurant receives comes from, - this is not negative criticism, but it seemed 'just OK' to me. Finally, the hotel/restaurant is described as having a 'bar' - I think someone who booked the hotel and expected to sit down in the hotel bar with a beer after a long drive might be disappointed. All in all though, the above are only minor points and I will stay again when next in Newcastle.

    « Tess and Co »

Checked in Sat for 2 nights, hotel is perfectly placed, near to station and start of GNR, which is why we were there. Ian the manager and his staff couldn,t have been more accommodating, nothing was too much trouble, they even providing a complementary goody bag for GNR participants. There were 6 of us, the rooms were great the hotel was great and the staff were exceptional. We had a meal on Sunday evening which was delicious and well priced, again the staff were great, so it was a WOW all round for us I would defenitely recommend this hotel

« Great base for the GNR »

Booked this hotel to stay at for the Great North Run. The hotel is about a 20 minute walk from both start of the race, and Newcastle Central station. The staff were friendly and helpful, and the snack bags given out to runners on the morning of the race were a great touch. I'd also recommend the restaurant if you're after a good curry. Would definitely stay here again.

« A convenient location with a highly rated restaurant on site »

I stayed at the Ryokan when returning my son to university. I wanted a hotel close to the city centre with parking and not in a noisy location. The Ryokan is about a mile from the city centre, downhill if you fancy the walk, in a really nice old building with a good amount of on site parking. The staff were very pleasant and the room and facilities were excellent. I met my son in the evening to go for something to eat and the taxi into town was less than £4, double that coming back as I picked up a black cab from the town centre. When I returned to the hotel I went to the bar for a drink before bed. The bar is within the on site restaurant Luigi Khans and the staff were very attentive. The restaurant was very busy and the food smelled delicious. When I looked for places to eat in Newcastle the restaurant was rated number 2 in the whole city out of hundreds of places to eat. If I go back up to see my son I would definitely stay at the hotel again and book a table at the restaurant for dinner.

    « Very enjoyable stay »

Me & my husband decided on Newcastle for our Anniversary break. The hotel was lovely. Our room was spacious & very modern & the bed was really comfortable. The town centre was a 10 minute walk with plenty to see & do. We used our time to shop & visit the beautiful castles that were just an hours drive away. I would definitely recommend this hotel for its convenience & the lovely staff that work there. Ian was on morning duty reception who had a wealth of knowledge on Newcastle & pointed us to places of interest although we still managed to get lost! Bianca was on duty later in the day & was always nice to see her as we returned from our travels, nothing was too much trouble for her.

« Random Pick for business stay »

Looking for hotel that was close to where I was going. At first the area looked not suited to leaving a car parked overnight. However hotel had own car park. Pleasantly surprised. Clean, comfortable though minimilaist decor. Bathroom comapct to say the least but all there. For eating a curry house on the ground floor (separate restaraunt) . Good food, good choice, staff friendly. All in all I would use again

« Great hotel for visiting football fans! »

We stayed at the Best Western Ryokan Hotel for one night with the primary purpose of attending a NUFC v. BHAFC football match. Upon arrival, we parked in the ample car park only a few steps from the front door. We were greeted in the small but sufficient reception area by a friendly member of staff. Our room was on the first floor and it was lovely and comfortable. Not overly large, but certainly big enough. The toilet/shower were spotless and again, although small, were perfectly sufficient. St. James's Park is less than 10 minutes away by foot. Following the match, we had dinner at the adjoining restaurant, LuigiKhans. The food was fantastic, plentiful and very reasonably priced. Although it was quite busy, the service was excellent. Breakfast the next morning was delicious. I'm very picky about my eggs and thought the omelette was a nice change from the wet scrambled eggs you normally get with hotel breakfasts. It was only a 10 minute walk into the centre of Newcastle so we spent Sunday morning and early afternoon strolling around town. We even bought some sausages to take home from a market stall down by the river. When we got home, we discovered that we had left our phone charger behind. After contacting the hotel we received word that they had found it and would be posting it back to us. Top service!

« Good base for exploring »

Reasonably convenient for walking into town - all downhill! walking back is energetic. Watch for cab drivers taking indirect routes back to hotel. Room OK, a little on the small side - a shower only. One spare electrical socket is not enough these days. Bed large and comfortable. TV small. Staff were friendly, but forgot paper when ordered night before. However they popped out and bought one - top marks. Didn't have dinner in the restaurant, but menu looked good and not overpriced. However, breakfast was probably the worst we've had in a Best Western for some time. Nothing wrong with the cereals , toast etc, but the cooked breakfast consisted of the cheapest sausages going (tasted more of bread than anything else), bacon that appeared to be stewed, baked beans and omelette, all sat in containers. My partner said the omelette was OK.. Both of us had the cold option the next morning!

« Good Base For Visiting Newcastle. Not Great Wheelchair Access. »

We stopped here for four nights for a last minute break to visit area.Good for access to Newcastle and Quaryside, bit of a hike into town - took about 20-30 minutes. The room was a good size and clean and the staff are very friendly and helpful. The breakfast room as very small, with small tables and the cooked breakfast wasn't very good. The restraunt that is attached to the hotel is an indian restraunt which was fine for us because we love indian food, but may be a problem if you don't. The food was excellent, but a little expensive to do every night. We couldn't find any restraunts in the nearby area, it was mostly fast food takeaways. There are plenty of places to eat in Newcastle and some lovely little pubs along the Quayside. I am in a wheelchair so we requested a room with disabled access. There is a dsabled parking space near a ramp to the hotel, however there is a van parked next to the space advertising the indian restraunt which is parked at an angle, so it was difficult to get our Galaxy into the space and we had to park in another non disabled space. The ramp up to the hotel was OK, but when we got in and checked in, the room we were in was on the 1st floor, which was fine as there is a lift. However, there are two steps down to the lift, the staff did put a fold up ramp on the steps for us, but this was quite steep and narrow and a scary experience. If I was on my own I don't think I would've managed to get up and down. The room was a good size and clean. The shower room/toilet was good with raised toilet and good amount of grab rails, however the lighting was rubbish, especially over the sink.

« Great Hotel, Lovely Staff »

After a mix-up with our booking at another venue, we were happy to be directed to the Best Western Ryokan Hotel. Staff were welcoming and helpful throughout our stay, rooms were great size and I love how I didn't need to look far for the Wifi code. First time I was in Newcastle, visiting from Glasgow, and the comfort-ability of the hotel made our stay a lot better.

« Good base in Newcastle »

Stayed for three nights in August 2016. We had requested a disabled access room and were very pleased with what we had - wet room style bathroom with lots of hand rails. Breakfast is served in the small reception area, which was easily accessible to me, despite my limited mobility. Staff were all very friendly and helpful concerning my needs. We didn't try Luigikhans restaurant on this occasion, but it did seem a popular place to eat. Only minus point was the level of noise coming up from some sort of motor/ generator in the restaurant below , but this stopped before midnight.

    « Great location »

This is one of my most fancy hotel in West gate road. My friend logged here and I went to check them out , I was happy to see those hidden gem in that hotel. You will absolutely love all the setting and services in this hotel. The hotel is not cheap but affordable.

« Wonderful weekend in this excellent hotel »

On arriving at this hotel we were greeted with a very warm welcome from Ian the manager who explained to us all about hotel ,gave us a map to show us how to get around Newcastle , room was spotless clean ,beautiful big bathroom ,most comfortable kingsize bed ,

    « Weekend stay »

Stayed at this hotel for two nights in July! Fantastic stay and highly recommend to others visiting the area!! Only a short walk to the city centre the hotel is in the perfect location for all local amenities and attractions. Rooms itself are very nice with large comfy beds and all necessary facilities to make your stay as relaxing as possible. Staff and GM were very attentive and cater for your every needs! Room service is available from the restaurant attached and is delivered quick and fresh to your room! It's up there with some of the best Indian food I've ever had! Highly recommend this hotel to anyone visiting Newcastle! You will no be disappointed!

    « Weekend away »

We were here for two nights, Saturday & Sunday the hotel has plenty of parking spaces and is only a ten minute walk down the hill to the town centre. The rooms are spot on and the bed was very comfortable, We do like a nice bathroom when we are away and this hotel has very nice ones. We had room service from the restaurant, If you like good qualaty indian food then you are in for a treat. The staff are nice and can't do enough for you. If you want to know anything about the area then have a chat with the General Manager Ian

    « Excellent Hotel »

The rooms are first class and spacious and very clean .all of the staff are extremly pleasant and hepfull and would not hesitate to book the Ryoken again It also has a first class Indian Restaurant which is a must vist

    « Great, friendly hotel! »

I stayed in this hotel on a trip to Newcastle visiting a friend. It was well priced for a weekend and within walking distance (about 15 - 20 minutes) from the station and town centre. This was ideal for me as I wanted somewhere that would be quiet during the night which it was! It was also fine walking back there on the Saturday night. The room was excellent. Very clean and well presented. I didn't have breakfast so can't comment on that. The general manager Ian who was working on the desk during my stay was friendly and approachable and happy to help and made me feel more welcome and comfortable, especially considering I was travelling alone. I would definitely stay here again and recommend it to others. The only thing I would mention is the hotel is up a hill. So if you're walking and have mobility problems then it wouldn't be the most ideal.

« Nice hotel, great Indian restaurant »

I stay here on a regular basis and always use it when I have business in Newcastle. Hotel is friendly and the added bonus of one of the best indian restaurants around is great. On a downside the TVs in the room are far too small and really need to be upgraded and last time I stayed the internet wa down (1st time this has happened so hopefully a one-off).

« Convenient hotel located not too far from the centre. »

The bedroom was quite large with comfortable beds but the lighting in the room and in the bathroom was poor; it was impossible to read in bed and difficult to shave. Unfortunately Expedia had the wrong postcode for the hotel and this defeated the SatNav! The breakfast was barely adequate and the breakfast room miniscule. The ground floor of the hotel was occupied by a popular Indian Restaurant so that parking was very difficult in the evenings.

    « Comfortable »

This is quite a small, compact hotel which from the outside belies it's interior charm. The reception and breakfast area are very small, to the point where if it were busy it would verge on the uncomfortable. My room was decently appointed and modern. There was a thermostat in the room which suggested that there was the ability to regulate the temperature, unfortunately, this was just a left over of a bygone time. There is no air-con nor is there any way (other than opening the window) to regulate the temperature. Breakfast was ok, the continental aspect was fair but the cooked items were of poor quality. WIFI was advertised as available but although it would allow you to log in, there was no connection to the internet.

« Nice hotel, pity about the location »

The hotel is a good conversion of a stone-faced old house, with tasteful interior design. The room was large and comfortable, and cleaning was of the highest standard. Unfortunately, the situation is on the edge of the city centre at the top end of Westgate Road; the lower end of this road is very run down and you have to walk through it, or alteratively across a large area of derelict land, to get to the centre. It is a 15 minute walk from the Newcastle Central station. This location would, on the other hand, be good for anyone travelling by car, and there appears to be ample car parking. The wifi stopped working on the second day of my visit and the attempt to fix it was not successful, so I had no more wifi for the remainder of the five day stay.

    « Nice little hotel »

A nice little hotel within easy walking distance of Newcastle town centre and the Quayside. Nice spacious rooms and very helpful staff, and an excellent Indian restaurant which is part of the hotel. Easy to find as well.

    « Recent visit »

Staff were friendly and the showers r good. The best thing about the hotel is the restaurant LuigiKhans really nice food. The breakfast is not so good and the taste of the sausage can only be described as captain birds eyes A.RSEHOLE. The sign does say pork sausage but I'm pretty sure it's pigs cock!

« excellent hotel in very poor area of newcastle »

This hotel is very clean and very welcoming, we stayed for bed and breakfast. The room was spotless but the breakfast is not the best. This area of Newcastle is not very welcoming, very run down with nothing to see.

    « Convient location - helpful staff »

Excellent for city centre access - bus, walking or car. Direct route to A69 and Hadrian's wall in the other direction. For a main road site - much quieter than I expected. Onsite restaurant had an interesting menu which we enjoyed exploring and very attentive staff even when we were sat out of the way (by choice) where there was natural light on a summer evening. Breakfast was ready bang on time and we were fed well - the tables are compact.

« Quiet, comfortable pleasant hotel that suited us perfectly. »

While I was at a conference at the Beacon Centre about 1/2 mile further up Westgate Rd, my husband was able to walk into the centre of Newcastle in 20 minutes to explore the sights, so it was very convenient. When we were there, it was quiet, with no hen/stag parties, ( & I gather that if they have groups staying that prove too rowdy, that they are shown the door!) Bed comfy & room & en-suite spotlessly clean. Excellent substantial breakfast with great variety of food on offer, but the breakfast room though stylish, was a bit small, though not too cramped due to extended hours. Husband said that the Indian restaurant was excellent too. Altogether, a real find for us.

« A weekend at the Ryokan Hotel »

Staff at this hotel were very friendly and helpful. Rooms were clean and a good size. We would definitely recommend a visit to the restaurant as the quality of the food is excellent. Service here was also brilliant.

« Will not stay again. »

Booked in here for 2 nights whilst meeting friends in Newcastle. Check in fine, room seemed fine at first.. Sash windows would not stay open, extractor fan in bathroom didn't work, cover over card reader for electricity supply broken, shower tray overflowed, bed still had plastic covers on the base and the made didn't return to make up the room. Breakfast area pathetic, seating for about 10 -12 people, too busy Sunday morning so didn't bother.

    « Excellent value »

Helpful staff - good food, excellent web service. 5 Mins from city centre. Very clean room - everything worked as expected. Plenty of parking. All together a relaxed envirnment, comfortable and great value

    « Visited 3 or 4 times »

Before moving to Newcastle I stayed here alot. First impressions from the side and the back I was unsure but on entering the reception is done out nicely with a restaurant which always appears to be busy with local family groups and having tasted the food I can see why. Food is lovely with lots of choice and a really well stocked bar. Breakfast was different as a halal kitchen pork is replaced with turkey rashers which was nice for a change. Rooms are what you would expect of a best Western, roomy, tidy and great value and always am good nights sleep in this one in particular. Staff are always pleasant and helpful and as I used to be a regular visitor even took the time and effort to give me the same room and call me by name after my initial visit. Great for local services and city centre

    « Brilliant Hotel »

I have been staying regularly at this hotel for over a year now. What would you expect from a hotel rather than hospitality, cleanliness, friendliness and car park? At this particular check in, I was a bit early and the room wasn't available while being refreshed. While I was waiting in lobby/breakfast area, I was offered a rather nice Cappuccino prepared by none but the hotel's manager. What else do you want? I wouldn't go anywhere else.

« Ok hotel for one night »

The staff were really friendly and helpful, particuarly the male receptionist when we arrived. The room was quite small and so was bathroom with not a ot of space to put things. room was clean and comfortable. There was plenty of parking but only one disabled space which was difficult to use because there was an advertising vehicle parked next to it at an angle. There is only an Indian restaurant attached to the hotel. The food was lovely and the staff were very nice. i woud not have wanted to eat there for more than one consecutive night though. Break fast was in a tiny room with tiny tables. the cooked breakfast was a limited buffet of bacon, sausage and beans which did not look appetising so we stuck to croissants and toast. Hotel is close to city and convenient for metro centre. we booked using Tesco Clubcard and this was easy

« Phenomenal Venue and Service »

Visiting Newcastle with my partner and our 3 children was an amazing experience thanks to the staff of the Ryokan. Their welcoming and friendly approach to the service they provide was a refreshing change to that of some other establishments we have encountered on our travelling around the UK. The Idilic building and location allow for a unique experience and offer a perfect base to explore from. Rooms were spotless and the kids were welcomed and treated excellently. A heart felt Thanks to all the staff for making our time there such a memorable experiences G. Motherwell

« Gorgeous contemporary hotel within easy walking distance of the city centre »

Attending a city centre function and taxi fares made it an expensive evening. Looked for a reasonably priced hotel and discovered this little gem. Car parking, and on site restaurant to boot. Room was immaculate and very comfortable bed. I missed breakfast due to me wanting to stay in the comfy bed as long as possible. Ideal for business, couples, families and solo guests. And extra special attraction....the staff. Couldn't have been nicer.

« Great location fir city visit »

Visited Newcastle for a family wedding and the Ryokan was recommended. Staff were very welcoming, room was (for our budget) excellent with all we could ask for. Would happily stay again and recommend. Breakfast was excellent too and the location ideal fir all we wanted to do/ see in the city

« Stylish and comfortable Highly recommend »

I stayed for one night. Very easy check in and check out.The staff were very friendly and especially the manager who was very helpful with local informantion. Easy parking. Very comfortable and clean room.

    « Fantastic »

Me and my partner stay at the hotel if we are ever in Newcastle for a night out with friends! The location is great, a short walk to the bars we like to go too! The rooms are really nice and great value and the beds are really comfy. The staff are really friendly and always there to help.

    « highly recommend »

Hotel is lovely and airy. Room was immaculate and very clean. Staff were very helpful organising taxis for the short trip into town. Breakfast was tasty and plenty of it. Will definately be back. Bed was so comfy I slept like a baby.

    « Gay pride visit »

Lovely friendly hotel. Rooms were spotless and the food in the restaurant adjoining was fantastic.Staff could not have been more helpful during our stay. One of our group went missing and we had to involve the police. The staff assisted every step of the way and all turned out well in the end.

    « Highly recommended!! »

Lovely spacious rooms and beautifully cleaned! Amazing large double bed and gorgeous bathroom. The staff were very friendly. The nightlife in Newcastle was a 5 minute taxi ride which was extremely handy. Would definitely stay here again.

    « very clean hotel »

Visited for a one night free stay using our Best Western points, but when you redeem your Best Western points you are only entitled room only and no breakfast is included, so we emailed the Best Western Ryokan hotel they told us to contact Best Western direct to organise a gift card to use at this hotel redeemed from our Best Western points. But the Best Western Ryokan hotel did not tell us how much the breakfast would be in order to organise the gift card, so we went out for breakfast to the Wetherspoons Union bar which was a 10 to 15 minute walk downhill into town at a cost of £11 for the two of us. Breakfast at the Best Western Ryokan hotel was only a continental breakfast. Best Western Ryokan hotel was about a ten to fifteen minute walk into town. On entry to the hotel, the reception was tiny with the breakfast area to the left. The lift took us up to our room number 105, which was very clean with pristine white sheets, a large bed, but a very small TV. Bathroom was modern with a good double power shower. Wi-Fi internet was free any easy to use, wardrobe only big enough for a one night stay. Staff were friendly, we wanted a couple of glasses for our in room pre drinks as there was only plastic glasses in the room and they provided them no problem. the hotel left a blank canvas note pad but left no pen to write with! The Best Western Ryokan hotel has a Indian restaurant attached to it.

    « Immaculate »

We stayed here for 3 nights, check in was easy and hassle free. The room was spotless, couldnt fault it at all. The hotel is situated in a residential area, but not far from the city centre, it was quiet at night and parking plentiful. The staff were friendly and helpful. We had breakfast which is where I have a small moan. There is a great selection of food with the cold continental option. However, they now offer a hot option. It consisted of a frozen omlette, microwaved bits of bacon, I know this because I asked for bacon and he got it out of the freezer and then microwaved it,... and a hard sausage. They were in hot trays so not cooked to order. Very disappointing. But we opted for the option of toast and cereal. This is a great hotel, so much so that I didnt mention the hot breakfast, even though this disappointed us. So please, if the management read this review, please change the hot offerings and make it more appetising. We would definately stay again then.

Recently refurbished to a high standard with very clean rooms and very helpful staff. Well located close to city centre. Plenty of free car parking which is a major advantage in most cities. The restaurant was Punjabi and whilst I am not a great fan of Indian food, I had a very enjoyable meal and service was excellent

    « Great value hotel »

Stayed for one night, check in was very simple, all staff we encountered were very polite and welcoming. The bed was comfy, room was clean and modern, we slept well. Location wise - very close to St James' park. only a 15 minute walk from the city centre, but uphill! Would stay again on similar trip. We didnt try it but there was a restaurant downstairs, and drinks etc available from reception.

« Small simple hotel about 15 minutes walk from city centre »

This hotel was a good price for a weekend night and is about 15 minutes walk from both St James Park and Newcastle City Centre, though it is up at the top of a hill so if you have mobility problems you might want to get the bus which stops right outside. The rooms were clean and looked quite new - only problem was how loud the pipes were when the toilet was flushed, I thought the world was ending. Taxi from city centre was £6 after midnight. They don't have a bar but they will sell you alcohol from a fridge at reception. I didn't have breakfast so can't comment on that but it is probably worth paying for as you are about 15 minutes walk from any other food outlets.

    « Excellent! »

This is a lovely little hotel. They have a large outside car park which is ideal if you have a van, which I did. The staff at the desk were very friendly and happy to help. The breakfast was basic but was well presented. Rooms were very comfortable and clean. The room has underfloor heating. This meant that the room was almost unbearably hot when I arrived and took a while to cool down. The windows open though. It is attached to an Indian Restaurant which is very handy for evening meals as there is about a 10 to 20 minute walk into town.

    « Decent hotel »

Stayed in this hotel for one night in January . Its only a 10-12 minute walk from the city centre close to St James Park. The rooms appear to have been refurbished and they have underfloor heating which was a little hot tbh. You can open the windows which is a bonus. The only downside was the breakfast which is continental but there is a poor choice of things to eat. I recently stayed in a Premier inn which has a far better breakfast for a lot less money.

« Nice, clean, friendly hotel »

Me and my boyfriend stayed here on friday 4th March as we were going to the Newcastle VS Bournemouth match the following day. When we got to the hotel it was easy to find and easy access after all the city centre traffic. It is located on the top of a steep hill so if you aren't very good on your legs already i wouldn't recommend this hotel to you. The reception area is small but cute, when we arrived we were greeted by a receptionist who told us that our booking wasn't until the following day ( which wasn't right as when we wanted to originally book for both the fri and sat. ( before we booked my boyfriend did call to see if the sat was available and it was not so this why we did not book that night) so this is a mistake on the system and very confusing as we only booked the Friday night and did not change this booking in any way. The young girl at reception accommodated us a room facing the front of the hotel which we must say was lovely. I loved the old fashioned windows where you have to pull it up to open it. The room was modern as so was the bathroom. We did not try the food here but we never do at hotels. Check out the following day was easy. The cleaner did come in earlier than our check out time But we were ready to go so this wasn't a problem. This hotel is in a good location and took us 10-15 minute walk to St James Park so very convenient. We have decided we would stay here again. We also kept our car in the hotel car park all day Saturday so that was convenient for when we attended the match.

« Decent hotel for the money »

Stayed here for a week for work recently. It's about 20 minutes' walk into Newcastle and it's downhill so of course coming back is going to be a bit tougher. It's about £5 in a taxi each way if you don't want to walk. I don't exercise enough when I'm staying away for work so I purposely booked this to force me to get out in the evenings. In order to get to town, you have to walk through what you might describe as a socially deprived area, but in all honesty this is just a small part of your journey and I never once felt unsafe ? the street is well lit and there's plenty of traffic and other people around. The tower blocks that someone else has mentioned were very quiet, I didn't see or hear anyone there. The hotel has recently been renovated and the rooms are very nice, spotlessly clean and in good order. The bathroom was the same, looked brand new. Free toiletries available, nothing special but decent stuff. Towels and bedding all looked new too and good quality. The room has tea and coffee, TV and a desk, no frills but very clean and functional. Wifi is very good (and free). Breakfast is continental so toast, fruit, yoghurt? selection was fairly good. As I was leaving they were fitting the reception area out with food serving facilities and apparently they're going to do cooked breakfasts soon too. I didn't eat in the restaurant as I don't eat Asian food and the only real negative is that if you are looking for food in the evenings, there's nothing close apart from the on-site Indian restaurant. If you fancy anything else you have to go into town. But if you enjoy a walk in the evening, then you won't find a better budget hotel for the price.

    « Another good stay »

We stayed here recently while attending an event at the Metro Radio Arena. We had stayed previously and found the hotel still had the qualities we found at our last visit. It is not a 5 star hotel but the price reflects that, what it is is a perfectly good hotel. The staff are incredibly friendly and obliging and the hotel is spotless. Yes it is a short walk 5/10 minutes from the centre but the free parking makes up for that. If you are travelling from the west along the A69 it is very straightforward to get there - from the A69 up West Street and on to Westgate Road - a straight run that misses all the traffic in the centre. Would definitely use this hotel again.

    « sadly let down »

Stayed here for one night on 20/02/16,hotel clean and tidy, newly painted as you could still smell it. room was very acceptable and warm area is a tip,as if hotel was just dropped in a war zone. This is not meant as a bad review so here is the good bit,LUIGIKHAN restaurant at hotel is probably the best indian food we have ever tasted, cannot recommend it enough. Now the major reason we will never return, breakfast or lack of it is a joke,we were told they do cooked breakfast, they don't, ! what they do offer is not even what we would call continental. What a let down, would warn the owners that if the restaurant stops being so good and basically keeps the hotel going, then the hotel will suffer big time.

    « Better breakfasts please »

This is a lovely hotel. Clean, freshly decorated and the room was excellent. The breakfast provision was poor. The continental breakfast was expected but the bread and pastries were very, very dry and gave the impression these were put out the night before. There were few guests taking breakfast so an excessive quantity had been was put out , presumably for effect. It would have been better to have had less displayed and replenished only when necessary so that it was all fresh. The quality of the bread and pastries provision could also be improved - using locally produced produce perhaps. The crockery, cutlery and tea also had a residual odour of the Indian cuisine produced in the kitchen which was not in keeping with breakfast flavours. Very disappointing and this let the hotel down badly. We had to search for someone to check us in on arrival - and again when we left.

    « Mr & Mrs Winter »

We stayed at this hotel for 2 nights and found it very relaxing and friendly. The evening meal was 1 of the best we have had on our trips and very well priced. We would definitely stay in this hotel again when in the area.

« Good low cost hotel »

This hotel has comfortable room but basic and not very sound proof, breakfast is continental and has lots of choice. The hotel has no bar but it has an Indian restaurant attached but nowhere to just sit and have a beer. That said good value for a couple of nights.

    « No public spaces »

A strange hotel with no public space. It is above an Indian restaurant (that gets very good reviews) so there is no lounge, just a small reception area. If you just want a bed that's fine but if you want a hotel with facilities then this isn't for you.

« Excellent Indian Resturant attached to the hotel »

I've stayed at this hotel a number of times now when visiting Newcastle on business. The location is great for the city center, just 10 mins walk and your in the center of things, get a taxi back though as its a slight uphill return journey. The room was very warm and of a good standard for the price. The highlight for me is the Indian restaurant attached to the hotel, LuigiKhans. The food here is excellent.

    « Excellent »

Great stay. Lovely, friendly staff. Very welcoming. Ian on reception gave us lots of information, lots of places to go & see during our stay. Our room was fab, clean, & comfortable. Our stay over all was excellent. All needs catored for. Great break in Newcastle.

« Great Stay for RWC »

We stayed here for 2 nights for the Rugby World Cup and had a great experience. The hotel is easy to get to from the A1 and has plenty of parking outside. For us the location was good, a short walk to the stadium but a longer walk to the city center shops and restaurants (though not long enough for us to want to drive, we didn't use our car at all during our stay). I felt safe in the area, there are a couple of tower blocks nearby but we walked back to the hotel at night and didn't have a problem. All the staff we encountered were very friendly and accommodating. The hotel lobby is small but it's pleasant and functional. Our room was clean, modern and comfortable with a nice modern bathroom. Overall we enjoyed our stay and felt it was the perfect choice for us to enjoy the RWC. We wouldn't hesitate to stay there again.

« Second stay and not disappointed »

This was my second stay at this hotel, I said last time that I didn't know when I was going to get the opportunity to stay here again, then when I was asked by my manager to come up this way I was straight onto the Best Western site to book it again and I was not disappointed, if anything it was better, the food in the restaurant is outstanding again, I went for the same starter, but a different main which was very tasty and plentiful to the point where I had to leave some, once again thank you to every one who made my stay a great experience

« friendly and warm welcome »

Arived at 2 o clock, meet with a warm and friendly receptionist, rooms were clean spacious and warm. Went out into town, when we returned we asked for a taxi to take us to the Sage at 7, which she ordered. On our return I asked for more milk, which was brought straight up by the night reception, continental breakfast was superb, plenty of choice. Would definitely stay again

    « Didn't sleep a wink »

Stayed here for one night before an important meeting the next day and it was a huge disappointment. On arrival the taxi driver told me not to leave the hotel as the area is one of the worst and very dangerous. The hotel is sat next to three huge council tower blocks. People were hanging around the nearby streets drinking and looking pretty dodgy to be honest. It's a good location as it is a short taxi ride from the station but the actual area is scary. On arrival the receptionist was very nice and no issues there. All floors are accessible via lift. The room it self was a good size with a large very comfortable bed and nice enough sheets. Pillows felt a bit cheap but no issues. The room its self though really needs some TLC. There were marks all over the walls. Also a whole in the wall which looks like someone kicked it in. The bathroom looked new and tasteful but there were a few hairs in the shower and the tile grout needs a good clean. The room when i arrived was very warm so I turned down the thermostat to the lowest setting. It was the worst nights sleep I have ever had as I didn't sleep. The room was so hot. So I opened the window. I was on the first floor. So just to advise those with children there were no safety catches on the window and it opened right up. The few from my window was of a tower block. I also didn't feel very safe in such an area as there was a ground floor building under my window that anyone could have got up on and into my room. With the window open to try and cool the room the noise from traffic was very loud. I thought it would calm down but carried on all night. I had to give a presentation the next day and felt very sick from lack of sleep. I couldn't eat breakfast the next morning as I felt ill so I can't comment on that. I was actually sick later that day due to lack of sleep. There were a few positives. The wifi was free and strong, nice staff and cheap. But that is not enough to make up for a night of no sleep.

    « Home to home »

This is the hotel I have stayed at least once a month and each time 2-3 nights ever since February 2015 and a few times before that. You aren't talking about a five star boutique and chic, but why do you need that while you have great hosts in a cosy beautiful hotel? Rooms are clean and spotless at all times including beds, bathroom and carpets. Corridor doors are well hinged, so no doors slamming as you may find it in some top hotels as well. The staff are really friendly and see to your needs. I had a bit of problem with my shower this time and I reported it to the manager who by the way, is such a friendly and helpful man. On my return in the evening the shower was sorted and a brand new tap replaced the old one. Breakfast is continental, but it does have a good variety including fresh fruit, flavoured yogurt, smoke salmon, ham, cheese, a few different pastries and freshly ground coffee is served endlessly. One of the most important features of this hotel is the spacious car park, which although could be a bit crowded at night due to their award winning Indian Restaurant serving its guests, but there is always space for hotel guests as well. In my regular business trips to North East, this is my hotel that I always think as home.

    « hotel with a nice suprise »

clean and comfortable hotel bonus is it is right next door to one of the best Indian restaurants I've been to in years will go back again, not to far from town centre 5 minute taxi ride ideal for a stay away from town cenrre

    « Friendly place »

When we arrived at 2 o clock no rooms were ready . We asked about a upgrade as we had a gold card and the guy on reception knew nothing about them . We asked for directions to a restaurant and he seemed confused . The room was spotless and the reception area had a token pop up Xmas tree . The beds were very comfortable and there was no road noise as previous guests had suggested. We went to our concert and returned back to the hotel that evening , unfortunately the restaurant was closed on our return but the menu looked good . The following morning we checked out , and as if by magic , a fabulous guy was replaced on reception . He was chatty , knowledgeable, personal. Fabulous. If you go to this hotel ask for Ian he's amazing. He recommended places to eat, shopping. He let us keep our car in the car park whilst we got sorted . Fantastic guy with amazing customer care skills . 10/10 .

    « Outstanding Hotel »

Absolutely brilliant hotel, the room was comfortable and clean. The restaurant was amazing, when I looked at the menu I thought it was a little under priced so was expecting either small portions or not so good quality, I was wrong on both accounts, the food was plentiful and the taste was outstanding, when I spoke to the man on check out the next morning and mentioned the price he told me that the locals have said it is pricey! I nearly didn't book this hotel because they only do a continental breakfast, but after such a great meal the night before I couldn't have faced a cooked breakfast and what was on offer was again to a high standard.

    « basic »

i stayed there for one night when down on business, staff friendly, room very basic but functional, location is next to three high rise blocks of flats and forms part of an indian/italian restraunt. breakfast is a real let down, a continental breakfast at best that had the lingering smell of indian food through it. wouldnt book it again.

    « Lovely big bed! »

As our taxi driver pointed out its not in the best area, but saying that it was OK, we walked around the area and had no problem. Lovely big bed, good room only down fall was the mouldy bath mat, which we left on show hoping the cleaner would bleach it. Breakfast was alright, a cooked breakfast would be nice, very limited.

    « Lack of a cooked breakfast! »

Great price for a room only, but no cooked breakfast option available and the only food served by the restaurant at night is Indian, which is fine if you fancy a curry but very limited, considering the other hotels in the city competing for the same business.

« Friendly staff and comfortable hotel »

I stayed here for 4 nights in business. Rooms are a good size, clean, quiet and very comfortable. The staff are all really friendly and extremely helpful. Breakfast is continental with a good selection of very fresh food. It is a 10 minute downhill walk to town. To be honest I did not feel comfortable walking back alone at night but taxis are very cheap so this was not a problem. The Indian restaurant is amazing and service exceptional, you have to eat here if you are in Newcastle.

    « A great find »

I've stayed here a number of times now and it's becoming my favourite. Clearly had some money spent on it recently and the room are lovely. The restaurant is a curry house so if this is not your thing possibly not for you. But the food is excellent and I look forward to visiting each time.

« Ok for an overnight stay »

I had one night at the Ryokan on a business trip. It is clean and tidy but fairly basic. Staff friendly and helpful. The room was clean with good bathroom, bath and shower. Shower was very good which is always a bonus. The only real down side for me was the thickness of the walls, I could hear the conversation in the room next door very clearly, and they weren't noisy by any means. No means of opening the window for fresh air. The restaurant attached to the hotel is an Indian and is very good.

    « Very good with a surprise »

Nice small Beat Western with the added bonus of the restaurant being India and the food is good. Rooms are modern and clean. This a small hotel but lives upto what you expect from a Best Western and is only the second one I've stayed in that has an Indian restaurant mind you if you don't like Indian food this might not be for you.

    « A good City Centre venue »

Having stayed at a number of hotels in Newcastle upon Tyne, I can safely say that this is one of the best for the price paid. Good well appointed rooms, very comfortable and close to all the city amenities.

    « Great little hotel »

A great hotel with good facilities and near to the city centre. We booked this for one night to watch the NZ rugby world cup game. Very clean, neat room with all the mod cons and views over to St James Park. The staff are friendly and I would definitely stay here again. Really easy to find from the A1 and plenty of parking. There's an excellent Indian restaurant on site too.

    « Ryokan Stay »

A great place to base a stay in Newcastle. Helpful staff and worth a visit to the restaurant Luigi Khans if Curry is your thing - one of the best Indian dinners I have had. Only 15 minutes from Metro and on bus link to town. Lovely comfy bed

    « warm welcome »

hotel well placed 10 minute walk to city centre. it was only a small hotel with limited facilities, but just right for a weekend break. staff were friendly and helpful and did all they could to make our stay special. our bedroom was at the front of the hotel and although near the main road, we didn't hear any noise.

« Value City Centre Hotel »

This hotel is very near the centre of Newcastle with free parking, free internet and a very good Indian restaurant. Overall the rooms are clean and comfortable and the price is good for a city centre based hotel. It is very near the Universities and hospitals.

« A great hotel close to the city centre »

A lovely hotel close to the city but far enough away to be quiet. I would recommend this hotel if stopping on business in Newcastle. Don't let the are put you off. The restaurant has a great South Asian cuisine mix to suit all tastes.

« Great stay once again! »

Stayed her recently on a Saturday evening. We parked up outside prior to check in and took the short bus ride to the city centre, took a walk around the shops and had a few drinks within the city centre. On return to the hotel about 8pm the check in was swift and staff member very friendly. She then made us a reservation for the restaurant with the table ready once we had dropped off our bags. The restaurant food is great to a really high standard & prices are really reasonable. The room was comfortable and very clean. Breakfast was included with our room just continental but lots of choice and very fresh food. Really great hotel for a city stay.
