"Great gastro pub and hotel"
This is a great village pub, restaurant, and hotel. The bar is lively, the food was excellent and the room was luxurious. We will definitely stay here again. All the staff were friendly and helpful. We were welcomed and taken to our room without delay. The approach to the bedroom was a bit tired but our room was lovely. Service in the bar was very efficient and our food was served in a timely manner. Breakfast was excellent with lots of choices.
"Fantastic place to stay & eat, so easy to get to from A1, super friendly staff & excellent service. Highly recommend"
Beautiful room & en-suite with amazing water pressure & great shower. We had our dog with us & everything was so easy & welcoming for our 4 legged. Really high quality, well cooked delicious food, great beer & really friendly and relaxed atmosphere. We will definitely be back, couldn't fault our stay & are so glad we found The Black Horse Inn!

"Absolutely fabulous "
Outstanding stay. Great food and staff. Amazing atmosphere. Gets busy on a weekend but food and service does not falter. Room very comfortable and interestingly decorated. Great base to explore Richmond and Bĺedale short drive away. We'll return
"Perfect country Inn, brilliant rooms and fantastic food and staff."
This is the perfect village inn with very well eqipped rooms and dog friendly. It makes the perfect stop over for us when we go to Scotland, or racing in Yorkshire. The food is excellent, great choice and quality as is the excellent wine list, beer selection and gins. The staff are universally excellent. We stayed in the Denman room in the Courtyard Cottage. Beautifully decorated and every amenity and comfy bed. Plenty of room for our dog's bed and a short walk to the village green for execise and bins available. The restaurant is excellent too, but the bar shaves it on atmosphere. Breakfasts fantastic. Will be back again in October.

"Lovely"
The stay overall was enjoyable and definitely will return, I was on a drive from A to B which I do a few times a year so it's definitely handy to find a lovely spot to stay for the night that isn't in a great detour from A1(m). The food was delicious, the service was a little slow and forgetful at times but they were very busy, but that doesn't alter my overall view. We had a good sleep, the room was so lovely, my daughter loved the hot chocolate and Curley Wurleys left in our room, lovely coffee machine, small bathroom with shower. I was a little disappointed that there wasn't a bath. When I had booked it said there would be a bath in the room, so I was looking forward to that after a 6hour drive! The bed was a little hard for my liking, but again I slept well so not too fussed. All in all Hotel set in a lovely small village, and we would return!

"Lovely stay, lovely staff and amazing food "
Just returned from a 2 night stay at this lovely old inn situated in a very pretty hamlet about a 20 minute drive to North Allerton and within easy reach of the market towns of Letburn ,Bedale and Richmond. The staff were all friendly and helpful and the food at both breakfast and in the evening was exceptional.Lovely dining room. Our room was the Milton which is in the ground floor of the annexe which houses 4 bedrooms .The room was lovely ,furnishings and carpets of a high standard, large very comfy bed with good quality linens .The bathroom was huge with a freestanding roll top bath and huge walk-in shower .One minor niggle ,the toilet roll holder was hanging off the wall .The downside of the room in our opinion was that anyone walking past to access any of the other rooms in the annexe could see directly in to our room ,therefore it lacked privacy ,so we had to keep the curtains closed which blocked out the lovely sunshine and also made it very dark warm and stuffy .Maybe the addition of a blind at the window would help .Other than this would have been 5 star review.
Sally Barker, Guest Services / Front Office at Black Horse Inn, responded to this review
Thank you for your review. The Black Horse is perfectly situated for exploring North Yorkshire , and a great stop over for journeys North and South due to our proximity to the A1 . I'm please you enjoyed yourself it stay in our picturesque village . We hope to welcome you back again. Best Wishes from the Black Horse Team.
"Nice Location unfriendly Staff"
The Hotel inn, is in a lovely location. Greeted on arrival by a non smiling member of reception staff not very friendly, found her a bit snotty with an attitude. She had black hair Middle aged not sure of her name as was not advised to us. We also had her as our waitress in the evening needless to say her attitude was still the same no service with a smile. The Room we was put in was not the room as pictured on booking questioned we was told if we would have booked direct with the hotel and not expedia this would not happen. However in this case expedia are false advertising the rooms at your Inn as the room i stayed in is not on your website or Expedias The room itself was dated not what we booked, and needs some attention on the decoration. The walls are very thin and can hear other guests showers and flushing of toilet and TV of a night. The food in the restaurant was ok, however I ordered a special which was Satay Coconut Chicken with Rice, The rice was very dry and not enough sauce for the dish. however the Sticky Toffee pudding was very nice. On check out we was checked out by a member of the breakfast staff and was presented with a Bill for our 2 night stay which we paid on time of booking after looking into this the room was taken back off the bill.
"Camping "

"Excellent food & a good night's sleep"
Great food - my shoulder of lamb really was delicious & my eggs Benedict at breakfast the same. The staff were friendly & my dog was made very welcome. The bed linen was very good quality - beautiful to sleep in and I slept really well ( despite the best efforts of the fan in the bathroom which is on continuously). Netflix, Prime etc wouldn't work due to internet issues locally. Hardly essential. It's a lovely village to visit and very quiet overnight - my ground floor room was right on the road but I heard nothing even with the windows open.
Sally Barker, Guest Services / Front Office at Black Horse Inn, responded to this review
Thank you for your review . Sorry to hear you had an issue with the fan in the bathroom - the switch is located on the outside of the bathroom door to turn this off . We hope to see you and your four legged friend at the Black Horse in the not too distant future . Best Wishes from the Black Horse Team .
"Great Little Gem"
Very warm welcome, helpful hard working staff, felt at home, luxury suite with a french touch attention to detail, food fresh and and delicious, Nothing was too much trouble. Can't recommend enough, 10 out of 10 !!
"Amazing and friendly place"
Such a wonderful place to stay for a few days. The room was stunning and so comfortable, especially welcoming for us and our dog. The food we ate was spectacular both for breakfast and dinner. It was so wonderful to see the restaurant busy on midweek nights, but the quality and service still being as wonderful as when I last visited over 10 years ago!

"Outstanding food and service "
Although we only live about 40 minutes away we hadn't heard of this place. Booked direct through the hotels own website which was a simple process. It's a lovely place in a quaint little village which is tucked away a few miles from the main roads. Staff were friendly on arrival and we had a couple of drinks before being taken to our room which was "Black Bess". Lovely room with a safari setting and a spacious outdoor area with lots of flowers and garden furniture and a patio table. We stayed 2 nights and ate at the hotel both days having breakfast and dinner. The food was outstanding, I chose fillet steak on both evenings which was cooked to perfection, my wife had sirloin steak and fish and chips, the fish was a good size and really chunky. Breakfast on both mornings was excellent, a good choice of cereals pastries etc then a choice of main breakfasts. I had the traditional breakfast both mornings and it was amazing. A thoroughly enjoyable stay.
"Great overnight stay"
We stayed here with the motorhome. Free EHU if you eat. We had dinner and breakfast, and both were superb. Couldn't fault it. Staff were great, and we couldn't have asked for more. Toilets were spotless. Great stay, we will be back that'sfor sure.

"A boutique quality hotel"
After a long drive from east Kent on an icy day we had a very friendly welcome. The hotel should not be thought if as an average rural pub hotel. It is way above that, providing excellent meals at good value in a lovely restaurant. Overall service and comfort was excellent. We would definitely recommend it as a place to stay in this area.

"Great stopover"
Great stopover with our campervan. Lovely restaurant and bar. Liked the evening meal so much we had breakfast the next morning. Staff so helpful and friendly. Couldn't have asked for a nicer break. Northallerton 6--7 miles down the road with a buzzing high street appealing to all tastes. Definitely stop at both places again. Forgot to mention pub is dog friendly. He thought it was great, loads of attention.

"Overnight Stay"
What an excellent find! Travelling in a motorhome, staying at various pubs on our route, we were delighted to find an exceptional welcome at the Black Horse Inn. Not only do they allow you to park overnight providing you are eating with them, they also provide free EHU and an outside water supply, their toilets remain lit and open all night too for their travelling guests. Add to this friendly, helpful staff and a superb meal and you understand why we were so delighted to have discovered this wonderful country pub/restaurant/hotel. We would happily recommend and will definitely return!

"Complete con. Quoted one price, charged another"
Quoted £87 for a dog friendly room when I phoned them directly. Accepted, checked in with dogs, spent a fair sum of money in restaurant at night to support the pub, went to check out following morning and received a bill for £127 and only at that point was I informed that there is a £20 surcharge per dog. I was not made aware of this when I spoke on the phone, and specifically asked for a dog friendly room. Complete con and totally unprofessional.
Sally Barker, Guest Services / Front Office at Black Horse Inn, responded to this review
Dear Sir , I am very sorry to hear that you were disappointed with your stay at The Black Horse . I am surprised that this charge was a surprise to you as you have stayed with us previously. After further investigation into this billing it seems the reservations team were not made aware , at the time of booking , that you had two dogs staying with you . If they had known you would have been advised that there is a charge of £20 per night per dog . We weren't made aware at the time of check in that you had two dogs with you, and they had left a considerable mess ( pets are not allowed on beds or furniture ) which required deep cleaning .
"Wonderful stay with fantastic dining"

"Beautiful wee hotel and restaurant - great for families"
Myself, my husband and our two kids (aged 4 and 8) stayed here when we had a local event. The room was perfect. Beautifully put together, clean and everything in working order. The dvd player and dvds were a nice surprise as was the hot chocolate and the bars of chocolate. The bathroom had a wee tin of sanitary products in case of emergency! We've all been there!! Such lovely wee touches which really made the difference. We ate in the bar and I was so suprised at the quality of the meal we were given. It was honestly one of the best meals I've had in a long time and so reasonably priced too. The chef even wrote down the recipe for their pea salsa as I loved it so much. We were made to feel so welcome. We played draughts and domino's and enjoyed our time with our family without feeling rushed or feeling awkward when our kids made noise or moved around. I've been raving about this place since we left and hope we get the opportunity to stay again. Cannot recommend enough!

"First visit but not the last"
First visit with work colleagues. Had the best prawn cocktail ever for a starter also the cod with risotto was perfect. Generous portions, a varied menu for all dietary requirements. Very pleasant, attentive staff, perfectly cooked & presented food, excellent atmosphere. Would highly recommend & certainly visit again.
"A Gem Of A Place"
We stayed for two nights , our room was comfortable, spacious, clean and well presented The bar and restaurant offered a great selection of tempting food which was promptly served, well cooked and generous in its portions The staff were both friendly and attentive and created a very welcoming atmosphere We recommend the Black Horse and we will be back to further explore the area.
"Weekend break"
What a fabulous find. If you like good service, nice environment and fabulous food then this is the place for you AND the dog can come too. We stayed a couple of nights, every member of staff was warm and welcoming. The room was exceptionally comfortable with everything you need. We ate breakfast and evening meal and all of the food was fabulous. At breakfast we had the best poached and scrambled eggs ever on a full breakfast that sets you up for the rest of the day. Great value for money Warren and Oates
"An amazing stay with fabulous food and warm and welcoming atmosphere."
We booked this at relatively late notice and will definitely be returning. We arrived at 3pm to a hectic but we'll organise pub/restaurant and were welcomed warmly. Seeing the quality of the food going out we booked a table for 7:30pm and went to our room. The room was amazing. Tastefully decorated with some lovely additional touches. Going downstairs later we were again greeted warmly and chatted with staff who were still clearly very busy. It had a lovely country feel with locals and visitors together. The food was amazing. Possibly the best fish I've ever had! We did not stay for breakfast (not sure why in hindsight) but that also looked amazing. We will definitely returning and the cost of the room and food was a bargain really given the quality. Can't wait to go back.

"Wow, Wow, Wow!"
An amazing stay from start to finish; Reception - such a warm and friendly welcome. The Room - Tiger Roll located in the Coach House Cottage next door quirky but very comfortable and clean. The Bar - Great range of beers and wine and excellent service, a taster of the cask ales was provided - always appreciated. The Food - we choose to eat in the bar area, a good choice on the menu. The service and the food was excellent - with the Sirloin being highly recommended. Breakfast - a choice from light continental style to Full English and most things in between and a proper pot of tea in ceramic pot. We would love to praise each member of the team individually but didn't get their names. you were all a credit to yourselves and The Black Horse Inn. We will be back.

"A wonderful hotel and excellent food"
Stayed for 2 nights and ate in the bar/restaurant with nights and food service was excellent. Room was very spacious with a big comfy bed. Perfect for us and our dog who was very welcome in the bar where we ate. We also had breakfast on one day and this was lovely with loads of choice.

"Amazing"
Amazing.. We visit the area once a year for a weekend break with friends, this is the second year we have visited this pub after finding it, the first time being just as amazing as this one. The food is outstanding one of the best Sunday lunches we have had. The staff are fantastic especially the lovely lady with dark hair might be the manager. We already can't wait to visit again next year, shame it's so far away from home.
, Owner at Black Horse Inn, responded to this review
Thank you for your amazing review! As the Manager of the business it is exceptionally rewarding to hear we are performing consistently year in year out. I will share your feedback with the team (especially my colleague Sally) and we await your return with much enthusiasm.
"Somewhere we will definitely return to."
Fantastic stopover at The Black Horse Inn at Kirkby Fleetham in North Yorkshire - DL7 0SH, just off the A1. Landlord and staff were really welcoming and friendly and the food was amazing! Even had a separate vegan menu which made it hard to choose from! Free to stay over including free EHU if you eat in the pub. Also access to toilets overnight as well as there being an outside tap. Not sure about grey waste or toilet disposal as that wasn't something we needed.
, Owner at Black Horse Inn, responded to this review
Thank you for your glowing review. Over the last 12 months we have been delighted to welcome you and your fellow cameraperson. The Black Horse is a very relaxed establishment and i has a very symbiotic relationship with the cameraman fraternity. With immediate accesses to lovely Yorkshire countryside there is easy access to walk dogs as well as to the A1M. We are looking into the grey waste/toilet disposal.... so watch this space.
"Visit to the Dales"

"Training Weekend"
Relaxed Saturday night dinner with my wife after a long day training for the NHS. Very welcoming reception on arrival then taken to nice quiet corner table in a very busy restaurant. Great food and drink admirably looked after by Steve and the team. Went back on the Sunday while my wife was training for a couple of quiet pints and was made to feel like I was at my local.

"Brilliant campervan night at the Black Horse Inn"
This is our second visit and one we will definitely repeat again and again. We were welcomed in our campervan and we had the most amazing visit. Honestly the food was to die for and I know I will feel guilty back at home where the Sunday dinners are just sad in comparison. The place was packed and dogs were made very welcome. The icing on the cake was the fact they kept the loos open all night for us! A massive thanks and an unreserved recommendation.
, Owner at Black Horse Inn, responded to this review
Toilets open all night and free electric hook up if you eat in the pub and no need to book. We are delighted to welcome you back for your second visit and that you had such an amazing stay. Our reputation for Sunday lunch is very good and we really do welcome well behaved dogs. Please do not let the 3rd visit be too far away.
"A Hidden Gem!"
Stayed here as a family group the night before a Passing Off Parade at Catterick. 15 mins car drive away, so really well located for the Barracks. Stayed in Family room, twin rooms and the four poster room - all of them were different but lovely in their own way. Decor. fixtures and fittings were high quality, lots of nice touches, a lot of thought, time and money has been spent here. Staff were really friendly, approachable and helpful. Restaurant food delicious, as was the breakfast. Lots of parking and nice atmosphere in the bar. Great value for money too. Would definitely recommend and come back!

"Little Gem"
Looking for a weekend away and found this place on a website (not Trip Advisor). What a find. Ideal base for Herriot Country. Peaceful little village. Staff were excellent. Polite and friendly. Room (Shergar) was clean and comfy, with mini fridge/pod coffee machine/kettle/iron. Bathroom was top grade. Ate in the restaurant in the evening. Good food, great staff and a warm & friendly atmosphere. Breakfast was a civilised 9am-10am and has a great choice (I had the full English, the wife had the kippers). Dog friendly. Will definitely be going back

"The best Sunday lunch ever!"
Beautiful country pub/hotel with a warm welcome, open fires and fantastic food. We came for Sunday lunch as we were in the area in our motorhome and oh my, I would travel back in a heartbeat just for the food!! It was quite simply stunning! Roast beef cooked perfectly pink with all the trimmings. Everything was perfectly executed and tasted amazing! Very busy place and lots of repeat custom (I can see why!). Give it a go, you will not be disappointed I guarantee! We will be back :)

We also have a large flat car park where we welcome campervans/motorhomes. Next time come and treat yourself to a stop over and sample our evening meal. The monk fish scampi is delicious..
"A hidden gem, probably only experienced by those that got lost. "
What a magnificent hidden gem. Well off the the main trail, is this wonderful welcoming gastro pub, hotel. The staff were friendly and pleasant. The grounds and room clean. The bed comfortable. The food is on a different level, way beyond expection, from the varied menu, quality and presentation of the food, to a complimentary wine selection that's actually been tasted and selected rather than just added. The food was so good you want to pay the bill, an appreciation of the work and talant, with no consideration you could do better yourself. Highly recommended.

Thank you for your glowing review. Its is posted on the staff notice board for everyone to enjoy. for we can only receive reviews like this due to the team effort. It makes me smile when you comment we are well off the main trail. "What a lovely place"
Bought as a 40th gift from my work to tie in with some gin tasting. Amazing friendly hosts who made you feel completely welcome at home, fabulous food and we loved our cosy room looking over the fields at the back. What a lovely place! Five stars from us! Thank you for a relaxing night away. Ps: defo do the gin tasting @ Masons - that was a great afternoon well spent and very interesting!

"Another enjoyable stay at a wonderful venue"
Another fabulous stay at our favourite Inn in North Yorkshire, this time we came with our two dogs. Although we were worried how the dogs would behave the suite we were given put the dogs at ease immediately we arrived. We had our own access to a private garden which was a godsend. Although we couldn't dine in the restaurant we were able to sit with the dogs in the bar and enjoy the lovely food we have become accustomed to on each of our visits ( our third visit in 12 months). The staff are so attentive and the food and accommodation are superb.

It was lovely to meet you and your dogs and we are pleased that you enjoyed your stay in our Shergar room. Due to is size and location is very popular with dog owners Glad your found our food up to its usual standard and we look forward to your fourth visit of the year in the not so distant future.
"FANTASTIC!!!!"
I stayed here on a Friday night as part of a wedding party. The staff were great, especially the female manager. She went above and beyond. Nothing was too much trouble. We all had rooms together on the top floor. We had hair and make up arriving early, the manager brought lattes to our room and set out a separate table for us in the bar so that we could take it in turns having breakfast in between having our hair and make up done. I stayed in a different room with my husband on the Saturday night. Both rooms I stayed in were spacious but still warm and cosy, they were delightfully furnished with rustic furniture and personal touches. I was able to tailor the breakfast on both mornings to what I wanted. The meat was delicious, far better than what you buy at the supermarket. The evening menu has a varied range of meal choices that are not run of the mill meals. We had clean plates all round. The staff are welcoming and attentive. We were very much looked after and we will definitely be returning and recommending The Black Horse Inn to others!

"Lovely"
Stayed one night on way back from Durham and would highly recommend. The rooms are lovely with a stand alone bath in the room and very nicely done. The staff efficient - checking in and out was very easy. The breakfast was perfect with fresh local food well prepared. Also the bar is brilliant.

Thank you for your lovely review. We do not aim to be anything fancy but we do aim to offer good local hospitality enabling our guests to have a simple relaxed stay. So pleased you enjoyed your stay and we look forward to welcoming you back soon.
"Beautiful rooms"
Great staff, stunning rooms with excellent facilities. Luxurious feel to the room, little touches made it feel really homely, and the bed was super comfy. The orange juice and milk in the fridge was a nice touch, i jus5 wish I drank coffee to try the super looking coffee machine! The chef needs to learn how to make decent scrambled eggs though….
, Owner at Black Horse Inn, responded to this review
Thank you for your review. The Team here works really hard to give customers the home from home experience and it is great when our efforts are noted. Thank you also for the feedback regarding the scrambled egg I shall share this with the Chefs as this is a very unusual problem for us. We look forward to welcoming you back soon.

"Fantastic Hotel"
We booked for an overnight stay at the Black Horse Inn, as a treat for my husbands birthday on Saturday night. We were 2 couples and had an overnight stay & dinner booked. We booked the room with the four poster bed, and it was absolutely beautiful. The bed was huge & very comfortable, and there were lovely homely added features throughout. The attention to detail was amazing, with both a kettle and a coffee machine in the room, along with wine glasses in case you wanted a tipple in the room, which we appreciated. There was also a stocked fridge with milk and orange juice, in the communal laundry room, which had a washing machine, tumble dryer, iron and ironing board. The staff were lovely, and very helpful, especially considering how busy they were. We had a table booked for dinner at 8pm, in the beautiful dining room, which was beautifully furnished, with huge comfortable seats, and a generous sized table. The 3 meat eaters had the most amazing meal, which both looked & apparently tasted delicious. I am Vegan, and unfortunately I hate to say it, but the vegan menu needs work. It was very mushroom heavy, and when the meal came, it very much felt like it was just thrown together as an afterthought, without the care and attention to detail of the non vegan meals. The sauce from the mushroom starter was missing, and the gnocchi was slimy & had half a bag of peas thrown on to it. While I very much appreciate that a vegan menu was available, as this isn't always the case, unfortunately it was very much lacking in choice, flavour & execution, which was disappointing. I would go back again for food, but I would likely order some of the meat options, just minus the meat. I do understand that vegan options can be tricky though, but it might be an idea for the chef to consult a Vegan person when compiling the menu in future. The breakfast was amazing, and the staff accommodated me by making me an oat milk latte, which was yummy. The option of vegan butter for the toast would be a good addition, as unfortunately they didn't have any, but that's not a huge deal. All in all, we had an amazing time, in a beautiful hotel, with amazing staff, who went above and beyond, and we would definitely go back to stay again. Thank you so much from the Youngs & the Mills.

"Badly Maintained Room but Excellent Restaurant"
Staying with our friends to celebrate their Ruby Anniversary. We have stayed before and at Christmas. Everything went wrong from the moment we arrived. Rude male member of staff. Wrong room allocated. No acknowledgement that we were celebrating a special occasion. Dined in the restaurant (which we have done on many occasions), still very good. Restaurant excellent. Our room however, awful! Obviously the owners have spent money renovating other areas to the detriment of rooms. Couldn't use wardrobe as used for storage Badly stained walls Badly stained curtain Outside chair broken Outside woodwork falling to pieces The worst thing is I received an automatic feedback email when we checked out which I responded to with only a mild apology! I also received an automatic email from the hotel manager asking for feedback which I responded to over a week ago and got no reply to. I am unfortunately now having to post this bad review
, Owner at Black Horse Inn, responded to this review
Thank you for your review. We take all feedback very seriously and will follow up on your comments. The room you were in is scheduled for a full refurbishment this winter and this is on a planned rolling schedule. I apologies for the excessive emails and I will follow up with the front of house team about your room allocation.
"Super rural Stay"
A lovely typical North Yorkshire pub with lovely staff. Great dining facilities and an above average menu all very well cooked and presented. Stayed for a couple of nights in the adjoining house in two different rooms. The small double is cosy. If staying there you will only have room for an overnight bag as clothes storage is a minimum. Still very comfy though. Although it's not near anywhere it is still popular. Note to kitchen - the breakfasts were delicious but the skins on the sausages were really tough. Whilst on the subject of breakfast , I do not like music being played to me first thing in the morning. You are in the country in a nice setting and would much prefer it if you let natural conversation and the atmosphere take hold. Music is a very personal thing and it all matters what it is and when it is played. Pop songs at breakfast is not me.
, Owner at Black Horse Inn, responded to this review
Thank you for your feedback. The Black Horse is very lucky to have such a brilliant location in Kirkby Fleetham. Our head chef is looking at sourcing different sausages on the back of your feedback. We look forward to welcoming you back soon.
"Lovely food and staff"
We stayed here for 2 nights while visiting family in the area. The place is in a lovely village and all the staff were really nice and helpful. There was some confusion over our evening restaurant reservation that was sorted by the lovely lady that checked us in. The evening meal was excellent and good value, the breakfast was also very nice. The interior of the place was nicely done but some expenditure is going to be needed on the exterior especially the windows and doors. Our second nights sleep was spoiled by a noisy group in the room above, but this can't be blamed on the hotel .
, Owner at Black Horse Inn, responded to this review
Dear Sir Thank you for your candid review. We are in the process of having a major refurbishment and appreciate your constructive feedback. The Black Horse Team is very grateful for your custom and we look forward to welcoming you back soon.
"Great stay"
An excellent find, room was huge, staff exceptional, nothing was too much trouble. We travelled with our dog and was given a ground floor room with a door into a garden. Little things like chocolate in the room and orange juice in the fridge, make such a difference. We ate in the restaurant and the menu was superb, it was busy but plenty of staff on duty. I really can't fault this hotel.
, Owner at Black Horse Inn, responded to this review
Many thanks for your great review. We are delighted you and your dogs enjoyed your stay with us and nnd that you appreciated all the extras we like tio surprise our guests with.
"Stopover"
A lovely place to stop over (in the family suite) with my daughter and two young grandchildren. Friends came from nearby Darlington to join us for dinner which was excellent. Only two small ‘complaints'; cooked breakfast items were rather dry and would have been better freshly prepared. However we were rather late in getting to the breakfast room. The DVDs for the children need to be checked; some are scratched and either unplayable or froze. Hosts were welcoming and friendly,
Rosie Bell, Guest Services / Front Office at Black Horse Inn, responded to this review
Thank you for your review. The Black Horse has a great location for a stopover between London and Scotland. So pleased you and your friends enjoyed your meal with us. We are always grateful for feedback. I shall replace the DVDs in the family room and follow up about your breakfast feedback.
"Fantastic stay"
Stayed in the family room en route to Alnwick. Dined in the restaurant too. Warm welcome on arrival and very comfortable and spacious room. Dinner was magnificent with an excellent range of choice including vegan options for my wife. Service was attentive and friendly. Good breakfast too. Couldn't fault it and would wholeheartedly recommend the Black Horse.

"Great place definitely worth a visit"
Only stayed for one night attending a wedding locally. We arrived late on the 10th Aug and were shown to our room Niginsky in the adjacent Coach house, the room was exactly as the pictures the attention to detail was extremely good welcome tray and cold water and fresh orange in kitchen on the landing was a nice touch. The Breakfast was without doubt the best we have had in a long time great choice on the cooked also fresh fruit and continental. I have been trying to put a review on Booking. Com since my return but have not been able due to a odd issue on there web site. It is a shame that you can not leave a private message to the owners on this site.

Thank you for your review. Rest assured the owners are very grateful for the time you have taken to share your experience of our hotel with the general public. We are delighted you enjoyed your stay. and that you especially enjoyed our breakfast.....we are very proud of it.
"Excellent as always"
Been here to stay and for meals on many occasions. This place never disappoints, Steve the landlord gives people a great experience both with the accommodation and with the eating and drinking offerings. Do yourselves a favour and if you are in strike distance of this place have a night's stay here, with evening dining and drinks on offer, a fabulous quirky room and a breakfast you will not forget, you will find this a treat. Oh and the village is pretty special too !!! Steve's staff are pretty special too, all welcoming and friendly. Can't wait to return.

"Great Food, perfect place for birthday celebration"
Staying in Richmond for my Mums birthday, and here was the perfect choice. Dog friendly, great food, service and lovely village location. I contacted to see if we could be accommodated, communication and service were excellent. There was 8 of us plus puppy, we were seated in the bar area, but almost a separate room. Service was excellent throughout. Everyone enjoyed their food, and staff were happy to bring through cake we had bought, giving us a plates, a knife and cutlery. The food throughout was also excellent, highly recommended. Thank you.
Rosie Bell, Guest Services / Front Office at Black Horse Inn, responded to this review
Many thanks for your kind review. We are really pleased you had a great meal and the team here ensured your celebrations went well. Our private dinning room is a cracking venue for a large group to celebrate a special occasion. We hope it is not too long before we welcome you back again.
"Chefs a predator"
This man will cook your food at the black horse he stares at the children whilst they are eating there dinner feels very strange going nest there now never mind inside the pub like what other people do they have working there
"Birthday celebration"
Celebrated a big birthday at The Black Horse on 19th July. The venue was perfect. The food was superb. Stephen, Sally and the staff couldn't do enough for us. Thank you to everyone for making the night so special.

Thank you for your kind words. Delighted your celebration went well. I will share your feedback with the team.
"Is there a better place to eat and stay in North Yorkshire "
Everything in this establishment is just cracking. The food, the rooms and staff with a stunning location. The food was an absolute winner though. Both me and my wife chose Scallops with a crusty cheese topping to start. We both again had the roast rump of lamb which was perfection in every way. To finish my good lady plumbed for a cheese board and she could choose which cheeses she wanted. But for me I took a bit of a gamble and I had blackened Tai rice pudding , flavoured with coconut, mango and lychee's. Although the description of this and even the presentation of it might put customers off my advice is go for it if you like rice pudding, you won't be disappointed as it was just about the nicest thing to ever pass over my taste buds. All in all a 10/10 hotel every time for everything,we couldn't find fault at all.
Rosie Bell, Guest Services / Front Office at Black Horse Inn, responded to this review
Thank you for your glowing 10/10 review.I have shared it with the whole team who are delighted. My Head Chef is particularly chuffed as he specializes in Thai dishes and the black pudding was his creation.
"Full of Character and quality, a perfect stay"
The superb food, the wonderful room full of character, and the fantastic service all the way through the weekend made this a lovely anniversary stay, I couldn't recommend it enough. Well worth a visit

"Overnight"
Stopped overnight before travelling on to a break in the Cairngorms Cracking little find made all the more better by being dog friendly and being so close to the main route. Would definitely revisit again.
"Great food, nice people"
Came here for my Grandad's 30th birthday, had a great time all round. I ordered the lobster thermidor. Little bit spicy but good nonetheless. Thought the atmosphere was atmospheric and the service was exquisite. Sadly my mother died the following day but that was unrelated to my fantastic dining experience here. just felt like i need someone to talk to. its been lonely. Want to give a special shoutout to Craig for the brilliant service. As my mother was dying she spoke fondly of him. Thanks for making one of her final days decent.
Rosie Bell, Guest Services / Front Office at Black Horse Inn, responded to this review
We are sorry to hear about your mother but are pleased we were privileged enough to entertain her in her final days. Thank you for your review.
"Great meal and ambience"
Meet a group of friends for Sunday lunch - the first time we had been able to get together since before COVID. Great food and good service. We had a small side room with just us and there was no pressure to vacate. We ate and gossiped for ages! Dog friendly.
Rosie Bell, Guest Services / Front Office at Black Horse Inn, responded to this review
So pleased you enjoyed your meal with us. We are very lucky to be able to gather again post covid. So much news to catch up on ! Dogs are very much welcome here and being a country pub we have lots of space to accommodate them.Hope to9 welcome you all back soon.
"Outstanding food"
Wow just wow. We came for Sunday lunch and was blown away with the quality of food and the amazing service. What a lovely place to eat. The Sunday roast menu is 2 or 3 courses, god knows how anyone eats 3 courses because the portion sizes are very generous. I would have been happy with a bucket of their hispy cabbage and dark rich gravy.
Rosie Bell, Guest Services / Front Office at Black Horse Inn, responded to this review
Wow thank you for your cracking review. We are delighted that you like so many others really enjoyed our Sunday roast.. We look forward to your next visit.
"Wonderful break from A1 long journey near Northallerton turn off."
If you have a long distance journey planned using the A1 do consider giving yourself a delightful mini holiday. We stayed only one night but restorative effect was worth far more. Our Red Rum room was large and comfortable, the restaurant for dinner and breakfast really good, there was a wide choice of areas to sit and relax both inside and outside, and the little rural village was good for a stroll.
Rosie Bell, Guest Services / Front Office at Black Horse Inn, responded to this review
Thank you for your review. We are very lucky to have such an ideal location (10 minutes from the Scotch corner junction on the A!). I think last week 40% of our guests were breaking their journey on an Anglo Scottish holiday/visit.. I am delighted your stay with us was restorative and that you have a very special long awaited holiday. The forecast is looking very optimistic.
"Most comfortable bed ever, and wonderful food"
Most hotel rooms have awful beds - you know the sort of thing, rock hard mattresses and pillows the same size, weight and comfort rating of the average sandbag. Not so at the Black Horse - a wonderfully firm/soft mattress and lush pillows you can plump up to your own requirements. The atmosphere in the restaurant is perfect and is matched by the quality of the food - I recommend the scallops and rump of lamb. A decent wine list and always good to see Peroni on tap, too. Breakfast is a treat - a real olde worlde affair of quality ingredients. Nice to see little touches like being asked what sauces you would like when you order and which are then immediately delivered to your table - in lovely little pots, In most places these days, sauces arrive in the dreaded sachets and about ten minutes after you've started eating. Overall, a really lovely place for a short break. And it's so lovely and quiet - in the middle of nowhere.
Rosie Bell, Guest Services / Front Office at Black Horse Inn, responded to this review
Thank your for your cracking review. The whole teams strives to ensure our guests are comfortable and well looked after during their stays with us and it is always the icing on the cake when we receive reviews like this. Mattress and pillow firmness is very personal but we receive a lot of positive feedback from our guests about ours. We will keep the Peroni flowing and we look forward top welcoming you back soon.
"Lovely food, but a few disappointing bits"
On the whole enjoyed our stay at the Black Horse Inn and had some very nice food in the restaurant, but just a couple of niggles that were a bit disappointing. The room we stayed in was a great size and had a good selection of tea / coffee etc. and the curly wurly was a nice touch. However, the rooms are advertised as 5 star on the website, but the room felt a little tired and in need of some re-decoration, there were a few cobwebs and collections of dust on skirting boards and a fair amount of mold on the bathroom silicone in the shower area. Appreciate that it can be very hard to clean that sort of thing, but it detracts from the 5 star rating when the bathroom feels a bit grubby. Unfortunately also didn't have a great nights sleep as the fridge in the room was very noisy and kept banging / gurgling randomly through the night waking us up and the sun was very bright at 4.30am. Would definitely benefit from additional blinds / thicker curtains in the rooms. Then at 7am movement from guests in other rooms was a bit disruptive. On the plus side, everyone was friendly and helpful and the food in the restaurant was very good and of a very high standard which went a long way to add to our enjoyment, but I think for the price etc. the rooms just need a little attention to improve the look and sleep quality to be able to bring the rating above average.
Rosie Bell, Guest Services / Front Office at Black Horse Inn, responded to this review
Thank you for your review. We are always very grateful for your feedback and we will use it constructively.. I am delighted you enjoyed your meal and found the staff friendly and helpful.
"Superb"
Welcoming and informative. Lovely accommodation with everything you need. Beautiful surroundings. Seriously good food, interesting menu and excellent service. We felt very welcome and intend to go back soon
"Sub standard food "
Sliced beef baguettes ordered Served with dark brown fluid in gravey boat... Not sure what it was tasted like browning? Beef was grizzly and could not be bitten through with teeth .. Might need sharpening. Waitress was informed of our findings and said sorry and removed our plates...... No replacement... Think we wasted our time with this visit and left dissatisfied.
Rosie Bell, Guest Services / Front Office at Black Horse Inn, responded to this review
Thank you for your feedback. Our hot meat sandwich is incredibly popular with our dinners so we are very disappointed to learn that you did not enjoy your meal with us. Steve Barker our General Manager would really like to discuss your experience with you as being sub standard is definitely what we aspire to be here at the Black Horse. His mobile number is 07551 602866 and he would really appreciate talking to you.
"Rubbish Staff naff Food"
Location great , Food Rubbish , Staff Worse, Landlady (i think )or staff do not listen to customers needs, too forth right and talks over you Were not to made to feel welcome in unfamiliar surrounds, shoved in a corner and almost a pain to them . Food not good too much of it and not cooked well.
Rosie Bell, Guest Services / Front Office at Black Horse Inn, responded to this review
Thank you for your feedback. We take all feedback very seriously especially as we always ask before guests leave if they have enjoyed their meal. As you can see from other reviews your experience is very unusual for the Black Horse. The General Manager Stephen Barker would really like to discuss your experience with you him. His direct line number is 07551 602866. He is awaiting your call.
"Excellent value for money"
We required a place to stay for the night due to accommodation limitations with our work. We first discovered the very big car park which was ideal for our hire van. We had booked online on the trip down, on arrival we were personally shown to our rooms. The rooms were very nice. Bathtub in each room near the window. Hot chocolate, tea, coffee and a coffee machine are all provided which is a very nice touch. Shower gel, shampoo, body lotion and soap (bars and liquid hand gel) are all available in the bathroom along with multiple towels. The design and aesthetic of the room was very nice yet functional. There was a mini-fridge in the room with a bottle of water, which I would never expect for the price so was rather impressed. The only downside I experienced was a motor clicking on every so often, perhaps the fridge, but I am a very light sleeper so would probably not bother most people. We did not eat at the restaurant but the food we seen other customers order looked and smelled very good. The bar has a decent selection of drinks, we found the Peroni to be rather pricy but the cider on tap was excellent and much better value.
Rosie Bell, Guest Services / Front Office at Black Horse Inn, responded to this review
Thank you for your review. So pleased you enjoyed your stay with us. Next time we hope you are able to sample the delights of our food.
"Great Yorkshire Breakfast!"
Worth staying just for the breakfast! That said the room was well equipped more for a family than for a single persons business trip! Nice touch with the “curly wurly!” Took me back 40 plus years….. Will be returning for business and pleasure and ideal as a staging post from North to South. I also plan to stop with my VW California for an overnight in the car park enjoying evening meal and the fantastic breakfast!
Rosie Bell, Guest Services / Front Office at Black Horse Inn, responded to this review
Our breakfast offer is very special and we are very proud of our Yorkshire Provenance especially our homemade pudding. We look forward to welcoming you back and are confident that you will be leaving us a 5/5 rating on your next visit.
"Simply amazing in every way!"
Not having been in England for a few years, we decided we would do a road trip to see family and friends in the UK. We booked here for one night and we wish we'd booked for a month. Everything is excellent. The hosts and staff are so welcoming it's like being home. The facilities are excellent, clean and comfortable. It is way better than the description and ratings, and they are rated excellent I should say! We are staying here on B&B, but booked dinner for four people this evening, just wow! The food and service is exemplary, way beyond your usual Inn stay and more 5* hotel. We are looking forward to breakfast already! A special mention should go to Rose, what a star of the hospitality trade. Service industry staff should come and take lessons from her! A real ambassador (es) for the hospitality industry.
Rosie Bell, Guest Services / Front Office at Black Horse Inn, responded to this review
I was told by my Granny that one should always accept a compliment gracefully. Thank you for your amazing review- it is reviews like this that make all the hard work seem so worth while. Enjoy the rest of your trip to the UK.
"Fabulous Birthday Weekend"
We booked here for my birthday weekend away, never having been to Kirkby Fleetham before and couldn't have been happier with our choice. Our room was in the fabulously quirky coach house a couple of doors away from the pub, which suited us perfectly. All of the staff in the pub couldn't have been more friendly and accommodating and managed to squeeze us in both nights for a meal even when the pub was really busy. The food was delicious with a great menu for my partner. The only disappointment for me, was that there was only one gluten free starter, two mains and no desserts at all that I could eat off the menu as I am coeliac. Not a lot of choice so I didn't have any starters or desserts that weekend. The staff were, however, knowledgeable about cross contamination in the kitchen and the meal that I chose for both nights ( ribs, coleslaw and fries) was gloriously gluten free and the fries were cooked in a separate fryer. The room in the coach house was both well equipped, with a kettle, coffee machine and extremely comfortable. I loved the little touches such as the china mugs, curly wurlys, bowl of sweets and the tin of ‘essentials' in the bathroom. Breakfast was delicious, reasonably priced and I was offered gluten free alternatives without being made to feel awful for asking. All in all, a great weekend and we would definitely return for another stay.

Many thanks for your constructive feedback about your birthday stay with us. We look forward to your next visit.
"Fantastic Stay "
Last minute stay and very glad we did. We ended up staying 2 nights. Food was exceptional and very good value for money. Breakfast was excellent with a great choice Staff were exceptional especially Graham and the barman who couldn't do enough. We stayed with our dog Trixie and everything was dog friendly. Will definitely stay again
Rosie Bell, Guest Services / Front Office at Black Horse Inn, responded to this review
So pleased that you and Trixie enjoyed your stay. We are a very dog friendly location. I shall pass your comments on to Graham and Mark. They are consummate professionals and take immense pride in looking after our guests. We very much look forward to your next stay...
"Outstanding"
Without a doubt one of the nicest ever stays in a pub B&B. Reception couldn't have been more welcoming. The bedroom a wow moment when we walk in the door and even bigger wow for the bathroom. So many little extra touches not needed but so nice to find ( hot chocolate sachet and a curly whirly in a mug, boiled sweets in a dish, fresh orange juice in a fridge, bottled water in it too, hygiene products in the bathroom to name but a few) Our meals on both nights were superb. Breakfast had many choices of cooked food as well as all the regular cereals toasts & croissants. All our waiting staff were polite and friendly. If it weren't hundreds of miles away this would be my go to to eat regularly. Worth every penny to stay here.
Rosie Bell, Guest Services / Front Office at Black Horse Inn, responded to this review
It is not very often I am speechless but I am at a loss on how to reply to your OUTSTANDING review............thank you!. Receiving reviews like this make everything worthwhile. We cannot wait to welcome you back soon.
"Fantastic Easter Break"
Just had a wonderful Easter weekend at Black Horse Inn Steve his wife and team do an amazing job its really relaxed but on the ball with nothing to much trouble. The food is of very high quality with a good choice so we didn't get bored with the menu we had four nights and couldn't wait to get in each evening to try something new we absolutely loved it thanks to the chef and his team. The village wonderful with large greens to walk around and well located for visiting all the market towns you could wish for. Well done and thank you Linda & David
Rosie Bell, Guest Services / Front Office at Black Horse Inn, responded to this review
Thank you for your fantastic review. Steve and the team are passionate in ensuring our guests have a great stay. We are incredibly lucky to have such a talented team in the kitchen who take such pride in producing such a tempting and interesting menu for our guests. Kirkby Fleetham is a very well located village and provides immense scope which is why it is such a popular short break location.
"Weekend break"
Lovely hotel in a beautiful location. Everything dog friendly as well so our cavapoo had the run of the place! Our room was Dawn Run, which is in the separate building next to the pub and was very spacious. Plenty of room for all of our things and lovely and warm. We could hear other people in the room next to us at times, so the soundproofing isn't great, but it's an old building so this is understandable. Breakfast is amazing, the lovely lady working at the time couldn't do enough for us. We booked dinner for the Saturday night and because we had our pooch we're sat at the bar. This was fine until it got busier, and we had a lot of people standing right up against our table whilst we were eating which wasn't ideal. The food was delicious, only complaint was the sorbet my partner had for dessert which was advertised as a ‘selection' but was just the same flavour, and the flavour was horrible. Still not sure what it was and the waiter didn't know. My sticky toffee pudding was amazing though. Little niggles like getting a bottle of water for the table but then not having glasses with ice and having to ask we're slightly annoying but not the end of the world. All if the staff were lovely, if you want a chilled time away in a lovely cozy room with delicious food, then I would definitely recommend.

Glad you enjoyed your weekend break with us. Thank you for your feedback we have taken action already to remedy the points raised. I have passed your feedback to the staff and we look forward to welcoming you back.
"Nice village pub/hotel - worth a visit"
A very pleasant little hotel with a lively and friendly bar and restaurant attached. Rooms are pleasant with nice touches including some tea (yorkshire), coffee and chocolates. The room I stayed in was in an adjoining area. The shower was snug but did everything you wanted. Service was friendly but perhaps a little brusque - I don't get to Yorkshire that often and maybe that's the way but I think not. Breakfast was very tasty and with good options. Overall would stay again. Local area was nice

Many thanks for your review. Delighted you enjoyed your stay with us and that you appreciated our friendly service. Breakfast is very popular here at the Black Horse.......the home made black pudding is out of this world.
"Escape"
Had a wonderful overnight stay here we wanted to get away and just relax and this was a great place to do this . Had a lovely meal on the night although we booked we were asked to sit in the bar and ended up staying there to eat , I recommend the scotch egg starter it was delicious and the scampi was very filling so much that I couldn't fit dessert in , the bar staff were very friendly and accommodating and our room was perfect , loved the names on rooms and little touches like the curly wurly :) we couldn't fill in the feed back book as we had no pen which was a shame ! Will definitely return .

Thank you for providing such a positive review about your stay with us. Following the events of the last two years we have hosted many guests who have like you just wanted to escape! Pleased you enjoyed our Black Pudding Scotch Egg.....it really is a work of art and fully deserves our title of best seller. We take immense pride in our home made black pudding which takes pride of place on our full Yorkshire breakfast. We look forward to welcoming you back when you next need to escape.
"Amazing quaint northern stay"
This was a business stay but I decided to bring my dog along and what an amazing stay. The bar and restaurant is dog friendly and staff couldn't do more for us. The hotel is lovely and quiet but there's still plenty around. There a walking trail just behind and soooo much garden seating, that's heated too. The rooms are finished to an immaculate standard and the small details make the Black Horse Inn stand out. This include a little toiletry set with a ladies box and also hot chocolates with curlywurly's. It's the small details that made this stay!! I'm so glad I spotted this hotel and I can't wait to get back. Thank you to all the staff, your doing an amazing job!

So pleased you found us and that you and your dog enjoyed your stay. With our quaint country village location we are a very popular destination for those looking for a quiet Yorkshire night away (with or without dogs). I will share your feedback with the team here and we look forward to welcoming you back soon.
"Perfect stay"
Wonderfully relaxing two night stay. Beautiful room and exceptional food. Exceeded expectations and can't wait to return. Highly recommend the Duck and the arctic roll. Good quality well cooked breakfast and welcoming hosts. The roll top bath in the room was a treat.
Rosie Bell, Guest Services / Front Office at Black Horse Inn, responded to this review
As I mature in life i have learnt that expectations are dangerous. Some years ago I made a really good friend and his mantra is always lower your expectations.....where is this going????? So it is always a real treat when your expectations are exceeded and I am thrilled that is what you experienced during your stay with us. The roll topped baths are very popular with our guests especially in the winter months.. Thank you for your review and for your food recommendations.....hurry back to sample some more of our delights.
"Food"
I don't often write reviews but I've just had one of if not the best meal I've every had! Black pudding scotch egg starter, apple glacéd pork tomahawk steak, and a white chocolate and raspberry panacotta! And all my friend meals were outstanding
Rosie Bell, Guest Services / Front Office at Black Horse Inn, responded to this review
Thank you for taking the time out to write this glowing review. I have copied it and posted it in the kitchens....the chefs are delighted. The scotch egg is our best selling item. It really is a masterpiece... our guests are very lucky as the homemade black pudding is world class (in my humble opinion and many many customers too!)
"Fantastic stay"
I stayed here as a lone traveller. The staff were so welcoming and made sure I had everything I needed. The room was beautiful with a slipper bath in the main bedroom and a separate shower room Excellent food and a breakfast hamper left outside my door as I was leaving before breakfast was served. Will definitely be back.
Rosie Bell, Guest Services / Front Office at Black Horse Inn, responded to this review
Our proximity at the top end of Yorkshire, 10 minutes from Scotch Corner makes us an ideal stop off for both leisure and business customers. Being a small family run hotel we do offer a home from home experience which makes us very popular with lone travelers. There is always someone looking for a natter which lends for a friendly atmosphere. We look forward to welcoming you back when you are next in the area.
"Our 'Go to'place!"
This is our 'go to' place, only about 45 minutes from home and always a warm welcome and friendly faces! We took friends with us this time and two dogs, we spent a great sunday afternoon in the bar having 'pre dinner drinks' and then had a beautiful roast dinner! The rooms as always clean and tidy and lovely comfortable beds and big bath towels!!! Breakfast this morning as good as ever, we will return again soon! Thanks again guys, particularly Steve, Mark and Graham, always a laugh!!!
Rosie Bell, Guest Services / Front Office at Black Horse Inn, responded to this review
Thank you for the cracking review. It is always good to welcome back familiar faces and their four legged friends to. I will share you review with the whole team - especially Mark, Graham and Steve who will take great pride in their recognition. Dont leave it too long please until we see you again.
"A hidden gem"
Having never stayed in the area before I had looked at many hotels before booking the Black Horse Inn. The website gallery of the hotel looked lovely, as did the rooms and restaurant menu. More importantly, the reviews on TripAdvisor were excellent, not to mention the hotel rate being very reasonable. On arrival we were not disappointed. The reception and bar staff were very welcoming and friendly. Our room was lovely and had some nice added touches to it and a very comfortable bed. Dinner was delicious and the cocktails amazing! We were only there for one night but I'd have happily stayed longer. If I'm ever needing a hotel in the area again it will definitely be my go to!
Rosie Bell, Guest Services / Front Office at Black Horse Inn, responded to this review
We often get refereed to as a hidden gem.....thank you. Delighted you chose the Black Horse for your stay in the area and that we clearly exceeded your expectations. Our cocktails are really popular with guests....especially the espresso and pornstar martinis! Please do not leave it too long before you return and sample some more..
"Weekend Visit"
Just had two nights at the Black Horse and I have to say that it met every expectation. The room was excellent as were the staff. The owner even pulled out all the stops so a few of us could watch the rugby, bringing a tv down to the bar and setting it up for us. We had two evening meals, two breakfasts, and a Sunday lunch and have to say that every meal was absolutely spot on, this place has some good chefs. Book though as the restaurant gets busy. Bar area was also pleasant with good bar staff. The only fault I found was the shower in our room wasn't great however this does not knock their score down. Would I stay here again, absolutely. The restaurant definitely worth a revisit, overall, really nice stay.

Many thanks for your cracking review. We are very blessed with our team here both front and back of house and really look forward to welcoming you back again soon.
"Fantastic in every way"
Had a fabulous stay . Everything was amazing from start to finish . Staff were lovely, helpful and friendly .. had oysters & ‘picky platter' while we watched the rugby. Platter was delicious with home made game terrine, hummus , pickles , flatbread, etc … 3 course meal later on .. absolutely fabulous , service brilliant .. had a good craic with waiter … cheese soufflé was Devine . As was the monkfish scampi … The Room again was gorgeous. Decor was Devine ..warm & cosy , comfy bed , soft pillows , beautiful white bedding .. could not fault it . Fluffy white towels in a lovely clean bathroom . Next morning breakfast was again delicious .. with home made black pudding ! We will definitely be returning as we all had such a lovely experience & made to feel so welcome . Thanks again

Thank you for sharing your fabulous experience with Tripadvisor. The Black Horse Team work very hard to create a unique experience for our guests and we take great delight in reading your glowing reviews. Thrilled you enjoyed the homemade black pudding. it is so popular - we serve it as a scotch egg on our evening menu and it is without doubt our best selling item on the menu. You must try it when you next visit.
"Fantastic night stay with dinner."
Stayed for a night on the 3rd of February and also had dinner in the restaurant. Breakfast also booked. Fantastic place to visit, everything and everyone was so nice and pleasant. The food is exceptional and the rooms are very warm and welcoming. All facilities including the car park are very good. We will definitely stay here again. Many thanks Andrew & Michelle.

Thank you for your review. Our aim is to offer a home from home experience for our guests so they have a great visit and cannot wait to book again. Job done in your case! Look forward to seeing you again soon.
"Comfortable room and great food"
We stayed one night at the Black Horse on our way up to Scotland and it was a great find. Our room was in the house two doors up from the main pub building, so was away from any pub noise. We were on the ground floor, so had a bit of creaking from above as people walked around and a little noise as some night owls came in through the front door, but otherwise it was a good night's sleep. There were lots of nice little touches in the room, my only suggestion would be that it would have been good to have some kind of thin blind on the window so we could have privacy without needing to have the main blinds down and the lights on during the day. The food in the restaurant for dinner was excellent and all the staff were really friendly, but we were a little disappointed that breakfast on the Sunday didn't start until 9, as this meant we had to miss it as we had to leave by 8.30. This really was our only complaint though, as otherwise it was a great stay and we would definitely recommend it.
Rosie Bell, Guest Services / Front Office at Black Horse Inn, responded to this review
Thank you for your constructive feedback. Our cooked breakfast is a real treat but for those guests leaving us early we do offer a continental breakfast that can be delivered to your room the night before you require it so you can eat and go as early as necessary. Due to our location (10 minutes off the Scotch corner A1 junction) we receive a large amount of custom from anglo scotish guests breaking their long journeys. Next time you are planning a trip we would love to see you.
"Wonderful stay!"
Really delicious food, friendly staff and owner, stayed for 2 nights with our border collie. It's an absolute gem, off the beaten track yet accessible…would highly recommend! Rooms are very comfy and clean. Will be back…thank you very much!
"Amazing amazing amazing !"
Amazing welcome and staff were so helpful and the owner so friendly , rooms stunning decor and so clean , the food is amazing ! My birthday was made complete Thankyou to the staff at the black horse ! It was our second stay and we will be back !
"Too noisy"
We stayed as a family, with a toddler, in jan. The room was comfortable and staff friendly. The food was average. The noise from the bar : kitchen / hallway/ kitchen bell ringing, staff chatting in the corridor / doors slamming on the evening was just too much. It kept our toddler and us awake way past an ok time. We couldn't recommend it as a place to stay on that basis.
"Wonderful place to stay,"
Whilst on our way for a weekend at Swindon Park, we decided to stay a night on the way there. My wife was looking and found the Inn. We booked and upon arrival we're impressed. The room was excellent a spacious ground floor room with a small garden in front of it. The on suite bathroom with walk in shower and a free standing bath. Staff were polite and very helpful and the atmosphere was nice and relaxed. The menu was excellent with some nice choices for dinner, I had the sirloin steak and my wife had the fish and chips and both were lovely. Breakfast in the morning was perfect, full Yorkshire breakfast to set you up for the rest of the day. We have decided that next time we have a weekend away we will just come and stay here as we thought the place was fantastic, an all round great experience.
"A lovely Christmas treat"
4 of us stayed here over Christmas. Staff were great, helpful, friendly and obviously take their lead from the boss who aimed to please at all times. Rooms were nicely decorated and the food was spot on. We will definitely return and following the year we have all had it was a wonderful break. Thankyou
"Overnight stay"
Great Hospitality; a warm welcome, an excellent meal, friendly helpful staff members and a most clean and comfortable room. Thank you for an excellent stay, I will definitely be back, but for a few days next time.
"Wonderful stay, delicious food, made very welcome by lovely staff"
A trip with friends to celebrate Christmas. The rooms were exceptionally clean. A very comfy bed with lovely pillows. Good sized room with everything we could want. Fabulous food. Best breakfast ever. Staff were just lovely Exceptional value for money Will be back
"A good night had by all…"
Organised dinner and an overnight stay for a group of work colleagues (9 of us in all). Rooms were clean and comfortable. Food was excellent. A good choice on the menu to suit all tastes. Great flavours and beautifully presented. All coupled with great service. Lovely breakfast as well.
"Fantastic hotel and food"
Just back from a week at the Black Horse Inn. Used as a base to explore North Yorkshire and visit family. My wife and I had a fantastic time. Lovely spacious room, fantastic food, and very friendly service. Couldn't recommend it more strongly.
"Gorgeous Black Horse!"
What a lovely village pub with a cosy bar and dining area and super friendly staff. My room was tastefully decorated and had a great shower and a really comfy bed. Loved the Curly Wurly and fresh milk, water and orange juice in the fridge. I work two or three times a month in Bedale and stay nowhere else! A true gem of North Yorkshire.
"A real hidden gem! "
Great food and great staff! It's not the cheapest but I would highly recommend you pay it a visit! The menu is very well excuted and the portions are spot on (particularly if you don't want to feel Stuffed! The desserts menu looks decent too so I will be giving it a go on my next visit for sure! Be careful though google maps does not know how to find this place!
"Cozy, clean and kind"
This is the perfect spot to stay for business or pleasure. Rosie, Steve and the team take care of you like family, the cozy pub and clean warm rooms are great- make sure to have dinner by the fireplace before turning in. It's great food, a great stay, but the reason I'll be coming back is the people.
"Lovely weekend away"
We booked a two night stay for our wedding anniversary in one of the four poster rooms and what a lovely surprise the room was. We expected it to look like the one on the website, with glass and vibrant colours, but there is actually more than one four poster room, and ours in subtle shades of pink and grey was just lovely. It was very well appointed, robes, hairdryer (though the cable was very short when plugged in under the dressing table!), tea, coffee, a coffee maker and in my opinion the sign that a hotel really takes guest comfort seriously, real milk! The Coach House includes a laundry room with a fridge and guests can collect fresh milk as they need for drinks, perfect! The bed was super comfortable and everything was spotlessly clean. I also appreciated the flannels, a lot of hotels have given up on these and i am always impressed when I don't have to use the one I've packed and take a soggy flannel home! We ate in the restaurant for breakfast both days and the choice was good. The full English was really tasty and the staff were accommodating of our omissions/additions. Dinner was equally good, the locally sourced cheeseboard on the second night was a real highlight. The visit was made though by the staff. We were made to feel very welcome by the amusing lady who checked us in, and the rest of the staff were helpful, efficient and friendly but not intrusive. The owner, Steve, was often around and on hand to make sure guests were comfortable and we left on Sunday feeling refreshed, valued and very full!
"Fabulous stay"
What a fabulous overnight stay - beautiful room in fantastic surroundings, with superb food and delightful staff. PS: probably the best full English breakfast I've ever had. Black pudding to die for! Can't wait to stay again.
"An wonderful stay."
Fabulous place to stay, felt welcome by wonderful staff, room was cosy and very comfortable, and attention to detail superb. Food was off the scale useing local seasonal produce- and great value. Go with an appetite!:-) breakfast was superb and again staff attentive but not overpowering. Really felt a home from home whilst travelling alone.
"Family weekend"
Really enjoyed our stay the staff were very pleasant and approachable we would not have hesitation in booking again. Food was really good and s good selection of drinks available. Atmosphere was good and relaxing
"Absolutely gorgeous"
Has to be the best Sunday dinner we have ever eaten! The food is absolutely outstanding and the service the same. We live two hours away and was in the area for a short break and we are already planning when we can come back just for the food, we are hoping to try staying over for the evening next time as the rooms look fab.
"A Yorkshire gem!"
Cannot recommend the Black Horse Inn enough! Perfectly located for both the beautiful Dales and the North Yorkshire coast, the inn offers luxury accommodation and a wonderful menu of deliciously prepared locally sourced food. Steve and his team do a wonderful job at making guests feel welcome.
"Lovely stay."
Stayed here for my 30th birthday. Lovely, spacious room, however it is very warm! Maybe a bit to warm. Evening meal was great, staff very attentive, but we found it a little overwhelming. Bed was very comfortable and a great size. Overall, we enjoyed our stay, however I'm not sure it was worth the price we paid. The room was clean but needing more attention to detail. Nice stay x
"Dinner on holiday"
Booked here for dinner whilst on holiday in the area. Food was fine but on the evening we went the service was sadly very disappointing. They were obviously busy but they forgot our drinks or to bring a menu, and we were overlooked for some time. Expected better from the reviews.
"Surprise Birthday Party."
My fav place for Sunday lunch. Also to my surprise 30 + friends also were there as a surprise birthday for us. It was brilliant. Shout out to Tom who helped with all the arrangements and Steve for such a good welcome. The food as always was amazing. Thank you for making it so special.
"Unbeatable experience"
Everything you want in a meal out you get at this place. First class food and drink, efficient friendly attentive staff and a lovely cozy atmosphere. Have been coming back to this place for ten years and can't recommend it enough. A proper Yorkshire country pub with a touch of class! Keep up the good work!
"Fantastic quiet retreat"
Loved this pub with rooms, very comfortable stay, just a short hop off the A1, but a very quiet village. The pub is great, with really good food, a fab breakfast and staff that are both efficient and entertaining. Really interested in what and where you've been. The kitchen turns out some really good evening fayre, highly recommend the beef suet pudding as well as the tomahawk pork steak which was stand out tremendous. Very welcoming to our dog too. Make sure you book a table for evening meals as they do get very busy.
"Friendly pub and inn"
We stayed here for four nights recently and dined in each time. The room was very attractive and characterful and there was no disturbance from customers in the bar or noise in the car park, even when the place was busy. The duvet made the bed too hot for my taste, but I often find that when staying away. The room was tidied each day for us. The dinners are very filling. On the first evening we had a starter, which meant we couldn't finish the main course! so the second day we skipped that so that we could enjoy a pudding. On the third day we had one course only! The meals are all very tasty, but you have to bear in mind that they are all pub meals and served with potatoes in some form; there are no pasta or rice options. On one evening there was a large party in the bar which overwhelmed the kitchen so that we had to wait a while even to place our order. The breakfasts were in the same generous tradition. One day I had the largest kipper I had ever seen! The hosts clearly take trouble to befriend their guests. It is no doubt this friendly atmosphere that helped them to win Channel Four's "Four in a Bed".
"wonderful accommodation and food"
Recommended by our daughter - she wasn't wrong! Fantastic food, beautiful room, extremely helpful staff and good location for exploring the area. Attractive indoor and outdoor eating areas. Big car park. Can't rate this inn highly enough.
"Excellent stay"
The dining room and bar are well furnished, feeling homely and cosy, serving delicious food and a good selection of drinks. The bedroom, was beautifully decorated. We stayed in the coach house annex which is just next door to the pub
"Friendly"
We stayed 6 nights at the Black Horse Inn, it is a great central location for North Yorkshire. We arrived on the Sunday lunch time when the pub was in full flow, but once we checked in and settled the place and staff were fantastic. Travelling with our staffie Sam can sometimes be a challenge, but the staff and locals were great and made us feel part of the family. We dined in the pub every night and the food and service was first class even to the point of Sol the pastry chef made my wife a special dessert for our last night. The room was cleaned and serviced perfectly every day We enjoyed ourselves so much we are going back in December and can't wait.
"Friendliest staff, most delicious food, great bar/restaurant and amazing location"
We're staying near by in an Air B&, for a week, and the Black Horse Inn was our first place to visit. The four of us and our three dogs all quickly fell in love with the place. The staff (all of them) were so welcoming and have been fantastic to speak with. The owner (Steve) was great to chat with and made an effort every time we visited to come speak with us. This place quickly became our local and we recommend all of the food. My favourite in particular was the Ribeye steaks. We also ordered the black pudding scotch on three occasions and recommend it highly! We've already planned to come back and stay here next time when we visit this part of the country. We later realised they're also a 4 in a bed winner! :-) definitely deserved
"Wonderful family weekend"
My cousin and I stayed for 3 nights with my Nan and would highly recommend the hotel. The staff from check in to check out ensured we were comfortable and made sure we created lovely memories. The food was fantastic and the rooms were beautiful and incredibly comfortable. We were all able to relax and enjoy the beautiful surroundings. Thank you again to the staff who made our stay and we hope we can return soon.
"Camper stop off"
Attention all campervan owners! This is a fantastic place for an overnight stop. The landlord is very welcoming of campervans, allowing you to stay in the large car park if you book a meal(best to phone in advance) . The staff are very friendly and the food is just amazing. There are toilets available 24hrs, water available for refilling your tanks and there's talk of providing electric hook up. Can't recommend it enough.
"Great 3 night stay."
Just had a great 3 nights stay at the Black Horse Inn, myself my husband and our little, not always well behaved dog Oreo. Perfect location for sightseeing in North Yorkshire. We ate in the hotel each night and the food was excellent, husband is a chef so he should know, it was nice to know when you have been out all day that there is somewhere nice and cosy to go back to. Thanks to Steve and the team.
"Superb Stay"
Lovely friendly staff/ people, great rooms very luxurious and superb tasty evening meal and breakfast was excellent too. It was simply an excellent stay... I would highly recommend the Black Horse. Its a great.location to Richmond, North Allerton, Bedale etc..
"Gilbert gives you 5 stars"
My husband, myself and our dog Gilbert have just had a wonderful three night stay at the Black Horse and accommodation was very comfortable, clean with good decor, food was delicious and catered for all tastes even Gilbert had a cheeky wee fried egg for his breakfast, staff were great chatty and interested in your conversation with them such a fantastic atmosphere. To find such a special place to stay that allows dogs is fabulous and you don't have to worry if you don't have dogs as there is a separate dining room were dogs are not allowed but I must say having dogs gets everyone chatting and friendly we will definitely be coming back for another visit.
"Fairly decent hotel."
We stayed at the Black Horse twice in July, overnight stays to split our journey to Norfolk. Rooms were in a separate building, named after jockeys, not too large given the cost, decoration was a little strange but definitely different from chain hotel rooms. Food was excellent as were the staff and proprietor. Would stay here again, I'd prefer a larger room though.
"2 night break"
We stayed at the Black Horse for two nights over the last weekend. We last stayed here for one night last year after lockdown eased. The Inn is very well appointed. We had a lovely double room and beautiful bathroom. Our dog loved the room and the little garden outside our room where she could play. We ate at the Inn on both nights and the food was wonderful. Breakfast was beautifully cooked and we could not fault the staff who were attentive and pleasant at all times. Muffin received a cooked sausage for her breakfast. We did have sympathy for the poor member of staff who was on check out on Sunday morning who had to put up with a complaining guest who was unhappy about the price he had paid for his small room. She had more patience then me, that's all i can say. When you book a room at the Black Horse you know the price at the time of booking and if you have booked a small room then you have booked a small room and you know what you have paid for it. Some people should just stay at home.
"Please avoid the small Double Room - Nijinsky at all costs"
We had a Saturday night here in the only room we could get, which was a 'small Double Room', ironically named Nijinsky, in which turned out to be at an extortionate B & B rate of £166.32. I know it said 'small' which I can accept but one still expects the fixtures and fittings etc and facilities to be of an acceptable standard - quite simply it was very poorly appointed. One side of the bed was flush against the wall - have never seen that in any half decent room and tbh you would need the dexterity of Nijinsky, the ballet dancer to get in and out of it. So only one bedside table which was mainly taken up by the huge table lamp base - who on earth designs these rooms. No wardrobe, just a few coat hangers against the wall on what resembles a gallows. A tin table and chair adorn the room and if only one of the not very funny wall pictures could have been replaced by a mirror near a socket that would have pleased my partner. Surely it is not a good idea to put up a picture in the room building hallway saying ' complaints department one hundred miles away?! I do genuinely think the Black Horse needs to carefully look at their website description of this room(s) - there was no hairdryer that I could see and certainly no iron and board. Imho it is really a budget room, suitable for one person and to charge us £166.32 for this room is nothing short of a disgrace. Quite honestly it is one of the worst bedrooms I have ever stayed in and for value for money it is defintely the worst. Well below the standard of a Premier Inn, which I like and to me a fair room charge would be c £70. If our booking had been for more than one night then we would have left - simple as that. To try and be balanced, I have no doubt there are nice rooms here but I write my review on my personal experience. There is a large car park and the pub is situated in a lovely village. The evening meal and breakfast were both good but book your evening meal in advance and not on arrival as your confirmatory email suggests. Kath at the hotel was an absolute star - at meal times and by offering to help us with our cases as our room was in a separate house(s) down the road as I believe most rooms are. Finally Black Horse, please consider renaming this room after the local milk horse of yesteryear - it is a slight on the name of the great racehorse Nijinsky!
"Recent two night stay at the Black Horse Inn"
I had great hopes for a lovely stay at the Black Horse Inn after two recommendations and lovely photos on their website but unfortunately the rooms were dirty and dusty and whole decor of the place needs renovating. We were a party of five with three double rooms, the location and layout of the rooms was not at all ideal as some rooms are in a separate building attached to the main pub with entry via going outside. Even after asking for the room to be cleaned again it was still dusty and bathroom wasn't not that clean. A disappointing stay overall although would definitely recommend the food and breakfast which was excellent.
"Great family room and very accommodating for dietary requirements"
We were so lucky to find the Black Horse Inn, there's a real lack of family rooms in the Uk, where the children have a separate sleeping area. The family room at the Black Horse is brilliant for this. It turned out my husband had to work during our visit and so could do so whilst our son slept. We also have dietary requirements and the Black Horse staff were great for all meals. The team are all very warm, efficient and the environment is really pleasant. Would 100% recommend and would love to stay again.
"Couple night away"
We visited for a little over night stay, the room was nice & spacious like shabby sheek decor. The Food excellent in both the evening meal and breakfast. Friendly staff & a good bar area inside & out. Proprietor welcomed all guest new & revisits spends time & makes you feel very welcome.
"Excellent"
Accommodation, food and customer service were fantastic. Would definitely recommend staying here. Wish we had a couple more days here ! The hotel is close to some really beautiful scenery which makes it a perfect family hiking holiday!!!
"Underwhelming"
Food mediocre at best. Room was very dusty, had dirty throws and cushions, an iron burn in the carpet, corroding taps, no milk in the fridge (as stated) and without a working TV. Bed was comfortable and we both slept well. Bar staff were friendly enough but Sally (waitress/front desk) is rude, surly and completely unprofessional.
"Night away"
Excellent stay. Was recommended by Masons gin and we were not disappointed. Lovely room with extra touches. Having juice in the fridge is great. Excellent breakfast too and the staff were all very friendly. Thank you
"Great hotel/restraunt."
The staff were excellent and nothing was a problem to them. The rooms were very comfortable and a very high standard. The evening meal was first class as was the breakfasts. Steve and his staff run a great hotel/restraunt in a picturesque village it's a great place to relax can't wait for my next visit.
"Great stay, great staff, loved it."
Brilliant couple of days stay here as a party of four in two rooms. Nice rooms, fabulous food and a really great atmosphere. Only booked a couple of last minute standard doubles, not the best of their rooms but they were still much nicer than expected and had everything you could need, with the added bonus of a Curly Wurly; the in-room roll top was also a lovely surprise. Staff are awesome and do an astounding job. Really friendly, helpful and efficient; no easy feat considering the burden hospitality is currently under. It was a really busy and popular place so trade never lets up. As a recently retired NHS professional, I think it's important that people realise the extra burden created by short staffing recently and bear in mind how much harder people might have to work to keep the standard. They have a very nice restaurant but we only ate in there for breakfast as preferred to take advantage of their well considered outside space. Food was exceptional, very generous; you definitely need give the black pudding scotch egg a go. Great breakfast selection, highly recommended and even better without a hangover. The breakfast lady was lovely, but unfortunately I didn't catch her name. Thanks to everyone at the Black Horse for a great couple of days. Special thanks to Graham, for his easy going manner, all the laughs and making us feel so welcome by going that extra mile, and to Mark for the friendly banter and generally putting up with us and our insatiable drink requests. You guys are special & we know you probably wanted to kill us, but never let it show ;) And thanks to Steve for making us feel very welcome and valued as guests. We look forward to coming back soon….just kidding about bringing 20 cocktail loving friends next time!!
"Pre wedding get together"
Well organised, COVID safe, attentive service, we were seated as requested outside under the lit, heated and weather protected area. Food of excellent quality, well presented, varied menu and all our table of 13 were very happy and impressed. Thanks for getting our family wedding off to a convivial start.
"Disappointing all round"
7 of us visited for a birthday meal, we have been a few times before and all had decent pub food. Today was well below par with poor food (frozen prawns were the lowlight), sloppy service and generally disappointing experience. A real shame as a lovely pub but we won't be back
"Excellent Food & Accommodation"
We made a fairly last minute booking for one night (Sunday 18th July). To be honest - everything was great! Our room was in a separate cottage building - all very clean and well equipped & had a super comfy bed! We ate in the outdoor garden area on Sunday night - the food was excellent (trio of roasts for my husband and roast beef & Yorkshire pudding for me) It was during the heatwave so we really appreciated being able to eat outside. Next morning we also had breakfast in the garden. The staff were very friendly and accommodating and we felt all Covid measures were being followed. We wouldn't hesitate to stay here again.
"Great weekend away"
Just wanted to say what a great time we had here. The rooms were lovely with contemporary interiors. The food on both nights was excellent and the beer garden was just perfect. Great location for visiting lots of lovely Yorkshire countryside. The staff were very helpful and the overall experience was great. Would highly recommend.
"Pleasant overnight stop"
We chose this venue as it was close to the A1M. The Inn is the hub of a pretty little village with pleasant restaurant and bar areas inside and out. Our room, in a cottage, was comfortable, although the quirky chrome four-poster was odd! The room facilities were good although I would have appreciated a wider selection of teas. The restaurant food is best described as pub grub although well cooked and presented (portions are generous). The waiting staff were well organised and pleasant. All Covid measures were well managed and did not impinge on the enjoyment of our stay. All in all, we enjoyed our stay and will probably return, but the quality did not quite match the cost.
"Brilliant"
We booked for a couple of nights getaway, we arrived at 12 ish and we were shown to our room straight away! The room was lovely, the bed comfy and the pillows just gave you a hug. The food was amazing, dinner was exceptional both nights and breakfast was too. Nothing was too much trouble for the staff, which were all very friendly. Would definitely recommend and we will certainly be back
"Another wonderful stay"
Another wonderful stay at the Black Horse Inn, from the friendly attentive staff, amazing food and drink to a our wonderful room. This was our 7th visit and it never disappoints. We will be back again soon. Thank you.
"Relaxing friendly, with great food."
On arrival my wife checked in, it was super simple and very friendly, she was then shown to the room which was a few meters to the right of the main pub. We have a dog and she was made to feel welcome. The room was large with a queen size bed, a medium size bathroom with shower all spotlessly clean. We stayed two nights first day was Sunday booked a table for 7:30pm and the food did not disapoin, I had roast beef yorshire pud, very nice and my wife had lamb, absolutely gorgeous. We took the dog out with us and she was very welcome in the restaurant. The staff were attentive and friendly nothing was to much trouble the manager was there asking if every thing was OK. We ate in the restaurant again on are second night I had scampi and the wife had lamb. The sweets are excellent. We had a very relaxing break and we would recommend this hotel. Food and service will not disappoint.
"Fantastic"
Superb room including a perfect showering experience!, cleanliness spot on, helpful, friendly vigilant staff, cracking "snap" and quality beer. Fantastic stay and whilst we'd originally booked to enable us to stay whilst visiting a planned (though cancelled!) nearby music event we'll be back.
"Check your understanding of 5 Star..."
Decided to push the boat out after Covid restrictions and booked a superior room costing £150 without breakfast. Firstly we were never told that the room was in a cottage some 50 metres down the road and the room was bordering on the bizarre. The bed which to be fair was comfortable had some hideous metal 4 post structure around it which mean there was virtually no room down the side of the bed. The metal chair was so heavy you could hardly move it and the wardrobes about 12" deep rendering them useless. It is in no way 5 star as most of us would understand this term but apparently it is some AA pub rating. The food was very good, no complaints there. I emailed the manager who was not on duty when we were there but he never bothered to reply so maybe this tells you something. All in all did not live up to expectations for me and at this price you can do much better.
"Great pub and Restaurant"
Great pub and restaurant with accommodation. Good food, good beer and at reasonable prices. Menu you would expect, all the usual favourites plus more. Dog friendly , people friendly. Good atmosphere, attentive staff all in a pretty village not far off the A1.
"Beautiful"
Lovely food , staff , very friendly and helpful , gorgeous rooms . I was in Denman Room with a modern 4 poster bed , walk in rain shower . Coffee and tea making facilities , hairdryer etc Highly recommend! Would definitely go back with a partner or a friend for a non business weekend !
"Nightmare from start to finish - Food, service and ripped off!!!"
In regard to our stay we had tables for Sat night and Sunday lunch. From start to finish we pretty much had a bad experience from the food, service and overall stay. I get the difficult situ Covid but we both feel more could have been done as did others. The Room itself lovely on the pics but when we got there things were quite different - the carpet has an iron mark on, no breakfast offered (Covid) but couldn't there have been any options i.e . room service? The Bedding was marked. We were short on towels. No telephone in the room so we had to keep on going to reception to order and enquire about everything especially during covid I feel this is quite bad. We ordered room service for food and cancelled the tables otherwise we would have had to sit outside in the rain.Saturday evening I went along to reception/bar area to order food & drinks Spiced Chicken Wings – bloody pink, undercooked raw like/inside 1 x Yorkshire Beef Burger which was nice, 1 x Lobster Thermidor (the worst I have tasted) was tough, badly cooked vile - definitely not 5 star & not the standard of two rosettes. The food was basically dumped on the bed as there was nowhere else it could go. I had ordered a bottle of Bollinger at the bar which was added to our room bill. When the food arrived, we asked for another bottle of Bollinger to save time again which we paid for Cash in the room then Leaking ceiling, no refund given when we had overpaid on check out. No reply as yet. Never again will we go there.
"Poor Customer Service "
Stayed here on the 3rd of June was really looking forward to our stay however soon as we checked in you could tell it was going to be one of those stays!!! Reception area really untidy and the Girl who checked us in was ok - however once we checked in we decided to go for a drink, the lady who took our order came across quite rude I think she was the Manger who ran the place - very bossy and no customer relation skills! After our drinks I wanted to pay so I went inside to be looked at gone out by the Manager - she just stared at me and waited for me to speak!!! I said can I pay for my drinks and she replied “what have you had” in a very sharp tone!! Evening meal was excellent then breakfast time we met the grumpy Manager again who was running around everywhere and very unprofessional... I won't be recommending the Black Horse Inn in future however the meal and the breakfast was very good... we won't be back!
"Brilliant"
What a lovely night we had, perfect host Rose, brilliant friendly staff and wonderful food and drink. Would recommend a stay at the Black Horse To any body who loves great food and friendly staff with exceptional Rooms.
"Great for vegans and GF (and meat eaters)"
We had among us a vegan and a coeliac and the vegan and gf options were plentiful and delicious. The place had a very nice atmosphere and the staff were friendly although the service was a little slow at times.
"Ruined by double charge and no communication "
My wife and I stayed here for one night. I want to start with the positives because. This accommodation is suited in a lovely village that is certainly worth a walk around. The pub and restaurant itself is lovely with a great menu and superb food. The accommodation again is lovely which is no doubt why this place was a four in a bed winner a couple of years ago. Sadly however I have ended up being charged twice for my stay. I am sure this could be attributed to an error however my grievance is due to the fact nobody is willing to sort this out or even communicate with me despite the fact I have provided statements of charges to my card that show this. I keep being told by their switchboard that the manager will call me (the one a few people below state is arrogant and rude) to refund me but I never recieve this call. I have also gone through booking.com who have contacted the property and advise them of their error but yet to get any refund. I am not going to be one of those people that give one star and say avoid or state that this hotel is an awful place because the accommodation and food is really nice however if you do decide to book staying here just be mindful of charges and espeically if you book via a third party such as booking.com you double check your charges. Furthermore if you have any issues that you want addressing don't expect the level of customer service to be anything more than non existent.
"Excellent stay at this beautiful hotel"
We had been lucky enough to have won a competition with a choice of hotels to choose from. We decided on the Black Horse after reading the reviews and we certainly weren't disappointed. We had dinner, bed and breakfast and it exceeded our expectations. Fabulous food, and a comfortable, luxurious room with en suite in The Coach House. Dinner both nights was exceptional. The Sunday roast beef was simply amazing! The staff were all extremely friendly, professional and very covid aware. I was pleased to see that they have now stopped dogs being allowed in the dining room, we took our well behaved labrador with us but he stayed in the room whilst we ate, the first night we had to endure the constant barking of a guests dog in the dining room, so I We will definitely be back to stay again.
"Motorhome Pubstop"
We stayed at the Black horse, via their Pubstop facility. Park in their carpark overnight and dine with them. We had a couple of pints then a lovely meal. Beer was good, food was lovely. It was a beautiful day, so we ate outside. Staff were friendly and helpful and brought drinks to everyone's tables for Covid compliance. Due to eating outdoors, I can't describe the inside. However, both beer gardens are absolutely top notch, beautifully kept and laid out. If that's anything to go by, then I'm sure inside will be tasteful, clean and well presented. Great pub to visit for a drink, a meal or an overnight. Highly recommended.
"Our new favourite place!"
We went here for the first time yesterday. The steak was by far the best we've ever eaten. All the food was delicious and so well presented. The staff were so friendly and such an nice atmosphere. We took our dogs and little girl - all the staff were so lovely with them. I can't recommend enough. Will be returning!
"Excellent evening"
What a superb traditional country pub, with a good range of ales & really good, varied menu. Very good covid precautions, & coupled with the staff careful attention to detail, made the evening feel very safe. Food was excellent, & very nicely presented. Served very efficiently by Frankie, whose eyes were always smiling even behind her face mask
"Amazing Sunday Roast"
This is probably one of the best Sunday Roasts that I have had. Everything was cooked to perfection, proper home cooked Yorkshire Pudding who could ask for more. Friendly and efficient service, lovely heated outdoor covered area.
"The best"
Honest review: the best place I've stayed. Not only is the food amazing!! (Hats off to the chefs) but also the service is superb. A huge shout out to Frankie, Lucy, Mark and Graeme. My boyfriend and I have come to this pub many times and it's very sentimental to us, I can't recommend enough. 5 stars xxx
"Nice Room but who was in charge of breakfast?!!"
Spent last night in the ‘Denman' room which is situated in the Coach House. When we arrived nobody seemed to know about us having booked a room which was obviously worrying. After about 5 minutes we was then escorted to our room. The room was very clean but was absolutely freezing! The radiator wasn't on and it took a lifetime to warm up. We unpacked, got washed and changed and decided to go for a drink. There was no hot water available from the Sink. The shower was okay but took forever to get warm. There's a switch near the light but that doesn't seem to work?! The Pints of Estrella were nice and the service was very good. We then ate in the restaurant. This was the highlight of our stay. The Sunday Dinner was amazing and again the service throughout was impeccable. After Tea we went back to our room. The bed was very comfortable and I had a great nights sleep. The next morning didn't go to plan. We woke up about 8:30am and went to go and get breakfast. We was told by the lady serving that she wasn't told anyone was due for breakfast so there was no Full English available?! Another gentleman came in shortly after us and was told the same thing, much to his annoyance! We was offered two pieces of toast each and a selection of Weetabix, Alpine or Corn Flakes along with a Tea or Coffee. Not what we payed for and wasn't told there would be no Full English the night before. We was especially looking forward to this after reading reviews and having watched the Four In a Bed show they featured on which also gave great marks for the breakfast. Overall the rooms are very nice, the service (Other than breakfast and checking out) was also very good but it was let down massively by the breakfast situation. 6/10 would stay there again but would hope for better next time for the price.
"Excellent Food"
Once again had a Sunday Roast was excellent as usual hospitality and service was great stay over in Motorhome lovely spacious car park and water and toilets available during night nice relaxed start next day
"Excellent Service"
They have really gone to town to create a lovely outdoor eating area top notch, the food and service were excellent as usual. very good attention to COVID prevention rooms were well maintained a peaceful setting
"Amazing service, food and gorgeous place!"
All the staff were so friendly, all the food was absolutely delicious and loved the beer garden with outdoor heating! Such a nicely decorated place and a great atmosphere, would highly recommend a visit :)
"Amazing Location"
We stayed in our Motorhome for the night, the food was to die for, the staff were fantastic and the location stunning. The Landlord is encourging Motorhomes/Campers to stopover and we are so glad he has. First Class in every department.
"It was more good than bad"
Accommodation, food, decor, prices & location were excellent. These were so good that we will almost definitely visit again. Service was the downfall; we stayed for 2 nights so we had 2 breakfasts and 2 evening meals and the staff tried hard but it was all too frantic, not enough staff, and no organisation or control or leadership. The manager was a 100% waste of space, he was also rude and ignorant; I can't stress that enough.
"Most enjoyable one-night stay at Black Horse, Kirkby Fleetham."
Excellent evening meal, breakfast and overall experience considering COVID situation. All staff very welcoming, helpful, diligent and COVID-aware. Location very useful for access to Yorkshire Dales, North Yorkshire and Teesside.
"Three fun nights"
Great place to stay , good rooms, named after horses very comfortable. Most of the staff happy and helpful. Food good and full selection of drinks. Well placed for touring around ,all in all worth a visit.

"Cheeky Night Away"
Fantastic over night stay in this Best Western Inn Lovely rural location Excellent service from friendly, welcoming staff who couldn't do enough for us Spacious room, comfy bed, fantastic food locally sourced and reasonably priced Covid secure throughout Overall a great stay which was much needed

"Angela"
This is the second time we have stayed and the whole stay was excellent. The meals (breakfast and evening meal) are delicious. Both menus are extensive. All staff are attentive and friendly. Recommend
"Fantastic stay."
From the moment we arrived we knew it was the place for us. Extremely welcoming and thorough in covid 19 practice, they carry this out without spoiling your enjoyment of your experience. We had lunch by a roaring fire, it was delicious and plentiful. We were then shown to our room, it was beautiful, and very clean and comfortable. Last but not least the we ate there for all our evening meals and of course breakfast. Amazing choice and everything was freshly cooked and presented beautifully. We enjoyed it so much we have booked to return again. We could be selfish and keep this little gem to ourselves however the team deserve to be congratulated on their hard work.
Rosie Bell, Sales at Black Horse Inn, responded to this review
We are so excited that you booked to return before your first visit was over.....what a great advert. Thank you for your lovely review.
"Fabulous stay."
I stay in premium hotels 100-150 nights a year and really rate the detail to comfort. Stayed in the Red Rum room very comfortably with pleasant food and staff, can see I will be stopping here in the future.... Jonathan.
Rosie Bell, Sales at Black Horse Inn, responded to this review
Dear Jonathan Thank you so much for your review. Our aim is to give our guests the home from home experience which a lot of our competitors cannot match due to their sheer scale. The Black Horse is a unique destination but our location makes us so accessible to allow us to tempt the business and leisure market. Many of our loyal business guests now bring their families when they can as they love the spot that much. We really look forward to welcoming you back soon.
"Great stay."
Just stayed for one night on Sunday 18th Oct. Myself and my wife and our dog were made so welcome by all the staff and the food , both evening meal and breakfast, were fantastic. We stayed in the Best Mate room and it was comfy with no complaints. Will be back without doubt as the Inn and surrounding village is beautiful.
Rosie Bell, Sales at Black Horse Inn, responded to this review
Thank you for your review. Kirby Fleetham is a beautiful little Yorkshire village and is a beautiful setting for the Black Horse. So pleased you enjoyed your stay with us. Best Mate is one of our latest additions to our 14 bedrooms and is very popular with our guests. We look forward to welcoming you back soon.
"Great nights stay"
One night stay in stay in Red Rum & Shergar rooms. Great facilities, super grub - both dinner & breakfast. The dog was also made to feel very welcome. Shout out to Rosie who was a delight & a bundle of energy. Would highly recommend staying here.

Many thanks for your great review. We strive to give everyone the home from home experience. Very much look forward to welcoming you back again in the near future. PSI will take the energy compliment....you should see what I sprinkle on my cereals!!!
"Excellent service"
Had a lovely over night stay with evening meal and breakfast. The food was great and the staff were friendly and efficient. The hotel was cosy with an open fire in the bar area. It was a lovely break and it had a feeling of normality despite the COVID restrictions.
Rosie Bell, Sales at Black Horse Inn, responded to this review
Many thanks for your great review. With all the covid restrictions it is a real delight that despite all the controls we have in place you had a sense of normality. The team here take that as a real compliment. You must ensure that you get a date in the diary to return when we really are back to normal. Stay safe!
"Let down by dinner"
Having stayed here previously, we were really looking forward to a long-awaited child free weekend. Room was lovely, nice lunch in the bar when we arrived. So far as excellent as expected. Unfortunately dinner was an absolute shambles. Our 7.30pm reservation was re-confirmed at check in. We headed to the restaurant to be told that other diners were taking longer than expected, could we wait another 10 mins. Fair enough, we went back to the bar and ordered another drink. 20 mins later, they told us our table was ready. The table was a huge rickety fold up table which had been placed in the restaurant doorway. We were seated at either end - almost too far from each other for a conversation. It was so awkwardly placed that every time the waiting staff squeezed past my chair with a drink, they spilled some on the floor next to me. We told one of the waiting staff we weren't happy with the table. Turned out they'd tried to seat someone there immediately before us who had also refused to sit there. Staff then spent a further 10 mins trying to sort out another place for us to sit. If we had turned up without a booking, and they were doing their best to accommodate us, that would have been understandable. But we did have a reservation, they just didn't honour it. We finally got given a table back in the bar which we had little choice but to accept. It was either that or not have any dinner... A token gesture would have been nice, maybe a drink on the house during the 30 mins we were being messed around... we got absolutely nothing other than a verbal offer of a room upgrade on our next visit (bit bold to assume there'll be a future visit...) Really took the shine of what would otherwise have been a lovely stay.
Rosie Bell, Sales at Black Horse Inn, responded to this review
Thank you for your review. We appreciate all feedback and always endeavour to improve our customer service. Sorry you feel this way about your table reservation. Covid regulations have required us to amend our seating plan throughout the establishment and can be very challenging especially on a busy service.
"Evening out with friends"
What an amazing pub. Really nice atmosphere Steve and his team and the local's was very friendly And the food was amazing too. Would highly recommend. We was visiting from down south. Had a very enjoyable time up here.
Rosie Bell, Sales at Black Horse Inn, responded to this review
Great news that you enjoyed your stay. See its not so grim up north as you are led to believe! Many thanks for your cracking feedback....I will share it with the team and our locals!!! Stay safe and hope to see you again soon.
"An amazing place to eat and stay"
I brought my Mum here for an overnight stay for her birthday, after dining here several times with friends enjoying the fabulous food. We stayed in one of the new rooms which was lovely! Staff are very pleasant and friendly, will do anything for you. Evening meal was 10/10 along with breakfast. Very covid safe with a wrist temperature scanner as you walk in, and social distancing in place. Thank you so much for a wonderful time! Highly recommended:)
Rosie Bell, Sales at Black Horse Inn, responded to this review
We are all living in uncertain times at the moment and doing what we can to keep our customers and our colleagues safe. Many thanks for taking the time out to share your experience. The temperature scanner has been a vey welcome addition to our covid safe environment and offers that extra piece of mind to us all. I have shared your feedback with the team and they are all delighted you had a great stay with us. Stay safe!
"Great place to stay."

"What a delight! "
We booked here for 1 night stay, to just have a night to chill relax and enjoy some nice food and drink...we couldn't have chosen better! Arrived mid afternoon and the sun was shining so enjoyed a few drinks in the beer garden. We were shown to our room which was one of the four poster rooms in separate cottage next door - what a treat! Bed unbelievably comfortable (it really was such a struggle to get up the next morning!). Tea, coffee, hot chocolate provided in room along with surprise treat of chocolate bar - Thankyou! Lovely en-suite with super shower. Everything spotlessly clean and great styling and decor to the room - we just felt very comfortable and relaxed as soon as we walked in! Booked time for evening meal and when we went for this had a fabulous 3 course meal where the food was just top quality. The chef's here produce some amazing meals - so Thankyou to them as it made our stay...breakfast the next morning was also fabulous. To the lady who looked after us on booking in and breakfast the next morning, we thought you were amazing. Took the time to chat to guests and really make sure we had everything we needed, so professional and friendly. As a Nurse I must also add that it was reassuring to see all staff wearing face masks in the current climate of COVID, all guests were spaced out for meals and the wrist temperature checker on entry is such a good idea! Yes these are different times to what we are all used to but my husband and I felt safe here and we were able to relax enough due to the measures in place that our stay just felt ‘normal'. We would love to come back and see you all again and enjoy that hospitality and warm welcome...Thanks for a lovely mini break!
Rosie Bell, Sales at Black Horse Inn, responded to this review
Thank you so much four your very glowing review. Frankle is a one of newest rooms and is proving very popular with all our guests. We are all living in uncertain times and all trying to find a light at the end of the tunnel so to speak. It is very rewarding for the whole team to receive such considered feedback. Your review is taking pride of place on the staff notice board. We very much hope to welcome you back in the near future.
"The Best Black Pudding That I Have Ever Eaten. By Steven Oughton"
Me and my partner was due to get married in Las Vegas, due to Covid our 28 day road trip across the states was cancelled, I arrived home Friday and we deceived to go for a small road trip of our own. I needed some where that would take our beloved pooch “Lola” I searched the Internet high and low, our standards are not low and we live nice things. The Black Horse..... interesting, I looked at the rooms and to my delight they were Lovely. The price was unbelievably cheap. We arrived late, the gentleman and lady that greeted us were very kind and polite. One of the ladies loved Lola and showed us to our home from home. We even had a little goody bag upon arrival with an all time favourite “curly wurly” It wasn't Vegas but we was happy. My partner had a lay in as were heading to Edinburgh today, I wrote this from my table with a full tummy. I was greeted again by a lovely lady who was very attentive, professional and just damn right lovely. I myself run a business so I was on my phone mostly but the lady kept coming and chatting to me, which was great I came to get away not work, I hope she doesn't think I was rude. My breakfast. . . I've eaten all over the world, I love food and proud to say it. The chef “who ever it may be” Has created his/her own Black Pudding. Let me tell you, “it is the best black pudding I have ever eaten, in my life” If you want a family feel, the essence of being around friends when your away from home then the Black Horse is the place to go. Advise is never cheap but I'm going to give it for free “it's the kinda guy I am” There is a hidden gem, Full of joy and love, The beds at least comfy & the team are fun. Google Black Horse Inn, “Northallerton” You'll find us, We are there, Yes, I said we, Because I feel like family now. For all the team at The Black Horse Inn “Thank you so much, this year has been a tough one and it's you guys that have put a smile on my face. I don't do many reviews and I should. I hope this one makes you all smile the way you made me smile. It's an absolute pleasure to meet you all. P.s can I have some Black Pudding to take home :) ****Only a few moments off the A1, any one heading north? This is a Great place******
Rosie Bell, Sales at Black Horse Inn, responded to this review
Dear Steve Thank you for your review. Yes I am smiling! Being senior in years I was always taught that good customer service is smiling at the customer but excellent customer service is when the customer smiles at you. So pleased you discovered us and that you got to sample our legendry black pudding. We are very proud of this super food and it features in all our menus with the piste de resistance being the black pudding scotch egg on our ala carte menu. The pudding is made to our unique recipe and is incredibly popular with all our guests. Covid 19 has affected us all but receiving your feedback has been a real tonic for the whole team. We do hope you had a great weekend in Edinburgh and that the weather didn't dampen your enjoyment. Good luck re arranging your wedding plans and we hope it is not too long before you bring Lola for another stay.
"Disappointing quality and poor Covid compliance"
This hotel was the last of our 10 day trip around Scotland when we were making our way home to Wales via Yorkshire. This was the most expensive hotel of all we had stayed at, but unfortunately the least enjoyable and worst value. The roolm was small (Dessert Orchid) and was in need of refurbishment and a good clean. Given the Covid situation, I would expect the rooms to be pristine and well maintained. Dust in the room was evidently proof that even table tops were not cleaned-very worrying. Staff, whilst pleasant were not promoting Covid rules - only one hand sanitizer at the bar (nothing at the door upon entry) and staff wearing masks beneath their noses. A gentleman at the bar (owner/mamagfer) ? was not wearing a mask at all. Not Covid aware at all. We felt very uncomortbale/unsafe during our one night stay, something we had not felt during our stays at the other hotels during our trip. Breakfast time was chaotic and there was a long wait with confusion by staff members about the availability of cooked to order items. No cerals were offered (despite available) Would not return as we felt unsafe during Covid-19
Rosie Bell, Sales at Black Horse Inn, responded to this review
Thank you for your review. As I write this response in our reception I am looking at 3 bottles of sanitizer (which have been in place since Mothering Sunday). There is an electronic temperature checker on the front door. All staff and customers are wearing masks as requested - which has been law since last Thursday. If your stay was before that date masks were not compulsory. We like all business are ensuring we protect both our customers and staff and are constantly working on improving safety. Thank you for your feedback.
"Excellent place to stay and eat!"
We stayed for an overnight here and the room was luxury and cosy. The restaurant of the same quality, our evening meal was amazing! Breakfast served in the same restaurant and again the food quality was outstanding.

"Faultless!"
What a great 3 night stay, amazing room with lovely small touches, so dog friendly and in such a fabulous well accessible area. Great friendly staff, amazing food, well worth the price. Will definitely recommend ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Your recommendations would be very much appreciated and we hope to welcome you back soon.
"Elegant eating and relaxing unwinding."
We travelled down from Northumberland on Sunday 20th September 2020 to spend the night and visit North Yorkshire the next day. We have stayed here overnight before but that was four years ago. We were interested to see how the old watering hole was faring. We weren't disappointed. Our accommodation was first class - a large en-suite room with a huge four poster bed located in a separate front-street annexe, well within staggering distance of the bar... The evening meal ( a full Sunday dinner) was timely, ample and delicious. The staff, new faces all, were a delight. Later an extremely comfortable night was spent in the sumptuously-mattressed over-size bed (my wife now wants a bed like this one...Huh! Thanks Black Horse - more expense in the offing... Next morning we faced the day fully refreshed and set it all off with a fantastic breakfast;a full Yorkshire for my wife -delicious Eggs Royale for me. Beautiful! All told this was yet another marvellous experience and we simply love this place. By the way it was good to see the mannikin couple back adorning their rightful place in the beer garden! Must also say we thought the the big horse out front is a strikingly inspired addition. Anyway, compliments and a big thanks to all the staff who made our stay the delight that it was.
Rosie Bell, Sales at Black Horse Inn, responded to this review
Do you know what: it was our pleasure to look after you .I have share your feedback with the whole team and they are delighted. Many thanks for taking the time to share your experience with your fellow travellers. Please do not leave it another 4 years before you return.....who knows where the mannequins may be by then. Stay safe
"Amazing food and nice room"
Very impressed with the quality of main courses and desserts and fairly priced. Although the breakfast menu was small and on the pricier side. The staff were very polite and thought the room was very nice and cosy. We were surprised to find no hand soap in the hotel room given the current pandemic and asked at the reception whom was going to have some delivered to the room. After an hour we had still not heard anything and it was getting quite late so called the hotel again and then received it within 15 minutes. Other than that overly pleased and would definitely stay again.

Many thanks for your feedback. We are incredibly lucky to have a fantastic team in the kitchen that constantly delight our guests. They launched their Autumn menu and I was blown away by the choice on offer. I apologise re the housekeeping issue. I will follow this up as I can totally understand your concern. We very much look forward to welcoming you back when you are next in the area.
"3 night stay and we loved it"
Visiting family up north during the post lockdown period we opted to stay B&B rather than invade their homes for a few days and found this pub was located midpoint between the two locations where our family both lived. Very happy with our find and our stay given the short notice and it was good enough to make it onto the list of places we'd stay at again... That's our Seal of Approval of this place... :D We ate there on two of the nights with our northern family and the meals were great. Breakfast was fab too (I especially loved the kippers...). Staff were very friendly, the pub was nice and the room we had (Arkle?) was very comfy. The rooms all have names of famous racehorses and our one was in a separate cottage just 30-40m down the road from the pub itself (3 or 4 other rooms located in the same cottage). Comfy bed. I think the only negative I'd have is that the bedroom wall must be paper thin as we could clearly hear the people talking and just moving about next door. They weren't shouting either... It's the reason I've given a 'Very Good' rather than an 'Excellent'.... Not sure what the people in the next room would have made of my snoring my way through the night after a couple of pints of Boltmaker... I await a review from them complaining about the noise that kept them awake all through the night... EDIT: On reflection maybe I'd have a different review to write if the couple in the next room were 'energetic' users of their bed or kept the TV going on all night. Maybe the owners do need to think about adding another layer of plasterboard each side to make the rooms a little more private as I don't want to hear everything going on next door and it's no exaggeration to say that any noise travelled...
Rosie Bell, Sales at Black Horse Inn, responded to this review
Thank you for your feedback. The original building which your room was located in is cira 1650. This brings incredible charm and some housekeeping issues. Thank you for your positive review and I am glad to say we have not received any snoring complaints yet. Please request a room in our newly refurbished Coach House next time you are visiting.
"Best Sunday Dinner ever"
Would 1000% recommend and re-visit, the best Sunday dinner I've ever had and also very friendly staff. Well priced for the service and for the quality of the food. Staff are very helpful and can't do enough for you
"Great good and staff very disappointing rooms"
Very mixed feeling when writing this review as the majority of the staff are carrying this establishment and this review is aimed purely at the owners of the hotel. We called prior to booking as was looking for a room with a king size bed and confused on the website as to which room to book ( was undecided between 2 hotels in area). I called the number at the bottom of the website. A very helpful man explained a couple of the double room had king beds and he would watch out for the booking and allocate it to a king bed. He called me back immediately and also gave me bed and breakfast for the £129 price to which I was very grateful. We arrived and the manager showed us to the room (desert orchid. ) Sadly no king bed but what struck me more was how sad and tired it looked in comparison to the fabulous reviews. We would have been happy to leave and find another hotel rather than stay in the room. I explained the mix up with the king bed and he was very helpful and took us to another room, (shergar) this was 2 singles pushed together and seemed a better room. We were still disappointed as the more we were in the room getting freshened up to go to eat we felt the room was in a nutshell “grubby” and in need of good lick of paint and refurb. We opened the windows to let some fresh air in ( Apparantly this is the room customers with dogs like to stay) which was apparent. Thank goodness we only booked one night and the rate was ok. Although still felt paid over the odds for a 3 star quality room. On the other side the meal in the restaurant and breakfast was beautiful and the waitresses and chefs were lovely. The saving grace of the stay. Recently, strangely, reviewers have rated this place but really owners you have had months of lockdown surely you could have spent this time wisely and sorted out the mouldy windows and stained curtains and carpets. Second night in a different higher end bed 5 star bed and breakfast. Much cleaner and £35 cheaper! What a shame it is a lovely place going to rack and ruin

Thank you for your review. We take all feedback very seriously and a re very grateful for you for taking the time share your views on TripAdvisor. The Black Horse is a very unique destination and is proving very very popular this summer. As you can see from fellow Trip Advisor users we generally receive glowing reviews. Our redecorating programme is on going and due to our on going commitment to providing accommodation to key workers not all our rooms have been redecorated yet this year.

"Brilliant meal"
Visited last week with colleagues and will return. Great menu, excellent quality. Nice location and great service. We had a vegetarian with us who said it was her best meal ever. I had scallops to start followed by monk fish scampi. Outstanding.
Rosie Bell, Sales at Black Horse Inn, responded to this review
Thank you for your review. The monk fish scampi has been on the menu for 4 weeks is incredibly popular with our guests. Vegetarians are well catered for we do an amazing mushroom starter which is literally out of this world.
"As Good As Always"
Food, room, service, staff, Covid guidelines all faultless as always. We have stayed in most of the rooms which are immaculately clean, all with individual tasteful decor and homely touches. This is our favourite venue to meet our friends who share all my views posted in this review. We never need an excuse to come to the Black Horse.
Rosie Bell, Sales at Black Horse Inn, responded to this review
Oh thank you so much for your loyalty. In these challenging times we are so very lucky to have such a strong support form our regular customers. It is very much appreciated.
"Mini Moon from hell!"
So having had our wedding day completely changed due Covid. We were treated to a couple of nights here. The photos on the website are nothing like the room we got. It was Damp and paint was peeling from the walls.. we complained and were told we had the best room already so if we wanted to change it would be worse and it wouldn't be until the following day. Totally disappointed, I emailed head office on Thursday and it still hasn't been acknowledged.Whilst we were there we overheard another family complaining about a damp room too.. I've attached photos of our room and the Damp walls, the manager knew it was damp but said there was nothing he could do about it as it's an ongoing problem.Wtf!!! We cut our 3 day mini-moon short and would not recommend this place for an overnight stay! £351 for 2 nights is extortionate for a damp dingy tiny room...
"Restaurant review"
Its difficult to write a balanced review as there were both good and bad points. It was one of our first meals out after lockdown. Other places we had visited made us feel safe with tables very well spaced, table service, one way systems and Covid aware staff. We didn't see the same things at the Black horse. The tables were very close together, people were standing at the bar, guests and staff were walking everywhere and we personally didn't feel safe. It was very busy and the wait for food long. Many tables were complaining When the starters arrived for the two couples seated next to us, they were told "sorry for the wait, you needn't bother coming again" !!!!! Not surprisingly they left after their starter. Their leaving gave us more space so we stayed for our meal. The food however was excellent and we will revisit for food but not until Covid has settled
"Fab first stay"
We went for our first much needed break following Covid restrictions. Met by Steve with a top welcome and a great explanation of all the things in place to make our stay safe. We stayed in Best Mate, a lovely room with top furnishings and luxurious bedding. Beautiful en suite too. We ate in the restaurant, food was excellent, as was the service from everyone. Breakfast was top drawer too. A massive 5 out of 5 for our stay We will be back, no doubting that. Well done to all the team.
"Excellent food and lovely hotel"
Visited on our way up to Scotland as basically half way. We have never stayed in this part of England and I only booked after reading the reviews on tripadvisor. Have to say it was so good that we booked for our return leg next week. The rooms are spacious and very clean and all the staff super helpful and friendly. The standout though for me was the restaurant. We have been lucky enough to eat at many top restaurants and here is right up there but a fraction of the price. The portions are very good and the ingredients top quality and very well cooked. The bar also is worth a visit and has a good selection.
"Absolutely fantastic with amazing food!"
Myself and my partner came here to stay for the night in Feb 2020. It was absolutely fantastic! The room was clean, well presented and very spacious! We stayed in a room on the ground floor and had a door out into a little patio with a table and chairs. The food is absolutely out of this world! We both had garlic mushrooms to start and fillet steaks! Both cooked to perfection and very filling. Service is very good and all staff are very friendly and helpful. We returned for a meal (15/8/2020) unfortunately couldn't get a room as it was fully booked. But Once again the food was fantastic, Perfectly cooked and great choice of food available. We couldn't fault anything. Very well socially distanced and clean with plenty of sanitising stations available. We will definitely be returning in the future!
"Simply fabulous!"
We were both really fed up on Friday morning and after checking for a few last minute deals we came across the Black Horse, Kirkby Fleetham. We're not over familiar with the area but we do know that North Yorkshire is quite simply one if the most beautiful counties in the land. So, on a whim, we booked a room and we couldn't have been more pleased. Everything from the staff (great sense of humour) to the room (extremely clean) to the food (delicious) was just a fantastic and we can't recommend it enough. Just one little tip - book a table in advance if you plan to eat, as the restaurant was extremely busy. Who knew!?!?
"Excellent Stay - Felt so safe"
I promised Steve a good review....... We booked a room in the Black Horse Inn as a stop over on our journey south. Due to Coronavirus we also pre-booked a table for dinner - what a hidden gem! From arrival (plenty car parking at the back of the Inn) to check out, we were looked after by all the friendly and welcoming staff and nothing was any problem. We felt so safe - I had even packed anti-bac wipes to wipe down the surfaces in the room but there was no need, our room (Shergar) was immaculate as was the bathroom. An added bonus was the garden outside our room and a roll top bath! There was a one way system to follow within the Inn which most guests followed with social distancing at the bar also adhered to. The food was excellent both at dinner and breakfast and the waiting staff couldn't do enough for you. Thank you for a safe and wonderful stay - we will be back for another visit.
"Excellent in every way "
We stayed here for a few days to rest and recharge and that's exactly what we did. The room was spacious and clean with a super comfy bed. Quirky decor made it extra special. The staff are friendly and helpful and are clearly a happy team. We had a lovely walk around the villages to Kirkby Hall. The restaurant is absolutely amazing and the delicious food, cooked and presented with attention to detail made the break extra special. Thank you to the wonderful team, we will be back soon
"Fantastic food and service"
Visited tonight for dinner , from arrival to finish all great , food was very good . Well cooked and presented. Everyone really enjoyed the food , dessert was fantastic too. A very warm evening and they were very busy . Lots of staff and everything was just great . Now our new local well worth a visit . We have a holiday Annex in Aiskew just 4 miles away and will be highly recommending the Black Horse To our guests . Thank you and keep up the great work
"Little gem"
We have stayed on quite a few occasion standards remain exceptionally high The food service and rooms are amazing it is without doubt our favourite place to stayThe room is always spotlessly clean and the customer service is exceptional
"Comfortable room and friendly staff"
Our first outing away from home since Covid. What a wonderful place to chose. The staff were well trained with the new rules ( hand sanitisers etc) they were polite and friendly and made us feel safe in the hotel, bar area and restaurant. We stayed in the Coach house and the room was beautiful, comfy and clean. The crisp white cotton bedding were a delight! Our meals taken in the restaurant were delicious and plentiful and we enjoyed a few drinks sat in the bar before and after trying some new gin flavours. I would highly recommend the Black Horse Inn.
"Understated overall quality"
This was our ‘breakout', from lockdown, for my wife, a couple of friends, our 2 dogs and myself, on the evening prior to the 4 of us sharing a cottage for 5 nights so it needed to be good. It didn't let us down. The bedrooms were spacious with very comfortable beds, tastefully decorated and really lovely en suite bathrooms. High standard and selection of food and drink and staff very friendly and attentive. Delightful and peaceful location, former 4 in a bed winner and being a Best Western completed our first evening away - bliss.
"A wonderful end to a spontaneous week"
Staying at this hotel was something we did on a whim. We started our week with no plans at all. And this was our last night. We pulled over in a town nearby and Googled places to stay. The Black Horse Inn came up. We saw it was a Best Western hotel, and to be honest I laughed. Having seen 'A very British hotel: Inside Best Western' I had preconceptions about this hotel. It is the high end of the best western spectrum, but I was still dubious. But it looked lovely, the menu looked good and breakfast was included. And at the price we paid, we couldn't grumble. It was booked. Kirkby Fleetham is a small quiet village, and I think the Black Horse Inn may be the only establishment there! We parked up, and took the wrong entrance to the building to start with. But we found main reception and we're greeted by some friendly staff members. I also noticed a plaque above the door, not only was this hotel a best western signature, it was a four in a bed winner! We love that show, so it sealed the deal for us. We quickly checked in and we're shown to our room. To get to the room we walked through a beer garden, in which there were sat two manaquins with face masks on. This added to the charm of the place. All of the rooms were named after horses, and ours was Red Rum.The room was spacious and clean. The winning point for me though...the free standing bath in the room itself! I love a good bath, and it's not often I get to have one in such a lovely bathtub. I decided after tea, that's where I would be spending my evening. We decided to get showered and freshen up before we went for food. The en suite shower room was lovely, the shower had one of those big shower heads that rains water on you. The toiletries provided were pretty nice actually, didn't leave my hair feeling horrible like some do. We went into the restaurant area, and were seated by a lovely chap. Didn't catch his name, but I loved his sense of humour and general demeanor. We ordered the scallops to share as a starter. They were tasty. I ordered the burger for a main, and R ordered the suet pudding. Wow. The food was delicious. The burger was juicey and the tomato relish really made it. The suet pudding was full of fall apart meat and came with some super creamy mash and roasted veggies. We decided against dessert as we were just too full, but our wonderful waiter said they would probably be able to hook us up if we decided to come back a bit later. We were still really full, so decided not to. We headed back to the room just in time for a storm to start. I was able to watch the lightening and listen to the thunder and rain while in the luxurious bathtub. It was a really warm day/evening so we had to have the windows open, especially with me running a bath. One of the windows let A LOT of water in, so we had to put a towel on the windowsill. We did try having it closed, but it was just too hot. We watched a bit of telly, but I was asleep in minutes! The bed itself was ok, not really anything special and we have slept on better. But we both had a reasonable night sleep. We went for breakfast, but we must have misheard the times so were early. Instead of going back to the room, we went for a walk around the village. The sun was shining and it was very quiet. A nice stroll really. The lovely ladies doing breakfast service sat us and provided a menu. She explained how they usually had the tables set prior to coronavirus, and were apologetic. But there was no need! I chose the salmon and scrambled egg, R went for the kippers. We were given mixed toast, and cereal. The whole thing was delicious. We will absolutely be returning to see Steve and the team.
"Perfect quiet atmospheric accomodation"
We were looking for somewhere in the countryside away from the crowds .We wanted somewhere we could stay over ,eat whilst there within the hotel and feel " at home " but away from home ! This was the perfect place .The food is superb with ample choice for supper or breakfast .The service is personable, not fussy and discreet .
"Anniversary Stay"
We stayed for one night for our 1st wedding anniversary. The room was beautiful and basically a suite. We had drinks in the bar in the afternoon (good wine selection and beers) and ate in the restaurant in the evening. It was the Sunday menu and the roast beef was amazing, cooked to perfection (was asked how I liked it cooked as well which was good). Hubby had the pheasant and was equally as good. Service fantastic and generally just a lovely stay from start to finish. Highly recommend and we'll certainly be back.
"Superb Stay"
We were testing the water out of lockdown and we were not disappointed. This hotel is fantastic, everyone was friendly and helpful and the food delicious. The room was lovely with an extremely comfy bed. We felt completely safe.
"Room"
It is a good job we did not take a cat because there was no room to swing it! Tacky posters and signs trying to be funny but actually summed up the place. Was given a room that we did not booked with no explanation but was still charged the full price of the room we actually booked. AA Five Star is very questionable.
"£10 FOR A BOWL OF SALAD!"
I can't fault the rooms, they have everything you will need. However, what I can fault is the restaurant. If you eat at the restaurant (difficult to find anywhere else to eat) and order two £2.95 side dishes you will get charged £12.35, despite trying to explain to the staff that the maths doesn't work and there is only one salad priced on the menu. Avoid the restaurant!
"An anniversary treat after lockdown"
Just spent an amazing 3 days at the Black Horse Kirkby Fleetham what a gem amazing food staff who could not do enough for you, room amazing Black Bess huge room with a fridge huge en suite and a bonus your own terrace that was all lit up at night highly recommended we will be back
"Black horse inn"
Comfortable hotel run by friendly owner and staff who went out of their way to make us feel welcome. The staff provided a great service, the food was delicious and the room was very Comfortable. Overall very pleased with our trip.
"Our first stay away after lockdown eased."
The members of the Black Horse Inn were very welcoming. The inn was in a lovely village that was well kept. Mark and Steve made us feel very welcomed and took the time to chat with us. Very please with the food we had although the prices on the menu were a little on the high side as were the drinks. The rooms were very roomy and in good order and the bed was very comfortable. Because of the current pandemic the rooms could not be cleaned during the stay but that was not a problem. Definitely will be back there and would recommend it to others.
"Clean beyond our expectations, comfy, classy and cracking menu too."
We booked as needed to go from one end of the country to the other, and taking the dog so we like to stop half way to ensure it isn't to much for her. Coronavirus was a worry but we decided we would clean upon arrival, we felt a bit like we were on 4 in a bed, but the place was completely spotless, the spray went on and then everything wiped, the wipe was as clean as when I got it out the packet, so domestic staff are doing a fab job. We then went to use the restaurant, it was early so we didn't need to book. We had a nose around on arrival and I think all the tables we saw were well distanced apart, even the tables in the beer garden. It helped make us feel at ease and we were able to enjoy a delightful meal. We both had a pasta dish, a side of garlic bread eaxh and a glass of wine each and it came to just £24.00! the menus they are using are desposable and the food was good high end gastro pub. I had king prawns, risky as sometimes they end up curled up and tough but these were succulent and fresh. My O/H had mushroom tagliatelle and it was rich, earthy and had a nice variety of different mushrooms. The setting is a lovely village, quiet and good green spaces to walk a dog, parking not an issue, wish I had known about this place before, everything has exceeded expectations. Staff are friendly too, Its a village pub so nice chilled ambient pub with a good feel. Good food, good value and we will be back.
"Life after lockdown"
We visited The Black Horse Inn at the very beginning of July. It was our first trip away since the covid 19 lockdown, and the first week the hotel and restaurant opened since march too. I couldn't really fault our visit at all. Obviously, with social distancing and other measures in place, things are slightly different. What I really liked though, was how natural they made it feel. Nothing was too over the top / in your face, it was a very relaxing environment and I felt incredibly comfortable. So well done on that front. After reading through many reviews before we booked, it was mentioned that the Shergar room was one of the best. So I requested this room. It was lovely, tucked away, with your own little garden. Nice and large room. Lovely furniture. Bathroom was lovely. Excellent shower plus the added benefit of a roll top bath too, which is wonderfully relaxing with a glass of prosecco. I love small independent places where each room is different and has its own character with little nick-nacks dotted around. It's a little gem of a place. My only critical point to make is the fridge. It's awful. Really out of place in the room. It's loud. Unsightly and ruins the look and feel of the room. It needs housing in its own cupboard or get rid! Other than that. A faultless room. We had dinner in the restaurant, food was outstanding and would recommend anyone to eat there whether you are staying or not. Breakfast was brilliant, home made secret recipe black puding was amazing!! Would highly recommend to anyone, and we would love to return again too. Thank you to Steven and Rosie for making our short stay so lovely, and making us feel so welcomed.
Rosie Bell, Sales at Black Horse Inn, responded to this review
Many thanks for your wonderful feedback. The Black Horse has really missed all our customers and it is so so good getting back into the saddle. Your glowing review was very well received by the whole team who have worked so hard to ensure we opened safely. Thank you for the fridge feedback. We normally gave fresh milk and orange juice to customers and kept them in the fridge. Our regular customers really appreciate the added luxury of having a fridge in the room. That aside. So pleased you enjoyed your stay and new hope to welcome you back again in the near future.
"Nice place but poor service"
My girlfriend and I stayed here in April 2019. I have finally got around to writing reviews of the places we have been. We stayed for 2 nights and the accommodation was lovely. We had seen it on Four in a bed and were excited for it. The first night we had a nice meal and a few drinks on the site and chilled in the room. Second night was a different story as they had a huge party on. There was no mention of this prior and the restaurant and bar were pretty much out of action. If you have been to the area you will know there is not much else to do so we were forced to stay in our room from 8pm onwards and then kept awake by loud music until 1.30am. We had still enjoyed it although this has left a sour taste. We complained next morning in a nice manner and would be assured the manager would call us. Despite two emails later we never heard from them. It's a shame as I would have gone back as the accommodation and food were lovely aside from the party. It is just a shame that they don't take their customers seriously enough.
"What a find!"
As I have been very apprehensive about a knee replacement operation on Friday 13th, my husband, bless him, looked for an overnight stay that wasn't too far from our home in Sheffield. The weather was brilliant, the journey good and the Black Horse Inn very good. Our accomodation, in one of the terraced cottages was really ourstanding. Not only beautifully designed but with everything you could possibly need for a comfortable stay. (Including Curley Wurleys!!!) We sat in the bar and enjoyed excellent wine before going into the stylish dining room. An amazing contrast from the old village pub decor round the bar complete with welcoming open fire! We had Sunday lunch which was served until 8pm and was possibly one of the best we have ever eaten! After a good nights sleep we enjoyed a really BIG breakfast. Again superb! I was a bit limited in mobility to travel far around the area but, given the lovely garden outside, we hope to return later in the Spring when, hopefully, I can walk!!! A real find!!!! (And must mention the collection of seaside postcards in the toilets. A really good idea for a long sit!!!!
Rosie Bell, Sales at Black Horse Inn, responded to this review
What a review! Thank you for your kind words and your attention to detail. The chefs were delighted to be told that your sunday lunch was the best you had ever eaten! That is a huge compliment Our Curly Wurleys are so popular with all guests and defiantely lure guests back time after time.
"Friendly and good value"
We had an enjoyable overnight stay and a very pleasant evening meal. There was a wide selection of freshly prepared food available at both the evening meal and breakfast. The staff provided excellent customer service and were very friendly. Overall, very good value for money and highly recommended

"Still lovely"
We had a large family party here a few years ago and then went back again as a smaller group. Everything was fab but for one reason or another we haven't been back for a little while. Went with friends last Friday and I'm very happy to report the place is still great, staff, food and decor still top drawer. Highly recommended. Love the new sculpture, but a bit surprised the creepy mannequins are still features of the beer garden!!!
Rosie B, Front Office Manager at Black Horse Inn, responded to this review
Thrilled you like our beautiful steed at the front of the pub. The rusty nag is proving very popular. As for our mannequins they have been on a gap year but recently returned. They are very much like marmite with both staff and customers but always generate lots of discussion which is the sole purpose of their being. Thank you for your top draw review it is much appreciated. Please do not leave it too long until your next visit.
"Was going well until the desert arrived - felt totally ripped off"
I would have reviewed this as average however. The mains were nice, the suet pudding did not have enough gravy on nor given an extra pot and couldn't find the girl to ask for more (pub was really busy at the bar). However, 3 of us opted for the 'deconstructed lemon meringue pie'. This was literally a square of lemon curd and very strange meringue that had been flattened in to 3 (yes 3) miniature squares ... what one of our guests described as a form of 'eating A4 paper'. It was exceptionally an 'rip off' at 6.95 each. Worth only 2.50 if that. Not nice to feel ripped off but this pudding was a disgrace to charge that amount for what was not a lemon meringue. Our expection was something like an 'eton mess'. Won't return.

"Best Porridge Ever!!!!!"
We stayed here overnight. The accommodation is quirky but there was everything we could need in our room. The staff were all very friendly and helpful and couldn't do enough for us. The evening meal and breakfast were lovely and my husband said his porridge was the best he's ever tasted. He's still talking about it 3 days later!!! We would definitely recommend the Black Horse.
Rosie B, Front Office Manager at Black Horse Inn, responded to this review
That really is a Goldilocks review! The chefs are thrilled with this compliment and are very grateful that you have taken the time to share your feedback with the trip advisor world. We look forward to welcoming you back soon.
"Excellent lunch"
Found this pub on ‘Good Pub Guide' and is well worthy of its recommendation. Quiet Tuesday lunchtime, we and our dog were made very welcome and shown to a lovely room with bar and open fire. Excellent Timothy Taylor's beer and a really good Shiraz by the glass. Set menu (2 courses for a bargain £11.95) although slightly limited, all the choices looked appealing. We had slow cooked lamb shoulder with haggis Bon-Bon, served with a barley risotto. Absolutely delicious!! We chose custard tart with poached rhubarb and toasted coconut for afters - faultless! Definitely our go-to in that part of the world and hope to return soon. Please don't lose the chef!!
Rosie Bell, Sales at Black Horse Inn, responded to this review
Thank you for your excellent review. Our market menu represents great value for money and is very popular at both lunch time (1200 - 1430) and during the early evening (17000 - 1830). Hope you had a successful shopping trip in Northallerton and we look forward to welcoming you back when you are next in the area.
"Best Turned Out Horse!"
Lovely overnight break in a quiet village. Accomm is quirky but first class. Pub is detached (closely) away from the rooms which was useful. Attentive staff. Dog was welcome which really helps. Great beer and top nosebag in the bar area!
Rosie Bell, Sales at Black Horse Inn, responded to this review
Thank you for your review. Kirkby Fleetham is a lovely rural village which boasts an incredible location. Our team in the kitchen are cooking with gas at the moment and our nosebag is really proving very popular with visitors from near and far. They really have the bit between their teeth!
"Never fails to amaze"
This is our second visit to this wonderful place , we've just had 3 nights in a beautiful new room ‘frankle' which was absolutely beautiful, plush , comfortable .. ‘a little wow' in the stunning coach house. The meals in the restaurant are stunning and staff really lovely. I can't recommend this lovely place enough.
Rosie Bell, Sales at Black Horse Inn, responded to this review
It was very much our pleasure to entertain you and we are thrilled to receive your glowing review. Our newly appointed Coach House has 7 bespoke bedrooms which are all individually decorated and have been very well received by all our guests. Your room Frankle is my favourite with its incredible colour scheme and wow bedroom furniture. We very much look forward to your next visit.
"A hidden gem"
What an amazing stay. I booked this as a suprise for my husband for our anniversary and I can honestly say I was not disappointed. Upon arriving staff were friendly, room was beautiful, evening meal was superb and breakfast was excellent. I have already recommended to others and I know I will certainly be coming back.
Rosie Bell, Sales at Black Horse Inn, responded to this review
Praise indeed. So pleased you enjoyed your stay with us. The Black Horse is very popular for birthday and anniversary treats. We have a cracking team here that take great delight in ensuring all guests are made to feel very much at home and return time after time. We look forward to welcoming you back for your next anniversary!
"Beautiful rooms,delicious breakfast"
We stayed in the annexe, the room was beautifully decorated and the nice extras e.g. bathrobes, fresh milk & laundry we're much appreciated. Staff were very friendly and the made to order breakfast was delicious. We had dinner there on two nights and those meals were very good too. One little thing that would have been lovely would have been cheap slippers as due to the almost ever present wind, the bathroom was very chilly.
Rosie Bell, Sales at Black Horse Inn, responded to this review
So pleased you enjoyed your stay with us. We have a cracking team that enjoy delighting our guests with their generous hospitality. We have been asked to provide many items in the bedrooms over the years but this is a first for slippers! Very much look forward to welcoming you back soon.
"Great Stay, Food was Amazing however not impressed by the dog at breakfast........."
Would have given a 5* review as the room was amazing, the food absolutely awesome, bar area friendly, great staff BUT.....realise it is a dog friendly place but to have a dog in the breakfast area licking the table and wandering around the table next to us is not quite the health and hygiene we were looking for....maybe this should addressed as we don't all love dogs - especially around our meals!
Rosie B, Front Office Manager at Black Horse Inn, responded to this review
Thank you very much for your review. We take feedback very seriously. Dogs are very welcome at the Black Horse and are presently allowed in the restaurant for breakfast as all facilities are in this room. We hope this will not deter you revisiting us in the future.
"Excellent dog friendly pub/hotel"
We arrived in pouring rain during storm Denis. We were asked to wait a few minutes whilst our room was sorted out but this was because we were 'up graded' to a larger ground floor room as we had our dog with us. a splendid evening even though the place was busy (it was valentines day) a delightful meal, comfortable room with lots of little touches that were lovely. Breakfast was amazing.
Rosie B, Front Office Manager at Black Horse Inn, responded to this review
So pleased we managed to get you into a bigger room with your dog. The Shergar Suite is ideal for guests and their dog due to the access outside. In the summer it is very special with the private garden area. We now have another similar room in our new Coach House called Black Bess with its own private garden.
"Wonderful Night Away"
Had a wonderful night away at this lovely friendly country pub. The room was beautiful the food was fantastic and all the staff so lovely. It is a real find as it's only an hour away. There were four of us (2 couples) and we booked it last minute. We decided to book a table for 8.30pm and had a few drinks in the bar beforehand. Such a friendly place and the bar staff were really attentive. Our waiter when we had out meal was great fun and brilliant at his job. Breakfast was absolutely superb. And all provided again with a smile. The room was beautiful we stayed in the part outside of the main building our room was the Tiger Roll room. Pics attached. Will 100% be back. Thank you to all that looked after us.

"Hidden gem"
We arrived to be given a really lovely welcome. We were then shown to a very nice room, which was spacious and very comfortable. It was late afternoon when we entered the bar which was reasonably busy considering the time of day and enjoyed a drink in very pleasant surroundings. Dinner was delicious, some of the best food we have tasted and we have eaten in some very nice places. Breakfast was served in the lovely retaurant where we had eaten dinner and again was delicious. During the whole of our stay all of the staff were really warm and wecoming. We can't wait to visit this hidden gem again soon.
Rosie B, Front Office Manager at Black Horse Inn, responded to this review
The Black Horse is often described as a hidden gem which makes us giggle as we are only 10 minutes away from the A1. Thank you for your glowing review. We are very lucky to have a great team here both back and front of house who take great delight in looking after our guests.
"Fab pub with beautiful rooms"
We just got back from 2 nights here and loved it. Location is great, staff are lovely, the food is delicious and not overpriced, the rooms are clean, comfortable and well equipped and there's a log fire in the bar. What more could you want? Highly recommended

So pleased you enjoyed our beautiful new rooms. They have been live since November and are proving very popular with guests. Our team in the kitchen are really cooking with gas (literally ) at the moment and are really making the old horse rock. Yesterday was a cracking example despite major weather warnings we served over 140 Sunday lunches which really is amazing. We look forward to welcoming you back soon.
"Lovely stay "
Stayed on a Saturday night with our dog Sid. Our room was very clean and comfortable, with a lovely roll top bath. Food was excellent, with a lovely breakfast in the morning. All the staff were really friendly and welcoming especially Cath, Mark and Tom. Will definitely be going back and would highly recommend this lovely pub.

"Fabulous hideaway"
We unexpectedly came across this truly fabulous hotel and restaurant, whilst browsing the internet for somewhere to stay on our weekend away. We are delighted that we did. We received a warm welcome as soon as we arrived, and from then on all the staff were wonderful Our suite was way beyond our expectations, the accommodation is what you would expect from a 5 star boutique hotel. In the evening we decided to eat in the restaurant, and we were bowled over by the ambiance and menu. The venison wellingtons was absolutely superb, as was the service. In the morning we had a wonderful breakfast, using high quality ingredients. I will most definitely return to this hidden gem very soon.

Oh bless you for writing such a great review about your stay with us. We have recently added a further seven new rooms to our stable and they are seriously delightful. So with great accommodation, service and food The Black Horse really is cooking on gas (in more ways than one!) The Venison dishes are a seasonal specialty.. Tonight's special is venison suet pudding and it looks amazing. Many thanks for taking the time to find us. We hope you will be back soon.

"Outstanding from start to finish the Black Horse is wonderful"
I have to say in many years of travel the Black Horse really impressed me, my room was nicely decorated, designed for a romantic couple and not a single guy traveling for business but nonetheless it was delightful. What made me smile when I walked in the room was that in the cups were curly wurlys, which were enjoyed with gusto with a cup of tea. The little fridge had milk, water and juice which again was a really nice touch. The staff were very nice, happy and very professional, which did stand out. The food and presentation again exceeded my expectation, truly a wonderful chef who is really focused on the food and presentation. Breakfast again was truly magnificent. Hopefully I will be back in North Yorkshire in the near future!
Rosie B, Front Office Manager at Black Horse Inn, responded to this review
Thank you so very kindly for your glowing review. I have shared it with the team here and they literally are all glowing with pride Our complimentary gifts in the room are always very much appreciated by our weary gusts but the Curly Whirly always tends to steal the show. We very much look forward to welcoming you back when you are next in the area.

"Exceptional rooms & food"
I couldn't rave any more about this fabulous little Yorkshire pub. The new rooms in the coach house have been done to an exceptional stand and completely surpassed my expectations. In addition to this the food in the pub was stunning with local meat and sausages for dinner and a huge hearty breakfast in the morning. As they allow dogs too it couldn't be rated any higher in my expectations!
Rosie B, Front Office Manager at Black Horse Inn, responded to this review
Fantastic. We all work very hard to delight our guests and receiving glowing reviews like this is exceedingly rewarding. As a country pub we welcome dogs to visit and stay with us but we do reserve some rooms for guests who have allergens. Please do return soon and make sure you try out another room

"Christmas Day"
We had a most lovely Christmas meal with the Black Horse this year! On what must be a hospitality nightmare day the atmosphere was relaxed, the staff super friendly and the food was, as usual, out of this world! Well done and thank you x

"Best Christmas Meal Ever!"
This year my self and my family decided to eat out for Christmas Day and chose to come to our favourite local The Black Horse in Kirby Fleetham where we are never disappointed with the quality and service we receive every time! And we certainly made the right choice. It was full to the rafters creating an amazing atmosphere and the smell of delicious food hovering in the air couldn't have been any better. We sat down in the restaurant egerly awaiting our Christmas Dinner, the staff where rushed of there feet but where so efficient and friendly it was a very smoothly run operation and nothing was to much trouble, even in the mist of cayuse a very welcome pot of cornflour came to my rescue to remove a stain from my new dress! very much appreciated. As for the food..... it went beyond my expectations it was truly amazing I could not fault a thing just Perfect! Perfect pub! Perfect Food! Perfect service! Perfect Christmas Day Thank you all for making this happen, see you Next Year same time !!!!!!!!!!

"Christmas with no dinner"
What a disappointment we had booked Xmas dinner for four at 1500 Only after numerous visits to the staff we we eventually seated after 1600.The staff were clearly ran off their feet we had no one available to take drinks orders or any explanation or apology When the turkey arrived for 2 people it was covered in gravy and the veg were cold we never did get the other 2 meals and by this time we'd had enough We'd booked a Christmas lunch for 4 not a relay race also a taxi had been ordered for 1730 and as the clock was approaching 1715 and no staff were around we decided to leave The staff are extremely hard working but they can only work with what they have got maybe you took on too much We have dined in many places over the Xmas and new year period be it in the UK or abroad but this experience has left a real nasty taste which is such a shame Last year we were at Middleton lodge which again it was very busy but they had the staff to cope and what a delight and a memorable time we had

"Christmas Dinner"
Well how can I describe the Christmas dinner experience.... The word shambolic. We booked a table for 4 in OCT ?? we find our selves at 1630 still waiting for our dinner then finally after several visits to complain we are at a table in the bar not restaurant. Ok we will go with that ..... Food 3rd rate cafe food Turkey clearly bought in not off the bone we paid £150 pounds in Oct for this. Food was cold and covered in gravy to disguise the turkey roll. If I wanted turkey roll I would have gone to the Co Op. What a disgrace please avoid this pub the beer might be ok its bought in but the food at christmas is a disgrace. I got my money back £160 will never be back.
Rosie B, Front Office Manager at Black Horse Inn, responded to this review
Thank you your review. We use the highest quality products and our turkey crown was locally supplied and has been admired throughout the Christmas period. As for your other comments readers of this will see that our other reviews represent the business more accurately.
"Evening 3 course Sunday menu"
Visited on Sunday evening and unfortunately we left feeling a little disappointed. When we arrived a number of staff were near the counter nobody even said hello,so we wandered through to the bar and ordered some drinks and asked for a table for 2. We were whisked straight through to the dining room and seated straight away then handed a piece of a4 paper with a 3 for 19.95 menu on it. We would have liked to have ordered some wine with our meal but no list was on the table and the waiter never offered. We ordered prawn cocktail and a black pudding starter. The prawn cocktail, cheapest possible small prawns on a tiny amount of shredded lettuce with half a plum tomato i initially thought the tomato had been charr grilled as it appeared a little shrivelled and black in places but upon eating it I realised that no it was just off. Main course of traditional beef was a little better and served with a huge Yorkshire pudding but although it was visually impressive it needed the small jug of extra gravy as it was as dry as sticks to eat. Beef was lovely and tender and served pink, but 2 sprouts each 2 roast potatoes 3 carrots each although cooked very nicely etc had I only had a main course I'd of had to eat again when I got home. During our meal we had to go to the bar to get our own drinks at the start of our main course we asked for some more drinks to be served at the table these still hadn't arrived upon finishing our main course and we had to request them again. Sticky toffee pudding was pleasant enough but pretty dull presentation. As for the staff the guy with a beard was pleasant and friendly but appeared to be doing the bulk of the work as another member of the team spent the whole evening only fussing over one table of 4 who she appeared to know. I went to the bar to order drinks during our meal 2 staff members looked at me and walked off to do other things so I had to interrupt the chap with his head in the computer to serve me. So to summarise our bill for lunch and drinks came to £66 not bad at all but the service and food wasn't up to our expectations at all.

"Amazing hidden little gem"
Food, room and service all excellent. Well worth a visit. The decor in the room was very chic, our room had a bath in it. The Sunday lunch and breakfast were absolutely delicious we could not fault the food or the service
Rosie B, Front Office Manager at Black Horse Inn, responded to this review
Many thanks for your review. The Black Horse often gets called a hidden gem and this is despite it only being 10 minutes off junction 51/52 on the A1M. So pleased you enjoyed your stay. Please make it a New Years Resolution to visit us again soon.
"Brilliant Sunday lunch"
Visited today with my wife & three year old and really enjoyed it. The pub has a very nice country feel to it with open fires, stone floors etc. We had food off the Sunday lunch menu which we found to be good value for money at £16.95 for two courses or £19.95 for three. I had the game and wiled mushrooms terrine for my starter and roast beef for my main. The food was of the highest standard and couldn't find a fault with it if I tried. All the staff that served us where very friendly and welcoming. Over all we really enjoyed our visit and look forward to going back.
