« pleasant stay at this hotel »

staff where very friendly and helpful had a lovely room though a bit dated the bed was comfortable and the room was spacious we would definitely stay here again, shops near by and plenty of places to drink eat and drink the harbour is not to far away and is lovely, their is parking across the road from hotel but don't forget to get permit from hotel

    « Extremely disappointed »

Myself and my family have staying at this hotel for the last 15 years and in recent years watching the decline. Not sure if this is due to Best Western chain? Have just returned from my annual 2 day stay and am still trying to warm up. No heating or hot water on Friday or Saturday, hotel fully aware of the problem but didn't offer guests heaters unless they asked for them. Additional quilt was needed. There was not one area within the hotel that was comfort able enough to sit and relax to have a drink despite no heating there is no lounge lobby area. A cold rough and ready sports bar. The function we attended last night was a private charity function and the room was feeezing, my mum and aunt in their late 70's had to sit with their coats on all night - disgusting. Other unrelated guests also suffering the same. Room 101 is a suit, last year there was problems with plumbing in the sink, thus was reported, but tge same issue still exists this year. Clearly on going maintenance issues . There was no apology from the staff, no acknowledgement from the hotel that our stay may not have been a comfortable one. Shame on you Best Western at least 10 guests that wont be returning. The only plus I can say was the chef excelled himself in providing a fantastic meal at the ball......

    « Mixed as always. »

I have stayed at the grand hotel several times over recent years. It's always a mixed bag. The rooms are a good size and some of them have been updated quite nicely. On this particular visit I had as always booked a room with a bath but on arrival after a seven hour drive found I had a room with a shower. This was resolved quickly enough but nonetheless it was careless. The room itself is large but only has a wardrobe and a mirror in it as furniture so no drawers of any description. Also The bathroom was very very small the door opening bang against the bath as you went in. Just about acceptable but no more. Breakfast was above average though the service to take my order was slow. The key to staying in this hotel in my view is the price. At £75 per night I consider this to be good value and without the irritations I mentioned above I would have given it four stars for value. I have stayed here at busier times and paid £100 but this is poor value

« Don't stay here if you need to get to sleep on Friday or Saturday night »

While the hotel is well situated, with good attentive staff and pleasant decor, the noise emanating from the nightclub on the ground floor is beyond a joke. In a room on the top floor, the music might have well as been in the room next door.

    « Nice hotel »

Just got back from an overnight stay for a friend's wedding ?? had a great time hotel was brilliant staff nice an friendly massive rooms we did book executive got a good deal on booking com could do with a spruce up on a few thing like the outside not very well presented specially all the seagulls mess on the building and on your car but all in all ten out of ten see you again

    « Lovely spacious room »

The young lady on reception was lovely and polite and greeted us in a friendly manner. Our room was 222 which was very spacious with a king and a double bed to choose from. Bathroom could definitely do with some updating. The shower was only Luke warm.I found a deliberate mistake in the middle of the night when I went for a cup of cold water Industry standard says cold to the right. This is for Anyone that is visually impaired. Not a big thing just really annoying when it's dark and it tasted horrid Tea / coffee and biscuits in the room Overall a value for money stay and enjoyed the marina especially Portals for food

« Good for the weekend. »

We stayed here as were in town for a family members birthday. Nice old style hotel with very approachable staff that made us feel welcome. Had 2 rooms next door to each other as requested and they were clean and had everything we needed. Could probably do with a bit of an upgrade all round but it was still nice and did the job.

« Lovely Hotel Bags of Character »

This hotel is absolutely lovely some will say it's dated but in my opinion it adds to the character of the building and hotel, staff were friendly and very polite, in fact couldn't fault it would definitely go back loved it.

    « Average Stay »

We booked into the Grand for a family reunion - lots of us travelling and most of us staying at the hotel. We had our 18 month old son, so paid for an upgrade to give us a bit of extra room. The upgrade was definitely worth it - large and after seeing some other rooms I think we had a recently refurbished one, couldn't fault it. Clean, and with the travel cot waiting for us. Despite being on the main street and a wedding on we had no trouble with noise, although the room was quite warm. Lift was broken when we checked in, so just for peace of mind we used the stairs the rest of the weekend. Nothing the hotel could do, just us being wary of using a broken lift. Issue with the boiler in part of the hotel on the Saturday - something we weren't aware of until I called reception about lunchtime to ask if there was an issue. Receptionist was great - very apologetic, and offered me a key to another vacant room to shower and bathe my son. Due to the reunion we ate out for our stay, apart from breakfast which was good. Great waiting staff. Check out was quick, and although the receptionist hadn't been aware about the broken boiler on Saturday, she offered as a reduction on the room rate for the inconvenience. Although an okay stay, wouldn't stay again, purely based on an email received that was meant for internal use, but was actually sent to a family member. It was rude, and slating customers. Not a place I would want to stay again.

« Could do with a make over.... »

Room was nice but had a number of things that need updating/fixing to make it better. Cracks in walls and tiles etc.... The check in and out service was good and the Indian Restaurant attached was a real delight with friendly service. Overall the hotel just needs a lot of updating ti get it to a better standard. Wi-FI was good.

« Hotel with a bit of character »

Stayed here many times over the years. Seen a couple of refurbishments and changes of management. Staff always seem very friendly, and the facilities are generally up to scratch. The grand old building can appear a little 'shabby round the edges' in places, but still provides more interesting surroundings than a more modern, generic, chain hotel. The only real negative point about the place, for me, is the lack of a good air-conditioning / ventilation system. In hot weather, this can leave you with the choice of keeping windows closed and over-heating at night, or opening them to enjoy the sounds of Hartlepool's famously exuberant night-life.

« Must be the friendliest place »

We finished our holiday at the Best Western Grand Hotel Hartlepool, on arrival we had the best welcome of our holidays. All the staff are brilliant, room outstanding, food delicious What more do we Need.

« Nice to stay in a personalised hotel »

We stayed on a Saturday night as we'd come to a family Christening nearby. First impressions were not great as there was a very noisy wedding party taking place on the ground floor. However we couldn't hear it at all in our room on the 2nd floor. It was spacious & clean with everything we needed. Our main problem was that it was very warm (no heating on but the hot water pipes heat everywhere). We had to open the windows & we think Hartlepool is a city that never sleeps so we heard cars /shouting /singing & seagulls until the early hours! On the plus side, all the staff we met were very friendly & professional, the hotel décor is different to the standardised plastic of the modern chain hotels & it was very good value for money (a deal on Expedia). Breakfast choice was excellent & served by 2 lovely ladies -our only gripe was that most of the cooked breakfast tasted like it had been cooked for hours (only the eggs were freshly cooked). All in all would definitely stay here again when in Hartlepool.

« Worth paying the extra for »

One night stay (Saturday) prior to the Great North Run Pleasant receptionist at check-in - confirmed online booking and took payment. Recommended a local Italian restaurant (thanks). Comfy rooms and spacious bathroom with huge towels. Room was on third floor so did not experience any noise from a wedding reception taking place. Needed a high carb breakfast - Anne sorted out porridge & banana - thank you. Definitely stay again next time in area

    « Pleasant stay »

Nice clean room. Lovely bed. A bit noisy from the street during the night until 3am approx. Great location: you can walk out of the hotel and you're in the centre of Hartlepool which was ideal for us. In the hotel corridor you'll find old photos showing their staff and the town. Very nice touch! Would stay there again.

    « Lovely »

Stayed on a Saturday night, room was really big, loads of room. The bathroom had a bath with a shower over which the wife preferred! Sports bar downstairs, loads of TVs showing the football so that pleased me! Walking distance from the harbour. Will visit again.

    « Another Fantasic stay »

Once again, this was a perfect stay at The Grand. The buffet breakfast has returned (perfect for the morning after the night before). as always the staff were friendly and helpful and made me feel like I was the only guest in the hotel

    « Wedding »

The wedding food and service was great, my gripe is after being there all day and night the bouncers come in really heavy handed telling you to leave, this also happened at a wedding we attended in January 20016, I can understand that there must have been some rowdy troublesome events, but the two I have attended were very happy occasions only to be spoilt by doormen

    « place is changing »

we used to visit at least once a week for drinks sadly the powers that be had taken the dartboard down for wahatever reason but had left a table football, prices of drinks have increased too sadly we will not be returning.

    « Average Hotel »

Convenient central location in the middle of Hartlepool. Hotel is Victorian style and dated and could do with refurbishment. The seagulls make a racket all night long and can be clearly heard even when the windows are closed. Staff are friendly and helpful. Rooms are reasonably spacious but dimly lit. Breakfast choice is lacking but cooked breakfast was of good quality. Fine for business but not particularly nice for a romantic or leisurely weekend away. Not cheap, but on a par with others in the area.

    « Take A Torch »

Very poor value for £85 a night without breakfast. The lights in the room were so dim that it was impossible to read after dark. In spite of leaving the tap running for 15 minutes there was no hot water available, only just tepid. Very run down and unattractive place,

« Experience the heat of a Steel Furnace, in your room! But no points for Loyalty I'm Afraid. »

Unfortunately for this hotel, I am on a mission to highlight any establishment advertising under the 'Best Western' brand, that does not fulfil its commitment to its loyal guests. Best Western changed all their rewards scheme back in January and rather than offering loyal guests any discounts or free papers, etc. They have lauded the new 'Free Welcome Gift' and recognition as a 'Loyal Member' of their scheme. I have spent many nights since January in many different 'Best Western' hotels and have NEVER received the lauded 'Welcome Gift', and as on this occasion was not even recognised as a member, at many places. Upon arrival I handed over my rewards card, (I am a Diamond Select' member, the highest level you can achieve, based upon your loyalty). The young lady took the card, wrote the number down and then handed it back: No Welcome as a member! No Welcome Gift! No Offer of a Room Upgrade! It should be made clear that I only chose this hotel because it is part The Best Western Group. Apart from the issues with the Rewards scheme, the reception experience was pretty anyway: The lady did not ask if I had stayed at the hotel before, when I asked for directions to the lifts, I was told , "Just There' and a finger was pointed around the corner from reception. I was not asked if I wanted a wake up call or newspaper, and when I asked for a morning paper, the paper was not delivered to my room, but left without any guest or room identification, amongst all the other free papers in the restaurant, available for other guests to browse through before I arrived to claim it. Unless of course, when I complained that my paper had not been delivered, the receptionist simply handed me the one from the pile of free newspapers in the restaurant! The main issue with this Hotel, is that it is an old hotel, with old fashioned heating and radiators and it has no fans or air conditioning in the rooms, making it unbearable to sleep, sit or even stay in the room for long periods. The only other complaint, which I understand is not really the hotels fault, but should be mentioned, as advice for other guests), is that the place is plagued by seagulls, I should imagine that there is less noise and fewer seagulls, on the local landfill site! Along with the heat, they kept me awake all night and were a constant annoyance. I should state that the staff in the restaurant for breakfast, were very friendly and welcoming and were a credit to the hotel, perhaps they should give some advice on 'Customer Service' and offering a welcome, to the members of staff manning reception.

    « Another Brilliant Stay »

On check-in we were upgraded to a suite which was fantastic. The staff were friendly and helpful as always, the breakfast was cooked to perfection and the waitresses were as friendly as ever. Looking forward to my next stay already

    « Hartlepools Grandest relic »

I'm certain in its day, this was indeed a fine building, and indeed, you can still see the finery on show. But the place is in tatters. Old window frames either painted or screwed shut, never to be reopened. Huge windows, so big that the blinds the hotel has bought aren't big enough to blackout the rooms. Antiquated central heating systems with 2 inch pipes running through your room so the heating is permanently on full effectively. The pervasive stench of curry from the onsite Indian restaurant. Add to this the broken taps, missing plugs and minimal daytime parking facilities and you struggle to see how this place can justify its £70-£80 charges per night.

    « Really Poor Hotel »

Third time we have stayed here and there has been no hot water every time. Our room was stiflingly hot and the walls had big damp patches. The room hadn't been cleaned well and we found the last guests "subway" bag behind the curtains. Only redeeming feature was the very friendly staff serving breakfast.

    « Average »

We booked this hotel as we were taking our girls with us se we though this would be a treat for them. Firstly parking is a problem, at the weekend you can use the council offices car park but I don't know what you would do during the week. The hotel its self is pretty tired, our room was just OK at best with a very poor bathroom, shocking shower and the room its self was so hot. My daughters did better than we did by getting a suite but we all complained about the noise outside that basically starts at 11 pm for hours, and then of course you get woken up in the wee hours with drunk people heading to their rooms. I suppose its OK for 1 night but we could not have stayed any longer. The bar is really set out for the locals and is from what we saw the place to be after 11PM. The staff are nice and friendly though.

    « Grand Hotel Hartlepool. »

Got a great deal on a suite for a couple of nights. The room was huge. There was plenty of space and the furniture really comfy. The decor around the hotel is in need of a little TLC in places but certainly not scruffy by any means. The rooms were warm and the staff were excellent at all times. We dined in the Indian restaurant which is technically located in the cellar. Again the staff were warm and friendly and the food was enjoyable. The bar area was very busy due to England playing. The atmosphere was good humoured and the staff worked hard to keep everyone happy. On the whole no complaints.

    « Wild Western »

This hotel certainly labours under the delusion of grandeur. We stayed here 2 weeks ago and found the place to be highly overpriced for what it is. Fixtures & fittings as so outdated they'd make the Bates Motel look hi-tech. The room and indeed the hotel throughout was dirty and care worn. After attending to business in the early hours we returned to find the area outside the hotel near the front door an absolute disgrace. We were greeted by vomit and broken glass and cigarette ends all of the front entrance at around 03.00 hrs. These were not removed in a fashion until at least 10.00 hrs. Breakfast was more like the fayre you'd expect for a hotel full of contractors, which is probably its stable form of income during the week! Most staff are polite and helpful but we found the hotel manager extremely unwelcoming if not down right rude on our next visit. So much so we happily decamped to another chain hotel in Hartlepool. Best Western, more like wild western - didn't even have record of our booking this time! You will not be getting my repeat custom or any recommendation. Your room rates do not reflect your facilities, the standard of housekeeping and maintenance and indeed hospitality.

« fine for a week working away from home »

the hotel is quite grand i'll give it that. the staff and service are good. The building is obviously getting on a bit - the floors creak and the bathroom was dated but the whole place has been decorated/carpeted recently and it feels clean. the radiators in the hallways are constantly on making it really warm especially as you get up to the 3rd floor. the wifi is appaling. not even able to stream youtube there is a tasty curry restaurant in the basement. not sure how much smell gets to the first floor rooms?

    « Quick visit »

Stayed for just one night in a suite. The room was massive and easily held the two double beds and sofa. The hotel transports you back in time, it has very ceilings and the lifts creaks a bit, but it all adds to the character. We will definitely book again as it was really good value for the money.

« Last minute night away »

We took advantage of an offer we saw and as it was my wife's birthday I thought it would be a good idea. We've never been to Hartlepool before. We were net by a lovely girl in reception. Very welcoming, so far so good. We had upgraded out room to an 'executive' room and I have to say I was slightly disappointed by what we were given, the pictures on website were obviously portraying their best! Having said this it was still nice, bathroom slightly tired but everything was there you could need and it was clean. The courtesy tray was well stocked and there was a hairdryer in the room. The main negative was that the room was boiling!!! The radiators were on full and the weather was lovely outside. No air con but there were two plug in blowers which we soon made use of. After a walk into the town (which we found soul-less) we returned to the sports bar and we felt only happy to have one drink there because it soon got very loud and there's were a couple of domestics going on that looked like they could escalate!! We then went to the Mumbai majestic restaurant which is situated under the hotel, what a fantastic restaurant with lovely staff. I will do a separate glowing review for this! Very comfy beds, a huge double and a separate single. Nice linen. Breakfast the next morning was waitress served which is nicer than the help yourself option. Very nice full English, the continental items my wife enjoyed as well. A very good selection. All in all probably won't return to Hartlepool but the hotel boasts some wonderful Art Deco features and only slightly falls short of living up to its name.

    « Clean and comfortable »

Had a pleasant one night stay. Room was clean and comfortable. The TV was a bit small for the room - especially given where it was mounted. The sports bar is an unusual yet welcome addition to a hotel of this type. Good choice at breakfast. Friendly staff at all times.

    « Wedding party visit »

We stayed at the Grand last Sunday night as part of my sons wedding there, We had a great day and were well catered for the hotel itself has seen grander days and in places needs some upkeep ,but the staff were great and really looked after us , the Wedding reception food was lovely as was the breakfast the next day , The room we stayed in was very large and the bed was massive and very comfortable , thanks again for a great day.

    « Highs and lows »

We spent our wedding night here in 1986 so 30 years later thought we would see what had changed. I can see how the hotel attracts such differing reviews First impressions approaching the hotel having to push past a crowd of wedding guests smoking on the front steps-no one had the common sense to let guests through with their luggage The reception staff however were very friendly and efficient and advised us to use the council car park next door which had a wall around and as was weekend would not be a problem having to vacate early next morning We had an executive room at room only rate £63 if paid in advance-for that price was OK Room a mixture of old and new-some parts like old doors and vintage plumbing adds a certain charm However the woodchip wallpaper on ceiling and old damp patches don't! Modern bed covers and blinds look good but the frayed net curtain underneath looks tacky Bathroom seems to be the same old fashioned bath from 30 years prior complete with plastic 70's style taps Toilet modern but with a cheap flimsy toilet seat that moves when you sit on it! The sports bar will come as a shock to those expecting a hotel lounge-it's open to public and full of pool tables and wipe clean surfaces which are needed with the spilled beer as people crowd in Mumbai Indian restaurant in basement but also open to public is the star of this hotel A happy hour between 5 and 7 each night where 4 courses for £10.95 Some of the nicest Indian food I've tasted and couldn't manage all 4 courses Again for the price we paid and the fun of revisiting on our 30th anniversary it was a good night but we would be unlikely to repeat

« Filming in the Ballroom »

All staff at the grand hotel were very helpful and very polite. They went out of their way to help us, which was much appreciated by us all. The ballroom was absolutely lovely and made the scene we were filming really stand out.

    « Friendly & comfortable »

The Grand is one of those old Grand Hotels that were once the life and soul of seaside towns. It retains a lot of its grandeur and the staff adhere to high standards of service. The rooms are comfortable and clean and the hotel is well situated for the harbour and attractions. We stay here every time we come to the North East on business and it does a fine job.

    « Not impressed! »

Having stayed at a "Best Western" a few months previously we decided to opt for this hotel, hoping it would offer the same service and high degree of satisfaction as we had previously encountered. We were wrong! We had a nice clean and spacious room on the third floor. (Shame it wasn't soundproofed) On returning to our room after a busy day we had been aware a wedding had taken place in the hotel during the afternoon. Due to the very loud musical sounds we presumed there was a live group appearing to end off the celebrations. We later discovered it was just a one man band. (From inside our room we could clearly hear the songs that he was singing. The noise was simply deafening). We went to a friends room on the first floor and their room literally was vibrating. We went downstairs and saw other residents who had the same opinion as ourselves. In the end we went out as we couldn't stand listening to the noise in our room, sleep would have been an impossibility. Yes, we could have complained but - it was someones special day and we didn't want to spoil things in any way. Like other guests we were of the opinion a hotel representative should have requested the sound should have been lowered. We returned around midnight and the loud music had stopped. The following morning we kept a look out for the requested newspaper outside our room door but it never appeared. Looking forward to the "Full English" treat at breakfast time I discovered that there were no fried eggs - just a large empty container. I asked the waitress if there were more supplies and she immediately attended to our requested. Sadly these arrived after we had finished. Upon checking out i was hoping to share our experiences with the Receptionist but was never asked. I did politely inform her that the newspaper had failed to arrive (it was after 10.00 by this time). She disappeared in the direction of the dining hall and re-appeared with our paper and offered her apologies. I think next time we are in the area we will look elsewhere for accommodation.

« Spacious rooms and friendly staff »

Stayed here for one night with my fiancé. Super rooms and reasonably priced. Will stay again at this hotel. Shower in the room didn't get that warm and the hairdryer did not work. We told the staff on reception and they said they would sort it and thanked us for feedback. All good!

    « Nice hotel »

Stayed here a couple of times now always a nice stay clean rooms and hotel in general. The bar shows all the sport the breakfast is well worth paying for really good. Next time we stay we will definitely try the Indian which is attached to the hotel

    « A grand old building »

Nice clean rooms, but bathrooms are fairly basic. Could do with a little bit of TLC. Helpful, polite staff. Not much parking available but it is free of charge. Great indian restaurant in the basement

« Good clean and friendly staff »

We stayed one night. Our room was large and clean. Nice old hotel, there are some photos of the hotel in its early days on walls upstairs. Staff were friendly and helpful. Good location. Value for your money. Just being picky but lift was slow?. Other than that all good.

    « A 3 Star Hotel..Nothing Better »

This is an average 3 star hotel, quite why reviewers on here rate it very good or excellent is beyond me. I had a single room for a one night stay it was functional, I expect no more and I am old enough to know you are never going to get a view in such a room. The decor and ambiance of the hotel fitted in with its 1900 build heritage and did give an insight as to why it was called the Grand. It's centrally located which is great except when until 3am in the morning the chavs are outside the front shouting at each other..friends staying at the same time had this pleasure...Staff for breakfast seemed friendly enough, cooked breakfast whilst fresh was a little tight...the sausages, or I should say chipolatas were cheap and salty, maybe that's a North East delicacy ? Was disappointed with reception, when on arrival at 1.40pm we were told we could not access the rooms until 2.00pm, and that was not because they were not ready. Consequently did not access the room till much later as had to meet up with other friends in town. Would have been pleasant to have had a quick wash and brush up before heading out especially after a 5 hour drive up. So overall average, no better or worse than I expected, and certainly not the Best Western ever, but then probably not the worst.

    « Fabulous »

Certainly the best and grand, fab time every time I go . Spotless, great atmosphere In bar, excellent restaurant. Very central. Every time we want a weekend in Hartlepool The best western grand hotel is always out first choice

« Excelent Value, Quality Service. Friendly Staff and Full Amenities »

Excellent Staff and very friendly. Nothing too much trouble even room service on a Saturday night was quick, excellent quality and brilliant value. We enjoyed it so much we stayed an extra night. I recommend this hotel to anyone needing accommodation in Hartlepool or close by.

    « Lovely hotel »

We stayed at this hotel for 2 nights lovely big room and we could see the sea !! Friendly staff couldn't do enough for us we ate in the sports bar down stairs sandwich and coffee gorgeous and breakfasts was absolutely beautiful good choice of continental and full English all in all brilliant stay definitely going back x

« Best Western Best Place »

2nd time we have stayed in this hotel, good value for money and the breakfast sets you up for the day. Staff are all very helpful nothing to much trouble. Plenty of off road parking and WiFi in all the rooms. Location is fantastic just across the road from the shopping centre and just a short walk from the retail park and football ground. The restaurant has changed to an Indian since our first stay but apart from a faint smell of curry as you go through the main doors in an evening it didn't affect the rest of the hotel.

« Great hotel lovely staff »

4-5 star really lovely hotel great breakfast fantastic room excellent staff. Only thing let it down was a little noisy downstairs music outside people in the street shouting till 3am. Not a fault of the hotel but a problem for me.

« Great Dinner Dance Venue »

I was part of a group of friends that organised a Charity Dinner Dance in the ballroom at the Grand Hotel. From start to finish the assistance from the Events Manager & her staff was second to none. They could not have been more accommodating. On the night the whole event went without a hitch. The food & service was superb, the bar pricing was most acceptable and the singer and disco provided in the package were both excellent. The event was a great success. We raised several hundred pounds for various charities and most importantly 100 guests went home very happy. We will definitely be back again next year ! Highly recommended for functions such as ours.

Just returned from a nights stay in this hotel - at the rate of £97.50 per night b/b I think this hotel is vastly over-priced. No hot water in the shower and a really very noisy bathroom when using toilet or shower. On the positive side, the breakfast was good and the waiting on staff and reception staff were very good. This hotel nearly gets it right but not quite and as already mentioned is not worth £97.50 per night.

    « Another Excellent Stay »

Once again the world's hottest hotel excelled itself. The check-in staff were friendly and helpful, the hotel was immaculately clean and the breakfast was perfect. I would recommend this hotel to anyone looking for somewhere to stay in Hartlepool.

    « Christmas Night Out »

Just to let you know that I and my friends had a brilliant night on the 15th January 2016. It was great music and a very good atmosphere. The food was lovely, hot warm and presented nicely on the plate, which only added to the enjoyment to the meal. Congratulation on what we thought was a very successful night, to your planning and to the staff.

    « Great birthday night »

Went out in Hartlepool for my birthday. The hotel is a very high spec place. Lives up to the expectations I had for it. The rooms are spacious and comfortable. You can't hear any noise from the sports bar below. Overall a fantastic place to stay and in the centre of the main nightlife.

« Rockin the night away in Hartlepool »

We stayed in one of the Junior suites when visiting the adjacent Hartlepool Town Hall to enjoy a fantastic gig by the Kast Off Kinks!. The room was very warm and clean, a king size bed, and a great breakfast, quick service, friendly staff. Not the best value for money when comparing it to outside bar prices and eateries. Large sports type bar open to non residents. We have nothing negative to say about this hotel as we enjoyed our night out in Friendly good value for money Hartlepool.

« Decent stay but not for long stay »

I have stayed a few times because the staff are so lovely but I havn't had any hot water the past few stays. I rang up before I arrived and asked if there was any problems with the hot water, I was advised no so me and my partner went along for a nice night away, reception staff on arrival were lovely, was told I had a free upgrade to an executive so was well chuffed, got to the room, was not an executive at all and no hot water!! Had to fill the kettle up numerous times to have a hot bath, next morning shower was freezing so ended up leaving without a shower. Would stay again definitely as staff are lovely but please can I have hot water????

    « Works Christmas party »

Went here for our work Christmas party, there were roughly 38 of us. For £35 we got soup for starter which may as well just have been water with a potato in, it was so bland. Our main was basically a microwave meal, the mash was similar to school, you know when it feels like there's still a jacket potato in your mash? Yeah that was the mash. I must give credit where it's due, the dessert was decent but I'm not sure what it was, it was passed off as shortcake but I'm still not entirely sure. Overall the food was so poor, I wasn't best pleased as I had purposely not ate too much during the day because I thought it was going to be a big portion and nice tasting food. How wrong could I possibly be? The queue for the drinks was so stupidly managed, also when you got to the front, the bar staff were quite rude and blunt. I upgraded my drinks package for £5 which was probably not worth it looking back but hey ho. We all unanimously decided that we definitely wouldn't be going there again and I won't be recommending this place to anybody. Merry Christmas

    « Nightmare! »

So the first thing to say is the staff are extremely friendly. However... 1. There was no hot water in my room or in any of the rooms on my floor. The staff found me a room that I showered in that delayed me by 45 minutes and involved me walking half way across the hotel at 730am. 2. It's 11pm and my room is vibrating from the noise of the party happening in the hotel downstairs. I'm delivering a training course tomorrow morning and I'm so tired. No idea when it's going to stop butt doesn't sound like it will any time soon. 3. My room is freezing but there is a fan heater that I've switched on as the radiator isn't working. 4. Breakfast was nice. 5. The rooms are very clean and comfortable for a short stay. 6. Parking for the weekend is ok but apparently not easy during the week. 7. I will never stay here again, ever.

    « Would recommend... »

Loved my stay here. The room was decorated with a modern touch, plenty of tea and coffee and a decent sized kettle and mugs. My only issue with the room was that the light switches by the bed didn't work so couldn't switch main light off other than by the switch near the door. Had a takeaway from Mumbai! Huge portions and excellent food. Shame that I couldn't stay longer. Overall the staff and accommodation was fab. Would recommend

« Large room, fantastic food »

The room was really spacious but TV was a bit too small/far away from the bed and it could've done with a larger desk. Free wifi always a bonus. The Indian restaurant downstairs is easily the best Indian food I've had in a long time, and the early bird menu is fantastic value.

    « Huge rooms »

Good value midweek stay. My huge room looked as if it had quite recently been refurbished and was comfortable and spotlessly clean. The staff were helpful and friendly and the breakfast was good. Had a reasonable curry in the Indian Restaurant downstairs. Car parking was a bit odd - very limited spaces in the public car park over the road.

    « Not bad.. »

We stayed at the grand after a wedding and overall its a nice 3* hotel, the rooms are very spacious and clean, the staff are friendly and helpful and its in a good central location with decent parking provisions. The rooms have large, comfortable beds but are a little rough around the edges - our dressing table lamp didnt appear to work and the screen door for the shower doesnt stay in place for example. The shower wasnt the best either at a little more than a trickle, but it was hot and again the bathroom was very clean. Breakfast wasn't great as we'd requested it sent to the room and most of it was cold by the time it arrived. I think that if we were to stay again, we'd probably opt to eat elsewhere. Overall though, we had a good nights sleep and £60 for a very central hotel isnt a bad price.

    « Nice hotel »

Nice hotel and good facilities in the room tv, coffee station, big comfy bed. Friendly staff only downfall the room was so hot we did have a fan but felt the room was a little warm when trying to sleep. There was noise from the bar below but that finished at around 11.30

« Sort the car parking out »

Good people, poor parking, hotel little tired, loud locals, tatty décor not great value for money staff need some training on customer service. restaurant really good service in that part was great. Staff really helpful food outstanding

    « A nights stay »

Stayed here last week , booked because Hartlepool isn't awash with great hotels , big old place with big old rooms , had a great curry in the in-house curry house , nice food . The only issue I had was that the room was far too hot and the radiators couldn't be changed , would prefer an option to change temp's , other than that good hotel .

    « Great rooms. »

Amazing room. Spacious, modern and clean. Disappointed with the noise from the evening entertainment. Although it stopped at midnight, I was on the 3rd floor and could clearly hear every song being sung... And couldn't get to sleep until then.

    « Folk Festival accomodation »

We spent 3 nights here during the Hartlepool Folk Festival. The staff were, without exception, delightful. We were made to feel welcome and nothing seemed to be too much trouble for them. The hotel has been updated pretty well, but there are always compromises; the lift is a bit clunky and slow, the heating system lacks finesse. Having said that, the hotel overall is a very comfortable place to stay with decent size rooms with very comfortable beds, a decent, freshly cooked breakfast and free wi-fi. Parking is a bit of a lottery; we arrived at about 4pm and there were no hotel spaces left in what is otherwise a pay & display car park but the receptionist gave us the cash for the pay & display which we greatly appreciated. Over the weekend the parking is fine as the council car park is available. The hotel is well situated and public transport works well so not much need to move the car once you have arrived. This was our first trip to Hartlepool and our lasting impression will be of a very friendly welcome.

« Stayed there when I was at Hartlepool Folk Festival »

Stately old character hotel.Comfy warm king size bed. Bathroom facilities fine.Parking a in council car park slightly awkward arrangement. The young female receptionist was so charming and quietly efficient.Public transport from the hotel to the Headland where the festival was happening.Excellent breakfast menu and charming waitresses.Cost of £40/night with breakfast was a deal with the festival organization

« Could do with a refurb in the rooms, but overall ok! »

I stayed here on Saturday night with my boyfriend as we were attending an engagement party in Hartlepool for some family/friends. The hotel on arrival was nice and the reception area all looked very modern. Check-in was a bit of a faff as the girl that dealt with our paperwork overly confused everything and didn't really have a clue what was going on when actually it was quite straight forward. The hotel is a very old building and the massive keys were given to us to unlock our rooms which felt very old fashioned...but not a problem. Our room was very spacious and the decor was all lovely. Tea/Coffee/Hot Chocolate/Biscuits were all provided, Hair dryer and TV provided, bed very comfy but the complaint we have would be the bathroom. The shower was very poor and only in the morning did we actually have hot water (and I say hot, it was more luke warm). Bar within the hotel was good. Cheap alcohol and there was a band on which were actually really good. We didn't pay for breakfast but other members who we knew that stayed at this hotel, did pay for the breakfast and said it really wasn't that great for the price. It was VERY slow service and there were not enough tables to seat everyone in the breakfast room. It wasn't a self service normal type of breakfast but one that you had to order and the service was very slow (only 2 waitresses on for the full room). I would stay here again if I had to as it seems to be the better hotel in hartlepool but overall wasn't that impressed in the end. First impressions good but after a night there, it wasn't as good as it looked initially.

« Our stay at Grand Hotel »

We stayed at Grand Hotel in October for one night. We had a double room, which was very comfortable, clean and had all the facilities you would expect to see in a Best Western hotel. Breakfast was good, you could have continental and full English. We did not use the bar or restaurant on site as we were out on the evening. Staff was pleasant and I liked the fact that it is an old building, it looked very nice from outside. Car park is free opposite the hotel, you get a pass when you check in.

    « Lovely stay. »

Stayed for 1 night in an executive room. Very comfortable room with everything you need supplied. Great reception and fantastic friendly staff throughout the hotel. Spotless room 321. Thanks to the housekeeping staff. The only other comments are the room was very warm but the windows did open and a big fan was in the room. The temperature of the shower was only just acceptable. We enjoyed our stay and will use this hotel again. I highly recommend it. Thank you .

« OK for an overight stop »

Very friendly staff. Had a good night sleep. Room and facilities were fine for an overnight stop. Parking was easy, Would stop here again if I was travelling in the area. Good stop off point for onward travel.

« Back to its Usual High Standards »

The last time I stayed at this hotel the breakfast was terrible which was the first time this has ever happened. I'm please to say that the breakfast was back to its usual high standards. As always, the hotel was perfect and amazing value for money.

    « Amazing wedding venue »

We had our wedding reception here on June 6th 2009.. It was perfect from start to finish.. The room was laid out how we wanted and me and my husband made a grand entrance down the stair case to our waiting guests.. We had exclusive use of the smaller rooms downstairs for the buffets and the dj was good too.. Our day was perfect and I always recommend the hotel to our friends who are getting married

« Curry, Cobra and a bed for the night ? this really is pure heaven! »

Any hotel with an Indian restaurant has to be worthy of consideration. What can be better than an Indian meal without the hassle of having to drive home afterwards? Hartlepool's Best Western Grand Hotel is home to Mumbai, an Indian restaurant chain ? according to the hotel's receptionist ? but whether a chain or an independent it has to be the way ahead for the British hotel industry when you consider that Indian food is the new steak and kidney pie. Normally when I stay in a hotel with a grand name ? be it The Grand Hotel or the Majestic or something similarly lofty ? I'm often disappointed, as the hotel tends not to deliver on some aspect implied by its name. I expect there to be rough edges. But while I strained my eyes to find something out of place or not in keeping with the word ?grand' I was hard-pushed to find anything worth mentioning. The check-in was simple, the receptionist friendly. The room was way above expectation: large and roomy, everything worked, including the WiFi and the shower and the television (on which I watched Top Gear while waiting for my dinner companion). Could anything be better than this? Top Gear, a curry and a decent night's kip? I was in hotel heaven. The Grand Hotel Hartlepool is brilliant and I advise anybody embarking upon a trip to Teesside to consider it as a base for his or her stay in the North East. It lives up to its name; it has plenty of polished wood and creaky floors and a large stained glass window on the first floor landing ? all classic ingredients of a ?grand hotel'. In addition to Mumbai, there's a large sports bar ? not my scene, but that's beside the point. When I checked out the receptionist told me that there was an Italian restaurant prior to Mumbai's arrival so I'm guessing that the food and beverage operation here has always been good. Breakfast was good too, although I started to wonder, as I made my way downstairs, whether the most important meal of the day would be served in the Indian restaurant. I hoped not as I couldn't face the smell of Indian food first thing in the morning. Fortunately, the hotel had thought this through; there was a dedicated (and very pleasant) breakfast room adjacent to the front desk on the ground floor. As with most hotels there was a choice of a cooked breakfast or the continental offering of cheese, fresh fruit, bread and cereal. I opted for both but had as my cooked option scrambled egg on toast. Prior to this I had Coco Pops, tea, fresh fruit and a fudge-flavoured yoghurt. The breakfast service was friendly and unobtrusive, just the way I like it. Checking out was also trouble-free. I left my suitcase behind the front desk and briefly explored the Middleton Grange shopping centre across the road ? it's the same as any other shopping centre (or mall) in the UK. I enjoyed Hartlepool and could have done with an extra night at the Grand Hotel, as there's plenty to explore in the locality. I suppose the only problem with spending more than one night is the thought of two Indian meals in a row, but there's always the sports bar and I'm sure there are plenty of restaurants nearby too.

« Lovely hotel, shame about the sports bar »

We stayed 2 nights for a wedding, everything was superb, just a shame there wasn't a quieter lounge with sofa's to relax in without the damn football on. A nice treat was the Mumbai restaurant, got to be the best i've had for a long time, staff were great, service fab.

    « Give it a miss folks. »

Nowhere to sit and have a drink. Sports bar heaving, very little seating. The whole place needs some TLC. Reasonable breakfast ruined by stone cold plates, when warm ones requested I received nothing but a blank expression.

« Need to do something about the bar... »

We booked an executive room which was a big room on the corner of the hotel. It was clean and had recently been decorated. On check in we were warned that a band was playing in the bar that night and should be finished before midnight. Surely, this is information that should be imparted on booking when you have the option of going elsewhere, not on check in. We were on the third floor and not directly above the bar but could feel the music through the floor. We had arranged to meet family in the bar. They remembered the bar from its glory days and were quite dismayed by the music which was so loud we could not talk to each other - and this was before the band started. If might be better midweek. The hotel was certainly value for money, but the bar needs to be improved as the noise effects guests whether they use it or not.
