"Appalling customer service - simply rude"

Pricey007, Nottingham, United Kingdom 02/03/2020

I would never have dreamed of writing a review had I not been so disgusted with the attitude of the team member on reception I just spoke to when I tried to book a groupon afternoon tea I had been given as a gift. Having advised that I could not see any availability at all on line to book the voucher, the team member in a most rude and discourteous manner said ‘well the manager has probably elected to remove any available capacity so you simply can't have it', even though there is plenty of time left on my voucher to redeem it. When I asked if the team member could check if this was correct, she simply said ‘no', with no offer of help, apology or anything, she simply wasn't interested. I am now being forced to call the friend who kindly gifted my the voucher to ask her if she can gain a refund. I would not recommend and will certainly not use this hotel again, as if this is the service you receive before you arrive I dread to think what happens if you actually have a problem when you're there.

"Amazing service RYAN"

Pidz, Nottingham, United Kingdom 25/02/2020

I booked the afternoon tea and omg it was amazing from start to finish, Ryan looked after us and I seriously could not praise him enough! He delivered an outstanding customer service, above and beyond to what I expected, He made sure my children were happy, and that we have everything we needed, he is definitely a credit to your team I will definitely will be returning!!

Julian Saunders, General Manager at St James Hotel, responded to this review
Dear Pidz Thank you for your lovely feedback, Ryan and his team are very professional and simply want to make sure that everyone has a fabulous experience whether it be afternoon tea, lunch, brunch or dinner. Pass on to your family and friends but we do look forward to welcoming you back in the future, book directly for our best available rate. Kind regards Julian Saunders General Manager

"Afternoon Tea"

katielittle1986, Nottingham, United Kingdom 24/02/2020

Yesterday we visited the hotel using a voucher we'd been given as a gift, for afternoon tea. We were greeted by staff who seemed ok, but not overly friendly. One seemed rushed off her feet whilst there were others killing around. We were shown to our table and then promptly brought prosecco and the afternoon tea stand. The sandwiches were basic - the tiniest amount of tuna and cucumber, egg, cheese and ham - nothing special. No garnish. They were stuck together and hard to pull them apart clearly made earlier and then put in the fridge for several hours. There was one small pot of cream to share for the 2 scones and the cakes were bought in - certainly not made on site. Dry, unimaginative and nothing special. We also had to ask for tea as after half an hour we still hadn't been brought any. We also ordered hot chocolate which they said would be an additional charge. They were certainly quick to bring the bill out for that! Now I know it was a groupon voucher, but that doesn't stop you providing nice food and good service. I thought the whole point of the vouchers was the encourage people to come back? I would not recommend going here for afternoon tea - go to a nice independent cafe in nottingham instead and get better food, presentation or food and service for the same price!

Julian Saunders, General Manager at St James Hotel, responded to this review
Dear Katielittle1986 Thank you for your feedback which is quite unusual but I do take on board your comments. We do serve over 1,000 afternoon tea's a month but I can assure that we are not complacent and will be investigating your points raised. Kind regards Julian Saunders General Manager

"I wouldn't return...."

User 18/02/2020

Stayed here for work meetings, booked online after looking at the pictures and reviews however it is not as described. Rooms are tiny and I mean tiny! DO NOT, I repeat DO NOT book a ‘crash pad' room. It is literally the size of a box, you could actually reach each side of the walls with both arms. I asked to change to a standard double room which is slightly bigger however smaller than most hotels I've ever stayed in. Walls are paper thin so can hear everything next door and rooms facing. Luckily I brought ear plugs with me. Breakfast was OK, buffet style English breakfast with a continental option. The scrambled eggs looked vile so I didn't even attempt them. I didn't eat in the restaurant in the evening so can't comment on the food. Room service is £5 for the tray which I thought was too much so ordered Deliveroo. Location is OK too however I found the area (walking from the train station) to feel very unsafe. Felt very uneasy being around the hotel after dark. I would not return to this hotel as I there is many hotels of a similar price with a higher standard. Look elsewhere!

Julian Saunders, General Manager at St James Hotel, responded to this review
Dear traveller3287 Thank you for your feedback, like most hotels we do offer a crash pad which suits some budgets, the website is quite clear as to what you are paying for but our other room types, as the crash pad's are not misleading in description. Kind regards Julian Saunders General Manager

"Not as good as I thought it would be "

yasmineyvonne, London, United Kingdom 17/02/2020

Looking at the website this hotel does look much nicer in the photos then it does in real life. It is a little bit more run down when you see it in person. Our room was adequate for the money we spent, and as it was only the one night it was perfectly okay. The paint and bathroom could just do with a touch up as they are a little run down. Comfy beds though and love the little additions of toiletries and tea/coffee. Definitely worth the price for a short stay.

Julian Saunders, General Manager at St James Hotel, responded to this review
Dear Yasmineyvonne Thank you for your feedback, I was pleased to note that the new beds are going down well. Kind regards Julian Saunders General Manager

"Quality hotel."

JANETDENISE, Manchester, United Kingdom 02/02/2020

Dave on reception is superb. Difficult to find way in by car. Dave guided us in over the phone. Thanks Dave. Room very clean. Sufficient plug sockets for modern use. Just a very nice hotel. Blue badge parking. There is a door onto the shopping area of town for pedestrians.

StJamesGrimsby, Manager at The St. James Hotel Grimsby, responded to this review
Dear Guest, Thank you for your comments regarding the St James. I will be sure to pass on your comments to Dave who will be delighted with them. We are pleased to have met all your needs and look forward to welcoming you back in the future. Regards Paul George Operations Manager

"1 night stay"

76JennyR, Nottingham, United Kingdom 02/01/2020

Stayed here on a Saturday night in late December. Couldn't fault the hotel and its friendly staff. We were the only guests having breakfast so rather then it being buffet style our breakfasts were cooked to order. I just ordered eggs and bacon, which was served with 2 eggs and 4 rashers of bacon, rather than the usual 1 egg and 2 rashers of bacon. Good parking facilities and very close to the shopping centre.

StJamesGrimsby, Manager at The St. James Hotel Grimsby, responded to this review
Dear Guest, Thank you for your comments which I will pass on to the team. Positive comments are always good to hear and we look forward to welcoming you back. Regards Paul George Operations Manager

"Only the Service is Good"

JackTravelsFar, Lincoln, United Kingdom 29/12/2019

I'm not trying to be mean but we came to the hotel over Christmas too see family and my Fiancé is disabled. The only thing that the hotel could do was give us more quilts to lay on as the bed was too hard, the kettle didn't work properly, The lights occasionally flickered and the plug socket next to the kettle is impossible to take things in and out because of the position it is in. Other than that the service was spectacular and the staff were trying to be as helpful as possible and granting the requests I asked like extra milk and sugar for our tea or getting the quilts and extra pillows etc. Special thanks to Fallon and Jess for being such good receptionists and being as helpful as possible over the holidays.

StJamesGrimsby, Manager at The St. James Hotel Grimsby, responded to this review
Dear Guest, Sorry about the problems you found in your room during your recent stay, I will look into the issues you had with our housekeeping and maintenance teams and see if we can rectify them. Thank you for your positive comments towards the reception team which I will pass on to them. If you are ever in Grimsby in the future, please don't hesitate to contact me and I will endeavour to make your next stay a more positive one. Regards Paul George Operations Manager

"A little tired but that doesn't make it bad"

101pc, Frankfurt, Germany 25/11/2019

The staff were all friendly and helpful. Breakfast was very good. The buffet doesn't look immediately attractive, but my food was of good quality and very well prepared. The rooms are a little tired, but then, the prices reflected this.

StJamesGrimsby, Manager at The St. James Hotel Grimsby, responded to this review
Dear Guest, Glad you enjoyed your recent stay with us at the St James, I will pass on your comments to the team. So pleased you enjoyed your breakfast too. My team and I look forward to welcoming you back soon. Paul George Operations Manager

"Cheap and cheerful "

We often stay here it's a bit tired but clean and cosy although some of the rooms have been nicely refurbished the staff are friendly and the breakfast is very good value for money too with buffet service including black pudding!! Well worth the low cost for room and breakfast

StJamesGrimsby, Manager at The St. James Hotel Grimsby, responded to this review
Dear Guest, Thank you for your comments. So happy you enjoyed your black pudding too. Hope to see you again soon. Kind Regards Paul George
