« Fantastic venue for our Wedding Party »

We really cannot fault the Cedars and the staff for the way they looked after our guests and us for our wedding party. Matt and the team instantly made us feel in safe hands the moment we arrived at the venue and they were attentive and professional throughout. We, and many of our guests also stayed overnight. Thank you. You contributed hugely to an amazing day.

    « Very average »

I must have stayed in this hotel more than any other in my life. I have loved it's quaintness and idiosyncrasies and the staff have always made it personable and friendly. However, it recently was bought by a larger chain and it is in danger of losing its USP's. I was told the bar would close at 11pm so I popped in for a nightcap at 10.30. If I'd left it a moment later they would have been closed. My shower doors were broken, there was no soap in the shower soap dispenser and the bed wasn't very comfortable. I really hope they improve as I want to stay here in the future but it will need to get better.

    « Good staff »

Nice staff made me and my wife feel at home, food was lovely, room service was ok although it took its time! Lovely place to stay, will be returning soon! Nice atmosphere also reminds me of the Hilton Hotel.

    « Amazing service »

Hands down the best service I have ever received at any hotel. We had a great stay with several meals that were all delicious, second only to their amazing and helpful staff. We left feeling cared for and we haven't stopped talking about them since (and also wishing our current hotel had their staff!) Should we ever come to Suffolk again, we will absolutely stay at the Cedars. Big huge thank you to Matt, George and Cameron as well as the rest of the staff.

    « Very disappointed »

My husband uses a lot of these hotels for business that's why we decided to stay in this one. Best Western apparently have just taken this one over. We only had a weekend away but was extremely disappointed. The room was very dirty and old-fashioned like most of the hotel. The bathroom was dirty and old-fashioned and the shower was permanently going hot and cold. There was mould on the wall food stuck on the radiator and under. Bedside unit there was bits of paper and hadn't been hoovered for months. There was blood on the balance sheet and the mattress was so old it tilted to one side so obviously we didn't have any sleep. They need to got the hotel. The Staff are friendly and breakfast was lovely on the first day. Second day was served by two girls who was not even interested in serving. We were there for 10 minutes before I we wax even greeted and had to ask twice for my toast and twice for an extra coffee. Certainly not very good at all. I would recommend anyone to stay there until it has a complete re-Ferb

« A friendly hotel in super location »

The staff & Team could not have been anymore helpful. It seems this hotel has had a tough few months with negative reviews and that's always so hard to come back from, we know people are quick enough to leave a bad review but rarely mention the good ones. All in all this hotel was friendly and although soon to be going under a large refurbishment they still had been painting & cleaning rooms to a good standard.' Good luck with the refurb guys, you have a super set of staff and once this is complete you'll be full steam ahead

« Lovely place a little tatty here and there but nothing major full restoration is on the cards to start soon. »

Great location for us, Birthday long weekend, took the dog that got treated better than us. Staff were brilliant, every member of staff was nice with great people skills. Nothing was too much trouble, there was a wedding reception on the Saturday, no disruption to us we never heard anything from our room. A lovely weekend.

    « pleasant stay »

Clean hotel, friendly and helpful staff. There was a problem with heating and hot water but this was sorted as soon as reported. Good location for exploring Suffolk. Bar meals were good value and of good quality.

Where to start? I think I will start with the infamous Room 11!!! Arrived at the hotel after a five hour car journey and, together with our friends, checked in. Bearing in mind that when I booked I was asked if we would like rooms next to each other, we were given keys to rooms in different parts of the hotel. We were escorted to the foot of the main staircase and then abandoned to our own devices! The hotel is old and has a rabbit warren of narrow corridors, stairs and steps and so many doors and rooms in nooks and crannies. We found our friends room first and struggled on with our bags and baggage to find ours - Yes, you guessed it. Room 11. My husband and I are senior citizens, albeit able bodied. However, Room 11 is situated at the top of the narrowest, steepest, spiral staircase normally found in medieval castles! Someone was having a laugh. We huffed and puffed and struggled to the top of the stairs only to be confronted with the tiniest of landings and a door with a sign sellotaped to the door which said 'Please mind your head'. Very thoughtful! The room was a revelation. As requested, twin beds, one on the right-hand side of the room, tucked under the eaves, the second on the left-hand side of the room, again tucked under the eaves. We were in the attic with no escape route in the event of a fire. Glaringly obvious was the massive wooden beam which ran the full length of the floor. Wooden beams in old houses usually run across the ceiling. Not in Room 11. The beam split the floor space in two. A massive trip hazard. The second thing I noticed were the cigarette burn marks in the carpet. The only electric light was sunk into the ceiling, close to the door. Anyone having to get up in the night to use the bathroom ran the risk of either falling over the beam in the floor or knocking themselves out on the low beam across the doorway, hence the sign 'Please Mind Your Head'! The bathroom was tiny with a shower over the coloured bath. Coloured bathroom suites went out of fashion years ago which proved that the room had not seen an upgrade since Adam was a lad. Now about that low beam. Not a problem for the small in stature but my husband is 6'2" and we heard later, (rightly or wrongly) that the previous week a workman had knocked himself out on that low beam! An accident, if not a disaster, waiting to happen. Only one course of action. I beat a hasty retreat to reception and asked for a move, explaining to the Receptionist why we couldn't stay in that room. Thinking about it, she didn't seem surprised. I wonder why? Fortunately, we were offered another room on a much lower floor which, of course, we accepted with alacrity. We could live with the bleach marks in the carpet and the cobwebs and the dirty windows in our new room. Can I suggest to management that the bedding needs replacing as the duvet and the pillows are well past their sell-buy date. Please heed this warning! If, upon arrival at The Cedars, you are given the key to Room 11, run! The only redeeming feature of this hotel was the good breakfast which was included in the price. The lady in the dining-room who served us our breakfast was most attentive to our needs and nothing was too much trouble. The dining tables themselves were ridiculously small for four people with little or no room to put everything. Management, take note! My husband and I have stayed at several Best Western Hotels and as far as the bedrooms are concerned, The Cedars is definitely the worst. I can't speak for the other attic rooms, but Room 11 is only fit to be used as a storeroom.

    « Give it a miss »

Travelled all the way from Australia to stay in this Hotel for the weekend. So disappointed. We were given the twin room (room 11)which appeared to be the attic. Small one bedside table . No bedside lamp.A big timber beam ran through the entire length of the floor which was easy to trip over. If there was a fire we would have been trapped. This room is only suitable for storage. A complaint was left at reception but we were still charged the full price which was excessive for accommodation of this type.If your offered this room don't even consider it!

    « Health Hazard »

Visited for a family party and shared room 11 with my cousin. This room should never be let. It has a 4inch beam running across the floor which could have caused a nasty accident in the night. The room has no home comforts, no bedside lamp, a leather/)plastic chair that was peeling and shedding over anyone sitting in it. The bathroom had a shower so small it was Impossible to turn round all in a nice shade of pale avocado. The towels were small and scruffy. The worst thing was the scary very steep and very narrow staircase to get to it. Maybe fun for children but not for these sprightly 70 year olds. Windows were filthy and should there have been a fire we would have had no hope of getting out as it did not open and was anyway too small. We mentioned all these things on checkout but all we got was'oh dear I am sorry but nothing I can do'. The hotel is in great need of refurbishment but my main concern is for room 11 and the legality of letting this room. I should add that I am an ex hotelier and know what I am talking about. Have never, ever given a bad review before but feel I have to in this case.

    « A pleasant surprise. »

We stayed with our dog for 4 nights. It was our first time at a Best Western hotel and we got a really good price so we're not expecting much. How wrong we were. First impressions were not great, the location leaves a lot to be desired. Situated between a dual carriageway and an industrial estate we were ready to leave but we needn't have worried. We were not disturbed by either. The welcome was very warm, even for our dog. The room was fine, bedding was clean and fresh and towels were good. Tea coffee and biscuits. We had breakfast included. All the usual cereals, fruit and pastries and a cooked option too. Restaurant was good, food very good and staff lovely.

« Ideal mid-week accommodation. Conveniently located and quiet. »

We wanted a place to stay mid-week whilst touring and bird watching in East Anglia. The room was clean, the bed comfortable and the room was satisfactorily facilitated with toiletries and drinks, kettle and hair drier etc. Breakfast was outstanding with a wide variety of choice and an excellent "full english". The staff were friendly, relaxed and helpful, without being fussy. Evening meals - served in the bar - were of good quality, generous proportions and politely served at a reasonable price - approx £12.00 for mains and £6 for starters and desserts. At £75 per night (including breakfast) we thought this was very acceptable, comfortable, conveniently located, not intimidating and good value. Very likely to return if visiting this area again.

« Adequate Stay at The Cedars »

We booked in at the Cedars for one night on 10 March because we were having a meal at a local pub to celebrate a friend's birthday. Unfortunately the check-in wasn't the most quick or efficient - we rang the bell several times but no-one came. In the end, we had to find someone ourselves to check us in as we only had a short time to get ready before being picked up by our friends. We were told the hotel was busy because there was a function going on which is why the service was slow. The room was adequate and clean and good value for what we paid. However, we didn't have breakfast so can't comment on that aspect. Overall, it wasn't the best stay we have experienced.

« Sunday Lunch at the Cedars. »

We had a delicious Sunday lunch today. The food and the service were excellent! The staff were fab, they couldn't have done more for us. A great start being offered a complimentary glass of Buck's Fizz. Most of us had roast beef and it melted in the mouth! Would definitely return. Thanks. The Seeley family.

    « Meringue Man »

Had a wonderful meal with the family today and as per normal George took the stick we gave him very well And thanks to Rhys Ifan look a like who lent us his phone and speaker Standard was very good as always as we regularly have family meals here The Meringue man

    « Appalling »

Rooms in need of updating. Cobwebs in the bathroom and on patio doors. Lights not working and heating noisy. No hot water in the morning or staff available to speak to. Restaurant was supposed to be open for breakfast at 6.30am but at 7am everything was still in darkness so left without it. Evening meal was dreadful the cutlery was stuck to the table. Won't be going back again.

    « Dreadful Place »

Very disappointing stay at The Cedars , only there one night which was quite long enough !! Water in the double bedroom we stayed was impossible to regulate , couldn't shower in it , either scolding hot or freezing cold !!!! But what was more disappointing was the lack of staff , breakfast in the morning was a total shambles , no cereal bowls , no milk in the milk jugs , no juice in the juice machines , no staff to do filing up !!! One girl in a busy breakfast room , she was rushed off her feet !!!!! After having to wait 25 minutes to be served , breakfast came luke warm !!! Very poor show !!! All in all by far a very unsatisfactory stay at The Cedars !! Won't be staying again !!!!!! Dissatisfied customer from Norwich , Norfolk !!!!!!!

    « Family meal »

6 of us had Sunday lunch..oh dear no Guinness no cabernet sauvignon. .I'm gutted for a start .but then we all had a long wait to be asked for our meals. .the service was appalling and the food was totally unacceptable. I will be avoiding this establishment in future. .what was once a descent place to eat but new management has messed up big time. Best Western sorry to say is not...

    « Short break »

We enjoyed our stay in Suffolk. Food, room, service all good. Problem with radiator not working was sorted out promptly. Price for stay was competitive. Staff were pleasant and helpful. We would have no hesitation in staying there again if we are in the area. It was our first visit to a Best Western Hotel and we will certainly consider using them again in the future.

« Diamond wedding anniversary party! »

Celebrated my parents-in-laws diamond wedding anniversary here last night with 32 other family members and friends and it was just absolutely perfect! we hired the whole restaurant and were given a free reign to decorate it how we wanted, we had the carvery buffet which was lovely - there was plenty of food, the staff were well organised and attentive - nothing was too much trouble for them! My parents-in-law along with another couple also stayed the night and said the rooms were really nice too! An overall lovely evening and my parents-in-law had a wonderful time - thank you everybody!

    « Yes and no »

I think the outside of the hotel could do with a make over. The staff could not have been more helpful and very knowledgeable of the area. We moved rooms during our stay purely because the television did not work. Both rooms were clean, comfortable beds and tea making equipment. The toiletries were basic and renewed daily Breakfast was cooked when ordered so was not laying around getting cold The hotel is slightly out of Stowmarket with a 20 min walk in.

    « A great nights stay! »

We stayed at the Cedars hotel in a family room on 3rd Feb and we enjoyed our stay. The manager informed us at check in that there was a 21st birthday party going on that evening so we were aware that there would be a disco up to midnight. There were no worries of the sound spoiling our sleep as our room was far enough away not to be disturbed by it. Although the decor in the Hotel looks a little dated, the character of the hotel (a 16th Century farm house) is so quirky and quaint; it's historic charm can be seen. Our 8 year old loved walking through the corridors and stairs to our tucked away room. The family room was clean, warm, comfortable and very well equipped, it met the needs of our overnight stay perfectly. We hadn't booked a table for an evening meal as we weren't sure of our arrival time but the staff fitted us in even though they were fully booked. The meal portions were huge and the quality of the food was superb. Breakfast was a relaxed affair with a typical layout of Continental and cooked breakfast on offer. The cooked breakfast was delicious, a great start to the day! All the staff in this hotel did their best to make us feel welcome and gave great service even though the evening was very busy.

    « 18th Birthday Party 3/2/18 »

Had a great 18th Birthday party for our daughter in the restaurant of the Cedars Hotel last night. Family and friends really enjoyed the evening. Couldn't fault the service, buffet or the organisation. Many thanks to the staff who were so helpful and friendly. We'll be back!

« Under new management but still excellent »

I must have stayed here a hundred or more times in the last 20 years as my company's headquarters are next door. However, I hadn't been for over a year until last week. Many of my colleagues have turned their nose up at such a modest and homely establishment preferring the bright lights of Ipswich! The lovely people who previously owned it have sold it to Best Western. The people I met on this visit were delightful too and I just hope Best Western will keep as much of the charm of this establishment as they can. It's a great favourite of mine.

    « Business Trip »

Stayed for 4 weeks, The room was big with good facilities. The en-suite was spotlessly clean and well appointed with good quality toiletries. The usual tea and coffee facilities were provided and the Bar/Restaurant had a good and reasonably priced menu with daily specials. The water pressure was good in the shower. I had a ground floor room which would have been suitable for people requiring stepless access however access to the bar etc would have required going outside and entering by another door to avoid the 4 or so steps. Towards the end of my stay I had to change rooms and was on the first floor. This room was not quite as big but still just as good.

« One staff member awful!! »

I visited the restaurant, it seemed great until I got the food, which was tasty but after using my knife to cut my sons food ( which I have a severe allergy to ) I asked one young girl who worked there if she would mind bringing a fresh one out, as she didn't seem to be busy, she said ?you already have a set? this girl was rude and never got me my new cutlery, I will not be returning as long as that young girl (long, blonde) works there.

    « Christmas Party Night »

We run a local business so booked a Christmas party night on 23rd December for staff and their partners and also invited our family and friends - there was 42 of us in total. The tables were set out as we had requested and were nicely done. The function room was decorated and looked really nice. The service we received from Sharon and Angela was exceptional and they kept checking we was happy with everything. The food was bought out piping hot and was absolutely gorgeous. Lots of people from our party commented on how nice the food was. The Chef, Pete done an amazing job. We never had to wait very long at the bar to be served a drink and the lad behind the bar George was extremely polite and helpful. The DJ played really good music and everyone was up dancing. He also played all of our requests. Overall it was a very enjoyable evening and everyone had a fantastic time. Special thanks to Sharon, Angela, Pete, George and the DJ for all their hard work!!

    « Fabulous Christmas Lunch 2017 »

This was my first time attending the Cedars for a Christmas Lunch and I was not disappointed, quite the opposite ! The food was delicious and while we were expecting a 3 course lunch we actually had extras : cheese and biscuits, chocolates (seemed handmade) and mince pies with coffee - the first ever time I have had mince pies at a function which were not out of a box ! The pastry was amazing ! Back to the main course - huge amounts of turkey and no dark meat to be seen ! Both of us cleared our plates on each course and didn't need to eat again for the rest of the day. Onto the service : excellent throughout. We had a song to start with (not cringy) which set the atmosphere. The food was served efficiently with no waiting around for plates to be cleared once a course had been finished. There was exactly the right time between courses. There was a senior member of staff who was constantly monitoring service and was available if needed - I even saw him ferrying drinks from the bar to a table for a person with poor mobility ... nice touch. The room was packed (over 80 customers?) and it seemed many were returning ones who knew the routine of the day. We will be amongst that number next year as I have already booked my place ! Well done to all staff concerned who truly offered service with a smile even thought they were having to work on Christmas Day.

    « Dinner/Dance »

I attended a Christmas Dinner/Dance function last night and after reading some bad reviews wasn't sure what to expect. But no need to worry. Our food was served on time well presented and pipping hot. Service was very good and nothing was too much bother.. Everybody worked hard and helped to make it all a great Christmas party.

    « Christmas works do »

Saw some bad reviews on trip advisor about The Cedars Stowmarket. Went there last night for a Christmas party. Had a really good time. Food decent. Disco excellent. It's what you make it. Stayed in the hotel for the night. Excellent breakfast. Friendly staff.

Very disappointed and cut stay short. Seemed to be short staffed because of Christmas functions. Room very dated and not clean to hotel standards. TV in room did not receive signal and was not fixed when we informed hotel. Did not eat there so cannot comment on catering. Very poor pint of bitter. Needs renovation and management overhaul in my opinion.

« Worst Christmas function I have ever been to die to poor effort by hotel and food quality »

We recently went to a Christmas party organised by a company at the Cedars Hotel and were expecting it to be of a good standard given that the hotel has recently been bought out and is going through a transition. Our thought process being that this would mean the new owners would be trying very hard to make a good impression - Oh boy how wring we were! The venue was poorly decorated (given it was a Christmas function) so poor that it was non existent. There was absolutely no effort made to impress and the tables and layout were what I would equate to a school dining hall. Luckily (I guess) the disco that dominated the room was OK. We will start with the drinks on the table (pre bought by the company). The table water was in plastic bottles straight from the garage it was probably bought from...the white wine was warm and had to be sent back (not isolated). Food - The food was awful with the melon started tasteless and the soup so thick it could have been used as mortar. The mains were disappointing - Cod (small quantity) and extremely oily and pretty tasteless. The main Christmas choice (Turkey) two small slices, pigs in blankets were off putting as they where almost white in colour and the stuffing mass produced sliced and baseless. The pudding was perhaps the best dish although again fairly poor and the dishes it came in where all different. Service - Again very school dinners with the staff (not all to be fair some where delightful and hard working) just dumping the food on the table with the comment 'heres your pudding..' All in all this was the worst Christmas function (bar the company) that I ever been too and we will not be going again unless there is a significant improvement. The whole night was like something from 1970!

« Very tired looking and dated Hotel »

The Hotel is an old building the staff were very polite and helpful, The food was good, I checked in at 3 pm and went to my room to find the room feeling damp and cold. The heating was off so went to the reception to enquire about the heating and was told by the receptionist that the heating is turned on at 5 pm (it was minus 1 outside) The receptionist wasn't very comfortable with his answer and I suppose my face said it all. The receptionist did offer to boost the heating up straight away and that he did. The old sash widows looks like are only cleaned from the inside and distinctly grubby on the outside
