    « Great find! »

Stayed here for 2 nights on business. Staff are very friendly & welcoming. Room was of a good size, bathroom small but you don't need a huge one if you are on your own. Shower did take ages for the hot water to come through so let it run for a bit before getting in! Food was lovely in the restaurant both for breakfast and dinner. Will definitely stay here again if in the area.

    « Exceeded expectations »

Attended a formal dinner dance on Saturday. Having driving past many times I wasn't expecting much bit just goes to show how appearances can be deceptive. Lacks the wow factor of some places but was great. A really nice venue with friendly and efficient staff. Food was plentiful and excellent. Wonderful roast potatoes. Would recommend for an event.

    « A five-star stay in a 3-star hotel »

Stayed for a few days in this hotel and it was a very pleasant surprise. The whole personnel was kind and helpful, showing a politeness and friendliness that I rarely encountered in my trips. The garden landscape was exquisite, highlighted even more by the sunny weather. The bar offered plenty of choices and some of the dishes served in the restaurant were incredible. There is a shopping center nearby (about 15 minute by foot), offering pretty much everything that you might need in a trip (Sainsbury's, Sports Direct, Boots, Next). On the downside, the hotel is placed pretty far from the city of Reading (about 4 miles), but there are bus lines easily accessible. All in all, a very good experience, especially if you want to disconnect a bit from the rush of a life in a big city. I will return with pleasure anytime that my business brings me in the area again.

    « No more honey :( »

A frequent address I come to, always a pleasant stay and always look to the favorite part of my stay..the breakfast, but today to my surprise I could not find any honey! hope the honeycomb will be back soon :)

    « Disappointing »

Stayed overnight for work. Evening meal was awful , starters had brown salad , the tart was runny, rolls rock hard. Many people didn't eat their meal. My bedroom was very old fashioned , old bathroom some people had a newer room with a nice shower however mine was very old. Breakfast was better than the evening meal. The staff were very friendly however . I personally would never want to stay here again

    « Sunday Carvery. »

Enjoyed an excellent meal with my wife at their Sunday Carvery yesterday. A 'proper' restaurant with table cloths. A few well-behaved children were there - but a relaxing environment with little noise. A place where obviously middle-aged children take their elderly parents for a Sunday Meal. Food was of a high standard, as were the Toilets. Be careful as you draw into their large Car Park. It is off a very busy A4 and I recommend you always turn left into the Car Park and not try to cut across the traffic as I did. (Go slightly further on to a roundabout and then approach the turning on the correct side.)

    « Adequate »

Stayed on Sunday night after a great day with family. Decided to eat in the hotel - checked out the room service menu, which was adequate but basic, so went down to the restaurant to see what was on the menu and was very surprised to see the same limited offering. It may be that it was because it was Sunday but a very poor choice. Ate in the room, was okay but nothing to write home about. Similarly, the room was okay but nothing special. In all, adequate.

    « Disappointing »

Visited for Sunday lunch yesterday. My disappointing verdict was in relation to the starters and desserts, particularly the desserts. I expected better from a hotel. My crumble and custard resembled (and tasted) like a school dinner pudding. No presentation and in fact I could hardly see the crumble for the custard it was drowning in. Other members of my party had lemon meringue pie. Again, dumped on a plate with no real presentation. No offer of cream to accompany? Starters were very basic and not exciting at all. The carvery was good though! Could people not opt for just the carvery perhaps rather than school dinner/meals on wheels type of starters and desserts? That would be better. Service was slow. The young staff on duty didn't really seem to know what they were doing! Then the manager had a bit of an argument with the chef which livened it up a bit!

    « Overnight stay »

4 Star treatment, with only a 3 star rating. Reception staff were extremely, friendly, the bed was extremely comfortable, facilities excellent, breakfast was totally more than adequate, and all served piping hot, and the breakfast staff were very cheery and on the ball. Definitely a place to stop, and enjoy the area. Especially with it been do central to lots of attractions.

« Good for organised party lunch »

A birthday in the family, relations all over southern England so geographically this is an a ideal venue. Sunday lunch, standard fare (beef or turkey) 40 of us, only criticism is that nobody from the hotel stayed with us to ensure nobody ran out of anything during the meal.

    « Carvery »

Sunday lunch at the carvery. Good room. Took time to be seated. Seating comfortable. Offered drinks but staff forgot what we wanted. They turned up in the end. Only two young people serving they did their best but it took so long to get the servings. Food tasted good. Good selection on the carvery. Freshly cooked. Coffee arrived at the end of the meal but we had to wait to pay the bill. Overall food good but service very poor due to lack of staff. Would I go again, yes if I was not in a rush.

    « Home from home. »

We stayed 3 nights and did not want to leave. Lovely modern clean hotel with great staff. The grounds are very well kept and there is plenty of free parking. Our room and bathroom were a good size and you could turn the heating on or off so it was not overpowering. The breakfast was adequate but I have had better. It is a very busy hotel with a lot of business people coming and going. Breakfast gets picked over early and the staff are always busy replenishing everything. We ate in the Olive Tree restaurant for the 3 nights we were there. Emese and Szabolcs were amazing. They never stopped. They always had a smile and were very polite. Of course, the hotel has WIFI. Thank you for a great stay.

« George Michael Tribute Dinner Dance »

On a cold Windy, Friday a wonderful night was had. Disco and tribute nights at the Calcot are legendary. My wife celebrated her 50th birthday, cake, announced, happy birthday, sing along. Amazing Robert Taylor, George Michael Tribute got everyone dancing, which continued with the 80-90s disco until 12. Everyone was dancing having fun. Great atmosphere. Big thank you to the staff for making it work! Whitney night, in April, Disco Boogie night in May and ABBA tribute in June, brilliant!

    « Our Wedding 24/3/18 »

We held our wedding at The Best Western Calcot Hotel. Nothing was too much trouble. Christine and her team went well above and beyond our expectations. The food served to our 70+ day guest was plentiful and very hot. Food was delicious. Our evening food was for 100+ and again was plentiful and delicious. A small party stayed from Friday to Sunday. Rooms were very clean, cleaners were really accommodating. They are a 5* wedding venue without the huge price tags ??????????

    « A very good stay. »

Only stayed for one night but found the room very clean as expected. The only thing I could really fault was a loose tap on the bathroom sink causing the plug to not operate. Had to wait a little for bar staff to appear but the drinks were affordable unlike some hotels we have stayed out. Breakfast was excellent as was the service. Overall a very good experience and would recommend. We'll be staying here again.

    « Great prize »

I won a 2 night stay with dinner, bed and breakfast in a charity auction- and what a great prize it was! Although some areas of the hotel were a bit dated, it was spotlessly clean. Staff without exception were friendly, approachable and very professional. The food was delicious and well cooked (and fresh honey in the comb at breakfast to die for!). Thank you Best Western for donating such a great prize- and I don't doubt we'll be back when the weather gets better!

    « Love this hotel »

This hotel will always be special to me as I got married there. The staff are just as friendly when you are an overnight guest though. Clean, friendly and comfortable what more can you ask for in a hotel? ??

    « Very good »

I arrived here very late at night, after a long delayed return flight from Munich. I had no booking, but was too tired to drive further in the challenging snowy, icy conditions. They looked after me very well, I got a great room ( at good rate) The breakfast room & staff were also very welcoming . I was almost sad to be traveling home straight after. All in all great service & great hotel.

    3
    « Expensive and Average »

It's a Best Western.... like most they're not great. So I stayed 4 nights (Sun-Thur) and was put into a Twin Room as the Hotel didn't have anything consecutive at £90 a night I felt this was expensive, and it didn't help to travel 4 miles into Reading it would take circa 40+ minutes each time. The room had a tiny TV and the only thing modern looked like the Bathroom. The Hotel had no fitness facilities. The Food in the restaurant was nice for both dinner and breakfast.

    3
    « Average at Best »

Perception on arrival (on a Sunday) looked good - plenty of car parking space; warm welcome from Receptionist; Room was OK but for an Executive Room I'd expect a King sized bed these days and more modern heating system than an old radiator. Sunday bar opening times were inconvenient even though as residents we could get a drink but had to walk to Reception to ask them to get someone to come and serve you; Sunday dinner menu was very strange - no roast dinners anywhere in sight - does one really want a burger for Sunday dinner??!! Even more a so-called barman who doesn't know what a Calypso Coffee is!!!!!! On Monday morning things obviously were more what one would expect - a good breakfast spread - but a weird contraption for dispensing marmalade or jam into little dishes; also a much better weekday dinner menu - and food was of pretty good quality - just a pity really that Sunday service/menu offering let them down when we arrived, along with rooms which need refurbishing/upgrading.

    « Good Carve up »

Sunday carvery in the restaurant was very good with comfortable seating and nicely laid tables, with table cloths. The service on arrival was very warm and friendly and we were taken to our seats. Nice menu for starters and desert and the main course was very generous and varied with a choice of three meats and some of each if required. All courses very good.

    « Restaurant: Great service »

This review is about the hotel's restaurant. I visited here for a family birthday meal. My mum has mobility problems and I was very impressed with the excellent customer-service that I experienced, particularly by the Restaurant Manager. She treated my mum respectfully, factoring in the limitations that my mum had. She was friendly and helpful, even offering to escort my mum to the loo. The other staff were also very friendly, with one guy offering to carry my mum's plate from the carvery back to the table. The food was very nice, with generous helpings from the carvery, and was great value too (£17 for 3 courses, plus coffee).

« Best Western Hotel, Calcot, Reading »

My wife & I had an overnight stay here whilst attending a wedding reception. There was an early check in, available from 14:00 hrs & a good check out time of 11:00 hrs. This suited us perfectly, enabling an early lunch in the nearby village of Theale & plenty of time for my wife to get ready for the reception at 19:00!! On arrival the hotel staff were very good, with an efficient check in. The hotel was welcoming & clean. The room itself was also clean, the bed was extremely comfy, the bathroom also was clean & everything worked correctly. The main hotel bar was good & reasonably priced, there were comfy leather chairs to sit in. Our stay also included a buffet style breakfast with hot & cold options, again this was very nice with good service. I would say if you ever need to stay in or near Reading stay here.

« Business stay - met all requirements - thank you »

Welcoming reception staff, clean and warm room - walls are a little thin. Restaurant was ok, food was not bad - starter was better than main and desert was decent. The staff were a little slow but nothing terrible. Breakfast was a buffet which was good in terms of selection e.g. poached, scrambled or fired eggs and quality. Overall a decent stay - thank you

    « Party Nights »

This was our 5th New Years party as always we had a great time the staff are so helpful and friendly, the food was outstanding, we are looking forward to this years events. We stayed over even though we live near, bedrooms are nice and comfortable. The breakfast is awesome, we would highly recommend the party nights, always a great evening.

    « excited Christmas Party »

Was here Sunday eve for my works Christmas do ! very friendly and helpful staff - nothing was too much trouble. It was in the main dance hall. we weren't the on9y group there but it was very well organised. Drinks at the bar very reasonable/cheep (£1.70 half a coke & £3.80 for Jack Daniels & coke) very clean and tidy area. we were sat in 2 groups of around 15. The menu was very good, simple but beautiful food. After dinner we all had a great dance on the big dance floor was so much fun and plenty of roomful everyone, I would highly recommend having an event here !

    « Great night. »

We booked one of the Calcot Hotel parties for a group of our neighbours. This included an overnight stay, 3 course meal, a live band and disco until 12:30am and breakfast the next day. The hotel do these quite often and I'm sure you wouldn't be disappointed. The hotel is nice, rooms are clean, warm and comfortable. The staff were excellent and catered for our every need. We'll definitely be back.

    3
    « Sunday lunch »

Sunday (roast) lunch is not my favourite food but as such meals go this was ok. The buffet arrangement will suit many, especially those who insist on piling their plates high, but for me it allowed me to pick the vegetables I prefer (of which there was a good choice). The rest of my group, who all seemed to be Sunday roast experts, enjoyed their choices. Pleasant dining but nothing special.

    3
« The bar with no beer »

Whilst the hotel is conveniently located and all the staff are friendly, welcoming and professional, it is somewhat dated. Having eaten en route, I wanted a couple of beers before retiring. Sadly the bar had run out of draught beer.

« Queen Tribute Dinner Dance »

A rare opportunity to see a concert quality Tribute to Queen with full silver service dinner served by courteous and friendly staff. The Management welcomed guests at their tables making guests feel ?at home'. Following coffee and mints, the dj Jason, ?warmed' up the guests of varying ages with some good old sing-a-longs before the band hour long show performing with hit after hit with outstanding accuracy. We'll be back to see the shows detailed in the brochures on the tables. Well recommended for true value for money shows and dinner.

    « Poor food »

After reading the menu in the lobby I thought roast rib of beef sounded lovely. How wrong I was, this has got to be the worst roast I have ever had. £10.50 for what was a microwave box roast with a rubbery Yorkshire pudding. Staff very uninterested even when the restaurant was almost empty. The room was clean and tidy but cold. I had to turn all the radiators on and wait for the air to bleed through. Breakfast was better but fried eggs burnt. Clearly no proper chef here!!! Book a room but eat dinner elsewhere??

« Gave it a 1 as they were so rude »

Firstly we had trouble locating this hotel. Phoned for help and the lady at reception was so impatient and arrogant we had regretted paying on booking. On arrival we waited for almost half an hour as she was busy, others were also waiting. No aircon, stifling night, if you opened the window the traffic was so noisy you could not sleep. Rooms need a revamp, all very tired.

    5
    « Overnight stay »

We picked this hotel as all the others near here were fully booked. And our luck was in! The hotel approach is very clean and the gardens are well kept. The reception was clean and tidy, and welcoming. The reception staf were very pleasant and helpful. Our room, 50, was very comfortable, clean and the bathroom was spotless. The bed was firm but not hard and we had a very good nights sleep. This depsite the fact that there was a road outside we heard no noise. The restaurant food was excellent. Service from the waitress was very good and helpful. My wife had the steak, and I had the steak and guiness pie. Both were as good as you can get. To my shame I could not finish the pie as there was so much steak! Breakfast was very good, both the cold selection of cereals and fruit, and the hot food was very tasty. Our eggs were cooked to order. If you stayed in one of the other local hotels, well you missed out on a very good pleasant hotel

« Avoid like the plague »

If you want a spacious, well appointed room, comfortable bed, great night's sleep, clean, tidy, practical bathroom and pleasant surroundings, DON'T BOOK INTO THE CALCOT HOTEL, READING. This was one of the most appalling beds we've ever had the misfortune to sleep in; hard as concrete, on a 30 degree slope and the smallest double you could possibly get. I even tried to top and tail at one point during the night, in order to avoid the 30 degree slope, but this too proved fruitless. The bathroom was so small, you have to wend your way round the door in order to be able to get to the toilet. The tile grout is covered in mould, as are the corners of the tiny window recess (in order to open this you have to stand in the bath), and the floor around the toilet is dirty and suspiciously sticky. There is absolutely no air flow through the bathroom, despite an extremely noisy extractor fan, and the whole of the bathroom is consequently soaking wet after a shower, with a permanently misted up mirror. The food in the restaurant is average at best, but with well above average prices, and the bar area is cold, with a large TV blaring in a corner. Suffice it to say, we won't be returning and it was a toss up to decide which I would do first.....leave a review or visit the chiropractor.

    « Cosy and practical »

Spent two nights here during the week. Superior double was comfortable and had all I needed including a spacious desk. On arrival, staff were friendly and polite as were all staff I came across and the food was good. Would stay here again.

    3
    « Ok, nothing special »

Everything here is, well, OK. other than the staff who are fantastically polite. The rooms are clean and have everything you need. Unfortunately the bed linen was was a bit scratch. The restaurant; although it was 80% empty, you'll have to chose a table based on the number of people in your party. There was no drinks menu so no way to know what wines they offer. Menu is limited but reasonable, and has all your standard items (steaks, burgers, fish and chips plus some veggie options). I wouldn't return in a hurray, but it does certainly tick most of the boxes if you need a quick stay.

« Best Best Western Hotl in the UK »

A quaint, modernized hotel with a dedicated staff and damned great food and wonderful rooms. Close to the major highways and shopping, and for me, exactly where I wanted and needed to go. The best of the Best Western chain by far.

    « Golden wedding »

Enjoyable time at our friends Golden Wedding party. The staff were so very helpful and friendly. The food was well prepared and presented. We stayed overnight in a very nice room which was clean and tastefully decorated but the bathroom was a letdown. So tiny and the bath was deep and narrow with a shower over the bath which we could not use. There is ample parking space which is useful.

We were married at the calcot hotel Saturday and it was amazing. The ceremony and wedding breakfast was all under one roof and the staff were very professional, friendly and helpful from beginning to end. Very good value, the room looked magical.. food excellent and disco in the evening got everyone up. Would recommend this venue to everyone. I haven't had one negative comment from my guests.

« Really friendly staff and very pleasant stay »

Really enjoyable stay with very pleasant staff in all areas of the hotel. Comfy, if fairly basic rooms, but a good restaurant with a wide choice and excellent breakfast. It was the staff who made this a memorable and enjoyable stay. Thank you

    « Two night stay »

Now This is the standard expected when you stay at a best western. Our sat nav did take us to a cul de sac a Mile away. So keep your eyes open on main road for the sign, that we did not see. But what a Lovely hotel and exceptionally friendly staff. Room was good. And comfortable with usual complimentary products. Even though on A main road. Traffic did not bother us & we slept well. We had a small problem in the room and maintenance sorted it straight away. Lovely out side area to have a drink. Food was perfect. Good selection of food & drinks. Breakfast was buffet style with all the trimmings. And Gary makes a mean fried egg. Reception ordered taxi, no problem. Always happy to help. Bar was opened for us any time we asked for a drink. Would absolutely Recommend this hotel and stay again.

« Nice and clean, good food, helpful and friendly staff. »

I had a two night stay for business. The decor is a little dated but in good condition and the overall hotel is neat and clean. Good restaurant turning out good tasty food served by very friendly and helpful staff. The rooms are clean and tidy although I found the bathroom a little cramped. Overall a pleasant stay.

    « Weekend stay »

My wife and I stayed for a weekend when we attended a wedding in the area we both felt that the staff were all most welcoming. the room had we guess had been recently been refurbished, and had a nice sized bathroom. the breakfast was self service which we like there was an excellent selection and well presented, the waiting staff could not do enough for you. Well done all the staff.

    « Very nice »

Nice friendly staff in the hotel and the bar. The food is lovely and the breakfast is good to start the day before work. Rooms are spacious and the beds are very comfortable! Good sized seating area out side and some cover to offer protection from the elements.

« The Overlook Hotel more like.... »

This place was like walking into a time warp. The room was like an old peoples home with a damp smell that I couldn't place and a very dated interior. I moved the bed slightly to get access to a plug and thought i had found a new life form, only for this to actually be a full on lock of someone's hair! I decided to push the bed back and ignore it. When i ventured to the bathroom i found it to be covered in a blue coloured genuine marble laminate - very 80s. The dining room was equally as interesting. Once being given the Sunday menu i decided to order the fish and chips - very quickly after ordering i was delivered the meal. Now i didnt know it was actually possible to make food this hot - let alone that quickly! Once i left it for some time to cool i eventually noticed that nothing really tasted of anything - i think this may have been the downside of cooking it in the blast furnace. When i returned to the room, i located the root cause of the smell - turns out it was the damp curtains! Once i used my antibacterial hand sanitiser all was well and i climbed into the bed, which was actually pretty comfy and to my liking. The room above me clearly wasn't going to bed and appeared to have the TV on all night whilst walking around, perhaps running some kind of on site hair dressers i was yet to find...

    « Take ear plugs. »

Never experienced anything like it in a hotel. There was a wedding reception which went on till midnight which was followed by at least half an hour of drunk people talking in the corridors. This was bearable. But then, for the rest of the night, we did not get any sleep. The walls/doors are in no way sound proofed enough and my whole night was spend listening to people opening/shutting their doors. This went on till about six in the morning. The friendly staff and nice decor are all irrelevant when you're in a hotel you can't actually sleep in!

    3
« Take your ear plugs for the best sleep »

Well it's a Best Western so don't expect a five star place. Having moved rooms as I was right over the disco and the walls were vibrating, I have to say I slept extremely well, not waking til 8.45, way past my normal getting up time. The room was clean, with kettle etc to make tea, coffee or chocolate, and lots of hot water in the shower. I would recommend that you take earplugs. Don't think I would have slept so well without them. And the breakfast was a very pleasant surprise with a good selection, bacon and freshly cooked eggs plus fresh fruit was my choice. The hotel staff were also very accommodating in moving me when they realised I was right over the disco. No ifs or buts.

    4
    « amazingly comfortable bed! »

in many respects this is a dated looking hotel, though the general rooms were having lots of work undertaken the bedrooms were furnished with old fashioned furniture and the sort furnishing and design was all a bit tired. The shower rooms had had recent updates though the extractor fan in our room was poor and didn't work well. There is no air conditioning in the rooms either so lucky we visited in July so it was raining. The thing that makes this hotel very good as apposed to average for the cost is the amazingly comfortable beds! we had 5 rooms between us and everyone commented on the beds. Better than Premier and that's the first time I've ever said that. We also had great service from all the staff and one of the best self service full English breakfasts the next morning.

    « A well managed hotel »

Thoroughly recommended as a convenient stop off just by junction 12 of the M4 motorway (and very close to the only IKEA store in the entire area!). Rooms are spacious, clean, well-maintained, with comfy beds and pillows. Breakfast is generous, with nice touches like honey from honeycombs and good croissants available. Every single member of staff proved to be pleasant, helpful and above all efficient - a sign of really good management. Prices are very reasonable indeed. We took two rooms for four of us plus a teething nine month old baby- dealing with in particular everybody went to enormous effort. Overall we all had an excellent experience with this hotel, perhaps somewhat to our surprise. I hope this acts as a counterbalance to some of the recent negative posts on this site.

« Disabled wheelchair users please check carefully »

Booked to stay 2 nights at this hotel as our youngest son was getting married at Uffton court. The hotel staff were very good but our eldest son is a wheelchair user and this was not really suitable for him. We booked the superior rooms but these were no different from other basic rooms at other hotels. The room which was called a disabled room had very little turning space for his wheelchair. We were told that we would have to use the fire escape entrance as hotel only had a very old fashioned Stena stairlift and this is not suitable for a full time wheelchair user We had no problem with using this when we originally booked but thought that it would be well maintained. We were very concerned about the ramp that was put up to allow my son to get in to the back of the hotel. It was just a piece of hardboard and by the next morning I guess a car must have driven over it and it was broken. The entrance we used was in a poor state of repair and not even cleaned down. Every time we went out we had to phone reception so they could reset the alarm. This could be very tiresome if a sole wheelchair user decided to visit the hotel. We mentioned this problem when we checked out so hopefully they have now installed a proper ramp .

+ve - Clean though dated and tired '80s style room. Decent desk for work and free wifi on day 1 (see -ve for day 2) Beds v soft - but comfortable. Good food. -ve - was given a room on the ground floor which is down some steps (no lift) at the end of a corridor with a window that opens onto the carpark which in turn is direct onto the dual carriange way. Reception not willing to change room and not prepared to help with luggage. I have a disability that means I can't lift easily. (apologies to anyone who heard luggage banging on steps). Very hot weather so needed to open window as no air con - no restriction on how far window will open.. Whilst slated blinds are in place these do not offer complete privacy and the only way to obtain it is to draw the heavy curtains. Does not make a single woman feel safe! Second night - Rang reception to ask for wifi code was told it was on the white check-in card I was given when I checked in and phone put down. Given I had lost the card I decided to use my mobile data! Didn't stay a third. So check you don't lose your white card and ensure you don't have a downstairs room.

Paid fir an executive room, which was no different from the standard apart from a few sweets in the room, certainly not woeth tbe extra cost..Bed was very uncomfortable and the feeling of falling off.. Loud music until Midnight on the friday and 2300 on Saturday, staff were pleasant but would have been nice to have been made aware of late night entertainment as we were backed onto the main reception hall.. Unfortunately I don't think I will be returning..

    « Comfy - good value - still modernising »

I have now stopped her 5 times as it is convenient for meetings in Reading, my wife came along this time and she though that the room was good but not exciting, this room still had the bath, which means a real squeeze to the loo. 12 of us had a meal & it was excellent. I was frustrated on arrival that half of the car park, including the disabled parking space was closed off to cater for a school prom later (obviously more important than guests) an the area directly in front of the hotel was also coned off. I did complain at the reception & had a call from the duty manager in my room offering to move the rope. I pointed out that I has already dragged the luggage in. Later I was disgusted when I asked the receptionist if I could be guaranteed a parking space after going out, only to be told there are plenty out back !!!!

From stepping through the door to leaving, we were greeted with very pleasant staff, nothing to much trouble. No air con in the rooms but as it was hot a fan had been supplied which was so much appreciated. lovely breakfast, buffet well worth the price, eat as much as you like, tea and toast served to you, but you can have as much as you require. Fruit, ham cheese yoghurts, jams cereals, and then eggs, scrambled, fried, bake beans, toms, bacon, sausages, help yourself, all hot and well cooked. Room was clean and fresh, only down side for me was the shower, the shower head was horrible, could not find a place to stand to get the water from the head to wash you with, think some new heads would be good. A very enjoyable stay for a fab wedding we attended.

Fantastic service from the team- Kym And Alice were exceptional with the planning of my very special birthday event. The service on the night, the DJ and the food were also great. Overall my friends and family had a fab time, and i would highly recommend the 'Party in a Box' offering that the Calcot Hotel provide, as they personalise it completely to your needs.

Great lil hotel, terrific restaurant staff. Very cute and good food overall. Breakfast includes full english 10pounds or continental 7pounds. If you book upon arrival it is 8pounds. Online for some reason it was 16. Dinner is nice, only complaint the break smelt of mould with my soup and was microwaved hot. It's not worth using stale bread to save a few pence and risk your reputation, is it? For the price paid cannot complain about the rooms. Hot water, comfy bed, small tv.

One night stay. Pleasant staff at check in and restaurant. Fairly basic evening dinner menu, burgers, steaks etc., not great quality. All the rooms on my corridor had a warning sign about the step just inside the door, but with the positioning of the suitcase stand and light switch, I was very quickly distracted and nearly fell twice.

We have been to many functions here since the 1960's and the standard they have maintained has been consistent. For this small function with Family & Friends we decided to hire the Loddon Suite which can hold 20 to 30 comfortably seated. The charge for this room is reasonable as it includes Waitress service, which means that the diners all get to eat at the same time rather a carvery, The food selection was excellent for starters, mains and desserts. The refreshments were plentiful and tea & coffee included in the deal. A cake table was provided too and the waitresses were brilliant at getting this cut and distributed. I recommend this venue for small or even bigger parties as they have several different size rooms to accommodate larger numbers.

    « What a shocker »

In the section of the hotel I was a given a room for 2 nights, I could hear everything from the room above, movement around the room, use of bathroom and on my second night snoring! I ate in the restaurant on the first night and though reasonably priced the food was bland. The staff in the restaurant were ok except for the miserable lady at breakfast, she did nothing to help my mood after my first sleepless night. What concerned me most was the total lack of empathy from reception when I mentioned the noise after my first night, there was no offer to move me and from the woman at the back of reception she just raised her eyebrows and threw comments in my direction that suggested an attitude of how dare I complain.

Stayed for three nights in a single room. I experienced slow WiFi, with my laptop struggling to connect whilst sat on the desk, having to sit on the bed in order to ensure it was connected well. The shower seemed have a very loud high pitch squeal when turned on, which made me shower as quickly as I could for the good of other guests - I also found it very peculiar that there was no extractor fan and the tiny bathroom window was locked meaning I couldn't air the bathroom without opening the main bedroom window. Finally the curtains wouldn't shut fully due to the rail clips being broken. Overall I was very disappointed in my stay, considering other stays I've had for the same or less money. The saving grace was the shortbread.

    « Sleep deprivation guaranteed »

Stayed at the hotel over a weekend as studying at a local college. The single room was small, but was clean and comfy. Plenty of parking as well and all staff seemed polite and friendly. Now for the down side, the noise, it is terrible. From the room I was in, you can actually hear the people talking in the bar below! The Hotel also books itself out for functions/parties etc so the music sounds like it is actually being played in your room. Having booked the room for a study weekend, where sleep was required, this wasn't ideal and I won't be staying here again. The final insult was my room was near to a fire exit where a loud alarm went off when anyone opened the door! Happened about 4/5 times each night in the early hours and woke me each time. I appreciate that the hotel can't legislate for its guests, but why the alarm?!?! It doesn't stop people using it, it just wakes everyone else up......

    « Customer service shines! »

The hotel itself is quite dated, my room on the ground floor was dark and had an odd smell. Also could hear every word spoken and every movement in the room above/next door and plumbing was very noisy. Thankfully almost everyone staying was a solo business traveller so still got a decent night sleep. The reception and restaurant service on the other hand were excellent. Lovely and efficient. And both dinner and breakfast were great.

« Overnight stay on business »

Very clean hotel with friendly staff. The hotel does lack atmosphere though. Food cannot be described as anything more than average the evening meal was bland and appeared to have been a warmed up meal rather than cooked fresh. In saying that if ever in the area would stay again.

Stayed a night as attending a wedding some 4 miles away. Very helpful staff who were very accommodating as we were travelling abroad next day. Breakfast was ok and plentiful. « cheery staff, rooms clean and basic comforts »

At the Hotel for a function. Food at the function was very good. Staying overnight the rooms were clean and comfortable, and in line with the reasonable prices. Didn't order breakfast when we made the booking and ended up paying £10 per head for Breakfast, which was a bit pricy for what it was. Overall hotel is clean , comfortable and the staff are all friendly ad helpful

« Terrible rooms but great staff »

Terribly small box room with no air and damp and mould problem. On complaint I was told there was no other room available. When I said I was happy to leave (10:30pm) they said there was a room but it needed cleaning which was going to take half an hour. I waited and the second room was actually a standard hotel room so I stayed. I don't think anybody should ever be allocated room 17 or 18 whichever it was as it is not fit for human use. On the other hand breakfast was good and staff were helpful.

« Great Value and service »

Stay here regularly with my partner on business. It is tremendous value compared to other hotel chains. Especially the one advertised by Lenny Henry. A great breakfast included and as an platinum member lots of freebies including complimentary alcoholic drink and biscuits, sweets, bottled water. The staff are all so friendly and welcoming. The restaurant appears somewhat dated. But actually for me that's part of the charm. Food is very good. Wholesome. In fact I can't find fault. If you pay a lot for something it can really disappoint. But this is value and charm.

Stayed here for a few days. Arrived on a saturday evening, car park was very busy as there was a wedding at the hotel. To get into the hotel we had to run the gauntlet of the smokers who had congregated right outside the front door, managed to get them to move and moved through the blue haze of smoke. Reception, welcome was one of the poorest we have received. Very little or no information about the hotel was forthcoming. The receptionist said to us "I notice you are a Platinum member, heres your upgrade" handing my wife a small bar of chocolate, not impressed. Room was a good size at the back of the hotel so no noise from traffic. Bed was comfortable . The bathroom was poor. Shower over a bath, get rid of it and install a proper shower cubicle, had issues with the shower curtain attaching itself to me and my head grazing the extractor fan. The position of the toilet was ridiculous , I had more space when I was sat on a portaloo in a toilet tent when I used to camp. The bed space is large enough to extend the bathroom 2 feet which would make it so much better. Breakfast was really good, loads of choice and the staff were friendly and helpful. Dinner was good too, good sized portions. Cleanliness of the room needs to improve , black mould on the tiles surrounding the bath. One day didn't have a bath mat, so used a hand towel , next day had a bathmat but no hand towel. They kept giving us new soap when we had barely used the previous bit. Needs work this place.

Stopped here three nights on business. It's OK. Staff are fine. Rooms are clean. Restaurant is dated and a bit shabby - décor circa 1980. I'd go again because it's reasonably priced for Reading. Breakfast is a bit below average. Other meals are fairly decent.

    « Good value »

We went for a function with about 60 other people. The bedroom was well laid out, clean and tidy. The function room was a good size. There were 3 choices each for starter, main and dessert. All the food that was provided was very well cooked, obviously freshly prepared and there was not a great wait between courses. The serving staff were very good, in fact all the staff in the hotel were very good. We ate breakfast the following morning, bacon, sausage, hash browns, beans tomato and options of fried egg, poached egg or scrambled eggs. It was presented buffet style and my one criticism was that the food was only warm as opposed to hot - they need to turn up the buffet warmers. Plenty of toast was provided, coffee tea, and the usual cold breakfast items, fruit etc. We had a good stay here and if we are in the area we would definitely use it again - just please turn up the buffet warmers at breakfast time.

    « Business overnighter »

I had an enjoyable stay and a good night's sleep. I was kindly upgraded to a room at the back of the hotel, very nicely furinished with a bath too. The TV was smaller than in many hotels these days but it did not worry me too much. The evening meal was nice...I had tuna steak although I requested it not too well done. They waitress admitted they only came one way as they were frozen portions! I assume this means they were pre-cooked also. I don't think fresh fish is too much to ask in a busy hotel personally. Still it was very tasty with a lovely piquant salsa on top. Lovely banana split to finish. The service was very good. One small gripe which I complained about. I ordered sandwiches for a colleague and myself at lunch time. My brown bread was a little stale and the turkey was plastic wrapped slice turkey roll which was wafer thin. For £4.75 I would expect the turkey to be fresh and carved from a breast or similar. Not very impressive. I did mention it to the bar lady and she said it usually did come fresh. I think maybe a refund was in order but I forgot to mention it on checkout

We stayed two nights in September after booking our daughters wedding at The Calcot hotel 20 months in advance and what a truly remarkable day it was. Many thanks to Andrew and his team in providing a wonderful service. Rooms were clean, food was hot, setting and venue were perfect from morning breakfast through to the late night disco. Would certainly have no hesitation in recommending the Calcot to hold your family functions, especially weddings. Thank you everyone to whom played a part with the organising of our daughters wedding and giving her friends and family such wonderful memories to hold onto forever.

    « Sunday Carvery »

Sunday carvery birthday meal, table booked for 9 people for 12:30. Waited to be seated for about 5 minutes whilst the staff stood in the corner and had a good old chin wag with each other! Wanted a veggie option was told it was a pasta dish so ordered one of these right at the beginning. Starters came quite quickly but really not much there. Small piece of fish and ready buttered triangle of bread (which was in fact margarine!), small bowls of soup that came with rock hard butter so you couldn't spread it onto the bread! Help yourself to the main course obviously, meat all okay but veg quite hard and peas were like little bullets! Asked for the veggie meal and chef shouted out to some one in the back 'put some pasta on'!! All 9 of us seated and eating our dinners including the person who ordered the veggie meal - she had nearly finished her vegetables by the time the pasta came out. Why when the dish was ordered right at the start was this not ready with the rest of the meals? Choice of deserts but not huge portions - no cream with the fruit salad either! Staff more intent on having a chat with each other. Disappointed meal. Think they could do better.

My brother and I stayed here for a family wedding Friday and Saturday nights. We had a lovely carvery meal on the Friday evening and there was also a Motown/Old Skool disco night on too so that was a bonus. I would certainly recommend this hotel to anyone in the area.

« So many little things »

Room was not of a high standard, walls are not sound proofed enough as we were disturbed by talking and TV from next door. No fridge or bar in room, bathroom was small and cramped when using the sink. Bed was small and mattress bouncy, every time you moved it was like being on a bouncy castle. Our room was by the main road and hence noisy so we could not have the window open, this was made worse by the fact we requested a quiet room.

Stayed just the one night, on arrival we were told we had been upgraded to a bigger room, but unfortunately the room smelt of smoke! We reported the smell and the man I told changed our room straight away, (another upgraded room) apologising, explaining people still smoke in the rooms even though everywhere is non smoking. This is not the hotels fault.. Lovely hotel, the room was spotless Would definitely stay again

    « Dinner dance »

What a fantastic weekend we had staying here! Pauline and her team liked after us very well and catered for everyone perfectly. We had a dinner dance for around 100 people and it was great. The down sides were, the room where we had the dinner dance was very hot and took an age to cool down. One member of the serving team was chewing gum whilst serving and really didn't look like she wanted to be there. The gentleman behind the bar in the lounge area was a delight but when he left, it was very difficult to get a drink and we waited 17 minutes at one stage for someone to arrive to serve us and that was after we spoke to someone at the reception. However, the good points were plentiful. The food was lovely. The place itself is really nice. 99% of the staff couldn't do enough for us. The room we stayed in was very clean and airy. The fact the team brought out the food in the evening and it was all piping hot, fresh and very tasty was amazing. No one had a cold meal. How did they do that? ?? Overall, it was a great experience and we're definately going back. We have a wedding to go to there next year and will certainly be booking a room! Thank you so much The Calcot Hotel! Great job! ????

I was looking for somewhere near Reading, but not in the centre. This hotel is easy accessible from the M4 and easy to find. Plenty of car park spaces. Reception was warm and friendly and well organised. Room was the right size for a 1 night stopover and had the usual facilities.Met the family in the bar area, which was light and airy. Bar service was fast and friendly. Reserved a table for the family and was welcomed there .Good choice of food with daily specials available. Service was of a high standard and the prices were reasonable. Even catered for my daughter's wheat intolerance. Hag a good night's sleep and enjoyed a good breakfast. Everything you could possibly want. Hot food was well presented in labelled covered dishes. Well worth the £10.25 per person.

On the outside this hotel looks more modern than it is inside. That said, it was lovely, clean and tidy. The room was a good size as was the bathroom and also the shower was a double shower. I've stayed at the Calcot several times. The staff are superb: always helpful, friendly and thoughtful. Rooms are clean and have everything you need. « Try it, I did and will go back! »

Spent two days here whilst in the area on business during very warm weather. Although the bedrooms don't have air conditioning they were comfortable and not hot. The bar looks a little out of date as does the restaurant but the food in the restaurant was very good indeed. The bar sadly doesn't do food and hotel guests have to use the restaurant or pay a rather hefty £5 room service charge. Don't be put off by its location on the A4, I had a room at the front overlooking the car park and the A4 and wasn't bothered by noise even when I had the window open. All in a good hotel with very friendly staff and management, one I would happily return to again.

« Good Hotel But THE NOISE »

Spent two nights at the hotel and admit rooms were clean and fresh and breakfast was buffet but basically freshly cooked in front of you so no complaints there. Problems we had were due to a wedding being held on the Saturday night and although from our room you could not hear any noise from the wedding reception itself the guests making their way back to rooms throughout the night were very noisy in corridors, shouting and speaking for long periods which meant we got no sleep the first night. Did ask for a room change next morning where I was told "well there was a wedding going on" as if this was a good enough reason fo my wife and I to suffer a sleepless night. There was then a mix up of changing rooms where the day people didn't tell the evening staff which room they had moved us to and we spent about 15 minutes guessing which room we had been put into. Emailed the manager on our return home but did not get any reply until I sent a second email where again I was basically told the noise was my fault as I should have phoned reception and they would have dealt with it, although I explained that by the time I had phoned and reception decided to make the effort of checking out the noise would have moved on. I suggested to hotel that they should check to see if guests were with any functions and if so put them close to reception and if not with function move to areas further away where noisy party makers would not disturb others. I was told this is the policy but I was not asked and nor were 6 other guests that I know stayed at same time! Hotel also has very annoying open door alarms that sound like star wars laser guns (zoom zoom zoom zoom) if a room door is not closed fully. This again is very annoying during the evening, night and early morning when other guests are leaving or returning to their rooms and do not shut their doors fully. Would suggest the hotel gets rid of these. If a guest hasn't got the sense to shut their own door then that's their own stupid fault, the rest of the guests along the same corridor should not have to suffer due to their stupidity!

Good, dependable hotel and typical Best Western. Cannot say much to moan about to be fair, but nothing outstanding or that sets it apart from most hence the average. Three star is perfect rating. Would consider it again but at same time would not rush back. Nice staff but seemed to be waiting at check-in and out as well as at bar before evening meal. Evening meal was average at best. If was returning, would look elsewhere for food.

My 102 year old mother has lived next to this hotel for many years so it was only right that when she passed away recently, the hotel was our choice for family and friends to gather after the funeral to say a final farewell. Myself and a friend were the first to arrive and we walked into reception expecting to find a direction sign or a member of staff to welcome our guests, there was nothing. We walked on and asked at the desk where we should go and someone on the phone pointed to a pair of swing doors. On pushing these doors open we found ourselves in a very cold dark hall and the only sign there was something going on were a few tables with cloths on. We stood in this room as more of our guests arrived and still no member of staff turned up to greet us. My sister went to find a member of staff and asked where the refreshments were and she was told that nothing is put out early because the heat drys the food up. My sister pointed out that the air conditioning was on and the room was very cold and dark, my sister asked for the air conditioning to be turned off but it remained on until we were about to leave. A member of staff then turned up with a tea trolley and the food then started to turn up. The first thing we noticed was that the food turned up on large china platters which were all chipped. Come on Calcot Hotel, is this really the best you could have done for our old mum, you only had one chance to get it right but it would seem that our faith in your professional abilities were misplaced. We will never forgive you for the treatment we received because there is nothing you can do to put the matter right. Our advice to anyone who is considering booking this establishment for any type of function to think again and to look on Tripadviser for a place which puts the customer first. I still have ties with the home next door but I will never visit the Calcot Hotel again

    « Old and creaky »

From the outside this hotel doesn't look too bad. The reception is fine and the bar area looks a bit ?old manish' but there's a certain charm to it. Not so charming when it's full of drunken contractors. The real issue is the bedroom. It's probably one of the most tired rooms I've seen and looks more like an 80s B&B. Scabby bathroom, thin floral curtains and seriously, seriously creaky floors. My room was at the top of the stairs and one person passing sounded like a heard. Needless to say, I didn't get a great night's sleep. I can't comment on the breakfast because I chose to stay in my bed to try and catch up on my sleep.

    « A sad end to a sad day »

My Mother booked a room for my Grandmothers wake and was charged £10.95pp for the privilege. The eta was 2.45pm but we actually arrived at 2.40pm. We were promised a manager would be on hand to greet us - there was no one there. We were promised tea, coffee and squash on arrival - there was none available. The bar, unsurprisingly was open and fully manned though. My Mother was already understandably in a very distressed state following the funeral and then was forced to try to find someone to sort out the mess. The room was absolutely freezing and as the average age of the mourners was about 80 and it wasn't a warm day, this was totally unnecessary. The numerous request for this to be turned off were refused. When the food finally arrived, all that it consisted of was a few platter of the worst looking sandwiches I've ever seen and some large chunks of tray bake cakes. The sandwiches all had indistinguishable fillings with nothing at all recognisable. Someone commented that they looked as if someone had just thrown them together using grey fillings. There wasn't a garnish to be seen to make them look anywhere near appetising which resulted in the majority of them going to waste. How you can justify charging £10.95pp is beyond me. Due to the freezing temperature in the room, the majority of the elderly mourners left very early which is hardly a fitting send of to my 101 year old Grandmother and she would have been very disappointed.

« Best hotel in Reading »

If you are looking to stay in Reading for leisure or business, you will find that the Calcot Hotel is the place to stay. The Calcot Hotel is very welcoming and all of the Staff that work there are very helpful and friendly. The rooms are always clean, comfortable and pleasant. You will enjoy your stay. If you are considering the Calcot hotel for a special event like a Wedding or Birthday party, I highly recommend that you choose this hotel. I recently got married at the Calcot and also hosted my Wife's 30th Birthday party, both of which exceeded my expectations. It is very clear throughout my many dealings with the Calcot Hotel that all of the staff that work there are brilliant at their jobs. I would like to especially thank Andrew for everything he has done for us. Andrew is the best Manager of a business that I have ever met. Thank you to everyone that works at the Calcot Hotel, I really appreciate all of your hard work and dedication.

    « Weekend Break »

Stayed here for a weekend as we were visiting friends nearby. Our room was clean and was in good decorate order, the Bathroom needs updating esp the Shower as it was a fixed one so was unable to direct it also was unable to was my hair over the bath. The flooring and bath panel needs replacing as both had faults. The windows do open wider than mentioned in previous review there is a lever you can press and the Wifi worked brilliant. Staff were very pleasant and friendly and very helpful. Sadly the food on Friday 29th was not that brilliant but understandable as they had a couple of hen parties and were quite busy. Would we stay again.... yes as quite reasonably price didn't have the breakfast as I found it rather expensive for what I would eat .

« Good service clean and comfortable »

Conveniently located the hotel staff were friendly and helpful. Rooms were comfortable and clean. Rooms on the front do suffer from some road noise, our rear facing room was quiet, we enjoyed a good nights sleep. Breakfast was pretty good but pricey at £10.95 a head

« Beware the weekend food »

Went on a Friday, booked the restaurant and we all had the worst meal we had for years. I had a bad experiance once in a Benidorm in an all inclusive - this was worse. I have had some really good food here in past years but on the 29/7/16 it was shocking.

    « Wedding »

My daughter had her wedding & reception here, could not have had a better time. The staff went beyond what was expected assisting us at every point, guiding us at what is a stressful time. On the day they advised, coordinated & soothed nervous people while still being professionally low key. I would have no hesitation in recommending them for your wedding day.

    « Good value »

We were going to a do nearby so wanted somewhere where we could walk from. We booked it and then read some of the reviews. We found the staff very friendly. We had travelled from Devon so had allowed extra time in case there was hold ups on the motorway so got there 2 hours early. Our room wasn't ready so they gave us another one. We heard no noise from the wedding disco and had a good night's sleep. The room was hot when we arrived but cooled down with the window open. The shower was good and the room recently decorated.

    « Very good »

Lovely and perfectly pleasant. Reception more than happy to top up teas and coffees and the hot chocolate was superb! Lovely breakfast in the morning with very helpful staff who ensured tea and coffee was kept topped up. Would definitely recommend :)

« Great place for an event and to stay. »

We got married here a year ago and I recently had my 30th birthday party too. Great atmosphere, wouldn't want to go anywhere else. Family from Manchester love staying here too. Everyone makes you feel at home. Great staff and amazing food in the restaurant.

    « Basic »

This hotel is very basic . Rooms small and dated . The outside looks a lot more pleasant than the inside !! Ok if you just want somewhere cheap to stay but don't stay here if you want something a bit special . There is far better out there for the price! Breakfast was very good tho and I asked the chef to cook me a well cooked egg which was not a problem .

    « Business/pleasure in the UK »

I am a Pom now living with my Australian wife in Melbourne but making periodic trips back to the UK. This was July/August 2016 and staying in the the UK and Moscow for business/pleasure. The Cacot hotel stood as as a pleasure for the informal and helpful single night we were there. Not air-conditioned but staff found cooler room and fans to save our bacon after a very hot and exhasting drive on Britain's crowded roads!

    4
    « Comfortable and friendly »

Clean and comfortable. Staff were very friendly. Breakfast was extra but good. Main problem was that wifi seemed to not work for most of our two night visit. Very hot but bar and restaurant areas pleasant.

    2
    « Disappointing »

The photos of the hotel are much nicer than the actual place! If you just want somewhere to sleep for the night then this hotel will be ok ....just avoid rooms 32 & 33. There is a noisy water tank above these rooms which kept us awake all night. The manager did move us the next day into a much quieter and nicer room (bed was much bigger) in what seemed to be a newer part of the hotel.

    « Lovely stay. »

Great location. We had a very comfortable stay. Lovely room and helpful staff. We requested a fan, as it was very hot and this was sorted straight away. Breakfast was yummy and great value (so much to choose from). The only downside was our bathroom; it was a awkward layout.

    5
« Great place and ideal location »

Have stayed here before but pleasantly surprised the rooms have had a makeover. Don't think there are lifts as none on my way to my room. Reception staff friendly. Very quiet inside but looks out onto main road so can be sometimes. Very close to sainsburys and ikea.

    3
    « Convenient Location...Surprisingly Quiet »

This is an older style hotel that is beginning to show its age now. However, the staff work hard to keep the hotel clean and tidy whilst providing a friendly, helpful welcome. Decent free WiFi. Great buffet breakfast that had plenty of freshly cooked hot food and importantly, nice hot plates. Excellent breakfast service, among the best I have experienced anywhere. Rooms OK, small TV, firm mattress and small bathroom, but everything worked and was nice and clean too. My room was on the main road and was surprisingly quiet.

    « Pleasant stay »

Clean room, thankfully not too warm. Easy check-in, and breakfast buffet was very nice. Just stayed for one night - would use this hotel again if I was staying in Reading, and will be looking at other BW hotels in other cities now.

    « Clean room »

Stayed there for just one night. The reception was very friendly and yet professional. Room was nice, although not the largest we stayed in on our trip but much better than the hotel we had in London. Room was clean and bed was comfortable. Bathroom was also very nice. Breakfast was very good and choice and quantities were in abundance. You have the choice of cold or hot breakfast. We also had dinner the evening of our arrival. There was a wedding being celebrated in the main dinning area so we had access to a smaller room indoor, with no access to the outdoors. Food was good. Good price-quality ratio.

    2
    « Disappointment »

This hotel was expensive for the type of the facilities provided. The room was very dark due to a small window. No air conditioning. Window opened only a small gap. Soundproofing poor. Kept awake by guest or someone above walking around late at night and very early in the morning. Restaurant disappointing. Paid a lot of money for main course only to find out that vegetables were all extra.

    3
« Clean and modern room. »

This is a functional hotel for the business traveller, not for people on a romantic holiday. The rooms are modern and stylish with all mod cons. The restaurant is surprisingly nice and the the food plentiful, normally I am used to reheats microwave food in these type of hotels, but I was pleasantly surprised. The on,y thing that let the hotel down was the breakfast, I arrived about 0900 for breakfast and clearly what was left was cooked a few hours earlier. The waiters seemed very disinterested and went for a cigarette a couple of times when we were there and when they were not busy they were texting on their phones. But not to dwell on the negatives the hotel is fine and what you would expect for a hotel in this location. I would stay here again but would give breakfast a miss.

« A good and fair priced Best Western »

Date of this stay 12th July 16 (which is my first stay here) Room 87 My ongoing experience of the hotel is as follows: 1) Arrival was straightforward using the Sat Nav instructions from the hotel 2) There is a large free car park that surrounds the hotel at the front 3) On arrival at the hotel the check in staff were pleasant and friendly 4) I received access to the free WIFI throughout my stay 5) All area's including the bedrooms were always well kept, tidy and clean. 6) My room No 87 was clean and well maintained (see the pictures) 7) The hotel is of the typical twee and older style hotel that you expect from the mainstream brand. From its quaint Italian rustic dining room to its 1980's styled bed rooms. It did however have fully modernized bathrooms. 8) The hotel is about 100m away from a BP petrol station who sell snacks, it's about a ½ to a mile walk to the local Sainsbury's 9) I enjoyed my evening meal (see pictures), the chef is excellent, my poached egg starter was perfectly cooked. I stay in hotels about 50-70 nights a year so I was delighted to see a number of healthy options on the menu, once again congratulations to the chef, I plumed for the healthy quinoa salad topped with a rare steak, the steak was excellent, but the quinoa lacked that flavor punch, it needed to be cooked in a stock with a dash of wine, perhaps some citrus and a few local herbs to make it perfect for me ( I'm a confirmed foody so like to share the love) 10) Breakfast was a traditional hot and cold buffet selection, however one of the main reasons I stay at Best Westerns is the freshly cooked breakfast option that they offer, that option was not available here, in particular the option to have kippers, or smoked haddock with poached eggs (a massive favorite of mine when staying in Best Westerns). However once again the chefs poached buffet eggs were spot on, but there was to be no fish, he has a real talent here and he's a great cook. You can tell that that the hotel does care about its breakfast as they serve really good quality produce not catering quality rubbish, for example they have a whole real honeycomb for breakfast that you scoop out real live honey from and a great cold meat and cheese selection. 11) Location, was ideally located for my visit close to the motorway, but it's out of town if that's what you need (about 3-4 miles) 12) Check out, was straight forward and hassle free In summary the hotel scores 9/10 for a good Best Western branded hotel that needs the lovely fresh cooked menu to score higher.

« An excellent venue for weddings and functions »

We stayed over Saturday night on 9th July. My husband sister-in-law had her 30th party. This was our second stay as she got married in the venue last year. The room we stayed in excellent. The room was spacious, bed was comfy, the room we stayed in have a decent size bath and shower. Spare towels, pillows, iron and ironing board were in the room already. The hotel is next door to a petrol station and a 20 minutes walk takes you to Sainsbury's. The hotel is about 3 miles out from Reading town centre. The hotel bar and lounge is well furnished and for the real ale drinkers they keep an excellent pint of Courage best bitter on. The hotel breakfast was very good (not excellent ran out of hash browns) as you can have a continental or cooked breakfast. Staff are friendly and polite.

    « Rude staff »

We stayed in this hotel as it was close to a friends wedding. We had 5 rooms between all of us and the staff was very very rude to all. Spoke to us like crap. The beds was rock hard and we all had bad necks from the bricks of the pillow! Defiantly would never stay here again!!

    « Top wedding venue »

We attended a family wedding and was very pleasantly surprised the day was organised like a military operation leaving nothing to chance. If you are considering getting married go and have a look 1st as I'm sure like all of us you will be very pleasantly surprised. The staff in this hotel made the whole experience truly remarkable, with special thanks to Theresa who not only made us feel very welcome she took it upon herself to look after a wedding guest with mental health issues for his 2 night stay. The hotel itself was clean the food both at the wedding and breakfast the following day was of exceptional quality. Thank you to everybody at the Calcot for a thoroughly enjoyable experience

    3
« Close to the M4 a little old fashioned but nice »

I used to stay at this hotel in the 1980's and although improvements have been made it still has some old fashioned charm. My room was clean and specious with a strong free WiFi signal. I had my evening meal in the restaurant from the set menu which was good value money and although not haute cuisine it was very good. Breakfast was buffet style with hot and cold options. There is a small bar and free parking. Excellent place to stay if on business in the area as the price for the room was much cheaper than other chain hotels in the region.

    « Ok »

The hotel is easy to find. Free parking at the front of the hotel. The reception was efficient. The room was well present with everything you need. The decor is dated and could do with a refresh. Breakfast was good. Unusually (I've never seen it before) they had a big slab of honeycomb for breakfast which I thought was a nice touch. I would stay again.

« On a visit to see my grandkids »

This hotel is very clean and comfortable. Rooms are well equipped, I am partially disabled walking wise. When booked the accessible room did not register. However the lady behind the reception went out of her way to find us a room on the first floor. Also I think was the assistant manager or manager, found us a lovely room with a shower, although there was 2 weddings and the hotel was so busy. Nothing was too much trouble. We were very pleased with the whole stay, and will be going there again. Thank you all the staff at cal it.

    « Average »

Average hotel, with slightly dated décor. single bed reasonably comfortable and food served to a good standard. short on plug sockets to charge my phone, and plug my lap top into, as this was a business trip. Overall ok, and not the worst place I have stayed.

    5
    « Very friendly »

As a solo female traveller, I am always very aware of safety when staying in new places. The staff at this hotel were very kind and thoughtful to me. Staff were very helpful and I got the bathroom with walk in shower that I requested. Everywhere was spotlessly clean and comfortable.

    5
    « Maintains high standards »

I have been visiting this hotel on business approx once a year over a number of years and it never dissapoints. The standard of the rooms and the cleanliness is second to none. The management moved me rooms as they were having functions on both nights of my stay and were concerned I would be disturbed. In doing this they changed me from a very pretty single room to a double which was very comfortable and less stairs for someone with a dodgy knee. Once again I enjoyed all my meals. The staff make you feel very welcome and I will this time give a special mention to the cleaning staff spotless well done.

    3
« Much Better on Pictures »

I'm not sure whether I was just unfortunate with my room allocation, but I wasn't very impressed. The pictures on the website looked lovely but everything from the impression driving up to the hotel were just a little disappointing. Plenty of free parking. Check in was fine, staff very friendly. The hallway was a little confusing, and when I got into my room it smelt quite foisty. There's a well stocked selection of tea & coffee, but every single thing was a random brand I'd never heard of and it wasn't very nice. There was also only one packet of biscuits. There was a wedding with a very loud disco on til after midnight which made sleeping any earlier impossible. There are toiletries in the bathroom, shampoo but no conditioner and the others were half used. There was a bath which ran very quickly. There was a hairdryer on the wall in the bathroom, and also one in the desk drawer, and also an ironing board. There was a fan in the room which was useful as it was very warm. TV was good with good reception and good free wifi. Breakfast in the morning was excellent, great selection, friendly service. The have teas, coffee (lactose free milk which I wish I'd read before ordering my drink! Standard hot food, warm croissants, cheese & ham, toast, yoghurt, juices & some fancy looking honey. Not a bad stay but I was expecting a bit more.

« A good buffet for our wake »

Not the most cheeriest of visits. But nevertheless they put on a good buffet. Hot and cold food. Varying from sandwiches to quiche and samosa to spring rolls. And sausages that were amazing!! All went down well and well done to the staff there on a difficult day.

    5
    « Lovely hotel »

We just spent two nights at this hotel to attend a wedding nearby. The rooms were spotless with tea and coffee facilities provided and also a decent hairdryer. The bed was very comfortable and the modern bathroom equipped with toiletries. The staff were all very friendly and helpful and we were served an excellent breakfast with a big choice of cooked or cold dishes. The restaurant is a very pleasant and bright room and the bar area is also welcoming and comfortable with additional seating outside weather permitting! I would highly recommend this hotel.

« Lovely hotel, excellent staff »

My wife, son and daughter and myself spent two nights at the Calcot Hotel as we were in the area for a family wedding. We had two twin rooms which both had, unusually, two single beds rather that double beds. This actually suited me as I was sharing a room with my 21 year old son! Our room was very good with a small fully equipped bathroom with shower. We had breakfast both days and this was buffet style and was excellent. The food was very hot which is sometimes not the case with buffet food and we had as much tea and coffee as we wanted. The staff in the dining room were very attentive and made sure we had everything we needed. The hotel itself is a lovely building and the dining area was being used for a wedding when we got there. I would consider it to be an excellent venue for a medium sized wedding as the dining area is a good size but nicely informal. We had a peek into the room where the ceremony was taking place and it looked fabulous. A few of our family members were staying in the hotel and there are areas where you can sit, chat and have a drink. There is also seating outside which was good on the day we left as the weather was fine and warm. The hotel staff were all brilliant but a special mention must go to the receptionist, Rose Webster, who was great. She arranged our taxis on both evenings, was really friendly every time I spoke to her and even sorted out a plaster for my cut finger - Employee of the Month Award please! All on all a very nice hotel and I would definitely stay there again if I was in the area.

« Mercury and May Tribute Evening »

I went with a group of visually impaired adults and their friends to last Friday's tribute evening. I was able to choose our seating area prior to the night, which ensured our members had the best possible viewing experience. The tables were very attractively laid out, the meal choices were excellent and the food was delicious - very good quality and quantity and piping hot. We also enjoyed the 2 for 1 drinks offer prior to the meal. Service was first class. The show was great fun and the performers also looked like they were enjoying themselves. We were made to feel very welcome and will definitely be arranging another trip there for our members in the not too distant future. Everyone in our party thought it was very good value for money - so we will be back! Thank you to everyone at The Calcot Hotel for a great evening.

    « Much better than you'd expect......... »

I was dreading staying here, it had all the hallmarks of a 'Faulty Towers' experience, but, it was not the case whatsoever. The staff were fantastic, I'm not sure if they have organised training but whoever is responsible for it should be commended. The food was pretty good, I was pleasantly surprised. They clearly knew the way to my heart, by serving up what I would class as 'proper' portions. My room was nothing special but served its purpose and I couldn't complain at all.

    3
« DO NOT TAKE A SMALL ROOM »

The hotel on first arrival was good, the room seemed 'ok' we were told that it was small room but IT WAS VERY SMALL and the bed was a small double! However after a good evening meal and retiring to our room we opened the windows for air and then we found the problem. The air conditioning plant was right outside our room but the room had no air conditioning. Not a good nights sleep. Food overall was expectable and breakfast had a good range.

    4
    « Calcot Hotel, Reading »

This Best Western Hotel is very good indeed. The hotel is very well maintained and the staff are wonderful. The hotel is close to the M4 and enjoys easy road access into the center of Reading. Overall I considered my stay as very good value for money.

    5
    « Great Stay »

Best hotel l have stayed in for along time . The hotel was very clean &tidy.I liked the style of the hotel. All staff excellent in all departments. The only negative could hear traffic from busy road if you had to open window. So would prefer a room at the back of the hotel.

« Moving Overseas - Our home for a week »

My husband and I stayed here for a week before being posted overseas whilst we packed up our life in the UK, and I am very glad of the options we were given we stayed here. Our room was clean, tidy and perfect for our stay, the food we had was very good, all the staff were lovely and couldn't do enough for us and what was really stressful time for us was made much easier due to the service we received whilst staying here, coupled with being very good value for money I would strongly recommend this is hotel to anyone.

    4
« leisure stay to tour area »

Effortless booking, check in, excellent service. Nicely decorated and clean hotel. Only negative would be the disappointing quality of an evening meal (braised steak) overloaded with salt so as to be almost inedible. The location was ideal for our visit, taking in the local area.

    3
    « Good value »

Stayed here for one night after a wedding near by. We had originally booked another hotel near by which badly let us down (A week prior to our stay they cancelled our reservation) Best Western were fantastic in helping us and the rest of our party (14) to accommodate us. The room and bed were comfortable for one night. Although the bathroom was small it was adequate and served its purpose. The buffet breakfast was very good value and had a reasonable choice for cooked breakfast, there was also a small selection for a continental breakfast. Staff were friendly and helpful. Thank you Best Western for looking after us.

« Old, pricey sometimes & terrible restaurant »

I have stayed in Best Western Calcot Hotel for several weeks within few months while being on the training & before moving to Reading. 1. Room(s): for various prices (from £60 up to £100+ a night) I was getting different rooms (double or single bed) in different parts of the hotel - it doesn't mean for smaller room there was a lower price - it happened to be opposite. Rooms were clean but felt used (especially bathrooms). Depending on the side of the building rooms were dark. 2. Service: staff very friendly & helpful. 3. Facilities: food in the restaurant was fat & very average. Priced between £10 - £15 per meal. I had been using it because there is not much choice around the hotel (unless you enjoy McDonald's at retail park nearby). Bar serves beer & drinks, you can watch a game. Not good for business meetings as it's dark in there and I was feeling depressingly. 4. Location: if you are not going to Reading town centre then it's good alternative. Convenient location very close to J12 of M4 motorway. Overall: 2/5 - definitely not for nice weekend stay. I would rather use it for a quick stay between next journey and I wouldn't expect much. Overpriced but it's close to London.

We booked a twin room which was very clean, with all the usual things you'd expect. Satellite TV, tea/coffee etc. The shower was fantastic and the bed was one of the comfiest iv'e slept in. Evening meal was good and reasonably priced as was the breakfast. The restaurant and bar area are very nice and the staff very pleasant. I would definitely recommend this hotel.

    « A good low-cost facility »

This hotel is a very nice hotel on the A4 at Calcot, just west of Reading. Very good value on a Friday night. Comfortable room but the bathroom is very small. Breakfast was OK, very pleasant and attendance service. As much toast and tea/coffee as you could possibly want.

    « friendly greeting »

We were seeking a budget price hotel for a visit to Newbury Showground. Booked room with shower with easy access for disability. Presented with super clean room with all required facilities. Even had wife's favourite Dove Soaps in bathroom. Ironing board and iron in room!

    « Great hotel »

Always stay here when I'm in reading on business related trips, it's only 5 minutes away from where have to be, very friendly staff, and clean rooms. The restaurant is excellent, great menu selection. Thank guys

« Back to the future »

It's on par with most standard Best Western hotels. Great location off M4. Modern on the outside and oldie worldie in a good way on the inside. Nice cosy bar and large restaurant with a decent menu. Good buffet breakfast with great service from the staff. The room was reasonable and large enough with all the usual bits and pieces. The bathroom was modern with a lovely powerful shower it's gets a 9.5. All very clean and tidy all at a good price for the area. Ample parking too couldn't really find faults on this visit.

« A very good hotel and restaurant »

Spent 1 night here midweek on business, hotel full, very friendly meet and greet, room comfortable, OK shower with v soft towels, slept well, did not have breakfast. Had evening meal which was very good, extensive and varied menu, I ate pate then cod wrapped in ham, well presented and tasty, all for £16. I would recommend here

    3
    « A little dated »

Food nice, rooms okay a little dated. Not the greatest best Western I have ever stayed in. But okay for business. Friendly staff. Had a room with just a shower and requested a room with a bath, this was no problem

    2
« Average room, overpriced food »

Staying here overnight on business travel. The room itself is comfortable though very basic and dated. Dinner was overpriced and disappointing. The starter was awful and the steak consisted of just the steak, chips and 1 tomato for £16. You would get more value and a nicer stay at a Premier Inn or Travelodge for the same if not cheaper price.

room was comfortable and the service good. Only thought would be that the room I stayed in might get very stuffy in hot weather as there was no air conditioning. Breakfast was good although I didn't eat in the evening.

This is a very nice hotel, all of the staff were very friendly and helpful and cheerful. We stayed for one night as it was for a special birthday party in Reading. On returning just before midnight the night porter welcomed us back, went to the bar and we had a very nice drink to wind down before going to bed. The bedroom was clean and comfortable, the shower head could be lower and the soap container over the was basin was empty. You can hear noise from other rooms but not to bad and can be expected in a lovely building like this. Saturday afternoon we had coffee and sandwiches in the lounge area. Fresh and nicely presented. Thought could be a better selection of snacks as only sandwiches were available. The lounge was comfortable and relaxing, not all singing and dancing and noisy like some hotels, made it very nice. Sunday breakfast, again staff really helpful and friendly, the food supplies gave a nice selection of both cold and hot food. The hot breakfast basic, poached and fried eggs, bacon, baked bean, tomatoes, hash browns, plenty of toast tea and coffee. Altogether a very enjoyable stay in a traditional hotel.

    « Try it - you'll like it »

Stayed for 2 nights and will definitely return. We have stayed at other hotels in the area, including some that cost much more and this is the best for value and friendly service. We were pleased with our room and there is a good selection at breakfast. We ate in the restaurant one evening, there was plenty to choose from the menu and we enjoyed our meals.

« LOVE TO STAY HERE »

I will recommend this hotel to every one due to its location, hospitality and efficient staff. I am staying at this hotel every week for the past almost one year and it has improved a lot. All the rooms have been re-furbished as well as toilets.

« Great pre Wedding Party »

We arrived to a warm welcome and found a clean comfortable room with a good hair dryer (not one of the tiny travel type), which was a pleasant surprise. We ate at the hotel and the food was good for the price, which was average for this type of hotel. I are sirloin steak, it was around £14 .The waitress was really friendly. Breakfast was very good. The barman was cheery and polite to the crowd of us who were drinking to celebrate a wedding the following day.

    « Enjoyable stay »

Went for a one night stay, but when we arrived there were a couple of problems which were sorted out immediately but the very obliging staff. The room was clean, the bed was comfortable, the shower hot and the breakfast was good. Will stay here again when we visit the area.

    « A Nice friendly hotel »

the free wifi in the hotel is superb , the staff are friendly , a lovely breakfast , the rooms are large but has thin walls and doors slamming shut can be heard early in the morning. The hotel is a bit dated but didn't put me off , check in and out was no problem

« easy access, good and simple with lots of parking »

We have stayed overnight after event. Arriving late, signed the ready registration form and went to sleep. We have booked Standard Double Room room. The room is simple and clean. good access , easy to find and lots of of parking.

    « Convenient Location »

Stayed here one night. Check in was efficient and helpful. Bedroom on the ground floor was ok - view of the rear yard - but comfortable, extra pillows in the wardrobe good. Small / compact bathroom but well supplied and warm. Breakfast not included in our rate but tea/coffee available in the room.Seem to get a better deal booking direct with the hotel. Check out staff busy so did not ask about our stay or say goodbye.Easy to find off the M4, plenty of parking and location convenient to our evening function - even if the local cab driver charged us £10 for a 1..4 mile trip at 7 in the evening.

« Excellent staff, great room, great breakfast »

Despite arriving after 11pm the check in staff were cheerful & helpful. The room was large, had everything a business traveller needs (or a tourist for that matter), was quiet, comfortable and extremely clean. The bathroom was small but again extremely clean and with decent shower so overall no complaints. Breakfast was all it should be, made better by outstanding restaurant service, advertised as a buffet but actually served to the table. In summary, great quality and value for money, an enjoyable place to stay so I'll be coming back.

    « Excellent »

We booked for two nights a few days ago for visiting a relative who had been taken into the local hospice, we thought this would be near and handy and liked the reviews. We had room 92, double bedded room with a walk in shower which was a request from us for health reasons.... This room did not have a view, but didn't bother us as we were only here for one reason, to say goodbye to someone at the hospice, this room was nice and quiet which was good..... It was clean and the housekeeping staff were very good... We arrived on Sunday afternoon, after booking in we were advised that we needed to be at the hospice sooner rather than later..sadly our relative passed away early hours the next day, anyway as we were not needed to stay longer, we asked reception if we could cancel that night as we really wanted to get home again, and we were given a refund for the night not spent there, this was very kind of the hotel as they didn't have any legal obligation to do this, but this was very good of them, and it a kindness we will not forget. When we return for the funeral we will certainly be booking again, and have recommended to the family that it would be a good idea to hold the wake at the calcot hotel too.. Breakfast was excellent and the waiting on staff very polite and helpful. Thank you once again, we are back Home in Norfolk now..

    « OK hotel »

Staff were great, in the bar, restaurant and reception . corridor leading to our room stank of BO. First night the TV did not work. Lamp in the room did not work. Cleanliness was average in the room. Only stayed in this hotel while having the heating fixed at home. I've paid less in a local chain and paid less

    « Dated but adequate. »

Stayed here whilst working in Reading. Hotel is well placed for access into Reading and the surrounding area but could benefit from some modernisation. I wouldn't recommend the Restaurant as I didn't feel it offered good value for money.

    « Friendly »

I came here as my daughter was here on business so I was also in the area so instead of taking two cars we took the one . I went into the hotel to sit and have a cold drink and a panni and was served by a lady in the bar area called Christine. I must say what a plesant and helpful woman. She waited on me with such a friendly manner . If u was coming again to reading I would deffinately come here . It is easy to find from the M4 and so easy to stay here and get to the centre of reading. For business meetings this is such a perfect hotel. Thankful again to the lady called Christine.

    « Family friendly hotel. »

We cannot fault this hotel. We were attending a family funeral, so having stayed here previously having had a good experience and reading recent reviews decided to book it. Probably the main thing was the location conveniently situated close to the motorway. We also were meeting friends there and the staff made us a good selection of sandwiches for afternoon tea. The receptionist was very friendly in welcoming us to the hotel. The room was very clean and of a good standard and service. We ate in the restaurant the first evening, with good service and good food. The second evening we had room service, as we just wanted to chill, as we had a very tiring day. The food was on time and served by a friendly member of staff. We would not hesitate to return in the future. The first morning we were treated to fresh eggs cooked to order, as it wasn't very busy. This was a lovely surprise. It is self service mainly and there is a good variety of fruit, cereals and hot plates for cooked food. Finally, there is free wifi which is quick in the bedrooms.

    « Soul nights »

Stayed here a few times now, love it, clean, tidy, staff great and the breakfast is just awesome. If you Soul music they have events on check out there dates. Brilliant nights. Me and friends always make a wk end of it here very good for shopping and best to get a taxi into town as it does get very busy.

Popped into the hotel for a birthday drink. Staff very friendly and helpful. The drinks are a little expensive, but no more than you would expect from a hotel. Lots of parking available and a good seating area.

    « Convenient »

We used this hotel en route to stay with family. The staff were very friendly and amenities were very clean. There was a 60s/70s evening taking place that evening. Fortunately our room was far away enough not to hear the music but the walls are very thin and we could hear a group of ladies getting ready in the next room, they were very loud. We ate in the restaurant but had to wait a while to be seated as the waitress was sorting out someone's meal and taking it back to the kitchen. Decided to go for Fish & chips as we thought that a safe bet - wrong! Chips were very brown but soft and the fish was very over cooked. Went for coffee in bar afterwards and asked for decaf from the machine, after quite a wait we were presented with a teapot of instant coffee. The barman was very apologetic and did take it off the bill. We were early for breakfast which was buffet style and was ok but the toast was soft and cold. The waitress did offer to get fresh when I mentioned it but by then we had finished anyway. Don't think we will be rushing back for a return visit.

« Raised above average by breakfast, WiFi and staff. »

This is just an average Best Western on the outskirts of Reading. It's raised above average by really good wifi (Yes Hilton it puts your poor connection to shame!) A good breakfast buffet selection and staff who are attentive and friendly. It's not a luxury hotel but for its 3 star rating it does very admirably. And in a few respects puts 4 star establishments to shame.

    « Great Night Out »

Attended the Comedy Night on Saturday and had a fabulous time. Food and service second to non with the added bonus of being served by Basil Fawlty himself, aided by Frank Spencer and Patsy from Ad Fab!!! Only downside were the few guests who decided they would rather talk than enjoy the entertainment which meant at times we could not hear what was being said. Great disco afterwards with some great movers on the dance floor! Looking forward to our next visit.

    « Weird training... »

Not recommended unless as a last resort. Room was clean but shower was very weak and the sink didn't drain. On checkin my card was used to pay for both my colleague and I but without stating so. On checkout same thing happened and bill had to be reworked several times and the receptionist couldn't confirm by how much my card had been debited. Tried to set up a tab but kept getting bits of paper to sign until I refused to do so (why take a swipe and annoy someone like this). Didn't have breakfast and the restaurant shut before stated closing time so could only fix up a sandwich. I cannot recommend this place frankly - Best Western is NOT a chain as each hotel is operated independently and the Calcot rather poorly

    3
    « Handy Location close to M4 »

I have been to this Hotel for many functions but this was my first overnight stay. On the plus side - the staff were all very friendly. The room was clean but quite small for a Twin room. The bathroom was spacious but dated. The complimentary shower gel/soap were attached in dispensers on the wall. Problem was if you were having a bath - the dispenser was high up at the other end by the shower. There were no complimentary face cloths in the bathroom either. In the bedroom there were no complimentary bath robes or slippers which from a 3 star AA hotel I would have expected. Also would have expected some complimentary bottles of water. The walls are paper thin and clearly not soundproofed. The breakfast was a little disappointing - cold plates - barely warm food - no hash browns or mushrooms. All in all its the little things that make it memorable. Wouldn't rush back to stay over.

« Best western calcot hotel »

This is a small hotel in a small town of calcot...very nice to stay for a day or two...the hotel serves breakfast...the rooms are small and basic..though the surroundings are good..this is a budget hotel in best western chain of hotels...

« Traditional style hotel where staff make an effort »

I found this hotel to be functional and it worked for me because it was in a good location and had easy parking. It was a basic, but comfortable bedroom with no frills, and a functional bathroom which had recently been refurbished. The radiator in the bathroom and the radiator in the bedroom seemed to be on the same heating circuit, so you had heating in either one or the other location, but not both at the same time. What the hotel did not have in charm, or modern facilities, it made up for in terms of service. The staff are attentive and helpful, and whilst you can clearly see they follow a strict process (how they show you to the table, tell you about the meal options etc) none the less it was a pleasurable experience because you are treated like a person and not an inconvenience. Food was basic, but did the job of providing nourishment. Don't expect any extra frills. There was free wifi but no leisure facilities of any kind. However for those that can bear to go outdoors there is a good park (go right along towards the M4) nearby for running around, so that is a good alternative. I would stay in it again if I needed to be in the area.

    4
« A nice place to stay outside reading with easy parking »

We stayed at this hotel for one night and chose it for its easy to get to location outside of reading. The hotel was clean and the reception star helpful. The WIFI was good and the rooms comfortable although the shower was too hot and we had to take baths instead but that was ok. It is very easy to get to without getting caught in central reading traffic and is about 15 mons drive outside of reading but just off the M4 junction. The rooms are situated over a few levels, you don't need the dreaded key cards to get to the rooms as this can be nightmare when you have left it in the room with your other half. Sainsbury is located a few minutes away so it is very easy to nip out to to get snacks and breakfast in the morning - overall a great hotel and great value for money.

    « Party »

Whilst this review is for a party, I have to add that I have used Best Western Calcot for Christmas work parties, suppliers accommodation and attended New Years and numerous party events. All of which gave us the confidence to book a double family party. The reception staff are always welcoming, as are all the waiting, bar and room service staff. Although part of the Best Western group, this is family owned and gives a family feel whilst still professional and efficient. The party DJ was spot on, as was the food and many of our guests commented on having 'forgot' about how good the venue was after not using it for some time. We got the impression that would be soon rectified. Compared to other venues, the drinks are well priced, as are the rooms, which are well and modern decorated and good value. If coming into Reading, it's positioned well near the M4 and a bus ride or 10 min taxi ride into Reading. Huge car park and with a variety of rooms large and small to use fr functions.

« Family occasion at ideal location close to M4. »

Very comfortable bedrooms and public areas. Restaurant homely with attentive staff and good quality cuisine. Sensible car parking at front of hotel close to reception area. All rooms very clean and tidy. A special mention of certain staff member namely Pauline, Sam (presumably Samantha), at the bar and Karen (restaurant and bar). This visit was for my father's wake and our guests and friends were certainly well looked after. Great value and good deal for rooms for those attending the event.

    « Take That/Four Seasons - great night out »

Visited with friends for the Four Seasons meet Take That night. The food was lovely, I had steak and it was perfect. All the staff were friendly and gave a great service. Thoroughly enjoyed the show (great to have the variety of two groups and genre) and just to complete a great night out a good disco and dancing.

    4
    « Great Food »

I really enjoy the food here both at breakfast and evening meal. The choice and quality is superb and at a reasonable price. I cannot praise the staff highly enough, especially the restaurant staff who are ever friendly and take great pride in the way they serve guests. An area for improvement would be internal décor, whilst clean could do with modernisation in some areas.

« Served a purpose. Let down by room service. »

Stayed a night here with a friend as we were in the area and needed somewhere for the night. Clean, pleasant, comfortable and perfectly suited to our needs. The room was simple but had everything we needed. Breakfast was a self-service buffet style which had a good selection of fresh items and we had no complaints. The biggest issue we had was ordering room service. We tried to order from the menu in the room but had to work to convince the person on the phone that the items we wanted were actually on the menu. Eventually they agreed and delivered our order, missing one of the extras we'd ordered. Would stay there again but probably not use room service.

« Calcot Made Daughter's Wedding Day Magical »

Our daughter's wedding was held at the Calcot Hotel last Saturday and from start to finish the service we received was excellent. Right from booking the venue through to the ceremony and reception the organisation was first class. All of the staff were efficient and removed a lot of the hastle that goes into planning a wedding and made the day almost stress free. The room for the service was laid out nicely for the ceremony so that everyone could easily see the bride and groom make their vows. The layout of the room for the wedding breakfast was fabulous, the staff at the hotel gave expert advice on this and carried out all of my daughter's wishes. The carvery for the meal was also excellent, you could not see through the meat as you can at some well known Carveries! Christine took on the duties of toast master and kept us all in check. The room was then transformed for the evening reception with a DJ and disco included in the package. Every single member of staff were truly intent on making sure everything went to plan and the day enjoyed by everybody, this they achieved admirably. Nothing was too much trouble and we were just left to enjoy the occasion. My wife and I booked a room for the night and were pleasantly surprised with the comfort of the room and the delicious buffet breakfast. Again all of the staff, many of whom had been working the previous day, were on hand to make sure you had everything you needed. Having heard of sums being banded around for wedding venues elsewhere the Calcot Hotel offer a very competitive package while removing a lot of the stress as I have already said. I would certainly recommend it to other potential Father's of the Bride. Well done to all.

    « Another Motown night! »

Great night on Friday at Motown evening. We all had lovely rooms and food and service was very good and Tony (DJ) was (even though he was not very well) fabulous as always. All my friends had a wonderful time and that is all that matters - it was a lovely way to celebrate my birthday.

    2
    « Depressing »

Very dated décor, miserable serving staff and stingy portions. If you feel comfortable in the 1970s, or have an early morning meeting that requires access to the M4, then perhaps this is a good choice of hotel for you. Otherwise, I couldn't possibly recommend staying here - I would have felt much more at home in a Travelodge or Premier Inn, and for a third of the price. The term 'Delusions of Grandeur' comes to mind.

    4
    « Convenient & comfortable »

For starters - easy to locate about i mile from the M4, Ample parking but note I arrived on a Sunday evening! I imagine the BW Calcot does well as primarily a business/function hotel rather than catering for families.. Reception greeting was efficient, room was comfortable and very clean and with usual facilities. There were occasional door-banging noises in the corridor during the evening but otherwise no problems. The restaurant dinner menu wasn't especially exciting but the food was good and portions large. Breakfast had plenty of options and seemed to be on a "have as much as you want" self service basis. Breakfast charge was £10 and fair value in view of the choice on offer. Restaurant staff for both meals were excellent and attentive. Really good. All in all the hotel offered fair value for money and I would certainly stay again should I need to re-visit Reading.

    4
    « Great Sunday carvery »

Whilst I did live very near this hotel for nearly 30 years and have visited for various functions I'd never had Sunday lunch here. It was really busy with several large parties but overall it was excellent value and we all had an enjoyable afternoon.

    5
« Superb in all respects! »

I booked this room as our Christmas 'do' was being held here. The room can only be described as absolutely spotless, spacious and fitted out to a high standard. For the price that I paid, it was a bargain and I wouldn't hesitate to recommend this hotel to anyone. Thanks everyone for a super end to a super night!!

    5
    « Fantastic christmas party!!! »

We had another wonderful party night at this lovely hotel. It is our third year running and we have no intention of visiting elsewhere. The service, food and atmosphere were superb and it represents excellent value for money. Plenty of parking and our room was gorgeous.

    3
    « Comfortable »

Good location for travel. Room may have been a little dated but the bed was really comfortable, and that's what is most important. Hairdryer needs updating to a normal handheld and there were a couple of lights not working in the room, I am sure though had I asked reception that would have been addressed as everyone was really helpful - I just kept forgetting to mention. Dinner was good and the breakfast was well presented, staff all seemed to be helpful and friendly too so a pleasant enough stay all round.

« Appalling Christmas Dinner and Dance »

Went here for a midweek work Christmas Party and although it was one of their cheaper nights I would still expect a good standard of party but it was a let down. Vegetable soup starter was OK, can't really go wrong with something like that. Christmas dinner had plenty of turkey and veg but was ruined by the worst roast potatoes I've ever eaten, they looked nice but tasted like rubber. Dessert was a gluten free orange sponge cake which was absolutely disgusting. No one on our table ate more than a mouthful and when we told the waitress we weren't impressed she was very apologetic and said it hadn't gone down at all well and hardly anyone had eaten it. One of my colleagues has a nut allergy and asked if the dessert contained nuts. The waitress went away to check and came back and said unfortunately they weren't sure as it was brought in. Nothing was offered as a substitute! Then there's the music, well a DJ can make or break a party and the DJ here was terrible. Yes some people danced, including me but that doesn't mean I enjoyed the music, I just wanted to dance. There were pauses between songs, too much talking over the mike and songs just didn't flow together. We all left early and certainly wouldn't book again. A few days after the party my colleague made a complaint to the manager, she eventually got a response after sending a chasing email. However as she was apparently the only one that complained the manager wasn't interested in her complaint. She was actually complaining on behalf of 8 people so maybe we should have all complained separately. I didn't have time to write and complain with Christmas coming up so maybe other guests were the same. Dismissing a complaint because no one else complained is appalling customer service! This place have no interest in customer satisfaction just making money.

    « Wonderful »

Couldn't of asked for a better day, staff were brilliant from booking to the whole day/ evening I married 25/07/15 there was another wedding going on but staff remained professional and caring even when very busy. Food was good but then I'd chosen that everyone has said it was the best wedding they'd been to everyone had fun the dj kept the dance floor busy n staff kept the room tidy and chatted to guests happily making way for me to enjoy the day. The night staff were fantastic cleaning the breakfast room from my beautiful wedding. The rooms are cosy, big beds, clean, tv is provided with a desk n tea making essentials, hair dryer, ironing board and iron is provided. Clean n big enough bathroom with shower, plenty of towels provided I didn't stay in the honeymoon suite we had a standard double. Breakfast is continental so it's up to you what you chose we had the full English and was pleasantly surprised how nice it was. We can't thank the staff enough for such a wonderful day filled with memories that will last forever

« Excellent New Years Eve stay »

My friend and I booked this hotel for the New Years Eve celebration event in the Kennet and Avon Suite and we also booked a twin room. We checked in at 3pm and were very pleased with the size and standard of our twin room with its lovely en-suite. The NYE event and atmosphere was excellent. Despite being packed out with guests, all of the staff were very efficient and friendly. Our waitress, Maxine, was wonderful. Everything brought to our table was delicious. The DJ played a good mix of music and the dance floor was packed all night. We both slept very well and breakfast was varied, plentiful and delicious again. If you want a good standard of room, professional friendly staff and good food, we would definitely recommend this hotel.

« Good value, friendly staff, fun packed weekends »

No fuss hotel that holds disco & dine packages throughout the year and also many other events Close to M4, stadium and town centre Nice Eve meals and very well laid out breakfast with great coffee. The bedrooms are comfy and include hot drinks making facilities and hairdryer. The website is great to stay updated on the fun weekends at this hotel, the dance floor is shiny and they go all out to dress the tables beautiful where you are served a wonderful 3 course menu before dancing or joining in on the murder mystery eves they also hold

    « Sunday Carvery »

Have visited this place many times before not not for quite a while. The service was good the food was excellent, the beef was to die for! For the price it was certainly value for money. Would recommend every time if this standard was to remain and I see no reason why not.

Yet another brilliant night at the Calcot hotel. There were some problems with the music system microphones but it didnt spoil the atmosphere or enjoyment of the evening. We stayed overnight in a very comfortable room which had everything needed for our stay. With a really tasty breakfast the following morning.

    « Fabulous ! »

Have stayed here before and Stayed again one night with a party of 10. Booked to see the 'Base Tones' who were excellent ... everybody up dancing and singing! Had a great meal which was prompt and hot and from a great choice of menu (unusual for a large group function). All of the staff were efficient and friendly . Breakfast was also excellent and plenty of choice . The price to stay was £64 for a double including breakfast which is excellent and much nicer than trying to get taxis home after a night out. Well done the Calcot.... We will be back again ??

    « Great place! »

Stayed here the night of 27th November. Twin room really nice, beds comfortable, plenty of room to move about. Desk in corner and space for hanging clothes. Shower enclosure large and powerful and hot but bathroom overall quite small (not that you need a lot space I know!!). In the morning had a lovely buffet breakfast and staff on reception and restaurant really nice. I would say the main communal areas especially reception are a bit shabby but the rooms were OK. For the money we paid £62.50 you really can't go wrong. Would stay here again with no worries.

    « Good experience »

I was with a large group having its annual Christmas luncheon. I started with a delicious tomato soup so looked forward to an equally good main course. It was. Beautifully tender turkey, roast potatoes, green beans, carrots, sausage, stuffing and plenty of gravy. Yes, something was missing - Brussels sprouts. On enquiry, I was told that the hotel 'doesn't do sprouts'. This lack was made up for by other splendid factors in the service and atmosphere. The service from all staff was excellent and they were all smartly dressed. What a change from last year at a large hotel in the local town centre!

    « Queen tribute night »

Stopped here on our way to Bath Christmas Markets. The staff were very welcoming , with no exceptions! We had a lovely 3 course meal at the floor show ,very well organised, with a great menu which came out quickly. Special thanks to our waiter Philip , who was most attentive and efficient. My only gripe was that the bed was a bit small but , then again, my husband and I are both over 6 ft. That said, we and the couple we were with, are planning our next trip.

« Annex rooms far better than main hotel »

Have stayed twice in the last fortnight - once in the main hotel, and once in the purpose built annex. No comparison - main hotel room 10 was dated, a bit smelly and had an issue with the shower. Annex was 100% better - good shower, well decorated very pleasant stay. If you have a choice, stay in the annex. Hotel is well located for the M4. Restaurant had good choice of food at a price you would expect for a BW. Many people on business eating on their own, so you don't feel out of place. Very good breakfast selection if a little pricey. Good sized car park.

    2
    « Final let down »

We visited this hotel for a wedding. On the day the food was good and the service was also good. The room was very basic but comfortable, the bed could be bigger as my husbands legs were dangling off the end! My issue is that the following morning at breakfast (which was also good) a staff member, older lady with short grey hair and glasses was extremely rude. My husband and I walked into the breakfast room and greeted a family member. Whilst we were talking with him the staff member rudely interrupted, told us that we must be seated now. Her tone and manner was unacceptable and unfortunately left a lasting impression on our stay. It is a shame as this has dramatically dropped my score. The other staff members were great during our visit which probably highlights her rudeness even more.

« Great service at a good price »

We stopped overnight on Thursday on our way to Hereford. We were greeted by a Receptionist who was warm, welcoming and friendly. As we had previously booked she knew our names and gave us detailed information. We took our cases to our room and went to the restaurant for a meal as they serve until 9.45 pm. Again the servers greeted us warmly, enquiring of our journey. The steaks we had were the best we have tasted, the menu quite extensive, the service impeccable. Breakfast was again top class and the staff so helpful. Quality we have come to expect from a Best Western Hotel.

« motown and old soul night »

Good night out as usual with good music being played and good atmosphere shame the dance floor was so small, the carvery meal was very good but the drinks are expensive shame that not all people attending weren't soul fans.

« Another great Motown night! »

Just returned from another fantastic Motown disco dine at the Calcot Hotel. As usual everything was brilliant. The food, the atmosphere and the DJ all contributed to a fantastic night out. The breakfast in the morning was busy but everything was hot and very tasty. Our party will be back!

    « Fantastic Motown Night »

Keep visiting this hotel for business but this time decided to attend the Motown carvery disco. The food was superb, served hot and fresh and the atmosphere and music superb. Only problem we had was getting on the floor as it was always packed! Next time we will bring group of friends so make the dancefloor bigger!!!

    « Dinner Disco evenings. »

We have visited the Calcot on many occasions because of their Disco Dine evenings. With different music themes and live tribute bands the evenings have had fantastic atmosphere. Meals are always delicious and varied. Staff always have time for everybody and do their best to help in any way they can. Friday evening Disco Dines have a "Happy Hour" between 6.30 and 7.30 when all drinks, by the glass, are half price. Accommodation is excellent, spotless and comfortable and we are looking forward to many more visits.

    « How beautiful »

My husband and myself stayed here 2 nights whilst visiting family in Reading. Check in was excellent, customer service was of a high standard. The room allocated was easy to find and very pleasant on entry. Exceptionally clean throughout. Iron & iron board provided. Tea/Coffee facilities as well as shortbread biscuits. Bathroom was spotless with a lovely shower. Tv ample as well as information about the hotel. The corridors were spotless and smelt fresh and clean. The breakfast was fantastic plenty to choose from and not rushed at all to enjoy. Continental and cooked if wanted. All in all a very pleasant stay and will look forward to staying again on the next visit down from Yorkshire

    « Motown night »

Not worth £25 per head. Food was TERRIBLE. Drinks extortionate prices. £4 bottle of Bud. £2 small glass of draught Coke. DJ unbelievably bad. Only good thing about the night was the company and the cup of tea after the meal.

« Great service and a smashing breakfast »

I booked the hotel as it was close to a function I was attending. The place was neat and tidy with good service from the reception. It was cold in the UK when I arrived so was pleased that the room was nice and warm. Breakfast in the morning was lovely with a good variety of food and lots of it. My only complaint would be the small television in the room but overall very good.

    « Noisy! »

Stayed for a night and realised when I pulled up outside that I'd been here before and moved hotels because the room was full of dead flies. Actually the hotel has had a spruce up and it's clean, warm and comfortable. Staff are lovely too. Two things though the hotel car park is always full of work vans and as a lady travelling alone I felt too intimidated to go to the bar or restaurant for food so went out early and stayed in my room. The other thing is you can hear every movement and noise from the rooms around you...stomping around upstairs...whole conversations on the mobile....the telly next door...sure whoever was in there was deaf so don't expect a good nights sleep unless you've had a skinful and don't care...will not be staying again

    « Lovely breakfast! »

Booked with booking.com and chose this hotel because of location. It was a treat for my mum's 80th and we were using the trip to visit family. Check in was easy, very friendly receptionist. We had a problem but I was pleasantly surprised at how it was rectified (unfortunately after we had left but that was my fault). The manager rang me and was extremely helpful and has made everything right. Breakfast is worth having - one of the nicest and freshest I've had, loads of choice and very hot. When I got home, I realised I had left my kindle, this was posted out to me immediately. Thank you Andrew and staff, we will come back next year and will get to turn left this time!!

« Nice and comfortable with a good vibe. »

Have stayed here a few times, and every time I have stayed everythings been in good shape. Rooms are warm and comfortable. The food is of a very decent standard, and the bar has got a good selection on tap and got some good single malts. Bathrooms are in very good condition as well.

« Friendly Comfortable and great food »

After traveling from Swansea and then sitting on the M4 for two hours between junction 13 and 12 where I had booked my stay here at the calcot I was tired and Hungry. I was greeted my friendly and caring staff who quickly got me settled into my room and directed to the dinning room were I chose a tuna starter and Beef Roast dinner from an excellent choice of dishes. The portions were generous and delicious proper yorkshire pud one of the best roast dinners ive had. The staff were also friendly and efficient and I relaxed completley the room was standard but very clean everything worked and there was lovely coffee and bickies the bed was very comfy and I slept like a baby. A great end to a rough day Thanks All.

    « Seminar stay »

The location was ideal, the room was adequate but the bathroom was a bit on the tight side but if you turn sideways on the throne you can stretch your elbows out! The restaurant could do with some evening mood lighting as it was very bright in there and difficult to wind down.

« Nice hotel lovely staff »

The room was what would be expected from this grade hotel, clean and comfortable but the bed was too narrow 4 6 double is a little small. However apart from this the hotel met all our needs and the staff were brilliant,my husband and I are both disabled so their attitude was important

    « Overnight stay for a 50th »

Nice and clean, a good for a standard road side hotel. Corridors a little noisy with banging fire doors being heard within the room. Wife found hair dryer to be useless and when trying to use her own found out she was under the smoke alarm and set it of for a few seconds. The way to the room was a door off the bar then via a corridor bisecting the kitchen! Warning if they book you a Taxi to go around the corner during the day it will cost £20, try booking it your self as locals said it should not have cost that much. View from room was a back gardens!

« Excellent venue for a presentation dinner »

Our bowls club once again held their annual presentation dinner at this hotel. The service was, as usual, first class and the 3 course meal very good. The room we use is ideal for our party size (50 - 60) and nothing ever seems to be too much trouble for the friendly staff.

    « Very good hotel »

Good hotel, very friendly. Having a bar. Breakfast is lovely with perfect sausages. Close to London and only 10 minutes to the city centre of Reading. Rooms and bath are good. Sleep here for one night.

« A great weekend at this Hotel »

Had two nights at this Hotel. The Hotel is very clean and well looked after, with a good amount of parking places. All our group found the beds to be very comfortable. The staff are very friendly and helpful, making our stay a good experience, this was across the board from reception to bar staff.

« Comfortable, though pricey, but friendly staff »

This hotel has clearly grown over the years and as a result the layout and rooms are rather quirky. That's fine and indeed means this is not a uniform 'identikit' business hotel. It is aimed at business users (it seems) and the room price reflects that. Staff were very friendly and helpful both those on reception and serving breakfast. We did not eat dinner there but had pre-dinner drinks. They were all very pricey

    « Christening party »

We recently had a carvery lunch here for about 70 guests following my daughter's Christening. The event was very well organised and I can thoroughly recommend this venue to anyone thinking of having a similar celebration. The room was laid out beautifully for us and nothing was too much trouble. The food was great and staff were extremely attentive. The hotel is also easy to find and has plenty of parking. I would not hesitate to use them again.

    « Good overnight stay »

Good location with excellent parking, friendly and helpful staff, always eager to help. 10-15 minutes (well lit) walk from the Reading coach station (in fact just a bus stop at Sainsbury's at J12 on M4), so ideal if you are going on a day trip to (for instance) a sporting fixture in London, with a late evening return. A big plus was the restaurant accepting orders up to 2130 on a Sunday night - unexpected but welcome after a long day!

    « Average hotel »

The hotel is located not far from the M4, and within a very short walk of a small retail park. Stayed here for business for a few nights. Reception staff were very welcoming and explained the opening times of the restaurant for dinner and breakfast. Rooms are very comfortable, windows opened, bathroom was top notch with its' recently refurbished shower, very generously sized. Restaurant was very busy at the beginning of the week but had died down by the middle of the week, once the business travellers had moved on. I would say the menu is limited, and expensive for what you get. Breakfasts are help yourself buffet-style, always kept topped up. The waiting staff were not overbearing, but were quick to clear the table. There was on occasion a few minutes wait whilst you were waiting for the Host to take you to a table. All-in-all an average stay, in an average hotel.

    « Lovely place »

Nice hotel, decent rooms, good bar, excellent breakfast (sausages are the best) and it serves John Smiths. Red kites floating past the hotel make my stay more enjoyable and a bus stop 100 yards up road for regular trips into Reading.
