Needed time away to relax and de-stress and the Olde Barn Hotel was just brilliant. The staff accommodated our needs and gave us advice especially with a migraine sufferer. The room was lovely and spacious. The spa facilities was great for us. They also do massages and other wellbeing activities such has nail pedicure I was gutted has we didnt know about it until we got there and it was complety booked so didnt get a chance to use this service. Otherwise had a great time.

"No frills, no finesse, poor service."

tebb, Notts 04/05/2022

We visited the Olde Barn, on a buyagift experience and after reading the mixed reviews, we went with an open mind. We arrived earlier than planned, as we were unable to check in, we made our way to the bar, which was warm, and welcoming. The bar staff were friendly and pleasant. We checked in at 3pm and that is when the pleasantries stopped! We found the receptionist to be unfriendly, abrupt, surly and completely disinterested in her guests. Not even the hint of a smile. With our bags, we following the instructions given to us and we eventually found our room, which was pleasant with views overlooking fields and open countryside. The room was well situated, clean, airy, with a king size bed, with both a bath and separate shower. Tea & coffee making facilities were available and a large flat screen TV on the wall. The only problem was there was no remote to work the TV. After an extensive search, in drawers, wardrobe, under the bed, in the bed and in every orifice, it wasn't to be found. We duly reported the missing remote to reception, where the customer services experience continued in the same vain as our check in experience. We were advised that the remote must be there and there's nothing reception can do at this time. No apologies, no reassurances, no help whatsoever! Undeterred, we decided to use the pool and spa facilities and enjoyed a swim and steam. No issues there at all. Good sized pool, not too busy and adequate changing facilities. We had booked an evening meal in the dining room, which we were really looking forward to. Menu A, was the menu available (rotation of 4menus), which offered a small selection of 3 courses. We were met by Liz, who had the same training and customer service skills as our receptionist. We were unceremoniously plonked in the middle of the ‘dining room' which resembled an old barn, with dark beams, dark furniture and a dark carpet. The tables had no table cloths and were sticky to touch. Paper napkins adorned the table with a cold bread roll and the condiments. Fine dining it was not. Once seated Liz plonked the menus on the table and took our drinks order. Our drinks were served very quickly by another staff member who told us she was ‘knackered' and could not wait to end her shift. Within minutes another staff member, who didn't have a name badge on, came to take our order. She was pleasant and smiled and we later found out, after chatting to her, she was from Portugal. Our starters arrived instantly and we tucked in. As soon as we had finished the starter the pots were cleared, again with no finesse and the mains arrived. The food was OK but that was it. Salmon served with swede was a novelty but it was edible. We had both courses within 1/2 an hour and felt very rushed. The experience was not pleasurable. Watching the staff clearing up, clock watching, huffing & puffing was quite off-putting. There was clearly a ‘get em in, get em out' attitude and absolutely no finesse at all. Once the table was cleared and with no options of a tea or coffee, we just sat there waiting. Bet, who I think was in charge, as she was wearing a trouser suit, joined Liz setting tables up for breakfast, whilst checking her clip board, watching the clock and spraying tables. As we had clearly out stayed our welcome, we made our way to the bar, which was directly adjacent to the dining hall. As we were leaving Bet got a little animated telling us and the entire dining room that we were ‘only bed & breakfast' and had not paid. We very graciously pointed out that we had checked in with our room details and assumed it would be charged to our room, as no one had explained to us any different and nobody had presented the bill or indeed asked us if we were finished. We were told that was not the case and we're not allowed to leave until we paid, which of course we duly did, as doing a runner was definitely not on our agenda! We accept a ‘no frills' dining experience but it could have been a much more pleasurable experience if the staff had basic customer service experience, a smile and looked like they wanted to be there. It wasn't and they didn't. After a good nights sleep, we endured breakfast, which was similar to dinner, same sticky tables, same poor customer services, same dining experience, limited choice, cold coffee, served from a flask and very average food. It really is such a shame that the potential of this hotel is not maximised, it really could be a little gem, with a bit of investment, a bit of love, some clever marketing and the right people with the right attitude working there. Until then we would not be in a hurry to return and would not recommend it.

David H, General Manager at The Olde Barn Hotel, responded to this review
Thank you for your detailed review of your stay with us. I am very sorry that your time with us did not meet your expectations and very sorry that you did not receive the typical high level of customer service we have feedback on. We are obviously disappointed that you do not intend to return to us and can not recommend us and I do hope that your next hotel stay is a successful one.

"on a deal and good value"

4
julian H, Wymondham, United Kingdom 02/05/2022

We had a deal but overall good value The room was very adequate and clean but no aspect. The bath towel heater did not work but all else was fine in the room. The free G and T was good and the main meal a little limited but the breakfast was first rate , once they found some more bowls and spoons. I had an extra glass of wine at table but trying to pay for this at checkout made me wonder why I bothered but I was being honest . Car parking was a little difficult and it is very easy to get lost inside and surprisingly close to the A1

David H, General Manager at The Olde Barn Hotel, responded to this review
Thank your for taking the time to review us and we appreciate your kind feedback.

"Basic hotel, not very good value for money"

2
User 01/05/2022

Considering the price we paid for the room, the room was very basic. We had a lovely wedding and the staff were lovely but the room was very basic for the price we paid. Not enough pillows - blankets for 3/4 people and only 1 lamp and no bedside tables

David H, General Manager at The Olde Barn Hotel, responded to this review
Thank you for your review and I am sorry that the room did not meet your expectations. All beds have a quilt, 2 pillows per bed and we also have additional blankets in the wardrobe. We would have happily supplied more had we been asked at the time. I will need to speak to my team with regards bedside tables as all rooms should certainly have them and thank you for bringing this to my attention. I am delighted that the wedding was lovely and we appreciate your feedback.

"Family Get Together"

4
Jacky F, Doncaster, United Kingdom 01/05/2022

Needed an hotel with a function room, swimming pool for the children and that took dogs for a reunion of a family of 19. The hotel itself is 3 star and will soon require a refurbishment. However the food was really good and our thanks go to the chef(s) The hotel staff were second to none! Our special thanks go to Didi, the deputy general manager, who was so helpful and a genuinely nice person. Nothing fazed her. Down side, the Wi-Fi is useless but we didn't go there to use the internet, and during the our visit there was an invasion of mosquitoes (nothing the hotel could do about that), and the water pressure was low at times (also nothing the hotel can rectify). There Was a wedding during our stay which effect sleep quality for some members of our party The staff definitely make this hotel.

David H, General Manager at The Olde Barn Hotel, responded to this review
We appreciate your kind feedback and I am delighted that your stay was an enjoyable one. We are hopeful that Grantham will get fibre soon as this will ensure a far better internet which is very poor currently though no fault of the Hotel. I will pass on your kind comments to Didi and the team.

a pleasant stay, with good service and decent food, prices were reasonable, internet did struggle the first day, but second day was fine. would stay again. Location ok, but was not a lot in the immediate area

"Okay stay but terrible food."

2
Lauren_Gilbert98, Portsmouth, United Kingdom 29/04/2022

Terrible food (with gone off guacamole). No iron/ironing board in room No hair dryer Bright blue light from thermostat Waited one hour for room service Overall just not worth the money whatsoever. Had to ask for an ironing board and iron, the receptionist gave me a key to another room in order to iron. Ordered room service on two evenings. First meal wasn't great but thought it was just my choice. Ordered again the second night and it took an hour to arrive and the meal was pretty terrible. The avocado guacamole with the nachos was also gone off. Breakfast was good but the tables are sticky. Cleaning of the room was brilliant, always had fresh towels so if you're just looking for a room to sleep in then go here.

"Wouldn't take much to make it really nice"

3
Rebecca R, Southampton 28/04/2022

We stayed here as a Virgin Experience package which included afternoon tea. Weirdly, it was served in the bar surrounded by people drinking beer and watching the horse racing, which wasn't really what I'd pictured. The food was fine, however. I was quite excited when we walked into the room to find a four poster bed until we realised that one of the posts blocked the view of the TV. Had hotel management tried staying in this format of room to check the guest experience, they would quickly have realised this. There was a sign in the bathroom explaining how to use the shower but with a caveat that these instructions don't apply to all the rooms! Surely you would put a sign appropriate to the room? These two things, although relatively small, demonstrate a lack of attention to detail. We enjoyed the pool, jacuzzi and steam room. They had run out of towels though so asked us to go get towels from our room and told us we could ask housekeeping for fresh ones. I asked if we could just get towels from reception (much closer) but was told that was not possible. Breakfast was probably the best part of the stay. Plenty of choice and lovely fresh croissants. We didn't get chance to explore the village but I can recommend popping to the alpaca farm which is only a 10 minute drive away. Overall the stay was fine but there were just a few niggly things that could so easily have been fixed with a bit more thought. I'd have been disappointed had we paid full price.

"Very happy "

5
User 28/04/2022

Having read some of the mixed reviews we didn't quite know what to expect but all our concerns were unfounded. We had a very nicely furnished spacious room with a lovely modern bathroom with good quality towels as was the bed linen. They even replaced the light bulbs when requested to make the room brighter! Nothing was too much trouble for any of the pleasant staff. Both breakfast and the evening meals were fine.would love to return and will definitely recommend.

"good value hotel catering for a large party"

5
janmaypa, Yorkshire, United Kingdom 27/04/2022

We stayed for two nights as part of a party of fifty plus guest on a car club outing The hotel offers a large car park Ideal for the parking of prized possession We were welcomed in reception by a friendly and helpful staff The room was clean and very comfortable Our small dog was made to feel at home being offered biscuits by the staff as the party enjoyed a reception in the lounge of coffee and excellent cake I particularly enjoyed the pool ( which I visited several times over the weekend) We ate as a party on both evenings in the banquet suite where the set menu offed an appetising selection on both evenings Food was served efficiently by the helpful and engaging team Breakfast was served on both morning with both hot and cold food being offered by the buffet table the staff were friendly and helpful as experienced throughout our stay To summarize I will use the hotel again when I am in the area and can absolutely recommend the hotel for a party booking offering terrific value not to mention service with a smile

"Fell below expectations"

2
charl0ttekyte, Wakefield, United Kingdom 25/04/2022

Tv in our room didn't work and had no help from staff to fix this. Bed was old or overused as springs were flat and mattress uncomfortable. Noisy with other guests walking past or in next rooms, could hear every word said. Lack of toiletries, hole in wall and old fashioned furniture. Tables at breakfast were sticky, spiders in corner where we sat and breakfast room so overcrowded staff had to sit guests in bar area.

David H, General Manager at The Olde Barn Hotel, responded to this review
Thank you for taking the time to review us. I am very sorry that your stay fell below your expectations, we will address the points you have made and I do hope that you will consider staying with us once again and give us the opportunity of restoring your faith in us.

"More like Faulty Towers"

User 22/04/2022

Stayed here for 1 night - never again - the food was ineable - dinner was very small portions - vegitables were overcooked and inedible. meat was mostly fat. Breaftas was overcooked and inedible.. glasses were dirty Room was large, but tap was hanging off - plug was broken - shower tiles were peeling up and sharp underfoot. Cleaners stood outside our room early in the morning to have a lonmg and loud chat - even though we had a do not disturb notice on the door. When i complaineed to reception - i just got told they would pass the information on... would not recomend

David H, General Manager at The Olde Barn Hotel, responded to this review
It is disappointing to read your feedback especially in view that the stay was under £65 for a superior bedroom, dinner, breakfast and a gin & tonic on arrival which we think is excellent value. We serve over 700 dinners and 1,200 breakfasts weekly and if our meals were as described we would not be rated so highly on this site. We fortunately meet the majority of our guests needs and meet their approval and I am very sorry that we did not meet yours. I am at a loss to explain how you experienced so many issues, it appears with every aspect of the hotel and have not been able to offer one positive comment which is very disappointing. Without commenting on all your negative feedback, it is very clear that the hotel did not suit your requirements or meet your expectations in any aspect. I do hope that your next stay in a hotel is more to your liking.

C5950ZSianr, Birmingham, United Kingdom 16/04/2022

We stayed at the Olde Barn for a couple of nights and found it to be very clean, comfortable with the food very good. The staff make this place. Nothing is too much trouble and, rather than single out any members of staff, our thanks go to each and every one of them. We'll certainly be back

David H, General Manager at The Olde Barn Hotel, responded to this review
Thank you your comments are really appreciated and my team will be delighted that their efforts have been recognised. We strive to work as a team and deliver great service and it is lovely to hear when we have done that. "A comfortable value for money accommodation"

5
livelifetothefull22, Derby, United Kingdom 15/04/2022

Stayed 2 nights with a friend, as a base to visit surrounding areas. Lovely to have a bar area selling good bar meals, a great choice of food in the restaurant and also a lounge area to sit and read a book. The rooms were very clean and comfortable with tea/coffee facilities, hairdryers, trouser press, iron and board and a safe. Plenty of storage for clothes. Room cleaned daily (not all hotels are doing this yet) and we had a nice quiet room. Didn't use pool facilities so can't pass comment.

David H, General Manager at The Olde Barn Hotel, responded to this review
I am pleased that you enjoyed your stay with us and that our menu and dishes served were so well received. We hope to see you again soon and perhaps you will take the opportunity to enjoy our leisure facilities too.

"Great value with helpful staff"

5
Q7880BXjuliec, Telford, United Kingdom 15/04/2022

Lovely disabled room with bathroom containing a walk in shower and a bath which is rare. The bathroom also boasts a double sink unit and plenty of space. A toilet raise, however would have been a helpful addition. A tasty breakfast with a more than adequate selection. The leisure facilities are open from 7am until after 8pm and contain a large swimming pool with a jacuzzi, sauna and steam room. They are a wonderful addition to the great value and impressive room we had at this hotel.

David H, General Manager at The Olde Barn Hotel, responded to this review
I am pleased that our disabled room met your expectations and we appreciate your suggestion which we will look into. I am delighted that you were impressed with us and hope to see you again soon.

sherralea, Kessingland, United Kingdom 14/04/2022

Went for a mini break with husband's birthday. Purchased a wowcher deal for 2 people , 2 nights to include breakfast both mornings and 3 course meal. Inclusive use of spa facilities. Very good value for money We had a very enjoyable stay, rooms were spacious and clean although quite hot during the night. Meals were lovely, staff friendly and spa a treat. The only thing I would suggest is maybe a fan for rooms at night as it was hot. We will visit again.

Our granddaughter had qualified for showjumping in the final at the Arena UK Lincolnshire and we wanted to go and support her. We had to find accommodation that would be dog friendly for our lack Labrador. The Olde Barn Grantham fitted the bill. They had a great deal on dinner bed and breakfast and were less than 10 minutes away from the show ground. Hanna on reception gave us a warm welcome and our bedroom and bathroom were clean and very spacious. The restaurant staff were also friendly and attentive with Jamie the restaurant manager looking after us very well, as indeed we saw her doing the same for all the customers. If we are back in the area again we would have no reservations about staying at the Olde Barn again.

David H, General Manager at The Olde Barn Hotel, responded to this review
I am delighted that your stay with us was an enjoyable one and ideal for your trip to watch your daughter at the Lincolnshire Arena. We are very dog friendly and I hope your labrador enjoyed it too :-) It is great that you had such good value and we hope to see you once again in the future. I will certainly pass on your kind comments to Jamie.

"Not a bad option"

Lady35, Essex 06/04/2022

Warm welcome. Room big, bathroom very modern & clean. Restaurant busy so ate in bar. Food was good, good choice. However only after we got into bed did we realize the 2 single divans pushed together had 3 mattress toppers on & the right side springs were gone making a low dip- a broken bed. We didn't sleep well. There was also a green light - poss exit light, that illuminated the room all night. Breakfast was good- couldn't fault it. Spoke to lady on reception upon check out about bed & she said we shldve flagged it the night before& poss been moved. I see the point- but we had unpacked & were exhausted.. i think its more not putting guests in a room where the bed is clearly knackered & you try to cover it with 3 mattress toppers! We would return but wld do full inspection before unpacking! Staff were friendly & location perfect for Arena UK

David H, General Manager at The Olde Barn Hotel, responded to this review
Thank you for your review and we appreciate you taking the time to review us. We are in the process of replacing beds and I will certainly ask my Head Housekeeper to ensure the bed on the next delivery replaces this bed as this is certainly not a good standard and I am sorry that your bed was not comfortable during your stay. We do hope to welcome you back in the future.

Excellent hotel set in a rural area. Bedroom and en-suite excellent Wifi, swimming area good. Breakfast was hot with plenty of choice. Evening meal was also served hot and excellent choice. Yes we would stay again and can recommend it, very good value for money.

"It certainly is a barn of a place."

4
Bob L, Banbury, United Kingdom 31/03/2022

This Travel Zoo offering was a much larger hotel than we expected and certainly catered for numbers as we found at breakfast time. The staff were kept on their toes trying to keep up with orders. Our two dining in dinners there were somewhat less frenzied affair and the three course meal at a fixed price was certainly excellent value for money. there were sufficient choices with each course to suit most people and a reasonable selection of wine. We found it strange to pay for our dinner drinks each night rather than put them on the bill at the end of our stay. We did have two rounds of gin and tonics included in our three night deal and it also included a two course dinner on the first night. The hotel rooms were reached along long corridors on three levels but the lift was out of action for some time so we had to carry luggage upstairs instead. The rooms were generous and well equipped with wi fi, hairdryer, iron and ironing board plus a trouser press. Nice to have a separate shower in the bathroom rather than having to rely on one over the bath. Front of staff extremely helpful and well prepared to receive guests.

Only ate it the restaurant, family were staying. Phoned in the afternoon to book a table for 6.30 that evening. When we arrived there's was no table booking so they found us a table. Service was slow and had to ask to order. Food was on the table in 5 mins which leads me to think it was sitting under lights. Fish was tasteless apparently. I had vegetable tagine which comprised of 6 pieces of roasted veg and a serving of cous cous. This was the only vegetarian option. It was so spicy hot I could hardly eat it. The other with me dined on the smoked haddock with a dill sauce. On the plate some carrots and broccoli . Also ordered 3 teas and had to ask twice for the third tea as only 2 were brought to the table. We had no starters and no desserts. And it cost. £67.00.! So I cam home to eat as I was hungry. Only 2 dessert options which didn't suit me. I won't eat there again very didssappointed.

David H, General Manager at The Olde Barn Hotel, responded to this review
The price of our main course only is £14.95 as detailed on the menu and I am not sure why you were charged £67, however if this issue had been raised at the time we would have certainly looked into this and resolved the matter for you. All meals are plated prior to them being served but all are meals are prepared in advance and stored on our kitchen hot plate for speed of service. The team are readily available and I am sorry you had to ask for your order to be taken and for the additional tea you ordered. Clearly they did not offer the typical service we do and I am very sorry that your meal experience with us was not a good one. We only have one vegetarian option alongside 3 other main courses so 25% of our menu is vegetarian however guests can also order from the options available in the bar too and I am sorry that this was not offered to you. I am sorry that the dish you ordered was too hot and it is disappointing to read that the smoked fish was tasteless especially as this is ordered in by ourselves smoked. Our menu does change daily and I do hope that you would consider dining with us again to give us the opportunity to restore your faith in us. We appreciate your feedback and I will certainly pass on your comments to our Head Chef and food and beverage team to investigate and review their procedures.

Long dining table was prepared for us so we could all eat together Menu was limited but food was hot and tasty Staff were amazing, friendly and obliging Last minute spa treatments for 6 people were accommodated admirably.

Room was very good and as my husband is disabled they ensured we had a walk in shower. All the facilities are good and the staff were all very helpfull. Breakfast was OK - plates should have been warm, toaster needs updating but plenty of food was available. We had dinner in the dining room one night which was fine though limited and ate in the bar the following evening which was fine. Staff were all very helpful and friendly.

My wife has stayed here before and really enjoyed it. This was a mid week getaway 1 night. I arrived just after 3 booked in reception pleasant. Went to room, this was a basic room quite small and was all equipped for disabled visitors(I am not) as it was small standard double bed but only room for one bedside cabinet. The decor was quite drab and the bathroom just didn't smell fresh. We used the spa facilities then after decided to eat in the bar. From here things went down hill.waited half a hour and after complaining got my starter (soup). Then waited and waited again a good twenty minutes to half an hour. Asking the staff where was our main course (oh I'll go and check or would you like a refund) to which I replied I would like my meal as I'd travelled straight from work. We waited a bit longer then gave up. There was no manager and the supervisors response was poor. Excuses as to they were short staffed and would I like to go into the restaurant didn't help as I didnt want to sit for another HR. We were refunded for our meal the drove into Grantham to find something to eat. By this time it was gone 9pm. At no point did anyone say there would be a delay due to staff shortage, we could have planned earlier. As for for a relaxing mid week break total disaster

"Great hard working staff except for one."

Enjoyed our stay here, our room was a bit dated and could do with some updating though. The majority of the staff were kind and attentive, evening meal was tasty and well served. The breakfast in the morning was nice, with a range of options. I noticed staff seemed a bit rushed and was working at their capacity. This definitely wasn't helped by an older lady barking orders at the other staff and being frankly rude and unprofessional, especially when in front of me and other guests. I think at one point one of the younger girls looked close to tears with the way she spoke to her. Absolutely disgusting. Just a shame when we really loved our stay, all it took was one member of staff to drag it down, made us feel like we were a burden on the waiting staff when they were already running round like crazy on her orders.

"Enjoyable meet up with friends."

The hotel overall was comfortable and quiet. Some staff were more pleasant than others and went out of their way to help. Breakfast , particularly was very good with quality produce. Dining room experience not the best from an aesthetic point of view .

"2 day break"

User 17/03/2022

Had a lovely 2 day break. We have stayed here many times but not for the last 2 years because of Covid. We stayed in a superior room which was in excellent condition and very clean. We always use the swimming pool and hot tub. The restaurant meal was average but the burger meal in the bar on the second night was fantastic.Breakfast has improved since our last stay and really enjoyed it. We have always found the staff polite and helpful. Jane at breakfast was very helpful with a pleasant attitude made our stay all the better.

"Needs upgrade and TLC"

User 14/03/2022

As others have said the hotel needs tidying and upgrade. The evening menu choice not good. Room very outdated leisure facilities were OK and breakfast OK but no option vege sausages. Evening meal very poor

David H, General Manager at The Olde Barn Hotel, responded to this review
Thank you for your review. We cater for up to 100 diners each evening and as such have a daily reduced table d'hote menu which changes daily to ensure we are able to serve all the diners whilst offering a good selection of dishes. All our dinner inclusive guests can dine in the restaurant or chose from the more extensive bar menu in our gravity bar. Our breakfast selection offers every dish you would expect at breakfast and it is disappointing that you have rated this is ok. We have 103 bedrooms and there are a small number that need updating which was obviously delayed during 2020 and 2021 due to the COVID epidemic. We do however clean and maintain our rooms to a high standard and we are aware that some rooms require updating. Sadly the financial impact on hospitality has been devastating and sadly some hotels have closed as a result but it does mean that our resources for up dating are sadly a bit limited currently. We appreciate your feedback.

"Murder mystery stay"

cathgilb68, Kettering, United Kingdom 13/03/2022

Event good . Room clean and good . Good value for money on the deal . Unfortunately main course of meal provided poor as carrots had that horrible burnt smell and taste ( like when you steam veg and the bottom of the pan burns when water burns dry ) . Waitress acknowledged and did do her best to put right .

David H, General Manager at The Olde Barn Hotel, responded to this review
Thank you for your review and I am pleased that you enjoyed our murder mystery event and your stay with us. I am sorry that the kitchen experienced issues with the carrots for the event and that on service they tasted so poor. Obviously something went wrong during preparation and we will certainly ensure that this does not happen again. I am pleased that the waitress on the night did her best to rectify the situation. We do hope that you would consider another event with us in the future.

The hotel is just what you want for an overnight get away and relax. The health suite is fabulous with a pool, sauna ,steam room and jacuzzi. The room was very spacious. Extremely large bed which was comfortable enough, large tv, bathroom was lovely with rainfall shower. Tea and coffee making facilities with a couple of very tasty biscuits. We had a few snags with staff disorganisation, very small portion on the dinner side, but breakfast makes up for it. Wouldn't let the little niggles stop me from going again.

David H, General Manager at The Olde Barn Hotel, responded to this review
Thank you for your kind review and I am delighted that your stay with us was an enjoyable one and that the few snags did not impact your stay. I am pleased to read that you would consider staying with us again and we look forward to welcoming you back in the future.

We stayed at the Olde Barn on a two night B@B Travelzoo deal which also included dinner on the first night. We really enjoyed our stay and found all the staff to be really friendly and helpful. The breakfast buffet was excellent which set us up nicely for the day and we also enjoyed our evening meal. The complimentary Health Club facilities were also well equipped. Overall a lovely break thankfully matched by the weather! On the second night we took a short walk to eat at the Thorold pub in Marston which is well worth a visit.

David H, General Manager at The Olde Barn Hotel, responded to this review
Thank you for taking the time to review us and for you 5* review. I am delighted that your stay was an enjoyable one and we hope to see you again in the not too distant future.

I booked for a murder mystery event online then called, to upgrade to include a jacuzzi and paid the extra cost. We looked forward to the event for weeks and booked the day off work to get there early so that we could make use of the jacuzzi before the evening event. When we got there we found that there was no jacuzzi. We spoke to reception who told us that there were only 3 rooms with jacuzzi and that they had already been taken. We asked to speak to the manager and were told the manager was not available and that there was no point as they couldn't do anything. The room was fair but nothing special. An executive room with a 4 poster bed that blocked the television screen. The hot tap came off whilst I was in the bath and my body was scolded as I could not turn it off or get out of the bath without burning myself. When I told reception but they were uninterested and did not offer first aid for the burns. The murder mystery event was amazing, the evening meal was awful, breakfast was fair. I will never return and advise you to stay elsewhere.

Requested top fl large bed and bath got that but also got a buzzing noise continually from outside and the smallest tv you could buy. Furniture was very tired and stained even though it was supposed to be a superior room.

David H, General Manager at The Olde Barn Hotel, responded to this review
I am sorry that there was a noise that disturbed you and we will certainly investigate this further. Some of our rooms have slightly older furniture however all our rooms are cleaned to a high standard and the facilities in all our superior rooms are the same. We do hope that you would consider staying with us once again in the future.

User 08/03/2022

Hotel, room and pool Good, staff friendly and helpful. For the price we paid on travel zoo deal did'nt expect haute cuisine but also did'nt expect a trip down memory lane to school dinner in the 60's. Needs to definately improve even if it means charging a little more.

David H, General Manager at The Olde Barn Hotel, responded to this review
I am sorry that the menu was not to your liking, we change the restaurant menu on a monthly basis and put on dished that our guests like and I am sorry that it was not to your liking. We do serve traditional meals in the restaurant which is what our guests tell us they prefer but anyone on a travel zoo deal can also chose from the bar menu which has many additional meal options. I am pleased that you felt it was good value and we hope to see you again soon.

"Nice Stay - Shame About The Receptionist!!!!"

4
Lynneth44, Immingham, United Kingdom 08/03/2022

When we arrived, just before 6 pm, we were met with a very curt Receptionist, who asked us to fill in the obligatory form and asked if we had booked dinner. We said we hadn't but the paperwork stated we could book a table as we booked into the hotel. She said, 'We don't have any tables tonight, as we have a bus party in, but you can have your dinner free tomorrow night'. We explained that our dinner was part of the package and we were only staying one night. She repeated, 'We don't have any tables in the restaurant tonight'. After staying that we had complied with their paperwork, she said, 'you can eat in the bar, to the same value'. We said we were not happy, so she went to speak to the restaurant staff, who allegedly said if we went in straight away, they would serve us. So that is what we accepted. When we went to the restaurant, it was completely empty, and only 3 other couples came in during the next hour After such an awful start, the service in the restaurant was first class. The staff were attentive, efficient and very friendly. Jamie and Lexi were wonderful. The meal was acceptable - not the best, but certainly not the worst I have ever had We went back to the room, which was barely warm. The radiator was badly in need of bleeding. I went to see the same curt Receptionist, who said she would send the Duty Manager. When she arrived, it was Jamie, who could not do enough for us, but stated that the maintenence people had gone home, but offered a small heater. The room was large, clean and comfortable, and the huge bathroom was lovely Breakfast was good, but by 8.45 am, they had run out of fresh fruit Guess who was serving in the restaurant? Yes, Jamie!! She should be appointed Customer Services Manager and Trainer, and she needs to start with the Receptionist. Jamie, you are amazing

David H, General Manager at The Olde Barn Hotel, responded to this review
Thank you for your review and I am pleased that your stay with us was an enjoyable one. I am sorry that the receptionist was not helpful but delighted to read that a number of the team more than made up for this with the service they gave you. I do hope that you would consider staying with us once again.

So many things wrong with this hotel fitness center closed no heating in the rooms as they had run out of gas for 2days glad I was only there for one day I was there the second day so the cold had rely set into the hotel rooms the furniture was dated we had a superior room umm not rely. Carpets coming up on transfer from stairs to landing restaurant freezing cold when having night time meal food ok if you want a special day don't stay here in my opinion truck stop at best

David H, General Manager at The Olde Barn Hotel, responded to this review
Sadly you stayed with us when we had issues with our mains gas that was out of the Hotels control. We are in a rural location and run on LPG, our supplier who re-fills our gas automatically failed to do so. This obviously caused many issues resulting in the Hotel having to close for 2 days following your stay until we received supply. This meant we had no heating, no hot water, no cooking facilities or way of heating the pool in the Health Spa and the team worked very hard in an exceptionally challenging situation. A few of our rooms have older wooden furniture but as can be seen on our reviews are rooms are cleaned and maintained to a high standard. Sadly carpets can lift at anytime due to the volume of guests we have staying with us but they are repaired as soon as identified. We really appreciated customers understanding as we were fully booked when we ran out of gas and I am very sorry that this impacted your stay.

"Very upset with our stay"

tonyU675PU, Hebden Bridge, United Kingdom 28/02/2022

Very disappointed as we booked the hotel for a birthday treat after 2 years of lock down . Only to find out that this was not available due to no gas we complained to the receptionist who said it was out of her hands and the hotel wasn't offering compensation for this. The first night we went to the restaurant and was served cold food. The helpful staff replaced but the food was still not hot, the explication for this was that they had to walk far and maybe the food was cooling down and that they could microwave it! For this we were offered a discount on the food. The second morning there was no hot breakfast offered. Our overall experience was extremely poor we appreciate that having no gas was out of the hotels hands but some form of compensation should of been offered as the main reason to go was a treat we could of easily gone to a cheaper hotel for the same service .

David H, General Manager at The Olde Barn Hotel, responded to this review
Thank you for your review and I am very sorry that your stay was at a time the hotel lost gas supply due to delivery issues with our LPG gas as sadly we do not have mains gas supply. As I am sure you appreciate the team were in an unknown situation and did the best they could in a very difficult situation. We had to use are function kitchen as a result and this is sadly some distance away from the restaurant and I am sorry that your meal was not as warm as it should have been as a result. The team should have certainly offered compensation as a result of the problems and should you wish to book again we would happily offer discount of any future stay.

Hotel staff are very unprofessional in dealing with guesses, breakfast very poor no control of the help yourself to the hot buffet, waiting 10 minutes for sausage and beans. No details of have you switch the tv on because the remote hand set doesn't work, you have to use the remote switch on the back of the TV set.

David H, General Manager at The Olde Barn Hotel, responded to this review
Thank you for your review and I am very sorry that due to high breakfast volumes that their was a delay getting some hot items to the breakfast buffet. The hotel checks remote controls before rooms are let and I am sorry that the battery had gone when you were in the room. There is a manual option but reception do have spare universal tv controllers and batteries and I am very sorry that you were inconvenienced. I am pleased that you have rated many aspects of your stay above average and hope that we will have the opportunity to restore your faith in us in the future.

Had a really great stay at Olde Farm Barn. Check in was very easy, room had everything you needed. Spa area consisted off pool, jacuzzi, steam room and sauna. The only thing I would say is to have more seating around the pool area so you could sit and relax. Had amazing 3 course meal in the evening and tasty breakfast in the morning. Slept really well and ended stay with relaxing massage. All staff were pleasant and attentive especially Jane. Thank you for a lovely stay

Lovely venue, very clean and excellent valued food. A little remote but area nice and quiet . Interbnet acces very poor, which is the main downside of the saty. Good pool, very large. Good gym, but we didnt use it. Staff very helpful

Came up from Wolverhampton and stayed for 2 days, had a breakfast and one meal deal included. Lovely clean hotel, restaurant staff were really attentive, especially Jane, who my opinion went over and above. She explained the murder mystery weekends and we will definitely be coming back to experience those due to her recommendations, her level of professional service was second to none.

We had a brilliant deal with Travel zoo and a wonderful superior quiet room in the eaves with my two children sharing with us. The room was massive and I'm such a light sleeper in such a big hotel I didn't hear a thing. All the staff were very friendly. The pool was warm and steam room was hot enough to get my skin clear. The only negative would be the cleanliness in the pool changing rooms the floor was a little dirty and slippery. The breakfast could have had some chocolate muffins as my kids needed a little chocolate for a holiday breakfast treat. The dinner in the restaurant was very nice and extremely fast service and for my young children just what we needed after a long day. The room also had all the things you needed with lots of biscuits too!!

Patricia P, Swadlincote, United Kingdom 16/02/2022

Our initial welcome was disappointing, we were a little early and happy to wait in the bar for our room to be ready Did not appreciate the fact that we had to suggest this to a receptionist who needs some training in customer welcoming skills Absolutely not happy at the 3 choice menu at the evening meal, both of the first courses tasted of vinegar and the chocolate cheesecake desert tasted of bitter cheese and the table was not set for an evening meal.....We had to ask for a wine list, when chosen it came delivered by a waitress who said I know nothing about wine and didn't bring glasses and when we requested them she brought two un-matching and one of which was lipstick stained and my husband had to ask for a replacement before he opened and poured our wine! We absolutely ate in a village pub on our second day! We were looking forward to using the leisure as the pictures advertised showed a lovely pool with relaxing loungers which I was looking fwd to using to read in between taking a dip and steam etc.....All loungers removed due to COVID!!! Seriously, how long does it take to spritz clean a lounger Also, No Room Service Again due to COVID!! And the supposedly 'Superior Room' was overlooking the rubbish collection point and the van park so a great wake up call at 7am from noisy drivers! This is a joke We have been to several mini breaks now where all these things have been put right to an exceptionally high standard and there really is no excuse now not to get staff trained to get the service back to normal It's a shame that many UK places haven't taken the chance to make our country shine!

David H, General Manager at The Olde Barn Hotel, responded to this review
We have over 700 guests visiting us weekly and serve over 1,000 dinners. As you can see from the many recent reviews on here to many we have "shined" and I am sorry that this was not your own personal perspective of any aspect of the hotel which is very disappointing. Although we are trying to keep some COVID systems in place there are chairs around the pool and room service is available and advertised on our app. Although some rooms face our bin area they are located as far away from the Hotel as possible. Sadly we are unable to offer guaranteed stunning views from any rooms as are car park surrounds the whole hotel but beyond this is farm land. We really appreciate your feedback and I am sorry that your stay with us did not meet your expectations.

another great stay at the Olde barn , room clean and bed very comfy, staff freindly and accomodating, if I had to give this a downer it would be the menu , please offer more choice and change the menu regularly, as our stay was on valentines day it would of been nice to have a little decoration up

User 15/02/2022

This was quite a large hotel, lots of people milling about all the time. It definitely gave the impression that the gym and pool were central to guests' visits. However, the changing rooms were not in use, and for lots of guests it was quite a long walk to and from the leisure centre. A receptionist told us that robes would be provided for guests coming out of the pool, in order to them shower back in our rooms. However, when we asked in the leisure centre, we were advised that they were not supplied. Our room itself was clean and functional. The decor was quite bland though. The bar area and restaurant were as expected. Staff were friendly and helpful. We would stay again, although for the Wowcher discount price that we paid. It would not be worth the full price. For couples or families wanting a short break to eat, drink, and use the leisure activities, I would recommend the Olde Barn. However, if you were looking for a pleasant location in which to take a stroll after your meal, there is nowhere to safely walk outside the grounds.

David H, General Manager at The Olde Barn Hotel, responded to this review
Thank you for your feedback and I am pleased that you enjoyed your stay with us. I am sorry that you stayed whilst we were upgrading our changing rooms but am pleased to say both are now back in full operation. Many guests do come here for our leisure facilities however we are only 1/2 drive from Lincoln and there are also two fantastic National Trust properties a short drive away. We hope to see you again in the future and although the Wowcher deals are fantastic value our tariff rates also offer great value for the facilities we offer.

User 08/02/2022

The room was shoddy with well worn furniture. Creaky floor boards i can put up with but thread bare carpet maybe not. The walls could have done eith a repaint. The bathroom only had a shower over the bath which dome people can't use due to leg problems. The door wouldn't close properly and stayed slightly ajar, found that out on returning to room, had to pull it gard to close it properly and shoulder barge it to open. The pool was so full of people that the staff were taking phone numbers to ring when there was room, no showers do had to shower back in your room after walking back to it soaked with a towel round you.

David H, General Manager at The Olde Barn Hotel, responded to this review
Thank you for your review and I am sorry that you were disappointed with your stay. It would appear that the room you stayed in was one of our older rooms and although cleaned to a good standard is due for a refurbishment in the future. Obviously the hospitality industry has been heavily impacted due to COVID and planned refurbishments delayed due to the economic impact. The majority of our rooms do have a seperate shower unit as well as a bath and I am sorry you were not allocated one of these rooms. The hotel is old and as a result our floorboards do creak which is simply down to the age of the Hotel. I am not aware of any issues with our self closing doors and this will be rectified. The pool is available to all and we do not have a booking system in place and occasionally we do have to delay entry for the safety of guests. We have procedures in place for this eventuality and guests are called as soon as space is available, it is obviously a better experience with fewer users in. Both the male and female changing rooms have three showers in, so I am at a loss why you had to return to your room to shower. I am sorry that on this occasion your stay did not meet your expectations and please contact the hotel directly for any future booking and we will ensure you are allocated one of our superior refurbished rooms and a bottle of fizz to make up for your disappointment on this occasion.

We stayed here for a murder mystery night. Service: Pretty good, we had no issues. Staff were polite and helpful both on the reception and during the 'murder mystery evening' no complaints. Room: Spacious and clean. Bed was ok but wasn't the best, decoration was slightly dated but fine. Bathroom was great, spacious and modern. Bath and shower with fab water pressure. Plenty of storage and large tv. WiFi was fine. Tea/coffee making facilities in room, along with hair dryer, iron and ironing board. Room had a window and radiator so able to keep nice and warm. I would worry if our young son was with us as the rad was very hot when we arrived. General facilities: Seemed excellent, spotted lots of ramps / adaptations, wide corridors, nice decor around the hotel. We only stayed one night so didn't have much chance to use the health facilities or sepnd time in the communal areas but from what we saw it looked great. Dining area was lovely and well maintained. Function room where we had the murder mystery was really nice. Food: The evening meal that was part of the murder mystery evening was good, cauliflower soup was really tasty, the main of pork or beef was ok and the dessert was ok. I think the quality sufffered slightly with having to serve 110 meals at the same time! But it was fine, came in good time and hot; all of our table finished what was on their plates. Breakfast in the restaurant was fantastic, buffet style but nice and hot, fairly fresh and well maintained. Murder mystery: We had a really enjoyable evening, at first we were a little lost as it was our first time with something like this. The actors got really unto it and there was plenty of entertainment. With 10 round table it did mean a lot of turning around to see what was happening, sometimes whilst eating! But it was fun and entertaining. Will be definitely be doing this again hopefully with a larger group and absurdly at this hotel. I could not comment on the location / things to do around as we didn't really visit for that though I did seem a little isolated. But it was fairly straight forward to drive to and plenty of car parking at no extra cost.

David H, General Manager at The Olde Barn Hotel, responded to this review
Thank you for your detailed review, we really appreciate your feedback and I am delighted that your visit to us to attend one of our very popular Murder Mystery events more than met your expectations. My partner and i were gifted a murder mystery night and enjoyed the whole evening. We were given a warm welcoming at reception with the whole evening explained to us. Room was lovely and just what we needed. Our waitress ‘Jane' was extremely accommodating throughout our evening. Would definitely recommend this to anyone of any age. The hotel also has a health spa which we haven't yet had the opportunity to take advantage of but looks incredible. Will definitely be coming back!!

We visited the olde barn hotel for a murder mystery night. The hotel was clean and the beds were comfortable. The staff were all super friendly and helpful. I would like to give a special mention to Jane who went above and beyond with her customer service. She made time to have a chat, tell us about the area and sort out any issue you had. It's not very often you stay somewhere that you can't find a fault with but I can honestly say I would highly recommend staying here! The spa and gym were pleasant and we made use of this. The breakfast was beautiful and lots of choice.

Stayed 2 nights and overall was really happy with the whole package Would return but witnessed a few issues during our stay. Firstly room was not as described and little issues like remote to tv didn't link, plug in sink broke so had to unscrew… but the biggest issue was seeing a member of the restaurant staff being be-Littles and bullied by regular staff in front of customers. Ameanities excellent. Few things need ironing out

Staff were exceptional, friendly, caring and knowledgeable. Hotel was clean and for a 3 star, was more than I expected. Can't fault anything at all. We will be going back in the future. The location is out in the sticks, so there isn't much to do out of the hotel except strolling into the nearby village. But within the hotel, there is a health centre- gym, swimming pool etc.

David H, General Manager at The Olde Barn Hotel, responded to this review
Thank you for your lovely review and I am delighted that we more than met your expectations. I am pleased that you intend to stay with us again too. Although we are in a remote location we are only 1/2 hour from Lincoln City Centre and two lovely National Trust properties. We really appreciate your feedback and Its great to read that the team made your stay such an enjoyable one, we look forward to welcoming you back in the future.

This is a lovely hotel, surprisingly lush inside as on arrival it look very plain. All this changes once inside from the reception to the pool, sauna, steam room and gym. Room that we stayed in was absolutely fabulous very spacious and well equipped. Stay, you won't be disappointed !!!!!!

This was paid for with a voucher bought for my Christmas present. Overall it was nice and we enjoyed ourselves. The staff are so kind and very attentive, all through dinner and breakfast ensuring we were happy and in the bar too very engaging and friendly. The food was ok, not much option on the menu but we did enjoy our meals, although my husbands braised beef was tender mine was quite tough but still tasty. Luck of the draw! On entry the hotel is beautifully decorated, I think some refurbishment is underway though because upstairs the corridors and bedroom were very old fashioned and outdated, if this was refurbished to the standard we saw downstairs it would be gorgeous I'm sure. We were in room 602 which looks out over the car park and does have a lovely view of the fields. Unfortunately the bed springs could be felt from the mattress so I didn't have the best night, it would definitely benefit from a new mattress in there. The room was clean and the bathroom was lovely with a big bath and nice shower. The pool, sauna and jacuzzi are lovely and we really enjoyed our swim and time there.

David H, General Manager at The Olde Barn Hotel, responded to this review
Thank you for taking the time to review us and I am pleased you had a good stay with us although a little disappointed that you only scored us 3 out of 5 in view of your kind feedback. We will look at replacing the mattress in your room and I am sorry that you found it a little uncomfortable. We hope that you will consider staying with us again in the future.

Olde barn Hotel We have stayed 4 times at the olde barn great value with great amenities great for a relaxing recharge. Two nights bed breakfast and one evening dinner. Hotel is very clean staff hard working.

We booked a Travelzoo deal which was very good value. Our room was large , comfortable, clean and it had a lovely new bathroom. The fixed menu was limited and so we were offered to look at the bar menu and we could he an allowance of £19.95 per person to spend . The bar was busy and there was a good atmosphere. Breakfast was very busy the following morning. The furniture in the restaurant isn't as modern as the bar , but you can't have everything. All the staff were friendly, we did have a query with our account when we checked out , but this was dealt with in a professional manner.

David H, General Manager at The Olde Barn Hotel, responded to this review
I am delighted to read that you had a great stay with us and that it was also good value. We hope to see you again in the future and thank you for taking the time to review us.

The rooms, lounge and bar were lovely. Super spa facilities. Sadly the dining room was very shabby and the dinner poor. The main course was awash with gravy and the sweet 80% cream. Breakfast was good.

David H, General Manager at The Olde Barn Hotel, responded to this review
Thank you for your review and it is disappointing to read that you found the restaurant shabby as we have only recently given it a minor refurbishment replacing all the seating, changing all lighting, replacing all the chairs and adding new blinds and curtains. We have also changed all our menus to contain more home cooked dishes. I am pleased that the spa, room, public areas and bar were to your liking and I do hope that you will consider staying with us once again and give us the opportunity to offer you an improved dining experience.

"Facilities Truths"

Cleejoskin, Cleethorpes, United Kingdom 20/01/2022

Firstly let me say staff friendly and helpful and facilities clean and decor maintained even if old fashioned design.Rooms clean but never stopped in hotel and had to inform reception to make up room when stopping more than 1 night or they will not service?!! No reception document help issued nor in room no telephone or hotel documentation. Want to contact resteraunt or health spa walk as reception tell you to do. Never stopped hotel with a room phone and not available to use via info menu or directory etc The fixed resteraunt evening meal menu issued on reception arrival is required to be filled in and returned just like hospital menus are. The menu comprising choice of 3 starters/3 Mains/3 deserts very limiting, with no Al la carte menu (though bar for snacks like burgers) Food good but beware waitresses carrying hot food across hotel corridor from kitchen. Worst is they still advertise facilities not available eg in Health spar I stopped Mon&Tuesday when requested massage on Monday told earliest Friday or Saturday and the sauna and steam room out of action for spares still as previous visitor on trip advisor noted weeks ago. However the pool did have real water in it! Useful most rooms on ground floor but makes for long corridors and long walks. On leaving went to reception to pay for beer bill drunk in resteraunt day before but they had no record of it. I paid anyway and left. Overall not a special or luxury hotel to visit, missing facilities and no real resteraunt food choices. Old fashion design hotel with plenty more better facility hotels about. Biggest moan why Best Western still advertises facilities that are not available or out of action. 3/10

Bought for me and my partner for a christmas present great room and food only problem was sauna and steam room were out of order great staff too carnt fault it for the money very clean and tidy would defiantly go back

David H, General Manager at The Olde Barn Hotel, responded to this review
Thank you for your lovely review and I am delighted that your stay was an enjoyable one. Unfortunately both the sauna and steam room broke down in the same week, however they are both now repaired and operational. We hope that you can visit us again when you will have the chance to use these facilities.

"Poor experience"

2
User 17/01/2022

My husband brought me this as a gourmet escape for two and it certainly was not that! The food was not gourmet. It was 2 star at best. Interestingly the bar has more food options than the restaurant! The breakfast options were very limited, particularly for vegetarians, and the food was swimming with oil. The spa was essentially broken with the sauna and steam room not working. We were stuck in a back room over the bins. With cracks in the walls, a draw fell off the cupboard. Insects around. A space heater because the radiator was broken, that no one informed us of. If we were not here for the spa/gourmet experience and just staying staying 1 nights b&b on the way somewhere or for an experience (like the murder mystery we were not informed of when we booked) we would probably have not concerned ourselves with it but this was supposed to be a gourmet break. When I spoke to front desk they just said they were sorry but did nothing about it. However the staff were all very friendly and clearly loved the hotel, which is also a positive!

David H, General Manager at The Olde Barn Hotel, responded to this review
Thank you for you review and I am sorry that you found the meal options limited and room not to your liking. The dinner packages are amazing value and very popular and therefore we offer a limited menu to aid service, however the bar option is available to all. I am not aware of any dinner dishes that are cooked in oil and I am a loss to explain why you found any meal with excessive oil. Obviously some breakfast items are cooked in oil but there are many options available that are not. The sauna and sadly steam room did breakdown last week and we are awaiting parts but the pool, gym and jacuzzi were fully operational. The Murder Mystery is advertised on our website and throughout the Hotel and anyone can join us and again is fantastic value at £99 as are all out packages that all include room, dinner and breakfast for two. We would have happily offered another room option had we been made aware of your room issues and I am not sure why you were not moved. The team are indeed very friendly and do their upmost to give make our guests stay a good one. Sadly due to our rural location we are rather prone to a few insects which is part of being located near farm land. We appreciate your feedback and hope that you will give us the opportunity to restore your faith in the Hotel in the future.

demonwrangler, Barnsley, United Kingdom 17/01/2022

We booked two rooms for the murder mystery evening and it was great fun. We really enjoyed it. The rooms were large , spacious and spotless. The food was OK not brilliant but for mass catered events it wasn't bad. However breakfast was a little disappointing. We went at around 9 and it was busy many things had run out and queues for everything. We didn't see any croissants at all although others had them. The sausages were a bit anaemic too but again I think they rushed as they were running out. Perhaps timings for breakfast would help?

David H, General Manager at The Olde Barn Hotel, responded to this review
Thank you for your review and I am delighted that you enjoyed our murder mystery event. I am sorry breakfast was not quite as enjoyable experience though. Our breakfast service is for three hours but occasionally the first two hours are very quiet and the finally hour exceptionally busy. As guests are here on leisure we never stipulate a time and this does mean that at peak time the team are a little stretched to keep everything topped up.

Attended for a murder mystery night, it was fab. I don't think the murder mystery was that good. But the service was really good. The meal was average. Jane was amazing, she was attentive and went above and beyond

David H, General Manager at The Olde Barn Hotel, responded to this review
I am delighted that you enjoyed the service given at our Murder Mystery event although disappointed that the meal was not to your liking. Our menu changes for each Murder Mystery event but we are limited to dishes that suit the high volumes. It is great to read that Jane gave such good service and I will pass on your feedback to her. We hope to see you at a future event soon.

Back for our 6th stay, now that says it all!! This time we noticed the dinning room had recently been decorated and made a huge improvement with the decor. Phil the bar man was 1st class, very polite and attentive. Breakfasts are always a treat, with so much to choose from with self serve to make your own hearty plate full! Various cereals, fruits and yogurts, pastries and cakes. Bacon, eggs, tomatoes, beans, mushrooms etc With Lloyd and Jane sailing the team there is always extras if needed. Jane even told us of a great place to visit if we had time. So we did, visiting local Stamford, if you get the chance you will love it! Evening meals are always great too, much needed after a hearty swim in the pool...Amazing value for money! David you have done yourself and Dee proud with your achievements since being here...well done!! Will be back again thanks all

Mark B, Derby, United Kingdom 29/12/2021

Hotel was very clean, including the pool and lounge areas. Pool was very nice and kids loved it. Nice to have a sauna and jacuzzi for the adults as well. Steam room was not working unfortunately, but did not affect our experience. Evening meal was very good. In fact all 3 courses were great. Buffet breakfast was fresh and warm. Plenty of options and some of the best hash browns we've had. There was a mix up with the room we had been allocated, and our drinks bill has been incorrectly charged but both issues were rectified quickly and did not impact our experience.

"Only one saving grace"

2
User 29/12/2021

I have stayed at this hotel on numerous occasions and always had a good experience so we decided to book a 2 night stay for Christmas this year. However, I have never experienced such poor quality of food and disgraceful customer service as experienced during this stay. It appears the change in management has been for the worst. One particular member of staff, Dave, provided the worst customer service we have ever experienced, going as far as to argue with and snub guests. The only saving grace was the customer service provided by Jane during breakfast on Boxing Day. She is an asset to the hotel, being pleasant, courteous and going out of her way to help and provide for us. This should be the standard for all staff, management included, not a singular occurrence.

"Great murder mystery"

jaydeeve, yorkshire 29/12/2021

Murder mystery was fun, food excellent. I would recommend this hotel but the table service was a bit hit and miss as they were serving 120 people. They served a table and moved on but didn't check to see if all the people had food had to go and ask for soup and main course as most people on the table had eaten their food and the vegetable were sat getting cold.

We were put into a room for the disabled when (we are not) which meant that the wash basin was at thigh level. The basin was hanging off the wall and the single lever tap was so powerful it sprayed water everywhere and we had to place our bath towels on the floor to soak it up. The window leaked and didn't close properly. The beds were awful. I couldn't sleep on my mattress because I could feel all the springs sticking into my body so I had to turn the mattress over. Food was very poor and portions were small. Service was terrible. we waited three qarters of an hour for our starters ditto main course. I had a brandy and asked for it in a brandy glass but was told that the tumbler I had been given was the only type they had. We would never stay again

David H, General Manager at The Olde Barn Hotel, responded to this review
I am very sorry to read your feedback and it is very disappointing to here about in your social media review and not when you were staying with us. Had you advised us that you had issues with your room we would have happily re-located you immediately. I am at a loss to explain delays in food service as everyone was dining together, meals all pre ordered and service at the time advised, I am sorry that the portions did not meet your expectations. I will purchase brandy glasses in January as over the Festive season they have all appeared to have gone missing. We appreciate your feedback and I apologise that your Christmas stay with us was not an enjoyable one.

"Hit and miss"

61sheza, Cambridge, United Kingdom 27/12/2021

Jane (waitress) was a god send. Helpful she couldn't do enough to make our last day enjoyable. Her service was excellent, she was friendly, knowledgeable, nothing was an inconveience to her, she enjoyed her job and it showed in the way she treated guests and looked after them. Beverly was great at her job too, they made an excellent team. We were not fortunate enough to have had Jane on our service (2nd) Christmas day lunch and it showed. The service was hit and miss depending on who turned up, but no amount of good service could make up for the terrible food. Christmas Dinner consisted of roast potatoes white with some brown edges, something over cooked and mashable, which we were informed were carrots, over cooked green beans, so soft they were mush. Thick slices of turkey that tasted of water. Others in our party had some stuffing too. The food may have been made for weaning babies it was that bad. Later we were informed that the food had ran out and there was nothing left for staff to eat. I don't know who the chef was, I would be extremely surprised if it were Nick (there was more than one,). Davis (waiter) was the most rude, disrespectful, person I have met at any hotel. Our first evening meal, he came with paper and pen to discuss my alergies, (which had been discussed with the hotel 3 months previously so we would not have to endure the rigmarole of discussing every ingredient in the food and having a salad substitute) he was so rude, couldn't be bothered to check our booking. After a heated discussion he left to retreave our booking information and never returned. I was not able to eat the food on the menu. Finally the chef Nick came to our table and offered to cook something I could eat. The meal Nick cooked was the best beef I had eaten in a long time, melt in the mouth excellent. We had high expectations after that meal. Breakfast on both mornings was good, choice was great nothing was over cooked. The majority of staff were good to excellent. However when Davis was around things were not good, he was not only rude to guests but to staff too. He has an over inflated ego, and is extremely careless. He dropped the food plates onto the table from a hight, got into your personal space causing uncomfort. When moving a large metal food trolley he smashed it into the back of my chair, later he was moving a large wooden table and smashed it even harder into my chair jolting my back. Jane, Beverly, Stacey, Obe? Were excellent hard workers.

David H, General Manager at The Olde Barn Hotel, responded to this review
Thank you for your review and I am very sorry that all your expectations were not met. I am however pleased to read that a number of the team excelled and gave you such excellent customer service. The rooms are in need of a revamp. They are tired and evidently unloved. Peeling paintwork, holes in walls, missing grout and sealant in bathroom, chipped and damaged doors, iron shaped burn marks on the poor quality carpet. However, awesome shower with excelent water pressure.

David H, General Manager at The Olde Barn Hotel, responded to this review
Thank you for your review are rooms are certainly loved and we are starting to take rooms off line to give them a bit of a makeover. Due to high occupancy since re-opening we have not had much opportunity and have concentrated on public areas. The restaurant has just been fully re-decorated. I am delighted that you found the shower to be awesome and I am sure that on any future visit you will notice that are rooms have been given a much needed touch up.

Booked for our wedding anniversary as we got married at the Olde Barn 4 years ago. Couldn't fault anything and had a lovely weekend. The hotel is clean, rooms very spacious with large bed, bathroom with walk in shower, bath and 2 hand basins, all staff very friendly and food really nice. Cinderz story was something different. Unfortunately some of the audience were so rude as to talk through it, but that was nothing that the hotel could do anything about. If the hotel had other events similar to this we would consider attending.

Stayed here on a Travelzoo deal and got excellent value for money. Lovely hotel, nice room (although bed was a bit lumpy and could do with a lick of paint, plus the radiator in the bathroom needs a good clean!)) and excellent breakfast. The evening meal was also nice, although didn't feel very cosy. Good bar area, quiet room and excellent staff. Would definitely go back. We also used the pool area and it was very clean and nicely kept.

The room was clean but tatty. Evening meal wasn't brilliant. Soup was like it was made with a stock cube. Broccoli was overcooked. Wasn't too keen on eating my meal during the Muder Mystery. Couldn't concentrate properly.

David H, General Manager at The Olde Barn Hotel, responded to this review
Thank you for your review and I am sorry that you did not like our home made soup which obviously does require a stock cube. The whole point of the murder mystery is that its meal with entertainment and I am sorry you did not find the murderer. I do hope that you would re-consider staying with us once again.

Stayed for a murder mystery evening. Bar was reasonably priced. Nice bar food. Nice meal with the event. Breakfast was average. Good choice but sausage was bland and mushy. Disturbed sleep due to service trolleys going up and down the hall several times between 4 and 7 am Did not use bath as handrail seemed to be rusty.

David H, General Manager at The Olde Barn Hotel, responded to this review
Thank you for your review. We appreciate your feedback and I am sorry that your night was disturbed, at night there is only a night porter on duty who does not carry out any tasks that would disturb guests so I am at a loss to explain the service trolleys you heard. I am sorry that the sausages were not to your liking, sadly our supplier substituted our regular sausages due to supply issues. I am however pleased that you enjoyed our murder mystery event. We do hope to see you once again in the future.

Lovely hotel. Although heating not working in room but they sorted it out quickly. Bed was really comfortable. Attended for an event and the food was great. Busy at breakfast but Jane sorted us out and was really helpful. Lots of parking and really close to Downton shopping

"Nice hotel but a couple of issues."

Our room was large & very clean. The bed was comfortable. Bizarre situation in the bar where the menu was being replaced by a new menu at 6pm and the staff were getting confused at the overlap. Several items not available so we couldn't have our first choice but the food we received was hot and flavoursome. Disgusting incident where we witnessed a member of the bar staff make a huge fuss of someone's dog, then served the owners with drinks, watched them sit down and then told them they couldn't stay in the bar with the dog. The hotel markets itself as dog friendly - most dog friendly hotels will allow dogs in the bar area but not the restaurant. The owners were very upset and as dog lovers ourselves, it spoilt our evening. This same member of bar staff told us that breakfast would be served from 6.30am and yet on arrival at the restaurant at 6.40am, discovered it was actually 7am and we had to wait in the corridor. Such a shame as a beautiful hotel spoiled for us by poor customer service.

User 22/11/2021

I was in the area for work and needed somewhere to stay. The hotel was convenient and was one of those bonus nights being a delightful places to stay. My room has recently been renovated and had the WOW factor. It was great to finish the stay with some good old fashioned GREAT friendly customer service from Jane during breakfast, thank you.

User 17/11/2021

Firstly the hotel is good value for money, we had a lovely room 301, which was spotlessly clean & spacious. The staff in general were very friendly and accommodating, in particular reception, bar staff & Jane at breakfast. We also enjoyed the pool & spa facilities. Most communal areas are tastefully decorated but we understand that some of the bedrooms & definitely the restaurant need bringing up to the same standards. Food was ok but due to having to preorder from menu - it affected the freshness of certain aspects, especially with the starters. All in all though a lovely stay.

David H, General Manager at The Olde Barn Hotel, responded to this review
Thank you for your kind review and I am delighted you had a enjoyable stay with us and that it was such great value. We hope to see you once again in the future.

Well worth a visit. The food was lovely. The pool and spa were nice, although the steam room was broken. The rooms, including the restaurant, are slightly dated and need a bit of a tart up but the bed and pillows were comfy. Everything was very clean.

David H, General Manager at The Olde Barn Hotel, responded to this review
hank you for your 5* review we really appreciate your feedback and I am delighted that you had a great stay with us. We are in the process of updating our bedrooms and on any future visit I am sure you will notice the difference. We look forear to welcoming you back soon.

"A good weekend but some issues need to be addressed."

User 13/11/2021

We spent the weekend there for a birthday surprise. The hotel is trying very hard and we had a great weekend with our dog. The staff were brilliant, nothing was too much bother... surprise cake and Champagne...delivered to our table with style The room was spotless and very comfortable. On the downside, the Covid protocols in the restaurant in the morning were sadly lacking. No masks, no social distancing, no ventilation, overcrowded and very hot and as no sanitizer offered at the entrance several dozens of guests of all ages touched the cutlery at the self service buffet. A shame because the food was very good. The outside is very shabby and needs a makeover. Again sad, as the hotel on the whole was excellent value for money.

David H, General Manager at The Olde Barn Hotel, responded to this review
Thank you for your kind feedback and we really appreciate your comments. Sadly as restrictions have now been totally lifted we are unable to enforce any COVID protocol as is the case with most hospitality operations and it is down to personal choice. We are making improvements to the outside and this has been re-painted and additional lighting added and obviously in Spring our flowers will be in full bloom. I am delighted that you found the team made your stay a special one and we were excellent value for money and we look forward to welcoming you back in the future.

Warm and comfortable hotel in a peaceful and restful location. Swimming pool, jacuzzi, gym, bar decent restaurant, great rates. Jane, Jamie and Elsa looked after us very well in the dining room. All of the staff are great without exception. The rooms are large. The beds are huge and wonderfully comfortable. The shower was great and huge towels were provided.

David H, General Manager at The Olde Barn Hotel, responded to this review
Thank you for your kind comments and I will certainly pass on your comments to the restaurant team who excelled in the service they gave. We do hope to see you again in the near future.

We have just got back from a couple of nights away here for our anniversary! I have to say I would highly recommend this hotel to anyone, the only reason I didn't give 5 stars is because the mattress wasn't the most comfortable and obviously needs upgrading as for a super king it was very obvious how people had slept previously as the middle of the mattress was still as new but dipped off on either side and was slightly uncomfortable and noisy when turning over in the night!! Apart from that we have no other reason to moan!! Our room was spacious, clean and lovely. The staff were all outstanding, very friendly, helpful, warm, welcoming and couldn't do enough to help and make you feel ‘at home' the swimming pool etc were great and the entire hotel was spotless. Some areas did need some updating such as the restaurant but all that can be forgiven but lovely food and staff!!! I would highly recommend this hotel to anyone and I promise we will be returning! My in laws are in the process of finding dates to suit them on our recommendation and let be honest nobody wants to upset their in laws so I hope that makes people realise I genuinely loved this place and recommend it!!!!!

David H, General Manager at The Olde Barn Hotel, responded to this review
It is lovely to read that the team were outstanding and we really appreciate your recommendation. We are currently replacing a number of mattresses and your room was identified as requiring one and I am sorry that you found the bed a bit uncomfortable. I am delighted that we will be welcoming your in laws in the near future. We look forward to welcoming you back too in the future.

Just stopped again we like going the staff are very helpful and a good price for accommodation Positive things friendly accommodating staff staff Good room size Access to leisure activities More food choice in bar menu than restaurant Negative Quite noisy when full but that is only due it's. A large hotel Due to Covid restrictions been lifted felt a little un easy but awere that's personal choice on mask etc . Was one way system before With it been. Dog friendly ( we like Dogs ) but was woken up 6.30 by a dog barking and was barking and walls. Thin App neg things not hotels fault but feel combination

"Mini break for honeymoon"

Hednesford123, Cannock, United Kingdom 10/11/2021

Hi We came to stay with you on Monday 8th November for 2 nights. On our first night we had a 3 course meal at 7:30pm we was the only ones in there to start with them few others came, we had our starters which may I say was very nice then they brought out 2 sea bass which we didn't order we ordered belly pork and the meatballs do that was taken back and everyone else had their starters and main course then a waitress came up and said are you ready for desert and my husband said well we would like our main course first and they was sorry about delay but then we ordered lemon cheesecake and berry meringue which the lemon cheesecake came out but lemon meringue came out and not the berry one, was then told they had ran out but I wasn't given the choice just left it at that which I thought was rude. Wednesday morning went for breakfast at 7am as we needed to leave early, I was asked by the gentleman that was taking room numbers for breakfast if I was with the coach load, I said No do I look Chinese as they were all Chinese,I thought that was very rude too, there was people in the restaurant when we got there, there was NO eggs, NO milk & the bread for toast was all mouldy, which is disgusting!!! then the waitress called Jane came up to us and said are you ok we said no not really and told her what had been said to me and also that there was no eggs, bread mouldy, no butter or milk and she dealt with this straight away for us, I must tell you that this waitress Jane was a lovely lady and helped us very much so and I think that you should tell her from us thank you for All her help. Was looking forward to this little break as it was part of our honeymoon as we got married 3weeks ago, so disappointed at what had happened Regards Mr & Mrs Coe

David H, General Manager at The Olde Barn Hotel, responded to this review
Thank you for your review and I am sorry that we had a few operational issues during your stay. Like lots of hospitality operations we are having huge problems with suppliers who totally miss essential items from our food orders or send poor quality goods. Sadly when this occurs in the morning we are unable to rectify until we can go to the local wholesale retailer. It is most unusual to have issues during dinner service and I am sorry that this was the case and I have passed your feedback onto my Restaurant Manager to address. I have contacted you directly and we hope that you afford us the opportunity to restore your faith in us.

We stayed for a murder mystery weekend which was really good unfortunately we did not solve the murder with the right person but enjoyed taking part! It was a bit chaotic at times and we wished that the characters would have introduced themselves!

David H, General Manager at The Olde Barn Hotel, responded to this review
I am sorry to read that you did not identify the murderer on this occasion but hope that we may see you at a future event when you may catch the person in the act!! Thank you for taking the time to review us.

We got a good deal from Travelzoo on this hotel. We had two nghts B&B with dinner too on the first night. Check-in was simple and efficient. The room was modern and well decorated with an nice bathroom. Dinner on the first night was only a little hampered by the wedding celebrations in progress - no ice, no water jugs, no wine of our choice - but pretty minor. A mix up over the starters at dinner left us waiting a short while at the beginning but the rest was served without fuss. The food was good. We ate the second night in the bar and again we had a wait for our food but were helped by a couple free drinks. We went to the pool twice during our stay, which was clean and well kept, with an excellent jacuzzi. Overall the stay was good and we would certainly go back if we needed to be in the area again.

David H, General Manager at The Olde Barn Hotel, responded to this review
Thank you for your kind feedback, I am delighted that your stay was an enjoyable one and that you had the opportunity to dine , drink and use our health club whilst with us. We are a very busy hotel and we appreciate your patience whilst serving the wedding that was taking place during your visit.

"A Mixed Bag"

User 01/11/2021

Arrived to easy parking & nice decor, but when we entered our room it felt tired, however I was travelling with kids so wasn't really bothered about a pristine presentation. However the extra bed that was offered on the website and had been requested on my booking was not there. Reception said it wasn't possible to add it due to the room I'd chosen to book lacking space, although that was not made clear on the website. After some discussion, reception contacted housekeeping with my request, they argued over the radio but eventually said it would be added to our room which saved our holiday. We were just going out as the spare bed arrived and although it proved fit for function once in, the actual mattress looked incredibly worn and dirty and worryingly my young child picked up a Rentokil container whilst playing which had been left under the bed. Once the room was sorted we settled in, found the beds comfortable, the room nice and quiet and the facilities such as the pool and game station great for entertaining children at no further cost. Breakfast was advertised as continental when I booked but turned out to offer a full English which was nice. Sadly after one morning in the Breakfast room we felt far too uncomfortable to remain and upon request were allowed to collect our cereal and take it to the quieter bar. Covid restrictions may have been relaxed, but as others have said in reviews the hotel could and should be maintaining some degree of effort to maintain a secure environment. We enjoyed our stay over all, but felt very anxious the whole time, the breakfast room was packed with no ventilation, staff did not wear masks, there were random bottles of hand gel hidden in a few locations but none were visible and guests were not encouraged to use any. Watching people serve themselves food, all touching the same utensils with no sanitisation was really off putting and we did not consume any more of the hot food because of it. The staff were a mixed bag, some appeared to have a less than welcoming attitude but then I witnessed them having to deal with numerous complaints from other guests which left them frazzled. We did became known by a few though and were greeted in a friendly manner at breakfast and in particular by a young dark haired lady who said that she was new in reception, she was very pleasant and went out of her way to help. Overall I think we enjoyed the Olde Barn far more than some of the other hotels we have tried, children were welcome, as were dogs I think if we had chosen to bring ours and the facilities were good, it is just a shame that the whole place seems a bit tired, the cleanliness and distancing with the current Covid situation is severely lacking and it felt like some of the staff were in need of greater support and management. This hotel has huge potential if the right person can give it an overhaul and improve standards.

David H, General Manager at The Olde Barn Hotel, responded to this review
Thank you for your review and detailed feedback. Having recently taken over as General Manager your feedback is really appreciated. I certainly have a number of things to address but as you have said the hotel has a lot of potential and I intend to improve many standards in the coming months. The relaxing of COVID restrictions is in line with Government guidelines and this does mean mean that we no longer operate with the restrictions we had in place. I am sorry that this meant you did not feel comfortable in public areas. No one is now required to wear masks and this is the same in all public places except hospitals. We can no longer enforce the regulations that were previously in place unfortunately.

"Murder Mystery evening"

3
Dipperstoo, United Kingdom 01/11/2021

This was not the first time we have attended a Murder Mystery evening at this hotel. Generally the hotel is your average hotel suited to one or two night stays. It's comfortable and clean if a little tired in some public spaces. The Health Club including. Swimming pool is adequate but the steam room was far too hot -I couldn't sit on the bench without risking burning my nether regions. Our room was a good size, especially the bed (a bit too big as it was very difficult to get between the wall and the bed). The room and bathroom were very clean and well equipped. We decided to have lunch in the bar before checking in. Friendly staff. Offers for coffee and cake were everywhere but the staff had no idea what the cake would be when and if it arrived AND the coffee machine was broken so only instant coffee - no thank you. We ordered two prawn and smoked salmon salads -NO PRAWNS - what? Asked if we could have extra salmon but no idea if we got more. The salad was very poor. Large heap of shredded pretty tough lettuce, bits of chopped cucumber and onion with bits of salmon on top. No tomatoes, no coleslaw or any other things you normally get in a salad. The dressing tasted of cooking oil. For almost £12 each they were dreadful. We were allocated room 706. Normally this would be on floor 7 but it's the second floor of a 2 storey building. I couldn't find the lift so asked at reception. There isn't one. I then asked how they knew I could climb stairs. It was apparently up to me to ask when booking about the lift, not up to them to check when allocating rooms (I didn't book a specific room and wasn't asked which floor I wanted when booking). Not very helpful. I was very grudgingly asked if I wanted a ground floor room. The Murder Mystery was great fun and the accompanying dinner was fine-vegetables a bit uninspiring but beautiful pieces of beef and chicken (with a veggie alternative). The breakfast was superb - just one comment and that is that the Grapefruit juice should be labelled as so many medications can't be taken with Grapefruit.

David H, General Manager at The Olde Barn Hotel, responded to this review
Thank you for you review and your detailed feedback. Our hotel is only on two levels and I am sorry the room numbering confused you. Any guests with mobility issues would typically advice us at the time of booking and it certainly is not a hotel practice to ask guests otherwise. We do have a disabled lift which allows guests to excess the 700 bedrooms however this would require some distance to walk to the room so it is not ideal. I am sorry was not up to our usual high standard but sadly we are being impacted with poor food supplies which is on going and often basic food items, this is a direct consequence of COVID delivery problems. The coffee machine is sadly waiting for parts, which is sadly out of our control. The steam room by its very name is hot, however we do issues towels before entering the health club. I am delighted you enjoyed our murder mystery event and your breakfast with us. I do hope that we will have the pleasure of welcoming you back to the Olde Barn again in the near future.

We had a fantastic evening and stay at the Olde Barn for the Murder Mystery event. I stayed with my Mum and 2 of my Aunts and they throughly enjoyed it, staff were lovely and friendly. Murder Mystery included meal and entertainment and both were very good. The only downside was we didn't catch the Murder. Great value for money. My Aunt left some belonging in the room, reception located these and had them returned to us swiftly! Great service! Thank you

Could do better on the restaurant front.meal on first night was undercooked sea bass with carrots and red cabbage....wasn't pleasing to the eye but was hungry so ate it. This was supposed to be a 4star meal....more like training camp

David H, General Manager at The Olde Barn Hotel, responded to this review
I am sorry that your meal was not too your liking, we serve up to 100 meals every evening so your feedback is disappointing and I hope the team rectified this on the night. Sea bass is certainly a quality product and although we are a three star property it is certainly a four star standard, certainly not many training camps would have this on the menu. I am sorry that your expectations were not met.

"No worth the virgin experience"

User 22/10/2021

On booking was not told by reception that there was a wedding on at the same time as our stay. Would booked another day. Staff were more concerned about the wedding guests than anyone else staying there. Staff didn't know we had a afternoon tea. So it was rushed and poorly presented the bread was hard and so were the cakes. Sent it back really ruined our day as we didn't eat anything all day looking forward to that. Manager took it back after we complained and agreed to give us a free meal at dinner time. Room was very dated was a superior room but premier inn room are far supuor to this one. All together very bad experience.

User 22/10/2021

My husband and I stayed at the olde barn as a little 2 night get away. The hotel is situated in lovely countryside surroundings. We received a warm welcome from the reception, we'd arrived early so chose to explore lovely Lincolnshire and ate whilst we were out and about. When we checked in the newly appointed manager and his team were in the process of assessing the quality of the rooms and it was decided that a more suitable room would be afforded to us. The process was efficient and stream-less and we were given another room that afforded a more comfortable room at the managers discretion. The room was spacious clean and had all the amenities that we needed. Don't let the tiredness of the hotels distract from the super friendly and attentive staff here. We had amazing friendly and professional service, the breakfast was excellent and we had some yummy bar food(recommend the cheese platter) ! The breakfast was well organised and the wide variety of hot English breakfast and continental and vegetarian options are perfectly balanced. We had a lovely evening meal that we both thought was wonderful, with again lovely service. The hotel affords a very nice pool jacuzzi and sauna that we enjoyed each day. In all a lovely stay, comfortable, clean and excellent friendly service. Whilst the decor is a little tired in the rooms and dining area don't let this distract you from staying here as the welcoming and attentive staff far exceeds this hence our review award. The new manager is new in post and is super enthusiastic to quality, service and the hotels need of refurbishment. We look forward to visiting the olde bar in the near future and will be recommending the hotel to our friends and family.

"We turned our 2 night stay into 3 because it was so good"

5
User 21/10/2021

We stayed here on a travelzoo deal, which included 1 dinner and 2 nights bed and breakfast. On the second evening we decided that we were enjoying our stay so much that we requested an extra night. We were able to stay in the same room, and got it at the discounted price of the original deal. The hotel is in a good location, but far enough away from major roads to be a very peaceful setting. Our room was spacious and impeccably clean, with everything we needed. The 3 course dinner is from a set menu (which changes every night from a set of 3, but is limited to 4 starters, 4 mains and 4 puds).. The choices are decent, and we thoroughly enjoyed our meals. There is also a bar menu. Breakfast was as substantial as you wanted it to be, and the food was of good quality. All in all, a very good break. Although the hotel is listed as 3 star, we have stayed in several 4 star hotels which didn't reach the standard of the Olde Barn hotel.

We enjoyed our gift of a 2 night stay with dinner, bed and breakfast and wine. Our superior room was large, quiet and comfortable , especially the bed. The bathroom was clean with a bath and a separate shower. The staff, from reception to the dining room were all friendly, helpful and efficient. The two table service dinners were very tasty and there was a good choice of hot and cold dishes at the buffet breakfast. Some areas do need refurbishment but it did not spoil our experience. We hope to return in the future.

Reception areas/bar areas clean and bright. Restaurant tired, shabby. Room 202 smelt of backed up drains and had to be moved. Both 201 and 202 very tired room - Furniture battered and tatty. Bathrooms recently refurbished but taps in 201 completely loose. Generally clean. Staff seemed somewhat chaotic in evening. No atmosphere In restaurant, no music. Tiny rock hard bread rolls with starters. Staff comments were oh well, If u chose prawn cocktail You get brown sliced bread too. One prawn cocktail came without bread! Brought main courses before starter cleared. Main course Luke warm, veg hot and good. Breakfast - no brown bread or mushrooms. Had to wait 10 minutes for beans to be replenished. Hot water for tea was barely hot. Plates were cold. Health club. Pool area Tired and needed update. Man shaving his face sat at pool side!!!

David H, General Manager at The Olde Barn Hotel, responded to this review
Thank you for your feedback and I am very sorry that your stay did not meet your expectations. Sadly as a result of COVID we have supplier issues that impact wholesale purchases in the same way it is impacting the supermarkets. I am pleased to say that since your stay we have replaced the music system in the restaurant and we are intending to refurbish some of our older rooms and restaurant in the near future. I do hope that you will give us the opportunity to restore your faith in the hotel in the future.

We paid for a superior room, it was old and dated. Marked pine furniture. Shower fell to bits trying to turn it on. When we did get it on there was no pressure. The food was frozen. We had beef and were given mint sauce. We asked the bouncer/waitress for horseradish sauce but she dissapeard never to be seen again. Breakfast was even worse. Would never stop again

We stay at the Olde barn a few time a year it's a lovey friendly hotel … The leisure and spa facilities are great as are the staff… The rooms are in need of a little updating but for our two night deal it's well worth the money. The three cause dinner is quite good normally the night we ate there my meal was below standard I ordered a Caesar salad and it was dry and it looked a if it had been thrown on the plate such a shame as the produce was good! no dressing? We ate in the bar on the second night and the food was really tasty we all cleared our plates! Breakfast was really good lots of choice full English plus continental Excellent…. Only one problem was the waiting staff seem uninterested in there jobs no good morning if I asked for anything there was no smile nothing…. Jane was the only person that seemed to enjoy her job clearing tables asking if we needed anything and with a smile such a lovely girl….plus she would give us new places to visit as we have been to this hotel quite often and she keeps us going….

Everything was perfect from cleanliness to view from hotel bedroom window. The evening meal and breakfast was great. We visited Lincoln Castle which was only 20 miles away and a fantastic day out. Beautiful location and staff were very friendly.

"Not a luxury country spa hotel"

georgettefhall, Swadlincote, United Kingdom 28/09/2021

This hotel was booked when our chosen Virgin Experience luxury country spa hotel closed down as a result of covid19. This was not an appropriate substitute so left us feeling that we had not received value for money or the expected experience. The hotel is fine as somewhere to stay for groups and is obviously used for corporate courses. The evening meal on the first night was really good, and still good on the second night. The breakfasts were OK, the staff were friendly and the hotel was clean. In addition, the Health club was OK and usable, so it was not a bad experience, just not what was expected for a birthday treat. The hotel would benefit from some updating, especially in the vaulted dining room which could be so much better. The reception and lounge area are really tastefully decorated and these are what you see on photos. It should not be on the Virgin Experience list as a luxury spa break.

David H, General Manager at The Olde Barn Hotel, responded to this review
I am sorry that as a result of another Hotel letting you down that your experience was not as enjoyable due to the last minute hotel substitution. I appreciate the points you have raised and in the coming months we intend to address many issues that will ensure a more luxurious experience for all our guests.

"Not able to talk to someone who will confirm a Groupon booking that I have spent money on!"

User 22/09/2021

I have been ringing your reservations line since yesterday afternoon. I was asked to call back both yesterday afternoon and night time.  I then rang again this morning and was through to a woman who told me that the reservation system was in use and she would ring me back, which didn't happen. I have then tried ringing over 10 times this afternoon, where the system has put me 2nd in line, then 1st, back to 2nd and then 3rd and 9th in the same call or left me at 1st in line until it cuts me off. I have bought a Groupon voucher for your Murder Mystery Evening on 23rd October 21, however, your booking system does not now leave me with much confidence for the evening. I have spent the money yet am unable to confirm the booking, which is both frustrating and frankly unacceptable.

"Two night stay"

bdon257, Morpeth, United Kingdom 21/09/2021

We stayed here for two nights in a superior room in a quiet part of the hotel. The room was clean, comfortable and spacious. The dining room however, is in need of upgrading, it is very tired looking, with worn tables. It looks out onto a courtyard which could be a resource but sadly is miserable and dull. One morning they ran out of bacon and we were told there was no more. The following morning the orange juice ran out and wasn't replaced either. The staff were all very pleasant and with a bit of money spent on updating the tired parts of the building it could be much more attractive.

I used to stay here when on business a lot until I gave up about five years ago. The staff weren't very friendly and I just didn't want to stay here again. HOWEVER, in need of a room recently while away on business I decided to give them a another go. Actually, I'm glad I did. The whole place has a much better atmosphere and the value for money was excellent. Unlike a lot of hotels that seem to have put their prices up massively, the Olde Barn Hotel is offering value. Well done and I'll be returning.

First class breakfast in a lovely hotel. Food was very good at breakfast, plenty to choose from and nice hot buffet, such friendly helpful staff. My only gripe was no room service unless you ask for it which would have been fine if I'd have been told.

Thank you for your lovely review. It is great to see and I will pass it on to my team. As a result of COVID we had to change our procedures but it will be back in place fully in the near future.

Worst experience I've had. Cost a lot. Pool tiny and turned away as full. Hard bed. Dirty table with sewage smell coming in. Poor warmed small meals and dried tart slices. Thin wine £17 which is £4 in the shops. Breakfast was ok and best part of the meals and experience. Place needs a makeover as very run down.

David H, General Manager at The Olde Barn Hotel, responded to this review
Thank you for your review and I am very sorry to read that your stay was not an enjoyable one. The hotels pool is 15 meters and considerably larger than most hotels and I am sorry that due to high demand that entry would have to be delayed. We have to restrict the numbers for guests safety, although this would have only been an hour delay. Sadly all drinks are more expensive than the supermarkets and our drink prices are standard for the industry. It is clear that your stay did not meet your expectations, which is disappointng and we apprecaite your feedback and will look to address the points you have raised.

In its day this hotel would have been highly regarded, but outside is definitely in need of update. Internal decor of good standard. However it still carries charm and our stay was enjoyable. Food was excellent but the service in restaurant was sadly lacking at times due to staff shortage and untrained younger waitresses

"Ok but not wow"

User 15/09/2021

Staff pleasant enough but some were inexperienced ( only just started) They didn't know how to open a bottle of Prosecco - the food in restaurant in the evening was ok but nothing to write home about and there was a mix up with the starters

David Hartzig, General Manager at The Olde Barn Hotel, responded to this review
Thank you for your review and I am sorry that as a result of losing a number of staff that we do have a number of new staff who are still learning and not quite up to speed yet. Hospitality has been heavily impacted by COVID and there is a nationwide shortage of hospitality staff. They are being trained but this will take time as you will appreciate. We will have a WOW factor soon.

"Not my best overnight stay at a hotel"

dawnl785, Lincolnshire, United Kingdom 14/09/2021

This hotel badly needs an update. The rooms are dark & have quite an odour to them. There was only warm water, so by the time you had finished running your bath it wasn't hot. We stayed 2 nights paying £240 at a discounted rate & we wouldn't go back. We had to wait sometimes 20 minutes to get a drink in the evenings & the same time to be seated for breakfast in the morning. I had to ask at reception for more tea for our room as we had used the ONE that was there.

David Hartzig, General Manager at The Olde Barn Hotel, responded to this review
I am sorry that your stay was not to your expectations and I will look into the water issue as this is a concern and needs addressing. Sadly due to staff shortages which is throughout the hospitatlity industry we are running with far less staff than we want too but this is something out of our hands. Thank you for taking the time to review us.

Nice hotel but not much round about - one minute drive to local pub but check opening times. Pool looked lovely but didn't use it. Bar food was great and breakfast good, if a little slow due to staffing shortages. Nice comfy public areas.

"Sometimes it's just the little things that matter."

markdb1961, Manchester, United Kingdom 07/09/2021

We went on a two day break via Buyagift. Check in was great, everywhere was clean, and the room was big. The staff worked their socks off. At first sight everything was fine. But then the little things started to be encountered. All the plug sockets, except one, were completely out of range from the bed. At exactly the opposite side of the room. The socket by the bed was only suitable for a plug with a circular top pin - not the plug that everyone in the country is used to. As I need a CPAP machine, this presented a health problem. On the first night, we were entitled to a meal each. This can best be described as a "stealth" meal, as it was all but invisible. The single piece of beef and the "dollop" of what looked like powdered mash looked rather lonely on the plate. And when the veg came it was clearly (in the eyes of any half normal human being) a single portion requiring dividing into two. The following morning, there was no bacon by the time we turned up for breakfast - around 9am - as they had "run out". The second evening saw staff shortages, and, bizarrely, at some stage, we saw someone being interviewed for a job in full public view. The thing is, this hotel actually is better than its performance whilst we were there. But it really seemed to lack "management". And a few coats of paint here and there. It's sad, because it really won't take much to get it right.

David Hartzig, General Manager at The Olde Barn Hotel, responded to this review
I am sorry that your stay did not meet your expectations. Having recently taken over as General Manager there are many things that I will be addressing to improve customer service moving forward. I do hope that you would consider staying wih us again when I am confident you will see numerous improvements in all aspects of your stay.

"Food shortage"

1
User 03/09/2021

Just had two nights at this hotel. First day was OK, pool and jacuzzi etc were fine, problems began when it came to eating in the Gravity Bar that night. Ordered food only for a few minutes later to be told "We've no rice", ok I'll just have chips instead. Following night, even worse. No staff on duty, queue at the bar for drinks or food was about 10 long, poor barman was run ragged. After about an hours wait we had managed to order our food only for a staff member to come to tell us that not only was there STILL no rice, there was now no steaks, gammon, burgers, scampi! Supplier problems was the excuse given. Do the management not know that you cannot run a bar meals service if you don't have the staples? Did the kitchen staff not see supplies were getting low and inform management? Do they not know how to stocktake and when that shows shortages, to go to a cash n carry wholesaler to stock up on those basic staple items? In the end the only food available was either vegetarian options or food that our children would not eat so we ended up having to drive to the nearest town and search for somewhere we could eat at. Not impressed at all, total lack of organisation and foresight. There was a wedding the day after we left, I certainly hope they got their food without the problems we and a lot of other guests had.

4 night stay during the end of August. I was in a top floor superior room which you had to watch your head as the ceiling was sloped and there were stains on the carpet. On my first night the remote for the TV wasn't working, the telephone wasn't working and there was only a blind on one of the skylight windows. I went to reception to tell them this, they gave me some batteries for the remote but it still didn't work. The following day the remote was fixed but they said they couldn't do anything about the blind and they had no more available telephones to change the faulty one. On the plus side the breakfast each morning was very nice and Jane who worked in the restaurant at breakfast was lovely, she always made sure my granddaughter was ok with what was offered for breakfast. The gym and swimming pool facilities were brilliant. The location was nice and was only a 5 minute drive to Arena UK which was where we went each day. So overall my stay was ok.

David Hartzig, General Manager at The Olde Barn Hotel, responded to this review
I am delighted that you had an enjoyable stay with us and I am sorry to read that you found faults in your room. I will make sure our maintenance team check the room and rectify the issues.

We stayed for a Murder/mystery event. Acting was very amateurish, and actually quite boring. Food served was mediocre. Our room was at the furthest point away from facilities, which was a really long walk.. Room was okay, everything worked, but a little tired. Breakfast was apalling!! No eggs, bacon, coffee or hot water for ages, toast took 6 minutes to cook - need some new toasters I reckon. Staff were in general okay, but full of excuses for the poor service.

David Hartzig, General Manager at The Olde Barn Hotel, responded to this review
Thank you for yor feedback. Our murder mystery events are very succesful and we have used the same company for many years and I am sorry this was not to your liking. We have sadly had a few staffing issues of late at breakfast and I can only apologise that this impacteed your stay with us.

The rooms were clean and comfortable and looked like they had been recently refurbished. The health spa and gym were great and enjoyable to use. The breakfasts were excellent and we would say the bar food was average - we didn't eat in the restaurant so can't comment on that. All the staff were very friendly helpful and professional.

"Rather disappointed this time"

3
Pabluchin, Sudbury, United Kingdom 26/08/2021

Stayed again on the amazing Travelzoo deal this month, but while comfortable enough we were rather disappointed this time - it seems to have got a bit shabbier over the past couple of years, and staff were clearly under pressure - probably largely due to arrival of a coachload of seniors from Sussex. We were most surprised to see the complete lack of COVID caution amongst these holidaymakers - no mask-wearing in the hotel and no social distancing for the buffet breakfast, and on the two mornings that we had breakfast only one of the restaurant staff (a young man) was wearing a mask. Even though we have been double-vaccinated, this made us rather uncomfortable. With infections on the rise, this surely requires attention by management??? Not sure if we will be returning in the future after this experience, which is a pity.

"Great break overall"

ukmary, Stevenage, UK 25/08/2021

I booked this hotel for a two night break for our wedding anniversary. A few days before we were going, I found out that my granddaughter and her partner were staying there a couple of days before us. I contacted the hotel and arranged for a note to be left in their room with a message to say to 'Have a drink on us' and paid the hotel for them to have a drink at the bar. My granddaughter text me t say that they had arrived ad that their room was lovely but didn't mention the 'drink'. I emailed the hotel and received a reply that evening, apologising but they had forgotten to leave the note. However, my granddaughter had just been to reception and they told her about my message. Consequently, my first impression was that they weren't very organised. We checked in, chose from the evening menu and went to our room. It was a lovely large room and everything was very clean. We arrived at the restaurant for our 8 o'clock booking but had to wait about ten minutes for a table. When seated, a waitress asked for our room number and asked if we would like a drink. This was served and our starter followed. Our main course followed but my food was not served with Lyonnaise potatoes that I had ordered as per the menu. The restaurant was very chaotic. They seemed very short staffed. We asked a tall waiter for bread rolls and water (which every other table had) but they never materialised. Our dessert was served and I was asked if I wanted cream, I declined. The waitress went away without asking my husband if he wanted cream. Tables were not cleared/cleaned promptly. The whole lack of service spoiled our anniversary dinner. Breakfast the following morning was even more chaotic. I found a table to sit at but it hadn't been laid correctly and the table was very sticky, it clearly had not been cleaned. I asked a waitress if we could have some cutlery and could she clean the table as it didn't look like it had been cleaned from the previous evening. She snapped at me that we were the fourth people at the table that morning. I declined to say that it should have been cleaned ore thoroughly. Replenishment was a major issue. Most of the hot items needed replenishing but it was so slapdash. i.e. when fresh eggs were brought in, you had to wait for hash browns, waiting still longer for beans and tomatoes. There was a queue of people waiting for clean coffee cups and for the bread to be replenished. Then there was a wait for the yoghurts and fresh fruit. The evening meal was a bit more organised than the previous evening but still fell short of the service that I would expect. Breakfast on the second morning was a completely different story. It was hard to believe that it was the same restaurant with the same staff. All this was because of a gentleman whose name I believe was Lloyd (spelling?). He greeted us on arrival, apologised in advance that there was no orange juice as the order hadn't arrived (which is out of the control of the hotel). Lloyd seated us a freshly cleaned and laid table and asked if we had eaten in the restaurant before to make sure that we knew where everything was. His eyes were everywhere, making sure that everything was replenished before it needed to be, ensuring tables were cleared, cleaned and re-laid promptly. It was all an oasis of calm. I just wish that Lloyd had been on duty at each of our meal times as he ran the restaurant with a smile on his face and eyes that anticipated everything, giving you a good dining experience. The staff that we encountered were friendly. The food that we had was of a very good quality. On check out, I was asked about our stay and presented with the bill. I explained all of the above and pointed out that one of the drinks that I had ordered in the restaurant was not on the bill. The receptionist explained that they were short staffed. She thanked me for pointing out the error in the bill and wouldn't charge me for it or the other drink that was on the bill. Following her advice that they were short staffed in the restaurant, my criticism may be a little harsh. Would I return to this hotel? Yes, I certainly would. The grilled salmon with pea risotto with creamed spinach was cooked to absolute perfection. I would return for that alone!

Once again even after a change of ownership the Olde Barn continued to impress. For the price we paid it was an excellent break. We have now been four times and always enjoy this hotel. It really does tick all the boxes with good food a really big pool and nice rooms and very friendly staff.

sally H, London, United Kingdom 18/08/2021

Just returned from a short break at the Olde Barn Hotel with friends and our dogs (3 couple and 3 dogs). We took advantage of an offer on Travelzoo and it was a bargain! The location (for us with dog walking) was not the best as you really need to get in the car to go anywhere but . we would highly recommend a visit to The Thorold pub in the village. Unfortunately they don't serve food on a Monday or Tuesday, The food and drink in the hotel was fine and plentiful. The staff are all very friendly and helpful and we would particularly like to mention Jane who worked very hard at breakfast to accommodate our dogs - making sure they had sausages for their breakfast - and serving us in a separate room away from the restaurant. All in all a very pleasant stay!

"Lovely staff"

Jane from the breakfast staff was particularly helpful and nice and suggested some places to visit . Also the breakfast manager was extremely helpful and friendly . Another special mention goes to Lexi , who was very helpful , funny and lovely and also 10 out of 10 for the bar staff and reception and the ypung lady at the Spa !, Thank you all very much for all your help and effort!

"Stay in Lincoln"

allane1272021, Manchester, United Kingdom 17/08/2021

Hotel is in agreat place if you want peace and quiet ( which we did !) - It is about a 30 minute drive to Lincoln through beautiful countryside. The hotel is clean, plenty of parking, and the room was great. The only thing which let it down was the serivice at dinner, which was disorganised. There food was really good, but a number of diners complained that they had been waiting for some time between courses. I am guessing this is down to a lack of staff due to Covid, and therefore perhaps I should not be too critical. The staff at the desk are great, and were really helpful - we will probably stay again.

David Hartzig, General Manager at The Olde Barn Hotel, responded to this review
Thank you for taking the time to review us. We are very much impacted by the labour shortages in our industry and of course losing staff as a result of track and trace, thank you for your understanding. I look forward to welcoming you back in the future.

"Understaffed"

CheshireCat16, Cuddington, United Kingdom 16/08/2021

We stayed here with friends for a 2 night break. Check in was quick. As we were having dinner on the first night as part of the deal we were given a menu and asked to pre order which we found strange. However all became clear in the restaurant. There were very few tables occupied and only 2 waitresses. Our starters came quickly which were really good. Then we waited 45 minutes for our main. The waitress came over to apologise as one of the mains was unavailable and offered us a round of drinks on the house in way of an apology. She told us service was slow as she was also waiting on in another room which was holding a murder mystery event. We asked for vinegar and apple sauce which she went to get but never returned! We eventually got our desserts and finished our meal after 2.5 hours! The bedroom was clean and comfortable with a four poster bed. The bathroom had both a bath and shower. Breakfast on the Saturday was chaotic and there wasn't enough room to seat everybody in the restaurant. Yet again due to lack of staff. We ate out breakfast in the bar which was fine. Breakfast consisted of cereals, fresh fruit, toast and full English. The food was very good just a shame it couldn't have been better organised. There was a nice pool with steam room and sauna which weren't too busy. All in all a pleasant stay although we felt sorry for the waiting on staff as no management appeared to roll their sleeves up and muck in.

David Hartzig, General Manager at The Olde Barn Hotel, responded to this review
Thank you for your review. I took over as General Manager earlier this week. Sadly we do not appear to have the staffing required and with absences due to track and trace this is casusing even more issues. The next few months there will be many positive changes and I hope that you would consider staying woth us once again.

We have passed this hotel many times and often thought how handy it would be to stay there being so close to our destination. So when we finally got the opportunity we booked for 4 nights as a family of 4. When we arrived the front reception area was very nicely decorated and we thought we were in for a treat - oh how we were disappointed when we got to our room! The room was very dated, very cramped and not very clean at all. There were sweet wrappers down the side of the bed and the whole room was stale. We ate in the bar area and the tables were sticky. The staff tried their best but to us it looked like no one was in charge and there were definitely not enough staff. We paid a lot of money for 4 nights and will not be returning any time soon.

Having read some of the bad reviews of this place we were rather concerned about our forthcoming visit. However, we were very happy with our stay. We had a lovely large room, as big as any we have stayed in. We had a large bathroom with two sinks, a bath and a walk in shower. there was everything needed in the room including hostess tray and large TV. Everything was beautifully clean. The only fault one could find with the room was that there was no view, but this did not trouble us. The food in the restaurant was very good indeed and the service was good too. What more could one require at such a fantastic price. Excellent value. Thank you.

"Ok"

Tatic2010, East Sussex, United Kingdom 27/07/2021

The hotel is ok, we stayed as we found a really cheap voucher so it was good value for money. As other comments mention the place does look a bit tired and dated, the bathroom has a separate bath and shower which is convenient. The main issue in the bathroom is the shower being ‘walk-in' so when you're done showering the whole floor is drenched. The bed/ pillows were quite uncomfortable, hard and deflated. Unfortunately we stayed during the heatwave and the hotel had no aircon, there was no offer of a fan but we also didn't ask for one as we brought our own in preparation. The staff were pleasant and helpful. We had a dinner included in our reservation, the portions were really large however the quality wasn't the best. Breakfast was included and again was Buffett style cooked breakfast and continental. If the goal is to feel stuffed at the end you can easily do it here but if you actually want to enjoy the food then it's nothing special. The pool/jacuzzi/ sauna was really nice and quiet when we visited. The location of the hotel is good, lovely village a short walk away with a nice pub. Overall this hotel does the job.

We really enjoyed our stay at The Olde Barn and that was due mainly to the food, everything was lovely. Lincoln sausage and good quality products, cooked very well, in actual fact the best breakfast I have had in a Hotel for a long time. On the Saturday night we had the 3 course evening meal, my husband and I both chose different for every course, and you couldn't fault any of them. The rooms aren't wow but they are clean with everything you need. There is a village pub about 10 mins walk away, which is a co-operative whereby the villagers have shares in it. Again the food exceptional and the staff really friendly and helpful. Cant wait to go back.

some of the best food ive had, lovely pool and extra's, great staff and reception, but .... the whole building is looking a bit tired, needs a refresh, we had upgraded to executive but the 4 poster trimming at the top pelmet was dusty.

Gift voucher break, leisure pool, steam room and sauna very enjoyable, accommodation good. Evening meal had the sea bass it was gorgeous. Only comment we would make is to make the outside seats more comfortable, ie perhaps add cushions, but otherwise a great stay

On arrival we were allocated a superior double room, once in the room we found it to be absolutely disgusting, badly stained threadbare carpet with moth holes, and a hole covered by a wastebin, furniture outdated and badly marked, tv with only a few channels, paintwork in dire need of redecoration. We complained and was allocated a far better room albeit decor needed attention, the bed was the most uncomfortable thing we've ever had the misfortune to lay on the springs digging in and making a noise every time we moved. The restaurant is outdated hot and filthy, and the food we were given was scarce and sometimes inedible, prawn cocktail consisting of lettuce and prawns that smelt so strongly with limp buttered bread that we couldn't eat it, cheesecake that was warm and soggy, salad that was warm and slimy, its a wonder that we weren't ill, the pub down the road has excellent food. All in all this is the worst Hotel we've ever stayed in, poor service, poor uninterested staff, poor facilities, avoid at all cost or stay at your peril.

Just outside Grantham, The Olde Barn Hotel offers an excellent retreat. There's a spa comprising 15 metre pool, sauna, steam room, jacuzzi and gym. The village of Marston now has a Community run pub which is only half a mile away, so it is well worth a visit too.

"Great hotel"

Orangefarm, Lancashire, United Kingdom 23/07/2021

The bedroom was excellent. It was clean and well appointed. The bed was comfortable. The room contained a TV, tea, coffee and biscuits as well as a hairdryer and an iron and ironing board. There was a desk and chair with a well positioned electrical socket to make using a laptop easy. The desk had plenty of drawers for storage. There was also a full length mirror. The food served in the restaurant was delicious. The service was excellent. There is ample parking. The hotel is easy to get to as it is just off the A1. There is free internet throughout the hotel (although it seemed rather slow).

"Disappointing stay"

2
GaryandGrumpy, Leeds, United Kingdom 22/07/2021

Preordering of the dinner enabled the kitchen staff to preprepare our evening meal. It was a disaster. Dreadful lamb dish overcooked and tough served tepid. Fresh fruit salad turned out to be a chopped up apple which was dried up and brown. When I told the waiter this was unacceptable he just removed my plate without comment. We were not the only couple complaining that night. The following night we tried to book elsewhere but found the local places were all closed or full. We ended up eating in the bar which was much better as the food was prepared freshly and served by two men who knew what they were doing. Very disappointed in the food . Our room was basic but clean although the TV was very small.

Good value for a travel zoo offer. Hotel bedroom was fine and meals ok. However the exterior of the hotel needs tidying - cigarette butts sweeping up, etc. Restaurant needs upgrading urgently - pictures on walls need taking down and replacing with a few reflecting the area around the hotel rather than Paris!! It also needs redecorating and curtains removing.

Andrew Borland, General Manager at The Olde Barn Hotel, responded to this review
Thank you for your feedback. I am pleased you found your stay and offer good value. I note your comments on tidying up the external areas and will pass your comments on upgrading and refurbishing on to the owners. Thank you again for your review.

"Hotel needs to be closed and refurbished"

1
helenkidd, St. Albans, United Kingdom 04/07/2021

Having booked the Olde Barn on a Travelzoo offer, our expectations were not very high. We just wanted somewhere that was clean and quiet which could provide an edible meal/breakfast served with a smile. Unfortunately, the Olde Barn was lacking in most of those expectations. Firstly the positive was that our room was clean, comfortable and quiet. Apart from that, the whole hotel needs either to be pulled down or closed for a complete renovation. In my opinion, it should not be open. On arrival, we were greeted by a very miserable looking receptionist who could not offer anything more than confirmation of the time we had booked for dinner and that due to Covid we had to choose our meal and let them know in advance. As previously described, our room was clean and fairly comfortable but is in need of a complete refurb. We then took advantage of the hotel "spa" and went for a socially distanced swim. The "health club" is okay but again resembles more of a school swimming pool than a hotel "club". After our swim and clean up we went for our included dinner. This is where the hotel gets even worse. If you like 1980s/90s decor (i.e hasn't been decorated since then) then you will love it. The tables are tiny and sticky and everything from the cutlery to the plates needs replacing. Probably the worst part for me (apart from the food) is the presentation of the staff. Without exception, every member of staff was wearing clothes at least two sizes too small and looked like they hadn't washed their hair (or clothes) for quite some time. I really am not a person to be so judgemental but was gobsmacked at the presentation of the waiting staff. It would be so-easy/cheap to buy a job lot of black trousers and white t-shirts and give them to all the staff. I have never been anywhere where this was so apparent. The food itself was at best work canteen food. It was edible but pretty poor. Breakfast was okay i.e. edible but the one thing that let them down here is when the brought my husbands full English out too early as he was still eating his grapefruit so they took it away and 15 minutes later brought back the same breakfast, heated up with a rock hard fried egg!!! Apart from the internal decor, the outside areas are extremely shabby with broken tables and chairs and neglected grounds. I really expected Victoria Wood (RIP) to appear at any time. I am sorry Olde Barn management but you should really be ashamed of this standard. I would very quickly call Alex Politzi for some help.

Andrew Borland, General Manager at The Olde Barn Hotel, responded to this review
Thank you for your review. I am very sorry that we did not meet your expectations and that you did not enjoy your stay. I am pleased you found the bedroom clean and comfortable. I shall review all your comments on operations issues, and will forward to the owners for their consideration. Thank you again for sharing your experience.

Oh dear after my wedding at Allington Manor all weekend, we were given a 2 night stay in the this hotel with afternoon tea. Where do I start? Staff are amazing I will say this for the hotel. However some of the entrance has been overhauled...but the hotel is looking very tired, weeds, paint jobs, and the restaurant needs a huge decorating job on it. Breakfast was good, dinner in the restaurant not good. Please if you are going to serve salad on a plate too please make sure you serve fresh salad and not salad that is on its way out. Also ham terrine (not good) was served up with dorito's chilli dip, no bread offered with it, and the risotto I had afterwards was glued together no seasoning. The afternoon tea was just awful too. Frozen éclairs, wafer thin ham, and cakes and scones from packets. Second night was eat in the room bar meal. Have to say the burger and chips were a big improvement on the restaurant food. Room was standard. Bed ok but mattress starting to go and room was clean, but cobwebs and spider in the corner of the room which made me think that it had been cleaned quite well, but not not been slept in for some days, so maybe should check your rooms before guests coming in. The only reason I gave two stars was because this hotel has the most polite and helpful staff and put some other chained hotels to shame even...come on owners you could be trebbiling your income if you improved things at this hotel as the building is a lovely old place but needs the due care and attention it deserves.

Booked through a Travelzoo deal which was good value for money as it was for two nights B and B with dinner on the first night. Restaurant was busy, especially for breakfast, but staff were very busy trying to cope. Breakfast was good and dinner was acceptable but slightly limited in choice. Internet in room was poor and kept dropping out but all in all, a good break in an interesting part of the country.

Rob F, Rochdale, United Kingdom 21/06/2021

We stayed at the Olde Barn hotel for two nights. We had a travelzoo offer. Basically we can say we enjoyed our stay but there are several issues with this hotel which need to be resolved. On the whole the staff were polite and helpful. We dined in the hotel restaurant on the first night. Food was reasonably good but we had a long wait for our main course. Second night we went to the Thorold in the village. Breakfast was ok but not a lot of choice. Both mornings we went in early so didn't have a problem with having to wait for our breakfast. It seems others did who went in 8.30ish. Our room was ok, partially refurbished. We had a new bed which was very comfortable, decorated nicely but still had tired looking pine furniture. We were told some rooms are fully refurbished some partially like ours but some have not been refurbished at all. The bar and lounge areas are smart enough but the main restaurant looks really outdated. We enjoyed the leisure centre, luckily having a visit each day. The main disappointment in my opinion was the outside areas. There are two internal courtyards which both looked tatty with furniture that needed either varnish applying or replacing. Also there are plenty of picnic type tables around the outside of the hotel which needed attention. Also lots of weeds around the parking areas. Obviously this hotel needs money spending to bring it to a better standard, if this was done it could be a great hotel. Nice location not far from the A1 but no traffic noise.

Andrew Borland, General Manager at The Olde Barn Hotel, responded to this review
Thank you for your feedback. I am pleased you enjoyed your stay. I do take note of all your comments, especially the points raised with the outdoor areas. Some we shall action straight away and the others I shall raise with the owners. I thank you again for your constructive review and hope you will consider returning to us at some point in the future.

"Basic Hotel"

3
KimPS548, Leicestershire, United Kingdom 20/06/2021

Mediocre with no frills. Very busy hotel but very basic accommodation with just the basics provided. Meal in the restaurant was bland and tasteless and the waiting staff didn't really seem to be able to cope. The hotel did however have good COVID-19 rules in place and you definitely did feel safe with regard to this. We definitely won't be returning as we prefer a hotel to be a bit more comfortable with a few more touches of luxury. However if it is just somewhere to lay your head that you need then this will fit the bill.

Andrew Borland, General Manager at The Olde Barn Hotel, responded to this review
Thank you for your review. I am pleased you enjoyed aspects of your stay, especially the safety factor, but sorry that you will not return. However i do understand that you would prefer a higher grade hotel, and thank you again for your feedback.

"Sad"

3
cazw20, Bath, United Kingdom 18/06/2021

The hotel is dated and very tired looking. OK inside and room was spacious and comfortable. However the outside is so tatty. Lots of weeds. Uneven and broken paving slabs. Tables very worn. Don't know why the outside tables have not been varnished and plants put in hanging baskets. So sad to see what could be a lovely hotel being left to go to ruin.

Andrew Borland, General Manager at The Olde Barn Hotel, responded to this review
Thank you for your feedback. I am pleased you enjoyed many aspects of your stay, but sorry you were disappointed by the general upkeep and maintenance of the exterior areas. I shall address the issues you have raised that are within my remit and will pass the comments on to the owners. Thank you again for your review.

"Lacking maintenance but still an enjoyable stay"

Mike S, ENGLAND 16/06/2021

Just back from a two night stay courtesy of Travelzoo. Thought I saw somewhere that the hotel had been refurbished; saw no sign of it. First night the shelf in the room containing tea and coffee split. Daren't touch it thereafter; loads of other space anyway. Scruffy sitting out square in the middle of the hotel. Furniture covered in bird droppings and bits of plastic not cleared on a tatty piece of ‘artificial turf'. Didn't concern me much but you can't help noticing these things. Chairs in the bedroom resembled those normally found in an office. No air con in bedroom-uncomfortably hot on first night. Now the good bits: Cheap stay with meal on the first night –the tasty beef just fell off my fork. Massive room and bed. Bathroom had 2 sinks! Nice big towels though a bit stingy on the shower gel; like wise with the tea and milk, good job only one of us drinks tea. Modern TV. Friendly and helpful staff. Good selection of beer and lager. Obliging with my requests for ice. Plenty of parking space. Good sized swimming pool. Don't get me wrong I thoroughly enjoyed my stay and would stay here again, but just looks a bit tired, maybe due to short staffing. Staff run off their feet in the breakfast room maybe due to busload who arrived on Monday evening.

Andrew Borland, General Manager at The Olde Barn Hotel, responded to this review
Thank you for sharing your experience with us. I am pleased you enjoyed your stay overall, but am sorry that some maintenance issues spoiled your stay. I shall look into each point you have raised and remedy wherever possible. Thank you again for your feedback and I look forward to welcoming you back in the future

"You get what you pay for"

User 15/06/2021

Bought deal through wowcher. Whilst we were told before could only have a 45 min slot in the leisure centre, we didn't even stay that long. Very tired looking place. Service at dinner was good, although at breakfast we sat for 30 minutes waiting to be served. Wasn't even acknowledged. The majority of staff were friendly, although their appearance should have been more professional. Staff for evening meal in white shirt/blouse and black trousers then wearing trainers. Wasnt a great look. Waiter at breakfast with long hair and not tied back when working around food not great. Room clean with everything we needed just shabby. Nice outdoor spaces could be utilised better with a general tidy up, weeding etc. Hotel has lots of potential to be a very nice place, just shame some of it doesn't look like its had anything done to it for 30 odd years. Very dated restaurant and bar area.

"Needs significant refurbishment"

3
User 14/06/2021

Purchased a night here as a travelzooo offer. Very cheap deal so was not expecting too much- just remember that you get what you pay for. The room was generally fine just a little tired and outdated as we expected, and the meal was okay. The setting was not what we would choose for an evening drink returned straight to the room rather than spending any more time around the hotel. This hotel would really benefit from some significant refurbishment however this would be a huge project. Okay for a very cheap one off stay but not likely to be a place that you'd return to for another visit.

Andrew Borland, General Manager at The Olde Barn Hotel, responded to this review
Thank you for your review. I am pleased you enjoyed your stay overall, and note your comment on refurbishment which I shall pass to the owners. Thank you again for feeding back.

"Great Staff and food in a Dump of a Hotel!"

1
peteskinner2015, Bexley, United Kingdom 11/06/2021

We booked a superior room. The first room we were allocated was a disabled room 802 which they insisted was superior. If this is true I wouldn't want to see an inferior room! The next room seemed OK but the shower door was broken & fell off on my head, the bathroom had mould & a cracked sink. My wife found a half used tube of medical ointment by the curtains, the table was damaged. Every member of Staff we interacted with could not do enough. They were run off their feet and did not deserve to have to work in a Dump like this. The food was good & the price we paid on a travel zoo deal was the only thing that made it worth staying

"Shocked at the slave labour wages paid to teenage table service staff at the Olde Barn Hotel"

2
Pytangua, Birmingham, United Kingdom 11/06/2021

We had a nice stay at this hotel until by chance we discovered that Best Western has a policy of employing lots of under-18s at £4.65 per hour - which is less than half the adult minimum wage. Yet they do exactly the same jobs as adult staff and are on zero hours 'contracts' with no job protection at all. This seriously affected our enjoyment of the experience as we saw these teenagers working very hard, overworked at breakfast and yet keeping a smile on their face.

Booked this deal via Travelzoo, and was very happy with value for money. The hotel is not the Ritz, but The staff were great and the standard of the food was more than adequate. There are some lovely walks around Marston and some nice village pubs nearby.

"Unpleasant experience"

User 07/06/2021

We had a very unpleasant stay via a Wowcher deal. Food unenjoyable and inedible. Harassed by several flies in the restaurant, when raised with the staff, they said yes we know this is the worst table for it. We then found the fly issue was throughout the hotel, there were hundreds of them! Everywhere! The service of the staff was very disorganised and the staff lacked any customer service. Rooms smelt of drains. Taps kept running in the night. Shower floods the bedroom. Definitely won't be returning.

Great price, hotel is a little dated, and old fashioned. The staff are friendly, very accommodating and helpful. Our visit was under covid conditions and dinning was a seated service instead of buffet which meant breakfast service was a bit haphazard and disorganised, the breakfast itself was good and there was plenty of it on offer. Rooms were super hot which made it was a little difficult to sleep, but that's weather related. All in all a pleasant visit.

The hotel itself is quite nice, there were a lot of mosquitos however, the breakfast service for us was terrible, we had two breakfasts, on the first day we sat at the far end of the restaurant and waited to be served, it took half hour for anybody to come to us, in the meantime many more people came in after us but got served, on the 2nd morning we decided to sit nearer the entrance and in the end we had to complain because yet again people were coming in well after us but got served first, they really should have a ticket service so people know where they stand.

Recently stayed at the lovely hotel. The staff were extremely friendly and welcoming. Due to Covid-19 restrictions the staff in the dining rooms had to provide table service which slowed down the breakfast service. We were gifted a short break to a dog friendly hotel. We chose this hotel and stayed for 2 nights. First impressions were great , the reception area was lovely and modern , beautifully decorated as was the library room . However upon entering our room, we were soon very disappointed - the room was small and very dated , there were big black marks on several areas of the dirty looking carpet and there was a reasonable sized hole in the carpet too . Reception were willing to provide us with a different room to which we moved . This was much cleaner but nothing special . We decided to stay until we came to use the shower and could only get scalding water out of it , we could not turn the temperature down at all and it was just too hot to use . Reception couldn't resolve the problem so again we had to move rooms . This time we were upgraded to a superior room and this was lovely . Beautifully decorated , large comfy bed and nice and modern . The hotel seems to be in two halves - part which is lovely and modern and nicely decorated and the other which is dated , shabby and in need of refurbishment. Breakfast time was chaotic , we were told to sit at any table but there seemed to be no order in which the staff served guests. There was a long wait for anyone to take your order and then a further wait for any food or drinks to be delivered , however people who arrived after us were served before us - seemingly no order at all . Staff were all extremely helpful and very friendly and welcoming , all working hard , couldn't fault them at all . We enjoyed our stay , the hotel could be made amazing with some money spending on it - such a shame it didn't live up to our first impressions.

First impressions a little run down on arrival to the room there were half eaten biscuit in with the tea/coffee supplies. Breakfast was poorly ran the 1st morning we went down numerous people around us sent food back. Afternoon tea booked for 16:00 turned up in a brown take away bag so then had to wait till it went back and got sorted as we didn't want take out got it at 17:10. Ordered room service for 09:00 breakfast had to call reception at 09:50 to ask where it was they called back at 10:00 to ask for our order as they had lost it... arrived at 10:25 no hash browns and under cooked eggs. Also was not informed on booking that the sauna and steam room would not be open. The bed was super comfortable though.

"wowcher offer"

User 25/05/2021

For a wowcher offer, it was brilliant value for money and would definitely go again. Review in more detail Staff in all areas were extremely helpful and friendly which was lovely (cleaner and smarter uniforms would be nice). They kept apologizing for delays which wasn't necessary due to the current conditions but they were all very polite. Spa - you can only have 45 minutes including getting changed to enable all guests to use the facilities. This was perfectly understandable in the circumstances. We were lucky that the other 3 people in the pool area with us were friendly and asked each other if they wanted to use the jaccuzi so everyone got their turn in the short time. Bedroom - nice rooms and very spacious. Unfortunately we had a room where the drains were very smelly in the bathroom. Ordinarily, I would have asked to move rooms but given that the hotel has hardly been used in a year, this could have contributed to the problem. Was fine if you kept the bathroom door shut. Food - breakfast was delicious. Best fry up we've had for a bit. Evening meal was nice, very small portions including only getting one roast potato which made me laugh but again, it was a voucher deal so can't complain. Overall, a lovely stay in a nice hotel

"ideal short break"

4
User 21/05/2021

we just enjoyed a very good short break at The Olde Barn Hotel in Marston Lincs. Our check in was quick and efficient and the room was spacious , with a very comfortable bed and a full ensuite. The walk in shower was particularly good with lots of hot water. The evening 3 course menu was a very reasonable £20 for well cooked and presented food. there was a choice of 4 for each course. 1 or 2 courses were offered at a reduced price. Breakfast was good. Bar meals were also offered. There was a pleasant lounge area called the library. Staff were pleasant and helpful.

"Fairly satisfied, a few niggles which were mostly ratified quickly"

4
katethom27, Birmingham, United Kingdom 20/05/2021

We stayed 2 nights. With both breakfasts, they missed items off which were asked for with the cooked breakfasts, however these were ratified quickly. Had to queue up 20 minutes to get into restaurant one morning. There were 11 people in the queue when we got there. It would appear they needed a bigger room for meals. One towel was dirty in the room when I arrived. This was quickly changed at reception. Otherwise excellent value for money. Would use the hotel group again.

"This place is OK"

4
glynjt, Bristol, United Kingdom 19/05/2021

I'm torn between 3 and 4 for this review, so let's be generous, since the staff on the whole are pretty good. The surrounding area is glorious and there is a small village - Marston, just up the road. Our room was OK with a jacuzzi bath and generous bathroom. It had the smallest TV I've seen in a hotel, probably about 15" - the size of a laptop screen, so didn't use that. It had tea and coffee making facilities with an ironing board and iron. I'd recommend that the hotel provides more tea bags etc. but this seems to be an all too common practice. We had breakfast and one evening meal and the food was good. We stayed the first day after hotels were officially able to have guests in May 21, so perhaps the staff were a little rusty. The check-in was fast, but turned out not to be efficient. We booked a swimming pool slot at a time that turned out to not exist. We were given the wrong room number, which could have been embarrassing if we had gained entry to another guests room! No wifi password was given. The dining room staff and bar staff are friendly and efficient although it can take a bit of time to be served at busy times. If you want an evening meal, it is best to book in advance or go to eat at the bar, which was fine. We booked a swimming pool slot at a time that turned out to not exist. This was a problem at the reception, so when we turned up, we couldn't swim. However, Will, the pool chap, went beyond the call of duty, ringing round guests who had booked to check if they were still swimming. He then called us to say he had found a slot. I would recommend that management gave him a pay rise. In these covid times, you should check if the spa facilities are operating. When we visited only the pool and jacuzzi were available. Also the pool slots were limited, probably due to the hotel severely limiting the numbers (in my opinion). Don't just turn up if you want value for money, as the price we paid through booking.com was significantly lower that the advertised rates at reception. Overall, a fine place to stay. Friendly staff who go the extra mile and have time to give advice. Clean comfortable room with good food. Good wifi. Good value for money. Once we are done with covid, the spa facilities should be more available. Hope this helps.

Spotless, comfortable, well equipped and run by Zoe, who could not have been more helpful, even though we had to postpone our trip more than once due to lockdown. Thoughtful extras provided on arrival. Handy for Isle of Purbeck, Lulworth and local pubs for food. Highly recommended.

Well presented inside and out and nice staff, rooms a bit dated but very clean. Bed very comfy but no hot water at shower, didn't have time to tell staff so managed without. Plenty of spacious parking and hotel in lovely situation and quiet. Beware if you take a dog, no mention of it but it's an extra £15.

"Second Time Stay. Massive Improvement since 2018"

5
WarringtonBaz, Warrington 06/11/2020

I stayed here back in September 2018. The room I was allocated last time was a little strange, small TV and sloping roof... This time however, I was allocated room 805 (My business partner got 806) Check-in was very efficient, contact free and covid safe with screens in place. Masks are compulsory in all public areas as it should be and the staff I spoke with were lovely and very helpful The room was spacious and clean, although I was a little confused as to why the wardrobe was right next to the doorway into the room as there is very little room here (see the photo below) Excellent sized TV with all the freeview channels and two single beds (I'm sure I booked a double, but no matter) the bed I slept on was very springy ... as in VERY springy... but it was comfortable and I slept like a very loudly snoring baby. The bathroom had an amazing walk-in shower and a deep bath tub which was just what was needed after a long day of work and driving. Just one criticism, there are no grab rails around the bath and as it is very deep, it could be an issue with someone who isn't quite as steady on their feet as I am when getting in and out... Lovely bath smellies too.. I opted for Room service which was tomato and red pepper soup, rolls with butter, and a Doombar ale pie and chips with a huge gravy boat of gravy. Food was amazingly nice considering some of the food on offer in other hotels at the moment. Piping hot, full of flavour (especially the soup which was to die for as they say) Breakfast the next morning was equally as nice. I opted for toast with sausage and beans (must be the old cowboy in my genes) All in all a lovely hotel and lovely staff. Doing their utmost to keep things as normal as possible during this pandemic... thank you all

"A lucky escape thanks to Covid"

stevehariboharriman, Mansfield, United Kingdom 30/10/2020

We were bought a Buyagift voucher as a Xmas present last Xmas and booked a night at the Olde Barn for March. Covid lockdown caused postponement the first time - fair enough. The received a call from the hotel around a week before the revised date in July, advising that they could no longer honour the booking and that we'd need to re-book (no reason given but at the time not a Covid risk). Today's booking was cancelled 15mins before check-in by the hotel due to last nights Nottinghamshire Tier 3 brand. Wouldn't have been a problem (a fair cop) but Tier 3 only 'advises' not to stay away - apparently 'management' deemed Tier 3 as 'lockdown'. Again, each to their own (opinion) but the frustration is the fact we'd travelled nearly an hour and were 6mins from the hotel. Reading some of the reviews on here, probably did us a favour as frustrating as the late cancellation was (by the hotel - not Boris). Didn't get to stay so can't comment on rooms, food, service, staff, etc but we're had the voucher redeemed by Buyagift and will not be using it here.

Andrew Borland, General Manager at The Olde Barn Hotel, responded to this review
Thank you for your comments. I am sorry that you booking was moved several times due to pandemic restrictions. I can undertsand your frustration at the eleventh hour cancellation and will review the process with our reservations team moving forward, but I can assure you that such measures are only taken in general interests of all guests and personnel. I hope you have an enjoyable stay when you do finally get to use your Buyagift break voucher.

Overall the stay was good. The one way system worked although there were some people that were not pulled up for not wearing masks. The pool was lovely and all areas were clean. If you are visiting any places of interest make sure they are open before booking, we ended up just walking the gardens as the houses we visited were closed.

"Bargain Break Trip"

3
EGTraveller, Sussex, England 02/10/2020

Reception is very inviting, despite COVID limitations, staff all very friendly and work hard. Hotel well laid out and rooms exceptional for the money - just a pity they had "problems with one of the boilers" so radiators never got more than warm. The bar was the only eating place in the evening and it was freezing, until we got them to get out electric heaters. The log fire is fake! Dinner was reasonable, but not particularly hot. Breakfast is served in the dining room (the old barn which is nice) and was hot, but service could be slow. Couldn't understand the management ruling that all hot drinks are served in paper cups (COVID)? and only paper cups are issued in the rooms, no glasses at all, only in bar?? No maid service during stay - fresh towels (useful to a decorator for rubbing down doors before final gloss coat) and tea/coffee etc available from reception in plastic sacks. Am sure it'll be a great place to stay once COVID is behind us. Full marks to the staff.

Andrew Borland, General Manager at The Olde Barn Hotel, responded to this review
Thank you for taking the time to share your experience. I am pleased you enjoyed aspects of your stay and found our staff helpful. I take note of your comments on dinner and breakfast and also the use of disposable cups, which I accept is slightly inconsistent when we use glass in the bar. I shall review that policy with the team , and will revisit food service with the relevant team. I alos note your comment on maid service - again thisn policy was introduced during the pandemic to avoid staff entering a guest room during their stay. This too will be reviewd with our head office in the near future. I do hope you will consider returning to us when you are next in the area.

"A nice hotel"

O8277SAsandrah, Bexleyheath, United Kingdom 24/09/2020

We arrived after dark but found ample parking. Prior to arrival there was good communication about hotel details - check-in and out times, covid restrictions etc and on check-in the one way flow was explained well to us. The hotel is very nicely decorated and our room was a good size and clean. We stayed with a Buyagift voucher for dinner, bed and breakfast. Dinner was in the bar - the food was good and table service easy - it was a Sunday night and fairly quiet in the bar but still a nice atmosphere. The 4 instead of 5 stars was for the breakfast service - the breakfast itself was ok but the service not so and it marred the end of our stay a little. Saying that I would recommend the place and would stay there again if I was in the area.

We used our buy a gift at this hotel. The room was spacious and very comfortable and clean. There was both a shower and a bath. The food was very good and the staff were all excellent. The Covid precautions were brilliant. THE SWIMMING POOL had graduated steps and was a real treat along with the Jacuzzi. Great socially distanced Hotel which doesn't spoil your stay but puts you at ease. Staff are so welcoming and friendly. Room was clean and had everything you'd expect. Loved that it had both a shower cubical and a bath tub. Bed was comfy and had a great night's sleep. Breakfast was tasty and good produce. Friendly staff serving the hot options. The location was ideal for where we wanted to be and is quite with not much in the immediate area. Probably the reason for the great nights sleep. Checking in and out times are also great. No one wants to rush about after their breakfast. We had an excellent stay and couldn't fault it.

Arrived at the Olde Barn Hotel on a 2 day break from buy a gift. Nice hotel but a bit remote. Room we were given we had to change as when I checked the bed there was a very large stain on it and also a hole in the side. Our room was changed straight away without any fuss. The new room was very nice, clean and quite big. The hotel was very good with the spacing for COVID with sanitisers everywhere. One disappointment was that when we arrived the bar wasn't open and the receptionist had to serve a drink but she couldn't use the pumps so we had to have bottled beer at extra cost! The restaurant was ok but I had the gammon which was very overcooked as was the bacon for breakfast. Didn't eat there the second night as found a restaurant in the small town which was a 10 minute walk away.

Just arrived home from a software and stitch retreat at The Olde Barn. This retreat should have happened in April but as lots of things it was cancelled until this weekend. Our group was apprehensive about visiting a hotel at this time but we couldn't have felt safer. All the staff were very attentive and our health and safety was their top priority. We could move about the hotel without any worries about having too many people around and all our meals were served in a small dining room. If anyone is considering visiting this hotel I can highly recommend it.

We were a group of 5 ladies on a sewing weekend. All of us are in the older age group & some of the group were concerned about our vulnerability to Covid but the hotel coped really well & we always felt completely safe. The food was excellent & we even had to ask for smaller portions. The rooms were clean , spacious very nice. We were made very welcome & nothing was too much trouble. It is difficult times for businesses , this is my third visit to this hotel but without a doubt will be booking again. For the price we paid it was excellent value for money

sassyjem, Stafford 28/08/2020

A one night stop over for us on the way to kings lynn. Extremely good value for a one nights stay. Our room was a great size with a fabulous bed and great shower room. The one way COVID safe route seems to work well. Overall though sadly the hotel does look very tired and a good bit of money would need spending. Loved the artwork on the walls though! We did pay for breakfast which at £20 for us both is a lot of money so I expected great things. Sadly the cold selection was poor and the cooked breakfast nothing special. Very disappointed with this but would stay at the hotel again.

"Not great"

happyincumbria, carlisle 26/08/2020

My husband and myself were gifted a 2 night stay with afternoon tea. We were travelling to visit our son and his family in Norfolk, so stopped hereto break the long journey. When checking in we arranged for the afternoon tea the next day. Room was big but very basic, really could do with updating. But it was clean. That night we had a meal in our he bar, yes it was just pub grub, but it was ok. The next day we decided to check out a day early, reason we were board, the hotel was in the middle of nowhere, the hotel ground were over grown and full of fag ends, and to top it off the pool was closed. We went down for our afternoon tea, which we were looking forward to as we had not had breakfast, the lady on reception said we didn't have one booked, on showing her our receipt, she mad a phone call then started rushing around. Then another couple turn up for there tea. Nothing for them as well. In the end we told the lady to box it up for us and we checked out early. Would I go back, sadly no. I do know they needed a refurbished and more staff but I guess that's all down to money.

I recently stayed here as part of a Buyagift Voucher. We had a 2 Course Meal included in our stay and a full English breakfast. The food was lovely and we had a really nice room. The Staff at this Hotel are all super friendly and we really enjoyed our stay here. It's situated in the quiet and relaxing Village of Marsden. Nice for walking, the Village has a nice Pub which we visited about 10 minutes walk away. I would recommend staying here.

shazpin, Boston, United Kingdom 21/08/2020

We are quite local to the area but needed a break away as husband been working very long hours during lock down . We chose the hotel as looked nice on the website and very conveniently located. On arrival ,friendly welcome explained the guide lines re vivid and had to wear mask on entry as expected . Was upgraded to a lovely super room (201) really clean , huge bathroom his and her sink units too . Loads of storage space. Iron and full size ironing board , tea coffee making facilities fully stocked . Although be side of vivid no room cleaning during our stay but totally understood this and thought as no problem . Hotel is running with Skelton staff but all are so lovely the young man and young lady working in the bar and breakfast room were so helpful and friendly and another lady on our 2nd night was also lovely . Restaurant not open for dinner , but we're offering a reduced menu in the bar and both nights was really nice food. Breakfast was continental help yourself to drinks , cereal, toast and pastries then also full English hot breakfast , or what ever your preferred choice of hot food and was really good . Yes it was quiet and spa not open yet but every precaution taken to make you feel safe, lovely staff, food and fab clean room . Just what the doctor ordered for husband not having a full day off since February , perfect . And thankyou to all at the olde Barn

"GET ME OUT OF HERE."

2
User 19/08/2020

I arrived, and although check in was a quick process, I found the lady to be quite dismissive in her attitude, whether that was only to me or not, I'm unsure. I had a large, spacious room, but the problem was, there were bugs in the corners of the room, a black beetle scrurried across my floor, so I actually had to hit it with a shoe, the also appeared to be some daddy long legs type of bug in the corner of my bathroom, next to where the bath meets the corner of the wall. There was a large chip in the bath, the shower wasn't fitted to the system it came with so I had to lift it down and shower, rather than stand under it, there seemed to be a forgotten cotton bud behind the cabinet next to the bed and the matching one in the bin in the bathroom. There was also a ceiling repair that had been done what looked to be recently because the patchwork paint was a telltale sign. I heard from other members of the hotel at the time that a fire alarm went off in the middle of the night also, which broke their sleep, and then prohibited them from sleeping again. I overall think the place needs a little TLC towards the back of the building, whereas the front is in tip top shape. It's what the eye can't see that they need to upgrade.

"Olde room and Olde food"

2
lucyCza, Maidstone, United Kingdom 16/08/2020

Visited post COVID midweek in August. First point of notice is that we were definitely in the old part of the Olde barn hotel, as our room was nothing like the lovely photos on the website, which was disappointing, yet did the job. Minimal enforcement of a one way system, when staff don't even follow it themselves which again is not impressive. Much like the food in the bar which looked and tasted defrosted and with minimal effort, along with little to none vegetarian options, would recommend eating elsewhere. Bar staff were really nice especially under the current circumstances and during the hot weather. Limited space to dine and not really worth the price when leisure facilities are not available.

"Software and Stitch Retreat"

User 16/08/2020

Well what can I say....not enough really. I have just stayed here from Thursday through Sunday on a sewing retreat. The hotel is open and running on fewer staff and amenities, however we could not have been more well looked after. There are sanitisers everywhere, the staff who are currently working are doing everything necessary to make the guests feel at ease in this current climate, observing social distance etc. I never once felt any risk! The food was from the bar menu and was very nice indeed, with plenty to choose from, we had all refreshments brought to our rooms as required. Andrew the hotel manager and Charlie the hotel deputy manager went out of their way to accommodate our little group, giving a lovely personal touch. I cannot say how much I have enjoyed my weekend here, a massive well done to all staff you are doing an amazing job to get us back to ‘normal' in these unprecedented times. Thank you all for a great weekend.

"Honest review from my second visit"

5
HPowell00, Clitheroe, United Kingdom 16/08/2020

I've been here Thursday till Sunday on a sewing retreat. Usually these retreats have 15 people but the hotel kindly let it run this time with just 4 of us. This is my second visit, I was last here in February. I enjoyed my stay then but this is about this visit. These are difficult times and I must admit, I was a little apprehensive. I need not have worried. There are sanitising stations everywhere, social distancing is very well organised. There are less staff as there are less customers but the service has been exemplary. The food this time has been off the bar menu but there is plenty of choice and it has been excellent. 2 of the ladies have had steak each night! Andrew, the Manager and Charlie (Deputy Manager) have made sure we have everything we need and lovely Lexi our waitress is great too. I highly recommend The Olde Barn and have felt safe but had a great time.

"Horrible weekend"

1
TraceyKeyingham, Keyingham 12/08/2020

The Old Barn is not ready to open after lockdown. The pool is not open, there was only one staff serving the whole hotel all weekend and the food is poor pub grub. The outside seating areas are filthy and overgrown. I would not have stayed the second night if we did not have plans in the area. The aircon did not work in our room and no maintenance on site or offer of an alternative room although the hotel was half empty. Soulless is my conclusion to the stay.

"Some very dated areas and rooms"

3
ack33cat, Mainland, United Kingdom 28/07/2020

It was fairly cheap to stay but the room was dated and we have stayed in much better at this price point. They are still getting up and running after the corona virus so facilities are very limited. I was concerned that the bathroom hadn't been cleaned properly with dust, hairs and spiders in the corners. I'm not sure why we were given a dated room when the pictures on the website show they have much nicer. Personally if I wasn't fully booked, I would fill my refurbished rooms first to avoid negative reviews. I think this place could be very nice and some of the public areas have been refurbished already. I hope they manage to get this place up to the standard of other best westerns we have stayed in.

"Dated and old"

We booked two night here after seeing the hotels website. As usual the website shows all the best bits, but unfortunately it's not quite like this. The restaurant is very dated and in need of redecoration. The set menu looked very dated and the bar menu was better and the food we had from this was well prepared and not over priced. Breakfast was good selection of self service food but at £10 each is about average price. The health club was ok, the pool a little cold the hot tub had too much chlorine causing me quite bad eye irritation and the mens changing room had a lake where the showers were not draining properly. Our room was nice, it was clean although the carpet did feel slightly sticky under foot. The bed was comfortable. We had afternoon tea and i give them a big thumbs up for as it was very tasty and generous and this is the main reason for an it's ok rating . If you want somewhere to sleep and a pool on is on your list then it would fit the bill, otherwise a premier inn etc would be a better choice.

My brother who has limited mobility recently visited the pool after purchasing a group on the staff were absolutely amazing with him. They allowed him to use the staff changing rooms as they were closer. They swapped the treatment rooms so they were nearer and made him feel so relaxed and welcomed. Well done guys not enough places show your consideration thank you.

"Another Brilliant Mr Bridge Weekend"

We thoroughly enjoyed our visit yet again to The Olde Barn where we have enjoyed many Mr Bridge weekends. We were greeted warmly on reception by Gwen who remembered us from previous visits. We had been upgraded to Executive rooms, which was a nice loyalty touch. Yes, the hotel could do with some financial investment in parts, but it was warm, friendly and very comfortable. The food in the restaurant was very good, with the sea bass excellent! All staff were most accommodating, helpful and friendly - special mention goes to Gwen and to Charlie and the lady cleaning our rooms. We have been coming here for over ten years and we are looking to book another bridge weekend there in the Autumn. All things considered, I recommend The Olde Barn as superb value for money. We will certainly be back again! Thank you!
