    « Nice rooms »

Stayed here on numerous occasions whilst visiting family. The rooms are nicely decorated and have always been spotless. Only had breakfast here once because we ate with family other days but it was lovely and had a lot of choice, cereals, fruit, toast and jams and cooked breakfast as well as hot drinks and juices. Staff on reception desk where friendly and welcoming.

    « Avoid this place ! »

Just spent an agonising 2hrs having lunch today with a roast dinner that looked and tasted like it had been picked up off the floor yesterday. Utter laziness in the kitchen serving parsnips with a solid core with skin on and lamb that had more fat than whale's midriff ! It was disgusting. On top of that and not the fault of the Birch hotel (although they could have intervened) was the group of people who turned up and decided to let their feral kids bring a football and play in the courtyard. Doors left open and incessant screaming non-stop ensured that we had a lovely fresh freezing chill flowing around and couldn't speak to each other over the noise. I cannot understand why parents think that it's ok to bring kids to a place like this and play football when surrounded by glass and ruining it for everyone else! Pathetic, stupid, ignorant people with zero common sense or judgement.

« ideal to tour or work in Sussex »

a great place to stay if touring Sussex - or an ideal base for work in the area - good breakfast - comfortable beds and good service all apply here - as do friendly staff and a good selection of food from the bar menu

    « Distinctly average.. »

Visited on business. First impressions? Reception slow and a little disorganised. The room basic, but clean. The food was good, the waiting staff were friendly but seemed a little overwhelmed by relatively few guests? Overall? Perhaps a little tired?

    « Ok for 1 night stay »

Hotel is ideally located in Haywards Heath with plenty of parking. It also has free WI-FI throughout the hotel which was great. The rooms are on the small side, however, the bathroom had been recently renovated and was really nice with a big shower head/bath. The only 2 negatives are the carpet was worn and tired and the room had not been cleaned very well around the beds - there were bits of god knows what all around the side tables next to the bed. There is NO LIFT either in the hotel so it can be a struggle for some but front desk were happy to carry up luggage. In summary, good value for money and handy for Haywards Heath but I wouldn't stay here for more than a night or two. One more thing - the woman who was on front desk in the morning really needs to learn some customer service skills as she didn't even acknowledge me checking out - too busy reading her paper!!!!

    « Clean and comfortable »

I had a ground floor double room for 2 nights which overlooked the car park. The room was impeccably cleaned with coffee making facilities and a TV with an abundance of channels available. (living in a foreign country this was a treat for me) the shower was fantastic with lots of available hot water. The bed was so comfortable I couldn't wait to get back in it. There was a vast choice for breakfast I just had fresh fruit and yogurt with a pot of black coffee but full English breakfast was available if you required it and was cooked to order. There is a computer available to all guests which allowed me to check in for my flight home. I never ordered from the bar or had evening meals here but if the cleanliness of all areas and the quality of breakfast were to go by then no doubt everything would be excellent. I was even given a take out breakfast as I had early checkout. Hot croissants banana and orange juice. You can select this on a card that is left in your room.

« Very well Managed Hotel »

For location and value for money when staying in Haywards Heath this is a clean and smart hotel that we would tell our friends about.very good cooked to order breakfast or buffet option and stylish bar.

    « Again very disappointing »

We decided to try this place once more, and were again let down. The Food was burnt when it arrived, and no one came back to ask if it was ok, and not asked if it was ok and no one to complain to. The spiced potato wedges were awful and were also burnt. I had a southern chicken burger. Burnt and buried in lettuce. Onion rings burnt also. Awful Only good thing was I asked for a coke and she told us it was Pepsi. Another no for us. Other people there had to search for someone to pay their bill. The girl who was looking after us also had to serve the restaurant and was stretched. She was lovely and my burnt offerings were not charged for. There is a phone apparently that you are supposed to call for service but I feel a sign should be on the tables to say such would be a good idea, As the bar is out of sight. Toilets were spotless and smelt lovely, they were warm also.

    « Great Hotel »

Beautiful hotel with pleasant and caring staff. A great location for visiting serveral other areas. Very comfortable beds and a good sized room and lovely clean bathrooms with bath and shower. Breakfast were good and had plenty of choice. Didn't get a chance to try the restuarant but the menu did look nice

    « An excellent hotel »

An excellent traditional hotel the staff on reception were very helpful, as the hotel does not have a lift, we required a ground floor room and they managed to accommodate us. We arrived very early as we travelled overnight and they allowed us into the room as soon as it was ready. The room we had was well equipped with an excellent bathroom. The bath however was to high to allow easy access for people with mobility issues and the use the shower is difficult if not impossible. I do not know if they have shower only rooms on the ground floor suitable for people with mobility issues. The bath was also made of plastic which creaked when you were showering and didn't feel very strong. Housekeeping were very helpful and cleaned the room early for us so we could get ready for a function. Evening meal was excellent and a good varied menu of both main meals and bar snacks are availiable. The bar is well stocked and reasonably priced with helpful friendly staff. The function we attended was well catered for, excellent service and all requests were dealt with professionally. The only complaint we have is the quality of the cooked breakfast, although the choice is varied. On the first morning we were waitress served the cooked breakfast, the sausages, black pudding and bacon had all been kept warm to long and were over cooked and dry, eggs were over cooked and the scrambled egg obviously not freshly made. The second morning was self service and the breakfast was in the heated trolley however the same applied and only scrambled egg served. The buffet bar has a good selection of cereals, fruit, yogurts, meats and cheeses to suit most requirements. Service by the staff was excellent. This is a very good traditional hotel with good parking, staff are attentive and exceptionally helpful, just improve the hot breakfast a very simple fix and it would be perfect. Highly recommended.

    « Best Western review »

Stayed on business. The hotel rooms are fine and the bathrooms have all modernised. Food to decent and the bar is fine for a drink. Would use on business but not for a weekend away. Could do with a gym or pool.

    « Charming old hotel »

The main building is dated from the mid 1880s. Lots of charming hardwood décor everywhere. Unfortunately the bar area is some form of neo-modern and totally cold. Our room was very nicely appointed but much too small. The dining room was over priced but there was not another decent restaurant within a reasonable distance.

« Wedding & night at the birch »

My dad got married here in August and travelling from London my husband and I booked a nights stay for us and our daughter. Upon arrival we were given the key card to our room straight away despite arriving a few hours before checking in time. Room wasn't overly big with the cot but had everything we needed for a nights stay. The wedding ceremony itself was lovely, it was held in the Sussex room which was very spacious and had a beautiful fireplace. We then moved to the Courtyard room for the sit-down wedding meal which was lovely, food was great and so was the wine. The staff couldn't do enough for you, they were so friendly. Then there was the reception also in the Courtyard room and the staff laid on a buffet once the evening guests had arrived. The following morning the hotel offered a wide range of choices for breakfast, cooked, continental and would even cook you something that wasn't on the menu if you wanted it. Overall it was a wonderful day and evening, I would recommend for a general stay and my dad and step mum said that they chose the best place to get married :)

    « Wedding night »

Stayed here on our wedding night and room was amazing. Service was very good and with a smile no matter what time at night. Breakfast was expensive but didn't put us off at all. Great bar open till late. Would recommend to anyone

    « "Best" Western - probably 2nd or 3rd Best »

Rooms are tiny, front of hotel is really noisy, make sure that the room you are given doesn't smell of stale tobacco before you check in. Plenty of parking, bars and restaurants within walking distance, staff very pleasant and polite. Ask if you want anything other than a single bed.

    « Comfortable »

I had a single room booked for me at the birch. The carpark is good and the reception check in was swift and efficient. The receptionist was very pleasant. The room was clean and well presented. The bathroom and shower were great. Free wifi. I ate in the restaurant which was ok, a bit average. I would book again but with a double room.

« Clean, comfortable, good value »

Quite a nice little hotel. Functional but very pleasant. The staff were friendly and professional. The restaurant served pub grub that wasn't fancy but very tasty. The rooms were very clean despite some of the soft furnishings and carpets being a little bit worn. I stayed during a mini-heatwave and was pleased that there was a fan provided along with iron. Very good for the price. Very handy for work but not the kind of hotel you hang out in for leisure!

    « Totally average! »

I stayed here for one night and everything about the experience was average/just above poor. Here are my opinions of this hotel: - I checked in about an hour early. I forgot myself and in all the rushing in the morning to get to the hotel, I ended up making good time on the motorway. I have no idea why the girl checking me in couldn't have simply said "we are delighted to be able to check you in as your room is ready!" Instead I got "you're early but the room is ready" I know I'm being picky but come on, whats happened to a bit of customer service, eh?! - I didn't get the impression there is a good manager in this place and I think they're under staffed. - I stayed in a single room and it was dated and a bit rough around the edges. It had 'splash' stains of something around the doorframe of the bathroom. I really don't want to think what they might be. The room was boiling hot when I got back to it that evening and there is no air conditioning. The bed was comfortable. - I do have to note that the wifi worked without any need to call reception. I'm always surprised at how hit and miss wifi in hotels can be. Keeping to the positives, car parking was very easy and it was free; the hotel was very easy to find. - The hotel feels a bit stuck in 1990. There is no lift but the receptionist asked if I needed help with my bags. - Ok, breakfast... There is a reasonably ok continental selection of cereals, toast, pastries and tinned fruit, etc. I ordered a cooked breakfast with two poached eggs. I waited about 25 minutes and my breakfast came looking under cooked and one egg was on my plate. The head waitress noticed as she brought it to me (she was really nice and rushed off her feet) and asked if I wanted the other egg, I said no, it'd take too long. Then I noticed that the breakfast was undercooked. She agreed, took it back to the kitchen and came back with a better cooked breakfast with (of course!) only one egg. Again. Whatever. Breakfast is £9 which is actually quite reasonable, and it tasted ok. My breakfast was cooked to order but after I ordered they were setting up a breakfast buffet. Weird. - After what felt like AGES in the restaurant I went to get my case to check out. No one was on reception (apart from the receptionist when I checked in and the waitress, I didn't see any other staff at all) so I left my key and left (you pay for your room upon arrival) I didn't expect anyone me to wish me a good day or to ask how my stay was. I wouldn't stay here again and I'd recommend that unless they've got a good deal running that's worth it to you, look for somewhere else. They need to raise their customer service game if the rooms remain in the condition they're in.

    « Clean & friendly »

I have just stayed for 1 week at the Birch, it is a lovely clean and friendly hotel. The room was a little on the small size but big enough, I found the bathroom was small or perhaps it should be called petit! At least it wasn't far to walk from the toilet to the sink or shower, you could sit on the loo and use everything! The room was very hot and to be fair the little desk fan supplied struggled to keep pace, although we don't get these temperatures very often over here and you can't blame the hotel. My only other gripe was the couple in the next room on Tuesday night, Mr & Mrs Stud muffin were rather noisy and if you are reading this I would have given you a round of applause if it hadn't been so early in the morning!

    « Pretty Good »

I stayed at the Best Western Birch Hotel last week. The hotel is around 1 mile 1.5 km from Haywards Heath Station and us ins fairly quiet road. When I arrived late around 22:00 there was lots is space in the car park which was handy. Check in was very fast and with a helpful receptionist. My room I the second floor was a standard size but disgrace a slightly odd smell, which I think we're the leaning products. Clean bathroom with a big shower and I bath. The bed also seemed short I'm only 176cm but I felt my feet were hanging off the end. I had a quick beer in the bar, no problems though a selection of local draught beers/ bitters would have been nice. Breakfast was excellent and started at 07:45. Tony's Tips. Free WIFI Good parking Don't buy 30" trousers when you are a 34" waist.

    « Weekend away »

This was our second visit to the birch and I requested a quiet room after our first visit a year ago was noisy , a wedding venue . So when I booked this time I requested a quiet room which we did have other than an inconsiderate couple in the room next door who didn't know how to close a door with the handle . I cannot fault the rooms ours was clean spacious and had everything we needed . The breakfast on both visits was lovely plenty of choice . All the staff from arriving in reception , restaurant and cleaners were very friendly and helpful . Would definitely stay again

    « Comfortable stay »

Stayed here for a family wedding in Lewes. Room was very clean and comfortable. Shower was a bit on the small side but was fine. Breakfast wasn't included in price which is why I only give 4 stars. It worked out expensive to add on breakfast so we didn't bother. Got something outside of hotel. Overall a nice hotel with good staff. Would stay again. Haywards Heath is a lovely town with nice individual shops. Very clean and tidy.

« 1 night stay with our dog »

We chose this hotel as it was advertised as dog friendly, our dog was allowed in our room but nowhere else. It was a very hot day and we booked a meal for 8pm. The only place we could eat was a small terrace at the side of the hotel, in the shade by this time, so effectively in the car park. Not really particularly pleasant! However the staff were all very friendly and helpful. Our meal was good as was our breakfast when it was cool enough to leave our dog in the car. The room was excellent. We enjoyed our stay but do feel that hotels need to be more explicit as to where dogs are allowed. Possibly a small section of the bar area could be made available.

    « Leisure Break »

good place to stay as we were visiting locally. We only used the room facilities and the internet. hotel clean, staff friendly overall very pleasant. On a main road but surprisingly it is not busy and though at the front of the hotel with the windows open it was peaceful, certainly whilst we were there.

« Get what you pay for »

Considerably cheaper than a Premier Inn but rooms were small and the menu very basic. Staff were very pleasant and helpful. Hotel Guests seemed to avoid the Restaurant, which was not a good recommendation.

« The Birch Hotel, Haywards Heath »

A quality hotel, with an old fashioned feel and traditional views on good service. The staff are first class and service is good. Dinner menu is straightforward and adequately cooked I always stay there on business and could not find many faults. I wouldn't consider it a family hotel, but it would be ideal for couples

« Did what it said »

Nice clean room, friendly staff, comfortable bed. Ate out so cant comment on food. Easy to find and convenient quiet location. Don't be put off by the hospital or the proximity of the main road no noise at all.

    « Lovely »

Stayed here for one night due to a family party nearby. Lovely, old fashioned hotel, big spacious stairways and hallways with big old fashioned mirrors, had a relaxed and pleasant feel to it. Good value for money. Breakfast was very expensive so we chose to eat out instead. Walk in shower was tiny and very hard to move around in. Comfy beds, quiet rooms, free wifi. All in all i would recommend it and we had a pleasant stay

    « Just One Night »

Staying for one night only we found it a relaxing experience. Our room was ready even though we arrived an hour early. The room was pleasant and very clean, beds were comfortable. Breakfast was excellent in the lovely restuarant. The building itself was interesting as it dated back to the late 1800s. Found all members of staff really friendly

Our lunch for four was very nice, good selection of Sunday roasts as well as several other options, including vegetarian. Staff were superb, making us feel very welcome. The restaurant was pleasantly quiet, considering the day. After a starter and a main course, we were really too full to try the nice selection of desserts.

    « THE BIRCH »

was given a postage stamp size room that overlooked the venting for the kitchen, Almost fell off the toilet when sitting down as the seat was loose. The shower head fell apart in my hand when I tried to adjust it, the floor creaked so bad I thought I was going to fall through.

« Rather average hotel with friendly staff »

I had booked a room for 3 nights online. The booking site showed the room as a twin bedroom but as I am single I expected to have enough room for myself. Arriving on a sundaynight I was told they only had a single room for me as the twin rooms were needed later in the week. I could have the twin room for one night but would then have to vacate it after the first night. I asked for the single room to be shown first before checking in. Some member of staff accompanied me upstairs (no lift in the hotel!) and he carried my suitcase for me as well. The single room (#230) looked O.K. and I accepted it. The bed was of the single size though (and I am used to a twin bed). Ensuite had a shower and everything looked clean. Having checked in I asked if any meals were possible but was told the chef had the day off and the only thing would be a bar meal. So I ordered a meal from the bar. I went for the freshly battered Cod, chips and garden peas (as opposed to the mushy peas that I don't like very much). What was brought up from the kitchen was enough to fill the proverbial hole in one's tooth. The tiniest piece of Cod that I have ever seen, apparently taken from the freezer and fried not long enough to thaw it up and bring it to "cooked" condition. A small portion of chips and what I would describe as a "thimble" of garden peas. For drinks I chose the Fuller's London Pride, the only thing in the bar that came close to my all time favourite "real ale". The bar itself was a work of art from a very modern interior designer. All white, modern lighting, no curtains or anything to muffle the voices and, with a group of French coach tourists inside it sounded like the concourse of Waterloo Station. Which idiot designs a bar that way! The bed was too narrow for my liking and the mattress rather stiff. The room featured the standard television and coffee / tea making facilities. I haven't sampled the restaurant for dinner the other nights. Breakfast on mondaymorning was a buffet and offered everything that comes with a good English breakfast, the "full works". Top breakfast therefor! Full marks here! The hotel is not for disabled as there are only stairs, no lifts. Ample parking space and a quiet setting at the southern edge of town.

    « Perfectly..... adequate »

The hotel is located on the edge of town, and is very pleasant. Room was comfortable if small and quite a hike round a maze of corridors. Price was steep for the offer. Overall was ok - just seemed to lack that something special.

« Tiny room for the price. »

Stayed for one night after doing The Marathon Mighty Hike for Macmillan in June. We were shattered and needed a good rest. My single room was very small although the bathroom was large. Bed was comfy enough but very noisy (it was warm so had the windows open). Breakfast was very good. Bar service very poor, basically there is nobody there and you have to summon somebody. Overall it's way over priced £90 single room for one night. Nice area but wouldn't stay again.

    « Ridiculous bar arrangement »

The staff are very eager to make you happy, and breakfast was pretty good........notwithstanding the plastic "Asda" bread. A nice room in the attic with no noise from outside, but the distance to it is not for the fainthearted. The bar set up is just madness. You have to pick up a phone on the bar and dial Reception for someone to come and serve you. When Reception is busy you just wait and wait and wait. My guess is that some accountant has just taken the opportunity to cut out a head. A great shame.

    « Small Room! »

I want to start this review by saying this is a stunning hotel, well staffed, clean and very comfortable. The architecture is authentic and very interesting. The environment was clean and warm and comfortable. However -I stayed on business - and therefore did not make full use of the hotel facilities - I did not stay for long at the bar, nor use the dining room. I didn't have breakfast, nor did I use the car park. The main point of my stay was to do some work in my room and sleep over to be close to work the next day. So - the room was all that mattered. To that end - it was disappointing. My room was a single - so I did not expect a huge bed - and what I had was 'ok' - yet comfortable. the ensuite was fantastic, spacious and clean - good water pressure. The room however, was tiny! It could have been a converted storage room or the landing half way up the stairs, but whatever it originally was - it did not convert to a satisfactory bedroom. An ironing board was provided on request - but there simply was not enough room to keep it in the room after I has used it. While I would have to rate the hotel as being value for money - as I only used the room, on this occasion I would have to say it was not. Had I have used more of the hotel and only used my room to sleep I may have thought differently.

« Nothing too much for the staff »

Travelling with a companion in a wheelchair can be awkward and tiring, but the staff here were unfailingly helpful, with luggage in particular. Our accessible room on the ground floor was spacious with a large wet room, and the room service excellent. A good full English breakfast followed, and though we had to vacate by 11, we were made more than welcome in the lounge until we left.

« Best in the area »

Nice clean country style hotel. Retro styling downstairs, rooms are clean and comfortable. High speed free internet. Restaurant not quite up to par. Only hotel in the area that accepts American Express.

« Ideal hotel for seeing all Wells has to offer! »

I like the location and historic background of this hotel with its proximity to the Cathedral and other places of interest in the area. Excelent facilities and reatuarant make it a very pleasant place to spen time in that area of Somerset.

« great value and service »

I stayed with my teen daughter here one night. Very quiet despite being near reception, very comfortable beds, neat rooms and clean bathroom. Varied in hotel restaurant with nice selection. We had room service and cod and chips as well as healthy salads, both equally fresh and good size servings. Prompt in bringing us a heater as the heating was already on summer mode but I felt a bit chilly. Nice English breakfast and reasonable buffet selection. Great parking. Good internet connection. We would stay here again!

    « Really nice hotel »

I stayed 3 nights for business. Really nice change from the large hotels I'm used to in London - far more personal and attentive. Nice atmosphere in the lounge and bar and the breakfast were made to order, again far better than the usual buffet many hotels offer. Thoroughly recommend this hotel

    « Clean and comfortable »

For our purposes this was an ideal location for a three-night leisure stay. No real complaints; one problem with a long wait for food to be served in the bistro was well-handled by the staff. The room was clean, comfortable and quiet. Food was adequate. Standard as expected for the price paid.

    « Just above average! »

Let's start outside very well presented building. Good parking and nice appearance. Inside is very nice. reception staff very good. Nice bar area but very small. The rooms are ok. Bit over priced for the accommodation. But overall good. The hotel doesn't have a gym on site but have a membership with a local gym called switch which was very good just remember to take a towel with you. Would go again.

« Tired hotel, small dated room »

I stayed in the hotel in preparation for a business appointment. The hotel is massive but is very tired. In fairness there was some upgrading works taking place so it may improve. However the room I was in wasn't upgraded and looked dated. The room was clean and the shower good. Breakfast was pretty ample, a bit greasy and some of the elements a bit cheap but in all, ok. I paid in excess of £100 for the nights stay which I deam to be too expensive for the accommodation, service and surroundings. On the night I stayed there were roadworks outside on the main road that had a detrimental effect on sleep that night

« Convenient location for local attractions »

Had a short three night stay to visit a few of the local gardens. We received a warm and friendly welcome on arrival, before being directed to our room which was situated on the ground floor in the newer wing. The room itself was clean, comfortable and well appointed, but lacked natural light due to having to keep the blinds semi closed to ensure privacy as the window overlooked a tiny courtyard with the windows of the restaurant a mere ten feet away. The original part of the hotel seemed to have more architectural character than the newer wing, and the modern bar felt uncared for with abandoned empty glasses and crumbs strewn everywhere. We noticed that some of the light coloured seats in the bar area were in need of a good wipe-down as they had drink and food stains on them. Breakfast consisted of the usual ?full-English' with fish alternatives, and very limited cold meats, and on occasions the staff seemed under pressure to keep up with the number of orders.

    « Dissapointing and Dull »

As a single female away for work I found my room to be extremely small and bed a child would fit in, but not an adult. I'm only 5ft 7 but my feet stuck out the end of my bed making this a very unpleasant experience. Dinner was included and even through the restaurant was busy the waiting staff were pleasant, but not very attentive. I ordered a burger and requested salad instead of chips. The homemade burger was very slow at arriving and when it did arrive it came with no extra salad. The burger was a mess, falling apart and overcooked. When I requested the salad a bowl of lettuce arrived with some dressing, not quite what I was expecting. I did eat the burger pieces as I was very hungry, but I did complain the next morning as I felt this was not acceptable. Breakfast was better, but could do with an overhaul as it again took ages to arrive. Staff were nice enough, but would not stay here again as felt the bed and the food not really not acceptable. As I have a best western platinum card no upgrade was offered, but the meal was reimbursed to my company after complaining. Staff need some training and the chef that day should know what a homemade burger should look like, before sending out the so called burger I received.

    « Everything you need! »

Had a great one night's stay - twin room was clean and a good size, nice size beds, bathroom was freshly redecorated with lovely shower and mini toiletries, and a selection of tea and coffee in the room. Room was quite warm but we could open the windows and there was a portable fan in the wardrobe so this wasn't a problem. Ate an evening meal in the bar - good portion sizes and varied menu. Not fine dining but very tasty! Good range of drinks as well. The breakfast was a £9 supplement and offered a nice range of cereal, yoghurt, juice, pastries, toast and the hot buffet which was fantastic! Lovely sausages, thick bacon, good scrambled eggs, hash browns, mushrooms, tomato, beans - the works! Reception staff were very friendly, parking at the hotel was good and there's a garage next door which sells wine and beer as well as all the usual things if you get peckish for snacks! Would definitely stay here again.

    « Recommended »

We only stayed for one night and didn't spend much time in the hotel, so unable to comment on some aspects. The hotel is located in a nice area with plenty of car parking, decent sized double room with TV, large, comfortable bed with complimentary tea/ coffee/ biscuits provided. We did obtain a WIFI connection but found it to be quite weak. Bar stayed open very late which was appreciated! Breakfast was good. Staff professional.

« Visit with friends for a wedding »

Enjoyed the hotel ambiance and friendly staff. Breakfast was very good, we did not eat any other meals there. Bathroom a bit tired looking but very clean. Location fine for our trip and enjoyed walk into town for a look around..

    « Lovely hotel »

Stayed here for the night as I was attending a wedding that was being held here. The wedding room was very tasteful , bright and clean. The food that was served was excellent , credit to the chefs. Waitresses and waiters were amazing and polite. My room was very clean, nice decor, bathroom had a amazing shower. The rubber mat that goes in the bath had seen better days! Didn't use that , was a little grubby. Tea/coffee in room, hairdryer, bonus was the fan that was in wardrobe. Room was extremely hot even though no heating was on. Receptionist said they are unsure why that side of the building gets that hit. To be fair they have over come this issue with the fan on hand in the room.

« Perfectly fine for a business trip »

I stayed at the Birch Hotel for one night as I was in the area for business. I had a double room which was small but fine for one person, the bathroom and shower were great. I had dinner and a couple of drinks in the bar which was perfectly fine, the bar decor did seem a bit modern and out of place with the rest of the hotel but the food and drinks were good. The big problem with the accommodation was that I could hear everything the person in the neighboring room did, the walls must have been paper thin. The was especially evident when they took a shower at 5:30AM and woke me up. Apart from this the hotel is nice in a good location and is good value.

    « Clean and efficient »

Good parking, plus a petrol station very nearby. Staff are efficient (never had to wait more than 5 minutes for an iron to be brought to my room). I do think the hotel is over priced. The location is very handy for the Hospital, so maybe this explains the price.

« Not bad for the price! »

Room a good size, clean and airy. Access not great as no lift. Breakfast was reasonable and location good for Haywards Heath. Free parking a big plus, staff ok but there is just something about the general areas and bar that needs correcting. Not a convivial meeting place, but for a sleeping place it's ok!

    « Revamped rooms »

Stayed over the Easter holidays in the newly decorated comfortable rooms really very nice and a lovely bathroom and modern shower. Breakfast was spot on and the local sausages were the best i tasted in a long time. The Manager on the desk deserves a mention i believe his name is Jo,he is very charming and always helpful with a ready smile. Overall I highly recommend the Birch Hotel .

    « Hayward's Heath »

Very nice stay for a couple of nights. Room comfortable and clean. Breakfast ample. Good service. Close to highways to get into other Sussex places. Could do with an elevator to get up to the rooms, especially with luggage. Bath tub needs a safety rail. Good exercise, though. Nice reception for the birthday party with good food and plenty of it. Great job.

    « Poor service. »

Agreed to meet colleagues at the hotel after work for a drink and a snack before travelling on to an evening meeting. From reception we were directed to the bar at the other end of the hotel. When we got to it there were guests working on their laptops but no sign of staff. After waiting a while I went back up to the main reception & politely asked for bar service. I was informed that someone would be along immediately. 2 members of staff duly arrived, walked through the lounge / bar area without asking if we needed service & then left again, chatting away. Still no one came to serve us. Back to main reception, but there was no one there. After another 15 minutes a guest informed us that you had to ring via switchboard/reception for service. This we did & we finally got attention. But by then we ordered only coffee, as we had run out of time to eat. So they lost our food order. What a shambles.

« Excellent Meal, Nice Atmosphere »

Had lunch with two friends in the Courtyard Restaurant. The staff were charming and helpful, and the meal was excellent. Unusually (for us) we all made the same choice, Roast of the Day (roast lamb) and Salted Caramel Brownie with pistachio ice cream for dessert. The roast lamb was tender and delicious, as were the vegetables, and the portions extremely generous. We were all glad we had decided against a starter as we mightn't have had room for the Brownie, which would have been a tragedy, as this was extremely yummy! I am not vegetarian myself, but there was a vegetarian main course which sounded very tasty. The service was very good with friendly and efficient staff, and the decor of the Courtyard Restaurant is relaxed and attractive. I had never been to The Birch before, and will definitely return.

« Just an overnight stay, but great! »

I had a single room on the ground floor that was extremely comfortable and well appointed. As the purpose of my visit was to spend time with a family member having a special birthday, I didn't have dinner in the hotel but breakfast the next morning was delicious. There was an extremely wide choice of items on the buffet tables, the cooked element was tasty and the staff were attentive to just the right degree.

    « fabulous weekend break »

This is our third stay in as many months. From check in to check out the staff couldn't be more helpful. Its way beyond the 3 star rating. Great value for money, quite traditional, lovely breakfast, nice room Great location. Will return again and again as we have family nearby.

« The staff are incredible »

I have stayed for 2 weeks, the staff are been so thoughtful and welcoming. The rooms are spotless every day and Joe on reception is a wealth of local knowledge. The serving staff can't do enough, Rad, Ty, Amanda and Millie have made this home from home. The food has been excellent and a fair price. This hotel just wants to make customers happy and comfortable. Luckily I'm back here on a few weeks.

« Classic style, comfortable room, efficient staff »

I stayed Sunday night it was very quiet. No one was at reception when I arrived and I had to go to the bar to get someone to check me in. The restaurant is closed on a Sunday eve and with the lights all off, it did make it feel 'half open'. Check-In was efficient, although lacked a welcome or a smile. My room was very traditional, large by todays standards, warm (After I turned the radiators on). The requested iron/ironing board arrived very swiftly and was still outside my room in the morning. Breakfast - greeted in a very polite and professional manner. Food was well presented. The non-boxed cereals could be a better quality. The granola, muesli etc did look a little cheap. There was a good selection of fruit, although almost all of it was out of a tin. Check-out was efficient, with minimum of conversation. I was not even asked if I enjoyed my stay. A good hotel that could be great, with a warmer experience at reception.

    « Comfortable hotel »

Warm, cosy and comfortable. A good hotel for business users. In a good location for the area in which we were working. Restaurant wine menu was on the expensive side and most people seemed to eat outside instead. Although the breakfast was good I would have liked a fresh orange or apple because it is what I normally have with meusli, but the fruit was tinned apart from some sliced melon. However the hotel was very comfortable and we would stay here again if in the area.

« Warm welcome, good food, clean tidy room »

We were here for a nights stay whilst a friend celebrated a birthday up the road. The hotel was comfortable and pleasant to stay at. The team appeared happy, welcoming and keen. Al in all a good stay.

    « Comfortable Stay »

Stayed here as a couple and with some friends after a party, so really just wanted an inexpensive room for the night. The room was smallish and fairly basic, but clean and comfortable. Walls seemed quite thin, as noise did travel, but we slept well, and the bed was comfortable. The hotel is in a period building with some nice features. Access and parking were easy. All staff were polite and friendly, including the night porter, who let us in at 3 am with a smile. Breakfast was a basic buffet in a bright and spacious room. All in all a pleasant stay, at a very reasonable price.

    « great overnight experience »

Chose The Birch Hotel from the internet and it proved to be a great choice with great room, hearty breakfast and good service. Recommended accommodation for anyone visiting the Gatwick or Brighton. The hotel is about 6 miles from the M23.

    « Saturday night revelry »

There is nothing much wrong with the Birch, and the price is not unreasonable provided you get a cut-price internet deal. We stayed there last Saturday night, and found there was a party going on. This led to much noisy goings-on in bedrooms into the early hours, and the walls are not very thick....

    « Very nice stay »

When we arrived we were met by the very friendly and helpful receptionist. We needed a taxi in the evening and it was booked straight away. We were very pleased with our rooms they were very clean and well kept. We had arrived after the lunches were finished but they kindly made us lovely sandwiches. Beds were comfortable and very clean. Only one complaint and that was the room was very hot even though we turned off the radiator and had the windows open all night, but that was just us. Breakfast was very nice and piping hot. There was a good choice in the continental side and we were able to choose what we wanted from the hot food. All round good visit and would use again.

« Good room, horrible food »

Have stayed there for business many times in past. Hotel itself is very nice inside, especially lovely historical part, for me as central European looks like typical British architecture. Nevertheless limited offer of food in restaurant and finally few times got food poison, probably out of bad beer... So cannot recommend, at least try to eliminate to drink beer over there, rooms are fine for 3* place..

This is the second time we have stayed at The Birch, and again it was brilliant. The staff, from arriving to leaving could not be more helpful, all of them. The room was lovely. Free parking. Good old fashioned hospitality at its best. Great value for money, made to feel welcome. We will return again and again as we have family nearby. Nothing was too much trouble.

    « One Night Stay »

Stayed the night while visiting family in the local area. Nice clean room, comfy bed although the pillows were a little on the firm side for my liking. Had a meal in the Bistro as we wanted an informal evening. Great food, good service and very friendly staff, they even made a fuss of our dog (yes dog friendly). All in all a friendly and relaxing stay and we will definitely stay again

    « Next to Godliness »

This is a very clean hotel. We stayed two nights and were very satisfied with it. The first night there was a very loud party but this did not intrude on our room and there had clearly been an effort to make sure the guests were not unduly disturbed. The room was spotless and had everything one might require and everthing worked. The television guide did not correspond with the actual TV channels, but if you enjoy a challenge that was it. The breakfast was very good, the service efficient and polite, and the room itself was very attractive and tastefully decorated for Christmas. Reception was cool and efficient and over all it was a very satisfying stay. The only reason I don't give 5 stars is that it was all just a little impersonal though very efficient. Perhpas on such short acquaintance one shouldn't expect more. We would certainly go again, it served our purpose admirably.

Our daughter and son in law were re locating to this area and we went down from Newcastle upon Tyne to help with their little ones. Due to the removal people arriving late with their furniture we acquired our 2 year old granddaughter overnight at short notice. We had only booked and paid for 2 adults, but despite it being a very busy evening with lots of Christmas parties, nothing was too much trouble. A travel cot was provided with no fuss at all. The whole experience from checking in to leaving was positive. We will make it our base on our regular trips in the future. We really couldn't fault the hotel or staff at all

« Nice Hotel with good food and friendly staff »

Nice hotel with friendly staff and good food! The hotel décor is very nice and food was generally to a good standard. Staff were always very helpful and willing to go that extra mile to make the stay more better. I would recommend this hotel.

    « Weekend Break »

Had a birthday trip to Wakehurst Place NT during the day then ended up at hotel stay over ready for a day out to Brighton ! Lovely staff and the second room was a relatively new & fresh one (initial one was tired looking and not like on website) only minor issue was a wedding reception etc was present & this was not made known to me when I verified my stay prior to visiting.

    « Great rooms »

We were welcomed in very professional manner and given a lovely room 235 and it was comfortable and clean the let down was our anniversary dinner in the courtyard hotel restaurant service was in different the desserts were terrible un cooked crumble made from a packet left all of it and told the female restaurant manager she just shrugged her shoulders, the breakfast of scrambled eggs were in edible again manager again was in different thank goodness for the lovely bedroom

    « Great hotel »

Can't find a fault with this hotel at all really. Very clean and nice comfortable rooms. Nice bathroom and shower. The food was really good and the service excellent. It was in a really handy location for me, I had a 3 min walk to the hospital where I was working! It was very easy to find too. The free wifi was a bit slow and phone signal is bad...but then it seems to be bad everywhere in Haywards Heath. Lots of parking available. The only downside is no lift. To be fair, it does mention that on the website...I just didn't realise that til afterwards! I would certainly stay there again.

« Nothing to complain about at all »

Spotlessly clean, rather dated but charming, good breakfast. The staff were very friendly and professional and accommodating. Wedding was taking place and it didn't impact on me at all. Staircase and stained glass windows delightful reflection of times gone by

    « Mid week lunch »

My friend suggested we have a bite to eat and catch up as convenient for both and she has eaten some vey nice food previously and it's a good price for a mid week lunch. So she's right about price approx £11 for a 2 course lunch. She had whitebait starter which was fine and we both had the daily roast, beef. My friend asked for her beef to be well done,I made no special request. The beef appeared pre sliced and both look exactly the same, very over cooked and pretty tasteless. The potatoes and parsnips were so inform in shape and texture they seemed suspiciously like a certain brand of pre done frozen types.. The veg was nice and fresh and the Yorkshire appeared home made and was tasty. I had a crumble for dessert with custard had a nice flavour but seemed to be fruit base with crumble sprinkled over the top rather than baked together. Coffee and mint was fine and the 2 serving staff, one very young guy and one more mature man were pleasant enough. My friend apologised as she had thought it would be a nice place to take me based on her previous experiences. I won't rush back but you probably have one more time to get it right with her as she's local and put today down to an anomaly.. Don't let it be otherwise!

    « Good Simple Hotel »

I have rated this as 'very good' because it ticked all the key boxes for me - clean, friendly, good value etc. No, it isn't a 5* delux hotel, it's a simple good quality well run hotel on the outskirts of Haywards Heath. As a Best Western gold card holder I was upgraded to a nice large room. Very reasonably priced hotel. Breakfast was very good and served quickly. The hot food was not a buffet, so it looked and tasted a lot fresher.

    « Not what I expected »

Stayed at this Hotel as part of a business trip. Turned out to be a big mistake. Tried to get a drink from the bar and after waiting 10 minutes for someone to turn up left and went to a pub. Later on went to dinner having reserved a table at 19:00. Surprise, no staff on the door or in the restaurant. Again had to wait 5/10 minutes for any staff member to come into the room to offer us any type of service. Finally the rooms. Not enough room to swing a cat in and to top it all TV remote didn't work. Not a Hotel I could in any way recommend.

« Great stay in central Sussex »

Stayed here B & B for two nights. Room was very smallbuthD everything we needed. Very good English breakfast included in the price. Car park is free Twin beds were comfortable but very narrow, not NA width.

    « NO SLEEP!!!!! »

Now I have stayed in this hotel perhaps four times before...... and as it's the only real hotel in Haywards Heath it has become a bit of "needs must". In the past my stays have been ok.... it's nothing special and somewhat over-priced too.... but I checked in as usual.... and all seemed to be ok. The design of the hotel seems to have changed over the years and I'm assuming that the main restaurant / function room was formerly a courtyard that has been roofed over...... and there was to be a 40th birthday party during my stay. I went to my room to find that it was not only on top of part of this space.... but, out of the window and I could actually touch the open roof-lights to the same space..... there was to be no escape from the party!! I made myself scarce until early evening and, to be truthful the party didn't get going til 8pm ish....... and I'm not that much of a moaner so I put up with it. From "She sang Shang A Lang" to "Oops Upside Yer Head" I lived every minute..... but at 10.30 I thought... WOW.... peace. But at 10.45 it started again..... but was over by midnight. Not too bad I thought..... though I do wonder why they insist on putting people NOT associated with an event right over or next to venue... but hey, lets get some sleep. BANG, BANG, BANG..... scream.... expletive..... and more expletives..... Ahhhh, the Saturday night fight on my landing. The sound of splintering wood..... screaming girls... shouting men.... more banging.... ahhhh, a young man now looking for Dan in my room..... if Dan was in my room it could alleviated some of the stress... but alas no... Dan wasn't in my room. So... I got dressed and went to reception.... Victor Meldrew here I come. I began to tell my saga to a staff member who said he could help..... but alas no... the duty manager was called.... I actually asked for the duty manager first but I'll gloss over that administrative error. It seems that a wedding party had returned to the hotel... some were still drinking at the bar..... some were outside.... and of course some were fighting upstairs! It was decided almost straight away that I could have a refund..... which I thank the manager for..... but it did then take over an hour to sort out the situation with attempts to get the people from the room next to me to own up... and pay up! So..... now you'll say my moan is all about guests and not the hotel... maybe. My actual room was very comfortable..... the bed was great..... but on two counts I seemed to have been allocated a room in totally the wrong spot.... and then I was actually in the middle of a series of rooms held for the wedding group.... so that is a fault of whoever did the allocation. So if you do happen to be booked into the hotel.... ask for a room away from the function room..... there are some nice rooms facing the car-park that get less noise! For me.... my work probably won't take me back there.... so the problem won't arise.

    « Short Stay »

This hotel is generally OK for short stay. The room is clean and comfortable. Convenient for stay there only if we drive a car. Breakfast is with very limited choice and have to make additional order for English breakfast. Tried to have lunch at the hotel's restaurant but found to have limited choice of food in the menu.

    « Disappointed »

Read reviews and was wary about staying here. Had an upgraded room which was spacious and clean but a little dated. There was a function on and our meal wasn't good. Starters fine but my partner's steak was cold. They did replace it with an alternative and deducted meal from bill with free drink.Lamb roast wasn't brilliant and not worth the money. Bar staff were lovely and very apologetic. Wouldn't recommend it Ruined the evening thanks a lot!

« Staff Much Younger Than The Decoration »

All the Staff in all departments seemed to be Very Happy. You could tell they were happy in thier work and the Hotel had a very welcoming feel. To give a true Report as I always do,the room I had was (as they say on Trip Advisor) A BIT TIRED maybe by a good few years. But even though the Decoration was POOR the cleaners had done a good job. Thier moto must be MAKE A SILK PURSE OUT OF A PIGS EAR and they Tried Their Hardest.
